:00:20. > :00:24.On tonight's show, we reflect on all the talking points from
:00:25. > :00:27.Sunderland's trip to White Hart Lane.
:00:28. > :00:31.We discuss what has been another difficult weekend for Alan Pardew
:00:32. > :00:32.and Newcastle. And Hartlepool United managdr Colin
:00:33. > :00:42.Cooper talks to us. A very good evening. Welcomd along.
:00:43. > :00:46.Joining me in the studio tonight are two gentlemen who helped Sunderland
:00:47. > :00:49.to their highest ever Premidr league finish seventh. A warm welcome to
:00:50. > :00:55.Whitby town manager Darren Williams and his former team`mate Darren
:00:56. > :00:58.Holloway. Alongside them is our man in the know, Simon Bird of the Daily
:00:59. > :01:02.Mirror. We want you to play your part via Twitter. If you have any
:01:03. > :01:11.questions, send them in now using the details on the screen. Ht is the
:01:12. > :01:16.same route for your request for memories and the BBC sport `rchive
:01:17. > :01:22.to close the show. Tonight, full on Carlisle United nostalgia.
:01:23. > :01:26.First, Sunderland beaten 5`0 by Tottenham. Here is Gus Poyet's
:01:27. > :01:30.reaction. I think from the point of vhew of
:01:31. > :01:33.the manager, anything is a possibility, but when you analyse
:01:34. > :01:37.the game, and during the tile we were playing five at the back, it
:01:38. > :01:42.wasn't too easy for Tottenh`m to create something. They've m`de a
:01:43. > :01:47.couple of good crosses that we didn't defend very well, especially
:01:48. > :01:52.stopping the cross. But then you need to win, you can't just stay
:01:53. > :01:56.losing the Game 2`1 or going for a draw. It isn't worth it, so you need
:01:57. > :01:58.to throw a incapable of offdnsive players, and then all the
:01:59. > :02:04.organisation we have for thd beginning of the game went `way It
:02:05. > :02:07.was even easier than for Sptrs. We are missing if you things that are
:02:08. > :02:13.very important in football now. There is the quality in certain
:02:14. > :02:22.moments. We could be scoring a goal, or defending a one ag`inst one
:02:23. > :02:27.situation. That break in and of side one`way, that line is against you,
:02:28. > :02:33.and so there is plenty of things... There is no place to hide. We need
:02:34. > :02:36.to address every possibilitx, and me first, because I am the man`ger and
:02:37. > :02:42.I fully accept it. Seven pohnts and safety, seven games left. What sort
:02:43. > :02:49.of achievement would it lead to stay up? a miracle, probably. As strong
:02:50. > :02:52.as that? Well, I am realisthc. We have not won in the last six or
:02:53. > :02:57.seven games, and now we need to win 47. We need something very special.
:02:58. > :03:02.This is why he is being realistic. They are at the bottom of the table,
:03:03. > :03:07.seven points from safety. Sdven games to play, and the next few
:03:08. > :03:11.Everton at home, Manchester City away, and Chelsea away. Another bad
:03:12. > :03:17.night in north London, and Gus Poyet says they need a miracle.
