:00:00. > :00:00.Hello, joining me tonight, two defenders with a thousand g`mes

:00:07. > :00:09.between them. Who knows how many more they could have played in if

:00:10. > :00:29.they'd had a curry first? Wdlcome to Late Kick Off.

:00:30. > :00:35.Does carry make you a better player? The results are in from our

:00:36. > :00:41.scientific survey. Your delhvery will be with you in about 20

:00:42. > :00:50.minutes. We have loads of goals but what about the ones that got away?

:00:51. > :00:52.There are loads of them as well And revered at Swindon in Portslouth,

:00:53. > :00:57.Alan McLoughlin gives an exclusive interview on foot and his fhght

:00:58. > :01:04.against cancer. I suppose at the time I thought I was letting

:01:05. > :01:09.everyone down. I thought, actually, I was letting them down and making

:01:10. > :01:15.them worried. And highlights from tonight's play`off clash in league

:01:16. > :01:20.two. Gary Waddock takes charge. The action from Roots Hall is coming up.

:01:21. > :01:25.Welcome to Adie Williams and Guy Branston. Gary has played whth 9

:01:26. > :01:32.clubs, most recently promotd Argyll. Lots to come and lots about our

:01:33. > :01:40.curry survey. Would you havd fancied a curry before a game? Definitely.

:01:41. > :01:43.Not for me. The man with all the answers is Dr Stewart Bruce`Low and

:01:44. > :01:46.he's waiting in the wings rhght now to give his verdict. Let's get into

:01:47. > :01:49.the Championship right now, it's all change again in the top six. We

:01:50. > :01:59.start with Reading on the road. That's good news these days.

:02:00. > :02:06.Captain 's performance from Jobi McAnuff. Reading reinforce their

:02:07. > :02:11.play`off claim. Great composure for the first goal. The experienced

:02:12. > :02:19.defender makes a rash challdnge definitely a penalty. Scored by the

:02:20. > :02:25.former Swindon man. Alex McCarthy very nearly saved that one. This man

:02:26. > :02:30.is not up to speed, nine go`ls this season, should have been dotble

:02:31. > :02:36.figures. Watch out for Jobi McAnuff, throws himself at the cross. A real

:02:37. > :02:42.captain's performance. Readhng in the top six.

:02:43. > :02:47.Brighton's hopes of a top shx finish were dented by this defeat to

:02:48. > :02:49.Ipswich. Brighton's captain not even watching the bold year as the

:02:50. > :02:56.coroner comes in. The keeper misses it, soft goal to give away. The ads

:02:57. > :03:03.striker gets in front of Matty Upson. Another soft goal. Another

:03:04. > :03:07.bad day at the office for Brighton. Bournemouth have kept five clean

:03:08. > :03:13.sheets in their last six. Poor defending, but they got awax with

:03:14. > :03:16.it. Victory at bottom of thd table Barnsley came thanks to a l`te goal.

:03:17. > :03:25.Exciting stuff for the Cherries fans. Ian Hart, time to delhver one

:03:26. > :03:30.of your best. Great save, is it turned over the line? It is. The

:03:31. > :03:39.Cherries fumbled a tin in the 9 rd minute. `` have fumbled it hn. They

:03:40. > :03:48.celebrate in front of their fans. It is going to be another 1`0 win on

:03:49. > :03:52.the road. It is Reading's ttrn, they're win put above Nottingham

:03:53. > :03:58.Forest. Brighton's defeat drops them to eighth place. Bournemouth nudge

:03:59. > :04:02.up to 11. Jobi McAnuff, the matchwinner at Birmingham, two years

:04:03. > :04:08.on this last goal. He doesn't score many goals, but he gives evdrything.

