:01:20. > :02:25.Hello and welcome to Rio and a repeat of last night's action, they

:02:26. > :02:31.one of the 2016 Olympic Games. This is what is coming up over the next

:02:32. > :02:36.few hours. The swimming finals get under way. James Guy is going for

:02:37. > :02:44.gold in the 400 metres freestyle. The 400 metres medley is for Hannah

:02:45. > :02:47.Miley, a podium place inside, alongside Amy Wilmot. Adam Peaty set

:02:48. > :03:01.a world record in the heat in the 100 meter breaststroke. And the Team

:03:02. > :03:06.GB women's hockey team get their campaign under way against old

:03:07. > :03:13.rivals Australia. Before all that we will bring you right up to date with

:03:14. > :03:16.the gymnastics. But it is the swimming finals we are concentrating

:03:17. > :03:24.on, with some big names to look out for.

:03:25. > :03:43.Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian in history. Oh, my goodness

:03:44. > :03:54.me. The goal. The new Olympic champion is Missy Franklin of the

:03:55. > :04:02.USA. Very good swimming indeed. Brilliant swim from Hannah Miley.

:04:03. > :04:07.Kate Campbell gets the gold, Bronte Campbell gets the silver. Carlin

:04:08. > :04:19.gets the gold, what a brilliant swim. Look at that! The gold medal

:04:20. > :04:30.goes to James Guy of Great Britain. Oh, yes. Adam Peaty wins the gold.

:04:31. > :04:40.The Aquatic Centre is part of the newly built Olympic Park to the west

:04:41. > :04:46.of the city centre. Our team is fantastically anchored by Helen

:04:47. > :04:50.Skelton. Good evening. Yes, welcome, I don't think it is

:04:51. > :04:54.too big of a statement to call this the house of fun. In the first

:04:55. > :05:00.session we saw a world record smashed. Adam Peaty, and the place

:05:01. > :05:07.was absolutely rocking. But tonight is all about the medals. In the last

:05:08. > :05:11.couple of hours the podium has been put in place. Somebody will stand on

:05:12. > :05:18.top of that podium as an Olympic champion in the next couple of

:05:19. > :05:22.hours. Rebecca Adlington, Mark Foster, before we did into the

:05:23. > :05:28.specifics of who might be up there, let's talk about the British team in

:05:29. > :05:34.general. Expectations for the week. How often will we see them on the

:05:35. > :05:39.podium? For London we had 40 athletes, this time only 26, so it

:05:40. > :05:46.is a smaller, more focused team. But I think we had chances. In Beijing

:05:47. > :05:50.and London we only got three medals. They were different colours, but

:05:51. > :05:55.still only worth three medals. This time I would like to see more than

:05:56. > :06:01.three. Ross, James Guy, Adam Beattie, jazz, so many medal

:06:02. > :06:07.chances. Hopefully tonight we can get off to a great start and get the

:06:08. > :06:11.ball rolling. Jason hit the nail on the head when he said we would need

:06:12. > :06:19.caffeine to watch this live back in Great Britain. It will be some early

:06:20. > :06:27.mornings. But there are big names putting in huge performances, who

:06:28. > :06:36.should people be staying up for? Michael Phelps, obviously making a

:06:37. > :06:47.comeback. Franklin, and Campbell from Australia, so many to look out

:06:48. > :06:54.for, some big, big names. Adam Peaty is on course to take the title, set

:06:55. > :06:59.your alarm, because he could be our first male Olympic champion since

:07:00. > :07:05.Adrian Moorhouse. If we do not see James Guy or Hannah Miley on that

:07:06. > :07:08.this evening. We cannot talk about swimming without talking about the

:07:09. > :07:18.Russians, it has overshadowed the build-up. They will be on the start

:07:19. > :07:22.list, Yulia Efimova, that will not go down well, she has failed drug

:07:23. > :07:28.tests twice, you are allowed to get off the fence, your opinion,

:07:29. > :07:32.Rebecca? It is tough, we were told they were banned and the fact it has

:07:33. > :07:35.been overturned as disappointing especially when that's quite a lot

:07:36. > :07:40.of athletes in British events, because we feel more passionate, are

:07:41. > :07:46.like, damn you! But it will be interesting to see how the crowd

:07:47. > :07:54.react. I see an opportunity to make a stand. I think that the world

:07:55. > :08:00.governing body, FINA FINA, has been very weak on this, they need to make

:08:01. > :08:03.a stand. We always talk about this, if you test positive it is your

:08:04. > :08:10.responsibility and it should be a lifetime ban. It is not just the

:08:11. > :08:15.Russians. The world champion who we will see in the 400 metres freestyle

:08:16. > :08:20.final. We will also see James Guy in that one. He came away with a gold

:08:21. > :08:21.and silver from the World Championships, he has been talking

:08:22. > :08:42.to Steve Parry. It is very unusual for Olympic

:08:43. > :08:46.athletes to be engaged in fishing. I think so, but I have been doing it

:08:47. > :08:54.for years, I love it, it is a great way to shut down. It is not all

:08:55. > :08:59.about pace. It is about how you present date. How you calm down,

:09:00. > :09:14.relax, and enjoy yourself. -- how you present bait. James Guy, out in

:09:15. > :09:21.front but ... A fantastic silver medal for James Guy! I thought I

:09:22. > :09:31.could maybe steal a medal, get a sneaky third. So to get a silver...

:09:32. > :09:39.I was confident and relaxed. For me it was the goal. The gold medal goes

:09:40. > :09:47.to James Guy, world champion, 200 metres freestyle! The aim was just

:09:48. > :09:56.to go out and have fun. It paid off. To get a medal was pretty special.

:09:57. > :10:01.If I get a personal best that would be medal territory. It would be nice

:10:02. > :10:06.to get a medal obviously. For my sport, my country, to do Team GB

:10:07. > :10:11.proud, and my family, they have done so much, so to pay them back would

:10:12. > :10:16.be special. I have watched Michael Phelps since I was nine years old.

:10:17. > :10:28.To be racing him, to be in the same pool is... I cannot control others

:10:29. > :10:33.do. -- what others do. I have been good in training, feel fit and

:10:34. > :10:37.strong, ready to go. I have waited all my life. And with my family here

:10:38. > :10:44.it is pretty special. You cannot question his calibre, character, or

:10:45. > :10:51.spirit. We saw him today in his heat. It was not his best. That face

:10:52. > :10:57.says it all, Mark. It was a tired swim. He looked a bit heavy toward

:10:58. > :11:05.the end. At the beginning he started really well, look smooth, but he

:11:06. > :11:10.paid for it on the back end. I did not do 400, 800, just one lap, it

:11:11. > :11:18.was easy for me! It can be quite hard work, isn't it? Yes, the thing

:11:19. > :11:22.about games and all the British athletes, we can struggle to swim

:11:23. > :11:26.our best time in the morning, then again in the evening, because we

:11:27. > :11:30.don't have to do that at home. You can swim an average heat and make it

:11:31. > :11:35.into the final. Then you come to a big competition and you have to swim

:11:36. > :11:40.a very fast time then back it up. I would struggle with it. I hold my

:11:41. > :11:44.hands up, I was the same. But it is a shame that he has not implemented

:11:45. > :11:49.what Adam has done in the last few years, swimming quick each round,

:11:50. > :11:53.whereas James has not used that tactic. But it has been working with

:11:54. > :12:01.him, so you say, I will just stick with my own race. He likes to chase.

:12:02. > :12:05.He likes to hurt himself. He does. In April he went two seconds faster

:12:06. > :12:11.than this morning. So there is a lot more from him, if it can come out.

:12:12. > :12:15.And Steven Milne was in the 400 heat, he swam a personal best, but

:12:16. > :12:21.unfortunately missed out in a place in the final. Max Litchfield, his

:12:22. > :12:26.first Olympics final, so, Sheffield, stay up with us, you could see your

:12:27. > :12:31.boy in the final. Hannah Miley, we may also see her in the final. She

:12:32. > :12:37.comes into this event is second-fastest in the world this

:12:38. > :12:41.year. I love swimming. I love being part of the sport. I love my

:12:42. > :12:48.training, being part of the team, it is my main focus, the results will

:12:49. > :12:58.come. Hannah Miley wins gold at the European Championships! It is a

:12:59. > :13:03.silver, well done, Hannah Miley! Great to be able to share it with

:13:04. > :13:10.your daughter. Your father is your full-time coach. How much does that

:13:11. > :13:13.help? It helps having a full-time coach, knowing that when ever you go

:13:14. > :13:17.to your training session you have your courage to train you, keep an

:13:18. > :13:25.eye on you, to pick up and little bits in the water. He would go to

:13:26. > :13:29.work and fly helicopters, and leave our training sessions. Now he is

:13:30. > :13:35.around a lot more which is great from my point of view. Working with

:13:36. > :13:39.him, he can read how I am in the water, change sessions based on how

:13:40. > :13:45.I feel and look, I just get more one to one attention which in the long

:13:46. > :13:48.run is really good. Insomuch as I am the one in the pool it is a

:13:49. > :13:53.reflection of all the hard work and effort and sacrifice the family have

:13:54. > :13:58.made. The whole family are supportive. Not just my father, my

:13:59. > :14:03.mother and my brothers, we are all one unit that works really closely

:14:04. > :14:11.together. Hannah Miley wins a gold for Scotland, what a start at the

:14:12. > :14:13.Commonwealth Games! Having won the Commonwealth and European titles,

:14:14. > :14:18.and World Championships, what would it mean to finally get an Olympic

:14:19. > :14:22.medal? I would love to be able to say at the end of it, we have done

:14:23. > :14:27.it. It is the dream of every athlete to win a medal. But the journey so

:14:28. > :14:34.far, what I have learned, I help come, it has kind of change my

:14:35. > :14:38.perspective -- who I have become. A medal would be amazing, but it is

:14:39. > :14:44.not like finishing a computer game, like, now what? The journey would

:14:45. > :14:47.not stop there. I would love that medal and would not train without

:14:48. > :14:52.the dream of being on the podium but I do not see it as being the end,

:14:53. > :14:58.the final achievement. There is so much more afterwards, to achieve. If

:14:59. > :15:05.my child likes me half as much as Hannah likes her dad I would be so

:15:06. > :15:11.happy. It is an incredible bond. I saw her once and she said, my dad is

:15:12. > :15:16.my hero. As a parent, that breaks your heart, right? Yes, and Patrick

:15:17. > :15:22.just loves the sport, her dad and her coach. He is so passionate. I

:15:23. > :15:28.remember him doing it with me, I was like, it's OK, you are not my dad!

:15:29. > :15:34.But they do have that talents. They have squabbles. But it is what makes

:15:35. > :15:39.them stronger. They work really well together and they have tried so many

:15:40. > :15:43.different things. For Hannah to stay at the top of her game, a third

:15:44. > :15:48.Olympics, it is credit to them as a team.

:15:49. > :15:55.If you are an American film-maker, she trains with her brothers in a

:15:56. > :16:00.small pool. It is an endearing setup. It is. A lot of other people

:16:01. > :16:05.couldn't do it. Patrick's attention to detail is second to none. He even

:16:06. > :16:08.invented this device you put inside your hat that gives you stroke tempo

:16:09. > :16:13.rates. As you are swimming, it bleeps when you put your arm in the

:16:14. > :16:17.water. He came up with that concept and it became... I can't think of

:16:18. > :16:21.the word. That invention. They use that an awful lot. The whole family

:16:22. > :16:26.setup is, her brother is the person who pushes her in training every

:16:27. > :16:29.day. He is her training partner. It is very intense, but at the same

:16:30. > :16:34.time, when you get those sort of results, it is heart-warming. She

:16:35. > :16:37.has a world medal, a European model, a Commonwealth medal, she does not

:16:38. > :16:47.have an Olympic medal yet. Stiff competition, though. I think it was

:16:48. > :16:50.the Katinka show this morning. She absolutely dominated from the start.

:16:51. > :16:55.Just from the start of this morning, she was a full body length up from

:16:56. > :17:01.Hanna just off the start. She is so powerful and so strong and she

:17:02. > :17:08.wanted the world record. I am expecting that to go tonight. Not

:17:09. > :17:12.just Hanna in this event, Aimee Willmott also available. Second

:17:13. > :17:21.generation Olympian. They both have a good chance. Dorado and Belmonte

:17:22. > :17:24.and I think Miley and Wilmots together, those four, that could be

:17:25. > :17:31.where the medals come from, the silver and bronze. Aimee looks tidy

:17:32. > :17:37.this morning. The strokes are really good. She paced the race so much

:17:38. > :17:42.better. Hannah needs to get out a bit easier on the fly and be with

:17:43. > :17:49.them a bit more. Miley is going to be down the bottom in five and six

:17:50. > :17:53.with Del Monte and it will be very interesting. Stick with us if you

:17:54. > :17:56.want to see whether Hanna will finally get the Olympic medal to add

:17:57. > :18:04.to her collection. This is how things are shaping up. 2am, 3am,

:18:05. > :18:14.guys. Come on! I would get up to see Adam Peaty. Another world record.

:18:15. > :18:22.Ross Murdoch in the first, Adam Peaty in the second. Can he get

:18:23. > :18:27.faster? Why not? If these guys can do the training, people can get up

:18:28. > :18:31.to watch them. That heat this morning was pretty special. That was

:18:32. > :18:39.a phenomenal world record. Anything is possible with this guy. He wasn't

:18:40. > :18:42.even out of breath. He wasn't even out of breath and took the

:18:43. > :18:45.opportunity to talk about inspiring the next generation of swimmers. If

:18:46. > :18:51.you have children, tonight is the night to let them stay up all night.

:18:52. > :18:55.My kids will already be awake at that time. Joking aside, we talk

:18:56. > :19:00.about inspiring the next generation, we've talked to Adrian about the

:19:01. > :19:06.Duncan Goodhew Lowe, this is something special tonight. It is no

:19:07. > :19:10.surprise we have this history of Olympic champions and you have

:19:11. > :19:14.inspirations in that event. It is likely, Rebecca Adlington. We have a

:19:15. > :19:24.duty Wilmots, Hardcastle, Rebecca Adlington. We have always had good

:19:25. > :19:28.people. 20 of reasons to stay up tonight. Everyone loves swimming. I

:19:29. > :19:33.live and breed swimming. The feeling of water is unlike anything else.

:19:34. > :19:39.Since I was a young girl I used to just love being in the pool, racing

:19:40. > :19:45.and having fun. There is something inside me that told me I could be

:19:46. > :19:48.fast. Shows you are good and you care about something. I have spent

:19:49. > :19:53.my life training for this moment. If I didn't care, it would be silly. I

:19:54. > :19:56.want to push myself to the limit, it is as simple as that. It is

:19:57. > :20:01.everything to every athlete. You need to put everything into each

:20:02. > :20:04.round to have yourself in that final. I have wanted it so much for

:20:05. > :20:07.so long and I am going there to be on the podium and I will go out

:20:08. > :20:14.there and give it absolutely everything.

:20:15. > :20:19.Lots of love for the swimming already. We shall be back with Helen

:20:20. > :20:25.and her marvellous team in the Aquatics Centre just before 2pm. We

:20:26. > :20:30.will focus on Team GB's women in the hockey, taking on Australia, old

:20:31. > :20:34.rivals, in a few minutes. Let's remind you what happened when the

:20:35. > :20:40.men got their Olympic Games campaign underway against Belgium. Great

:20:41. > :20:46.Britain looking for a way out. Slightly trapped in the corner here.

:20:47. > :20:51.Pushed all the way back and an intercept from Belgium. They are

:20:52. > :21:02.threatening. First goal of the match to Belgium.

:21:03. > :21:14.Jackson was claiming he was impeded, but no matter.

:21:15. > :21:43.Oh, what a strike! What a goal for Great Britain. Superbly put away.

:21:44. > :22:10.An open goal, he couldn't have missed.

:22:11. > :22:14.A very disappointing start for our men in the hockey and they have to

:22:15. > :22:19.bounce back. They take on New Zealand. That is tomorrow. What lies

:22:20. > :22:32.in store for our women? Big game coming up tonight against Australia.

:22:33. > :22:37.Touchdown on the post, absolutely brilliant. When I look back to the

:22:38. > :22:44.London Olympics, it feels like I'm watching a movie and someone else is

:22:45. > :22:47.in it. It is surreal. The home games in London was so spectacular. The

:22:48. > :22:52.biggest thing you learn on the world stage, it is the small margins make

:22:53. > :22:56.a huge difference. I look at games under high pressure. The difference

:22:57. > :23:00.between winning and losing can be tiny, making a tackle or making an

:23:01. > :23:07.opportunity. What a comeback this has been! It's a really different

:23:08. > :23:11.group, this group compared to the one that went to the London Olympic

:23:12. > :23:16.Games. Some of those players have been through the London cycle and

:23:17. > :23:19.have the experience. The young players still don't know what they

:23:20. > :23:24.don't know. Having the older players to guide them and men to them

:23:25. > :23:28.through the ups and downs of the Olympics is absolutely fundamental.

:23:29. > :23:33.How do you feel about going to what will be your fourth Olympics? I

:23:34. > :23:38.remember getting my first cap in 99 so very clearly. There is no way in

:23:39. > :23:49.a million years I thought I would be here. I feel very lucky and

:23:50. > :23:53.privileged. I am a mother hen. I was lucky round the face and give you a

:23:54. > :23:58.hug. I just care. We spend so much time with each other, become so

:23:59. > :24:01.involved in each other's lives, you really care about the person on the

:24:02. > :24:13.pitch and the person off the pitch, which makes you tight as a group.

:24:14. > :24:21.I was kind of hoping someone younger might get in and shovel those jobs

:24:22. > :24:26.to them, but I guess I am the baby. Can you describe the pure excitement

:24:27. > :24:31.of being part of an Olympic squad? Unbelievable. I remember reading the

:24:32. > :24:35.e-mail and I could not hold it in. It was just such an amazing moment

:24:36. > :24:40.and that day I could finally just think about the Olympics. I 100%

:24:41. > :24:44.believe we can win a medal without a doubt. We have shown that we are

:24:45. > :24:47.very much medal contenders, but it will be incredibly tough. I think

:24:48. > :24:51.the world of women's hockey has grown and the top six sides are all

:24:52. > :24:55.able to beat each other, which makes for an exciting Olympic Games. We

:24:56. > :25:05.will have to be on our best to compete for a medal, but we are more

:25:06. > :25:08.than capable of doing it. To win a gold medal would be everything. I

:25:09. > :25:20.and most people here really want it. So, let's had lied to the Olympic

:25:21. > :25:22.Hockey Centre you north of the Olympic Park and join our match

:25:23. > :25:32.commentary team. Good evening. The eagerly

:25:33. > :25:40.anticipated clash of Great Britain and Australia. First match for both

:25:41. > :25:45.teams, pool B. Win or lose, ultimately may not make too much

:25:46. > :25:50.difference, but the rivalry over many years between these two sides

:25:51. > :25:55.means that this being a pool match has added zest and plenty of

:25:56. > :26:02.importance. Australia in the green and gold will be hitting from left

:26:03. > :26:09.to right. Great Britain playing in all red tonight.

:26:10. > :26:16.It is a still evening. We have hot temperatures today, 36 degrees pitch

:26:17. > :26:26.side mid-afternoon. It is a 125 now with 50% humidity. The middle of

:26:27. > :26:32.winter, it feels like a hot day. Australia get things under way.

