:00:27. > :00:31.Hair and a warm welcome of live coverage of the England women's

:00:31. > :00:38.football final against France. We are following Hape Powell's team as

:00:38. > :00:48.they bring their -- begin their build-up to the Euro 2013 finals in

:00:48. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:58.Sweden. The England squad are in fine form and on an impressive run.

:00:58. > :01:03.Aluko scores the goal that surely seals England's place at the

:01:03. > :01:08.European Championships. Now Hope Powell is planning for the finals

:01:08. > :01:14.next summer and build-up matches do not come harder than France in

:01:14. > :01:19.Paris. They've finished 4th in the 2011 World Cup and in the same

:01:19. > :01:23.position in the London Olympics, only losing narrowly to Japan. The

:01:23. > :01:30.French have potency and flair to spare. Casey Stoney knows England

:01:30. > :01:40.will have to be at their best. will be a really good test. They

:01:40. > :01:43.

:01:43. > :01:48.Our regular expert partnership of Sue Smith and Faye White are with

:01:48. > :01:54.me to look ahead to what will be a pretty good litmus test to where

:01:54. > :01:59.England women currently stand in the higher tier of European

:01:59. > :02:03.competition. It is fantastic to see back so soon after giving birth to

:02:04. > :02:08.little Lucas. It is a good excuse for you to get out of your pyjamas

:02:08. > :02:12.and have a makeover! To matters of football, France, you have got some

:02:12. > :02:17.history with them, your first and last cap where against them and

:02:17. > :02:21.remember the penalty in the 2011 World Cup we will not talk too much

:02:21. > :02:25.about but England have not beaten them crucially in all 11 meetings.

:02:25. > :02:29.What do you reckon will be different tonight? I think their

:02:29. > :02:34.experience in the last two major tournaments, they have got to 4th,

:02:34. > :02:40.they have gone all the way to the bronze medal match. They have a lot

:02:40. > :02:50.of players as well who played in one team, Olympic Liam, so they get

:02:50. > :02:50.

:02:50. > :02:57.a lot of experience of playing week in, week out. They have from 62 at

:02:57. > :03:02.170 caps. They have been together a long time, as have England. They

:03:02. > :03:05.have had a manager in post for a long time as well. They have Nick

:03:05. > :03:13.Pitt in the big games when we have been close with them. Hopefully

:03:13. > :03:18.today we can get a win. Not too much between the two sides. Do you

:03:18. > :03:22.think they're close to winning a major tournament a times in? Yes,

:03:22. > :03:27.they are improving each year. There have been 4th twice and attacking

:03:27. > :03:31.wise they are fantastic. From defence, midfield to the centre

:03:31. > :03:36.forward, you do not know who to mark. They do not seem to concede

:03:36. > :03:41.too many girls. In the build-up to the Euros, they did not concede

:03:41. > :03:46.many goals. I think we have fantastic attacking players who can

:03:46. > :03:52.potentially do that. OK, let's get the thoughts now of the England

:03:52. > :03:56.head coach. Our reporter made the trip across the Channel to meet up

:03:56. > :04:02.with Hope Powell as the England team arrived at the ground. Thank

:04:02. > :04:07.you. Welcome to Charlety Stadium in Paris where I am afraid it has been

:04:07. > :04:12.raining pretty much all day but nowhere near as much as it did in

:04:12. > :04:16.Poland for the England men's match earlier this week. The England

:04:16. > :04:20.women's manager, Hope Powell will be pleased to hear that. You have

:04:20. > :04:24.just arrived in the stadium, thank you very much for joining me.

:04:24. > :04:28.Obviously, we know that England have qualified for Euro 2013, does

:04:28. > :04:33.that mean you can experiment with your tea more not really? It gives

:04:33. > :04:39.us the opportunity to play some top-quality opposition. We are

:04:39. > :04:43.looking ahead to 2013, preparation starts now. We will see how the

:04:43. > :04:47.game progresses and hopefully we can use a number of players.

:04:47. > :04:52.Hopefully it will be a good fixtures. We do know a few players

:04:52. > :04:57.are missing including one of your top strikers, Kelly Smith. Can you

:04:57. > :05:05.tell us more about who is playing today? Karen Bardsley is in goal,

:05:05. > :05:10.Steph, Sophie and Casey. My brain has gone, sorry, I have not been

:05:10. > :05:17.very well, so you will have to excuse me. Karen Carney will play

:05:17. > :05:21.in midfield. Rachel Yankey, Ellen White and Eniola Aluko on the right.

:05:21. > :05:26.It is a tough test against France, they are a challenging opposition.

:05:26. > :05:29.Yes, they are the calibre that we want. It will give us a bit of a

:05:29. > :05:35.barometer to see where we are and see what we need to achieve over

:05:35. > :05:41.the next eight months. Thank you. I will be back in a little while.

:05:41. > :05:46.Both I'm sure Hope Powell did not mean to forget Alex Scott. How can

:05:46. > :05:50.you, she is such a regular. Just the one change for England from the

:05:50. > :06:00.Croatia game we saw on the BBC from Walsall. That is Ellen White coming

:06:00. > :06:02.

:06:03. > :06:07.I think Ellen White will want to prove the point. She missed out on

:06:07. > :06:11.the last game through suspension. She will want to come in and make

:06:11. > :06:18.that game her own. I think the three in midfield will be vital

:06:18. > :06:28.today. The way France play with the one and the two, you think how well

:06:28. > :06:28.

:06:28. > :06:33.It is an attacking line-up against a good side away from home. Rachel

:06:33. > :06:38.has the experience, she has played quite well in the last few games

:06:38. > :06:42.and had player of the match. She deserves to keep her place. Likes

:06:42. > :06:47.to said, Alan had a back injury, she missed out during the Olympics,

:06:47. > :06:57.not playing a lot of football and the WS sell says she will be happy

:06:57. > :07:03.to come back in. -- W S Al. Fara Williams is not in the team at the

:07:03. > :07:07.moment. They will be looking to Karen Carney to make that happen

:07:07. > :07:12.and thread the ball through to Ellen. Familiar names in the

:07:12. > :07:16.England starting line-up. Previously, some of our focus has

:07:16. > :07:24.fallen on the most experienced players in the squad. Rachel Yankey

:07:24. > :07:31.is one of them. She has passed Gillian Cooke tub's 119 cap record.

:07:31. > :07:38.What about the future of at the England women's team? Do we have

:07:38. > :07:46.exciting talent coming through? You always look up to the senior

:07:46. > :07:50.players, the likes of see you and Casey. I look up to them. They can

:07:50. > :07:55.definitely improve me as a player. When I was younger I used to watch

:07:55. > :08:01.them play. You are going to learn from them and it is only going to

:08:01. > :08:06.help me as well for the future of. I always wanted to be Fay when I

:08:06. > :08:13.was playing. A just being around the players helps me improve. I

:08:13. > :08:20.want to learn from the best. Ever since I was a little girl, that was

:08:20. > :08:23.my dream to play for England. I got picked when I was 13, I started in

:08:23. > :08:26.the under fifteens and I have now progressed and am playing for the

:08:26. > :08:31.seniors. It is an amazing achievement and something I always

:08:31. > :08:35.wanted to do. I remember sitting in the room with the 15th and they

:08:35. > :08:39.said two people will make it. I remember looking around the room

:08:39. > :08:45.thinking, how will I get there? have always known that the talent

:08:45. > :08:51.in England is huge and it is very hard to get that challenge. It is

:08:51. > :08:54.something where you have had to work a bit harder. Toni Duggan, her

:08:54. > :08:58.first appearance at full international level. I was just

:08:58. > :09:03.delighted to get out there. I was nervous, of course, like you would

:09:03. > :09:10.be but I loved every minute of it. It was great to see her get on the

:09:10. > :09:18.pitch. Hopefully one day I can do the same. I came on and sobbed for

:09:18. > :09:22.Fe. Then I got injured. And then I finally got picked. Playing

:09:22. > :09:27.alongside Casey was really good. was in partnership with her for

:09:27. > :09:32.over a season. She is fantastic, reliable, dependable, it shows you

:09:32. > :09:37.how far she has come at such a young age. She is very mature and

:09:37. > :09:40.her decision making is brilliant. Another bright star. Hope has

:09:40. > :09:46.brought in a few younger players recently. By are chomping at the

:09:46. > :09:50.bit to get a starting place. They can learn from the more experienced

:09:50. > :09:55.players and we can learn from them with their hyper energy they have

:09:55. > :10:01.brought to the squad. On my first trip I remember hope introducing

:10:01. > :10:08.herself and I was a bit taken aback. She said just be yourself. They all

:10:08. > :10:12.help each other reached -- they all help each other out. The senior

:10:12. > :10:14.players will with come up to the younger ones and introduce

:10:14. > :10:19.themselves and they just be themselves, that is how they got

:10:19. > :10:22.here. I think it is important that the senior players in part their

:10:22. > :10:27.knowledge with the younger players and try and help them. Don't get me

:10:27. > :10:33.wrong, not all the younger players need it. Some of them are fantastic.