:04:09. > :04:14.Week in week out. He leads by example. A fantastic captain. They

:04:15. > :04:24.are missing players at the loment with injury, Reading, but Chris

:04:25. > :04:28.Beard has gone up to Burnlex. I think he has had his hands tied One

:04:29. > :04:35.or two promises have not bedn fulfilled. He will be playing

:04:36. > :04:43.Premier League football this season. Jason Roberts, how much of ` missed

:04:44. > :04:48.him? He has retired. Big pl`yer big signing back in January. Jason

:04:49. > :04:56.Roberts, here's a better pl`yer when he has his back to goal. He loves

:04:57. > :05:03.rolling you. He can score goals We wish Jason all the best. With

:05:04. > :05:08.Brighton, no clarity is what the fans were saying to me. Continental

:05:09. > :05:13.manager, is he going to change the style of play? Definitely, xou have

:05:14. > :05:18.got to take into account thd English style of football. If you h`ven t

:05:19. > :05:24.got the game, you're going to struggle. They have probablx been

:05:25. > :05:35.through all the plans at Yeovil this season. Two points dropped from

:05:36. > :05:42.their game against Bolton. Fantastic play. He has been in and around the

:05:43. > :05:48.Premier League, he should bd scoring more than that. It is going so well

:05:49. > :05:56.at that point, you think thdy are out of the bottom three at this

:05:57. > :06:05.stage. But 2`1. Then the big talking point here. The penalty. Kevin

:06:06. > :06:09.Dawson. Watch what the referee does. Walking over, he changes his

:06:10. > :06:17.decision, says it is a red card and a penalty. They do not make the most

:06:18. > :06:24.of it. It is shocking. The defending here is even more shocking.

:06:25. > :06:27.Goalkeeper, absolute disastdr. It is a big blow for them, becausd at one

:06:28. > :06:34.stage, they had leapfrogged Millwall. Always look at thd end of

:06:35. > :06:37.the table at the end of the season. Still to come: The science of curry

:06:38. > :06:41.` a good pre`match meal or not? The results will be hot off the press

:06:42. > :06:43.very soon. Plus we have League One and League Two action, incltding

:06:44. > :06:47.highlights of tonight's plax off encounter. Oxford at Southend. New

:06:48. > :06:50.manager Gary Waddock at the helm. Plus an exclusive interview with

:06:51. > :06:53.Portsmouth star Alan McLoughlin on his fight against cancer and the

:06:54. > :07:02.goal that took him into Irish folklore. It got us to the World Cup

:07:03. > :07:06.in 1994. A few pints of Guinness on the back of that. Five of the bottom

:07:07. > :07:09.seven clubs in League Two are from across our region. Only Exeter fans

:07:10. > :07:20.had anything to shout about this weekend.

:07:21. > :07:26.A massive victory for Exeter as the Emperor Football League survival.

:07:27. > :07:31.When you are towards the bottom and own goal will do nicely. On the

:07:32. > :07:38.blindside of the defender, he gets the final touch. A second is all

:07:39. > :07:45.about anticipation. He is expecting the mistake. He follows up the free

:07:46. > :07:53.kick, at River Quinn for Exdter `` at horrific win.

:07:54. > :07:58.Terrible challenge, surely he stamped on the lad. No complaints at

:07:59. > :08:05.all. He is the skipper, he should know better. Totally deservds this

:08:06. > :08:16.ban. Not too much to smile `bout for Portsmouth. Miss of the week. Two

:08:17. > :08:23.wins in their previous thred have given Torquay hope of staying in

:08:24. > :08:29.league two. Sent off for an elbow, clearly leading with his arl. No

:08:30. > :08:35.complaints for me, the referee is spot`on. Eight defeats in 13 since

:08:36. > :08:42.Chris Hargreaves took over. Desperate times for Torquay.

:08:43. > :08:47.Here's the bottom. Torquay `re six points from safety where Portsmouth

:08:48. > :08:50.sit. But Wycombe and Bristol Rovers are right in the thick of it too.

:08:51. > :08:59.Exeter go into tomorrow night's huge Devon Derby in 17th. Guy, all the

:09:00. > :09:05.clubs never relegated. What is the key when you're down there?

:09:06. > :09:12.Character on an off the pitch. Do not get too down, or too high.

:09:13. > :09:18.Knowing when and how to win the game is important. Exeter, a big first

:09:19. > :09:24.home win since October. That will change their dressing rooms I called

:09:25. > :09:32.of the, Google `` that will change their dressing room, won't ht? Two

:09:33. > :09:37.fantastic goals at the weekdnd, yes. Bristol Rovers, Joe O'Toole had the

:09:38. > :09:43.best chance. They have had ` mixed week. Good news about the stadium.

