:00:54. > :01:15.They've done it! They have done it! She has absolutely nailed it.
:01:16. > :01:22.Cruising to another gold medal. Great Britain are the Olympic
:01:23. > :01:37.champions! Gold! Mo Farah wins the gold!
:01:38. > :01:42.Hello and good afternoon, welcome to Rio. I think it is said to say we
:01:43. > :01:47.are into our rhythm here at the Olympics. This time next week it
:01:48. > :01:53.will all be over. But sensational Sunday will live long in the memory.
:01:54. > :01:56.What a huge variety of sports in which British athletes were
:01:57. > :02:05.successful. Max Whitlock, Justin Rose, Andy Murray, five gold medals,
:02:06. > :02:11.two to Max. I will speak to him live in a moment. We have Mark Cavendish
:02:12. > :02:15.going for gold in the velodrome and Great Britain's women in
:02:16. > :02:22.quarterfinal action in the hockey. Here are the headlines on day ten.
:02:23. > :02:26.Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro put on a sublime display to retain their
:02:27. > :02:30.individual dressage title. That is a third Olympic gold for the job done
:02:31. > :02:40.and she becomes the first British woman to six as the lead defend an
:02:41. > :02:44.individual title. There was a brilliant bronze for Sophie Hitchon,
:02:45. > :02:50.the first ever Olympic medal in the discipline of the hammer for a
:02:51. > :02:59.British woman. She broke her own record. British badminton players
:03:00. > :03:04.Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge reach the semifinals of the men's
:03:05. > :03:14.doubles. They upset the Japanese number eight today. A medal is now
:03:15. > :03:19.within their grasp. Laura Trott began the defence of her omni and
:03:20. > :03:25.title with a solid second in the opening scratch race. In the men's's
:03:26. > :03:30.competition Mark Cavendish is in bronze medal position with two
:03:31. > :03:35.events to come later today. Here is a rough idea of what we will be up
:03:36. > :03:39.to this evening. Coming up next I will be chatting to Max Whitlock and
:03:40. > :03:44.Louis Smith. And later on Sophie Hitchon will be joining me to
:03:45. > :03:48.reflect on her bronze in the hammer. . We will show you Simone Biles
:03:49. > :03:54.going for her fourth gold in the women's beam. And then we will have
:03:55. > :04:00.the omnium flying lap. Laura Trott is at the beginning of her omnium.
:04:01. > :04:01.Cavendish finishes off with the points race. That is absolutely
:04:02. > :04:10.crucial. Then there is the elimination race
:04:11. > :04:16.which is a brilliant TV event. Then we will be starting on BBC Four for
:04:17. > :04:24.the women's hockey but finishing it on BBC One.
:04:25. > :04:30.So, yesterday, this man here became the first British gymnast to become
:04:31. > :04:35.an Olympic champion. He did not just do it once, he did it twice. This is
:04:36. > :04:39.the story of the hard work Max Whitlock has put in over years and
:04:40. > :04:46.years to get to this point of double Olympic champion. Gymnastics is
:04:47. > :04:49.pretty much my life. You have got to have a lot of commitments,
:04:50. > :05:17.determination and time spent in the gym.
:05:18. > :05:26.You cross your heart and hoped his day life, you cross your heart and
:05:27. > :05:33.hope to stay alive. Great Britain's Max Whitlock in the
:05:34. > :05:35.first of two finals for him today, going for a medal. A steely look in
:05:36. > :05:55.his eyes. Beautifully performed. That is by
:05:56. > :06:01.far the best in the world. A big 2.5 twisting somersaults backwards, into
:06:02. > :06:07.a 1.5 twist. He is taking a breath. He knows he just needs to land this
:06:08. > :06:18.tumble. Come on, makes! Five be less landing. What a performance from Max
:06:19. > :06:26.Whitlock! White apres so Great Britain's Max Whitlock is the floor
:06:27. > :06:35.Olympic champion. Max Whitlock, 23 years old. His chance now on pommel
:06:36. > :06:49.horse. Up into the move, he has done well there. Max Whitlock has done
:06:50. > :06:54.everything he can! Max Whitlock is now a double Olympic champion. It is
:06:55. > :07:00.just remarkable what we are witnessing here. It is a special age
:07:01. > :07:07.within British gymnastics and there is your man of the moment.
:07:08. > :07:14.You wonder if Max Whitlock woke up this morning, looked at those two
:07:15. > :07:21.gold medals and thought, that cannot be true! What did you think?
