:00:51. > :00:56.Hello, and welcome to Rio Replay. Highlights of last night 's action

:00:57. > :01:02.on day ten of the real Olympic Games. Athletics topping the bill

:01:03. > :01:08.once again, but we start with a reminder of yesterday's action.

:01:09. > :01:12.Charlotte Dujardin and the Allegro put in a sublime display to retain

:01:13. > :01:19.their individual dressage title, a third Olympic title, and she becomes

:01:20. > :01:26.the first British woman to successfully defend their individual

:01:27. > :01:30.Olympic title -- Valegro. Mark Cavendish finally claimed his

:01:31. > :01:34.first Olympic medal with silver in the men's omnium, despite an

:01:35. > :01:38.illustrious career, including 30 Tour de France stage wins and a

:01:39. > :01:41.World Championship title on the road.

:01:42. > :01:47.He arrived in Rio without an Olympic medal to his name. No longer, the

:01:48. > :01:52.Manchester man claimed silver behind Elia Viviani of Italy.

:01:53. > :01:56.Laura Trott one in the women's omnium, she has an 8-point lead at

:01:57. > :02:06.the halfway stage after a dominant display from the three-time Olympic

:02:07. > :02:09.champion. Simone Biles this drive came to an end today, the all

:02:10. > :02:14.conquering American began the day with three gold medals in the bag

:02:15. > :02:17.already, but before that eluded her in the beam competition, she was

:02:18. > :02:26.forced to settle for bronze, her first defeat on the beam since 2013.

:02:27. > :02:32.The Netherlands gymnast Sanne Wevers took the lead. -- took the gold. And

:02:33. > :02:37.the men's badminton team have reached the semifinals. A medal is

:02:38. > :02:42.now well within their grasp. Now, we had to athletics, and other

:02:43. > :02:46.very special Olympic team, this lot can certainly go faster, higher and

:02:47. > :03:04.stronger -- our very special Olympic team.

:03:05. > :03:45.Where did that come from? That is absolutely fantastic! Brilliant. The

:03:46. > :03:50.A Team, apologies to you, Andrew Cotter!

:03:51. > :03:54.Sophie Hitchens is here! Well done. We are so thrilled for you, that was

:03:55. > :04:00.the most fantastic competition. We are delighted you are here with us

:04:01. > :04:03.to show your brilliant bronze, you were thrilled, with where that has

:04:04. > :04:08.taken the field events? Nobody has ever done what you did

:04:09. > :04:13.today, thoroughly enjoyed start to finish, congratulations, it was

:04:14. > :04:18.incredible. It captured everyone's... You know, the dreams.

:04:19. > :04:23.Loads of questions for you... I don't want to steal your thunder,

:04:24. > :04:27.but the last throw, going into the last round, in fifth place... Talk

:04:28. > :04:33.us through what was going through your mind? My coach was just like,

:04:34. > :04:40.keep it simple! I've done it in training so many times. To bring it

:04:41. > :04:44.into competition, as we know, it's very difficult. Like I said, I've

:04:45. > :04:49.done it in training and stayed in great shape, I knew if I put my

:04:50. > :04:54.technique together, it would go far. And it did! It always amazes me, you

:04:55. > :04:59.girls and women, you know as soon as you release, I say to Denise, how do

:05:00. > :05:02.they know before you look? You just know, you deal the tension on the

:05:03. > :05:10.hammer, it does not drop at any point. It feels good as soon as you

:05:11. > :05:14.let go -- you feel the tension. I saw them screaming, I knew it was

:05:15. > :05:16.good! Tell us about your relationship with him coming here is

:05:17. > :05:23.winning the best reaction for a coach in the Olympic Games, he was

:05:24. > :05:27.fantastic. And what you said to Phil afterwards, you have a brilliant

:05:28. > :05:31.dynamic between you. How did he help you move from fourth in the world to

:05:32. > :05:38.the rostrum? He's been with me for the last four years, after 2012. You

:05:39. > :05:47.know, it's been a difficult time since then. But... After my rough

:05:48. > :05:53.year in 2014, he always believed in me. I always appreciate that, there

:05:54. > :05:58.have been times when I haven't and I've wanted to give up, it's been

:05:59. > :06:03.too much but he's been there. And pushing me as far as I can go.

:06:04. > :06:06.Hopefully we can go even further. He gives so much, he just got married

:06:07. > :06:16.this year, then he left straightaway... To come to Europe

:06:17. > :06:19.and follow me around! To come to competitions, he has three daughters

:06:20. > :06:25.at home he leaves for the summer, he gives up a lot to coach me. I

:06:26. > :06:32.appreciate it. This is a huge moment for field, we have to go back to

:06:33. > :06:41.Fatima and Tessa days, 1988 for the last field throwing gold for a

:06:42. > :06:44.woman, and last year we had Ms Proctor, but girls might think they

:06:45. > :06:48.want to give it a go. Throwing events look fun, how did

:06:49. > :06:53.you find the hammer? Everyone goes on about your ballet and netball,

:06:54. > :06:57.when did you pick up the hammer and think, this is for me? My parents

:06:58. > :07:03.were involved in athletics, they took me to the local club, and was

:07:04. > :07:07.doing different events, like short and Sprint, my grandad was a fielder

:07:08. > :07:14.and he said he thought I would be good at it -- shot. We haven't

:07:15. > :07:17.looked back, really. Why is it that girls gravitate to the long johns,

:07:18. > :07:27.the sprints, and I guess the ones that get more airtime, -- long

:07:28. > :07:35.jumps. What is it about hammer? It is very unique. It's only here that

:07:36. > :07:41.you keep one foot at the same time on the ground. Like walking.

:07:42. > :07:46.Throwing events are amazing, you have to try yet to believe it. How

:07:47. > :07:52.do you train? You can't just throw it all day long. Give us a

:07:53. > :07:59.breakdown. We pretty much do throw all day long! Basically, over the

:08:00. > :08:03.winter we have double sessions in the morning and evening, we throw in

:08:04. > :08:09.every single session. The hammer is unique in that aspect, it is not a

:08:10. > :08:13.high impact event. So, like javelin, it is stressful on the body where

:08:14. > :08:19.you can't do it all the time, but the hammer you can. You can and work

:08:20. > :08:28.on your technique. We throw a lot, and obviously play a metric kind of

:08:29. > :08:37.things, we are throwing for less than five seconds, it is explosive

:08:38. > :08:41.things that we do. -- plyometric. We know about last year, what gave you

:08:42. > :08:45.do believe, you clearly wanted it more than anything in the world. You

:08:46. > :08:52.really believe that you could, we saw it in your eyes. We've come in

:08:53. > :08:56.this year, training has gone better than ever this last winter, I've

:08:57. > :09:04.moved up a bit of the step, and you know, that, to produce it on the

:09:05. > :09:08.day, is very difficult. But like you say, I've come up a bit of a level.

:09:09. > :09:12.What I love about you is that you look like you love competing, you

:09:13. > :09:17.can't wait to be in the cage, and you seem to thrive in the arena

:09:18. > :09:20.environment. Did you relish that moment today? Was there any time

:09:21. > :09:27.when you thought, my God, the pressure is on! After qualification,

:09:28. > :09:32.I knew I could perform better than I did in qualification, I was quite

:09:33. > :09:36.disappointed but it was about getting through, anything can

:09:37. > :09:41.happen. I went in the cage and it felt good, technically it felt good.

:09:42. > :09:48.I knew if I could hone it and put it together, it would go far. Where do

:09:49. > :09:52.you go now? You are 25, and there are women today ahead of you in

:09:53. > :09:56.their 30s, it is a sport where you have a bit of time to reach your

:09:57. > :10:00.prime, you moved from fourth to third in the year, where do you take

:10:01. > :10:04.this? I hope a long way, we have worked really hard and hopefully we

:10:05. > :10:09.will work even harder and hopefully I will have two more Olympics left,

:10:10. > :10:14.and quite a few more World Championships. It is about putting

:10:15. > :10:18.in the work, not getting ahead of myself really, we have a few steps

:10:19. > :10:22.to take. What would you say to any girls watching, if they are, they

:10:23. > :10:27.are quite late, but it is on tomorrow morning! This has inspired

:10:28. > :10:32.them, the whole Olympics has inspired them, how would you sell

:10:33. > :10:35.your sport? It is a unique event, it's amazing when you have that

:10:36. > :10:41.feeling, you let go and you know it has gone far. I think you've just

:10:42. > :10:46.got to try it, to see how amazing it feels. Is it an adrenaline surge?

:10:47. > :10:52.Definitely, you are out for over an hour, and you get three, maybe six

:10:53. > :11:05.attempts, every time you step in, you want to produce your best. To 30

:11:06. > :11:13.5am is the medal ceremony? Sorry, UK time! You looked and it! -- 2:35am.

:11:14. > :11:17.How will you be on the rostrum? When I'm up there, I think it will sink

:11:18. > :11:21.and more. I don't have my medal yet, it's like, have I really done it?

:11:22. > :11:27.But once I step up there, yes, I will be pleased. One more question,

:11:28. > :11:38.Steve? Yes, I want to hear everything! I had to mention the

:11:39. > :11:44.world record, 82 metres, how will where were you of the other athletes

:11:45. > :11:48.and where they were, Betty Hyndland behind you in the last round, how

:11:49. > :11:53.much were you looking around or staying in your bubble? I tried to

:11:54. > :11:55.stay in the bubble as much as possible, my coach tells me off

:11:56. > :12:01.otherwise! You try to stay blinkered. Even though I don't watch

:12:02. > :12:07.them throw, I know what place I'm in. You kind of know. When she threw

:12:08. > :12:12.the world record it was amazing but you have two stay focused on your.

:12:13. > :12:25.Sophie, huge congratulations, we loved it. We know that you will

:12:26. > :12:36.enjoy tonight, 10:35pm local time, to 30 5am -- to 30

:12:37. > :12:55.-- 02:35am UK time. This is what's coming up...

:12:56. > :13:02.The men's 800 metre final is at 2:25am, David Rudisha, the world

:13:03. > :13:08.record holder from London, is running with his work cut out if he

:13:09. > :13:14.retains this Olympic title. In between is the men's -- in

:13:15. > :13:20.between the men's race and the women's race, Sophie will get her

:13:21. > :13:25.medal in the Olympic Stadium! Omar MacLeod, the world indoor

:13:26. > :13:30.champion, 2016, the lead time in the world this year of 12.98, Andrew

:13:31. > :13:35.Cotter, key will be one of the men to beat if you are going to be the

:13:36. > :13:38.Olympic champion in this unpredictable of track events!

:13:39. > :13:43.COMMENTATOR: Yes, unpredictable, he's the fastest in the world this

:13:44. > :13:47.year, his last two races before Rio, he fell, in Monaco in the diamond

:13:48. > :13:51.league and in Hungary, not a confidence booster, things can go

:13:52. > :13:57.wrong in the hurdles but 12.98 this season.

:13:58. > :14:01.He became the world indoor champion. He was going so well.

:14:02. > :14:05.Not a big man at all but has wonderful hurdling technique.

:14:06. > :14:12.Conditions? It's not raining heavily but it is a steady damp cloth.

:14:13. > :14:18.Lowered on the stadium. Fairly still with a hint of a bruise, picking up

:14:19. > :14:25.occasionally. -- breeze. A smile through the rain will stop Jeff

:14:26. > :14:27.Porter, his wife Tiffany Porter, she goes in the women's 100 metre

:14:28. > :14:38.hurdles for Britain. As we look at the full start list,

:14:39. > :14:41.like for Yeison Rivas Antwon Hicks, who runs for Nigeria,

:14:42. > :14:50.goes in lane eight. Omar McLeod, Ali Kame,

:14:51. > :14:52.Yeison Rivas, Alexander John, Wataru Yazawa, Jeff Porter,

:14:53. > :14:54.Antwon Hicks and Jeffrey Julmis The first of five heats in the men's

:14:55. > :15:27.110m hurdles, four leanly away. Omar McLe, d and Rivas about to hit

:15:28. > :15:30.a couple of Porter coming It was safe and, again,

:15:31. > :15:43.that's what you're looking Getting through quickly is a bonus

:15:44. > :15:54.but get through safely because we've been talking about how things

:15:55. > :15:58.can go wrong. Alexander John, we talked

:15:59. > :16:00.about him beforehand Basically, Andrew, every time he's

:16:01. > :16:08.stayed on his feet this year, If he's clean, he's smooth,

:16:09. > :16:16.he's the fastest man on the track. In every single one of the hurdles

:16:17. > :16:19.events, we have new sprint hurdle kings because all the defending

:16:20. > :16:23.champions are not running. Omar has a big chance of becoming

:16:24. > :16:27.a new Olympic Champion. He's very nippy over these bars

:16:28. > :16:34.and he has the sub-10-second 100m Colin Jackson himself

:16:35. > :16:43.was not particularly tall. But if you've got that bounce

:16:44. > :16:45.and that technique, If you've got that real ballistic

:16:46. > :16:52.strength, where you've got the elastic strength that you need

:16:53. > :16:55.for these high hurdles, then high is not really

:16:56. > :17:02.a big issue for you. You can see the way he approaches,

:17:03. > :17:09.the way he runs, he's full of that bounce,

:17:10. > :17:11.a natural runner, brilliant to see. I'm happy that he's returned,

:17:12. > :17:14.really, to good form this year because he suffered a couple

:17:15. > :17:17.of injuries along the way so it's To me he's one of the favourites and

:17:18. > :17:22.he's with Phil downstairs. What's it like out there conditions

:17:23. > :17:26.wise with the rain falling down? Um, I've been through this

:17:27. > :17:30.and I know how to work through, um. I know how to work through climates

:17:31. > :17:40.like this because I train in So, um, I just wanted

:17:41. > :17:44.to go out here and get Obviously, it goes up a level

:17:45. > :17:49.tomorrow, semis and final. But you're coming in

:17:50. > :17:54.as the world-leader. It's good to have confidence,

:17:55. > :18:02.especially in a hurdle race like this, regardless

:18:03. > :18:03.of what happens. In terms of the overall

:18:04. > :18:07.Olympics experience, First time at the Olympics,

:18:08. > :18:12.I'm trying to seize every moment and embrace every opportunity

:18:13. > :18:14.and just have fun. You know, that's

:18:15. > :18:16.what I've been doing. Um, you know, competing

:18:17. > :18:18.was long overdue. I was ready to go out

:18:19. > :18:23.there and start competing. But, the time is now,

:18:24. > :18:26.so let's just go out and have fun. Omar McLeod safely through, four go

:18:27. > :18:50.automatically, with Jeff Porter, It is tipping it down which,

:18:51. > :18:56.of course, I think for the pole vault is far more significant

:18:57. > :18:58.than it is for some Yeah, look, it's absolutely

:18:59. > :19:01.the worst possible conditions The athletes huddled under

:19:02. > :19:09.the shelter there. You can see Renaud Lavillenie,

:19:10. > :19:24.who won't come in at this height. We have had the bar set at 5.15

:19:25. > :19:28.metres. We have had two fouls already. -- 5.50.

:19:29. > :19:31.If it worsens, I won't be surprised if this is suspended

:19:32. > :19:33.because there comes a point where it's dangerous, quite simply.

:19:34. > :19:53.This is Xue, the first jump of the competition.

:19:54. > :19:59.This is before the rain really started to come down.

:20:00. > :20:02.You can just see it starting to come down there, but it's much stronger

:20:03. > :20:05.now and it seems as though the event has been halted.

:20:06. > :20:14.We got World Champion from last year, Shawnacy Barber.

:20:15. > :20:16.It's a great pole vault final in the making but,

:20:17. > :20:18.of course, we want to see it

:20:19. > :20:29.The grip is where the athletes are challenged.

:20:30. > :20:31.There's two ends, on the floor with the spikes,

:20:32. > :20:38.but more importantly the grip on the pole.

:20:39. > :20:40.If you question there or doubt it in the slightest,

:20:41. > :20:43.you're in a bad place and that's probably what was going on in

:20:44. > :20:46.the athlete's mind there, who has jumped 5.82m at his best.

:20:47. > :21:01.As we see German Chiaraviglio of Argentina, and he bailed

:21:02. > :21:08.In fact, the track is beginning to flood.

:21:09. > :21:15.Yeah, you can see one of the athletes, he's picked up...

:21:16. > :21:17.That's in lane three, he's picked up his lane marker,

:21:18. > :21:19.Baji of Hungary, and put it over his head.

:21:20. > :21:31.While it's coming down as heavy as this, next to the pole vault,

:21:32. > :21:35.this might be the worst event to take part in under this deluge

:21:36. > :21:37.we're experiencing just at the moment, and there's

:21:38. > :21:39.Orlando Ortega, certainly a medal contender.

:21:40. > :21:40.Recently, very recently given clearance to compete

:21:41. > :21:46.I'm just wondering whether the starter might just

:21:47. > :21:52.No, he's climbing up on to his rostrum, I can

:21:53. > :22:05.So, top four to go through if they can negotiate

:22:06. > :22:09.Cabral Baji Anousone, Trajkovic, Buhler, Carter,

:22:10. > :22:22.Ortega has run close to 13 seconds this year.

:22:23. > :22:33.These tracks are slick at the best of times anyway, and look at that,

:22:34. > :22:47.They're shaking their heads, and why not?

:22:48. > :22:51.You come to the Olympics games and in Rio it's not what you expect

:22:52. > :22:59.Just as they go to the blocks, Colin, tough conditions but they've

:23:00. > :23:05.Yeah, these are awful conditions for the hurdlers.

:23:06. > :23:08.Under the circumstance, the track looks like a mirror

:23:09. > :23:11.to you because the light is coming from all angles and it's difficult

:23:12. > :23:16.So Deuce Carter in lane seven next to Orlando Ortega,

:23:17. > :23:26.He won silver at the European Championships recently in Amsterdam.

:23:27. > :23:29.He's in lane three in the green of Hungary.

:23:30. > :23:46.Cabral comes through for third, and right in the middle,

:23:47. > :23:48.Trajkovic, the Cypriot, top four to go through.

:23:49. > :23:53.You got the feeling that somebody was going to mess up then

:23:54. > :23:58.and this is who it was, Deuce Carter, 13.2,

:23:59. > :24:02.best this year 13.20, second in the Jamaican Championships

:24:03. > :24:08.and, well, these conditions might have put paid to - well, they have -

:24:09. > :24:11.there are some fastest loser spots available and it's fairly

:24:12. > :24:13.generous qualification, but he clattered, I think,

:24:14. > :24:17.about the seventh hurdle, Colin and that was it for him.

:24:18. > :24:22.Ortega out of the blocks really well.

:24:23. > :24:29.Obviously a former Cuban, now running for Spain.

:24:30. > :24:32.What is impressive about him is that he keeps a cool head.

:24:33. > :24:35.You could see on the start line that even with the rain pouring

:24:36. > :24:37.around him, he was not going to get distracted.

:24:38. > :24:41.He had to qualify well and get through the race.

:24:42. > :24:43.Baji has been running very well all season.

:24:44. > :24:51.Shame that the weather is not matching his skills at this moment.

:24:52. > :24:57.He's out of the blocks well, as I said.

:24:58. > :25:02.He is an easy stridor. He kind of popped over that hurdle.

:25:03. > :25:07.He pushed it so hard that he got a little bit close to it

:25:08. > :25:10.so when that happens, you throw yourself up in the air

:25:11. > :25:13.to take a little bit of speed off your performance, and every time

:25:14. > :25:16.you see somebody go over a little bit high, they're recovering

:25:17. > :25:18.In these conditions, we will forgive him.

