:02:23. > :02:28.moments of Olympic Games of days gone by. -- of Brazil. This
:02:29. > :02:32.wonderful city of Rio de Janeiro will hopefully provide some great
:02:33. > :02:35.moments again in 2016. Put the kettle on, we have a long night
:02:36. > :02:41.ahead. Caffeine needed, keep the snacks handy. This is what is coming
:02:42. > :02:50.up. These swimming finals get under way tonight. James Guy is going for
:02:51. > :02:55.gold in the 400 metres freestyle. The 400 metres medley is up for
:02:56. > :03:03.Hannah Miley, a podium place in site alongside Amy Wilmott. -- insight.
:03:04. > :03:05.Adam Peaty set a world record in the 100 metres breast stroke in the
:03:06. > :03:12.heats. Later, the semifinals, alongside Ross Murdoch. And before
:03:13. > :03:17.all of that, Great Britain's women's hockey team get their campaign away
:03:18. > :03:22.-- under way against old rivals Australia. We have a long night
:03:23. > :03:25.ahead of us, and what great sport we have for you as well. This is the
:03:26. > :03:30.timetable for the night's viewing. In just under half-an-hour, Team
:03:31. > :03:35.GB's hockey team get under way, the 2012 bronze medallist taking on
:03:36. > :03:38.Australia. We will also bring you the final round of qualifying in
:03:39. > :03:42.an's gymnastics, including confirmation for Great Britain. That
:03:43. > :03:45.is at one o'clock. Then Max Litchfield is in the first final of
:03:46. > :03:49.the night in the swimming pool, the 400 metres medley. He has had a
:03:50. > :03:58.personal best in the heats. James Guy is at 2:30 a.m.. Adam Peaty and
:03:59. > :04:09.Ross Murdoch in the semifinals at 3:10 a.m.. We would love you to get
:04:10. > :04:12.involved. Use the hashtag #BBCOlympics and also get involved
:04:13. > :04:15.on Facebook. If you are inspired by any of these wonderful athletes in
:04:16. > :04:22.this magnificent city of Rio, then get to our Get Inspired page on the
:04:23. > :04:26.BBC sport website. Let's turn our attention to the women's hockey. If
:04:27. > :04:29.you remember London 2012, that was a remarkable journey for the women's
:04:30. > :04:33.hockey team when they picked up a bronze medal. They take on old
:04:34. > :04:38.rivals Australia. Mel Clewlow was there for us this evening. Good
:04:39. > :04:43.evening. How excited are you for Team GB's quest for glory this year?
:04:44. > :04:46.It is going to be a massive tournament. There is no bigger game
:04:47. > :04:51.than playing Australia in your opening game. We have just seen the
:04:52. > :04:55.USA beat Argentina, which has upset the pool at it. Lots of pressure on
:04:56. > :05:02.the girls tonight. What sort of challenge does this Australian side
:05:03. > :05:04.-- impose -- Australian side impose? They like to put pressure on the
:05:05. > :05:09.ball the moment the whistle blows. Team GB have to be on top of their
:05:10. > :05:11.game tonight. Obviously the Australians have not won a medal in
:05:12. > :05:19.this event since the Sydney picks since 2000. No, they haven't. Since
:05:20. > :05:23.2008 they have been targeting Rio as the next games, I guess, to win a
:05:24. > :05:26.medal. Having covered them at the champions Trophy recently, they are
:05:27. > :05:31.a team that is on the up. They could do some damage here in Rio. Team G
:05:32. > :05:36.were absolutely remarkable in 2012. Who are the stars we should you
:05:37. > :05:40.looking out for this year? Chris Cullen will always be a threat from
:05:41. > :05:44.penalty corners. Lili Ousley is the young world player of the year, so
:05:45. > :05:50.she is one true account for up front. Susanna Townsend is a dynamo.
:05:51. > :05:54.Then the likes of Alex Johnson, Kate Richardson Walsh as captain. There
:05:55. > :05:58.is strength and depth. Maddie Hinch is one of the best goalkeepers in
:05:59. > :06:01.the world. We have got some quality players out there tonight, and
:06:02. > :06:05.hopefully the girls can do well and pick up the three points. Mel, thank
:06:06. > :06:09.you. We will be back to you on about 20 minutes. One of the things we
:06:10. > :06:13.will be focusing on this evening is swimming. Lots of medals up for
:06:14. > :06:24.grabs tonight, and these are the superstars you need to look out for.
:06:25. > :06:31.Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian in history. Sarah so
:06:32. > :06:42.strong, very quick indeed. Sun Yang, so good. My goodness! The new
:06:43. > :06:53.Olympic champion is Missy Franklin from the USA. He has won it! Very
:06:54. > :06:59.good swimming indeed. Brilliant swim from Hannah Miley. Cate Campbell
:07:00. > :07:06.gets the gold, Bronte Campbell gets the silver. Jess Carling takes gold!
:07:07. > :07:11.What a brilliant swim it was. Ryan Loch Dee wants for the medley. Look
:07:12. > :07:16.at that. Great swimming from Emily Seebohm of Australia. The gold medal
:07:17. > :07:32.goes to James Guy for Great Britain. Well, the aquatics centre is part of
:07:33. > :07:36.the newly built Olympic Park to the west of Rio's city centre. 15 one
:07:37. > :07:39.half thousand fans in the Irena, along with our swimming team,
:07:40. > :07:45.fantastically anchored by Helen Skelton. Good evening, Helen.
:07:46. > :07:48.Fantastically, I will take that. Thank you. I don't think it is too
:07:49. > :07:51.big of a statement to call this the house of fun. It was fun this
:07:52. > :07:56.afternoon in the first session, when we saw a world record smashed. Adam
:07:57. > :07:59.Peaty, spearheading the campaign for the Brits, smashed his own world
:08:00. > :08:04.record. Tonight, it is all about the medals. We were here this afternoon,
:08:05. > :08:08.but in the last couple of hours that podium has been put in place. Some
:08:09. > :08:11.of these -- somebody's little boy or somebody's little girl will stand up
:08:12. > :08:15.on top of that podium is an old and pick champion. It will happen in the
:08:16. > :08:19.next couple of hours. Betty Adlington and Mark Foster join me.
:08:20. > :08:23.Before we get into the specifics of who might be up there for Britain,
:08:24. > :08:27.let's talk about the British team in general. Expectations for the week.
:08:28. > :08:30.One of the hardest selection processes in the world. How often
:08:31. > :08:34.are we going to see them on that podium? It is a tough team this
:08:35. > :08:38.year. In London we had about 40 athletes, only 26 this year. It is a
:08:39. > :08:42.smaller and more focused team. But we have lots of chances. In Beijing
:08:43. > :08:47.and London we only got three medals, and fair enough, they were different
:08:48. > :08:50.colours, but they were only three medals. This time I would like to
:08:51. > :08:56.see them get more than three. We just made a list of who could. There
:08:57. > :09:01.is Ross, PT, James Guy, Siobhan Riera,, the relays, we have got so
:09:02. > :09:04.many medal chances that hopefully tonight we can get off to a great
:09:05. > :09:08.start and get that ball rolling. Jason hit the nail on the head when
:09:09. > :09:15.he said we would need to Kathleen to watch this live in Britain. We are
:09:16. > :09:22.going to need Kathleen here! -- caffeine. Who are some of the people
:09:23. > :09:26.that we should be staying up for? Well, Michael Phelps is in. He gave
:09:27. > :09:30.up for a couple of years but is now making a comeback. He will be here.
:09:31. > :09:34.Missy Franklin, Caitlin techie, Ryan locked it, Cate Campbell from
:09:35. > :09:39.Australia. So many people to look out for this week. Just to put a pin
:09:40. > :09:43.into night, this is for the rest of the week, but we have talked lots
:09:44. > :09:45.about Adam Peaty coming into this as world champion, European champion,
:09:46. > :09:50.Commonwealth champion, world record holder. He is on course to take the
:09:51. > :09:56.Olympic title as well. Set your alarm, because he could be the first
:09:57. > :09:59.male champion since Adrian Moorhouse, unless we see somebody
:10:00. > :10:03.like James Guy or Hannah Miley up on that podium first. We cannot talk
:10:04. > :10:07.about suing without mentioning the Russians. That has overshadowed all
:10:08. > :10:10.the buildup to the swimming. We have heard that it looks like the
:10:11. > :10:14.Russians will be on the starting list. Casanova, for instance, a
:10:15. > :10:18.young lady who has been found guilty twice. She has failed a drug test of
:10:19. > :10:23.banned substances. You are allowed to get off the fence, it is your
:10:24. > :10:27.opinion. Vekic? It is difficult. We were told coming into this that
:10:28. > :10:30.those seven athletes were banned, and the fact that that has just been
:10:31. > :10:34.overturned is very disappointing, especially when there is quite a lot
:10:35. > :10:39.of athletes in there, especially in British events. So we feel lots of
:10:40. > :10:43.passion about that. It will be an interesting week to see how the
:10:44. > :10:47.crowd react to them. The thing is, ultimately, the IOC had an
:10:48. > :10:51.opportunity to take a stand and they pushed it towards the federations. I
:10:52. > :10:55.think that the world governing body, for a number of years, has been very
:10:56. > :10:59.weak. They need to make a stand. We have always talked about this, if
:11:00. > :11:02.you test positive anything, it is your responsibility what you put in
:11:03. > :11:07.your body, I think it should be a lifetime ban. And once that is in
:11:08. > :11:11.place, hopefully people will not cheat any more. It is not just the
:11:12. > :11:15.Russians. Sun Yang, the world champion, will see him tonight, and
:11:16. > :11:19.Britain's James Guy in this one. He had a brilliant world champ in ships
:11:20. > :11:20.last year, coming away with a gold and silver. He was speaking to Steve
:11:21. > :11:40.Parry. ORCHESTRAL MUSIC. It is unusual for
:11:41. > :11:44.Olympic athletes, isn't it? To being gauged in fishing? I have been
:11:45. > :11:48.fishing for years and I love it, I am obsessed. It is a great way to
:11:49. > :11:53.shut down and shut off and have something that is completely
:11:54. > :11:57.different from swimming. It is not about records and times, it is about
:11:58. > :12:01.what bait you are using. A way to calm down and relax and enjoy
:12:02. > :12:08.myself. The men's 400 metre freestyle. James Guy, out in front!
:12:09. > :12:17.A fantastic silver medal for James Guy! Going in there, with no
:12:18. > :12:23.expectation, I thought I might get a medal in the 400 metres. Get a
:12:24. > :12:27.sneaky third. And I got a silver. I was excited, I was hopeful, I was
:12:28. > :12:33.confident, and I was relaxed. Because for me, that was the goal.
:12:34. > :12:38.This is going to be really close! James Guy in the centre. The gold
:12:39. > :12:47.medal goes to James Guy, world champion in the 200 metres
:12:48. > :12:51.freestyle! Well done, Sir! The goal to me was to go and have fun. I did
:12:52. > :12:56.that, and it paid off. To get a medal was special. Success in that
:12:57. > :13:01.Rio would be great, getting a personal best, but it would be nice
:13:02. > :13:05.to get a medal as well. I want to do Team GB proud, to my country proud.
:13:06. > :13:10.And my family has come so much for me, it would be nice to pay that
:13:11. > :13:14.back to them. He is the greatest athlete of all time, Michael Phelps.
:13:15. > :13:19.I have watched him since I was nine years old. It is phenomenal to be in
:13:20. > :13:23.the same pool as him. I cannot control what anybody else does. I am
:13:24. > :13:29.going to do my thing and race as hard as I can and play as fast as I
:13:30. > :13:34.can. I feel fit and strong and ready to go. I have waited all my life to
:13:35. > :13:40.do this, and now I am finally here. It is pretty special.
:13:41. > :13:44.James Guy, you can not question his calibre, his character, his spirit.
:13:45. > :13:54.We saw him today in his heat. That face says it all, will doesn't it?
:13:55. > :13:57.It was a tired swim, but it was not really. It is the beginning of the
:13:58. > :14:02.meat. He took it out really well at the beginning, I thought. Really
:14:03. > :14:07.smoothly. Back has said this before. I didn't do for hundreds of 800
:14:08. > :14:12.metres, I just did one lap, it was easy. When you are used to it,
:14:13. > :14:17.sometimes it is quite hard work, isn't it? Yes, and keeping the James
:14:18. > :14:20.Guy, and all our British athletes, we do struggle trying to swim at
:14:21. > :14:23.this time in the morning and then again in the evening, because we
:14:24. > :14:26.don't do that at home. It is easy to James to go to the trials and swim
:14:27. > :14:31.in all right average heat swim, and then get to the final. When it
:14:32. > :14:35.considers big competition you have this in a very and then back it up.
:14:36. > :14:39.-- when you come to this competition. I used to struggle with
:14:40. > :14:42.that. It is a shame for James that he has not will implement at what
:14:43. > :14:47.Adam has done for the past two years by swimming quick each round. He has
:14:48. > :14:51.not done that same tactic. It has been working for him, though, so he
:14:52. > :14:56.can say, actually, I will stick with my own race. He is a racer, isn't
:14:57. > :15:01.he? He likes the chase. He likes hurting himself. He does. When he
:15:02. > :15:04.has to, he hurt himself. Looking at the trials in April, the time then
:15:05. > :15:08.was two seconds faster than this morning. There is a lot more they
:15:09. > :15:12.are, if it can come out. Worth mentioning Stephen Milne is well. He
:15:13. > :15:14.was in the heats of the 400 metres earlier today to stop his former
:15:15. > :15:19.personal best, faster than he had has. Word on Max Litchfield, because
:15:20. > :15:23.he is going into his first Olympic final, his first Alan pick games.
:15:24. > :15:26.Sheffield, stay with us tonight, because you could see your boy in
:15:27. > :15:32.the finals. Hannah Miley, we will see her as well. She comes into this
:15:33. > :15:43.even second fastest in the world this year.
:15:44. > :15:57.I love what I do and the results will come. Is a silver! Well done
:15:58. > :16:03.Hannah Miley! Hannah's dad. Wonderful thing to be able to share
:16:04. > :16:08.your daughter. Your full-time coach is your dad. How much does it help
:16:09. > :16:11.you that he is full-time with you now? It helps a lot to have a coach
:16:12. > :16:15.full time, knowing that whenever you go to a training session, you have
:16:16. > :16:21.your coach that two tiny and keep an eye on you. To pick up on the little
:16:22. > :16:26.bits in the water. I've had so many sessions where he has had to go off
:16:27. > :16:29.to work, he used to fly helicopters and he would leave the training
:16:30. > :16:33.session. It's great from my point of view for him to be around more now.
:16:34. > :16:38.He can read how I am in the water, he can change the sessions based on
:16:39. > :16:42.how I feel and how I look. I get a lot more one-on-one attention which
:16:43. > :16:46.in the long run has been really good. To be able to make the Olympic
:16:47. > :16:50.Games, I am the one that's in the pool, it's a reflection of all the
:16:51. > :16:54.hard work and sacrifice that we have made as a family. The whole family
:16:55. > :16:58.are supportive. It's not just me and my dad, my mum and my two brothers
:16:59. > :17:03.as well. We are a unit that works closely. Hannah Miley wins gold for
:17:04. > :17:08.Scotland! What a start for the Commonwealth Games! A whole bunch of
:17:09. > :17:14.people in the Stadium were behind her. European titles and world
:17:15. > :17:19.medals. What would it mean to finally get the Olympic honour? I
:17:20. > :17:22.would love to be able to say at the end that we have done it. Every
:17:23. > :17:30.athlete streamed to come away from the -- with the medal but how much I
:17:31. > :17:34.have learnt about myself. Yes, the metal at the end will be amazing but
:17:35. > :17:40.that is not it. It sounds so final that if you get the medal it is like
:17:41. > :17:47.finishing a computer game. The journey is not there, it keeps
:17:48. > :17:50.going. -- medal. I would love the medal and I dream of being on the
:17:51. > :17:52.podium but I don't see that as being the end and that is the final
:17:53. > :18:03.achievement. There is so much more after. If my child likes me half as
:18:04. > :18:09.much as Hannah loves her father, I would be very lucky. She sees her
:18:10. > :18:14.dad as his hero -- her hero. That breaks your heart, doesn't it?
:18:15. > :18:19.Patrick loves the sport, the dad, and as a coach, he is so passionate,
:18:20. > :18:23.he wants to help everyone. I remain to him doing it with me and it was
:18:24. > :18:32.like" you are OK, you are not my dad" will stop they love --. They
:18:33. > :18:36.have squabbles like any parent and daughter do but it makes them
:18:37. > :18:40.stronger. They work well together. They have tried so many different
:18:41. > :18:43.things. For Hannah to stay top of the game like she has and be at her
:18:44. > :18:49.third Olympics, it is credit to them. If you are an American
:18:50. > :18:54.filmmaker, Hannah is the one you would make a story about. She
:18:55. > :19:01.trained in a tiny pool. It is an endearing, unique setup, isn't it? A
:19:02. > :19:05.lot of other people couldn't do it. Patrick's attention to detail is
:19:06. > :19:09.second to none. He even invented this device that you put inside your
:19:10. > :19:17.hat that gives you tempo advice. He came up with that concept and it
:19:18. > :19:24.became an invention. They use it an awful lot. The whole family setup is
:19:25. > :19:28.their brother is someone that pushes her in training every day. A
:19:29. > :19:34.training partner. It is intense. When you get those results, it's
:19:35. > :19:37.very heartwarming. She has a European medal, Commonwealth medal,
:19:38. > :19:46.she doesn't have an Olympic medal. Stiff competition, though. This
:19:47. > :19:59.morning it was that could tinker show. She dominated. She is just so
:20:00. > :20:02.powerful and so strong -- Katinka. She wanted to get the world record
:20:03. > :20:07.and she just missed out this morning. Not just Hannah in this
:20:08. > :20:20.event for the Brits. Aimee Willmott as well. What you make of her
:20:21. > :20:24.chances? She has a good chance. I think Miley and Wilmot together.
