:00:03. > :00:05.Off. Blackpool have him, Scotland want him, but do England? Tonight,
:00:05. > :00:09.we can exclusively reveal that Matt Phillips is the Football League's
:00:09. > :00:19.Young Player of the Month. We'll hear from the man of the moment and
:00:19. > :00:27.
:00:27. > :00:29.his manager. Welcome to Late Kick We hear exclusively from one of
:00:29. > :00:38.football's hottest properties, Blackpool's award winning winger,
:00:38. > :00:42.Matt Phillips. I believe he is good enough for one of the top five
:00:42. > :00:47.teams in this country, and that makes him good enough for one of
:00:47. > :00:50.the top five teams in the world. Spot the Paul - how Stanley cooked
:00:50. > :00:57.up their new boss. And just what was the question that
:00:57. > :01:00.prompted that very wrong answer in Macclesfield's One on One?
:01:00. > :01:03.With me in the studio tonight, the North West's newest manager,
:01:03. > :01:07.Accrington Stanley's Paul Cook, and the youth team coach of Preston
:01:07. > :01:10.North End, Jamie Hoyland. Welcome, guys. Thanks for coming.
:01:10. > :01:13.Well, Paul's first game in charge at the Crown Ground was against
:01:13. > :01:16.Plymouth Argyle who are fighting for their lives in the Football
:01:16. > :01:20.League's bottom two. With Stanley pushing for the play-offs, it
:01:20. > :01:30.looked like a home banker. But football has a habit of upsetting
:01:30. > :01:34.the odds, as Andy Johnson reports from the Crown Ground.
:01:34. > :01:40.It is the first time in 13 seasons at that Stanley had appointed a new
:01:40. > :01:45.manager. Before Paul Cook took charge, we spoke to the club about
:01:45. > :01:52.their choice. He said it would take six or seven weeks to appoint a new
:01:52. > :02:00.manager, that Leam Richardson would be in charge. What happened?
:02:00. > :02:07.could even be longer than that. We fully intended to go to everyone
:02:07. > :02:13.who applied. But we spoke very briefly to Paul Cook, who has
:02:13. > :02:18.become the manager. It became clear that if we were to have him, he was
:02:18. > :02:22.high up on it our list of managers, then we would have to make a
:02:22. > :02:29.decision quickly because the Irish League is starting so soon.
:02:29. > :02:39.Leam Richardson had taken up charged are temporarily. Leam is 32
:02:39. > :02:39.
:02:39. > :02:42.years old. But he has got a very good head on his shoulders. The
:02:42. > :02:48.players have respected the fact he is still involved in the management
:02:48. > :02:58.structuring as well. There was no shortage of applicants.
:02:58. > :03:05.
:03:05. > :03:13.One guy in particular... Everyone will get a reply. Hopefully, they
:03:13. > :03:18.can experience Accrington Stanley first-hand.
:03:18. > :03:27.Paul Cook is already a fan's favourite. He was part of the
:03:27. > :03:32.Stanley team six years ago. good man. Well done. Let us see the
:03:32. > :03:37.can do something on the pitch. was a fan's favourite from the
:03:37. > :03:47.start. He knows the club well. He is the right man for the job.
:03:47. > :03:50.
:03:50. > :03:58.think it is a good choice for the club. He is popular as a player. We
:03:58. > :04:03.hope he will do just as well here. On the first proper date in a new
:04:03. > :04:13.job, you are keen to make a good impression. Fortunately for her
:04:13. > :04:20.
:04:21. > :04:25.Paul Cook, his players did, but all the wrong reasons. Stanley keeper
:04:25. > :04:31.conceded a shot. It was not just the assistant referee who was
:04:31. > :04:41.sinking fast. It can be lonely as a manager - you kick every ball and
:04:41. > :04:45.
:04:45. > :04:55.spent 19 at the shutting of support. -- shouting yourself hoarse. In the
:04:55. > :04:57.
:04:57. > :05:05.end, even the weather turned against Stanley. It is easy to
:05:05. > :05:12.going and shout at them. A new manager comes then, and Ed has
:05:12. > :05:18.always a transitional period. Football is funny like that.
:05:18. > :05:26.The throat is not much better today, is it? You have done it very good,
:05:26. > :05:35.was there any doubt you would take the job? No, a lot of it was to do
:05:35. > :05:40.with the timescale. We were suggesting that it is unfair that
:05:40. > :05:45.if I did go back, to then leave them at the beginning of the season.
:05:45. > :05:52.Now you are in Accrington, what have you found? It is a great,
:05:52. > :05:56.traditional club. We have to make it the focal event of the week,
:05:56. > :06:06.coming to watch us play a. We have got to give the town a reason to
:06:06. > :06:13.
