:01:00. > :01:16.Good afternoon, everybody, day 11 here. I am glad to say that we have

:01:17. > :01:22.blue skies over the city. I am not sure if you caught yesterday's rain

:01:23. > :01:28.that affected the athletics so much. As of yet, we have not got any

:01:29. > :01:34.drops. There is a risk of rain, so we have our waterproofs and shelter

:01:35. > :01:40.to hand. We are poised in case the sky decides to fall in. There is a

:01:41. > :01:44.real threat that Jason Kenny could impact upon the greatest British

:01:45. > :01:54.Olympians of all time. Have a look at the table.

:01:55. > :02:04.Another gold medal for Jason Kenny in the cave in, he will be up there

:02:05. > :02:11.with Sir Chris Hoy. Perhaps a knighthood on the cards for Jason

:02:12. > :02:18.Kenny. We shall see. He has a big race to come later. The music is

:02:19. > :02:21.sounding here in the Olympic Park, the party is already starting. Let's

:02:22. > :02:34.begin on day 11. Legendary status awaits Jason Kenny

:02:35. > :02:42.in the keirin, looking to add gold medal number six. His fiancee Laura

:02:43. > :02:48.Trott is also on track, in the on the. She leads the standings, can

:02:49. > :02:54.she add her fourth gold medal? Team and individual honours be decided in

:02:55. > :03:01.the show-jumping. I believe it is the show-jumping today, Nick Skelton

:03:02. > :03:06.leading the British charge. All Irish boxing hopes rest on the

:03:07. > :03:09.shoulders of Michael Conlan, the world champion going in the

:03:10. > :03:20.bantamweight category. We will be there later. And, the British pair

:03:21. > :03:21.are in dreamland, into the semifinals, could they add a

:03:22. > :04:01.badminton medal? It could be an historic day in the

:04:02. > :04:10.badminton. BBC One or into the marathon swimming.

:04:11. > :04:16.Can Great Britain come away with a medal? Later, the man who already

:04:17. > :04:22.has history in his pocket, the triple triple is still on for Usain

:04:23. > :04:31.Bolt, it is the heat of the 200 metres. For us, the party happening

:04:32. > :04:35.here in front of the Olympic rings. They arrive early, the doors open at

:04:36. > :04:40.8am, this is the first place that the fans want to come to. This man

:04:41. > :04:48.is even running, he wants to get in line. He has stopped right on cue!

:04:49. > :04:53.No worries, let's begin, Great Britain are hoping to end a 12 year

:04:54. > :04:57.wait for a badminton Olympic medal. It could come for Marcus Ellis and

:04:58. > :05:02.Chris Langridge. Uncharted territory both personally and for Great

:05:03. > :05:07.Britain, because it has been 12 years since they had a member in the

:05:08. > :05:09.semifinal stage. It was an emotional day yesterday. Here is how they did

:05:10. > :05:18.it. Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge

:05:19. > :05:20.take on the Japanese. They have done so well to get this far. Can they go

:05:21. > :05:36.one further? They are probing for opening. He is

:05:37. > :05:48.pretty powerful. He has been furious on some of those smashes. Fantastic

:05:49. > :05:56.defence. 46 strokes in 34 seconds, it was full of quality. Yes!

:05:57. > :06:08.Wonderful from Ellis. Two game points. How about that. Langridge

:06:09. > :06:22.with the finish, they have taken the opening game. Error after error.

:06:23. > :06:32.Yes. Once more, it is Ellis who fires it down. A good try from

:06:33. > :06:37.behind the back. Hope springing a game for the Japanese, just getting

:06:38. > :06:47.to eat into the lead. Can the Brits stop it here? The lead narrows. It

:06:48. > :06:59.has been halved now. Just missed. The lead has evaporated so quickly.

:07:00. > :07:10.Another monster rally. Langridge again with the punishment. Two

:07:11. > :07:16.points again away. What a miss. Expensive. Three points for the

:07:17. > :07:34.semifinal of the Olympic Games. It is out. The Brits are through.

:07:35. > :07:41.What a result. Such an emotive moment from the 22nd rank couple,

:07:42. > :07:46.beating the eighth best team in the world.

:07:47. > :07:49.Ellis and Langridge with the match of their lives, they are into the

:07:50. > :08:11.last four. It is semifinals day. We are going to show you the first

:08:12. > :08:16.women's doubles semifinal. The highest rank of all of the semifinal

:08:17. > :08:26.clashes, the number one seeds and the All-England championship winners

:08:27. > :09:18.of Japan, Takahashi and Matsutomo, against the Koreans, Shin and Jung.

:09:19. > :09:23.That is a beautifully worked first point. That is the patient play you

:09:24. > :10:01.might expect to see. Gifting an opportunity back to the

:10:02. > :11:19.Japanese pair. The first sign of trouble with the

:11:20. > :11:21.serve. It will be a challenge. The challenge is coming from the

:11:22. > :11:34.Koreans, the serve was called in, in fact. The review has been requested.

:11:35. > :12:21.Very nice play. Just mixing up the shop, changing things. Switching

:12:22. > :12:46.from power to the deft touch right at the net.

:12:47. > :12:54.Slightly overworked in trying to find the angle. A good start from

:12:55. > :13:05.the number four seeds. A powerful attack. Really going

:13:06. > :13:49.after the serve. Very well defended. Both of the

:13:50. > :16:06.Korean players... It has been a great start to this

:16:07. > :17:05.semifinal. That was beautifully played.

:17:06. > :17:11.Takahashi set it up really nicely and Matsutomo finished it off. A

:17:12. > :17:28.real variety of shots from Matsutomo and Takahashi.

:17:29. > :18:48.The mistake on the serve, and an apology.

:18:49. > :18:58.A potential opportunity, is that one went right into the net. The

:18:59. > :19:26.advantage for the Japanese. Well attacked. Intercepted really

:19:27. > :19:33.nicely at the net. And enthusiastic reaction on the Japanese fans. --

:19:34. > :19:37.from. Approaching the first mid-game interval. A bit of a turnaround.

:19:38. > :20:09.Shin and Jung took earlier control. It was the first one that was

:20:10. > :20:10.extremely, well, it reached around, from Jung. And the second was well

:20:11. > :20:45.judged. That one was not right on the angle.

:20:46. > :20:54.And the lead is 11-8 at the interval for Japan. A sturdy challenge coming

:20:55. > :20:55.in on Shin and Jung, but it is 11-8 at the first mid-game interval in

:20:56. > :21:24.this women's doubles semifinal. A 3-point lead for the number one

:21:25. > :21:44.seeds. Such quick movement, good coverage

:21:45. > :22:33.of the court. The point was so well set up into

:22:34. > :22:43.the body, made it hard to defend, and then decisively attacked.

:22:44. > :23:04.Japan are starting to take a bit of control. That was better.

:23:05. > :23:12.An important opportunity for the players from the Republic of Korea

:23:13. > :23:20.to hold on to serve for a while, and accumulates points. -- accumulate

:23:21. > :23:41.some points. It was well defended. The serve

:23:42. > :25:26.progresses back to Japan. That one was a tricky one for the

:25:27. > :25:31.Republic of Korea. The moment they had to play that one after they

:25:32. > :25:41.realised it was dropping in, they had to play it very late. Suddenly

:25:42. > :25:59.the point was at risk of being out of control. -- out of the control.

:26:00. > :26:19.That as well attacked. A number of occasions now that Jung has done the

:26:20. > :26:49.setup work. -- attack that the net, with Shin having done the setup.

:26:50. > :26:54.With the length of the rallies, it is not surprising there will be

:26:55. > :27:36.frequent changes of the shuttlecock. Good recovery, and it seemed to be

:27:37. > :27:39.in control of the pier for some time. Just a turnaround in the

:27:40. > :27:56.point. -- of the pair. It is at the moment we're Japan

:27:57. > :28:24.start to take control and move towards taking this opening game.

:28:25. > :28:40.That is such a lovely touch to finish off the point.

:28:41. > :29:21.That was such a difficult one to reach. Jung at full stretch.

:29:22. > :29:37.You feel that this is a really key opportunity for Shin and Jung.

:29:38. > :29:51.Trailing by four points. They need to capitalise on having the serve.

:29:52. > :30:02.They have to hold onto it. Jung to serve.

:30:03. > :30:09.It is one of the things that Japan have done so well in this opening

:30:10. > :30:22.game, taking back the serve really quickly.

:30:23. > :31:10.The Koreans will be grateful for that at this crucial point.

:31:11. > :31:28.He shot selection true both players in.

:31:29. > :31:41.Ferry world the skies. Just a couple of points needed.

:31:42. > :31:50.But not for the moment. An error on the serve at a very important

:31:51. > :32:14.moment. Was that a really crucial service

:32:15. > :32:22.ever? It would put them to the halfway

:32:23. > :33:22.point of the gold medal match. Great reactions, quick thinking.

:33:23. > :33:29.They have taken the opening game 21-16.

:33:30. > :33:39.First blood to the Japanese pair, winning the first game 20 1-16, one

:33:40. > :33:43.game needed to make it into the gold medal match. We join it in the

:33:44. > :34:00.second game, the number one seeds are leading.

:34:01. > :34:11.A stroke of fortune, great stretch by Takahashi hearing the point.

:34:12. > :34:27.The net coming into play. For the second game in a row, it is 11-8 in

:34:28. > :34:34.the mid-game interval. It is rather tough for that pair. Things were

:34:35. > :34:38.very much neck and neck. It was 8-8. It has moved away as we get to this

:34:39. > :34:56.crucial pause. They are looking very relaxed, the

:34:57. > :35:58.number one seeds. A moment of psychological

:35:59. > :36:06.importance, to get the first point after the interval. Especially when

:36:07. > :36:36.the points started to trickle away a bit before it.

:36:37. > :36:43.Jung's touch at the net was very precise. A lot of pressure from the

:36:44. > :37:23.Japanese pair. I have really come out fighting

:37:24. > :37:53.here, have career, after the interval.

:37:54. > :38:03.Excellent play at the net. Finding the opportunity. The net coming into

:38:04. > :38:56.play again. It is very good management of the

:38:57. > :39:21.key points. Starting to accelerate in the latter stages of the game.

:39:22. > :39:29.Opportunity now for the team from South Korea to hold onto the serve.

:39:30. > :40:02.It has not been their strongest suit in this match.

:40:03. > :40:14.The cap is found. The shuttle passes back to Japan.

:40:15. > :40:23.A place in the gold-medal match is at stake.

:40:24. > :40:28.The defeated pair will get the chance to go for bronze. For the

:40:29. > :40:46.winners, a guaranteed medal. That has left. They will make a

:40:47. > :40:51.challenge, the call was in. They have been successful with their

:40:52. > :41:03.challenges on both occasions so far. How is the judgment for this one?

:41:04. > :41:22.It will be a very anxious wait indeed.

:41:23. > :41:46.It just catches the line, it is in. Their first unsuccessful challenge.

:41:47. > :42:54.Quick reactions again from the Japanese pair. A key moment there,

:42:55. > :43:25.when Takahashi reached over the head to keep the point going on.

:43:26. > :43:32.Closing in on it now. They can feel it. Three points away from the

:43:33. > :43:51.gold-medal match, Japan. They have really given it a good

:43:52. > :44:53.fight. Have they got anything left to turn this around?

:44:54. > :45:05.Another marvellous rally. And it did seem as though the defence the

:45:06. > :45:09.Koreans put up was going to turn into something that they could take

:45:10. > :45:20.away for the point. But beautifully placed by Takahashi.

:45:21. > :47:19.Another great point. We have seen such terrific badminton.

:47:20. > :47:29.They have to produce their absolute best if they want this.

:47:30. > :48:00.But here is the big opportunity. It is the point to get into the gold

:48:01. > :48:07.medal match. Having had five opportunities.

:48:08. > :48:37.Takahashi will serve. The judgment is very good at such a

:48:38. > :48:46.high-pressure situation. Matsutomo and Takahashi will go for gold. They

:48:47. > :48:51.have won in straight games, to the delight of the Japanese fans. The

:48:52. > :48:57.world number one doubles pair have guaranteed themselves an Olympic

:48:58. > :49:02.medal. STUDIO: into the final, Japan, just

:49:03. > :49:06.like they did at London 2012. It was a different pair who won the medal

:49:07. > :49:12.four years ago, but they want to come away with gold this time

:49:13. > :49:17.around. Japan go through. And there is more badminton right now, this is

:49:18. > :49:24.the first of the men's doubles semifinals. As you can see, Malaysia

:49:25. > :49:31.and leading 13-10 in the first game. If you want to watch badminton, you

:49:32. > :49:38.know the score, the Red Button, or you can watch online or on the app,

:49:39. > :50:15.so many different ways. Though! A moment in the life of

:50:16. > :50:23.Laura Trott. We're heading into the velodrome shortly. You can see it

:50:24. > :50:27.there, positioned between real 2016 and the Olympic Park. We have

:50:28. > :50:32.already had three Olympic gold medals for Great Britain on the

:50:33. > :50:40.track, and Mark Cavendish has won a silver medal to add to the accolades

:50:41. > :50:44.he has won in the many's omnium. Laura Trott is also hoping to add

:50:45. > :50:50.gold medal number four. After the first three events, she's doing all

:50:51. > :50:58.right. World Champion Laura Trott Mega great start. The Belarussian

:50:59. > :51:07.gained a lap in the closing stages, but Laura Trott won the sprint for

:51:08. > :51:12.second. Event two, the individual pursuit is the favourite of Sarah

:51:13. > :51:18.Hammer, one of Laura Trott's rivals for gold.

:51:19. > :51:25.The final event was the elimination race, we're the Raiders sprint every

:51:26. > :51:31.two lapse, and the last rider over the line is eliminated. We join it

:51:32. > :51:44.with eight laps left. Laura Trott has a good sense, she

:51:45. > :51:49.senses the danger. Sarah Hammer has to make sure she is not eliminated.

:51:50. > :52:09.The rider out is the rider from Germany. She is making hard work of

:52:10. > :52:13.this, Sarah Hammer. By coming the Long Way round, it is an extra five

:52:14. > :52:22.metres every time. Laura Trott looks comfortable. This is the 12th sprint

:52:23. > :52:26.in the elimination rate, -- race, Laura Trott on the outside. The

:52:27. > :52:51.Belarussian rider, she is out. Laura Trott is in fourth place, and

:52:52. > :52:58.it looks like Sarah Hammer has just decided to read this from the back.

