:03:00. > :03:06.Until eight's Late Kick Off, races and has been shown the red card,

:03:06. > :03:13.but has it left the pet? He called me names, where does that come

:03:13. > :03:19.from? Behind-the-scenes at Brunton Park with one of football's true

:03:19. > :03:28.characters. These are the people that run the football club.

:03:28. > :03:38.celebrate football's Thomas Ashes. -- top moustaches. Not many goals

:03:38. > :03:38.

:03:38. > :03:44.to show you but plenty to talk about. Micky Gray and his old team-

:03:44. > :03:50.mate Paul Thirlwell. Are you full of pent-up frustration? Your game

:03:50. > :03:59.was called off. It was unfortunate but the manager had us in training

:03:59. > :04:04.so it was not too bad. I thought it would be an opportunity to justify

:04:04. > :04:10.more teasers. It would have been nice but we have Tranmere. You were

:04:10. > :04:16.training on Saturday lunchtime, you were at the Stadium of Light.

:04:16. > :04:20.Around the same time, dramatic events at Old Trafford were

:04:20. > :04:28.ensuring that the subject of racism continues to dominate this football

:04:28. > :04:32.season. John Terry is facing a criminal charge, that is left

:04:32. > :04:37.Chelsea -- that has left England without a captain and without a

:04:37. > :04:42.manager. One of the leading anti- racism groups, Show Racism The Red

:04:42. > :04:52.Card, is based on Tyneside. But the charity faces an uncertain future,

:04:52. > :05:08.

:05:08. > :05:16.just at the time you would have I heard you speak like passionately

:05:16. > :05:24.about the issue of racism in sport and football. Is it a less racist

:05:24. > :05:34.sport now than it was when you came into it? I do not know. It is

:05:34. > :05:35.

:05:35. > :05:45.Racism in football. Research in. The domestic game has been left

:05:45. > :05:48.

:05:48. > :05:53.reeling from a string of race I will be honest, I have felt like

:05:53. > :05:59.I have been fooled a little bed. You look back to the days when John

:05:59. > :06:03.Barnes were playing, the staff they had to deal with. I have always

:06:03. > :06:13.been someone who has championed my country for making great strides,

:06:13. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:19.and we have, but I thought that Europe was gone. -- that era.

:06:19. > :06:25.happening in the north. Trevor Benjamin, a former Leicester City

:06:25. > :06:30.striker, recently witnessed braces and first and while playing for

:06:30. > :06:37.Morpeth Town from an opponent. back into the goalkeeper and he

:06:37. > :06:41.gave me racist abuse. Where does that come from? Angry, upset,

:06:41. > :06:49.wanting to hurt the person that said it. You have to control that

:06:49. > :06:53.and not go that far. It does not solve anything. Trevor's experience

:06:53. > :06:58.has led him to work for Show Racism The Red Card, who used football

:06:58. > :07:04.starts to deliver a strong anti- racist message. The vast majority

:07:04. > :07:08.of our work is done and outside the stadium, in classrooms. We speak to

:07:08. > :07:14.everyone every day and races and is still a huge problem. The racist

:07:14. > :07:24.attitude is still prevalent. This is an has changed quite a lot.

:07:24. > :07:26.

:07:26. > :07:31.Yunnan have Islam a phobia. -- you now have Islamophobia. Today they

:07:31. > :07:35.are working with schoolchildren, spreading the word with players

:07:35. > :07:42.from Newcastle and Sunderland. was the manager of Darlington

:07:42. > :07:46.Football Club, I was stopped at the door. I was told I could not going

:07:46. > :07:53.there because it was only for managers, and I said I was the

:07:53. > :08:03.manager. The shock on that person's face, as though to say you cannot

:08:03. > :08:04.

:08:04. > :08:09.be a manager because you are black. Among the stars, a former Newcastle

:08:09. > :08:13.defender now living in the north- east. It can happen to anybody.