:07:22. > :07:24.Absolutely that. Standing here with two gold medals feels absolutely
:07:25. > :07:29.unbelievable. How would you sum up the achievement and give hope that
:07:30. > :07:36.others can follow you? It is very hard to sum it up. We are looking to
:07:37. > :07:41.inspire a generation. I have heard from my gym club back home that they
:07:42. > :07:46.have loads of requests to come and join. Hopefully, it will spur some
:07:47. > :07:52.people on. How would you keep your composure to perform as you did on
:07:53. > :07:56.the floor, not make mistakes and then perform with confidence and set
:07:57. > :08:01.a mark the rest can beat. What it is, I'm doing what I love. I trained
:08:02. > :08:06.so hard, so many hours in the gym. On the day you have one minute to
:08:07. > :08:11.show that. I think, I have done all the hard work, I'm here to enjoy it
:08:12. > :08:17.and that is what I do. It has paid off. There was an awful lot of
:08:18. > :08:20.Brazilian support in the arena because you had two resilience
:08:21. > :08:26.alongside you on the podium but this was your big finish. I was nearly
:08:27. > :08:33.there on my routine. Floor is all about your landings. You get through
:08:34. > :08:37.it. To be honest, as I finished my routine, I was not bothered about
:08:38. > :08:41.the schools, I was not watching anyone's routine, I did not know
:08:42. > :08:47.where I was placed or anything. Scott looked at me and said, you are
:08:48. > :08:53.the Olympic champion. I could not believe it! It was an unbelievable
:08:54. > :08:56.surprise. Was the waiting the worst bit of it? In the all-around final
:08:57. > :09:02.the waiting was very hard but there I did not know what was going on. I
:09:03. > :09:09.had a chance to look and see the people coming through and the high
:09:10. > :09:13.schools. It is so hard to get all six apparatus right on one day. You
:09:14. > :09:17.are fastidious in the way you prepare for things but you could not
:09:18. > :09:22.factor in winning a gold medal between your floor routine and your
:09:23. > :09:27.pommel routine so how did you reset yourself? I had to stick to the
:09:28. > :09:33.plan. The plan was floor and then pommel horse. I had to nearly forget
:09:34. > :09:36.about the gold medal I had won floor which was crazy. I could celebrate
:09:37. > :09:42.after. I look forward to pommel horse. Getting into the back gym,
:09:43. > :09:47.warming up and making sure I was ready for one more round to go. With
:09:48. > :09:53.the team competition and this, how many routines have you done? 20! I
:09:54. > :09:57.feel very proud to do that. Especially, last year was a tough
:09:58. > :10:01.year with glandular fever so I had to be a lot more clever with my
:10:02. > :10:05.training. I had never had a day off before. For my all-round final I had
:10:06. > :10:20.a day off. It was about that quick split decision
:10:21. > :10:25.between me and my coach to make sure I took what I needed and it paid
:10:26. > :10:27.off. Did you know mid-routine this was good enough? You could sort of
:10:28. > :10:31.feel when the routine was going well. I knew I had to continue it
:10:32. > :10:34.and do the best I could to finish it off well. After that, you have done
:10:35. > :10:37.your job. We came out with one and two with Louis Smith as well. We
:10:38. > :10:41.will talk to him in a minute. There are a lot of people at home who want
:10:42. > :10:48.to ask questions. William is nine years old. What is your question for
:10:49. > :10:54.Max? How old were you when you first started gymnastics? I was seven
:10:55. > :11:00.years old, I have been doing it for 16 years. Who was it who spotted
:11:01. > :11:05.your potential? Very much it was my coach. The people who supported me
:11:06. > :11:10.the whole way, my family, my fiancee now, my coach and everyone. We are
:11:11. > :11:20.lottery funded which helps our support. The whole system has been
:11:21. > :11:26.for this. I feel so, so proud. I expect you will keep going. What
:11:27. > :11:35.about you, George? Do you want to be a gymnast? No Mac pro! It is very
:11:36. > :11:40.tough. A lot of things are being named in Max's on. This pub is
:11:41. > :11:45.called the pommel horse. Have you been asked to do the official
:11:46. > :11:51.opening? I have been in there. It was nice to see posters all around
:11:52. > :11:54.it. Especially being in my hometown, it is a privilege for me. We have
:11:55. > :11:59.six days here to enjoy Rio and afterwards, we can get back, enjoy
:12:00. > :12:04.it and celebrate. I know you will reset yourself pretty quick and get
:12:05. > :12:10.back there. And challenging for medals in Tokyo as well. Well done,
:12:11. > :12:14.sensational stuff. If watching Max, Louis and the rest of the team has
:12:15. > :12:19.persuaded you to take it up, there are lots of ways you can find your
:12:20. > :12:23.local club. Go to the BBC sport website, select the sport you want
:12:24. > :12:30.to try and you can find out where your nearest club is. Maybe you will
:12:31. > :12:34.be at the Olympics in Tokyo or four years after that? And the man
:12:35. > :12:40.alongside me has won medal at his third Olympic Games, having taken
:12:41. > :12:45.third in the pommel. I know you were disappointed not to win gold, but
:12:46. > :12:50.when you reflect on what you have done, are you content? I am more
:12:51. > :12:53.than content. It is my third Olympics, 27 years old. I think back
:12:54. > :13:00.to Beijing, it seems so long ago now. To be here and alongside Max on
:13:01. > :13:05.the podium, it meant so much. Did you have to change your mind midway
:13:06. > :13:12.and do something different? Gas, I was doing for -- I was going for the
:13:13. > :13:18.harder routine but my hand had a bit of a start on the handle. By the
:13:19. > :13:24.time I got to do the hard part, I thought, calm down, get through your
:13:25. > :13:29.easy routine, let's not take on any unnecessary risks. That is what they
:13:30. > :13:32.did. Looking back, I definitely made the right decision. There was more
:13:33. > :13:36.difficulty I could have put in and makes could have put in but you
:13:37. > :13:42.cannot argue with one and two on the podium. Max held his nerve and did
:13:43. > :13:45.the better routine. I am happy. Do you think a decision like that is a
:13:46. > :13:50.sign of your experience and something you would not have done
:13:51. > :13:54.eight years ago? Yes, I definitely would have gone for it regardless.
:13:55. > :14:02.With a bit of experience and knowledge under my belt, I
:14:03. > :14:05.definitely made the right decision. I am happy. I came here, I did the
:14:06. > :14:11.routine the way I wanted to do it, and I am happy. As I came through
:14:12. > :14:16.security this morning, Lewis is a massive Harry Potter fan, I said I
:14:17. > :14:25.am from London, and they said do you know Harry Potter as if he was a
:14:26. > :14:30.person! I was checking my Twitter and JK Rowling sent me a message. I
:14:31. > :14:36.have not replied yet because I did not know what to say. I think you
:14:37. > :14:42.can say you created some magic of your own or something equally corny!
