:00:43. > :00:46.Welcome to Match of the Day 2 and the first stellar Sunday

:00:47. > :00:57.Andy Murray's match continues on BBC One.

:00:58. > :01:00.And - as if they've never been away - joining me tonight

:01:01. > :01:03.are Danny Murphy and Jermaine Jenas in what is a pants-free zone -

:01:04. > :01:05.well not exactly, but you know what I mean.

:01:06. > :01:07.First up, last year's runners-up Arsenal take on Liverpool,

:01:08. > :01:11.This season, there's more cash than ever in the Premier League

:01:12. > :01:16.and both teams have made some big additions.

:01:17. > :01:20.Swiss international Granit Xhaka a ?30 million man -

:01:21. > :01:29.but since then it has all been pretty quiet.

:01:30. > :01:32.Liverpool looked closer to home - ?57 million for Southampton's Sadio

:01:33. > :01:36.Mane and the Geordies' Georginio Wijnaldum.

:01:37. > :01:39.However, Jurgen Klopp's shrewdest signings could be in defence,

:01:40. > :01:43.with Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan coming in from the Bundesliga.

:01:44. > :01:57.COMMENTATOR: Games don't get much bigger to begin

:01:58. > :02:02.with and there can't be any better incentive to kick off with the wind

:02:03. > :02:09.and taking three points and -- off top four and maybe title rivals.

:02:10. > :02:13.Arsenal have difficulties with their defence. An instant debut for Rob

:02:14. > :02:19.Holding, recruited from Bolton Wanderers. As the Deauville and

:02:20. > :02:22.Olivier Giroud are also absent after their Euros exploits. Sanchez is

:02:23. > :02:28.ready to lead the attack after winning the Cobra tag -- the Cobra

:02:29. > :02:36.America with Chile. Granit Xhaka is a substitute. There are debuts for

:02:37. > :02:40.Ragnar Klavan, Sadio Mane, whose first game for Southampton within a

:02:41. > :02:43.2-1 League Cup win two years ago. Milner and Sturridge had doubts

:02:44. > :02:45.about the fillers. Neither has managed to make the squad. -- they

:02:46. > :02:55.had doubts about their fitness. The Emirates Stadium looks

:02:56. > :03:03.absolutely resplendent with a newly laid pitch.

:03:04. > :03:18.A bright start by Arsenal in the bright North London son. -- sun. He

:03:19. > :03:24.felt his team-mate might have been impeded by Ramsey, although the

:03:25. > :03:30.referee didn't think that. It's a toe poked straight into the chest of

:03:31. > :03:33.Mignolet. A little interchange. Between Alexis Sanchez and Aaron

:03:34. > :03:36.Ramsey, typical of the way Arsenal have started the game. The time of

:03:37. > :03:39.year when everybody makes their predictions for who will win the

:03:40. > :03:47.title, who might manage to finish in the top four. Not too many have

:03:48. > :03:48.really mentioned Arsenal as genuine title contenders, although they are

:03:49. > :04:04.sure to be up there, or thereabouts. Henderson nudges it along the line

:04:05. > :04:12.to Clyne. I shot on target. Ripped along the turf, but it was

:04:13. > :04:22.reasonably routine save for Jack. The New England boss is busy, he was

:04:23. > :04:26.at Manchester yesterday. Walcott couldn't get back to his feet in

:04:27. > :04:33.time but Moreno has given the ball away, to Iwobi, to Ramsey.

:04:34. > :04:39.A miscue from Henderson in trying to get it clear. Moreno in on Walcott

:04:40. > :04:47.and the flag is being waved under penalty has been given. He went over

:04:48. > :04:51.the top of the ball, Moreno. Just isn't clean enough, in the way he

:04:52. > :05:00.went in. He takes Walcott after getting the ball. He gets a yellow

:05:01. > :05:04.card as well. Theo Walcott scored in both of Arsenal's final two

:05:05. > :05:13.pre-season games. How about now, when it really matters?

:05:14. > :05:20.Walcott denied by Mignolet. It's a flying save by the Belgian. Just

:05:21. > :05:28.left hanging in the air nicely enough for him to be able to get

:05:29. > :05:29.there and save it. Not tucked into the corner enough, either. It's not

:05:30. > :05:41.a great penalty from Walcott. Bellerin can't go any further. A

:05:42. > :05:45.great challenge on Lallana by Coquelin. Another chance for

:05:46. > :06:01.Walcott. He takes this one. It's a relieved Theo Walcott. It's

:06:02. > :06:08.an ecstatic Emirates Stadium. No need to score. -- no need to score

:06:09. > :06:10.the straight ones from 12 yards, when you can put them in as

:06:11. > :06:16.accurately as that from an ankle. Really good finish from Theo Walcott

:06:17. > :06:21.-- from Theo Walcott. Jurgen Klopp will want his team to have a spell

:06:22. > :06:27.on the ball, to settle themselves. There is a mistake on cue from

:06:28. > :06:32.Chambers, given away to Firmino. That's why now button and it's saved

:06:33. > :06:39.by Cech. -- that was Wijnaldum. Chambers apologises. It hasn't cost

:06:40. > :06:44.him or his team. Just too casual, too measured maybe, in trying to

:06:45. > :06:49.find Elneny, led by Firmino. Maybe the shot was a little too measured

:06:50. > :06:51.as well from Wijnaldum. Two minutes added onto the end of this first

:06:52. > :07:07.half. Coutinho was forced off balance,

:07:08. > :07:15.holding up too close to him. Liverpool fashion chance at

:07:16. > :07:21.levelling things up -- can Liverpool fashion a chance at levelling things

:07:22. > :07:26.up? Coutinho, it's a cracker, absolutely brilliant from the

:07:27. > :07:32.Brazilian! We heard Petr Cech barking out orders to his defenders.

:07:33. > :07:37.But it would have taken a pretty special wall to have kept that one

:07:38. > :07:41.out. It's a band over the wall and it's right into the top corner, the

:07:42. > :07:46.one place Cech was never going to reach it -- it is up and over the

:07:47. > :07:52.wall. The power and the position as well. Liverpool level, hopes all

:07:53. > :07:57.round. Arsenal don't feel it was enough of hope from Holding to

:07:58. > :08:18.warrant a free kick in the first place.

