:00:25. > :00:29.And tonight, we hear about Senegal and St James's Park. We hear from

:00:29. > :00:34.the man who is on the verge of winning promotion for Darlington

:00:34. > :00:38.and we are in the company of one of our most celebrated photographers.

:00:38. > :00:41.Evening all. Yes, the man behind the celebrated Homes of Football

:00:42. > :00:51.exhibition at the National Football Museum, Stuart Roy Clarke, is with

:00:52. > :00:51.

:00:52. > :00:55.us and so too, former Boro and England defender Danny Mills.

:00:55. > :01:00.Just in time to give us your thoughts on the extraordinary

:01:00. > :01:05.events at the Stadium of Light. The last three weeks have been

:01:05. > :01:12.incredible. We all knew that when Paolo Di Canio came in there will

:01:12. > :01:16.be some reaction - good or bad. For some fans it has been fantastic and

:01:16. > :01:23.the Derby game, and I think you have to wait to see whether that

:01:23. > :01:27.will make a real difference, form goes out the window in a

:01:27. > :01:37.Newcastle/Sunderland derby. They have their win and it looks like

:01:37. > :01:38.

:01:38. > :01:44.they will be safe. The theatre is spectacular. He has earned himself

:01:44. > :01:48.eight Total mandate across the club and he can do no wrong. Everybody

:01:48. > :01:57.is suddenly... From all the political gerrymandering, everybody

:01:57. > :02:03.is... You get a honeymoon period, don't you? He has got them say. A

:02:03. > :02:07.bit like a firefighter coming in. I think we have to wait till next

:02:07. > :02:13.season to see how the players react long-term to what he has done and

:02:13. > :02:19.he has already upset a few. Great this season, but there is a long

:02:19. > :02:27.time to go yet. Football needs characters. He is an absolute dream,

:02:27. > :02:33.isn't he? But you couldn't get much more animated than Martin O'Neill

:02:33. > :02:38.in his early years. Actually you can, Paolo Di Canio. For a

:02:38. > :02:43.photographer, you need characters on the pitch but I need them off

:02:43. > :02:48.the pitch as well in the crowd. If the game is boring, I can seek out

:02:48. > :02:55.all sorts of interesting people. Danny can't wander off a pitch but

:02:55. > :02:57.I can. There will never be a born in a moment when Paolo De Canio is

:02:57. > :03:00.around. Newcastle United striker Papiss

:03:00. > :03:04.Demba Cisse cares a lot for his home country, Senegal. And, in

:03:04. > :03:14.particular, the city where he was born, Sedhiou. He told Andy May

:03:14. > :03:34.

:03:34. > :03:40.about his charity work there and He has become one of Newcastle's

:03:40. > :03:46.most popular players. He is making more of an impact in his home

:03:46. > :03:54.country though, helping to save lives through his own foundations.

:03:55. > :04:04.Senegal is my country and my city is, at Sedhiou. It is a small city.

:04:05. > :04:13.

:04:13. > :04:20.The people do not have money and a Your aim is to buy an ambulance

:04:20. > :04:26.because your first job was as a driver, wasn't it? Yes, to drive

:04:26. > :04:32.for an ambulance was my first job. I think I'd by an ambulance for my

:04:32. > :04:42.city, it is important for me. Before I see people dive. How old

:04:42. > :04:52.were you? 15. That c UN, isn't it? Yes, that's why I stopped going to

:04:52. > :05:02.school. After I tried this job. After I had money, I gave it to my

:05:02. > :05:05.

:05:05. > :05:11.What sort of unaffected that have on you, seeing people die it and

:05:11. > :05:21.sit at such a young age? He it was very difficult for me. I and the UN

:05:21. > :05:28.at that time. Did you ever cry? the first time I cried. In this job,

:05:28. > :05:36.you become strong. It is my city, my city, my brother, my sister, my

:05:36. > :05:46.friend, my family. It is normal I give an ambulance for the city. It

:05:46. > :05:48.

:05:48. > :05:57.is normal for me. Sometimes, the people look at me... But the star.

