:00:02. > :00:09.Preston North End have taken six points from 18 under their new

:00:09. > :00:19.manager. But tonight, Graham Westley tells us that this is short

:00:19. > :00:29.

:00:29. > :00:35.term pain for long term gain. How Graham Westley is laying down

:00:35. > :00:38.the law to the players at Preston. You are used to picking the kids up

:00:38. > :00:45.at school at quarter past three and we have got a new manager in charge

:00:45. > :00:52.and it is not easy to cope with. What life is like on the road for

:00:52. > :01:01.football's out of form team. That is the clincher. You are from

:01:02. > :01:04.Rochdale. Rochdale's turn to go One on One. Stay tuned about that. With

:01:04. > :01:07.me in the studio tonight, the manager of Oldham Athletic Paul

:01:07. > :01:12.Dickov and a former boss of Rochdale, it's Steve Eyre. Welcome

:01:12. > :01:14.guys, thanks for being here. More from them in just a second. There's

:01:14. > :01:19.no doubt that eyebrows were raised when Preston plumped for Graham

:01:19. > :01:22.Westley to replace Phil Brown as boss. Little known north of his

:01:22. > :01:25.previous club Stevenage, what North End fans did know centred around a

:01:25. > :01:28.non-league past and unorthodox managerial methods. Before

:01:28. > :01:32.Saturday's game with Walsall, I sat down with Graham for a no holds

:01:32. > :01:39.barred chat. I started by asking him how hard it was to integrate

:01:39. > :01:43.the nine new signings he brought to Deepdale in January. Very difficult.

:01:43. > :01:46.They have got to learn from each other and from the people that are

:01:46. > :01:51.here. They have got the confusion that comes from a new manager,

:01:51. > :01:54.totally different to what they had before. I have disrupted the

:01:54. > :01:59.working environment. They were doing what they were doing. The

:01:59. > :02:03.world has been turned upside down. They came in among a load of people

:02:03. > :02:07.that had been disturbed. They are trying to put all that together and

:02:07. > :02:11.that is not easy when you have then got a long list of injuries and

:02:12. > :02:17.suspensions and too many players at the club anyway. It has not been an

:02:17. > :02:21.easy task but I did not expect it. I thought it would be tough. When

:02:21. > :02:28.ever I have gone into any job, the first few weeks have not produced

:02:28. > :02:32.results on the pitch. People are learning the ropes but I start

:02:32. > :02:37.short term what long-term in mind and I do not make decisions

:02:37. > :02:41.immediately but decisions that are right for the long-term. We want

:02:41. > :02:48.the short-term pain for the long- term game. You say you have turned

:02:48. > :02:53.things upside down, but have you? In terms of the playing side of

:02:53. > :02:56.things, they are used to a 12 o'clock day and all of a sudden

:02:56. > :02:59.they are getting away from training in the afternoon. The amount of

:02:59. > :03:06.hours that are being demanded is higher and that is not easy for

:03:06. > :03:10.them to deal with. Does that create tension? Of course. If you like

:03:10. > :03:13.used to picking up the kids from school at quarter past three and a

:03:13. > :03:17.new manager is asking different things, that is not easy to cope

:03:17. > :03:21.with but I am not doing it for the wrong reasons. Preston is a proud

:03:21. > :03:25.Football Club and it wants results on the pitch and it has not got

:03:25. > :03:28.that in recent times and I have been brought their with new ways

:03:28. > :03:33.and that involves long days and working for what you get. You do

:03:33. > :03:37.not get out what you did not put in and in this situation in League 1,

:03:37. > :03:42.you have got to earn the right to be better than the other clubs.

:03:42. > :03:49.is a dramatic change to the schedule. Is this the short-term

:03:49. > :03:56.pain that he talked about? This is a walk in progress. Some people

:03:56. > :04:02.will not like it. Some people will part. There is no question about

:04:02. > :04:08.that. But the anything that is important is respecting each other.

