:00:54. > :01:00.Hello, welcome to Middlesbrough. This time next week the Olympic
:01:00. > :01:04.torch will be on the final few miles for its journey to London and
:01:04. > :01:09.the start of the 2012 Games. It will be a landmark occasion for
:01:09. > :01:13.Great Britain's little teams. For the men it is over 50 years since
:01:13. > :01:19.they have appeared at the Olympics, and for the women it is the first
:01:19. > :01:23.time. In fact we were banned from playing football 50 years ago. This
:01:23. > :01:28.is the only a warm-up game at the Riverside Stadium today and if
:01:28. > :01:33.Olympic gold is the target, we will get a good idea of how realistic
:01:33. > :01:40.that is in the next few hours. If gold is to be the colour, that may
:01:40. > :01:45.well come down to the formal of the team's golden girl. A Kelly Smith!
:01:45. > :01:54.Our country's top scorer and one of the world's top players. The
:01:54. > :01:59.striker heads eight cast mainly made from the England team, and at
:01:59. > :02:05.the helm at their coach, now a leading Team GB. Hope springs
:02:05. > :02:10.eternal. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We go into games
:02:10. > :02:14.wanting to win everyone and this is no different. The ambition is there
:02:14. > :02:18.but all that be enough to win the biggest prize of the Olympic Games?
:02:18. > :02:22.One of the great things about football at the Olympic Games is
:02:22. > :02:32.the chance to spread the message around the UK and take it out of
:02:32. > :02:32.
:02:32. > :02:39.London's. Six stadiums are taking hold of the football. Two of the
:02:39. > :02:48.most players have joined me today. A BBC regular, Sue Smith, and
:02:48. > :02:52.recently retired former captain here. Was that deliberate timing? A
:02:53. > :02:58.lot of fans would have loved to have seen you play a bit longer.
:02:58. > :03:08.Now I am here, I am thinking, can I take it back? But my knees were
:03:08. > :03:09.
:03:09. > :03:17.giving out. Team GB's lost his our game. There was 60,000 watching
:03:17. > :03:21.women's football in Germany. For this team to play in front of
:03:21. > :03:27.30,040 1,000, it is pivotal. Without a doubt and they are so
:03:27. > :03:31.excited. They just want to play. To take them to different venues
:03:31. > :03:36.around the UK is great and it is a way of letting people that have not
:03:36. > :03:41.seen women's football before... saw boys and girls in their school
:03:41. > :03:47.uniforms coming to watch. That is your audience. They can aspire to
:03:47. > :03:52.be them and that is fantastic. GB could not wish for a more
:03:52. > :03:56.experienced woman at the helm. Hope Powell has been managers since 1998
:03:56. > :04:01.and in that time, the men's team have seen nine different bosses in
:04:01. > :04:05.charge. Hope Powell has guided the women to two World Cups and three
:04:05. > :04:10.world champions, -- what championships, but this is
:04:10. > :04:17.different, this is Team GB. This is the first time we have seen
:04:17. > :04:25.a Team GB line-up. Four Scots in this side, no Pharrell Williams.
:04:25. > :04:30.Explain the thinking. -- no Fara Williams. There is no Rachel Yankey,
:04:30. > :04:34.Karen Carney, Williams, a lot of experienced players are not
:04:34. > :04:40.starting but those who are starting probably have earned their right to
:04:40. > :04:45.start. We will probably make changes at half-time. You are
:04:45. > :04:49.explode -- playing a very experienced Sweden line-up. That is
:04:49. > :04:54.a great test. They came third in the World Cup, which is great for
:04:54. > :05:00.them. They provide the right colour back at this stage to really test
:05:00. > :05:04.us. We know it will be a tough game -- bill right Caliber. It gives us
:05:04. > :05:10.a barometer to see how much work we have done and how much work we need
:05:10. > :05:16.to do. You have managed England 150 times, and this is the first time
:05:16. > :05:21.publicly with Team GB. How different is it? A very different.