:52:59. > :53:01.It is going to be difficult for Sarah Hammer. She has someone on the

:53:02. > :53:28.inside. Dideriksen was boxed in. Laura Trott

:53:29. > :53:36.is moving alongside on the outside of the track. Edmonson opens up the

:53:37. > :53:40.sprint. Sarah Hammer is in big trouble in this particular sprint.

:53:41. > :53:57.Anette Edmonson is out. She played beautifully, but suddenly

:53:58. > :54:00.there was nowhere to go. Laura Trott is there for Great Britain, and

:54:01. > :54:07.Sarah Hammond has tried to take it from the front. She is in back

:54:08. > :54:27.position now, so she has it all to do. She needs to be more careful.

:54:28. > :54:30.Kirsten Wild is out, the Netherlands. Laura Trott does not

:54:31. > :54:38.look like she has been challenged. Just one more to go before the final

:54:39. > :54:47.sprint for the line. Laura Trott is still there for Great Britain, with

:54:48. > :54:53.Sarah Hammer for the United States and Jolien D'Hoore, who was a former

:54:54. > :54:55.team-mate. Laura Trott goes after the American. How much the Sarah

:54:56. > :55:14.Hammer have left? Easing over the line is Laura Trott.

:55:15. > :55:17.She might be out! It was very close. It is the American that is out,

:55:18. > :55:23.Sarah Hammer. So it is a head-to-head at the end, Sarah

:55:24. > :55:26.Hammer will finish third. It is Jolien D'Hoore and Laura Trott, one

:55:27. > :55:33.final sprint to see who will win the race. Laura Trott's consistency is

:55:34. > :55:44.remarkable. It is hers to lose. She has ridden fantastically. The sprint

:55:45. > :55:50.is on! Once more, Laura Trott shows that she is masterful when it comes

:55:51. > :55:55.to the elimination race. Nobody can touch her. The defending Olympic

:55:56. > :56:00.champion is absolutely flying here on the opening day of competition in

:56:01. > :56:07.the omnium, and she will end the first day in first place at the top

:56:08. > :56:16.of the standings. Jolien D'Hoore is second at the moment, on 110.

:56:17. > :56:41.we have Jill and Chris Hoy at track-side at the moment. She still

:56:42. > :56:48.has a lot to do. Just halfway through the omnium, so another three

:56:49. > :56:50.events. We saw her rolling round the track centre earlier on, warming up

:56:51. > :56:57.ahead of the competition. She looks very composed. She does. It has

:56:58. > :57:01.almost been the perfect start, apart from the scratch race she has been

:57:02. > :57:06.in the top of the field in all three events. She looks confident. The

:57:07. > :57:10.pursuit was most impressive so far. It will all come down to the points

:57:11. > :57:14.race, but it is hard to look beyond her for the gold medal. Before we

:57:15. > :57:19.concentrate on today, let us look back at last night on the Korean

:57:20. > :57:32.rider who crashed in the points race. Park crashed and he is out of

:57:33. > :57:40.hospital, I am pleased to report. There has been all sorts of

:57:41. > :57:44.speculation, rumours of appeals. I spoke to the UCI, who said the

:57:45. > :57:49.silver stance and said there is no appeal. They looked at the event and

:57:50. > :57:53.were happy that it was a racing incident. Yes, and the other

:57:54. > :57:58.competitors have said exactly the same thing about the crash, a racing

:57:59. > :58:05.incident, no malicious intent. It was Mark Cavendish's fault, he

:58:06. > :58:10.caused it, but it was with no intent. When you get to the top, you

:58:11. > :58:14.come back down, and you could potentially say that the Korean was

:58:15. > :58:18.to blame for not being vigilant enough to realise he was coming back

:58:19. > :58:21.down, but it is a shame for him not to finish the race and end up in

:58:22. > :58:27.hospital, but there was no real suggestion that Mark was going to

:58:28. > :58:36.lose his medal. Let us look at the schedule for today.

:58:37. > :58:47.We will see Becky James and Katie merchant, Becky is already a

:58:48. > :58:51.medallist in the kierin. We will see the climax of the omnium competition

:58:52. > :58:54.through to the last race this evening, which is the many's kierin

:58:55. > :58:59.final. We should speak about Jason Kenny. The possibility that he could

:59:00. > :59:05.equal your record of six gold medals today.

:59:06. > :59:10.Yes, it is incredible when you think about it, he has been quietly

:59:11. > :59:14.chipping away, he has five gold medals and a silver medal, it is

:59:15. > :59:18.incredible we do not speak about him or. Has performance has been

:59:19. > :59:22.impeccable so far. I expect him to win. Callum Skinner could

:59:23. > :59:29.potentially make the final and could be in the running for a medal as

:59:30. > :59:32.well. It is a less predictable event, there are more riders on

:59:33. > :59:38.you can never be sure of it. But he is looking good. Jason is so

:59:39. > :59:43.composed, he will not be thinking about six gold medals, he will just

:59:44. > :59:49.be thinking about doing the best kierin that he can. And now, the

:59:50. > :59:54.first round in the quarterfinal stage involving Becky James. Over to

:59:55. > :00:12.the commentators, Chris Boardman. Becky James from Great Britain will

:00:13. > :00:27.be first on the track, and the Chinese derided as the

:00:28. > :00:45.Both the British riders qualifying first and second, so both in

:00:46. > :00:50.fantastic form. That gave them the easiest ride through this

:00:51. > :00:56.competition. But now it is time for meeting the serious riders in the

:00:57. > :01:01.quarterfinals. And the toughest matches they will face. Given how

:01:02. > :01:06.she has performed so far, Becky James may not have expected to be up

:01:07. > :01:11.against the world champion in the last date, but that is the

:01:12. > :01:18.situation. She already has a silver medal from the keirin. A wonderful

:01:19. > :01:25.last lap, which took her from the back almost to the front. Could not

:01:26. > :01:38.quite overtake the Dutch rider, Elis Ligtlee.

:01:39. > :01:53.Why they go, with Zhong Tianshi on the front. This first lap of three.

:01:54. > :02:03.James trailing on this occasion. Just to reiterate, the riders have

:02:04. > :02:09.to use the shape of the track to try and gain an advantage, so we have

:02:10. > :02:12.height more in the banking stand in the Strait, which gives good

:02:13. > :02:18.acceleration. As you get into the banking, with the height columns

:02:19. > :02:25.extra distance, 26 metres further around the top. The riders will use

:02:26. > :02:34.those things, it is a blending of physics, with sheer horsepower. The

:02:35. > :02:38.rider at the back does not necessarily have a disadvantage.

:02:39. > :02:43.They have the potential to accelerate into slipstream and

:02:44. > :02:51.surprise. James gaining height. Her opponent obliged to do the same.

:02:52. > :02:55.Zhong Tianshi at the front, she came through a repechage, which also

:02:56. > :03:03.included the defending champion from Australia, Anna Meares. We are about

:03:04. > :03:08.to find out how much of a test this will be for Becky James, as they

:03:09. > :03:17.take the bell. She is keeping her height, showing confidence. Waiting

:03:18. > :03:22.until the right moment. Confidence, pace, speed, desire, here comes

:03:23. > :03:28.Becky James. It is tight, but she has it by half a wheel. There was

:03:29. > :03:35.something of a surprise, superior acceleration on the back straight. I

:03:36. > :03:38.was not expecting the second dash. The world champion was not about to

:03:39. > :03:42.give up the first race without a fight, and she took it all the way

:03:43. > :03:48.to the line. Becky James had to begin. Halfway down the back

:03:49. > :03:52.straight, she looked as though she was going to sail past and take a

:03:53. > :03:58.relatively straightforward victory, but not quite the case. Zhong

:03:59. > :04:02.Tianshi accelerated a game in the home straight, it was clever to hold

:04:03. > :04:08.something back. That bit of extra height from being on the outside was

:04:09. > :04:13.enough to see her cruise over the line. A good start from a British

:04:14. > :04:21.point of view, the sixth and final day in the velodrome. Becky James

:04:22. > :04:28.leads 1-0 in the best-of-3 quarterfinal. Katy Marchant is on

:04:29. > :04:31.the track now, against an experienced rider, Simona

:04:32. > :04:40.Krupeckaite from Lithuania. She was ranked 12th in the women's keirin. A

:04:41. > :04:44.two-time world champion. Let's see if she can do the same. Neither of

:04:45. > :04:52.the British riders have lost a match yet. Straight through, no repechage.

:04:53. > :04:56.The most efficient series they could have hoped for so far, thanks to

:04:57. > :05:03.those fast times in qualifying. It has been an impressive Olympic debut

:05:04. > :05:08.so far for Katy Marchant. Her and Callum Skinner look as though they

:05:09. > :05:12.have been here all their lives. They have fantastic coaching, the former

:05:13. > :05:17.world champion, the German sprint coach for Great Britain, getting on

:05:18. > :05:23.the track and going through tactical scenarios with them. Justin

:05:24. > :05:30.Greystoke, the New Zealander, the sprint coach. They really

:05:31. > :05:33.experienced team around them. The coaches will feel their decisions

:05:34. > :05:43.have been vindicated this year in their selection. Both Becky James

:05:44. > :05:51.and Katie Marchand so far looking so good. Simona Krupeckaite from

:05:52. > :05:59.Lithuania on the front on this opening lap. She is the former world

:06:00. > :06:08.champion in the 500 metres time trial and keirin. In 2009 and 2010

:06:09. > :06:11.she finished with a silver medal in the sprint World Championship on

:06:12. > :06:16.three occasions, never quite managed to stand on top of the podium. She

:06:17. > :06:22.was up against Anna Meares and Victoria Pendleton at their best. It

:06:23. > :06:28.looks like Katie Marchand would like to emulate the performance of Becky

:06:29. > :06:37.James, writing in a similar style, drawing up closer. Kicking back.

:06:38. > :06:41.Simona Krupeckaite put some backwoods pressure on the pedals to

:06:42. > :06:49.force to come through, but was aware of that one. Katy Marchant makes a

:06:50. > :06:53.move on the inside. A slight lapse of concentration from Simona

:06:54. > :07:01.Krupeckaite. She is going for a long one. We have only seen one of these

:07:02. > :07:06.in competition so far. She just tricked her into thinking she was

:07:07. > :07:14.easing. She is too far back, what a mistake there. Tactically astute

:07:15. > :07:20.from temp macro, you have to take your chance whenever it appears. She

:07:21. > :07:23.felt the door had been left ajar. She pushed it wide open and raced

:07:24. > :07:31.through. More experienced than her years. To be able to do that and

:07:32. > :07:35.change tactics instantaneously, looking at the scenario around her,

:07:36. > :07:41.that was really quite something. Expected to come back up the track

:07:42. > :07:48.again. She kept the pressure on and got the distance. Simona Krupeckaite

:07:49. > :07:52.nodded off to sleep and she paid the price, she will have to win the next

:07:53. > :07:59.match between them. Otherwise, Katy Marchant will go through to the

:08:00. > :08:03.semifinals. Both British riders with a victory on the board, one ride

:08:04. > :08:15.away from making it into the last four. The German has been the world

:08:16. > :08:19.champion in this event in two of the last three years, though she settled

:08:20. > :08:23.for a bronze earlier this year when the championships were held in

:08:24. > :08:32.London. A formidable competitor. Katie Marchand will head off the

:08:33. > :08:37.track and begin warming down. Lee Wai Sze, a bronze medal in the

:08:38. > :08:41.keirin in London four years ago, the finest ever's first ever cycling

:08:42. > :08:52.medal for Hong Kong. Kristina Vogel a gold medallist in

:08:53. > :09:04.the Olympic Games in the team sprint in 2012.

:09:05. > :09:13.One of the riders in the sprint events favouring the mirrored visor.

:09:14. > :09:20.Your opponent cannot see exactly where you are looking, you cannot

:09:21. > :09:24.tell about the element of surprise. Kristina Vogel was looking at her

:09:25. > :09:29.opponent, a bit like a boxer at a way in. You can see through the

:09:30. > :09:35.visor, she is glancing forward every now and again. Her competitor cannot

:09:36. > :09:41.see that, she cannot sense this is the moment to launch an attack. A

:09:42. > :09:47.different shape of helmet, because they are optimised for turning the

:09:48. > :09:52.head, looking behind. They are a compromise, because of the nature of

:09:53. > :10:01.the event. She starts to Speed Up. A quicker pace about this heat.

:10:02. > :10:09.Lee Wai Sze going for a tactic we do not seek quite often, right on the

:10:10. > :10:14.wheel. If she dies to one side or the other, she will be through

:10:15. > :10:20.quickly. But Kristina Vogel gets to control the pace, and when the

:10:21. > :10:24.sprint starts... That only gave Lee Wai Sze one way to go. Kristina

:10:25. > :10:40.Vogel leads the sprint. She will take this first ride.

:10:41. > :10:45.Interesting tactic. Lee Wai Sze had good exhilaration. The tactic was

:10:46. > :10:50.interesting, but you needed to change, give yourself room to

:10:51. > :10:55.exonerate. She did not do that. She was left with too much to do, she

:10:56. > :11:05.did not have the power to accelerate around the German. The first ride

:11:06. > :11:15.going to Kristina Vogel. The former world sprint champion.

:11:16. > :11:26.Next onto the track, Elis Ligtlee of the Netherlands, against Anastasiia

:11:27. > :11:37.Voinova from Russia. It should be a good match between them.

:11:38. > :11:47.Here is Elis Ligtlee. What an Olympic Games she has had. She

:11:48. > :11:52.already has a gold medal. Anything else now is a bonus. She can enjoy

:11:53. > :12:01.this competition. She goes in with excitement rather than fear. Her

:12:02. > :12:06.last years of work have already paid off, she just wants to see how far

:12:07. > :12:11.she can go. Anastasiia Voinova will have to find some form of weakness.