:03:18. > :03:22.Do you believe in them? Yes, I think we need them, to be quite honest. It
:03:23. > :03:26.is a tough job, let's be honest The games coming up, you can't really
:03:27. > :03:29.see them getting out of it, but we all want to believe in Sunddrland,
:03:30. > :03:34.and we all hope for the best for them. You were watching with
:03:35. > :03:38.interest tonight and Gus Poxet's tactics. If he had changed from
:03:39. > :03:42.three at the back comedy thhng that might have made difference. It is
:03:43. > :03:48.difficult to tell. There has been a lot of scepticism with regard to
:03:49. > :03:54.tactics, of late. Gus Poyet more or less five at the back, but H think
:03:55. > :03:58.the confidence, regardless of the tactics, was probably the downfall
:03:59. > :04:03.tonight, and previously. We have talked before about the potdntial
:04:04. > :04:06.problems if they go down. They are obviously another step closdr to
:04:07. > :04:11.that night. Not just the finance of occasions of the club, but what
:04:12. > :04:14.about the playing squad? Thdre will be a huge turnaround. They have nine
:04:15. > :04:19.players out of contract, five on loan, that is 14 going. So ` huge
:04:20. > :04:24.turnaround will happen. When you look at their assets, Johnson, etc,
:04:25. > :04:28.who they can actually sell, those players want to stick around in the
:04:29. > :04:31.championship? I don't know. If they go down, they will have a htge
:04:32. > :04:34.turnaround. The good thing hs, if there is a good thing about what
:04:35. > :04:38.they got that done, we hear the players will take a 40% wagd cut,
:04:39. > :04:42.and they have stuck to that in the contract in the last two ye`rs. That
:04:43. > :04:46.protects them in terms of their wage bill, but all those players leaving
:04:47. > :04:50.given some leeway. Darren, xou have been promoted and relegated with
:04:51. > :04:55.Sunderland. How will those players be feeling tonight? Had dam`ging is
:04:56. > :04:59.the result now? It is massive, isn't it? Especially to lose in the manner
:05:00. > :05:02.they did tonight. They touched on it there, they're defending was not
:05:03. > :05:06.good enough. They did not gdt close enough to players, allowed players
:05:07. > :05:10.to put balls in the box. Th`t will hit the lads' confidence massively.
:05:11. > :05:15.If you look at the next thrde games, they are a tough three games. Back
:05:16. > :05:19.to your experience. How much of that confidence is worth when yot go onto
:05:20. > :05:24.the pitch? It is a massive, massive bonus. You get that by winnhng
:05:25. > :05:29.games, and some have not done that of late, so it is a case of trying
:05:30. > :05:34.to do things a bit differently, to instil that bit of confidence back
:05:35. > :05:37.in them. Basically, having faith and trust in the manager, whatever you
:05:38. > :05:43.are doing in training, to bring it back, because that is needed. Do you
:05:44. > :05:47.think there is a way out of it? If I am honest, no, I think they are too
:05:48. > :05:54.far gone. It was a big ask to start with, and like I say, I think it is
:05:55. > :05:59.too far gone now. They have to keep believing for players in thd
:06:00. > :06:01.dressing room, Demi? Of course, and for the remaining games, it is time
:06:02. > :06:06.to roll their sleeves up and give 110%. The time we were at
:06:07. > :06:10.Sunderland, if you show that week in and week out, the fans apprdciated,
:06:11. > :06:15.no matter the results. But the manner of the last night was not
:06:16. > :06:17.acceptable. Not a good night for Sunderland, or a good weekend for
:06:18. > :06:23.Newcastle either. Another l`cklustre display from them. Their sixth
:06:24. > :06:27.defeat in their last eight home league games. But Alan Parddw is
:06:28. > :06:31.determined not to let the sdason fizzle out. We have got everything
:06:32. > :06:36.to play for in terms of our pride and everything else, and we are
:06:37. > :06:40.lacking a little bit of quality at the moment. We are trying to get
:06:41. > :06:44.that on the pitch. We had some good effort today, some good comlitments
:06:45. > :06:47.from the players, certainly better than Southampton, but I'm afraid it
:06:48. > :06:53.wasn't good enough against ` decent United team today.
:06:54. > :06:57.I saw you at St James's Park on Saturday. Alan Pardew says they have
:06:58. > :07:02.pride to play for. Did you see that on Saturday? He talked about effort
:07:03. > :07:06.and commitment there. He talks a good game, usually quite honest but
:07:07. > :07:10.I find that quite bizarre. They were solid for the first 25 minutes.
:07:11. > :07:13.After that, a lot of fans wdre questioning whether that sqtad had
:07:14. > :07:17.given up for the summer. Thdy have to restore pride in the next few
:07:18. > :07:21.games. You get 50,000 every week, you must play for the shirt, and
:07:22. > :07:25.maximise your potential. Th`t is not happening at the moment. Darren
:07:26. > :07:30.have you ever been in the tdam in the position Newcastle are hn at the
:07:31. > :07:35.moment? And how difficult is that? Have you any sympathy with those
:07:36. > :07:39.players? I think it is a difficult scenario where you have nothing to
:07:40. > :07:44.play for, but from a player's point of view, I think it is pridd,
:07:45. > :07:51.personal pride, and you want to go out there and perform to thd best of
:07:52. > :07:55.your abilities. Whether that is having something to play for not. I
:07:56. > :08:00.think people should be able to enjoy the football. You don't set up
:08:01. > :08:06.training or anything like that to go and get beaten. I think the fans are
:08:07. > :08:09.owed a few good performances. News from Newcastle to layers pellets are
:08:10. > :08:11.evident, because they have `ppointed a new managing director.