:20:25. > :20:31.Potentially that could be whether medals come from the silver and
:20:32. > :20:35.bronze. Aimee Willmott looked tired this morning. Her strokes looked
:20:36. > :20:42.good, though. She paced the race better. Hannah needs to be out on
:20:43. > :20:47.the fly and be with them more. Miley is going to be in the bottom with
:20:48. > :20:53.Del Monte and Dorado up in lane true and three. Stick with us if you want
:20:54. > :20:57.to see whether Hannah will get an Olympic medal to add to her
:20:58. > :21:10.collection. This is how things are shaping up. Two or 3am, guys. In
:21:11. > :21:13.Saturday night! Adam Peaty, eight minutes past three, will see the 100
:21:14. > :21:22.metre breaststroke semifinals. Murdoch going in the second one. Can
:21:23. > :21:27.he get faster? Yes. Why not? If people can do the training then
:21:28. > :21:32.people can get up at 3am and watch them. That was a phenomenal world
:21:33. > :21:42.record this morning. Anything is possible with this guide. He wasn't
:21:43. > :21:45.even out of breath! -- this guy. He wasn't out of breath and he talked
:21:46. > :21:50.about inspiring the next generation of swimmers. If you have children,
:21:51. > :21:54.let them stay up all night to night echoes my children are ready awake
:21:55. > :22:01.at that time. Joking aside, inspiring the next generation. --
:22:02. > :22:07.because my children are already a week. We have had a history of
:22:08. > :22:13.Olympic champions. If you have inspiration in that event, you are
:22:14. > :22:20.one of those inspirations. Thank you. We have always had some good
:22:21. > :22:21.people in there. There are plenty of reasons to stay up to night.
:22:22. > :22:35.Everyone loves swimming! I live and breathe swimming. The
:22:36. > :22:43.feeling of what is unlike anything else. I love being in the pool.
:22:44. > :22:47.There is something inside me that told me I could be fast. It shows
:22:48. > :22:53.you care about something. I've spent my whole life 's training for this
:22:54. > :22:59.moment. I want to push myself to the limits, simple as that. It is
:23:00. > :23:03.everything to every athlete. In it put everything into each row and
:23:04. > :23:07.just to put yourself in the final. I've wanted it so much for so long
:23:08. > :23:13.and I am going to go on the podium and going to get it absolutely
:23:14. > :23:19.everything. --I am going to give it absolutely everything. Lots of love
:23:20. > :23:22.for the swimming already. It will be back with Helen and her marvellous
:23:23. > :23:27.team in the aquatic centre just before two o'clock. Let's turn our
:23:28. > :23:30.attention to what else is happening right across the Olympics in Rio de
:23:31. > :23:35.Janeiro. This is what we have available for you. If you fancy a
:23:36. > :23:43.bit of table tennis, Paul Drinkhall is up against it on BBC for right
:23:44. > :23:50.now. On the Red Button, Venus Williams is taking on Flipkens of
:23:51. > :23:54.Belgium. If you fancy live football, the women's first round match
:23:55. > :24:03.Colombia versus New Zealand is light. That is the tremendous
:24:04. > :24:08.stadium. We will focus on Team GB's women in the hockey taking on
:24:09. > :24:12.Australia, old rivals, later. In a few minutes time. This remind you
:24:13. > :24:18.what happened today when the men get their Olympic campaign under way
:24:19. > :24:22.against Belgium. Great Britain looking for a way out. Slightly
:24:23. > :24:30.trapped in the corner. Pushed all the way back. There is space. A shot
:24:31. > :24:39.on goal! First goal of the match to Belgium! It was too hot to handle.
:24:40. > :24:43.The ball intercepted. Jackson not getting full contact. He was
:24:44. > :24:50.claiming that he was impeded but no matter. He is back in possession
:24:51. > :24:56.now. Ashley Jackson, a flick to his left. Inside the circle! Can they
:24:57. > :24:58.feed it through? What a strike! What a goal for Great Britain. Superbly
:24:59. > :25:09.put away by Nick! The Great Britain defenders are
:25:10. > :25:20.charging the ball bravely. A second opportunity. It's a for Belgian. --
:25:21. > :25:29.it is a goal. Across the face of goal. Good save! Down on his Delhi,
:25:30. > :25:37.West strokes the ball away. -- belly. Great Britain one.
:25:38. > :25:50.It's an open goal! It can't miss! He doesn't miss. The final scoreline,
:25:51. > :25:53.Belgium four, Great Britain one. A very disappointing start for our men
:25:54. > :25:58.in the hockey. They have to bounce back. They take on New Zealand
:25:59. > :26:00.tomorrow. What lies in store for our women? A big game coming up live
:26:01. > :26:15.against Australia. When I look back to the London
:26:16. > :26:27.Olympics, it feels like I am watching a movie and there is
:26:28. > :26:31.someone else in it. It is surreal. The biggest thing you learn is the
:26:32. > :26:34.small margins make the biggest difference. At the Olympics, under
:26:35. > :26:36.high pressure, the difference between winning and losing could be
:26:37. > :26:46.making a tackle or making an opportunity. What a comeback this
:26:47. > :26:49.has been! This is a different group than what went to London in the
:26:50. > :26:54.Olympic Games. Having some of those players that have been through the
:26:55. > :26:56.London cycle and had success, the young people don't know what they
:26:57. > :27:01.don't know in having the older players guided them and mentored
:27:02. > :27:05.them through the ups and downs of the Olympics is absolutely
:27:06. > :27:13.fundamental. Howdy you feel about going into what will be for the
:27:14. > :27:18.Olympic Games? -- how do you feel? In 1999, I didn't think I would be
:27:19. > :27:29.here. I feel very, very lucky and privileged. I am a mother hen. I
:27:30. > :27:33.will slap you around the face and give you a hug. We spend so much
:27:34. > :27:36.time with each other, I just care. We become so involved in each
:27:37. > :27:40.other's lives that you really care about the person. It makes us tight
:27:41. > :27:57.as a group. I am unfortunately the youngest! I
:27:58. > :28:05.was hoping someone younger would come in but I guess a the baby. They
:28:06. > :28:09.look after me. Can you describe the pure excitement of being part of an
:28:10. > :28:14.Olympic squad? I couldn't hold it in. It was such an amazing moment.
:28:15. > :28:18.That day I could finally just think about the Olympics. I won 100 %
:28:19. > :28:25.believe we could win a gold metal without a doubt. -- medal. At the
:28:26. > :28:29.end of the day, it will be part. The world of women's hockey has grown.
:28:30. > :28:32.The toxic sites are all able to beat each other which makes it exciting.
:28:33. > :28:49.-- the top six sides. We think we are a good enough side
:28:50. > :28:55.to win a medal. It's what we have really wanted.
:28:56. > :28:58.Let's had live to the Olympics hockey venue. It is north of the
:28:59. > :29:10.Olympic Park. Good evening, everybody. The eagerly
:29:11. > :29:12.anticipated clash of Great Britain and Australia. The first match for
:29:13. > :29:32.both teams fall pool B. --4. -- for pool B. This game has added
:29:33. > :29:37.zest and plenty of importance. Australia in the green and gold.
:29:38. > :29:41.They will be hitting from left to right. Great Britain playing in
:29:42. > :29:54.already to night. The Argentinian umpire, one of two.
:29:55. > :29:59.We have had top temperatures today. It is a warm 25 with 50% humidity.
:30:00. > :30:06.The middle of winter. It feels like a hot day in an English summer.
:30:07. > :30:14.Australia get things under way. The Hockeyroos. Good evening, Mel, we
:30:15. > :30:19.have been very excited about this fixture all day. It is a cracking
:30:20. > :30:22.game for Great Britain to start their Olympic campaign. As you said,
:30:23. > :30:27.there is a lot of rivalry between these two. They played against each
:30:28. > :30:30.other in February and spend champions Trophy in June. They know
:30:31. > :30:31.a lot about each other and will be interesting to see who can get the
:30:32. > :30:52.upper hand. A new format with the time these
:30:53. > :30:55.days in hockey. We play for my quarters of 15 minutes each, with a
:30:56. > :30:58.ten minute break the half-time after the second quarter. --4 quarters of
:30:59. > :31:18.15 minutes. You can feel the tension around the
:31:19. > :31:24.arena. Anti-of Australian supporters here, and lots of union jacks
:31:25. > :31:55.around. -- plenty of Australian supporters.
:31:56. > :32:01.Great start by Great Britain. The intensity at which they have
:32:02. > :32:05.started, there is nothing worse than being in the Olympic Village and
:32:06. > :32:08.waiting for the last game of the day to start. So far so good for the
:32:09. > :32:15.girls. Rate to see them playing positively. -- great. Yes, they lost
:32:16. > :32:20.earlier today against an inspired Elton 's side. -- inspired Belgian
:32:21. > :32:32.side. Free hit to Australia. It is the
:32:33. > :32:37.direct play that is good from Team GB.
:32:38. > :32:44.To see Alex Danson so high in the field, being that opportunity early
:32:45. > :32:45.on, that is a positive sign. Good defence from Heather
:32:46. > :32:56.Richardson-Walsh. The ball plucked out of the air.
:32:57. > :33:02.Dangerously high. A free hit to Great Britain. Crista Cullen, the
:33:03. > :33:05.number five, took time out after Great Britain's bronze medal at the
:33:06. > :33:08.London Olympics, but she has returned to the squad is now, eager
:33:09. > :33:13.to improve on that third place four years ago.
:33:14. > :33:16.Great Britain with the lion's share of possession in the early stages
:33:17. > :33:27.here. It is almost a style you are used to
:33:28. > :33:31.seeing from Australia, putting the opposition under pressure right from
:33:32. > :33:34.the word go. They have struggled to get themselves into a pattern of way
:33:35. > :33:40.or any kind of routine. These are the kinds of things which, from a
:33:41. > :33:44.British perspective, give you hope. Jane-Anne Claxton down the right for
:33:45. > :33:47.Australia, looking for a way through to the edge of the circle. She is
:33:48. > :33:51.held up, flicking it over the top of the British stick. The pressure
:33:52. > :33:53.relieved, as Great Britain come away down the left-hand side, with Hannah
:33:54. > :34:07.Macleod. Australia looking dangerous here,
:34:08. > :34:11.Karri McMahon taking it all the way through. A hand away from Maddie
:34:12. > :34:29.Hinch. Free hit for Australia. Nice work!
:34:30. > :34:33.Good interception with the overhead. Sophie Bray is a post player in
:34:34. > :34:35.defending corners. She has a good fight for a ball, and makes that
:34:36. > :34:46.look easy. Jodie Kenny, trying to put the cross
:34:47. > :34:54.in. Kenny asking for it on the right.
:34:55. > :35:12.Kerstin Dwyer penetrating for Australia. A chance for a shot on
:35:13. > :35:19.goal, Hinch coming out sharply to save.
:35:20. > :35:40.Great Britain got away with that one.
:35:41. > :35:45.Fantastic play by Maddie Hinch, taking it on the face mask. She is
:35:46. > :35:48.so quick to close down the angles. She could be the key to Great
:35:49. > :35:59.Britain's success in this tournament.
:36:00. > :36:06.Great Britain under some pressure here, with just under nine minutes
:36:07. > :36:13.of the first period still to play. It is in!
:36:14. > :36:28.I think it is potentially dangerous play. The ball in from the wire,
:36:29. > :36:29.half touch. -- Dwyer. Australia are building some momentum and getting
:36:30. > :36:54.into their stride. Now Great Britain with a chance to
:36:55. > :37:00.put a little bit of pressure on the Australian defence. But that comes
:37:01. > :37:06.to nothing. Cagey start between the two sides, as they check each other
:37:07. > :37:10.out during these opening exchanges. I think it is two sides who know
:37:11. > :37:28.each other very well, and want to try to get some points on the board
:37:29. > :37:31.in their first game. Nance wearing the number one, normally it is the
:37:32. > :37:43.cup and who wears that. -- the captain. Emulating Jamie Dwyer.
:37:44. > :38:04.Twigg appealing for the free hit for Great Britain, but nothing given.
:38:05. > :38:18.Unsworth has done well. Maintains Great Britain's possession.
:38:19. > :38:25.Bit of a scramble, but Great Britain come a way with it. Opportunities
:38:26. > :38:32.here. Australia having to backtrack. Held up, Australia free hit. Lily
:38:33. > :38:38.Owsley, when she is on the ball, she has phenomenal pace. She is an 800
:38:39. > :38:44.metres and 1500 metres athlete, but was eventually picked up by England
:38:45. > :38:45.and Great Britain Hockey. Alex Danson stretched the field very
:38:46. > :38:53.well. Australia slow things down and
:38:54. > :39:37.switch sides. It is just that final ball for Great
:39:38. > :39:41.Britain that is letting them down. Sam Quek had won on the baseline,
:39:42. > :39:44.and I think it was Nick White he was unable to trap the ball. Positive
:39:45. > :39:57.signs, acting on the ball. Just over five minutes of the first
:39:58. > :40:02.period to play. Great Britain zero, Australia zero.
:40:03. > :40:18.This is the pool be match, between two old rivals. -- Pool B.
:40:19. > :40:27.Nice hit from Nicola White. Still British possession. The ball falls
:40:28. > :40:34.nicely for Helen Richardson-Walsh. Alex Danson with one of her familiar
:40:35. > :40:37.bursting runs towards the circle. Alex Johnson just about keeping Team
:40:38. > :40:44.GB in possession, but the green and gold are back to tidy up.
:40:45. > :40:48.Alex Danson can be such a dangerous playmaker for Great Britain. She can
:40:49. > :40:58.turn a match. Alex Johnson takes the shot, but it
:40:59. > :41:07.is kicked away by The Australian Golf Club, Rachael Lynch. -- the
:41:08. > :41:12.Australian goalkeeper. She is phenomenal on that site. Really good
:41:13. > :41:20.to see her on the ball, high up the field, getting a shot at goal.
:41:21. > :41:51.Tidied up by Web. The pass was less impressive.
:41:52. > :41:58.The first period has been exciting from the first whistle. Just over
:41:59. > :42:03.three minutes to play. Still no score. Great Britain zero, Australia
:42:04. > :42:40.zero. Georgina Morgan, all the way back.
:42:41. > :42:48.Good control, announced over the top of the Great Britain stick. --
:42:49. > :43:03.bounced over. They have appealed for a penalty
:43:04. > :43:10.corner. The umpire has nodded. Will there be a referral? Emily Smith
:43:11. > :43:18.knew straightaway that it looks like it came off Crista Cullen's leg. We
:43:19. > :43:22.are heading to the video umpire. Each side can have one video
:43:23. > :43:28.referral per match. If they get it right they keep it, if they get it
:43:29. > :43:35.wrong they lose it. Carol Mitchell is the video umpire. You can just
:43:36. > :43:39.see that it comes up off Crista Cullen's stick and onto her legs, it
:43:40. > :43:45.should not take Carol very long to make the decision.
:43:46. > :43:54.There was a foul by Team GB. It hit the body, penalty corner. Australia
:43:55. > :43:57.keep their referral. So it works out perfectly for Australia. They get
:43:58. > :44:04.the penalty corner and they keep their referral. Time for the Team GB
:44:05. > :44:08.girls to put on their face masks and protective gear and try to defend
:44:09. > :44:12.this penalty corner. The Australians certainly have their a team on top
:44:13. > :44:16.of the circle. Kate is a bosky will probably inject it, then they have
:44:17. > :44:21.got Jodie Kenny and Georgina Morgan off the top, number seven and number
:44:22. > :44:23.17. The likelihood is it will be Jodie Kenny who takes the first
:44:24. > :44:28.corner of the tournament. But Australia have got some routines.
:44:29. > :44:35.Yes, Casey Sablowski stepping over to deliver this penalty corner. She
:44:36. > :44:39.will inject, then there will be a trap and a possible drag flick
:44:40. > :44:44.attempt towards goal. Here we go, the first of the match. Just over
:44:45. > :44:49.two minutes to play. In Australia go into the break with a 1-0 lead? A
:44:50. > :44:54.brilliant, brave, defensive hit by Crista Cullen. But she is down on
:44:55. > :44:55.the deck, and play will need to be stopped, it is Crista Cullen took
:44:56. > :45:11.that hard. -- because. I do think there is a braver person
:45:12. > :45:20.than the number one runner. She is absolutely warned that one. -- worn.
:45:21. > :45:31.Crista Cullen is in a bit of trouble here. Bravely getting herself back
:45:32. > :45:43.to her feet. She may spend the rest of the time on the bench getting him
:45:44. > :45:46.attention. Arm or ribs? Hard as nails that one. Potentially boat. --
:45:47. > :46:02.both. Just under two minutes of the first
:46:03. > :46:12.quarter to play. Brilliant defence from Crista Cullen. Foyles the
:46:13. > :46:23.Australian penalty corner. -- foils. Scores remain level with 90 seconds
:46:24. > :46:36.to play. Australia fancy one more push towards the Great Britain goal.
:46:37. > :47:11.I know there hasn't been any goals but it has been absorbing first
:47:12. > :47:15.quarter. It hasn't been a overly cagey. From a British perspective,
:47:16. > :47:50.it's been positive. None given. The final play for the
:47:51. > :48:04.quarter. Four seconds left. The first period of play ends scoreless.
:48:05. > :48:07.Great Britain Neal, Australia nil. We will be back with Mel and Matt
:48:08. > :48:11.shortly for the start of the second quarter and in the meantime, welcome
:48:12. > :48:14.to Copacabana. I never thought I would be saying that unlike
:48:15. > :48:18.television. It is our wonderful studio here at the Rio Olympics.
:48:19. > :48:25.Let's look at what is going on elsewhere. In the women's singles
:48:26. > :48:29.tennis, Venus Williams is up against a Flipkens. The first set went to
:48:30. > :48:33.Venus but Flipkens is right back in it, winning the second set. That is
:48:34. > :48:38.available online for you right now. Elsewhere, there is a little bit of
:48:39. > :48:43.weightlifting going on as well. This is a big tournament for China
:48:44. > :48:47.because this is the women's 48 kg gold medal. China have won gold in
:48:48. > :48:53.this event for the past two Olympic Games and should continue that run
:48:54. > :49:03.to night. That is available on BBC Four. All these events are available
:49:04. > :49:07.online as well. A bit of table tennis, that is available on the Red
:49:08. > :49:09.Button. Many, many ways for you to keep in touch with the Olympics here
:49:10. > :49:21.in Rio. To help you make even more of your
:49:22. > :49:27.Rio 26 to Olympic Games, we have it all covered right here on the BBC.
:49:28. > :49:32.Alongside coverage on BBC One, BBC Four and Radio 5 live, you can
:49:33. > :49:46.access up to 24 live sports on the BBC Four website or by the Vic BBC
:49:47. > :49:54.sport out on mobile. -- BBC app. If that is not enough, you can download
:49:55. > :50:00.the BBC sport app. You can follow all your favourite sports.