:12:12. > :12:15.She has the potential to go a long way, occurs she won silver in the

:12:16. > :12:20.World Championship last year. She has pedigree. Plus, the added

:12:21. > :12:28.confidence from the gold medal in the keirin. Elis Ligtlee on the

:12:29. > :12:33.front. Anastasiia Voinova had to settle for silver in the team

:12:34. > :12:40.sprint. Beaten by China. It has been a battle between those nations in

:12:41. > :12:46.the women's team sprint. I have been asked questions about why the riders

:12:47. > :12:51.look at aerodynamics and yet they pinned their numbers on. The riders

:12:52. > :12:57.are obliged to use two numbers, they cannot modify them, and they must

:12:58. > :13:04.use the ones supplied by the competition, but one way to get

:13:05. > :13:09.around it is the clear plastic pocket to try to smooth the airflow.

:13:10. > :13:13.I am surprised it has taken as long as it has to come up with that,

:13:14. > :13:17.because pinning numbers on is nightmarish. It undermines a lot of

:13:18. > :13:24.the work in the wind tunnel. We wanted to have a plastic panel on

:13:25. > :13:30.the suit to print the number on, exactly as the number appears, but

:13:31. > :13:32.we thought they would not like it. Then we looked at pockets, but we

:13:33. > :13:41.could not find the material that would stretch and survive what it

:13:42. > :13:48.needed to. But this is stuck on after the fact. Elis Ligtlee will

:13:49. > :13:52.want to control this one, she'd just not have the sharp acceleration of

:13:53. > :14:00.Anastasiia Voinova, but she has the top speed.

:14:01. > :14:09.Elis Ligtlee will be happy with this situation. But Anastasiia Voinova

:14:10. > :14:14.tries to make a move. She is beginning to close the gap.

:14:15. > :14:22.Anastasiia Voinova straining every sinew. She does not quite get it, it

:14:23. > :14:29.is Elis Ligtlee from benevolence. Not quite enough confidence to leave

:14:30. > :14:36.enough space. Anastasiia Voinova left some room, Elis Ligtlee was

:14:37. > :14:42.winding up nicely. But Elis Ligtlee had time to wind the engine up.

:14:43. > :14:50.Anastasiia Voinova a bit late in coming around. Timing as well as a

:14:51. > :14:55.slight physical difference between them. Here is the rider camera from

:14:56. > :15:07.the rear of Elis Ligtlee's bike. Slightly better tactics by

:15:08. > :15:17.Anastasiia Voinova, but alternately Elis Ligtlee is the stronger rider.

:15:18. > :15:24.When she gets going at is difficult to close the gap, as Voinova found.

:15:25. > :15:31.Ligtlee?, the gold medallist in the kierin, just one away from making it

:15:32. > :15:42.into the semifinals of the sprint as well. That brings to the conclusion

:15:43. > :15:47.the first races. Now, the men's kierin.

:15:48. > :15:53.We will see the British riders in action in the heats of the kierin,

:15:54. > :16:00.Callum Skinner Jason Kenny. Let us just reflect on the sprint. First we

:16:01. > :16:08.saw Becky James in action. A powerful ride. Yes, that was a

:16:09. > :16:16.particularly tough race against Tianshi. Becky just had too much

:16:17. > :16:22.speed. She knew she had it at this point. At the end it was relatively

:16:23. > :16:29.comfortable. They have really timed to perfection at these games. Some

:16:30. > :16:34.of the other other nations have not got it bang on. That is the biggest

:16:35. > :16:39.surprise of the games so far. The French, Germans, Australians have

:16:40. > :16:45.really underperformed, and are at a lower level than they were at at the

:16:46. > :16:48.World Championships. It is almost exaggerating the difference between

:16:49. > :16:53.the performance of the British, who have timed it to perfection, they

:16:54. > :16:55.have come here in the best shape of their lives. It is great from the

:16:56. > :17:04.British perspective. It is interesting. And Katie marching

:17:05. > :17:11.through as well. It is the best of three. -- Katy Marchant. Back to the

:17:12. > :17:29.commentators. Michael D'Almeida, won the bronze

:17:30. > :17:49.here. And we also have a tribulation sprint champion.

:17:50. > :17:59.And we have the current world champion, Eilers. It is who is on

:18:00. > :18:04.form right now that matters. Has Eilers got the form? We will find

:18:05. > :18:13.out in the next couple of minutes as the bike comes round to pick up the

:18:14. > :18:21.pace. It is an electric bike this time. More environmentally friendly.

:18:22. > :18:28.Riders will appreciate not having a face full of humans. You might be

:18:29. > :18:34.right! And then when you do the kierin, what is happening? Well, the

:18:35. > :18:38.bike controls the pace, and it will slowly accelerate up to a maximum of

:18:39. > :18:46.50 kilometres per hour. Three laps to go. At 2.5 laps to go, it will

:18:47. > :18:50.move out the way. Until then they are not allowed to pass or overlap

:18:51. > :18:58.it, and if they do they will be relegated. I will explain later the

:18:59. > :19:01.tactics they use to get around it. They have displayed close to it. If

:19:02. > :19:07.they are more than ten metres away, again the gun will be fired. Very

:19:08. > :19:17.tightly regulated, this one. At the moment, the order is Chaebin in the

:19:18. > :19:30.lead. Volikakis is third in the line. Then we have the third rider,

:19:31. > :19:36.Bos, with Eilers fifth in line,, then the young rider from Australia,

:19:37. > :19:46.Patrick Constable. Patrick Constable ran it well, despite the end result.

:19:47. > :19:52.He came to prominence on a global scale when he won the sprint in the

:19:53. > :19:56.Hong Kong round of the World Cup. People really sat up. They were just

:19:57. > :20:09.pipped for bronze in the team sprint, Australia, here. Before the

:20:10. > :20:21.bike 's wings off, they want to get the pace. Chaebin is not giving any

:20:22. > :20:34.thing. Back to Theo Bos. Volikakis level

:20:35. > :20:39.with the Dutch man. Michael D'Almeida leads the way. Eilers is

:20:40. > :20:50.in second place. Theo Bos will finish third. Michael D'Almeida was

:20:51. > :20:58.gifted that. A little castle in front end he got an easy ride. They

:20:59. > :21:01.are riding so quickly that it is... It is about qualification, so two

:21:02. > :21:07.riders are winning in this. Michael D'Almeida crossed the line first.

:21:08. > :21:13.Eilers was second. He's showed some form getting through the traffic,

:21:14. > :21:17.Eilers, and closing the gap. The other riders who were not in the

:21:18. > :21:26.first two are not automatically out, they going to the repechage. Michael

:21:27. > :21:33.D'Almeida happily coming through. A long way out to start the sprint. He

:21:34. > :21:39.was gifted it. Eilers was in from a long way back, he looked really

:21:40. > :21:43.good. He is clearly on form. He left his effort late but he had plenty

:21:44. > :21:55.left to come through in second place. Here is confirmation.

:21:56. > :22:03.Chaebin tried to do it the hard way from the front, and ended at the

:22:04. > :22:08.back of the field. We have four heats in this first round. The

:22:09. > :22:15.Russian rider tapping the screen, who is Denis Dmitriev. For viewers

:22:16. > :22:21.wondering what is going on, can you explain it? I'm not entirely sure,

:22:22. > :22:34.but I am guessing it is a new way of getting the draw, to see the start

:22:35. > :22:35.order. Yes, a lucky dip. Callum Skinner says, no, I'm in the next

:22:36. > :22:53.race! We have Zielinski from Poland. Jason

:22:54. > :23:00.Kenny is in heat four, Callum Skinner in heat three. The rider at

:23:01. > :23:10.the end was from Japan, Kazunari Watanabe. He's into his 30s now.

:23:11. > :23:16.There he is. We have the Commonwealth champion, Matthew

:23:17. > :23:28.Glaetzer. Fourth into macro events so far. Eddie Dawkins is a current

:23:29. > :23:41.world champion in the event, beaten in... We also have Pavel Kelemen

:23:42. > :23:57.from the Czech Republic, the 2015 European champion. Kang Dong-jin is

:23:58. > :24:03.in this line-up as well. Edward Dawkins is not afraid of riding

:24:04. > :24:10.quite robust race, shall we say. Not too much body contact is tolerated

:24:11. > :24:12.in this event nowadays, but there is some. As long as it is not

:24:13. > :24:24.intentional. In the first heat there were six

:24:25. > :24:26.riders. In the next three heats, there are seven. So it gets more

:24:27. > :25:00.tightly packed. We conceded see the Derley bike

:25:01. > :25:05.coming around the track. As it passes the will be released. -- can

:25:06. > :25:26.see the derny bike. Dawkins behind the motorbike, and

:25:27. > :25:35.Matthew Glaetzer in second, with Denis Dmitriev from Russia, and

:25:36. > :25:40.Pavel Kelemen. The Polish and Czech rider were elbowing each other a

:25:41. > :25:48.little. Kazunari Watanabe. Bringing up the rear is Pavel Kelemen from

:25:49. > :25:52.the Czech Republic. Some years ago the derny bike was allowed to go

:25:53. > :26:03.much faster, and so being directly behind it was a seedier -- serious

:26:04. > :26:09.advantage. Now it is regulated to 50 kilometres per hour, so it is more

:26:10. > :26:14.of a holding pattern, and this is a less strategic part of the race.

:26:15. > :26:23.There are seven men in this field, and it is an awful long way to come

:26:24. > :26:25.from the back, so no one wants to be there. First, second or third

:26:26. > :26:29.position is ideal as it starts, and someone is in front -- you have

:26:30. > :26:35.someone in front moving the wind out of the way to start with. They are

:26:36. > :26:41.the best positions. -- that is what we saw Michael D'Almeida do in the

:26:42. > :26:47.last heat. You can see the motor by going faster and faster. The riders

:26:48. > :26:51.are already having a look around to see who is where. Just over a lap to

:26:52. > :26:55.go, less than that now, before the derny pools of. Dawkins is using all

:26:56. > :27:01.of the ten metres that he is allowed. Now he can accelerate to

:27:02. > :27:07.keep the ball possession. He timed it perfectly but did not have the

:27:08. > :27:25.speed. Denis Dmitriev goes to the front.

:27:26. > :27:37.Matthew Glaetzer has to go the long way round. Zielinski did very well

:27:38. > :27:40.because he was the first rider over the line. Matthew Glaetzer was

:27:41. > :27:44.challenging him all the way. The good news is that they all managed

:27:45. > :27:49.to stay upright at the end of that intensely competitive heat. I was

:27:50. > :27:55.watching Dawkins all the way through. He had a lot of riders

:27:56. > :27:58.around him but had the inside track and appeal to sit on. He was just

:27:59. > :28:06.waiting and waiting. He came up the inside in the end to try to move

:28:07. > :28:12.forward but was not able to do it. Off the track as well. Pretty scary

:28:13. > :28:17.stuff because if he is not back on the track within two seconds when

:28:18. > :28:22.they hit the bend, he would crash. The commitment of these riders is

:28:23. > :28:30.remarkable. Damian Zielinski, the European sprint bronze medallist

:28:31. > :28:41.last year, did not perform -- performed surprisingly well given

:28:42. > :28:48.the field around him. A good ride from the Polish rider. And Matthew

:28:49. > :29:00.Glaetzer also qualifies. Heat three will shortly be on the track. Here

:29:01. > :29:10.is the starting list. Callum Skinner is in the field here. There is

:29:11. > :29:14.Callum Skinner sitting down there. On the very opening night, a gold

:29:15. > :29:20.medal in the team sprint, and he backed it up a silver in the final

:29:21. > :29:30.of the match sprint, beaten by his team-mate, Jason Kenny. A dream

:29:31. > :29:38.Olympic Games for him. Has first Olympic Games, but he always looks

:29:39. > :29:42.calm, and maybe it is spending a lot of time with Jason Kenny, who is a

:29:43. > :29:47.very neutral person. He is up against Awang, who we haven't seen

:29:48. > :29:54.yet. This is the competition he has come for. A flamboyant rider. He is

:29:55. > :30:01.good fun to watch. Yes, we will keep an eye on him. He got a silver medal

:30:02. > :30:10.in the World Championships in 2009. The first Malaysia and to win a

:30:11. > :30:18.track a track medal. Bid is Jason Kenny, he will be in heat four,

:30:19. > :30:23.after this race. Edward Dawkins just eased off and saw another

:30:24. > :30:27.opportunity. Yes, a gap opened up. He was trying to defend the second

:30:28. > :30:30.position but not getting boxed in, using his head to let the other

:30:31. > :30:40.riders know where he was. Callum Skinner about to begin his

:30:41. > :30:50.campaign in the keirin. In another high-quality field. Francois Pervis,

:30:51. > :30:54.two times the world champion. Azizulhasni Awang got two silvers

:30:55. > :31:00.and two bronze medals from the World Championship. Matthijs Buchli, third

:31:01. > :31:08.in the World Championship, three times.

:31:09. > :31:14.A little shot of the riders strapping in, the belt and braces

:31:15. > :31:19.approach to make sure they cannot pull a foot out. They wear

:31:20. > :31:26.custom-made shoes. That is largely because they cannot use over socks

:31:27. > :31:36.now to cover everything up. Even the shoes have had careful attention.

:31:37. > :31:40.They are super stiff as well. Can Krzysztof Maksel back-up the

:31:41. > :31:51.performance of his compatriot? This man looks unbeatable in the

:31:52. > :32:01.World Championships in Colombia in 2014 and in Paris last year. Not so

:32:02. > :32:08.good this year. And Matthijs Buchli will be a threat. Seven riders, a

:32:09. > :32:12.lot of quality sprinters, only two of them will go straight through.

:32:13. > :32:24.The others will have to go through a repechage. Such a dynamic event. The

:32:25. > :32:29.bike has pulled away, the race about to get under way. Callum Skinner,

:32:30. > :32:38.can he repeat his performance of the sprint in this event? Eight laps of

:32:39. > :32:45.the track. Getting the first spot, Sam Webster, in behind the journey.

:32:46. > :32:51.Matthijs Buchli on his wheel. Francois Pervis third in line.

