:00:02. > :00:05.With their chairman stepping down, could Burnley be the next North

:00:05. > :00:15.West club to be taken over by foreign owners? Welcome to Late

:00:15. > :00:28.

:00:28. > :00:34.Also tonight. Been there only interview together, burly chairman

:00:34. > :00:39.Barry Kilby and his wife talk about his cancer, the club and the kind

:00:39. > :00:45.of successor he does not want. A touch of frost at Tranmere - the

:00:45. > :00:53.story of the dreaded pitch inspection. Holding back the years,

:00:53. > :00:56.reuniting to likely lads on the Isle of Man. Also... Just what was

:00:56. > :01:02.the answer that had the Morecambe team in stitches? Stay tuned for

:01:02. > :01:05.another cracking One On One. With us in the studio tonight, the

:01:05. > :01:08.Chairman of Macclesfield Town, Mike Rance, and the man in charge of our

:01:08. > :01:14.top performing League One team, Bury boss Richie Barker. Welcome,

:01:14. > :01:17.gentlemen. More in a moment. First, he's been at the helm of his

:01:17. > :01:19.hometown club for 13 years, guided them through financial peril and

:01:19. > :01:28.eventually into the Premier League. But last week, Burnley chairman

:01:28. > :01:34.Barry Kilby announced he was stepping down for health reasons.

:01:34. > :01:38.Barry and his wife enjoyed -- agreed to one interview after the

:01:38. > :01:44.state he will leave the club then and his concerns. That interview

:01:44. > :01:49.was for Late Kick Off. I started by asking Sonia about his cancer.

:01:50. > :01:54.is a dreadful patient. We do not do sickness. As Alastair Campbell said.

:01:54. > :02:01.We do not like being treated any differently so life goes on

:02:01. > :02:06.normally. Did it cross your mind to try and battle on while fighting?

:02:06. > :02:11.Yes, because it is a massive wrench after being somewhere for 30 years

:02:12. > :02:18.and being chairman. But looking at this dinner cold light of day, it

:02:18. > :02:28.is the right decision. You are staying on as a director. How

:02:28. > :02:33.important is that? I want to keep my connection, and I can do. Yes, I

:02:33. > :02:37.will not walk away. How do you feel about that, Sonia? There are family

:02:37. > :02:42.barriers and professional barriers, is there a danger he would just be

:02:42. > :02:46.as attentive with the club has ever? That will not change but we

:02:46. > :02:53.have always done this as a family, we have been to all of the matches

:02:53. > :02:58.as a unit and my sons, as often as possible and the other kids. People

:02:58. > :03:02.know that I am tears to protective but this is his absolute love and

:03:02. > :03:07.it has been a tough 13 years, long at times, but we have thoroughly

:03:07. > :03:11.enjoyed it. There have been remarkable stories and some

:03:11. > :03:18.headlines about television and messages from the fans. What do you

:03:18. > :03:26.both make of that? I have been overwhelmed, it has been touching

:03:26. > :03:31.so many people, they have got in touch, people from back over those

:03:32. > :03:37.13 years and also the Burnley fans, which has been overwhelming. It is

:03:38. > :03:42.quite humbling, really. I have been very moved. We had a few tears this

:03:42. > :03:45.week because the message boards have been tremendous and people

:03:45. > :03:53.within that football fraternity have been amazing, people who have

:03:54. > :04:02.moved on, it has been a very emotional. Or on the day you step

:04:02. > :04:08.down, where is the club financially? We aren't decent shape.

:04:08. > :04:13.We are negotiating and we have the parachute money that will run out

:04:13. > :04:19.and you have to think of the contracts and as to what you will

:04:19. > :04:25.do but we are in good shape, we'll have no external debt and we have

:04:25. > :04:32.good directors. They can support the club. And you're a successor?