:26:33. > :26:38.Good evening, Mao. We have both been excited about this fixture. We

:26:39. > :26:42.certainly have. It is a cracking day for Great Britain to start their

:26:43. > :26:47.Olympic campaign. As you say, there is a lot of rivalry between these

:26:48. > :26:52.two. They have played a Test match against each other in February and

:26:53. > :26:59.then in June. It'll be interesting to see who can get the upper. --

:27:00. > :27:13.upper hand. New format with the time these days

:27:14. > :27:16.in hockey. We play four quarters of 15 minutes each. Ten minute break

:27:17. > :27:22.for half-time after the second quarter. A slightly shorter game in

:27:23. > :27:35.total, but a much more exciting one as a result of rule changes.

:27:36. > :27:40.You can feel the tension around the arena. Plenty of Australian

:27:41. > :27:46.supporters in. Lots of union Jacks around. Pitch one at the Diadora

:27:47. > :28:16.hockey arena and a clash of sticks there.

:28:17. > :28:20.That is a great start by Great Britain. The intensity with which

:28:21. > :28:24.they have started is nothing worse than being in the Olympic Village

:28:25. > :28:28.and waiting for the last game of the day to start. So far, so good from

:28:29. > :28:32.the girls, and it is great to see them playing with such positivity.

:28:33. > :28:38.The men didn't have such a positive start earlier today. They lost 4-1

:28:39. > :28:52.to an inspired Belgian side. It is the direct plate that is

:28:53. > :28:57.really good from Great Britain. Often we see them tentative, they

:28:58. > :29:01.get the ball higher up the pitch and play backwards. To see Alex Danson

:29:02. > :29:02.so high up in the field and being given that opportunity so early on

:29:03. > :29:27.is a positive sign again. Crista Cullen took time out after

:29:28. > :29:33.the London Olympics but has returned to the squad now, eager to improve

:29:34. > :29:36.on that third place four years ago. Great Britain with the lion's share

:29:37. > :29:44.of possession in the early stages here.

:29:45. > :29:51.It is almost any style you are used to seeing from Australia, putting

:29:52. > :29:56.the opposition under pressure from the word go, yet they have struggled

:29:57. > :29:59.to get into any kind of routine. These are the things which from a

:30:00. > :30:05.British perspective gives you some hope. Down the right, Australia

:30:06. > :30:10.looking for a way through to the edge of the circle. Flicked under

:30:11. > :30:14.the British stick, but the pressure is relieved as Great Britain, way.

:30:15. > :30:24.Down the left-hand side, Hannah McLeod. With Australian shirts all

:30:25. > :30:28.around her. Back they go. A good interception. Australia looking

:30:29. > :30:39.dangerous. Taken all the way through .Mac and in the end it is a hand

:30:40. > :30:53.away from Hitch. Free hit for Australia. Nice work, good

:30:54. > :30:58.interception. She has definitely got a good eye for a ball and made that

:30:59. > :31:06.look very easy. The Australian skipper on the march forward. Jodie

:31:07. > :31:15.Kenny, try to put in the cross. Kenny, asking for it on the right,

:31:16. > :31:29.should get it, tackled, but it is still Australia in possession.

:31:30. > :31:33.Kirsten Dwyer for Australia. Gets in the cross, a chance for a shot on

:31:34. > :31:43.goal, pinch comes out sharply to save. -- Hinch. No penalty corner.

:31:44. > :31:53.Great Britain got away with it. They can break now... That has been two

:31:54. > :31:59.sites at goal for Australia. Slattery with a snapshot, then Emily

:32:00. > :32:05.Smith. This is a Smith, it is fantastic play by Hinch to take it

:32:06. > :32:09.on the face mask. She is so quick to close down the angles and could be

:32:10. > :32:15.the key to British success in this tournament. Australia playing at

:32:16. > :32:21.real pace, that is good work, it needs some sharp defence. A free

:32:22. > :32:24.hit, outside of the circle. Great Britain and a little bit of

:32:25. > :32:36.pressure, with just over nine minutes of the first period to play.

:32:37. > :32:41.Turn, blocked... It is in. I think it is potentially dangerous play.

:32:42. > :32:51.The ball in front Dwyer, half touch, and it strikes Cullen above the

:32:52. > :32:55.knee, which should be given to the defender, but Australia are building

:32:56. > :33:10.momentum and getting into their stride now.

:33:11. > :33:19.Now, Great Britain with a chance to put a bit of pressure on the

:33:20. > :33:23.Australian defence, but it comes to nothing. A cagey start between the

:33:24. > :33:31.teams as they check each other out during the opening exchanges. I

:33:32. > :33:34.think it is just two teams who know each other really well and want to

:33:35. > :33:46.get points on the board in their first game. Number one, in team

:33:47. > :33:49.sports, usually worn by the goalkeeper, but warned by an

:33:50. > :33:59.outfield player. Lynch, the goalkeeper for Australia, whereas

:34:00. > :34:04.27. Emulating Dwyer, with -- Jamie Dwyer, with his number one. An

:34:05. > :34:12.appeal for the free hit, but nothing given. Down-the-line, a beautiful

:34:13. > :34:17.pass. They keep up with face as they approach the circle, requiring a

:34:18. > :34:25.little shuffle to the side from Unsworth.

:34:26. > :34:38.Unsworth does well. Maintains British possession.

:34:39. > :34:44.A bit of a scramble but Great Britain come away with it.

:34:45. > :34:50.Opportunities here. Australia are having to backtrack in reverse. It

:34:51. > :35:03.is held up, and it will be an Australian free hit. On the ball

:35:04. > :35:08.Owsley has phenomenal pace, she was a great athlete before being picked

:35:09. > :35:13.up by Great Britain hockey. Alex Danson stretching the midfield

:35:14. > :35:16.really well. Williams doing the hard work, gets the free hit, and

:35:17. > :35:26.Australia slow it down and switch sides. Kirsten Dwyer. Cut out by

:35:27. > :35:28.Alex Danson. Triple away inside. A good crossfield pass. Red shirts I

:35:29. > :35:47.had. Unsworth. Inside to Twigg who loses out but

:35:48. > :35:53.Great Britain have it again, down the left-hand side, and it goes out

:35:54. > :36:01.of danger as far as Australia are concerned. Just the final ball is

:36:02. > :36:06.letting down Great Britain. But really positive signs. The players

:36:07. > :36:14.are getting on the ball and certainly from what we have seen the

:36:15. > :36:27.girls look up for the game tonight. Just over five minutes of the first

:36:28. > :36:32.period to play. 0-0. This match between two old rivals. Not the

:36:33. > :36:37.cleanest hit from yours truly in midfield. Great Britain, the

:36:38. > :36:44.beneficiaries. Nice little break on the left-hand side from the colour

:36:45. > :36:49.white. She leaves it... Still British possession. The ball falls

:36:50. > :36:55.nicely for Helen Richardson-Walsh. Alex Danson, familiar bursting run,

:36:56. > :37:06.just about keeping Great Britain in possession, but the green and gold

:37:07. > :37:10.are back to tidy up. Alex Danson, she can be such a dangerous

:37:11. > :37:15.playmaker for Great Britain. She can turn a match. And here she is again.

:37:16. > :37:20.Clocks it out of the air, fancies a solo run... The shot... Kicked away

:37:21. > :37:26.by the Australian goalkeeper, Rachel Lynch. She will definitely be

:37:27. > :37:30.pivotal for Great Britain in this tournament. On her backhand that

:37:31. > :37:34.would have been in the back of the net, she is phenomenal on that side,

:37:35. > :37:51.but good to see her get a shot away on goal. Tidied up. That is out

:37:52. > :38:01.today. Tidied up by Webb but the pass was less impressive. One of

:38:02. > :38:09.yours truly and forward, Emily Smith, in space. -- one of the

:38:10. > :38:17.Australian forwards. The first period has been exciting from the

:38:18. > :38:25.first whistle. Just over three minutes to play. Still no score.

:38:26. > :38:29.Great Britain 0-0 Australia. Australia, with a bit of space.

:38:30. > :38:35.Forcing their way through to the circle. There are no green and gold

:38:36. > :38:42.shirts, that gives Great Britain time and breathing space on the

:38:43. > :38:52.left. That was a missed cue from Helen Richardson-Walsh. Georgina

:38:53. > :39:04.Morgan, all the way back. Good control. Bounced over the top

:39:05. > :39:11.of the Great Britain stick. Now they look for a way out. The ball

:39:12. > :39:16.bouncing kindly for Australia. Two Australians in the circle. Now

:39:17. > :39:24.three. Pressing forward, looking for a chance to win a penalty corner.

:39:25. > :39:29.They appeal for it. The umpire was having none of it. Will there be a

:39:30. > :39:39.referral? Emily Smith knew straightaway. It looked like it came

:39:40. > :39:43.off the leg of Cullen. We are heading to the video umpire. Each

:39:44. > :39:54.side gets one referral per match, get it right, keep it, get it wrong,

:39:55. > :40:01.lose it. The video umpire... We can just see it come off the stick of

:40:02. > :40:08.Cullen onto her leg, so it should not take long to make the decision.

:40:09. > :40:16.That was a foul by GB. It is a penalty corner. Australia keep the

:40:17. > :40:20.referral. It all works out perfectly for Australia, they get the penalty

:40:21. > :40:25.corner and keep the referral. So time for Great Britain to put on the

:40:26. > :40:31.facemask and protective gear and try to defend this penalty corner. The

:40:32. > :40:38.Australians have got their top team at the top of the circle. Jody Kenny

:40:39. > :40:43.and Georgina Morgan off the top, numbers are seven and 17. The

:40:44. > :40:46.likelihood is it will be Jodie Kenny, with the first corner of the

:40:47. > :40:59.tournament. But Australia have got some routines. There will be a trap

:41:00. > :41:04.and a possible drag flick, then the attempt towards goal. Here we go,

:41:05. > :41:09.first of the match, just over two minutes to play. We'll Australia

:41:10. > :41:15.head into the break with a 1-0 lead? Brilliant, brave defensive hit by

:41:16. > :41:22.Cullen but she is on the deck and they will need to be stopped because

:41:23. > :41:26.she took that hard. I do not think there's anyone braver and the hockey

:41:27. > :41:31.field than the one runner. They try to get as close to the ball as

:41:32. > :41:39.possible. The goalkeeper takes one side and the number one runner takes

:41:40. > :41:47.the other. Cullen, in a bit of trouble. But she is back on her

:41:48. > :41:51.knees. Bravely getting herself back to her feet. She may spend the rest

:41:52. > :42:02.of the period on the bench, getting some attention. There it is. The arm

:42:03. > :42:11.or the ribs. Potentially ribs. Both, possibly. And she is jogging off

:42:12. > :42:17.now! Hard as nails. I tell you what, next corner, she will still run as

:42:18. > :42:26.number one. Shin pads, gum shields, that is about it. Brilliant defence

:42:27. > :42:34.from Cullen, foiling the Australian penalty corner attempt. The scores

:42:35. > :42:41.remain level with 90 seconds to play. Australia, fancying one more

:42:42. > :42:48.push toward the Great Britain goal. But that is intercepted. A change of

:42:49. > :42:58.direction, looking for a way out of this little puzzle. Good play.

:42:59. > :43:03.Sophie Bray. Good skills. One hand on the stick, all the way into the

:43:04. > :43:12.corner, looking for Susanna Townsend. Australia are working

:43:13. > :43:24.well, combining nicely. That is a waste from Holly Webb. It has been a

:43:25. > :43:29.really absorbing first quarter. I know there have not been any girls

:43:30. > :43:33.but both teams are trying to win the three points. It has not been overly

:43:34. > :43:37.cagey, there have been opportunities, you would argue

:43:38. > :43:41.Australia have had the best of them, but from a British perspective,

:43:42. > :43:46.still very positive. Can Great Britain get reward for their efforts

:43:47. > :43:50.in the remaining seconds of the first quarter? That looks like

:43:51. > :43:54.Australia cleaned it up. But Great Britain have 15 seconds to do some

:43:55. > :43:59.damage. This has got to go forward. Pushed into the circle. And a

:44:00. > :44:07.penalty corner appeal... Nothing Gavin. That will be the final play

:44:08. > :44:12.of the quarter. -- nothing given. Seconds left, Australia will round

:44:13. > :44:17.it off with a run toward the corner. The first period of play ends

:44:18. > :44:23.scoreless here at the Olympic Park. Great Britain 0-0 Australia.

:44:24. > :44:34.We shall be back very shortly for the start of the second quarter,

:44:35. > :44:40.meantime, welcome back to Copacabana and our wonderful studio at the Rio

:44:41. > :44:48.Olympics. A look at what is happening elsewhere, the women's

:44:49. > :44:55.singles tennis, Venus Williams is up against Kirsten Flipkens, Williams

:44:56. > :45:01.took the first set but Kirsten Flipkens is right back in it,

:45:02. > :45:06.winning the second. And weightlifting... A pretty big

:45:07. > :45:10.tournament for China. The 48 kilograms gold medal, China have

:45:11. > :45:14.taken gold in the past two Olympic Games and should continue that run

:45:15. > :45:21.tonight. That is available on BBC Four. All of these events are

:45:22. > :45:24.available online as well. If you want to table tennis, the women's

:45:25. > :45:35.singles is available on the Red Button. Many ways to keep in touch.

:45:36. > :45:41.To help you make even more of your real 2016 Olympic Games, from boxing

:45:42. > :45:45.to badminton, hockey to handball, we have it all covered right here on

:45:46. > :45:50.the BBC. Alongside coverage on BBC One, BBC Four and radio five live,

:45:51. > :45:56.you can access up to 24 live warts on the BBC sport website, or via the

:45:57. > :45:59.BBC sport application on mobile, connected TVs and games consoles.

:46:00. > :46:03.The very best will be available on the Red Button via satellite, cable

:46:04. > :46:08.or a free view, dependent on your set top box or your TV receiver. If

:46:09. > :46:12.that is not enough, you can download the BBC sport at, where you can set

:46:13. > :46:13.up news and metal alerts and live event reminders so you can follow

:46:14. > :46:24.all of your favourite sports. Red Button, online, here on BBC One,

:46:25. > :46:27.BBC Four, we have the Olympics covered. We are about to get the

:46:28. > :46:33.second quarter under way. Let's go back to Matt and mouth.

:46:34. > :46:42.Great Britain hitting from right-to-left. No score yet, but it

:46:43. > :46:54.has been an absorbing first period of play.

:46:55. > :47:03.Crista Cullen took one in the ribs as she attempted to defend a corner.

:47:04. > :47:07.I assumed she would not be back for the second quarter, but she is out

:47:08. > :47:09.there. Crista Cullen thankfully, from the British point of view, is

:47:10. > :47:21.in good shape. It's good to see her out there. She

:47:22. > :47:23.is tall and strong but also gives an aerial threat when Great Britain are

:47:24. > :47:58.trained to outlet. Grace Stewart only made her debut

:47:59. > :48:02.this year. Ten goals in 22 games. She is only young. Another

:48:03. > :48:24.world-class forward. Another brave bit of defending from

:48:25. > :48:32.Great Britain. Laura Unsworth got in the way. She OK, shrugs it off and

:48:33. > :48:36.gets on with the game. Grace Stewart, just as she comes towards

:48:37. > :48:43.Hollie Webb, manages to get the ball up in the air. Maddie Hinch was so

:48:44. > :48:55.quick off the goal-line. Final match of Day one of the

:48:56. > :49:01.Olympic hockey tournament here at the Deodoro Stadium. Half time is

:49:02. > :49:13.9.5 minutes away. There is a penalty corner for

:49:14. > :49:18.Australia. They are all a bit confused with the stick dropped onto

:49:19. > :49:23.the turf, and as a result, the ball hit a British foot. Australia will

:49:24. > :49:28.get a penalty corner. Great Britain could easily have cleared that ball.

:49:29. > :49:34.Laura Unsworth and Crista Cullen got tangled up. Australia managed to put

:49:35. > :49:48.the ball on to have fought for a penalty corner. It will be

:49:49. > :49:54.interesting to see if they shift the traps like they did the first time.

:49:55. > :50:01.Penalty corner number two for the Australians. The British defenders

:50:02. > :50:31.got a touch on that. It has been given for a third party

:50:32. > :50:34.obstruction. Not 100% surge in myself, but you have to play what

:50:35. > :50:39.the umpire sees and unfortunately for Great Britain, that was a great

:50:40. > :50:58.opportunity, but fantastic interplay by Helen Richardson-Walsh.

:50:59. > :51:07.That was off the heel of a British player. No penalty corner given.

:51:08. > :51:12.Helen Richardson-Walsh has hobbled over to the bench, so hopefully she

:51:13. > :51:13.hasn't done anything or too much damage. The physio and Doctor are

:51:14. > :51:28.with her already. Unsworth has had an excellent first

:51:29. > :51:30.half. First X minutes of the first half to play, but she has been

:51:31. > :51:45.fantastic so far. That was spectacularly pushed away

:51:46. > :51:50.from the Grace Stewart shot. Brilliant play by Williams on the

:51:51. > :51:52.backhand. Fantastic for someone of 19 years of age. Hinch is

:51:53. > :52:11.outstanding. Such a good ball in by Kate

:52:12. > :52:15.Richardson-Walsh and it needed a centre forward to post up on the

:52:16. > :52:19.edge of the circle. Get a touch and it is a nightmare for an Australian

:52:20. > :52:20.defender to try to track the ball. It is all Great Britain at the

:52:21. > :52:41.moment. Great Britain first to score. Lily

:52:42. > :52:43.Owsley hits from close range. The scoreboard is showing Australia one,

:52:44. > :52:50.Great Britain zero. That will shortly be corrected. It was a

:52:51. > :53:02.fantastic ball in by Hollie Webb. That was a calm finish by Lily

:53:03. > :53:09.Owsley and you can see what it means to the team. Rachael Lynch has been

:53:10. > :53:14.a spectator for most of the first half and now she's picking the ball

:53:15. > :53:18.out of the net. Cool heads required from Great Britain. They would love

:53:19. > :53:29.to go into the extended break with one goal advantage.

:53:30. > :53:34.They have got a penalty corner straight after the goal was scored.

:53:35. > :53:42.Australia back on the attack and get the reward. Their third penalty

:53:43. > :53:47.corner of the game. It is a fantastic piece of skill by Smith

:53:48. > :54:00.there. As harsh as this finds Buttler sounds, Kate

:54:01. > :54:03.Richardson-Walsh... It is an opportunity for Australia to get

:54:04. > :54:09.back on to level terms. Third penalty corner of the match for

:54:10. > :54:20.Australia. They failed to convert on the two previous attempts.

:54:21. > :54:42.Hannah Macleod does well to cover one side, but that absolutely went

:54:43. > :54:44.flying. I'm not sure whether Laura Unsworth got a touch on that as the

:54:45. > :54:54.post player. Not content with a 1-0 lead at

:54:55. > :55:01.half-time, Great Britain want to add to that and make it two.

:55:02. > :55:08.The umpire is just explaining a decision. Wants its taken from

:55:09. > :55:10.outside the 23 metre line. Which now means Hollie Webb can play directly

:55:11. > :55:32.into the circle. A 2-0 lead at half-time would be a

:55:33. > :55:35.magnificent effort from Great Britain as they try to force their

:55:36. > :55:41.way through, and Australia get possession. So important for Great

:55:42. > :55:47.Britain at ago in at half-time with the lead. Danny Kerry has his

:55:48. > :55:50.tactics spot on today. The girls have executed everything he has

:55:51. > :55:51.wanted from them, but he will not be satisfied. He will want more from

:55:52. > :56:24.this squad in the second half. Australia have more than one minute

:56:25. > :56:28.to finish the half with a flourish. Great Britain just keep doing this.

