:00:23. > :00:32.On tonight's show, Alan Pardew was back with Arsenal tonight. We

:00:33. > :00:37.reflect on the match. Sunderland are back in the safety zone after a

:00:38. > :00:42.miraculous 12 days. And Gateshead have a huge week ahead of them in

:00:43. > :00:49.the quest to win back their place in the football league.

:00:50. > :00:51.Hello. Good evening, welcome along again.

:00:52. > :00:54.We are delighted to be in the company of two of the region's

:00:55. > :00:57.managers ` former Middlesbrough defender and now Hartlepool boss,

:00:58. > :01:00.Colin Cooper and Gary Mills, of Gateshead. Simon Bird, of the Daily

:01:01. > :01:05.Mirror, returns to give us our journalistic insight.

:01:06. > :01:08.As ever, you can play your part and get in touch with us tonight with

:01:09. > :01:11.any questions for the guys. Our archive slot later tonight goes back

:01:12. > :01:21.to a Manchester United v Sunderland classic from the 1970s.

:01:22. > :01:25.Let's start with Alan Pardew's return to the dugout tonight for the

:01:26. > :01:31.first time in almost two months as Newcastle at Arsenal. Here's his

:01:32. > :01:35.post match thoughts. We find ourselves in this run, and

:01:36. > :01:40.the only thing that we can do to get out of it is to show the character

:01:41. > :01:44.that we did tonight. Hopefully the opposition will not be as good as

:01:45. > :01:49.Arsenal tonight. It is a lonely place to be a

:01:50. > :01:53.football manager in the midst of such a run. You seem to be quite

:01:54. > :01:58.cheerful and have the appetite still. I think it is important when

:01:59. > :02:02.you are leading a group to be strong. I know that I have the

:02:03. > :02:13.greatest support in the country, but not when you have six defeats. I

:02:14. > :02:19.know that our fans will turn up and make the stadium positive, because

:02:20. > :02:25.the players need that confidence. If we can get that win under our belt,

:02:26. > :02:28.things will look better. We will be in the top ten all year, we hope to

:02:29. > :02:36.stay there. They stayed there tonight, two

:02:37. > :02:44.points above Stoke. Liverpool away on the final day.

:02:45. > :02:50.Great to see you. Being a manager, six defeats in a row for Newcastle.

:02:51. > :02:56.Do you have empathy? Yes, it was only a week ago that I

:02:57. > :03:03.was on the verge of the six myself. We lost an important game, and 1`nil

:03:04. > :03:10.down. You wonder. But, luckily for me, the boys managed to turn it

:03:11. > :03:14.around and win. What Alan is saying about the Newcastle fans, they will

:03:15. > :03:18.be very important on Saturday. I have been there when they are all

:03:19. > :03:22.urging you to victory, and that is what they need, a positive end to

:03:23. > :03:27.the season. I think what Alan is saying, Arsenal were better the

:03:28. > :03:31.Newcastle this evening, but they did not defend the first goal well

:03:32. > :03:35.enough and the officials did not help them for the second goal, two

:03:36. > :03:41.out of the three. But they have to finish positively, and 52,000

:03:42. > :03:48.Geordies will get them going. Newcastle have lost 14 of their last

:03:49. > :03:54.19 games. How does a manager stop that? We talk about getting results.

:03:55. > :03:58.You want to win, but when you go through a period of not winning,

:03:59. > :04:05.view make sure that you don't lose. I think to be solid, pick up a

:04:06. > :04:09.couple of draw matches, they will hopefully get the confidence to win

:04:10. > :04:13.the next game. It is great to win, but going through a period of not

:04:14. > :04:19.winning, it is important that you do not lose. You will be there on

:04:20. > :04:23.Saturday, he is asking for the crowd to be positive?

:04:24. > :04:28.It is a dangerous thing to say. I think he needs to concentrate on his

:04:29. > :04:35.own team. His team have not scored for 13 of the last 18 games. If the

:04:36. > :04:39.team are not scoring goals or providing entertainment,

:04:40. > :04:44.surrendering quite meekly like they did tonight, looking like they are

:04:45. > :04:50.not good enough, repeated set of mistakes since January, he should

:04:51. > :04:54.concentrate the team. The fans back him all the time, there has barely

:04:55. > :05:01.been a murmur. How important is the top ten Fisher

:05:02. > :05:05.`` finish? It is very important. If they do not win that, they are under

:05:06. > :05:13.a lot of pressure. They need to win over a lot of fans.