:25:19. > :25:21.He'll be much tighter come the next two rounds, so watch

:25:22. > :25:29.I've just seen Deuce Carter being consoled by Omar McLeod.

:25:30. > :25:47.Cabral hit a couple of hurdles but hung on for fourth place.

:25:48. > :25:49.But, um, the officials have walked off now, I can tell you.

:25:50. > :25:52.So the officials have picked up their chairs and walked off.

:25:53. > :25:55.We've got no action currently going on.

:25:56. > :26:05.These are very treacherous conditions for hurdler and, indeed,

:26:06. > :26:08.for the pole vault, and it's not fair to athletes who've had to come

:26:09. > :26:10.all this way to compete in these conditions.

:26:11. > :26:12.So a little bit of a delay here, guys.

:26:13. > :26:18.And there couldn't be a worse mix, could there -

:26:19. > :26:21.it's kind of like the perfect storm of events that's come together

:26:22. > :26:25.The hurdles, makes it almost impossible to see your hurdles

:26:26. > :26:27.and obviously dangerous again as well.

:26:28. > :26:31.And, of course, the discus slipping out of the hand.

:26:32. > :26:33.So suspension of those events at the moment.

:26:34. > :26:35.Carter was shaking his head before the race, Colin.

:26:36. > :26:38.He clearly felt that these weren't conditions to be Hurdling in.

:26:39. > :26:42.They're not comfortable conditions whatsoever.

:26:43. > :26:46.And, you know, for the hurdlers themselves, when you're trying

:26:47. > :26:48.to qualify for an Olympic Games semifinal and you know

:26:49. > :26:51.it's a competitive race, you want everything to be as good

:26:52. > :26:53.as you possibly can so you don't make any mistakes.

:26:54. > :26:56.You're just relying on your ability to do that.

:26:57. > :27:00.And when the climate goes against you, you have to add another

:27:01. > :27:02.dimension to how you're going to approach the race.

:27:03. > :27:04.This becomes very complicated then for hurdlers.

:27:05. > :27:07.I mentioned before about the mirror effect from the track.

:27:08. > :27:10.Because lights are coming in from every single angle

:27:11. > :27:13.and when you have half an inch of water on the track,

:27:14. > :27:15.it's very difficult to see, so that could have been one

:27:16. > :27:18.of the things that caused a little bit of a problem for Carter.

:27:19. > :27:30.Deuce Carter, if they decided now, would there be a situation

:27:31. > :27:33.where they say they cannot go on with the hurdles competition,

:27:34. > :27:36.how is that far for Deuce Carter, because everybody from that heat

:27:37. > :27:41.We were all saying up here that we need a decision quickly

:27:42. > :27:45.so the hurdlers get off the track or they state out there and run.

:27:46. > :27:47.They made the decision to go out there and run

:27:48. > :27:49.so unfortunately for him, the result will stand.

:27:50. > :27:50.Well, here's Carter's race beforehand.

:27:51. > :28:03.Yeah, completely, and in contrast to Ortega, who was focused.

:28:04. > :28:08.You have to stay in the moment and, unfortunately, Carter had already

:28:09. > :28:11.almost given up already mentally that it was just not fair.

:28:12. > :28:13.Omar McLeod had a different attitude to the weather.

:28:14. > :28:16.I don't think it was raining quite as heavy for his race.

:28:17. > :28:27.He's approached it and says, "Hey, it's raining but it's raining

:28:28. > :28:30.in everyone's lane and I know what I've got to do."

:28:31. > :28:32.And like Colin said, he went high above the hurdles,

:28:33. > :28:35.being careful, popping up and making sure he's got good clearance and,

:28:36. > :28:38.you know, you have to, you have to get out there and just

:28:39. > :28:43.I was saying earlier today when we were on our way out

:28:44. > :28:46.here that I hated warming up in the rain but it was always, OK,

:28:47. > :28:49.it's raining, it's raining for everyone and get on with it.

:28:50. > :28:53.It would take me a few minutes to sort of get around the fact that

:28:54. > :28:56.it's raining and I don't like it, but once I got into it, it was,

:28:57. > :28:59.you know, you ignored it and did what you have to do.

:29:00. > :29:02.One of the key things for all the world-class

:29:03. > :29:04.athletes that take you up and beyond everything else

:29:05. > :29:06.is your approach in these kinds of circumstances.

:29:07. > :29:09.It's to remain focused in the job in hand.

:29:10. > :29:11.You summed it up nicely and said it's even for everybody.

:29:12. > :29:13.Nobody has an advantage in the circumstances.

:29:14. > :29:16.It's only about your mentality here that will put you.

:29:17. > :29:19.It is even in that race but obviously the variables go

:29:20. > :29:23.And if you're unlucky enough to be in a heat

:29:24. > :29:26.that is in the absolute deluge we have now, your times might be

:29:27. > :29:29.slower and if you look at slowest losers, that's a problem.

:29:30. > :29:35.That is the issue but it's one of the things that is

:29:36. > :29:41.I've been in situations where I was in a semifinal heat

:29:42. > :29:50.where the wind was blowing against us and the heat

:29:51. > :29:53.when the wind was not blowing against the other

:29:54. > :29:56.of the pool and ended up out in lane eight.

:29:57. > :30:15.The officials have come back out, they mean business.

:30:16. > :30:32.What are they doing, Colin? They are protecting the discus. I have to

:30:33. > :30:40.say, I've never thrown discus. It is all about the grip and making sure

:30:41. > :30:46.that you have a hand on release. We didn't know when this was going to

:30:47. > :30:54.cook off. We saw him at the anniversary games, he has had a

:30:55. > :31:00.blighted career with injury. His shape is very good at this moment.

:31:01. > :31:05.Luckily he sent me his last training session, so I've seen it. He is very

:31:06. > :31:10.swift at this moment in time, which is great to see. He hears at the

:31:11. > :31:15.anniversary games. He ran a good, strong heat, where he set personal

:31:16. > :31:19.best. He is now starting to run off every single barrier well. Strongly.

:31:20. > :31:24.He is pushing into it, that comes from confidence. He absolutely

:31:25. > :31:30.destroyed the field there. You see what I mean, lousy pushes. And you

:31:31. > :31:33.see every single heat he is just taking millimetre is off, every

:31:34. > :31:36.single one of the other athletes. They are a little bit softer, that

:31:37. > :31:42.includes Merritt, the Olympic champion. That is what is great to

:31:43. > :31:44.see about him this year. It wouldn't surprise me if he runs a whole metre

:31:45. > :31:50.faster than that. Not here to defend his title,

:31:51. > :31:53.his opponent, and it is not raining right now but it is wet

:31:54. > :32:00.on the track. You will need to bear that in mind

:32:01. > :32:03.as he is setting himself I have trained in Bath on many

:32:04. > :32:14.occasions and we do get wet weather. His coach will insist

:32:15. > :32:17.he goes outside. He doesn't like the softness

:32:18. > :32:20.of staying indoors. So for me I would tell him to go out

:32:21. > :32:24.there and do exactly what he knows Do not change anything,

:32:25. > :32:29.there is no need to change anything. You know the height

:32:30. > :32:32.of the barriers, just do it. And in the blocks, presumably

:32:33. > :32:34.you can get rid of surface water, does it affect

:32:35. > :32:46.the pressure from the blocks? The only thing which is

:32:47. > :32:50.uncomfortable as you don't People tend to wipe their legs,

:32:51. > :32:55.their clothes, just so they can get We talk about the weather,

:32:56. > :32:59.and it is fine at the moment. When there are distractions around

:33:00. > :33:08.you, you rely on that inner It is so important, and Andrew

:33:09. > :33:13.was robbed, basically, And so now, this is

:33:14. > :33:19.his big opportunity. Now that his body is healthy,

:33:20. > :33:23.to experience this experience. You really hope that he gets

:33:24. > :33:31.a little bit of luck when it comes to the injuries

:33:32. > :33:34.that he has been blighted by. And obviously that cramp

:33:35. > :33:36.at the anniversary games But he is here, he is fit and strong

:33:37. > :33:46.and it is dry at the moment. So unfortunately for his opponent

:33:47. > :33:49.who didn't have the right frame That is in the lap of the gods,

:33:50. > :33:59.that is the worst of it. Let's see if our

:34:00. > :34:01.commentary team are back. They are giving me

:34:02. > :34:04.really dirty looks. Andrew Cotter, our

:34:05. > :34:18.Scottish correspondent. Andrew Pozzi, it was London four

:34:19. > :34:22.years ago that he was injured just before the Olympics in London,

:34:23. > :34:24.and tried to compete, had a hamstring problem,

:34:25. > :34:26.had to pull up in his heat, and then followed so many foot

:34:27. > :34:29.injuries and operations, So this is his latest chance,

:34:30. > :34:38.he is chance at an Olympic Games. Stiff competition in this heat

:34:39. > :34:41.for going through automatically, Dimitri Bascou is there,

:34:42. > :34:47.Andrew Riley, the South African as well, and Andrew Riley,

:34:48. > :35:07.the Jamaican, he should be quick. Joao De Oliviera is there,

:35:08. > :35:09.the Brazilian, popular There is the French

:35:10. > :35:14.champion, the European Eddie Lovett, who runs

:35:15. > :35:38.for the US Virgin Islands, Andrew Riley Jamaica,

:35:39. > :35:40.Thomas of Trinidad Tobago, Andrew Pozzi

:35:41. > :35:44.in lane number nine. First of five hits in

:35:45. > :36:03.the 110-metre hurdles. Away cleanly, and Pozzi is cleanly

:36:04. > :36:06.over the first barrier. Pozzi going nicely, Bascou

:36:07. > :36:09.and Pozzi, leading them out. And Riley in a bit of trouble

:36:10. > :36:12.now, but comes through. Survivors are scarce,

:36:13. > :36:20.no more than that, that is the knife There was a gasp from the British

:36:21. > :36:30.fans, and I am sure from Pozzi as well, but he kept his composure

:36:31. > :36:33.and his shape, and kept going for the line and one

:36:34. > :36:37.of the automatic qualifying places. Everything was in the right place,

:36:38. > :36:50.out of the blocks well. he decides to get into a race

:36:51. > :37:04.with Bascou, and he caught that hurdle, he smashed it,

:37:05. > :37:06.but managed to haul himself Head on, this will

:37:07. > :37:12.tell us the story. Out hard, driving seven strides

:37:13. > :37:14.into this first hurdle, Just the hurdles in front of him,

:37:15. > :37:25.as he starts to move away, you start to see a couple of leading legs,

:37:26. > :37:31.and he would be wondering to himself, "Am I in

:37:32. > :37:36.the right position?" He stands on that one,

:37:37. > :37:45.that is what causes him to be pulled all the way back,

:37:46. > :37:48.and he manages to just keep himself upright to get into the automatic

:37:49. > :37:50.qualifying position. Something wanted to have a look at,

:37:51. > :37:54.he used to stoop low to try and get across the line,

:37:55. > :37:56.but when I watch the finish here from the Brazilian,

:37:57. > :37:59.you can see Bascou is out in front, but four go through automatically,

:38:00. > :38:02.and you see him in the shot here, Superman-style, this

:38:03. > :38:12.is the way to make it. This gets in fourth place,

:38:13. > :38:14.because his upper body is somewhere If he was half a metre back,

:38:15. > :38:20.he would not have made it. Andrew Pozzi made it,

:38:21. > :38:23.safely through. I made a stupid mistake,

:38:24. > :38:33.and you cannot afford I just gave everything

:38:34. > :38:46.I could to make sure I qualified. How was it with the rain

:38:47. > :38:51.and the delay you had? The conditions were awful

:38:52. > :38:53.just a few minutes ago. We were waiting to come up

:38:54. > :38:56.onto the track, we were told we would be delayed,

:38:57. > :38:58.but it is no bother, it is only 15 minutes,

:38:59. > :39:01.so we just keep warm in just but you are looking in fantastic

:39:02. > :39:08.form compared to four years ago, This must be a great opportunity

:39:09. > :39:13.to be in the shape. I have come into the Olympics

:39:14. > :39:16.in the best shape in my life, it is just I cannot afford to make

:39:17. > :39:22.those mistake tomorrow. it is just I cannot afford to make

:39:23. > :39:25.those mistakes tomorrow. Great relief for us here,

:39:26. > :39:35.because he was running so well. He just hit that hurdle

:39:36. > :39:44.which caused him to crash through the next few barriers,

:39:45. > :39:47.but he is so much in shape and he was running really quickly,

:39:48. > :39:50.so he managed to recover We see Bascou looking so smooth,

:39:51. > :39:59.and one of the favourites here, hopefully, hopefully you will see

:40:00. > :40:10.those cricket times, hopefully, hopefully you will see

:40:11. > :40:12.those quicker times, but you see that Superman, Bascou,

:40:13. > :40:14.literally, both feet off He did not seem to hit

:40:15. > :40:24.the hurdle there, or did he? I don't think he hit the hurdle,

:40:25. > :40:28.but he can say that he was actually just leaning for the tape,

:40:29. > :40:31.that is what he could say. I mean, it is objective in the end,

:40:32. > :40:43.they would have to make a decision. I don't know if there is any rule

:40:44. > :40:46.that says that you cannot leave, your feet cannot leave the track

:40:47. > :40:49.as you cross the line. It has to be quicker to keep

:40:50. > :40:51.running, it can't be Sometimes if you do not

:40:52. > :40:56.time your lean right, You are better off for

:40:57. > :41:06.sure staying upright. He is a star of hurdling,

:41:07. > :41:11.he is not in the NFL yet, but he is a star of American

:41:12. > :41:15.football, University of Oregon, Devon Allen, he comes here as one

:41:16. > :41:18.of the medal favourites, And he is so inexperienced at this

:41:19. > :41:42.level, and indeed in terms of international competition,

:41:43. > :41:47.he will not know too much about any of these athletes, I'm not

:41:48. > :41:49.sure he has even raced It is not the easiest of heats,

:41:50. > :41:53.although the top four Belocian in lane three

:41:54. > :41:58.from France, there he is. He had a big knee injury playing

:41:59. > :42:18.American football last year. He was actually playing

:42:19. > :42:26.in the Rose Bowl, the big college game, he blew his knee out

:42:27. > :42:28.when returning the kick-off, and no track season last year

:42:29. > :42:30.to speak of, really. Managing somehow to play both sports

:42:31. > :42:35.to a very high level. He says he would like to do that

:42:36. > :42:39.for the rest of his career. I wonder if he won a gold medal

:42:40. > :42:44.whether that would change that. His cousin won a silver

:42:45. > :42:47.medal in boxing in 1988, Belocian of France right over

:42:48. > :42:59.far side in lane three. He won a bronze medal in the recent

:43:00. > :43:10.European Championships. Traber from Germany in lane five,

:43:11. > :43:28.he is in good form as well. Belocian very clearly,

:43:29. > :43:31.he held his hands as well, He can jump up and down,

:43:32. > :43:40.Colin, you are a great start, there are nerves out there,

:43:41. > :43:45.but this is top four, it is not a difficult

:43:46. > :43:48.qualification, you understand it In big races we have

:43:49. > :43:55.seen him do well. He is a potential finalist,

:43:56. > :43:59.and he does that. He will be absolutely

:44:00. > :44:14.furious with himself. He is now just going to have to wait

:44:15. > :44:18.because I think there will be no We know he would be distraught,

:44:19. > :44:25.and he is upset, but he just needs to move away and deal

:44:26. > :44:27.with his emotions away from the rest of the guys,

:44:28. > :44:30.and he is doing that now. A lot of French supporters,

:44:31. > :44:33.we saw earlier on in the crowd, he has gone from being distraught

:44:34. > :44:35.to being furious with I don't think he is really

:44:36. > :44:55.listening, honestly. He just needs to keep

:44:56. > :44:57.away from the start, All right, we have got Traber,

:44:58. > :45:13.the rest of the field, and Devon Allen,

:45:14. > :45:15.the American sensation. Allen gets a good start,

:45:16. > :45:36.so does Traber. Allen is just about

:45:37. > :45:38.leading this one. It is the Greek athlete just taking

:45:39. > :45:41.it from the American, Douvalidis, has an awful lot of experience,

:45:42. > :45:44.and despite the empty lane either Not somebody we know that well,

:45:45. > :46:03.a lot of things being said about him, he is a very

:46:04. > :46:12.confident young man, and the new American champion,

:46:13. > :46:21.but we have not really seen Certainly my first proper look

:46:22. > :46:26.at him, apart from what I have seen, The first I have seen

:46:27. > :46:29.him live as well. Just to get into the rhythm,

:46:30. > :46:34.you need to get your cadence going, you can see how he takes the hurdle

:46:35. > :46:37.there, his hips completely dropped. He is not as tall as some

:46:38. > :46:39.of the other athletes, his body composition

:46:40. > :46:51.and his legs seem very short Let's have a look at it again.

:46:52. > :46:52.Head-on, break it down a little bit more.

:46:53. > :46:55.Out of the blocks, he is a bit taller then Andrew Pozzi,

:46:56. > :46:58.you can see when he hits that barrier, his whole hip struck,

:46:59. > :47:02.and that caused him to hit the next hurdle, now he has to pop up

:47:03. > :47:08.a little bit and give himself someone to recover.

:47:09. > :47:09.Otherwise you will keep hitting the barriers

:47:10. > :47:16.This is just the learning curve, it is getting those cobwebs out,

:47:17. > :47:28.All of the hurdlers who make mistakes...

:47:29. > :47:31.I think they will polish that up by the next round.

:47:32. > :47:35.We are in the second round of the women's

:47:36. > :47:45.The Croatian, a foul in the first round, water

:47:46. > :47:56.-- auto qualification. She needs to get a throw to settle things. Only

:47:57. > :48:01.three throws to qualify. It is going sideways.

:48:02. > :48:06.It has nearly hit one of the officials

:48:07. > :48:12.She is under real pressure then, she has only one more chance,

:48:13. > :48:14.huge odds-on favourite to take the title

:48:15. > :48:23.It was a long throw, but two crosses, two fouls.

:48:24. > :48:27.It is out the sector, it won't be measured.

:48:28. > :48:32.Here is the world champion from last year, also on a foul.

:48:33. > :48:37.The discus throwers disrupted by the rain.

:48:38. > :48:41.As have all the Olympians this evening.

:48:42. > :48:52.The warmup was disrupted by a good 20 minutes.

:48:53. > :48:55.Caballero winds herself up, a big shout.

:48:56. > :48:58.She has hit the cage and it is also a red flag

:48:59. > :49:00.To resounding favourites, Caballero and Perkovic,

:49:01. > :49:16.-- both an two fouls. Two groups of throws. 12 athletes only to go

:49:17. > :49:20.through to the final. Another final that has been

:49:21. > :49:24.disrupted about to get underway I spoke to Steve Hooker,

:49:25. > :49:34.from the Australian commentary team next to us, and he said this will go

:49:35. > :49:37.down to whoever is best at waiting. And Lavillenie is well used to

:49:38. > :49:41.doing that. You have to be patient

:49:42. > :49:56.on a night like this. False start again, keeping his

:49:57. > :50:11.concentration. Devon Allen, the American sensation going through.

:50:12. > :50:22.The result of heat three. A bit of a starter over the final barriers, but

:50:23. > :50:24.Andrew Riley went through. -- a bit of a stutter.

:50:25. > :50:31.Lawrence Clarke goes in the final heat in this round.

:50:32. > :50:33.He finished fourth in London but that

:50:34. > :50:39.To make the final here would be a huge achievement.

:50:40. > :50:43.It's a tough heat he's got to make it through the first round.

:50:44. > :50:50.I'm looking at the fastest losers times. 13:58 would get you through.

