:00:06. > :00:10.Preston North End tell us tonight that they have to save 750,000 per

:00:10. > :00:20.month. How does Chairman Peter Ridsdale plan to do that? Welcome

:00:20. > :00:30.

:00:30. > :00:36.Coming up on tonight's programme, the real state of play at Preston.

:00:36. > :00:39.Chairman Peter Ridsdale reveals the club's financial future.

:00:39. > :00:43.A Late Kick Off look at Gresty Road's next big thing. We scout

:00:43. > :00:51.striker Nick Powell. And argy bargy at Bury. The team

:00:51. > :00:54.mates who paid the penalty for this spot kick spat.

:00:54. > :00:57.With me in the studio tonight the man in charge at Prenton Park,

:00:57. > :01:04.Tranmere boss Les Parry and an Oldham Athletic legend who's been

:01:04. > :01:07.on a special Late Kick Off mission over the weekend, Andy Ritchie.

:01:07. > :01:10.First tonight, the chairman of Preston North End has told me today

:01:10. > :01:15.that his priority is to save 750,000 per month in an effort to

:01:15. > :01:18.get the club breaking even and on a firm financial footing. Peter

:01:18. > :01:20.Ridsdale has been in charge since December and tells me in an

:01:21. > :01:30.excluisve interview tonight his plan is big earners out, more fans

:01:31. > :01:31.

:01:31. > :01:35.in and the team on the up. When you came to Preston, how do

:01:35. > :01:41.they compare financially to some of your other clubs? I think the

:01:41. > :01:44.difference is, we have an owner here who has the wherewithal to

:01:44. > :01:47.make sure the fan base is stable but the similarity is that we were

:01:48. > :01:51.spending too much money for our position in the Football League. My

:01:51. > :01:58.challenge is to make sure we get value for money rather than just

:01:58. > :02:05.spending it. The money being spent, was that through mistakes or just

:02:05. > :02:08.the natural wear and tear of football? It is very easy to

:02:08. > :02:13.criticise predecessors and plenty of people still criticise me for

:02:13. > :02:15.things I have done but what we have here is an infrastructure for the

:02:15. > :02:18.championship and a football team that is currently playing in League

:02:18. > :02:23.One and we have to make sure that our overheads at the same as the

:02:23. > :02:32.lead in which we are performing at. We have got contract here that are

:02:32. > :02:35.probably OK but certainly were inappropriate in League One. He

:02:35. > :02:42.therefore what you either have to do is a bounce straight back if you

:02:42. > :02:46.can afford to do so or you have to cut your cloth and unfortunately we

:02:46. > :02:52.had not cut our cloth and we are not bouncing straight back into the

:02:52. > :02:57.championship. It is impossible to talk about finances without talking

:02:57. > :03:02.about the owner and he recently said it is costing him a 750,000 a

:03:02. > :03:08.month to run at the club, is that correct? If he said it, I will not

:03:08. > :03:13.dispute it. My view is that a football club of this stature with

:03:13. > :03:17.the sort of crowds we get should be able to break even. We cannot do

:03:17. > :03:23.that over night, we are clearly not breaking even now, that must be her

:03:23. > :03:28.challenge and the danger of that is our supporters saying, there is no

:03:28. > :03:33.ambition left. That is not true. We can't run our own football club yet

:03:33. > :03:41.still be ambitious and get promoted, that must be the object. How do you

:03:41. > :03:46.come in and say -- save that amount of money? We have got to get people

:03:46. > :03:51.to pay through the turnstiles or trim the squad down to a level that

:03:51. > :03:54.is acceptable and that we have players who are paid needed once

:03:54. > :03:58.salaries and again it doesn't happen overnight but you can make

:03:58. > :04:02.giant strides a fairly quickly. I would like to think if we start

:04:02. > :04:09.playing winning football, the crowds will come back. That helps

:04:09. > :04:12.enormously because that is a single best source of revenue. We will be

:04:12. > :04:16.willing and dealing with the players to make sure our overheads

:04:16. > :04:19.are just as well. I'm not pretending the magic wand and make

:04:19. > :04:26.it happen overnight but that has got to be a challenge. If we could

:04:26. > :04:31.get promoted, we were suddenly get a significant amount of money, 4

:04:31. > :04:33.million coming from the television revenues just by being promoted. We

:04:33. > :04:37.are going to challenge all the routes that are available,

:04:37. > :04:44.promotion is probably the hardest challenge but we need to get there

:04:44. > :04:47.sooner rather than later. investment is up to 20 million and

:04:47. > :04:54.the owner has said it is not unreasonable to want some of that

:04:54. > :04:57.back. Has he talked to you about that, the return on his investment?