:50:01. > :50:06.Red Button, online, we have the Olympics covered. We are just about
:50:07. > :50:16.to get the second quarter under way. Into the second quarter, Great
:50:17. > :50:20.Britain in red. Hitting from right-to-left. Alex Danson involved
:50:21. > :50:27.straightaway. No score yet. It has been an absorbing first period of
:50:28. > :50:32.play. Crista Cullen took one in the ribs as she attempted to defend a
:50:33. > :50:41.penalty corner. She is still on the bench. She is on the pitch at right
:50:42. > :50:45.half. I just assumed that having taken that hit, she would not be
:50:46. > :50:49.back for the second quarter but you are right, she is out there. From a
:50:50. > :50:58.British point of view, in good shape.
:50:59. > :51:10.It's good to see her out there. Obviously, she is tall and strong
:51:11. > :51:16.but gives an aerial threat. Talking about aerial threat, an aerial ball
:51:17. > :51:20.went into the stands. Not a very auspicious start for the second
:51:21. > :51:27.period for Australia. Great Britain in possession.
:51:28. > :51:33.The ball finds its way to Giselle Ansley.
:51:34. > :51:41.A chance of a break forward. Plenty of red shirts in the circle, hoping
:51:42. > :51:56.for a ball on foot. Still no penalty corner.
:51:57. > :52:02.That is a poor pass. They had a chance for a shot. Brooke Peris has
:52:03. > :52:16.had to double back. Emily Smith got caught in two minds
:52:17. > :52:18.on whether to take the shot or passed to Brooke Peris.
:52:19. > :52:20.Unfortunately for Australia, she made the wrong decision or took too
:52:21. > :52:36.long to make one. Great Britain into the circle,
:52:37. > :52:44.Australian feet flying everywhere at none for a penalty.
:52:45. > :52:59.Australia had a a few basic mistakes early in the second period.
:53:00. > :53:19.Australia with a chance to breathe. That wasn't so clever. They've
:53:20. > :53:22.regained possession. The coach must be having kittens seeing an aerial
:53:23. > :53:29.ball going pretty much across his own circle. Uncharacteristically
:53:30. > :53:43.casual and careless start to the second period by the Hockeyroos.
:53:44. > :53:47.Great Britain camped out in Australia's half of the field now.
:53:48. > :54:06.Can they get some reward? Australia breaking through into
:54:07. > :54:23.space. Lots of pace. Maddie Hinch of her line. Grace
:54:24. > :54:28.Stewart penetrating all the way, forcing Maddie Hinch of her line.
:54:29. > :54:59.Great goalkeeping. Another brave bit of defending from
:55:00. > :55:03.Great Britain. It was Laura Unsworth they got in the way. She is OK, and
:55:04. > :55:10.shrugs it off. She gets on with the game. This is the opportunity for
:55:11. > :55:14.Grace Stewart. Grace Stewart, just as she comes towards Hollie Webb,
:55:15. > :55:18.she manages to get the ball up in the air. As you said, Maddie Hinch,
:55:19. > :55:20.so quick per goal line. She smothers any opportunity for great Jewett and
:55:21. > :55:29.the Hockeyroos. -- Grace Stewart. Final match of the hockey tournament
:55:30. > :55:47.today. Great Britain will need to recover.
:55:48. > :55:55.A penalty corner for Australia. They are all a bit confused with the
:55:56. > :55:58.stick dropped onto the turf. A result, the ball hit the British
:55:59. > :56:08.thought. Australia will get a penalty corner.
:56:09. > :56:20.Unfortunately for Giselle Ansley, Australia managed to put the ball
:56:21. > :56:23.onto her foot for a penalty corner. Crista Cullen is on the field so she
:56:24. > :56:27.will be running the ball down once again. Casey Sablowski will inject
:56:28. > :56:46.for Australia. It was going wide anyway but I don't
:56:47. > :56:56.Lyon her from not taking any chances. --I don't blame her.
:56:57. > :56:59.Crista Cullen was their first again after taking one in the ribs after
:57:00. > :57:16.the first penalty corner. Georgie Twigg bundled off the ball.
:57:17. > :57:44.She would have got the free hit. Out of play. Too close to the
:57:45. > :58:03.sideline. Helen Richardson-Walsh to Susannah
:58:04. > :58:07.Townsend. A shot towards goal. A third party
:58:08. > :58:24.obstruction. You have to play what the umpire
:58:25. > :58:25.sees. I'm not 100% sure for that. Unfortunately for Great Britain,
:58:26. > :58:55.that was almost a goal. No penalty corner given. Helen
:58:56. > :59:00.Richardson-Walsh has gone hobbling over to the bench. Hopefully she
:59:01. > :59:02.hasn't done too much damage. The doctor and physio are with her
:59:03. > :59:09.already. Control from Unsworth. An excellent
:59:10. > :59:37.first half. A spectacular push away by the Great
:59:38. > :59:40.Britain goalkeeper Maddie Hinch. A fantastic touch from Mariah
:59:41. > :59:56.Williams, someone of 19 years of age.
:59:57. > :00:02.So far Great Britain able to absorb all the Australian pressure that has
:00:03. > :00:13.come their way, including the two penalty corners.
:00:14. > :00:18.Great Britain still in possession. They will have to retake that one.
:00:19. > :00:43.Free hit and not in the correct way. Back they go.
:00:44. > :01:12.play for Great Britain. Can they get the reward?
:01:13. > :01:16.Good ball in by Kate Richardson-Walsh. Just needed the
:01:17. > :01:19.centre-forward to post up on the edge of the circle. It is a
:01:20. > :01:27.nightmare for an Australian defender to try to track the ball. All Great
:01:28. > :01:33.Britain at the moment. At China's foray shot on goal! Great Britain,
:01:34. > :01:40.first to score! Lily Owsley hits the target from close range.
:01:41. > :01:49.The scoreboard shows Australia one, Great Britain zero, but that will
:01:50. > :01:55.shortly be corrected. It is Great Britain one, Australian ill,
:01:56. > :01:59.courtesy of Lily Owsley. Great ball in by Hollie Webb, and a touch from
:02:00. > :02:03.Shona McCallin just inside the pretty five. That is a cool, calm
:02:04. > :02:07.finish by Lily Owsley. You can see what it means to the team. Rachael
:02:08. > :02:10.Lynch has been a spectator for most of the first half, and is now
:02:11. > :02:16.picking the ball out of the back of the net. Just over four minutes
:02:17. > :02:20.until half-time. Cool head is required from Great Britain. They
:02:21. > :02:31.would love to go into the extended break with the one goal advantage.
:02:32. > :02:38.Penalty corner, straight after the goal was scored. Australia back on
:02:39. > :02:44.the attack. They get the reward, their third penalty corner of the
:02:45. > :02:48.game. I think she has a fair point. It is a fantastic piece of skill by
:02:49. > :02:54.Emily Smith. As harsh as this is going to sound, Kate
:02:55. > :02:57.Richardson-Walsh has been done by skill. She has not liberally taken
:02:58. > :03:01.Smith out of the game, but it was the Miss trap by Sam Quek that led
:03:02. > :03:04.for that opportunity for Australia. It is an opportunity for them to get
:03:05. > :03:09.back on level terms almost immediately. Third penalty corner of
:03:10. > :03:15.the match for the hockey ruse. -- Hockeyroos. They failed to convert
:03:16. > :03:21.on the two tedious attempts. It will be Casey Sablowski to inject again.
:03:22. > :03:30.Here it goes. Australia looking for a way through. Off the post and out!
:03:31. > :03:31.Goodness me. So close. Georgina Morgan's drag flick hit the
:03:32. > :03:40.woodwork. Going for a different option with
:03:41. > :03:44.Georgina Morgan, but Hannah Macleod does well to cover one side. But
:03:45. > :03:46.that has absolutely gone flying. I am not sure Laura Unsworth got a
:03:47. > :03:55.touch on that as the Post player. Great Britain need to hold
:03:56. > :04:02.possession, with three and a half minutes until half-time. Australia
:04:03. > :04:03.have it, though. They will throw everything at the final minutes of
:04:04. > :04:21.this first half. Too strong. Adam Cummins Burke in the shot. He
:04:22. > :04:25.has got his work cut out at half-time to get his Australian team
:04:26. > :04:27.firing, because he will be the first to admit they have not started the
:04:28. > :04:32.tournament the way they would want to. Yes, there is a long way to go,
:04:33. > :04:36.we all mode that, but it is important to get points on the board
:04:37. > :04:45.as soon as you possibly can. -- we all know that. Great Britain come
:04:46. > :04:47.again. Not content with a 1-0 lead at half-time, they want to add to
:04:48. > :04:57.that and make it two. The umpire explaining her decision.
:04:58. > :05:02.She wants its taken from outside the 23 metre line. That means Hollie
:05:03. > :05:20.Webb can play the ball directly into the circle if she wants to.
:05:21. > :05:27.A 2-0 lead at half-time would be a magnificent effort from Great
:05:28. > :05:32.Britain. As they try to force the way through, Australia get
:05:33. > :05:35.possession. So important for Great Britain that they go in at half-time
:05:36. > :05:39.with the lead. Danny Kerry has got his tactics spot on today. The girls
:05:40. > :05:43.have executed everything he has wanted from them. What he will not
:05:44. > :05:52.be satisfied. He will want more from the squad in the second half. Not
:05:53. > :05:58.the cleanest hit. Sam Quek with a chance to leave that, and let a view
:05:59. > :06:08.second stick away off the clock. --A view second is tick away. --
:06:09. > :06:13.REFEREE:. Australia have more than a meet its
:06:14. > :06:33.to finish the half with a flourish. Inside the final 60 seconds.
:06:34. > :06:35.Australia go all the way back to Georgina Morgan, who came closest of
:06:36. > :06:42.all in this first half for Australia. Great Britain clear their
:06:43. > :06:46.lines once again. They need to maintain possession. It will be a
:06:47. > :07:14.British it from the sideline. Good hustling. Good tackling. And
:07:15. > :07:21.the countdown for the final ten seconds began. The team know that it
:07:22. > :07:27.is nearly over. (SIREN BLARES). There it is, the end of an absorbing
:07:28. > :07:31.first half, which has seen Australia take three penalty corners, but with
:07:32. > :07:37.no reward. And the Great Britain goal coming courtesy of Lily Owsley.
:07:38. > :07:43.It has been a fantastic first half. There is more to come. At the break,
:07:44. > :07:48.Great Britain lead Australia by 1-0. Well, we did tell you which would it
:07:49. > :07:53.worth staying up for. Well done to Team GB. A fantastic start for them.
:07:54. > :07:57.Liao 's Lee is one of the sport's rising stars, winning an award just
:07:58. > :08:03.a few months ago. -- Lily Owsley. She plays her hockey for Birmingham.
:08:04. > :08:19.After this, it is time to dive into the pool.
:08:20. > :08:34.So, this is how we are lining up this evening. The men's 400 metres
:08:35. > :08:42.individual medley final. Max Litchfield taking part in that, that
:08:43. > :08:48.is about two o'clock. The women's 100 metres butterfly, that is at a
:08:49. > :08:53.quarter past. Then the women's 100 metres butterfly semi-final, the
:08:54. > :08:58.second one. Then the men's 400 metres freestyle, where James Guy is
:08:59. > :09:02.hoping for glory tonight. At 2:49am the women's 400 metres individual
:09:03. > :09:05.medley. Keep your eyes out for Hannah Miley and Aimee Wilmott. Two
:09:06. > :09:12.more semifinals in the men's stroke, when we will see Ross Murdoch. Van
:09:13. > :09:17.Adam Peaty in the men's 100 metres breast Rick second semi-final. Then
:09:18. > :09:20.the women's 400 metres freestyle semi-final. We now turn our
:09:21. > :09:24.attention to the men's gymnastics. There have been lots of events
:09:25. > :09:29.today, both in the team and the individual. David McDaid has been
:09:30. > :09:36.keeping an eye on that for us. Let us begin with the big names. How did
:09:37. > :09:40.Max Whitlock do today? Max Whitlock is simply Great Britain's gymnastics
:09:41. > :09:43.superstar these days. He is a world champion, he established that in
:09:44. > :09:47.Glasgow last November, and he came here with hopes of the first-ever
:09:48. > :09:50.British gymnastics gold medal. Well, today he was part of that team
:09:51. > :09:55.qualifying, as well as the individual apparatus, fine. He began
:09:56. > :10:01.very well on the floor. He got four scores of 15. Then into the pommel
:10:02. > :10:05.horse. We really hope that him all the Smith can get the first of the
:10:06. > :10:09.Olympic men's gold. Whitlock did very well, he got a score of 15.8 to
:10:10. > :10:14.leave him top in that qualification standings. So he is looking in
:10:15. > :10:19.really good shape to get that first ever gold. He did have a couple of
:10:20. > :10:24.slipups later on in his routine on the vault, where he got below 14.
:10:25. > :10:29.Then he had a fall in high bar. That left him 12th in the all-round
:10:30. > :10:34.standings. Certainly something to work on for him. What about the rest
:10:35. > :10:39.of the team and Lewis Smith, who we saw at the end of that routine?
:10:40. > :10:42.Well, Whitlock at 15.8 to top the pommel horse standing, Lewis Smith
:10:43. > :10:47.was only one tenth behind him to get 15.7. It is really between Lewis
:10:48. > :10:52.Smith and Max Whitlock, whipping, for the gold-medal. Hopefully it
:10:53. > :10:57.will be a British 1-2. He only had the one job to do and he certainly
:10:58. > :11:01.did it, helping the team. Elsewhere we had seven medal chances in the
:11:02. > :11:04.individual and packed as finals, because Max Whitlock is joined by
:11:05. > :11:09.Nile Wilson, who, fired second top 40 high bar. Whitlock goes into the
:11:10. > :11:16.floor final alongside Kristian Thomas. So there are seven chances
:11:17. > :11:19.for an individual medal here. Obviously in Glasgow in the
:11:20. > :11:23.Commonwealth Games, gymnastics, so many fantastic formance is from the
:11:24. > :11:30.home nations. What about the team events? -- fantastic performances.
:11:31. > :11:34.Well, Great Britain qualified 15th, which is a good achievement in
:11:35. > :11:37.itself. What we have seen here tonight is that the other nations
:11:38. > :11:39.that Great Britain beat to that silver championship medal in
:11:40. > :11:44.Glasgow, such as China and the United States, have really improved
:11:45. > :11:49.their Games and is November. We had China topping the standings, USA
:11:50. > :11:53.second, and then Great Britain. Great Britain have some work to do,
:11:54. > :11:57.let's make no mistake about that. But there are areas that they can
:11:58. > :12:03.put right on Monday. All they have to do is get back onto the tear, and
:12:04. > :12:05.do what they did, maybe a little bit better, and perhaps another Olympic
:12:06. > :12:12.team medal can be bears. David, thank you. Did to talk to you.
:12:13. > :12:16.The women's gets away -- gets under way tomorrow. Let's remind you of
:12:17. > :12:25.today's big stories here at Rio 2016. Adam Peaty sets the world
:12:26. > :12:32.record in the 100 metres breast stroke each. His semi-final is
:12:33. > :12:35.coming up later. Not to be for Great Britain in the men's Road race.
:12:36. > :12:39.Correct Thomas crashing out and Chris Froome never really in it. The
:12:40. > :12:48.race was won by Belgium's Greg Van Abernant. Well done to him. Great
:12:49. > :12:57.Britain's men's hockey team, thrashed bite Welch, by 4-1. --
:12:58. > :13:00.thrashed by Belgium. American Jimmy Thrasher won the first gold medal of
:13:01. > :13:10.the Olympic teams, with a surprise victory in the women's ten metres
:13:11. > :13:13.air rifle. And the Brazilian Philippe Woo won silver, the first
:13:14. > :13:22.medal for the hosts in the men's ten metres at pistol. -- air pistol.
:13:23. > :13:25.Before we return to the hockey, let's show you what life is like in
:13:26. > :13:30.the Olympic Village. So many athletes living side by side.
:13:31. > :13:37.Here we are at the athletes village. There are about 10,000 athletes from
:13:38. > :13:41.more than 200 countries around the world. This is their first step to
:13:42. > :13:45.winning an elliptic gold, not least for our friends Team GB. Let's see
:13:46. > :14:06.how they are getting on. The Rugby sevens girls are in the
:14:07. > :14:09.house. They seem to be in good spirits. Why wouldn't they be? They
:14:10. > :14:16.have got union jack deckchairs down here. Mark, I love what you've done
:14:17. > :14:19.with the place. The great thing about an Olympic Village is that you
:14:20. > :14:24.pretty much get a bare space and it is your allotment to do what you
:14:25. > :14:31.like with. Who let Mark Gleghorn in? A purveyor, give us a wave, guys.
:14:32. > :14:35.Haven't you got work to do? We will see you down here in a jiffy.
:14:36. > :14:42.Spirits seem good. Yes, it is a great buzz. Everybody is excited and
:14:43. > :14:48.really pleased to be here. Welcome to Rio. How are you finding it? It
:14:49. > :14:51.is great, the place is amazing. We are getting started in 80 days and
:14:52. > :14:58.it has come really quickly. We are looking forward to it. Could to see
:14:59. > :15:01.it. -- good to see you. What is great about the Village is that if
:15:02. > :15:07.you ever get lost, just follow the flags. Look at it, we have Canada
:15:08. > :15:10.back there, looking loud and proud. Over here we have got the
:15:11. > :15:14.Scandinavian quarter, including Denmark, Finland and Sweden, who
:15:15. > :15:20.were very welcoming as we walked past. Over here we have got Portugal
:15:21. > :15:27.download, and up top, Slovenia, feeling the love. Very good.
:15:28. > :15:50.That is lovely. This is a sport that will be used quite a lot. We have
:15:51. > :15:55.set it up with 12 to 15 beds. We would have of baht of treatment
:15:56. > :16:03.during the day as we get into the games. All sports are encouraged to
:16:04. > :16:10.use it. This way. Look! There is a person hiding in here! You never
:16:11. > :16:16.know who you will find. Hello? Is there they are. Good to see you. I
:16:17. > :16:24.have to ask you about these guys. Look at them. Your team. It's a
:16:25. > :16:28.tight group, isn't it? It's great. We train and compete together. We
:16:29. > :16:33.have done for years. This is our sixth trip out here. As the Olympic
:16:34. > :16:42.squad so we have been bonding really well. So far we haven't had any
:16:43. > :16:52.major issues. Here we are. I have got two, haven't I? It's just been
:16:53. > :17:02.changed today. And now, tainted. If it's anything like London,... Team
:17:03. > :17:08.GB are going to be taking their sheets home with them. We shall see.
:17:09. > :17:11.There you have it, the village in all its glory. By the sounds of it,
:17:12. > :17:21.according to the athletes, Team GB is definitely ready.
