:00:00. > :00:13.A lot of support for Thomas Barr of Waterford. Ireland have history in

:00:14. > :00:18.this event. Going way back, 1932, an awful long time ago. That has been

:00:19. > :00:21.all over the Irish newspapers and websites as they cross their fingers

:00:22. > :00:28.and hope. Goodness me, what a hope it would be if Thomas Barr could

:00:29. > :00:33.carry on what has been an amazing journey so far. A new Irish record

:00:34. > :00:44.just to get to the final but he is up against famous faces and names.

:00:45. > :00:53.Clement perhaps the most famous. Two Kenyan is on the outside. Anybody

:00:54. > :00:59.could win this. Clement is the favourite but and it is a big butt.

:01:00. > :01:06.This is the 400 hurdles and anything can happen. On the outside, the

:01:07. > :01:11.brother of Nicklas who won the World Championships last year. He is not

:01:12. > :01:15.fit this year. I think he hit a hurdle in qualifying. So it could

:01:16. > :01:33.have been three canyons in the final, but only two. The Jamaican

:01:34. > :01:42.champion Whyte having a good season. -- two Kenyans. Clement, we remember

:01:43. > :01:47.when he burst onto the scene. Brilliant flat speed. Announced

:01:48. > :01:54.himself to the world and moved on up to the hurdles. He is back in top

:01:55. > :02:06.form. Thomas Barr, from ferry bank athletics club. If you support for

:02:07. > :02:19.him here. Culson, Porto Rico -- Puerto Rico have never won a medal

:02:20. > :02:33.in this. And the former Cuba now running for Turkey, Copello. The

:02:34. > :02:44.last Irish medal, Sonia O'Sullivan in 2000 in the 5000 metres won a

:02:45. > :02:49.silver medal. Robert Heffernan is still waiting to find out if he will

:02:50. > :02:59.get a medal from 2012, suspensions and other issues hanging over that.

:03:00. > :03:06.Thomas Barr, all of that history and tradition in an event in which he

:03:07. > :03:23.has excelled so much. A new Irish record to qualify. Can he do it. A

:03:24. > :03:30.false start. Culson holds his head in his hands. Thomas Barr's quest

:03:31. > :03:34.gets a little easier in terms of hopes of winning a medal. I am not

:03:35. > :03:38.sure he would have won because he has a horrible habit of finding ways

:03:39. > :03:47.not to win. He has just found another one. That is a big name to

:03:48. > :04:02.be raised from the final. The key thing for Thomas Barr -- he --

:04:03. > :04:06.erased. The Irishman have to compose himself

:04:07. > :04:13.and stick to his game plan because so far it has been a good one. Dear,

:04:14. > :04:19.oh dear. All of the experience he has. This is not the 100, 200. That

:04:20. > :04:36.can only be nervous. Thomas Barr, his first Olympic

:04:37. > :04:49.Games. Going for a medal for Ireland. Now we are down to seven.

:04:50. > :04:57.Thomas Barr will have Clement outside him, the favourite. The

:04:58. > :05:11.American. Two times world champion. He can be erratic.

:05:12. > :05:22.Away safely this time. Thomas Barr will have Clement to chase. Whyte

:05:23. > :05:33.went off quickly. The two Kenyans going well. Thomas Barr trying to

:05:34. > :05:43.stay in contact with the American. Thomas Barr will finish quickly, so

:05:44. > :05:49.do not write him off yet. Copello coming through. Thomas Barr a long

:05:50. > :05:56.way off but he will come charging down the home straight and clap --

:05:57. > :06:12.Clement. Thomas Barr not quite getting there. 47.70 five. It was a

:06:13. > :06:17.fitting final. He did not quite make it. He has run a brilliant race, you

:06:18. > :06:23.have to say. He was charging at the end. Can you have a silver medal.

:06:24. > :06:27.National records all over the place, not for Clement, but he will not

:06:28. > :06:36.care about that, he has won the gold medal. Copello worked hard and

:06:37. > :06:44.worked hard. They eat improvement for him. Thomas Barr has run under

:06:45. > :06:49.48 seconds. He smashed the Irish record again. That will be

:06:50. > :06:57.consolation for him. World-class 400 metres hurdling. Five hundredths of

:06:58. > :07:01.a second from a medal, but well done to Clement. He held it together and

:07:02. > :07:07.committed himself early and got the deserved victory. You know you have

:07:08. > :07:13.to give a massive round of applause to Thomas Barr. Under 48 seconds, a

:07:14. > :07:18.fourth place at the Olympics. Who would think when he came here that

:07:19. > :07:23.would happen? A great performance and one he should be proud of. Yet

:07:24. > :07:27.slightly tainted with the fact he did not manage to get the bronze

:07:28. > :07:32.medal. His performance through these championships, I think it would have

:07:33. > :07:38.been a lovely way to finish it. Clement in the middle of the field,

:07:39. > :07:42.always well-controlled. Once he gets off the final barrier, it is

:07:43. > :07:54.difficult for anybody to close him down. The Kenyan almost did that.

:07:55. > :08:05.Boniface. A great race and a great final. Colin, with the exception of

:08:06. > :08:10.Clement, because the American record... Everyone else has a

:08:11. > :08:18.national record. This has moved things on. We have said all year,

:08:19. > :08:22.the event is wide open. Four men running under 48 seconds in the

:08:23. > :08:25.final and sadly not enough for Thomas Barr, but the quality finally

:08:26. > :08:33.stepped up. We say with the 400 metres hurdler -- hurdles, we never

:08:34. > :08:40.know who will be the victor. This is what takes our breath away. It is a

:08:41. > :08:46.man killer of an event. The only thing close to it is the energy of

:08:47. > :08:50.the 800 metres where they are virtually sprinting nowadays. All of

:08:51. > :08:58.them do season's best, national records. It tells you how come

:08:59. > :09:02.Pettit if it is. It may answer the question is, when we say a final is

:09:03. > :09:07.great in the morning. When people produce their best, it seems to be

:09:08. > :09:14.working. OK. I just meant... You are right. Athletes will lift their

:09:15. > :09:20.game. What I love about Thomas Barr, when he qualified for the final, he

:09:21. > :09:22.had to ask when it was. Nonetheless, what a performance. His head in his

:09:23. > :09:37.hands. He knew he was so close. Until yesterday, the USA had not won

:09:38. > :09:44.a gold medal on the track. They won one yesterday in the women's high

:09:45. > :09:54.hurdles, and they have won another one with Kerron Clement. The winning

:09:55. > :09:58.time, 47.70 three. A new national record for Kenya and Turkey. A

:09:59. > :10:03.brilliant effort from Thomas Barr, smashing his own Irish record he

:10:04. > :10:12.broke in the semifinals, fourth place.

