0:00:26 > 0:00:29Hello and welcome to Match of the Day 2 Extra.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32We're on BBC Two, 5 Live, the BBC Sport website & app,

0:00:32 > 0:00:35as well as the iPlayer.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39Joining me today, Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam,

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Arsenal Women defender Alex Scott and Shaun Custis, who's

0:00:41 > 0:00:44The Sun's Head of Sport.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47As ever, we want to hear from you, using the hashtag

0:00:47 > 0:00:49#bbcfootball on social media - or you can text us on 85058.

0:00:49 > 0:00:54Here's what's coming up.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58We'll dissect the match at the Emirates where David De Gea

0:00:58 > 0:01:02put in one of the performances of the season as Manchester

0:01:02 > 0:01:04United win at Arsenal.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06We'll assess how Sam Allardyce got on in his first match

0:01:06 > 0:01:09in charge of Everton - three points and a clean sheet

0:01:09 > 0:01:10against Huddersfield.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13And we'll be in Bournemouth ahead of the first game of the day

0:01:13 > 0:01:15as they take on Southampton.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17The newspaper back pages are dominated by last night's late game.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20The Sunday Times says Paul Pogba went from "Hero to villain"

0:01:20 > 0:01:21after starring in United's win.

0:01:21 > 0:01:26The Sunday Mirror leads on Ronald Koeman -

0:01:26 > 0:01:29"I'm Broken" is the headline, as he says his sacking by Everton

0:01:29 > 0:01:33was a bolt from the blue.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36And the Sunday Telegraph says Gareth Southgate may rotate

0:01:36 > 0:01:38the England captaincy during the World Cup next year,

0:01:38 > 0:01:46or just give the job to the player with the most caps in the team.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51But we're going to start at the Emirates.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53A crucial three points for Jose Mourinho's Manchester United.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56It was a first away win for him against a "big six"

0:01:56 > 0:01:58side in three years.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Arguably Arsenal had one of their best performances

0:02:00 > 0:02:03of the season as well but they lost 3-1, not least because of

0:02:03 > 0:02:04the performance of David De Gea.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07The one sour note for United, the red card for Paul Pogba that

0:02:07 > 0:02:10will rule him out of next week's derby with Manchester City.

0:02:10 > 0:02:15We'll hear from Arsene Wenger in a moment, but first Mourinho.

0:02:15 > 0:02:22Amazing attitude from every one of them. It is part of the quality they

0:02:22 > 0:02:26showed, they showed also an amazing character in the difficult moments

0:02:26 > 0:02:32of the game. The game gave us difficult moments. Arsenal gave us

0:02:32 > 0:02:35difficult moments with attacking quality. We have the difficult

0:02:35 > 0:02:40moments are playing with ten men for quite a long time. Amazing character

0:02:40 > 0:02:49by the players. They deserve your words, similar to my words when I

0:02:49 > 0:02:56met them in the dressing room.We played well and there is nothing

0:02:56 > 0:02:59more frustrating than having that quality of performance and then

0:02:59 > 0:03:05nothing to show for it. On one side, we feel sorry for the players

0:03:05 > 0:03:08because their attitude was impeccable until the end. But I feel

0:03:08 > 0:03:13as well, when you go into a big game, you cannot make the mistakes

0:03:13 > 0:03:22we made today from the start.I have no thoughts to speak about. I have

0:03:22 > 0:03:33this Peter Barrett Koscielny, I speak a lot of a lot of things, but

0:03:33 > 0:03:38I don't.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42You were there, Alex. It wasn't a great result but I thought it would

0:03:42 > 0:03:45have been impossible not to leave the ground with a smile on your

0:03:45 > 0:03:51face?I am still smiling. It is one of the best games I have been two at

0:03:51 > 0:03:57the Emirates in such a long time. It was end to end, how fast the game

0:03:57 > 0:04:01was. Apart from the defensive errors, Arsenal gave it their all,

0:04:01 > 0:04:06they went to it and didn't give up. Some of the football on display was

0:04:06 > 0:04:10a real quality football match. He were listening to it on the radio

0:04:10 > 0:04:16and you could feel it coming through on the radio? It was good

0:04:16 > 0:04:19commentary. Interesting to hear one of the big games being exciting.

0:04:19 > 0:04:27Normally they are a bit dull. It was good to hear end to end and a lot of

0:04:27 > 0:04:32action. Manchester United were the best in the end.We are used to

0:04:32 > 0:04:37cancelling each other out, the big side. David DeGale, look at his

0:04:37 > 0:04:42progress, I remember doing a game at Stoke when he was there. He wasn't

0:04:42 > 0:04:48strong enough to deal with the high balls. Now he looked like he bosses

0:04:48 > 0:04:53his area, strong hands.A different keeper. Comes from experience. He

0:04:53 > 0:04:57has been in the league for six or seven years, he is the best

0:04:57 > 0:05:01goalkeeper in the world at the moment. Some of the saves last night

0:05:01 > 0:05:06were incredible.I was off my seat celebrating thinking we had scored,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10but he managed to pull it back out. It is unbelievable, his performance

0:05:10 > 0:05:16yesterday.There was one he saved from Romelu Lukaku which was an

0:05:16 > 0:05:26astonishing volume in itself. -- volley. He would have been

0:05:26 > 0:05:31completely unaware and then the double save from Alexandra

0:05:31 > 0:05:38Lacazette.33 attempts against Manchester United team, it is

0:05:38 > 0:05:46unheard of.How did Jesse Lingard get Man of the Match? I know he did