:56:29. > :56:31.Intercepting these passes, pushing the ball out of play. That will

:56:32. > :56:33.probably be enough to see them into the break with a 1-0 lead. Inside

:56:34. > :56:48.the final 60 seconds now. Georgina Morgan has come closest so

:56:49. > :57:25.far for Australia. Good hustling, good tackling. The

:57:26. > :57:31.team know it is nearly over. Waiting for the future now. Verities. The

:57:32. > :57:38.end of an absorbing first half. -- there it is. Australia had three

:57:39. > :57:48.penalty corners, but with no reward, and the Great Britain goal came

:57:49. > :57:51.courtesy of Lily Owsley. There is more to come, but at the break,

:57:52. > :57:56.Great Britain lead Australia by one goal to nil.

:57:57. > :58:02.I told you it would be worth staying up for. Well done to Team GB. Lily

:58:03. > :58:06.Owsley one of the sport's rising stars. She won an award just a few

:58:07. > :58:10.months ago and played hockey for Birmingham University. We will be

:58:11. > :58:11.back with the hockey in just under ten minutes. It is time to dive into

:58:12. > :58:40.the pool. So, this is how we are lining up

:58:41. > :58:45.this evening. The men's 400 metre individual medley final. Max

:58:46. > :58:52.Litchfield is taking part in that at around three minutes past two. The

:58:53. > :59:00.women's butterfly semifinal at around 2:15pm. -- to 15 AM.

:59:01. > :59:11.James Guy is hoping for glory tonight. Keep your eyes open for

:59:12. > :59:27.Hannah Miley and Aimee Willmott. We are now going to turn our

:59:28. > :59:32.attention to the men's gymnastics because there have been lots of

:59:33. > :59:35.events today, both in the team and individual. Let's talk to our man

:59:36. > :59:42.who has kept his eye on that, David McDaid. Let's start with our big

:59:43. > :59:48.names. Max Whitlock, how did he do? He is simply Great Britain's

:59:49. > :59:52.gymnastics superstar. He is the world champion, won that in Glasgow

:59:53. > :59:57.in November and came here with hopes of the first ever British gymnastics

:59:58. > :00:00.gold medal. Today he was part of that team qualifying as well as the

:00:01. > :00:05.individual apparatus qualifying. He started off very well on the floor,

:00:06. > :00:10.got four scores of 15 and into the pommel where we really hope that he

:00:11. > :00:15.or Louis Smith can get that first of our Olympic men's gold. Max Whitlock

:00:16. > :00:20.did very well, got a score of 15.8 to leave him top in that

:00:21. > :00:26.qualification standings. He is looking in really good shape to get

:00:27. > :00:29.that first ever gold. He did have a couple of slip-ups later on in his

:00:30. > :00:33.routine in the vault when he got below 14 and then had a fall on the

:00:34. > :00:37.high bar. That left him 12 in the all-around standings, through to the

:00:38. > :00:41.final and certainly something to work on.

:00:42. > :00:55.What about the rest of the team, and Louis Smith? He was only a tenth

:00:56. > :00:58.behind, getting 15.7. It really is between Louis Smith and Max Whitlock

:00:59. > :01:07.for the gold medal, hopefully a British 1-2. Elsewhere we have seven

:01:08. > :01:18.medal chances on the individual apparatus, Max Whitlock is joined by

:01:19. > :01:22.Nigel Wilson, and goes in for final alongside Christian Thomas. So you

:01:23. > :01:33.have seven chances for individual medals here. So many fantastic

:01:34. > :01:39.performance from the home nations at the Commonwealth Games, but what

:01:40. > :01:42.about the team event? Qualification was a good achievement in itself but

:01:43. > :01:46.what we have seen tonight is that the other nations who Great Britain

:01:47. > :01:54.beat to the World Championship silver medal in Glasgow have really

:01:55. > :02:00.got their game. China topping the standings, USA's second, then

:02:01. > :02:04.Russia, Japan, then Great Britain. So Great Britain has work to do,

:02:05. > :02:08.make no mistake about it, but there are things they can put right,

:02:09. > :02:13.Monday. They just need to do what they did, maybe a little bit better,

:02:14. > :02:20.then perhaps another Olympic team medal can be theirs. Good to talk to

:02:21. > :02:21.you. And the women's gymnastics get under way tomorrow. A reminder of

:02:22. > :02:34.the big stories today. Adam Peaty sets a world record in

:02:35. > :02:41.the 100 metres breaststroke heat, his semifinal coming up later. Not

:02:42. > :02:45.to be for Great Britain in the men's road race. Derek Thomas crashing

:02:46. > :03:03.out, Chris Froome never really in it, the race was won by Belgium's

:03:04. > :03:07.Greg van Avermaet. The Great Britain men's hockey team thrashed by

:03:08. > :03:12.Belgium, 4-1. Ginny Thrasher of America took the first gold medal in

:03:13. > :03:23.the games, a surprise victory in the women's ten metres air rifle. And

:03:24. > :03:27.the Brazilian shooter Felipe Almeida Wu took silver, the first medal for

:03:28. > :03:33.the hosts, in the men's ten metres air pistol. Before we return to the

:03:34. > :03:37.hockey, let's show you what life is like in the Olympic Village. So many

:03:38. > :03:42.athletes living side-by-side, we went for a look around.

:03:43. > :03:48.Here we are in the athletes village. 10,000 athletes from more than 200

:03:49. > :03:56.countries around the world. This is the first step to winning gold. Not

:03:57. > :04:10.least for our friends at Team GB towers. Let's look at how on.

:04:11. > :04:17.The rugby sevens girls are in the house. And they are in pretty good

:04:18. > :04:23.spirits. Why wouldn't they be? They have got union Jack deck chairs. I

:04:24. > :04:29.love what you have done with the place. The great thing is you pretty

:04:30. > :04:34.much get a bare space and it is your allotment to do which would like

:04:35. > :04:42.with it. Let in Mark? He is up there. Give us a wave, guys. Have

:04:43. > :04:48.you not got work to do? The spirits seem really good. It is a great

:04:49. > :05:02.buzz. Everybody is really excited to be her. Max and Nile Wilson,

:05:03. > :05:08.welcome. However you getting on? It has been really good, we are looking

:05:09. > :05:11.forward to it. What is great about the village is that if you ever get

:05:12. > :05:18.lost, follow the flags. Check it out. Canada, loud and proud, taking

:05:19. > :05:25.over that tower block. Over here, the Scandinavian quarter. Denmark,

:05:26. > :05:34.Finland, and Sweden. Over here, Portugal, and up top, Slovenia.

:05:35. > :05:49.Feeling the love. Very good. That is what it is all about. That is

:05:50. > :05:58.lovely. Go on, out you get. Thank you. This sport will be used quite a

:05:59. > :06:05.lot by the contingent. Yes, we have set it up and will have over 10,000

:06:06. > :06:13.minutes worth of treatment per day. All of the sports are encouraged to

:06:14. > :06:23.use it. This way. Look, a person, hiding! You never know who you will

:06:24. > :06:31.find. There they are. Good to see you. Richard, I have to ask you

:06:32. > :06:37.about these guys. Your team, the Rio 2016 team. You are a tight group,

:06:38. > :06:45.are due? Yes, we train and compete together. We have been bonding

:06:46. > :06:57.really well. So far we have had no major issues. Here we are. Do you

:06:58. > :07:04.mind if I...? Be my guest. It has actually been changed today, nice

:07:05. > :07:10.and clean. If this is anything like London, many of the athletes will be

:07:11. > :07:16.taking these then flying home. Team GB taking their bed sheets home. We

:07:17. > :07:21.shall see, we shall see. There we have it. The village in all its

:07:22. > :07:27.glory. And according to the athletes, Team GB are definitely

:07:28. > :07:33.ready for Rio. It is a terrific Olympic Village. A

:07:34. > :07:43.great Olympic Games. Let's go back to our commentary team, Team GB lead

:07:44. > :07:46.thanks to Lily Owsley. Welcome back, third period under

:07:47. > :07:57.way. Laura Unsworth is involved right at

:07:58. > :08:04.the start. Great Britain 1-0 Australia. The goal in the 26 minute

:08:05. > :08:11.from Lily Owsley separates the teams. Anna Flannigan, one of the

:08:12. > :08:20.Australian players unfortunately not selected for the tournament.

:08:21. > :08:34.Aerial ball, trapped and controlled beautifully.

:08:35. > :08:45.Claxton, all the way back. Kenny, sprinting to the right-hand side,

:08:46. > :08:49.picks it up again. Australia biding their time and looking for an

:08:50. > :08:59.opportunity. Intercepted by Great Britain. Snatched back by Australia.

:09:00. > :09:04.Lots of pace here. Great Britain backtracking, and Helen Richardson

:09:05. > :09:07.was getting involved. What Great Britain have done really well this

:09:08. > :09:12.evening is protect the middle of the field. They are more than happy to

:09:13. > :09:17.have the ball out wide. They can use the sideline as another defender.

:09:18. > :09:31.Australia have the pace. Not the cleanest cross. A bit of a let off.

:09:32. > :09:33.Australia, in the corner. Looking for a way out. Heading toward the

:09:34. > :09:48.circle. It is behind. Kate Richardson Walshe involved in

:09:49. > :09:52.dialogue with the umpire about what she can and cannot hear. It has been

:09:53. > :09:57.quiet this evening, the Australian fans are certainly not making much

:09:58. > :10:04.noise. 8000, the capacity in the stadium. Penalty corner, first of

:10:05. > :10:12.the second half. It has gone the way of Australia. It will be the fourth.

:10:13. > :10:17.They have yet to strike with any of their previous three. So a huddle

:10:18. > :10:20.now, with discussions going on as to the best course of action with the

:10:21. > :10:26.first penalty corner of the second half. Great Britain switched off and

:10:27. > :10:40.that allowed Kerstin Dwyer to overlap, so we bray was caught, two

:10:41. > :10:44.versus one. -- so we Sophie Brady. Slattery with the injection, hell.

:10:45. > :10:50.... The short, beautiful goal. But we perfectly. Georgina Morgan, who

:10:51. > :10:59.hit the post in the first half but finds the target early in the

:11:00. > :11:05.second. This could be what puts Australia into the medal chances, so

:11:06. > :11:11.many options from the corners. Cullen, nowhere near that one, she

:11:12. > :11:16.had a long way to go. Georgina Morgan, she had a site in the first

:11:17. > :11:24.half, hit the post, Kenny is not firing, but now they step up. Great

:11:25. > :11:44.Britain 1-1 Australia. Kate Richardson-Walsh. Through the centre

:11:45. > :11:56., Quek, Danson, sizing up options, Australia come forward, Hinch able

:11:57. > :12:02.to boot it away to safety. Not really sure why a corner has been

:12:03. > :12:11.given. But there is no complaint. Maybe it comes off the foot? Must

:12:12. > :12:16.have done. Lots of shrugging shoulders around the commentary

:12:17. > :12:22.position, nobody is quite sure. We may be just could not pick it up on

:12:23. > :12:26.the replay. So another penalty corner for Australia. Last one, just

:12:27. > :12:31.a few moments ago, Morgan hit the target. Great Britain desperate to

:12:32. > :12:43.defend this one. Change your pattern again. Here is the short... Pushed

:12:44. > :12:53.wide. -- as far as Great Britain are concerned the danger is over.

:12:54. > :13:00.Temporarily at least. Great corner defence. They only had Kenny is an

:13:01. > :13:06.option, which made it easier for the defending team to know where the

:13:07. > :13:15.ball was going to go. A bit of pace from Great Britain down the left but

:13:16. > :13:22.it is out of play. Sam Quek comes forward to take it up now. Great

:13:23. > :13:27.Britain 1-1 Australia. Eight minutes of the third period remaining.

:13:28. > :13:32.Australia have stolen it. To the edge of the circle... To horrific

:13:33. > :13:39.defending from the captain. Kate Richardson-Walsh -- terrific

:13:40. > :13:45.defending. A brick wall on the edge of the circle. Transfer a British

:13:46. > :13:50.opportunity now, but it is snuffed out by Australia, TrackBack in the

:13:51. > :13:56.numbers. The difference is that Australia have upped their

:13:57. > :13:59.intensity. But the passing of Great Britain in the first half was

:14:00. > :14:04.brilliant. They knew where it was going to go. But now they are been

:14:05. > :14:13.hurried up a bit by Australia and as a result players are running with

:14:14. > :14:25.the ball a bit more. Cullen. Having to do some more work. Georgie Twigg.

:14:26. > :14:35.Now, on the right, the colour white. Let it go. -- Nicola White. Cullen,

:14:36. > :14:40.getting forward, and Great Britain start again with Kate

:14:41. > :14:46.Richardson-Walsh. Georgie Twigg has space ahead of her. The pass was

:14:47. > :14:54.just in front of Hannah McLeod who did well to keep up the attack. That

:14:55. > :15:00.is a bit of a high ball. Free hit. They have two in the circle. Three

:15:01. > :15:06.now. Shoulder charge. Penalty corner, Great Britain get one at

:15:07. > :15:08.last. To be fair to the umpire it was exactly the same as

:15:09. > :15:30.Richardson-Walsh and Emily Smith. She has exactly made that point.

:15:31. > :15:41.Lily Owsley here comes through and for me that is no different to Kate

:15:42. > :15:47.Richardson Walsh. No reason to change her decision for the penalty

:15:48. > :15:55.corner. Australia have played their ace and lost that gamble. No more

:15:56. > :16:03.video referrals. It is almost a silly referral by Australia. Madonna

:16:04. > :16:18.Blyth has sent it upstairs and it is spot on.

:16:19. > :16:39.Georgie Twigg will inject the ball for Great Britain.

:16:40. > :16:41.Jodie Kenny makes a fantastic save as the post player.

:16:42. > :16:53.Looks as though she stepped in front of Lynch.

:16:54. > :17:18.No penalty corners in the first half, then two, long in quick

:17:19. > :17:25.succession. Georgie Twigg to inject again. Kate Richardson-Walsh poised

:17:26. > :17:39.again. Lots of discussion between players

:17:40. > :18:03.and umpire. Are you asking for a corner? Great

:18:04. > :18:08.Britain heading upstairs. Team video referral for Great Britain. They

:18:09. > :18:16.think they deserve another penalty corner, it is down to the video

:18:17. > :18:22.umpire. It is of an Australian foot. Lauren is saying she feels it is an

:18:23. > :18:33.obstruction. It is an Australian foot, so a penalty corner. OK.

:18:34. > :18:36.Worked out well for Great Britain. Kate Richardson-Walsh did the right

:18:37. > :18:46.thing. The video referral was upheld. They have another penalty

:18:47. > :18:52.corner. Six minutes and 22 seconds of the third period to play. What a

:18:53. > :18:58.lively second half this has been so far. Georgie Twigg takes a position.

:18:59. > :19:04.The Australians gets booted unsuited to try to defend this one. Will it

:19:05. > :19:06.be third time lucky for Great Britain? They need to look for a

:19:07. > :19:15.variation rather than straight off the top.

:19:16. > :19:19.No luck in the three penalty corner attempts for Great Britain. They

:19:20. > :19:34.still have possession. This really is an opportunity for

:19:35. > :19:41.Great Britain to put Australia under pressure. Edwina Bone is sat on the

:19:42. > :19:47.side, it is a long time when you play for an hour. Get key players on

:19:48. > :19:53.the ball and see what you can get. 11 versus ten at the moment.

:19:54. > :19:54.Australia with a chance to put pressure on Great Britain's goal

:19:55. > :20:27.here. A backhand shot finds the goal. No.

:20:28. > :20:31.Fantastic skills. A diving reverse stick shot. She almost gets a double

:20:32. > :20:44.touch, otherwise that would have been goal bound, I think.

:20:45. > :20:48.Ambitious for Kate Richardson-Walsh looking for Alex Danson. But she

:20:49. > :20:53.couldn't deal with the pace of that long pass.

:20:54. > :21:09.Great Britain still have a player over, remember.

:21:10. > :21:12.Quality by Sophie Bray to lift the ball over the Australian defender's

:21:13. > :21:30.stick. Australia won't do any damage but

:21:31. > :21:43.they kept the ball in Britain's half with Bone on the bench.

:21:44. > :21:56.All a bit scrappy in places. Can Unsworth create something here?

:21:57. > :22:08.Oh, backhand goal from Alex Danson, an absolute beauty! Danson does what

:22:09. > :22:12.she does best. I thought she'd missed the opportunity. I think

:22:13. > :22:20.Susannah Townsend does really well. It's a great ball by Laura Unsworth

:22:21. > :22:24.here. I thought Alex Danson was just going to roll her in. Didn't quite

:22:25. > :22:31.get the touch she wanted, but onto that backhand. She doesn't miss

:22:32. > :22:40.anything on that. Absolute bullet. 2-1. Well done, Great Britain, so

:22:41. > :22:51.far. Alex Danson's 90 of the goal her 256th appearance.

:22:52. > :22:59.The problem with the clock, the clock now start to take forward, but

:23:00. > :23:01.it took a few seconds to restart. Just a couple of minutes of the

:23:02. > :23:13.third period to play. It is so important that they hold

:23:14. > :23:18.this leads now into the third quarter time. We'll concentration

:23:19. > :23:35.needed for just over a minute and a half. -- real concentration.

:23:36. > :24:01.Great Britain try to escape from the Australian attack.

:24:02. > :24:05.Into the last 60 seconds of the third period. Great Britain are 2-1

:24:06. > :24:22.up. Losing a few more seconds as

:24:23. > :24:41.Australia attempt one final assault on the Great Britain goal.

:24:42. > :24:47.Surely Great Britain will just do enough to keep this one goal lead

:24:48. > :24:51.heading into the break at the end of the third period. The final 15

:24:52. > :24:57.minutes segment to come. Last ten seconds of the quarter.

:24:58. > :25:02.Great Britain in front, courtesy of a brilliant backhand goal from Alex

:25:03. > :25:13.Danson. 2-1. A big final quarter coming up and

:25:14. > :25:16.map is correct. Fantastic goal from Alex Danson. Back for the final

:25:17. > :25:19.quarter very shortly, but let's bring you right up to date with what

:25:20. > :25:23.has been happening in the weightlifting. Bit of an upset in

:25:24. > :25:27.this, the latest gold medal to be awarded in weightlifting in the

:25:28. > :25:30.women's 48 kilograms. A mammoth final over two hours and multiple

:25:31. > :25:41.lifts. The gold medal goes to Thailand. 92

:25:42. > :26:01.kilograms in the snatch lifted. And then 108 kilograms in the clean

:26:02. > :26:05.and jerk great combine total of 200 kilograms. Fantastic scenes. That is

:26:06. > :26:13.an upset because China have won gold in that event in the last two

:26:14. > :26:21.Olympics. Well done. Paul Drinkhall through to the men's second round in

:26:22. > :26:24.table tennis. He lost the first game but fought back strongly to

:26:25. > :26:30.progress. Well done to Paul Drinkhall. The wonderful thing about

:26:31. > :26:34.being on this remarkable beach is that even at this time, there are

:26:35. > :26:38.people still playing sport out here. There are a bunch of children still

:26:39. > :26:42.playing a little bit of five aside beach football today. Further down

:26:43. > :26:46.Copacabana, you may be able to see the beach volleyball venue. It is

:26:47. > :26:50.lit up at the very end of the beach. If there is a better sporting venue

:26:51. > :26:54.on the planet right now, then I would love to see it. I went there

:26:55. > :26:58.this morning to watch Italy, the first match in the men's volleyball.

