:00:52. > :01:00.Here we are, then. The waiting is over. For seven years Brazil has

:01:01. > :01:04.been preparing, four years is since a party they all enjoyed in London

:01:05. > :01:10.and finally we can say, welcomed to Rio and the 2016 Olympic Games. And

:01:11. > :01:13.I'm glad to say the city is looking resplendent for you this morning.

:01:14. > :01:20.The iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in all its glory, and the

:01:21. > :01:26.sight of the Sugarloaf Mountain just next door, dominating the skyline

:01:27. > :01:38.above Copacabana Beach. You know that you're in Rio. 25 kilometres

:01:39. > :01:45.along the coast you find us, in the Rio limp the park for day one of the

:01:46. > :01:49.Olympics. Welcome one and all. There was a steady stream of people coming

:01:50. > :01:55.into the park this morning as we come into our very first taste of

:01:56. > :01:59.Olympic action. The temperature has already hit 25, 20 6 degrees. The

:02:00. > :02:09.perfect way to kick off our Olympics coverage. It is morning here, so,

:02:10. > :02:13.four hours ahead of where you are, we are just after nine o'clock in

:02:14. > :02:18.the morning. I will make sure to remind myself of that. This is going

:02:19. > :02:21.to be our home for the next two weeks or so on BBC Four. We will be

:02:22. > :02:26.bringing you the buzz of the Olympic Park every day. Thank you for

:02:27. > :02:34.staying with us, in advance. Let me show you around. Let's start with

:02:35. > :02:37.this red, yellow and orange number, the Olympic Tennis Centre, that is

:02:38. > :02:42.centre court where Andy Murray could be defending the Olympic title that

:02:43. > :02:48.he won back in 2012. We will talk about Andy Murray and a second. He

:02:49. > :02:54.had some business to do last night. This beige building over here is the

:02:55. > :02:57.Aquatic Centre. It is open air. Tom Bailey will be diving up there on

:02:58. > :03:00.his platform, enjoying the environment and whatever the weather

:03:01. > :03:08.is doing when he takes to the platform. -- Tom Bailey. And how

:03:09. > :03:18.about these three buildings that you can see? This is the karaoke arenas,

:03:19. > :03:21.basketball has the biggest one -- Carioca arenas. We will see

:03:22. > :03:28.taekwondo, Jade Jones, another Olympic champion, can she actually

:03:29. > :03:33.taekwondo gold that she got in 2012 's this place lights up later in the

:03:34. > :03:37.day. All of the venues do, so when Clare Balding is bringing you the

:03:38. > :03:42.latest action later, you will see it in all its twilight glory, including

:03:43. > :03:48.the main Olympics Aquatics Centre which is this shimmering, one over

:03:49. > :03:52.here. It will turn a luminous blue later on today. Look forward to that

:03:53. > :03:59.one. And before we finish the tour, I have got to show you the velodrome

:04:00. > :04:04.just here. Laura Trott will be a headline act in there, when that

:04:05. > :04:10.gets going in a few days' time. It is not the biggest Olympic Park. It

:04:11. > :04:14.is about half the size of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park we enjoyed in

:04:15. > :04:21.London 2012, but it is distinctive, nonetheless, and this is the Olympic

:04:22. > :04:25.Way down the centre of the park. We will try to show you around the park

:04:26. > :04:29.as much as we can during the programme. This place is only able

:04:30. > :04:33.to come to life after the opening ceremony last night. I am aware that

:04:34. > :04:37.it went late into the night for some of you back home, so if you missed

:04:38. > :04:43.it, here are the best bits from the Maracana Stadium. It was a festival

:04:44. > :04:48.of colour with dancing and costumes. And the country so famous for its

:04:49. > :04:52.rainforest, and lush, green trees, brought together to create the

:04:53. > :05:00.Olympic rings. What a sight that was. Team GB was led by Andy Murray,

:05:01. > :05:07.the reigning Olympic tennis champion, before the Olympic flame

:05:08. > :05:12.made its way in, denied Olympic gold in Athens 2004, he finally had

:05:13. > :05:18.another chance at glory. With the cauldron lit, the game -- the games

:05:19. > :05:24.officially began with a flurry of fireworks. You may know already --

:05:25. > :05:28.you may already know this but the Maracana as one of four Olympic zone

:05:29. > :05:32.is dotted around the city. As well as both ceremonies, the football

:05:33. > :05:37.finals will take place in the national stadium. Just next door is

:05:38. > :05:44.the other circular venue, the home of volleyball. There is the samba

:05:45. > :05:47.drone, an iconic location for the annual carnival in Rio. That has

:05:48. > :05:57.been transformed into an archery venue. Last but not least, the

:05:58. > :06:04.Olympic Stadium, were the stage is set for Usain Bolt to create yet

:06:05. > :06:09.more history. If we headed west, we find Copacabana Beach, arguably the

:06:10. > :06:12.most famous beach in the world, and right in the heart of it is that

:06:13. > :06:19.stunning venue. Where better to stage the beach volleyball? We had

:06:20. > :06:24.better get ourselves down there to the beach volleyball. That is going

:06:25. > :06:27.to be a popular spot. We're going to see road cycling and triathlon

:06:28. > :06:35.decided down on the coast as well. The rowing, the canoe sprint and the

:06:36. > :06:39.sailing are taking place amidst the familiar scenery around there. 20

:06:40. > :06:44.kilometres to the north, we find the third Olympic zone, home to the

:06:45. > :06:49.highest concentration of military personnel in Latin America. No big

:06:50. > :06:55.surprise that as well we will find the shooting centre. Rugby sevens

:06:56. > :07:04.and modern pentathlon will take place in the Diadora Stadium. And

:07:05. > :07:09.the Rio radical Park is where to go for all you adrenaline junkies. We

:07:10. > :07:22.will see BMX and slalom there. Last but not least, our spot, Baha. It

:07:23. > :07:28.has the arena that is home to the handball. Away from the park, we

:07:29. > :07:34.have our own very own beach in Baha, who needs Copacabana? B got 18

:07:35. > :07:41.kilometres orbit along the coast, including whether time trial is

:07:42. > :07:44.going to be staged. We have the brand-new Olympic golf course. We

:07:45. > :07:50.will see that in action from next week. It really is a big and

:07:51. > :07:55.beautiful place, Rio. I will try to show you as much of it as we can in

:07:56. > :07:59.the next fortnight. In the more immediate future, here is what is

:08:00. > :08:12.coming up on our very first programme of the games. We're

:08:13. > :08:20.kicking things off with Hungary against Serbia in water polo. There

:08:21. > :08:25.is an all European clash in the women's rugby sevens, France against

:08:26. > :08:33.Spain. We'll be live to the Diadora Stadium. India have a proud history

:08:34. > :08:40.in the hockey, worse for the Irish men it is a first Olympic appearance

:08:41. > :08:45.in over 100 years. Fresh from her Wimbledon mixed doubles title,

:08:46. > :08:52.Heather Watson starts Olympic singles campaign. And we're going to

:08:53. > :08:57.go back with the hockey because group a is going to be a tough test

:08:58. > :09:03.for Great Britain. An agonising fourth place in London 2012, and the

:09:04. > :09:08.campaign begins against Belgium. And it is the men's gymnastics

:09:09. > :09:16.qualification. Medals expected from Max Whitlock, Lewis Smith and

:09:17. > :09:21.company. No room for slip-ups today. Here is how the afternoon of day one

:09:22. > :09:25.is shaping up for you guys on BBC Four. We kick off with water polo,

:09:26. > :09:33.that is coming up shortly. Then the rugby sevens. We have a double dose

:09:34. > :09:36.of hockey. Sandwiched in the middle, we will see Heather Watson in the

:09:37. > :09:45.tennis, then we have the men's gymnastics. Matt Whittle -- Max

:09:46. > :09:54.Whitlock and Team GB. Then we have beach volleyball, shooting and

:09:55. > :09:58.swimming. The action has already started. Hazel and the team are

:09:59. > :10:02.showing the men's single sculls heats on BBC One. If you fancy that,

:10:03. > :10:08.that is the place to go. You can follow the rest of the action on the

:10:09. > :10:14.Red Button, the BBC sport website or you can stay with us on BBC Four.

:10:15. > :10:18.So, make your choice. And make the right choice. Thank you very much.

:10:19. > :10:23.Now you know where everything is and what is in store, here are the many

:10:24. > :10:36.ways you can follow Rio 2016 on the BBC. To help you make even more of

:10:37. > :10:40.the Rio 2016 Olympic Games from boxing to badminton, potty to

:10:41. > :10:46.handball, we have it all covered on the BBC. Alongside coverage on BBC

:10:47. > :10:52.One, BBC Four and Radio 5Live, you can access 24 live sports on the BBC

:10:53. > :10:57.sport website or on the BBC sport app on mobile and connected TV. The

:10:58. > :11:04.best of these will be available on the Red Button. If that is not

:11:05. > :11:09.enough, you can download the BBC sport app and set up news and medal

:11:10. > :11:16.alerts and reminders so that you can follow all of your favourite sports.

:11:17. > :11:19.So now you know. We will kick off coverage with the water polo. The

:11:20. > :11:25.finals of which will take place in the Olympics Aquatics Centre that I

:11:26. > :11:29.showed you. This week it is packed with swimming, the heats of which

:11:30. > :11:36.are starting in about four hours' time. We're going to kick things off

:11:37. > :11:40.over here at the Maria Lake Aquatics Centre for a grudge match between

:11:41. > :11:51.two water polo heavyweights. Before we get to the action, here is a

:11:52. > :11:57.little guide to the sport. Water polo has been an Olympic sport since

:11:58. > :12:01.1900 in Paris. There are seven players in each team, six so-called

:12:02. > :12:06.outfield players and a goalkeeper. They are allowed six reserves and

:12:07. > :12:10.unlimited substitutions. Substitutes are crucial because of the gruelling

:12:11. > :12:14.nature of the sport. The players are not allowed to touch the bottom of

:12:15. > :12:19.the pool during the match at any point. They have two state upright

:12:20. > :12:24.and ready by keeping the legs moving backwards and forwards in what is

:12:25. > :12:27.known as the eggbeater motion. There are two important lines, the two

:12:28. > :12:31.metre line and a five metre line. The two metre line is two metres

:12:32. > :12:34.from the goal and the attacking team are not allowed to pass it unless

:12:35. > :12:38.they have possession of the ball or it is already in that area. If an

:12:39. > :12:42.attacking players fouled within five metres of the goal, the referee can

:12:43. > :12:47.award a penalty shot from the five metre line. If the file is committed

:12:48. > :12:51.further out than five metres, a free-throw is awarded. Goalkeepers

:12:52. > :12:56.can use two hands at once but outfield players can only use one

:12:57. > :12:59.hand at the time. The game is split into four quarters of eight minutes

:13:00. > :13:04.and although the total playing time is 32 minutes, the game usually

:13:05. > :13:08.lasts for over an hour, because it is stopped and started regularly.

:13:09. > :13:12.Each quarter begins with the times lean -- the teams lined up on the

:13:13. > :13:17.goal lines and when the referee blows the whistle, they sprint

:13:18. > :13:20.towards centre of the pool. A shot clock controls time for shooting

:13:21. > :13:27.because when in possession teams only have 30 seconds to shoot at

:13:28. > :13:31.all. It is not a sport for the thing parted or anyone who is not good at

:13:32. > :13:36.swimming. There are spectators making the way down to the Aquatic

:13:37. > :13:41.Centre. They are getting themselves into position for this match. Water

:13:42. > :13:46.polo is important in mainland Europe and North America. And Ollie

:13:47. > :13:53.Williams has jetted into join us from there. Would you say that the

:13:54. > :13:59.temperature or the scenery is the biggest thing 's look at these

:14:00. > :14:04.hills. It is really good. You know your stuff about water polo. Hungary

:14:05. > :14:08.and Serbia will not pull any punches. It is vicious under the

:14:09. > :14:13.water. It is a vicious sport to begin with. There is track cycling

:14:14. > :14:17.on the opening morning and it was Britain and Australia, that would be

:14:18. > :14:23.setting the tone of the Olympics for both of those teams. And water polo

:14:24. > :14:26.is track cycling for Hungary. It is track cycling for Serbia, they have

:14:27. > :14:31.won just about everything since 2013. All the rest of the athletes

:14:32. > :14:37.are watching back in the Olympics village, and it will set the tone

:14:38. > :14:40.for those entire teams. It could be like a wild West shoot out. This

:14:41. > :14:46.could be the final, that we are about to watch. Let's have a look at

:14:47. > :14:51.the groups. We have 12 teams in the men's competition. Group A, Group B,

:14:52. > :14:56.six teams in each, the top four automatically progress. If we have a

:14:57. > :15:04.look at group A, that is where we find Serbia and Hungary. Hungary,

:15:05. > :15:07.the 15th medals and Olympic competition, the most successful in

:15:08. > :15:08.the history of this sport, and Serbia have won everything there is

:15:09. > :15:19.to win in the last few years. You look at the other teams, pick

:15:20. > :15:23.out maybe Croatia, the champions in 2012. The USA were dark horses in

:15:24. > :15:29.the past, have done quite well at a couple of Olympics. Brazil are now

:15:30. > :15:33.coached by a man who has won Olympic titles with three different teams

:15:34. > :15:37.before. There are maybe eight or nine teams who stand a realistic

:15:38. > :15:43.chance of winning. Let's talk about Hungary. You talk about all those

:15:44. > :15:46.successes over the years. The World Championship is decided by the world

:15:47. > :15:51.league. They missed out on the top eight, but only just. They want to

:15:52. > :15:55.get themselves back on the top of the roster. Yes, the world league is

:15:56. > :16:01.difficult to predict sometimes, who wins it changes year-on-year. It is

:16:02. > :16:04.not necessarily the absolute and end all, but Hungary, bread team that

:16:05. > :16:07.won Olympics won Olympics after Olympics after Olympics, to get

:16:08. > :16:12.nothing at London 2012 is a big disaster. They need to put that

:16:13. > :16:16.right, starting this morning. Starting this afternoon for you back

:16:17. > :16:20.home. They have already started. Action got underway at about 9am our

:16:21. > :16:26.morning and this is exactly what happened. It was Hungary who went

:16:27. > :16:35.ahead first in the opening stages of the game. Serbia were not far

:16:36. > :16:40.behind. Hungary came back to take the lead once again before Serbia...