:05:21. > :05:26.The kit is different, the players are different, it is a different
:05:26. > :05:30.environment. We have been with the male Team GB. It is a different
:05:30. > :05:35.atmosphere and something very special. We are trying to adopt the
:05:35. > :05:39.one Team GB ethos, which has been great. But in terms of the coaching
:05:39. > :05:44.staff and preparation, it is very similar because I am not going to
:05:44. > :05:53.change that, but it has been an enjoyable experience so far. Hope
:05:53. > :05:59.If you have followed England's women, you will recognise a lot of
:05:59. > :06:04.those names. That two Scots in there, and I do not mean Jill Scot.
:06:04. > :06:09.The Scottish players. People will not know as much about them. But we
:06:09. > :06:15.do know about Kelly Smith, one of the outstanding players of a
:06:15. > :06:19.generation. She is so it influential. When she is playing
:06:19. > :06:24.well, England and Team GB will be playing well. She can make things
:06:24. > :06:30.happen. I think everybody will want to watch Kelis Smith. She has
:06:30. > :06:35.struggled with her fitness but she has managed to get back. She broke
:06:35. > :06:39.ankle in March and is just getting back from that. Four months of
:06:39. > :06:47.recovery. I spoke to her over the last few days and she has been
:06:47. > :06:52.feeling really good. She can't wait for this. She played 40 minutes at
:06:52. > :06:57.Arsenal and 45 in South Africa. It will be great for me to see how her
:06:57. > :07:03.and Kim Little joined-up. Little is a Scottish player. They
:07:03. > :07:08.know each other. Kim has been in the Arsenal team for a long time.
:07:08. > :07:12.She will be used to the system. They are very similar players, very
:07:12. > :07:18.creative. I think Kim Little is back in midfield, and that was
:07:18. > :07:26.saved Kelly's looks a little bit. They will link up very well -- that
:07:26. > :07:30.will save Kelly's legs. Casey Stoney seems to have seamlessly
:07:30. > :07:40.slipped into the armband for England and obviously captain for
:07:40. > :07:46.Team GB as well. She is a definite for the starting 11. I think so.
:07:46. > :07:50.She has 90 caps for Scotland, Kim Little, more experience than Sophie
:07:50. > :07:57.Bradley, and this game is really important for them. She will know a
:07:57. > :08:02.lot about the Swedish players. They have been a bogey side for England.
:08:02. > :08:07.Not Team GB obviously! But one of their key players is not starting
:08:07. > :08:14.up. But they have a lot of good players and they do seem to be
:08:14. > :08:18.their bogey team. We always seem to draw against them. Caroline Seger
:08:18. > :08:22.is the player to watch. She gets up and down the pitch and she makes
:08:22. > :08:25.things happen. I know she was captain for a while and she left
:08:25. > :08:32.the captain's armband because she wanted to concentrate on her own
:08:32. > :08:38.game, so that is interesting. were third in the World Cup. They
:08:38. > :08:41.have always been England's nemesis. It is a great opportunity today. If
:08:41. > :08:45.we want to progress in the tournament, it will be coming up
:08:45. > :08:50.with teams like Sweden in the latter stages that we will have to
:08:50. > :09:00.get past. This is an important game to give Team GB a sense of being
:09:00. > :09:02.
:09:02. > :09:09.together as a Hull. -- as eight he met together. They need a good
:09:09. > :09:13.result, a good performance. They meet the girls to gel together as a
:09:13. > :09:17.team. Hope it said she would swap and maybe bring others on at half-
:09:17. > :09:21.time but this is a chance for the girls to prove themselves and make
:09:21. > :09:28.sure they starred in the next game. Most of the goals have played in
:09:28. > :09:32.big tournaments. -- most of the girls. You can see that the whole
:09:32. > :09:36.experience and the build up have been very different, you can see
:09:36. > :09:41.from Twitter. Just the experience of going into the Olympic Park,
:09:41. > :09:45.scene other athletes from other countries and other sports. It is
:09:45. > :09:52.the whole team of every sport and that has really come across him one
:09:52. > :09:59.of the interviews I read. And they have met the men's team as well.
