:00:00. > :00:08.level to give it, and they give it a seven. That still allows him to have

:00:09. > :00:17.quite a big total. It does. A lot of gymnasts will stand on their feet as

:00:18. > :00:23.goal 14.9, 15, which was similar to what he scored earlier. Radivilov's

:00:24. > :00:32.score is in and he gets an average of 15.0 33.

:00:33. > :00:40.Now Kenzo Shirai, we have seen the rotating bolts, this one will all be

:00:41. > :00:49.about twisting. And this is likely to be another first, the 6.4 is the

:00:50. > :00:55.three and a half twists. That was very clean, the only did three in

:00:56. > :01:03.qualification, we saw him training this, and that was a fantastic

:01:04. > :01:08.effort. Huge disappointment on the floor for Kenzo Shirai, trying to

:01:09. > :01:18.put that right here. What will be the story with his second vault?

:01:19. > :01:23.That was mesmerising. I have seen do the itching to with quite a lot of

:01:24. > :01:31.steps out of it, but the torque he gets there is a small step, that is

:01:32. > :01:40.unbelievable. -- I have seen him do the Yurchenko. But that will be a

:01:41. > :01:45.Shirai. Really has been a special championships, hasn't it? We have

:01:46. > :01:54.had a real celebration, Chris. We have watched two vaulters push the

:01:55. > :01:58.boundaries and produced their own new elements. We have talked about

:01:59. > :02:03.the difficulty, and building the score, trying to achieve the highest

:02:04. > :02:13.execution possible, but because of that the code book is open. 15.833

:02:14. > :02:19.for his first vault. Needs to be different, Sue Bird two and a half

:02:20. > :02:27.twists from the half turn, he is so clean. -- superb. Not the highest of

:02:28. > :02:33.starred scores, 5.6, but it was clean, and he has a huge score for

:02:34. > :02:38.the first vault, so the average will still be big, at there challenging.

:02:39. > :02:50.This is his first Olympics, 19 years old, and he has never meddled in

:02:51. > :02:55.vault at the World Championships. That was so clean, a small split on

:02:56. > :03:03.the horse, the judges will deduct for that. Legs were crossed in the,

:03:04. > :03:08.dead central, and a tiny hop on landing. He was spinning so fast,

:03:09. > :03:13.the judges would never have seen that, surely, Chris. No, they

:03:14. > :03:19.probably won't, that is very well performed. Two and a half twists,

:03:20. > :03:24.really pleased to see him perform well, he was so disappointed with

:03:25. > :03:31.himself on the floor. Shirai goes into the lead with an average of

:03:32. > :03:42.15.4 99, that is a massive score. But two very good vaulters to come.

:03:43. > :03:47.First up is Marian Dragulescu, four times world champion, this is his

:03:48. > :03:52.fourth Olympics now, and he will be doing his trademark vault, the

:03:53. > :04:02.handspring, two somersaults with a half turn on the end. Got an Olympic

:04:03. > :04:10.medal in Athens 2004. He was second at the World Championships last

:04:11. > :04:14.year. Back from retirement. Fifth highest qualifier. And when we first

:04:15. > :04:21.saw this, we thought it was absolutely unbelievable. It is still

:04:22. > :04:27.excellent, really good, he landed bolt upright, just that pace, very

:04:28. > :04:34.impressive. Yeah, that is the Dragulescu. Just practising his

:04:35. > :04:38.entry that they have to do for the second bolt, because they have to be

:04:39. > :04:49.different. The high tea gets on that. It is amazing, he manages to

:04:50. > :04:53.kick out and spot the landing. What is impressive about this vault, the

:04:54. > :04:58.legs are hardly split. A lot of gymnasts will do the Dragulescu, but

:04:59. > :05:08.their legs will be split, and that is why it is the Dragulescu, and he

:05:09. > :05:11.performs it the best. Lovely style now over the years, we have seen him

:05:12. > :05:18.struggle a bit with the second vault. Came in early and watch

:05:19. > :05:25.training, and he did several of those, he obviously feels good. The

:05:26. > :05:33.height the gymnasts can get off this platform is really quite amazing.

:05:34. > :05:39.15.266, the second-highest score we have seen so far in this men's vault

:05:40. > :05:46.final, so he is posting a 6.2 difficulty now, this one is slightly

:05:47. > :05:51.harder the last. Well, he is being ambitious, he needs to control the

:05:52. > :05:57.half turn, beautifully performed, two and a half twists Bath. That is

:05:58. > :06:05.the best series of vaults I have ever seen him do. For a 6.2

:06:06. > :06:08.difficulty, to put in that sort of execution, and this gymnasts just

:06:09. > :06:15.loves competition, he loves to feel the crowd and react. He does. With

:06:16. > :06:20.this vault, you can quite easily miss the turn, with the flip and the

:06:21. > :06:25.handspring, but you will see at here, he gets so much height, I knew

:06:26. > :06:36.he would make it around. Almost sticks the landing as well.

:06:37. > :06:46.Quite tidy, not many deductions, not much for them to take off. This will

:06:47. > :06:51.be a big challenge, I think. Can he get up into the medals? At this

:06:52. > :06:59.stage there are still four gymnasts to go. What does the future hold for

:07:00. > :07:15.Marian Dragulescu and his Olympic dreams? He is in second at the

:07:16. > :07:19.moment, 15.449. 15.449 equals Shirai as an average, but because of the

:07:20. > :07:34.execution, Shirai is in the lead at the moment. But for how long? The

:07:35. > :07:42.two time world champion. Double fightback, massive vault. The speed

:07:43. > :07:46.with which he rotates! He did the dragon rescue in the pike position.

:07:47. > :08:01.The Pike gets a little bit more difficulty than the tuck. He split

:08:02. > :08:06.his legs just before the half turn, quite a big step on landing, but a

:08:07. > :08:16.6.4 difficulty score, so he has got room for the deductions. When you

:08:17. > :08:26.are coming from such a huge height with so much rotation, the forces

:08:27. > :08:33.going through the legs, no surprise they are having to take a step.

:08:34. > :08:44.Well, Ri Se Gwan has another 6.4 in the locker. 15.616 for his first

:08:45. > :08:48.vault. If you post another difficulty score of 6.4, which we

:08:49. > :08:55.think he is going to do, he is going to have an advantage as far as the

:08:56. > :09:01.difficulty is concerned. So this is all about execution, can Ri Se Gwan

:09:02. > :09:08.from the peoples of career vault himself into the lead? And we have

:09:09. > :09:16.seen him do this vault before, and I think it is amazing. Full twist off,

:09:17. > :09:24.that was a great landing for the most complex vault you will ever

:09:25. > :09:29.see. He has hardly any time to spot that landing, and somehow he

:09:30. > :09:33.managed! I thought he had stuck it for a minute, I think the landing

:09:34. > :09:47.shocked him, but I think that will be enough to move him into first

:09:48. > :09:58.place. Let's just see the timing on this. The high tea gets allowed him

:09:59. > :10:02.to actually perform it, there will be another in this final, and it

:10:03. > :10:08.will come down to who landed best. -- the height he gets. The way he

:10:09. > :10:12.drops his shoulder in midair to get the turn in, then the back

:10:13. > :10:16.somersault over the top, and then there is the floor very quickly! The

:10:17. > :10:30.ability to know where you are to perform like that, just unbelievable

:10:31. > :10:39.awareness needed. So he is in the lead with 15.691, he leads Kenzo

:10:40. > :10:49.Shirai, who is in second, Dragulescu is in third place. A 6.0 difficulty,

:10:50. > :10:51.here we go, the double Tsukahara, and really these gymnasts are

:10:52. > :10:58.performing these hugely difficult skills with nonchalance. It is mind

:10:59. > :11:05.blowing how they are managing to achieve this, at this level, under

:11:06. > :11:10.this pressure! And how quickly it is over, Dan. The vault final can go

:11:11. > :11:15.either way, we see quite a lot of gymnasts going for the big vaults,

:11:16. > :11:23.but today everyone is hitting them, it shows how well-prepared they are

:11:24. > :11:28.for this final. And this is what you want, this is a final where

:11:29. > :11:32.everybody is getting through, nobody is falling, so this gold medal is

:11:33. > :11:36.going to be won properly. That is really what you want from every

:11:37. > :11:42.final, and actually it is what we have had in this Olympics. All the

:11:43. > :11:51.gymnasts have been in such good shape. So much so that it has taken

:11:52. > :12:01.us by surprise, hasn't it? It has indeed. 15.375, fourth at the

:12:02. > :12:05.Olympics in London. He has said he wants to retire after this Olympics,

:12:06. > :12:13.so this could well be the last vault we see from Tomas Gonzalez. And with

:12:14. > :12:17.a difficulty of only 5.6, he needs to be absolutely perfect in

:12:18. > :12:24.execution. The step on landing, but it was lovely and tight through the

:12:25. > :12:28.air. Bad is it, he gives a big wave, that is potentially his swansong,

:12:29. > :12:33.and what a way to finish a wonderful career. -- that is it. 30 years old,

:12:34. > :12:43.you don't blame him for sitting down, do you?! No! I think that

:12:44. > :12:48.vault was really well performed. You see here his legs locked together,

:12:49. > :12:52.toes pointed, opens out for the landing, it looks like the flaw

:12:53. > :13:02.found them, rather than he found the flaw, which is why he took a step.

:13:03. > :13:11.-- floor. In fact, his ankles buckled a little bit, didn't they?

:13:12. > :13:19.He is old is in, 15.137 for Tomas Gonzalez. -- the result is in.

:13:20. > :13:31.Execution of 9.3. We have enjoyed watching him vault over his career,

:13:32. > :13:35.happy retirement! Oleg Verniaiev now, silver in the all-around

:13:36. > :13:42.competition, seventh highest qualifier in vault, European

:13:43. > :13:45.Championship this year. And he was just outside the medals at the World

:13:46. > :13:51.Championships last year, starting off with a vault, as you concede, on

:13:52. > :13:59.the right-hand side, a difficulty of 6.0. Quite a slight gymnasts to be a

:14:00. > :14:04.specialist vaulter, but so powerful, and the times it beautifully. We

:14:05. > :14:12.have seen that more than once, and he landed on the floor, it didn't

:14:13. > :14:17.hit him, Dan. That was almost perfect, and we have seen him do

:14:18. > :14:23.that time and again, he will soon have to upgraded to the pike

:14:24. > :14:31.position, because he finds it too easy. He does a full somersault by

:14:32. > :14:35.the time he is level. Asean opens into the half turn, he has got so

:14:36. > :14:48.much time to spot the landing. -- as he opens. So where would you deduct,

:14:49. > :14:54.cowboy? May be 0.3 there, and a slight wobble on landing, maybe 0.1,

:14:55. > :14:59.but apart from that, not much else that I could see. Gymnasts often

:15:00. > :15:10.bring their own chalk from their own gyms back home. Verniaiev, 15.400,

:15:11. > :15:13.six on the difficulty, 9.4 on execution, up with the highest

:15:14. > :15:35.scores on execution that we have had here. The penultimate gymnast.

:15:36. > :15:46.And the less favoured vault. Needs to concentrate. Super triple twist.