:04:32. > :04:37.We don't want names, but what kind of qualities does he have to have

:04:37. > :04:44.and where might you come from? Someone in the wings? We need

:04:44. > :04:48.somebody to buy shares to do that. The current board, the five of us,

:04:48. > :04:54.four other directors and what happens in practice is the

:04:54. > :04:58.directors of the company elect the chairman. There will be five of us

:04:58. > :05:02.at the end of me and I would think the chairman will emerge from the

:05:03. > :05:08.other four directors that are already here. Someone from outside,

:05:08. > :05:15.they would have to be a shareholder of a certain size and come from the

:05:15. > :05:21.outside. Outside is an interesting word. Outside, elsewhere, has led

:05:21. > :05:26.to problems but they are not fans of Burnley. The big chains that I

:05:26. > :05:35.have seen have been in 13 years is the influx of foreign owners. Only

:05:36. > :05:41.eight teams in the Championship who do not have English honours. People

:05:41. > :05:47.coming from the outside, totally alien to the place, that has been

:05:47. > :05:53.the big change. And that has happened in football. I don't think

:05:53. > :05:57.there many Russians are Arabs, to Burnley! If someone came sniffing

:05:57. > :06:02.from Russia or the Middle East, would you use your shares to

:06:03. > :06:08.caution against that? You only have to look at clubs where people have

:06:08. > :06:12.had to look at buying back and things going wrong and it's easy to

:06:13. > :06:22.walk away and leave a big mess. If that did happen, we would be really

:06:22. > :06:26.careful. But it is up to the shareholders. We have over 2000

:06:26. > :06:33.shareholders. It is a real community club. Has been chairman

:06:33. > :06:39.in hamster lives or has it been a trial? I would not swap this for

:06:39. > :06:42.anything. The emotional roller- coaster, you deal with that, it

:06:42. > :06:48.becomes like an addictive drug because it is in your blood and it

:06:48. > :06:53.does dominate your life. I cannot think of anything better, I was 49

:06:53. > :07:00.became here. I had sold my business and I really cannot think of

:07:00. > :07:06.anything better to carry on her life with. 13 years coming to an

:07:06. > :07:13.end, what has been the high point? Promotions, Cup finals, they're

:07:13. > :07:17.easy, but for me, stepping down, it is the knowledge that Burnley is a

:07:17. > :07:23.championship team now. We are gripped with bigger provincial

:07:23. > :07:28.cities. We are natural bedfellows, rather than the lower leagues which

:07:28. > :07:32.he seems to be destined for forever. It isn't spectacular but that is

:07:32. > :07:39.the high. Everybody at Late Kick Off which is Barry very well for

:07:39. > :07:45.the future. Is the role of the chairman undervalued in football?

:07:45. > :07:50.It isn't necessarily undervalued but understood -- misunderstood.

:07:50. > :07:54.You have to make difficult decisions and like Barry, if you

:07:54. > :08:01.have a passion for the club, sometimes those decisions don't

:08:01. > :08:05.seem to add up for supporters. supporters' have no idea what it is

:08:05. > :08:11.like to be chairman. Those sleepless nights, worrying about

:08:11. > :08:16.finances and the performance. is right. It is difficult to get

:08:16. > :08:20.that message across to people, that ultimately, it has to be a business

:08:20. > :08:27.to an extent, if not more than a business. You have to make sure

:08:27. > :08:34.that the numbers add up each week. And that sometimes is a challenge.

:08:34. > :08:39.Why do you do it? My wife asks me that all the time! I love it. I

:08:39. > :08:43.love the game, I have a real passion. It is one way we you can

:08:43. > :08:48.make a difference to the local community. Briefly, what about the

:08:48. > :08:52.players? I they aware of what happens at the board level? Does it

:08:52. > :08:57.matter or will they just carry on? I do not think they are aware of it

:08:57. > :09:02.but when something like this comes out, it will hit the players hard

:09:02. > :09:05.but when I moved into management, you attend board meetings and meet

:09:05. > :09:10.the chairman and you realise how much work goes in. The thank you

:09:10. > :09:12.both very much. The Kilbys were on the south coast at the weekend for

:09:12. > :09:19.Burnley's match with Southampton. But Sarah Mulkerrins starts her

:09:19. > :09:23.Championship roundup on the Fylde coast with Blackpool. Unbeaten in

:09:23. > :09:26.2012 and placed in 4th in the table, Blackpool were looking to continue

:09:26. > :09:33.this promotion clash against Portsmouth on Saturday. Just before

:09:33. > :09:39.the break, the form book was upset to put the visitors ahead.

