:00:00. > :00:00.near the river in Totnes. Turkey have staged their prey test about an

:00:00. > :00:19.attempted coup by parts of the military. -- staged a protest.

:00:20. > :00:41.Hello and welcome to Olympic Sportsday.

:00:42. > :00:58.On the day at Russian Paralympian 's discovered there Paralympic fate.

:00:59. > :01:05.With the event just a month away, 267 athletes across 18 sports will

:01:06. > :01:08.miss the Paralympic Games. A bad week for Lizzie Armitstead get

:01:09. > :01:15.slightly worse. She had ground to make up in the Olympic road race

:01:16. > :01:20.after a puncture. And the rowing is cancelled after a second day of high

:01:21. > :01:27.winds and rough water. Also coming up in a programme, England had that

:01:28. > :01:28.-- perfect day at Edgbaston to take a 2-1 lead against Pakistan in their

:01:29. > :01:33.Test series. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic scores

:01:34. > :01:35.the winner at Wembley as Manchester United beat

:01:36. > :01:37.Leicester City to take Hello and welcome

:01:38. > :01:49.to Olympic Sportsday. Cycling and Swimming on the way

:01:50. > :01:52.plus news of a dramatic day But we'll start with the news

:01:53. > :01:56.that the International Paralympic Committee have suspended Russa

:01:57. > :01:58.from all Paralympic activity. That means they will not be able

:01:59. > :02:00.to send athletes to Rio Our reporter Chris McLaughlin

:02:01. > :02:16.was at the press conference today What exactly was said? Well, it's a

:02:17. > :02:21.decision we were expecting, but when the confirmation came with guilt

:02:22. > :02:30.felt like it was pretty huge. Russia will take no part in the Paralympic

:02:31. > :02:35.Games here in Rio. It is strongly that you that the Russian Paralympic

:02:36. > :02:43.committee is currently unable to ensure compliance with and

:02:44. > :02:51.enforcement of the IPC's anti-doping code within its own national

:02:52. > :02:57.jurisdiction. Therefore, it cannot fulfil its fundamental obligations

:02:58. > :03:00.as an IPC member, and as a result, we have resolved to suspend the

:03:01. > :03:10.Russian Paralympic committee with immediate effect. Sir Philip Craven

:03:11. > :03:14.went on to describe how he has had sleepless nights thinking about this

:03:15. > :03:23.decision, but the decision is fact -based. They were 45 sample

:03:24. > :03:29.tampering examples uncovered, and after the McLaren report, he says

:03:30. > :03:34.it's a decision placing a huge burden on the IPC. He says the

:03:35. > :03:41.Russian anti-doping system is corrupt. He said, it disgusts me,

:03:42. > :03:46.and he says if we start slacking on this great threat in the future of

:03:47. > :03:52.the sport is in jeopardy. This is without anyone athlete, this is

:03:53. > :04:03.about a sport. Now Todd Nicholson has set that Russia has used its

:04:04. > :04:07.athletes like pawns. What's it like the Paralympic community regarding

:04:08. > :04:14.the news? It's probably worth pointing out that Russia have a root

:04:15. > :04:17.of appeal. 21 days to lodge and have an appeal heard by the Court of

:04:18. > :04:22.Arbitration for Sport. The indication is that they will indeed

:04:23. > :04:27.appeal is expected. The world anti-doping agency has released a

:04:28. > :04:32.statement supporting this decision, but of course, this is in stark

:04:33. > :04:37.contrast to the international Olympic Committee, who resisted the

:04:38. > :04:42.temptation to implement a blanket and on its athletes that the Olympic

:04:43. > :04:51.games, though some are seeing this as a strong move by the IPC. An

:04:52. > :04:57.indication of the differences between the IOC and the IPC.

:04:58. > :05:00.To Rio now and earlier this week Lizzie Armistead told the BBC

:05:01. > :05:02.she felt people would "forever" doubt if she's a clean athlete

:05:03. > :05:07.She is hoping though to put the week behind her as she goes for gold

:05:08. > :05:15.Our Correspondent, Natalie Pirks, is near the finish line...

:05:16. > :05:23.Natalie, has Armistead shown any ill-effects from her difficult week?

:05:24. > :05:31.There is around one hour to go, and I have to say, watching her this

:05:32. > :05:36.morning, she looked very focused, very assertive, definitely no

:05:37. > :05:41.smiles. Yesterday, with the British team, we saw them joking and having

:05:42. > :05:46.a laugh and looking quite relaxed. Obviously, it didn't work for them

:05:47. > :05:52.in the end, but very different for her today. The build-up for her has

:05:53. > :05:55.been horrendous. Initially, she was having a fantastic season, she is

:05:56. > :06:01.the initial world champion in the road rage and she has been giving

:06:02. > :06:06.It is mountainous, not suited It is mountainous, not suited

:06:07. > :06:15.necessarily to her talents. She won in London, and then came the drama

:06:16. > :06:18.over those three missed tests. The first should have been struck from

:06:19. > :06:23.the record because the doping officer hadn't followed procedure.

