:00:20. > :00:24.Welcome, nocturnal brethren. As the fortunate few leave the park
:00:24. > :00:27.tonight, fear not if you've missed anything today. This is the show
:00:27. > :00:31.that will shine a sporting light into the darkest of Olympic corners,
:00:31. > :00:41.unearthing everything you need to know. Good people, this is Olympic
:00:41. > :00:41.
:00:41. > :00:45.Sportsday. A great night for the Americans in
:00:45. > :00:49.the athletics. And it will Adams is on the brink
:00:50. > :00:54.in boxing. Could she be the first ever female Olympic champion in the
:00:55. > :00:59.ring? Crash, bang, wallop. Proof that despite the delights, sport
:00:59. > :01:02.can be pretty painful at times. No British medals tonight but still
:01:02. > :01:05.plenty to keep you going. We'll get stuck into that in a moment, once
:01:05. > :01:09.we've reminded you that you can get involved tonight - @mrdanwalker is
:01:09. > :01:12.the place to send your tweets and comments on Twitter and the man
:01:12. > :01:15.tasked with answering them tonight is Kevin Garside of the Independent.
:01:15. > :01:25.Let's begin with the evening session in the stadium. It was
:01:25. > :01:28.
:01:28. > :01:32.another packed night in there. They say patience is a virtue. One
:01:32. > :01:36.that Alison Fergus -- Allyson Felix has nurtured. The USA 200m runner
:01:37. > :01:46.hat to make do with silver in Athens and Beijing. She was not to
:01:47. > :01:50.
:01:50. > :01:55.She has got the broadest smile in track and field athletics. That was
:01:55. > :01:59.a rare high moment for America on the track, they had struggled until
:01:59. > :02:07.then. How quickly things can change. Merritt is forging ahead and he is
:02:07. > :02:11.going away. Richardson is in second place. Gold for Merritt! 12.94 for
:02:11. > :02:15.top Merritt taking home gold and Britain's Lawrence Clarke, in his
:02:15. > :02:20.first Olympics, surpassing all expectations by finishing fourth.
:02:20. > :02:24.To win a medal at the Olympics is very, very hard. I never came here
:02:24. > :02:28.without that expectation. To come forth, the best you can come
:02:28. > :02:34.outside the medals, I've beaten the European silver medallist. I can't
:02:34. > :02:39.believe it. Britain's Shara Proctor had long departed a competition
:02:39. > :02:46.when the hat-trick of blink was a good book -- secured for America.
:02:46. > :02:50.He Brittney Reese flying through the air and landing on gold. I hope
:02:50. > :02:54.the star-spangled Banner CD isn't scratched. It was near the a clean
:02:55. > :02:59.sweep for the States if it wasn't for those pesky Russians. Natalya
:02:59. > :03:04.Antyukh just about halting the USA's golden charge in the 400m
:03:04. > :03:08.hurdles. The American might have the momentum. Antyukh wins the
:03:08. > :03:16.gold! She was big and strong and she hung on and that is what it
:03:16. > :03:21.means to her. Now to the shyest person at these Olympic Games. But
:03:21. > :03:28.when doing this comes so easy, you kind of let him get away with it.
:03:28. > :03:36.Usain Bolt has a little look inside him, a glance outside. Usain Bolt
:03:36. > :03:40.wins it. I was trying to go as easy as possible. I'm ready, this is my
:03:40. > :03:44.favourite event. If he was on cruise control to reach the 200m
:03:44. > :03:51.final, his friend and biggest threat Yohan Blake slipped into
:03:51. > :03:55.neutral at the end of his race. almost stops! He does stop. That
:03:55. > :04:01.was risky. It was always going to be difficult for Christian Malcolm
:04:01. > :04:05.to make a third Olympic final and so it proved. I'm disappointed.
:04:05. > :04:10.Last Olympics, it would have been nice to make the final but it
:04:10. > :04:14.wasn't to be. Much better news for GB in the 1,500m. Lisa Dobriskey
:04:14. > :04:18.looked very good as she qualified for the final. Hannah England
:04:18. > :04:28.missed out, but Laura Weightman will join Dobriskey as a fastest
:04:28. > :04:28.
:04:28. > :04:34.loser. Much to the light of her I feel a computer game already in
:04:34. > :04:38.the pipeline for this guy. Ashton Eaton is phenomenal. The decathlete
:04:39. > :04:44.set a new record at the American trials in June and already looks
:04:44. > :04:47.uncatchable. Leading to the conclusion and the reported demise
:04:47. > :04:53.of American athletics might have been a tad premature.