:08:13. > :08:19.Myself, I did not know there are a lot of things regarding race is a

:08:19. > :08:27.mite did not know. As soon as I retired, I have been going round

:08:27. > :08:35.schools, educating young people, it has been great. In his early these

:08:35. > :08:42.at Newcastle, he experienced prejudice in person. There was a

:08:42. > :08:48.policeman behind me, he asked me to get out of the car, he was saying,

:08:48. > :08:54.what are you doing here? He understood my English was not good.

:08:54. > :08:59.Why are you in England? I was petrified. Despite the bad

:08:59. > :09:04.headlines, the group believes races and is not a problem, specifically

:09:04. > :09:10.for football. Society has a much bigger problem than a football.

:09:11. > :09:17.Professional football is a beacon. The role models we have in our

:09:17. > :09:20.campaign, hundreds of current prose, -- current professionals,

:09:20. > :09:29.throughout the world, football is fighting racism in a much stronger

:09:29. > :09:34.wave and society. -- a much stronger way and society. If one of

:09:34. > :09:40.my team-mates was racist, I would say something to them. I would not

:09:40. > :09:48.have it. It is a matter of individuals and the clubs doing a

:09:48. > :09:52.bit more. You need target the players doing it. At the time when

:09:52. > :09:56.football has been engulfed in race is a man controversy, Show Racism

:09:56. > :10:03.The Red Card is in jeopardy after revealing losses of more than

:10:03. > :10:07.90,000 last year. We are funded by a number of organisations like

:10:07. > :10:13.trade unions, and we are seeing budget cuts. Obviously you cannot

:10:13. > :10:19.continue to run a charity with 90,000 losses. There are not many

:10:20. > :10:26.organisations like us. If we were not there, races and would

:10:26. > :10:36.certainly be on the increase. -- race ism. We are doing a job that

:10:36. > :10:39.

:10:39. > :10:49.will lead to be done for many years The site those high-profile

:10:49. > :10:51.

:10:51. > :10:55.national incidence, some players have been abused on social

:10:55. > :11:01.networking site. What is going on with the national game? It has

:11:01. > :11:04.certainly gone too far. I thought it was finished with but we are

:11:04. > :11:08.still seeing him now, and everybody is talking about it. Football

:11:08. > :11:14.should be the winner. I have been in dressing rooms with black

:11:14. > :11:20.players who are really good friends of mine, they are great guys,

:11:20. > :11:26.everybody has to get on together. Can you remember the last time you

:11:26. > :11:30.bore witness to a racist incident in and around football? My own

:11:31. > :11:36.personal experience, I find that quite shocking. I haven't recently

:11:36. > :11:40.seen anything other than what I have seen on the telly. If I am

:11:41. > :11:47.seeing that, I didn't realise it was such a massive problem. It

:11:47. > :11:54.needs to be addressed. The youngsters watching us, they see us

:11:54. > :11:57.first and foremost as role models, and we need to stamp it out. That

:11:57. > :12:02.is what Show Racism The Red Card is all about. This is what I do not

:12:02. > :12:08.get, we all have markers over the years, racist incidents from the

:12:08. > :12:14.time we have been watching football. It was brought home to me when I

:12:14. > :12:19.group of youths, talk about Neanderthal, it was back to the 70s.

:12:19. > :12:29.They were abusing a certain player. The stewards got rid of them. What

:12:29. > :12:30.

:12:30. > :12:38.I do not get, the person at Anfield, at Plymouth, where is this coming

:12:38. > :12:46.from? Many may have been brought up the wrong way. The fans around the

:12:46. > :12:52.player, sorry, at the fans around the fan, they should say to him,

:12:52. > :12:57.keep your mouth down. That is exactly what happened at Anfield,

:12:57. > :13:02.and began a Plymouth has been pulled out. Another thing, the

:13:02. > :13:08.players do their part. We go on the pitch, where the T-shirts, Show

:13:08. > :13:15.Racism The Red Card, that is great. Should we still be doing that?

:13:15. > :13:20.There should be no racism in the game. Football is a great way of

:13:20. > :13:29.showing your reaction. Have players been briefed by anybody, by the

:13:29. > :13:35.club, by the players' association, as to how to deal with this?