:08:19. > :08:30.Here's Wijnaldum. It's a nice check back. He is Lallana, and Lallana has

:08:31. > :08:34.squeezed it in. One at the end of the first half, one at the beginning

:08:35. > :08:39.of the second Ford Jurgen Klopp's Reds. We are getting used to seeing

:08:40. > :08:46.him losing his spectacles. Liverpool have turned things around.

:08:47. > :08:54.It's lovely passing. Good awareness from Wijnaldum. He sees Lallana

:08:55. > :09:00.coming. He kept his bearings about him, knew where the goal was and

:09:01. > :09:07.knew how to beat Cech to find it. Arsenal one, Liverpool two.

:09:08. > :09:13.Liverpool are bossing the ball. From being a goal down, they are now

:09:14. > :09:22.bossing the game. Wijnaldum to Clyne. Clyne just increases the pace

:09:23. > :09:29.with a run at Monreal and it's turned into three by Coutinho. What

:09:30. > :09:33.a goal from Liverpool! Knocked it about from side to side and back to

:09:34. > :09:39.front, and then Clyne decided to step on it, take the initiative.

:09:40. > :09:43.That is a sumptuous goal. And brilliantly finished by Coutinho,

:09:44. > :09:52.for his second goal of the day. Arsenal one, Liverpool three. For

:09:53. > :09:54.all the new signings, Phillippe Coutinho looks as though he will be

:09:55. > :10:08.Liverpool's key man this season. Firmino is trying to sidestep

:10:09. > :10:12.Chambers, who won't get out of his way lightly. Coutinho's shot is

:10:13. > :10:19.smothered and its bundled wide in the end. By Adam Lallana. It was so

:10:20. > :10:24.very nearly four. It's got jeers booming down onto the field from the

:10:25. > :10:26.Arsenal fans. Now it looks like they've missed Laurent Koscielny

:10:27. > :10:47.hugely today. Here's Mane. Mane brushes Chambers

:10:48. > :10:54.aside and scores Liverpool's fourth! What a performance from Liverpool.

:10:55. > :11:02.Sadio Mane with another cracking goal. Now there's not just

:11:03. > :11:06.discontent from the Arsenal fans, it's just plain brewing, and it's

:11:07. > :11:13.loud. Jurgen Klopp can scarcely contain his delight at what he has

:11:14. > :11:17.seen from his side since just before half-time -- booing. It's Mane

:11:18. > :11:22.showing great pace, too strong, too sharp for Chambers. Monreal didn't

:11:23. > :11:25.know where he was and there was nothing Cech or Holding could do

:11:26. > :11:31.about that. This will be headline news. Arsenal one, Liverpool four,

:11:32. > :11:33.and quite a few Arsenal fans are heading for home already as

:11:34. > :11:41.Oxlade-Chamberlain gets them back into the game, perhaps. All his own

:11:42. > :11:44.work. Goals reining in at the Emirates. There's nothing on for

:11:45. > :11:48.Oxlade-Chamberlain but in a flash he is between two, he has passed

:11:49. > :11:54.another two, and there's a little deflection that takes that away from

:11:55. > :11:57.Mignolet's hands. Arsenal two, Liverpool four. Well, it was billed

:11:58. > :12:06.as a game at the weekend. I think it's lived up to it!

:12:07. > :12:30.It will be a Santi Cazorla cross. He's put it into the right place and

:12:31. > :12:36.its thing. Calum Chambers got something on it. -- it is in.

:12:37. > :12:43.Arsenal really do have something to chase now. It's a thrill a minute

:12:44. > :12:49.ride to kick off campaign at the Emirates. Who did get the final

:12:50. > :12:59.touch? Chambers was telling is all that he did. And he did. Just adding

:13:00. > :13:04.to the pace of the cross, which was terrific from Santi Cazorla. It's

:13:05. > :13:08.now Arsenal three, Liverpool four. What a change in mood around the

:13:09. > :13:16.ground, from you don't know what you're doing. Haven't heard a think

:13:17. > :13:25.you do know what you're doing! -- I haven't heard a proud thing, you do

:13:26. > :13:32.know what you are doing! -- crowd sing. Oxlade-Chamberlain is waiting

:13:33. > :13:40.for the ball. Incomes Wijnaldum. Now Roberto Firmino. Came off and

:13:41. > :13:48.Arsenal need, went into the side of Cech's goal. He senses the game is

:13:49. > :13:51.up for his team today. A spirited fightback, but it was that Liverpool

:13:52. > :13:57.blitz which has seen them win the game. What a game, what a way to

:13:58. > :14:02.start the Premier League season at the Emirates Stadium. I think we got

:14:03. > :14:03.what we expected at the end of this today. Liverpool have got a massive

:14:04. > :14:16.three points. Was that how you expected it to go?

:14:17. > :14:23.Exactly! I could not dream in my wildest dreams that I would be

:14:24. > :14:28.saying that we could concede three and, normally when you concede three

:14:29. > :14:35.goals at Arsenal, you will lose. It was a game of two halves. We had a

:14:36. > :14:41.good first half and we were unlucky to be 1-1 at half-time. After the

:14:42. > :14:46.first half I think we made a massive mistake on the second goal and after

:14:47. > :14:52.you could see that we had shock and we lacked experience at the back.

:14:53. > :14:57.Yes, we need the wonderful strike, may be the first goal of the season

:14:58. > :15:01.was the goal of the season. And at half-time we could change a lot of

:15:02. > :15:06.things and after half-time, we came out and scored crazy goals. It is

:15:07. > :15:11.not allowed that a manager celebrates a goal like this, but I

:15:12. > :15:15.was on my way before I could stop it. It's the first game for me in

:15:16. > :15:19.the season, and I won't do it again that early in a game, but in this

:15:20. > :15:26.moment you could see something changed. We have a good fight back,

:15:27. > :15:30.and this team is mentally strong and determined to fight, and we showed

:15:31. > :15:35.that again today. Was there a worry when there was only one goal in it?

