:01:24. > :01:28.Hello, good evening. Just take a look at this. Tens of thousands of
:01:28. > :01:33.people have turned out here in the 5th -- in the City of Sheffield to
:01:33. > :01:36.welcome the spirit of the Olympics, the Olympic flame, into the heart
:01:36. > :01:41.of the city of sport. It will light the cauldron on the stage behind me
:01:41. > :01:51.and then delighted to say I'm joined by the former England
:01:51. > :01:55.cricket captain Michael Vaughan. What an atmosphere. I have got a
:01:55. > :02:03.funny feeling that Sheffield had turned out to see one man tonight,
:02:03. > :02:09.Lord Coe. He got two at Caldbeck -- gold medals in Moscow in 1980. He
:02:09. > :02:12.will get a huge ovation tonight. Yes, Lord Coe will be running
:02:12. > :02:19.through the same streets of Sheffield as he did as a young lad
:02:19. > :02:22.when he was trading almost 40 years ago. -- training. Will also be
:02:22. > :02:27.introducing you to some about Olympians who are going for gold,
:02:27. > :02:33.and also some of the torch-bearers. This must have been an incredible
:02:33. > :02:37.day. Absolutely. To think they are running through the streets with
:02:37. > :02:42.tens of thousands of people, it is a day they will not forget. I can
:02:42. > :02:52.tell you now that know where was the Torch welcomed more warmly than
:02:52. > :02:59.
:02:59. > :03:03.in Barnsley. -- know where. -- nowhere. What a night it is going
:03:03. > :03:12.to be in Sheffield. We're going to be meeting some of the torch-
:03:12. > :03:18.bearers here. Today's journey has taken the Torch 8,000 miles. It is
:03:18. > :03:28.going to be hearing 20 minutes' time. We have been meeting some of
:03:28. > :03:29.
:03:29. > :03:34.those for whom today is a golden There aren't many women with the
:03:34. > :03:38.stadium named after them, but Dorothy is one of them. She is a
:03:38. > :03:46.champion sprinter. A bit rusty these days, but in the 60s, the
:03:46. > :03:50.miner's daughter from Barnsley won three Olympic medals. I was so
:03:50. > :03:54.nervous. I used to think, what am I doing here? Why do I put myself
:03:54. > :04:01.through it? But as soon as you run through that tape, that is why you
:04:01. > :04:11.do it. It's like going back to 1960 when I came back from the Olympic
:04:11. > :04:13.
:04:13. > :04:23.Games. Really amazing. I knew the Barnsley people would turn out in
:04:23. > :04:25.
:04:25. > :04:31.force, they are brilliant. Are you crying? Es! -- yes! A single bullet
:04:31. > :04:38.fired by end Iraqi insurgent changed this man's life for ever.
:04:38. > :04:43.It destroyed one I it and reduced his other socket to dust. 100 hours
:04:43. > :04:53.of surgery has saved 10 % of his visit in one of his eyes. All you
:04:53. > :04:54.
:04:54. > :04:58.can think of is doom and gloom. To put a more positive spin on life, I
:04:58. > :05:01.embrace what has happened to me and I'm probably better person for what
:05:01. > :05:11.has happened and have achieved much more than I possibly could have a
:05:11. > :05:13.
:05:13. > :05:23.if it hadn't happened. Amazing, amazing. Tonight, I won't be able
:05:23. > :05:24.
:05:24. > :05:28.Harry is in almost constant pain, they would never know it. An award-
:05:28. > :05:32.winning scout, he has a disorder so where he is it the it -- the only
:05:32. > :05:37.person in the world with that particular strain. His bones are
:05:37. > :05:42.ageing much faster than they should, giving him arthritis. But it is
:05:42. > :05:45.others he fundraisers for and the torches bothered about. It is a big
:05:45. > :05:50.opportunity, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not everyone can get
:05:50. > :06:00.to do it. It is an amazing feeling to be a part of it. Do you have any
:06:00. > :06:01.