:15:47. > :15:57.He has such a repertoire. Multiple somersaulting, multiple twists in

:15:58. > :16:05.the second one. Third place at the moment. There was quite a big hop on

:16:06. > :16:14.his landing. It is a really nice triple twist in the air. He could

:16:15. > :16:19.have moved into the medals, but I think he is just going to be

:16:20. > :16:23.outside. He doesn't quite bring his arms out with authority. You have to

:16:24. > :16:28.see the gymnast come out of the twist. As we say, your arms are

:16:29. > :16:36.liked your parachute to come out and kill the twist, ready from landing.

:16:37. > :16:40.He didn't do it with authority. He's such a fabulous all-round gymnast,

:16:41. > :16:49.though. And he has still more finals to come here. Tomorrow, we have Nile

:16:50. > :17:14.Wilson for Great Britain and Amy Tinkler on floor. Verniaiev is equal

:17:15. > :17:18.fourth. 15.316 is the average. The last gymnast to go is the

:17:19. > :17:23.second-highest qualifier, the gymnast that has just taken a bronze

:17:24. > :17:33.medal on rings. Got a silver in London. Two times champion in

:17:34. > :17:39.Europe, Denis Ablyazin. This could be very impressive. This lad is the

:17:40. > :17:52.definition of power. Can he contain it?

:17:53. > :17:58.A step forwards, which means he was slightly under rotating. But

:17:59. > :18:05.unbelievable vaulting from these guys. It was the same fault that Ri

:18:06. > :18:10.Se-gwang performed. I don't think it was quite as good. It comes down to

:18:11. > :18:17.the landing. There was a big step forward, so everything is now on

:18:18. > :18:24.this next vault. To make sure he lands and pushes into the medals. He

:18:25. > :18:47.is looking for a score over 15.449. Quite a deep landing. His chest was

:18:48. > :19:01.low. So I think the execution will be lower than Ri Se-gwang. 15.6,

:19:02. > :19:22.down a tent on Ri Se-gwang's. -- down a tent.

:19:23. > :19:33.A big step, but I am so impressed with these gymnasts' vaulting. They

:19:34. > :19:42.are not doing the same type of fault. Ablyazin is not holding back.

:19:43. > :19:47.Does he have another medal to go with the bronze he just got on

:19:48. > :19:51.rings? I think he is going to scrape into the medals. I don't think he

:19:52. > :19:57.will be in first. A step backwards here on the landing. That will keep

:19:58. > :20:11.him away from first. It will be close, but he might just sneak in.

:20:12. > :20:28.He might sneak in on start difficulty. Can Marian Dragulescu

:20:29. > :20:36.hold on? Well-nigh Ri Se-gwang script a metal? Ri Se-gwang wins!

:20:37. > :20:41.Here's your Olympic vault champion. Two times world champion and now

:20:42. > :20:56.Olympic champion. The 31-year-old from the People's Republic of Korea.

:20:57. > :21:00.And Kenzo Shirai finally gets a medal in the individual apparatus

:21:01. > :21:10.finals. After his upset on floor, he takes the bronze. Marian Dragulescu

:21:11. > :21:16.will finish in fourth. We knew it was going to be big, Dan. We did. I

:21:17. > :21:22.was really impressed with Kenzo's three and a half twists. If he can

:21:23. > :21:29.up his second vault to a triple twist, he could be challenging for

:21:30. > :21:35.the gold. Well, we have seen two vaults being named here at the

:21:36. > :21:43.Olympics. Impressive stuff from Abliazin as well. Two finals, two

:21:44. > :21:50.medals. Not quite as impressive as two finals, two gold medals! Not

:21:51. > :21:56.quite! Ri Se-gwang. Two incredible vaults. Highest qualifier, and

:21:57. > :22:26.victorious yet again. The next final in store for you will

:22:27. > :22:45.be the women's bin. That will be after the men's medal ceremony. --

:22:46. > :22:49.the women's beam. Denis Ablyazin had a celebration and a half. We had

:22:50. > :22:55.traditional Greek dancing going on. The Brazilians were going crazy, and

:22:56. > :23:00.this place was just dumping. At that point, Abliazin legs it out of the

:23:01. > :23:15.arena and then refocuses for vault. And he certainly did a good job

:23:16. > :23:21.getting that silver medal. The floor area today makes way for the medal

:23:22. > :23:26.podium. We were saying what a celebration it has been for

:23:27. > :23:31.gymnastics here. There was a really good feeling in the Rio Olympic

:23:32. > :23:34.Arena around gymnastics. I think everybody is mesmerised, so

:23:35. > :23:42.impressed by how people are pushing themselves to the limit. Absolutely.

:23:43. > :23:47.It seems obvious to say that everyone is going to peak for the

:23:48. > :23:53.Olympics, but the gymnasts have had two long days of competition, and it

:23:54. > :23:58.was really competitive. Very difficult to make the top eight on

:23:59. > :24:03.any apparatus. And every gymnast really looked in tremendous shape.

:24:04. > :24:06.So if you made the top eight, for a lot of gymnasts, that is the big

:24:07. > :24:12.challenge, never mind if you medal or whatever. You come here to make

:24:13. > :24:18.the final. And the finals are showing just that. Everyone is at

:24:19. > :24:21.the top of their game. They are, and the consistency I am seeing at such

:24:22. > :24:30.a high level is what is impressing me the most. We are not seeing many

:24:31. > :24:34.falls at all. This was the vault you were so impressed with. Yes, to fit

:24:35. > :24:42.in three and a half twists is incredible. We know he is renowned

:24:43. > :24:46.for twisting from this vault work, but that is incredible. And it is a

:24:47. > :24:51.blind landing. He drops his shoulder. It is not as if the floor

:24:52. > :24:55.is coming to him. A very challenging vault to land. It is, because there

:24:56. > :25:01.is hardly any time to spot the landing. You are literally twisting

:25:02. > :25:10.and then the floor is there. That is probably one of the best he has ever

:25:11. > :25:16.landed. Abliazin was just a bit short on this. You wonder whether

:25:17. > :25:24.that was a result of having won a medal on rings and being rushed into

:25:25. > :25:28.this final. Well, he gets himself a silver medal. Ri Se-gwang picks the

:25:29. > :25:30.gold, Denis Ablyazin silver and Kenzo Shirai twists his way to

:25:31. > :26:59.bronze. It takes four years of hard work to

:27:00. > :27:03.be an Olympian, and it is great to say the hard work is paying off for

:27:04. > :27:07.the British athletes. 40 medals already at Rio 2016 and still a few

:27:08. > :27:12.days to come. As you can see at the Olympic Park, the breeze has picked

:27:13. > :27:16.up. We have wind here. If you don't mind showing them the trees swaying

:27:17. > :27:19.in the evening sunlight here, actually, that spindly thing is not

:27:20. > :27:26.the greatest demonstration, but you can see that the wind has picked up.

:27:27. > :27:31.That would have been much more helpful at the sailing like, whether

:27:32. > :27:35.sailing has been postponed for the day -- the sailing like. We will

:27:36. > :27:38.talk about that later, but Great Britain are guaranteed a sailing

:27:39. > :27:42.gold medal for Giles Scott. But he has to finish is run in the Finn

:27:43. > :27:46.tomorrow before he is awarded the medal. He is obviously feeling good

:27:47. > :27:50.about it and earlier he caught up with Shirley Robertson.

:27:51. > :27:57.Giles, you are always level-headed, no emotion. But I saw emotion today.

:27:58. > :28:04.Yeah, you did. You're right, I do try and stay level-headed. There was

:28:05. > :28:10.no way I could have done that after that race. It got the better of me.

:28:11. > :28:16.It really did dawn on me what my coach have put together over the

:28:17. > :28:20.last four years. It was an amazingly special moment. Four years ago, you

:28:21. > :28:25.watched Ben Ainslie win his gold medal, knowing you were world-class

:28:26. > :28:31.and were just short of gold. Four years later, it's yours. Yeah, it

:28:32. > :28:36.is. Four years ago, I have said it time and time again, it was a pretty

:28:37. > :28:39.dark place. But what we have managed to do from building on that

:28:40. > :28:43.disappointment is put a great campaign together and come here to

:28:44. > :28:52.Rio and win in the way I have, it is just amazing. We have had such

:28:53. > :28:59.amazing history in the Finn. To be able to put my name alongside the

:29:00. > :29:05.others is very special to me. You're about to hit the shore. This is a

:29:06. > :29:09.lovely moment before you hit the shore and the media are there in

:29:10. > :29:14.your life will change forever. Yeah, I'm not sure my life will change for

:29:15. > :29:17.ever! I hope it won't. But the Olympic Games has been such a huge

:29:18. > :29:25.part of my life ever since I was a teenager. It's been ten years of

:29:26. > :29:32.solid work to get here. I am just really proud. Everybody assumed you

:29:33. > :29:37.would win this gold. Summarise how hard it has been? Yeah, it's a funny

:29:38. > :29:43.thing to come to a regatta as big as the Olympic Games and have everyone

:29:44. > :29:48.telling you it's a sure thing. It's not just the media, but its people

:29:49. > :29:54.around you and people in your team who just assume you're going to

:29:55. > :29:59.deliver. Actually delivering is not as simple as people think. It's

:30:00. > :30:07.incredibly stressful, hard work. But once you manage it, it's incredible.

:30:08. > :30:12.Well, you won it in style. You have to compete in the medal race, but no

:30:13. > :30:13.one can beat you. Giles Scott, Olympic champion of 2016,

:30:14. > :30:23.congratulations. That smile will be even more huge

:30:24. > :30:28.when he takes to the water for his gold medal. No sailing so far today,

:30:29. > :30:31.we will bring you up to date on whether they can get out later, we

:30:32. > :30:36.will cease of the British guys in action. It is gusty down here at the

:30:37. > :30:42.park! We will talk about the diving now, where things are going down at

:30:43. > :30:48.the Aquatics Centre, the first opportunity for us to see Jack

:30:49. > :30:51.Laugher, who you will be won the three metres springboard alongside

:30:52. > :30:54.Chris Meares a few days ago, who was going in the individual

:30:55. > :31:05.preliminaries. Before that, let's see Freddie Woodward going.

:31:06. > :31:17.Freddie Woodward of the city of Sheffield, his opening dive.

:31:18. > :31:22.Fantastic dive from Freddie, really nice, Tom Owen is at home, the city

:31:23. > :31:30.of Sheffield, they will be glued to the TV. Freddie is doing a great

:31:31. > :31:32.job, let's hope we can continue. Vertical entry, hardly any splash,

:31:33. > :31:46.good work. The arrival of Jack Laugher on the

:31:47. > :31:53.board, his opening dive will be coming up, a forward two and a half

:31:54. > :31:58.somersaults with two twists. I was wondering how he was going to get

:31:59. > :32:05.on, his first dive back from the amazing scenes in the pool where he

:32:06. > :32:08.and Chris Meares became Olympic champions, the first-ever Team GB

:32:09. > :32:17.diving Olympic champions, and that is very pool by his standards. --

:32:18. > :32:21.poor. Very short vertical, a tentative start from Jack Laugher,

:32:22. > :32:27.he will have to shake off what happened a few days ago and get into

:32:28. > :32:32.his diving, and I am sure he will, but that is not a good start. That

:32:33. > :32:37.was Jack Laugher taking to the springboard earlier, now we can go

:32:38. > :32:41.to the Aquatics Centre to see if the Olympic champion from the synchro

:32:42. > :32:58.event can better that score, back to the commentary team.

