:00:53. > :00:58.Hello and welcome to reopen Replay, highlights from Day 12.

:00:59. > :01:16.This is what is coming up. Usain Bolt takes to the track again.

:01:17. > :01:21.Adam Gemili joins the Jamaican showman in the 200 metres

:01:22. > :01:25.semifinals. Dafne Schippers goes for a gold

:01:26. > :01:39.medal in the 200 metres. As does Dina Asher-Smith.

:01:40. > :01:50.Tiffany Porter bid to add an Olympic medal to her collection.

:01:51. > :01:52.And the Brazil women have beachball goals medals in their sights.

:01:53. > :02:58.Let us head to the Olympic Stadium. That is brilliant! There he is in

:02:59. > :03:03.his regular... Regular civvies, not his combat clothes.

:03:04. > :03:08.There was a complaint from the family he hadn't been included but

:03:09. > :03:09.we felt it was very unfair he wasn't in that first video. I

:03:10. > :03:32.He was a fine young runner. He was.

:03:33. > :03:38.Let's head on and show you what's coming up in this feast

:03:39. > :03:42.of athletics here tonight. Well, it is all about the women

:03:43. > :03:44.first up on the track, and the men's javelin decathlon,

:03:45. > :03:44.sorry, the men's javelin qualification is going,

:03:45. > :04:15.the decathlon is ongoing, And then at two o'clock the men's

:04:16. > :04:18.200 metres semifinals, featuring Usain Bolt and three

:04:19. > :04:22.British men, Danny Talbot and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake

:04:23. > :04:28.as well. And the women's 200 metre final

:04:29. > :04:34.featuring Elaine Thompson at 2:30am. And then the women who qualify

:04:35. > :04:38.for that hundred metres hurdle go again at 2:55am,

:04:39. > :04:42.but I imagine many of you will focus a lot on just after two o'clock

:04:43. > :04:46.in the morning when all eyes will be Usain Bolt lives and breathes

:04:47. > :04:54.Olympic titles, gathering them up as though they were daisies

:04:55. > :05:02.in a field. This is his arena,

:05:03. > :05:11.this is his stage. Attempting to become the first

:05:12. > :05:17.athlete to achieve three gold medals in the same event,

:05:18. > :05:20.competing at a level which no one has done before, look at the impact

:05:21. > :05:24.it has here and look at the impact Here comes Usain Bolt and Usain Bolt

:05:25. > :05:43.is going to take it. Listen to the noise

:05:44. > :06:02.in Rio de Janeiro! And it also helps explain why this

:06:03. > :06:30.stadium is about as full here and the atmosphere has

:06:31. > :06:37.already begun to build. The temperatures is still 30

:06:38. > :06:39.degrees, beautiful for sprinters, not so good if you are sitting under

:06:40. > :06:42.the lights of a TV screen, but we shall not complain,

:06:43. > :06:45.and let's talk about Usain Bolt, was he playing with the press

:06:46. > :06:47.after the 100 metres, he said if the heat was far

:06:48. > :06:50.apart he said he could go He said to you earlier

:06:51. > :06:54.in the summer that he would not There is a gap between the world

:06:55. > :06:59.record and sub 19 and he said he didn't think he could accomplish

:07:00. > :07:04.the sub 19 any more. There is 19 hundredths

:07:05. > :07:08.of a second between that. Maybe he feels he can do that

:07:09. > :07:11.and maybe it is because, here is the mystery,

:07:12. > :07:14.his training has been going so well over the summer between that time

:07:15. > :07:21.that he got the injury at the Jamaican championships

:07:22. > :07:24.and the Anniversary Games and then from the Anniversary Games to now,

:07:25. > :07:26.so we don't know what's been Earlier, Michael said that out

:07:27. > :07:31.of three British men, Nathaniel Blake has the best chance,

:07:32. > :07:34.and he is sixth on the all-time list this year, he has run 19.95,

:07:35. > :07:40.so would you agree with that? I think based on his collegiate

:07:41. > :07:43.experience, yes, we spoke I still feel that the edge

:07:44. > :08:00.for me is Gemili. That would be my call,

:08:01. > :08:04.and don't forget we have two Before we get to that,

:08:05. > :08:15.Steve has some breaking Yes, anyone who was with us earlier

:08:16. > :08:23.on today would have enjoyed A major title, finally,

:08:24. > :08:30.for this talent, and The defending champion

:08:31. > :08:40.has crossed in third place. He announced retirement

:08:41. > :08:44.from the sport. However, the French protested one

:08:45. > :08:54.hour after the race. After a lot of scrutiny,

:08:55. > :09:00.and you can see Mekhissi-Benabbad, he puts one foot over the line

:09:01. > :09:04.between the cones I think perhaps Watch this, and Benabbad

:09:05. > :09:16.is behind him, possibly sees this, one foot out, that is his left foot,

:09:17. > :09:22.his right foot comes back in the line and that has been upheld

:09:23. > :09:26.by the jury of appeal, so he has been disqualified

:09:27. > :09:32.and the bronze medal goes to Mekhissi-Benabbad,

:09:33. > :09:34.and in my view, we are astonished And given how far Kemboi

:09:35. > :09:45.was ahead, and it was one foot that has now meant

:09:46. > :09:58.that he is disqualified. And as I said, I think it was harsh

:09:59. > :10:11.from the jury of appeal. So, the first semi-final

:10:12. > :10:13.of the women's 100 metres hurdles, and Tiffany Porter

:10:14. > :10:16.for Great Britain. Fourth and fifth at the World

:10:17. > :10:34.Championships before that. And Beijing last year,

:10:35. > :10:36.just not quite in the kind of form that took to those

:10:37. > :10:43.major championship finals. And Williams, her sister,

:10:44. > :10:49.Danielle, won. She didn't finish in

:10:50. > :10:59.the Jamaican trials. The Croatian, 31, with huge

:11:00. > :11:01.improvements last year, And Tiffany Porter two tenths

:11:02. > :11:15.of a second off her PB. A surprise silver at

:11:16. > :11:19.the World Championships, the new European champion and a very

:11:20. > :11:22.decent heptathlete as well, And Talay, bronze in Beijing,

:11:23. > :11:35.former European champion, in a back dated bronze

:11:36. > :11:45.following a drugs cheat. And I think favourite

:11:46. > :11:47.for the overall gold in the absence of Harrison,

:11:48. > :11:52.she has pushed her close as all this season, Rollins,

:11:53. > :11:54.and Harrison fell victim Gomis of France, with a personal

:11:55. > :12:03.best of 12.79, second to Cindy And Seymour of the Bahamas,

:12:04. > :12:10.lowering the Bahamas record So, the first of three semifinals

:12:11. > :12:20.and it will be the first two who go through automatically,

:12:21. > :12:22.and the next two fastest losers only to the final,

:12:23. > :12:24.which takes place in just over Tiffany Porter needs something,

:12:25. > :12:37.because she is not running the times at the moment that are quite quick

:12:38. > :12:40.enough to see her into So many variables, so many things

:12:41. > :12:50.can happen in hurdles. It is humid and still,

:12:51. > :12:59.not a breath of wind today in Rio. First semi-final in the women's

:13:00. > :13:10.100 metres hurdles. Porter raced to the first barrier,

:13:11. > :13:13.she is running hard. Cindy Roleder trying

:13:14. > :13:17.to get alongside her. Alina Talay has gone,

:13:18. > :13:21.but Porter fades as well. Pedrya Seymour coming

:13:22. > :13:23.through late for the Bahamas, 12.48, just an indicator

:13:24. > :13:41.of what Rowlands can do. That is not really a surprise,

:13:42. > :13:45.she got out so well but has Pedrya Seymour rock the Bahamas,

:13:46. > :13:49.we talked about her lowering the Bahamian record over and over

:13:50. > :13:53.again this season. But for Tiffany Porter,

:13:54. > :14:01.not quite good enough. Not this time,

:14:02. > :14:04.unfortunately, for Tiffany. But

:14:05. > :14:13.Brianna Rollins takes Once she gets that lead

:14:14. > :14:16.it is difficult for anybody It matches her name,

:14:17. > :14:25.she has this rolling technique. She oozes herself

:14:26. > :14:28.over these barriers. A unique technique for women,

:14:29. > :14:30.but so effective. Tiffany did get out very well,

:14:31. > :14:34.just at the back end. She has a basic hip problem,

:14:35. > :14:37.actually, which means that at the back end of the race

:14:38. > :14:41.she fatigues more than necessary. Unfortunately for her,

:14:42. > :14:44.this is what she suffers from. So when lots of times people

:14:45. > :14:47.criticise her, saying that she does not do enough technical work

:14:48. > :14:50.or technical endurance work, it is just the fact that it is just

:14:51. > :14:54.her, unfortunately. She gets out well and when she is

:14:55. > :14:57.working she is really swift over She has to work with trailing her

:14:58. > :15:04.leg through all the time. It is this stage, when the technical

:15:05. > :15:08.fatigue sets in, and her actual body It is nothing to do

:15:09. > :15:12.with work at all. It is just her physiology,

:15:13. > :15:15.unfortunately. Works hard, still keep striving,

:15:16. > :15:19.still keeps pushing to the end. Those are the kinds of times

:15:20. > :15:30.that she has been running all season, they are not good

:15:31. > :15:34.enough to get through. A big national record again

:15:35. > :15:38.for Pedrya Seymour from the Bahamas. A fifth national record this season

:15:39. > :15:41.for her, to see her through. Well, these are always the most

:15:42. > :15:47.difficult interviews to do, Because Tiffany wanted so much more

:15:48. > :15:50.and expected so much more, Yes, obviously I did not

:15:51. > :15:55.plan for that to happen. Was there something that

:15:56. > :16:05.did not work for you? I do not know if that will be good

:16:06. > :16:14.enough to get me to the final. What were you saying to yourself

:16:15. > :16:18.on the starting line? I had to tell myself to relax,

:16:19. > :16:20.which I didn't do. I hope it is enough and I hope my

:16:21. > :16:27.sister makes it to the final. We have come to expect

:16:28. > :16:42.that from Tiffany. But like she said, technically,

:16:43. > :16:52.towards the end of the race, it is just not good

:16:53. > :16:53.enough, unfortunately. Whether that is physiological

:16:54. > :16:55.or not, unfortunately for Tiffany, It has not been

:16:56. > :16:59.a vintage year for her. I still would have expected

:17:00. > :17:02.her to get through. She has proved time and time again

:17:03. > :17:06.that she is able to get into finals. She will be bitterly,

:17:07. > :17:07.bitterly disappointed Yes, that bronze medal

:17:08. > :17:18.in the World Championships was a real indicator

:17:19. > :17:20.of where she could go in the sport. Since then, things have not

:17:21. > :17:22.always come together. Last year in Beijing did not

:17:23. > :17:31.come together either. Yes, in the Beijing Championships

:17:32. > :17:34.she literally clipped the final hurdles when she was almost

:17:35. > :17:41.in a medal winning position. It doesn't matter what your form

:17:42. > :17:44.is like, you hit a hurdle These semifinals are always

:17:45. > :17:54.nervous, even for the best. Nia Ali will be hoping she can

:17:55. > :17:56.settle her nerves. Anybody could come second

:17:57. > :18:27.here, too Nia Ali. And I am saying that,

:18:28. > :18:29.coming second, because And the one they have

:18:30. > :18:52.left, Kenny Harrison, Phylicia George of

:18:53. > :18:55.Canada in lane six. And another 19-year-old running

:18:56. > :19:35.for Puerto Rico, The first disc of all of these

:19:36. > :19:39.athletes in the qualification rounds. -- fastest.

:19:40. > :20:16.And Nick Esher Wilson, the much more experienced

:20:17. > :20:20.Nia Ali gets a good start, so does Hildebrand alongside her.

:20:21. > :20:37.That was going to be the race of her life.

:20:38. > :20:41.The 19-year-old was pushing all the way.

:20:42. > :20:47.Maybe that is why she hit the hurdle.

:20:48. > :20:58.But goodness me, she was right amongst it.

:20:59. > :21:10.This is what the Olympic Games means to her.

:21:11. > :21:13.And as well, when you are in great shape, your training partner

:21:14. > :21:16.is in wonderful shape, it was a bit of a signal.

:21:17. > :21:21.She captures that trail leg and then goes into it with her lead,

:21:22. > :21:26.Once you have all of your force going forward that way there is not

:21:27. > :21:34.It was the hurdle before that that caused her to be short of that

:21:35. > :21:40.She only started this seriously in 2013 and 2014.

:21:41. > :21:49.Somebody should say to her, that was brilliant, up

:21:50. > :21:54.No doubt, remember, you mentioned that she is training with the world

:21:55. > :22:00.She will definitely be able to consult her.

:22:01. > :22:03.Where she is going to get that improvement is from

:22:04. > :22:11.It is that hurdle but she clips with her trail leg, which causes

:22:12. > :22:19.The race then goes completely away from her.

:22:20. > :22:21.Nia Ali moves away to take the victory comfortably.

:22:22. > :22:24.You have to feel for the young woman.

:22:25. > :22:27.Nia Ali, nice, cool and calm, focusing on the barrier.

:22:28. > :22:33.The cashier 's aggressive off the barrier all the time.

:22:34. > :22:35.Aggressive off the barrier all the time.

:22:36. > :22:37.She pulls that trail leg through actively,

:22:38. > :22:52.But all of that drama means at the moment, Tiffany Porter

:22:53. > :22:54.is still in a qualification position, hanging on to

:22:55. > :23:02.Well, I bet Tiffany Porter did not expect that.

:23:03. > :23:04.12.91 was the third place in that race.

:23:05. > :23:07.She has to take some deep breaths and hope that her sister will go

:23:08. > :23:11.through automatically, because I am sure she will want her sister to go

:23:12. > :23:14.through, and that the third fastest in this race is not as fast as her.

:23:15. > :23:19.She has run quicker than Tiffany this season.

:23:20. > :23:20.Arguably in better shape, would you say?

:23:21. > :23:32.I am not sure whether they actually train together, but I have seen some

:23:33. > :23:38.You can see Tiffany pacing up and down there.

:23:39. > :23:41.Tiffany is a very religious person, she will be praying right now.

:23:42. > :23:48.It is agony, I can't begin to tell you what that feels like.

:23:49. > :23:57.Last night we had Dina Asher-Smith scraped through as the fastest

:23:58. > :24:02.No, and I don't know if this next heat will be the fastest

:24:03. > :24:11.The faster athletes were in the last two hits.

:24:12. > :24:13.The faster athletes were in the last two heats.

:24:14. > :24:17.Obviously you have to get in there and finish top two,

:24:18. > :24:19.and hope that those other two times will be slower,

:24:20. > :24:27.It is a little bit of a bad situation, that Cindy

:24:28. > :24:29.and Tiffany could both be competing for the final spot.

:24:30. > :24:32.You could have that sort of scenario which could be interesting to see.

:24:33. > :24:35.It could be, but you know what, Tiffany will be so delighted

:24:36. > :24:43.They are so close, such a strong bond.

:24:44. > :24:45.They train together sometimes, they are so tight.

:24:46. > :24:48.We have talked about that family atmosphere this year

:24:49. > :24:52.with her husband also competing in the 110 hurdles.

:24:53. > :24:55.She is pacing like an expectant father, waiting and waiting to see

:24:56. > :24:59.what could be delivered in this, the final of the semi-final heats.

:25:00. > :25:06.As Michael said, it is not the strongest of

:25:07. > :25:12.A decent lineup here for Cindy Ofili.

:25:13. > :25:15.While Tiffany Porter continues to place,

:25:16. > :25:18.we will bring you the result from the last semi-final.

:25:19. > :25:27.Yes, just to confirm that, Oluwatobiloba Amusan was not quick

:25:28. > :25:29.enough in third place, the other 19 year old.

:25:30. > :25:32.That would have been so different if Camacho-Quinn had stayed

:25:33. > :25:35.Here is the starting lineup for the last of the semifinals.

:25:36. > :25:43.Kristi Castlin is the in form athlete here.

:25:44. > :25:55.The younger sister, who deliberately never attempted to run for the US.

:25:56. > :25:58.Her mother Lillian was born in London.

:25:59. > :26:01.Runner-up to her older sister at the UK Championships

:26:02. > :26:08.by a fraction, but as we have been talking about, she has slightly

:26:09. > :26:18.Wearing out a groove on the top level of the stands.

:26:19. > :26:20.Whoever finishes first, when they do race together,

:26:21. > :26:29.Cindy Billaud, the French champion and recordholder.

:26:30. > :26:31.Not running the kinds of times she was a year ago.

:26:32. > :26:35.Always wears tape on her fingers, she is actually allergic

:26:36. > :26:48.Nikkita Holder sneaked into the semi-final.

:26:49. > :26:50.12.92 in the first round for the Canadian.

:26:51. > :26:52.Made the world final back in 2011 in South Korea.

:26:53. > :26:56.What a great strength the US has always had in this event.

:26:57. > :27:00.It actually has the top seven times in the world this year,

:27:01. > :27:03.we have talked about that at great length.

:27:04. > :27:06.Kenny Harrison is not here, the new world record holder,

:27:07. > :27:08.Anne Zagre, the Belgian recordholder.