0:05:46 > 0:05:50extremely well, but David DeGale them in the game. Arsenal probably

0:05:50 > 0:05:55would have won the game if it wasn't for him. He is a top goalkeeper and

0:05:55 > 0:06:00has been linked with Real Madrid over the last few seasons, will be

0:06:00 > 0:06:10interesting to see if he can be kept.To be fair, Jesse Lingard,

0:06:10 > 0:06:15Jose Mourinho has shown a lot of faith in him. Nobody would have him

0:06:15 > 0:06:20as a starter for England, nobody would have him as a starter for

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Manchester United. Usually when he is in the team, you think, who is

0:06:24 > 0:06:29missing.He is different from what they have. He wants to pass and run

0:06:29 > 0:06:36in behind. He is different. I think he is a top player. We don't play

0:06:36 > 0:06:42for Manchester United if you are a bad player but he should be on the

0:06:42 > 0:06:50plane to Russia. We have got to take Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Jack Walsh

0:06:50 > 0:07:00if he's fit.He's always on the move, he's clever. He's orthodox, he

0:07:00 > 0:07:05is different in the Premier League and Jose Mourinho trusts him in the

0:07:05 > 0:07:10bigger games because he knows the energy he will get from him. Marcus

0:07:10 > 0:07:13Rashford is still a little bit inexperienced but Jesse Lingard

0:07:13 > 0:07:20gives you something different. He gets the goals in the big game. Why

0:07:20 > 0:07:26do you think he is much maligned? Going from yesterday, his front

0:07:26 > 0:07:30foot. His ability to put defenders under pressure. Which led to the

0:07:30 > 0:07:36second goal for Manchester United. Defenders don't like that, they like

0:07:36 > 0:07:41time on the ball to pick passes at. But when you have Jesse Lingard

0:07:41 > 0:07:46constantly on your back, you need to be on your toes. That is his

0:07:46 > 0:07:50strength. I suppose from the other sort of players and their ability,

0:07:50 > 0:07:54some managers like that, go and harass the player put the defender

0:07:54 > 0:08:04under pressure. He is nearly 25 now, he was out on loan at Leicester, and

0:08:04 > 0:08:09if he is 25 now and hasn't nailed down a first-team place until now,

0:08:09 > 0:08:17maybe he isn't all that. But some players mature at different ages.He

0:08:17 > 0:08:20probably hasn't had that opportunity as regular as now since Jose

0:08:20 > 0:08:27Mourinho has come in. He is the one who has said, you are in and he is

0:08:27 > 0:08:35producing the goods in the big games.Do you think we might get a

0:08:35 > 0:08:41change in how big teams approach playing each other or do read just

0:08:41 > 0:08:45strike lucky yesterday with a bit of a fluid because United scored early

0:08:45 > 0:08:49and therefore could invite Arsenal onto them and then hit them on the

0:08:49 > 0:08:53break?Jose Mourinho is saying it was a great game, but he was

0:08:53 > 0:08:58probably tearing his hair out. Alan Shearer said in the week, the big

0:08:58 > 0:09:04teams play not to lose against each other. The game will probably be the

0:09:04 > 0:09:11total opposite at the Manchester derby. They will not want to lose.

0:09:11 > 0:09:19That is not Pep Guardiola's style. He will want to go for it.You can

0:09:19 > 0:09:22understand why because they don't want to lose ground against the

0:09:22 > 0:09:27opposition who are maybe their equals. That is what made the game

0:09:27 > 0:09:35is so refreshing yesterday. It was literally end to end and it was so

0:09:35 > 0:09:39entertaining and refreshing from a fan's perspective.Even though

0:09:39 > 0:09:44Arsenal loss, do you think there were lots of positives for Arsenal

0:09:44 > 0:09:50to take out of the game? If so, what would they be? Looking at it on

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Match Of The Day last night, Ian Wright was critical of their

0:09:53 > 0:09:59defending. The Telegraph said 74% possession but 100% defensive

0:09:59 > 0:10:04mistakes. Surely you can look for positives in performance rather than

0:10:04 > 0:10:08criticise?It was hard because we lost the game in the first 11

0:10:08 > 0:10:13minutes by two defensive mistakes. Other than that, one touch passing,

0:10:13 > 0:10:17the ability to open up the Manchester United defence at times.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21They other positives we need to build on, the characters you keep

0:10:21 > 0:10:26going. Mesut Ozil again, we need to keep producing those level of

0:10:26 > 0:10:29performance is from Arsenal players and eradicate those mistakes at the

0:10:29 > 0:10:36back.We have had a period at Stoke as well, individual errors cost

0:10:36 > 0:10:42shoot in the Premier League. That is what happens, you have got to take

0:10:42 > 0:10:47it on the chin but Arsenal will take the positives out of the

0:10:47 > 0:10:50performance. United are the second-best team in the league,

0:10:50 > 0:10:53performance against a team like that, is encouraging for Arsenal,

0:10:53 > 0:11:02but I think they are short. The negatives will be, Mazive Ozil

0:11:02 > 0:11:06having a great game yesterday, and nice audition for going to

0:11:06 > 0:11:10Manchester United. There is a chance.You will always be

0:11:10 > 0:11:22mysterious.They will always be respectful of each other and polite,

0:11:22 > 0:11:28Jose Mourinho and Ozil.Who would replace him, he is a top player. I