:32:52. > :33:01.Azizulhasni Awang settling in. Callum Skinner in sixth. What we

:33:02. > :33:06.have seen already, riders at the back have the opportunity to start

:33:07. > :33:12.accelerating a lot earlier before the bike pulls off, to get

:33:13. > :33:16.themselves into their preferred positions, so they carry the speed

:33:17. > :33:22.as soon as the race opens up. That is a possible tactic here of Callum

:33:23. > :33:26.Skinner and Azizulhasni Awang. Azizulhasni Awang using the right

:33:27. > :33:29.wheel, he knows what Callum Skinner's tactics will be, he is

:33:30. > :33:35.hoping to be carried through. He has the ability to flit around among the

:33:36. > :33:42.wheels and make sure he is in a position to win a medal here. He has

:33:43. > :33:46.chosen his strategy, he is a clever rider, he can change tack ticks so

:33:47. > :33:52.quickly. It is critical in this event. Your plans instantly change

:33:53. > :34:02.as they bump into that of the other riders. This is the first round of

:34:03. > :34:10.the men's keirin. The third heat of four. Webster on the front for New

:34:11. > :34:13.Zealand, Matthijs Buchli behind him, Francois Pervis third. Then,

:34:14. > :34:26.Krzysztof Maksel. The pace increasing all the time.

:34:27. > :34:30.They will be racing next time, because the motorbike is swinging

:34:31. > :34:38.off. Callum Skinner leaving his charge late. You can see the rider

:34:39. > :34:49.from the Netherlands leaving himself some space to accelerate. Sam

:34:50. > :34:55.Webster has gone for an early one. Matthijs Buchli second, with

:34:56. > :35:00.daylight. Some Webster lead. Francois Pervis trying to close the

:35:01. > :35:06.gap. Callum Skinner does not have the legs. He will trail home in last

:35:07. > :35:09.place. Webster takes it on the line. A tight sprint between Matthijs

:35:10. > :35:14.Buchli and Francois Pervis for second place. I think it is Matthijs

:35:15. > :35:21.Buchli. Callum Skinner was not in the situation that he wanted to be

:35:22. > :35:24.to challenge at the front. I mentioned the different tactics

:35:25. > :35:30.bumping into each other, it was Matthijs Buchli, I laying off so

:35:31. > :35:36.much from some Webster, that caused the speed to be very high

:35:37. > :35:39.straightaway. The ability to rush from the back, the chance was taken

:35:40. > :35:46.away from Callum Skinner, he was pinned in place. Matthijs Buchli got

:35:47. > :35:53.it. You are right. There is the confirmation. It was close between

:35:54. > :35:59.the Dutchman and the Frenchman. Webster took it from the front and

:36:00. > :36:04.stayed there. Very businesslike at the start of this competition.

:36:05. > :36:07.Matthijs Buchli delighted to snatch second place. All of the others into

:36:08. > :36:30.the repechage. As they warm down, no brakes on

:36:31. > :36:41.these bikes, coming into the back straight, the final heat is starting

:36:42. > :36:47.to assemble. In there, Jason Kenny. Hoping to start his campaign to get

:36:48. > :36:52.a third gold medal. The Canadian the last two had up onto the track, he

:36:53. > :36:59.had a horrible crash, suffered a few broken bones. He was racing inside

:37:00. > :37:02.three months again. Here he is at the Olympic Games, Hugo Barrette,

:37:03. > :37:07.the first time we have seen him. That is the German rider, Maximilian

:37:08. > :37:16.Levy, the silver medallist in London, beaten in the epic final by

:37:17. > :37:21.Chris Hoy. Jason Kenny with two gold medals already this week in the

:37:22. > :37:27.sprint and the team sprint. Looking for a hat-trick. Starting that

:37:28. > :37:34.attempt here now. A shot of the carbon fibre shoes, custom fitted to

:37:35. > :37:40.each rider's but, to give maximum stiffness and aerodynamics. Every

:37:41. > :37:46.detail has been attended to. The world silver medallist in the keirin

:37:47. > :37:56.two days ago in Colombia, Fabian Hernando Puerta Zapata. -- two years

:37:57. > :38:02.ago. Yuta Wakimoto, a professional keirin racer, the former Asian

:38:03. > :38:15.champion. Matthew Baranoski, a triple national champion last year.

:38:16. > :38:21.Jason Kenny, --. And another rider from Venezuela, ten back row, a

:38:22. > :38:27.silver and two bronze medals in the Pan-American games. Then from

:38:28. > :38:32.Germany, vastly experienced, the former world champion in the keirin

:38:33. > :38:43.and the team sprint, Maximilian Levy. And Hugo Barrette, from

:38:44. > :38:45.Quebec. Maximilian Levy missed out on the podium at the World

:38:46. > :38:49.Championships, he will look to rectify that here. Seven on the

:38:50. > :39:05.track. A very busy scenario in the final

:39:06. > :39:13.couple of laps. The bike comes around, the race is under way.

:39:14. > :39:19.Hersony Canelon wants to get the position behind the bike. It worked

:39:20. > :39:25.well for Dawkins, he led from the front. Everybody thought he would

:39:26. > :39:32.die, but he held it nicely. Jason Kenny happy with fourth place at the

:39:33. > :39:44.moment. The Colombian, followed by Hugo Barrette. Maximilian Levy

:39:45. > :39:50.third, followed by Jason Kenny. The Japanese on the back of the train of

:39:51. > :39:55.riders. The bike getting up to speed, it increases with each

:39:56. > :40:00.passing lap. Webster, not Dawkins, I beg your pardon, who led out in the

:40:01. > :40:05.previous ride. It shows it can be won in several different ways. It is

:40:06. > :40:11.hard to work out the tactics, with such a large group. Jason Kenny

:40:12. > :40:15.right in the middle at the moment. When Chris Hoy was racing, he would

:40:16. > :40:20.often go to the front and power away and stay there. Hold people on the

:40:21. > :40:24.hip and accelerate every time they came into the straight. The big

:40:25. > :40:29.accelerations come in the straight, when it is easiest to pass. They

:40:30. > :40:37.have to go an extra three metres on the banking. It can be an extra

:40:38. > :40:40.five, so it is almost impossible. The leader is under threat on the

:40:41. > :40:46.straight, that is when they accelerate. Colombia on the front,

:40:47. > :40:54.then Hugo Barrette, followed by Maximilian Levy, then Jason Kenny.

:40:55. > :41:05.The Venezuelan behind him, followed by the American and the Japanese.

:41:06. > :41:12.Hersony Canelon has gone to the front, but Jason Kenny click to grab

:41:13. > :41:17.hold of the race. He has got some daylight now. Time to see where

:41:18. > :41:24.everybody else's. Hersony Canelon in second. Jason Kenny at the Bell,

:41:25. > :41:33.scorching around the track, leading the way. Maximilian Levy on the

:41:34. > :41:38.outside for Germany. Jason Kenny looking super-sharp, he crosses the

:41:39. > :41:48.line, with Fabian Hernando Puerta Zapata also in the top two. Jason

:41:49. > :41:52.Kenny just wanted to power it on. Get himself into pole position and

:41:53. > :41:56.sprint. That is what he did. Behind him they castle for second, but he

:41:57. > :42:02.made sure that the result was never in doubt. It was a scorching ride by

:42:03. > :42:10.Jason Kenny. What a piece of track craft. Rather dangerous, that it

:42:11. > :42:20.shows the courage of the riders. Kenny looking to his right, doing

:42:21. > :42:25.just enough to qualify. What a ride. Jason Kenny winning the four feet in

:42:26. > :42:30.the men's keirin, what a scorching ride.

:42:31. > :42:36.Jason Kenny through, Callum Skinner into the rapper Sarge. Jason Kenny

:42:37. > :42:41.has taken it by the scruff of the neck. He realised it was important

:42:42. > :42:42.to get to the front, he took the race on with just over two laps to

:42:43. > :42:51.go. The Venezuelan went up inside, a bit

:42:52. > :42:58.naughty. Jason realised there was danger. He turned on the power, take

:42:59. > :43:04.control, two laps to go. He feathered throttle a bit, not going

:43:05. > :43:09.full gas yet. That is when he is pouring it on. There is a move from

:43:10. > :43:14.the back, Fabian Hernando Puerta Zapata starts to approach, it is

:43:15. > :43:18.close on the line, but that was quite a controlled rider from Jason,

:43:19. > :43:25.he will be happy to get through without any problems. The silver

:43:26. > :43:32.medallist from London Maximilian Levy will have to go to the

:43:33. > :43:37.repechage. As will Callum Skinner. Some Webster wanted to push for a

:43:38. > :43:43.long one. It is the safest way to do it, control it from the front. He

:43:44. > :43:53.drove it. You can see the gap he opened up, driving hard. Matthijs

:43:54. > :43:57.Buchli keeping the gap, looking at Francois Pervis. It is the hardest

:43:58. > :44:01.way to do it, but it is the shortest and safest route, you will not get

:44:02. > :44:06.knocked off, it is a tactic I favoured. Francois Pervis just

:44:07. > :44:13.misses out in a photo finish for second. It is now the second race of

:44:14. > :44:18.the women's sprint, the quarterfinal stage, let's see how the British

:44:19. > :44:24.riders there. The second match in the best-of-3

:44:25. > :44:32.quarterfinal in the women's sprint, Becky James, from Abergavenny,

:44:33. > :44:38.leading 1-0. Against the current world champion. Becky James looked

:44:39. > :44:42.in control of the first race. But Zhong Tianshi put up a stubborn

:44:43. > :44:49.resistance in the finishing straight. Zhong Tianshi has shown

:44:50. > :44:55.her hand. It was a clever move to hold a bit back for the final

:44:56. > :45:01.corner. Becky James already have the speed coming round the outside. She

:45:02. > :45:07.made it close. We have seen all that both riders have got to offer. James

:45:08. > :45:12.is the favourite for this one. But as we have seen, it is close enough

:45:13. > :45:16.that there is no room for error at all. James leading out this time. A

:45:17. > :45:28.different type of sprint required here. Plenty of space being given.

:45:29. > :45:37.James keeps it down the bottom, so she only has to look at one side.

:45:38. > :45:42.Living up to give herself the ability to accelerate using the

:45:43. > :45:53.shape of the track. Keeping the speed, slowly increasing it.

:45:54. > :45:58.Detention and speed ratchet up. Becky James will be through to the

:45:59. > :46:05.semifinals if she can win this race. She will try to win this from the

:46:06. > :46:13.front. Tianshi looks to draw level even before they get to the banking.

:46:14. > :46:18.Becky James is scrapping. Yes! Becky James is through in straight rides

:46:19. > :46:23.through to the semifinal of the women's sprint. It was nicely done.

:46:24. > :46:33.The race was on the back straight. She just holds her off until the

:46:34. > :46:37.final bend. Before the final bend it was clear who was going to get it.

:46:38. > :46:42.It was a fight all the way to the line. It was. Two straight rides,

:46:43. > :46:47.and no wonder she is smiling. She does not have to go to the third and

:46:48. > :46:52.deciding race, and she has also knocked out the current world

:46:53. > :46:55.champion. Riding up against the red line so she could move down and get

:46:56. > :47:04.a tiny bit of acceleration in the home straight. Such high speeds.

:47:05. > :47:11.Always fascinating to watch. A British rider through to the last

:47:12. > :47:25.four. While she slowly comes to a halt and prepares, Katie March --

:47:26. > :47:35.Katy Marchant will be on in a second. Krupeckaite is that three

:47:36. > :47:42.times medallist in this event. In the first matchup, she nodded off to

:47:43. > :47:46.sleep for half a second, and Katy Marchant saw the opportunity. Early

:47:47. > :47:51.as it was, she was still prepared to take it. We have only seen that once

:47:52. > :47:56.before in this competition and it is the sign of a world-class sprinter

:47:57. > :48:01.that you can have your plan then adapt in an instant, depending on

:48:02. > :48:10.the situation that presents itself. Maturity beyond her years is what we

:48:11. > :48:15.saw. Can she do the same again? It is what is so good about sprinting

:48:16. > :48:26.is the mixture of pure speed, nerve, tactical acumen. The beauty of a

:48:27. > :48:30.surprise tactic like that, or an extra benefit, is that your

:48:31. > :48:33.opposition has not really had a look at everything you have got to offer.

:48:34. > :48:39.You keep them guessing. Not quite sure what you're going to do next.

:48:40. > :48:48.The speed is increasing early on this, as they come around with two

:48:49. > :48:52.laps to go. Krupeckaite getting some height is no. Trying to push Katy

:48:53. > :48:59.Marchant into leading out early, dipping up and down the track. Here

:49:00. > :49:03.we go, if Katy Marchant wins this she will also be back to the last

:49:04. > :49:21.four. But Krupeckaite will not let it go. Katie -- Katy Marchant gets

:49:22. > :49:24.it! A superb! In straight rides, she joins Becky James in the last four

:49:25. > :49:32.of the women's sprint. Incredible. Krupeckaite made a mistake, again a

:49:33. > :49:36.tactical mistake, being drawn onto the wheel. No slipstream to use to

:49:37. > :49:43.accelerate, and when she stepped out into the wind, she was barely equal

:49:44. > :49:46.on power and could not move forward. She was two links down and could do

:49:47. > :49:52.nothing about it. I bet even Katy Marchant could not quite believe how

:49:53. > :49:59.easily she won that second race. She is up against strong competition

:50:00. > :50:04.here. Clearly at home, the form is there on the confidence is coming,

:50:05. > :50:09.and rightly so. The way she is riding is fantastic. Both British

:50:10. > :50:18.riders are through in the women's sprint. Two quarterfinal second

:50:19. > :50:23.keeps coming up, and the next one will be on the track any moment.

:50:24. > :50:32.Katy Marchant is receiving a few cheers in the arena. Next up, Lee

:50:33. > :50:38.Wai Sze from Hong Kong, and Kristina Vogel from Germany. Vogel won the

:50:39. > :50:51.first race, so she is just one away from the last four. Lee Wai Sze had

:50:52. > :50:56.the exhilaration, but it was the experience of Katrina Vogel. She did

:50:57. > :51:05.not allow her to play to her strengths. She has a good pedigree,

:51:06. > :51:13.Lee Wai Sze. The former world champion. 500 metre time trial.

:51:14. > :51:22.Three years ago she crashed in the kierin semi-finals -- earlier this

:51:23. > :51:25.week she fell, and she fell in the semifinals at the end of the back

:51:26. > :51:28.straight. Fortunately not seriously injured, and able to continue with

:51:29. > :51:45.this event. But she has got to win this race now. Vogel, two times

:51:46. > :51:49.world champion, in the white. She works as a part-time police officer.