:32:59. > :33:06.Getting into the competition, albeit slightly slowly, we will see some

:33:07. > :33:17.bigger and more impressive stuff from this man as we go on. Here

:33:18. > :33:21.comes the marks for Hausding, they are a little bit slow sometimes. For

:33:22. > :33:26.those of you who have just joined us on BBC Four, Jack Laugher is 14th at

:33:27. > :33:34.the moment, Freddie Woodward is sixth, still quite a few to go in

:33:35. > :33:44.round one, and also we have Knight-Wisdom taking part. Morales

:33:45. > :33:52.looked OK on the take-off, and then he makes a bit of a botched job on

:33:53. > :33:58.the end. So all looking good, slightly cramped in the pike shape,

:33:59. > :34:09.misses his entry, misses his hands, does not get his grab, and the marks

:34:10. > :34:17.will reflect that. The first male Jamaican dive ever, night wisdom

:34:18. > :34:25.from the city of Leeds. -- Knight-Wisdom. Morales, who has just

:34:26. > :34:30.gone, 17. You can hear the wind whistling around the commentary box,

:34:31. > :34:35.it was sedate when we started, but it has got up. Andrea Chiarabini,

:34:36. > :34:45.back two and a half somersaults with pike. The best school so far is from

:34:46. > :34:50.the Chinese. This is a second Olympic Games, he's only 21, he did

:34:51. > :34:54.not make it through the preliminaries four years ago. He is

:34:55. > :34:59.four years more experienced now, beat a little close to the diving

:35:00. > :35:06.board, and it is a fine line between getting far enough away not being so

:35:07. > :35:10.far that you call yourself a lack of control. The dive to the middle of

:35:11. > :35:17.the pool is very difficult to control, so we are seeing some

:35:18. > :35:26.faltering, some mixed stuff. I mean, it is really windy, as you can here.

:35:27. > :35:31.Look at him leaning into it a little bit, Ipsen, it is pretty windy on

:35:32. > :35:41.the boards as well. We have seen someone hit the board, we move on to

:35:42. > :35:47.Ipsen of the USA. Nice stuff from Ipsen, what the judges are looking

:35:48. > :35:51.for is vertical entry with hardly any splash or no splash for maximum

:35:52. > :35:56.points. Seven judges, the two highest and lowest are deleted to

:35:57. > :36:00.leave three scores which are then totalled, multiplied by the degree

:36:01. > :36:08.of difficulty to give you the dive total. Every single one of these

:36:09. > :36:15.counts, and Ipsen's scores are as follows. Remember, the ones with the

:36:16. > :36:20.lines through do not count. The total is multiplied by the degree of

:36:21. > :36:29.difficulty, hence we arrived at 72 for Christian Ipsen. Now the

:36:30. > :36:39.Canadian, Gagne, back two and a half somersaults with pike. It is a nice

:36:40. > :36:45.dive, we have had three on the trot now, back two and they have in the

:36:46. > :36:50.pike position. Good board work, into the pike shape, just Bananaman a

:36:51. > :37:01.little bit, arching through his lower back excessively. And over he

:37:02. > :37:09.goes. Yes, the marks for Gagne, then, 63, another easy computation.

:37:10. > :37:17.That is not sharp with the upper echelon, Jack Laugher, he had a

:37:18. > :37:21.disappointing opening. Oliver Dingley, formally of England, now of

:37:22. > :37:31.Ireland, 66. Anyone got a parachute? The wind is really getting up, look

:37:32. > :37:44.at that! Yes, a punchy start from Rosset, it

:37:45. > :37:52.coming out with this dive, which is 3.4 degrees of difficulty, but it is

:37:53. > :37:58.actually a tough dive, you do not have the step like you do on the

:37:59. > :38:03.reverse, so it is a tough dive. He likes to open with it, throwing down

:38:04. > :38:10.his marker, many of his fellow competitors started with easier

:38:11. > :38:16.dives, a game of tactics, 74.8 FOI him. That puts into fifth place at

:38:17. > :38:19.the moment. Now, my colleagues from Tunnel 7 are not very confident

:38:20. > :38:28.about the Australians going through the final. -- Channel 7. Not even

:38:29. > :38:32.confident about getting to the competition at the moment! They do

:38:33. > :38:40.not believe Grant Nel will make it into the top 12. Nice work, well, I

:38:41. > :38:47.am going to back him if his fellow countrymen do not think he has got

:38:48. > :38:52.what it takes, 28 years old, he will be putting in as much effort as

:38:53. > :38:58.humanly possible to get six goods dives in. That is one out of one for

:38:59. > :39:01.now, he is going to get eights on this, even though he could tidy up

:39:02. > :39:14.that pike shape, he is a little bit cramped. 74.40, at the moment there

:39:15. > :39:18.is no power in Sydney, so they are not going anywhere! They may well be

:39:19. > :39:24.taking the BBC coverage, which is probably illegal, but they will be

:39:25. > :39:32.doing it anyway. And to Kvasha of the Ukraine, inward three and a half

:39:33. > :39:36.somersaults with tuck. Jack Laugher has disappeared off my screen, he is

:39:37. > :39:44.that far down at the moment, with another four to go.

:39:45. > :39:55.It is super windy. Yeah, OK, that wind is really picking up, in fact

:39:56. > :40:02.there is paperwork flying around the place, packets of crisps being blown

:40:03. > :40:08.off the media things! It is all pretty heavy. In fact, this is going

:40:09. > :40:17.to make this competition really, really interesting. So the referee

:40:18. > :40:23.will, well, I presume the referee will be OK with what has happened,

:40:24. > :40:27.which means Kvasha has said the wind is picking up, I need to step

:40:28. > :40:32.forward because I am balancing on my tip toes. He is taking his time. He

:40:33. > :40:39.does not want the wind to blow him over the board, because he might

:40:40. > :40:46.edit like Zakharov did at the beginning of the round.

:40:47. > :40:56.Has done a good job on that dive under the circumstances, shakes his

:40:57. > :41:01.head, you did not see it, but I did, watching ever live. The wind pushing

:41:02. > :41:07.him back on the board, OK, hang on a second. Anyway, this is his attempt,

:41:08. > :41:11.the dive is good, aerial work is excellent, marginal over rotation.

:41:12. > :41:21.Well, actually, it is a bit more than marginal. That is windy! So

:41:22. > :41:29.71.40, not as much damage as it could have been. Considering he had

:41:30. > :41:37.to go for a second time, that is OK. Now onto Benedetti of Italy, really

:41:38. > :41:44.tough at the moment to get yourself composed. Certainly to execute dives

:41:45. > :41:53.of this complexity, a lower degree of difficulty, 3.0. Very neat and

:41:54. > :41:59.tidy, very precise, beautiful rip entry, just a tad over vertical. A

:42:00. > :42:03.good take-off, maybe he could wait for the board a bit more to get even

:42:04. > :42:08.more height. See the ankles washing over, but he keeps the splashdown.

:42:09. > :42:16.He might sneak a few eights from the judges. Oh, then again, he might

:42:17. > :42:25.not. You got one, but it didn't count. Now, the Mexicans are in,

:42:26. > :42:28.making some noise, not anywhere near the noise we will get when the

:42:29. > :42:35.Brazilian goes in a couple of divers. This is Pacheco, we saw him

:42:36. > :42:37.in the sink row, this is in the individual. Inward three and a half

:42:38. > :42:54.somersaults with tuck, 3.4. Hanging onto my papers, sorry! My

:42:55. > :42:59.God, it is incredible at here! I am having more difficulty with the wind

:43:00. > :43:04.than he is. Beautiful take-off. He is going to get eight from the

:43:05. > :43:09.judges on this. Very neat and tidy, always has been, even up on the

:43:10. > :43:12.platform in the early part of his career, now on the springboard. He

:43:13. > :43:17.can be a little bit inconsistent sometimes. But he looks as though he

:43:18. > :43:21.is in good shape, eight is exactly what he will be wanting to open up

:43:22. > :43:29.his campaign. Certainly in good shape score wise, that is the

:43:30. > :43:40.second-best mark we have had behind Yuan Cao. Here comes Chavez Banda of

:43:41. > :43:45.Australia. Yeah, the former Mexican, who made the switch to Australia in

:43:46. > :43:56.2015, and finally enough that his is Mexican coach, who is an Australian

:43:57. > :44:00.resident. Using the board, he is a one metre specialist, I have seen

:44:01. > :44:06.him compete well at that result, but it is not an Olympic event. So here

:44:07. > :44:11.he is, starting his three metres campaign, a bit of a grimace as he

:44:12. > :44:17.waits for the scores. It can be a tortuous process, but that would

:44:18. > :44:22.give him 64.6, and that is not widely raw is going around the

:44:23. > :44:30.Aquatics Centre, as we go to the man who was about to take to the board,

:44:31. > :44:39.the only Brazilian in the final, Cesar Castro. Whatever the judges

:44:40. > :44:43.say will not go down well with the crowd, they are never happy! The

:44:44. > :44:49.rounds off the first round of 29 divers, six rounds in total,

:44:50. > :44:59.remember. It is like being in a wind tunnel, so difficult for the divers.

:45:00. > :45:04.Very, very nicely executed dive, so easy, though, 3.0 degrees of

:45:05. > :45:12.difficulty, his fourth Olympic Games. He has always done this dive,

:45:13. > :45:15.33 years old, must be amazing to dive here right at the end of your

:45:16. > :45:23.career in front of your home crowd, and open up with 8.0, 8.5. This is a

:45:24. > :45:29.beauty, it is a low degree of difficulty, as are pretty much all

:45:30. > :45:37.of his dives compare to the movers and shakers in this contest.

:45:38. > :45:44.It is the first time the crowd have been happy with the judges' scoring,

:45:45. > :45:59.as they have already seen it. The wind is whipping up again. You

:46:00. > :46:05.can hear it, can't you? No home representation on the first page.

:46:06. > :46:16.Freddie Woodward qualified in tenth place. We are looking for Jack

:46:17. > :46:23.Laugher on page number three. But do not despair, because we have some

:46:24. > :46:32.big tariff dives from Jack Laugher still to come. Anybody got a kite?

:46:33. > :46:36.Perfect, I did a bit of kite surfing when I was in the Caribbean a few

:46:37. > :46:41.weeks ago. These are perfect conditions for it! In fact, can we

:46:42. > :46:46.pause this competition and let's all go kite surfing this afternoon. The

:46:47. > :46:49.problem is, as we knew it was going to be, with this being the first

:46:50. > :46:58.outdoor Olympic diving competition in Atlanta, Knowle, Barcelona. It

:46:59. > :47:03.got a bit windy in Atlanta, but Barcelona had an amazing pool. Says

:47:04. > :47:09.in Sydney, it has all been indoors. This is the first outdoor pool we

:47:10. > :47:14.have had for diving since 1996, kind of. That is why we have what we

:47:15. > :47:15.have, whistling into our microphones at the moment. But we will move on

:47:16. > :47:31.swiftly into Round 2. A good start for armoured and is ER

:47:32. > :48:00.Azman -- for Azman. He is such a dynamic athlete. They

:48:01. > :48:05.are like springs in his legs. He makes that dive so easily. If I was

:48:06. > :48:12.his coach, I would be encouraging him to do a back three and a half.

