0:00:01 > 0:00:06The Olympics are are under way. 12 gold medals have already been won.

0:00:06 > 0:00:16Over the next 90 minutes, we will have the best of the action. London

0:00:16 > 0:00:18

0:00:18 > 0:00:282012 is under way, this is Olympics Tonight.

0:00:28 > 0:00:28

0:00:28 > 0:01:08Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds

0:01:08 > 0:01:15The Games are awarded to the city The Olympic flame burns brightly,

0:01:15 > 0:01:22the Games are well under way. What an amazing image that is. Across

0:01:22 > 0:01:28London, it is a hive of activity, with live sport still being played.

0:01:28 > 0:01:36Competition began at 8:15am this morning. On the BBC, you can see

0:01:36 > 0:01:44every event. It is all available to watch online via the BBC website.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49So, at just after 10:30pm, what do we have left? Well, right now, the

0:01:49 > 0:01:57British women are in action against Australia in the basketball. Boxing

0:01:57 > 0:02:04is on at the ExCel Arena. And at Earls court, the volleyball is

0:02:05 > 0:02:08going on. And this is the image at Horse Guards Parade, where the

0:02:08 > 0:02:14beach volleyball is live, and we will be going there later in the

0:02:14 > 0:02:19show. And this is the Olympic Park, our home for the whole of the 16

0:02:19 > 0:02:25days. And here on Olympics Tonight, we will be on air every night until

0:02:25 > 0:02:30midnight. We will be reviewing all the day's big stories. Each night

0:02:30 > 0:02:35we will be joined by medalists, as they celebrate success, and also by

0:02:35 > 0:02:45some of the biggest names in sport. Tonight, it is a real pleasure to

0:02:45 > 0:03:09

0:03:09 > 0:03:13be in the company of three sporting Yes, four-time Olympic winner

0:03:13 > 0:03:22Michael Johnson, double winner Dame Kelly Holmes, and tennis champion

0:03:22 > 0:03:30John McEnroe. If tennis had gold medals, I think you would have nine.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34First impressions, I guess, from the last 24 hours, Michael? It was

0:03:34 > 0:03:39a fantastic Opening Ceremony, London did a great job of putting

0:03:39 > 0:03:43its own stamp on the ceremony. The first thing people say is, how are

0:03:43 > 0:03:48you going to try to top Beijing? It is important that they did not try

0:03:48 > 0:03:52to do that. At times, I was a little lost, and I was concerned

0:03:52 > 0:03:58that some of the viewers who are not British might have been a bit

0:03:58 > 0:04:05lost. Time to guide them towards a history book! Yes! But there were

0:04:05 > 0:04:10some fantastic moments. I think what most people will remember is

0:04:10 > 0:04:16the lighting of the cauldron - that was fantastic. 1992 was the best

0:04:16 > 0:04:22one I saw, with the archer, with the arrow. When that happened, it

0:04:22 > 0:04:26was amazing. It was a similar moment last night. Is there

0:04:26 > 0:04:33anything from today, the first day of sport, which has captured your

0:04:33 > 0:04:37imagination? Taverner... Without giving away any results...! From a

0:04:37 > 0:04:44British perspective, I think when you look at the road cycling, the

0:04:44 > 0:04:50crowds were brilliant. It is difficult to measure, but

0:04:50 > 0:04:56apparently, that road cycling is the most watched Olympic event ever.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00To me, it is total chaos. Over woke up this morning and turned on the

0:05:01 > 0:05:05BBC, there is so much to turn to, I do not know what to do with myself.

0:05:05 > 0:05:11I am used to covering the tennis, and now I have got about 50

0:05:11 > 0:05:15different options. This is my first Olympics, so I am very excited. It

0:05:16 > 0:05:25is going to take a couple of days to figure it all out. We will go

0:05:26 > 0:05:29

0:05:29 > 0:05:39easy on you! I think the audience wants to know what channel the BBC

0:05:39 > 0:05:39

0:05:39 > 0:05:47is on! Thanks for the moment, guys. There's lots in store on the

0:05:47 > 0:05:52programme tonight. Here's what's coming up... In a moment, Mark

0:05:52 > 0:05:58Cavendish, six days after crossing the line first on the Champs-

0:05:58 > 0:06:05Elysees, goes looking for gold on the streets of London. We're live

0:06:05 > 0:06:08at Horse Guards Parade for the beach volleyball. The most

0:06:08 > 0:06:13successful gold-medallist in Olympic history, Michael Phelps,

0:06:13 > 0:06:19will be going in the swimming pool. And we have got the best of the

0:06:19 > 0:06:26rest of the superb sport from the opening day, including boxing, and

0:06:26 > 0:06:31a few other surprises along the way. But let's begin with that cycling,

0:06:31 > 0:06:36the men's road race. Mark Cavendish, straight from the Tour de France,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39was targeting another great achievement. The Sports Personality

0:06:39 > 0:06:43of the Year was the hot favourite, and he had the weight of

0:06:43 > 0:06:49expectation upon him. But the Olympics it is all about taking

0:06:49 > 0:06:53that one chance. Could he do it? Matthew Pinsent has the story.

0:06:53 > 0:06:59Turning up at a hugely unpredictable event, and with just

0:06:59 > 0:07:07one card to play - is it really wise? Well, it depends on the card.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10And here it is. Mark Cavendish, surrounded by four huge engines.

0:07:10 > 0:07:20Those include two stage winners from the Tour de France, and the

0:07:20 > 0:07:22

0:07:22 > 0:07:25winner of the Yellow Jersey. Go well, gents. One French newspaper

0:07:25 > 0:07:33called Mark Cavendish the greatest sprinter in the history of the Tour

0:07:34 > 0:07:38de France. He returned from Beijing the only member of the team not to

0:07:38 > 0:07:44win a medal. Since then, he has become king of the road. The

0:07:44 > 0:07:49tactics are quite simple - protect Mark Cavendish from nine climes of

0:07:49 > 0:07:53Box Hill, chased down every break away for six and was, and then it

0:07:53 > 0:08:03if Cavendish is in contention as they come up here, then he will be

0:08:03 > 0:08:05

0:08:05 > 0:08:10a very hard man to beat. Three, two, one... So, the British

0:08:10 > 0:08:17team led off the start. They might have even jumped the start. But to

0:08:17 > 0:08:21be honest, stealing a march on your opponents might be part of the plan.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25HUGH PORTER: We have got a bit of an attack on here. You can always

0:08:25 > 0:08:30an attack on here. You can always tell, out of the saddle. This group

0:08:30 > 0:08:33at the moment have established a slight advantage.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38CHRIS BOARDMAN: A lot of conversation going on between the

0:08:38 > 0:08:43British team, trying to decide on tactics. They have said for some

0:08:43 > 0:08:47time now that it is all-or-nothing for Mark Cavendish. The attacks

0:08:47 > 0:08:52came early, as expected, so the British quartet were hard at work

0:08:52 > 0:08:57immediately. The Obviously, they are people that have been together

0:08:57 > 0:09:03for a long term, they have known each other. A lot of them ride on

0:09:03 > 0:09:07the same team commercially anyway. But, yes, they are together, they

0:09:07 > 0:09:12know what they have got to do. You have got some of the best bike

0:09:12 > 0:09:20riders in the world, and they know riders in the world, and they know

0:09:20 > 0:09:23what they have got to do. I started racing at 12, and although I do not

0:09:23 > 0:09:27ride any more, apart from social riding, it is brilliant to be here

0:09:27 > 0:09:32today, absolutely fantastic. We are in foreign exciting finish. Fingers

0:09:32 > 0:09:42crossed, the boy will win. But if he doesn't, he is still magnificent,

0:09:42 > 0:09:43

0:09:43 > 0:09:46HUGH PORTER: this is the Pillaton, which is being led by Chris Froome.

