:00:46. > :00:56.Good evening. It is a beautiful afternoon with us here in Rio on day
:00:57. > :01:00.11 of the 28th Olympic Games. There is a full programme of track and
:01:01. > :01:06.field and in the velodrome, with more British medals definitely in
:01:07. > :01:12.the pipeline on what is the last in the velodrome. It is hard to believe
:01:13. > :01:15.it is almost over there, and in the artistic gymnastics, the final three
:01:16. > :01:21.apparatus finals are about to get under way. Simone Biles' drive for
:01:22. > :01:25.five is no longer going to be possible, she tripped up on the
:01:26. > :01:28.balance beam, and she still has a chance for four gold medals, which
:01:29. > :01:34.would be a wonderful achievement and would equal the most ever won in a
:01:35. > :01:39.single Olympic Games by a gymnast, certainly a female gymnast. It is
:01:40. > :01:44.the men's parallel bars first, Matt Baker is ready. China in the thick
:01:45. > :01:49.of this to go three in a row. Absolutely. This is the penultimate
:01:50. > :02:00.final for the men. We will have the women's floor at
:02:01. > :02:05.6:45pm, and then the high bar at 7:30pm on BBC One. These are the top
:02:06. > :02:14.eight gymnasts from qualification on the parallel bars. Danell Leyva is
:02:15. > :02:17.the first to go. What a line-up we have got, five world medallists,
:02:18. > :02:27.three of them have been world champions. 0.2 separating four of
:02:28. > :02:31.them. Oleg Verniaiev is a top qualifier, in with a shout. He has
:02:32. > :02:39.been consistently scoring over 16 this year. He is the favourite.
:02:40. > :02:44.There are 80 guys in there with higher stock values, so it will be
:02:45. > :02:49.interesting. It is one of your favourite pieces of apparatus. What
:02:50. > :02:54.makes the perfect routine? A good combination of skills under the bar
:02:55. > :02:58.and above the bar and a stuck dismount. Judges will be looking for
:02:59. > :03:03.hand placement and any flicker of the legs. Hazel talked about the
:03:04. > :03:10.Chinese on this piece of apparatus, they are renowned for this. They
:03:11. > :03:14.are. Three qualified for the final today, but there are only two per
:03:15. > :03:22.country, so one guy has had to drop out. But they are the strongest in
:03:23. > :03:31.the Olympics. You Hao is world champion from 2015 and his team-mate
:03:32. > :03:41.Deng Shudi got a bronze. But Danell Leyva is one of three gymnasts who
:03:42. > :03:44.has a similar skill set. Often those who are good on parallel bars are
:03:45. > :03:51.good on high bar, but you have to control it much more. It is a more
:03:52. > :03:56.controlled piece of apparatus. Danell Leyva with his stepfather,
:03:57. > :04:01.his coach, very charismatic. They are a great combination. Let begin
:04:02. > :04:10.the parallel bar Olympic final with Danell Leyva, the world champion
:04:11. > :04:17.back in 2011. Danell Leyva came into the American team as the reserve,
:04:18. > :04:25.replacing the injured gymnast. A lovely full turn. He held that very
:04:26. > :04:33.nicely on the one rail. Another beautiful full turn. The under swing
:04:34. > :04:38.work there to be seen. Really nice, the only person in the world to be
:04:39. > :04:44.doing that. He uses a lot of under bar work, which is why he is so good
:04:45. > :04:53.on the high bar as well. The above bar element. A big double front to
:04:54. > :04:58.stick. What a way to start the final. A little moment in the middle
:04:59. > :05:04.where he went for a wonder, that he contained it. People but back with
:05:05. > :05:16.the dismount. He has scored a 15.6 whilst here. It will be high 15th.
:05:17. > :05:21.-- a high 15 that will medal. It is a high start value as well. He could
:05:22. > :05:28.not have done it much better. What a way to get this final under way. In
:05:29. > :05:34.some ways it is quite nice going at the beginning. The pressure has not
:05:35. > :05:36.racked up through the apparatus. If you are nearer the end, when
:05:37. > :05:43.everybody has gone clean and you know you have to be perfect... That
:05:44. > :05:49.was efficient. Those who have been following the gymnastics here, you
:05:50. > :05:52.will know to keep your eye on the difficulty score. Gymnasts can get
:05:53. > :05:57.extra marks by doing harder routines. Keep your eye on that.
:05:58. > :06:11.Watch it billed as we go through the competition. An enormous 15.9. That
:06:12. > :06:17.will be a very strong benchmark. Definitely. There are three or four
:06:18. > :06:24.other guys who can score near that mark. It will be a close call to see
:06:25. > :06:32.who gets in the medals. The second gymnast, of the top eight
:06:33. > :06:38.qualifiers, Andrei Muntean, one of two Romanians here on the men's
:06:39. > :06:44.side. They did not qualify with the team, a great surprise. But the job
:06:45. > :06:53.on parallel bars is down to this man, his team-mate just missed out.