:09:59. > :10:02.They had a social night together. It has been a bit much for some of
:10:03. > :10:07.the goals. Now they have to think about their game rather than the
:10:07. > :10:16.fact they are walking around with Craig Bellamy and Ryan Giggs! It is
:10:16. > :10:21.a new experience for some of the goals. -- some of the goals. Good
:10:21. > :10:27.afternoon, everyone, from the Riverside Stadium. A proud venue
:10:27. > :10:32.for a piece of football history. This evening we will see Ryan Giggs
:10:32. > :10:38.lead at Team GB against Brazil but first it is the turn of the women.
:10:38. > :10:42.That Team GB than it comes together for the first time. The first game
:10:42. > :10:49.of the Olympics comes next Wednesday against New Zealand. The
:10:49. > :10:53.first action of any sort in the 2012 Games. This is a really
:10:53. > :11:01.difficult a warm-up match. Sweden have history in every Olympic Games
:11:01. > :11:11.in which England's women have the injured. -- have it should. The
:11:11. > :11:11.
:11:11. > :13:08.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 117 seconds
:13:08. > :13:12.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. The national anthem, which of course we hoped to
:13:12. > :13:17.hear a lot during the medal ceremonies win the Olympic Games
:13:17. > :13:24.get under way in less than a week's time, as far as the football is
:13:24. > :13:31.concerned. Nine English players and two from Scotland, Kim Little and
:13:31. > :13:41.Dieke being the only non-English internationals. In Germany at the
:13:41. > :13:47.likes of Casey Stoney, Jill Scot, Alex Scot, familiar names. A lot of
:13:47. > :13:52.these places all play their club football in Sweden. The Swedish
:13:52. > :14:02.team includes four veterans of the Beijing Olympics four years ago,
:14:02. > :14:23.
:14:23. > :14:29.including the goalkeeper, Hedvig Nilla Fischer is wearing its
:14:29. > :14:39.familiar colours of Sweden. That is the kit we will have to get used to,
:14:39. > :14:44.
:14:44. > :14:52.Of all the names in women's football on show at the Olympic
:14:52. > :15:00.Games, Kelly Smith's will be really prominent. She is making her voice
:15:00. > :15:04.heard in the Team GB huddle. Sweden are just as experienced as side.
:15:04. > :15:08.They will fancy their chances of meddling for the first run at the
:15:08. > :15:14.Olympics. They have played at all previews four games at which
:15:14. > :15:24.women's football has been played but they haven't yet managed as
:15:24. > :15:36.
:15:36. > :15:46.facture of the fruit in March. She has briefly appeared for Arsenal
:15:46. > :15:53.
:15:53. > :15:58.since then. -- Fracture of the people get him to try to watch two
:15:58. > :16:04.tremendous games of football. It will give us a taste of what we can
:16:04. > :16:11.enjoy once the Olympic games get under way. You wanted to get your
:16:11. > :16:21.boots back on. It is a tremendous honour to be selected. What a great
:16:21. > :16:35.
:16:35. > :16:43.atmosphere! A good Test against Arsenal player these days. She is
:16:43. > :16:53.from a bit further north east. is actually from Sunderland. Bitter
:16:53. > :17:04.
:17:04. > :17:14.will be dying to get involved. She will be a key player. She has a
:17:14. > :17:16.
:17:16. > :17:25.tremendous left foot. She has not really started her third spell
:17:25. > :17:35.where Arsenal. She played in the Cyprus match and got an injury in
:17:35. > :17:46.
:17:46. > :17:56.That will be her proudest moment to date. This is Ifeoma Dieke. The
:17:56. > :18:07.