:08:12. > :08:17.That is the former football secretary. The owners also
:08:18. > :08:20.informally imported to the board of directors. And some headlinds with
:08:21. > :08:24.very long statement issued by Newcastle say that the transfer
:08:25. > :08:29.policy is very clear. It relains unchanged. We don't like it transfer
:08:30. > :08:33.windows in isolation, but as a full trading year, and our attention for
:08:34. > :08:36.the first team is to sign one or two players per year to strengthen the
:08:37. > :08:41.squad. What do you make of that That statement there, that hs in
:08:42. > :08:45.direct contradiction to what Alan Pardew says, that someone h`s to be
:08:46. > :08:49.for Newcastle. He says it is going to be a big summer, and he hs
:08:50. > :08:51.looking for two strikers and a creative midfielder. If thex are
:08:52. > :08:54.only going to give him 12 players in summer, they will have problems next
:08:55. > :08:59.year. They must protect agahnst relegation. There is not much of a
:09:00. > :09:03.get there. Is that the type of thing Newcastle fans want to hear at this
:09:04. > :09:06.stage in the season? I would never complain about a full and ddtailed
:09:07. > :09:11.statement because at least they are communicating. But it is more of the
:09:12. > :09:14.same. The club wants to bal`nce the books, great, but you can't play a
:09:15. > :09:18.balance sheet. They need yotng players with potential. Thehr crowds
:09:19. > :09:21.are 50,000, and they must h`ve essential to break that and go for a
:09:22. > :09:25.big player now and then. I don't will inspire the players, btt not a
:09:26. > :09:28.surprise either. One more brighter note, since Craig Hignett rdturned
:09:29. > :09:33.to Middlesbrough as assistant manager, they have picked up 12
:09:34. > :09:37.points from a possible 21 and lost only once. It was another h`ppy
:09:38. > :09:49.result on Saturday. Clearly inspired by his latd
:09:50. > :09:53.kick`off appearances, Georgd friend received Middlesbrough's pl`yer of
:09:54. > :09:57.the year award ahead of this match, with Steve McLaren's promothon
:09:58. > :10:01.chasing Derby County. Clear cut chances were few and far between in
:10:02. > :10:05.the early stages, with Boro's Lee Tomlin having the best opportunity,
:10:06. > :10:09.firing straight at the Derbx keeper league run. In the second h`lf, the
:10:10. > :10:15.goalkeeper kept at an effort from Craig Bryson, before substitute
:10:16. > :10:19.Emmanuel Adebayor set up Nathan Challinor to tuck away the decisive
:10:20. > :10:23.goal of the game. Jake Buxton came closest to levelling things up for
:10:24. > :10:27.the visitors on their first return to the Riverside since his 2006
:10:28. > :10:33.departure, but Boro held out. That is three matches undefeated now for
:10:34. > :10:35.them. They remain 13th in the championship, still 11 points off
:10:36. > :10:41.the play`off positions, and seemingly destined for a mid`table
:10:42. > :10:45.finish. Darren, you are a Middlesbrough boy,
:10:46. > :10:51.and have you seen any posithve signs the next season from them? Xes, they
:10:52. > :10:56.have tightened up and becomd more solid. They are winning gamds fairly
:10:57. > :11:00.closely, but it is things lhke that, and I think Craig has probably
:11:01. > :11:05.gone in there and influence that. He has made a big difference. Hn terms
:11:06. > :11:09.of recruitment, what is your understanding? A busy summer at
:11:10. > :11:14.Newcastle? It is a busy sumler. I think their first port of c`ll will
:11:15. > :11:18.be to get players back on loan. There are a lot out of contract
:11:19. > :11:22.along with one year left on their deals, so Jason Steele, do they sell
:11:23. > :11:26.him, do they sell Grant Leadbetter? All of that sort of thing whll have
:11:27. > :11:32.to be sorted out. Will they go to Spain for young kids? A lot of
:11:33. > :11:36.change. And interesting so H had. Now, after a difficult march with
:11:37. > :11:40.only four points from a possible 21, Carlisle's win over Swindon town
:11:41. > :11:44.on Saturday brought some welcome relief for fans of the club,
:11:45. > :11:45.including some with links to the glory days of 40 years ago. Our
:11:46. > :11:57.reporter has more. If you'd dreamt that Carlisle United
:11:58. > :12:00.had gone into the first divhsion, let me tell you, it was no dream. It
:12:01. > :12:03.really did happen. # Here we come, blue and whhte, and
:12:04. > :12:21.we're looking good. 1974. Flares, fans and footballing
:12:22. > :12:22.heroes. Carlisle's season in the sun.
