:01:58. > :02:02.Paralympics Correspondent. You have not managed to hold the flame. They

:02:02. > :02:12.knew that something that began in such a small way we dent in this

:02:12. > :02:13.

:02:13. > :02:20.arena. Mighty things from small beginnings crawl. That applies to

:02:21. > :02:30.this Scottish leg. Who would have thought that when former school

:02:31. > :02:31.

:02:31. > :02:36.teacher brought a tiny flame of the ferry, that this project would more

:02:36. > :02:42.and coal. It has become increasingly clear that Scotland

:02:42. > :02:47.has taken advantage of this once- in-a-lifetime opportunity. We are

:02:47. > :02:52.witness to this famous Olympic torch. They have come out to

:02:52. > :03:01.support in hundreds of thousands of are the last few days. Over the

:03:01. > :03:09.last few days, more than 700 people, some from the world of art and

:03:09. > :03:19.sport, have had the honour of carrying the torch. Our country has

:03:19. > :03:21.

:03:21. > :03:26.provided a magnificent backdrop. It seemed that on kick-start for

:03:27. > :03:36.the Olympic flame. How would the people take to London 2012 coming

:03:36. > :03:44.to Scotland? What are you doing our best early in the morning? I am

:03:44. > :03:52.here to see the Olympic torch. There is a lot more people than I

:03:52. > :04:02.expected because it is so early. People are flying flags. Enjoy

:04:55. > :05:00.It is wonderful. A great experience. Who are these torch-bearers

:05:00. > :05:04.carrying the torch for 300 yards and receiving all the applause?

:05:04. > :05:11.Over 1,000 people are nominated by sponsors or connected to the

:06:10. > :06:20.all they have achieved in gathering 4, 3, 2, 1. This is the best thing

:06:20. > :06:27.

:06:27. > :06:37.So am truly inspirational images. For those of a certain vintage, and

:06:37. > :06:39.

:06:39. > :06:49.night in Moscow in 1980 lives long in the memory. Let us take a look.

:06:49. > :06:57.

:06:57. > :07:01.Wells is doing well. Gold medal is awarded to Alan Wells. The man

:07:01. > :07:09.himself is here with us. One of Scotland was my greatest Olympians,

:07:09. > :07:16.Alan Wells. It has to be set we're having a few sound problems. We

:07:16. > :07:21.will try to master it. Watching that, you were turning your head

:07:21. > :07:28.away, yet he does it bring it all back to you? It brings back great

:07:28. > :07:36.memories. It certainly gives me a cold shiver when I see ma go

:07:36. > :07:46.skimming like that. I was expecting you to come with you blind tonight.

:07:46. > :07:46.

:07:46. > :07:55.Do you have your medal? I have it. That is an amazing piece of gold to

:07:55. > :08:00.have with you. We will be talking to you later about more score. As

:08:00. > :08:05.we have er, it is about gold medals. The story of the torch is also

:08:05. > :08:15.about the people who have carried it. Let us take a look at one

:08:15. > :08:28.

:08:28. > :08:38.One of the first people to carry the torch and Scotland was someone

:08:38. > :08:38.

:08:38. > :08:43.with a unique way of fund-raising. We are raising money for charities.

:08:43. > :08:53.They want to get a defibrillator into every village on the island.

:08:53. > :09:00.

:09:00. > :09:07.That would be 1,500 per day fibber later. -- per machine. Like many

:09:07. > :09:13.torch-bearers, this woman's background is in deeds, not sport.

:09:13. > :09:23.I do not think it was as beggars what it was at first. As time went

:09:23. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:32.on, I realised what a massive thing it was. I am not a runner. There is

:09:32. > :09:37.that side of it. How I managed to do 300 yards without collapsing...

:09:37. > :09:43.Even though it was six and the morning, she managed the brief job

:09:43. > :09:53.for the people of Stranraer. I am the only person from Ireland to is

:09:53. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :10:05.doing it. It will do a lot of good for the community. -- from the

:10:05. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:18.On Orkney, this man was nominated to carry the torch for all his work

:10:18. > :10:24.helping others in the island community. He helped set the tables

:10:24. > :10:34.for all meals. He held serve cups of tea when people come in. After

:10:34. > :10:35.

:10:35. > :10:45.they have had a chat, Sean helps so -- held serve the main meal. In

:10:45. > :10:47.

:10:47. > :10:52.between that, he has given for a lot of pressure. -- pleasure.

:10:52. > :11:02.well as volunteering at the Salvation Army, Sean is heavily

:11:02. > :11:03.

:11:03. > :11:10.involved in restoration projects. Because of all the different

:11:10. > :11:20.experiences he has had, he can sure what the people with Down's

:11:20. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:29.syndrome can do. It is just another thing that, his view of life,

:11:29. > :11:33.carrying the torch is something special. We sometimes have to get

:11:33. > :11:39.him back up with a general life but when I saw him running with the

:11:39. > :11:49.torch, smiling and waving, he was just the same as any other torch-

:11:49. > :12:03.

