:00:00. > :00:00.against India. They are into the third quarter of the second half and

:00:00. > :00:00.there are no goals in the first five or six minutes or so so it is

:00:07. > :00:10.Ireland with India still leading by 2-0.

:00:11. > :00:39.COMMENTATOR: Eight minutes 30 seconds left in the third period,

:00:40. > :00:44.it's the second half. If you are a hockey fan, I watched

:00:45. > :00:53.in London, there were two 35mm hearths, in Rio it is for 15 minute

:00:54. > :01:04.quarters. Surinder Kumar goes back to Rupinder. He got the second goal

:01:05. > :01:16.for India. Ireland with a 23 metre hit, going across the field. Bell

:01:17. > :01:22.goes right back. More substitutions for Ireland. John Jermyn comes on.

:01:23. > :01:29.He is one of the danger men, one of the good goal-scorers for Ireland.

:01:30. > :01:37.Wearing number 11 for the team in white and green. Danish, with the

:01:38. > :01:50.left corner. Akashdeep pose the ball along the line but it will be

:01:51. > :01:54.Ireland's ball. The Irish coaching staff are on their feet down to my

:01:55. > :01:59.right, and talking about a quick ball, they want to begin to push the

:02:00. > :02:03.pace here, and get India on the back foot, it has not been easy because

:02:04. > :02:10.the Indian defence is magnificent, led by this man, Rupinder. With a

:02:11. > :02:15.goal in this game, showing that he can play in all zones. On this

:02:16. > :02:22.Olympic hockey pitch, Raghunath tries to find Singh. Akashdeep puts

:02:23. > :02:31.it in. Into the D. Kicked away by David Harte. Have it hard, taking no

:02:32. > :02:42.chance whatsoever there. With the wily Captain, Cedaro Singh, lurking.

:02:43. > :02:53.His 248th game internationally for India. -- Sardara Singh. Raghunath

:02:54. > :03:01.with his 215th game for India today. Trying to hit it past Harte, but it

:03:02. > :03:11.sneaks back. Raghunath has a word with the referee. Looking to come

:03:12. > :03:15.back into the 23. Rupinder, a lightning quick pass, and you can

:03:16. > :03:20.see the quality of the past. The quickness of it from India. As he

:03:21. > :03:24.said earlier in the broadcast, you can see how well the field plays.

:03:25. > :03:31.All of the male and female teams practised their field of play moves

:03:32. > :03:35.well. It is a really nice facility, you can see when that Indian pass

:03:36. > :03:48.was so crisp and on target. Rupinder is so good at that, as is his

:03:49. > :03:53.team-mate. Raghunath, strong and the ball. Into the top of the D.

:03:54. > :04:00.Akashdeep with a hit at it. It goes wide. Dangerous, you can see the tap

:04:01. > :04:10.of the past from India. It is magnificent to see. Ireland have two

:04:11. > :04:16.title up -- have to tighten it up, Kirk Shimmins, it's a free hit to

:04:17. > :04:21.Ireland. O'Donoghue, and a lob ball. The right idea, you can see that

:04:22. > :04:26.they wanted the pitch, obviously, that was a slip from the Indian

:04:27. > :04:31.defender. Out of bounds, a lob ball, it's the right idea, trying to

:04:32. > :04:35.spring someone forward for Ireland, but it is too fast, bouncing on the

:04:36. > :04:44.wet pitch. It's a watered-down surface. Raghunath, with the lob

:04:45. > :04:50.pass to Manpreet Singh. Great speed from him, bouncing away. O'Donoghue

:04:51. > :04:57.relieves pressure from Ireland. Darling. Forced out and it's a

:04:58. > :05:06.sideline hit for Ireland. O'Donoghue back to heart. -- Harte. Harte, up

:05:07. > :05:12.the left-hand side. Harte tries to find a seam down the right-hand side

:05:13. > :05:22.for Ireland. Harte, head up. Goes by Nikkin. Quick hands for Sardara

:05:23. > :05:26.Singh. Good from the Indian captain. Akashdeep, a lone ranger moment. All

:05:27. > :05:33.alone, but now he has reinforcements. Man read off to the

:05:34. > :05:39.flank, he has the ball. -- Manpreet Singh. Nikkin tries to punch it.

:05:40. > :05:45.Ireland scrambling. Surviving that dangerous moment. Led by Akashdeep,

:05:46. > :05:50.India was so fast in transition. You can see why they were second in the

:05:51. > :05:55.champion's Trophy. Pushing 119 in the world, Australia winning the

:05:56. > :06:05.champions Trophy. But they had to get to the shoot out against India.

:06:06. > :06:12.Kothajit Singh. Good play. Darling tries to get it to the halfway line.

:06:13. > :06:18.He had Kyle Good out there. But did not turn back in. Ronan Gormley,

:06:19. > :06:23.trying to take a quick ball. He does not like the call from the

:06:24. > :06:42.Australian umpire. They come back to the 15. It's a green card, two

:06:43. > :06:49.minutes for Uthappa, their first of the game. Can Ireland use this? A

:06:50. > :06:52.turning point, perhaps? Ireland, bringing numbers forward, you know

:06:53. > :07:03.that John Jermyn will go forward, he hears. -- here hears, he is from

:07:04. > :07:07.Cork. Good hands, shooting the ball. A great drag flick on the penalty

:07:08. > :07:13.corner in the first half. Thought he had Ireland on the board but it did

:07:14. > :07:17.not work out. Trying to refocus. Hell, one minute 50 seconds

:07:18. > :07:26.remaining in this third quarter. -- Bell.

:07:27. > :07:37.Magee will take it on 23, a long chance for Ireland.

:07:38. > :07:43.Nice hands, you can see again. The defenders for India do not fall for

:07:44. > :07:53.any trickery. A nice block tackle, sweeping the ball away. Magee. A

:07:54. > :07:57.stick violation, that's a free hit for Manpreet Singh. India are

:07:58. > :08:05.unrelenting with a quick outward pass. Ireland try to stay with them,

:08:06. > :08:11.good goes down the right-hand side. Kothajit Singh. Raghunath takes the

:08:12. > :08:21.sideline three, backed Kothajit Singh. -- back to Kothajit Singh.

:08:22. > :08:26.2-0 to India, two penalty corners, they have the fifth-ranked team out.

:08:27. > :08:32.A 12 goal cushion on the 12th ranked team from Ireland. Good pressure

:08:33. > :08:37.from Kirk Shimmins. Put into the feet of Manpreet Singh, but Ireland

:08:38. > :08:44.break into the D, and it's a penalty corner. Smart play from Ireland.

:08:45. > :08:48.Bringing out all of the stops. They need to claw one back with 27.7

:08:49. > :08:51.seconds remaining in the third period they know that they need

:08:52. > :09:00.something here and something positive. India, by some stretches,

:09:01. > :09:05.have had things their way. Paul Gleghorne comes on in substitution

:09:06. > :09:16.for Ireland, again. Using all of the substitutes. Cargo is the injector

:09:17. > :09:19.for Ireland. Magee lines up, no surprise to see John Jermyn just

:09:20. > :09:27.outside of the D. It looks like Magee might be the trap here.

:09:28. > :09:36.Michael Darling at the top of the circle for Ireland. Cargo, trapped,

:09:37. > :09:44.drag flick and John Jermyn! They have got one back. 2-1. John Jermyn!

:09:45. > :10:01.The drag, flick and goal. Ireland are back in the contest. Worked to

:10:02. > :10:05.perfection, backed by Mitch Darling. The goalkeeper reads and reacts, but

:10:06. > :10:15.John Jermyn with pinpoint accuracy gets Ireland on the board. Heating

:10:16. > :10:26.it to perfection. What a finish ahead. 2-1, India over Ireland. John

:10:27. > :10:31.Jermyn with his first in the 2016 Olympics. His 91st international

:10:32. > :10:38.goal for Ireland and it comes at a great time. They finally get a

:10:39. > :10:46.result with a penalty corner. India 2-1 Ireland after three quarters.

:10:47. > :10:55.It's a perfect time to score a goal to get them back in the game.

:10:56. > :11:00.ORE: 2-1, it's another 15 minute period to come, to get themselves

:11:01. > :11:04.level, and maybe even take the lead against the five-time Olympic

:11:05. > :11:09.champions. That match taking place at the Hockey Centre in Deodoro. Not

:11:10. > :11:12.far away, we can check in on the rugby sevens, the Great Britain

:11:13. > :11:19.women are opening their Olympic rugby sevens campaign. They got off

:11:20. > :11:30.to a pretty good start. Joe what more, with the opening try for Great

:11:31. > :11:33.Britain. -- Jo Watmore, taking on the hosts Brazil. They finished

:11:34. > :11:37.fourth in the World Series and you would have expected them to open up

:11:38. > :11:43.more of a points gap but it was only up to 7-0 after that try from Jo

:11:44. > :11:48.Watmore. Katy McLean stepped up to take the conversion. You may

:11:49. > :11:53.remember that she was the World Cup winning champion for England a

:11:54. > :11:58.couple of years ago. Emily Scarratt is the captain of this Great Britain

:11:59. > :12:04.rugby sevens team, Michaela Maclean added an extra couple of points to

:12:05. > :12:10.take Great Britain 7-0 ahead. But... Result were not done with the first

:12:11. > :12:16.half. -- Brazil. A drop-kick penalty, closing the gap to just

:12:17. > :12:22.four points. So, 7-3 is the score a couple of minutes ago in the first

:12:23. > :12:26.half. This match is live on BBC One. As we join it here, we can see that

:12:27. > :12:31.they are at the interval and approaching the second half. Great

:12:32. > :12:36.Britain playing hosts Brazil, leading only marginally 7-3. They

:12:37. > :12:40.kick off the second half, that's on BBC One right now. Now, we go back

:12:41. > :12:46.to the hockey because quarter four is up and running. Ireland are 2-1

:12:47. > :12:52.down against India, and Aaron Murphy can tell us all about quarter number

:12:53. > :12:57.four. COMMENTATOR: Late in the third quarter, John Jermyn with his 31st

:12:58. > :13:03.international goal for Northern Ireland, making it 2-1. India back

:13:04. > :13:12.on the tackle. Ireland looking to forge any chances now, trying to

:13:13. > :13:16.keep on the ball. 14-25 minutes left in the contest. John Jermyn with a

:13:17. > :13:22.magnificent penalty corner in the first half, disallowed, an

:13:23. > :13:25.infraction spotted by the referee in the scoring circle, no mistaking

:13:26. > :13:37.that chance in the third quarter by John Jermyn. It is a 2-1 contest on

:13:38. > :13:40.pitch two. The spectators, and the atmosphere has been magnificent.

:13:41. > :13:51.Treated to a very good hockey games here. At the 2016 Rio Olympics.

:13:52. > :13:55.Darling was good on that penalty goal, one of the trappers, they have

:13:56. > :14:00.India moving the wrong way on that John Jermyn goal. That goal was

:14:01. > :14:03.expertly taken. The timing, sometimes, that is a situational

:14:04. > :14:10.point in the game where Ireland needed a result. They got it from

:14:11. > :14:18.one of their most dangerous drag flickers. Their danger man,

:14:19. > :14:22.Raghunath and Rupinder, they've done exactly as build coming into the

:14:23. > :14:35.tournament. 13 minutes 30 seconds remaining...

:14:36. > :14:41.Harmanpreet Singh, watched... India testing the resolve and

:14:42. > :14:47.defence Corps of Ireland, keeping defenders moving. Heat and fatigue

:14:48. > :14:52.could be a factor. Both of the coaches have used their

:14:53. > :15:01.substitutes expertly. Trying to keep the guys hydrated and fresh.

:15:02. > :15:07.Singh, knocked off the ball. Paul Gleghorne, a shoulder in. It's

:15:08. > :15:15.a free hit for India. Cottage at Singh, all the way back to Rupinder.

:15:16. > :15:20.It's a towering figure. He has the go-ahead goal for India. India

:15:21. > :15:24.testing on the right-hand side and trying to get by the big Conor

:15:25. > :15:31.Harte. -- Kothajit Singh. No easy feat, at six feet five inches, he

:15:32. > :15:32.has a big reach. Turning India back. Ireland in transition over the

:15:33. > :15:43.halfway line. Michael Watt has provided a lot of

:15:44. > :15:51.energy. He has had a lot of jump on his legs for the coach. Sardara

:15:52. > :15:55.Singh has been very good for India today, very disciplined. Here's

:15:56. > :16:11.their captain and he shows his veteran savvy in this contest.

:16:12. > :16:15.Pushed forward by Manpreet Singh. Hart keeps it out of harm 's way.

:16:16. > :16:22.They are back in this contest and they don't want to concede at this

:16:23. > :16:25.point. Kota Jeet Singh is in the corner but in the want an insurance

:16:26. > :16:35.marker. They know that Ireland will not give up and they want another.

:16:36. > :16:48.A good entry there into the scoring circle for Chinglensana Singh

:16:49. > :16:59.Kangujam. They are on penalty corners. David Harte and his four

:17:00. > :17:03.defensive colleagues on that line will have to do extra here. They

:17:04. > :17:10.will have two activate off the line and try and get out with the drag

:17:11. > :17:14.flickers of India. David Harte is a towering presence in there for

:17:15. > :17:34.Ireland but as we have seen this is something that India does so well.

:17:35. > :17:39.They have got another! A magnificent job by Rupinder Pal Singh. We will

:17:40. > :17:44.look back. We have an injury to an Irish defender. There is Rupinder

:17:45. > :17:49.Pal Singh, the goal-scorer. He has got two. Let us see what happens

:17:50. > :17:57.here. It catches John Jackson right there. Watch Rupinder Pal Singh. He

:17:58. > :18:01.is six foot four and ?200 and he leans into that. This is a better

:18:02. > :18:06.look at how Jackson... He is tied up there and that has got to sting and

:18:07. > :18:11.maybe more so is the fact that the ball is in the net, but Jackson is

:18:12. > :18:17.bravely defended the right side of the goal and Rupinder Pal Singh just

:18:18. > :18:24.put too much on that. It is 3-1 to India. Rupinder Pal Singh has his

:18:25. > :18:30.second penalty corner goal of the game and his 57th International

:18:31. > :18:39.golfer India overall in his career. -- his 57th international goal for

:18:40. > :18:44.India. All three of India's salvos were off the set piece. In the third

:18:45. > :18:51.quarter John Jermyn, a penalty corner goal for Ireland to make it

:18:52. > :18:55.2-1, but right there, the six foot four figure of Rupinder Pal Singh

:18:56. > :19:02.makes it 3-1. The player of the tournament in the 2016 hockey India

:19:03. > :19:07.league showing you why he is such a force on the world scene. You never

:19:08. > :19:12.want to see an athlete injured but John Jackson is so grave that. There

:19:13. > :19:17.is a good example folks of what it takes to be a hockey player at this

:19:18. > :19:21.level or any level. When you are one of those defensive players charged

:19:22. > :19:25.with guarding the goal on a penalty corner, you are going to take bumps

:19:26. > :19:30.and bruises and write their John Jackson gave his all to try and keep

:19:31. > :19:36.the ball out of the net. Unfortunately Rupinder Pal Singh had

:19:37. > :19:40.too much on the drag flick. It went off of Jackson and into the top of

:19:41. > :19:47.the net and it will be a 3-1 scoreline in favour of India with

:19:48. > :19:53.11-15 remaining in the fourth period. The crowd a nice round of

:19:54. > :19:58.applause therefore Jackson as he tries to walk off the sidelines

:19:59. > :20:08.under his own power but he will be helped off by some of the backroom

:20:09. > :20:13.staff the team Ireland. We will keep an ion Jackson. He took an awful

:20:14. > :20:22.knock there on that magnificent shot full from Rupinder Pal Singh. Pre-1

:20:23. > :20:27.to India. There is plenty of time to go in the fourth quarter. 10.40

:20:28. > :20:38.exactly. Ireland will have to keep their chins up and keep coming

:20:39. > :20:43.forward. That is too far. Right there for Devinder Sunil Walmiki and

:20:44. > :20:57.it will be a side hit for Harte. It goes back to the 20 metre line. And

:20:58. > :21:05.battling. Sardara Singh is all over Gormley fare. The Ireland team

:21:06. > :21:10.Doctor and the physiotherapist are working on John Jackson right now.

:21:11. > :21:15.Hopefully he will be OK for Ireland. Bravely tried to block that shot

:21:16. > :21:25.from Rupinder Pal Singh. He was Sardara Singh. Sardara Singh into

:21:26. > :21:32.the corner and Devinder Sunil Walmiki in front. Hart strolls

:21:33. > :21:39.across I gets a kick at that. He has to do -- he had to because Akashdeep

:21:40. > :21:43.Singh was right there. If India score then it might have been too

:21:44. > :21:46.long a comeback for Ireland but a great play from Harte and you can

:21:47. > :21:48.see why David Harte is the captain of this team and one of the top

:21:49. > :22:06.goalies in men's hockey. Harmanpreet is Singh has good fast

:22:07. > :22:12.feet and decides to go back to Rupinder Pal Singh and why not.

:22:13. > :22:18.Akashdeep Singh was right there at Harte had it right under control.