0:11:28 > 0:11:35don't know where he would play in the Manchester United team.It is

0:11:35 > 0:11:41unlikely he will stay. Going off yesterday's game, you need to build

0:11:41 > 0:11:46the team around them. Going back to the defensive points, yesterday, it

0:11:46 > 0:11:50was clear to see physicality was lacking defence. The power of Romelu

0:11:50 > 0:11:55Lukaku and Paul Pogba to brush off defenders and get round them.At

0:11:55 > 0:12:00this level, that cannot happen. Given how Manchester United

0:12:00 > 0:12:04performed when Paul Pogba was out injured, which was the stodgy part

0:12:04 > 0:12:08of the season for them and he will probably be suspended for three

0:12:08 > 0:12:13games. He is definitely out of the Manchester derby. They lose some

0:12:13 > 0:12:18fluency, lose an attacking threat. The way he linked up with Jesse

0:12:18 > 0:12:23Lingard and with Romelu Lukaku yesterday.He is a matchwinner, a

0:12:23 > 0:12:27world-class player and the difference in the Manchester United

0:12:27 > 0:12:34team. He has all of the ability. But they will bring somebody in. Maka

0:12:34 > 0:12:40tearing might come in, Juan Mata might come in. Not to the level of

0:12:40 > 0:12:46Paul Pogba bob but they are very good players. He did struggle. He

0:12:46 > 0:12:52feel about him, they are less likely to go for it in a big game than with

0:12:52 > 0:12:58him?Yes, it is the area he covers on the pitch. He reminds me of the

0:12:58 > 0:13:03Patrick Viera style, his ability to get box to box and his technical

0:13:03 > 0:13:08ability. His passing at times, his ability to switch play. He does make

0:13:08 > 0:13:15Manchester United take.He looked like he was in control, more so now.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19It makes it all the more frustrating that he was sent off and they will

0:13:19 > 0:13:28not have him.He sees the killer pass and he does open things up for

0:13:28 > 0:13:32Manchester United. Newf have got to play Romelu Lukaku upfront. Marcus

0:13:32 > 0:13:37Rashford is on the bench. Jesse Lingard will want to run in behind

0:13:37 > 0:13:42and it is a dream for a midfielder. Pick your head up and find the past.

0:13:42 > 0:13:47He is a top player and will be missed for the game next week.I am

0:13:47 > 0:13:52always interesting when a player says to a journalist, you don't

0:13:52 > 0:13:59understand a sending-off, unless you have played the game. He stamped on

0:13:59 > 0:14:04the back of his leg. Nobody can agree if it was deliberate. It is

0:14:04 > 0:14:19still being debated now, but it was a deliberate stamp, did he mean it?

0:14:19 > 0:14:25These things always crop up when you are on one of my shows.I have only

0:14:25 > 0:14:31seen it once and I think it is a red card. It is a red card for me. If

0:14:31 > 0:14:37you get a couple of clips, I have probably done the same thing. You

0:14:37 > 0:14:42will always try to defend it but he caught him on the back of the leg.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46Slow motion always makes it looks worse. No matter what sport it is,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49whether it it is cricket, rugby league, rugby union, slow motion

0:14:49 > 0:14:55makes things look worse. Whether it is deliberate or not, only he will

0:14:55 > 0:15:00know and the prose can debate it.I don't think he has gone to do him.

0:15:00 > 0:15:09It is strange to see how Bellerin tackled like that. His studs have

0:15:09 > 0:15:18slid off the ball and gone straight through.Does look great.

0:15:18 > 0:15:24He thinks he can get there but Paul Pogba was so fast. He could have

0:15:24 > 0:15:31pulled out of it.Let us move on to the first game of the day, two games

0:15:31 > 0:15:36today, West Ham and Manchester City later.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39The first Premier League game of the day kicks off at 1.30.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41It's Bournemouth at home to Southampton and Mark Scott

0:15:41 > 0:15:43is there for tonights Match of the Day.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Eddie Howe says he sees it as a Derby and he believes the rivalry is

0:15:46 > 0:15:52growing. Delighted to have Mark alongside me. What do you make about

0:15:52 > 0:15:57Eddie Howe's comments?Fair comments. 30 miles apart, both in

0:15:57 > 0:16:01the Premier League, we need a bit of extra rivalry to add to the Premier

0:16:01 > 0:16:06League mixture and it is really good. The two clubs are established

0:16:06 > 0:16:11sides now and let us hope it continues.A bit of criticism about

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Southampton's style of play but they have very nearly stop the Manchester

0:16:15 > 0:16:20City juggernaut in midweek.They have had a stop- start season.

0:16:20 > 0:16:25Inconsistency. The style has not been great. But at Manchester City,

0:16:25 > 0:16:30I thought they were excellent, and lucky to concede late on.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34Interesting to see how Nathan Redmond responds after the encounter

0:16:34 > 0:16:38with Pep Guardiola post-match -- and they were unlucky to concede late

0:16:38 > 0:16:43on.Bournemouth have been inconsistent, Eddie Howe was

0:16:43 > 0:16:46disappointed against Burnley. What have you made of them? The first

0:16:46 > 0:16:52four games of the season, they lost a huge blow to them, concern around

0:16:52 > 0:16:57the Vitality Stadium. But they have picked up since then. Inconsistency,

0:16:57 > 0:17:01biggest problem. They need to make sure this ground is therefore press.