0:09:46 > 0:09:54They are trailing a leading group which is now almost six minutes

0:09:55 > 0:09:59ahead. Italy are having a crack at the front. They are putting the

0:09:59 > 0:10:03rest under pressure. There is a real chase on now. Great Britain

0:10:03 > 0:10:07are applying the pressure, to try to limit the Games of that group

0:10:07 > 0:10:13which has given the peloton the slip. The whole thing has been

0:10:13 > 0:10:18condensed into the space of two minutes. It really is an impressive

0:10:18 > 0:10:21thing, to have just four guys controlling the peloton. If they

0:10:22 > 0:10:26can pull this off, it will be one of the most extraordinary things I

0:10:26 > 0:10:36have seen in sport. But those early attacks were beginning to take

0:10:36 > 0:10:37

0:10:37 > 0:10:41their toll. The gap was not closing. We have got about 24 miles of

0:10:41 > 0:10:45racing left, that is less than an hour before we are crowning the

0:10:45 > 0:10:50Olympic gold-medallist in London. Bradley Wiggins at the front, he

0:10:50 > 0:10:54has got to work, they wanted to save their effort for the Sprint,

0:10:54 > 0:10:59but this group further up the road is just way too dangerous, they

0:10:59 > 0:11:04need to get on top of it as quickly as possible. Alarm bells are

0:11:04 > 0:11:09ringing, and they are ringing because this is very, very

0:11:09 > 0:11:14dangerous for Great Britain. They know it, they could do with some

0:11:14 > 0:11:20allies to come and help with the workload. Mark Cavendish's gold

0:11:21 > 0:11:26medal chances are slipping away here. Oh, there's a crash! They

0:11:26 > 0:11:33have gone into the barriers! Well, one of the big favourites has gone

0:11:33 > 0:11:38out. Fabien Cancellara has gone out, one of the best bike riders in the

0:11:38 > 0:11:42world. That's really going to change the course of the race. 56

0:11:42 > 0:11:49seconds to the leading group, and if that is correct, this race is

0:11:49 > 0:11:57over. The winner will come from that front group. A downhill

0:11:57 > 0:12:07attack! Bradley Wiggins has worked incredibly hard for his team, he is

0:12:07 > 0:12:14spent. He looks across to Vinokourov, Uran Uran looks over

0:12:14 > 0:12:24his shoulder, and Vinokourov has caught him napping! He comes up the

0:12:24 > 0:12:32line, to take the gold medal! He is the Olympic champion!

0:12:32 > 0:12:37A rather subdued atmosphere on the Mall. It is fair to say that there

0:12:37 > 0:12:47could have been a more popular winner than Alexander Vinokourov,

0:12:47 > 0:12:48

0:12:48 > 0:12:58who has been largely unrepentant since his ban for doping in 2007.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01

0:13:01 > 0:13:09At the finish, it was confirmed that the man who crashed may well

0:13:09 > 0:13:14have seen his Olympic Games come to an end. Let's be honest, it is not

0:13:14 > 0:13:19often in the last six weeks, after a day's cycle racing, but you have

0:13:19 > 0:13:25been able to say, that has been a really bad race for Great Britain.

0:13:25 > 0:13:32It is disappointing. But we did everything. It is one of those

0:13:32 > 0:13:36things, you cannot make excuses. The guys did everything, what they

0:13:36 > 0:13:43did was incredible, to see the colour but they have got, riding

0:13:43 > 0:13:52like that for me... The Olympics, and Mark Cavendish, it is just not

0:13:52 > 0:13:57a Dream Team, is it? Obviously not. You just feel for him, because this

0:13:57 > 0:14:02was the gaping hole on his CV. feel for him, but I think watching

0:14:02 > 0:14:07the race, they let these guys so far ahead. I guess they are not

0:14:07 > 0:14:12allowed to be told in the Olympics how far behind they are? No, they

0:14:12 > 0:14:16are not. But they must have had some kind of sense that they were

0:14:16 > 0:14:21five or six minutes behind. It was the tactics employed during the

0:14:21 > 0:14:26whole race. I guess when you have that reputation, everybody else

0:14:26 > 0:14:30wants to beat you. But if you know that's going to happen, isn't that

0:14:30 > 0:14:38all the more reason to make sure you do not let people get away from

0:14:38 > 0:14:45you? I guess they thought that they were unable to catch them. Yes,

0:14:45 > 0:14:52they are a fantastic team, and you would expect that to be something

0:14:52 > 0:14:56that they would already know. But I feel so sorry for somebody like

0:14:56 > 0:15:01Mark Cavendish. He missed out in Beijing, the only cyclist not to

0:15:01 > 0:15:07get a medal. Gold medal was expected this time. He has got to

0:15:07 > 0:15:13take that now. He has said that he will probably not be racing in Rio,

0:15:13 > 0:15:18because it will be too hilly for him. So, this is it. I am not a

0:15:18 > 0:15:23cyclist, so I do not understand the tactics, but clearly, they did not

0:15:23 > 0:15:27get it as right as they could of. Before the race, didn't they say

0:15:27 > 0:15:35that on every climb, they were going to make sure that they stayed

0:15:35 > 0:15:41close to them, and that didn't happen? I think there were quite a

0:15:41 > 0:15:45few breaks which were unexpected. And after the Tour de France, when

0:15:45 > 0:15:49you have had that communication, it is a different set of tactics, but

0:15:49 > 0:15:59what about Vinokourov, who has served his time for doping, and he

0:15:59 > 0:16:02

0:16:02 > 0:16:07is allowed to compete again - does You can't say it is tarnished. He

0:16:07 > 0:16:11won it. The fact that he has been unrepentant about it makes it a

0:16:11 > 0:16:18muddle that I am not happy to see a guy like that winning, but rules

0:16:18 > 0:16:24are rules. He is allowed, as long as he comes up King. David Millar

0:16:24 > 0:16:28served his time as well, with a lot of repentance. We have the best

0:16:28 > 0:16:32testing system there has ever been at these Games. Anyone hoping would

0:16:32 > 0:16:36be caught. What about finishing your career with that niggling

0:16:36 > 0:16:46doubt that there is something you should have won? You did not win a

0:16:46 > 0:16:52French, John. "facts, Gabby"(!). Her you knew the French were coming.

0:16:52 > 0:17:00I was actually up 2-0, so I was the one that got caught, which is even

0:17:00 > 0:17:04worse. I know how it feels that I should have won. That is a tough

0:17:04 > 0:17:13one to swallow. That is the one I think about all the time. Next

0:17:13 > 0:17:19subject. No joy for Cavendish, but the wheels keep turning tomorrow.

0:17:19 > 0:17:29Remember this four years ago? challenge is coming. Is she going

0:17:29 > 0:17:30

0:17:30 > 0:17:40to run out of power? Cooke takes it! Nicole Cooke is the Olympic

0:17:40 > 0:17:45

0:17:45 > 0:17:55champion. Nicole Cooke, storming to glory in

0:17:55 > 0:18:05

0:18:05 > 0:18:11Still to come tonight: we will be taking a dip in the pool for four

0:18:11 > 0:18:18swimming finals. We are run parade for the beach

0:18:18 > 0:18:26volleyball. And we are boxing clever as battle

0:18:26 > 0:18:31commences in the ring. Live-action continues on the red

0:18:31 > 0:18:35button and online. That is the place to be for volleyball,

0:18:36 > 0:18:45badminton and boxing. Swimming now. One of the iconic

0:18:46 > 0:18:58

0:18:58 > 0:19:06Olympic sports that has produced Being able to have the opportunity

0:19:06 > 0:19:11to go over to London and swim in the Stars and Stripes. Michael

0:19:11 > 0:19:17Phelps is great. It is something that would be absolutely amazing.

0:19:17 > 0:19:25Six golds, six world records in six days. The guy is invincible.

0:19:25 > 0:19:32will be very emotional. It is an honour. Eight straight gold medals.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36Michael Phelps is the greatest. is quite awesome, but he has a

0:19:36 > 0:19:41pretender to the throne. I imagine that in the States, he has been on

0:19:41 > 0:19:46the cover of Vogue magazine, Ryan Lochte, so Michael Phelps must feel

0:19:46 > 0:19:49under pressure. That is part of what is inspiring him. There was a

0:19:49 > 0:19:54question over whether he should even come back to near Olympics.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58How do you top what he did? You have won eight golds. To try and do

0:19:58 > 0:20:02it against a guy who is hungrier and has changed his game and is

0:20:02 > 0:20:07trying to get inside his head, Phelps admitted he had not trained

0:20:07 > 0:20:11hard for two or three years, so it is a tall order. He may not have it

0:20:11 > 0:20:17all his own way in London, as he faces a battle for supremacy with

0:20:17 > 0:20:21one of his own team-mates. Phelps is going toe-to-toe and head

0:20:21 > 0:20:27to head with fellow American Ryan Lochte, and this should prove to be

0:20:27 > 0:20:31one of the battles of the Games. It he their Olympic trophy cabinet,

0:20:31 > 0:20:35Lochte has three gold medals. Phelps has an incredible 14. In

0:20:35 > 0:20:41London, they will race each other twice, but both expect to swim in

0:20:41 > 0:20:47seven events. At the world championships last year, Lochte won

0:20:47 > 0:20:51five goals. The question is, who will be king of the swim?