:16:41. > :16:45.It is end to end stuff. It is told to tone, blow for blow. Serbia

:16:46. > :16:50.equalised, got the fourth goal, before Hungary went ahead once again

:16:51. > :16:56.to make it 3-2. Serbia equalised again, they said it would be tight.

:16:57. > :17:02.At the moment, the score is Hungary leading 5-3. We talked about scores

:17:03. > :17:09.to settle. Shall we go to the second quarter? I think we will. Let's head

:17:10. > :17:15.into the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre now and see exactly what is going on

:17:16. > :17:18.right now. The sun is shimmering of that open-air arena. We can see the

:17:19. > :17:24.water. We will see plenty more water polo throughout the day. But we can

:17:25. > :17:26.hand over for the end of the first quarter and going into the second

:17:27. > :17:42.quarter. Will the Hungarians use the

:17:43. > :17:47.remainder to try to control the clock? The seconds will count down.

:17:48. > :17:53.That will be the end of the first period. I save right at the end. It

:17:54. > :17:56.is a long effort in and the Serbians find themselves down by two to

:17:57. > :19:02.Hungary after the first eight minutes of play.

:19:03. > :19:12.And there you see the concentration coming in from the Serbians as they

:19:13. > :19:19.listen to their coach. They will have not expected this, but no route

:19:20. > :19:23.to an Olympic medal will be an easy one. Serbia know that for sure. They

:19:24. > :19:29.have had so much success in the last Olympic cycle. Currently the

:19:30. > :19:33.champions of six of the seven major titles in that time. Probably one of

:19:34. > :19:37.the most noticeable ones or most notable ones, probably, is the win

:19:38. > :19:41.at home in Belgrade. That was earlier this year, they became

:19:42. > :19:47.European champions. The pressure from Serbia is immense. The

:19:48. > :19:52.expectation of gold in Rio is at the highest of possibly any of the

:19:53. > :19:58.teams, of any of the sports. Serbia are expected to be able to come here

:19:59. > :20:11.and get a medal, but Hungary have them on the ropes as we prepare for

:20:12. > :20:16.the second period. And they will take off in the blue helmets, that

:20:17. > :20:22.is Hungary. What a great shot to show you just the force in the pool

:20:23. > :20:25.as it is locked and won again. So key IDs possessions. There are not a

:20:26. > :20:31.great amount of them back and forth and if you control the ball well and

:20:32. > :20:35.win them at those opening swims, it is a big part of controlling the

:20:36. > :20:39.outcome of a match. Still going in the same direction, left to right,

:20:40. > :20:44.Hungary are in the blue helmets. And in defence, White helmets, Serbia.

:20:45. > :20:55.Hungary are looking to double the score line. The whistle comes in and

:20:56. > :20:58.the Serbians with the infra action leading to the exclusion. Hungary by

:20:59. > :21:15.feeling their moment. The goal post is the goalkeeper's

:21:16. > :21:20.best friend in this instance. You see the excitement there and the

:21:21. > :21:34.pleasure from the Serbian as he gets the benefit.

:21:35. > :21:49.A big part of a momentum shift, potentially. The whistle comes in.

:21:50. > :21:57.The extra man in the pool... For Serbia, a little bit of a change of

:21:58. > :22:01.pace. Defeat to the outside. Awaiting the perfect opportunity.

:22:02. > :22:11.The whistle extensively coming in from the official. They will have a

:22:12. > :22:23.real significant advantage, Serbia. They have six players against four.

:22:24. > :22:32.Serbia are waiting too long and will run out of time. What a defensive

:22:33. > :22:35.stance from Hungary! Two players down and just coming back into the

:22:36. > :22:37.field of play. They did enough to force the shops up and over the top

:22:38. > :22:51.of goal. -- forced the shot. Two minutes gone already in the

:22:52. > :23:01.second period and they get another look at it, Hungary, to try to

:23:02. > :23:03.double the scoreline. They don't waste any time, it is a good tactic,

:23:04. > :23:17.but only if it is accurate. Serbia have been a little bit

:23:18. > :23:25.wasteful as yet. Can they be more purposeful here?

:23:26. > :23:35.Serbia retain control, trying to draw it if they can. A whip into the

:23:36. > :23:36.back of goal, they needed that as much as any they have taken thus

:23:37. > :23:52.far. The goalkeeper beaten cleanly with

:23:53. > :24:07.the shot from the Serbian, bringing this match within one.

:24:08. > :24:17.The clinical strike from He gets the first goal of his

:24:18. > :24:32.Olympic Games in Rio. From the outside, a lot of pressure

:24:33. > :24:40.being applied by the Serbians against the Hungarians in fence --

:24:41. > :24:45.offence. These positions are ever telling.

:24:46. > :24:56.Hungary have had the chance to be three goals up twice. They have been

:24:57. > :25:01.unable to take the chance. You see the dishevelled look of the centre

:25:02. > :25:02.forward, trying to get into a favourable position to shoot. They

:25:03. > :25:27.were going to have none of it. Balazs Harai has the five metre

:25:28. > :25:36.shot. Waiting for the whistle from the official.

:25:37. > :25:41.And finish there is ever precise for Hungary and they have got themselves

:25:42. > :25:48.that two goal margin again. Daniel Varga got the goal. 32 years

:25:49. > :26:21.of age. Hungarians get the exclusion. Serbia

:26:22. > :26:27.need to really continue just to keep pace and keep this game tight. Wait

:26:28. > :26:33.for their chance at another pocket or passage of play. It is the

:26:34. > :26:39.Hungarians again that are ever resilient. They are staunch in

:26:40. > :26:43.defence again. It is led by their emotional leader in the back there.

:26:44. > :27:03.The defence did the work. Here are now the Hungarians in blue.

:27:04. > :27:23.Just trying to deceive and open up a shooting lane.

:27:24. > :27:35.Hungary Airways now from goal. Putting it into an area for them to

:27:36. > :27:40.be able to retain, drawing out the Serbian defence inside of 20 seconds

:27:41. > :27:44.on the shot clock. We are at the halfway point of the second period

:27:45. > :27:47.and they still hold that two goal margin. Can they stretch it, though,

:27:48. > :28:03.to a third? That was an easy deflection for

:28:04. > :28:10.Mitrovic. The Hungarians retain the opportunity to reload.

:28:11. > :28:20.Good control from Hungary in this offensive sequence. Trying to tire

:28:21. > :28:24.out the defence if they can, of Serbia, and tried to establish

:28:25. > :28:29.control in this match. So many one-on-one battles going on in this

:28:30. > :28:30.half of the pool. Serbia again having to really assert themselves,

:28:31. > :28:52.trying to force the issue. Mitrovic was good enough to make the

:28:53. > :29:03.save. Some great ball movement here from

:29:04. > :29:21.Serbia. Looking more continuous in their offensive momentum.

:29:22. > :29:24.You could see how engaged Hosnyanszky was emotionally from the

:29:25. > :29:36.start of the match. Serbia with another great save. The

:29:37. > :29:51.Hungarians cannot get that third goal advantage.

:29:52. > :30:09.Mitrovic has done a great job. Awaiting a restart.

:30:10. > :30:23.He has received his helmet back, to put it on. That is the Hungarian

:30:24. > :30:24.Centre forward, Balazs Harai. He gets himself reloaded, thank you,

:30:25. > :30:28.sir. What can Hungary do? Serbia have won everything there is

:30:29. > :30:40.to win in the last few years. Tremendous struggle going on off the

:30:41. > :30:47.ball. The officials keeping a close watch on map. So much part of the

:30:48. > :30:50.subtlety of this will be that the Hungarian 's will come forward,

:30:51. > :30:55.Serbia relenting a little bit, giving some more space which the

:30:56. > :31:02.Hungarian striker sees, what a shot and what a delightful finish, a

:31:03. > :31:08.scorcher, of the post and in, Krisztian Manhercz has opened up a

:31:09. > :31:12.3-goal advantage for Hungary. And that great finish of the post and in

:31:13. > :31:20.from long range. It was like a SCUD missile. And the Serbians have

:31:21. > :31:37.fallen back by three goals now. The Hungarian 's are loving it. -- the

:31:38. > :31:47.Hungarians. One shot, one goal, that is the way they draw it up ahead of

:31:48. > :31:51.the match. Ever efficient, a big part of the success so far from the

:31:52. > :31:56.Hungarian is, very resilient defensively. They have done their

:31:57. > :32:00.best to try to keep all of the men in the pool as well. There is a real

:32:01. > :32:09.struggle going on in that Serbian defence of half. Beat in, look at

:32:10. > :32:16.that, and the tall, elevated lofted pass, and there is no time wasted as

:32:17. > :32:22.the strong hand, he will just take that and pound it down past Nagy.

:32:23. > :32:49.And the Serbians back in it, too. Working from the off side, the

:32:50. > :32:55.Hungarian 's. They have given up this position. They know that is

:32:56. > :33:12.crucial. The Hungarian coach, looking on. Tibor Benedict with a

:33:13. > :33:19.great move. The Hungarians execute a great defensive sequence. Nagy. A

:33:20. > :33:26.minute remaining in this first half. The Hungarians again questing to

:33:27. > :33:34.re-establish that three goal margin. They just force that right through.

:33:35. > :33:42.That is absolutely destroying, to come forward and finished with such

:33:43. > :33:45.precision. Gergo Zalanki comes straight at the Serbian defence and

:33:46. > :33:56.just busts it right through the hands. There can be nothing done on

:33:57. > :34:11.that play to stop the shot. Nothing to be done by Mitrovic, and he knows

:34:12. > :34:16.it, as he looks skyward. Gergo Zalanki, with his first goal. Of

:34:17. > :34:26.these Olympic Games in Rio. Inside this last-minute. It will be a power

:34:27. > :34:37.play. They need to take advantage here, Serbia. It is going to be a

:34:38. > :34:46.time-out, as called by the Serbian coach to stop this possession. He

:34:47. > :34:52.wants to make sure that his side is clear on exactly what the game plan

:34:53. > :35:00.is. They need to try and strike to bring this within two. The

:35:01. > :35:05.Hungarians have been very efficient. They stay poised, and this is a

:35:06. > :35:15.reminder to his Serbian side, now urged on by their team-mates. One

:35:16. > :35:19.time-out apiece taken so far. Welcome, wherever you are watching,

:35:20. > :35:44.to Rio, and this Aquatic Centre. It will be Serbia in the White with

:35:45. > :35:51.the blue trim looking for a shot. Trying to anticipate again, Serbia

:35:52. > :35:59.looking a little hesitant, and that is a ripping delivery from Dusan

:36:00. > :36:04.Mandic, takes all that possession and the left-handed strike is

:36:05. > :36:12.lethal, across the face of goal, and Nagy can hardly even move. It

:36:13. > :36:22.whistles like past. Bringing this match within touching distance.

:36:23. > :36:35.Tremendous velocity and perfect placement. The Hungarian is now with

:36:36. > :36:42.21 seconds remaining in the half, using an opportunity to try and

:36:43. > :36:46.reassert that three goal margin. He will know, he's a man of experience,

:36:47. > :36:57.he has been there and done it himself. The importance of that

:36:58. > :37:04.third goal, with a three possession swing and in water polo, that is

:37:05. > :37:05.quite a bit, at world-class level. For the Serbians to try and

:37:06. > :37:22.overcome. It is back in, Hungary are waiting,

:37:23. > :37:32.the shot clock is synchronised with the game clock now. The waiting time

:37:33. > :37:38.is their enemy, though. The Serbians are doing enough. Can they get a

:37:39. > :37:45.shot of any significance? And what a comeback from Hungary, the

:37:46. > :37:49.management of the clock is divine, and the finish, they could not have

:37:50. > :37:55.executed any better than their coach would have wanted. That is a moment

:37:56. > :38:03.of real class. Just to feed it in, and the off-load as it is forced

:38:04. > :38:12.across the line. And you see the Hungarian is executing a game plan.

:38:13. > :38:17.That from Decker has brought this match to a 3- goal advantage for the

:38:18. > :38:26.Hungarians. What a first half of play it has been. The Hungarian 's

:38:27. > :38:33.have found themselves in front, 9-6. It really has been a great game so

:38:34. > :38:38.far. Hungary leading by nine goals to six and went toe to toe in that

:38:39. > :38:42.first half, with the Hungarian is asserting themselves from the end of

:38:43. > :38:46.the first half. We spoke about this being a real grudge match, one that

:38:47. > :38:52.could be the final, and it has not disappointed so far. It hasn't. In

:38:53. > :38:58.the build-up to this, Hungary have not performed so well over the last

:38:59. > :39:01.couple of years and they have dampened expectations. They have

:39:02. > :39:05.said, we are not the favourites, we are not the favourites, but it is

:39:06. > :39:08.like Manchester City and Manchester United saying, we are not their

:39:09. > :39:13.babies, but they have got a pretty good chance of winning this. Look at

:39:14. > :39:17.how they have come out of the blocks in this game. This is a fantastic

:39:18. > :39:22.game to watch. You can feel the intensity coming off it. It is

:39:23. > :39:27.intense. We were talking about how hard it is because they have got to

:39:28. > :39:31.keep themselves afloat. They get a foul, if they touch the bottom or

:39:32. > :39:36.the size. It is the eggbeater kick motion that keeps you up right all

:39:37. > :39:40.the time. If you are the goalkeeper you are keeping yourself afloat the

:39:41. > :39:46.whole time then you have to have the athleticism to lunge in any given

:39:47. > :39:50.direction. There is a strategic element as well, you have to be

:39:51. > :39:53.thinking whilst you're doing this. They are moving the ball around the

:39:54. > :40:01.whole time. The defensive aspect is to block any angle on a shot. It is

:40:02. > :40:05.like a chess match sometimes. They are being punched and kicked

:40:06. > :40:11.underwater all the way through! That is just the game of water polo. And

:40:12. > :40:18.you mention the athleticism. Let's look at the 11th goal of the match

:40:19. > :40:23.scored by Krisztian Manhercz. And you see how much power they can

:40:24. > :40:28.generate in the arm. It is that kind of shot. The goalkeeper has been

:40:29. > :40:34.relatively good in this game so far. But look at a shot like that. When

:40:35. > :40:39.you are watching this sport, look for anticipation from people.

:40:40. > :40:42.Certainly, in some of the other girls we saw, players move

:40:43. > :40:47.fractionally before you spot what they are too. They are so skilled at

:40:48. > :40:54.this level, you have to move and anticipate so much in environment.