:18:07. > :18:12.Houghton with that. The game will start off with Team GB being a bit
:18:12. > :18:20.nervous. We eyed days away from the start of the Olympics. -- week our
:18:20. > :18:27.days away. The point has been made about the crowds. It all starts on
:18:27. > :18:36.Wednesday with Team GB against New Zealand. A crowd of over 40,000 is
:18:36. > :18:41.expected. They have not played in crowds of that size at home. To do
:18:41. > :18:51.it regularly you get used to it. Once in a while, you cannot hear
:18:51. > :19:04.
:19:04. > :19:10.the ball in. She is one of the number of players in the Team GB
:19:10. > :19:20.squad who is all set for another year in USA but that had to be
:19:20. > :19:28.
:19:28. > :19:38.cancelled in January due to a lack pitch for both sides. Not the
:19:38. > :19:58.
:19:58. > :20:02.midfield when she can. She is a tall presence. It will be
:20:02. > :20:07.interesting to see how Kim Little integrates into what is essentially
:20:08. > :20:17.an England side. She is Scott and a past appears best player Foster she
:20:18. > :20:19.
:20:19. > :20:29.is a clever player. -- Scot land's best player. She will probably be
:20:29. > :20:31.
:20:31. > :20:41.one of the star performers. It is a home from home. That was well
:20:41. > :21:11.
:21:11. > :21:16.but it was always well wide from Ellen White. That was a good break
:21:16. > :21:26.by Team GB. Ellen White is a great striker of the ball but probably
:21:26. > :21:36.
:21:36. > :21:46.not one of the best. The full-backs Straight on to the head of Steph
:21:46. > :21:48.
:21:48. > :21:53.Houghton. Hope Powell has coached for 150 games. Matt is a record for
:21:53. > :22:03.England. She has played a key role in revolutionising women's football
:22:03. > :22:30.
:22:30. > :22:35.She loves to do that for club and country. Ellen White in the box
:22:35. > :22:43.with a clever little ball. That was well-defended by Sweden. Good
:22:43. > :22:53.experience! They will be looking to tried to get the ball to Ellen
:22:53. > :23:03.
:23:03. > :23:08.the field. Team GB plays a similar formation to Sweden. The wide
:23:08. > :23:18.players of pushed a bit further forward. It is extremely attacking.
:23:18. > :23:56.
:23:56. > :24:01.it a bit. Sweden are allowing GB to come forward a bet. She happily
:24:01. > :24:07.accepted the close attention of Nilla Fischer. That was a bit too
:24:07. > :24:17.close! Kelly Smith managed to get her body in front of her and the
:24:17. > :24:17.
:24:17. > :25:02.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 117 seconds
:25:02. > :25:06.ball and she got that foul. It is problem at all for Hedvig Lindahl.
:25:06. > :25:13.She needed her team-mates to make their runs a bit quicker so they
:25:13. > :25:20.could get a touch. In the end it was easy. Another free kick
:25:20. > :25:25.conceded by Nilla Fischer on Kelly Smith. That is probably a tactic of
:25:25. > :25:32.Sweden, up looking after Kelly's net. They are targeting have as one
:25:32. > :25:42.of the dangerous players. -- Kelly Smith. That was just the wrong side
:25:42. > :26:06.
:26:06. > :26:12.bounce of the ball. Definitely more junior teams and she is a good
:26:12. > :26:17.player. Ifeoma Dieke has had a lot of work to do at the back so far.
:26:17. > :26:22.One reason she is in the squad is the experience she has in some of
:26:22. > :26:32.the top leagues in the world, playing against the top players.
:26:32. > :26:32.
:26:32. > :26:42.You can cope at this level. 90 caps for Scotland. She missed at that
:26:42. > :26:52.
:26:52. > :27:02.time. -- alt. -- out. Scotland are ever improving in terms of the
:27:02. > :27:07.women's international team. They are up to 21st in the world
:27:07. > :27:17.rankings. The last time they played England they beat them as well, in
:27:17. > :27:27.