:27:09. > :27:32.The US Collegiate champion. Running here at the Olympics

:27:33. > :27:36.for Great Britain. And Megan Simmonds, 12.79,

:27:37. > :27:50.personal best this year. Speaking of which, personal best

:27:51. > :27:52.this season, 12.85 for Dutkiewicz. And in lane nine, Pederson of Norway

:27:53. > :28:01.with her personal best in the first round of 12.86.

:28:02. > :28:03.None of them, Kristi Castlin is 12.6, but there are not

:28:04. > :28:17.many blistering times. It is certainly a heat that Ofili

:28:18. > :28:20.can go through from, and maybe her sister,

:28:21. > :28:22.Tiffany Porter, pacing and muttering She goes in lane six here,

:28:23. > :28:30.the last of the semifinals. The final takes place in just under

:28:31. > :28:36.two hours' time now. So, Ofili, Simmonds, Dutkiewicz

:28:37. > :28:51.and Pederson. It was a good, clean

:28:52. > :28:55.start from Ofili. It is the American,

:28:56. > :29:07.Castlin, and Ofili. I think Nikkita Holder

:29:08. > :29:15.took a fall. 12.64. We are watching the time

:29:16. > :29:22.is coming in. Her younger sister is through with

:29:23. > :29:26.12.71, and I think Famous last words, of course,

:29:27. > :29:33.and Tiffany Porter is All is well and right

:29:34. > :29:39.with the world. She and her younger sister are both

:29:40. > :29:42.through to the final of the women's But no, there was a lot

:29:43. > :29:55.of mess going on. You miss all of that

:29:56. > :30:06.because everything else And I think a lot of the athletes

:30:07. > :30:10.are having problems with the track, because it is a very hard track,

:30:11. > :30:13.which makes it fast indeed, and that is why they are struggling,

:30:14. > :30:16.because you get thrown onto the hurdle and if you make

:30:17. > :30:19.a mistake it seems catastrophic and we have seen this in the men's

:30:20. > :30:26.and women's events. That is what happened

:30:27. > :30:31.to the Jamaican, Megan Simmonds, she was out of shot

:30:32. > :30:33.but she was in prime position and then she was knocked

:30:34. > :30:37.back by the barriers. And that is the reason why we have

:30:38. > :30:40.not seen some of the fastest times. We have certainly seen an active

:30:41. > :30:47.race, that is for sure. Castlin, of course,

:30:48. > :30:49.we expect to go through, but what a run by Cindy

:30:50. > :30:56.and 12.71 is good. Reaction from Ofili

:30:57. > :31:03.at she goes through, and looking for the time,

:31:04. > :31:05.yes, I have work to do, She is off to go and warm down

:31:06. > :31:13.and then warm up again because of the final

:31:14. > :31:15.in a couple of hours, and then both sisters

:31:16. > :31:19.will be in the final. Well, Cindy, well done,

:31:20. > :31:25.through to the semi-final. I didn't have the best start

:31:26. > :31:30.but I am excited for the final. You must have been pleased that

:31:31. > :31:33.you lived up to the pressure. Can you tell us what it

:31:34. > :31:45.means for the family, both of you in the final

:31:46. > :31:47.in a couple of hours? STUDIO: That was never

:31:48. > :32:03.a foregone conclusion. Fantastic to have both

:32:04. > :32:12.sisters in the final. It will take place at the end

:32:13. > :32:15.of the session this evening. And the job is that she has

:32:16. > :32:22.to go and resettle. That nervous energy she has expended

:32:23. > :32:25.to prepare for that final. She have to go and sit down,

:32:26. > :32:32.calm down and think about the race, where things went wrong,

:32:33. > :32:35.she got out really well, Let's look at her race

:32:36. > :32:48.and what she has to do to correct the things that might

:32:49. > :32:50.improve a couple of hundredths We know that Tiffany

:32:51. > :32:54.is a really good start. It was about keeping

:32:55. > :33:02.the technique together. We know the end of a race

:33:03. > :33:07.is not her strength, but when she does connect it

:33:08. > :33:12.and when it does come together she is able to take medals

:33:13. > :33:16.because we have seen that from her. So, Cindy looks stronger

:33:17. > :33:18.at the moment, she has The Americans have been running

:33:19. > :33:28.so well, and all three are through, which is rare, but Cindy is good

:33:29. > :33:31.at starting and she has The Jamaican was really rolling

:33:32. > :33:36.and then unfortunately tumbled. And Kristi Castlin, one

:33:37. > :33:45.of the best in the world, She will certainly go

:33:46. > :33:54.in with confidence. She has been running really fast

:33:55. > :33:58.consistently this year. Once you are in the final

:33:59. > :34:07.you have a chance of a medal. This must be one of the Americans'

:34:08. > :34:10.strongest events. They were supposed to take

:34:11. > :34:17.the clean sweep in the last We don't have Kenny Harrison,

:34:18. > :34:24.the world recordholder, which she got at the Anniversary

:34:25. > :34:27.Games in London, and it is a shame And as you say, they are

:34:28. > :34:34.so unpredictable, which might explain why the USA didn't win

:34:35. > :34:37.a medal for the first time in history in the 110

:34:38. > :34:39.metre hurdles last night. So much can go right and so much can

:34:40. > :34:43.go wrong and that proved And they have had a really good

:34:44. > :34:53.season, this young girl, she is new to the event,

:34:54. > :34:56.and this was just a horrible fall. She was going really well,

:34:57. > :35:03.she was about to take the lead and then she just clashes

:35:04. > :35:06.into the second to last hurdle and STUDIO: Well, Great Britain has two

:35:07. > :35:39.met women in the long jump final, and that lady, Jazmin Sawyers,

:35:40. > :35:41.five foot three, silver-medallist in the junior Olympic bobsled team,

:35:42. > :35:43.in the Winter Olympics, a silver-medallist in the long jump

:35:44. > :35:46.and the European Championships, she has wide ranging interests,

:35:47. > :35:49.so she is not your average Jazmin Sawyers is having a good

:35:50. > :35:52.season so far, jumping in excess of 6.6 in summer,

:35:53. > :35:55.6.42 was her best until now and look at that, well,

:35:56. > :35:57.that will get her a place To guarantee my sport here I needed

:35:58. > :36:02.to jump over 6.7 and come in the top two and I did both,

:36:03. > :36:06.so I made it happened when it counted, and that was amazing,

:36:07. > :36:08.the whole experience, knowing that I was coming here and,

:36:09. > :36:11.again, pulling out the performance when it was important,

:36:12. > :36:13.and nothing is more People are like, aren't

:36:14. > :36:26.you meant to be tall? And I am like, yeah,

:36:27. > :36:29.and I have to be fast, They talk about you as a fashion

:36:30. > :36:35.icon? Instantly I scrolled

:36:36. > :36:47.to the top of the article to see he had written it,

:36:48. > :36:49.because there is no way they would have chosen me,

:36:50. > :36:52.so I don't know where it has come from, but apparently someone at

:36:53. > :36:55.Vogue thinks I am fashionable. Sawyers progressing

:36:56. > :36:57.to tomorrow's final. What would you be

:36:58. > :37:00.happy to go home with? If I don't jump my personal best

:37:01. > :37:05.I am not doing my personal best, because being competitive when it

:37:06. > :37:15.matters, is a trait I am proud of. This is the biggeat stage,

:37:16. > :37:17.the greatest show on Earth and if I don't produce my best,

:37:18. > :37:23.I won't be happy, so I want to get further than I have and I can

:37:24. > :37:26.say, once we have done that, I enjoy myself and that is

:37:27. > :37:31.when the best performances come. I want to be able to take off

:37:32. > :37:34.the pressure and enjoy At the moment she is bouncing

:37:35. > :37:44.around, enjoying the announcement for the long jumpers,

:37:45. > :37:52.that is what they do for all events, they get out the samba band

:37:53. > :37:55.and she is a delight to look at with that big beaming smile,

:37:56. > :37:57.she loves being here, and she is so bouncy

:37:58. > :38:02.that, Michael Johnson, you could forgive her for thinking

:38:03. > :38:05.she was a gymnast, but as you get close you realise it is Sawyers,

:38:06. > :38:10.but she could be a gymnast. She has broad shoulders and

:38:11. > :38:14.hopefully she can pull it out today. Let's go to Steve

:38:15. > :38:19.and assess the field. She is by no means the jumper

:38:20. > :38:22.in the field with the longest distance, but she is

:38:23. > :38:24.a great competitor. She wants to do her

:38:25. > :38:28.best when it matters. She loves competing and has such

:38:29. > :38:33.an endearing personality. She talked about her

:38:34. > :38:38.personal best, 6.75 metres. You can't help think she will need

:38:39. > :38:42.all of that and some more to get She has four successive

:38:43. > :38:51.seasons of silver medals. Look at her warming up,

:38:52. > :38:53.she is bouncing around, Just hoping she can transfer

:38:54. > :39:00.all of that bounce and energy Britain's other representative

:39:01. > :39:14.is Lorraine Ougan. She qualified at six

:39:15. > :39:18.metres, 65 centimetres. She is getting into it as well,

:39:19. > :39:20.enjoying the samba. Yes, the world indoor

:39:21. > :39:22.bronze medallist. It is warm tonight,

:39:23. > :39:28.no wind to speak of. To have two British athletes

:39:29. > :39:41.in an Olympic final Brittney Reese is the athlete

:39:42. > :39:49.with the biggest lifetime best, Is she the one they will

:39:50. > :39:54.all be chasing, the one Brittney Reese has jumped a jump

:39:55. > :40:02.that was the longest in 14 years, There was talk of a clean

:40:03. > :40:10.sweep for the Americans. I think Brittney Reese is the best

:40:11. > :40:15.of them, absolutely. But the two British athletes,

:40:16. > :40:17.we have seen it tonight If you are in the final,

:40:18. > :40:23.you are in the mix. We will check in with

:40:24. > :40:29.you across the evening. I wonder if I can hire that samba

:40:30. > :40:32.band to bring us into You would like that,

:40:33. > :40:39.Michael. I think we had enough

:40:40. > :40:40.with the all Let's review what went

:40:41. > :40:53.on this morning. It was dominated by distance

:40:54. > :40:55.on the track. Not comfortable for

:40:56. > :41:00.lots of the athletes. Jess Creighton has rounded it

:41:01. > :41:06.up for us. With three Olympic titles

:41:07. > :41:08.already under his belt Mo Farah began his quest

:41:09. > :41:12.to defend his 5000 metres crown. COMMENTATOR: Here we go

:41:13. > :41:15.again with Mo Farah, he has got some familiar figures

:41:16. > :41:19.in this heat. He is going the long way around,

:41:20. > :41:29.he wants to be a bit close. He cannot do anything

:41:30. > :41:39.about it but he needs He fell in the final of the ten,

:41:40. > :41:46.he was tripped with one lap to go, and if he had fallen

:41:47. > :41:48.there his Olympic double dream would have

:41:49. > :41:50.been over completely. He has qualified, he has

:41:51. > :41:52.done it the hard way, now just go away, Mo,

:41:53. > :42:01.and relax a little bit. Next to the starting line

:42:02. > :42:13.was Britain's Lynsey Sharp COMMENTATOR: Sharp in a good

:42:14. > :42:16.position, two to go She looks up to the screen,

:42:17. > :42:23.looks to her right. Lynsey Sharp is not going to be

:42:24. > :42:28.caught, she is going to take She takes second place,

:42:29. > :42:30.behind Lynsey Sharp. A good run, just outside two

:42:31. > :42:34.minutes. I feel in the shape of my life,

:42:35. > :42:40.and I know it will take that to get I am really looking

:42:41. > :42:46.forward to the next round. The second heat was won by a woman

:42:47. > :42:50.who has come under intense scrutiny in the run-up to these

:42:51. > :42:54.Games, Caster Semenya. Her return to her unbeatable best

:42:55. > :43:07.this year has reignited the debate about hyperandrogynism,

:43:08. > :43:09.a condition which causes higher Clarke also made it

:43:10. > :43:12.through to the semifinals on Friday After the success of Sophie Hitchon

:43:13. > :43:19.in the hammer there will be no British competitors

:43:20. > :43:20.in the man's final. Nick Miller, Mark Dry

:43:21. > :43:23.and Chris Bennett all fell short. Not even the favourite and reigning

:43:24. > :43:25.world champion Powell Frederic The ever impressive Ashton Eaton,

:43:26. > :43:32.reigning world and Olympic champion, is used to being the man

:43:33. > :43:38.to beat in the decathlon. COMMENTATOR: He is up

:43:39. > :43:39.against Damian Warner, right there with him.

:43:40. > :43:49.but Ashton Eaton is Warner is going to get there first,

:43:50. > :44:02.as expected, 10.30. Ashton Eaton trailing him in the 100

:44:03. > :44:05.metres, but the long jump ... Looking to defend his title

:44:06. > :44:18.and emulate the great man Daley Thompson, defending his title,

:44:19. > :44:19.double Olympic champion Back on the track, fans

:44:20. > :44:26.were in for a treat as the man's 3000 metres

:44:27. > :44:36.steeplechase got under way. Storming to victory,

:44:37. > :44:40.breaking a 28 year record. COMMENTATOR: Jacob trying to hang

:44:41. > :44:43.on, but he is looking around to see Picking up the pace,

:44:44. > :44:47.he is looking around There is something of the showman

:44:48. > :44:50.around him, but Evan Jaeger on the shoulder of Ezequiel Campbell

:44:51. > :44:53.at the silver medal. Campbell does not seem

:44:54. > :44:55.to have anything left. Another gold medal in

:44:56. > :44:56.this event tenure. Well, not long after the race,

:44:57. > :45:21.the French protested because they said that Kim Boyd

:45:22. > :45:24.stepped off the track, You can see his left foot does

:45:25. > :45:34.indeed just step off the track. Possibly he is doing

:45:35. > :45:36.that to protect himself, we have seen lots of falls

:45:37. > :45:40.in this distance races. That protest was upheld

:45:41. > :45:42.and Kemboi has now had his The medal ceremony

:45:43. > :45:58.is at 11pm tonight. It is worth noting, you cannot see

:45:59. > :46:01.it on the end there, Casey came It is not as though

:46:02. > :46:05.he was on his shoulder. I know it was an infringement but it

:46:06. > :46:08.does seem particularly harsh. I don't think they should

:46:09. > :46:12.have made that call. But I think it is consistent

:46:13. > :46:15.with lots of what we have seen here in terms of the officials

:46:16. > :46:20.and how they have handled different situations, whether it is weather

:46:21. > :46:21.or rerunning heats. Somebody said to me

:46:22. > :46:26.that the officiating here does not seem like it has been very good,

:46:27. > :46:29.and I agreed. I think that is just

:46:30. > :46:31.another example. The officiating has not been great

:46:32. > :46:33.and it affects the athletes. You have officials,

:46:34. > :46:38.and you have a jury that listens to the appeals,

:46:39. > :46:41.and they make a judgement call. That is what they

:46:42. > :46:43.are supposed to do. It is about the rules,

:46:44. > :46:46.yes, but their purpose is to look and see if the athlete

:46:47. > :46:49.gained any advantage. And was there something

:46:50. > :46:52.that was done that was unfair So they should not have allowed

:46:53. > :47:00.the appeal, in my opinion. We will catch up on all the other

:47:01. > :47:04.things that happened this morning and your take on that a bit later,

:47:05. > :47:08.but we really need to get down to the field, because the long jump

:47:09. > :47:10.competition has started, and it has started ferociously,

:47:11. > :47:14.Steve? She did this in the first

:47:15. > :47:34.round, a lifetime best of six The 22-year-old German

:47:35. > :47:37.getting very close to it. The very first jump

:47:38. > :47:39.of the competition. Mihambo has a history of jumping

:47:40. > :47:43.well in the first round and she has So, that was 6.83

:47:44. > :47:54.first up, first dibs. She has laid down a marker

:47:55. > :48:04.for the rest of the field to chase. Darya Klishina looking to respond,

:48:05. > :48:08.the Russian cleared Another long jump, and it has

:48:09. > :48:20.started with a bang. Mihambo 6.83 in that lead,

:48:21. > :48:23.in the early stages. Three jumps and then the top eight

:48:24. > :48:26.will get another three. 14 centimetres to spare

:48:27. > :48:28.for the Russian, I believe the only There was a blanket ban

:48:29. > :48:36.on the team, of course. Jazmin Sawyers, all the smiles have

:48:37. > :48:40.turned to a much more The 22 your old Brit,

:48:41. > :48:56.round one, that is big! Did her left leg just cut

:48:57. > :48:58.the sand there? Just keen to see how

:48:59. > :49:02.she has cut the sand. I think her left foot has

:49:03. > :49:04.let her down. Good on the run up, accelerating

:49:05. > :49:06.onto the board. But look at her left foot

:49:07. > :49:13.there, chopping back. Her left foot just came

:49:14. > :49:19.back on her and cost Reigning Olympic champion and huge

:49:20. > :49:29.favourite, Brittney Reese. Brittney Reese can put this

:49:30. > :49:35.condition to that right That was around seven point 20,

:49:36. > :49:47.that would have put out of reach of everybody,

:49:48. > :49:50.but it is a foul. It will not count and

:49:51. > :49:54.it is not measured. Lorraine Ugen, after that

:49:55. > :50:15.competitive effort indoors. That right foot of hers

:50:16. > :50:35.cost her centimetres. It's so often does, but it

:50:36. > :50:37.pulls her forward. One centimetre ahead

:50:38. > :50:47.of Jazmin Sawyers, in fifth place. Ivana Spanovic,

:50:48. > :50:53.then, the Serbian. She had medals at the last two World

:50:54. > :51:16.Championships, indoors and out. Bronze medallist last year, behind

:51:17. > :51:24.Charlotte Procter, if you remember. She jumped a national

:51:25. > :51:26.record then, of seven Ivana Spanovic takes the lead

:51:27. > :51:29.at the end of round one. Jazmin Sawyers chilling between

:51:30. > :51:33.jumps, and Lorraine They will have to jump further

:51:34. > :51:47.if they want to get near the top of the heat because there

:51:48. > :51:50.are some seriously talented It is likely to be one

:51:51. > :52:00.of these competitions, where the lead changes

:52:01. > :52:02.back and forth. Obviously there are some

:52:03. > :52:09.girls in there who have The second heat of the 400

:52:10. > :52:19.metres to cut long. It is the men who are the slower

:52:20. > :52:39.of the decathletes. I wish they could be

:52:40. > :52:42.like that for every event. It shows the noise can raise.