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Tonight, the lean, mean swimming machine was determined to start off

0:20:54 > 0:21:00in style and win the 400m individual medley cry record-

0:21:00 > 0:21:03breaking third time. But Phelps only just qualified. He went in

0:21:03 > 0:21:10lane eight. World champion Lochte, who took bronze in Beijing, was

0:21:10 > 0:21:16third fastest and was in lane three. But Kosuke Hagino of Japan was the

0:21:16 > 0:21:26fastest qualifiers and was in lane four. The commentators are Andy

0:21:26 > 0:21:32

0:21:32 > 0:21:42in the final of the men's 400m individual medley. A decent start

0:21:42 > 0:21:50

0:21:50 > 0:21:56Lochte got a fantastic start as well. He is taking it by the scruff

0:21:56 > 0:22:06of the neck. Not much separating them, 0.1 of a second. Lochte has

0:22:06 > 0:22:16got the best of the kicks under water. Lochte taking the lead would

0:22:16 > 0:22:17

0:22:17 > 0:22:23be very interesting. The backstroke is Lochte's best race. He is the

0:22:23 > 0:22:28200 backstroke world champion. The first to turn was Ryan Lochte of

0:22:28 > 0:22:33the USA, followed by Michael Phelps of the USA. As expected, it has

0:22:33 > 0:22:37started already. It is a head to head. This is where Ryan Lochte

0:22:37 > 0:22:44will try and make a move. His breaststroke is also better than

0:22:44 > 0:22:48Phelps'. At the moment, you would think Lochte looks the strongest.

0:22:48 > 0:22:53Phelps will not like this. He is a big racer, and he will not like

0:22:53 > 0:22:58being away from Lochte. Lochte will try and make a move on this

0:22:58 > 0:23:04backstroke. He has to take advantage. What a great turn from

0:23:04 > 0:23:10Lochte. Are we seeing a new king? Ryan Lochte is looking pretty

0:23:10 > 0:23:14dominant. Phelps looks a bit ropey at the bottom. Lochte is the world

0:23:14 > 0:23:24champion on this event. A beautiful backstroke. He does have that

0:23:24 > 0:23:26

0:23:26 > 0:23:35little wriggle, but very smooth. He has worked hard. So, the halfway

0:23:35 > 0:23:45mark in this men's 400 final. Ryan Lochte has a big league now. Phelps

0:23:45 > 0:23:45

0:23:45 > 0:23:55is in third place. He looks in trouble here. Kisik Lee Aquino, the

0:23:55 > 0:24:00

0:24:00 > 0:24:0617-year-old, is battling it out for that silver medal -- Kosuke Hagino.

0:24:06 > 0:24:11Ryan Lochte is having the swim of his life it. He has just taken six

0:24:11 > 0:24:19tenths of a second of the world record. He is really working. He

0:24:19 > 0:24:24has a great freestyle, two. This is going to be fascinating. Could we

0:24:24 > 0:24:33see Michael Phelps lose the world record? Is he going to lose the 400

0:24:34 > 0:24:43to this guy? He is leading by miles. Ryan Lochte in lane three. Second

0:24:44 > 0:24:46

0:24:46 > 0:24:56is the Brazilian. Michael Phelps is only 4th. Lochte is absolutely

0:24:56 > 0:24:56

0:24:56 > 0:25:00superb. A maestro here, on world- record pace. They are the same age.

0:25:00 > 0:25:05Lochte is still 27. He has dominated from start to finish.

0:25:05 > 0:25:14Nobody will catch him now. It is all about the world record. I hope

0:25:14 > 0:25:18the crowd lifts the roof of this. The crowd is going nuts, not only

0:25:18 > 0:25:23because this gentleman is going to become the new Olympic champion on

0:25:23 > 0:25:29the 400 medley. This is brilliant to see. Michelle Obama is cheering

0:25:29 > 0:25:37on Ryan Lochte. Look at this gold medal. Who would have thought it?

0:25:37 > 0:25:42Ryan Lochte wins the 400 medley. Second was the Brazilian. Third

0:25:42 > 0:25:49from Japan, and look at that - Michael Phelps is fourth! I think

0:25:49 > 0:25:54we knew Phelps was in trouble. It was only going to go one way on the

0:25:54 > 0:26:04backstroke. But I didn't expect him to go that slow. He did look crabby

0:26:04 > 0:26:19

0:26:19 > 0:26:24on the backstroke. And what an Four years, what a long time. I put

0:26:25 > 0:26:29the work in. I know it is my time, and I am ready. Is this the start

0:26:29 > 0:26:34of a serious quest? It was the Michael four -- the Michael showed

0:26:34 > 0:26:41four years ago. Is it going to be the Ryan show? I sure hope so. I am

0:26:41 > 0:26:47just having fun and doing what I do best.

0:26:47 > 0:26:55He annihilated the field. It is first blood to Ryan Lochte on his

0:26:55 > 0:26:59quest to become the King of the pool in 2012. And he's so cool as

0:26:59 > 0:27:03well, so affable. I do remember Phelps jumping out of the pool and

0:27:03 > 0:27:08offering himself up for interviews four years ago. He does some

0:27:08 > 0:27:14unusual things, but it is good for the sport, because you don't see a

0:27:14 > 0:27:18lot of them in the pool. It was awesome to be there. That was my

0:27:18 > 0:27:28first official event that I was that other than the opening

0:27:28 > 0:27:34ceremony. The intensity was there. It was the first race of the

0:27:34 > 0:27:39evening. The First Lady was there as well. She was close by. I did a

0:27:39 > 0:27:46piece for NBC with Ryan, and there was an intensity to him and a look

0:27:46 > 0:27:51in his eye that this time, it was going to be his time. But I am more

0:27:51 > 0:27:54surprised at Phelps than about why and when it. There were rumours

0:27:54 > 0:27:58that his training had not been quite up to it. I wonder how he

0:27:58 > 0:28:07could train after his wins in Beijing. What motivation do you

0:28:07 > 0:28:12have? What about having a new nemesis? Isn't that motivation?

0:28:12 > 0:28:17necessarily. You have to establish some new goals, and it can't be

0:28:17 > 0:28:21just to do the same thing you did before. You have to establish new

0:28:21 > 0:28:28goals that will prompt you to get out there every day and train as

0:28:28 > 0:28:32hard as you can. I heard him say the other side were better prepared,

0:28:32 > 0:28:39but why? As John said, his training was not what it should have been,

0:28:39 > 0:28:45and that was because of a light -- lack of motivation, have probably.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48It is difficult. You have to establish new goals, whether it is

0:28:48 > 0:28:53breaking records or making history again. But once you get to that

0:28:53 > 0:28:59level, it is much more difficult. And Lochte has got that mountain to

0:28:59 > 0:29:02climb. He has been inspired by what is possible. That is how we change

0:29:02 > 0:29:07sport. Someone is inspired by someone else's achievement, and

0:29:07 > 0:29:14they then have the hunger to replicate it or do it better.

0:29:14 > 0:29:18was also the race where fault was not sure he was going to be in it.

0:29:18 > 0:29:24They will go again in the 200m individual medley next. The since

0:29:25 > 0:29:29the toughest of the swimming races. You will really see how great at

0:29:29 > 0:29:35these guys are Athletics Cliff. But he was not sure. I think he got a

0:29:35 > 0:29:44bit like "I will show this Ryan Lochte", and all of a sudden, he

0:29:44 > 0:29:49didn't have it. It is not his most loved event. Watching his

0:29:49 > 0:29:55interviews going into this race, I did not feel the "I will show that

0:29:55 > 0:30:01Lochte". I did not get that sense from him. How useful was your

0:30:01 > 0:30:08nemesis, John? You had a great rivalries over the years. A, as is

0:30:08 > 0:30:14a great example of where I worked hard to do better than him. And I

0:30:14 > 0:30:17think Lochte saw that in Beijing. He was happy-go-lucky and eating in

0:30:17 > 0:30:20McDonald's and maybe he would skateboard and fall off and had

0:30:20 > 0:30:30himself, and then he realised he had to be more serious about his

0:30:30 > 0:30:34

0:30:34 > 0:30:44It changed every race, my main rival. There was always someone.

0:30:44 > 0:30:49

0:30:49 > 0:30:55They just kept coming. I think I was my own biggest rival. It is 11

0:30:55 > 0:31:01o'clock, and the day is far from over. This is the scene in Olympic

0:31:01 > 0:31:09Park. Here's what's still to come tonight. We will be catching up

0:31:09 > 0:31:18with Team GB's men's gymnasts, who had an emotional day. We will be

0:31:18 > 0:31:28saluting the will sell heroes. -- saluting the unsung heroes. And we

0:31:28 > 0:31:31

0:31:31 > 0:31:33will be back at the pool for some more action. But before all of that,

0:31:33 > 0:31:41let's goal-kicking to Horse Guards Parade for some beach volleyball.