:12:03. > :12:11.I am joined by a special guest. This is the chair of sports

:12:11. > :12:16.Scotland. She is vice-chair of it organising committee for the 2014

:12:16. > :12:22.Commonwealth Games. Runners through the motions from earlier. I carried

:12:22. > :12:28.the torch and St Andrews. It was very moving. It was very emotional.

:12:28. > :12:35.Words cannot express what you feel inside. My legs are shaking even

:12:35. > :12:43.now. It is fantastic. You can see the reception. What kind of

:12:43. > :12:48.reception did you get and how did it make you feel? I certainly got a

:12:48. > :12:58.fantastic welcome. Everyone was out at seven -- 7 o'clock in the

:12:58. > :13:00.

:13:01. > :13:05.morning. What do you think this event can do for Scotland? We have

:13:05. > :13:13.got 24 athletes in the Olympic Games, 60 Natalie's qualified for

:13:13. > :13:23.the Paralympic Games. What they learn down there and bring back

:13:23. > :13:24.

:13:24. > :13:28.four Commonwealth Games in 2014, we are in a win-win situation.

:13:28. > :13:32.story has been about Scotland and the magnificent scenery, it has

:13:33. > :13:42.also been about some of the very special people chosen to carry the

:13:43. > :13:49.

:13:49. > :13:58.Nominated to carry the torch on the Isle of Lewis, was the lady who

:13:58. > :14:04.instigated their charity fun run. It was based on the Race For Life.

:14:04. > :14:10.We do not have a big enough population to justify a doing a

:14:10. > :14:18.real Race For Life. Kirsty one three Commonwealth gold medals and

:14:19. > :14:22.raced in two Olympics. It is a very different it experience. The

:14:22. > :14:30.Olympics is all about performance and you do not see the bigger

:14:30. > :14:40.picture of the enthusiasm it brings to a whole nation. For 0.20 in the

:14:40. > :14:44.morning. 20 years of a gap, Kirsty added to her Olympic experience.

:14:44. > :14:50.The closure of an Aberdeen workshops for blind and disabled

:14:50. > :14:57.people... Management will meet on Friday and a expected to begin

:14:58. > :15:03.widening the business... And a short space of time, the business

:15:03. > :15:12.was transformed. It is down to a global businessman. He freely gives

:15:13. > :15:19.his time and expertise. We had hard times and had to be closed down. We

:15:19. > :15:23.get lots of support from different periods. The following year, we

:15:23. > :15:30.were able to get a factory reopened Andrey employee all the disabled

:15:31. > :15:39.people who wanted their jobs back. I do not know what I had -- if I

:15:39. > :15:45.could have slept at night if we had not offered everyone a job. It is a

:15:46. > :15:54.great honour. It is a one-off opportunity and a privilege. I

:15:54. > :15:59.enjoy and relishing every single second of it. I hope that the

:15:59. > :16:07.journey the torch makes inspires people to take an interest in sport,

:16:07. > :16:11.to look at young athletes appearing and say, I can do that. If you look

:16:11. > :16:15.at those athletes, at some point in their youth, they were all

:16:15. > :16:25.similarly inspired by some person or some event. This is the kind of

:16:25. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:37.event that had -- could have that The Olympic flame is not too far

:16:37. > :16:43.away, there we can see the torch- bearers, thrilled to be part of

:16:43. > :16:49.this wonderful pageant. Louise Martin, you know exactly what it

:16:49. > :16:58.feels like to carry that flame, don't you? It just brings it all

:16:58. > :17:02.back after this morning. Once you get the flame it is so moving. But

:17:02. > :17:07.it is their enthusiasm of their public, wanting to touch it and

:17:07. > :17:11.stroke it which is so moving. Tens of thousands of people are

:17:11. > :17:15.lining the streets of Edinburgh, and elsewhere in Scotland, all

:17:15. > :17:21.Scotland has come out to support this. This is what I expected from

:17:21. > :17:30.Scotland. Everybody said, perhaps we will not get too many, but they

:17:30. > :17:38.have done us proud. Superb, absolutely terrific.

:17:38. > :17:48.To give you any idea of roughly where we are, that is a bird's eye

:17:48. > :17:54.view. We are entering the final leg of the torch. The carrier Lesley

:17:54. > :17:59.Forrest walk make her way into their Esplanade. We have seen

:17:59. > :18:04.tremendous scenes of enthusiasm. If you were a young athlete preparing

:18:04. > :18:14.for the gains itself, what difference would this make to you?

:18:14. > :18:22.

:18:22. > :18:29.-- for the Olympic Games. This is phenomenal -- phenomenal.