:22:19. > :22:25.Ireland survive another attack from team India. 8.42 remaining in the

:22:26. > :22:31.fourth period. India three, Ireland one. Raghunath Vokkaliga with a

:22:32. > :22:38.penalty corner for India to open up the scoring. India have three on the

:22:39. > :22:44.scoreboard. John Jermyn is the lone tally for Ireland, his goal also won

:22:45. > :22:54.a penalty corner. Arts knocks forward. Shane O'Donoghue. The for

:22:55. > :23:05.McGee and two shamans. Into the scoring Serkin. Kirk Shimmins keeps

:23:06. > :23:09.on it. He tried to weave into the zone and he puts into the feet right

:23:10. > :23:15.there of Devinder Sunil Walmiki and that is a smart play from Kirk

:23:16. > :23:19.Shimmins. His club as the Pembroke Wanderers and this is his 75th game

:23:20. > :23:23.for Ireland. He has great presence of mind in the double coverage and

:23:24. > :23:27.he knows he will not get to the net but he puts it into the feet of

:23:28. > :23:31.Devinder Sunil Walmiki and it will be a penalty corner for Ireland.

:23:32. > :23:39.They have had some success in this second half of the penalty corners

:23:40. > :23:43.so they will try once again. The injector this time will be Kyle

:23:44. > :23:53.Good. It was Cargo on the Jermyn goal. Kyle Good will take the

:23:54. > :23:57.injector mantle here for Ireland. Kirk Shimmins looks to want to track

:23:58. > :24:05.it down and the key is also ready to shoot. Eugene Magee tracks it down

:24:06. > :24:16.and the umpire is not happy. He is not happy with Kyle Good. It looks

:24:17. > :24:20.like they will do it all again. Good will not want to hesitate or try and

:24:21. > :24:26.fake here, just get the ball in quickly now that he is being

:24:27. > :24:34.watched. It comes in with Dragon flick and a good play. The right

:24:35. > :24:43.idea. But you can see the class of PR Sreejesh.

:24:44. > :24:56.Sreejesh as quick as a cat. Sreejesh in his 100 international appearance

:24:57. > :25:02.for India and here showing why he is one of the top keepers in this

:25:03. > :25:06.tournament. Good back to Eugene Magee. Drag flick which did not work

:25:07. > :25:20.out and Sothern try to turn and hit that towards the net.

:25:21. > :25:24.Sothern tried to argue that the first runner broke to quickly and

:25:25. > :25:32.they are going to look at this and it is now a referral. 7.09 remaining

:25:33. > :25:34.in the fourth period and it is India 3- Ireland one. Let us have a look

:25:35. > :25:48.at it. Eugene Magee drops it down. Sothern,

:25:49. > :25:56.he turns to try and choke up and get that it's a way. Alan Sothern is in

:25:57. > :26:04.great shape. He is a personal trainer. Dublin born player. The

:26:05. > :26:14.forward could not get the shot away as they wait on the referral and

:26:15. > :26:20.frescoes calls for the video umpire. -- the referee calls for the video

:26:21. > :26:26.umpire. It take another look at the penalty takers for Ireland. There is

:26:27. > :26:32.Sothern and Eugene Magee has had a good game, the Green machine as

:26:33. > :26:41.well. Kyle Good was the injector. Ireland's lone goal coming on a

:26:42. > :26:51.penalty corner. They await the video umpire ruling to come back.

:26:52. > :26:58.It will be overturned in favour of India and it will not be another

:26:59. > :27:03.penalty corner for team Ireland. India are happy with that decision

:27:04. > :27:14.from the video umpire. It will remain 3-1. 7.09 remaining in the

:27:15. > :27:15.fourth period of hockey here. Second-half action from Paul B,

:27:16. > :27:30.pitched in. -- pool would be. Dotted work on the ball from Kirk

:27:31. > :27:34.Shimmins and this is exactly what the coach will want from Ireland.

:27:35. > :27:38.They are down by a couple of goals but they have to come forward now.

:27:39. > :27:52.Less than seven minutes to go in this contest. Rupinder Pal Singh

:27:53. > :27:56.with a 50 metre ball here for India. Here is Raghunath Vokkaliga and he

:27:57. > :28:01.bounces off his stick and it will be a plain out for Cargo. Raghunath

:28:02. > :28:05.Vokkaliga has not put a foot wrong in this game. Here is Michael Watt,

:28:06. > :28:13.trying to dance around Raghunath Vokkaliga but it didn't work out.

:28:14. > :28:18.Cargo gives it to Paul Gleghorne. It is his 155th International cap for

:28:19. > :28:20.Ireland and he sweeps it all the way back to Gormley who has been steady

:28:21. > :28:44.for Ireland all game long. ORE:. Ireland have it all to do and

:28:45. > :28:49.I am afraid we are going to leave this now. We have had a really busy

:28:50. > :28:50.first day so far and we will bring you up-to-date with the headlines so

:28:51. > :29:01.far. We had our first gold medal of the

:29:02. > :29:05.games which went to Virginia thrash of the United States and she beat

:29:06. > :29:20.the reigning champion from China to take the title. -- Virginia

:29:21. > :29:22.Thrasher. In the judo the Commonwealth champion beat the

:29:23. > :29:36.player from Turkey in his opening bout. The British boxer has got

:29:37. > :29:43.through to the last 16 after beating Cameroon. So, we have left the Irish

:29:44. > :29:47.game against India but we will stay with hockey right now because it is

:29:48. > :29:51.time for great great -- the Great Britain meant to make their bow. You

:29:52. > :29:54.may remember that at London 2012 they had a hammer blow against the

:29:55. > :30:01.Netherlands in the semifinal, beaten no less than 9-2 in that game and

:30:02. > :30:04.they then went off to lose against Australia 2-1 in the third-place

:30:05. > :30:08.play-off so an agonising fourth place the result and they have come

:30:09. > :30:18.to Rio to change that result. We will go down to Deodoro right now to

:30:19. > :30:22.join Richie Posada and a two-time champion and this team are so

:30:23. > :30:26.talented, it is about time they won some silverware.

:30:27. > :30:32.Fourth at the Olympics in 2012, and in the champions Trophy recently,

:30:33. > :30:36.ranked fourth in the world, that seems to be their theme but it is

:30:37. > :30:39.time for them to be on the podium? Yes, this team does not lack

:30:40. > :30:44.confidence, they are here to win a medal. It will be tough against

:30:45. > :30:48.Belgium, the last two times they've played against each other it has

:30:49. > :30:52.been draws, he'd could be a factor. A quick word about the fact that we

:30:53. > :30:55.have a lot of experienced players in our team, like Barry Middleton in

:30:56. > :30:59.his fourth Olympics, they will be the kind of guys that he is looking

:31:00. > :31:04.to, and there is experience around him? Yes, Ashley Jackson is a corner

:31:05. > :31:09.penalty specialist, Harry Martin is young with a bright future ahead of

:31:10. > :31:13.him. It will be a fascinating game. Belgium are ranked two places below,

:31:14. > :31:17.Australia ranked number one in the world, how difficult is it for them

:31:18. > :31:21.to finish higher up in the group? I would imagine they would be in the

:31:22. > :31:25.first four? Yes, I think they will definitely make the top four. They

:31:26. > :31:29.will be expected to beat Brazil and then it boils down to getting a

:31:30. > :31:32.victory against Belgium or Spain to get into the top four. Let's go over

:31:33. > :31:40.to our commentators with Matt Chilton and Simon Mason.

:31:41. > :31:44.COMMENTATOR: Great Britain are off to a shaky start, a bit of

:31:45. > :31:49.miscommunication midfield, they have conceded a penalty corner. Belgium

:31:50. > :31:54.are in already, in a huddle, looking for the chance to get the first goal

:31:55. > :31:58.on the scoreboard here, who is going to do the drag flicking? Who will

:31:59. > :32:05.inject this one, Simon Mason? It will come to the top, Simon

:32:06. > :32:09.Gougnard, it seems that they are only running... It is two click

:32:10. > :32:13.options. Flicked back inside and over the top, it's a good

:32:14. > :32:24.opportunity for Belgium and an interesting move. A slip, going

:32:25. > :32:31.under the ball, too much right hand, it goes over the crossbar. An early

:32:32. > :32:35.opportunity for Belgium, the first serious scoring chance. An aerial

:32:36. > :32:39.ball, it's a chance for Great Britain to go forward, looking for

:32:40. > :32:43.someone to be in the middle, and it's the chance for someone to get

:32:44. > :32:49.on top. A free hit for Belgium. Super interchange, Sam Ward on the

:32:50. > :32:55.baseline, he needs to look for a foot, he did not have passing

:32:56. > :33:04.options inside of the D. Simon Gougnard, inside. It goes to the

:33:05. > :33:10.right for Belgium. An aerial ball. Looking long but well controlled. A

:33:11. > :33:19.shimmy over the top, and it's a good chance for Belgium... Pinner comes

:33:20. > :33:25.in to make a key interception. Nicely done by the British

:33:26. > :33:30.goalkeeper. Penna had done really well, as the baseline attack came

:33:31. > :33:37.in, getting a strong right-hand. He had to be on alert. Catlin was

:33:38. > :33:41.bundled off it, four down the line, and Alastair Brogdon was unable to

:33:42. > :33:47.control it. Too hot to handle that time.

:33:48. > :33:51.A reminder, we play four periods of 15 minutes with a ten minute break

:33:52. > :33:58.at half-time after the second period.

:33:59. > :34:02.Intercepted, and pushed forward. Ashley Jackson. One of the most

:34:03. > :34:05.talented members of the British team, we will look for him at the

:34:06. > :34:13.set piece opportunities, and that's pushed behind. A smooth interchange

:34:14. > :34:17.between Jackson and Sloan, there was not enough pace, looking for that

:34:18. > :34:24.interception. Henry Weir on the pitch for Great Britain. Iain Lewers

:34:25. > :34:28.on the right-hand side, a bit of space for him and he takes his time,

:34:29. > :34:30.looking for a way through to the circle.

:34:31. > :34:36.Cut out... Read gathered for Great Britain. -- gathered again for Great

:34:37. > :34:40.Britain. Iain Lewers does the injections,

:34:41. > :34:46.generally, when Great Britain have a penalty corner. Looking to get the

:34:47. > :34:48.ball onto a Belgian third. The Belgian goalkeeper called into

:34:49. > :34:53.action for the first time. In action.

:34:54. > :35:06.-- in anger. It was a reflex save from Vincent panache. Plunging the

:35:07. > :35:17.ball across the circle. Back to Vincent Vanasch, creating the goal

:35:18. > :35:21.chance -- Vincent Vanasch. The searing heat of the afternoon...

:35:22. > :35:33.Neither team was expecting this. In their first match. Jackson, running

:35:34. > :35:38.across the face of the goal, giving support on the left-hand side, but

:35:39. > :35:42.it goes, almost, to the Belgian side, but it is picked up and

:35:43. > :35:56.Britain have the chance to create something here. Henry Weir. Catlin,

:35:57. > :36:00.into the circle. Condon that well. Catlin set up a pass, a left right

:36:01. > :36:05.shimmy to create an opportunity. Great Britain were lucky with

:36:06. > :36:22.Jackson, across the top of the day without any support.

:36:23. > :36:30.Great Britain are looking for a way out. Trapped in the corner here, and

:36:31. > :36:34.pushed all the way back. Space and an interception for Belgium.

:36:35. > :36:40.Training here, a shot on goal... The first goal of the match for Belgium.

:36:41. > :36:47.It was too hot to handle. Turned over at the top of the circle. I

:36:48. > :36:51.think it was Miss trapped, Belgium easily into the day, Penna will wish

:36:52. > :36:55.that he did better. His left hand was in the wrong place.

:36:56. > :37:01.-- George Pinner. First goal to Belgium after six minutes. George

:37:02. > :37:06.Pinner is disappointed, in this trap, popped in. Lasted through

:37:07. > :37:11.George Pinner's left hand. Should have been a bit more aggressive,

:37:12. > :37:17.Team GB and George Pinner will be disappointed, a cheap goal to give

:37:18. > :37:27.away. To roam trimmers on the scoreboard for Belgium. Nine minutes

:37:28. > :37:42.and 12 seconds remain, Great Britain are behind -- Jerome Truyens.

:37:43. > :37:48.We are in the pool stages of the competition, Great Britain are

:37:49. > :37:54.playing in Pool A, Belgium are their opponents today. New Zealand and

:37:55. > :37:58.Brazil, Australia and Spain, we have quarterfinals in the tournament this

:37:59. > :38:02.year as well. In the past we have had classification matches. Straight

:38:03. > :38:05.to semifinal matches, we have quarterfinals, semifinals and

:38:06. > :38:13.finals, at this stage it is three points for a win, and one for a

:38:14. > :38:19.draw. Georgia Dome and came through, brushing off Middleton as he breezes

:38:20. > :38:21.through the midfield -- John-John Dohmen.

:38:22. > :38:28.They are turning it over a little easy Lee at the moment, allowing

:38:29. > :38:32.Belgium to counter. Belgium deep in their half, on the

:38:33. > :38:34.right-hand side, looking for a way down the left-hand side. They have a

:38:35. > :38:54.lot of options. An injection of pace. The ball is

:38:55. > :38:57.left behind. Belgium at the moment are happy to maintain possession.

:38:58. > :39:03.With an early goal, they can afford to. It makes it so hard for the

:39:04. > :39:07.opponent, if you are happy to hold the ball for 30 seconds and make

:39:08. > :39:15.your opponent run, you create a real fatigue factor. There is trouble

:39:16. > :39:25.still for Great Britain as they try to defend their way out of trouble.

:39:26. > :39:30.WHISTLE A free hit just outside of the

:39:31. > :39:34.circle. The aerial ball is aimed for Henry

:39:35. > :39:40.Weir, doing well to control it, a shimmy inside. All about going left,

:39:41. > :39:48.then eventually it goes right. An infringement from the Great Britain

:39:49. > :39:52.number 22, David Condon. He led really well outside, a delightful

:39:53. > :39:56.overhead from Iain Lewers to find Henry Weir, he saw, done going but

:39:57. > :39:58.has he tried to turn, tackling once again, their feet towards the goal.

:39:59. > :40:13.-- David Condon. Gauthier Boccard looking for this

:40:14. > :40:17.one for Belgium. Giving his thumbs up to his team-mate, happy with the

:40:18. > :40:20.delivery, the pick-up was the problem for Belgium there. Great

:40:21. > :40:24.Britain are looking to regroup from just outside of their circle now.

:40:25. > :40:34.Six minutes of the first period of play... That is what is remaining.

:40:35. > :40:38.Martin picking it up and keeping it in play, over the top of the Belgian

:40:39. > :40:40.stick. Good play from Martin. WHISTLE

:40:41. > :40:48.It is a free hit. I think we will see a card. Cosyns

:40:49. > :40:51.has had three little dabs at that, a green card, Martin comes down the

:40:52. > :40:56.right-hand side, popping up and accelerating through the stick.

:40:57. > :41:00.Foul. One of the Belgian players took a hit on the hand, in a bit of

:41:01. > :41:04.trouble. A backhand attempt on the goal, snubbed out. High ball

:41:05. > :41:12.attraction, it is a free hit for Belgium. One man down. An injured

:41:13. > :41:20.man, Gauthier Boccard, with a crack on the back of his hand. Gauthier

:41:21. > :41:27.Boccard is feeling that... Ten man Belgium, leading Great Britain by

:41:28. > :41:32.1-0. Ten man Belgium with most of the possession at the moment. Taking

:41:33. > :41:40.that one all the way to the corner, happily holding it up for a second

:41:41. > :41:45.or two. All more... -- or more. You need to somehow get his feet around

:41:46. > :41:50.so that he can see the goal, but Adam Dixon steps in with aggressive

:41:51. > :41:58.tackles. This is dangerous for Great Britain, a backhand! Saved by

:41:59. > :42:02.Pinner. Cedric Charlier with the attempted

:42:03. > :42:13.shot, Pinners was in the right place this time. An open goal, a bit of a

:42:14. > :42:17.mess, trap, Great Britain get away with it again. That is the

:42:18. > :42:19.goal-scorer, finding himself in the middle of the circle, Jerome

:42:20. > :42:23.Truyens. A lovely ghosted past in the middle

:42:24. > :42:30.of the D. Pinners was alert, sweeping in with a clearing

:42:31. > :42:34.right-hand. A sprint full down for the Great Britain captain, Barry

:42:35. > :42:38.Middleton, taking his place in the circle. Looking for service here

:42:39. > :42:52.from Ashley Jackson. Jackson, to the edge. Jackson with a free head.

:42:53. > :42:56.Dixon decides to go it alone. -- free hit.

:42:57. > :43:01.Here, a replay, a backhand shot into the pad of Pinner, does well to get

:43:02. > :43:09.his feet together, and then he hits it with his tow away. A good

:43:10. > :43:18.reaction, sweeping clear. -- hits it well with his toe. Three minutes of

:43:19. > :43:31.the first quarter to play. Belgium 1-0 Great Britain. Belgium are back

:43:32. > :43:34.up to full strength, 11th versus 11. -- 11 versus 11.

