:00:00. > :00:18.COMMENTATOR: The player not allowed in the front court but is everywhere

:00:19. > :00:35.normally, he is ubiquitous. That is a key position libero. Italy had a

:00:36. > :00:41.win in straight sets of this event in the London competition four years

:00:42. > :00:45.ago, battering the United States and played the Brazilians in the semi

:00:46. > :00:47.and were beaten in that. They went on to win the bronze medal match

:00:48. > :00:59.against Bulgaria. The Iranians get us under way in the

:01:00. > :01:17.quarterfinal match in Rio. A semifinal place is on offer. Another

:01:18. > :01:29.good serve. Always looks severe bomber but this man is a demon from

:01:30. > :01:34.the baseline. The Italians have a chance to attack. We will see a lot

:01:35. > :01:40.more of that from the player with Russian roots, very much wearing the

:01:41. > :01:45.colours of Italy now. He is a passionate character. He is an

:01:46. > :02:07.aggressive character, and they need that.

:02:08. > :02:25.That adds to his tally, 28 spike of the competition.

:02:26. > :02:32.And the opportunities spilled out of the hands. They kept it going. Good,

:02:33. > :02:38.strong rally early on, and into the net. Italy score. Zaytsev read that.

:02:39. > :02:42.It was a desperate move in a sense, because he was the only one on that

:02:43. > :02:56.side of the net and had to move to his right. And the chance goes for

:02:57. > :02:58.Iran. Ebadipour comes to the back, and that is him. What a piece of

:02:59. > :03:18.receiving. Iran have the serve. That is critical, to maintain the

:03:19. > :03:21.service of vantage. It was a good score, all about that split-second

:03:22. > :03:33.decision-making. Iran have kept it going. Finally, the finish.

:03:34. > :04:00.Brilliant defence from Iran. But not for long.

:04:01. > :04:05.Birarelli has missed the game and a bit, so we will let him off. He

:04:06. > :04:09.missed the game against Mexico and suck out the game. Actually, he was

:04:10. > :04:21.ready to go, but never came on against Canada.

:04:22. > :04:27.That is a formidable spiking technique Zaytsev has. Great reach

:04:28. > :04:37.and break power in the follow-through. When he came on

:04:38. > :04:46.against Canada in the last match, it was a different game altogether.

:04:47. > :04:59.There is something of the streetfighter about Zaytsev. Lovely

:05:00. > :05:04.celebration. In a sense, a dream team. They feel, having been the top

:05:05. > :05:13.team in their group, they want to build this now. That is the blocking

:05:14. > :05:17.machine. Zaytsev, and a thumping serve. Too much on it. That is

:05:18. > :05:21.always the danger when you go for that power serve rather than the

:05:22. > :05:28.floater. You have got to judge it to perfection. Even players the quality

:05:29. > :05:36.of Zaytsev get it wrong. Even stevens early on here. Cheap point

:05:37. > :05:54.given up straightaway. Iran offering the serve back to Italy.

:05:55. > :06:09.A series of missed cues here by Italy.

:06:10. > :06:20.The captain is so precise, never hurried. Juantorena knew exactly

:06:21. > :06:30.where that was going. Cross court, in the corner. No way anyone was

:06:31. > :06:33.going to get near that. Monday but perfectly, Juantorena. If you

:06:34. > :06:40.recognise the name, it is not surprising. His uncle was a famous

:06:41. > :07:01.Cuban. Iran response right away. That is a costly rotation. He may

:07:02. > :07:09.kiss the ball, but he has kissed the point goodbye. Service faults being

:07:10. > :07:20.traded in this opening set, getting off to the best possible start is so

:07:21. > :07:26.important. Straight into the net again. In terms of it going over,

:07:27. > :07:36.not even close. This is cheap from Italy. It goes back to the old word

:07:37. > :07:46.that is familiar in volleyball, momentum. Keep it going. Nothing

:07:47. > :07:59.builds confidence like winning. Italy are into the lead once more.

:08:00. > :08:02.But no opportunity to build daylight between themselves and the Iran for

:08:03. > :08:14.the heavily fancied Italians. Receive, set, Spike. All done so

:08:15. > :08:55.quickly. Marouf is the smallest man on the

:08:56. > :09:01.court. The Italian serving is misfiring here. Already, that is

:09:02. > :09:08.five service faults from the Italians. That is half of the

:09:09. > :09:24.Iranian tally. It is poor from them. They are all square here.

:09:25. > :09:58.That is poor from Simone Giannelli. The spike was fired straight at him.

:09:59. > :10:15.Off the block. I don't think there was a block on it. It came out wide.

:10:16. > :10:28.No surprise to see a time-out being called. The Italians are not having

:10:29. > :10:30.it there in way in this first set. -- they are not having it their own

:10:31. > :11:20.way. That is a dangerous game when you

:11:21. > :11:31.have got Zaytsev operating like that. They isolated that Blocker,

:11:32. > :11:42.Ebadipour losing out in that head to head with Zaytsev. Italy back in

:11:43. > :11:49.control. Zaytsev wants more of the block.

:11:50. > :11:56.Thunderous from Zaytsev. They had two blockers there. But he knew what

:11:57. > :12:14.he was doing, aiming almost to get off the block.

:12:15. > :12:25.Down the line, beautiful. No response to that, and I was only one

:12:26. > :12:30.block there anyway. Those super slow-mo 's enhanced the spectating

:12:31. > :12:33.of any sport, let's be honest, but in volleyball, you get a real sense

:12:34. > :12:40.of the reach of these players, the heights they can get to. Well

:12:41. > :12:45.defended by the Iranians. And then Italy with another set, and a

:12:46. > :12:54.finish. They thought they had done enough in that first phase attack,

:12:55. > :13:07.but credit the Iranian defending. Juantorena timed it to perfection.

:13:08. > :13:16.That is a free pass now. Can they put it away? Good block. The

:13:17. > :13:32.overpass came straight back for Italy, and they didn't kill it.

:13:33. > :13:40.Filippo Lanza at full stretch there. The Iranian captain, Marouf, experts

:13:41. > :13:45.set, multi-award-winning. It is his unhurried approach which calms

:13:46. > :13:59.Mahmoudi and others, who can get quite emotional. Back on level

:14:00. > :14:12.terms. Repeatedly, it is a deceiving server. It swerves and dips and

:14:13. > :14:25.spins. It is not always easy to dig. Top stuff from Iran. There is the

:14:26. > :14:28.captain. It was simple, and they split the block on the Italian side

:14:29. > :14:41.of the net, Birarelli completely isolated.

:14:42. > :14:59.Birarelli, the captain, doing what he can do. Piano could be joining

:15:00. > :15:07.soon. Here is Piano. That is an ace. Wonderful. If he finds his range,

:15:08. > :15:31.Iran could be struggling. We see it so often. It is difficult

:15:32. > :15:38.enough to win a point in volleyball and get your serve back. But when it

:15:39. > :15:44.is given up as easily as that, it is difficult.

:15:45. > :15:51.Though, well, they all left it for one another on the Iranians side of

:15:52. > :16:00.the net and the Italians have caught a break. Expecting the Spike and

:16:01. > :16:10.this time they played something different. Just out. There are

:16:11. > :16:18.challenges allowed at these Rio Olympics. They have the Hawk-Eye

:16:19. > :16:23.cameras. Italy going for it. Felt it was in, why not give it a go? Well

:16:24. > :16:28.through the match. Two challenges per set, was it in or out? That's

:16:29. > :16:38.the decision facing the Hawk-Eye officials. Did the serve land in or

:16:39. > :16:42.was it in Sao Paulo? That was out. Well worth it, but that means, as

:16:43. > :16:49.you can see, they just have one challenge remaining. If they'd won

:16:50. > :16:57.it, they would still have two. Playing it safe with the serve, and

:16:58. > :17:08.when they get the serve right, running onto it, having something of

:17:09. > :17:14.a purple patch, beer rarely. Isolating the blocker, which is key

:17:15. > :17:20.to killing the attack. The set and the Spike off the block and the

:17:21. > :17:25.Iranians have scored. Not the deepest of Serbs from Birarelli. --

:17:26. > :17:51.serves. Another strong serve. Doing what he

:17:52. > :18:02.does best, coming in from the wide right wing position, is a yet

:18:03. > :18:10.serve -- Zaytsev. You can mix it up, he can go crosscourt, but it is

:18:11. > :18:16.knowing when to drop in the subtlety as well. Italy on serve and Iran

:18:17. > :18:26.have scored, with Italy getting a taste of their own medicine. When

:18:27. > :18:34.they stick together, there is little comeback. The best blocker but also

:18:35. > :18:46.a mighty finisher too. That's a good serve, it was out by not very much.

:18:47. > :18:56.The temptation to go for the challenge. Italy can increase the

:18:57. > :19:04.lead if they go further ahead. Zaytsev going big and into the net.

:19:05. > :19:15.At this stage in the set, it becomes, as much as anything, a

:19:16. > :19:19.battle of nerves. The little floated serve, Italy set and they've just

:19:20. > :19:27.gone into the believe again. That's what it means. We are seeing Oleg

:19:28. > :19:31.Antonov coming on now. One of the replacements, the substitute player

:19:32. > :19:35.who played a lot of the game against Canada and by the end he had found

:19:36. > :19:40.his rhythm, especially with his serve, which is why he's been

:19:41. > :19:45.brought on. If he picks up where he left off against Canada, Iran may be

:19:46. > :20:05.on the back foot. Great top spin on that server. That's a good score

:20:06. > :20:20.from the Iranians, my -- my -- ten Faye again. -- Mahmoudi again.

:20:21. > :20:33.Oh, Mahmoudi. Down the side. What a brilliant pass, absolutely

:20:34. > :20:41.brilliant. It was a good set as well. The buzzer sounds, Italy

:20:42. > :20:47.time-out. Not surprised. Three more scores are required here, to take

:20:48. > :21:37.the set. 22-21, Iran are on serve. It is a

:21:38. > :21:55.bad -- Ebadipour deserve, skimming the net. They'll take that. -- to

:21:56. > :22:04.serve. Italy are to serve. If they keep the standard up it's going to

:22:05. > :22:11.be some match. Giannelli to serve again. A good serve as well. Second

:22:12. > :22:23.contact and the third and it just cannoned off the shoulder. Zaytsev.

:22:24. > :22:34.Iran, edging closer. The top scorer of the match, Mahmoudi. You can

:22:35. > :22:41.understand the furrowed brow of the captain, Birarelli. That wasn't the

:22:42. > :22:56.finish that Zaytsev wanted, but off the block, the dig that and happen.

:22:57. > :23:02.Zaytsev will be disappointed. Perhaps getting a touch lucky there.

:23:03. > :23:09.But they have the serve and if it is a clean ace they will have set

:23:10. > :23:17.point. Dear me, not the time for another service fault because Iran

:23:18. > :23:28.have set point. Interesting times inside the Americans Ennio here. Two

:23:29. > :23:46.-- Maracanazinho. Whenever they are approaching

:23:47. > :23:53.something important in the set, an comes Mahdavi. This is dumping

:23:54. > :24:01.difficult -- on comes. Italy breathing a sigh of relief. That

:24:02. > :24:05.depth, it wasn't the easiest dig. So, the first set, you have to be

:24:06. > :24:22.two scores clear to take the set. It is in play, the key part. Oh,

:24:23. > :24:32.what a block from Zaytsev. That was mighty. Ghafour, only just on the

:24:33. > :24:45.court, letting fly, but Zaytsev blocked it outstandingly well. Just

:24:46. > :24:54.to disrupt here, Iran call a time-out.

:24:55. > :25:03.How far have they come over the last few years? Climbing up the world

:25:04. > :25:06.rankings, taking Poland, I watched the match, they were outstanding.

:25:07. > :25:12.They had match points before Poland and could have closed it out for an

:25:13. > :25:16.historic first Olympic victory. Instead they squandered their match

:25:17. > :25:26.points and eventually, Poland took them out. So now, Italy, with the

:25:27. > :25:36.captain, Birarelli serving for the first set. Continuing off the block.

:25:37. > :25:46.Trying to go down the line and off the block from the Italian defence,

:25:47. > :25:54.Ghaemi. Saving one set point. It's a case of thinking clearly under

:25:55. > :26:01.pressure. Again it is the running serve and it is a deep one. Italy

:26:02. > :26:12.receiving it well, Zaytsev. Iran get it. The team in white get it for

:26:13. > :26:22.another set point. Well played, gaffe or -- Ghafour.

:26:23. > :26:38.If this serve is good... Ghaemi going strong into the net, another

:26:39. > :26:43.one going for glory and another set point has been squandered. Italy

:26:44. > :26:48.have gone level. They have the chance to push forward for their own

:26:49. > :27:05.set point. And here is the man to do it. Is over. It seemed to bobble

:27:06. > :27:06.over the net. And off the block, Ghafour strikes again for the third

:27:07. > :27:25.set point. Zaytsev, has this set slipped away?

:27:26. > :27:33.It was a risky league. They've just got it right. Back court, the

:27:34. > :27:50.Italian defence. -- risky leave. Here come the changes. Playing here

:27:51. > :27:55.as a wing spiker, but he has a good serve. He has been brought on to do

:27:56. > :28:01.a job. That is a floater and it is too long. You could see what he was

:28:02. > :28:06.trying to do. Iran, the defence moved aside to let the ball drop.

:28:07. > :28:15.Making the right decision. What's that phrase, you had one job. He

:28:16. > :28:28.didn't make it there. Mahmoudi here for Iran. Iran are on their fourth

:28:29. > :28:39.set point. Defending, and that finished by Italy, wow. 28-28, went

:28:40. > :28:47.who is going to blink first, this is key. If Italy were to get ahead, how

:28:48. > :28:53.would Iran react? The more experienced international

:28:54. > :29:10.competitors. That was a good dig by Zaytsev. And Juantorena. They have

:29:11. > :29:15.the serve. That first dig in defence from Italy was crucial because Iran

:29:16. > :29:21.were playing catch up in the rally. Italy enjoying the set and finishing

:29:22. > :29:36.the point. So it is a second time out here.

:29:37. > :29:43.Very experienced, in charge of the national teams of Spain, Poland and

:29:44. > :29:53.Germany. Coast in Italy, Greece and Poland. A wealth of experience --

:29:54. > :29:57.coached in. And they are benefiting, the way that they have beaten some

:29:58. > :30:05.of the top teams, although they are up against it now. Quarterfinals,

:30:06. > :30:17.Italy with the second point. Ooh, just going down, pouncing up over

:30:18. > :30:21.the net. He knew what he wanted to do, Birarelli but the ball didn't

:30:22. > :30:35.fall where he landed. Iran were up against Cuba earlier in

:30:36. > :30:47.the tournament. They are bedding in for the long haul.

:30:48. > :31:11.Can they finish this set of? This could be a scramble.

:31:12. > :31:19.The captain, Emanuele Birarelli. And for all that effort, Iran have

:31:20. > :31:23.suffered a first set defeat. Italy pushed all the way, and you can tell

:31:24. > :31:34.there was relief as much as joy when that ball landed on the Iranian side

:31:35. > :31:38.of the net. DAN WALKER: amazing stuff at the

:31:39. > :31:41.Maracana Xenia Knoll. Italy take the first set. I know they were

:31:42. > :31:45.celebrating as though they had won the match, but we could well be in

:31:46. > :31:49.for a long night here on BBC Four, because this is best-of-5 and you

:31:50. > :31:53.can see how evenly matched they are. Stay with us, we will get back for

:31:54. > :31:56.that. I know lots of you have sinned through messages on social media,

:31:57. > :32:03.asking about the guy on each side with the different coloured shirt

:32:04. > :32:11.on. I will explain the role of the Libero. But let's just bring you the

:32:12. > :32:16.BBC Four day 12 headlines. In the men's football, Brazil beat

:32:17. > :32:20.Honduras 6-0 in the semifinal. They go into Saturday's gold medal match,

:32:21. > :32:27.where they take on Germany, who got the better of Nigeria by 2-0.

:32:28. > :32:32.We all know it's not been a great Games for Team GB's boxers, and

:32:33. > :32:36.Savannah Marshall today lost in her quarterfinal against her nemesis,

:32:37. > :32:43.Nouchka Fontijn. Nicola Adams and Joe Joyce are the only two GB boxers

:32:44. > :32:48.who remain. We have seen a lot of Rajiv Ouseph

:32:49. > :32:53.on BBC Four, and he was also out today at the quarterfinal stage of

:32:54. > :33:00.the singles badminton. He lost 2-0 to Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.

:33:01. > :33:03.On the track today, there was another stumble, but Mo Farah

:33:04. > :33:08.produced the goods once again. He managed to finish third and goes

:33:09. > :33:13.into the final of the 5000 metres. He will be going for his fourth

:33:14. > :33:17.Olympic title in the final tee up to the 10,000 metre gold he won the

:33:18. > :33:23.other day and the two golds from London four years ago.