:27:27. > :27:34.She lost the ball. The Swedes are set up with two screening
:27:34. > :27:40.midfielders. They are more protective than England. Sweden are
:27:40. > :27:49.trying not to concede that many goals by having two enforcers in
:27:49. > :27:56.front of the back four. It would take something especially serious
:27:56. > :28:02.for a referee to take cards out of the pocket. A different scenario
:28:03. > :28:08.next week! One eye on next week but you have still got to play the game
:28:08. > :28:17.as you were it because you want to place next week. The ball nearly
:28:17. > :28:24.had enough weight to beat Casey Stoner a. Good defending. -- Casey
:28:24. > :28:34.Stoney. She is right but it and that little balance helps. That is
:28:34. > :28:53.
:28:53. > :29:01.a great challenge. Kim Little kept week and that it was a rare
:29:01. > :29:11.occasion. She scored for Lincoln. A reverse pass into Ellen White which
:29:11. > :29:25.
:29:25. > :29:32.away again. Ifeoma Dieke heads clear. A smart turn from Casey
:29:32. > :29:37.Stoney. The ever increasing crowd. A lot more people have come in
:29:37. > :29:47.since the whistle. They are fully behind Team GB, which is good to
:29:47. > :29:48.
:29:48. > :29:53.see. A little bit more fluidity about the position. I have seen Kim
:29:53. > :29:58.Little picked the ball up in her own half and switch with Jill Scott.
:29:58. > :30:03.We have good players who can switch positions. She seems to be playing
:30:03. > :30:13.quite deep. She likes the ball at her feet and she has not been

:30:19. > :30:29.getting it. Players like that can unofficial training game for Team
:30:29. > :30:32.
:30:32. > :30:42.GB against South Africa. Good work from a Kristin Hammarstrom. Rather,
:30:42. > :30:52.that was Sofia Jakobsson with the effort. Sweden are attacking in
:30:52. > :31:15.
:31:15. > :31:19.numbers. That was a waste. She she stood on Steph Houghton's foot.
:31:19. > :31:24.Houghton has broken legs and things like that in the past and when
:31:24. > :31:31.somebody challenges like that, you are very aware. Especially on the

:32:40. > :32:47.referee caused a bit of drama by not raising the flag but it is

:06:54. > :07:00.some goals in that one. FINAL WHISTLE.
:07:00. > :07:05.We haven't had anything to trouble by a vet met today. Hope Powell
:07:05. > :07:10.will be happy with the way the team has played. They should do enough
:07:10. > :07:16.to get out of the group when the Olympics start next week. Sweden
:07:16. > :07:20.have been as strong as ever. Sweden always proved to be a tough nut to
:07:20. > :07:30.crack for any British International team. Full-time full game one in
:07:30. > :07:32.
:07:32. > :07:37.It wasn't perhaps the scintillating, competitive encounter that we have
:07:37. > :07:42.seen from England in competitions before, having watched England in
:07:42. > :07:48.quite a few tournaments. To see those players not performing at
:07:48. > :07:54.that high a level, the competitive edge is missing. And you could tell
:07:54. > :07:58.at times. The players were standing back a little bit. They think about
:07:58. > :08:03.the Olympics. Maybe they don't want to give too much away before the
:08:03. > :08:07.first game and they don't want to get injured, but a goal was missing.
:08:07. > :08:13.We were close and Sweden were close. I think that might have opened the
:08:13. > :08:22.game up a little bit. But it could have gone either way. The some good

:08:32. > :08:33.
:08:34. > :08:39.addition to the side. We could shoot week, Hope Powell? Dieke was
:08:39. > :08:45.rightly it player of the match. I think that back line will be set
:08:45. > :08:50.from the first half performance certainly. Midfield, she has a good
:08:50. > :09:00.idea. But maybe at the front line, she could change it. Kim Little can
:09:00. > :09:09.