:43:35. > :43:38.Pace from Great Britain, as they come forward, towards the halfway

:43:39. > :43:42.line. Great pass from Mark Gleghorne, he

:43:43. > :43:46.can find Jackson. Fox has got it again, towards the

:43:47. > :43:57.edge of the circle and taken away by Belgium. Jackson, looking a little

:43:58. > :44:02.too eager and try to get the stick on the ball, pushing it out of play.

:44:03. > :44:05.Patience is required for Great Britain, as they attempt to forge

:44:06. > :44:14.their way back into the match. In these conditions, if you have the

:44:15. > :44:19.ball, you have to be maintained. Belgium on the rampage. Arthur Van

:44:20. > :44:27.Doren held up, pushed towards the circle quickly. Now out of the

:44:28. > :44:39.scoring circle. Behind, it's a free hit for Belgium again.

:44:40. > :44:45.Boccard, a change of direction, nicely done. Across the face of the

:44:46. > :44:51.goal, carrying a bit too much speed, that backhand cross. Cosyns on the

:44:52. > :44:56.far post, just half a metre away, looking to debate in past George

:44:57. > :45:05.Pinner. Coming in late. -- looking to put it in.

:45:06. > :45:12.Fox, having to go along. Could be in a bit of trouble. He has his eyes

:45:13. > :45:17.up. A bit more awareness of web spaces,

:45:18. > :45:26.giving team-mates time. -- where the space is.

:45:27. > :45:31.Overhead, and aerial ball taken out of the way quite nicely by the

:45:32. > :45:37.Belgian number seven. He was forced to come out. Belgian take the free

:45:38. > :45:42.hit quickly. It needs to be taken again because the umpire is not

:45:43. > :45:45.happy. Inside the 20 metres only umpire is making sure it is

:45:46. > :45:57.maintained and the ball as to go five before it goes into that

:45:58. > :46:01.circle. Red shirts everywhere. In off the body and there is trouble

:46:02. > :46:06.here for one of the Belgian players. There was a suggestion that is the

:46:07. > :46:09.face. We heard a crack from up here and we thought it was stick

:46:10. > :46:12.immediately because of the noise but their reaction there, even the Great

:46:13. > :46:29.Britain players calling the medical team on.

:46:30. > :46:41.The Belgian player is down and receiving attention. Clearly in some

:46:42. > :46:45.distress here. Both teams have broken and they

:46:46. > :46:48.would take a moment. There is professionalism and they will be

:46:49. > :46:50.concerned for a colleague but they know they have to to regroup and get

:46:51. > :47:07.messages from the coaching team. The Belgian staff and the medics are

:47:08. > :47:10.not taking any chances where a potential head or facial injury is

:47:11. > :47:17.involved. I wonder if the player will continue in this match. It

:47:18. > :47:25.looks unlikely, the amount of time he has spent on the floor. Running

:47:26. > :47:36.repairs now. The coach will not be concerned

:47:37. > :47:40.because he does not want to lose a player this earlier in the

:47:41. > :47:44.tournament. We have seen players in this case having to go all the way

:47:45. > :47:49.back to London but then coming back a few days later. The athletes are

:47:50. > :48:04.strong in both the men's and women's competitions.

:48:05. > :48:13.The player is back on his feet and that is a good sign. Sebastien

:48:14. > :48:18.Dockier took a thumping here and he is taken away from the field of

:48:19. > :48:24.play. There will be concerned for his welfare now. He will not be

:48:25. > :48:29.playing any further part in this match. There was blood on the

:48:30. > :48:34.artificial turf which needs to be cleaned up. This sport can be brutal

:48:35. > :48:39.at this level, at any level, but the boys and girls wear so little

:48:40. > :48:42.protection. The goalkeeper is potentially the safest player on the

:48:43. > :48:48.field in all the protective headgear and pads, but the outfield players

:48:49. > :48:55.have gloves and shin pads and that is about it. That position that

:48:56. > :49:02.Sebastien Dockier has got into will be the position that all coaches

:49:03. > :49:06.will and courage, getting wider and just giving extra weight to guide

:49:07. > :49:09.the ball in past the goalkeeper who can't reach it. -- all coaches will

:49:10. > :49:24.encourage. So, play continues. 1-0 to Belgium.

:49:25. > :49:37.The last 30 seconds of the first quarter. Jackson. For on the right

:49:38. > :49:42.for Great Britain. Barry Middleton is the captain, he is dictating the

:49:43. > :49:50.passage of play. It is high and towards the circle. There is no

:49:51. > :49:54.wonder -- from Sam Ward in the white headband and he tries to pick it up

:49:55. > :49:59.against the free hit and he dribbled his way to the edge of the circle.

:50:00. > :50:03.He had to do it all himself with the clock ticking down, it was all about

:50:04. > :50:08.what he could do and the chance he could create. The first period

:50:09. > :50:11.reaches its conclusion. 15 minutes played under serious head injury to

:50:12. > :50:14.Sebastien Dockier from Belgium but they have the upper hand and they

:50:15. > :50:22.lead 1-0 at the end of the first quarter. A dramatic first period of

:50:23. > :50:26.play so far. Belgium did look pretty sharp and they came out of the traps

:50:27. > :50:30.pretty well. Do they deserve the lead? I think so, there have been a

:50:31. > :50:34.massive amount of chances in the first quarter as you would expect in

:50:35. > :50:37.the opening game of the Olympics are a team that have played each other

:50:38. > :50:40.quite a lot quite recently. GB will be disappointed with the goal that

:50:41. > :50:44.was conceded because a couple of errors led to that goal but it shows

:50:45. > :50:48.that if you put a shot on target you never know what happens. Take us

:50:49. > :50:54.through that now. Was there any fault from George Pinner? Yes, I

:50:55. > :50:59.think so, but you have to go back to the start where there was no track

:51:00. > :51:02.from our defending side and as a result he just smashed the ball at

:51:03. > :51:06.the Golan George Pinner will be disappointed he didn't keep the goal

:51:07. > :51:09.out. We have seen a couple of injuries to the Belgian players, not

:51:10. > :51:16.just what we saw at the end of that first period but also an injury to

:51:17. > :51:21.Gauthier Boccard so they are a player short. Yes they have had a

:51:22. > :51:27.recurrence of a hamstring injury and because they are playing Brazil the

:51:28. > :51:32.coach has decided to rest him so if they lose another player, and that

:51:33. > :51:34.looked like a nasty injury at the end of that quarter, to play with

:51:35. > :51:39.two players down will be a pretty tough ask. We will break away

:51:40. > :51:43.briefly to tell you that before we joined this match you were watching

:51:44. > :51:49.the match between India and Ireland. India were leading 3-1. Ireland, I'm

:51:50. > :51:53.pleased to say, did get another goal and the final score was 3-2, but

:51:54. > :51:59.India have one and they go to the top of group B. The other match in

:52:00. > :52:03.that group between Argentina and the Netherlands was a dramatic match.

:52:04. > :52:08.Looking at how the match here has gone so far, what do we have to do

:52:09. > :52:12.to get the goal back? We just have to keep the ball make the Belgian

:52:13. > :52:18.players work and run. Our best is probably a penalty corner so put

:52:19. > :52:20.them under pressure and see what they can do. We will get back to the

:52:21. > :52:30.action and join our commentators. The second quarter is now underway

:52:31. > :52:34.and Belgium are hitting right to left. It is a chance to put George

:52:35. > :52:38.Pinner under pressure in the early stages but the danger is snuffed out

:52:39. > :52:42.for the moment at least. He simply had to keep the ball on the end of

:52:43. > :52:46.his stick in the circle and quite often as a defender you look for

:52:47. > :52:47.that and you lift your eyes and you get turned over so that the aim is

:52:48. > :53:04.really strong and precise. Hoare, through the centre, combining

:53:05. > :53:10.with captain Barry Middleton. Nice little work on the right-hand side.

:53:11. > :53:26.Great Britain, with Alastair Brogdon, and it will be a free hit

:53:27. > :53:30.to GB. They felt that they were impeding the play deliberately,

:53:31. > :53:36.Belgium. There are four British players in the circle. Jackson tried

:53:37. > :53:42.to stamp from on high. A bit of a swing and a Miss that time from

:53:43. > :53:46.David Ames. He is not going to the video referral even though he felt

:53:47. > :53:51.it was coming up dangerously off the Belgian state but he had a regional

:53:52. > :54:02.ball that a reasonable advantage from it.

:54:03. > :54:09.Martin. Nice control, he keeps it on the end of his stick and he looks up

:54:10. > :54:10.and sees what his options are but his lips as he tried to play that

:54:11. > :54:20.in. There is a card here for Simon

:54:21. > :54:26.Gougnard, the Belgian number 22 who goes off for a few minutes. We had

:54:27. > :54:30.just spoken about him, he had been won for the second phase tackle and

:54:31. > :54:34.there he just went behind Harry Martin who tried to snap at the feet

:54:35. > :54:44.in the way and it seems to be a deliberate foul. Jackson is taking

:54:45. > :54:47.his time. Into the circle, just behind the two white shirted British

:54:48. > :54:53.players who were ready and poised to strike. Henry Weir, what a

:54:54. > :54:56.delightful touch. Just to try and create opportunities to a ball that

:54:57. > :54:59.was pumped into the middle of the circle and he has led towards it. It

:55:00. > :55:01.is difficult to pick it up himself so he can deflect it across to a

:55:02. > :55:18.team-mate. Belgium are down to ten men. A bit

:55:19. > :55:24.of a shoulder charge at the Belgian defender. Nicely controlled from

:55:25. > :55:27.Iain Lewers. He makes it look so easy. It took the ball down with a

:55:28. > :55:28.half volley tactically inside forward. Delightful bit of simple

:55:29. > :55:47.skill. Great Britain are running out of

:55:48. > :56:15.time to exploit the extra man. In our ears we can hear the coach

:56:16. > :56:24.shouting, keep leading. A good save off the left and a George Pinner.

:56:25. > :56:27.Pushed away and out of danger. Belgium are still looking

:56:28. > :56:31.dangerously. They are threatening the circle once again. Over the top

:56:32. > :56:37.and looking for a British foot on the ball but none forthcoming. A bit

:56:38. > :56:41.of time for Britain to breakdown of this right-hand. Henry Weir down on

:56:42. > :56:47.his belly and now back on his feet. A free hit to Great Britain. A

:56:48. > :56:51.little fortune, I feel, for Great Britain. Harry Martin -- Henry Weir

:56:52. > :56:54.came through with a bit of good fortune. The Belgian captain was in

:56:55. > :57:05.the way of him being able to accelerate ball.

:57:06. > :57:18.This is a promising looking moment of pressure from Great Britain. They

:57:19. > :57:30.didn't last long. Ashley Jackson looking over his shoulder. That is

:57:31. > :57:33.nice work. A promising move here from Great Britain. The ball

:57:34. > :57:41.bouncing around frustratingly out of reach for the men in white shirts.

:57:42. > :57:44.Belgium just getting in touch. And believable run from Belgium, silky

:57:45. > :57:53.skills, all the way towards the edge of circle. Thomas Briels, is what he

:57:54. > :57:57.does so well, bursting through midfield and it was a delightful

:57:58. > :58:08.little dink to find space as he goes around that left-hand side of the

:58:09. > :58:15.Great Britain defence. Three white shirts in the circle. Great Britain

:58:16. > :58:25.are down a goal. 1-0 to Belgium. Nine minutes of the first half

:58:26. > :58:28.remain. Middleton. Nice work from Barry Middleton, the captain,

:58:29. > :58:30.looking to inspire his team-mates and become the plane maker here.

:58:31. > :58:46.They need something. What a pass from Iain Lewers to

:58:47. > :58:51.fight Martin in space. Martin towards the end. Can Great Britain

:58:52. > :58:54.create something here. A little burst of acceleration from Barry

:58:55. > :58:58.Middleton. He darts inside, confusing and confounding the

:58:59. > :59:04.Belgian defender. Middleton goes all the way across the face and it

:59:05. > :59:08.bounces out of danger. Again that right-hand side, down towards the

:59:09. > :59:11.baseline, Great Britain finding some space and Belgium immediately can

:59:12. > :59:34.use this as Great Britain poor men forward.

:59:35. > :59:40.Another -- and the heat is undoubtedly starting to play its

:59:41. > :59:42.part. The pace of the match has dropped significantly in the last

:59:43. > :59:45.four or five minutes but this is a good burst of speed from Belgium.

:59:46. > :00:00.Once again Barry Middleton is there to tidy up. Nicholas Catlin has done

:00:01. > :00:03.well and made a lot of ground. Condon again, unfortunately a few

:00:04. > :00:06.times he has led at the middle lead towards the quarter flight but he

:00:07. > :00:19.has failed to get his hand across the border enough to create the

:00:20. > :00:22.trap. David Ames getting his body between the ball and his opposing

:00:23. > :00:31.player. Straight down the centre line here for Great Britain. Back to

:00:32. > :00:35.regroup. You were talking about 30, and that is where, if players get

:00:36. > :00:39.tired and realise it gets narrow because it is easy to get the ball

:00:40. > :00:42.and start to try and go that space but mentally it is a real test to

:00:43. > :00:45.try and step away from the ball and create the width as the body starts

:00:46. > :01:00.to think about essentially survival in this heat.

:01:01. > :01:11.Showing some decent control for Great Britain, Ian Sloan. David

:01:12. > :01:26.Ames. Iain Lewers on the right, keeping it in play.

:01:27. > :01:34.Fox... The crowd getting a little restless, not much for the Great

:01:35. > :01:40.Britain supporters to enjoy so far. A chance -- no chances at the

:01:41. > :01:50.penalty corner yet, five minutes 45 seconds before home time. --

:01:51. > :01:53.half-time. Britain had superb possession stats in the champions

:01:54. > :01:57.Trophy, they just failed to find the killer touch, they did not convert

:01:58. > :02:01.that possession. The same in the first half now, finding the baseline

:02:02. > :02:08.both left and right side, the ball flashed across but nobody was on the

:02:09. > :02:28.end to get that controlling shot. Captain, nicely. -- kept in, nicely.

:02:29. > :02:37.Belgium, regrouping at the back, Van Doren switching out to the right,

:02:38. > :02:48.and he wants it back. John-John Dohmen to his left. Back to Boccard,

:02:49. > :02:53.off to the right. Let down, the service was good but the man picking

:02:54. > :02:56.it up was unable to control. The forward lead from Van Doren was

:02:57. > :03:00.similar to the one from Iain Lewers moments ago, it shows the

:03:01. > :03:04.versatility of these players, rolling through defensive lines into

:03:05. > :03:09.midfield, they become attackers. No longer do we have the specialist one

:03:10. > :03:14.position player. Barry Middleton, showing some signs of frustration as

:03:15. > :03:30.he fires the ball out of play. Not where he wanted it to go. Four

:03:31. > :03:35.minutes of the first half to play. Belgium 1-0 Great Britain. Belgium

:03:36. > :03:39.are looking to add to their tally, but possession is not regained by

:03:40. > :03:47.the men in white, the men in red thrusted forward once again, but it

:03:48. > :03:51.is over and out of danger. Brilliantly created in the end. The

:03:52. > :03:54.ball pops up in the circle, that Flash on the backhand trying to

:03:55. > :04:14.drive the ball out the circle from Cosyns.

:04:15. > :04:22.The ball is intercepted, Jackson not getting full contact. It was

:04:23. > :04:26.claiming that he was impeded but no matter, Jackson is able to create

:04:27. > :04:31.something, back in possession. Ashley Jackson flicks to the left,

:04:32. > :04:39.inside of the circle. Can they feed it through? What a strike! What a

:04:40. > :04:47.goal for Great Britain. Superbly put away by Nick Catlin. What a finish.

:04:48. > :04:52.It was all about Jackson, as you said, driving up, theses Catlin and

:04:53. > :04:57.he finds the space. Angles to narrow, it wheels off his right

:04:58. > :05:01.foot, smashes it goal bound, and that is delightful, going for the

:05:02. > :05:06.better option, popping it in the opposed, that is a delightful Nish

:05:07. > :05:12.for Great Britain's Catlin. What a time to strike. -- finish. Half-time

:05:13. > :05:15.approaching, under three minutes to go and Nick Catlin produces a moment

:05:16. > :05:24.of magic. Making the scoreline level. Belgium 1-1 Great Britain. We

:05:25. > :05:26.were talking earlier about how when fatigue comes in, mental

:05:27. > :05:30.decision-making gets a bit worse but for Catlin, that is brilliant,

:05:31. > :05:44.recognising he went to backhand, but had nothing, creating a shooting

:05:45. > :05:45.chance then with his forehand. Now, can Belgium

:05:46. > :05:55.respond with 40 minutes left in the half, both teams at 4-straight that

:05:56. > :06:03.the moment. WHISTLE Aerial, cut out. That's one of the

:06:04. > :06:07.rules the players found so difficult, it's meant to be all

:06:08. > :06:13.about being allowed to be taken down by the player under the, but for me

:06:14. > :06:21.it felt like Michael Hoare stepped into the space and was given benefit

:06:22. > :06:31.of the doubt. -- by the player under the ball.