:50:51. > :50:52.Lawrence Clarke is certainly capable of the speed that

:50:53. > :51:03.As I mentioned, it's a tough heat, because there are five men in this

:51:04. > :51:06.line-up who have run quicker times this season than Lawrence Clarke and

:51:07. > :51:09.Czykier has done so, Martinot-Lagarde has done so,

:51:10. > :51:13.There is Ash, second in the US trials behind Devon Allen,

:51:14. > :51:34.Just inside you see Sousa, the Brazilian athlete.

:51:35. > :51:37.The French look as if they're all carrying rucksacks.

:51:38. > :51:44.Pascal Martinot-Lagarde doesn't like the start, he says.

:51:45. > :51:51.He is not a great starter, he has admitted himself.

:51:52. > :51:54.He prefers the middle of the race when he's in autopilot,

:51:55. > :52:03.Can Lawrence Clarke get into the semifinals here?

:52:04. > :52:17.The final heat in the first round of the men's 110m hurdles.

:52:18. > :52:19.You can see Martinot-Lagarde bounds and strides to the first barrier

:52:20. > :52:21.and Lawrence Clarke is going nicely at the moment.

:52:22. > :52:25.And also going well is Ronnie Ash on the inside here.

:52:26. > :52:27.And Martinot-Lagarde and Ronnie Ash and Lawrence Clarke

:52:28. > :52:32.Some way behind Martinot-Lagarde and Ronnie Ash.

:52:33. > :52:35.I think Czykier was finishing quickly for Poland in fourth.

:52:36. > :52:37.But Ash and Martinot-Lagarde take the first two, Lawrence Clarke

:52:38. > :52:43.A round of applause for fans and for himself.

:52:44. > :52:49.Very competent bit of Hurdling from Lawrence.

:52:50. > :52:55.He's one of these athletes who is good technically and he gets

:52:56. > :53:00.So he gets a great rhythm that he just establishes very early

:53:01. > :53:13.That is one of his big strengths, why he made the final in 2012. He

:53:14. > :53:16.has good speed coupled with confidence knowing that he is not

:53:17. > :53:21.going to make any mistakes whatsoever.

:53:22. > :53:24.So for me it was a good run by Lawrence and I'm

:53:25. > :53:27.Actually, I'm noticing that the Brazilian, Souza got

:53:28. > :53:30.Brazilians are performing above their level.

:53:31. > :53:32.They both made it through to the semifinal.

:53:33. > :53:38.We've always talked about home crowd advantage, and what can happen

:53:39. > :53:40.when you've get everybody in a stadium cheering

:53:41. > :53:44.You can see Martinot-Lagarde to the right of our screen,

:53:45. > :53:48.Pascal always looks tense over the barriers, doesn't he?

:53:49. > :53:55.Lawrence just relies on a little bit more finesse.

:53:56. > :54:07.Someone got a false start in the race before me and it reminds

:54:08. > :54:11.In the semifinal, anything can happen.

:54:12. > :54:17.Obviously last time I made it through as the fastest loser

:54:18. > :54:20.to the Olympic final so tomorrow night I'm coming back with my game

:54:21. > :54:32.On paper, there are some guys who go faster than you there.

:54:33. > :54:36.It shows the competitive instinct you have got, you can step it up a

:54:37. > :54:38.level. I was outside the semifinal

:54:39. > :54:40.slot and came four. When people get out

:54:41. > :55:02.on a semifinal startline, I've been waiting for my years for

:55:03. > :55:04.this. -- I've been waiting for years.

:55:05. > :55:06.No other race matters apart from this.

:55:07. > :55:08.The Olympic semifinal, my whole family is hereafter.

:55:09. > :55:16.There's an appreciation from Lawrence Clarke himself that

:55:17. > :55:18.he's not the quickest but if he's in the semifinals

:55:19. > :55:21.and perhaps makes the final, if he's there and he's a clean,

:55:22. > :55:24.tidy hurdler so other things can happen and he's got to be

:55:25. > :55:26.He's certainly through to the semifinal.

:55:27. > :55:29.Ronnie Ash, Martinot-Lagarde, Souza going through and fastest

:55:30. > :55:31.loser from that heat in Czykier and Ristic.

:55:32. > :55:33.These are all the qualifiers for the semifinals,

:55:34. > :55:35.which are tomorrow, with the final just a few hours later.

:55:36. > :55:37.Omar McLeod was the quickest qualifier.

:55:38. > :55:41.He was the quickest in the world this year.

:55:42. > :55:43.Two Frenchmen through, and two Britons through as well.

:55:44. > :55:47.A couple of Brazilians made it as well.

:55:48. > :55:50.So, a good-looking event from an international point of view

:55:51. > :55:53.and from a home point of view from the Brazilian crowd, it will be

:55:54. > :56:01.a good evening for the semifinals and the final tomorrow.

:56:02. > :56:04.Well, we got there in the end, didn't we?

:56:05. > :56:07.We had a delay of 25 minutes or so with the rain and the weather.

:56:08. > :56:13.The rain is definitely gone and the heats carried on and well

:56:14. > :56:16.done to the British boys, Andrew Pozzi is through,

:56:17. > :56:22.Pascal Martinot-Lagarde was best in the world in 2014, and we're just

:56:23. > :56:27.It looks a bit awkward because of his height.

:56:28. > :56:30.I was saying to you that it looks like between the hurdles he doesn't

:56:31. > :56:41.Because he's so tall, he has to make allowances for the hurdles.

:56:42. > :56:44.He doesn't stride out in the same way as the other guys.

:56:45. > :56:47.He has to get his feet down really quickly in order to make room

:56:48. > :56:58.You know, he's a world-class hurdler but what was more

:56:59. > :57:01.concerning was those, um, things on his arcs.

:57:02. > :57:03.Yeah, it's not because he's cycling home in the dark.!

:57:04. > :57:06.You were explaining the science behind them, Michael and perhaps

:57:07. > :57:09.we'll come back to them in a moment because Usain Bolt is in the house

:57:10. > :57:12.and you can see that look there is because the crowd have

:57:13. > :57:14.started booing again because Justin Gatlin is also

:57:15. > :57:17.in the house ready for his medal presentation, his silver medal

:57:18. > :57:21.Usain Bolt said post-race yesterday he had never heard it before

:57:22. > :57:34.Usain Bolt said, you know, this is something he's never heard

:57:35. > :57:37.before, and he kind of chuckled, it was weird and bizarre,

:57:38. > :57:40.and then you saw Seb Coe there as well just kind of looking

:57:41. > :57:44.It's an interesting situation when you've got a crowd booing

:57:45. > :57:46.the athletes that have tested positive, and we've heard

:57:47. > :57:49.about the swimming athletes pointing fingers at athletes who have tested

:57:50. > :57:53.It's disappointing that athletes feel that they have to do this

:57:54. > :57:57.and the fans feel that they have to start, you know, highlighting

:57:58. > :58:00.these situations, and maybe that's because they feel like the governing

:58:01. > :58:03.bodies are not doing it, and they have to take matters

:58:04. > :58:09.It's disappointing, because I think that it's not what the competition

:58:10. > :58:11.and competitive environment is supposed to be about.

:58:12. > :58:16.They seem to be selective in who they're booing.

:58:17. > :58:19.But let's go down to Steve Cram, because this is a moment to enjoy,

:58:20. > :58:21.the legend that is Usain Bolt, Steve.

:58:22. > :58:26.A couple of legends presenting the medals, Seb Coe and the 1972

:58:27. > :58:40.Andre De Grasse has shared a bronze medal and he gets one himself.

:58:41. > :58:42.He shared one of the World Championships.

:58:43. > :58:45.Now let's listen to the crowd reaction to Justin Gatlin.

:58:46. > :58:52.Well, a little more mixed, I would say, this time.

:58:53. > :58:55.Well, Gatlin - you heard Michael Johnson saying there -

:58:56. > :59:01.It didn't look as though he believed he could beat Bolt.

:59:02. > :59:06.After the semifinal, we thought, "That's it."

:59:07. > :59:09.For about 30 or 40 metres when Gatlin had gone out hard,

:59:10. > :59:12.as he always does, and Bolt was 1.5m behind and then...

:59:13. > :59:22.ANNOUNCER: The Olympic Champion, representing Jamaica...

:59:23. > :59:36.Well, it's almost as though he's waiting for the cheer!

:59:37. > :59:41.Usain Bolt steps up to take his seventh Olympic gold medal,

:59:42. > :59:49.his third, an unprecedented third gold medal in the 100m.

:59:50. > :59:52.And just to add another statistic, it was the 50th time he's

:59:53. > :00:03.And he stayed an awful long time afterwards, did all of the things

:00:04. > :00:06.he normally does with the world's media, signing autographs

:00:07. > :00:22.And this, a very familiar sight and a very familiar tune.

:00:23. > :01:22.Well, he could stop now, if he wanted to,

:01:23. > :01:28.and his place in history has been cemented, of course it has.

:01:29. > :01:30.He probably could have stopped after 2008 to be honest

:01:31. > :01:33.or 2009 or 2012 or 2015 but we're all delighted he's

:01:34. > :01:39.still going in 2016 and more to come from him here in Rio.

:01:40. > :01:46.For now, he can enjoy his seventh Olympic gold medal.

:01:47. > :01:49.Not an overall tactile rostrum, that one, is it?

:01:50. > :01:51.But well done, huge congratulations, of course, to Usain Bolt.

:01:52. > :01:55.An incredible achievement, incredible getting through that

:01:56. > :02:01.That was one of the strangest things I've witnessed for a while.

:02:02. > :02:03.It was and, you know, we saw Usain Bolt sitting

:02:04. > :02:05.there looking around going, "What's going on?"

:02:06. > :02:08.And he shook his head like "I'm not going to try and figure

:02:09. > :02:21.There was a booing and then a cheer in a most inappropriate place.

:02:22. > :02:26.Whatever you feel about someone, don't clap.

:02:27. > :02:39.It was delayed, but the women's discus is well and truly underway,

:02:40. > :02:44.and Sandra Perkovic has not had a very good expedition so far,

:02:45. > :02:57.The reigning Olympic Champion will be tested in this very

:02:58. > :02:59.department with this throw because she needs to

:03:00. > :03:07.This is the first of two pulls, so it's difficult to know exactly

:03:08. > :03:21.The pressure was on, and she delivered.

:03:22. > :03:26.Probably the longest throw we've seen in this first of two pulls.

:03:27. > :03:30.The British thrower is going in the second pool.

:03:31. > :03:32.We're looking forward to seeing how she gets on.

:03:33. > :03:42.The gold line is the autoqualifying of 62m.

:03:43. > :03:44.Any athlete who goes beyond that will advance

:03:45. > :03:47.That was modest by her own standards.

:03:48. > :03:49.The longest throw, saved it to the last round, and

:03:50. > :03:59.But another athlete of note, Denia Caballero, also on two fouls,

:04:00. > :04:03.beat Perkovic last year at the World Championships

:04:04. > :04:06.and is highly expected to qualify for the final, but in exactly

:04:07. > :04:15.the same position as Perkovic was before that throw.

:04:16. > :04:20.How does Caballero deal with that pressure?

:04:21. > :04:32.Both athletes in that round, where it could have gone oh

:04:33. > :04:39.It has dried off, mind, and it was very wet indeed.

:04:40. > :04:41.I'm sure that was part of the problem.

:04:42. > :04:45.I think Caballero will be one to watch, possibly,

:04:46. > :04:52.It was Perkovic four years ago, though, looking to defend.

:04:53. > :05:00.It's enough to advance to tomorrow's final.

:05:01. > :05:04.Well, I would say the stadium is a little over half full tonight.

:05:05. > :05:06.We slightly worried that the Monday evening session, you know,

:05:07. > :05:11.after the weekend's incredible nights, might not be as busy,

:05:12. > :05:15.but I think the rain also hasn't helped, has it?

:05:16. > :05:19.But they're out there and they've got an interest, of course,

:05:20. > :05:22.in the pole vault to come as well, with Brasilia.

:05:23. > :05:25.So hopefully the crowds will stay for the rest of the evening.

:05:26. > :05:28.They've seen Usain Bolt take his gold medal in that

:05:29. > :05:34.But let's relive another incredible moment from last night.

:05:35. > :05:37.We all thought we were here building up to Usain Bolt's third Olympic

:05:38. > :05:42.We knew there was going to be a fantastic 400m final.

:05:43. > :05:49.We weren't quite sure just how electric it would be.

:05:50. > :06:00.Kirani James will hunt them down too, and Wayde van Niekerk

:06:01. > :06:06.No-one outside him except for the roar of the crowd

:06:07. > :06:10.and LaShawn Merritt, LaShawn Merritt so close

:06:11. > :06:16.Matthew Hudson-Smith a long way back with the rest.

:06:17. > :06:22.Wayde van Niekerk has gone out very quickly.

:06:23. > :06:29.Three men and the gold medal is waiting for one but van Niekerk

:06:30. > :06:34.Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt tied up.

:06:35. > :06:37.Van Niekerk takes it, and it is a new world record,

:06:38. > :06:40.43.03, extraordinary, inside the Olympic Stadium!

:06:41. > :06:46.And Michael Johnson's record has gone!

:06:47. > :07:03.An incredible race, an incredible new world record for Wayde

:07:04. > :07:06.van Niekerk, who, um, who really blew this event epart,

:07:07. > :07:09.anyway, last year, running in the first 400m final in a major

:07:10. > :07:13.championship with three runners under 44 seconds,

:07:14. > :07:18.he went one better, and that was him getting his medal a little bit

:07:19. > :07:25.And has the phone stopped ringing now, Michael?

:07:26. > :07:28.Still a little bit of ringing and texting and all of that

:07:29. > :07:30.sort of thing but, um, you know, more and more people

:07:31. > :07:33.are wanting to hear more and more about how did he do it,

:07:34. > :07:36.which is what I'm more interested in talking about.

:07:37. > :07:37.Because it was such an impressive race.

:07:38. > :07:41.He did it by running through the first 200m in 20.5,

:07:42. > :07:45.I mean, just unbelievable pace and what was most important,

:07:46. > :07:48.as someone said, he broke the world record by running so fast

:07:49. > :07:53.He ran the world record by running faster in the first 200m and then

:07:54. > :08:01.Because what you do on the front end takes its pace on the back end.

:08:02. > :08:05.We're going to get back down to the track because it's

:08:06. > :08:08.the women's 400m hurdles heat, which will be underway

:08:09. > :08:11.for you, and Andrew Cotter and Colin Jackson are calling

:08:12. > :08:19.The real medal contenders will probably come in later heats,

:08:20. > :08:28.but I'm interesting to see how this prodigy goes.

:08:29. > :08:31.This was the first woman to retain a world title in this event,

:08:32. > :08:55.But Sydney McLaughlin, as I say, an extraordinary talent.

:08:56. > :08:59.Youngest US Olympic athlete since Munich in 1972.

:09:00. > :09:07.And if she's nervous at this stage, she's not showing it.

:09:08. > :09:09.Another youngster inside her in the Italian, 19, finished

:09:10. > :09:13.fourth in the recent World Championships,

:09:14. > :09:22.And we have Tracey from Jamaica in seven.

:09:23. > :09:28.We have Fontanive of Switzerland in three.

:09:29. > :09:30.Hejnova of the can Czech Republic in four.

:09:31. > :09:33.Troest from Denmark in six, Tracy from Jamaica in seven

:09:34. > :09:41.Three will go through automatically to the semifinals.

:09:42. > :09:43.Hejnova has been hampered by Achilles injuries

:09:44. > :09:54.Sydney McLaughlin, a steady start, looking towards Petra Fontanive

:09:55. > :10:04.We look now at Sydney McLaughlin, the 17-year-old, just turned 17,

:10:05. > :10:06.and now she's trying to trace down Hejnova,

:10:07. > :10:10.who has picked up pace and is looking strong.

:10:11. > :10:15.Folorunso is trying to get on terms with McLaughlin and

:10:16. > :10:22.Folorunso passes her, the 19-year-old and 17-year-old.

:10:23. > :10:32.A good finish too, but it's the Jamaican, Ristananna Tracey,

:10:33. > :10:38.Hejnova over the line, Folorunso third and McLaughlin

:10:39. > :10:45.She promised so much after her efforts at the US trials,

:10:46. > :10:53.Sometimes that does happen for the American athletes on a world

:10:54. > :10:56.stage who have delivered so much domestically,

:10:57. > :10:59.and a quizzical look on her face.

:11:00. > :11:01.It just wasn't happening for her in the final 100m.

:11:02. > :11:06.Remember just getting here was a huge challenge

:11:07. > :11:12.Once she's arrived, lots of things will change around you,

:11:13. > :11:16.of course, from the conditions to the circumstances you live

:11:17. > :11:20.in, so you've got to get used to it and that comes with maturity.

:11:21. > :11:23.As a 17-year-old, she's done very well to be part of this US team,

:11:24. > :11:25.and no doubt she'll gain so much experience from it.

:11:26. > :11:29.She ran a fast 300m hurdles recently, and now she's got

:11:30. > :11:31.to reassess her fitness levels and what she's

:11:32. > :11:40.And of course, the Jamaican taking the victory there in quite

:11:41. > :11:51.You look at McLaughlin on the outside.

:11:52. > :11:55.She was outstanding in the trials, but it's a different thing coming

:11:56. > :11:59.You've really got to learn how things work in the Olympic Games,

:12:00. > :12:13.Queueing up for basic stuff like your food,

:12:14. > :12:18.etc, etc, going to the warm-up track.

:12:19. > :12:20.All these things can upset your rhythm, especially

:12:21. > :12:47.We already clearly know she's talented.

:12:48. > :12:50.I'm impressed by Zuzana Hejnova, she has some experience

:12:51. > :12:52.and coming back to form with injuries behind her, perhaps.

:12:53. > :12:55.Ristananna Tracey took the win, and Folorunso came through to take

:12:56. > :12:59.The pole vault was a restart in the end, dry conditions now.

:13:00. > :13:01.Oh, came down on that, didn't he?

:13:02. > :13:06.Oh, they didn't really keep the mat very dry, I think, during...

:13:07. > :13:09.The athletes were allowed to go indoors, but the mat was left out

:13:10. > :13:12.in the elements, as the Chinese athlete has just found out.

:13:13. > :13:14.Yeah, but, unfortunately he came down on that.

:13:15. > :13:17.But his troubles are only just beginning as he landed in, um,

:13:18. > :13:20.a bit of a slap in the face when you've just knocked the bar

:13:21. > :13:22.off, when you're just thinking it can't get any worse...

:13:23. > :13:40.Shawn Barber is expecting to make light work of this, but no.

:13:41. > :13:49.The athletes are just finding their feet again

:13:50. > :13:53.I spoke to Steve Hooker earlier and he said the athlete

:13:54. > :13:56.who is best at waiting around - and there's only one guy who does

:13:57. > :13:59.that week in, week out, and that's Renaud Lavillenie,

:14:00. > :14:03.because he comes in so high - he's opted to pass at this height -

:14:04. > :14:13.Barber goes back ready to take a second attempt in a while.

:14:14. > :14:17.Well, we said that one of the events which is going to be hampered most

:14:18. > :14:20.by the weather is the pole vault and, um, Xue there had

:14:21. > :14:23.It wasn't that the pole slipped at either end,

:14:24. > :14:27.You said you know what this feels like.

:14:28. > :14:32.I took part in a heptathlon in the high jump, and this pool

:14:33. > :14:36.of water just gathered on the high jump bed, and I landed in it,

:14:37. > :14:51.He'll find it funny in about a week, but right now he's definitely livid.