:04:53. > :04:57.I wanted to mention Lawrence Clarke coming fourth in the sprint hurdles.
:04:57. > :05:02.He is Eton-educated, he is as distant relative of Theodore
:05:02. > :05:07.Roosevelt as well. A big future at only 22, but other than that it was
:05:07. > :05:13.a night for the Americans. He is American by association. A terrific
:05:14. > :05:18.story for the Brits. He has been labelled the poshest athlete in our
:05:18. > :05:25.team, which is a bit of fun. I wish we had a slump like the Americans
:05:25. > :05:29.we had had in track and field. Since the break-up of the Soviet
:05:29. > :05:36.Union, they've almost had it their own way. Terrific strength in track
:05:36. > :05:41.and field, particularly sprinting. You mentioned for sprinting. We see
:05:41. > :05:45.Usain Bolt in the 100 and for 200 and Yohan Blake does it as well,
:05:45. > :05:49.slowing down at the end of the race. It shows how good they are, but it
:05:49. > :05:56.must be frustrating for those who are blowing a gasket trying to keep
:05:56. > :06:02.up. You can forgive Usain Bolt anything. The rest are brilliant
:06:02. > :06:07.sprinters, but he is the Games. He is why we are all watching this. He
:06:08. > :06:13.is so engaging. If you have a camera up your nose all the time,
:06:14. > :06:17.you have to smile. If you can compete like that, he can do it
:06:17. > :06:21.backwards as far as I'm concerned. Do you see him strolling away with
:06:21. > :06:26.it? He says it is his favourite event and I would not back against
:06:26. > :06:30.him. In terms of a positive note for the British, Steve Cram very
:06:30. > :06:35.excitement -- excited about Laura Weightman, but Lisa Dobriskey has a
:06:35. > :06:40.genuine chance in the 1,500m. She finished well, she is training well,
:06:40. > :06:44.she feels confident. It could be another British medal. She reminded
:06:44. > :06:49.me so much of Nicole Cooke. Different disciplines, she was on a
:06:49. > :06:59.bike, but a lovely smile. So sincere and so genuine and so happy
:06:59. > :07:02.
:07:03. > :07:06.to be here. How can you not like people like that?
:07:06. > :07:08.Time we had a little look back at what happened in the morning
:07:08. > :07:12.session. Britain's 10,000m champion Mo Farah was back in action four
:07:12. > :07:15.days after that memorable Saturday night. He was in the first heat of
:07:15. > :07:18.the 5,000m and was made to work hard to make it through to the
:07:18. > :07:20.final. He eventually finished third, which was good enough, but admitted
:07:21. > :07:24.afterwards how tired he was following the 10,000. He'll spend
:07:24. > :07:27.the next few days trying to recover his strength in time for Saturday's
:07:27. > :07:29.final. After the euphoria of the other night, you had to get back to
:07:29. > :07:32.business, how difficult was it? was pretty difficult, I was quite
:07:32. > :07:36.tired. It took more out of me than I realised. But I got great support
:07:36. > :07:41.from the crowd and I'm happy. I have a couple of days to recover.
:07:41. > :07:46.It is nice to get to the file. said you kept getting caught.
:07:46. > :07:49.there was a lot of pushing and shoving, the pace was going up and
:07:50. > :07:54.down. That is what happens in the heat. Hopefully in the final it
:07:54. > :07:57.will settle down. There was a fine performance from
:07:57. > :08:00.Sophie Hitchon, who improved her own British record to reach the
:08:00. > :08:04.final of the hammer throw. She was heading out of the tournament after
:08:04. > :08:07.a below par first throw and a foul in the second, but at the third
:08:07. > :08:15.attempt she launched it 71.98 metres. It meant she finished tenth
:08:15. > :08:18.in qualifying, which put her through to Friday's final.
:08:18. > :08:21.A good run from Lyndsay Sharp put her through to the semi-finals of
:08:21. > :08:23.the 800m. She was a controversial selection for the event, having
:08:23. > :08:27.only achieved the B standard, while A standard athletes, like Jenny
:08:27. > :08:29.Meadows, missed out. But so far the gamble appears to be paying off as
:08:29. > :08:38.she finished second in her heat behind defending Olympic champion
:08:38. > :08:43.Pamela Jelimo, easily qualifying automatically for the semis. I came
:08:43. > :08:47.to watch a couple of nights ago, just to get used to it. I don't
:08:47. > :08:52.think anything can prepare you for when you on the track. When I was
:08:52. > :08:56.running, I had a ringing in my ear. The crowd was so loud. It was
:08:56. > :08:58.really good because it made me forget about everything.
