:00:01. > :00:11.Graham Westley told this programme that his Preston strategy would

:00:11. > :00:29.

:00:29. > :00:34.mean short term pain for long term Getting to grips with Graham.

:00:34. > :00:41.you walk in the door and you think, I'm going to wave a magic wand on

:00:41. > :00:47.this, you are a fall. Why TV times are about to get hard. How our

:00:47. > :00:54.clubs will be coping with new deals. And it is 11 out of 11, Preston and

:00:54. > :00:57.their money take their turn at the most fun quiz. With me in the

:00:57. > :00:59.studio, a man hoping to be back in the Premeir League next season,

:01:00. > :01:01.Blackpool midfielder Keith Southern. And a former manager of Burnley,

:01:02. > :01:05.Bury and Blackpool too. Welcome to Stan Ternent.

:01:05. > :01:08.Now, if you believe everything you read in the papers, all isn't well

:01:08. > :01:11.at Preston North End, both on and off the pitch. As well as reports

:01:11. > :01:14.of fall outs with his players, manager Graham Westley had overseen

:01:14. > :01:18.just two victories going into the weekend. On this programme a few

:01:18. > :01:23.weeks ago, he used the phrase short term pain for long term gain, but

:01:23. > :01:31.is that pain finally starting to wane? We sent along the former

:01:31. > :01:34.Oldham striker Andy Ritchie along Coming to Deepdale can't have been

:01:34. > :01:37.much fun at times this season. But with any lingering relegation

:01:37. > :01:47.worries all but gone - the fans are hopeful about the future, under

:01:47. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:52.manager Graham Westley. Every fan wants success. If he brings it, I'm

:01:52. > :01:56.happy with that. They needed a kick up the backside, which is what they

:01:56. > :02:01.have been given. I hope that it will go right in the end. He talks

:02:01. > :02:11.a good talk so we are optimistic. We are not quite sure what is going

:02:11. > :02:13.

:02:13. > :02:21.to happen. We need to give him time. But you optimistic? Yes.

:02:21. > :02:25.I was hoping to see my friends down there, we keep saying to keep the

:02:25. > :02:30.faith. Very optimistic for the end of the season, and next season

:02:30. > :02:33.particularly. I will bring you my season ticket.

:02:33. > :02:36.But the stats don't lie, and under Graham Westley results have been

:02:36. > :02:44.fairly underwhelming. Play off chasers Huddersfield promised to be

:02:44. > :02:47.one of the new era's biggest tests the League's top scorer Jordan

:02:47. > :02:57.Rhodes coming close on a few occasions, though it wasn't all one

:02:57. > :03:06.

:03:06. > :03:11.way traffic, as Preston's Chris It is a work-in-progress at Preston.

:03:11. > :03:19.They have hit the post and for me, they will probably finish that bit

:03:19. > :03:22.when eight minutes in, the impressive Danny mayor created a

:03:23. > :03:25.chance for Chris Robertson, and he gave the home side the lead. And

:03:25. > :03:35.from here Preston's confidence grew and grew and they looked anything

:03:35. > :03:40.

:03:40. > :03:44.and grew and they looked anything Whatever the manager said in the

:03:44. > :03:50.half-time talk seemed to have work. Let's see if they can capitalise on

:03:50. > :03:53.this will stop but from here, Preston's confidence grew and grew.

:03:53. > :04:03.And when they were forced to protect their lead, they were more

:04:03. > :04:06.

:04:06. > :04:11.0 up. They have put their bodies on the line for the manager. Can they

:04:11. > :04:15.hold out. They have been the better side in the second half by far. In

:04:15. > :04:17.the end a deserved win, and if the reaction of the manager and his

:04:17. > :04:27.players suggested unity, the appreciation from the supporters

:04:27. > :04:31.

:04:31. > :04:34.You're honest opinion, 18 games in, is it going the way you want it,

:04:34. > :04:41.has it gone slower than you expected or are you on track?