:09:44. > :09:48.They could not get the result. Yeah, there wasn't enough p`ce on

:09:49. > :09:57.the cross. Bristol Rovers h`ve only had one when. Ten yellow cards, one

:09:58. > :10:01.red card for Joe O'Toole. You need a player like that in your te`m and

:10:02. > :10:04.playing at the end of the sdason. Do you tell him to curb his attitude a

:10:05. > :10:10.bit, or does he just have to be himself? He should be himself. There

:10:11. > :10:17.should be enough in the squ`d to bring someone in if he gets picked.

:10:18. > :10:24.You want on the field, though. Absolutely. You have got to let him

:10:25. > :10:30.get on with it. But you do not want foolish bookings. Foolish ddfending

:10:31. > :10:37.as well. Let's take a look `t Wycombe. Not so good from them at

:10:38. > :10:45.the weekend. They needed better than this. That is a scramble and a half.

:10:46. > :10:55.You do not mark space, you lark the man. He is in the six yard box, drab

:10:56. > :11:02.and get hold of him. Space never scores. Portsmouth need somd goals.

:11:03. > :11:09.They have had decent perforlances lately. A decent point that evening,

:11:10. > :11:19.but they need more points. That is going to be a struggle. Can Torquay

:11:20. > :11:22.stay up? No. Now our special interview with Alan McLoughlin. As a

:11:23. > :11:26.Portsmouth player he drove the midfield in the 90s. Now as a coach

:11:27. > :11:30.he's trying to help pull thd team up by the boot straps. But in `ll the

:11:31. > :11:32.recent turmoil at the club @lan has been fighting his own battld against

:11:33. > :11:38.kidney cancer. He's talked exclusively to our Late Kick Off

:11:39. > :11:41.reporter Andy Steggall. On match day, Alan McLoughlhn, the

:11:42. > :11:49.coach, is just as committed as he was as a player. A commitment he

:11:50. > :11:55.also shows every day in trahning. Your first movement should be here.

:11:56. > :12:01.To try and give information to the players, I tend to put in four

:12:02. > :12:07.straight in. At times it can be fulfilling, everything you wanted to

:12:08. > :12:11.be. As a youngster, Allen w`s never given the playing career on a plate.

:12:12. > :12:15.Overlooked in the Manchester area by several clubs, Manchester United

:12:16. > :12:21.would spot him and give him a few trial sessions. Tuesday and Thursday

:12:22. > :12:26.nights, I was the hungriest and meanest player out there. I knew it

:12:27. > :12:29.was my last chance. If not ht was college and maybe non`leagud

:12:30. > :12:37.football. It wasn't really what I wanted to do. I coveted United

:12:38. > :12:43.apprenticeship followed. Lot McCarry signed him at Swindon. Southampton

:12:44. > :12:47.next, he was there a record signing at the time. When Jim Smith came

:12:48. > :12:53.calling, he made the hardest crossing to Portsmouth. The other

:12:54. > :13:00.side of the Hampshire rivalry. I used to sit around there. F`cing the

:13:01. > :13:05.mirror down there. As Jim Slith would come down, I was alwaxs in his

:13:06. > :13:09.eye line first. I bought thd brunt of his ranting and raving. Hf you

:13:10. > :13:14.met us at the door, you are doing OK. If he went to the toilet first,

:13:15. > :13:20.you knew you were in for a bit of a volley, shall we say. The fhrst time

:13:21. > :13:25.I walked out at Fratton Park, I got booed for 20 minutes. I was called

:13:26. > :13:30.most thing under the sun for 20 minutes, because I come frol

:13:31. > :13:34.Southampton, the enemy up the road. And then I scored a lovely goal in

:13:35. > :13:37.the top corner. It makes me laugh that everyone who was booing,

:13:38. > :13:44.suddenly they were jumping tp and down. You have so many playdrs you

:13:45. > :13:50.come into contact with, but he is a really good friend of mine. He is

:13:51. > :13:55.right up there. I trust implicitly. Alan McLoughlin the player?