:06:32. > :06:41.The last 90 seconds of the half... In the heat. It's day one of the

:06:42. > :06:46.Olympic hockey programme at the Deodoro Stadium. Eldon Forster

:06:47. > :06:51.strike, a miracle response from Nick Catlin moments ago. Can they add to

:06:52. > :06:55.the tally? Middleton takes it towards the circle. Catlin could not

:06:56. > :06:59.make contact that time. Middleton, just a bit too much adrenaline

:07:00. > :07:11.pumping through on the counter, Ward had to leave space for Catlin on

:07:12. > :07:25.the. A big touch from Michael Hoare, and there's a long corner. -- for

:07:26. > :07:28.Catlin on the ball. Pay striping significantly now, the

:07:29. > :07:34.players are aware of the time on the clock in the big-screen in the

:07:35. > :07:44.corner of the pitch here at Deodoro. Which one, a bit smaller, 5000

:07:45. > :07:50.capacity pitch to the West, Belgium are content to maintain possession

:07:51. > :07:55.-- we are on pitch one. One wall pushed towards the goal of

:07:56. > :07:59.Great Britain. The men in white need to be on their

:08:00. > :08:07.toes, they can count things down towards half-time. They will go into

:08:08. > :08:11.the break, level. An excellent first half year at the

:08:12. > :08:17.Deodoro Stadium with an early strike for Belgium, and Nick Catlin's

:08:18. > :08:22.response, three minutes from half-time, and the half-time score

:08:23. > :08:28.here on day one of the Olympic hockey programme, it is 1-1.

:08:29. > :08:32.That was an enjoyable half of hockey, both teams showing great

:08:33. > :08:36.skill, great attacking skill. Mel, Great Britain doing what you said

:08:37. > :08:41.they have two. Keep attacking and sticking to game plans, and it paid

:08:42. > :08:45.off? Yes, I thought they would get a second when Barry went forwards but

:08:46. > :08:49.patience is the key in that quarter. They kept possession well and Nick

:08:50. > :08:53.Catlin popped up with an equaliser. It was a moment of magic as they

:08:54. > :09:00.said in the commentary? It was brilliant, he rolled one way and the

:09:01. > :09:02.Belgian defender was tried to close down the backhand shot and he rolled

:09:03. > :09:06.onto his forehand, smashing it goalwards. I think that Vanasch

:09:07. > :09:12.would be disappointed, but it is 1-1. A wonderful moment for Great

:09:13. > :09:18.Britain. They've worked hard, we spoke about the heat and you have to

:09:19. > :09:22.conserve energy. Yes, but Team GB will be lucky, they have an

:09:23. > :09:26.acclamation chamber, I don't think anyone was expecting the weather to

:09:27. > :09:28.be this hard but that is why you have these rotations, unlimited

:09:29. > :09:34.numbers of substitutions, I'm sure that the coach looked at his team

:09:35. > :09:40.and thought, let's make changes quicker. It is 1-1 here at Diadora.

:09:41. > :09:47.Let's go back over to Ore Oduba. ORE:. Yes, let's check in with how

:09:48. > :09:54.our friends on BBC One are getting on. They are currently showing the

:09:55. > :09:57.men's rowing. Not only on the corner of this BBC for screen, but on BBC

:09:58. > :10:05.One as well. It's the men's lightweight four

:10:06. > :10:09.right now. But on BBC four, we are focusing on beach volleyball, it is

:10:10. > :10:14.a fantastic sport and fantastic venue, and because Brazil have the

:10:15. > :10:18.number one pair, the number one seed in the men's competition, featuring

:10:19. > :10:27.the mammoth and the magician, Alison Giroud T and Bruno Schmidt, taking

:10:28. > :10:32.on their Canadian compatriots. Here we go.

:10:33. > :10:44.Tait the Canadians will stay in here. Lovely from Binstock, and a

:10:45. > :10:49.poll level. Canada are really in this. It is a great fightback, 7-8

:10:50. > :11:12.apiece. Straight down the line from Bruno. A

:11:13. > :11:19.lot of room for the Canadians to move on that one. The atmosphere is

:11:20. > :11:38.bouncing at the Copacabana. 18-17 now, let's see what the

:11:39. > :11:48.Canadians can do here. Digging well, Bruneau tips it over. Desperation by

:11:49. > :11:53.both pairs. Well done to the Canadians. And what a rally, the

:11:54. > :12:07.Brazilians are frustrated with something. It's a yellow card

:12:08. > :12:20.warning. Look at the reaction of the two Brazilians there. Not entirely

:12:21. > :12:29.sure what they are so angry about. All tied up now, 18 each. It's an

:12:30. > :12:35.electric atmosphere here. That is a big hit from Bruno Schmidt. Just

:12:36. > :12:47.checking with the umpire that it was OK. Nothing wrong with that. Brazil

:12:48. > :12:50.19-18 Canada. Brazil are one set up. Just two points away from taking

:12:51. > :13:06.this match. The Canadians are fighting hard. Fingertips to that

:13:07. > :13:13.one, Bruneau. And that's clever play from the Canadians, straight down

:13:14. > :13:20.the line, and keeping it simple. Nice play over the top from Alison.

:13:21. > :13:23.At full stretch, Bruneau. Got it before it hit the sand. -- Bruno

:13:24. > :13:39.Schmidt. 19 apiece. The plot is in! It is a great block

:13:40. > :13:50.from Joshua Binstock. Set point to Canada. The Canadians are out of

:13:51. > :13:52.their seats. A fantastic effort from the Canadians, stretching the world

:13:53. > :14:08.champions here. -- the block is in. They keep it alive! Sensational

:14:09. > :14:17.scenes here. Such desperation from the Canadians, keeping the ball of

:14:18. > :14:29.the sand. -- off the sand. You have to admire that effort.

:14:30. > :14:43.It is all tied up, 20-20, in the second set. Time out.

:14:44. > :14:58.The crowd is loving this. Trying to get their home team across the line

:14:59. > :15:05.here in the second seat. The crowd are out of their seats. You have to

:15:06. > :15:13.give credit to the Canadians, they have stuck at that Brazilian pair

:15:14. > :15:17.here. Yes, especially early on in the second set, it looks like they

:15:18. > :15:23.were done and dusted, four points down, with not many left to go. Now,

:15:24. > :15:28.it's 20-20 and basically the first pair to get two points clear from

:15:29. > :15:34.now on. That will win the set, if Brazil do, they win the match. If

:15:35. > :15:36.Canada win the set, we go to a decider. And, it will be Alison, the

:15:37. > :15:59.man to serve. Brazil keep it alive. And Brazil win

:16:00. > :16:05.the point. He is calling for a challenge on this one. Binstock is

:16:06. > :16:22.fuming. It is going to go to the challenge referee. Such a vital

:16:23. > :16:41.point here. Yes. If they lose it, Brazil have match point. It looks

:16:42. > :16:50.like the touchers from the Canadian. The challenge I think is given

:16:51. > :17:01.unsuccessful. The Canadians have got to regroup here now because it is

:17:02. > :17:07.match point for Brazil. There it is. The set doesn't come off and Brazil

:17:08. > :17:17.take victory. Alison and Bruno are victorious.

:17:18. > :17:23.ORE: so the first win of the competition for the number one pair

:17:24. > :17:31.there from Brazil. They did not have it all their own way there. 21-19

:17:32. > :17:35.and 22-20 to win that by two sets to love. It is getting popular here at

:17:36. > :17:39.the village. When you joined us at the start of the day there was only

:17:40. > :17:43.a smattering of fans but as you can see behind me we are buzzing on the

:17:44. > :17:46.park. We will now go back over to the Deodoro north of us here and

:17:47. > :17:55.join Rishi Persad Mel Clewlow because things are tied in the men's

:17:56. > :17:57.hockey. 1-1 between Great Britain and Belgium.

:17:58. > :18:02.It is a great atmosphere here. We are about is that the third period

:18:03. > :18:07.and I know it sounds boring, but it really is the old adage of just keep

:18:08. > :18:11.doing what they were doing in that first half. Yes, I think the first

:18:12. > :18:16.quarter you can put down to first game nerves and it is the Olympic

:18:17. > :18:19.Games but in the second quarter they played more as they would want to I

:18:20. > :18:21.think the message from the manager is to play how they did in that

:18:22. > :18:26.second quarter and be patient. The weather system is set up this year

:18:27. > :18:30.at the Olympics with four out of the six teams going through to the

:18:31. > :18:33.quarterfinals perhaps there is less pressure on getting that first

:18:34. > :18:37.result although I am sure they will want to. The way the quarterfinals

:18:38. > :18:41.are set is the higher up you finish in your pool of the better because

:18:42. > :18:45.you get knocked out they will rank you with no classification matches

:18:46. > :18:49.so it is just about getting to that top four but you also have an eye on

:18:50. > :18:53.the other pool to see who you might be playing against. We will see how

:18:54. > :18:55.we get on and the third period is underway so we will join the

:18:56. > :19:02.commentators once again. Thank you. Welcome back the third

:19:03. > :19:05.quarter is underway. Belgium are in all red and they are hitting from

:19:06. > :19:08.left to right and Great Britain had a brilliant goal towards the end of

:19:09. > :19:17.the second half from Nick Catlin who was right back in it, 1-1 in the

:19:18. > :19:23.third quarter now. Simon Mason, how would you like to see the British

:19:24. > :19:30.team approach this third-quarter? I agree with what Mel and Rishi Persad

:19:31. > :19:33.were talking about because they are getting into the baselines and not

:19:34. > :19:37.really putting the end of the stick in the circle. For me this is a

:19:38. > :19:42.massive game for the man may need to set the tournament up by taking into

:19:43. > :19:45.account the importance of it. They need to stop Belgian right here and

:19:46. > :19:51.they have done so and scrambled away by David Ames. He has tackled and

:19:52. > :20:00.the ball ricochets towards the circle. It will be a Belgium hit.

:20:01. > :20:03.That second phase play is so important as David Ames carried out

:20:04. > :20:06.of his own circle and he did really well and just as he took his eyes

:20:07. > :20:09.off it the Belgians hadn't given it up and they chased it back and all

:20:10. > :20:19.of a sudden Great Britain under pressure again. He has taken a hit.

:20:20. > :20:24.It looks like Sam Ward. Sam Ward is hoping to walk or run that. He is

:20:25. > :20:37.happy to carry on. A free hit to Belgium.

:20:38. > :20:43.Over on the right-hand side, the Belgian number 17, Thomas Briels, a

:20:44. > :20:51.lot of power and invention. He goes behind and a free hit to Belgium. On

:20:52. > :20:59.the edge of the circle. All the way back to Emmanuel Stockbroekx who

:21:00. > :21:01.puts it inside. Belgium on the edge of the circle in the push forward

:21:02. > :21:04.and Great Britain are desperate trying to avoid any contact with

:21:05. > :21:09.both feet and they have got a penalty corner. A penalty corner to

:21:10. > :21:14.Belgium. Great Britain invited the pressure and I feel that if they

:21:15. > :21:17.defend as they sag too deep and allow Belgium to get into their

:21:18. > :21:20.circle, Jackson coming back with a tackle anti-pop the ball out but

:21:21. > :21:28.unfortunately found a foot in the circle of Fox. If you are going to

:21:29. > :21:31.set your deep defence back on your own 20 metre line it is absolutely

:21:32. > :21:34.fine but you still need to have a point to play and you need to keep

:21:35. > :21:44.the opponent to one side of the pitch or the other. Simon Gougnard

:21:45. > :21:48.will inject for Belgium. They have a line-up with seven of them and Great

:21:49. > :21:53.Britain defenders are charging the ball bravely. A second opportunity

:21:54. > :22:02.but it is a goal for Belgium. These second half begins perfectly for

:22:03. > :22:08.other side from Belgium. The goal goes in. A duplication of the first

:22:09. > :22:15.penalty corner for Belgium. Up to the top from Simon Gougnard. Tanguy

:22:16. > :22:19.Cosyns makes no mistake and hit with huge strength he brings it ran from

:22:20. > :22:23.right to left and keeps it flat with right-hand dominance and eight goes

:22:24. > :22:32.through George Pinner's foot and there was nothing he could do.

:22:33. > :22:36.Belgium two, Great Britain won, although the scoreboard in the arena

:22:37. > :22:42.still shows 1-1 and it hasn't quite caught up with the current

:22:43. > :22:46.scoreline. The Belgian supporters don't like it because they can see

:22:47. > :22:54.that it is still showing 1-1 but it is blatantly 2-1 to Belgium. Yes, it

:22:55. > :22:59.is so difficult for a team at any point to take a cue off a PC that

:23:00. > :23:02.you have seen before. It is that pull off double bluff and Great

:23:03. > :23:05.Britain haven't seen it once did know if they would run it again or

:23:06. > :23:17.not. Fox had to commit as the number one runner. And lovely glow part was

:23:18. > :23:21.able to find the space. This is a group stage match with three points

:23:22. > :23:24.for a win and one for a draw and nobody goes out of the Olympic

:23:25. > :23:28.hockey tournament at this stage. There are two pools of six and it is

:23:29. > :23:38.the same for the women and great Britain are in a pool with Belgium,

:23:39. > :23:42.New Zealand and Spain. That is a beautiful pass, superbly controlled.

:23:43. > :23:48.Great Britain looks clear of their lines and onto a red stick here.

:23:49. > :23:52.Across the face of goal and a good save from George Pinner who was down

:23:53. > :23:57.on his belly and he brushstrokes the ball away. This time there was

:23:58. > :24:00.nothing he could do about it. Belgium have three and a Great

:24:01. > :24:06.Britain one. The gold from Simon Gougnard. Second and third phase

:24:07. > :24:10.offence from Belgium. George Pinner did brilliantly to stop the ball in

:24:11. > :24:13.front of his goal but in sweeping it clear a pot to Simon Gougnard. How

:24:14. > :24:18.Great Britain didn't get a tackle, we see here as it pots out it comes

:24:19. > :24:22.in. This is where Belgium worked the baseline than George Pinner died on

:24:23. > :24:26.front of it and -- died on top of added brilliantly but it was that

:24:27. > :24:30.swayed and what a bit of skill to dink through the British defenders

:24:31. > :24:39.lakes and then he absolutely drilled it. George Pinner here somehow back

:24:40. > :24:42.across goal to deny Belgium the first time but the second phase from

:24:43. > :24:50.Simon Gougnard, there was nothing he could do. Great Britain have it all

:24:51. > :24:54.to do. Just under 11 minutes of the third quarter to play and Great

:24:55. > :24:58.Britain are attacking again and will get another penalty corner, a

:24:59. > :25:05.decisive piece of pressure from Sebastien Dockier. -- Belgium are

:25:06. > :25:08.attacking again... Iain Lewers was reaching but he flashed stick on

:25:09. > :25:11.stick contact to give away the penalty corner. A crucial penalty

:25:12. > :25:14.corner defence now for Great Britain. They will obviously not

:25:15. > :25:23.want to allow this 2-goal deficit to go to three. Belgium are in a huddle

:25:24. > :25:31.full stop meanwhile Great Britain have padded and masked up, ready to

:25:32. > :25:34.try and defend this. The danger here is that Great Britain will throw too

:25:35. > :25:38.many men to the edge of the circle and suddenly someone like Simon

:25:39. > :25:43.Gougnard will become free. Here we go, here is the flick. Left behind,

:25:44. > :25:48.the danger isn't over yet, and a desperate piece of defence, down on

:25:49. > :25:52.its advice from Michael Hoare. A great piece of defence and it was

:25:53. > :25:55.indeed Simon Gougnard at the ball went when we had the flick and the

:25:56. > :25:58.disguise at the edge of the circle, to the slip leg movement that

:25:59. > :25:59.Belgium have executed so well and they found the baseline to the

:26:00. > :26:15.injector. Nicholas Catlin gets possession and

:26:16. > :26:19.he looks around and decides to take it on himself. The scorer of the

:26:20. > :26:24.only Great Britain goal late in the second period, the end of the first

:26:25. > :26:31.half. He has now gone off the pitch for a breather. Great Britain need a

:26:32. > :26:34.goal and they need it soon. On the left-hand side, drilled in towards

:26:35. > :26:40.the edge of the circle but nothing but red shirts over there. Mark

:26:41. > :26:52.Gleghorne is looking for the double transport and Iain Lewers is the

:26:53. > :27:05.recipient of a double pass. -- a lovely pass.

:27:06. > :27:16.That is nice skill from Gleghorne. Hoare, now on the edge of the

:27:17. > :27:21.circle, still no luck for Great Britain. It is offer British foot

:27:22. > :27:25.and yet to get an opportunity from the penalty corner, Great Britain.