:10:33. > :10:36.Sometimes they might not make the right decisions. They have come

:10:36. > :10:40.into a set-up where there are more experienced players than them but

:10:40. > :10:44.they hold their own. They are chomping at the bit and trying to

:10:44. > :10:50.prove a point to Hope and the other players that they need to be here -

:10:50. > :10:56.- deserve to be here and rightly so. You cannot take that away from them,

:10:56. > :11:01.we all aspire to be like that but it will be a pretty difficult task.

:11:01. > :11:09.I would like to think in time to come I will get 100 caps myself.

:11:09. > :11:13.I take my chances, what could come of it? Of all the players that the

:11:13. > :11:17.international team get to pick from, it is getting better. These

:11:17. > :11:22.youngsters are coming in and fighting to be part of the England

:11:22. > :11:25.set-up and that is a big headache for Hope to have. I'm glad I will

:11:25. > :11:28.be retiring in a few years because they are getting better and better

:11:28. > :11:35.and I will be looking over my shoulder!

:11:35. > :11:40.So unlovely interviews there with the -- some lovely interviews there

:11:40. > :11:46.with the next generation. Plays you know really well, the likes of

:11:46. > :11:52.Saviour Bradley a and a fellow Scouser Toni Duggan, are they good

:11:52. > :11:55.enough to replace the old guard? They are fantastic. The attitudes

:11:56. > :11:59.of the young players coming through now, because they have been from

:11:59. > :12:02.the under fifteens right through to the senior squad, they want to

:12:02. > :12:07.learn and they want to learn from the experienced players and they

:12:07. > :12:11.will go a long way. It would be nice to seek Toni Duggan come on

:12:11. > :12:15.today and make an impact. They do seem to have a fantastic attitude,

:12:15. > :12:21.as somebody from the outside looking in, it is important that

:12:21. > :12:24.they have the right mentality, isn't it? Their attitude is really

:12:24. > :12:29.good. They come into the squad and they know what is expected of them.

:12:29. > :12:35.They know the routine and the demands of training. They have such

:12:35. > :12:38.a professionalism. When we didn't - - when we were at their we did not

:12:38. > :12:43.because the game has changed so much. It is important to be that

:12:44. > :12:46.confident. England certainly need to be careful of the threat posed

:12:46. > :12:50.from a very dangerous looking French side. We are just about

:12:50. > :12:55.ready to head over to Paris but remember, you can get in touch with

:12:55. > :13:05.us via the usual Facebook and Twitter channels. It is now time to

:13:05. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:21.see England begin their build-up to evening everybody. The build-up

:13:21. > :13:25.begins in Paris. France finished 4th in both the World Cup and the

:13:25. > :13:29.London Olympics and should give England a very good idea of where

:13:29. > :13:33.they currently are in European football's pecking order and what

:13:33. > :13:37.they need to do to be truly competitive in Sweden next year.

:13:37. > :13:42.Outside of the big two, the USA and Germany, the French are pretty much

:13:42. > :13:47.on back and a full? Yes, they have proved in the last couple of

:13:47. > :13:57.tournaments that they are the ones to watch out for. They have shown

:13:57. > :13:57.

:13:57. > :14:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:14:45. > :14:55.and come through as a group from or we will now have the French

:14:55. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :16:02.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:16:02. > :16:08.Sandrine Soubeyrand, winning her 186 two age -- 186th cap for the

:16:08. > :16:16.French tonight. Their goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi coming in alongside

:16:16. > :16:26.at Laura Georges. They experienced goalkeeper not involved in the side

:16:26. > :16:36.

:16:36. > :16:46.Williams. Eniola Aluko will try to offer some width down the right

:16:46. > :16:56.

:16:56. > :16:59.Williams, alongside Siobhan Chamberlain for England, and Elodie

:17:00. > :17:09.Thomis has often been a dangerous player, coming off the bench, as

:17:10. > :17:13.

:17:13. > :17:19.she was in that World Cup quarter- many familiar names for these

:17:19. > :17:24.England players, looking back to that horrible day back in at 2011.

:17:24. > :17:30.They can't settle any real scores are here today, but it would set

:17:30. > :17:34.down a marker before next week. France are doing really well, an

:17:34. > :17:39.emerging nation. When you get beaten like that, it's a bit to

:17:39. > :17:43.spill -- a poll to swallow. You now want to show they are at your love

:17:43. > :17:47.for and there should be a competitive match. There is no such

:17:47. > :17:51.thing as a friendly and I think England will be out there to prove

:17:51. > :17:57.they are the same as France. There will be plenty of build up games

:17:57. > :18:00.before the European Championships in Sweden next year. Hope Powell

:18:00. > :18:07.has chosen one of the toughest possible opponents to kick-off,

:18:07. > :18:10.when you look at some of the names there, Eugenie Le Sommer, near us

:18:10. > :18:14.to the camera, and the England players have plenty of smiles, but

:18:14. > :18:18.know they are playing for their places as well. If you take out

:18:18. > :18:23.Holland, it was a relatively routine group for the qualification.

:18:23. > :18:28.Now the hard work really starts. Yes, like Hope said before, this

:18:28. > :18:32.will be an indicator of where they are. It's not just a friendly, but

:18:32. > :18:35.it's looking towards next summer. All the players now want their

:18:35. > :18:40.place in the squad because younger players are coming through and they

:18:40. > :18:45.don't want to give up their spot easily. Here are some young players

:18:45. > :18:49.coming onto the pitch for the French, members of their under 17

:18:49. > :18:54.squad, who won the World Championship in Azerbaijan recently.

:18:54. > :19:01.That shows this French team, below this level, have some very talented

:19:01. > :19:04.youngsters coming through. Yes, they move through in groups. If you

:19:04. > :19:10.get that, then you get a real momentum going forward as they move

:19:10. > :19:16.up to senior football. The French coach has a firm grip on at the

:19:16. > :19:20.French football system. After our celebrity kick-off involving the

:19:20. > :19:25.under 17 players, we will finally get the real action under way and

:19:25. > :19:35.the hard work really starting for England now. Its the build up to

:19:35. > :19:38.

:19:38. > :19:42.important here in Paris tonight, but a good England performance

:19:42. > :19:46.against one of the best teams in the world at the moment would give

:19:46. > :19:50.them real confidence as the build- up to that major tournament begins.

:19:50. > :19:57.You look at the players not involved, it shows the strength and

:19:57. > :20:07.depth they have at the moment. it does. Both players have had

:20:07. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:19.playing system. Just like England. We saw many of their players

:20:19. > :20:25.involved in the London Olympics when they came so close to beating

:20:25. > :20:32.the world champions, Japan, and also the United States of America.

:20:32. > :20:37.Karen Bardsley has to do with a long-range shot from Celine Deville,

:20:37. > :20:43.who will be their major striker this evening. They had some good

:20:43. > :20:49.attacking this evening. A very fluid formation, as well. Here is

:20:49. > :20:53.Alex Scott. And now Eniola Aluko, who was the player of the game

:20:53. > :20:57.England's last performance against Croatia, which sealed their place

:20:57. > :21:04.at the European Championship. Sophie Bradley, one of the

:21:04. > :21:12.youngsters we heard from before the game, it's a tribute to her that

:21:12. > :21:17.they White retired and she has not been missed. I played with save the

:21:17. > :21:21.Bradley when she was 16 at Leeds and she was exactly the same now as

:21:22. > :21:26.she was them. She was mature. As a centre half, it's important. You

:21:26. > :21:31.have got to make the right decisions in the centre halves.

:21:31. > :21:41.Sophie has slotted in really well into the England senior set-up.

:21:41. > :21:47.

:21:47. > :21:56.Karen Carney was a bit loose. The her back four. The ball into the

:21:56. > :22:01.penalty area. Shepherded the back to Karen Bardsley. The French have

:22:01. > :22:11.got a lot of pace. It frightens defenders and the team and all of

:22:11. > :22:24.

:22:24. > :22:31.their players have that. They are surface after a heady days rain in

:22:31. > :22:41.Paris. A prolific story, her 50th cap. She already has 40

:22:41. > :22:54.

:22:54. > :22:59.Karen Carney is muscled off the ball again. Karen Bardsley has to

:22:59. > :23:03.make a routine save from the ball which was eventually fired back in.

:23:03. > :23:08.You can see the strength of the French, winning the ball back

:23:08. > :23:11.easily in midfield at the moment. A couple of opportunities. Nothing to

:23:11. > :23:19.worry Karen Bardsley, but she will think they need to get closer to

:23:19. > :23:29.midfield more. More discipline from Jill Scott and Anita Asante needed

:23:29. > :23:30.