:26:59. > :27:03.Italy against Australia. The Italians want oh- zero. This is what

:27:04. > :27:08.is happening right now. You can watch this, it is available on BBC

:27:09. > :27:10.Four and also online. All in taking on Germany. At the Hockey Centre,

:27:11. > :27:26.back for the final quarter. 15 minutes of intense hockey to play

:27:27. > :27:33.in this pool B match between the two great rivals. Great Britain the

:27:34. > :27:43.Olympic bronze medallists in London 2012. Australia three times Olympic

:27:44. > :27:52.champions. 1998... I beg your pardon, 1988, 1996 and 2000. Great

:27:53. > :28:02.Britain 's women have never won Olympic gold. The men did in 1988.

:28:03. > :28:08.Most recently. They took the bronze in London. They showed real form

:28:09. > :28:12.last year at the World Championships again in London, coming back from

:28:13. > :28:18.2-0 down to beat the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shoot out. They

:28:19. > :28:24.are ahead of the mighty Australia here on day one of the Olympic

:28:25. > :28:32.hockey tournament. Courtesy of two rate goals. One from Lily Owsley and

:28:33. > :28:36.the second from Alex Danson. -- two great goals. A deliberate yellow

:28:37. > :28:42.card. Edwina Bone, again! Second yellow. On the bench for the second

:28:43. > :28:48.time. She has had more time sitting down and she has on her feet in this

:28:49. > :28:54.match. Another five-minute sin bin infringement for Edwina Bone. Great

:28:55. > :28:55.Britain will have the advantage of a player over for the next five

:28:56. > :29:11.minutes. When you start to see Australia

:29:12. > :29:15.losing their discipline, it is another little thing that gives you

:29:16. > :29:24.confidence. Great Britain appealing for the penalty corner, the umpire

:29:25. > :29:29.having none of it. It is a tough one for Great Britain now. Australia

:29:30. > :29:32.with Edwina Bone on the sideline, down to ten players again. Do you

:29:33. > :29:36.push for the third goal or do you keep it? Keep the ball around the

:29:37. > :29:42.back? Keep battling to keep players or do you settle for 2-1 and try to

:29:43. > :29:45.shut the game up? Just under 30 minutes of play remaining. The third

:29:46. > :29:54.goal would probably win it for Great Britain. -- 13 minutes. The

:29:55. > :30:02.Australian coach looks a little impatient. He sets high standards

:30:03. > :30:06.for his team. He knows what it is like to play on the international

:30:07. > :30:12.stage. He knows what his women are capable of and they haven't been

:30:13. > :30:15.anywhere near the side of squad that was in the champions Trophy in June.

:30:16. > :30:28.The men's team is the kookaburras. The ladies team trailing Great

:30:29. > :30:43.Britain by 1-2. Great Britain's men did not have a

:30:44. > :30:51.great start to the tournament earlier today, defeated 4-1 by

:30:52. > :30:57.Belgium, on this pitch. It started at 12:30pm in the searing heat, 60

:30:58. > :31:06.degrees pitch side. Still warm now, although much more pleasant.

:31:07. > :31:22.It bounced off the shin of Emily Smith and out of play. Cullen, going

:31:23. > :31:29.over to maybe launch one high. High across the face of goal. That was

:31:30. > :31:38.risky from Cullen, but Great Britain get away with it. What was she

:31:39. > :31:44.thinking? I have no idea. Yes, Sam Quek is in acres of space... Hinch

:31:45. > :31:52.coming off her line is the saving grace. Great Britain on the attack.

:31:53. > :32:09.Danson, could be a great individual goal. Good attack from Britain.

:32:10. > :32:19.Danson and Owsley each looking for the second. The defence get caught

:32:20. > :32:25.in two minds. Lynch makes the save. But in that situation, in training,

:32:26. > :32:32.Lily Owsley would have smashed that into the back of the net. Edwina

:32:33. > :32:35.Bohn still on the bench, and ten minutes to play. Great Britain lead

:32:36. > :33:02.Australia by 2-1. That is certainly more like it.

:33:03. > :33:10.Aerial the ball up the side of the pitch and make Australia work for

:33:11. > :33:25.it. They look from the Australian number 18, Claxton. Robert by

:33:26. > :33:36.Danson. -- robbed. Dwyer, sizing up options. Great Britain making a few

:33:37. > :33:42.too many casual mistakes in this final period, first from Cullen,

:33:43. > :33:50.most notably, almost betting in Australia for a goal. Now they can

:33:51. > :33:53.settle things down with the captain, Kate Richardson-Walsh, pushing

:33:54. > :34:04.forward. An Australian player on the floor. Australian possession. It is

:34:05. > :34:09.so important that Great Britain, when they win the ball, keep

:34:10. > :34:12.possession. They are just giving it back to Australia who are building

:34:13. > :34:17.up pressure. As a result Great Britain are having to drop further

:34:18. > :34:25.and further back. Needs clearance this time... And it is all the way

:34:26. > :34:30.down field. A few more seconds taken from the clock by Great Britain,

:34:31. > :34:39.their lead intact. The sin bin time is almost done for Edwina Bone,

:34:40. > :34:56.Australia will be back to. Shortly. She is back on the field. -- back

:34:57. > :35:03.to. -- rack to full strength shortly.

:35:04. > :35:26.All the way back to Kate Richardson-Walsh. Sam Quek.

:35:27. > :35:31.Unsworth. Owsley, trying to snuff out the Australian defence.

:35:32. > :35:34.Fortunately the whistle had gone, otherwise Claxton would be in

:35:35. > :35:46.trouble. She is getting spoken to anyway. Just stop it, stop it. Stop

:35:47. > :35:57.the play. Stop it, is what she said. And quite right. Claxton tangling

:35:58. > :36:02.with McKellen. It is just so important that Great Britain keep

:36:03. > :36:06.their heads. Play calmly. The court is ticking down. Stick to your game

:36:07. > :36:13.plan, no need to do anything silly or try anything special. Good

:36:14. > :36:18.pick-up from Danson. Still in possession. Across the face. Sadly,

:36:19. > :36:32.a little too deep for Helen Richardson-Walsh.

:36:33. > :36:42.The Australian supporters are trying to raise the morale of their

:36:43. > :36:49.players. Here they come. Six green and gold shirts, deep in the British

:36:50. > :37:02.half. Unsworth, doing the tidying up for Great Britain. Can they turn

:37:03. > :37:14.defence into attack? The umpire has blown. Australia, looking menacing.

:37:15. > :37:20.Great Britain clear their lines. Helen Richardson-Walsh, away. Holds

:37:21. > :37:23.it up. It is all getting a little bit frantic. You can hear the voices

:37:24. > :37:39.of the players. Susanna Townsend. Performing a

:37:40. > :37:45.clever juggling act. It is played forward to Alex Danson. She wriggles

:37:46. > :37:48.her way into space. When she is on the ball there is an air of

:37:49. > :37:57.anticipation that she might produce another little bit of magic to

:37:58. > :38:03.switch the scoreline again. Four minutes to play, Great Britain 2-1

:38:04. > :38:12.Australia. Kate Richardson-Walsh. Alex dance and get the stick on it,

:38:13. > :38:17.can't control it. It is just much better from Great Britain, they have

:38:18. > :38:23.stretched the field, now with three strikers, much higher up the field,

:38:24. > :38:27.putting the Australian defence under pressure. As a result you can turn

:38:28. > :38:31.the ball of a higher up the field, you have less distance, obviously,

:38:32. > :38:39.to run, if you want to try to get the third goal. Australia, coming

:38:40. > :38:50.forward. Once again at their attack is snuffed out. And the minute taken

:38:51. > :39:00.from the clock. Aerial ball, all the way back, taken out of the air, good

:39:01. > :39:08.control by Australia. That is too strong. Out of play. Those are the

:39:09. > :39:13.things I find uncharacteristic from Australia. Simple passes, that

:39:14. > :39:25.should really go stick to stick without any problems at all. Sam

:39:26. > :39:41.Quek, confused as to the whereabouts of the ball... What a save. Maddie

:39:42. > :39:52.Hinch, quickly off her line to deny Pires. As you say, Maddie Hinch has

:39:53. > :40:01.been on fire tonight. No rush. Says Susanna Townsend to Sam Quek, who

:40:02. > :40:05.leaves the ball. It is picked up by Holly were up but Great Britain

:40:06. > :40:10.loose possession again. They have got to keep hold of it, Australia

:40:11. > :40:21.are dangerous in this position... Penalty corner to Australia. One

:40:22. > :40:26.minute 49 seconds on the clock. It is almost bullying tactics from

:40:27. > :40:29.Australia. Thought there may have been a foul on top of the circle and

:40:30. > :40:36.Kate Richardson-Walsh but she did not refer it. Georgina Morgan is on

:40:37. > :40:48.the field for this corner, with Jodie Kenny. Hannah McLeod will be

:40:49. > :40:54.run one for Great Britain. Catherine Slattery, to inject for Australia.

:40:55. > :40:58.Australia, poised, attempting to level the score line. There is the

:40:59. > :41:06.trap, the drag flick... It is behind. Off target that time from

:41:07. > :41:10.Estrella. They were looking for a deflection on the far right-hand

:41:11. > :41:18.side. She has got to get a on that. The amount of times they would have

:41:19. > :41:38.practised that in training. She looked scared, almost.

:41:39. > :41:46.Australia pegged back in their own half. The last 60 seconds of this

:41:47. > :41:53.match. Great turn to - one Australia. Australia, running out of

:41:54. > :42:01.time. Running out of opportunities. Great Britain, all 11 players back,

:42:02. > :42:09.in and around the circle. Appeals for a penalty corner. They fall on

:42:10. > :42:16.deaf ears. Fantastic defence from Cullen, moving at pace, she got her

:42:17. > :42:23.left hand on the floor to block Brooke Pires. That is out of play

:42:24. > :42:29.and it could be the final instalment of this match. The clock reaches the

:42:30. > :42:38.15 second mark. Great Britain are in possession.

:42:39. > :42:49.It is all over bar the screaming. Great Britain get the Olympic hockey

:42:50. > :42:57.tournament off to a dream start. Defeating their old rivals,

:42:58. > :43:06.Australia, 2-1. The goals from Lily Owsley and Alex Danson, final score,

:43:07. > :43:16.Great Britain 2-1 Australia. A tour effect performance --

:43:17. > :43:18.terrific. We turn our attention to swimming, the finals coming up, the

:43:19. > :43:59.end of four years of sacrifice. The Aquatic Centre is located in the

:44:00. > :44:07.southern section of the Olympic Park and it is where our team await,

:44:08. > :44:11.expertly led by Helen Skelton. We are psyched for the action. There

:44:12. > :44:17.has been Samba drums and headdresses. We had to make Mark

:44:18. > :44:30.take off his headdress. I was at salsa lessons next? What

:44:31. > :44:36.are you most excited about, Becky? James Guy, Max Litchfield, Adam

:44:37. > :44:43.Peaty, Ross murder, what is not to be excited about? James Guy, not his

:44:44. > :44:50.best time this morning, but there is no point in writing him off. It was

:44:51. > :44:55.a decent swim. We are critical looking at them in the water, he

:44:56. > :44:59.struggled a bit towards the end, got tired and had to fight and did not

:45:00. > :45:04.look like he had much left, but it was a heat. He has had rest and

:45:05. > :45:09.recovery time, and I know it is a silly thing to say, but some people

:45:10. > :45:13.do swim better in the afternoon, or when they have raced already. We saw

:45:14. > :45:18.it lest you at the World Championships. He did exactly the

:45:19. > :45:22.same thing last year the World Championships. In the evening he

:45:23. > :45:25.took a silver medal, only dropping two seconds. I really hope it is

:45:26. > :45:32.what he is doing tonight, to get that silver medal. We love repeating

:45:33. > :45:37.things. If you does that night, fair play. He looked like he was trying

:45:38. > :45:38.hard this morning. I hope it was just tactics, blowing the cobwebs

:45:39. > :45:49.off. Hannah Miley and Aimee Willmott also

:45:50. > :45:52.booked their places in the finals of the individual medley. Let's talk to

:45:53. > :45:56.Sharron Davies. She's down there. She's the first person who says them

:45:57. > :46:00.come out of the pool. What did you make of the swims? Gower welcome to

:46:01. > :46:05.my lovely spot, what a fantastic view. I see you over my shoulder.

:46:06. > :46:16.Hannah looked really good, two seconds off her PB. Hannah was six

:46:17. > :46:20.in the Olympics in 2008 and fifth in London. I hope she want before, I

:46:21. > :46:28.hope she gets a medal, she deserves it. The silver and bronze medals are

:46:29. > :46:39.up for any of the ladies. The world record was very nearly broken this

:46:40. > :46:48.morning. How impressed were you by Adam Peaty this morning? Ross had a

:46:49. > :46:51.great swim, going in ninth. Adam had a point to prove and we were all

:46:52. > :46:55.kind of talking about it as the heats were going on and we were not

:46:56. > :47:00.worried for Adam at all. That is just what Adam does. Years so

:47:01. > :47:04.confidence, swum a great race and looked so strong all the way

:47:05. > :47:10.through. Little cheer behind because we saw Max Blix field flying the

:47:11. > :47:17.flag -- Max Litchfield flying the flag for Sheffield. .

:47:18. > :47:23.Really looking forward to this first final. There is Jay Litherland,

:47:24. > :47:26.fourth fastest for this final. He will be in line six for the USA.

:47:27. > :47:47.Then the two Japanese. I think this chap has a cracking

:47:48. > :47:48.chance of a gold medal. The second Japanese but the fastest this year.

:47:49. > :48:06.Four minutes 80. Saito is the guy that delivers. He

:48:07. > :48:14.has been strong all year, but the 22-year-old claiming it -- coming

:48:15. > :48:18.out. Very interesting that the two Japanese and two Americans, three,

:48:19. > :48:23.four, five, six. They will have been setting in the ready room for this

:48:24. > :48:32.big moment. -- sitting in the ready room. We should certainly talk

:48:33. > :48:38.quickly about Max Litchfield. What a brilliant swim. Lifetime best to

:48:39. > :48:43.qualify for this final. He was fifth and now fifth into the Olympic

:48:44. > :48:49.final. Great Britain had a superb first morning. Almost perfect. This

:48:50. > :49:05.is the first final of the men's 400 medley.

:49:06. > :49:32.Medals? Japan or America? Seto delivers. Short long discourse that

:49:33. > :49:40.a course. Seto is capable. Strong fly swimmer, Hosszu, he will be out

:49:41. > :49:48.quick. There is Max Litchfield. -- Seto will be out quick.

:49:49. > :49:58.The fastest eight men in the world, the Olympic final, the first final

:49:59. > :50:09.here in Rio. Max Litchfield will be one lane from the top in lane two.

:50:10. > :50:19.Two lengths butterfly, two breaststroke, two backstroke and

:50:20. > :50:30.then two freestyle. The two Japanese are going very well

:50:31. > :50:37.indeed. Fraser-Holmes in the yellow cap going with them. He is often a

:50:38. > :50:48.good swimmer in the season, but can't deliver in a major meet. Seto

:50:49. > :50:53.is expected and he looks towards Hagino to try to beat him. He was

:50:54. > :51:07.his hero growing up. Seto is the man who can cope with the big pressure.

:51:08. > :51:10.Chase Kalisz did well to qualify. Hagino is the backstroke, second to

:51:11. > :51:16.turn. The Japanese looking very strong. Fraser-Holmes of Australia

:51:17. > :51:22.on the left-hand side of the shot, Commonwealth record holder. He

:51:23. > :51:27.started well, as well. Great Britain's Max Litchfield is in Lane

:51:28. > :51:37.macro two is going well. Maybe fourth or fifth position, but very

:51:38. > :51:44.tight third to sixth. Hagino taking a strong lead. Both Japanese using

:51:45. > :51:52.almost all of the 15 metres they are allowed.

:51:53. > :52:00.I would imagine the breaststroke has been worked on. If Hagino can hold

:52:01. > :52:07.the lead through the breaststroke leg, he will be strong. Kayla is a

:52:08. > :52:22.fantastic breaststroke. Hagino verse for Japan, Seto second

:52:23. > :52:30.for Japan. The charge now coming from Chase K list from the USA. A

:52:31. > :52:40.great leg so far, getting into medal contention.

:52:41. > :52:49.Three swimmers and separated by three seconds at the turn, now 1.5

:52:50. > :52:53.seconds separates all three of them. Seto has caught Hagino. It will all

:52:54. > :52:57.be down to the freestyle leg. As Hagino got enough of a lead? I

:52:58. > :53:04.wouldn't be surprised if this is that even with 100 metres to go.

:53:05. > :53:13.Hagino still leading for Japan, but Chase K list, my goodness me. --

:53:14. > :53:19.Chase Kalisz. I wonder if this one metre, 1.5 metre lead will be

:53:20. > :53:32.enough. Not .7 -- zero .74 of a second.

:53:33. > :53:38.Kalisz trains with Bob Beamon, Michael Phelps' coach, taking a year

:53:39. > :53:43.out of university thought will return to Georgia but has been

:53:44. > :53:50.training with Phelps and Bowman. Hagino is holding on. But Kalisz is

:53:51. > :53:55.coming back. Just inside the last 15 metres into the wall, Kalisz really

:53:56. > :53:59.made a move. Hagino is watching him, breathing to his right. Kalisz also

:54:00. > :54:04.breathing to the right of this will go right down to the last 15 metres.

:54:05. > :54:10.Goodness me, Hagino Japan looks like he will win the first final office

:54:11. > :54:19.2016 Olympic Games in Japan and it will be gold to Japan.

:54:20. > :54:33.Gold and bronze to the Japanese and Max Litchfield fourth. Brilliant

:54:34. > :54:36.swim for Great Britain. Wow. Just outside Dan Wallace's British

:54:37. > :54:41.record. Litchfield having a fantastic swim. The best time for

:54:42. > :54:45.him. You can't ask for more. Fourth place, you will be disappointed, but

:54:46. > :54:50.the three men in the centre were really pushing and driving this

:54:51. > :54:55.race. Hagino pretty much lead from the start. Seto add that all some

:54:56. > :55:00.fly and Hagino took it over on the backstroke and didn't look back. He

:55:01. > :55:07.had to hold off a very fast finishing Kalisz of the USA. Kalisz

:55:08. > :55:11.has knocked his best time down by 2.5, three seconds, just to try to

:55:12. > :55:17.get the gold medal, but just pipped. There is the first gold medal to

:55:18. > :55:20.Japan, to a man who broke his elbow at the World Championships on the

:55:21. > :55:25.training camp before last year's World Championships, and could not

:55:26. > :55:33.swim. What a fantastic start to the Olympic Games in the swimming pool.

:55:34. > :55:36.Hagino wins the gold. Japan gets two medals. The bronze to Seto. Max

:55:37. > :55:47.Litchfield, brilliant fourth place. The first gold medal in the pool at

:55:48. > :55:50.the 2016 Olympics goes to Japan. Congratulations. It was a real

:55:51. > :55:56.battle in the middle back, wasn't it? Such a close race, but I'm so

:55:57. > :55:58.pleased for Max Litchfield. Getting fourth in the first Olympic Games,

:55:59. > :56:06.that was his first global final ever. And he has come here, done two

:56:07. > :56:11.personal-best times and improved. He is only 21, he has such a bright

:56:12. > :56:13.future. Where you guys worried that he did a PB this morning, faster

:56:14. > :56:18.than ever before, were you worried he would not be able to back it up?

:56:19. > :56:23.Ultimately, he had to do the best time to get the final, so to make

:56:24. > :56:26.the final was his Olympic gold medal, let's say. Getting there and

:56:27. > :56:34.seeing what happened. To come out for, between Kalisz, Hagino, Seto,

:56:35. > :56:42.it would be those for the podium, but he was the best of the rest.