0:17:01 > 0:17:06Last weekend's result was very bad against Burnley. No disrespect to

0:17:06 > 0:17:09Burnley. This needs to be a homeground advantage for them where

0:17:09 > 0:17:14they picked up as many points as they can.I am loathe to bring up

0:17:14 > 0:17:19Australia given away this weekend has been going, what do you make of

0:17:19 > 0:17:26Australia's group, France, Peru, Denmark?Pretty happy. France, one

0:17:26 > 0:17:29of the favourites, phenomenal side. Having them as the first game of the

0:17:29 > 0:17:34tournament, you do not know what you will get. Maybe they will

0:17:34 > 0:17:40underestimate us. If they do, there is a chance. Denmark and Peru,

0:17:40 > 0:17:43Christian Eriksen, phenomenal player, but if we catch him off his

0:17:43 > 0:17:46game, if we can contain him, anything is possible. We will be

0:17:46 > 0:17:51aiming for the second spot. Mark is part of the team this afternoon

0:17:51 > 0:17:57which will have full commentary of the game on Radio 5 Live and

0:17:57 > 0:18:00highlights on Match of the Day to tonight.

0:18:00 > 0:18:01Alistair Bruce-Ball, who's commentating on the game

0:18:01 > 0:18:04for 5 Live, has the team news.

0:18:04 > 0:18:10Plenty here after midweek defeats for both teams. Bournemouth did not

0:18:10 > 0:18:15get going, Eddie Howe makes five changes, Jermain Defoe starts, he is

0:18:15 > 0:18:19in full Callum Wilson. Jermain Defoe and Josh King upfront. Junior

0:18:19 > 0:18:24Stanislas is back from injury from Bournemouth. Lewis Cook comes in in

0:18:24 > 0:18:29central midfield. Mauricio Pellegrino has gone one better with

0:18:29 > 0:18:38six changes today, Cedric is injured so Jeremy Peace -- Jeremy Pied is

0:18:38 > 0:18:42in. Shane Long missing today with injury. Despite being told how good

0:18:42 > 0:18:47he is by Pep Guardiola on Wednesday, Nathan Redmond is on the bench and

0:18:47 > 0:18:51Sofiane Boufal start the game.

0:18:51 > 0:18:56Eddie Howe has made several changes, Bournemouth struggling to get some

0:18:56 > 0:19:01consistency, rhythm.That is what I was thinking, when they mentioned

0:19:01 > 0:19:04the changes, sometimes it is hard as players, you just need to go with

0:19:04 > 0:19:10the same starting XI. I know what Eddie Howe's thinking is, we need

0:19:10 > 0:19:14someone to spark something, freshen it up, but sometimes too many

0:19:14 > 0:19:20changes makes the team just wanted. It does. I'm saying that because the

0:19:20 > 0:19:25manager has not made any changes expert it is trying to get

0:19:25 > 0:19:27combinations, different players. Tough period coming up in the

0:19:27 > 0:19:33Premier League, the amount of games. When it is not going for you, you

0:19:33 > 0:19:37try everything, new players, different players. Like you say,

0:19:37 > 0:19:40both teams have made 11 changes between them.We discussed this

0:19:40 > 0:19:45before, when it is not going for you, sometimes it is better to be

0:19:45 > 0:19:49away from home in games like this where the expectation is not on you

0:19:49 > 0:19:58as much.I want to be at home. There is no... You do not want to be away

0:19:58 > 0:20:01from home when it is tough. The advantage of the home team, you

0:20:01 > 0:20:05might be under the cosh, you would rather be at home, under pressure.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09You have to take the criticism of the home fans but you have to be

0:20:09 > 0:20:13strong mentally and physically to take it on. I prefer to be at home

0:20:13 > 0:20:18than away somewhere else and the opposition team have the ball...

0:20:18 > 0:20:23What do we expect realistically of Bournemouth? Playing well above

0:20:23 > 0:20:27their weight, they have done phenomenally well, fifth from

0:20:27 > 0:20:33bottom. I do not expect anything else, really. I do not see where

0:20:33 > 0:20:38they would push onto.What do you expect from Southampton?Possibly a

0:20:38 > 0:20:43little better.They are a bigger club with a bigger ground?Well

0:20:43 > 0:20:48established now in the Premier League.Mauricio Pochettino, Ronald

0:20:48 > 0:20:53Koeman, they have had the standard, top ten, a little bit above that,

0:20:53 > 0:20:57cup finals and things like that, so when they dipped below that

0:20:57 > 0:21:00standard, they will always get criticism.Arguably, they were very

0:21:00 > 0:21:05close to going into this game on the back of a very good week. Charlie

0:21:05 > 0:21:09Austin beating Everton last weekend. It would have been a point at City

0:21:09 > 0:21:17if they had held on for another few seconds. For me, Southampton has

0:21:17 > 0:21:21been frustrating because they have players, a great team. Sometimes

0:21:21 > 0:21:27this season I have been watching, it is so side to side, no one taking

0:21:27 > 0:21:31the chance to open up, you have Nathan Redmond, give the ball to him

0:21:31 > 0:21:36more so he can open up players, get attacking options. It has been so,

0:21:36 > 0:21:41OK, this is nice football, nothing happening. Not a lot of penetration

0:21:41 > 0:21:45in the team. I noticed that when we played them. Not negative, but

0:21:45 > 0:21:52quite... Happy, nice football. Players like Steve Davis can open

0:21:52 > 0:21:57the past, Nathan Redmond, as you say, it is frustrating for them

0:21:57 > 0:22:02because they are dipping below the level they are at moment. They are

0:22:02 > 0:22:05wonderful club, Southampton, and what they have done, selling

0:22:05 > 0:22:10players, bringing in different players, great club.Moving onto one

0:22:10 > 0:22:14of yesterday's Premier League games, Sam Allardyce's first in charge of

0:22:14 > 0:22:21Everton, a home win over Huddersfield.