:52:43. > :52:54.It doesn't always hit that height. They have been good

:52:55. > :52:55.at supporting their athletes. And certainly da Silva

:52:56. > :52:57.benefited from that. We would like to see

:52:58. > :52:59.a little bit more. It is well documented that not

:53:00. > :53:02.all the seats have sold. I have been in other stadiums that

:53:03. > :53:05.have not been as loud. They must have some

:53:06. > :53:08.big vocal chords. Let's have look at the highlights

:53:09. > :53:13.from this morning. A professional passage

:53:14. > :53:25.through four Lynsey Sharp. A professional passage

:53:26. > :53:27.through for Lynsey Sharp. She is confident and

:53:28. > :53:35.prepared to take races She had a PB through

:53:36. > :53:59.that competition. She had to wait nervously to see

:54:00. > :54:06.if her speed would be one of the qualifying

:54:07. > :54:10.as a fastest loser. I think she was the

:54:11. > :54:14.second fastest loser. She was quite sanguine afterwards

:54:15. > :54:18.when she spoke with Phil. She said there were things

:54:19. > :54:22.she would do differently. Are you confident they can go

:54:23. > :54:27.through the semifinals? We have seen with the men and women

:54:28. > :54:32.that it is so tough. It is tight in the top

:54:33. > :54:40.four of the 800 metres. That World Championship really

:54:41. > :54:44.boosted her confidence and what she is able

:54:45. > :54:46.to do in training. And Mo was on the track

:54:47. > :55:02.this morning. He didn't hit the deck,

:55:03. > :55:06.as many seem to be doing. I really thought he

:55:07. > :55:16.was going to go down. He had accelerated in the race

:55:17. > :55:19.to get into a good position. The athlete just behind

:55:20. > :55:26.him hit the deck. There have also been a lot

:55:27. > :55:39.of tumbles in the hurdles. We have seen them around the last

:55:40. > :55:46.couple of days. There seem to be more athletes

:55:47. > :55:51.than normal hitting the deck. I think that, I was thinking

:55:52. > :55:54.about it earlier in it would be in the distance races

:55:55. > :55:59.but I think with the quick track, which we alluded to earlier,

:56:00. > :56:01.that fast track that it is, it is a very hard surface,

:56:02. > :56:04.that makes it quick and it causes lots of problems for hurdlers,

:56:05. > :56:07.which we saw in the 400 metres, the 100 metre hurdles,

:56:08. > :56:10.the 110 metre hurdles for the men, Bartoletta, a foul

:56:11. > :56:31.in the first round. The American world

:56:32. > :56:40.champion last year. And ten years ago she first

:56:41. > :56:43.was world champion. She is a contender for

:56:44. > :56:51.the Olympic title as well. And she has watched athletes jump

:56:52. > :57:31.out towards seven metres. Jazmin Sawyers took to her

:57:32. > :57:33.lifetime best of 6.75. She is so good at getting

:57:34. > :57:44.everything out of herself. It is better, 6.69, she goes

:57:45. > :57:56.into sixth place. I think she tried to

:57:57. > :58:13.make sure that her foot Otherwise she would have been under

:58:14. > :58:22.immense pressure. Look at that, 20

:58:23. > :58:33.centimetres of extra space. No one has ever defended a women's

:58:34. > :58:35.long jump title Reese, 6.79, fourth place,

:58:36. > :58:46.to confirm she will have Her teammate has taken

:58:47. > :58:56.the lead early on. That was a big stutter

:58:57. > :59:03.and that has to be a foul. I think she put in a couple

:59:04. > :59:08.of extra strides. Athletes have marks

:59:09. > :59:14.and almost hit the same spot. And that is what Lorraine

:59:15. > :59:16.is going to want to do Asking the crowd to join in,

:59:17. > :59:24.as they do. 6.92 her best from last

:59:25. > :59:35.year and oh, she would So, Ugen's 6.56 in the first round,

:59:36. > :59:59.10th place, she will have to improve on that because only the top eight

:00:00. > :00:10.get the final three jumps. So at the moment it is

:00:11. > :00:13.Spanovic who is first up, She led the World Championships last

:00:14. > :00:27.year for a while but then saw She knows she will

:00:28. > :00:36.have to extend this. Big strides, turning to sprinting

:00:37. > :00:49.strides on the runway, That is a long way

:00:50. > :00:54.but it is a red flag. I suppose if you are in the lead,

:00:55. > :01:03.you are given the chance to really go for it and take the risk to get

:01:04. > :01:13.a big jump out, Spanovic foul. Lorraine Ugen, she will be a little

:01:14. > :01:24.bit disappointed with that, On the track, you have the early

:01:25. > :01:36.heats of the men's 400 metres decathlon, the last

:01:37. > :01:39.of the day for them. And in the final heat, it goes

:01:40. > :01:43.in order of speed and personal best, Ashton Eaton leading the way

:01:44. > :01:45.in the competition, the Olympic champion of course

:01:46. > :01:47.and world champion hoping to retain his Olympic title,

:01:48. > :01:50.so to bring you through the story It has been a warm day

:01:51. > :01:59.for the decathlon and they started first thing this morning

:02:00. > :02:02.in the sunshine. Damian Warner from Canada

:02:03. > :02:06.was leading Ashton Eaton As expected, Ashton Eaton

:02:07. > :02:12.went to the long jump for his second round attempt,

:02:13. > :02:14.after 7.9 in the first round, and he improved it with that

:02:15. > :02:21.in the second round, 7.94, further than last year

:02:22. > :02:24.when he broke his own world record. So he was looking good

:02:25. > :02:29.after two events. This was his third attempt and his

:02:30. > :02:31.best of that competition. He is trying to give Ashton Eaton

:02:32. > :02:48.something to think about. And in the shotput,

:02:49. > :02:52.14.73, better last year. So, then the athletes moved across

:02:53. > :03:08.to the high jump. Damian Warner was better,

:03:09. > :03:26.though, with 2.04. What about this, the United States,

:03:27. > :03:47.Jeremy with this clearance in the high jump, a massive

:03:48. > :03:50.clearance of 2.19, with a best of 2.25, so we knew he would be good

:03:51. > :03:54.but he has shot up into the bronze Fourth event with just

:03:55. > :04:05.the 400 metres to come, Ashton Eaton just 27 points shy

:04:06. > :04:11.where he was in his world record attempt, his successful world record

:04:12. > :04:19.last year, 50 points ahead and it is 77 points, in fact,

:04:20. > :04:23.cleared the first four. The Frenchman had an

:04:24. > :04:34.excellent first day. Here is Eaton getting ready

:04:35. > :04:37.for his 400 metres to conclude STUDIO: Ashton Eaton is fairly

:04:38. > :04:41.consistent through the ten, maybe as you saw a little off

:04:42. > :04:44.the pace in the high jump, but if he has an outstanding

:04:45. > :04:48.event, this will be it. This is it, this is amazing, he has

:04:49. > :04:51.been amazing in the 400 metres, running almost 44 seconds,

:04:52. > :04:53.and I believe he believes he can run 44 seconds,

:04:54. > :04:56.and he has been working on that in the last year, and he is one

:04:57. > :04:59.of those people who is very meticulous, he is sort of a nerd,

:05:00. > :05:02.always studying the sport, and so he, you know,

:05:03. > :05:10.feels like this is his opportunity. I think what is interesting

:05:11. > :05:13.is I think he is an amazing competitor and he rarely comes under

:05:14. > :05:15.pressure from other competitors, It is starting to look

:05:16. > :05:24.like that is happening. It will be interesting to see

:05:25. > :05:27.what he can bring when Unless you have anything to add,

:05:28. > :05:37.shall we go to commentary? I think, as Michael has said,

:05:38. > :05:41.he is so intensely... Such a perfectionist with this

:05:42. > :05:44.event, and he is rarely challenged. He has to be strong to keep pushing

:05:45. > :05:48.himself, pushing his own personal barriers to get the best

:05:49. > :05:49.out of himself. And while he is so pre-eminent,

:05:50. > :06:05.is it the case that everyone is them against the decathlon rather

:06:06. > :06:07.than being intimidated by him? Yes, they will help each other

:06:08. > :06:11.in pole vault and high jump, you know, they get on really well,

:06:12. > :06:14.but there is a huge He is not the tallest athlete

:06:15. > :06:21.there has ever been in the decathlon but he is the fastest,

:06:22. > :06:23.the most consistent, And when the come back

:06:24. > :06:34.after the race, I want to know why we don't have any men at the moment

:06:35. > :06:37.in the decathlon. We had such a rich period

:06:38. > :06:39.with Thompson, but no one at the moment representing

:06:40. > :06:51.Great Britain. We will watch this one

:06:52. > :06:54.man, Andrew Cotter. There are a couple of decathletes

:06:55. > :06:56.for Britain, but not And David Thompson before

:06:57. > :07:04.that, of course. 45 seconds is the PB

:07:05. > :07:14.of Ashton Eaton. And he has run 45.63 this

:07:15. > :07:21.season in Houston. The Olympic decathlon

:07:22. > :07:34.best was set in 1960. So that might well

:07:35. > :07:36.mean that goes here. And Damian Warner,

:07:37. > :07:38.he is quick over 400, 46.54 with a new personal

:07:39. > :07:40.best this season. They are first and second

:07:41. > :07:49.at the moment. So, the Estonian, the Canadian,

:07:50. > :07:54.Lindon Victor from Ashton Eaton, he is just 27 points

:07:55. > :08:11.down on his world record pace He was a little bit off his best

:08:12. > :08:18.in the hundred metres if that gives you some indication,

:08:19. > :08:24.but 400 is his real strength. Look out for Eaton, look out

:08:25. > :08:32.for Warner and Kazmirek. He is a sprinter, a runner, and he

:08:33. > :08:55.is up against some heavier men. In first and second and fifth

:08:56. > :09:10.place, in Ashton Eaton. Kazmirek, the German

:09:11. > :09:12.going strongly in lane eight. Ashton Eaton has gone

:09:13. > :09:17.on hard, he is going By his standards, a little

:09:18. > :09:29.bit disappointing. He will extend his lead over

:09:30. > :09:32.Damian Warner before we head into tomorrow's events,

:09:33. > :09:39.the 110 metre hurdles, the discus, the pole vault,

:09:40. > :09:41.the javelin, the 1500 metres. Good run by Kazmirek, who says,

:09:42. > :09:44.leave me alone, I'm dying here. Ashton Eaton is so comfortable

:09:45. > :09:57.in this event, but you can see how As we see him coming

:09:58. > :10:02.down the home straight, inside on the left of screen,

:10:03. > :10:05.Damian Warner could do nothing about Not quite as brilliant as last year

:10:06. > :10:10.when he ran 45 flat over this But it is a significant performance

:10:11. > :10:17.on what has been a very hot day. The athletes have been out

:10:18. > :10:19.here all day managing their energy. It has been 35 degrees and humid

:10:20. > :10:22.even into the evening. Ashton Eaton trying to squeeze

:10:23. > :10:27.everything out of that. But Ashton Eaton stretches his lead

:10:28. > :10:50.at the top, overall. So, that was the leaders

:10:51. > :10:53.in the decathlon. This is another look at those

:10:54. > :10:55.leaders' points scores Ashton Eaton is one of only two

:10:56. > :11:06.men who has ever gone beyond Kazmirek improving his

:11:07. > :11:13.chances of a medal. Tianna Bartoletta in round

:11:14. > :11:24.three of the long jump. She is in second place

:11:25. > :11:31.by just one centimetre. A smile on the face

:11:32. > :11:39.of Tianna Bartoletta. She ran in 11 seconds flat

:11:40. > :11:42.and didn't make the final Good running into acceleration

:11:43. > :11:46.there. She's seemed to really run

:11:47. > :11:48.into herself, with 16 centimetres to add to this,

:11:49. > :11:53.to show her potential. 6.95, taking the lead

:11:54. > :11:59.courtesy of count back. Jazmin Sawyers,

:12:00. > :12:19.6.69. Just ever so slight deceleration,

:12:20. > :12:22.when you compare that to the speed Jazmin Sawyers currently

:12:23. > :12:30.in seventh place. Just to remind you, the top eight

:12:31. > :12:38.get the final three jumps, ready for his 200 metres

:12:39. > :13:09.semi-final. You have stayed up this late,

:13:10. > :13:12.you may as well stay for this. We have three British athletes

:13:13. > :13:17.in those semifinals, Danny Talbot and Nethaneel

:13:18. > :13:21.Mitchell-Blake. And in Bolt's heat of

:13:22. > :13:23.the semifinals, we also have Adam Gemili, a man who always runs

:13:24. > :13:35.with a smile on his face. It is a crazy feeling to be

:13:36. > :13:39.going into my second Olympic Games. I feel very different

:13:40. > :13:43.to how I felt in London. I didn't really expect

:13:44. > :13:51.to do anything. Now I am coming in and I want to go

:13:52. > :13:55.out and compete and be a contender I am coming into this

:13:56. > :13:58.one with a different 9.85, third in an Olympic

:13:59. > :14:11.semi-final at the age of 18. What London predominantly taught me

:14:12. > :14:20.was to believe in myself. Now I come into the sport

:14:21. > :14:23.and I go into every race thinking I can win it,

:14:24. > :14:26.no matter who is in the race, no matter what they

:14:27. > :14:28.have run beforehand. I go into every race

:14:29. > :14:30.believing in my own ability, and I didn't really do

:14:31. > :14:32.that in London. I only missed out on the final

:14:33. > :14:38.by four hundredths of a second, which was not a massive amount,

:14:39. > :14:41.but if I had had more belief, I tore my hamstring pretty nastily

:14:42. > :14:55.last year. I was gutted because it put me out

:14:56. > :15:04.from the whole season. I have been bouncing back

:15:05. > :15:07.and hopefully I continue to do so. I was quite disappointed

:15:08. > :15:28.afterwards because I thought But it was a good field,

:15:29. > :15:34.guys who had been running very fast. Lots of those guys had run 19

:15:35. > :15:37.seconds and I did actually It gives me good confidence to come

:15:38. > :15:50.back out to training come out here in the sun,

:15:51. > :15:52.and get some good work in. I know that when Rio comes I will be

:15:53. > :15:56.on my best shape and will hopefully Well, he made a global final

:15:57. > :16:00.in Moscow, and the progression seems Do you feel that that injury last

:16:01. > :16:04.year, and missing out on the World Championships,

:16:05. > :16:07.took him back a little bit? That is what happens

:16:08. > :16:10.when you have an injury like that. I mean, he ran under 20 seconds

:16:11. > :16:19.in 2013, matched it again in 2014. If you take the injury out he has

:16:20. > :16:25.been very consistent, Glasgow was a year where he went

:16:26. > :16:30.back significantly, you know, Many would say, OK,

:16:31. > :16:36.what is going on here? Because he is not as

:16:37. > :16:41.happy with his times. I think this season it has taken him

:16:42. > :16:44.a while to get back, as it would for anyone,

:16:45. > :16:47.but I think he is coming around Because after you come off

:16:48. > :16:59.an injury like that, especially a hamstring injury,

:17:00. > :17:01.it is tough to get How did the training go back

:17:02. > :17:04.in the fall, who knows. It is tough to say that this year

:17:05. > :17:08.we should expect more. You have had a close look

:17:09. > :17:12.at the phases of his race for us. Yes, and one of the things

:17:13. > :17:15.about Adam is that he is just He has a natural ability

:17:16. > :17:20.to be very symmetrical, He has got the right size and build

:17:21. > :17:31.for the 200 metres. Everything is just extremely

:17:32. > :17:37.symmetrical here. He runs very well,

:17:38. > :17:42.he is very balanced. The main thing is how you execute

:17:43. > :17:46.the race when you are in it. There, he was on the outside

:17:47. > :17:58.of the lane and he didn't get the best start

:17:59. > :17:59.yesterday in the heats. He is not out of position at this

:18:00. > :18:03.point because he is not running the same sorts of times

:18:04. > :18:06.he was running at 13 and 14. He has to go out there

:18:07. > :18:09.and execute to perfection. To give himself a chance of getting

:18:10. > :18:11.into the finals. Out in the warmup area, well,

:18:12. > :18:16.I am not sure anybody needs a warmup area because it is boiling,

