:00:00. > :00:00.and Aimee Willmott wants to put that marker down. She is doing fantastic.
:00:00. > :00:10.She lost out a little bit on the freestyle. How difficult is it on
:00:11. > :00:17.the first day irons it is the build-up to the first days. That was
:00:18. > :00:25.a really mature swim, near her burst -- her first -- her best time.
:00:26. > :00:42.The final will be decided in this fifth heat. Hannah Miley.
:00:43. > :00:49.Final heat of the women's 400 medley, a very quick one indeed.
:00:50. > :00:56.Super start in lane four for the world champion, Katinka Hosszu of
:00:57. > :01:08.Hungary. Hannah Miley, the fly is not
:01:09. > :01:21.necessarily her strength. It is not bad at all. Very important for
:01:22. > :01:28.Hannah to stay close to Hosszu. She has raced her on numerous occasions,
:01:29. > :01:38.after coming second. Hosszu taking the lead. Sakiko Shimizu also doing
:01:39. > :01:51.well. Sakiko Shimizu. Hannah Miley, 63.1, part for the
:01:52. > :02:05.course. In the centre, that is the lane that
:02:06. > :02:09.Hosszu is swimming in. You can see the waves coming off Hosszu and they
:02:10. > :02:15.will be going right into Hannah. Hannah, I would move over if you
:02:16. > :02:18.can. Not sure she can hear me. She shouldn't be in that lane with this
:02:19. > :02:23.experience. She will lose some of the grip on the water. Not a bad
:02:24. > :02:28.first length. She is back into contention. Hosszu is dominant. She
:02:29. > :02:37.has an fantastically well this year. The only woman to do under 4.30 this
:02:38. > :02:43.year. Recently, again, broke that 4.30 barrier earlier this year.
:02:44. > :03:01.Should be one of those odds-on favourites for the race.
:03:02. > :03:12.This is Hannah's strong suit. The halfway point. Hannah Miley in the
:03:13. > :03:16.Red Hat has got some work to do. Hosszu looking very good indeed. I
:03:17. > :03:21.wonder if she will try to break this world record in this heat. No semis.
:03:22. > :03:26.Starting to come through in the centre now is Hannah Miley. It will
:03:27. > :03:31.be very difficult to get close to Hosszu in the final. Second, third,
:03:32. > :03:39.fourth, fifth. She is three seconds under the world record pace. That
:03:40. > :03:44.last 100 was ridiculous, but three seconds? She's trying to build up
:03:45. > :03:49.that amount of lead the world record, but she maybe got a 61.6 in
:03:50. > :03:56.her on the freestyle. She needs about three seconds ahead. The crowd
:03:57. > :04:03.are picking up on this. She has realised there is a potential
:04:04. > :04:06.record. Hosszu very, very strong. Interestingly, Sakiko Shimizu is
:04:07. > :04:13.right for the world record line, as well. This is a very fast race.
:04:14. > :04:18.Hannah Miley going well, as well. Can Hosszu get the world record?
:04:19. > :04:23.That world record line will catch her up very fast indeed, but she
:04:24. > :04:32.looks good at the moment. She is working really hard. She still has a
:04:33. > :04:37.great strong leg kick. 50 to go, we could see the world record here.
:04:38. > :04:41.That would be just brilliant. It is catching Harrop, though. They were
:04:42. > :04:46.so fast in London. Hannah Miley back into contention, into third place.
:04:47. > :04:50.Hosszu has to dig in deep, get those legs going to get the world record.
:04:51. > :04:54.I think it will be too much. Hannah Miley having a plastic last line.
:04:55. > :05:06.The crowd are really getting into it. 20 metres to go now, Hosszu. The
:05:07. > :05:14.world record stands at 4:28.3. It is going to be right on. Oh, my
:05:15. > :05:18.goodness me. Just outside of it. Just 15 100s of a second.
:05:19. > :05:22.Unbelievable swim. She was three seconds ahead with 100 metres to go.
:05:23. > :05:34.That's how fast that final 100 metres was. But Hosszu has done the
:05:35. > :05:38.job. She has made the final, as has Mireia Belmonte. Hannah Miley's time
:05:39. > :05:45.was very good, indeed. Aimee Willmott will have a good chance of
:05:46. > :05:48.making the final, as well. Maybe fourth or fifth. Hosszu very, very
:05:49. > :05:52.close to the world record. This is the lady that swims at multiple
:05:53. > :05:57.events all around the world all year. She enters five, six events in
:05:58. > :06:01.every meet she does. Very tough competitor. For her to go for the
:06:02. > :06:05.world record in the morning, it doesn't surprise me. She's very
:06:06. > :06:10.capable of having a rest and coming back for the final and trained
:06:11. > :06:15.again. Big schedule, obviously realised, yes, I was close. Hayhoe,
:06:16. > :06:40.next time. Tonight. Hannah Miley will go through to the
:06:41. > :06:45.final in fourth. Aimee Willmott will be in there, as well. Brilliant
:06:46. > :06:49.swimming. Great to see both British swimmers making that final. Really
:06:50. > :06:55.impressive. I'm not sure anyone will get close to Hosszu, but there will
:06:56. > :07:03.be a battle for the bronze. Confirmation of the final. That's
:07:04. > :07:15.battle for silver and bronze is huge. Aimee Willmott is now with
:07:16. > :07:20.Sharron. Fantastic swim. The great breaststroke. I am really happy with
:07:21. > :07:23.that. I wanted to get out in the race a bit more at these major
:07:24. > :07:27.meets. I have had a brain freeze on the block and I had nothing to worry
:07:28. > :07:31.about here. I forgot about all of that and my family was in the
:07:32. > :07:37.stands, I waved at them before. I really enjoyed that race. Some hard
:07:38. > :07:43.times coming out with the Chinese and you have another behind you, so
:07:44. > :07:46.you have to last time. 100%. Some of the girls in the heats where
:07:47. > :07:53.swimming 40 and that is a decent time. I reckon it will have to be a
:07:54. > :08:00.bit quicker to make it back here. I gave it everything this morning.
:08:01. > :08:04.Good start today. Max is in my training group. I sat in the stands
:08:05. > :08:09.and watched him. In doing well made it a little bit more calming. I've
:08:10. > :08:13.been having so much fun here with Mel and Max and Adam and Molly and
:08:14. > :08:19.Chloe and I just kind of get out there and enjoy it and I'm happy
:08:20. > :08:23.with my time. Good luck tonight. So, two British swimmers go into the
:08:24. > :08:28.final of the women's 400 metre individual medley. Great swims from
:08:29. > :08:32.both Aimee Willmott and Hannah Miley. They will give themselves a
:08:33. > :08:36.little hope for a medal. Maybe an outside hope, but they hope
:08:37. > :08:41.nonetheless. We've had a fantastic day, day one on the Olympic Park, as
:08:42. > :08:46.the sun starts to move its way down. It is at that point of the day that
:08:47. > :08:51.we hand over to Dan Walker on Copacabana Beach. I'm sure you have
:08:52. > :08:55.the sand between your toes. I shall be down on the beach
:08:56. > :08:59.shortly. Thanks for that. Welcome to Copacabana beach. It is our huge
:09:00. > :09:05.pleasure to welcome you to our home for the next 16 days. This is the
:09:06. > :09:09.avenue Atlantique behind us. This is where the road race started a few
:09:10. > :09:13.hours ago. Chris Froome and the rest of Team GB with a medal chance and
:09:14. > :09:18.you can watch a bit of that on BBC One. We might be joined by some of
:09:19. > :09:21.the medallists later in our Copacabana studio. We will be here
:09:22. > :09:25.for the duration of the Olympics. It is not just about our home here. We
:09:26. > :09:28.have to go on a wander and show you what the beach looks like. It is
:09:29. > :09:33.glorious today. Around 30 degrees down here, which is why I look so
:09:34. > :09:39.daft in a pair of trousers. It is the BBC. If you see naked flesh,
:09:40. > :09:45.apologies, but it is a beach. Let's be adult about this. This is exactly
:09:46. > :09:49.where our position on BBC Four will be every single afternoon here in
:09:50. > :09:54.Rio, early evening for you, through to 2am. This way, the BBC One
:09:55. > :09:57.Studios are just down here and I suppose we could show you the
:09:58. > :10:03.geography of this place to give you a good idea exactly how it works. We
:10:04. > :10:08.are here in Copacabana Beach. That's our beach hut or kiosk. About a
:10:09. > :10:14.five-minute work further down away from us is our BBC One studio. Hazel
:10:15. > :10:18.is there this morning, Jason tonight. The Beach Volleyball Arena
:10:19. > :10:25.20 minute walk for you down there and you can see it, can't you? One
:10:26. > :10:29.of the great... Not eyesores. One of the great... Things you can see
:10:30. > :10:33.across the world. Sugarloaf mountain in the background. From here, as the
:10:34. > :10:38.sun sets in around two hours, it will get dark, fruity, we have
:10:39. > :10:44.plenty lined up. We love you to get involved. We have all this on the
:10:45. > :10:51.way. We'll be heading to the swimming later on. We will see if
:10:52. > :10:58.Adam Peaty starts his campaign for gold in the 100 metres backstroke
:10:59. > :11:01.heats. There's a gold up for grabs in the archery in the men's team
:11:02. > :11:05.event. Italy won last time in London, but the South Koreans are
:11:06. > :11:14.desperate to take back the Olympic title they won four times. We shall
:11:15. > :11:18.be at the boxing, too. Joe Cordina starts his campaign for the
:11:19. > :11:23.lightweights and also keep an eye on the heavyweight division. And we got
:11:24. > :11:30.women's football later on tonight as American legend Hope Solo wins
:11:31. > :12:09.capped number 200. Those are some of the highlights.
:12:10. > :12:15.So many ways for you to get in on the action over the course of the
:12:16. > :12:19.next 16 days. You can watch it all on BBC One at the moment. There is
:12:20. > :12:23.the cycling, the men's road race. It started here, it will finish here.
:12:24. > :12:27.Within the hour, they are on the streets of downtown Rio now. That is
:12:28. > :12:30.on the Red Button now. You can access everything across eight
:12:31. > :12:35.channels depending on whether you have a funky set-top box or not. The
:12:36. > :12:39.men's team gymnastics currently up for grabs. You can go to the BBC
:12:40. > :12:44.sport website and the application where you can watch every single
:12:45. > :12:49.sport taking place shown live. You will not miss a single second of
:12:50. > :12:53.what ever sports takes your fancy. We would love you to get involved,
:12:54. > :12:57.as well. Plenty of time on BBC Four. We highly here for nine hours every
:12:58. > :13:08.single day. If you're on social media, please get involved.
:13:09. > :13:13.#BBCRio2016. Sending your comments, hopefully we be joined by athletes
:13:14. > :13:17.down here. We would love you to tell us what you're doing, watching the
:13:18. > :13:21.Olympics, where you are, what your hopes and dreams the next couple of
:13:22. > :13:25.weeks. We will now switch to the tennis. We had from Heather Watson
:13:26. > :13:28.on the BBC a couple of days ago talking about how excited she is to
:13:29. > :13:38.be year and how much she enjoying the Team GB experience. She is in
:13:39. > :13:45.first round action against Peng Shuai. She won the first set.
:13:46. > :13:50.COMMENTATOR: Heather Watson had this much under control ten minutes ago,
:13:51. > :13:56.taking the first set 6-4. Breaking to go 4-3 in the second, but Peng
:13:57. > :14:00.Shuai has fought valiantly and is now a game away from taking this
:14:01. > :14:09.into the fourth set. It has been a hard one. Heather was broken quite
:14:10. > :14:15.easily from Peng Shuai and seems to have the balance of power. A
:14:16. > :14:16.gorgeous day. Debilitating for the players, 30 degrees. Very little
:14:17. > :14:24.breeze. Heather has to regroup and see if
:14:25. > :14:27.you can come again in the second set. The second match since she won
:14:28. > :14:47.the mixed at Wimbledon. She is on a bad trot in singles,
:14:48. > :14:52.believe it or not. The mixed at Wimbledon in between, she has lost
:14:53. > :14:54.four successive matches will stop Peng Shuai, coming back from injury,
:14:55. > :15:16.has lost five successive matches. It's going to need calibre like that
:15:17. > :15:21.to put Peng Shuai away. The won she has been serving in the opening set.
:15:22. > :15:23.Had it serves very well. I presented first serve, a few aces, and then
:15:24. > :16:00.suddenly lost her way. That has been the tactic that has
:16:01. > :16:06.worked so well when she has pushed the angles. She has served wide very
:16:07. > :16:10.effectively beforehand has been created opening up the Court of the
:16:11. > :16:31.Chinese player to good effect. But when Heather puts the ball
:16:32. > :16:39.through the belly of the court, Peng Shuai has been Dick taking with
:16:40. > :16:41.effect. When she gets on the front foot, she is a real handful --
:16:42. > :17:07.dictating. You can see why it is so affect
:17:08. > :17:09.live. -- effect them. Heather is showing some mental fortitude, she
:17:10. > :17:17.must have been really upset with herself, look to be in a winning
:17:18. > :17:21.position. She has served well. Peng Shuai with an ever menacing presence
:17:22. > :17:40.in this set. Too much. She looked at the umpire
:17:41. > :18:08.as if it was her fault! That is right!
:18:09. > :18:26.15-15. Peng Shuai is a bit more frugal in that regard.
:18:27. > :18:42.She has been hitting this shot well all match, getting plenty of up and
:18:43. > :18:54.down and spin on the ball, immediately finds the line.
:18:55. > :19:05.A cracking return and it was set up ideally, it seemed. The perfect
:19:06. > :19:11.forehand return, got on the front foot nicely, skips around, had the
:19:12. > :19:20.open court, just went wide, you can sense the frustration. She will
:19:21. > :19:43.remember that one. Maybe not, break point. To break for the second time
:19:44. > :20:48.Yes! Thunderous response therefrom Heather. On calling those shoulders
:20:49. > :21:18.so fast against the hips here, committing with a capital C.