:14:52. > :14:56.It's also, you know, keeping warm after that is a real problem,

:14:57. > :14:59.you know, getting your clothes dry - that's not going to dry.

:15:00. > :15:02.He'll have to put on a tracksuit, and that's really the issue here.

:15:03. > :15:06.If he'd stayed on the bar, he might have found it funnier.

:15:07. > :15:12.Shawnacy Barbar looked like a gymnast when he came over

:15:13. > :15:14.the bar, and we thought it was impressive,

:15:15. > :15:21.We don't get marks for execution in the pole vault.

:15:22. > :15:27.They're coming thick and fast on the track tonight because we're

:15:28. > :15:30.trying to catch up with events that were delayed because of the weather.

:15:31. > :15:42.Steve Cram, it's heat two of the women's 400m hurdles.

:15:43. > :15:44.This young lady here, Jackie Baumann of Germany,

:15:45. > :15:46.daughter of Dieter Baumann, Olympic 5,000m champion in 1992.

:15:47. > :15:48.His daughter says she's proud of her dad, but she's

:15:49. > :16:00.He did end his career with a drug suspension,

:16:01. > :16:04.I think, towards the end of his career anyway.

:16:05. > :16:08.And question marks about this young lady here.

:16:09. > :16:10.Would have probably been - or should be one of the contenders

:16:11. > :16:12.for this title here, but real question marks

:16:13. > :16:18.as to whether she was actually going to compete.

:16:19. > :16:23.Her coach said after she missed the trials with a foot injury,

:16:24. > :16:30.She had to go through a fitness test with the Jamaican team.

:16:31. > :16:32.She had a medical exemption from the trials.

:16:33. > :16:38.And we weren't sure if she was going to be,

:16:39. > :16:40.but she's lining up, the 22-year-old, who has run sub-54

:16:41. > :16:57.this year but has not raced for a while.

:16:58. > :16:58.We've got Chanice Chase, Sparkle McKnight,

:16:59. > :17:00.Janieve Russell, Jackie Baumann, Drita Islami, Grace Claxton, Joanna,

:17:01. > :17:18.Another youngster, 20 years of age. 320-year-olds in this race. -- three

:17:19. > :17:20.20-year-olds in this race. Chanice Chase, 22 herself,

:17:21. > :17:22.Canadian who can also - Just to reiterate, it's first three

:17:23. > :17:28.and the six fastest losers through to the semifinals and,

:17:29. > :17:34.of course, Child will be eagerly The winner of the silver medal at

:17:35. > :17:52.the Europeans just recently. So what sort of shape

:17:53. > :18:12.is Russell in here? I almost thought Russell had got a

:18:13. > :18:19.false start, I think it was just McKnight got away incredibly slowly

:18:20. > :18:29.out of the box. Bell in lane eight started well. Chase of Canada doing

:18:30. > :18:40.that, chasing down Russell, so far so good for Rosol.

:18:41. > :18:42.Now having gone past, Bowman has got a little bit

:18:43. > :18:44.of daylight between her and Claxton there.

:18:45. > :18:50.Chased awful over that particular hurdle, and she's

:18:51. > :18:57.And indeed, Chase is gone down there.

:18:58. > :19:18.That wasn't very good, was it? Really poor race for Chase there.

:19:19. > :19:20.Never really looked like she was in it, was a long way coming down the

:19:21. > :19:22.home straight. Never really looked

:19:23. > :19:24.like it was there. I'm not sure what to

:19:25. > :19:26.make of Russell. It looked like it was

:19:27. > :19:28.OK for the first 200. It's really interesting to see that

:19:29. > :19:34.out of all of the women here. Let's see what happened

:19:35. > :19:39.to the Canadian. Chase is way too close

:19:40. > :19:42.to the barrier, and because you have that sense of fatigue again,

:19:43. > :19:45.of course, when you clip the hurdle like that because you're already

:19:46. > :19:47.exhausted, it is just... But as you said, Steve, there

:19:48. > :19:53.was a lot going on in this race. And I think that all of the women

:19:54. > :19:56.were trying to find their rhythm and get into the groove of the race,

:19:57. > :20:00.and I don't think that any of them On some stages they would come

:20:01. > :20:03.through, and other places -- at some stages they were

:20:04. > :20:06.comfortable. I was looking at how she was going

:20:07. > :20:20.to do her change style. From right leg to left leg,

:20:21. > :20:22.and even then it was inconsistent You can see that she's

:20:23. > :20:26.still in the lead here, but I'm pretty sure that once they get these

:20:27. > :20:30.early rounds out of the way. Remember I said this

:20:31. > :20:31.about the high hurdles. The guys need to have the clear blow

:20:32. > :20:36.out of the system so they can settle Colin, statestician Mark Butler

:20:37. > :20:41.saying that Chase didn't Games, hitting the hurdle

:20:42. > :20:50.and falling badly on that occasion, so that's something that she's

:20:51. > :20:52.good to eradicate. she's not even getting

:20:53. > :20:55.over the hurdles. Anyway, Russell looking

:20:56. > :20:57.at the clock and looks 56.13 in second place,

:20:58. > :21:01.as Linkovitch took the win. It was Claxton who got

:21:02. > :21:15.ahead of Belle there. Those three qualified by rights, so

:21:16. > :21:22.she will have to wait. This is Sam Kendricks

:21:23. > :21:27.in the pole vault. She was the most impressive in

:21:28. > :21:31.qualification. Oh, that's very competent indeed,

:21:32. > :21:34.and just as he did in qualification he's looked the best

:21:35. > :21:43.so far at least. The nation have dominated this

:21:44. > :21:57.in the past, and won it Not quite as impressive as the

:21:58. > :22:14.American. European indoor bronze medal

:22:15. > :22:22.last year, and outdoor at the World Championships

:22:23. > :22:26.last year. A consistent

:22:27. > :22:32.championships performer. Still wet that mat, though, and it's

:22:33. > :22:37.going to be tough to stay dry. Steve Hooper was also saying -

:22:38. > :22:40.look at Xue of China who saw Hooker was saying about

:22:41. > :22:56.the logistics in the pole Almost like a caddie would keep

:22:57. > :23:14.the bag and the umbrella at this, this is nearly

:23:15. > :23:19.horribly wrong. He's got to try to get

:23:20. > :23:21.feet first and turn. Sean Barber, World

:23:22. > :23:34.Champion here from 2015. That was a much better

:23:35. > :23:47.effort from the Canadian. Maybe not looking quite

:23:48. > :23:56.as sharp there as last year, and in many ways, forget what's gone

:23:57. > :24:01.on before the champs. It's about who deals

:24:02. > :24:10.with the pressure. It's going to run late, but over the

:24:11. > :24:13.next hour or so a new champion will be crowned. Second time of asking

:24:14. > :24:15.for Shawn Barber. We're just getting ready

:24:16. > :24:17.of the third of the heats in the women's 400 metres hurdles,

:24:18. > :24:21.but interesting news that we've been told that going back to the men's

:24:22. > :24:24.110 metres hurdles, and the second heat was run in dreadful conditions

:24:25. > :24:27.and the other one was late. But we are told that those

:24:28. > :24:30.who didn't make it automatically through from the first two heats,

:24:31. > :24:33.they're going to give them another run at 11:15 to make it

:24:34. > :24:35.through as fastest losers. Yeah, I've heard of athletes

:24:36. > :24:41.being given the chance to come back, And I remember, I can't remember

:24:42. > :24:51.the name of the Irish runner in Munich, and the camera got

:24:52. > :24:54.in the way, I think. But the interesting one, you'll do

:24:55. > :24:56.the 400 metres hurdles now. We'll come back to it,

:24:57. > :24:59.because Deuce Carter was disqualified, and I don't know

:25:00. > :25:03.if he'll be allowed to run again. So that is supposed to go

:25:04. > :25:09.at 11:15 our time, so they're Look out here for Ashley Spencer

:25:10. > :25:15.and Lea Sprunger there There is Ashley Spencer,

:25:16. > :25:24.took silver at the world indoors Ran both the 400 metres and 400

:25:25. > :25:30.metres hurdles there. Sprunger on the inside for

:25:31. > :25:33.Switzerland. Not perhaps the strongest of the

:25:34. > :25:54.heats. But we will look out

:25:55. > :25:56.for Ashley Spencer. Made the final of the 400 flat

:25:57. > :25:59.at the US trials but couldn't But certainly good prospects over

:26:00. > :26:08.the hurdles, although the US athletes, perhaps not

:26:09. > :26:10.looking that strong so far. And Sprunger from the inside has

:26:11. > :26:33.a little bit to do at the moment Springer on the inside. Spencer and

:26:34. > :26:41.Nugent. The Ukrainian athlete is involved as well. Springer tiring on

:26:42. > :26:45.the inside. The American, Ashley Spencer, clear with Leo Nugent. They

:26:46. > :26:49.are the first two in the battle for the automatic place. But the

:26:50. > :27:01.Ukrainian athlete is going to get it.

:27:02. > :27:02.Perhaps wasn't the strongest of the heats.

:27:03. > :27:06.I think that that is fair enough to say but it was a fairly straight

:27:07. > :27:08.forward win for Ashley Spencer and Lea Nugent going

:27:09. > :27:13.Ashley Spencer, you can tell that she's a lady who has a lot of speed,

:27:14. > :27:17.Sneaks over the barriers and if I'm honest, Andrew, when she goes

:27:18. > :27:21.to each and every one of the hurdles I I slightly shut my eyes

:27:22. > :27:23.because if she clips one, it will be messy.

:27:24. > :27:25.Look how she just literally gets over this hurdle now.

:27:26. > :27:35.And one tiny mistake at this level when you have the fatigue factor in,

:27:36. > :27:41.and unfortunately for her, she will hit the deck.

:27:42. > :27:46.Let's keep out fingers crossed that she sites the barriers

:27:47. > :27:50.well, because we don't want to see any more mess on the track.

:27:51. > :27:54.Salvaged the second and he's gone clear.

:27:55. > :27:58.Oh, we're rooting for this young man.

:27:59. > :28:02.He's had a bit of a rough time already in this early stage

:28:03. > :28:15.Three fouls and you're out, just to remind you.

:28:16. > :28:20.He was chuffed with that, as he should be.

:28:21. > :28:30.No real major championships honours, but he will continue

:28:31. > :28:46.I can't tell you the collective applause and delight from the studio

:28:47. > :28:52.Let's just clarify what's happened with the earlier heats

:28:53. > :28:57.The first two were run in torrential rain, so the four slowest runners

:28:58. > :29:01.in either race who haven't qualified automatically will go into a race

:29:02. > :29:05.together, and it will be up to them to get the times to become one

:29:06. > :29:16.However, each of the races had somebody who first

:29:17. > :29:26.And Carter was disqualified because he touched the hurdle.

:29:27. > :29:38.Let's have a little look at Carter and see why he was DQed earlier on.

:29:39. > :29:41.He was one of the athletes disgusted with the weather and he didn't seem

:29:42. > :29:45.Completely, and have to say, it does seem quite fair.

:29:46. > :29:48.But let's have a look at where he actually got this DQ

:29:49. > :29:50.because I didn't notice it when we were watching

:29:51. > :29:55.I think that it was the previous hurdle to that.

:29:56. > :29:58.But the thing is, I don't see where he can be DQed.

:29:59. > :30:01.He hit the hurdle, just a genuine technical error on his behalf.

:30:02. > :30:03.I'm assuming that that is the reason why they're

:30:04. > :30:07.They're rerunning it because of the error

:30:08. > :30:12.This is the very reason that they're rerunning it because the rain

:30:13. > :30:14.affected his ability to clear the hurdle the way

:30:15. > :30:17.And therefore he should be reinstated.

:30:18. > :30:20.There's no reason to disqualify him and not allow him to come

:30:21. > :30:24.Absolutely, but you just saw there on the piece of footage there.

:30:25. > :30:28.He seemed to go into the other lane and whether they've deemed that

:30:29. > :30:32.But it's because of the weather, again.

:30:33. > :30:36.So I just don't see how they cannot allow him back in given that

:30:37. > :30:38.anything that happened here, presumably, happened

:30:39. > :30:41.because of the weather and that is why it is the very

:30:42. > :30:45.reason that they're having the rerun and to not allow him

:30:46. > :30:54.If you think about it, they saw the rain.

:30:55. > :30:59.They could have easily delayed the start of the competition by 30

:31:00. > :31:03.minutes to give everyone a fair opportunity.

:31:04. > :31:06.Instead, we're going on half an hour extra at the end to accommodate

:31:07. > :31:11.At the moment, there will be six of them who are looking

:31:12. > :31:13.for the time to get them through as fastest losers.

:31:14. > :31:17.I've never experienced it at a major championships before,

:31:18. > :31:19.but they have another role of the dice.

:31:20. > :31:27.You don't get that very often in an Olympic Games in heats?

:31:28. > :31:30.And I would wonder, what will the other athletes think?

:31:31. > :31:33.The other athletes who have qualified on time, because do these

:31:34. > :31:35.athletes have the ability to sur plant some of those athletes

:31:36. > :31:47.Right, but those athletes are going to say - wait a minute,

:31:48. > :31:54.But you had a chance to run in the drier weather,

:31:55. > :32:01.In a normal race, with eight athletes in there and at the time

:32:02. > :32:04.And now the athletes are coming back in the second race

:32:05. > :32:08.And they also know what they have to do.

:32:09. > :32:10.The slightly worrying thing is the precedent that it sets

:32:11. > :32:12.and the weather changes and you'll get that again

:32:13. > :32:16.Hopefully it gets the competition committee for the IAAF saying

:32:17. > :32:19.that we need a hard and fast rule for when it is raining and this

:32:20. > :32:22.is what we do and you actually make a decision saying that they're

:32:23. > :32:25.probably doing this because they sat there on it for so long

:32:26. > :32:28.when we were all saying - make a decision, go or don't go.

:32:29. > :32:32.Do you think that this is perhaps, you know, the best way that they can

:32:33. > :32:35.make out of what was really a mess, that they feel that they should have

:32:36. > :32:38.perhaps suspended the competition a little bit earlier and they've

:32:39. > :32:40.obviously had protestations from athletes and the kind

:32:41. > :32:42.of fudging it up a little bit now because they're

:32:43. > :32:54.You know, right at the beginning, I tried to look at the winning times

:32:55. > :32:56.and we realised that the women's times were virtually identical

:32:57. > :32:59.and we all discussed this and it was more about a state

:33:00. > :33:01.of mind more than conditions in that sense.

:33:02. > :33:04.So I think you know, that it was fair as it has.

:33:05. > :33:06.And perhaps should stay the same because it will cause problems,

:33:07. > :33:21.some of the athletes who have gone through.

:33:22. > :33:24.They'll be waiting to see if they've gone through as fastest losers

:33:25. > :33:27.or not so it makes it a really messy situation for everybody involved.

:33:28. > :33:39.It's the fourth heat of the women's 400 metres hurdles.

:33:40. > :33:45.And news of a disqualification from the previous heat.

:33:46. > :33:48.We'll bring you up to date with that because it does affect qualifiers

:33:49. > :33:55.and here we've got a pretty good heat here.

:33:56. > :34:15.The European champion coming in in good form here.

:34:16. > :34:17.Sub-54 seconds and starting to rediscover some

:34:18. > :34:31.There she is and the Dane has definitely built up a big lead here.

:34:32. > :34:35.Belilliele of Trinidad Tobago there.

:34:36. > :34:43.She's got this all to herself at the moment and needs

:34:44. > :34:45.to negotiate the last two places fairly safely herself.

:34:46. > :35:07.No doubt at all about this young lady here.

:35:08. > :35:09.That was fairly easy and straight forward for her.

:35:10. > :35:25.Got into a good rhythm and was able to back off a little bit in the ol

:35:26. > :35:26.straight over the last flight.

:35:27. > :35:31.She really is rounding in form in the right time?

:35:32. > :35:33.Yeah, I've watched her at the European Championships take

:35:34. > :35:37.What she's demonstrating is to be confident in what your abilities

:35:38. > :35:40.Look how she strides out so comfortably.

:35:41. > :35:47.She's not even concerned where the hurdle it will be.

:35:48. > :35:51.She knows she'll be able to take it on whatever leg and she works

:35:52. > :35:53.hard into every single one of the barriers.

:35:54. > :35:54.Even when she's tired, she doesn't back off.

:35:55. > :35:57.She's confident wherever the hurdle lands, she'll take it.

:35:58. > :35:59.Whatever stride is there before, she'll take it cleanly and that

:36:00. > :36:02.always sets us up beautifully to run into the barrier.

:36:03. > :36:04.Don't be shocked by the time of 55.2.

:36:05. > :36:06.She is absolutely walking this as she crosses this line.

:36:07. > :36:08.And I'm thinking already, we're looking at somebody

:36:09. > :36:11.who is most like going to go under 54 seconds in the later rounds.

:36:12. > :36:13.She nipped under 53 last year.

:36:14. > :36:18.Just missed out on a medal at the World Championships

:36:19. > :36:21.but looking very, very good here at the moment.

:36:22. > :36:24.Actually, if you were with us this morn, the men's 400 metres hurdles,

:36:25. > :36:31.Roger went through at the sixth fastest loser because there

:36:32. > :36:33.was a disqualification in the very last heat of the men's

:36:34. > :36:46.The athlete, forgive me, his name escapes me but Seb Roger

:36:47. > :36:48.did go through to the semifinal of the men's 400 metres hurdles

:36:49. > :36:52.and will be hoping that Amy Child can do the same in another

:36:53. > :37:12.Annekewicz did get on the line there.

:37:13. > :37:14.But Pedroso's time looking good for fastest loser spot.

:37:15. > :37:16.And before that, heat three and the interesting news

:37:17. > :37:19.from there was that Nugent seemed to be an automatic qualifier.

:37:20. > :37:22.A trail leg violation around the barrier rather than over so

:37:23. > :37:26.Sydney McLaughlin, the talented young American is still in one

:37:27. > :37:28.of the fastest loser positions at the moment.

:37:29. > :37:32.Which just shows you actually that the heats have been.

:37:33. > :37:34.That Sydney McLaughlin is in a fastest loser position

:37:35. > :37:37.because she was about three and a half seconds outside her

:37:38. > :37:45.Not been the highest quality so far, have they?

:37:46. > :37:48.Well, we've been all debating what's been going on down there.

:37:49. > :37:51.Is it because of the delay and the women have spent a lot

:37:52. > :37:54.of time warming up and completely cooled down and a little

:37:55. > :37:57.Because this is a technical event and when you hold your technical

:37:58. > :38:00.there, you want to get out there and get it done.

:38:01. > :38:03.And I think that a that has perhaps irritated and set a little bit

:38:04. > :38:13.Again it is all about mind set in the circumstances and situations.

:38:14. > :38:15.Mohammed there, one of the fastest in the competition, 52.88.

:38:16. > :38:19.But I want to talk to you about the heat after that because Doyle

:38:20. > :38:22.of, Eilidh Doyle of Great Britain has won some of the fastest times

:38:23. > :38:27.She seems to be in the shape of her life?

:38:28. > :38:30.She is in the shape of her life, no doubt about it.

:38:31. > :38:33.And even her foot speed and how quick she can run has changed

:38:34. > :38:36.What we're looking at now is the Diamond League victory

:38:37. > :38:39.in Monaco and she was aggressive in the early part of the stages

:38:40. > :38:45.and what she wanted to do was leak at the stride pattern now.

:38:46. > :38:47.Counting the strides as we go into the barrier and it

:38:48. > :38:50.The 18 strike pattern, which we don't want to see.

:38:51. > :38:56.We wanted to see her come home on 70s.