:33:24. > :33:29.And Charley Hull is in a good position after the first round of

:33:30. > :33:36.the women's golf here in Rio. 3-under par round for her today, and

:33:37. > :33:42.she is three off the lead. Now, on BBC One right now, you can

:33:43. > :33:46.see that Team GB are in a very good position in the fourth quarter of

:33:47. > :33:51.their semifinal against New Zealand. 3-0 up, so the bronze medallists

:33:52. > :33:55.from four years ago set to be into the gold medal match. They will be

:33:56. > :33:59.taking on the Dutch, who came through their semifinal against

:34:00. > :34:07.Germany. We will try and bring you that, I imagine, on BBC One over the

:34:08. > :34:10.next few days. Now, cool Delta sent a message

:34:11. > :34:13.saying, watching the volleyball, came in halfway through. What does

:34:14. > :34:18.it mean that they have a member of the opposition on each team? It is

:34:19. > :34:21.not that. The player with a different coloured shirt is called

:34:22. > :34:24.the Libero. There are slightly shorter than some of the other

:34:25. > :34:29.significant units on those volleyball sides. They are the free

:34:30. > :34:38.player. They are restricted to being a back row player. They cannot

:34:39. > :34:42.complete an attack. They may not serve. They are not allowed to block

:34:43. > :34:46.real attempt to block, and they must wear a different coloured shirt from

:34:47. > :34:49.the other members of the team. And they are not allowed in that

:34:50. > :34:53.different coloured area by the net. Keep your eye on the Libero and keep

:34:54. > :34:58.your eyes on this one, because Italy took the first set. It is going to

:34:59. > :35:05.go all the way, I have a feeling. It is best-of-5 sets. Let's go back and

:35:06. > :35:18.rejoin our commentators at the start of the second set.

:35:19. > :35:35.COMMENTATOR: Good block. He is the best blocker. He was trying to go

:35:36. > :35:44.crosscourt, but Saeid had got his hand where he wanted it. Italy are

:35:45. > :35:57.looking to get off the mark. They manage it.

:35:58. > :36:08.A breakthrough in the world league of 2015 for the Iranians. Well, it

:36:09. > :36:12.is a risky manoeuvre at the best of times and it wasn't the best

:36:13. > :36:19.contact. It was almost like he took his eye off the ball, Seyed. He was

:36:20. > :36:36.given the window, but couldn't push through.

:36:37. > :36:43.That one worked, but Italy were reading it. A block against Seyed,

:36:44. > :36:55.magnificent. Again, thwarting Zaytsev. The jump, the height and

:36:56. > :37:00.reach over the net were perfect. It's not just about the block, it's

:37:01. > :37:20.arranging your hands so it turns into a kill. That was long.

:37:21. > :37:29.Juantorena, maintaining this top six rotation. Coming in for the kill was

:37:30. > :37:54.Ebadipour. The decoy was Seyed. That came wide off the block, I

:37:55. > :38:12.think. Just off the elbow of my roof. Well, like

:38:13. > :38:16.in any sport, it is a combination of technique and skill and a bit of

:38:17. > :38:31.luck, and that was the case there with that Italian score. Poor set,

:38:32. > :38:35.too close to the net. That gave every opportunity for the blockers

:38:36. > :38:48.to be ready, and then put pressure on Lanza, and they lost the point.

:38:49. > :39:02.Better set, and that is why you need a good set.

:39:03. > :39:12.What are they going to do? Goodness me, what force behind that serve

:39:13. > :39:23.from Zaytsev. That is superb. They need a bit of a lift here, and they

:39:24. > :39:31.need this man to provide it. He was an Olympic gold medallist for the

:39:32. > :39:35.USSR, his father. He was playing in Italy at the time, and Zaytsev was

:39:36. > :39:48.born there. And he's becoming a hero for Italy. It worked so well in the

:39:49. > :39:54.first set. Not on this occasion. The twists and turns by the Italian

:39:55. > :40:00.blockers, and the ball move go crosscourt, and Italy have a two

:40:01. > :40:14.break. Zaytsev has been the architect of this. He wanted the

:40:15. > :40:15.ace, but not that time. Too long. Looking for consistency in that

:40:16. > :40:45.power serve, but not finding it. A smile from Ebadipour. Absolutely

:40:46. > :40:46.brilliant. Try doing that at home. Absolutely superb, the plunge down,

:40:47. > :41:08.the dive and they win the point. They go for power, but of the block.

:41:09. > :41:17.When those arms are strong, the ball just ricochets. And in court as

:41:18. > :41:23.well. You're always expecting one team's level to drop-off and one

:41:24. > :41:27.side of the net to see a run of points. It hasn't happened in the

:41:28. > :41:31.first set or the second here. The Italians were pushed all the way in

:41:32. > :41:37.that opening set, and the second is going exactly the same, nip and

:41:38. > :41:48.tuck. Italy have the serve on this occasion. If you're hurting, you

:41:49. > :41:54.know the other people are hurting. Both sides were at it. Iran knows

:41:55. > :41:58.it's no good feeling sorry for themselves, they have to do it

:41:59. > :42:07.again. And once more, they are back in the front. Wow, 12 for Italy.

:42:08. > :42:11.That is 12 scores that have been offered to Iran here. That is a lot.

:42:12. > :42:16.If you're talking about winning gold medals, you need to cut that out.

:42:17. > :42:35.There is another service fault. That is three service faults in a

:42:36. > :43:03.row, two for Italy, one for Iran. Italy draw level. Some spectacular

:43:04. > :43:08.rallies, but this is intense competition. They know what is at

:43:09. > :43:12.stake, a place in the semifinals. For Iran, on their first Olympic

:43:13. > :43:15.appearance, this is an occasion to be treasured and also won if

:43:16. > :43:26.possible, against one of the top teams in the world.

:43:27. > :43:42.He has done it again, Seyed! Superb. Three men in a line, an Iranian

:43:43. > :43:45.wall, and the tallest, Seyed. Off his left arm, it drops down

:43:46. > :44:09.obediently, and they are back in front.

:44:10. > :44:20.Birarelli goes over. That was easy for Italy to receive, turn from

:44:21. > :44:24.defence to a fence, and then Birarelli kills -- from defence to

:44:25. > :44:40.fence. I thought that was going out of the

:44:41. > :44:46.arena! It is another service fault. One step forward, but Iran seemed to

:44:47. > :44:57.take two. No end in sight to this misfiring on the serve for Italy.

:44:58. > :45:10.Zaytsev! When that happens, volleyball is made to look easy.

:45:11. > :45:15.Incomes Zaytsev, the specialist. He goes crosscourt and Lancet. -- lands

:45:16. > :45:30.it. You've got to admired the

:45:31. > :45:40.partnership, he knows where he's going to be, Mahmoudi. Seyed was

:45:41. > :45:50.waiting. Making that part of the net his own, blocking and attacking.

:45:51. > :46:00.Take that. Birarelli, huge presence at the net. Standing over two metres

:46:01. > :46:11.tall. Time-out is not called by Italy. Piano, two of his eight.

:46:12. > :46:16.Clever, Colletti is just as good and Zaytsev, fantastic defence from

:46:17. > :46:24.Iran. The third contact must tip the ball over the net. Here come Italy,

:46:25. > :46:28.Iran still defending. The second referee intervened, there was a net

:46:29. > :46:35.touch which is why Italy have taken the point. A big point, that, as

:46:36. > :46:46.well. And so easy to get close to the net and touch it before you hit

:46:47. > :46:53.the ball. Over two decades since they last failed to make a Olympic

:46:54. > :46:59.semifinal in the men's Whalley ball. The right channel and he really

:47:00. > :47:07.found the finish, Mahmoudi smack volleyball. He was onto it in a

:47:08. > :47:24.flash, man moody. Two blockers, no problem. They covered the cross ball

:47:25. > :47:32.Ashya's -- Mahmoudi. Was that one of the Iranians attackers on the back

:47:33. > :47:45.line? Was the libero infringing as well? Rejected, so we stay as we

:47:46. > :47:54.were, 14-14. Fantastic value, great entertainment and we still possibly

:47:55. > :48:01.have four more sets to go. Zaytsev again, and the tip. Two touches says

:48:02. > :48:08.the referee. Just the hands possibly of Mahmoudi is not working in

:48:09. > :48:10.unison. Not just a question of picking it up and doing it again,

:48:11. > :49:00.the left-hand and the right-hand. So, we go again here at 15-14,

:49:01. > :49:10.neither team has had a lead of more than one. But this is the

:49:11. > :49:16.quarterfinal, the Olympic Games. A semifinal place is on offer against

:49:17. > :49:22.the United States. 15-14, Italy are on serve. This is going to be a lead

:49:23. > :49:27.of two for someone but the first time in the match. Great defence and

:49:28. > :49:37.I think it is, they thought they had scored off the block. Oh, 15-15, it

:49:38. > :49:42.has gone against the Italians, that's why you can see the animation

:49:43. > :49:48.on the sidelines. The code leading the fight, no surprise to see the

:49:49. > :49:58.challenge. -- the coach. They turned away in absolute conviction there.

:49:59. > :50:01.So, Italy claiming there was no touch, it went straight through the

:50:02. > :50:14.block and therefore they should get the point, not Iran. Not agreed, the

:50:15. > :50:28.referee has said that it was off the block. So, Ebadipour, 15-15. Take

:50:29. > :50:35.that, from Lanza. If the referee isn't going to help us, we'll help

:50:36. > :50:40.ourselves. Back court power, Buti was there as the decoy, there is

:50:41. > :50:48.Lanza. Only one in the block and no way he was going to beat back in

:50:49. > :50:53.that split second. A demonstration of exactly why the quality of the

:50:54. > :51:01.set has to be there for either side. A good, deep set has the attacker

:51:02. > :51:06.running on it from back court, plenty of follow-through. A better

:51:07. > :51:14.angle to aim it down and over the net. Here come the Iranians. Now

:51:15. > :51:18.there is a lead of two. 17-15, Italy on serve and they have set

:51:19. > :51:29.themselves up at the business end of the second set. That's super, really

:51:30. > :51:32.good net play, superb defence. Antonov has come on and has

:51:33. > :51:43.delivered. Maintaining the service again. It is good. The block is

:51:44. > :51:51.ready but so too is Lanza. And again, off the block, it is 18-15.

:51:52. > :51:56.The change has worked. Antonov comes on and it is two good Serbs in a row

:51:57. > :52:04.and what was one point is now a 3-point lead -- serves. And there is

:52:05. > :52:05.the buzzer. Iran needs to break the concentration, break the Italian

:52:06. > :52:51.momentum. First big challenge for Iran in this

:52:52. > :52:59.match. They've stayed with them until they were just partying at the

:53:00. > :53:06.end of the first set. Now, Oleg Antonov, as you may have guessed, he

:53:07. > :53:11.is Russian. It came back on the Italian side of the net and they

:53:12. > :53:17.kill it, four points clear. Very rare that we see no defence of the

:53:18. > :53:31.pup from Iran. Almost a free score. 19-15. -- the defence of Iran. The

:53:32. > :53:37.switch for Antonov. Just going for gold, but it was too long. Even so,

:53:38. > :53:43.it is a big move forward which is why Buti was so fulsome in his

:53:44. > :53:49.praise. Giving Antonov, young player making his way, although he is 28

:53:50. > :53:57.years old, starting his international career, a big boost.

:53:58. > :54:04.Coming back Woods off the blog, is eight serve getting what he and

:54:05. > :54:14.Italy wanted -- coming backwards off the block, Zaytsev. One of the best

:54:15. > :54:20.in the world, he seems to hang there and somehow mobilises that huge

:54:21. > :54:24.power through his arm. Giannelli, more confidence and it's the ace.

:54:25. > :54:30.Look at the speed, 100 kilometres per hour. They've made the break and

:54:31. > :54:34.they are going for the line. Talk about game management from the

:54:35. > :54:41.Italians. Never more than one school clear until we reached around 16 and

:54:42. > :54:54.then the coaches made the switch and Italy have really turned the screw.

:54:55. > :54:57.Leading by five. Given away. The service faults, we've seen a lot of

:54:58. > :55:02.it from Italy in the first set and they haven't eradicated the issue.

:55:03. > :55:17.Here they are, going back to their A formation in the face of adversity,

:55:18. > :55:23.the Iranians, it is Ghafour and Mahdavi coming on. That's caused

:55:24. > :55:30.problems for is eight serve. Very much advantage Iran -- it is

:55:31. > :55:37.Zaytsev. And they have taken the point. Again, it look like and

:55:38. > :55:43.innocuous and innocent serve, floated over but even Zaytsev

:55:44. > :55:51.couldn't deal with it properly, that is the skill of Mahmoudi. Deceptive

:55:52. > :56:02.in the air. The Italian lead was five, not any more. It was in, the

:56:03. > :56:07.Italians aren't happy about it. No, no, no, they say. They claim it was

:56:08. > :56:15.out and the referee agrees. You wonder if there is going to be a

:56:16. > :56:18.challenge. Can't believe it. The referee is absolutely adamant. No

:56:19. > :56:35.challenge. The backspin on that. It came along,

:56:36. > :56:41.23-18, the advantage is back to five here. Italy creeping towards the

:56:42. > :56:48.finish line in the second set. It's a big set, isn't it, 1-1 or 2-0.

:56:49. > :56:53.Psychologically, it will affect the team who have won the set. If it is

:56:54. > :56:59.Italy, just one more will be required. Kill block, here come the

:57:00. > :57:06.Italian team. So, the Iranians are back on serve. You can see the

:57:07. > :57:13.confidence growing and coursing through the Italian team. When

:57:14. > :57:23.they've made the break, the serves that previously were going too long,

:57:24. > :57:35.now the pressure is on Iran. It is set point, Italy. Juantorena, you

:57:36. > :57:37.knew from those cheers. The captain, Birarelli, who has the chance to

:57:38. > :57:57.close out the second set. Off the block. And off the blog, it

:57:58. > :58:03.is a simple, 25-19 and Italy, having been pushed to extra time, in the

:58:04. > :58:09.sense that they were pushed in the first set, this time they've done it

:58:10. > :58:19.in regulation -- lock. And Iran have just about pushed Italy in the

:58:20. > :58:25.second set -- block. Italy have the big-game experience and telling

:58:26. > :58:28.Serbs from Antonov. STUDIO: -- telling serves. Italy against Iran

:58:29. > :58:34.in the men's volleyball quarterfinal. We will be back for

:58:35. > :58:38.the third and possibly decisive set. Talking in the break about the

:58:39. > :58:57.importance of the libero, I just want to show you the work of

:58:58. > :59:07.Marandi. On BBC One while we showed you the volleyball, Team GB have

:59:08. > :59:13.been involved in the semifinal of the women's hockey and the good news

:59:14. > :59:18.is that they have won 3-0. They are into the gold-medal match. You can

:59:19. > :59:22.see what it meant. That game against the Netherlands, the number one

:59:23. > :59:29.ranked team in the world, will take place on Friday. 9pm, UK time. Team

:59:30. > :59:35.GB, led by Kate Richardson waltz, taking on the Americans after

:59:36. > :59:45.beating New Zealand come principally 3-0. A fewer early scares, New

:59:46. > :59:49.Zealand had chances -- a few. New Zealand, dejected, and the bronze

:59:50. > :59:55.medallists, Team GB, have a chance to go for the Gold Medal against the

:59:56. > :00:00.Netherlands. A lot of you getting excited about the arrival of the

:00:01. > :00:04.Copacabinmen and I can tell you that they are preparing the circuit

:00:05. > :00:08.training area. No sign of Antony Worrall Thompson but we'll keep out

:00:09. > :00:12.a close eye. Normally at this time we are preparing for the arrival of

:00:13. > :00:20.the bin men. If you are watching for the first time, they waved to us,

:00:21. > :00:27.they are called Raphael, Donatello, Pedro and Alejandro, so they are 50%

:00:28. > :00:33.there to being the Teenage Mutant Binmen. Tonight we thought that they

:00:34. > :00:36.had come. We recorded this 15 minutes ago. This is a brand-new

:00:37. > :00:50.development. Enter Sandman! This is the fellow who smooths out

:00:51. > :00:56.the sand on Copacabana and gives it a bit of a clean. Now, you do not

:00:57. > :01:00.get that at Copacabognor. Incredible scenes. We were thinking we might

:01:01. > :01:08.slow that down for you for some intense replay action. There you go!

:01:09. > :01:18.That, my friends, is slow motions and action. You do not get that on

:01:19. > :01:21.BBC One. -- slow motion sand action. If the Copacabinmen come, we will

:01:22. > :01:30.bring you news on that. Let's get back to the volleyball. Third set

:01:31. > :01:38.from the Maracanazinho. Italy 2-0 up. They have to win this at Iran to

:01:39. > :01:53.keep the match going. Let's pick up the commentary.

:01:54. > :02:02.COMMENTATOR: Maybe we are going to see the Italians mixing it up here.

:02:03. > :02:06.Cheap point given away. That was either going to be a brilliant

:02:07. > :02:19.serve, fooling everybody, or just disappear.

:02:20. > :02:40.Wow, so powerful from Filippo Lanza. You could see he was primed. Just a

:02:41. > :02:51.big leap. Italy into the lead already. Absolutely huge leap from

:02:52. > :03:09.Juantorena. Again, it is the confidence game.

