:00:10. > :00:17.A burning flame has symbolised the Olympic Games and now a modern

:00:17. > :00:22.flame on day 61 of its tour around the United Kingdom reaches Dover.

:00:22. > :00:26.We are a week to go until the opening ceremony of the Olympic

:00:26. > :00:33.Games Twitter 12. This is why they are here to see the Olympic

:00:33. > :00:43.cauldron being let. Be -- welcome to BBC South East Today's Olympic

:00:43. > :01:21.

:01:21. > :01:31.Welcome to Dover for a damp but special edition of South East Today

:01:31. > :01:31.

:01:31. > :01:35.as the torch relay arrives in the South East. For the next half-an-

:01:35. > :01:42.hour, we Pilbeam reaching up torch bearers and some of those people

:01:42. > :01:46.down mad. There has been a remarkable 70 day, 1000 mile

:01:46. > :01:51.journey to all four corners of Britain. Tonight, the flame is

:01:51. > :01:57.reaching Dover. The atmosphere is stiff -- brilliant despite the

:01:58. > :02:05.weather. There is anticipation here as the flame will come up Marine

:02:05. > :02:10.Parade. The flame left Hastings and travelled through places including

:02:10. > :02:15.Ashford and Folkestone as it made his way down to here in Deva. A

:02:15. > :02:25.spectacular entrance it was as it came into the Western Docks aboard

:02:25. > :02:25.

:02:25. > :02:31.the tall ship -- Tall Ships. We are expecting it around 7:20pm. We are

:02:31. > :02:36.looking forward to it. The Olympic organisers say 95% of the UK's

:02:36. > :02:42.population will have been within 10 miles of the Olympic torch as it

:02:42. > :02:48.comes around the whole of the country. It gets to 27th July for

:02:48. > :02:52.the opening ceremony. Before it gets to the opening ceremony, the

:02:53. > :03:00.crowds are going to be across Sussex and Kent and they will catch

:03:00. > :03:06.a glimpse of the flame. Robin Gibson has a story of the events.

:03:06. > :03:16.We will be coming to that event later. It is an extraordinary sight.

:03:16. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:32.Thousands of people have been that and seen it and many have touched

:03:32. > :03:41.it. The Olympic flame on the streets, in the villages, on the

:03:41. > :03:45.seafront, in the towns. A common phrase seems to join everyone.

:03:45. > :03:55.is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is awesome, a once-in-a-lifetime

:03:55. > :03:57.

:03:57. > :04:06.chance. Day 61 began in Hastings at -- on a ride down the cliff and

:04:06. > :04:11.then the East. This is what it is all about. It is what it must feel

:04:11. > :04:17.like to run down the road with the torch. They are ready to cheer

:04:17. > :04:22.anybody, even me. It is a massive event. You have to enjoy it. If you

:04:22. > :04:28.can't get a ticket, it is the closest we will get. First stop

:04:28. > :04:38.across the border into Kent and the village of Hamstreet. A hysterical

:04:38. > :04:48.moments. Very important moment for our children. Great to be here.

:04:48. > :04:48.

:04:48. > :04:58.then went into the heart of Ashford. Another turn and it was on his way

:04:58. > :05:03.

:05:03. > :05:13.back to the coast. I like looking at the torch. It was very long

:05:13. > :05:13.

:05:13. > :05:18.waiting and I had to have a little rest. A really good experience.

:05:18. > :05:25.lifetime opportunity and we will never forget it. No rest for the

:05:25. > :05:35.flame which continued East and a journey underground through part of

:05:35. > :05:35.