:10:13. > :10:20.STUDIO: Congratulations to Kerron Clement of the USA. Agonising for

:10:21. > :10:24.Thomas Barr in fourth place, but he did so well after an injury hit

:10:25. > :10:33.season and getting to the final. He will go again in the 4 x 400 heat.

:10:34. > :10:54.We are starting with the women and going in the first heat, Jamaica.

:10:55. > :10:59.Not including Elaine Thompson. Great Britain are going in this. A

:11:00. > :11:03.talented group. They say a national record there is the line-up. When

:11:04. > :11:10.you have that, you do not want to chop and change. You practise the

:11:11. > :11:20.hand over is time and again. It is a sense of comfort when you know what

:11:21. > :11:23.the mark sunlight. And when you exchange, if somebody throws out

:11:24. > :11:28.their arm, keep it close to the body. All of these things are

:11:29. > :11:40.particular, but it can make a big difference.

:11:41. > :11:47.Dean Asha Smith, fifth in the 200 metres last night. This Jamaican

:11:48. > :11:54.quartet, as I mentioned, no Elaine Thompson. The double gold medallist

:11:55. > :11:59.and Simone Facey. Veronica Campbell-Brown ran out of her lane

:12:00. > :12:04.in the 200 in the first round. Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The

:12:05. > :12:23.Netherlands top load their quartet. On the inside. Desiree Henry waiting

:12:24. > :12:49.on the second leg. Look at the Great Britain. Obviously

:12:50. > :12:59.Jamaica, the Netherlands. -- out for.

:13:00. > :13:06.I they go and three to go through automatically. Asha Philip leads

:13:07. > :13:12.Great Britain, running strongly at the moment. The hand over, it is a

:13:13. > :13:16.little bit close to Desiree Henry. Not the best hand over. A very safe

:13:17. > :13:27.hand over and Britain back in a good position at the moment. Dina

:13:28. > :13:32.Asher-Smith. Britain in the top three. Alongside Jamaica at the

:13:33. > :13:37.moment. The final change is good. Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce has it for

:13:38. > :13:46.Jamaica. Ukraine looked like they may get third. To give you an

:13:47. > :13:50.indicator of Jamaica's strength, that is 100th of a second inside the

:13:51. > :13:54.record Great Britain ran at the anniversary games last month but

:13:55. > :13:58.Great Britain safely through and everybody says that with a sigh of

:13:59. > :14:00.relief. Some laboured changes could improve, but the job was to get

:14:01. > :14:10.through to the final. Pair funny, it was a good run by all

:14:11. > :14:15.the women. Dina Asher-Smith will have to have some fatigue in her

:14:16. > :14:20.legs because of that 200. We will look at length seven and also

:14:21. > :14:32.Jamaica in Lane 5. We those teams to get through very well. Good, slick

:14:33. > :14:38.changing from the Jamaicans. Watch the Jamaicans. There is a little bit

:14:39. > :14:43.of anxiety, how Veronicas was going to run this because she had a lot of

:14:44. > :14:50.problems coming off it. She makes up a lot of ground. Looking at the

:14:51. > :14:57.British quartet, the second two changes were pretty good changes. It

:14:58. > :15:03.is a good, tidy run. I have no complaints whatsoever. Most

:15:04. > :15:06.importantly, they qualify. Jamaica's changing was very good, pretty

:15:07. > :15:10.strong and that is why they looked more comfortable. Let's have a look

:15:11. > :15:16.at Britain. The Netherlands, it is interesting what happened to them

:15:17. > :15:23.but look at the British run. Asher-Smith is controlled around

:15:24. > :15:26.this bend. -- Asha Philip. It is a safe change, a little clumsy because

:15:27. > :15:35.she pulls the baton into her. Desiree Henry. When something is

:15:36. > :15:40.really familiar... She knows exactly where Dina Asher-Smith's arm is

:15:41. > :15:47.going to be. This is when we keep a team together that is well oiled and

:15:48. > :15:53.well drilled. Neita very confident on this last leg. Even though she is

:15:54. > :15:58.young, she has gained experience and she has never let us down ever, with

:15:59. > :16:03.a good, flawless technique and no tension, which is what you want to

:16:04. > :16:09.do. Jamaica and the USA will be favourites but I think Britain have

:16:10. > :16:18.a great chance of a medal. The Netherlands, Dafne Schippers went to

:16:19. > :16:22.early and it all went wrong. Look at Schippers, she has gone far too

:16:23. > :16:29.early and she is waiting, waiting, outside the box. She has gone to

:16:30. > :16:33.early again, Dafne Schippers and that is what she did in the

:16:34. > :16:39.anniversary games, she went far too early. She is still in the box there

:16:40. > :16:43.but it is a stuttering changeover. I was watching them, she started and

:16:44. > :16:50.then she almost stopped and started again and lost maybe half a second.

:16:51. > :16:56.They are down in sixth place, the Netherlands. Jamaica and Great

:16:57. > :17:05.Britain, a long way clear and Ukraine also going through.

:17:06. > :17:12.You have been in such tremendous form, this team just clicks.

:17:13. > :17:16.Definitely, Dina Asher-Smith came in after a hard run last night so good

:17:17. > :17:20.job to her and the rest of the girls. Consistent with the times. We

:17:21. > :17:26.are happy with that and that will give us confidence going into the

:17:27. > :17:30.final. Asha Philip always gives the team a good start. What is it like

:17:31. > :17:35.when you have already had a taste of the Olympic atmosphere, to come in

:17:36. > :17:39.and you will not be fazed by it? It is exciting, after the 100, I

:17:40. > :17:46.thought I will be on the relay for the next run and it is so exciting.