:04:41. > :04:47.you inherit a side that has lost nine in 11 compete at 1015, only

:04:47. > :04:53.picked up points... If you walk in the door and you think I'm going to

:04:53. > :04:56.wave a magic wand and it will work, E Waugh rainfall. We have found

:04:56. > :05:00.salt -- all sorts of problems, some have been documented and some

:05:00. > :05:06.haven't. We have tried to deal with issues and get ourselves together,

:05:06. > :05:10.and you can see where we are at. We have put in a solid display today.

:05:10. > :05:15.We are going forward, we are progressing, we are not at the

:05:15. > :05:19.level we want to be at, but we are stepping in the right direction.

:05:19. > :05:22.the end of the game, you could see that the team spirit was fantastic,

:05:22. > :05:27.they were all together on the pitch, hugging each other and

:05:27. > :05:31.congratulating each other, but it was a fantastic performance. I

:05:31. > :05:35.think the crowd were behind you today. I think this crowd is

:05:35. > :05:39.passionate about winning football. In my short time here, I have seen

:05:39. > :05:43.that if you're not doing those things, as a manager he will get it

:05:43. > :05:47.in the neck. You would not want to be at a club where there was no

:05:47. > :05:51.passion for victory. If you want to be at a club that has everything it

:05:51. > :05:55.takes to be successful, you have to take the bad times with the good.

:05:55. > :06:00.If you are someone who gets off on the good times and cannot take on

:06:00. > :06:04.the chin when you deserve it, you should not be at a club of this ilk.

:06:04. > :06:09.Big win for Preston North End. Short-term pain, long-term gain,

:06:09. > :06:14.fans cannot get over that, but is it necessary sometimes?

:06:15. > :06:24.expectation at Preston is high. They have a fantastic stadium and

:06:25. > :06:28.

:06:28. > :06:33.now they need the team. Over the past few years, Darren Ferguson, it

:06:33. > :06:37.has been a difficult place. When I was at Burnley before, we had some

:06:37. > :06:40.good battles and they had a good side. How difficult is it going

:06:40. > :06:45.into a dressing room like that? There are so many different

:06:45. > :06:50.personalities and there is no guarantee they will go with you.

:06:50. > :06:55.Graham Westley wanted to do things his way. He plays a certain style

:06:55. > :06:58.of football. You need the players to buy into that, sometimes they do

:06:58. > :07:05.and sometimes they don't. If they don't, you have to bring your own

:07:05. > :07:12.players in and it takes time. As I said earlier, the expectation level

:07:12. > :07:16.is great. Blackpool have done fantastically well. Preston have

:07:16. > :07:20.had to watch over the last few seasons. Keith, what is a light

:07:20. > :07:25.from the player's perspective when a new manager comes in? Not all of

:07:25. > :07:29.you will like each other. You have the trepidation of will they like

:07:29. > :07:33.me, will they not like me? Is like the first day of school when you're

:07:33. > :07:38.nervous and you do not know what to expect. You have to impress the

:07:38. > :07:48.manager. Briefly, when you walk in as a manager, did you feel

:07:48. > :07:49.

:07:49. > :07:52.stressed? Not really. You get used to wait after a while. You just do

:07:52. > :07:57.what you do, you going to the training ground, get the players on

:07:57. > :08:02.your side, show them what you want. Invariably they buy into it, but it

:08:02. > :08:07.takes time. The most difficult commodity in football to get as a

:08:07. > :08:11.manager is time. It is certainly all about the next season for

:08:11. > :08:13.Graham Westley. Now sometimes it feels as if you need a maths degree

:08:13. > :08:16.at this time of the season. Predicting promotion or relegation

:08:16. > :08:19.for your team can get ridiculous! For Rochdale on Saturday, they

:08:19. > :08:22.needed a win, along with losses elsewhere, to stave off the drop.

:08:22. > :08:25.Sarah Mulkerrins was at Spotland on Saturday to see where things stood

:08:25. > :08:28.for the club come five o'clock. New beginnings at Spotland in

:08:28. > :08:32.January. Struggling to find a successor to Keith Hill, Rochdale

:08:32. > :08:39.turned to John Coleman. A convincing win over rivals Bury,

:08:39. > :08:45.but since then, they've struggled but since then, they've struggled

:08:45. > :08:50.of relegation. Only a win against Exeter and losses for Leyton Orient

:08:50. > :08:58.and Walsall would keep them from the drop. Even the most loyal fans

:08:58. > :09:01.couldn't muster up some hope. Probably going to go back to lead

:09:01. > :09:06.to. We have had a two-year holiday in League One and it has been good.