:03:10. > :03:18.Oh, that was super from Zaytsev. Absolutely brilliant. The best

:03:19. > :03:22.players improvise, and that is what Zaytsev did there. He made up for

:03:23. > :03:31.his error earlier. He pushed into the back the court. Not only did he

:03:32. > :03:38.get it over, he placed it and won the point. That is why you look to

:03:39. > :03:42.your defensive specialist, the libero, and say, you should have

:03:43. > :03:53.been factoring that in. It didn't happen for Iran. You just

:03:54. > :04:03.wonder if this entire fixture now is slipping away from the Iranians. You

:04:04. > :04:08.talk about the intensity of the match. If you have done it again and

:04:09. > :04:10.again like the Italians have, it asks a lot of the body and mind to

:04:11. > :04:30.keep so alert. Well, when it works, it really

:04:31. > :04:34.works. My roof again, swooping like a swallow. It is like a football

:04:35. > :04:39.match. Maybe a smaller team could keep pace for 70 minutes, and then

:04:40. > :04:42.in the last 20, the more experienced team starts to make that experience

:04:43. > :05:13.and expertise tell. There is a screen of players waiting

:05:14. > :05:18.on the Iranian side, trying to camouflage where the ball might go.

:05:19. > :05:29.The point, of course, is to get over the net. That is not what Ebadipour

:05:30. > :05:40.managed. Zaytsev has his knee braces on.

:05:41. > :05:54.Iran get the nod. It can often be more down to luck than judgment as

:05:55. > :06:14.to who wins the point. Off the block. Italy are back in the

:06:15. > :06:25.ascendancy. Clever by Giannelli. The block was close. He could have set

:06:26. > :06:30.it. It went off Seyed's head! They all count. But that was not what

:06:31. > :06:38.they were expecting, and it paid off.

:06:39. > :07:02.Good placement, Ghafour. And brilliant by Marouf.

:07:03. > :07:20.That was the expression which said it all.

:07:21. > :07:59.Oh, brilliant! Giannelli, and again, it's that speed of thought at the

:08:00. > :08:03.net. ", Kill. He went for the spike of the previous point. This time, it

:08:04. > :08:39.was the left arm over. To execute that crosscourt spike,

:08:40. > :08:48.you have do stand pretty much side on. Off the block, so Iran are

:08:49. > :09:13.edging back. Zaytsev, thank you very much indeed.

:09:14. > :09:24.Slapped that one away. Receive and kill. Move and fire. Zaytsev, just

:09:25. > :09:47.down the right of Marouf. Wow, that looked to be going out but

:09:48. > :09:50.was just off the block. They have found the accelerator, but there is

:09:51. > :10:42.a red light from the coaches. Big trouble for Iran if Italy start

:10:43. > :11:10.to move away. Just in, not by much. It just lands

:11:11. > :11:18.on that red line. Zaytsev is not sure, because he turns around and

:11:19. > :11:29.wants confirmation. Another absolute storm as a serve. When they get that

:11:30. > :11:35.serve right, boy, it looks good. Zaytsev, right-wing spike again of

:11:36. > :11:43.that block to make it look easy. Iran are reeling. They are making

:11:44. > :11:47.the changes. Ghaemi is coming back. Just trying to freshen it up. You

:11:48. > :11:52.sense that this is their sixth game on their Olympic debut. They have

:11:53. > :11:56.played outstandingly well. They are learning all the time, but now they

:11:57. > :12:02.are coming up against hugely experienced teams, players who have

:12:03. > :12:03.been around and played top-level international volleyball, and it is

:12:04. > :12:18.telling. Good swing. Not even Juantorena

:12:19. > :12:21.could keep that up. Yes, two sets down, but still having their

:12:22. > :12:33.moments, Iran. They just need more moments like that. That is not

:12:34. > :12:40.going to help their cause, their big Spica, Mahmoudi, taking a breather.

:12:41. > :12:46.They need all their big players at the moment. Good decision-making at

:12:47. > :12:58.the net from Ghafour. But Italy take the point. Maybe the

:12:59. > :13:28.second official spotted a net touch. The Birarelli, two metres tall and

:13:29. > :13:34.still gets the ball off the floor. This was brilliant from Birarelli.

:13:35. > :13:39.He gets there, but to keep it in play is a different skill entirely.

:13:40. > :13:53.We know Zaytsev is a full on customer. And he is there with the

:13:54. > :13:54.spike. Zarini is one of the guys they brought on to provide some

:13:55. > :14:13.fresh legs here. The Italians started in Atlanta in

:14:14. > :14:21.1996. They medalled only wants at the Olympics, in 2008. What a serve!

:14:22. > :14:24.Absolutely outstanding. Completely deceived everyone. Even his

:14:25. > :14:27.team-mates didn't know where that was going. In a hurry to get this

:14:28. > :14:54.done and dusted, Italy. Time-out. Silver medal in Atlanta for Italy,

:14:55. > :14:58.bronze in Sydney, Silver again in Athens. So they have had their fair

:14:59. > :15:05.share of gold medal match heartbreak. Fourth in 2008, and back

:15:06. > :15:09.on the podium with a bronze at Earls Court in London. Don't talk to them

:15:10. > :15:13.about the gold medal. They have never won it, and that is their big

:15:14. > :15:18.target here, having made such a great start and now heading towards

:15:19. > :15:25.the semifinals, seemingly. Maybe this could be their Games.

:15:26. > :15:38.What a good serve, skimming the net. Lanza with the chance to finish and

:15:39. > :15:42.down the line it goes, 17-10. Iran must feel they are treading through

:15:43. > :15:47.concrete at the moment. Everything seemed to work at one stage, Italy

:15:48. > :15:53.took those two sets but they pushed them all the way. Here, they are

:15:54. > :15:56.being left behind, like the marrow from one who thought he was on

:15:57. > :16:06.course for the Gold Medal but the more experienced companion decides

:16:07. > :16:13.to click on -- the marathon runner. It is the familiar change for Iran

:16:14. > :16:24.in an adversity. Zaytsev still gets it wrong. It was long. Never mind,

:16:25. > :16:37.they'll kick on. 17-11, Iran back on serve. It's a long way back for

:16:38. > :16:41.Iran. Waving the flag is. -- flags. The referee confirming 18-11. Lanza,

:16:42. > :17:03.a mighty swing. And here comes ros seeny -- Rossini.

:17:04. > :17:13.Floater, that's not a good one. Not at all, they've just dropped off,

:17:14. > :17:21.the Iranians. Again it seemed such a simple serve but it caused

:17:22. > :17:31.confusion. You don't get the sense of the swerve that the players can

:17:32. > :17:41.put on it. Iran, up to 12. Well played, Ghafour. Has the ball in

:17:42. > :17:51.hand. Isolating the blocker, Juantorena.

:17:52. > :18:19.It is one point two score for Italy. He is so important for them, that is

:18:20. > :18:25.why they were worried in the game when he landed awkwardly on his

:18:26. > :18:30.ankle against France, early on. He carried on, he didn't want to miss

:18:31. > :18:34.that because previously they had been whitewashed against France,

:18:35. > :18:43.losing the last five matches, but that start has been built. Antonov,

:18:44. > :18:57.the key player from the second set. Just at the net. Zaytsev comes. But

:18:58. > :19:01.he doesn't conquer. Good block. Buti returns but if you look at the

:19:02. > :19:11.sadistic 's, 32 points scored between Zaytsev and Juantorena --

:19:12. > :19:18.the statistics. It has been too piecemeal from Iran. What a good

:19:19. > :19:24.serve, but it's just out. The line judge had his flag down. Looking at

:19:25. > :19:33.it, isn't he, really staring it down. Are we going to the video?

:19:34. > :19:47.Juantorena is saying it is out, he left it, it is out. Off-balance

:19:48. > :19:55.there. 22 playing 14 now. Italy are up against the semifinal and if you

:19:56. > :20:02.listen carefully you can hear keys jangling. The first three sets.

:20:03. > :20:08.Italy are on course here to take their place in the last four with

:20:09. > :20:16.plenty to spare. OK, service fault again, that's the mistakes of the

:20:17. > :20:29.first set again but the advantageous is still seven. What has Seyed got

:20:30. > :20:37.in the armoury? Strong, off the block. Juantorena taking another

:20:38. > :20:46.point and Italy are almost there. Two more points. The first to 25 or

:20:47. > :21:01.two points clear. Lanza back, the wing Spica. Presence at the net.

:21:02. > :21:06.Italy defending it, they are at the net again, Juantorena to try and get

:21:07. > :21:14.things going. Iran is scrambling, this will be some save if they can

:21:15. > :21:20.win the rally. Close to the net. Zaytsev in. Here they are with nine

:21:21. > :21:23.match points, Italy are on the verge now of cementing their place in the

:21:24. > :21:31.last four where they will face the United States. The US, as we know,

:21:32. > :21:40.clean sweep against Poland earlier. Russia against Brazil or Argentina

:21:41. > :21:52.in the other semifinal in the men's volleyball. Juantorena, is this

:21:53. > :21:58.going to be? Strong serve. Iran set, they will have to wait a bit longer,

:21:59. > :22:04.24-16, Iran is Irving. It sounds like they have an advantage -- Iran

:22:05. > :22:15.serving. It isn't like tennis unless it is a really belting serve. That

:22:16. > :22:24.was too long. He can't believe it. I think it is hoped more than

:22:25. > :22:31.expectation. It was a mighty swipe. Oh, no, what a way to bring it. The

:22:32. > :22:37.Iranians captain who has done so much to entertain and drive forward

:22:38. > :22:48.his team, his service fault hands the match to Italy, 3-0. It looks

:22:49. > :23:04.easy, especially in the set. If you ask Zaytsev or Juantorena or

:23:05. > :23:12.Mahmoudi. Without him on the court, Iran were not the same proposition.

:23:13. > :23:23.Gradually wearing them down. It's another semifinal for Italy at the

:23:24. > :23:32.Olympic Games. STUDIO: Great stuff in the volleyball in the marathons

:23:33. > :23:39.Ennio. Iran merely pushed the Italians -- really pushed. As

:23:40. > :23:45.Jonathan was saying, Italy, once again into the last four --

:23:46. > :23:52.Maracanazinho. So many of you enjoyed that. We are going fair at

:23:53. > :23:56.2am, but if you really want to see some intense volleyball, that's the

:23:57. > :24:00.best way to put it, Brazil against Argentina in the fourth

:24:01. > :24:05.quarter-final, that will be on the Red Button and also on the website

:24:06. > :24:10.and app. My editor is listening, may be we can show you the best bits of

:24:11. > :24:16.that tomorrow. Yes, we will. I'm making decisions for him. So many of

:24:17. > :24:23.you have enjoyed the volleyball. Diving and taekwondo in a moment. We

:24:24. > :24:34.have a crowd here, good evening, everybody. Are you all Brazilians?

:24:35. > :24:43.ALL: yes! Are you happy with your team? Yes. Are you going to win the

:24:44. > :24:49.final? No! Nice to see you enjoying yourselves. In case you missed it,

:24:50. > :24:56.Brazil beating Honduras 6-0 in the semifinal. Germany getting the

:24:57. > :25:01.better of Nigeria 2-0 and our German friends, enjoy your corn on the cob,

:25:02. > :25:08.gentlemen, it only costs ?1 50 and it is very tasty. We have some

:25:09. > :25:14.diving and taekwondo coming up later. I enjoy reading your messages

:25:15. > :25:19.through the evening, I'm glad so many of you enjoyed the coverage, it

:25:20. > :25:23.means a lot to us here. Steve Collins says that after the

:25:24. > :25:26.brilliant slow motion sand smoothing, any chance of some other

:25:27. > :25:38.slow motion activity on the beach? We will find out. The hashtag many

:25:39. > :25:44.of you are using is Copacabeachcomb, which I wish I had thought of all

:25:45. > :25:49.stop someone saying we should draft in Richard Attenborough. Somebody

:25:50. > :25:55.else says that they are ill but they are watching the volleyball and

:25:56. > :26:07.loving it, the saga of the binmen is putting a smile on their face.

:26:08. > :26:13.Daniel says that they have sand combers on the Isle of Man. Ten

:26:14. > :26:16.minutes ago during the deciding set in the volleyball, the boys were

:26:17. > :26:22.back and doing a magnificent job on the beach. Let's look at them going

:26:23. > :26:26.past. It was our favourites, Raphael, Pedro, although I don't

:26:27. > :26:31.think Donatello was there. There they are. They had the night off

:26:32. > :26:37.yesterday, we had some different binmen. The boys are back and they

:26:38. > :26:42.do a magnificent job. I think that's a new tractor. It's lovely, lovely

:26:43. > :26:49.to see them. We chat with them every day. Doing a great job on the beach.

:26:50. > :26:54.Getting a lot of binmen in the UK contacting us as well, we were

:26:55. > :27:01.talking to build yesterday about the fact that he thinks there going to

:27:02. > :27:07.be some kind of bin Olympics in years to come, some kind of

:27:08. > :27:12.discipline. He said that in Sunderland, his crew have been

:27:13. > :27:20.training, the bin bags throw, the garden wall hurdles and the snatch

:27:21. > :27:25.and hide, apparently! If you were a bin man or in the woman, maybe you'd

:27:26. > :27:32.like to get in contact and we'll have some new faces -- bin woman. We

:27:33. > :27:38.have some brand-new people joining us. Get training. I've not seen

:27:39. > :27:47.these chaps before. This is the beach drag. Always popular. There is

:27:48. > :27:55.a poodle as well. Did he come here last Wednesday? Hold on. Hold your

:27:56. > :28:00.horses. Anthony Watt old Thomson has just arrived, he is on the end, he's

:28:01. > :28:13.getting his trainers on -- Anthony Walker Thomson. Great to see him

:28:14. > :28:19.again. He claims to speak no English, but we all know that it is

:28:20. > :28:23.actually Antony Worrall Thompson. I think that is nine consecutive

:28:24. > :28:28.nights of doing circuit training. Credit to the man, that is

:28:29. > :28:36.impressive. Well done, AWT. We always say, no AWT, no party. We

:28:37. > :28:42.don't really say that! Shall we have some diving? Jack Laugher has been a

:28:43. > :28:47.real success in the games, winning the Silver Medal in the three metre

:28:48. > :28:51.springboard and the Gold Medal a week ago with Chris Mears in the

:28:52. > :28:58.synchronised three metre. We have some ten metre platform diving, the

:28:59. > :29:01.preliminary part of the competition. We have Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow

:29:02. > :29:03.trying to get through the preliminaries into the final. Let's

:29:04. > :29:24.show you how they got on. Strong finish from Tonya, not her

:29:25. > :29:32.best finish but it is good enough and clean enough and she has

:29:33. > :29:37.progressed through -- Tonia. We wanted safe passage through to the

:29:38. > :29:44.next round. Tonia safely through. Well done, Tonia. Good work today.

:29:45. > :29:52.She will be better in the semifinal. Not her very best. She is

:29:53. > :30:06.comfortably through. We can safely assume she is there. Fabulous

:30:07. > :30:11.effort. Not quite keeping the splashdown, I don't think that's

:30:12. > :30:15.good enough for Sarah. Disappointing for her, strong take-off, losing her

:30:16. > :30:22.feet a little bit. Just not quite keeping the splash down. She needs

:30:23. > :30:27.to be close to 300 points I think to make it through to the semifinal.

:30:28. > :30:33.She will be 20 point shiner of that. Yes, she is. Oh, dear.