:17:22. > :17:25.It is a terrific Olympic Village. It's a great Olympic Games. Let's go
:17:26. > :17:31.back to our commentary team. Intercepted by Great Britain but
:17:32. > :18:57.clutched back by Australia. What Great Britain have done well
:18:58. > :19:00.this evening is that they have protected the middle of the field.
:19:01. > :19:04.They are more than happy for Australia to have the ball out wide.
:19:05. > :19:07.They can use the sideline as another defender.
:19:08. > :19:21.Australia have the pace but not the cleanest cross. A bit of a let off.
:19:22. > :19:26.Kathryn Slattery again. She is a world-class, old school forward,
:19:27. > :19:30.better going towards closer goal. Get those tips and touches. Another
:19:31. > :19:38.youngster that has a lot to learn in the game. She was Australia's top
:19:39. > :19:42.goalscorer in the Australian stroke the championship. -- in the Trophy
:19:43. > :19:47.championship. Australia in the corner. Looking for
:19:48. > :20:03.a way out. Kate Richardson-Walsh involved in a
:20:04. > :20:07.dialogue with the umpire about what she can and can't hear. A bit quiet
:20:08. > :20:14.in here this afternoon. Australian fans certainly aren't making much
:20:15. > :20:22.noise. 8000 capacity in this stadium. A penalty corner. First of
:20:23. > :20:30.the second half. It has gone Australia's way. It will be there
:20:31. > :20:31.for. They have yet to strike with any of their previous three. A
:20:32. > :20:48.huddle. Great Britain just switched off
:20:49. > :20:54.there. Laura Unsworth thought the ball may not have hit her foot but
:20:55. > :21:05.from the replay, not so. Australia's best chance to equalise! A great
:21:06. > :21:13.goal. Put away by Georgina Morgan who hit the post in the first half.
:21:14. > :21:19.She finds the target early in the second half. This could be what puts
:21:20. > :21:32.Australia in the medal chances. Georgina Morgan, as we said, she hit
:21:33. > :21:52.the post in the first half. This one steps up.
:21:53. > :22:10.You can't really read too much into it. When Great Britain scored their
:22:11. > :22:13.first goal, that was exactly the same face that the coach had. There
:22:14. > :22:14.is still a long way to go. The gigabits girls have been playing
:22:15. > :23:20.really well. -- the gigabits goals. Great Britain get away with it, it
:23:21. > :23:42.was often Australian sport. -- it was off and an Australian foot.
:23:43. > :23:49.Australia push towards the circle. It is tidied up.
:23:50. > :24:01.Good work for Great Britain. Into space. So much ground covered by
:24:02. > :24:04.Giselle Ansley. She tidies things up, slows things down. Kate
:24:05. > :24:24.Richardson-Walsh. Maddie Hinch able to boot it away to
:24:25. > :24:38.save it. I am not really sure why the corner
:24:39. > :24:52.has been given. Lots of shrugging shoulders around
:24:53. > :24:56.the commentary positions here. Nobody is really sure about this. It
:24:57. > :25:08.was probably hinge kicking the ball away and it hit an Australian
:25:09. > :25:09.athlete. -- Hinch. The last time they got a penalty corner, Morgan
:25:10. > :25:24.was able to hit the target. Pushed wide. Off an Australian
:25:25. > :25:29.stick. As far as Great Britain is concerned, the danger is over,
:25:30. > :25:38.temporarily at least. Great corner defence. Fortunately for Team GB,
:25:39. > :25:41.Georgina Morgan was off the pitch. It makes it easier for the defensive
:25:42. > :25:46.team. Good pace from great return down the
:25:47. > :26:11.left. -- Great Britain. Eight minutes of the third period to
:26:12. > :26:15.play. Australia have stolen it. Terrific defence. The captain, Kate
:26:16. > :26:26.Richardson-Walsh. The chance of a British opportunity.
:26:27. > :26:36.Snuffed out by Australia who tracked back in numbers. Australia have
:26:37. > :26:41.upped their intensity. The passing of Great Britain in the first half
:26:42. > :26:45.was brilliant. Stick to stick, fast. Now they just seem to be getting the
:26:46. > :26:46.hurry up a little bit by Australia and as a result, players are
:26:47. > :26:50.beginning to run with the ball more. Crista Cullen. Crista Cullen having
:26:51. > :27:39.to do some more work. A bit of a high ball. Great Britain
:27:40. > :27:46.with a free hit. Shoulder charged off the ball. Penalty corner Great
:27:47. > :27:50.Britain! They got one at last! To be fair to the umpire, it's exactly the
:27:51. > :28:12.same as Kate Richardson-Walsh and Emily Smith.
:28:13. > :28:18.For me, that is no different to Kate Richardson-Walsh. In fact, that is
:28:19. > :28:27.more dangerous. She gets past Madonna Blyth, she gets a shot at
:28:28. > :28:28.goal. UMPIRE: I have no reason to change
:28:29. > :28:32.my decision. No more video referrals. Almost as
:28:33. > :28:54.silly referral by Australia. Georgie Twigg will inject the ball
:28:55. > :28:59.for Great Britain. They're lined up. Helen
:29:00. > :29:18.Richardson-Walsh is there. Jodie Kenny makes a fantastic save
:29:19. > :29:27.as the post player. Looks as though she stepped in front of Lynch.
:29:28. > :29:36.Player down. A crack of ball on head. Crista Cullen in the wars
:29:37. > :29:41.again. A yellow flag! It is for Bone of Australia.
:29:42. > :29:54.It is just dangerous. Edwina Claire Bone. She will miss the rest of the
:29:55. > :29:58.third quarter. No penalty corners for the first half and two in quick
:29:59. > :30:21.succession for the second. Lots of discussion between players
:30:22. > :30:43.and umpire. UMPIRE: What are you asking for? Are
:30:44. > :30:47.you asking for a corner? I'll ask. Great Britain heading upstairs. Team
:30:48. > :30:54.video referral for Great Britain. They think they deserve another
:30:55. > :31:02.penalty corner. It is off and Australian sport. She feels it is an
:31:03. > :31:12.obstruction on Casey Sablowski. It worked out well for Great
:31:13. > :31:26.Britain. upheld. They keep their video
:31:27. > :31:34.referral, and they have a penalty corner.
:31:35. > :31:40.What a lively second-half this has been so far. Georgie Twigg takes up
:31:41. > :31:43.the second position, and the Australians get booted and suited,
:31:44. > :31:47.ready to try to defend this. Could be third time lucky for Great
:31:48. > :31:51.Britain. I think they need to look for a variation, rather than
:31:52. > :31:59.straight off the top. APPLAUSE. Saved, this time. No luck
:32:00. > :32:01.in the three penalty corner attempts for Great Britain. They still have
:32:02. > :32:12.possession. A fairly routine save for Rachael
:32:13. > :32:16.Lynch. Crista Cullen tried to disguise it with her body and aim as
:32:17. > :32:17.though she was looking to go to the gloves side, and roll it stick side,
:32:18. > :32:34.but it didn't come off for her. Kate Richardson-Walsh. Crista
:32:35. > :32:36.Cullen. Off the Australian stick, and over the backline, just in front
:32:37. > :32:51.of Helen Richardson-Walsh. Georgie Twigg trying to put a
:32:52. > :32:54.Pennetta to the shot through. But Kate Richardson-Walsh runs the
:32:55. > :33:00.entire length of the pitch to pick this one up.
:33:01. > :33:07.This really is an opportunity for Great Britain to put Australia under
:33:08. > :33:16.pressure with Edwina Bones out on the side.
:33:17. > :33:25.11 versus ten at the moment. Australia with a chance to put
:33:26. > :33:32.pressure on Great Britain's hole here. -- goal. Out of play, off the
:33:33. > :33:49.British stick. This is dangerous from Australia!
:33:50. > :33:59.Backhand shot finds the goal. No. Claxton, with the attempt. Fantastic
:34:00. > :34:02.skills. She almost gets a double clutch. Otherwise I think that would
:34:03. > :34:06.have been going for the goal. Hinch is there, out of the corner of
:34:07. > :34:18.Claxton's die, she would have seen Hinch coming at Perth. -- Claxton's
:34:19. > :34:33.eye. Desperate measures from both teams.
:34:34. > :34:38.Scrapping on the turf. Hasn't got the fluidity of the first half from
:34:39. > :34:44.either side, really. Yes, it has all got a bit anxious.
:34:45. > :34:49.Ambitious stuff from Kate Richardson-Walsh, looking for Alex
:34:50. > :34:57.Danson. But she couldn't deal with the pace of that long past.
:34:58. > :35:05.Great Britain still have one player over, remember. Into the circle.
:35:06. > :35:09.A quality piece of skill by Sophie Bray to lift the ball over the
:35:10. > :35:28.Australian defender's stick. Australia will not do any damage
:35:29. > :35:33.here, but they have kept the ball in Australia's carved during the time
:35:34. > :35:55.Edwina is on the bench. -- Australia's half.
:35:56. > :36:06.Dad on goal, must score! Alex Danson! A backhand goal from Alex
:36:07. > :36:12.Danson, an absolute beauty! Danson does what she does best. I don't
:36:13. > :36:17.know about you, but I thought she had missed the opportunity. Susannah
:36:18. > :36:22.Townsend does really well. A great ball by Laura Unsworth here, and
:36:23. > :36:26.left by Shona McCallin. I thought Alex Danson was just going to roll
:36:27. > :36:30.her in. Didn't quite get the touch she wanted, but onto that backhand,
:36:31. > :36:43.she doesn't miss anything on that. An absolute all that. -- bullet.
:36:44. > :36:45.Well done, Team GB. Alex Danson's 90th goal for her country, in her
:36:46. > :37:05.256th appearance. A problem with the clocks, it took a
:37:06. > :37:08.few seconds to restart. Just a couple of minutes of the third
:37:09. > :37:15.period to play. Australia trailed 2-1. Looking for the penalty corner,
:37:16. > :37:20.but none given. So important that they hold this lead into three
:37:21. > :37:22.quarters time. Real concentration needed for just over a minute and a
:37:23. > :37:48.half. Australia keep the pressure up. Held
:37:49. > :37:54.up just on the edge of the circle. Must be cleared for Great Britain as
:37:55. > :38:04.they tried to escape from the Australian attack.
:38:05. > :38:09.Into the last 60 seconds of the third period. Great Britain two,
:38:10. > :38:32.Australia one. Australia attempting one final
:38:33. > :38:45.assault on Great Britain's goal. Kenny, off the gigabits stick and
:38:46. > :38:49.away. -- the Team GB stick. Surely Great Britain will just do in up to
:38:50. > :38:53.keep this one goal lead, heading into the break at the end of the
:38:54. > :38:59.third period, with a final 15 minutes segment to come. The last
:39:00. > :39:05.ten seconds of the quarter. By way and behind. Great Britain in front,
:39:06. > :39:08.courtesy of a brilliant backhand goal from Alex Danson. (SIREN
:39:09. > :39:15.BLARES). Great Britain two, Australia one.
:39:16. > :39:19.A big final quarter coming up. A fantastic goal from Alex Danson, act
:39:20. > :39:22.for the final quarter very shortly. We will bring you up to date with
:39:23. > :39:27.what has been happening in weightlifting. A bit of an upset in
:39:28. > :39:32.this, the latest gold medal to be awarded tonight in weightlifting in
:39:33. > :39:33.the women's 48 kg. A mammoth final of the over two hours and multiple
:39:34. > :39:46.lifts. And the Golem -- gold medal going to
:39:47. > :39:57.Thailand. The 21-year-old lifted 92 kg in the snatch.
:39:58. > :40:07.And then 108 kilograms Indy clean and jerk for a combined total of 200
:40:08. > :40:10.kilograms. Fantastic, look at that. That is an upset, because China have
:40:11. > :40:17.won gold in that event in the last two Olympics. Well done to her. Paul
:40:18. > :40:21.Genco of Team GB through to the men's singles of table tennis. He
:40:22. > :40:27.beat Alexandre Karas a bitch of Serbia. He lost the first game
:40:28. > :40:34.before coming back strongly to progress. Well done to Paul
:40:35. > :40:38.Drinkhall. The wonderful thing about being on this remarkable beaches
:40:39. > :40:40.that even at this time there are still people playing sport here.
:40:41. > :40:44.There are some children playing a bit of beach football today. And
:40:45. > :40:49.further down Copacabana, you might be able to see the Beach Volleyball
:40:50. > :40:53.Arena. That is it, it is lit up right at the end of the beach. If
:40:54. > :40:57.there is a better sporting venue on the planet right now I would love to
:40:58. > :40:59.see it. I popped down there this morning to watch Italy, the first
:41:00. > :41:05.match in the men's volleyball. Italy against Austria. This is what is
:41:06. > :41:10.happening right now. You can watch this, it is available on BBC Four,
:41:11. > :41:14.and also online. Poland is taking on Germany. Meanwhile, back at the
:41:15. > :41:19.hockey centre, we return to the final quarter.
:41:20. > :41:26.Which has just got under way. Great Britain two, Australia one. 15
:41:27. > :41:35.minutes of intense hockey to play in this will be match between the two
:41:36. > :41:37.great rivals. -- Pool B. Australia are the Commonwealth champions, and
:41:38. > :41:42.Great Britain winning the Olympic bronze medal in London 2012.
:41:43. > :41:53.Australia three times Olympic champions. 1988, 1996 and 2000.
:41:54. > :42:06.Great Britain's women have never won an Olympic gold.
:42:07. > :42:12.Most recently the women took the bronze in London. But they showed
:42:13. > :42:17.real form last year in the global championships. Coming down from 2-0
:42:18. > :42:22.to beat the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout. And they
:42:23. > :42:26.are ahead of mighty Australia here, on day one of the Olympic hockey
:42:27. > :42:29.tournament. Courtesy of two great goals, one from Lily Owsley and the
:42:30. > :42:42.second from Alex Danson. Deliberate yellow card. Edwina
:42:43. > :42:47.Claire Bone again. Onto the bench for the second time. Bone has had
:42:48. > :42:52.more time sitting down then she has had on her feet in this match.
:42:53. > :43:16.Another five-minute sin bin infringement for an Edwina Barton.
:43:17. > :43:19.-- Edwina Bone. When you start to see Australia losing their
:43:20. > :43:23.discipline it is another thing that gives you confidence. Asking for a
:43:24. > :43:30.penalty corner, the umpire having none of it. I think it is a tough
:43:31. > :43:33.one for Great Britain now, Australia would add Edwina Bone on the
:43:34. > :43:38.sideline down to ten players again. Do you push for the third goal, or
:43:39. > :43:42.do you keep it? Do you keep the ball around the back, keep passing key
:43:43. > :43:50.players? Or do you settle for 2-1 and try to wait it out? A third goal
:43:51. > :43:56.would probably win it the Great Britain now.
:43:57. > :44:06.The Australian coach looks a little impatient. Adam Commens sets high
:44:07. > :44:09.standards for his team 's. He is an axe Kookaburra himself, so he knows
:44:10. > :44:17.what it is like to play on the international stage. --
:44:18. > :44:25.ex-Kookaburra. The Kookaburra is being the nickname of the men's
:44:26. > :44:33.team. The ladies are known as the Hockeyroos. And they are currently
:44:34. > :44:44.trailing Team GB by one goal. They are one player down.
:44:45. > :44:49.Great Britain's men did not have a good start to their tournament
:44:50. > :44:58.earlier today, beaten 4-1 by Belgium on this pitch. They started at
:44:59. > :45:00.12:30pm in the searing heat. It was 36 degrees pitch site. It is still
:45:01. > :45:12.warm now, but much more pleasant. Kenny, that is a good pass. All the
:45:13. > :45:13.way across the field on the diagonal, to Emily Smith, who holds
:45:14. > :45:47.it up. Bouncing off the shin of Emily
:45:48. > :46:01.Smith, and out of play. Crista Cullen goes over to maybe launch one
:46:02. > :46:07.Hy Mac. -- launch one high. That was risky by Crista Cullen. What was she
:46:08. > :46:12.thinking? I have no idea. Sam Quek is in acres of space on the
:46:13. > :46:16.right-hand side. Hinch, off her line, is probably the saving grace.
:46:17. > :46:18.All Crista Cullen needed to do was exactly what she did, and aerial
:46:19. > :46:28.ball, but down the line. A good opportunity for Great
:46:29. > :46:53.Britain. I think Lily Owsley was caught in
:46:54. > :46:54.two minds. In training, early Owsley would have just smashed it into that
:46:55. > :47:03.back of the net. -- Lily Owsley. Great Britain lead Australia by two
:47:04. > :47:27.goals to one. That is more like it. Just making
:47:28. > :48:08.Australia work for it. Great Britain making a few too many
:48:09. > :48:13.casual errors in this final period. First from Crista Cullen, the most
:48:14. > :48:15.notable one, almost letting in the Australian forwards for a call. --
:48:16. > :48:19.goal. Now they can settle things down with
:48:20. > :48:38.Captain Kate Richardson-Walsh. So important that when Great Britain
:48:39. > :48:43.wins the ball that they keep possession. They just keep giving it
:48:44. > :48:49.back to Australia. As a result, the Great Britain forward to having to
:48:50. > :48:56.come further and further up. It is all the way down field. A few more
:48:57. > :49:07.seconds taken off the clock for great written. Daish Great Britain.
:49:08. > :50:01.Trying to snuff out the Australian defence. The whistle had already
:50:02. > :50:07.gone otherwise Claxton may have been in trouble. She will get spoken to
:50:08. > :50:10.anyway. UMPIRE: When I blow my whistle, you
:50:11. > :50:32.have to stop play. Is so important that Team GB keep
:50:33. > :50:37.their heads calm. Know that the clock is ticking down. Stick to your
:50:38. > :50:40.gameplan, keep the ball wide. No need to do anything silly, try
:50:41. > :50:49.anything special. Good pass. Sadly, a little too deep for Helen
:50:50. > :51:09.Richardson-Walsh. The Australian supporters are trying
:51:10. > :51:36.to raise the morale of their players. Here they come.
:51:37. > :51:54.It's all getting a little bit frantic. You can hear the voices of
:51:55. > :52:04.the players. Susannah Townsend performing a
:52:05. > :52:20.clever juggling act. Whenever Danson is on the ball,
:52:21. > :52:26.there is an air of anticipation that she might produce a bit of magic to
:52:27. > :52:42.switch the scoreline again. Four minutes to play.
:52:43. > :52:52.It's just much better from great Britain.
:52:53. > :52:59.Putting the Australian defence under pressure. If you can turn the ball
:53:00. > :53:03.over higher up the field you have less distance to run. Australia
:53:04. > :53:08.coming forward. Once again, the Australia attack is
:53:09. > :53:21.snuffed out. Another minute taken off the clock.