:04:08. > :04:11.Some people will not join up, will not sign up. I do not have an issue

:04:11. > :04:15.with that and understand where they are coming from. But be respectful

:04:15. > :04:22.in the meantime and I will be respectful to you and we can part

:04:22. > :04:29.company on a proper basis. It has been a tricky start, hasn't it? How

:04:29. > :04:35.do you cope with that? Is that the short term problem? Looked at my

:04:35. > :04:41.start at Stevenage. It was worse than my start here. When you get

:04:41. > :04:45.into a job, if you are a long-term person, focused on delivering long-

:04:45. > :04:51.term results, you have got to do what you did to get in a position

:04:51. > :04:55.to win consistently. You can tolerate things in the short term

:04:55. > :04:58.and win games but if you understand that or not taking to the place we

:04:58. > :05:05.want to be, why bother? I want the bigger picture and the bigger job

:05:06. > :05:08.and that is how I work. Some people get short term results and hold a

:05:08. > :05:14.few hands and then I would get better results but that is a waste

:05:14. > :05:18.of time because I want the big picture and winning promotion and

:05:18. > :05:23.getting into the Premier League Eden. It's some players are not

:05:23. > :05:28.going to come with you, what about that? That is an interesting

:05:28. > :05:37.question to be asked. I would probably be by major somebody that

:05:37. > :05:41.does not worry about popularity. But is that 100 % true? If I

:05:41. > :05:46.believe something will take me towards winning and my job is

:05:46. > :05:50.winning matches, I will do it. If you start worrying about what

:05:50. > :05:55.people are going to like, you can start doing the wrong things. You

:05:56. > :06:01.have got to focus on the things that create success. But you do

:06:01. > :06:05.need to take people with you and that is a form of popularity, maybe.

:06:05. > :06:11.Without getting confused, do the right stuffing and try to educate

:06:11. > :06:15.people and bring them with you. -- the right thing. If you are coming

:06:15. > :06:21.to a club with evolution all revolution and some people are not

:06:21. > :06:26.buying into that, you will say, treat it like an adult. But what

:06:26. > :06:33.about coping on an emotional basis it players do not want to be there?

:06:33. > :06:38.Do you have to blank it out? think he deal with them as people.

:06:38. > :06:41.You can never mind and you can be minded in a certain way and still

:06:41. > :06:47.deal with it and talk to people and understand people and give them the

:06:47. > :06:56.time. I have given a lot of time to people that might not be a part of

:06:56. > :07:00.the teacher, I am sure. But I am not going to bend. -- future. I am

:07:00. > :07:06.quite happy talking to them and explaining and giving them a chance

:07:06. > :07:10.to buy him and changed the way they are thinking. But that does not

:07:10. > :07:19.mean I have to stop them myself and allow emotions to get the better of

:07:19. > :07:22.situations. That is the right way Graham and I chatted for much

:07:22. > :07:25.longer and you can hear all of my interview on BBC Radio Lancashire

:07:25. > :07:28.tomorrow night. Tune in from six o'clock. Well with details of

:07:28. > :07:36.Preston's match with Walsall and the rest of the League One action

:07:37. > :07:40.from the weekend, here's BBC Radio Graham Westley's opinion of this

:07:40. > :07:43.one balls that neither team did well enough to win. Preston North

:07:43. > :07:48.end came closest with Chris Holroyd end came closest with Chris Holroyd

:07:48. > :07:54.going close with this header. Graham Cummins shade innovation to

:07:54. > :08:00.get a shot away to goal. After the break, Jamie Proctor had an effort

:08:00. > :08:04.deflected from the goal. Thoughts go out to Adam Barton. He was due

:08:04. > :08:11.to have surgery on a dislocated ankle but he looks like he has

:08:11. > :08:14.ended his season. Tranmere have got one win in 16 games and Oldham were

:08:14. > :08:19.hammered 5-0 in their last match and both teams have got a lot to

:08:19. > :08:26.prove at Boundary Park. The first opportunity came to raiders. A

:08:26. > :08:32.header from a corner. The goal of the game came after the break.

:08:32. > :08:37.Since then found again. Converting emphatically. Oldham were creating

:08:37. > :08:42.the better chances. Particularly this one from this player, he could

:08:42. > :08:47.not believe he failed to score. It almost went all the way through but

:08:47. > :08:52.bounced back before the visitors went close as well. Andy Robinson

:08:52. > :08:59.shooting across goal and failing to deal with the ball. Oldham bouncing

:08:59. > :09:05.back. Les Parry under increasing pressure to get results. Bury boss

:09:05. > :09:11.Ritchie Barker said he was happy with a point and he is now at home

:09:11. > :09:17.to Leyton Orient. They took the lead early after a sweet strike.

