0:00:28 > 0:00:32Hello and welcome to Match Of The Day 2 Extra.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35We're on BBC Two, 5 Live, the BBC Sport website and app,

0:00:35 > 0:00:40as well as the iPlayer.

0:00:40 > 0:00:45Joining me today, former Leicester, Chelsea and Fulham goalkeeper

0:00:45 > 0:00:49Mark Schwarzer.

0:00:49 > 0:00:54Many other clubs as well. I get shouted that when I miss any out. I

0:00:54 > 0:00:56get shouted at.

0:00:56 > 0:00:57Burnley and

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Ireland's Jon Walters,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01and Oliver Holt, who is chief sports writer for the Mail On Sunday.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04As ever, we want to hear from you using the hashtag

0:01:04 > 0:01:05#bbcfootball on social media.

0:01:05 > 0:01:06Or you can text us on 85058.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07Here's what's coming up:

0:01:07 > 0:01:10What does the future holds for Alexis Sanchez. He has not travelled

0:01:10 > 0:01:13with the Arsenal squad to Bournemouth this lunchtime.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16David Moyes' West Ham score four at Huddersfield to move up to 11th

0:01:16 > 0:01:17and ease their relegation fears.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20Chelsea fail to score for the third time in a week as Leicester

0:01:20 > 0:01:22frustrate the champions at Stamford Bridge.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24And we'll be live at Anfield ahead of Liverpool against

0:01:24 > 0:01:26Manchester City at 4 o'clock.

0:01:26 > 0:01:32As far as the papers are concerned, the Sunday Times has this. Helping

0:01:32 > 0:01:35hand. Watford's controversial equaliser at home to Southampton

0:01:35 > 0:01:38yesterday.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41In the Sunday People Sport, "I'm In", with Jurgen Klopp joining

0:01:41 > 0:01:42the scramble to snap up Sanchez.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46The Sunday Mirror, "Sanchez Pep Talk".

0:01:46 > 0:01:50They claim that Guardiola will make a personal call to Alexis Sanchez,

0:01:50 > 0:01:54but they also claim that Liverpool have joined the race for the

0:01:54 > 0:02:00striker. We will start with Alexis Sanchez and the news that he has not

0:02:00 > 0:02:03travelled with Arsenal to Bournemouth. Mark Schwarzer, that

0:02:03 > 0:02:07would indicate he will be gone sooner rather than later.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11You would think so. I'm surprised he's still there now. The summer

0:02:11 > 0:02:16would have been the best time to get rid of him for 60 million. Arsene

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Wenger feels like he needs to replace him before he lets him go.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23That was the issue before the transfer window in the summer.Using

0:02:23 > 0:02:28same thing now. Because this has been such a circus since the summer

0:02:28 > 0:02:33and maybe even before them, Jon, if you are in that Arsenal squad going

0:02:33 > 0:02:38to Bournemouth today, would there be a sense of relief that he has been

0:02:38 > 0:02:42parked away and you can concentrate as a grip on this game?Quite

0:02:42 > 0:02:46possibly. It has turned into a sideshow. Six months left on his

0:02:46 > 0:02:55contract. Does he decide to stay? Is he going to be a bad egg for the

0:02:55 > 0:02:59rest of the season? There are leaving him out of the squad. The

0:02:59 > 0:03:04rating could be on the wall. How do you understand it? I am not sure it

0:03:04 > 0:03:09will be a relief to the Arsenal fans. It looks like they're about to

0:03:09 > 0:03:12sell their best player to Manchester United for the second time in a few

0:03:12 > 0:03:19years.You think it is united?I do not have any inside knowledge,

0:03:19 > 0:03:24needless to say, but from what I read, from my colleagues on social

0:03:24 > 0:03:29media this morning, that seems to be the favourite. I always assumed that

0:03:29 > 0:03:34it would be Manchester City, like most of us. Whoever it is, I think

0:03:34 > 0:03:38Arsenal have got into a bad habit of mismanaging these things. However

0:03:38 > 0:03:41they have done it, whatever you think about Liverpool losing their

0:03:41 > 0:03:47best player to Barcelona, they got £145 million for him. Arsenal are

0:03:47 > 0:03:52about to sell their best player to a domestic rival for a fraction of

0:03:52 > 0:03:56that, probably. It does not seem like good business. Is that

0:03:56 > 0:04:00mismanagement? Arsene Wenger this week, and I will bring in the others

0:04:00 > 0:04:05in a moment, Arsene Wenger said this is the way it will go in the future.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Players will run down their contracts and they and their

0:04:08 > 0:04:11representatives will take a higher percentage of the money because the

0:04:11 > 0:04:26transfer fee will not be there. He was highlighting Ross Barkley, not

0:04:28 > 0:04:30necessarily talking about his own players.Do you think he's trying to

0:04:30 > 0:04:33mask the mistakes that Arsenal have made? Up to a point. It will be

0:04:33 > 0:04:35interesting to hear what the Galicia. I think players will do

0:04:35 > 0:04:38that. It makes financial sense for them. It is down to the good

0:04:38 > 0:04:40management of the football club to make sure that does not happen. In

0:04:40 > 0:04:43your hand, what would you try and balance out between running a

0:04:43 > 0:04:48contract down or extending a contract when you say you have still

0:04:48 > 0:04:55got two years left on it?I am not in the Alexis Sanchez bracket.

0:04:55 > 0:05:00Unfortunately. I have never been in that situation where I have run a

0:05:00 > 0:05:04contract down. I always liked the security of knowing I will be at the

0:05:04 > 0:05:10club I'm giving myself to that club. With six months left, financial

0:05:10 > 0:05:15sense for him would be to run it down. But does he really need that?