:53:22. > :53:24.An aerial ball all the way back. Taken out of the air. Good control
:53:25. > :53:39.this time from Australia. Too strong. Out of play. Those of
:53:40. > :53:43.the things I find uncharacteristic by Australia. Simple passes, really,
:53:44. > :53:50.they should be going stick to stick without any problems at all.
:53:51. > :53:59.Sam Quek confused as to the whereabouts of the ball. What a
:54:00. > :54:04.save! Maddie Hinch denying Brooke Peris. Look Paris, brilliant
:54:05. > :54:17.turnover. -- Brooke Peris. Maddie Hinch has been on fire
:54:18. > :54:50.tonight. A penalty corner for Australia! One
:54:51. > :54:54.minute and 49 seconds on the clock. It is almost a bully -ish tactics
:54:55. > :55:01.from Australia. Mariah Williams gets the ball on Ainsley again. I thought
:55:02. > :55:05.they might have been a foul on Kate Richardson-Walsh but she didn't
:55:06. > :55:12.refer it. Georgina Morgan is on the field that is corner with Jodie
:55:13. > :55:19.Kenny. -- on the field for this corner.
:55:20. > :55:27.Kathryn Slattery to reject for Australia. Australia poised.
:55:28. > :55:35.Behind. Off target that time, Australia. I think they were looking
:55:36. > :55:42.for a deflection by Gabi Nance on the far right hand side. She has got
:55:43. > :55:45.to get a touch on that. The amount of times they would have practised
:55:46. > :55:50.back in training. She got in front of Maddie Hinch and
:55:51. > :56:12.Richardson-Walsh. She looks scared, almost.
:56:13. > :56:22.Australia back in their own half. The last 60 seconds of this match.
:56:23. > :56:28.Australia are running out of time and opportunities.
:56:29. > :56:36.All 11 great British players. Back in the corner. The appeals for a
:56:37. > :56:57.penalty corner fell on deaf ears. That is out of play. That could be
:56:58. > :57:01.the final instalment of this match. The clock is reaching the 15 second
:57:02. > :57:08.mark. Great Britain are in possession.
:57:09. > :57:19.It's all over. Great Britain has got their Olympic hockey tournament off
:57:20. > :57:24.to the dream start. Defeating their old rivals Australia. Goals from
:57:25. > :57:40.Lily Owsley and Alex Danson. That is a terrific performance from
:57:41. > :57:46.Team GB. Remember our men's side was worth it by Belgium earlier today,
:57:47. > :58:21.4-1. Let's turn to swimming. Finals coming up. Four years of sacrifice.
:58:22. > :58:35.Four years. The aquatics centre is located in the southern region of
:58:36. > :58:41.rear. We are with Helen Skelton. Are you pump? We are psyched up. There
:58:42. > :58:53.have been some dancers, Brazilian drums. -- samba. I was doing salsa
:58:54. > :58:56.around the table. Why wouldn't you? Seven British swimmers booked
:58:57. > :59:02.herself into the semifinals tonight. What are you excited about? It was
:59:03. > :59:12.great to see PBS. James Guy, Max Litchfield. It was not to be -- what
:59:13. > :59:19.is not to be excited about? This morning, no point in writing him
:59:20. > :59:23.off, not his best time. As we say, we are critical. We look at when
:59:24. > :59:26.people look in the water. He went out well and struggled a bit towards
:59:27. > :59:30.the end. When it got tight at the end, he had to fight. It didn't look
:59:31. > :59:33.like he had a lot left but it is a heat and he has had a lot of rest
:59:34. > :59:42.this afternoon, time to think and recover. I think this is a silly
:59:43. > :59:49.thing to say but is unable to swim better in the afternoon. This
:59:50. > :59:52.morning, he is one of 345, 31 is a pity to exactly the same thing last
:59:53. > :00:03.year at World Championships, came in the evening and picked up a silver
:00:04. > :00:08.metal. -- -- medal. We love repeating things. It looked a key
:00:09. > :00:14.tried hard this morning. I hope it is tactics and blown it out of the
:00:15. > :00:15.water. James is not the only person can get himself the podium this
:00:16. > :00:26.afternoon. Let's talk to Sharon Davies who is
:00:27. > :00:33.down there in the mix. Sharon, what did you make of this wins? What a
:00:34. > :00:45.fantastic year. I can see whether my shoulder. I thought that Hannah's
:00:46. > :00:49.swim was really good. Hannah was six in the Olympics in London. I hope
:00:50. > :01:08.she gets a medal because she deserves it. They look really good.
:01:09. > :01:16.We saw that the Hungarian and nearly broke the world record this morning,
:01:17. > :01:22.she did not quite manage to do it. Both of them, I do not want to
:01:23. > :01:26.discredit Ross, but Adam had a bit of a point to prove. I think we were
:01:27. > :01:33.all kind of talking about as the were going on. That is just what
:01:34. > :01:39.Adam does. He is so confident. He swings a great race and he just
:01:40. > :01:48.looks so confident as well. He is flying the flag for the city of
:01:49. > :01:56.Sheffield, Max Litchfield. Thank you. Really looking forward to this
:01:57. > :02:03.first final. There is the fourth fastest qualifier for this final,
:02:04. > :02:13.from the USA. Then there are the two Japanese. In three, he is returning
:02:14. > :02:25.from the Olympics in London. For me, I think has a cracking chance at a
:02:26. > :02:33.medal here are. -- here. He looked really very good in the heats. You
:02:34. > :02:46.are right. For me, he is a guy that delivers. Chase Kalisz coming out
:02:47. > :02:51.here for the United States. Very interesting with two Japanese and
:02:52. > :02:57.two Americans in three, four, five and six. They will have been sitting
:02:58. > :03:02.in the waiting room for this big moment, the first gold medal to be
:03:03. > :03:07.delivered in the Paul. We should talk quickly about Max Litchfield of
:03:08. > :03:13.Sheffield in Britain. A magnificent performance to qualify for this
:03:14. > :03:17.final. He was fifth in the European Championships just 80 weeks ago.
:03:18. > :03:24.Quite outstanding and Great Britain have sent a first warning, almost
:03:25. > :03:36.perfect. This is the 400 metre individual medley. Litchfield is in
:03:37. > :03:51.lane two. Chase Kalisz surrounded by the Japanese in lane four. - going
:03:52. > :04:03.for it Lane five. --I am going for Lane five. Chase Kish did a best
:04:04. > :04:12.time to qualify this morning. -- Chase Pallin.
:04:13. > :04:33.A great opportunity this. The fastest eight men in the world here
:04:34. > :04:43.in the final as Rio of the 400 metres men's individual medley.
:04:44. > :05:01.The length of butterfly, to backstroke, and then to freestyle.
:05:02. > :05:04.--2 lengths of butterfly, too much length of backstroke, too much
:05:05. > :05:23.length of freestyle. Going out with them. As expected,
:05:24. > :05:29.the 22-year-old Japanese. As I said before, for me, he is a man that can
:05:30. > :05:35.cope with the big pressure. The American delivered the fastest time
:05:36. > :05:47.to qualify. I am not sure if he has any more in him. Brilliant stuff
:05:48. > :05:52.from Seito. The Japanese are looking very, very strong. The Australian is
:05:53. > :05:59.on the outside of that shot in the right-hand lane. Great Britain's Max
:06:00. > :06:05.Litchfield app in late two year is going strong. He is still up in
:06:06. > :06:15.about fifth position. It is very tight for third, fifth and sixth.
:06:16. > :06:20.Both Japanese men are using big fly kicks, almost all 15 metres they are
:06:21. > :06:24.allowed. Backstroke in, he is actually coached by the Olympic
:06:25. > :06:33.gold-medallist breaststroke champion. If he can hold the lead to
:06:34. > :06:40.the best stroke lead, he will be strong. I think the American will be
:06:41. > :06:51.surprised that the Japanese are this far ahead. Happy halfway make of the
:06:52. > :07:05.final of this 400 metres individual men's relay. Here is absolutely
:07:06. > :07:15.charging in the centre. The black there. Seito or the other swimmer, I
:07:16. > :07:39.am not sure. They are all coming up together. Seito has maybe caught
:07:40. > :07:48.Hagino. Has Hagino got enough left in the tank? Is going to be Hagino
:07:49. > :07:57.who is first to turn. -- it is going to be. It is not an awful lot, .7
:07:58. > :08:11.for a second. Hagino leads, third is Seito. This is going to be one hell
:08:12. > :08:21.of a final. Kalisz is one hell of a freestyler. He trains with Michael
:08:22. > :08:30.Phelps. But Hagino is holding on. I tell you what though, Kalisz is
:08:31. > :08:37.coming back. Hagino is watching him, he is breathing to the right. Kalisz
:08:38. > :08:41.is also breathing to the right. Goodness me, Hagino looks like he is
:08:42. > :08:48.going to win the first final of this 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Is going
:08:49. > :08:58.to be gold to Japan ex, Hagino Japan. Gold and bronze to the
:08:59. > :09:04.Japanese, and the silver to Kalisz. Max Litchfield comes in fourth, a
:09:05. > :09:14.brilliant swim for Great Britain. That is just outside the British
:09:15. > :09:19.record. Max Litchfield having a brilliant swim, you could not ask
:09:20. > :09:22.for more. Fourth place, he would be disappointed, but the three men in
:09:23. > :09:31.the centre were really pushing and driving this race. Hagino really
:09:32. > :09:36.driving this race. Seito really took over on the backstroke and never
:09:37. > :09:43.looked back. He had to finish off a very strong finish from Kalisz. --
:09:44. > :09:50.it had to hold off a very strong finish. There is the first gold
:09:51. > :09:56.medal to Japan, to a man who broke his elbow at the World Championships
:09:57. > :10:01.on the training track. Before the last World Championships, he could
:10:02. > :10:11.not swim. What a fantastic start to the Olympics in Rio. Hagino with the
:10:12. > :10:20.first gold medal, Kalisz second for the USA, and Seito in a brilliant
:10:21. > :10:25.third place. There you go, the first gold medal in this in full at the
:10:26. > :10:38.Rio 2006 Olympics goes to Japan. It was such a close race. It was Max
:10:39. > :10:43.Litchfield's first final ever and he has done to personal-best times. He
:10:44. > :10:46.has just got such a bright future. Are you a little bit worried that
:10:47. > :10:50.when he came out this morning, that it was going to be difficult for him
:10:51. > :11:03.to back up that Berlin performance this morning? To make the final was
:11:04. > :11:06.his Olympic stated aim, and then to just get in there and see what
:11:07. > :11:17.happened. He was the best of the rest. It was a really grown up
:11:18. > :11:25.mature swim and he can take a lot of confidence from that. Max Litchfield
:11:26. > :11:37.was a European Junior championship winner earlier this year. Lets look
:11:38. > :11:47.ahead to the women's. The defending Olympic champion in the American, is
:11:48. > :11:53.anyone going to get her? She was the European champion at 14 years of
:11:54. > :12:05.age. She came to the Olympic Games and came fourth and she did not
:12:06. > :12:22.perform very well, if she is on form, I would say that they could
:12:23. > :12:25.push her. Would be fed to say that she is almost a victim of her own
:12:26. > :12:38.success? She has Way too many events. Let's hear from Max
:12:39. > :12:51.Litchfield nail. I am very happy. To personal-bests in a day. -- too much
:12:52. > :13:00.personal bests. There are always things you can go back on end work
:13:01. > :13:10.on. I can definitely do better there. Yeah, there is definitely a
:13:11. > :13:13.place to improve. Is great to see you swimming so well. Well done. She
:13:14. > :13:33.is. Huge congratulations to Max
:13:34. > :13:42.Litchfield. It is time now for the women's 100 metres butterfly
:13:43. > :13:53.semifinals. Thank you. You join us when they are just introducing the
:13:54. > :14:01.Hungarians,. -- the Hungarian swimmer. A truly valiant swimmer. I
:14:02. > :14:11.cannot believe that he actually thought he was going to come here
:14:12. > :14:15.and come forth. I am not sure if he could really do much about that, so
:14:16. > :14:18.I think that Max Litchfield has to feel proud about what he has
:14:19. > :14:22.achieved. I am not sure that he could have got third. I think that
:14:23. > :14:27.was a great result, to be effectively the best European. He
:14:28. > :14:33.won the European Championships by an absolute streak of time. There is
:14:34. > :14:40.the third fastest qualifier for this semi-final. A fantastic butterfly
:14:41. > :14:44.swimmer from the USA, and her teammates Vollmer, the Olympic
:14:45. > :15:06.champion, will grow in lane four. She has taken time out to have a
:15:07. > :15:15.baby since then. She looks in super shape. She has had great form since
:15:16. > :15:19.she came back after two years out. She has been getting better and
:15:20. > :15:28.better with every swim, and is a very experienced competitor. She was
:15:29. > :15:37.only 12 in the Sydney Olympics, she did not qualify. She is a very
:15:38. > :15:46.dangerous competitor, I believe. She has won very well, bit the swim in
:15:47. > :15:54.number five. That was in the US trials. This is not an easy thing to
:15:55. > :16:00.do. You get yourself down, ready to go in the start-up pulls you back.
:16:01. > :16:32.-- and the starter Paul is Denmark having a very good start. --
:16:33. > :16:37.Jeanette Watson. That was close. Few are allowed to do that much. Three
:16:38. > :16:47.from the top, Jeanette Watterson, the 28 rolled, -- 28-year-old.
:16:48. > :16:54.We saw her do the same this morning. Talk about the wheels coming. Very
:16:55. > :16:59.heavy on the shoulders and the arms in the last 15 metres. Here it is,
:17:00. > :17:04.Dana Vollmer, a great turn from the second American swimmer. She is 16
:17:05. > :17:07.hundredths of a second faster at the 50 metres and she was this morning,
:17:08. > :17:11.and she really attracted to this morning. Kelsi Worrell coming back,
:17:12. > :17:23.one lane closer to us in the blackout. Very close with Ikee, very
:17:24. > :17:26.close. She has just watched her teammates go gold and bronze on
:17:27. > :17:32.before and metres medley. Now she has won the first semi-final of the
:17:33. > :17:40.women's 100 metres butterfly. Dana Vollmer second, Ottesen bird. --
:17:41. > :17:45.third. Not that quick, that is dangerous. Yes, it will be
:17:46. > :17:48.interesting how they get on in the second semi-final. Dana Vollmer
:17:49. > :17:53.struggling a bit towards the end. Ikee is not even in the shot. I am
:17:54. > :18:00.sure that hundreds of second that she took in semi-final was inspired
:18:01. > :18:02.by the men in that first race. The 16-year-old Japanese competitor,
:18:03. > :18:09.just a little touch like that, just enough. All of the heads were down,
:18:10. > :18:19.no breeding inside the last five metres. -- breathing. Rikako Ikee of
:18:20. > :18:27.Japan wins it, Dana Vollmer second, Jeanette Ottesen bird. -- third.
:18:28. > :18:32.We will be back with the guys for the second semi-final in a minute,
:18:33. > :18:38.but we have been joined by Justin Rose. Hello! You are here for the
:18:39. > :18:44.goal. Well, not for the golf, obviously. Such a good event. This
:18:45. > :18:49.is your first swimming gala. What do you make of it so far? Unbelievable.
:18:50. > :18:52.This is my first ever Olympic event experience will stop why have never
:18:53. > :18:55.seen one before, I missed out on London 2012 as both a spectator and
:18:56. > :19:01.a player. This is amazing, the energy. I have been driving past the
:19:02. > :19:05.Village or weeks, it is great to finally experience it. I have been
:19:06. > :19:08.following you on Twitter, it is great to see you getting excited
:19:09. > :19:11.about everything. I expect you have an answer to this, but there are
:19:12. > :19:15.some obvious notable absences in the Gulf steam. What made you want to
:19:16. > :19:20.come? Since it was announced probably three or four years ago I
:19:21. > :19:25.have been very excited. My wife is a former Olympic gymnast. She was
:19:26. > :19:29.always hoping that golf would become an Olympics board. I am excited
:19:30. > :19:35.about it. I truly believe in it. I believe it can help grow the game,
:19:36. > :19:39.showcase the game. Obviously it is the pinnacle of most sports. So why
:19:40. > :19:46.not for us as well. Is the wife with you? She gets in on Monday. I
:19:47. > :19:49.suppose for you it is a completely different experience. You are in a
:19:50. > :19:53.big team environment, whereas normally, you are relatively on your
:19:54. > :19:56.own? Yes, it is a very individual sport we play. That is why I wanted
:19:57. > :20:00.to get to Rio for the opening ceremony. The march out with Team
:20:01. > :20:06.GB, it made you feel like something much bigger than your own individual
:20:07. > :20:09.sport. Did you enjoy it? It was amazing. The Maracana Stadium,
:20:10. > :20:13.500,000 people, great atmosphere. Everybody was so happy. It is so
:20:14. > :20:16.cool to be in a place where there are so many different cultures and
:20:17. > :20:22.nationalities, but everybody is connected by sport. You hoping this
:20:23. > :20:26.evening that by watching the swimmers, that if you get in the
:20:27. > :20:30.water you will be out a bit easier? Yes, if you clip the water, it is
:20:31. > :20:35.like a bunker shot. We do try to skim across the water. He loves the
:20:36. > :20:41.term "Snatching the water". He loves it. I have so much respect for these
:20:42. > :20:44.guys. I took my first couple of swimming lessons this year. It was
:20:45. > :20:53.so hard. Why didn't you come with us? I am not on that level. We know
:20:54. > :20:56.that Mark can talk about golf. He is in far less need of golfing lessons
:20:57. > :20:59.than I am in need of swimming lessons. Watch this space, I'm sure
:21:00. > :21:05.there will be a charity relief coming on. Right, time for the
:21:06. > :21:10.second semi-final. Thank you. A fascinating chat that
:21:11. > :21:14.was, I have to say. There will be lots of offers for free swimming
:21:15. > :21:19.lessons, I am sure. Straight into the second semi-final of the women's
:21:20. > :21:29.100 metres butterfly. Kenny Lexia, the 16-year-old from Canada. A huge
:21:30. > :21:41.talent. World junior record this morning. World junior recordholder
:21:42. > :21:48.in five, and world junior recordholder in four.
:21:49. > :21:59.She looked a bit rough this morning. A bit rusty. Just warming up, just
:22:00. > :22:05.getting through cobwebs. As many metaphors as you like. I thought she
:22:06. > :22:08.looked a bit nervous. I saw her in the training session a few days ago.
:22:09. > :22:22.She looked a bit... I don't know. Scared would be a strong word.
:22:23. > :22:30.Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, her first semi wasn't particularly quick.