:18:17. > :18:19.I think they are in the shaded area. We can see Yohan Blake

:18:20. > :18:21.and Usain Bolt, just You have been looking

:18:22. > :18:32.at Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin. Justin Gatlin, he has

:18:33. > :18:39.an unorthodox style. He bends at the waist,

:18:40. > :18:42.which is not what you normally do. It allows him to create a tremendous

:18:43. > :18:47.amount of power and downforce. As he is stepping on the track,

:18:48. > :18:51.he is putting more force. If we could measure the force

:18:52. > :18:54.of each athlete and what they are putting into the ground,

:18:55. > :18:56.he is putting significantly more Now he is relaxing because of

:18:57. > :19:01.the very quick start We talk about him a lot

:19:02. > :19:05.as a 100 metre runner, but he is a fantastic

:19:06. > :19:07.200 metre runner. I believe he may be thinking,

:19:08. > :19:13.is this my opportunity? It is certainly his last opportunity

:19:14. > :19:19.against this man, Usain Bolt, in order for him to possibly take

:19:20. > :19:25.away a championship title. In contrast to Adam Gemili

:19:26. > :19:28.and Justin Gatlin, Usain Bolt rocks He is so much better than everybody

:19:29. > :19:43.else because of what happens He is so quick and he has

:19:44. > :19:47.such a big stride. What he is doing up top,

:19:48. > :19:50.which is very inefficient, The other guys can't

:19:51. > :19:56.afford to do that. That is the contrast

:19:57. > :19:58.and the difference Sean Merrett, of course,

:19:59. > :20:02.he was not very happy with his medal He really thought that he would

:20:03. > :20:12.have a shot at glory. He will be wanting to get

:20:13. > :20:15.himself in the mix. He has got a significant opportunity

:20:16. > :20:20.here, and he knows it. To come away from a career

:20:21. > :20:24.standpoint being a 400 metre Olympic gold-medallist,

:20:25. > :20:30.a 400 metre bronze medallist, which he got the other day,

:20:31. > :20:33.and then to bring home any sort of medal in the 200 metres,

:20:34. > :20:40.he has been a 400 metre runner for all of his career,

:20:41. > :20:46.which dates back to 2005, that will be significant

:20:47. > :20:48.and he will be aware of that. He is a good position,

:20:49. > :20:51.a dangerous position the others. Nobody is going to say,

:20:52. > :20:54.old, it is Sean Merrett, I can't believe you let those 200

:20:55. > :21:06.metre guys beat you. Danny Talbot, gravy

:21:07. > :21:17.is the last thing I would want COMMENTATOR: Well, we have

:21:18. > :21:21.got jellybeans. Paula Radcliffe is in the stadium

:21:22. > :21:34.tonight and is providing I am going to ask

:21:35. > :21:37.a rhetorical question. What you think it took to get

:21:38. > :21:40.into the final as the Bearing in mind in the final,

:21:41. > :21:44.four men ran under 20 seconds. Christian Malcolm was

:21:45. > :21:59.third in his semi-final, The big guys, you would

:22:00. > :22:04.imagine, would be. If they are not in the top two, that

:22:05. > :22:14.might be all that is required. Christophe Lemaitre had his best

:22:15. > :22:23.the other year, 19.80. A brilliant run in the heats

:22:24. > :22:25.the Daniel Talbot. He has obviously got

:22:26. > :22:32.a chance to excel, to try That is all he can really do

:22:33. > :22:36.against Sean Merrett, A world record race a few days ago,

:22:37. > :22:49.it seems so long ago now. Herrera, the new

:22:50. > :23:04.Mexican recordholder. A huge experience, don't

:23:05. > :23:11.forget Jamaica had a one Quakers back, to make up

:23:12. > :23:25.the threesome this time. Brenes of Costa Rica been going very

:23:26. > :23:29.well, a new national record qualifying for this semifinal

:23:30. > :23:32.yet to break the 20s. The Trinidad man who won

:23:33. > :23:52.a medal in this event. So, Merrit, the quickest

:23:53. > :23:58.in the field, but it might not Not the quickest starter,

:23:59. > :24:13.not in his current form, The tall Aaron Brown

:24:14. > :24:19.in lane two of Canada. So, the top two, and the two fastest

:24:20. > :24:23.losers from the three He has taken a good two

:24:24. > :24:44.metres out of Merrit. Sorrillo has run a killer bent

:24:45. > :24:48.but Merrit is leading. And look at this, Lemaitre, well,

:24:49. > :24:56.there is a surprise! The Frenchman gets through and

:24:57. > :25:04.the rest were a little bit distant. Christophe where did

:25:05. > :25:08.you get that from? Really good performance

:25:09. > :25:10.from the Frenchman and look I can tell you, Danny Talbot

:25:11. > :25:23.did what he had to do, just, with third spot

:25:24. > :25:25.and a new personal best. The new personal best

:25:26. > :25:42.and that was a great run from him. He was not intimidated

:25:43. > :25:56.by anyone in the field. And Merrit looks so balanced,

:25:57. > :25:58.bouncing down the track, We have seen this on numerous

:25:59. > :26:14.occasions, when he is at his best, he seems to haul people in,

:26:15. > :26:21.and he has managed to do that again. Well, it was a great start

:26:22. > :26:30.there from Danny Talbot, taking a little bit out of Merrit

:26:31. > :26:33.early, up on Christophe Lemaitre, and LaShawn Merritt

:26:34. > :26:37.looks so relaxed. Very surprising,

:26:38. > :26:38.Christophe Lemaitre after A little bit of rocking back

:26:39. > :26:54.and forth in contrast to Lemaitre with Danny Talbot,

:26:55. > :27:10.but the speed injury to Lemaitre with Danny Talbot,

:27:11. > :27:12.but the speed endurance and that he allows him to get

:27:13. > :27:15.through to the finish and qualified, Well, you said yesterday

:27:16. > :27:18.you wanted a PB. You have a great chance of making

:27:19. > :27:21.the final. Tell me about the race

:27:22. > :27:27.from your perspective, because you had Lemaitre

:27:28. > :27:42.on the outside, surprisingly doing better than recently,

:27:43. > :27:44.dragging you through as well. To be honest, I had a really good

:27:45. > :27:48.start and then I almost relaxed Looking at the replay,

:27:49. > :27:52.I was very cautious around the bend, trying to leave something

:27:53. > :27:54.for the home straight, and maybe a should have gone harder,

:27:55. > :27:57.but I did run a personal best. So you are telling me

:27:58. > :28:00.there is more to come off that Every athlete thinks

:28:01. > :28:05.they have more in the locker, that is true for me,

:28:06. > :28:09.but we will have to wait and see. Hopefully I get into

:28:10. > :28:11.the final and then tomorrow You have done so well

:28:12. > :28:15.tonight, well done. STUDIO: Yeah, excellent run

:28:16. > :28:26.from Danny Talbot, 20.25. Plenty of athletes to come

:28:27. > :28:29.in the semifinals. Merritt is through and,

:28:30. > :28:33.surprisingly, Lemaitre, a return to form for the tall

:28:34. > :28:39.Frenchman. Well, you might have

:28:40. > :28:41.heard the slight increase in volume in the stadium

:28:42. > :28:46.and that was when Usain Bolt He looks like he means business

:28:47. > :28:49.tonight. He is not doing quite as much

:28:50. > :28:52.playful banter with the crowd. We have seen this a little bit,

:28:53. > :29:02.he has been a little bit more serious and I was wondering if,

:29:03. > :29:09.you know, how his approach was gonna be to this,

:29:10. > :29:11.and he wasn't thrilled so I think he knows he might

:29:12. > :29:15.be under a little more Yes, part of a very

:29:16. > :29:22.strong semi-final here. You see Andre De Grasse outside him,

:29:23. > :29:26.and just outside him is Adam Gemili. There is a smile but we have

:29:27. > :29:31.talked about it, I think he is a different animal now,

:29:32. > :29:35.it is a smile that is combined with the steel as well,

:29:36. > :29:41.he is serious when he gets going. And Andre De Grasse,

:29:42. > :29:47.bronze in the 100, a season best So, with Gemili and De Grasse,

:29:48. > :29:52.the fastest loser will certainly be under threat, but the welcome,

:29:53. > :30:12.again, to we all know who. I don't even need to say his name,

:30:13. > :30:19.it doesn't need to be mentioned. Yaqoob from Bahrain with a very

:30:20. > :30:29.surprising 20.19 to take a big And Webb, he didn't look very

:30:30. > :30:39.impressive in the first round. And the Cuban, Skyers,

:30:40. > :30:49.in the first lane. So, a full look at the lineup,

:30:50. > :30:54.because the two men outside the lineup with Gemili who we didn't

:30:55. > :31:00.see, the Turkish athlete. So, Bolt once again,

:31:01. > :31:08.asks for silence. Gemili was only two lanes inside

:31:09. > :31:11.of him at the Anniversary Games And he said after his first-round

:31:12. > :31:15.heat, Gemili, that he felt On the inside he was in the second

:31:16. > :31:23.lane, here he is in the sixth lane, two will go through automatically

:31:24. > :31:25.and Danny Talbot hanging on, the first of the fastest

:31:26. > :31:30.losers with 20.25. Gemili is looking good,

:31:31. > :31:33.but Bolt is moving around. It is Bolt and he might have

:31:34. > :31:49.got him on the line. The quickest time for him this

:31:50. > :31:57.season in the 200 metres. A shake of the head replaces

:31:58. > :32:07.the smile from Gemili. The fastest losers include Gemili

:32:08. > :32:25.but they are in a good position with one semi-final

:32:26. > :32:27.to go. He has an excellent

:32:28. > :32:29.chance of hanging on. The next semi-final

:32:30. > :32:36.is loaded with talent. Out of the blocks, we were all

:32:37. > :32:41.watching Usain Bolt. My eyes were fixed on De Grasse

:32:42. > :32:44.from Canada and his battle with Gemili because I think

:32:45. > :32:49.they will be battling You can see when they come

:32:50. > :32:53.to the home straight, He has faster basic speed,

:32:54. > :33:07.lots of endurance as you can see, as it is demonstrated,

:33:08. > :33:10.easily away from Adam. Laughing and joking

:33:11. > :33:15.with Usain Bolt as he approaches Well, it was a great

:33:16. > :33:24.start from Bolt. Very nice around the bend,

:33:25. > :33:27.Gemili, and a good transition, but then he got really tight right

:33:28. > :33:33.here, and just look at Gemili in contrast to De Grasse and Bolt

:33:34. > :33:35.and he just got really, The shoulders up high and that

:33:36. > :33:40.makes it very tough. The more you tighten up at the end

:33:41. > :33:43.of this, the less efficient you become, and it just tightens

:33:44. > :33:46.up and it gets tougher This was an interesting run

:33:47. > :33:54.from Bolt, he was out fast and quick, he let off the gas

:33:55. > :33:57.a little and De Grasse decided to come up and get him,

:33:58. > :34:01.so a little banter between them, having a little fun,

:34:02. > :34:04.Gemili had a quick time. There is more for him

:34:05. > :34:07.if he runs that race. If he gets into the finals and he

:34:08. > :34:14.can relax on the home stretch. So, Adam, advice from

:34:15. > :34:17.Michael Johnson to relax on the home straight and you will go faster

:34:18. > :34:20.and you will be, hopefully, in the I am in a lot better

:34:21. > :34:28.shape than 20.08. Usain Bolt, have a word with the

:34:29. > :34:39.BBC, just quickly. You stormed through and played

:34:40. > :34:41.a couple of games He was supposed to slow down

:34:42. > :34:48.but he didn't. I was saying, what are you doing,

:34:49. > :34:51.it is the semifinals. He said he had to push

:34:52. > :34:55.me, so whatever. You said you were tight

:34:56. > :34:57.after the 100 but you are not Steve called you a legend when you

:34:58. > :35:17.did the double four years ago. What if you end up doing the sprint

:35:18. > :35:19.double tomorrow? When I crossed the line,

:35:20. > :35:23.he said I am immortal He is the man and we have

:35:24. > :35:39.to grab them when we can. Your performance, you are clearly

:35:40. > :35:42.not very happy, and yet 20.08, It is good but I expect

:35:43. > :35:48.better from myself. And I know I am in good shape,

:35:49. > :35:51.I am in better shape than that, and it wasn't a very well executed

:35:52. > :35:55.run, like I said, it was very tight, and I didn't run my own race,

:35:56. > :35:58.but 20.08, I might make the final and hopefully if it does

:35:59. > :36:05.I will get it right tomorrow. With all of the people that

:36:06. > :36:08.are waiting up it is not amazing De Grasse had something important

:36:09. > :36:20.to say to Usain Bolt Stop running so hard, I don't want

:36:21. > :36:30.to have to do this to you. Gemili a chance to go

:36:31. > :36:41.through as a fastest loser. Gemili in the fastest

:36:42. > :36:57.loser position. We are into round five

:36:58. > :37:01.of the long jump, and Reese has two fouls on the bounce,

:37:02. > :37:09.so the best so far is 6.79. Oh, it is another big jump

:37:10. > :37:16.from Reese, this time it is white. And Reese, as expected,

:37:17. > :37:21.well, the pressure was mounting. Here in round five it looks

:37:22. > :37:24.as though she has done something to gain the lead

:37:25. > :37:28.that she was expected to do. 7.09, she is comfortably

:37:29. > :37:31.into the lead. Well, at the other end

:37:32. > :37:35.of the stadium, Walcott from Trinidad Tobago,

:37:36. > :37:41.the youngest man to win the title Well, that is easily the best

:37:42. > :37:51.we have seen so far. He came through this season

:37:52. > :37:54.not looking great. I have said to many

:37:55. > :38:00.who were watching... When you have won once

:38:01. > :38:05.there is a bit of pride. That is a big throw,

:38:06. > :38:08.that is close to 90 metres. His lifetime best is 90 metres

:38:09. > :38:10.and 16 centimetres. metres and at the moment,

:38:11. > :38:32.Adam Gemili is in a It was important that he finish in

:38:33. > :38:37.third position there. He made a dip to get

:38:38. > :38:46.third ahead of Guliyev. I wonder if he caught a glimpse

:38:47. > :38:59.as they were waiting to come out A new national record

:39:00. > :39:10.for Canada from De Grasse. Usain Bolt had to run a little

:39:11. > :39:13.harder than he wanted to. He missed the British

:39:14. > :39:20.record earlier this year. He was at Louisiana State

:39:21. > :39:27.University. He says he has always been British

:39:28. > :39:35.and ran in the British junior team for a couple of years and has now

:39:36. > :39:38.entered the senior team Blake will try and make it at least

:39:39. > :39:57.two Jamaicans in the final. He has been running quite well this

:39:58. > :40:07.year, rediscovering good form. The European champion

:40:08. > :40:15.at the 100 metre. He has a tendency to run

:40:16. > :40:18.on the line in the 200 metre, Yohan Blake, the silver-medallist

:40:19. > :40:29.in an incredibly quick time behind The fastest non-

:40:30. > :40:41.winning 200 metre time. Alonso Edward, you can go back

:40:42. > :40:45.to Berlin and this is the man who followed him home

:40:46. > :40:51.and he was only 19. Hortelano, the new European champion

:40:52. > :40:53.because Martina ran ahead He was not booed as much at this

:40:54. > :41:18.time as he was in the 100 metres. He reached the final

:41:19. > :41:27.in the European champions. And then on the inside,

:41:28. > :41:29.Tsakonas of Greece. He made it through to this semi

:41:30. > :41:44.with a personal best. Justin Gatlin from lane three,

:41:45. > :41:46.lanes six, seven and eight. In fact, I have only

:41:47. > :41:50.ignored two of them. The time to watch for Adam Gemili is

:41:51. > :42:17.20.08. And Yohan Blake makes

:42:18. > :42:20.a cracking start. Edward is coming and so was

:42:21. > :42:26.Justin Gatlin and Mitchell-Blake He comes Martina and

:42:27. > :42:37.Gatlin has dropped out. I will repeat that, Justin Gatlin

:42:38. > :42:47.is not in the final. Gemili will make it through and that

:42:48. > :42:55.means that Guliyev will join him That was a difficult semifinal

:42:56. > :43:12.and it was anyone's race. Mitchell-Blake was perhaps the only

:43:13. > :43:14.one not in with a chance It was an exciting semifinal,

:43:15. > :43:20.wasn't it? I think this is what we like to see

:43:21. > :43:24.in athletics when a race with big names is competitive and people,