:48:13. > :48:23.He has tonnes of time. Very flamboyant. Hello, mother, can you

:48:24. > :48:40.hear me? It is like Istanbul. Yes, it is all like the European

:48:41. > :48:43.Championships from 1999. Woo Ha-ram is holding his head, because it is

:48:44. > :48:48.blowing about all over the place, as is the board. This is one of the

:48:49. > :48:53.problems and one of the side-effects of having an outdoor facility. It

:48:54. > :48:56.looks good when the weather is good, and now the pool is back to its

:48:57. > :49:03.original blue colour as well. You may have noticed that it is not

:49:04. > :49:04.green any more. Aquamarine. I told you, there is loads of stuff flying

:49:05. > :49:24.about. Well, the conditions are affecting

:49:25. > :49:28.the diving here. Woo Ha-ram had to stand down and deal with the wind.

:49:29. > :49:35.And he makes a bit of a shamble of the exit of his dive. The take-off

:49:36. > :49:40.is OK. But he has been put off by the wind. He comes out too early,

:49:41. > :49:45.Lance Short. His backside is sticking out, and the judges will

:49:46. > :49:52.not give him extra marks for that. Helen Skelton has nicked my pen!

:49:53. > :50:02.Give it back, thank you. That will be in the Daily Mail tomorrow!

:50:03. > :50:19.Now to the first of the two Chinese. Cao Yuan was our fifth placed diver

:50:20. > :50:26.after Round 1. That is a fantastic effort. His coat is saying he got

:50:27. > :50:38.blown back on the board. He is way back from the end. What a talent

:50:39. > :50:41.this young man is. Most people would have been turning into a frog in a

:50:42. > :50:54.blender, but he manages to hold it together. No faltering from Cao

:50:55. > :50:57.Yuan. They are not enjoying this competition. They are all shaking

:50:58. > :51:09.their heads when they come off the board and go into the Jacuzzi. It is

:51:10. > :51:19.turning into a bit of a hodgepodge. You have got all

:51:20. > :51:22.sorts happening. Landing right over the end, overcompensating. He leans

:51:23. > :51:29.into the wind a bit too much and ends up landing very short of

:51:30. > :51:36.vertical. There is all sorts going on here, trying to nail down TVs and

:51:37. > :51:45.all sorts. One commentator has lost his papers, among other things. The

:51:46. > :51:48.pen I have now retrieved from Hal -- Helen Skelton just went flying as

:51:49. > :51:58.well. But we are coping manfully here. It is hard in the trenches,

:51:59. > :52:01.you know. Now, here is a man who hit his feet on the board in the opening

:52:02. > :52:11.dive, and that gave him an awful mark. So he is playing a massive

:52:12. > :52:16.amount of catch up already. We are seeing the defending Olympic

:52:17. > :52:21.champion in all sorts of bother. He had a very unfortunate start when he

:52:22. > :52:26.hit the board. And this is another botched dive. Doesn't get the

:52:27. > :52:38.take-off he needs, lands flat on his back. Will this be the shock of the

:52:39. > :52:46.preliminary rounds? Feet so close again. You would think he would have

:52:47. > :52:55.learned from the first time. He ain't going through. Unless everyone

:52:56. > :53:01.else falters as badly as that. He has four dives remaining, but he

:53:02. > :53:12.would have to step up. Onto the Irishman, formerly of England,

:53:13. > :53:17.Oliver Dingley. Low degree of difficulty compared to some of his

:53:18. > :53:22.fellow competitors. But if you have a low degree of difficulty in these

:53:23. > :53:29.windy conditions, that is perfect. You don't have to run the risk of

:53:30. > :53:34.being blown around by the wind and making those dives even more

:53:35. > :53:35.difficult. The Olympic champion diving before him was way off the

:53:36. > :54:08.pace. 74.40 four Oliver Dingley. Very

:54:09. > :54:21.good. Now the other Russian. That is good. One of his easier dives. It is

:54:22. > :54:25.staggering to say a 3.4 is one of his easier dives. It is one of the

:54:26. > :54:35.lowest degrees of difficulty. Still very complicated. He is having a

:54:36. > :54:47.much better competition than his counterpart. He is right up there,

:54:48. > :55:01.just behind Cao Yuan. The second of the Chinese is coming up now, the

:55:02. > :55:05.current leader from Round 1, Chao. He will wait as long as he can

:55:06. > :55:18.before he takes this dive. He is a very experienced diver. It is so

:55:19. > :55:24.tough. Like walking the plank at the moment, isn't it? Not many athletes

:55:25. > :55:27.will be used to these conditions. It is difficult to find venues around

:55:28. > :55:32.the world that you can train outdoors. You can't just snap your

:55:33. > :55:37.fingers and get a gale force wind. It is not gale force, but it is

:55:38. > :55:52.windy. Some people take it a bit seriously. Or literally.

:55:53. > :56:05.And he fluffs it completely. These conditions are making it tough work.

:56:06. > :56:13.Ciao, world champion, finds it too windy to go -- Chao. He leaves too

:56:14. > :56:19.late, and over he goes. It is rare that we see mistakes of that

:56:20. > :56:24.magnitude from this young man. So, everyone is faltering. The leader

:56:25. > :56:39.after Round 1 will not be the leader after Round 2. Goodness gracious.

:56:40. > :56:43.Now to Knight-Wisdom. The tallest diver in this event. I don't know if

:56:44. > :56:52.that has a more adverse effect on him than on others. You mentioned

:56:53. > :57:02.his height. It is very difficult to spin around when there is a lot of

:57:03. > :57:06.you in height. Yona Knight-Wisdom would look more at home on a

:57:07. > :57:08.basketball court with his height and stature, and he is rocking and

:57:09. > :57:31.rolling here in the Olympic pool. He's listed at six foot but I think

:57:32. > :57:41.he is taller. Now, the first of the Brits, Freddie Woodward. He had a

:57:42. > :57:47.good first dive. Yes, he can back it up. That is superb diving. He has a

:57:48. > :57:57.lower degree of difficulty again. This is 3.1. He has a good take-off,

:57:58. > :58:05.lands right on the end. Uber-consistent. Washing slightly

:58:06. > :58:19.over vertical as he goes in. The two very steady dives from Freddie.

:58:20. > :58:23.Steady Freddie. At the moment, he is slotting into third place as we move

:58:24. > :58:32.on to a man who had problems at London 2012. No problems yet for

:58:33. > :58:39.Stephan Feck. He was close to the diving board. There is enough wind

:58:40. > :58:43.not to blow a diver back onto a diving board, but there is enough to

:58:44. > :58:49.tip you off balance. So Stephan Feck was leaning back a bit on his

:58:50. > :58:57.take-off, then uses his shoulders to move that diver. He is OK! Wow. You

:58:58. > :59:02.did a bit of Carmen Miranda there for us. Dangerous. He is shaking his

:59:03. > :59:12.head. The judges are not impressed either. So he moves in behind

:59:13. > :59:20.Dingley and Woodward. Now Jack Laugher. Not the greatest of starts

:59:21. > :59:25.for him. He has some big dives to come, but he wants the wind to

:59:26. > :59:26.slightly die down before he goes for his reverse three and a half

:59:27. > :59:43.somersaults with Tucker. Nice work, Jack. Just let the dive

:59:44. > :59:48.overrotates. It was a good take-off. He attacks the dive. He's just a

:59:49. > :59:54.little close to the diving board. Which is back with a little too much

:59:55. > :59:59.washing over. That is a better second diver from Jack. Lots of

:00:00. > :00:03.other divers are faltering, so there is no cause for concern yet. He's

:00:04. > :00:14.very much in the mix and will continue to be over the next few

:00:33. > :00:36.on, help Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow they said they did mind

:00:37. > :00:42.if it was wet, but this wind is something to content with and we

:00:43. > :00:49.will see if Jack and Freddie can get into the next round later on. It is

:00:50. > :00:54.so windy! That is affecting the beach volleyball, we will see the

:00:55. > :01:00.Brazilian number one pair in action and they are taking on the

:01:01. > :01:06.Americans, Dalhausser and Luchino, Dalhausser won gold in 2008 so it

:01:07. > :01:11.could be titled the Brazilian from crowd will no doubt cheer for the

:01:12. > :01:13.whole nation. We watch of the -- will watch the quarterfinal with

:01:14. > :01:38.Charlie Broome. Here's the opening server from

:01:39. > :01:50.Dalhausser. Again, they go across court. Much to the delight of the

:01:51. > :02:03.crowd. They keep their nose in front.

:02:04. > :02:23.Nice work from Dalhausser. His first contribution to the match.

:02:24. > :02:48.Of rogue shot from Bruno. That makes it 3-2 Brazil.

:02:49. > :02:59.For a moment I thought the set was too close but Lucena comes up with

:03:00. > :03:02.the play. This is the fifth meeting between the players in the last 12

:03:03. > :03:19.months. The previous format have been split 2-2.

:03:20. > :03:27.Here comes the first side switch, the first meeting came in August

:03:28. > :03:34.last year at the Longbridge grand slam. Dalhausser and Bruno won it

:03:35. > :03:42.and then at the world tour finals they met twice, the US came up with

:03:43. > :03:45.the win. -- Brazil won the first time. At the gold-medal match the

:03:46. > :03:51.Brazilians came through in straight sets and last meeting in Hamburg in

:03:52. > :04:13.June it was won by the Americans in straight sets.

:04:14. > :04:22.And the Brazilian pair left in the draw -- the only Brazilian pair left

:04:23. > :04:31.in the draw. Against the only American pair left in the draw. Good

:04:32. > :04:42.work from Lucy now again does -- good work from Lucena once again.

:04:43. > :04:50.Defensive play has not clicked in for either side. That is straight as

:04:51. > :05:17.Lucena, who takes it on the chest. He just depends him pins him -- he

:05:18. > :05:22.just pins Lucena. Brazil are getting lucky with the next call because

:05:23. > :05:45.it's one the advantage in the rally there direction.

:05:46. > :05:52.A fantastic deck, can they finish it off? They can't. This seen out with

:05:53. > :06:05.his own deck and get top of the net and it rolls out. -- dig.

:06:06. > :06:27.Dalhausser climbing into that one and the second side switch comes at

:06:28. > :06:50.a 8-6 to Brazil. Crosscourt was the only way to go

:06:51. > :07:12.but it has been kept alive. Dalhausser. Schmidt puts it away.

:07:13. > :07:29.Good work from Dalhausser to keep it alive, but it was allowing Cerruti

:07:30. > :07:58.to pounce. Good blocking. It is the Brazilian defence that clicks first.

:07:59. > :08:11.Set to close to the net. Cerruti cannot take advantage of it. Teams

:08:12. > :08:18.are able to challenge a decision if they don't like the call from the

:08:19. > :08:23.officials, but not taken on that occasion. Bruno perhaps suggesting

:08:24. > :08:32.the net had been touched by the opponent. Good serve. First ace of

:08:33. > :09:06.the match. Beautiful shot from Bruno. It means

:09:07. > :09:18.Brazil will have the lead at the technical time-out in two points,

:09:19. > :09:28.told the points currently 19. Nice disguise from Lucena. Shaped to go

:09:29. > :09:36.down the line and Bruno Webster is left and Lucena cut it back across

:09:37. > :09:41.the court. -- Bruno went to his. It is another ace and they make it a

:09:42. > :09:51.1-point game with a technical time-out. They had some success when

:09:52. > :09:57.serving at the Brazilian number one. He just gets it all wrong. It is as

:09:58. > :10:12.tight as it could be in a technical time-out. The Brazil team lead by

:10:13. > :10:21.one point four. The American pair first played together on the EBP.