:40:55. > :40:57.We have an idea of what it means to Hungary. They may be playing it down

:40:58. > :41:06.but they cannot hide their emotions all the time. 60 years ago, they had

:41:07. > :41:11.one of the most iconic games in the Olympics, didn't they, against the

:41:12. > :41:16.old soviet union in the final. It was cold blood in the weather.

:41:17. > :41:22.Quentin Tarantino made a documentary about this. Blood in the water was

:41:23. > :41:26.the Melbourne 9056 Olympics. What happened was, Hungary played a

:41:27. > :41:29.soviet union in the middle of the Hungarian revolution that was

:41:30. > :41:33.happening back home for the Hungarian is against the Soviet

:41:34. > :41:39.Union. It was an incredible, politically charged game. It was

:41:40. > :41:43.violent. You had players back there, that is one of the top Hungarian

:41:44. > :41:46.players. You can see the blood coming down his face from a punch

:41:47. > :41:52.from the Soviet player he was marking. After that they called off

:41:53. > :41:58.the game with a minute to go because it was so violent, the fans and

:41:59. > :42:02.players were attacking each other. Hungary won the gameplay - zero.

:42:03. > :42:07.Half of the Hungarian team could not go home and sought asylum in the US,

:42:08. > :42:13.including the man with a blood coming down. He went on in the US to

:42:14. > :42:18.become the coach of Mark Spitz, one of the greatest Olympians of all

:42:19. > :42:27.time. Fascinating story. It sounds a bit 18- rated that one in 1956.

:42:28. > :42:31.Thankfully, this is a bit more PG13. Let's see what is going on on BBC

:42:32. > :42:36.One right now. They have got wall-to-wall coverage of Rio like

:42:37. > :42:41.ourselves, and right now they are featuring the men's road race. Chris

:42:42. > :42:45.Froome, three times Tour de France champion, he's trying to add to what

:42:46. > :42:53.was a bronze medal that he won in a time trial in London 2012. He has

:42:54. > :42:59.told us that that course there is tough, really tough. Next up on BBC

:43:00. > :43:05.One, we will see Ashley McKenzie, the Commonwealth judo champion in

:43:06. > :43:13.the 60 kilograms category taking to the mat for his first bout of the

:43:14. > :43:17.games. But, if you choose to stay with us on BBC Four, thank you very

:43:18. > :43:22.much indeed. We will try to keep you up-to-date with as much of the

:43:23. > :43:27.action as possible over the course of our programme. We are going to

:43:28. > :43:30.head back into the beige loading, the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre for

:43:31. > :43:37.the second half of Serbia against Hungary. It is not having six as we

:43:38. > :43:41.start the second half. So let's handover to commentator.

:43:42. > :43:52.This will be Hungary moving from right to left. And an opportunity,

:43:53. > :43:59.one more time. They are not wasting any time. We've all strike from

:44:00. > :44:08.Norbert Hosnyanszky. How the light that? -- lethal strike, how do you

:44:09. > :44:19.like that? You can see the acknowledgement from the Serbian

:44:20. > :44:26.Inderal. He was beaten quickly, and there was nothing he could have done

:44:27. > :44:29.about that one, Slobodan Nikic. That is a momentum shift. Without doubt,

:44:30. > :44:41.it was in favour of Hungary as it was in that late strike from Kis at

:44:42. > :44:46.the end of the first half, book ending each half for Hungary. And

:44:47. > :44:56.they have been great defensively. The hand going up. It is lofted

:44:57. > :45:05.beyond the confines and the official waiting for the ball to be brought

:45:06. > :45:07.back in. Just getting away from the Serbian. And Hungary are looking

:45:08. > :45:24.more and more comfortable. Very subtle, these battles that go

:45:25. > :45:36.on. Just trying to win favour in the call.

:45:37. > :45:56.Gets himself involved in the match, Nikic.

:45:57. > :46:02.The feed is central, that has been a dangerous area. They have drawn the

:46:03. > :46:15.exclusion against Serbia. The quick play and the feed is in

:46:16. > :46:34.and it is pounced on. The delivery is right on the mark.

:46:35. > :46:51.This game is kept within touch now. Back within three.

:46:52. > :46:59.He thought he was coming off for a substitution, but he will remain.

:47:00. > :47:09.Works to get back into a centre defence position there.

:47:10. > :47:34.Hungary are in all blue as they come forward.

:47:35. > :47:47.Quick shot, but the save is made just off the post. It will return to

:47:48. > :48:06.Hungary. Conquer it looking as comfortable as

:48:07. > :48:12.they have in this match so far. We will have to do reload. Inside of 15

:48:13. > :48:15.seconds and just ten seconds remaining now. They will need to

:48:16. > :48:25.work quickly. They were able to do that at the end of the first half.

:48:26. > :48:47.Pijetlovic settled that one down. It is a major foul.

:48:48. > :48:55.Serbia just off-loading and toying with his Hungarian defence, but they

:48:56. > :48:58.are stripped of the ball. What looked to be the moment of truth in

:48:59. > :49:03.front where they were going to release the shot, and they have

:49:04. > :49:09.given it up, quite cheaply, really. Hungary looked really strong for

:49:10. > :49:23.their lead. It is not a fluke by any stretch of imagination.

:49:24. > :49:27.The save their made by the left hand of Pijetlovic. It settle things down

:49:28. > :49:34.for his side. It was labelled for the inside of

:49:35. > :49:57.the right post. It is advantage play for Hungary.

:49:58. > :50:03.Serbia sensing an opportunity to try to win it back, but they will have

:50:04. > :50:08.to relent. Still anticipating the shot.

:50:09. > :50:17.It is that play from behind that is the quick whistle. Pijetlovic has

:50:18. > :50:19.the support of his men back into play, and what a save he makes. He

:50:20. > :50:32.was in a good position. It was his right arm this time. He

:50:33. > :50:46.will get himself recorded with another save. He has been strong.

:50:47. > :50:54.This, a chance to bring it within two. Serbia really need to make a

:50:55. > :51:05.Right now in this third period. What a shot! It sizzled in from the left

:51:06. > :51:07.hand of their number ten forward. That is Filipovic with the strike of

:51:08. > :51:16.delivery towards the goal. Just what the doctor ordered for the

:51:17. > :51:25.Serbians. This is a game that is changing.

:51:26. > :51:33.That literally just blew the left-hand right past with the force

:51:34. > :51:46.of the ball into the back of the Hungarian goal.

:51:47. > :51:55.Filipovic a real linchpin in this one.

:51:56. > :52:05.His second goal of the match. An opportunity now for the Hungarians

:52:06. > :52:17.to start to be a little more strategic with a substitution. This

:52:18. > :52:26.is getting into maybe a little bit of the tactical stage of the match.

:52:27. > :52:32.It looked that way when it was four goals, the difference, but now back

:52:33. > :52:41.to two. Filipovic looks for his best option to try to move it forward. He

:52:42. > :52:47.has been patient. His team have now re-established themselves in the

:52:48. > :53:05.offensive half of the field of play. The Serbians now looking encouraged.

:53:06. > :53:13.Nagy did not need to make the save. The goal frame was wide enough to

:53:14. > :53:17.keep that at bay. Each of these sequences up and back are very

:53:18. > :53:30.instrumental in the final tally at the end of 32 minutes.

:53:31. > :53:34.Back and forth, the appealing from the Hungarian coach and the exhale

:53:35. > :53:46.of delight from the Serbian in goal. From the outside! Look at the divine

:53:47. > :54:12.strike of the Serbian attack. It was a long range delivery. Cuk

:54:13. > :54:15.has absolutely delivered a most impacting strike was Serbia. They

:54:16. > :54:25.are within one and the game is changing. Milos Cuk has got his side

:54:26. > :54:35.right within touching distance. This is a test for certain of the

:54:36. > :55:05.mettle that the Hungarians have. Do they -- can they take the pressure?

:55:06. > :55:12.They will have the benefit of an extra player and there will now be a

:55:13. > :55:18.time-out called by the Hungarians. They will reload and discuss their

:55:19. > :55:53.approach in the remaining portion of this third period.

:55:54. > :56:06.Three-time Olympic gold medallist, Benedek. Leader of this team. This

:56:07. > :56:11.is a sequence for Hungary in the open match of these real Olympics,

:56:12. > :56:17.where they really need to be able to execute their game plan -- Rio

:56:18. > :56:20.Olympics. A little bit of sunshine is coming across the water at the

:56:21. > :56:38.Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio. Inside the last minutes, you know

:56:39. > :56:44.when you see it there that that was a plan that didn't quite get done.

:56:45. > :56:57.Everything in preparation for this shot was on the mark, but that is

:56:58. > :57:01.heads up water polo. Now a time-out is called by the Serbians. They will

:57:02. > :57:05.take advantage of a chance here to get back level and they have not

:57:06. > :57:14.been level since the early stages of this match. They fell down quickly

:57:15. > :57:24.with that opening sequence and this now is a challenge for Hungary. They

:57:25. > :57:28.have enjoyed the spoils of being in a strong position throughout the

:57:29. > :57:41.entirety of this match. What will be the story of this possession?

:57:42. > :57:59.It was a quick possession and it was taken by Svivos to open up the

:58:00. > :58:04.scoring. Serbia have been in the Trail in this match ever since. They

:58:05. > :58:10.have a chance to level. They will await a good shot.

:58:11. > :58:18.That effort was not quite potent enough, it just goes over the

:58:19. > :58:25.crossbar and beyond it will beat Hungary trying to counter attack

:58:26. > :58:28.late in this third period. They spin out of the defensive force of

:58:29. > :58:33.Serbia, and have drawn the exclusion.

:58:34. > :58:39.They took advantage. Hungary will take control once again and it is an

:58:40. > :59:11.offensive strike. It means everything. The Hungarians

:59:12. > :59:17.know it. Precious seconds counting down it has been turned over. The

:59:18. > :59:29.whistle is blown. The official wanting to reassert that it is going

:59:30. > :59:33.to be Nagy that will give it up. What a story to tell. A lead coming

:59:34. > :59:44.into that second half almost evaporates for Hungary, but in the

:59:45. > :59:49.end that important goal. ORE ODUBA: so, Hungary leading by 11 goals to

:59:50. > :59:52.nine against Serbia who have just one more eight minute period to go

:59:53. > :59:58.to try to close that gap or even go one ahead. This is a great way to

:59:59. > :00:04.kick off our Olympics coverage, isn't it? A real batch. Absolutely.

:00:05. > :00:09.In the middle of that game, he said this will tie the Hungarian resolve,

:00:10. > :00:12.the way Serbia came back. They closed it back down to one and then

:00:13. > :00:16.you saw Hungary proved they have that resolve. The second time into

:00:17. > :00:20.quarters that Hungary have come and got a goal with seconds left and

:00:21. > :00:23.just opened that gap up again a little bit. Other teams in this

:00:24. > :00:26.tournament will beware in best thinking to themselves, this is

:00:27. > :00:30.great, this is exactly what we wanted. These two, seven bells out

:00:31. > :00:34.of each other in the first game of the tournament might make our lives

:00:35. > :00:38.easier. Croatia and the USA are playing next, both looking for

:00:39. > :00:43.medals. The longer this goes on, the tougher it is for them, the easier

:00:44. > :00:44.for us. You've been really impressed with the goalkeeping in a

:00:45. > :00:56.high-scoring game. It is such a tough sport to be a

:00:57. > :01:01.goalkeeper in. The athleticism that you need, there is so much going on

:01:02. > :01:05.around you, your movement is restricted, it is physical, and

:01:06. > :01:09.sometimes you just get a bit lucky. It is all about positioning. If it

:01:10. > :01:14.goes off your head and you didn't see it coming, it is still not then

:01:15. > :01:19.the back of the net. Whatever it works, just get in the way of the

:01:20. > :01:24.ball. We will be back with the fourth-quarter quickly. Let's update

:01:25. > :01:27.you with what has been going on in the rowing and the men's single

:01:28. > :01:33.sculls because Alan Campbell of Great Britain has been going in

:01:34. > :01:43.that, he did well, qualified third fastest in his heat, meanwhile, the

:01:44. > :01:48.reigning champion, Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand, qualified in first

:01:49. > :01:56.place. We can go back to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre with Hungary

:01:57. > :02:09.leading Serbia 11-9 in the water polo, and we rejoin Brent.

:02:10. > :02:17.That is a small thing that counts for so much at the end of the match.

:02:18. > :02:26.And with all things are the difference at world-class level --

:02:27. > :02:31.little things. They retain it, they cannot shoot it as yet. One more

:02:32. > :02:37.time and there is an almighty struggle right in front of the

:02:38. > :02:50.Serbian goal, and Serbia win it back. What a powerhouse of force

:02:51. > :02:58.there. There is Mandic, defensively, doing an outstanding job against the

:02:59. > :03:03.Hungarian forwards. The exclusion, the grasping on the back of the

:03:04. > :03:08.player leading to the man advantage for Serbia, can they come back

:03:09. > :03:13.within one? What a strike, as the Serbian pounce when given the

:03:14. > :03:20.opportunity. Slobodan Nikic will Bolli that one, one-handed, into the

:03:21. > :03:29.Hungarian gall, and all sorts of struggle. And the finish is richer

:03:30. > :03:33.perfect, on the money. -- the Hungarian goal. That is the answer

:03:34. > :03:42.to the late goal at the end of the third period. His first goal of

:03:43. > :03:48.these Rio Olympics. And this has every chance of going either way,

:03:49. > :04:00.still. It is a wrestling match, isn't it? It is nothing short of it.

:04:01. > :04:11.When and how will the shot come? Those are the only questions. 20

:04:12. > :04:17.seconds on the scoring clock. To the outside, and they've scored,

:04:18. > :04:26.Hungary, again, very comfortable with their captain, Denes Varga, the

:04:27. > :04:31.29-year-old, delighted with his tally, and jubilant in celebration.

:04:32. > :04:35.It is all happening in front. Hungarian with just enough strength

:04:36. > :04:57.to keep control, and there was nothing that Pijetlovic could do

:04:58. > :05:01.about that shot. This was no fluke. Hungary have scored first and they

:05:02. > :05:13.have scored often. Saved again by the Hungarian is, and Nagy

:05:14. > :05:21.encourages his team on. An emotional leader. And his team now all return

:05:22. > :05:30.to offensive positions. This is the swing point, isn't it, to be able to

:05:31. > :05:43.take the lead, three points. And the whistle in favour of Serbia. They

:05:44. > :05:49.will take control of this ball. And all of the work, each stroke to get

:05:50. > :05:55.back into an area into which best to defend. The Serbians need to

:05:56. > :06:09.restructure and try to get into a better formation offensively. The

:06:10. > :06:14.Hungarians penalised. Norbert Hosnyanszky has scored a couple of

:06:15. > :06:19.key goals. Look at that goal, and the Serbians are still right on the

:06:20. > :06:30.doorstep. Just crashed into the back of the goal of Nagy, and he cannot

:06:31. > :06:36.extend to reach to that. That was like a judo Chop across the back

:06:37. > :06:47.from the Serbian, and a perfect delivery.