0:05:15 > 0:05:21If he is going to go to United, Ollie says, what if he goes to City?

0:05:21 > 0:05:26He could win trophies and the Premier League this year.Financial

0:05:26 > 0:05:32security, is that why you prefer not to run the contract then?Yes, I

0:05:32 > 0:05:39would say so.Psychological? It is a bit of both. I know a club sort of

0:05:39 > 0:05:42want you if they are going to be offering you contracts for the

0:05:42 > 0:05:47length of time. You want to be at the club were you know your future

0:05:47 > 0:05:54is there. If you have a family, if he is down in London, and he is

0:05:54 > 0:05:58going to go to a team in Manchester, it he will have that side of it,

0:05:58 > 0:06:01moving them, he will have a few years at a certain club.There is a

0:06:01 > 0:06:07lot going on buying the scenes. The older you are, it is about family

0:06:07 > 0:06:10security, continuity, knowing that I have been here for a couple of

0:06:10 > 0:06:24years, am I going to stay longer? It helps your family be settled. Your

0:06:29 > 0:06:32kids are at school. That comes into it. With Alexis Sanchez, it comes

0:06:32 > 0:06:35down to what his ambitions are. Does he want to win trophies. It does not

0:06:35 > 0:06:38look like that will happen at Arsenal. If he went to Manchester

0:06:38 > 0:06:40City, it would be a great opportunity to start winning major

0:06:40 > 0:06:43titles. If he were to choose United, you would say, United are massive

0:06:43 > 0:06:47club, one of the biggest in the world, can they match Man City going

0:06:47 > 0:06:51forward with a player like Alexis Sanchez? Him playing at his best

0:06:51 > 0:06:55would lift them to another level. When you look at the systems that

0:06:55 > 0:07:00they play, is he better suited to the Man City system, three front

0:07:00 > 0:07:06players to all intents and purposes, whether it be Raheem Sterling, Leroy

0:07:06 > 0:07:12Sane, or Aguero and Jesus. That front three, rather than for the

0:07:12 > 0:07:14right weight, which is what would happen with United, supporting

0:07:14 > 0:07:19Lukaku?

0:07:19 > 0:07:23Lukaku?The way that City play football, it is awesome. They would

0:07:23 > 0:07:29find a spot in the side. Alexis Sanchez worked his socks off the

0:07:29 > 0:07:35entire game, nonstop racing. That is how City play. He has not done that

0:07:35 > 0:07:38recently. That is the frustration for a lot of Arsenal fans and the

0:07:38 > 0:07:42outside world. This man can do it, but he does not do it regularly for

0:07:42 > 0:07:51Arsenal.United need him more than City. As dominant as Man City are,

0:07:51 > 0:07:55at eye do not think it would be great for them to seem good to Man

0:07:55 > 0:07:59United. I think he would improve Manchester united a great deal, and

0:07:59 > 0:08:05possibly make them a player in the Champions League as well. He has got

0:08:05 > 0:08:09the power to improve Manchester United's season considerably.But

0:08:09 > 0:08:15you can balance it out and say, if you're Manchester City, we are

0:08:15 > 0:08:18strong enough, even though it is Alexis Sanchez, let's take the high

0:08:18 > 0:08:24moral ground, we do not need them, we have settled, happy squad. You

0:08:24 > 0:08:29can see his behaviour sometimes. Why rock the boat? I overheard two Man

0:08:29 > 0:08:35City fans last week discussing whether he would, if he came, be the

0:08:35 > 0:08:40new Rodney Marsh, who disrupted Manchester City at that time.Yes,

0:08:40 > 0:08:45disrupted Malcolm Allison's team. I can see that point. Manchester

0:08:45 > 0:08:50United need him more than Manchester City do. Maybe that is the reason

0:08:50 > 0:08:56why this window appears to have for Manchester United. City, you would

0:08:56 > 0:09:00think, whatever happens to Alexis Sanchez, it will not change the

0:09:00 > 0:09:04destination of the title this season. It will be a massive boost

0:09:04 > 0:09:09for Manchester United in the medium to long term if they get him.You

0:09:09 > 0:09:15can use the hashed out if you want to get in touch with us through the

0:09:15 > 0:09:17afternoon, particularly Arsenal fans. We will go to Bournemouth

0:09:17 > 0:09:21shortly to get the team news from the Bournemouth- Arsenal game. Let's

0:09:21 > 0:09:24talk about West Ham.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27West Ham are up to eleventh after winning 4-1 at Huddersfield.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31They were 18th when David Moyes took over.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35Should lots of people be eating humble pie at the moment, Mark

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Schwarzer?Lots of people were surprised that West Ham went with

0:09:38 > 0:09:42David Moyes after the way things had gone with him previously,

0:09:42 > 0:09:47particularly at Sunderland. What he has done has been brilliant. He has

0:09:47 > 0:09:51turned their fortunes completely around. He has surprised me and how

0:09:51 > 0:09:55he has been able to do that. Arnautovic is a player that the

0:09:55 > 0:10:00biggest criticism anyone put towards him was he did not have the

0:10:00 > 0:10:04consistency. Jon will vouch for that at Stoke, he showed glimpses of

0:10:04 > 0:10:08being that player that they signed from Inter Milan. He was at Inter

0:10:08 > 0:10:13Milan because he was a phenomenal player. He was not showing that

0:10:13 > 0:10:17regularly. Since the arrival of David Moyes, and it is no

0:10:17 > 0:10:21coincidence, it has to be down to David Moyes. Having a different

0:10:21 > 0:10:26approach, demanding more, that has worked well. The last time you were