:15:36. > :15:39.We're always confident as a team even if we go 1-0 down, that's what

:15:40. > :15:45.the manager has driven into us, that never say die attitude. No matter

:15:46. > :15:48.what moment we are in the game, level, down, we stay strong and we

:15:49. > :15:53.got together in the end we saw the game out. Very nervy for Liverpool

:15:54. > :15:59.at the end, and it was only their second away win at Arsenal in 16

:16:00. > :16:04.years, incredibly, I think Danny was part of the last one to do it. But

:16:05. > :16:08.what a game from your old side. Incredible. I was fearful up until

:16:09. > :16:13.the 44th minute. We did not start the game well. But the speed, the

:16:14. > :16:18.intensity and creativity they showed in the second half was so promising

:16:19. > :16:21.and it reminded me of a couple of performances last season when they

:16:22. > :16:27.went to Chelsea and Manchester city and played ever so well. The trick

:16:28. > :16:31.now is to do it more consistently, because when they play like that,

:16:32. > :16:36.it's sensational. For the Arsenal fans, is that the realisation of

:16:37. > :16:41.their concerns? The lack of options at centre-half and a quality

:16:42. > :16:47.striker? I go with what Danny ger said. In the first half, I thought

:16:48. > :16:53.they looked OK. -- Danny just said. It would be easy to sit here and

:16:54. > :16:56.criticise the defence. There was a lot of inexperience at the back,

:16:57. > :17:00.yes, but they are two very young centre halves coming into a tough

:17:01. > :17:05.game against a good Liverpool side and they are going to get better. In

:17:06. > :17:10.the central defensive area, you need partnerships and it needs time to

:17:11. > :17:13.grow. They are chucked in, brand-new as a partnership, and they

:17:14. > :17:18.struggled, but everybody knew it was going to be a tough game for them.

:17:19. > :17:22.They tried to come back, but in the end, it was too much. Despite the

:17:23. > :17:26.scoreline, it's easy to forget that Arsenal have a much better of the

:17:27. > :17:31.first half, and you saw a game plan from the hosts. There was an obvious

:17:32. > :17:34.game plan. We all thought Liverpool would be all over Arsenal, trying to

:17:35. > :17:39.press them and we know Jurgen Klopp likes that. Arsenal did it well to

:17:40. > :17:43.Liverpool early in the game. There was an obvious intensity in the play

:17:44. > :17:46.and closing down, and they were at it. I like to see that in the

:17:47. > :17:49.opening game of the season. You want to be on the front foot. They showed

:17:50. > :17:55.good energy and desire to win the ball back. In Arsene Wenger's

:17:56. > :18:00.interview, he said they could not continue that intensity in the

:18:01. > :18:02.second half which, OK, maybe it's understandable, but when they do

:18:03. > :18:06.this they are a really good side. They play on the front foot, they

:18:07. > :18:10.get after you and keep the ball away from the back four and may keep

:18:11. > :18:14.winning the ball back, time and time again. Look at the desire from Theo

:18:15. > :18:19.Walcott, taking the ball from Wijnaldum. Everyone of them, to a

:18:20. > :18:23.man, they were all at it in the first 35 and 40 minutes. Yes,

:18:24. > :18:28.Liverpool made some mistakes, but because of the high press, and that

:18:29. > :18:34.time was Mignolet giving Henderson a silly ball, and they got the

:18:35. > :18:37.rewards. Six men all in the final third, all trying to score a goal.

:18:38. > :18:43.Liverpool win it back, but they don't switch off, watch this tackle

:18:44. > :18:47.from Coquelin. Not sure where Moreno is going, but Walcott after missing

:18:48. > :18:51.a penalty smashes it into the bottom corner and at that point I thought

:18:52. > :18:54.Liverpool did well to hang on. Very much playing the Liverpool wafer

:18:55. > :18:58.Arsenal, but did we see a shift in momentum in the equaliser it was a

:18:59. > :19:07.magical moment from Philippe Coutinho. We did. But Liverpool were

:19:08. > :19:11.not really at it. When you have a magician in your side like Philippe

:19:12. > :19:16.Coutinho you have a chance and we could watch this free kick over and

:19:17. > :19:20.over again. It was sublime. That is where the game changed, from a

:19:21. > :19:22.mentality point of view for Liverpool and Arsenal and for

:19:23. > :19:26.momentum. Liverpool took the goal and took it into the second half.

:19:27. > :19:30.Arsene Wenger said it was a game of two halves and there was a different

:19:31. > :19:35.contest altogether in the second half, but why was that? I listen to

:19:36. > :19:40.Adam Lallana's comments after the game and he said that there were

:19:41. > :19:43.words had with each other in the second half and they realised they

:19:44. > :19:47.did not live up to what they are capable of the first half and to

:19:48. > :19:51.change it. It was a matter of them saying, listen, we need more

:19:52. > :19:55.intensity in the game, get closer to players and we are better. You can

:19:56. > :20:03.see little want to touch is a flick around the corner from Coutinho.

:20:04. > :20:06.Then the finish from Adam Lallana, the 49th minute, that is what Jurgen

:20:07. > :20:12.Klopp would have wanted, get out there and get me a goal. Lovely pass

:20:13. > :20:17.into midfield, Wijnaldum involved again. There were 19 passes. A great

:20:18. > :20:20.team goal. A lovely ball from Nathaniel Clyne who cause a lot of

:20:21. > :20:25.problems down the right-hand side, and I know it comes off Coutinho's

:20:26. > :20:31.Shin, but lovely finish, good run, in the back of the net. Just a bit

:20:32. > :20:35.more determined to win the balls, and Mane was sensational throughout

:20:36. > :20:38.the whole game. The minute he picks the ball up there's only one place

:20:39. > :20:42.he is going, and when he puts it in the top corner, it was everything he

:20:43. > :20:45.deserved. He was the best player on the pitch throughout the game and is

:20:46. > :20:52.so hard to deal with. The most sprinting in the game. I think

:20:53. > :20:55.Jurgen Klopp regretted the celebration, but Liverpool follow --

:20:56. > :21:01.thoroughly deserved the victory. Is this a glimpse of what we can expect

:21:02. > :21:06.from Liverpool? I really hope so. When you think they have Sturridge

:21:07. > :21:10.to go back into it as well, it's exciting times. But I think we saw

:21:11. > :21:13.last season a few examples and I spoke about them early the brilliant

:21:14. > :21:19.Liverpool performance and they did not back it up. I remember them

:21:20. > :21:24.going to Watford and losing 3-0 the week after. It's about consistency.