:17:47. > :17:51.Just knowing we are on the track with a strong team. How was it with

:17:52. > :17:57.you, the quick turnaround from last night? Great performance from last

:17:58. > :18:03.night. The comeback out today and perform again... Thank you, it was

:18:04. > :18:06.tough, I am running on about three hours sleep. Looking forward to

:18:07. > :18:10.going back to bed but I know we have worked so hard as a relay team so

:18:11. > :18:15.there was no way I wasn't going to be year. You have had a taste of

:18:16. > :18:18.this atmosphere already and now you know you are going to be in the

:18:19. > :18:24.final at the Olympics and probably contending for a medal. It is really

:18:25. > :18:27.exciting. I was disappointed with my performance in the heat but I'm

:18:28. > :18:33.confident in this, that we could get to the final and get a medal. Who

:18:34. > :18:39.wants to be the medal spokesman? We have got to put ourselves in the

:18:40. > :18:43.best position. We're not going to let ourselves or anyone else down.

:18:44. > :18:45.We definitely won't give those girls are medal so they will have to try

:18:46. > :18:55.to take it from us. Great Britain safely through and

:18:56. > :18:58.they will have half an eye on this one because that medal chance will

:18:59. > :19:05.be enhanced with a couple not making it through. The United States, the

:19:06. > :19:11.standout team here. Trinidad and Tobago have a pretty good quartet.

:19:12. > :19:18.The German team are a good, young team. Tatjana Pinto, very

:19:19. > :19:24.experienced now, leading off. Luckenkemper and Rebecca Harz, two

:19:25. > :19:29.young talents for them. They are in seventh. Nigeria as well, a pretty

:19:30. > :19:32.good team, a mix of youth and experience. United States will have

:19:33. > :19:38.to be on their mettle here. In London, they broke the world record

:19:39. > :19:45.in the final but they have Bartoletta, Felix, Gardner. The run

:19:46. > :19:52.on the last leg has never run in a major Championship, that will be

:19:53. > :20:04.interesting. Semoy Hackett, the lead for Trinidad and Tobago. Lots of

:20:05. > :20:11.experience all over the place. All hoping they can go through safely.

:20:12. > :20:17.The United States in particular. Annakin Osan was fourth in their

:20:18. > :20:22.trials, she is on the last leg. That is why she gets a chance to run in

:20:23. > :20:26.the team. This quartet, I don't think would ever have run together

:20:27. > :20:33.before, from the USA, Bartoletta leading them off.

:20:34. > :20:43.Bartoletta will hand over the Allyson Felix. America started

:20:44. > :20:48.quickly, Germany going well. Not a good change for Germany, they are

:20:49. > :20:53.losing some ground on Nigeria. USA, well in this at the moment, Brazil

:20:54. > :20:59.along way back. The USA have dropped it, it is gone. The USA have dropped

:21:00. > :21:04.it. It is usually the men who messed it up with the Americans but it is

:21:05. > :21:09.the women this time. Germany leading, Trinidad and Tobago on the

:21:10. > :21:14.inside. Nigeria third. Germany going well, Brazil have come right through

:21:15. > :21:20.into fourth place. Germany are going to win it. Nigeria and then Trinidad

:21:21. > :21:24.and Tobago. The big news... America are going to finish, I've got no

:21:25. > :21:28.idea why, unless they feel as if they were somehow inhibited by one

:21:29. > :21:35.of the other teams, I didn't see anything to suggest that. I have no

:21:36. > :21:39.idea why they are finishing. We will have a look on the replay. That is

:21:40. > :21:46.the big news. The American women are normally so good. It is always the

:21:47. > :21:52.men we think are going to mess up but this time, it was Allyson Felix

:21:53. > :21:57.handing over the English Gardner. Let's see if we can have a look at

:21:58. > :22:01.this and see what happened. I was thinking the US are so well drilled

:22:02. > :22:04.and they come in and out of college teams all the time so baton

:22:05. > :22:08.exchanging never came into the picture. I thought there would be a

:22:09. > :22:14.couple of people with tired legs and that would be the cause. Very smooth

:22:15. > :22:21.from Bartoletta to Felix. Allyson Felix looking very controlled, let's

:22:22. > :22:28.have a look at what happened. The Brazilian came across and Allyson

:22:29. > :22:33.Felix got the baton knocked out of hand. I think that is why it didn't

:22:34. > :22:37.reach English Gardner. I think it was a very good idea they retrieved

:22:38. > :22:42.the baton and do finish. Out she goes and you can see the Brazilian

:22:43. > :22:47.was way too far over. I think that is the cause of the problem. Some

:22:48. > :22:52.wise heads out there, Allyson Felix, after an initial, obviously been

:22:53. > :22:57.distraught about what happened, then picked up the baton and went round

:22:58. > :23:00.and they will protest this. I suspect, given everything that has

:23:01. > :23:08.been going on with the protest, they have a very good case as you rightly

:23:09. > :23:16.pointed out. The USA at the moment, they did finish, they ran 66.71,

:23:17. > :23:22.which could be a new record! But they will obviously protest that.

:23:23. > :23:26.There is Felix and English Gardner, it wasn't their fault, Allyson Felix

:23:27. > :23:31.was definitely impeded by the arm of the Brazilian athlete who was in her

:23:32. > :23:35.lane. Did this happen recently, will be involved one of these a couple of

:23:36. > :23:42.Championships ago? I was trying to think but I think we certainly

:23:43. > :23:46.suffered from like that. That would have been a great catch from English

:23:47. > :23:53.Gardner Hadji court that. She would have been signed up, that is the

:23:54. > :23:54.shore. We will keep on top of this obviously but drama already in the

:23:55. > :24:11.relays. Lake has to go clear on this or she

:24:12. > :24:18.is out. Morgan Lake, 19 years of age and it has gone clear. She has shown

:24:19. > :24:29.real competitive temperament there. Third time. Guaranteed to progress

:24:30. > :24:35.to Saturday's final and that is really, really classy.