:04:57. > :05:04.Clearly, I am not going to make a public statement about private

:05:04. > :05:09.conversations between him and myself. It is clear that he has

:05:09. > :05:14.been a very successful benefactor for this club but without him, we

:05:14. > :05:19.would not have survived. Am grateful for that and we all should

:05:19. > :05:23.be. My object is to get this club into a situation where it has value,

:05:23. > :05:27.it is not losing money every year and will succeed on the pitch. That

:05:27. > :05:32.is an interesting challenge, one I have faced in the past, one I have

:05:32. > :05:42.faced in the past and one I am looking forward to. Is it a

:05:42. > :05:45.sustainable model? Think of Blackburn Rovers, is it sustainable

:05:45. > :05:51.going for it having one man to gain so much on her shoulders or are you

:05:51. > :05:56.acting and the King for other people to help? And that the person

:05:56. > :06:01.to address the question to because I don't know -- own at the football

:06:01. > :06:05.club. You should address to him. There are plenty of clubs out there

:06:05. > :06:10.with single benefactors. Amateur in the long term but that is the best

:06:10. > :06:14.solution for those clubs. If you look at Manchester City, Chelsea,

:06:14. > :06:18.what happens to them that that benefactor dies he doesn't want to

:06:18. > :06:23.write cheques any more? My objective is clear, too much at

:06:23. > :06:28.this football club operates within the correct financial model, one

:06:28. > :06:31.that is totally achievable. We had a good supporter base and there is

:06:31. > :06:39.no reason why Preston North End football club cannot operate on a

:06:39. > :06:43.financial viable model. If you do not get promotion and you cannot

:06:43. > :06:49.offload a high earners and you are still losing seven had and 50,000

:06:49. > :06:55.a month, is the owner prepared to finance that? You have just thrown

:06:55. > :07:00.a number of negatives at me. They are scenarios. If you said we

:07:00. > :07:04.cannot get the higher earners of the pay roll, and number of our

:07:04. > :07:13.players are out of contract this coming summer. Do I expect to get

:07:13. > :07:19.promoted this year? I am not at her event. -- a clairvoyant. I want to

:07:19. > :07:23.get the correct balance as soon as possible. I am aware of Mr

:07:23. > :07:27.Hemmings's ability to fund it in the meantime but I have a challenge

:07:27. > :07:33.here which I am fully aware of, I am very happy and grateful to be

:07:33. > :07:40.here because I enjoying it very much.

:07:40. > :07:45.He has a job on his hands. Did that sound familiar to you in League One

:07:45. > :07:49.trying to pay Peter and Paul at the same time? Yes, you knock a few

:07:49. > :07:54.zeroes off our amount but the model that he is talking about his ass

:07:54. > :08:00.really. We made a small profit and nothing we will this year. Most

:08:00. > :08:07.clubs will have to go that way now because you cannot just go pulling

:08:07. > :08:11.money, throwing good money after bad. On one hand they have a severe

:08:11. > :08:16.with Trevor Hemmings but it all rests with him. He wants the money

:08:16. > :08:20.back. I am sure he does. That is a lot of money to have pumped into

:08:20. > :08:24.one football club. There is a difficult one because as Peter said,

:08:24. > :08:30.if he did decide to pull the plug, what happens to the football club?