:21:25. > :21:28.But they look, when they are on the front foot and go after teams, very,

:21:29. > :21:36.very dangerous and it's very promising for Liverpool supporters.

:21:37. > :21:39.For Arsenal, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey hobbling off, lots of booing

:21:40. > :21:43.from the fans and Arsene Wenger is starting on the back foot again.

:21:44. > :21:47.Players going down injured, and Ramsey had such a good campaign for

:21:48. > :21:50.Wales, to go off with a hamstring injury is so disappointing for him

:21:51. > :21:54.and the fans. I don't think it is to do with the Euros. I really don't.

:21:55. > :21:56.Bournemouth survived their inaugural season in the Premier League

:21:57. > :21:59.and will once again be looking to consolidate this time around.

:22:00. > :22:04.The small matter of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United.

:22:05. > :22:06.Jose has been The Busy One this summer.

:22:07. > :22:10.Pogba back for a world record fee, ?30 million for Eric Bailly and

:22:11. > :22:23.The Cherries are backing youth - Jordan Ibe and Brad Smith arriving

:22:24. > :22:26.from Anfield and Leeds' Lewis Cook among the new recruits.

:22:27. > :22:35.Jonathan Pearce was at the Vitality Stadium.

:22:36. > :22:45.And the end of the pier summertime special on the BBC, just like the

:22:46. > :22:48.old days. As Jose Mourinho begins his campaign to restore Manchester

:22:49. > :22:53.United's all supremacy, knowing all too well that a Bournemouth victory

:22:54. > :22:57.at Chelsea in December virtually sealed his fate there. Eddie Howe

:22:58. > :23:02.has told his team to have a real go at the United team. Jordan Ibe and

:23:03. > :23:06.Lewis Cook making their debuts. There are two United changes from

:23:07. > :23:11.the Community Shield, a rarer for Carrick, and Juan Mata falling down.

:23:12. > :23:14.The Spaniard has a lot to give, says Marino, although he is the most

:23:15. > :23:20.likely to suffer from the arrival of Paul Pogba. Ibrahimovic begins his

:23:21. > :23:27.quest for a debut title at a seventh club. Bournemouth are actually

:23:28. > :23:32.unbeaten at home in four meetings with Manchester United. They had

:23:33. > :23:36.that very famous cup victory under Harry Redknapp back in January 19

:23:37. > :23:43.84. Possibly the most famous date in the history of the club until their

:23:44. > :23:51.promotion success. Daniels. Sure, the torch was heavy. -- the touch

:23:52. > :23:56.was heavy. Good to see Callum Wilson back and fully fit after that

:23:57. > :23:59.horrible cruciate ligament injury he picked up last September. Jose

:24:00. > :24:03.Mourinho, unbeaten in seven Premier League opening games.

:24:04. > :24:20.Getting forward well and he will take on Charlie Daniels here.

:24:21. > :24:23.Manages to get the crossing, and Ibrahimovic is coming in. The

:24:24. > :24:32.referee gives a free kick against him. But he was aggressive in the

:24:33. > :24:35.air, and good work by Valencia, hanging across high. That is where

:24:36. > :24:43.Ibrahimovic scored from a Wembley last weekend. It rose, it hung, and

:24:44. > :24:48.then crunched. Eddie Howe's Bournemouth went through pre-season

:24:49. > :24:55.unbeaten, six games, three wins, three draws. Lovely take from one

:24:56. > :25:02.matter. Picks out Ibrahimovic -- from Mata. Interesting that Rooney

:25:03. > :25:07.and Ibrahimovic seem to be prepared to swap. Rooney, taking up a good

:25:08. > :25:13.position. Martial. Ibrahimovic lumbering up through the middle.

:25:14. > :25:17.Martial goes for goal. Did not have a good summer with France in the

:25:18. > :25:28.Euros and he flashed that one wide. 15 goals in his first campaign to

:25:29. > :25:33.Manchester United last season. Olly Murs in the crowd. Can Manchester

:25:34. > :25:41.United provide the X Factor neck -- this season? Valencia can pull it

:25:42. > :25:48.back. Mata to Rooney. Borage, keep looking for his first clean sheet in

:25:49. > :25:51.ten games, and he saved comfortably enough -- Boruc. The United

:25:52. > :25:55.hierarchy looking on. There is the man they are looking at to restore

:25:56. > :26:01.the glory days. Bournemouth have won four of their last ten opening

:26:02. > :26:05.games, and Manchester United have won 16 of their 24 Premier League

:26:06. > :26:12.openers. A joint record that, with Chelsea.

:26:13. > :26:26.That is sold short. Olly Murs is in. It bounces horribly, and Mata

:26:27. > :26:37.converts. -- Mata is in. Manchester United ahead with a huge slash of

:26:38. > :26:42.luck. The man who arrived, and Jose Mourinho says he can give him so

:26:43. > :26:47.much. He showed tenacity there and after it broke horribly Francis, he

:26:48. > :26:52.tapped it in. Last week he was rather humiliated at Wembley, but

:26:53. > :26:57.having been substituted as a substitute, real joy on his face

:26:58. > :27:07.here. Sir Bobby Charlton looking on, good to see him here. And looking so

:27:08. > :27:11.well. Memories of 1966 have been refreshed in recent weeks. One by

:27:12. > :27:20.Fellaini. Ibrahimovic looking for Rooney. Through the gap. And

:27:21. > :27:24.thwarted by Boruc, but another sign there could be a really strong to

:27:25. > :27:34.Dan -- understanding growing between Ibrahimovic and Rooney. Very good

:27:35. > :27:40.players tend to gel quite quickly. Given away again. Ibrahimovic,

:27:41. > :27:48.perfect weight on the ball to Rooney. Andrew Surman sends him

:27:49. > :27:50.down. He says it was a dive by Rooney. Andrew Surman pleads

:27:51. > :27:58.innocence, and from that angle there was nothing in it. Bournemouth need

:27:59. > :28:05.to make changes. Not showing enough here to suggest they can come back

:28:06. > :28:09.into the game with 58 minutes gone. Manchester United have certainly

:28:10. > :28:14.shown more determination as a group, more togetherness as a group. They

:28:15. > :28:23.showed the long periods of last season. Mata, good release and well

:28:24. > :28:29.timed. Valencia on the charge. Valencia still gets across in an

:28:30. > :28:36.Martial has scuffed it. Rooney! 2-0. A long way back for Bournemouth now.