:24:36. > :24:43.Morgan Lake really got her run up right, she has been messed around

:24:44. > :24:45.with the start of these relays. She shows she has what it takes, I

:24:46. > :24:55.believe, 19 years of age. Your first Olympic final and you did

:24:56. > :24:59.it in some of the most difficult circumstances with a relay runners

:25:00. > :25:04.running in front of you and cameramen etc, how did you keep it

:25:05. > :25:09.together? It was hard but it was kind of good because it distracted

:25:10. > :25:13.me. I got it done, really happy to be in the final, it is what I came

:25:14. > :25:17.here to do and I will see what I can do when I get there. At the start of

:25:18. > :25:20.the day, coming into a competition where you know you have to equal

:25:21. > :25:25.your personal best, just to guarantee a place in the final, what

:25:26. > :25:29.thoughts go through your head? Training has been going well but it

:25:30. > :25:33.is very different competition. So many nerves and I didn't get much

:25:34. > :25:40.sleep so I came out here knowing I could jump 94, the equal my PB but

:25:41. > :25:44.doing it in the competition is a different thing. And the Olympics,

:25:45. > :25:51.of all competitions, but you showed you could and you played 1.92 on

:25:52. > :25:55.your first attempt and then 1.94, showing what a great competitor you

:25:56. > :25:59.are. You just have to get yourself in the zone and trust yourself and

:26:00. > :26:03.your run-up. It wasn't the easiest way to qualify but I did it so I am

:26:04. > :26:12.happy. You have and you should be happy, we will see when the final.

:26:13. > :26:21.China had some quick men on the third and fourth legs.

:26:22. > :26:29.Away they go cleanly this time, Mike Rodgers in that familiar headband

:26:30. > :26:39.out very quickly. Rodgers beginning to make some ground. Collins has the

:26:40. > :26:44.baton though. It is USA and China. France trying to hang in there. USA,

:26:45. > :26:48.decent enough change and they are beginning to take the lead but China

:26:49. > :26:54.goes strongly again. Three to go through automatically. It is in the

:26:55. > :26:58.hands of Jarrion Lawson, the youngster from USA and Canada going

:26:59. > :27:00.strongly and the USA come through Lawson and they take the lead,

:27:01. > :27:13.followed by China. That is a quick time, all these

:27:14. > :27:18.sprinting talent of the USA over the years, 37.66, with quicker men to

:27:19. > :27:23.come in as well with Brunel and Gatlin. They are very quick, great

:27:24. > :27:24.strength and depth. They always have that looked and that strength in

:27:25. > :27:33.depth. There was a lot of mess going on.

:27:34. > :27:41.Hamstrings were being pulled on the turn, I think maybe some missed

:27:42. > :27:45.baton changing. Let's have a look if we can pick up some of these things

:27:46. > :27:50.that seem to happen. USA as expected always going to be strong. Good,

:27:51. > :27:55.slick changes, some very quick men out there on the track which will be

:27:56. > :28:02.important. Let's look at these baton changes for the USA. It is a bit of

:28:03. > :28:08.a close change for the US, China, a little more extended. But France I

:28:09. > :28:09.think was the team I expected to go a little better and that didn't

:28:10. > :28:21.happen for them. It all went wrong for St Kitts and

:28:22. > :28:26.Nevis and I ain't the change from Collins and Clark. The top three,

:28:27. > :28:31.that is a Chinese record. We talked about their strength and they will

:28:32. > :28:37.be a factor. It was a good run from them. I said early in the race, we

:28:38. > :28:43.will look at the USA. St Kitts and Nevis were in a good position. This

:28:44. > :28:49.is the run from USA and China. USA starting well. Mike Rodgers, a great

:28:50. > :28:54.60 metres runner. I think when Collins comes storming in the out

:28:55. > :28:59.runner does not move. He has not moved. That is the cause of the

:29:00. > :29:05.problem. Tyson Gay snatches the baton. He is a great bend runner. St

:29:06. > :29:13.Kitts and Nevis, the out runner is not prepared, he was not waiting. He

:29:14. > :29:23.was giving himself a clap to get ready, Alistair Clark. It has all

:29:24. > :29:35.gone wrong for them. STEVE CRAM: Britain have Jamaica in

:29:36. > :29:42.Lane 3 to worry about. Germany are well drilled. A solid quartet. Japan

:29:43. > :29:46.have a good quartet and rumours they have broken their national record in

:29:47. > :29:54.training, going under 38 seconds, even. Brazil have won medals in this

:29:55. > :30:00.before in Sydney. Silver medal. Atlanta 96 it was a bronze medal. I

:30:01. > :30:06.do not think this quartet is up to that but they will hope they can

:30:07. > :30:17.make it through here. What about pressure on this young man. Minzie

:30:18. > :30:22.has been brought in, never been to an Olympics or World Championships

:30:23. > :30:26.and has the responsibility of leading off an experienced Jamaican

:30:27. > :30:31.team and if he messes up, the whole world will not forgive him because

:30:32. > :30:38.we want Usain Bolt in the final, of course we do. They have lots of

:30:39. > :30:43.experience after Minzie. And now he concentrates. He was third in the

:30:44. > :30:49.Jamaican championships. Richard Kilty has done this so many times

:30:50. > :30:57.for Great Britain. Almost breaking the British record this year, 37.70

:30:58. > :31:05.eight. Five hundredths off the British best. Jamaica are in lane

:31:06. > :31:11.number three. Trinidad, let's not forget them. Not the best team they

:31:12. > :31:21.have ever had. Away they go. Richard Kilty will

:31:22. > :31:26.hand to Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. A good change for Great Britain and

:31:27. > :31:31.Jamaica are safely through but going well on the outside, Japan are

:31:32. > :31:38.flying and Germany are trying to get back into it. Look at Japan flying.

:31:39. > :31:43.Great Britain have to get into the top three. We are in third or fourth

:31:44. > :31:56.at the moment. Jamaica will come through. Japan. Will he make third?