0:31:41 > 0:31:46Colin Jackson is common in one of the more historic venues of these

0:31:46 > 0:31:51Games. You have had a great day, I believe - how is it going? It is

0:31:52 > 0:31:57absolutely wonderful down here. Horse Guards Parade is a beautiful

0:31:57 > 0:32:01location for a very exciting sport, and I urge you, if you have got a

0:32:01 > 0:32:11spare sub-in the day, get yourself a ticket and get down here, because

0:32:11 > 0:32:30

0:32:31 > 0:32:37you will be in for a real treat. The crowds are starting to build up,

0:32:37 > 0:32:43but I am looking for the DJ right now. That guide chooses all the

0:32:43 > 0:32:53music, to get everybody enthusiastic. Whatever happens out

0:32:53 > 0:32:56

0:32:56 > 0:33:02there, this guy chooses the music to react to the action. Can you

0:33:02 > 0:33:07imagine this between the heats in the 100m? I don't think so. This is

0:33:07 > 0:33:11amazing. Beach volleyball has a really big history of being

0:33:11 > 0:33:15entertaining. Obviously, we want to show that it is not just about

0:33:15 > 0:33:25beautiful girls. We want to show that the dancers are as athletic as

0:33:25 > 0:33:27

0:33:27 > 0:33:31the accretes. And guess what? That's Team GB! The atmosphere in

0:33:31 > 0:33:41the crowd is just amazing. They are loving it, they are getting behind

0:33:41 > 0:33:49it, the music, the dancing and the fanfares, it works a treat.

0:33:49 > 0:33:59Canadians on your right... Looped over the top of Reader, their first

0:33:59 > 0:34:03

0:34:03 > 0:34:12point. And when we get a point, the crowd goes wild. Grotowski sets it

0:34:12 > 0:34:16up... Great deflection from Grotowski. That counts as a touch.

0:34:16 > 0:34:21Reader unleashes, but Garcia- Thompson is there. Fantastic work

0:34:21 > 0:34:28by the British team! Back again to the Canadians. Binstock just

0:34:28 > 0:34:35warming himself up... Great block! Garcia-Thompson could not direct

0:34:35 > 0:34:45that. Bad luck that time, but the boys are doing all right. We're

0:34:45 > 0:34:51

0:34:51 > 0:35:00having a bit of a technical Grotowski has a very powerful jump

0:35:00 > 0:35:06serve. Reader gets under it... And he finds space! The Canadians have

0:35:06 > 0:35:10won against Great Britain. A can feel a sense of disappointment, but

0:35:10 > 0:35:16the atmosphere is totally incredible. Tell us, how does it

0:35:16 > 0:35:21feel? It was a wonderful atmosphere, you can really feel it. It is one

0:35:21 > 0:35:31of the most exciting moments in my sporting life. I would like to say

0:35:31 > 0:35:32

0:35:32 > 0:35:38thank you to everybody. No, they were right behind us. The whole

0:35:39 > 0:35:42crowd was getting into it. There was nothing we wanted more than to

0:35:42 > 0:35:50win that match, but we have two more, so, we have got a lot of work

0:35:50 > 0:35:57to do. You can do it. I'm sure our British boys can do it. What chance

0:35:57 > 0:36:00have they got? I took a lot of positives from today. They had some

0:36:00 > 0:36:05fantastic points which they were battling for. In their group, they

0:36:05 > 0:36:08have got a Brazilian team, also, the Norwegians. I think if they get

0:36:08 > 0:36:14a result against the Norwegians, they have got a chance of taking

0:36:14 > 0:36:17that third spot, which could get them into the knockout. You're

0:36:17 > 0:36:23warned other commentators, so you know some things about this game. I

0:36:23 > 0:36:28have been watching some of the hand signals, what is it all about?

0:36:28 > 0:36:32of the key strategies that you can control, as a player, is the

0:36:32 > 0:36:42blocking at the net. One player sits at the net, the other one sits

0:36:42 > 0:36:46

0:36:46 > 0:36:52back. Two fingers like that means, a line block. This means you're

0:36:52 > 0:36:56going to block the shot across. They have been showing the signals

0:36:56 > 0:37:01on the big screen, and the players have been up in arms about it. So,

0:37:01 > 0:37:06there is a bit of work to be done on that. But it is a fantastically

0:37:06 > 0:37:11tactical game. You say that, there have been lots of stories about the

0:37:11 > 0:37:15fact that it is not really an Olympic sport, it seems like

0:37:15 > 0:37:21something that's done for pleasure - tell us about the background to

0:37:21 > 0:37:26the sport. Think about it, they are playing on sand, which is like a

0:37:26 > 0:37:30massive sponge, it takes so much energy to jump like they are doing,

0:37:30 > 0:37:36to change direction. They have got to have perfect footwork, that's

0:37:36 > 0:37:40the real key to this. Changing direction, making sure that your

0:37:40 > 0:37:44feet are moving. You have to be able to explode upwards at the net.

0:37:44 > 0:37:48You see the way these guys are breeding when they come off the

0:37:48 > 0:37:54court, and I dare you to say it is not physical. There is a lot of

0:37:54 > 0:37:59noise, who are the favourites? reigning Olympic champions from

0:37:59 > 0:38:04Beijing, the United States, up against Australia, it is a

0:38:04 > 0:38:14fantastic game, and this lot are going crazy. Let's and send you

0:38:14 > 0:38:29

0:38:29 > 0:38:35straight over to our commentator in Gary Walsh and Misty May -- Kerri

0:38:35 > 0:38:38Walsh and Misty May-Treanor, they became the first team ever to

0:38:38 > 0:38:43successfully defend the Olympic title, and this year, they are

0:38:43 > 0:38:49going for the hat-trick. They are up against the Australians, who, as

0:38:49 > 0:38:59you can see, are fully committed to this. Nat Cook, on the right, has

0:38:59 > 0:39:02

0:39:02 > 0:39:06become the first player ever to play in five Olympic Games. Her

0:39:06 > 0:39:13second one was Bondi Beach, that was truly beach volleyball, right

0:39:13 > 0:39:18on the beach. This is her new partner. It really is rocking

0:39:18 > 0:39:28tonight at Horse Guards Parade. It is the hottest ticket in town.

0:39:28 > 0:39:38

0:39:38 > 0:39:48Kerri Walsh drills it down into the sand. The service from Misty May-

0:39:48 > 0:39:53

0:39:53 > 0:40:03Treanor was perfect, allowing Kerri Cook a loads with that, a beautiful

0:40:03 > 0:40:06

0:40:06 > 0:40:16spike. They are all in their 30s, these players. Kerri Walsh is 33,

0:40:16 > 0:40:30

0:40:30 > 0:40:34Nothing between them in the first set. Nat Cook has done well. This

0:40:34 > 0:40:44is a good opportunity. Can Misty May-Treanor finish it? She can

0:40:44 > 0:40:52

0:40:52 > 0:41:00indeed. Wonderful positional play Just too a hot to handle for Nat

0:41:00 > 0:41:04Cook. Time-out called by the Australians. That was a good

0:41:04 > 0:41:08decision, because you could just sense that Kerri Walsh was on a bit

0:41:08 > 0:41:18of a roll, eager to go. They waited until the last possible minute, and

0:41:18 > 0:41:25

0:41:25 > 0:41:32There is all sorts going on around the stadium. The Benny Hill music

0:41:32 > 0:41:37comes on, and a place goes wild. On the top of the museum is an artist,

0:41:37 > 0:41:47who has been commissioned by Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, to

0:41:47 > 0:41:53

0:41:53 > 0:42:03paint the scene. He has been busy The Americans, the defending

0:42:03 > 0:42:12champions. Cook decides to take the serve, it might have dropped out.

0:42:12 > 0:42:17Kerri Walsh goes over the top, but Cook was ready for it. Kerri Walsh

0:42:17 > 0:42:27decided to go solo and play the point in two hits, when three are

0:42:27 > 0:42:37permitted. That, after seeing that her partner was down in the dust.

0:42:37 > 0:42:46

0:42:46 > 0:42:56Great dive from Nat Cook! Here we go again... Kerri Walsh, over the

0:42:56 > 0:43:01

0:43:01 > 0:43:11top, perfect placement. And the The last match of the day in Horse

0:43:11 > 0:43:16

0:43:16 > 0:43:26Tamsin Hinchley cleverly guides the ball across the angle, to draw

0:43:26 > 0:43:34

0:43:34 > 0:43:42The signal goes out to the server. Misty May-Treanor now scurries

0:43:42 > 0:43:52forward, and drifts the ball over the head of Nat Cook. That was a

0:43:52 > 0:44:03

0:44:03 > 0:44:11perfect play by the Americans, who Nat Cook, slightly out of -- out of

0:44:11 > 0:44:17position, but no manner, -- no matter, she managed to improvise.

0:44:17 > 0:44:27The Australians are here in force as well. They have got their

0:44:27 > 0:44:35

0:44:35 > 0:44:45That was simply too hot to handle for Nat Cook. She got her body in

0:44:45 > 0:44:46

0:44:46 > 0:44:53the way but could not direct the ball towards her partner. Kerri

0:44:53 > 0:45:03Walsh checks the signals with Misty May-Treanor. Cook has missed the

0:45:03 > 0:45:04

0:45:04 > 0:45:14target. And a two-point advantage has opened up for Misty May-Treanor

0:45:14 > 0:45:20

0:45:20 > 0:45:30All Misty May could do was get a hand to the ball. The gap has

0:45:30 > 0:45:32

0:45:32 > 0:45:38closed. This match is being played in a pool C. Four teams in each

0:45:38 > 0:45:48pool. Each of the 24 teams will play three preliminary matches.