:27:26. > :27:29.Yes, so pick that up to give forward and it was outside his left foot and

:27:30. > :27:34.he was looking for a little lifted ball which the coaches will turn 3-D

:27:35. > :27:42.skills and he wanted it to pot up but it didn't get enough elevation

:27:43. > :27:47.so it ran into the defender. Belgium are playing with the confidence of a

:27:48. > :27:53.3-1 lead. Just happily passing the ball around, happy to maintain

:27:54. > :27:56.possession. Meanwhile, more desperate play from the British

:27:57. > :28:02.defenders here who are forced back into their circle and a free hit to

:28:03. > :28:06.Belgium. Again it is the second phase. David Ames has run back and

:28:07. > :28:10.made the tackle by doesn't get the ball cleanly under control so Simon

:28:11. > :28:13.Gougnard can just keep little poke and little jab tackles to get the

:28:14. > :28:14.ball back and all of a sudden the British defence and attack -- under

:28:15. > :28:42.pressure again. A little dink over the top. Belgium

:28:43. > :28:45.are in no great rush here. They will be relatively comfortable with the

:28:46. > :28:48.scoreline but they will know that the history of games between these

:28:49. > :28:52.two sides, several of the last games have ended up in drawers after

:28:53. > :28:55.Belgium have been in the lead and Great Britain or England have come

:28:56. > :28:58.back into those matches so all of a sudden they will not be content to

:28:59. > :29:13.sit on their laurels and invite pressure.

:29:14. > :29:20.A nice bit of skill on the right. Left behind, cleverly done. A good

:29:21. > :29:24.interchange between the two British players and they are forced away to

:29:25. > :29:30.the edge. That will be a Belgian ball. All Martin needed to do was a

:29:31. > :29:34.delightful interchange, as you say, between him and Sloan, but all of a

:29:35. > :29:37.sudden he had Alastair Brogdon on his outside and try to come inside

:29:38. > :29:40.when you pull the ball right to left to run onto the flat stick and you

:29:41. > :29:45.enable the turnover from the opponent. A Great Britain ball for

:29:46. > :30:04.David Ames. Into the centre now. Dixon on the left. He stops and

:30:05. > :30:10.stalls. He goes back to Hoare. A little turn and go. A little turn

:30:11. > :30:15.and go attempt from David Ames. Still Great Britain are in

:30:16. > :30:21.possession. That was the last ditch Sweet tackle from Sebastien Dockier,

:30:22. > :30:24.that is one of those tackles you go for because you know you out of

:30:25. > :30:30.position. If you missed the ball and a stick tackle down the umpire will

:30:31. > :30:33.ask you to take a seat. 31 degrees at the moment, thank goodness for

:30:34. > :30:40.the breeze which is just taken the edge of the temperatures here this

:30:41. > :30:45.afternoon. Great Britain with the free hit.

:30:46. > :30:53.Ashley Jackson weighs up his options. That was not the option he

:30:54. > :30:58.would have preferred... You have two feel that the coach would quite

:30:59. > :31:02.actually like to see a bit more from his experience players. Catlin is

:31:03. > :31:08.one of them, delivering that exceptional goal. From our position,

:31:09. > :31:15.it does not look like he's been as involved as we would have expected.

:31:16. > :31:22.Stock bricks, getting into a little bit of trouble. He manages to get

:31:23. > :31:27.himself out of it, -- Emmanuel Stockbroekx. Great Britain coming

:31:28. > :31:35.back in numbers. Jackson with Fox behind him, going further back. Now,

:31:36. > :31:51.Dan Fox, with time and space. A poor delivery from Daniel Fox. A great

:31:52. > :31:54.take from David Ames, stick from right to left, leading in strong.

:31:55. > :32:07.That was based on a mistake from David Ames. Belgium are threatening

:32:08. > :32:14.again, leading 3-1. An aerial ball, switching sides and pushing towards

:32:15. > :32:20.the circle. Great Britain, way... Barry Middleton, turning. Leaving

:32:21. > :32:22.his opponent on the deck. A good reach from Ashley Jackson, tucked

:32:23. > :32:52.in, but nobody to pick it up. 3.5 minutes of the third quarter to

:32:53. > :32:56.play. The worrying thing for me is that Great Britain, while they have

:32:57. > :33:00.had a reasonable amount of possession, I do not think they've

:33:01. > :33:04.troubled Vanasch in the goal for Belgium, other than that touching

:33:05. > :33:08.the first three or four moments, they have not created any

:33:09. > :33:12.significant high-pressure. That has brought the man in Black, the

:33:13. > :33:16.Belgian goalkeeper, into action. You are a former goalkeeper, how much

:33:17. > :33:22.weight do you lose on it holiday like this with that gear on? Like

:33:23. > :33:29.this, between warm up, a goalkeeper would consume in the first hour, the

:33:30. > :33:31.match itself, and cool down, 8-10 litres during that period, because

:33:32. > :34:00.they sweat it out beneath that kit. The ball bounces out of play,

:34:01. > :34:04.Britain comeback. But did not last long, bulging with some space and an

:34:05. > :34:11.open channel down the centre, they go right... Unbelievable work from

:34:12. > :34:18.John-John Dohmen, going high. Behind David Ames. A good tackle. Terrific

:34:19. > :34:23.work. From the Great Britain number five, David Ames. Talk about

:34:24. > :34:29.last-ditch. John-John Dohmen got behind him, David Ames gets enough

:34:30. > :34:32.of a touch, it comes off his deck, of John-John Dohmen, Great Britain

:34:33. > :34:42.get possession. Hitting the first line wrong by about one metre -- it

:34:43. > :34:45.comes off his stick. Belgium, threatening the Great

:34:46. > :34:54.Britain Circle once again. 90 seconds of that period remaining.

:34:55. > :35:00.Great Britain are desperate to avoid going 4-1 down. Just 15 minutes or

:35:01. > :35:05.so left to play. All men, back to defend. Jackson

:35:06. > :35:08.flex it through, and indecisive clearance from Ashley Jackson.

:35:09. > :35:14.Hoping that Great Britain do not pay the price here. Uncharacteristic

:35:15. > :35:17.from Jackson, with the ball on the end of his stick. Superb vision but

:35:18. > :35:21.it felt like a click away into space, if you do that, you want to

:35:22. > :35:27.go wide away from the goal. -- flick. Into the final minute,

:35:28. > :35:28.Belgium are fancying their chances of increasing the scoreline in their

:35:29. > :35:48.favour. Belgium, hustling. A free hit, a lot

:35:49. > :35:52.of shouts from Barry Middleton to keep his men concentrating here...

:35:53. > :35:58.It goes dangerously close but thankfully, from a British point of

:35:59. > :36:01.view, off the right post of George Pinner, that is probably the final

:36:02. > :36:05.play of the period. Pinner with a right hand, a flash

:36:06. > :36:12.from Van Doren to punch it back into the far post. His team-mate, Michael

:36:13. > :36:16.Hoare, suggesting what I felt, the original free hit, the umpire did

:36:17. > :36:19.not specify where it had gone and because of that indecision, the

:36:20. > :36:24.Great Britain defenders backed away so they did not get a penalty corner

:36:25. > :36:29.infringing on five metres, without clarity, it can make things

:36:30. > :36:34.uncertain as a player. Vincent playing a dangerous game here, still

:36:35. > :36:38.five seconds on the clock, it should come to nothing. The whistle may say

:36:39. > :36:40.Great Britain here, there is the shooter to sound the end of the

:36:41. > :36:46.third period. A good period of play for Belgium,

:36:47. > :36:50.just 15 minutes left after this break, the scoreline is Belgium 3-1

:36:51. > :36:56.Great Britain. After the promise of the first half,

:36:57. > :37:00.Great Britain find their back is against the wall. Belgium have shown

:37:01. > :37:05.they have an extra game, that's the difference between the two site?

:37:06. > :37:08.Yes, I was surprised with how they played the third quarter with such

:37:09. > :37:12.high intensity but they took their chances well. I think that the key

:37:13. > :37:18.is the number of caps the squad have played together, closing in on 3000

:37:19. > :37:22.between them, they know where they need to be and have made it count.

:37:23. > :37:26.With goals and not just position, my Great Britain have had, they scored

:37:27. > :37:30.two goals in the third period, and at both moments, they've looked

:37:31. > :37:34.confident knowing what the other is doing in the final area of the

:37:35. > :37:38.pitch? Yes, it is about getting players in the right position. I

:37:39. > :37:43.think George Pinner made a fantastic save on that goalkeeper, as a large

:37:44. > :37:47.goalkeeper, he went from the opposed to far post quickly, but on the

:37:48. > :37:52.floor you are reliant on the defender, and that was not the case.

:37:53. > :37:56.Two quick goals from Belgium have left Great Britain with a lot of

:37:57. > :37:59.work to do in the final quarter. How do they change what they are doing?

:38:00. > :38:04.They look comfortable in possession but when they try to attack and be

:38:05. > :38:08.incisive, that is where they fall short? Yes, they have two very mind

:38:09. > :38:12.if they push to get a second goal, it could potentially leave them

:38:13. > :38:16.exposed and Belgium could hit them on the counterattack -- they have to

:38:17. > :38:19.bear in mind. We have not seen much from the British forwards, all we

:38:20. > :38:24.have seen is defensive play rather than getting the ball into the

:38:25. > :38:28.circle, that is where it is easy to say, but they need to work on the

:38:29. > :38:32.final quarter. Who are you looking to to lead them into the area and

:38:33. > :38:36.say, right, I will take the bull by the horns and show what needs to be

:38:37. > :38:40.done. A lot of pressure is always on and Jackson, they are the names

:38:41. > :38:45.everybody knows, but for me, Catlin can unlock anyone, he scored already

:38:46. > :38:50.today, and he's brilliant on the ball, quick and dynamic. Can you see

:38:51. > :38:56.a way out of it? Why not, it was 3-1 in the champions Trophy, and it was

:38:57. > :39:01.a 3-3 draw. Why not? Yes, let's go back to Matt and Simon. A quick

:39:02. > :39:07.start, Great Britain caught napping. Not back on the pitch quickly

:39:08. > :39:11.enough, time control, when the clock ticks, they were caught on the

:39:12. > :39:16.bench, we've seen it at a world level a few times. At the Olympics,

:39:17. > :39:21.you should be sharper than that as a team unit. Great Britain went to do

:39:22. > :39:26.that again. They will learn from that -- Great Britain won't do that

:39:27. > :39:29.again. They will learn from that potentially horrible mistake, as

:39:30. > :39:35.Simon Mason said, it is all about timing. The boys were running from

:39:36. > :39:39.their bench to defend. The final period of play, 14 minutes left on

:39:40. > :39:47.the clock, and Great Britain need a couple of goals. Salvaging a point

:39:48. > :39:53.from this four way encounter. Belgium are looking supremely

:39:54. > :39:59.confident at the moment. The longer the score stays like this, the more

:40:00. > :40:04.Great Britain's coach will be thinking about pulling the

:40:05. > :40:07.goalkeeper off, if it stays a 2-goal deficit, in my expense, they would

:40:08. > :40:14.look at it at about 6-7 minutes giving them enough time to create

:40:15. > :40:27.that play. Throwing a bit of caution to the wind. -- in my experience.

:40:28. > :40:33.Belgium, with the lions share of possession the first couple of

:40:34. > :40:38.minutes of this final period. Back with the ball on the left-hand side,

:40:39. > :40:47.an interception from Middleton slowing things down, can he act as

:40:48. > :40:51.the playmaker? Off a Belgium stick. An unnecessary attempt at

:40:52. > :40:59.elimination, down the left-hand side. Belgium can attack to play the

:41:00. > :41:03.ball in small patterns, keeping the 15 seconds at a time. Running the

:41:04. > :41:07.clock. Ashley Jackson, lacking in control again, and Belgium are

:41:08. > :41:12.bursting through with the chance to further their scoreline. Jackson

:41:13. > :41:17.back with a decisive touch but danger continues. It is a penalty

:41:18. > :41:22.corner for Belgium. The pressure from the Belgium 11 is unrelenting.

:41:23. > :41:27.Unrelenting because Jackson was caught out of shape, run past in

:41:28. > :41:34.midfield when he turned the over but no defensive support, frustration

:41:35. > :41:50.showing as he blasts the ball away, Britain need more composure now.

:41:51. > :41:57.-- turned the ball over. Seven men are lined up who could

:41:58. > :42:06.play a part in this move... The penalty corner and it is high,

:42:07. > :42:10.saved. Solid from George Pinner. A big left-hand across the body.

:42:11. > :42:21.Deflecting the away, off the baseline, giving away a long corner

:42:22. > :42:29.but no second shot option. George Pinner again. Great Britain, trapped

:42:30. > :42:36.in their own circle and out towards the corner flag now, down the line

:42:37. > :42:43.and out of play. George Pinner with a big left foot, you have to

:42:44. > :42:47.question how Great Britain at the ball into that part of the circle.

:42:48. > :42:51.Ideally you want it in the middle. As soon as he is pulled off the

:42:52. > :43:01.line, Belgium have real inroads into the British circle. Iain Lewers,

:43:02. > :43:04.tidying things up for Great Britain. Catlin is the sandwich, the meat in

:43:05. > :43:17.the Belgium sandwich, as he bounces back up.

:43:18. > :43:27.Belgium strutting around the pitch. With confidence that a 3-1 lead

:43:28. > :43:31.gives them. They should never be allowed to run the ball that far up

:43:32. > :43:35.the pitch and consisted, Jackson or Sloan should get into his face. As

:43:36. > :43:41.soon as he goes for that line-up, they should have some underlying the

:43:42. > :43:47.past at the heart of the pitch. -- someone denying the past. Emmanuel

:43:48. > :43:52.Stockbroekx to the edge of the circle, held up and it is a Great

:43:53. > :43:57.Britain free hit. We see the penalty corner on the replay, it is the drag

:43:58. > :44:01.flick that George Pinner gets. No disguise, a left-hand across. A left

:44:02. > :44:11.foot kick from George Pinner again, clearing his lines. It seems

:44:12. > :44:20.everything Great Britain try at the moment is being matched and bettered

:44:21. > :44:29.by Belgium. Here they come again... Barry Middleton. Playing a captain

:44:30. > :44:36.'s role. Trying to engineer some damage limitation here.

:44:37. > :44:40.Boccard up the left-hand side, beautifully, suggesting that

:44:41. > :44:43.Gleghorne covered him, but that interchange across the middle of the

:44:44. > :44:47.field at the moment is really punishing written physically. --

:44:48. > :45:02.punishing Great Britain physically. Catlin, the goal-scorer for Great

:45:03. > :45:12.Britain, stalking look like part, forcing Belgium back into their own

:45:13. > :45:16.half, -- Loick Luypaert. The umpire calls that right back, absolutely

:45:17. > :45:21.so. John-John Dohmen took that hit, it was six or seven metres in front

:45:22. > :45:27.of where it should have been, eliminating the defensive front line

:45:28. > :45:30.of Team GB. The Belgian number 22, scoring their third goal, Simon

:45:31. > :45:34.Gougnard. Making his way to the edge of the circle, and he is

:45:35. > :45:38.dispossessed. The Belgian in no rush to continue this march forward here.

:45:39. > :45:50.Taking their time. Sloan is at that front of the line

:45:51. > :45:55.and he is looking tired and tired in the last 60 seconds. You feel there

:45:56. > :46:01.has to be a rotation. He got taken apart down the right-hand side bar

:46:02. > :46:05.Emmanuel Stockbroekx. David Ames complaining that he was bullied off

:46:06. > :46:10.the ball but it is a Belgium free hit into the circle. George Pinner

:46:11. > :46:20.gloves it away. It is not clear of danger yet. He may need to do more.

:46:21. > :46:27.Great skill by Harry Martin. He takes out ball and moves it right to

:46:28. > :46:30.left over 50 centimetres. George Pinner puts out left and right and

:46:31. > :46:45.together and high and pushes the ball away.

:46:46. > :46:57.Michael Hoare takes it up towards the half line -- halfway line. Safe

:46:58. > :47:01.in the Belgian hands again now. It goes down the left and turns and

:47:02. > :47:04.slows things down or at least it looks as though they are slowing

:47:05. > :47:20.things down, but it is another press from the Belgian side.

:47:21. > :47:28.You feel that the next couple of minutes will give us an insult into

:47:29. > :47:34.how the English coach regards this game. Will he look at this as a

:47:35. > :47:37.protection situation because the goalkeeper can concede while going

:47:38. > :47:46.for the last goal in an equalising situation? A rare excursion towards

:47:47. > :47:50.the Belgian circle, the Belgian circle for the British team, but it

:47:51. > :48:02.came to very little. A Belgian player down near the halfway line.

:48:03. > :48:08.John-John Dohmen down by the looks of it. He got a whack. Possibly a

:48:09. > :48:12.hand as he went through the tackle. No head injury or physio coming on.

:48:13. > :48:18.If a physio came on and treated him he would have to go. John-John

:48:19. > :48:26.Dohmen is a powerhouse, winning his 328th cap for Belgium this

:48:27. > :48:32.afternoon. Great Britain have the free hit. It is a 5050 ball out of

:48:33. > :48:52.play, and Belgium will restart. Six minutes and ten seconds to play.

:48:53. > :48:55.3-1 to Belgium. White shirts in the centre of the field. Good midfield

:48:56. > :49:02.action here with Barry Middleton leading the way. He drives his way

:49:03. > :49:06.through and then stops to appeal. Yes, the second phase, he was trying

:49:07. > :49:10.to find Jackson threw his arm and depicted tanned then he had to foot

:49:11. > :49:20.and he put the ball through and said there was no real advantage to us. A

:49:21. > :49:28.good tackle. Still a Great Britain ball. Pushed toward the circle. Now

:49:29. > :49:33.taken away from the danger zone by Belgium. If you look at map pushed

:49:34. > :49:40.to the circle it is driven in off a static position. You need to change

:49:41. > :49:44.the point of attack from that and pushed the ball out to one side. The

:49:45. > :49:45.Belgians have done it so well, finding those channels once they

:49:46. > :50:01.move it back. Oh, Belgium are threatening again.

