:00:18. > :00:23.On tonight's Late Kick Off, we look back on Sunderland's bittersweet day
:00:24. > :00:26.at Wembley. Dennis Tueart, an FA Cup winner with
:00:27. > :00:30.Sunderland and a League Cup winner with Manchester City, and G`ry
:00:31. > :00:33.Bennett, a League Cup and F@ Cup runner`up with the Black Cats, are
:00:34. > :00:37.here to reflect on what's ndxt for Gus Poyet's team.
:00:38. > :00:38.And we discuss the implicathons of Alan Pardew's headline making
:00:39. > :00:49.actions. Welcome along to a new serids of
:00:50. > :00:54.Late Kick Off. I am Steve Bower and I will be here with you every Monday
:00:55. > :00:58.night from now until early Lay. A warm welcome to Dennis and Gary And
:00:59. > :01:02.also to Daily Mirror football journalist Simon Bird. Therd is
:01:03. > :01:09.quite a lot for us to discuss tonight. You can get in touch via
:01:10. > :01:13.Twitter using the hashtag LKONEC. But only one place to start tonight.
:01:14. > :01:19.Sunderland dared to dream and, for 55 minutes, it looked as though it
:01:20. > :01:24.might all come true. You were here in 1973? '73, yeah.
:01:25. > :01:29.Tell us about that day? What do you remember? Absolutely fabulots. Came
:01:30. > :01:34.down on the train. Back samd day. Brilliant. This will be my fifth
:01:35. > :01:40.one. Never seen them win yet. But hopefully, this time. I've barely
:01:41. > :01:41.seen a Man City fan. I don't think they know the game's today, to be
:01:42. > :01:57.honest. CHEERING.
:01:58. > :02:02.This is it. The first big fhnals day of the season. Sunderland enjoying
:02:03. > :02:08.their first trip to Wembley for 16 years. Their first cup final for 22.
:02:09. > :02:18.The 54th League Cup Final is underway at Wembley Stadium. Borini
:02:19. > :02:24.is on the run. He stayed in front of Vincent Kompany here. And hd's in on
:02:25. > :02:37.goal! Borini! Fabio Borini gives Sunderland the Wembley lead Look at
:02:38. > :02:44.Gus Poyet! Listen to the nohse! It is Manchester City nil, Sunderland
:02:45. > :02:53.one. And Sunderland having soaked up some early pressure. Not only well
:02:54. > :02:57.and truly in this cup tie. Just at the moment they are in comm`nd of
:02:58. > :03:03.this cup final. There goes Borini again. Borini is running aw`y from
:03:04. > :03:12.Kompany! Great tackle that. What a tackle! Midway through the 2014
:03:13. > :03:14.League Cup Final. Fabio Borhni's goal has us all set for an tpset
:03:15. > :03:23.right now. Toure! That is unstoppable!
:03:24. > :03:45.Absolutely unstoppable! Kolarov. Dzeko wants it. Dodsn't
:03:46. > :03:55.come to him! Does come, thotgh, to Samir Nasri! CHEERING. City two
:03:56. > :04:05.Sunderland one. Knocked down towards Steven
:04:06. > :04:11.Fletcher. Couldn't get it under control. And the chance to find a
:04:12. > :04:15.team`mate in the middle, and maybe rescue the cup idle, has gone. ``
:04:16. > :04:20.cup final. Sunderland are going to fight to the last. They're going to
:04:21. > :04:24.drag every last ounce of effort out of themselves. Demichelis h`s got
:04:25. > :04:30.the ball away, though, and look at this! Manchester City are swarming
:04:31. > :04:50.forward. It's Toure. It's hhs! It's Navas! It's all over.
:04:51. > :04:57.It's a horrible walk that one. Going up the stairs to get the losers
:04:58. > :05:02.medal. And the fans, they m`de us feel proud. I am very proud of the
:05:03. > :05:07.team. That was the main thing today. Because we knew who was in front of
:05:08. > :05:11.us. We knew the quality thex had. And everything needed to work
:05:12. > :05:16.perfectly for us. You know, it needed to be against the most
:05:17. > :05:21.special player from Manchester City. And we put it in an average, normal
:05:22. > :05:25.way for about 55 minutes or so. But then, a wonder goal from a strong
:05:26. > :05:29.player, one of the best in the world probably today, changed the game.
