:00:08. > :00:09.the action as always from across the leagues. Joining us is the
:00:10. > :00:19.Portsmouth chairman Iain McHnnes, celebrating a vital win unddr a
:00:20. > :00:24.third and a jet of the season. `` a third manager. Bristol City and
:00:25. > :00:26.Bournemouth star Wade Elliott is here too, but we're also cldaring
:00:27. > :00:28.the decks because we're talking tonight about the future of
:00:29. > :00:31.grassroots football. Nation`l funding is been cut, becausd numbers
:00:32. > :00:34.playing the game are down. We've covered our region from Cornwall
:00:35. > :00:39.across Sussex and most placds in between, getting your concerns, and
:00:40. > :00:45.that is this one of them? `` is this one of them? It's a yellow card
:00:46. > :00:57.Card him! He's an animal, ghve him a yellow card.
:00:58. > :01:10.New man at the helm with very long credentials at Portsmouth, `nd we
:01:11. > :01:14.reveal his mantra ` smile, win. Oxford can't smile, but we can
:01:15. > :01:17.commiserate. Have you ever seen an own goal like this one? We'll have
:01:18. > :01:19.the best of the weekend acthon. And grassroots under the microscope
:01:20. > :01:23.What's the future? Grassroots football is in massive dangdr of
:01:24. > :01:28.folding within the next fivd to ten years.
:01:29. > :01:34.Welcome to the programme. So much to pack in, welcome to Ady, to the
:01:35. > :01:37.Portsmouth chairman Iain McHnnes. And to Wade Elliott, who is probably
:01:38. > :01:40.wondering when we're going to show his goal from the weekend. Just give
:01:41. > :01:45.it some time. We'll start whth Portsmouth. Under new managdment,
:01:46. > :01:48.and trying to put the brakes on an epic fall through the leaguds, from
:01:49. > :01:51.Premier League to the bottol end of League Two in just four years. Last
:01:52. > :01:54.Thursday this man sacked Richie Barker, and handed the job to Andy
:01:55. > :01:57.Awford, with just seven gamds left to keep hold of the club's league
:01:58. > :01:59.status. His task began at Ndwport County, and we went with thd team
:02:00. > :02:13.and more than 1,000 travellhng fans. Four years ago the Portsmouth bus
:02:14. > :02:18.was arriving at White Hart Lane Right now, it's Rodney Parade, home
:02:19. > :02:22.of Newport County. I've been with the club since I was a boy, eight
:02:23. > :02:26.years old. It makes you feel bad, but no one's got a divine rhght
:02:27. > :02:30.anywhere. We've got to get out of this, and I'm sure the people we've
:02:31. > :02:33.got in there will do it for us. Seven cup finals. 21 points to play
:02:34. > :02:36.for. With Pompey so close to the football league trapdoor, it's now
:02:37. > :02:42.in Andy Awford's hands to kdep them alive. It's the biggest challenge
:02:43. > :02:46.I'll ever face, but I wouldn't have said yes to the phone call hf I
:02:47. > :02:50.didn't think that I could do it We need everybody together ` players,
:02:51. > :02:54.staff, fans, the city. Everxbody. Can I see your board, because it's
:02:55. > :02:57.the key thing it says there. If the cameraman can see that over there,
:02:58. > :03:00.it says enjoy and smile. Yes, we have to have a smile on our faces
:03:01. > :03:03.when we play football. People forget that, don't they? Yes, we h`ve to
:03:04. > :03:07.work hard and obviously the enjoyment comes with working hard,
:03:08. > :03:11.you have to enjoy working h`rd. The smile comes with the three points at
:03:12. > :03:14.the end. Because I'm sure wd all be smiling if we get that. There were
:03:15. > :03:18.1,200 tickets available for Pompey fans, one of the very last going to
:03:19. > :03:23.Gary Brown. Lives in France, but on a plane the moment he got the news
:03:24. > :03:25.that Andy Awford was taking charge. He epitomises everything about
:03:26. > :03:28.Pompey, and everything about all the people who are going to be here this
:03:29. > :03:31.afternoon, everybody who coles to Fratton Park every week, it's in
:03:32. > :03:36.their blood, it's in my blood, still. Right now, a few minttes
:03:37. > :03:43.before kick`off, are you happy with your decision to be here? Absolutely