:23:30. > :23:37.there. There is Sarah Bouhaddi, the French goalkeeper. She plays for

:23:37. > :23:41.Lyon. The champions of Europe. She is very much a stand in here.

:23:41. > :23:51.Celine Deville was first choice goalkeeper for some time and played

:23:51. > :24:16.

:24:17. > :24:21.against England and Germany in that striker receiving but has had to do

:24:21. > :24:25.most of the work in the opening five minutes deep in her own half.

:24:25. > :24:30.England need to go deeper to compact the midfield a little bit.

:24:30. > :24:34.Just put it against those French two midfielders. Two very good

:24:34. > :24:39.players. England need to wrestle the initiative off France, away

:24:39. > :24:45.from home. And the French have become a bogey side for England

:24:45. > :24:51.over the years. The English have not been victorious since a 2-0

:24:51. > :24:56.victory at Wimbledon is owned cloud Lane back in November 1974. The

:24:56. > :25:04.French move forward again. Celine Deville bursts into the area.

:25:04. > :25:14.could see the pace and the defending ability of Sophie Bradley

:25:14. > :25:23.

:25:23. > :25:27.are to make sure they got a shot on Karen badly. Laura Georges

:25:27. > :25:32.challenging for the ball in the air and England still have some work to

:25:33. > :25:36.do here. Sandrine Soubeyrand with the header down the line. They have

:25:36. > :25:40.been relative sanctuary of a throw- in. I would expect England to

:25:41. > :25:46.whether a bit of a storm, being in Paris. The French will want to put

:25:46. > :25:56.a show on for the supporters. The first 20 minutes or so is meant to

:25:56. > :25:58.

:25:58. > :26:06.be as safe as possible, they need Sandrine Soubeyrand. Rachel Yankey

:26:06. > :26:11.could not exploit the possession. Good defending from Alex Scott in

:26:11. > :26:15.the end, to drive her out at the vital moment. A little stumble

:26:15. > :26:21.there. She was out of position coming back but speed gets her back

:26:21. > :26:24.in there, enough to put off Eugenie Le Sommer, her first shot on goal.

:26:24. > :26:29.Quality going forward, three players, one on either side,

:26:29. > :26:38.difficult for a defence to deal with. The French coach has such a

:26:38. > :26:42.wealth of attacking talent available to him. Marie-Laure Delie

:26:42. > :26:52.scored in Cyprus, a comprehensive 3-0 victory for France on that

:26:52. > :27:13.

:27:13. > :27:19.been able to pick up some the end and that is good defending

:27:19. > :27:25.by Laura Georges. Good play by Ellen White there. Played the ball

:27:26. > :27:32.into Karen Carney. The flag stayed down. She is allowed to continue.

:27:33. > :27:36.Marie-Laure Delie. England almost presented the opportunity but in

:27:36. > :27:40.the end, it scrambled away again. The a few seconds difference

:27:40. > :27:44.between the England attack and the opportunity on goal. It looked

:27:44. > :27:49.offside to me but not the way the assistant referee looks at that.

:27:49. > :27:55.Again, just attacking with speed and most of the England defenders

:27:55. > :28:05.missed that. Luckily, the long legs of Jill Scott got rid of it. Good

:28:05. > :28:11.play by her. She created a good chance but what if France had

:28:11. > :28:14.attacked properly on that occasion? Hope Powell wanted a difficult test

:28:15. > :28:24.for her side and from the evidence of the opening nine minutes or so,

:28:25. > :28:34.

:28:34. > :28:43.she will certainly get one here in Sandrine Soubeyrand and Casey

:28:43. > :28:53.Stoney, and England have the throw- in. A rare Casey Stoney goal, only

:28:53. > :29:05.

:29:05. > :29:13.her 5th at international level, in scoresheet. Ellen White, suspended

:29:13. > :29:17.for that game. In the absence of Kelly Smith, who was injured again,

:29:17. > :29:22.I think Ellen White was always likely to come back into the side

:29:22. > :29:26.but we you surprised Fara Williams had to make way? A little bit. Fara

:29:26. > :29:36.has had an up-and-down season. You can't play in a position she wants

:29:36. > :29:54.

:29:55. > :30:02.but it is where she fits into this side. Hope likes to play Aluko,

:30:02. > :30:12.Karen Carney and Rachel Yankey. Fara Williams may be missed tonight

:30:12. > :30:21.

:30:21. > :30:28.but it is up to others to take forward. On to the head of Houghton.

:30:28. > :30:38.England give the ball away rather cheaply again. That was a decent

:30:38. > :30:43.

:30:43. > :30:48.looked like a foul there but a great little turn, lovely feet.

:30:48. > :30:52.Karen Bardsley obviously thought that was going to go in the top

:30:52. > :30:56.corner and dived appropriately. That shows a striker with

:30:56. > :31:03.confidence. She is a striker full of confidence and you would expect

:31:03. > :31:11.to see her on the scoresheet of these international games as she

:31:11. > :31:21.has been recently. She is one of seven Leon players playing this

:31:21. > :31:27.

:31:27. > :31:30.evening. They are the team to beat easier said than done. As soon as

:31:30. > :31:35.he put a ball in that space, the French try just attacking in

:31:35. > :31:42.numbers. If it means turning France around for a few minutes, that is

:31:42. > :31:47.what you need to do. The French have such an impressive home record.

:31:47. > :31:52.They have won their last 12 games here and not conceded a goal in

:31:52. > :31:56.their last six. Anything England can get here tonight would be a

:31:56. > :32:00.real achievement. They want to be measured against the best in Europe,

:32:00. > :32:10.heading towards the European Championships. It is games like

:32:10. > :32:10.

:32:10. > :33:03.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:33:03. > :33:13.this they need to play and also to The French have been fairly direct

:33:13. > :33:26.

:33:26. > :33:30.surely it! The way the game is going, you have to earn the right

:33:30. > :33:35.to play and England cannot just played the way they want to

:33:35. > :33:41.straightaway, they have to learn the way -- the right to play

:33:41. > :33:49.against a strong French team away from home. Part of that is not

:33:49. > :33:56.giving away the ball. They are just giving the ball away in a bit too

:33:56. > :34:02.much at the moment. It is a very attacking line-up for England.

:34:02. > :34:05.There is real responsibility on Anita Asante. I would imagine

:34:05. > :34:15.against the better teams in major tournaments, she may have a major

:34:15. > :34:53.

:34:53. > :35:01.job to do in there. It will be more Franco. Aluko managed to beat her

:35:01. > :35:06.second time around. England need to keep the ball up here as much as

:35:06. > :35:12.possible. If you can get Alex got forward and staff Houghton Ford, it

:35:12. > :35:20.will get the French under pressure. It is a bit cat-and-mouse at the

:35:20. > :35:26.moment. It is at which fullback can get the upper hand? At the moment,

:35:26. > :35:36.it is the French. I do expect the momentum to change. England do have

:35:36. > :35:57.

:35:57. > :36:07.hold onto the ball inside the carries herself well. She is 39,

:36:07. > :36:20.

:36:20. > :36:30.attack, they look a bit out of shape defending. It is always a

:36:30. > :36:30.

:36:30. > :37:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:37:40. > :37:44.reach to defend it but doing all strikers and the midfielders which

:37:44. > :37:49.is causing England problem so far. People talk about playing between

:37:49. > :37:53.the lines of the defence, midfield and attack and it is key that when

:37:53. > :38:03.you do that you actually arrive in the space, you are not stood in it.

:38:03. > :38:19.

:38:19. > :38:24.She kicks the ball and it is really Just giving a bit too much time for

:38:24. > :38:34.me. Excellent play by Karren Bardsley. A really strong player.

:38:34. > :38:41.

:38:41. > :38:45.One of the strongest players in the corner. Necib takes a. It cleared

:38:45. > :38:55.the near post. The French have it back again but this time it was too

:38:55. > :39:06.

:39:07. > :39:10.bit quicker than that. 20 minutes gone and it is 0-0. That is what

:39:10. > :39:14.Hope Powell would have wanted. Goals may be at a premium here

:39:14. > :39:20.tonight because the French conceded only two goals in their qualifying

:39:20. > :39:25.campaign. Their won or eight games scoring 32 goals in the process,

:39:25. > :39:28.including heavy wins over Wales, Scotland and the Republic of

:39:28. > :39:32.Ireland. England only conceded two goals in their opening game and

:39:32. > :39:37.that was it for them. You could argue that apart from the

:39:37. > :39:40.Netherlands they were in a slightly easier group. They do have

:39:40. > :39:46.confidence. That is White Hope Powell has not tinkered too much

:39:46. > :39:51.with the goalkeeper and the back four. The more they play together,

:39:51. > :39:56.the more experience they will have. This is a big game tonight. It may

:39:56. > :39:59.be a friendly but it is still a big game. A lot of the women's football

:39:59. > :40:09.world will be looking at this to see where England are. Bono France

:40:09. > :40:22.