:21:19. > :21:27.Great rearguard action but it was not enough. So Watson breaks again
:21:28. > :21:35.and it will be Watson who will be serving for the match. It is all
:21:36. > :21:40.happening on day one, we will leave Heather Watson there. You can
:21:41. > :21:46.continue to watchers serving for that match in the first round of the
:21:47. > :21:50.tennis on the BBC Sport app. The reason we have left that is we have
:21:51. > :22:02.a world champion and world record holder going in the heats of the RS
:22:03. > :22:20.stroke. Add TT is in action -- breaststroke -- add PT. # Adam
:22:21. > :22:27.Peaty. It has not been that fast so far, what can they do. I think they
:22:28. > :22:34.are in great positions, next to each other. There is Ross Murdoch. Adam
:22:35. > :22:39.Peaty, great shot, the two British boys and there is the world record
:22:40. > :22:44.holder, the world number one, the favourite to win the other big
:22:45. > :22:57.title, Adam Peaty. Ross Murdoch will give him a run for his money, I
:22:58. > :23:00.think. The final heat of the 100m breaststroke and the world
:23:01. > :23:06.record-holder, European champion, Commonwealth champion has started
:23:07. > :23:12.very well indeed. Adam Peaty in the red hat with Ross Murdoch also going
:23:13. > :23:18.well. Great start from Adam Peaty. So strong. I cannot wait to see the
:23:19. > :23:28.split. It would not surprise me if he went for right now. 26.6 nine.
:23:29. > :23:32.His stroke looks fantastic. He is holding what well. Let us see what
:23:33. > :23:38.he has got left. He is really going well, pushing his stroke. Extremely
:23:39. > :23:47.fast. It's good the massive world record if he can hold on to it. He
:23:48. > :24:00.is swimming away from the field. 57.9 two. 57.5! Half a second
:24:01. > :24:05.underneath the world record. A massive heat from Adam Peaty, he did
:24:06. > :24:12.not need to do it, but he blew the field away. Massive world record.
:24:13. > :24:16.One and a half seconds faster than the rest of the field. He is the
:24:17. > :24:23.odds-on and what a brilliant world record. Stick it in there, let the
:24:24. > :24:31.rest of the field worry about it. Adam Peaty is brilliant at turning
:24:32. > :24:39.everything into an opportunity. After that, they will be worried
:24:40. > :24:46.about him. Ross Murdoch swam well and he will be in the semi-finals.
:24:47. > :24:50.He was third. Goodness me! Three towns underneath world record pace
:24:51. > :24:56.at the halfway stage, thumbs up, you are kidding me! I would do a dance.
:24:57. > :25:06.That is utterly stunning! His stroke is fantastic. Ross Murdoch
:25:07. > :25:10.congratulating him. Adam Peaty, powerful, all powerful, leading the
:25:11. > :25:19.world out of these heats and into the semis. There is confirmation of
:25:20. > :25:23.the result. A new world record for ten two, he looks tremendous! Ross
:25:24. > :25:34.Murdoch in third and he will be in the semi-finals -- Adam Peaty. That
:25:35. > :25:42.was a nice start. Can we get a little round of applause? Adam Peaty
:25:43. > :25:45.that was, from Team GB, come on! He goes in the semi-finals later. We
:25:46. > :25:56.are having tech eagle issues that the swimming. We will get reaction
:25:57. > :26:00.later -- technical. We had erupted Heather Watson so let us go back to
:26:01. > :26:05.the tennis. We left when she was serving for the match in the first
:26:06. > :26:12.round against Peng Shuai. Back to the Tennis Centre on BBC Four. Here
:26:13. > :26:40.we go. Watson serving for a place in the second round of the Olympics.
:26:41. > :26:55.That was an edgy choice, wasn't it? The nerves she must be feeling. --
:26:56. > :27:14.betraying. It nearly reached the net.
:27:15. > :27:20.It is almost as if the poor drop shot choice contaminated the next
:27:21. > :28:07.serving point. Ever alert. Overdid the length. Watson, a sigh
:28:08. > :29:02.of relief. Sparse clap but it has swelled as this match has regressed.
:29:03. > :29:14.What a shot. Timely brilliance from Peng Shuai, where did it come from?
:29:15. > :29:19.Tough to get a read from a racket face, so well disguise, Heather
:29:20. > :29:23.playing a solid point, look at this. Wonderful creativity from the
:29:24. > :29:29.Chinese player. She must have been exhausted, she did so much running
:29:30. > :30:13.on that point. She has a chance to take us into a tie-break.
:30:14. > :30:21.And rather strange shot. The shop she won, the drop shot, came out of
:30:22. > :30:23.nowhere. That, just don't know what to expect at the moment from Peng
:30:24. > :31:18.Shuai. Didn't really get the angle she
:31:19. > :31:28.wanted. Another chance for the Chinese. Heather responding very
:31:29. > :31:52.centrally through the court. Almost scared to pull an angle.
:31:53. > :32:02.Did ask for trouble and duly got it. Heather Watson can't be in the best
:32:03. > :32:08.frame of mind as we go into this break. Twice she's been beaten back.
:32:09. > :32:14.Peng Shuai showing real resilience. Can she turn it to her advantage?
:32:15. > :32:25.Such a brave break point return from Peng Shuai.
:32:26. > :32:57.You feel she has the momentum going into this breaker.
:32:58. > :33:08.Just a little late on it. Watson getting a kick-start to the
:33:09. > :33:41.tie-breaker. I'd like to see a kick serve here.
:33:42. > :33:48.She felt a little perturbed in the first set when she felt the calls
:33:49. > :33:50.were going against her. She was cutting it fine there, but just what
:33:51. > :34:20.she wanted. Get up the court and really hit it,
:34:21. > :34:23.that's what she's saying to herself. Both players looking desperately to
:34:24. > :34:27.get on the front but on return of serve. It has been a telling factor
:34:28. > :34:31.in this batch, especially when their opponent is down on second serve.
:34:32. > :34:47.Real opportunity on this slow surface to take advantage.
:34:48. > :34:54.Got the line again. That's the second time, same line. Going to
:34:55. > :34:57.have a look at it. It must have been close. Can she see a mark? Doesn't
:34:58. > :35:38.look like it. It's not the first time that's
:35:39. > :35:45.happened. It looked such an inviting drop shot from Watson and Peng
:35:46. > :35:49.should have got it done. Far too high from Heather Watson there. Peng
:35:50. > :36:27.just unable to control it. She's looking down as if it was an
:36:28. > :36:32.erratic bounce. I don't think so. It was just slow. It is a slow port. It
:36:33. > :36:42.is and Heather did the right thing. The idea was excellent, just not the
:36:43. > :36:49.execution. -- a slow quart. -- court. The play is very edgy.
:36:50. > :36:53.Heather has been playing so well with angle, just a little reticent
:36:54. > :36:59.that this is an age to take risks and opened the court to the Chinese
:37:00. > :37:02.player. Peng certainly very tidy from return of serve, as well. It is
:37:03. > :37:14.anybody's set right now. Heather's just kind of dropped off
:37:15. > :37:16.that crest of high serving percentage first serves in. Made her
:37:17. > :37:35.a bit more vulnerable. No Hawk-Eye here. Just have to
:37:36. > :37:49.accept it. Will. Plenty of heightened leeway. It was
:37:50. > :38:21.never in danger of hitting the net. Good serve. We spoke about first
:38:22. > :38:24.serve, how important it is to land that, but Peng has served 20% were
:38:25. > :38:47.first serves in this set than the opening set.
:38:48. > :38:54.She's pushed forward. For such a doubles player, she's looked so ill
:38:55. > :38:58.at ease at the net. She hasn't been as effective as in the past, but
:38:59. > :39:02.that was a heavily loaded slice from Heather there. Stayed low. Peng
:39:03. > :39:56.unable to dig it out. Peng didn't have any control on that
:39:57. > :40:00.final volley, but it landed where she would have placed it. It landed
:40:01. > :40:04.really deep, made for an awkward pass from Heather who had an awful
:40:05. > :40:08.lot of time on that, almost too much and spilled wide in response. Tee
:40:09. > :41:05.set point for Peng Shuai. -- two. What a chance! Will that haunt her.
:41:06. > :41:42.Can she get it done with this serve? Set point number two.
:41:43. > :41:51.Depth was decisive. To be honest, Peng Shuai deserves it. Terrific
:41:52. > :41:58.rearguard action. Twice Watson was a break up but couldn't get it done
:41:59. > :42:02.and we going to a third set here. We shall be rejoining Simon Reed and
:42:03. > :42:05.Paul Hand for that deciding set in the first round of the women's
:42:06. > :42:09.tennis from the Olympic Tennis Centre, which is around 13 miles
:42:10. > :42:15.that way. I give you some more geography later. This is our base on
:42:16. > :42:18.Copacabana Beach, BBC Four, if you are just joining us. We have a
:42:19. > :42:25.helicopter overhead because the men's Road race will be finishing
:42:26. > :42:30.around half a mile behind us. It has not been the best of days for Team
:42:31. > :42:34.GB. That is live on BBC One at the moment. About 20 minutes ago, we had
:42:35. > :42:39.our first world record for Team GB at these games. They came in the for
:42:40. > :42:42.Adam Peaty in heats for the 100 metres breaststroke. He's into the
:42:43. > :42:47.semifinal and after that world record, he spoke to Sharron Davies.
:42:48. > :42:56.Adam, what possesses you to go in and swim like that? Laying down your
:42:57. > :43:04.cards? Showing a bit of a hand. What was I in? NT 6.60 nine. I have been
:43:05. > :43:13.practising for a while. I had the crowd screaming more. I just enjoyed
:43:14. > :43:16.my first Olympic Games and I'm an official Olympian now. It is great
:43:17. > :43:19.to get out here and enjoy the atmosphere. It doesn't matter what
:43:20. > :43:27.country they are wrong, they all say, Adam, well done, which is what
:43:28. > :43:31.the Olympics is about. USB hunting the British team. Hopefully tonight
:43:32. > :43:36.a better performance, the final, see what we've got. Hopefully I will
:43:37. > :43:40.give the confidence to other swimmers, it is what you've done all
:43:41. > :43:44.your life, and hopefully that will translate to the kids back home
:43:45. > :43:49.watching, or anyone who wants to get involved in swimming. You come to
:43:50. > :43:55.this arena, people feel a bit scared. It is scary. Once you are in
:43:56. > :43:59.the lane, it is amazing. Is one thing you are bringing to British
:44:00. > :44:06.swimming. The whole of the squad has done well today. Everyone in finals.
:44:07. > :44:10.It is really great. Our job is not done until we got those medals
:44:11. > :44:16.around our neck. We are looking to get the best performers now, get my
:44:17. > :44:23.head down and see what happens. Well done. Thank you. A very satisfied
:44:24. > :44:30.Adam Peaty talking to Sharron Davies. Let's get more reaction from
:44:31. > :44:33.Mark Foster and Rebecca Adlington. Very happy and justifiably so.
:44:34. > :44:40.Unbelievable swim from him this morning. For me, the key phrase
:44:41. > :44:45.today is he rocks my world. That was you halfway through that race. How
:44:46. > :44:49.impressed were you? From start to finish, his start was so much better
:44:50. > :44:52.than we have seen at the World Championships and Commonwealth
:44:53. > :44:56.Games. He has been working on the start. He dug it out there and swung
:44:57. > :45:00.his own race. He didn't get fazed that it was his first Olympics. He
:45:01. > :45:06.wanted to lay down his mark and say, I am here and I am not losing even
:45:07. > :45:12.in a heat. Not .4 of a world record isn't a little bit, it is so insane
:45:13. > :45:15.you cannot get your head around the fact that someone is one 100 metres
:45:16. > :45:21.backstroke in that time. Was that given breaststroke?
:45:22. > :45:29.Normally world records over 100 metres are done by not .01 of the
:45:30. > :45:33.second. We said coming into these championships, he would put a gold
:45:34. > :45:37.medal around his neck if he did what he did before but he has done
:45:38. > :45:47.better. The start was amazing. He just looked immense. You saw him
:45:48. > :45:52.swimming back down. His technique was great. He is a locomotive. You
:45:53. > :45:59.cannot question that what he does, his attitude is impeccable. He came
:46:00. > :46:01.in, world champion, European champion, Commonwealth champion and
:46:02. > :46:08.world record holder, talk us through that start. We have always seen, as
:46:09. > :46:16.the rounds go on, he loses about half a body length. His reaction
:46:17. > :46:22.time is always good. It is the transition from entering the water,
:46:23. > :46:31.he loses so much. But he took off, his temper was up, he holds the
:46:32. > :46:38.water well. Becky turned to me and said, I am not worried about Adam!
:46:39. > :46:42.No one stood out. He looked so smooth and so easy. We saw last
:46:43. > :46:47.year, but act that normally it is his last 25 metres were he pulls
:46:48. > :46:53.through, but he did not do that here. He has been working on that
:46:54. > :46:57.tack deck and looking at the other swimmers and he is such a mature
:46:58. > :47:04.athlete. You would think this was his third Olympic Games! His
:47:05. > :47:11.attitude is incredible. When he was talking to Sharon, he seemed so
:47:12. > :47:15.relax. That is what they have trained for. Him and his coach have
:47:16. > :47:17.a great relationship, that is what they have been working for and what
:47:18. > :47:23.all the training has been years towards. It is not a surprise to
:47:24. > :47:27.him, he knows that is what he is capable of. They will have talked
:47:28. > :47:33.before coming in here, he has put down a marker. He destroyed by world
:47:34. > :47:38.record. That puts a marker down, it shows the others that you are here
:47:39. > :47:45.and on form. None of them have been within one second of that world
:47:46. > :47:49.record. How key is it having that knowledge going into the
:47:50. > :47:55.semi-finals? I went for Adam he has done this for the past two years, he
:47:56. > :47:59.has not lost a heat. He has literally won every single round
:48:00. > :48:05.occurs in the back of his mind, he thought that Rio was the bigger
:48:06. > :48:12.picture. Adam has always had this in the back of his mind. Let us talk
:48:13. > :48:20.about Ross. He can chase down the guy in front. He likes to race. The
:48:21. > :48:25.start was not great and hopefully if he gets about right in the
:48:26. > :48:34.semi-finals, silver and wrongs are up for grabs. Adam is out there. --
:48:35. > :48:38.bronze. There is still an opportunity. What he did in the
:48:39. > :48:41.World Championships was when the final comes around, we saw in the
:48:42. > :48:49.Commonwealth Games when he won in the breast stroke, he performs and I
:48:50. > :48:54.think he will have fought not the best, but still add decent swim. His
:48:55. > :49:00.backend is much stronger, he does not have the same speed as Adam and
:49:01. > :49:06.he has come down from the 200. It is different tack X. He is an occasion
:49:07. > :49:13.swimmer and his next occasion will be in this pool later. Adam
:49:14. > :49:20.continues his quest for an Olympic title to add to everything else he
:49:21. > :49:31.already has. What were the technical issues? Is it so hot that everything
:49:32. > :49:38.is overheating? Yes. That was just from the swimmer by Adam Peaty!