:06:54. > :07:02.He starts nice and smooth. The ability to show a good handstand is
:07:03. > :07:11.so important. Yes, you need to keep your composure. Shows you have a
:07:12. > :07:21.strong core. He held it for more than enough. It goes up a grade when
:07:22. > :07:28.you do it from the one bar. Moving nicely to the end. Huge from one end
:07:29. > :07:49.to the other. Really classy work. The double pike
:07:50. > :07:56.backwards. A small jump. Two down, what a final. You can see he is
:07:57. > :08:01.absolutely thrilled with that. These gymnasts have had to wait a long
:08:02. > :08:05.time, we are day 11, they qualified on day one. You can imagine the
:08:06. > :08:15.anticipation and anxiety that has built up. Waiting to perform today.
:08:16. > :08:23.Absolutely thrilled. He just worked so hard to control it. The full turn
:08:24. > :08:26.out. These are the bits that have made parallel bars so exciting over
:08:27. > :08:31.the last few years, the swinging elements. It is moving from one end
:08:32. > :08:35.to the other and they are graded really high. You will see gymnasts
:08:36. > :08:40.doing this to increase the difficulty score. You would not
:08:41. > :08:43.believe the momentum and the downward force you experience as you
:08:44. > :08:49.dropping from handstand down and through. It is quite easy in the
:08:50. > :08:55.early stages to come off. Yes, a lot of the gymnasts will coat the bars
:08:56. > :09:03.in sugar water or honey to add a bit of extra grip to make sure they
:09:04. > :09:10.don't fly off. The top score is still Danell Leyva, 15.9. This
:09:11. > :09:22.gymnast has scored a 15.966 whilst here. 7.2 difficulty in the
:09:23. > :09:29.all-around competition. It is Deng Shudi. He got a bronze of the World
:09:30. > :09:33.Championships two years ago. One of your favourite gymnasts. Yes,
:09:34. > :09:41.especially on parallel bars. So much to write a and difficulty within
:09:42. > :09:51.this routine. It is unbelievable, he can cram it all into one routine.
:09:52. > :09:57.Deng Shudi, the first of the two Chinese gymnasts in the men's
:09:58. > :10:02.parallel bars Olympic final, 24 years old, the third highest
:10:03. > :10:07.qualifier. China so dominant on this apparatus in the team competition.
:10:08. > :10:16.But they have not had a happy finals. A beautiful somersault. He
:10:17. > :10:22.needs to hit every element here. Explain that. That was a double
:10:23. > :10:28.somersault from the long swing, with a half turn. Very unique. It is
:10:29. > :10:33.worth so much to add to the difficulty score. Slightly
:10:34. > :10:38.off-balance, managed to save it. With not much deduction, actually.
:10:39. > :10:47.Another huge double pike between the bars. Again, a big movement from one
:10:48. > :11:10.end to the other. Double pike kick out. He tried to
:11:11. > :11:15.stick it, just a bit unlucky. Beautiful flow through the routine,
:11:16. > :11:20.the rhythm was just sublime. Just the unfortunate error in the middle,
:11:21. > :11:24.off to one side. He pulled it back in, but there will be some
:11:25. > :11:31.deductions. The highest difficulty score so far was Danell Leyva with
:11:32. > :11:39.6.9. In qualification he went 47.2. Is that likely to be up? It was
:11:40. > :11:44.relatively similar. It is hard to go much higher than 7.2, only one
:11:45. > :11:49.gymnast in this final has a higher start value. These somersaults, the
:11:50. > :11:55.kicks out so well. Look at the dismount. Could have lifted the
:11:56. > :11:59.chest a bit higher so he did not need the hop backwards, but there is
:12:00. > :12:07.no keeping hold of the legs and squeezing it in until you meet the
:12:08. > :12:08.floor. Beautiful work. Tenth of a mark will separate the medallists in
:12:09. > :12:22.this Olympic final. Not enough to go ahead of Danell
:12:23. > :12:29.Leyva. That was a costly wobble on the bar. I think it was around 0.3,
:12:30. > :12:30.so he could have been into the 16th there, which would have taken him
:12:31. > :12:47.into the lead. His team-mate, You Hao, is next to
:12:48. > :12:52.go. Some of them have different liquids they like to put on the
:12:53. > :12:59.bars. To make sure it is absolutely to their liking. Some bring
:13:00. > :13:04.sandpaper, a bit of honey and water. You Hao just preparing the bars
:13:05. > :13:09.exactly as he would like them. They are quite springy. They have some
:13:10. > :13:20.movement, so you can get the bounce and height. Interestingly, at the
:13:21. > :13:25.start of qualification a cute gymnasts were having problems with
:13:26. > :13:32.the bars, but over time, they are to their liking now. You Hao, fifth
:13:33. > :13:41.highest qualifier, but he has scored 16.166. He is the gymnast with the
:13:42. > :13:48.highest difficulty score. So tidy and tight. 7.4, his difficulty in
:13:49. > :13:56.qualifying. If he can be clean, he should be able to score the most.