:09:17. > :09:23.But the former Tranmere players got them back into the game four

:09:23. > :09:28.minutes after coming on for his debut. This striker made certain

:09:28. > :09:34.the points were shed. Rochdale are improving under John Coleman and

:09:34. > :09:43.that continues. This header was the best in a game of few chances and

:09:43. > :09:47.just one defeat in five since the Well I'd love to say let's take a

:09:47. > :09:48.look at the top of League One, but there's no point because we have no

:09:49. > :09:51.teams in it! The bottom half, teams in it! The bottom half,

:09:52. > :09:54.though, shows Bury needing what would be a first win in 7 against

:09:54. > :10:04.Hartlepool tomorrow and Tranmere's trip to Chesterfield next Saturday

:10:04. > :10:05.

:10:05. > :10:09.How difficult was that to watch? is not difficult to watch but it is

:10:09. > :10:14.difficult watching fantastic players at a great club but it is

:10:14. > :10:20.not difficult to watch and I am happy to see them progress. The

:10:20. > :10:25.players are very close to my heart. I wish them well and I would like

:10:25. > :10:30.to be on the touchline with them and I am confident. What went wrong

:10:30. > :10:36.for you at Rochdale? We were short of a little bit of time. I was

:10:36. > :10:41.grateful for the support. I spent two decades at Manchester City and

:10:41. > :10:46.it was brave of them to make such a choice and brave of me to make a

:10:46. > :10:51.decision to depart. You did twenty- one years. You had some really

:10:51. > :10:57.great players. Do you regret that? Was that a gamble to move into

:10:57. > :11:01.management? It was not initially on my mind but when I was invited to

:11:01. > :11:06.speak to Rochdale, with Manchester City's permission I went to

:11:06. > :11:11.discussions and I was grateful to be offered the job and except it.

:11:11. > :11:16.In terms of the time I have been given, I am grateful for the

:11:16. > :11:20.assistance and the start. I was grateful for the opportunity and I

:11:20. > :11:24.would like to think I could have done a bit more than what happened.

:11:24. > :11:28.But I wish John all the best with the privilege he has. What good

:11:28. > :11:34.they have done better at? Just a bit more time but they are very

:11:34. > :11:39.good people there. Genuine people. What is life like outside the game

:11:39. > :11:44.tried to get back in? It is a bit difficult. I cannot complain about

:11:44. > :11:49.that. But 92 people did that job and it is a privilege and he does

:11:49. > :11:53.it very well. I enjoyed it and would not shy away in the future.

:11:53. > :11:58.You have got a bit of time to do different things and I will try to

:11:58. > :12:08.become a better manager. A better person. I will be watching lots of

:12:08. > :12:09.

:12:09. > :12:12.football and I hope when something I think he was unlucky, with a lot

:12:12. > :12:17.of the results they had, they played some wonderful football. A

:12:17. > :12:22.lot of the players cape in, I know they had respect for him as well,

:12:22. > :12:26.and you know, I hope she back in the game soon, people need good

:12:26. > :12:31.coaches and managers and that is something Steve is. Are you tempted

:12:31. > :12:38.to get the phone up and ring Man City saying I brought great players

:12:38. > :12:42.through, can I come back. Nice of do you say so. Certainly by no

:12:42. > :12:45.means was it single-handedly, it was under great leadership in the

:12:45. > :12:48.youth system and the reserve system and we were developing player fons

:12:48. > :12:50.the first team. It is a different challenge for the people in

:12:50. > :12:55.position there, and say it wonderful club, it is close to my

:12:55. > :13:00.heart. We both love the club. Paul is a legend there, and you know, we

:13:00. > :13:04.spent a lot of our spare time there now, everybody knows of my

:13:04. > :13:08.situation. It is not a case of picking the phone up. We wish you

:13:08. > :13:10.well. More from the boys in a second. Now it is weeks since

:13:11. > :13:14.Burnley and Blackpool played Saturday championship games. That

:13:14. > :13:18.is what they did at the weekend, with differing fortunes. Here is

:13:18. > :13:23.with differing fortunes. Here is Andy Johnson. After that 4-1

:13:23. > :13:26.reverse to West Ham, this was a perfect afternoon for Blackpool.