:09:07. > :09:11.A we have had a couple of highways. I think everyone wants the season

:09:11. > :09:16.to end, draw a line under it, bury our heads for a bit and come back

:09:16. > :09:21.fighting. We have coped with worse before. I had been watching these

:09:21. > :09:25.for 60 odd years and that seemed worse than this! 5pm today, you are

:09:25. > :09:28.expecting? Two-to-one to Rochdale and relegated.

:09:28. > :09:30.Rochdale's relegation story was all going to script. Exeter settled

:09:30. > :09:35.early. Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro gave away a penalty, Daniel Nardiello

:09:35. > :09:38.slotted it home. A dominant first half from the visitors carried

:09:38. > :09:43.through to the second. Another goal for Exeter, Liam Sercombe the

:09:43. > :09:53.scorer this half. 11 minutes remaining and the drop for Dale was

:09:53. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:00.though, as he broke on the left and pegged one back. Two minutes later

:10:00. > :10:05.Joe Thompson levelled the game. Suddenly with nine minutes to go

:10:05. > :10:15.the fans started to believe. Take a bow Jason Kennedy, with three

:10:15. > :10:23.

:10:23. > :10:27.The sun was and still is shining today. It was a sensational

:10:27. > :10:33.comeback. It was this weekend two years ago that the club won

:10:33. > :10:39.promotion and they are not giving it up. It is not over till it's

:10:40. > :10:44.over. Whatever happens, we have given our all. We still will not

:10:44. > :10:48.stop trying to win the last two games, all last three if we can win

:10:48. > :10:52.next weekend. There has been a lot of strange things happening in

:10:52. > :10:55.football and people have been written off. Hopefully we can

:10:55. > :11:01.possibly prove a few people are wrong.

:11:01. > :11:07.We can't write Rochdale off. They are still fighting. The likelihood

:11:07. > :11:13.is they will go down, but if anyone can come back surely it is then?

:11:13. > :11:19.Certainly the level below based on now, it was a difficult situation

:11:19. > :11:22.to have gone, to have left Accrington. He has not lost that

:11:22. > :11:26.many matches since he has been there. He has drawn too many times

:11:26. > :11:33.when he could have had a win here and there. But it will be difficult

:11:33. > :11:42.for him. Yes. Since he has left, he has had 19 points out of 48. How do

:11:42. > :11:47.you approach it as a player, Keith? I think you look at the next game,

:11:47. > :11:52.take it from game to game. We have been down there all season,

:11:52. > :11:55.scrapping for their lives. These things take time and I think even

:11:55. > :12:00.if they do go down, he will get them fired up and they will come

:12:00. > :12:05.back even stronger. Thank you very much. Everyone here has got their

:12:05. > :12:08.fingers crossed the Rochdale. Sarah has been keeping across the

:12:08. > :12:11.rest of the League One action this weekend and starts her roundup with

:12:11. > :12:14.Oldham away to one of Rochdale's relegation rivals.

:12:14. > :12:22.Let's start with something to shout about for Oldham after five

:12:22. > :12:25.them ahead away to Wycombe but after the home side hit back it

:12:25. > :12:28.looked like being another of those days for Paul Dickov's side. Stuart

:12:28. > :12:33.Beavon equalised for the home side before Joel Grant gave them the

:12:33. > :12:36.lead with 12 minutes to go. It looked like it would be all over

:12:36. > :12:39.for The Latics when they conceded a penalty four minutes later but

:12:39. > :12:42.Grant Basey's miss proved to be just the tonic the visitors needed.

:12:42. > :12:47.Robbie Simpson went down under a challenge from Marvin McCoy and

:12:47. > :12:50.stepped up to equalise with just seconds of normal time remaining.

:12:50. > :12:55.After 13 games without a win it's now three wins in four games for

:12:55. > :13:00.improving Bury. Mike Grella displayed fine finishing to score

:13:00. > :13:03.the only goal against Bournemouth at Gigg Lane after just ten minutes.