:30:34. > :30:42.Thankfully, Tonia Couch got into the semifinal. We will pick up with her

:30:43. > :30:46.later. Afterwards, and understandably disappointed Sarah

:30:47. > :30:51.Barrow spoke to Helen Skelton. Sarah, hard. There are two is to

:30:52. > :30:56.look at that - one is disappointing, but then it rounds off the heck of a

:30:57. > :31:00.fight to make it into that team. Definitely. I am disappointed not to

:31:01. > :31:07.make the semi. My ultimate goal was to make the final. But like you

:31:08. > :31:11.said, it has been such a hard fight. Not getting selected for the singer

:31:12. > :31:15.and then having to change my mind set and do my individual dives again

:31:16. > :31:22.and come back from a horrible injury, my goal was to get here in

:31:23. > :31:26.first place. My parents are so proud that I achieved that, and that is

:31:27. > :31:30.fine for me. Tell us about that injury. Some of the commentators

:31:31. > :31:34.were saying doing those dives must have been painful. How difficult

:31:35. > :31:39.have the last couple of years been? Really difficult. In the World

:31:40. > :31:43.Championships, I did those dives with stress fractures. Both my shins

:31:44. > :31:46.were cracked. That is hard in itself, but when you are with

:31:47. > :31:52.asynchronous partner, sometimes you do it for the other person. When you

:31:53. > :31:57.are on your own, day in, day out, getting through those dives is so

:31:58. > :32:01.hard. My legs have not worked as well as they did before the trial is

:32:02. > :32:06.back at home. I have hit the border couple of times. It has not been

:32:07. > :32:15.great. It has just been hard to get through each session. But in the

:32:16. > :32:24.competition, they didn't hurt. You have hinted at retirement. Is this

:32:25. > :32:30.the end of your diving career? I am just going to take tonight. I'm

:32:31. > :32:36.going to go back home a rethink, see what happens. Lots of people are

:32:37. > :32:41.very proud of you, Sarah. Tonia, European champion. You guys have won

:32:42. > :32:44.medals at Commonwealth is back, at Europeans, at World Cups. You have

:32:45. > :32:50.done a phenomenal amount for the sport. You must be proud. I am

:32:51. > :32:55.proud, and I am proud of Tonia for coming fifth today. The medal is not

:32:56. > :33:00.out of reach. You fly the flag for young women. As a sports fan, thank

:33:01. > :33:04.you for all you have done. She should be proud. And a timely

:33:05. > :33:07.reminder, as we see Sarah Barrow upset at what happened in the diving

:33:08. > :33:13.preliminary, it is about getting inspired. These Olympic Games do it

:33:14. > :33:17.for so many people. We were hearing about Adam Peaty, who won the first

:33:18. > :33:22.gold medal of these Games. It was Adam Peaty four years ago who was

:33:23. > :33:26.seeing an old schoolmate of his competing at London in 2012. That

:33:27. > :33:29.gave him the kick up the backside he needed to get back into training and

:33:30. > :33:33.sort himself out to come here and have such an amazing Games not only

:33:34. > :33:40.for himself, but for his family and Team GB. Via the BBC website, you

:33:41. > :33:45.can go to the Get Inspired site. Through there, you can access any of

:33:46. > :33:50.the clubs that are playing an Olympic sport where you can compete

:33:51. > :33:54.in some of the sports. We have had lots of people enquiring about

:33:55. > :34:00.sailing, rugby sevens, taekwondo. That is a really good facility. It

:34:01. > :34:04.might be for you or for your kids. It might be about finding the next

:34:05. > :34:09.generation of Olympians. There aren't genuinely people watching now

:34:10. > :34:12.on BBC Four, I know we are having a bit of fun with things going on on

:34:13. > :34:17.the beach, but there are people watching now who four years down the

:34:18. > :34:21.line might be Olympians themselves, and that is genuinely inspiring.

:34:22. > :34:25.That is why the Get Inspired section of the BBC website is a great place

:34:26. > :34:29.to go. If you are watching and thinking, I want to have a go at

:34:30. > :34:33.that. We turn our attention to taekwondo now, because over the next

:34:34. > :34:37.few days, there are some real Team GB people you should be looking out

:34:38. > :34:41.for. Jade Jones was the gold medallist and champion in the

:34:42. > :34:45.Olympics from four years ago in London. She starts the defence of

:34:46. > :34:51.that total at 2.30 tomorrow. She is under the 57 kilo category. She

:34:52. > :34:56.takes on the Moroccan. She is the overwhelming favourite to defend the

:34:57. > :35:00.title she won four years ago. Her housemate fights in the heavyweight

:35:01. > :35:03.category on Saturday. She has a great chance as well. She is the

:35:04. > :35:09.current world and European champion. Hopefully, she can add an Olympic

:35:10. > :35:14.title to that. And the winner of the bronze in London four years ago, he

:35:15. > :35:17.fights on Friday. None of those are in action tonight, but we are going

:35:18. > :35:24.to bring you one of the semifinals from a different weight category,

:35:25. > :35:30.the under 49 kilo category. We are going to see Mexico take on Serbia.

:35:31. > :35:43.Before we see that, let's give you a quick guide to how taekwondo works.

:35:44. > :35:47.Taekwondo originate in Korea and combines combat and self-defence

:35:48. > :35:51.techniques. It became a fully fledged Olympic sport in Sydney in

:35:52. > :35:56.2000. Each contest has three rounds of two minutes and a competitor can

:35:57. > :36:00.win on points or if their opponent is unable to continue. Points are

:36:01. > :36:05.awarded for permitted, accurate and powerful blows to the opponent's had

:36:06. > :36:08.an body. Attacks to the body can be made using a fist or foot, but an

:36:09. > :36:13.athlete can only use their feet to strike the area above the collar

:36:14. > :36:16.bone. Punches to the head and attacks to the spine are not

:36:17. > :36:20.allowed. The only techniques permitted our kits ready athlete

:36:21. > :36:23.uses the area of the foot below the ankle, and punches, where the

:36:24. > :36:28.athlete uses the knuckle part of a tightly clenched fist. Scoring

:36:29. > :36:31.differs depending on where or how an athlete has attacked. One point is

:36:32. > :36:36.awarded for a valid attack to the body protector, but if the attack is

:36:37. > :36:39.turning or reverse kick to the body, it is worth three points. An athlete

:36:40. > :36:44.will receive three points for illegal kick to the head, and if it

:36:45. > :36:47.is a turning kick, it achieves the maximum four points. After the three

:36:48. > :36:52.rounds, the competitor with the most points wins the match, but in the

:36:53. > :36:55.event of a tie, a golden point over time round is held in which the

:36:56. > :36:58.first athlete to register a point wins the contest.

:36:59. > :37:13.So let's go to the Carioca Arena 3 in Rio and the semifinal in the

:37:14. > :37:18.under 49 kilo category. COMMENTATOR: Here comes Itzel

:37:19. > :37:24.Bastidas, looking confident. She has had a taster of what is to come. I

:37:25. > :37:32.think she will be coming out all guns blazing. Let's see how she

:37:33. > :37:41.fares against Serbia's Tijana Bogdanovic. Tijana Bogdanovic looks

:37:42. > :37:45.much more composed. I was impressed with her focus in her previous

:37:46. > :37:51.fight. She didn't let the challenge of faze her. What a challenge it was

:37:52. > :37:56.as well. That was an incredible fight. It looks like she is the more

:37:57. > :38:07.focused. But every athlete prepares in their own way, so don't

:38:08. > :38:13.underestimate Itzel Bastidas. And she will not be underestimating

:38:14. > :38:30.Bogdanovic by any means. The referee is getting things ready to rumble.

:38:31. > :38:41.It has been bubbling away nicely. And the super young Serb, Tijana

:38:42. > :38:47.Bogdanovic. Making sure the helmet is securely on. You don't want it

:38:48. > :38:52.sticking up to high. Often with athletes with longer hair as well,

:38:53. > :38:59.that does push the head guard up even further. But all the protective

:39:00. > :39:07.equipment is in place. Bogdanovic tries to flick a head shot up. So

:39:08. > :39:13.flexible and so fast. Bogdanovic is looking down slightly. Some of the

:39:14. > :39:17.athletes have almost been looking towards their opponent's eyes. You

:39:18. > :39:21.cannot for a second take your eye off the legs. That is where most of

:39:22. > :39:26.the moves will come from. You make an interesting point in terms of

:39:27. > :39:31.athletes liking to look eye to eye, some at the shoulders, some at the

:39:32. > :39:41.waist. But as you said, you have got to watch the feat. Both ladies are

:39:42. > :39:53.focused here, in this first round. Almost there from Bogdanovic. She

:39:54. > :40:04.went for the head shot. Bogdanovic hopping forward.

:40:05. > :40:18.Both fighters seem to have the measure of one another.

:40:19. > :40:33.The crowd cheering on the Mexican, who almost land they had shot.

:40:34. > :40:42.A little power gauges appearing on the bottom of your screen. If you

:40:43. > :40:46.land with enough power, a sense in the souls of the feet will score

:40:47. > :40:53.automatically, but you need impact. It has been a powerful opening. Very

:40:54. > :40:58.impressive, but neither was able to score in the first round. They only

:40:59. > :41:08.have a minute to recover. It is stop-start between rounds. It is a

:41:09. > :41:14.long day for these fighters. We can hear the words of the Serbian coach.

:41:15. > :41:23.It is a very long day. You have two win, compose, fight, recover. Talk

:41:24. > :41:28.me through the way in. What happens? I know in some sports, it is a few

:41:29. > :41:34.hours before, but in taekwondo, it is the day before. Yes, in

:41:35. > :41:40.taekwondo, you get to have a few days of recovery. That is often

:41:41. > :41:46.needed. How much, how many killers do you reckon they have put on since

:41:47. > :41:56.yesterday? Not as many as us in the commentary box! Huge moments in the

:41:57. > :42:04.semifinal of the Olympic Games, final at stake. The Serb,

:42:05. > :42:26.Bogdanovic, is in red. And you know what colour the Mexican is in.

:42:27. > :42:30.When both fighters have one leg in the air, they are able to generate

:42:31. > :42:47.so much power from the back leg. Bogdanovic changing stance, trying

:42:48. > :42:53.to draw her opponent in. And good tactics from the Mexican. There is a

:42:54. > :43:04.clashing of styles at the moment, and indeed legs. It is getting a bit

:43:05. > :43:13.scrappy. They need to maintain that composure.

:43:14. > :43:28.They are scrapping for a spot in the Olympic final. The under 49

:43:29. > :43:32.kilograms contest is very much open. The Chinese champion is out. The

:43:33. > :43:34.Croatian is also out. The Mexican and Serb will know that the draw is

:43:35. > :43:56.opening up nicely. So much at stake. A picture perfect shot. The Serb

:43:57. > :44:02.steals a lovely three points. Talk about timing. That one gives her

:44:03. > :44:14.opponent something to think about going into the final break before

:44:15. > :44:14.the third round. Right on the buzzer,

:44:15. > :44:31.as you say. We see it from the overhead shot. It shows the distance

:44:32. > :44:41.it has to travel. Look at the accuracy, flicking onto the face.

:44:42. > :44:45.Flexibility and force. Just about catches with a big toe, but it is

:44:46. > :44:55.enough for the sensor to make contact. She will be dancing tonight

:44:56. > :45:05.if she can get into an Olympic final. Bastidas, from Mexico, has to

:45:06. > :45:09.produce something big here. Bogdanovic is really composed. Good

:45:10. > :45:18.defence behind that front leg. When you hold your leg up like that, it

:45:19. > :45:27.leaves no space on either side. The Mexican is finding it difficult to

:45:28. > :45:32.find a space. We are going to see the tempo in this round picking up.

:45:33. > :45:36.Bastidas has to find something now. She cannot be content to sit back

:45:37. > :45:44.and allow Bogdanovic to control the fight. You are right, the tempo is

:45:45. > :45:47.important for the Mexican. She has to change stance. She's falling a

:45:48. > :45:58.bit short. Power punch from the American and

:45:59. > :46:15.feedback leg. Blocked by Bogdanovic, not allowing the clean contact. The

:46:16. > :46:18.Olympic Games final coming here. Tijana Bogdanovic slipping back

:46:19. > :46:27.here, avoiding the drop kick from Bastidas. What a battle this is

:46:28. > :46:30.turning out to be. We know things can change quickly, the Mexican will

:46:31. > :46:41.have to do something quickly now. Such an intense workrate all stop --

:46:42. > :46:46.workrate. Great response from Bogdanovic, that's what happens,

:46:47. > :46:51.timing and the perfect counter kick. Perfect timing with 20 seconds left

:46:52. > :46:57.on the clock, Bogdanovic is in a commanding position with a 6-point

:46:58. > :47:05.lead. Serbia have had an Olympic champion. Tijana Bogdanovic taking

:47:06. > :47:12.another headshot to close a fantastic third round. She's into

:47:13. > :47:21.the Olympic Games final. What chance for Serbia winning to repeat that?

:47:22. > :47:29.Bogdanovic, in with a shout, she's into the final. There you go, the

:47:30. > :47:34.first bit of taekwondo action we've shown you from these Games. Day 12

:47:35. > :47:39.and plenty more to come, loads over the next few days and we'll bring

:47:40. > :47:45.you Jade Jones, who is on tomorrow. A bit of an update for those of you

:47:46. > :47:54.who haven't been following the Maria de Sezar hen do saga. She turned up

:47:55. > :47:59.on a hen do and we invited her on, we had a chat and it went bananas

:48:00. > :48:04.and it's been watched, somebody told me, something like 16 million

:48:05. > :48:12.people. She's been doing interviews, her family have been asked, her

:48:13. > :48:18.fiance is and Belo Horizonte. Yesterday, her mother showed up and

:48:19. > :48:22.she gave us a beautiful invitation to the wedding on September 17. She

:48:23. > :48:29.said she would send her husband to say hello and he arrived, Ivan was

:48:30. > :48:34.here a few moments ago. He said his English wasn't good enough to come

:48:35. > :48:39.on TV. I tried to persuade him, he was a lovely man, cycling home. He

:48:40. > :48:44.thanked me for the coverage, his daughter has been excited. He says

:48:45. > :48:49.he has had interview requests and the rest of the family as well, it

:48:50. > :48:54.has been a big story over the last 24 hours, in Brazil as well, the top

:48:55. > :49:00.two on social media, in all of the papers. American journalists have

:49:01. > :49:05.been ringing up the family as well. The bottom of the story is that fail

:49:06. > :49:12.a nice family, she was having a hen do and has become a part of the

:49:13. > :49:20.magic -- they are a nice family. Hold on, right on cue, the binmen

:49:21. > :49:27.are back. Come on, boys, yes! You know it makes sense. Copacabinmen,

:49:28. > :49:32.what a magnificent job they do. They've been the stars of our

:49:33. > :49:36.coverage on BBC Four. Antony Worrall Thompson is here as well, this is

:49:37. > :49:42.like Ghostbusters when they cross the stream is! He's just going to

:49:43. > :49:50.come in now, here he is, doing his work. He's been training for nine

:49:51. > :49:54.days straight. What he doesn't realise, so many people in the UK

:49:55. > :49:58.are delighted to see him turn up every night, it puts a smile on

:49:59. > :50:02.their faces and perhaps without knowing it he has been the real

:50:03. > :50:07.superstar of our coverage. We have asked him for an interview but he

:50:08. > :50:15.says he is just here to interview and he says that his name is

:50:16. > :50:19.Raphael. Who knows? Jade Jones, we said that she won the Gold Medal and

:50:20. > :50:21.she is the favourite to defend that title. Before the Olympics we got a

:50:22. > :50:37.word with her. COMMENTATOR: You little beauty! The

:50:38. > :50:42.teenage kicking superstar from North Wales is the Olympic champion.

:50:43. > :50:57.That's it, the well champion. Is a lot of what you do today trying

:50:58. > :51:04.to programme the subconscious so that anything that happens, you can

:51:05. > :51:10.react? Yeah definitely, it is a totally new system, we haven't been

:51:11. > :51:14.used to going that way, it is harder to score. Going high on the punches,

:51:15. > :51:23.we've had to completely change our game. I watched you train, sparring,

:51:24. > :51:28.hitting each other, defending with pads, now I want to go to your house

:51:29. > :51:37.because you are housemates, you lived together, you are friends. Is

:51:38. > :51:43.that all right? Yeah. How is it, living together because you have

:51:44. > :51:48.literally come from a session? It is good that we are different, if it

:51:49. > :51:55.was a house of 57s I wouldn't get too close because they are opposite

:51:56. > :52:05.ends of the weight we can help each other out. It is just you two here?

:52:06. > :52:07.Yeah. The question is, why do you have two fridges? She is the

:52:08. > :52:20.heavyweight! LAUGHTER I can see you are definitely focused

:52:21. > :52:27.on Rio, lots of food. Can I see where you chill out? Jade, four

:52:28. > :52:33.years ago, London 2012, Olympic champion, did you expect that? It

:52:34. > :52:40.was like the journey going to the Olympics, it was fast, I came to the

:52:41. > :52:45.academy in 2010, only two years before and no one expected me to go

:52:46. > :52:50.to the Olympics. It went so fast and six months ago I was picked and I

:52:51. > :52:55.gave everything I had in training and I believed I could win, I was

:52:56. > :53:02.going there to win. But when I did it I felt a bit lost, so much

:53:03. > :53:09.pressure, I felt so lost. But now I'm in a good place, I'm just trying

:53:10. > :53:15.to get to do it again, really. Have you had to try and fall back in love

:53:16. > :53:20.with taekwondo? Yeah definitely. There are times, there is a hard

:53:21. > :53:27.loss, you don't want to do it any more, it is so hard and I'm not

:53:28. > :53:32.enjoying it. But I go back to why I did it as a kid, I love taekwondo

:53:33. > :53:37.and I wanted to win. You don't know why you want to win, you want to

:53:38. > :53:40.win. And Bianca, was it difficult, Jade winning a gold, she is

:53:41. > :53:46.obviously your friend, you are pleased she won but for you, you

:53:47. > :53:51.couldn't compete? It wasn't nice at all. We lived together and I was

:53:52. > :53:59.training with her and the next minute I broke my leg and Jade went

:54:00. > :54:06.and won the Olympics but I can't do nothing about that. It can happen. I

:54:07. > :54:11.can take it one way, I could hate her, but I take it the other way,

:54:12. > :54:17.look at what she's done, I can do the same thing. It feels even more

:54:18. > :54:26.special. This is our chance to both get a gold together. It could be a

:54:27. > :54:32.big few days for the taekwondo housemates. We will show you Jade

:54:33. > :54:38.Jones and Bianca over the next few days. That first semifinal in the 49

:54:39. > :54:49.kilo category. The other semifinal, who else goes through, this is him

:54:50. > :55:00.of South Korea. Let's go back for the second semifinal. COMMENTATOR:

:55:01. > :55:07.What a massive moment for Kim So-hui, the 21-year-old marching

:55:08. > :55:15.into the arena. The semifinal of the under 49 kilograms grouping.