:13:26. > :13:31.First straight away win to lift them back into the play off places,

:13:31. > :13:36.they were behind to a first half goal from John stead but the tide

:13:36. > :13:40.turned their way after the break. They equalised ten minutes into the

:13:40. > :13:44.second half, following a foul on Thomas Ince. He took the free-kick

:13:44. > :13:49.and saw it deflected past David James. It was the impetus they

:13:49. > :13:56.needed. But it wasn't until six minutes from time they made it

:13:56. > :13:59.count. Ormerod had come off the bench fors into score. Philips put

:13:59. > :14:04.the lid on the victory three minutes from time. His 139 of the

:14:04. > :14:10.season. If Burnley could sort out their home form their play off

:14:10. > :14:16.place would be in a better shape. They went two down to Millwall at

:14:16. > :14:22.Turf Moor. David Edgar missed a routine clearance. If that was

:14:22. > :14:29.ridiculous, the Lion's second was sublime. Pick your own superlative

:14:29. > :14:33.for this volley. Burnley were 3 down for a consolation. Rodriguez

:14:33. > :14:36.scored from the spot. It is three defeats from four games for Burnley

:14:36. > :14:40.defeats from four games for Burnley who are six points shy of the play-

:14:40. > :14:45.offs. Tough for then but Blackpool are in good shape off the field.

:14:45. > :14:50.Theyance noun -- announced profits of more than 20 million. They are

:14:50. > :14:54.looking nicely placed in the table too, Burnley really do need to find

:14:54. > :14:58.some consistency to get their play off push again. Now, what did you

:14:58. > :15:01.do on New Year's Eve? You can't remember? It has ban while for

:15:01. > :15:05.Macclesfield town they celebrated with three points against Port Vale.

:15:05. > :15:15.But since then not a single point for the Silkmen. Would Saturday's

:15:15. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:30.Oxford. Sound like a nice day out then. Not so for Macclesfield town,

:15:30. > :15:36.and their fans. Eight losss in a row, not a single point so far this

:15:36. > :15:41.year, and to top things off, ten first team players out injured, and

:15:41. > :15:44.one suspended. Just how does the manager cope with that? You I know,

:15:44. > :15:48.we sort of like lost a load of we sort of like lost a load of

:15:48. > :15:51.midfield players. We managed to scover come that, we lost a striker.

:15:51. > :15:55.Starting to get our strikers back, we had two defenders fit. In all

:15:55. > :15:59.the time I have been in plaul, whether it be as a play e in

:15:59. > :16:05.management, in coaching, whatever, you know, Glynn, they say, we have

:16:05. > :16:08.never known anything like this. Meet Richard, Macclesfield's third

:16:08. > :16:13.goalkeeper of the week. He was brought in on emergency loan from

:16:13. > :16:17.Sheffield Wednesday to replace the injured Steve Collis. Steven Turner

:16:17. > :16:24.had been brought in on Thursday to replace vague ga injured in the

:16:24. > :16:27.game on Tuesday, you count script their bad luck at the moment. Bad

:16:27. > :16:30.luck but Gary Simpson still has to put out a team and finding

:16:30. > :16:34.replacements has been tough for the club. We have scoured the country

:16:34. > :16:38.trying to get people in, some managers have helped us, some have

:16:38. > :16:41.said yes The players have said no. Some managers have said no, can't

:16:41. > :16:46.let you have them. We have absolutely been up and down the

:16:46. > :16:50.country trying to get people in. Obviously, we are not massive club,

:16:50. > :16:54.you know, we can't pay massive money, but wroe know, needs must

:16:54. > :16:58.and we have tried everything. Macclesfield fans were thin on the

:16:58. > :17:02.ground on Saturday. Only 63 dedicated souls travelled to the

:17:03. > :17:07.game, and they were beginning to voice their frustration. I know we

:17:07. > :17:12.have the injury, but I am sick of the excuses to be honest. I want to

:17:12. > :17:16.see a bit of passion from the players, I want to see people as

:17:16. > :17:20.keen to see them stay in the league as I am. He is like this every year

:17:20. > :17:30.we are in the relegation battle. It is a bit different this year, we

:17:30. > :17:31.