0:22:21 > 0:22:29Learn to dig in, be resilient. Before I got here, they had let too

0:22:29 > 0:22:33many goals in and we had to stop that and we had started to do it on

0:22:33 > 0:22:37Wednesday and again today. We can build on the attacking play more

0:22:37 > 0:22:43once we have established a solid defensive unit and the players who

0:22:43 > 0:22:47are injured, we have to try to get them fit as quickly as possible. The

0:22:47 > 0:22:50players playing at the moment have to stay fit because there is not a

0:22:50 > 0:22:55lot to choose from at the moment. The players out of the team, a lot

0:22:55 > 0:23:00of them will probably play midweek in the last Europa Cup games so they

0:23:00 > 0:23:04can give me a performance, encouragement in terms of selecting

0:23:04 > 0:23:10them if I need to going into this very, very big Christmas period.51

0:23:10 > 0:23:18second clip, he said, dig in, resilience, solid defensive unit.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22That is what Everton needed. Just him being there the other night gave

0:23:22 > 0:23:25the place a lift, gave the players... They knew they had to

0:23:25 > 0:23:30perform for the new manager. David Unsworth deserve some credit for

0:23:30 > 0:23:34midweek as well but Sam Allardyce turns up, everyone is thinking, in

0:23:34 > 0:23:38no danger of going down. Everton have struggled to accept they were

0:23:38 > 0:23:42even in the relegation battle, the board and the fans did not want to

0:23:42 > 0:23:56even take it on board that they were in a relegation battle. Now it looks

0:23:57 > 0:24:00like they will not be in one. Can Sam Allardyce take them higher

0:24:00 > 0:24:02battling for European places? I think he can. His best chance in

0:24:02 > 0:24:05club management since he was at Newcastle ten years ago to take the

0:24:05 > 0:24:07club into Europe.Spot on. The perfect decision to make, bringing

0:24:07 > 0:24:12him in. The issue they had was why they waited so long. They should

0:24:12 > 0:24:17have done it weeks ago before the international break. But he is the

0:24:17 > 0:24:22right man for the job. Like you say, get them solid. The biggest thing

0:24:22 > 0:24:27for them is the goals, the goals they were conceding were incredible.

0:24:27 > 0:24:32They have the players, Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Ross Barkley still

0:24:32 > 0:24:36to come back, they will win more games than they lose if they can

0:24:36 > 0:24:41defensively shore it up.If I was going to play devil's advocate, on

0:24:41 > 0:24:47the other side... Why are you laughing? That is my job! West Ham

0:24:47 > 0:24:51and Huddersfield at home, if at the start of David Unsworth's caretaker

0:24:51 > 0:24:56manager run they had played Westfield and Huddersfield at home,

0:24:56 > 0:25:01arguably, they would have got similar results -- West Ham and

0:25:01 > 0:25:06Huddersfield. It is how the fixtures fall sometimes. But when you have a

0:25:06 > 0:25:10manager like Sam Allardyce, no-nonsense, the persona,

0:25:10 > 0:25:14automatically players are like, I need to put a performance in.I have

0:25:14 > 0:25:20said before, when he walks in, you listen. You sit up and you think,

0:25:20 > 0:25:26right, the manager is in, the boss is in, he has a presence about him,

0:25:26 > 0:25:30takes no-nonsense.It is the aura. As a player, you know you cannot get

0:25:30 > 0:25:36away with anything. I have just had it at Arsenal. We had a period of

0:25:36 > 0:25:39caretaker manager, some players believed in his philosophy, so how

0:25:39 > 0:25:44do you get everyone on board? If you have a no-nonsense manager and that

0:25:44 > 0:25:52persona, you do, you are the leader. Those players who were not on board

0:25:52 > 0:25:54with the caretaker manager, they are letting the club and the fans down.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Absolutely. But you look at the performance of some of the players

0:25:57 > 0:26:01yesterday, where were they in the other games? The players at Arsenal

0:26:01 > 0:26:04who were a bit dubious about the caretaker manager, I am assuming you

0:26:04 > 0:26:12were not, you were one of the good ones. Did you say, hang on, you are

0:26:12 > 0:26:19being paid by the club, you have fun supporting you, pull yourself

0:26:19 > 0:26:24together?It taught me the importance of the top leadership.