:06:13. > :06:16.watch us. You know, young lads make mistakes. Experience comes with
:06:17. > :06:26.making mistakes, and we made a lot of them. Was a daunting coming in
:06:27. > :06:28.
:06:28. > :06:34.after John? No, not really. I know what the club is all about. We all
:06:34. > :06:38.know what a great job Jim and John did. I have been in Ireland for
:06:38. > :06:45.quite a while. I felt it was time to come home and take an
:06:45. > :06:50.opportunity. What do you capable of this season? We played Rotherham
:06:50. > :06:56.away and with Plymouth. The teams are very similar in their set up.
:06:56. > :07:06.They will be hard to beat. We have got to Pater -- play to our
:07:06. > :07:09.
:07:09. > :07:12.strengths. As you have seen, it was a sorry Saturday for Stanley.
:07:12. > :07:15.Morecambe are finding a little bit of form again, following up their
:07:15. > :07:18.midweek win over Macclesfield with a point at Wimbledon. They took the
:07:18. > :07:21.lead when Gary McDonald glanced home a cross from Danny Carlton.
:07:21. > :07:26.The home side were level 16 minutes from time, Rashid Yussuf scoring in
:07:26. > :07:29.front of a half steamed-up camera. The Shrimps could - and actually
:07:29. > :07:33.should have - owned it late on, Gary McDonald's reaction showing he
:07:33. > :07:36.knows he should have better when clean through. Crewe gave high-
:07:36. > :07:41.flying Southend a serious scare by the seaside, but made the long trip
:07:41. > :07:44.home without anything to show for their efforts. They almost took a
:07:44. > :07:49.first half lead when Luke Murphy's effort was parried by Glenn Morris,
:07:49. > :07:52.but Greg Perason's follow-up was also stopped. The game's only goal
:07:52. > :07:55.came in similar fashion. Ryan Hall's free kick wasn't held by
:07:55. > :07:58.Phillips, and Bilel Moseni mopped up the rebound, much to the ire of
:07:58. > :08:04.the Crewe keeper who was later warned by manager Steve Davis over
:08:04. > :08:07.his reaction. These are worrying times for Macclesfield who slipped
:08:07. > :08:11.to a seventh successive defeat, leaving them just six points above
:08:11. > :08:13.the drop zone. They had much better off the first half against
:08:13. > :08:19.Aldershot with Colin Daniel going close and then Matt Hamshaw wasting
:08:19. > :08:22.a great opportunity when clean through. The momentum shifted on
:08:22. > :08:25.the hour with Carl Tremarco's straight red card. The visitors
:08:25. > :08:31.capitalised soon after, Aaron Morris finishing off from close
:08:31. > :08:34.range. Well, if we look at the League Two
:08:34. > :08:37.table, we'll see a couple of big games coming up this midweek.
:08:37. > :08:40.Stanley away at Crewe is key to both sides' play-off hopes. Into
:08:40. > :08:43.the bottom half to show what a huge game Northampton-Macclesfield is
:08:43. > :08:47.tomorrow night. Football's food chain has long seen
:08:47. > :08:50.the best lower league talent gobbled up by the big boys. But
:08:50. > :08:55.soon, they'll be able to take that talent at bargain prices AND jump
:08:55. > :08:56.the queue on recruiting that talent in the first place. It's all down
:08:56. > :08:59.to the soon-to-be-implemented "Elite Player Performance Plan",
:08:59. > :09:09.and as Ian Haslam reports, it could have major implications for the
:09:09. > :09:14.
:09:14. > :09:24.North West's League One and Two Big prospect, snapped up by big
:09:24. > :09:26.
:09:26. > :09:31.clubs - Micah Richards sold to Manchester City. More recently, it
:09:31. > :09:40.Aldham's player sold to Chelsea. And Nathan Eccleston bought by
:09:40. > :09:44.Liverpool. All well under 17, all but demanded compensation.
:09:44. > :09:48.smaller clubs will be the compensation package. We are
:09:48. > :09:52.putting a lot of hard work and effort into players, and at the
:09:52. > :09:57.moment, we could lose them quite cheaply. From next season, is
:09:57. > :10:07.selling club will get paid for 3,000 for every year of a player's
:10:07. > :10:07.
:10:07. > :10:12.development between the ages of nine and 11. Plus the 90 minute
:10:13. > :10:18.rule will be abolished, meaning a player does not have to live within
:10:18. > :10:25.one-and-a-half hours' drive from the club. What you could find there
:10:25. > :10:31.is a lot of clubs, we can offer them scholarships, apprenticeships,
:10:31. > :10:37.earlier - at 14 of 15, and to protect themselves. A club might
:10:37. > :10:45.make an early decision on boys. We are trying to protect ourselves
:10:45. > :10:54.from a compensation. Have you. -- point of pupils stop it is a major
:10:54. > :10:58.issue. In all, 46 clubs voted in favour of the plan, and many felt
:10:58. > :11:04.they had no choice. That is because if the proposals had not been
:11:04. > :11:09.brought him, the Premier League would have withheld funding, which
:11:09. > :11:14.will now be over 5 million a season for a four year period.
