:00:02. > :00:12.go over now to Steve Parry and Roger Johnson to welcome the
:00:12. > :00:21.
:00:21. > :00:28.What a great prude. We will be late joining The One Show. -- Prelude.
:00:28. > :00:35.It is all kicking off. I hope the flame has not lost its no joke.
:00:35. > :00:45.are on the balcony of this building. Thousands in front of us. Wherever
:00:45. > :01:00.
:01:00. > :01:04.you are watching, the cameras will It's been an incredible journey and
:01:04. > :01:07.it's not over yet. We are here live at the Pier Head waiting to give
:01:07. > :01:10.you the first glimpse of the torch as it takes to the water and
:01:10. > :01:13.crosses the River on the iconic ferry across the Mersey. Some
:01:13. > :01:16.amazing pictures from the helicopter as well. Our cameras are
:01:16. > :01:23.on roof's and boats and planes waiting to catch the torch as it
:01:23. > :01:27.comes to this magnificent waterfront. It is birdie to be
:01:27. > :01:30.greeted by the thousands of people here. The We'll be talking to the
:01:30. > :01:38.local soldier blinded in Iraq who will be bringing the torch back
:01:38. > :01:44.home and we'll be hearing the stories of the torchbearers. Look
:01:44. > :01:52.at that. What a view. I do not think there is a better backdrop
:01:53. > :01:58.for the torch relay than this. is absolutely stunning. We were in
:01:58. > :02:05.at Chester on Tuesday, Bolton last night. Wonderful welcomes but that
:02:05. > :02:09.is special. It's unbelievable to see those pictures. I used to drive
:02:09. > :02:14.along this road to training. To see so many excited about the Olympics,
:02:14. > :02:21.some people pessimistic but the north-west, the country has been
:02:21. > :02:25.won over. Is it different experiencing this as opposed to an
:02:25. > :02:31.athlete? As an athlete, you do not concentrate on this because you are
:02:31. > :02:36.focused on the running. I think it is wonderful. I did not know it was
:02:36. > :02:40.such a good party! We will look at some of the highlights now as the
:02:40. > :02:46.ferry makes its final docking procedures. The ferry has been all
:02:46. > :02:51.around the region over the past few days. We will look in a minute as
:02:51. > :02:54.we see the flame and making its final arrival into Liverpool, the
:02:54. > :03:04.highlights of the journey around the north-west over the past few
:03:04. > :03:35.
:03:35. > :03:41.It is for everyone at supported me. A unique experience. Worth it?
:03:41. > :03:46.Definitely. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I can't believe how
:03:46. > :03:52.many people are here despite the weather. It is about the Olympics
:03:52. > :03:56.and it's really exciting. It will only happen once in our lifetimes.
:03:56. > :04:06.People were lining the streets shouting my name and I didn't know
:04:06. > :04:09.
:04:09. > :04:19.most of them! It was exciting. In Bolton, thousands had gathered
:04:19. > :04:20.
:04:21. > :04:24.on the roof outside the town hall. I have grown up on the streets and
:04:24. > :04:34.to be running with the torch means a lot to me and my family and
:04:34. > :04:35.
:04:35. > :04:45.everything to Bolton. And now the party begins! You get swept along
:04:45. > :04:47.
:04:47. > :04:52.with excitement of it all. It makes Knotty Ash part of the Olympics. I
:04:52. > :04:57.shall be running in the egg-and- spoon race! Some of the amazing
:04:57. > :05:02.scenes we have seen as the tortured makes its way around the north-west.
:05:02. > :05:07.Some incredible scenes. The best job of the day has gone to Kate
:05:07. > :05:15.Simms. She has her own personal chopper to ride on for the
:05:15. > :05:21.evening!! She is watching it now as the torch comes in. What an
:05:21. > :05:25.opportunity for me. The view is spectacular. The journey it usually
:05:25. > :05:32.takes 10 minutes on the ferry but it has stopped in the river to make
:05:32. > :05:36.sure that the torch arrives on time. There has been a fairy here since
:05:36. > :05:42.the 12th century but never a journey quite like this. You can
:05:42. > :05:46.see the camera moving towards it. Craig Lundberg has been standing
:05:46. > :05:52.proudly on the bow. He will greet the thousands of people who are
:05:52. > :05:58.waiting with bated breath to see the torch lighting up the cold and.