:13:57. > :14:00.Really nice start. A really unique skill that both Chinese gymnasts
:14:01. > :14:09.have performed. Adding to the start value. Really nice combination of
:14:10. > :14:17.under bar work. Long swing, double pike. Just settling in the
:14:18. > :14:23.handstand. Moving from one into the other. Having a little rest,
:14:24. > :14:30.preparing for the last third of the routine. His legs might have touched
:14:31. > :14:44.the bars then. There will be a deduction. Not sure how much.
:14:45. > :15:00.Maybe his mind was on the fact that his feet had touched the bars, and
:15:01. > :15:07.put too much into the dismount. Yes, that would have been on his mind and
:15:08. > :15:10.maybe lost concentration. That has been a big story of the Chinese in
:15:11. > :15:17.these finals, especially the men, because they have come in with the
:15:18. > :15:21.big difficulty scores, but have not seemed to be able to hold their
:15:22. > :15:30.nerve to perform. We were saying that on the rings yesterday. A
:15:31. > :15:38.really big surprise, because this is so much work. In qualification he
:15:39. > :15:46.had room for some errors. But he has fallen at the end, so it will be too
:15:47. > :15:55.costly. And that is one hallmark deduction. So when you see the
:15:56. > :16:07.execution score, he was law. You heard people gasping. I don't think
:16:08. > :16:10.anyone could believe it. 14.833. The current world champion. What a huge
:16:11. > :16:19.disappointment. Danell Leyva leads the final on a score of 15.9. David
:16:20. > :16:34.Belyavskiy is next to go. Belyavskiy has become another of the
:16:35. > :16:42.favourites at the European Championships, and is the current
:16:43. > :16:48.European champion. His highest score here is 59.33, and he has done it
:16:49. > :16:56.twice. So he has the potential to challenge for the top spot. Nice
:16:57. > :17:04.control on the opening. That was an unusual combination. Yes, really
:17:05. > :17:11.decorative. I tried to learn it, and I couldn't get it in training. He is
:17:12. > :17:36.such a tidy gymnast on the parallel bars.
:17:37. > :17:46.It was a completely different pace. Surely he has landed on a medal? I
:17:47. > :17:52.think so. He has consistently had 59 and 60, and that was a brilliant
:17:53. > :17:55.performance. It was indeed, and we showed how to perform the dismount
:17:56. > :18:03.properly. He also landed deeply. I think it is difficult to get the
:18:04. > :18:12.height of the parallel bars for this dismount. Like you say it was very
:18:13. > :18:15.zippy. A little hesitation but he swings like on the high buyer. He
:18:16. > :18:20.has been an impressive gymnast. We saw Hamas and youngster to be
:18:21. > :18:30.consistent, but this year he found his feet. And his landings. I hope
:18:31. > :18:33.that he can get into the medals. The score to beat is 59. Three gymnasts
:18:34. > :18:49.left to go. It is amazing how going early like
:18:50. > :19:01.Danell Leyva did, and giving a really confident performance...
:19:02. > :19:05.15.783. The jump and the landing is where he has lost it to Danell
:19:06. > :19:21.Leyva. There is the confirmation as it stands. 15.9 leads.
:19:22. > :19:32.Deng Shudi holding onto the bronze medal position at the moment. Here
:19:33. > :19:36.comes the World champion. He is also two time European champion. A silver
:19:37. > :19:42.medal in the all-round competition on the first day in the individual
:19:43. > :19:56.finals. Here's the highest qualifier, with a score of 16.166.
:19:57. > :20:05.He pushed so hard in the all-around competition. He would dearly love to
:20:06. > :20:06.make this his gold. Just a little softness in his back, very
:20:07. > :20:13.uncharacteristic. A big arch, looks like he is
:20:14. > :20:28.nervous. Huge flight above the bar is moving
:20:29. > :20:53.to the other end. He might have just pulled it back.