:06:48. > :07:04.But was Milos Cuk, getting the credit for that one.

:07:05. > :07:12.It is Nikic who gets the record of the goal for Serbia. They are within

:07:13. > :07:19.one and five minutes remaining in this half. You will see every trick

:07:20. > :07:31.in the book from both of these sides to retain advantage, or to try and

:07:32. > :07:34.regain it. Hungary, from the outside with that man advantage, they are in

:07:35. > :07:41.a great position to shoot, they elect not to, they will be patient

:07:42. > :07:49.and use this shot clock as much as the game clock. It is denied, and

:07:50. > :07:58.the Serbians retain control. Coming back into the pool, you sense a

:07:59. > :08:01.little bit of a momentum change. Pijetlovic just gets enough, the

:08:02. > :08:12.fingertip touch the elevate the ball beyond the crossbar. And this, you

:08:13. > :08:22.sense, is a game changing possession for the Serbians. And they know it!

:08:23. > :08:30.It goes in two different directions before hitting the right post, and

:08:31. > :08:35.Nagy may be more lucky than good in that particular sequence. Just

:08:36. > :08:44.enough of a touch from the defender to deny the shot. The shot came in,

:08:45. > :08:50.but it wasn't a clean one. And that is ever the difference. Another

:08:51. > :08:54.opportunity for Hungary to re-establish a 2- goal lead. They

:08:55. > :09:05.have given it up quite easily, and you can ill afford that at this

:09:06. > :09:10.stage of the match. A turnover foul. And that will prove potentially

:09:11. > :09:16.costly as Serbia right now do not need too many indications in which

:09:17. > :09:36.to try and regain level pegging in this match. Outside that five metre

:09:37. > :09:44.line. An exclusion foul against Svivos, and he will make his way out

:09:45. > :09:49.of the pool. That was a major foul, three of them, and that has led to

:09:50. > :09:56.his exclusion from the remaining portion of this match. The official

:09:57. > :10:05.on the far side of the pool with the ball, awaiting clearance to return

:10:06. > :10:11.to action, and he is buckled up and ready to go. Here are the Serbians

:10:12. > :10:21.with the chance to level this match in the important finishing, business

:10:22. > :10:26.end of the 32 minutes, as we work from the outside to the near the

:10:27. > :10:35.shot expected at any moment, you will take it? The anticipation,

:10:36. > :10:41.where will the delivery go? Inside that left post, and Filip Filipovic

:10:42. > :10:46.has been illegal for the Serbians. The punishing left-handed, sizzling

:10:47. > :10:52.stroke -- has been lethal for. And you see the work going on off of the

:10:53. > :11:03.play, but this is an explosion of power. And Nagy is beaten clearly.

:11:04. > :11:13.That man, triumphant, has levelled this at 12. Three goals from his

:11:14. > :11:17.nine opportunities. He would have loved a more efficient return, but

:11:18. > :11:27.you talk about big goals at the big time, and you need those, and Serbia

:11:28. > :11:34.have just got one. That shot clock slipping away from Hungary. You feel

:11:35. > :11:47.the change in the complexion of this game. It is choppy waters now for

:11:48. > :11:57.Hungary. The long, extended arm defensively, and Serbia just

:11:58. > :11:59.thrusting themselves in front of the Hungarian shooters. Every inch of

:12:00. > :12:05.the Battle continues in front of the Serbian goal, and it will be

:12:06. > :12:12.retained from the Hungarian study outside. They will push forward.

:12:13. > :12:19.Moving the ball around, so much defensive work to stay aloft, and

:12:20. > :12:27.strong and upright. Look at the shot, it is work, right around the

:12:28. > :12:36.horn and Hungary have struck gold with a big one there. And that is a

:12:37. > :12:49.massive arrival, to a 13th goal. My goodness. They work it around the

:12:50. > :12:57.outside and the shot again, that ever dangerous left-handed strike

:12:58. > :13:02.from Martin Ramos. He has been right on the money. And he delivers what

:13:03. > :13:10.could be a decisive goal in this one. -- Vamos. That is his second

:13:11. > :13:19.goal. Both of them have been memorable. One from a long distance

:13:20. > :13:32.earlier in the first half, and now this one, late in the second. Serbia

:13:33. > :13:37.winning the ball back after giving it up quite easily. They needed

:13:38. > :13:50.that, and this game, ever in the balance. Varga giving over that

:13:51. > :13:58.turnover -- that turnover foul. Serbia, from the outside. This is a

:13:59. > :14:05.sequence in which they need to execute, they know it, and it is off

:14:06. > :14:06.the bar. They can retain control, they have reloaded the 32nd shot

:14:07. > :14:28.clock. -- the 30-2nd shot clock. It is a minute, and the countdown

:14:29. > :14:33.continues. It is a 1- goal differential, and Hungary have done

:14:34. > :14:39.just enough to keep it out, it is deflected onto the frame by Nagy,

:14:40. > :14:45.and this could be decisive. Nagy with enough of a touch, and it goes

:14:46. > :14:50.for the crossbar, and stays out of the Hungarian goal. And is that the

:14:51. > :14:53.difference in this match, as the time-out is called, and a chance for

:14:54. > :14:58.the Hungarian is to settle down the troops, as they will take this

:14:59. > :15:04.possession, and as much as they would love to score, they do not add

:15:05. > :15:10.up the ball easily, and allow a Serbian counter attack, and

:15:11. > :15:15.instructions now coming in from Tibor Benedek. He is asserting the

:15:16. > :15:16.plan for his side from the edge of the pool in the Maria Lenk Aquatics

:15:17. > :15:47.Centre. An elite -- and a late counter

:15:48. > :15:56.attack here from the Hungarians. Nagy substituted. In is his

:15:57. > :16:01.counterpart. This is all about game management for the Hungarians. They

:16:02. > :16:06.will just work this clock down, they have been doing a great job so far.

:16:07. > :16:09.Inside of 30 seconds of the game clock and is there something

:16:10. > :16:17.miraculous from Serbia to take control back?

:16:18. > :16:24.So much going on right now, the whistle is blown and the officials

:16:25. > :16:30.reassert themselves in the closing stages of this match. That was the

:16:31. > :16:40.injury to Nagy, leading to the substitution. He gets some work on

:16:41. > :16:47.the sidelines here. All that goes on under the water that you do not see.

:16:48. > :16:51.What a tremendous exertion of energy is a water polo match, and

:16:52. > :16:56.particularly this one will stop it has been tense and it has been the

:16:57. > :17:01.Serbians under all manner of pressure as they are expected as the

:17:02. > :17:04.favourites. They are down by one and this is their last formulation of a

:17:05. > :17:06.game plan to try to level this one, try to walk away with at least one

:17:07. > :17:24.point from this match. Great shots here of the closing

:17:25. > :17:29.stages of Pool A action in the men's water polo. The Hungarians have a

:17:30. > :17:35.slim one goal advantage, but the Serbians have a chance.

:17:36. > :17:42.See if they can get themselves a tie from this match. A shot off the bar

:17:43. > :17:47.and it will be a whistle, it is indicated by the official and the

:17:48. > :17:56.Hungarians will retreat, the Serbians will maintain possession.

:17:57. > :18:03.What a finish their! We are dead level and a baker's dozen apiece. 13

:18:04. > :18:07.on the board and four seconds remaining. Serbia have looked to

:18:08. > :18:16.have done the impossible, but it is the improbable, as they are the

:18:17. > :18:22.expected, probable gold medallists. They showed how capable they are as

:18:23. > :18:27.the powerful delivery once more from the hammerhead of Filipovic has

:18:28. > :18:32.brought a fourth goal from him personally today. The 13 for his

:18:33. > :18:42.team and time will slip away in this match. That is where the match will

:18:43. > :18:47.stay. 13 goals apiece for Serbia and Hungary in men's water polo in Pool

:18:48. > :18:51.A action. That was not the anticipated results. The Hungarians

:18:52. > :19:01.are pleased, but they were in a great position to put claim to all

:19:02. > :19:07.of the points in this opening match. That's the way it will finish.

:19:08. > :19:09.Serbia and Hungary tie and they have a draw at 13 apiece in the men's

:19:10. > :19:19.water polo. ORE ODUBA: what a way to kick off

:19:20. > :19:25.the water polo tournament. Hungary and Serbia shared the spoils.

:19:26. > :19:30.Possibly not the result is that those two would have liked, but a

:19:31. > :19:34.great result for the rest of the competition. Serbia odds on for the

:19:35. > :19:38.gold medal, but they had work to do, showing great resolve in that game.

:19:39. > :19:43.There is more for you water polo fans out there, because if you go to

:19:44. > :19:49.the BBC sport website or use the act, in about 25 minutes, we will

:19:50. > :19:55.watch the... Oh, no, that is them now! Forget 25 minutes, team USA,

:19:56. > :20:01.Beijing silver medallists are coming on right now. They are taking on the

:20:02. > :20:04.Olympic champions, Croatia. You can see that battle royale over on the

:20:05. > :20:09.BBC sport website or on the BBC is bought at. Coming up here on BBC

:20:10. > :20:20.Four... We are zipping over to Copacabana

:20:21. > :20:28.shortly for our first taste of Beach Volleyball Arena. Italy take on

:20:29. > :20:33.Austria in the men's competition. Then another first, never before has

:20:34. > :20:37.rugby sevens been contested at the Olympic Games. France and Spain have

:20:38. > :20:42.the honour of opening the women's event. After that, we will stay on

:20:43. > :20:52.site at the Diadora to see Ireland take on five-time champions in India

:20:53. > :20:59.-- India. Fresh from her victory, Heather Watson starts her Olympic

:21:00. > :21:03.singles campaign. We will see that before we return to the man's

:21:04. > :21:06.hockey. Maximum points against Belgium is the plan for Great

:21:07. > :21:12.Britain, aiming to get their campaign off to the perfect start.

:21:13. > :21:17.And we will get a first look at our guys in the gymnastics. Matt

:21:18. > :21:23.Whitlock and his band of brothers one bronze four years ago. They will

:21:24. > :21:29.have their eye on the next step up at least. The rest of our afternoon

:21:30. > :22:03.is looking at this -- looking like this. Next up, beach volleyball.

:22:04. > :22:09.Things have really come to life here on the Olympic Park. You can see

:22:10. > :22:15.people are running. They are running to get to their destination. Why? I

:22:16. > :22:18.don't know. Some are going to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, but most

:22:19. > :22:22.of them are heading this way to what looks like the Aquatic Centre. We

:22:23. > :22:27.are going to see plenty of swimming kicking off later on this afternoon

:22:28. > :22:31.from about 1pm our time, 4pm your time or five o'clock, I should say.

:22:32. > :22:36.I'm going to get my maths wrong over the course of these two weeks. Let's

:22:37. > :22:39.had to Beach Volleyball Arena sports synonymous with this country, not

:22:40. > :22:45.least because the first ever World Championships was held here in Rio

:22:46. > :22:54.and also with 11 medals, our host country are the most decorated in

:22:55. > :22:59.Olympic history. It will be a popular sport. Let's check in on the

:23:00. > :23:03.12,000 seater arena on Copacabana Beach. The world number one pair,

:23:04. > :23:07.the Brazilians, they will take to the sand in about one hour, maybe

:23:08. > :23:12.less. You will be able to see them on BBC One, I should think. The

:23:13. > :23:18.curtain raiser will see Italy take on Austria. We will join it in the

:23:19. > :23:25.first game. Best of three. It is the best of 21, and if they decide is

:23:26. > :23:32.needed, first to 15. We will see Italy taking on Austria. Italy

:23:33. > :23:37.currently lead 12-8. Over to our commentator.

:23:38. > :23:42.Giving the players an opportunity to have a bit of a chat and think about

:23:43. > :23:55.their strategies and how they have settled in to the first set.

:23:56. > :24:27.Hearing the Italians having a bit of conversation.

:24:28. > :24:33.Beautiful scenes here at Copacabana beach. Magnificent 15,000 seat

:24:34. > :24:53.stadium. Found the space they're perfectly,

:24:54. > :25:10.Alexander Horst. Now it will be his serve.

:25:11. > :25:21.Another point to the Austrians. Taking back that score now, only

:25:22. > :25:33.three points the difference. It is amazing, the

:25:34. > :26:04.Doppler got to the dock, couldn't quite get it over.

:26:05. > :26:53.Finished off again by Ranghieri. Great blocking ability at the net,

:26:54. > :27:03.that's for sure. Known as the net patrol, Ranghieri,

:27:04. > :27:26.and that is why. Oh, beautiful block at the front of

:27:27. > :27:33.the Court by Ranghieri. Knows how important that point was. Really

:27:34. > :27:36.stretching the lead out now, 16-11. A really good point that, in

:27:37. > :27:46.general, from the Italians. Not only that block, but Carambula diving to

:27:47. > :28:07.keep the ball in play. Great block at the front of the

:28:08. > :28:19.court. Ranghieri is really coming into his own here.

:28:20. > :28:30.17-11 now to Italy as the ball hurtles up in the air again.

:28:31. > :28:37.The point has been given to Austria. Maybe Ranghieri going a little too

:28:38. > :28:45.far and over into the opposition's court.

:28:46. > :28:50.Maybe just clipping the net on the way down. It was a close call, but

:28:51. > :28:57.it has gone to Austria. Straight off the set. That was a

:28:58. > :29:06.powerful hit. Ranghieri is really taking control

:29:07. > :29:30.of the skies. Dominant in the air. See what the Austrians can do now to

:29:31. > :30:04.get back into this first set. Good momentum for Austria. They need

:30:05. > :30:54.it right now. The Austrians point the finger at

:30:55. > :31:05.the Italians. It will go to the challenge referee. The challenge on

:31:06. > :31:12.the block touch. It could save them the set point here. As it stands,

:31:13. > :31:31.Italy 20, Austria 14, here is a replay. Good luck calling that 1!