:06:24. > :06:30.She was free to come here and compete but at what cost to hire

:06:31. > :06:34.reputation? And some fellow Olympians have waded in saying, if

:06:35. > :06:39.she was Russian, what would we think? She then gave that very

:06:40. > :06:43.emotional interview, she says she knows now she will be forever

:06:44. > :06:47.tainted with this. That they are showing the race on the big screen

:06:48. > :06:55.and they are about to climb the hardest part of the course. That's

:06:56. > :06:58.where that dissent did that for so many of the riders, including Geron

:06:59. > :07:10.Thomas who had looked fantastic prize for that. -- prior to that.

:07:11. > :07:18.Pooley came out of retirement to this, she made a break for it, she

:07:19. > :07:25.is now back. Someone very soon will make a break and we will see what

:07:26. > :07:31.happens. Coverage of that on BBC run. -- one.

:07:32. > :07:34.High winds meant that today's rowing events were postponed.

:07:35. > :07:36.Team GB's Heather Stanning and Helen Glover were due to compete

:07:37. > :07:39.The weather initially caused a two-hour delay before

:07:40. > :07:42.the decision was made to call everything off today.

:07:43. > :07:44.Five time Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave told

:07:45. > :07:48.John Inverdale that the venue is far from ideal.

:07:49. > :08:01.The Olympic Games isn't chosen on its course of prowess. It would be

:08:02. > :08:02.very unlikely that the rowing body would be cheating this venue to

:08:03. > :08:04.stage the World Championships. Our showpiece of four years

:08:05. > :08:09.is that we are in that situation where we got to deal

:08:10. > :08:11.with whatever we've got. We are an outdoor sport

:08:12. > :08:14.and that is affected by the weather. We have to deal with

:08:15. > :08:17.what we have to deal with. If you think these people

:08:18. > :08:20.are pampered rowers, then look at what the wind is doing

:08:21. > :08:34.to the markers. That's substantial, isn't it? When

:08:35. > :08:49.you are in a coxless boat you've got to try and steer round bends.

:08:50. > :09:02.We saw the Serbians go into the water and one

:09:03. > :09:10.Do organisers have a duty of care and responsibility?

:09:11. > :09:14.It's unlikely anyone is going to have a serious problem out there,

:09:15. > :09:23.but it's just unreliable and if its unrivalled ball

:09:24. > :09:25.then what is the point of having the race.

:09:26. > :09:33.First ever Olympic that rowing was included in,

:09:34. > :09:34.and it was cancelled because the whole

:09:35. > :09:39.As things are standing, they are putting a lot of faith

:09:40. > :09:49.10.39am in the morning our time, so they must have very

:09:50. > :09:53.Going forward, if we lost a second day, how does this

:09:54. > :09:58.They would deal with the situation in hand.

:09:59. > :10:01.There are processes, but if you get to eight days in a row,

:10:02. > :10:03.you've only completed one day, the likelihood is that the whole

:10:04. > :10:14.William Fox-Pitt is the man leading Great Britian's charge for medals

:10:15. > :10:19.His is just one of several good performances so far at Rio from Team

:10:20. > :10:21.GB, including Pippa Funnell who was in action today.

:10:22. > :10:23.Lee McKenzie is at the Deodoro Equestrian venue...

:10:24. > :10:26.Lee, Funnell hasn't been at the Olympics for a long long

:10:27. > :10:28.time, but what a return to form for her...?

:10:29. > :10:35.It was fantastic to see her back. She was commentating for the BBC at

:10:36. > :10:39.London 2012 and she had considered whether she should keep going or

:10:40. > :10:44.not, but she was so inspired watching the athletes that she

:10:45. > :10:50.decided to keep going. The horse she is riding hit, well, he's a bit of a

:10:51. > :10:55.tricky one. She called him the village idiot which is a bit harsh.

:10:56. > :11:01.Her husband is a very successful show-jumper and she didn't think the

:11:02. > :11:09.horse had the paces, because an eventing horse really is a

:11:10. > :11:21.triathlete, cross-country, dressage and jumping. His owner, Carol, told

:11:22. > :11:25.papers you should try inventing, and sadly Carol passed away recently so

:11:26. > :11:47.she can't see how horse competing here. Like William, paper is a three

:11:48. > :11:51.times Olympic medallist. -- Pippa. We can expect Kitty in an she is the

:11:52. > :12:00.final rider to go. The cross-country starts tomorrow.