:18:29. > :18:33.You can only run well under this circumstance. This is Olympic gold

:18:33. > :18:41.amiss here. What is it about the Olympics,

:18:41. > :18:49.because since you're Kate -- since you days, not so long will call, --

:18:49. > :18:57.not so long ago... Descend is dreadful. The Olympics still have

:18:57. > :19:02.that very special sort of magic. Why is it so special? For the

:19:02. > :19:07.Olympics is an iconic event, it is a once-in-a-lifetime in this

:19:08. > :19:14.country, and anybody that gets a chance to do this is honoured. They

:19:14. > :19:19.can only go for a word and excel themselves in this atmosphere, it

:19:19. > :19:25.is just incredible. What we are seeing at the moment is

:19:25. > :19:35.Lesley Forrest at making her way up the cobbled streets. She is doing

:19:35. > :19:36.

:19:36. > :19:41.the final leg four hours of this last part of their the torch

:19:41. > :19:49.journey. You had no idea that the television

:19:49. > :19:55.cameras were actually capturing her very vocal support. I had never

:19:55. > :20:02.seen Margot screening as badly as that. I think that it was emotional,

:20:02. > :20:12.she was very emotional about the event. I was enjoying myself, but

:20:12. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :20:18.she was suffering the pressure of somebody that felt, and was trying

:20:18. > :20:22.to do for me what I was trying to feel and do. It was very sad in a

:20:22. > :20:27.way that she had to take a lot more pressure than I understood.

:20:27. > :20:34.A but that was during the golden era for Scottish athletics. I know

:20:34. > :20:41.you are still a little bit involved. What is the situation? To be have

:20:41. > :20:47.any hope so up and coming two there is always hope. Scottish athletics

:20:47. > :20:53.are supporting afflicts in every way that they can. -- supporting

:20:53. > :20:56.athletes. I am involved in a very small way, that any help that I can

:20:56. > :21:02.give is obviously for the better. Scottish athletics are doing

:21:02. > :21:07.everything that they can at the moment. With this sort of support,

:21:07. > :21:13.moving towards London 2012, how much of a spur will this be for

:21:13. > :21:18.athletes for 2014? I think this is a stepping stone, for Glasgow, this

:21:18. > :21:25.will get everybody into a good frame of mind for Glasgow. It can

:21:25. > :21:29.only be successful in Glasgow. But the public will be looking at six s

:21:29. > :21:34.in medals. And of course, homes are poor it

:21:34. > :21:39.always makes a difference -- home supporter always makes the

:21:39. > :21:46.difference. When I was wearing a British vest there was also win the

:21:46. > :21:51.Scottish best, I was very proud to wear the British vest and having

:21:51. > :22:00.support like this, in the situation in London, and then two years later

:22:00. > :22:08.in Glasgow, my voice has gone... But it is unbelievable. The song

:22:08. > :22:13.has ended and the torch is nearing us. What can you see? I can see

:22:13. > :22:18.that tens of thousands of people here on Esplanade. I can also see

:22:18. > :22:24.54-year-old Lesley Forrest from Edinburgh. What an honour for her.

:22:24. > :22:28.She will get to light the Olympic cauldron here in the historic

:22:28. > :22:31.centre of historic old Edinburgh. She will, and they Esplanade very

:22:31. > :22:37.sharply and is just milking the applause from the tens of thousands

:22:37. > :22:43.of people who have been lining the streets outside Edinburgh Castle,

:22:43. > :22:47.right across Edinburgh, and beyond. We have seen these scenes of

:22:47. > :22:51.support repeated right across the country. Hundreds of thousands of

:22:51. > :22:57.Scots have cured the Olympic flame along its way across the last six

:22:57. > :23:06.days -- have cheered. We're building up to a crescendo here at

:23:06. > :23:12.Edinburgh Castle. That is building, what a reception. It will be a very

:23:12. > :23:19.emotional thing for her. She will enjoy every single minute of it.

:23:19. > :23:23.She will enjoy this, this is really special. Can you pick your finger

:23:23. > :23:31.on just why this has captured the imagination of the Scottish people,

:23:31. > :23:34.because we did wonder if Scotland would buy into the Olympics.

:23:34. > :23:42.media have been fantastic, they have got behind the whole thing and

:23:42. > :23:46.we have really sold it, but it is word of mouth as well. People do

:23:46. > :23:51.not understand that it is the flame that moves on, we keep the torch is

:23:51. > :23:55.here, and that has been overwhelming. And I suppose it is

:23:55. > :24:00.how we keep this momentum going, how we build on this. It will be

:24:00. > :24:04.fascinating to see how Scotland becomes more involved as we get

:24:04. > :24:08.towards the Olympics and the Olympic football at Hampden.