:09:39. > :09:45.Blackpool persevered with a late challenge against Stephen Crainey.

:09:45. > :09:49.The shot curled and beautifully to give Blackpool the home draw.

:09:49. > :09:54.Burney travelled to Southampton for the second best away form and the

:09:54. > :09:58.Championship but that form eluded them on Saturday. Eight minutes

:09:58. > :10:03.afterwards, this cross from Southampton soon found Adam Lallana

:10:03. > :10:10.and he headed the Somme. Then something the Clarets will want to

:10:10. > :10:13.forget. This scrappy goal credited to Billy Sharp. Not a great day out

:10:14. > :10:16.on the south coast for any high's Burnley. A disappointing weekend

:10:17. > :10:20.for our Championship teams, then. Let's see how it has affected their

:10:20. > :10:26.promotion chances. Blackpool remain in the playoff places but Burnley

:10:26. > :10:28.have lost ground on the top six and are now five points off the pace.

:10:28. > :10:31.Without a win in 13, Tranmere Rovers were desperate for

:10:31. > :10:35.Saturday's game against Preston to go ahead. But even though they had

:10:35. > :10:37.the covers on at Prenton Park since last Tuesday, the game was still in

:10:37. > :10:40.doubt on Saturday morning because of last week's freezing weather.

:10:40. > :10:45.Andy Johnson was there as the referee made the decision as to

:10:45. > :10:53.whether the game could go ahead. Prenton Park, Saturday morning. No

:10:53. > :10:58.visible sign of frost but parts of the pitch are causing concern.

:10:58. > :11:02.have got to areas on the touchlines and it is strange because on one

:11:02. > :11:08.step it is soft on born on the next it is very hard so we have decided

:11:08. > :11:14.to have another look at 11 am. We will save there is any improvement

:11:14. > :11:20.and if so, we might get the game on. Said and put it, it is a waiting

:11:21. > :11:27.game? That was the one decision we did not want to have to make. We

:11:27. > :11:34.wanted yes or no. That is the way it is, I can see why he has done

:11:34. > :11:38.this. He desperately want the game to go ahead? The boys are excited,

:11:38. > :11:43.they want to come back from that disappointing result last week.

:11:43. > :11:49.They have been really up for this all week. An hour later and it's

:11:49. > :11:58.decision time. It last week at Scunthorpe the entire pitch was

:11:58. > :12:06.frozen. This area, that seems to be getting better. No difference here.

:12:06. > :12:10.No change. With that element of doubt, we might play safe and the

:12:10. > :12:17.sensible decision is to call this off. OK? Preston were due to travel

:12:17. > :12:22.at 11.30am half so calls have to be made. Disappointment all round. We

:12:22. > :12:27.have worked hard all week. We had the covers on since Monday.

:12:27. > :12:34.Temperatures at midweek have beaten us. Down to around minus five

:12:34. > :12:37.degrees. The frost covers only work to around minus four degrees. We

:12:37. > :12:43.had the slight increase in temperature during the week. What

:12:43. > :12:49.this has beaten us in the end. We would need another three degrees.

:12:49. > :12:52.Key 80% of the pitch is playable but those two frozen parts near the

:12:52. > :12:57.touchline mean the game has to be called off and it isn't just

:12:57. > :13:02.frustrating for players, managers and fans what it's about money.

:13:02. > :13:07.This costs clubs like Tran mere delay. We it is costly, as well as

:13:07. > :13:14.financially, it is frustrating. Because of the weather, we always

:13:14. > :13:18.anticipate that this could be the case. It was one of those cases

:13:18. > :13:25.where on the catering side, that is a big loss, we spoke to the chef

:13:25. > :13:29.and said, we will look at menus that we can possibly key next week.

:13:29. > :13:34.On that side, we have done well. The programme is always difficult

:13:34. > :13:39.so we had to go to print. We will look to rearrange this within the

:13:39. > :13:49.next couple of weeks. More from Les on the pressures on him a moment

:13:49. > :13:52.