:43:25. > :43:27.sometimes, they merely forget, people you just forget

:43:28. > :43:30.and they sneak through. Alonso Edward has been a medallist

:43:31. > :43:36.in major championships before. He kept a cool head with all

:43:37. > :43:39.of the big names around him and managed to ease himself

:43:40. > :43:41.through to a final Justin Gatlin trying

:43:42. > :43:53.to stick with him. It will be interesting

:43:54. > :43:55.to see the head on vision, Yohan Blake and Justin Gatlin got

:43:56. > :44:12.amazing starts and blasted out. It looked as if they were both

:44:13. > :44:15.going to take control of the race They all come off the bend together

:44:16. > :44:23.and what Justin Gatlin does is make He did not realise that

:44:24. > :44:31.they were up on him. He thought he was the best

:44:32. > :44:33.and he thought he had He then tried to get back into it

:44:34. > :44:38.but it was far too late and he could not get back into it

:44:39. > :44:42.with the class of field like this. Alonso Edward took advantage

:44:43. > :44:47.of that mistake and ran Martina also getting himself back

:44:48. > :44:59.in it, getting back into a final. Very close on the line

:45:00. > :45:06.but no doubt about it, Yohan Blake, I am sure the issue

:45:07. > :45:19.with him is that he has had so much time off and he was not able to run

:45:20. > :45:23.under 20 seconds and probably went out far too fast for the condition

:45:24. > :45:27.and the shape he is in. He gave it everything

:45:28. > :45:32.he could but it was not to be, given he has returned from injury

:45:33. > :45:36.and has not had the sort of training that would allow him

:45:37. > :45:44.to sustain that speed. He must have known and recognised

:45:45. > :45:47.the mistake he made. Remember I said at the beginning

:45:48. > :45:56.of the semifinals, I said in 2012, 20.37 was good enough to go

:45:57. > :45:58.through as fastest loser. That third race was the slowest

:45:59. > :46:14.of the three but it was dramatic. No Yohan Blake, no Justin Gatlin

:46:15. > :46:16.in the final. Usain Bolt will head the qualifiers,

:46:17. > :46:21.like always. And Gemili and Guliyev

:46:22. > :46:37.are the two fastest losers. Churandy Martina has made his third

:46:38. > :46:39.Olympic 200 metre final We are in the fifth

:46:40. > :46:46.round of the long Pushed into third place

:46:47. > :47:00.with a big jump by Reese. Well, this possibly

:47:01. > :47:10.looks over seven metres. She has produced something special

:47:11. > :47:40.in this fifth round. They are feeding off each other as

:47:41. > :47:47.they so often do. A lifetime best for Bartoletta

:47:48. > :47:54.in the fifth round. Absolutely enormous

:47:55. > :48:05.leap for Bartoletta. There are many Dutch people

:48:06. > :48:19.in the house tonight and there is a lot of orange around

:48:20. > :48:22.and when Martina went And Daphne Schippers

:48:23. > :48:39.is coming up shortly. This is the event where she will

:48:40. > :48:42.feel she can do well. It is the event where

:48:43. > :48:44.she think she can dominate. She has been consistent this year

:48:45. > :48:48.and has not run as fast this year is she did last year,

:48:49. > :48:50.when she shocked the world at the World Championships

:48:51. > :48:52.in Beijing but this She will know that her main

:48:53. > :48:59.competition will be It will be a difficult race

:49:00. > :49:07.and I expect it to be tight. She will probably not lead

:49:08. > :49:14.at the beginning but what we will see is at the end she has a long

:49:15. > :49:18.stride and is able to do some Like what we see him in the second

:49:19. > :49:23.half of the 200 metre race, She was hanging onto ways to see

:49:24. > :49:31.if she qualified as fastest loser. She made the final in last

:49:32. > :49:38.year as well. You can look at her

:49:39. > :49:41.and Dafne for us. Looking at Dina, another similarity

:49:42. > :49:44.with Adam Gemili is that she is very If you watch you do not see

:49:45. > :50:01.a lot of wasted motion. She is a great size for this event

:50:02. > :50:04.and she can navigate In contrast, Schippers cannot

:50:05. > :50:07.navigate the bend well. Dina, going backwards,

:50:08. > :50:10.has a disadvantage with a shorter stride and without having what looks

:50:11. > :50:13.like having a lot of speed and endurance or has not been

:50:14. > :50:16.effective in terms of that because you saw her

:50:17. > :50:17.going backwards there. She has focused more on the 100

:50:18. > :50:20.metres this year. She got a little ragged and seemed

:50:21. > :50:24.tired in a particular race but Schippers is the class

:50:25. > :50:27.of the field and Dina will need to get back to her personal best

:50:28. > :50:30.of 22.07 to even get close 200 metres, with saw

:50:31. > :50:42.a qualification for this, it is equally strong

:50:43. > :50:56.as the 100 metre field. A world-class long jump

:50:57. > :50:58.around a terrific athlete. Had a wonderful 100 metre race,

:50:59. > :51:01.got a silver medal for. She brings the 100 metre speed,

:51:02. > :51:14.is quite quick around the bend. And quite efficient as an athlete,

:51:15. > :51:17.which you need to be here. She also has the ability

:51:18. > :51:19.to pull away from the field I expect that she and Schippers

:51:20. > :51:29.will be extremely close coming The Dutch are making

:51:30. > :51:37.their presence felt here tonight. There is a lot of orange around

:51:38. > :51:43.and lots of chanting as well. Fun chanting, it must be said,

:51:44. > :51:45.and they are getting They want to see their hero

:51:46. > :51:54.Dafne win gold tonight. It is a big night

:51:55. > :52:00.for Dafne and Holland. They will stayed up to watch this

:52:01. > :52:03.because she is a poster girl. She has brought everyone together

:52:04. > :52:05.tonight because they believe that she has a realistic opportunity

:52:06. > :52:11.of gaining an Olympic title. It is incredible, the transformation

:52:12. > :52:14.she has made over the last few She ran 21.96 in the semifinal

:52:15. > :52:26.so she will be difficult to beat. Denise was dressed tonight

:52:27. > :52:28.to support Dafne. I trained for a while in Holland

:52:29. > :52:41.so this is a bit of a nod for them. Let's hand over now

:52:42. > :52:49.for the 200 metre final. Looking as if this could be

:52:50. > :52:53.an all-time classic here. Do not forget Dina Asher-Smith,

:52:54. > :53:01.from Great Britain, By her own admission not running

:53:02. > :53:06.particularly well, not as well she would like more as well she did

:53:07. > :53:24.last year but she is in the final. Ahye of Trinidad, they have

:53:25. > :53:31.never had a finalist. Oh, they need to swap

:53:32. > :53:39.seats, don't they? I think the guy with the G

:53:40. > :53:44.is not paying attention. You can go back to 1948,

:53:45. > :53:56.the first time this event was held in the Olympic Games,

:53:57. > :53:58.it was one by the great Dutch Jamaica have had some heroes,

:53:59. > :54:09.a hero of Elaine Thompson. A lot of history tied up in this

:54:10. > :54:13.race, or tradition shall we say, they are all looking

:54:14. > :54:15.to make their own history and Lalova And Ahye making history

:54:16. > :54:33.already done that. And Ahye making history,

:54:34. > :54:37.the first Trinidad Tobago woman Well, Elaine Thompson withdrew

:54:38. > :54:40.from the Jamaican trials with a hamstring problem

:54:41. > :54:43.and everyone was questioning if she Can she make the double and emulate

:54:44. > :54:51.Shelly Ann Fraser Price, And the world champion,

:54:52. > :55:18.incredible support for Schippers. Ran sub 22 in the semi-final,

:55:19. > :55:25.quicker than she did And then in the final of Beijing

:55:26. > :55:30.she ran an incredible 2163. And the Ivory Coast,

:55:31. > :55:32.Ta Lou, with a personal European champion, 20 years

:55:33. > :55:49.of age, still in great talent, Dina Asher-Smith

:55:50. > :55:51.in the Olympic final. I don't being at the beginning

:55:52. > :56:03.of the season she would have made it through not only the American finals

:56:04. > :56:11.but to get into the Olympic final. We have two of the top five fastest

:56:12. > :56:16.women ever in this race. We have the world champion,

:56:17. > :56:20.Schippers, in this event, and the Olympic champion over 100

:56:21. > :56:23.metres, Thompson, and in between them,

:56:24. > :56:32.Bowie of the United States. Schippers gets out

:56:33. > :56:45.well, so does Bowie. Thompson going well in the yellow

:56:46. > :56:48.of Jamaica, flashing She has to keep her insight

:56:49. > :56:56.because Thompson has the metres, and now Schippers is trying

:56:57. > :56:59.to run her down and she is coming quickly, but the line is coming

:57:00. > :57:03.for Elaine Thompson and she is Schippers falls to the ground

:57:04. > :57:16.in deference to a great champion, a great double champion,

:57:17. > :57:18.Thompson is the new star Schippers did everything

:57:19. > :57:29.that she could. She had too much to make

:57:30. > :57:32.up coming on the bend. It is almost as though

:57:33. > :57:40.she has just realised it. Well, Elaine Thompson comes

:57:41. > :57:49.from a little community called Banana Ground in

:57:50. > :57:51.Manchester, Jamaica. 21.78, that is her winning time,

:57:52. > :57:56.it is not even a personal best. How on earth did she not

:57:57. > :57:59.think she had won that? It is almost as though it has come

:58:00. > :58:03.as a surprise, and now Tori Bowie did take the bronze medal

:58:04. > :58:11.and they were quite a way We expected Schippers to come but it

:58:12. > :58:20.did not quite do what She couldn't finish

:58:21. > :58:24.as well as she did in Beijing. It was exactly what you see

:58:25. > :58:37.at an Olympic final. The fastest women on the planet

:58:38. > :58:40.going head-to-head of half a lap. And look at Elaine Thompson,

:58:41. > :58:42.still on the floor. As you said, I think

:58:43. > :58:54.it was one on this bend. As you said, I think

:58:55. > :58:57.it was won on this bend. In contrast to yesterday,

:58:58. > :58:59.Elaine Thompson blasted around She put herself in a good position

:59:00. > :59:04.to strike well, to get this lovely stride that she has,

:59:05. > :59:07.and look how she is easing herself She knows from last year's

:59:08. > :59:10.experience that if she gets close to her she can outrun her,

:59:11. > :59:14.as she did in Beijing, but this time You can see a Elaine Thompson wants

:59:15. > :59:24.that line to come because she also has a memory from last year

:59:25. > :59:27.and she knows Schippers will be She leans, she takes the title

:59:28. > :59:39.and Schippers, well, that is a familiar finish nowadays,

:59:40. > :59:41.isn't it, someone ending up on the floor,

:59:42. > :59:43.diving for the line. Well, it was a very quick start,

:59:44. > :59:49.certainly by Elaine Thompson, already making up the field,

:59:50. > :59:53.a big gain on Michelle on the outside, and she comes off

:59:54. > :59:56.the bend with a tremendous gap, and never were they going to come

:59:57. > :59:59.back, because she was fresh. We were wondering if she

:00:00. > :00:02.was a little bit tired after that 100 metre race,

:00:03. > :00:05.and she didn't look that great in the semifinals,

:00:06. > :00:08.but this was class here, just perfect execution of this race,

:00:09. > :00:11.similar to what we saw with the world record in the 400

:00:12. > :00:14.metres the other day, just being on the outside,

:00:15. > :00:16.knowing that her condition She never focused at

:00:17. > :00:21.all on the competition, she just ran her race,

:00:22. > :00:24.and you can see her pushing off each step, very,

:00:25. > :00:33.very efficient at the end of that. It was never, ever any competition

:00:34. > :00:42.for Elaine Thompson. So, Deena Asher-Smith scraped

:00:43. > :00:49.and got into this final, looked a little better in this race,

:00:50. > :00:54.she executed on the bend very well, got on the inside of the bend

:00:55. > :00:57.and came off, this is when she came under pressure, but I think

:00:58. > :01:00.that she ran well knowing that she would not be able

:01:01. > :01:03.to compete with the race winners and with the medallists,

:01:04. > :01:07.and she ran her race and stayed very, very relaxed, in contrast

:01:08. > :01:10.to what we saw with Adam Gemili in the semi-final heat

:01:11. > :01:13.where he was very tense and very tight at this point in the race,

:01:14. > :01:19.she was running her own race, running for time, not

:01:20. > :01:23.focused on the winners, focused on her own race and letting

:01:24. > :01:26.the race come to her and letting the finish line come,

:01:27. > :01:29.so I am very impressed with that, it was a good race from her,

:01:30. > :01:32.and that will certainly give her Yes, and for Deena that was the best

:01:33. > :01:46.performance from a British athlete in the Olympics 200 metres final

:01:47. > :01:48.since Kathy Cook in 1994, when she came forth,

:01:49. > :01:50.so well done to her. I wasn't sure that she had thought

:01:51. > :01:55.she had won, I mean, And you know her great-grandmother

:01:56. > :02:05.is 85 and lives in the UK. And if she is watching,

:02:06. > :02:07.if you are staying up late, I am

:02:08. > :02:08.sorry I don't know your name, but I hope

:02:09. > :02:18.you're having a party. Elaine Thompson, 21.78 the winning

:02:19. > :02:23.time, Schippers' 21.88 gets silver, and bronze medal

:02:24. > :02:31.for the USA with Bowie. Dina Asher-Smith, very well done

:02:32. > :02:34.in fifth place, she is with Phil. When you saw the list,

:02:35. > :02:36.Olympic final, 200 I am really happy, especially

:02:37. > :02:44.after the shaky qualification. I was glad I could go out and put

:02:45. > :02:48.a performance which I hope... I think I could have done better

:02:49. > :02:54.but it is closer to where

:02:55. > :02:56.I wanted to be. I was tense at the end

:02:57. > :02:59.and that cost me some places Hopefully I will have more

:03:00. > :03:03.World Championships and hopefully From last time to this, was it a big

:03:04. > :03:10.lesson, or not? We had some injury problems,

:03:11. > :03:14.so that affected my training. So I am just happy to be

:03:15. > :03:22.here. At the age of 20, you have many

:03:23. > :03:28.years ahead of you. Going ahead, what goals

:03:29. > :03:32.have you set yourself, personal targets for next year's

:03:33. > :03:37.London World Championships? They are gonna be absolutely amazing

:03:38. > :03:40.and I know that the team is buzzing after so many positive results,

:03:41. > :03:42.and my personal favourite was Sophie in the hammer,

:03:43. > :03:44.that was incredible, In future I don't know, I want

:03:45. > :03:51.to get higher up the placings. Fifth in the world at 19 and 20,

:03:52. > :04:00.I really can't complain. And just to be an Olympic finalist

:04:01. > :04:03.and to be in the mix was great. And you have the relay action

:04:04. > :04:07.to come up as well, so I wish you Well, we have some great young

:04:08. > :04:17.talent in the British team, Sawyers eight in the long

:04:18. > :04:22.jump, well done to her, and fifth in the 200

:04:23. > :04:23.metres, Dina Asher-Smith. They have been rewarded

:04:24. > :04:32.with some great performances. We are in the last

:04:33. > :04:35.round of the long jump. She has seen her teammate go-ahead

:04:36. > :04:42.in the fifth round. We saw her win the world indoors

:04:43. > :04:56.early this year in the last round and she might have just

:04:57. > :04:59.done it again. Wow, just two centimetres shy

:05:00. > :05:16.of what might have been a victory. Bartoletta, still to respond,

:05:17. > :05:18.whatever this jump will be, but at the moment it is

:05:19. > :05:23.Reese in second place. She jumped a new national record

:05:24. > :05:31.of 7.08 in the fifth round. Last chance to improve her

:05:32. > :05:34.Olympic final bronze. Can she turn it into

:05:35. > :05:38.something better? What an end to this

:05:39. > :05:47.Olympic competition. But 7.08 in the fifth,

:05:48. > :05:55.7.05 in the last round, So, then, Bartoletta,

:05:56. > :06:07.she has won, just having a jump It is another long way

:06:08. > :06:13.out into that sandpit. Celebrations for the world

:06:14. > :06:19.champion from last year. We have seen her offering

:06:20. > :06:29.words of support. Tiffany Porter and her sister,

:06:30. > :06:39.Cindy Ofili, moments away I told you that Tiff

:06:40. > :06:52.is very religious, she has got a lot of faith,

:06:53. > :06:55.faith in her own ability She wants to be the inspiration

:06:56. > :07:03.for her little sister who has done fantastically

:07:04. > :07:05.well to put them both It has brought a tear to your eye

:07:06. > :07:11.and I think all of us here in the studio choked up

:07:12. > :07:15.watching that moment, because, you know, I think family

:07:16. > :07:17.comes here to watch, they share in their children

:07:18. > :07:22.or their partner's experiences, but to have a family member line up

:07:23. > :07:26.with you in a final, there cannot be Yeah, I mean, it is gonna be

:07:27. > :07:32.interesting to see how they actually handle this,

:07:33. > :07:34.and should either one of them actually get a medal, you know,

:07:35. > :07:37.the other one will be so supportive, but it is gonna be tough

:07:38. > :07:40.because it is a really tough field, I mean, it is gonna be

:07:41. > :07:46.real, real tough. Let's just pause now,

:07:47. > :07:48.because the 110 metre hurdle medal He was so excited the other day