:13:35. > :13:43.have a Show Racism The Red Card, and you have your photo with youth

:13:43. > :13:49.teams, directors, and the Show Racism The Red Card people. We have

:13:49. > :13:55.the T-shirts, so you try to get the message across all season through.

:13:55. > :14:00.It is just the same that however many people, a minority are letting

:14:00. > :14:10.people down. Have you thought about what you would do if you heard a

:14:10. > :14:10.

:14:10. > :14:19.racist incident? For one, I do not envisage it happening, but I would

:14:19. > :14:25.discuss it, we have had black players, boat, but we have great

:14:25. > :14:29.black friends. It should not just come from the captain, but a whole

:14:29. > :14:38.squad. You put a stop to it right away. It has no place in any work

:14:38. > :14:47.area. With senior black players coming out and talking about it,

:14:47. > :14:50.now is the time for zero-tolerance and major penalties. We can only

:14:50. > :15:00.scrape the surface. If you would like to join the debate about races

:15:00. > :15:07.

:15:07. > :15:12.and in football, you can find us on Still to come, access all areas.

:15:12. > :15:20.One of the best team youth coaches in the North of England! Two of our

:15:20. > :15:30.games... 1.5 of our games fell victim. Borough fans on the ten-

:15:30. > :15:32.

:15:32. > :15:37.hour round trip to Portman Road. Abandoned after 37 minutes. You got

:15:37. > :15:42.to Milton Keynes and the game was called off. This is tricky to know

:15:42. > :15:52.at what point to pull the plug. We want to get games on but there are

:15:52. > :15:53.

:15:53. > :15:59.all sorts of elements. We turned up at half past one and we were

:15:59. > :16:07.struggling. It was frozen one side and not the other. There was a hint

:16:07. > :16:17.of gamesmanship from Tony Mowbray, extra time in the week, the fans

:16:17. > :16:17.

:16:17. > :16:22.did not look too disheartened about what was going on. Taking advantage

:16:22. > :16:29.of the resources of the other. think they are wanted to see that

:16:29. > :16:33.through. Tony Mowbray might have another side, you must ask him. The

:16:33. > :16:40.Ipswich fans were building because they want to see the game. The

:16:40. > :16:46.Middlesbrough fans were very quiet. Rearranging for Tuesday 27th March.

:16:46. > :16:51.Half price for those that went to the first one, Burrell will make up

:16:52. > :16:57.the difference and free-kick she's as well. Of our clubs, only

:16:57. > :17:07.Hartlepool managed to complete a game. Scouts aplenty looking at the

:17:07. > :17:08.

:17:08. > :17:13.boy wonder. You saw the back of him. We were discussing that.

:17:13. > :17:23.thrashing. He was fantastic on the day, the young lad. A fantastic

:17:23. > :17:26.

:17:27. > :17:30.goal as well. One for the future. So, Carlisle's game at Stevenage,

:17:30. > :17:33.was one of Saturday's many weather victims - And when the news of

:17:33. > :17:35.broke of the postponement, we were actually at Brunton Park with their

:17:35. > :17:38.gaffer, Greg Abbott. Only 11 managers in English football have

:17:39. > :17:48.been in their current job longer than the Carlisle boss. One of the

:17:49. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :18:00.game's real characters. He works hard, he's enthusiastic.

:18:00. > :18:10.He is very driven. He wants to be successful. He loves his job and is

:18:10. > :18:21.

:18:21. > :18:26.Keep going, keep going! Used the I have massive loyalty to this club.

:18:26. > :18:36.I have been well looked after and a fan base is believing in what we're

:18:36. > :18:41.doing. I have been in every situation, good and bad. You can

:18:41. > :18:47.give them encouragement when they're down and it is a decent

:18:47. > :18:54.grounding. Let's take you round the grounds. I am of the People's

:18:54. > :18:59.entertainer. A tour of the clubs. The coach's office. GP may govern.