:31:57. > :32:01.No. Trinidad do make it. It was not such a good first change. The second

:32:02. > :32:07.one, the first change was not bad, the second was not very good, we

:32:08. > :32:12.lost time. It was meant to be a safe and easy progression, but these

:32:13. > :32:16.other teams are flying. I warned you Japan have just smashed their

:32:17. > :32:23.national record. The rumours were definitely true. They have run

:32:24. > :32:29.37.68, which is quicker than the British national record, and that is

:32:30. > :32:38.why that was a tough qualification. 38.06 is their time. That will mean

:32:39. > :32:45.Great Britain... I am just checking. I think we will be all right as

:32:46. > :32:50.fastest losers. I think we are. You don't like that, you want automatic

:32:51. > :32:56.qualification. Richard Kilty has a tough job because the inside lane is

:32:57. > :33:01.tight. People have mentioned it. They had a slip change to Harry.

:33:02. > :33:07.Let's watch what happens, spot-on. Harry comes in very quickly and I

:33:08. > :33:14.think James was caught unawares. He could afford to drive harder and

:33:15. > :33:20.extend that baton change. Again, no problem. I think already, we can see

:33:21. > :33:30.from this that CJ had a lot of work to do and that to gain on talented

:33:31. > :33:35.athletes. Great for us to see. Usain Bolt will have to hurtle down the

:33:36. > :33:41.home straight, for Jamaica, which is what everybody would like to see.

:33:42. > :33:47.Richard Kilty is strong. The change no problems. Harry does that, which

:33:48. > :33:53.he does all the time. Never be afraid, he is used to it. But that,

:33:54. > :33:57.he catches James Irving. James had to readjust. He was tight to the

:33:58. > :34:04.inside line. He could've almost stepped on a barrier. That was time

:34:05. > :34:11.wasted. The guys working hard. That could be extended, but it is moved.

:34:12. > :34:17.We are in lane one and he was so close to the curb. Whether that

:34:18. > :34:25.affected him. You cannot step on the line either, but step on the kerb.

:34:26. > :34:32.You think the lane had an effect? Hugely. That is one of the big

:34:33. > :34:35.things. They will get that out of their mind but it could happen in

:34:36. > :34:41.the final. The fastest losers will get lane one or two, which is not

:34:42. > :34:54.good for the medal chances. Look at this quartet. Kiryu, the great

:34:55. > :35:03.junior talent. Let's find out about the British. It was always going to

:35:04. > :35:08.be tough from Lane 1. I have not seen any other team run back quickly

:35:09. > :35:16.from Lane 1. We can take positives and hopefully get an outside lane in

:35:17. > :35:22.the final. We could not do more. We ran great legs. I am proud we got

:35:23. > :35:26.the job done from a tight lane. The danger is as a fastest loser, you

:35:27. > :35:36.could be in Lane 1 And lane to again. This is a competition, we

:35:37. > :35:42.come here expecting anything. We got Lane 1. We had to run and as Richard

:35:43. > :35:48.said, we have given our all. I felt we were competitive. We have put in

:35:49. > :35:52.hard work. We have to move forward, we are in the final. Other teams

:35:53. > :35:58.like China and Japan are setting Asian records. Going back to what

:35:59. > :36:03.Richard said, the time is probably the fastest ever from Lane 1. It is

:36:04. > :36:09.annoying because the Brits seem to get Lane 1 lately. I do not know if

:36:10. > :36:13.it is a conspiracy by Mac we did well and let's pray we get a decent

:36:14. > :36:16.name because we want to be competitive. You had to bring the

:36:17. > :36:24.team home. Did you realise you were chasing down third? Not really. My

:36:25. > :36:28.main job was to bring it home safely and I knew we would qualify. The

:36:29. > :36:35.lads did a great job, I am proud of them. It would have been ashamed to

:36:36. > :36:44.not come away with a medal. The guys, we have an amazing squad.

:36:45. > :36:49.James Dasaolu, Danny Talbot, the team is huge. We are a family. We

:36:50. > :36:54.will fight like a family in this final and no matter who comes in and

:36:55. > :37:01.goes out, you will have faith in them and we will deliver the best

:37:02. > :37:03.performance. Well done. Thanks to the national lottery because without

:37:04. > :37:16.them... Japan and Jamaica going through.

:37:17. > :37:21.Japan have a new national record. Great Britain go through as fastest

:37:22. > :37:25.losers, with Brazil, which will please the home crowd.

:37:26. > :37:31.Some news about Brazil in the women's race. They appeared to

:37:32. > :37:35.impede the USA. Brazil have been disqualified. America are still

:37:36. > :37:40.disqualified because they dropped the baton. They had to go out of the

:37:41. > :37:46.lane to pick it up will stop the facts Brazil are disqualified, it

:37:47. > :37:50.may make the job easier to have the USA reinstated. We will keep you

:37:51. > :37:55.updated. They think they were impeded by Brazil.

:37:56. > :38:01.STUDIO: Great Britain's men get themselves into the final as one of

:38:02. > :38:06.the fastest losers. It is usually them we are talking about dropping

:38:07. > :38:12.the baton, four out of the last five games Laurel they have been

:38:13. > :38:19.disqualified but at the moment, USA have been disqualified. You would

:38:20. > :38:22.think if they stay out of the competition, and even better chance

:38:23. > :38:28.for the Great Britain team to come away with a medal. The last time

:38:29. > :38:34.that happened, we are talking Los Angeles 1984, 32 years ago. We will

:38:35. > :38:40.find out tomorrow night. It will be late on Friday night, if you want to

:38:41. > :38:45.stay up, but after the drama we have seen, definitely worth staying up

:38:46. > :38:56.for. Today, a good chance for a medal for Liam Heath and Schofield.

:38:57. > :39:05.They powered into the final determined to come away with a

:39:06. > :39:11.medal. The key is making the most of both athletes in the boat. You need

:39:12. > :39:19.to get 100% out of both guys to have any chance. Both need to be in the

:39:20. > :39:25.condition of their lives. And they need to execute in perfect

:39:26. > :39:25.synchronicity. The

:39:26. > :39:33.synchronicity. The boat itself is just a blur.

:39:34. > :39:40.Crossing the line, desperately trying to figure out where we have

:39:41. > :39:46.come. I did not have a clue and when we were told we had the bronze, in

:39:47. > :39:53.relief and joy, I snapped the paddles across my legs.