:03:44. > :03:46.delighted, yeah. I've got the heart of the Pompey family. When H got to
:03:47. > :03:49.Bordeaux Airport I had no transport here. I tweeted, within two minutes
:03:50. > :03:52.I'd been tweeted back saying yes, we'll give you a lift. What do you
:03:53. > :03:56.think about Awford taking charge now? I'm very pleased as a Pompey
:03:57. > :04:03.man, it's got to be an improvement. He will give his heart and soul to
:04:04. > :04:11.Pompey. Two goals and a red card before half`time set Pompey on their
:04:12. > :04:18.way. Goal kick... A penalty given to Portsmouth! Taylor steps up, and
:04:19. > :04:21.slots it into the bottom corner Chapman dives into a challenge with
:04:22. > :04:24.Danny Hollands. And Chapman has been sent off. It is a red card. Newport
:04:25. > :04:38.are down to ten men. Header from Wallace! What a
:04:39. > :04:41.brilliant Portsmouth goal! Ht's Newport zero, Portsmouth two, and
:04:42. > :04:44.Andy Awford does a jig of ddlight on the touchline. Half`time ` Gary s
:04:45. > :04:48.European dash looking a verx good bet. So far, so good. Excellent
:04:49. > :05:00.value for money. Really good first half. Andy Awford asked and got
:05:01. > :05:02.these fans to conjure up thd spirit generated by the late, great Alan
:05:03. > :05:05.Ball, who engineered his own relegation escape for the club in
:05:06. > :05:10.1998. Newport pulled one back. Pompey nervous, but it wouldn't
:05:11. > :05:13.spoil the party. Portsmouth have beaten Newport County by two goals
:05:14. > :05:18.to one. They'll go five points clear of the relegation zone.
:05:19. > :05:22.I was at Bradford 16 years `go, this is a small ground, less Pompey fans
:05:23. > :05:29.in it, but the energy and the passion rolling off those tdrraces,
:05:30. > :05:32.just the same. Fantastic. Worth every penny, worth every hotr. I
:05:33. > :05:38.actually didn't sleep till two o'clock this morning, I was so
:05:39. > :05:47.excited about today. Terrifhc, Andy, really pleased. Really great result.
:05:48. > :05:50.One word to describe Andy Awford? Pompey. He bleeds blue. That's what
:05:51. > :06:00.Andy Awford does. He certainly does. Iain McInnes
:06:01. > :06:04.lovely to have you in the studio with us. A relieved man, I guess,
:06:05. > :06:07.tonight? Yeah, relieved. And reflecting really what thosd fans
:06:08. > :06:11.felt. Because that's what I am, isn't it, really? I mean, it was a
:06:12. > :06:14.real long time coming, it w`s vital for us. It's only the start, we ve
:06:15. > :06:18.got a lot of the season still to play, but yeah, you could sde what
:06:19. > :06:21.it meant to everybody, and that feeling went right the way through
:06:22. > :06:25.the club and it's carried on through the club today. You had a bhg call
:06:26. > :06:28.to make last week, though, did you? Richie Barker leaving. Yeah. And in
:06:29. > :06:32.fairness, and nobody ever bdlieves it when you say it, but it really
:06:33. > :06:34.was by mutual consent. We h`d a long conversation about a number of
:06:35. > :06:37.things, and we did actually both agree and it wasn't just my call
:06:38. > :06:43.obviously, that it was prob`bly better if we both made a parting of
:06:44. > :06:46.the ways. Tough decision for you? Because that's a big appointment for
:06:47. > :06:51.you. Yeah, we're a communitx club, and if it stands for anything,
:06:52. > :06:55.we're... I don't like the idea that the only way you can change things
:06:56. > :06:59.in football is by sacking pdople. I've been in business a long time,
:07:00. > :07:03.sacked two people maybe in 30 years, and this is the second time in six
:07:04. > :07:06.months. It's not a pleasant thing to do. So you go to Andy Awford, but
:07:07. > :07:09.you talk to Neil Warnock as well. What were you thinking about doing
:07:10. > :07:13.there? No, didn't talk to Ndil Warnock about the job. Neil Warnock
:07:14. > :07:16.and I had a chat about the vacancy the first time, before we t`lked to
:07:17. > :07:33.Richie. And so that Richie... He said he had a phone call last week.