:17:31. > :17:35.dropped very very quickly, more Before the game Gary Simpson said

:17:35. > :17:38.things need to turn now for Macclesfield Town and perhaps this

:17:38. > :17:46.own goal from Oxford's Michael Duberry was a sign their luck was

:17:46. > :17:49.about to change. The Silkmen's hunger was in full show. New and

:17:49. > :17:55.old players alike throwing themselves in front of every ball

:17:55. > :18:00.as Oxford increased their pressure in attack. Mac could only hold on

:18:00. > :18:03.for so long. Olly Johnson found the bottom corner for Oxford, levelling

:18:03. > :18:08.things before the break. Are you happy with a point at half-time?

:18:08. > :18:11.After about nine defeats in a row I would take a point. What is

:18:11. > :18:18.wonderful is the team spirit that is showing through today. They are

:18:18. > :18:22.at Northampton on Tuesday and we saw us lose a 1-0 lead them.

:18:22. > :18:27.nervous second half for Macclesfield fan, would today bring

:18:27. > :18:33.a first point of 2012? More silk bodies blocking every threatening

:18:33. > :18:38.ball and few chances for them in attack butlet plate -- ultimately

:18:38. > :18:41.neither team could find the winner. A point at last then for

:18:41. > :18:45.Macclesfield Town. Their luck perhaps now turning. Oxford were a

:18:45. > :18:49.stronger team, and bet e but I thought they held in very well.

:18:49. > :18:53.Very happy. First points of the year. I am happy with that. I

:18:53. > :18:57.thought it was going to be 4-1. Do with a few more now. We need to get

:18:57. > :19:03.to that famous 50 points and we should be fine. Great spirit, and

:19:03. > :19:07.we are going to need it, because you know, it is going to be a long

:19:07. > :19:13.15, whatever it is games left. It is going to be a long haul and we

:19:13. > :19:16.can buy a bit of time, then great, because we will need them. Well

:19:16. > :19:19.done to the 63 fans who travelled first of all. Paul, can they build

:19:20. > :19:24.on that? They have had a terrible run, but that point away, is it

:19:25. > :19:28.something you can build on? I think you have to, Oxford are one of the

:19:28. > :19:32.favourites to go up, probably rightly so. Gary is talking about

:19:32. > :19:36.trying to get players in and the players at Oxford have Michael

:19:36. > :19:39.Duberry, Olly Johnson who they signed from Norwich, they are big

:19:39. > :19:42.players for League Two. Gary has put a team together there, who have

:19:42. > :19:45.worked hard and got a point and the confidence they will take from that

:19:45. > :19:49.is massive. They were throwing themselves in front of the ball.

:19:49. > :19:53.How do you motivate a team that has gone seven or eight games without a

:19:53. > :19:57.win? I It is difficult. You have to stick together, it was great to see

:19:57. > :20:01.the supporters there and a lot of them were young teenager, their

:20:02. > :20:05.enthusiasm will be key, supporters, stick behind the team and the

:20:05. > :20:08.manager. The manager has to connect with the players and put on good

:20:08. > :20:12.training, and think, really, the manager is the one who gets the

:20:12. > :20:17.first mention of how it is going to go right or wrong. Gary and Glynn

:20:17. > :20:21.will have to do their bit. The players need to do more for the

:20:21. > :20:25.manager. This issue with injuries and suspensions, how do you as a

:20:25. > :20:32.manager feel? You wanted to tell everyone, look I have ten players

:20:32. > :20:36.but the fans are sick of hearing it. Having ten first team players out

:20:36. > :20:42.is not an excuse. Gary is not blaming the referee or the piches

:20:42. > :20:45.or anything else. It is fact and to have a small squad at a khrun like

:20:45. > :20:50.Macclesfield, to have ten first teamers out there is not a lot you

:20:50. > :20:56.can do. The players that are there, believe in them, work nem hard.