:09:09. > :09:14.even go up front but Rachel did Rachel spotted the place in between
:09:14. > :09:19.and for his centre half, that is always the hardest run, when the
:09:19. > :09:29.forward comes in. She hit it well and that could have probably gone
:09:29. > :09:34.in. Yes, up when they make the run in between the two centre halves,
:09:34. > :09:40.it is so difficult. Rachel Yankey did really well. If we look at the
:09:40. > :09:45.players who came on in the second half, Carney, Bianchi, Bradley,
:09:45. > :09:52.difficult to choose from. You both seem to think the team that started
:09:52. > :09:59.the game are the preferred 11. Maybe front line. Rachel has done
:09:59. > :10:03.well. She has got options with Karen Carney and Ellen White. Ellen
:10:03. > :10:08.White is more of a number nine for me personally, but with someone
:10:08. > :10:13.like Smith in your team, you would put her there. But that is the
:10:13. > :10:19.beauty, the options she has an that players can interchange. You saw in
:10:19. > :10:24.the first half, their knowledge in their positions, they make sure the
:10:24. > :10:30.team shape is always the most important thing. K Lee Smith came
:10:30. > :10:35.through a test. She has not had much club football -- Kelly Smith.
:10:35. > :10:45.For her to come through a look-in match fit, that is good for Hope.
:10:45. > :10:47.
:10:47. > :10:57.Of course. It was nice to see her. I think Hope Powell is ready to
:10:57. > :10:58.
:10:58. > :11:04.Hope, this was your only chance to watch Team GB In a competitive
:11:04. > :11:09.match before you go live next Wednesday. What did you make of it?
:11:09. > :11:14.Very good contest. Pleased about that. I think we were a bit nervous
:11:14. > :11:20.to begin with in the first half. We played some good stuff. The second
:11:20. > :11:26.half disrupted it a bit. An even contest. We had some opportunities
:11:26. > :11:31.and so do they. We didn't lose but some lessons learned. It gives us a
:11:31. > :11:41.barometer to work with. We have some work to do. What have you
:11:41. > :11:41.
:11:41. > :11:45.learnt today? Casey Stoney did well. Kim Little obviously, coming into
:11:45. > :11:50.the side in that role. Her contribution was good. I think she
:11:50. > :11:55.was a little bit nervous and could offer a bit more. It is about
:11:55. > :12:01.getting a team playing together. It is a new squat so we have to be
:12:01. > :12:06.pleased with a draw against bronze medallists. How clear are you about
:12:06. > :12:11.just starting line-up on Wednesday? Everybody has put themselves in a
:12:11. > :12:17.good position to start. We have to see in terms of sickness and make
:12:17. > :12:20.sure everybody is OK. -- in terms of fitness. There is a lot of
:12:20. > :12:25.choice and it makes it difficult for me but when you have that depth,
:12:26. > :12:30.it means you can bring them on with quality. Hopefully they will do a
:12:30. > :12:36.good job. They will head down to Cardiff now, for the game against
:12:36. > :12:42.New Zealand. The atmosphere in the squad is fantastic. Giving us a
:12:42. > :12:47.different kind of sense of an international experience? A lot of
:12:47. > :12:52.the players are used two World Cups and European Championships, but it
:12:52. > :12:56.is a whole Team GB, and they are in the same hotel as the guys. It is
:12:56. > :13:01.togetherness and they are really enjoying it. They can't wait to get
:13:01. > :13:05.out and start. Today, they will take quite a lot of confidence from
:13:05. > :13:11.this performance. That would be great for them. Great to see you
:13:11. > :13:16.both as usual and I will see both on Wednesday. I will need to add
:13:16. > :13:21.the Olympic Park. It is good turn of the men on the Olympic stage for
:13:21. > :13:27.the first time in 50 years. Who better to test themselves on than