:12:01. > :12:03.In the pool, James Guy is safely through to tonight's semi-finals

:12:04. > :12:07.He missed out on a medal in last night's 400 metre final,

:12:08. > :12:10.despite leading after the first four lengths, but he got over that

:12:11. > :12:12.disappointment today in what's his favoured event.

:12:13. > :12:23.Guy is the reigning world champion over the 200 metre distance

:12:24. > :12:24.and he qualified for tonight's semi-final second

:12:25. > :12:55.From the pool to the boxing arena at Rio, where British heavyweight

:12:56. > :12:58.Lawrence Okolie is one of those who has been in action.

:12:59. > :13:00.Our very own Jessica Creighton has been keeping a very

:13:01. > :13:09.He meant business today. He began to exert his dominance in the third

:13:10. > :13:13.round. He knocked his opponent to wrap up. It's been a good year for

:13:14. > :13:19.him. He won the bronze medal in the European Championships last year and

:13:20. > :13:26.then followed that up by winning in this arena. After the match, he told

:13:27. > :13:31.me he still wants more. I'm grateful for the win and glad my opponent is

:13:32. > :13:38.OK, but like I said, the aim is to get anyone out in front of me, to

:13:39. > :13:43.eliminate them by the knocking them out or getting the points off them.

:13:44. > :13:47.Talk me through it because you looked so determined when he walked

:13:48. > :13:52.into that arena. You meant business today. This is the biggest stage in

:13:53. > :13:56.the world and you got to impress people, look good, and I'm glad I

:13:57. > :14:05.came across that way. So, another good day for Great Britain. Three

:14:06. > :14:11.out of three of their boxers through, they can now add Joshua to

:14:12. > :14:16.this list. This is the biggest contingent they've had in the

:14:17. > :14:24.Olympics but three decades and they are on course for some medals. We

:14:25. > :14:26.will go to Rio later wrong, but now let's turn our attention is to some

:14:27. > :14:32.support -- sport close to home. AND England's cricketers now can't

:14:33. > :14:35.lose their series with Pakistan after going 2-1 up

:14:36. > :14:38.in their best of 4 series. It was a convincing victory,

:14:39. > :14:39.in the end with a Pakistan batting collapsed aiding

:14:40. > :14:50.England's 141-run win. Being England captain is about

:14:51. > :14:57.making tough decisions to Alistair Cooke decided to wait till 1130 this

:14:58. > :15:06.morning to try to bowl Pakistan alt. A gift to Stuart Broad and England.

:15:07. > :15:15.To most eyes, this was a draw. Then Ali produced this sudden spin and

:15:16. > :15:27.capture from Cook. Everything now had to happen at a hurry and that's

:15:28. > :15:32.where Anderson is useful. This was fin's first in more than ten test

:15:33. > :15:41.deliveries. Pakistan in retreat. Where had this come from? The end

:15:42. > :15:44.came before half five. Match England could have lost and probably should

:15:45. > :15:49.have drawn that they have somehow managed to win. -- a match.

:15:50. > :15:51.It was smiles all around for Manchester United today

:15:52. > :15:54.as they won the Community Shield at Wembley with a 2-1 win over

:15:55. > :16:11.Let's peter Joe Wilson. -- speak to Joe Wilson.

:16:12. > :16:13.it leaves a real air of confidence ahead

:16:14. > :16:17.of Jose Mourinho's first campaign as manager?

:16:18. > :16:25.Football, like politics is the art of the possible, Jose Mourinho

:16:26. > :16:33.referring to the messy season which was abandoned. There was an air

:16:34. > :16:39.about some of the football today of preseason, Lingard likes to score at

:16:40. > :16:46.Wembley. He strode through the Leicester defence. Hats he played

:16:47. > :16:52.himself into Jose Mourinho's thoughts in the first half. 1-0 at

:16:53. > :16:59.half-time. Lester's equalising goal was a gift. Jamie Abadi far too

:17:00. > :17:09.sharp to miss out on those types of chances. We thought it may be

:17:10. > :17:16.penalties because Ibrahimovic hadn't done a lot but in the right time at

:17:17. > :17:23.-- in the right place at the right time. Morgan might be a bit this

:17:24. > :17:25.pointed with that. That second goal, Jose Mourinho said that was an

:17:26. > :17:31.example of the kind that what he wants to play. Gray was also

:17:32. > :17:39.playing, they were all lightning quick when you bring Vardy into it

:17:40. > :17:43.as well. And the saga to end all sagas seems

:17:44. > :17:46.to be close to a conclusion - there is news today regarding Paul

:17:47. > :17:53.Pogba... Well, it was confirmed before

:17:54. > :17:56.the game that Juventus have given Paul Pogba permission

:17:57. > :18:10.to have a medical United are prepared to pay 100

:18:11. > :18:13.million. Will it be worth it? I suppose, if they win the league and

:18:14. > :18:19.qualify for the Champions League, it will be worth it. Jose Mourinho said