:55:16. > :55:30.Yashmina Aziez, the French fighter. What a force she is. 25-year-old

:55:31. > :55:33.from Lyon. In terms of which of these fighters has the advantage in

:55:34. > :55:44.height, it must go to Yashmina Aziez. 5'8" compared to five feet

:55:45. > :55:49.five, Kim. We are looking at a three inch difference, about three

:55:50. > :55:55.centimetres. Fairly substantial. It may play a part. It will definitely

:55:56. > :56:00.play a part, as we've seen so far. Who's going to stand the tallest in

:56:01. > :56:09.this battle? Yashmina Aziez. Her coach there. Conrad Jenkins, the man

:56:10. > :56:15.in the middle, from Jamaica. I think this is a gym in this competition.

:56:16. > :56:24.The first day of taekwondo in Rio. -- this is a tremendous competition.

:56:25. > :56:29.Both of these women mean business, the final is at stake. Kim So-hui is

:56:30. > :56:40.in blue and Yashmina Aziez, her French opponent, front and centre.

:56:41. > :56:48.Kim So-hui is much quicker off the mark and good footwork. Both

:56:49. > :56:54.fighters getting the measure, working out the distance. The first

:56:55. > :57:04.attack coming from Yashmina Aziez of France.

:57:05. > :57:15.Kim So-hui is being very patient. As you said, the first attack. The

:57:16. > :57:27.footwork, so ballistic and athletic. -- balletic. Good fake as well,

:57:28. > :57:36.pretending to move. The Korean is so adept at changing the timing of the

:57:37. > :57:41.opponent by faking. Aziez missing. Kim coming in a bit more at the

:57:42. > :57:46.moment, I would like to see. Not challenging at all, she is waiting,

:57:47. > :57:50.looking for the opportunity. The shorter of the two, Kim So-hui would

:57:51. > :57:54.like to work from the close distance, so faking, trying to draw

:57:55. > :58:03.the taller fighter. A good opening so far for Aziez. A big occasion,

:58:04. > :58:13.the Olympic semifinal. Both fighters leaning back. It is Kim So-hui's

:58:14. > :58:20.footwork and her faking that is putting the pressure on Aziez who

:58:21. > :58:25.has worked the harder. Kim just staying far enough back out of

:58:26. > :58:32.range, looking to avoid any punishing kicks. The master of

:58:33. > :58:38.distance, Kim So-hui. Nothing to separate them on the scoreboard.

:58:39. > :58:42.Clash of styles there. I feel like Kim didn't really get into the first

:58:43. > :58:47.round. She's going to need to issue is going to score some points. Aziez

:58:48. > :59:17.is the one who was looking for the opportunity.

:59:18. > :59:31.Play to your strengths, advertising there. The French contingent, they

:59:32. > :59:35.have something to cheer about. Kim So-hui, so patient and calm come on

:59:36. > :59:40.the back foot. What will she produce here in the second round of the

:59:41. > :59:47.under 49 kilogram semifinal? Faking first and footwork burst, the style

:59:48. > :59:59.of the Korean. Aziez trying to come forward. The kick was well blocked.

:00:00. > :00:05.-- footwork first. Kim is trying to get inside, to get a bit closer.

:00:06. > :00:13.Trying to find her range. She isn't being allowed in very much. Aziez

:00:14. > :00:21.has the longer limbs, keeping Kim So-hui on the back foot. Intense

:00:22. > :00:30.battle so far. A battle for territory. Kim So-hui firing in a

:00:31. > :00:31.little turning kick. Eyes wide from Aziez, she's having to focus

:00:32. > :00:38.resolutely here. Olympic final at stake, no one wants

:00:39. > :01:09.to make a mistake. Difficult for Kim So-hui now to get

:01:10. > :01:17.onto the front foot. An understandable impasse here. The

:01:18. > :01:22.Olympic Games final beckons. Good footwork from Kim So-hui. Good

:01:23. > :01:49.response from Aziez. So close. Aziez is beginning to miss a few

:01:50. > :01:56.here. You have to wonder whether this work by Kim, who is just moving

:01:57. > :02:01.backwards and forwards, leaves as is doing all the hard work. She is now

:02:02. > :02:07.the more fatigued fighter. Absolutely. Kim So-hui is happy to

:02:08. > :02:13.put the pressure on and draw out the response from Aziez. For that

:02:14. > :02:17.reason, she has found that back leg turning kick on two occasions.

:02:18. > :02:28.Hasn't found the scoreboard, but getting closer. As you say, much

:02:29. > :02:42.management is so crucial, using that energy. But we know Aziez has the

:02:43. > :02:51.flexibility. Last bit of encouragement both coaches.

:02:52. > :03:05.Who is going to be on the podium later? So much to be decided here.

:03:06. > :03:08.Do you think they will be thinking about the final already, or are they

:03:09. > :03:29.focused on winning this? Kim So-hui again going back to that

:03:30. > :03:39.patient style, try to shut down the moment.

:03:40. > :03:48.They are cancelling each other out at the moment. A mistake from Aziez

:03:49. > :04:13.almost left the door open. You mentioned the energy expended by

:04:14. > :04:17.Aziez. She is under pressure. There is the back leg turning click again.

:04:18. > :04:32.-- turning click. A consistent pattern emerging. There

:04:33. > :04:37.is a sudden death round. Whoever scored first would win, but you

:04:38. > :04:47.would fancy the same here as we get into the last stages. The time is

:04:48. > :04:59.ticking away here. Who is going to commit? They will

:05:00. > :05:09.have two commit to a sudden death round now. Whoever scores the first

:05:10. > :05:13.point is into the Olympic final. Change of tactics now in terms of

:05:14. > :05:19.the type of kick they choose to go for. It is very much on the length

:05:20. > :05:22.of kick. Every kick is a different length and covers a different

:05:23. > :05:27.distance. You have to pick the right one. Kim So-hui has been defensive

:05:28. > :05:33.and hesitant. Does she go for it now? Does she stick or twist? Aziez

:05:34. > :05:44.has the flexibility. Don't discount the punches as well. Conrad Jenkins

:05:45. > :05:54.separates them. Gold medal territory now. Well blocked by Kim So-hui in

:05:55. > :06:16.blue. Kim So-hui almost scored. Lovely

:06:17. > :06:21.block from Yashmina Aziez, the French fighter. This has been so

:06:22. > :06:33.difficult to separate the two of them.

:06:34. > :06:38.As is really putting on the pressure now. Kim So-hui is beginning to rock

:06:39. > :06:57.under the pressure. Back leg turning kick from Kim

:06:58. > :07:08.So-hui, and she is into the Olympic Games final. Composure, patients and

:07:09. > :07:12.precision. That little power shot underneath the guard. Excellent from

:07:13. > :07:17.Kim So-hui. She played a very patient waiting game, and it paid

:07:18. > :07:21.off. There you go. More taekwondo for you

:07:22. > :07:25.over the next few days on BBC Four. In a moment, we shall be live at the

:07:26. > :07:29.table tennis. We promised you some amazing action, China taking on

:07:30. > :07:36.Japan in a gold medal match for the men's team event. They play five

:07:37. > :07:40.different matches across the different doubles and singles. We

:07:41. > :07:45.will join them shortly. But we have another guest, live in the beach

:07:46. > :07:50.bureau on BBC Four. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to

:07:51. > :07:55.Deb Murray, Samantha Murray's mum. Those of you who remember 2012,

:07:56. > :07:59.Samantha Murray was one of our pent athletes who won silver four years

:08:00. > :08:02.ago, and she starts the modern pentathlon tomorrow. Let's get an

:08:03. > :08:09.insight into the mother's point of view. How are you feeling before the

:08:10. > :08:13.first of a few big day tomorrow? Very excited and very proud, full of

:08:14. > :08:18.anticipation. We can't wait to see what will happen. Anything can

:08:19. > :08:24.happen in pentathlon. It is such an unpredictable sport. You have the

:08:25. > :08:32.unknown element of the horses, and you have so many competitors, whose

:08:33. > :08:38.form can vary from day to day depending on many different aspects.

:08:39. > :08:46.So it is a really nerve-wracking experience. We can take you back to

:08:47. > :08:50.four years ago. This was when your daughter crossed the line four years

:08:51. > :08:54.ago for the silver. You will come into shot in a minute for a hug.

:08:55. > :09:01.What if that mother- daughter moment like? In London as well, it must

:09:02. > :09:10.have been incredible. It was just amazing. In front of a home crowd

:09:11. > :09:15.are so many spectators and so much support, I don't think you could

:09:16. > :09:22.ever match that again. Here in Rio, I know there have been issues. Yes,

:09:23. > :09:25.people have been watching and saying, why are people not going to

:09:26. > :09:30.the events? We have been speaking about this a lot to some locals.

:09:31. > :09:34.There are various reasons. One is the cost of the tickets. One is the

:09:35. > :09:39.fact that if it is not football, it is hard to get Brazilians enthused

:09:40. > :09:42.about things, and the locals have also told us that sometimes, we have

:09:43. > :09:46.a very British viewpoint on these things. Here, if Brazilians feel

:09:47. > :09:50.they are not going to win, they are not interested. It is all those

:09:51. > :09:56.things combined. That could be why some events have not been well

:09:57. > :10:00.attended. It might be interesting tomorrow, because Marquez, who won

:10:01. > :10:05.the bronze in London, is a strong contender. So the Brazilians may get

:10:06. > :10:09.behind her. We have been talking a lot about getting the next

:10:10. > :10:14.generation into things. Remind us of how the modern pentathlon works. The

:10:15. > :10:22.fencing is the first event, which starts tomorrow. Yes, the fencing is

:10:23. > :10:28.tomorrow. And the competitor, there are 36 competitors and they all fans

:10:29. > :10:33.each other. Each hit the point. Then you accumulate points throughout the

:10:34. > :10:38.rest of the day. Then you go on the swim. Ordinarily, the five events

:10:39. > :10:43.are in day, but in Rio, because of the lighting and the length of the

:10:44. > :10:50.event, they put the fencing on one day and the rest of the elements on

:10:51. > :10:55.the Friday. On Friday, you carry on with the swim, 200 metres freestyle.

:10:56. > :11:01.Samantha is a strong swimmer, so we are hoping for a good swim, possibly

:11:02. > :11:09.an Olympic record. We will have to see. A bit of pressure! After the

:11:10. > :11:15.swimming, you go onto the riding. And it is unknown horse. It is 12

:11:16. > :11:21.jumps. You get 20 minutes to warm up. During that warm-up, you can

:11:22. > :11:25.jump the horse four times, and that's it. So anyone who knows about

:11:26. > :11:30.horses knows that that is quite a challenge and you have to use a lot

:11:31. > :11:35.of skill. We have seen Charlotte Dujardin, and she has had a long

:11:36. > :11:38.term relationship with Valegro. They know the horse and the horse feels

:11:39. > :11:44.safe, which helps when you are trying to get that horse to do the

:11:45. > :11:47.business. Absolutely, it is a completely different relationship.

:11:48. > :11:53.You have the bond with the horse very quickly and make judgments. So

:11:54. > :11:58.it is skilful and tactical. Once you have completed your eventing round,

:11:59. > :12:03.you then go onto the combined run shoot event. The run shoot event is

:12:04. > :12:10.shooting with a laser pistol. It used to be an actual air pistol in

:12:11. > :12:15.the olden days. But now it is a laser pistol. That is to encourage

:12:16. > :12:24.grassroots participation. Obviously, a laser pistol is much safer. And it

:12:25. > :12:30.is good fun. So you come the 300 metre run with the laser pistol

:12:31. > :12:36.shooting. -- you combine them. You visit the shooting range four times

:12:37. > :12:40.in the course of your three K run. And your heart rate increases. That

:12:41. > :12:45.is the skill, you have do make your heart rate slowed as you approach

:12:46. > :12:50.the shooting range. I am amazed at how Samantha got into this. Was

:12:51. > :12:54.anyone in your family involved? We have been talking about getting into

:12:55. > :12:59.sport. How do you think, today I am going to be a modern pentathlete?

:13:00. > :13:04.Modern pad tabs on is a very quirky sport, but it is such good fun

:13:05. > :13:09.because it is so varied -- modern pentathlon. Sam was always a very

:13:10. > :13:13.active child. I am sure lots of people have active children at home.

:13:14. > :13:21.She used to go to running club and swimming club. And her grandma kept

:13:22. > :13:29.ponies, so she always messed about with ponies. Somebody approached her

:13:30. > :13:37.at a talent day and said you can run and swim really well. You know how

:13:38. > :13:41.to ride. Why not take up the other elements of fencing and shooting,

:13:42. > :13:46.and you could be a modern pentathlete? And it was at the time

:13:47. > :13:49.when Stacy Cook had just won gold in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics, which

:13:50. > :13:56.was the first time women had been involved in the sport. And Sam went

:13:57. > :14:02.along to this presentation and saw a poster of this defeat cook. She had

:14:03. > :14:09.the presentation and said, I want to be like that lady. She looks

:14:10. > :14:14.amazing. Steffi Cook is now part of the commentary for these Games.

:14:15. > :14:21.Exactly, so for Sam to meet her hero has been great. You don't decide

:14:22. > :14:25.you're going to be in pentathlon, it is something you acquire the skills

:14:26. > :14:29.to become. If you are a good runner and swimmer, look at the other

:14:30. > :14:34.disciplines, which are very technical, and you could also be a

:14:35. > :14:40.modern pentathlete. I was saying to my husband Tom Samantha's life as an

:14:41. > :14:44.athlete has taken her all over the world and you get to come to amazing

:14:45. > :14:50.places like this, whether beach is like sugar macro we have spent a lot

:14:51. > :14:54.of time on the beach, we know how good it is! The reason it is so

:14:55. > :15:00.smooth is because of the Beachcomber, but I will explain that

:15:01. > :15:04.later. It is an amazing place. So you have a fantastic life where you

:15:05. > :15:08.train as an athlete, you do varied sports that you enjoy and you get to

:15:09. > :15:21.meet wonderful people like yourself. Steady on! Let me ask you about the

:15:22. > :15:31.night before. Who feels it more on a night like to make? The competition

:15:32. > :15:37.starts at two o'clock, ten in the morning in Rio. I am all right now,

:15:38. > :15:42.but tomorrow I will probably be a total wreck. In London, we got to

:15:43. > :15:51.the combined event, and I couldn't actually watch. I was in the stadium

:15:52. > :15:57.and I was crouched on the floor. I couldn't look. And one of Sam's

:15:58. > :15:59.friends who was with her said to me, get up, she's about to win the

:16:00. > :16:11.silver medal! And made me watch. It is great because you are

:16:12. > :16:18.wondering passed, your husband came over and said, that is the mother of

:16:19. > :16:24.Samantha Murray. Pub quiz, she was the last Team GB medallist at the

:16:25. > :16:29.London Games, number 65 out of 65. That's right, a Silver Medal. Let's

:16:30. > :16:35.say hello to Steve as well. He's sorting his hair out. Nice to see

:16:36. > :16:42.you, I am Dan, this is your wife! From your perspective, is it a

:16:43. > :16:46.concern, are you cool, can you watch? Over the years, Debra has put

:16:47. > :16:54.the hard work in, clearly with Samantha. Yes, stand there and see

:16:55. > :17:02.what happens. Hope you have a fantastic day tomorrow and the day

:17:03. > :17:06.after, enjoy the fencing. A big clap to our Olympic parents. People

:17:07. > :17:12.probably think you are Gold Medal winners. I will milk it! Thank you

:17:13. > :17:19.and all the best two Samantha, we'll have to make sure that we cover it

:17:20. > :17:25.properly. Thank you so much. Samantha Murray will go tomorrow.

:17:26. > :17:29.10pm here, to lay your time, the first event of the modern

:17:30. > :17:36.pentathlon. Silver in London and she's had some good years, world

:17:37. > :17:41.champion in 2014 and in 2016 as part of Team GB she was the world silver

:17:42. > :17:46.medallist. The pedigree is there and hopefully she gets in the medals.

:17:47. > :17:52.Shall we go to some table tennis? This is the men's team Gold Medal

:17:53. > :17:57.matches, that is the best way to describe it, two of the great

:17:58. > :18:14.nations, China against Japan. China winning the first match, the best of

:18:15. > :18:23.five, we will join it now. Mizutani from Japan against his Chinese

:18:24. > :18:34.opponent. Match two. Let's join our commentary team. COMMENTATOR:

:18:35. > :18:36.Certainly looks like it, and Mizutani, the opposite, a lot of

:18:37. > :19:00.positive body language from him. On his feet, applauding Mizutani.

:19:01. > :19:07.Between them they've got the tactics right here. The manner in which

:19:08. > :19:16.Mizutani is playing, not afraid to have a go, topspin against topspin

:19:17. > :19:20.and he didn't back off. He had a weakness previously, allowing his

:19:21. > :19:21.opponent to dominate but here, he's holding his ground a lot more.