:28:37. > :28:42.He has played very well. And he edges closer to Sir Bobby Charlton's

:28:43. > :28:49.record. One minute shy of the hour, Martial could not score, but Rooney

:28:50. > :28:55.certainly could. 247 goals for United. Classic header, back across

:28:56. > :28:58.the goalkeeper. End of the season, scoring against Bournemouth at home,

:28:59. > :29:09.start the league season with a goal against them. Pensive Bournemouth

:29:10. > :29:15.manager, and #4 Bournemouth. Wayne Rooney has won 155 of his hundred

:29:16. > :29:19.and 70 same -- hundred and 77 games for Manchester United when he has

:29:20. > :29:20.good. Martial on the half term. Running directly and clipped by

:29:21. > :29:33.Andrew Surman. Pitch by Surman, who couldn't get in

:29:34. > :29:36.-- couldn't let him get the shot way. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in

:29:37. > :29:41.the Community Shield Badge leak and very nearly scored again. Good save,

:29:42. > :29:48.big gap in the wall, Ben through it. Powerful right-handed save. A

:29:49. > :29:57.boisterous Man United following away as always. Martial coming into the

:29:58. > :30:01.game more now. Clipped by Ake, Manchester United going for the kill

:30:02. > :30:05.and a wonderful strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic puts Manchester United

:30:06. > :30:14.3-0 up and sounds a real warning to the Premier League. He scored on his

:30:15. > :30:18.league debut for Juventus into Barca and now Manchester United, he's won

:30:19. > :30:24.the title in his debut season for his last six clubs. He won the title

:30:25. > :30:30.with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, and he starts lead life under Jose

:30:31. > :30:34.Mourinho with a really good strike. -- he starts lead life. The Emperor

:30:35. > :30:38.strikes for the special one. This is the man who could add the Eric

:30:39. > :30:47.Cantona effect for Manchester United. Can Bournemouth's January

:30:48. > :30:53.signings return to the club, Afobe has signed for Wolves, turn this one

:30:54. > :31:00.around? Here is Grabban, his first touch. Couldn't clear his feet. Find

:31:01. > :31:07.Adam Smith. Oh, a terrific goal! That will do him the world of good.

:31:08. > :31:12.Suffered a really painful injury at the end of last season and missed

:31:13. > :31:16.the final two months. Worked his way back to fitness pre-season and he

:31:17. > :31:21.has worked Bournemouth back into this game with a lovely strike on

:31:22. > :31:25.his left foot, and banged it past the gate as Manchester United

:31:26. > :31:29.switched off to the displeasure of their manager. -- banged it past De

:31:30. > :31:36.Gea. Arter, really good pressure on him by Shaw, here is Cook. Francis

:31:37. > :31:38.is still full of running. Off Fellaini. Into the last minute of

:31:39. > :31:51.stoppage time. Taken short. Francis with the cross.

:31:52. > :31:57.Cook was in there. Driven by Surman. A splendid save by De Gea, a really

:31:58. > :32:03.good goalkeeper, unemployed for most of the game but still alert enough

:32:04. > :32:10.to protect Manchester United's goal. Here's the cross that comes in from

:32:11. > :32:15.Gradel. Back it comes out, Smith with the slam. Afobe challenges. It

:32:16. > :32:21.is loose. It's Gradel who saves the game. A late flurry. Gradel wins it

:32:22. > :32:35.back. Out by Herrera. Work for De Gea at the end, and he

:32:36. > :32:39.was alert enough to protect that goal, and ensure a really good

:32:40. > :32:42.opening victory here for Jose Mourinho.

:32:43. > :32:44.Where does this United squad stand at the moment compared to the other

:32:45. > :32:49.squads you at the moment compared to the other

:32:50. > :32:54.squads you have had at this stage? I met a sad squad in my first day, a

:32:55. > :33:00.squad not happy with their situation, not happy with the

:33:01. > :33:03.results, but I found immediately in the first training session a squad

:33:04. > :33:07.that wants to work, wants to improve, wants to win matches, wants

:33:08. > :33:16.to win titles, wants to be proud and make people proud of them, the Man

:33:17. > :33:19.United supporters. I thought it was an even game until the first goal.

:33:20. > :33:23.That was the key moment in the game, I thought. I thought we started

:33:24. > :33:27.brightly. We dominated the early possession stakes and looked

:33:28. > :33:34.comfortable. You can't Man United goals, which we did. How good with

:33:35. > :33:38.Zlatan Ibrahimovic? We knew before he joined the club he was one of the

:33:39. > :33:43.top players in the world and he has a big presence about him. He's going

:33:44. > :33:49.to be a great addition to our team. Could he's have the same effect on

:33:50. > :33:53.United that Cantona had all those years ago? This guy is a player we

:33:54. > :33:59.want to have basically for the next two seasons, but I think he can be

:34:00. > :34:02.phenomenal for the team, but I think also for the Premier League, he's

:34:03. > :34:07.the kind of player the Premier League has to be pleased to have. A

:34:08. > :34:11.winning start for Manchester United, never really got out of second gear

:34:12. > :34:15.at the Vitality Stadium but with its efficiency of the clinical nature in

:34:16. > :34:19.front of goal, it was very much in the style of Mourinho? They were

:34:20. > :34:23.well drilled, they did in the first 20 minutes sit back and let

:34:24. > :34:28.Bournemouth come at them a little bit and as the game went on, the

:34:29. > :34:31.quality shone through, the senior players, the better players, started

:34:32. > :34:37.controlling the game and there was some terrific performances. If you

:34:38. > :34:42.think they've got Mkhitaryan who was on the bench today, Pogba, it looks

:34:43. > :34:44.like good times a game for United. Did United get the rub of the green

:34:45. > :34:46.like good times a game for United. Did United get the rub of the green

:34:47. > :34:49.in terms of their goals? Definitely for the first one because at this

:34:50. > :34:54.stage there was not much in it, if I'm honest with you. It was on a

:34:55. > :35:01.knife edge, the game, and then that mistake from Simon Francis is what

:35:02. > :35:04.has turned it. It's two made stakes, unfortunately. Boruc comes out to

:35:05. > :35:09.try and clear it and it ricochets back off Francis and Mata cleans up.