:07:49. > :08:49.when he was doing an interview It was good to see him win

:08:50. > :08:57.because it was a difficult race. There were so many people falling

:08:58. > :09:00.down and not getting through but he ran well

:09:01. > :09:02.in the semifinals and was able It is one thing being a favourite

:09:03. > :09:12.coming into the championship We have seen how difficult that has

:09:13. > :09:17.been throughout the competition. That he did enjoy his

:09:18. > :09:19.moment, didn't he? That is one of the best smiles

:09:20. > :09:29.I have seen. And it is rare out not to hear

:09:30. > :09:32.the American anthem ringing Nobody on the rostrum

:09:33. > :09:43.for the United States. Let's hear from the new speed

:09:44. > :09:46.queen, Elaine Thompson. A remarkable performance

:09:47. > :09:48.and a double Olympic champion. Since I was a child,

:09:49. > :09:59.watching Veronica Campbell and other racers, putting my name up

:10:00. > :10:04.there is a great feeling. You train with Shelly Ann Fraser

:10:05. > :10:07.Price and she was cheering for you. What tribute would you pay to her

:10:08. > :10:11.for her inspiration? She is a friend

:10:12. > :10:16.and training partner. She had a difficult season and I am

:10:17. > :10:22.happy for her. A big thank you to her

:10:23. > :10:26.and I love you so much. To defeat Dafne Schippers,

:10:27. > :10:28.that was always going I had a long season to come

:10:29. > :10:43.here and I think I shone tonight. And let me ask you, earlier this

:10:44. > :10:46.year you were injured? A little worried but pain

:10:47. > :10:51.is part of the sport. And here you are, a

:10:52. > :10:58.double gold-medallist. The hurdles out so now

:10:59. > :11:42.we just need some hurdlers. But the top three from

:11:43. > :12:23.the US trials are here. Cindy Ofili, she has never

:12:24. > :12:25.defeated her sister. But I don't think there is any doubt

:12:26. > :12:30.that Cindy Ofili is running a bit But if Tiffany Porter can find

:12:31. > :12:34.something extra then she has a chance but it is difficult to find

:12:35. > :12:37.something extra when all It is difficult but I am hoping that

:12:38. > :12:44.both Cindy and Tiffany can get that out of their mind

:12:45. > :12:49.and concentrate on the barriers because as we see, time after time,

:12:50. > :12:59.the barriers tend to bite back. We have seen a lot of clumsy

:13:00. > :13:01.hurdling happening. Let's hope that Tiffany and Cindy

:13:02. > :13:04.can hold it together. A lot of Dutch fans

:13:05. > :13:10.have left the building This is the last track

:13:11. > :13:15.final of the night and We all thought she was out and then

:13:16. > :13:24.a few things happened. Some athletes came unstuck over

:13:25. > :13:26.the final few hurdles and so she is here racing

:13:27. > :13:29.in the final with her sister. And that is what I

:13:30. > :13:34.need to reiterate. They need to keep calm

:13:35. > :13:37.and run their own race because we can almost guarantee that

:13:38. > :13:43.something will happen. You want to keep yourself

:13:44. > :13:46.in the frame because you never Phylicia George, made the final

:13:47. > :13:52.in London and she is here again. Cindy Ofili, the younger sister

:13:53. > :13:54.of Tiffany Porter who are both Britain. She always wanted to run

:13:55. > :14:03.for Britain, not the United States but then again the US has such

:14:04. > :14:06.strength in hurdling it would be The top fastest seven times this

:14:07. > :14:35.year have been won by Americans. Took out the age-old mark

:14:36. > :14:37.of the Bulgarian, Harrison, Look out for Cindy Roleder,

:14:38. > :14:45.as well because she tends She is being introduced

:14:46. > :14:53.to the crowd and has She gets out quickly -

:14:54. > :15:08.does she have the pace? Pedro Seymour getting

:15:09. > :15:16.quicker and quicker. Kristi Castlin is the third quickest

:15:17. > :15:20.in the world this year. America has three

:15:21. > :15:25.opportunities here. Cindy Ofili, slightly quicker

:15:26. > :15:27.than Tiffany Porter this year. And the Canadian, Phylicia George

:15:28. > :15:36.on the outside. Ten Barriers between one of these

:15:37. > :16:40.women and Olympic gold. Out quickly and cleanly and Rollins

:16:41. > :16:45.is already in the lead. Tiffany Porter is going

:16:46. > :16:47.well and Cindy Ofili Rollins is out in front and surely

:16:48. > :16:52.for the gold medal... I think it is an American

:16:53. > :16:59.one, two, three. Brianna Rollins for the gold

:17:00. > :17:04.and they all celebrate together. It was close for the bronze medal

:17:05. > :17:07.but Brianna Rollins, a former world champion and now

:17:08. > :17:19.the Olympic champion. Cindy Ofili was going very well

:17:20. > :17:22.indeed and we will look to see The reaction in the commentary box

:17:23. > :17:36.was very different to that on the track when that

:17:37. > :17:40.result came through. A fantastic one, two,

:17:41. > :17:42.three by the United States. They are the dominant country

:17:43. > :17:44.for the 100 metre hurdles But Cindy Ofili, she was very

:17:45. > :17:55.competitive and to be the first of the Europeans in this race

:17:56. > :17:59.was quite special indeed. I am hoping that she takes

:18:00. > :18:05.a lot from this race. She should get a little bit

:18:06. > :18:10.of confidence and, like you said, it is the first time she has

:18:11. > :18:12.defeated her elder sister We spoke about how sometimes things

:18:13. > :18:19.can go wrong in the hurdles and sometimes the favourites do not

:18:20. > :18:22.deliver but this went But Brianna Rollins smashed

:18:23. > :18:28.into the Barrier and I thought it But her technique, where her body

:18:29. > :18:35.weight goes forward, She is so good technically that she

:18:36. > :18:48.manages to hold back together. A few hurdles fell down

:18:49. > :18:51.on the track at the end but... Cindy Ofili was there until the end

:18:52. > :18:56.and Castlin was creeping up and got It was going to be a proper

:18:57. > :18:59.battle, wasn't it? It is always a blanket finish

:19:00. > :19:08.in the women's 100 metre hurdles She has been a world

:19:09. > :19:12.champion before. Cindy out of the blocks

:19:13. > :19:22.well and reacts well and knows what the athletes

:19:23. > :19:26.around her are capable of. The important thing for her

:19:27. > :19:31.is to remain cool and not get dragged into the race

:19:32. > :19:35.because sometimes when you get dragged in you end up

:19:36. > :19:38.in the rhythm of somebody else Hurdlers can be rattled

:19:39. > :19:43.left right and centre. But at this time she seems very

:19:44. > :19:44.focused. She is concentrating on trying

:19:45. > :19:49.to relax so there is no tension and she has an opportunity to run

:19:50. > :20:01.off the final Barrier into the line. Look at her, desperately

:20:02. > :20:03.leaning but missing out. They say that fourth is the

:20:04. > :20:05.cruellest position, Cindy can be Something to look back

:20:06. > :20:08.on and be proud of. We heard the commentary team saying

:20:09. > :20:11.that both of you should be proud. What a night for your family,

:20:12. > :20:14.to Olympic champions. So close to a medal,

:20:15. > :20:15.Cindy. I wanted to get a medal

:20:16. > :20:28.for Great Britain. It has been a difficult year for me

:20:29. > :20:43.and I battled to the end. I am proud of myself

:20:44. > :20:49.and very proud of my sister. Trying to explain what it is like to

:20:50. > :20:54.be in rivalry with your sister. I have said from the very beginning

:20:55. > :21:00.that I want to succeed but I want my sister

:21:01. > :21:02.to succeed as well. We are competitors but once we cross

:21:03. > :21:10.the line she is my sister and I am Is it Tiffany and her

:21:11. > :21:19.achievements that inspires you? It has helped me progress

:21:20. > :21:21.as an athlete and she is such And as Andrew said,

:21:22. > :21:30.fourth is the cruellest I can only be happy

:21:31. > :21:41.with this performance. I am happy to have come back

:21:42. > :21:46.and almost achieved a medal. Thank you so much everyone

:21:47. > :21:50.for supporting us. Thank you to the National lottery

:21:51. > :21:53.for the great job you do So confirmation of the results

:21:54. > :22:10.as the stadium empties at the end of this night,

:22:11. > :22:16.Brianna Rollins with a gold medal, Nia Ali with a silver,

:22:17. > :22:20.Kristi Castlin just with that bronze ahead of Cindy Ofili and Tiffany

:22:21. > :22:28.Porter down in seventh place. Well it's been a brilliant

:22:29. > :22:36.night for the Americans Clean sweep in that sprint

:22:37. > :22:39.hurdles, Tianna Bartoletta Here is the standings at the end

:22:40. > :22:49.of what was an amazing competition. Another field event that went

:22:50. > :22:56.down to the last round, Bartoletta a life-time best ahead

:22:57. > :22:58.of Brittney Reese. Ivana Spanovic a national record,

:22:59. > :23:04.there's Jazmin Sawyers. A good performance for her,

:23:05. > :23:06.eighth place. Well, it was a clean sweep,

:23:07. > :23:12.the kind of clean sweep we expected last year in Beijing,

:23:13. > :23:16.they're in such good form, but it You had a beaming

:23:17. > :23:21.smile on your face. The US is so strong in the women's

:23:22. > :23:28.100m hurdles and has And what we have seen with the US

:23:29. > :23:35.team quite a bit starting last year, or even before that,

:23:36. > :23:39.with so many great talents coming to these championships

:23:40. > :23:45.with the fastest time in the world or possible clean sweep,

:23:46. > :23:48.but then falling short. And not because of an injury,

:23:49. > :23:51.just because they So great to see them come through,

:23:52. > :23:59.Kristi Castlin there just barely coming through at the very end

:24:00. > :24:02.because she was in about fourth position, mid-way through that race

:24:03. > :24:04.but still able to get And we had a lovely shot

:24:05. > :24:09.of the sisters hugging. This was the American sisters -

:24:10. > :24:12.the hurdle sisters having Rivals, yes, but clearly

:24:13. > :24:16.great team-mates. They raced against each other,

:24:17. > :24:18.you know, the trials, And I don't know, we're

:24:19. > :24:22.going to check with historians - has this clean sweep ever been done

:24:23. > :24:25.before at the Olympic Might have been done on the track

:24:26. > :24:29.for sprinting, men's sprinting, but I'm not sure it's been done

:24:30. > :24:32.in the women's events. It hasn't been done in the women's

:24:33. > :24:35.hurdles, has been done before in men's 200m,

:24:36. > :24:38.but the women's hurdles, they always had the potential to do

:24:39. > :24:48.it but never done it before now. This world championship,

:24:49. > :24:59.she's have a - someone No, she didn't win

:25:00. > :25:03.last year. But because of the bye situation,

:25:04. > :25:09.they just got so much strength, It's not like this is

:25:10. > :25:15.an extremely I go on a bit about the American,

:25:16. > :25:23.the brutality the American trials. I said they haven't got Harrison

:25:24. > :25:26.here, yes she would have been very much up there,

:25:27. > :25:30.but turns out you didn't need her. This is what people point

:25:31. > :25:35.to with this system - that, hey, these three athletes,

:25:36. > :25:37.and Kristi Castlin really proves it here, that these

:25:38. > :25:38.championship performers, the US Olympic trials

:25:39. > :25:41.is a true championship environment and in many cases,

:25:42. > :25:44.in some events, more difficult Because of the depth

:25:45. > :25:51.and so the athletes who can actually prove it on that day

:25:52. > :25:53.and that's what it really is - it's not so much about

:25:54. > :25:56.the consistency across the season, but it's about, all right,

:25:57. > :25:58.who's got the fastest times, you end up at the trials

:25:59. > :26:03.and who delivers on the day? And so that - there's arguments

:26:04. > :26:10.for both, but I think that what ultimately underlies

:26:11. > :26:12.the decision to put that system is there's no much depth,

:26:13. > :26:14.number one, and two, the politics would be atrocious,

:26:15. > :26:17.would be an absolute nightmare trying to sort that out with so many

:26:18. > :26:19.athletes that could possibly come

:26:20. > :26:21.here and compete. And tonight the 200m was a fantastic

:26:22. > :26:30.race for Jamaica. The new speed queen -

:26:31. > :26:39.Elaine Thompson. Cleanly away and a roar

:26:40. > :26:44.from the crowd, Elaine Thompson, And is trying to get there,

:26:45. > :26:51.but Thompson has gone. 10.72 and a roar from Elaine

:26:52. > :26:55.Thompson. Thompson not going well around

:26:56. > :27:12.the bend in the yellow of Jamaica. And flashes away, Thompson's got

:27:13. > :27:18.the metres, she's got two metres and now Schippers trying

:27:19. > :27:22.to run her down and Schippers is coming quickly, but the line

:27:23. > :27:26.is coming for Elaine Thompson. Thompson is the double

:27:27. > :27:30.gold medallist! Amazingly she didn't realise,

:27:31. > :27:40.she was lying on the ground, only when it flashed up she realised

:27:41. > :27:43.she was the 200m champion. In her interview, she credited

:27:44. > :27:45.the heritage she comes from, Veronica Campbell-Brown,

:27:46. > :27:47.it was a nice moment to remember the lineage she's coming from,

:27:48. > :27:54.she appreciates that. I think so many other athletes have

:27:55. > :27:57.been inspired by the likes of Shelly Anne Fraser Price

:27:58. > :28:04.and Usain Bolt. We talk a lot about Usain Bolt,

:28:05. > :28:07.but Shelly came on the scene at the same time as Usain Bolt,

:28:08. > :28:10.came back and repeated being a championship

:28:11. > :28:12.at the 2012 champion. She is one of the

:28:13. > :28:16.greats of all-time. And I think that unfortunately,

:28:17. > :28:19.she's been overshadowed a little bit by the fact not only because she's

:28:20. > :28:22.in the era of Usain Bolt but they're both Jamaican and the brand has been

:28:23. > :28:26.built on the back of those two really and Usain has been given

:28:27. > :28:29.a lot of credit for that, but that certainly shows that

:28:30. > :28:31.Shelly Anne Fraser Price back in Jamaica has been a huge

:28:32. > :28:39.inspiration for young athlete. And Elaine Thompson if she wants

:28:40. > :28:42.to carry that legacy forward, You have to mention

:28:43. > :28:54.Veronica Campbell-Brown as well. She's been a great inspiration

:28:55. > :28:56.for the Jamaican team But, yeah, it isn't easy

:28:57. > :29:02.to retain your title. We have seen that -

:29:03. > :29:04.these championships. But she's fantastic,

:29:05. > :29:05.amazing athlete. An aggressive racer as well,

:29:06. > :29:17.you know, to take on that, you know, Daphne Schippers and the huge

:29:18. > :29:21.support for her and the build-up and everything else,

:29:22. > :29:23.I have just lost my pen Let's look at the men

:29:24. > :29:28.tonight as well. And, of course, it

:29:29. > :29:35.was Bolt and Gemili. Bolt ran really well

:29:36. > :29:39.around this bend. He seemed a little tired,

:29:40. > :29:42.though, in this race. We noticed beforehand

:29:43. > :29:44.he seemed a little bit tired, didn't have much of a gap coming off

:29:45. > :29:47.of this as he expected. I think he wanted to be able

:29:48. > :29:50.to relax a little bit more here, but Andre De Grasse from Canada

:29:51. > :29:53.on the inside there really pushing I think that Usain Bolt,

:29:54. > :29:59.you know, being playful as he is, Adam Gemili ran really well around

:30:00. > :30:07.the bend and a much better race around the bend than what we saw

:30:08. > :30:10.in the heat, but then here is where he really

:30:11. > :30:12.tightened up and, again, just - let's take Usain Bolt out

:30:13. > :30:15.and contrast Adam Gemili with Kevin Grosskreutz and De Grasse

:30:16. > :30:21.is just very relaxed. Whereas Gemili is very robotic

:30:22. > :30:23.and tight and starting to go While he was disappointed

:30:24. > :30:30.with his performance and champions and based on what he wants,

:30:31. > :30:34.he should be, but at the same time, he should also be looking at this

:30:35. > :30:42.point now, a couple of hours after that race or at least an hour,

:30:43. > :30:45.the fact of 20.0 8. He knows exactly what he did and how

:30:46. > :30:49.he can correct that. That's what he should be thinking

:30:50. > :30:52.about at this point. So these guys just kind of laughing

:30:53. > :30:55.down the home stretch, you know. So you wonder what the other

:30:56. > :30:58.athletes in that heat think when they see these guys

:30:59. > :31:00.are laughing and like a training Webb on the right side

:31:01. > :31:08.of the screen, just struggling trying to get to the finish line,