:12:23. > :12:28.# Carlisle United. # The team that's on the ball.
:12:29. > :12:30.# Carlisle United. Talking to the supporters, the
:12:31. > :12:36.memories they have, the way they talk about it, it's unbelievable.
:12:37. > :12:41.Les O'Neill, midfielder, milkman and still scouting today.
:12:42. > :12:57.We have that desire to try `nd get there, and that's what got ts there,
:12:58. > :13:00.the hunger of wanting to do it. Fantastic team spirit, and two or
:13:01. > :13:10.three game changers. There was me and Chris Balderstone, that's a game
:13:11. > :13:13.changer. Voted player of thd year in that promotion season was goalkeeper
:13:14. > :13:17.Alan Ross, and still, the club's most capped player. That's when I
:13:18. > :13:20.was at play school. That was Dad's 350 appearances. I remember coming
:13:21. > :13:24.home from play school and fhnding a photographer in the house, so I
:13:25. > :13:28.think I just jumped in. I don't think he got a choice. But H do like
:13:29. > :13:32.that one. Nobody could be more proud of their parents than my sister and
:13:33. > :13:35.I, of what Dad achieved, and since Dad's death, finding out wh`t he
:13:36. > :13:41.meant to other people and what the people remember about the '74
:13:42. > :13:44.season, it's absolutely supdrb. Just proud as punch. Oh, yes, yes.
:13:45. > :13:49.Memories, memories of that season will never go. Never go.
:13:50. > :13:55.Once in the top flight, could life get any better? We just got on a
:13:56. > :13:58.roll, and we just felt that... It didn't matter who we were playing,
:13:59. > :14:02.we just felt we could win every game.
:14:03. > :14:11.And he scores! It was a fluke. I mean, it's just a
:14:12. > :14:15.simple as that! My intention was to just clip it in for Hughie, or cut
:14:16. > :14:21.across it, and the ball went the other way. We won the game 2`0, and
:14:22. > :14:28.I got one of the goals. You know, that's it, isn't it? You've made it,
:14:29. > :14:32.sort of thing. How many is going to be there today, then? I don't know.
:14:33. > :14:35.Today's opponents Swindon are not as glamorous, but they are the team
:14:36. > :14:38.this time you are pushing for promotion.
:14:39. > :14:46.But it's an improved Carlisle who have the share of possession, and
:14:47. > :14:52.are rewarded late in the first half. New signing Gary Madine rep`ys the
:14:53. > :14:57.faith but in him by the club. Well done, son.
:14:58. > :15:12.In the second half, Carlisld cling on to their lead. No! Oh, wdll done,
:15:13. > :15:17.Jordan. They've lost their shape. Well, the shape they kept in the
:15:18. > :15:19.first half, it's just gone. But the Blues hang on and gain a valuable
:15:20. > :15:29.three points. Yes! A good win today. We needed that
:15:30. > :15:33.win. We held on and held on. They deserved it, definitely.
:15:34. > :15:39.Everyone goes home happy, jtst like at the start of the '74 season.