:08:58. > :09:01.Caster Semenya is also through to the semi-finals. Making her Olympic
:09:01. > :09:04.debut three years after being forced to undergo gender tests, the
:09:04. > :09:08.South African finished second in her heat. Semenya won the world
:09:08. > :09:14.title when just 18 in 2009, and was sidelined for a year while the IAAF
:09:14. > :09:17.decided her fate. She was runner up in last year's World Championships.
:09:17. > :09:20.But there was heartbreak for British decathlete Daniel Awde. He
:09:20. > :09:24.made a fantastic start to his Olympics, setting a new personal
:09:24. > :09:27.best in the 100m, winning his heat in a time of 10.71 seconds. That
:09:27. > :09:32.was good enough to put him in seventh place overall, but that was
:09:32. > :09:36.as good as it got for the 24-year- old. An old knee injury flared up
:09:36. > :09:39.and after two no jumps in the long jump, and a below par third, he was
:09:39. > :09:42.forced to pull out of the competition.
:09:42. > :09:45.Steve Lewis enjoyed a comfortable qualifying session for the pole
:09:45. > :09:50.vault. He needed just one jump to make it through to the final,
:09:50. > :09:53.easily clearing the qualification target of 5.50. He's the room-mate
:09:53. > :09:59.of new Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford so is hoping a
:09:59. > :10:02.little for a little inspiration when it comes to the competition.
:10:02. > :10:05.Now, this could have been really painful, but thankfully Lazaro
:10:05. > :10:12.Borges of Cuba emerged unscathed when his pole vault snapped as he
:10:12. > :10:22.was lifting off. You'd think that might have unnerved him, but he got
:10:22. > :10:26.back on the horse, so to speak, and went on to qualify for the final.
:10:26. > :10:30.Not really getting back on the horse, but you know what I mean! It
:10:30. > :10:36.was a tired-looking performance from Mo Farah, but he has until
:10:36. > :10:43.Saturday to sort himself out. All of that energy from Saturday's
:10:44. > :10:50.incredible gold medal in the 10,000. They are notoriously brutal events
:10:50. > :10:55.to run at the Olympics. He is very brave taking it on, but he looked
:10:55. > :10:59.tired. You hope there's enough in the tank for the final. We've had a
:10:59. > :11:03.lot of questions about Caster Semenya. She's always said she just
:11:03. > :11:07.wants to be another athlete, regarded as another athlete. The
:11:07. > :11:10.way the eye double A F have dealt with her, will she ever be able to
:11:10. > :11:20.be dealt with as just another athlete? So sadly that opportunity
:11:20. > :11:21.
:11:21. > :11:27.has gone. This was a young woman given what nature gave her, the
:11:27. > :11:30.male female characteristic, and it was a very, very public scrutiny.
:11:30. > :11:34.We had to journalists travelling the world just to get a quote from
:11:34. > :11:39.her and not getting a quote half the time was good enough to get the
:11:39. > :11:43.story. You have to feel sorry for her. She is very, very brave
:11:43. > :11:49.competing and carrying on with her career. A couple of questions from
:11:49. > :11:53.Twitter. It would be great to have a medal contender in the sprint
:11:53. > :12:01.events for GB. There's something missing. Her not only that. On
:12:01. > :12:06.Sunday, when we were watching the great drama unfold, I was watching
:12:06. > :12:11.the heats for the 1,500m and thinking, this was our bread and
:12:11. > :12:16.butter. Seb Coe, Steve Cram, Steve Ovett. Britain are struggling. A
:12:16. > :12:21.lot of the track and field, we had a great Saturday night, but we have
:12:21. > :12:27.really struggled to compete for medals. It is a bit distressing.
:12:27. > :12:32.Charles van Commenee has to look at this. He was going to transform our
:12:32. > :12:36.performance on the track. It hasn't happened in areas where we've been
:12:36. > :12:40.strong traditionally. And now for the part of the show
:12:40. > :12:43.that is proving the most popular by a long way. After a few of you got
:12:43. > :12:46.a mention yesterday, Michelle claims to be the biggest fan of the
:12:46. > :12:49.global round up, saying she watches it live and then makes her kids
:12:49. > :12:52.watch it the following morning. Tonight we have emotion, plenty of
:12:52. > :13:01.golds and a fight. For Michelle, and the kids, here's Jonathan
:13:01. > :13:06.It is a tough job, but someone has to watch women's beach volleyball!
:13:06. > :13:09.Pulses were racing in this all- American affair. The final
:13:09. > :13:13.appearance together of Misty May- Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings as
:13:13. > :13:17.a pairing. They won gold in Ashton's -- Athens and Beijing.