0:10:26 > 0:10:30on we spoke about Marko Arnautovic and the frustrations that there

0:10:30 > 0:10:34could be from playing with him. Do you think that the credit that

0:10:34 > 0:10:39should go to Moyes is to change the position of Arnautovic, put him or

0:10:39 > 0:10:43through the middle, where he does not have to track back as much?I

0:10:43 > 0:10:47think he can play across the front. If you get him playing, he is such

0:10:47 > 0:10:54an asset. He has everything. A lot of credit has to go to David Moyes

0:10:54 > 0:11:01for that. He has come in 90 has been phenomenal. He has got everything,

0:11:01 > 0:11:07strength, pace, movement, left foot, right foot, the skills. He has

0:11:07 > 0:11:12greater freedom now? He does not have to track back as much.Quite

0:11:12 > 0:11:16possibly. Is it the position or is it more in his head? I think with a

0:11:16 > 0:11:21player like him, he can play anywhere. If you get it right in his

0:11:21 > 0:11:27head, he can be fantastic, as he is showing no.I think it is the head.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Whatever David Moyes has done, spoke to him, put his arm around him, got

0:11:31 > 0:11:35him playing in a certain way, then he's up there with the best players

0:11:35 > 0:11:42I have played with or against. On discipline and tracking back and all

0:11:42 > 0:11:49of that, is there a roll, a space in modern football, for people who may

0:11:49 > 0:11:52be do not have the greatest of discipline when it comes to work

0:11:52 > 0:11:59ethic, do you think?Yes. Some teams will play more counterattack, some

0:11:59 > 0:12:04teams will leave three up, or two up, and leave a player, and if he

0:12:04 > 0:12:08can produce when he is doing that, you can afford that in your team,

0:12:08 > 0:12:13but he has got to produce. If you can leave a player to not work as

0:12:13 > 0:12:18much as the team and he has a flair player, producing goals and assists,

0:12:18 > 0:12:22dragging the team up, holding the ball, there is a place for him.Do

0:12:22 > 0:12:27you need to find

0:12:34 > 0:12:37the manager that can get the best out of him in David Moyes?I do not

0:12:37 > 0:12:40think Mark Hughes ever got the best consistently out of him. I know it

0:12:40 > 0:12:43is a short period of time, but the managers getting the best out of

0:12:43 > 0:12:46him. When Sun Alex was at QPR, Neil Warnock would not let him touch the

0:12:46 > 0:12:50ball in his own half.He was basically giving a minder in Shaun

0:12:50 > 0:12:54Derry. He said, you will have to do all the running for Adel Taarabt,

0:12:54 > 0:13:00and you allow him to do his thing.I think that works, up to a point,

0:13:00 > 0:13:04with certain players. If a player is that important to a team creatively,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07which at that player was, because they did not have anyone else of

0:13:07 > 0:13:15that nature, I guess what we would call a luxury player. There seems to

0:13:15 > 0:13:21me to be less and less room for the old conventional Number 10, who

0:13:21 > 0:13:25drifts, and like Mark Schwarzer was saying earlier, does not track back.

0:13:25 > 0:13:31It is the balance. Let's not take away from Marko Arnautovic. They can

0:13:31 > 0:13:34track back. Plenty of times when we played together, he was in his own

0:13:34 > 0:13:39box, picking up the ball. But you want him to get the ball in the

0:13:39 > 0:13:42opposition half. Do you leave him one against one against the right

0:13:42 > 0:13:47back or centre-half, or do you want him defending? He can do it. Let me

0:13:47 > 0:13:54read some tweets. Freedom to play, be creative, not be imprisoned by

0:13:54 > 0:13:59the rigidity of the state formation, it is proper football. West Ham

0:13:59 > 0:14:03says, playing without a recognised striker at the moment under David

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Moyes, the freedom Arnautovic has will be enhanced by PC players.

0:14:06 > 0:14:11Michael says Arnautovic is a confidence player. He needs to feel

0:14:11 > 0:14:15loved and wanted. Right now he has all three things in his favour. If

0:14:15 > 0:14:18West Ham can sign a holding defensive midfielder and a Pizzi

0:14:18 > 0:14:23right winger we would be fine and Arnautovic could thrive. Do you

0:14:23 > 0:14:29think, Oliver Holt, you can be a good manager even if you have had a

0:14:29 > 0:14:40relatively bad four years?I do.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45I think David Moyes is a good example of that. You say that lots

0:14:45 > 0:14:47of people are eating humble pie. They are. When David Moyes joined

0:14:47 > 0:14:50West Ham, he had a few supporters in the media. That is because people

0:14:50 > 0:14:53have the memory of what he achieved that Everton. On Match Of The Day

0:14:53 > 0:14:56last night, he has become the fourth manager in Premier League history to

0:14:56 > 0:15:02have 12-handed game. Yes. If you're around long enough that will happen.

0:15:02 > 0:15:06What happened with him, he lost lots of confidence at Man United and made

0:15:06 > 0:15:11a couple of bad choices, in my opinion. Sunderland seems to be a

0:15:11 > 0:15:17graveyard for ambitious managers.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24If he got off to a bad start at West Ham that probably would have been

0:15:24 > 0:15:28the end of him as a top-flight manager in England. And I think he

0:15:28 > 0:15:32has proved that you can have bad times and come back. It's early days

0:15:32 > 0:15:39but he's made a terrific start.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41but he's made a terrific start.I think it happens with players as

0:15:41 > 0:15:44well. They have times where they struggle and then they make a move,

0:15:44 > 0:15:49or even if they don't, a manager comes in, there is an uplift. David

0:15:49 > 0:15:55Moyes has a great record at Everton. What he did at that club, that

0:15:55 > 0:16:00stability there, he created that, and then the move to Manchester

0:16:00 > 0:16:04United just didn't work out for him and I think it would have been

0:16:04 > 0:16:08difficult for anyone to replace Alex Ferguson in that first year. And

0:16:08 > 0:16:12then afterwards, of course, it was a bad time for him at Sunderland. But

0:16:12 > 0:16:18he's showing. I'm sure he's learned a lot and he's a different person.