:49:39. > :49:44.Steamer came off about what! Excuse the sweaty mess. There are thousands
:49:45. > :49:47.of holes in the roof to create a natural ventilation system will stop
:49:48. > :49:53.unfortunately it is boiling outside. We are now in a pressure cooker. The
:49:54. > :49:59.Brazilians are allowed and proud. They are brilliant. The two
:50:00. > :50:05.Brazilians are the best two swimmers and this place will go mad tonight.
:50:06. > :50:11.Do not get too hot. You can dip your feet in the sea! Mark Foster has on
:50:12. > :50:18.shorts, I have to wear a long trousers. Do not show my bare feet!
:50:19. > :50:24.Every single tweet is asking why I am being forced to wear trousers? At
:50:25. > :50:32.some stage I might get my legs out. Let me show you our audience here. A
:50:33. > :50:35.bit more than that! Your live on the BBC!
:50:36. > :50:41.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. The guys in the middle, that is Roy, he is from
:50:42. > :50:50.Brighton and his cousin Herbert who has come all the way from barbarian!
:50:51. > :50:56.We will be watching men's basketball tomorrow. Enjoy the basketball
:50:57. > :51:01.tomorrow. I do not think there is basketball on today. We are going to
:51:02. > :51:07.look at the tennis. Here is what you can watch on BBC Four and around the
:51:08. > :51:15.Olympics on day one. Is archery, the men's semi-finals is on the website
:51:16. > :51:21.or on the sport at. It is currently the men's team semifinal, South
:51:22. > :51:24.Korea are taking on Australia. Italy are out. South Korea are the
:51:25. > :51:31.favourites and are desperate to win. We will show you that final later.
:51:32. > :51:37.We have gymnastics later and this is available right now on the Red
:51:38. > :51:43.Button. What you are watching is the rotation in the team qualification.
:51:44. > :51:51.The great British men are involved. That is coming later. -- the men
:51:52. > :51:57.from Great Britain. Keep your texts and tweets coming in. People are
:51:58. > :52:05.talking about shorts and trousers. Lots of debate using the hashtag BBC
:52:06. > :52:08.Rio 2016. Talking about the road race. We will bring you up-to-date
:52:09. > :52:15.with what happened. It was an amazing race. Brutal in the hills.
:52:16. > :52:20.It started down here just behind us and finish there as well. Sadly
:52:21. > :52:26.Chris Frew had a chance for a long way, he had to change his bike, --
:52:27. > :52:36.Chris Frew. Great Thomas crashed out. He was probably the best
:52:37. > :52:41.placed. It is no dream finish for Chris Froome. He gets another chance
:52:42. > :52:48.in the time trial. Four years ago Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de
:52:49. > :52:54.France, won the time trial at London 2012. The time trial will be in four
:52:55. > :53:01.days' time for Chris Froome. The Belgian won today. No gold medal for
:53:02. > :53:05.Team GB. They have had a world record in the swimming pool for Adam
:53:06. > :53:09.Peaty and he goes again in the semi-finals of the 100 metres breast
:53:10. > :53:17.stroke. Heather Watson started well in the tennis. She won the first set
:53:18. > :53:22.and lost the second, she is up a break in the third and deciding set
:53:23. > :53:31.in the Tennis Centre. Let us rejoin Arab commentator team.
:53:32. > :53:40.Nip and tuck so far. Watson getting an early break. She has had to save
:53:41. > :53:44.a couple of break points here in this game. This one is far from
:53:45. > :54:17.over. Watson making too many mistakes. She
:54:18. > :54:22.is wrestling with her own mind. She did not exhibit to reflect
:54:23. > :54:27.frontrunning skills when she was serving. She was unable to cross the
:54:28. > :54:36.finish line, here she is grappling with herself. -- great frontrunning
:54:37. > :54:48.skills. Another mistake and the lead has
:54:49. > :55:00.evaporated. She went for that which was
:55:01. > :55:03.encouraging, because when she has been doing her best in this match is
:55:04. > :55:09.when she has gone for angles, got on the front foot, but in the last 15
:55:10. > :55:14.minutes or so, she is not so much on the front foot and this match is
:55:15. > :55:20.wide open. It is really yo-yoing everywhere. She is so adept at
:55:21. > :55:27.wriggling out of jail, it is like Houdini. Heather has had
:55:28. > :55:32.opportunities and Peng Shuai has met the play. A couple of high forehand
:55:33. > :55:37.loops making play difficult for Heather. Heather commendably going
:55:38. > :55:42.for it but not managing to execute and create a bit of space between
:55:43. > :55:47.her and her opponent today who has been with her throughout. It must be
:55:48. > :55:53.tempting, especially when it is going to be tight for however long
:55:54. > :55:57.the match last, when you have made errors, you're tempted to play safe
:55:58. > :56:03.but she cannot. She has to take the play to Peng Shuai and try and
:56:04. > :56:07.create the angle, get off the court because when she is through the
:56:08. > :56:15.belly of the court, she has proved dangerous. She hits it hard and
:56:16. > :56:20.flat, there is a lucky cow, that she has on the courtside. Leading on to
:56:21. > :56:37.every little clutch that she can to find a way full. -- find a way.
:56:38. > :56:56.This match now is beyond two hours. The heat will tell. Peng Shuai have
:56:57. > :56:58.that awful experience in New York when she was carried off in a
:56:59. > :57:05.wheelchair following complete body cramp. I do not want to be alarmist,
:57:06. > :57:12.but that must be a little bit in the back of her mind. I hope she is well
:57:13. > :57:17.hydrated, old players are sweating profusely. It has been a tough court
:57:18. > :57:21.to play on, very slow and gritty. Fairly recently laid, this whole
:57:22. > :57:27.centre and boat players are struggling to hit through the court
:57:28. > :57:28.with pace and effect and it has rendered a lot of mistakes as a
:57:29. > :57:51.consequence -- both players. Just the job. Six aces for her now.
:57:52. > :57:54.You have to take your hat off to her, she has been upping that
:57:55. > :58:10.service percentage commendably since the start of the match.
:58:11. > :58:40.Watson has to be aggressive on the return as she was there.
:58:41. > :58:48.That is good to see from Heather, really positive wind from Heather
:58:49. > :58:56.Watson their, rate comfort tennis from the return. Look at the
:58:57. > :58:57.accuracy and pace she played with, getting on here, short response,
:58:58. > :59:17.multiple options. On the evidence of what we have seen
:59:18. > :59:22.consistently through this match, you feel that Heather Watson needs a bit
:59:23. > :59:37.more of a cushion and a couple of -- couple of games. Chance for her
:59:38. > :59:40.second rake in this set. -- break. It was bad after all she has
:59:41. > :00:07.achieved in this game. Opportunity gone.
:00:08. > :00:15.I hate to say that there seems to be a seed of doubt in the mind of
:00:16. > :00:20.Heather creeping in from a previous loss having squandered three match
:00:21. > :00:22.point opportunities at Wimbledon. Let us see if she can get across
:00:23. > :00:48.line. Commendably, she made the return but
:00:49. > :01:17.Shuai Peng very brave there from the backhand side.
:01:18. > :01:22.Defending valiantly there, Watson's double hand into the backhand corner
:01:23. > :01:40.was going to be successful but she just got enough onto it.
:01:41. > :01:51.Dame. Watson is complaining that the Serb was out. No poor guy here but I
:01:52. > :01:58.think it is about 50/50 here in the way the doubtful calls have gone. It
:01:59. > :02:04.is a bit like a luck, it tends to balance out. You have to get that
:02:05. > :02:07.out of your head as a player. Heather is unable to extend any
:02:08. > :02:13.daylight between her and her opponent. They have deadlock in this
:02:14. > :02:27.set. Peng has been strong throughout, having to play catch up.
:02:28. > :02:40.She was ranked 14th in the world and now 264. Describe what they say
:02:41. > :02:46.about winning being a habit, a? One of these two has to break the habit.
:02:47. > :03:50.Watson has lost her last four and Peng has lost her last five.
:03:51. > :03:56.That is gorgeous, absolutely beautiful the way she came around
:03:57. > :03:57.the side of the ball. Jeremy Bates is getting a suntan and pretty
:03:58. > :04:42.pleased with that one as well. Game Watson. A comfortable hold for
:04:43. > :04:47.Watson. She leads 3-2. When she won the Mixed Doubles everyone was
:04:48. > :04:51.saying it could be career changing and, if as all the good judges I
:04:52. > :04:55.spoke to, if they are right about Heather, that actually she is a
:04:56. > :04:58.better player than even she thinks, then maybe actually winning the
:04:59. > :05:03.mixed helps an awful lot at times like this. Yes, it is almost like
:05:04. > :05:11.the believing follows the results sometimes. This happened to other
:05:12. > :05:20.players with 35 career doubles titles which give a lot of belief
:05:21. > :05:24.that infuses into the singles play. It should permeate through. Moments
:05:25. > :05:30.like these are so critical for any player's development and/or both
:05:31. > :05:34.players want this so badly that they are stifled in that regard. If
:05:35. > :05:42.Heather can find the way through it could open the door to free swinging
:05:43. > :05:47.with abandon almost. She is certainly a gorgeous ball striker.
:05:48. > :05:52.She opens the point really well and opens the opponents caught well with
:05:53. > :05:56.this great angle and she has put herself in endless commanding
:05:57. > :05:58.positions, but she cannot quite get across the finish line at the
:05:59. > :06:37.moment. Oh, yes. We were all sold on the
:06:38. > :06:42.forehand in the last one but she disguised that with the body
:06:43. > :06:46.position. Excellently executed. It is this next one here, I thought she
:06:47. > :07:01.was going with the oft one. As did Peng.
:07:02. > :07:12.No messing there. Worked the point so well. It is almost as if Peng has
:07:13. > :07:16.this deep-seated belief, mentally she has been so super resilient
:07:17. > :07:17.today that now she is coming to terms with the patterns of play of
:07:18. > :08:14.Heather as well. This is her chance to go break up
:08:15. > :08:59.again. A strange choice to come in but it
:09:00. > :09:03.worked for her. It is testament to her athleticism, it was an excellent
:09:04. > :09:08.stretched her right there, terrific. It ended up being a great drop
:09:09. > :09:13.volley, so well played, ever. There is a tendency here where Heather
:09:14. > :09:17.goes 2-0 up and then gets paid to 2-2 but in the next run of games can
:09:18. > :10:00.she hold for 4-2. Take your point, the last three
:10:01. > :10:22.times she broken ahead she has immediately been broken back.
:10:23. > :10:38.She's dealt with the high balls so well, but not on that occasion. Peng
:10:39. > :10:43.will just not lie down. She has fought valiantly throughout. She is
:10:44. > :11:04.dangerous when she is behind. She was disappointed with that
:11:05. > :11:41.return. It is was wide but she was onto it.
:11:42. > :11:49.Yes, that did look edgy. No feel on that shot at all. No, the body shape
:11:50. > :11:57.around it was not terrific. The setup. She has had chances for the
:11:58. > :12:29.immediate break back again. It is incomprehensible that she
:12:30. > :12:31.missed that shot. It really is, she is normally so good at those kind of
:12:32. > :13:04.short returns. This time she does take it. Once
:13:05. > :13:10.again Watson goes a break-up and gets pegged back straightaway. It
:13:11. > :13:20.has been a recurring theme in this match. Yes, almost taunted by mental
:13:21. > :13:25.demons. In this match it seems like she suffers from vertigo as she
:13:26. > :13:30.heads to the heights looks as though she will close out the match but it
:13:31. > :13:35.is not to be. It is weird. You can see there are hardly any spectators
:13:36. > :13:41.here, 50 or 60. Certainly no more, and yet this is a huge match. You
:13:42. > :13:45.can see how it is preying on the nerves of both players, particularly
:13:46. > :13:56.Watson. Yes, they so desperately want to get across the finish line,
:13:57. > :13:59.both of them, that they both kind of tighten up when they least need it.
:14:00. > :14:01.It is often the way, the reverse psychological dynamics. The few
:14:02. > :14:07.bands that are the are having fun. This is a watchable match. Still
:14:08. > :14:14.almost impossible to pick. Yes, absolutely. If anyone can pick the
:14:15. > :14:22.winner they know more than we do. Yes. Two hours and 22 minutes we
:14:23. > :15:17.have been going. Well taken. Will that give her
:15:18. > :15:24.confidence? An emphatic bounce smash put away. It is funny, isn't it? It
:15:25. > :15:32.is the slightest of things like that that can suddenly turn it for you.
:15:33. > :15:42.Tennis is such a mental game. Is she starting to struggle?
:15:43. > :15:55.It's been an exhausting match. In very nearly brutal heat. She has
:15:56. > :15:58.done the bulk of the running. She is starting to cramp again? Maybe that
:15:59. > :16:15.is one of her stretches to keep her back loose. Maybe.
:16:16. > :16:28.If there is anything that can test her back as much as this match, she
:16:29. > :16:32.would not want to know about it. Heather Watson ratcheting up the
:16:33. > :16:49.intensity in that last point, encouragingly.
:16:50. > :16:56.That was a mini synopsis of what we saw in the opening set from Heather,
:16:57. > :17:01.wonderful use of the court, spreading play nicely with good use
:17:02. > :17:33.of the forehand angle. A chance for her third break in this set.
:17:34. > :17:41.So, Watson, one game away once more from the match. Serving for the
:17:42. > :17:45.match in the second set, pegged back, lost the break-up. Here she
:17:46. > :17:52.is, can she be strong here? Mentally as as physically. It's been a nervy
:17:53. > :17:52.nailbiter throughout, and if you can just
:17:53. > :17:57.nailbiter throughout, and if you can just get across this kind of match,
:17:58. > :17:58.it would give her the world of belief and free her off for the next
:17:59. > :18:40.round. A positive second serve, pretty
:18:41. > :19:15.deep. Did not have much on it. All sorts of things going on
:19:16. > :19:29.between. A great response, two match points
:19:30. > :19:59.for Heather Watson. She has hit both lines! Heather is
:20:00. > :20:07.more worried about the previous shot, she thought that was out. She
:20:08. > :20:09.can see the funny side of it. Her heart was in her mouth, she thought
:20:10. > :21:09.the first was out. Well played. Working the points so
:21:10. > :21:16.well. She has been so brave, Peng, flirting with the lines there. It's
:21:17. > :21:18.huge test now for Heather Watson. -- it is a huge test now for Heather
:21:19. > :22:08.Watson. Both bringing their best when their
:22:09. > :22:13.backs are up against the wall. It is good to see that she does not back
:22:14. > :22:15.off there. Such a positive strike, fully committing to the back end
:22:16. > :22:42.down the line. Not the worst second serve, but she
:22:43. > :22:49.guessed and again she was brave and again she has break point. You are
:22:50. > :22:59.right, it is just stretching her back to keep it a loose, I guess. --
:23:00. > :23:09.to keep it a bit loose, I guess. Ideal response.