:05:57. > :06:05.But me, I say I am not a star, I am just a normal player. The man who

:06:05. > :06:11.plays the football. I like the people and the people like me. And,

:06:11. > :06:21.yeah... What does it mean to wear the number nine shirt for Newcastle

:06:21. > :06:28.United? The number nine is a big number. It is the number before for

:06:28. > :06:37.Alan Shearer. It is a big number. I tried to give the best for the

:06:37. > :06:43.number. Sometimes it is difficult but all the time, I tried. What do

:06:43. > :06:51.you in jury in Newcastle? I enjoy the people. The people from New

:06:51. > :07:00.park - might Newcastle are a nice people. I'd enjoy this city. I say,

:07:00. > :07:05.if I'd tried good my job, I enjoy the city. When you score, we see

:07:05. > :07:10.this beaming, infectious smile. What does it mean to you when you

:07:10. > :07:18.put the ball in the back of the net for Newcastle? For me, it is the

:07:18. > :07:24.best in the world to score a goal. If I score I go crazy. I like to

:07:24. > :07:32.score a goal, it is my job. We saw it against Fulham. You liked that,

:07:32. > :07:40.didn't you? Yes, I thought, I'll go and see the fans. It gave three

:07:40. > :07:46.points for the team. I say, I think the game is finished. If I go and

:07:46. > :07:56.see the fans I will take a yellow card but it is OK, it is OK. That

:07:56. > :08:00.

:08:00. > :08:04.is why I say, if I scored a goal I He comes across as a thoroughly

:08:04. > :08:12.nice fellow and he feels a huge sense of responsibility to where he

:08:12. > :08:16.comes from. Great dignity. I was in West Africa covering football and

:08:17. > :08:20.every day from my hotel I could see this game going on with a brilliant

:08:21. > :08:27.player and he turned out to be the garden of the hotel. I said to the

:08:27. > :08:34.manager, can I take him to one of the Premier League teams and

:08:34. > :08:39.introduce him and he said, be my guest. This was next door to

:08:39. > :08:43.Senegal. Similar background to Susie Gill then I had to leave and

:08:43. > :08:49.on the way to the airport a military coup happened. The hotel

:08:49. > :08:54.got closed and he lost his job and I never find out what became of him.

:08:54. > :09:00.It is one less player making it to France and the stepping stone. It

:09:00. > :09:06.is a great story. The point is, such are the margins and there is a

:09:06. > :09:10.lot of football talent out there. There is a responsibility to a

:09:10. > :09:17.nation like Africa and the figurehead status that somebody

:09:17. > :09:23.like Cisse will play over there. There is an aspirational values.

:09:24. > :09:28.Mali, I never saw so many football games going on. People were so

:09:28. > :09:33.knowledgeable about, mostly the premier league, but all sorts of

:09:33. > :09:38.things. That is their passport out of a country that they love and

:09:38. > :09:43.they want to pay back in some way if they get the chance. He kept his

:09:43. > :09:50.goals going. I suppose he has his freedom and paying -- playing out

:09:50. > :09:55.of position. He is making a contribution? I think there was a

:09:55. > :09:59.conflict before as to who was the number one. He seems a lovely guy

:09:59. > :10:03.but all centre-forwards love the limelight and they want to be the

:10:03. > :10:09.number one with their first name on the team-sheet. He has proved that

:10:09. > :10:13.now and he has done well. He has settled incredibly quickly. After

:10:13. > :10:17.the honeymoon period, it takes a while to get used to their

:10:17. > :10:23.surroundings and speaking a different language. It is not easy.

:10:23. > :10:28.He has got over that and hopefully, next season he will really kick on.

:10:28. > :10:31.He has hit the ground running. So, Stuart has spent the last 25

:10:31. > :10:34.years photographing football in his own unique way. If you do not

:10:35. > :10:44.recognise his face, you may well recognise his work. Here's a brief

:10:45. > :10:58.

:10:58. > :11:03.insight into how he goes about his The early years were like anything

:11:03. > :11:09.formative, a bit like the first case of a teenage romance or

:11:09. > :11:17.something. I went into it with eyes wide. I could almost have done the

:11:17. > :11:27.Homes of Football bend. Not just Victorian arenas and iconic names

:11:27. > :12:02.