:14:43. > :14:46.I like that! I am really interested in going to Tokyo. Now I am getting
:14:47. > :14:52.older I have to listen to my body but if it allows me to, I will
:14:53. > :14:57.definitely try to get to Tokyo. Absolutely brilliant, well done you,
:14:58. > :15:02.thank you for coming to talk to us. Ladies and gentlemen, Louis Smith
:15:03. > :15:07.and Max Whitlock! Everybody last night was so excited here in Brazil
:15:08. > :15:11.and around the world to see the greatest global star in sport
:15:12. > :15:15.because Usain Bolt was trying to do something no one had ever done
:15:16. > :15:24.before, try and win the 100 metres for the third Olympics in a row.
:15:25. > :15:35.Usain Bolt, he lives and breathes Olympic titles, gathering them up as
:15:36. > :15:41.if they were daisies in a field. This is his arena, this is his
:15:42. > :15:45.stage. He is attempting to become the first athlete to win three
:15:46. > :15:49.consecutive gold medals at the same event, competing at a level which
:15:50. > :15:54.nobody else has ever done before. Look at the impact it has here and
:15:55. > :15:57.look at the impact it has around the world. Getting ready to Rumble in
:15:58. > :16:12.Rio. The Olympic 100 metre final. Justin Gelling gets away well,
:16:13. > :16:20.leaving it at the moment and charging but Usain Bolt gets it! I
:16:21. > :16:25.magnificent seven! The odyssey continues! -- a magnificent seven!
:16:26. > :16:45.Listen to the noise in Rio de Janeiro! Listened to the adulation.
:16:46. > :16:50.Look at the love for this man. The triple triple is on! And that really
:16:51. > :16:59.did create lightning around the world. These the most searched track
:17:00. > :17:03.and field athletes since 2004. Usain Bolt is out in front on his own and
:17:04. > :17:05.last night the searches for Lightning Bolt pose increased by
:17:06. > :17:23.3300%. It wasn't just the 100 metres that
:17:24. > :17:29.caused a wave last night, the 400 metres as well, and if you haven't
:17:30. > :17:32.had a chance to see if here it is in Cobra, described by Andrew Cotter.
:17:33. > :17:42.COMMENTATOR: Our way they go. LaShawn Merritt will hunt them down
:17:43. > :17:54.and Kirani James with that loose limbed final... Wayde van Niekerk...
:17:55. > :18:00.LaShawn Merritt so close to Kirani James already. It's surely between
:18:01. > :18:09.these three. It's these three men, three abreast, Wayde van Niekerk,
:18:10. > :18:15.can he hold on? Three men and the gold medal waiting for one! Wayde
:18:16. > :18:24.van Niekerk takes it! And it is a new world record! 43.03,
:18:25. > :18:29.extraordinary inside the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro and
:18:30. > :18:31.Michael Johnson's record has gone, Olympic gold and the fastest 400
:18:32. > :18:41.metres of all time. STUDIO
:18:42. > :18:45.And that world record of Michael Johnson had stood for 17 years.
:18:46. > :18:51.South Africa's Wayde van Niekerk breaking it with a new time of
:18:52. > :18:56.43.03. This was Johnson's reaction. The worst part of it when you had a
:18:57. > :19:01.world record broken is everyone else's reaction and you're trying to
:19:02. > :19:06.make them calm down and convince them that everything is OK, I'm OK,
:19:07. > :19:09.I haven't lost anything and I haven't lost anyone. I've never
:19:10. > :19:13.walked up to anyone and introduced myself as the world record holder,
:19:14. > :19:17.so nothing changes in my life today. I think the difference from people
:19:18. > :19:22.who have never broken a world record and never held one to someone who
:19:23. > :19:26.has come perspective is different. As a world record holder, what's
:19:27. > :19:30.important about it and significant to you is having accomplished it,
:19:31. > :19:35.having worked for so many years trying to chase that record and
:19:36. > :19:37.break it, and all of the people who have helped and supported you in
:19:38. > :19:42.that ambition and then finally accomplishing it. That memory I will
:19:43. > :19:47.have forever and that doesn't change and that doesn't go away, you don't
:19:48. > :19:52.lose that once the record is broken. Brilliant words from Michael
:19:53. > :19:58.Johnson. This has been an Olympics of unexpected delight, allowing
:19:59. > :20:02.lesser-known sports to shine such as hammer. A discipline in which
:20:03. > :20:13.Britain has only ever won one medal, back in 1924. She broke her own
:20:14. > :20:16.British record with a throw of 79 -- 75 .54 metres and that was good
:20:17. > :20:24.enough for a bronze medal for Sophie Hitchon, wonderful news. That only
:20:25. > :20:27.happened this morning and Sophie is with me now in the Olympic Park.
:20:28. > :20:32.What a huge moment for you, well done. Thank you so much. I enjoy
:20:33. > :20:38.myself so much and it was and expect -- an amazing experience. You must
:20:39. > :20:42.have done. To do your very best, amazing when it works out with a
:20:43. > :20:49.medal as well. Yes, training has been going really well but to
:20:50. > :20:54.execute it is even more difficult. A medal and a PB, I couldn't be
:20:55. > :21:01.happier. You have your medal ceremony tonight? Yes, 10:30pm, I
:21:02. > :21:05.got a bit of time to prepare! As a child I know you were a ballet
:21:06. > :21:09.dancer, how did you make your way from that to hammer? I did ballet
:21:10. > :21:13.for a feud years when I was younger, never to an elite level but I think
:21:14. > :21:18.it definitely helps me do what I do now. I'm very thankful for that. You
:21:19. > :21:22.may not have seen these shots yet but we had a camera on you after you
:21:23. > :21:26.realised you'd got a bronze medal and this is your reaction! I think
:21:27. > :21:30.there was a little bit of a dance in a minute!