:39:54. > :40:04.Stepping up on the podium was incredible. Almost dreamlike. You

:40:05. > :40:09.remember it. Liam Heath and Jon Schofield, bronze-medallists. The

:40:10. > :40:14.smiles really say it. We did pretty well there, but this time I think we

:40:15. > :40:24.can be more ruthless about how we prepare and execute and hopefully

:40:25. > :40:29.that will give us more of an edge. We are more mature as athletes and

:40:30. > :40:37.competitors and we attack each race in the same style but with a bit

:40:38. > :40:43.more knowledge and experience. We have been together since 2010. I do

:40:44. > :40:49.not think there is any other canoes we race then are still together now

:40:50. > :40:55.and differently not sustain the same performance level throughout. We

:40:56. > :41:04.have pretty much one a medal in the 200 almost every world we have been

:41:05. > :41:08.to. It is wanting to be in the back

:41:09. > :41:12.together and wanting to improve. In the sport we have done quite a lot

:41:13. > :41:16.since 2012. Even though we are faster now than we were in 2012, it

:41:17. > :41:22.is probably even harder to win medals at the moment. You always

:41:23. > :41:26.want to do better and see how far you can push yourselves as athletes.

:41:27. > :41:32.You can't do any better than an Olympic gold, can you? Having

:41:33. > :41:37.unfinished business from London, we know what we are going there to do.

:41:38. > :41:40.We are racing to win as we always do.

:41:41. > :41:46.STUDIO: Unfinished business from the pair of Heath and Schofield. Pipped

:41:47. > :41:53.to the line in London to second place by the Romanian pair. Can they

:41:54. > :41:59.change their record in Rio? It is a beautiful sight at Lagoa this

:42:00. > :42:03.afternoon. The perfect spot for medal winning. Over to Patrick

:42:04. > :42:27.Winterton and Helen Reeves. Great Britain in three. They had a

:42:28. > :42:34.fantastic semifinal. They looked tremendously sharp in the semifinal.

:42:35. > :42:42.Away they go. Olympic glory 30 seconds away. Lithuania start

:42:43. > :42:47.stronger. Heath and Schofield left a little bit behind. The big boat

:42:48. > :42:52.belongs to Germany, but they are trailing. Spain and Lithuania in the

:42:53. > :43:01.middle. Spain coming strong. Still no sign from the British. In third

:43:02. > :43:12.position. They start to accelerate. It is still the Spaniards, the gold

:43:13. > :43:16.goes to Spain. Tight between Great Britain and Lithuania. Photo

:43:17. > :43:21.finishes throughout. Christian Toro and Saul Craviotto, they had an

:43:22. > :43:27.impressive win in the World Cup, but not as impressive as their Olympic

:43:28. > :43:33.final run. They took the silver in the K2 500 four years ago and have

:43:34. > :43:40.come here and take in the K2 200. They looked fantastic and looked

:43:41. > :43:46.fantastic yesterday. Now, Great Britain, the silver medal. One

:43:47. > :43:51.better than in London. They will be delighted. It was a fantastic

:43:52. > :43:56.performance. It was a slow start from Heath and Schofield, below the

:43:57. > :43:59.performance of the start of the semifinal but they believe where

:44:00. > :44:07.others might not have done and they came through to improve their run

:44:08. > :44:13.from London 2012. Let's have a look. Heath and Schofield in Lane 3 on the

:44:14. > :44:18.far side and you can see the bow of their boat. I think we picked it up

:44:19. > :44:24.later. They are starting to come back into the race at this stage.

:44:25. > :44:31.Still trailing Lithuania at that stage. Spain were a long way ahead.

:44:32. > :44:40.This is the finish. The lunge was perfect. That is timing. It is all

:44:41. > :44:46.about racing to the line and there is a word for it and that is what

:44:47. > :44:54.they did. They got it. 0.03 of a second. They got their silver medal.

:44:55. > :44:58.Look at that. They will be so excited. What a brilliant way for

:44:59. > :45:04.Liam to start his Olympic campaign. He will be going again tomorrow and

:45:05. > :45:09.looking to see if he can go one better again.

:45:10. > :45:19.They have done is so well at World Championship level. They have now

:45:20. > :45:21.got a bronze and silver at Olympic and are rapidly becoming our most

:45:22. > :45:32.successful ever sprinters. We now have a medal from the sprint

:45:33. > :45:37.to add to those we got from the slalom with Joe Clarke and NEC to

:45:38. > :45:41.with Florence and Hounslow. It is donated to be a very good Olympics

:45:42. > :45:48.for the British paddlers and it is not over yet. The men's K on 200

:45:49. > :45:52.metres tomorrow. Liam Heath as we saw is on good form. Al-Habsi could

:45:53. > :46:03.do better in that are needed in the K2. And the women's K four.

:46:04. > :46:10.A silver medal, what was the feeling as you cross the line? It is so fast

:46:11. > :46:14.and furious, we just put our head down and went for it and you pop it

:46:15. > :46:20.up at the end and wonder what happened? And wait for the score to

:46:21. > :46:24.come up. You have no idea what had happened? I could tell the Spanish

:46:25. > :46:27.were ahead of us but our race is on the other side of the course

:46:28. > :46:31.compared to the others so I couldn't have guessed where we came. There

:46:32. > :46:37.were a heap of people in front of me, sat at the back of the boat. A

:46:38. > :46:45.great lunch at the end as well. We did give it a bit of a lunge. You go

:46:46. > :46:50.for the blocks and just hit it as hard as you can. Sometimes, it can

:46:51. > :46:55.be the peak speed of the whole race. We read you were talking about the

:46:56. > :47:04.fact you had unfinished business from London. You got the bronze. How

:47:05. > :47:09.satisfying is it to get the silver? So satisfying. This guy is on fire

:47:10. > :47:13.in his K one. He has been killing me in training and I didn't want to let

:47:14. > :47:21.him down. He is the best guy out there. To get that is amazing. . I

:47:22. > :47:24.am in the front of the boat and he's telling me what to do, I don't

:47:25. > :47:29.really have to think, I just have to go as hard as I can with a bucket

:47:30. > :47:37.drops. A wonderful combination. How long can it go on for? One more? I'm

:47:38. > :47:42.not sure yet. We will take some time out and my wife may have something

:47:43. > :47:45.to say about it as well! You also have some unfinished business

:47:46. > :47:48.yourself, Liam, well done tomorrow and we look forward to seeing you

:47:49. > :47:54.later in the week. Thank you very much.