:06:01. > :06:09.It is just an amazing feeling and you have got to make the best of it
:06:09. > :06:18.-- the best of it. People don't care what you are, who are, they
:06:18. > :06:22.are so friendly. The atmosphere really building here. That is the
:06:22. > :06:29.view from the BBC helicopter. Those are the thousands of people waiting
:06:29. > :06:34.expectantly. Michael, you have some wonderful torch-bearer its? I do.
:06:34. > :06:39.How was the atmosphere today? was just brilliant. It is like
:06:39. > :06:45.nobody knows you but they are so friendly and helpful in every
:06:45. > :06:49.single way you can imagine. What was the best bet? It was when you
:06:49. > :06:54.get the Torch handed to you and you get to hand it over to the next
:06:54. > :07:01.person. Where are you going to keep the Torch? In my room, but I am
:07:01. > :07:06.having a battle with my mum. must be so proud? Yes, everyone had
:07:06. > :07:11.T-shirts on today. I want to say thank you to everybody had turned
:07:11. > :07:21.out to cheer him on. And Simon, how was it for you today? Absolutely
:07:21. > :07:22.
:07:22. > :07:26.amazing. A special day was made very special. You must be amazed by
:07:26. > :07:36.the response of people? Absolutely. This is just absolutely
:07:36. > :07:37.
:07:37. > :07:42.unbelievable. He must have been very emotional for you? Yes, every
:07:42. > :07:49.emotion you can think of it went right through me. The crowd
:07:49. > :07:55.certainly came out. No more so than here. Tom Ingall is live in the
:07:55. > :07:59.helicopter for us. Tom, it is incredible! I'm having a real boys'
:07:59. > :08:02.adventure in the skies. We have been tracking the taught all the
:08:02. > :08:08.way from Hillsborough. The helicopter crew tell me they're the
:08:08. > :08:14.best crowds they have seen on the journey so far. Looking at a
:08:14. > :08:24.monitors, the Torch is just leaving S Street and it making its way onto
:08:24. > :08:31.Norfolk Street and Surrey Street and into the city centre. You have
:08:31. > :08:35.got Lord Coe, a champion of bringing the Olympics to London in
:08:35. > :08:39.2012, and two teenage girls, champions of sport, helping young
:08:39. > :08:42.people in their area get involved in sport today. You have got the
:08:42. > :08:47.past, present and future or celebrated in the space of about
:08:47. > :08:51.500 metres. What a terrific example of the Olympic spirit here in
:08:51. > :08:57.Sheffield. It is a great view from up here, but I bet the party on the
:08:57. > :09:05.floor is much better. I can't believe these scenes. Absolutely
:09:05. > :09:11.incredible. A lot of those people we have seen there are waiting to
:09:11. > :09:15.see Lord Coe. Yes, I remember in 2005 when the announcement was made
:09:15. > :09:20.in Singapore that London will be getting be the Olympics, Seb Coe
:09:20. > :09:30.was in the background. Many pictures of David Beckham and other
:09:30. > :09:33.
:09:33. > :09:38.legends, but Seb Coe is Mr One of the things that marked him
:09:38. > :09:43.out was the length of his legs. He was only about 5 ft 9 but he had
:09:43. > :09:47.legs like me and I'm six foot two. We had some very good runners and
:09:47. > :09:50.some of them got to a higher standard, county level, and some of
:09:50. > :10:00.them were internationals in their own right. But he was so far ahead
:10:00. > :10:01.
:10:01. > :10:05.of the rest of us. I used to train -- he used to train very
:10:05. > :10:11.methodically. The skinny lad from Sheffield was indeed something
:10:11. > :10:21.special. In 1980 he went to Moscow and Los the 800 metres, his best
:10:21. > :10:23.
:10:23. > :10:29.event. But he got his revenge in the 1,500. -- lost. It was a title
:10:29. > :10:36.he defended against the odds four years later. Athletics and politics
:10:36. > :10:46.beckoned, and he was the perfect man to lead Britain's Olympic bid.
:10:46. > :10:47.
:10:47. > :10:51.The Games in 2012 are awarded to the City of London. If you want
:10:51. > :10:59.people to follow you in sport, you need people who go, right, I get
:10:59. > :11:02.that, I get his passion. Making Seb Coe lead the bid it was a big move.