:38:57. > :38:58.I know she's been working hard with her coach on getting this

:38:59. > :39:02.They've changed it a little bit for the competitions now so that

:39:03. > :39:04.she'll keep her cadence going all the way.

:39:05. > :39:08.She'll drop down to there a little bit earlier than before

:39:09. > :39:11.but here again in London, this will demonstrate it before.

:39:12. > :39:14.In Monaco when she was in full flight there, she was fine

:39:15. > :39:20.Here, when she can be really aggressive and go hard at it,

:39:21. > :39:23.look at that, crashes out and saps all of the energy out of her legs

:39:24. > :39:26.in both the take-off and the landing phase and it causes her to go

:39:27. > :39:31.And this genuinely could be the difference between her

:39:32. > :39:34.and if she goes through successfully with the rounds.

:39:35. > :39:55.I was speaking to Sally Gunnell about Eilidh Doyle saying,

:39:56. > :40:03.She has faith that she can go about 53.7 if she nails that final

:40:04. > :40:08.I mean, Michael, you know yourself exactly what it is like and how

:40:09. > :40:10.tired your legs are in the final 20 metres.

:40:11. > :40:13.Stay with us, one more heat before her heat and there Muhammad

:40:14. > :40:17.She is by far and away the quickest this here.

:40:18. > :40:20.Perhaps starting to see the best of her because she is

:40:21. > :40:23.She missed most of 2014 with a virus and hampered last

:40:24. > :40:32.Lauren Wells of Australia going in there.

:40:33. > :40:38.The three strongest go through automatically.

:40:39. > :40:42.So if you can run close to your best, if you're a decent

:40:43. > :40:45.athlete, you might have a chance of going through as one

:40:46. > :40:55.The penultimate heat in the first round.

:40:56. > :40:59.And Muhammad here cruising past Barbosa of Portugal and Muhammad

:41:00. > :41:01.really with an astounding hurdler and she's shown that this year.

:41:02. > :41:12.Muhammad looking strong at the moment.

:41:13. > :41:14.Going well is Lauren Wells of Australia.

:41:15. > :41:17.And Muhammad, easy and comfortable, out in front at the moment but it's

:41:18. > :41:21.And a little stumble and stutter there.

:41:22. > :41:41.And a little stumble and stutter there.

:41:42. > :41:46.It will be Muhammad to get the victory.

:41:47. > :41:48.And Moncar and Wells into there with a very close one

:41:49. > :42:12.Again, that is very, very easy for Muhammad.

:42:13. > :42:15.She's run 52.88 this season and the times have been pretty

:42:16. > :42:17.slow there but Muhammad, a class apart on this one.

:42:18. > :42:20.Yes, absolutely and you know when you've looked at someone under

:42:21. > :42:23.53, you scrutinise how they do that but you can see that she's

:42:24. > :42:27.So relaxed in the final barrier and knows the event very well indeed

:42:28. > :42:30.and is very confident in every angle of this event.

:42:31. > :42:39.Comfortable in the change there when she goes around

:42:40. > :42:41.the corner and coming home here in a lovely,

:42:42. > :42:45.She is looking at the screen there and just thinking -

:42:46. > :42:48.well, I've got another round to do soon enough but let me

:42:49. > :42:51.And she certainly managed to do that.

:42:52. > :42:53.So Muhammad through with Moncalm and Titimets there given the place

:42:54. > :43:05.ahead of Lauren Wells but I think that Wells might go through.

:43:06. > :43:08.So I can well imagine that this is causing debate at home

:43:09. > :43:12.about the unprecedented decision to run another race post

:43:13. > :43:18.all of the events scheduled for this evening to see if there can be any

:43:19. > :43:21.more fastest losers in the 110 metres hurdles because of the rain

:43:22. > :43:25.and Di Green on Twitter said, "The track looks like it would drain

:43:26. > :43:28.on the outside and that would favour the athletes on the outer lanes".

:43:29. > :43:31.I guess he's saying it is not literally a level playing field.

:43:32. > :43:34.Even though it was raining for everybody, it was raining harder

:43:35. > :43:48.I don't know, Deuce Carter, who expressed some...

:43:49. > :43:51.Visual distress at the beginning of the race, he actually

:43:52. > :43:55.And all of the problems for him were...

:43:56. > :44:02.But I don't really see how the lanes could be an issue...

:44:03. > :44:05.have a problem there in lane eight and nine.

:44:06. > :44:19.Ronnie Ash, he had a few problems out there.

:44:20. > :44:23.The problems were on the outside of the track, rather

:44:24. > :44:31.We're looking at about 13.64, 13.62 and 13.63 for the athletes there.

:44:32. > :44:34.That's the kind of time they'd have to get to get themselves up there.

:44:35. > :44:37.And it wouldn't surprise me if everybody in that field ran under

:44:38. > :44:39.those times because they've got another race under their belt

:44:40. > :44:44.and that makes a huge difference again in high hurdles.

:44:45. > :44:47.You get used to the track and the circumstances

:44:48. > :44:49.of the situation and your warm-up better.

:44:50. > :44:52.You won't have the interruptions and you talk about it trying

:44:53. > :44:54.to be a fair playing field and fortunately,

:44:55. > :44:59.it's definitely not going to be a fair playing field.

:45:00. > :45:03.Let's get back on to the 400 metres hurdles because Child

:45:04. > :45:08.They've not been the most scintillating of heats so far

:45:09. > :45:13.And that is probably a reflection of perhaps where the world

:45:14. > :45:17.Is this an opportunity for Eilidh Doyle in this event?

:45:18. > :45:23.I think she's ranked fifth in the world.

:45:24. > :45:29.She's progressed so nicely in the last few years.

:45:30. > :45:31.I think that she came of age, you know those nights

:45:32. > :45:35.that we witnessed her in Zurich, the European Championships,

:45:36. > :45:37.the Commonwealth Games where she finished second but she's

:45:38. > :45:43.She's done really well and made all of the changes.

:45:44. > :45:45.She's a better athlete this year, I would say.

:45:46. > :45:48.And she knows what she's got to a she just needs to execute

:45:49. > :45:50.and get those small, the tiniest, tiniest errors that

:45:51. > :45:53.have been creeping into those last few races out of her system.

:45:54. > :46:02.She has a genuine opportunity to sneak a medal there.

:46:03. > :46:08.Is this one of the most difficult events to pick a clear winner?

:46:09. > :46:15.Is it one of the most open events? No.

:46:16. > :46:18.I think in the USA, with the sub-53 block there.

:46:19. > :46:25.Sydney McLaughlin hasn't made it through necessarily yet.

:46:26. > :46:29.Also further to the point about Eilidh Doyle being ranked

:46:30. > :46:32.number five, two of the people ranked ahead of her are not here.

:46:33. > :46:36.That's the point that I was going to make to you earlier

:46:37. > :46:38.about Sydney McLaughlin, who comes through the brutal American trials

:46:39. > :46:41.and leaves behind two American athletes who were above her

:46:42. > :46:43.in the world rankings, and her experience

:46:44. > :46:47.has shown here, hasn't it, in that heat?

:46:48. > :46:53.But you could also make the argument as well that the US championships

:46:54. > :46:56.is a high-pressure event, and if you can't get it done

:46:57. > :46:59.there, what's to say that you could get it done here?

:47:00. > :47:01.Well, we shall see if Sydney McLaughlin makes it

:47:02. > :47:03.through, because at the moment she's one of the fastest losers,

:47:04. > :47:06.and we don't want Child to be in that position.

:47:07. > :47:09.Top three in each heat, and the next six fastest to the semifinals.

:47:10. > :47:19.If it goes wrong at this stage, then something pretty horrendous

:47:20. > :47:21.has happened, so, yeah, this should be straightforward

:47:22. > :47:33.There will always be nerves, but she's hugely

:47:34. > :47:38.The last two World Championships in the final, fifth and six and that

:47:39. > :47:41.You know first of all, getting through the rounds.

:47:42. > :47:43.You negotiate that as smoothly as you possibly can.

:47:44. > :47:45.And let's hope that she does that here.

:47:46. > :47:48.Just quick confirmation of the result from the previous heat.

:47:49. > :47:52.Muhammad winning it comfortably, and Titimets going through

:47:53. > :47:54.and Montcalm, and that will be quick enough for Lauren Wells

:47:55. > :48:10.56.5 for a fastest loser spot at the moment.

:48:11. > :48:12.If you're not in the top three here...

:48:13. > :48:14.She has one or two interesting athletes against her here.

:48:15. > :48:16.Certainly one or two I haven't seen too much of.

:48:17. > :48:19.Right on the inside on lane one, Sage Watson for Canada,

:48:20. > :48:38.Kubokura of Japan, Doyle in six, Scott in seven and Caravelli

:48:39. > :48:48.She's run against some of those on many occasion,

:48:49. > :49:00.Sage Watson, 22, second in the Canadian championships.

:49:01. > :49:06.But, as I said, big progression this year.

:49:07. > :49:12.She's run a new personal best this season, Watson.

:49:13. > :49:19.Eilidh Doyle has decent flat speed as well at 400m.

:49:20. > :49:24.Just need to get the technique and the stride pattern sorted out.

:49:25. > :49:26.We'll get Colin to analyse it afterwards.

:49:27. > :49:35.So many times we've said this in the hurdles.

:49:36. > :49:38.We can ease down as we saw Peterson do once you're over

:49:39. > :49:47.You've got to keep your rhythm right before that.

:49:48. > :49:51.Last heat of the first round of the women's 400m hurdles.

:49:52. > :49:55.So Eilidh Doyle in sixth looking for a good safe, solid run here.

:49:56. > :49:58.Sage Watson started quickly and rises first but Eilidh Doyle

:49:59. > :50:02.also starleted pretty quickly and solidly.

:50:03. > :50:04.Caravelli going well for Italy on the outside.

:50:05. > :50:07.Top three will qualify and they're the three who are

:50:08. > :50:19.Watson on the inside, Canada going well.

:50:20. > :50:23.Still leading at the moment just from the Canadian.

:50:24. > :50:26.Watson and Caravelli in the two other qualifying spots at the moment

:50:27. > :50:28.but Eilidh Doyle is coming into the home straight here well

:50:29. > :50:32.And she can start to just concentrate on these

:50:33. > :50:38.Sage Watson almost high jumped that flight there and Eilidh just

:50:39. > :50:46.checking into the last one and gets the strike pattern right

:50:47. > :50:49.and now she can ease back a tad, but that's a good,

:50:50. > :50:52.solid run, one of the quicker races there.

:50:53. > :50:53.Watson ran well, also right on the inside.

:50:54. > :50:56.No problems at all, a sigh of relief for everybody.

:50:57. > :51:00.You just want to get this out of the way, move into the semifinal.

:51:01. > :51:03.She's one of the winners so that will stand her in good stead and,

:51:04. > :51:11.um, as I said, Sage Watson there, lane one, negotiated pretty well.

:51:12. > :51:14.And we'll get Colin to cast his eye over her.

:51:15. > :51:15.What about Eilidh first, Colin?

:51:16. > :51:18.I know the stride pattern she was trying to work on today

:51:19. > :51:29.We need to get her to focus on that and push herself when it really

:51:30. > :51:31.matters. She stuttered into that one

:51:32. > :51:33.because she's making adjustments all the way round and in this stride

:51:34. > :51:36.pattern, she's working on 17s. We want her to come home in 17

:51:37. > :51:41.but she throws in an extra, makes it an 18 and she has

:51:42. > :51:45.to work it in. In her mind, I think she'll go,

:51:46. > :51:50."I need to break up that," and when this pressure is on,

:51:51. > :51:54.she may do that. You can never, ever,

:51:55. > :51:58.ever dispute Eilidh's commitment over the beginning parts

:51:59. > :52:00.of the race. She's really good and competent over

:52:01. > :52:03.this section and she's got to try 15 She'll be psyched in the hurdle

:52:04. > :52:15.and deciding she needs to change She is coming round this bend,

:52:16. > :52:25.taking it with her right leg. Now she's doing 16 strides

:52:26. > :52:27.and alternating. This one, again, should be a 16,

:52:28. > :52:31.but she threw in a 17 there early which is not what she really wanted

:52:32. > :52:35.to do, but she decides now to settle into the race and just bring it home

:52:36. > :52:39.in a 17-stride pattern, taking it on the right leg

:52:40. > :52:42.all the way, but then the adjustment happens again,

:52:43. > :52:44.little shake, trots over to an 18. There could be lots of

:52:45. > :52:46.reasons for that, Steve. One could be that she's switching

:52:47. > :52:49.down and cruising and she's happy with the result and that

:52:50. > :52:51.will be absolutely fine. But next race on, we

:52:52. > :52:58.need her to push on. Can you describe it from your

:52:59. > :53:07.perspective? Yeah, I mean, it was comfortable

:53:08. > :53:10.but not a great race. A couple of, like, stutters

:53:11. > :53:12.into the hurdles but it's You want to try and conserve as much

:53:13. > :53:18.energy as possible, but you can't take the foot off the gas

:53:19. > :53:21.because you've got to get your I'm comfortably through

:53:22. > :53:25.to the next round. Steve Cram said it was like

:53:26. > :53:28.a sigh of relief to get You're sitting in the village

:53:29. > :53:31.watching everybody compete and you want to get it out

:53:32. > :53:34.of the way. You can step it up for

:53:35. > :53:43.the semis and the final. What stride pattern

:53:44. > :53:44.are you working to? I'm going back to my normal

:53:45. > :53:47.which is 15s to five, 16s to seven and then 17s home

:53:48. > :53:50.and that's a good solid pattern. You talk about that PB,

:53:51. > :54:01.and it's been such a stellar season for you to this point,

:54:02. > :54:04.you must be coming in with confidence high and dare

:54:05. > :54:06.we say medal hopes high? I want to go out there and give

:54:07. > :54:11.a good performance and just come off the track having

:54:12. > :54:12.given it everything. If I finish 12th or the podium,

:54:13. > :54:16.I just want to make sure Well done on negotiating

:54:17. > :54:18.the first round. A happy Eilidh Doyle

:54:19. > :54:27.is through to the semifinal, winning her heat with

:54:28. > :54:32.something to spare. Sage Watson may be

:54:33. > :54:40.a talent going forward. And it was Kolesnychenko who came

:54:41. > :54:49.third with a good finish there. Jade Lally, here at the Olympic

:54:50. > :55:01.Games, first throw of Group B. Commonwealth bronze-medallist in the

:55:02. > :55:04.qualifying round. Oh, she just leaned on that

:55:05. > :55:16.and it's come down short. Just over 50 metres. She is a

:55:17. > :55:18.65-metre thrower from earlier this year at her best.

:55:19. > :55:26.Possibly, just seemed to lean through that,

:55:27. > :55:29.You can see the rain is starting to come down again.

:55:30. > :55:33.A one kilogram discus, 18cm in diameter, you've got

:55:34. > :55:45.We had the drama with the rain for the pole vaulters, and no-one has

:55:46. > :55:48.jumped for the last 10 or 15 minutes because there seems to be a problem

:55:49. > :55:50.with the mechanism - two uprights, you can see there,

:55:51. > :55:53.supposed to be raised and these officials have been working hard

:55:54. > :55:56.This is the last thing the vaulters need.

:55:57. > :55:59.This is turning into less of a pole vaulting competition and more

:56:00. > :56:06.You can see there, down to the far side of the track.

:56:07. > :56:08.But, um, the competition is only just beginning two hours

:56:09. > :56:18.You work your socks off all winter, you do your training,

:56:19. > :56:21.you compete, you qualify, you get here and then a mechanical

:56:22. > :56:27.fault after a massive rain delay means your competition is held up.

:56:28. > :56:33.It's not ideal for these pole vaulters.

:56:34. > :56:37.It is moving, I think, at the moment.

:56:38. > :56:41.It's gone back up to the height it should be, so hopefully they'll get

:56:42. > :56:43.If you're doing anything tomorrow, cancel it.

:56:44. > :56:53.The next event on the track is the men's 800m and if this final

:56:54. > :56:55.is anything like the final we saw in London in 2012,

:56:56. > :57:07.The record world-holder and World Champion is attempting

:57:08. > :57:14.to Olympic Champion, David Rudisha.

:57:15. > :57:25.The others have been sucked into this.

:57:26. > :57:31.That might help Andrew, and we'll find out later in the last 100m.

:57:32. > :57:33.It is following the script that everybody thought would happen.

:57:34. > :57:35.It's Rudisha in the front as we expected.

:57:36. > :57:40.Coming down the home straight he's looking for a decent,

:57:41. > :57:46.The medals may be decided by the people who don't follow him.

:57:47. > :57:51.49.2 is a phenomenal opening and he knows about performances.

:57:52. > :57:54.There have been world records set in the Olympic Games at the 800m.

:57:55. > :58:06.David Rudisha, great athlete that he is.

:58:07. > :58:09.And they're sucked into going with him down the back straight.

:58:10. > :58:17.That's really, really quick through 600m.

:58:18. > :58:33.David Rudisha, already the world record-holder,

:58:34. > :58:35.already the World Champion, striding away to become

:58:36. > :58:37.the Olympic Champion, how quick will it be?

:58:38. > :58:47.An incredible moment, wasn't it, Paula?

:58:48. > :58:50.And matched, I guess, by last night's 400m world record.

:58:51. > :58:53.It had the same feel, didn't it, inside the stadium because,

:58:54. > :58:56.while he was exemplary and leading the world, not many people predicted

:58:57. > :59:01.No, to come out and attack and get a world record in an Olympic

:59:02. > :59:05.It's extremely rare, especially in events

:59:06. > :59:11.In the 10,000m, it's a different situation the other night

:59:12. > :59:14.because we had somebody to take it on really hard in the opening laps.

:59:15. > :59:17.In the 800m, Rudisha went out and he did it all on his own.

:59:18. > :59:27.He doesn't have the same aura of invincibility about him

:59:28. > :59:34.But I think he's rounding into form and I still think he'll be the one

:59:35. > :59:37.that most of those guys there will think in is the main

:59:38. > :59:44.We'll talk about the rest of the field and who the threats

:59:45. > :59:48.might be, but as we went into that race, an enormous cheer rang out

:59:49. > :59:53.inside the athletics stadium, and Steve Backley will tell you why.

:59:54. > :00:01.Huge cheer, Gabi, because it was this man, Da Silva of Brazil.

:00:02. > :00:09.by the skin of his teeth, Thiago Braz Da Silva.

:00:10. > :00:13.A plucky last-attempt jump of 5.70m got him through qualification.

:00:14. > :00:21.And he's one of only two athletes who've gone clear

:00:22. > :00:36.The Czech is the other one, and it's a good clearance for Da Silva.

:00:37. > :00:38.He's one of only a couple of athletes in -

:00:39. > :00:41.that they're hoping might challenge for medals.

:00:42. > :00:44.A lot of excitement in the Olympic Stadium with the pole

:00:45. > :00:46.vaulters and a lot of them are wanting and waiting

:00:47. > :00:50.to see the great man, the great David Rudisha of Kenya.

:00:51. > :00:52.Already one of the all-time greats, partly because of that performance

:00:53. > :00:56.in the Olympic Games four years ago in London.

:00:57. > :01:02.Anyone who was there will remember it was a great athletic feat.

:01:03. > :01:06.David Rudisha attempting to be the first man since Peter Snell

:01:07. > :01:19.The great thing is they have the same birthday, December 17.

:01:20. > :01:22.Snel was a great athlete, Brendan, and here is another one.

:01:23. > :01:27.L was a great athlete, Brendan, and here is another one.

:01:28. > :01:32.He got me interested when I was a young kid back in the '60s.