:51:50. > :52:14.One of the stars of world cycling. Lee Wai Sze, the bronze medallist in

:52:15. > :52:19.the Olympics four years ago, which was won by Victoria Pendleton. She

:52:20. > :52:25.looks in good shape. Vogel has seen the strong kick, and will probably

:52:26. > :52:28.not want to be dictated to, because if she uses that then the back

:52:29. > :52:33.straight with half a lap to go, it will be difficult to come around.

:52:34. > :52:37.Vogel trying to push her into starting the sprint early. Beautiful

:52:38. > :52:45.tactical move. That is what she needed to do. Vogel saw her chance

:52:46. > :52:48.and grabbed it. She forces her opponent higher up the track. She

:52:49. > :52:54.nearly touches the back wheel. Fortunately they are both still

:52:55. > :53:02.upright. Kristina Vogel takes it in straight rides. That was tactically

:53:03. > :53:08.very interesting, and Lee Wai Sze was just a few inches away from

:53:09. > :53:16.ending up on the deck. Yes, it was high-risk, I am not sure it is

:53:17. > :53:18.tactically astute. As soon as you have lost the pole position, you

:53:19. > :53:23.need to create some space so that you can rush down the slipstream and

:53:24. > :53:29.come around the outside. Kristina Vogel knew she had to get in

:53:30. > :53:33.control, and she did it beautifully. This is the moment she needed to

:53:34. > :53:39.come off the wheel and give herself some space. She had been sucked in

:53:40. > :53:43.by Vogel. She thought about going down the outside but that was never

:53:44. > :53:56.going to happen. Her experience showed through.

:53:57. > :54:04.So the first three heats in the women's quarterfinals have all been

:54:05. > :54:20.won in straight rides. What will be the case in heat four, between Elis

:54:21. > :54:28.Ligtlee and Anastasiia Voinova? Elis Ligtlee is leading 1-0. She is

:54:29. > :54:38.having a fantastic games, already a gold medal. Voinova will be

:54:39. > :54:42.thinking, what do I have to do? I am wondering that myself, because Elis

:54:43. > :54:47.Ligtlee controlled the last. Voinova has a slightly sharper kick, but

:54:48. > :54:54.Elis Ligtlee has such a powerful engine. I do not know what she can

:54:55. > :55:09.do, really. Perhaps take a leaf out of Kristina Vogel's book. It was

:55:10. > :55:21.close, down to three hundredths of a second on the line. Constantly

:55:22. > :55:22.keeping an eye on her opponent here. Early walking pace in this first

:55:23. > :55:36.half lap. Studiously Voinova is sticking with

:55:37. > :55:41.the old-fashioned double strap design, high drag way to make sure

:55:42. > :55:49.your feet do not come out of the pedals. It is old school. Elis

:55:50. > :55:54.Ligtlee is using the high strap, it spreads the load and is more

:55:55. > :55:58.streamlined. Little details for you! They all add up and make the

:55:59. > :56:05.difference in the end. You would know that more than most. Marginal

:56:06. > :56:13.gains. Only the athlete can deal with the pressure of the situation

:56:14. > :56:19.-- who can deal with the pressure of the situation. Elis Ligtlee would

:56:20. > :56:28.like to be in control for this. Voinova knows that letting her get

:56:29. > :56:32.in control would be difficult. Now they take the bell. The sprint is

:56:33. > :56:49.on. Elis Ligtlee has drawn level. Elis

:56:50. > :56:57.Ligtlee gets it on the line, I think! It was very, very close.

:56:58. > :57:04.Voinova did exactly what she had to do, used her superior kick, left it

:57:05. > :57:09.to the last straight, but not enough. Elis Ligtlee timed it

:57:10. > :57:14.perfectly, kept accelerating round the outside and waited. How close

:57:15. > :57:21.was this? We're about to see once again. But Elis Ligtlee did not

:57:22. > :57:31.panic, kept the height to the last second and gave herself time to

:57:32. > :57:35.move. She was able to accelerate into the slipstream, so even when

:57:36. > :57:38.Voinova kicked in the back straight, Elis Ligtlee already had the

:57:39. > :57:49.exhilaration, which is what it came down to. Close, but it was enough.

:57:50. > :57:56.There we are. Elis Ligtlee is also through to the semifinals. All four

:57:57. > :58:09.quarterfinals where won in straight rides. Becky

:58:10. > :58:18.James, Katy Marchant, Kristina Vogel and Elis Ligtlee.

:58:19. > :58:27.Could Lightning be striking twice? Well, it is a guaranteed medal

:58:28. > :58:31.already, and Becky has been riding well. Katy Marchant, against one of

:58:32. > :58:38.the most experienced riders in the field is exceptional. This is Becky

:58:39. > :58:43.James's ride, she has held off the incredible Chinese rider. Becky have

:58:44. > :58:52.the inside line, and she dug deep for the line. That was a tough race.

:58:53. > :58:57.11.2, very fast. She will take a lot of confidence out of that. Yes, that

:58:58. > :59:05.was a tough quarterfinal, and I bet last night she was having a

:59:06. > :59:08.sleepless night, that was a potential stumbling block. Katy

:59:09. > :59:20.Marchant, she was also more impressive in terms of racing

:59:21. > :59:26.against Krupeckaite, really wily competitor. Katy Marchant has not

:59:27. > :59:32.been racing in the sprint for a long. To learn the tactics and deal

:59:33. > :59:36.with the complexity of this event, she has really impressed me so far.

:59:37. > :59:40.Let us look ahead to the semifinals. We will see Katy Marchant ticking on

:59:41. > :59:55.Kristina Vogel, the German sprinter, seven times world champion. A very

:59:56. > :00:01.strong sprinter. Becky James will take on Elis Ligtlee. She is like a

:00:05. > :00:07.does not have the same top speed and acceleration that Becky James is

:00:08. > :00:14.God. She needs to make sure she does not get caught in a long drag race

:00:15. > :00:19.which could potentially be playing into her favour. -- Becky James is

:00:20. > :00:22.good. Kristina Vogel is very wily, she has a few tricks up our sleeve,

:00:23. > :00:26.but you do not want to let her get close to you, so she can get you

:00:27. > :00:30.into defence and prevent you making of. Katy Marchant has to give

:00:31. > :00:37.herself some space to run onto her and use her powder. The semifinals

:00:45. > :00:49.her on the Crown. She is bidding for a fourth Olympic medal.

:00:50. > :00:56.The thing I love the most is that adrenaline when I walk into the

:00:57. > :01:01.Velodrome. When I get on my bike, I'm sat there with my helmet on,

:01:02. > :01:06.that's it, I'm ready. People get scared by beeps. The countdown, the

:01:07. > :01:17.for me, I love that feeling. I know this is the race now, it's just me

:01:18. > :01:22.and my bike. I never believed that I would go to 2012. It was always, you

:01:23. > :01:27.would go to Rio for the experience and then target Tokyo for your gold

:01:28. > :01:31.medal. For everything to happen so fast, it was incredible. I was on

:01:32. > :01:34.this train and it was getting quicker and quicker and all of a

:01:35. > :01:39.sudden I was at the Olympic Games. My achievements in London just blew

:01:40. > :01:43.me away. The team pursuit was my main target, we worked so hard, we

:01:44. > :01:48.lived in each other's pockets for the year and a half that I was on

:01:49. > :01:52.the team. For it to all come together, I just felt like, those

:01:53. > :01:55.are my girls, we've done it, we've achieved this massive thing.

:01:56. > :02:01.COMMENTATOR: Great Britain win the Olympic title! Going again in the

:02:02. > :02:05.me, I got really stressed in the first race, it felt like MS did

:02:06. > :02:10.that. My dad told me just get on with it, it doesn't matter what

:02:11. > :02:14.happens, just do the best I can do. When I crossed the finish line and

:02:15. > :02:18.looked up and saw I had won the 500 and Sarah Hammer had come forth, I

:02:19. > :02:22.just didn't know what to think. All of a sudden I was a double Olympic

:02:23. > :02:27.champion. I was just numb, I couldn't believe it had happened to

:02:28. > :02:32.me. It's those two years after the Games that I found difficult, to be

:02:33. > :02:38.honest. Just having that change, being in such a golden era of London

:02:39. > :02:42.2012 to this system of having to put the hard work in again, it was

:02:43. > :02:46.difficult and something I struggled with. The build-up starts again and

:02:47. > :02:51.you start to get that Olympic fever about it again and it's a really

:02:52. > :02:54.nice feeling and you start to see new kit and team members and you get

:02:55. > :02:57.an idea of who the Olympic team will be added to just a really nice bars.

:02:58. > :03:03.Laura Trott crosses the line as the world champion! It is Olympic year

:03:04. > :03:08.and it's all going swimmingly so far. The World Championships for me

:03:09. > :03:13.this year were incredible. I finally got the gold medal back in the Omni.

:03:14. > :03:18.It felt like a massive achievement. People say, you've won gold medals

:03:19. > :03:24.in the past, but because I had finished Silver three is in a row

:03:25. > :03:31.and felt it was like a long time coming. -- I had got silver three

:03:32. > :03:40.years in a row. Nobody knew about me and Jason. He's a sprinter and I'm

:03:41. > :03:47.insurance. It's nice that he can be there. I know a lot of couples would

:03:48. > :03:52.be like, it's distracting, but it's not, it's great. He's such a huge

:03:53. > :03:57.support for me. Four weeks is a long time not to have him there. It's a

:03:58. > :04:02.long time not to have my dogs there! Not to have Jason there, I feel like

:04:03. > :04:05.I really wouldn't enjoy it. It's remarkable to think that between

:04:06. > :04:17.them they may have ten gold medals by the end of today! Where'er

:04:18. > :04:29.they going to keep them all! Not at home, or if they are, locked in a

:04:30. > :04:34.very safe place! It is realistic to think they could both finished today

:04:35. > :04:41.with gold medals. Laura has looked very strong in every event she has

:04:42. > :04:44.stepped onto the track. Even Laura's weakest event, she still seems to be

:04:45. > :04:49.dominating. It's quite incredible. We expect her to do well in the

:04:50. > :04:52.elimination race but to dominate the pursuit in the way she did was

:04:53. > :04:59.really unexpected from my position anyway. I don't think she thought

:05:00. > :05:08.she was going to do it in 3.25. That's a second off the Olympic

:05:09. > :05:21.record. She's getting herself up for the 500 metres time trial. Pay

:05:22. > :05:26.different bike than she uses in the points race and scratch race. You

:05:27. > :05:33.don't want to jinx her but you can't see anybody beating her. The points

:05:34. > :05:38.race, there are risks with crashes and you can make mistakes but she

:05:39. > :05:47.just seems to be sharp mentally as well as physically. It's a great

:05:48. > :05:50.position to be in if she can go in in front and defend her position,

:05:51. > :05:56.rather than having to attack attack attack. In the Omni, it's about the

:05:57. > :06:00.recovery as much as anything. It's a huge ask to do six events over two

:06:01. > :06:02.days. It's the mental side of it as much as the physical side, being

:06:03. > :06:06.able to concentrate on one specific thing like a flying lap and then

:06:07. > :06:08.switching your focus to a really multifaceted bunch race. Very

:06:09. > :06:14.different skills required and mentally you have to be so sharp not

:06:15. > :06:19.to dwell on the mistakes. Like Hanson when he made the mistake in

:06:20. > :06:23.the 11 nation race, not to dwell on that and keep thinking if I hadn't

:06:24. > :06:30.made that mistake I would be up there, you have to be able to move

:06:31. > :06:33.on and live in the now. We will see her in action in the final heat as

:06:34. > :06:38.she is leading the competition at this stage. We are now heading into,

:06:39. > :06:46.let me just check, heat number four. COMMENTATOR: Daria Pikulik from

:06:47. > :06:57.Poland on the other side of the tracks. Pikulik, world junior points

:06:58. > :07:07.champion. Still finding her feet at this highest level of elite senior

:07:08. > :07:18.competition. Mejias from Cuba on the right. The fastest time so far set

:07:19. > :07:28.by the Japanese athlete. I think it's possible that the Olympic

:07:29. > :07:34.record could fall in this session. The 23-year-old had a top ten finish

:07:35. > :07:38.in the World Championship this year. She went out of the lamination

:07:39. > :07:41.raised earlier than she would have liked and that really frustrated

:07:42. > :07:52.her, hoping to make amends with a decent ride here. Third quickest so

:07:53. > :07:57.far, for the Cuban. Just outside the time of the Japanese rider,

:07:58. > :08:03.fractions of a second in it at the top of the leaderboard. An event

:08:04. > :08:13.that lasts little over half a minute, it is hundreds of thousands

:08:14. > :08:14.of seconds that -- hundreds or thousands of seconds that makes a

:08:15. > :08:30.difference. This event was won in the time of 35

:08:31. > :08:36.dead by Annette Edmondson. In a little while we will see her but I

:08:37. > :08:40.think we're going -- you're going to need to go considerably faster here

:08:41. > :08:53.if you want to win out in this discipline. Anna Knauer, the former

:08:54. > :09:00.world junior champion, in the omnium. Laurie Berthon, the silver

:09:01. > :09:03.medallist in the World Championship this year but at the moment she

:09:04. > :09:12.finds herself down in nine days. These riders ninth and tenth in the

:09:13. > :09:19.18 rider standings. Laurie Berthon was second in this particular

:09:20. > :09:25.discipline, edging out Laura Trott. At that World Championships, Trott

:09:26. > :09:33.was third in the 500 metres. Showed such incredible form here. This is

:09:34. > :09:38.one of their favoured event, in which she does have form, and we've

:09:39. > :09:52.seen nothing but in this Olympic games. Heat five of nine under way.

:09:53. > :10:02.The first lap of two here now. This is Berthon of France.

:10:03. > :10:23.On the last lap now and coming up towards the line, Berthon gasping

:10:24. > :10:27.for air! 35.275, the fastest time. As Chris was saying, Laurie Berthon

:10:28. > :10:32.was really going to go for it in this one. It's a quick time, I don't

:10:33. > :10:36.know if it will be quick enough. People have been asking what are the

:10:37. > :10:40.British doing to be able to people like this but in a lot of cases it

:10:41. > :10:43.is other riders not living up to their own potential and not

:10:44. > :10:50.performing as they were six months ago. This is a big event for her,

:10:51. > :10:54.she knows she can score some valuable points in this one, not

:10:55. > :10:59.quite as quick as she was in that World Championship. There is Laura

:11:00. > :11:05.Trott, just making final preparations. She's just a a few

:11:06. > :11:11.minutes away from her ride. Annette Edmondson against Lauren Ellis next.

