:00:11. > :00:18.Hello to those of you just joining us on BBC One on the 11th day of the

:00:19. > :00:24.Games. We are enjoying heats of the women's 5000 metres with the men's

:00:25. > :00:30.triple jump to come and Usain Bolt in the 200 metres heats. If you are

:00:31. > :00:32.watching on BBC Two, you know the drill, relate at the ready and

:00:33. > :00:52.turnover now, please. -- remote. COMMENTATOR: Laura Whittle across

:00:53. > :00:58.the line. 15.31, her time, or thereabouts. Apologies for the need

:00:59. > :01:02.to switch channels there, but needs must just as they came across the

:01:03. > :01:12.line. It really went according to form. Mercy Cherono and Obiri

:01:13. > :01:27.crossed the line with Yasemin Can and Shelby Houlihan. Madelyn Heiner

:01:28. > :01:35.hills has a reasonable chance of advancing as a fastest loser. We are

:01:36. > :01:40.just looking to see which position Laura Whittle finished in. We think

:01:41. > :01:45.she was tenth. There is another heat to come and they know exactly what

:01:46. > :01:51.they are aiming for. Shelby Houlihan ran really, really well and really

:01:52. > :01:55.moved over the last kilometre and put herself in a very strong

:01:56. > :02:04.position looking forward to the final. There is Laura Whittle. She

:02:05. > :02:12.is about ten and about 15.30. That was a decent performance from Laura

:02:13. > :02:15.Whittle. Guess, I think it was. We have not got confirmation of your

:02:16. > :02:21.time, conditions are not easy out there, how did you find it? It was

:02:22. > :02:25.tough, especially towards the end. It was my first Olympics so I was

:02:26. > :02:29.determined to make the most of the opportunity. I made sure when I was

:02:30. > :02:36.finding it tough, to make sure this is the Olympics, enjoy it while you

:02:37. > :02:40.can. I did think I have done enough to qualify as fastest loser. I have

:02:41. > :02:44.wanted to be at the Olympics for so many years so it is so nice to

:02:45. > :02:49.experience it on the track. I really enjoyed it despite not running fast

:02:50. > :02:54.enough to make it to the final. Were there any nerves at the start or was

:02:55. > :02:58.more like eager anticipation? I felt a bit nervous walking out and then I

:02:59. > :03:04.saw my family at the start. They waved to me which relaxed me. Then

:03:05. > :03:06.you try and think it is a normal race but the atmosphere is so good.

:03:07. > :03:11.That definitely helped me when I was finding it tough at the end. I

:03:12. > :03:19.definitely enjoyed it. Thank you for talking to us, Laura, or the best.

:03:20. > :03:27.Thank you. So Laura Whittle, her time, 15 point

:03:28. > :03:31.30 and tenth position. She has a slim outside chance of going through

:03:32. > :03:34.as one of the fastest losers but she has done all she can and she will

:03:35. > :03:45.sit and wait and watch the next heat.

:03:46. > :03:55.We have men's triple jump. Christian Taylor there. He is well wrapped up.

:03:56. > :03:59.It is very warm in the stadium, touching on 30 degrees. Christian

:04:00. > :04:05.Taylor, the Olympic champion looking to add another title, about to get

:04:06. > :04:11.underway. A huge favourite. Possibly his team-mate Will Claye will lay

:04:12. > :04:19.down the challenge. No Brits involved. Possibly another world

:04:20. > :04:20.record. That may be too early to speak of but Christian Taylor

:04:21. > :04:31.looking good. And the apps salute outstanding

:04:32. > :04:37.favourite in this final. No Teddy Tam go. They are aiming for Jonathan

:04:38. > :04:46.Edwards' record which has eluded them. Will Claye has jumped 17.65

:04:47. > :04:52.this season. You never know. We have seen some fantastic field finals,

:04:53. > :04:54.Denise? We saw the favourite goes second yesterday. I cannot imagine

:04:55. > :05:02.that happening with Christian Taylor. That was a big

:05:03. > :05:09.disappointment. He is such a lovely guy. Not only is he really talented

:05:10. > :05:16.and likely to win this competition, just a great guy and really aiming

:05:17. > :05:20.for Jonathan's record. Nice guys do not always win but sometimes they

:05:21. > :05:25.do, Michael Johnson, you are sitting next to me as living proof! Paula

:05:26. > :05:30.has joined us in the studio. What about the next final? We have a

:05:31. > :05:39.louche McColgan going. She has been riddled with injuries -- Eilish

:05:40. > :05:54.McColgan. She is in a very happy place. Steph Twell. She fractured a

:05:55. > :06:05.foot. She made a decision to go to the 5000 metres. I think Eilish

:06:06. > :06:10.McColgan can take out her mum's record. She is in the best shape of

:06:11. > :06:14.her life, she is in a really good place. We saw Michael Rimmer her

:06:15. > :06:18.boyfriend was ill and almost not able to come out and run his

:06:19. > :06:28.800-metre semifinal. I hope she has managed to stay clear of all of the

:06:29. > :06:32.illnesses in the team camp. Hopefully with good runs, Steph

:06:33. > :06:36.Twell and Eilish McColgan can get themselves in the top five and

:06:37. > :06:38.qualify automatically. Steve Cram and Brendan Foster are your

:06:39. > :06:49.commentators. Steph Twell is another one here

:06:50. > :06:55.testament to medical support. She had an ankle injury. Such a

:06:56. > :07:02.sparkling junior career. She won medals in the Commonwealth Games and

:07:03. > :07:06.then moving up to the 5000 metres. A real testimony to their own

:07:07. > :07:11.fortitude, the two of them have stuck to their task so well when

:07:12. > :07:22.many would have perhaps given up on this dream to come to the Olympic

:07:23. > :07:29.Games. Eilish and Steph in great form. This is a tough one, really

:07:30. > :07:39.tough. Seven or eight world-class athletes. Some of them ran the

:07:40. > :07:44.10,000 metres. The Norwegian athlete is having a cracking year. Next to

:07:45. > :07:49.her, we have had a great athletics programme so far, that she kicked it

:07:50. > :07:54.off with a sensational world record, Almaz Ayana. The limpet champion at

:07:55. > :08:01.10,000 metres, now hoping to any later nicht Dibaba and win the

:08:02. > :08:11.double here. Who would bet against her -- Tirunesh Dibaba. Vivian

:08:12. > :08:17.Cheruiyot ran faster than the old world record. She will be a danger

:08:18. > :08:22.as will the other Ethiopian. Sub 31 minutes this year over 10,000

:08:23. > :08:36.metres. Well capable of a fast 5000 as well. Nicky Hamblin ran as well

:08:37. > :08:46.and there is Eilish ready to go. Steph, full of smiles as ever. These

:08:47. > :08:52.two for me deserve to get their chance at an Olympic final. It will

:08:53. > :08:56.be tough here and they have had years and years of fighting injury,

:08:57. > :09:01.fighting problems, getting themselves ready for this moment

:09:02. > :09:06.here. I hope this race goes well for them. I guess Laura Whittle will be

:09:07. > :09:10.watching on but with ten possible to go through here, you get the feeling

:09:11. > :09:14.somebody might push this on. Hopefully the information has been

:09:15. > :09:19.related to Steph Twell and Eilish McColgan. If they were able to run

:09:20. > :09:26.faster than 15.20, which both of them are able to do, they would be

:09:27. > :09:32.able to go through as first five and the first five fastest losers. The

:09:33. > :09:37.time of 1520 is a time they are capable of. They are both coming

:09:38. > :09:44.into this event in good form and both of these athletes deserve to be

:09:45. > :09:49.here. It has been a long journey for Steph Twell. She was getting ready

:09:50. > :09:55.to run in London. She had a terrible break when she broke her ankle in a

:09:56. > :10:00.cross-country race and her dream went out of the window. Eilish

:10:01. > :10:07.McColgan, her mother Liz was telling me she is having to restrain her

:10:08. > :10:12.training because of injuries. I think she will have a good career at

:10:13. > :10:16.5000 metres and beyond and I think today is a chance for Eilish

:10:17. > :10:20.McColgan and Steph Twell, two of the Scottish athletes. They have had a

:10:21. > :10:32.real were surgeons, the Scottish. They have. The triple jump final is

:10:33. > :10:40.underway. Steve Backley. One of the early contenders for medals is this

:10:41. > :10:46.man, Dong of China. He has shown he has got Championship temperament.

:10:47. > :10:52.Can he jump far and give Christian Taylor the American something to

:10:53. > :11:02.think about? That is long for Dong. That works. In his first round he

:11:03. > :11:11.has jumped what looks like over 17.50, surely? A beautiful jump for

:11:12. > :11:18.the Chinese athlete. It will be a new lifetime best if it is beyond

:11:19. > :11:24.17.38. That is his best from four years ago. His coach looks the

:11:25. > :11:35.lighted. He takes the lead with a new lifetime best. Christian Taylor

:11:36. > :11:43.yet to jump in this first round. STEVE CRAM: a great start in the

:11:44. > :11:49.triple jump final. Eilish having an issue there, trying

:11:50. > :11:58.to keep herself safe. Suzuki has got them going at a reasonable pace

:11:59. > :12:03.here. So the first lap was around 75 seconds. Steph Twell never to

:12:04. > :12:11.far-away. Then three macro not sure where she wants to be. Just happy to

:12:12. > :12:16.sit at the back at the moment. Wright, Christian Taylor, ready to

:12:17. > :12:21.go. So, the American champion from four

:12:22. > :12:31.years ago. He lived in the UK back then in Loughborough. He has just

:12:32. > :12:40.seen Dong jumped 17.58. That is the lead.

:12:41. > :12:51.Taylor is always at his best when he is pushed.

:12:52. > :13:07.It is enormous! Close to 18 metres. He is such a supreme athlete. As

:13:08. > :13:14.soon as Dong had that jump in the first round, it was all eyes back to

:13:15. > :13:23.Taylor, because he can respond as he just has one more time.

:13:24. > :13:29.17.86, further than he jumped four years ago to take gold by five

:13:30. > :13:36.centimetres and Christian Taylor goes into the lead in the first

:13:37. > :13:41.round. We all look around to see where

:13:42. > :13:48.Jonathan Edwards is, I think he is working for radio, I am not sure he

:13:49. > :13:53.is even at the stadium. Three minutes seven for the first round,

:13:54. > :13:56.they need to be there. BRENDAN FOSTER: They are in the

:13:57. > :14:01.right area, and I think Steph Twell will be conscious of that. She is on

:14:02. > :14:07.the shoulder of the leader and she may be thinking it is time for an

:14:08. > :14:10.injection of pace. Eilish that old and running on the outside but

:14:11. > :14:17.running freely, comfortably. If you are looking at the field, you are

:14:18. > :14:29.looking up to distance runners. In the green and yellow, the world

:14:30. > :14:36.record holder from Ethiopian Almaz Ayana. But Steph Twell is poised to

:14:37. > :14:42.make the move, it would be a sensible move. Drifting into the

:14:43. > :14:47.lead, that is sensible, clever, with eight laps to go. Five to go

:14:48. > :14:51.through, the five fastest losers could easily come from this heat if

:14:52. > :14:54.they keep going at this pace. If they were really sensible, because

:14:55. > :15:00.they know each other from the circuit, they would share the pace

:15:01. > :15:06.and it would help them all. STEVE CRAM: Steph Twell realising

:15:07. > :15:15.that Suzuki had slowed down somewhat. Almaz Ayana, I don't know

:15:16. > :15:21.why she needs to do this, but she is probably thinking, out for a jog. To

:15:22. > :15:28.be honest, she could jog around and just wait until the last lap and do

:15:29. > :15:33.this, but anyway, 3:05 for the second kilometre, so they have got

:15:34. > :15:36.around in 6:12, which is a bit slower but that is because the

:15:37. > :15:42.Japanese athlete was well out on her own but nonetheless, the pack did

:15:43. > :15:48.pick up between three and 4.5 K. The pack does have do get moving. We are

:15:49. > :15:52.looking at athletic athletic phenomenon, Ayana. The greatest

:15:53. > :15:57.female distance race I have ever seen was the other night, when she

:15:58. > :16:01.broke the long-standing world record, 29 minutes and 17 seconds.

:16:02. > :16:07.What a performance and what a rude she is taking as we go back to the

:16:08. > :16:14.triple jump. It is Will Claye, looking to rouse support from the

:16:15. > :16:19.Brazilian crowd. US champion ahead of Christian Taylor, so we know he

:16:20. > :16:25.is capable of beating the big man. The 5,000m runners sweep behind them

:16:26. > :16:32.the back straight. Will Claye, round one.

:16:33. > :16:39.Another big jump! From another American. What a competition.

:16:40. > :16:49.Another field event starting with a bang. Clay missed out on long jump,

:16:50. > :16:54.despite coming third -- Will Claye. He is concentrating on this triple

:16:55. > :17:02.jump. Remember, he got a medal at both long and the triple four years

:17:03. > :17:06.ago, silver and bronze that time. Claye in amongst it here, a new

:17:07. > :17:12.lifetime best by one centimetre. Acknowledgement by Taylor. At the

:17:13. > :17:16.moment, it is America one, two. STEVE CRAM: That will be interesting

:17:17. > :17:20.if Will Claye pushes Christian Taylor, he always likes to respond

:17:21. > :17:25.to that sort of competition. Nobody responding at the moment to Ayana,

:17:26. > :17:30.she is away on her own, she has opened up nearly nine second lead.

:17:31. > :17:33.We have to be careful with the splits, we have do watch for the

:17:34. > :17:39.time of the pack. The pack are running slower at the moment than

:17:40. > :17:42.the first heat, so somebody here has to shake this up a little bit pretty

:17:43. > :17:47.soon. They look as though they have settled a little bit too much and

:17:48. > :17:52.Eilish McColgan has will run the whole race in that second lane. I

:17:53. > :17:56.thought Steph Twell would have a go early. When you think about it,

:17:57. > :18:01.there are four automatic places from that group, because the leader,

:18:02. > :18:08.Almaz Ayana, is miles away, just like she was in the 10,000m. Just

:18:09. > :18:10.like she showed the rest of the world what modern-day distance

:18:11. > :18:16.running can be. Her technique is perfect. There you can see the lead.

:18:17. > :18:23.She has got five laps to go and they are coming down the home straight

:18:24. > :18:27.with 50m to go. And another psychological blow, in third place

:18:28. > :18:34.there, Vivien Cherry ut, decided she is not going to get involved. We

:18:35. > :18:45.know how good she is, she showed it the other night. But she ran close

:18:46. > :18:50.to the world record, and that was a fine run in itself. In comparison,

:18:51. > :18:53.let's forget Ayana, the second group, there are only four places

:18:54. > :18:58.available, the second group have just gone through 9:20, which is

:18:59. > :19:04.five and a half seconds faster than the group that went through in the

:19:05. > :19:10.previous group. Then the group ran 2:58 for the next kilometre to carry

:19:11. > :19:16.up. They are not operating at 2:58 pace at the moment so I reckon when

:19:17. > :19:20.they get the two laps to go, they will be the same as the first heat.

:19:21. > :19:24.If anything, they are gathering, thinking Ayana has gone, no one

:19:25. > :19:29.wants to break this group up but even if somebody moved now, it would

:19:30. > :19:32.take them into a fastest loser position and certainly would give

:19:33. > :19:37.themselves a real opportunity. They have got to be thinking about that,

:19:38. > :19:43.working out how fast I need to go, what can I do, how many laps to go?

:19:44. > :19:50.Four laps to go for the chasing group. Ayana is almost 100m clear.

:19:51. > :19:58.There is the other Ethiopian athlete Senbere Teferi, trying to dictate.

:19:59. > :20:02.Eilish McColgan has got a good finish, banking on that a little

:20:03. > :20:07.bit, but she needs to be a little bit closer now. She has run a long

:20:08. > :20:11.way today. She has run the whole raceway outside into the second lane

:20:12. > :20:17.and beyond and when they look around, they will see Cheruiyot in

:20:18. > :20:21.there, so they will be discounting her, because despite being in

:20:22. > :20:27.fantastic shape and being a 10,000m runner, she is a medallist from the

:20:28. > :20:34.Olympic Games, and 5,000m, she has got a good to, so Eilish McColgan

:20:35. > :20:41.deciding to take it a little bit closer. And there is the leader. She

:20:42. > :20:45.is incredible. She has run a 72 but the previous lap was a 75. This one

:20:46. > :20:50.will be a little bit quicker but they are in danger of letting too

:20:51. > :20:54.much time slip by. They will pick up, undoubtedly, but so did the

:20:55. > :20:58.second heat and I think there will be some fastest losers from this.

:20:59. > :21:04.Ten of them could have got through, I don't think ten will now from

:21:05. > :21:12.this. Eilish, at the back, where she has been, there have been some shops

:21:13. > :21:15.and pushes. Belete in fourth place, then Steph Twell, then the

:21:16. > :21:28.diminutive Canadian, watch out for her, she can finish, Seccafien.

:21:29. > :21:38.Eilish McColgan sitting at the back. Grotta Dell is there.

:21:39. > :21:45.-- there we go again, Belete just getting another clip. They are too

:21:46. > :21:50.slow, too anxious, that is why this is happening. They have to run

:21:51. > :21:55.inside three minutes for the last 1000m to qualify because the lap

:21:56. > :21:57.time coming up for the leader, Ayana, just demonstrating to

:21:58. > :22:02.everyone here what a great distance runner she is, what an outstanding

:22:03. > :22:07.performer she is, in such great form. The heats of the 5,000m, I

:22:08. > :22:12.don't know why she is bothering to run 72 second laps but that is what

:22:13. > :22:17.she has decided to do, running herself into the final without a

:22:18. > :22:26.problem, without an effort. There she goes. There goes Ayana down the

:22:27. > :22:30.back straight, coming up, 600 metres to go for her and the rest of them,

:22:31. > :22:35.look how far behind they are. And they'll still only beginning to make

:22:36. > :22:40.a little bit of a move. Steph Twell is struggling for automatic

:22:41. > :22:44.qualification. Ayana going well and while we were on the triple jump, I

:22:45. > :22:49.hadn't realised, I am really sorry, but D'Agostino and Nikki Hamblin had

:22:50. > :22:53.a fall, I was wondering why they were so far back. They are up and

:22:54. > :23:02.running. We will have a quick look at that. D'Agostino just clips Nikki

:23:03. > :23:08.Hamblin, who smashes onto the track. They both go down. She hit her head

:23:09. > :23:14.quite badly. She is up and going round. D'Agostino got up, she

:23:15. > :23:19.doesn't know whether to check if she is OK, in fact, she does. That is

:23:20. > :23:25.good to see. I just wondered why, I was looking for the group and who

:23:26. > :23:29.was in it and the bell is taken in the race, but it will be interesting

:23:30. > :23:34.to see what happens, we have had people advanced in the steeplechase.

:23:35. > :23:41.Let's tidy it up at the front. Ayana is clear and away. If you are not in

:23:42. > :23:44.the top five here, and I can see down the back straight, Eilish

:23:45. > :23:49.McColgan is going well but not Steph Twell. I tell you what, Eilish

:23:50. > :23:54.McColgan getting closer to the group, working so hard down the back

:23:55. > :23:58.straight, determination on her face. She is desperately keen to get

:23:59. > :24:01.there. Steph Twell is working. They still have to keep going, there is

:24:02. > :24:07.an outside chance of McColgan getting through in that group as she

:24:08. > :24:10.starts to pass them in the home straight. Ayana comes home, the

:24:11. > :24:16.world-record holder on her way to the final of the 5,000m. Eilish

:24:17. > :24:27.McColgan is finishing very strongly and she is going to finish in the

:24:28. > :24:33.top five. Karoline Grovdal, Senbere Teferi. Steph Twell running hard to

:24:34. > :24:39.the line. It is going to be so close. 15:20 five. That might not be

:24:40. > :24:44.enough. How many were ahead of her? Two, three? I'm getting confused

:24:45. > :24:50.myself. It is going to be very tight for Steph Twell. It is going to come

:24:51. > :24:55.down to about half a second. We need her official time. She gave it her

:24:56. > :24:59.all on that last lap. They went close enough really but Eilish

:25:00. > :25:05.finished so quickly and with D'Agostino going down and Nikki

:25:06. > :25:09.Hamblin going down, it will be interesting to see what happens

:25:10. > :25:15.around that incident. But Eilish is through, we definitely know that.

:25:16. > :25:21.Now, the times are going to be very, very crucial for Steph Twell. There

:25:22. > :25:25.is Eilish finishing well. The Australians in the fastest losers

:25:26. > :25:31.spots. So Steph Twell has two people ahead of her and from heat one, we

:25:32. > :25:35.had three people finish inside 15:24, so if she is not inside that,

:25:36. > :25:42.I really fear for Steph Twell in terms of times. It is really close

:25:43. > :25:50.but that was a really exceptional last lap from a Eilish McColgan.

:25:51. > :25:56.Senbere Teferi qualifying, Cheruiyot qualifying. A Eilish McColgan really

:25:57. > :26:01.showed her speed and power but most of all, the McColgan determination.

:26:02. > :26:04.That was impressive. Ahead of Wellings. She is not sure yet but

:26:05. > :26:13.she has to be delighted, qualifying there. Keylor strikes out. Jonathan

:26:14. > :26:29.Edwards Walter macro world record, 18.20 nine. Taylor in the lead. --

:26:30. > :26:34.Jonathan Edwards' record is 18.29. He looks in fantastic shape. Will

:26:35. > :26:40.Claye, his countryman, in silver medal place in the early stages, as

:26:41. > :26:45.it was four years ago, giving Taylor something to think about. And that

:26:46. > :26:50.will have pushed him on, knowing that he will likely need to extend

:26:51. > :26:54.what he did in that first round. He is looking anxiously at this, he

:26:55. > :27:02.knows it is a big jump. Taking longer than usual to measure it.

:27:03. > :27:10.Maybe some uncertainty. Nothing up yet. 17.86, ten centimetres only

:27:11. > :27:14.ahead of his countryman play. Not as far as his first-round jump, but

:27:15. > :27:23.Taylor still in the lead. STEVE CRAM: Eilish McColgan gave

:27:24. > :27:28.everything on that last lap and she turns around, you know she is

:27:29. > :27:34.looking for her team-mate. Lacaze crossed the line as a fastest loser,

:27:35. > :27:38.Wellings crossed as a fastest loser. Sadly, Steph Twell, when you combine

:27:39. > :27:43.the two heats, will be the sixth fastest of losers by around one

:27:44. > :27:47.second or so and will not go through. So Eilish will go through

:27:48. > :27:50.and unless anything happens in terms of the athletes that fail, I don't

:27:51. > :27:52.think it will, it didn't affect anyone else, so sadly for Steph

:27:53. > :28:08.Twell, I don't think she is through. Eilish, Steph, come on in. I know it

:28:09. > :28:13.is a hard time because Steph has just found out she has not qualified

:28:14. > :28:17.and Eilish understandably consoling her. You gave it your all as you

:28:18. > :28:22.always do and we shouldn't forget the journey you have been on to

:28:23. > :28:24.become an Olympian again. I hope you won't be too hard on yourself.