:19:22. > :19:41.Slugging it out with Xu Xin. He hasn't missed very many. High

:19:42. > :19:51.level of aggression that he's been playing with. Xu Xin just spinning

:19:52. > :19:54.the ball the bit more, not quite as fast as in the previous point,

:19:55. > :20:17.slowing it down, heavy topspin. Nice couple of points, giving Xu Xin

:20:18. > :20:41.a bit more hope in this second game. Mizutani has gone off the boil a

:20:42. > :20:46.little bit. Using the reverse backhand really well, brushing up

:20:47. > :21:01.the ball. The lead now, for Mizutani, down to one point.

:21:02. > :21:09.Good job, into the body. What a comeback here from Xu Xin. Drawing

:21:10. > :21:43.level, 5-5. Just missing the forehand topspin,

:21:44. > :21:49.Mizutani. The Chinese are so mentally tough, you look at their

:21:50. > :21:51.fitness and skill levels. 5-2 down, a lot of people would have lost

:21:52. > :22:11.confidence, but Xu Xin... That's a nice stroke back. Stopping

:22:12. > :22:20.what was a haemorrhage of points against him.

:22:21. > :22:26.After losing five in a row, coming up with that to level it at 6-6

:22:27. > :22:48.after having taken the first game. Good return of serve, reading the

:22:49. > :22:54.spin and pushing it back ever so tight. Mizutani tried to take

:22:55. > :23:14.initiative but it was such a good return, very difficult for him.

:23:15. > :23:23.That was a great serve, the second bounce was going to be around the

:23:24. > :23:31.baseline, Xu Xin didn't know whether to play long. In the end he has to

:23:32. > :23:36.flick over the table. Mizutani coming in with the forehand topspin

:23:37. > :24:09.down the line. Close one to call, 7-7.

:24:10. > :24:18.That was such an important point for Mizutani.

:24:19. > :24:30.He let it drop too long. Time-out. Clearly this isn't anything to do

:24:31. > :24:36.with momentum because there is no momentum in Xu Xin's favour at the

:24:37. > :24:39.moment, he clearly wants to talk to him about tactics and how to get in

:24:40. > :24:59.front of the topspin. Interesting time to call this.

:25:00. > :25:03.Perhaps it's because Mizutani was able to seal the opening game in a

:25:04. > :25:13.tight point for point type situation. To be honest, it's a

:25:14. > :25:18.relaxed and -- it's a reflection that the coach believes this is in

:25:19. > :25:28.doubt. Why else would he have called the time-out? There's no momentum.

:25:29. > :25:29.He just wants to reinforce the importance of play, how he can

:25:30. > :25:47.dominate the rally. Returning from the time-out. Very

:25:48. > :25:53.tight stages of the second game. Mizutani of Japan, having taken the

:25:54. > :26:09.first, now with a one point fatwa and teach -- one point and --

:26:10. > :26:13.advantage. That was a peach of a return, the placement was

:26:14. > :26:18.exceptional. Outright winner on the return of serve. Xu Xin again going

:26:19. > :26:26.around the backhand to play his forehand. Mizutani, two points from

:26:27. > :26:47.taking the game. Reverse backhand, the return of

:26:48. > :26:57.serve setting up the point that Xu Xin. Of course it will be Xu Xin to

:26:58. > :27:08.serves at the end of the game. Very big point coming up now.

:27:09. > :27:18.What a response from Xu Xin. You must admire how positively they are

:27:19. > :27:25.playing. This catches the edge of the table, you can see. Catching the

:27:26. > :27:33.edge of the table. He acknowledges his good fortune. By the finest of

:27:34. > :27:57.margins it is 9-9. He did well, Mizutani, returning the

:27:58. > :28:04.serve well, the strong forehand topspin, forcing Xu Xin away from

:28:05. > :28:33.the table and now we have game point for the 2-0 lead for Japan.

:28:34. > :28:47.That is terrific play from Mizutani. 11-9, he clinches the second game,

:28:48. > :28:54.it is 2-0. Really holding his nerve in the closing stages of the second

:28:55. > :29:01.game. Playing aggressively, a lot of self belief. There is the

:29:02. > :29:21.celebration, going to the 2-0 lead. The Japanese coach, he is delighted.

:29:22. > :29:27.Questions will be asked of Xu Xin. Mizutani could be the thorn in the

:29:28. > :29:31.side of the Chinese team. I would love to see the game between

:29:32. > :29:37.Mizutani and Ma Long, if we get to that stop very impressive

:29:38. > :30:44.performance by the 27-year-old. And the edge goes to Xu Xin. Hasn't

:30:45. > :30:53.had a lot of luck in this match. It has gone against him, but this time

:30:54. > :30:55.he gets it. It was two reverse backhand topspin 's that have won

:30:56. > :31:09.him the first two points. Super defence from Xu Xin, way back

:31:10. > :31:49.from the table. Heavy topspin from Xu Xin, Mizutani

:31:50. > :31:51.not getting his racket over the top. Got to get the bat over the ball to

:31:52. > :32:17.compensate for the spin. This time, good fortune favours Xu

:32:18. > :32:21.Xin. He was at full stretch there. Somehow managed to get his bat on

:32:22. > :32:26.the ball and then good fortune stepped in as the ball trickled over

:32:27. > :32:29.the net. Look at that, he is almost diving, looks like a goalkeeper

:32:30. > :32:38.going to save a penalty. Quite a turnaround in this third

:32:39. > :33:14.game. Two reverse backhand topspin --

:33:15. > :33:40.topspins. A good push from Mizutani. It is not

:33:41. > :33:42.often you see a push going as fast as that one. Took Xu Xin by

:33:43. > :34:09.surprise. The ball was a bit lower for Xu Xin.

:34:10. > :34:30.We have the Chinese women's team down, supporting the men.

:34:31. > :34:41.A bit of cat and mouse at the beginning of the point. Xu Xin

:34:42. > :34:56.launches into his trademark shot, overhit it.

:34:57. > :35:04.Top edge of the racket, slightly mistimed it. It looks like a

:35:05. > :35:09.terrible mess when the ball flies off, but it is just a fraction of a

:35:10. > :35:23.second out in the timing. The ball hits the top of the racket.

:35:24. > :35:32.A very different game, this one. The other two were very close, point for

:35:33. > :35:55.point. But Xu Xin now has a big lead.

:35:56. > :36:05.Rapid-fire rally, setting up game points for Xu Xin to get one game

:36:06. > :36:20.back. Xu Xin taking the third game.

:36:21. > :37:08.Japan's Mizutani leading 2-1. Best-of-5 matches. Interesting in

:37:09. > :37:12.that third game. Xu Xin got off to the start, won the first three or

:37:13. > :37:17.four points, and then it was one-way traffic. Mizutani has to forget

:37:18. > :37:21.about that third game and get back to how he played in the first two

:37:22. > :37:33.games. I am sure that is what the coach is telling him. The start of

:37:34. > :37:44.the fourth game is all important for both players. Xu Xin, of course, has

:37:45. > :37:50.to win the next two games. Mizutani just needs one of them. I thought Xu

:37:51. > :37:55.Xin played his best game of the three but arguably, Mizutani took

:37:56. > :37:58.pressure off of it. He wandered away from the table and didn't open the

:37:59. > :38:02.strongly as he did in the first two games. But I am sure the coach will

:38:03. > :38:42.be advising him accordingly. So much movement on that ball. It is

:38:43. > :38:54.a blow to Xu Xin to lose a point like that.

:38:55. > :39:20.Xu Xin returning with a reverse backhand topspin. Very skilful.

:39:21. > :39:37.Brilliant. First topspin on the diagonal. Mizutani whips it down the

:39:38. > :39:52.line. Great tactical play. In terms of that third game,

:39:53. > :40:00.Mizutani seemed to have a little lapse. He has been brilliant at many

:40:01. > :40:05.stages throughout this match. Even though he lost the point, I still

:40:06. > :40:10.felt he was trying to be positive. In the third game, I thought he held

:40:11. > :40:15.back a bit and played by his very high standards just a fraction

:40:16. > :40:20.negative. That is perfect, that is what he has to do. He has to be

:40:21. > :40:43.strong behind the service, keep the pressure on Xu Xin.

:40:44. > :40:49.The other interesting thing psychologically, if Mizutani can

:40:50. > :40:53.pull off this win, it would be remarkable. But then Xu Xin would

:40:54. > :40:58.have to go into the doubles with a defeat on his mind. It may unsettle

:40:59. > :41:03.the Chinese doubles pair. Here we are, talking about China being

:41:04. > :41:09.almost unbeatable, and Japan now find themselves in a very healthy

:41:10. > :41:16.situation. So much pressure on Xu Xin, with the immense responsibility

:41:17. > :41:24.of playing this singles. Didn't play in the singles event here at the

:41:25. > :41:44.Olympics. Started the tournament in this team event.

:41:45. > :41:59.Coming up with the goods in that point. Great slow motion of that

:42:00. > :42:17.forehand topspin. Good footwork to get around the backhand.

:42:18. > :42:33.A bit of good fortune for Xu Xin. Just caught the top of the net,

:42:34. > :42:51.trickled over. Massive points right here.

:42:52. > :42:59.Mizutani has to match Xu Xin for mental toughness here. I know the

:43:00. > :43:08.Chinese are tough. They have proved it time and time again. Being able

:43:09. > :43:09.to produce those sorts of shots in tight situations, under incredible

:43:10. > :43:32.pressure. You just feel the momentum now has

:43:33. > :43:44.shifted to Xu Xin. I think we are going to have a time-out called. Of

:43:45. > :43:51.course, if Xu Xin wins, then we go into the fifth and final game. That

:43:52. > :43:53.really will be pressure for both players. It is a lot of pressure

:43:54. > :44:09.now. Just a slight acknowledgement from

:44:10. > :44:20.Mizutani. He knows he was a bit fortunate. I suspect overall, the

:44:21. > :44:49.luck has been evenly distributed throughout this match.

:44:50. > :44:58.Oh, my goodness! Total commitment from Mizutani. It was good tactics

:44:59. > :45:06.from the Japanese player. That was the best shot of this match so far.

:45:07. > :45:13.Look at the side spin, taking the ball out even wider to Mizutani's

:45:14. > :45:17.forehand, but Mizutani didn't even bother to try. He was hoping to make

:45:18. > :45:40.a winner on that return. It wasn't to be.

:45:41. > :45:50.Xu Xin holding up under pressure here. Shrug off the shoulders from

:45:51. > :46:07.Mizutani. Trying to loosen up a little bit.

:46:08. > :46:16.Again, Xu Xin in with that rocket forehand topspin down the line.

:46:17. > :46:22.Really responded in this situation, coming up with some of his best

:46:23. > :46:43.play, deep in the fourth game. That's a good backhand. Going under

:46:44. > :46:51.the forehand side to play the backhand. Gives himself a slight

:46:52. > :46:53.lifeline here, but he's three points adrift, Xu Xin, with his final serve

:46:54. > :47:29.in the sequence of two. He was going after it. 9-5, he was

:47:30. > :47:40.up, now it is 9-7 and Mizutani with two serves. What a time to take the

:47:41. > :47:45.points with the Serbs. Two serves. -- serves.

:47:46. > :47:56.The reverse backhand, a lot of wrist going into that shot. Great

:47:57. > :48:19.composure from Xu Xin. Extraordinary effort from Xu Xin.

:48:20. > :48:23.Taking the fourth game, 11th-7, drawing level at 2-2, we will go

:48:24. > :49:19.into a decider. So, what a match. Xu Xin and

:49:20. > :49:26.Mizutani. I think the start of this deciding game is going to be

:49:27. > :49:33.crucial. Of course we must remember that Xu Xin lost the first two

:49:34. > :49:40.Games, 12-10 and 11-9, has won 11-3 and 11-7, so arguably the momentum

:49:41. > :49:44.is with him but it's amazing how many players bring it back to 2-2,

:49:45. > :49:48.you think they are going to run away with it and it doesn't happen. It's

:49:49. > :49:55.about their mental approach to the game. I still think that the

:49:56. > :50:02.gentleman is an -- the gentleman who is on the screen is the favourite.

:50:03. > :50:16.If Mizutani makes a good start, Japan can get back into this final.

:50:17. > :50:24.Good reaction from Xu Xin, after winning the opening point of the

:50:25. > :50:30.fifth and final deciding game. He wants to keep the momentum of having

:50:31. > :50:47.won the last two Games to level the match.

:50:48. > :50:57.Just launched into the backhand topspin. Xu Xin created a point

:50:58. > :51:02.winning situation, creating the rally so that Mizutani was away from

:51:03. > :51:10.the table. Look how far away he is. The backhand topspin. Big point,

:51:11. > :51:11.psychologically keeping him in the fifth and final game in the second

:51:12. > :51:30.match. What defence from Mizutani, early in

:51:31. > :51:41.the rally. But Xu Xin was able to put it away. What Mizutani mustn't

:51:42. > :51:46.think is that he won the previous point away from the table, it was

:51:47. > :51:51.wonderful to see but for every five points like that he's only going to

:51:52. > :51:53.win one out of the five. He can't rely on that, he must get close to

:51:54. > :52:09.the table. Exactly, taking the ball early,

:52:10. > :52:13.putting Xu Xin under a bit of pressure, he missed time the reverse

:52:14. > :52:18.backhand, getting the edge of his bat and look at the scoreboard, 2-2

:52:19. > :52:35.in Games and points, it couldn't be closer.

:52:36. > :52:45.How did Xu Xin stay in that point? If you see the replay, Xu Xin

:52:46. > :52:51.gambled, he ran around the backhand, there he goes, and Mizutani put it

:52:52. > :53:00.there. If he had gone down the line the way he has been doing, he would

:53:01. > :53:05.have won the point. Liu Guoliang, you'd think he was playing in the

:53:06. > :53:11.match! It's the Olympic final, it means everything. Liu Guoliang

:53:12. > :53:27.there, Olympic champion and world champion himself.

:53:28. > :53:35.The players will change ends when the first player makes five points.

:53:36. > :53:39.Xu Xin will be hoping it is at 5-2, it would be a big psychological

:53:40. > :53:46.boost for him to change ends with a 3-point lead. Mizutani needs a

:53:47. > :54:08.couple points in the opening points of the final game.

:54:09. > :54:20.Xu Xin, each point building pressure on Mizutani. Time-out called, 5-2.

:54:21. > :54:26.Xu Xin, the deciding game. 5-2, changing ends, the time-out. I think

:54:27. > :54:31.it's a good call because the momentum is definitely with Xu Xin.

:54:32. > :54:37.So a chance to regroup, take a break. Try and give him the advice

:54:38. > :54:44.that he requires. I think he knows what he has to do. Xu Xin is just a

:54:45. > :54:49.great player. You know what you have to do, but it is sustaining it to

:54:50. > :54:56.win the points, that effort, you can see that the strain is telling.

:54:57. > :55:04.Mizutani is looking a bit at a loss after those two points, looking

:55:05. > :55:08.skyward. Interesting to see Liu Guoliang's reaction to one of those

:55:09. > :55:12.points, he knows that this is a pressure point in the final, he

:55:13. > :55:17.knows that if Xu Xin loses, they will go to the doubles with Xu Xin

:55:18. > :55:23.knowing he has lost his singles. Even though he is 5-2 up, it is a

:55:24. > :55:32.pivotal moment in the final. What an encounter this is. The result is by

:55:33. > :55:44.no means a done deal. Mizutani is trailing 5-2 in the deciding game.

:55:45. > :55:58.Serve drifting long. Xu Xin pounced on it and what a strong forehand

:55:59. > :56:05.topspin return of serve. The body language from Mizutani, talking to

:56:06. > :56:10.himself, looking up, not looking nearly as confident. Four point

:56:11. > :56:15.advantage, Xu Xin. He must focus everything on the next point, not

:56:16. > :56:23.think about the fact that he was 2-0 up. That's a good return, keeping it

:56:24. > :56:34.tight. Xu Xin launched himself into it but it forced the error.

:56:35. > :57:05.This second match is a classic. It has had twists and turns. Are we

:57:06. > :57:12.about to see another? Looked like Mizutani was going to win, 2-0 up,

:57:13. > :57:13.Xu Xin wins the next two, takes the lead and now Mizutani is coming back

:57:14. > :57:28.at him. Tremendous stuff. That was a brave return of serve

:57:29. > :57:33.from Xu Xin. The long post, I was thinking he was going short or the

:57:34. > :57:39.flick. That's probably why I wasn't any good! Grapeshot, the depth, and

:57:40. > :57:52.the reaction from Mizutani says it all. -- great shot.

:57:53. > :58:01.It was the great reversed topspin from Xu Xin and then Mizutani

:58:02. > :58:05.stepped around with the counter forehand topspin. There's the

:58:06. > :58:11.reverse and there is the countertop spent. Mizutani, keeping his focus,

:58:12. > :58:24.trying to play as positively as he can. This can still be won by

:58:25. > :58:28.Mizutani. It's going to be tough. He looks a little bit stressed. You

:58:29. > :58:33.don't see that very often, Liu Guoliang. He's back on his feet, up

:58:34. > :58:56.and down like a jack in the box in the corner.

:58:57. > :59:29.Xu Xin keeping his composure. 8-5 in the deciding game.