:08:30. > :08:34.They have got to get a more suitable plant in a place and it is

:08:34. > :08:38.not great to be easy because getting higher wage earners off,

:08:38. > :08:43.that is not just a thing you can do and say, that is it, we've got them

:08:43. > :08:50.out of the building. It will be hard. Interesting comments about

:08:50. > :08:56.the model, and naming Bolton and Manchester City, what happens if

:08:56. > :09:01.someone at stops writing the cheques. If you are a fan, and

:09:02. > :09:07.someone comes in with a big cheque book, do you rejoice? Yes, because

:09:07. > :09:14.you do not think long-term in those circumstances. You think, we can

:09:15. > :09:21.have more players. Then you worry about them pulling out when they do.

:09:21. > :09:29.But the ones like Manchester City, they have gone, haven't they?

:09:29. > :09:39.would be spend, spend, spend? would, yes, but I wouldn't be there.

:09:39. > :09:39.

:09:39. > :09:43.It was a disappointing weekend on the pitch for Preston.

:09:43. > :09:47.While he was appointed last week, this game at home to Leyton Orient

:09:47. > :09:50.really marked the start of the Graham Westley era at Deepdale. But

:09:50. > :09:56.his first game in charge didn't go as planned despite new recruits

:09:56. > :09:59.Holroyd, McAllister and Procter all picked from the start. But it was a

:09:59. > :10:02.disjointed North End for the most part, something exploited after the

:10:02. > :10:07.break by the Londoners whose goals came from Marc Laird and Jimmy

:10:07. > :10:12.Smith. Stephen Schumacher was handily placed to put Bury in front

:10:12. > :10:15.at home to Yeovil but that was only the start of his eventful afternoon.

:10:15. > :10:17.Joe Skarz's header put The Shakers back in front after Yeovil's

:10:17. > :10:22.immediate reply but the main talking point came ten minutes

:10:22. > :10:25.before the break. After being brought down in the box, Giles Coke

:10:25. > :10:27.fancied the resulting spot kick despite Schumacher being the

:10:27. > :10:37.regular penalty taker leading to amazing scenes described by boss

:10:37. > :10:41.

:10:41. > :10:45.Richie Barker to BBC Radio Manchester's Bill Rice. I have

:10:45. > :10:53.given him the responsibility to take penalties and as far as I'm

:10:54. > :10:57.concerned, he knows that and it goes beyond that, whatever Stephen

:10:57. > :11:00.says, goes. Schumacher eventually converted, Bury held on for a 3-2

:11:00. > :11:03.win. It ended goalless at Breezy Boundary Park but Oldham will know

:11:03. > :11:07.they missed good chances against Exeter, none better than this late

:11:07. > :11:09.Matt Smith header. Finally Dale who really needed something from this

:11:09. > :11:15.relegation six pointer but they were second best throughout and

:11:15. > :11:25.it's now nine without a win. Two from Stuart Beavon helped Wycombe

:11:25. > :11:30.

:11:30. > :11:35.I cannot think I have seen an argument go on as long as that.

:11:35. > :11:39.Giles has apologised and has said that his emotions run high when he

:11:39. > :11:45.is playing. He said all he could think about was getting the ball

:11:45. > :11:48.are on the spot. No apology for wanting to win. He has said he

:11:48. > :11:58.needs to respect the captain and manager even when emotions are

:11:58. > :12:01.

:12:01. > :12:06.running high. He liked it. I thought it was class. You used to

:12:06. > :12:14.be a penalty taker. Did anyone try to make the ball off a you?

:12:14. > :12:23.cannot remember that. I think he is are mown and should be thinking of

:12:23. > :12:32.the captain as the penalty taker. - - on loan. Anyway, they scored,

:12:32. > :12:41.that was the main thing. Let's have a look at your luck -- game at the

:12:41. > :12:44.weekend, Bournemouth. You took the lead thanks to a tidy finish. That

:12:44. > :12:52.lead thanks to a tidy finish. That is a quality goal, unlike the other

:12:52. > :13:02.two. Described it. You can see, look where it goes, it has gone

:13:02. > :13:03.