:05:58. > :06:08.What a night! We think five minutes or less before the ferry docks. We
:06:08. > :06:13.would keep abreast of it. You come here the ferry sounding its horn.
:06:13. > :06:19.Steve Parry, former Olympic swimmer, it is great. Absolutely
:06:19. > :06:25.unbelievable. The horn is very loud. There must be 20,000 people down
:06:25. > :06:30.here revelling in the noise. It's fantastic. Kate mentioned Craig
:06:30. > :06:36.Lundberg who is bringing it on shore. He was blinded in Iraq. What
:06:36. > :06:43.a moment for him. It will be unbelievable for him. That is what
:06:43. > :06:46.I love about the relay, it is not just about has been athletes, it is
:06:46. > :06:51.about the people they did so much to the country and that is what
:06:51. > :06:57.makes it so amazing. It's wonderful. It is incredible. The noise when
:06:57. > :07:02.they blow the horn. There is such a great spirit among everyone. And a
:07:02. > :07:07.real mix of people. There are families down there, the senior
:07:07. > :07:15.generation. It is wonderful to see everyone excited. I am sure the
:07:15. > :07:19.weather helps. OK, before Craig gets off the boat, and comes aboard,
:07:19. > :07:29.let's look at some of the teenagers who will be running with the torch
:07:29. > :07:35.
:07:35. > :07:40.as it makes its way around the North West later. Take three
:07:40. > :07:45.teenagers for a taste of what it means to be a torch-bearer.
:07:45. > :07:50.remember the day when others 14 and carry the Olympic torch. It's a
:07:50. > :07:56.once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. is something ordinary people we get
:07:56. > :07:59.to do something great. Milly from Ulverston has been through much
:07:59. > :08:04.including years of surgery to counter a rare genetic disorder.
:08:04. > :08:10.She showed her thanks for the care she has received by sea fog
:08:10. > :08:16.collecting over 100,000 for charity. Her mum was first to find
:08:16. > :08:26.out she would carry the Olympic flame. Did you run around the
:08:26. > :08:29.bedroom? Well, it was amazing, I was speechless. Is it real? She was
:08:29. > :08:34.also chosen because of their devotion to her oldest sister who
:08:34. > :08:39.has terminal cancer. They have become a fund-raising Partnership.
:08:39. > :08:43.I am surprised the amount of money she raised but I am not surprised
:08:43. > :08:53.she has been raising money for charity because she is that sort of
:08:53. > :08:54.
:08:54. > :09:02.girl. Ben is an inspiration to his mates, his mother and more.
:09:02. > :09:06.fantastic personality. Enthusiastic, it goes on. He is an ambassador.
:09:07. > :09:11.The 14-year-old was born with a form of dwarfism, along with a
:09:11. > :09:15.skull deformity be needed lent the surgery. He is still having
:09:15. > :09:20.treatment for his ankles but nothing sluicing down. When I get
:09:20. > :09:29.older, I will be able to say to my friends when I am 30 years old,
:09:29. > :09:34.when I was 14 I carry the Olympic torch. Katie from Preston is one of
:09:34. > :09:38.lives carers. Whether a fund in the sun with her nephew or fund with a
:09:38. > :09:43.family. Six brothers and one sister. She was nominated by teachers and
:09:43. > :09:48.friends for the way she has coped since the death of her mother.
:09:48. > :09:53.Carrying the torch, she says, is unbelievable. It is something
:09:53. > :10:03.ordinary people do not get a chance to do. We will be doing it. It is
:10:03. > :10:05.
:10:05. > :10:11.A special day when they get to run with a torch. We are joined by
:10:11. > :10:17.Martin who is one of the taekwondo team. A special day for you. You
:10:17. > :10:24.have been selected. Yes, an amazing day, especially being hit with my
:10:24. > :10:30.daughter and the support is amazing. I am so proud to represent the
:10:30. > :10:35.country. She looks bemused. Yes, she would be excited if she knew
:10:35. > :10:39.what was happening. How will it be with your daughter watching at the
:10:39. > :10:45.home Olympic Games. I am not usually an emotional person but
:10:45. > :10:50.today I was getting quite emotional with all the support and the
:10:50. > :10:55.messages from everyone and it was exciting and for my family to be
:10:55. > :11:01.there as well as amazing. We wish you well. Thank you for talking to
:11:01. > :11:11.us. The as Craig Lundberg brings the plane home to Liverpool, real
:11:11. > :11:17.