:11:02. > :11:06.He doesn't know much about putting bricks and mortar together but what
:11:06. > :11:10.he needs to do it is take people with him. It was absolutely the
:11:10. > :11:20.right thing to have him lead us through to what is going to be a
:11:20. > :11:28.
:11:28. > :11:33.And we will see the moment in just a few seconds when Lord Coe is
:11:33. > :11:39.actually handed that Torch. He is going to be handed it by a man who
:11:39. > :11:44.represented Great Britain in 1948. He actually has the Torch now. We
:11:44. > :11:48.are going to be able to go and see him in just a moment. Absolutely
:11:48. > :11:54.incredible. We see their Seb Coe running through the streets of
:11:54. > :11:59.Sheffield with the Torch. What an amazing moment. It really is. I'm
:11:59. > :12:06.just looking back to the clipper pm in their shorts, I don't think
:12:06. > :12:12.there around any more -- the clip of him. When he is winning his gold
:12:12. > :12:17.medals, those silver medals, look at the people trying to get close
:12:18. > :12:23.to him. He has done a tremendous job of delivering the game's to
:12:23. > :12:27.London. Absolutely incredible. We will hear more from Lord Coe on the
:12:27. > :12:31.stage. But there is another Olympian that Sheffield has taken
:12:31. > :12:41.to their hearts, she is a Sheffield's golden girl. You
:12:41. > :12:52.
:12:52. > :12:58.In Barnsley, we are next to Yorkshire County, it is nice and
:12:58. > :13:06.low-key. We can get some throwing done before we start. We're off to
:13:06. > :13:10.Manchester and Austria after that. When I started, when I was 11
:13:10. > :13:17.fritter now, I have come back to do the Yorkshire championships. It is
:13:17. > :13:27.nice to mix that with other events. They are still great event and
:13:27. > :13:31.
:13:32. > :13:37.there are a lot of good kids who The shot is still ahead of the hip,
:13:37. > :13:47.it's better but it hasn't quite got a bite on it. I think I just need
:13:47. > :13:58.
:13:58. > :14:08.to stay back over. She is in shock but detention! -- shotput. Unlike
:14:08. > :14:13.
:14:13. > :14:21.It is a bit windy, but if you do what you did the other day, it will
:14:21. > :14:26.be fine. Nearly blew the javelin away from her and into her head. It
:14:26. > :14:34.is a challenge, but this is why she's doing this competition. But
:14:34. > :14:41.long way away from the Olympic Stadium, but very useful. Something
:14:41. > :14:45.was missing today. But I'm still happy with the way it's going. I'm
:14:45. > :14:55.hoping I'll savour good throw for it a few weeks' time. -- save a
:14:55. > :15:04.
:15:04. > :15:11.There we are, the moment when Seb Coe, he has done his bit. He handed
:15:11. > :15:14.over to a young hopeful, a young girl, Bridie Hamilton, aged just 17.
:15:14. > :15:22.She has inspired other people to take part in grassroots sport. That
:15:22. > :15:28.is just fantastic. Seb Coe certainly inspired me. I wanted to
:15:28. > :15:32.be him, I had similar legs, nice and then. I just wasn't fast enough.
:15:32. > :15:35.But he did inspire so many people in Sheffield. And that is what the
:15:35. > :15:41.Olympics is all about. The legacy that it will lead in a few years'
:15:41. > :15:46.time. We will want to be the likes of Seb Coe from the 80s.
:15:46. > :15:55.already people want to be Jessica Ennis. And we have her coach right
:15:55. > :15:59.here. We do. Toni Minichiello, good evening. How is Jessica Ennis
:15:59. > :16:03.dealing with the pressure? She is doing really well. It's just about
:16:03. > :16:08.turning up to training every day and getting the work done. For just
:16:08. > :16:17.a care, there is 40 days to go cut so we have about 30 days of
:16:17. > :16:22.training left. She was having problems with the long jump? I will
:16:22. > :16:28.check. Maybe she will even check to make sure. You said 40 days, what
:16:28. > :16:32.happens between now and then? just training. Will get the
:16:32. > :16:40.training down and then in late July will go off to a holding camp where
:16:40. > :16:47.all the British athletes are going. Jessica, all the best. Absolutely.