:22:31. > :22:37.Second semi-final of the women's 100 metres butterfly. The world champion
:22:38. > :22:43.and the world recordholder, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden. She has had a
:22:44. > :22:46.decent start. Also a good start is Lou of China, in lane three. The
:22:47. > :22:52.silver-medallist from eight years ago. It counts a lot, four years of
:22:53. > :22:58.training. It is a long time to deliver. In lane two, it met Ian of
:22:59. > :23:06.Australia. From a very strong seeming family. -- McKeon of
:23:07. > :23:12.Australia. Her father, uncle and mother are also swimmers from
:23:13. > :23:17.Australia. McKeon is going very well in two. A great swim from her. Now,
:23:18. > :23:21.with 25 metres to go, Sarah Sjostrom starting to turn the burners on.
:23:22. > :23:26.This looks very good indeed. Look at that world record one. The world
:23:27. > :23:33.record is hers. Just outside it. Two tenths of a second outside it. A new
:23:34. > :23:37.Olympic record for Sarah Sjostrom. She just looked like she turned on
:23:38. > :23:43.the gas bar 25 metres to go. She is much more relaxed now. Look at that
:23:44. > :23:48.face. Rarely do set it, a very deceptive swim from Sjostrom. --
:23:49. > :23:56.really deceptive, a very deceptive swim. She started off slowly,
:23:57. > :23:59.building into the race. McKeon taking the first 50 metres, and
:24:00. > :24:06.Sjostrom doing enough, then winding it up with 50 metres to go. She just
:24:07. > :24:13.extended that lead. Right here, she is nearly three quarters ahead of
:24:14. > :24:18.the rest of the field. That was reversed within 20 metres.
:24:19. > :24:25.It just looks like she turned the gas up a little bit, didn't she? She
:24:26. > :24:33.decided it was time to go, and she went. That will do her confidence
:24:34. > :24:42.lots of good, going into the final as the faster swim. -- fastest
:24:43. > :24:45.swimmer. We said it was a bit dangerous in the first Semi, not
:24:46. > :24:56.particularly fast. Let's look at the Times. The second semi-final, a very
:24:57. > :25:00.fast Olympic record, 55.8. The first five have made it, which means Kelsi
:25:01. > :25:11.Worrell -- Kelsi Worrell of the USA is not in the final.
:25:12. > :25:18.Sjostrom first, McKeon second. One whole second ahead, that is
:25:19. > :25:24.extraordinary. And the massive news, no Kelsi Worrell of the USA.
:25:25. > :25:29.A new Olympic record for Sarah Sjostrom. We will be seeing what's
:25:30. > :25:31.more of her this week, she is very fast indeed, very impressive. She
:25:32. > :25:36.will be one of the standout stars of the Games. Speaking of standout
:25:37. > :25:39.stars, Justin, when you walk around the Village, you are Robbie Serie A
:25:40. > :25:42.sportsmen at a certain level. What is it like when you see, I mean, who
:25:43. > :25:49.are the people you get starstruck by? Of course. What impresses me is
:25:50. > :25:52.trying to walk around the Village, guessing what other people do,
:25:53. > :25:55.looking at different body shapes and different body types. You think,
:25:56. > :25:59.that is a sprinter, that is a gymnast. You admire all the
:26:00. > :26:03.different types of athletes that there are in the Village. Everybody
:26:04. > :26:07.has something to admire. What do you make of the golf course? I see it
:26:08. > :26:10.tomorrow for the first time. My caddie checked it out today, he
:26:11. > :26:13.really likes it, it is in great shape. They have built it from
:26:14. > :26:17.scratch, you never really know what you are going to get. Everybody is
:26:18. > :26:21.positive about it. Don't tell him when you are going, because you only
:26:22. > :26:24.need to look at the colour of his feet to know that you love a golf
:26:25. > :26:31.course. Because they are so white? Yes, you have a permanent golf turn.
:26:32. > :26:34.So what sport would Helen Skelton beat, then, if you have been
:26:35. > :26:40.identifying people in the Village? Be careful. I note is post-
:26:41. > :26:44.watershed, but we are straining in dangerous territory. Let's turn our
:26:45. > :26:47.attention to James Guy. 400 metres freestyle final. We have spoken
:26:48. > :26:50.about him maybe not being the happiest blood this morning, but how
:26:51. > :26:55.confident are you that he can do something in this final? I think
:26:56. > :26:59.from the championships last year, he went for a similar time to be final.
:27:00. > :27:03.He is doing exactly that tonight. Hopefully, fingers crossed, he will
:27:04. > :27:06.drop two seconds like he did. We will hopefully see him do a personal
:27:07. > :27:10.best. That will set him up for the 200 metres freestyle, which is
:27:11. > :27:14.arguably his better even. That is coming up tomorrow. It is good for
:27:15. > :27:18.him to get in the water and hopefully get a medal. We have to
:27:19. > :27:22.talk about Sun Yang, the reigning Olympic champion. He is a boy with a
:27:23. > :27:27.chequered four years, fair to say. He served three months of a drugs
:27:28. > :27:30.ban, drugs ban that was not actually until after he had served it. He
:27:31. > :27:35.spent a week in jail for drink-driving following a car crash
:27:36. > :27:38.in 2013. He has dominated this event at the last two World Championships,
:27:39. > :27:45.and he is the reigning Olympic champion. There has been plenty
:27:46. > :27:47.going on and out of the pool with him splashing potential opponents.
:27:48. > :27:51.There is plenty to talk about when it comes to Sun Yang. Will James Guy
:27:52. > :27:55.get distracted by that? I don't think so. You don't Google those
:27:56. > :27:59.stories. As much as it is happening, James Guy will want to focus on his
:28:00. > :28:06.race. Andy, Adrian, talk us through this one.
:28:07. > :28:10.Thank you, Helen. You have joined us just as James Guy, world champion of
:28:11. > :28:15.the 200 metres freestyle, silver-medallist last year, enters
:28:16. > :28:21.the 400 metres. He is wearing his big coat. He is going to be warm. He
:28:22. > :28:25.will be in lane seven, and right next to him is Sun Yang. Not a bad
:28:26. > :28:32.lane. David McKeon of Australia goes in two. And then the really big guys
:28:33. > :28:35.in the centre. This will be hard to call. I think this might be one of
:28:36. > :28:41.the closest 400 metres freestyle is in history. -- freestyles. If Sun
:28:42. > :28:47.Yang does not put the afterburners on, here he is coming out now, if he
:28:48. > :28:51.is not dominant then it will be a close finish. I have to say I am
:28:52. > :28:56.disappointed he is here, personally. He has been taking Malindi for his
:28:57. > :28:59.heart problem. Well, all of a sudden he does not have a heart problem and
:29:00. > :29:03.he is still here, not taking stuff. IT is here, he is racing, and I
:29:04. > :29:08.think he will be a real threat. -- baht.
:29:09. > :29:14.European champion, Gabriele Detti, third fastest qualifier for this
:29:15. > :29:20.final. He is in lane three. James Guy, six fastest. As we said, he did
:29:21. > :29:24.not swim particularly well in the heats this morning. He did enough to
:29:25. > :29:30.get in the final, enough to get in the lane next to him. Sun Yang is in
:29:31. > :29:33.six, Gaya is in seven, and on the other side of Sun Yang, Mack Horton.
:29:34. > :29:39.There he is, the fastest in the world this year. Three minutes, 41
:29:40. > :29:44.seconds. If he does that, definite medal, he could win it. If anybody
:29:45. > :29:49.does it it will be him. Conor Dwyer enters. A second under half slower
:29:50. > :29:52.than Mack Horton did this year at the Australian trials. Horton has to
:29:53. > :29:57.get it out here, he is younger, maybe he has been intimidated by Sun
:29:58. > :30:02.Yang. He has had a go, Sun Yang, hasn't it? He has been splashing
:30:03. > :30:08.them in the warmup pool. That is the kind of thing you might be doing
:30:09. > :30:12.Indi warmup pool. -- in the warmup pool. It has all been blown way out
:30:13. > :30:16.of proportion. I have to say, the answer from Mack Horton was that he
:30:17. > :30:17.doesn't talk about drugs cheats, which is a pretty strong statement
:30:18. > :30:40.to make right before the finals. Conor Dwyer is the fastest qualifier
:30:41. > :30:43.from the USA, he is in Lane four. Here's the fastest qualifier the
:30:44. > :31:09.final of the men's 400 metre freestyle. James Guy is the sixth
:31:10. > :31:15.fastest qualifier. This race is going to be absolutely fascinating.
:31:16. > :31:23.Sun Yang started pretty slowly. He must have heard my disapproval but
:31:24. > :31:31.he is in it. David McEwen going out first. Hopefully as we have
:31:32. > :31:35.mentioned, he is going to shake up this morning and put in a really
:31:36. > :31:44.good performance tonight. He needed to get amongst the medal. At the top
:31:45. > :31:49.the poor bloke, David McEwen. No one really showing the cards yet but
:31:50. > :31:57.James Guy has taken the lead now. 53.70. He is working really hard
:31:58. > :32:03.now. I think he is working particularly hard also in lane four
:32:04. > :32:13.going well, is Conor Dwyer of the USA. Mack Horton, in the yellow in
:32:14. > :32:20.the centre, looked very comfortable indeed. This is a very early start
:32:21. > :32:24.from James Guy. This is very brave indeed. As we know, he is the world
:32:25. > :32:34.champion in the 200 metre world freestyle. As we know, is that relay
:32:35. > :32:43.that Great Britain won, it was him that overtook the Americans. The
:32:44. > :32:51.last 200 metres, we will see whether he has got enough left in him. At
:32:52. > :32:56.world record pace. James Guy is leading by nearly a second. He has
:32:57. > :33:01.worked really hard, and now the charge is going to come. Mack
:33:02. > :33:04.Horton, the yellow of Australia is looking very comfortable and is
:33:05. > :33:15.starting to make a move. He is coming back. They are charging. This
:33:16. > :33:23.is amazing, isn't it? James Guy is trying to hold back the field, he
:33:24. > :33:32.has still got 150 metres left to go. He is a man capable of three minutes
:33:33. > :33:42.and 41 seconds. Sun Yang looking ominous in the white. -- in the
:33:43. > :33:48.white. Just reeling him in, let's hope that James Guy has got
:33:49. > :33:53.something left. At the metres and they are really starting to go now.
:33:54. > :33:57.Mack Horton has got his start, and James is trying to go with him now.
:33:58. > :34:02.Sun Yang is also starting to grow in the white hat for China. This is
:34:03. > :34:11.going to be absolutely special. James Guy is still there. The
:34:12. > :34:17.American might even turn in first place, no he is over in third.
:34:18. > :34:21.Fantastic, Mack Horton, I think the whole swimming fraternity is urging
:34:22. > :34:29.on. Sun Yang is training in Australia still. Sun Yang is closest
:34:30. > :34:32.to us in the pink suit but really is charging, but Mack Horton, the
:34:33. > :34:38.20-year-old Australian has still got it. Version takes the gold. He takes
:34:39. > :34:49.the gold in the 400 metres freestyle. The Australian will be
:34:50. > :34:53.happy with that result. Sun Yang has taken the silver, and James Guy has
:34:54. > :35:00.finished down in the sixth position. Not a bad time. What a final length.
:35:01. > :35:10.He has gone over to the far side of the lane, and is sitting on the
:35:11. > :35:15.rope. Absolutely outstanding. Mack Horton just stating. The 20-year-old
:35:16. > :35:22.having the maturity to stay in the middle and late James Guy do all of
:35:23. > :35:29.the work, it has to be said. And then make his move and just hold off
:35:30. > :35:38.Sun Yang. Brilliant. What about James Guy for the 200 metres? He
:35:39. > :35:47.showed great strength in the first 200 metres. I do not think is a 300
:35:48. > :35:54.metres or 400 metres freestyle at all. He gave it a shot. The wrong
:35:55. > :36:00.time for Sun Yang, and he knew it. That massive look over from Mark
:36:01. > :36:07.Horton. Well done, the Olympic champion for 400 metre freestyle. He
:36:08. > :36:13.has won five gold medals at the world Junior Championships. This guy
:36:14. > :36:20.has been swimming very well through to last year. At the World
:36:21. > :36:25.Championships, he could not pull it off. He's one pretty Polly actually,
:36:26. > :36:31.but he has come back for the gold medal now. Sun Yang takes the silver
:36:32. > :36:38.and Gabriele Detti takes the bonds. That was a brave swim by James Guy.
:36:39. > :36:46.He was out there for so long and he looked nervous. What did you make of
:36:47. > :36:54.James's swim? It was great up until 200 metres. I personally think it
:36:55. > :36:57.was very brave of him. For me, not the right tactics at an Olympic
:36:58. > :37:02.Games. Should have spoken about that with his coach. He knows how these
:37:03. > :37:09.people will swim. Nikkei .org and on and took a risk, but now is not
:37:10. > :37:16.really the time to take a risk, at the Olympic Games. I am really
:37:17. > :37:19.excited now for tomorrow. I hope that does not affect him too much
:37:20. > :37:23.and that he is not too disappointed. Looking at the Europeans, there was
:37:24. > :37:27.a lot of talk about his gameplan early in the competition but he did
:37:28. > :37:36.not let that affect him. Has he got the strength? We spoke about his
:37:37. > :37:41.coach wanting to focus on the 200 metre freestyle. That is slightly
:37:42. > :37:48.disappointing but it took a lot of confidence in the first couple of
:37:49. > :37:56.100 metres. Next Olympic final. Yes, not a bad day or bad week. It is
:37:57. > :38:02.still early for him. James, you worked hard on that one. It was the
:38:03. > :38:08.only way you could do it, wasn't it? I tried to grow fast, and ignore the
:38:09. > :38:16.pressure. A painful way to do it. Do you have any regrets? No, it is a
:38:17. > :38:22.great venue and it is nice to be here and just try to fight for
:38:23. > :38:30.medals. When you walked out, your mother had her hands over her face.
:38:31. > :38:33.It is lovely that they are here today to watch me swim and I would
:38:34. > :38:40.not be here without my coach and everybody. Talk to us about your 200
:38:41. > :38:48.metres. Your spin speed was definitely there. Yes, it is good
:38:49. > :38:56.signs for tomorrow. I will let you go then because I know you need to
:38:57. > :39:02.rest. We will see him tomorrow in the 200 metre freestyle. He was
:39:03. > :39:09.talking a lot about how important family support has been to him. They
:39:10. > :39:16.move down south for his slimming, it is a heck of a commitment for the
:39:17. > :39:21.entire family. Your parents getting up at 5am in the morning and driving
:39:22. > :39:29.you to school from a young age, it was young. His family moved house,
:39:30. > :39:40.and his dad moved house for him. It is a wonderful story. He will pick
:39:41. > :39:49.himself up very, very quickly. I think the only way he is going to
:39:50. > :40:06.get a medal is if he tries to go hard again. The first gold medal
:40:07. > :40:11.goes to Japan. He was world champion in this race, the 400 metres
:40:12. > :40:25.individual medley, but now he has to be satisfied with the bronze. It was
:40:26. > :40:31.a good time, but bronze it was. I wonder if he went a little bit too
:40:32. > :40:36.quickly this morning. I think that a butterfly, he went out quickly as
:40:37. > :40:54.well. I think he blew a lot of his energy there. Four minutes and six
:40:55. > :41:06.seconds for both second and third. He did well to take the silver medal
:41:07. > :41:14.in the 400 metres individual medley. Following in the legacy of Michael
:41:15. > :41:19.Phelps. That last 200 metres, his breaststroke leg was absolutely
:41:20. > :41:27.extraordinary. He took one and a half seconds of Hagino. It was
:41:28. > :41:37.Hagino's last leg where the damage was done. 1-over one and a half
:41:38. > :41:45.seconds, and it was good enough for aid gold medal in the Rio Olympics.
:41:46. > :42:03.And Olympic champion, Hagino of Japan. What a meet Japan have had
:42:04. > :42:13.already. First race won by a Hagino. -- won by Hagino. It was almost the
:42:14. > :42:20.perfect start for Japan, they could not have asked for more. It could
:42:21. > :42:30.have not have been even slightly better.
:42:31. > :43:55.From the land of the rising sun, they have too much medal is. The
:43:56. > :44:06.gold medal goes to Hagino, the champion of the 400 metres
:44:07. > :44:18.individual medley. Two medals for Japan. Congratulations to Hagino,
:44:19. > :44:23.the new Olympic champion. In 2012 in Barcelona, they had a cardboard
:44:24. > :44:25.cutout of him, and I think he felt that he was going to do a Michael
:44:26. > :44:49.Phelps. Japan had a wonderful London
:44:50. > :44:58.Olympics. They are surrounded by Japanese fans and they are very
:44:59. > :45:04.proud, and rightly so. Look at that down there, that is absolutely
:45:05. > :45:12.unbelievable. He has done it now but we think in Tokyo in two years time
:45:13. > :45:20.as well, he could do it again. He is the first man to hear his national
:45:21. > :45:29.anthem played here in Brazil. The medals are lovely. The medals are
:45:30. > :45:52.lovely? You love a bit of jewellery? I do. They are lovely.
:45:53. > :45:56.anthem we had tonight was the Japanese national anthem. Will we
:45:57. > :46:02.hear our own national anthem this evening? You never know. Hannah
:46:03. > :46:07.Miley is one lady that we are very proud of. Great Britain's Hannah
:46:08. > :46:11.Miley wins gold at the European Championships! It is a silver, well
:46:12. > :46:17.done Hannah Miley. World Championship silver medal. Hannah
:46:18. > :46:21.Miley wins gold for Scotland! What a start for the Commonwealth Games. I
:46:22. > :46:24.would love to be able to say at the end of it that we have done it,
:46:25. > :46:28.because it is every athlete's dream to come away with a medal. I think
:46:29. > :46:31.the journey we have had so far, and what I have learned and who I have
:46:32. > :46:34.become, that has changed my perspective a little bit. Yes, the
:46:35. > :46:38.medal at the end of the journey would be amazing, but that is not
:46:39. > :46:43.it. It sounds so final, but if you get the medal, it is like finishing
:46:44. > :46:47.a computer game. Now what? For me, the journey does not stop there. It
:46:48. > :46:50.keeps going. I would love that medal and I would not be training without
:46:51. > :46:54.the dream of being on the podium, but I don't see that as being the
:46:55. > :47:01.end, the final achievement. There is a much more afterwards to achieve.