:56:43. > :56:47.Danny Wallace's record is 4:11.0. You will take a lot of confidence

:56:48. > :56:50.from it. Not just Max Litchfield, but his younger brother Joe was a

:56:51. > :56:54.European champion earlier this year. A lot of early mornings in the

:56:55. > :56:59.household. Let's look at to the women's 100 metres butterfly. Sharon

:57:00. > :57:05.is going to try to grab Macs, but we will keep an eye out for when that

:57:06. > :57:13.happens. Defending Olympic champion, world holder. Is anyone going to get

:57:14. > :57:19.it? She was European champion at 14 years of age and she was unbeatable.

:57:20. > :57:25.Came to the Olympic Games, came forth, and did not perform well. She

:57:26. > :57:29.has broken the world record by nearly half a second. If she is on

:57:30. > :57:37.form, I would say she will win, but she could before -- pushed. Medals

:57:38. > :57:44.are not decided this evening, but shrub stump could win it. We have

:57:45. > :57:48.seen things happen at Olympic Games. Would it be fair to say she is a

:57:49. > :57:53.victim of her own success quest might let's hear from Max

:57:54. > :58:00.Litchfield. Max, quite today. You must be pleased. Yes, very happy.

:58:01. > :58:08.Shame to come in fourth and just miss out, but two PB is in a day,

:58:09. > :58:16.can't complain. This is your first world final. Frustrating not to get

:58:17. > :58:19.a medal but fantastic swims. Places to work on? There is always things

:58:20. > :58:30.you can go back and work on after you have erased. There is a few

:58:31. > :58:35.things where I can do better. There is definitely things to prove and I

:58:36. > :58:40.go back next year and put those things in place and do better.

:58:41. > :58:47.Hopefully we will have a good GB night. Well done. Cheers. Huge

:58:48. > :58:51.congratulations to Max Litchfield. Not a bad day at the office for him.

:58:52. > :58:59.First Olympics, first final to come away from, congratulations. Store

:59:00. > :59:01.that name in your memory banks. Time for the women's 100 metres butterfly

:59:02. > :59:07.demi- finals. You join us when they are just

:59:08. > :59:25.introducing. Two massive roistering that

:59:26. > :59:28.interview with Max Litchfield. A truly brilliant swim. I can't

:59:29. > :59:33.believe he thought he would come here and come forth. A great

:59:34. > :59:37.achievement. The guys who were going under 4.10, I'm not sure where you

:59:38. > :59:41.could do much about that -- he could do much. He should be proud of what

:59:42. > :59:45.he has achieved. Sometimes you look at for and say, I could have got

:59:46. > :59:51.third, but I'm not sure he could have. That is a great result to be

:59:52. > :59:54.effectively the best European. It would have won the European

:59:55. > :00:09.Championships by a street, what he just did. Fantastic sprint

:00:10. > :00:10.butterfly, Kelsi Worrell of the USA. The defending Olympic champion goes

:00:11. > :00:15.in fourth. just tactics, blowing the cobwebs

:00:16. > :00:27.off. Here is the defending Olympic

:00:28. > :00:32.champion. Took time out to have a baby. And look at where she is. The

:00:33. > :00:43.fastest qualifier for the semifinal, she looks in super shape. Great form

:00:44. > :00:47.after two years out. 2014, 2015, both seasons, did not swim, but is

:00:48. > :00:52.now back and getting better with each swim. She first took part in

:00:53. > :01:01.the American trials at the age of 12, Sydney 2000, a tough competitor,

:01:02. > :01:05.very dangerous, I believe. The wheels came off a little bit in her

:01:06. > :01:12.heat this morning but still swam very well, defeated Kelsie Worrell,

:01:13. > :01:18.who is in lane five, the winner of the US trials. This is not an easy

:01:19. > :01:26.thing to do, get yourself ready, then the starter pulls you back. He

:01:27. > :01:33.is asking the crowd to can't download it. It is exciting. Asking

:01:34. > :01:44.import duties, asking the crowd to be absolutely quiet. -- is asking in

:01:45. > :02:09.Portuguese. That was close but you are allowed

:02:10. > :02:17.to do that much, the 20 age old, Ottesen, a great first 50, just as

:02:18. > :02:21.Andy mentioned this morning. You talk about the wheels coming off, it

:02:22. > :02:30.can get very heavy in the shoulders and arms in the last 15 minutes. She

:02:31. > :02:35.is 16 hundredths of a second faster than this morning. She really

:02:36. > :02:44.attacked at this morning, coming back is Kelsie Worrell, also going

:02:45. > :02:58.well is the 16-year-old Japanese Xinyi, in six -- Ikee. She has just

:02:59. > :03:11.watched team-mate and will now win the semifinal, but that is not that

:03:12. > :03:19.quick, you know, and fourth, dangerous. Ikee, not even in the

:03:20. > :03:26.shot here, the 16-year-old Japanese. I am sure that she was inspired by

:03:27. > :03:32.the men in that first race. The 16-year-old, just a little touch,

:03:33. > :03:50.just enough. Super short, all the heads were down, -- super shot.

:03:51. > :03:57.Ikee, of Japan, wins it, Vollmer, second, a very dangerous third and

:03:58. > :04:03.fourth, but not particularly quick. We have been joined by Justin Rose.

:04:04. > :04:11.You are here for the golf. Well, not here, for the golf, obviously! This

:04:12. > :04:18.is your first swimming gala, what do you make of it so far? It is my

:04:19. > :04:26.first Olympic experience. It is amazing. The energy... I have been

:04:27. > :04:29.driving past the Olympic village all week, now it is great to experience

:04:30. > :04:35.it. Following you on Twitter you seem to be having a great time.

:04:36. > :04:41.There are some obvious notable absences in the golf team, what made

:04:42. > :04:48.you want to go? Since it was announced three or four years ago I

:04:49. > :04:57.have been excited. My wife is a gymnast, so she is really up for it,

:04:58. > :05:01.but I just truly believe it can help grow and showcase the game. It is

:05:02. > :05:08.the pinnacle of most sports, so why not for golf? Is your wife here, to

:05:09. > :05:15.watch the gymnastics? She gets here on Monday. It must be a different

:05:16. > :05:18.experience being in a team environment, when usually travel the

:05:19. > :05:23.world on your own. That is why I wanted to get here for the opening

:05:24. > :05:27.ceremony, and go out with Team GB, to feel like you're something much

:05:28. > :05:37.bigger than your own sport. Did you enjoy it? It was amazing. 105,000

:05:38. > :05:40.people, everyone so happy, so many different cultures and nationalities

:05:41. > :05:45.but everybody connected by sport and getting along so good. Do you hope

:05:46. > :05:52.that this evening you will learn something from watching swimmers in

:05:53. > :06:02.the pool? They say if you can just click the water it is like a bunker

:06:03. > :06:05.shot! I have so much respect for these guys. I took my first couple

:06:06. > :06:15.of swimming lessons this year, it is so hard. Why did you not call us? I

:06:16. > :06:23.am nowhere near that level! Then you would need to give mark a golf

:06:24. > :06:30.lesson. He needs golf lessons far less than I need swimming lessons!

:06:31. > :06:37.Back to the commentary team for the second semifinal.

:06:38. > :06:51.A fascinating chat. Straight into the second semifinal. The

:06:52. > :07:08.16-year-old from Canada, a huge talent. Oleksiak, huge talent,

:07:09. > :07:16.improving all the time, and from Sweden, the world and European

:07:17. > :07:22.champion Sarah Sjostrom, but she has not yet won an Olympic medal. She

:07:23. > :07:27.looked a bit ropey this morning. Just warming up, Rusty, throwing of

:07:28. > :07:33.cobwebs. I thought she looked nervous. In the training session she

:07:34. > :07:39.just looked every bit... I don't know. Scared is a bit strong. But

:07:40. > :07:50.she is the world champion and world record-holder and is going in four,

:07:51. > :07:59.Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden. The first semifinal was not to kill it quick.

:08:00. > :08:07.-- not particularly. The world champion and world record holder,

:08:08. > :08:17.Sjostrom, decent start, and also a good start for Lu China, medallist

:08:18. > :08:26.four years ago. Four years of training, now is the time to

:08:27. > :08:32.deliver. The Australian, McKeon, from a very strong swimming family.

:08:33. > :08:38.Her father, mother and uncle, all swam for Australia. She is going

:08:39. > :08:46.very well, a great swim for her. With 25 to go now, Sjostrom, just

:08:47. > :08:50.beginning to turn on the burners, and this looks good. Look at the

:08:51. > :08:58.world record line. It is hers, and she is just two tenths of a second

:08:59. > :09:07.outside of it. She just looked like she turned on the gas with 25 to go.

:09:08. > :09:16.And much more relaxed now. A very deceptive swimmer from Sjostrom,

:09:17. > :09:25.world-class racing there. Started slowly, building into it. McKeon

:09:26. > :09:32.took the first 50 metres. Then Sjostrom winding up with ten, 15

:09:33. > :09:41.metres to go. By this time she is three quarters body length ahead of

:09:42. > :09:45.the rest of the field. Sorry, McKeon, three quarters body length

:09:46. > :09:53.ahead, and that was reversed within 20 metres. She just decided it was

:09:54. > :09:57.time to go, and she went. That will do her confidence a lot of good,

:09:58. > :10:08.going into the final is the fastest swimmer. It should calm the nerves a

:10:09. > :10:14.bit. The first semifinal was not that fast. A look at the times.

:10:15. > :10:22.Second semifinal, the world champion Sarah Sjostrom, and I can tell you

:10:23. > :10:31.that the first five have made it. Which means that Kelsie Worrell of

:10:32. > :10:38.the USA is not in the final. So the finalists...

:10:39. > :10:46.A whole second ahead, Sjostrom, and the real news, Kelsie Worrell of the

:10:47. > :10:57.USA, not in the final. Justin Rose, when you walk around

:10:58. > :11:02.the village, having been there a couple of days, you are a sportsman

:11:03. > :11:09.at a certain level, what is it like to see other people you get

:11:10. > :11:12.starstruck by? Yeah, of course, what is impressive is walking around the

:11:13. > :11:17.village and trying to guess what other people do. Looking at body

:11:18. > :11:21.shapes and body types. You think, that is a sprinter, a gymnast... You

:11:22. > :11:28.just admire all the different types of athletes in the village. What do

:11:29. > :11:32.you make of the golf course? I will see it tomorrow for the first time.

:11:33. > :11:36.My caddie really likes it. They have built it from scratch so you never

:11:37. > :11:43.know what you're going to get but everybody is excited and positive

:11:44. > :12:00.about it. You love a golf course. You have a permanent golf time. --

:12:01. > :12:06.golf tan. Same here. Let's turn our attention to James

:12:07. > :12:12.Guy. 400 metres freestyle final. We spoke about him not being the

:12:13. > :12:16.happiest bunny this morning. But how confident are you of him doing

:12:17. > :12:20.something in the final? He did a similar time last year in

:12:21. > :12:26.the World Championships, so hopefully tonight he will drop those

:12:27. > :12:30.two seconds again like you did, a personal best, because that would

:12:31. > :12:34.set him up for the 200 metres freestyle, argued league is better

:12:35. > :12:38.event. That is tomorrow, so it will be good for him just to get in the

:12:39. > :12:43.water and hopefully get a medal. We need to talk about the reigning

:12:44. > :12:48.Olympic champion, he has had a chequered few years, it is fair to

:12:49. > :12:52.say, he's served a drugs ban that was not actually announced until he

:12:53. > :12:58.served it, then spent a week in jail for drink-driving following a car

:12:59. > :13:01.crash in 2013. But he has dominated this event at the last two World

:13:02. > :13:08.Championships and is the reigning world champion. Plenty going on,

:13:09. > :13:16.allegedly, out with the pool, to talk about, when it comes to Sun

:13:17. > :13:19.Yang. Will that mean anything to James Guy?

:13:20. > :13:23.I don't think he will even though, you don't go all those kind of

:13:24. > :13:29.things, you just concentrate on the race. -- you don't Google -- I can

:13:30. > :13:47.think you will even know. My goodness me, with his big coat

:13:48. > :13:50.on, he will be warm. David McKeown of Australia goes in lane two. Then

:13:51. > :13:57.the really big guys in the centre. This will be hard to call. This may

:13:58. > :14:07.be one of the closest 400 metres freestyle is in history. If Sun Yang

:14:08. > :14:12.has not got the afterburners on, and he is now, if not, it would be a

:14:13. > :14:18.close finish. I am disappointed he is here, personally. He has been

:14:19. > :14:22.taking medication for his heart problem, then all of suddenly no

:14:23. > :14:28.longer has a heart problem, and he is still here. But he is racing, and

:14:29. > :14:38.he will be a real threat. The European champion, the third fastest

:14:39. > :14:45.qualifier for this final, Gabrielle Detti in three. James Guy did not

:14:46. > :14:54.swim particularly well in the heats, but he did enough to get into the

:14:55. > :15:02.final. On the other side of Sun Yang, Mack Horton, fastest in the

:15:03. > :15:14.world this year. Three. 41. If you does that, definite medal.

:15:15. > :15:18.Mack Horton has to get it out here. He is younger, maybe years

:15:19. > :15:32.intimidated by Sun Yang, we don't know. Splashing him. It has all been

:15:33. > :15:37.blown way out of proportion, but I have to say, the answer from Mack

:15:38. > :15:41.Horton was, I don't talk about drug cheats, which is a strong statement

:15:42. > :15:52.to make before the finals. Conor Dwyer the fastest qualifier from the

:15:53. > :15:59.USA is in four. He has been in this position with three of his mates

:16:00. > :16:05.with him in the relay previously. The final of the men's 400 metres

:16:06. > :16:06.freestyle. James Guy in the red hat, one from the bottom. Sixth fastest

:16:07. > :16:24.qualifier. Right next to Sun Yang. Sun Yang had a very slow reaction to

:16:25. > :16:28.the gun. Good start from James Guy and Conor Dwyer. The tactics in this

:16:29. > :16:33.race will be fascinating and very interestingly Sun Yang started

:16:34. > :16:38.pretty slowly will stop he must have heard my disapproval. But he's in

:16:39. > :16:51.it. James Guy doing really well. Really impressive. David McCullough

:16:52. > :17:02.going out first will stop -- David McKeon going in first. David McKeon

:17:03. > :17:07.and Connor Jaeger in lane one, strong. Nobody really showing their

:17:08. > :17:16.cards just yet, but James Guy is taking the lead now. He is working

:17:17. > :17:23.pretty hard done that first hundred. I think he's working particularly

:17:24. > :17:28.hard also in lane four, Conor Dwyer. James Guy trying to break it early.

:17:29. > :17:34.Mack Horton, the yellow Hat in the centre, looks very, very comfortable

:17:35. > :17:41.indeed. This is a clear break very, very early from James Guy. This is

:17:42. > :17:45.very brave indeed. He has great 200 freestyle strength, he is world

:17:46. > :17:48.champion in that. In that 4x200 relay last year at the World

:17:49. > :17:53.Championship is where Great Britain one, it was down to him overtaking

:17:54. > :18:00.the Americans and pulling the race back. He has guts, taking this race

:18:01. > :18:06.by the scruff of the neck. Only the last 200 will see if he has enough

:18:07. > :18:10.in him ahead of world-record pace. Halfway turn and James Guy of Great

:18:11. > :18:14.Britain leading by nearly one second. He has worked very hard down

:18:15. > :18:20.this first 200 metres and is now the charge will come. Mack Horton

:18:21. > :18:23.looking very comfortable in the yellow hat and he is starting to

:18:24. > :18:28.make the move. This is where he delivered in the heats. That pink

:18:29. > :18:34.suit one lane from James Guy, goodness me. They are charging. This

:18:35. > :18:39.is. James Guy trying to hold off the field. He still has 150 metres to

:18:40. > :18:43.go. This will be tough if he has heavy arms at this point. As you

:18:44. > :18:57.mentioned, Mack Horton looking over the yellow cap, a man capable of

:18:58. > :19:00.3.50 one. Sorry, 3.40 one. Sun Yang winding up. The middle lanes are

:19:01. > :19:07.winding up, reeling him in. Let's hope James Guy has something left.

:19:08. > :19:12.It was nine tenths at 200 it is too tense at 300. They are starting to

:19:13. > :19:19.go. Mack Horton has gone to his feet. Sun Yang has maxed him --

:19:20. > :19:23.matched him every single length. This last 50 will be absolutely

:19:24. > :19:38.special. Conor Dwyer has a fantastic finish, as well. James Guy still

:19:39. > :19:40.there. Connor Jaeger of America. The 20-year-old Australian is being

:19:41. > :19:47.urged on to beat Sun Yang. Sun Yang trains in Australia still,

:19:48. > :19:50.amazingly. Go on, Mack Horton. Sun Yang closes to us in the pink suit.

:19:51. > :19:54.Mack Horton, the 20-year-old Australian in the yellow hat, Mack

:19:55. > :20:03.Horton still has it undertakes the goal. The world is a happier place

:20:04. > :20:09.for that result. Mack Horton gets the gold, Sun Yang the silver, the

:20:10. > :20:16.bronze to Gabriele Detti of Italy and James Guy finishing in sixth.

:20:17. > :20:22.Not a bad time, 3:44.6. Goodness me, he has done over the far side of the

:20:23. > :20:27.lane and he has one goal for Australia in the 400 free. A

:20:28. > :20:35.brilliant swim, absolutely outstanding. Mack Horton staying in

:20:36. > :20:41.the middle, let's James Guy do all the work, it has to be said. And

:20:42. > :20:48.then just wait, make a move and just hold off Sun Yang. Brilliant.

:20:49. > :20:56.What about James Guy for the 200? Great strength in the first four

:20:57. > :20:59.lengths. I've got to say, the guts of James Guy, I think it was the

:21:00. > :21:04.only thing he could have done. We had to go for it. The others were

:21:05. > :21:16.enormously quick. I don't think he is a 3.41 freestyle at all. Massive

:21:17. > :21:22.look over from Mack Horton. Well done, sir. Olympic champion 400

:21:23. > :21:27.metres freestyle. He's moved through the ranks over the years, 2013 five

:21:28. > :21:34.gold medals at the world Junior Championships. He was clearly on

:21:35. > :21:37.form. This guy has been swinging well. Through to last year, when he

:21:38. > :21:39.had a bug at the World Championships and couldn't pull it off. He has

:21:40. > :21:56.come back now for the gold medal. Well, it was a brave swim, wasn't

:21:57. > :22:00.it, by James Guy? He was out there for so long and you kept saying, I'm

:22:01. > :22:07.nervous, I'm nervous. Imagine how his parents feel. What do you make

:22:08. > :22:12.of James' swim? He was great to 200. I was really excited about his 200.