:12:02. > :12:07.but to show how it was going to I very often arrive at a ridiculous

:12:07. > :12:13.hour. For a 3 o'clock kick-off, I might arrive at 9 o'clock. I want

:12:13. > :12:19.to be the first person there and see everyone arrive and be the last

:12:19. > :12:25.person to see them go. I likely to be my event as well as an event in

:12:25. > :12:29.his own way. Sometimes I like to pick out people. Sometimes I get to

:12:29. > :12:34.look at the dressing room and that is interesting. I would be trying

:12:34. > :12:44.to build up a complete picture of that particular home of football

:12:44. > :13:11.

:13:11. > :13:17.He he mentioned first cases and it has got me wondering... -- kisses.

:13:17. > :13:22.You are always on the lookout for the unusual, I guess. Your work

:13:22. > :13:31.reeks of character. Back to the action and when penalties are being

:13:31. > :13:38.taken, people can't understand. The man City Stars confuse me because

:13:38. > :13:44.they have all turned around. That is a fantastic image. That sort of

:13:44. > :13:50.behaviour in the crowds is amazing. We will take a look at one or two

:13:50. > :13:57.of your keynote moments. He is there a danger that it is much

:13:57. > :14:01.harder now for you to capture in the modern era the kind of

:14:02. > :14:11.quirkiness of the character as football grounds have got sanitised.

:14:12. > :14:17.

:14:17. > :14:23.Perhaps you might see that some of the salt of the game that people

:14:23. > :14:33.sentimental poor. But some of the modern grounds need to be full.

:14:33. > :14:36.they have the character, say, of Emerson Park? I guess you would

:14:36. > :14:44.fixate on if they go with the cigarette in hand, at the urinals

:14:44. > :14:51.at the back of the ground, all the things we cannot do? Yes, they were

:14:51. > :14:57.built in stages, lots of them, and now there are 20 or 30 grounds that

:14:57. > :15:07.are completely broke new. But I still find the charm. I love this

:15:07. > :15:09.

:15:09. > :15:12.one. How long did you have to wait to get that shot? About 20 minutes.

:15:12. > :15:18.I noticed the dog very early. He watched more intent be banned

:15:18. > :15:26.anyone. He went up behind the goal for the second half. He had to pay

:15:26. > :15:33.two quid! I can sometimes spend an hour focused on one person waiting

:15:33. > :15:40.for that moment. The Carlisle bomb was in the last second of the match.

:15:40. > :15:48.If you are a Carlisle fan, do not leave before the end. On this one,

:15:48. > :15:56.the sheer intensity and look on the faces. Beautiful picture. Even

:15:56. > :16:06.though you do so it yourself! Do football people appreciate the

:16:06. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:12.wider context -- wider context of the game? So on time she do,

:16:12. > :16:17.sometimes you do not. Once the game kicks off, you are so intent on

:16:17. > :16:21.what you're doing. But once you are away from football, you see people

:16:21. > :16:28.in the street, of course you understand it. All sat on the bench,

:16:28. > :16:33.you can see the passion that people have. When you are in the game it

:16:33. > :16:38.is great difficult because you are so focused on what you are doing.

:16:38. > :16:45.Often some of the best moments are the benches, and watching the

:16:45. > :16:48.managers. As we approach the end of the season, how did our teams in

:16:48. > :16:58.the Football League third this weekend? Pretty much business as

:16:58. > :17:01.

:17:01. > :17:11.Forest gave Middlesbrough a morale boost ahead of the visit to the

:17:11. > :17:17.Reebok Stadium. The early momentum was with Bolton. The Boro

:17:17. > :17:24.goalkeeper was soon called into action again. Bolton remained a

:17:24. > :17:34.Fred Coe Ford after the break but had a big slice of luck with the

:17:34. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:45.opener from Chris Eagles. -- eight threatening force. Kieron Dyer got

:17:45. > :17:51.his second goal in eight Boro shirt. Marvin Sordell finished from the

:17:51. > :17:56.spot. Things were going from bad to worse for Boro. This time there was

:17:56. > :18:05.no doubting the Guild of Jonathan Woodgate as he held back Marvin

:18:06. > :18:09.Sordell, leaving his side to finish the game with 10 men. Carlisle

:18:09. > :18:14.arrived in Bournemouth unbeaten in their last six but their opponents

:18:14. > :18:23.from the brink of promotion and determined to end the day on a high.

