:08:29. > :08:32.ready, prepared to take part in these Games, to everyone in every

:08:32. > :08:42.city and village in the world, watching as we begin, welcome to

:08:42. > :08:52.

:08:52. > :08:57.London! Welcome to the 2012 Olympic Games, welcome from every one of us.

:08:57. > :09:07.I have never been so proud to be British, and to be a part of the

:09:07. > :09:09.

:09:09. > :09:14.Olympic movement. Azam on this day, at this moment. The Olympics brings

:09:14. > :09:20.together the people of the world, in harmony and friendship, and in

:09:20. > :09:26.peace, to celebrate what is best about mankind. All my life, I have

:09:26. > :09:31.loved sport. You have to love sport to compete at it. There is a truth

:09:31. > :09:37.to sport, a purity, drama, intensity, a spirit which makes it

:09:37. > :09:45.irresistible to take part in, and irresistible to watch. London 2012

:09:45. > :09:51.seeks to capture all of this. London 2012 will inspire a

:09:51. > :09:55.generation. In every Olympic sport, there is all that matters in life -

:09:55. > :09:58.humans stretched to the limit of their abilities, inspired by what

:09:58. > :10:04.they can achieve, driven by the talent to work harder than they

:10:04. > :10:08.could have believed possible. Living for the moment, but making

:10:08. > :10:13.an indelible mark upon history. For the athletes gathered here on the

:10:13. > :10:19.eve of this great endeavour, I say that to you is given something

:10:19. > :10:24.precious and irreplaceable - to run faster, to jump higher, to be

:10:24. > :10:30.stronger, and to my fellow countrymen, I say thank you - thank

:10:30. > :10:40.you for making all of this possible...

:10:40. > :10:43.

:10:43. > :10:53.In the next two weeks, we will show all that has made London one of the

:10:53. > :10:54.

:10:54. > :11:03.greatest cities in the world. APPLAUSE AND CHEERING the only city

:11:03. > :11:06.to have welcomed the Games three times.

:11:06. > :11:12.Each time we have done it, the world faced turbulence and trouble.

:11:12. > :11:16.And each time, the Games have been a triumph. Our history as a

:11:16. > :11:21.thriving commercial centre, as a place where people of all nations

:11:21. > :11:28.have for centuries come to meet, as a city which never stands still,

:11:28. > :11:37.this history has prepared us for today. For us, for every Briton,

:11:37. > :11:46.just as for the competitors, this is our time.

:11:46. > :11:56.APPLAUSE And one day, we will tell our children and grandchildren that

:11:56. > :12:01.

:12:01. > :12:05.when our time came, we did it right. APPLAUSE AND CHEERING let us

:12:05. > :12:15.determine, all of us, all over the world, that London 2012 will see

:12:15. > :12:17.the very best of us. It now gives me great pleasure to

:12:17. > :12:27.introduce the President of the International Olympic Committee,

:12:27. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:44.Jacques Rogge. Your Majesty, Your Majesty's, your

:12:44. > :12:49.Royal Highnesses, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen - in

:12:49. > :12:54.just a few moments, the Olympic Games will officially returned to

:12:54. > :12:58.London for the third time, setting an are unmatched record for hosting

:13:46. > :13:47.

:13:47. > :13:52.APPLAUSE I also want to thank all the public authorities who have

:14:04. > :14:07.And of course, we are all grateful to the thousands of dedicated

:14:38. > :14:46.Who have been so generous with their time, their energy and their

:14:51. > :15:01.participating teams will have had female athletes, and this is a

:15:01. > :15:15.

:15:15. > :15:25.major boost to gender equality. In a sense, the Olympic Games are

:15:25. > :15:29.

:15:29. > :15:38.coming home tonight. This great, sports-loving country is widely

:15:38. > :15:43.recognised as the birthplace of modern sport.

:15:43. > :15:50.It was here that the concepts of sportsmanship and fair play were

:15:50. > :15:59.first codified into clear rules and regulations. It was here that sport

:15:59. > :16:05.was included as an educational tool in the school curriculum. The

:16:05. > :16:10.British approach to sport had a profound influence on our founder,

:16:10. > :16:14.Pierre de Coubertin, as he developed the framework for the

:16:14. > :16:18.modern Olympic movement at the close of the 19th century. The

:16:18. > :16:23.values that inspired Pierre de Coubertin will come to life over

:16:23. > :16:33.the next 17 days, as the world's best athletes compete in a spirit

:16:58. > :17:08.thought: Your talent, your dedication and commitment brought

:17:08. > :17:14.you here. Now you have a chance to become true Olympians. That honour

:17:14. > :17:24.is determined not by whether you win but by how you compete.