:13:17. > :13:21.London would be their swansong. Jennifer Kessy and April Ross were
:13:21. > :13:25.hoping to have spoiled the fairy- tale ending, but they were no match
:13:25. > :13:29.for the outgoing veterans. They made it a hat-trick of gold medals
:13:29. > :13:34.to sign off in style. Horse Guards Parade will never quite be the same
:13:34. > :13:38.again. In a slightly less glamourous world of men's indoor
:13:38. > :13:43.volleyball, a quarter-final upset as the defending champions the USA
:13:43. > :13:48.were dumped out by Italy, 3-0. And there was plenty of South American
:13:48. > :13:52.passion on display as Brazil got the better of arch-rivals Argentina,
:13:52. > :13:55.although you would hardly know it from there rather angry Brazilian
:13:55. > :13:59.celebrations. There would be another ding-dong in the ping-pong
:13:59. > :14:03.with China still on song. Having already won all three gold medals
:14:03. > :14:08.on offer so far in the table tennis, China were heavy favourites to make
:14:08. > :14:14.it a clean sweep of medals for the second successive Olympics. Victory
:14:14. > :14:23.in the men's team event. And it went to form. South Korea defeated
:14:23. > :14:27.as China saluted yet another gold Germany beat Hong Kong in the play-
:14:27. > :14:32.off for bronze. In the morning heats of the women's 800 metres
:14:32. > :14:37.history was made, as Sarah Attar became the first Saudi Arabian
:14:37. > :14:41.woman to compete. She came last in her heat by over 40 second, but in
:14:41. > :14:45.the wider context, this was an Olympic first of real significance.
:14:45. > :14:49.There has been lots of talk about what a disappointing Olympics poor
:14:49. > :14:56.old Australia has been having. There was another gold today.
:14:56. > :15:01.Courtesy of the men's sailing 49er class. You don't have to be big to

:17:23. > :17:27.you didn't know where you were, the noise is so great it feels like you
:17:27. > :17:32.are in your home nation. Let us be loud and proud. Why not give a gold
:17:32. > :17:35.medal to British public. They have embraced the games. Not in a
:17:35. > :17:39.xenophobic way, I have been salt next to people who are glad to have
:17:39. > :17:42.a ticket. They are not just watching Brits. They are getting
:17:42. > :17:46.involved and caring about the outcomes and cheering on any team
:17:46. > :17:52.they are watching. I think that the whole thing, the whole, there has
:17:52. > :17:56.been a huep huge success and a large part has been the spectators.
:17:56. > :18:00.Talking about boisterous crowds. We could have boxing history, tomorrow
:18:00. > :18:04.it will crown its first female champion and it could be Nicola
:18:04. > :18:09.Adams. She will face Ren Cancan for the gold after getting the better
:18:09. > :18:13.of the five time World Champion Mary Kom today. Nicola Adams
:18:13. > :18:18.continues her history making progress this afternoon, she is
:18:18. > :18:21.guaranteed Britain's first Olympic women's boxing medal next she takes
:18:21. > :18:24.on five time World Champion Mary Kom from India, in the flying
:18:24. > :18:29.weight semi-final. When the Prime Minister is watching, you know
:18:29. > :18:32.there must be a big story developing. This one, involves a
:18:32. > :18:38.29-year-old from Leeds. Nicola Adams, a sweet smile, and an even
:18:38. > :18:41.sweeter right hand. Already guaranteed a bronze medal, she knew
:18:41. > :18:47.a win against marry -- Mary Kom would put her in the first women's
:18:47. > :18:52.boxing final in Olympic history. But these two are no first timers.