:50:02. > :50:11.George Pinner was out and is an open goal and he cannot miss Andy Devon

:50:12. > :50:17.Smith. 4- to Belgium. -- he cannot miss and he doesn't miss. 18 goal,

:50:18. > :50:20.they saw each other and Great Britain had five men around the ball

:50:21. > :50:24.but they were completely turned around in possession. Into the

:50:25. > :50:31.circle. George Pinner was not sure he had to go because it is last man

:50:32. > :50:36.but in the end it was the ball played in by Cedric Charlier who

:50:37. > :50:41.found the net. It was exposed and it was poor team defence from Great

:50:42. > :50:47.Britain, getting caught or more focused. Cedric Charlier gets the

:50:48. > :50:52.open goal for Belgium. With less than five minutes to play it is all

:50:53. > :50:56.over for Great Britain, this first pool match. Can they salvage any

:50:57. > :51:04.plied with a late goal? Barry Middleton had ago but he missed. It

:51:05. > :51:15.was a good save. A great save, Vincent Vanasch got across his gold

:51:16. > :51:21.mouth well. -- goalmouth. Still Great Britain in possession, looking

:51:22. > :51:24.for a consolation score. Gauthier Boccard were shown a green card as

:51:25. > :51:34.well in the build-up to that. You deliberately knocked the ball away.

:51:35. > :51:40.Great Britain finally get a corner as Mark Gleghorne finds a foot. The

:51:41. > :51:52.first British penalty corner of the game. Just over four minutes to

:51:53. > :51:57.play. Now, typically in these situations the injection will come

:51:58. > :52:01.from Iain Lewers. He steps up to drill this one to the edge of the

:52:02. > :52:11.circle, where Ashley Jackson is waiting to strike. Great Britain's

:52:12. > :52:14.first penalty corner. Iain Lewers with the injection, here we go.

:52:15. > :52:23.Jackson with the flick. It's over the top. Jackson had one hand on his

:52:24. > :52:31.head he was the number one runner and he ran it down to got a full

:52:32. > :52:37.front of the stick on it. Nicholas Catlin is beaten for pace down the

:52:38. > :52:45.left-hand side. Belgium look to add and make this something of a

:52:46. > :52:48.thrashing. Simon Gougnard damn that left hand side was absolutely

:52:49. > :52:52.outstanding are many tried to come in on the field and find Cedric

:52:53. > :52:56.Charlier. Simon Gougnard was one of the players who was the start of a

:52:57. > :53:01.Belgium hockey revolution around seven years ago and he's played in

:53:02. > :53:15.every team since the team went from 11th in the world rankings to fifth.

:53:16. > :53:23.Belgium want more. Dan Fox back defending. Jackson. Down the

:53:24. > :53:27.right-hand side. Jackson again. On the left-hand side, Adam Dixon.

:53:28. > :53:34.Offered British steak and out of play. Oh, what Condon would give for

:53:35. > :53:38.one of those chances through the course of this game. We see the

:53:39. > :53:50.replay of the corner, out to Jackson. He takes a touch behind him

:53:51. > :53:54.to go over the top of the crossbar. The Belgian team are still hungry

:53:55. > :53:59.for more goals and the way things have worked out in this second half

:54:00. > :54:06.it wouldn't be a great surprise if they got another one before the end

:54:07. > :54:11.of play. The goal difference is going to be an issue somewhere in

:54:12. > :54:14.this pool. With the Brazilians, you think they will get beaten by

:54:15. > :54:17.everybody but how much? Then you have Belgium and Spain and New

:54:18. > :54:21.Zealand and Australia are going to be somewhere near the top. Great

:54:22. > :54:24.Britain could then be fighting for points with those for other sides to

:54:25. > :54:29.see who makes the quarters. Goals are going to count. For the six

:54:30. > :54:32.teams of the group will go through. This is not a tournament ending was

:54:33. > :54:40.by any stretch of the imagination for Great Britain. A little bit of

:54:41. > :54:46.showboating in the corner from Florent van Aubel. That was

:54:47. > :54:49.penalised by the umpire. It didn't really do anything wrong technically

:54:50. > :54:56.but by popping the ball up the referee will anticipate it will and

:54:57. > :55:02.-- cause danger as the players swinging. Damage limitation is

:55:03. > :55:07.required by Great Britain here. A goal would be good but just to

:55:08. > :55:16.maintain this scoreline and see out the last few seconds. Into the

:55:17. > :55:26.circle. Belgian move clear with the ball. That's a great cover from

:55:27. > :55:31.Middleton as he chased that back. At the foot of Sam Ward who moments ago

:55:32. > :55:34.was critical and he showed a lack of creativity. A static body position

:55:35. > :55:40.and he hasn't got space before delivering the ball across the deep.

:55:41. > :55:47.A last chance here for Belgium. In is off his line and against the

:55:48. > :55:53.fingertips of his glove on the ball. -- George Pinner is off his line. It

:55:54. > :55:57.really was the fingertips. The spectators for Great Britain were

:55:58. > :56:02.holding their breath and they were worried it would be over the top

:56:03. > :56:09.under the crossbar. Last chance for Great Britain. Just 20 seconds to

:56:10. > :56:14.play. Final scoreline will read Belgium four, Great Britain, what a

:56:15. > :56:17.disappointing start. That is the end of his stick, not even the

:56:18. > :56:24.fingertips. So close to that being a genius touch from Thomas Briels.

:56:25. > :56:27.Belgium fans join the countdown and they are on their feet in

:56:28. > :56:33.celebration. The hooter sounds. What a disappointing start to the

:56:34. > :56:43.tournament for Great Britain. Goals from Jerome Truyens Simon Gougnard,

:56:44. > :56:51.Cedric Charlier and there was one reply from Nicholas Catlin. The

:56:52. > :56:55.final score is 4-1 to Great Britain. A disappointing start for the men's

:56:56. > :57:00.team here at Deodoro. At half-time things looked promising at 1-1. What

:57:01. > :57:04.happened to them in the two periods afterwards? We just have to give

:57:05. > :57:07.credit to Belgium to be honest. I do not think Great Britain play

:57:08. > :57:11.particularly well today but I think Belgium came out of the blocks and

:57:12. > :57:15.they knew how important the game was and they made their chances count.

:57:16. > :57:21.Where lessons learned? Was there anything Belgium did that we can't

:57:22. > :57:25.do? The disappointing thing was just the final third play. It was almost

:57:26. > :57:28.as though Belgium were happy for the midfielders to have the board and as

:57:29. > :57:33.soon as it went down to the striker line they closed it down. Belgium

:57:34. > :57:37.seem to have an extra gear that we spoke about earlier in the match.

:57:38. > :57:41.When they won a press they look far more decisive. How can we replicate

:57:42. > :57:46.that? What tools do we have to do that? We just need to play the way

:57:47. > :57:49.that we can play. You can always learn things from the opposition

:57:50. > :57:52.that you play against. The difference now is that you play so

:57:53. > :57:56.much international oche that these sites will know each other so well

:57:57. > :57:59.that as an English perspective, playing against Belgium as well,

:58:00. > :58:03.Belgium just did their homework so much better and the basic skill

:58:04. > :58:09.level, the ability to pass on track the ball made all the difference. A

:58:10. > :58:12.disappointing start for the Great Britain men's team but they still

:58:13. > :58:16.have a great chance to make it to the quarterfinals.

:58:17. > :58:21.Thank you. There is still plenty to play for and I think we might have

:58:22. > :58:25.given them the kiss of death by talking up their chances. They came

:58:26. > :58:31.forth for 2012 and they really want to come away with a medal here. This

:58:32. > :58:35.is pool A as we speak now with Great Britain at the bottom and the goal

:58:36. > :58:40.difference could prove crucial. They still have four games to go to get

:58:41. > :58:45.themselves into the top four and qualify for the quarterfinals. Tests

:58:46. > :58:50.don't get much tougher when it comes to Great Britain's women who are

:58:51. > :58:55.kicking up this evening at 12:30am and they are taking on the number

:58:56. > :58:58.three seed and the three-time Olympic champions, Australia. If you

:58:59. > :59:04.want a late Saturday night, stay up for that one. Now then, just behind

:59:05. > :59:07.me right here you can see a lot of people in orderly queues are

:59:08. > :59:12.enjoying themselves by the Olympic rings. If you move over here you can

:59:13. > :59:15.see quite a lot of people have been making their way into the Olympic

:59:16. > :59:19.Tennis Centre and there are three show courts here, the yellow and red

:59:20. > :59:24.when I showed you at the top of the programme but on Court number three,

:59:25. > :59:29.Great Britain's Heather Watson has finally taken to court, the mixed

:59:30. > :59:36.doubles champion from Wimbledon opening up her women's single

:59:37. > :59:40.competition against China's Shuai Peng. We will keep you up-to-date

:59:41. > :59:44.with our progress in that opening fixture here on BBC Four. We will

:59:45. > :59:49.keep you up-to-date with any developments and we will be on the

:59:50. > :59:53.BBC website and online as well. Let us go back over to the Olympic

:59:54. > :59:57.rings. You can see that everyone is taking their turn to get a picture

:59:58. > :00:00.with the five Olympic rings, the iconic Olympic rings and it would

:00:01. > :00:04.really be difficult to come all of the way to the Olympic Park here and

:00:05. > :00:08.not be inspired. That is what we're asking you to do. We want you to

:00:09. > :00:15.watch and enjoy it and sit back and get inspired.

:00:16. > :00:20.Get inspired is on BBC sport website, and you can find

:00:21. > :00:24.inspirational stories from people just like you, as well as hints,

:00:25. > :00:30.tips and over 70 practical guides to help you give something to go. There

:00:31. > :00:34.is also an activity finder to help you find something to try near you.

:00:35. > :00:37.You can tell us how you are getting on and ask questions through social

:00:38. > :00:42.media accounts and maybe you can inspire someone else to give

:00:43. > :00:50.something a try. Now, we are passing the bass and over to you. Get up,

:00:51. > :01:00.get inspired and get active. -- passing the bat on. Still plenty to

:01:01. > :01:08.cram in. Next up, Great Britain's Max Litchfield qualification in the

:01:09. > :01:14.men's 400 medley. He is against the fastest man in the world this year.

:01:15. > :01:19.Very soon, it is qualification time for Max, Lewis, Nile, Brin and

:01:20. > :01:23.Christian, a:k.a. The men's great British gymnastics squad. No time

:01:24. > :01:29.for slip-ups as they get their Olympic qualification under way.

:01:30. > :01:35.Then we are back to the pool. Adam Peaty is ripped and ready for Rio.

:01:36. > :01:41.Use the 100 meter world record-holder and is going in the

:01:42. > :01:44.heats as well. We are going to focus on the swimming for the next few

:01:45. > :01:50.minutes or so. Behind these rings you can just make them out. Sorry,

:01:51. > :01:54.it is very busy here just bumping into everybody and making friends.

:01:55. > :02:00.Beyond my friend and the rings you can see the Olympic Aquatic Centre.

:02:01. > :02:05.No less than 34 medals to be decided. Taking to the water for

:02:06. > :02:10.Great Britain is Max Litchfield. The 21-year-old from Sheffield admitted

:02:11. > :02:14.he felt a bit weird when he qualified for his first ever Olympic

:02:15. > :02:21.Games back in March, but he is here, he is ready, he is in Rio and he

:02:22. > :02:28.talked to our reporter David McDaid. Max Litchfield is inside the real

:02:29. > :02:35.time and Max Litchfield can dust down his passport. He is going to

:02:36. > :02:41.Rio. Brilliant swim. You said it felt weird to qualify. It did feel

:02:42. > :02:45.very weird. It was one of my targets for this season and I knew it would

:02:46. > :02:48.be something that would be tough to do, but it was a matter of getting

:02:49. > :02:53.to the pool every day and putting in the processes I needed to do and put

:02:54. > :02:57.in everything I needed to do to get on the team. You trained in

:02:58. > :03:02.Sheffield but you are from Pontefract. What messages of support

:03:03. > :03:07.have you had from home? Everyone has been in contact a lot recently.

:03:08. > :03:12.People from school getting back in touch and things like that. It's

:03:13. > :03:17.been great. All the guys back at home have been great, all the little

:03:18. > :03:23.guys gave us a little sendoff when we left. It is great to have those

:03:24. > :03:29.guys behind us. Do you have friends and family coming out? Yes, my mum,

:03:30. > :03:32.dad, sister are going out. They are staying in an apartment block down

:03:33. > :03:37.the road. It is nice to have them there and my coaches coming out, as

:03:38. > :03:43.well. What a swim from the Sheffield swimmer, Max Litchfield, take a bow.

:03:44. > :03:46.What do you hope to achieve in Rio? It is about sitting there and

:03:47. > :03:53.raising hard and enjoying it. Whatever I get from it is a bonus. I

:03:54. > :03:57.am happy to be year and amazed to representing Team GB and Great

:03:58. > :04:04.Britain. Just to go there and race and whatever comes out of it, I will

:04:05. > :04:08.be happy. There are going to be butterflies, quite literally, when

:04:09. > :04:11.Max takes to the water in the 400 metres individual medley. It will

:04:12. > :04:18.take place in that venue right there. It is over to the Olympic

:04:19. > :04:22.Aquatic Centre. Max involved in heat number three. The top to qualify

:04:23. > :04:26.automatically or the semifinals. Now we can hand over to Adrian Moorhouse

:04:27. > :04:32.and Andy Jameson, describing the action.

:04:33. > :04:55.The big guys now, heat three of four.

:04:56. > :05:23.An unusual stroke in the black hat in the centre.

:05:24. > :06:05.The Australian has taken half a metre of Fraser-Holmes.

:06:06. > :06:12.Just at the moment, the Australian in three at the top, just doing the

:06:13. > :06:19.backstroke, not particularly straight. Second is just the

:06:20. > :06:23.Australian, Fraser-Holmes. Litchfield is fifth at the moment.

:06:24. > :06:30.He will have to do some work here. Back to breast.

:06:31. > :06:41.He is right of your shots, of those four swimmers making the move for

:06:42. > :06:42.second place. It is a great backstroke, he just caught the lane

:06:43. > :07:13.line. You can just about see the red hats,

:07:14. > :07:17.Max Litchfield of Sheffield. He is having a good breaststroke. He has a

:07:18. > :07:24.good freestyle, as well. He is the eighth seed coming into this event.

:07:25. > :07:27.He could make the final tonight, that would be brilliant for his

:07:28. > :07:39.first Olympics. It would be great to see Litchfield

:07:40. > :07:48.get the second place. It would guarantee him a final spot. It is

:07:49. > :07:54.all though. -- it is all on times, though. He talks about this being

:07:55. > :08:06.like a game of chess. He has made a strong move on the breaststroke.

:08:07. > :08:16.Hagino has taken another metre or two off on the breaststroke leg. If

:08:17. > :08:20.Max Litchfield can come back, and he has to do probably 58 or so to give

:08:21. > :08:24.himself a decent chance at the final... Hagino is slowing up, this

:08:25. > :08:31.is interesting. 50 metres to go. Fraser-Holmes in third, he has some

:08:32. > :08:41.work to do to make the final. Hagino knows he has qualified easily

:08:42. > :09:01.in this. I would love to see Max go maybe

:09:02. > :09:06.just under four. 12. -- 4.12. That is very good. A new lifetime best, I

:09:07. > :09:11.think, by one tenth or so for Max Litchfield. What a fantastic time to

:09:12. > :09:19.do it in the heats of the Olympic Games. He has a super chance of

:09:20. > :09:25.making the final. Hagino we are seeing here. He did a really

:09:26. > :09:31.dominant swim. Breaststroke just enough to hold the lead, very

:09:32. > :09:36.strong, compact swimmer. No leg kick at all towards the end, glides in,

:09:37. > :09:44.done enough. All eyes on his team-mate in the next one.

:09:45. > :09:53.Great swim from Max Litchfield, coming second. A new lifetime best.

:09:54. > :10:11.It's all about producing the goods in the heat here. The quality is so

:10:12. > :10:14.high. Top four, you hope you are OK. Some fantastic personal bests.

:10:15. > :10:21.Another one there, more to come later? Hopefully, yes. The last

:10:22. > :10:29.hundred felt awful, but it always does. Great start, well done.

:10:30. > :10:40.Confirmation of the finalists. That is interesting. The German in the

:10:41. > :10:49.last heat was disqualified. Max Litchfield goes in fifth fastest.

:10:50. > :10:54.That men's individual medley will be taking place at two-way am your

:10:55. > :10:59.time. If you fancy a late Saturday night, that is your entertainment.

:11:00. > :11:03.We are staying in the Olympic Aquatic Centre Right now for the

:11:04. > :11:12.women's 100 metres fly. Representing a team of refugee Olympic athletes.