:05:14. > :05:17.Now, a few weeks ago Gus Poyet was hoping for a Sunderland miracle with

:05:18. > :05:19.his team seven points adrift of safety. It's been a remarkable

:05:20. > :05:24.turnaround since. You look at the table and at the

:05:25. > :05:35.games, how many that we need to win. I think we need a miracle.

:05:36. > :05:42.# Are you waiting for a miracle? #.

:05:43. > :05:45.With Sunderland, anything can happen.

:05:46. > :05:49.It certainly did. Yesterday's 4`0 win over Cardiff means Sunderland

:05:50. > :05:52.are out of the bottom three for the first time since early February, to

:05:53. > :05:59.the relief of Gus Poyet. Between the staff and the players,

:06:00. > :06:10.they never stop. You never know. It is not a miracle, but it is becoming

:06:11. > :06:17.a reality. Still plenty to do. You don't want to think that it is

:06:18. > :06:21.over? No, everything can change. We have been in the bottom and we could

:06:22. > :06:27.be in the bottom again, so we need to make sure that we do not miss the

:06:28. > :06:34.opportunity. This has been a nice surprise.

:06:35. > :06:42.Three games to go, out of the drop zone on goal difference. On the

:06:43. > :06:45.other side, seven points from nine out of nowhere, sometimes with a

:06:46. > :06:51.player and a manager, do you feel that momentum and it comes from

:06:52. > :06:55.somewhere? Yes, it has been very difficult. We

:06:56. > :07:00.need a miracle. They have given themselves a belief and with belief

:07:01. > :07:09.comes confidence. The reverse is what happens in later. Watching them

:07:10. > :07:15.play against Cardiff yesterday, you can see what was happening, winning

:07:16. > :07:19.the two home games, job done. At the start of the season, you would have

:07:20. > :07:23.accepted that, but I have been very impressed with them.

:07:24. > :07:31.Often, from the manager's point of view, you need a catalyst. He has

:07:32. > :07:38.had that from Connor. Is that look, is that judgement? He has called him

:07:39. > :07:43.back from Leeds where he did not score.

:07:44. > :07:47.Strikers score goals but they think that they can score every week. They

:07:48. > :07:54.go through a period of not scoring and then they do not think they can

:07:55. > :07:59.score again. He has five goals now, it looks like he could score every

:08:00. > :08:04.time. The mental side of the game is incredible. To get that confidence

:08:05. > :08:08.as a team, going to Manchester City and Chelsea to pick up four points.

:08:09. > :08:15.The confidence and belief that would have given them, a 4`0 win game at

:08:16. > :08:21.home. No difference with the team. The confidence built up over those

:08:22. > :08:23.games are amazing. You were there yesterday.

:08:24. > :08:29.How different was the atmosphere at the end? It was different at the

:08:30. > :08:34.start as well. It did not feel like a club at the bottom of the table.

:08:35. > :08:40.Everyone was singing however thing would be all right. That transmitted

:08:41. > :08:47.itself to the players. He has safety form, and rightly showed there

:08:48. > :08:51.should be a positive atmosphere. Is the danger that the job is done as

:08:52. > :08:56.he says? He should not get complacent. It

:08:57. > :09:03.always looks like a lifeline. They should finish the job now.

:09:04. > :09:07.Some of our teams enjoyed a happier Easter period than others. Here is

:09:08. > :09:10.Simon Pryde with the latest action. Two defeats over Easter had ended

:09:11. > :09:16.Middlesbrough's faint hopes of the championships, and Barnsley took the

:09:17. > :09:20.lead at the Riverside. Former Sunderland defender Jean`Yves M'voto

:09:21. > :09:24.put the ball into the net. But it took Lee Tomlin less than a minute

:09:25. > :09:28.to get things back on level terms. The game looked to be heading for a

:09:29. > :09:32.draw until Danny Graham pounced to score from close range, his fifth

:09:33. > :09:38.goal of the season. And it was still time to net his second of the game,

:09:39. > :09:42.13 for him. And Boro could still end up in the top half of the table by

:09:43. > :09:48.the end of the season. For Barnsley, relegation.