:05:30. > :05:32.And in two minutes, they were coming and difficult to hold. But we
:05:33. > :05:36.reorganised and we have another goal and a few approaches. And another
:05:37. > :05:40.day, you take better chances and better touches in the last third and
:05:41. > :05:45.you come back in the game. But proud of the way that we play the game.
:05:46. > :05:49.And I am proud of the fans, because they supported us all the w`y until
:05:50. > :05:54.today. I know, for me, it is a great feeling. It is probably the double
:05:55. > :05:58.or triple the times I felt. And it's a great feeling, emotions,
:05:59. > :06:02.especially against a big te`m. And when nobody expected us to be in
:06:03. > :06:06.front against Man City here at Wembley. You keep doing it hn these
:06:07. > :06:12.big games. Newcastle, cup thes, cup final now. You've got a lot of big
:06:13. > :06:17.league games to go. Are you going to keep on doing it? That means I am
:06:18. > :06:21.made for a big team. So we will see what happens until the end of the
:06:22. > :06:26.season. Play for Sunderland. Try to be not only the big teams, but also
:06:27. > :06:31.the small ones. And we will see in the summer. We knew it was going to
:06:32. > :06:35.be tough. We had to play 100% today to get anything out of the game In
:06:36. > :06:39.that sort of sense, the lads can keep their heads up high. Btt I ve
:06:40. > :06:43.always said, when you get to this stage, it's about winning. So we are
:06:44. > :06:45.very disappointed. I'm proud of the team and team`mates and man`ging
:06:46. > :06:48.staff and coaching staff. A tremendous effort getting to the
:06:49. > :06:53.final of this competition. Just disappointing to lose. And hf I m
:06:54. > :06:56.honest, we lost to two wonddr goals there. Sometimes, you have to hold
:06:57. > :07:01.your hands up. But it's difficult to do that at the minute. I sax this
:07:02. > :07:06.from day one. My job was to stay in the Premier League. Because it was
:07:07. > :07:10.nearly an impossible job. Wd were right down at the bottom and too far
:07:11. > :07:16.from the rest. Somehow, slowly, we started doing special things. Given
:07:17. > :07:20.the chance to play here. I hope this gives us that extra experience to be
:07:21. > :07:24.go and be good in the leagud. Make sure we stay in the Premier League.
:07:25. > :07:31.So, the fifth successive defeat at Wembley for Sunderland. But who
:07:32. > :07:35.knows? They could be back there even this season. All three of these
:07:36. > :07:41.gentlemen were at Wembley ydsterday. Dennis, Gus Poyet spoke abott spirit
:07:42. > :07:44.and pride. Can they use that as a springboard to try and survhve in
:07:45. > :07:48.the Premier League? He is going to have to get them up again. He got
:07:49. > :07:51.them up mentally and physic`lly Great attitude. He pulled ott one
:07:52. > :07:55.little stroke, which no one was expecting. He played Borini front on
:07:56. > :07:59.his own. Everyone was perhaps expecting Altidore, but maybe even
:08:00. > :08:03.Fletcher if he was fit. And he played Borini. It surprised me,
:08:04. > :08:07.because I thought it would hold the ball up there. But he was going for
:08:08. > :08:10.Borini's pace. And on the d`y, that is what got the first goal. He
:08:11. > :08:13.really moved Demichelis and Kompany around at the back. They weren't
:08:14. > :08:17.comfortable as they have bedn. I have seen them many times this
:08:18. > :08:21.season. That period, that first`half, he really put them under
:08:22. > :08:25.pressure. There was no easy sitting on the ball at the back. It worked
:08:26. > :08:29.well. For 55 minutes, it was terrific. Gary, in 1985, yot lost
:08:30. > :08:32.the League Cup final and yotr team were relegated. What lessons can
:08:33. > :08:38.they take? How do they avoid this scenario? I think, if you go back to
:08:39. > :08:42.1985, one thing that we did lose, especially after the final, was team
:08:43. > :08:45.spirit. I think, if you look at those players, they have a good team
:08:46. > :08:48.spirit. A good manager who understands the game. And
:08:49. > :08:51.tactically, he is not afraid to make changes, as we have seen yesterday,
:08:52. > :08:55.playing Borini upfront. He played Colback on the left. And ag`in, what
:08:56. > :09:00.he has got is competition for places. Simon, you have seen plenty
:09:01. > :09:03.of Gus Poyet's press conferdnces. And since he was appointed, you saw
:09:04. > :09:07.them yesterday at Wembley. What did you make of his demeanour at the
:09:08. > :09:10.end? One of the endearing things about Poyet is he shows his
:09:11. > :09:13.emotions. You could hear in his voice he was a little bit upset
:09:14. > :09:15.Quite disappointed. He knew those chances don't come around vdry often
:09:16. > :09:53.That is the manager's challdnge to win a cup.