:40:22. > :40:32.are doing well but how do England Bardsley. That was a great recovery

:40:32. > :40:38.

:40:38. > :40:48.away. They spent much of the opening 20 minutes also on the

:40:48. > :40:59.

:40:59. > :41:06.Bardsley by Delie. That was a great tackle. If Yankey had got a touch

:41:06. > :41:13.too that, she would have been in full flow. An opportunity for the

:41:13. > :41:19.French to line up their sights on goal. Can Neil Abily he made the

:41:19. > :41:29.challenge, is one of a number of centurions in at the French team. -

:41:29. > :41:39.

:41:39. > :41:45.England when they get inside the French half. There is much for Hope

:41:45. > :41:48.Powell to ponder here. Yes, but I expect what is happening is what

:41:49. > :41:53.she expect it to happen. She just wants a little bit more going

:41:53. > :41:58.forward, I would expect. Front have to be aware of the threat that

:41:58. > :42:08.England have. Otherwise they will just have more players forward.

:42:08. > :42:08.

:42:08. > :42:55.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:42:55. > :43:02.laboured at the moment. -- England's possession is all a bit

:43:02. > :43:11.laboured at the moment. Saviour Bradley has had a very busy start

:43:11. > :43:17.to this game. I don't know she was caught the wrong side but she is

:43:17. > :43:27.causing problems for the two centre halves. England cannot get into any

:43:27. > :43:38.

:43:38. > :43:48.corner count so far without any real reward. That ball clearly went

:43:48. > :43:52.behind. A goal kick has been given. When you look at the calibre of the

:43:52. > :43:57.teams who have managed to beat the French in recent times, the USA,

:43:57. > :44:00.the Olympic champions, Japan, the world champions, and Canada who

:44:00. > :44:06.picked up a bronze medal at the London Olympics, it gives you an

:44:06. > :44:11.idea of the task facing the England side tonight. Their coach is not

:44:11. > :44:15.afraid to make some awkward decisions as well. Sunnier

:44:15. > :44:20.Bompastor is considered one of the best left-backs but she has been

:44:20. > :44:24.left out for reasons of squad harmony, according to the coach.

:44:24. > :44:27.There are great stories about that. I think he has chosen some of this

:44:27. > :44:35.got instead of power because she does not get on with them,

:44:35. > :44:38.allegedly. Bid team have to get on. As a coach, you have to make big

:44:38. > :44:43.decisions like that if players don't get on. That is what he has

:44:43. > :44:48.done because he has got rid of a player who is a very good player

:44:48. > :44:58.and has a lot of experience. She is a world-class player. It must have

:44:58. > :45:10.

:45:10. > :45:15.another shot on goal, this time from Louisa Necib. She gets the

:45:15. > :45:19.ball into some great positions. She scooped the ball. You saw the

:45:19. > :45:29.position that she picks the ball up in. It was too far from the centre

:45:29. > :45:42.

:45:42. > :45:47.half for them to pick up the ball whole 90 minutes in the last game,

:45:47. > :45:50.but were clinging on grimly to a Jill Scott goal, but the French

:45:50. > :46:00.equalised with two minutes to play. And eventually won the game on

:46:00. > :46:04.

:46:04. > :46:10.penalties, on the way to finishing art have to take at the time, when

:46:10. > :46:15.you play the year after that, those experiences really help. You are

:46:15. > :46:20.able to actually deal with games like this a lot better, games in

:46:20. > :46:24.the championships, from those bad experiences. You tend to learn more

:46:24. > :46:28.from the bad experiences than the good. England have now qualified

:46:28. > :46:32.for the 5th successive major tournament, so a number of these

:46:32. > :46:42.players are used to playing at the sharp end of women's international

:46:42. > :46:48.

:46:48. > :46:54.the area. There she is! And, again! A great clearance from Alex Scott

:46:54. > :46:58.and England somehow scrambled the ball away. She played on the

:46:58. > :47:03.shoulders of the defenders and tried to get in, try to be clever,

:47:03. > :47:07.and a great defending from Alex Scott on the line. England escape.

:47:07. > :47:15.You have got to put the ball in there. Unless you can do that

:47:15. > :47:25.really, really well, and because she did that, she didn't get it in.

:47:25. > :47:29.

:47:29. > :47:39.It looks good if you can get it in. penalty area and that one does not

:47:39. > :47:47.

:47:47. > :47:57.player here, Alex Scott, a real up Rolls-Royce for England, playing it

:47:57. > :48:10.

:48:10. > :48:14.England do not make the most of the opportunity. They are finding it

:48:14. > :48:18.difficult to get the balls in the right area for the likes of Rachel

:48:18. > :48:26.Yankey and Eniola Aluko to get on the end of. It's not like they have

:48:26. > :48:31.played badly. England, still 0-0 after half an hour. If they get to

:48:31. > :48:36.this at half-time, I'm sure Hope Powell will make some tweaks to the

:48:36. > :48:46.formation or personnel. If they get the scoreline at the half-time Mark,

:48:46. > :48:54.

:48:54. > :49:04.right-hand side. It's a great pass. Alex Scott again. But nobody coming

:49:04. > :49:33.

:49:33. > :49:37.the French defenders to get a touch sits in front of the back four and

:49:37. > :49:47.tries to dictate the play but England, there, snapping at her

:49:47. > :50:25.

:50:25. > :50:30.ball in play but England have to the challenge but Eniola Aluko was

:50:30. > :50:35.there again. Much better by England. You can't see the pace of Eniola

:50:35. > :50:39.Aluko on the left-hand side, she managed to get away. This is what

:50:39. > :50:43.England need to do because they have the players to do it, put

:50:43. > :50:53.pressure on the French back four. They are thinking about defending

:50:53. > :50:53.

:50:53. > :51:41.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:51:41. > :51:44.rather than going forward. England Aluko will chase just for a second

:51:44. > :51:52.there. It did appear Sarah Bouhaddi carried the ball outside the

:51:52. > :51:57.penalty area. She did. What will the referee do here? I don't know

:51:57. > :52:03.why she did not kick about. It was obvious she was going to handle

:52:03. > :52:07.outside the area. I think, had that been a competitive game, Sarah

:52:07. > :52:11.Bouhaddi would be shown the red card because it was deliberate

:52:11. > :52:21.handball. You have got to go by the rules of football. If it's outside

:52:21. > :52:25.

:52:25. > :52:35.embarrassed. Why didn't she header it? She was a foot and a half of

:52:35. > :52:38.

:52:38. > :52:48.from a Eniola Aluko. We saw Steph Houghton score from this range from

:52:48. > :52:56.

:52:56. > :53:01.this eerie air in the Olympics. She and she has done it here for

:53:01. > :53:04.England in Paris. The brilliant. England have hardly had an

:53:04. > :53:07.opportunity but you see the importance of set pieces and then

:53:07. > :53:11.you have players like Steph Houghton who can really strike a

:53:11. > :53:16.ball. She gets the ball through the wall and the goalkeeper has no

:53:16. > :53:21.chance. You can see the intent in her eyes. She is technically

:53:21. > :53:27.unbelievable so when she gets a ball in a set piece like that, a

:53:27. > :53:32.dead-ball situation. The speed on that. She will not stop that. I bet

:53:32. > :53:36.you verses she got sent off now. What a fantastic kick that was

:53:36. > :53:40.against the run of play. England will not be too concerned because

:53:40. > :53:45.soaking up pressure and striking decisively is what you need to do

:53:45. > :53:53.in games like this. The French need to learn you do not get a goal for

:53:53. > :53:59.10 passes. You need to get pressure. This is what this level of football

:53:59. > :54:05.is all about. England have been lucky not to concede. But also the

:54:05. > :54:11.way they have defended it... Steph Houghton has such a purple patch

:54:11. > :54:18.for Team GB. Three goals in the Group Stage at the London Olympics.

:54:18. > :54:28.She has come up here for her first international goal for England,

:54:28. > :55:05.

:55:05. > :55:12.alongside those goals for Great Karen Bardsley. Eugenie Le Sommer

:55:13. > :55:16.was isolated. Sophie Bradley in the end let her turn. In these

:55:16. > :55:20.conditions, the ball dipped before the goalkeeper, always difficult to

:55:21. > :55:26.deal with it but Karen Bardsley gets a body behind it and makes no

:55:26. > :55:34.mistake. The French have carved out, virtually, all the opportunities

:55:34. > :55:44.here, but, for England, one goal so far. Rachel Yankey not able to

:55:44. > :56:01.

:56:01. > :56:11.conceding a goal at home has now challenges but the French have the

:56:11. > :56:30.

:56:30. > :56:35.Corine Franco still has the ball. Casey Stoney just taking the sting

:56:35. > :56:42.out of that header. The French build up play in the first half has

:56:42. > :56:47.been pretty good, but that last little bit. Karen Bardsley has been

:56:47. > :56:57.equal to it. The English have defended well. Not quite the

:56:57. > :57:18.