:18:52. > :18:57.Mary Kom is a five time World Champion. Their quality showed in
:18:57. > :19:02.two classy rounds. Adams didn't like like a woman to be messed with,
:19:02. > :19:06.but her coach ensureed she knows he is the boss. You are moving that
:19:06. > :19:11.out of the way. Don't do that. Close your eyes. While Adams had
:19:11. > :19:18.her eyes open in the final two rounds, her quick feet and quick
:19:18. > :19:23.hands putting her insight of victory. Nicola Adams, she is
:19:23. > :19:27.moments away from a place in the gold medal bout, Mary Kom
:19:27. > :19:31.continuing to compete until the very final bell but one suspects
:19:31. > :19:34.she hasn't done enough. A brief glimpse of the Ali shuffle from
:19:34. > :19:41.Adams and that perhaps in recognition she has done enough to

:19:44. > :19:49.am so happy to be here participating, and I am in the

:19:53. > :19:56.and family proud, and I think I have done that today by getting in
:19:56. > :20:01.the final. But it wasn't just Nicola Adams who made those closest
:20:01. > :20:05.to her proud. So did Ireland's Katie Taylor. The world number one
:20:05. > :20:10.in the 60 kilogram category who is coached by her father and cheered
:20:10. > :20:14.on bay raw cows crowd as she made her way through a gold medal bout
:20:14. > :20:22.with soch soch. And for Taylor a four time World Champion, it
:20:22. > :20:27.doesn't get any better than this. - - soch soch This is a dream come
:20:27. > :20:30.true. For so many 10,000 Irish people here. It is better than I
:20:30. > :20:35.thought it could be. I am boxing for a gold medal, file like I am in
:20:35. > :20:39.heaven right now. It is amazing. But for the home crowd, there was
:20:39. > :20:46.no doubt who the star was. In the blue corner, representing Great
:20:46. > :20:52.Britain, Nicola Adams. And if Adams can become Olympic boxing champion,
:20:52. > :20:55.then this big story will get even bigger. Been a big response to
:20:55. > :21:01.women's boxing today, with the show in mind. Some saying they are not
:21:01. > :21:05.sure about it. Others saying they love watching the boxing, it has
:21:05. > :21:08.been a great spectacle. Ian said I thought I would hate it but I have
:21:08. > :21:12.been entertained. What is your take on it and for Nicola Adams? What do
:21:12. > :21:17.you think her chances are? She is up against a serious fighter.
:21:17. > :21:22.has beaten her many times before. The Chinese girl looks the goods.
:21:23. > :21:28.The Ali shuffle, you have a chance. But Nicola, I saw her on Tuesday,
:21:28. > :21:32.and, was it mopped? Whenever that was. What day is it? I think it is
:21:32. > :21:38.Wednesday. Monday I saw her, and she was formidable on that day but
:21:38. > :21:42.she has a tough opponent. But Katie Taylor. She bobgd on Monday, and
:21:42. > :21:46.this, she is a superstar in Ireland, the four time World Champion. A
:21:46. > :21:56.guaranteed gold as much as you can get. The Irish are all over it. It
:21:56. > :21:57.
:21:57. > :22:00.is a part of Dublin down there. The British girl Jonas, it was a
:22:00. > :22:05.terrific fight. Do you think this is another step forward for women's
:22:05. > :22:11.sport, in terms of having women's boxing in the Olympics? We saw them
:22:11. > :22:17.in Tae Kwon Do, and they fight in judo, that argument is done. That
:22:17. > :22:22.they are there legitimately because they fight. There was huge
:22:22. > :22:25.disappointment for Tom Stalker. He faced Uranchimeg, in his light
:22:25. > :22:30.welterweight quarter-final. He is ranked number one in the world but
:22:30. > :22:34.the experienced Mongolian in his third Olympic Games proved a
:22:34. > :22:39.durable opponent. The Briton trailed into the last round and
:22:39. > :22:43.tried to turn the contest round. Both men went toe to toe, but
:22:43. > :22:49.despite winning the final round he lost 23-22. He was clearly
:22:49. > :22:52.distraught by the decision and headed straight for the exit after.
:22:52. > :22:57.He wanted to do well, because he is a leader of the British team, they
:22:57. > :23:02.weren't happy with the fight. There have been a few fights that have
:23:02. > :23:08.been appealed. He was, almost the talisman of that team. 28-year-old,
:23:08. > :23:12.he is a career amateur ha, is very rare. Kids like Amir Khan turned at
:23:12. > :23:16.17. So many people give up the amateur game. He has made a career
:23:16. > :23:19.out of it. I only saw the last round. I didn't see the first two
:23:19. > :23:23.rounds because I was travelling back. The last round f you are
:23:23. > :23:27.going to judge it on that he was the winner. Most people seem to
:23:27. > :23:31.think he won the fight. Greenwich Park has produced some impressive
:23:31. > :23:36.sight, crowds of 50,000 and two British gold medals so far. There
:23:36. > :23:41.was a chance to secure a trio in the individual showjumping. Regular
:23:41. > :23:47.watchers of Olympic Sportsday know when we need horse news we call on
:23:47. > :23:52.the powers of Joe Wilson, today is no different. The bell ring, he
:23:52. > :23:58.goes again. Nick Skelton in the saddle. His body a legacy. He has
:23:58. > :24:03.broken just about everything, including his neck, he doesn't stop.