:19:00. > :19:06.I am not sure what he is doing. Trying to be a coach. It's an easy

:19:06. > :19:10.job. Watching him playing, that's easy enough. He is pretending to be

:19:10. > :19:17.on the phone to someone. That is the physio. The people getting

:19:17. > :19:23.treatment and he is on his phone taking notice. Eric is the heaviest

:19:23. > :19:31.youth team, one of the best youth team coaches. He is hiding from the

:19:31. > :19:37.cameras. Camera-shy. Make sure it is a wider lens, he has put on a

:19:37. > :19:46.bit. He is one of those players who plays behind the front two. They

:19:46. > :19:50.always go missing. A legend in his own lunchtime. Head of the

:19:50. > :19:55.commercial department, she is doodling, pretending to be busy.

:19:55. > :20:00.She loves football, loves football. She is half Man United fan, half

:20:00. > :20:08.Carlisle. I could embarrass this young lady but she might see

:20:08. > :20:15.something back. She is left-handed as you can tell. Busy again. I am

:20:15. > :20:22.working! They are all working. likes to get on his feet and if you

:20:22. > :20:26.are not a football manager, you could do the circuit as a speaker.

:20:26. > :20:31.Somebody said the north-east is geographically isolated, you want

:20:31. > :20:36.to be from Carlisle! He has handled himself well on the big stage when

:20:36. > :20:41.he has had to speak. He's incredibly funny. I think he has

:20:42. > :20:50.done after-dinner speaking and he enjoys it. I will move on for good

:20:50. > :20:55.or bad or worse. I will get sacked or go to a good job.

:20:55. > :20:59.Come on in. Come on in. Com on in and show yourself. These are the

:20:59. > :21:09.people that really run the football clubs. The laundry staff. They are

:21:09. > :21:11.

:21:11. > :21:16.not usually shy on a Monday afternoon. It was very cruel.

:21:16. > :21:23.club has a laundry lady who runs the show. They have gone all shy on

:21:23. > :21:30.me. Absolutely fantastic they are. And Emma as well. She has a high

:21:30. > :21:34.neck jumper on! I enjoy my work and take it seriously. I would love

:21:34. > :21:40.some success as a manager for myself, the players and the club

:21:40. > :21:45.and everybody. I think you get inspired not just players you have

:21:45. > :21:50.played with that place you have played against. Role models and the

:21:50. > :21:54.way people can do it themselves. I had a phone call from Alex Ferguson,

:21:54. > :22:01.huge respect and managers wishing me well and talking about the

:22:01. > :22:06.players. I think that will lie well with me. I do not know Martin

:22:06. > :22:09.O'Neill to talk to at all but I remember watching a game at Aston

:22:09. > :22:16.Villa and the guy from catering asked him what he wanted for his

:22:16. > :22:20.post-match foot in the media room for the Chelsea game. He was

:22:20. > :22:23.absolutely exemplary in his manner and the respect he showed the

:22:24. > :22:30.catering manager and it has please and thank you and so polite. I

:22:30. > :22:34.think a lot of him. He must have done things over the years. This

:22:34. > :22:42.takes me back to the days when I was an apprentice, a proper good

:22:42. > :22:45.apprentice. I used a special mob. These are learning the job. One day

:22:45. > :22:51.they will play in the first team and they will laugh at the young

:22:51. > :22:55.players doing the same thing. We know we haven't got the best squad

:22:55. > :23:01.in the league but I think put them together collectively and everybody

:23:01. > :23:06.puts in an honest shift and an honest shift because they have

:23:06. > :23:10.ability and we can be a match for anybody. When we drop the standards

:23:10. > :23:14.or at that level or work ethic we become an ordinary team and we

:23:14. > :23:24.would be good team and nine times out of 10 we have been. That is

:23:24. > :23:28.where I'm coming from as a manager. Do you think we only have one CD?

:23:29. > :23:37.They made a fortune in royalties tonight. Chris Martin and the rest

:23:37. > :23:43.of them. We saw his genial side, Greg Abbott. He has a tough side to.