:20:54. > :21:01.Very uncharacteristic with the back arches. Really. He is usually so
:21:02. > :21:07.tight and controlled. He has been the best in the world parallel bars
:21:08. > :21:11.for the last three or for years. He has looked supremely confident but
:21:12. > :21:18.it just shows you that there is nothing like the pressure in the
:21:19. > :21:22.Olympic final. He posted a 7.2 difficulty in qualification. He
:21:23. > :21:29.needs all the difficulty he can get here. He does. When he goes through
:21:30. > :21:35.perfectly scores 16.1 or 16 to, but he has lost a few tenths with the
:21:36. > :21:39.hand placements. It will be a close call that he get to -- to see
:21:40. > :21:58.whether he can get above Danell Leyva. What do you reckon? 15.8 or
:21:59. > :22:13.15.9. Well, the scores are in, and it is 16.041. It is huge. He leads
:22:14. > :22:20.ahead of Danell Leyva. Belyavskiy is at the moment in third position.
:22:21. > :22:29.Well. A few more tenths than you were expecting. Yes, with the back
:22:30. > :22:35.arches, you can give 1p or three tenths, and they have decided on one
:22:36. > :22:39.tenth. They probably would only be one tenth, but under the scrutiny of
:22:40. > :22:47.this perfect work, you think it is a big mistake. That is the decision of
:22:48. > :22:57.judge. -- one tenth. They decided 0.1 of those little arch positions.
:22:58. > :23:02.I have to say, firmly he is the best parallel bar worker in the world.
:23:03. > :23:08.And when you have given performance like that consistently, that is what
:23:09. > :23:21.is expected. 16.041 is now the score to beat for gold. No three from
:23:22. > :23:26.Cuba. Usually capable of this. We have seen him fight for position in
:23:27. > :23:33.the all-round. He had to withdraw because of a foot injury. This is
:23:34. > :23:38.very good work indeed. Looked like a slightly misplaced his hand with a
:23:39. > :23:45.half turn. He managed to save it, but not without breaking form.
:23:46. > :24:13.A big mistake in the middle. But a demonstration of the power he has
:24:14. > :24:21.got. Years in the high bar final very shortly, coming up at 7:30pm on
:24:22. > :24:24.BBC One. But what a shame. I love the dismount. It is difficult to
:24:25. > :24:30.generate the height on the parallel bars, but he was high. Yes, he is a
:24:31. > :24:36.powerful gymnast so he can get so much hyped. There is the mistake,
:24:37. > :24:43.quite costly. That may be enough to put him out of the medals. That will
:24:44. > :24:53.probably be 0.3 at least. Maybe even 0.5. That is deducted from the ten
:24:54. > :25:03.marks the execution. But won't match off for the dismount. -- there will
:25:04. > :25:26.not be much of for the dismount. The scores are in.
:25:27. > :25:47.So, the last gymnast to go, Ryohei Kato, he got a bronze medal at the
:25:48. > :25:52.Championships -- World Championships in 2015. He has had two 15.5 scores,
:25:53. > :25:58.one of them was in the team final, that got Japan the gold. It is
:25:59. > :26:03.interesting how many different countries are in these team finals.
:26:04. > :26:12.JoAnn won the team gold, but have not dominated at all. In fact, they
:26:13. > :26:21.have had just one medal. It is interesting that other countries are
:26:22. > :26:29.penetrating. -- Japan won the team gold. When the difficulty is there,
:26:30. > :26:34.you cannot ignore that, you have to add it to the execution, which is
:26:35. > :26:40.how you get these scores, which has helped Great Britain. Yes, and I
:26:41. > :26:44.think with the Japanese men, the start scores are low compared to the
:26:45. > :26:48.other gymnasts. Ryohei Kato performed a 6.6 in qualifications,
:26:49. > :26:58.which is a lot lower than some in this final. But his work is clean. A
:26:59. > :27:06.little tiny arch of the back. Super on the somersaults. But he leaves
:27:07. > :27:17.himself having to perform almost faultlessly to compete. Because his
:27:18. > :27:21.start score is lower, he has two performance will clean. A little bit
:27:22. > :27:30.shaky. It will not be as high as in qualifications.
:27:31. > :27:46.Nice struggle front somersault. -- straddle.
:27:47. > :27:55.He's trying to push Belyavskiy out of the medals. He does not hit the
:27:56. > :27:59.dead straight handstand lying like the other gymnasts. It was amazing
:28:00. > :28:11.how many of them felt the pressure on the easy elements. I'm sure he
:28:12. > :28:17.did a double pike dismount... Of course we are talking about star
:28:18. > :28:19.Value. That is your ten most difficult moods added together,
:28:20. > :28:27.including the dismount, to give you the amount of difficulty in the
:28:28. > :28:35.routine. -- difficult moves. The difficulty in qualification was 6.6.