0:16:18 > 0:16:23Some people have said to me about players, they might do very, very

0:16:23 > 0:16:27well at a middling Premier League club or top half Premier League

0:16:27 > 0:16:33club, and then they get a move to a top six club and they struggle. They

0:16:33 > 0:16:37get -- they then get sold to someone else and they struggle again, partly

0:16:37 > 0:16:40because of being racked with some kind of self doubt that they

0:16:40 > 0:16:45couldn't cut it at the top. There's definitely a part of that because

0:16:45 > 0:16:50when I went to Chelsea from Fulham, just the weight of expectation to

0:16:50 > 0:16:53win every single game when you go through that door, to win every

0:16:53 > 0:17:03trophy you are involved in, it's enormous. Some have just struggle to

0:17:03 > 0:17:06play at the club because you are just in the glimpses and all of a

0:17:06 > 0:17:11sudden you have one thing -- one or two things to do in the game and

0:17:11 > 0:17:14they can't deliver at that moment. As a manager I can only imagine it

0:17:14 > 0:17:18must be tenfold, 50 fold that because of the pressure, the weight,

0:17:18 > 0:17:24the size of the club.Exactly what Mark is saying. The pressure is

0:17:24 > 0:17:29probably not on as much. The pressure is on different ways if

0:17:29 > 0:17:35you're down at the bottom but if you've got to produce consistently,

0:17:35 > 0:17:43and for the money you are spending as well. When I was Fulham, and it's

0:17:43 > 0:17:47a fantastic middle club, the pressure was so different in

0:17:47 > 0:17:56comparison. Being in the north-east and then going to North London,

0:17:56 > 0:18:00Fulham, it's a great family club. We had an amazing time there but I was

0:18:00 > 0:18:05blown away by... There pressure but there's not a lot of pressure. Then

0:18:05 > 0:18:10you make that step across, that very short step across to Chelsea, which

0:18:10 > 0:18:19is, by turns of gradient, enormous. Did you have any self-doubt after he

0:18:19 > 0:18:21said that Hugh?He was trying to mess with me!

0:18:21 > 0:18:31LAUGHTER But did you?I got it. I had to

0:18:31 > 0:18:36change my game when I went there as well. Because at Fulham,

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Middlesbrough, you are not dominating every game. You on the

0:18:39 > 0:18:44back foot, you were playing a deeper line, the defenders would be per. At

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Chelsea, you are the team attacking all the time so as a goalkeeper

0:18:47 > 0:18:54you've got to play higher up the pitch. You've got to play between

0:18:54 > 0:18:58the defenders and yourself. And it's a mindset, it's a change in the way

0:18:58 > 0:19:04you play. It seems quite little but it's a big change you have to make.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08It happens even more so with somebody going to United and the

0:19:08 > 0:19:17fans then, OK, entertain us. We expect this, that football.I also

0:19:17 > 0:19:23think some managers and players, they suit some kind of club. It's

0:19:23 > 0:19:27often said about Jose Mourinho, isn't it? He's absolutely his best

0:19:27 > 0:19:32when he was at Porto and then Inter Milan. In both cases they weren't

0:19:32 > 0:19:38really expected to win. They weren't really expected to win it and he

0:19:38 > 0:19:42massively overachieved at those clubs and it suited him better,

0:19:42 > 0:19:52perhaps, than being at the biggest clubs in the world. We have had this

0:19:52 > 0:19:56text, some of the papers linking Liverpool to this move. Let some

0:19:56 > 0:20:00overpay for him. Definitely the level of player Liverpool need, not

0:20:00 > 0:20:03that either has to be brought in right now. We know Alexis Sanchez is

0:20:03 > 0:20:11up with Arsenal. Confirmation of that team sheet for

0:20:11 > 0:20:18this game. My understanding is Alexis Sanchez took full part in

0:20:18 > 0:20:21training yesterday. I haven't heard what Arsene Wenger has said about it

0:20:21 > 0:20:24but it does point to that imminent move away either to Manchester City

0:20:24 > 0:20:30or Manchester United. Bournemouth might sense a real opportunity here.

0:20:30 > 0:20:42Peter check is in goal. Otherwise it's the same team who were in the

0:20:42 > 0:20:46League Cup of the semifinal playing on Wednesday. -- Petr Cech is in

0:20:46 > 0:20:52goal.

0:20:52 > 0:21:01goal. Josh King, Jermain Defoe and Stanislas are all unavailable.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05Stanislas are all unavailable. The three centre-backs for Bournemouth,

0:21:05 > 0:21:17Charlie Daniels on the flanks. I will ask you, Mark, do Arsenal

0:21:17 > 0:21:24look ordinary without those players? Without Sanchez? They certainly

0:21:24 > 0:21:30don't look as formidable. Both of those players can be frustrating and

0:21:30 > 0:21:35it's been well-documented -- documented because Sanchez, Sanchez

0:21:35 > 0:21:44clearly upset that he's not moving at the end of the transfer window,

0:21:44 > 0:21:49and Ozil has looked disinterested, which is where he's received that

0:21:49 > 0:21:53criticism, but they are, on their day, world-class players, both of

0:21:53 > 0:21:58them, and without them, you could argue, as we were saying before, you

0:21:58 > 0:22:01can forget about it and move on but still think they bring that extra

0:22:01 > 0:22:07and creativity and level of performance that normally those

0:22:07 > 0:22:11players, if any, can produce that. We talked about David Moyes. Let's

0:22:11 > 0:22:17talk about Roy Hodgson having a big impact at Crystal Palace. Five

0:22:17 > 0:22:20points clear of the rotations owed. Your Burnley team discovered

0:22:20 > 0:22:26yesterday they are a tough nut to crack. -- five points clear of the

0:22:26 > 0:22:35relegation zone.Well-organised. We didn't cause them to many problems.