:24:03. > :24:08.He was setting showjumping records in the 70s. He was always chasing
:24:08. > :24:16.the Olympics. Greenwich onboard Big Star, he has been jumping like
:24:16. > :24:19.never before. No mistakes in the first round of the final. The the
:24:19. > :24:23.Nick Skelton story has attracted a lot of interest here, but he is not
:24:23. > :24:28.the only British rider who has been in great form. Scott Brash,
:24:28. > :24:32.Scotland's finest is 26. The youngest jumper in Britain's ranks
:24:32. > :24:36.and an Olympic debutante. He started perfectly two. There were
:24:36. > :24:40.only six riders with zero points after the first round and two were
:24:40. > :24:44.British. Another one Swiss, and when Steve Guerdat went clear again
:24:44. > :24:49.in the second round, the bar was raised high. Britain's riders knew
:24:49. > :24:55.they had to be perfect to keep up, to force a jump-off for goal. Sadly
:24:55. > :24:59.for Scott Brash on Hello Sanctos his came early. I am gutted. At
:24:59. > :25:03.times like this you have to be not greedy. People are dying in the
:25:03. > :25:07.world, all sort, I am thankful to be here, my horse is jumping
:25:07. > :25:13.excellent. There is loads more competitions to come. What about
:25:13. > :25:17.Skelton? Last to ride. Big star hadn't made aner roar all week.
:25:17. > :25:22.With the tension at its height. It happened. From the bring of gold,
:25:22. > :25:30.back to the drawing board. hasn't touched a jump all week.
:25:30. > :25:35.Definitely, the worst time to make one. Like I say, been there before,
:25:35. > :25:38.same thing again. Got keep going. Remember Skelton did win the team
:25:38. > :25:42.vent with Great Britain here and there is always Rio, once he has
:25:42. > :25:47.found time for a back operation. There has been a huge amount of
:25:47. > :25:50.interest in sports we wouldn't normally televise on the BBC. Lots
:25:50. > :25:55.of people have been sending in messages saying BBC, you make sure
:25:55. > :26:00.you keep this on the television you keep this in the high profile. Do
:26:00. > :26:06.you think we have asked this before, do you think that will happen, lor
:26:07. > :26:12.it be forgotten, sportliest like judo and others. Inevitably, we are
:26:12. > :26:16.back into the beast of fall in a weeks time. That is the laelty.
:26:16. > :26:19.Sports like handball, water poe toe, who is, there is no great demand,
:26:20. > :26:23.except in this format and this arena, I know these sports have
:26:23. > :26:27.used the games to get the profile. Now they will be banging on the
:26:27. > :26:34.door of UK Sport to get funding and go to Rio. That is what it is about
:26:34. > :26:37.for them. That depends on how well they do in the games. We have some
:26:38. > :26:41.sports competing who didn't even have a federation when we were
:26:41. > :26:49.awarded the games. That would be volleyball. Then they got one, they
:26:49. > :26:57.got 4 million of funding, that only amounts to 6 leet athletes.
:26:57. > :27:02.Compare to some, boxing for example. Over 40k for them. You can maybe
:27:02. > :27:08.see why Thomas Stalker made a career out of it. Well Great
:27:08. > :27:13.Britain's men and women's hockey teams have made the last four, the

:28:06. > :28:10.through the smallest gap between is what she is capable of doing and
:28:10. > :28:20.that is why she is a marked lady as far as Argentina are concerned.
:28:20. > :28:52.
:28:52. > :28:56.Look at this, no room. Being pushed for an incident inside 23 metres.
:28:56. > :29:02.They feel the ball went out of play on the far side for top for
:29:02. > :29:07.referral is much further back. For me, this is great skill. As she is
:29:07. > :29:17.falling to the ground, she manages to play it on the forehand. I think
:29:17. > :29:25.
:29:25. > :29:35.Great Britain are guilty of not one person the Great Britain people
:29:35. > :29:43.
:29:43. > :29:49.What a fantastic ball by Helen Richardson. Alex Danson on her

:30:07. > :30:15.2-1 with five minutes to go. gone. Argentina are through to the
:30:15. > :30:17.final. Once again, Great Britain off-fore lawn. You look around the
:30:17. > :30:23.off-fore lawn. You look around the pitch and the players are showing
:30:23. > :30:28.utter dejection. I'm so proud of every one of them. We are a squad
:30:28. > :30:32.of 28 and I'm proud of all the girls. We came in with a squad
:30:32. > :30:34.mentality to go into the last game with every fight.