:10:22. > :10:27.Let's look at the previous results. The surprise loss of the Austrian

:10:28. > :10:33.pair in their second match. Runners-up in their pool. The

:10:34. > :10:41.Americans had an incredible match against the Italian pair in their

:10:42. > :10:43.last pool C match. The third set, remembered his first 15 or two clear

:10:44. > :11:11.points, it went 24-22. Just saying the American pair first

:11:12. > :11:26.played together on AVP in 2003. They played together for a couple of

:11:27. > :11:28.years. Put it away nicely. Great serve down the middle. No

:11:29. > :11:42.communication. The American pair teamed up one year

:11:43. > :11:45.ago and while they've been in very good form since August last year.

:11:46. > :12:04.Good blocking. That is a very good block from

:12:05. > :12:21.Cerruti. The American pair won three of their first four events together.

:12:22. > :12:34.In long beach, Paul and -- Poland. Our time-out has been called. Brazil

:12:35. > :12:38.lead by four. It was just the two left side once, the other one was

:12:39. > :12:42.all right. I thought that was like a 70 feet off. No, I'm just talking

:12:43. > :12:56.about this one, one time. A lovely painting. The weather has

:12:57. > :13:03.completely changed since this morning. It is still very humid.

:13:04. > :13:37.Here we go. Schmidt serving 14-10. Great dig. And he goes crosscourt.

:13:38. > :13:48.To make it a 5-point game. Look at that, full-length to his left. And

:13:49. > :13:52.then comes up with the winner. In their previous match it was all

:13:53. > :14:11.about the routine, he was the matchwinner. -- Alison Cerutti.

:14:12. > :14:26.Bruno has played his part in this first set.

:14:27. > :14:43.Another superb effort for Bruno Oskar Schmidt but it doesn't come

:14:44. > :14:51.off. Since last year the Americans are second in their first tournament

:14:52. > :14:52.in long beach and second in a Sochi open on five occasions they have

:14:53. > :15:20.one. hospital in the The American pair

:15:21. > :15:25.are getting it back, back within three.

:15:26. > :15:41.That was just on the line. The Brazilian pair with an equally

:15:42. > :15:57.impressive record. Just on the line. Four second places, won finish. They

:15:58. > :16:20.go deep into competitions. Good play from Lucena.

:16:21. > :16:48.Brazil have got the decision and I think there would've been a

:16:49. > :16:52.challenge if they had got it. You can see Lucena touching the net with

:16:53. > :17:02.his rate hand. He touches it with his face on the way down as well.

:17:03. > :17:17.It is still alive. Alison at the net. Brings up six set points.

:17:18. > :17:23.Good work from Dalhausser to keep it alive and then tried to find the

:17:24. > :17:35.spike, treat -- straight into Alison.

:17:36. > :17:44.Six set points, the first on the serve. Lucena is there again.

:17:45. > :17:48.Monster block. Monster block from Alison and the first set goes the

:17:49. > :18:00.way of the Brazilian number one seeds. 21-14.

:18:01. > :18:13.Alison with four blocks in that first set and become at a crucial

:18:14. > :18:56.time. The first set 21-14 to Alison and Bruno Schmidt.

:18:57. > :19:07.Here is the view of Copacabana from the helicopter as this second set

:19:08. > :19:15.gets underway. The Americans are under the cosh having lost that

:19:16. > :19:18.opener. That was by seven points. They need to get the QuickStart in

:19:19. > :19:34.this second set. They are doing just that. Good block

:19:35. > :19:53.from Dalhausser. His first successful block of the match.

:19:54. > :19:59.Alison goes across court and Lucena judges it well and gets out of the

:20:00. > :20:17.way. The lob shot is out. Ideal start for

:20:18. > :20:22.the American beer. And at the Brazilians have had enough, they are

:20:23. > :20:32.taking an early time-out to take the Americans sales.

:20:33. > :20:40.Dalhausser and Lucena will be delighted with how this has started

:20:41. > :20:50.for them. That is the first set in statistics. It was very even until

:20:51. > :20:55.6-5 for Brazil. Technical time-out at 11-10 for Brazil. After the

:20:56. > :21:19.technical time-out, the Brazilian pair going on a couple of runs.

:21:20. > :21:25.15-10. And then 17-14. Until 21-14. It is Lucena serving from the

:21:26. > :21:35.right-hand side. Good dig from Lucena. Can he finish it off?

:21:36. > :21:49.Straight at Bruno. Fantastic from Dalhausser. Some great defence from

:21:50. > :21:54.both sides. In the end, it was the American pair that take the point

:21:55. > :22:07.with the little lob shot over the block.

:22:08. > :22:12.Alison with the delicate touch. He gets his team on the board in this

:22:13. > :22:28.second set. It has touched off Alison. 6-1 to

:22:29. > :22:56.the USA. Just on the line, wasn't it?

:22:57. > :23:32.Catching the outside of it. Alison with a fantastic serve. The

:23:33. > :23:39.Americans dealt with it. Lucena could not put the spike away. Good

:23:40. > :23:52.work from Dalhausser. Lovely spike down the line. Making

:23:53. > :24:40.it 7-3. Heavy touch from Lucena. The

:24:41. > :25:04.Brazilian pair are back with two. Bruno Schmidt will be serving.

:25:05. > :25:29.We are still hanging onto this early advantage, the Americans.

:25:30. > :25:40.That was one that Dalhausser knew he had a chance to block. Alison could

:25:41. > :25:50.only go crosscourt. When he made the block he could not control it.

:25:51. > :26:42.No mistake that I'm on the crosscourt spike.

:26:43. > :26:51.Four more points until the technical time-out. Good disguise from Lucena.

:26:52. > :27:18.Good angle across court. The wind is playing some havoc with

:27:19. > :27:31.the line. The server is white. From Dalhausser.

:27:32. > :27:46.Good shot that means that the American pair will have the

:27:47. > :27:50.advantage at the technical time-out. Can they be establish the five-point

:27:51. > :27:56.lead that they had early on in this set. One couple of points to play

:27:57. > :28:17.for before the time-out. That was long. From Alison.

:28:18. > :28:30.It is going to be a three-point lead because Alison finds the spike. The

:28:31. > :28:32.peers would return to their benches. The technical time-out is a chance

:28:33. > :28:47.to assess how the match going. The world champions come to be

:28:48. > :28:53.taking the first set. Just been made to work in this second set. These

:28:54. > :29:02.are blocks from the first set from Alison. Four of them. He has not

:29:03. > :29:34.found the defensive game in this second set just yet.

:29:35. > :29:44.The wind is starting to pick up once again. They are doing a good job,

:29:45. > :29:53.the American beer, they are keeping the crowd quiet. Once the code gets

:29:54. > :30:00.going at the Coliseum on the Copacabana, it plays a huge part for

:30:01. > :30:25.the Brazilian athlete. It is an incredible atmosphere.

:30:26. > :30:37.Fantastic work from first Bruno and then Alison.

:30:38. > :30:47.That is what their kids will love. -- they are capable of. Chasing down

:30:48. > :30:57.the lost cause just to keep the ball alive, almost in the bench and then

:30:58. > :31:02.comes up and you can see, Lucena Leaning right back, cannot control

:31:03. > :31:06.the Spike. Having said the American pair were doing well at keeping the

:31:07. > :31:29.crowd diet, it is the sort of points that keeps them going. Service

:31:30. > :31:40.fault. Great block. Second blog of the match, Dalhausser but he had the

:31:41. > :31:45.crosscourt, gets a left onto it. The start they had to this set will

:31:46. > :31:55.stand them in good stead. They still have four points.

:31:56. > :32:21.Lucena desperately trying to prevent his team-mate playing the ball.

:32:22. > :33:18.The crowd trying to get on Dalhausser, he comes up with the

:33:19. > :33:36.service to move the scoreboard on. This is the biggest need they've had

:33:37. > :33:40.so far, they are in total control of this second set. It looks like we

:33:41. > :33:58.will go to three. Lucena find the line as the American

:33:59. > :34:07.fans and team are enjoying that point, great dig from Lucena. This

:34:08. > :34:22.time he controls the adrenaline to find the back of the court.

:34:23. > :34:37.Straight at Lucena but cannot control the dig, it is wide. Eight

:34:38. > :34:41.set points for the USA. We will go to three sets in this first men's

:34:42. > :34:55.quarterfinal of the beach volleyball event.

:34:56. > :35:17.Just on the line. Dalhausser is having a look. You can see from the

:35:18. > :35:19.replay. It will be a challenge. A challenge by the USA to see if that

:35:20. > :35:44.ball was in. It was very close. That looks wide. I'm sure this angle

:35:45. > :36:01.will help us. It's definitely looks wide. The challenge was successful.

:36:02. > :36:05.And they have levelled this one up. 21-12. What turnaround in this

:36:06. > :36:09.match, having been totally outplayed in the first set they have raced

:36:10. > :36:18.through this second set to level it up. We have a touring costs -- coin

:36:19. > :37:16.toss. To see who will receive. Here is the second set in numbers.

:37:17. > :37:21.You can see the errors on the Brazilian pair, who get this third

:37:22. > :37:25.set underway and they start with an ace.

:37:26. > :37:38.In terms of sets between these two, Alison and Oskar Schmidt won the

:37:39. > :37:50.first one in long beach in August last year and the other true one a

:37:51. > :38:02.month later at the FI BP world tour finals. You don't want your

:38:03. > :38:09.opponents to get off to a flyer. Sites which every five points now in

:38:10. > :38:29.the third set. Good block. No technical time-out.

:38:30. > :38:39.Alison totally pumped for this third set. They just need to get the

:38:40. > :38:47.scoreboard ticking. There might be a time-out with a loose a lot of

:38:48. > :39:01.points. -- if they lose a lot. There is a challenge coming.

:39:02. > :39:09.The challenge is for the line call. Surely that was out. It looks very

:39:10. > :39:31.out from here. Lucena came across to try and double

:39:32. > :39:39.up down the line. There is too much on the Spike from Alison.

:39:40. > :40:13.Welcomer Bruno Oskar Schmidt has no right to get this first one back

:40:14. > :40:24.when he is miles out of court. That is the last point. It is the third

:40:25. > :40:28.touch to get it over the net and he is off the bottom of our screen. It

:40:29. > :40:50.was a phenomenal piece of skill. Again, he improvises because he is

:40:51. > :40:55.reaching for that ball, it is behind him. Somehow Bruno Oskar Schmidt

:40:56. > :40:57.controls it, look, he has to adjust and reach, he cannot put his full

:40:58. > :41:09.force behind the shot. Lucena needed to make sure of that

:41:10. > :42:13.because his team-mate was on his He finds the line. Nick Lucena with

:42:14. > :42:15.a wonderful piece of play. That is some angle he finds going on outside

:42:16. > :42:45.of the line. Dalhausser finds the Spike, I think

:42:46. > :42:54.it will be another challenge. No. No challenge by the looks of things.