:47:55. > :48:00.Do you think they were happy about it? I think they were! Enjoying that

:48:01. > :48:06.moment with their fists in the air on the medal podium down at the

:48:07. > :48:10.Lagoa Stadium. Heath and Schofield collected their silver medal, one

:48:11. > :48:15.better than they did at London 2012 and a very deserved silver medal as

:48:16. > :48:20.well. Job not done yet for Liam Heath who has his 200-metre heats to

:48:21. > :48:25.come tomorrow. He will enjoy that the now. What a way to celebrate his

:48:26. > :48:31.birthday week. Outstanding from them and now it means after the bronze

:48:32. > :48:37.medal, there was one earlier, we got a silver now, Great Britain up to 52

:48:38. > :48:46.medals. No medals at all yesterday, day 13, we like the look of you.

:48:47. > :48:51.Some athletics news to bring you and before we went to the canoe, you

:48:52. > :48:57.would have seen the drama we had at the athletic stadium and in the

:48:58. > :49:01.women's 4x100 metre relay, we saw the reigning champions, USA, not get

:49:02. > :49:04.their baton around the track and it meant they were disqualified. But

:49:05. > :49:09.they appealed that decision on the grounds that the baton was knocked

:49:10. > :49:13.out of the hand at the second exchange by Brazil. Brazil were then

:49:14. > :49:18.disqualified and America then launch their appeal. In the last few

:49:19. > :49:23.minutes, the IAAF have confirmed the USA have won their appeal but if

:49:24. > :49:27.they are to make it into the final tomorrow, they will have to run

:49:28. > :49:33.again. They will have to run on their own in the Olympic Stadium and

:49:34. > :49:37.beat 42.70, that was recorded by the slowest of the fastest losers and

:49:38. > :49:41.that was China. So America have a last chance saloon and they will run

:49:42. > :49:49.again to try to retain that Olympic medal. They will run again today, be

:49:50. > :49:53.8pm Rio time, midnight local to our UK time. So America have a reprieve.

:49:54. > :49:58.I don't know of that has happened before. I would love someone to tell

:49:59. > :50:05.us. America have a chance to go again. We will see tonight. OK, take

:50:06. > :50:13.a breather and let's go to Carioca Arena 3, just beyond the flags, we

:50:14. > :50:18.will watch some tae kwon do and the first return to the stage for Jade

:50:19. > :50:23.Jones who you remember won the gold in the 57 kilograms category in

:50:24. > :50:27.2012. She was the first ever youth Olympic gold-medallist the Great

:50:28. > :50:29.Britain in 2010, can she be the first Great Britain fight to defend

:50:30. > :50:45.her gold medal? You little beauty! And a teenage

:50:46. > :50:50.kicking superstar from north Wales is the Olympic champion. That is it,

:50:51. > :51:02.Bianca Walkden is world champion. Is a lot of what you were doing

:51:03. > :51:06.today trying to programme the subconscious moment when you are

:51:07. > :51:11.fighting? Anything that happens, you are able to react? Yes, definitely,

:51:12. > :51:16.it is a totally new system for the Olympics that we haven't been used

:51:17. > :51:23.to and it is a lot harder to score. Also going high and punches, so we

:51:24. > :51:29.have to totally change our game. Right, ladies, I have watched you

:51:30. > :51:33.train, spa, hit each other, defend with pants, now I want to see how

:51:34. > :51:40.that dynamic changes by coming to your house because your housemates,

:51:41. > :51:45.you live together. You have got a capital? LAUGHTER

:51:46. > :51:52.How was it living together because you have just come from a session?

:51:53. > :51:57.It is good that we are different. If there were a house full of 57 kilos,

:51:58. > :52:01.I wouldn't want to get too close to them or be too friendly but because

:52:02. > :52:07.we are totally opposite ends of the weights, we can fully help each

:52:08. > :52:16.other. Then switch on when you need to? Just you guys live here? Yes.

:52:17. > :52:17.Why do you have two fridges? She is a heavyweight so she needs another

:52:18. > :52:28.one! LAUGHTER Definitely focused on Rio, healthy

:52:29. > :52:38.food in there. Can I see where you chill out? Four years ago, Jade,

:52:39. > :52:42.London 2012, Olympic champion, did you expect that? I think it was the

:52:43. > :52:47.journey going to the Olympics was fast and they only came into the

:52:48. > :52:51.academy in 2010 so that was two years ago. No one was even expecting

:52:52. > :52:57.me to go to the Olympics so it all went so fast and then six months

:52:58. > :53:02.ago, I got picked and I had to give everything I had. I did believe I

:53:03. > :53:07.could win. I was going there to win. But when I had done it, I felt a bit

:53:08. > :53:13.lost. There was so much pressure and I felt so lost. But now, I am in a

:53:14. > :53:19.good place and I tried to do it again. Have you had to try to

:53:20. > :53:26.full-back in with Taekwondo? Definitely, there are times when you

:53:27. > :53:31.get a hard loss and there are times you can't do it and you don't want

:53:32. > :53:35.to. You are not enjoying it. But I just revert back to what I was doing

:53:36. > :53:41.when I was a kid. I loved taekwondo and I loved the kicks and I just

:53:42. > :53:49.wanted to win. Bianca, was it difficult, Jade winning gold? She is

:53:50. > :53:56.your friend and obviously you would please, but were you sad you

:53:57. > :54:00.couldn't compete? It wasn't nice at all because we live together and I

:54:01. > :54:04.was training with her and the next minute I broke my leg and Jade goes

:54:05. > :54:10.and gets to go on and win the Olympics. But I couldn't do anything

:54:11. > :54:16.about it. But as she showed, it can happen. I can take it one way and

:54:17. > :54:22.hate her but I can take it another way and think, look what she has

:54:23. > :54:26.done. It feels old even more special because we are doing it together

:54:27. > :54:34.now, it is our chance to both get a gold medal together. Huge hopes for

:54:35. > :54:39.both of those British girls, not least the Jade Jones, who is a

:54:40. > :54:43.sensation and for one so young. Huge popularity increasing in the sport,

:54:44. > :54:49.not just in Great Britain but also in her home country, back in Wales.