:18:20. > :18:30.with a smile that after today's performance, that's Pogba will have

:18:31. > :18:39.to work to get into the team. But if you look at today's game, Pogba's

:18:40. > :18:46.energy and pace will be required. Jose Mourinho insisted anything was

:18:47. > :18:47.possible, and with all those long balls from Leicester being a bit too

:18:48. > :18:51.small. In the Scottish Premiership

:18:52. > :18:53.it was goalless between St Johnstone and Aberdeen while reigning

:18:54. > :18:56.champions Celtic began their defence New signing Scott Sinclair came off

:18:57. > :19:13.the bench to score a late A new Scottish premiership season

:19:14. > :19:21.for Celtic, so what better way for Brendan Rodgers to make a mark with

:19:22. > :19:28.a goal. Jamie Forrest's first of the season. But that was just the first

:19:29. > :19:34.of had it all. A former Celtic player with a miss as bad as any.

:19:35. > :19:38.Yet Hearts would get their goal. Suppose it found on Jamie Walker,

:19:39. > :19:44.they didn't looked like there was much content -- contact, not that

:19:45. > :19:55.Walker minded. Equal, but not for long. Griffiths in the heart of the

:19:56. > :20:01.action, but against opt. Enter Scott Sinclair, today, he made an instant

:20:02. > :20:08.impact. Sinclair's silky finish. What a start for life at Celtic for

:20:09. > :20:16.him, and what a start to league life for his manager. Aston Villa's start

:20:17. > :20:23.to life in the championship hasn't gone to plan, they lost 1-0

:20:24. > :20:28.Sheffield Wednesday. Defending like this won't help their bid to return

:20:29. > :20:33.to the top flight. This poor clearance was picked up the only

:20:34. > :20:38.goal of the game five minutes from time. With the summer break, it is

:20:39. > :20:41.now six months since Villa's competitive win.

:20:42. > :20:43.Queen's Park Rangers started their Championship season

:20:44. > :20:47.Defender Nedum Onuoha took full advantage of a mistake from former

:20:48. > :20:50.QPR goalkeeper, Rob Green, to open the scoring early on Rangers

:20:51. > :21:00.added two more goals after the break, through a penalty

:21:01. > :21:01.RangerS added two more goals

:21:02. > :21:08.and then this strike in injury time from Sebastien Polter.

:21:09. > :21:13.History has been made in golf today with Jim Furyk becoming the first

:21:14. > :21:15.player to shoot a round of 58 in PGA Tour history.

:21:16. > :21:18.The American's 12 under round came at the Travelers Championship

:21:19. > :21:21.Shooting low scores has become quite a habit for Furyk,

:21:22. > :21:25.he was also the last player to shoot a 59, having done so back in 2013.

:21:26. > :21:31.Time to return attentions to events in Rio now.

:21:32. > :21:45.More medals have been decided in the shooting, with Vietnam's athlete

:21:46. > :21:51.producing an incredible score with a new Olympic record in the air

:21:52. > :21:52.pistol. The Chinese won the women's competition.

:21:53. > :21:55.Great Britain's Women finished Top of Pool C in the Rugby Sevens.

:21:56. > :21:58.Captain Emily Scarrett scored two tries in a 22-nil win over Canada.

:21:59. > :22:00.The result means they avoid favourites Australia in the next

:22:01. > :22:03.round, playing Fiji instead 2012 silver medallist David Florence

:22:04. > :22:09.was fastest in the first heat of the men's Canoe Slalom Singles.

:22:10. > :22:12.He negotiated the Whitewater Stadium course without a penalty.

:22:13. > :22:16.The top 14 from two runs today qualify for Tuesday's semi finals.

:22:17. > :22:22.There was a good performance from Liam Pitchford

:22:23. > :22:39.After a bye in the first round he swept past Uzbekistan's

:22:40. > :22:42.Ranked 31 in the world, Pitchford proved too strong

:22:43. > :22:53.He faces a far tougher test in the third round later

:22:54. > :23:01.when he faces the ninth seed of South Korea.

:23:02. > :23:15.This time Colin Oates was beaten in the last 32 by France's

:23:16. > :23:18.The two couldn't be separated during the bout, with Commonwealth

:23:19. > :23:20.champion Oates penalised during the golden score phase -

:23:21. > :23:33.handing his opponent the victory. That's all from Olympic Sportsday.

:23:34. > :23:52.Andy Marriott is facing the Serbian, with both players being broken for

:23:53. > :23:59.two games all. These pictures live of Lizzie Armitstead, still some

:24:00. > :24:04.distance to go over 43 calamitous. She recovered after an early

:24:05. > :24:13.puncture. You can follow that on our website as well as radio five live.

:24:14. > :24:18.That is all from Olympic Sports They. And another at 730. I will see