:13:52. > :13:54.but you must be able to identify It is a real problem. The earlier

:13:54. > :14:00.you call it the better it is because you can plan things behind

:14:00. > :14:03.the scenes. If it is a late call it is very different -- difficult.

:14:03. > :14:10.do you cope preparing your team if you know it it will probably be

:14:10. > :14:13.off? He would rather say there is no chance, then you can organise

:14:14. > :14:18.training, the players know when they will be in or off. But when it

:14:18. > :14:23.gets back late you have prepared on a Friday for the game to go ahead,

:14:23. > :14:27.when the game is off, where you go from there? Q What already prepared

:14:27. > :14:32.to, it is a fairly easy day, and then you have had three or four

:14:32. > :14:38.days off. Preparations generally are going well. Your season is

:14:38. > :14:48.swimming along. It was up until the frost came along. To be sitting

:14:48. > :14:56.

:14:56. > :15:06.The start of the season, just come up, if I had said February, it you

:15:06. > :15:10.

:15:10. > :15:15.To be sitting 10th or 11th now, above some of the teams we are

:15:16. > :15:19.above, way beyond what we expected. What has happened this season? Have

:15:19. > :15:23.the players come up a stage and realise they can hold their own?

:15:23. > :15:28.That took a while to stop most of our -- most of our players hadn't

:15:28. > :15:32.played in League One for a while. It was a matter of convincing them

:15:32. > :15:38.they were good enough to play at that level. Obviously we have lost

:15:38. > :15:41.four, sold four, but he was a matter through September where we

:15:41. > :15:45.had a difficult time but it was about that self-belief, working and

:15:45. > :15:49.letting them believe they could succeed. Losing Ryan Lowe must have

:15:49. > :15:53.been a challenge. When we told him he had scored seven in seven. The

:15:54. > :15:58.top scorer in the whole of the Football League. For a club of

:15:58. > :16:07.outside to lose a player like that was a big blow. Bash away size. He

:16:07. > :16:11.took some replacing. Andy bishop stepped up. You have hinted at the

:16:11. > :16:17.expectation, people will be saying why can't we do the play-offs?

:16:17. > :16:23.have had some letters where play- offs are not only hope for, they

:16:23. > :16:29.are expected. A good place to be. Fantastic. We would rather be where

:16:29. > :16:32.we are than sitting third, 4th, 5th from bottom but we have got to get

:16:32. > :16:39.from 50 points. If we get there from end -- from then onwards we

:16:39. > :16:44.will see where we are. Bottom club at home coming up? It might not

:16:44. > :16:50.mean anything. With the pressing game off Les Parry missed the

:16:50. > :16:59.chance to improve on Tranmere's run. Andy Johnson asked him if he was

:16:59. > :17:04.feeling the heat. I suppose I am. No good kidding you are not. You

:17:04. > :17:08.start worrying about games a little bit more then you would do, killing

:17:08. > :17:15.of your tracks a little bit more than you did do before. -- going

:17:15. > :17:23.over. I don't feel pressure for my job. But when I go, which they will

:17:23. > :17:26.go, whether tomorrow or three years, we don't know, I will shrug my

:17:26. > :17:32.shoulders and say thank you very much, I have done my best. I don't

:17:32. > :17:37.think anybody could have done any better. That will be it. At the

:17:37. > :17:43.moment it is not a worry about my own position. It is a worry about

:17:44. > :17:48.the club. I hold it dear to my heart. The margins for success and

:17:48. > :17:52.failure are so small. 12 points away from the play-off places,

:17:52. > :17:59.seven from the drop zone. A few results either way make a big

:17:59. > :18:03.difference. Yes. And within those games it is a thin line. Last week

:18:04. > :18:10.we thought we had equalised in the 92nd minute, the linesman decided

:18:10. > :18:17.to give it offside. We showed it to the lads on Monday. Half the squad

:18:17. > :18:20.said yes, half said it wasn't. That is how close it was. We are on the

:18:20. > :18:29.back of 52-One defeats on the posts away from home and the last three