:01:33. > :01:34.But this man inspired everyone in 2012 and Seb Coe,

:01:35. > :01:36.the chairman of the London organising committee and now

:01:37. > :01:39.the president of the IAAF, said it was the best

:01:40. > :01:46.performance of the whole Games, this man, world record in the 800m.

:01:47. > :01:48.That was Seb's event is so he was biased.

:01:49. > :02:00.I think we're going to see great performance tonight.

:02:01. > :02:02.It may not be exactly the same manner, Steve.

:02:03. > :02:16.We'll maybe come on to that in a second.

:02:17. > :02:19.I don't know whether - Paula, you've watched him run this

:02:20. > :02:22.Early season, the question marks were getting quite big.

:02:23. > :02:26.He was beaten by Kipketer in the trials and beaten

:02:27. > :02:29.He came out recently and ran a 1:43 which boosted his confidence

:02:30. > :02:33.So, too, did Makhloufi and he's the 1,500m defending

:02:34. > :02:36.There's a huge danger to come from him.

:02:37. > :02:39.Makhloufi has a lot of support in this stadium here tonight

:02:40. > :03:00.This is Boris Berian, the world indoor champion.

:03:01. > :03:03.There's Makhloufi, Olympic Champion in 1,500m taking

:03:04. > :03:06.We'll see him in the 1,500m here as well.

:03:07. > :03:14.A lot of Algerian support here for him.

:03:15. > :03:16.The man who beat Rudisha in the Kenyan trials,

:03:17. > :03:18.this young, prodigious talent, former world junior champion,

:03:19. > :03:21.still just 19, won in Monaco as well in the Diamond League,

:03:22. > :03:28.the last big Diamond League race before here, Alfred Kipketer.

:03:29. > :03:29.Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, French world-holder,

:03:30. > :03:31.only made the semifinal in London but in good form.

:03:32. > :03:49.Big cheer for him and so there should be.

:03:50. > :03:58.A lot of people will hope he'll get his second gold medal.

:03:59. > :04:06.What about this man, Clayton Murphy from a pig farm

:04:07. > :04:08.in the north of Cincinnati, Ohio?

:04:09. > :04:11.He's been compared to the great Dave Wattle who won in 1972

:04:12. > :04:27.He was originally trying to make the 1,500m team but finds himself

:04:28. > :04:39.That's Ferguson Rotich on the outside.

:04:40. > :04:47.The Olympic 800m title, David Rudisha defending his title.

:04:48. > :04:49.He loves front running, he always has.

:04:50. > :04:52.It's how he likes to do it but everybody knows that

:04:53. > :04:56.and everybody knows what's supposed to happen here.

:04:57. > :04:59.Alfred Kipketer has gone off very quickly already and will come

:05:00. > :05:02.in front of Rudisha and might just squeeze him a little built but just

:05:03. > :05:05.gives him a little bit of room or Rudisha asks for the room

:05:06. > :05:09.and this is a race to the first 200m and Rudisha has to give up.

:05:10. > :05:11.This is silly from Alfred Kipketer unless he's trying

:05:12. > :05:16.He's going crazy fast through the first 300m.

:05:17. > :05:25.He looks as though he's going far too fast here.

:05:26. > :05:27.It was almost a race to the 200m point.

:05:28. > :05:30.David Rudisha trying to get in the lead and dominate the race

:05:31. > :05:34.Kipketer, the young man from Kenya who won the trials,

:05:35. > :05:36.goes through in 49, and I think he's gone too

:05:37. > :05:37.quickly, and Rudisha now

:05:38. > :05:45.He wants to hold him up but, again, Kipketer won't let him past.

:05:46. > :05:48.The great David Rudisha is now being run out of his own style,

:05:49. > :05:51.so he accelerates down the back straight and this is his drive

:05:52. > :05:56.He's going to try and hold his position.

:05:57. > :06:01.He's a great athlete, and Bosse is attacking him.

:06:02. > :06:11.Kipketer messed this race up for him.

:06:12. > :06:14.Bosse and Makhloufi hard down the home straight,

:06:15. > :06:27.He's going to win his second Olympic gold!

:06:28. > :06:42.His team-mate did everything he could to mess this race up

:06:43. > :06:47.He grabbed it by the scruff of the neck in the last 300m.

:06:48. > :06:54.That's what he does better than anybody else, from 300m to go

:06:55. > :06:57.to 200m to go and he asks the questions of everybody -

:06:58. > :07:01.Sometimes it's because he's been out the front all the way.

:07:02. > :07:08.He knew that would happen but if you try to go with Rudisha,

:07:09. > :07:14.Makhloufi was probably just a little bit further back and was able

:07:15. > :07:18.Rewarded with a silver medal, and the man who sat right

:07:19. > :07:21.at the back, sat off it, finished quickly, rewarded

:07:22. > :07:23.with a bronze medal, Clayton Murphy of the United States.

:07:24. > :07:33.But Rudisha, 1:42.15 for anyone else would be brilliant.

:07:34. > :07:36.For him, well, it's not ordinary, because it was still a great

:07:37. > :07:39.performance and a very fast race for him, given the fact that,

:07:40. > :07:42.of course, he broke the world record in the Olympic final four years ago.

:07:43. > :07:46.I don't think he'll care about the time today.

:07:47. > :07:50.I've no idea what Alfred Kipketer was up to.

:07:51. > :07:53.He could have been a big danger, threw his own race away and almost

:07:54. > :07:57.He's just too good, better than everybody else,

:07:58. > :07:59.miles better than everybody else and he proved it.

:08:00. > :08:03.I think the young man came here so enthusiastically.

:08:04. > :08:06.He's heard about all the admiration that we all have for David Rudisha.

:08:07. > :08:17.David Rudisha used his experience there.

:08:18. > :08:20.He didn't respond, but if you look at it on the first lap,

:08:21. > :08:22.that was absolutely amazing, it really was.

:08:23. > :08:31.There they are now on the top bend and Rudisha...

:08:32. > :08:34.Just allowed his team-mate, Kipketer, to run away from him

:08:35. > :08:38.and I've just got the split times from Mark Butler.

:08:39. > :08:41.They ran the first 200m in 23 seconds, and that's exactly why

:08:42. > :08:43.Kipketer wasn't able to keep going and that is why

:08:44. > :08:46.David Rudisha backed off, let him go away a little and now

:08:47. > :08:49.in the back straight, we're looking at a bit of an odd

:08:50. > :08:52.position here but there is Kipketer, trying to hold on, and there

:08:53. > :09:11.He was inspired to become an Olympian by his father,

:09:12. > :09:14.who won a silver medal in the 4X400m in 1968.

:09:15. > :09:45.The great Peter Snell was the last one to do it, and a Great British

:09:46. > :09:48.athlete defended his title in the 20s, but this

:09:49. > :09:49.man is impressive, a proud Masai warrior.

:09:50. > :09:52.There he is, and today he was in a battle, but I tell

:09:53. > :09:55.you what, experience was what won it for him.

:09:56. > :09:56.He didn't allow anything to disturb him.

:09:57. > :09:59.The young Kipketer almost spoiled the race, but he couldn't spoil

:10:00. > :10:01.it for the Great One, the great David Rudisha retains

:10:02. > :10:05.The 1,500m champion from London crosses the line, and there

:10:06. > :10:07.is Rudisha in full flow, a magnificent sight,

:10:08. > :10:09.one of the great sights of athletics is David Rudisha,

:10:10. > :10:10.two-times Olympic Champion, a great performance,

:10:11. > :10:15.So if we look back from the start of this race -

:10:16. > :10:18.and I don't know whether there was any type of chatting beforehand

:10:19. > :10:19.or information passed between Kipketer and Rudisha

:10:20. > :10:22.that he was going to take this on like this.

:10:23. > :10:24.It didn't look like it and it certainly looked like Rudisha

:10:25. > :10:27.thought he was going to be allowed to come through on the inside.

:10:28. > :10:31.His team-mate checked in at 23 for the first 200m.

:10:32. > :10:32.It's crazy, and Rudisha realises that.

:10:33. > :10:35.It looks like he's jogging now, scaled back to just running 26

:10:36. > :10:44.The others sitting behind him and Steve said earlier that,

:10:45. > :10:47.you know, when you expect the way that Rudisha is going to race,

:10:48. > :10:50.right now in his mind, he was reformulating all of that

:10:51. > :10:52.and throwing something totally different into the mix, and I don't

:10:53. > :10:58.think they expected it to happen like this in the second lap.

:10:59. > :11:00.Right now, I was thinking Lewandowski was going

:11:01. > :11:03.to be the one coming through because he was the one

:11:04. > :11:06.who sat back the most on that first lap and probably had the best left

:11:07. > :11:08.in his legs coming into the last lap,

:11:09. > :11:10.but it was Clayton Murphy who is now

:11:11. > :11:12.third from the back, just trying to check

:11:13. > :11:19.out behind Makhloufi, who stumbled a little bit there.

:11:20. > :11:22.Alfred Kipketer now is just carrying so much lactate in his legs.

:11:23. > :11:24.He can't keep moving forwards, and they're

:11:25. > :11:28.Bosse maybe made his move a little bit early in second place.

:11:29. > :11:31.Makhloufi, he can feel him coming up on his shoulder and he knows he's

:11:32. > :11:34.probably running to hang on to the bronze medal

:11:35. > :11:36.because David Rudisha has thrown in another surge and looked away

:11:37. > :11:38.and back to his very best, moving clear.

:11:39. > :11:40.Makhloufi chasing hard, but he doesn't have another gear.

:11:41. > :11:42.Clayton Murphy, maybe if he'd started sooner

:11:43. > :11:45.he might have been able to challenge for the silver medal.

:11:46. > :11:47.Well, a brilliant performance, and what a great run

:11:48. > :11:49.from Clayton Murphy to take the bronze medal.

:11:50. > :11:52.Just one of another host - you know, when David Rudisha runs,

:11:53. > :11:56.When he wins, there's all these other little letters come

:11:57. > :11:58.after the other people - they're usually NRs,

:11:59. > :12:00.national records, PBs, personal bests or season's bests,

:12:01. > :12:03.He makes everybody else run fast as well.

:12:04. > :12:07.I loved what he did - Martyn Rooney is saying

:12:08. > :12:15.He does something better than anyone in history has done at 800m.

:12:16. > :12:18.Even when he's at the front is that people don't realise he wins

:12:19. > :12:31.He doesn't wait, even when he's running very, very fast.

:12:32. > :12:33.He wins the race in the back straight.

:12:34. > :12:37.I'll tell you what, Steve, it would have been faster if it wasn't

:12:38. > :12:41.When they run 23 for the first 200m, that can really, really damage,

:12:42. > :12:44.and that's where the wise move from David Rudisha, where he switched

:12:45. > :12:47.it off and said he wasn't going to race Kipketer for the lead.

:12:48. > :12:50.And that result, Kipketer couldn't even finish properly.

:12:51. > :13:06.Well, another word on Clayton Murphy, that he's run

:13:07. > :13:11.I'm just trying to see whether or not he's broken

:13:12. > :13:14.Johnny Grey, the last American medallist,

:13:15. > :13:17.and Johnny Grey is still - only just though -

:13:18. > :13:19.the American record-holder, 1:42 of 60 was his time.

:13:20. > :13:21.Let's just clarify the result - retaining his Olympic title,

:13:22. > :13:23.David Rudisha of Kenya, Makhloufi with a new national record

:13:24. > :13:27.for Nigeria, follows up his gold medal in the 1,500m in London, gets

:13:28. > :13:30.And a new name, really - 21-year-old Clayton Murphy

:13:31. > :13:53.Bosse went out of it, big season's best for him but fourth

:13:54. > :13:57.place, jogged across the line really, disconsolate

:13:58. > :14:02.Rotich, Lewandowski finished quickly and Alfred Kipketer will have

:14:03. > :14:06.to go away, and somebody should sit down and say,

:14:07. > :14:10."You're a great talent but that's not how to run a time of the 800m."

:14:11. > :14:16.Well, coming up next in the Athletics Stadium

:14:17. > :14:27.here tonight is the medal ceremony for the women's hammer.

:14:28. > :14:30.Sophie Hitchon of Great Britain will be presented with her bronze medal,

:14:31. > :14:33.which is the first medal for throwing for a British female

:14:34. > :14:44.And the heady days of Fatima Whitbread and Tessa Sanderson and,

:14:45. > :14:47.Steve, the hope is from everybody who loves this sport that this might

:14:48. > :14:50.be kind of a Beth Tweddel moment in gymnastics,

:14:51. > :14:53.that will spark success where people want to dip in and try it.

:14:54. > :14:55.Not that people weren't trying gymnastics, but it led to more

:14:56. > :14:59.It did and she's such an inspiration to many,

:15:00. > :15:01.Sophie Hitchon taking a bronze medal here.

:15:02. > :15:08.No-one has done what she's done today in getting on to an Olympic

:15:09. > :15:13.rostrum in the women's hammer and that's what makes this

:15:14. > :15:17.Sophie Hitchon performed brilliantly this morning in the women's discus

:15:18. > :15:42.It took her sixth-round throw to come into third place

:15:43. > :15:48.92 years ago, Malcolm Noakes took a bronze medal in the Olympic Games

:15:49. > :15:51.in 1924 and she receives the award from a big figure in

:15:52. > :15:58.Sophie Hitchon, a wonderful bronze medal, first time ever

:15:59. > :16:20.that a British thrower has stood on a hammer rostrum.

:16:21. > :16:23.The Chinese thrower, to be fair, was in second place in the early

:16:24. > :16:28.The battle was behind her for the bronze medal place.

:16:29. > :16:44.So a comfortable silver medal for her.

:16:45. > :17:04.Sophie has been smiling all day, but the gold medal

:17:05. > :17:18.Well, the biggest cheer of all goes to this athlete,

:17:19. > :17:21.an historic performance for Anita Wlodarczyk, you heard it

:17:22. > :17:27.there, an Olympic record, a world record, 82.29m.

:17:28. > :17:32.She had three throws in the end over 80m.

:17:33. > :17:35.A comfortable winner, absolutely goes down

:17:36. > :17:40.as the greatest ever silver medallist four years ago,

:17:41. > :17:52.Close to tears, and a gold medal for Poland.

:17:53. > :18:02.Wlodarczyk - one of the performances of the Games so far.

:18:03. > :19:41.What a Games it's turning out to be, and a British

:19:42. > :19:43.record for Sophie Hitchon, at 25, the start of hopefully

:19:44. > :20:01.The World Champion from last year has to go clear.

:20:02. > :20:04.Oh, he's not really got much back from that and Barber is out.

:20:05. > :20:10.There's the reaction from Lavillenie.

:20:11. > :20:13.That put a spring in his step because he was one of the threats,

:20:14. > :20:19.He seemed to get nothing back from this.

:20:20. > :20:27.The pole just didn't seem to be doing anything for him.

:20:28. > :20:31.Barber is out at this height of 5.65m, a height

:20:32. > :20:44.His high point was well in front of the bars.

:20:45. > :20:49.It's a good two-and-a-half hours since the competition

:20:50. > :20:56.Three fouls from Barbara. -- from Barbara.

:20:57. > :21:00.I wonder how much the early disruption to the pole vault

:21:01. > :21:05.Sophie Hitchon has got her medal around her neck.

:21:06. > :21:09.She said it hadn't sunk in earlier because she was in the studio

:21:10. > :21:11.at the beginning of the evening, because she didn't have the medal

:21:12. > :21:14.yet and now she's hanging on to it because it's real.

:21:15. > :21:16.You never forget that feeling when you get your

:21:17. > :21:23.Her stomach is probably just turning over and she's dancing inside.

:21:24. > :21:30.It's just great, great to see, you know, one of these medals,

:21:31. > :21:34.a surprise medal, I think it's fair to say.

:21:35. > :21:36.She might have thought there was a chance,

:21:37. > :21:39.but for the rest of us it's such a brilliant performance.

:21:40. > :21:42.The last event on the track tonight will be the women's 400m final.

:21:43. > :21:44.Sadly for Great Britain, no representatives.

:21:45. > :21:54.We've been blessed British athletes before in this.

:21:55. > :21:58.Two athletes in particular, Miller from The Bahamas and Felix

:21:59. > :22:01.and the United States appeared in different semifinals so unusually

:22:02. > :22:03.we've got a chance to see them together.

:22:04. > :22:06.Do you expect Felix to take this out?

:22:07. > :22:12.Allyson Felix has been taking it out all year.

:22:13. > :22:14.We saw them in this race yesterday in the same semifinal

:22:15. > :22:30.You expect that Felix Wiedwald offers Miller.

:22:31. > :22:32.She took it out early rather than drafting along.

:22:33. > :22:35.Allyson Felix extended the drive, pushed it all the way out to 120m.

:22:36. > :22:37.Miller was already into her relaxation.

:22:38. > :22:39.This was very aggressive running from Allyson Felix, especial lip

:22:40. > :22:42.given that she's a speed runner up from the 200m running

:22:43. > :22:45.against a strength runner like Shaunae Miller.

:22:46. > :22:52.We don't know if Shaunae had reserve to respond to this

:22:53. > :23:06.You see her responding a little bit here.

:23:07. > :23:09.But it was not enough to pass here to take the victory

:23:10. > :23:12.She didn't need to though because it's not the objective

:23:13. > :23:15.What's interesting into tonight's final is to see

:23:16. > :23:19.You see her pushing and pushing and pushing.

:23:20. > :23:24.She doesn't get into her relaxation yet.

:23:25. > :23:26.At this point, you'd expect she's relaxing.

:23:27. > :23:31.It didn't take too much of a toll on her.

:23:32. > :23:36.It will be interesting tonight to see whether or not Allyson takes

:23:37. > :23:39.it out again because she is behind Shaunae Miller by two lanes.

:23:40. > :23:49.The other interesting thing is Natasha Hastings,

:23:50. > :23:52.the other American, always goes out large and she's in front of

:23:53. > :23:57.So it will be interesting to see if Allyson is more tactical

:23:58. > :23:59.and plays off the other athletes or whether she takes it out

:24:00. > :24:03.Shaunae Miller is on basically what was effectively

:24:04. > :24:08.She'll have leaned from van Niekerk last night that if she just goes

:24:09. > :24:14.out and runs her race, great things can happen.

:24:15. > :24:18.This is the final final of the evening, the women's 400m.

:24:19. > :24:21.A delayed start because of the earlier weather.

:24:22. > :24:31.There is Stephenie Ann McPherson in lane eight,

:24:32. > :24:33.won the Commonwealth title in Glasgow.