:16:47. > :16:50.I wonder how she will fail when she -- I wonder how she will feel. Look
:16:50. > :16:56.at that. Young Bridie Hamilton carrying the Torch through
:16:56. > :17:06.Sheffield. It is like the Jubilee, as well. I wonder what it is like
:17:06. > :17:07.
:17:07. > :17:13.by the stage. Someone who can tell The people have been here since
:17:13. > :17:18.2:00pm this afternoon. The flags are definitely flying. You are
:17:18. > :17:26.looking very patriotic. It is great for Britain and Yorkshire,
:17:26. > :17:33.supporting Team GB! I have tickets for London 2012 it. I am proud to
:17:33. > :17:38.be British. We have met before, haven't we? Yes, this has been the
:17:38. > :17:42.fourth time. I have followed the Torch from Pickering down to
:17:42. > :17:48.Sheffield. There is a great sense of community and history. Some
:17:48. > :17:55.people are going to be working at the Games. Lots of students here
:17:55. > :18:01.from Sheffield Hallam University. will be working at the stadium, and
:18:01. > :18:07.talking to the athletes. I am really excited. How exciting. We
:18:07. > :18:13.have got the flags, the crowds and the atmosphere. All we need now is
:18:13. > :18:17.a real Olympic Torch. We are going to see the moment when
:18:17. > :18:24.young Carys Hall like the cauldron, but there is a young lady I would
:18:24. > :18:31.like you to meet. She is going to go for gold. Nicola Adams, and a
:18:31. > :18:38.boxer, first time in the Olympics. Yes, I am really excited and
:18:38. > :18:44.looking forward to it. You have come straight from training. How
:18:44. > :18:50.our preparations going? Really well. Technique is going great. I could
:18:50. > :18:54.not ask for a better preparation. When you see this amount of people
:18:55. > :19:00.turning out for the Torch, what will it be like for the real thing?
:19:00. > :19:06.It will be massive. It looks really exciting out there now. It is
:19:06. > :19:13.really nice, it is good to see. Does it give you that extra boost?
:19:13. > :19:23.Yes, I do not feel any nurse at all. Art and soul happy to be a part of
:19:23. > :19:29.everything going on. I am so happy. A lot of people, said, women's
:19:29. > :19:37.boxing. But you proved them wrong. It is going well? Yes, it is going
:19:37. > :19:42.really well. You have a fierce right hander! You are going to get
:19:43. > :19:50.in gold medal! Nicola, you are going for gold.
:19:50. > :19:56.Nothing less will do. Definitely. I would love to bring a gold medal
:19:56. > :20:01.back to Leeds. How exciting would that be? I have such a good feeling.
:20:01. > :20:09.You will come on Look North and we will celebrate ordure achievements.
:20:09. > :20:18.Met a stern our attention to the stage. -- let us turn our Mac
:20:18. > :20:24.attention. -- let us turn our attention. The City is absolutely
:20:24. > :20:30.buzzing. Welcome to viewers from the News Channel, for that big
:20:30. > :20:36.moment. What a moment for the young girl. So there are thousands of
:20:36. > :20:42.people here to watch it, and she has been inspired by sports. She
:20:42. > :20:47.umpires, and she has improved her studies because of it. She is
:20:47. > :20:54.studying harder and getting better grades. That is what it is all
:20:54. > :20:59.about - the unsung heroes. We have met the champions, the champions of
:20:59. > :21:05.old like Lord Coe, but these people like Harry, Simon, they will never
:21:05. > :21:10.forget it. Yes, and I think the old Olympians, to bring back all the
:21:10. > :21:14.old memories, it is wonderful for them, but for the Torch bearers, it
:21:14. > :21:20.is a moment they will never forget. But where are you going to put the
:21:20. > :21:30.Torch? I could think of lots of places it would be incredible. He
:21:30. > :21:30.
:21:30. > :21:36.is Karras now making her way to the stage. -- Carys Hall. Here she is
:21:36. > :21:40.going to be welcomed by the crowd. Let us enjoy the moment, as she
:21:41. > :21:50.moves towards the stage. She will be running to the most famous piece
:21:51. > :21:56.