:18:29. > :18:33.we have been leading -- 5, 2-1 defeat. Tran where are away to

:18:33. > :18:38.Carlisle tomorrow night. -- Tranmere. The only other game to

:18:38. > :18:43.get -- team to get a game at the weekend was more come. They were

:18:43. > :18:48.inches from taking the lead when Phil Jevons lifted the ball past

:18:48. > :18:55.the home keeper. Rovers went ahead in the second half. Lee Brown with

:18:55. > :19:00.a final touch. They doubled their lead from the spot after Danny

:19:00. > :19:07.Carlton. The Shrimps got back into the game three minutes from time.

:19:07. > :19:17.The substitute Neil Eid and a point at the death but this was Sue Brian

:19:17. > :19:25.

:19:25. > :19:29.On to Macclesfield, not a very healthy lead position, what is the

:19:29. > :19:34.mood like? I think it is still positive. We

:19:34. > :19:39.have a great cup run. That has got in a way of our league performances.

:19:39. > :19:42.We have had a really seriously rash of injuries but we are playing

:19:42. > :19:47.Morgan tomorrow, fingers crossed. was going to talk about the

:19:47. > :19:52.injuries, perhaps the weather has come to your aid, given them the

:19:52. > :19:55.chance to recover. The ones that are fit, difficult to train in

:19:55. > :20:01.these conditions so you lose a bit as well.

:20:01. > :20:06.You mentioned your cup run, but the league run, what do you say as

:20:06. > :20:15.chairman to Gary Simpson? How do you operate? We talk a lot. There

:20:15. > :20:21.is never a day I don't talk to him. You are not tempted to pick his

:20:21. > :20:24.team for him? I do but he ignores me. He knows we have got to get the

:20:24. > :20:29.show back on the road and get some points on the board, hope filly

:20:29. > :20:34.tomorrow night. We alluded to it earlier round, at the stresses of

:20:34. > :20:40.being a chairman. What is the strain of running a club like

:20:40. > :20:45.Macclesfield? Substantial in many ways. Particularly if you're

:20:45. > :20:48.drifting downwards. Great to be in the top half and looking upwards.

:20:48. > :20:53.We were there not long before Christmas and that makes things

:20:53. > :21:01.easier. I wouldn't relish another relegation battle and neither would

:21:01. > :21:06.Gary. Used to play for Macclesfield. Have they got the ability to haul

:21:06. > :21:10.themselves up the table? They have got some young players, obviously

:21:10. > :21:14.the size of the club they have had a good record recently of bringing

:21:14. > :21:18.young players through and moving them on. I don't think there is

:21:18. > :21:21.anything in it. Obviously bigger clubs in League Two now. Outside

:21:21. > :21:27.the top three or four they have got a real chance of getting Bacup

:21:27. > :21:32.there. I must ask you about the new ground.

:21:32. > :21:36.We are making progress. I was talking to one of the key members

:21:36. > :21:41.of the Cabinet on Cheshire East this morning. We are still a way

:21:41. > :21:45.away from making it happen but the town once the stadium and the

:21:45. > :21:53.council has been supportive. Just to give the fans some level of hope,

:21:53. > :21:57.five years, 10 years, two years? Not as short as to, hopefully not

:21:57. > :22:00.as long as five, definitely not as long as 10.

:22:00. > :22:06.Anybody who saw last week's programme will never forget that a

:22:06. > :22:16.baby swan is called a cygnet, or a duck if you play for Crewe. It is

:22:16. > :22:30.

:22:30. > :22:40.the turn of more come to take on Who won the men's 200 metres at the

:22:40. > :22:50.

:22:50. > :23:00.Beijing Olympics? Usain Bolt. What It spread! -- it is bread! What is

:23:00. > :23:22.

:23:22. > :23:32.What is the capital of a Australia? Melbourne. Sydney. Brisbane. Perth.

:23:32. > :23:32.

:23:32. > :23:42.I am sure it is Melbourne. I should know this. Canberra. I knew that.

:23:42. > :24:05.

:24:05. > :24:13.Hearse. It is called a fall. -- foal.