:13:03. > :13:11.right in the stand. There is no stopping it. It is going to keep

:13:11. > :13:21.right, right into the top corner. Was that a wind assisted? I think

:13:21. > :13:28.the wind was actually against it! We have to mention it, what is

:13:28. > :13:33.happening? We are playing well, to be quite honest. We are losing by

:13:33. > :13:41.one goal all of the time. That is the difference in this league. It

:13:41. > :13:48.is about a class, about a look. Once we get back on our way we will

:13:48. > :13:55.be all right. How frustrating is it? It was tough all the way and

:13:55. > :14:02.the play-offs were in sight. How frustrating is it for you now?

:14:02. > :14:06.time that it really hits is when you get injuries in the squad. We

:14:06. > :14:10.had four playing at the start of the season. That is a problem we

:14:10. > :14:15.have got at the moment. You started the season saying that you wanted

:14:15. > :14:21.it to be more than a fight for survival. Do you think that is

:14:21. > :14:29.still the way forward? Very much so. We were in the bottom four and now

:14:29. > :14:35.I think we are second. There is no reason we cannot get there. We have

:14:35. > :14:41.already featured Preston North End. It is a massive club, isn't it?

:14:41. > :14:44.think they have got the top five place. I think any of the five

:14:45. > :14:48.going up will do well in the going up will do well in the

:14:48. > :14:56.championship. We wish you well. Let's have a look at League One,

:14:56. > :15:01.where there is some developing India's. -- some developing news.

:15:01. > :15:07.Bridestowe remain deep in relegation trouble. -- Rochdale.

:15:07. > :15:17.They have agreed personal terms with John Coleman to replace Steve

:15:17. > :15:22.air as manager. There have been no teams -- terms agreed yet. I am for

:15:22. > :15:30.Rochdale. They have got a top manager. He is the third longest

:15:30. > :15:34.serving manager. I wonder what has swung it for him. I think it is a

:15:34. > :15:40.North West club. He does not have to move. He is probably seeing

:15:40. > :15:46.potential. He wants to go in there with Jimmy and get them out of the

:15:46. > :15:51.bottom. Where does this leave Accrington Stanley? It is going to

:15:51. > :15:57.be strange. Stanley without Coleman, they go together, they are

:15:57. > :16:03.synonymous with each other. They will not want to be wasting any

:16:04. > :16:11.time. They might have somebody in mind, I do not know. It might be

:16:11. > :16:14.strange. It will be strange for me not to interview John Coleman. But

:16:14. > :16:19.they will still have him in the region, which is good.

:16:19. > :16:24.There is not too much action this week. Preston will get an

:16:24. > :16:31.opportunity to make up against their last game. They will play

:16:31. > :16:34.Notts County. Macclesfield will play AFC Wimbledon. You can keep up

:16:34. > :16:40.to date on your local BBC radio stations. We will keep you updated

:16:40. > :16:47.with all of the latest John Coleman and Rochdale news. And now to the

:16:47. > :16:57.quiz that has got the ball talking. Peter Murphy was the only player

:16:57. > :16:58.

:16:58. > :17:05.sent off at the Bristol Rovers. What the mango buzzer, he swapped

:17:05. > :17:10.shirts after a game with the Real Madrid. We also have a North West

:17:10. > :17:20.favoured, Gordon Burns. Who scored the winning goal in last

:17:20. > :17:20.

:17:20. > :17:29.season's FA Cup final? What is the capital city of Wales? Cardiff.

:17:29. > :17:39.What is the leader of the Liberal Democrats? Ed Miliband. No, it is

:17:39. > :17:43.

:17:43. > :17:48.Nick Clegg. What is twenty-five minus seven? 18. Which North West

:17:48. > :17:58.side plays at the Reebok Stadium? Bolton. How many times has Brazil

:17:58. > :18:00.

:18:00. > :18:10.won the World Cup? Name a former Accrington Stanley manager? Do not

:18:10. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:23.say the current one. How many sides does a train will have? 3. -- a

:18:23. > :18:25.

:18:25. > :18:30.triangle. Yes! That was a little bit closer than the quiz last year.

:18:30. > :18:40.That was Stanley at play. But how did they get on at the weekend?

:18:40. > :18:43.