:42:55. > :42:58.Back to another points now, the original set that went too close to

:42:59. > :43:10.the net allowed the Americans to get the upper hand.

:43:11. > :43:50.From Bruno and Lucena cannot keep it alive.

:43:51. > :43:59.Lucena cannot find there quiet touch -- the required. Lucena trying to be

:44:00. > :44:42.too cute. There they go again. No way! My

:44:43. > :44:52.word, what point! You just wonder if that is the point that will see

:44:53. > :44:56.Brazil over the line. That is a phenomenal dig from Bruno Oskar

:44:57. > :45:03.Schmidt. Alison does not give up on a lost cause, Bruno is at it again,

:45:04. > :45:12.and Alison sends the crowd here into delirium. Time-out called by the

:45:13. > :45:34.USA. They trail by four. That is the draw but the view is far

:45:35. > :45:42.more spectacular. We look towards Sugarloaf Mountain.

:45:43. > :45:47.It is party time on the Copacabana. The crowd are right into this one

:45:48. > :46:07.now. Heavy touch makes it a five point

:46:08. > :46:29.came in the race to 15 and it is definitely advantage Brazil now.

:46:30. > :46:50.Lucena finds the spike. They need a run of points do the USA.

:46:51. > :46:59.Alison is totally fired up for this one. He has absolutely launched

:47:00. > :47:14.himself into this crosscourt spike. It was overplayed by Lucena and

:47:15. > :47:21.Alison pounces to make it a six-point game. That could be the

:47:22. > :47:36.wind. You can see how heavy the wind as with the flags.

:47:37. > :47:50.The difference in this match has been the sets. The American pair

:47:51. > :48:11.raced out into a five-point lead in the second set. This third set in

:48:12. > :48:12.the race to 15, it becomes harder. Dalhausser get it at the second

:48:13. > :48:49.attempt. It is long. Two points away for a

:48:50. > :49:03.place in the semifinal. The Americans are up against it now.

:49:04. > :49:08.Alison hangs from an eternity to make the block and it is six match

:49:09. > :49:13.points. The American game has not collect in this third set.

:49:14. > :49:25.Dalhausser has to go backwards to make the shot.

:49:26. > :49:43.Just on the line. Just on the line. It is a second match point.

:49:44. > :49:49.Alison was enquiring with the referee. This is the second match

:49:50. > :50:04.point. And Brazil are through to the

:50:05. > :50:15.semifinals. 2-1 victory over the United States of America. Dalhausser

:50:16. > :50:19.and Lucena, the number three seeds are

:50:20. > :50:33.out. Alison and Bruno Schmidt walk-through.

:50:34. > :50:39.Lucena and Dalhausser wishing the Brazilians luck for the rest of the

:50:40. > :50:46.tournament. It is not to be for the Americans here in Rio in the men's

:50:47. > :50:51.competition. The number one seeds survive that second set falter to

:50:52. > :50:56.proceed in truth fairly comfortably in that third set. Some memorable

:50:57. > :51:01.rallies as there always are in Beach Volleyball Arena. The majority of

:51:02. > :51:07.them going the way of the Brazilians. They both face a Dutch

:51:08. > :51:27.payer in the semifinal. The winning payer will sign a

:51:28. > :51:34.volleyball and they have been giving them to children in the crowd.

:51:35. > :51:38.Alison taking the applause of the Brazilian fans here in the Colosimo

:51:39. > :51:54.on the Copacabana. ODE: You can almost hear the result

:51:55. > :51:57.in celebrating from where we're at the Copacabana. It is time to bring

:54:07. > :54:12.wind has picked up. It does not look as windy as it was a few minutes

:54:13. > :54:17.ago. What that wind does mean is that it has affected the ceiling.

:54:18. > :54:29.Unfortunately, the ceiling has been called off. There was no wind

:54:30. > :54:34.earlier on. We were hoping to bring you some action from the ceiling.

:54:35. > :54:44.Because of the conditions, all this action was brought to a standstill.

:54:45. > :54:47.Those medal races that were planned have been cancelled. We will bring

:54:48. > :54:55.you news when they will be scheduled again. Badminton for us now. Action

:54:56. > :55:03.in the Men's Doubles. We have class Langridge and Marcus LH -- Chris

:55:04. > :55:07.Langridge and Marcus Ellis. Taking on opponents from Japan. The first

:55:08. > :55:18.game went to the Brits. We will join at the start of the second.

:55:19. > :55:51.He got it done in there Endo and Hayakawa do defend splendidly but

:55:52. > :56:06.Chris Langridge was persistent. In the background is the two

:56:07. > :56:12.Russians that one at the all England tournament earlier in the year.

:56:13. > :56:25.Surprise winners of that one. Nobody saw that coming.

:56:26. > :56:37.It is a very hot day outside and the sweat is pouring off the players. It

:56:38. > :56:47.is a 10,000 seater pavilion. It is very warm inside.

:56:48. > :56:56.There is a real turnaround now. It is like they have found their rhythm

:56:57. > :57:02.against the Japanese and are up to that temple now. Fully alerted to

:57:03. > :57:20.their patterns of play. It seems as if they are looking a

:57:21. > :57:23.little bit forlorn at the moment after dropping that opening game

:57:24. > :57:29.after that seemed they had nailed it on as a win. There is an air of

:57:30. > :57:43.despondency about the blue team. I am sure they will be back. Can the

:57:44. > :57:44.Brits keep striking? Ever after rarer from Endo and Hayakawa. --

:57:45. > :57:56.ever after error. Four success of points. They

:57:57. > :58:14.finished off the first game in style as well.

:58:15. > :58:21.They have got a long way to come back now. It is a start.

:58:22. > :58:31.Psychologically that was really good from the Japanese. It was a shout,

:58:32. > :58:37.trying to kick-start their campaign. They had been muffled by these two.

:58:38. > :58:39.It is the first Olympics of Endo and Hayakawa since they have achieved so

:58:40. > :59:14.much. Again, terrific communication and

:59:15. > :59:18.once more it is Ellis that fires it down. Brilliant play, absolutely

:59:19. > :59:30.brilliant. On the front foot throughout and did not let up.

:59:31. > :59:47.The four point game, how good are they at front running?

:59:48. > :59:53.They have got to keep it going. There is only one player in it at

:59:54. > :00:01.the moment. The Brits are racing away with this. Muscling their way

:00:02. > :00:04.through nicely, spreading the play, keeping the Japanese guessing. They

:00:05. > :00:09.can get the rhythm against this British player right now. They are

:00:10. > :00:40.in a rich vein of form. The Japanese patiently weathering

:00:41. > :01:01.the storm, the newer their window of opportunity would arrive.

:01:02. > :01:08.Now it is the Japanese struggling on serve, they've not got a point in

:01:09. > :01:11.the second game on serve. Only one a couple against them. Robertson and

:01:12. > :01:50.Hoy must be delighted. It is a matter of such magnitude,

:01:51. > :01:52.and they've been in the quarterfinals of the World

:01:53. > :01:57.Championships before, but no further. An enormous moment here,

:01:58. > :02:16.can they somehow get across the finish line the right side?

:02:17. > :02:43.Langridge quick to get across, was key to quick? -- was key to quick.

:02:44. > :02:55.They were always on top in the rally and in the end the power of with

:02:56. > :03:02.this brings it home. They are mixing the lines of attack really nicely

:03:03. > :03:06.into changing the directions. -- and just changing. Still, the four point

:03:07. > :03:37.cushion. An apology from LS. It is a game of

:03:38. > :03:38.milliseconds and millimetres. So little between victory and defeat.

:03:39. > :04:14.The margin is so minimal. The leader back to four, the

:04:15. > :04:17.Japanese just cannot make inroads. It is rather like the reverse role

:04:18. > :04:28.in the opening game with the British play catch up but now Endo still up

:04:29. > :04:32.against it. You can feel them keeping the menacing presence in the

:04:33. > :04:36.game, highly decorated having been ranked to in the world a couple of

:04:37. > :05:06.years ago in June. They are ever dangerous.

:05:07. > :05:10.More and more spectators are being drawn to this court because they

:05:11. > :06:33.sensed an upset. What are rally. Earlier on, and real

:06:34. > :06:37.defence from Rendell and Hayakawa and they get their reward. And a

:06:38. > :06:44.smile from higher calibre, he knew this was a pivotal time, probably

:06:45. > :06:51.the longest rally of the match and Ellis Shang kings last shot. That it

:06:52. > :06:59.was the longest rally, 73 shots. In under one minutes.

:07:00. > :07:26.Ellis is in so quickly. He has been a real powerhouse. This is always

:07:27. > :07:32.what we see, Chris is very tidy with the tight-knit shots and excellent

:07:33. > :07:35.and Ellis comes in and believes the point and it is the contrast in the

:07:36. > :07:42.way that they play that is the reason why they Juhl so well, they

:07:43. > :07:45.have fantastic communication and you can see Langridge shouting, come on

:07:46. > :07:51.Marcus and forcing him on, to reflect. They were in a really

:07:52. > :07:58.difficult group, they did so well to get out of it, Langridge and Ellis,

:07:59. > :08:03.the key win against the number C three -- number three seed, the

:08:04. > :08:09.Koreans. Now here they are against number two in the world. And their

:08:10. > :08:18.front runners and holding on really well. Five point cushion at the

:08:19. > :08:23.mid-game break. That that group, is a great chronic and Fach and took

:08:24. > :08:24.the game for ball and Morgenstern, saw a really strong showing in that

:08:25. > :08:49.group. They have achieved so much in their

:08:50. > :08:55.two years together, these two. Back support tightened up, this would be

:08:56. > :08:56.out of all recognition if they could get through to the semifinal of the

:08:57. > :09:47.Olympic Games. Again, miraculous defence but Ellis

:09:48. > :09:54.will not be denied. He is taking over this match. Bullying his way

:09:55. > :09:57.through every point is so gripping, I cannot take my eyes off the

:09:58. > :10:20.screen, it is such a compelling watch.

:10:21. > :10:29.Well he cannot make it every time, it just seems like he can.

:10:30. > :10:36.It is a lovely blend of soft and touch around the forecourt and

:10:37. > :11:00.bullying, menacing presence from the backcourt.

:11:01. > :11:35.Well left. It was a difficult shot control.

:11:36. > :11:43.They've been a little careless on serve. Yes, there is a disturbing

:11:44. > :11:45.sense of calm focus in the Japanese camp but they've missed by

:11:46. > :12:16.increments every now and then. So quick to see the" and just put it

:12:17. > :12:30.in their beautifully. The cross is sublime, look how quick he was ?2.

:12:31. > :12:40.Wonderful finish. -- he was to punce. The lead stretches to six.

:12:41. > :13:06.They are very nearly there. -- pounce.

:13:07. > :13:15.Good try from behind the back. It has been breathtaking badminton at

:13:16. > :13:24.its best. I think this last one was a bit of a shank, so Chris could not

:13:25. > :13:41.quite get a read on it. There had a double take at that one.

:13:42. > :13:59.They have spent more time on the grandest of stages twice, super

:14:00. > :14:24.series event, of course. There used to turning matches like this around.