:05:35. > :05:43.the Channel -- Channel Tunnel. In Dover, it turned to the water on a

:05:43. > :05:51.huge tall ship. Can the flame ever before have seen at any more modes

:05:51. > :05:56.of transport? A day of history to savour for those that were there

:05:56. > :06:01.for many years to come. I have to say and have been told

:06:01. > :06:05.that the torch is making good progress through Dover. Fingers

:06:05. > :06:11.crossed it will arrive at the right time. One of the people that was

:06:11. > :06:15.carrying the torch has joined me on the stage. Ed Drake is Britain's

:06:15. > :06:21.best downhill skier. You were carrying the torch through Hastings

:06:21. > :06:25.today. It was amazing and such a privilege to run with the torch,

:06:25. > :06:29.something that everybody dreams of doing. What was the atmosphere like

:06:29. > :06:37.in Hastings? The weather was a lot better and the crowds were lining

:06:37. > :06:44.the streets. Loads of schoolkids were cheering. You're at Vancouver

:06:44. > :06:50.for 2010. For you there for the build up beforehand? Not really. We

:06:50. > :06:54.were in a training camp away from Vancouver and we didn't get to

:06:54. > :06:58.experience much of the ceremony. I didn't get to go to the opening

:06:58. > :07:04.ceremony. What is it like to be able to see this stuff that is

:07:04. > :07:14.going on beforehand? It is amazing to see. In Vancouver, you didn't

:07:14. > :07:14.

:07:14. > :07:21.see anything. None of this. It is unreal. The you are now training

:07:21. > :07:28.for 2014. 18 months away now, just round the corner. Thanks every --

:07:28. > :07:31.thanks ever so much. Dame Kelly Holmes is down at in the crowds to

:07:31. > :07:37.have a chat with some of the people who have come to see everything

:07:37. > :07:42.that is going on. There is a real buzz down here. Lots of people are

:07:42. > :07:46.very excited. We have Angela. How long have you been living down this

:07:47. > :07:54.way? I have lived here for 30 years and it is great to be part of

:07:54. > :08:04.history. Are you proud that it has come here? Yes. Great for the

:08:04. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:13.people to share it together. What is it like being here today?

:08:13. > :08:23.Fantastic and we will do it all again tomorrow. What about you?

:08:23. > :08:26.

:08:26. > :08:36.name is K2. One did you come today? We promised our doorstep fireworks

:08:36. > :08:36.

:08:36. > :08:41.on her birthday. It is your birthday? Anyone else? Why are you

:08:41. > :08:51.down here? It is a festival and I have never been here before. What

:08:51. > :08:55.do you think about the flame coming? Dover is a really good town.

:08:55. > :09:01.Are you looking forward to the Olympics? What about the flame

:09:01. > :09:07.coming? My daddy it is working at the Olympics and he is really

:09:07. > :09:11.excited. The flame will be here in 10 minutes or so. When the country

:09:11. > :09:21.hosted the Games the last time, it was a completely different affair

:09:21. > :09:22.

:09:22. > :09:32.and I went to make -- meet a guy a called Frank who got to enjoy it in

:09:32. > :09:38.Carrying the flame through Dover to a civic reception. The torch relay

:09:38. > :09:43.has always played a symbolic role in the Olympic movement. In 1948,

:09:43. > :09:48.the head of the austerity Games in London, there is no 70 day

:09:48. > :09:54.extravaganza around the country. Finally the British bringing up the

:09:54. > :09:59.rear as hosts of 1948. Post-war Britain was struggling and the

:09:59. > :10:06.torch relay was a chance to bring the country together. It was a

:10:06. > :10:13.great feeling to run through those clouds -- crowds cheering away. I

:10:13. > :10:17.am very proud of it and I wouldn't sell it for anything. For Frank

:10:17. > :10:22.Verge was selected to carry the torch through his home county of

:10:22. > :10:26.Kent. The country were still getting back, feet. It must have

:10:27. > :10:36.been a great honour to carry the Olympic torch. I really did enjoy

:10:36. > :10:42.it. I think all the people, they came out with this feeling of

:10:42. > :10:46.backing you and backing the Olympics. Instead of six years of

:10:46. > :10:49.the war, something nice was happening. 8000 torch bearers this

:10:49. > :10:53.year. There will be some amazing stories of how people have been

:10:53. > :10:59.given the chance to run with the torch. How did you get the

:10:59. > :11:05.opportunity to run with the torch in 1948? The committee decided we

:11:05. > :11:13.would have an eight mile race and the winner was to carry it. There

:11:13. > :11:18.were 15 starters. I've won. By a lot? Actually, yes, I think I won

:11:18. > :11:22.by several hundred yards. What do you feel now when you see other

:11:22. > :11:27.people having the opportunity to run with the torch? They will be

:11:27. > :11:37.honoured and happy and I hope they get as many people clapping as I

:11:37. > :11:40.