:31:32. > :31:45.I'm glad it is not my job. That is all I'm saying. Very difficult 1 to

:31:46. > :31:52.call. Unsuccessful challenge. This is set point to Italy, 20-14, and it

:31:53. > :32:01.will be the man born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to take the serve, Adrian

:32:02. > :32:25.Carambula. They have called a time-out. They were all set to go.

:32:26. > :32:39.Both the Italians living in Rome, Adrian Carambula born in Montevideo,

:32:40. > :32:42.moved to the US when he was 13, but started representing the Italians at

:32:43. > :32:52.beach volleyball through his Italian grandmother. Now, Austria have got

:32:53. > :33:07.to go out and try to save set point on the sands of Copacabana.

:33:08. > :33:16.So, first set, first blood to Italy, and we are going to join the

:33:17. > :33:21.coverage now with the Italians leading in the second game as well,

:33:22. > :33:36.the score now 11-7. Let's rejoin Peter Blackburn.

:33:37. > :33:45.The crowd love it, don't they? Just going wide, there. They will have

:33:46. > :33:55.picked up a few points, with a handy 5-point lead. Great Birds Eye view

:33:56. > :34:14.from the sky ball. Great defence. Starting to run away with it, the

:34:15. > :34:22.Italian pair, 13-7, took the first set 21-14. It is that unique style

:34:23. > :34:27.they have, which challenges some of the most experienced players in the

:34:28. > :34:55.game. The Austrians just finding it hard to control. Here we go again.

:34:56. > :35:07.Great rally, and a great finish again by Ranghieri, both players

:35:08. > :35:22.working hard to control the ball, great movement round the court.

:35:23. > :35:45.No stopping shots like that, straight down into the sand.

:35:46. > :35:54.Setting themselves points targets, almost, the Italians, as they take

:35:55. > :36:01.to the court once again. They are brimming with confidence, they are

:36:02. > :36:12.running out there, ready to go. The assistant setting up those lines

:36:13. > :36:24.again. They have got a very handy lead, 14-7. The sky ball again.

:36:25. > :36:39.Ranghieri at the front court, taking the opportunity when the ball was

:36:40. > :36:52.short. 15-7, now. Now, the crowd starting to get into this, cheering

:36:53. > :36:57.as the sky ball drops. The Austrians were here in the world tour event

:36:58. > :37:03.earlier this year and they took a sample of the sand and padded

:37:04. > :37:07.replicated in Vienna. They have been practising on the Rio sand back in

:37:08. > :37:21.Vienna. Not helping them so far, though. Lovely control at the front

:37:22. > :37:23.court again from Carambula. He has played so well, look at that, lovely

:37:24. > :37:53.control. The Austrian pair needed that. From

:37:54. > :38:00.the centre of the court. They didn't need that, though. Straight into the

:38:01. > :38:08.net. 17-9 now to the Italians, if they get 21 points they win the

:38:09. > :38:17.match. It is only a pool game but what a way to start. He tried the

:38:18. > :38:18.regular serve, there, Carambula. He is not conventional, that is for

:38:19. > :38:37.sure. The service points in this game,

:38:38. > :38:48.that is just stretching the pressure on the server. Sometimes, it just

:38:49. > :38:54.brings out the errors. Ranghieri tends to just nudge it over the net,

:38:55. > :38:59.so he can then get in for the block. He has done fantastic, it is almost

:39:00. > :39:03.like serve and volley in tennis for Ranghieri, he gets ready for the

:39:04. > :39:20.spike, and he can get there immediately to block it. I think

:39:21. > :39:31.they are enjoying themselves! That was a nice finish from Austria. The

:39:32. > :39:40.question is, it is a big gap that they have got to pick up. And little

:39:41. > :39:55.time and points in which to do it. Italy, two points away from winning

:39:56. > :40:08.the match. They picked up that one. They only need a good run here.

:40:09. > :40:14.Carambula brings up match point. With that strike down the line. Not

:40:15. > :40:48.bad, eight match points. Second match point for the Italians.

:40:49. > :40:56.Oh, there it is! What a way to finish the match, with an entirely

:40:57. > :41:00.unconventional... Everybody thought Carambula was going to set up

:41:01. > :41:09.Ranghieri and he just popped it into the empty court. The Italians are

:41:10. > :41:14.celebrating, victory in two straight sets, gives them confidence in the

:41:15. > :41:20.first round, the preliminaries, the first step to the last 16 they have

:41:21. > :41:28.come into the competition in good form, two wins in the world tour

:41:29. > :41:31.this year, in Turkey and in Qatar and they continue that form of a

:41:32. > :41:37.reasonably comfortable victory, you have to say. Everyone thinks that he

:41:38. > :41:41.is going to set up Ranghieri, and he just nudges it over the net. Great

:41:42. > :41:48.start of the competition in the men's beach volleyball for Italy

:41:49. > :41:52.beating Austria 2-0. Hopefully we will see more of that on our

:41:53. > :41:58.programme. The women's is still to come. We're having a great time here

:41:59. > :42:06.on the park. We are next going to show the rugby sevens which is

:42:07. > :42:09.taking place 20 kilometres north, at Diadora. France taking up Spain

:42:10. > :42:15.next, then Great Britain against the hosts, Brazil, that will be about

:42:16. > :42:22.4pm your time on BBC One. My watch says 20 to 11! Before they came out

:42:23. > :42:32.to Brazil, the Great Britain girls caught up with my colleague Charlie

:42:33. > :42:37.Stayt to experience their training. Sevens is a game of speed, pace and

:42:38. > :42:48.agility, and it is also about the power. The game is brutal, to be

:42:49. > :42:54.honest. It is fast paced. You have all of the normal bits of the XV

:42:55. > :42:59.game, the compact, but they are all a bit smaller. You have to be super

:43:00. > :43:04.fit to play sevens. Some people think about rugby players and they

:43:05. > :43:12.think about bulk, maybe. Look at me, definitely not! You are really quite

:43:13. > :43:17.slight. Lots of the sevens players are quite slim. It is more of a fast

:43:18. > :43:25.game, it is about fitness. You don't have to be big to play sevens. In

:43:26. > :43:29.your sport, what is the big rivalry? I don't know, maybe Wales and

:43:30. > :43:36.England. But that is not relevant on this occasion, because you are all

:43:37. > :43:45.in one team. We came in and bonded so well with all the girls.

:43:46. > :43:50.Obviously you have rivalry between England, Scotland and Wales and we

:43:51. > :43:53.wondered what the interaction in the squad would be like, but everybody

:43:54. > :43:58.has accepted everybody and they are all great friends, so that helps the

:43:59. > :44:02.coaches a lot. Rugby sevens is brand-new to this year's Olympic

:44:03. > :44:08.Games. It is a wonderful opportunity for the sport to be seen by millions

:44:09. > :44:13.worldwide, and Team GB are really up for the challenge. We are building

:44:14. > :44:18.to the Olympics at the end of the year, we have won a tournament, we

:44:19. > :44:22.have been further couple of times so the girls are in a really good

:44:23. > :44:25.place. We put all the planning in place and execute the best of our

:44:26. > :44:32.ability, then we have got a great chance to medal. It is such a great,

:44:33. > :44:40.inclusive sport, to be put alongside the great events of the Olympics. Do

:44:41. > :44:51.you think you might get gold? We are just fine to get there at the

:44:52. > :45:01.moment. Every time I see Charlie taking those hits, it hurts me! Now,

:45:02. > :45:09.we are going to head over to the Diadoro Stadium and join Rob. You

:45:10. > :45:13.see the rugby sevens year after year, it is about time that the

:45:14. > :45:18.Olympic audience got to enjoy this. They are in for a treat, aren't

:45:19. > :45:27.they? Yes, perfect format for the Olympic Games, high-energy and a

:45:28. > :45:30.feast of action. In the women's, Australia are the reigning world

:45:31. > :45:34.Series champions but New Zealand have won the most times, three

:45:35. > :45:39.times. Is that the final we are expecting see? It'll be hard pushed

:45:40. > :45:45.to be different to that. New Zealand are the dominant force physically.

:45:46. > :45:49.They so imposing. Australia set the standard with amazing passing skills

:45:50. > :45:53.to shift the ball to stay away from the sizeable New Zealand players,

:45:54. > :45:58.but in a game such as this, the team plays such a part. Sometimes it

:45:59. > :46:01.comes down to being a little bit bigger, and it will be a good

:46:02. > :46:07.contest between those two body can't write off Team GB and Canada.

:46:08. > :46:16.Team GB are led by Emily scarring. In England, anyway, they qualified

:46:17. > :46:21.fourth. I be in with a chance of a medal? Yes. They have consistency

:46:22. > :46:25.and playing together. 11 of the players are from the English setter.

:46:26. > :46:28.We throw in a Welsh girl, an English coach, a Welsh coach coming

:46:29. > :46:31.together, and they have a long shot at this. They have been together for

:46:32. > :46:35.six or seven months preparing for this one event as well as going

:46:36. > :46:37.through the whole series. They are well-placed, absolutely physically

:46:38. > :46:42.on point and are going to embrace this tournament and showcase their

:46:43. > :46:46.skills, as well. Looking forward to seeing them later. What about France

:46:47. > :46:51.and Spain? 50 versus eighth seed. You expect France to take this? I

:46:52. > :47:01.would do. Are part-time players. Coming together from a group of

:47:02. > :47:04.students and nurses. They also have the only female firefighter. They

:47:05. > :47:08.are against sizeable people and they throw their weight around. That's

:47:09. > :47:13.for sure. With weight and speed it will be on fire at the Diadora.

:47:14. > :47:24.Thank you very much. The pitch down at Diadora is looking in pristine

:47:25. > :47:31.condition. -- Diadora. The first in the history of the games. The Team

:47:32. > :47:37.GB campaign pins race against Brazil. The women arrived around

:47:38. > :47:41.Wednesday last week and I got to catch up with them and the athletes'

:47:42. > :47:50.village. They are really excited. If you want a little locator, or a

:47:51. > :47:52.general one, the athletes' village is in that direction.

:47:53. > :47:56.The athletes village for around 10,000 athletes from more than 200

:47:57. > :48:02.countries around the world. This is their first step towards winning an

:48:03. > :48:03.Olympic. Not least for our friends, Team GB towers. Let's see how they

:48:04. > :48:23.are getting on. Hello. Got the shot. Rugby sevens girls are

:48:24. > :48:27.in the house. They seem in pretty good spirits. Why wouldn't they be?

:48:28. > :48:34.They have union jack deckchairs down there. I love what you've done with

:48:35. > :48:37.the place. The great thing about an Olympic villages you pretty much get

:48:38. > :48:44.a bare space and it is your allotment to do what you like with.

:48:45. > :48:49.Who let Mark in up there? Give us wave. Good to see you. Don't you

:48:50. > :48:54.have work to do? Brilliant, OK. We will see you in a jiffy. Spirits

:48:55. > :48:59.seem really good. Miller it is a great buzz, everyone is really

:49:00. > :49:04.excited and pleased to be here. Welcome to Rio. How are you finding

:49:05. > :49:07.it? Really good. The place is amazing. We're getting started in a

:49:08. > :49:11.few days and it has come round quick. We're looking forward to it.

:49:12. > :49:18.We will see you down there, take care. What's great about the village

:49:19. > :49:23.is that if you ever get lost, just follow the flags. Check it out.

:49:24. > :49:26.Canada back there looking loud and proud and taking up that tower

:49:27. > :49:32.block. Over year, we've got the Scandinavian quarter, including

:49:33. > :49:38.Denmark, Finland and Sweden, who are very welcoming. Over here, we have

:49:39. > :49:45.Portugal down low and up top, Slovenia feeling the love. Very

:49:46. > :49:56.good. That is what it is all about. Bring on the great. It's good on the

:49:57. > :50:01.tush. That's lovely. Out you go, thank you. I'm sure you're hoping

:50:02. > :50:05.this is a spot that will get used quite a lot by the Team GB

:50:06. > :50:09.contingent. Yes, we have set it up with 12 to 15 beds. We will probably

:50:10. > :50:14.have over 10,000 minutes worth of treatment in a day as we get into

:50:15. > :50:22.the Games, so all the sports are encouraged to use it. This way. Heh.

:50:23. > :50:25.Look, there's a person in here. There's a person hiding. You never

:50:26. > :50:33.know who you'll find. You never know. Hello? OK. There they are.

:50:34. > :50:38.Good to see you. I have to ask you about these guys. Look at them. It

:50:39. > :50:45.is your team. Your Olympic Rio 2016 team. It is a tight group here. We

:50:46. > :50:50.train and compete together. This is our sixth trip out here now as the

:50:51. > :50:56.Olympic squad, so we have bonded really well and so far we haven't

:50:57. > :51:03.had any major issues. All right coming here are. What about... I've

:51:04. > :51:10.got two. Do you mind if I...? It has been changed today. And now tainted,

:51:11. > :51:15.I'm afraid. If it's anything like London, you will probably see a lot

:51:16. > :51:20.of athletes with these flying low. Team GB will be taking those bed

:51:21. > :51:26.sheets home with them. We shall see, we shall see. There you have it, the

:51:27. > :51:30.village in all its glory. And by the sounds of it, according to the

:51:31. > :51:39.athletes, Team GB is definitely ready for Alexander Horst.

:51:40. > :51:47.I promise not to make a habit of laying in Team GB beds during the

:51:48. > :51:51.course of this games. We will head off to the Diadora now, because the

:51:52. > :51:58.shooting is set to give us the first gold medal of the games. Four years

:51:59. > :52:04.ago, exactly that, it happened in the ten metre women's air rifle. The

:52:05. > :52:12.honour went to China. China went on to win seven shooting medals during

:52:13. > :52:17.the games, but who will take the top step in the first of the

:52:18. > :52:21.championships? The American is currently leading the championship.

:52:22. > :52:26.Let's go to the National shooting Centre just now and as we approach

:52:27. > :52:31.the closing stages, enjoying our meditator, Richard Drew. -- joining

:52:32. > :52:44.our commentator. Keeping calm, shooting, sometimes

:52:45. > :52:46.they say between heartbeats. Sometimes the heartbeat starts to

:52:47. > :52:53.race and just about harming that down. It is that concentration,

:52:54. > :52:54.block everything out. Try not to look at the monitor in front of them

:52:55. > :53:17.to know what the score is. 10.3 is good, but could do with that

:53:18. > :53:32.10.8 to get into second. Not allowed to load it ahead of the jury. That

:53:33. > :53:34.is first and second. Very, very tight. Two more shops to see who

:53:35. > :54:15.will take bronze. Well, it is Thrasher's gold medal to

:54:16. > :54:19.lose. What a story that would be. Particularly managing to beat the

:54:20. > :54:39.very strong Chinese. This is to decide bronze.