:31:09. > :31:11.those guys are like - ahhh! And Justin Gatlin has not

:31:12. > :31:14.qualifieded for that 200m final, Huge disappointment

:31:15. > :31:28.and a huge mistake he made. He was in this race,

:31:29. > :31:31.what I believe he did here was expected that,

:31:32. > :31:34."I am the class of the field", it was one of the easier

:31:35. > :31:36.of the heats, he's on the inside of all of my major

:31:37. > :31:39.competition and relax. He's not looking aside,

:31:40. > :31:43.he tries to get back into it and it's too late, you can't

:31:44. > :31:45.do that in a 200m even Usain Bolt can do that,

:31:46. > :31:50.but Justin Gatlin can't do that because he doesn't

:31:51. > :31:54.have that ability. So here he is again -

:31:55. > :31:59.gets the decent kerb but in his wind maind he thought he had

:32:00. > :32:02.a better kerb. The issue there with Blake

:32:03. > :32:09.was that he didn't really execute that curve at all and it could be

:32:10. > :32:14.because of the long collegiate season, but what happened now

:32:15. > :32:19.is he was never in that and he was too relaxed on the bend

:32:20. > :32:23.and too tight from the beginning. Gatlin right there looking over

:32:24. > :32:27.after he's realised already that he's relaxed too much and started

:32:28. > :32:30.to slow down and he's nowhere near the finish line

:32:31. > :32:31.and now realising I got work to do and get

:32:32. > :32:44.back up to speed, it doesn't work. Well, there would be some people

:32:45. > :32:48.of course who would be quite happy Gatlin isn't through to that final,

:32:49. > :32:51.and maybe we won't see him in big Obviously we'll see him

:32:52. > :32:56.by the 4 by 100m relay. Given what he's received from this

:32:57. > :32:59.field, they'll be happy to see he's not here,

:33:00. > :33:02.they have booed him every time he's come out on the track,

:33:03. > :33:05.certainly we know a lot of people believe that the IAAF should

:33:06. > :33:08.have a rule that shouldn't allow him to be here and they take it

:33:09. > :33:10.out on him. Will we see him at

:33:11. > :33:18.another championship? I would imagine we will probably

:33:19. > :33:21.see him here next year, certainly if Usain Bolt decides

:33:22. > :33:22.he's not coming... If Usain Bolt decides he's not

:33:23. > :33:33.coming to the championships, Even if Bolt is coming,

:33:34. > :33:38.Gatlin still is probably going to be like -

:33:39. > :33:40.I ran personal best last year. Is there anyone in the US

:33:41. > :33:43.who will chase him. He was the bronze medallist

:33:44. > :33:49.with De Grasse the other day. The problem we have in the US

:33:50. > :33:54.with the 100m is that we got all this fantastic talent early

:33:55. > :33:56.on but they're not making the transition from the college

:33:57. > :33:59.level to the professional level. They're not making that transition

:34:00. > :34:01.in the most effective way. If you're dominating the hurdles,

:34:02. > :34:03.you're also dominating long jump and tonight was Tianna Bartoletta

:34:04. > :34:06.who put in the biggest jump of the night to claim

:34:07. > :34:08.the Olympic title. And had a great tussle

:34:09. > :34:10.with Brittney Reese, didn't Similar to what we Shaw in the men's

:34:11. > :34:18.competition last night. Great to see the lead change back

:34:19. > :34:21.and forth quite a bit, two Americans here that are both

:34:22. > :34:25.very, very good. Bartoletta 100m athlete was that

:34:26. > :34:28.that time but I think this year she really did focus on and point

:34:29. > :34:32.to this long jump knowing she may Brittney Reese, the defending

:34:33. > :34:35.Olympic champion who has been extremely dominant,

:34:36. > :34:38.just didn't have enough. But that was a great competition

:34:39. > :34:41.to see just the lead change back I think what she's done successfully

:34:42. > :34:46.this season is dovetail that 100m and the long jump throughout

:34:47. > :34:49.the diamond league. The consistency you get from jumping

:34:50. > :34:55.regularly and managing that speed that she has,

:34:56. > :34:58.I mean, she's 10.9 athlete, And to manage that on the runway

:34:59. > :35:03.is really difficult. We spoke last year after that last

:35:04. > :35:12.round jump to win the world title, It's a matter of just being mentally

:35:13. > :35:22.tough and with the long jump I had to shift gears and not focus

:35:23. > :35:24.on winning but putting I was able to do that a few times

:35:25. > :35:30.today so I'm pleased How were you able to block out

:35:31. > :35:34.the Olympic final, you're going to be in contention

:35:35. > :35:37.for a medal but to go My approach is 39m long and I have

:35:38. > :35:46.to nail ever step of that My approach is 39m long and I have

:35:47. > :35:49.to nail every step of that When you have secured the victory

:35:50. > :35:54.and realised you're Olympic I had to take a deep breath

:35:55. > :35:59.because I had one more jump and I have seen people kind of fall

:36:00. > :36:02.apart because they get too emotional So I really tried to put together

:36:03. > :36:07.good last jump as well, I did. Enjoy the celebrations

:36:08. > :36:09.and the moment, well done. Well, Jazmin Sawyers

:36:10. > :36:13.managed her best jump, was 6.69. And ended up finishing

:36:14. > :36:18.in eighth position. Well, your first Olympic

:36:19. > :36:26.final and you have - well, delivered an assured

:36:27. > :36:30.performance for such a big stage I can't believe I'm going to say it,

:36:31. > :36:37.but I'm disappointed. Two goals coming here -

:36:38. > :36:45.make the final and jufr PB. Two goals coming here -

:36:46. > :36:53.make the final and jump a PB. I thought I could -

:36:54. > :36:56.I could jump my PB on the time, I usually thrive in these

:36:57. > :36:58.environments, I didn't - 69 is a solid performance,

:36:59. > :37:02.but it's not... I think I'm better than

:37:03. > :37:07.6.69, and I'm kind of - I know I'll look back on this

:37:08. > :37:13.in a few days and think you did amazing and made the top eight,

:37:14. > :37:16.when I say those words come out Every time I achieve one goal

:37:17. > :37:21.when you make the final, Dream a bit further,

:37:22. > :37:31.climb up the ranks a bit to see But I'm proud of myself,

:37:32. > :37:36.it's been incredible here tonight and I'm so grateful

:37:37. > :37:38.for the opportunity. It's an attitude a lot of you share,

:37:39. > :37:43.one of those new breed of Being happy and smily and enjoying

:37:44. > :37:49.the environment is part of producing something great, usually for me,

:37:50. > :37:54.and you know, definitely helped me to get into that top eight

:37:55. > :37:58.but I couldn't do anymore. I need to sit down with my coach,

:37:59. > :38:02.Allen and go, "What more did I need There was no obvious

:38:03. > :38:07.this was horrible. It wasn't awful, it was a whole

:38:08. > :38:15.sight better than yesterday, I feel like this is not

:38:16. > :38:26.the end for me, I don't want to finish my career

:38:27. > :38:29.as the eighth best in the Olympics. Obviously no improvement

:38:30. > :38:37.for Great Britain. They have upped their

:38:38. > :38:44.total tally to 19. Elaine Thompson adding

:38:45. > :38:49.to that tonight. Another fantastically

:38:50. > :39:02.action-packed evening. Hot, very hottest that

:39:03. > :39:06.we have had so far. It's been pretty warm but that long

:39:07. > :39:09.jump was really cool to see and certainly the 100m hurdles,

:39:10. > :39:12.very proud of those girls. Just great to see that people

:39:13. > :39:17.are raising their game, that long Two or three women over

:39:18. > :39:21.seven metres, quality. Excellent and of course going to be

:39:22. > :39:24.hot in here tomorrow night as well Usain Bolt will be back

:39:25. > :39:29.in here and these sprinters seem And Doyle going into

:39:30. > :39:35.the 400m murderles finals. You're practically staying up

:39:36. > :39:40.all night, we'll see We got a little bit time

:39:41. > :40:29.of Taekwondo for you, Attacks to the body can be made

:40:30. > :40:33.using a fist or a foot, but an athlete can only use their feet to

:40:34. > :40:41.strike the area above the collar bone. Punches to the head and a tax

:40:42. > :40:48.to the spine are not permitted. Punches where the athletes using the

:40:49. > :40:54.knuckle part of a tightly clenched fist scores differently depending

:40:55. > :40:59.how an athlete has attacked. If the attack is a turning reverse kick to

:41:00. > :41:04.the body, it is worth three points. An athlete will receive three points

:41:05. > :41:08.for illegal kick to a head and if it is a turning cake, it receives the

:41:09. > :41:15.maximum four points. The competitor with the most points wins the match,

:41:16. > :41:33.but in the event of a tie, the first contestant to register a point wins.

:41:34. > :41:38.Now is time for the action, it's the 49 kilo gold

:41:39. > :41:44.We're going to join in in the third round.

:41:45. > :41:58.Third round, 5-2 in favour of South Korea.

:41:59. > :42:05.Takes a little simple shot to the body.

:42:06. > :42:14.There's a piece there for holding on the inside.

:42:15. > :42:36.Almost let the celebration go too soon but the Serb still in this one.

:42:37. > :42:41.Can she find the space for these long legs.

:42:42. > :42:53.Absolutely perfect exkug, fires across.

:42:54. > :42:56.Absolutely perfect execution, fires across.

:42:57. > :42:59.Flexed off the top of the shoulder and the Serb takes the fall.

:43:00. > :43:02.It did not however land and it's now 6-4.

:43:03. > :43:17.Great flexibility, able to get the legs so high.

:43:18. > :43:26.Working hard maintaining good footwork all the way through.

:43:27. > :43:30.Kim having to dart around the edge, going to give away another one.

:43:31. > :43:34.Won't prove too pivotal at the moment, but that pending

:43:35. > :43:48.She's moving and constantly pushing Kim backwards.

:43:49. > :43:53.She knows she's got to chase this with only 20 seconds on the clock.

:43:54. > :43:56.20 seconds from the Olympic gold medal from Kim So-hui.

:43:57. > :44:06.Takes another body shot underneath, Bogdanovic needs a head kick many

:44:07. > :44:08.Takes another body shot underneath, Bogdanovic needs a head kick in

:44:09. > :44:15.The first gold medal at stake here for Olympic Taekwondo.

:44:16. > :44:23.The Serb doesn't want to settle for silver.

:44:24. > :44:32.Can the Serb Bogdanovic find a shot at glory here?

:44:33. > :44:34.Moving forward So-hui on the back foot.

:44:35. > :44:37.The referee giving another one for avoidance there.

:44:38. > :44:53.She's got it and going to be seven points each!

:44:54. > :44:56.The referee just checking there that the buzzer hasn't gone.

:44:57. > :44:58.In fact, the buzzer looks to have gone.

:44:59. > :45:13.The Kiongo can be given after the buzzer if you fell over.

:45:14. > :45:15.The coach here from Serbia is looking for one.

:45:16. > :45:18.If that Kiongo is given, it will be a sudden death gold medal

:45:19. > :45:37.That will mean 7 points each which will mean sudden death.

:45:38. > :45:55.Talk about history, talk about pressure.

:45:56. > :46:08.They want another angle for a big push from the leg.

:46:09. > :46:17.There's the push, there's a great angle, it's a push-kick,

:46:18. > :46:32.It could be to do with the timing of it.

:46:33. > :46:35.Kim So-hui takes a glorious gold medal for Korea.

:46:36. > :46:39.Bogdanovic could not have come any closer.

:46:40. > :46:41.A wonderful winning smile from the Serb.

:46:42. > :46:56.Nice show of respect between the teams and Kim So-hui,

:46:57. > :46:58.she was limping, she was battered and bruised, but in the end

:46:59. > :47:00.there is the Olympic champion from South Korea -

:47:01. > :47:03.Kim So-hui takes it in the very last second.

:47:04. > :47:20.Let's now turn our attention to the men's composition

:47:21. > :47:24.The gold medal match between China taking on Thailand's competitor.

:47:25. > :47:36.Almost stealing a little shot and under the guard there.

:47:37. > :47:40.Three points down coming in this first round.

:47:41. > :47:54.And into the second round, that 3 point gap is still there.

:47:55. > :47:58.Front leg again from Shuai Zhao trying to

:47:59. > :48:08.10 seconds left in this second round here.

:48:09. > :48:13.Thailand's competitor is trying to come back into it.

:48:14. > :48:49.Well, is Zhao's reach just too good at the moment.

:48:50. > :48:56.When you have long legs, it is so hard to get those double kicks in.

:48:57. > :48:58.You have to cram your hips in and touch your knees

:48:59. > :49:31.The Olympic final in the men's under 58kg contest.

:49:32. > :49:36.Zhao Shuai of China against Tawin Hanprab of Thailand.

:49:37. > :49:38.And it is Zhao Shuai who tries to score with a double.

:49:39. > :49:42.He has the tactic right and the technique right.

:49:43. > :49:49.Over the shoulder, the top and he gets it.

:49:50. > :50:01.He closes the door and a sandwich kick.

:50:02. > :50:05.It is 5-4 in just a matter of seconds.

:50:06. > :50:11.Blink and you miss it, it really is that fast.

:50:12. > :50:13.Sometimes Olympic tae kwon do contests are a bit cagey,

:50:14. > :50:15.it takes a while to get going but when it

:50:16. > :50:24.1.5 minutes remaining in this gold-medal match.

:50:25. > :50:43.Two points separating the two fighters.

:50:44. > :50:51.He always takes one on the way through.

:50:52. > :50:54.Zhao Shuai of China tries with a kick over the shoulder.

:50:55. > :51:06.Tawin Hanprab does well to avoid as he pushes

:51:07. > :51:21.He is not making the final minutes count.

:51:22. > :51:25.The other thing coming in is a bit of fatigue.

:51:26. > :51:29.Look into that one-off salvation which could pull

:51:30. > :51:33.Zhao Shuai trying to defend for his life.

:51:34. > :51:47.Can Tawin Hanprab produce something special?

:51:48. > :52:04.Changing direction but not changing direction of the match here.

:52:05. > :52:27.Zhao Shuai checks the scoreboard, he looks for the time,

:52:28. > :52:35.The fighter from Thailand is running out of steam but running

:52:36. > :52:38.into Zhao as he comes away with a glorious gold medal.

:52:39. > :52:40.Olympic champion, Zhao Shuai of China.

:52:41. > :52:46.A superb silver for the man from Thailand.

:52:47. > :52:55.But Zhao Shuai, he didn't have it all his own way.

:52:56. > :53:16.So many thousands of hours of training and sacrifice.

:53:17. > :53:19.The final gold medal here on the opening day

:53:20. > :53:25.Zhao Shuai of China takes a glorious gold.

:53:26. > :53:33.Remember, Jade Jones gets her Olympic campaign under way tomorrow.

:53:34. > :53:36.We all remember how great it was when she won her gold

:53:37. > :53:42.Look behind me, at the end of Copacabana, what a wonderful

:53:43. > :53:49.A little bit of razzmatazz going on because we have got

:53:50. > :53:54.A mouthwatering matchup in the women's beach volleyball.

:53:55. > :54:04.First, we head back to the Carioca Arena 2.

:54:05. > :54:16.The 48, 58, and 69- kilogram category.

:54:17. > :54:20.In the 58 category, Ichiko was hoping to be

:54:21. > :54:42.the first woman to win four consecutive gold medals.

:54:43. > :54:48.It is the gold medal match up between...

:54:49. > :54:50.Stadnik, of Azerbaijan, against Tosaka.

:54:51. > :54:53.If she can complete the three medals, Stadnik, it would be a very

:54:54. > :55:28.This is going to be a terrific matchup.

:55:29. > :55:32.Period number 2 here in the gold-medal match.

:55:33. > :55:36.The last three minutes of this encounter between Tosaka of Japan

:55:37. > :55:59.Here is the official warning this time.

:56:00. > :56:03.The Japanese wrestler is on the clock.

:56:04. > :56:11.30 seconds, she's got to score a point otherwise Mariya Stadnik

:56:12. > :56:23.But with what is at stake here, it is a big deficit.

:56:24. > :56:35.There is going to be absolutely nothing coming out of that one,

:56:36. > :56:43.The Japanese wrestler, unable to score in the 30 seconds.

:56:44. > :56:52.She wants to win, she is going to have to throw caution to the wind

:56:53. > :57:00.at some point in these last two minutes.

:57:01. > :57:03.You can see the Japanese wrestler now becoming more active

:57:04. > :57:06.and Stadnik, she is expecting exactly that.

:57:07. > :57:08.She has got some pretty decent defensive skills behind her.

:57:09. > :57:16.She was in danger of going out of bounds there.

:57:17. > :57:26.Not even a glimpse of an attacking opportunity.

:57:27. > :57:29.There is going to be something now because Stadnik has got

:57:30. > :57:40.This could be really huge for the Japanese wrestler.

:57:41. > :57:45.It is Tosaka here with just over one minute to go.

:57:46. > :57:55.Stadnik, desperately trying to win another point.

:57:56. > :58:10.We are going to go to two points to one.

:58:11. > :58:12.Remember, the last time these two met, just under one year

:58:13. > :58:17.40 seconds remaining, gold-medal on the line here.

:58:18. > :58:22.And Tosaka, she wants to win Olympic gold.

:58:23. > :58:25.She has got to find a way through the outstanding defensive

:58:26. > :58:40.But they got to work for 20 more seconds.