0:45:48 > 0:46:02

0:46:02 > 0:46:11This is good for the Americans. That could be a key block. 17-17.

0:46:11 > 0:46:21Good ploy. Excellent tactic to take the Australians by surprise and re-

0:46:21 > 0:46:25

0:46:25 > 0:46:35establish the lead. A change of ends. Kerri Walsh with the serving

0:46:35 > 0:46:36

0:46:36 > 0:46:46duties. Natalie Cook drilled that one down into the sand. There

0:46:46 > 0:46:47

0:46:47 > 0:46:57earlier enjoyed it as well. A finger waved towards her opponent.

0:46:57 > 0:46:58

0:46:58 > 0:47:04It is 18 points each in the first set. A despairing dive from Natalie

0:47:04 > 0:47:10Cook was not enough to pick it up after Misty May took the

0:47:10 > 0:47:20opportunity to go solo. The Americans need two points for the

0:47:20 > 0:47:24

0:47:24 > 0:47:33opening set. It is a scramble for the Australians. And they die of it

0:47:33 > 0:47:39from Misty May sends the ball into an open court. Spotted the

0:47:39 > 0:47:49opportunity, and had no hesitation in finishing off this point in

0:47:49 > 0:48:00

0:48:00 > 0:48:06spectacular style. Can the Australians keep the set alive? The

0:48:06 > 0:48:13defending champions, the USA com are on top, taking the first set by

0:48:13 > 0:48:1721-18. First blood to the US. You can

0:48:18 > 0:48:21carry on watching that very tight game live online or on the red

0:48:21 > 0:48:28button. It truly is spectacular there. You can't quite believe that

0:48:28 > 0:48:38is being played in this country. You can't. It is normally probably

0:48:38 > 0:48:38

0:48:38 > 0:48:47played in some lovely, hot days In Beijing, it was a great match,

0:48:47 > 0:48:54but it was raining. Imagine rain! What a great setting. They are

0:48:54 > 0:48:57going for their straight -- third straight gold, Kerri Walsh and

0:48:57 > 0:49:01Misty May. Spectacular scenes last night of course at the opening

0:49:01 > 0:49:08ceremony. We were discussing it earlier. You alluded to the fact

0:49:08 > 0:49:12that the torch was lit in such a beautiful, simple way, passing the

0:49:12 > 0:49:19torch on to the next generation. Tell us about the girl you chose.

0:49:19 > 0:49:28Adelle Tracey is one of the people on my camp before I won my two

0:49:28 > 0:49:32dolts. She is up and coming. She has won various championships. The

0:49:32 > 0:49:36day I told her was after the diamond lead at Crystal Palace. I

0:49:36 > 0:49:43said, I can't tell you anything other than that you will get a call

0:49:43 > 0:49:47the 2012. Keep your diary free. And when she got the call...! It was so

0:49:47 > 0:49:51nice. I love that we can pass things on to the next generation.

0:49:51 > 0:49:55It is something I have always done, my whole career, and I feel

0:49:55 > 0:50:00passionate about it. This moment, look at that cauldron. For those

0:50:00 > 0:50:06young people to be part of this really get the message of what the

0:50:06 > 0:50:16games were about. This is beautiful. I assume it came over on telly, but

0:50:16 > 0:50:18

0:50:18 > 0:50:24each of these pieces were carried in by the team. It was a beautiful

0:50:24 > 0:50:28cauldron, no doubt about it. Let me express mild disappointment that it

0:50:28 > 0:50:32was not Sir Steve Redgrave, because he seems to be the greatest of all

0:50:32 > 0:50:38Olympians. Hold your fire, we will have a greatest of all Olympians

0:50:38 > 0:50:42chat later. But it was like they did not want him to decide who that

0:50:42 > 0:50:48was. The Olympics from the beginning has been different. It is

0:50:48 > 0:50:51about legacy. That is always the big thing - who will light the

0:50:52 > 0:51:01torch? There is betting on it, and I thought it was great that London

0:51:02 > 0:51:03

0:51:03 > 0:51:09stayed true to the idea of legacy. Steve did health -- have a big role.

0:51:09 > 0:51:13What was so good was the twist. No one knew. You add all the Olympians.

0:51:13 > 0:51:21They did not know we were part of this whole process. Then Steve

0:51:21 > 0:51:25Redgrave comes in, everyone thinking he is going to get it.

0:51:25 > 0:51:29Roger Bannister was up on the betting list. I thought it was such

0:51:29 > 0:51:39a great twist. Did you have a moment, either of you, that really

0:51:39 > 0:51:40

0:51:40 > 0:51:46stood out? It was that moment, and the Queen. Mr Bean. Rowan Atkinson

0:51:46 > 0:51:50hitting that one note. That was pretty solid. I think it was

0:51:50 > 0:51:58universally appreciated. We have loads more to come. Here is a quick

0:51:58 > 0:52:03check on some of the news from day one.

0:52:03 > 0:52:07It was a good day for Great Britain down at Dorney in the rowing. The

0:52:07 > 0:52:11highlight of the morning's action was carried Glover and Heather

0:52:11 > 0:52:14Stanning making it through to the final with a new Olympic record.

0:52:15 > 0:52:19The final is on Wednesday and history could be made, as Britain

0:52:19 > 0:52:22has never won a gold in women's rowing before.

0:52:22 > 0:52:29The of football, the women put in another impressive performance,

0:52:29 > 0:52:34this time beating Cameroon. Goals came from Casey Stoney and just got,

0:52:34 > 0:52:38and Steph Houghton got her second. They go to the quarter-finals with

0:52:38 > 0:52:45a game to spare. They face Brazil at Wembley.

0:52:45 > 0:52:55The first gold for the Games went to China's Yi Siling. The

0:52:55 > 0:52:58sharpshooter lived up to her favourites tag.

0:52:58 > 0:53:03Keeping the girl power theme going, judo will's first gold went to

0:53:03 > 0:53:09Sarah Menezes of Brazil in the 48 kg class. There were amazing scenes

0:53:09 > 0:53:12down at the ExCel, because this 22- year-old grew up in one of the

0:53:12 > 0:53:16poorest estates in North Brazil. She lied to their parents about

0:53:16 > 0:53:21taking judo classes at school because they did not approve. And

0:53:21 > 0:53:26just look - this is what it is about. This is the Olympic dream.

0:53:26 > 0:53:30This girl will be huge in four years' time. She is only the second

0:53:30 > 0:53:34Brazilian girl about to win an individual gold. She will be huge

0:53:34 > 0:53:39and she could be in for a lot of pressure, but also a lot of support

0:53:39 > 0:53:42over the next four years. That is an incredible story. When you hear

0:53:43 > 0:53:46that type of story and then come through and win it, with the

0:53:46 > 0:53:49Olympics coming to Rio at the next Games, it will be phenomenal for

0:53:49 > 0:53:55her. It was great to see the emotion and her reaction after

0:53:55 > 0:54:04winning. We can all become a bit cynical, John, in life. The way

0:54:04 > 0:54:10these questions are being presented...! I think she was

0:54:10 > 0:54:17saying, I told you so. To her parents. And she has moved right up

0:54:17 > 0:54:20from Beijing. She was way down the field. Well done, Sarah.

0:54:20 > 0:54:24Gymnastics now. In London, the British team assembled its

0:54:24 > 0:54:27strongest ever live up to compete in an Olympics, so hopes of home

0:54:27 > 0:54:31success are high. Today the men's team were in action, as not only

0:54:31 > 0:54:41were they aiming to qualify for the team final, but also for the

0:54:41 > 0:54:41

0:54:41 > 0:55:24Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds

0:55:24 > 0:55:34That really was classy work. That Control, good, low position of the

0:55:34 > 0:55:34

0:55:34 > 0:56:20Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds

0:56:20 > 0:56:30the vault runway and nailed his battling performance, but he never

0:56:30 > 0:56:30

0:56:30 > 0:57:51Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds

0:57:51 > 0:57:56just got Great Britain into the What a team performance this is

0:57:56 > 0:58:06proving to be. The last time Great Britain got into the top eight was

0:58:06 > 0:58:12in 1924. Here we go, ladies and gentlemen,

0:58:12 > 0:58:22this is Great Britain's Louis Smith. Come on. There are no medals in

0:58:22 > 0:58:24

0:58:24 > 0:58:34this round, but this is where it can all be lost. Very smooth. And

0:58:34 > 0:59:05

0:59:05 > 0:59:15consummate performance from Louis Smith. That well deserves a final

0:59:15 > 0:59:25place. Louis Smith is in the Olympic Podmore Horse Final.