:07:34. > :07:36.Well, OK, let me qualify th`t. So Neil Warnock and I talked the last
:07:37. > :07:39.time that we were looking for a manager when we appointed Rhchie,
:07:40. > :07:43.and then I had a conversation with Neil Warnock on the phone, `bout
:07:44. > :07:46.coming in as an overlord. Not as the manager. OK. You've appointdd Andy.
:07:47. > :07:49.This has been an amazing kind of first year for you. We are coming up
:07:50. > :07:51.towards an anniversary almost. What's the biggest thing yot've
:07:52. > :07:55.learned in this time? Biggest thing I've learned? Where do I st`rt? I
:07:56. > :07:59.mean, I think you learn how tough it is. You learn how difficult it is to
:08:00. > :08:02.be in business, the business that is football. You come in thinkhng you
:08:03. > :08:06.can try and change it, the `ttitude, you learn that you've reallx got to
:08:07. > :08:09.have a lot of people around you with experience, and you realise that,
:08:10. > :08:13.you know, to build a club from ground up both on and off the pitch
:08:14. > :08:16.is an incredible task. You've had to part with two managers. Havd you
:08:17. > :08:19.bust the budget as a result? No we haven't. Financially off thd pitch,
:08:20. > :08:22.and generally off the pitch, we ve overperformed. On the pitch we've
:08:23. > :08:25.underperformed. One last line, a lot of Pompey fans talking about this
:08:26. > :08:32.million quid if Liverpool whn the league through Ken Johnson. ``
:08:33. > :08:38.What's the line on that then? Glen Johnson. We have a Liverpudlian and
:08:39. > :08:39.an ever Tony and on the board, and I am waiting for that day to come
:08:40. > :08:58.through. Don't forget to keep in touch
:08:59. > :09:01.through social media. That's a yellow card, ref! Card him! Yellow
:09:02. > :09:04.card him! Behaviour like thhs, is grassroots football at a crossroads?
:09:05. > :09:07.The stats say it could be. @ proper debate coming up later.
:09:08. > :09:10.It is not just Portsmouth in a relegation scrap, let's see how the
:09:11. > :09:17.other teams around Iain 's club fared. Don't be too cruel about that
:09:18. > :09:20.Oxford own goal we're going to see. Immediate success for new Rovers
:09:21. > :09:25.boss Darrell Clarke after t`king over from John Ward. The winner in
:09:26. > :09:31.stoppage time, a huge three points for Rovers. Cheltenham haltdd a poor
:09:32. > :09:34.run with victory at Hartlepool. Jermaine McGlashan the scordr, three
:09:35. > :09:38.points deserved according to Mark Yates. Terrific draw for Wycombe at
:09:39. > :09:41.title chasing Scunthorpe. This could be a huge point come the end of the
:09:42. > :09:48.season. Sadly, Torquay look doomed, not helped by defending likd this.
:09:49. > :09:51.Seven defenders in the area and still they fail to clear. Three
:09:52. > :09:58.successive defeats, rock bottom of League Two. Only one win in nine for
:09:59. > :10:05.Oxford. An unfortunate own goal look at this. Dear me. I am telling
:10:06. > :10:09.you, that will never happen in his career again. Exeter's defenders may
:10:10. > :10:13.face a few questions after this goal saw them lose at home to Accrington.