:28:25. > :28:29.Taylor, because he can respond as he just has one more time.

:28:30. > :28:36.Training has been going amazing. I could not be happier with the

:28:37. > :28:41.training I did. It is a really hard one to stomach, especially after the

:28:42. > :28:51.Europeans. I worked hard but I got to tripped in the race which hurt my

:28:52. > :28:55.momentum. Thank you for talking to us, we appreciate it. Eilish, you

:28:56. > :28:59.were very kind to support her. You have gone through this journey

:29:00. > :29:03.together. You have accomplished what you needed to today? I have been

:29:04. > :29:08.there myself so I know how difficult it is. To be honest, even to get to

:29:09. > :29:13.the start line in as an achievement sometimes. I thought we were going

:29:14. > :29:19.to go down because there were a lot of people falling. I could see the

:29:20. > :29:23.girls and I thought I was going to catch them and then the American

:29:24. > :29:29.pulled a hamstring or something went wrong so I ended up having to jump

:29:30. > :29:35.out. Even at 200 to go I thought, it is over. I wanted it so badly. It is

:29:36. > :29:40.really difficult to describe. It has been so hard to get here so I am

:29:41. > :29:45.over the moon to get to the final. The aim was to get to the final.

:29:46. > :29:49.There is no pressure on me now. Making the final was beyond my

:29:50. > :30:02.expectations this year. I could not be happier. I can show you something

:30:03. > :30:08.you were referring to on the tee. -- on the video. There was a lot of

:30:09. > :30:15.bunching and barging. Steph got her momentum interrupted, that is what

:30:16. > :30:20.she was talking about. It is similar to the steeplechase when you have to

:30:21. > :30:26.stop and start all the time. I am so new to this race. It is different to

:30:27. > :30:31.other ones where you have a lot of room for yourself. Learning that

:30:32. > :30:39.today. If you are going to get cup at -- cut up. Even Mo Farah tripped.

:30:40. > :30:43.And he managed to get up and win. You just have to stay calm and pray

:30:44. > :30:48.your legs take you round in one piece. You did it, a really good

:30:49. > :30:53.accomplishment, we will see you in the final. Fire macro I can't wait.

:30:54. > :31:07.Really well done, Eilish. As a -- it is a shame that Steph

:31:08. > :31:16.Twell has missed out on a fastest loser spot. Eilish was referring to

:31:17. > :31:23.D'Agostino who almost tripped. Well done.

:31:24. > :31:30.We say it time and time again, to have heats in the middle distance,

:31:31. > :31:34.it is tough and you have to conserve the right amount of energy and make

:31:35. > :31:42.sure you qualify. It was a difficult race to get through. It was tough.

:31:43. > :31:46.It was hard to see Steph there. Maybe she could have taken it on a

:31:47. > :31:50.little bit and made sure she was in that 15, 20 bracket when she saw

:31:51. > :31:58.what was going on around her. She did do that a little bit. With two

:31:59. > :32:01.laps to go she was in a much better position than Eilish was. Then she

:32:02. > :32:06.thought I am closing on these girls. She came into the last lap and I bet

:32:07. > :32:14.you her last lap was not far off the last lap of IR

:32:15. > :32:26.a rather... With the problems she had with her foot she could not

:32:27. > :32:31.raise it off to comeback. She worked so hard to get back to this position

:32:32. > :32:35.but I think Eilish needs to believing and committing earlier in

:32:36. > :32:48.the race and then she could be right up will stop how good she be. How

:32:49. > :32:57.good could she be? We don't know. I would say from the training I have

:32:58. > :33:01.seen, 14.45 to 14.50. It does not mean she will run that in the final

:33:02. > :33:06.but she has the shape to do that. She has that Arsenal in their to be

:33:07. > :33:10.able to finish really fast and compete with these girls. She does

:33:11. > :33:15.not look like she is running fast but she is eating up that ground. At

:33:16. > :33:19.30 degrees in the infield and I'm thinking with the irony we had the

:33:20. > :33:24.rain last night which spoiled the start of the evening with the discus

:33:25. > :33:28.throwers, the pole vaulter and the hurdles and the technical sport

:33:29. > :33:31.which could do without the rain, these girls are running heats in

:33:32. > :33:37.such testing conditions, I bet they wish they could run in some rain. It

:33:38. > :33:41.is definitely cooler in the evening. The temperature drops. It seems they

:33:42. > :33:44.are not getting the best of the weather for the events they are

:33:45. > :33:49.trying to qualify in but that is the way it goes. They are used to it.

:33:50. > :33:53.They are used to having heats in this temperature. I am just being

:33:54. > :33:57.sympathetic. Well, trying to work out ways to get these girls through

:33:58. > :34:05.and hopefully in one piece. Let's have a look at the triple jump where

:34:06. > :34:08.Christian Taylor is leading the way at the moment. This is his best

:34:09. > :34:16.jump, Michael, so far. It has got off to a flying start. Absolutely.

:34:17. > :34:22.He is the defending Olympic champion. He has his eye on a world

:34:23. > :34:25.record. He mentioned the other day he is coming after Jonathan Edwards'

:34:26. > :34:32.world record. This is his first jump. He will surely make an

:34:33. > :34:37.adjustment throughout the competition. Obviously, he will want

:34:38. > :34:40.to win the gold medal first and defend his Championship, but someone

:34:41. > :34:45.will have to come and get him so he will have to be more aggressive and

:34:46. > :34:51.focus on trying to break that world record. Christian Taylor is such an

:34:52. > :34:58.amazing talent. He can sprint, he can jump, he is a long jumper,

:34:59. > :35:04.interestingly, he changed his lead foot from left to right from 2012 to

:35:05. > :35:08.2016, so I know he has been working with his coach and that will give

:35:09. > :35:13.him the opportunity to bring the world record. Based on the

:35:14. > :35:16.atmosphere here, it seems like a world record atmosphere here in the

:35:17. > :35:27.stadium and I'm sure he will be aware of it. He made a comment about

:35:28. > :35:38.Wade family Kirk's record. I think it was an injury. I have had to do

:35:39. > :35:42.that. It is asking somebody to start writing with their left hand. It is

:35:43. > :35:48.difficult because it is a rhythm thing. It is technique because

:35:49. > :35:53.having to land and sealed the nuances of the event. He has changed

:35:54. > :36:02.his training base from the UK to Holland. He has a great training

:36:03. > :36:07.facility and with his coach, solely for this purpose because we believe

:36:08. > :36:12.he can genuinely break Jonathan Edwards' record. Obviously, he is

:36:13. > :36:17.very quick over 400, he is multitalented, why would he not have

:36:18. > :36:23.had a little go at the capital on? He will probably tell you he cannot

:36:24. > :36:29.throw ultimately! He is quick but you have got to have the desire to

:36:30. > :36:35.do those type of things. That event is tough. It really is tough. We

:36:36. > :36:40.will see those athletes come out in a couple of days' time. He has been

:36:41. > :36:43.inspired by watching the likes of Jonathan Edwards, he knows his

:36:44. > :36:48.ability and he has got unfinished business. The other thing as well,

:36:49. > :36:54.the sort of speed he can display over 400 metres and 200 metres can

:36:55. > :36:58.transfer into the horizontal jumps. When you start talking that tackling

:36:59. > :37:02.things like throwing and the strength and power you need, upper

:37:03. > :37:05.body strength, pole vaulter is one thing which keeps a lot of people

:37:06. > :37:10.out of decathlon, if you cannot do that, in a matter how athletic you

:37:11. > :37:13.are with the sprints and jumps, the pole vaulter is a difficult one to

:37:14. > :37:19.master, mentally and physically. There is no way I would do it. It is

:37:20. > :37:24.almost like gymnastics when you see it. It is a very different skill.

:37:25. > :37:29.That is why traditionally we have always called the decathlete the

:37:30. > :37:35.greatest athlete in the world on the male side and the heptathlete the

:37:36. > :37:40.greatest athlete in the female side. Yes, the diversity of talent. Thank

:37:41. > :37:45.you for that. He has got a world record in his sights and you just

:37:46. > :37:49.feel it is only a matter of time. He is building towards that. Last

:37:50. > :37:55.night, Paula, we had a fantastic evening on the track, the 800

:37:56. > :38:02.metres. It was David Rudisha back in an Olympic Arena trying to retain

:38:03. > :38:09.his Olympic gold from London. As a race, it was just thrilling and

:38:10. > :38:14.gripping, wasn't it? We nearly had a world record through 200 metres in

:38:15. > :38:20.an 800 event. David Rudisha kept his cool, slowed things down and then

:38:21. > :38:26.just surged coming into the back straight. The rest of the field were

:38:27. > :38:32.reacting to him. He was controlling the race and running a different

:38:33. > :38:37.way. He had to adapt to the first 200. Going down the back straight

:38:38. > :38:51.was the French athlete who probably reacted the best but paid for losing

:38:52. > :39:01.out on a medal in the home straight. He could not compete with David

:39:02. > :39:15.Rudisha. He was working and he wanted it the most. You could see

:39:16. > :39:18.the desperation on the face of Boss. Let's get back outside because

:39:19. > :39:24.Christian Taylor is about to take another attempt.

:39:25. > :39:30.And it is his third jump, Gabby. He has produced two very special leaps

:39:31. > :39:40.already. He only has a lead of ten

:39:41. > :40:07.centimetres ahead of Will Claye. Looking very focused and determined.

:40:08. > :40:18.Self chat, all positive as Taylor strides out.

:40:19. > :40:25.He just forward rotated and got off balance and it was a foul as well.

:40:26. > :40:33.You do feel he needs someone to push him. There is always something in

:40:34. > :40:43.reserve. You get the sense there is something in reserve. It may need a

:40:44. > :40:50.bigger jump from Will Claye. A lead from the first round for Christian

:40:51. > :40:55.Taylor. This is the halfway stage, or we're just coming up to the

:40:56. > :41:09.halfway stage. The top eight athletes of the 12 starters.

:41:10. > :41:20.We see Doris of Guyana. He hit the ground hard. He didn't have the same

:41:21. > :41:26.poise and athleticism as we have seen from Taylor. He is below his

:41:27. > :41:50.very best today. He stays in sixth place but he will

:41:51. > :41:57.take part in the second half. STEVE CRAM: Therein the sun and

:41:58. > :42:02.partly in the shade, the 1500 metres start in the sunshine. The first of

:42:03. > :42:13.three heats. Chris O'Hare has a tough one here. Matty Centrowitz,

:42:14. > :42:22.the American super talent. A new world indoor champion.

:42:23. > :42:32.The best there is, certainly at the moment, Asbel Kiprop. The Olympic

:42:33. > :42:36.champion in 2008, the world favourite and the hot favourite to

:42:37. > :42:45.win the title. One thing that has helped Chris O'Hare here is one of

:42:46. > :42:52.the Ethiopian runners is not lining up so that is one less.

:42:53. > :43:00.Chris O'Hare has to finish in the top six. That might not sound like

:43:01. > :43:06.much, but in 1500 metre heats, even if you have got just 14 competitors,

:43:07. > :43:07.it is the first heat of three, the sixth fastest losers, therefore the

:43:08. > :43:20.other heats have an advantage. Reasonable place from the start,

:43:21. > :43:27.they will be happy with that -- reasonable pace. I think it is

:43:28. > :43:35.Kovalyov who is at the front, he is a very fast finisher, European

:43:36. > :43:40.silver from 2012, so he can finish quickly -- Carvalho. But it doesn't

:43:41. > :43:44.have the speed he had at the beginning, so he has decided to take

:43:45. > :43:50.the pace, which will help Chris O'Hare, because this race needs to

:43:51. > :43:55.get moving. Chris suffered with a knee injury in the last part of his

:43:56. > :44:01.training, came down and wasn't able to race well at the Anniversary

:44:02. > :44:02.Games, are so hopefully he will be able to turn that around, because

:44:03. > :44:12.the knee injury was impeding him. Just about 60 seconds, it is

:44:13. > :44:26.reasonable. Centrowitz tucked in behind there. Philibert-Thiboutot in

:44:27. > :44:33.third place. The crowd excited about the Brazilian, they would be excited

:44:34. > :44:39.if he got through. Souleiman and Kiprop, the big dangers, are right

:44:40. > :44:44.at the back, watching things. Ryan Gregson not in the best position, in

:44:45. > :44:48.the curve behind the main group. He will be a danger. Chris O'Hare

:44:49. > :44:54.always run smart funny and he knows on the third lap, I want to be in a

:44:55. > :45:00.good place -- always run smart for me. Chris generally makes the right

:45:01. > :45:05.decisions tactically. He came of age on the collegiate circuit in America

:45:06. > :45:08.and knows how how to race on tight tracks endorse and give himself

:45:09. > :45:12.every chance. Centrowitz looks really good. But he missed a lot of

:45:13. > :45:20.training earlier this year with injury. Chris just stuck an arm out

:45:21. > :45:23.and Souleiman almost sort of stopped in front of him. Souleiman went to

:45:24. > :45:29.the front but didn't want to go past Carvalho. Chris O'Hare in a good

:45:30. > :45:35.place. Ryan Gregson terribly boxed at the moment. They go past

:45:36. > :45:41.Carvalho. Chris O'Hare in the perfect place to strike. Kiprop

:45:42. > :45:46.comes storming on the outside. Kiprop woke up and put himself in

:45:47. > :45:51.contention. Chris O'Hare with a stumble, he tripped on the heels of

:45:52. > :45:56.Carvalho but he needs to follow Matt Centrowitz as he moves through. So

:45:57. > :46:02.at the front, the Moroccan just trying to push things on, he hasn't

:46:03. > :46:06.done that too well. Souleiman goes again, Centrowitz looks comfortable.

:46:07. > :46:16.The top six to go through. Bustos Spain with a chance. Ryan Mathews --

:46:17. > :46:22.Julian Matthews with a chance. Chris is good at finishing, but they will

:46:23. > :46:26.be going wide. Gregson with work to do. Souleiman, Kiprop, Centrowitz,

:46:27. > :46:35.Chris O'Hare, Bustos looking per room. Gregson on the outside. And

:46:36. > :46:41.they all away. Fouad Elkaam holds onto Pitt Place. Chris O'Hare just

:46:42. > :46:48.gives a little slap to Kiprop to say well done and that was textbook

:46:49. > :46:52.1500m running from Chris O'Hare. Didn't matter what happened on the

:46:53. > :46:56.first couple of laps, third lap, used it to get himself in a good

:46:57. > :47:01.position. One scary moment with Souleiman, he had to put his arm out

:47:02. > :47:06.to steady himself but that aside, very good from Chris O'Hare. I was

:47:07. > :47:12.worried about Chris in London when I saw him at the Anniversary Games,

:47:13. > :47:18.but he reacted really well. I don't know if this lap was for Kiprop was

:47:19. > :47:22.slowing him down in the home straight. The two at the front

:47:23. > :47:25.seemed to be holding them back and the others couldn't get through but

:47:26. > :47:32.Chris O'Hare managed to swing wide and get into a good position and he

:47:33. > :47:39.qualified comfortably. Let's just have a look at the scary moment.

:47:40. > :47:43.Kiprop has gone around the outside. That is his first stumble. That

:47:44. > :47:50.might have been from behind. He ran into the back of Souleiman as well

:47:51. > :47:55.with about 550 to go. But he didn't panic. He didn't at all, he had that

:47:56. > :48:01.nasty trip as he tried to move around Karbala Yeo, who was tying

:48:02. > :48:05.up. But he reacted, he held his nerve -- Carvalho. He found a way

:48:06. > :48:13.through on the inside and got out to the inside in the perfect position

:48:14. > :48:21.to run down the home straight and give himself the chance of

:48:22. > :48:27.qualifying. I have already passed on to Chris the comment by Steve Cram

:48:28. > :48:30.that it was a perfect race, textbook for qualification. You have trained

:48:31. > :48:36.on the collegiate circuit, so you know how to negotiate these rounds.

:48:37. > :48:40.Yes, it is just getting through. Every other race you do in the

:48:41. > :48:43.heats, it is getting through that with expending as little energy as

:48:44. > :48:48.possible. If you come here with that attitude, you will be last. It is

:48:49. > :48:56.all was going to be tough, but it was smoother than I thought. I got

:48:57. > :49:01.to about 300 to go and thought, only 300 left, I had kind of switched on,

:49:02. > :49:04.wasn't paying attention at times, paying attention to the laps, just

:49:05. > :49:10.keeping position, where I want to be and the finishing line didn't come

:49:11. > :49:15.soon enough. Preparation wise, you have had a bit of a knee problem but

:49:16. > :49:22.you seem to be over that now. Yes, I had about ten days off when I was in

:49:23. > :49:29.camp. I came down to London after no running and it didn't go well, but I

:49:30. > :49:36.went back to Boston, kind of rejuvenated, got to see the wife and

:49:37. > :49:39.just smashed the training. I had two weeks where I could just smash it

:49:40. > :49:43.and I was going hard every day and it has paid off. That is great to

:49:44. > :49:48.hear, we wish you well for the next run.

:49:49. > :49:55.Will Claye, silver-medallist from London 2012, big jump in that first

:49:56. > :50:10.round, 17.76. It is a big effort. But it is a

:50:11. > :50:16.foul. But Claye, another big foul, the previous effort was also very

:50:17. > :50:24.large. And Claye would desperately want to challenge that lead of his

:50:25. > :50:28.team-mate Taylor. It is an American one, two. Just three centimetres,

:50:29. > :50:33.and he knows how close that was to being something significant as we go

:50:34. > :50:38.into the fourth round. On the other side of the stadium,

:50:39. > :50:42.women's pole-vault qualification under way and Great Britain's Holly

:50:43. > :50:51.Bradshaw opted to pass at the first to heights. The bark is now 4.45,

:50:52. > :51:00.first attempt. Oh, yes. Good start -- the bar. She carries a season

:51:01. > :51:10.best of 4.65 coming into the competition, highly competitive in

:51:11. > :51:13.the pole-vault this summer. The world leader from Russia is not

:51:14. > :51:19.here, of course, but a good start from Bradshaw.

:51:20. > :51:24.And that continues and we continue with the first-round heats of the

:51:25. > :51:33.men's 1500m. This is number two and in this one, Charlie Grice goes for

:51:34. > :51:40.Great Britain. When you watched Chris O'Hare run, I think Grice is

:51:41. > :51:43.slightly more natural with speed, a fraction quicker, but O'Hare puts

:51:44. > :51:53.himself in great positions, he runs tactically so well, and Grice maybe

:51:54. > :52:00.not so good on that score. Manangoi there. Ingebrigsten, the younger of

:52:01. > :52:05.the brothers, but he is now the European champion, as his elder

:52:06. > :52:12.brother had been four years earlier and there is the Olympic champion,

:52:13. > :52:15.Makhloufi, who won in 2012, despite having pulled out of the heats today

:52:16. > :52:20.which meant he should have been disqualified but on appeal, he was

:52:21. > :52:28.allowed to run and put in an astonishing burst of speed in the

:52:29. > :52:34.800m for silver. Robby Andrews of the United States, second in the US

:52:35. > :52:40.trials, behind Matt Centrowitz. Grice with six to go through and six

:52:41. > :52:46.fastest losers and the sixth fastest loser so far is 3:45, so that is the

:52:47. > :52:51.page you are looking for. Charlie Grice should have enough here, a big

:52:52. > :52:55.should bearing in mind what can go on in 1500m racing, but he should

:52:56. > :53:00.have enough to go through as an automatic qualifier. Initially it

:53:01. > :53:05.was Makhloufi who went out to the front and then Manangoi was there

:53:06. > :53:11.and as it happens in the 1500m, they go out quickly to assert themselves

:53:12. > :53:13.and it settles down. Charlie Grice out in front.

:53:14. > :53:20.BRENDAN FOSTER: Charlie Grice has been waiting for this result, he is

:53:21. > :53:26.moving into world class. This is his chance to prove it. He spent a long

:53:27. > :53:31.window training with Mo Farah in Ethiopian. He has trained well, he

:53:32. > :53:36.has run well, he is ageing now, coming up to the right age as a

:53:37. > :53:39.distance runner. He is very, very impressive and I think they should

:53:40. > :53:45.be an opportunity for him to just show how good he is and how close to

:53:46. > :53:49.world class he has become. Sitting near the front, Makhloufi on the

:53:50. > :54:00.inside in third place, so at the moment it is Manangoi, then Grice

:54:01. > :54:10.and Makhloufi. Palamo turn on the inside is running for the refugee

:54:11. > :54:19.team -- Amotun. And the Spaniard Adel Mechaal behind Ingebrigsten.

:54:20. > :54:23.This is when it becomes a bit tricky and dangerous. Manangoi, when I saw

:54:24. > :54:29.him go to the front, I thought he might move the pace along. Now they

:54:30. > :54:33.are looking around, Hamish Carson on the outside, the Olympic champion

:54:34. > :54:37.taking the short route around on the inside. Nobody quite knows what they

:54:38. > :54:43.want to do here so it is getting slower. Abele mac al of Spain moving

:54:44. > :54:55.to the front alongside Manangoi, not very quick at the moment -- Adel

:54:56. > :55:03.Mechaal. Around the outside comes Amotun of the Olympic refugee team.

:55:04. > :55:08.Now we have a 700 metres race, they have been jogging. Charlie Grice has

:55:09. > :55:14.to have his wits about him, keep in the right position, as Makhloufi

:55:15. > :55:17.goes. Great run last night, second place in the 800m behind David

:55:18. > :55:22.Rudisha and Charlie Grice decided he wasn't going to give Makhloufi the

:55:23. > :55:26.chance, so he moves up onto his shoulder and now he has to think

:55:27. > :55:32.about his own race. Manangoi on the inside, the Olympic champion in the

:55:33. > :55:41.green vest. Charlie Grice next to him. They are moving quickly on the

:55:42. > :55:45.out side. There are six to go through, Gebremedhin of Egyptology

:55:46. > :55:50.outside. Charlie Grice is doing it right, giving himself an open track,

:55:51. > :55:54.just move out and put himself in the position. Too many there for

:55:55. > :55:59.comfort. Look at the frantic change of pace as they hit the last lap. So

:56:00. > :56:03.many still involved for the six automatic qualifying places. A

:56:04. > :56:08.little look from Charlie Grice to his left. It is Manangoi out in

:56:09. > :56:15.front and Makhloufi is getting in a bit of a boxing match alongside

:56:16. > :56:26.testify, the German. This will be furious over the last 100m. Manangoi

:56:27. > :56:30.from Grice. Makhloufi is there. Through comes the Canadian as well,

:56:31. > :56:41.Nathan Brannen. Charlie Grice has been clipped and he is out of it.