:24:08. > :24:17.think what we see you tonight, I would not be surprised if we see

:24:17. > :24:27.the hand and tickets going in the next few days. -- the hand and

:24:27. > :24:29.

:24:30. > :24:39.tickets. She is getting ever closer, Lesley Forrest, she is the 608

:24:39. > :24:45.Scottish torch-bearer. It has travelled through 97 Scottish

:24:45. > :24:52.communities, and Lesley Forrest, who had a kidney transplant, and is

:24:52. > :24:56.now there are multiple British and world transplant Games medallist,

:24:56. > :25:06.is approaching their Esplanade. She is loving every moment, and no

:25:06. > :25:07.

:25:07. > :25:14.wonder. You could almost be in tears for this, it is so exciting.

:25:14. > :25:17.That is absolutely tremendous. There is a tear welling in her eye,

:25:17. > :25:21.just why are you so emotional? means so much to have all the

:25:21. > :25:24.people here and everybody in Scotland backing this. We had the

:25:25. > :25:31.support for our athletes as the going to the Olympics in London and

:25:31. > :25:39.they can only do their best. This will be fantastic for us. You can

:25:39. > :25:49.hear the reception from 10,000 people here. They famous Olympic

:25:49. > :25:50.

:25:50. > :25:56.flame, that was let it from Olympia in Greece, makes its way towards

:25:56. > :26:03.the stage here at Edinburgh Castle. An embrace for Lesley Forrest, who

:26:03. > :26:07.cannot quite believe what she is doing. She is a little piece of

:26:07. > :26:17.Scottish history. But she comes the last few final steps, towards the

:26:17. > :26:22.

:26:22. > :26:27.Olympic cauldron. Lesley Forrest is R'n'B. She has been awarded an --.

:26:27. > :26:37.She is about to light the Olympic Cauldon, here at the historic

:26:37. > :27:12.

:27:12. > :27:15.Lesley Forrest, what a moment! I spoke un dues said that you would

:27:15. > :27:19.enjoy this moment and take your time, and he certainly did. What

:27:19. > :27:23.was going through your mind? I was overwhelmed by the number of people

:27:23. > :27:28.here, it is very exciting and I think the whole of Edinburgh has

:27:28. > :27:33.turned out today. It has been amazing from Broxburn right the way

:27:33. > :27:38.through. The last few hundred yards when a bit lonely, you came through

:27:38. > :27:44.the tunnel and he had no idea that this awaited you. It was a bit of a

:27:44. > :27:51.surprise, it was like arriving at a surprise party. And what a party!

:27:51. > :27:59.What you do to keep fit? I go swimming and the athletics and do a

:27:59. > :28:04.bit of soon does sometimes. This is a particularly sweet moment for do.

:28:04. > :28:09.Tell us your story. I never thought that I would be in this position. I

:28:09. > :28:15.had a kidney transplant in 1996 and through the love of somebody else,

:28:15. > :28:20.they actually gave me a second chance of life, and I just try to

:28:20. > :28:28.fill every day. I compete at the British transplant Games and the

:28:28. > :28:32.World transplant Games. And so, I would just like to say, a special

:28:33. > :28:37.mention to all those people who carry donor cards and to those

:28:37. > :28:44.donor families out there, because I would just not be here on without

:28:44. > :28:54.them. You are certainly a credit to them. Let us hear it one more time

:28:54. > :29:03.

:29:03. > :29:09.for our final torch carrier who has Fantastic scenes at Edinburgh

:29:09. > :29:15.Castle. What you make of that? was unbelievable. She deserves

:29:15. > :29:20.everything she got today. For her to stand up there like that after

:29:20. > :29:30.coming in with all those people there, I take my hat off to her.

:29:30. > :29:32.

:29:32. > :29:40.Wonderful scenes here. The Olympic flame brazen -- burns brightly. 44

:29:40. > :29:45.days until that flame is lit on the Olympic stadium in London. How do

:29:45. > :29:52.you see the next few weeks panning out in terms of Scottish engagement

:29:52. > :29:56.and in terms of the Commonwealth Games? One of the things we're

:29:56. > :30:05.doing is that a lot of our people are going down to London on an

:30:05. > :30:09.observer programme to learn. One of the things we will get for our

:30:09. > :30:13.athletes, we will have a lot more athletes being selected between now

:30:13. > :30:22.and the games. Our support staff are starting to work with them and

:30:22. > :30:31.they will be able to come back and do a lot more. We keep saying that

:30:31. > :30:39.London is our test event for Glasgow. You have kept your cards

:30:39. > :30:43.close to your chest. Is there anyone who has carried that torch

:30:43. > :30:49.who has come out to see the Olympic flame, what will they take away

:30:49. > :30:53.from the experience? They will take pride in being part of an -- of

:30:53. > :30:59.fantastic experience. Some of them may have touched it, carried it,