:24:34. > :24:36.Inside her is one of the real threats for the gold medal,

:24:37. > :24:38.unbeaten over 200m and 400m this year until she came up

:24:39. > :24:48.There is Natasha Hastings, who will fly out over the first 200 to try

:24:49. > :24:52.and hang on. And Shericka Jackson,

:24:53. > :24:55.who we're about to see, will believe What a run this 22-year-old produced

:24:56. > :25:08.to win her semifinal. Well below 50 seconds, only done

:25:09. > :25:10.that before with 49 of the Coleman 99, which bought her bronze in the

:25:11. > :25:13.World Championships last year. Not able to defend her

:25:14. > :25:16.Olympic title in the 200m. Finished fourth in the US trials

:25:17. > :25:19.but this is the one title across World Championships

:25:20. > :25:28.and Olympics that she does not have. Inside her, her team-mate,

:25:29. > :25:31.Phyllis Francis, who gave her a good And so you've got the Americans

:25:32. > :25:38.and Caribbeans in the outside lanes and inside, two Europeans,

:25:39. > :25:41.in Libania Grenot, a former Cuban She defended her European title this

:25:42. > :25:48.year. And on the extreme end side,

:25:49. > :25:51.is Olha Zemlyak, who run a personal best in her semifinal

:25:52. > :25:53.to make it through. Silver medallist at the European

:25:54. > :25:55.Championships in Zurich two years The men's 400m final of last night

:25:56. > :26:02.is hard act to follow. But we'll see Allyson Felix

:26:03. > :26:07.flying to win the one Shaunae Miller expected to be

:26:08. > :26:17.the major threat but, again, look for Shericka Jackson

:26:18. > :26:19.for Natasha Hastings, for Stephenie Ann McPherson,

:26:20. > :26:32.for Phyllis Francis. Zemlyak, Grenot, Francis, Felix,

:26:33. > :26:37.Jackson, Natasha Hastings, Shaunae Miller and Stephenie Ann

:26:38. > :26:42.McPherson. So Hastings will fly in lane six

:26:43. > :27:01.with her blonde hair In lane four, Allyson Felix just

:27:02. > :27:08.flowing down the track but there is Hastings doing

:27:09. > :27:11.what she does, almost up alongside Shaunae Miller who carries herself

:27:12. > :27:14.out with that long stride. Natasha Hastings up alongside her

:27:15. > :27:18.just now and inside her, Shericka Jackson is trying

:27:19. > :27:19.to keep pace. Shaunae Miller is trying to use her

:27:20. > :27:24.power and Natasha Hastings Shericka Jackson in lane five

:27:25. > :27:31.going strongly and these four are just beginning

:27:32. > :27:33.to separate themselves. Shaunae Miller has

:27:34. > :27:37.the lead just now. Miller gritting her teeth

:27:38. > :27:48.but here comes Allyson Felix. It's Shaunae Miller,

:27:49. > :27:51.but it's Allyson Felix on the line. Oh, Shaunae Miller hurls

:27:52. > :27:53.herself at the line! Allyson Felix gave it everything

:27:54. > :28:01.to try and get there. And that is giving it absolutely

:28:02. > :28:18.everything for a gold at the Olympic Games,

:28:19. > :28:20.Shaunae Miller holds off What a run from Shaunae Miller

:28:21. > :28:27.to become Olympic Champion and Felix and Shericka Jackson come

:28:28. > :28:28.to congratulate her. But that was an astonishing run from

:28:29. > :28:31.Shaunae Miller. That is how to finish a race

:28:32. > :28:42.and become an Olympic Champion! Looking at that, she

:28:43. > :28:47.genuinely stumbles. That's not here going I'm doing

:28:48. > :28:50.going to take a dive All the way down the home straight

:28:51. > :28:57.I was thinking Miller had it, Felix is coming, Miller is rallying,

:28:58. > :28:59.Felix is going to get there, Miller is rallying again and then

:29:00. > :29:02.Felix looked as though she might just have the momentum and Miller

:29:03. > :29:05.was hoping and hoping She eventually fell across it

:29:06. > :29:15.and by falling over the line Shericka Jackson got bronze

:29:16. > :29:25.but that is lactic-filling and no more to give from Shaunae Miller,

:29:26. > :29:28.no more to give, but she has got it all now, Olympic Champion

:29:29. > :29:32.and still she lies on the track and tries to take in what she's done

:29:33. > :29:34.and tries to recover and Michael Johnson was watching

:29:35. > :29:36.this as well. A fantastic race, Andrew

:29:37. > :29:45.and it unfolded in much the way that I expected it

:29:46. > :29:48.to with Natasha Hastings taking Allyson, I believe she had the race

:29:49. > :29:53.strategy here to lay back a little bit and not take

:29:54. > :29:56.control of the race. But what she didn't do was really

:29:57. > :30:00.control it from 200m to 300m. You've got to put yourself

:30:01. > :30:05.in position and she may have misjudged a little bit of how far

:30:06. > :30:08.Shaunae Miller was out ahead of her That's just an amazing effort

:30:09. > :30:13.from a world-class athlete, stumbling and you can go down

:30:14. > :30:16.but she just lunged for the finish Allyson Felix will be very

:30:17. > :30:22.disappointed because she needed a couple of more metres,

:30:23. > :30:24.maybe one more metre, in order to make this

:30:25. > :30:28.happen but unfortunately, the mistake she made was from 200m

:30:29. > :30:37.to 3 hundred am am just not making sure that she kept the contact

:30:38. > :30:41.with Shaunae Miller, This is where Allyson Felix realised

:30:42. > :30:46.she was in a little bit of trouble That's the right thing to do

:30:47. > :30:53.but Shaunae Miller has already opened up a lead here and,

:30:54. > :30:55.and, Allyson Felix was probably a little bit thrown off by the pace

:30:56. > :30:58.of Natasha Hastings, knowing that Natasha

:30:59. > :31:01.was going to take it out hard, but you are following her,

:31:02. > :31:03.do you keep contact You've got to keep contact

:31:04. > :31:11.with somebody that's out there in the front and that's

:31:12. > :31:14.a little bit confusing when your main competition

:31:15. > :31:17.is so far out ahead of you. Amazing effort there,

:31:18. > :31:20.just tithing across the finish line, sell advantaging what could have

:31:21. > :31:29.been a disaster for Shaunae Miller. I think Shaunae Miller is will have

:31:30. > :31:33.that photo finish framed and put in her room forever more,

:31:34. > :31:35.the moment she won It's just a little stumble

:31:36. > :31:38.towards the end. The legs had nothing,

:31:39. > :31:40.nothing left at all in them. It's becoming a little bit

:31:41. > :31:47.of a fad here, isn't it? If you've never run the 400m -

:31:48. > :31:50.let's face it, probably many of you haven't -

:31:51. > :31:52.but it's the one event where your legs go, they really go

:31:53. > :31:55.from you, and you know, you're just trying to keep moving

:31:56. > :31:57.forward and that's She's just used momentum

:31:58. > :32:13.to get her over the line. I do feel a little bit

:32:14. > :32:17.sorry for Allyson Felix. She's a great champion and,

:32:18. > :32:19.um, but the Olympics isn't It isn't about the nice people

:32:20. > :32:22.having to win. Shaunae Miller is a perfectly

:32:23. > :32:25.great athlete, a lovely - you know, a great junior champion

:32:26. > :32:28.and coming through into It's a real shame that Allyson Felix

:32:29. > :32:32.was not able to wrest this title but in Shaunae Miller,

:32:33. > :32:35.she's a great champion to give Please take a photo of me

:32:36. > :32:38.on the ground while I Gold medal ahead of Allyson Felix

:32:39. > :32:42.in football her last Olympics, realistically so the 400m Olympic

:32:43. > :32:49.title might forever elude her. Shericka Jackson

:32:50. > :32:50.fast-finishing to take bronze. Well, 2.5 hours since

:32:51. > :32:53.the start of the men's pole vault final and Renaud Lavillenie

:32:54. > :32:59.has taken to the runway for the first time

:33:00. > :33:09.of asking at 5.75m. He could have watched

:33:10. > :33:29.a film in that time. Good plant, rocks back,

:33:30. > :33:31.drives up and a comfortable clearance at a height that has

:33:32. > :33:34.eliminated more than half Lavillenie kept his powder dry,

:33:35. > :33:43.quite literally, because he does use Fortunately it dried up,

:33:44. > :34:00.and Lavillenie is off to a good start in pursuit of his

:34:01. > :34:02.Olympic title defence. Kudliicka looking to join

:34:03. > :34:03.him, the Czech. We have two men clear of 5.75m,

:34:04. > :34:08.and the drier conditions now are more conducive, and the athletes

:34:09. > :34:10.who have remained strong of mind and body and stayed involved will be

:34:11. > :34:13.rewarded across the next half We've only got about half a dozen

:34:14. > :34:28.left in the competition. The Polish athletes jump

:34:29. > :34:51.with bigger pole vaults. So this is what dry

:34:52. > :35:00.weather brings you. All of a sudden the competition has

:35:01. > :35:04.come to life, and Lisek, 23 years of age, will

:35:05. > :35:10.attempt the next height. There are other athletes,

:35:11. > :35:22.including this man... Thiago Braz Da Silva,

:35:23. > :35:35.huge home support for the Brazilian. If he goes clear, what a roar we're

:35:36. > :35:39.going to hear from the crowd. The roar from the crowd tells

:35:40. > :35:49.you all you need to know. Might he be Brazil's first

:35:50. > :36:03.medal in the athletics? Well, he's jumped 5.92m,

:36:04. > :36:06.5.90m in his last competition prior to these Games,

:36:07. > :36:08.so he's the man in form. Congratulations from

:36:09. > :36:23.Kendricks, the American. He has to go clear, even though

:36:24. > :36:37.it's his first attempt. It's his third potential failure

:36:38. > :36:41.and, indeed, it is. He's had a bit of a bumpy ride this

:36:42. > :36:52.evening, it has to be said. So Xue, three consecutive

:36:53. > :37:07.fouls and he's out. Kendricks looking on as the reigning

:37:08. > :37:11.Olympic Champion, Renaud Lavillenie He knows the significance

:37:12. > :37:40.of first-time clearances Another comfortable clearance from

:37:41. > :37:46.the Flying Frenchman. A real test of character

:37:47. > :37:50.in what he's been asked So, then, this pole

:37:51. > :38:11.vault really hotting up. We have a Frenchman

:38:12. > :38:13.out in front at the moment. Thiago Braz da Silva,

:38:14. > :38:15.5.85m, looking to match Thiago Braz da Silva clear

:38:16. > :38:36.at a height that only the reigning And as it stands, he's in

:38:37. > :38:47.second place. Two of them have gone clear

:38:48. > :38:55.at this height of 5.85m. And two of them have

:38:56. > :39:02.yet to attempt it. Good chance of a medal

:39:03. > :39:14.with that jump. That's exactly what this stadium

:39:15. > :39:17.needs, and what the athletics We had a full stadium last night,

:39:18. > :39:23.of course, for Bolt. And, um, Shaunae Miller,

:39:24. > :39:28.David Rudisha, two great champions have done their work for the night

:39:29. > :39:30.but these guys have had These are the 110m hurdlers who have

:39:31. > :39:37.been given another chance. Two athletes have not

:39:38. > :39:48.bothered coming back. They know that they wouldn't really

:39:49. > :39:50.have a chance because they have to go faster

:39:51. > :39:55.than the current fastest losers. There are four fastest-loser spots

:39:56. > :39:59.available to these athletes. So Ali hasn't come out

:40:00. > :40:02.and Anousone hasn't come out. All of the others at some point this

:40:03. > :40:08.year have gone quicker The fastest-loser spots

:40:09. > :40:13.at the minute are 13.62, 13.63 13.64 and 13.66,

:40:14. > :40:17.so essentially 13.6. If four of these men can run

:40:18. > :40:20.quicker than that here, they go through as the fastest loser

:40:21. > :40:24.representatives in the next round. So, Carter, Buhler, Portilla

:40:25. > :40:35.and Riva in four and Alexander John It's the rerun heat

:40:36. > :40:51.of the 110m hurdles. Deuce Carter of Jamaica

:40:52. > :41:00.is starting to come away. The others, I don't think

:41:01. > :41:11.so because he was quite a long way ahead of the others

:41:12. > :41:13.and so Deuce Carter, in heat two, he hit the hurdles,

:41:14. > :41:19.and he will say that the fact that he was able or wasn't

:41:20. > :41:22.able to run a clean race because of the weather but,

:41:23. > :41:29.to be honest, others did around him. But he's been a fairly lucky man

:41:30. > :41:33.in my view to be able to come back. So he is through and the others

:41:34. > :41:39.are too slow, Colin. Steve, I'm trying to look

:41:40. > :41:45.on the scoreboard to see who he will Carter was much sweeter,

:41:46. > :41:52.wasn't he, this time around. He's already had a race,

:41:53. > :41:58.a run-out, a run through, He is the class of the field,

:41:59. > :42:07.remember his season's best. You would expect him to have an easy

:42:08. > :42:10.qualification in relative terms He can relax and think to himself,

:42:11. > :42:34."Am I a lucky man?" "Bad conditions to disqualified,

:42:35. > :42:38.to not running well, to run a time of 13.51

:42:39. > :42:46.and see myself ease - and I mean ease -

:42:47. > :43:00.into the next round?" Well, a swap of positionings

:43:01. > :43:02.here because we've got Sam Kendricks on the runway

:43:03. > :43:13.with Lavillenie looking on. Oh, Kendricks has joined the two

:43:14. > :43:15.that are clear already. Lavillenie clear, da

:43:16. > :43:17.Silva of Brazil clear, and now Sam Kendricks the American

:43:18. > :43:20.champion thumps his chest because that may be a jump that

:43:21. > :43:27.gets him on the rostrum. We've just got to sort

:43:28. > :43:29.out in which position, which may take a little

:43:30. > :43:34.bit of doing. What athleticism that is at nearly

:43:35. > :43:37.six metres up in the air. Wonderful clearance

:43:38. > :43:41.for Sam Kendricks of 5.85m. Well, the bar has been

:43:42. > :44:01.raised again to 5.93m. First attempt for the reigning

:44:02. > :44:04.Olympic Champion, Lavillenie. He's brilliant when he gets it right

:44:05. > :44:34.and he's won 15 of his 17 The only glitch was

:44:35. > :44:39.the European Championships. Lavillenie goes into the lead, the

:44:40. > :44:43.only athlete clear at 5.93m. It's nearly 11:30pm at night,

:44:44. > :45:03.but da Silva is looking focused, There was talk of the possibility

:45:04. > :45:16.of him being involved in the medals. If he clears this height,

:45:17. > :45:23.we'd start to believe. It looked as though he had his

:45:24. > :45:30.body half over that. It would have given him confidence

:45:31. > :45:39.for his next two attempts. Let's have a look at

:45:40. > :45:41.this from the side. Only Lavillenie to have gone

:45:42. > :45:52.clear at this height. So at the moment, as it stands,

:45:53. > :45:55.da Silva is in silver And Lavillenie keeping his

:45:56. > :46:02.poles out of the way. You need to be in this event,

:46:03. > :46:06.especially this evening Well, Sam Kendricks looked really

:46:07. > :46:16.good at the lower heights, it Massive margins of clearance

:46:17. > :46:23.in the early stages. That said, it was a very

:46:24. > :46:29.good clearance at the For Kendricks, this

:46:30. > :46:35.would be a new lifetime The Americans - well,

:46:36. > :46:39.in the 28 times the pole vault has been contested over the last 120

:46:40. > :46:42.years at the Olympics, Can Kendricks

:46:43. > :46:50.join a long list of champions? Again, it seemed to

:46:51. > :46:59.come obvious on that. It will be interesting to see this

:47:00. > :47:02.from the side. It's really bubbling up into being

:47:03. > :47:06.one of the great competitions. We've seen some wonderful field

:47:07. > :47:09.events so far at these Olympic Games, and the men's pole

:47:10. > :47:11.vault final here this 5.93m foul you can see

:47:12. > :47:25.there for Kendricks. He's currently in bronze medal

:47:26. > :47:33.position if it stays as it is. We'll tidy up the 110m

:47:34. > :47:35.hurdles for you. One of the athletes was disqualified

:47:36. > :47:42.in that one as well. The unlucky athlete who wasn't

:47:43. > :47:51.allowed to run against these He thought he was in

:47:52. > :47:55.the semifinal, and now he's not. An extraordinary turn of events

:47:56. > :48:12.in the 110m hurdles. Let's talk about the 400-metre

:48:13. > :48:16.final. One of the most stunning finishes I have seen in this

:48:17. > :48:18.championship. Miller threw herself over the line.

:48:19. > :48:22.She had another metre, it would've been herself.

:48:23. > :48:29.We knew it was going to be a tight race.

:48:30. > :48:31.Those two were the class of the field.

:48:32. > :48:40.You see Natasha Hastings going out hard, up on Shaunae Miller already.

:48:41. > :48:42.Miller out in lane seven, probably took the same ploch

:48:43. > :48:46.I'm not going to worry about what is going on,

:48:47. > :48:49.on the inside, because I can't see Felix, I can't compete

:48:50. > :48:51.with her, so I run the race and hope it's enough.

:48:52. > :48:56.She's not the fastest athlete in the field.

:48:57. > :48:58.This is probably what Felix expected.

:48:59. > :49:04.Felix expected that Shaunae would try to run her down.

:49:05. > :49:07.But here, Allyson left it a little bit too late,

:49:08. > :49:09.allowed Shaunae Miller to get too big of a gap.

:49:10. > :49:15.She is heading towards the finish line.

:49:16. > :49:19.The legs don't want to come up as high as they used to.

:49:20. > :49:22.She is trying to position herself to lean at the finish line,

:49:23. > :49:25.because she knew she had a race on her hands,

:49:26. > :49:34.She knew she would have a tough race with Allyson Felix to the tape.

:49:35. > :49:40.You will see her, what Shaunae Miller will do at the end of this,

:49:41. > :49:42.she is going to try to position herself to out lean,

:49:43. > :49:46.And when she does that, and gets her body in position,

:49:47. > :49:51.she gets a bit too far forward and stumbles and at this point,

:49:52. > :49:56.she is stumbling a great effort and recovery by Shaunae Miller

:49:57. > :50:16.That would have been... Oh, did you see that with Lexmark?!

:50:17. > :50:23.That's the finish we expected in the men's 400 and

:50:24. > :50:28.We are going to get out there because Da Silva is going again.

:50:29. > :50:44.But the concentration all on this man.

:50:45. > :50:52.And Da Silva, at the second time of asking,

:50:53. > :50:59.With the pressure on, the expectation of a nation,

:51:00. > :51:02.no medals so far and possibly only one of two chances across

:51:03. > :51:18.the whole of these athletics events at the Olympics.

:51:19. > :51:20.And Da Silva, very likely, only four athletes still in the competition,

:51:21. > :51:36.Just one centimetre on his Brazilian national record.

:51:37. > :51:47.Kendricks looking to build on the energy, excitement and focus.

:51:48. > :52:00.Remember, the supports at the side of the bed,

:52:01. > :52:03.are in the position that he requests.

:52:04. > :52:05.They can be moved away from him and towards him.

:52:06. > :52:20.If you have a look at this closely, he's coming down on that.

:52:21. > :52:31.I don't know how much of you are aficionados of the pole

:52:32. > :52:33.vault, but if Lisek fails, he's in next one

:52:34. > :52:37.So the guaranteed medal for the Brazilian.

:52:38. > :52:51.They are looking at the noughts and crosses. On the screen.

:52:52. > :53:01.If Lisek fails here, there's a Brazilian medal.

:53:02. > :53:04.As you say, failure at the previous height, it's 3 consecutive,

:53:05. > :53:14.Lisek failed once at 5.85, he chose to pass at this height.

:53:15. > :53:19.This would be a third failure, or indeed, a clearance,

:53:20. > :53:44.That Thiago Braz da Silva is guaranteed a medal.

:53:45. > :53:51.I'm sure the stadium announcer will market. -- will mark it.

:53:52. > :53:54.Noughts a crosses, it's a complex thing, in some regards,

:53:55. > :54:00.And a height way beyond anything he cleared in the past.

:54:01. > :54:11.Top corner, where the Brazil flags are, they have been dancing

:54:12. > :54:14.and jumping and holding their breath as Sam Kendricks has 1 last attempt

:54:15. > :54:16.at 5.93 to go clear, to stay in the competition.