:56:42. > :56:45.Head in his hands. And it all happened, we said there is always

:56:46. > :56:48.the danger of that when so many are still involved, coming down the

:56:49. > :56:53.final 100. We will clear up exactly what happened, there was a bit of

:56:54. > :56:57.pushing and barging to get through and Ingebrigsten, who himself had

:56:58. > :57:04.been pushed, almost through an arm out. It might not be over yet in

:57:05. > :57:09.terms of there can be appeals but we will look and see and Charlie Grice

:57:10. > :57:14.was in a great position and then it all went wrong. There is Charlie

:57:15. > :57:19.Grice and there far too many, like I said earlier, and they are coming

:57:20. > :57:24.past him and at this point, he is of it. He is working hard. Nothing is

:57:25. > :57:29.happening. He gets a little bump but it was too late, there were too many

:57:30. > :57:35.ahead of him. There were too many at 200m. There is Charlie Grice, three

:57:36. > :57:39.athletes ahead of him and suddenly three with him. He is now in seventh

:57:40. > :57:44.or eighth place. He is out of it right now. He gets a bump ROM

:57:45. > :57:48.Ingebrigsten, and it was a bump. It might affect Ingebrigsten's

:57:49. > :57:53.qualifying but it won't affect Charlie Grice. He put himself in

:57:54. > :57:59.with the opportunity but he never actually gave himself a chance. And

:58:00. > :58:03.you can see that even though he was knocked, he was going backwards at

:58:04. > :58:10.that stage anyway. That is a very disappointed Charlie Grice. At that

:58:11. > :58:13.point, he is ready, in a good place. His top acceleration should have

:58:14. > :58:19.come into play, he should have gone after the leader but then they are

:58:20. > :58:24.coming past him and he is fading. Ingebrigsten behind him comes passed

:58:25. > :58:29.on the inside, gives Charlie Grice a bump, but he was slowing, he was

:58:30. > :58:34.tiring, Charlie Grice. The Olympic champion wasn't having any problems

:58:35. > :58:38.at all but that is so disappointing for Charlie Grice. Promised so much

:58:39. > :58:47.and in the end, he has delivered so little. Very sad to see that.

:58:48. > :58:53.And Charlie Grice should have had a quick enough pace. He is not through

:58:54. > :59:05.to the semifinals. Christian Taylor, round four of the

:59:06. > :59:22.triple jump final. He is the event leader. He is up for this.

:59:23. > :59:36.17.614 Will Claye. A slight deceleration there. Another big

:59:37. > :59:44.effort. He likes it. I hear he has 18.30 written on the inside of his

:59:45. > :59:59.shoe. Jonathan Edwards' world record is 18 .2 nine. Does his head go back

:00:00. > :00:01.here? It is a great series of jumps. He has got exactly the same as in

:00:02. > :00:12.the second round, 17.77. Christian Taylor, perhaps a champion

:00:13. > :00:22.in waiting again. We are about to find out who will be a champion of

:00:23. > :00:26.the coasts of paperback -- Copacabana Beach. Jack Burnell of

:00:27. > :00:32.Britain was in the thick of it until a few minutes ago. Andrew and

:00:33. > :00:34.Adrian, this looks like it is bubbling up, if you pardon the pun,

:00:35. > :00:49.very nicely now! Jarrod Poort was leading but they

:00:50. > :00:56.just reeled him in. It was like feeding time in the shark pool. The

:00:57. > :01:01.great news for Great Britain is Jack Burnell L is in the breakaway group

:01:02. > :01:09.of four. Another swimmer trying to get there. There is Oussama Mellouli

:01:10. > :01:14.the defending Olympic champion, the world champion from the USA in the

:01:15. > :01:24.white hat in the centre of those guys. There is the Dutchman, the

:01:25. > :01:28.European champion Weertman, and there is Jack Burnell L. He has swam

:01:29. > :01:40.really well so far and he is in the right place. They have been joined

:01:41. > :01:49.by five and six. You have got Ferry Weertman at the top of the picture.

:01:50. > :01:55.You have the American leading. He got fourth place in the pool, a very

:01:56. > :02:01.strong finish. Jack Burnell is in there and Oussama Mellouli. I think

:02:02. > :02:10.that might be Jarrod Poort struggling a little bit. They are

:02:11. > :02:23.showing the picture towards the back of the field. The battle is in the

:02:24. > :02:29.autumn, top of your shop now. Jack Burnell L is in great position. It

:02:30. > :02:39.has been the most amazing race to watch. We watch the Australian take

:02:40. > :02:46.the lead from the go. All the medals are up for grabs as well. Ferry

:02:47. > :02:53.Weertman is on the left-hand side. Oussama Mellouli I think has the

:02:54. > :02:58.black cap and on the right side now is Jack Burnell. The referee was

:02:59. > :03:04.blowing his whistle. Little bit of argy-bargy going on in the centre.

:03:05. > :03:11.Now they will be charging very hard. That was a sighting buoy, they can

:03:12. > :03:18.go either side of that. It will be a big charge, Adrian. We thought four

:03:19. > :03:21.had broken away but there are five and six coming in now. Jack Burnell

:03:22. > :03:24.trying to get over to the left. I think he is trying to get away from

:03:25. > :03:30.the kick. It would be good if he could get some clear water to hold

:03:31. > :03:36.onto. A pack of six now. Jack Burnell is in it. There are some

:03:37. > :03:39.very, very good swimmers in there. The world champion is in there, the

:03:40. > :03:44.silver-medallist and the defending Olympic champion is in there.

:03:45. > :03:56.Wilimovsky looked great in the pool only three days ago. Wilimovsky, he

:03:57. > :04:01.has one of those wind-up strengths. You can see the orange turning buoy

:04:02. > :04:14.and from there there is not far at all. Ferry Weertman leading. Jack

:04:15. > :04:20.Burnell is still in there, but he has got a wall of swimmers ahead of

:04:21. > :04:26.him. He needs to move out to give himself a decent chance of the

:04:27. > :04:31.sprint at the finish. But swimming pool swimmers may have an advantage

:04:32. > :04:37.because the water is relatively flat as it has been all the way through.

:04:38. > :04:44.It is not quite the Serpentine. There is a lot going on in the

:04:45. > :04:52.centre. Absolutely, this is a heavyweight battle. The three on the

:04:53. > :05:00.front are the heavyweight swimmers. A yellow card has been given to the

:05:01. > :05:10.Italian. He will be staying in, it is fine, it is like the football

:05:11. > :05:14.system. Jack Burnell has been on the back of Oussama Mellouli. He looks

:05:15. > :05:22.very comfortable. He was in a very nice position. The referee is going

:05:23. > :05:31.bananas. He is holding a yellow flag to someone. I think it is still the

:05:32. > :05:36.Italian. From this point there is 350 metres to go in this, the 10,000

:05:37. > :05:44.metres, the open water at the Olympic Games. 400 lengths of your

:05:45. > :05:50.local pool. Jarrod Poort of Australia went very early. He almost

:05:51. > :05:54.had a 130 metre lead and the field reeled him in. Jack Burnell is

:05:55. > :06:00.starting to go now. There is a line of six of them. Pernell, look on the

:06:01. > :06:07.left of your shot. He is looking very comfortable. They have been

:06:08. > :06:14.joined by a couple more. Flipping heck, look at this for a race! I

:06:15. > :06:21.love it! You could not wish for more than this. All the big guys are

:06:22. > :06:26.here. Wilimovsky, Jack Burnell is well placed here. In fact, he has

:06:27. > :06:32.gone into the lead. He has the Red Hat. You can see all the tourists on

:06:33. > :06:39.the beach. Jack Burnell is the lead guy with the Red Hat on and he has

:06:40. > :06:42.gone very early. Trying to go with him is Oussama Mellouli. Keri-Anne

:06:43. > :06:46.Payne said Jack Burnell would know exactly when he could flat line,

:06:47. > :06:51.that is when he can go for the end, give it a kick and go for the

:06:52. > :06:56.stretch and know he has enough to get to the end. Jack Burnell in the

:06:57. > :07:03.lead. One hour 50 minutes. What a fantastic sight to see coming at the

:07:04. > :07:06.end of the open water. Oussama Mellouli was with him. What do you

:07:07. > :07:10.do now? I would stay at the front and let them chase you. I think

:07:11. > :07:16.Wilimovsky, the guy with the white hat is there. They are squashing

:07:17. > :07:21.him. It is very tight indeed. Number nine has a yellow card. That is

:07:22. > :07:28.Oussama Mellouli. He has had to go out to his left-hand side. You can

:07:29. > :07:36.see the finishing final. You have to make sure Jack does not get caught.

:07:37. > :07:42.This will be a photo finish. They are all looking very strong.

:07:43. > :07:46.Wilimovsky with the white cap, Jack Burnell L Wright on him. They are

:07:47. > :07:57.almost breathing on each other's face. And the white cap at the

:07:58. > :08:01.bottom, I don't know who that is. There is a number on their backs, if

:08:02. > :08:06.you can tell the numbers, please give me a shout, because it is

:08:07. > :08:17.awfully difficult. There are eight swimmers who think they can win

:08:18. > :08:21.this. Eight across, the charge is on. It is almost like a horse race

:08:22. > :08:27.coming into the finish now. There are some swimmers on the right-hand

:08:28. > :08:34.side looking comfortable. Pernell in the centre. Is that the Greek?

:08:35. > :08:41.Gianniotis, born in Liverpool, he has made a break for the front. He

:08:42. > :08:47.missed out by five seconds in London. It was heartbreaking then.

:08:48. > :08:53.He is going for gold now. He got a bronze in the World Championships

:08:54. > :08:58.last year. Look at the stroke rate. He is a really good open water

:08:59. > :09:06.swimmer. He has definitely made a move. Has Jack Burnell L covered

:09:07. > :09:11.him? He is in a medal position. Gianniotis has really gone. At the

:09:12. > :09:15.age of 36, he is going to win his first swimming medal. Jack Burnell L

:09:16. > :09:24.still getting manhandled in the centre. It looks like Gianniotis is

:09:25. > :09:37.going to get it. He has got to touch the pads above his head. He does.

:09:38. > :09:47.Jack Burnell is in a photo finish. Looks like he may have a bronze. I

:09:48. > :09:56.think it may well be gold to Gianniotis. It may be silver for

:09:57. > :10:04.Ferry Weertman. Jack Burnell may have a bronze medal. If that is

:10:05. > :10:17.true, it will be fantastic. They will have a photo for the finish.

:10:18. > :10:25.Ferry Weertman the Dutch guy is in second place. They will have a photo

:10:26. > :10:34.finish of four swimmers. That photo you are seeing is maybe for tent

:10:35. > :10:37.downwards. Poor rolled Jack Burnell was getting massively manhandled by

:10:38. > :10:47.Oussama Mellouli. I think he got a yellow card will stop there is Nagy

:10:48. > :10:55.from Hungary. That is one of the best swims I have ever seen. I think

:10:56. > :11:01.we may have just seen Great Britain win a bronze medal in the 10,000

:11:02. > :11:09.metre open water. I would love to see a play. I do not know if they

:11:10. > :11:12.will show us a replay while they are waiting for a photo finish. They are

:11:13. > :11:18.saying there are eight people in the photo finish. I am not sure if that

:11:19. > :11:26.is for third place. We have a massive screen in front of us and

:11:27. > :11:39.yesterday, that went quickly. I think Weertman touches first. That

:11:40. > :11:48.is him touching first. Jack Burnell does not get third. I think he might

:11:49. > :11:59.have been fifth. I don't think Gianniotis has won it. Weertman has

:12:00. > :12:05.won it. Jack Burnell's hand missed it as well. Did he touch it with his

:12:06. > :12:10.other hand? I think the Dutch swimmers know he has won it. Now the

:12:11. > :12:17.school board has changed to say everyone is in a photo finish. --

:12:18. > :12:23.the scoreboard. I apologise for not knowing who has got it. It is very,

:12:24. > :12:33.very tight indeed. We will leave you with a tight photo finish.

:12:34. > :12:41.Wow! How dramatic was that? It was enthralling stuff and to miss out on

:12:42. > :12:46.a medal for a couple of hundredths of a second for Jack, a sterling

:12:47. > :12:51.effort. We will clear all of that up but we have to go straightaway to

:12:52. > :12:56.the boxing arena where Nicola Adams steps out for the first time. She

:12:57. > :12:59.got a bite to the quarterfinal and she is about to start her defence of

:13:00. > :13:18.the title she Thank you, you join us as Nicola and

:13:19. > :13:32.her opponent come face-to-face for this quarterfinal contest. And we

:13:33. > :13:36.are under way. 51 kilograms between boxers from Great Britain and

:13:37. > :13:40.Ukraine. In the red, Nicola Adams, the reigning Olympic champion, the

:13:41. > :13:43.reigning world champion, the tournament number one seed and

:13:44. > :13:51.number one ranked boxer in the world, her first appearance at 2016

:13:52. > :13:57.after a very long wait. It is day 11 of the Olympic tournament and this

:13:58. > :14:05.is bout number 221. The boxer in blue is a rugged, determined

:14:06. > :14:13.competitor, Pichai Arnett Cobb of Ukraine, -- Tatyana Kob. She had an

:14:14. > :14:16.impressive victory in her preliminary round bout, eliminating

:14:17. > :14:23.the world champion at 54 kilograms from the 2014 Championships. It is

:14:24. > :14:31.important that Adams works behind the jab. The opponent is very strong

:14:32. > :14:35.on the front foot and comes forward in straight lines. Adams using the

:14:36. > :14:40.jab and staying on the outside. It is important she doesn't concede too

:14:41. > :14:43.much ground, sidesteps here and there is the opponent comes forward.

:14:44. > :14:48.But she has to start quickly and it is the jab that is the main punch to

:14:49. > :15:04.keep the opponent away. Women's boxing contested over four two

:15:05. > :15:08.minute rounds. Kob reprimanded for not stepping back. Rather untidy at

:15:09. > :15:20.close range. Boxes finding themselves in a

:15:21. > :15:32.Nicola looking to counter that speculative right hand counted by

:15:33. > :15:40.Kob. Nicola Adams finding that rhythm and timing in this first

:15:41. > :15:49.appearance in Rio 2016. Get your jab working, twos and threes. Dave

:15:50. > :15:54.Alloway, coach of the year in 2012, saying don't fall in with that

:15:55. > :16:01.backhand. 10-9 across the board in favour of Adams. Also Gary Hale in

:16:02. > :16:05.that corner, a good GB coach. They are quite pleased. She has to

:16:06. > :16:10.establish the jab, like I said and she seemed to do it in that ran. Her

:16:11. > :16:15.timing will improve in this round. The first round is under her belt,

:16:16. > :16:16.she has to settle down. She has two box at distance a little bit more

:16:17. > :16:29.here, Adams. So into the second round after the

:16:30. > :16:39.boxer wearing red, Great Britain Nicola Adams -- Great Britain's Neil

:16:40. > :16:44.Adams took the first round 10-9. The only way Kob can win the contest is

:16:45. > :16:47.by getting onto the front foot and making it untidy and scrappy. Adams

:16:48. > :16:52.possesses so many tools and the ability to box in so many ways that

:16:53. > :16:58.she can try and dictate the contest they have by keeping it at her

:16:59. > :17:01.distance and range. She's a world champion Nicola Adams because she is

:17:02. > :17:07.a good all-rounder, she can box well at range, box on the inside at short

:17:08. > :17:13.range also. She also has the power and mid-range work. She is now

:17:14. > :17:16.starting to get behind that jab. Kob is coming forward, she is strong,

:17:17. > :17:20.the girl in blue, but she should walk onto the shops as long as

:17:21. > :17:24.Nicola Adams get the timing right. The jab is the key shot to control

:17:25. > :17:29.the space and distance between herself and Kob. Good lead right

:17:30. > :17:37.hand out of the orthodox stance from Adams. Workrate increasing from the

:17:38. > :17:43.boxer from lives. We saw her on our way to the boxing venue this morning

:17:44. > :17:47.and, as ever, she looked as though she was going for a Sunday stroll.

:17:48. > :17:53.As relaxed as could possibly be, all smiles, engaging in conversation

:17:54. > :17:58.with Dave Alloway and Gary Hale, and the physiotherapist as well. Good

:17:59. > :18:03.left hand from Kob, she wanted this kind of territory to make it a

:18:04. > :18:06.rough, physical encounter. It is important that Adams works on the

:18:07. > :18:11.inside, shows the judges she is prepared to work at close quarters.

:18:12. > :18:15.She needs to use the right uppercut, use the jab, and throw the right

:18:16. > :18:20.uppercut through the middle as the opponent comes forward. It was there

:18:21. > :18:22.to the body. She seems to be handling the pressure from Kob.

:18:23. > :18:36.BELL. Just a reminder that the judges are

:18:37. > :18:41.using the ten point system which isn't the computer system. That was

:18:42. > :18:44.in evidence in 2012 but now five judges are seated around the ring,

:18:45. > :18:50.three selected randomly by computer before the opening bell and those

:18:51. > :18:57.are the scores used to determine the outcome of each round. Good right

:18:58. > :19:00.hand from Adams. Kob has tried to -- got to try and draw her into a toe

:19:01. > :19:08.to toe battle. That is our only chance. One judge prefers that front

:19:09. > :19:15.foot pressure from Kob, so it is important that Nicola gets back

:19:16. > :19:27.behind that jab and works on the inside and compete there.

:19:28. > :19:33.Nicola Adams making a bright start to the third behind long, straight

:19:34. > :19:36.punches. That is a wonderful right-hand by the boxer in red. It

:19:37. > :19:50.is all square, for Judge B. Five times bodies with a World

:19:51. > :19:54.Championships, Kob. Very experienced, the reigning Ukrainian

:19:55. > :19:59.national champion. Competed in the European Games last year. On the end

:20:00. > :20:03.of straight shots as Adams increases the tempo. Better from Adams, she is

:20:04. > :20:08.holding her ground more and not being pushed back. We have often

:20:09. > :20:14.said, the judges prefer that front foot pressure. Certainly judge

:20:15. > :20:21.beaded in the last round. Nicola change tactics likely -- Judge B

:20:22. > :20:29.dead. She is hitting Kob with better shots, better quality punches. She

:20:30. > :20:34.has had her injury woes in the intervening Olympic cycle. It hasn't

:20:35. > :20:36.stopped her from prevailing on the biggest stages, coming in as

:20:37. > :20:45.European champion, Commonwealth Games champion, she won through to

:20:46. > :20:48.her same back of the second Olympic tournament to defend the title by

:20:49. > :20:52.winning the qualification event in Turkey and the subsequent World

:20:53. > :20:56.Championships, so her injury woes seem to be behind her. She seems

:20:57. > :21:00.well prepared to make a run to a second Olympic title. She is

:21:01. > :21:06.acquitting herself very well in this opening bout. Just got to improve

:21:07. > :21:11.her accuracy and timing a little bit better. Kob is coming forward and

:21:12. > :21:15.occasionally, Adams is missing the target. It is important as this

:21:16. > :21:21.opponent comes forward into punching range, Adams' long straight shots

:21:22. > :21:25.had to hit home. Kob having some success, so Adams has to rally. Nice

:21:26. > :21:32.left hook. A strong conclusion to around by

:21:33. > :21:41.Tetyana Kob as she started to find a home for her punches -- to the

:21:42. > :21:47.round. An exciting exchange. At the start of the round, Adams did some

:21:48. > :21:50.better work, straighter shots, she held her ground, she wouldn't be

:21:51. > :21:56.forced back, but towards the end of the round, Kob started to come back

:21:57. > :22:03.into it. The accuracy has just eluded Nicky Adams slightly. Judge a

:22:04. > :22:15.and Judge B went for Adams and judge C goes for Kob, so she is still in

:22:16. > :22:19.this. It is a 3-point margin of advantage in favour of Nicola Adams

:22:20. > :22:28.from Judge A. Into the fourth and final round and

:22:29. > :22:33.given the status of the scorecards coming into the contest, expect Kob:

:22:34. > :22:38.the reigning seven time national champion of Ukraine, to come like a

:22:39. > :22:45.freight train on a mission. World championship bronze-medallist way

:22:46. > :22:53.back in Barbados 2010. Good left jab again by Kob, in determined mood to

:22:54. > :22:56.find the finishing blow. She is strong, Kob, she has shown that in

:22:57. > :23:03.this tournament so far. On that front foot, she is a danger, but

:23:04. > :23:06.Adams is meeting her head on. I would like to see, after the jab,

:23:07. > :23:12.bring the right uppercut through the middle, it is probably the shop she

:23:13. > :23:19.needs as the opponent comes forward. Good a straight shot again from Kob.

:23:20. > :23:22.There will be no quitting in her ambition is to eliminate Adams and

:23:23. > :23:26.make it through to the medal podium. Bustling away with punches to the

:23:27. > :23:33.body while Adams looks to initiate a clinch. Just feeling the pace and

:23:34. > :23:38.little bit, Nicola Adams. She has had to wait so long, it has been a

:23:39. > :23:41.nervous wait for her to open her account and it does affect the

:23:42. > :23:45.boxer, you would think they would be fresh but sometimes when you have to

:23:46. > :23:51.wait ten or 11 days and train every day, it can take the edge off the

:23:52. > :23:57.opening contest. Kob having a fair amount of success in this fourth and

:23:58. > :24:02.final round. The fighter quality of Nicola Adams being brought to the

:24:03. > :24:07.fore. Kob unrelenting in her forward advance, trying to get to Adams to

:24:08. > :24:13.get the finishing combination. Adams is on the back foot, and this is the

:24:14. > :24:19.attempted right hand. Very strong conclusion to this contest by

:24:20. > :24:24.Tetyana Kob. But Nicola Adams takes another left-hander who will have

:24:25. > :24:28.her hand raised by virtue of the insurance she built up over the

:24:29. > :24:33.course of the first three rounds. Spirited attempts in that fourth and

:24:34. > :24:38.final round by Kob to overturn the deficit and find the finishing shot,

:24:39. > :24:41.but Nicola Adams, all of her experience brought to the fore as

:24:42. > :24:45.she negotiated the final round and she will be going through to the

:24:46. > :24:49.middle stages. But a spirited performance by Kob in pursuit of a

:24:50. > :24:54.place on the podium. Kob came strong in the last round, it was to be

:24:55. > :24:59.expected. Nicola had to really compete. Kob probably won the last

:25:00. > :25:03.round but as you say, Nicola Adams' better work in the first three

:25:04. > :25:06.rounds should get her over the line and she will perform much better in

:25:07. > :25:13.the second contest now she has brushed those cobwebs off.