:57:18. > :57:23.quality they have in the middle the closest player to her, there

:57:23. > :57:30.was nobody in the penalty area. England, all of a sudden, have the

:57:30. > :57:35.belief they can do this. Bradley was there again, and she has coped

:57:35. > :57:39.pretty well with the French maned goal threat so far. More players

:57:39. > :57:49.want to get on the ball now, and the way they are knocking at around

:57:49. > :57:56.

:57:56. > :58:02.now, is what they needed. More against Eugenie Le Sommer but

:58:02. > :58:09.Celine Deville was onside. The Italian referee getting away. Will

:58:09. > :58:18.that help out England? Here is Karen Carney. Jill Scott! Fantastic

:58:19. > :58:23.goal! What a classic breakaway! And England have doubled their lead.

:58:23. > :58:28.Great play on the left-hand side. I know England have been working on

:58:28. > :58:32.moving the ball and cross in early. That was the first opportunity they

:58:32. > :58:42.have had. Jill Scott went for it and got her head on it. What a

:58:42. > :58:43.

:58:43. > :58:47.great finish that was. She finishes it superbly well. 2-0. I would

:58:47. > :58:52.never have said that. England were lucky they do not want to concede

:58:52. > :58:56.before the break. Scoring two is a double bonus. I would have said

:58:56. > :59:01.that two minutes ago. What a terrific header from Jill Scott.

:59:01. > :59:04.The fact she was forward, they have obviously worked on that. Get the

:59:04. > :59:07.ball in the box. They had the opportunity to do it but Rachel

:59:07. > :59:16.Yankey did it and Jill Scott goes beyond the strikers and scores a

:59:16. > :59:21.goal. Marie-Laure Delie, trying to get something going now for the

:59:21. > :59:25.French, the look absolutely stunned. They controlled the opening half-

:59:25. > :59:30.an-hour but the deliberate handball from their goalkeeper gave them the

:59:30. > :59:35.opportunity and, from that moment on, England have been in charge.

:59:35. > :59:45.Here is a chance for Laure Boulleau. That deflection not helping the

:59:45. > :59:56.

:59:56. > :00:06.the pressure and taking your chances and England have certainly

:00:06. > :00:32.

:00:32. > :00:40.heavier and heavier here has the rain tumbles down. Camille Abily

:00:40. > :00:50.wins the free kick. Gil Scott scored that goal in the World Cup

:00:50. > :01:18.

:01:18. > :01:23.quarter-final and she scored the it, right that it. -- right that it.

:01:23. > :01:27.But was routine for Bardsley again. Routine that difficult when you

:01:27. > :01:32.know you have got players coming and attacking you afterwards. In

:01:32. > :01:42.these conditions, all bounces in front of the keeper are difficult

:01:42. > :01:45.

:01:45. > :01:54.to deal with. The next one could be the key goal. If France get it, if

:01:54. > :01:59.England get it back or be enough to destroy France's confidence. There

:01:59. > :02:04.is another free kick. Casey Stoney this time with the challenge.

:02:04. > :02:14.is not the best place to give one of those free kicks. Casey Stoney

:02:14. > :02:20.

:02:20. > :02:30.moment, like expect the coach will have a few words to say to his team

:02:30. > :02:36.

:02:36. > :02:42.had a superb first-half. There have. Both of them have positioned

:02:42. > :02:47.themselves extremely well, her and Casey Stoney. She has worked really

:02:47. > :02:51.hard, she is a great centre forward. I don't know if they will do

:02:51. > :02:57.something different in the second half, the French, but if they keep

:02:57. > :03:00.doing what they're doing, they will keep a clean sheet. England have

:03:00. > :03:10.had two a tense and two goals so far. Looking for more just before

:03:10. > :03:11.

:03:11. > :03:21.half-time. Bradley back to her goalkeeper. She made a number of

:03:21. > :03:26.

:03:26. > :03:35.have an assured goalkeeper. When you know your goalkeeper is strong

:03:36. > :03:45.it really does help the back four. If it gets passed them, they know

:03:46. > :03:51.

:03:51. > :03:57.they have a goalkeeper behind who again and there she is. England

:03:57. > :04:07.will take the corner. They are getting more bodies forward now.

:04:07. > :04:34.

:04:34. > :04:42.England are aware of the threat of the attack. Ellen White went flying.

:04:42. > :04:47.There will be one additional minute at the end of the first half. I

:04:47. > :04:57.think Asante was a bit unlucky there. That was not a foul. There

:04:57. > :05:14.

:05:14. > :05:24.to negotiate and it will be a corner. It is key for England now

:05:24. > :05:44.

:05:44. > :05:51.decisive fist this time. The danger was not cleared but it was a good

:05:51. > :05:55.block inside the area. England get to half-time leading by two goals

:05:55. > :06:00.to zero. That flurry at the end of the first half really summed up

:06:00. > :06:04.much of what we have seen. England then responded with two goals

:06:05. > :06:14.within five minutes from Steph Houghton and Jill Scott. It is a

:06:15. > :06:17.

:06:17. > :06:21.very impressive half-time scoreline Well, we all expected that and it

:06:21. > :06:26.was a thoroughly fair reflection of the first half. All right, we are

:06:26. > :06:30.completely stunned! Sue Smith and Faye White watching in the studio.

:06:30. > :06:34.What did you make of that? We were watching the first half and we

:06:34. > :06:40.thought France were playing really well. They kept the ball really

:06:40. > :06:46.well and they were attacking. We thought how many will this be? And

:06:46. > :06:52.suddenly come from nowhere, we managed to scored two goals. We

:06:52. > :06:57.managed to build up the pressure. Do you think that was the tactic,

:06:57. > :07:02.to be completely outplayed at first? Not really. France are so

:07:03. > :07:09.good, their attacking players all interchange. Eugenie Le Sommer and

:07:09. > :07:16.Gaetane Thiney play really now road to get their full-backs on. Eugenie

:07:16. > :07:22.Le Sommer looked really threatening for them. Necib was floating around.

:07:22. > :07:27.She is like that. She manages to be in the right place at the right

:07:27. > :07:32.time for France. It is quite hard to keep an eye on her really. They

:07:33. > :07:37.completely controlled it. But to go, normally our problem is clinical

:07:37. > :07:42.finishing so today it has worked for us. They have definitely been

:07:42. > :07:48.practising finishing, haven't they? There have. Steph Houghton has. We

:07:48. > :07:52.will see her goal in a minute. Let's just have a look. We have

:07:52. > :07:55.just been talking about how the goalkeeper, Sarah Bouhaddi, cost

:07:55. > :08:01.them a couple of times in the Olympics. That is exactly what

:08:01. > :08:06.happened here. She carried the ball outside the area. Steph Houghton,

:08:06. > :08:10.what a fantastic strike force of three goals in Great Britain's

:08:10. > :08:14.first three games in the Olympics, she made a name for herself.

:08:14. > :08:19.has just carried on from the Olympics. As soon as there was the

:08:19. > :08:23.free kick we said, let Steph Houghton have it. Be keeper can be

:08:23. > :08:28.quite inconsistent. She can be fantastic or she makes mistakes and

:08:28. > :08:33.that mistake was the catalyst for us to start playing. After staff's

:08:33. > :08:43.goal I thought we started to play better and better. The that was a

:08:43. > :08:44.

:08:44. > :08:49.weakness in the squad. She is not the biggest in the frame. She does

:08:49. > :08:52.like to come out of her area and she has given us that free kick

:08:52. > :08:57.there. I don't think any person wants to get their head on

:08:57. > :09:01.something like that. We expected a reaction from France but then

:09:02. > :09:04.England went and scored a second goal. It was a very good goal. I

:09:05. > :09:10.tell you what, Sue Smith, England have been crying out for a decent

:09:10. > :09:20.left wing of for years. We have got Rachel Yankey, fabulous ball into

:09:20. > :09:25.Jill Scott. She has passed it out to Rachel. Gill made a good forward

:09:25. > :09:30.run, two defenders and Ellen is up there with her. They are both good

:09:30. > :09:35.headers of the ball. Gill scored against them in the World Cup in

:09:35. > :09:41.2011. I think because France are playing so compact in the midfield,

:09:41. > :09:48.we need to get the ball out wide to the likes of Richard Yankey and

:09:48. > :09:58.Eniola Aluko. Ellen White can head the ball -- Rachel Yankey. To do

:09:58. > :10:05.

:10:05. > :10:14.for those two goals, there was a That was a vital clearance. Alex

:10:14. > :10:22.did not track and a summer's run there. She has gone back and

:10:22. > :10:29.protected the goal. She had been so keep, Eugenie Le Sommer. We thought

:10:29. > :10:34.she might have scored. She was very lively. She seems to get just a

:10:34. > :10:40.little yard of space and Take That were shot here. A fantastic touch.