:21:31. > :21:35.CHUCKLES Have you actually managed to duck to
:21:36. > :21:39.anyone back home? Not really, I talked to my dad for about five
:21:40. > :21:44.seconds before he said there were a lot of media outside and he didn't
:21:45. > :21:50.really talk! My family are at home and that is my coach, very excited!
:21:51. > :21:56.Thank him so much for that. I love that! Yeah, I was over the moon and
:21:57. > :22:01.I can't thank my coach enough. There's been so many people involved
:22:02. > :22:03.in this medal and the National Lottery and all the players just
:22:04. > :22:10.having the support of that is amazing. Everyone back home, I can't
:22:11. > :22:13.thank everyone enough. Do you feel this is just the beginning of
:22:14. > :22:20.something huge for you? Are you gaining in confidence? Can you move
:22:21. > :22:26.on and go for more championships? Definitely, I want to go to Tokyo
:22:27. > :22:29.2020 and I've got London and the Championships next year. I can't
:22:30. > :22:34.wait for the time coming ahead and hopefully I can just increase my PB
:22:35. > :22:37.and see what happens. Do you feel that you are feeding off the success
:22:38. > :22:42.of the other British athletes? Is there any buoyant mood in the camp?
:22:43. > :22:46.Yes, everyone is really excited about everyone, everyone is doing so
:22:47. > :22:50.well. Like you said, everyone does feed off that and it's a great
:22:51. > :22:56.atmosphere in the village and the Team GB block. We're very excited.
:22:57. > :23:02.We hope there is a lot more to come. Maybe later in the week? Yes, we got
:23:03. > :23:07.Jade going in the distance -- in the discus and then three men in the
:23:08. > :23:22.hammer qualification so hopefully we can see that. You have inspired the
:23:23. > :23:27.headlines back home, it's Hammer Time etc. It so Eddie been hugely
:23:28. > :23:40.successful for the British team in the cycling, we've Mark Cavendish
:23:41. > :23:43.and Laura Trott in the omnium, and something that can often happen in
:23:44. > :23:48.the track and individual sprint races is a stand-off, where one
:23:49. > :23:52.rider or both riders actually get to a stationary position on the track,
:23:53. > :23:57.to make someone else make their move, so that is Becky in behind.
:23:58. > :23:59.This is what happened when they eventually got going.
:24:00. > :24:19.They take the bell this time. Becky James coming down nicely. Riding
:24:20. > :24:22.tactically well but look at the acceleration by James into the
:24:23. > :24:28.slipstream. Closing the gap quickly, coming off the time and Becky James
:24:29. > :24:34.just squeezing home. Certainly given a bit of a fright. She delivered a
:24:35. > :24:37.second surprise, the same as the rapid charge where she performed
:24:38. > :24:45.like her former self, not seen for some time, and Becky James clearly
:24:46. > :24:50.won the match but not quite as easy as the seething suggested it should
:24:51. > :24:53.be. Her opponent had certainly brought some good form to these
:24:54. > :24:57.Olympic Games but Becky James safely through to the quarterfinals. Katie
:24:58. > :25:19.Marchand on track next. We haven't seen one of these, have
:25:20. > :25:27.we, Marchant caught napping and look at the size of the gap she has to
:25:28. > :25:34.try and close! Katy Marchant fighting her way back, the gap is
:25:35. > :25:37.now closing and look at this ride from Katy Marchant, closing in on
:25:38. > :25:44.the German rider and overtaking her on the finishing straight! Katy
:25:45. > :25:48.Marchant was really tested there by an unexpected early spring from the
:25:49. > :25:51.German rider. She had to dig deep and sprint for a long way round but
:25:52. > :25:57.she had more than enough to cope with it. Just for a few seconds
:25:58. > :26:00.Marchant was thinking, pulling forwards and that element of
:26:01. > :26:06.surprise was all that she could use, but what a turn of speed in the end
:26:07. > :26:10.by Marchant. Double Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton is with me now,
:26:11. > :26:14.enjoying the Breeze! A real contrast in races, showing you what can
:26:15. > :26:18.actually go wrong, although they both won this morning to meet you
:26:19. > :26:21.can never be relaxed about it? You can never be complacent because it's
:26:22. > :26:25.one manoeuvre, you look over the wrong shoulder or slightly lose your
:26:26. > :26:28.line for one second and it could really turn the result over. Both
:26:29. > :26:35.their opponents this morning should have been quite straightforward
:26:36. > :26:40.matches, and I think you saw Miriam Welte from Germany go for a long
:26:41. > :26:44.ride to try and catch Katy Marchant down. In terms of the way they are
:26:45. > :26:48.both cycling and dealing with the difference in tactics, it's amazing
:26:49. > :26:51.when you watch this, you think Katy Marchant is never going to get
:26:52. > :26:55.there? As soon as she gets into the slipstream, as a cyclist you know
:26:56. > :27:00.that's it. This kind of ride happens once in a blue moon and you can't be
:27:01. > :27:04.caught out by it. A lot of people asked me why don't you go from them
:27:05. > :27:09.whistle, and it's like, three laps is a way to sprint. Because the
:27:10. > :27:13.programme is so spread out in the Olympics, they've got time to
:27:14. > :27:17.recover. Usually it's over one day and here it's over three. Do you
:27:18. > :27:20.think we will see Becky James and Katy Marchant against each other in
:27:21. > :27:24.the gold medal race eventually? I think it's quite likely we will see
:27:25. > :27:28.them in the semifinals and hopefully going head-to-head in the final.