:25:14. > :25:22.Ladies and gentlemen, the winner by unanimous decision...

:25:23. > :25:36.In the red corner putt Nicola Adams! . -- Nicky Adams. So Nicola Adams,

:25:37. > :25:40.the reigning Olympic champion, opens her account in Rio 2016 with a

:25:41. > :25:47.unanimous points victory over Crowtree of Ukraine, the former

:25:48. > :25:50.world championship bronze-medallist from 2010. As she shadow boxes for

:25:51. > :25:57.the crowd, she goes through to the middle stages, -- medal stages,

:25:58. > :26:02.emulating the accomplishment of the legendary Dick McTaggart, who won

:26:03. > :26:06.the Moore medals in a lightweight division in the Olympic Games, cold

:26:07. > :26:12.in Melbourne in 1956 and followed up in Rome in 1960 with a bronze --

:26:13. > :26:15.gold in Melbourne. Nicola Adams has emulated at least that but she once

:26:16. > :26:20.more, I return to the gold-medal bout and a return to the highest

:26:21. > :26:29.position on the medal podium. She is halfway there, through to the

:26:30. > :26:32.semifinals, guaranteed Olympic medal to hang from the neck of Nicola

:26:33. > :26:39.Adams but she has for more work to do to accomplish her ambition of

:26:40. > :26:43.retaining that Olympic title. Good performance from a Nicola Adams

:26:44. > :26:46.overall. Like I said, it would have been a nervous wait and apart from

:26:47. > :26:53.that last round, I thought she boxed pretty well, pretty comfortable and

:26:54. > :26:56.like I said, the first one is the all-important one, get it under your

:26:57. > :27:01.belt and of the nerve said the system and the second one, she will

:27:02. > :27:08.settle down and box much better. -- nerves out of the system. Nicola

:27:09. > :27:10.Adams, one of the brightest stars in the Olympic boxing firmament. She is

:27:11. > :27:15.speaking to the world's press as she makes their way through the mixed

:27:16. > :27:20.zone, she will make her way to the BBC position in a few minutes.

:27:21. > :27:29.That's head down to John inverdale as she prepares to speak to the

:27:30. > :27:32.victor in the quarterfinal, John. JOHN INVERDALE: She's talking to

:27:33. > :27:38.other members of the press at the moment but heading our way right

:27:39. > :27:42.now. We saw you on the way here and you looked ridiculously calm, were

:27:43. > :27:48.you? I was, I always like to stay relaxed. Get the headphones on and

:27:49. > :27:51.just listened as a music. In terms of getting the first fight out of

:27:52. > :27:58.the way, how much of a relief is that? It is a massive difference,

:27:59. > :28:01.you get the ring rust off, you get a feel for the ring and it was nice to

:28:02. > :28:05.get it out of the way and I have sealed a medal. Richie Woodhall was

:28:06. > :28:11.saying the one certainty after that issue will get better as the

:28:12. > :28:16.competition goes on. Definitely. I wasn't at my best but I shall

:28:17. > :28:20.improve as the days go on. One final question, it is the second choose

:28:21. > :28:22.there, you have been here a long time waiting and waiting, while

:28:23. > :28:27.everyone else has been performing and winning medals. How frustrating

:28:28. > :28:31.has that been? I have been so eager to get in the ring. I have been

:28:32. > :28:36.watching the lights go out boxing and Savannah go out boxing and I

:28:37. > :28:40.have wanted to get in the ring -- the lads. I have the first on either

:28:41. > :28:42.way and have sealed a medal and I would like to say thank you to

:28:43. > :28:47.everybody at home for all of your support. Keep on supporting. They

:28:48. > :28:49.will. Hazel, Nicola Adams Saivet through and has won a medal, but

:28:50. > :29:00.what colour will it be? The smile has returned to the face

:29:01. > :29:05.of Nicola Adams. It is never far-away. But not smiling is

:29:06. > :29:14.Scunthorpe Ozma Jack Burnell. That has been all kinds of confusion at

:29:15. > :29:18.the marathon swimming dot the Chinese and Frenchmen were given

:29:19. > :29:23.joint bronze initially but that time was also given to Jack Burnell

:29:24. > :29:27.Scunthorpe swimming in his first Olympics. We have now heard the

:29:28. > :29:35.Frenchman has been given bronze medal. The Chinese swimmer has been

:29:36. > :29:40.put in fourth place and Jack Burnell has been disqualified. Just as the

:29:41. > :29:44.women's contest was marked by controversy at the end, so too it

:29:45. > :29:50.would appear this meant's race has also ended in some controversy and I

:29:51. > :29:57.can tell you Jack is absolutely furious about it. He has been

:29:58. > :30:01.speaking to Matthew Pinsent. We have just seen you come off the water,

:30:02. > :30:05.give us your impression of what was going on out there? I am absolutely

:30:06. > :30:10.disgraced. This is the pinnacle of our sport, the pinnacle, the

:30:11. > :30:14.grandest stage of them all, everything perfect, all of this

:30:15. > :30:20.great scenery and stuff, and the one thing that ruins it is the referees.

:30:21. > :30:23.There are 600 boats out there, a ridiculous amount of boats which are

:30:24. > :30:28.not needed, and every single person does not know what they are doing.

:30:29. > :30:31.They are giving yellow cards out left, right and centre without

:30:32. > :30:36.knowing what they are doing and then disqualifying people at the end with

:30:37. > :30:39.people grabbing legs and everything. At the end I was apparently

:30:40. > :30:45.disqualified two metres from the finish. In the last running? The

:30:46. > :30:50.first yellow card I got was coming down the straight back here. I was

:30:51. > :30:54.second. I was behind the guy in front, there was nobody the side of

:30:55. > :30:59.me and the guide pulls out a yellow card. I could not physically have

:31:00. > :31:05.touched anybody either side of me and I get a yellow card. You explain

:31:06. > :31:15.that to me. The yellow card is supposed to be for an necessary

:31:16. > :31:18.contact. There was nobody around me. I shook my head at the guide and

:31:19. > :31:22.thought what you want me to do. These guys do not know what are

:31:23. > :31:28.doing. And the second one, did you know? Not a clue. It was right at

:31:29. > :31:35.the end. The best guys are on the water, you will all be very close. I

:31:36. > :31:38.felt a hand on the back of my leg which stopped me dead with two

:31:39. > :31:42.metres to go. I took a couple more strokes and the guy was still on my

:31:43. > :31:48.foot. Words cannot describe. I have put so much into this. Four years of

:31:49. > :31:52.brutal hard work and it is ruined by a couple of judges who just want to

:31:53. > :32:05.pull out a couple of cards. Any chance of an appeal or protest? I

:32:06. > :32:08.will put in an appeal but it is the same all over the place. The appeal

:32:09. > :32:10.will do nothing. They probably will not even look at the video replay.

:32:11. > :32:13.This is the grandest stage of them all and you get it ruined by a

:32:14. > :32:16.couple of judges. Unbelievable. Sorry. There is

:32:17. > :32:23.nothing you can say apart from sorry. He is absolutely distraught

:32:24. > :32:25.and angry. I am sure there will be further repercussions from the

:32:26. > :32:29.marathon swimming and if anything else transpires, we will bring it to

:32:30. > :32:40.you immediately. It appears the Dutch have won both golds in the men

:32:41. > :32:42.and women's marathon swimming but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth

:32:43. > :32:47.richly and metaphorically speaking for Jack. Now it is the women's

:32:48. > :32:49.sprint hurdles. We are in the heat stage of this one and I will hand

:32:50. > :33:19.you back to the stadium now. Cindy Ofili. Her older sister will

:33:20. > :33:25.go in the next heat. Tiffany Porter. We can look at the competition for

:33:26. > :33:38.Cindy Ofili. She will face stiff competition.

:33:39. > :34:09.Cleanly away. Ophelia now with Hildebrand. A good run from Pedersen

:34:10. > :34:24.of Norway. Good conditions for hurdling. As

:34:25. > :34:31.Cindy Ofili would have expected, moving clear there. The class in

:34:32. > :34:35.that line-up and safely through to tomorrow's semifinals. It was

:34:36. > :34:43.important that she showed some dominance. One little minor error in

:34:44. > :34:49.the women's high hurdles can knock them back completely. They don't

:34:50. > :34:58.want to make many mistakes whatsoever. Cindy was very good

:34:59. > :35:03.indeed. Compact, aggressive off each of the hurdles and that is what you

:35:04. > :35:07.want to see when you are waking your body up for this first round. I am

:35:08. > :35:20.pleased to see her through knife and fluidly.

:35:21. > :35:30.Will Claye in the final round of the triple jump.

:35:31. > :35:39.17.86 is in place for gold. It was a big effort. It is a long way out

:35:40. > :35:45.into the sand. Very difficult to tell if it is enough. His reaction

:35:46. > :35:50.is giving nothing away. Taylor will have to expect that will challenge

:35:51. > :35:56.the lead. Very close. Just ten centimetres separating the two

:35:57. > :36:04.Americans. It is all over in terms of medals. Will Claye settles for

:36:05. > :36:08.another silver medal, the fame he had four years ago, and Christian

:36:09. > :36:15.Taylor is Olympic champion. But what is in his mind? This, a moment,

:36:16. > :36:24.where he can in some ways begin to celebrate and relax and maybe, just

:36:25. > :36:28.maybe show us what he is truly capable of. Many believe he is

:36:29. > :36:49.capable of going past Jonathan Edwards' record.

:36:50. > :36:59.The Olympic champion goes in what is a demonstration jump but it is big.

:37:00. > :37:04.It is an enormous jump. But it is a foul. So no measurement. Interesting

:37:05. > :37:11.to see exactly how far that was because it was probably his best

:37:12. > :37:19.effort. But a foul in the last round. Taylor, a successful defence

:37:20. > :37:26.of his Olympic title and goes down as one of the greatest, if he wasn't

:37:27. > :37:37.already, one of the greatest. The world champion last year, the second

:37:38. > :37:48.best ever. And Will Claye. For the first time, a field event has gone

:37:49. > :37:54.to the script pretty much. His coach he has gone too between every jump.

:37:55. > :37:58.Christian Taylor surrounded by the world's media, celebrating another

:37:59. > :38:10.performance for the gold medal. We need to catch up with some news.

:38:11. > :38:17.This is what happened at the men's 1500 metres. Charlie Grice in the

:38:18. > :38:22.middle was not going to qualify. But the Norway champion pushed his way

:38:23. > :38:36.through. Charlie has been advanced and into

:38:37. > :38:44.-- the Norwegian has been disqualified. We have been told they

:38:45. > :38:49.have appealed the decision. At the moment, these are the other

:38:50. > :38:53.qualifiers through. There might be other people who will feel aggrieved

:38:54. > :39:04.that Charlie Grice has advanced instead of them.

:39:05. > :39:09.So on to heat four. Hopefully no dramas

:39:10. > :39:17.for Tiffany Porter. We have just seen her younger sister go through

:39:18. > :39:22.very comfortably indeed. She has the European champion and surprise

:39:23. > :39:29.silver-medallist from the European Championships last year. These

:39:30. > :39:34.hurdles are such a dramatic event at any time. Normally, Tiffany Porter

:39:35. > :40:02.manages to acquit herself very well. Porter gets away well. It will be

:40:03. > :40:40.tight. It may well be that Wilson hung on.

:40:41. > :40:46.I will get Colin to tidy it up. Roleder left it a bit late. What

:40:47. > :40:51.about Tiffany? We knew this would be competitive. As soon as we saw the

:40:52. > :40:56.start list we thought this will be a race. The women certainly battled

:40:57. > :41:00.their way through. Women's high hurdles, there is always somebody

:41:01. > :41:08.who can get it right and ease their way through. Very competitive. I

:41:09. > :41:14.think she got through as an automatic. She is in lane nine. She

:41:15. > :41:22.is very aggressive, usually blasts it out of the blocks. Usually saves

:41:23. > :41:34.the best to last. She will run a lot quicker over the first part of the

:41:35. > :41:42.race. She is very aggressive, not fearful at all. She throws the lead

:41:43. > :41:55.leg up. She goes into great sprinting is Bede. -- goes into

:41:56. > :41:59.great sprinting speed. You can see how quickly you get thrown onto

:42:00. > :42:03.these barriers, learn to control that well and then you can start

:42:04. > :42:06.really putting the pace on. A great run by Tiffany Porter and she is

:42:07. > :42:21.through. Here is the final result of the

:42:22. > :42:25.men's triple jump. It is all over. Christian Taylor, a new world

:42:26. > :42:31.leading mark for a gold medal, ahead of Will Claye. A silver medal for

:42:32. > :42:42.him. And also Dong, another lifetime best. A really high standard. On his

:42:43. > :42:43.way out of the stadium, Christian Taylor stopped and had a little chat

:42:44. > :43:50.with Phil. Just keep on fighting, the season

:43:51. > :43:54.isn't over, I will end it in Zurich and maybe something special will

:43:55. > :44:06.happen there. Gold medals will never be taken away, you have two

:44:07. > :44:30.Tiffany, well done, I suppose it is always nerve wracking negotiating

:44:31. > :44:36.that first bit, but you have done it in fine fashion. The first one is

:44:37. > :44:39.always the most nerve wracking but I'm glad to get through and make it

:44:40. > :44:43.to the semifinal. And tapping into the experience you have had in

:44:44. > :44:49.recent years, how do you bring that to there? I tend to put it together

:44:50. > :45:28.when it matters the most and I am hoping this

:45:29. > :45:53.No blistering pace setters. The Belarussian has been competing at

:45:54. > :45:56.the top level for a long time now. The 19-year-old Nigerian. There are

:45:57. > :46:34.a couple of 19-year-olds in this race.

:46:35. > :46:40.The penultimate heat in the first round of the women's 100-metre

:46:41. > :46:48.hurdles. The first three go through as of right.

:46:49. > :47:24.12.70 four, Cho Quinn. The US can leach at champion. -- Camacho-Quinn.

:47:25. > :47:30.Talay is shorter and more compact while Quinn is more fluid. She

:47:31. > :47:44.trains with the world record holder at this event. Quinn just takes her

:47:45. > :47:49.time. She glides over the barriers. She takes that nice victory. Both

:47:50. > :47:57.good runners. Let's have a look from this angle here. Talay snappy over

:47:58. > :48:02.the barriers. Quinn does not get drawn into her rhythm. She has that

:48:03. > :48:10.long, low pink stride. Makes it nice and fluid and eases her way through.

:48:11. > :48:15.Great running. It has been a long morning for the

:48:16. > :48:21.women's pole vaulters. There was so much drama in the men's version

:48:22. > :48:24.yesterday evening. Holly Bradshaw carrying a foul at this height. A

:48:25. > :48:43.second attempt. Better. 12 athletes with automatic

:48:44. > :48:47.qualification. It will be great to see Holly Bradshaw in that final.

:48:48. > :48:55.She is such a major championships competitor. It is difficult to tell

:48:56. > :49:03.across the two groups. 4.55 may even be enough. So Holly Bradshaw going

:49:04. > :49:10.well. We were treated to the mother of all

:49:11. > :49:22.pole pole vaulter competitions last night. Thiago Da Siilva took the top

:49:23. > :49:31.spot from Raymond Lavillenie. If the ladies can do something like that in

:49:32. > :49:36.their final it will do a heck of a chance for pole vaulting but also

:49:37. > :49:40.they have a medal chance. Fabiana Murer is well renowned throughout

:49:41. > :49:47.Brazil. That is what will bring the crowds out. That is what will drive

:49:48. > :49:53.the message about athletics and hopefully produce more athletes

:49:54. > :49:58.going forward. The people of Brazil feel these Olympics are for them.

:49:59. > :50:08.There was a feeling that they had been supplanted on a not organically

:50:09. > :50:12.involved but hopefully they will be involved. We saw Christian Taylor

:50:13. > :50:30.take gold. I think Will Claye knew he may come

:50:31. > :50:34.under some pressure. Once he put that big jump out there at the very

:50:35. > :50:39.beginning at his first attempt, I think that gave him the confidence

:50:40. > :50:48.and he was going for the world record after that. I think they gave

:50:49. > :50:53.him some real confidence. He has seen the atmosphere and knew he

:50:54. > :50:59.could really go for it. He will be very pleased with that gold medal

:51:00. > :51:04.and defending his Championship which is not so easy to do. Lots of people

:51:05. > :51:11.have been doing it lately but it is not easy historically. I think he

:51:12. > :51:18.was really confident that he would win but I was watching him through

:51:19. > :51:24.those rounds, those warm-ups, he was really chasing that world record and

:51:25. > :51:28.I think he got a little bit tight. Sometimes, these things happen

:51:29. > :51:31.organically. When Jonathan broke the world record, he was not thinking

:51:32. > :51:40.about it. He knew he was in the shape of his life. Christian had his

:51:41. > :51:46.eye set on that prize. He has won the Olympic title before and he was

:51:47. > :51:51.chasing it. There is also the whole thing of being pushed as well.

:51:52. > :51:58.Sometimes you need that in order to break a world record and I wonder if

:51:59. > :52:06.that element was missing. He had done it in practice. It is not an

:52:07. > :52:14.exhibition. There is something to be said for tight competition. We saw

:52:15. > :52:20.the final with Teddy Tamgo but we have missed him here in Rio. Let's

:52:21. > :52:22.get back on the track for the 100 metre hurdles. Rhianna Rollins is

:52:23. > :52:39.one of the big names. Some news to link the triple jumper

:52:40. > :52:50.medallist final, he has just proposed, an Twitter I have been

:52:51. > :53:01.told. Oh, dear! Maybe he proposed and then announced it on Twitter.

:53:02. > :53:03.Can Rollins join her two team-mates? The Americans have so much strength

:53:04. > :53:30.and depth. Moraes from Brazil just got a really

:53:31. > :53:56.big cheer, as you see. She is not happy. A little bit of

:53:57. > :54:05.noise up there, a lot of Brazil fans and last night in the pole-vault,

:54:06. > :54:11.they had plenty to shout about. Gold medal in the men's pole-vault. We

:54:12. > :54:19.have some news of the women's pole-vault.

:54:20. > :54:39.Steve will give us some news, we will stand by. We will see if we can

:54:40. > :54:44.get the crowd to stay quiet, the atmosphere is very good, they just

:54:45. > :54:56.need to be quiet at the start. Here we go, top three to go through.

:54:57. > :55:01.Warm, hardly a breath of wind down on the track, may be a slight little

:55:02. > :55:10.breath, probably coming from the crowd. Moraes might be hoping they

:55:11. > :55:16.can cheer her on to somehow get in the top three. She would have to go

:55:17. > :55:18.really well, a personal best this year of 12.91, that would be good

:55:19. > :55:28.enough if she ran it as a fastest loser. Rollins got away very, very

:55:29. > :55:35.quick indeed, almost looked like a false start. Megan Simons doing well

:55:36. > :55:42.for Jamaica. The Brazilians are cheering on Moraes. Easy win in the

:55:43. > :55:52.end for Rollins, Sandra Gomez came through for the third spot. Plenty

:55:53. > :55:55.of noise there -- Gomis. It was a cracking start, the reactions from

:55:56. > :56:01.Rollins. The world indoors, thought she was going to win that, she lost

:56:02. > :56:09.out to near Ali. Almost to the naked eye, I was waiting for a recall,

:56:10. > :56:13.that is really, really good. It is sharp out of the blocks and you can

:56:14. > :56:19.see she is the real class in this field. I was also watching Simmonds

:56:20. > :56:21.from Jamaica, she trains with Elaine Thomson and the Shelly-Ann

:56:22. > :56:26.Fraser-Pryce and there was a lot of talk that she is one to watch in the

:56:27. > :56:32.future, but definitely Rollins at the moment. Aggressive and sharp

:56:33. > :56:36.over all of these barriers. She runs off it so well and I guess she most

:56:37. > :56:41.probably is the one who is looking at breaking that world record.