:11:14. > :11:19.increase in funding, they are changing the criteria - they are
:11:19. > :11:23.saying they have to have more contact hours with age groups, at
:11:23. > :11:28.which means more full-time and part-time members of staff. That
:11:28. > :11:38.extra funding we will get will be swallowed up. Which category well
:11:38. > :11:45.our clubs be aiming for? Perry and Preston are considering their
:11:45. > :11:50.options, as are Crewe Alexandra. Only Morecambe, who do not have a
:11:50. > :11:55.youth system, are not eligible for categorisation.
:11:55. > :12:04.BBC Late Kick Off has also obtained the cost implications of each
:12:04. > :12:14.category. The overall funding needed to become a category one
:12:14. > :12:20.
:12:20. > :12:29.fund is to buoy three 5 million a Category three, which most of our
:12:29. > :12:39.clubs favour, it offers a better contribution ratio. Finally, it
:12:39. > :12:45.
:12:45. > :12:52.there is category four. Overall, it is a good thing. I have been doing
:12:52. > :12:57.this for seven years, and we have had eight lads promoted. Yet you do
:12:57. > :13:03.this to get players in your first team. It is happening anyway. The
:13:03. > :13:09.only problem we have got as a lack of control over compensation.
:13:09. > :13:12.there is the issue of what is best for the young players - being that
:13:12. > :13:19.nurtured and gaining experience, or going to a Premier League club and
:13:19. > :13:23.risking getting lost in the system. Category one will bring in younger
:13:23. > :13:29.players. If we are given the opportunity to train full-time
:13:29. > :13:33.every day, all we can offer them is a couple of nights maximum, meaning
:13:33. > :13:39.that system might increase their development a lock worker. It might
:13:39. > :13:45.be better to stay at a full -- smaller club, develop, and achieve
:13:45. > :13:49.the first team standard of football earlier. We understand a further
:13:49. > :13:53.meetings would take place on the plan, but whether minor changes are
:13:53. > :14:03.made on not, one thing is for sure - it will happen, no matter what
:14:03. > :14:08.
:14:08. > :14:12.Are they making this easier to cherry-pick? Also, it is supposed
:14:12. > :14:18.to create better players to play for the national team. Whether it
:14:18. > :14:22.does that, we do not know. But certainly they are trying to
:14:22. > :14:29.cherry-pick the best players. not pay as much in compensation to
:14:29. > :14:33.clubs? That is a problem, they have always done this, since the youth
:14:33. > :14:38.system started. But now they're doing this on the cheap and instead
:14:38. > :14:42.of just picking the elite players and paying the right amount, they
:14:42. > :14:48.will take a chance on getting quite a few and just throwing them men
:14:48. > :14:53.and thinking, if we get one out of this, we will be happy. What are
:14:53. > :15:02.the implications for a club like Preston? You are doing a brilliant
:15:02. > :15:06.job. Are you worried that they will take half a dozen? Well... We are
:15:06. > :15:12.trying to sell the club and we hope they stay with us. And you have a
:15:12. > :15:17.chance of developing and using your potential. Now, if Chelsea are Man
:15:17. > :15:21.United or Man City knock on the door with money, then the parents
:15:21. > :15:27.can sweat a little bit and it's up to the families. We're just trying
:15:27. > :15:31.to put the club in the right way. Higher frustrating is this, you are
:15:31. > :15:37.going to Accrington, that will be a source of new material yet you are
:15:37. > :15:43.facing this? One of the problems is there are pressures on academies.