:18:23. > :18:28.The Cherries took the lead when Steve Cook's header went in. But

:18:28. > :18:34.before the break, Carlisle nearly pulled one back but were denied by

:18:34. > :18:41.the woodwork. In the second half, Lee Miller drew them level in

:18:41. > :18:46.spectacular style. But parity were short-lived. Six minutes later,

:18:46. > :18:49.Harry Arter restored the lead for Bournemouth. Carlisle were

:18:49. > :18:56.spectators as Bournemouth clawed their promotion party and Brett

:18:56. > :19:04.Pitman fired home to secure and eight successive win for the

:19:04. > :19:13.Cherries. Hartlepool had already slipped through the League One

:19:13. > :19:19.trapdoor before the visit of Brentford. The Pools keeper looked

:19:19. > :19:25.to be in for a busy afternoon. But Hartlepool but undeterred and took

:19:25. > :19:32.a deserved lead after 25 minutes. Luke James had time to pick his

:19:32. > :19:38.spot. John Hughes has predicted a massive future in the game for the

:19:38. > :19:43.teenage striker. Hartlepool have won only five times at Victoria

:19:43. > :19:50.Park this campaign and the three points slipped away here. They

:19:50. > :20:00.could not clear their lines and Marcello Trotta was allowed to turn

:20:00. > :20:02.

:20:02. > :20:06.and fire home. York Kate and sells a lifeline in

:20:07. > :20:16.their bid to avoid dropping out of the Football League. -- gave

:20:16. > :20:23.themselves. They took just 55 seconds to find a breakthrough.

:20:23. > :20:31.Southend recovered well. Ryan Leonard equalised. But York were

:20:31. > :20:37.not to be denied for long and were back in front before the break. The

:20:37. > :20:44.ball eventually fell for Matty Blair to score his seventh goal of

:20:44. > :20:49.the season. The win means that York are now two points above the drop

:20:49. > :20:59.zone with their final game to come against Dagenham and Redbridge.

:20:59. > :21:08.Gateshead secured their status with 82-0 win. Berwick Rangers won

:21:08. > :21:16.Commiserations to Hartlepool on the relegation. But at least the fate

:21:16. > :21:22.of York is in their own hands. Mathematically it goes all the way

:21:22. > :21:27.up to 18th. I do not think Torquay and Plymouth are going to be in it.

:21:27. > :21:30.A point for York will be enough. But a waiter Dagenham and

:21:30. > :21:39.Redbridge? I think they have to go with the attitude that they want to

:21:39. > :21:49.win the game. After a torrid few years, Darlington 1883 have enjoyed

:21:49. > :22:00.

:22:00. > :22:05.every birth in the Northern League. Liquidation, relegation four times

:22:05. > :22:10.over, and their players. It looked as though things could not get much

:22:10. > :22:15.bleaker at Darlington last summer. They needed a saviour and it came

:22:15. > :22:19.either shape of one of their former players, Martin Gray. He has done a

:22:19. > :22:28.brilliant job. He has galvanised the fans and brought in some really

:22:28. > :22:35.good players for this level. When you think at the start of the

:22:35. > :22:41.season he did not have 11 players. To be top of the table now, and

:22:41. > :22:46.hopefully winning the league, it is tremendous. The chairman gave me

:22:46. > :22:49.some money and a piece of paper and had to build our team. You knew was

:22:49. > :22:55.could be tough to attract better players but as the season has gone

:22:55. > :23:00.on, we have chopped and changed, and the club has been fantastic in

:23:00. > :23:04.giving me finances when it has been very difficult. What we started

:23:04. > :23:10.with an where we are today, we have probably made nine changes since

:23:10. > :23:16.August. Darlington were a football and the clock for 88 years, and

:23:16. > :23:23.that has brought a certain pressure to their quest to win the Northern

:23:23. > :23:29.League this season. So far, a colossal 116 points happy one.