:56:42. > :56:47.Everyone thought that was going to be hers but her team-mates snuck in

:56:48. > :56:52.front of her for the title. Potential Olympic champion. So the

:56:53. > :57:05.winning time... That time for Visser, I don't think

:57:06. > :57:10.it is going to be quick enough. It won't be, I don't think she is going

:57:11. > :57:14.to go through, you had to be just under 13 seconds. We will see if we

:57:15. > :57:21.can clarify that. Six fastest losers spots available... The two British

:57:22. > :57:28.athletes, Cindy Ofili and Tiffany Porter are safely through. All of

:57:29. > :57:34.the big names, the contenders, if you like. And then we are into the

:57:35. > :57:41.fastest loser sports and a fastest loser, or slowest of the fastest

:57:42. > :57:48.losers is 12.90 nine. Time for some news. Steve Backley? Some news and

:57:49. > :57:56.some drama because we were just talking about Fabi on Europe's

:57:57. > :58:04.chances, she saw her colleague take silver in the men's, Da Silva. --

:58:05. > :58:11.take gold. And she is out! Well, at 35 years of age, I was going to be

:58:12. > :58:14.waxing on about how experienced she is, and 200 million Brazilians

:58:15. > :58:23.willing her to go over that height, the scene of such success for

:58:24. > :58:29.Brazil. A matter of 12 hours ago, it was around midnight before we left

:58:30. > :58:34.last night and probably a better chance for Fabiana Murer, we

:58:35. > :58:41.thought. But three fouls and her Olympic dream is in tatters. So we

:58:42. > :58:45.may well have a brilliant women's pole-vault final tomorrow but it

:58:46. > :58:49.won't involve Fabiana Murer. How disappointing for everybody to see

:58:50. > :58:53.her go in that way. How disappointing for her, she really is

:58:54. > :58:57.a crowd favourite. But she did no height in London as well, which is a

:58:58. > :59:02.big, big deal, because when you have that amount of pressure on your

:59:03. > :59:07.shoulders, you need confidence from your performances previously, just

:59:08. > :59:13.to get into the competition and it has just gone horribly wrong for

:59:14. > :59:17.her. 2011, she won the world championship, there were big hopes

:59:18. > :59:20.for her in 2012 and from what I have heard from the Brazilian coaches,

:59:21. > :59:26.they have lost a lot of confidence that she would be able to get back

:59:27. > :59:28.and get this done because of 2012. Obviously having the Olympics in

:59:29. > :59:35.your home country, there is a certain motivation that that brings

:59:36. > :59:38.and seeing her countrymen, what he did last night in the pole-vault, Da

:59:39. > :59:43.Silva winning the gold, it will have given her more confidence but in

:59:44. > :59:46.some cases, the fact that you have a home Olympics, sometimes it is too

:59:47. > :59:51.much pressure and it may have gotten to her. Was it physical or mental

:59:52. > :59:56.they were more concerned with? Mental. There was no reason, from

:59:57. > :00:00.what I understood, no reason physically that she should not have

:00:01. > :00:04.qualified for the final in 2012, given that she had been world

:00:05. > :00:07.champion in 2011 and was carrying no injuries and they thought it was

:00:08. > :00:11.mental, so that can be one of the issues with her. We know the crowd

:00:12. > :00:15.here love Usain Bolt and they are going to have to put their

:00:16. > :00:24.disappointment to one side for a few minutes, because he is going to be

:00:25. > :00:27.back out on the track shortly, because the men's 200m heats are

:00:28. > :00:31.starting, all ten of them. Yes, ten. There are a lot of 200m runner, used

:00:32. > :00:35.to be one of them. I love watching the 200m, but ten heats is going to

:00:36. > :00:44.be a little bit tough to get through. But we will can get Danny

:00:45. > :00:51.Talbot is going into first, British interest in that, ready to get his

:00:52. > :00:56.Olympic Games under way. He has got a season's best of 20.37, do you

:00:57. > :01:01.think it will take more than that to get through the heats. From what we

:01:02. > :01:10.have seen in the early rounds, it has been mixed. The 400m yesterday,

:01:11. > :01:15.it was terrible, and then you look at the women's 400m, the standard

:01:16. > :01:21.was really high. The best thing for Danny Talbot to do is run it really

:01:22. > :01:27.safe, run it like a final, it is 200m, it won't take that too much

:01:28. > :01:31.out of you. The top to get through and the next four fastest to the

:01:32. > :01:35.semifinals tomorrow. DeSean merit going in the 200m as well and we saw

:01:36. > :01:45.him desperately disappointed when he got his medal for the 400m and he

:01:46. > :01:52.wasn't particularly happy with the consolation prize -- Lashawn

:01:53. > :01:56.Merritt. I think he will take it forward, but the 200m, he has the

:01:57. > :02:00.fastest time in the world but he knows he is not the fastest guy, so

:02:01. > :02:03.he will be happy with the medal and will be motivated that he is not the

:02:04. > :02:08.favourite and anything he gets in terms of a medal will be seen as

:02:09. > :02:12.amazing, he is a 400m runner, and Olympic medallist from 2008 and

:02:13. > :02:19.getting any medal here in the 200m will be great for his career. OK,

:02:20. > :02:25.thank you, and before we go on the track, let's see some discuss. Drama

:02:26. > :02:29.here, because Sandra Perkovic, on two fouls, the defending Olympic

:02:30. > :02:33.champion, from Croatia. Nearly fallen over but she likes it. The

:02:34. > :02:41.longest role of the competition so far, takes the lead. -- the longest

:02:42. > :02:44.throw. It was knife edge for the Croatian, unbeaten in 2016, it would

:02:45. > :02:49.have been one of the biggest upsets of the Games should she have gone

:02:50. > :02:54.out. She nearly fell out sideways. If she fell out of the circle, it

:02:55. > :03:04.would have been a foul. But that is close to 70 metres. The lead, 65.72

:03:05. > :03:11.in the first round. That is one massive effort for the Croatian to

:03:12. > :03:20.take the lead. 69.21, comfortably goes into the lead.

:03:21. > :03:29.Well, the crowd loved that. Her celebration, a real explosion of

:03:30. > :03:33.emotion from Perkovic, the relieved, I think, showing. She managed to

:03:34. > :03:39.produce that big throw and just hang onto it. So what can Danny Talbot do

:03:40. > :03:50.here. Bronze medal in Amsterdam at the European Championships held in

:03:51. > :03:57.July. And at 20.37, season's best, it will be tough. The four fastest

:03:58. > :04:05.losers, so if you are not in the top two and you are third, there are ten

:04:06. > :04:16.heats, so times will factor. He has Ogunode to think about, Alonso

:04:17. > :04:37.Edward, zirconia -- Zirconis agrees, even Pinder in lane one.

:04:38. > :05:05.The athlete from Lesotho carried their flag in the opening ceremony.

:05:06. > :05:17.Pinder in lane one fell out of his blocks. He knows it. That is a

:05:18. > :05:24.shame. He was in lane one anyway, he was probably thinking, I have got to

:05:25. > :05:29.get out here. That is silly, really. I say he fell, he fell after the

:05:30. > :05:36.first couple of strides, but he went way too early, Colin. Way too early.

:05:37. > :05:41.That makes the job of Danny Talbot a little bit easier because he could

:05:42. > :05:47.be one of those threats. At least he can concentrate on everything

:05:48. > :05:55.outside of him rather than who is on his inside.

:05:56. > :06:05.I would be interested in how Harvey goes, the Jamaican now running for

:06:06. > :06:18.Turkey. He ran the season best. The heats are drawn on season's bests.

:06:19. > :06:24.It has added an extra good athlete for Danny Talbot to content with.

:06:25. > :06:46.Alonzo Edward was the winner of the Monaco Diamond League, second in

:06:47. > :06:58.London. You know who is in the very last heat, heat ten, by the way.

:06:59. > :07:07.Safely away this time. Ogunode is going well. Danny Talbot is in this

:07:08. > :07:21.race. Danny Talbot gets it! Well done!

:07:22. > :07:27.That is fast. It could be close to his personal best. We said he would

:07:28. > :07:37.have to run at least a season's best. He has done that. 20.19, the

:07:38. > :07:43.winning time, Colin. A really strong last 54 May. He had to take this as

:07:44. > :07:54.a final. It was a class act around him. He nailed that bend. It was a

:07:55. > :08:03.nice, smooth bend. He is aligned with everybody else. Don't add any

:08:04. > :08:07.more to this. Don't stress, don't strain, don't cause any more tension

:08:08. > :08:21.and he is rewarded with a season's best. It is this bit of the race I

:08:22. > :08:30.thought was really good. Let's have a look at him here. Out of the

:08:31. > :08:35.blocks, really well focused. Michael, what are your thoughts?

:08:36. > :08:41.Great execution there. I agree with Steve, this is the best part of the

:08:42. > :08:45.race. It comes from training as opposed to execution for 200 metres.

:08:46. > :08:57.You want to get out of the blocks, run the bend really well. This point

:08:58. > :09:01.was most impressive. He demonstrated pretty good form head down the home

:09:02. > :09:05.stretch, knowing that he might come under a little bit of pressure. I

:09:06. > :09:10.didn't like the glance over to the right. Just keep running and doing

:09:11. > :09:14.what you are doing and get to that finish line because that could cost

:09:15. > :09:24.you a couple of hundredths of a second. That equalised his personal

:09:25. > :09:28.best. It's certainly bodes well for confidence. He should do well in the

:09:29. > :09:33.next round but it will get tougher. That is right, Michael, what a way

:09:34. > :09:39.to start, equalising your personal best. I am very happy with that. I

:09:40. > :09:46.have known for a while my PB is coming but forward ever reason it

:09:47. > :09:50.hasn't. In lane two I was in that for London in the Diamond League. I

:09:51. > :09:54.learned my lessons from that. Talking of London, you were not

:09:55. > :10:01.there for years ago when perhaps you should have been. Now you have your

:10:02. > :10:07.Olympic chance and arguably we you want to seize the moment. Everything

:10:08. > :10:13.happens for a reason and I missed out on the individual in London but

:10:14. > :10:19.I am here now and I am enjoying it. What about tomorrow? What will you

:10:20. > :10:23.do? Just do the same again. All I am trying to do is relax and enjoy

:10:24. > :10:29.myself. Athletics can be very stressful. It can cause a lot of

:10:30. > :10:32.problems mentally. For me, I don't train all year to get to the start

:10:33. > :10:38.line and be nervous so I want to come here, do my best and keep

:10:39. > :10:47.enjoying it. Great attitude, Danny, all the best. Thank you.

:10:48. > :10:48.Very good indeed from Danny Talbot. Equalling his personal best. Nine

:10:49. > :11:16.more heats to come. Holly Bradshaw getting ready for her

:11:17. > :11:21.next attempt. The first go at 4.60 is a good one. Bradshaw in the

:11:22. > :11:27.final. That is automatic qualification. She can stop their

:11:28. > :11:38.knowing that she is in the final in Friday. -- on Friday. She knows how

:11:39. > :11:44.to get it right when it matters. Holly Bradshaw looking really good.

:11:45. > :11:50.Just four jumps, three of them successful.

:11:51. > :11:53.Now the second heat of the men's 200 metres. The start list contains

:11:54. > :12:07.Yohan Blake. There is Yohan Blake. He goes in

:12:08. > :12:19.lane six here. European champion is at the bottom

:12:20. > :12:33.of your picture. Amir Webb was third at the US trials

:12:34. > :12:48.behind Justin Gatlin and LaShawn Merritt.

:12:49. > :13:01.Yacoub could be a quick feed this one. Ameer Webb are working, Yohan

:13:02. > :13:07.Blake on the outside. Look at them coming through on the line.

:13:08. > :13:18.Hortelano. Still in contention. Am a web has to be quickly. -- Ameer

:13:19. > :13:24.Webb. Joanne Blake, 20.12 -- Chohan Blake.

:13:25. > :13:32.He was running below 19 for 200, but looking strong once more, Blake. It

:13:33. > :13:36.has been good to see him back, torrid time with hamstring injuries

:13:37. > :13:40.and illness. This young man, that it wasn't for a certain Usain Bolt, he

:13:41. > :13:46.would be the world record-holder for the 100m and 200m. The second

:13:47. > :13:51.fastest in history for both of these events and you can see why, here's a

:13:52. > :13:57.competent runner, enjoys running the 200, because for him, it is a

:13:58. > :14:03.novelty and he loves the competition challenging the sprinters.

:14:04. > :14:14.Competitive time from the Spaniard. All in all, it was a good race.

:14:15. > :14:22.Blake and Hortelano going through, only to go through. A good start

:14:23. > :14:28.from Blake, you would expect that for a 200m runner, powerfully built,

:14:29. > :14:32.the bend not his best bit but he loves coming off the bend and

:14:33. > :14:36.opening up his stride. Very relaxed, coming back from the injury as Colin

:14:37. > :14:40.and Steve have mentioned and it has been a tough situation for him.

:14:41. > :14:44.Usain Bolt, we were talking about him earlier this year and saying he

:14:45. > :14:48.hadn't been used to injuries and so didn't know how to handle it and

:14:49. > :14:52.Usain Bolt said he tried to come back too early too many times, so

:14:53. > :14:56.the injury was extended over almost three years, but it is nice to have

:14:57. > :15:01.him back and he should figure possibly into the medals for the

:15:02. > :15:08.200m. Michael Johnson talking into those images, Usain Bolt, saying you

:15:09. > :15:11.could be back in the medals. It was fantastic to be back doing what you

:15:12. > :15:18.are doing? I feel really good. My coach has started me, but the

:15:19. > :15:22.injuries and everything oral behind me and I feel really good, I

:15:23. > :15:25.recuperate, I put the 100 behind me and focus on the 200. Has it always

:15:26. > :15:32.been your favourite event, would you say? A little bit, yes. I'm happy,

:15:33. > :15:36.feeling really good. Tell me about the difficult years, did you think

:15:37. > :15:40.you would get back to this point? To be honest, I am human and sometimes

:15:41. > :15:44.I felt I wouldn't, but God is good and I keep on believing myself, my

:15:45. > :15:50.coach and my family and friends, they have since supporting me and I

:15:51. > :15:54.am happy. It is good to see you and keep it up.

:15:55. > :16:02.So the result is actually given to Hortelano. So well done, Bruno,

:16:03. > :16:10.taking it from Yohan Blake. Ameer Webb, only for of the fastest losers

:16:11. > :16:20.go through -- four. So Ameer Webb may be struggling with that. Yes,

:16:21. > :16:24.that 20.31 clocking, both Ameer Webb and Zirconis have exactly the same

:16:25. > :16:32.time for third spot in heats one and two. There is Aaron Brown of Canada.

:16:33. > :16:39.They have some talent in this event at the moment. Aaron Brown, Brendan

:16:40. > :16:53.Rodney, the grass. They have such talent here. -- Degrasse.

:16:54. > :17:04.Guliyev, formerly of Azerbaijan, in lane six. Cadigan, another American

:17:05. > :17:11.who has changed countries. The Iberian flag is almost like one star

:17:12. > :17:17.and stripes, he hasn't had to change much. Guliyev, what a year he had

:17:18. > :17:23.last year, finished second in the European Championships recently

:17:24. > :17:34.held. Last year, he was under 20 seconds. Iizuka, what a danger he

:17:35. > :17:42.could be to Aaron Brown. He is in lane three, the former junior world

:17:43. > :17:46.champion. Brown was second in the 100 and 200 in the Canadian

:17:47. > :17:50.Championships. Really disappointing in the 100m here. May have been a

:17:51. > :18:01.few nerves, but really needs to be better here. So Brown, Iizuka,

:18:02. > :18:10.Guliyev. Outside them, Cadogan, Matadi, lots of opportunities. Even

:18:11. > :18:18.the Bahraini an record-holder in lane five. Most of them are just

:18:19. > :18:20.discarding the photo finish, they can't get them to stick on. You can

:18:21. > :18:33.see a few of them on the track. It has been rather notable, hasn't

:18:34. > :18:36.it, the Japanese athletes doing pretty well, if not so much getting

:18:37. > :18:45.amongst the medals but already thinking about Tokyo. Hoping to have

:18:46. > :18:48.strong representation in most of the track and field events. Their

:18:49. > :19:06.sprinters have been doing very well in recent years. Guliyev in six,

:19:07. > :19:07.Brown is in two, Iizuka in three. Heat three, top two qualified by

:19:08. > :19:15.rights. Cleanly away and Brown actually gets

:19:16. > :19:21.away very well indeed and has already taken a couple of metres out

:19:22. > :19:27.of Iizuka. Guliyev with a bit of work to do but it is Aaron Brown and

:19:28. > :19:31.right there in the middle, Yacoub going very well. Guliyev finishing

:19:32. > :19:39.quickly. It will be Aaron Brown and it is tied. Brown may have been run

:19:40. > :19:47.out of it by Guliyev. Well, sale Yacoub with a 20.20 clocking and

:19:48. > :19:53.that will be another national record for the Bahraini. -- Yaqoob. Brown

:19:54. > :19:58.ran a very good start, and pretty good around the bend. He looked as

:19:59. > :20:03.though he had it all in the bag and Juliet finished so strongly. How

:20:04. > :20:09.many times have we seen this in qualifying rounds -- rounds. They

:20:10. > :20:13.think they have done enough, take their foot of the gas and get

:20:14. > :20:18.sneaked by somebody they can't see. Brown is going to get covered by the

:20:19. > :20:22.eventual winner and he can't see what is happening to his right hand

:20:23. > :20:26.side and that is what could have kept him out of the automatic

:20:27. > :20:31.selection positions. Let's have a look and see how close this is. He

:20:32. > :20:37.realises too late that he needs to dip and it may not have been enough

:20:38. > :20:43.for him. Colin, we will friezes, they have been given the same time

:20:44. > :20:47.but Guliyev has been given the nod -- we will freezes. Guliyev doesn't

:20:48. > :20:53.dip at all, maybe he thought he was cruising through. Let's have a look

:20:54. > :20:58.at Guliyev, he walks his way towards the line, he is not leaning. He does

:20:59. > :21:04.dip, but it is a bit early. But it is enough, it takes him through to

:21:05. > :21:13.the automatic qualifying time. The winning time has been taken down to

:21:14. > :21:18.20.19, and national record for Yaqoob. Guliyev given the nod,

:21:19. > :21:28.literally, over Aaron Brown, but he is quicker than the two thirds

:21:29. > :21:30.places from the first two heats. This is caballerial, became Cuba's

:21:31. > :21:46.first ever discus champion last year. -- cabbie -- row Caballero.

:21:47. > :21:52.Just shy of 65 metres down the left-hand side. Not quite in the

:21:53. > :21:58.form that we saw when she took victory last year. Fifth on the

:21:59. > :22:09.world list this year. Fourth round, the lead is still Perkovic, 69

:22:10. > :22:15.metres, still some way in front. So no improvement for Caballero, still

:22:16. > :22:22.in third place. So, then, here is Perkovic. Beat in last year, but has

:22:23. > :22:32.been absolutely superb this year, seven from seven. Side of the cage

:22:33. > :22:36.there. She was leaning sideways, a real technical flaw that, for

:22:37. > :22:40.someone so stable and consistent. Watch her left side go and fall over

:22:41. > :22:46.sideways, the discus goes the other way. But she knows how to correct

:22:47. > :22:54.that, as she did in the third round. Two throws remaining.

:22:55. > :22:58.Getting ready for the next heat, he'd four of the men's 200m. The

:22:59. > :23:03.fastest man, or the man we would have expected to be fastest in this

:23:04. > :23:09.heat, is not starting, France's of Antigua and Barbuda, 20-year-old who

:23:10. > :23:13.we have seen great things from -- Francis. He has had all sorts of

:23:14. > :23:18.injuries and operations on his knee and you hope it is not a recurrence

:23:19. > :23:25.of that. He has been going very well this season, but not here. You saw

:23:26. > :23:40.the 18-year-old who has been running well there.

:23:41. > :23:48.Leotlela, his name means "Gift". World Junior championship

:23:49. > :23:53.silver-medallist. The man getting all of the applause is two lanes

:23:54. > :24:05.outside him, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Vides. Herrera of

:24:06. > :24:12.Mexico, 30 now, but this season, a new national record and the last two

:24:13. > :24:19.heats have been one with national records, so there are some quick

:24:20. > :24:28.times out there. So the full line-up, Eseosa Desalu. Didier Kiki.

:24:29. > :24:36.Herrera in three. Leotlela in four. No Mikel Francis. Vides getting all

:24:37. > :24:51.of the Cheers. Smith of the Bahamas in seven. Roberto sky is -- Skyers

:24:52. > :24:56.of Chile in lane eight. Away they go, and to to go through

:24:57. > :25:03.automatically. Herrera of Mexico may be a contender, but the Brazilian

:25:04. > :25:09.Vides is being roared along. A good run by Italy inside. Herrera is

:25:10. > :25:16.clear. And then the Cuban Skyers finishing very strongly, he gets it

:25:17. > :25:20.just from Vides. So it was Herrera and then Skyers coming through, the

:25:21. > :25:27.Chilean, but the Mexican takes it, Herrera, and his time, 20.20 nine.

:25:28. > :25:32.Talk a little bit about Skyers, he won fairly quickly last year, 24 and

:25:33. > :25:36.32 in the Pan-American Games, he broke the record of Silvio Leonard,

:25:37. > :25:41.the man involved in that very close finish with Allan Wells in the 100

:25:42. > :25:47.in Moscow. Herrera took it just ahead of Skyers. It was a close race

:25:48. > :25:50.behind Herrera. It was a really good race. Herrera dominant from the

:25:51. > :25:55.start, got a great start, worked his way around that turn, came into the

:25:56. > :26:02.home straight and then he just lifts his knees and keeps it all going.

:26:03. > :26:07.But that scrap behind him was very interesting, from the Brazilian,

:26:08. > :26:10.from the Cuban, always going to take it. Steve Cram, can you remember the

:26:11. > :26:23.last great Brazilian sprinter, he was around in your era. Can you

:26:24. > :26:27.remember who it was? Cruz? He wasn't bad. Can you remember Robson Da

:26:28. > :26:33.Silva, he was a medallist at these championships, I think. He was

:26:34. > :26:37.involved in the flag carrying ceremony. There we are, Vides has

:26:38. > :26:44.given himself the chance and we are all getting ready for the next heat

:26:45. > :26:47.and that man there. STEVE CRAM: Justin Gatlin getting

:26:48. > :26:51.ready to go, it will be interesting to see what reception he gets having

:26:52. > :26:59.been booed in the 100m. He looks happy enough. Just compilation of

:27:00. > :27:05.that one. Herrera and Skyers going through automatically. With just

:27:06. > :27:17.four fastest losers, I don't think the time of Vides will be quick

:27:18. > :27:25.Paul pulled qualifiers success for Holly Bradshaw, top of the page. She

:27:26. > :27:37.goes into Friday's final come about in good company. Jennifer sewer, the

:27:38. > :27:40.World Indoor champion -- Suhr. It will be a tough competition for

:27:41. > :27:45.Holly Bradshaw but in amongst it, great to see.

:27:46. > :27:48.Holly, well done, tremendous performance. Tell me what you felt

:27:49. > :27:53.by going into the competition first of all. I have been feeling really

:27:54. > :27:57.good recently, I have had an amazing preparation camp where I was

:27:58. > :28:01.running, jumping personal bests, so that came as a surprise but I am in

:28:02. > :28:05.really great shape so I have to thank Team GB and the national

:28:06. > :28:09.lottery for supporting the training camp, because I did come here the

:28:10. > :28:12.best shape and I had a load of fun out there. My warm up was rocky but

:28:13. > :28:16.I into my groove in the competition and loved it. It is one thing to do

:28:17. > :28:20.in the training camp but another to do it on the Olympic stage and you

:28:21. > :28:25.have. Did you call on the experience you have had before, 2012 and all

:28:26. > :28:29.that? I have been training very well in training this year and struggling

:28:30. > :28:32.in competition, so I was a bit nervous coming into this but I

:28:33. > :28:35.jumped really, really well and things are starting to come together

:28:36. > :28:39.and everything I have learned over the past four years, being injured

:28:40. > :28:46.and from 2012, I have learned so much and I am a much more mature

:28:47. > :28:50.athlete and it counted out there today. The couple went out but I

:28:51. > :28:54.grafted, my coach said I crafted and I got through and I'm chuffed. That

:28:55. > :29:00.first Olympic final came so early in your career, didn't it? I had only

:29:01. > :29:05.been in the sport for four years, I was 20 years old, so I am much more

:29:06. > :29:08.mature now, I'm 24 and in my second Olympic final and so excited. It

:29:09. > :29:20.looks like you are enjoying it and we wish you well. Well done.