:27:29. > :27:33.They were very strong. Those two almost upsets will have woken them
:27:34. > :27:36.up a bit. They can't afford to let that happen again. The person who
:27:37. > :27:40.makes the fewest mistakes wins the sprint competition. They're both
:27:41. > :27:46.looking good. I certainly expect them to be the top -- to be in the
:27:47. > :27:49.top four. Tonight is a test of the all-rounders because we have got the
:27:50. > :27:54.end of the omnium and the last events for Mark Cavendish and the
:27:55. > :27:56.beginning of the omnium for Laura Trott. Cavendish was involved in
:27:57. > :28:01.something of a controversial move last night in the elimination race
:28:02. > :28:07.when he went for and undertake. Yes, you're not allowed to go behind --
:28:08. > :28:10.below the black line on the track. The last person is eliminated from
:28:11. > :28:13.the group and it was all so close, he squeezed through eight app which
:28:14. > :28:17.wasn't quite big enough, which meant he came below the black line and
:28:18. > :28:21.they decided to lemonade him early. Those are the rules he was
:28:22. > :28:25.frustrated with that top white what do you think about Laura Trott, is
:28:26. > :28:36.she going well? The first event, the scratch race, she came second.
:28:37. > :28:42.Tatsiana Sharakova from Belarus took a really early attack. Laura Trott
:28:43. > :28:48.knew she didn't have to race -- chased her down because she's not
:28:49. > :28:51.one of her main opponents, and she came first in the bunch. A very
:28:52. > :28:56.settled, confident, easy ride and she's looking very good out there.
:28:57. > :29:02.Although Victoria Pendleton is here watching the cycling, she also has a
:29:03. > :29:10.keen eye on events elsewhere because she loves her horses! And today
:29:11. > :29:26.Charlotte Dujardin was trying to defend an Olympic title.
:29:27. > :29:37.COMMENTATOR: The great Valegro and Charlotte Dujardin, the reigning
:29:38. > :29:46.Olympic champions. Can they repeat their London triumph?
:29:47. > :29:59.Here is the real test now. A brand-new floor plan, prepared for
:30:00. > :30:06.this competition, prepared to try to retain that Olympic title.
:30:07. > :30:23.I had a tear in my eye in London when it all happened and I have
:30:24. > :30:30.another one now, Scotty. I don't think there's been a better dressage
:30:31. > :30:34.at an Olympic Games ever! Wherever you are, stand up for this girl.
:30:35. > :30:38.Charlotte Dujardin with the great Valegro has done it!
:30:39. > :30:43.And with that performance, specially choreographed with music that was
:30:44. > :30:53.suitable here for Brazil, they bow out of the Olympic Games. Charlotte
:30:54. > :30:56.will be joining me in the studio to give you an idea of where you may be
:30:57. > :31:01.able to see Valegro between now and the end of the year. Good news for
:31:02. > :31:06.the sailing with this breeze. Lots going on today commission early?
:31:07. > :31:10.Well, we were hopeful there was lots going on but I suppose the
:31:11. > :31:13.conditions have been amazing until now in the sailing, we have had
:31:14. > :31:18.breeze every day, so we were due one. It is quite glassy and there is
:31:19. > :31:21.not much going on. Inside the harbour there are two classes
:31:22. > :31:25.waiting for the medal race, the double point race that will decide
:31:26. > :31:29.who stands on the top of the podium. They are the single-handed men and
:31:30. > :31:32.the single-handed women. In the men, Nick Thompson has a great chance of
:31:33. > :31:35.a bronze. They been waiting all day and it's properly last see their and
:31:36. > :31:54.I suspect that won't happen. You can see behind me the
:31:55. > :31:58.skyscrapers of Copacabana. We have Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark. They
:31:59. > :32:02.are currently in Gold medal position. They were scheduled to
:32:03. > :32:07.have three races today before their medal race. I think they will be
:32:08. > :32:12.feeling pretty nervous. It is tough conditions like this. When there are
:32:13. > :32:18.only a few not wind, it can get quite ugly. It is potentially a bit
:32:19. > :32:22.going on but I think we have to be a bit more patient.
:32:23. > :32:27.I did understand why all the wind seems to be inland but not over the
:32:28. > :32:32.sea! Hoping it picks up for you, surely. Shelley has done a sit down
:32:33. > :32:36.interview with Giles Scott whose gold medal will be confirmed
:32:37. > :32:40.tomorrow and that will be on the website -- Shirley.
:32:41. > :32:46.When Shirley was last competing at an Olympics they were Gail Emms and
:32:47. > :32:49.Nathan Robertson. They won Ed Ling badminton and there are hopes of
:32:50. > :33:01.another because there was a surprise result in the men's doubles. This is
:33:02. > :33:06.Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge. They beat players who are ranked
:33:07. > :33:13.along way above them in the world. They have reached the semifinal of
:33:14. > :33:18.the men's doubles. That will be at 1:30pm British Summer Time. This is
:33:19. > :33:24.what Langridge had to say afterwards. It is unbelievable.
:33:25. > :33:28.Without sounding too cheesy, it shows if you put in hard work and
:33:29. > :33:32.graft away, we are not the most gifted and quickest but we work
:33:33. > :33:38.hard. The way we flowed together as a team, it shows when two people put
:33:39. > :33:43.their mind to something, I am not the best player but I work hard.
:33:44. > :33:48.This is insane, the semifinal of the Olympics. There is no reason why we
:33:49. > :33:52.cannot push the other guys out, I am well up for a medal.
:33:53. > :33:57.I love that message from Chris. It doesn't matter if you are not the
:33:58. > :34:06.best, if you work well together then things can happen. We are going to
:34:07. > :34:14.bring you some gymnastics now. The men's vault could be a battle
:34:15. > :34:21.between two men in their 30s. We have 31-year-old Ri Se-gwang.