:22:13. > :22:17.It was very, very brave of him. For me, not the right tactics at Olympic

:22:18. > :22:21.Games. He should have spoken about that with his coach. You know how

:22:22. > :22:26.these boys swim and he kind of took it on and did take a risk, but now

:22:27. > :22:31.is not really the time to take a risk at an Olympic Games, in my

:22:32. > :22:34.eyes! He was great to 200. 200 his his main event and I'm really

:22:35. > :22:39.excited for tomorrow and I hope he doesn't let that affect into most,

:22:40. > :22:42.he is not too disappointed. The Europeans, there was a lot of talk

:22:43. > :22:46.about how he didn't get his game plan early in the competition, but

:22:47. > :22:49.it didn't affect him. Has he got the mental strength? Definitely. We

:22:50. > :22:54.haven't spoken to his coat, they might be focusing on the 200 free,

:22:55. > :22:59.the 200 relay and the 200 butterfly, I don't know. The time we have from

:23:00. > :23:03.the trials, one second faster, that was slightly disappointing. It will

:23:04. > :23:08.take a lot of confidence. It did look smooth in the beginning, but

:23:09. > :23:16.the wrong tactics. First Olympic final. Not a bad day, week, and it

:23:17. > :23:21.is still early. Let's hear from Sharron. He worked hard, that was

:23:22. > :23:25.the only way you could do it. That is my plan, no pressure, go out fast

:23:26. > :23:29.and try to hold on. It is a very painful way to do it. Do you ever

:23:30. > :23:34.regret when you finish that that is your plan? You busy the last 100,

:23:35. > :23:38.when they were going past me, oh, no. It is a great venue and happy to

:23:39. > :23:51.be year and trying to fight for the medals. I so your mother earlier,

:23:52. > :23:54.she had has hands over her face. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for

:23:55. > :23:59.my coaches and all my friends, so thank you very much and Mike grandad

:24:00. > :24:08.up in heaven. Talk to us by Ju Reti. You sprint was there. The first 200

:24:09. > :24:14.was pretty comfortable, really. You need to rest those legs, see you

:24:15. > :24:17.tomorrow. Thank you. We'll see James Guy tomorrow in the heats of the 200

:24:18. > :24:22.meter freestyle. He mentioned his family there because we talk a lot

:24:23. > :24:25.about how families support. His family uprooted and moved down south

:24:26. > :24:29.because he wasn't quite settling at boarding school. It was a heck of a

:24:30. > :24:32.commitment for the whole family. It is a real team effort and you

:24:33. > :24:37.sometimes forget other people's sacrifices. Parents getting up at

:24:38. > :24:43.5:30am and driving you to school when you attend the 13 years of age.

:24:44. > :24:46.I don't know when you started early mornings, but it was young. Everyone

:24:47. > :24:53.has to make commitments and these guys moving house and his dad moving

:24:54. > :24:56.jobs, it is a wonderful story. He seems slightly disappointed. There

:24:57. > :25:04.is another race and he will pick himself up quickly. The only way he

:25:05. > :25:09.will get a medal is to stay with Sun Yang abstract to do something at the

:25:10. > :25:12.end. Bronze is up for grabs. Congratulations to Mack Horton and

:25:13. > :25:19.let's not forget he is a lucky boy. There was a massive car crash.

:25:20. > :25:28.World champion in this race, the 400 metres individual medley. And now

:25:29. > :25:38.Seto Japan has to be satisfied with bronze. It was a very fast race,

:25:39. > :25:43.4:09.7. Bronze it was. Slightly slower. 1.3 seconds slower than the

:25:44. > :25:50.heats. I wonder if he went to quit this morning. He went out quickly on

:25:51. > :26:04.his first 100 metres butterfly. I think he blew a lot of his energy

:26:05. > :26:12.there. These two men, 4.06 for both. 1.2 second best for Chase for the

:26:13. > :26:19.USA. The history of the great Michael Phelps, they have really

:26:20. > :26:25.owned this event. I wonder if this guy is the future. He is just 22

:26:26. > :26:33.years of age. A fantastic last 200 metres. His breast drug leg was

:26:34. > :26:50.absolutely extraordinary. He took 1.5 seconds off second place.

:26:51. > :27:00.Good enough for gold in Rio in the men's 400 meter individual medley.

:27:01. > :27:07.Bronze in London in 2012, four years later, Olympic champion for Hagino

:27:08. > :27:24.of Japan. What a meet Japan have had already. First race, gold and

:27:25. > :27:28.bronze. Hagino and Seto. Almost the perfect start for Japan, couldn't

:27:29. > :27:34.have asked for too much more. Gold and silver would have been slightly

:27:35. > :27:36.better, but goodness me, Hagino Olympic champion in the men's 400

:27:37. > :29:02.metres individual medley. From the land of the rising Sun, two

:29:03. > :29:10.new favourite sons in the swimming pool. The bronze medal goes to Seto

:29:11. > :29:17.and the gold goes to Hagino. Olympic champion men's 400 medley.

:29:18. > :29:25.Two medals for Japan in the men's 400 metres individual medley.

:29:26. > :29:30.Congratulations to Hagino, the new Olympic champion. Is he the next

:29:31. > :29:34.Michael Phelps? In 2013, in Barcelona, they had a cardboard

:29:35. > :29:37.cutout of him and it had all these events on it. I think he was doing

:29:38. > :29:41.seven events or something and I think they thought he was going to

:29:42. > :29:49.do a Michael Phelps. Unfortunately, I think it flopped after day two. He

:29:50. > :29:54.is now doing... Japan had a great run. You Lowe a great start for

:29:55. > :29:58.them. Tokyo in four years, I expect them back on the podium them. I

:29:59. > :30:03.can't wait for a Brazilian swimmer in the pool. These guys go crackers.

:30:04. > :30:09.We are surrounded by Japanese bands and they are very proud and rightly

:30:10. > :30:17.so. Look at the photographers. That is unbelievable.

:30:18. > :30:23.Hagino is a great swimmer. He has done it now. And Tokyo in four

:30:24. > :30:29.years' time, he could be like Michael Phelps. Hagino was the first

:30:30. > :30:34.young man to hear his national anthem playing out this evening in

:30:35. > :30:40.the Aquatic Centre in Brazil. The medals are lovely. You like a bit of

:30:41. > :30:50.jewellery. Looking at them, they are just amazing. Normally you get a

:30:51. > :30:55.little teddy, don't you? It is a monkey, isn't it? It looks a bit

:30:56. > :31:03.like a Pokemon. It was probably just a Pokemon! I don't understand that

:31:04. > :31:07.game. We found a Pokemon! So, the first national anthem we heard

:31:08. > :31:16.tonight was the Japanese one, will we hear our national anthem playing

:31:17. > :31:21.this evening? You never know. Hannah Smiley is one lady we are very proud

:31:22. > :31:25.of. COMMENTATOR: Hannah Smiley winning gold at the European

:31:26. > :31:30.Championships. It is silver, well done, Hannah. World Championship

:31:31. > :31:36.Silver Medal. Hannah Miley winning gold for Scotland, what a start to

:31:37. > :31:40.the Commonwealth Games. I would love to say that we have done it because

:31:41. > :31:45.it is every athlete's dream to come away with a medal, but the journey

:31:46. > :31:48.we've had so far and who I have become has changed my perspective.

:31:49. > :31:54.Yes, winning a medal would be amazing but that isn't it. It sounds

:31:55. > :31:58.so final, if you get a medal, it is like finishing a computer game, now

:31:59. > :32:04.what? For me, the journey doesn't stop there, you keep going. I would

:32:05. > :32:08.love the medal, I wouldn't be training without wanting to get on

:32:09. > :32:14.the podium but I don't see it as the final achievement, there's so much

:32:15. > :32:18.more to achieve. She is such an endearing young women, for so many

:32:19. > :32:23.reasons. Very grounded and down-to-earth. With spoken about the

:32:24. > :32:31.unique way she trains with her family in the small swimming pool.

:32:32. > :32:34.She said to Sharron that her opponent was out in front of

:32:35. > :32:39.everyone, but Hannah said that she has to back it up tonight so you

:32:40. > :32:43.don't know what could happen. Some might say it's naive but that's the

:32:44. > :32:47.right attitude to have. Yes, Hannah is one of those athletes, the

:32:48. > :32:54.butterflies aren't really here for her. She is coming to her third

:32:55. > :33:00.Olympics. It disappears a bit. The great thing she does, the hard work,

:33:01. > :33:04.preparation, going up and down, following the line and she does its

:33:05. > :33:09.well, which is why she is successful, she puts in the hours.

:33:10. > :33:14.Her family are oriented around her and her Olympic success. No one

:33:15. > :33:18.deserves the medal more than her. She talked about the fact that she

:33:19. > :33:22.has gone to the village but she isn't worried about taking pictures

:33:23. > :33:33.of Phelps, the way that James Guy is. The first Olympics, you are, you

:33:34. > :33:42.won two medals, but your first Olympics, you are excited, you go to

:33:43. > :33:46.the village, I saw Muhammad Ali and it was mind blowing, the things that

:33:47. > :33:50.you see. She's done it, she's been there, I'm not saying that she took

:33:51. > :33:58.a lot of pictures but she's very confident now. I think it is going

:33:59. > :34:03.to be a race for second and third because Hosszu has gone. If she

:34:04. > :34:08.swims her best time, she will win a medal. Let's talk to Sharron Davies

:34:09. > :34:12.because you've talked to her, you've seen her winning medals on the big

:34:13. > :34:17.stages, but what would the Olympic medal mean to her? Absolutely, this

:34:18. > :34:22.is my event and Hannah is closed by her dad and I was closed by my dad,

:34:23. > :34:28.lot of similarities. She will want this more than anything, the Olympic

:34:29. > :34:31.medals are the ones that count. Sometimes she can overanalyse

:34:32. > :34:35.things, if there is one thing I would say it would be relax and

:34:36. > :34:41.enjoy it. Be prepared, she doesn't have the best action, she has to

:34:42. > :34:47.claw it back. She is normally very good on the freestyle. Don't go into

:34:48. > :34:51.panic mode too much. I think the Japanese are having a blinder. Four

:34:52. > :34:59.years before Tokyo, working in their programme of investing in sport.

:35:00. > :35:05.Don't count out. Hannah Miley is in the final of this one and she isn't

:35:06. > :35:05.the only Brit, so is Aimee Willmott, second-generation Olympian in her

:35:06. > :35:20.family. COMMENTATOR: We saw another Japanese

:35:21. > :35:28.swimmer. The men got gold and bronze in the individual medley.

:35:29. > :35:39.Aimee Willmott swimming at the London Olympic Aquatic Centre. What

:35:40. > :35:42.a great opportunity for her. The fifth fastest qualifier for this

:35:43. > :35:49.final, fantastic place to be, really. I can't think of better

:35:50. > :35:54.places for these two Brits to be qualifying than fourth and fifth.

:35:55. > :35:58.The Commonwealth champion and British record-holder, Hannah Miley.

:35:59. > :36:04.The pressure is off a little bit? I think the pressure is off. Becky has

:36:05. > :36:09.mentioned, sorry, Sharron called it right, Miley doesn't have to

:36:10. > :36:13.pressure. On her best time she is capable of silver or bronze. Drado

:36:14. > :36:21.will be one of the women trying to stop her. -- Dirado. Hannah isn't

:36:22. > :36:32.going to be up there, the first free, Dirado, Hosszu and Belmonte,

:36:33. > :36:36.who is very strong. Belmonte is the second fastest qualifier, but

:36:37. > :36:43.goodness me, what an amazing swim it was from Hosszu, the second fastest

:36:44. > :36:49.in history, nearly breaking the world record. Just missed it by 15

:36:50. > :36:59.one hundredths of a second, she turned with 100 metres to go three

:37:00. > :37:06.seconds beneath the pace. During the last 100 metres freestyle under one

:37:07. > :37:13.minute, very unusual. The same as Ryan Lochte doing it in the men's

:37:14. > :37:19.400 medley. 15 seconds slower than the time she did four years ago. We

:37:20. > :37:29.might see the record going this evening. Four seconds up when she

:37:30. > :37:46.turns? Maybe two, give herself a bit extra. Clever, clever.

:37:47. > :37:57.Katinka Hosszu, for hungry, in four and Great Britain have them

:37:58. > :38:01.surrounded, Hannah Miley and Aimee Willmott. Very fast, straight out of

:38:02. > :38:07.the traps, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. I believe Hosszu will try

:38:08. > :38:11.to get more the lead before she turns to freestyle. What was

:38:12. > :38:14.interesting last year in the World Championships, Hosszu did the same

:38:15. > :38:21.thing, going for the world record, not just the, double and Dirado was

:38:22. > :38:25.next to her and she was reeling it back in, she went one at a half, two

:38:26. > :38:28.seconds faster on the freestyle and was reeling her back in but couldn't

:38:29. > :38:35.quite get there and got the Silver Medal. The gold and silver

:38:36. > :38:42.medallists are here. Belmonte, they Spanish -- the Spanish, coached by

:38:43. > :38:50.someone who coached in Scotland. The first 100 metres. It is as expected.

:38:51. > :38:55.Working pretty hard, Hosszu. Quite surprised, she is a good fly swimmer

:38:56. > :38:59.but Belmonte is a World Championship silver medallist on the 200 fly, and

:39:00. > :39:05.she has beaten her by about two metres. Backstroke for Hosszu, very

:39:06. > :39:10.quick indeed, European champion on the 100 metres backstroke two years

:39:11. > :39:15.ago, Gold medallist at the European Championships in the 200 and looking

:39:16. > :39:19.very strong on the 150 metre Turner, way ahead of the world record, the

:39:20. > :39:27.computer-generated world record line. 2.5 after three lengths. She

:39:28. > :39:33.also had a strong breaststroke and it has improved. Stretching over the

:39:34. > :39:37.last couple of years. I think she's looking to get four seconds ahead on

:39:38. > :39:44.the freestyle, the record. Dirado, also in the backstroke here. The

:39:45. > :39:50.black cap is just ahead. Very similar to the World Championships

:39:51. > :39:55.in Klizan last year. No doubt about the leader here, Hosszu is going for

:39:56. > :40:00.the world record. So, the halfway stage at the final of the women's

:40:01. > :40:03.400 metres individual medley and Katinka Hosszu, 3.3 seconds

:40:04. > :40:09.underneath the world record pace at halfway. Now she really has to judge

:40:10. > :40:14.the breaststroke and see if she can get to be four seconds under because

:40:15. > :40:21.the last 100 metres, can come back very quickly as in London. Great

:40:22. > :40:24.Britain's Aimee Willmott is going very well in two and Hannah Miley is

:40:25. > :40:31.moving into the bronze medal position. Fly and the bag, their

:40:32. > :40:40.weaker strokes. Hannah is looking good -- the back. Hannah Miley is in

:40:41. > :40:44.third, Aimee Willmott in fifth, both going well. I think the bronze medal

:40:45. > :40:49.in this for the British women is rarely up for grabs, Belmonte isn't

:40:50. > :40:54.swimming as well as she can do. Hosszu is well ahead of the world

:40:55. > :41:01.record, Dirado is with her. Hannah Miley has half a body length on the

:41:02. > :41:07.bronze medal over Belmonte. I think she can get the bronze. Tell you

:41:08. > :41:13.what, Dirado herself is slowing up a little bit, Miley is putting herself

:41:14. > :41:16.in great contention. Katinka Hosszu, 5.25 seconds under the world record

:41:17. > :41:21.pace and she hasn't some legs here as well. Sheila tired at the end of

:41:22. > :41:25.the breaststroke but goodness me, she's going for it -- she looked

:41:26. > :41:32.tired. Surely she can't fail to break the world record with 100 to

:41:33. > :41:36.go? She lost it only just in the heats this morning. I don't believe

:41:37. > :41:40.that the line is going to catch up, I think she will break the record.

:41:41. > :41:47.Stunning swimming. Hannah Miley is still in bronze medal. Fantastic,

:41:48. > :41:52.but tell you what, Belmonte isn't giving up easily. Belmonte is in

:41:53. > :41:55.fourth position and she is a brilliant distance freestyle and she

:41:56. > :42:01.is challenging Hannah Miley but no doubt about the winner, it is

:42:02. > :42:10.whether it is a new world record. The world record, 4:28.4 three. She

:42:11. > :42:16.is way under it. But look at the battle for bronze. It is a world

:42:17. > :42:21.record for Hosszu it is silver for Dirado, oh, and the bronze has just

:42:22. > :42:25.gone to Belmonte on the touch. Goodness me, so close for Hannah

:42:26. > :42:31.Miley, she has got fourth. Very brave summing from her. A massive

:42:32. > :42:39.world record for Katinka Hosszu of Hungary. 4.2 six. Oh, my word. That

:42:40. > :42:44.is awesome swimming, Hosszu completely dominated the race and

:42:45. > :42:48.she has smashed the world record, set in London in 2012 that we

:42:49. > :42:52.thought wouldn't go for a long time. She's been building up to it.

:42:53. > :43:00.Working with her husband who is a coach. Over in the States. And this

:43:01. > :43:04.I believe will be the start of a number of medals for her at these

:43:05. > :43:12.Games. Get one, you get the confidence. She was dominant from

:43:13. > :43:19.the very go. I think she recognised she didn't have enough of a lead.

:43:20. > :43:25.Her husband, Shane. He's known for his extravagant behaviour on

:43:26. > :43:30.poolside. He's kicked things before. It's good to see him more excited

:43:31. > :43:37.about his swimmer and his wife's performance. That was quite special,

:43:38. > :43:47.two seconds under the world record. Utterly extraordinary. It's actually

:43:48. > :43:59.2.1. She was 5.2 ahead after the breaststroke. Wow. He's a one, I can

:44:00. > :44:05.tell you. I'm not sure I'd like to see him unhappy! The results

:44:06. > :44:11.confirmed. Katinka Hosszu, massive new world record. She takes the

:44:12. > :44:19.gold. Silver, great silver, Dirado of the USA and bronze, Belmonte from

:44:20. > :44:21.Spain, meaning that Great Britain's Hannah Miley just gets moved out

:44:22. > :44:35.into fourth place. Katinka Hosszu, the new Olympic

:44:36. > :44:39.champion. She destroyed the world record in two seconds. What

:44:40. > :44:44.everybody suspected would happen. She blew away the field. Way out in

:44:45. > :44:53.front from the early stages. But, come on, lay your cards on the

:44:54. > :44:59.table, your heart is broken. You are raging. I am so angry, Hannah, what

:45:00. > :45:09.we're doing the last 50 metres. She did not look at Belmonte once. If

:45:10. > :45:16.she just breathed and thought, she is right there. Are you not

:45:17. > :45:21.thinking, head down, get this done. That was her opportunity and I am

:45:22. > :45:26.devastated. She deserves it so much. All she had to do was breathe once

:45:27. > :45:34.and look at her. She was looking at Almonte all the way. -- Belmonte.

:45:35. > :45:44.But I hear what you say, looking to the side may have made a difference.

:45:45. > :45:49.That was a risk. We thought this was going to be the chance. Hannah Miley

:45:50. > :45:55.had got the Olympic medal she deserved. Let's hear from her now,

:45:56. > :46:00.Hannah, we love you! I don't know what to say. Right, we

:46:01. > :46:07.are all together. Tough, that was tough. Becky is going mental,

:46:08. > :46:11.saying, why did you not look at her? You saw her. I can see her, every

:46:12. > :46:16.time I had my head down. I could see she was coming back at me and I had

:46:17. > :46:22.nothing left. I gave it everything I had. It is a mixture of emotions

:46:23. > :46:26.because I am happy I went last in the heats, so much better than

:46:27. > :46:32.London. But it was so close. I was so close to getting it. It is kind

:46:33. > :46:41.of happy and disappointment coming together. This is what you get. Yes.