:29:21. > :29:30.Well, very happy athletes. He looks very deep in his own thoughts there.

:29:31. > :29:35.He was beaten in the 100 metres and was booed when he was introduced.

:29:36. > :29:40.There was a mixed reception when he stood up for his medal in the medal

:29:41. > :29:44.ceremony yesterday. He has yet to be introduced to the crowd here but

:29:45. > :29:54.that will happen in a second. Martinez will be in lane three. He

:29:55. > :29:58.ran well in Monaco. This guy ran very well in the season and then

:29:59. > :30:29.went to the European Championships and was awful. I do know why really.

:30:30. > :30:37.It is really interesting watching these heats because it has been

:30:38. > :30:48.pretty quick really. Danny Talbot, I am pleased he got into second.

:30:49. > :30:56.Equalised his personal best and through.

:30:57. > :31:10.Martinez will be able to chase the American. It should not be any

:31:11. > :31:19.problem for Gatlin to get through. We will feel ashore on merit in the

:31:20. > :31:20.200 metres shortly as well. Merit running so brilliantly -- LaShawn

:31:21. > :31:38.Merritt. It is warm with a little following

:31:39. > :32:25.breeze in the home straight. That is the slowest we have seen so

:32:26. > :32:31.far. Sometimes he does not do himself any favours. I know it is

:32:32. > :32:38.not easy. When Usain Bolt does it and looks around, I don't know. 60

:32:39. > :32:43.metres out? It was a little bit comfortable for Justin Gatlin. I

:32:44. > :32:52.think the biggest surprise was the strength of the wind. It has not

:32:53. > :32:56.been like that all day. Do you think he is encouraging him? Looks like he

:32:57. > :33:03.is saying, come on, try and challenge me. There are calm. Maybe

:33:04. > :33:11.he was inviting him to follow through. Can you lip read, Michael?

:33:12. > :33:16.Know I can't! That was a very good start. The way that Justin Gatlin

:33:17. > :33:21.runs, it does not look as smooth as Usain Bolt when he is not running

:33:22. > :33:32.fast. He is not running hard at all here. I think he and RAM on Gittens

:33:33. > :33:43.have trained before -- Ramon Gittens. Gatlin knows he is through.

:33:44. > :33:48.He may also think this is the race where he can get a little bit closer

:33:49. > :33:55.to Usain Bolt, not understanding what his conditions will be for the

:33:56. > :34:03.200 metres for this final. Gatlin has run 19.75 this year will stop he

:34:04. > :34:11.may feel he has an opportunity here. That was an easy qualification for

:34:12. > :34:17.him. Pretty slow and maybe that is why he was trying to give Gittens

:34:18. > :34:27.some encouragement because he was pipped on the line. He is not

:34:28. > :34:33.fastest to go through as a fastest loser.

:34:34. > :34:52.A big screen in the fourth round. That is her best so far. She is in

:34:53. > :35:04.second place anyway. It looks as if Robet-Michon has

:35:05. > :35:24.closed the gap somewhat. A gold medal may be out of reach.

:35:25. > :35:32.Robet-Michon what had a silver medal in the European Championships. She

:35:33. > :35:36.has thrown a new French record. Adam Gemili onto the track and just

:35:37. > :35:43.about ready in his heat for the men's 200 metres. He is team captain

:35:44. > :35:46.for Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the athletics team and a

:35:47. > :35:55.very popular team captain by all accounts. Just about ready to run.

:35:56. > :36:01.Steve, you asked Michael if he could lip read and I was watching and I

:36:02. > :36:10.think he said, right through to the line. He was giving him a bit of

:36:11. > :36:20.encouragement. Where did you go to lip reading lessons? I think it was

:36:21. > :36:28.encouragement, definitely. Adam Gemili had an injury last year. The

:36:29. > :36:33.right decision to concentrate on the 200? I think so. It is a favourite

:36:34. > :36:38.event of his and he runs it very well indeed. His first real success

:36:39. > :36:43.came in the 200 in the European Championships when he went under 20

:36:44. > :36:49.seconds in freezing cold conditions. We were all shivering in the

:36:50. > :36:56.commentary position. Added to that, Andrew, he was so disappointed in

:36:57. > :37:01.London to run close to the 22nd mark and he wanted more from himself. I

:37:02. > :37:06.remember when he first came out, he was so pleased to be there just

:37:07. > :37:11.enjoying the experience. I detect a touch of steel to the character now,

:37:12. > :37:16.that he realises he is actually a serious contender on the world

:37:17. > :37:22.stage. So, yes, he smiles and enjoys things but he knows he is a proper

:37:23. > :37:27.contender as well. He is waving to people in the crowd and smiling but

:37:28. > :37:36.when he gets into the starting blocks, he really focuses on what he

:37:37. > :37:41.needs to do and today he will need to do well. There is one of his

:37:42. > :37:50.major rivals in the race, Ashmead. You have to be in the top two or one

:37:51. > :38:03.of the fourth fastest losers. Well within the scope of Adam Jalili. It

:38:04. > :38:08.is by no means guaranteed. Usain Bolt is not too far away. Everyone

:38:09. > :38:13.getting very excited given that he will be running in a couple of heats

:38:14. > :38:34.from the end. This is how they line up.

:38:35. > :38:41.Very good conditions still. We saw the wind had switched around a bit.

:38:42. > :38:45.We can feel it a little bit in the commentary box, moving around. It

:38:46. > :38:49.was into the bases on the home straight in the last eight. That

:38:50. > :39:02.does matter if you are looking to become one of the fastest losers. A

:39:03. > :39:06.little bit of a delay here. You have to wait a long time if you are 200

:39:07. > :39:12.metre man and you don't run in the 100. There is nickel Ashmead --

:39:13. > :39:22.Nickel Ashmeade. Adam Gemili, you know you have

:39:23. > :39:25.arrived when you are special enough to get one of these select

:39:26. > :39:31.introductions because not every athlete here in Rio is being

:39:32. > :40:02.introduced to the crowd. He is in his first Olympic Games.

:40:03. > :40:05.Clarence Munyai, the 18-year-old South African champion goes in lane

:40:06. > :40:21.eight. Adam Gemili powers his way out of

:40:22. > :40:32.the blocks. Nickel Ashmeade always off to a good start. There is no

:40:33. > :40:37.doubt here who are the two going through. It is Adam Gemili and

:40:38. > :40:43.Nickel Ashmeade. The Jamaican takes it just ahead of Jamelia. -- Adam

:40:44. > :41:00.Gemili. It was a good run. Yes, a good run

:41:01. > :41:09.from Adam. This is his first time on this track. He will have looked at

:41:10. > :41:14.the start list and thought, yes, I can definitely do this and get

:41:15. > :41:23.through the qualifying rounds. The good thing about Adam is we say he

:41:24. > :41:27.has got great speed endurance. He has the ability to maintain it for a

:41:28. > :41:37.long time and in the 200 metres that is necessary. Time will tell us seem

:41:38. > :41:43.tools. As you get stronger, you get more competent -- time will tell as

:41:44. > :41:51.human chores. His time will come down in increments. Our 200 Guru

:41:52. > :41:57.watching from the studio, Michael, what did you make of that? It was a

:41:58. > :42:05.nice qualification for Adam. He has been sitting around for a long time

:42:06. > :42:11.to wait for this. He did not transition out into a bullet drive

:42:12. > :42:14.so that is something he will want to correct. He was on the outside of

:42:15. > :42:22.the lane. I did not like the transition from the bend, you want

:42:23. > :42:28.to be on the inside of the lane. Technically, there are not many

:42:29. > :42:32.people who are this clean. He is a very clean, very efficient sprinter.

:42:33. > :42:38.Every effort that he gives, every arm swing, it is propelling him

:42:39. > :42:44.forward and that is what you want, especially in a sprint as long as

:42:45. > :42:48.the 200 metres, when you want to conserve and get everything to the

:42:49. > :42:51.finish line as quickly as possible. He knows that was not the best race

:42:52. > :43:02.but it was a good qualification. Michael Johnson's verdict, a good

:43:03. > :43:10.qualification, but perhaps not your best rate Makovich race. I wanted to

:43:11. > :43:16.win it but the bends are really tight. I raised it as best I could

:43:17. > :43:20.but not as hard as I could. I qualified and that is all that

:43:21. > :43:25.matters. Overall, how are you feeling in yourself coming in?

:43:26. > :43:29.Really, really good, body is in a great place and really excited to go

:43:30. > :43:34.out there and start competing with these guys. It is going to be

:43:35. > :43:37.exciting, the semifinal. I know it is 81 for the guys back home but

:43:38. > :43:43.hopefully put myself in the final. I am confident -- it is a late one.

:43:44. > :43:49.You are so smiley and relaxed and yet focused on what you need to do

:43:50. > :43:53.at the same time, you are a contender. Absolutely, that is what

:43:54. > :44:00.I try to tell the team when I gave my team speech, you do what you have

:44:01. > :44:04.to do that works, I can be happy and smiley but instantly get into my

:44:05. > :44:09.focus. It's cool, I would have liked to win but I will work on that and I

:44:10. > :44:14.will go back and hopefully get a better lane for the semi. So we will

:44:15. > :44:22.see, but it is cool, thanks. Let's hope so, see you tomorrow. Yes, job

:44:23. > :44:25.done, but things to work on, a very good attitude from Adam Gemili,

:44:26. > :44:34.going through with Ashmeade, no fastest losers from this one. We

:44:35. > :44:43.still have four more heeds to go and in heat nine, this samba dancing...

:44:44. > :44:46.Is that samba? Not what that was. What I love about him, no matter

:44:47. > :44:53.where he is, he knows where the cameras are. Celebrations for

:44:54. > :44:58.Perkovic, one of two field events concluded here in this morning's

:44:59. > :45:06.session. Sandra Perkovic of Croatia took gold again, a successful

:45:07. > :45:13.defence, head of Robert-Michon of France. And here is confirmation of

:45:14. > :45:18.that win for Perkovic. As Christian Taylor did, successfully defended

:45:19. > :45:29.her Olympic title. The world champion Caballero took bronze.

:45:30. > :45:34.That is Churandy Martina. Again, got disqualified at the European

:45:35. > :45:41.Championships in the 200m. He did win the 100 after that. He has been

:45:42. > :45:44.going well this year, 20.11 is his season's best, but Brendon Rodney,

:45:45. > :45:50.looking forward to seeing the Canadian outside him in lane four.

:45:51. > :46:02.The man who is based in New York, long island. Trains there. A real

:46:03. > :46:10.talent, Brendon Rodney. 19.96 this year. So these are the two on paper

:46:11. > :46:16.you would expect to get through. Martina, just watch where he puts

:46:17. > :46:29.his feet. He is starting right on the outside of his lane. So safely

:46:30. > :46:34.away, Martina. Chasing down Brendon Rodney. Outside him, Houston. Nery

:46:35. > :46:38.Brenes is going well on the outside, the Costa Rican who ran in the 400m.

:46:39. > :46:45.Nery Brenes giving them a run for his money. And Rodney is run out.

:46:46. > :46:48.Well, Nery Brenes out in lane nine was easily the most impressive and I

:46:49. > :46:55.said I had been really looking forward to watching this Canadian

:46:56. > :46:58.talent and he wasn't very good. I might be being harsh, Colin, but if

:46:59. > :47:03.you come to the Olympic Games and you have run sub 20 and a lot of

:47:04. > :47:07.people are talking about how good the three Canadian 200m runners are,

:47:08. > :47:11.I am not sure he has run quick enough to go through as a fastest

:47:12. > :47:17.loser. I will check that, he is very close. I don't think so either. But

:47:18. > :47:23.Martina, obviously, we have seen him perform on numerous occasions. He

:47:24. > :47:28.worked hard around back then to get him into -- himself into second

:47:29. > :47:31.place. But the Costa Rican just sneaks past them all and takes the

:47:32. > :47:39.victory. I think the Canadian thought he had already qualified. He

:47:40. > :47:42.doesn't even look across. I know he is racing Martina and probably

:47:43. > :47:48.thinks Martina is the one to beat but I can just tell you, as we look

:47:49. > :47:54.at the result, 20.20 four Brenes, very comfortable. Martina getting

:47:55. > :47:58.ahead of Rodney. So at the moment, 20.34, he is the fourth fastest

:47:59. > :48:06.loser but we still have three heats to come.

:48:07. > :48:11.We do indeed, featuring amongst others at Usain Bolt, back in this

:48:12. > :48:15.stadium for the start of his 200m are sold. If he is going to complete

:48:16. > :48:19.the travel travel, this is the next stage. Good news for the British

:48:20. > :48:23.guys, they have qualified comfortably, Danny Talbot and Adam

:48:24. > :48:28.Gemili. Yes, Danny Talbot as a fastest loser, looks like he will

:48:29. > :48:31.get in. He ran a pretty good race. Obviously it will heat up in the

:48:32. > :48:39.semifinals, it will be tough for him but it is an to the semifinals. If

:48:40. > :48:42.he can get a personal best, who knows? That should be his objective.

:48:43. > :48:46.Adam Gemili, as I pointed out, not the best race but qualification and

:48:47. > :48:49.he will know what adjustments he needs to make and they are pretty

:48:50. > :49:01.easy, so that bodes well for him going into the semifinal. Hopefully

:49:02. > :49:06.he gets a better lane than lane two. Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, pronounced

:49:07. > :49:11.Nathanial, he is actually quite new to this, he has burst onto the scene

:49:12. > :49:14.this year, got himself selected for this championship. We don't know as

:49:15. > :49:21.much about him because he is not based in the UK. What do you know

:49:22. > :49:24.about him? He won the NCAA Championships, the big college

:49:25. > :49:27.championships. It is fierce, every week, top college athletes from

:49:28. > :49:33.around the world. Obviously mostly US-based but a lot of Jamaican,

:49:34. > :49:39.Trinidad, Baja me in and it is a fantastic system for development --

:49:40. > :49:44.Bahamian. Coaching is at the highest level and week in, week out, top

:49:45. > :49:48.level competition, so I would expect that he would be, in contrast to a

:49:49. > :49:53.lot of the other athletes, much better at navigating the rounds. He

:49:54. > :49:56.will have done that so many times at conference championships. He comes

:49:57. > :50:00.in through that system with a tremendous night of experience. The

:50:01. > :50:05.downside is the collegiate University system is a very long

:50:06. > :50:11.year. They start in February with the indoor system and the outdoor

:50:12. > :50:14.season races every week, so in many cases, by August, they have run it

:50:15. > :50:19.out. So we will see what happens with him. He is running in the heat

:50:20. > :50:23.at the Usain Bolt and I think we might be talking about Usain Bolt

:50:24. > :50:27.for quite a bit after that, so it will be interesting to see him. He

:50:28. > :50:31.left the UK when he was 13 and went to live in Jamaica but has always

:50:32. > :50:37.considered himself as British. Running at the moment in the US.

:50:38. > :50:41.Let's get on with heat eight, which features LaShawn Merritt.

:50:42. > :50:47.Andrew Cotter. He is in lane three, a man who is far far better known

:50:48. > :50:52.for his 400m running and played his part in the astonishing final the

:50:53. > :51:04.other night when the world record was broken by Wayde van Niekerk.

:51:05. > :51:16.Christophe Lemaitre in lane two. Just a few years ago, he was running

:51:17. > :51:28.such incredible times. 19 he ran in 2011 -- 19.80. McCann Artur in lane

:51:29. > :51:33.one. Julian Reister German. Bodrov. Bruno de Barros, they didn't boo

:51:34. > :51:36.him, despite him serving a suspension for doping. Reynier Mena

:51:37. > :51:49.and Zalewski in lane eight. The fourth fastest losers, we are

:51:50. > :52:00.down to Brendon Rodney hanging on. Two go through automatically. The

:52:01. > :52:05.noise for de Barros in lane six. But it is rainier Menard they will all

:52:06. > :52:10.be chasing down. Royce outside him has gone quickly. LaShawn Merritt

:52:11. > :52:17.leaving himself a bid to do but he will have the strength and in jury

:52:18. > :52:20.once. Reus there as well. Christophe Lemaitre comes through. LaShawn

:52:21. > :52:26.Merritt and Christophe Lemaitre go through automatically. 20.15, that

:52:27. > :52:31.is pretty impressive. He let himself more to do in the second 100 but

:52:32. > :52:36.LaShawn Merritt takes it ahead of Christophe Lemaitre, they are the

:52:37. > :52:40.two to go through automatically. It was a good strong finish by LaShawn

:52:41. > :52:46.Merritt, it is exactly what we expect to see him do. Remember that

:52:47. > :52:51.blistering semifinal he ran in the US championships, when he ran 19.70

:52:52. > :52:58.four. I am wondering how bruised he still feels by that defeat in the

:52:59. > :53:01.400m. Right on the inside, Christophe Lemaitre from France, he

:53:02. > :53:06.eases his way through past everybody else. He was never going to get onto

:53:07. > :53:16.the shoulder of LaShawn Merritt, but it was a good qualification from him

:53:17. > :53:20.and it is nice to see. A good start from LaShawn Merritt. He has been

:53:21. > :53:25.running really, really well in the 200m this year and even coming into

:53:26. > :53:31.the US championships, he had the fastest time in the world and then

:53:32. > :53:34.ran that 19.74. Here, he is easily qualifying, ran it differently,

:53:35. > :53:39.instead of blazing the turn, taking it easy on the turn and coming off

:53:40. > :53:44.the bend and uses that 400m strength and speed and endurance that Colin

:53:45. > :53:48.was talking about than the home stretch, to make sure he puts

:53:49. > :53:53.himself into the first qualifying position. Very good form. The

:53:54. > :53:57.advantage LaShawn Merritt has is he has the 400m strength that he can

:53:58. > :54:02.bring them to the 200, and the speed he has allows him to run these sorts

:54:03. > :54:06.of times. He has just started in the last year to really focus on the

:54:07. > :54:12.200m a lot more than he has in the past. He will be looking to take

:54:13. > :54:15.this man off in the semifinal and final. That will be interesting.

:54:16. > :54:19.LaShawn Merritt and Christophe Lemaitre through from that one and

:54:20. > :54:29.everyone getting excited again by the appearance of Usain Bolt. But

:54:30. > :54:38.the result of the previous heat. Reus, not quick enough as one of the

:54:39. > :54:42.fastest losers. You heard the roar, Michael

:54:43. > :54:47.Johnson's analysis is excellent but it doesn't always a listed a raw

:54:48. > :54:51.quite like that. It is Usain Bolt that gets that. They just absolutely

:54:52. > :54:55.love him, everywhere he goes in the world, they love Usain Bolt. Steve

:54:56. > :55:00.described it as a samba, I am not sure I would call it a samba and

:55:01. > :55:04.Denise is agreeing. He has danced his way into this stadium for a 200m

:55:05. > :55:09.heat which should be a walk in the park for him. Yes, it should be and

:55:10. > :55:14.he is enjoying this, this is the race that he loves but it is also

:55:15. > :55:20.the race, as he has mentioned before, that makes him more nervous

:55:21. > :55:24.than the 100. I think he will be interested in seeing how Justin

:55:25. > :55:28.Gatlin runs in this race, he would be interested in seeing how LaShawn

:55:29. > :55:33.Merritt runs. Those are the major competitors, at least two of them,

:55:34. > :55:37.but I still think he is confident here. One of the things about this

:55:38. > :55:41.race, the 200m, this year, we have talked about speed injury and sand

:55:42. > :55:45.that is one of the things that when you are injured, you may lose a

:55:46. > :55:48.little bit of that. You build it up in the winter and the fall and if

:55:49. > :55:56.you are injured and not able to work on that, you lose a bit of it so it

:55:57. > :56:00.will be interesting to see, the 19.89 he ran a London was impressive

:56:01. > :56:05.given he was coming off the injury but as he told us, he felt sluggish,

:56:06. > :56:11.felt a little ragged, soap it will be wondering what he may have done

:56:12. > :56:16.between then and now that may have given him competence or not. It is

:56:17. > :56:19.all down to your training. He has a great training group, they feed off

:56:20. > :56:25.each other, they have great energy and I think he is such a different

:56:26. > :56:30.athlete mentally to the one we saw last year to the one this year. It

:56:31. > :56:35.is about turning over those legs, that rhythm, that the execution of

:56:36. > :56:40.the bend, that I am sure he will have done in his preparation camp.

:56:41. > :56:45.Especially the winter camp, when you talk about insurance coming from

:56:46. > :56:51.there, he had a better stretch your training coming into Beijing. He

:56:52. > :56:55.did, what you're doing is building a base and you have to keep going back

:56:56. > :57:01.and refreshing that base, refreshing that base. After the injury at the

:57:02. > :57:04.Jamaican trials, you are near the end of the season and you can't

:57:05. > :57:09.spend the time going back and refreshing your base. You have to

:57:10. > :57:12.work on technique to be ready the 100m. He said to assess the

:57:13. > :57:17.Anniversary Games that he had a bit of work to do on this, so let's see

:57:18. > :57:20.if it comes to fruition. Steve Cram.

:57:21. > :57:27.STEVE CRAM: Thank you. The great man has been introduced. Ahmed Ali on

:57:28. > :57:30.the inside. If you are not sure about his ability to draw the crowd,

:57:31. > :57:34.this is down the back straight and these are the tickets that have been

:57:35. > :57:39.sold for the 200m. Funnily enough, all of the seats are full to see the

:57:40. > :57:43.great man around that top then. No one wants to sit down the bottom end

:57:44. > :57:48.where they don't get such a good view. All want to get as close to

:57:49. > :57:59.Usain Bolt as they possibly can. Lane five... Already asking them to

:58:00. > :58:07.stand up. Why is that, then? He hadn't even started orchestrating

:58:08. > :58:11.things and the starter's jumped in. A little green card for everybody.

:58:12. > :58:40.He is just saying, be quiet. Everybody listens to Usain

:58:41. > :58:49.That standard like the starting klaxon in swimming.

:58:50. > :58:54.Anyway... -- that sounded like. It has gone very quiet.

:58:55. > :59:23.Usain Bolt has taken it easy around that Ben. He has realised Oduduru is

:59:24. > :59:31.behind him. He can just check back a little bit.