0:59:25 > 0:59:27

0:59:27 > 0:59:32Greg Britain's men qualified an excellent third for Monday's final.

0:59:32 > 0:59:36The USA and Russia are in front of them. They have not qualified for a

0:59:36 > 0:59:40final since 1924. To qualify in third place shows you how brilliant

0:59:40 > 0:59:45the performance coaching has been. They have moved write-up the world

0:59:45 > 0:59:48rankings. It has made a huge difference for the whole of Team GB,

0:59:48 > 0:59:53with the investment in sport and the structures they have put in

0:59:53 > 0:59:57place. More of the team have been able to train full-time. When they

0:59:57 > 1:00:02come into a team event like that, it is important for each of them to

1:00:02 > 1:00:07do their best under pressure. Smith, who got that bronze medal in

1:00:07 > 1:00:11Beijing, is looking for gold. This was just the qualifying, but look

1:00:11 > 1:00:16at their reaction. The poor man was on the podium for five minutes

1:00:16 > 1:00:20beforehand, chalking his hands. Is that pure relief? Seeing Andy

1:00:20 > 1:00:23Murray at Wimbledon, I assume the same thing will take place at the

1:00:23 > 1:00:30Olympics. The pressure has to be unbelievable on athletes in their

1:00:30 > 1:00:35home country. You have got to get past that relief, though, and start

1:00:35 > 1:00:43to focus. Now he is in the final, and there is a great opportunity.

1:00:43 > 1:00:46He has to focus on that. That is the great advantage. The advantage

1:00:47 > 1:00:51is the investment in homes bought leading up to the Games. You would

1:00:51 > 1:01:00hope that, talking about a legacy, the investment will come to new.

1:01:00 > 1:01:03The hero for me today was this man, Kieran Behan from Ireland. He was

1:01:03 > 1:01:08twice told he would never walk again. He suffered complications

1:01:08 > 1:01:12after a tumour was removed. -- from his leg when he was 10. He was in a

1:01:12 > 1:01:16wheelchair. Then he had an accident that left him with brain damage. He

1:01:16 > 1:01:20fought his way back into the gym, battled with knee injuries. He has

1:01:20 > 1:01:30finance issues as well. He was holding raffles and washing cars,

1:01:30 > 1:01:35

1:01:35 > 1:01:40but he made the games and he is I think only the second gymnast

1:01:40 > 1:01:44from Ireland. This is the stuff of dreams. Absolutely. This is what

1:01:44 > 1:01:49the Olympics is all about. The emotion that goes into it, the

1:01:49 > 1:01:54journey that it takes. These stories are what makes the drama of

1:01:54 > 1:02:00the Olympic Games. I really hope he can do well, because this will in

1:02:00 > 1:02:05the world to him. Just to be here. Briefly, your all-time Olympic

1:02:05 > 1:02:10heroes? Jesse Owens, without a doubt. Unbelievable, the greatest

1:02:10 > 1:02:14sprinter of all time, to compete in Hitler's Olympics, under that kind

1:02:14 > 1:02:20of pressure, and wing four gold medals, it was an incredible

1:02:20 > 1:02:25performance. A great, great athlete. I would say Sebastian Coe, first of

1:02:25 > 1:02:29all, he was my hero when I was young. But keeping it up for the

1:02:29 > 1:02:36Brits, I would have to say Sir Steve Redgrave, with his five gold

1:02:36 > 1:02:43medals, and he is a such a great guy as well. I have an obvious

1:02:43 > 1:02:48choice, Mohamed Ali, just for what he represented, but for me, besides

1:02:48 > 1:02:54these two, of course, Nadia Comaneci, she got me much more into

1:02:54 > 1:02:58the Olympics, and when we saw those highlights of the gymnastics, it

1:02:58 > 1:03:03reminded me of her. There was a brilliant documentary a few weeks

1:03:03 > 1:03:13ago, and shared -- she said she did not think her perfect 10 was

1:03:13 > 1:03:15

1:03:15 > 1:03:22perfect. We're going to go back to the pool now. There were three more

1:03:22 > 1:03:25finals tonight. Hannah Miley was the big hope for Great Britain in

1:03:25 > 1:03:31the Women's 400m Individual Medley. She qualified sixth quickest. She

1:03:31 > 1:03:41was going with the favourite Elizabeth Beisel in lane for. We

1:03:41 > 1:03:42

1:03:42 > 1:03:52join the race with just over 200 This could be very interesting.

1:03:52 > 1:04:02Steph Rice in second place, in the yellow cap, a very good backstroke.

1:04:02 > 1:04:09Hannah, this could have played into her hands. It certainly could. You

1:04:09 > 1:04:14can see the Hungarian athlete, Katinka Hosszu, in the pink. Going

1:04:14 > 1:04:21pretty well at the moment is Hannah Miley. You can see her at the

1:04:21 > 1:04:23bottom. Big kick under water, and she is in sixth position, but this

1:04:23 > 1:04:30she is in sixth position, but this leg should be very good for her.

1:04:30 > 1:04:35Come on, Hannah Miley. At the moment, Elizabeth Beisel is leading,

1:04:36 > 1:04:45with Katinka Hosszu going with her. In third place at the moment, the

1:04:46 > 1:04:47

1:04:47 > 1:04:5216-year-old Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen. Elizabeth Beisel, after a

1:04:52 > 1:04:55very sluggish butterfly, it is almost as if she decided to play

1:04:55 > 1:05:02around with the first hundred, save some energy and then push it

1:05:02 > 1:05:09through. She is checking on the Chinese, and also seeing where

1:05:09 > 1:05:15Hannah was. Elizabeth Beisel has got this one sewn up, if the rest

1:05:15 > 1:05:21of the field are not careful. is starting to look really good. It

1:05:21 > 1:05:31has been a decent freestylers well. But the Chinese also have very good

1:05:31 > 1:05:32

1:05:32 > 1:05:40freestylers. But really, the League is quite clear. 100 metres to go in

1:05:40 > 1:05:44this final of the Women's 400m Individual Medley. Hannah Miley

1:05:44 > 1:05:52turns in fifth position. There is a bronze medal in here somewhere, I

1:05:52 > 1:05:57think. It is very, very close. Well, this is interesting. Elizabeth

1:05:57 > 1:06:03Beisel is now being challenged. Look at that Freestyle from Ye

1:06:03 > 1:06:10Shiwen. She has been killed on that first 50. Oh, my goodness, what

1:06:10 > 1:06:14happened? She did that in about 15 metres, utterly extraordinary! Look

1:06:14 > 1:06:19how she is swimming away! Utterly extraordinary. She is still

1:06:19 > 1:06:24swimming away. This is absolutely amazing. The 16-year-old Chinese

1:06:24 > 1:06:34woman, Ye Shiwen. It is Stephanie Rice's world record which is under

1:06:34 > 1:06:37

1:06:37 > 1:06:40threat. Utterly extraordinary! Unbelievable! The second race of

1:06:40 > 1:06:50the Women's 400m Individual Medley hero at the Olympic Games, and it

1:06:50 > 1:06:55as a gold medal to China and a new Olympic record. A new world record

1:06:55 > 1:07:01as well. The bronze medal has gone to Li Xuanxu, and Hannah Miley

1:07:01 > 1:07:06to Li Xuanxu, and Hannah Miley finishes in fifth position. I gave

1:07:06 > 1:07:11it absolutely everything I had. It was a real bun fight just trying to

1:07:11 > 1:07:14get into the final. It was who was able to recover the quickest. I am

1:07:14 > 1:07:21gutted that I did not get a medal, but I could not have given it any

1:07:21 > 1:07:29more. That was everything I had. At the end of the day, it is one place

1:07:29 > 1:07:35better than what they did in Beijing. Well, they said the

1:07:35 > 1:07:40Chinese were coming in the pool, and Ye Shiwen proving that that

1:07:40 > 1:07:48could just be right. Well done to Hannah Miley. There were two more

1:07:49 > 1:07:54finals in the pool tonight. This was another Olympic record, just

1:07:54 > 1:08:04missing out on the world record. Britain's David Carry was seventh

1:08:04 > 1:08:04

1:08:04 > 1:08:12in this one. It was won by Yang Sun. And the women's 4x100m bidet was

1:08:12 > 1:08:18won by Australia. -- relay. Do not worry, we did not get any medals on

1:08:18 > 1:08:22the first day in Beijing, either. Four years ago, a girl from

1:08:22 > 1:08:27Mansfield lit up the pool in Beijing, and made history, by

1:08:27 > 1:08:37winning a first gold for Britain in half a century. Tomorrow, all eyes

1:08:37 > 1:08:42

1:08:42 > 1:08:48will be on Rebecca Adlington once COMMENTATOR: Great Britain have won

1:08:48 > 1:08:57a gold medal in the swimming pool! I am standing up to salute Rebecca

1:08:57 > 1:09:05Adlington! Rebecca Adlington, you are absolutely brilliant.