:28:36. > :28:41.He may have increased that a bit. I do not think it is going to
:28:42. > :28:55.challenge for first place. No, it doesn't. He finishes seventh, with a
:28:56. > :29:08.score of 15.233. So warlike than I ever is the Olympic champion. --
:29:09. > :29:21.Verniaiev. HAZEL IRVINE:. I think we are all
:29:22. > :29:27.delighted for Verniaiev. It is gold. It was called four years ago, at
:29:28. > :29:31.Greenwich Park. Do you remember the quartet who took the equestrian gold
:29:32. > :29:35.in that dramatic jump off against the Netherlands? The first
:29:36. > :29:41.show-jumping gold for Great Britain in 60 years, and it was celebrated
:29:42. > :29:47.hard after that. Well, two of that team, Ben Maher and Nick Skelton are
:29:48. > :29:52.back for the team. Nick Skelton brings back the only returning horse
:29:53. > :29:59.from London 2012. He got the Whitaker brothers this time, John,
:30:00. > :30:04.61 and Michael, 56. They have got experience on their side. Let us see
:30:05. > :30:11.if it counts. A very big day in defence of their team title.
:30:12. > :30:22.This the first of two legs of team show-jumping. The top teams from
:30:23. > :30:27.this round go forward to the second and medal winning ground tomorrow.
:30:28. > :30:36.The man and horse who help Britain to team gold in London, now 58,
:30:37. > :30:45.Nick, with Big Star, the first to go to Great Britain.
:30:46. > :30:57.Big Star showing his class down the combination, the ultimate athlete.
:30:58. > :30:59.13 years old now. Nick moving around the corner, he does not want to get
:31:00. > :31:22.time faults. Big Star moving around these
:31:23. > :31:35.corners, he is well on target to be inside the time.
:31:36. > :31:44.You can do it. He is inside the time. What a round. They have given
:31:45. > :31:50.him four. I think it was for the water. Did he just dropped one back?
:31:51. > :31:57.That is desperately close, I cannot believe he has been given that. It
:31:58. > :32:03.looks a bit controversial. Now, the Americans. A strong team. One of the
:32:04. > :32:10.best in the world, to get them under way, Kent Farrington. One of those
:32:11. > :32:23.incredibly scooped the forces that likes to gallop around big arenas.
:32:24. > :32:28.Effortless down the combination. So far we have not seen any rider that
:32:29. > :32:34.has jumped clear from the first leg that has gone clear in this leg.
:32:35. > :32:37.Maybe he will be the first one. He is attacking this cause, we saw Nick
:32:38. > :32:47.Skelton flying around, well inside the time.
:32:48. > :33:02.An interesting time check, coming round to fence 11. Well under 70
:33:03. > :33:08.seconds here. Coming in on quite a steep angle. A lot of confidence, he
:33:09. > :33:17.is well inside the time. A great round. The Americans get off to a
:33:18. > :33:27.flyer. They are one of the fancied teams for a gold medal. The
:33:28. > :33:32.Brazilian needs to get around, his score will count, he does not want a
:33:33. > :33:44.big one, because then the Brazilians would not get through.
:33:45. > :34:00.He jumped clear with his gorgeous stallion in the first leg.
:34:01. > :34:01.Interestingly, it is a Dutch stallion, but extensively used in
:34:02. > :34:09.France. This is a pressure round. In front
:34:10. > :34:34.of his home crowd. He drops the shoulders, cuts and
:34:35. > :34:40.tight round the corner. Does not want a time fault. What he does not
:34:41. > :34:46.want is three fences down. It is not going to happen. It would put them
:34:47. > :34:53.out, which would be so disappointing. He has done a great
:34:54. > :34:56.job. Based in Europe, great on the international circuit, and he has
:34:57. > :35:05.put all of that skill to the test. He has done it well. Brazil finish
:35:06. > :35:10.on a zero score. He has said the Stadium of Light. But now a crucial
:35:11. > :35:17.round for Great Britain. Could not be a better man as anchor than John
:35:18. > :35:25.Whitaker. One of the senior citizens as -- at 61, but Britain's chances
:35:26. > :35:40.of anything here very much in his great hands. I've, no. It is all
:35:41. > :35:44.over. That will be a handful of time faults, even if he can get down this
:35:45. > :35:54.combination. It looks as though she does not want to go. Extraordinary,
:35:55. > :35:59.after jumping clear yesterday. It means that he will have to try to
:36:00. > :36:04.get going, but we are going to be counting the other schools that we
:36:05. > :36:16.already have. Britain can do no better than 13th. John trying to get
:36:17. > :36:19.the horse going again. We have seen one or two horses have a funny look
:36:20. > :36:24.at that combination, it is not the biggest. But there is a filler in
:36:25. > :36:29.the middle. It is unlike Ornellaia to pull up. As you can see from
:36:30. > :36:38.John's reaction, he was not expecting it. The time faults will,
:36:39. > :36:42.as well. He will be at least eight seconds over the time. Another poll
:36:43. > :36:54.has gone, and another. He has won 21 other medals, but it
:36:55. > :36:59.does not look as though he is to win one here. Disappointment today for
:37:00. > :37:07.Great Britain. They do not qualify for the second round of the team
:37:08. > :37:12.medals. The eight that do, four on clear rounds after today's round,
:37:13. > :37:18.Germany, America, the Netherlands and Brazil. It will ensure a great
:37:19. > :37:24.atmosphere tomorrow. Canada go through with four, France with one.