:11:17. > :11:24.butterflies in his stomach. -- the Words cannot explain it. I feel so
:11:24. > :11:28.on its that the people of Liverpool have picked me to be the final
:11:28. > :11:33.torch-bearer and its representation of Liverpool and what being a
:11:33. > :11:38.Scouser is all about. One of the reasons he were chosen is because
:11:38. > :11:47.people are so proud of how you have rebuilt alive. At the end of the
:11:47. > :11:53.day, I have done what I thought was best. And how I should live my life
:11:53. > :12:00.and getting back on the track. How his father had? Hard work! Not just
:12:00. > :12:06.because I can't Sir -- C. I have had my moments. I am gutted I can't
:12:06. > :12:12.see him. But I get lots of different things out of it. Air
:12:12. > :12:22.least I am here to hold him. It is a great year for the country. And
:12:22. > :12:30.what a thing to look back on when he is older. To find the news
:12:30. > :12:32.clippings and the Olympic torch I will be carrying. We you keep it?
:12:32. > :12:37.Yes. I might donate it to the museum and leave it there so
:12:37. > :12:45.everyone can see it. It is not my torch. It is the people of
:12:45. > :12:49.Liverpool who nominated any to be the torch-bearer. I can't see it on
:12:49. > :12:58.my mantelpiece. I would rather everyone can share it in the museum
:12:58. > :13:02.and be a part of Liverpool's history. That is the remarkable
:13:02. > :13:07.story of Craig Lundberg he was blinded in Iraq said in his country
:13:07. > :13:12.and now has the honour of bringing the torch home to Liverpool as we
:13:12. > :13:16.welcome viewers on the BBC News Channel. What a proud moment,
:13:16. > :13:22.butterflies in his stomach, the latest person to carry the torch on
:13:22. > :13:27.its remarkable relay, 1000 relay runners, 8,000 miles around the UK,
:13:27. > :13:31.the shot from the helicopter above the ferry terminal on the River
:13:31. > :13:37.Mersey is a really amazing one but as the camera pulls back, take a
:13:37. > :13:43.look at the crowd. They are waiting to welcome Craig, the Liverpool
:13:43. > :13:53.Olympic flame, belie the building in the centre of the shot. It is a
:13:53. > :14:01.stunning view an historic evening. Steve Parry, a proud Liverpudlian,
:14:01. > :14:11.Pratt Scouser, this is quite a night. What a night for the city.
:14:11. > :14:12.
:14:12. > :14:16.The anxiety Craig must be feeling about it all. The people that have
:14:16. > :14:24.come to welcome it. I did not realise how much the country would
:14:24. > :14:31.be gripped by this occasion. Craig has had a remarkable few weeks. He
:14:31. > :14:35.became a father for the first time four weeks ago. He is showing off!
:14:35. > :14:42.To many good things going on in his life! People have been arriving
:14:42. > :14:47.since 4 o'clock waiting to get their touch of the Games. And you
:14:47. > :14:52.have stood on the blocks ready for an Olympic final. Is this almost as
:14:52. > :15:00.exciting? Yes, and the build up to the Home Olympics is just as good
:15:01. > :15:05.or better. Going to be Games in 2004, that was lovely. A but it
:15:06. > :15:11.means so much more to so many people this time around. You get to
:15:11. > :15:21.showcase everything that is great about Britain. And also we will win
:15:21. > :15:23.
:15:23. > :15:28.Look at the vu! You said earlier that a short of when it arrives in
:15:28. > :15:33.London, there is no better view. mum and dad for years have gone on
:15:33. > :15:39.about how the Three Graces does not get enough air time. There they are.