:23:10. > :23:18.Sympathies go out to Heather after the Anna Quebec lasts at Wimbledon,
:23:19. > :23:27.she probably found answers in her mind 's eye, wriggling around at
:23:28. > :23:43.night, can she deliver now? Her third chance, to put this to bed
:23:44. > :23:47.here. She has done it. It was not Heather Watson at her best but she
:23:48. > :23:52.found a way against a very spirited opponent. And, Heather Watson,
:23:53. > :24:01.breaks a run of four successive defeats. Clawing out a win, just
:24:02. > :24:04.over 2.5 hours. It was hard graft, but very well worth it. And she is
:24:05. > :24:20.Thank you to our commentators and congratulations to Heather Watson
:24:21. > :24:25.who goes into the second round of the Olympics, we will find out who
:24:26. > :24:32.she will play in the second round for you later, I went to her press
:24:33. > :24:35.conference few days ago, she was talking about inspiration. An

:24:44. > :24:50.inspired to take part by someone else's Olympic story -- they have
:24:51. > :24:54.surveyed everyone. You can see stories like Rebecca
:24:55. > :25:00.Adlington's, talking about who inspired her over the years, and it
:25:01. > :25:03.gives you an opportunity to find a local sport or club near yourselves,
:25:04. > :25:07.I watched handball earlier, there was a brilliant match between Brazil
:25:08. > :25:12.and Norway. I went on the website to see where
:25:13. > :25:16.my nearest handball centre is. It can inspire the next generation.
:25:17. > :25:20.Perhaps you are watching the games with a young person, who says they
:25:21. > :25:24.want to get involved in that, this will give you the perfect
:25:25. > :25:27.opportunity to do that. Over the next few days, you will see plenty
:25:28. > :25:49.more of those inspirational stories. # What would the world be if we let
:25:50. > :25:56.it be just fine? What would a smile be? Not a tear sometimes. Sister,

:27:54. > :27:59.Thrasher of team USA was the delighted winner. And this will give
:28:00. > :28:04.you an idea of what is going to happen over the next few hours on
:28:05. > :28:08.BBC Four. We have plenty to inspire you, we are talking about Get
:28:09. > :28:10.Inspired over the next few hours, as the sun fades on Copacabana Beach,

:28:19. > :28:22.lightweight and heavyweight, Joe Cordina going in the lightweight,
:28:23. > :28:26.and Laurence Sarkodie going on later.
:28:27. > :28:35.On the beach, we can have a good wonder, let's say hello to our
:28:36. > :28:39.Copacabana crowd! Good afternoon, everybody! We are going to have to
:28:40. > :28:46.work on it! CHEERING There we go, let's go to the beach.
:28:47. > :28:51.Copacabana beach is busy through the day. We are talking about boxing,
:28:52. > :28:55.these two are loosening up, I don't they are taking part in the
:28:56. > :29:03.Olympics, get involved... Not with me, each other! Ready,
:29:04. > :29:18.fight! Where is Adrian and Rocky Balboa? This is lovely! He has eight
:29:19. > :29:26.hatch of the Pacquiaos about him. -- he has a touch. There was a lady
:29:27. > :29:30.about to leave the beach. There are family members everywhere, this is
:29:31. > :29:35.lovely! I hope they aren't taking him into the sea... They are having
:29:36. > :29:38.fun, playing a bit of football. Wherever you are on the beach, there

:29:53. > :29:58.you've got, Sun! One more? Go on! With this foot? That one? Staring at
:29:59. > :30:04.the camera committee lovesick crowd, let's give

:30:25. > :30:30.salute to the crowd as well. They are from Argentina as well! Thank
:30:31. > :30:37.you very much. He's had his moment, he is saluting the crowd.
:30:38. > :30:49.There is a young lady over there and her son takes place in the sailing
:30:50. > :30:53.on Tuesday, they are Argentinian. We will keep you up-to-date with
:30:54. > :30:58.absolutely everything from our base here at BBC Four. We are here for 16
:30:59. > :31:04.days but now we will go to some more live sport. It will be the archery
:31:05. > :31:14.and the live men's semifinal, but first he is all you need to know
:31:15. > :31:19.about it. Archery appeared on a few occasions in the early 20th century
:31:20. > :31:24.before becoming a regular Olympic event in the Munich games in 1972.
:31:25. > :31:28.In the Olympic Games archers use a recurve bow with the arrows being
:31:29. > :31:34.projected at speeds of around 140 miles an hour, or 225 kilometres an
:31:35. > :31:39.hour. During competition archers must stand 70 metres from the target
:31:40. > :31:43.which is 1.22 metres in diameter with ten rings of values between one
:31:44. > :32:04.and ten points. The ten point really is closest to
:32:05. > :32:08.the centre centre and has a diameter of 12.2 centimetres. There are four
:32:09. > :32:10.archery events at the Olympic Games, individual and team competitions for
:32:11. > :32:12.both men and women. Competition is split into two phases, first of its
:32:13. > :32:14.biggest 70 metre ranking which determines your ranking at the
:32:15. > :32:16.Olympic round which is a head-to-head knockout competition.
:32:17. > :32:18.For the individual competition archers compete over five sets of
:32:19. > :32:21.three arrows with 30 seconds to shoot the Jarrow. The person with
:32:22. > :32:23.the highest score at the end of each set receives two points and scores
:32:24. > :32:26.are tied archers receive a point each. The first person to reach six
:32:27. > :32:28.point is the winner. In the team competition there are three members
:32:29. > :32:33.of each team who compete over four sets. With six arrows per set, two
:32:34. > :32:38.per team member. They have two minutes to shoot all six arrows. The
:32:39. > :32:43.first team to reach five points wins and progresses to the next stage in
:32:44. > :32:48.their quest for Olympic medal places.
:32:49. > :32:54.That tells you everything you need to know. What a venue! It is in the
:32:55. > :32:59.Maracana our area of the games, normally the area where there is a
:33:00. > :33:03.raucous Rio Carnival. That brings people crowding into the Stadium in
:33:04. > :33:11.February. It is more sedate today but no less dramatic. The marathon
:33:12. > :33:19.will finish there. It is a spectacular venue. We will join the
:33:20. > :33:23.race will the gold semifinal stage. China beat the reigning champions
:33:24. > :33:28.Italy in the quarterfinals, a bit of a shock. They take on the United
:33:29. > :33:41.States so we will join our commentary team.
:33:42. > :33:49.This is China against the USA. You as a the highest ranked team so they
:33:50. > :33:54.will probably elect to shoot first. The matches are the best of four
:33:55. > :34:01.sets with teams shooting to arrows each. There are no points for a loss
:34:02. > :34:06.and the winner is the first team to reach five points and teams have
:34:07. > :34:10.five -- two minutes to complete each end. The USA will shoot three arrows
:34:11. > :34:18.here and China will shoot three. The USA will finish their six for the
:34:19. > :34:39.first set and then it will be China. It is a good start from Kaminski.
:34:40. > :34:51.The Americans shot beautifully in the quarterfinal with Brady Ellison
:34:52. > :34:59.particularly impressive. 29 is a great start. China have only ever
:35:00. > :35:11.beat the Americans once in a team competition which came in 2010.
:35:12. > :35:33.Their last meeting came at the World Cup in Poland in 2015. They lost 5-4
:35:34. > :35:44.in the semifinal. The great start. Wang Dapeng very assured in the
:35:45. > :35:46.semifinal. Xing Yu opens with an eight so it is advantage the USA.
:35:47. > :36:04.They lead by four. Eight or better will give the USA
:36:05. > :36:44.the first set. That is nine. 57 points and the USA
:36:45. > :36:52.are uncatchable. These are still important arrows for China, just to
:36:53. > :36:54.get the feeling back. Interesting that all four of the arrows so far
:36:55. > :37:20.have gone left of centre from China. Maybe they have not quite adjusted
:37:21. > :37:25.to the wind blowing here. There was only a slight breeze. You can see
:37:26. > :37:32.the flags in the background. Plus ten for China in the semifinal, but
:37:33. > :37:40.the first set has gone and the USA lead by two set points to nil,
:37:41. > :37:52.having taken the opener 57/ 53. -- 57-53.
:37:53. > :38:00.Those two opening arrows from Wang Dapeng and a Gu Xuesong allowed the
:38:01. > :38:07.Americans to relax with a Kaminski getting a ten under nine, all of the
:38:08. > :38:10.archers from America getting a ten under nine. Desperate to go one
:38:11. > :38:15.better than four years ago when the USA won silver behind Italy. -- 810
:38:16. > :38:36.and a nine. Ellison has won one World
:38:37. > :38:43.Championships in the teams event. 57-53, two set points to zero for
:38:44. > :38:47.the United States of America. Ellison would love to get an Olympic
:38:48. > :38:51.gold medal. He has been one of the world's leading archers for several
:38:52. > :38:53.years now and it cannot be easy against, particularly Korea, who
:38:54. > :39:05.have really set the standard for many years in the sport but he
:39:06. > :39:17.fights Harold. He has been a fantastic archer for many years.
:39:18. > :39:24.That is nine at the start of the second set. The sun is just getting
:39:25. > :39:27.lower behind that stand to the right hand side and the shadows are
:39:28. > :39:52.starting to go across the Sambodromo.
:39:53. > :40:01.Ten from Gu Xuesong. You can see the pressure in the bow on his left arm
:40:02. > :40:10.when it is out straight. 28, very decent from the first three arrows.
:40:11. > :40:16.Can Kaminski start the reply well? You bet he can. Ten, excellent. He
:40:17. > :40:22.just looked like he was losing it for a second there with that arrow
:40:23. > :40:32.at the moment the clicker went in it was an absolute gem.
:40:33. > :40:47.What a start to the second set by the USA.
:40:48. > :40:56.Nine. They have a 1-point lead. After the first three arrows of the
:40:57. > :41:25.second set. Ten. The first ten of the semifinal
:41:26. > :41:47.for Xing Yu. He is from Beijing. Ten. The great response from China.
:41:48. > :41:59.A slider, so 56. How critical is that going to be?
:42:00. > :42:11.Three goals will be enough for at least the draw. I have a feeling
:42:12. > :42:14.that eight from Gu Xuesong might just come back to haunt them, we
:42:15. > :42:29.shall see. It continues, that ten is important
:42:30. > :42:33.because it allows Brady Ellison to find gold to win this set. It just
:42:34. > :42:39.makes the target a little bit bigger for him.
:42:40. > :42:48.It doesn't need to be bigger, because he has found the middle of
:42:49. > :42:52.it. Brady and the USA go into a four set points to zero lead against
:42:53. > :42:58.China. They are on the verge of the gold-medal match. They need to
:42:59. > :43:06.maintain their concentration, to get over that line. They have taken the
:43:07. > :43:11.second set 58-56. The scores are provisional and we will wait for
:43:12. > :43:14.them to be confirmed. China are in the last chance saloon. They can
:43:15. > :43:18.afford no more mistakes. They need to win set three and four and even
:43:19. > :43:24.then it will only be good enough to take us to a shoot out. The small
:43:25. > :43:30.margins were highlighted in that set. Touched on that last arrow
:43:31. > :43:35.which was an eight. It ended up proving the difference in that set,
:43:36. > :43:39.for the Americans to win it. If Gu Xuesong and got in the tens and they
:43:40. > :43:42.would have shared a point. Even if he had got it in the nine it would
:43:43. > :43:53.have put more pressure on and that is the thing. Small errors, tiny
:43:54. > :43:59.errors can have a big impact on schools. Confirmation of the 58-56
:44:00. > :44:06.and the USA lead. China should first in this next set. -- shoot first in
:44:07. > :45:03.this next set. Gu Xuesong does his best to keep
:45:04. > :45:15.China trains on -- China's train on track.
:45:16. > :45:22.you very much. He's had his moment, he is saluting the crowd.
:45:23. > :45:37.That is three ten is down. This gentleman here... Could get three
:45:38. > :45:42.out of four. A passing helicopter could put him off his stride. They
:45:43. > :45:48.are still comfortably in control of this set. If they find the centre of
:45:49. > :45:59.the target they could have a lead of three. Brady Ellison just drop slow
:46:00. > :46:05.but they still have the advantage. The USA. But it is just by one
:46:06. > :46:12.point. The first arrow outside of the gold from the USA comes from the
:46:13. > :46:26.experienced Brady Ellison. That's slight opening has to be
:46:27. > :46:48.taken here by China. Nine. Not exactly capitalising. Gu
:46:49. > :46:53.Xuesong again. They need that age to be upgraded to a nine, but right on
:46:54. > :47:00.the money, the exact same spot as the last arrow.
:47:01. > :47:08.-- eight. 53. Even if it is 54... You feel it probably will not be
:47:09. > :47:32.enough. He loved it! Fist pumping before it even left the bow. Jake
:47:33. > :47:37.Kaminski. A long hold, nine. Well, a nine would take the eight star out
:47:38. > :47:44.of the equation, anything in the gold should be enough to see the USA
:47:45. > :47:52.through. It is a nine, that should be that. We await confirmation for a
:47:53. > :47:58.target judge, but from the reaction of the USA team, we know that they
:47:59. > :48:01.are through to the gold medal match for the second consecutive Olympic
:48:02. > :48:08.Games. This time, rather than Italy, they face South Korea. Handshakes
:48:09. > :48:22.all around, we await the final score. Provisionally, 55-53.
:48:23. > :48:27.Although it might be 55-54. Alison, Zach Garrett and Jake Kaminski will
:48:28. > :48:35.be back to contest the gold -- Brady Ellison. The USA were too good, they
:48:36. > :48:40.put that marker down early, 57-53, all three of their archers getting
:48:41. > :48:45.tense. That one from Jake Kaminski, second in the set, right on the
:48:46. > :48:50.money. He got four out of six and he was the one who ended up stepping up
:48:51. > :48:55.in the semifinal, encouraging signs and the USA, as we see the confirmed
:48:56. > :49:02.final scores. Encouraging signs, all three have been in good form so far.