:21:01. > :21:07.Two actions, including six goals at Crewe, is Howard Booth. It was a

:21:07. > :21:12.cracking game for the neutrals at Crewe. They went behind to a well

:21:12. > :21:17.worked Wimbledon goal but took charge and should have been out of

:21:17. > :21:21.sight. Byron Moore's screamer eluded the keeper. Greg Pearson

:21:21. > :21:25.scored especially over the shoulder, to give his side a healthy 3-1

:21:25. > :21:29.half-time lead. It should have been four from the spot after the break,

:21:30. > :21:34.Powell was fouled in the box. Westwood's kick was saved and that

:21:34. > :21:44.would prove costly w Wimbledon scoring twice in the last nine

:21:44. > :21:45.

:21:45. > :21:50.minutes to salvage a point. Paul Cook hasn't had the best of starts

:21:50. > :21:56.with Stanly, three games and three defeats, but they put up an

:21:56. > :22:05.excellent fight against Swindon. Benson put the home side ahead.

:22:05. > :22:10.Stanley could so easily have been level soon after. Almond came

:22:10. > :22:17.closer, hitting the host. It wasn't their day and Benson scored again

:22:17. > :22:27.after a clearance by win ward. What a week for mor come. A draw at

:22:27. > :22:28.

:22:28. > :22:32.Crawley followed up by this victory over another promotion chaser. The

:22:32. > :22:36.shrimps nearly scored a second after the break. Gary Hunter going

:22:36. > :22:41.down an amazing run into the Southend penalty area. Even when up

:22:41. > :22:45.ended he got a pass away to Ellison and unfortunately for the striker

:22:45. > :22:50.and unfortunately for the striker Ellison shot wide. North-west sides

:22:50. > :22:54.have plenty to play for. A look at the top half of League Two sees how

:22:54. > :22:56.important those two dropped points were for Crewe. Macclesfield

:22:56. > :23:01.Plymouth tomorrow night is a crucial game as you will imagine

:23:01. > :23:07.for both teams. That game at the Moss Rose isn't the only one worth

:23:07. > :23:10.going out to. Crewe make the short trip to Port Vale needing a win and

:23:10. > :23:14.there is a big game in the Championship on Friday. Blackpool

:26:23. > :26:27.doing things than fining players? bit of both. Like the boys to enjoy

:26:27. > :26:30.it. I have to hold back, because I hear the banter and I want to get

:26:30. > :26:34.involved myself, but being the manager now I can't do that. I

:26:34. > :26:38.think it is important the changing room is right. I like the boys to

:26:38. > :26:42.enjoy training but I like to enjoy them having time together after.

:26:42. > :26:46.They are not a group that finish training and want to shoot off home

:26:46. > :26:53.they stay behind, have a chat and a laugh. How much did they enjoy this

:27:00. > :27:05.Tranmere. Did you play into them in training? A little bit. Yeah, a

:27:05. > :27:08.little bit. The one thing they do I felt they let everybody down

:27:09. > :27:13.against MK Dons was, they know what I'm like, if they go out and have a

:27:13. > :27:18.right good go, for the fan, for, the doeching staff and for the club,

:27:18. > :27:21.then I find it very hard to be critical of them. I know they will

:27:21. > :27:29.make mistakes, if they do it doing the right thing I will back them

:27:29. > :27:32.all the way. Two of three of them let their heads go down easily. If

:27:32. > :27:37.you have fans travelling they owe it to the club and themselves to

:27:37. > :27:39.have a right goo go. You were critical in that interview about

:27:39. > :27:44.agents, saying they were making demands that the players weren't

:27:44. > :27:49.living to up almost. How much of a nuisance are they on a daily basis?

:27:49. > :27:52.There is good once and bad ones. You know, I think the problem you

:27:52. > :27:56.have as a manager you try to build something and you trying to get a

:27:56. > :28:00.good team together. On the outside the agents are the ones that tell

:28:00. > :28:07.the players they are getting the moves left right and centre. I

:28:07. > :28:10.would never stand in a player's way if they want to better themselves,

:28:10. > :28:14.but some time, it is a distraction when you know the agent is trying

:28:14. > :28:19.to get them a move. I don't mind if they are up front and honest about

:28:19. > :28:24.it but it is when they try and do things behind your back. It annoys

:28:24. > :28:28.you. You look to have turned it round Good luck midweek. That is it

:28:28. > :28:33.for tonight. Thanks for watching. Tell your early to bed mates they