:47:02. > :47:06.She is such an endearing young woman for so many reasons. Very grounded,
:47:07. > :47:09.very down-to-earth. We have spoken about the university where she
:47:10. > :47:14.trains, with family, in that pool. I love her attitude. After this
:47:15. > :47:17.morning's swims she said to Sharon, yes, I know that Patinkin was out
:47:18. > :47:21.there miles ahead of everybody, which she was, but Hannah said that
:47:22. > :47:25.she has to back that up the night. You never know what might happen.
:47:26. > :47:30.Optimistic, some might call it naive, but it is the right attitude
:47:31. > :47:33.to have. I think she even said the other day, she said that the
:47:34. > :47:37.butterflies are not there for her any more. She is coming to her third
:47:38. > :47:41.Olympics. It disappears a little bit, especially after the home
:47:42. > :47:44.Games. But the great thing that she does is preparation, organisation,
:47:45. > :47:48.that hard work and routine, the monotonous up and down, following
:47:49. > :47:52.that black line. She does it all the time and that is why she is so
:47:53. > :47:57.successful. She puts in the time. Her whole family are all orientated
:47:58. > :48:01.around her and her Olympic success. Nobody deserves a medal more than
:48:02. > :48:05.her. She spoke earlier in the week about the fact that yes, she has got
:48:06. > :48:08.to the Village, but she is not worried about taking pictures of
:48:09. > :48:11.Phelps, like maybe James Guy is. She has planned her route to the dining
:48:12. > :48:17.hall and the bus, and that is all. Yes, your first Olympics, you know
:48:18. > :48:21.what it is like. Your first Olympics you are a bit excited, you go into
:48:22. > :48:23.the Village, you see listed in a hall that is about the size of
:48:24. > :48:27.former football pitches and serves about 5000 people. I remember going
:48:28. > :48:32.to the Village and seen Muhammad Ali and people like that, it was mind
:48:33. > :48:38.blowing. -- seeing. She has been there and done that. She is very
:48:39. > :48:43.confident now. I think it will be a race the second and third. She is in
:48:44. > :48:47.there, she is in the mix. She is still only 26 years old. If she does
:48:48. > :48:51.her best time tonight, she will win a medal. Let's talk to Sharon
:48:52. > :48:54.Davies, because you spoken to her a lot, you have spoken to Hannah for
:48:55. > :48:57.many years. You have seen her win medals on all of the big stages.
:48:58. > :49:04.What would another big medal means to her? Yeah, absolutely. Hannay was
:49:05. > :49:08.coached by her dad and I was coached by my dad, and this was my event, so
:49:09. > :49:12.there are lots of similarities. She will want this more than anything.
:49:13. > :49:15.Ask any Olympian, it is the Olympic medals that count. Sometimes she can
:49:16. > :49:19.analyse things. If there is one thing I can say to Hannah Miley it
:49:20. > :49:24.would be to relax and enjoy it a little bit. Be prepared, because she
:49:25. > :49:28.does not have the best fly back. She often has to claw it back. She has a
:49:29. > :49:31.very strong brushstroke and is good on her freestyle. Expectancies out.
:49:32. > :49:38.Do not going to panic mode too much. The Japanese are having a wonder.
:49:39. > :49:40.Four years before Tokyo, they are working towards that and the
:49:41. > :49:46.government is investing a lot in sport. But don't count Hannah Miley
:49:47. > :49:50.out. Well, Hannah Miley is in the final of this one. But she is not
:49:51. > :49:57.the only Brit. Aimee Wilmott is here as well, a second generation of
:49:58. > :50:02.Indian. Andy, Adrian, over to you. Well, we just saw another Japanese
:50:03. > :50:14.400 metres swimmer. We saw the men take hold and -- gold and bronze in
:50:15. > :50:22.the individual. Lane two, Aimee Wilmott. She swims at the London
:50:23. > :50:26.Olympic Aquatic Centre. What a great opportunity for her. Fifth fastest
:50:27. > :50:32.qualifier for this final. A fantastic base to be. I have to say,
:50:33. > :50:36.I could not think of better places for these two Brits to be qualifying
:50:37. > :50:40.them fourth and fifth. Hannah Miley goes in six. Come and will champion
:50:41. > :50:47.and British recordholder. Fourth and fifth qualify. I think the pressure
:50:48. > :50:53.is off a little bit. Sharon called it right. Hannah Miley is on
:50:54. > :50:58.pressured, on her best time. She is well capable of silver or bronze.
:50:59. > :51:06.Dorado will be one of the women trying to stop her. As has also been
:51:07. > :51:17.mentioned, Hannah Miley is not going to be up there. Belmonte, very
:51:18. > :51:21.strong on the fly. Belmonte was the second fastest qualifier. Goodness
:51:22. > :51:26.me, what an amazing swim it was from Katinka Hosszu, the second fastest
:51:27. > :51:35.time in history. She very nearly broke the world record. Just missed
:51:36. > :51:38.it by 15 hundredths of a second. She turned with 100 metres to go three
:51:39. > :51:47.seconds underneath world-record pace. She did the last 100 metres
:51:48. > :51:58.freestyle in the London 2012 Olympic 's on the one minute. Very unusual.
:51:59. > :52:04.15 seconds slower than that time she did four years ago. You she went on,
:52:05. > :52:32.might see her record go this evening as well.
:52:33. > :52:37.Katinka Hosszu, the fastest qualifier for hungry, in four will
:52:38. > :52:43.stop Great Britain, while they have got them surrounded in lanes two.
:52:44. > :52:50.Aimee Wilmott and Hannah Miley. Very fast, straight out of the traps.
:52:51. > :52:53.Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. Katinka Hosszu will try to get even more of
:52:54. > :52:57.a lead before she turns for the freestyle. What was interesting last
:52:58. > :53:00.at the World Championships was that she went for the same thing, went
:53:01. > :53:08.for the world record, not just the gold medal. My Dorado is next. --
:53:09. > :53:11.Madeline Dirado. She went one half or two seconds faster than critical
:53:12. > :53:14.for Sue on the freestyle and was reeling her back in. But she
:53:15. > :53:20.couldn't quite get it. The gold and silver-medallists are here.
:53:21. > :53:22.Belmonte, the Spanish swimmer, at coached by Fred Benaud. Some of you
:53:23. > :53:28.will remember Fred from his time in Scotland as a coach. He has done a
:53:29. > :53:38.great job with Beaumont Avenue. -- Belmonte. Katinka Hosszu working
:53:39. > :53:42.pretty hard. She is a great fly swimmer, but Mireia Belmonte is a
:53:43. > :53:46.World Championship silver-medallist. She is beating her by about two and
:53:47. > :53:51.a half metres. Now backstroke for Katinka Hosszu. Very quick indeed.
:53:52. > :53:55.European champion on the 100 metres backstroke two years ago.
:53:56. > :54:00.Gold-medallist at the European Championships in the 200 metres.
:54:01. > :54:05.Looking really good in this 150 metre turn. A way, way, way ahead of
:54:06. > :54:11.that world record, that is a computer-generated world-record
:54:12. > :54:16.line. She also has a strong brushstroke. It has been improving.
:54:17. > :54:19.It is the weaker of her strokes, that it has strengthened over the
:54:20. > :54:22.last couple of years. I think she is looking to get about four seconds
:54:23. > :54:28.ahead of the freestyle on the world record. Maria Dorado -- Madeline
:54:29. > :54:35.Dirado, also making record pace. Very similar to the World
:54:36. > :54:40.Championships. No doubt about the leader here, Katinka Hosszu, going
:54:41. > :54:46.for the world record. The halfway stage to the final of this woman's
:54:47. > :54:50.400 metres individual medley, and Katinka Hosszu, 3.3 seconds
:54:51. > :54:54.underneath world-record pace. Now she really has to drive this breast
:54:55. > :55:00.stroke leg, see if she can get towards the four seconds under. But
:55:01. > :55:07.last 100 metres is hard. She is stretching her lead. Madeline Dirado
:55:08. > :55:10.trying to go with her. I can tell you that Great Britain's Aimee
:55:11. > :55:14.Wilmott is going very well, and Hannah Miley has now moved into
:55:15. > :55:23.bronze medal position. Now the brushstroke is starting to move.
:55:24. > :55:26.Hannah Miley looking good in six. Hannah Miley and third, Aimee
:55:27. > :55:30.Wilmott and fifth. They both going well. I think there is a bronze
:55:31. > :55:34.medal in this for the British women. Belmonte not swimming as good as she
:55:35. > :55:38.could do here. Katinka Hosszu well ahead of the world record. Madeline
:55:39. > :55:42.Dirado going with her. Hannah Miley has half a medal -- up a body length
:55:43. > :55:51.on that bronze medal position, off Beaumont Avenue. -- Belmonte. I tell
:55:52. > :55:55.you what, Madeline Dirado herself is slowing. Hannah Miley putting
:55:56. > :56:01.herself in great contention for a medal. Katinka Hosszu is 5.2 seconds
:56:02. > :56:05.underneath world-record pace, and she has got some legs here as well.
:56:06. > :56:09.She looked pretty tired at the end of that brushstroke, but goodness
:56:10. > :56:13.me, she is going for it. Surely she cannot fail now, to break this world
:56:14. > :56:18.record, 5.2 seconds with 100 metres to go? Well, she had 3.5 seconds and
:56:19. > :56:22.she lost it only in the heat this morning. I don't believe that line
:56:23. > :56:26.is going to catch her. I think she is going to break the world record.
:56:27. > :56:34.This is a stunning swim. Third to turn. Fantastic. I tell you what,
:56:35. > :56:39.Belmonte is not giving up easily. Belmonte in fourth position. A
:56:40. > :56:41.brilliant distance freestyle. She is absolutely charging at Hannah Miley
:56:42. > :56:50.of Great Britain. No doubt about the winner. It will just you question of
:56:51. > :56:58.whether it is a new world record. She is way, way under it. Look at
:56:59. > :57:02.the battle for bronze. It is gold, it is world-record for Katinka
:57:03. > :57:06.Hosszu. Silver in lane three to Madeline Dirado, and the bronze has
:57:07. > :57:10.just gone to Belmonte on the touch. Goodness me, that was so close for
:57:11. > :57:16.Hannah Miley. Hannah Miley takes fourth. A brave swim indeed from
:57:17. > :57:23.her. But a massive world record for Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. Four
:57:24. > :57:26.minutes and 26 seconds. My word. An awesome swim. Katinka Hosszu
:57:27. > :57:31.completely dominating the race. She has smashed the world record. The
:57:32. > :57:34.world record that was set in London in 2012 which we thought would not
:57:35. > :57:41.go for a mighty long time. She has been building up to it. Working with
:57:42. > :57:46.her husband, who is a coach. Over in the United States. This, I believe,
:57:47. > :57:53.will be the start of a number of medals for her at these Games. Get
:57:54. > :57:58.one, get the confidence. She was dominant from the very go. I think
:57:59. > :58:15.she recognised she did not have enough of a lead on the world-record
:58:16. > :58:21.this morning. That is husband. He is known for his extravagant behaviour.
:58:22. > :58:31.Shane Tusup. That was really something quite special. Utterly
:58:32. > :58:43.extraordinary. She was 5.2 seconds ahead after the breaststroke. Well,
:58:44. > :58:47.he is a character. Goodness me, he is a person you like to see happy. I
:58:48. > :58:50.am not sure I would like to see him unhappy. The result confirmed.
:58:51. > :58:59.Katinka Hosszu, and massive new record. She takes the gold. Silver
:59:00. > :59:05.goes to Madeline Dirado of the USA. And bronze to Belmonte of Spain.
:59:06. > :59:13.That means Great Britain's Hannah Miley just misses out in fourth.
:59:14. > :59:21.Well, Katinka Hosszu, the new Olympic champion. She absolutely
:59:22. > :59:26.destroyed the world record in two seconds. It was what everybody
:59:27. > :59:30.suspected was going to happen, and she blew the field away, way out in
:59:31. > :59:36.front from the early stages of that race. Come on, Aki Adlington, Mark
:59:37. > :59:43.Foster, lay your cards on the table. You are heartbroken. I am so angry!
:59:44. > :59:49.Hannah, what was she doing in that last 50 metres? She didn't breed. If
:59:50. > :59:53.you know that somebody is coming up, it could have given her that extra
:59:54. > :59:59.tiny little bit if she had just read and thought, she is right they lack.
:00:00. > :00:05.Are you not just thinking, had down, let's get this done? Look, dammit,
:00:06. > :00:08.that was opportunity! Iron devastated for her. She deserved it
:00:09. > :00:17.so much. She will be heartbroken. All she had to do was read once.
:00:18. > :00:24.She had half that body length going out the exact term. It might have
:00:25. > :00:27.made the slightest difference. But at the same time, she was going 50
:00:28. > :00:31.metres down the end, giving it everything she had. That was a heck
:00:32. > :00:35.of a race. We all thought this would be the chance that Hannah Miley got
:00:36. > :00:43.the Olympic medal that she deserved. Let's hear from her now.
:00:44. > :00:57.I don't know what to say. Altogether. That was that. You saw
:00:58. > :01:02.her though, didn't you? I could see her. I had my head down and I knew
:01:03. > :01:08.she was coming back at me, but I had nothing left. It was just such a mix
:01:09. > :01:15.of emotions because I am actually happy that I went so much faster
:01:16. > :01:21.than I did in the heats. It was so close, I was so close to getting it.
:01:22. > :01:23.It is just kind of happiness and disappointment coming together all
:01:24. > :01:32.at once, and this is what you get. Don't worry. This is sport actually,
:01:33. > :01:40.isn't it? The pair view at one stage were almost in third and fourth.
:01:41. > :01:44.Good swimming today. Yes, I am happy with that. I would have liked to
:01:45. > :01:48.come back tonight and swum a little bit faster but I had to give
:01:49. > :01:53.everything this morning and just secure a place in the final, and
:01:54. > :01:58.obviously so did Hannah. For the time we needed to get into the
:01:59. > :02:02.event, we kind of had to do that. It is my first Olympic final and I am
:02:03. > :02:10.really happy without. It is so difficult, isn't it? The work that
:02:11. > :02:15.you do is just huge. It is just extraordinary. I am going on a bit,
:02:16. > :02:24.I know. I have enjoyed the season so much this year. I have kind of
:02:25. > :02:30.reinvented myself. I have kind of taken, I mean obviously I'd end
:02:31. > :02:40.always serious about my training, what I do the sport because I love
:02:41. > :02:44.to do it. It has just been great. My coach has been able to actually
:02:45. > :02:52.coach me properly since April is not the to do all of that and have such
:02:53. > :02:57.a great time with my coach is pretty cool. It has kind of set me up as
:02:58. > :03:05.well because it has been an incredible journey. You have got the
:03:06. > :03:12.200 metre individual medley to come, maybe not your best event. Yes,
:03:13. > :03:15.definitely. It is kind of nice once you have that one out of the way
:03:16. > :03:21.because you can enjoy the rest of the meat. You are kind of unsure of
:03:22. > :03:27.where things are and sometimes that is a good thing, you can kind of
:03:28. > :03:40.just go with it. Thank you. Go and give her a big hug. Amy and Hannah,
:03:41. > :03:44.congratulations. Hannah Miley just missing out. She may not be living
:03:45. > :03:49.here with a new Olympic medal, but she has won herself an army of fans.
:03:50. > :03:56.A fantastic swim and a fantastic swim, you cannot take anything away
:03:57. > :04:01.from the. Coming up a little later on, we will see Ross McDonald in the
:04:02. > :04:09.finals of the 100 metre final of the breaststroke. A bit of a battle for
:04:10. > :04:13.the boys. So so close for Hannah Miley. Let's bring the right
:04:14. > :04:22.up-to-date with what has been going on in hockey. Mixed fortunes because
:04:23. > :04:25.the men were beaten 4-1 by Belgium. But the women have put in an
:04:26. > :04:33.absolutely terrific performance this evening against old rivals,
:04:34. > :04:38.Australia. Lily Ancely with the final goal, she plays her hockey for
:04:39. > :04:46.Birmingham University. Take a look at this fantastic performance from
:04:47. > :04:52.Team GB. Brilliant finishing. Both players spoke after the match to our
:04:53. > :04:58.reporter. The two top scorers of Team GB are beside me. First of all,
:04:59. > :05:03.a wonderful performance, just going to that because this was such a
:05:04. > :05:07.wonderful match against great opponents. Absolutely wonderful
:05:08. > :05:12.performance and a. We had a great performance that we were able to
:05:13. > :05:19.stick to. A fantastic camaraderie today. A lot of pressure early on
:05:20. > :05:23.but you able to get the goal? Yes, it in my first Olympics, it was a
:05:24. > :05:31.bit of a nervous start. I was kind of shaking. We definitely matched
:05:32. > :05:38.them, we went one up and won the game. It was very different to you
:05:39. > :05:43.coming here four years ago and scoring in the opening event? Yes,
:05:44. > :05:49.if someone had told me four years ago at London, that I would be here
:05:50. > :05:59.playing in an Olympic match, I would have told them they were lying.
:06:00. > :06:08.Playing at an Olympic Games is always special. It is very much
:06:09. > :06:14.about the handball coming right on the back. We have played really
:06:15. > :06:20.solidly as a team. We saw that you guys all look really focused and
:06:21. > :06:26.positive, also a little bit of bounce in your step, don't you feel?
:06:27. > :06:30.Yes, it is all about the culture that we have as a team. That is
:06:31. > :06:35.pretty special and I know that is what you will see throughout this
:06:36. > :06:44.game is. All that experience plus youth as well. You a sort of the
:06:45. > :06:52.baby of the team. Yes, like I said, we are such a tight group. It has
:06:53. > :06:57.all come together at the right time. I have had this experience around me
:06:58. > :07:07.the kind of get us debutants ready. A brilliant start. Don't stop there.
:07:08. > :07:11.All the way, we go. A brilliant start, attention will then turn to
:07:12. > :07:15.their next match. What a great start, beating Australia. Let's
:07:16. > :07:22.bring you a little bit of tennis news because we have had a little
:07:23. > :07:30.bit of a shock here today. Is Venus Williams is to win a medal here at
:07:31. > :07:35.the Rio Olympics, it is not going to be in the singles. Her opponent
:07:36. > :07:42.collapsing to the ground in celebration as the fifth seed, Venus
:07:43. > :07:47.Williams, hammering a forehand on the last point. Venus Williams will
:07:48. > :08:00.of course be back in the women's doubles. Let's go back now to Helen.
:08:01. > :08:07.We had just seen Mack Horton, the champion in the men's 400 metre
:08:08. > :08:10.freestyle final. A bit of a relief for Mack Horton, he is a very
:08:11. > :08:16.serious character. Huge congratulations. You adjust talking
:08:17. > :08:26.about him as a young boy looking up at his heroes. -- you were just
:08:27. > :08:30.talking about. Yes, he was 11, and it is just so sweet that you can be
:08:31. > :08:42.inspired by someone to get an Olympic medal. We love Mack Horton.