:35:10. > :35:12.In this instance here it is King who is tracking back and he's

:35:13. > :35:17.unfortunate not to nick that ball. This is a shot for Martial, but what

:35:18. > :35:23.good strikers do, right place, right time and Rooney is here to stick it

:35:24. > :35:27.in the net. Flat and wasn't going to be left out. He showed glimpses in

:35:28. > :35:31.the game -- satire in every road which wasn't going to be left out.

:35:32. > :35:35.He could do better but it's a great strike from him and he showed some

:35:36. > :35:40.terrific moments today, such a presence, as Wayne Rooney said --

:35:41. > :35:45.Ibrahimovic. A real belief in his own quality. What about the way that

:35:46. > :35:49.Rooney and Ibrahimovic dovetails today, they were at the Community

:35:50. > :35:53.Shield Badge weekend, there wasn't much spark there but were there

:35:54. > :35:57.early signs today? They were much better today, I thought Rooney was

:35:58. > :36:01.superb today, there were questions over how he would fit in but there

:36:02. > :36:07.was no problem today. Infant terms of a front two they dovetailed.

:36:08. > :36:10.Sometimes Ibrahimovic dropped deep, sometimes Rooney did, they had nice

:36:11. > :36:15.linkup play. It will be interesting to see where the likes of Pogba and

:36:16. > :36:17.Lingard played, so they have legs to get past them because that side at

:36:18. > :36:23.the minute doesn't quite have enough legs. Do you agree? Totally agree,

:36:24. > :36:27.good players can play together. Roomy and Ibrahimovic are as good as

:36:28. > :36:32.it gets at the top end of the page. -- Rooney. They like to drop deep.

:36:33. > :36:36.They were on the away line pulling strings but when you have Martial

:36:37. > :36:40.Pogba making runs, they will be dangerous. Those two players are

:36:41. > :36:44.often in the headlines but you have pointed out one player who is an

:36:45. > :36:50.unsung hero. Yes, I think the Blind has been brilliant considering he is

:36:51. > :36:54.a midfield player, turned centre-half if you like. He has

:36:55. > :36:58.played wing back and fullback in his international career for former

:36:59. > :37:02.clubs but he is a ray of passing, the chip in there was a difficult

:37:03. > :37:07.technique. He always finds the right has. Rooney knows when he gets in

:37:08. > :37:10.those holes he will find him. -- he finds the right path. Defensively

:37:11. > :37:16.there is a question but I don't see that. He's clever, he knows when to

:37:17. > :37:21.come out, finds danger, stays on his feet, he is a clever footballer, a

:37:22. > :37:24.real thinker. He is becoming a good leader, I saw him organising people

:37:25. > :37:27.today, one-on-one with someone quicker than him, he knows he is

:37:28. > :37:31.right footed and reads it beautifully. He looks as though he

:37:32. > :37:39.has played there all his career. His positional play is excellent and

:37:40. > :37:42.that's what you get with clever footballers. Last year they had the

:37:43. > :37:45.joint is defensive record in the Premier League and it's because of

:37:46. > :37:48.this man. He reads the game so well. He gives Mourinho another option

:37:49. > :37:53.when Chris Smalling comes back. As for Bournemouth, the setup is pretty

:37:54. > :37:56.much what we saw last week, 4-3- three, a good goal through Adam

:37:57. > :38:01.Smith but at some point or many points it failed to click for them

:38:02. > :38:05.in the final third? Their build-up played for into the midfield was

:38:06. > :38:10.good as it always is but they lacked that intensity and cutting-edge that

:38:11. > :38:13.Bournemouth are almost renowned for in the Championship and last year in

:38:14. > :38:17.the Premier League. When they got into these areas of the pitch they

:38:18. > :38:21.chose the wrong option a lot of the time. Spaces out wide with Adam

:38:22. > :38:24.Smith, but they kept coming into this central area of the pitch,

:38:25. > :38:28.where Manchester United are so strong throughout the whole of the

:38:29. > :38:31.game, very strong in fact. But again, not just that, it was a

:38:32. > :38:36.hold-up play, every time the ball went into why the Wilson or King it

:38:37. > :38:40.didn't quite stick, or the lay-off As didn't quite work. Bournemouth

:38:41. > :38:44.are known for high-intensity get it right, get the balls into the box,

:38:45. > :38:48.get runners the box and it just didn't seem to work for them. Their

:38:49. > :38:54.touch, as we see here, Wilson, just didn't seem to stick. At all. In

:38:55. > :39:00.that first half. I found the play was a bit laboured at times and then

:39:01. > :39:04.Ibe is trying to make things happen here, you can see him almost asking

:39:05. > :39:08.his team-mates come on, move, give me something, but the spaces out

:39:09. > :39:13.wide and I felt that's where the space was for them today because of

:39:14. > :39:15.how strong United were in the middle and they kept trying to force these

:39:16. > :39:22.passes through the centre of the pitch. It was easy for United in the

:39:23. > :39:25.end. They didn't have to work that hard at dealing with them. What

:39:26. > :39:30.Bournemouth eventually had to resort to what situations like this, 40

:39:31. > :39:31.yard shots, and it wasn't a normal Bournemouth I was used to seeing but

:39:32. > :39:35.I'm not worried about them at all. There were seven games yesterday

:39:36. > :39:38.as the new season got underway. We start our round-up of Saturday's

:39:39. > :39:51.action with the champions. COMMENTATOR:

:39:52. > :39:56.It's a combination between Christian Fuchs and Moussa, Vardy's effort is

:39:57. > :40:02.blocked. An heroic block from little more. Mahrez, wide.