0:22:35 > 0:22:40They had three big powerful boys at the front and though at times they

0:22:40 > 0:22:45did chase back a lot, we left them quite a lot, where they could just

0:22:45 > 0:22:57break. And they interchange very well and he's done really well with

0:22:57 > 0:23:03them. I was speaking to a friend at the club yesterday who said Hodgson

0:23:03 > 0:23:11is the best manager he's ever played under. The way he is with the

0:23:11 > 0:23:15players, not just in the team, but out of the team as well, so high

0:23:15 > 0:23:19praise for him. When you talk about Crystal Palace being organised,

0:23:19 > 0:23:24we've talked about David Moyes organising West Ham. Thirdly

0:23:24 > 0:23:28well-organised. As a fine new sort of think it should be a given that

0:23:28 > 0:23:32teams are well-organised because you have time to prepare for games, and

0:23:32 > 0:23:37that seems a fairly obvious thing a coach could do. Can you quantify how

0:23:37 > 0:23:41difficult it is to organise a football team? Have you been in

0:23:41 > 0:23:45disorganised teams in your life? Definitely. So many egos you have to

0:23:45 > 0:23:50juggle as a manager as well. And if you look at the injuries Crystal

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Palace have, some players with serious injury -- injuries will be

0:23:53 > 0:24:04playing in the team, and it's down to how you play as well. How do you

0:24:04 > 0:24:08get the best out of your best players? But to be organised, is the

0:24:08 > 0:24:14key to it this shape training? You know, where there is no ball and you

0:24:14 > 0:24:17put a ball somewhere on the pitch and then the manager tells you where

0:24:17 > 0:24:24you need to be if the ball is there? Or is that too Basic? As a player, I

0:24:24 > 0:24:33will know where to be on the pitch. Some managers would like that, would

0:24:33 > 0:24:37like to dictate the shape through the week and other managers would

0:24:37 > 0:24:41expect players to know that. It's also knowing your players. You get

0:24:41 > 0:24:47somebody like a la Everton, and he's organised that. -- somebody like

0:24:47 > 0:24:56Alan -- some alibis. A more solid base to work from. It's knowing your

0:24:56 > 0:25:05players and how you want them to work as well.Yesterday it was that

0:25:05 > 0:25:11Hodgson has energised the place. So full of energy. He's 70, isn't he?

0:25:11 > 0:25:15His enthusiasm has swept through the whole club.Yes, I heard that

0:25:15 > 0:25:20interview and I think there was a lot of question marks when he was

0:25:20 > 0:25:27given that job and in Crystal Palace giving it to him, because of his age

0:25:27 > 0:25:30and also because of what happened with England, but I think we are

0:25:30 > 0:25:37talking about the redemption songs of David Moyes. I think he's a very

0:25:37 > 0:25:43decent guy, Roy. He is a terrific manager and he was vilified, really,

0:25:43 > 0:25:46as most England managers are when things go wrong, and I think a lot

0:25:46 > 0:25:50of people are just very pleased for him that that wasn't the end of the

0:25:50 > 0:25:56story, the Iceland thing, and he would take issue with this, that he

0:25:56 > 0:26:01had a reputation to repair, but nevertheless, I'm glad the last

0:26:01 > 0:26:11memory of him was not as a manager with the defeat to Iceland.Your

0:26:11 > 0:26:14trumpet might be under the desk if you want to blow it!I worked with

0:26:14 > 0:26:22him for two years and I get what he said, one of the best managers he's

0:26:22 > 0:26:27worked under. At times is the simplicity. It's also that

0:26:27 > 0:26:32repetition. Throughout my career, I've been at clubs where you talk

0:26:32 > 0:26:37about players, you get to a point where you're frustrated because you

0:26:37 > 0:26:42are losing games, you concede basic goals, and you go to the manager and

0:26:42 > 0:26:46say, we need to get back to the basics, we need to get organised, we

0:26:46 > 0:26:52need to get our shape going, but the manager's response would be, I want

0:26:52 > 0:26:55you to enjoy football and enjoy training, I don't want to put you

0:26:55 > 0:26:58through those basic sessions, but that's what brings you results. I've

0:26:58 > 0:27:01had a number of managers who brought you back down to basics and almost

0:27:01 > 0:27:13walk you through things.It's a way of enforcing individual discipline.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16Sometimes the simplest things can make the difference, yes. You watch

0:27:16 > 0:27:20any sort of play, when something goes wrong, it's generally a basic

0:27:20 > 0:27:25mistake. If not a complicated one. People overcome hate football all

0:27:25 > 0:27:30the time and as managers I think more of them should go back to the

0:27:30 > 0:27:37basics of training. -- people overcomplicate football all the

0:27:37 > 0:27:43time. I think the very core of it should be the basics and working on

0:27:43 > 0:27:56it.And that is the basics, the enjoyment.Roy was very much against

0:27:56 > 0:28:00playing small sided games at the end of the session. More often than not