:13:56. > :14:06.Passionate on the pitch. Quhte chirpy. For the quality plaxer. `` a

:14:07. > :14:14.quality player. Not wanting to let anybody down, whether it be myself,

:14:15. > :14:18.my family, the fans. I have thought about how I might be brilli`nt in

:14:19. > :14:25.this game and it wasn't that. I didn't want to go out there and make

:14:26. > :14:30.an idiot of myself. What I didn t do is hide on the pitch. A lot of

:14:31. > :14:39.people make a mistake and don't hide. A fantastic bloke, a loyal

:14:40. > :14:45.player. He always gave 110%. Fearless. After hanging up his

:14:46. > :14:53.boots, his career would arrhve back at Pompey. Then came a life changing

:14:54. > :14:57.event, kidney cancer. I passed blood, hell of a lot of blood, and

:14:58. > :15:01.the shock was immense. My fhrst thought was, I wasn't going to sit

:15:02. > :15:07.on my hands, I took myself straight to hospital. I knew there w`s

:15:08. > :15:12.something sinister Ltd the two people out of the room with me in

:15:13. > :15:22.the same ward. `` when they too can the two people out of the w`rd. The

:15:23. > :15:31.first reaction is right and terror. That was really difficult to tell my

:15:32. > :15:35.wife and kids. I did it. It was important that I did it, th`t I told

:15:36. > :15:40.them. It wasn't the consult`nt telling them. I know it sounds daft

:15:41. > :15:43.now. I suppose at the time H thought I was letting everyone down. That

:15:44. > :15:47.was the overriding thing. I thought I was letting them down by getting

:15:48. > :15:51.this and making them worry, so that was daft, I know, but that hs what

:15:52. > :15:54.it was. You said that about your football, now you are saying it

:15:55. > :15:58.about something that is in comparison in a different ldague? It

:15:59. > :16:02.was. Nothing can prepare yot for that. It's a difficult thing. You

:16:03. > :16:06.get through it as a family tnit as best you can. I have had a couple of

:16:07. > :16:10.scans now and they have been clear and you move forward and th`t is

:16:11. > :16:13.what you have to do. You sed people who have hidden things that they

:16:14. > :16:16.should have brought to light, whether it's out of ignorance,

:16:17. > :16:19.whether it's out of fear, for whatever reason, they don't do the

:16:20. > :16:25.right thing. But Macca did. And that's saved his life. Away from

:16:26. > :16:28.Portsmouth, he is part of Irish footballing folklore. He was a

:16:29. > :16:31.constant in their golden er` and lauded for this goal which darned

:16:32. > :16:38.the point which qualified Ehre for the first of two of World Ctps,

:16:39. > :16:41.Italia '90. Those glories are past. Alan definitely now lives in the

:16:42. > :16:48.Pompey and personal, present and future. I have loved it and I wake

:16:49. > :16:53.up every day and enjoy going into work. If you can do that, that's a

:16:54. > :16:56.real bonus. Top man, Alan McLoughlin, and if you

:16:57. > :16:59.want to see more, on our Facebook page, Late Kick Off South, we'll put

:17:00. > :17:05.lots more of Alan's intervidw up there throughout the week. So have a

:17:06. > :17:08.look. We are not done with League Two, play`off and promotion hopes

:17:09. > :17:14.still to be assessed becausd under new management, there are extended

:17:15. > :17:18.highlights of Oxford at Southend. And Plymouth's race to the play`offs

:17:19. > :17:26.continue. Guy Branston has been with them all season. His views on their

:17:27. > :17:29.promotion chances coming up. Plus, of course, our curry

:17:30. > :17:32.experiment will be revealed as well. We are going to League One first.

:17:33. > :17:35.You'll hear "bobble", "scruffy" and "celebration" in this round`up ` and

:17:36. > :17:42.they all come from the same game. We start with a spot`kick at Swindon.

:17:43. > :17:48.A huge win for Swindon after eight without a victory, it all btt ended

:17:49. > :17:52.their play`off ambitions. Clear penalty, challenge wouldn't look out

:17:53. > :17:56.of place at Twickenham. Michael Smith for Swindon, decisive from the

:17:57. > :18:04.spot. Plenty of encouraging signs for Mark Cooper. They'll want to

:18:05. > :18:10.finish the season on a high. Bristol City are unbeaten in five,

:18:11. > :18:13.11 points from a possible 14. It could have easily been all three as

:18:14. > :18:15.well. Martin Paterson with the scruffy opener, Thomas should have

:18:16. > :18:20.doubled the lead, probably would have ` look for the bobble ` the

:18:21. > :18:25.crowd doesn't see that. Citx's first goal I called scruffy, the same word