:23:29. > :23:32.players have played with that pressure from day one. Two-person

:23:32. > :23:41.people turn up and they expect us to win and score goals, and

:23:41. > :23:51.everybody wants to be due -- 2000 people. They have handled the

:23:51. > :24:02.

:24:02. > :24:06.The players are used to playing at this level. It is different for me

:24:06. > :24:12.and the coaching staff, we have been fortunate to play at the

:24:12. > :24:17.highest level. But the players unused the level, you used to the

:24:17. > :24:24.facilities, keys to the surfaces. We try to make his as professional

:24:24. > :24:28.as possible. We try and do things as we should do as the Football

:24:28. > :24:33.League club. A return to the Football League is at a target for

:24:33. > :24:38.the future, as well be having a Crown to call their own. But

:24:38. > :24:44.Heritage Park, which they share with Bishop Auckland, has been

:24:44. > :24:50.something of a fortress for them, with 19 wins. It is a great ground,

:24:50. > :24:57.but we are about local football. We need at ground very similar to this.

:24:57. > :25:04.There would be ideal for us, for the next few seasons at least.

:25:04. > :25:08.seven games in hand, Spennymoor can still mathematically catch

:25:08. > :25:16.Darlington, but they look favourites to win the Northern

:25:16. > :25:21.League this season, and they would live up to the eight tour of

:25:21. > :25:26.football. Do long journey back has begun. The team spirit here is the

:25:26. > :25:32.best I have come across. I have been in the game 25 years and had

:25:32. > :25:38.fantastic team mates and tracing -- changing rooms. But they are very

:25:38. > :25:42.proud to put the shirt, and that is what I expect. When people come and

:25:42. > :25:48.talk to me, it is not about money, and want them to play for

:25:48. > :25:53.Pollington. We know we have four or five levels decline back to the

:25:53. > :25:57.Football League Conference. To do it every year will be a massive ask.

:25:57. > :26:07.But as long as we get a great support and we continue improving,

:26:07. > :26:10.

:26:10. > :26:16.I'm sure we can get somewhere near that in the next few years.

:26:16. > :26:26.As and when Darlington do finally seal their promotion, they will

:26:26. > :26:27.

:26:27. > :26:33.face Scarborough Athletic, another club from our region. Spennymoor

:26:33. > :26:41.could still catch them. If they win all their games in hand. Probably

:26:41. > :26:47.unlikely. The Northern League is the second oldest leak in the world.

:26:47. > :26:52.It is only just a little bit younger than the Football League.

:26:52. > :27:01.I'm really looking forward to doing the Northern League for a good part

:27:01. > :27:06.of the next year. Players rushing from their daytime jobs, thinking I

:27:06. > :27:13.am captain of the site, and it kicks off in half an hour. It is

:27:13. > :27:18.fascinating. Real football, Danny. I have seen it. At Harrogate Town

:27:18. > :27:23.the other week, they are doing a fantastic job. Team sheets go at

:27:24. > :27:28.the last minute and sometimes names have to be crossed off. And it is

:27:28. > :27:34.good that I can put these pictures in the national football museum

:27:34. > :27:36.alongside some of these big names. That is what the 100 it to the

:27:36. > :27:43.anniversary of the Football Association should be all about.

:27:43. > :27:49.You have to hand it to Darlington, all that professionalism. They

:27:49. > :27:54.bring a certain standard. And the fans have been brilliant. I thought

:27:54. > :28:01.they would struggle. Darlington fans have often told me that the

:28:02. > :28:08.club would collapse. They average about 2000 fans in the league. For

:28:08. > :28:14.the standard they of playing it is phenomenal. It has been a rebirth.

:28:14. > :28:19.Completely. And that core of loyal fans have stayed. They stuck with

:28:19. > :28:26.it. This is the first season of promotion, it is a long way back,