:11:40. > :11:50.did. The 14th Olympiad. 1948. Olympia to London, with thanks to

:11:50. > :11:52.

:11:52. > :11:57.the bearer. Which I am happy to say, happened to be me. Popcorn, the

:11:57. > :12:01.food of champions. One of the great privileges of being here is I have

:12:01. > :12:05.this lady standing alongside me. One of Britain's greatest Olympians

:12:05. > :12:10.and your performance eight years ago now is etched in all of our

:12:11. > :12:17.minds. I will have a chat with you but first, let us remind ourselves

:12:17. > :12:27.of those fantastic moments. Kelly Holmes, going for two gold medals.

:12:27. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:39.Kelly Holmes for Great Britain wins the 1500 metres title. That is the

:12:39. > :12:46.greatest performers in the history of Olympic running. Look at, in

:12:46. > :12:54.your hands there, to an Olympic gold medals. I can't believe it is

:12:54. > :13:01.two years ago. This is so much in my mind, that moment. What is great

:13:01. > :13:05.is so many people will feel that the Olympic spirit. I remember

:13:05. > :13:10.watching Q When that both of those medals. The other fantastic than it

:13:10. > :13:20.was you on the stage in London when the jack rock make those

:13:20. > :13:24.

:13:24. > :13:31.announcement that it was the City Jacques Rogge. My it eyes nearly

:13:31. > :13:35.popped out of my head. I jumped on it Steve Cram. Seeing those

:13:35. > :13:39.thousands of people coming down and being part of that moment. One of

:13:39. > :13:46.my other great memories was in Tunbridge Wells when you came back

:13:46. > :13:50.with those gold medals. That open- top bus was just extraordinary.

:13:50. > :13:56.Yesterday, I was able to do an event than bring the event into

:13:56. > :14:02.Tunbridge. Big memories of that day. It was amazing. Everyone came out

:14:02. > :14:12.for me. There is a lot of people who are hoping to emulate Dame

:14:12. > :14:15.

:14:15. > :14:19.Kelly at the Olympics this year and For the last decade, Lisa Dobriskey

:14:19. > :14:23.has been one of the UK's best middle-distance runners, and

:14:23. > :14:27.winning world silver and Commonwealth gold medals but it is

:14:27. > :14:31.a Olympic success she craves. However, her place at the London

:14:31. > :14:35.Games appeared all but over following injury and illness

:14:35. > :14:42.including a blood clot on her lung which was diagnosed as life-

:14:42. > :14:47.threatening. I was advised to take time off. I took the weekend off. I

:14:47. > :14:52.was OK to train but I had to train with a doctor present. I felt sorry

:14:52. > :14:58.for him standing outside in the cold with oxygen in case something

:14:58. > :15:02.went wrong. We had to take a few risks. This is so important to me.

:15:02. > :15:06.I just wanted to know I have tried my best to get there. It was worth

:15:06. > :15:11.it in the end. Successful teams meet someone who is special and

:15:11. > :15:19.that is what Ashley Jackson is. Two years ago, the hockey star was

:15:19. > :15:24.named the best world player and it is his aim to get the first GP

:15:24. > :15:33.medal since 1988. You sit in the car on the way to training and you

:15:33. > :15:37.think about winning that goal. You really are excited. You get on the

:15:37. > :15:41.pitch and then someone tells you to run around the pitch until you

:15:41. > :15:48.can't run any more and it disappears! It will be excitement

:15:48. > :15:53.to get it started and I can't wait. Few competitors can boast of three

:15:53. > :16:01.gold medals in their teams but that is what Sir six shooter, Charlotte

:16:01. > :16:06.Kerwood, achieved. -- Sussex shooter. In Beijing, I got booed

:16:06. > :16:14.when I was shooting. I don't think he was anything malicious, it was

:16:14. > :16:20.just that I was on with a Chinese girl. Every time I hit a target, I