:49:03. > :49:08.The eighth zero upgraded, the final score in the third set is 55-53, the
:49:09. > :49:15.USA through to the gold medal match. Six set points to zero.
:49:16. > :49:23.Welcome back to the Copacabana beach side studio on BBC Four. It is
:49:24. > :49:31.4:50pm in Rio de Janeiro, 8:50pm at home, we will bring you the final of
:49:32. > :49:33.the USA taking on South Korea in the archery.
:49:34. > :49:37.Now, we talked a lot about judo, there's been disappointment for Team
:49:38. > :49:41.GB which we will tell you about, but it's always important on day one of
:49:42. > :49:45.the major championships like this, a lot of people... I've been in this
:49:46. > :49:49.position, you watch an Olympic sport for the first time every four years,
:49:50. > :49:51.you need a quick reminder of the rules, we will tell you now about
:49:52. > :49:54.the judo. Hopefully it will tell you the
:49:55. > :50:02.difference between all of the moves...
:50:03. > :50:11.Judo was developed in the late 19th century in Japan, and has been an
:50:12. > :50:12.Olympic sport since Tokyo in 1964. Each contest in judo has age oration
:50:13. > :50:28.of five minutes for men, and four for women. They enter a golden score
:50:29. > :50:33.where there is no time limit. The highest scoring technique is a
:50:34. > :50:38.ippon, which instantly wins a contest. It can be achieved in four
:50:39. > :50:42.ways. Throwing an opponent with impact on their back with
:50:43. > :50:45.considerable force and speed, pinning and holding down an opponent
:50:46. > :50:54.for 20 seconds with selected holding techniques, and when an opponent
:50:55. > :50:58.submits, you get two waza-ari. A waza-ari can be achieved in two
:50:59. > :51:02.ways, throwing an opponent but lacking one of the elements of the
:51:03. > :51:11.ippon, or holding down an opponent for 15 seconds or more, that less
:51:12. > :51:19.than 20 seconds. A yuko is worth one point. Judaism a knockout
:51:20. > :51:24.competition, and four competitors are placed in a drawer that is
:51:25. > :51:29.divided in two tables, the top eight athletes in each category are seeded
:51:30. > :51:33.in line with their world rankings, and two athletes will compete for
:51:34. > :51:39.the gold and silver medals. I hope you were paying attention.
:51:40. > :51:45.Ashley McKenzie was a great hope for Team GB. In the 60 kilograms, this
:51:46. > :51:49.was his second round bout against his Catholics Donnie opponent and it
:51:50. > :51:53.did not go the way that Ashley McKenzie was dreaming. He was taking
:51:54. > :52:00.part in his second Olympic Games, and last against the world
:52:01. > :52:04.champions. That was in the second round, he is heartbroken, Ashley
:52:05. > :52:09.McKenzie, if you ever wonder what it is like to go out of the Olympics,
:52:10. > :52:13.this is a picture of Ashley McKenzie, after that bout. Just
:52:14. > :52:18.outside of the arena, breaking down by the side of the bins. Hopefully
:52:19. > :52:22.that will be inspiration to him, he spoke after his defeat to say that
:52:23. > :52:27.he's desperate to come back in four years in Tokyo, and come back and
:52:28. > :52:32.win the gold medal. Hopefully he can recover from that defeat as soon as
:52:33. > :52:38.possible, that meant that Yeldos Smetov went into the semifinal. In
:52:39. > :52:46.the semifinal, he's taking on his Azerbaijan opponent, Orkhan Safarov.
:52:47. > :52:52.Let's go over to our commentary team, Mark Doran and Neal Adams.
:52:53. > :53:03.COMMENTATOR: Has extant in blue, Azerbaijan in the white.
:53:04. > :53:09.Watch out for the counter techniques from Yeldos Smetov, two different
:53:10. > :53:19.types of attack. Dropping write-in for a shoulder throw. -- dropping
:53:20. > :53:29.right in for a shoulder throw. Orkhan Safarov is very cagey with
:53:30. > :53:39.his gripping. When he does get a grip, he goes in for the attack. You
:53:40. > :53:45.have two grip up. A lot of respect out there, and it really is the best
:53:46. > :53:49.thing to have that kind of respect for your opponent, you know that
:53:50. > :53:55.they are going to go into the air otherwise. It's a penalty each. Of
:53:56. > :54:02.course, we've seen it where people have gone all the way up, then ready
:54:03. > :54:10.for disqualification, they have not been able to grip up, that was the
:54:11. > :54:14.idea of the bigger jackets. That is why they are catching the sleeves
:54:15. > :54:21.such a lot. Both of them are on the sleeves. Orkhan Safarov tries the
:54:22. > :54:38.attack. Controlled aggression, that is what
:54:39. > :54:41.this sport is about. Maximum efficiency, and minimum effort. It
:54:42. > :54:45.is hard to use minimum effort when you have someone coming at you on
:54:46. > :54:51.the other side of the matter like these two. Yes, but the nice thing
:54:52. > :54:55.about it is the twist of the hips, and a change of body movement. You
:54:56. > :55:03.can turn it against your opponent and that is what we see now. Is he
:55:04. > :55:07.going to go there? Yeldos Smetov tries to get onto his arm, Orkhan
:55:08. > :55:20.Safarov, not renowned for his ground work, momentarily is in trouble, a
:55:21. > :55:26.bit of panic. Three minutes remaining in this semifinal now. The
:55:27. > :55:30.right hand, gaining a grip. It does not mean anything unless his left
:55:31. > :55:40.hand can convert as well. Struggling to do that. Getting involved soon
:55:41. > :55:45.enough. It is right against left, fighting for the sleeve, one of the
:55:46. > :55:49.problems is right against left, when you fully commit yourself, if there
:55:50. > :55:58.is a slight body movement, they can turn your whole movement against
:55:59. > :56:01.you. It is what we call a counter movement, and it can be very
:56:02. > :56:11.dangerous, it is normally against opposite. Smetov goes up high with
:56:12. > :56:21.his left hand. Cannot get the right moving. Smetov is not really
:56:22. > :56:27.initiating anything, he is waiting. Trying to get Safarov to make a
:56:28. > :56:35.mistake. Three minutes gone, two to go. It is an intriguing contest. It
:56:36. > :56:44.is cat and mouse, this one. A bit of tactics, they can feel the danger
:56:45. > :56:49.from each other. Most times the game is played, the mouse can get the cat
:56:50. > :56:54.here, very quickly. It changes within a split second. It can really
:56:55. > :56:59.go away from you, you think you are in control, then it goes away from
:57:00. > :57:06.you. Two penalties against both of these penalties, that does not cause
:57:07. > :57:11.a concern, it means of nothing else happens, there's a long way to go,
:57:12. > :57:15.we are into the golden score territory. The coaches respectfully
:57:16. > :57:21.watching on. They cannot shout while they are actually fighting. They
:57:22. > :57:24.can, they are not allowed to but it does not always stop them! If they
:57:25. > :57:33.want to watch from the stands, they can! They will both be desperate to
:57:34. > :57:37.have a time-out. There's a moment where the coaches would love to get
:57:38. > :57:40.in the year... That's the thing about I was bored, it is five
:57:41. > :57:48.minutes of actual fighting and you had to go and attack -- that's the
:57:49. > :57:52.thing about this sport. You can get penalised, it's easy to
:57:53. > :57:55.go away, it is constant and has to be a proper attack and brake
:57:56. > :57:59.balance. It is constant. That is what makes
:58:00. > :58:06.it such a hard and physical contact sport. Beginning to sense that
:58:07. > :58:11.something could happen now, as the clock ticks towards 40 seconds, this
:58:12. > :58:19.is the semifinal, and the winner will fight for a possible gold.
:58:20. > :58:26.Silver at worst, the loser, for a bronze.
:58:27. > :58:31.Starting to open up, that is going to be a score, that started
:58:32. > :58:35.standing, that stood. I would be surprised if the referee or video
:58:36. > :58:43.referee does not go into that. Because he took him backwards there,
:58:44. > :58:47.Smetov, and he gets the score. Safarov looks to the referee, no
:58:48. > :58:53.point in doing that, look at the clock and realise you have two fire
:58:54. > :58:57.up, young man. It was absolute, he did it, 14 seconds left, and he
:58:58. > :59:01.changed the direction of the technique. It does not matter that
:59:02. > :59:06.he was only a couple of centimetres off the ground. Even then, it meant
:59:07. > :59:17.he had the score. He is two minutes away from the final. Seven seconds
:59:18. > :59:22.remaining. Smetov, in blue, has the lead. He cannot run away... He goes
:59:23. > :59:28.to the ground. It might be a penalty against him. Not a concern and less
:59:29. > :59:35.two more come in quick succession. One Moore, three seconds... Too
:59:36. > :59:40.quick, very quick, why wouldn't she be keen to go separate, can he do
:59:41. > :59:53.something here? He can't. The gone goes, and you see
:59:54. > :59:57.the joy. Smetov of Kazakhstan is in the gold-medal match of Rio 2016, a
:59:58. > :00:04.shake of the head Ron Safarov, so close. It's not to be. -- from a
:00:05. > :00:09.Safarov. We will bring you the final of that
:00:10. > :00:14.later on BBC Four. If you've just put on the television, hello, this
:00:15. > :00:20.is the studio on Copacabana Beach. We will be here from day one over
:00:21. > :00:24.the next 16 days of the Rio 2016 Olympics. Smetov of Kazakhstan goes
:00:25. > :00:29.into the gold-medal match, we will be back in that arena at the Olympic
:00:30. > :00:35.Park which is a roundabout... 13 miles that way. I know that is basic
:00:36. > :00:39.Brazilian geography, but right about one hour in Rio traffic, at the
:00:40. > :00:42.Olympic Park, loads of sport going on, we will show you that over the
:00:43. > :00:50.next few days, probably the next two weeks.
:00:51. > :00:57.Safarova this is what is coming up in the next few hours on BBC Four.
:00:58. > :01:01.We have the archery on the way with the USA against South Korea in the
:01:02. > :01:04.final. The South Koreans are the four times champions. Italy went out
:01:05. > :01:16.and they were the reigning champions.
:01:17. > :01:29.It is nine o'clock at home, I got my hour was wrong! We have the boxing
:01:30. > :01:36.coming up. It takes a while to adjust your timings. We have
:01:37. > :01:43.football this evening as well. The 200th cap for the USA. They will be
:01:44. > :01:49.taking on France. That is coming up later on BBC Four. If you would like
:01:50. > :01:53.some specific timings, judging what I am saying in the last few months
:01:54. > :01:59.I'm not the best person, but the archery is coming up in the next few
:02:00. > :02:04.minutes. The boxing in about 45 minutes time, and we have women's
:02:05. > :02:10.football at 1015. In terms of what you can watch elsewhere, on BBC One
:02:11. > :02:16.it is the rugby sevens, the second game for the Team GB women who won
:02:17. > :02:21.against Brazil earlier on. That is on BBC One right now. On the Red
:02:22. > :02:24.Button there is plenty going on including women's hockey with
:02:25. > :02:29.Argentina against the USA and it is in the first half and goalless at
:02:30. > :02:33.the moment. If you are a big hockey fan you can watch that on the Red
:02:34. > :02:37.Button at the moment. We saw Heather Watson winning her first match in
:02:38. > :02:41.the tennis earlier on and there is like tennis on the BBC website and
:02:42. > :02:49.you can watch all the sports on the BBC website or the BBC's cap. There
:02:50. > :02:52.is BBC One and BBC Four as well. You can be in control in the next few
:02:53. > :02:56.days over what you watch and when you watch it as well. If you want
:02:57. > :03:01.any highlights, we can bring you those regularly on BBC One and BBC
:03:02. > :03:08.Four and headlines throughout the day as well. I will let you into a
:03:09. > :03:12.secret at in a moment. On BBC Four we have some interesting things to
:03:13. > :03:17.keep you entertained, and one of them is a golden coconut. Can we get
:03:18. > :03:22.a close-up of the Golden coconut. Team GB have not yet won a gold
:03:23. > :03:28.medal but every time they do, with no expense spent here, we have
:03:29. > :03:35.bought a coconut which has cost just over a pound and we have
:03:36. > :03:39.spray-painted it gold. We have a hatstand and we will dangle our
:03:40. > :03:47.golden coconuts on the hatstand every time Team GB win a Gold so we
:03:48. > :03:52.can have a celebration here from the Copacabana crowd. Will everyone
:03:53. > :03:58.celebrate? They are all going wild for the golden coconut. I think that
:03:59. > :04:04.feature will go down incredibly well. Do not panic. As soon as there
:04:05. > :04:10.is a Team GB gold, the golden coconut will be coming out. Thank
:04:11. > :04:15.you, Madam thought that enthusiastic thumbs up. Darren Campbell won
:04:16. > :04:21.medals in previous Olympics and he may not be the man you would expect
:04:22. > :04:24.to follow archery. We wondered whether we should give you an
:04:25. > :04:28.in-depth look at the rules or whether we should just get Darren
:04:29. > :04:37.Campbell to have a go? We did the latter. The pressure was on Rio to
:04:38. > :04:41.find a spectacular venue for the archery. Step forward the
:04:42. > :04:47.Sambodromo. During the Rio Carnival 19,000 people Filby stands for half
:04:48. > :04:53.a mile. Having just walked into the arena, the first thing that really
:04:54. > :04:58.strikes you is the heat. It is so, so hot. The target from the shooting
:04:59. > :05:04.line to the target is 70 metres away. As you stand here you can feel
:05:05. > :05:07.the sun on your back. In this arena that crowd feel so close it feels
:05:08. > :05:11.that you can touch them and you can hear every single breath. You can
:05:12. > :05:18.see Christ the Redeemer just over there. Is it your time? You will
:05:19. > :05:22.have 20 seconds to release your bow. Failure to release the bow will
:05:23. > :05:27.result in a penalty. If you just look over there you can see the
:05:28. > :05:32.sock, it is slightly picking up and you can't wait for it to be still or
:05:33. > :05:36.you will receive a red card. It is not like football, you won't be sent
:05:37. > :05:41.off, but what you will lose by receiving a red card is the highest
:05:42. > :05:48.score from that set. It will hit this target within one second, at
:05:49. > :05:53.140 mph. From the shooting line I couldn't even see the middle target,
:05:54. > :05:58.but now I am to disclose it is about the size of a DVD. The best archers
:05:59. > :06:05.will actually hit this little cross. Ridiculous. It would be wrong to
:06:06. > :06:09.come to such a fantastic venue without giving it a go myself but I
:06:10. > :06:14.will need a bit of coaching and a bit of help from Chris. The event
:06:15. > :06:18.organiser, the main guy. Chris, you were involved in London 2012 and you
:06:19. > :06:26.will be involved in Tokyo. Absolutely. What is this place like?