1:09:05 > 1:09:09She goes just after 12 o'clock tomorrow. That's the 400m. If there

1:09:09 > 1:09:15was a weaker of and for her, that would be it. But the pressure is

1:09:15 > 1:09:19totally different to Beijing. -- a weaker event. You could see the

1:09:19 > 1:09:23naivety back in Beijing, the whole thing was just magical. Absolutely.

1:09:23 > 1:09:28To have somebody that was under the radar, who came out completely on

1:09:29 > 1:09:35top, this is a different story, of course, being on home turf, with

1:09:35 > 1:09:41high expectations. But I think the 400m will be a really close race.

1:09:41 > 1:09:46She can definitely get a medal, I would say. I would say the 800m

1:09:46 > 1:09:50would be an even better bet for her. It takes you into new territory,

1:09:51 > 1:09:57doesn't it, when you come with that reputation, with the gold medals?

1:09:57 > 1:10:01We were talking about it earlier on with Phelps. I interviewed Rebecca

1:10:01 > 1:10:05for my book, and we talk about the pressure of expectation, and how

1:10:06 > 1:10:11you can duplicate it, and she said that basic the, she trains at the

1:10:11 > 1:10:15same club she has always trained at, with all the amateur swimmers, and

1:10:15 > 1:10:19she gets her kicks from motivating those other athletes, and then

1:10:19 > 1:10:27looking up to her. She sees herself as a true role model, and she says

1:10:27 > 1:10:29that is what really drives her. For an athlete like her, not as well

1:10:29 > 1:10:36known around the world as Phelps, there is that sufficient motivation,

1:10:36 > 1:10:40I would say. And certainly, on home soil. And as a champion, you like

1:10:40 > 1:10:47winning, I guess. I would certainly hope so. It is all about the

1:10:47 > 1:10:51intensity of the moment, it is every four years. It felt like the

1:10:51 > 1:11:01athletes were barely breathing, I can only imagine what it must be

1:11:01 > 1:11:03

1:11:03 > 1:11:07like. The other possibility is that you get the adrenalin which

1:11:07 > 1:11:17actually inspires you, and Rebecca could be even better than she was

1:11:17 > 1:11:22

1:11:22 > 1:11:26four years ago. Remember this man from the Sydney Games? Here we have

1:11:26 > 1:11:34this swimmer from equatorial Guinea. I have never seen anything like

1:11:34 > 1:11:38this at the Olympic Games before. Adrian, I'm not sure he is going to

1:11:38 > 1:11:47make it. No, he is, this is the Olympics, he has got 17,000 people

1:11:47 > 1:11:51cheering for him. Well, I thought I had seen everything in the Olympic

1:11:51 > 1:11:55swimming pool. Well, there were rumours that Eric

1:11:55 > 1:11:59was in town as coach of the equatorial Guinea's winning team,

1:11:59 > 1:12:07but we have discovered that they do not have any swimmers this time

1:12:07 > 1:12:17around. But he inspired for us, we think, one of the greatest underdog

1:12:17 > 1:12:22

1:12:22 > 1:12:26First up tonight, the men's 400m individual medley. Hats off to the

1:12:26 > 1:12:36man from Qatar. He kept going in this brutal event, but eventually

1:12:36 > 1:12:43

1:12:43 > 1:12:48finished a minute behind the winner. This was the single men's scull. He

1:12:48 > 1:12:58got rapturous applause. During the men's road race, his dog wanted a

1:12:58 > 1:12:59

1:12:59 > 1:13:03piece of the action. -- of this dog. All in good spirits, of course.

1:13:03 > 1:13:11thought you were going to show some footage of me swimming! Legs

1:13:11 > 1:13:17everywhere! It has been a glorious night at the Olympics. The capital

1:13:17 > 1:13:23has been buzzing, the Games has finally begun. Reggie Yates has

1:13:23 > 1:13:27been experiencing the atmosphere down in Hyde Park. For the whole

1:13:27 > 1:13:33day, people have been coming down, putting their feet up, having the

1:13:33 > 1:13:43time of their lives. In the evening, it all kicks off over there on a

1:13:43 > 1:13:44

1:13:44 > 1:13:51huge stage. And there is plenty of sport on the big screens. You not

1:13:51 > 1:13:56seem to have the right idea, with your picnic blanket. Are you

1:13:56 > 1:14:02actually taking in some of the sport? I am going to go and see the

1:14:02 > 1:14:11beach volleyball tomorrow. It will be awesome. How many beers have we

1:14:11 > 1:14:16had so far tonight? Too many! enough! You're not getting in the

1:14:16 > 1:14:26spirit. You have got to, haven't you? Did you wear this to work

1:14:26 > 1:14:29today? I did not go to work today. We were here last night as well.

1:14:29 > 1:14:39it going to be Will Young for you tonight, or is it all about the

1:14:39 > 1:14:40

1:14:40 > 1:14:44sport? It feels as if London is in an amazing mood at the moment,

1:14:44 > 1:14:49everybody coming together to watch the Games - the do you see the

1:14:49 > 1:14:54Opening Ceremony? I saw it down in Cornwall. It is interesting to come

1:14:54 > 1:14:59back into London after that event, and there is a tangible difference.

1:14:59 > 1:15:03Everyone is far more unified. I think it was needed. What's

1:15:03 > 1:15:07brilliant about being British is that we are quite sarcastic. We are

1:15:07 > 1:15:12not easy to impress, but when we are impressed, we get together and

1:15:12 > 1:15:19become really patriotic. Our sense of you were as well. The Queen, Mr

1:15:19 > 1:15:23Bean, and I thought Emily Sande sang like a dream, it was so moving.

1:15:23 > 1:15:29There was real intimacy. It was a massive event, but it was very,

1:15:29 > 1:15:32very moving. I felt like a big kid watching it. One of my favourite

1:15:32 > 1:15:35things about the Olympics is getting into a sport which I knew

1:15:35 > 1:15:41absolutely nothing about before - is that anything which you are

1:15:41 > 1:15:51planning on becoming a massive Fan of? It has to be judo. Or table

1:15:51 > 1:16:02

1:16:02 > 1:16:06It is a bit early for the athletes to be thinking about partying. In

1:16:06 > 1:16:12the village, notoriously, the swimmers finished first. So they

1:16:12 > 1:16:15aggravate other athletes because their partying goes on quite late.

1:16:15 > 1:16:25I stay away from the village altogether until after I have

1:16:25 > 1:16:26

1:16:26 > 1:16:30finished it competing. It is not a nice place to focus. The married

1:16:30 > 1:16:34brothers will not be putting tonight, of course. -- the Murray

1:16:34 > 1:16:44brothers were knocked out. Jamie can go out tonight. But Andy has

1:16:44 > 1:16:48got the singles tomorrow. He starts with the Austrians -- they were

1:16:48 > 1:16:56knocked out of the doubles today by Austria. The they were not big

1:16:56 > 1:17:02favourites, to be honest. It was a tall order. I was surprised that he

1:17:02 > 1:17:06entered the doubles, given that the singles are so important and his

1:17:06 > 1:17:10brother could have gone with somebody else. Believe it or not,

1:17:10 > 1:17:18there was a British player, Jonathan Marray, who did well at

1:17:18 > 1:17:28Wimbledon. Demotion was so well when Andy lost that final, we

1:17:28 > 1:17:31

1:17:31 > 1:17:35surprised that he would be ready to Her that was the toughest loss of

1:17:35 > 1:17:40his career. It was arguably the best that she played, and he still

1:17:40 > 1:17:44did not win. But the good news is that this is a shorter format. You

1:17:44 > 1:17:49are playing best-of-three instead of best-of-five, so that could help

1:17:49 > 1:17:59him. Let's move on to boxing. The games have always unearthed some

1:17:59 > 1:18:23

1:18:23 > 1:18:26fantastic stars. Let's see how many In London, Britain has 10 boxers in

1:18:26 > 1:18:31action, with women making history by entering Olympic competition for

1:18:31 > 1:18:36the first time. But they begin on day nine, so until then, we will

1:18:36 > 1:18:46focus on the seven men who will be aiming to be king of the men. So,

1:18:46 > 1:18:46

1:18:46 > 1:18:50cue the cliche. Yes, these are the magnificent

1:18:50 > 1:18:54seven men who are all aiming to strike gold. The competition is

1:18:54 > 1:18:59fierce and a winning any medal will be a huge achievement. Just one

1:18:59 > 1:19:03Brit was in action today, Anthony Ogogo. The 23-year-old will be

1:19:03 > 1:19:08trying to emulate the feat of James DeGale, who won gold for Britain in

1:19:08 > 1:19:12Beijing. He won goal that the Youth Olympics eight years ago and won a

1:19:12 > 1:19:16silver at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. Today in the first round, he

1:19:16 > 1:19:23faced Junior Castillo of the Dominican Republic. He made a good

1:19:23 > 1:19:27start and had a strong first round. We join the action at the start of

1:19:27 > 1:19:37the third round. Commentary comes from Richie Woodhall and run

1:19:37 > 1:19:38

1:19:38 > 1:19:46lifting his hands, getting the crowd behind him. How the crowd

1:19:46 > 1:19:53have responded in this opening bout. Anthony Ogogo of Great Britain is

1:19:53 > 1:19:57in the red kit. He is leading by five after two completed rounds.