:16:20. > :16:25.got booed and when I missed, I got cheers. Going to London, I know

:16:25. > :16:29.everyone will be there to support me. The torch is going to be

:16:30. > :16:39.arriving imminently. Any moment now, we will see the flame as it is

:16:39. > :16:43.coming up. Everyone is getting ready. Lisa Dobriskey, she has had

:16:43. > :16:49.an injured refilled couple of years. You know about preparing for the

:16:49. > :16:54.big championships. She has had a hardier. She is a championship

:16:54. > :17:01.runner and is back on form. She would have a good games. Have you

:17:01. > :17:09.spoken to her? I saw her at Crystal Palace. I know she will be there on

:17:09. > :17:19.time ready to go. When you get to the Games, it clicks back in. She

:17:19. > :17:22.

:17:22. > :17:27.would be there and we will have The whole point of today is that it

:17:27. > :17:31.is not just about Olympians but his is also about people you have not

:17:31. > :17:37.heard about Michael Oren who has been carrying the flame today.

:17:37. > :17:42.was a light? It was so exciting. I could not believe it. One higher

:17:42. > :17:50.than that I had to was my friends to pinch me. I just could not wait.

:17:50. > :17:54.He have raised a lot of money. it is 140,000. How have you raise

:17:54. > :18:00.that money? Is it started off with small things like cupcakes sales

:18:00. > :18:04.and then it got too big things like glider flights and sleep walks in

:18:04. > :18:09.pyjamas. Everything. Well done. I really hope you remember that

:18:09. > :18:12.moment for the rest of your life. I will. I was very fortunate

:18:12. > :18:22.because I got to meet up with Lauren a few weeks ago before the

:18:22. > :18:23.

:18:23. > :18:27.Torch was running today. I spoke to some other people taking part today.

:18:27. > :18:37.Lauren, this is the actual street where you will be carrying the

:18:37. > :18:42.

:18:43. > :18:48.Olympic Torch. I am so excited, I In all of spina bifida, Lauren's

:18:48. > :18:52.parents were warned she may never be able to walk. Now she is 12 and

:18:52. > :18:55.she is great for that she can lead an active life of. She has been

:18:55. > :19:00.waged -- she has raised the huge amount for charity. It started off

:19:01. > :19:04.when I was seven and I did small things like selling cupcakes and

:19:04. > :19:10.races and then I started off, the biggest thing I did when I was

:19:10. > :19:15.about it was a glider flight. The most recent thing I did was a

:19:15. > :19:19.skydive. That was in Milton Keynes for the Alzheimer's Society.

:19:19. > :19:23.has been recognised for her work with many awards. Because I can

:19:23. > :19:31.walk, I can do things for them so why can help them. I can help them

:19:31. > :19:36.with equipment and stuff. That is what some of my charities do.

:19:36. > :19:39.full-time firefighter, Mike Pitney was nominated for his charity work.

:19:39. > :19:43.Ten-year-old Sophie farmer has a terminal lung disorder and has

:19:43. > :19:47.become a close friend of the family. She is an inspiration because she

:19:47. > :19:51.is running around with less oxygen than anyone else and she gets worn

:19:52. > :19:59.out a lot quicker than anyone else. She has a big beaming smile, that

:19:59. > :20:04.was good timing! She is just an inspiration. She is special! Yes,

:20:04. > :20:07.she has. She loves coming down here. She loves going on the fire engines

:20:07. > :20:14.and sits upstairs with them and have a drink and plays games

:20:14. > :20:20.upstairs with them. She loves it. She loves in fire engines outside.

:20:20. > :20:24.It makes such a big difference. Kierun Baker will be carrying the

:20:24. > :20:30.Torch through his home town in Dover. At first I did not believe

:20:30. > :20:35.it but I gradually got used to it. The main bit is getting told about

:20:35. > :20:40.it in assembly in front of everybody, that was nervous part.