:09:54. > :09:57.That is the manager's challdnge Especially losing that, everyone was
:09:58. > :10:01.expecting us to get a drubbhng, but I think if you speak to the
:10:02. > :10:05.supporters, yesterday, coming away from the game, OK we have lost, but
:10:06. > :10:11.I have come away with a smile op my face. Up beat, and think if we
:10:12. > :10:15.showed the same spirit. We will stay in the Premier League. Let ts remind
:10:16. > :10:19.you how the Barclays Premier League table looks at the moment.
:10:20. > :10:21.Sunderland in the bottom three, a point behind West Brom and of course
:10:22. > :10:26.they will remain in the bottom three because they are in FA Cup `ction
:10:27. > :10:29.against Hull. The bottom two, Cardiff and Fulham play each other
:10:30. > :10:34.in South Wales. Now, you touched on the sporters
:10:35. > :10:37.there, I remember back in 1873 you said they were like a 12th lan, how
:10:38. > :10:42.important are the supporters in the next 12 league games? It is
:10:43. > :10:46.fantastic watching them. I was at the game. They constantly kdpt going
:10:47. > :10:50.and it was indicative at thd end, when Kompany got his hands on the
:10:51. > :10:53.trophy, some supporters werd still there, thanking their players for
:10:54. > :10:58.their performance, normally at the end of the game, the losing team
:10:59. > :11:04.sporters do one quickly. Th`t I were there, they were with the tdam. It
:11:05. > :11:08.has to be galvanised. The Stadium of Light has to be galvanised for every
:11:09. > :11:12.game this season. And for this month. Let us remind you how the
:11:13. > :11:15.fixtures lock for March for Sunderland, because as we s`y it is
:11:16. > :11:20.FA Cup action this weekend, they could be going back to Wembley. They
:11:21. > :11:24.don't play again until the 05th when they entertain Crystal Palace, then
:11:25. > :11:28.trips to Norwich and Liverpool. The month ends to West Ham. Could they
:11:29. > :11:35.have an idea of their destiny by the end of the month? They are dasy
:11:36. > :11:39.fixtures aren't they! Straight forward. Especially away from home,
:11:40. > :11:44.I think they are performing well at home. What we have to do is take our
:11:45. > :11:47.away form to play at the St`dium of Light, because it is special playing
:11:48. > :11:51.there, but it adds more pressure on. I think the supporters can play
:11:52. > :11:55.their part, being the 12th lan. You have noticed the difference at home,
:11:56. > :12:00.Dennis. Again, talking about challenge fors the coach, that is
:12:01. > :12:06.his biggest challenge. He s`id the team, to counter attack, be strong
:12:07. > :12:10.at back, press in the midfidld and counter attack. At home it will be
:12:11. > :12:13.reverse, he will have to take the initiative. This is where the
:12:14. > :12:18.supporters can give their stpport. They have to be patient, don't get
:12:19. > :12:23.overanxious, because it is not the first goal in the first ten minute,
:12:24. > :12:29.it is the first goal. If it is the 90th minute. I remember in the mid #
:12:30. > :12:32.0s and that grey Liverpool team I used to say they don't care whether
:12:33. > :12:37.they win the game in the first minute or the 92nd minute, that is
:12:38. > :12:39.an important aspect that, the supporters and the player themselves
:12:40. > :12:43.had the believe in, Manchester United went for years, Gary, winning
:12:44. > :12:48.the last few minutes and th`t was a real art they have. They have lost
:12:49. > :12:53.it now but it is something hs a Sunderland... Dennis has taken a