0:26:24 > 0:26:29You want to win, no one wants to not perform. But when things are not

0:26:29 > 0:26:33going right, you maybe have one player thinking, they need to do

0:26:33 > 0:26:37this. Ultimately, you need the leader onside, this is what we are

0:26:37 > 0:26:42doing, stick to the game plan. It is just sometimes players might say,

0:26:42 > 0:26:48this might help, but when it is to the detriment of the team. There are

0:26:48 > 0:26:51always one or two who deviate but that is when the manager needs to

0:26:51 > 0:26:55be, right, I am in control, and you will have situations where the

0:26:55 > 0:27:00manager has to stamp his authority on it. You will have incidents in

0:27:00 > 0:27:04clubs for instance training, something, the manager has to be

0:27:04 > 0:27:13there. You will find players who try to get away with things and it

0:27:13 > 0:27:17happens at every club. You need a manager who is strong and Sam is

0:27:17 > 0:27:22that.Are you treading water a bit with caretaker manager? You think,

0:27:22 > 0:27:27all right, maybe he wants me to do that, let us see what happens with

0:27:27 > 0:27:30the permanent manager. You do not have to necessarily impress the

0:27:30 > 0:27:35caretaker.I have never been in that situation, but I still want to show

0:27:35 > 0:27:38the caretaker manager because you never know who was coming in. The

0:27:38 > 0:27:43new manager will watch the last five games, he will be asking how players

0:27:43 > 0:27:46are training, so he will get an update on the players and if they

0:27:46 > 0:27:50say, as soon as the manager got sacked, he dropped his standards,

0:27:50 > 0:27:55the manager will be like, OK, take that on board, he will watch games

0:27:55 > 0:28:02and see things. You hope every player has that mindset, mentality,

0:28:02 > 0:28:07but sometimes people are on different pages. You try as the

0:28:07 > 0:28:11captain...But players have different mentalities. Some of the

0:28:11 > 0:28:15players, did they let down David Unsworth?I think they did. Whether

0:28:15 > 0:28:19they do it consciously, I am not convinced of that. But

0:28:19 > 0:28:25subconsciously, Ronald Koeman brings in certain players, they will be

0:28:25 > 0:28:32disappointed. Some might come in... They might have spent money on

0:28:32 > 0:28:36players but he might not want them. They will be thinking, is my future

0:28:36 > 0:28:44up in the air?#bbcfootball. Here are some of the ones on Arsenal's

0:28:44 > 0:28:49defeat. Standard Arsenal, am I missing something, been like it for

0:28:49 > 0:28:55years? Susan, wondering what Hector Bellerin's leg was doing in that

0:28:55 > 0:29:02position for the red card for Paul Pogba. Eugene says, there are no

0:29:02 > 0:29:08positives, if anything, missing the chances should worry Arsenal fans.

0:29:08 > 0:29:13#bbcfootball. Stoke against Swansea. I am not understating this, huge win

0:29:13 > 0:29:20for your club yesterday.Yeah. It has been a difficult period. The

0:29:20 > 0:29:26results, you get judged on your results, for Foreman says have been

0:29:26 > 0:29:30OK, we were losing games -- performances have been OK. You have

0:29:30 > 0:29:34to stop it and we were lucky we did that yesterday, played well enough

0:29:34 > 0:29:40in parts of the game. We reacted well to the goals so early, great

0:29:40 > 0:29:44finish from Wilfried Bony. A must win game for us, I thought

0:29:44 > 0:29:49yesterday.What is going wrong? You look at the squad and you think,

0:29:49 > 0:29:55there is a balance there, some good centre halves, good midfielders,

0:29:55 > 0:30:01does it boiled down to struggling to score?Well, we are losing goals as

0:30:01 > 0:30:06well, that is difficult. Second worst record in the league for

0:30:06 > 0:30:11losing goals. That is a disappointment. Over the years, and

0:30:11 > 0:30:18we still do take pride in... Ryan harps on about it, keeping clean

0:30:18 > 0:30:23sheets, it is big for him, he wants to do that. We are not used to

0:30:23 > 0:30:32goals, 7-2 at Man City, beaten by Liverpool... It is difficult. We

0:30:32 > 0:30:37have good characters in the team. They are the ones that pull us out

0:30:37 > 0:30:41of the trenches when we are struggling and we will be OK.And

0:30:41 > 0:30:45Mark Hughes, the opposite to the others in that the players here

0:30:45 > 0:30:51selecting he stays with to get you out of it.He does. The performances

0:30:51 > 0:30:55have been good to a point. We have got to a certain point in the pitch

0:30:55 > 0:30:58when we have done well. Just the final area, we were lacking for a

0:30:58 > 0:31:05little bit. A couple of assists, goals. That will come. We are coming

0:31:05 > 0:31:11into a good period now, we play three of the big ones in the next

0:31:11 > 0:31:15couple of months, so we will look to win every game, really, but it will

0:31:15 > 0:31:20be difficult, the Premier League. Yesterday, Swansea, one of the teams

0:31:20 > 0:31:30we targeted, we felt we could win.

0:31:30 > 0:31:37We deserve to be bottom because we lost those games. A lot of them were

0:31:37 > 0:31:41lost by a small margin but I cannot say we have been unlucky. We should

0:31:41 > 0:31:48be in a higher position. We have not been good enough. Today was typical

0:31:48 > 0:31:53us at this time. Were you angry with the way things are with your

0:31:53 > 0:31:58players, the position they find themselves in?Very angry and very

0:31:58 > 0:32:04disappointed with what we are showing at the moment. Monday to

0:32:04 > 0:32:09Friday, we focused, working. Teams coming up against us, we're not

0:32:09 > 0:32:13surprised by what they do either individually or as a team. We are

0:32:13 > 0:32:17thorough with our analysis, we go through our preparation with

0:32:17 > 0:32:22professionalism. What we are managing to do is not turn our good

0:32:22 > 0:32:27work in the week into winning matches at the weekend. There are

0:32:27 > 0:32:31disturbing stats for Swansea fans.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34One win in their last 12 Premier League games for Swansea.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36They've only collected one point out of a possible 21,

0:32:36 > 0:32:39and that was a 0-0 draw at home to Bournemouth.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41They've also had fewer shots than any other side at this stage

0:32:41 > 0:32:44of a Premier League season since 2004, mustering only 27.