:23:43. > :23:48.I have been at a training site when he has lost it. Definitely. He does

:23:48. > :23:53.have a serious side and jovial side. We know about it when the serious

:23:53. > :23:58.side comes out. He is a modern-day manager. He puts his arm around the

:23:58. > :24:03.lads and knows when to be firm and when to get behind you. And give

:24:03. > :24:08.you a rallying call. It seems to be working. Is that the key thing you

:24:08. > :24:11.want from a manager, the right people skills, clearly he is a

:24:11. > :24:17.manager after three and a bit years with an imprint across the clubs.

:24:17. > :24:22.He knows how to deal with people. Is that the essential ingredient?

:24:22. > :24:27.Yes and he knows the players he is bringing, their characters and he

:24:27. > :24:32.has insight in terms of the background into players. We do not

:24:32. > :24:37.have a wealth of funds to keep buying players. He has got it right

:24:37. > :24:42.at the minute. You spoke of Martin O'Neill and this is what he has

:24:42. > :24:47.carried out at the Stadium of Light. He has the same players and has got

:24:47. > :24:51.them going because he knows how to deal with people. He has

:24:51. > :24:56.inspiration and wants to be like Martin O'Neill, he is doing great.

:24:56. > :25:01.I spoke to Paul about him before. He is a man manager. He goes in the

:25:01. > :25:05.dressing room, puts an arm around the player. It means a lot. I have

:25:05. > :25:11.had managers in the past two do not say a word to you and on Saturday

:25:11. > :25:16.it's the first time this BT. It's not nice. Players like to be loved.

:25:16. > :25:24.And Paul is one of them. He is the captain as well and maybe he does

:25:24. > :25:28.that as well. What he's doing is terrific. I will not asked you to

:25:28. > :25:32.name names on the managers. You were at the Stadium of Light, a

:25:32. > :25:38.coming down to earth for Sunderland? They are not yet ready

:25:38. > :25:42.to compete at the top end of the Premier League? Since Martin Scott

:25:42. > :25:47.came through the door, we lost against Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal.

:25:47. > :25:51.Performance why is it was the worst since he has taken over. Also the

:25:51. > :26:00.first half, the first half they did well and got themselves in front

:26:00. > :26:07.but the writing was on the wall for Terry Henry. You have to give

:26:07. > :26:11.Martin O'Neill credit. He is doing a terrific job. Credit to

:26:11. > :26:17.Sunderland fans for the elation they gave to Thierry Henry. In the

:26:17. > :26:20.news this week, The world's first Moustache Film Festival has been

:26:20. > :26:23.announced. That's right, the Stache Film Fest, will be a celebration of

:26:23. > :26:26.movies with moustaches and furry- faced film makers. Well, it got us

:26:26. > :26:36.thinking about some top taches, that have graced our football

:26:36. > :26:45.

:26:45. > :26:49.pitches over the years. Here are As a Marjah, he has been a suave

:26:49. > :26:56.son of South Shields, exam Allardyce was the once famous for

:26:56. > :27:06.face furniture. Phil used November as a excuse to tickle his top lip.

:27:06. > :27:11.

:27:11. > :27:16.It was nothing to do with fashion. Six years at a Middlesbrough

:27:16. > :27:26.between -- Graeme Souness soup strainer was as legendary as his

:27:26. > :27:39.

:27:39. > :27:49.hard man image. It was a popular This is something to behold. His

:27:49. > :27:51.

:27:51. > :27:54.goalscoring prowess meant fans wanted to be like a cheeky Scouser.

:27:54. > :28:03.He is unknown horse Whisperer but it's unsubstantiated a couple of

:28:04. > :28:11.mules live in his lip rock. He had spells at Newcastle and he formed

:28:11. > :28:21.one of the hairiest midfields along Souness. Terry Mac is higher up the

:28:21. > :28:29.

:28:29. > :28:36.Calm down! Calm down! It's only a cup of tea. It's a cup of tea we're

:28:36. > :28:46.talking about! You don't know nothing!

:28:46. > :28:50.

:28:50. > :28:59.At this awards do it looks like someone suggested to the tool to

:28:59. > :29:06.take the job on. It tops the charts due to volume and Jean genius. --

:29:06. > :29:10.ginger. A treat for you because I am not