:59:32. > :59:43.Business as usual. No problems at all for Usain Bolt. A little bit of

:59:44. > :59:47.tidying up for us to do around the second-place, -- second was Oduduru,

:59:48. > :00:04.but tidying up around the third-place. Isn't it nice to stroll

:00:05. > :00:08.to reach that time? He does not charge around the bend. Just a

:00:09. > :00:14.competent bend. He is very much at home here. This is his favourite

:00:15. > :00:18.event. He is literally strolling down the home straight. Looking from

:00:19. > :00:23.side to side, making sure nobody is going to sneak past him. That

:00:24. > :00:34.guarantees him a good lane next time. This is his real skill, he

:00:35. > :00:39.gets into that lovely stride that he has. Six foot five, that stride

:00:40. > :00:49.length and is very long. -- is very long. Michael? Yes, let us see the

:00:50. > :00:57.start. A very good start. Now he is just relaxing around the bend. In

:00:58. > :01:02.fairness, there was nobody in this field that was even going to come

:01:03. > :01:08.close and look halfway competitive. So he can just jog around here.

:01:09. > :01:12.Looking at the rest of the field, this is one of the easier heats, so

:01:13. > :01:18.he is already relaxing after the bend. Not much to gain from this

:01:19. > :01:23.performance in this heat. A good thing for Usain Bolt, that he had

:01:24. > :01:27.one of the easier heats, so in terms of conditioning and what sort of

:01:28. > :01:32.shape he and he is basically able to get another day of rest, because

:01:33. > :01:37.this did not take much. He extended more probably in the warm up than he

:01:38. > :01:43.did in this race. He will be able to carry that advantage. And easy

:01:44. > :01:48.qualification. As we would have expected. We will see more when it

:01:49. > :01:59.heats up in the semifinals. The winning time, 20.28. Bockarie will

:02:00. > :02:07.not qualify. Brendan Rodney is still holding on the fastest loser spot.

:02:08. > :02:13.He looks a little weary as he walks of. Has he done an autograph for

:02:14. > :02:25.himself on his own shoes? Never mind. Anyway, here's already

:02:26. > :02:40.starting on his media interviews. He is already with Phil.

:02:41. > :02:49.I am a little bit tired now. It is the first round in the morning, I

:02:50. > :02:55.hate the morning. Looking forward to tomorrow. You say that you get more

:02:56. > :02:59.nervous for the 200, but it is your favourite event. Yes, because it is

:03:00. > :03:06.my favourite event. I never want to do anything bad. Thank you for

:03:07. > :03:12.stopping to speak to us. Thank you. That is what you call a quick chat

:03:13. > :03:21.from Usain Bolt. It did not look like his signature on his shoes.

:03:22. > :03:28.Maybe someone had to write on them so no one took his shoes, that there

:03:29. > :03:33.has. They would cost quite a lot of money. In London when he said he

:03:34. > :03:35.needed more races but would not get them, we were talking about the

:03:36. > :03:43.effect of having races without others, would today not have been an

:03:44. > :03:49.opportunity to work harder? I would have expected that, but he was

:03:50. > :03:54.talking about races back-to-back to get out of him, and he is a little

:03:55. > :04:01.bit tired. So he thought the better thing to do is take it easy and use

:04:02. > :04:07.that semifinal as opposed to using this race. It could have taken more

:04:08. > :04:13.out of him than helping him more to prepare him for the final. You speak

:04:14. > :04:18.about the importance of the bend and staying close to the inside lane, in

:04:19. > :04:21.his case, because he is so tall, is it more difficult for Usain Bolt? It

:04:22. > :04:26.would be more difficult for him. He has the luxury of being able to run

:04:27. > :04:29.on the outside if he chooses. If you look at the race when he broke the

:04:30. > :04:41.world record, he was running to the inside of the lane, and moved as he

:04:42. > :04:44.came out of the lead bend. He is so much taller, so depending on what

:04:45. > :04:49.lane he is in he wants to be closer to the outside. Let us get on to the

:04:50. > :04:54.last heat of these last 200 metres. Nathanial Mitchell Blake features in

:04:55. > :05:05.this. Yes, saving almost the best till

:05:06. > :05:15.last. Usain Bolt says he gets nervous ahead of the 200 metres, and

:05:16. > :05:19.Mitchell-Blake is going through this, because people are not

:05:20. > :05:22.familiar with him because he has not come through the system. He will

:05:23. > :05:37.like to prove a point, but he is quick. 19.95 he ran. Fifth that the

:05:38. > :05:51.Europeans. Da Silva lives in Brazil. An extra boost to the crowd. De

:05:52. > :05:53.Grasse also goes in this race, as does Adams. So it is a difficult one

:05:54. > :06:03.for Mitchell-Blake. De Grasse got bronze in the 100

:06:04. > :07:03.metres. Mitchell-Blake just get

:07:04. > :07:10.second-place. The winning time was very brisk from Andre De Grasse. But

:07:11. > :07:16.Mitchell-Blake earned that second-place and goes through

:07:17. > :07:25.automatically. A tough race but a first taste of the Olympic

:07:26. > :07:30.experience. He is through. That is good to see. We have spoken about

:07:31. > :07:33.the Canadian sprinters, and said there are 200 metres sprinters had

:07:34. > :07:42.let them down, but not here. Andre De Grasse has done the 100 metres

:07:43. > :07:46.already. He has 95 over this business, -- distance, so here's the

:07:47. > :07:52.real deal. National record-holder in both. And Mitchell-Blake battled his

:07:53. > :08:16.way through to take second place. I think Sorrillo had to battle

:08:17. > :08:21.weapon. Mitchell-Blake knew that De Grasse was the. So he leaned in.

:08:22. > :08:30.That is what you need to do in these circumstances. Michael? Yes, I did

:08:31. > :08:36.start. We talked about him wanting to be on the outside lane because --

:08:37. > :08:40.the outside of the lane because he is in lane one. Just struggling.

:08:41. > :08:45.Looks a bit tired around this entire 200 metres. Unfortunately he was

:08:46. > :08:52.drawn in a heat that was quick in contrast to what we saw deviously

:08:53. > :08:57.with Usain Bolt. That will not work on his advantage for the semifinal

:08:58. > :09:03.because he will have expended a lot of energy in this race. The best

:09:04. > :09:10.thing to do, he is through, he will recover, regenerate and spend the

:09:11. > :09:15.next 24 hours on that. It has been a long season but he through to the

:09:16. > :09:19.semifinal, which is what is most important to him.

:09:20. > :09:30.Well done, that was a tremendous performance. Yes, despite the laden

:09:31. > :09:35.drop, I was happy to be here. You have been based in the States and

:09:36. > :09:42.have done sensational things, and now the British public can see what

:09:43. > :09:47.you can do on this stage. Yes, my College and I had a plan, I messed

:09:48. > :09:51.up a bit early in the year, but we're ready. What kind of shape do

:09:52. > :09:57.you feel you were coming in into the Olympics, it has been a long season?

:09:58. > :10:01.I'm feeling good right now, that is the main thing. Tomorrow is another

:10:02. > :10:06.round, another showcase, for the world in Great Britain. Thank you

:10:07. > :10:22.very Andre De Grasse and Mitchell-Blake

:10:23. > :10:30.going through. The Canadian Brendan Rodney will miss out.

:10:31. > :10:35.Mitchell-Blake speaks quickly and moves quickly, I can match him with

:10:36. > :10:43.the speaking! The British men have all qualified, in close times.

:10:44. > :10:51.20.24, 20.29, just hundreds of a second. Is Mitchell-Blake the real

:10:52. > :11:00.deal? He is. 19.95, you do not do that without being the real deal.

:11:01. > :11:04.You have Andre De Grasse from the 100 metres, bronze medallist,

:11:05. > :11:16.running with him. Mitchell-Blake doesn't panic, runs his own race,

:11:17. > :11:18.focuses on the qualification. In the collegiate system he knows he has to

:11:19. > :11:23.be patient, keep doing what he is doing. We discuss athletes who have

:11:24. > :11:27.potential going through to the next round, going out in rounds, and that

:11:28. > :11:33.sort of experience is very valuable for him in the collegiate system. It

:11:34. > :11:37.has been a difficult year in terms of preparation because it has been a

:11:38. > :11:43.long season, so this will be tough, but he has got a good future ahead

:11:44. > :11:49.of him. He has run under 20 seconds, which is not easy. We want to see

:11:50. > :11:53.all these medalists tomorrow, then they start again. Yes, it is about

:11:54. > :12:02.just being ready, because the semifinals will be tough. Be fresh,

:12:03. > :12:08.I will see you later, have something to eat and get yourselves ready for

:12:09. > :12:13.a long session tonight. It is going to be great. The weather was

:12:14. > :12:18.glorious. Let us pray that the rain does not come back, Hazel.

:12:19. > :12:23.The forecast is good. It is always beautiful down here at the beach. We

:12:24. > :12:30.have enjoyed athletics this morning. Usain Bolt safely through on a

:12:31. > :12:33.little bit of a jog, maybe a canter. Full speed in the velodrome this

:12:34. > :12:40.morning, with the British athletes again. Cycling in the velodrome has

:12:41. > :12:46.produced the most medals in the last three games for Great Britain. The

:12:47. > :12:53.domination does not show signs of slowing. We saw Mark Cavendish. He

:12:54. > :13:02.had his first silver medal in the Omnium last night. This morning in

:13:03. > :13:03.the women's sprint we have had Betty, up first in the

:13:04. > :13:31.quarterfinals. -- Becky James. James trailing on this occasion.

:13:32. > :13:35.Becky Just to reiterate, the riders have to use the shape of the track

:13:36. > :13:38.to gain an advantage. We have hiked more in the banking Stan on the

:13:39. > :13:46.straight, it gives good acceleration. With the hype comes

:13:47. > :13:53.extra distance. The road around the top is 26 metres further than around

:13:54. > :13:55.the button -- bottom. The riders will use those things, it is a

:13:56. > :14:03.blending of physics with sheer horsepower. The writer at the back

:14:04. > :14:07.does not this assembly have a disadvantage from being further

:14:08. > :14:11.back. They have the potential to accelerate into slipstream and

:14:12. > :14:20.surprise. James gaining height. Her opponent obliged to do the same.

:14:21. > :14:23.Zhong Tianshi on the front. She came through a repechage, which also

:14:24. > :14:31.included the defending champion from Australia, Anna Meares. She is now

:14:32. > :14:37.finding her sprinting legs. How much of a test will this be for Becky

:14:38. > :14:44.James? They take the bell. She is showing real confidence. Waiting for

:14:45. > :14:51.the right moment to sprint. Confidence, pace, speed, desire. It

:14:52. > :14:57.is tight, but she has it by half they will. There was something of a

:14:58. > :15:04.surprise. Superior acceleration in the back straight. I was not

:15:05. > :15:07.expecting the second dash. The world champion was not about to give up

:15:08. > :15:13.the first race without a fight, and she took it all the way to the line.

:15:14. > :15:17.Becky James had to dig in. Halfway down the back straight, she looked

:15:18. > :15:21.as if she was going to sail past her and take a relatively

:15:22. > :15:26.straightforward victory, but not quite the case. Zhong Tianshi

:15:27. > :15:31.accelerated again into the home straight, very clever to hold

:15:32. > :15:38.something back for that. In the end, the extra height from being on the

:15:39. > :15:44.outside, which -- once she had drawn level, was enough. A good start from

:15:45. > :15:56.a British point of view, the final day in the velodrome. Katy Marchant

:15:57. > :15:59.on the track now, against an experienced rider, Simona

:16:00. > :16:05.Krupeckaite from Lithuania, ranked 12th in the women's keirin, a

:16:06. > :16:10.two-time world champion. Let's see if she can do the same. Neither of

:16:11. > :16:16.the British riders have lost a match yet. Simona Krupeckaite from

:16:17. > :16:25.Lithuania. On the front on this opening lap. She is the former world

:16:26. > :16:34.champion in the 500 metres time trial and the keirin. In 2009 and

:16:35. > :16:36.2010 she finished with a silver medal in the sprint World

:16:37. > :16:43.Championship on three occasions, did not quite manage to stand on the top

:16:44. > :16:50.of the podium. She was up against Anna Meares and Victoria Pendleton

:16:51. > :16:53.at their best. It looks like Katy Marchant would like to emulate the

:16:54. > :17:02.performance of Becky James, writing in a similar style, drawing closer.

:17:03. > :17:05.Kicking back. Simona Krupeckaite had put some backwoods pressure on the

:17:06. > :17:15.pedals to try and force her to come through. She was aware of that. Katy

:17:16. > :17:19.Marchant makes a move on the inside. Simona Krupeckaite, a lapse in

:17:20. > :17:25.concentration. She is going for a long one. We have only seen one of

:17:26. > :17:30.these income position thus far. By looking over her shoulder, she

:17:31. > :17:36.tricked her into thinking she was easing, but she is out of the

:17:37. > :17:43.slipstream. What a mistake. Tactically astute from ten macro.

:17:44. > :17:46.You have to take your chance whenever it appears, and she felt

:17:47. > :17:50.the door had been left ajar. She pushed it wide open and raced

:17:51. > :17:57.through. More experience than her years. To be able to do that and

:17:58. > :18:02.change tactics instantaneously, looking at the scenario around her,

:18:03. > :18:07.that was quite something. Taking the front line, expected to come up

:18:08. > :18:14.again. She kept the pressure on and got the distance. Simona Krupeckaite

:18:15. > :18:19.nodded off for a moment and paid the price. She will have to win the next

:18:20. > :18:27.match between them, otherwise Katy Marchant will go through to the

:18:28. > :18:32.semifinal. The second match in this best-of-3 quarterfinal in the

:18:33. > :18:39.women's sprint, Becky James from Abergavenny in South Wales. She

:18:40. > :18:45.leads a 1-0. Against the current world champion. Becky James looked

:18:46. > :18:49.in control of that first race, but Zhong Tianshi put up a stubborn

:18:50. > :18:56.resistance in the finishing straight. Zhong Tianshi has shown

:18:57. > :19:02.her hand now. It was a clever move to hold a bit back for the final

:19:03. > :19:09.corner. Becky James already had the speed coming around the outside. She

:19:10. > :19:14.made it close. We have seen all that both riders have to offer. James the

:19:15. > :19:19.favourite for this one. But as we have seen, it is close enough that

:19:20. > :19:24.there is no room for error at all. James leading out this time. A

:19:25. > :19:34.different type of sprint required here. Plenty of space being given.

:19:35. > :19:42.James keeps it down the bottom so she only has to look at one side,

:19:43. > :19:47.but now moving up, to give herself some ability to accelerate, using

:19:48. > :19:56.the shape of the track. Keeping the speed and slowly increasing it. The

:19:57. > :20:01.tension ratchets up. So does the speed. The sprint will be on

:20:02. > :20:06.shortly. Becky James will be three to the semifinal if she can win this

:20:07. > :20:17.race. Here we go. She will try to win from the front. Zhong Tianshi

:20:18. > :20:22.looks to draw level. Becky James is scrapping for all she is worth, she

:20:23. > :20:27.has the speed to hang gone. She is through in straight rides to the

:20:28. > :20:31.semifinal of the women's sprint. Nicely done. The race was on the

:20:32. > :20:38.back straight. She just had to hold her off to the final bend. Once the

:20:39. > :20:42.speed was equal before the final curve, it was clear who was going to

:20:43. > :20:47.get it, but it was a fight all the way to the line. It is a win in

:20:48. > :20:51.straight rides, and no wonder Becky James is smiling. She does not have

:20:52. > :20:56.to go to a deciding grace, and she has also knocked out the current

:20:57. > :21:01.world champion. Riding up against the red line. She could just get a

:21:02. > :21:07.tiny bit of acceleration in the home straight. All of that craft at such

:21:08. > :21:15.high speeds. Always fascinating to watch. The British rider through to

:21:16. > :21:18.the last four in the women's sprint. While she rides around the bottom of

:21:19. > :21:28.the track and comes to a halt and prepares to warm down, Katy Marchant

:21:29. > :21:35.will be up any second. Katy Marchant leads in her quarterfinal as well,

:21:36. > :21:38.against Simona Krupeckaite of Lithuania. Simona Krupeckaite the

:21:39. > :21:41.world silver medallist in this event three times, with a lot of

:21:42. > :21:47.experience. And yet in the first match she nodded off to sleep for

:21:48. > :21:53.half a second and Katy Marchant saw the opportunity. Early as it was,

:21:54. > :21:57.she was still prepared to take it. We have only seen that once before

:21:58. > :22:02.in this competition. It is the sign of a world-class sprinter. You can

:22:03. > :22:10.have your plan and adapted in an instant. That is exactly what she

:22:11. > :22:15.did. Maturity beyond her years is what we saw in that previous round.

:22:16. > :22:20.Can she do the same thing again? That is what is so good about this,

:22:21. > :22:30.the mixture of your speed and nerve and tactical acumen. She is leading

:22:31. > :22:35.out this time. The beauty of a surprise tactic, your opposition has

:22:36. > :22:40.not really had a look at everything you have got to offer, you keep them

:22:41. > :22:47.guessing. Not quite sure what you are going to do next. The speed

:22:48. > :22:53.increasing early. Two laps to go. Much quicker heat, this one. She is

:22:54. > :23:04.being harried. Simona Krupeckaite getting height, trying to push Katy

:23:05. > :23:08.Marchant into leading out early. Here we go. If Katy Marchant wins,

:23:09. > :23:16.she will be through to the semifinals, but Simona Krupeckaite

:23:17. > :23:20.will fight. Katy Marchant at the moment looks as if she will get it,

:23:21. > :23:28.and she does, with ease, well done, superb sprinting. And in straight

:23:29. > :23:32.rides. She joins Becky James in the last four of the women's sprint.

:23:33. > :23:39.Incredible. Simona Krupeckaite made a mistake again, a tactical mistake,

:23:40. > :23:45.being drawn onto the wheel, so no slipstream to use. When she stepped

:23:46. > :23:49.out, barely equal on power, and she could not move forward, she found

:23:50. > :23:54.herself to length down and could do nothing about it. I bet even Katy

:23:55. > :23:58.Marchant could not quite believe the ease with which she won the second

:23:59. > :24:05.race. She is up against strong competition here. Clearly at home.

:24:06. > :24:12.Reform is the confidence coming, and rightly so. The way she is riding is

:24:13. > :24:17.fantastic. Both British riders through in the women's sprint.

:24:18. > :24:26.You will see the semifinals at 8pm to night. Becky James will be up

:24:27. > :24:34.against Elis Ligtlee, who won gold in the keirin, and Katy Marchant

:24:35. > :24:39.will play against Kristina Vogel. It is the start of the men's keirin,

:24:40. > :24:44.this is the title that was won by Chris Hoy in the last two Olympics.

:24:45. > :24:48.If Jason Kenny were to emulate him, he would match him for six gold

:24:49. > :24:54.medals and join him at the top of the heap in British sport. Also in

:24:55. > :25:00.action, Alan Skinner, who already has one team gold medal and a saw

:25:01. > :25:04.the medal behind Jason Kenny in the individual sprint. It is going well

:25:05. > :25:09.for the new star of the track cycling team. And Callum Skinner is

:25:10. > :25:22.who we will see first, in the third heat.

:25:23. > :25:42.Eight laps of the track. Sam Webster from New Zealand.

:25:43. > :25:48.Callum Skinner in sixth place at the moment, with the Venezuelan in front

:25:49. > :25:54.of him. We have seen already that riders at the back have the

:25:55. > :25:59.opportunity to start accelerating a lot earlier before the bike pulls

:26:00. > :26:03.off, to get themselves into the preferred positions, so they carry

:26:04. > :26:12.the speed as soon as the race opens up. That is the possible tactic here

:26:13. > :26:15.of Callum Skinner and Azizulhasni Awang. Azizulhasni Awang knows what

:26:16. > :26:21.Callum Skinner's tactics will be, and hoping to be carried through.

:26:22. > :26:25.Azizulhasni Awang has the ability to flit around among the wheels and

:26:26. > :26:31.make sure that he is in a position to potentially win a medal. He has

:26:32. > :26:36.chosen his strategy. He is a clever writer, he can change tactics so

:26:37. > :26:40.quickly. That is critical in this event. You might have your own

:26:41. > :26:50.plans, but they change as they bump into those of other riders. This is

:26:51. > :26:57.the first round of the men's keirin. The third heat of four. Webster on

:26:58. > :27:02.the front for New Zealand, the Dutchman behind him, the Frenchman

:27:03. > :27:10.third. Then it is the poll. Then, the Venezuelan. Callum Skinner, and

:27:11. > :27:17.the Malaysians. The pace increasing all the time. They will be racing

:27:18. > :27:22.next time, because the motorbike is swinging off, and Callum Skinner

:27:23. > :27:27.leaving his charge late. Webster has daylight. He can see the Dutchman

:27:28. > :27:36.leaving himself some space to accelerate into. Webster has gone

:27:37. > :27:43.for an early one, he is leading now. Matthijs Buchli is in second. Callum

:27:44. > :27:50.Skinner a bit further back. Webster leads, the Netherlands in second

:27:51. > :27:54.place, Francois Pervis in third place. Callum Skinner in last place.

:27:55. > :27:57.Webster takes it on the line, and there was a tight sprint between

:27:58. > :28:04.Matthijs Buchli and Francois Pervis for second place. It is Matthijs

:28:05. > :28:07.Buchli. Callum Skinner realised he was not in the position on the track

:28:08. > :28:11.that he wanted to Beattie challenge at the front of the race. I

:28:12. > :28:18.mentioned the different tack takes that bump into each other. It was

:28:19. > :28:22.Matthijs Buchli, by laying off so much, that caused the speed to be

:28:23. > :28:27.very high straightaway. This ability to rush from the back, the

:28:28. > :28:31.opportunity was taken away from Callum Skinner, and he was pinned in

:28:32. > :28:40.place. I think it was Matthijs Buchli who got that.

:28:41. > :28:49.It was a close run thing. Webster took it from the front Webster was

:28:50. > :29:12.very businesslike. Another seven on the track. A busy

:29:13. > :29:23.scenario in the final couple of laps.

:29:24. > :30:03.The derny comes out. An early lead out, he held out well.

:30:04. > :30:12.The speed slowly increases with each passing lap. Webster went for a long

:30:13. > :30:17.one in the previous ride, is showing that it can be one in several

:30:18. > :30:22.different ways. It is hard to work out the tactics. Jason Kenny is

:30:23. > :30:37.sitting right in the middle at the minute. Chris Hoy used to go to the

:30:38. > :30:41.front and part away and stay there. The big acceleration is come the

:30:42. > :30:46.straight. On the banking you have to go an extra three metres when you

:30:47. > :30:56.come around. If you go ) the outside, another five. Almost

:30:57. > :31:22.impossible. It is in the Straits they can make a difference.

:31:23. > :31:27.Jason Kenny is quick to go to the front. There is some daylight now.

:31:28. > :31:50.Time to see when everyone is. Jason Kenny was looking super-sharp.