:11:13. > :11:24.Her story just to get here has been eventful. It really has been. Quite

:11:25. > :11:28.the story. Swimming for me is a passion, my life. It is from deep

:11:29. > :11:33.down in your heart. It is the most important thing in my life. When you

:11:34. > :11:41.are in the water, you don't think about anything. It is a completely

:11:42. > :11:46.different world. It was a normal life in Syria. I have school,

:11:47. > :11:55.training, gymnastics, and a lot of friends. What happened was, four

:11:56. > :12:03.years of war. Everyone couldn't take it any more. The streets are

:12:04. > :12:07.dangerous. There was bombing. We decided, me and my sister, to

:12:08. > :12:12.travel. Of course we were scared, but we had to try. Maybe I will die

:12:13. > :12:21.on the way, but I am almost dead in my country. We were four days in

:12:22. > :12:26.jungles, no water, no food. Someone said, I will get you in the boat.

:12:27. > :12:37.After that, 20 people in one boat. After 15 or 30 minutes, we stopped.

:12:38. > :12:43.I was thinking about me and my sister and thinking it would be a

:12:44. > :12:49.shame if we died. My life is passing before my eyes. When we arrived in

:12:50. > :12:53.Greece, I arrived with a T-shirt, jeans, and not even any shoes.

:12:54. > :13:00.People who were in Germany told us what to do. You have to go this way,

:13:01. > :13:04.do that. Of course we were scared. You put -- they put you on a

:13:05. > :13:12.register, camping. I knew my trip was over.

:13:13. > :13:19.In the camp, there was a really nice man who was a translator. I told him

:13:20. > :13:24.that I am a swimmer and he was like, really? You will be a good swimmer?

:13:25. > :13:30.I swear, just find me a club. In the club, they make you feel like it is

:13:31. > :13:35.your second family. It will never be like my home country, but it is

:13:36. > :13:40.amazing. I get an e-mail that I am going to the Olympics, in the team

:13:41. > :13:43.of refugees, and it is like a dream come true because Olympics is

:13:44. > :13:47.everything. I will be really proud to be on this team because all of

:13:48. > :14:02.them are really special people. One of ten refugee athletes out here

:14:03. > :14:06.in Rio. As you'd imagine, plenty of anticipation towards the

:14:07. > :14:09.18-year-old's involvement. She is in lane for each number one and this

:14:10. > :14:12.really is her chance to make waves in the Olympic history books. Let's

:14:13. > :14:13.handover to Adrian and Andy to describe this

:14:14. > :14:27.Some history here. The first heat of the women's 100 metres butterfly. In

:14:28. > :14:34.lane for this Yusra Mardini, and what an amazing story she has had.

:14:35. > :14:46.She is representing the Refugee Olympic Team here. We will talk

:14:47. > :14:50.about her in a second. Don't expect her to make it through to the

:14:51. > :14:59.semifinals. But what an amazing journey she has had. Mardini of the

:15:00. > :15:06.Refugee Olympic Team in lane four, escape from Syria. She was trying to

:15:07. > :15:10.train in Damascus, and sometimes the pool was closed because it was

:15:11. > :15:14.bombed. Can you imagine? You talk about training problems, but war and

:15:15. > :15:20.bombing, goodness me. She went out, took the boat over from Turkey to

:15:21. > :15:26.try to get to Greece and the engine broke very quickly and she hopped

:15:27. > :15:31.out with a couple of others. For three hours, tried to get her boat

:15:32. > :15:36.to land, and she made it. It puts it all in perspective.

:15:37. > :15:44.When she got to Berlin, the first thing she did was look for the local

:15:45. > :15:48.swimming pool. Swimming is a great community, turning up to a group of

:15:49. > :16:02.people who welcomed her, she got back into a routine that became her

:16:03. > :16:17.normal. A good first 100 metres. Her first total 100 metres. Winning the

:16:18. > :16:24.race. Yusra Mardini. Quite an extraordinary swim. I have to say, I

:16:25. > :16:31.totally take off my hat to her. What she has achieved. Just 18 years old.

:16:32. > :16:36.If she wants to, she can go and off a lot quicker, with a lot more

:16:37. > :16:41.training but she is training pretty -- pretty hard. Lots of technical

:16:42. > :16:52.thing she can do, but just to get here, what an achievement.

:16:53. > :16:58.Outstanding. Yusra Mardini. She wins that first heat of the women's 100

:16:59. > :17:06.metres butterfly. The Refugee Olympic Team, I think it is utterly

:17:07. > :17:12.extraordinary. Absolutely brilliant. Well done, how does it feel to be

:17:13. > :17:18.here? It was really amazing. I was really happy. It was hard but I was

:17:19. > :17:23.happy. Do you wonder what you might be able to do if you have access to

:17:24. > :17:31.a swimming pool more in the future? We are going to work more. I think

:17:32. > :17:38.we have to work because when I go out with the level more, I want to

:17:39. > :17:43.get a medal. How has all the attention being? Everyone wants to

:17:44. > :17:47.talk to you. It was really amazing. Everyone cheering for us and

:17:48. > :17:57.supporting us, we are glad for that. Well done. Thank you. The final heat

:17:58. > :18:10.and the world record-holder goes in lane number four. Here she is, we

:18:11. > :18:21.have already given her the gold medal tomorrow night. She is very

:18:22. > :18:25.fast, Jeannette Otteson. That was the silver medallist from London

:18:26. > :18:38.Mayor in the white hat, three from the bottom. The final heat of the

:18:39. > :18:43.100m butterfly. The world record-holder in Lane for four

:18:44. > :18:50.Sweden. She has dominated since London. Right now she is looking a

:18:51. > :19:01.little bit rusty in the yellow cap. Good start from Jeannette Otteson.

:19:02. > :19:12.The only 50 metre churn. That was good from Ying Lu of China. Sarah

:19:13. > :19:21.Sjostrom skipping along the surface of the water. She is so powerful,

:19:22. > :19:31.did not have a great start, but her last 25 has been good. I am guessing

:19:32. > :19:37.mid 56. 56.2. Look at that, the Canadian, second-fastest. The world

:19:38. > :19:44.junior record holder on their freestyle. She has just gone 56.7

:19:45. > :19:56.and I think that might be a world junior record. She was the first

:19:57. > :20:03.Canadian under 57 at the trials. She was coached by Ben Titley in Canada.

:20:04. > :20:08.Sarah Sjostrom look to get off to a slow start at she came back quickly

:20:09. > :20:17.and will qualify fastest into the semi-finals and has done just quite

:20:18. > :20:20.enough. I have to say, that was not quite what I expected from Sarah

:20:21. > :20:27.Sjostrom, I expect good technical excellence and the start, she was

:20:28. > :20:34.probably third or fourth test, she certainly got beaten on the turn.

:20:35. > :20:50.Sarah Sjostrom wins the final heat. 56.2. She is fastest mollified for

:20:51. > :20:54.the semi-finals. The Canadian is second, Penny Oleksiak and Jeannette

:20:55. > :20:58.Otteson is second. Britain has got plenty to be excited about because

:20:59. > :21:03.never before has Team GB in able to boast to world champion swimmers in

:21:04. > :21:07.the opening session. That is happening today, James Guy is up

:21:08. > :21:22.first going in the men's 100m freestyle. Now we will turn our

:21:23. > :21:25.attention to heat six. One of the races we have been looking forward

:21:26. > :21:39.to, the Chinese competitor in Lane four. Park looks in fantastic shape

:21:40. > :21:58.as does this gentleman, the world record-holder, Yang Sun.

:21:59. > :22:07.Take your Mark! A little bit of noise on the start and not the

:22:08. > :22:15.greatest art from Yang Sun. That is quite interesting. Very quick start

:22:16. > :22:23.indeed for Park in Lane three and you can see Yang Sun in the centre.

:22:24. > :22:30.This is a tough race to commentate on, knowing that the two

:22:31. > :22:35.protagonists in the centre will -- have been part of the dubbing issues

:22:36. > :22:47.surrounding our sport. In Lane number eight, the Austrian, Felix

:22:48. > :22:53.Auboeck. He is going very fast at the moment. What is he doing? He is

:22:54. > :22:59.having a go and doing a crowd pleaser. He will now look over and

:23:00. > :23:05.see he has an edge on the rest of the field. You can see a slight

:23:06. > :23:14.lead. Ryan Cochrane has spotted that. The Canadian. 27 years old. We

:23:15. > :23:24.enjoyed commentating on him over the years, he is a great competitor. As

:23:25. > :23:29.Andy mentioned, three and four, Park Taehwan and Yang Sun, two previous

:23:30. > :23:41.winners of this race in Beijing and London. Both are back from drug

:23:42. > :23:46.suspensions. The white hat of Ryan Cochrane is making a move three from

:23:47. > :23:51.the right-hand side. Ryan Cochrane is to be a brilliant 1500 metres

:23:52. > :23:59.freestyle. He has just made a move, that is interesting. Yang Sun

:24:00. > :24:10.starting to make his move, the Olympic champion. Looking pretty

:24:11. > :24:24.good indeed. One lane close to us is the American, Connor Jaeger. He is a

:24:25. > :24:34.really strong finisher. Taking a slight lead over Yang Sun. Connor

:24:35. > :24:50.Jaeger is renowned for his finish. Yang has a lazy stroke. Yang does

:24:51. > :24:58.look good, ominous. 100 metres to go in this second last heat and the cat

:24:59. > :25:03.and mouse continues, Yang in the centre, the white cap of China

:25:04. > :25:10.starting to wind it up. He did not look great at the 250 turn. He is

:25:11. > :25:16.really starting to spread the field and this is fascinating, the German

:25:17. > :25:26.right at the top going with them as well. There will be Yang first,

:25:27. > :25:34.second is the German, Florian Vogel. Connor Jaeger is third. A big sprint

:25:35. > :25:40.now. A big sprint by Florian Vogel. Park might not make the final. Very

:25:41. > :25:51.strong swimming. This last 100 metres has been frightening. Yang is

:25:52. > :26:04.back. Three point four point two, that is lower than I thought. Park

:26:05. > :26:09.was in fourth place. He may not make the final with some big guys in this

:26:10. > :26:20.last heat. Oh my goodness me. That will be good to see. If he did not

:26:21. > :26:30.make it. Park is through. Sorry, Yang is through, not Park. Strong,

:26:31. > :26:36.very strong, he dominated in the last 300 metres. He is a very

:26:37. > :26:41.powerful and impressive swimmer. He does not do medium very well. He

:26:42. > :26:47.does not do so very well either. Did not look great. He is a monster. He

:26:48. > :26:57.is six foot seven, slightly quirky, to be polite. He is splashing water

:26:58. > :27:01.at the Australian. Second last heat, Yang wins it, Connor Jaeger a

:27:02. > :27:02.second, Florian Vogel is third will stop Ryan Cochrane is in fifth

:27:03. > :27:13.place. The final heat of the 400 metres

:27:14. > :27:21.freestyle and this is wide open. Mack Horton is in Lane number four

:27:22. > :27:26.and James Guy is in Lane number five. We have seen an average heat,

:27:27. > :27:32.there is Mack Horton, the fastest in the world this year. There is James

:27:33. > :27:37.Guy, silver medallist in the great Brits -- in the World Championships

:27:38. > :27:44.last year for Great Britain. He has a great chance of making the final.

:27:45. > :27:52.Stephen Milne of Great Britain is in Lane number one. It must be an

:27:53. > :27:56.advantage to be in the final heat because that second last heat was

:27:57. > :28:00.not rate. All eight of these guys must have taken heart from that. I

:28:01. > :28:08.think that Yang the problem we spotted that the pace was off. Just

:28:09. > :28:15.did enough. Really looking forward to seeing how Mack Horton swims and

:28:16. > :28:26.James Guy is in Lane number five. James Guy, world champion last year,

:28:27. > :28:36.Great Britain, red cap looking good. Mack Horton, 20 years old, as you

:28:37. > :28:43.said, an awesome time at the strode in trials this year, fastest by a

:28:44. > :28:49.long way. -- Australian. James Guy was very good. James Guy was fifth

:28:50. > :29:00.at the 15th and first at the Hundred and he looks very good indeed. He

:29:01. > :29:05.was not really ready at all. I think he got a little bit of a wake-up

:29:06. > :29:12.call. He looks beautiful here, lovely long and strong and leading

:29:13. > :29:19.it out for Great Britain. 345 and he is in, 345 hi and he is out for is

:29:20. > :29:30.top there are a number of swimmers here, that are capable of making the

:29:31. > :29:44.final. Conor Dwyer in the second plane, very experienced. -- second

:29:45. > :29:51.Lane. He did well there. That is the halfway turn. James Guy of great

:29:52. > :29:57.written turns first at the Hundred. He is in a good place, now the big

:29:58. > :30:08.guys go and Mack Horton is starting to go to his legs. One lane up from

:30:09. > :30:16.the Red Hat of James Guy. The other Australian, Mack Horton over first.

:30:17. > :30:22.James Guy, do not let Mack Horton go. He has definitely made a move.

:30:23. > :30:31.James Guy is in the right place, exactly where he needs to be. He is

:30:32. > :30:39.our world champion at 200. This is his favourite event. Conor Dwyer

:30:40. > :30:47.taking the lead. 100 metres to go. Conor Dwyer 0.35 ahead. James Guy

:30:48. > :30:50.has some work to do to make the final. He is currently lying in

:30:51. > :30:57.about fifth position and the other guys have got hired pretty early. He

:30:58. > :31:08.has some work to do, James Guy. This is the last heat and he will have to

:31:09. > :31:16.go up 3.45 low will stop he has to come back in 28 flat. He has some

:31:17. > :31:20.work to do, a lot to do. He is still in fifth place. This is dangerous.

:31:21. > :31:31.Conor Dwyer is having the race of his life. If James Guy can get that

:31:32. > :31:35.40, he has a chance. Mack Horton coming through strongly. Are much

:31:36. > :31:50.faster heat and guy still has half a chance. 3:45.3, I think he is in,

:31:51. > :31:57.James Guy. He is in the final six and has made it by 18 one hundredths

:31:58. > :32:11.of a second. That is still to be confirmed, but, my goodness me.

:32:12. > :32:21.Tighter than I would like. Tae-hwan Park has not made it. Are much, much

:32:22. > :32:32.faster swim. Two from your right coming into second place. Mack

:32:33. > :32:35.Horton surprising. Coming into this, 1.5 seconds faster than everybody

:32:36. > :32:46.else in the field, but just trailing off there. Five of that last heat

:32:47. > :32:54.making it in. The good swimmer from Stephen Milne, a lifetime best for

:32:55. > :32:59.him. Just missed the final. He has got some good company, missing that

:33:00. > :33:02.final. Tae-hwan Park not in it, Cochrane not in it. Confirmation of

:33:03. > :33:11.the finalists. James Guy didn't look that great,

:33:12. > :33:26.hopefully he has some more to go. The men's 403 is a stack and

:33:27. > :33:35.controversial field. Becky Adlington, Matt Foster. Took us

:33:36. > :33:39.through that one. Sun is back after a drugs ban. James Guy comes in

:33:40. > :33:43.having won silver at the Championships last year, knowing he

:33:44. > :33:47.loves the race. What do you make of his swim? Bell we looks tired to me.

:33:48. > :33:50.Some of the other countries, USA, Australia, have said, no, we are

:33:51. > :33:54.here and we want to be noticed. They have been swimming great all

:33:55. > :33:59.morning. For James, I thought that was a hard race. He didn't look as

:34:00. > :34:03.smooth as he always does. Hopefully he has blown the cobwebs out of the

:34:04. > :34:08.way and will rest for the final and have something tonight. What do you

:34:09. > :34:12.do? He makes a joke about the fact he's very confident, relaxed, loves

:34:13. > :34:19.to be in the fight, not a scrap. That'll anger over him. It was slow

:34:20. > :34:25.for him. You looked a bit heavy. He was in a stacked heat. He needed to

:34:26. > :34:30.go quick. The times in the other heats were very fast, but he didn't

:34:31. > :34:35.look like. This afternoon, go back and rest. He performs at the right

:34:36. > :34:39.time, so let's not write him off. He has a lane in the final and if he

:34:40. > :34:48.can rest, he can come back and do something. Let's see what he has to

:34:49. > :34:56.say to Sharron. Very tough. Good guys in that heat and through the

:34:57. > :35:01.finals tonight. Did you think before you went in a low 45 would make it,

:35:02. > :35:06.high 45 want? I knew it would be a fast time to get through. I knew mid

:35:07. > :35:10.to high 45 would make it. Some unusual swimming. We went out very

:35:11. > :35:17.hard. It looks like your legs are hurting. I tried to hold on. I knew

:35:18. > :35:22.the guys next to me would come back fast and that was the plan. Is there

:35:23. > :35:33.a plan for this evening? I think so. Will you tell us? No. What do you

:35:34. > :35:37.make of that? I went in eighth and came out with a bronze medal. I have

:35:38. > :35:40.full confidence in that man. He has been swimming well consistently for

:35:41. > :35:48.the past year or two and I think he's up for it. His final will be at

:35:49. > :35:52.2:30am on Sunday, so if you want to see how James gets on, join us. It

:35:53. > :35:57.will be a late night, but it is today, so you can stay up late.