0:32:44 > 0:32:47They've scored eight goals in their 15 matches.

0:32:47 > 0:32:57Wilfried Bony's strike yesterday was their first since October.

0:32:58 > 0:33:06If you sell goofy Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente, you get Hamilton

0:33:06 > 0:33:11in on loan, and you bring in Wilfred Bonney, it cannot be a surprise your

0:33:11 > 0:33:18goal strop, can it?Not at all, but like I was saying about Bournemouth,

0:33:18 > 0:33:22Swansea are a success story if you look back over the last 20 years

0:33:22 > 0:33:30where they were, nearly going out of business. They are a success. Them

0:33:30 > 0:33:34being at the bottom of the Premier League is not the end of the world.

0:33:34 > 0:33:38It might feel like it at the moment, but they are a success story. They

0:33:38 > 0:33:46have two balance the books. I don't think we take into account enough,

0:33:46 > 0:33:50geographically, it's not easy. They are almost cut off from the rest of

0:33:50 > 0:33:55the Premier League. Fans, players, long journeys. How easy is it for

0:33:55 > 0:34:03them to attract the top players to Swansea. They would rather go to

0:34:03 > 0:34:05London, Manchester. Various circumstances conspiring against

0:34:05 > 0:34:10them. But as you say, losing players like that, Sigurdsson, desperately

0:34:10 > 0:34:14wanted to get out, he wanted the move. Eventually you come to the

0:34:14 > 0:34:25point where you have got to let him go. The same goes for Llorente,

0:34:25 > 0:34:29you're going to say Spurs, please. Let's go.Do you think where they

0:34:29 > 0:34:42are makes a massive difference to attract players?Players like

0:34:42 > 0:34:50Newcastle, David Ginola, he then wanted to be in London. And yet

0:34:50 > 0:34:59players love it. Their families love it, kids. A lot of the form players

0:34:59 > 0:35:02find it difficult because London and Manchester are big attractions. When

0:35:02 > 0:35:05you get an opportunity to play in the Premier League, it doesn't

0:35:05 > 0:35:10matter where you play, Swansea, Newcastle, it should be a privilege

0:35:10 > 0:35:15to play in the Premier League. It comes down to your environment. If

0:35:15 > 0:35:19you are going into training, you create a good environment you are

0:35:19 > 0:35:23going into everyday, it doesn't matter where you are because you

0:35:23 > 0:35:28have it every day and you are enjoying what you're doing. How bad

0:35:28 > 0:35:32weather yesterday, how diplomatic can you be?I don't think they were

0:35:32 > 0:35:42at the level of previous seasons. Because Abraham is up there and he

0:35:42 > 0:35:47can run in behind, they are a nice footballing team. Paul Clement said

0:35:47 > 0:35:51they are the bottom of the league because they haven't produced. It

0:35:51 > 0:35:54would be more refreshing to hear other managers coming out and saying

0:35:54 > 0:36:00that.Do you think he sounds like a man who thinks the game is nearly

0:36:00 > 0:36:06up? Some of the newspaper quotes are pretty defeatist. It goes back to

0:36:06 > 0:36:12the mentality of certain players. I can take it, you can take it, but

0:36:12 > 0:36:16other players will be saying, what is he saying that for, he is our

0:36:16 > 0:36:21manager. It is knowing who you can say those things do and who you

0:36:21 > 0:36:28can't.Don't the Swansea players need some home truths, they are the

0:36:28 > 0:36:32bottom of the Premier League. He did say they are as prepared as they can

0:36:32 > 0:36:39be Monday to Friday. The players say the training is brilliant, everyday

0:36:39 > 0:36:44there is something different, wonderful coach, still learning. He

0:36:44 > 0:36:48is still an inexperienced manager, he has only had two jobs. But he

0:36:48 > 0:36:54will learn from this. I like how he wants his team to play. He has been

0:36:54 > 0:36:58at Chelsea, Real Madrid, be in Munich, he is a good manager and

0:36:58 > 0:37:12good coach. Some managers are cutouts just to be a number two. Are

0:37:12 > 0:37:18some meant to be assistant managers. I think some are scared to take a

0:37:18 > 0:37:22manager's job because they are comfortable as a number two. But he

0:37:22 > 0:37:28wants to take it on the chin, he wants to be an number one. It is a

0:37:28 > 0:37:32difficult situation. If you have an manager will take you everywhere at

0:37:32 > 0:37:38a different club, why would you put yourself at risk? Some of those

0:37:38 > 0:37:45players have improved under him. Alfie Mawson. He did improve them

0:37:45 > 0:37:52defensively last season. Alfie Mawson, it is one. He seems to have

0:37:52 > 0:37:55developed under Paul Clement. They have only lost eight games by one

0:37:55 > 0:38:01goal. So you are talking fine margins, would you stick with him?