:30:34. > :30:36.with every fight. The other semi was a thriller as
:30:36. > :30:40.the Netherlands edged through against New Zealand. The Black
:30:40. > :30:43.Sticks went 1-0 and 2-1 up. There was a horrible looking head whack
:30:43. > :30:48.for New Zealand's Katie Glynn, who got the full force of a Dutch stick
:30:48. > :30:50.straight to the back of her cranium. In true Terry Butcher style, she
:30:50. > :30:54.went for the wrap-it-and-carry-on option The Netherlands struck in
:30:54. > :30:57.the second half from a short corner to make it 2-2 at full time Extra
:30:57. > :31:06.time couldn't separate them and it went to a shoot-out, which the

:31:10. > :31:16.decisive goal. Argentina against the Netherlands in the final. Sad
:31:16. > :31:20.news for Team GB, who were very heavily fancied. Hard to watch the
:31:20. > :31:25.GB players crying at the end. They never looked like favourites
:31:25. > :31:30.tonight. It is not the first time we have suffered at the hands of
:31:30. > :31:35.Argentina in international competition. This looks like a goal
:31:35. > :31:39.to me. Talking about sport in the limelight, hockey was one of those
:31:39. > :31:43.hoping for a medal. Still a chance for a gold medal and still a chance
:31:43. > :31:50.for gold or silver for the men. is at home so the spotlight is on
:31:50. > :31:54.them. It is a great achievement to get into the last four. Co have
:31:54. > :31:58.still had a great Olympics and they have captured the Olympics. Barry
:31:58. > :32:02.Davies was in our studio earlier. He says he watches this programme
:32:02. > :32:07.every night and his favourite part of the show is guess what. The
:32:07. > :32:10.global round-up! Even Barry likes Cast your mind back to Beijing four
:32:10. > :32:13.years ago. BMX was in the Olympics for the first ever time and Shanaze
:32:13. > :32:18.Reade was Great Britian's outstanding medal chance - in fact,
:32:18. > :32:28.favourite for the gold. When this happened. Shanaze Reade being
:32:28. > :32:30.
:32:30. > :32:37.announced to the crowd. She has got This is the start, Reade on the
:32:37. > :32:41.right. She gets a terrific start. Can she get back level? Reade
:32:41. > :32:50.looking for the inside line. She is in the silver medal position. She
:32:50. > :32:55.has crashed! She has gone down. Reade looked to get down the inside
:32:55. > :33:01.and clipped the back wheel. That put her completely out of the
:33:01. > :33:05.medals. I'm afraid that the hopes of a podium position for Shanaze
:33:05. > :33:08.Reade from Great Britain have gone. She started her campaign for
:33:08. > :33:12.Olympic redemption this afternoon on the track which is right next to
:33:12. > :33:14.the Velodrome here in the Olympic Park. It was only the initial round
:33:14. > :33:24.to determine the seedings for Friday's semi-finals. Let's see how
:33:24. > :33:26.
:33:26. > :33:34.Cometh the hour, cometh the woman. Shanaze Reade. You've seen her
:33:34. > :33:44.career up close. How much has she got riding on this? Hopefully not
:33:44. > :33:48.too much pressure. She has come out with absolute confidence. Into the
:33:49. > :33:54.first turn. Just letting the back wheel drop nicely. Floating across
:33:54. > :34:02.the step up and for a double. doubt she will do the time in this
:34:02. > :34:07.run. She is at the top of the chart so far. Definitely nice and smooth.
:34:07. > :34:15.Keeping it relatively safe. used that cascade really well to
:34:15. > :34:20.create a lot of speed. Nice and smooth. Good last. First rider to
:34:20. > :34:23.go under 40. Very nice work. Liam Phillips was also in action in
:34:23. > :34:26.the men's competition. He managed to set the 12th fastest time. He
:34:26. > :34:30.didn't expect to be competing after fracturing a collarbone, describing
:34:30. > :34:33.it as "a miraculous recovery". Now, watch this for a perfect
:34:33. > :34:36.illustration of what can happen when things go wrong in BMX.
:34:36. > :34:41.American Brooke Crain got into difficulties and finished with a
:34:41. > :34:49.face full of tarmac. It looks really nasty, but I'm glad to say
:34:50. > :34:54.she's OK and will be able to continue. Solid concrete and that
:34:54. > :34:59.hurt. A lot of people sedate -- hurt. A lot of people sedate --
:34:59. > :35:07.today saying that BMX is a brutal sport. It looks fun, but it is
:35:07. > :35:12.brutal. It reminds me of coming off the ski-lift. Not pretty. Going
:35:12. > :35:17.back to Shanaze Reade, in Beijing, none of us knew that much about her.
:35:18. > :35:23.It was making its debut as a sport. We knew she would win gold at and
:35:23. > :35:29.we didn't have to worry. Until the day of the event. We saw what
:35:29. > :35:33.happened. She has had four years. If you listen to an interview with
:35:33. > :35:38.her, she is absolutely desperate. Of all of the athletes that want to
:35:38. > :35:42.achieve, she is desperate to make amends for what went wrong.