:18:43. > :18:46.point but now they had opportunities to win it at

:18:46. > :18:53.Aldershot. Michael Smith should have hit the target with this

:18:53. > :18:58.header. The toe-poke and near-post follow up was saved as this one

:18:58. > :19:02.ended in stalemate. Boss Gary Simpson bemoaned the windy

:19:02. > :19:08.conditions at Swindon. His side might have taken the lead had Matt

:19:08. > :19:12.Hamshaw not been off balance. They had to pay when Benson scored. The

:19:12. > :19:20.sending off was controversial but the home side wasted the resulting

:19:20. > :19:30.spot-kick. Three without a win for more come after 82 - 1 defeat to

:19:30. > :19:31.

:19:31. > :19:36.Turkey. -- after a 2 - 1 defeat to Torquay. The Shrimps were

:19:36. > :19:45.galvanised after a sweet strike from a Phil Jevons. Then a claim

:19:45. > :19:49.was dismissed for this bizarre bit But has to be one of the most

:19:49. > :19:55.ridiculous decisions that I have ever seen at a football game. --

:19:55. > :20:00.that has to be. Nick Powell has attracted scouts from Manchester

:20:00. > :20:05.United and Aston Villa after making a scouting -- starting line-up.

:20:05. > :20:11.This is a good time to send our reporters down to see what all of

:20:11. > :20:15.the fuss is about. Crewe is a small club with a

:20:15. > :20:23.reputation for finding big names. This year it is a Nick Powell.

:20:23. > :20:28.is not the same as anyone we have ever had before. He has always been

:20:28. > :20:33.independent with his thinking. It is not about tricks. It is about

:20:33. > :20:40.either scoring goals or stopping goals. He does all of those. He is

:20:40. > :20:47.doing all of them very well and he is a good player. He has got a bit

:20:47. > :20:53.of everything. He can stop goals and he makes goals. For somebody

:20:53. > :20:59.that young, he is destined for the top, no doubt about it. When he is

:20:59. > :21:03.not short of confidence, he is well aware that football stardom may not

:21:03. > :21:08.come to him this season. Last year I was not even on the team, I was

:21:08. > :21:16.on the bench. They didn't -- that did not help me keep my fitness a

:21:16. > :21:23.poor show what I can do. I think I have shown that I have progressed.

:21:23. > :21:27.-- Life fitness up or show what I can do. He is the best player Crewe

:21:27. > :21:32.have got at the moment and I hope they keep him. I think he might go

:21:32. > :21:39.at the season. If he goes to the Premiership club he will be setting

:21:39. > :21:43.on the bench at best. -- sitting on the bench. Here he is getting a

:21:43. > :21:50.regular experience in the league and good luck to him. I hope he

:21:50. > :21:55.stays. We are looking at Nick Powell. How do you assess a guy of

:21:55. > :21:59.his age and what will make him a great player? You have to look at a

:21:59. > :22:05.lot of things. You have to look at his temperament. You have to look

:22:05. > :22:10.at his ability, is he a team player? Is he fearless? I think

:22:10. > :22:17.that is one thing that people will look at. I think they take all of

:22:17. > :22:22.those things into consideration. has got to earn the right to play.

:22:22. > :22:26.He has been left out in periods of times when he got sent out at

:22:26. > :22:30.Shrewsbury. He was very petulant and he missed a lot of games after

:22:30. > :22:38.that. It was not a lesson but it was something he needed to land and

:22:38. > :22:48.he has made on from it. He is showing a majority. -- he needed to

:22:48. > :22:50.

:22:50. > :22:57.learn and he has learned from it. Dagenham and Redbridge did not

:22:57. > :23:02.listen. It was up to Greg Pearce sent to even things up on his debut.

:23:02. > :23:12.The nightmare than in the second half for visitors keeper Chris

:23:12. > :23:22.Lewinton. He failed to clear a back-pass. They continued to push

:23:22. > :23:25.

:23:25. > :23:31.on. Nick Powell stepped up into the limelight and completed the rout.

:23:32. > :23:38.Once we got the third goal, I felt comfortable after that. Make, just

:23:38. > :23:44.as they were announcing man of the match, I was more than pleased for

:23:44. > :23:54.him. I am pleased with him. A nice little cameo at the end, Bryony