:54:40. > :54:50.These two equal. Whoever scores higher here...

:54:51. > :55:02.And 9.8 from Yi. Goodness me, the defending Olympic champion could get

:55:03. > :55:09.bronze. 10.8, excellent under pressure. It is confirmed, she had

:55:10. > :55:15.the gold, of in London. Looking to beat the first ten metre air rifle

:55:16. > :55:17.athlete to take two golds. It is not to be, and Yi Siling takes third and

:55:18. > :55:32.takes the bronze. Such an accomplished athlete. That

:55:33. > :55:40.is another medal for her to add to that London gold. Had to give up

:55:41. > :55:43.shooting in 2004 because of the cost, her coach promised to cover

:55:44. > :55:49.expenses and I'm sure they are delighted with another medal for Yi

:55:50. > :55:55.Siling from the People's Republic of China. Two more shops to decide who

:55:56. > :56:02.takes gold. If Thrasher keeps calm, cool, and shooting like she has, she

:56:03. > :56:09.should be OK. However, she hasn't shot in the nines since... She has

:56:10. > :56:15.only shot one and that was her second shot of this whole condition.

:56:16. > :56:32.Since then, it has been in the tens. Can she continue in that great form?

:56:33. > :56:47.10.5 solid, that will see her good. Yi Siling needed to do something

:56:48. > :56:51.spectacular. She took care time, but she has equalled it. Unless

:56:52. > :56:57.something extraordinary happens to Thrasher, surely the American will

:56:58. > :57:06.take gold. She really was not on the radar. Packed into this Diadora

:57:07. > :57:09.venue to see what will happen. Last shot of this women's ten metres air

:57:10. > :57:23.rifle. It all comes down to this. One more

:57:24. > :57:30.shot to decide who takes gold, who takes silver.

:57:31. > :57:42.She has a crush on, Thrasher. Let's see what she can do here. She looks

:57:43. > :57:51.so calm. 10.4 should be enough. Look at the smile now and the exhalation

:57:52. > :57:58.of breath. Du still concentrating. Can she finish in style? 10.1, it is

:57:59. > :58:04.good but not good enough. We have our first gold medallist of the Rio

:58:05. > :58:10.Olympics and it is Thrasher, just 19 and a half years of age. She has

:58:11. > :58:19.surprised everyone to take gold here in Rio.

:58:20. > :58:22.ORE ODUBA: you saw that puff of air coming out of Thrasher. A little

:58:23. > :58:26.sigh of relief. She is the new Olympic champion in the women's air

:58:27. > :58:31.rifle ten metre. The first gold of the games goes to America. Let's

:58:32. > :58:36.look at our very first medal table, shall we? It makes fantastic reading

:58:37. > :58:41.for the USA. There they are, sitting proudly atop the table fangs to

:58:42. > :58:48.Thrasher's gold. Two medals for China with the defending champion

:58:49. > :58:56.ORE ODUBA: -- Yi Siling winning bronze. Du got silver. Everyone else

:58:57. > :59:01.has catching up to do. We are up and running. We have medals. We are

:59:02. > :59:07.going to stay here right now because it is time to kick off the rugby

:59:08. > :59:13.sevens tournament. It is its Olympic debut at Rio 2016 and everybody who

:59:14. > :59:18.is lucky to have a ticket is really in for a treat. The man kick-off

:59:19. > :59:22.next week. It is the women starting things today and for the next three

:59:23. > :59:27.days. Let's see how the team's matchup in the women's competition.

:59:28. > :59:34.12 teams broken down into three pools of four with the top two and

:59:35. > :59:38.the best two third placed teams going on. Anything than the last

:59:39. > :59:43.eight would be disappointed or France and Spain. They opening the

:59:44. > :59:47.competition. Let's see you can take the spoils in the very first sevens

:59:48. > :00:03.game of the games in the company of Sir Clive Woodward and Eddie Butler.

:00:04. > :00:10.COMMENTATOR: Women's rugby sevens, never played here before, but it

:00:11. > :00:17.takes its place here in Rio. We are quite a long way upcountry. It is

:00:18. > :00:25.France playing Spain, the favourites. Good morning, Sir Clive

:00:26. > :00:35.Woodward. It is wonderful to be here, wonderful for the first

:00:36. > :00:41.Olympic Games, and away we go. The referee is Amy Pert of Australia.

:00:42. > :00:52.Spain have the first kick in rugby sevens at the Olympics, and it is

:00:53. > :00:58.well taken. The captain of France is one of the speedsters on the

:00:59. > :01:04.outside. The normal rugby laws apply, of course there are reduced

:01:05. > :01:07.numbers, from 15 down to seven. We have scrums, line-outs, rocks,

:01:08. > :01:16.mauls, and a knock-on, as we saw there. It is a shame, France will be

:01:17. > :01:28.disappointed because that was a real chance. Spain are ranked eighth in

:01:29. > :01:35.the world. Three pools, four teams in each. Winners, runners-up, they

:01:36. > :01:39.go through automatically, and the best two third placed teams. So even

:01:40. > :01:51.if you lose there is the chance to grab one of the first-place spots.

:01:52. > :02:01.It's a penalty to France. That's a shame, because Vanessa real workers

:02:02. > :02:04.-- Ana Vanessa Rial was posed... Something has moved from the 15

:02:05. > :02:10.aside into the seven side game. A small knock-on. Again, the

:02:11. > :02:15.importance of the scrum is to get a quick and clean ball away. The

:02:16. > :02:22.halfbacks were putting one another under pressure, a better scrum from

:02:23. > :02:38.the French there. Shannon Isa. -- Shannon Izar, the

:02:39. > :02:47.first outbreak with good cover from Spain. Marina Bravo Bragado, and

:02:48. > :02:50.France, is this going to be the first try in sevens Olympic rugby?

:02:51. > :03:06.It is. France scored the first try. Try for France! Marjorie Mayans

:03:07. > :03:11.scored the first try in the Olympic Games for France, it's a wonderful

:03:12. > :03:16.try from the French. Showing typical French handling skills with a lot of

:03:17. > :03:21.movement. These kicks are important, and a great tribe from Marjorie

:03:22. > :03:26.Mayans. I don't know but she is called Queen of the tackles, she is

:03:27. > :03:30.a big tackle, but what an achievement for her. The first lady

:03:31. > :03:34.to score a try in the Olympic Games. Wonderful from France. There is an

:03:35. > :03:47.injury down here... One of the slight changes from 15s to sevens

:03:48. > :03:59.rugby. The team that scores restarts with the kick-off. Pauline Biscarat.

:04:00. > :04:05.France have made a replacement. Restarts are everything, when you

:04:06. > :04:14.score committee give the ball away. In the kick-off, it's whether the

:04:15. > :04:19.French can restart this from Horta's kick. It may have been Pauline

:04:20. > :04:28.Biscarat that score... Spain are on the move, France are aggressive.

:04:29. > :04:40.Pauline Biscarat again. A switch of play. The way it comes to deduct

:04:41. > :04:49.that was good from Ribero Garcia. Cannot take the scrum half out of

:04:50. > :04:56.play. That was quickly taken by Elisabet Martinez, and a small

:04:57. > :05:01.knock-on. That was a shame from the Spanish point of view, a little bit

:05:02. > :05:07.panicked there EU just had to hold onto the ball. The pass is on, she

:05:08. > :05:13.panics a bit, and a is given. France get the all-important possession in

:05:14. > :05:17.this game. It's early days in the tournament.

:05:18. > :05:26.At the Deodoro Stadium, not fooled by any means, but -- not fall by any

:05:27. > :05:31.means. But it is a long way from Rio, among the hills in a huge

:05:32. > :05:35.military encampment. Equestrian is up here, slalom,

:05:36. > :05:52.canoeing, hockey. And, this rugby stadium. Biscarat takes it quickly

:05:53. > :06:03.for France... On the wide outside. Lina Guerin manages the off-load.

:06:04. > :06:13.REFEREE: It is a tackle assist. It's a penalty to France.

:06:14. > :06:19.The set play... I watched the French training in the

:06:20. > :06:22.mountains in France, they will be fit. They did a lot of set play work

:06:23. > :06:35.against Team GB. This is a chance. It is going to be a try

:06:36. > :06:44.for Lina Guerin. Great set play, moving the ball up to Lina Guerin,

:06:45. > :06:50.scoring the second try. The width of the game here, there is

:06:51. > :06:50.too much pace here for the French team.

:06:51. > :07:14.It is a wonderful try. All kicks in rugby sevens are

:07:15. > :07:20.drop-kicks, conversions. A good effort from wide out, that was an

:07:21. > :07:28.early over. France are leading by 12-0. Seven minutes each way. If

:07:29. > :07:36.that does not sound much, it is exhausting! It's an array big game,

:07:37. > :07:41.this. Fitness really comes in handy, these girls have put a lot of

:07:42. > :07:52.training into this, to get ready for today. Biscarat starts.

:07:53. > :07:55.Here is a little variation, the kick

:07:56. > :08:04.ahead and it is well taken. Spain are on the move. Martin is in

:08:05. > :08:10.possession, that was good from Vanessa real, the scrum-half. -- Ana

:08:11. > :08:37.Vanessa Rial. It's a penalty to Spain. Quickly

:08:38. > :08:49.taken, and we are off again. There we go, half-time, France 12-0.

:08:50. > :08:57.An interesting first half, I think that it's a bit more physical than

:08:58. > :09:01.the Spanish team, the Spanish team have seven players in the squad over

:09:02. > :09:05.the age of 30. They looked fit enough but

:09:06. > :09:08.physicality, especially at the breakdown, there were a couple of

:09:09. > :09:14.turnovers and France court two good tries. They should be pleased,

:09:15. > :09:21.France are ranked fifth, Spain eighth. As you can see. The Spanish

:09:22. > :09:26.girls kept going for the Olympics, it was announced a few years ago.

:09:27. > :09:31.Many of them were on the brink of retirement, and yet, they came and

:09:32. > :09:35.delayed the decision because the chance to come here to the Rio

:09:36. > :09:52.Olympics. That applies across the board in the men's and women's game.

:09:53. > :10:06.Two tries from France, the second by Lina Guerin. The coach of Spain, and

:10:07. > :10:10.the French coach has been there six years, from the start. Keeping the

:10:11. > :10:14.team together. You have to remember France were the Six Nations

:10:15. > :10:21.champions this year, on the 15 aside game, a lot of players were involved

:10:22. > :10:26.in that at the Six Nations. But you have a very experienced coach here.

:10:27. > :10:29.Just coming off... A few players limping around, it is tough out

:10:30. > :10:33.there, in the heat and tough physically. The Spanish have put on

:10:34. > :10:38.a good show. They want to win this, France have

:10:39. > :11:00.two tries, they put on a pretty good show.

:11:01. > :11:08.Pauline Biscarat should start the second half, France are leading 12-0

:11:09. > :11:11.Spain, the restarts are important but that is easy enough for Spain to

:11:12. > :11:32.reclaim. Barbara Pla, taking it into contact.

:11:33. > :11:38.That's a penalty against Spain. Spain off their feet at the

:11:39. > :11:44.breakdown. We are going to have a line-out. Interesting tactics, I

:11:45. > :11:50.think they want a breather. Coming to the line-out. As long as they win

:11:51. > :11:54.it, that was a good call, but in rugby sevens you don't see that

:11:55. > :11:58.often, 40 yards out and then you go to a line-out, it's a bit of a

:11:59. > :12:09.lottery but hopefully France can win it and make the right decision.

:12:10. > :12:17.Three in the line-out for France... Well taken. It's a chance for Lina

:12:18. > :12:32.Guerin on the outside, it is the break... Carolyn the darkness.

:12:33. > :12:43.-- Caroline Ladagnous, a great try. A very powerful runner. You can see

:12:44. > :12:46.when she gets the ball on the outside, with Elodie Guiglion on.

:12:47. > :12:53.That is a really good try. You have to defend well, with people up

:12:54. > :12:59.against players of this pace and power.

:13:00. > :13:12.That was excellent, that conversion from Pauline Biscarat. France are

:13:13. > :13:16.now 19-0 up against Spain. I don't think Vanessa Rial will put that in

:13:17. > :13:25.her tackling portfolio. The scoring team takes the restart.

:13:26. > :13:33.So France. Back in the hands of the French. Biscarat watches it

:13:34. > :13:46.carefully. Switching play with a little run...

:13:47. > :13:55.Horta, the French captain. Stolen by Spain, a chance now for their first

:13:56. > :14:00.try of the game. Forward, the referee had a good look. Spain is

:14:01. > :14:06.still in possession. Barbara Pla, slumming it all down. Then

:14:07. > :14:10.accelerating, up to the 22. -- slamming away.

:14:11. > :14:18.This is quickly taken. So quickly taken, France were in no position to

:14:19. > :14:23.defend but not strong enough to prevent the try from Patricia. A

:14:24. > :14:29.wonderful try. You had to say, when the penalties came, tap and go, tap

:14:30. > :14:36.and go. That was great. What a moment for Patricia. They will be

:14:37. > :14:44.delighted with that, it's a big comeback for the Spanish team. They

:14:45. > :14:50.kept that going, tap and go, and that speed.

:14:51. > :14:59.You cannot defend against it. That conversion is good, Spain are up to

:15:00. > :15:03.seven points, 19-7, France leading. You would expect the Spanish to be

:15:04. > :15:08.good at convergence and drop goals, that was a great drop goal.

:15:09. > :15:15.Seven points on the board, well done to Spain. Scoring a try and

:15:16. > :15:21.converting it. Garcia comes back to take the restart. She is a key

:15:22. > :15:25.player. She is showing what a good player shears, keeping the speed of

:15:26. > :15:30.the game up, fantastic and trying to get as much hyped on the restart as

:15:31. > :15:39.possible. Allowing a challenge. -- what a good player she is.

:15:40. > :15:51.A good tackle. The ball is not out of play.

:15:52. > :16:07.Elodie Guiglion with a bit of physical contact. Good movement off

:16:08. > :16:13.the ball. Short and long. Elodie Guiglion is off again, support from

:16:14. > :16:19.Elodie Guiglion and she is strong enough and fast enough to make it to

:16:20. > :16:25.the line. A wonderful try. What is impressive is the skill of the

:16:26. > :16:29.ladies here. Watching the width they are putting on the game and their

:16:30. > :16:34.left hand is excellent. The off-loads and the tackle makes this

:16:35. > :16:37.such a great game. We will not be up applauding for the rucks and mauls,

:16:38. > :17:00.we just have the off-loads. That is a wonderful try. Elodie Guiglion

:17:01. > :17:13.scored the try. A conversion just slides wide by Pauline Biscarat.