:08:43. > :08:49.We have owned him tonight, we love him because he beat Sun Yang. Of
:08:50. > :08:55.course, there has been a lot of discussion and controversy around
:08:56. > :09:00.Sun Yang. Actually, it does not really matter, does it? Because Mack
:09:01. > :09:10.Horton is the one going home without medal. -- with that medal. We are
:09:11. > :09:19.about to see Adam Peter, who is well on track to become Britain's first
:09:20. > :09:26.Olympic champion. Let's talk to our last Olympic champion, what did you
:09:27. > :09:35.make... What is so funny about that? Don't look so sceptical. It was a
:09:36. > :09:40.long time ago, wasn't it? I cannot remember it, actually. It was a
:09:41. > :09:44.fantastic performance. Is great to be here commentating on it, to see
:09:45. > :09:49.that performance was just tremendous. He can handle the
:09:50. > :09:56.pressure, he gets better in every race and I am expecting him to do it
:09:57. > :10:03.tonight. Really? Some people would say that there is no chance he has.
:10:04. > :10:06.Could he go even faster? Yes, there has been a lot of talk about how
:10:07. > :10:12.good he looked in that. He has almost put it all together. He has
:10:13. > :10:18.done really well. There is a lot of chat that he could go under 57
:10:19. > :10:23.seconds. He has taken the breaststroke to a different level. I
:10:24. > :10:31.think we have seen that in the passed, past vehicle for years. We
:10:32. > :10:35.saw in this morning, he seemed so relaxed and confident. He was
:10:36. > :10:41.talking to the journalist for about 40 minutes, wasn't it? He spent
:10:42. > :10:46.almost 40 minutes talking about inspiring youngsters. How impressive
:10:47. > :10:49.is that? I have to say that the whole thing was just a enormously
:10:50. > :11:00.professional. He has talked about getting more faster. Half a second
:11:01. > :11:05.the first time he broke the record, a full second the second time he
:11:06. > :11:07.broke it. Who knows? The way he's won this morning, who is going to
:11:08. > :11:17.doubt it? Turn around and face the pool. I was
:11:18. > :11:24.telling them off like kids there. You kind of have to do it with those
:11:25. > :11:29.two, don't you? I am very excited about what we have in the pool, not
:11:30. > :11:37.only tonight but during the rest of the event. Yes, I hope that he can
:11:38. > :11:43.make that final. Obviously, he made it in the World Championships last
:11:44. > :11:52.year. It is a bit hard because you do not know how they are going to go
:11:53. > :11:59.in the second one. Are the people you can say that the pressure or the
:12:00. > :12:02.expectation, he is a champion, while recordholder, it does not seem that
:12:03. > :12:12.the pressure is getting to him, does it? No, and they are quite confident
:12:13. > :12:19.people. Almost naively confident. Which is kind of a lovely thing.
:12:20. > :12:25.Don't over think it, just go through the motions of his race and that is
:12:26. > :12:28.what he does so well. If he gets it right and just looks after himself,
:12:29. > :12:37.he gets the gold medal. When you think that all of his achievements,
:12:38. > :12:44.it is easy to forget that he is still looking at this stage. Yes. It
:12:45. > :12:49.literally means that if he wins this medal, he has got the full set. Or
:12:50. > :12:57.the experience is just kind of come together. He races as if he has been
:12:58. > :13:03.racing for 20 years. He is just very chilled. Usually react within 20
:13:04. > :13:08.seconds of the race, and it is like you know what is going to happen. He
:13:09. > :13:18.has got to be down in the top three, maybe topple. Then for Adam, if he
:13:19. > :13:23.gets the start, he will have a shot at a world record. I think you can
:13:24. > :13:32.all hear that the Brazilians are certainly in the house. You are
:13:33. > :13:42.hearing the wall for Gomez of Brazil's. The crowd going nuts. He
:13:43. > :13:46.has held on to this. Jake Packard from Australia. Good to see
:13:47. > :13:53.Australians putting it back together in the field. They have had some
:13:54. > :13:59.good breaststroke is in the passed. Here is the only person I can see
:14:00. > :14:05.threatening Adam, although I cannot actually see anyone threatening him.
:14:06. > :14:16.I will tell you who is happy, team Japan. They really as. They won the
:14:17. > :14:30.first gold medal of the event in the men's 100 metre breaststroke.
:14:31. > :14:44.Only two swimmers went under one minute in qualifying, Adam Peaty
:14:45. > :14:51.qualified in 57 seconds. His friends and family are watching in a pub in
:14:52. > :14:56.Stirling. If you are watching, give him a cheer.
:14:57. > :15:11.Here is on the junior team with Adam Peaty. -- he is on these.
:15:12. > :15:19.The Brazilians were cheering enormously loudly for Gomes. Ross
:15:20. > :16:06.Murdoch will be into. -- in two. Murdoch is in second place. A big
:16:07. > :16:08.turn. Murdoch needs to work hard. We thought he was more of a 200 metres
:16:09. > :16:25.backstroke. -- breaststroke. He needs to charge.
:16:26. > :16:35.He is on about this or six position. Murdoch still has work to do.
:16:36. > :16:59.It is a difficult one. Koseki doing exactly what he did in the heats.
:17:00. > :17:09.It throws you off centre. He needs to work on that. A good bit jury.
:17:10. > :17:15.Joao Gomes, the 30-year-old from Brazil, pleasing the crowd. I think
:17:16. > :17:23.he will make the final. A blanket finish.
:17:24. > :17:50.The first semi-final. Cordes looked good. Ross Murdoch down in sixth.
:17:51. > :17:57.Ross Murdoch third in the championships last year. Semifinals.
:17:58. > :18:06.What did you make of it? It wasn't good. His dive was decent. He was
:18:07. > :18:09.second at the turn. He just started grabbing and snatching. We talk
:18:10. > :18:16.about people snatching the water. You don't catch the water. He has a
:18:17. > :18:21.longer stroke and he just raved it. He will be disappointed with that.
:18:22. > :18:25.It is unlikely he will make the final. He will be disappointed
:18:26. > :18:29.especially because he is not doing the 200 metres breaststroke. But it
:18:30. > :18:36.is a specialist event. You will be really disappointed. Let's hear from
:18:37. > :18:43.him. Reid we were talking about snatching and grabbing the water.
:18:44. > :18:51.That looks at what you are doing. And it ago back and have a think and
:18:52. > :18:55.see what went wrong. It won't be good enough for the final.
:18:56. > :19:06.Breaststroke is funny. You cannot over try. You can sleep a bit. And
:19:07. > :19:12.then you start to cost centimetres. -- slip. It is just not good enough,
:19:13. > :19:15.really. Back to the drawing board. It didn't work today. I'm sure it is
:19:16. > :19:22.not the last we have seen of you. See you later. Lowe great attitude.
:19:23. > :19:32.Shrugs his shoulders, moves on. Right, second semi-final. The big
:19:33. > :19:34.guns are out in this one. We are here, we are ready. We are the big
:19:35. > :19:42.guns. Not sure if Adam Peaty can be
:19:43. > :19:57.caught. Cody Miller, third fastest qualifier
:19:58. > :20:00.for the second semi-final. What an extraordinary swim it was from PT.
:20:01. > :20:12.-- Peaty. It will be great fellow Peaty if
:20:13. > :20:37.there are two Brazilians in it. He and Mel have been working on the
:20:38. > :20:39.dive. Only two men have ever broken 27 from a flat 25. That's all they
:20:40. > :21:34.have to do. Adam Peaty of Great Britain, world
:21:35. > :21:39.record holder in four. A very good reaction to the gun. Not a bad
:21:40. > :21:45.underwater. Adam Peaty of Great Britain. This is exactly where he
:21:46. > :21:51.started. He got up to about 20 metres and then really rocketed. He
:21:52. > :21:58.looks really good already. He is going with Van Der Burgh of South
:21:59. > :22:13.Africa. Very few swimmers in the game get under 0.6 in the gun.
:22:14. > :22:23.Cody Miller having a great race. Van Der Burgh tailing off. Adam Peaty is
:22:24. > :22:32.swimming well. His world record that he set this morning. Let's see if he
:22:33. > :22:47.can go faster. This is perfect from Adam Peaty! Goodness me, the time is
:22:48. > :22:54.57.60 two. -- 57. 62. Great Britain's Adam Peaty, are perfect
:22:55. > :23:02.semi-final. He has worked quite hard for that one. He will be looking for
:23:03. > :23:07.a world record. It was mentioned in their interviews with Ross Murdoch,
:23:08. > :23:12.breaststroke is a weird old funny old stroke. You can't snatch the
:23:13. > :23:16.water. You want to get hold of the water, sometimes you rush it a bit.
:23:17. > :23:22.I think maybe, he was a bit overconfident. He is not an arrogant
:23:23. > :23:28.guide, this is not what I'm talking about. It is his confidence in his
:23:29. > :23:35.ability to raise fast. It was just outside the world record. It's very
:23:36. > :23:43.good, though. Very good. Not bad. Billion. A massive world record in
:23:44. > :23:53.the heats this morning. -- brilliance. Winning the second
:23:54. > :24:01.semi-final, Adam Peaty. Van Der Burgh, the Olympic champion, in
:24:02. > :24:04.third. Earlier today, we had Adam saying to Sharon poolside that we
:24:05. > :24:09.can't get carried away, the job is not done until we get the medal in
:24:10. > :24:15.the bad. We can get excited now, can't we? I am to
:24:16. > :24:22.the bad. We can get excited now, can't we? I am --I am disappointed
:24:23. > :24:25.for Ross but excited for Adam. He probably had a lot going through his
:24:26. > :24:30.mind. He will want to get back to the village, get nice and arrested,
:24:31. > :24:36.ready for tomorrow's final. We are going to talk about Adam a lot but
:24:37. > :24:39.let's give Ross his credit. For the last couple of years, he has done
:24:40. > :24:45.phenomenal things in Nepal and he has a big future ahead of him. At
:24:46. > :24:51.the Commonwealth Games, he pulled it out of the bag and just missed the
:24:52. > :24:56.world record by 0.2 of a second. He was just a bit short and grabbing a
:24:57. > :25:00.bit of the water. He will be disappointed simply because last
:25:01. > :25:03.year, bronze, the time he is doing, come final tomorrow night, that will
:25:04. > :25:08.be in a mix of the medals so that will be a big disappointment for
:25:09. > :25:15.him. For the Europeans we saw three months ago, unfortunately, he came
:25:16. > :25:20.third in trials and didn't qualify. Because Ross is a 200 European
:25:21. > :25:23.Bestry champion, he is not doing here at the Olympics and that is a
:25:24. > :25:29.discussion that is going on behind the scenes. It is what it is. --
:25:30. > :25:33.breaststroke. He seemed to have the right attitude, shrugged his
:25:34. > :25:39.shoulders and moved on. I wonder how long Adam Peaty is going to spend in
:25:40. > :25:48.that media line tonight. Years in position number one of about 20. It
:25:49. > :25:57.will probably be a while. What did you make of that? He is blowing the
:25:58. > :26:01.field away. Fantastic. It was a great swim but if it was me and I
:26:02. > :26:05.think he is seeking perfection. He wants to swim the perfect race every
:26:06. > :26:09.time and he will look at that, the little areas where he didn't do his
:26:10. > :26:19.even fastest world record and gold medal tomorrow, he still lives, it's
:26:20. > :26:26.up for grabs. Second fastest in history by seven 100s. I am a huge
:26:27. > :26:34.fan of Adam Peaty. I hope he nails it tomorrow, fantastic. You are a
:26:35. > :26:40.harsh critic Adrian Moorhouse. Don't forget we can see you and your
:26:41. > :26:47.faces. We have the women's four x 100 women's relay.
:26:48. > :26:52.They were phenomenal. This was a big surprise, the Canadians have
:26:53. > :26:56.qualified third fastest of this final. They have 216 -year-olds in
:26:57. > :27:01.their team and they will be going third and fourth at the final leg
:27:02. > :27:10.will be by the new world junior recordholder. A fascinating race.
:27:11. > :27:18.Team USA, can you see past the Australians, though? They have four
:27:19. > :27:26.of the top ten. With the Campbell sisters.
:27:27. > :27:34.I can't see beyond them. They are phenomenal freestyle swimmers and
:27:35. > :27:40.they will be shooting for the world record. It is just their own world
:27:41. > :27:45.record that was set in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games. In a funny
:27:46. > :27:56.way, I would be happy if they didn't quite break it. It would be great to
:27:57. > :28:05.keep the venue in Glasgow as the world record holding venue for the
:28:06. > :28:12.women's relay. Interesting tactics for the Australians. Putting Bronte
:28:13. > :28:18.Campbell in third leg and the world record holder Cate Campbell. My
:28:19. > :28:46.word. She is the anchor leg. A great start in lane five. Simone
:28:47. > :28:47.Manuel. She is new in the final, she did not swim in the heats this
:28:48. > :28:56.morning. She went out very fast. They are going to need the lead.
:28:57. > :29:01.Cate Campbell's world record holding. It would be quite
:29:02. > :29:22.intimidating. Head-to-head, USA and Australia.
:29:23. > :29:31.This is a good swim from Simone Manuel. A great swim, just outside
:29:32. > :29:48.the American record. Canada is just about in third
:29:49. > :29:49.position. They have the 216-year-old in the third and fourth leg. Also
:29:50. > :29:57.going well, Sweden. I have just spotted. The yellow cap
:29:58. > :30:16.on the right. The Americans are not letting the
:30:17. > :30:18.Australians have their own way. They know they need a lead before the
:30:19. > :30:43.Campbell sisters get in. the Australians are now starting to
:30:44. > :30:48.catch up. Bronte Campbell, I would say be slower of the two Campbell
:30:49. > :30:55.sisters. She has court or about half a second up on the first 50 metres.
:30:56. > :31:01.That was a really good lap. Right now, the Campbell sisters are taking
:31:02. > :31:04.it on for Australia. This is a lead that she is going to give to her
:31:05. > :31:13.sister, Cate Campbell, but I do not think is going to be let go. By
:31:14. > :31:23.swimmers are on record. -- both swimmers are on world record. A
:31:24. > :31:29.great swim from the Canadian. To 16 year olds, can they get a medal at
:31:30. > :31:42.the Olympic final of the 100 metre freestyle relay? Can be Canadian
:31:43. > :31:49.catch up? I am not sure, you know. I would like to see the 16 you are we

:32:29. > :32:31.medal to Australia, the silver medal to the USA and the bronze medal to
:32:32. > :32:39.Canada. A massive swing that is for the Canadians. The Canadians had a
:32:40. > :32:43.magnificent performance there, but it is the Australians that take the
:32:44. > :32:49.medal. The second world record of the competition now. The Americans
:32:50. > :32:58.getting a mother record, a national record. A very emotional Cate
:32:59. > :33:08.Campbell. We are just trying to check out some of the splits of this

:33:52. > :33:57.You kissed me when we got a medal, and they are sisters. A brilliant
:33:58. > :34:02.performance from Australia in the women's 100 metre freestyle relay.
:34:03. > :34:09.Final confirmation of that result now, Australia winning in a new
:34:10. > :34:20.world record. USA get the silver and fantastic performance from Canada.
:34:21. > :34:25.That is the final final of the first day of the swimming finals. It kind
:34:26. > :34:32.of gives us an indication of what will happen for the rest of the
:34:33. > :34:40.week. Australia's sisters, they were very impressive, won't they? Yes,
:34:41. > :34:49.that is absolutely incredible. Both sisters under 52 seconds. You can
:34:50. > :34:52.sort of see, I know we joke and say that certain countries had not
:34:53. > :34:59.travelled well, that is our little joke. Sometimes you can see that
:35:00. > :35:04.teams are just not in form, but you can see and we have seen tonight
:35:05. > :35:12.that the Australians are on their a game. They just casually go a 52, so
:35:13. > :35:18.chose that Cate Campbell is in great form. Cate Campbell is a name and
:35:19. > :35:25.the lady we will see a lot more of this week.
:35:26. > :35:32.Adam Peaty is another person will see a lot more of this week in the
:35:33. > :35:39.100 metre breaststroke final. Did you feel you were rushing it too
:35:40. > :35:45.much, the wanting to go in and break that record? No, I mean it did not
:35:46. > :35:51.really feel like an Olympic semi-final. I was just so chilled.
:35:52. > :35:57.Tomorrow, I'm hopefully going to go on a bit more. I feel like there is
:35:58. > :36:03.something more left in the tank. Hopefully, I will catch them up
:36:04. > :36:06.tomorrow. It must give you a great sense of confidence when you know
:36:07. > :36:14.you have got almost a second on everybody in the field over 100
:36:15. > :36:21.metres. Yes. Sport is tough, this sport is a very top sport.
:36:22. > :36:24.Hopefully, I do Team GB Proud tomorrow. Tell me a little bit about
:36:25. > :36:31.what happened when you got back to the Olympic Village today's. It is
:36:32. > :36:40.crazy, and that is what it is all about, the Olympic experience. It is
:36:41. > :36:44.tough coming in from the heats from a world record, so tomorrow morning
:36:45. > :36:52.I will have the morning off. Great to see you. Get some rest. We will
:36:53. > :36:56.see you then. Adam Peaty will no doubt be buzzing and have lots of
:36:57. > :37:00.confidence of those times. How difficult is it to go back into the
:37:01. > :37:05.Olympic village in the two his teammates who maybe did not get the
:37:06. > :37:11.results they wanted tonight? Hannah Miley has such grace about her, she
:37:12. > :37:14.so deserves that medal. I am fairly sure that Adam Peaty will go up and
:37:15. > :37:23.give her a big hug, as will everyone else in the team. The same with Ross
:37:24. > :37:29.or maybe James Guy, who has picked up the 200 metre freestyle tomorrow.
:37:30. > :37:35.He is one of those people you want to be around because he is just so
:37:36. > :37:39.positive. Not just that he performed well here, he is just such a team
:37:40. > :37:51.player. James Wilby a little bit disappointed, but that is his main
:37:52. > :38:03.event. -- James will be. That will be his main event. I think that is a
:38:04. > :38:13.good point to say goodbye. We will be back tomorrow. Helen and the
:38:14. > :38:19.team, thank you very much. So no medals for Team GB in the swimming
:38:20. > :38:30.pool this evening. An interesting footnote as well for Australia. Two
:38:31. > :38:35.gold medals, that followed all kinds of changes in Australian swimming. A
:38:36. > :38:41.big review was conducted, and that review has obviously done the job.