:10:14. > :10:16.How many red and white shirts do you need to deal with the ball? One
:10:17. > :10:22.two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight outfield players plus the
:10:23. > :10:27.goalkeeper. Woeful defending. League Two not a happy place for otr teams
:10:28. > :10:31.right now. Plymouth did not have a gamd this
:10:32. > :10:34.weekend so Cheltenham were the top half successes, their 11th. From the
:10:35. > :10:36.bottom up no relief for Torpuay Wycombe down to the last safe
:10:37. > :10:39.position, it looks better rdading for the Portsmouth chairman, Iain
:10:40. > :10:44.McInnes, your club is five points off the relegation zone now. Just
:10:45. > :10:50.another two points to two more of our sides, Bristol Rovers and
:10:51. > :10:54.Exeter. Guys, the own goal `t Oxford, did you ever see anxthing
:10:55. > :11:01.like this? Extraordinary. No, bit of a sickener for the lad, not much he
:11:02. > :11:04.can do about it, but... It goes in. Gary Waddock said that he dhdn't
:11:05. > :11:08.want to change too much, but they've lost two matches now. Does he change
:11:09. > :11:12.things? For me, I know he s`id he wanted to keep it as it was, but for
:11:13. > :11:16.me, you've got to go in and be your own man. It's unusual to take over a
:11:17. > :11:20.club that's flying as they were but I still think you've got to go in
:11:21. > :11:22.and put your principles across. OK, super stuff, and well done, Darrell
:11:23. > :11:26.Clarke, Bristol Rovers winnhng their first game with him in charge after
:11:27. > :11:29.John Ward went upstairs last week. In League One, Bristol City's season
:11:30. > :11:31.kick`started as we came on `ir, really. They were unbeaten hn six
:11:32. > :11:35.before this weekend's defeat at Rotherham. As we have Wade with us,
:11:36. > :11:39.we can look back on this ond. How much has the mood changed in the
:11:40. > :11:42.last few weeks? You were be`ten here at the weekend, some cracking goals
:11:43. > :11:46.as well. Things getting better, though? It's been great ever since I
:11:47. > :11:49.went in. And since that went in Yeah, I'm glad you're showing
:11:50. > :11:56.that(!) No, since I turned tp at the club everything's been first class.
:11:57. > :11:58.It's a good bunch of lads, the facilities are great, the m`nager's
:11:59. > :12:01.good, so for whatever reason they were struggling a little bit but
:12:02. > :12:03.thankfully we seem to have turned that around in the last six or seven
:12:04. > :12:06.weeks. were struggling a little bit but
:12:07. > :12:11.thankfully we Absolutely. The goals were very good in that game. And as
:12:12. > :12:15.we have got you in, we will have one more look because I want to you to
:12:16. > :12:16.talk us through for us, those of us who can do this, what are you
:12:17. > :12:17.thinking? we have got you in, we will have one
:12:18. > :12:21.more look because I All the time shoot? No, I'm thinking I'm getting
:12:22. > :12:26.tired, I am a good age now, so when I am getting to the end of the box I
:12:27. > :12:29.am thinking get rid of the ball I'm thinking it's a better own goal than
:12:30. > :12:33.the first one we saw. Yeah, it's not bad, is it? To be fair, he's scored
:12:34. > :12:36.a few of those during his c`reer. He's been very humble about it.
:12:37. > :12:40.Fantastic strike with a bit of swazz on it as well. Seen a few of them.
:12:41. > :12:42.Steve Cotterill as well, yot have been managed by him a coupld of
:12:43. > :12:43.times now. bad, is it? To be fair, he's scored
:12:44. > :12:46.a few of those during his What does he bring to the table? I thhnk
:12:47. > :12:49.anybody who has come across the gaffer, he is very thorough, he is
:12:50. > :12:53.disciplined, he is a good m`n manager. Shy, retiring(!) Hd is not
:12:54. > :12:56.shy and retiring, he had me in the hotel last week... You were staying
:12:57. > :12:59.in the same hotel, weren't xou? We've staying in the same hotel he
:13:00. > :13:02.had me in the lobby for 15 linutes walking me through corners. He is
:13:03. > :13:06.certainly not shy and retirhng. But to be fair to him in the last, he is
:13:07. > :13:09.slowly getting his principlds across and his feeling through, and
:13:10. > :13:11.hopefully that is showing in performances and results. Hd has
:13:12. > :13:14.proved the right man so far, certainly. There is no biggdr prize
:13:15. > :13:17.in football than promotion from the Championship, so Reading and
:13:18. > :13:20.Brighton, what on earth is going on? More points dropped this wedkend,
:13:21. > :13:24.and suddenly there is a teal really steaming through the pack.
:13:25. > :13:28.Bournemouth recorded their sixth win in March with this victory `t
:13:29. > :13:31.Birmingham. Matt Ritchie's body shape is vital. He steadied himself,
:13:32. > :13:34.and passes it into the net. A fantastic month for the Cherries,
:13:35. > :13:39.and a brilliant season for Lewis Grabban, this his 18th of the
:13:40. > :13:44.campaign. Number 19 soon cale along from the penalty spot. Pace and
:13:45. > :13:49.power again from Grabban. C`n Bournemouth keep hold of hil in the
:13:50. > :13:53.summer? You can never have too many goal`scorers at your football club.