:34:22. > :34:58.Commentary from Matt and the team. Huge disappointment on the floor
:34:59. > :35:03.here. What will the story be with his second vault? That was
:35:04. > :35:13.absolutely mesmerising. That is the best I have seen him do that. He had
:35:14. > :35:20.quite a few steps out before. The talk he gets to get the 3.5 twist
:35:21. > :35:31.round and just a small step. That is unbelievable. That is another first
:35:32. > :35:38.for today. It really has been a special Championships. We have had a
:35:39. > :35:43.real celebration, Chris. We have watched two vaulters push the
:35:44. > :35:48.boundaries, produced their own new elements. The way the code works
:35:49. > :35:55.these days, we have talked about the difficulty, building the difficulty
:35:56. > :36:01.score and trying to achieve the highest execution possible. The code
:36:02. > :36:07.book is open. This needs to be different this time. A superb 2.5
:36:08. > :36:20.twist from the half turn on. He is so clean. Not the highest of starts
:36:21. > :36:31.for the second vault. The average will still be big. This is his first
:36:32. > :36:39.Olympics. 19 years old. He has never medal on the vault at the World
:36:40. > :36:45.Championships. It was so clean. A small split as he came onto the
:36:46. > :36:50.horse. It was just out of picture but there was a slight split the
:36:51. > :36:58.judges will pick up. His legs were crossed in the air but dead central.
:36:59. > :37:04.He was spinning so fast the judges will not have seen that, Chris? No,
:37:05. > :37:11.they won't. That was very well performed. Really pleased to see him
:37:12. > :37:19.perform well. He was so disappointed with himself on the floor. Kenzo
:37:20. > :37:24.Shirai vaults into the lead. Four times world champion. This is his
:37:25. > :37:38.fourth Olympics now. And he will be doing his trademark vault. He got an
:37:39. > :37:46.Olympic medal in Athens 2004. He was second at the World Championships
:37:47. > :37:51.last year. Back from retirement. Fifth highest qualifier. When we
:37:52. > :37:58.first saw this, we thought it was absolutely unbelievable. It is still
:37:59. > :38:09.excellent, really good. He landed bolt upright. Very impressive
:38:10. > :38:13.vaulting. He's just practising his entry that he will have to do for
:38:14. > :38:21.the second vault because it has to be different. It is amazing the
:38:22. > :38:28.heights he gets. He manages to turn, kick out and spot the landing. The
:38:29. > :38:37.legs are hardly split apart. You will see a lot of gymnasts do that
:38:38. > :38:50.and their legs are really wide. He performs it the best. The height of
:38:51. > :38:58.the gymnasts can get off this platform is really quite amazing.
:38:59. > :39:04.The second-highest score we have seen so far.
:39:05. > :39:18.This one will be slightly harder than the last. He is being
:39:19. > :39:25.ambitious. Beautifully performed! That is the best series of vault I
:39:26. > :39:31.have ever seen him do. For a 6.2 difficulty, to put in that kind of
:39:32. > :39:36.execution, this is a gymnast who loves competition. He loves to feel
:39:37. > :39:44.the crowd and relax. With this vault you can quite easily miss and then
:39:45. > :39:50.coming off in a handspring. You get so much height and I knew he was
:39:51. > :40:00.going to make it round. Almost sticks the landing as well.
:40:01. > :40:16.Quite tidy as well. This will be a big challenge, I think. Can he get
:40:17. > :40:24.up into the medals? There are still four gymnasts to go. What does the
:40:25. > :40:28.future hold for Marian Dragulescu and his Olympic dreams? He is in
:40:29. > :40:47.second at the moment. Ri Se-gwang now. Keep your eyes open
:40:48. > :40:52.for this. A big pace back but a massive vault. The speed with which
:40:53. > :40:58.he rotates. He did the Dragulescu but in the pike position. A pipe
:40:59. > :41:12.position gets more difficulty than the tap. -- Tuck. Split and bent his
:41:13. > :41:24.legs slightly just before the turn. That is a 6.4 difficulty score. He
:41:25. > :41:30.has room for deductions. When you are coming from such a huge height
:41:31. > :41:34.with so much rotation, the landing and the forces going through the
:41:35. > :41:43.legs, no surprise they are having to take a step. Well, Ri Se-gwang has
:41:44. > :42:00.another 6.4 in the locker as far as difficulty is concerned.
:42:01. > :42:07.If he posts another difficulty score of 6.4 as we think he will, he will
:42:08. > :42:13.have an advantage as far as the difficulty is concerned. This is all
:42:14. > :42:20.about the execution. Can he vault himself into the lead? We have seen
:42:21. > :42:29.him a couple of times doing this and I think it is absolutely amazing.
:42:30. > :42:35.That was a great landing for the most complex of vaults you will ever
:42:36. > :42:41.see. He had hardly any time to spot that landing and somehow he managed.
:42:42. > :42:46.I thought he had stuck it for a minute. I think the landing shocked
:42:47. > :42:54.him as well. I think that will be enough to move him into first place.
:42:55. > :43:00.Lets just see the timing on this. He was up in the air and twisting and
:43:01. > :43:07.rotating so quickly. At the height he gets off the top of the vault. It
:43:08. > :43:10.allows him to perform it. If there is one more of them going to be in
:43:11. > :43:19.the final, I think it will come down to who lands it best. But that was
:43:20. > :43:24.amazing. The way he drops his shoulder in midair, you see that and
:43:25. > :43:29.there is the back somersault. And there is the floor very quickly! The
:43:30. > :43:36.ability to know where you are in the air to perform like that, 2.5
:43:37. > :43:44.somersaults with a full twist in the first somersault, just unbelievable
:43:45. > :43:53.awareness needed. He is in the lead. Denis Abliazin. If he hits this, it
:43:54. > :43:55.will be very, very impressive. This lad is the definition of power. Can
:43:56. > :44:09.he contain it? The full twist, back out. The second
:44:10. > :44:14.one of this competition, a step forwards which means it will
:44:15. > :44:21.slightly under rotated, but unbelievable vaulting from these
:44:22. > :44:25.guys. It was. It was the same vault that Ri Se-gwang performed. I did
:44:26. > :44:31.think it was quite as good. It comes down to the landing. There was a big
:44:32. > :44:43.step forwards so everything is now on the next vault. He is looking for
:44:44. > :44:44.a score over 15.449. That is after the second vault and both vaults are
:44:45. > :45:02.average. Quite a deep landing, his chest was
:45:03. > :45:17.low. I think the execution will be lower than Ri Se-gwang. 15.6. Down a
:45:18. > :45:25.tent on Ri Se-gwang's. Still an amazing vault though.