:37:25. > :37:26.They are on details of the clear rounds. The others that get through,
:37:27. > :37:36.Switzerland and Sweden. Disappointing, no successful defence
:37:37. > :37:39.or medal in the team competition, but Nick Skelton, Ben Maher and
:37:40. > :37:44.Michael Whitaker go through to the individual contest. They will jump
:37:45. > :37:48.again tomorrow, to decide who goes through to the final medal round of
:37:49. > :37:53.jumping on Friday. Still chances for three of the four. If you were
:37:54. > :37:59.watching earlier, you will have seen Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge in
:38:00. > :38:03.the badminton, they have beaten the world number three and eight to get
:38:04. > :38:08.into the semifinal, but it was not to be against the fourth seeds today
:38:09. > :38:12.from China. But Chris said there wanted to do a Leicester City and
:38:13. > :38:18.win the gold medal. They still Premier League, get their reaction.
:38:19. > :38:22.Not the result you would have wanted, but you gave it your all. At
:38:23. > :38:28.some points you were playing points while you were laying on the ground.
:38:29. > :38:34.It was up and down. Some parts were very good, but cheap mistakes,
:38:35. > :38:38.against a world-class paid you cannot give them easy points. Full
:38:39. > :38:43.credit to them, they played brilliantly. There is a big drift.
:38:44. > :38:48.When they were on the slow end, they moved us around well, and when we
:38:49. > :38:54.had the wind with us, they did not lift or give us the attack. It is
:38:55. > :38:59.fresh rating. But we have one more match, we can get a medal, so we
:39:00. > :39:02.have to put this behind us have a rest, and come back the day after
:39:03. > :39:09.and give it everything for the bronze medal. How will you let
:39:10. > :39:14.yourself now? We still have so much to play for. If we finish with a
:39:15. > :39:19.bronze medal, I will still be very happy. Like Chris said, we did not
:39:20. > :39:24.quite perform how we wanted to today. I don't think if we had lost
:39:25. > :39:28.and we did not play our best we would have minded, but we had more
:39:29. > :39:32.in the tank to give today. We are looking forward to the bronze medal
:39:33. > :39:37.match, it will be nice to have a day off, come back, and try again, and
:39:38. > :39:40.it'll be nice to get the bronze medal. The first British pair to
:39:41. > :39:47.make it through to a semifinal for 12 years, what does mean? I hope it
:39:48. > :39:51.does a lot. The hardest thing we have to compete against... China, it
:39:52. > :39:57.is their second national sport behind table tennis. You think how
:39:58. > :40:02.many people are playing in China. In England or written, there are not
:40:03. > :40:05.enough people playing. They don't know what badminton is, they don't
:40:06. > :40:13.understand. I hope they get to watch it. In every small town in Great
:40:14. > :40:16.Britain, if 20 people start playing because of us, that is amazing. The
:40:17. > :40:21.more people that play, the better chance they have of being here one
:40:22. > :40:26.day. There is no reason why we can't be as good as China, we just need
:40:27. > :40:31.more people to play, and one day they could be where we are. But
:40:32. > :40:34.hopefully not losing in a semifinal. Go and get ready for your bronze
:40:35. > :40:42.medal match, people will be interested to see that on Thursday.
:40:43. > :40:47.I was reading some comments from Chris, he said he got started in
:40:48. > :40:51.badminton, his teacher was a county coach, and 20 years later he got to
:40:52. > :40:56.a semifinal at the Olympic Games and is playing for a bronze medal. He is
:40:57. > :40:59.passionate about trying to grow the sport. You have all the details
:41:00. > :41:06.online that you want to give it a go, and why not. We are going back
:41:07. > :41:09.for more gymnastics. It is the last couple of finals in the individual
:41:10. > :41:13.apparatus. Simone Biles had the drive for five, but she will settle
:41:14. > :41:26.the four on the floor. Representing the United States of
:41:27. > :41:55.America, Simone Biles! A true champion and a leader of a
:41:56. > :42:05.great team. There is gold number 24 Simone Biles. Third Olympic medal
:42:06. > :42:12.four Simone Biles. Simone Biles gets the bronze medal.
:42:13. > :42:19.She is up shortly in the final of the floor. It is her signature move.
:42:20. > :42:26.The parallel bars is the signature event of this man, Oleg Verniaiev,
:42:27. > :42:28.and what a moment, after coming second in the individual all-around.