:06:27. > :06:29.It is amazing, it has never been used to the sport before so it is
:06:30. > :06:33.the first time as a sporting venue said there have been challenges
:06:34. > :06:37.there but it is in the culture and the fire of Brazilians, with the
:06:38. > :06:41.carnival, and we are trying to bring that save Carnival -- same Carnival
:06:42. > :06:48.right here with a party in the OEM picks right here. When you actually
:06:49. > :06:52.draw back, keeping this arm still, it looking straight down creating no
:06:53. > :06:58.movement, so you can see down the target, is hard. It is all about
:06:59. > :07:01.hitting it when you can, it is not depended on muscles, it is about
:07:02. > :07:06.controlling breeding and your mental ability and being able to get the
:07:07. > :07:11.ten when you need to for the gold medals. So, breathing, forget about
:07:12. > :07:18.strength and power. Your brain is your don't fight it, but use it.
:07:19. > :07:24.Point to the target, bring this to your right eye. In the middle.
:07:25. > :07:34.Relax. You have got nine, that's not bad. Nine! Nine!
:07:35. > :07:39.Amazingly he didn't make the Team GB side. He was going from three metres
:07:40. > :07:45.but the big boys go from another 67 and that gives you an idea of how
:07:46. > :07:50.hard it is. Team USA store of China and they are taking over -- they are
:07:51. > :07:53.taking on South Korea in the final of the men's team archery. It is
:07:54. > :08:06.here live on BBC Four. What a start from Korea, ten, ten,
:08:07. > :08:12.ten. The gauntlet is firmly in front of the USA. If that is the start
:08:13. > :08:18.they are looking for, then long may this match continued. What a
:08:19. > :08:25.brilliant start from the Koreans. Just outside from Kaminski. The
:08:26. > :08:29.Americans know that a little minute distance outside of the line is all
:08:30. > :08:37.it could take between gold and silver and they are going to have to
:08:38. > :08:44.perform. Garrett has to reset and it is two minutes per set per team.
:08:45. > :08:52.These athletes are used to the pressure. Garrett just resets and
:08:53. > :08:56.finds the centre of the target and gets a pat on the back from a coach,
:08:57. > :09:05.well-deserved bad indeed. Now, Alison. Ten. That is some response
:09:06. > :09:17.from the USA. They have just dropped one point. Some very good archers.
:09:18. > :09:28.Alison is the world of former number one. Archery of the highest standard
:09:29. > :09:37.here. Well, this is magnificent to watch.
:09:38. > :09:48.It is just like a metronome, isn't it? It is the same thing over and
:09:49. > :09:52.over again. Even with the stop watch on them they would beat from 100 a
:09:53. > :10:03.second from the address to the release every single time. Yes! It
:10:04. > :10:09.is perfection from Korea. The USA, as you can see the women's team in
:10:10. > :10:13.the middle there, celebrating, but these are important arrows for
:10:14. > :10:23.Kaminski, Garrett and Alison. If they lose it 60-59. OK. That just
:10:24. > :10:27.lets them know they are still there. If you are going to have a loose
:10:28. > :10:32.arrow it may as well be when the set has gone. Exactly. We just saw it
:10:33. > :10:59.from Kaminski there. I tell you what, this could be an
:11:00. > :11:02.absolutely cracking men's team archery final. Hats off to career as
:11:03. > :11:08.that is the first perfect set we have seen all day, and they
:11:09. > :11:11.delivered it in the final. An incredible performance with Ellison
:11:12. > :11:15.and Garrett also getting ten in that set. The only one that is struggling
:11:16. > :11:20.to settle at the minute is Jake Kaminski and it is a very
:11:21. > :11:26.interesting set of circumstances we have here for Kaminski in
:11:27. > :11:29.particular. Kaminski was in London and he won a silver there and it is
:11:30. > :11:33.only Zach Garrett that has no Olympics experience but you wouldn't
:11:34. > :11:45.know it from the way he has settled into this final. The standard of
:11:46. > :11:49.archery is so high from these Koreans, all the way through the
:11:50. > :11:53.competition they will be very tough to beat. They have to get a monkey
:11:54. > :11:57.off their back because they have never beaten the USA in an Olympic
:11:58. > :12:01.match. They have always lost in the USA when they come up against them
:12:02. > :12:09.in an Olympic Games, but a confirmation that it is 60-57. 60!
:12:10. > :12:17.That's right, not a single arrow missed. 60-57. Let's see how
:12:18. > :12:22.Kaminski goes here, he is the one with the pressure on him here.
:12:23. > :12:27.Blemish free from all the other five archers in set number one. Very
:12:28. > :12:54.close, wasn't he. He has a long hold, doesn't he?
:12:55. > :13:05.Garrett. They need a ten from Brady here. Given what's come before.
:13:06. > :13:16.Oh, they are not far out, are they? But when you are up against a side
:13:17. > :13:19.that is shooting like Korea... Five millimetres more towards the target
:13:20. > :13:23.then they would have had three towns, that is how close the
:13:24. > :13:28.Americans were there to get intense, so very, very close. But, the
:13:29. > :13:40.difference in the scoreboard could be massive.
:13:41. > :13:56.No hanging around from Ku Bon-chan. That is impressive, it is so
:13:57. > :13:58.impressive. Lee Seung-yun, this guy has nerves of steel. He is so
:13:59. > :14:13.steady. Wow. I think that is nine. It is
:14:14. > :14:17.just nine. There is one point in it. 28-27. Isn't it funny how we have
:14:18. > :14:27.just seen the standards drop a tiny smidgen of a bit now. That is down
:14:28. > :14:33.as a 27, it is an eight start for Lee Seung-yun. A ten for Kaminski,
:14:34. > :14:43.that is his first of the match. Kaminski joins the party.
:14:44. > :14:59.The customary long hold from Garrett, ten. Oh, yes. Well, Ellison
:15:00. > :15:11.needs a ten here as well. He has got it. Brilliant stuff. 57.
:15:12. > :15:27.Well, what it does do is it puts pressure on Korea. They haven't had
:15:28. > :15:31.it yet in this gold-medal match. Kim Woo-jin with a ten. Ku Bon-chan yet
:15:32. > :15:44.to miss the centre of the target. He continues to just hire all the
:15:45. > :15:51.way down the middle. What a performance from Ku Bon-chan so far.
:15:52. > :16:05.Born to be in an Olympic final, Ku Bon-chan, so far... We go with that
:16:06. > :16:11.eighth star, that will be a nine. This is phenomenal archery from
:16:12. > :16:17.South Korea. I will go back to what I was talking about earlier, the
:16:18. > :16:23.last bit of the first set, 1996, at the Atlanta games, the USA one two
:16:24. > :16:27.49. In Atlanta, that was to win gold,
:16:28. > :16:34.and in London, the Americans beat South Korea 241, two 19.
:16:35. > :16:40.This will be a first win. Going back to the highlights, you saw the three
:16:41. > :16:45.nines, all very close to the perimeter. Just one of those had
:16:46. > :16:51.snuck in, and we would have had a tide set, we just had the arrow
:16:52. > :17:03.upgraded, and South Korea have the second set. This has been upgraded
:17:04. > :17:09.to a nine, so South Korea move in with a four set point to zero point
:17:10. > :17:16.lead against the USA, the USA now need to win the next two sets,
:17:17. > :17:26.confirmation... 58-57, it is 4- 02 career. -- it is 4-0, to South
:17:27. > :17:29.Korea. The USA put those first three hours
:17:30. > :17:39.behind them quickly here, they need to repeat their confidence.
:17:40. > :17:48.Jake Kaminski got a ten. With his second arrow of the second set, he
:17:49. > :18:09.has found his range now. All smiles, nice and relaxed. Nine. It's hard to
:18:10. > :18:21.believe, anything in the nine zone is going to be a problem for you,
:18:22. > :18:34.that's how high the standard is. So, 29, that is near perfection. Kim
:18:35. > :18:42.Woo-jin... Of South Korea, in the driving seat of this men's
:18:43. > :18:46.gold-medal match. Well, they've had 13 arrows in this final, South
:18:47. > :18:58.Korea, and they've only failed to score ten on two occasions. 11 tens.
:18:59. > :19:02.This man has not missed. That is five consecutive tens for Ku
:19:03. > :19:14.Bon-chan. Even if you go into the old style of scoring... South Korea
:19:15. > :19:22.would be absolutely romping this. Talk about bringing your a game, Ku
:19:23. > :19:29.Bon-chan. Three times only they'd missed the ten zone. 15 arrows,
:19:30. > :19:36.1210s. The USA would be four points behind in the old scoring system. It
:19:37. > :19:41.shows how well they are shooting, Jake Kaminski, his first three
:19:42. > :19:57.arrows were off target but his next three, he went nine, eight, nine,
:19:58. > :20:04.now he has gone ten, ten, ten. Nine. Garrett will be disappointed, no
:20:05. > :20:15.tens in this set for him. It means that Brady Ellison has two step up
:20:16. > :20:19.here. It is an eight. That, I think, could open the door, and he cannot
:20:20. > :20:33.believe it. Apologies to his team-mates. That means that South
:20:34. > :20:38.Korea needs 27 for the gold. 17 for the gold, and the man about to shoot
:20:39. > :20:45.has not missed you centre of the target in this gold-medal match just
:20:46. > :20:56.yet. -- the centre. He's got another! Six out of six for
:20:57. > :21:04.Ku Bon-chan. Seven required for the gold medal, for South Korea...
:21:05. > :21:16.Ten! Ten! Ten! It is a gold medal for
:21:17. > :21:20.career. What an outstanding final. Archery, at the highest quality --
:21:21. > :21:25.for South Korea. Simply incredible stuff. Just three
:21:26. > :21:30.arrows in the entire match outside of the ten zone. That is brilliant
:21:31. > :21:38.from South Korea, the utmost respect from Ellison to Kim Woo-jin. And the
:21:39. > :21:43.women's team celebrate in their white hats, in the middle of the
:21:44. > :21:48.screen. It was brilliant, the Americans tried as hard as they
:21:49. > :21:53.could but South Korea set their stall out early with 60 out of 60 in
:21:54. > :21:58.the first set, and Kim Woo-jin, who did not have any Olympic titles
:21:59. > :22:04.before today, now has one, he will be back in the individual to try and
:22:05. > :22:08.add the individual title to his two world titles.
:22:09. > :22:15.A brilliant performance from the men in white. They are the worthy
:22:16. > :22:26.winners of this gold-medal, winning 6-0 set points, and it has been
:22:27. > :22:32.brilliant to watch. A 20th medal in all disciplines for South Korea, and
:22:33. > :22:44.they have not dropped a set Indian tyre competition. -- in the entire
:22:45. > :22:48.competition. Worthy winners. A phenomenal sport, that will go down
:22:49. > :22:53.as some of the best sport you seen at the Olympic Games here in Rio. A
:22:54. > :22:57.phenomenal performance, our jaws were on the ground through the
:22:58. > :23:00.quarterfinals, the semifinals, then they went to another level.
:23:01. > :23:09.Outstanding performance from these three. Then, you have to take into
:23:10. > :23:13.account that none of them, none of them have been to an Olympic Games
:23:14. > :23:19.before. It's an incredible statistic. There is going to be some
:23:20. > :23:22.fantastic match-ups, perhaps, with these team-mates turning rivals in
:23:23. > :23:29.the individual? Those are mouthwatering potential clashes, but
:23:30. > :23:33.Ku Bon-chan, absolutely as you would expect, soaking up a wonderful
:23:34. > :23:41.moment in his archery career. Six out of six in the ten zone. Getting
:23:42. > :23:52.the field of play ready for the medal ceremony. We will bring you
:23:53. > :23:56.that. As the sun sets, it is congratulations all around. It worse
:23:57. > :24:08.fantastic archery, no other word for it, they were simply sensational.
:24:09. > :24:10.DAN: USA could not compete, five-time Olympic champions now,
:24:11. > :24:17.South Korea. Welcome to BBC Four, we are here on
:24:18. > :24:23.Copacabana beach. It is 5:24pm, in Rio de Janeiro, the sun is setting,
:24:24. > :24:30.it's a glorious place to be. We are privileged to be here, we will go
:24:31. > :24:36.onto the sand later, we are here 2am. It is currently 9:24pm, you
:24:37. > :24:40.know that, but this four hour time difference is difficult for me to
:24:41. > :24:44.get my head around! We are here for the next 16 days, it is day one
:24:45. > :24:48.here, full coverage on BBC One, let's bring you up-to-date with some
:24:49. > :24:56.of the headlines from the first day of the Rio Olympics 2016. Brilliant
:24:57. > :25:00.from Adam Peaty earlier, securing his place in the 100 meter
:25:01. > :25:04.breaststroke semifinal, a world record in the heats. Semifinals for
:25:05. > :25:09.him later, Ross Murdoch is also true. It was the road race which
:25:10. > :25:12.started just behind us here on Copacabana earlier, Geraint Thomas
:25:13. > :25:17.crashed out, Chris Froome was fading. Greg fan arm and was the man
:25:18. > :25:23.who backed the gold for Belgium in the road race today. That was not
:25:24. > :25:29.the first gold medal of the games, the honour for that went in the ten
:25:30. > :25:32.metre air rifle final for the women, 19-year-old Jenny Thrasher of teen
:25:33. > :25:40.USA was the winner there. Congratulations to her. This is how
:25:41. > :25:44.the timetable looks on BBC Four, as we show you another beautiful shot
:25:45. > :25:48.of Rio de Janeiro, the men's 60 kilograms final of the judo is
:25:49. > :25:54.coming up, Ashley McKenzie went out in the second round. We have British
:25:55. > :25:58.action in the boxing, Joe Cordina coming up in the light weight, and
:25:59. > :26:09.in the heavyweight division, we have Lauren Sarkodie at 10pm. Hope Solo
:26:10. > :26:15.won heard 200th for the USA -- has one heard 200th cap.