:58:41. > :59:03.She has got the Japanese wrestler exactly where she wants.

:59:04. > :59:05.It is a two-pointer for the Japanese wrestler.

:59:06. > :59:07.And it is come with three seconds on the clock.

:59:08. > :59:13.Eri Tosaka, Olympic gold medals don't get much

:59:14. > :59:44.Eri Tosaka, a world champion three times becomes an Olympic champion.

:59:45. > :59:51.And Japan continued their dominance and win their eighth gold medal.

:59:52. > :00:16.It is potentially an enormous moment, in not just the history

:00:17. > :00:25.of wrestling but in the history of the Olympic Games.

:00:26. > :00:51.And, in doing so, would be the first woman in Olympic history to win

:00:52. > :01:01.individual event golds in four consecutive Olympics in any sport.

:01:02. > :01:14.Is she going to be able to see this one across the line?

:01:15. > :01:35.Can Icho win this bout and win the fourth gold medal?

:01:36. > :01:44.In doing so, become the first woman in Olympic history to win

:01:45. > :01:46.individual event golds in four classes in any sport.

:01:47. > :01:49.This could be a huge moment here she is trying to secure position.

:01:50. > :01:55.She has got the Russian just where she needs to.

:01:56. > :01:58.Can she get the strength and the technique to haul her over?

:01:59. > :02:29.On the last 90 seconds of the contest, two points

:02:30. > :02:53.is probably the most common point you will see in freestyle wrestling.

:02:54. > :03:06.There has been a penalty point awarded there.

:03:07. > :03:32.We have seen a lot of bouts in the women's wrestling decided

:03:33. > :03:47.The lead is the 23-year-old, the wrestler in blue,

:03:48. > :03:49.closing in on the Olympic gold medal at the moment.

:03:50. > :04:07.Icho trying to turn it around, trying to convert

:04:08. > :04:16.Icho tries to turn around here, trying to get a score out of this.

:04:17. > :04:24.It looks as though she has secured it right before the very end.

:04:25. > :04:41.Keeping us guessing until the very end of the contest.

:04:42. > :04:45.Here at the Rio 2016 Games, history made.

:04:46. > :04:51.She is pretty good at making history.

:04:52. > :05:01.Kaori Icho has won her fourth consecutive gold medal in wrestling,

:05:02. > :05:07.and in doing so she becomes the first woman in Olympic history

:05:08. > :05:15.to win individual event gold in four consecutive Olympic Games.

:05:16. > :05:18.Well, not much emotion here for Kaori Icho,

:05:19. > :05:26.but surely it is about to start pouring out of her right now.

:05:27. > :05:38.We move to the gold medal bouts now in the women's freestyle wrestling,

:05:39. > :05:46.It will feature Russia's Natalia Vorobeva, the world number four.

:05:47. > :05:54.Up against Sara Dosho of Japan, the world number five.

:05:55. > :05:59.Sara Dosho here has the possibility of winning Japan's third Olympic

:06:00. > :06:28.Yet again, Natalia Vorobieva driving her out.

:06:29. > :06:48.Just stalling here, just trying to make it very difficult.

:06:49. > :06:50.It looks as though this will be a second point for

:06:51. > :07:04.At the moment it is 2-0 with one minute and 30 seconds left.

:07:05. > :07:07.The referee has been very clear here.

:07:08. > :07:45.Vorobieva being urged to do some attacking here.

:07:46. > :07:47.Seemingly happy here to preserve her slender two-point lead.

:07:48. > :07:50.Dosho could seal this with a score here.

:07:51. > :07:58.Her opponent needs a 2-point takedown.

:07:59. > :08:08.It is a 2-pointer, to the Japanese wrestler!

:08:09. > :08:18.She will have 20 seconds of all-out attack here

:08:19. > :08:23.At the moment, on count back it will be Dosho

:08:24. > :08:33.That is unless the Russian can score here.

:08:34. > :08:36.The referee is warning some pretty animated coaches from both

:08:37. > :08:43.20 seconds to go, Vorobieva needs to dig deep if she wants

:08:44. > :08:51.She has got ten seconds to get a score.

:08:52. > :08:53.Otherwise for the Japanese wrestler, it will be three golds

:08:54. > :08:56.in this session to Japan, and Vorobieva is going down

:08:57. > :09:13.What a session for Japanese wrestling.

:09:14. > :09:15.Their domination of the women's wrestling is renowned,

:09:16. > :09:30.Vorobieva could not defend her Olympic title,

:09:31. > :09:34.and Dosho with that 2-pointer with about 25 seconds left gets

:09:35. > :09:52.It finishes 2-2, but the gold goes to Sara Dosho of Japan.

:09:53. > :09:58.The women's 69kg gold medal, and it was a thriller.

:09:59. > :10:03.The reaction here from the Japanese fans, it is not the first time

:10:04. > :10:06.he has been in that position, hoisted up again,

:10:07. > :10:27.What a session for this Japanese team.

:10:28. > :10:35.Well, we have to look at these celebrations again.

:10:36. > :10:44.When Japan wins a gold medal, they celebrate in style.

:10:45. > :10:46.There you go, no hands needed at all.

:10:47. > :10:48.Only when she is clutching onto his thighs.

:10:49. > :10:51.I think that should become a celebration in Premier League

:10:52. > :11:33.This is a massive game, Brazil against Argentina.

:11:34. > :12:03.Both these teams battled fiercely through the semi-final matches,

:12:04. > :12:06.beating some of the most incredible teams in the world.

:12:07. > :12:11.The Brazilians, Agatha and Barbara, were unstoppable.

:12:12. > :12:21.They were so clean and so precise with everything that they did

:12:22. > :12:30.and that is why both these teams are here tonight.

:12:31. > :12:40.The key here for the German pair is to get into this game quickly.

:12:41. > :12:48.Every Brazilian point is going to be cheered to the rafters.

:12:49. > :12:54.Agatha and Barbara have definitely got the energy of the crowd.

:12:55. > :13:03.It doesn't seem to bother the Germans too much.

:13:04. > :13:24.It seems like there was a lot of wind picking up.

:13:25. > :13:26.You can tell by Laura's hair, it is blowing.

:13:27. > :13:31.Brazil is on, what we would say, is the good side.

:13:32. > :13:33.It makes the ball more unpredictable.

:13:34. > :13:37.It allows the Brazilians to stay pretty aggressive.

:13:38. > :13:43.Walkenhorst repays the block off Agatha.

:13:44. > :13:47.If you are watching beach volleyball for the first time,

:13:48. > :14:05.Best of three sets, the first two sets are played up to 21.

:14:06. > :14:33.There are also two challenges per team, per set.

:14:34. > :14:36.If you get your challenge right, you keep it.

:14:37. > :14:44.That net can start to blow and cause it to go into the block.

:14:45. > :14:48.Something that all these players are taking into account,

:14:49. > :14:53.but we are also looking at a stadium that seats 12,000.

:14:54. > :14:57.Not only is it one side might be more favourable,

:14:58. > :15:12.but that wind can bounce around and creates a serious swirling action.

:15:13. > :15:16.This wind has picked up since the bronze medal match

:15:17. > :15:32.which finished probably one hour and 20 minutes ago.

:15:33. > :16:03.Really great work on both sides of the net.

:16:04. > :16:13.That first set by Ludwig was aggressive but she has to get it

:16:14. > :16:23.Knowing how physical Walkenhorst is, she likes her chances,

:16:24. > :16:30.getting up there and tangling with Agatha in the block.

:16:31. > :16:41.She is very happy to put the ball over the net the first

:16:42. > :16:54.She is known for that, those type of plays.

:16:55. > :16:56.It is most definitely in the Brazilians' scouting report.

:16:57. > :16:58.Watch her to go on one, watch her to go on two.

:16:59. > :17:02.They are very precise in the way they score.

:17:03. > :17:51.She created a bit of a hybrid with that serve.

:17:52. > :18:27.She gets there, she just can't keep it up.

:18:28. > :18:34.In the end, the retreating Walkenhorst can't do anything

:18:35. > :19:22.Agatha hammering but Walkenhorst is about 1.5, two metres away.

:19:23. > :19:39.Her paticence and position is what sets her apart.

:19:40. > :20:11.Barbara, very much poking, chipping type of player.

:20:12. > :20:21.She wants to place it before she takes a swing at it.

:20:22. > :20:35.Walkenhorst, to the empty back court.

:20:36. > :20:38.This team has not seemed rattled once.

:20:39. > :20:42.This entire tournament, this entire Olympics,

:20:43. > :20:44.the Germans have been steady and focused, point by point,

:20:45. > :20:53.And that type of focus on that type of calm,

:20:54. > :20:56.that can only come from trusting each other and trusting the work

:20:57. > :20:59.that you have put in, trusting the team that is behind

:21:00. > :21:04.the team that beat the team in the stands, the sports

:21:05. > :21:11.psychologists, the strength coaches, the coaches, the video analysts.

:21:12. > :21:16.There is a lot of trust in that camp and it is paying off for them.

:21:17. > :21:20.So the first technical timeout is Germany who lead

:21:21. > :22:28.This gold-medal match just couldn't be any closer.

:22:29. > :22:30.Walkenhorst has one of the heaviest arms in the game.

:22:31. > :22:37.There are only so many bullets in that gun but she has a few more

:22:38. > :22:41.Brazil just trying to put a sting in the game.

:22:42. > :22:44.This is the sixth time these players have met since June last year.

:22:45. > :22:47.We can see the draw and how they got to this gold-medal match.

:22:48. > :22:50.Agatha and Barbara won the first one in June last year.

:22:51. > :23:24.They won in the Yokohama match and in the gold-medal match in Hamburg.

:23:25. > :23:40.It is very difficult to deal with the southpaw,

:23:41. > :23:44.But Walkenhorst did an incredible job.

:23:45. > :23:48.That is such a great and gutsy adjustment by the Germans,

:23:49. > :23:52.knowing that Bednarczuk likes to get chippy,

:23:53. > :23:55.that is not a mistake that she makes.

:23:56. > :24:24.It is the wind that made Ludwig play out.

:24:25. > :24:27.It is the wind that made Ludwig play that.

:24:28. > :24:46.Great mental agility by Ludwig to come back and take

:24:47. > :25:22.Brazil need to start winning points on their serve here.

:25:23. > :25:47.They both played aggressively and they both celebrated

:25:48. > :26:07.Ludwig was definitely the aggressor on that.

:26:08. > :26:09.Germany still being very aggressive with their setting.

:26:10. > :26:40.That gets them to within two points of this first set.

:26:41. > :26:45.The crowd know the importance of these next few points.

:26:46. > :26:56.That is how they started their semi-final match

:26:57. > :26:58.against Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross.

:26:59. > :27:01.Really good control on the receive, running back plays behind the centre

:27:02. > :27:04.and spreading the defence as far as they can.

:27:05. > :27:10.It makes the defence extremely uncomfortable.

:27:11. > :27:16.Walkenhorst pounces to bring up three set points.

:27:17. > :27:20.Stays in the play, stays the aggressor.

:27:21. > :27:23.It is a much different feeling when a team takes the court

:27:24. > :27:37.and is looking to score and they are the aggressors.

:27:38. > :27:39.The next sest point comes on the Brazilians' serve.

:27:40. > :27:56.The next two, if they require, will both be on the Brazilian serve.

:27:57. > :28:04.They take the first set at the second time of asking.

:28:05. > :28:06.Germany are in front in this gold medal match.

:28:07. > :28:08.The pocket of German supporters rise as one to cheer.

:28:09. > :28:11.Listen to how quiet the stadium is now.

:28:12. > :28:13.We mentioned before that what the German pair need to do

:28:14. > :28:17.to get into the match and quieten the crowd, well, they have done

:28:18. > :28:19.that in the first set, because they won it

:28:20. > :28:24.So it is Germany who take the lead in the beach volleyball.

:28:25. > :28:26.Let's just show you what has been happening in the indoor volleyball.

:28:27. > :28:34.Brazil needing just one more point to win it.

:28:35. > :29:03.Let's go back to the beach volleyball at the iconic Copacabana

:29:04. > :29:14.beach. She really stays behind

:29:15. > :29:17.the ball well. Her shoulders

:29:18. > :29:29.are textbook. A step in, a bit of a delay

:29:30. > :29:43.on the ground, knowing The finish, it is one thing to touch

:29:44. > :29:54.it, but it is something else Brazil are on the board

:29:55. > :30:07.in the second set. Trying to take some sort

:30:08. > :30:13.of momentum, trying to figure out how they are going to get these

:30:14. > :30:16.points against a very, Again, Walkenhorst, not only does

:30:17. > :30:41.she have such a heavy arm, but she can get that handset,

:30:42. > :30:45.which is an extremely difficult Those are the details that separate

:30:46. > :31:01.a gold medal team from the rest Again, she seems to

:31:02. > :31:15.hang there for ages. Early advantage to Germany,

:31:16. > :31:18.but plenty of time for Brazil This is almost a repetition

:31:19. > :31:38.of the semi-final, except in the semi-final,

:31:39. > :31:40.they were down three quarters This time they led for most

:31:41. > :31:45.of the first set, and Brazil have They are hoping this works

:31:46. > :31:52.because they will have nothing left Germany is still staying

:31:53. > :33:02.aggressive with their setting, waiting for the

:33:03. > :33:04.opportunity to score. In 2013, she was both the most

:33:05. > :33:10.improved and top ranking. She has been digging well, Barbara,

:33:11. > :33:52.but no reply to that. Germany are really

:33:53. > :34:01.in the box seat here. Walkenhorst has just been blocking

:34:02. > :34:51.the run here. The German women are bringing such

:34:52. > :34:54.good energy and its authentic. Every point here, Agatha and

:34:55. > :35:45.Barbara. We talk about timing

:35:46. > :35:49.and spacing and how imperative it is but the angles of this game

:35:50. > :35:55.are ever shifting. Then you throw the element

:35:56. > :35:57.of the wind in. It can change the ball

:35:58. > :36:00.so drastically in flight. Fascinating and brilliant that

:36:01. > :36:05.Barbara is in the right position Good communication

:36:06. > :36:45.by the Brazilians. Barbara talked to Agatha

:36:46. > :36:49.to go over the block, and it didn't need to be sharp,

:36:50. > :36:52.it just needed to be The deficit that came

:36:53. > :38:10.in the first seven points. You can kind of see a lower

:38:11. > :38:17.mouthpiece on Agatha and Barbara. There have been many studies

:38:18. > :38:29.in sports science and psychology, clenching the teeth

:38:30. > :38:30.actually releases the drug These athletes are so dialled

:38:31. > :38:41.in to what their numbers are, whether they need to get

:38:42. > :38:43.more excited or whether Overexcitement causes issues,

:38:44. > :38:49.being too relaxed causes issues. Psychologically, knowing

:38:50. > :38:53.where you are, some Brazil won seven of the last ten

:38:54. > :39:22.points. They could get their nose in front

:39:23. > :39:29.before the end of the set. They have been working on executing

:39:30. > :39:49.it extremely well. They are having to completely

:39:50. > :39:53.abandon that and go to a lower set The wind just killed

:39:54. > :39:58.that serve as well. Just as I talked about Brazil

:39:59. > :40:03.getting back into it, look at that. They've got to keep believing,

:40:04. > :40:11.Brazil, because just ran out into that early lead,

:40:12. > :40:15.Brazil might have a This is getting very

:40:16. > :40:38.ominous for Brazil. It is so important to stay low,

:40:39. > :40:45.get that set up. They kept it alive that they

:40:46. > :40:59.couldn't get it back over the net. It is seven gold-medal

:41:00. > :41:02.points for Germany. I said I didn't think they would win

:41:03. > :41:06.the second set 21-12. This is it, the first

:41:07. > :41:16.of seven gold-medal points. They will have to wait

:41:17. > :41:35.a little longer. The second match point

:41:36. > :41:48.comes on Brazil's serve. They have taken the gold-medal match

:41:49. > :41:59.by two sets to nil. They are the Olympic

:42:00. > :42:06.champions in Rio. The European champions have beaten

:42:07. > :42:23.the world champions and as always, in situations like this,

:42:24. > :42:27.there are two sides of the coin. The joy of the winners

:42:28. > :42:36.and the despair of the losers. They desperately wanted the gold

:42:37. > :42:42.medal on the beach volleyball Ludwig and Walkenhorst stunned

:42:43. > :42:54.the gold-medal favourites to make the final and by winning that match,

:42:55. > :42:58.they made sure that Germany would win their first ever Olympic

:42:59. > :43:03.medal on the beach volleyball. The German men won the gold medal

:43:04. > :43:06.in London and look at that, When your luck is not in,

:43:07. > :43:15.it is simply not in. The German flag is waved proudly

:43:16. > :43:23.on the Copacabana beach. A lot of people had Brazil

:43:24. > :43:31.down to be favourites, simply because it is a home game

:43:32. > :43:34.and they were absolutely wonderful yesterday in despatching

:43:35. > :44:12.the Americans but it is Germany's Great Britain's women's hockey team

:44:13. > :44:13.played the Netherlands on Friday. Goodbye for now.