:42:29. > :43:39.Special for him and Ukraine. Oleg Verniaiev takes gold in the
:43:40. > :43:48.men's parallel bars final, Danell Leyva get the silver. Oleg Verniaiev
:43:49. > :43:55.and Danell Leyva are in the high bar final at 7:30pm. They don't have
:43:56. > :43:56.time to get back into the training gym and get themselves warmed up for
:43:57. > :44:03.that. It could have the Max Whitlock
:44:04. > :44:08.effect for Oleg Verniaiev. He is the seventh highest qualifier, but
:44:09. > :44:15.Danell Leyva is in with a chance. He could do something. He has one of
:44:16. > :44:18.the biggest start values. After picking up a medal on the parallel
:44:19. > :44:24.bars, it could be similar to what happened with Max. He might go for
:44:25. > :44:30.it. He is finishing the competition, so there might be pressure on him.
:44:31. > :44:36.We have a wonderful session of gymnastics here. It has been a
:44:37. > :44:40.celebration of gymnastics here. We are finishing with the blue ribbon
:44:41. > :44:45.and events, the women's floor, which is just about to take place, with
:44:46. > :44:52.Amy Tinkler and Simone Biles, and then we have Nile Wilson for Great
:44:53. > :44:57.Britain in the high bar final. Also, a man hoping to retain the Olympic
:44:58. > :44:59.title that he won in London. We have got his routine from London. Took
:45:00. > :45:16.about a crowd pleaser, here we go. This routine is such a crowd
:45:17. > :45:23.pleaser. There are some any release and catch combinations. You will see
:45:24. > :45:29.it as he is winding up. Here comes the first one, and another, and then
:45:30. > :45:40.another! I have seen him in training with four in a row. That increases
:45:41. > :45:47.the difficulty again. This is the point, he has been training for four
:45:48. > :45:52.years, will he do four? I think it will be how he feels on the bar,
:45:53. > :45:57.because you have to catch them releasing patches at full stretch to
:45:58. > :46:01.get the momentum to lift you enter that. If he catches one quite close,
:46:02. > :46:08.he will not have that swing to put him into another release and catch.
:46:09. > :46:15.We were watching him in warm up, and he was having a few issues, but no
:46:16. > :46:18.doubt he has gone into the training gym and has tried to boot a great.
:46:19. > :46:37.Another gymnast trying to get it right is the German. Yes, he has so
:46:38. > :46:42.much determination and willpower to get back up there. He has had some
:46:43. > :46:44.disappointments. In 2009 he had to withdraw from the World
:46:45. > :46:58.Championships and high bar has always been his speciality. They
:46:59. > :47:07.have two score over 16. Nile Wilson is in with a shout from Great
:47:08. > :47:10.Britain. Some of the gymnasts we expect to up their difficulty, but
:47:11. > :47:14.if he sticks, he could do but Max Whitlock did on the flawed and post
:47:15. > :47:20.a very substantial score, go all out for execution and leave it to the
:47:21. > :47:25.rest of them to try to match. Yes, and if you look at his execution, it
:47:26. > :47:30.is probably the best in the final. You know that he is going to be the
:47:31. > :47:34.cleanest and tidiest on that piece of apparatus, if not the most
:47:35. > :47:37.difficult. It will be a high score, and he will put pressure on a lot of
:47:38. > :47:54.the gymnasts. Zonderland is performing secondly,
:47:55. > :47:59.then Nile Wilson. Danell Leyva will wrap it up. We will turn their
:48:00. > :48:11.attentions to the women's floor final. Everyone is waiting
:48:12. > :48:21.to see Simone Biles. Yes, she literally flies. It is incredible to
:48:22. > :48:24.see how much spring she gets. And her facial awareness for the
:48:25. > :48:30.landings. She came away with an Olympic bronze, and she will want to
:48:31. > :48:34.fight back and show people that yesterday was a bad day at the
:48:35. > :48:38.office and she is going for four Olympic titles. That will match the
:48:39. > :48:52.best ever in history. The gymnasts are coming out, led by Zonderland,
:48:53. > :48:58.then Wang Yan, who finished fifth on the vault. You can see Great
:48:59. > :49:04.Britain's Amy Tinkler in the white top. And then Simone Biles. Really,
:49:05. > :49:07.you have to keep your eye on the gymnasts in this second half of the
:49:08. > :49:20.competition, starting with Amy Tinkler. You also have Steingruber.
:49:21. > :49:24.Vanessa Ferrari was all-round champion and has never got an
:49:25. > :49:30.Olympic medal. Yes, back in London I think she might have picked up a
:49:31. > :49:36.medal on the floor actually, so we will have to see. Going up last, she
:49:37. > :49:40.has a lot to boot in, but one thing we know with her is that she can do
:49:41. > :49:51.the landings so well. That will be the difference between the medals.
:49:52. > :50:08.Simone Biles and Aly Raisman will be fighting it out for the top to.