:15:43. > :15:49.To produce these so-called bigger clubs. And all they're doing is
:15:49. > :15:55.dropping the age of players. Where they would have insisted on LANs of
:15:55. > :15:58.16, this is my opinion, they are now interested in lands at 12 and
:15:58. > :16:05.13. Is it right that it out the role should be a full-time
:16:05. > :16:11.footballer? I disagree. I had a conversation with somebody at the
:16:11. > :16:20.weekend and if I had it cultural sun, when I won 10 going to
:16:21. > :16:27.Chelsea? And getting back home when 16? And it has gone wrong? Plenty
:16:27. > :16:33.of fathers would say, off you go... Big money! Are we thinking about
:16:33. > :16:37.the big money that might come. If he is good enough at 18, yes, but
:16:37. > :16:44.at 12 years old, he should be enjoying his life. There is a lot
:16:44. > :16:50.of wreckage and players do not make it? That is such a big thing, at 16
:16:50. > :16:55.- 18, there has been a lot of players that you have overtaken and
:16:55. > :16:59.to get to the next level, there will be even more. Only if you come
:16:59. > :17:06.through... If England win the World Cup and 35 years, we will think it
:17:06. > :17:09.is worth it. Congratulations to Matt Phillips. Late Kick Off can
:17:09. > :17:12.reveal that the Blackpool winger is the Football League's Young Player
:17:12. > :17:15.of the Month for January. It's no surprise, really, as the 20-year-
:17:15. > :17:17.old starred for the Seasiders as they went unbeaten through the
:17:17. > :17:20.month. He's carried the form into February, scoring three times in
:17:20. > :17:30.the process. Sarah Mulkerrins went to meet Matt and his manager Ian
:17:30. > :17:33.
:17:33. > :17:37.Holloway. He is good enough for one of the top five teams in the
:17:37. > :17:43.country. That makes you good enough for one of the top five teams in
:17:43. > :17:46.the world. He is that good. How I prayers. He was spotted at the age
:17:46. > :17:53.of eight years old by Wycombe and played with them until his book to
:17:53. > :17:59.the Seasiders in 2010. It was a massive decision at the time. The
:17:59. > :18:06.rumours about four of us going. But when I got there, I hit the ground
:18:07. > :18:12.running. What were the qualities that you spot it? I saw him scoring
:18:12. > :18:17.all three types of goal, left, right and head. I could not
:18:17. > :18:24.understand why he was still at Wycombe because he was in the
:18:24. > :18:29.England set-up, he is athletic and the size of him, they spotted him.
:18:29. > :18:34.It was easy. Over 18 months ago, Matt Phillips made the move to
:18:34. > :18:38.Blackpool to these sandy shores. He scored on his Premier League debut
:18:38. > :18:44.last season but the current the Viola form that he finds himself
:18:44. > :18:50.then started at Sheffield United this season. He spent a month on
:18:50. > :18:56.loan in October and racked up an impressive six goals in seven games.
:18:56. > :19:01.I had not scored up until then from my debut. Yes, it was good to go.
:19:01. > :19:09.And get that sharpness. Ian Holloway told me from before I went,
:19:09. > :19:14.as long as I am sharp and I play, he will not keep a player out. When
:19:14. > :19:19.I come back, it's important to carry that on. And he has, scoring
:19:19. > :19:24.10 goals since his return to Blackpool. Any young fellow its
:19:24. > :19:31.confidence and he went on loan and he scored lots of goals. He lost
:19:31. > :19:36.his fear. What about the fear of losing to a bigger club? He will
:19:36. > :19:41.help us grow. Effie outgrows as quickly, we will not stand in his
:19:41. > :19:47.way. That is the way this club is. And people want to come here for
:19:47. > :19:55.that reason. It is the way that we play, that suits them, he can play
:19:55. > :19:58.left and white -- right. What about Matt Phillips? You cannot blame
:19:58. > :20:06.anybody for wanting to play in the Premier League. That is the highest
:20:06. > :20:08.point. Well done, that is a real prospect. Before we have a look at
:20:08. > :20:12.the Championship table, we can't ignore this amazing defending from
:20:12. > :20:15.Burnley's Ben Mee at Reading on Friday. Yes, it might have been the
:20:15. > :20:21.only thing he could do but how many of us would have done it? Jamie,
:20:21. > :20:26.you were a defender once upon a time. That is putting your head
:20:26. > :20:33.where it hurts. Look at that. Did you ever do anything like that?
:20:33. > :20:42.With a face like this? Of course! You have to get anything in front
:20:42. > :20:48.of the ball. Exactly. Was that great defending? Absolutely,
:20:48. > :20:56.phenomenal. Fantastic, for the lad to put his head there. It is on
:20:56. > :21:06.real and you can see from the reaction, what that meant. That is
:21:06. > :21:08.what goalkeeping is about. Fantastic. A glance at the top of
:21:08. > :21:14.Championship shows us that Blackpool are nicely placed ahead
:21:14. > :21:17.of that game at home to West Ham tomorrow. Burnley are still in with
:21:17. > :21:20.a play-off shout, despite two defeats from their last three games.
:21:20. > :21:23.We shouldn't really say this, but even the small but perfectly-formed
:21:23. > :21:27.Late Kick Off team is surprised by the enormous success of our quiz,
:21:27. > :21:31.One On One. We love it, the players love it, and by your comments on
:21:31. > :21:34.Facebook and Twitter, you love it, too! So sit back and wallow as

:23:56. > :23:59.this one? It gets better and better. From the sublime to the ridiculous