:17:14. > :17:29.Rose Thomas is on for France as a rolling replacement.

:17:30. > :17:39.Here is Thomas involves, Barbara Pla for Spain.

:17:40. > :17:45.Well delivered. That was an important tackle but it was an

:17:46. > :17:58.illegal one. Spain will pick up the pieces from this. It will be quickly

:17:59. > :18:08.taken by Maria Casado, if she can. Yes, she can.

:18:09. > :18:32.This is the little charge by one of the try scorers. Jade Le Pesq. Now

:18:33. > :18:40.to Spain again. The last player of the game in the whistle has gone.

:18:41. > :18:48.Barbara Pla let it go and she is back in possession.

:18:49. > :18:56.Oh, it has gone loose yet again. This could be the end of the game.

:18:57. > :19:11.No. Spain in possession. The good tackle by France.

:19:12. > :19:19.The Spanish number four, Patricia go see is a wonderful player. She is

:19:20. > :19:23.certainly the player that has kept the Spanish team going. Spain are

:19:24. > :19:50.going to make an early change. Patricia Garcia is coming off and

:19:51. > :20:00.there is one last chance for Spain. A penalty to France this time.

:20:01. > :20:04.Knocked on by France. That is the end of the very first game of

:20:05. > :20:12.women's sevens at the Olympic Games and France have beaten Spain by

:20:13. > :20:16.24-7. Thank you very much to Eddie Butler

:20:17. > :20:21.and Clive Woodward for talking us through the very first rugby sevens

:20:22. > :20:24.game of the Olympic Games and we have another night standing by

:20:25. > :20:29.because we can talk to Matthew Pinsent for the very first time.

:20:30. > :20:31.What a great way to kick off the women's competition.

:20:32. > :20:37.Yes, a lovely piece of history to see rugby introduced back into the

:20:38. > :20:42.Olympics. 1924 was the first time the -- last time the 15 game was

:20:43. > :20:47.played so it is great to see rugby reintroduced and the women's sevens

:20:48. > :20:51.have taken the torch and created a little piece of Olympic history. It

:20:52. > :20:56.is a pleasure to be there to witness it. It is great to see you down

:20:57. > :21:01.there, Matt, we have a busy day of action in the women's competition.

:21:02. > :21:06.Give us an idea of what we can look forward to next. The next match, we

:21:07. > :21:11.have just seen Spain against France and next we have Kenny against New

:21:12. > :21:15.Zealand. New Zealand are a runaway favourite in the women's competition

:21:16. > :21:23.and a few minutes after that it will be Team GB against the hosts,

:21:24. > :21:27.Brazil. It is a long day of group stage games but we are hoping that

:21:28. > :21:32.GB will make a winning start to that and continue the habit in the next

:21:33. > :21:37.few days here at the Deodoro. Tell us a bit more about the venue.

:21:38. > :21:40.Plenty of the venues have a green theme which sticks with the national

:21:41. > :21:45.colours but that grass looks good enough to touch. It is absolutely

:21:46. > :21:48.beautiful. Do not take too much impact on the number of seats or

:21:49. > :21:52.tickets who have been sold here, there is a posse of spectators

:21:53. > :21:57.behind at the camera can't see in the stand up here but we are hoping

:21:58. > :22:02.through the session today and in the few days on in the competition,

:22:03. > :22:06.these seats will fill up as the days go, because obviously sevens is just

:22:07. > :22:09.match after match after match and it is a fantastic atmosphere already

:22:10. > :22:15.and we hope you will philatelist more than what we can see already at

:22:16. > :22:16.the moment. A fantastic start. Thank you to Matthew Pinsent at the

:22:17. > :22:26.Deodoro Stadium. Plenty more coming up for you on BBC

:22:27. > :22:30.Four. Ireland and their 100 year wait in the hockey as the men take

:22:31. > :22:36.on India and we will be with them very soon. Wimbledon mixed doubles

:22:37. > :22:47.champion Heather Watson starts her Olympic singles campaign. Staying

:22:48. > :22:53.with the hockey it is a must win game for written against Belgium in

:22:54. > :22:58.pool A. And closing our programme we will take a trip to the Rio arena to

:22:59. > :23:02.see if the men's British gymnastics team can qualify for the finals.

:23:03. > :23:07.They really ought to and it will be a disappointment if they don't. Just

:23:08. > :23:12.to recapitalise here is how the next few hours look for you. Ireland

:23:13. > :23:18.against India is next and then we have the men's hockey as well. We

:23:19. > :23:21.will seek Belgium against great Britain and then Team GB will be

:23:22. > :23:31.taking to the podium for the gymnastics. Come with us for a bit

:23:32. > :23:36.of a walk. We have amassed the most humongous queue here on the Olympic

:23:37. > :23:41.Park. We are going to show tennis a bit later and we will see the mixed

:23:42. > :23:45.doubles champion from Wimbledon in action, Heather Watson, maybe this

:23:46. > :23:49.is what they are all after. I could ask them but they looked very busy

:23:50. > :23:53.trying to get the best seat in town. Instead we will go from the Olympic

:23:54. > :23:58.Park here and back to the Deodoro where we will talk hockey. We have

:23:59. > :24:03.real medal hopes for both the great Britain men and women but for

:24:04. > :24:07.Ireland, they are in uncharted territory. They have been for the

:24:08. > :24:12.last 100 years. They will take on India, a team with real Olympic

:24:13. > :24:17.pedigree. Five times the men have taken the title in this competition.

:24:18. > :24:22.As we look at how the groups are split in the hockey, there are 12

:24:23. > :24:26.teams in two groups of six. The top for progress to the quarterfinals.

:24:27. > :24:29.Ireland are one of the lower ranked teams but they will fancy their

:24:30. > :24:36.chances of qualifying out of group B. The match started a little

:24:37. > :24:42.earlier and we will join it in the second quarter, but there wasn't a

:24:43. > :24:48.goal scored in the first quarter, by India. This is the very last action

:24:49. > :24:53.and as you can see right on the buzzer India take the first plug in

:24:54. > :24:59.that quarter. It is a change to the format from London 2012, they now

:25:00. > :25:05.play four quarters of 15 minutes. So, let us join it in the second

:25:06. > :25:08.corner after we see how India whipped their way in that penalty

:25:09. > :25:12.corner to take the lead and they lead by 1-0. We will see how the

:25:13. > :25:20.second quarter goes in the company of Erin Murphy.

:25:21. > :25:37.We're underway in the second period. India won and no score for Ireland.

:25:38. > :25:47.A goal already. Jackson shows good hands as he dribbles around. India

:25:48. > :25:54.try to transition. Jonathan Jackson read it well. John Jackson is

:25:55. > :25:58.showing great prowess on the ball. Ireland Sleep Time on the ball. When

:25:59. > :26:03.you are defending penalty corners like that it takes you out of your

:26:04. > :26:09.off -- offensive rhythm and the coach will try to turn the tables

:26:10. > :26:24.back for Ireland. Bell goes back out over the 23. Harte is trying to find

:26:25. > :26:29.a scene and he gets it forward. A bit of skill there and flick between

:26:30. > :26:37.the legs but he it away. India will happily take the turnover and break

:26:38. > :26:51.up the right side. Here comes the captain of India to severe. . It

:26:52. > :26:54.will be a long corner. India, you can see when they get those

:26:55. > :26:58.turnovers that Ireland are trying to be cute and clever in the scoring

:26:59. > :27:03.circle and India are happy to take those turnovers and a transition

:27:04. > :27:13.through. They are coming at Ireland again. Here is Raghunath Vokkaliga.

:27:14. > :27:18.It is his second Olympics and you cannot discount the experience up

:27:19. > :27:22.and down this India line-up, including their coach who has got an

:27:23. > :27:28.Olympic gold medal in his previous job at the Netherlands coach in

:27:29. > :27:36.1996. Right now they are enjoying a 1-0 lead in the second period. 12.45

:27:37. > :27:53.to go in the second part. Ireland have no score. Swept away by

:27:54. > :28:07.Jonathan Bell. Ireland hemmed in their own in the 23. That will be a

:28:08. > :28:19.free hit for the team Ireland. Here is Harte. To Jonathan Bell, up the

:28:20. > :28:23.right side. Ireland are trying to find a same again and turn back

:28:24. > :28:33.there. The right idea by Eugene Magee. He dances in with a shot. It

:28:34. > :28:39.is up high and over the neck. That ball was well wide of the Indian

:28:40. > :28:49.net. The right idea by Ireland at the shop was not on target. -- but

:28:50. > :29:03.the shot was not on target. Ireland make some substitutions. Good use of

:29:04. > :29:05.the substitutions. Everybody is fresh and hydrated which will be a

:29:06. > :29:19.factor in the Brazilian heat. Harte as steady as a rock comes

:29:20. > :29:25.forward., Art. 33 goals internationally for Ireland. He

:29:26. > :29:37.plays for the Royal racing club in Belgium. Michael Darling turns the

:29:38. > :29:48.ball over. A free hit from the 15 or thereabouts for India and they come

:29:49. > :29:53.forward. It goes ahead to Raghunath Vokkaliga. He is the lone marksman

:29:54. > :30:02.in this game in the men's hockey tournament. It is his 131st

:30:03. > :30:08.international goal. You can see that he wants to attack and he wants to

:30:09. > :30:11.test Ireland's resolve. He is reading the game well and he feels

:30:12. > :30:15.that maybe he has got some space down the right-hand side but Ireland

:30:16. > :30:20.have fresh legs and they are using their substitutions and they have

:30:21. > :30:21.kept Raghunath Vokkaliga at bay except for that penalty strike, the

:30:22. > :30:34.penalty goal. That was picked off by Darling...

:30:35. > :30:38.But was good hands from Alan Sothern. A dangerous moment on the

:30:39. > :30:49.attack 40 mile and right there. Good signs for them, as they try to get

:30:50. > :30:54.one back here -- 4-team Ireland. India make a break down the

:30:55. > :31:02.left-hand side, trying to make it 2-0, that was an incredible effort.

:31:03. > :31:07.Look at the speed. Two on one situation, Harte takes the shooter

:31:08. > :31:17.the whole way. And the shooter was coming down the

:31:18. > :31:34.side... Just putting it wide. Nikkin with the chance, he puts it wide. It

:31:35. > :31:38.remains 1-0. Kirk Shimmins... Dancing along the sideline, trying

:31:39. > :31:46.to stay out of the green turf. Good defence from Ireland. German in two

:31:47. > :31:53.double coverage here. India bringing in numbers, trying to hem Ireland in

:31:54. > :32:00.their own zone. Magnificent pressure from India. Eight minutes 20 seconds

:32:01. > :32:07.remaining in the first period. 20 remaining in the first half of

:32:08. > :32:13.this contest. Raghunath with a penalty corner. Into the first

:32:14. > :32:15.period, an exciting first period. Islands trying to find some offence.

:32:16. > :32:38.Jackson ahead. John Jermyn to the other side. A

:32:39. > :32:46.chance! Kyle Good could not find a handle but he got a chance, it's a

:32:47. > :32:51.penalty corner, the first four Ireland. An excellent ball. A good

:32:52. > :32:53.score in deed. You can see that was a good competing level from Kyle

:32:54. > :33:06.Good who plays for months -- Munster. It does not work out

:33:07. > :33:13.when they get the all-important penalty corner. Tying this contest

:33:14. > :33:20.up against the fifth-ranked team in the world, India. The injector is

:33:21. > :33:28.Kyle Good. Good, made the play happen. Causing that chance on the

:33:29. > :33:41.penalty. Magnificent! 1-1, John Jermyn. Magnificent set piece from

:33:42. > :33:55.Ireland, and John Jermyn will get his 91st international goal.

:33:56. > :34:28.India are moving forward. Seven minutes to go in this half...

:34:29. > :34:41.The goal was not awarded... Ireland protested, that was the right call

:34:42. > :34:45.from the referee and it remains 1-0. Paul Gleghorne, they have two shake

:34:46. > :34:53.that off and move forward. Islands down the side, Chris Cargo to

:34:54. > :35:04.Jackson. That India's ball. Physically taken

:35:05. > :35:09.off the ball, tripped by Alan Sothern. Perhaps trying to take some

:35:10. > :35:18.liberties. We know that Cedaro Singh can be temperamental at times...

:35:19. > :35:35.Perhaps trying to gain an advantage -- Sardara Singh. But it will not

:35:36. > :35:37.work there. Conor Harte. Across the pitch, five minutes 40 seconds

:35:38. > :35:43.remaining. Heart break for Ireland on that site

:35:44. > :35:48.-- set piece. The goal was disallowed. Ireland

:35:49. > :35:57.showed you that team ethos, when they get chances on short corners,

:35:58. > :35:59.penalty corners, they can punish. Sreejesh...

:36:00. > :36:07.They haven't tried to move the offence forward. Now, on cue, they

:36:08. > :36:13.are in the scoring D, Raghunath tries to

:36:14. > :36:18.move it forward. Five minutes to go in the second

:36:19. > :36:26.quarter, and of course the first half, a fall of the pool B Mac

:36:27. > :36:38.pool B action from the Deodoro Stadium. Magee to John Jermyn, who

:36:39. > :36:47.thought he had scored and equalised on a penalty. He got his 91st

:36:48. > :36:50.international goal, or so he thought.

:36:51. > :36:57.Moving forward, a second penalty corner, can they get the same idea

:36:58. > :37:00.and get the ball past Sreejesh? And make sure that there are no

:37:01. > :37:10.infractions on the actual penalty... Have a look at the action here...

:37:11. > :37:16.Into the feet... The right call is made. At this level. You don't have

:37:17. > :37:22.a chance to get the ball on it. This is where the game is won, on these

:37:23. > :37:27.penalty corners. Spot play from Ireland, putting it

:37:28. > :37:43.into the feet of Chand and. And now, a penalty corner. No goal.

:37:44. > :37:51.Harte put all of his six frame into that, dragging the flick... -- six

:37:52. > :37:55.frame into that. Once again, execution not quite

:37:56. > :38:08.there on the penalty corner for Ireland. Raghunath. Across to 23,

:38:09. > :38:14.India are happy that this is a 1-0 lead, but they want the pace and

:38:15. > :38:19.tempo they set early in the first period. They had wave after wave,

:38:20. > :38:24.coming forward against Ireland. Four penalty corners, they scored on

:38:25. > :38:31.one, Raghunath. Now, Ireland are back in the contest. Still a 1-0

:38:32. > :38:40.lead in favour of India. Rum and deep tries to get into the zone...