:21:56. > :22:06.of running music there ever was. Wonderful. Fantastic turnout.
:22:06. > :22:06.
:22:06. > :23:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 58 seconds
:23:05. > :23:15.Raise the flame! Let us count her down. 5, 4, 3, two
:23:15. > :23:35.
:23:35. > :23:45.1! Like the cold and! -- like to Let us welcome onto the stage, to
:23:45. > :23:48.
:23:48. > :23:55.be faster from BBC Sheffield. Now live on BBC One. -- Toby Foster.
:23:55. > :24:00.I think I am on fire. What has it been like? A amazing. The whole
:24:00. > :24:05.journey, to see the crowd packed out here, one street was so narrow
:24:05. > :24:09.but people had just come out to see it. Look at the crowd now. Did you
:24:09. > :24:19.ever think you would see this? Never in my lifetime, I cannot even
:24:19. > :24:21.
:24:21. > :24:26.see the end of the crowd! Give her a big Sheffield cheer!
:24:26. > :24:36.We now welcome to the stage, one of the driving forces behind London
:24:36. > :24:38.
:24:38. > :24:48.2012, please welcome lord Kohl to the stage. -- lord Kohl.
:24:48. > :24:49.
:24:49. > :24:56.It doesn't get any better. There is no where else I would rather be
:24:56. > :25:02.than here at this moment. What have the crowds been back? Unbelievable.
:25:02. > :25:08.20, 30, 40 deep, hanging out of windows... Did you ever think of
:25:08. > :25:13.when you started this journey that the Torch would bring this kind of
:25:13. > :25:18.enthusiasm? To be honest I did. Because we just get support in this
:25:18. > :25:23.country. This is where all my athletics career took place, in
:25:23. > :25:33.this city. I am hardly surprised that people would turn up.
:25:33. > :25:34.
:25:34. > :25:41.started in Hallam. The Harriers, and all my coach is, my mum and
:25:41. > :25:48.dad... This is in big moment. Jessica Ennis walked in as a nine
:25:48. > :25:54.year-old. What is your message for the kids today? This city does
:25:54. > :25:59.throw up people in sport. Be a part of it. There is no better city on
:25:59. > :26:05.this planet to be brought up for sport. Communities get it, sport is
:26:05. > :26:10.understood by people. Join your local clubs. Have we was talking
:26:10. > :26:14.about the benefits of the Olympics coming to London. How can cities
:26:14. > :26:19.like Sheffield benefit from what is going on? Sheffield said the whole
:26:19. > :26:23.tone and style about using sport in the City. We had the World Student
:26:23. > :26:27.Games here, which left a huge legacy of fantastic sporting
:26:27. > :26:33.facilities. People come here to train, and overseas countries
:26:33. > :26:37.competing, and preparing in our training camps. So Sheffield is a
:26:37. > :26:47.fantastic city to be promoting the other big values for all stop let
:26:47. > :26:47.
:26:47. > :26:52.us have a big Sheffield cheer for Sebastian Coe!
:26:52. > :26:57.And a massive cheer for your torchbearer!
:26:57. > :27:01.That was a round of applause that man deserves. He has been an
:27:02. > :27:09.inspiration for many years, he brought the Olympics to London. He
:27:09. > :27:13.might move back up north afterwards. He did say that he might move back
:27:13. > :27:20.and get a bit of land and try to chill out. I can imagine the last
:27:20. > :27:24.few years have been a bit hectic. The reception that he has received
:27:24. > :27:29.today will remind him of the warmth of Yorkshire and the reason why he
:27:29. > :27:38.started running on the streets so long ago. But here is the lady of
:27:38. > :27:47.the moment. What do you think of what you have just seen? Amazing. I
:27:47. > :27:51.cannot believe the crowd. It is great. Tony, a winner Jessica is a
:27:51. > :28:01.little superstitious. She will not go into that Olympic Stadium. Will
:28:01. > :28:04.she be watching tonight? Definitely. She is at home watching tonight.