:14:25. > :14:32.Hope springing again for the Japanese, just beginning to eat into

:14:33. > :14:47.the lead. From six points it is down to four.

:14:48. > :14:52.It is so wasteful. A clever idea, the execution not, just spilling

:14:53. > :15:10.over the backline. Just when they started to get things

:15:11. > :15:52.going, that happened. It is in, again, super rally. Kate

:15:53. > :16:04.-- great defence from Ellis and Chris Langridge.

:16:05. > :16:15.The lead is still four points. The court is drenched in sweat, 34

:16:16. > :16:18.degrees outside and it must be nearly that inside. It must feel

:16:19. > :16:23.that way for the players. They do not want to turn up the air

:16:24. > :16:30.conditioning in case it causes too much drift. They were concerned

:16:31. > :16:33.about this, they drift in the hall, before the badminton started but

:16:34. > :16:56.there has not been too many complaints.

:16:57. > :17:53.Still the lead narrows. Can they hang on?

:17:54. > :18:05.He just missed. Another superhuman effort from the Brits. It was on the

:18:06. > :18:10.racket. And they had to change the direction. He has had great results

:18:11. > :18:23.from that but just went wide of the doubles line. It is down to two now.

:18:24. > :18:36.Utterly focused, these two. Deep-seated belief. They had a

:18:37. > :18:42.dreadful start to this second game when they did seem to be all at sea.

:18:43. > :18:50.In the last couple of minutes, they look to be a different proposition.

:18:51. > :18:51.It is going to be mighty tough. For Ellis and Chris Langridge to hang

:18:52. > :19:54.on. This is the key point right now. It is all Endo and Hayakawa. They

:19:55. > :20:01.were 15-10 up and the lead has evaporated so quickly. They need to

:20:02. > :20:07.take the time and somehow regroup as it is two men on a mission in blue.

:20:08. > :20:18.How can they stop the momentum that is firmly with the Japanese now?

:20:19. > :20:27.Great choice and great execution from Chris Langridge. It was a

:20:28. > :20:28.straight net shot from the top draw from Chris Langridge. Wonderful

:20:29. > :20:43.hands. What it does for the Japanese when

:20:44. > :20:46.you play soft shots like that, they do not know where to base

:20:47. > :20:54.themselves, the poor short on the course. -- deep or short on the

:20:55. > :20:59.court. They have been bullied by the Chris Langridge smash. Can the run

:21:00. > :21:23.was something here and put together some points back-to-back?

:21:24. > :21:29.Super finish. The bulk of the work from Ellis but Chris Langridge with

:21:30. > :21:45.the finish. That came down on the right type of

:21:46. > :21:47.Hayakawa and in the end, Chris Langridge with the Finnish Andy Reid

:21:48. > :21:53.is back to two. They have put a stop to the

:21:54. > :22:51.momentum. He managed to get Chris Langridge

:22:52. > :22:54.away from the net and the Japanese are back on level. There was a loud

:22:55. > :23:00.cry from them on the penultimate point. At the sharp end of the game,

:23:01. > :23:26.they are acquitting themselves very well.

:23:27. > :23:33.They continued to West point. It may turn out to be crucial. We have seen

:23:34. > :24:23.some service faults from the Japanese team.

:24:24. > :24:33.Another monster rally. Chris Langridge again with the punishment.

:24:34. > :24:41.It was a blistering point from both teams. Incredible, spreading the

:24:42. > :24:54.court well. Chris Langridge sticking the knife in, closing the net down.

:24:55. > :24:55.Two points away. Can they hold their nerve and keep that kind of form

:24:56. > :25:03.going? One at a time, gestures Chris

:25:04. > :25:29.Langridge. That was expensive. Three points for

:25:30. > :25:30.the semifinal of the Olympic Games for Marcus Ellis and Chris

:25:31. > :26:37.Langridge. It is out. And the Brits are

:26:38. > :26:46.through. And they look so confident at the end. What a result.

:26:47. > :26:53.That was unbelievable from Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge. They will

:26:54. > :27:05.now play the Chinese pair in the next round, the semifinals. Fu got

:27:06. > :27:09.gold in London in 2012. The other already gone above the world ranking

:27:10. > :27:14.and they could go further. I should expand why I am late. Apologies to

:27:15. > :27:24.our loyal BBC four friends, I did not oversleep. I have been too

:27:25. > :27:31.British house today which is 20 minutes that way to interview two

:27:32. > :27:37.medal winners from the games, Justin Rose who talked about what event to

:27:38. > :27:45.win the golf Gold Medal and he also said, he had some text from Iraq or

:27:46. > :27:51.Roy. He said that the British Open he would not watch the golf. -- Rory

:27:52. > :27:55.McIlroy. He did watch the golf and sent He Kexin he did a fantastic

:27:56. > :28:00.job. And I also had a chat with Jessica Ennis-Hill about how Silver

:28:01. > :28:05.Medal in the heptathlon. We will bring you the interviews on the BBC.

:28:06. > :28:11.It was less windy there than it is here. The wind has picked up. It was

:28:12. > :28:18.here on the Copacabana that a beautiful Maria wondered into our

:28:19. > :28:22.lives. The hen party magic that has gone around the world. Somebody told

:28:23. > :28:26.me today it has been watched 11 million times which is ridiculous.

:28:27. > :28:32.She was a lovely lady and has invited us to the wedding which is

:28:33. > :28:36.taking place behind us. Such is the demand we will play you that

:28:37. > :28:41.interview with Maria once again. It should be good fun. We have got some

:28:42. > :28:44.sport to get to. Earlier on we saw the top seeds in the Beach

:28:45. > :28:49.Volleyball Arena from Purcell, Allison and Bruno Schmidt. We will

:28:50. > :28:56.bring you the next game. It is double Dutch for everybody. Should

:28:57. > :29:02.we do the headlines? Hold fire on the Beach Volleyball Arena to re

:29:03. > :29:11.will tell you about what is going on in the ten in Rio.

:29:12. > :29:17.Gold for Charlotte Dujardin in the individual dressage, herself and The

:29:18. > :29:29.leg yield did the business. There was a surprise bronze medal

:29:30. > :29:32.for Sophie Hitchon. Her last will and the competition and look at the

:29:33. > :29:44.delight on her face, she broke her own British record, simply poorer

:29:45. > :29:51.for it 54 metres. -- 70 4.54 metres. The athlete from North Korea won the

:29:52. > :29:57.men's vault in the gymnastics. That was a wonderful salute from the

:29:58. > :30:05.North Korean. And also on the women's beam, the USA athlete was

:30:06. > :30:09.the winner -- was the favourite body when I was from the Netherlands. She

:30:10. > :30:13.was the lady who took the gold medal.

:30:14. > :30:21.On BBC One right now is, some more track cycling. Mark Cavendish in the

:30:22. > :30:28.only, points race so the final event in the omnium, Cavendish was a good

:30:29. > :30:31.chance of a medal, and also he silver medal position just now and

:30:32. > :30:36.Laura Trott is going in the women's omnium but that doesn't finish today

:30:37. > :30:40.and you can continue to see her doing business with Mark Cavendish

:30:41. > :30:44.picking up two points in the next section of that points race. It is

:30:45. > :30:48.all very congregated if you haven't followed it before. It takes about

:30:49. > :30:53.20 minutes but if you go to BBC One you can see the continuation of

:30:54. > :30:56.points race and you can see Mark Cavendish has one Tom Eaves Jurjus

:30:57. > :31:00.of the Tour de France, not telling left disappointed not to be the team

:31:01. > :31:05.pursuit which is why he said he had come home early from the Tour de

:31:06. > :31:09.France but he could win his first Olympic medal. I went early on in

:31:10. > :31:20.each volleyball but now we're going to the volleyball, we will see the

:31:21. > :31:25.Netherlands take on the Netherlands. That's called the beach volleyball

:31:26. > :31:36.arena. That is down the other end of the beach. This is the Dutch taking

:31:37. > :31:51.on the Dutch. Charlie Broome is the man. First set went to Muirsen.

:31:52. > :32:21.Good dig from new middle -- Numedor. Sites which number three. -- side

:32:22. > :32:42.switch. Perhaps the difference between the

:32:43. > :32:46.players, Nummedor 16 attacks, seven successful and Brouwers 16 attacks

:32:47. > :33:27.and 12 successful. It is an ace, comes in from

:33:28. > :33:51.Brouwers. They are level at 5-5. Heavy touch. From Varenhorst.

:33:52. > :33:58.Good luck doesn't work from Nummerdor and again Nummerdor with

:33:59. > :34:06.another excellent date, but it cannot be a third. Meeuwsen puts the

:34:07. > :34:21.spike down the middle. Nummerdor is finally beaten.

:34:22. > :34:49.Good dig from Meeuwsen with the ball behind him.

:34:50. > :35:01.Varenhorst at 6-6 in the second set. Onto the antenna and that is

:35:02. > :35:07.Varenhorst's point? It will be a challenge. First the block and then

:35:08. > :35:23.the antenna is the call. That's have another look. No, think

:35:24. > :35:27.that is under the antenna first, isn't it? You cannot tell from that

:35:28. > :35:55.angle. Look. Maybe he is right. That angle

:35:56. > :36:09.allowing us the chance to see the touch, and it is a successful

:36:10. > :36:23.challenge. It is 7-6 to Meeuwsen. Although it will be Meeuwsen

:36:24. > :36:33.serving. Serves to Varenhorst, who draws the Evra. -- the error.

:36:34. > :36:42.Has just got to get the full touch behind it.

:36:43. > :36:50.Side switch, so Meeuwsen now serving left-to-right. In the blue cap,

:36:51. > :37:18.Brouwer in the White and blue cap. They have got lucky again. Meeuwsen

:37:19. > :37:36.of the net cord, they got the first set of heavy net cord. -- from a.

:37:37. > :38:02.A wild shot from Meeuwsen. And the lead by three now.

:38:03. > :38:20.A time-out called and Nummerdor and Varenhorst need to come up with an

:38:21. > :38:33.answer for these two. Some really interesting points.

:38:34. > :38:45.So, they come out on a 3-point lead, the first place together in 2008 in

:38:46. > :38:48.the Dutch masters in the Hague. It was another three years before the

:38:49. > :38:59.combined to compete as a recognised by the ship on the 2011 world tour.

:39:00. > :39:00.-- partnership. It is art work in progress for Meeuwsen, a slow burner

:39:01. > :39:24.for them. The number 13 seed is when they won

:39:25. > :39:31.the World Championship in 2013. You can see the wind. Taking the flag of

:39:32. > :39:34.the flagpole. World Championship, not the first major title for them

:39:35. > :39:37.but also their first World Championship medal -- not only the

:39:38. > :40:36.first major. dig from Meeuwsen. At the technical

:40:37. > :40:44.time-out Varenhorst and Nummerdor have dragged it up to a 1-point

:40:45. > :40:47.game. They thought they would give themselves a shot, they trailed by

:40:48. > :40:59.three in the first set, so close attendance this time around.

:41:00. > :41:18.These two have no Olympic Games experience, but they did win a

:41:19. > :41:23.bronze medal here, Meeuwsen, in a real mac event at the beginning of

:41:24. > :41:24.this year -- Brooke Rio event. Add a bronze medal in Victoria the week

:41:25. > :41:41.after. Darkness descends upon Rio in day

:41:42. > :42:01.ten. Varenhorst serving. Just too long.