:15:40. > :15:42.As Mum says, it won't ever, ever be forgotten. With all these mdmories
:15:43. > :15:53.of that season in the sun, brilliant, fantastic. It won't
:15:54. > :16:00.happen again, though. It was a big result for Carlisle United. It is
:16:01. > :16:09.very tight. Eight points ard separating ten teams. Some great
:16:10. > :16:12.memories from Carlisle Unitdd. When we talk to you about Carlisle
:16:13. > :16:20.United, though I memories from your career? They gave me my football
:16:21. > :16:30.league debut. I have fond mdmories of playing there. Unfortunately the
:16:31. > :16:36.manager at the time got sacked. `` Fortunately. I say that bec`use he
:16:37. > :16:45.played me out of position and the new manager came in and he played me
:16:46. > :16:54.in possession. `` position. From the start I had there, I got my foothold
:16:55. > :17:04.in the game. And one of your former team`mates are still going strong?
:17:05. > :17:11.He has got a great influencd. He has also got the thing where he can take
:17:12. > :17:17.pressure off players. And G`ry Madine getting the goal is not a
:17:18. > :17:24.straightforward transfer story? It could prove quite a bargain. He
:17:25. > :17:30.could make the difference bdtween Carlisle United staying up.
:17:31. > :17:31.Let's round up the rest of the Football League action now with
:17:32. > :17:41.Simon Pryde. Let's round up the rest
:17:42. > :17:44.York City travelled to Leagte Two leaders Rochdale, having kick six
:17:45. > :17:48.clean sheets in their last six games. And their defence ag`in held
:17:49. > :17:51.firm at Spotland. Nick Pope was the busier of the two goalkeepers ` this
:17:52. > :17:54.save from Scott Hogan's effort ensuring a share of the spohls.
:17:55. > :17:57.Nigel Worthington's side move into the play`off positions, where
:17:58. > :18:03.they'll seek to establish themselves with three of their next fotr
:18:04. > :18:06.fixtures at home. Hartlepool fans are starting to look
:18:07. > :18:09.a little nervously over thehr shoulders. They conceded an early
:18:10. > :18:12.goal at Portsmouth when Andx Rafferty couldn't hold on to a
:18:13. > :18:17.header from a free kick and Adam Webster was there to pounce.
:18:18. > :18:20.Rafferty, who was making his debut, found himself facing a penalty after
:18:21. > :18:27.Christian Burgess tripped Wds Fogden. But the keeper was tp to the
:18:28. > :18:32.task and saved Ryan Taylor's spot kick. Ricky Holmes fired thd rebound
:18:33. > :18:35.over. Pools' best chance from leading scorer Luke James, but they
:18:36. > :18:38.couldn't come up with an eqtaliser and a fourth straight defeat means
:18:39. > :18:46.they find themselves just shx points above the relegation zone.
:18:47. > :18:52.So, Hartlepool heading in the wrong direction. It's been a diffhcult few
:18:53. > :18:58.weeks for Pools boss Colin Cooper ` as Dawn Thewlis reports.
:18:59. > :19:01.They arrived at Hartlepool together ` ex`Boro boys Colin Cooper and
:19:02. > :19:06.Craig Hignett came to begin a new era at Victoria Park. Some dven drew
:19:07. > :19:11.parallels with Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, whose managerhal
:19:12. > :19:13.journey also started here. @lthough they hadn't worked together before,
:19:14. > :19:19.they quickly developed a strong relationship as they planned for the
:19:20. > :19:23.future. The average tenure for a manager in the Football League is 13
:19:24. > :19:30.months. That's average, somd are less. Some will hang around longer.
:19:31. > :19:39.In order to be able to build something, you've got to have time
:19:40. > :19:42.to do that. All I would say is, in the first seven months, we're trying
:19:43. > :19:49.to organise it the way we w`nt to organise it. We have a plan we work
:19:50. > :19:52.to. We're getting there. After relegation from League One, the
:19:53. > :19:54.priority was to stabilise the club, but decent results meant thd
:19:55. > :19:58.play`offs remained tantalishngly within reach. Then, after a 3`0
:19:59. > :20:07.thumping of Torquay United, everything changed. The chance to
:20:08. > :20:14.return to the club where he spent six years as a player was shmply
:20:15. > :20:18.impossible to resist. It cale out of the blue a little bit but once the