:46:42. > :46:47.Don't worry. This is sport. You have a big smile. The pair of you at one

:46:48. > :46:52.stage were almost in third and fourth and we thought he would fight

:46:53. > :46:55.for medals. Good swimming today. I am happy with that. I would have

:46:56. > :47:00.liked to come back and got faster but I have to give it a lot of

:47:01. > :47:11.effort this morning to secure a place and so did hammer. At the time

:47:12. > :47:15.we had to do that. -- Hannah. It is my first Olympic final and I am

:47:16. > :47:21.happy with that. It is such a tough event. The work you do is huge. And

:47:22. > :47:28.three Olympic Games, that is extraordinaire. I am getting on a

:47:29. > :47:37.bit. I enjoyed this season this year so much. I kind of reinvented

:47:38. > :47:43.myself. I am always serious with my training. I don't do my sport

:47:44. > :47:48.because I have to, I do it because I want to do it and enjoy being in

:47:49. > :47:57.there. I have become more independent and taken ownership of

:47:58. > :48:05.what I do. Since April, my coach, to coach me properly, to do all of that

:48:06. > :48:11.and have such a short space of time. I did spot him in the crowd. It set

:48:12. > :48:15.me off as well, because it has been an incredible journey. Hopefully

:48:16. > :48:22.when I write this book one day, it is... You have something to look

:48:23. > :48:27.forward to. 200. It is kind of nice to know the main one is on day one

:48:28. > :48:34.and is on the way, so that you can enjoy the rest of the time. It is

:48:35. > :48:38.tough on day one. You are unsure and sometimes it is a good thing because

:48:39. > :48:47.you hit the ground running and go with it, you just run with it.

:48:48. > :48:53.Congratulations. Hannah Miley, agonisingly close to an Olympic

:48:54. > :48:59.medal. Just missing out. She might not leave here with a new piece of

:49:00. > :49:04.jewellery but she has won herself an army of fans. A fantastic swim and

:49:05. > :49:09.you cannot take away what she has done in this swimming pool. Coming

:49:10. > :49:12.up, Adam Peaty and Ross Murdoch in the semifinal of the 100 metres

:49:13. > :49:21.breaststroke. Jason. Well said, Helen. Hard lines

:49:22. > :49:25.to Hannah Miley, so close. Let's bring you up-to-date with what has

:49:26. > :49:31.happened in the hockey. Mixed fortunes for the teams as the men

:49:32. > :49:38.were beaten 4-1 by Belgian, but the winning, they won a bronze medal at

:49:39. > :49:45.London 2012 and put in a terrific performance this evening against old

:49:46. > :49:50.rivals Australia. Lily Owsley with the opening goal. She plays hockey

:49:51. > :49:56.for Birmingham University. And take a look at this. A fantastic

:49:57. > :49:58.performance from Team GB with brilliant finishing.

:49:59. > :50:07.Both goal-scorers spoke after the match. The two goal-scorers for

:50:08. > :50:11.Great Britain alongside me. A wonderful performance. Go into that.

:50:12. > :50:17.This is such a big match against great opponents. A fantastic team

:50:18. > :50:24.performance with a strict game plan we were able to stick to. Fantastic

:50:25. > :50:28.to have a great team performance today. A lot of pressure early but

:50:29. > :50:34.you got through that and got the goal. I was nervous at the start,

:50:35. > :50:39.first game in the Olympics. I came on with shaking hands. But you

:50:40. > :50:44.realise it is another game. We knew we would come out like that and we

:50:45. > :50:49.matched it and went one up and were in control. Watching in London four

:50:50. > :50:53.years ago and scoring in the opening match. If someone tell me at the

:50:54. > :50:58.Olympics in London that I would be playing in four years, I would say,

:50:59. > :51:02.what are you talking about? I have worked hard to get here and scoring

:51:03. > :51:09.in the opening game is great. I think we are both glad we did. You

:51:10. > :51:14.are an old hand. Scoring in big matches. Playing at the Olympics is

:51:15. > :51:17.special. We happened to be the players at the end of the gold

:51:18. > :51:27.today. It is very much about the team. We had a solid team

:51:28. > :51:31.performance. A word on team spirit. I saw you guys and you looked focus

:51:32. > :51:37.and positive but there is bouncing your step. This team is about

:51:38. > :51:42.spirit. It is about the culture we have. Those of us who train

:51:43. > :51:45.full-time at Bisham Abbey. That is what you will see throughout these

:51:46. > :51:51.games, we are tight and together and we are here to do business. All that

:51:52. > :51:57.experience and youth, with the baby of the team, 21 years old. Like I

:51:58. > :52:01.said, we are such a tight group. We have been through bad times and

:52:02. > :52:07.great times and it has come together at the right time. I am the baby but

:52:08. > :52:11.I have experienced heads around the and they get the younger ones

:52:12. > :52:21.through the games. Well done. Well done. Attention

:52:22. > :52:28.turns to their next match on Monday. What a terrific start beating

:52:29. > :52:34.Australia. We can bring you tennis news. If Venus Williams is to win a

:52:35. > :52:39.gold medal at the Olympics, becoming the first female tennis player to

:52:40. > :52:44.become the person to win at a fourth Olympic Games, it will not be in the

:52:45. > :52:53.singles. Kirsten Flipkens collapsing in celebration as Venus Williams

:52:54. > :53:01.hammers a long forehand on match point. Venous will be back in the

:53:02. > :53:08.Games, in the women's doubles. Let's go back to Helen. We are

:53:09. > :53:15.turning our attention to Adam Peaty. We have seen Mack Horton become

:53:16. > :53:20.Olympic champion in the 400 metres leaves to -- freestyle. Not too long

:53:21. > :53:24.ago he was in a serious car accident, saying he drove it off the

:53:25. > :53:33.cliff. You were looking at a picture on Twitter of him as a young boy

:53:34. > :53:38.looking at his heroes. He is like 11. It is so sweet. You can be

:53:39. > :53:46.inspired by someone and that can drive you on to get as Olympic

:53:47. > :53:57.medal. The fact that we love Mack Horton because he beat Sun Yang. We

:53:58. > :54:04.rather he ends up on the top of the podium. There has been controversy

:54:05. > :54:10.around Sun Yang. Talking about what may or may not have happened in the

:54:11. > :54:14.warm up swimming pool. It doesn't matter because Mack Horton is going

:54:15. > :54:19.home with a medal. One person who is on course to be Britain's first

:54:20. > :54:23.Olympic male champion since 1988 is Adam Peaty and we will see him in

:54:24. > :54:29.the semifinals of the breaststroke. Ross Murdoch goes in the first. We

:54:30. > :54:35.can talk to Adrian Moorhouse, our last champion, and Andy. What is so

:54:36. > :54:44.funny about that? Do not look sceptical. What did you make of the

:54:45. > :54:48.heats? It was a long time ago. It was a fantastic swim. I have been

:54:49. > :54:54.looking forward to it all year myself and to be able to commentate

:54:55. > :54:59.on it and see him dominate the heat, it is tremendous. So far ahead of

:55:00. > :55:03.the rest of the field. He has outlined what he is about. He can

:55:04. > :55:09.handle the pressure. I expect him to do it tonight. People will say there

:55:10. > :55:20.is no chance he has peaked too soon, but can he go faster? There is chat

:55:21. > :55:23.about how good he looked in that. His best second 50, everything went

:55:24. > :55:29.well. There is chatter about him going under 57. I do not know

:55:30. > :55:32.whether it will be this time or soon but he has taken breaststroke to a

:55:33. > :55:36.different level and the rest will have to play catch up. Incredible

:55:37. > :55:41.what he is doing in the swimming pool but out of it, after breaking

:55:42. > :55:45.the world record, he seemed relaxed and confident. He was talking down

:55:46. > :55:51.the line to journalists is about 40 minutes. Seeming so relaxed. Talk

:55:52. > :55:57.about inspiring youngsters, how impressive is that. It was

:55:58. > :56:02.enormously professional. He has talked about getting faster through

:56:03. > :56:07.the rounds. On the heats, a massive world record. He does not do small

:56:08. > :56:12.world records. Half a second, the second time he broke it, but he

:56:13. > :56:16.wants to get faster and faster, into the semifinals and a gain into the

:56:17. > :56:22.final faster. You will doubt him, the way he was looking this morning?

:56:23. > :56:28.I would say get in your seats, but you will probably be jumping around

:56:29. > :56:35.for this one. You have to do that, you have to tell them off like kids.

:56:36. > :56:39.But understandably and justifiably excited about what might happen in

:56:40. > :56:43.the swimming pool tonight for Adam Peaty, but tomorrow night. Not

:56:44. > :56:48.forgetting Ross Murdoch. Hopefully he can make the final. Getting the

:56:49. > :56:52.bronze medal at the World Championships for him. With Ross in

:56:53. > :56:56.the first semifinal, it is harder because you do not know how fast

:56:57. > :57:01.they will go in the second. It must be nice for Adam Peaty I can get a

:57:02. > :57:05.second slower and make it through in first position. Other people, you

:57:06. > :57:11.could say the expectation, he is a marked man, world champion, will

:57:12. > :57:16.European champion, world record holder, but it does not look like

:57:17. > :57:20.the pressure is getting to him. He is one of these confident people and

:57:21. > :57:26.almost naively confident, which is a beautiful thing. Two length of the

:57:27. > :57:31.pool, he is like that. He is right. He happens to be the best at that

:57:32. > :57:35.and do not overthink it and go through the motions of his race and

:57:36. > :57:39.that is what he does well, he is not thinking about anybody else. If he

:57:40. > :57:43.looks after himself, he wins the gold medal. When you think of his

:57:44. > :57:49.achievements, it would be easy to forget this is his first Olympic

:57:50. > :57:54.Games. If he actually wins a medal, which hopefully he well, it

:57:55. > :57:59.literally means he has the full sets and he has done it the right way. I

:58:00. > :58:04.did it the backwards way. That experience, he has banked it. He

:58:05. > :58:11.races as if he has been racing 20 years. He is very mature. All the

:58:12. > :58:17.big competitions, you react within two seconds of the race. What should

:58:18. > :58:25.viewers look out for? Watch out for Ross will stop me has to be the top

:58:26. > :58:30.three, four. For Adam, if he gets the start right and comes up with

:58:31. > :58:36.people he will swim away and try the world record again. You can hear the

:58:37. > :58:54.Brazilians are in the house. A drink. The crowd going mad further

:58:55. > :59:01.swimmer. Good to see the Australians putting breast swimmers together

:59:02. > :59:05.again. They have had some good swimmers in the past. This is the

:59:06. > :59:12.only person I can see threatening Adam Peaty. I don't think anybody

:59:13. > :59:17.will threaten him, actually. I will tell you who is doing well, team

:59:18. > :59:29.Japan. Bronze medal at the 400 medley. Extremely good swims.

:59:30. > :59:40.Koseki, just dipped under 59 seconds. Only two swimmers went

:59:41. > :59:46.under 59 seconds in the heats. He went 58.9 one. Adam Peaty, 57.5

:59:47. > :59:53.five. So far ahead. This is all about Ross Murdoch in lane two.

:59:54. > :59:59.Whistle before the interview, his friends and family at the pub in

:00:00. > :00:04.sterling. Give him a cheer because he's going to need it in Lane two.

:00:05. > :00:09.Doing his best to make it through to the final. Was in the junior team

:00:10. > :00:16.with Adam Peaty, they were swimmers together in the European junior

:00:17. > :00:21.team. The crowd are really getting into this. Not sure how many major

:00:22. > :00:28.internationals have been held in Brazil. They were cheering

:00:29. > :00:33.enormously loudly for Joao Gomes, the fourth fastest qualifier for

:00:34. > :00:40.this semifinal. He is in six. Ross Murdoch will be in two towards the

:00:41. > :00:45.top. Good reaction from Ross Murdoch, the fastest in the field,

:00:46. > :00:51.0.61 seconds. Not bad under water from him. Great reaction but not

:00:52. > :00:58.first to the surface, suggesting he can do something with his fly kick.

:00:59. > :01:04.Behold field -- the whole field is in a line. Koseki in four for Japan.

:01:05. > :01:12.Murdoch in two, two from the top. Koseki is leading the field out.

:01:13. > :01:17.Murdoch in second place, 0.19 down. A big turn and Murdoch has to work

:01:18. > :01:23.hard. We thought he was more of a 200 metre breaststroke, getting a

:01:24. > :01:26.bronze medal at the World Championships on the hundred.

:01:27. > :01:32.Charging on the last 25 and he needs to now because he's in fifth, sixth

:01:33. > :01:36.place. Koseki in the black cat of Japan and also Joao Gomes of Brazil.

:01:37. > :01:43.This is going to be very close -- black cap. First, Koseki of Japan.

:01:44. > :01:49.Second, Cordes of the USA and Joao Gomes in third. Oh, dear, Ross

:01:50. > :01:58.Murdoch in sick place, oh, dear. That won't get through to the final.

:01:59. > :02:04.-- sixth place. Koseki of Japan doing exactly what he did in the

:02:05. > :02:08.heats. Just edging it, look at that, he is off centre. Sometimes when

:02:09. > :02:13.they dive in with one foot behind the other, track style, they call

:02:14. > :02:20.it, it throws you off centre. He needs to work on that, but a good

:02:21. > :02:24.victory. Gomez, two Gomes, the 30-year-old, pleasing the crowd, I

:02:25. > :02:33.think he'll make the final. He must be in the top eight. Gomes, you can

:02:34. > :02:37.see, two from the top, doing a sneaky stroke. You don't want to be

:02:38. > :02:43.doing that. At 30 years of age you should have worked that out. The

:02:44. > :02:50.first semifinal, Koseki wins it, Cordes in second and I imagine they

:02:51. > :02:56.will go through comfortably. Domes, the huge crowd favourite, from

:02:57. > :03:03.Brazil, and Ross Murdoch in sixth place, disappointing for him,

:03:04. > :03:06.really. Ross Murdoch, third in the World Championships last year in

:03:07. > :03:10.this event, and in the semifinals, what did you make? It wasn't good.

:03:11. > :03:19.His diet was decent, the first hundred was quickly, second at the

:03:20. > :03:22.turn -- his dive. He was grabbing and snatching, you talk about people

:03:23. > :03:31.snatching the water, you don't catch it. He is a 200 swimmer and he just

:03:32. > :03:35.revved it. He will be disappointed, unlikely to make the final, so he'll

:03:36. > :03:38.be disappointed because he isn't doing the 200 metres breaststroke

:03:39. > :03:45.here, which is arguably his better event. He'll be disappointed. Let's

:03:46. > :03:48.speak to him with Sharron. Ross, Mark was talking about snatching and

:03:49. > :03:53.grabbing the water and to me that looks like what you were doing? It

:03:54. > :03:58.was pretty rough, to be honest. I need to go back and see what went

:03:59. > :04:03.wrong. I felt everything was going right going into this. That won't be

:04:04. > :04:07.good enough for the final. Breaststroke is a funny stroke, you

:04:08. > :04:17.can't overdrive. It's one of those ones where you can slip the water a

:04:18. > :04:21.little bit -- over try. INAUDIBLE Not good enough, really. Back to the

:04:22. > :04:24.drawing board, I'm sure is not the last we've heard from you but it

:04:25. > :04:29.didn't work today. Definitely, I'll see you later. I love his attitude,

:04:30. > :04:35.shrugging his shoulders and moving on. Not the last we'll see of him.

:04:36. > :04:43.The second semifinal, the big guns are out in this one. COMMENTATOR: We

:04:44. > :04:49.are the big guns? Absolutely, we are ready. Van Der Burgh, the previous

:04:50. > :04:53.champion from London 2012. Towards the end of his career I think, Andy.

:04:54. > :05:00.He'll be correct but I'm not sure if he can catch Peaty. Well, he's very

:05:01. > :05:07.fast -- he'll be quick. Cody Miller, the third fastest qualifier for this

:05:08. > :05:13.second semifinal. Extraordinary swimming from Adam Peaty. Next to

:05:14. > :05:19.him is going to be Felipe silver of Brazil. He's just seen his

:05:20. > :05:24.compatriot doing very well -- Silva. It would be great for the race

:05:25. > :05:28.tomorrow night and Peaty if we could have two Brazilians in it. But there

:05:29. > :05:35.is the new massive world record-holder. 57.55, where did that

:05:36. > :05:41.come from? It came from the 26.69, his first 50 was outstanding.

:05:42. > :05:47.They've been working on his dive and they pulled it off to perfection.

:05:48. > :05:53.Only two men have broken 27 in the 50 metre breaststroke. Only two men

:05:54. > :06:01.have ever done that and he did it halfway through. Just extraordinary.

:06:02. > :06:09.The power. Talking of power, look at that, Silva in five. He is a

:06:10. > :06:14.powerful guy, champion in the 50 breaststroke in 2014. Silva, very

:06:15. > :06:18.powerful. Peaty, I wonder if he's going for the world record again.

:06:19. > :06:23.Talking about getting faster through the rounds from the heats through to

:06:24. > :06:34.the semis and finals. It could happen. We'll see. His coach has

:06:35. > :06:36.done a wonderful job with him. Adam Peaty, the world record-holder, in

:06:37. > :06:51.fourth. Very good reaction to the gun. Not a

:06:52. > :06:55.bad under water. Adam Peaty of Great Britain, well, this is exactly where

:06:56. > :06:59.he started, he got up to about 20 metres and he really rocketed and he

:07:00. > :07:04.looks good already, Adrian. Going with him, Cameron Van Der Burgh.

:07:05. > :07:12.Your reactions, very few swimmers will go under 0.6. Peaty, stretching

:07:13. > :07:16.away, he's a world-class sprinter, Van Der Burgh. He must have looked

:07:17. > :07:22.over and realised it is all over for him. Only 200s of a second slower

:07:23. > :07:28.than this morning. He's on the same kind of pace. Cody Miller is having

:07:29. > :07:33.a great race just above him and Van Der Burgh is tailing off, Peaty is

:07:34. > :07:37.swimming well. His world record, 57.55 that he said this morning,

:07:38. > :07:40.let's see if he can go faster into the semis and set it up for

:07:41. > :07:50.tomorrow's final. Perfect from Peaty. Goodness me, the time is 57.6

:07:51. > :07:58.two. Pedestrian, 71 hundredths love and the world record that he set,

:07:59. > :08:05.the second fastest time in history -- seven one hundredths of a second.

:08:06. > :08:09.He has worked quite hard for that one. I think he would have been

:08:10. > :08:14.looking for the world record. Really interesting, it was mentioned in the

:08:15. > :08:19.interview with Ross Murdoch about how breaststroke is a funny stroke.

:08:20. > :08:23.You can't snatch the water, you get so excited, you want to get hold of

:08:24. > :08:30.the water and sometimes you rush it a little bit. I think maybe he was a

:08:31. > :08:34.little bit overconfident. He isn't arrogant. His confidence in his

:08:35. > :08:40.stroke and his ability to race victory. Seven one hundredths

:08:41. > :08:50.outside of the world record. But he was slower than this morning, make!

:08:51. > :08:56.But very good. -- mate. Massive world record in the heats this

:08:57. > :09:03.morning and another 57, four Adam Peaty, brilliantly winning the

:09:04. > :09:11.second semifinal. Cameron Van Der Burgh, the lipid champion still, in

:09:12. > :09:14.third. -- Olympic champion. STUDIO: Earlier we heard Adam saying to

:09:15. > :09:21.Sharron that he can't get carried away, it isn't done until he has the

:09:22. > :09:28.medal in the bag but we can do it -- we can get excited now, can't we? I

:09:29. > :09:32.didn't think he would go much faster tonight, from the whole day, doing a

:09:33. > :09:36.lot of media, breaking the world record, he has a lot going through

:09:37. > :09:41.his mind. He'll want to get back to the village and rest before the

:09:42. > :09:45.final. We are going to talk about at a lot over the next two days but

:09:46. > :09:48.let's give Ross his credit, not his favourite swim but over the last

:09:49. > :09:52.couple of years he has done phenomenal things and he has a big

:09:53. > :10:02.future. In the Common Wealth Games he pulled one out of the bag and he

:10:03. > :10:07.just missed the record. He has a longer stroke and he was grabbing

:10:08. > :10:13.too much of the water. He'll be disappointed because getting bronze

:10:14. > :10:20.at the world Championships, so this will be disappointing for him. I

:10:21. > :10:27.think we would love to do the 200 breaststroke. He came third in the

:10:28. > :10:33.trials and didn't qualify. Ross, the 200 European breaststroke champion.