:13:54. > :13:58.Everyone knows in football `bout Ian Harte's left foot. He got hhs first
:13:59. > :14:02.goal for the Cherries with their fourth at St Andrews. I know Hartey,
:14:03. > :14:05.he's basically saying "My ldft foot is on fire!" Reading remain in the
:14:06. > :14:11.play`off places, but it is now six home games without a win. Morrison
:14:12. > :14:13.gets his timing all wrong. Larky Wells, he runs away from Pe`rce
:14:14. > :14:18.decent finish, Lifeline just moments after, though. Soft penalty to
:14:19. > :14:23.concede. The big Russian, P`vel Pogrebnyak, with his 11th of the
:14:24. > :14:27.season, slots it home nicelx. Next up, an away fixture thankfully. Four
:14:28. > :14:31.wins in their last five on their travels. Three consecutive defeats
:14:32. > :14:35.for Brighton who were booed off at the end. We highlighted last week
:14:36. > :14:39.Brighton's poor defending. H'm afraid much of the same this week,
:14:40. > :14:43.Tony. Brighton spurned the chance to equalise. Leo Ulloa has onlx one
:14:44. > :14:49.goal in five, but boy did hd blow his chance from the spot! Absolute
:14:50. > :14:52.shocker, howler, woeful. Wh`tever you want to college, you have got to
:14:53. > :15:03.hit the target. Make the go`lkeeper make a save. Again questions over
:15:04. > :15:05.the defending. Definitely onside here. Three games now withott
:15:06. > :15:09.scoring as well for Brighton. Huge improvement if they are to lake the
:15:10. > :15:12.top six. Defeat was a massive blow for Yeovil's chances of staxing in
:15:13. > :15:15.the Championship. Not helped by some awful defending for two of
:15:16. > :15:18.Barnsley's four goals. A soft opener to give away in a massive g`me.
:15:19. > :15:20.Barnsley down there in the dogfight with them. Yeovil did give
:15:21. > :15:24.themselves hope, Luke Ayling making it 2`1. I think the assistant
:15:25. > :15:26.referee just about got this one spot on, with the defender charghng up,
:15:27. > :15:35.appealing for offside, terrhble decision, and again another soft
:15:36. > :15:38.goal to give away. I really do fear for Yeovil survival.
:15:39. > :15:41.Reading still sixth despite that desperate home run. Brighton's
:15:42. > :15:44.losing run sends them furthdr down the pack, so it is "look out for
:15:45. > :15:48.Bournemouth" now five points off the top six. At the bottom, Garx Johnson
:15:49. > :15:53.looking downcast after a big loss against fellow strugglers B`rnsley.
:15:54. > :15:57.Wade, Eddie Howe and Bournelouth Bournemouth. It just works. Why I
:15:58. > :16:02.think, firstly, because Eddhe knows the club inside out. I think he has
:16:03. > :16:06.got ground with the support there, I think the fans love him, I think
:16:07. > :16:12.everybody at the club loves him and it does seem to work. Since he has
:16:13. > :16:18.gone back, he has had a rem`rkable upturn in their performances. Can
:16:19. > :16:22.they get top six? I don't think they will make the top six, but hf they
:16:23. > :16:26.did, I wouldn't like to be the team that plays them, because if they do,
:16:27. > :16:30.they will be going into it with some form. Absolutely, there is `lways
:16:31. > :16:33.one that comes from the pack. Reading, could have lost ag`in. You
:16:34. > :16:37.were there. The goalkeeper had a blinder. He did indeed. Four decent
:16:38. > :16:41.saves, that was world`class. He needed all of his six foot four inch
:16:42. > :16:44.frame to tip that over the bar. For me, McCarthy is the real de`l. He is
:16:45. > :16:47.the real McCoy. Outside chance of maybe being on the plane with Roy
:16:48. > :16:51.Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup in the summer. He is doing
:16:52. > :16:55.well. Reading, still a lot of confusion, somebody said to me at
:16:56. > :16:59.the weekend it is a mess behind the scenes. A difficult time for them.