1:19:57 > 1:20:05Now there will be a change of tactics, especially from Junior

1:20:05 > 1:20:09Castillo. That may suit Anthony better. He now has to sit back and

1:20:09 > 1:20:14get the timing right. As his opponent comes to him, he has to

1:20:14 > 1:20:19land those shots. He will look to maintain the tight guard he has

1:20:19 > 1:20:25demonstrated throughout this opening bout at the ExCel Arena.

1:20:25 > 1:20:29Ogogo looks more relaxed now, keeping those hands around his

1:20:29 > 1:20:35waist band. He is out of range at the moment, so no harm have

1:20:35 > 1:20:39anything coming back. Ogogo tasted world success before in 2005. How

1:20:39 > 1:20:43he would love to replicate that success in the biggest amateur

1:20:43 > 1:20:49boxing tournament of them all, the Olympic Games. Does he need to be

1:20:49 > 1:20:52taking any risks here? Nothing is getting through those shops. Just

1:20:52 > 1:20:57needs to stay on the outside and wait for his opponent to come in.

1:20:57 > 1:21:05He has five points ahead, doesn't need to do anything silly. Don't

1:21:05 > 1:21:13take any risks. Just box sensibly and wait for your man to come.

1:21:13 > 1:21:20crowd are really beginning to rouse. Fantastic account a left hook as

1:21:20 > 1:21:25Junior Castillo looked to land his own shot. That was a well-timed

1:21:25 > 1:21:35shot from Anthony Ogogo. Waiting for his opponent to come in. Just

1:21:35 > 1:21:53

1:21:53 > 1:22:03Junior Castillo's work now. We are approaching the final 30 seconds of

1:22:03 > 1:22:09

1:22:09 > 1:22:14hand, leaving him open for a left hook. That is why Ogogo has caught

1:22:14 > 1:22:22him a couple of times. Anthony Ogogo really warming to his task

1:22:22 > 1:22:28now. Junior Castillo knows he has to chase this contest. The openings

1:22:28 > 1:22:32are being exploited ruthlessly by Ogogo. Ogogo clearly has secured

1:22:32 > 1:22:37his passage through to the second round. We await confirmation, but

1:22:37 > 1:22:44he has boxed beautifully in this contest against the man from the

1:22:44 > 1:22:49Dominican Republic, Junior Castillo. Andy Bell has sanded to bring about

1:22:49 > 1:22:53an end to that contest. Junior Castillo raised his arms, but I

1:22:53 > 1:22:59suspect it was hope rather than expectation, because the man in red,

1:22:59 > 1:23:02Anthony Ogogo, breaks out into a smile, because he and his coaching

1:23:02 > 1:23:12team feel he has done enough to earn his first win at the London

1:23:12 > 1:23:13

1:23:13 > 1:23:182012 Olympics. Ladies and gentlemen, the winner, by a score of 13 points

1:23:18 > 1:23:27to six, in the red corner, representing Great Britain, Anthony

1:23:27 > 1:23:31And watching were three of his sisters and his girlfriend. It has

1:23:31 > 1:23:35been a tough week for his family. His mum had a brain aneurysm six

1:23:35 > 1:23:39weeks ago and has been recovering in hospital after surgery. And this

1:23:39 > 1:23:43morning at 5am, one of Anthony's sisters went into hospital after

1:23:43 > 1:23:47going into early labour. After all you have been through,

1:23:47 > 1:23:53what was it like to be the first British boxer out here today?

1:23:53 > 1:24:01was great. I took the pressure of the whole team on myself and I am a

1:24:01 > 1:24:05bit of a showman. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be, and

1:24:05 > 1:24:10better. Do you fill extra responsibility, being the first box

1:24:10 > 1:24:15of them are old team? A bit. But I thrive under pressure, and I really

1:24:15 > 1:24:20enjoyed it. If I could have chosen it anyway, it would have been that

1:24:20 > 1:24:25way. And what about the support from family and friends? My family

1:24:25 > 1:24:28are going through the mill at the minute. My sister -- my mother is

1:24:28 > 1:24:33recovering from a serious injury in hospital. My sister is having a

1:24:33 > 1:24:39baby. But I had support from the rest of my friends, family and

1:24:39 > 1:24:45girlfriend. We are proud. How far can you go in this competition?

1:24:45 > 1:24:52have a tough draw. I have got the world champion next. If I will do

1:24:52 > 1:24:59my best to beat him. If I can get him, I can go all the way.

1:24:59 > 1:25:05In the men's bantamweight, Ireland's John Joe Nevin impressed

1:25:05 > 1:25:10and won easily, beating Denmark's Dennis Ceyland 21-6. Fellow

1:25:10 > 1:25:14countryman Darren O'Dea deal won pretty easily also in the men's 75

1:25:14 > 1:25:18kg middle-class, her head against the Nigerian.

1:25:18 > 1:25:22Almost 24 hours since half the world and 26 million of us in the

1:25:22 > 1:25:26UK witnessed the lighting of the Olympic flame, it burns brightly

1:25:26 > 1:25:29and looks magnificent. The scenes at Tower Bridge are pretty

1:25:29 > 1:25:35impressive, too. David Beckham was sailing along there yesterday,

1:25:35 > 1:25:37happily. And it still looks fantastic now, with the city in the

1:25:38 > 1:25:43background. I am the volleyball finished with a

1:25:43 > 1:25:48victory to the reigning Olympic champions, USA. That will please at

1:25:48 > 1:25:56least two of the icons on the sofa. You are on your way to another gold,

1:25:56 > 1:26:04guys. I did two features for NBC, Ryan Lochte and those two. So this

1:26:04 > 1:26:11is an awesome day. You need to work more. Go do some more interviews.

1:26:11 > 1:26:16Was that one of your moments of the day? It was, but the biggest one -

1:26:16 > 1:26:19a, you mean Ryan and Michael Phelps. That was the moment, because I was

1:26:19 > 1:26:23right there and the anticipation was awesome. It was your first time

1:26:23 > 1:26:27at Olympic swimming? Its was my first time at any event. Each day,

1:26:28 > 1:26:36I am going to a different one. Aren't you back at the swimming

1:26:36 > 1:26:40tomorrow? Just watching. Because you love it so much. My daughter

1:26:40 > 1:26:46loves equestrian. Rather hot tickets in town. You could go and

1:26:46 > 1:26:52see Mitt Romney's horse. For me, it was Lochte. He wants this to be his

1:26:52 > 1:27:01moment. It was great to see him. It was a phenomenal race. He destroyed

1:27:01 > 1:27:05the field. Don't say the same race? It was the men's gymnastics. The

1:27:05 > 1:27:09British team have done themselves proud. Not to put a dampener on

1:27:09 > 1:27:13things, but there is a bit of disappointing news for UK Athletics,

1:27:13 > 1:27:16because this speculation growing about Paula Radcliffe's Olympic

1:27:16 > 1:27:19jinx and whether that will continue. A national newspapers reporting

1:27:19 > 1:27:24that she is going to pull out and that an announcement will be made

1:27:24 > 1:27:30that she will pull out if the marathon due to an old injury that

1:27:30 > 1:27:35has flared up again with her foot. The head of Team GB said he could

1:27:35 > 1:27:41not confirm that, but it would be disappointing. Let's look at the

1:27:41 > 1:27:51medal table. Don't worry, we didn't get a medal at the end of the first

1:27:51 > 1:28:13

1:28:13 > 1:28:18Guys, it has been wonderful having you here. Will you come again?

1:28:18 > 1:28:22Absolutely. See you next time. Safe journey home. Enjoy that hotel with

1:28:23 > 1:28:27all those channels. That if your company and thank you at home for

1:28:27 > 1:28:30watching. Join us tomorrow. London has witnessed the wonder of the

1:28:30 > 1:28:34Olympics today dashed off gold medallists go to bed with a huge

1:28:34 > 1:28:38smile on their face. Others will wonder and wish for what could have

1:28:39 > 1:28:48been one moment, one time, one chance. That is the Olympic Games.

1:28:49 > 1:29:07

1:29:07 > 1:29:17A new sporting star in Brazil is born. A wonderful moment for Great

1:29:17 > 1:29:20