:59:30. > :59:42.And the short play won by Mizutani, who now has two serves to come. What

:59:43. > :59:50.a time to take two points with your serves. Levelling the deciding game

:59:51. > :00:10.at 8-8. Can he do it? The first serve is coming up.

:00:11. > :00:15.Good play from Xu Xin, spinning the ball to three times and then he

:00:16. > :00:20.launches the rocket, coming forward with the reaction. Spinning up and

:00:21. > :01:00.then kicks. Good placement into the body of Xu

:01:01. > :01:05.Xin. The problem now for Mizutani, as he has to return the Xu Xin

:01:06. > :01:09.service, interesting to see the servers that Xu Xin will come out

:01:10. > :01:13.with. It will be looking to get a good top-spin behind the serve. I

:01:14. > :01:43.would be surprised to see a long and fast serve, but who knows?

:01:44. > :01:54.What a well-placed top-spin? Into the backhand. Much to the delay --

:01:55. > :02:02.much to the delight of the team in the corner. Lots of movement on that

:02:03. > :02:39.bench. Thrilled to see their man arrived at match points. 10-7.

:02:40. > :02:57.Mizutani, of course, now has his Serbs to come. He needs to be brave

:02:58. > :03:09.and he needs to be positive behind the server.

:03:10. > :03:18.It is all about what he can deliver right here, Mizutani. Two match

:03:19. > :03:42.points. That was a weak return of service. I

:03:43. > :03:46.do not like to say that about a world-class player such as Xu Xin

:03:47. > :03:51.but it looked up and it was mid-table and dispatched into his

:03:52. > :04:17.body. One match point remaining for Xu Xin. Talk about twists and turns.

:04:18. > :04:25.He has done it. He held his ground and stayed close to the table. He

:04:26. > :04:33.played positive table tennis, and he has reaped the reward. Showing the

:04:34. > :04:40.belief out here, Mizutani, staving off match points, staying alive in

:04:41. > :04:50.this match. What you sense is a pivotal match in this final. 2-2,

:04:51. > :05:15.10-10. Spin, top-spin, how clever was that

:05:16. > :05:20.from Mizutani? The ball dropped over the side of that able, he spun up

:05:21. > :05:26.the back of the ball and he brushed and the ball was fizzing with

:05:27. > :05:28.top-spin. After saving match points against him, Mizutani arrives at a

:05:29. > :05:51.match point of his own. He has gone down on his knees.

:05:52. > :06:00.Celebration for Mizutani, pulling off a huge upset here. Tense times

:06:01. > :06:10.at the end of that fifth game, he takes it 12-10 in the decider.

:06:11. > :06:16.Some brilliant table tennis action there and we will return to the

:06:17. > :06:22.gold-medal match with China taking on Japan. When- one so far and the

:06:23. > :06:27.men's double is up next. We are back on the beach. More excitement

:06:28. > :06:31.because the Copaca- binmen are back. Can you see them under the palm

:06:32. > :06:38.trees? Hopefully they will be strolling past us soon. It is guest

:06:39. > :06:48.night on BBC Four. Let me introduce you to Kenny and Andy? Can you tell

:06:49. > :06:56.when they are from? Where'er you originally from? Falkirk. Bathgate.

:06:57. > :07:01.You are wearing a kilt every day, explain why. We wondered what would

:07:02. > :07:05.be more fun, we follow the football as a Tartan Army so we thought we

:07:06. > :07:09.would come here and do it for real and we packed to kilts and steep

:07:10. > :07:16.pairs of boots and 21 T-shirts, one for each day. Yes, we have beachwear

:07:17. > :07:21.and kilts are matters it. How has it gone down in Rio? You do get a few

:07:22. > :07:25.looks here! Even here. The first couple of days it took three or four

:07:26. > :07:28.days to go down because it was photographs all the time but it is

:07:29. > :07:31.great because you are meeting Argentinians in Spanish and French

:07:32. > :07:34.and Japanese and they are getting pictures taken with us and we have

:07:35. > :07:38.pictures taken with them which is great. People watching back at home,

:07:39. > :07:43.there was a lot of talk of empty stadium and people coming because

:07:44. > :07:48.they were concerned the violence and security. You are saying how much

:07:49. > :07:52.you have been enjoying it, you seen of that? None whatsoever. There are

:07:53. > :07:59.places we have been to a decided not to stay very long but you can get

:08:00. > :08:02.that in London so it's not bad. You walk up and down here and there is

:08:03. > :08:10.loads of security and everyone feel safe, I feel safe. Ticket wise, not

:08:11. > :08:18.been great. Talk about the tickets. Amulets have you been to so far? Ten

:08:19. > :08:23.maybe. What's been the highlight? The road cycling is that highlight

:08:24. > :08:27.and we choose the highest in the steepest hill and we were there for

:08:28. > :08:30.the whole nine hours he met all the Spanish fans who were crazy for

:08:31. > :08:33.their cycling and they had flags out and everything and the highlight was

:08:34. > :08:36.running alongside Geraint Thomas in the final lap and shouting at him

:08:37. > :08:40.and motivating him and getting in going and I thought I did a great

:08:41. > :08:44.job and I was told five minutes later that he went round the corner

:08:45. > :08:50.and crashed and I felt really bad and I thought it was my motivation.

:08:51. > :08:53.You got into pumped up! I ran beside Chris Froome in my kilt and he

:08:54. > :09:02.looked as though it wasn't happening. And he asked me how

:09:03. > :09:08.Geraint Hughes was doing and I told him it was second. I run along side

:09:09. > :09:15.Chris Froome only talk to me! That is a pretty special experience. What

:09:16. > :09:22.have you lined up? We have tickets for Saturday night and the Mo Farah

:09:23. > :09:28.race. Hold on, the binmen are back! Nice to see you! Al, they are busy

:09:29. > :09:37.now. There you go! Wheel was get away from the Copaca- binmen. As you

:09:38. > :09:41.well know, these guys are stars. You are saying about tickets and trying

:09:42. > :09:46.to get to events in the next few days. We're going to athletics on

:09:47. > :09:50.Saturday to see Mel as if he can do it again it would be amazing. We

:09:51. > :09:53.will try our best to get tickets for hockey on Friday night but they were

:09:54. > :09:57.sold out on the website but we will keep trying and hopefully we will

:09:58. > :10:01.get them. There is a plan to get them but you are not sure yet. Yes,

:10:02. > :10:05.we did the same with rugby sevens and went on the first day and stayed

:10:06. > :10:09.in the second and went in the afternoon and then we had some GB

:10:10. > :10:14.jackets and we stayed for three to the light and session, told with the

:10:15. > :10:19.team. Security said it was time to go on we said we were waiting for

:10:20. > :10:23.the team and they went off and left our fund an hour later the gates

:10:24. > :10:27.opened and we strolled in and watch the evening session with friends and

:10:28. > :10:34.family, so thanks to Aldi for the great jackets! Other superstores are

:10:35. > :10:39.available! I was about to say that myself! Andy Murray, as well, you're

:10:40. > :10:43.both clearly very proud Scotsman. We came here and bought into the whole

:10:44. > :10:47.Olympic experience as the defending Olympic champion and you were there

:10:48. > :10:51.for that as well. What a special moment that was for him. You saw the

:10:52. > :10:58.emotion at match point against Juan Martin Del Potro. It was someone

:10:59. > :11:03.breaking and then breaking back and there were no 6-1 sets. Murray moved

:11:04. > :11:07.Juan Martin Del Potro everywhere he was out of his feet and it took a

:11:08. > :11:12.deep breath and he banged in ace down and it was him again. And it

:11:13. > :11:16.got to 6-5 and he broke to win it I do not think they could have

:11:17. > :11:21.continued. Four hours for four sets and you saw the end they grabbed

:11:22. > :11:25.each other and they wiped out. The Brazilian fans were great and they

:11:26. > :11:30.suddenly became British fans because of Argentina and Maradona was there

:11:31. > :11:35.to support Juan Martin Del Potro on Brazil didn't like that much and the

:11:36. > :11:38.atmosphere for those four hours was unbelievable. We follow Andy Murray

:11:39. > :11:41.and we have been to the Davis Cup final last year we go everywhere,

:11:42. > :11:46.absolutely brilliant to come here and see it. A couple of people

:11:47. > :11:55.watching on social media are remarking your T-shirt is on the

:11:56. > :12:05.wrong way round. Shall turnaround? A quick flash, but this is a really

:12:06. > :12:10.quick flash. I like the T-shirt, but I thought it wasn't appropriate

:12:11. > :12:18.viewing children and adults. Certainly not BBC One anyway! The

:12:19. > :12:24.BBC for its appropriate but you... What did you tell me earlier? My

:12:25. > :12:32.mother might not let me back in Scotland. You wouldn't get that on

:12:33. > :12:36.BBC One. We want to get social media involved tonight because Helen

:12:37. > :12:41.Glover is out in Rio tonight on the you know a hen do on BBC Four. She

:12:42. > :12:45.is out tonight we have tried to convince her to come down and have a

:12:46. > :12:49.chat with us before we go air at 2am. She says she is at a samba

:12:50. > :12:55.dancer tone with her and party friends at the moment. What can you

:12:56. > :12:58.offer the camera guys to get Helen Glover on television tonight. We

:12:59. > :13:03.will give her a personal Scottish Highland dance free of change --

:13:04. > :13:08.charge and maybe magic Mike Weir kilts.

:13:09. > :13:13.I think that's a good reason to come. If she is watching you might

:13:14. > :13:16.put off! Gentlemen, it's been a pleasure. I like the fact you can

:13:17. > :13:20.fit your phones in your sporrans, it's all there and taking care of.

:13:21. > :13:24.Kenny and Andy, thank you very much gentlemen. We will go back to the

:13:25. > :13:29.table tennis and the men's doubles final and as the binmen are back on

:13:30. > :13:31.the beach it is all happening. Japan against China at 1-1 and we returned

:13:32. > :13:53.to the Riocentro to pick it up. 1-1 after the singles in the

:13:54. > :14:06.gold-medal match. The doubles players have been decided. How does

:14:07. > :14:12.this affect the rest of the possibilities for this intriguing

:14:13. > :14:27.match? After that incredible performance by Mr Tani -- Mizutani,

:14:28. > :14:44.we know that Yoshi Muroya is a good player, but we have to back Ma Long

:14:45. > :14:48.here. They sent out Xu Xin in preference to playing at the top of

:14:49. > :14:56.the order, but he was dispatched, so there is a possibility that this

:14:57. > :15:04.match depends on this doubles. The two Japanese players on screen,

:15:05. > :15:09.Maharu Yoshimura and Koki Niwa have won two out of three, they won

:15:10. > :15:14.against Germany and Hong Kong, they have played strong opponents, and

:15:15. > :15:27.they have actually come through. Of course is

:15:28. > :15:42.a Zhang Jike and Xu Xin are ready. The Japanese pair are an established

:15:43. > :15:47.partnership, finalists in doubles on the world tour other Polish open and

:15:48. > :15:56.the Qatar open this year. So, a little more pressure than

:15:57. > :16:23.usual on the Chinese pair. Xu Xin just flicking off the end of

:16:24. > :16:31.the table. Perfect. Perfect execution of the flick, and Xu Xin

:16:32. > :16:38.straight through the back of the ball, read the spin well. Close,

:16:39. > :16:44.donations with a left/ right partnership, both combinations. I

:16:45. > :16:54.guess that will negate each other a little bit.

:16:55. > :17:09.Really getting the Chinese on the stretch. Great placement.

:17:10. > :17:15.Good top spin down the middle of the table from Xu Xin. I think the

:17:16. > :17:20.left-handed, right-handed combination tends to be one that

:17:21. > :17:23.countries are looking to develop, it tends to create a little more space

:17:24. > :17:26.down the middle of the table, as long as you get the footwork right

:17:27. > :17:29.and move back to your backhand side of the table, it opens up the table

:17:30. > :17:38.for your partner's forehand more often than not. What a backhand that

:17:39. > :17:52.from Maharu Yoshimura. Like a rocket. Delighted with that one, the

:17:53. > :17:53.Japanese coach. They will be delighted with the start they have

:17:54. > :18:18.had here. The Chinese pair have won so many on

:18:19. > :18:29.the tour, but the Japanese will be delighted with their start. The

:18:30. > :18:34.attack, aggressive. Zhang and Xu Xin have won three doubles titles on the

:18:35. > :18:42.tour this year alone. The served lifted long.

:18:43. > :18:56.And Xu Xin pounced on the opportunity to make that forehand

:18:57. > :19:16.topspin. That is a good top spin by Yoshi, they started strong. It is

:19:17. > :19:20.always tough when one player hasn't had such a spell on the tour. They

:19:21. > :19:45.are coming in cold. Oh, my goodness, the backhand from

:19:46. > :19:55.Maharu Yoshimura, the forehand popped up from Koki Niwa. Look how

:19:56. > :20:07.early he took the backhand topspin there, Yoshimura. Very flashy, Koki

:20:08. > :20:14.Niwa and Yoshimura. They are up four points.

:20:15. > :20:34.Five points in a row they have one, they now have game point.

:20:35. > :20:42.What an opening game! For Yoshimura and Koki Niwa, taking it for Japan

:20:43. > :20:48.11-4. They are on fire, they were on fire

:20:49. > :21:09.from the start of that game. In five minutes, taking the opening

:21:10. > :21:52.game in 11-4, very convincing. Can they sustain that level of play?

:21:53. > :22:06.Japan with the other hand, taking the opening game. -- Paul

:22:07. > :22:12.Great shot down the line from Yoshimura, he went straight through

:22:13. > :22:18.the ball, the drive smashed down the line. Of course, the two Japanese

:22:19. > :22:26.players are going out, being positive, going for the shots. They

:22:27. > :22:30.will be disappointed with that one. Yoshimura just pointing to his

:22:31. > :22:31.partner, basically saying, you did the business then, I let you down,

:22:32. > :22:52.that was the easy ball. Powerful and aggressive. The

:22:53. > :22:57.Japanese combination really dominating in some of these rallies.

:22:58. > :23:30.A very positive mindset they have. Good backhand topspin from Zhang,

:23:31. > :23:36.just came up the back of the ball, and China now lead 3-2. A signal

:23:37. > :23:45.there from Zhang, soap Xu Xin knows what serve his partner would like.

:23:46. > :23:55.That is a well-placed forehand topspin, out wide, played the angle

:23:56. > :23:58.well. Here it comes, out wide to Koki Niwa's forehand, he just watch

:23:59. > :24:23.as the ball go by. Zhang Jike and Ma Long just getting

:24:24. > :24:34.on top, they have a run of momentum and some bounce in their step.

:24:35. > :24:38.The Japanese coach encouraging his players here, he will be delighted

:24:39. > :24:55.with this situation at the moment. Koki Niwa just trying to play a

:24:56. > :25:00.strong backhand topspin on the diagonal, it wasn't quite there, but

:25:01. > :25:05.that is the sort of shots that the two Japanese players have to go for,

:25:06. > :25:08.chance there are if it comes off. Again, he was looking to topspin on

:25:09. > :25:13.the return of serve, Koki Niwa, changed his mind because it was an

:25:14. > :25:18.excellent serve, the second bounce was going to be on the table, so he

:25:19. > :25:26.had to play over the table and couldn't quite adjust quickly

:25:27. > :25:31.enough. So, it is looking like two quick games here. 11-4 for Japan in

:25:32. > :25:41.the first, and perhaps a similar score here. Amazing how things can

:25:42. > :25:49.turn around so quickly. The start of a new game.

:25:50. > :26:03.China serving at 9-3, second game, Japan having taken the first.

:26:04. > :26:16.Koki Niwa trying to flick out wide. Seven-game points for China. They

:26:17. > :26:32.get one back. Strong backhand from Yoshimura.

:26:33. > :26:43.That was a ridiculous shot! That was a 10-4 down shot, I might as well go

:26:44. > :26:52.for it. Just look at that. It shows he's got the talent.

:26:53. > :27:06.From 10-3 back to 10-6. Zhang Jike to serve now.

:27:07. > :27:16.And there is the second game, it 11-6 to China. Levelling the

:27:17. > :27:19.doubles, the third of the matches, at one game all. The overall match

:27:20. > :28:43.at one match all. One game all in this doubles match,

:28:44. > :28:52.China versus Japan. Third match of the team event gold medal match. And

:28:53. > :28:58.quite astonishing, the turnaround from the first game, which Japan won

:28:59. > :29:05.11-4 in five minutes, the second game going to China 11-6 in the same

:29:06. > :29:10.time, just totally different. It is amazing, it is the pair that got off

:29:11. > :29:15.to a good start that have dominated the game, in the first game, Japan

:29:16. > :29:19.got off to a flyer, China never got back into it, and the same happened

:29:20. > :29:24.in the second, it was 10-3 to China and Japan got a few points at the

:29:25. > :29:28.end. So I think the start of the game is so important for both pairs.

:29:29. > :29:32.If one pair goes ahead, the other pair seem to tense up a little bit.

:29:33. > :29:37.Doubles as a little more unpredictable than singles. And of

:29:38. > :29:41.course, these pairs have won big tournaments, but this will mean more

:29:42. > :29:45.than winning any tournament, this doubles, because whoever wins this

:29:46. > :30:12.doubles puts their team in a great situation for the gold medal.