:10:40. > :10:47.You can see the players do not know whether to come to her or to back

:10:47. > :10:54.off. The good thing about terror as well as from a defensive point of

:10:54. > :10:57.view, she likes to join in and come in narrow. As a centre half, if you

:10:58. > :11:03.have got three players to mark, it is hard. She is in a central role

:11:03. > :11:08.here as well. That shows a confident striker when they shoot

:11:08. > :11:12.outside the box like that with a left or right foot. I think we have

:11:12. > :11:20.to mention Karen Bardsley. She has kept us in the game with some

:11:20. > :11:25.punches and vital saves. As many of u-net -- as many of you know, St

:11:25. > :11:29.George's Park is the new England national football centre. The

:11:29. > :11:36.centre was officially opened this month and is now the state of the

:11:36. > :11:41.art base for 24 teams including England's female squads. Earlier,

:11:41. > :11:45.Casey Stoney was invited back to Burton to take a look at the

:11:45. > :11:49.impressive facilities. It is a fantastic facility,

:11:49. > :11:54.everything is here, everything you could possibly need. It could take

:11:54. > :11:59.the country to a whole new level. This is our rehabilitation gin-

:11:59. > :12:03.soaked people who come here to stay for a few days or even a few weeks

:12:03. > :12:08.for residential rehabilitation of an injury or operation can come and

:12:08. > :12:15.use this facility and then we can use it. We keep them busy all day

:12:15. > :12:19.and working on various bits of equipment. This Is Our anti-gravity

:12:19. > :12:24.treadmill. If you did not want to put your full body weight through

:12:24. > :12:29.your joints as you are running, you can run on this treadmill. You can

:12:29. > :12:39.run from anything from 100 % to 20 % of your body weight. I will give

:12:39. > :12:44.it a go! I like it. I have had an ongoing problem for two years with

:12:44. > :12:50.Mike Achilles so to be able to run pain free with no weight is

:12:50. > :12:55.fantastic. For medical science is incredible. Some of the machines, I

:12:55. > :13:02.did not even know what they were four. There have been explained to

:13:02. > :13:08.us. A lot of it is injury prevention or post rehab. I am

:13:08. > :13:16.hoping to stay out of that room. It inspires you to want to train here

:13:16. > :13:22.and do well here. This is the elite pitch here at St

:13:22. > :13:28.George's Park. All of them are fantastic. The pitch dimensions,

:13:28. > :13:33.the grass laying, it is like Wembley so when the guys play there

:13:33. > :13:37.and the girls play there again it is exactly the same. For the first

:13:37. > :13:41.time, we have probably got the same equality of the men, we trained on

:13:41. > :13:45.the same pictures and have access to the same facilities, so to be

:13:45. > :13:49.able to train here is fantastic. It bodes well for good football and

:13:49. > :13:54.good training. I think it is about making that difference. We always

:13:54. > :13:57.look for the extra age that we can gain so coming to a facility like

:13:57. > :14:01.this and training prior to a major tournament, it can make that 2%

:14:01. > :14:11.difference, it could mean us getting to the semis aura final

:14:11. > :14:21.

:14:21. > :14:25.rather than the quarter-final and Participation is important and

:14:25. > :14:32.keeping girls involved in sport is very important. Having something

:14:32. > :14:37.like this for them to come to will only inspire them further. For me,

:14:37. > :14:42.this has been the best year of my life, without a shadow of a doubt,

:14:42. > :14:46.captaining England, the Olympics, playing in front of 70,000 at

:14:46. > :14:52.Wembley. It doesn't get better than that, but I'm still not happy where

:14:52. > :14:55.I am. I'm not going to sit back and be satisfied, because we have a

:14:55. > :15:01.major tournament next year, and this year has given me more

:15:01. > :15:06.determination than ever to go out there and do something special.

:15:06. > :15:09.A fantastic facility there. I bet you would love to have had that

:15:09. > :15:13.facility when you are coming into the game, not that I'm suggesting

:15:13. > :15:18.your towards the latter stages of your career. Especially with your

:15:18. > :15:22.injuries. Fabulous facilities. Without a doubt, and it's great

:15:22. > :15:26.that we have parity with the men. We are training in the same place

:15:26. > :15:29.they are. Sometimes it's better for us, the fact the men have their

:15:29. > :15:34.clubs where they had those facilities, so it's nice that we

:15:34. > :15:41.can use those treadmills and weights, and they are the best

:15:41. > :15:45.facilities in the world. It's great for us, I think. Do you think it

:15:45. > :15:48.can make a real difference in terms of actual fitness levels and

:15:48. > :15:52.recovery of injuries and performance levels in terms of

:15:52. > :15:56.major tournaments? Definitely, if you have a good lead-up to the

:15:56. > :16:00.major tournaments, and the squad can be together at it facility like

:16:00. > :16:05.that, it's amazing, but it's also important for players to access

:16:05. > :16:11.that when they are injured, as well, because it does vary different

:16:11. > :16:15.league, the care the players get at their clubs. If the girls can use

:16:15. > :16:20.that facility more often, rather than five days before again, I

:16:20. > :16:25.think it would be beneficial. it make them feel more professional,

:16:25. > :16:32.as well? Because the women's game is more of a semi-professional

:16:32. > :16:37.thing? Yes, injury prevention is a massive thing. It could help you

:16:37. > :16:42.and get you back playing a lot quicker. Of course, you want to

:16:42. > :16:49.feel professional. The more training you can do, the better the

:16:49. > :16:52.game will become. OK. Well, a great facility for that future of England

:16:52. > :16:55.international football, but let's talk about Scotland now because

:16:55. > :17:02.there was another important international happening north of

:17:02. > :17:06.the border today at Hampden Park, in fact, as Scotland finished

:17:06. > :17:16.second to France in the qualifying group and this was a first leg

:17:16. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:29.from a Little. You would never have expected her to miss that. That was

:17:29. > :17:38.in the 24th minute. Then Martin, from Chelsea, equalised after a

:17:38. > :17:48.mistake. It was 1-1, it finished, despite the fact Spain had a

:17:48. > :17:59.

:17:59. > :18:05.once again a step up to take the penalty. A superb double save by

:18:05. > :18:15.sue Smith's former Leeds United team-mate. So, confirmation of that

:18:15. > :18:22.

:18:22. > :18:27.A pretty typical draw for Scotland to be drawn again Spain. Do you see

:18:27. > :18:33.1-1 going to Spain next Wednesday? Is it enough? Judging by the

:18:33. > :18:39.expression on your face, I think... It will be difficult for them to go

:18:39. > :18:44.to Spain. Anybody expects Spain to get a result but Scotland put up a

:18:44. > :18:49.fantastic performance. And Gemma, despite a mistake, had a really,

:18:49. > :18:52.really good game. Hopefully, fingers crossed, they can go to

:18:52. > :18:58.Spain and get a result because there would be nice to see Scotland

:18:58. > :19:03.go through, as well. It would be superb to have a two home nations.

:19:03. > :19:09.Men's or women's. You know Kim Little, who we saw at the Olympics

:19:09. > :19:12.and Jenifer Beattie, quality players. Scotland are an emerging

:19:12. > :19:17.nation, getting better. France won their group for the qualifying

:19:17. > :19:22.easier, and Wales, Scotland and Ireland were in that group as well

:19:22. > :19:26.so it was a tough one. So they are the next best team in that group so

:19:26. > :19:31.it was a harder draw for them to get Spain rather than a Ukraine or

:19:31. > :19:36.Iceland. They would have been easier for them. They would have

:19:36. > :19:40.gone through them up, I think. Spain are a strong team and you

:19:40. > :19:45.would expect them to be favourites. The second half now of this

:19:45. > :19:50.enthralling match in Paris, which England are leading by 2-0, despite

:19:50. > :19:54.the fact that France outplayed them for the first half. What are you

:19:54. > :20:01.expecting now? I don't think she will make any substitutions to

:20:01. > :20:05.begin with and then hopefully we will see Jordan Nobbs and Toni

:20:05. > :20:13.Duggan come on. They have had good seasons for their Super League

:20:13. > :20:20.teams. Do you think Hope is thinking it's a chance by heard to

:20:20. > :20:30.blood some of those youngsters? -- it's a chance for Hope drew blood

:20:30. > :20:35.

:20:35. > :20:40.some of those youngsters? She will tell them to do their best. Elodie

:20:40. > :20:50.Thomis is coming out in the second half. That will be interesting.

:20:50. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :20:56.she's a great player. Back to the Thomis will give people in the

:20:56. > :21:01.quarter-final some bad memories because she came on and helped to

:21:01. > :21:07.change that game and Hope Powell had to make changes to combat that.

:21:07. > :21:10.It didn't really work on that day. It's an indication that the French

:21:10. > :21:15.coach wants to win this game or get something out of it, because he

:21:15. > :21:22.will be bitterly disappointed to see his team that dominate the game

:21:22. > :21:26.so much and then fall two goals behind just before half-time.