0:38:01 > 0:38:10It is fine margins.Tony Pulis is out of a job.What is the

0:38:10 > 0:38:16difference? Wayne Routledge is enjoying, developing players.Do you

0:38:16 > 0:38:20think the spectre of Tony Pulis is handing over clubs at the bottom

0:38:20 > 0:38:27having changed their manager? It is getting goals at the other end, not

0:38:27 > 0:38:31just defence.Yes, you sort your defence out, you can get one on the

0:38:31 > 0:38:36break. One goal margins are big in the Premier League. Defensively, if

0:38:36 > 0:38:40you are losing two or three, you are having to score four goals every

0:38:40 > 0:38:47game, it is going to be difficult. Do you think he is on his way?He

0:38:47 > 0:38:53sounds like a man who thinks he is. I have heard Tony Pulis saying

0:38:53 > 0:38:56similar things before he has left a job. There are certain things that

0:38:56 > 0:39:03managers when you know things have come to an end. And that for me was

0:39:03 > 0:39:10Paul Clement.Liverpool beat Brighton 5-1 yesterday. The free

0:39:10 > 0:39:16kick went under the wall. Philip Coutinho paid tribute to the analyst

0:39:16 > 0:39:23he has at the club for spotting that. Is it the kind of thing you

0:39:23 > 0:39:29look at during the week, what a wall does?Yes, we have done similar when

0:39:29 > 0:39:34I was at Rangers against Celtic. I looked at the goalkeeper and he was

0:39:34 > 0:39:42telling his wall to jump and that is what made me go under it. But small

0:39:42 > 0:39:47margins and the video analysis you can get now is incredible. Players

0:39:47 > 0:39:53look at it, some players don't. When I am playing I am looking at, can I

0:39:53 > 0:39:58get an edge, what about a set play, like we have just said, under the

0:39:58 > 0:40:02wall. Does a person do the same thing in certain situations. It is

0:40:02 > 0:40:08always getting that edge. I want to know who I am up against, do they

0:40:08 > 0:40:13take you on the outside, so I am prepared. I suppose you have too

0:40:13 > 0:40:16applaud the backroom staff who look for all those little details and

0:40:16 > 0:40:20they feed the players the information. It is down to the

0:40:20 > 0:40:24player whether they take it on board but after training, they analyse

0:40:24 > 0:40:29everything and look for the small details.Did you use call the

0:40:29 > 0:40:35Rangers goal?Yes. Under the wall. We won the game, which was nice as

0:40:35 > 0:40:43well.TV didn't do it as much justice, if you look at some of the

0:40:43 > 0:40:47stills in the papers, with how high Brighton are jumping and the ball

0:40:47 > 0:40:54going under. Some amazing photographs.They you at a dinner

0:40:54 > 0:40:59Hazard, a little chip and the goalkeeper going the wrong way.

0:40:59 > 0:41:01There are analysts at other clubs watching how you take free kicks

0:41:01 > 0:41:11penalties so you can double bluff yourself?Yes, you can do.This

0:41:11 > 0:41:14analyst will know I always put my penalties this way, do I go the

0:41:14 > 0:41:21other way?Wayne Rooney, practices penalties with Joe Hart and then he

0:41:21 > 0:41:30nearly missed it. Maybe it was a bit of luck, going under the wall.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32The 4pm kick off today is Manchester City

0:41:32 > 0:41:33at home to West Ham.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36City looking to go eight points clear again.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38West Ham have conceded 30 goals already,

0:41:38 > 0:41:42in advance of going to City.

0:41:42 > 0:41:48Can you see them holding out?Know, West Ham fans going into this game,

0:41:48 > 0:41:54they know it is their expectation. It is a free pass, every game. If

0:41:54 > 0:41:59they get anything out of it, great but it will be a tough day.Has been

0:41:59 > 0:42:03a tough start for David and will be worse in the next few games. The

0:42:03 > 0:42:08biggest thing for them will be going there. Manchester City will be big

0:42:08 > 0:42:13favourites. But they don't want to be losing three, four or five goals.

0:42:13 > 0:42:19If they can get away with 2-0, maybe Nick a point, it will be great but

0:42:19 > 0:42:23it will be a difficult afternoon. Nobody could think they could get

0:42:23 > 0:42:27everything out of it. Also it is a big game for Joe Hart. He's out of

0:42:27 > 0:42:33the team, so if a dream comes in and is well it will have a big knock-on

0:42:33 > 0:42:36affect the Joe Hart because he might stay out of the side and a World Cup

0:42:36 > 0:42:42chances go with it.Manchester City players, on yellow cards, Vincent

0:42:42 > 0:42:47Kompany is one of those, will he be rested in time to the Derby next

0:42:47 > 0:42:56week.It is interesting, will he rest him?He has enough options.He

0:42:56 > 0:43:01has a lot of games coming up. It will be the end of December before

0:43:01 > 0:43:08the booking is clear. He will be looking to see which game to pick.

0:43:08 > 0:43:13If West Ham do do anything, it will be interesting next week. The

0:43:13 > 0:43:19specially for the neutrals, they will be hoping West Ham can just get

0:43:19 > 0:43:24it.They probably will make changes. They are eight points clear, he

0:43:24 > 0:43:29would still think Manchester City will get this.If West Ham get this,

0:43:29 > 0:43:35it could give David Moyes the spark to get things going. He is popular

0:43:35 > 0:43:38among the football press, you think he deserves a break somewhere along

0:43:38 > 0:43:45the line. You almost want him to get a decent result to give him a bit of

0:43:45 > 0:43:49confidence, to kick-start his career.That's it, we are out of

0:43:49 > 0:43:50time.

0:43:50 > 0:43:52Thanks to Charlie, Alex and Shaun.

0:43:52 > 0:43:54Both of today's Premier League games are live on 5 Live.

0:43:54 > 0:43:57Highlights on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One tonight.

0:43:57 > 0:44:04Good bye.