:12:54. > :12:56.good word, belief. You have to remember when Gus Poyet camd in and
:12:57. > :13:01.took over, we only had one point and there was a lot people saying, they
:13:02. > :13:04.have thrown the towel in. Hd has got us not just in touching distance,
:13:05. > :13:09.off the bottom, you are talking there is Fulham playing Cardiff we
:13:10. > :13:13.would want a draw in that g`me. The only thing which is going to catch
:13:14. > :13:16.up with Sunderland is games. I was copping to that. They are playing
:13:17. > :13:22.Hull. If they win that, a ctp competition is going to a hdlp or
:13:23. > :13:28.hindrance He just wants to see find out the best team. Put them out
:13:29. > :13:33.there and get momentum and get wins. He won't care if it the cup or the
:13:34. > :13:38.league. They can get a lift. It creates a positivity, in thd fans
:13:39. > :13:41.have watched their team at Wembley. Everybody still hat a smile. Locking
:13:42. > :13:45.at the fixture, Poyet has bden stressing this for money, hd has
:13:46. > :13:50.been telling the players don't wait till next month, do it now. You lock
:13:51. > :13:54.at the fixtures and if they can get nine months they could be s`fe by
:13:55. > :13:59.the end of March, so Poyet will be banging that in, do it now, don t
:14:00. > :14:03.wait till April to do it. Pdople are talking about a pile up of fixture,
:14:04. > :14:06.Dennis will will tell you, the players would want to play games
:14:07. > :14:12.rather than train. If it is two games a week or three, they will
:14:13. > :14:17.want to play games. In 73 wd played nine games in the cups. Fixture
:14:18. > :14:23.congestion but we had a momdntum. The other big talking point was Alan
:14:24. > :14:26.Pardew, and the events at the KC Stadium.
:14:27. > :14:33.Newcastle's 4`1 victory at Hull was their seventh away win in the
:14:34. > :14:39.Premier League this season. But it wasn't the result that made all the
:14:40. > :14:44.headlines. Here is manager @lan Pardew's verdict on the inchdent
:14:45. > :14:48.between him and Hull's David Meyler. It was a situation where I shouldn't
:14:49. > :14:53.have been there. You know, H've been involved in a couple of inchdents in
:14:54. > :14:56.the line. And probably becatse I'm too near the action. I will be
:14:57. > :14:59.sitting down from now on. And quite rightly after that. I apologise to
:15:00. > :15:03.everyone. I shouldn't have got involved in it, really. It's not the
:15:04. > :15:11.first time you've been involved in touchline incidents. But probably
:15:12. > :15:20.the worst incident? Well, ydah. I mean, I don't mean no damagd to the
:15:21. > :15:24.guy. But I have put my head forward. I was just trying to push hhm away,
:15:25. > :15:27.really, with my head. And I shouldn't have done that. Btt I
:15:28. > :15:31.apologise to everyone concerned I think that is a little bit of a
:15:32. > :15:35.wake`up call to sit down. And I will from now on. Do you expect the
:15:36. > :15:39.punishment from the powers that be? Well, I don't know. I haven't had
:15:40. > :15:42.too many problems in the past, what I've had to deal with. But xou get
:15:43. > :15:46.involved in a situation that just took the gloss off what has been a
:15:47. > :15:50.magnificent performance frol my team. I set my team to break to set
:15:51. > :15:53.them up to break quickly. And time after time, we could have scored
:15:54. > :16:00.today. The players were terrific. It was only myself that unforttnately
:16:01. > :16:04.had poor performance all rotnd. Newcastle reacted straightaway.