:21:26. > :21:34.team dominated and then they were sucker-punch to at the end of the

:21:34. > :21:38.first half. Williams has come on, as well. England also make no

:21:38. > :21:41.change at half-time as well. Fara Williams made way to allow for

:21:41. > :21:48.Ellen White and there is one of the youngsters we were talking about,

:21:48. > :21:53.Toni Duggan, given her opportunity. 45 minutes. Against one of the best

:21:53. > :21:57.teams in the world. Even though Hope Powell is on the verge of what

:21:57. > :22:07.would be a notable result here, she is experimenting, which, in many

:22:07. > :22:12.

:22:12. > :22:22.has gone off, along with Gaetane Thiney, so the French are making a

:22:22. > :22:23.

:22:23. > :22:29.couple of changes. Camille Catala is the other player to come on for

:22:29. > :22:34.the second half. Her 14th cap, and all of them have come off the bench,

:22:34. > :22:44.so she must be something of an impact player. It is England who

:22:44. > :22:54.

:22:54. > :23:00.start here in the second half than they did for much of the first.

:23:01. > :23:06.What is your view on a changes? It's obvious Hope was going to make

:23:06. > :23:12.changes. She probably planned it all the way through perhaps. Toni

:23:12. > :23:16.Duggan is a young player. Fara Williams things she should be

:23:16. > :23:18.playing as well, an England international, so I don't think we

:23:18. > :23:24.will see that much of a change because the effort and motivation

:23:24. > :23:27.will be there to win this match. The two wide players, Rachel Yankey

:23:27. > :23:32.and Eniola Aluko are the ones to make way, so it's possible there

:23:32. > :23:38.will be chains in shape here as well. It looks like Jill Scott has

:23:38. > :23:44.been pushed forward and Karen Carney has gone to the right. I

:23:44. > :23:49.suspect how that is, with Toni Duggan going on the other side.

:23:49. > :23:53.England are looking to build an attack. The shot driven towards

:23:53. > :24:03.goal from Anita Asante and that is the first effort from England which

:24:03. > :24:04.

:24:04. > :24:10.has not resulted in a goal. Yes, opportunities in the Olympics to

:24:10. > :24:15.score. But you still did not score. It's not one of their strengths.

:24:15. > :24:25.England supporters her enjoying what they are seeing. Here is Ellen

:24:25. > :24:26.

:24:26. > :24:33.White, holding up on a heavy pitch again. Toni Duggan. She eventually

:24:33. > :24:38.comes in with the challenge. Toni Duggan is an exciting player, a

:24:38. > :24:48.quick-play up. She is strong and she hassles defenders and will not

:24:48. > :24:56.

:24:56. > :25:00.Beaten to it by Fara Williams who, as Lucy was saying, believes she

:25:00. > :25:06.has a point to prove here having start the match on the bench.

:25:06. > :25:11.she is a quality player, Fara. She's always on the ball. Some of

:25:11. > :25:15.our passes are something other players cannot produce, so she is a

:25:15. > :25:19.positive change for England. Toni Duggan does well to get on the

:25:19. > :25:23.wrong side of Laure Boulleau but the ball runs out for a goal kick

:25:23. > :25:28.but already Toni Duggan showing she is going to give the French some

:25:28. > :25:32.problems here. Yes, she is a young player who wants to show she is

:25:32. > :25:38.good enough to be in this team, which she is. She is a real threat

:25:38. > :25:43.on goal, as well. I expect to see her with some opportunities.

:25:43. > :25:48.had a few moments against Croatia and almost scored a goal, as well.

:25:48. > :25:58.Fortified minutes here against opponents are a far higher calibre.

:25:58. > :25:58.

:25:58. > :26:43.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:26:43. > :26:48.lightning start to the second half, as she came in from the left on her

:26:48. > :26:53.stronger right foot, but could not get a clean strike away. You can

:26:54. > :26:59.see the confidence from this girl. She knows she is capable of scoring.

:26:59. > :27:05.They have started the second half well, England. Given away. England

:27:05. > :27:12.will be well aware of her pace. Good challenge of from a Casey

:27:12. > :27:18.Stoney. Marie-Laure Delie. Another fantastic block in the area, Anita

:27:18. > :27:26.Asante, this time. Her speed, she just misjudged the bounce of the

:27:26. > :27:30.ball. Delayed the opportunity. Again, Scott gets in the way. If

:27:30. > :27:36.she can't get herself in front of that, it would have been a goal. A

:27:36. > :27:41.tremendous strike. Second important clearance from Alex got inside the

:27:41. > :27:51.area. The French are still looking dangerous here. Karen Carney with

:27:51. > :28:25.

:28:25. > :28:29.deep again. But the French are finding it much harder at the

:28:29. > :28:39.moment to get in between the English lines. Yes, they seem to

:28:39. > :29:00.

:29:00. > :29:10.have pushed the game on five yards inside the area. My first look, I

:29:10. > :29:10.

:29:10. > :29:15.would have said that was a penalty. A let-off for Casey Stoney. That is

:29:15. > :29:21.what you do, you protest your innocence. They get away with it.

:29:21. > :29:31.It could have been a penalty for the hold. They are riding their

:29:31. > :29:35.

:29:36. > :29:45.luck so far in this game. The side to make this match a contest

:29:46. > :29:58.

:29:58. > :30:08.even though they conceded the corner. They were rather fortunate

:30:08. > :30:08.

:30:08. > :31:32.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 47 seconds

:31:32. > :31:36.chances. That was goodbye Thomis, she opened up a little bit of a

:31:36. > :31:46.space but the shot was not on target. England are getting

:31:46. > :31:56.

:31:56. > :32:01.threat going forwards in the second half. If you have just joined us,

:32:01. > :32:05.they were largely outplayed in the opening 45 minutes but scored two

:32:05. > :32:15.goals in five minutes. Steph Houghton with a thunderous free

:32:15. > :32:41.

:12:58. > :13:04.the ball. Shoe can turn and maybe face Ford when Anita Asante is

:13:04. > :13:12.right next to her but Sheikh elect to play back not realising that

:13:12. > :13:17.Delie was in that position. Delie is a predator. She has scored 41

:13:17. > :13:22.goals in 49 matches. You do not give her chances like this. Here,

:13:22. > :13:27.Laura Bassett needed to go and attack the ball. She was running

:13:27. > :13:30.back to have a goal but she allows Delie to nip in front and then

:13:30. > :13:35.Siobhan Chamberlain in his in no- man's land because it was not

:13:35. > :13:39.coming forward to have. Delie is a predatory striker. She is someone

:13:39. > :13:44.who will make things happen and that is what she did on both of

:13:44. > :13:50.those. She made it difficult for the defender. To make it 2-2, we

:13:50. > :14:00.were thinking, can we get a third and change that? We have never beat

:14:00. > :14:17.

:14:17. > :14:22.There was some fantastic defending. at using her body to make a bit of

:14:22. > :14:28.space. She is a strong player and she gets shoved off the ball but

:14:28. > :14:32.Alex saw the danger and got in the way again. Talking about defending,

:14:32. > :14:37.Captain Casey Stoney may have had their heart a them out at one point

:14:37. > :14:46.when Marie-Laure Delie got on the wrong side of her. Was there is a

:14:46. > :14:51.penalty? Yes, I think we spoke about how well the French do this.

:14:51. > :14:54.She is holding her a little bit. I know we are sticking up for Casey

:14:54. > :15:02.Stoney here but I think she will admit it was a penalty. We were

:15:02. > :15:07.lucky. Usually you can tell by the players' reaction, can't you?

:15:07. > :15:12.don't think Karen Bardsley, substituted, we don't think there

:15:12. > :15:17.was an injury. She was very solid for England all evening, pulling

:15:17. > :15:23.off some very good saves. Eugenie Le Sommer had some efforts on goal.

:15:23. > :15:28.How much does that breed confidence in defence? Hugely. She has a good

:15:28. > :15:34.frame. She can reach those areas high up which has often been a

:15:34. > :15:38.problem for women goalkeepers because of her size. She is so

:15:38. > :15:48.agile. She can really spread her frame across the goal and has made

:15:48. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:55.some good saves to keep us with a More analysis to, but our reporter

:15:55. > :15:59.is now here with Hope Powell. were talking before the match about

:15:59. > :16:04.how much of a challenge this was going to be. Are you disappointed

:16:04. > :16:08.they gave away the lead? Yes, somewhat. Two goals in front at

:16:08. > :16:13.half-time, we didn't play particularly well in the first half

:16:13. > :16:19.and in the second half, we played better but gave it the two goals,

:16:19. > :16:23.to be honest. So, in that respect, disappointed. We made some changes

:16:23. > :16:28.and the team still jailed in patches so it gave me an

:16:28. > :16:32.opportunity to look at some players are so, a good contest. There were

:16:32. > :16:38.defensive errors which led to the two goals. Those mistakes are

:16:38. > :16:43.costly, aren't they? Lessons learned. It's the start of the Euro

:16:43. > :16:48.2013 build up. It would have been good to go into the break over

:16:48. > :16:50.Christmas with a victory. The good thing is we did not lose. We played

:16:51. > :16:58.well particularly in the second half and came out with more

:16:58. > :17:02.confidence. I have a very good side. They only made two changes and we

:17:02. > :17:07.made several. More positive than negative, to be honest. You have

:17:07. > :17:12.learned more about the team for next year? Absolutely, you have got

:17:12. > :17:16.to try different things, players in different positions. Most players

:17:16. > :17:25.made a good account of themselves. A really good contest the season.