:40:03. > :40:09.A brilliant bit of passing play and that's excellent defending from the

:40:10. > :40:15.makeshift centre-back, Jake Livermore.

:40:16. > :40:27.Flicked goalwards, saved by Schmeichel incredibly. Now it's in

:40:28. > :40:38.though, prompting by Hernandez. Hernandez was in no doubt. Or was it

:40:39. > :40:43.at Ahmadiyya Monday? -- Diomande. There will be hoping for an incident

:40:44. > :40:47.free second half, but there's an incident straightaway. It's a

:40:48. > :40:51.penalty for Leicester. As Tom Huddlestone flicked his ankle, the

:40:52. > :40:58.contact was outside, but it's going to be Mahrez. Mahrez Hammers it

:40:59. > :41:03.home, straight down the middle to make it Hull City one, Leicester

:41:04. > :41:09.one. Hull City are coming again with Elmohamady. There's Snodgrass. Hull

:41:10. > :41:14.City have the lead for a second time, there's no doubt about who

:41:15. > :41:18.scored this one. Snodgrass got him said before firing through the whole

:41:19. > :41:26.and the caretaker manager was doing a fine job with this stretched side.

:41:27. > :41:37.A good delivery, all the way through and into the corner of the net. How

:41:38. > :41:42.often does that happen? A little fortuitous, perhaps, but it's the

:41:43. > :41:46.perfect start for the new era under Ronald Koeman. Mauricio Pochettino

:41:47. > :41:54.has already made a tactical change, bringing on his new signing Yang Sun

:41:55. > :41:58.up top. Plenty more for Everton to think about as Lamela guides the

:41:59. > :42:02.ball into the corner of the net and already that tactical change has

:42:03. > :42:08.reaped its rewards. Lamela has Spurs' equaliser. There's a degree

:42:09. > :42:13.of concern amongst the Everton supporters that they might go and

:42:14. > :42:18.steal the victory, and they almost do. Stekelenburg is outstanding with

:42:19. > :42:27.the save. Wonderful goalkeeping from Stekelenburg. The team has worked

:42:28. > :42:30.exceptionally hard today and the Everton supporters believe they

:42:31. > :42:33.deserve something from it but they are being stretched again by Lamela.

:42:34. > :42:39.The deflection has been turned over by Stekelenburg for his truly

:42:40. > :42:41.outstanding save. Lamela can't believe this didn't go in. Fabulous

:42:42. > :43:00.goalkeeping. Sterling being chased by Van

:43:01. > :43:04.Aanholt, penalty for Manchester City. Few complaints from Sunderland

:43:05. > :43:12.about the award of this penalty, to be taken by Sergio Aguero. 1-0. The

:43:13. > :43:21.main man scores the first goal of Manchester City's season.

:43:22. > :43:30.Borini, Rodwell, clever, Defoe, 1-1. Well, if you don't finish the

:43:31. > :43:34.opposition off, there's always the possibility that they will come back

:43:35. > :43:41.and bite you, especially if Jermain Defoe is in their team. And that is

:43:42. > :43:45.exactly what has happened. Not the first Manchester City manager to

:43:46. > :43:54.wear that expression. Sagna finding Navas well, Delph in the middle,

:43:55. > :44:00.Iheanacho. Manchester City are back in front and it may be that it was

:44:01. > :44:02.on an own goal. It has hit McNair. Nothing he could do about it.

:44:03. > :44:03.Manchester City two, Sunderland one. Running directly and clipped by

:44:04. > :44:11.Andrew Surman. Manchester City up and running but

:44:12. > :44:16.far from straightforward. We saw the champions Leicester come unstuck

:44:17. > :44:19.with what was a great performance against the odds from Hull City, but

:44:20. > :44:24.how much can be read into the result as far as the champions are

:44:25. > :44:29.concerned? Time will tell. The thing that stuck out for me was that they

:44:30. > :44:33.seem wide-open at times. Last year, their strength was playing as a

:44:34. > :44:43.team. Granted the loss of Kante, and Robert was being suspended had a big

:44:44. > :44:47.impact had a big impact on the game against Hull City -- Huth. I'm sure

:44:48. > :44:51.they will be looking to bounce back. The audition for Mike Phelan could

:44:52. > :44:56.not have gone better at Hull City. Talk of new investors in the wings,

:44:57. > :45:00.but whatever is going on, it needs to be sorted, because 13 fit senior

:45:01. > :45:04.players they cannot carry on like that. It's impossible. He deserves

:45:05. > :45:08.great credit and I know he's popular with the lads and he has said the

:45:09. > :45:13.mother the game well, and they played for him, so credit to him. --

:45:14. > :45:23.he set them up for that game. He might just get the job. As

:45:24. > :45:26.Manchester City, big statement to drop Joe Hart to the bench for pep

:45:27. > :45:34.Guardiola. It is long-term future in doubt? He's been in this situation

:45:35. > :45:38.before. He's the type of goalkeeper who has dug in and worked harder and

:45:39. > :45:42.has proved his manager wrong to get back in the team. The way I see it,

:45:43. > :45:47.right now, it is only option, because where else will he go?

:45:48. > :45:50.Within England, you look at the top six, there's nowhere for him to go

:45:51. > :45:55.at the minute. He has to be looking to get back in the side. If Willie

:45:56. > :46:03.Cal Bolero started behind -- ahead of him, is he the answer? There is

:46:04. > :46:08.talk that the Barcelona deal might be done that option. He might have

:46:09. > :46:11.to look abroad. Even though he is a fighter, he won't want to be a

:46:12. > :46:14.number two at this stage in his career.

:46:30. > :46:35.Match of the Day 2 will be there at midnight every Monday.

:46:36. > :46:37.Here's the rest of yesterday's action, starting at

:46:38. > :46:56.On the far side is Kingsley. Feeding Monteiro.