0:28:00 > 0:28:03he would get the hump and say, you sort it out, because he just didn't

0:28:03 > 0:28:09want it. He would say, you've worked so hard during this basic shape

0:28:09 > 0:28:13organisation, you've had enough. Go get your feet up and rest. But the

0:28:13 > 0:28:19boys were like, I want to play a small side game.#bbcfootball if you

0:28:19 > 0:28:26want to get in touch. Andy, what can you say that's not already been said

0:28:26 > 0:28:30about our manager? Honest, statesman-like, erudite. The list

0:28:30 > 0:28:40goes on. Another says, Manager of the Year. The big game today,

0:28:40 > 0:28:47Liverpool versus Manchester City. Steve Wilson is there for us. Let's

0:28:47 > 0:28:52start with the big news, Steve, which is it looks like there is no

0:28:52 > 0:28:57Virgil Van Dijk for Liverpool this afternoon?Yes, and obviously we

0:28:57 > 0:29:00won't get confirmation of that team for a couple of hours yet but it is

0:29:00 > 0:29:05being reported by the Liverpool Echo on their social media sites, and I

0:29:05 > 0:29:09understand from around the place here, that it is right that Virgil

0:29:09 > 0:29:13Van Dijk has tight hamstrings and won't be risked today. Obviously a

0:29:13 > 0:29:17major blow for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool taking on Manchester City

0:29:17 > 0:29:24today. The first game post Phillippe Coutinho and all that. At that

0:29:24 > 0:29:28instant return in the FA Cup victory over Everton but the Dutchman will

0:29:28 > 0:29:32not be involved, I understand, for Liverpool.Do you think Liverpool

0:29:32 > 0:29:36has a point to prove after what happened in the first game earlier

0:29:36 > 0:29:41in the season?I think they think they have a point to prove. I think

0:29:41 > 0:29:45they feel that red card was harsh and there have been similar

0:29:45 > 0:29:48incidents over the course of the season since then that have not

0:29:48 > 0:29:52resulted in red cards so you would perhaps have a certain sympathy with

0:29:52 > 0:29:54that point of view. Liverpool have a fantastic record here against

0:29:54 > 0:30:01managers that it -- against Manchester City, but it is strange

0:30:01 > 0:30:07that City have only won once on this ground since 1981, which is

0:30:07 > 0:30:10remarkable, so Liverpool, with or without Phillippe Coutinho,

0:30:10 > 0:30:13obviously without, without Van Dijk, are coming into this game believing

0:30:13 > 0:30:17this is a battle they can win. Nobody here thinks they will

0:30:17 > 0:30:22overhaul Manchester City at the top of the table but do think they can

0:30:22 > 0:30:26overhaul them over 90 minutes and I think Liverpool think they can

0:30:26 > 0:30:30finish second behind Manchester City in the Premier League. A big win

0:30:30 > 0:30:33today, unlikely though that would seem against the runaway leaders,

0:30:33 > 0:30:37actually would put Liverpool second in the table.Alexis Sanchez has

0:30:37 > 0:30:42been linked with both of those clubs, more with the visitors than

0:30:42 > 0:30:47the home team, but as you say, it is early and both representatives might

0:30:47 > 0:30:53not be there, but have you heard anything?Well, there have been

0:30:53 > 0:30:57people very close to Liverpool here saying that any interest that has

0:30:57 > 0:31:01been drummed up in the papers about Alexis Sanchez has basically been

0:31:01 > 0:31:06driven from his agent's end. There are people here who don't believe

0:31:06 > 0:31:11Liverpool have a serious interest in signing him but I just think that

0:31:11 > 0:31:14there's every chance that Alexis Sanchez will be where you are now,

0:31:14 > 0:31:19in the city of Manchester, win the next 24, 36 hours. What we don't

0:31:19 > 0:31:24know yet is whether it is City or United, but I don't think it will be

0:31:24 > 0:31:31Liverpool.Thank you very much, Steve. Commentary on BBC Radio 5Live

0:31:31 > 0:31:38from 4pm Anfield. Arsene Wenger has said that a resolution on Sanchez's

0:31:38 > 0:31:42future is imminent. Don't read too much into it because even I don't

0:31:42 > 0:31:47really know what way it will go! Zane says, if Sanchez and Walcott

0:31:47 > 0:31:54both leave, surely we need at least two to replace those three, not one.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58Another says, this is a relief. No player is bigger than the club. I

0:31:58 > 0:32:03will be glad to see the back of him. Rick says, we wouldn't find before

0:32:03 > 0:32:07Sanchez came, actually better. Arsenal is bitter -- better than one

0:32:07 > 0:32:14man. You can get in touch on #bbcfootball. Burn be played City in

0:32:14 > 0:32:24the cup last weekend. What did you make of them? -- burn played City.