:18:26. > :18:30.could be used for their second. Scott Wagstaff making it 2`0. Look

:18:31. > :18:35.out for the celebration. Wh`t is all that about? Needs some work

:18:36. > :18:39.Two late Colchester goals spoiled Steve Cotterill's day. Two points

:18:40. > :18:42.dropped. Not sure why the kdeper is complaining. City are not qtite out

:18:43. > :18:46.of the danger, sometimes yot have to put your hands up and say, "That's a

:18:47. > :18:51.cracking strike!" Crawley's run of two straight wins came to an end at

:18:52. > :18:54.Oldham. John Gregory said this defe`t was

:18:55. > :19:05.his lowest point as Crawley manager since taking charge in Decelber

:19:06. > :19:08.At the top, Swindon move up to eighth, but they're still a long way

:19:09. > :19:11.off the last play`off place. Crawley sit mid`table with games in hand.

:19:12. > :19:14.Bristol City are 15th, still five points above the relegation places.

:19:15. > :19:17.Hopefully, safety will be assured sooner rather than later. Bristol

:19:18. > :19:20.City, they have to be more ruthless, Steve Cotterill was saying `t the

:19:21. > :19:24.weekend. What do you think, Guy Definitely. They have only had three

:19:25. > :19:27.major strikers this year. Thomas, Baldock and Wagstaff getting six

:19:28. > :19:31.goals at the end of that, they have to score from more areas. Swindon,

:19:32. > :19:36.they moved up, but play`off, any chance? It was a big result at the

:19:37. > :19:40.weekend against Preston. Th`t will give them belief. It will bd a

:19:41. > :19:44.difficult one. On the subject of Bristol City, Wade Elliott hs going

:19:45. > :19:47.to join us here next week. It is back to League Two now.

:19:48. > :19:51.Highlights in a moment as Oxford go to Southend. First, Plymouth ` what

:19:52. > :19:54.a change of fortunes for Argyll 16 points from 24, they are back

:19:55. > :19:57.outside the play`off places but only on goal difference after a draw at

:19:58. > :19:59.Accrington, so, Guy, are thdy going to get themselves back into that top

:20:00. > :20:08.seven? I think so. I can see it happening.

:20:09. > :20:11.He has created a good squad there, with good lads, and they ard a

:20:12. > :20:15.hard`working bunch. The way they are as a unit, they are solid, `nd

:20:16. > :20:19.dropping out of the play`off area will get them back into it. Reuben

:20:20. > :20:23.Reid on target there. John Sheridan furious with his side with the late

:20:24. > :20:27.goal they gave away. It's what he said afterwards: "Have we got no

:20:28. > :20:32.leaders on the pitch or what? I have a bunch of mutes on the pitch. We

:20:33. > :20:40.are not defending, the goal we conceded, that goal, was a joke "

:20:41. > :20:45.What's going on? He knows what he is doing. He is trying to get the

:20:46. > :20:48.leaders within the dressing room to get on the pitch and start talking

:20:49. > :20:51.more. It is clever movement from him. I disagree. Managers nowadays,

:20:52. > :20:53.top managers, they keep it `ll in`house. They don't publicly come

:20:54. > :20:57.out and slaughter their plaxers so I disagree. Although he is ` good

:20:58. > :21:00.manager, I wouldn't have done that. OK. For our Monday match highlights,

:21:01. > :21:05.Oxford at Southend, and what a topsy`turvy three days leadhng up to

:21:06. > :21:08.this game. Back to Friday nhght a precious 1`0 win for Oxford which

:21:09. > :21:12.was the last under the management of Nicky Lewis. The goal against

:21:13. > :21:18.Hartlepool, scored by David Connolly. The weekend drama was

:21:19. > :21:23.beginning for with Gary Waddock named head coach. He's been unveiled

:21:24. > :21:27.to the press today. He has plenty of experience as well. He leavds MK

:21:28. > :21:34.Dons to take up the post, btt he's managed QPR, Aldershot and Wycombe

:21:35. > :21:38.in the past. We will tweak one or two things. I won't dismantle

:21:39. > :21:42.everything, that's for sure. I will look at the players that ard here

:21:43. > :21:45.within the squad, I have to give them every opportunity to ilpress.

:21:46. > :21:48.They will get that. And I'm looking forward to working with thel. And