:11:12. > :11:17.Hannah Eddie Jackson and then hit number nine, Laura Trott and Jolie

:11:18. > :11:32.and door -- Jolene door. Fourth in the team pursuit in the

:11:33. > :11:40.Olympic Games. That is Annette Edmondson who was the world champion

:11:41. > :11:45.last year. Really good technique out of the blocks. Ellis more of an

:11:46. > :11:51.insurance rider, not too keen on this discipline. Edmondson won this

:11:52. > :11:59.event in the World Championships. She will be looking for a high score

:12:00. > :12:04.here. She's been fifth, seventh and sixth in the event so far. She will

:12:05. > :12:08.be looking to improve on that in this 500 metres time trial. Solid

:12:09. > :12:15.start from her. 20.3 was her opening lap in that World Championship 's. I

:12:16. > :12:21.was sure we would see someone dipped under 20 seconds here but it hasn't

:12:22. > :12:33.happened yet. They take the bell and it's the second fastest time so far

:12:34. > :12:38.for her, 11th fastest fall Ellis. Annette Edmondson coming up towards

:12:39. > :12:45.the line. 34.938 is the fastest we've seen so far. C has produced a

:12:46. > :12:48.better time in the World Championships at least, so producing

:12:49. > :12:57.the goods when it matters, she will be fairly happy with that, I think.

:12:58. > :13:03.Although she had that fastest discipline in the world is, I'm not

:13:04. > :13:07.sure that will be enough here. The record set by Anna Meares in Athens

:13:08. > :13:25.in 2004. The world record is 32.7. Slowly working our way through the

:13:26. > :13:33.field now and we have just three more pairs of riders. Heat seven of

:13:34. > :13:36.nine, next on the track is Tatsiana Sharakova and Kirsten Wild from the

:13:37. > :13:55.Netherlands. A world champion on the track. She's an injury and is rider,

:13:56. > :13:59.isn't she? There is Sharakova, she won the opening ride and it has put

:14:00. > :14:08.her into fifth overall, first, tenth and seventh in the event so far. I

:14:09. > :14:15.don't think we will see great times from these two, they are more at the

:14:16. > :14:16.endurance end of the spectrum. Kirsten Wild, seventh in the World

:14:17. > :14:29.Championship in London. It is an all-out, flat out effort

:14:30. > :14:36.for two laps here, for these two. Good start for Wild. She threw her

:14:37. > :14:40.weight forward to get down to the gate. It might not be her favoured

:14:41. > :14:47.event but she has been working on technique. Got some work to do,

:14:48. > :14:51.though. I imagine she just wants to get this one out of the way and she

:14:52. > :14:57.will be much happier in the next race. The pair of them well down the

:14:58. > :15:04.leaderboard, around the halfway mark, 12th and 14th fastest times so

:15:05. > :15:10.far. Up towards the line, Kirsten Wild tenth fastest, Sharakova 14th

:15:11. > :15:16.fastest. That's about in line with the form book and that is the

:15:17. > :15:19.problem with the omnium event, you don't have to be the best but you

:15:20. > :15:24.have to be close in every single discipline. And generally Laura

:15:25. > :15:25.Trott is. Well, this is probably Laura Trott's favoured event of the

:15:26. > :15:43.time the rounds. We are going to avoid in the middle

:15:44. > :15:46.positions and next will be Sarah Hammer, silver medallist four years

:15:47. > :15:50.ago and Amalie Dideriksen from Denmark. Sarah Hammer in the bronze

:15:51. > :15:55.medal position, fourth, second, third is over, very consistent. Ten

:15:56. > :16:04.behind Laura Trott. Dietrich Saint is fourth just now on 92. -- did it

:16:05. > :16:08.sent. Sarah Hammer found herself tracked on the inside earlier, she

:16:09. > :16:15.is in great sickle Sarah Hammer also likes this event, she is an injury

:16:16. > :16:24.'s rider but Paul's passion into it. -- endurance. Not stylish to look

:16:25. > :16:27.at. But she really gets it out the gate. These bikes are a strange,

:16:28. > :16:33.quite a few comments on the chain set on the inside rather than the

:16:34. > :16:37.outside because of some kind of aerodynamic advantage. Your opinion

:16:38. > :16:41.being on that? The most marginal marginal gains of anything. We

:16:42. > :16:46.looked at it ten years ago and decided not to bother.

:16:47. > :17:00.The ritual comedy seen in the West -- Aliji Jackson -- Amalie

:17:01. > :17:03.Dideriksen in the red. Look at the aggression. She almost ripped the

:17:04. > :17:06.handlebars of the front of the bike were she got going. Let's look at

:17:07. > :17:13.the time for Sarah Hammer. Sixth fastest. Amalie Dideriksen away down

:17:14. > :17:17.the field. She was tend at the World Championships. Not a favourite

:17:18. > :17:23.event, but pouring passion in. It doesn't matter that it's not the

:17:24. > :17:26.favourite comic she needs it badly. She has the third fastest time, I

:17:27. > :17:29.really good effort from Sarah Hammer, not her favourite event but

:17:30. > :17:36.as you can see she is more than happy with that. Very much so, she

:17:37. > :17:39.has gone one second faster than she did at the World Championships,

:17:40. > :17:44.which is an enormous improvement in a race that lasts just over half a

:17:45. > :17:49.minute. Not good for Amalie Dideriksen of Denmark, fourth going

:17:50. > :17:53.into this race and her time now is 16th fastest, it is likely to be

:17:54. > :17:58.slower, she will finish last in this event. Something of a disaster for

:17:59. > :18:10.her, you conceived by her form she is an Injera 's rider but Hammer is

:18:11. > :18:17.delighted. -- and endurance. Hammer wanted to stay in touch for the

:18:18. > :18:20.points race. And now she has its close enough for the points race. To

:18:21. > :18:26.think they will look forward to this? They will relish this event.

:18:27. > :18:30.Laura is a real competitor as well tuned everyone else out, technically

:18:31. > :18:37.excellent at the start. Great acceleration. She is small and very

:18:38. > :18:43.ever dynamic when she's up to speed, all of the team pursuit training

:18:44. > :18:45.lends itself to technicalities in this event, we've already seen her

:18:46. > :18:48.in the middle of the track practising the standing start effort

:18:49. > :18:58.on the rollers with the sprint coaches open the bike so she can put

:18:59. > :19:04.the power down. Jolien D'hoore on the other side of the track. Ten

:19:05. > :19:09.seconds to go. Third in this event at the World Championships, Trott, I

:19:10. > :19:13.think she will be under the 35 second mark. Away they go out of the

:19:14. > :19:18.blocks, two riders in the gold and silver medal positions. The feisty

:19:19. > :19:25.form of Laura Trott driving out of the gate, what can she do for this

:19:26. > :19:28.opening half lap? 20.1 at the World Championships. She will want to be

:19:29. > :19:34.quicker than that she can. Can she go on 20? No. The fourth fastest

:19:35. > :19:39.time for Laura Trott, she has to step on the gas. She is halfway down

:19:40. > :19:43.the back straight, Laura Trott has two reading into trying it out every

:19:44. > :19:50.thousands of a second she possibly can as she tosses the line. Second

:19:51. > :19:57.fastest time, she gained a couple of places on that final 250 metres. Not

:19:58. > :20:02.running as quickly as I thought, I thought Edmondson's time would be

:20:03. > :20:06.beaten but it shows you on the day, the only rider to slide under the

:20:07. > :20:12.age of five seconds, solid ride by Trott but consistency is key. In the

:20:13. > :20:20.four events so far Laura Trott has finished second, first, first, and

:20:21. > :20:25.second. The most resistant she could hope for -- consistent. She will go

:20:26. > :20:30.into the final points race in great shape, she has a 16 point lead over

:20:31. > :20:34.rival, Sarah Hammer, who is in a bronze medal position. Laura Trott

:20:35. > :20:39.just winding down on the inside of the track, she is leading this

:20:40. > :20:47.women's omnium four races down, two to go, 156 points. Jolien D'hoore in

:20:48. > :20:54.the silver medal position on 144, 12 behind her and for points behind in

:20:55. > :20:58.bronze, Sarah Hammer from the USA. Laura Trott has put herself in a

:20:59. > :21:03.fantastic position going into the points race later. Chris Lloyd let

:21:04. > :21:09.out a great week when you saw that time because that is a superb time

:21:10. > :21:15.from Laura? She was only down in fourth, the Belgian rider was ahead

:21:16. > :21:20.of her and it is about your position relative to the main rivals and the

:21:21. > :21:25.Belgian was ahead always half a lap to go. But Laura hung onto it much

:21:26. > :21:28.better and finished strongly and obviously has finished second. You

:21:29. > :21:34.can see at that point she is a fraction down on the Belgian, great

:21:35. > :21:38.ride from her as well. A bit ragged, you want to be as smooth as possible

:21:39. > :21:44.and take the shortest route on the black line but Laura hung on until

:21:45. > :21:48.the end, with the bigger 35.2, nothing in it but it is the

:21:49. > :21:56.fractions make a difference as she will be pleased, not her strongest

:21:57. > :22:00.event. Sarah Hammer perhaps a little bit, I think she will be pleased to

:22:01. > :22:04.see how fast she went, she has improved remarkably since the World

:22:05. > :22:08.Championships. Significant since then, we keep saying it will come

:22:09. > :22:12.down to the points race at the end, there is still the flying lap to go,

:22:13. > :22:20.but the gap between law and arrive this opening up now, significant,

:22:21. > :22:25.and 12 points to second place, 16 to third, you look at Sarah Hammer's

:22:26. > :22:30.500 metre effort, habit or I did, you will see she has a long way to

:22:31. > :22:34.the red line, she is a physical rider and that is one tenth the

:22:35. > :22:39.second, you can lose that by wavering off the black line, it is

:22:40. > :22:42.not just about physical output, it is your technique as well. We saw

:22:43. > :22:47.the British sprinters heading back to the to relax before the

:22:48. > :22:52.culmination of their events later. Jason Kenney said hello after his

:22:53. > :22:55.key ring, he looks in good spirits. He looks relaxed, there is always

:22:56. > :23:01.the relief after the first round, you don't want to have got the

:23:02. > :23:04.Ripper charge, one last ride, he rode well and confidently from the

:23:05. > :23:08.front and I said you got a get to the front tonight and take it on and

:23:09. > :23:12.stay out of trouble, he has the legs. You tend to get stuck in the

:23:13. > :23:19.pack when you don't have the confidence of all from the front and

:23:20. > :23:22.he certainly has the form. - tacitly reigning Olympic champion can give

:23:23. > :23:26.top tips to Jason Kenney in search of his sixth gold medal before

:23:27. > :23:31.heading to the village. Great to see him. Karen Skinner, the only rider

:23:32. > :23:37.from GB still to ride here in this morning session is in the repechage.

:23:38. > :23:41.We will bring you news of that awhile. Thank you, things going

:23:42. > :23:45.nicely for the British riders and some fans making their way out of

:23:46. > :23:49.the velodrome to see their next Olympic action, I think we're

:23:50. > :23:53.heading that way to Deodoro and the National Equestrian Centre. McKenzie

:23:54. > :23:59.is there. The riders are rising our golden wave, what can jumpers do?

:24:00. > :24:04.This is the start of the team competition, we had some jumping on

:24:05. > :24:07.Sunday to sort out the order for the team competition, this is a very

:24:08. > :24:13.tricky course, not only is its technical but very tight as well,

:24:14. > :24:22.the first rider is Nick Skelton and Ecstar, -- Big Star who got called

:24:23. > :24:30.in London 2012. The man" who helped Britain to team called in London,

:24:31. > :24:33.now 58 years old with Ecstar -- Big Star, has a lot of time off and has

:24:34. > :24:39.been nursed back, jumped a really good round, only four faults on

:24:40. > :25:04.Sunday. First for Great Britain. Big Star and Nick Skelton.

:25:05. > :25:12.Big Star showing his class down the culmination. He is the ultimate

:25:13. > :25:15.athletes, this course. 13 years old. Fantastic stallion, quick start. He

:25:16. > :25:41.does not want to get time faults. Big Star really moving around these

:25:42. > :25:54.corners. He is well on target to be inside the time. Turns into this

:25:55. > :26:01.final jump. This last double, come on, you can do it. Inside the time.

:26:02. > :26:06.What around. They've given him for. I think it was for the water. --

:26:07. > :26:14.four. We need to look at that again because it looked OK. He jumped

:26:15. > :26:19.superbly. Let's see if we can get a replay on the water in a moment for

:26:20. > :26:27.you. Fantastic flair, here is the water. Did he drop one back? That is

:26:28. > :26:37.desperately close, I cannot believe he has been given Nat. -- that. Nick

:26:38. > :26:41.will be frustrated, I will speak to him in a few minutes and you'll see

:26:42. > :26:48.that later the programme. Exits Ben Maher, back to you for an hour. --

:26:49. > :26:54.next is. Thank you, we are jumping sports and jumping venues quickly.

:26:55. > :27:01.John infidel is in the pavilion as the great Irish hope is getting

:27:02. > :27:06.ready to take to the ring. We are waiting for Michael Conlan to

:27:07. > :27:12.compete for Ireland. Stephen Watson is here, this is our massive fight

:27:13. > :27:17.coming not just for Michael, but for your nation? It is a very important

:27:18. > :27:22.fight for team Ireland, just one medal so far, came here with high

:27:23. > :27:27.expectations in the boxing, perhaps three, four, even five medals and so

:27:28. > :27:32.far it started badly before punch was thrown when Michael Riley Field

:27:33. > :27:35.of drugs test. He since admitted he could -- he taped -- to supplement

:27:36. > :27:39.that could contain a banned substance. That had a bad impact,

:27:40. > :27:44.you can tell the body language in the team has not been good. Paddy

:27:45. > :27:47.Barnes, double make it -- Olympic bronze medallist, lost his opening

:27:48. > :27:50.fight, tip for medal and admitted he was struggling to make the weight

:27:51. > :27:56.and was fighting in the wrong weight division. Brendan Irvine was

:27:57. > :28:00.probably fighting as a heavy for him, it has not gone well for team

:28:01. > :28:05.Ireland, Katie Taylor, of course, losing yesterday, the golden girl of

:28:06. > :28:08.team Ireland, distraught after her loss was not how was that reported

:28:09. > :28:15.on? Probably differently wherever you read or listen to the report?