0:32:25 > 0:32:31Excellent. I Teimana 3-1 down. I was chasing shadows. They work so hard

0:32:31 > 0:32:35off the ball. When they lose the ball, the front they are chasing,

0:32:35 > 0:32:40the middle they are chasing, and the back four are right up, and they do

0:32:40 > 0:32:44not amble up, it is a full on Sprint. The price the pitch and they

0:32:44 > 0:32:49want to win the ball back in the opposition half. He has the whole

0:32:49 > 0:32:57team, to a man, working.With that quality. Do

0:33:01 > 0:33:04quality. Do you need to go long war often than not to be that? They can

0:33:04 > 0:33:07leave that space in behind and play out. It is basic. The pressing and

0:33:07 > 0:33:12winning. It is similar to Liverpool in terms of how the press. It is

0:33:12 > 0:33:17foul on. They do not give you a break. If you look at how each

0:33:17 > 0:33:21player runs, if you get any player of that quality to work so hard for

0:33:21 > 0:33:26the team when they get the ball, and in the opposition have, it is not

0:33:26 > 0:33:30impossible to play against, but very difficult.Do they look at the

0:33:30 > 0:33:35shaping training? I think they do. They have a system they play. They

0:33:35 > 0:33:40have world-class players, but I think, and I have spoken to some of

0:33:40 > 0:33:43the players, and their training sessions are really foul on, very

0:33:43 > 0:33:49technical, so it is clear that they are at another level, because of the

0:33:49 > 0:33:53personnel that they have and the manager they have, but they will go

0:33:53 > 0:33:57through things and be repetitive.I have got to read this. Graeme

0:33:57 > 0:34:01Souness' column in the Sunday Times each week is well worth reading. It

0:34:01 > 0:34:07is certainly thought-provoking whether you agree or not. He says

0:34:07 > 0:34:10that Virgil van Dijk is the best centre back Liverpool have had since

0:34:10 > 0:34:19Alan Hansen.

0:34:19 > 0:34:20"The ball

0:34:20 > 0:34:21is an enemy for Eliaquim Mangala.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23He's in the wrong movie at Manchester City.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25That's why they should have gone for Van Dijk."

0:34:25 > 0:34:30I am a fan of Graeme Souness and his punditry, written and televised.

0:34:30 > 0:34:36Virgil van Dijk appears to be a class act. I think eyebrows are

0:34:36 > 0:34:39raised when people say, I think somebody said he was a bargain

0:34:39 > 0:34:48recently. We will see. I hope he is a great signing for Liverpool. It is

0:34:48 > 0:34:52early days. What he has shown a previous club suggests he will be a

0:34:52 > 0:34:57fantastic signing, and I think something that lots of people have

0:34:57 > 0:35:02said, a leader. That is something that Liverpool need. I am not saying

0:35:02 > 0:35:07they have not got any leaders but they need the addition of another

0:35:07 > 0:35:12strong character. It is a real shame he's playing today. I think this is

0:35:12 > 0:35:19the best chance of City being upset this season. It is the hardest game

0:35:19 > 0:35:25they have left, quite possibly. A Liverpool team in form, even without

0:35:25 > 0:35:31Coutinho, they would have a decent chance at home, at Anfield, in as

0:35:31 > 0:35:36close to a cauldron as we have got in English football now. They have

0:35:36 > 0:35:41got a real chance. That chance is lessened by van Dijk not being

0:35:41 > 0:35:45available.Should City have gone for van Dijk?I am surprised they did

0:35:45 > 0:35:51not. It is a massive game for Liverpool. Ollie is right in saying

0:35:51 > 0:35:55he is a really good player. He has done well wherever he has played. He

0:35:55 > 0:35:59has progressed from Celtic to Southampton. This is another level

0:35:59 > 0:36:04again. When you look at the one appearance he has had so far, he won

0:36:04 > 0:36:07everything in the air, he had authority and looked like nothing

0:36:07 > 0:36:12would get past him, then he popped up and scored the winner. You have

0:36:12 > 0:36:16that added bonus. It will be interesting to see him and Joel

0:36:16 > 0:36:24Matip together. That could be a

0:36:31 > 0:36:33formidable defensive pairing. Imagine trying to run up against

0:36:33 > 0:36:36those two? He is a tough player to come up against, a threat in both

0:36:36 > 0:36:39boxes. He has had a great start. Not playing a lot of football in the

0:36:39 > 0:36:42last couple of weeks, his first game, probably foul on training as

0:36:42 > 0:36:44well.He will be missed by Liverpool. Arsene Wenger has said

0:36:44 > 0:36:46more the television about Alexis Sanchez. Arsene Wenger says, he is

0:36:46 > 0:36:50being vague at the moment. The situation is not completely decided

0:36:50 > 0:36:54one way or the other, so I left at home. Rio Ferdinand has tweeted on

0:36:54 > 0:37:02the subject. I have just seen Sanchez is not in the Arsenal squad

0:37:02 > 0:37:05today so I am en route to use them to direct him to Old Trafford. Use

0:37:05 > 0:37:11the hash tag if you want to get in touch.Should Stoke point Martin

0:37:11 > 0:37:17O'Neill? I am a Stoke fan, having been there for so long. Andy Ireland

0:37:17 > 0:37:22player. If I was Stoke, I would be clambering to appoint him. Why?

0:37:22 > 0:37:30Going back to simplicity. Stoke Neagle organisation.

0:37:30 > 0:37:34Neagle organisation. -- need organisation. They are down in the

0:37:34 > 0:37:39bottom three, but such a fantastic club. I hope they get out, and

0:37:39 > 0:37:42appointing him, with a Roy Keane would come with them as well, I do

0:37:42 > 0:37:48not know the ins and outs, I do not know if he has been offered it, with

0:37:48 > 0:37:52Ireland, we were fourth favourites to get out of the group behind

0:37:52 > 0:37:57Serbia, Austria, Wales, everyone gave us no chance, and lots of

0:37:57 > 0:38:02people are judging him on the Denmark game, will it was a terrible

0:38:02 > 0:38:06result, but if you look at how we have done under him, with Ireland, I

0:38:06 > 0:38:11can only sing his praises.Do you think that because he received so

0:38:11 > 0:38:18much criticism for the Denmark game, and because he feels that maybe now

0:38:18 > 0:38:22is the time, I know you cannot speak for him, but the criticism has hurt