:09:49. > :09:51.Carlisle hosted Walsall on Good Friday, desperate for points in

:09:52. > :09:55.their battle against relegation from League One. Liam Noble's first half

:09:56. > :09:57.effort via the post and keeper Richard O' Donnell perked up the

:09:58. > :10:01.home supporters whose fingernails had become well gnawed by the time

:10:02. > :10:10.Michael Ngoo equalised five minutes from time, to deny United a couple

:10:11. > :10:14.of precious points. It was always going to be tough for

:10:15. > :10:15.the Cumbrians on Easter Monday, against promotion chasing

:10:16. > :10:19.Peterborough. Conor Washington struck inside the first quarter of

:10:20. > :10:21.an hour, and ten minutes into the second`half, Reece Brown's handball

:10:22. > :10:29.allowed Britt Assombalonga to double the advantage from the penalty spot.

:10:30. > :10:32.Lee Miller's well taken effort gave Carlisle hope, but then on loan

:10:33. > :10:35.keeper Jordan Pickford fouled Assombalonga, who again made no

:10:36. > :10:42.mistake from the spot, his 32tnd goal this season. Michael Bostwick's

:10:43. > :10:45.long`range effort wrapped things up for the home side, leaving Graham

:10:46. > :10:58.Kavanagh's team firmly in the relegation zone.

:10:59. > :11:02.We are away from home against a good team. We are still in the league and

:11:03. > :11:04.with the extra game, if we can win, we can give ourselves a fighting

:11:05. > :11:08.chance. So, the pressure was very much on

:11:09. > :11:14.Kavanagh and his players for Oldham and it was a nervous affair. Oldham

:11:15. > :11:19.substitute James Dayton broke the deadlock. Carlisle rallied, but were

:11:20. > :11:26.denied by a visiting keeper who kept out efforts first from Redmond and

:11:27. > :11:28.then David Symington. The Cumbrians travel to Crawley tomorrow night,

:11:29. > :11:38.knowing that defeat would condemn them to League Two next season.

:11:39. > :11:42.1`0 to the Minster Man could do as York's unofficial anthem. They

:11:43. > :11:45.dispatched Oxford and Bury to that score, when Lee Minshull missed the

:11:46. > :11:55.best opportunity, what happened next was inevitable. The effort that hit

:11:56. > :11:58.the bar served as a warning. The second`half free kick proved to be a

:11:59. > :12:01.winner, securing a seventh 1`0 win since the beginning, and confirming

:12:02. > :12:09.that place in the League Two play`offs.

:12:10. > :12:14.The alarm bells had been ringing loudly for Hartlepool for some time.

:12:15. > :12:18.They became deafening on Easter Saturday. Albion in front, Jimmy

:12:19. > :12:21.Phillips added a second in the second`half and as Hartlepool began

:12:22. > :12:31.to tire, Lee Bell's free kick secured a 3`0 win.

:12:32. > :12:35.So they went into Monday's clash with Morecambe on the back of six

:12:36. > :12:39.straight defeats and when Kevin Ellison's header put the visitors in

:12:40. > :12:44.front, home supporters felt here we go again. The mood was not helped by

:12:45. > :12:51.this foul midway through the second half. Things were looking bleak,

:12:52. > :12:54.until the substitute Jack Compton put Hartlepool level, and then Jack

:12:55. > :13:09.Barnsley completed the comeback, ensuring leaked to survival, to the

:13:10. > :13:13.relief for everyone. So, Hartlepool were able to enjoy a

:13:14. > :13:20.pressure free trip, caught off`guard by Jason Banton, a wonderful

:13:21. > :13:22.individual effort. But Jack Barmby took advantage of the mistake in the

:13:23. > :13:27.second half to equalise and sparked second half to equalise and sparked

:13:28. > :13:30.a pitch invasion of Thunderbirds. The result leaves Hartlepool 17th in

:13:31. > :13:40.League Two, just above Wimbledon, who today had three points deducted.

:13:41. > :13:51.That means Hartlepool boat or a place without even taking a ball! ``

:13:52. > :13:58.go up a place. Was Morecambe full of tension and relief? Tension,

:13:59. > :14:03.emotions. We needed to give the lads the belief. You are losing games but

:14:04. > :14:12.not by much. Keep believing in what we are trying to do. We were a goal

:14:13. > :14:16.down. Simon Walton got sent off. I made a couple of substitutions and

:14:17. > :14:22.was getting criticised by some of the supporters but I accept that,

:14:23. > :14:30.you have to make decisions. Both players scored so I got that right.