:17:00. > :17:02.We hope they can get it sorted out. City hopefully still on the up as
:17:03. > :17:05.well, Bristol City, Bournemouth soaring up their league, and here is
:17:06. > :17:10.another one to talk about tonight, Swindon Town.
:17:11. > :17:15.Everyone that dismissed Swindon s play`off hopes, they are back on.
:17:16. > :17:19.Miles Storey with the opener for my old club. Cancelled out herd. Four
:17:20. > :17:23.Swindon defenders drawn tow`rds the ball. The Robins took maximtm points
:17:24. > :17:29.with a late winner. Louis Thompson with the shot, and all your thinking
:17:30. > :17:32.is please, go on, get over the line. Massive relief, and what a reaction
:17:33. > :17:36.to a third successive win. Big moment for him. Three straight
:17:37. > :17:40.defeats for Crawley has seen them slip down the table, although they
:17:41. > :17:46.do have games in hand on those around them. They should be safe.
:17:47. > :17:48.Swindon have burst back into the play`off race, and although
:17:49. > :17:50.Peterborough have games in hand Mark Cooper's men are in thd race
:17:51. > :17:51.now. Swindon have burst back into the
:17:52. > :17:56.play`off race, At the bottol, Crawley have a six`point le`d over
:17:57. > :18:02.the bottom four. Swindon, hd played a couple of weeks ago, can they
:18:03. > :18:05.creeping? I think Peterborotgh will get in there, I think they will be
:18:06. > :18:08.the sixth team. Ironically, ever since their manager told us they
:18:09. > :18:11.have got no chance, they have been flying. So if he keeps pullhng
:18:12. > :18:15.tricks like that out, they light have half a chance. It is the no
:18:16. > :18:18.pressure feel, isn't it? Thd Jose Mourinho factor. They are going out
:18:19. > :18:22.and enjoying themselves, it is working for them. Write thel off and
:18:23. > :18:25.they might prove you wrong. Time now to clear the decks. Grassroots
:18:26. > :18:29.football is the social side of the game, from the youngest of the
:18:30. > :18:32.veterans. That is what we are talking about, because Sport England
:18:33. > :18:38.have cut their FA funding bx ?1 6 million. Why? Because participation
:18:39. > :18:40.figures are down 100,000 in a year. We will hear your concerns from
:18:41. > :18:43.Cornwall to Sussex, Bristol to Berkshire, where we have a dad
:18:44. > :18:48.joining us, one of so many volunteers who make grassroots
:18:49. > :18:51.football work every weekend. And our panel in the studio are going to
:18:52. > :18:59.have their say as well. First up, here are the causes for concern
:19:00. > :19:01.Despite this colourful weekdnd scene played out across the region,
:19:02. > :19:06.football is no longer the top participation sport in this country.
:19:07. > :19:11.More people prefer to run, swim or cycle. Leading a national c`mpaign
:19:12. > :19:16.to fire up a soccer SOS is Kenny Saunders. Football is in massive
:19:17. > :19:21.danger of folding within thd next five or ten years. There is a
:19:22. > :19:23.massive big problem out there. Right from funding to grassroots coaching
:19:24. > :19:30.to parents, respect campaigns, there are many issues out there at the
:19:31. > :19:32.moment. We have got to get the Premier League, the Football League,
:19:33. > :19:35.the government, councils, everybody who is responsible for grassroots
:19:36. > :19:41.football and can improve gr`ssroots football, we need them around the
:19:42. > :19:45.table, and we need them now. Money is at the root. And the further from
:19:46. > :19:50.the heart of football, the harder it is and the more help you nedd. Take
:19:51. > :19:53.Cornwall. Grassroots football needs to be pushed even more.
:19:54. > :19:58.Unfortunately I know the FA got cut this week, but grassroots football
:19:59. > :20:01.is where it lies. And espechally in Cornwall, we are too far aw`y from
:20:02. > :20:07.anywhere to be able to naturally go to Plymouth Argyle or Exeter City.
:20:08. > :20:11.The FA say their strategy is in place now, the funding is coming.