:15:39. > :15:45.It is a wonderful backdrop with the Mersey. I cannot believe how far
:15:45. > :15:49.the torch goes. It started in Bolton this morning. They must be
:15:49. > :15:57.running fast. The sense of expectation is building. Let us go
:15:58. > :16:02.to the crowd with Dianne Oxberry. These ladies are very much in the
:16:02. > :16:08.Olympic spirit. You of volunteers for London 2012. Why did you want
:16:08. > :16:13.to get involved? I volunteered in Liverpool and when the Olympics was
:16:13. > :16:18.announced I really wanted to be involved. What is it about it that
:16:18. > :16:22.draws people to the Olympics? think it is the spirit. Like today,
:16:22. > :16:26.everybody coming together and celebrating and hopefully the
:16:26. > :16:36.Olympics will inspire a generation to come together as communities and
:16:36. > :16:38.
:16:38. > :16:46.take a sport. You have a job, tell us what it is? Way finding.
:16:46. > :16:50.give people directions. Good luck! I also just want to show you this
:16:50. > :16:56.17 months old. He has a full set of teeth. Why did you want to bring
:16:56. > :17:05.him down? It is a wonderful opportunity. We will never see this
:17:06. > :17:11.again. We feel proud due to show him the best. -- to show him this.
:17:11. > :17:17.You will make sure he remembers it. It is a fantastic night. Back to
:17:17. > :17:24.you. Thank you. Now to the bird's eye
:17:24. > :17:28.view. Kate Simms is hovering above the River Mersey. We keep seeing
:17:28. > :17:32.flickering so of the flame down there by the landing stage. It is
:17:32. > :17:37.here in Liverpool. We are waiting fog Craig Lundberg to make the
:17:37. > :17:41.journey up to the stage now. What a welcome he will get. A good few
:17:41. > :17:47.weeks for him having just become a father as well. They are expecting
:17:47. > :17:51.20,000 people down its there. It is a spectacular view from up here
:17:51. > :17:58.with the Three Graces in the background. They are just six days
:17:58. > :18:03.in the flame I believe now. It is quite difficult to see from up here.
:18:03. > :18:07.Pretty soon they will be running up the torch up to the stage it to
:18:07. > :18:11.write that -- to light the colt runs. They know how to party in
:18:11. > :18:20.England but nowhere quite like Liverpool. I will hand back to you
:18:20. > :18:27.now. Thank you very much. Here is Craig Lundberg. What a proud moment
:18:27. > :18:32.for him. He became a father recently false start jogging along
:18:32. > :18:37.in front of the thousands of people. What a proud moment for him.
:18:38. > :18:43.Instead serving his country in Iraq. One of the many injured servicemen
:18:43. > :18:47.and women who have been involved in the torch relay. Still many more
:18:47. > :18:53.miles to go. Still many more towns and villages and communities to
:18:53. > :18:58.visit. But here in Liverpool be proud city of Liverpool packed with
:18:58. > :19:07.proud Liverpudlians tonight. No one is prouder than that man here,
:19:07. > :19:11.Steve Parry. You can feel the anticipation in the crowd. This is
:19:11. > :19:16.what it is about, the power of sport to bring people together. It
:19:16. > :19:22.is wonderful. He is just making his way up the steps, heading towards
:19:22. > :19:26.the stage. Then at the iconic moment when Craig Lundberg will
:19:26. > :19:33.step forward to transfers the Olympic flame to the cauldron. It
:19:33. > :19:36.will become Liverpool's albeit only for tonight. It goes on to the Isle
:19:36. > :19:40.of Man tomorrow. Then to the Olympic Stadium at the end of July
:19:40. > :19:45.for the opening ceremony. Craig Lundberg has the flame at the
:19:45. > :19:55.moment. He is about to come on stage. Quite rightly, Liverpool's
:19:55. > :20:01.
:20:01. > :20:09.eludes them. -- Liverpool salutes He is going to make his way over it
:20:09. > :20:14.now. The final few steps. So many people, so many families here, so
:20:14. > :20:19.many young children. I guess some where Craig Lundberg's wife and his
:20:19. > :20:26.baby son will be here as well. There will be a countdown. Craig
:20:26. > :20:36.Lundberg will do the honours, the proudest man in Liverpool. 5, 4, 3,
:20:36. > :20:37.