:13:03. > :13:07.Just like they did after defeat against Bury, Tranmere bounced back

:13:07. > :13:10.from Monday's reverse at MK Dons with a good win. Andy Robinson

:13:10. > :13:20.picked himself up after being fouled to score a stylish winner at

:13:20. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:23.A look at the top half of the League One table shows Tranmere as

:13:23. > :13:26.our sole representatives. There's a little north west collective in the

:13:26. > :13:29.bottom half, though, with North End 14th, Bury 15th and Oldham 18th.

:13:29. > :13:35.Rochdale are still alive but needing the football version of

:13:35. > :13:39.Over the last 20 years TV money has become an absolutely fundamental

:13:39. > :13:42.source of income for Football clubs. But from next season a new TV deal

:13:42. > :13:45.comes in, which will be worth much less money for sides in the

:13:45. > :13:48.Championship and Leagues One and Two. There are concerns it could

:13:48. > :13:50.increase the financial gap between the Premier League and Football

:13:50. > :14:00.League, and mean some clubs facing a worrying shortfall in revenue.

:14:00. > :14:10.

:14:10. > :14:15.A new TV deal will have a significant impact on the football

:14:15. > :14:19.club in financial terms. It is tough out there. As long as you

:14:19. > :14:23.play within the rules, the chances are that the clubs will survive.

:14:24. > :14:27.The new deal that will see Sky TV monopolise Football League coverage

:14:27. > :14:31.while the BBC decides whether to continue to show its highlights

:14:31. > :14:36.programme. The deal is worth roughly 20 % less money than the

:14:36. > :14:41.previous one, meaning 65 billion divisible between 72 clubs, but the

:14:41. > :14:47.way it is divided is by no means equal three divisions.

:14:47. > :14:52.Around 80 % of the money goes to clubs in the championships, meaning

:14:52. > :14:58.every team will get to 0.1 million. In League One, while the money is

:14:58. > :15:05.less, with each one standing to get around 325,000. Meanwhile lead to

:15:05. > :15:09.will have just 8% of the overall TV money, which equates to 216,000

:15:09. > :15:12.for each club. It could be argued that the deal is

:15:12. > :15:17.highly favourable to championship sides, but Burnley considerate far

:15:17. > :15:22.from ideal. It also coincides with the reduction in their so-called

:15:22. > :15:27.parachute payments that followed Premier League relegation. It is a

:15:27. > :15:32.double whammy far ours. We are getting a less of a deal, but there

:15:32. > :15:37.are solidarity payments we are getting. With the new TV deal they

:15:37. > :15:46.did last time, it was 84 years solidarity payment instead of a

:15:46. > :15:56.two-year one. -- a four year payment. Obviously it puts a dent

:15:56. > :15:56.

:15:56. > :16:00.That implies the gap could increase and under their new deal, there

:16:00. > :16:04.could be a similar effect within the Football League hierarchy.

:16:04. > :16:07.is going deer at a further increase in the distance between

:16:08. > :16:12.Championship and League One clubs. We have to see that distance

:16:12. > :16:16.maintained as it is as a basic minimum and try and get everybody

:16:16. > :16:20.on a level playing field, otherwise we won't be able to complete.

:16:20. > :16:23.this stage, but dead in revenue for clubs is nothing like the

:16:23. > :16:27.catastrophe that followed ITV digital's collapsed 10 years ago.

:16:27. > :16:31.That led to TV rights money immediately fallen by 80% and

:16:31. > :16:36.became a major contributing factor in clubs like old and going into

:16:36. > :16:40.administration. The only good thing about the arrangement is that we

:16:40. > :16:46.have had 18 months to prepare for the reduction. That means that

:16:47. > :16:50.players who have been -- have been on short contracts and that is the

:16:50. > :16:54.way forward. There is also the question of hard clubs make up the

:16:54. > :16:57.deficit. Macclesfield are adamant their supporters will not get hit

:16:57. > :17:04.in the pockets though they face the problem of generating the income

:17:04. > :17:12.needed to keep the club afloat. Under the salary cap, though we are

:17:12. > :17:15.dear to lead to, if you are -- that we are. In league two Committee

:17:15. > :17:21.were only allowed to spend a percentage of your overhead on

:17:21. > :17:25.players. The irony is that televised football in general is

:17:25. > :17:30.damaging for a Football League clubs, especially unhelpful in that

:17:30. > :17:33.pubs can show live Premier League matches on foreign TV channels.