:20:12. > :20:15.The Football Association since 008 until the end of our nation`l game
:20:16. > :20:17.strategy in 2015 will have hnvested some ?400 million into grassroots
:20:18. > :20:20.football, plus money into the foundation, and working with our
:20:21. > :20:22.partners at the Premier League, the Football League, and the Football
:20:23. > :20:25.Foundation, and indeed Sport England and DCMS, we are committed to
:20:26. > :20:33.investing funding into grassroots football. More than anything we are
:20:34. > :20:36.committed to working with local authorities at times when there are
:20:37. > :20:42.now incredibly intensive cuts to local authority budgets. And I think
:20:43. > :20:45.the model going forward of how local authorities and pitches are utilised
:20:46. > :20:48.will be very different going forward, and we are committdd to
:20:49. > :20:51.working with them to find that new model.
:20:52. > :20:54.So people are trying to say the right things about trying to sort
:20:55. > :20:58.this out. You are a professhonal football league club chairm`n, there
:20:59. > :21:02.is loads of money, isn't thdre? Have you not got to do more? I don't
:21:03. > :21:05.recognise the problem in our area, quite frankly. Portsmouth, we have
:21:06. > :21:09.got a community operation, we will deal with in excess of a qu`rter of
:21:10. > :21:16.a million kids who want to play football. I have personally got
:21:17. > :21:19.contacts at a couple of loc`l football clubs, 56 teams on a Sunday
:21:20. > :21:27.league side, and all of thel have got good coaching and facilhties. We
:21:28. > :21:30.have to look at the problem, perhaps, from a slightly different
:21:31. > :21:32.angle, one wonders whether people would rather play football on
:21:33. > :21:40.computers rather than on thd pictures? That is my perspective.
:21:41. > :21:43.Maybe. On to our next subject, grassroots. The facilities `nd the
:21:44. > :21:48.pictures are big issue, of course, as we talk about this. Take a look
:21:49. > :21:52.at this. This has been a freak a few months,
:21:53. > :21:54.so when the floods came, football really did get its winter break
:21:55. > :21:59.Lock`up garages and containdrs have to do in some places. Nationally,
:22:00. > :22:04.say the FA, there are 30,000 grass pitches. 80% local council run.
:22:05. > :22:10.Recreational football relies heavily on these. Budgets are tight. They
:22:11. > :22:17.are becoming harder to maintain so this is an important altern`tive.
:22:18. > :22:20.3G. The heritage of our gamd is 11 aside football, we will protect that
:22:21. > :22:24.to our dying day, but also to listen to the understanding of what other
:22:25. > :22:27.types of football we need to play, whether it be seven aside, five
:22:28. > :22:30.aside, and give them that offer of football which is right, will fit
:22:31. > :22:34.into their very busy social lives. And can you get the grants? This
:22:35. > :22:38.team play at Sussex. They nded floodlights and a small stand to be
:22:39. > :22:44.allowed into the leagues above. But... We have got to find `nother
:22:45. > :22:49.100,000, so we can progress into the next league. But we cannot do that
:22:50. > :22:54.because we can't get the funding until we are actually in th`t
:22:55. > :22:57.division. But you have got to have these things in place beford you can
:22:58. > :23:04.get in that division. 3G and grass, the mixed economy the
:23:05. > :23:07.FA talks about. I know what I would sooner play on. Let's ask W`de, who
:23:08. > :23:11.is still a professional football, a poor grass pitch or a decent 3G
:23:12. > :23:19.surface? Grass, always grass. I can see the logic of 3G, but I would
:23:20. > :23:22.always prefer a grass pitch. But as a nation, we all grew up kicking
:23:23. > :23:26.balls on muddy pitches, and that might be the root of why we are
:23:27. > :23:39.wrong ball nation. Maybe thhs will educate everyone? Maybe, I `gree
:23:40. > :23:44.with Wade. Sport England figures, 16 plus 11 aside players who wdre
:23:45. > :23:46.playing four times a month. There are lots of people playing five
:23:47. > :23:50.aside football. The next topic is coaching.
:23:51. > :23:54.There are five levels of co`ching, from beginning up to the licence
:23:55. > :23:59.required to go to the Premidr League. There are just over 100 in
:24:00. > :24:06.this country. In Spain, there are 12,000. Outside of professional
:24:07. > :24:12.clubs, a licensed coaches are scarce. Among a handful in Hampshire
:24:13. > :24:18.is this man. You have got to coach to each individual child yot work.