:26:16. > :26:21.Rugby sevens on BBC One, but in terms of what else you can see on
:26:22. > :26:28.the BBC at the moment, at the moment we have fencing at Olympic Park, you
:26:29. > :26:33.can watch that right now, if you are into that. And on the website, 20
:26:34. > :26:38.minutes walk on the other end of the Copacabana, the beach volleyball,
:26:39. > :26:45.that is on most nights, it is packed in the evening. If you quieten down,
:26:46. > :26:50.you can almost hear the roar when the Brazil team are playing. The
:26:51. > :26:54.Brazilian pair saw off Canada earlier on. Thank you for your texts
:26:55. > :27:00.and tweets, the hashtags throughout the entire two weeks is BBC Rio
:27:01. > :27:07.2016. Earlier on, there's a lot of chatter about the fact that I was
:27:08. > :27:17.wearing trousers, I might break out the shorts later on. Jeanette said,
:27:18. > :27:24.can I put my burrow down? Steph said that she loves the short of scantily
:27:25. > :27:29.clad humans in the background, we can't help but show you those, it is
:27:30. > :27:32.a beach, not that we can't help ourselves!
:27:33. > :27:42.Liam says, we saw Adam Peaty break the world record, he is saying that
:27:43. > :27:47.they both swam in the same swimming club, ten years apart, Liam, you are
:27:48. > :27:54.clutching at straws! That was in Uttoxeter, that's like saying my mum
:27:55. > :28:02.'s best friend has a milkman who once saw David Beckham.
:28:03. > :28:06.But keep those coming in! Fi says shorts, no shoes, Panama hat,
:28:07. > :28:09.shades, that will be the outfit sorted! I don't think we will go
:28:10. > :28:14.down that road, but we are here or the next 16 days, plenty of outfits
:28:15. > :28:19.on display. On BBC Four, we are at the cabana
:28:20. > :28:24.beach here until 2am UK time. If you switch on BBC Four earlier in
:28:25. > :28:29.the day, Ore Oduba is down at the Olympic village.
:28:30. > :28:33.He has been out and about in the athletes village, that's not at the
:28:34. > :28:39.Olympic Village, that is at Baja, if you go down the avenue from our base
:28:40. > :28:44.here, about one hour 's drive here, it takes you to Baja, there are a
:28:45. > :28:48.lot of venues there and where the athletes Olympic Village is. Before
:28:49. > :28:53.the game started, Ore Oduba had a nose around to see how the life of
:28:54. > :28:58.an Olympian goes about. Here we are, at the athletes village
:28:59. > :29:03.for around 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries around the world,
:29:04. > :29:08.this is their first step to winning an Olympic gold, not least for our
:29:09. > :29:23.friends... At Team GB Towers! Lets see how they are getting on?
:29:24. > :29:30.SAMBA MUSIC PLAYS.. The rugby sevens girls are in the house, and they
:29:31. > :29:35.seem in good spirits, why wouldn't they be? They have union Jack
:29:36. > :29:38.deckchairs here! Mark, I love what you've done with the place. The
:29:39. > :29:42.great thing about the Olympic Village is that you pretty much get
:29:43. > :29:48.the bare space and it is your allotment to do what you like with.
:29:49. > :29:56.Who let Mark Gleghorne in, give us a wave? Haven't you got work to do?
:29:57. > :30:00.Brilliant! We will see you in a bit! Spirits here seem really good. It is
:30:01. > :30:07.a great buzz, everyone is excited and pleased to be here. Max and
:30:08. > :30:12.Nile, welcome to Rio, how you find it? It's great, the place is
:30:13. > :30:15.amazing, we will get started soon, we are looking forward to it. Good
:30:16. > :30:26.to see you, take care! What is great about the villagers if
:30:27. > :30:30.you ever get lost, just follow the flags. There is Canada looking loud
:30:31. > :30:34.and proud and sticking up that our black. Over here we have the
:30:35. > :30:40.Scandinavian quarter, including Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Sweden
:30:41. > :30:44.were very welcoming as we walked past. Here we have Portugal down low
:30:45. > :30:52.and Slovenia up top, feeling the love. Very good.
:30:53. > :31:04.That is what it is all about, bring on the great. Oh that is good on the
:31:05. > :31:08.bottom. That is lovely. I am sure you are hoping that this
:31:09. > :31:12.is a spot that will get used quite heavily by the GB contingent. Yes,
:31:13. > :31:18.we have set it up with 12 or 15 beds and we will have a lot of treatment
:31:19. > :31:23.during the day as we get into the games and all the sports are
:31:24. > :31:29.encouraged to use it. This way. There is a person in here! There is
:31:30. > :31:35.a person hiding! You never know who you will find. You never know.
:31:36. > :31:39.Hello! OK, there they are. It is good to see you. Good to see you.
:31:40. > :31:44.Richard, had to ask about these guys, this is your team. Your
:31:45. > :31:49.Olympics 2016 team, it is a tight group that you have here. It is
:31:50. > :31:52.great, we train together and complete together -- compete
:31:53. > :31:56.together. We have been doing it for years and this is our sixth trip out
:31:57. > :32:00.here now as an Olympic squad so we have been bonded very well and so
:32:01. > :32:08.far we haven't had any major issues. All right, here we are. Do you mind
:32:09. > :32:17.if I... Be my guest, it has just been changed today so it is nice and
:32:18. > :32:21.clean. Now it is tainted. If it is anything like London, you will see a
:32:22. > :32:24.lot of athletes flying home with these. Team GB will be taking their
:32:25. > :32:31.bed sheets home with them, we shall see, we shall see. There you have
:32:32. > :32:34.it, the village in all its glory and by the sound of it, according to the
:32:35. > :32:43.athletes, Team GB is definitely ready for Rio. Thank you for that.
:32:44. > :32:47.Welcome back to Copacabana Beach. I will enjoy saying that in the next
:32:48. > :32:51.few weeks. Have a look at this, kids playing in the sea and huge waves
:32:52. > :32:55.breaking behind us. Let me show you where we are. The studio is just
:32:56. > :33:01.behind us and if we go this way it is down towards Ipanema beach. You
:33:02. > :33:05.might remember that two years ago, our World Cup BBC studio was about
:33:06. > :33:09.200 yards away from here. That is the thought of Copacabana which used
:33:10. > :33:14.to be a military base and is now a place you can get nice ice creams.
:33:15. > :33:20.The big blue building of my right shoulder there is the BBC studio and
:33:21. > :33:24.our American friends, NBC are also in there and we will go there in the
:33:25. > :33:27.next two weeks and we will have a really good look around. There are
:33:28. > :33:30.always football pitches and we have kids playing throughout the day and
:33:31. > :33:34.Copacabana Beach on the weekend is always packed and further down, a 20
:33:35. > :33:39.minute walk from us, you might get to pick it out, add Beach Volleyball
:33:40. > :33:55.Arena. They pack thousands in there every single night and there was
:33:56. > :34:02.life on the sun is setting on Copacabana. It is going to be a
:34:03. > :34:06.beautiful setting and there have been complaints about what will
:34:07. > :34:09.happen here with the quality of water and logistics and security but
:34:10. > :34:13.we can guarantee you that these games will look like no other, it is
:34:14. > :34:17.a very beautiful setting the sum of the world's greatest athletes to
:34:18. > :34:20.compete in some of those great disciplines. People have been asking
:34:21. > :34:24.throughout the day what is the military vessel out to say? It is
:34:25. > :34:28.always there, it is a security measure to make sure that everyone
:34:29. > :34:30.is safe on Copacabana Beach and it is there throughout the day and it
:34:31. > :34:35.was there during the World Cup and it has been there every day since we
:34:36. > :34:39.have been in Rio. Talking about the great Olympians, we will bring you a
:34:40. > :34:43.gold medal match now in the judo. Early on we were hoping that Team
:34:44. > :34:47.GB's Ashley McKenzie could be involved in this match in the 60
:34:48. > :34:51.kilograms category and sadly he went out in the second round. It was a
:34:52. > :34:57.really tough draw for him because he took on the world champion Yeldov
:34:58. > :35:08.Smetov who then won his semifinal and now he is into the gold-medal
:35:09. > :35:12.match. He is taking on Beslan Mudranov of Russia and so we will
:35:13. > :35:19.now find out who can win the gold in this men's judo 60 kilograms final.
:35:20. > :35:30.This is a gold-medal time you can see two men giving nothing away. One
:35:31. > :35:35.standing in front of the other, in blue, Yeldov Smetov doesn't want eye
:35:36. > :35:41.contact with this man, Beslan Mudranov of Russia. He came from
:35:42. > :35:46.nowhere and he was way back in calculations to be in this bout come
:35:47. > :35:49.the start of the day but he is there now and Yeldov Smetov stands between
:35:50. > :35:55.the Russian and a gold-medal. That is how he has done it, in being very
:35:56. > :35:59.strong throughout, Yeldov Smetov is the current world champion and he
:36:00. > :36:03.has the pedigree. I will be very surprised if this goes the full-time
:36:04. > :36:06.because these two are on the form of their lives, they are both big
:36:07. > :36:18.throwers and they will both go for the ippon. I think that the Russian,
:36:19. > :36:21.Beslan Mudranov, is looking absolutely superb and Yeldov Smetov,
:36:22. > :36:26.the world champion, what a thing for him to put that Olympic title
:36:27. > :36:29.alongside at world title. I think the sure we are going to see some
:36:30. > :36:31.massive techniques and I think they are going to come from different
:36:32. > :36:47.angles. We are ready to go and to go for
:36:48. > :36:56.gold. Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation here. Yeldov Smetov in
:36:57. > :37:01.the blue for Kazakhstan and Beslan Mudranov in the white. He won a
:37:02. > :37:04.silver medal in the 2007 world samba Championships, would you believe?
:37:05. > :37:09.Before concentrating on judo and what a good decision that was to
:37:10. > :37:15.change over. Immediately into the action and on the attack. That is
:37:16. > :37:18.why a lot of his techniques come from different angles, Yeldov
:37:19. > :37:22.Smetov. A few of them, sometimes they are not quite judo techniques,
:37:23. > :37:29.they are a variation of, but he has different ways in. Beslan Mudranov,
:37:30. > :37:36.absolutely, look at that. Has he got it? Can you imagine that? The final
:37:37. > :37:44.of the Olympic Games, and he throws a flying armlock in and he just
:37:45. > :37:51.manages to hold him up off the ground, smacked off, to break the
:37:52. > :37:55.match. Magnificent, he is on his feet and the crowd come with him.
:37:56. > :38:04.Smet doesn't gain a point but he gives his opponent an idea of where
:38:05. > :38:07.he is coming from in this bout. These guys are twitching all over
:38:08. > :38:14.the place here and they are only looking for ippon. Yeldov Smetov is
:38:15. > :38:20.looking for the same techniques that two one is looking for. Beslan
:38:21. > :38:25.Mudranov is left-handed and Yeldov Smetov is attacking with the right
:38:26. > :38:35.hand. An inner thigh throw. One of the biggest techniques you can get
:38:36. > :38:42.in judo will stop the referee won't like that. Yeldov Smetov backed out
:38:43. > :38:49.of the area so Beslan Mudranov will go ahead here. He's looking down at
:38:50. > :38:55.the ankle but he didn't roll the ankle. I can't believe you didn't
:38:56. > :38:58.get a penalty for that. He might have thought the referee out of it
:38:59. > :39:02.when he looked at his injured ankle, who knows? He has two games to play
:39:03. > :39:09.there, this is the main game out in the middle. Back to attention.
:39:10. > :39:14.Kazakhstan and Russia have to pick who is trying to be the Russia --
:39:15. > :39:17.aggressor there. He needs to be careful there with Mudranov leaning
:39:18. > :39:23.like that. He leaves himself vulnerable. Yes, Mudranov knows what
:39:24. > :39:33.he wants. He has an absolute game plan here. Smetov does as well. But
:39:34. > :39:37.when Smetov makes a mistake, he makes quite big mistakes and so he
:39:38. > :39:43.will have to be careful because Mudranov is waiting for that one
:39:44. > :39:46.mistake. Mudranov is 30 years of age and the voice of experience out
:39:47. > :39:52.there. Silver medallist in the World Championships in in 2014 so this is
:39:53. > :39:56.a little different, away from home, but in that similar rich vein of
:39:57. > :40:02.form. A left-handed inner thigh throw right the way up the middle
:40:03. > :40:09.again. He just needs to get the right angle for it. He needs to get
:40:10. > :40:15.all his weight under the Smetov. Number 16 in the world coming into
:40:16. > :40:19.this competition. Smetov is the number four in the world, the
:40:20. > :40:23.current world champions are three seed here. You can't afford to go
:40:24. > :40:26.into a contest with any great confidence in this level in this
:40:27. > :40:32.poor but he would have liked his chances. He knows he has to fight
:40:33. > :40:35.now. Yes, what a match this is. They are both looking for the right angle
:40:36. > :40:42.of approach and they are both looking for the ippon. It is a great
:40:43. > :40:47.match. It is an unexpected final but both of them are trying to come from
:40:48. > :40:54.different angles and trying to throw for the ippon. Does that tactic
:40:55. > :41:01.change with more than three minutes in? Do they keep at this? To the
:41:02. > :41:05.end? I think they both have condition here. They are walking to
:41:06. > :41:08.the middle to try and get in with it so they have good condition and they
:41:09. > :41:14.will still go for it. It will not change. Quite often a lot of the
:41:15. > :41:19.Kazakhstan or the Azerbaijan, stronger nations, they tend to last
:41:20. > :41:23.minute the power stirred of it which tends to go but certainly not in
:41:24. > :41:28.this match. Look at that. He is hardly breathing there, Mudranov.
:41:29. > :41:34.Smetov similar. It all may be true, but only one of these men can walk
:41:35. > :41:37.away with the gold-medal. Do they wait for counter attack or go on the
:41:38. > :41:46.attack? Smetov they're attempting it. Back to the mat once more.
:41:47. > :41:52.Something will happen soon. Coming up to the last minute, Mudranov
:41:53. > :41:56.can't do that again. He dropped onto his back there for an attack. He
:41:57. > :42:00.didn't break balance so he can't do it again otherwise he will get
:42:01. > :42:05.penalised. The referee is being very, very, very lenient with the
:42:06. > :42:13.penalties. He has got one Haider and very quick, Smetov to apologise to
:42:14. > :42:16.his opponent, Mudranov, in the eye. Attempted tentative grip high, it
:42:17. > :42:20.can happen easily with van hand going one way and the head of the
:42:21. > :42:24.opponent going the other. If you get a thumb in the eye it is not a great
:42:25. > :42:28.thing. He shakes it off and that is nice. Great respect for these two
:42:29. > :42:33.Olympic finalist. Just a matter whether Mudranov can see his man
:42:34. > :42:40.well enough. He has got to get back on the pace, you can't just allow
:42:41. > :42:46.Smetov to go ahead. The Olympic final is inside its last minute now.