0:38:22 > 0:38:30him after the Denmark game?I cannot speak for him, as you have said.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33Everything was rosy until that hammering. If you look at our record

0:38:33 > 0:38:39under him with Ireland, how we did in the Euros, where we got two in

0:38:39 > 0:38:43the group, and a couple of decisions, a winner Shane Duffy

0:38:43 > 0:38:47should have had against Austria was taken away in the last minute, a few

0:38:47 > 0:38:51decisions, and we got down to one game, and you cannot be judged on

0:38:51 > 0:38:56that one game against Denmark. Only the players can produce on the pitch

0:38:56 > 0:39:02at the time. If you look at his record as Ireland manager, and

0:39:02 > 0:39:07previous clubs he has been at, if I was Stoke, I would be desperately

0:39:07 > 0:39:12trying to get him to sign.It would be basics first, and I mean that in

0:39:12 > 0:39:16a complimentary way, after the discussions we have had?As a

0:39:16 > 0:39:20player, you want to play for him. His former players have said, you

0:39:20 > 0:39:25want to play for him. You cannot put it down to anything. It is very

0:39:25 > 0:39:35difficult but it is going

0:39:35 > 0:39:37difficult but it is going back to basics.Have Stoke lasted identity,

0:39:37 > 0:39:39their playing style, they have changed dramatically from when Tony

0:39:39 > 0:39:41Pulis left? Mark Hughes try to have this period of adaptation,

0:39:41 > 0:39:45attacking. When you watch Stoke, it seems like they do not really have a

0:39:45 > 0:39:50way of playing?Quite possibly. No one used to like coming to Stoke

0:39:50 > 0:39:54when we were there. Everyone hated it. That has changed over the last

0:39:54 > 0:39:59couple of years. It needs to go back to being the way it was. When that

0:39:59 > 0:40:02place is rocking, the Kreder behind the team, there is no other place

0:40:02 > 0:40:09like it. It is terrible for other teams to come and play. There was a

0:40:09 > 0:40:13fantastic atmosphere. Talking about cauldrons, when Stoke were doing

0:40:13 > 0:40:20well, that was a cauldron. We were talking about some managers and

0:40:20 > 0:40:24their characters sitting clubs. I can see Martin O'Neill's character

0:40:24 > 0:40:29sitting Stoke. That's like underdog thing. You will not get any light

0:40:29 > 0:40:35and shade from me in terms of disagreeing with Jon. I am a massive

0:40:35 > 0:40:39fan of Martin O'Neill and I think he would be a good appointment.You

0:40:39 > 0:40:45know the Stoke squad. Would it be good for him to take Roy with him?

0:40:45 > 0:40:51Yes.

0:40:51 > 0:40:55Yes. That is not to say that Martin is a soft touch. You do not want to

0:40:55 > 0:41:01get on the wrong side of him. He will tell you just as much as Roy,

0:41:01 > 0:41:09pull your weight. Is he in the same sort of mould as Tony Pulis? The man

0:41:09 > 0:41:13manager, an older style generation of manager. He has his way, he is

0:41:13 > 0:41:17relentless in the way he wants to play, and what he wants to instil in

0:41:17 > 0:41:22his players. Each manager is different, but then you can see how

0:41:22 > 0:41:27David Moyes has gone at West Ham, and David might -- and Roy Hodgson

0:41:27 > 0:41:31at Crystal Palace. I think Stoke need Martin O'Neill to do a similar

0:41:31 > 0:41:36job at Stoke.Paul says I think he has overstayed his time with the

0:41:36 > 0:41:39Republic of Ireland team. George says he is a good manager and Stoke

0:41:39 > 0:41:44are not in a position to take a big gamble. Gavin, an overrated manager.

0:41:44 > 0:41:53I do not expect him to create miracles at Stoke. Use the hash tag.

0:41:53 > 0:42:00Or you can text. You work with Marcus and his coaching staff. --

0:42:00 > 0:42:06you work with Mark Hughes and his coaching staff. What will Eddie

0:42:06 > 0:42:09Niedzwiecki do? He was very hands-on. Mark Bowen on the

0:42:09 > 0:42:17sidelines. They had very little input on the day-to-day basis. They

0:42:17 > 0:42:20dipped in and out, but Eddie Niedzwiecki did every bit of the

0:42:20 > 0:42:25session. That side of things will not change. Obviously the man in

0:42:25 > 0:42:27charge is no Eddie Niedzwiecki, taking responsibility, but he will

0:42:27 > 0:42:33go with the tried and tested. He may make little adaptations, because he

0:42:33 > 0:42:38can ultimately make the decision now he's in charge. I cannot see too

0:42:38 > 0:42:42much changing now. He will try and cheer them up, try to get a result,

0:42:42 > 0:42:49which is vitally important. I do not think much will change. There was a

0:42:49 > 0:42:55real makes yesterday of criticism for the Stoke hierarchy, for getting

0:42:55 > 0:42:58themselves in this situation, wanting Quique Sanchez Flores, he

0:42:58 > 0:43:02turned them down, and sympathy going, what more could they have

0:43:02 > 0:43:07done? They made him the Frankie turned them down. That is how it

0:43:07 > 0:43:10works. I tend to agree with the latter. They wanted him and they did

0:43:10 > 0:43:17not get him, so they move on. I do not see any problem in that. They

0:43:17 > 0:43:22seem like a pretty well-run club to me. They gave Mark Hughes time. I

0:43:22 > 0:43:30think they wanted that to work. As happens, momentum was against him,

0:43:30 > 0:43:34and he was not looking like he was going to turn it around, so the

0:43:34 > 0:43:41acted. I have sympathy for them.OK, thank you very much. The live