:20:40. > :20:45.He was nominated by his teacher for his tremendous personal progress

:20:45. > :20:50.since coming to this school three years ago. He was just wandering

:20:50. > :20:55.the corridors and not really engaging. He has now Liam person

:20:55. > :20:59.who is confident to speak to people like you and tell people about what

:20:59. > :21:03.he has done and he goes to other schools and engages to other people.

:21:03. > :21:08.He would not have believed it when he arrived that he could do that

:21:08. > :21:12.now. You are a prefect here now. Does that make you proud?

:21:12. > :21:19.Definitely. At my old school I never thought I would be this far

:21:19. > :21:24.but I have changed a hell of a lot. Now what the great thing about

:21:24. > :21:27.today is the thing that people like Graeme Faber have had the

:21:27. > :21:31.opportunity to actually carry the Torch and you can see that this is

:21:32. > :21:36.the man who was bringing the flame up the final steps, as he arrives

:21:36. > :21:42.here at Marine Parade in Dover. He is carrying the Olympic flame on

:21:42. > :21:47.the last leg and to light the cauldron where it will stay

:21:47. > :21:52.overnight here in Dover. It is a marvellous moment for Graeme Faber.

:21:52. > :21:59.He was actually at the London Olympics last time it was here in

:21:59. > :22:08.the UK. Let us leave you with a look at the stage as Graeme Faber

:22:08. > :22:18.like so cauldron for this evening. -- lights the cauldron for this

:22:18. > :22:39.

:22:39. > :22:48.Amazing, what a magical moment! Come and join us, we have a very

:22:48. > :22:56.special guest... What an absolutely extraordinary moment. They are the

:22:56. > :23:05.white cliffs of Dover in the background. And I spoke to Frank

:23:05. > :23:10.Verge about the 1948 Torch Relay and he was on stage. We are going

:23:11. > :23:17.to have a chat with Graeme Faber. 76-year-old, how was it for you?

:23:17. > :23:21.Brilliant! I cannot speak too much. How was the run? It was absolutely

:23:21. > :23:26.fine. One of the reasons you were nominated, far from all the amazing

:23:26. > :23:31.stuff you have done for charity, you were at the London Games as a

:23:31. > :23:36.little boy in 1948. What you remember? I remember watching Jesse

:23:36. > :23:46.Owens do the 100 metres. I remember a lot of it. That I particularly

:23:46. > :23:46.

:23:47. > :23:51.remember. Come I am so excited about the 2012 Olympics. That is

:23:51. > :23:56.something else. Amazing to see two in your lifetime in your country?

:23:56. > :24:06.And to take part like this as well! House you find the strength to run

:24:06. > :24:10.every day? I am only 76! Thank you very much. That is it from us for

:24:10. > :24:14.now. What a fantastic moment! The rain has just started to come down

:24:14. > :24:21.again a little bit but it will not dampen any body's enthusiasm. We

:24:21. > :24:26.have got from special guests with us. Hugh Robinson and Steve Backley,

:24:26. > :24:30.Olympic minister and an Olympian. Are you quite pleased with how

:24:30. > :24:35.things are going? Yes, it would be nice if the weather perked up but

:24:35. > :24:39.that apart the... In spite of the weather it has been a fantastic

:24:39. > :24:43.evening and that is the story of the Olympic Torch Relay. We have

:24:43. > :24:47.her fantastic stories from the people are well the Torch today.

:24:47. > :24:50.People really are picking up on the legacy. If you look at the Torch

:24:50. > :24:54.Relay from the moment it a ride in the country, the real story of it

:24:54. > :24:59.has not been about the Olympics and sport, it has been about the

:24:59. > :25:01.remarkable stories of the people who have carried the Torch. I was

:25:02. > :25:06.in Hastings last night with a group of runners who were all telling

:25:06. > :25:11.their stories on the bus. There was one man who broke down in tears. It

:25:11. > :25:15.was just fantastic, you hear these remarkable stories from people who

:25:16. > :25:19.never advertise themselves normally and that is great. That is what

:25:19. > :25:23.this is all about, people ate coming together for this one moment.

:25:23. > :25:27.Feed, you were doing the Torch tomorrow. I know you are very

:25:27. > :25:32.excited because all I can see our yacht weeks about the fact you are