:54:17. > :54:33.The three medallists have been decided, it is just a question of

:54:34. > :54:35.who gets what. If he goes clear, new heights

:54:36. > :54:47.will be attempted and the next height will be 5.98,

:54:48. > :54:50.which no man in the world this year, No man in the world, including this

:54:51. > :55:04.man, has cleared. He has in the past, 6.16,

:55:05. > :55:10.his world record from February 2014. So the higher it goes the more it

:55:11. > :55:21.goes in favour of the Frenchman. But Kendricks, will the support

:55:22. > :55:23.of his competitors, third attempt But it's 3 failures

:55:24. > :55:30.for Sam Kendricks. Cheers from the crowd

:55:31. > :55:37.because they know the significance of that means they have got

:55:38. > :55:39.a guaranteed silver And Thiago Da Silva

:55:40. > :55:55.and possibly even more. Wonderful shots from the side

:55:56. > :55:57.there of Kendricks trying to manoeuvre himself over that

:55:58. > :56:02.very high bar. Well, it was delayed by half

:56:03. > :56:17.an hour, but what a pole vault David Rudisha, champion from London,

:56:18. > :56:21.world record holder, retaining his Olympic title

:56:22. > :56:23.in an absolutely fascinating race His maturity and experience saw him

:56:24. > :56:37.take the gold-medal. And we caught up

:56:38. > :56:39.with him afterwards. Well, David, congratulations,

:56:40. > :56:43.another fantastic performance. I'm very happy to have

:56:44. > :56:55.defended this title, Doing it in a special way,

:56:56. > :57:03.like today, it's just fantastic. The times you had this year,

:57:04. > :57:05.you didn't win the Kenyan trials, for example,

:57:06. > :57:07.people were questioning you. They proved foolish

:57:08. > :57:10.to begin to doubt you? I don't want to get discouraged,

:57:11. > :57:18.to doubt myself. I know my training was great,

:57:19. > :57:22.and I've been having really good sessions since I was injured,

:57:23. > :57:27.and I had no doubt with my form and even when I was running

:57:28. > :57:29.in Stockholm, the weather was terrible, you never

:57:30. > :57:35.doubted myself. I just continued training

:57:36. > :57:40.because I knew I was feeling my body is good, I just need to get

:57:41. > :57:43.a good opportunity. In the four years between London

:57:44. > :57:47.and now, a few doubts. There have been doubts and injury

:57:48. > :57:52.concerns. This is one of my fastest

:57:53. > :57:57.times since London. To do it in an Olympic

:57:58. > :58:00.final, it's great. Nothing so important than to run

:58:01. > :58:04.well and win such a big competition and win my second gold

:58:05. > :58:06.in the Olympics is a You're a great champion,

:58:07. > :58:13.a legend of the sport. Absolutely thrilling

:58:14. > :58:24.pole vault final. Renaud Lavillenie of France,

:58:25. > :58:26.a clean sheet so far. I think he knows of that even

:58:27. > :58:51.that may be too much, It would be a massive lifetime best

:58:52. > :59:02.if the Brazilian can match the flying Frenchman,

:59:03. > :59:03.Lavillenie, when he's He knew, he was celebrating

:59:04. > :59:10.as he went over that. And Lavillenie, when he gets it

:59:11. > :59:12.right, he is almost unbeatable. Well, it has just come up

:59:13. > :59:25.on the screen that Braz da Silva has And what a brave strategic move

:59:26. > :59:32.that is. Well, I was being

:59:33. > :59:37.optimistic for him. If you're going to get it right,

:59:38. > :59:41.he may as well get it really right. Well, first of all, Lavillenie,

:59:42. > :59:46.let's hand it to him, he's brilliant under this

:59:47. > :59:47.sort of pressure. Da Silva, I guess,

:59:48. > :59:54.he's thinking, gold. 5.98 wouldn't improve

:59:55. > :00:06.things for him. It's just going to the next height

:00:07. > :00:08.anyway. So he's thinking, all

:00:09. > :00:10.right, bring it on! I'm up against Lavillenie,

:00:11. > :00:27.the world's best, the world's number It would be a mas will do

:00:28. > :00:35.5.90 he jumped coming into this competition.

:00:36. > :01:01.Just that little look of puzzlement on his face.

:01:02. > :01:12.It may be a change of poles that you can see there.

:01:13. > :01:14.The pole vaulters carry a number of jumping...

:01:15. > :01:20.He's looking for a longer one to propel him up in the air.

:01:21. > :01:27.This is what the athletics programme so needs.

:01:28. > :01:30.If Brazil have won a medal here tonight, and this guy will be

:01:31. > :01:50.I have to say, it's 20 to midnight, I know it's very late at home,

:01:51. > :01:54.but it's 20 to midnight here, and we are in the pole vault final.

:01:55. > :01:57.But this is what I hope will bring people for the rest of the week.

:01:58. > :01:59.It was great when Bolt was here last night,

:02:00. > :02:02.but we want a full stadium, and this will certainly help.

:02:03. > :02:04.An interesting look on the face of Lavillenie there.

:02:05. > :02:06.What do you think is going through his mind?

:02:07. > :02:12.He's probably thinking this is great, I'm loving this,

:02:13. > :02:14.I'm up against a local but I've cleared 75, 93, 98.

:02:15. > :02:18.He's probably a little surprised that Da Silva cleared 5.93.

:02:19. > :02:26.And when he passed at 5.98, but he'll understand

:02:27. > :02:32.These competitive juices are flowing.

:02:33. > :02:36.He has to go 6.03 against this young man.

:02:37. > :03:01.If he then has to get that one jump chance,

:03:02. > :03:04.Should he get it, it goes in favour of the Frenchman,

:03:05. > :03:29.Boy, the crowd, a lot of noise, a lot of French flags.

:03:30. > :03:45.Remember 1998, World Cup final, France versus Brazil.

:03:46. > :03:57.He almost dislodged that bar, almost for it to rerest

:03:58. > :04:03.Is the most important jump of the competition.

:04:04. > :04:06.If he goes clear, he's not handed the victory, but it makes him

:04:07. > :04:12.It would mean that Lavillenie would have to go at a higher height,

:04:13. > :04:25.So if ever you're going to muster everyone you have ever trained for,

:04:26. > :04:35.dreamed of, and committed your life to, it's now.

:04:36. > :04:38.With the support of a home nation, we know what that feels

:04:39. > :05:05.He must have dreamed of this opportunity.

:05:06. > :05:18.You can say whatever happens here, I was going down this

:05:19. > :05:22.runway for the gold medal against Lavillenie.

:05:23. > :05:39.And so the pole vault poles that the athletes jump

:05:40. > :05:56.A bunch of combinations that athletes become

:05:57. > :06:02.Longer pole, he may have never jumped on it before.

:06:03. > :06:05.It's the sort of thing he carries for this moment.

:06:06. > :06:07.When you're on, the wind's on your back, the crowd's

:06:08. > :06:09.on your side, well, most of them, anyway.

:06:10. > :06:12.We'll be very football songs now, we'll be having "Da Silva's on fire"

:06:13. > :06:22.He's the only man in the competition that's been up

:06:23. > :06:37.Had a series of them indoors, not outdoors this year.

:06:38. > :06:49.He's the Olympic holder from that very jump.

:06:50. > :06:51.On the third time of asking, I seem to remember.

:06:52. > :07:03.Seemed to have come down on that again.

:07:04. > :07:18.He's having a bit of fun now, surely.

:07:19. > :07:22.When he went over and did you see the X against my name?

:07:23. > :07:32.No, a clearances here would put him in the lead.

:07:33. > :07:35.So he has to go at this height of 6.03.

:07:36. > :07:40.Da Silva would have to go in the lead.

:07:41. > :07:53.He is desperately trying to get his body, very little he can do.

:07:54. > :08:01.His centre of gravity is on a predetermined path.

:08:02. > :08:03.All he can do is push his body around.

:08:04. > :08:05.That's the reaction of the French support,

:08:06. > :08:12.The penetration to get him exactly over that bar with his high point.

:08:13. > :08:26.The whole of Brazil will be egging this man, Da Silva to go clear.

:08:27. > :08:41.Have you ever seen drama such as this.

:08:42. > :08:43.Thiago Da Silva, takes it to Lavillenie, the

:08:44. > :08:51.It goes clear, a new national record!

:08:52. > :09:12.The crowd erupts as Da Silva goes clear with a new Brazilian record.

:09:13. > :09:18.How on earth has he done that, Steve!?

:09:19. > :09:20.Well, I've seen some things in my years competing

:09:21. > :09:25.That is going to be one of the best moments, home crowd, home boy,

:09:26. > :09:46.Look at the joy on that little boy's face.

:09:47. > :09:48.Congratulations from Sam Kendricks as well.

:09:49. > :09:50.Thiago Braz da Silva, a new Olympic record.

:09:51. > :10:00.Look at the reaction of the Brazilian crowd

:10:01. > :10:04.with the French holding their heads behind them.

:10:05. > :10:15.Lavillenie has passed his third attempt at this height.

:10:16. > :10:24.And if ever there was a man capable of going higher, it is Lavillenie.

:10:25. > :10:44.I mean, it was uttered, people whispered about

:10:45. > :10:53.Shaun Barber of Canada, and then fifth or sixth,

:10:54. > :11:00.Who knew that Brazil's new national sport?

:11:01. > :11:06.Four Olympic champions in the history of the athletics.

:11:07. > :11:09.Cruz in 1984, Da Silva in the triple jump, Maggie in the long jump.

:11:10. > :11:12.Has Thiago Braz da Silva joined them?

:11:13. > :11:16.He would only be the fifth man, the fourth person, I should say,

:11:17. > :11:24.the fifth gold medal in the history of Brazilian Olympic athletics.

:11:25. > :11:32.Most of the field events went down to the wire.

:11:33. > :11:35.In the discus, the last throw of the competition.

:11:36. > :11:57.Surprised that Da Silva don't go and ask the crowd to be quiet.

:11:58. > :12:01.Looks as though they have got to him.

:12:02. > :12:09.All the composure that he's ever been asked for is needed right now.

:12:10. > :12:12.Renaud Lavillenie... 6.08.

:12:13. > :12:21.Which means that Thiago Braz da Silva is confirmed

:12:22. > :12:50.A gold medal rewarded for one of the performances

:12:51. > :13:00.Steve, don't let anyone say to you that being

:13:01. > :13:16.It's driven this young man upwards and over to a gold medal for Brazil.

:13:17. > :13:19.And we keep talking during this Olympics here in the stadium,

:13:20. > :13:22.that when this sport get it is right, when it gets it right,

:13:23. > :13:25.when you have people like this, the stories, who knew the defending

:13:26. > :13:27.champion, Lavillenie, the number one in the world,

:13:28. > :13:30.coming all the way to Rio and they find a local boy to

:13:31. > :13:52.Thiago Braz da Silva, Olympic champion, and you know what?

:13:53. > :13:56.He's just put 11cm on his lifetime best.

:13:57. > :14:05.And let's not forget how difficult these conditions are.

:14:06. > :14:16.It's a full 3.5 hours, nearly, since the start of the competition.

:14:17. > :14:18.Disruption through rain, the athletes were removed

:14:19. > :14:21.from the stadium, taken into the bowels to stay warm.

:14:22. > :14:32.He looks flawless in the early heights.

:14:33. > :14:34.It looked like it was all going to his favour.

:14:35. > :14:51.The biggest name of the moment, the hour, the Brazilian,

:14:52. > :14:53.Olympic champion, Thiago Braz da Silva.

:14:54. > :14:59.Lavillenie is one of the most popular men in athletics.

:15:00. > :15:07.I was looking along the line, amongst all the media as usual,

:15:08. > :15:11.competing on Da Silva, and when he went over,

:15:12. > :15:30.But this man, the moment of his life, and maybe the moment

:15:31. > :15:34.World records, but locally, locally, this is what will

:15:35. > :15:52.under dog beating a reigning Olympic champion.

:15:53. > :15:57.He had a clean card right through to 95.98.

:15:58. > :15:59.Maybe would have thought that would've been enough to win.

:16:00. > :16:11.And yeah, you thought, you are brave in brackets,

:16:12. > :16:27.He couldn't win the gold medal, and he was guaranteed the silver,

:16:28. > :16:32.throw your lot in, let's give it a go.

:16:33. > :16:35.This will never happen again in my life.

:16:36. > :16:43.This opportunity will never come around again in my life.

:16:44. > :16:45.In my home track, home crowd, home games, a chance

:16:46. > :16:47.of a gold medal, a chance of sporting immortality,

:16:48. > :16:52.Well, the celebrations go on for Da Silva.

:16:53. > :17:07.Olympic record, Thiago Da Silva, 6:3.

:17:08. > :17:09.The gold medal, ahead of the previous Olympic champion,

:17:10. > :17:11.Renaud Lavillenie of France, and Sam Kendricks, a bronze,

:17:12. > :17:14.in what was the most thrilling of competitions so far

:17:15. > :17:29.Somebody one day may well make a Hollywood movie about the whole

:17:30. > :17:38.It was Biblical in terms of the rain coming down.

:17:39. > :17:41.They were all sent inside, that felt like another day, when that

:17:42. > :17:45.happened. They were sent inside,

:17:46. > :17:47.and they came back out again, and never in our wildest dreams,

:17:48. > :17:50.the bar was crawling up, we would ever see

:17:51. > :17:52.a competition like that. This is why as a child

:17:53. > :18:02.I watched athletics. Da Silva has beaten the master

:18:03. > :18:06.of composure, the man of the moment, and this is what this athletics

:18:07. > :18:10.crowd has stayed for. What will this do

:18:11. > :18:21.for these Olympics? Brazil was not blessed with medal

:18:22. > :18:27.winners so far. They haven't been blessed

:18:28. > :18:29.with much positive press Already been talk of not leaving

:18:30. > :18:34.a legacy or doing anything And there wasn't

:18:35. > :18:41.much public support. This will get people behind

:18:42. > :18:44.the Games and get the Brazilian public saying, hey, you know

:18:45. > :18:47.what, this is fantastic. It can be very uplifting

:18:48. > :18:50.for the Brazilian public. This will be the lasting image

:18:51. > :18:57.of the Games. Because they are having a very hard

:18:58. > :19:06.time in this country, a lot of them felt like there's no

:19:07. > :19:09.need for us, why are we They'll feel it was worth it

:19:10. > :19:15.after this moment. It's the head to head,

:19:16. > :19:20.the nature of that beautiful With Lavillenie, the Olympic

:19:21. > :19:24.champion, if you're going to win an Olympics at home,

:19:25. > :19:26.beat the reigning champion! It's the evidence of the advantage

:19:27. > :19:29.of home support, and the chance We talk about the legacy of 2012,

:19:30. > :19:46.and what super Saturday inspired. Tantalsising Tuesday,

:19:47. > :19:49.something like that. And the reaction from

:19:50. > :20:05.the crowd was, crying. A beautiful shot of a woman

:20:06. > :20:10.feeding her baby, it She's going to win a gold

:20:11. > :20:17.medal in athletics. This sport, that brings

:20:18. > :20:22.together people from every country of the world,

:20:23. > :20:26.and there they are, with a gold This is just a fantastic

:20:27. > :20:42.moment for the country. For this young athlete to have that

:20:43. > :20:45.moment at a home Olympics, I know what that feels like,

:20:46. > :20:53.and this will be something, I'm sure his family's here,

:20:54. > :20:55.his friends are watching and nobody really expected him,

:20:56. > :20:58.nobody expected him to come As the competition went on,

:20:59. > :21:10.and he kept going more confidence. He felt like he was in the bonus

:21:11. > :21:13.now. Once he got a medal,

:21:14. > :21:15.he was more confident He said, hey, I'm going to throw

:21:16. > :21:25.down a challenge to you. He was almost at a position

:21:26. > :21:28.of, I can't lose. That gives you the confidence

:21:29. > :21:31.to go what he did. We were talking to Sophie Hitchon

:21:32. > :21:35.earlier on about where His uncle, apparently

:21:36. > :21:47.that got his going. Your nation is very

:21:48. > :21:51.proud of you tonight. Well, it seems like a very long time

:21:52. > :21:55.ago, in fact, it was yesterday When she threw herself,

:21:56. > :22:04.she tripped and ended up with the most dramatic of finishes

:22:05. > :22:07.to beat Allyson Felix, looking to add to this

:22:08. > :22:11.clutch of medals. Three she won in London, three gold

:22:12. > :22:13.medals. And Shaunae Miller got herself up

:22:14. > :22:16.and spoke to Phil. Well, Shaunae, we can see

:22:17. > :22:18.the emotion all over your face. Congratulations on a wuld gold

:22:19. > :22:20.medal. I give God all the

:22:21. > :22:29.thanks and praise. He just brought me so far. It is an

:22:30. > :22:34.emotional moment for me. You had a chance to

:22:35. > :22:38.have a lap of honour. When you're going around the track,

:22:39. > :22:40.what kind of thoughts Like I said, give God

:22:41. > :22:46.all the thanks and praise. I told myself, this is the moment

:22:47. > :23:00.I've been waiting for. I promised my coach I was going

:23:01. > :23:05.to bring back the gold and now Kids are at home, and I want

:23:06. > :23:23.to give them a hug. You know something, it's such a big

:23:24. > :23:29.deal to the bam has athletes and when they --

:23:30. > :23:31.to the Bahamas athlete, When you land on the National

:23:32. > :23:41.airport, there is a wall of fame. They have only a handful

:23:42. > :23:50.of gold medals. Where the press are, there are about

:23:51. > :23:54.30 different people to speak to. What would she be

:23:55. > :23:57.like at the end of it? What an amazing evening

:23:58. > :24:03.we've had in here! A very long evening but some

:24:04. > :24:09.fantastic performances and that one for me,

:24:10. > :24:12.one of the moments of the Games, I believe, Shaunae Miller,

:24:13. > :24:15.showing what it's lake to almost lose that amazing moment and make

:24:16. > :24:18.sure you don't lose it. And David Rudisha, we had something

:24:19. > :24:23.else from him in London, and a world record, him running

:24:24. > :24:31.out in front. Tonight, the most extraordinary race

:24:32. > :24:33.in terms of the split times The only one back in the final that

:24:34. > :24:45.survived from the final in London. But it's more the way

:24:46. > :24:47.he dominated that race. And he controlled it,

:24:48. > :24:49.whatever they through at him, He kept his head, he kept his

:24:50. > :25:01.composure and able to kick harder down the back straight and that's

:25:02. > :25:04.where he won the race. The others don't have that strength

:25:05. > :25:07.to be able to do that. He was so badly injured

:25:08. > :25:09.a couple of years ago. But the legacy, it wasn't just that

:25:10. > :25:13.one moment in London. And tomorrow, Bolt is back

:25:14. > :25:23.in the house as well. I'm trying pretend

:25:24. > :25:35.it was still Monday! Wasn't it supposed to be the calm

:25:36. > :25:38.evening, where we collected Bolt in the house tomorrow,

:25:39. > :25:41.but tonight belonged to Thiago Da Silva, claimed Brazil's

:25:42. > :25:44.first athletics gold medal, expect to see his face splashed

:25:45. > :25:46.all over the national We missed the bus, by the way, we

:25:47. > :25:55.may as well stay here. And I've had a number

:25:56. > :26:04.of messages via Twitter. A lot of you stayed up for that

:26:05. > :26:07.pole vault final. Absolutely wonderful scenes in the

:26:08. > :26:10.Olympic Stadium. The Brazilian newspapers have a

:26:11. > :26:13.brand new superstar to lead with. Let's switch sports and turn our

:26:14. > :26:15.attention to hockey. Great Britain's women

:26:16. > :26:18.are loving it out here in Rio. Unbeaten so far, they claimed third,

:26:19. > :26:24.winning a bronze medal, and today, they were looking to book