:28:16. > :28:20.Katie Taylor is such a popular figure, they probably reporting the

:28:21. > :28:23.boxing theme -- team thinking it was controversial and she was robbed,

:28:24. > :28:26.because it it was tight, there's lots going on in her life

:28:27. > :28:31.behind-the-scenes since London 2012, she has lost fights this year and

:28:32. > :28:35.certainly there were questions as to whether she would win a medal or not

:28:36. > :28:39.and yesterday it all came to fruition. This is the worst-case

:28:40. > :28:43.scenario, let's not wish this on the Irish team, you have a chance a

:28:44. > :28:47.medal in the sailing and boxing here, if the Irish team went home

:28:48. > :28:53.with just a solitary medal through the order brothers in the rowing,

:28:54. > :28:57.that leads to the kind of review that the British team had after

:28:58. > :29:01.Atlanta in 96? July to think so, team Ireland have come here and won

:29:02. > :29:05.medals before, so one medal is better than that but they will have

:29:06. > :29:09.come here with a much higher expectation, probably three or four

:29:10. > :29:14.medals across three or four different sports. A lot rests on

:29:15. > :29:16.Michael Conlan today, he is a European and world champion and the

:29:17. > :29:20.Last Man Standing match, the Last Man Standing match the World

:29:21. > :29:23.Championships as well and he has his dad in his corner, one of the

:29:24. > :29:27.coaches with the boxing team and I hope he can put all of what has

:29:28. > :29:30.happened to the rest of the team, the other seven fighters have all

:29:31. > :29:35.been beaten and I hope today he can do the business for team Ireland.

:29:36. > :29:44.Stay with us, let what Michael in action in his first round.

:29:45. > :29:51.Michael Conlan. The man wearing red is the Irish representative, number

:29:52. > :29:54.one seed, Michael Conlan. Looking for it to seem common for the first

:29:55. > :30:00.time in these games. Current world champion in fantastic form. That was

:30:01. > :30:07.a fantastic right from Conlan. He stood toe to toe and box his fight.

:30:08. > :30:15.Common came back with a right hand over the top. Conlan once again

:30:16. > :30:19.accommodated him in an exchange, delight amongst the Irish

:30:20. > :30:23.supporters. Michael Conlan's quest for Olympic gold in the 56 kilograms

:30:24. > :30:27.bantamweight division is after fantastic start. Now one win away

:30:28. > :30:33.from the second excessive Olympic medal. He is fighting a Russian in a

:30:34. > :30:45.few moments. Controversy at this boxing

:30:46. > :30:51.championship so far, the men's heavyweight match last night which

:30:52. > :31:01.was won by a Russian over a Kazakis. I suspect that 7000 of the 7500

:31:02. > :31:12.people didn't agree and the 500 who did were Kazakhstan fans. I think

:31:13. > :31:16.since then Michael has matured into a much better fighter. There's no

:31:17. > :31:21.doubt that he is the best boxing talent within Team Ireland. He is

:31:22. > :31:24.not arrogant in any way but he certainly cocky and he believes in

:31:25. > :31:28.himself and he has talked about winning a gold medal for the last

:31:29. > :31:31.two years, every time I have interviewed him. Now is the time

:31:32. > :31:34.he's going to have to stand up and deliver. Behind the time he's going

:31:35. > :31:36.to have to stand up and deliver. Behind-the-scenes, our team Ireland

:31:37. > :31:44.privately worried about the judging today? Probably yes. After what

:31:45. > :31:49.happened yesterday with the Russian. Just tell us a bit about him and

:31:50. > :31:52.where he's from and his background? He's a great young fellow from

:31:53. > :31:56.Belfast, born and bred there and that is where he has learned all of

:31:57. > :32:00.his trade. His dad is in the corner with him, which, I don't know what

:32:01. > :32:03.that kind of dynamic is like, whether that's difficult or not but

:32:04. > :32:08.they certainly seem to have a very good bond and Vince London 2012 when

:32:09. > :32:14.he got a bronze medal he has developed into a fine boxer. I know

:32:15. > :32:17.he is highly regarded and he went to the World Championship and turned in

:32:18. > :32:21.a fine performance there. The first Irish boxer ever to win a world

:32:22. > :32:26.amateur championship, that is the kind of pedigree we're dealing with

:32:27. > :32:37.with Michael Conlon. He will have a good support. Thanks a lot for your

:32:38. > :32:42.time. There is a big Irish contingent on the far side here, as

:32:43. > :32:46.Michael Conlan comes to the ring and as Stephen was saying, this is a

:32:47. > :32:50.huge event, not just from the perspective of Michael Conlan as an

:32:51. > :32:54.individual and as a team come his backroom squad, but for the whole of

:32:55. > :32:58.the team. To describe this for us, Ritchie and

:32:59. > :33:21.is philosophy is not a single step back. He's demonstrated that in his

:33:22. > :33:30.two contests to date, the World Championship silver medallist from

:33:31. > :33:35.2013. An exclusively front foot fighter. He qualified for this, his

:33:36. > :33:37.first Olympic Games, by his season five ranking, that tournament

:33:38. > :33:50.contested over five rounds. ANNOUNCER: Introducing the boxer in

:33:51. > :34:06.the red corner, representing Ireland... Michael Conlan!

:34:07. > :34:10.Introducing the boxer in the blue corner, representing the Russian

:34:11. > :34:35.Federation... Vladimir Nikitin! REFEREE: Boxers. Listen to my

:34:36. > :34:47.commands. Keep your hands up, your punches up, no holding. Good luck.

:34:48. > :35:00.We are at the quarterfinal stage of the 56 kilograms bantamweight

:35:01. > :35:05.tournament. It is between boxers seeded number one and number eight.

:35:06. > :35:09.The man wearing red and representing Ireland is Michael Conlan, the

:35:10. > :35:13.number one seed, the World Championship gold medallist. He is

:35:14. > :35:19.making a very brisk start, scoring with quick starts. Vladimir Nikitin

:35:20. > :35:29.wearing blue, picked off by a long jab again. He is the number eight

:35:30. > :35:37.seed. He had a good first round -- he had a victory over a boxer from

:35:38. > :35:40.van der Vaart two and many observers felt he was lucky to get a split

:35:41. > :35:45.decision victory over his next opponent.

:35:46. > :35:54.This is where he wants the contest. Michael Conlan. Adept at fighting

:35:55. > :35:59.inside, outside, so many tools in his locker. These two men have met

:36:00. > :36:04.once before during the aforementioned run to the World

:36:05. > :36:11.Championships. On that occasion it was Niktin who prevailed at the

:36:12. > :36:15.quarterfinal stage. He is very strong but also very predictable,

:36:16. > :36:23.Conlan. I would stash of Nikitin. I would say that Conlan is very -- a

:36:24. > :36:30.very improved boxer. He's up against an who is very determined. I think

:36:31. > :36:35.there's a cut, there is a bit of blood on Conlan, probably from the

:36:36. > :36:39.side of Nikitin's head, but he is boxing well at the start, Conlan,

:36:40. > :36:43.keeping his distance but he can also trade on the inside as good as

:36:44. > :36:48.anyone, and that is why he is a world champion Todd White his first

:36:49. > :36:52.appearance for years go down at 52 kilograms, Michael Conlan. One win

:36:53. > :37:00.away from the bronze medal podium here, but given his run of form and

:37:01. > :37:04.the development of his talent and attentional, just evading a left

:37:05. > :37:08.hook and look at the way Conlan blocked that shot with his right

:37:09. > :37:17.hand. Bringing that right glove up to the temple and blocking the

:37:18. > :37:22.attempted shot that came his way. Look at the reddening, not from the

:37:23. > :37:29.blood but from the punches of Michael Conlan. Got the timing spot

:37:30. > :37:35.on as well here, Conlan, as Nikitin comes forward. Sometimes he's

:37:36. > :37:40.beating him to the punch, keeping him at bay with that jab. A good

:37:41. > :37:46.round for the Irishman here. Not getting involved, sensibly. He's

:37:47. > :37:54.demonstrating hitting and moving. He's done well in this round, the

:37:55. > :37:57.man in red. As we've pointed out throughout the tournament, sometimes

:37:58. > :38:01.you have to make a stand and drive your opponent backwards, showing the

:38:02. > :38:07.judges that he won't be overawed and showing your opponent, listen, it's

:38:08. > :38:13.not going to be all you coming forwards, I'm going to drive you

:38:14. > :38:26.back sometimes. Brilliant opening round from Michael Conlan.

:38:27. > :38:36.His coach just saying use the jab, keep his distance a bit more. He is

:38:37. > :38:42.trading with his opponent and catching Nikitin at his own game.

:38:43. > :38:48.He's probably getting through the better shots there, Conlan. But I

:38:49. > :38:53.like the style of the hit and move from Conlan, hitting your opponent

:38:54. > :38:58.and getting hit. My goodness! I just don't see how that can be scored

:38:59. > :39:06.that way. Conlan scored much the better. Woods -- they are probably

:39:07. > :39:12.rewarding Nikitin for coming forward. So, we go into a second

:39:13. > :39:15.round where Michael Conlan, the reigning World Championship gold

:39:16. > :39:19.medallist, the bronze medallist at 52 kilograms from four years ago, he

:39:20. > :39:22.boxed wonderfully in the opening round, exhibiting hitting and

:39:23. > :39:26.moving, accommodating the man in blue in toto exchanges and driving

:39:27. > :39:30.him backwards and at the kink lose in the three minutes, the three

:39:31. > :39:34.judges, using a point system, selected randomly from the five

:39:35. > :39:39.seats at ringside, have scored the opening round in favour of Vladimir

:39:40. > :39:43.Nikitin! I find that absolutely astonishing and I don't know if word

:39:44. > :39:49.will have made its way back to the red corner, but Michael Conlan is

:39:50. > :39:55.trailing by 1.0 cross all three cards after a very good opening

:39:56. > :40:00.round. Conlan is a thinking fighter as well. He's now starting stand and

:40:01. > :40:05.trade. He will do and straight here that he can box on the inside as

:40:06. > :40:09.good as anyone, Conlan. He is strong, Conlan, but he will have two

:40:10. > :40:20.probably take a view shots to land them. If he lost that opening round

:40:21. > :40:22.the way he did, he's probably more concerned about the way Nikitin

:40:23. > :40:29.wants him to box. But I am astonished after that first round.

:40:30. > :40:35.If the two men continue to trade blows in the centre of the ring...

:40:36. > :40:40.If you're going to reward pressure, the key adjective that has to serve

:40:41. > :40:44.as a perfect song that is effective. Back to the action and this is

:40:45. > :40:49.hammer and tongs punching being demonstrated by these two boxers.

:40:50. > :40:55.But again, we have to bear in mind the status of the contest. Cracking

:40:56. > :40:58.right hands from Conlan. We have to bear... Another one causes Nikitin

:40:59. > :41:04.to dip. We have to bear in mind the status of the contest, coming into

:41:05. > :41:08.the second round. The doctor being called to clean the blood, which we

:41:09. > :41:13.are assuming is from the injury on the side of Nikitin's head, rather

:41:14. > :41:18.than an injury sustained by Conlan, who has suffered from cuts --

:41:19. > :41:29.suffered with cuts in the past. The great Alexander Levy act in the

:41:30. > :41:35.front of this shot... And now he is being called to treat this injury,

:41:36. > :41:39.the doctor, that Vladimir Nikitin brought into the contest. He

:41:40. > :41:55.sustained it in his first round bout against the man from Vanuatu. You

:41:56. > :42:00.saw Conlan, here he goes. He is trying to catch him with bigger and

:42:01. > :42:05.heavier punches. He is driving the man in blue back. Nikitin playing

:42:06. > :42:09.his part in a furious exchange. Nikitin has had an injury to his

:42:10. > :42:16.left eye as well as to the side of his head. It looks as though a new

:42:17. > :42:20.injury has been sustained. By this tenacious little terror of a boxer

:42:21. > :42:25.from Russia, as well as the injury hit entered the boxing ring with

:42:26. > :42:28.their peers to be a new eye injury that needs to be solved by the

:42:29. > :42:35.doctor. Will we see the appearance of the cut man? Most definitely now

:42:36. > :42:40.Conlan has changed suit. I think the corner or someone has told him he is

:42:41. > :42:48.behind and he has totally changed his tactics now, looking for power

:42:49. > :42:53.shots. He had a good first round and he should have won it. Now Conlan on

:42:54. > :42:58.the back foot, good ride handcuffing the shaven head of Nikitin. Going

:42:59. > :43:06.for the same shot once more. Nikitin, his face reduced to eight

:43:07. > :43:11.bloody, gory mess here but still picking his punches well. Good work

:43:12. > :43:22.to the body. The left hook misses from Nikitin. Eating a left jab from

:43:23. > :43:26.Conlan. And again, Nikitin made to miss by a country mile. The right

:43:27. > :43:33.hand around the corner wasn't too far-away, and it is the weary,

:43:34. > :43:37.dispirited looking Nikitin who makes his way back to the blue corner.

:43:38. > :43:46.We're going to wait and reserve judgment on these scorecards for the

:43:47. > :43:51.second round. For Conlan here, definitely a change in his tactics,

:43:52. > :43:55.looking for heavier shots. That brings Nikitin into the bout even

:43:56. > :44:01.more. I thought he landed with better shots, he pushed Nikitin back

:44:02. > :44:10.occasionally. He also showed the judges he can box on the inside, but

:44:11. > :44:14.he was strong enough. Conlan gets it across-the-board! Now then, it's all

:44:15. > :44:29.on the last round. It shouldn't be, but it is.

:44:30. > :44:36.So, into the third and final round we go and the boxer who will

:44:37. > :44:39.progress through to the medal stages and the final four of the Olympic

:44:40. > :44:43.bantamweight tournament will be determined by the outcome of this

:44:44. > :44:49.three minutes. Look at the manner in which Nikitin has begun the round,

:44:50. > :44:54.holding on, breathing heavily. And Conlan, he looks far fresher. Can he

:44:55. > :45:00.make that freshness count and demonstrate the immense talents he

:45:01. > :45:04.possesses. Left hook to the body from Nikitin wasn't too far-away but

:45:05. > :45:09.the man whose philosophy is not a single step back doesn't appear to

:45:10. > :45:15.have the energy to mount a sustained assault in his familiar front foot

:45:16. > :45:21.posture. That's the only way he will have success here, Nikitin, to go

:45:22. > :45:26.forward and push Conlan back. Conlan is boxing better on the back foot.