:30:13. > :30:26.A good backhand down the line from Zhang Jike. The Japanese guys are

:30:27. > :30:35.taking their time. The Chinese coach is very animated on the bench,

:30:36. > :30:39.jumping up and down. I'm amazed he has gotten the adrenaline left. A

:30:40. > :30:50.flick off the line from Xu Xin hits the side of the

:30:51. > :31:06.table. Going for these smash their, Koki

:31:07. > :31:10.Niwa, it was a very good top-spin from Xu Xin and he managed to keep

:31:11. > :31:15.it quite low over the net as well. Let's have a look at it again. Here

:31:16. > :31:27.it comes now. Not as low as I thought but it still had a lot of

:31:28. > :31:31.top-spin, it was fizzing with spin. Zhang Jike will be disappointed, his

:31:32. > :31:37.forehand on the backhand side is normally very reliable body over its

:31:38. > :31:51.that one. In the lead, still anybody's game. A very different

:31:52. > :32:15.game this one, much closer, no one running away with it. 1-1 game. 5-5.

:32:16. > :32:27.The Japanese coach punching the air himself, a few points adrift, Japan,

:32:28. > :32:37.they are now one point up. Halfway through this third game. This is the

:32:38. > :32:46.first time they've been in the lead. It was 6-5, now 7-5. A good service

:32:47. > :32:51.-- the service there was not great from Xu Xin, it allowed Koki Niwa to

:32:52. > :33:11.play a strong top-spin. Koki Niwa will be disappointed, he

:33:12. > :33:18.had a chance there. Just throwing a lifeline to China. 8-5 down would

:33:19. > :33:25.have been a serious advantage for Japan. 7-6. Zhang Jike missing quite

:33:26. > :33:57.a few top-spin 's. That is a good top-spinner from Xu

:33:58. > :34:02.Xin, he was at full stretch there. We've seen the shot again in

:34:03. > :34:09.various, low over the net. Side spin. It was the side spin that won

:34:10. > :34:25.the point. Koki Niwa looking at his bat implies that there was that much

:34:26. > :34:29.side spin on the ball. Top-spin again and Zhang Jike would have been

:34:30. > :34:32.hoping to get the counter top-spinner and he stepped away from

:34:33. > :34:43.the table to give himself a little bit more time.

:34:44. > :34:52.Oh, that was a great backhander from Zhang Jike, stayed up to the table.

:34:53. > :35:03.Xu Xin set it up but it was well executed by Zhang Jike. There it

:35:04. > :35:17.comes. China, of course, will serve up the business end. A big point.

:35:18. > :35:26.Top-spin to top-spin, both coaches on their feet, a great rally. Such

:35:27. > :35:28.tight situations out here. One game all and is nine points all. Look at

:35:29. > :35:45.what they are coming up with. The most crucial moment arguably in

:35:46. > :35:49.the whole match, the overall match. A win here for Japan, they have to

:35:50. > :36:06.win two games here of course, but this one tightly in the balance.

:36:07. > :36:15.This time the trademark forehand top-spin from the backhand side, and

:36:16. > :36:27.well appreciated by the Chinese coach. All happening so quickly out

:36:28. > :36:36.here. A wonderful rally. Bringing up game point for China. Do you think

:36:37. > :36:48.he's pleased? He would be more pleased if his team can win this

:36:49. > :37:00.one. And they do. China are taking the third game 11-9. It was a

:37:01. > :37:04.beauty. They lead 2-1. The interesting that there was Zhang

:37:05. > :37:08.Jike fell on the rally of God of God of a couple of shots he would have

:37:09. > :37:14.been diving and scrambling on the floor. A tremendous game with great

:37:15. > :37:18.excitement and China now I think the favourites to take the doubles

:37:19. > :37:23.because I think Zhang Jike suddenly found a rich vein of form there. He

:37:24. > :37:26.had missed quite a few ?4 and he was, I think pretty nervous and

:37:27. > :37:34.suddenly at the end five or six points, just look at that. China

:37:35. > :38:12.leading 2-1, taking the third 11-9. The third game going to China 11-9.

:38:13. > :38:22.Not much in it. The start of the fourth game, China leading 2-1.

:38:23. > :38:35.An error from your shoe mirror. Of course, the way the order has panned

:38:36. > :38:42.out, the next game on is arguably a banker, or as much as you can have a

:38:43. > :38:45.banker with Jun Mizutani coming on at the end but if Japan lose the

:38:46. > :38:50.doubles then we have the master coming on, the Olympic champion

:38:51. > :38:55.coming on, so this is a must win for Japan. I just sense now that maybe

:38:56. > :39:07.the tide has turned and they needed to win a third game, we identified

:39:08. > :39:11.that. He is absolutely right, is the Japanese coach, on his feet and

:39:12. > :39:18.time-out. You really sense the change in momentum. They had their

:39:19. > :39:24.opportunities in that second game. They didn't quite get there, and now

:39:25. > :39:28.they have to get over the disappointment of that and also the

:39:29. > :39:32.Chinese pair are just playing with a bit more confidence, having that

:39:33. > :39:43.third game in their pocket. 3-0 in the fourth. It is a real credit to

:39:44. > :39:51.Japan, I have seen the Chinese coach get very excited before, but nothing

:39:52. > :40:04.like this. The adrenaline is working overtime for the Chinese coach.

:40:05. > :40:13.2-1, China was leading in the doubles and 3-0 in the fourth. It is

:40:14. > :40:16.always good to win the first point after the time-out, psychologically.

:40:17. > :40:21.If you're looking to break the momentum and you win a point then

:40:22. > :40:25.job done. Can they get a few more points now?

:40:26. > :40:54.They do. Two points on the trot after the time-out.

:40:55. > :41:05.Quite amazing really. The way that can happen. Zhang Jike and Xu Xin

:41:06. > :41:07.have a lovely flow in those opening points of that game. The bubble was

:41:08. > :41:23.burst by the time-out. 3-3. A great shot from Yoshimura, held

:41:24. > :41:27.his ground and played the top-spin. That is four consecutive points now

:41:28. > :41:42.for Japan, they are definitely back in this fourth game. A good top-spin

:41:43. > :41:46.from Xu Xin, came up the back of the ball, more top-spin than speed, very

:41:47. > :41:55.clever only there was the speed and the spin. If you keep playing the

:41:56. > :41:59.same shot you have to get the bat angle sorted but a you're varying

:42:00. > :42:10.the shot your opponents have to bury the bat angle. Backhand top-spin

:42:11. > :42:15.down the line. It was a good idea. Zhang Jike it started to step around

:42:16. > :42:21.the backhand, but it misses. Tactics were good. Execution not. A heavy

:42:22. > :42:25.backspin on the serve their from Xu Xin. He really came under the board.

:42:26. > :42:30.-- he really came underneath the ball, so it was fizzing with

:42:31. > :42:48.backspin. China are now back with a 2-point lead. Importantly with that

:42:49. > :42:57.momentum up on their side. A good push their by Yoshimura, suddenly

:42:58. > :43:02.went long and deep. Xu Xin is just holding his back a bit, he has had a

:43:03. > :43:08.history of back injury. He certainly pulled up after that shot. He looks

:43:09. > :43:24.uncomfortable as he stood after that. They time-out has been called.

:43:25. > :43:32.Definitely in some pain. Zhang Jike. Confirmation of the situation at the

:43:33. > :43:42.moment. Zhang Jike just doing a little bit of scratching. --

:43:43. > :43:57.stretching. So the youngsters, relatively speaking, 21 and 23 years

:43:58. > :44:15.of age. The two Chinese players, Zhang Jike 28, Xu Xin 26.

:44:16. > :44:23.Your thoughts on the timing of the time-out? I think potentially they

:44:24. > :44:33.are worried about the injury, I think Xu Xin saw Zhang Jike grimace,

:44:34. > :44:36.and he had up his sleeve,. Good topspin, just give him time to

:44:37. > :44:44.stretches back a little bit, unleashed that forehand topspin.

:44:45. > :44:48.Doesn't seem to be having any problems with the movement. The

:44:49. > :44:54.concern will be that he has had major problems with the back. A

:44:55. > :45:08.fracture in part of his spine in 2015.

:45:09. > :45:18.Good use of the wrists from Xu Xin, a little more topspin on the ball.

:45:19. > :45:25.The block not quite over the spin. So, China now with a useful 3-point

:45:26. > :45:33.lead, and it is the second serve in this sequence for Xu Xin. And the

:45:34. > :45:37.flick off the end of the table from Yoshimura, it was a brave thing to

:45:38. > :45:42.do. Time running out for the Japanese team. They must winless

:45:43. > :45:52.game to stay in it. 5-9. Match point for China. Zhang Jike

:45:53. > :46:16.and Xu Xin. That visit, a gentle celebration

:46:17. > :46:36.there, relieved to get through that one. Zhang Jike and Xu Xin winning

:46:37. > :46:40.that one three games to one, 11-5 in the fourth, and not an exuberant

:46:41. > :46:44.celebration after the emotions of that match. They've still got a lot

:46:45. > :46:56.of work to do out here. They did well after the time-out call by U

:46:57. > :47:00.Liang, and I think they won every point after the time-out, so it

:47:01. > :47:03.wasn't quite an anti-climax, but we thought it was going to be really

:47:04. > :47:11.tight, and China ran out fairly comfortable victors in that fourth

:47:12. > :47:16.game, but that was a big win for Xu Xin and Zhang Jike, and we now have

:47:17. > :47:24.another five-minute break, up to five minutes if the players want it.

:47:25. > :47:35.Confirmation of that result. Three games to one, 11-5 in the fourth.

:47:36. > :47:42.So, there you have it. We shall be back for the fourth game. We are

:47:43. > :47:47.with you until around about two o'clock. It looks like we have

:47:48. > :47:54.failed in our attempt to bring you Helen Glover, she is enjoying her

:47:55. > :48:03.hen do out in Rio. Number one in the good news, though, Copacabinmen has

:48:04. > :48:10.been trending on Twitter tonight. And you can see Laura and Pablo

:48:11. > :48:13.there, not the guy in the blue T-shirt, he is from Chile and he is

:48:14. > :48:20.selling flags, but Laura and Pablo are going to play a site tonight

:48:21. > :48:28.with their band Lynn and banjo. I have to get the name of this, I have

:48:29. > :48:36.to read you a little bit of this. Squeezy Orange has sent us

:48:37. > :48:37.Copacabanter the musical. You can find it on Twitter, I will half sing

:48:38. > :48:54.it is to you. Channel Barry Manilow.

:48:55. > :48:58.# They are the binmen, Copacabinmen, riding up and down the beach, no

:48:59. > :49:01.orange bin they couldn't reach # They wave at Walker, the bin man

:49:02. > :49:06.stalker # He should present the sport, but

:49:07. > :49:09.we'd rather here his bin report # The show has been fun and

:49:10. > :49:16.entertaining, and we want more # It is the Copacabanter

:49:17. > :49:23.# Olympic we sport should be scant # It is the Copacabanter

:49:24. > :49:28.# Beachcombing slow-mo, the future of TV shows, at the Copacabanter...

:49:29. > :49:36.And it goes on. APPLAUSE

:49:37. > :49:42.There are three versus! One is about Maria and one is about Antony

:49:43. > :49:46.Worrall Thompson. I will do it another time, but thank you very

:49:47. > :49:52.much to Squeezy Orange, who has clearly spent far too much time on

:49:53. > :50:01.that! We have our live musicians, Laura and Pablo. On BBC One at the

:50:02. > :50:05.moment, Usain Bolt going in the heats of the 200 metres, the final

:50:06. > :50:14.of that is tomorrow. You can also see Jade Jones tomorrow, and the

:50:15. > :50:24.triathlon as well with the Brownlees involved. There is a Bolt Countdown,

:50:25. > :50:30.you can finish with us, have a little music and finish with the

:50:31. > :50:37.Bolt Countdown, over on BBC One, how does that sound? Ore will be back

:50:38. > :50:44.tomorrow, but let's go back to the table tennis, and we have a bit more

:50:45. > :50:48.of China taking on Japan. I don't know whether you are just joining us

:50:49. > :50:53.whether you have been for hours, but if you are drifting off to sleep,

:50:54. > :50:58.wake-up! We are going back to the table tennis, China leading Japan by

:50:59. > :51:01.two games to one, we are into the fourth match now. If they win this

:51:02. > :51:07.one than the gold medal goes to China. This is the gold medal match,

:51:08. > :51:10.I'm not sure we will be able to stay with it for a duration, but you

:51:11. > :51:14.continue with it on the Red Button or via the sport app, apologies once

:51:15. > :51:18.again for that lame Barry Manilow thing, but I think we are all

:51:19. > :51:51.getting a bit carried away. Here is some table tennis.

:51:52. > :52:00.Playing for the gold medal in the team event, the final event on the

:52:01. > :52:07.table tennis programme for Rio 2016. China have never lost a team event

:52:08. > :52:14.in an Olympic competition, but they are being pushed in this one against

:52:15. > :52:20.Japan. This is the fourth match, China lead 2-1 in the overall match.

:52:21. > :52:35.Ma Long won his opening singles against Koki Niwa of Japan. Then Xu

:52:36. > :52:40.Xin lost to Jun Mizutani, and then the doubles which was not without

:52:41. > :52:49.its drama. Now we go into the fourth singles, with Maharu Yoshimura of

:52:50. > :52:54.Japan taking on Ma Long. Yoshimura ranked 21 in the world, 23 years of

:52:55. > :53:01.age, and it will be a tough task for him against the world number one.

:53:02. > :53:04.And the world number one is so strong in the team event. He

:53:05. > :53:11.actually was the youngest person to win a gold medal in the team event,

:53:12. > :53:15.and he won that back in Bremen in a team event, part of the Chinese

:53:16. > :53:19.team, an amazing performance, and here we are ten years later, he is

:53:20. > :53:23.the number one player in the Chinese team, he has put together a run of

:53:24. > :53:29.some 30 matches now, undefeated, so statistically speaking, Olympic

:53:30. > :53:33.champion, world champion, with an impeccable record in the team event.

:53:34. > :53:39.It doesn't get any tougher for Yoshimura then coming up against Ma

:53:40. > :53:43.Long, but you don't know what will happen, there are always surprises

:53:44. > :53:46.in sport, and that is what is so wonderful about the Olympics and

:53:47. > :53:54.sport itself, but this gentleman has a tough task in front of him.

:53:55. > :54:02.Match four of the gold medal final of the teams event. Ma Long to

:54:03. > :54:13.serve. Also, Yoshimura has to deal with the

:54:14. > :54:22.disappointment of the doubles that he has just played and lost.

:54:23. > :54:32.That is a fantastic shot, just steps around the backhand. So smooth. It

:54:33. > :54:38.just went like a bullet down the middle of the table, he looks like,

:54:39. > :54:42.even when he is leaning and looks off-balance, he plays with power.

:54:43. > :54:45.Just look at that return of service, unbelievable. Like many champions,

:54:46. > :55:02.he makes it look easy. Yoshimura showing good attitude

:55:03. > :55:06.there, fighting for every point. He needs to be brave, take a few

:55:07. > :55:13.chances, just hope that the luck goes his way slightly.

:55:14. > :55:28.The top spin backhand a little bit long. You Goolie

:55:29. > :55:38.Liang, the Chinese coach, looking a little more relaxed. He just has

:55:39. > :55:46.such tremendous confidence in this man.

:55:47. > :56:01.There were some very tight moments in the doubles.

:56:02. > :56:07.Just miss timed the service action there, I don't think the ball was

:56:08. > :56:11.thrown up as he would have liked, may be stuck in his hand a little

:56:12. > :56:15.bit. My goodness, what a great flick,

:56:16. > :56:21.textbook technique, top of the bands, elbow, wrist, through the

:56:22. > :56:42.back of the ball. Ma Long all over Yoshimura at the moment, 7-1.

:56:43. > :56:48.Right, we will leave it there on BBC Four this evening. This match

:56:49. > :56:52.continues on the Red Button and the website, so if you would like to

:56:53. > :56:55.know who will win the gold medal in the men's team table tennis, and on

:56:56. > :56:59.the other Red Button, depending on which stream you watch, you can see

:57:00. > :57:06.the bronze medal match in the beach volleyball. And then that will be

:57:07. > :57:09.followed by the gold medal match in the women's beach volleyball as

:57:10. > :57:14.well, and over on BBC One, the athletics continues. In about an

:57:15. > :57:23.hour, you will be able to see the final of the 100 metres hurdles with

:57:24. > :57:27.Tiffany Porter and Cindy Ofili representing Team GB. That continues

:57:28. > :57:31.on BBC One for the next few hours. But we are going to leave you with a

:57:32. > :57:35.bit of live music on BBC Four. And we have a big crowd, as well! Good

:57:36. > :57:40.evening, everybody! CHEERING

:57:41. > :57:45.Look at them all. They have assembled to see these two, this is

:57:46. > :58:00.Laura and Pablo, lovely to have you on. They will play us out tonight

:58:01. > :58:04.with a track called to make -- Los Imperios.