:14:31. > :14:35.Have you enjoyed the season? Every minute of it, I have been trying to

:14:36. > :14:41.get into it many years. I said four years ago this was what I wanted and

:14:42. > :14:45.I am relishing get. It is hard work and you are travelling and you see

:14:46. > :14:51.little of your family. `` relishing it. I have long wanted it and I am

:14:52. > :14:59.enjoying it. How much of a challenge is it in that division given the

:15:00. > :15:03.restraints? When I took the job, everything was in place, the players

:15:04. > :15:09.contracts had been sorted. They have worked hard and what we have to do

:15:10. > :15:14.is reassessed over the summer and find a solution to make us better.

:15:15. > :15:22.Wherever we finish up in the table is not had enough so I have the

:15:23. > :15:27.finances. `` good enough. You get challenges as managers, I guess you

:15:28. > :15:33.did not see your assistant going midweek! He got offered an

:15:34. > :15:38.opportunity that was difficult to turn down. We had a plan to stay at

:15:39. > :15:44.Hartlepool and do the best job we can, that did not happen. I have had

:15:45. > :15:49.to put more hours in and more miles at with no bad feeling towards

:15:50. > :15:53.Craig, we are still good friends. My job over the summer is to recruit

:15:54. > :15:57.staff that give me the support I need and players to finish better in

:15:58. > :16:05.the league and hopefully get into the play`offs or better. I guess it

:16:06. > :16:12.is no coincidence your former club was Mac fortunes have gone up since

:16:13. > :16:18.Craig went. `` your former club's fortunes. Craig is good at his job,

:16:19. > :16:22.he had been hovering around doing different jobs and I asked him to

:16:23. > :16:28.commit full`time. He did that and he was good at his job and that was

:16:29. > :16:32.recognised by Middlesbrough who offered him the opportunity. We

:16:33. > :16:37.could not prevent that. My job as manager is to find somebody as good

:16:38. > :16:42.if not better to support me and give us a chance to mount a challenge

:16:43. > :16:48.next year and give Hartlepool a chance to get out of this league.

:16:49. > :16:54.Graham Kavanagh and Carlisle, a big week, if they lose tomorrow, they

:16:55. > :17:00.are down. The run that they are on now is bad and you can see what it

:17:01. > :17:06.means to Graham Kavanagh. A miracle is needed in the next games. You led

:17:07. > :17:10.York City into the football league and they are in the play`offs. They

:17:11. > :17:19.have done well, they are in the play`off position. Michael Coulson

:17:20. > :17:24.scores week in and week out, I took him to the club. He had bad injuries

:17:25. > :17:29.but he is a good player and is coming good. Gateshead are the

:17:30. > :17:32.in`form team in the Conference, currently 12 unbeaten in their quest

:17:33. > :17:36.to return to the Football League since they were voted out in 1960.

:17:37. > :17:40.This is only their fifth season back at this level. Simon Pryde went to

:17:41. > :17:48.their crucial final league match at home to Cambridge.

:17:49. > :17:54.Today, it's a decent place to have a kickabout with your mates, but if

:17:55. > :17:57.you'd been standing on this spot 54 years and one day ago, you'd have

:17:58. > :18:03.witnessed Gateshead's last ever goal as a football league club. Now

:18:04. > :18:11.they're potentially just four games away from a return to the big time.

:18:12. > :18:15.Just what would it mean if Gateshead could do it and get back into the

:18:16. > :18:19.Football League? I think it would be a marvellous achievement because I

:18:20. > :18:22.was there 54 years ago when we were relegated, in 1960, in the days when

:18:23. > :18:27.they played at Redheugh Park. Just down the road from here. For the

:18:28. > :18:32.long`suffering supporters, it would be great. We have waited for this a

:18:33. > :18:36.long time. A bit of pressure, what is going to

:18:37. > :18:40.happen today? We will come straight out of the traps and score two

:18:41. > :18:44.goals, then take our foot off a bit. We're going to win though. We need

:18:45. > :18:49.it, we need to get the points. Three`nil. I would love that! What