:42:02. > :42:21.This time they don't get the net cord luck.

:42:22. > :42:26.The attempted block, they've realised -- re-established the two

:42:27. > :42:47.point lead. The crosscourt cut short from

:42:48. > :43:32.Nummerdor. And a four point lead at this stage.

:43:33. > :43:45.Not good news for Nummerdor and Varenhorst, they have work to do,

:43:46. > :43:48.having lost the first set. This time it is Varenhorst who comes up with

:43:49. > :43:55.the block. The ball sitting on the net cord before siding to --

:43:56. > :44:09.deciding to go. The side of Meeuwsen, there it drops.

:44:10. > :44:17.Varenhorst enjoying that one, now he has to serve.

:44:18. > :44:40.Nummerdor, brilliant. Everyone is out of position. Meeuwsen makes the

:44:41. > :44:49.block and it is 16-12 now. To the number two seeds, Alexander Brown

:44:50. > :44:55.and Robert Meeuwsen. They've got to start making inroads into this

:44:56. > :45:20.league, Varenhorst and Nummerdor. -- lead.

:45:21. > :45:29.The Dutch fans are enjoying themselves. I wonder if they care

:45:30. > :45:37.who wins. Lovely crosscourt from years. Nummerdor and Varenhorst are

:45:38. > :45:40.starting to stare down a barrel. They have that heartbreaking loss in

:45:41. > :45:50.the final of the World Championships in The Hague in 2015. Nummerdor and

:45:51. > :46:01.Varenhorst were desperate to have a chance to reverse that result. Not

:46:02. > :46:05.only to get one over for losing that World Championship final, but also

:46:06. > :46:08.losing on homes and, a chance for the Dutch team to beat the

:46:09. > :46:22.Brazilians on their home patch. But that is a long way off right now.

:46:23. > :46:30.Too close to the net, and as a result, the momentum of the points

:46:31. > :46:33.swings the other way. Instead of being within two points, they are

:46:34. > :46:59.four behind. Meeuwsen's enjoying himself. That

:47:00. > :47:08.was wide of the mark. They have to win points on the serve now,

:47:09. > :47:18.Nummerdor and Varenhorst. That doesn't help matters. Nummerdor, the

:47:19. > :47:58.most experienced of the pack, came up with that service error.

:47:59. > :48:06.Crosscourt from Brouwer. Nummerdor went the wrong way, and it is four

:48:07. > :48:25.match points. Just finds the line. There is going

:48:26. > :48:50.to be a challenge. Why not? The call was that it hit the line.

:48:51. > :49:12.It was very close. I think that hits the line.

:49:13. > :49:32.Nummerdor needed to find three points on his serve, and he couldn't

:49:33. > :49:37.find any. It's all over. It is Alexander Brouwer and Robert

:49:38. > :49:40.Meeuwsen, the number two seeds from the Netherlands, that get the better

:49:41. > :49:52.of their compatriots, Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst.

:49:53. > :49:57.So, the second seeds are through. We told you earlier about the top seeds

:49:58. > :50:01.from Brazil also making it through. That has ended perfectly on time for

:50:02. > :50:04.us on BBC Four because we take you to some live hockey. The Team GB

:50:05. > :50:09.women who were perfect in the pool phase, winning five out of five, are

:50:10. > :50:23.taking on Spain in the quarterfinal. First, let's hear from the Team GB

:50:24. > :50:23.captain, Kate Richardson-Walsh. I

:50:24. > :50:29.have been in the senior programme for 17 years. I have changed, the

:50:30. > :50:34.game has changed. In the lead up to Sydney, we were wearing men's polo

:50:35. > :50:36.shirts and massive baggy skirts. It was a real trial to get us all

:50:37. > :50:43.together because we weren't on a full-time programme then. Now, we

:50:44. > :50:48.are full-time. It is night and day, completely different, and to see the

:50:49. > :50:56.transition has been amazing. London 2012 broke a jaw, tears. Reminders

:50:57. > :51:00.of those experiences? When I look back to the London Olympics, it

:51:01. > :51:04.feels like I am watching a movie with someone else in it. It is the

:51:05. > :51:08.real. To fracture my jaw, that is the worst injury I have sustained,

:51:09. > :51:14.touch wood. To have done it in the first game of a home Olympics was

:51:15. > :51:19.the most important thing ever. I watched my team play Korea from a

:51:20. > :51:23.hospital bed. I had had my operation, and I was so calm and so

:51:24. > :51:28.proud, because all the work we had done was there on the pitch. As soon

:51:29. > :51:33.as I was told I was allowed to rejoin the team, we were going for

:51:34. > :51:38.this with our lives. It was an amazing two weeks. You are seen as

:51:39. > :51:43.money for the team. I am a mother hen. I just care, as we all do. We

:51:44. > :51:48.spend so much time with each other. You become so involved with each

:51:49. > :51:52.other's lives that you really care about the person on the pitch and

:51:53. > :51:55.off the pitch and what goes on around her life and their

:51:56. > :51:59.relationships. It is all part and parcel of caring for each other,

:52:00. > :52:05.which makes as tight as a group. Do you consider yourself an ambassador

:52:06. > :52:09.not just for Great Britain hockey, but hockey in general? Absolutely.

:52:10. > :52:15.We know the Olympics is a massive shop window and for hockey, it is a

:52:16. > :52:20.minority sport, so we have to take this opportunity. We are 31 women,

:52:21. > :52:25.all different ages, different backgrounds, different likes and

:52:26. > :52:29.dislikes. We have a range of role models to say, look, it doesn't

:52:30. > :52:34.matter if you're small or tour big or whatever, you can play hockey.

:52:35. > :52:39.That is what we represent. The fourth Olympics. Is it possible this

:52:40. > :52:44.might be the last one for you? Yes. I think it's time. I think people

:52:45. > :52:50.have had enough of me now! I just feel like it's come to a natural

:52:51. > :52:55.end. I am 36. My body still feels good and I love it, but there are

:52:56. > :52:59.challenges ahead for me, but not on the international stage. I am just

:53:00. > :53:06.taking one day at a time and just focusing on that. After that, what

:53:07. > :53:11.will be, will be. That is the insight from the captain. Let's show

:53:12. > :53:18.you the quarterfinal draw. Too much of them have already taken place. If

:53:19. > :53:21.Great Britain do beat Spain, they will face New Zealand in the

:53:22. > :53:27.semifinal. Let's get straight across to Team GB taking on Spain.

:53:28. > :53:31.Katherine Downes is there alongside Mel Clewlow. They face a Spanish

:53:32. > :53:35.side who just made it through into the knockout stages. That's right.

:53:36. > :53:41.If they could hand-pick their opponents, Spain would be who they

:53:42. > :53:44.would have chosen. But we are concerned about the conditions down

:53:45. > :53:47.here, because a vast swathe of hillside to my right on the other

:53:48. > :53:52.side of the road from the Olympic Hockey Centre is a light. We have a

:53:53. > :53:58.massive forest fire not far away. It seems to be blowing closer to the

:53:59. > :54:02.location here. There is an enormous cloud of black smoke billowing

:54:03. > :54:07.across the end of the pitch. I don't know if you can see it. It is a bit

:54:08. > :54:11.hazy in the far corner, and the pitch itself is scattered with black

:54:12. > :54:15.ash that is falling from the sky. Mel, we have seen really bad

:54:16. > :54:19.conditions when we arrived. You were concerned that the match should not

:54:20. > :54:24.go ahead, but it has improved. It is probably worse in the media centre.

:54:25. > :54:28.We spoke to Danny Carey on the way over, and he wasn't concerned. So

:54:29. > :54:32.I'm pleased that the game is going to happen. We will have to see if we

:54:33. > :54:38.can get it finished before the flames reached the Hockey Centre!

:54:39. > :54:41.Dan was saying Spain just managed to squeeze through the group to

:54:42. > :54:45.qualify, but Great Britain have been going great guns. They have had

:54:46. > :54:49.mixed season. Their form has been all over the place, but something

:54:50. > :54:54.has kicked for them at this Olympic Games. They have got it spot on. I

:54:55. > :54:58.covered them before and I came here concerned, but they have picked at

:54:59. > :55:02.the right time and I got five from five, looking like six from six

:55:03. > :55:06.tonight. But Spain have done their homework. They knew which games they

:55:07. > :55:10.were going to lose. They beat Germany in the pool stages, so they

:55:11. > :55:17.will not be a pushover. Let's get over to the game.

:55:18. > :55:22.DAN WALKER: we were here the anthems in a moment. Before we get to the

:55:23. > :55:25.game, let's show you how good Team GB have been in the build-up to

:55:26. > :55:38.tonight's quarterfinal. Here is what they have done so far, five wins

:55:39. > :55:42.from five. Over, backhand goal, an absolute beauty! Great Britain have

:55:43. > :55:49.got there Olympic hockey tournament off to the dream start. Bundle

:55:50. > :55:59.through into the goal by Alex Danson. That will be that. This

:56:00. > :56:07.tournament is starting to hot up. Great Britain have won it! They

:56:08. > :56:14.remain unbeaten in the Olympic tournament so far. Great Britain

:56:15. > :56:21.versus Japan, scored! Great Britain have notched another win. Whoever

:56:22. > :56:27.wins this will go into the quarterfinals. It is a goal for Alex

:56:28. > :56:30.Danson! Maximum points, five wins out of five. Great Britain are the

:56:31. > :56:40.top team in the Olympic tournament at the moment.

:56:41. > :57:23.And now the aunt of Spain. -- the anthem of Spain.

:57:24. > :58:17.Those are the anthems, let's get on with the match. This is a women's

:58:18. > :58:25.hockey quarterfinal, Team GB taking on Spain. Mel Clewlow is alongside

:58:26. > :58:27.Matt Chilton. COMMENTATOR: Good evening,

:58:28. > :58:32.everybody. Smoky atmosphere at Deodoro, with a raging forest fire

:58:33. > :58:36.less than a mile from the pitch tonight. Thankfully, the wind is

:58:37. > :58:42.helping us and keeping the atmosphere clear, but the officials

:58:43. > :58:49.are keeping a close eye on the fire, which is approaching the BMX Centre,

:58:50. > :58:56.I'm told. Great Britain are in white tonight. They will be attacking the

:58:57. > :59:02.goal to our left. Spain are in red, hence the change colours for the GB

:59:03. > :59:07.team. Great Britain are unbeaten so far in the tournament. Five matches

:59:08. > :59:14.played, five wins secured. Australia 2-1, India 3-0. They beat Argentina

:59:15. > :59:20.3-2, 2-0 against Japan. They were expecting more. And then United

:59:21. > :59:25.States went a goal up before Great Britain pegged them back to win 2-1.

:59:26. > :59:36.Now they find themselves in the quarterfinals of the Olympic hockey

:59:37. > :59:41.tournament, facing Spain. Decent crowd in tonight. We have yet to

:59:42. > :59:45.have a full house at Deodoro, but with Argentina playing later, there

:59:46. > :59:51.are plenty of enthusiastic supporters on either side of the

:59:52. > :00:01.field. Kelly Hudson is umpiring this one.

:00:02. > :00:07.She will be joined by another Australian umpire. Under

:00:08. > :00:08.quarterfinal is under