:50:09. > :50:18.The Italian is 20 years old, just outside the medals at the European
:50:19. > :50:24.Championships. And then Great Britain's Amy Tinkler.
:50:25. > :50:33.She is the youngest athlete in Team GB.
:50:34. > :50:46.CHEERING Simone Biles is hoping for a gold medal number four. The
:50:47. > :50:56.highest qualifier. -- number four in real macro.
:50:57. > :51:04.Steingruber is the world champion. 22.
:51:05. > :51:20.The second gymnast from America in the final. Beer is the two-time
:51:21. > :51:26.European champion. All-around champion in 2006, Vanessa Ferrari.
:51:27. > :51:29.She has the third highest score as far as qualification is concerned.
:51:30. > :51:34.Beth, give us an idea of the ultimate floor routine, that will
:51:35. > :51:39.win this. What do they have to do? They have to have a maximum of five
:51:40. > :51:43.acrobatic elements, so you will be looking for the big tumbles, double
:51:44. > :51:48.somersaults with a twisting element, and they have to show at least three
:51:49. > :51:53.jumps and turns. Simone Biles will be all about the big powerful
:51:54. > :51:56.tumbles, as is Aly Raisman, and the others will not have the difficulty
:51:57. > :52:04.on the tumbles but they will make up for it with the jumps and Lex. How
:52:05. > :52:11.do you think Amy Tinkler will fit? She is in great company. In training
:52:12. > :52:15.she has been doing some jumps out of the tumbles. If they do those, it
:52:16. > :52:19.takes the deductions away from the landings, and gives it come
:52:20. > :52:28.connection value. It will be interesting to see what she can
:52:29. > :52:41.produce. -- some connection value. Now, over to the commentators.
:52:42. > :52:56.Keep your eyes open for these first couple of tumbles.
:52:57. > :53:10.And now, a completely different double straight. Full twist. Just a
:53:11. > :53:19.little step forward. That was worth a lot. A four spin. You have to have
:53:20. > :53:52.three big spins and jumps. This is very clean.
:53:53. > :54:01.This has been very efficient. We have not seen any real steps on
:54:02. > :54:15.landing. Another great finish. You can see the delight on her face.
:54:16. > :54:21.That was a very strong opening routine.
:54:22. > :54:30.Not only did she tumble tremendously, she did that unusual
:54:31. > :54:41.spin in the middle. This is the 2.5 front somersault with full turn on.
:54:42. > :54:50.Two difficult tumbles gets bonuses. Out of that spin, it was
:54:51. > :54:52.choreographed, I'm sure, but could look a little unsteady. That was the
:54:53. > :55:12.only time the routine even faltered. STUDIO: her best score here is
:55:13. > :55:20.14.566. She did try a difficulty of 6.4 in the all-round competition.
:55:21. > :55:24.These are this button is. That will increase difficulty level. This is
:55:25. > :55:29.the big challenge, to perform not the tumbles, which most of them do
:55:30. > :55:38.quite often in training, but to do the other bits really consistently
:55:39. > :55:57.as well. Simone Biles is keeping limbered up.
:55:58. > :56:02.Japan are looking strong, already investing a lot in the team that
:56:03. > :56:15.will take them to their home Olympics in 2020. Especially the
:56:16. > :56:26.women, they have hugely improved. The crowd are getting impatient.
:56:27. > :56:30.Wang Yan has had a long wait. This button on the floor looked as if she
:56:31. > :56:43.had fallen a little bit out of it. She was given a 6.3 per difficulty,
:56:44. > :56:59.so let's get on with the second gymnast, Wang Yan. Her best score so
:57:00. > :57:44.far is 14.9. 14.533 is the score to beat.
:57:45. > :57:59.She cleverly disguises the landing. She shows the full turn that has to
:58:00. > :58:08.be in this routine. Third tumble, using a 2.5 twist.
:58:09. > :58:18.Genaro has time to sell the team to the judges. -- she now has time.
:58:19. > :58:32.Deletes are just as important as the tumbles, building up the difficulty.
:58:33. > :58:49.Two jumps have to be shown connected together. This is the final tumble.
:58:50. > :58:56.A great routine. Wang Yan with a strong bid for a medal.
:58:57. > :59:01.HAZEL IRVINE: good evening if you're joining us on BBC One. This the
:59:02. > :59:06.final of the women's floor, the last event in the women's gymnastics
:59:07. > :59:12.programme. We have just been watching Wang Yan, the second
:59:13. > :59:14.gymnast of six. For viewers on BBC Two, it is again time to switch over
:59:15. > :59:19.to BBC One for continued Hello there.
:59:20. > :59:21.1970s Michael Fish here. Can you believe I ever looked
:59:22. > :59:25.this hot? Speaking of heat,