:17:24. > :17:32.

:17:32. > :17:38.APPLAUSE Reject doping, respect your

:17:48. > :18:25.

:18:25. > :18:31.will inspire a generation. These athletes make us dream. I now

:48:15. > :48:20.really does. These athletes waited a long time to walk into the

:48:20. > :48:24.stadium and lighting the cauldron, and the dramatic way it was lit,

:48:25. > :48:27.that was amazing. Gary Lineker: Did you understand what was going on

:48:27. > :48:33.half the time in the Opening Ceremony, it was very British?

:48:33. > :48:39.because I spend a lot of time in Britain. I was wondering whether

:48:39. > :48:43.some of the people back at home really got all of it, but I thought

:48:43. > :48:49.the segment with the Queen and James Bond and the helicopter was

:48:49. > :48:53.brilliant. Genius. What a moment that was. And Mr Bean was another.

:48:53. > :48:57.He's world renowned. So too is James Bond. Those moments I'm sure

:48:57. > :49:02.they'll be grasped everywhere. Music in this country was

:49:02. > :49:05.celebrated. Film was celebrated. The NHS, Great Ormond Street,

:49:05. > :49:08.modern technology. It was a celebration of all the good things

:49:08. > :49:12.about Britain. We wondered after Beijing, it was so dramatic, could

:49:12. > :49:16.they achieve that again, the first hour-and-a-half of changing the

:49:16. > :49:21.scene out there was just magical. It really was. I think London needs

:49:21. > :49:25.to make this Games their own. It started at the very beginning with

:49:25. > :49:28.the legacy and sustainability already setting a mark with this

:49:28. > :49:33.Games. I think that theme carried through with this Opening Ceremony

:49:33. > :49:37.and so, I think that it didn't make sense to try to follow Beijing.

:49:37. > :49:42.This is not Beijing. This is London's Olympics. I think London

:49:42. > :49:45.did a fabulous job with the Opening Ceremony. The track and field team

:49:45. > :49:49.are watching, the cauldron will move from there and they can be so

:49:49. > :49:56.warmed by the welcome the British team had here. It's going to be

:49:56. > :50:00.immense when the athletics gets minister under way. I'm sure --

:50:00. > :50:03.gets under way in eight days. I wish they could be here. This was

:50:03. > :50:08.fantastic. I think they'll be proud and inspired when they get here and

:50:08. > :50:13.take part in this Games in this stadium. Michael, thanks very much

:50:14. > :50:18.for spending the evening, we very much enjoyed your company. The

:50:18. > :50:23.Olympics start shortly. Olympic breakfast on BBC One begins at 6am.

:50:23. > :50:28.Yes, it's an early start for them on breakfast. Then, of course, the

:50:28. > :50:34.live sport gets under way at 9am and so much to look forward to. The

:50:34. > :50:38.swimming heats get under way. Hannah Miley, Michael Phelps and

:50:38. > :50:43.Ryan Lochte in the pool. The men's eights are in action and so much to

:50:43. > :50:50.look forward to from 9am through the day. I'm back at 4pm. Gary's on

:50:50. > :50:53.at 7pm on BBC One and BBC One HD. These are the scenes still outside.

:50:53. > :50:58.The volunteers are enjoying the evening. The athletes are sliding

:50:58. > :51:02.their way back to the village. purposely didn't mention one

:51:02. > :51:06.because tomorrow we're hoping that Mark Cavendish, on the road race,

:51:06. > :51:10.can really get Britain off to a flying start and win Team GB's

:51:10. > :51:14.first Gold Medal of these Games. I tell you, after what we've seen

:51:14. > :51:18.tonight, hopefully the success story will continue. That would be

:51:19. > :51:24.very special. It would really lift it for Team GB. Get that gold to

:51:24. > :51:27.start. It would set the tone. of pressure. I know, but he has a