:35:58. > :35:58.Congratulations to Stephen Milne, a personal best, but he doesn't make

:35:59. > :36:07.the final. I love gymnastics because... I don't

:36:08. > :36:14.even know the answer to the question. It requires so much

:36:15. > :36:19.dedication, so much attention to detail, so much commitment at a

:36:20. > :36:23.young age. It is all about faster, higher, stronger. Can you be the

:36:24. > :36:28.best in the world at everything? The ultimate sport. Gymnastics is so

:36:29. > :36:31.different. You can't just jump on the floor and do a double backflip.

:36:32. > :36:37.You have to be precise in everything you do. You have to do a round off

:36:38. > :36:41.backflip and double twist and double back into that, then you get

:36:42. > :36:49.impressive. It is a great feeling when you pushed through. It is

:36:50. > :36:53.unreal feeling. Helen, I'm right here. Of course, we love gymnastics,

:36:54. > :36:59.as well. Thank you very much to Helen and the swimming guys. We will

:37:00. > :37:04.move away from the Olympic Aquatics Centre and find a three-time gymnast

:37:05. > :37:10.and Olympian and a three-time world champion in Beth Tweddle standing

:37:11. > :37:15.right here. But deceive. How are you? Really well. This is the first

:37:16. > :37:19.time you have been a spectator since Sydney. It is strange being on the

:37:20. > :37:22.other side of the fence. When I was watching the gymnasts competing and

:37:23. > :37:26.training, I thought, I know how much hard work they have done. I'm

:37:27. > :37:32.pleased to be sat on this site. We will look after you. You are the

:37:33. > :37:36.Team GB ambassador. You have seen the guys in the arena, we look

:37:37. > :37:39.forward to the men's team qualification right now. How are

:37:40. > :37:44.they feeling? It has been good preparation leading up to these

:37:45. > :37:48.games. We sell them getting used to the apparatus yesterday and getting

:37:49. > :37:55.used to the atmosphere. It went well. Vigurs cross the British guys

:37:56. > :37:58.will have a good competition. Explain for us those who haven't

:37:59. > :38:01.seen the men's qualification in action, it can get conjugated.

:38:02. > :38:04.Essentially, this is the chance to get all of the finals were team

:38:05. > :38:10.individuals and the apparatus, as well. Yes, qualification is the most

:38:11. > :38:14.important day. Five in a team, for each apparatus and three of those

:38:15. > :38:19.scores count. Top eight teams go through to team final, top 24

:38:20. > :38:25.gymnasts go through the all-around and top Yate on each apparatus, but

:38:26. > :38:28.only two from each country. -- top eight on each apparatus. You have to

:38:29. > :38:33.go clean, especially in the individual ones. We were there in

:38:34. > :38:37.China in 2014 when Max Whitlock had a few falls in the high bar and in

:38:38. > :38:42.the pommel, that meant he was out of the individual finals. He was a real

:38:43. > :38:46.medal hope. We have medal hopes all over Team GB right now, but Max

:38:47. > :38:49.Whitlock, we would expect to see him with at least one goal.

:38:50. > :38:54.Qualification is the most nerve wracking for any gymnast because

:38:55. > :38:59.your Olympic Games can be make or break in 30 seconds. Max Whitlock is

:39:00. > :39:04.our biggest hope and fingers crossed he will have a great day today. I

:39:05. > :39:09.think our medal target is around three to four medals. Similar to

:39:10. > :39:13.London. We are all set. We will see the great British man going up

:39:14. > :39:18.against all six apparatus over the afternoon. We will see them taking

:39:19. > :39:19.to the floor just now. Over to our commentary team of Craig Heap and

:39:20. > :39:30.Christine Still. We are watching the replay of the

:39:31. > :39:38.German team, lovely double twisting, straight dismount. But there was an

:39:39. > :39:48.error in the routine early on. There was indeed, Christine. It cost late

:39:49. > :39:51.for that. Marcel Nguyen has had a break from gymnastics, done a

:39:52. > :39:56.modelling career, come back to the team. A very experienced gymnast.

:39:57. > :40:03.His experience was lacking on that first piece of apparatus. He was

:40:04. > :40:08.quite disgruntled with himself. The German team high bar is one of their

:40:09. > :40:14.big apparatus. They would certainly be hoping for a good start here.

:40:15. > :40:18.They would be. This was the error. The hand just didn't grasp. Although

:40:19. > :40:28.he stayed on the apparatus, it was an obvious mistake. The sport will

:40:29. > :40:36.reflect that, no doubt. Something to think about.

:40:37. > :40:49.Onto the floor, representing Great Britain, Max Whitlock. Eight

:40:50. > :40:54.superfast for work. Very nicely landed. A routine made up of twists.

:40:55. > :41:06.Watch out here. He is a bit of an expert on the

:41:07. > :41:13.pommel horse, as well. A bit of break dancing, as well, for effect.

:41:14. > :41:21.Lots of flair in this routine. Gymnasts, of course, have to hold

:41:22. > :41:29.the handstand, show balance, as well as the ability to tumble. Every

:41:30. > :41:34.landing needs to be clean, and that was very difficult. You could see

:41:35. > :41:42.real big concentration as he went forwards into that.

:41:43. > :41:49.Lovely roll-outs. Gymnasts are allowed to include one of those

:41:50. > :41:56.somersaults to roll out. Beautiful tripled to finish. What a first

:41:57. > :42:00.routine from Max Whitlock. Fantastic stuff. Territory macro on a high

:42:01. > :42:19.bar. He will be disappointed with that score. -- Marcel Nguyen.

:42:20. > :42:27.ORE ODUBA: has nominated a new element.

:42:28. > :42:46.Two twists, but you have to do them so fast and get out so quickly to be

:42:47. > :42:50.able to read graphs and hang on. He just didn't really get his whole

:42:51. > :43:00.body square as he went to grasp. You have to get your whole hand over. 30

:43:01. > :43:08.seconds of the apparatus to remount and back into the routine. He needs

:43:09. > :43:12.a really good routine. This is important for the team. They have

:43:13. > :43:15.had one gymnasts make an error. This will be their second. Lovely work,

:43:16. > :43:39.catching on straight arms. Double twisting, double straight

:43:40. > :43:44.dismount, lovely dismount, but you lose one hole mark and probably

:43:45. > :43:47.don't get the move counted, either. Disappointing start with Germany so

:43:48. > :43:57.far on the high bar. One mistake, one fall. 15.5 on the floor for Max

:43:58. > :44:15.Whitlock. Great start. Quite a tall gymnast, he has two

:44:16. > :44:29.harness the power inside the square. All these gymnasts know everything

:44:30. > :44:45.has to be perfectly formed. Beautifully wide armed handstand.

:44:46. > :45:09.Lovely control and strength. What a routine from Kristian Thomas

:45:10. > :45:18.will stop we have seen two really fabulous routines from the British

:45:19. > :45:23.guys. What a routine therefrom Kristian You can see why he is the

:45:24. > :45:26.captain, so, and collected. All those years of experience. A lot of

:45:27. > :45:32.nerves out here in the first round, but that was spot on.

:45:33. > :45:51.Double twist, spot the flaw, Punch, secure on the landing. Precise. Just

:45:52. > :45:54.what you need. British team, quite a mix of youth and experience,

:45:55. > :46:12.Kristian Thomas has a lot of experience. Brinn Bevan and now

:46:13. > :46:21.Wilson at their first Olympics, Andreas Bretschneider's scores

:46:22. > :46:27.there. -- Nile Wilson. Next on to the high bar representing Germany,

:46:28. > :46:43.the one and only five Ian Hamlisch on.

:46:44. > :46:58.-- Fabian Hambuechen. Super straight. The idea is you have to

:46:59. > :47:04.keep the swing going. Link the elements which he has done, not too

:47:05. > :47:11.many, just giant circles, he wants to try and make each move count. You

:47:12. > :47:18.can see him change the shape of the swing. Beautiful landing. That was

:47:19. > :47:24.the routine Germany needed at that moment. It was indeed and he is

:47:25. > :47:35.certainly enjoying the crowds in this arena today.

:47:36. > :47:41.So, by the time the competition finished in the first round, we had

:47:42. > :47:49.the full arena, not quite full now. There we can see, in the straight

:47:50. > :47:56.position with a full turn, perfect position of the hands, as he

:47:57. > :48:02.travelled that words, we see it in straddle position in the straight.

:48:03. > :48:07.Twisting elements, elements around the bar and there you can see, he

:48:08. > :48:14.wraps in into a double twisted double straight back dismount. The

:48:15. > :48:20.expression on his face, he is well and truly happy with that. Hi bar

:48:21. > :48:30.scores have been quite difficult to come by this competition so far, a

:48:31. > :48:36.15 three is the highest. There is a score for Kristian Thomas. -- 15.3.

:48:37. > :48:43.A brilliant start for the British boys on the floor. Good effort from

:48:44. > :48:49.Kristian Thomas, we saw Max Whitlock and Louis Smith, he will be up on

:48:50. > :48:55.the pommel horse. We will talk about that in a few moments. Clean

:48:56. > :49:00.routines, happy days. You always want to get off to a good start and

:49:01. > :49:10.Max and Western Thomas looked good. They can continue with their

:49:11. > :49:16.petition -- Kristian Thomas. One thing we have not talked about, the

:49:17. > :49:20.Great Britain men are coming into the competition as one of the teams

:49:21. > :49:27.in the world. That has not surly happen before, they got a great

:49:28. > :49:30.bronze medal, but as far as Max is concerned, he will be disappointed

:49:31. > :49:37.if he did not come away with three medals. Prior to London 2012 we did

:49:38. > :49:40.not have a team in the Olympic Games and then we won that bronze medal

:49:41. > :49:45.and that put them on the scene. Everyone is watching them. We have

:49:46. > :49:53.lots of individual talent and Max has done amazing. We are not just

:49:54. > :49:58.talking about one gymnast, that has made the difference, it is a whole

:49:59. > :50:10.team effort. This is a team that did not need to bring Daniel Purvis,

:50:11. > :50:15.Brinn Bevan coming in, the teenager, these guys have a good setup and

:50:16. > :50:21.even if the do not come here, I'm sure they will do well, but in years

:50:22. > :50:26.to come, the men are looking in rude health. We have such depth in our

:50:27. > :50:32.team, the fact that Danielle and Sam are at home, but the rest of the

:50:33. > :50:36.team have been pushed and so many are vying for those spots it only

:50:37. > :50:42.makes our team stronger -- Daniel. They picked up the silver medal at

:50:43. > :50:46.the World Championships last year and we are forced to be reckoned

:50:47. > :50:51.with. A force internally as well because after the floor they move

:50:52. > :50:56.onto the pommel and we will see Louis Smith taking to the pommel

:50:57. > :51:01.horse and the podium for the first time competitively and between him

:51:02. > :51:05.and Max who was at Glasgow last year, great internal battle that

:51:06. > :51:09.should push both of them. It really should. It was a close battle at the

:51:10. > :51:12.World Championships, only a tenth between it and we are the best

:51:13. > :51:18.pommel horse workers in the world and hopefully we can continue that

:51:19. > :51:25.into the final. There is the Hungary and who is normally their biggest

:51:26. > :51:28.rival and he is not there. We will have to see how qualification goes

:51:29. > :51:33.before we get up our hopes. I think we are going to go back to the

:51:34. > :51:39.gymnastics because the guys are into their second rotation and we will

:51:40. > :51:46.see the boys taking to the pommel horse that will come next. Now we

:51:47. > :51:52.will check in at the Aquatic Centre because we are going to feature a

:51:53. > :51:58.Commonwealth gold medallist. Hannah Miley is gearing up for her debut at

:51:59. > :52:14.her third Olympics. She is chasing that metal. -- medal. The thing with

:52:15. > :52:19.Hannah and she said the other day, this is a bit of a routine the

:52:20. > :52:25.butterflies have gone. She really wants to make her mark, it will

:52:26. > :52:31.probably be her last Olympics. She has a good chance, she is second in

:52:32. > :52:35.the world. Always at the Olympics it depends on what other people do as

:52:36. > :52:42.well as yourself. If she does her best time, she will get that medal

:52:43. > :52:47.that we all think she deserves. She has got to come in, concentrate on

:52:48. > :52:53.herself and Amy has a good chance as well. This is Amy's second Olympics

:52:54. > :52:58.and she is looking for her first place in the Olympic final. Another

:52:59. > :53:05.young woman flying the flag. It would be great to see Amy make the

:53:06. > :53:09.final tonight. She has done well at the Commonwealth Games and issues to

:53:10. > :53:14.a world stage but this is the one she wants to do well at and

:53:15. > :53:28.hopefully she can get a medal. Take us through their heats. The first of

:53:29. > :53:40.the seeded heats. There are is the Australian, McMaster. The American

:53:41. > :53:49.goes in lane number four. There is Aimee Willmott. She is the sixth

:53:50. > :54:02.fastest in the world this year. There is a very quick second eight

:54:03. > :54:06.here though. There are some really quick swimmers in the last eight.

:54:07. > :54:16.They have to put in a good time here.

:54:17. > :54:33.The Canadian, Emily Overholt very fast. Aimee Willmott, good fly. She

:54:34. > :54:39.has really been working on all four strokes, very important that you

:54:40. > :54:47.have strength and depth. You need to really work your strength. Aimee

:54:48. > :54:56.Willmott is heard. Not a bad position to be in. It is interesting

:54:57. > :55:06.to see the gold medallist from 2012, Shiwen Ye. She is a wild card. Good

:55:07. > :55:15.wild card to play. Very different body shape from four years ago.

:55:16. > :55:22.Pretty strong looking. Aimee Willmott turns first and a very good

:55:23. > :55:30.fly 62.6. She has to work the backstroke, the turns of the

:55:31. > :55:38.American, Madeline Dirado, very good indeed. The currently do, Madeline

:55:39. > :55:51.Dirado. The white hat in the centre. Amy Wilmot is still going well. --

:55:52. > :55:56.the current leader. Madeline Dirado has qualified for the 200m

:55:57. > :56:02.backstroke and she will be making the most of this, her strength.

:56:03. > :56:06.Taking a bit of a lead from Aimee Willmott. It is important for her to

:56:07. > :56:11.stay with her. The backstroke is not her strongest will stop Madeline

:56:12. > :56:15.Dirado at the World Championships last year when she got the silver

:56:16. > :56:32.medal, she is coming back very strong. There she is going over

:56:33. > :56:35.first. That is the halfway mark of heat number four. Aimee Willmott

:56:36. > :56:45.lead after the flight, second after the backstroke, but Madeline Dirado

:56:46. > :56:50.is the strongest for the USA. Aimee Willmott is starting to catch up.

:56:51. > :56:56.Just in second place and this is a very good swim at the moment. With a

:56:57. > :57:06.really quick final heat, she has to put in a decent time, I think 4.35

:57:07. > :57:11.and she will be in. Madeline Dirado first, Aimee Willmott second. Aimee

:57:12. > :57:17.Willmott is catching up. Madeline Dirado going over. More tactical

:57:18. > :57:20.than anything. Aimee Willmott plain her real strength here on the breast

:57:21. > :57:29.rope, drawing level, Madeline Dirado has a very strong feel --

:57:30. > :57:36.breaststroke. Moving to the left, half a second, what a great breast

:57:37. > :57:43.stroke length. Coming back strongly in lane number five. There is Emily

:57:44. > :57:55.Overholt of Canada, sorry it is the Japanese swimmer, Miho Takahashi.

:57:56. > :58:00.The world record line is just in front of their nose. The world

:58:01. > :58:05.record was set within unbelievable final split, I do not believe them

:58:06. > :58:14.to get that close but if they can do a 4-point 34, that would be very

:58:15. > :58:19.good indeed. 50 metres to go. Two tenths of a second behind Madeline

:58:20. > :58:23.Dirado. A much stronger turn from Madeline Dirado. Half a second

:58:24. > :58:28.quicker from Aimee Willmott. Important or Aimee Willmott to do

:58:29. > :58:42.enough. Time matters, not necessarily position. Aimee Willmott

:58:43. > :58:55.has to dig in. Madeline Dirado may just hold on. The time is very good.

:58:56. > :58:58.Madeline Dirado wins. Aimee Willmott is just outside her lifetime best.

:58:59. > :59:04.I'm sure that will get her through to the final. A very strong swim,

:59:05. > :59:10.Madeline Dirado wins it, waves to the crowd, Aimee Willmott is second,

:59:11. > :59:18.she should do the same. Very good and the Olympic champion, the world

:59:19. > :59:26.record-holder, Shiwen Ye, is seventh. She has probably changed

:59:27. > :59:35.her training programme since London. For Aimee Willmott to hold Madeline

:59:36. > :59:40.Dirado is excellent. Madeline Dirado wins the first of the seeded heats,

:59:41. > :59:44.Aimee Willmott very good in second and should make the final. Should

:59:45. > :59:50.make the final, fingers crossed, very impressed with her? She looked

:59:51. > :59:53.great, really great. She is determined to get into the final, it

:59:54. > :59:56.is really hard when you are not in the last eight because you do not

:59:57. > :00:00.know what the other girls will do and Aimee Willmott wants to put that

:00:01. > :00:05.marker down. She is doing fantastic. She lost out a little bit on the

:00:06. > :00:06.freestyle. How difficult is it on the first