:45:26. > :45:47.is another huge star value, X point two. A big step. I'm so impressed
:45:48. > :45:50.with these gymnasts's vaulting. They are showing completely different
:45:51. > :46:03.vaults. A 6.2 difficulty, Ablyazin is not
:46:04. > :46:06.holding back. I think he's going to scrape into the medals. I don't
:46:07. > :46:12.think he's going to be first. The step back here on the landing. That
:46:13. > :46:19.will keep them away from first. It will be closed next phase close but
:46:20. > :46:29.I think he will probably just sneak in. He had a 6.0 and a 6.2. So he
:46:30. > :46:36.will probably just sneak in an difficulty. Can Marian Dragulescu
:46:37. > :46:55.hang on? Will then as -- will Denis Ablyazin... He gets
:46:56. > :46:59.the silver and Ri Se-gwang wins! Two times world champion and now Olympic
:47:00. > :47:05.champion. The 31-year-old from the people trip of the God
:47:06. > :47:20.-- the 31-year-old from the People's Republic of Korea. Marian Dragulescu
:47:21. > :47:30.will finish in fourth place. We're now going to head across live
:47:31. > :47:36.to the gymnastics, the women's beam is in progress and this includes the
:47:37. > :47:42.amazing Simone Biles, going for her fourth gold-medal. Here is Matt.
:47:43. > :47:51.COMMENTATOR: Thanks, Claire. Simone Biles will be fourth up. We have
:47:52. > :48:01.already had the first gymnast, Fam Yilin, getting through her go
:48:02. > :48:06.without a fault. The ultimate goal will be five golds for Simone Biles.
:48:07. > :48:11.The balance beam is decommissioned has to pick up that fourth one. We
:48:12. > :48:16.haven't seen any problems from her in the run-up to this beam final.
:48:17. > :48:20.Hopefully she can hold her nerve and she was a bit ahead of the other
:48:21. > :48:24.gymnasts, she's got such a huge difficulty on this piece of
:48:25. > :48:33.apparatus. It's a great piece of apparatus to watch. The Olympic
:48:34. > :48:38.champion back in 2004, she is now 28 years old and the remaining tab not
:48:39. > :48:44.made an impact that the Olympics. This was the first Olympics since
:48:45. > :48:46.1976 we did not see the Remainiac is up on the team podium. Very
:48:47. > :48:52.disappointing for them but they have had the opportunity to bring
:48:53. > :48:59.Catalina Ponor here and she's obviously hoping to bring a medal
:49:00. > :49:03.home. Eight gymnasts from qualification and it is now Isabela
:49:04. > :49:12.Onyshko from Canada. COMMENTATOR: The Canadians have had
:49:13. > :49:19.a bit of a mixed championship, very disappointed not to make the team
:49:20. > :49:23.final. But in the all-around competition there gymnasts have done
:49:24. > :49:32.well. Lovely opening series. Two backflips and they lay somersault.
:49:33. > :49:39.The change leg leapt into the free card wheel. On beam, gymnasts have
:49:40. > :49:43.to perform acrobatic skills Mike somersault and free walkovers, and
:49:44. > :49:50.spins and jumps as well. You can see the setup here for a big skill. Full
:49:51. > :49:56.twisting type back, and she just didn't get off her hands properly to
:49:57. > :49:57.do the backflip with powers so that you can stand right up and make a
:49:58. > :50:12.full twist. Nice, supple element. Good split in
:50:13. > :50:20.the jump. Free walkovers, immediately change the cast. Three
:50:21. > :50:32.elements linked. The spin with the leg held high. A little wobble
:50:33. > :50:36.their, already had a fall, so this routine, for execution, will be one
:50:37. > :50:48.marked lower than if she hadn't had the fall, and this is the dismount.
:50:49. > :50:54.Two flips! Nice high double turn. Disappointment for Onyshko on the
:50:55. > :50:58.beam. She did one series so well but the second one caused grief. You get
:50:59. > :51:04.one chance in a final and you have to go for it. Flicked straight back,
:51:05. > :51:12.just a small double. Beautiful extension on the change leg leapt
:51:13. > :51:18.into the cartwheel. The full twist, spotting that beam as she's coming
:51:19. > :51:24.in for it. She was off-line. You can see although both feet yacht on, the
:51:25. > :51:30.body weight wasn't over. A lot of nice features to this routine.