:45:27. > :45:31.He's hitting and moving and hitting his opponent and not getting hit

:45:32. > :45:35.himself, Conlan, his style. It wasn't rewarded in the first round.

:45:36. > :45:40.He had a brilliant first round, for me. He has to produce the quality

:45:41. > :45:45.shots now. A big left hook from Nikitin from the man in blue. Conlan

:45:46. > :45:50.perhaps mindful of that steps back and he is beginning to drive his men

:45:51. > :45:58.back. I think he caught Nikitin downstairs. Nikitin step back. Look

:45:59. > :46:02.at the manner in which Nikitin's rhythm is being disrupted, some

:46:03. > :46:05.shots blocked by gloves and forearms but bustling away. Michael Conlan

:46:06. > :46:08.fighting like a man possessed in pursuit of a blaze in the limping

:46:09. > :46:16.medal stages for the second successive Games.

:46:17. > :46:23.Skills go out the window committed just about who wants it now. Conlan

:46:24. > :46:27.trading, Nikitin has the odd shots here and there. Single shot from the

:46:28. > :46:35.Russian but from Conlan and his bursts going in. Nikitin's face is

:46:36. > :46:39.injured almost beyond recognition. But still he comes forward. He is

:46:40. > :46:42.also desperate to make it the red -- medal stages of the Olympic

:46:43. > :46:49.tournament. His energy bank appears to be running rapidly out of gas.

:46:50. > :46:52.Michael Conlan, clear eyed, working with alacrity, picking punches

:46:53. > :46:55.Nikitin comes forward but is running onto punches that disrupt his

:46:56. > :46:59.momentum inside the final 30 seconds, a burst of punches to the

:47:00. > :47:07.body from Conlan, who can produce the quality that will resonate and

:47:08. > :47:11.impress the judges. Nice live of the defeat, Conlan changing the angle,

:47:12. > :47:16.Nikitin keeping the hands but common is the target, a lovely fake with

:47:17. > :47:26.the feet, so still showing a bit of class. Inside the final ten seconds

:47:27. > :47:29.and both men letting their hands as they try to impress the judges in a

:47:30. > :47:35.contest that was reduced to a three-minute shoot out, courtesy of

:47:36. > :47:38.some scoring but I simply did not understand at the conclusion of the

:47:39. > :47:43.first round. Conlan responded brilliantly, changed his tactics and

:47:44. > :47:47.forced the man backwards and engaged and accommodated him in his kind of

:47:48. > :47:50.contest in round number two and took the second round across the board,

:47:51. > :47:54.how will the judges scored his third and final round of this contest that

:47:55. > :48:00.was on a knife edge after two three-minute rounds? Nikitin keeps

:48:01. > :48:07.coming forward Robert Conlan is scoring with a better shots again.

:48:08. > :48:11.-- but Conlan. You hurt everyone's reaction showed Conlan has won the

:48:12. > :48:16.contest, he's actually one of last round the third-round scores are the

:48:17. > :48:26.big problem here and Conlan deserves to win the bout.

:48:27. > :48:31.It is now a nervous moment for both boxers, who will go through to the

:48:32. > :48:53.medal podium? The winner by unanimous decision, in the blue

:48:54. > :49:01.corner. Vladimir Nikitin. Oh dear. Michael Conlan's Olympic dream has

:49:02. > :49:07.been extinguished at the quarterfinals stage of the men's 56

:49:08. > :49:11.kilograms bantamweight tournament. He has declared an -- unanimous

:49:12. > :49:16.loser against Vladimir Nikitin, the tournament number eight seed and

:49:17. > :49:21.World Championship silver medallist in 2013, who was given the first

:49:22. > :49:23.round unanimously and given the third round unanimously after

:49:24. > :49:28.Michael Connor produced a brilliant boxing display, full of intelligence

:49:29. > :49:31.and courage, changing his tactics and Vladimir Nikitin is through to

:49:32. > :49:38.the semifinals at the medal stages. Michael Conlan, the number one seed

:49:39. > :49:41.and reigning World Championship gold medallist, reigning European

:49:42. > :49:44.Championship and Commonwealth champion, eliminated, leaving the

:49:45. > :49:48.Rio 2016 with no tapping chip hardware and some judging that

:49:49. > :49:56.leaves me scratching my head. -- championship. Let's have a chat with

:49:57. > :50:01.Ritchie. When you watch a contest like that you are both will do it

:50:02. > :50:08.and you wonder what agenda essentially there might be somewhere

:50:09. > :50:13.on the site? I'm speechless. I think at the end of the first round of

:50:14. > :50:17.Michael Conlan had a perfect round, it was a great exhibition of heating

:50:18. > :50:22.and moving and not getting hit. Nikitin is a strong, always on the

:50:23. > :50:27.front foot -- front foot but heck there he was at box. The scores at

:50:28. > :50:32.the end of the first round but they spelt out what was to come. In the

:50:33. > :50:35.last round he really dug in deep, Conlan, and a similar display to the

:50:36. > :50:40.first round but it was a dominant round for me, it is not close. I'm

:50:41. > :50:46.really surprised. The heartbreaking thing is for the Irish camp and for

:50:47. > :50:49.Olympic boxing, you will lose that kids now. He will turn professional

:50:50. > :50:53.because he will say, look, you robbed me of a potential gold medal

:50:54. > :50:58.I could have gone on to or at least a bronze or silver, but we will lose

:50:59. > :51:06.that led to the professional game and that is a crying shame because

:51:07. > :51:11.Conlan deserved to win that contest. You can see he's speaking to our

:51:12. > :51:15.colleagues just now and you can see by the intensity years speaking with

:51:16. > :51:23.and the fire raging in his eyes how he feels he has been rocked. I don't

:51:24. > :51:26.blame him either, he is the current world champion Kamano said before

:51:27. > :51:30.tournament started in this division he is probably the favourite and

:51:31. > :51:34.don't get me wrong, Nikitin is a good kid from Russia, strong and

:51:35. > :51:41.keep coming forward, but limited. He has put in a real fight, it takes to

:51:42. > :51:45.Max McCardle fighter, but for me he has been outboxed. Occasionally,

:51:46. > :51:48.decides to stand on trade but even showed he could do that on the

:51:49. > :51:51.inside and push the opponent back and has showed the judges he can

:51:52. > :51:55.work on the outside, what more do you want from a performance? He has

:51:56. > :51:59.literally showed it can box on the outside and they can miss and hit

:52:00. > :52:05.the target and can box on the inside and pushed him back. I think he did

:52:06. > :52:08.it all. I bet he is heartbroken and I don't blame them, we will lose

:52:09. > :52:15.into the professional game. Heartbreaking and furious, it is a

:52:16. > :52:21.combination. It is rage and anger and a sense of injustice. Not only

:52:22. > :52:26.that, I don't think... That we stop you. I can just imagine what

:52:27. > :52:31.emotions you are going through just now, how angry I do? I am

:52:32. > :52:37.unbelievably angry. I came here for a gold medal as I feel I've been

:52:38. > :52:41.cheated of that. I wanted to be a two-time Olympic medallist and

:52:42. > :52:50.Olympic champion and today my dream has been shattered, it is rocked the

:52:51. > :52:55.robbed. They are probably one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

:52:56. > :52:59.People have to know they are corrupt. We can understand how

:53:00. > :53:02.distraught you are. The first round did you get information you have

:53:03. > :53:08.lost it on the scorecard? Yes, when I went for the round but in the

:53:09. > :53:11.first round I was like, this is the easy, I was comfortable and I wasn't

:53:12. > :53:18.even out of breath, can win it easily, what is going on? And had to

:53:19. > :53:21.go to war, but it is, I outfought him and pulled back the second round

:53:22. > :53:28.and then I thought the last I had beat him to. It is what it is. I've

:53:29. > :53:33.been robbed of my Olympic dream. I've been robbed by a bunch of

:53:34. > :53:38.cheaters, so it doesn't matter. I must let you go. Thank you for

:53:39. > :53:41.speaking to us. Some strong words but you can imagine how emotions are

:53:42. > :53:46.running high, that is the end of the Irish dream in this Olympic Games in

:53:47. > :53:51.Rio as well as in the boxing ring and they came with such high hopes,

:53:52. > :53:54.not just with Michael but with Katie Taylor and so many others and you

:53:55. > :53:59.heard Stephen Watson before that fight seeing how important it was

:54:00. > :54:03.from the Irish team's point of view that fight went the right way and it

:54:04. > :54:06.went the wrong way, the two most controversial incidents at the

:54:07. > :54:12.boxing rings and far have concerned Russian fighters winning contests

:54:13. > :54:16.with very few people present thinking they did. Let's go back to

:54:17. > :54:21.fight that took place earlier today London champion Nicola Adams, making

:54:22. > :54:29.her first appearance here and we can see what happened in the first bout

:54:30. > :54:35.a couple of hours of. -- of hours ago.

:54:36. > :54:41.I'm the kind of person if you tell me I can't you had better believe I

:54:42. > :54:46.will. For me, it is never mattered that I'm a girl during a male

:54:47. > :54:51.dominated sport. Women's boxing, great addition to the games. Rules

:54:52. > :54:57.are meant to be broken. I've been through hard times, struggles. It

:54:58. > :55:01.isn't how you go down, it's how you get back up. The doubts are there,

:55:02. > :55:05.it's how you deal with that matters. Nicola Adams is the Olympic

:55:06. > :55:12.champion. Being the first and making history meant everything to me.

:55:13. > :55:17.Nicola Adams has just made history. On top of the podium with a

:55:18. > :55:23.gold-medal it was a dream come true. I like the fact that opponents are

:55:24. > :55:27.all coming for me. Nicola Adams, world champion. They want to be the

:55:28. > :55:31.next champion, that motivates me. They don't say she is good for girl,

:55:32. > :55:40.they say she has a good boxer, that is all I ever wanted.

:55:41. > :55:46.Round one. We are under way. This 51 kilograms flyweight quarterfinal

:55:47. > :55:50.being contested between boxers from Great Britain and Ukraine over the

:55:51. > :55:56.boxer in red with a little bit long with the first right hand it Nicola

:55:57. > :55:58.Adams, the winning Olympic champion and world champion, tournament

:55:59. > :56:02.number one seed and number one ranked boxer in the world making her

:56:03. > :56:08.first appearance at Rio 2016 after a very long wait. This is the 21st

:56:09. > :56:15.session of boxing, Day 11 of the Olympic tournament and this is

:56:16. > :56:20.outnumbered two to one. -- 221. The boxing blue is determined competitor

:56:21. > :56:24.who want come over on the front foot from Ukraine, ranked 34 in the

:56:25. > :56:29.world, 28 years old and she had an impressive high for victory over

:56:30. > :56:32.Stanier Petrov of Bulgaria in her first Premier round belt, limiting

:56:33. > :56:37.the world champion and 54 kilograms from 2014 championships. It is

:56:38. > :56:42.important Adams works on her jab early on and establishes the punch,

:56:43. > :56:47.could this opponent, she is very strong on the front foot, Kob, but

:56:48. > :56:50.comes forward in straight lines and Adams is using the jab and staying

:56:51. > :56:55.on the outside. Important she does not concede too much ground, since

:56:56. > :56:59.died -- sidesteps as the opponent comes forward but she has to start

:57:00. > :57:05.quickly, the jab is the main point keep her opponent at bay.

:57:06. > :57:13.Boxing can best -- contested over for mac -- four two-minute rounds.

:57:14. > :57:22.Reprimanded for not stepping back fully when the referee called break.

:57:23. > :57:37.A rather untidy affair at close range. The boxers finding themselves

:57:38. > :57:47.in a clinch. Nicola Adams looking to counter the seconds of right-hand

:57:48. > :57:50.bike Kob. Nicola Adams finding a rhythm and timing in the opening

:57:51. > :57:58.round in her first appearance at Rio 2016. You have to get your jab

:57:59. > :58:06.working. One and two. Don't go in with your backhand. Jab is the key.

:58:07. > :58:12.OK? The cult of the year in 2012 saying don't fall in with the

:58:13. > :58:18.backhand, your jab is key. Good coaching from Dave Alloway and Kerry

:58:19. > :58:22.Hale -- Gary a Leonard Korir is a very good GB coach as well. Please

:58:23. > :58:25.come and she has to establish the jab and she seemed to do it in that

:58:26. > :58:28.round, her timing will improve in the second round, she has the first

:58:29. > :58:31.round under her belt and has to settle down. You've got to boxer

:58:32. > :58:47.distance more, Adams. To the second round after the boxer

:58:48. > :58:49.wearing red, Nicola Adams, took the opening round for all three scoring

:58:50. > :58:56.judges using the ten point system and this, you get the impression

:58:57. > :59:00.this is the only way Kob can win the contest, getting onto the front foot

:59:01. > :59:04.and making it untidy and scrappy, Nicola Adams is this so many

:59:05. > :59:09.different abilities to boxing so many ways that she can dictate the

:59:10. > :59:14.type of contest we have by keeping it at her distant and range behind

:59:15. > :59:17.the long left jab. She is a world champion, Adams, she is good all

:59:18. > :59:22.round, can box well at range and on the inside at short range also. She

:59:23. > :59:28.also has a bit of power in her mid range work. She's starting to get

:59:29. > :59:33.behind the jab now, this opponent is coming forward, she is strong, the

:59:34. > :59:37.girl in blue, but she should walk onto the shots as long as Adams get

:59:38. > :59:43.the timing right. The jab is the key to control the space and distance

:59:44. > :59:46.between herself and Kob. Good lead right-hand edge of the orthodox

:59:47. > :59:54.stance from Nicola Adams. Head movement increasing from the boxer

:59:55. > :00:00.from Leeds. We saw her on our way to the boxing venue this morning and,

:00:01. > :00:06.as ever, she looked like she was going for a Sunday stroll. As

:00:07. > :00:11.relaxed as could be, all smiles and engaging in conversation as she went

:00:12. > :00:12.to the arena with Dave Alloway and Gary Hale and