:31:51. > :31:54.He crosses the line with Puerta also in the top two. Jason Kenny just

:31:55. > :32:03.thought he was not going to try to do anything clever, just to power it

:32:04. > :32:10.on, get himself into pole position and Sprint. That is exactly what he

:32:11. > :32:16.did. Behind him they tussled for position. But it was never in doubt.

:32:17. > :32:20.That was scorching. This was rather dangerous, I have to say, but it

:32:21. > :32:25.just shows the courage of the riders. Jason Kenny was doing just

:32:26. > :32:31.enough to qualify. Here is the confirmation. What a

:32:32. > :33:29.scorching ride from him. A high-quality experienced field.

:33:30. > :33:35.The race is under way. Callum Skinner already showing what his

:33:36. > :33:45.tactics are. He will try to take it from the front. The other riders

:33:46. > :34:35.will not want to let him do that. They cannot pass an overlap the

:34:36. > :34:43.derny -- or overlap the derny at any point. Whatever happens, Callum

:34:44. > :34:47.Skinner has had a sensational Olympic Games in Brazil. Can he just

:34:48. > :34:58.keep his campaign going a little longer? He has the firepower, as he

:34:59. > :35:03.showed in the sprint, to write this from the front. If he is allowed to

:35:04. > :35:06.do that. The experienced riders and their are tactically superb in this

:35:07. > :35:21.mass sprint event. They are starting to leave those

:35:22. > :35:25.gaps. Callum Skinner is looking backwards, does not want to look

:35:26. > :35:30.backwards too early. He wants to keep control. He is doing a solid

:35:31. > :35:51.job. Just one we'll would do him well.

:35:52. > :36:01.Callum Skinner leads them to the line, and takes it! Great ride from

:36:02. > :36:07.Callum Skinner. He is through to the second round. That was a tough race.

:36:08. > :36:11.Well, he actually came down earlier in the back straight on top of the

:36:12. > :36:16.American before he had a clear by playing, so let us wait to see what

:36:17. > :36:23.the judges said. He has been given the qualifying place at the moment,

:36:24. > :36:28.but I'm not sure the judges like that in the back straight when he

:36:29. > :36:33.came down early. It was a hairy moment for the American. Here we go.

:36:34. > :36:40.I think he has come down too early. Let us see what the judges said. It

:36:41. > :36:47.certainly wasn't intentional. The American nearly ended up on the deck

:36:48. > :36:52.as a result of that. But Callum Skinner was certainly aggressive and

:36:53. > :36:59.decisive in that race. All the other elements were put together

:37:00. > :37:09.beautifully. He got himself into pole position. He made sure he was

:37:10. > :37:13.not boxed in. Absolutely textbook. There was just that one that he came

:37:14. > :37:18.down a little too early. I think they are looking at it right now.

:37:19. > :37:25.Two people watching a replay. It is the judge making the decision

:37:26. > :37:28.outside the track so that nobody interferes. It looks like they have

:37:29. > :37:33.come to a decision, I would be surprised if they do not do

:37:34. > :37:39.something about that. He would be lucky to get away with that. Callum

:37:40. > :37:46.Skinner was relegated in the repechage, he came down onto the

:37:47. > :37:49.racing line to quickly. He was relegated and it means that he

:37:50. > :37:54.finishes his first Olympic Games with a gold and silver, and that is

:37:55. > :37:56.not bad in the Olympic Games! You will be disappointed not to go

:37:57. > :38:10.through in the kierin today. What about Laura Trott? She stormed

:38:11. > :38:13.a head-to-head standings defending her Omnium title yesterday. Three

:38:14. > :38:21.more events today. And the time trial was today, and she was riding

:38:22. > :38:23.at the same time as the Belgian, who is with her in the overall

:38:24. > :38:41.standings. I think she will be under the 35

:38:42. > :38:47.second mark here. Here we go. What can Laura Trott do for this opening

:38:48. > :38:51.lap? 20.1 at the World Championships. She will want to be

:38:52. > :39:04.quicker if she can. Can she go under 20? No, fourth fastest time. She

:39:05. > :39:20.needs to dig in to get every thousandth of a second. She gained a

:39:21. > :39:24.couple of places. I thought Edmondson's time would be beaten,

:39:25. > :39:34.but it shows you on the day. The only rider to go under 35 seconds.

:39:35. > :39:45.In the four events, Laura Trott has finished second, first, first,

:39:46. > :39:55.second. It is as consistent as you could hope for. She will go into the

:39:56. > :40:04.points race... Laura Trott just winding down. She is leading this

:40:05. > :40:12.women's Omnium. Two events to go. Jolien D'Hoore is in the silver

:40:13. > :40:15.medal position, 12 behind her. And just four points painter, Sarah

:40:16. > :40:21.Hammer from the United States. You will be able to catch the

:40:22. > :40:26.conclusion, with two more events. The flying lap is at 9:10pm your

:40:27. > :40:31.time, and the fascinating points race, which was engrossing in the

:40:32. > :40:36.men's event, that is at 9pm. It is the last evening in the velodrome,

:40:37. > :40:41.it could be very significant. We're going to go to Badminton now. 24

:40:42. > :40:44.years ago Badminton was introduced into the Olympic programme, and

:40:45. > :40:48.since then Great Britain have won two medals, both of them and mixed

:40:49. > :40:53.doubles. But in men's doubles, the this site perhaps of a medal this

:40:54. > :40:59.time, courtesy of Marcus Ellis and 31-year-old Chris Langridge of

:41:00. > :41:03.Epsom. This pair have worked well together. They have worked out some

:41:04. > :41:07.very -- knocked out some good opponents. The number three seeds on

:41:08. > :41:12.the number eight seeds, and they are now up against the Chinese players.

:41:13. > :41:19.They are ranked number four. Again it is a stuff three games. The

:41:20. > :41:21.Britons have lost the first game. They have lots of work to do in the

:41:22. > :41:54.second. They should have -- they showed a

:41:55. > :41:56.lot of character in this. Unable to have two consecutive points yet in

:41:57. > :42:19.Game two. A few Brits in the crowd are making

:42:20. > :43:41.their presence felt. Surprised that he was there. It is

:43:42. > :43:53.down to one of the men in blue being there. With the

:43:54. > :43:59.dominance they had for a lot of the first game and some of the second,

:44:00. > :44:02.it seems to have gone now. It is about the Brits keeping the energy

:44:03. > :44:21.in the legs and the angle in the knees.

:44:22. > :44:28.Chris Langridge could not deal with the power. A miscommunication, Chris

:44:29. > :44:35.Langridge thought it was Marcus' shuttle. He got in the way a little.

:44:36. > :44:39.He is upset with himself there. It is the speed the Chinese team are

:44:40. > :45:36.playing with, it is tough to live with.

:45:37. > :45:51.Just too much. The two point lead re-emerges. The smash has been a

:45:52. > :45:55.dominant feature of the Chinese game. They have hit it with real

:45:56. > :46:19.sting, both of them. Did so well reading the serve, but

:46:20. > :46:22.not able to capitalise. A little greedy with that angle. But a great

:46:23. > :46:56.idea nonetheless. Just about staying in touch, but

:46:57. > :47:20.they have got to get a run going at some stage.

:47:21. > :47:33.Very evident as well, the physical intensity of Marcus Ellis

:47:34. > :47:42.Hunting down the shuttle aggressively.

:47:43. > :48:25.They have trailed by three and now at 15 each.

:48:26. > :48:34.What a patch this is for Langridge and Ellis.

:48:35. > :49:16.Well, they did win the point but that was quite astonishing.

:49:17. > :49:19.He was always going to be the target when he

:49:20. > :49:22.slipped to the floor and he was in no hurry to get up,

:49:23. > :49:30.but he did well, fended off a couple of blows, there!

:49:31. > :49:32.They say, don't take this lying down.

:49:33. > :49:42.Shows you the measure of the intensity, and we're

:49:43. > :50:01.Zhang and Fu so experienced in this kind of atmosphere.

:50:02. > :50:38.Marcus Ellis here just trying to get out of the way because I think here

:50:39. > :51:02.he felt the shuttle was going long, but is unable to do so.

:51:03. > :51:11.Saw the gap, very well directed, and they are level again.

:51:12. > :51:15.Good sense of being alert and calm simultaneously, mentally, there,

:51:16. > :51:28.He has really picked his game up in this second game.

:51:29. > :51:55.They might as well, it's getting late on.

:51:56. > :52:38.Somehow you sensed these two probably won't get tight.

:52:39. > :53:28.Two points away from the Olympic final.

:53:29. > :54:11.Just a little bit of fortune, but we will take anything right now.

:54:12. > :54:15.Heart-in-mouth moment as that bobbled on the top of the net.

:54:16. > :54:18.There it is in the end, clarity they are still

:54:19. > :54:40.A few more beads of sweat rubbed away.

:54:41. > :55:19.The Chinese got off to a terrific start and they

:55:20. > :55:25.A valiant effort from Chris Langridge

:55:26. > :55:31.and Marcus Ellis but they are beaten at the semifinal stage.

:55:32. > :55:33.Still a chance of a bronze medal, of course,

:55:34. > :55:46.but the Chinese go through to the final on Friday.

:55:47. > :55:52.The world number 22 pair have pledged above their weight, and

:55:53. > :55:57.there is still a chance of a bronze medal on Friday. They will play an

:55:58. > :56:04.unseeded Chinese pair. We will bring you up to speed with that on Friday.

:56:05. > :56:08.We are talking boxing now, Nicola Adams through to the semifinals in

:56:09. > :56:12.the defence of her flyweight title, she is guaranteed a medal. For

:56:13. > :56:17.Ireland, it has not been a great Olympics, a much flaunted team,

:56:18. > :56:20.Paddy Barnes and Katie Taylor went out in their first fight, and

:56:21. > :56:28.Michael Conlan was their remaining hope. All hopes rested on him going

:56:29. > :56:33.into his quarterfinal today against a Russian opponent. If he were to

:56:34. > :56:49.win, he would have a guaranteed bronze. The third and final round.

:56:50. > :56:53.The boxer who will progress through to the middle stages and the final

:56:54. > :56:57.four will be determined by the outcome of this.

:56:58. > :57:06.Look at how Vladimir Nikitin has begun this round. Michael Conlan

:57:07. > :57:14.looks fresher, can he demonstrate his talent? A left hook to the body

:57:15. > :57:18.from Vladimir Nikitin was not far away, but the man whose philosophy

:57:19. > :57:22.is not a single step back does not appear to have the energy to mount a

:57:23. > :57:31.sustained assault on his familiar front foot posture. That is the only

:57:32. > :57:33.way he will have success, Vladimir Nikitin, to push Michael Conlan

:57:34. > :57:38.back. Michael Conlan is boxing better on the back foot, he is

:57:39. > :57:45.hitting and moving. He is not getting hit himself. It was not

:57:46. > :57:48.awarded in the first round, he had a brilliant first round, but he has

:57:49. > :57:53.too produced the quality shots on the inside. A big left hook from

:57:54. > :57:59.Vladimir Nikitin. There was a right hand as well. But Michael Conlan

:58:00. > :58:04.steps back, and he is driving his man backwards. I think he hit

:58:05. > :58:10.Vladimir Nikitin downstairs. Vladimir Nikitin stepped back. Look

:58:11. > :58:16.at the manner in which Vladimir Nikitin's rhythm is being disrupted.

:58:17. > :58:21.Blocked by gloves and forearms. Michael Conlan fighting like a man

:58:22. > :58:25.possessed in pursuit of a place in the Olympic medal stages for the

:58:26. > :59:18.second successive Olympics. Vladimir Nikitin fighting on instinct.

:59:19. > :59:29.Nice movement with defeat, Michael Conlan changing the angle. Michael

:59:30. > :59:36.Conlan is finding the target. Still showing a bit of class, the

:59:37. > :59:40.Irishman. Inside the final ten seconds, both men letting their fans

:59:41. > :59:45.go as they try to impress the judges in a contest that was reduced to a

:59:46. > :59:53.three-minute shoot out, courtesy of some scoring which I do not

:59:54. > :59:58.understand. Michael Conlan responded brilliantly, changing his tactics,

:59:59. > :00:02.he forced his man backwards, engaged and accommodated him in his type of

:00:03. > :00:07.contest, he took the second round across the board, how will be judges

:00:08. > :00:11.score this final round? It was on a knife edge after two rounds.

:00:12. > :00:17.Vladimir Nikitin keeps coming forward, but Michael Conlan is

:00:18. > :00:21.scoring with the better shots again. You heard the crowd at the end,

:00:22. > :00:26.everyone's reaction showed that Michael Conlan has won the contest,

:00:27. > :00:32.he certainly won the last round, and the first round scores are the big

:00:33. > :00:40.problem. But I hope justice is done, because Michael Conlan deserves to

:00:41. > :00:45.win. Nervous moments now for both of the boxers. Who is going through to

:00:46. > :01:00.the medal podium? The winner, died unanimous decision, ...

:01:01. > :01:02.The winner by unanimous decision, in the blue corner.

:01:03. > :01:07.Michael Conlan's Olympic dream has been extinguished

:01:08. > :01:09.at the quarterfinals stage of the men's 56 kilograms

:01:10. > :01:18.He has declared a unanimous loser against

:01:19. > :01:20.Vladimir Nikitin, the tournament number eight seed and World

:01:21. > :01:22.Championship silver medallist in 2013, who was given the first

:01:23. > :01:24.round unanimously and given the third round unanimously

:01:25. > :01:27.after Michael Connor produced a brilliant boxing display,

:01:28. > :01:29.full of intelligence and courage, changing his tactics

:01:30. > :01:31.and Vladimir Nikitin is through to the semifinals

:01:32. > :01:37.Michael Conlan, the number one seed and reigning

:01:38. > :01:39.World Championship gold medallist, reigning European Championship

:01:40. > :01:49.and Commonwealth champion, eliminated, leaving the Rio 2016

:01:50. > :01:51.with no championship hardware and some judging that

:01:52. > :02:16.I can just imagine the emotions you are going through. How do you feel?

:02:17. > :02:28.I feel like I have been cheated. My dream has been shattered.

:02:29. > :02:35.One of the most corrupt companies in the world. We can understand how

:02:36. > :02:40.distraught you are a. In the first round, did you get information you

:02:41. > :02:48.have lost it on the scorecard? Guess I got confirmation. In the

:02:49. > :02:52.first-round I was like, this is so easy. I was not even out of breath.

:02:53. > :03:03.I thought I could win this easy. I had a bit of water, hold back the

:03:04. > :03:07.next round. But it is what it is, I have been robbed of my Olympic

:03:08. > :03:11.dream. I have been robbed by a bunch of cheaters, so it does not matter.

:03:12. > :03:19.Al have to let you go. Some very strong views, his own, his

:03:20. > :03:24.views of the governing company. You have been digesting these comments,

:03:25. > :03:30.John Inverdale. There have been strong reaction. There was complete

:03:31. > :03:35.amazement in the auditorium at the decision that I don't think anyone

:03:36. > :03:44.could understand. He said he was robbed cheated. But it was a very

:03:45. > :03:48.strange call. And unanimous. I think he was robbed. He boxed particularly

:03:49. > :03:53.well in the opening round, and he chose the tactics to hit his

:03:54. > :03:56.opponent, stay on the outside and not get hit. He is against a strong

:03:57. > :04:02.Russian opponent coming forward on the front foot, so you do not want a

:04:03. > :04:05.box to his style of boxing. In the second round, because it was across

:04:06. > :04:10.the board that he had got beaten in the first round, he had to change

:04:11. > :04:13.his tactics. He said it got back to him that he was behind, so he

:04:14. > :04:17.demonstrated that he could stand on trade with his opponent. I thought

:04:18. > :04:21.he did enough to win the second round. In the third round, he sealed

:04:22. > :04:27.it, and I thought it was a great display. He has clearly won the

:04:28. > :04:32.contest, and it goes against. Olympic boxing, it is not amateur

:04:33. > :04:37.boxing these days, but the guys on this stage, this is their moment

:04:38. > :04:40.once every four years, and also for the sport it is a key moment every

:04:41. > :04:45.four years, when people see it who do not otherwise see it. A lot of

:04:46. > :04:53.the people will have see it and thought it was crooked. It as a

:04:54. > :04:56.springboard for the fighters and a showcase for the sport. There is not

:04:57. > :04:58.a lot of amateur boxing on the television between the Olympics.

:04:59. > :05:01.What we have seen here today and last night in the heavyweight final,

:05:02. > :05:05.with another Russian was gifted a decision that was far worse than

:05:06. > :05:14.Michael Conlan's. If you have watched it, you may be amazed. Last

:05:15. > :05:20.night people stayed behind booing for 20 minutes. Every four years it

:05:21. > :05:24.seems that there are one or two or three contests that are stinkers. We

:05:25. > :05:31.do not get more than that. You can get carried away slightly, because

:05:32. > :05:37.what happened to Michael Conlan was heartbreaking and wrong, and last

:05:38. > :05:41.night it was equally heartbreaking and wrong, but there is a degree of

:05:42. > :05:49.context. You will maybe see another one of these in this competition.

:05:50. > :05:52.The three men who voted last night and the three men who voted for

:05:53. > :05:57.Michael Conlan today, we know who they are because they give us the

:05:58. > :06:02.sheets. They are not heading, they are not secret, we know who they

:06:03. > :06:08.are. Those six men will not work again at these Olympics, that is a

:06:09. > :06:14.fact. What does this do for boxing? You want to promote this in such a

:06:15. > :06:19.big way, and let's hope Nicola Adams wins a gold medal, but actually the

:06:20. > :06:23.headlines, if we're not careful for boxing, could be made by this

:06:24. > :06:28.extraordinary decision. How was it possible for three judges to see a

:06:29. > :06:33.fight totally differently to anybody else? For every contest there are

:06:34. > :06:37.five judges at the start, but then three are randomly picked and they

:06:38. > :06:40.stick with the scores throughout. The five still judge the fight, but

:06:41. > :06:49.the three do not know what they are going to be picked. Then they stick

:06:50. > :06:53.with the judges. With this system of scoring, I like to think you can

:06:54. > :06:59.award points for people on the back foot showing good defensive skills,

:07:00. > :07:04.but with the other scoring system we had with the computer scoring, they

:07:05. > :07:09.had to press a button when they saw a punch landed. So with the 10-9

:07:10. > :07:15.system, the judge can have a look and professor style of boxing or

:07:16. > :07:18.whatever but my argument is that Michael Conlan showed that he can

:07:19. > :07:24.box on the back foot, so he is pleasing that judge, then in the

:07:25. > :07:28.second round he did something else, and he still did not get it, so that

:07:29. > :07:35.is a poor decision by the judges because he showed that he could box

:07:36. > :07:38.in both styles. We just highlighted something, after 36 years we have

:07:39. > :07:43.changed from computer scoring, one man or woman pushing a button, to

:07:44. > :07:48.one man or women making a judgment. The scoring has changed in the last

:07:49. > :07:55.three years. Perhaps the judges were confused underworld had as the

:07:56. > :08:00.people here are watching on TV. The net result is that Ireland will go

:08:01. > :08:05.home without a single boxing medal, which is a monumental blow.

:08:06. > :08:09.They had so many big corpse. It is not the first debate about the

:08:10. > :08:16.officiating today. Because I open water swim called the officiating in

:08:17. > :08:24.his ten kilometre race a joke, as he was disqualified 200 metres from the

:08:25. > :08:28.finish line. Shirley Robertson is now out there because it is a great

:08:29. > :08:39.day for Great Britain, and in particular Giles Scott. This is

:08:40. > :08:53.effectively a lap of honour for the finn racer. Yes, we have four days.

:08:54. > :08:56.-- we have four races today because of the storms from the other day.

:08:57. > :09:06.Annelise Murphy has just won a medal. That is for the Irish fans.

:09:07. > :09:11.Giles Scott is next up, and he did so well in the preliminary rounds

:09:12. > :09:21.that he has already won the gold medal, and he will probably still

:09:22. > :09:26.win a lap of honour and receive his gold medal today. Over the other

:09:27. > :09:30.side of the bay, our silver medallists from London, Hannah Mills

:09:31. > :09:36.and Saskia Clark, are pulling ahead and consolidating on the gold medal

:09:37. > :09:43.position. There is a chance they will secure a medal, perhaps called,

:09:44. > :09:49.by the end of today. In terms of the finn, it completes a long line of

:09:50. > :09:53.success going back to Sydney. Yes, Britain has absolutely dominated the

:09:54. > :09:57.men's single-handed heavyweight class. Iain Percy in Sydney, then

:09:58. > :10:05.the long run of Ben Ainslie, and now Giles Scott picking up. It is very

:10:06. > :10:11.impressive. It as a society -- it is a sign of creating good great

:10:12. > :10:19.sailors, but also the technology and the depth within the UK in that

:10:20. > :10:24.class. Great to see. I'm sure there will be a lot to celebrate. Thank

:10:25. > :10:27.you for bringing us better news for Ireland, with the silver medal for

:10:28. > :10:31.Annelise Murphy. We will see you again soon with hopefully even

:10:32. > :10:33.better news. We will round up the headlines before we leave you. These

:10:34. > :10:43.are they. Nicola Adams is back on the medal

:10:44. > :10:47.trail, and she has already secured at least bronze after a hard-fought

:10:48. > :10:54.victory to reach the flyweight semifinals today. Jack Burnell was

:10:55. > :10:58.left fuming after being disqualified from the men's open water swimming.

:10:59. > :11:03.In a frantic finish, Britain became the fifth before being demoted.

:11:04. > :11:09.America's Christian Taylor has won back-to-back Olympic titles in the

:11:10. > :11:14.triple jump after recording the longest jump of the year. It is the

:11:15. > :11:16.first time in 40 years he has beat his rivals.

:11:17. > :11:25.Usain Bolt continues his bid for the unprecedented treble treble of gold

:11:26. > :11:30.medals. He cruises through to the semifinals of the 200 metres. And

:11:31. > :11:34.Laura Trott remains on course to remain in the first British woman to

:11:35. > :11:38.win four Olympic gold medals. She leads the way in the Omni after four

:11:39. > :11:43.events, with a final two to come this evening at around about 9pm

:11:44. > :11:48.your time. That is the situation. We're just about to hop to BBC Two

:11:49. > :11:52.right now for continued coverage of Day 11. We have three more

:11:53. > :11:57.gymnastics finals. The apparatus finals, the last three, to watch

:11:58. > :11:59.over there. It is the last evening in the velodrome. Get on your bike

:12:00. > :12:03.and join us there. to try to win their contestants

:12:04. > :12:20.pots of cash.