:10:34. > :10:36.Not doing it at the Olympics. He didn't qualify in the trials,

:10:37. > :10:41.interesting to see what happens with that. Something he can learn from

:10:42. > :10:44.and he seemed to have the right attitude, shrugging his shoulders

:10:45. > :10:51.and moving on. I wonder how long Adam Peaty is going to spend in the

:10:52. > :10:59.media line. Not breaking the record, so not so long! I think he is

:11:00. > :11:07.positioned 20. Adrian and Andy, what did you make of that, he is blowing

:11:08. > :11:11.away the field isn't he? Little bit critical because he didn't break the

:11:12. > :11:14.world record but he is seeking perfection, he wants to swim the

:11:15. > :11:20.perfect race every time. He will look at the areas where he didn't go

:11:21. > :11:27.as quickly as the world record. Gold medal, still up for grabs. 57.62,

:11:28. > :11:33.dodgy swimming! The second fastest in history. It is pretty good, you

:11:34. > :11:37.know I'm impressed, I'm a huge fan and I wish he breaks the world

:11:38. > :11:41.record and gets the gold medal tomorrow, fantastic. You are a harsh

:11:42. > :11:48.critic, Adrian Moorhouse. Don't forget we can see you! Talk us

:11:49. > :11:53.through the next one because we have the women's 4x100 metre relay. The

:11:54. > :12:04.Australians did well this morning, didn't they? They were phenomenal.

:12:05. > :12:08.The Canadians are surprising, they have 216-year-olds in their team and

:12:09. > :12:20.they will be going third and fourth in the final leg. It's going to be a

:12:21. > :12:32.fascinating race. Can you see past the Australians? Four of the top

:12:33. > :12:40.ten. I think that with the Campbell sisters... I can't see beyond them.

:12:41. > :12:49.They are phenomenal freestyle swimmers and I think they'll be

:12:50. > :12:54.shooting for the world record. The world record was set in Glasgow at

:12:55. > :13:03.the Commonwealth Games. In a way I'd be quite happy if they didn't quite

:13:04. > :13:08.break it! It would be nice to give Glasgow as the world record venue,

:13:09. > :13:16.but I think it's going to be a bitter rated. McKeon leading off

:13:17. > :13:25.team Australia. -- is going to be of little rated -- going to be

:13:26. > :13:42.destroyed. Cate Campbell, the world record holder.

:13:43. > :13:58.Australia in four and the USA are in five. Great start in lane five. Not

:13:59. > :14:03.swimming in the heats this morning so they have rested her. Going

:14:04. > :14:12.quickly for team USA. They are going to need the lead. Campbell's world

:14:13. > :14:19.record. It will be quite intimidating on the back end. Manuel

:14:20. > :14:30.in the league. McKeon has already swam this evening.

:14:31. > :14:42.This is good swimming from Simone Manuel. Will it be here for the

:14:43. > :14:49.states. Just outside the American record and a superb take over. The

:14:50. > :14:55.USA are leading. Not too surprising. Britney Elm Street for Australia.

:14:56. > :15:05.Canada are in third place and they have their 216-year-olds, and going

:15:06. > :15:11.very well for Sweden, still strong. -- still strong.

:15:12. > :15:23.Sarah Strauss on the second leg. I noticed that. Looking a bit rough

:15:24. > :15:27.around the edges -- Sarah Sjostrom. The Americans not letting the

:15:28. > :15:30.Australians have their own way. They need a lead before the Campbell

:15:31. > :15:38.sisters get in. They have a good one. A good takeover. Team USA, a

:15:39. > :15:49.fantastic leg. Maybe half a second, the lead. 100th outside the

:15:50. > :15:57.world-record, from Australia. Bronte Campbell, the slower of the two

:15:58. > :16:08.Campbell sisters, but she has caught up the half second. Abby, really

:16:09. > :16:16.good second leg. The Campbell sisters taking it on for Australia.

:16:17. > :16:27.Katie Ledecky getting in. The last leg for the Americans. Both swimmers

:16:28. > :16:34.on world record. Australia, one, Australia, two. A great swim for the

:16:35. > :16:42.Canadians. With two 16-year-olds, can they get a medal? Charging up in

:16:43. > :16:48.two, the reigning Olympic champion on the individual 100 metres

:16:49. > :16:53.freestyle. Can she catch up the Canadian? It is fascinating. The

:16:54. > :17:01.16-year-old, we have already seen tonight, trying to hold off. But the

:17:02. > :17:09.Australians dominating. Cate Campbell opening up the lead, one

:17:10. > :17:18.body length. Cate Campbell is flying down this last 100 metres. Three .30

:17:19. > :17:26..98, the world record and it is a new world record for team Australia.

:17:27. > :17:30.The world-record holder on the individual 100 metres free brings

:17:31. > :17:37.them home on a new world record. Goodness me. Gold medal to

:17:38. > :17:49.Australia. Silver to the USA and the bronze medal. What a fantastic swim

:17:50. > :17:52.by the Canadians. Australia set the world-record two years ago. The

:17:53. > :17:57.second world record the competition so far will stop the Americans

:17:58. > :18:06.getting a national record. They pushed themselves all the way. A

:18:07. > :18:12.very emotional Cate Campbell. Just trying to check out the splits of

:18:13. > :18:27.some of the swimmers. 52.15 was Bronte Campbell. My maths not so

:18:28. > :18:33.good. Maybe 51 for Cate Campbell. 51.97, I think. The two legs of the

:18:34. > :18:41.Australian swimming team doing the job. Quite emotional already, on the

:18:42. > :18:50.left. Wouldn't you be? I would. Fantastic. Kisses all round. I would

:18:51. > :18:58.probably do that. You are lucky it was not me! I have been in a relay

:18:59. > :19:02.with you. You did not kiss me when we got a medal! It is a great swim

:19:03. > :19:10.for team Australia with a new record. Confirmation of the result

:19:11. > :19:18.of the final. Australia winning, a new world record. Three tenths of a

:19:19. > :19:28.second under their old world record. Fantastic bronze medal for Canada.

:19:29. > :19:33.That is the final final of the first day and it gives an indication of

:19:34. > :19:36.what will happen over the next week. Great world record from Australia,

:19:37. > :19:42.impressive swims from the sisters, who we will seek on their own later

:19:43. > :19:47.in the week. Both Campbell sisters, Cate Campbell, split 51.9,

:19:48. > :19:54.incredible. They have such a nice technique. They dominated. You never

:19:55. > :19:59.know on the Thursday. We joke and say certain countries have not

:20:00. > :20:04.travelled well. That is our little joke. The first day you see is

:20:05. > :20:11.someone, they are just not in form. This evening, the Aussies have

:20:12. > :20:18.clearly brought their A game. Even Katie Ledecky, who is not a

:20:19. > :20:23.sprinter. Casually going 52. It shows she is in great form, as well.

:20:24. > :20:30.Katie Ledecky is a lady we will see more of. And Adam Peaty is a guy we

:20:31. > :20:32.will see more of this week. He is in the final of the 100 metres

:20:33. > :20:37.breaststroke. He caught up with Sharron. Another

:20:38. > :20:43.great swim and second fastest time ever. Did you think you were

:20:44. > :20:48.rushing, wanting to break the record again? No. My coach just says keep

:20:49. > :20:56.chilled, enjoy the atmosphere, and that is what I did. I was so

:20:57. > :21:01.chilled. It did not feel like an Olympic semifinal. I feel there is

:21:02. > :21:05.more in the tank but I want to save myself and get the investment of all

:21:06. > :21:08.the work the past seven years and hopefully cash out tomorrow. It must

:21:09. > :21:14.give you a sense of confidence when you almost have a second on

:21:15. > :21:19.everybody else in the field. In 100 metres. It is great. It is tough

:21:20. > :21:27.Ross did not make it through. It would be great to have two GB labs

:21:28. > :21:32.in there. Hopefully I will do GB proud to tomorrow and show what GB

:21:33. > :21:37.is all about. Tell me about getting back to the village today. So many

:21:38. > :21:44.people congratulating me, it is crazy. That is the Olympics, the

:21:45. > :21:52.experience. My coach says use the least emotional energy as possible.

:21:53. > :21:58.It is tough, the world-record, replica -- replicating that at

:21:59. > :22:02.night. Get some rest. Adam Peaty will have lots of

:22:03. > :22:05.confidence. How difficult is it to go back to the village with

:22:06. > :22:10.team-mates who maybe did not get the fairy tale ending with no medal for

:22:11. > :22:16.Hannah Miley and no place in the final for Ross Murdoch. Hannah Miley

:22:17. > :22:21.stands out, my heart breaks for her. I am sure Adam will give her a big

:22:22. > :22:26.hug, along with everybody else on the team. That is what is great

:22:27. > :22:33.about the team, they just do not rally around Adam, who is doing

:22:34. > :22:38.well, but they make sure of the others. He has an energy about him.

:22:39. > :22:45.One of those people you want to be around. He is Mr Positive. He is

:22:46. > :22:50.such a team player. He will go back, he is sharing with James, and James

:22:51. > :22:55.will be disappointed. But he has an event tomorrow, which is more his

:22:56. > :22:59.main event. Not too many disappointments tonight, but that

:23:00. > :23:06.guy is a special man. Everybody will probably be asleep! He will go back

:23:07. > :23:09.and not see anyone. Are we still await, am I dreaming? That is a good

:23:10. > :23:16.point to say goodbye. We will be back tomorrow for the heats.

:23:17. > :23:25.Jason, please stop these two. Helen and the team, thanks. No medals for

:23:26. > :23:29.Team GB this evening but fingers crossed for Adam Peaty. Australia,

:23:30. > :23:36.two gold medals in the swimming pool, thinking back to London 2012,

:23:37. > :23:40.they had a miserable time in the swimming pool, following all sorts

:23:41. > :23:45.of changes with Australian swimming and a big review conducted and two

:23:46. > :23:50.gold medals tonight. We will switch sport and bring you football.

:23:51. > :24:02.Brazil's women's side are taking on Sweden in the Olympic Stadium. This

:24:03. > :24:06.is what has happened so far. Beatrice has scored the opening goal

:24:07. > :24:13.for Brazil. A mix-up in the Swedish defence. Looking on forlornly but

:24:14. > :24:26.the rest of the crowd celebrating wildly.

:24:27. > :24:34.Marta. And that was beautifully impudent. Wonderful improvisation.

:24:35. > :24:43.Brazil are on a roll. The crowd are loving it and Brazil leading the

:24:44. > :24:59.Sweden by two goals to nil. Marta. Penalty. Penalty... Cristiane went

:25:00. > :25:05.down in the box. And Marta comes out on top will stop the third goal for

:25:06. > :25:09.Brazil, right on the stroke of half-time. They are in cruise

:25:10. > :25:20.control in the Olympic Stadium. 3-0 up.

:25:21. > :25:26.Marta makes no mistake. Marta with the fourth. She had the time and

:25:27. > :25:35.space. She found the finish, as well. Brazil are on their way to

:25:36. > :25:45.winning their second game at these Olympic Games very comfortably.

:25:46. > :25:49.Marta, the superstar of Brazilian women's football. The men drew 0-0

:25:50. > :25:53.against South Africa the Brazilian fans loving and this tonight. Six

:25:54. > :26:18.minutes left to play. That was a nice ball in. Schelin

:26:19. > :26:28.puts it behind for another corner. The two Brazil players around her,

:26:29. > :26:33.hoping to get the shot away. It has been a tough night for the

:26:34. > :26:43.goalkeeper. Having to get the ball out of the back of the net four

:26:44. > :26:54.times. Yet another corner.

:26:55. > :26:57.Into the last five minutes and Brazil ending the game on the front

:26:58. > :27:23.foot. It was out wide. Beatriz. A fine

:27:24. > :27:27.goal! Beatriz with her second of the evening. That might be the best of

:27:28. > :27:35.the bunch. A beautiful finish from the number 16. Brazil have hit

:27:36. > :27:50.Sweden for five. A really excellent goal.

:27:51. > :28:03.One touch. And produces a super finish.

:28:04. > :28:12.Just keeps getting better for Brazil, this evening.

:28:13. > :28:23.They are looking like they will be difficult to stop. A long way to go

:28:24. > :28:28.in this tournament. The expectant home crowd, the expectant nation,

:28:29. > :28:34.hoping and dreaming of a gold medal. Well, those hopes and dreams will be

:28:35. > :28:39.fuelled by tonight's performance, because they have dispatched a

:28:40. > :28:48.decent and competent Sweden side. Sweden came into this game unbeaten

:28:49. > :28:54.this year. Only one goal conceded in their last nine matches. Ranked

:28:55. > :29:02.sixth in the world, two places above Rozelle, and Brazil have blown them

:29:03. > :29:10.away. -- above Brazil. And still thereby to be more here.

:29:11. > :29:47.The substitute... In the end it was cleared. Trying to

:29:48. > :29:48.place it. Desperate defending from Sweden, who got a lot of bodies in

:29:49. > :30:13.the way. Very impressive performance in all

:30:14. > :30:19.aspects, not just going forward, but Brazil have been solid defensively.

:30:20. > :30:31.Rafael in defence. Going forward, irresistible. Flag stays down, a

:30:32. > :30:36.chance here the Lotta Schelin and she takes it very, very well.

:30:37. > :30:48.There's the consolation for Sweden. Beating the offside trap. It was a

:30:49. > :30:55.cool finish. One side. -- onside. One touch, really good finish. It

:30:56. > :31:00.won't count for much. In the context of this game. It might count for

:31:01. > :31:22.something in terms of the goal difference.

:31:23. > :31:31.Lotta Schelin scoring for a third successive win big Games. It will

:31:32. > :31:39.prove little more than a consolation -- successive Olympic Games. Sweden

:31:40. > :31:49.have been comprehensively outplayed tonight. They will still need

:31:50. > :31:50.something, you feel, from the final game against China to make it

:31:51. > :32:22.through. Two minutes, added time. Still, Beatriz harrying. I think

:32:23. > :32:28.that might be one of the most impressive features of this Brazil

:32:29. > :32:32.performance. It sums it up, 5-1 up in the 91st minute and the centre

:32:33. > :32:41.forward is still desperately trying to close down the defender. The

:32:42. > :32:46.turn. Out comes the keeper, no problem. Great throw out. Marta is

:32:47. > :33:27.ahead. The fans have enjoyed themselves in

:33:28. > :33:32.the Olympic Stadium this evening. They've been treated not only to a

:33:33. > :33:44.victory, but a victory with style and flair, the Brazilian way. Marta

:33:45. > :33:49.comes forward for one final time. Full-time and the Olympic Stadium.

:33:50. > :33:58.Comprehensive victory for Brazil. Much, much better than Sweden. 5-1

:33:59. > :34:06.victory, two from Marta, two from Beatriz and one from Cristiane and

:34:07. > :34:11.playing some great football in the process. Brazil's women are looking

:34:12. > :34:18.very good indeed in this competition.

:34:19. > :34:23.He is right, they will take some stopping and yes, Brazil wants to

:34:24. > :34:27.win as many gold medal is as possible in the many sports on offer

:34:28. > :34:32.here in Rio but how they would love a double of men's and women's

:34:33. > :34:35.football gold medals. Still a lot of live sport going on right now,

:34:36. > :34:41.especially behind me on Copacabana beach. We have this beautiful

:34:42. > :34:45.vantage point from our studio. Is there a better sporting venue in the

:34:46. > :34:50.world right now? Under floodlights, the Beach Volleyball Arena. It's

:34:51. > :34:57.been going since 10am and they are still going at what, 10:50pm. The

:34:58. > :35:00.match currently being played, Switzerland against China in the

:35:01. > :35:06.women's Beach Volleyball Arena edition. China taking the first set,

:35:07. > :35:30.leading by one set to zero and they have the edge in the second.

:35:31. > :36:59.COMMENTATOR: Forrer unable to bring it back into play. China leading.

:37:00. > :37:04.Verge-Depre following the sand in the air. Some players will follow it

:37:05. > :37:08.up with their hand, others will Kick It Out with their feet, to gauge

:37:09. > :37:17.whether wind is blowing, where will serve the ball. -- kick it up. She's

:37:18. > :37:24.been stopped twice in this set and now she's able to stop Wang.

:37:25. > :37:44.Excellent blocking. Switzerland edging in front. A

:37:45. > :37:49.little bit tracks to the net, Verge-Depre getting a good touch and

:37:50. > :37:55.Forrer with the swing. Unable to find the angle. Maybe another chance

:37:56. > :37:59.for Forrer. Just as we saw earlier in this game, swinging a bit too

:38:00. > :38:07.early on the ball and not getting the height that she would have

:38:08. > :38:10.wanted, she was denied by the net. Trying to hit around the body,

:38:11. > :38:28.didn't really reach up to take the ball at its highest point.

:38:29. > :38:35.Still China are asking all the questions. So far, so good, she's

:38:36. > :38:59.answering them. Forrer reading it. Has that caught?

:39:00. > :39:03.Yes, right on the sideline from Verge-Depre. She could see that

:39:04. > :39:12.Forrer was in the sand. Taking matters into her own hands and

:39:13. > :39:15.Switzerland taking the points. Brilliantly done by Verge-Depre,

:39:16. > :39:59.enjoyed by Forrer. It is China calling the time-out.

:40:00. > :40:01.Two blocks the peace now. The Verge-Depre and Fan Wang.

:40:02. > :41:03.Switzerland are in the driving seat. Forrer thought it was going in line

:41:04. > :41:08.and she ran there very early. Wang Fan saw the space opening up

:41:09. > :41:16.crosscourt. That's half the battle, it's a waiting game, in offence and

:41:17. > :41:28.defence. Almost like a staring contest, who's going to blink first?

:41:29. > :41:35.Great up. Great finish. China getting back to within one.

:41:36. > :41:47.STUDIO: Nearly out of time but time to give you the headlines from

:41:48. > :41:50.today. Adam Peaty breaking the world record in the 100 metre breaststroke

:41:51. > :41:59.heats and he returned later to book his place in the final. Britain

:42:00. > :42:04.qualifying for the final, Max Whitlock and Louis Smith qualifying

:42:05. > :42:08.in the pommel horse. It was not to be for Team GB in a dramatic men's

:42:09. > :42:14.road race, Geraint Thomas crashing out and Chris Froome never in it,

:42:15. > :42:20.gold going to Greg Van Avermaet from Belgium.

:42:21. > :42:28.Burly days, I know, but it's worth looking at the medal table. -- early

:42:29. > :42:34.days. A terrific day for Australia in the summing Paul, two gold

:42:35. > :42:41.medals. What a Day for Hungary, also winning two gold medals. -- swimming

:42:42. > :42:46.pool. Hazel is going to guide you through the first part of the day on

:42:47. > :43:18.BBC One. Heather Stanning and Helen Glover in the rowing.

:43:19. > :43:25.That's it from us for now. We've had crashes and splashes on day one of

:43:26. > :43:30.the real Olympics but let's hope it's a golden day two for Adam

:43:31. > :44:08.Peaty. Thanks for watching. Goodbye for now.

:44:09. > :44:10.Geraint Thomas crashing out of the Olympic Games. Massive world record.