:17:25. > :17:30.Thank you. Plenty of positive Hope Powell is taking out of that. No

:17:30. > :17:35.win in a 12 against France but this is about the build-up to Euro 2013

:17:35. > :17:39.in the Sweden next summer so what other positives specifically were

:17:39. > :17:45.there from an England point of view? I think our team are good

:17:45. > :17:50.enough and we have more strength and depth now. Toni Duggan, she did

:17:50. > :17:55.very well and did not let her head drop after the mistake for the

:17:55. > :18:05.first goal. She still tried to take players on which is her strength.

:18:05. > :18:07.

:18:07. > :18:13.with her right foot, she's done that a lot. She shouldn't be too

:18:13. > :18:20.downhearted. As a young player, you do make mistakes. I made plenty. In

:18:20. > :18:25.games like that, it's not so much of a big problem. It was nice to

:18:25. > :18:30.see the mental strength. Despite the mistake early on, she still

:18:30. > :18:34.created things going for it. That was a fantastic shot. She does it

:18:34. > :18:41.for Everton week in week out and it to bring that internationally, it's

:18:41. > :18:51.great to see. Let's hear more from Paris with the captain Casey Stoney

:18:51. > :18:58.

:18:58. > :19:02.Thanks. I have got Casey Stoney and Alex Scott with me. A shame that

:19:02. > :19:08.those defensive errors caused a draw rather than a victory. Yes, I

:19:08. > :19:13.think so. We have given them two goals when it was unneccesary,

:19:13. > :19:17.really. They wear a good side and I thought we did well in all areas of

:19:17. > :19:21.the pitch up until those two goals and you can't do that in

:19:21. > :19:26.international football because you will get punished. The first goal

:19:26. > :19:32.speaks for itself and I know Toni will be disappointed but she should

:19:32. > :19:36.be proud of herself tonight. It's a learning curve of for all of us.

:19:36. > :19:42.was particularly tough in defence, wasn't it? Yes, and there's lessons

:19:42. > :19:48.we need to learn. If we can keep the ball better, we will do well.

:19:48. > :19:52.It's been a great year, qualifying for the Euros and we have got a lot

:19:52. > :19:56.to look forward to. You've already qualified, along with France for

:19:56. > :20:02.next year, but you seem to have a problem with the beating France.

:20:02. > :20:07.Yes, a stumbling block, but going in at half-time 2-0, we have never

:20:07. > :20:12.done that before and we know we gave them two goals today. They did

:20:12. > :20:16.not earn them. The girls should be proud. They defended well. It was

:20:16. > :20:20.great to see the younger players getting a chance to play. The last

:20:21. > :20:25.game internationally this year. It would have been good to go in with

:20:25. > :20:29.a victory to end the year. Definitely, but this of the kind of

:20:29. > :20:33.opposition we want to play. When you get to the late stages in

:20:33. > :20:39.tournaments, this is what you come up against. We have got to take the

:20:39. > :20:49.positive. For the players to get on the pitch and for Hope to look at

:20:49. > :20:49.

:20:49. > :20:53.them, it's great. Thank you very much. Casey Stoney, very harsh on

:20:53. > :20:59.herself and blaming herself a little bit too much. Is that

:20:59. > :21:05.something you do, defenders? As a defender, you always think what

:21:05. > :21:09.part did I play? My job is to stop goals. Karen Bardsley as well will

:21:09. > :21:14.be disappointed she left one end, even though it was not her fault.

:21:14. > :21:18.Many players will Self criticise themselves and that's the way you

:21:18. > :21:23.learn. You look at feed back of your own game and also as a team,

:21:23. > :21:27.as well. It's important to do that but not be too hard on yourself.

:21:27. > :21:32.It's the only way you learn by taking positive criticism from the

:21:32. > :21:36.coaches. That is something we have learned a lot from. We watch

:21:36. > :21:42.ourselves back on video and we see what we could do better and that

:21:42. > :21:46.helps us in the next game, so Casey Stoney is so hard on herself but

:21:46. > :21:50.had a fantastic game today so should be proud but it's nice to

:21:50. > :21:55.see she's learning those lessons. England where booked their place in

:21:55. > :21:59.Sweden for the finals in 2013 but Scotland are involved in a

:21:59. > :22:09.difficult play-off against Spain, the first leg taking plays at

:22:09. > :22:10.

:22:10. > :22:17.Hampden Park this afternoon. Here's chance, well saved by the

:22:17. > :22:23.goalkeeper but Scotland had a penalty which was scored by Arsenal,

:22:23. > :22:30.Scotland and Great Britain's Kim Little. Never in doubt after this

:22:30. > :22:34.handball for Spain. It was free empty -- entry today. A crowd of

:22:34. > :22:40.over 4,000 when there was that full programme of Scottish football.

:22:40. > :22:47.Then the ball got put away by the Chelsea striker, Adrianna. She had

:22:47. > :22:57.the chance to win the match for the visitors, Spain. If that was a

:22:57. > :22:58.

:22:58. > :23:05.mistake, then there was a penalty for handball Adriano took herself.

:23:05. > :23:11.Gemma Fay, a double save, in fact, as Scotland drew 1-1 at the end of

:23:11. > :23:14.that match going into next Wednesday's second leg in Madrid.

:23:14. > :23:24.It would be fantastic to have two home nations that Sweden next

:23:24. > :23:30.

:23:30. > :23:33.summer. Plenty of work for them to What would it mean for the

:23:33. > :23:38.development of Scottish football for them to make a major

:23:38. > :23:42.tournament? That's exactly what they are aiming for. They are

:23:42. > :23:47.developing, getting better, and we have played them a few times in

:23:47. > :23:51.friendly tournaments, and you can see the development from them. A

:23:51. > :23:55.lot of them play in the Superleague with us and we see them week-in,

:23:55. > :23:59.week-out, and playing with Arsenal and Everton, you can see they are

:23:59. > :24:03.getting better and you can see by the results today against Spain,

:24:03. > :24:07.you would never have thought they would have a draw with them at six

:24:07. > :24:17.years ago. Hopefully they can qualify. Briefly, they have a

:24:17. > :24:21.couple of very good players in the Great Britain squad in the summer.

:24:21. > :24:26.She had an amazing first few games. You don't like to see anybody

:24:26. > :24:33.injured. She was calm and composed and has the experience from playing

:24:33. > :24:38.in America, as well. Herself and Kim Little are the main bulk of the

:24:38. > :24:43.team right now. They have got a good future and hopefully they can

:24:43. > :24:51.do it. A good future but you want them to be at the Euros next summer.

:24:51. > :24:55.You can't make up that experience anywhere else other than by playing.

:24:55. > :25:00.Not just in qualifiers. The of course, the big teams come out of

:25:00. > :25:04.themselves, Germany, maybe they will have a dodgy few games but, as

:25:04. > :25:09.soon as it's a big tournament, they step up to the challenge and they

:25:09. > :25:13.always up there. France can do it as well. That's what the likes of

:25:13. > :25:17.England and Scotland need to do in the big tournaments. 1-1 going into

:25:18. > :25:21.the second leg on Wednesday night. This being the first Saturday after

:25:21. > :25:24.the international break in the men's game, the Premier League is

:25:24. > :25:30.back in business and has plenty more football to enjoy here on the

:25:30. > :25:34.BBC. We had a superb Match Of The Day for you tonight. Eight exciting

:25:34. > :25:39.games with bundles of goals, real theatre and a sprinkling of

:25:40. > :25:44.controversy. Much to discuss for Harry Redknapp and Alan Shearer.

:25:44. > :25:50.Joiners on BBC One at 10:30pm. You will not regret it. I might be home

:25:50. > :25:58.in time. Final thoughts? I think we have got to take the positive from

:25:58. > :26:03.tonight. We have got a good result in the end, a few errors let them

:26:03. > :26:08.back in unfortunately. Knowing how far a Hope Powell is, she would go

:26:08. > :26:11.through those DVDs with a fine- tooth comb. Tonight was always

:26:11. > :26:17.going to be a pretty severe test against one of the world's very top

:26:17. > :26:21.nations. And so it proved. England were 2-0 up in a Paris but could