:18:50. > :18:53.sort of form are Gateshead taking into this game? Against Southport,

:18:54. > :18:57.it was a late equaliser and that goal was crucial from Jamie

:18:58. > :19:00.Chandler. They then went to Macclesfield on Easter Monday and

:19:01. > :19:04.Colin Larkin set us up with an early goal. They got a second after

:19:05. > :19:09.half`time through Marcus Maddison, who has been really exciting in the

:19:10. > :19:12.second half of the season. And that has meant they go into this game

:19:13. > :19:16.with Cambridge three points clear of Braintree, knowing all they need is

:19:17. > :19:19.a point. The reality is that you are just

:19:20. > :19:22.four good results away from a return to the Football League, is that

:19:23. > :19:26.something you are allowing yourself to think about? Oh, yes. I have been

:19:27. > :19:30.thinking about it every day, for a long time.

:19:31. > :19:34.What would it mean if it happened? Well, I don't know, we would be

:19:35. > :19:47.looking at where we go next. What else to you do in football? `` do

:19:48. > :19:52.you do. You always have to have a goal, don't you? It has gone in!

:19:53. > :19:53.From absolutely nothing! He has crossed the ball from almost a

:19:54. > :20:08.corner flag. Right`hand side. They can attack

:20:09. > :20:17.now. To the left. This is a chance for Larkin!

:20:18. > :20:26.Rob Ramshaw, deflected. Here is the corner. Ramshaw, yes! Rob Ramshaw

:20:27. > :20:35.slides to his knees in front of the main stand. It is a second goal and

:20:36. > :20:43.surely a goal that confirms their place in the play`offs!

:20:44. > :20:49.Gateshead are into the Conference play`offs. The next step for Gary

:20:50. > :20:55.Mills and his team is to try to get to Wembley.

:20:56. > :21:03.It means everything. We've got an honest bunch of lads in there that

:21:04. > :21:06.give their all every week. And we've got a new management team that have

:21:07. > :21:09.come in and they've completely changed the mindset of the whole

:21:10. > :21:12.dressing room, and I'm just really pleased for the lads in there

:21:13. > :21:17.because they fully deserve it. We don't want it to end here, we want

:21:18. > :21:21.to go to Wembley and get promoted. What are some of the achievements of

:21:22. > :21:25.Gary Mills and his team this season? It is there for all to see. Just a

:21:26. > :21:28.couple of games ago, we were 18 points behind Cambridge, and we

:21:29. > :21:32.finish the season just three points behind. It begs the question, where

:21:33. > :21:36.would we have been if Gary had been here from the get`go? He has brought

:21:37. > :21:41.a few tricks from Brian Clough as well, so he keeps them interested!

:21:42. > :21:50.The chairman wants to talk about Brian Clough, what is your best

:21:51. > :21:57.trick? What I learned from him is that it is a simple game, keep

:21:58. > :22:03.things basic, everybody has to know their job and enjoyed the game. It

:22:04. > :22:08.is a long time, a season, and you have two enjoyed it from day one.

:22:09. > :22:13.You have good and bad times but you have to smile `` you have to enjoy

:22:14. > :22:19.it. I learned that with the boss. But with my own philosophies and how

:22:20. > :22:23.I like things done. The skipper said he has an honest dressing room. And

:22:24. > :22:28.we have, they have been fantastic. We have got to the play`offs and we

:22:29. > :22:33.want to take it further and get to Wembley. When you arrived in

:22:34. > :22:39.September, did you believe a top three finish? Gateshead's higher ``

:22:40. > :22:44.highest ever conference finish, did you think that was possible? We

:22:45. > :22:50.played Wrexham and it was atrocious, the third game. After

:22:51. > :22:53.that, I thought, no. Players have listened and they have worked hard

:22:54. > :22:58.and we deserve to get to where we have got to. Third is an incredible

:22:59. > :23:03.achievement from the players and the club. We have got that advantage now

:23:56. > :24:01.that, we go into a Champions League semifinal to get to the final at

:25:37. > :25:40.about good players, you can find them if you look hard enough. Gary

:25:41. > :25:46.will be working under similar financial constraints and you have

:26:10. > :26:15.players young and old to make us better. A lot of well`wishers to

:26:16. > :26:21.Gateshead. Good luck in the play`offs. If you were to go up, or