:42:47. > :42:50.The scoreboard shows you there has been nothing yet. There has been
:42:51. > :42:54.plenty happening out there and plenty still to come, really working
:42:55. > :43:04.hard on the floor. These two are doing a lot. Mudranov their tries to
:43:05. > :43:09.change the direction. It really is all even space. Into the last 30
:43:10. > :43:16.seconds. They are both attacking and both going for it and no penalties.
:43:17. > :43:21.There could possibly be now. There was only one reason he did that and
:43:22. > :43:23.the referee lets it go. It is a gold-medal match and there is a lot
:43:24. > :43:27.of standing were between these two and I wonder whether it will be
:43:28. > :43:32.decided out there or not. Neither can grip up here. The Russian is
:43:33. > :43:36.really working hard, extremely hard. Smetov gets into the ground and up
:43:37. > :43:47.we come again. Eight seconds left and this could go into Golden score.
:43:48. > :43:50.60 kilos final. Wow, this is a real toe to toe. They had prepared for it
:43:51. > :43:55.but don't think they wanted. That is the end of the five minutes of this
:43:56. > :44:01.Olympic final with out of school. So now it is golden score time, what a
:44:02. > :44:06.way to decide the golden medal? What a way. Any score now, Giroud,
:44:07. > :44:12.penalty, anything to do with a strangle armour lock or hold down or
:44:13. > :44:17.anything for a score. A minor school. The first score will win
:44:18. > :44:26.this Olympic title. It changes it so much. Imagine of the Russia is in
:44:27. > :44:34.the white. A shoulder throw their from Smetov. Mudranov will have to
:44:35. > :44:38.fire back. It has got to be a proper attack, don't forget you can't just
:44:39. > :44:47.rotate without taking your opponent with you. You have got to grip.
:44:48. > :44:51.Mudranov is looking for the pick-up. This is a test, a real test of mind
:44:52. > :44:56.and body and both athletes are desperate not to make any mistakes,
:44:57. > :45:01.give an opportunity to the opposition. The referee is being
:45:02. > :45:06.very careful in staying out of this one... He has been very careful,
:45:07. > :45:10.little bit too... The thing is, if you don't break balance, it is a
:45:11. > :45:19.penalty. He has been very, very good. That is it! It is! The
:45:20. > :45:23.Russians are coming! Beslan Mudranov out of nowhere takes the gold medal.
:45:24. > :45:31.Look at that, the despair from Yeldov Smetov on the mat. That man
:45:32. > :45:36.is ready to celebrate. Look at the cheeky grin on the face of the
:45:37. > :45:39.30-year-old. That was absolute brilliance, the footwork that from
:45:40. > :45:47.him. He was just waiting for that one mistake and it came in golden
:45:48. > :45:55.score. 44 seconds into golden score and he takes Smetov over. What an
:45:56. > :46:03.amazing foot sweep that was to take the gold-medal. Beslan Mudranov and
:46:04. > :46:08.Russia are the gold. It's time to celebrate in the stands. The silver
:46:09. > :46:11.medal for Kazakhstan and to Yeldov Smetov. Look at that, that's what
:46:12. > :46:22.it's all about. It worked so hard for so long and now a gold-medal.
:46:23. > :46:29.DAN: Is the man who managed to see off Ashley McKenzie, Yeldos Smetov,
:46:30. > :46:33.the world champion with a bit of an upset, settling for the silver
:46:34. > :46:38.medal. During the course of our time on BBC Four, you may have heard some
:46:39. > :46:43.Samba magic, let's go through our makeshift TV studio, to try and
:46:44. > :46:48.bring you some live Samba before we go to the boxing and see Joe Cordina
:46:49. > :46:54.and Lauren Sarkodie in action. You can hear the music, that's our BBC
:46:55. > :47:01.studio behind us, we are sharing this studio with Brazil's main
:47:02. > :47:05.presenters, but they aren't here at this time, so we can go through
:47:06. > :47:15.their set, let's go all the way through here. I told you that
:47:16. > :47:21.Copacabana beach is always packed, there is tennis and boxing going on,
:47:22. > :47:26.at night-time, it really comes to life, this is live Samba on BBC
:47:27. > :47:31.Four. On Copacabana Beach, during the Rio Olympics, a look. -- have a
:47:32. > :48:32.look. SAMBA MUSIC CHEERING
:48:33. > :48:36.That was good, wasn't it? What a reception, they will be here for a
:48:37. > :48:40.while, while we continue to listen to the Samba, we promised you
:48:41. > :48:46.boxing, let's bring you some of that, before we get into the ring,
:48:47. > :48:50.here are some quotes from the man from Wales who was hoping for a
:48:51. > :48:56.wonderful Olympic Games in Rio, his name? Joe Cordina. I was a late
:48:57. > :49:04.starter to boxing, I started when I was 16, that's quite late for a
:49:05. > :49:07.boxer. Within 2.5 years, I had got onto the GB programme, that's quite
:49:08. > :49:10.quick when you think about it. COMMENTATOR: Joe Cordina comes away
:49:11. > :49:17.with a Commonwealth Games bronze medal. All I wanted to do was box,
:49:18. > :49:23.the first was to medal at a Commonwealth Games, which I did,
:49:24. > :49:29.then the main aim is to win a medal at the Olympics. I've qualified, so
:49:30. > :49:34.one box is ticked, the next is to go and take the other box. COMMENTATOR:
:49:35. > :49:40.Joe Cordina with twinkle toed foot work. I've been dreaming about the
:49:41. > :49:45.final, that I would be in a final Olympic Games, boxing for an Olympic
:49:46. > :49:52.medal, that is where all of the tournaments go to, I think there are
:49:53. > :49:57.11 of us and I am the only Welshman there. It feels good. Hopefully, I
:49:58. > :50:05.can fly the flag and I just want to make my family proud and fulfil my
:50:06. > :50:10.dreams. It's been a special sporting summer for the Welshman Joe Cordina,
:50:11. > :50:15.is he able to continue that? We will bring you his fight from the boxing
:50:16. > :50:20.arena, but we do like an Olympic guide, there are changes to the
:50:21. > :50:24.boxing this time around. There are no head guards, the first time that
:50:25. > :50:27.has taken place since boxing back in 1980, to brush up on the rules? We
:50:28. > :50:40.have our special Olympic guide. Boxing has been an Olympic sport
:50:41. > :50:44.since Lewis in 1904, yet women's boxing was a recent addition when
:50:45. > :50:48.introduced in London 2012. Women compete in three different
:50:49. > :50:52.weight categories, while for the men there are ten weight classes. The
:50:53. > :50:57.men's and women's competitions are direct elimination, with the final
:50:58. > :51:02.two boxers competing for the silver and gold medals. But the duration of
:51:03. > :51:07.the Balts death, the men's 33-minute rounds but the women compete over
:51:08. > :51:10.four two minute rounds. A recent change stipulates that mailbox is no
:51:11. > :51:15.longer wear head guards, but the women will continue to do so.
:51:16. > :51:19.Different ways a boxer can win our on points, Technical Knockout,
:51:20. > :51:25.technical knockout injury, and straight knockout. Scoring is based
:51:26. > :51:34.on a system called the ten point must system, at the end of a round,
:51:35. > :51:39.the judge has to decide on a winner, but if they bowed goes to the end,
:51:40. > :51:41.the winner is a boxer with the highest score.
:51:42. > :51:47.-- if a bout. DAN: That is the guide to Olympic
:51:48. > :51:52.boxing. The Samba band are still going strong here.
:51:53. > :51:57.Now for some live boxing, Joe Cordina, we will join him in the
:51:58. > :52:05.lightweight bout. Our commentators Richie Woodhall and familiar voice
:52:06. > :52:11.of big Rod McIntosh commentating for us. COMMENTATOR: At the midpoint of
:52:12. > :52:15.this opening round... In the 60 kilograms lightweight division,
:52:16. > :52:18.contested between athletes from Uzbekistan and Qatar, the man
:52:19. > :52:28.wearing red, he's the tournament five seed, competing in his second
:52:29. > :52:40.Olympic Games. Here in Rio 2016. He qualified via that a PB
:52:41. > :52:46.ranking, the big change to the Olympic competition is that
:52:47. > :52:52.professional boxers from outside of the governing body are permitted in
:52:53. > :52:56.Olympic competition. His opponent is born and resides in Germany, but he
:52:57. > :53:04.has been competing for Qatar since the start of 2015. He is competing
:53:05. > :53:10.in his first Olympic Games after finishing fifth at the global
:53:11. > :53:20.qualification event in back or, as by Sian, in June. -- Azerbaijan. On
:53:21. > :53:25.the outside, he is a very relaxed man. The man from Uzbekistan, in
:53:26. > :53:35.red. A low and relaxed guard, bringing his opponent onto his
:53:36. > :53:38.shots. Some boos in the crowd, probably because there was not a lot
:53:39. > :53:56.of action in that round. Some of the action, that's long left
:53:57. > :54:02.hook from Hurshid Tojibaev, single shots, plenty of them, comfortable
:54:03. > :54:07.working from the outside. Pretty relaxed. Let's have a look at the
:54:08. > :54:10.scores. They have all gone for Hurshid Tojibaev. If you have not
:54:11. > :54:16.seen Olympic boxing since London 2012, that is one of the changes
:54:17. > :54:20.that have been implemented in the four years of this Olympic cycle, no
:54:21. > :54:26.longer computer scoring but the ten point system is closely associated
:54:27. > :54:33.with professional ranks. In the second round... The man
:54:34. > :54:37.wearing blue. Hakan Erseker, the first Qatari boxer in history to
:54:38. > :54:42.compete and qualify for an Olympic boxing tournament. He has conceded
:54:43. > :54:48.the opening round across the board against the experienced two time
:54:49. > :54:52.Olympian, Hurshid Tojibaev, 26 years old from Uzbekistan, tournament
:54:53. > :54:56.number five seed. His first Olympic appearance was in Beijing eight
:54:57. > :55:01.years ago. Competing in the 54 kilograms weight class. Eliminated
:55:02. > :55:08.from that tournament in the first preliminary round. That was against
:55:09. > :55:15.Bruno Julie, it excuses me, second preliminary round, against Bruno
:55:16. > :55:20.Julie of Mauritius. Hoping to make deeper progress in this division, he
:55:21. > :55:28.started brightly and has demonstrated his experience. A
:55:29. > :55:37.little too much in the course of that opening round... One has to
:55:38. > :55:43.wonder what he can do differently, as he takes a stiff left hook... He
:55:44. > :55:44.started the second round quite well, Hakan Erseker, look at Hurshid
:55:45. > :55:54.Tojibaev, shunning -- showing class.
:55:55. > :55:58.Mainly single shots are what he's throwing. Hakan Erseker started the
:55:59. > :56:02.round quickly, he needed a tempo change, it was not enough, that is
:56:03. > :56:07.why the judges went against him. He started the second round well, he
:56:08. > :56:11.lets it slip again. Hurshid Tojibaev has adapted to the style in front of
:56:12. > :56:16.him a lot better. Picking his shots now, the news back. He has picked
:56:17. > :56:24.some effective punches indeed, -- the fighter from Uzbekistan.
:56:25. > :56:32.Experience from World Series boxing, the tournament contested over five
:56:33. > :56:37.three minute rounds without a head guard.
:56:38. > :56:46.Running repairs required to his waist bad job and, on the shorts of
:56:47. > :56:52.Hakan Erseker. He has two double up his attacks and sustain the
:56:53. > :57:00.pressure. He has a low god, fairly relaxed.
:57:01. > :57:05.-- low God. You can catch up, and do better work in clusters, threes and
:57:06. > :57:09.fours. If you keep those hands down, you keep hitting the target, but
:57:10. > :57:17.unfortunately, Hakan Erseker has not done that. Hakan Erseker making an
:57:18. > :57:24.appearance from professional boxing, picking that up last year, winning
:57:25. > :57:29.two, losing one. Those Balts are contested over eight
:57:30. > :57:34.and ten three-minute rounds. -- Balts. It gives an impression of
:57:35. > :57:38.the revolutionary changes implemented into Olympic boxing.
:57:39. > :57:53.Since London 2012. The first professional made his bout from
:57:54. > :57:59.Italy this morning. That was Tomasoni, competing over 12 rounds.
:58:00. > :58:02.Here he is, dropping down to three three-minute rounds, these men have
:58:03. > :58:07.both picked up experience in professional boxing. Better work
:58:08. > :58:14.from Hurshid Tojibaev there. A lovely left her on the inside. And
:58:15. > :58:18.Hakan Erseker came back with his own left, the man in blue has an all or
:58:19. > :58:23.nothing approach now in this last round. Let's have a look at the
:58:24. > :58:29.scores here... Hurshid Tojibaev again, getting all of the scores
:58:30. > :58:35.here. One of them by a score of 10-8. Like professional boxing, you
:58:36. > :58:40.generally have to put your man on the floor, generally, to get a 10-8
:58:41. > :58:46.margin. Beginning the third round in Olympic
:58:47. > :58:50.style boxing, it's worth pointing out a dominant round without putting
:58:51. > :58:55.your man on the canvas can be scored, and often is scored, 10-8 in
:58:56. > :58:59.favour of the boxer in ascendancy. That interpretation is open in
:59:00. > :59:04.professional ranks as well, but generally convention is that if the
:59:05. > :59:09.man goes on the floor, it is a 10-8 round automatically in favour of the
:59:10. > :59:13.man who put his opponent there. Conversely, you can see a fighter
:59:14. > :59:19.take a trip to the canvas, in Olympic style boxing. And it's not
:59:20. > :59:25.be scored 10-8, that is one of the variants that exists in professional
:59:26. > :59:32.code and open boxing. Again, we haven't seen it since London 2012,
:59:33. > :59:39.the adjective" amateur" has been removed from the governing body's
:59:40. > :59:46.acronym, so it is referred to as Olympic style boxing. The key to
:59:47. > :59:50.Hurshid Tojibaev's success is that he has controlled the pace
:59:51. > :59:58.fantastically well on the outside, picking his move, but he is up
:59:59. > :00:02.against an opponent in Hakan Erseker who has literally boxed at the same
:00:03. > :00:06.pace, not upping the tempo or changing anything. It allows Hurshid
:00:07. > :00:12.Tojibaev to do what he wants in terms of dictating the pace, he is
:00:13. > :00:14.in his comfort zone, he has had harder spas, and he is quality, but