:46:57. > :47:08.Good girl. Fernando Llorente with the header -- good ball. Leroy Fer

:47:09. > :47:14.with his first Swansea goal might well have won the game for Swansea

:47:15. > :47:21.on the opening day. Gudmundsson for Burnley. That was on target. What a

:47:22. > :47:26.save by Fabianski, then Sam Vokes, and Fabianski again at the near

:47:27. > :47:27.post. 'S Fabianski has made some important saves this afternoon, none

:47:28. > :47:47.better than that one. The ball is deep towards Ramirez,

:47:48. > :47:52.towards Negredo. Middlesbrough bumble -- bungle it in, and Alvaro

:47:53. > :47:53.Negredo has got their first goal since returning to the Premier

:47:54. > :48:05.League. What a start. Ramirez. Lovely little run from him,

:48:06. > :48:15.and just off the outside of the post. A little burst of pace there,

:48:16. > :48:22.but just a fraction too wide. Arnautovic would be the favourite to

:48:23. > :48:26.take it. Perhaps erred and Shaqiri! 1-1 -- Shaqiri. It curls into the

:48:27. > :48:30.bottom corner and the man who scored a wonderful goal for his country in

:48:31. > :48:31.the European Championships in the summer has brought Stoke back on

:48:32. > :48:45.level terms. Palace have won it back well and

:48:46. > :48:52.Wilfred Zaha with a chance to stretch his legs. Zaha, and a top

:48:53. > :48:55.stop from Foster. Wilfred Zaha, faster to the rescue, Connor Wickham

:48:56. > :49:00.in there as well and West Brom somehow smuggle it away. It's not

:49:01. > :49:04.been a game high on genuine chances. Wilfred Zaha with a wonderful

:49:05. > :49:13.opportunity there though. McLean has six to aim for in the

:49:14. > :49:20.centre and he has found one of them. Salomon Rondon has put West Brom

:49:21. > :49:22.ahead. Excellent technique, to use the pace of the delivery to beat

:49:23. > :49:49.Wayne Hennessey. Up against Targett. Deeney lurking.

:49:50. > :49:54.And he arrives to smash it into the net. A dream start for the bother

:49:55. > :49:59.manager in this opening game. Watford lead at Saint Mary 's. --

:50:00. > :50:07.Robert Watford manager. Southampton have pressed and pressed. Again

:50:08. > :50:14.Gomez there. It is 1-1. A debut goal for Nathan Redmond. Art goes Gomez,

:50:15. > :50:22.gets the touch and Redmond gets his third goal -- first goal for

:50:23. > :50:30.Southampton. 1-1. Southampton on the break from the corner. He has caught

:50:31. > :50:37.him and brought him down. Now, the referee has a decision to make and

:50:38. > :50:41.it is read. It was cynical, and at this point you fancy the pace of

:50:42. > :50:44.Shane Long, and I think what's knew that. It was a straight red.

:50:45. > :50:50.A disappointed Ben Watson and we have seen the three boys coming up

:50:51. > :50:54.from the championship, and over the last 24 hours, who can we say at

:50:55. > :50:58.this stage, and I know it's early days, who is the best equipped to

:50:59. > :51:02.stay up? If you look at the squads, you would say Middlesbrough, made a

:51:03. > :51:06.lot of signings with good quality. I think Burnley have only signed a

:51:07. > :51:10.couple of lads within inexperience and lost probably their best

:51:11. > :51:13.midfielder of last season, so that I would expect them to do business

:51:14. > :51:19.because they need to strengthen to compete. Yes, I mean, look, Hull

:51:20. > :51:26.City up Robbie still favourites to go down. They need bodies, simple as

:51:27. > :51:30.that -- are probably still. 13 fit is not enough. And I agree with

:51:31. > :51:35.Danny Murphy, Middlesbrough best equipped. You talk about Burnley and

:51:36. > :51:38.this is their third season in the top flight and each time they have

:51:39. > :51:43.only lasted one campaign. If you are one of the fans, you would be

:51:44. > :51:47.frustrated in terms of where is the ambition, and do they need to loosen

:51:48. > :51:52.the purse strings to allow them a chance of staying up? I am sure they

:51:53. > :51:56.are trying. He has said he is frustrated and what type of player

:51:57. > :52:00.can they bring to Burnley with the wage structure? That is the trouble.

:52:01. > :52:05.I am sure they are scaring the market. I totally agree. After what

:52:06. > :52:09.happened last week they need to do something to strengthen the squad.

:52:10. > :52:12.At this stage of the season may say don't look at the table until

:52:13. > :52:15.September. But we are putting paid to that.

:52:16. > :52:17.Today's two winners are setting the early pace, with

:52:18. > :52:20.Jose Mourinho's Manchester United the only side so far to have won

:52:21. > :52:25.No manager, no problem for Hull - they're in a Champions League spot!

:52:26. > :52:28.They are in good company, with the top two from

:52:29. > :52:30.the previous season, Leicester and Arsenal,

:52:31. > :52:34.both losing their opening game for the first time since 1953.

:52:35. > :52:37.Before we go, time for 2 Good, 2 Bad, which has a rather apt

:52:38. > :52:48.We saw the Swansea boss, Francesco Guidolin,

:52:49. > :52:57.Jamie Vardy impersonating a boxer.

:52:58. > :52:59.Synchronised diving from Hull's Hernandez and Diomande

:53:00. > :53:02.This fan at the Vitality, taking part in the rhythmic gymnastics.

:53:03. > :53:07.We had a Klopp, skip and a jump at Arsenal.

:53:08. > :53:13.And a sneaky photo finish, with Jose Mourinho.

:53:14. > :53:15.Talking of finishes, that's it from us.

:53:16. > :53:16.Danny, Jermaine, thanks for your company.

:53:17. > :53:19.And with that incredible game at the Emirates rounding off

:53:20. > :53:22.the opening weekend in spectacular fashion, we leave you with a look

:53:23. > :53:24.back at other memorable starts to a brand new season.

:53:25. > :53:43.This is Shearer. Fantastic goal from Alan Shearer. That is what the money

:53:44. > :53:51.was for. Klinsmann. Who is a diver? Yes, it is a hat-trick. Beckham saw

:53:52. > :53:56.somebody off his line. Gustavo Poyet. Slaven Bilic.