:16:05. > :16:09.Today, Alan Pardew has been charged by the FA of improper conduct and
:16:10. > :16:15.has until Thursday to respond to that charge. Diamond, I am
:16:16. > :16:22.interested to know, when it happened, what was your reaction. ``
:16:23. > :16:26.Simon. The initial reaction was David Miller was at fault, but the
:16:27. > :16:32.replays came up and you saw the replays immediately. `` Davhd
:16:33. > :16:38.Meyler. I have covered the club for 12 years, the most socking hncident
:16:39. > :16:43.was one fight. That left as physically shaking. This was not
:16:44. > :16:49.quite up there, but not far off It is shameful for Alan Pardew
:16:50. > :16:52.individually and for the cltb. The FA reacted quickly, improper conduct
:16:53. > :16:58.charge, but what do you think that could lead to, such as stadhum
:16:59. > :17:02.bands? The FA have left it wide open. It has been called a
:17:03. > :17:09.nonstandard instant, never seeing a manager do this before. The guidance
:17:10. > :17:14.we have had is a stadium ban is possible, so Alan Pardew cotld not
:17:15. > :17:18.go near his team from one hour before kick`off until afterwards, no
:17:19. > :17:23.communication, but a three`lan panel will sit in the next week to decide,
:17:24. > :17:30.and it could be a five`game stadium ban, such as Paul Ince had. Is
:17:31. > :17:34.allowed in the ground? Gill macro may be see them in the hotel at one
:17:35. > :17:42.o'clock, then leave it to John Carver. That is the seriousness
:17:43. > :17:46.Dennis, at your time at Manchester city, you are pointed Joe Royle and
:17:47. > :17:52.Kevin Keegan, and if one of your managers do that, I would your board
:17:53. > :17:57.react? The way Newcastle have started, very quickly making a point
:17:58. > :18:02.felt, warning of formal contact fine, then waiting to see what the
:18:03. > :18:44.FA, but, nonstandard issue, skirmishes, is he blameless in
:18:45. > :18:50.this, the player? I think D`vid has done very well. He could easily have
:18:51. > :18:55.gone down and make a real bhg deal of it. If that happened, wh`t would
:18:56. > :19:02.have been said. David Meyler reacted well to it as well. I do not think
:19:03. > :19:06.he needed to go back to Alan Pardew after it was started. He is not
:19:07. > :19:11.completely blameless. Maybe a yellow card was about right. I would
:19:12. > :19:18.imagine, if it was some othdr player, they would have been rolling
:19:19. > :19:24.on the ground. Wasn't someone banned against Juventus? He was banned from
:19:25. > :19:29.the stadium? And if that happens, what effect on the dressing room?
:19:30. > :19:36.Without the manager, who gives the tactics? Maybe the coach? Btt the
:19:37. > :19:43.manager is the boss, the le`der and it does take an edge of it. It would
:19:44. > :19:47.take an edge off for me. If the coach was speaking to me, you would
:19:48. > :19:52.think all right, but it is ` big mess, you need your leaders there.
:19:53. > :19:57.The manager said disciplinary tone. And when he is one of the m`in
:19:58. > :20:01.offenders, it is a weaker c`se when disciplining players. The great pity
:20:02. > :20:06.is I think Alan is a great football coach and could go on furthdr beyond
:20:07. > :20:10.Newcastle, and we know he h`s England ambitions and peopld laugh
:20:11. > :20:14.at that, but there are not lany English men doing better th`n Alan
:20:15. > :20:21.Pardew, and his temperament ruining his reputation. He said he would
:20:22. > :20:25.have to sit on his hands, whth will we see a different paramedic
:20:26. > :20:28.paramedic? Think so. He has never lost that thing, he thinks he is one
:20:29. > :20:32.of the lads and one of the players still, he has been a very elotional
:20:33. > :20:36.expressive guy on the touchline and to us in the media, which wd
:20:37. > :20:40.appreciate. He will have to reign back and be the cool headed
:20:41. > :20:46.analytical one, rather than the guy in the fight and technical `rea Are
:20:47. > :20:49.you fearful for Newcastle's image? It is damaged now. I don't think it
:20:50. > :20:55.will get worse, that is verx sad. But I think what Alan did s`y, and
:20:56. > :20:58.he will put JC, John Carr vdry in the technical area which maxbe a
:20:59. > :21:02.good thing and let him get tsed to sitting back and communicathng in a
:21:03. > :21:07.different way, that is what the guys out there, they want to comlunicate
:21:08. > :21:10.directly with any little twdaks and tactical changes or encouragement,
:21:11. > :21:13.that is why they are there. He has to get used to communicating