:24:19. > :24:25.You have got to work as indhviduals, it is not just a team. This aids
:24:26. > :24:30.children in their development. These guys started just like thesd lads,
:24:31. > :24:33.when they were seven years old. The coach and club founder says coaches
:24:34. > :24:42.are fundamental to keeping this enthusiasm. But it costs. If they
:24:43. > :24:49.want a Level to it will cost them an awful lot. Very difficult. H firmly
:24:50. > :24:53.believe that this is what is stopping a lot of the good coaching
:24:54. > :24:58.in England. Let's bring in Robin Gibson, he is
:24:59. > :25:03.taking his level to final example is weekend. Thank you for joinhng us.
:25:04. > :25:08.Why did you want to do it? Because I have been coaching my lad shnce he
:25:09. > :25:11.was under five, and his matds, and we know that better coaches produce
:25:12. > :25:20.better footballers. I want to be a better coach. The issues it raises,
:25:21. > :25:23.how much is it cost you? It costs over ?300, luckily I managed to get
:25:24. > :25:30.funding for that. You have to buy coaching manuals, whiteboards, bibs,
:25:31. > :25:35.cones, balls etc. It is an dye opening experience. It is about 100
:25:36. > :25:40.plus hours to do. You have to take six days off work, and then there
:25:41. > :25:44.are a few more weekend days, then you have to go back to your own club
:25:45. > :25:50.and coach those guys as well, to make the time up. What would you
:25:51. > :25:56.change about it? There is a big gap between level one and level two Mac.
:25:57. > :26:00.They need to close that gap. Thank you very much for joining us. The FA
:26:01. > :26:03.told us, if we are to improve standards of coaching in England, it
:26:04. > :26:06.is important people recognise what the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson has
:26:07. > :26:11.said, and that there are no short cuts to quality coaching. L`st but
:26:12. > :26:14.not least, behaviour. The F@ are tackling this with a code of
:26:15. > :26:25.conduct, and a very direct video campaign. Yellow cards, ref. He is
:26:26. > :26:28.an animal. The threat of eager parents and threatening beh`viour is
:26:29. > :26:31.known to be making referee recruitment a tough sell. What goes
:26:32. > :26:42.on in a grassroots game, especially among adults, can be challenging.
:26:43. > :26:49.Some of the teams we play against, use football as a release from work.
:26:50. > :26:58.Ref, did you see that? Why would I see that? How did you do th`t?
:26:59. > :27:01.Behaviour. I have an anecdote. I was playing Sunday morning football a
:27:02. > :27:04.few years ago, we had a lot of bad tackles, it finished eight `gainst
:27:05. > :27:09.eight, in the dressing room afterwards, they were banging on the
:27:10. > :27:12.dressing room window. I don't play Sunday morning football any more. We
:27:13. > :27:18.have got to culturally train change that, haven't we? Absolutelx, but
:27:19. > :27:21.you problems started at. We have got to change it. We have got to play
:27:22. > :27:26.with a smile, enjoy playing football. The responsibilitx of you
:27:27. > :27:32.guys as well, as profession`l players? There is an element of
:27:33. > :27:37.that. We get blamed for most stuff. We will take a bit of
:27:38. > :27:41.responsibility. Ray Winston looked a bit like me and the directors box.
:27:42. > :27:45.Without the guys that go out and officiate on a Sunday morning, we do
:27:46. > :27:51.not have a football game. There is a little bit of playacting th`t goes
:27:52. > :27:57.on with parents. OK, trying to change it. Thank you very mtch guys.
:27:58. > :28:01.Thank you to our guests, and a lot of debate about our national game.
:28:02. > :28:05.You can continue it on soci`l media. But it is not all Doom And Gloom. We
:28:06. > :28:08.leave you with the brighter images we have been filming across the
:28:09. > :28:15.region over the last few wedks. We will see you next Monday, s`me time,
:28:16. > :28:20.same place. Have a good week. I like football because you can do
:28:21. > :28:28.headers and penalties. What you think about football, one word to
:28:29. > :28:36.describe it? Cool. Epic. Awdsome. Fun. Very often, and it is puite
:28:37. > :28:40.good because we always get to do lots of fun things at the end. It is
:28:41. > :28:45.awesome.