:38:41. > :38:55.-- Ramandeep Singh. Ireland are troubled in the D. That was smart

:38:56. > :38:59.play in deed from Uthappa. Into the feet... The referee had the call.

:39:00. > :39:03.Smart play from Uthappa, hammering the ball across the crease. It is a

:39:04. > :39:16.fifth penalty corner. Ramandeep Singh injects the ball,

:39:17. > :39:50.and again, magnificent execution! Rupinder, with his 56th

:39:51. > :39:56.international goal. Magnificent ball control, and again... I think that

:39:57. > :40:01.Harte sees it. Credit where it is due, it's like a rocket coming at

:40:02. > :40:18.you on the drag flick. It is 2-0 to India. Rupinder, another penalty

:40:19. > :40:26.corner comes to haunt Ireland. Rupinder, player of the tournament

:40:27. > :40:30.in the 2016 hockey India league. It shows why there. His 56th

:40:31. > :40:43.international goal and a penalty corner. WHISTLE

:41:08. > :41:10.corners, we often see them in international hockey in the men and

:41:11. > :41:17.women's games, it comes down to be set pieces. Ireland have had two.

:41:18. > :41:23.But violations within the scoring D. They need a chance to get on the

:41:24. > :41:29.board. India have had five and been successful twice, Raghunath in the

:41:30. > :41:32.first quarter, Rupinder in the second. Two minutes to go in the

:41:33. > :41:39.first half. WHISTLE Shane O'Donoghue... The cash deep

:41:40. > :41:48.wants to substitute in for India. The head coach begins to use his

:41:49. > :41:52.substitutes -- Akashdeep. Managing the heat and managing fresh legs on

:41:53. > :42:00.both sides of the ball. It's imperative on day one. Harte... A

:42:01. > :42:10.quick pass forward there by Sean O'Donoghue. -- Shane O'Donoghue, who

:42:11. > :42:15.turns and retreats. India are happy to lob it high, and relieve the

:42:16. > :42:25.pressure. Shane O'Donoghue plays in Belgium for the KHC Dragons. It's

:42:26. > :42:33.another chance for Ireland, once again substitutions coming in on

:42:34. > :42:42.both sides. A referral now... As we await,

:42:43. > :42:55.Vasquez goes to the video umpire. Quickly ahead by Bell. Into his

:42:56. > :43:04.feet. O'Donoghue, we wait for the referral. Paco Vasquez, an

:43:05. > :43:15.electrical engineer and his day-to-day life. 130th cap as a

:43:16. > :43:22.referee today. We are awaiting the referral. Akashdeep wants to come

:43:23. > :43:26.off, and Manpreet Singh. For India. The late stages of the

:43:27. > :43:35.first half. 58.6 seconds in this period.

:43:36. > :43:42.Bell brings the ball forward. O'Donoghue at the top of the D.

:43:43. > :43:54.Ireland are hoping that they will get the penalty corner. They are

:43:55. > :43:59.awaiting the word. Vasquez, 58.6 seconds left in this half, Ireland

:44:00. > :44:03.want to get something on the board, something positive, as time winds

:44:04. > :44:15.down. Trailing by a couple of goals against India.

:44:16. > :44:19.An incredible statistic. 62 Olympic titles for India between 1928 and

:44:20. > :44:23.1956. It is an incredible milestone, eight

:44:24. > :44:31.goals overall in Olympic history for India.

:44:32. > :44:37.In 11 total medals, one silver, two bronze, but since 1980 they have not

:44:38. > :44:41.had any luck. No penalty quarter, the referral

:44:42. > :44:48.works in favour of team India. That's not what the head coach on

:44:49. > :44:52.the Irish side would have wanted. It's the right call made, it looked

:44:53. > :44:56.like it was at Shane O'Donoghue's feet.

:44:57. > :45:00.India have 45 seconds remaining in the half and they want to be first

:45:01. > :45:06.goal, they wanted to get a view on the board, so far so good for the

:45:07. > :45:09.fifth ranked team in the world -- a view.

:45:10. > :45:12.Ireland have a lot of work to do, 35 seconds left and they need to keep

:45:13. > :45:28.their eye on the price defensively. Singh gets its back, Agnes and play

:45:29. > :45:33.from HArte -- Harte. Akashdeep comes on with fresh legs. Watch Harte, as

:45:34. > :45:38.quick as he can, moving so well for a big man. It is a penalty corner

:45:39. > :45:49.once again, the sixth of the contest.

:45:50. > :46:03.A second penalty quarter -- corner of the quarter.

:46:04. > :46:13.The captain Sardara Singh will inject this ball. Panic stations,

:46:14. > :46:18.troubled time for Ireland. A quick shot and a magnificent strike

:46:19. > :46:23.blocked down and Ireland tried to transition. With just 11 seconds to

:46:24. > :46:26.they are trying to find Darling in behind the defence. An incredible

:46:27. > :46:33.action and to end there. Four seconds remaining in the half. Sunil

:46:34. > :46:50.will hit it and it comes off an Irish lake. As the half and it is

:46:51. > :46:56.India to, Ireland no score. In the second it was the first goal for

:46:57. > :47:00.Rupinder Pal Singh. His first in the Olympics but his 56th overall

:47:01. > :47:10.internationally. At the end of one half it is India two, Ireland no

:47:11. > :47:14.score. That was always going to be a tough

:47:15. > :47:18.ask for Ireland. They trailed by two goals to nil and they have 215

:47:19. > :47:22.minute periods to try get back into the game. Before we get back to the

:47:23. > :47:25.hockey in the second half we will rattle through some of the action

:47:26. > :47:30.going on around the grounds right now. That's big queue that I showed

:47:31. > :47:37.you before the hockey has moved on and they are all into the tennis

:47:38. > :47:45.which is where we are going to go right now and there is loads of an

:47:46. > :47:47.Titian nation around this tournament right now, not least for Great

:47:48. > :47:49.Britain because the flag-bearers is the Olympic champion and Andy Murray

:47:50. > :47:59.has been drawn against Viktor Troicki in the opening round as he

:48:00. > :48:02.seeks to retain his title. Novak Djokovic takes on Juan Martin Del

:48:03. > :48:06.Potro of Argentina but that is not until tomorrow. We have Kyle Edmund

:48:07. > :48:10.involved in the singles draw for the men as well and Heather Watson is

:48:11. > :48:14.coming up next and Johanna Konta is involved in doubles action today.

:48:15. > :48:17.Not singles until tomorrow. We look forward to seeing Heather in action

:48:18. > :48:25.this afternoon very shortly, but not before we get a result between Italy

:48:26. > :48:33.and the Netherlands. It is on Court number three at the moment. The

:48:34. > :48:38.Dutch woman leads. It is on serve, 5-4 in the opening set. Heather

:48:39. > :48:47.Watson is up in court after that match. So, right now the men's road

:48:48. > :48:51.race, Chris Froome is in action and they have been going for a couple of

:48:52. > :48:55.hours and a half in that one. Along the coast at Copacabana. Chris

:48:56. > :48:59.Froome is hoping to add Olympic gold to the three Tour de France wins

:49:00. > :49:06.that he has already scored. You can see that one right now, as we speak,

:49:07. > :49:13.with 143 kilometres to go over on the BBC sport website and the app as

:49:14. > :49:22.well. Also. We have got men's double sculls in the rowing. That is down a

:49:23. > :49:29.Copacabana. We have the silver medallists trying to go for the

:49:30. > :49:35.final. You can see that on the website. Britain's great railway

:49:36. > :49:37.Kath Grainger is paired up with her new women's double sculls partner,

:49:38. > :49:41.Vicky Thornley and they have qualified second in their heat for

:49:42. > :49:46.the second -- semifinals. We will see them progress in the

:49:47. > :49:50.competition. Now for a look at handball. The Dutch women's team

:49:51. > :49:55.have started their campaign for a handball medal. They reach the 2015

:49:56. > :49:58.World Championship final and they are up against France in the early

:49:59. > :50:09.stages there but the French are leading. It is 6-3. More Dutch women

:50:10. > :50:13.over in the volleyball. As you can see it is orange against red. The

:50:14. > :50:17.Chinese players are wearing blue just now. It is orange against blue,

:50:18. > :50:22.Netherlands against China in the opening game just that, and it is

:50:23. > :50:31.three points apiece. Oh, there is a fourth for China! Over at the

:50:32. > :50:36.Aquatics Centre we have got men's water polo. That is Spain taking on

:50:37. > :50:40.Italy. You can see all of this, by the way, over on the BBC sport

:50:41. > :50:45.website and the BBC sport app. Pick your sports and give your life.

:50:46. > :50:52.Water polo 1-1 against Italy and Spain. Over at the Deodoro we saw

:50:53. > :50:59.sparked -- France beating Spain in the very first rugby sevens match in

:51:00. > :51:03.Olympic history and the second game of the women's competition New

:51:04. > :51:08.Zealand, the three-time world Series champions were well on top against

:51:09. > :51:20.Kenny down there, and another try to boot. Let's see this go over the

:51:21. > :51:24.post. That is 26 20 that they lead Kenya. Same with the rugby, we

:51:25. > :51:33.remind you that the Great Britain women ( pen against a post, Brazil.

:51:34. > :51:38.That will be on BBC One 4pm. The New Zealand team are hot favourites for

:51:39. > :51:44.the metal and they will have a good competition with Australia in this

:51:45. > :51:49.one. We will see how the New Zealand team can get on and wrap up more

:51:50. > :51:53.points against Kenya. We sit with this at the Deodoro Stadium and then

:51:54. > :52:12.we will be back with the hockey very shortly.

:52:13. > :52:20.Kenya will want to get some point is, if it comes down to a battle for

:52:21. > :52:24.those slots for qualification in the quarterfinals. They will need some

:52:25. > :52:42.point in their favour and switch direction again. The pressure means

:52:43. > :53:00.that New Zealand have a line-up. It opens up.

:53:01. > :53:07.The ball really gets into place so quickly and the handling skills of

:53:08. > :53:11.the New Zealand team is just fantastic. New Zealand are rotating

:53:12. > :53:23.their team and giving everyone a run out in this first game.

:53:24. > :53:32.Five conversion tries to the all Blacks. Kenya are yet to score. They

:53:33. > :53:38.need to get their hands on the ball and show what they can do. If they

:53:39. > :53:46.have possession, Kenya do have a slightly unusual strategy but

:53:47. > :53:56.because they are all speedsters they will sort of kick and chase. They

:53:57. > :54:03.have so little of the ball Portia Woodman chases the restart. She has

:54:04. > :54:10.kicked the ball straight out and that was the first minor error she

:54:11. > :54:13.has made. There are five converted tries, not just converting the tries

:54:14. > :54:18.but she overcooked that slightly. Kenya will be glad to get their hand

:54:19. > :54:29.on the ball and it is just whether they can withstand the physical side

:54:30. > :54:31.of the New Zealand game. They're just having a go at the New Zealand

:54:32. > :54:59.defence. They are off again. Hat-trick of tries for Portia

:55:00. > :55:04.Woodman. I've been really impressed with Kenya. The way she holds people

:55:05. > :55:08.with two hands, she is a really impressive player and it is the

:55:09. > :55:18.first time I have seen her play live. -- Kelly Brazier. Nathan Wong

:55:19. > :55:25.prepares this difficult conversion that she hasn't missed yet. New

:55:26. > :55:32.Zealand ring the changes. To Reza Fitzpatrick is on. Up against the

:55:33. > :55:50.post and the first Miss. This New Zealand team are a tough

:55:51. > :56:04.team. Nathan Wong has been wonderful. A big round of applause.

:56:05. > :56:13.Just brilliant. A safe catch. Kenya took it on the board. Oh, dear. Not

:56:14. > :56:17.gone. The canyons are struggling here. This is the second ranked team

:56:18. > :56:28.in the tournament, New Zealand, a very physical team. Kenya are

:56:29. > :56:50.struggling a little bit here with the quality.

:56:51. > :57:01.Woodman is dancing and weaving and Sarah Goss is taking the straight up

:57:02. > :57:14.the middle route. An easy run in. The tries finally scored.

:57:15. > :57:24.That was probably one of the best tries we have seen. The way they

:57:25. > :57:30.keep passing and we talk about their netball skills. This is a tournament

:57:31. > :57:36.with a really world-class team in New Zealand. The bigger teams,

:57:37. > :57:43.Australia, Team GB and Canada and America, they will be watching this

:57:44. > :57:47.and they will be pretty impressed. The canyons are not the greatest.

:57:48. > :57:57.Opposition that this is a good first run and a huge marker. -- Kenya

:57:58. > :58:06.team. Kelly Brazier needs to go another foot. That will be a New

:58:07. > :58:13.Zealand offer and scrummage for the line-out.

:58:14. > :58:31.Line-out. Scrummage. We keep tossing up! Just watch the quality of the

:58:32. > :58:39.passing down the left hand. Fitzpatrick to McAllister. Now then,

:58:40. > :58:49.McAllister. She didn't quite have the speed to get away. She had the

:58:50. > :58:55.strength to get away from Celestine Masinde. It is just stop and go and

:58:56. > :59:01.if anyone is chasing you you can reduce your speed slightly and

:59:02. > :59:07.McAllister is wonderful to watch. I am really enjoying this New Zealand

:59:08. > :59:11.performance. It is a really quality team and every single player on this

:59:12. > :59:16.team has been very impressive. They look good. Kelly Brazier doesn't

:59:17. > :59:23.have the two points but it doesn't matter. New Zealand are over 50. 52

:59:24. > :59:27.points they have beaten Kenya. One of the star teams of the women's

:59:28. > :59:36.sevens circuit has negotiated the first round with ease. New Zealand

:59:37. > :59:40.52-0 against Kenya. That was a bit of a training match

:59:41. > :59:45.in the end for New Zealand. It was too fast and pacey and two fleet of

:59:46. > :59:49.foot. They won by a half-century of points against Kenya there. We will

:59:50. > :59:54.show you rugby sevens later on in the competition but let us go to the

:59:55. > :59:58.hockey arena now and join Ireland against India. They are into the

:59:59. > :00:02.third quarter of the second half and there are no goals in the first five

:00:03. > :00:03.or six minutes or so so it