:51:31. > :51:38.Lovely nice split here, head right bank and a very efficient double
:51:39. > :51:42.tucked dismount, chest a bit low on landing, but that's a shame because
:51:43. > :51:48.that was a good routine. The second of eight gymnasts in this women's
:51:49. > :51:53.Olympic beam final. The next gymnasts up, who is just marking out
:51:54. > :52:06.the beam at the moment is Simone Biles. Chalking up the beam in
:52:07. > :52:13.certain positions just socially can judge the length of the tumbles. She
:52:14. > :52:16.can't look and see how far from the end of the beam she is, she needs it
:52:17. > :52:28.marked out very precisely. Sally Conway we get a difficulty
:52:29. > :52:34.score of the first mark is the amount of difficulty she is unable
:52:35. > :52:38.to perform in the second mark the execution. Usually up at say eight
:52:39. > :52:45.but with a fall it will no doubt be down in the sevens. The flick, full
:52:46. > :52:50.twist and her knees are off to the side and there was no room for error
:52:51. > :53:00.on the beam, it's only ten centimetres wide. Just a little bit
:53:01. > :53:07.bigger than a phone. Trying out your beam routine, Rob! Exactly! We are
:53:08. > :53:14.looking for scores around the mid-15 is, do you think? The top one or two
:53:15. > :53:30.will get 15s, but the first gymnast without a fall, 14.5. 14.54 Fan
:53:31. > :53:35.Yilin,, which, and she gets 13.4. Simone Biles, 19 years old, on this
:53:36. > :53:38.golden path to make history. Aiming for five Olympic gold medals, never
:53:39. > :53:52.been done before. A quick entry on the beam, straight
:53:53. > :53:56.into the two and a half split. Such control and such a difficult element
:53:57. > :54:03.to do. The two compulsory jumps that you need. Such a powerful gymnast.
:54:04. > :54:16.The front somersault with turn. Here comes the first of the big
:54:17. > :54:29.somersault series. The flick into the layout. Not a flicker! So
:54:30. > :54:33.confident. Oh! Front somersault. Well, that will definitely be a
:54:34. > :54:38.deduction. It can be as much as one hallmark. She just held back on that
:54:39. > :54:43.front somersault but did well to control it and they on the beam.
:54:44. > :54:50.Change leg into the change leg have come into the bike back. She has
:54:51. > :54:54.regained her composure. Such a difficult piece of apparatus. Once
:54:55. > :55:00.you've fallen ones, to get back up and be solid, but she's doing well.
:55:01. > :55:06.And here is the final element, the big dismount. Flicked one, flicked
:55:07. > :55:12.afflict the two, full twist and double back. Well, Beth, you said
:55:13. > :55:17.that this piece could well be the stumbling block. Unfortunately, I
:55:18. > :55:23.think that will take away that gold medal from her. Obviously there are
:55:24. > :55:28.still five more gymnasts to go in this apparatus final. Beam is all
:55:29. > :55:32.about being able to stay on. It was such a good start to the Read team,
:55:33. > :55:38.just that front somersault held back a bit too much. Well, she's been
:55:39. > :55:42.significantly ahead of the others on beam, it will still need a good
:55:43. > :55:47.routine to beat this. That was the best she's done throughout the
:55:48. > :55:52.competition, the front half. She was really confident on these layout
:55:53. > :55:57.somersaults, but on this one she opened out a fraction early, wanting
:55:58. > :56:02.to link it to the next jump and she had to recover. And really, putting
:56:03. > :56:07.the hands down like that, is really classed as a fall on the apparatus
:56:08. > :56:12.and is usually one hallmark duction. We will see. The judges have some
:56:13. > :56:17.leeway, if they felt it was just a hesitation or a brush of the hand,
:56:18. > :56:22.they can take less. But she's certainly opened the door.
:56:23. > :56:29.Well, Lauren Hernandez, her team-mate, is certainly capable of
:56:30. > :56:33.scoring 15.3. Do you know the other person capable of a big score? The
:56:34. > :56:43.Dutch girl, San -- Sanne Wevers. She's capable of
:56:44. > :56:46.challenging. There is Lauren Hernandez and she knows the door is
:56:47. > :56:52.open, there is a chance. She no doubt will have been out in the back
:56:53. > :56:58.gym, certainly won't have watched that performance. With how this
:56:59. > :57:03.final works, it can be a long wait in five, six, seven and eight
:57:04. > :57:08.positions, so they have time to go into the back gym and warm up. She
:57:09. > :57:15.may not have seen her own team-mates have that mistake. She held back too
:57:16. > :57:20.much and thought well. Now it's just a nervous wait. Her personal coach
:57:21. > :57:29.with her, who's done absolutely fantastic, to get her three Olympic
:57:30. > :57:35.gold medals already. Simone has seen the scoreboard, and it will not be
:57:36. > :57:38.enough. We don't think... 14.73, she's in the at the moment, but for
:57:39. > :57:48.how long? Lauren Hernandez can't help but now
:57:49. > :57:53.know the situation. Sanne Wevers, fourth highest qualifier now, with
:57:54. > :58:02.the chance for an Olympic medal. Silver at the Worlds last year. And
:58:03. > :58:09.of course the tension rackets up, but that was a very nice full
:58:10. > :58:19.turning flip mount. Super double spin with leg held in front. Free
:58:20. > :58:25.cartwheel, free cartwheel. That little step back means she's a bit
:58:26. > :58:31.down on start value, because we've seen her link the two free
:58:32. > :58:37.cartwheels into the walkovers really is Lee. She relieved does depend on
:58:38. > :58:46.the bonuses. Superb, triple spin just as difficult as the front turn.
:58:47. > :58:52.Spin with the leg up, backspin, double spin. That combination is
:58:53. > :58:57.absolutely beautiful, into a jump, and the rewards for that are just as
:58:58. > :59:02.much for the rewards for the big acrobatic skills. She has to do some
:59:03. > :59:09.acrobatics as well and she does there, another very nice full
:59:10. > :59:17.turning flip. Gymnasts have to do working load to the beam as well.
:59:18. > :59:22.Sideways moves, and then the big dismount. She's just pausing. It's
:59:23. > :59:31.an unusual dismount as well. Here we go... That was a big challenge. She
:59:32. > :59:32.gets through that routine without major deduction. Has she done
:59:33. > :59:42.enough? We will find out soon. You can find out whether Simone
:59:43. > :59:45.Biles hangs on Lord gets caught over on BBC Two. We're leaving you