:17:33. > :17:38.That has a knock-on effect to ask guys, who kick off at 3 o'clock on

:17:38. > :17:42.a Saturday afternoon. If people can go into a local pub and watch their

:17:42. > :17:45.team, then that is going to be detrimental to clubs like ourselves.

:17:46. > :17:52.While clubs have been preparing for their changes in advance they have

:17:52. > :17:56.three seasons to live with them until the new deal runs its course.

:17:56. > :17:59.If you want to make your thoughts plane to everybody you can go to

:17:59. > :18:02.our Facebook page. Well if ever there was a crunch

:18:02. > :18:04.Cheshire derby, it took place at Macclesfield's Moss Rose on

:18:04. > :18:14.Saturday. The Silkmen, fighting for their Football League lives against

:18:14. > :18:21.

:18:21. > :18:24.a Crewe side pushing hard for the this one, It was the hosts who

:18:24. > :18:27.edged ahead after Ross Draper was fouled by Harry Davis in the box.

:18:28. > :18:31.Lewis Chalmers showed the necessary coolness to give his side a first

:18:31. > :18:34.half lead. But what you don't need when you're scrapping for your very

:18:34. > :18:36.Football League existence is to come up against Nick Powell. It was

:18:36. > :18:39.Crewe's coveted 18-year-old who turned the game around either side

:18:39. > :18:45.of half time, finishing crisply for the equaliser and dancing through

:18:45. > :18:48.the home defence to put his side ahead. But Macclesfield, rock

:18:48. > :18:52.bottom of League Two at kick-off, showed true spirit to earn a point

:18:52. > :18:55.with ten minutes to go. Former Alex striker Colin Daniel with a fine

:18:55. > :18:57.finish, to leave his side three points from safety with three to

:18:57. > :19:01.play. Accrington can most probably expect

:19:01. > :19:04.a summer rebuilding under Paul Cook, who won't have seen much to please

:19:04. > :19:07.him at Cheltenham. Marlon Pack's free kick beat Lee Nicholls at his

:19:07. > :19:10.near post to make it 3-0. Even though Bobby Grant scored a Stanley

:19:10. > :19:12.consolation with 14 minutes to go, The Robins restored their three

:19:12. > :19:22.goal lead when Nicholls spilled Summerfield's shot enabling Kaid

:19:22. > :19:32.Mohammed to score. No goals at The Globe Arena, but Morecambe will

:19:32. > :19:40.

:19:40. > :19:43.feel they had the edge over Port Vale. Their best chance fell to the

:19:43. > :19:44.head of Jack Redshaw, who might have done better from Isaac Reid's

:19:44. > :19:47.cross. Well the battle for that all-

:19:47. > :19:50.important seventh spot looks like going down to the wire in League

:19:50. > :19:53.Two. Goal difference is all that separates Oxford and Crewe, who

:19:53. > :19:56.play Cheltenham and Torquay in their next two games before ending

:19:56. > :19:59.the campaign at home to Aldershot. Oxford are at Plymouth, host

:19:59. > :20:05.Southend and visit Port Vale. Into the bottom half, it's looking like

:20:05. > :20:14.a battle between Hereford, Barnet Into the Championship now and more

:20:14. > :20:17.dropped home points for Burnley. Like so many times before this

:20:17. > :20:19.season, they took the lead against lowly Coventry at Turf Moor when

:20:20. > :20:22.Charlie Austin headed home a pinpoint cross from Ross Wallace.

:20:22. > :20:24.But they let the advantage slip after the break when ex-Rochdale

:20:25. > :20:27.striker Clive Platt nodded an equaliser past Lee Grant.

:20:27. > :20:30.They have dropped a lot of points at home this season, Burnley. You'd

:20:30. > :20:35.been there will be disappointed? is the first season for Eddie, so I