:20:37. > :20:42.2, one. Liverpool, the Olympic flame is yours! It is a proud
:20:42. > :20:49.moment for one man, a proud moment against an iconic backdrop in the
:20:49. > :20:54.City. The Olympic flame is a Liverpool's flame. This is your
:20:54. > :21:00.moment in history. Makes the hairs on the back of the hour necks stand
:21:00. > :21:04.on end. It is unbelievable. Imagine the children and what they are
:21:04. > :21:08.thinking about. They will remember this for the rest of their lives.
:21:08. > :21:12.Hopefully a lot of them will want to get involved in sport. There are
:21:12. > :21:15.lots of people who have done great things in their communities who
:21:16. > :21:19.have been given the opportunity to run with the flame but quite
:21:19. > :21:24.fitting that some of our brave soldiers who have been injured in
:21:24. > :21:28.combat get the chance too. Absolutely. This is the message
:21:28. > :21:32.about the Olympic Games, it is not about the athletes, but of course,
:21:32. > :21:41.they have something to do with it, but what about the volunteers who
:21:41. > :21:45.give their time, the servicemen? It is for everyone. Any moment now, we
:21:45. > :21:50.are hearing from a couple of celebrities on the big screen, John
:21:50. > :21:59.Bishop is giving a message to the comedienne -- the Liverpool
:21:59. > :22:06.comedian is giving a a message to Craig Lundberg. What an honour it
:22:06. > :22:11.is for him. John Bishop's message has finished. Now onto the stage
:22:11. > :22:16.will come Tony Livesey, a familiar face in the north-west and a
:22:16. > :22:26.familiar voice to listeners of BBC Radio 5 Live. He will told to Craig
:22:26. > :22:30.
:22:30. > :22:40.Good evening, Liverpool. Prepare to go wild because guess what, you are
:22:40. > :22:46.
:22:46. > :22:52.live on BBC One! Give us a wave! Listen, there are 10,000 to 20,000
:22:52. > :22:56.of you out there. I forget you are here far Craig Lundberg of you are
:22:56. > :23:06.here for the ferry. I think you are here for Craig Lundberg. How does
:23:06. > :23:11.it feel, Craig Lundberg? How has your day been? It has been radical.
:23:11. > :23:14.I am so proud to represent Liverpool and I am made at the have
:23:14. > :23:19.picked me to carry the Olympic torch. I hope I have done Liverpool
:23:19. > :23:24.proud. You could not have picked a better person to help me carry it
:23:24. > :23:27.as well. The lad next to me, he helps make off the roof black
:23:27. > :23:34.knight and what an honour it is to be doing at the Olympic torch with
:23:34. > :23:37.them as well. Thank you, Liverpool. I do not know whether you know this
:23:37. > :23:42.but since Craig Lundberg had his injuries, he has done some
:23:42. > :23:47.remarkable things. He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and played in
:23:47. > :23:55.love of football. What drives you on? I am just a Scouser, aren't I
:23:55. > :23:59.have?! Plain and simple. I know you said a few words, but these guys
:23:59. > :24:07.have supported uses day one, have you got a special message for the
:24:07. > :24:12.people of doable? -- the people of Liverpool? And a city has the best
:24:12. > :24:18.buy land, the best people and we have shown it tonight. We have
:24:18. > :24:23.shown the rest of the country that they have got to follow us now.
:24:23. > :24:33.Listen, this the next answer that the Craig Lundberg gives will
:24:33. > :24:34.
:24:35. > :24:44.require you and I guarantee to go... What happened to you three weeks
:24:44. > :24:50.ago? I had a baby boy, Ben. He was born on 5th May. Best thing ever.
:24:51. > :24:56.You are a hero for what you have done today, you are a hero for the
:24:56. > :25:01.people of Liverpool. I think I have heard that you want to climb Mount
:25:01. > :25:07.Everest or go to the North Pole. The main thing is being a dad.
:25:07. > :25:12.is harder than going up Everest! Making sure I do that right and
:25:13. > :25:22.doing Ben proud. I don't know. See what comes. Ladies and a Dutchman,
:25:22. > :25:28.Craig Lundberg! -- ladies and gentlemen.