:35:42. > :35:50.defines your life. This is her shop window. This will mean everything
:35:50. > :35:54.to her. God forbid if she clips the wheel again and goes down. My word.
:35:54. > :36:01.Melissa SEN to tweets saying, last week the kids want to track bike
:36:01. > :36:05.and now they want to be a makes. Do they even make for many more? I
:36:05. > :36:08.suppose this is what it is all about, it is about the children
:36:08. > :36:14.watching and saying to their parents, I want to do that. They
:36:14. > :36:19.get involved. Sir Chris Hoy said today 10 or 15 years down the line
:36:19. > :36:23.they could be competing for medals. That is how it works. I remember
:36:23. > :36:33.watching the Olympics and wanting to be... It never quite worked
:36:33. > :36:36.
:36:37. > :36:40.fear! -- for you. BMX, get in touch. She can have my old BMX. Nigel also
:36:40. > :36:46.says if there's room for BMX at the Olympics, it can't be long before
:36:46. > :36:50.we have chopper races. Slightly tongue-in-cheek. The gear might be
:36:50. > :36:53.an issue on the or chopper. You wouldn't want to fall off with that.
:36:53. > :36:56.A I'm not sure Jack Tripp -- Jacques Rogge will allow that to
:36:56. > :36:58.happen. Time to run you through some of the
:36:58. > :37:02.other British athletes on show today. We're gradually whittling
:37:02. > :37:05.them down as the Games draw to a close. Let's start at Eton Dorney,
:37:05. > :37:07.where Tim Brabants failed to retain his Olympic title in the single
:37:07. > :37:12.kayak. He always said he might struggle after scraping into the
:37:12. > :37:14.final, and so it proved as he came last. The kayak four of Rachel
:37:14. > :37:24.Cawthorn, Jessica Walker, Louisa Sawers and Angela Hannah also
:37:24. > :37:26.
:37:26. > :37:29.failed to get on the podium. They came fifth in their final. Money

:37:39. > :37:40.
:37:40. > :37:45.the women's diving. Cladding did better, but she finished 19th. Only
:37:45. > :37:48.the top 18 made the final. There was also disappointment for
:37:48. > :37:51.Steve Morrison and Ben Rhodes in the medal race for the men's 49er.
:37:51. > :37:54.With gold and silver already secured by Australia and New

:37:57. > :38:03.they could only finish fifth on the day, which also meant a fifth place
:38:03. > :38:06.finish overall. But Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark are on course for
:38:06. > :38:09.a medal in the 470 class. All they need to do is avoid
:38:09. > :38:13.disqualification or being black flagged in Friday's medal race and
:38:13. > :38:23.they'll pick up at least silver. They need to get the better of the

:39:48. > :39:54.interesting to see what they've interesting to see what they've
:39:54. > :40:00.gone. A bit of agenda-setting. The newspapers have had a lavish 12
:40:00. > :40:03.days. They've enjoyed themselves. They have. In this kind of event,
:40:04. > :40:07.all of them have attacked it brilliantly. A couple of quick
:40:07. > :40:11.questions. What has been your highlight so far and you are not
:40:11. > :40:20.allowed to pick Saturday night. Bradley Wiggins sitting in the
:40:20. > :40:25.chair after his time trial. Loved it. Excellent pose as well. You
:40:25. > :40:30.haven't really mentioned the game's makers much. Can you give them some
:40:30. > :40:37.love? To those people who shout at you through a megaphone and tell
:40:37. > :40:41.you to smile. They have been absolutely brilliant. Everybody who
:40:41. > :40:47.has been involved in keeping this thing going, there's been a smile
:40:47. > :40:51.on everybody's face. Even when you leave, they are still smiling.
:40:51. > :40:58.Somebody has mentioned a guy in the underground car-park who has worked

:41:10. > :41:16.What else are you looking forward to in the last few days? I'm back

:41:24. > :41:29.seeing the boxing come to a conclusion. I think we can wrap up
:41:29. > :41:34.some silverware, possibly a gold medal or two. Looking forward to
:41:34. > :41:38.seeing Anthony Joshua. Patrick Collins was here yesterday. One of
:41:38. > :41:48.the questions to him was his iconic image of the Games. What would be
:41:48. > :41:49.
:41:49. > :41:55.yours? One picture you will take away with you. I enjoyed... Phelps
:41:55. > :42:02.in the pool. He lost with grace. When he got the record number of