:54:50. > :54:51.Already a very popular sport but they have made a few tweaks to the

:54:52. > :55:05.taekwondo. Here is your guide. Taekwondo originates

:55:06. > :55:08.in Korea and combines It became a fully-fledged Olympic

:55:09. > :55:14.sport in Sydney in 2000. Each contest has three rounds of two

:55:15. > :55:17.minutes and a competitor can win on points or if their opponent

:55:18. > :55:19.is unable to continue. Points are awarded for permitted,

:55:20. > :55:22.accurate and powerful blows Attacks to the body can be made

:55:23. > :55:27.using a fist or foot, but an athlete can only

:55:28. > :55:30.use their feet to strike the area Punches to the head and attacks

:55:31. > :55:35.to the spine are not allowed. The only techniques

:55:36. > :55:37.permitted are kicks, of the foot below the ankle,

:55:38. > :55:43.and punches, where the athlete uses the knuckle part of

:55:44. > :55:45.a tightly clenched fist. Scoring differs depending

:55:46. > :55:47.on where or how an One point is awarded for a valid

:55:48. > :55:52.attack to the body protector, but if the attack is a turning

:55:53. > :55:55.or reverse kick to the body, An athlete will receive three points

:55:56. > :56:00.for a legal kick to the head, and if it is a turning kick,

:56:01. > :56:03.it achieves the maximum four points. After the three rounds,

:56:04. > :56:06.the competitor with the most points wins the match, but in the event

:56:07. > :56:09.of a tie, a golden point overtime round is held in which the first

:56:10. > :56:24.athlete to register Medals already up for grabs but Jade

:56:25. > :56:28.Jones will have to beat the Moroccan fighter to get through first in her

:56:29. > :56:31.round of 16. Let's see how the defending champion gets on in

:56:32. > :56:58.Carioca Arena 3. Great Britain in blue, Morocco in

:56:59. > :57:03.red. Here Jade Jones is. Cracking first shot, what an attempt to score

:57:04. > :57:11.a point, that is all she needs. Push kick to the body. Footwork

:57:12. > :57:32.exceptional, just moving out of the way. Nicely blocking.

:57:33. > :57:45.Jade went for the back kick and Bakkal just came in and made

:57:46. > :57:46.contact. There is another push kick, but just not making sufficient

:57:47. > :58:01.contact. An attempt at the head. Nicely

:58:02. > :58:12.blocked by Bakkal. She is not allowing Jade Jones in.

:58:13. > :58:19.A pin-up girl all over Wales when she won in London. Of course, there

:58:20. > :58:25.are Welsh people all over the world at the moment watching this and in

:58:26. > :58:28.of course Great Britain, watching this with great expectations of

:58:29. > :58:35.Jade. That is the thing she maybe would have been concerning herself

:58:36. > :58:38.with. She hates and fears losing and sometimes holds back when she should

:58:39. > :58:47.come forward in these situations. She has gone appoint down, the

:58:48. > :59:01.Morocco. Bakkal not being phased. There is a kick to the head, three

:59:02. > :59:05.points. Jade is up for- two. -- 4-2. The kicks are so snappy and fast.

:59:06. > :59:12.Bakkal didn't even see that one coming.

:59:13. > :59:27.Jade Jones not in control, but with the advantage. She looked... Sharp.

:59:28. > :59:34.I have to remain impartial, but great to see a Welsh woman fighting

:59:35. > :59:40.the highest levels. A lovely blocks, using the arm. Straight into a back

:59:41. > :59:54.kick. Did not make contact. That was also blocked. It was a bit low.

:59:55. > :00:02.Anxious times as a fighter, but look at that, right around the chops.

:00:03. > :00:18.Take that one. Thank you very much. I think Naomi

:00:19. > :00:31.So fast, lightning quick with the feed and she gets a point.

:00:32. > :00:38.Concedes one, 5-3. She is aggressive. Many fighters are, but

:00:39. > :00:43.the difference is the speed she shows. By far the quickest we have

:00:44. > :00:52.seen, I am sure. And again. The power, as well. This is real

:00:53. > :00:57.conviction with every kick. Naima Bakkal going a little low, not

:00:58. > :01:04.registering on the pads. The sensor is also in the helmet. Obviously not

:01:05. > :01:18.around the face area. That is where the video replay card can be used.

:01:19. > :01:25.She is strong accord, which she gets up on one leg, she seems to stay

:01:26. > :01:27.there longer and her opponents struggled to read it, even though

:01:28. > :01:43.they know what she is capable of. Naima Bakkal has picked up another

:01:44. > :01:45.point. Picking them off one at a time. It is the cleanest fight we

:01:46. > :02:01.have seen. Just getting the measure of each

:02:02. > :02:15.other. The footwork is exceptional. They are towed to toe, these two. --

:02:16. > :02:19.toe to toe. Do not rule out Naima Bakkal, she is in for this. The end

:02:20. > :02:24.of the second-round and the is now four. Jade Jones with the lead but

:02:25. > :02:39.with the coach, I am sure, with plenty to say.

:02:40. > :02:55.The action in the second round. A lot of body shots. One point at a

:02:56. > :03:03.time. That is fine will -- fine. I think most of Jade Jones' opponents

:03:04. > :03:09.will be stunned by the speed these kicks are coming in. Attacking and

:03:10. > :03:17.counter attacking each other. One round to go. People ask me, how come

:03:18. > :03:25.I am not confident when I have Wigan so much, says Jade Jones. She says

:03:26. > :03:36.she fears losing -- when I have won so much.

:03:37. > :03:44.Defending the medals she won in London four years ago. Nice footwork

:03:45. > :04:04.from Jade Jones. I think that was for a low kick.

:04:05. > :04:09.Awarded against Jade. It will not faze her.

:04:10. > :04:17.You can see Jade ready to attack. Naima Bakkal defending well,

:04:18. > :04:29.blocking what is coming at her at the moment. We can hear Jade's coach

:04:30. > :04:36.saying, get back in there. You have got to work for this. She is being

:04:37. > :04:46.forced to work the whole way. Bakkal is a dangerous opponent. The Union

:04:47. > :04:53.Jack is adorning the left leg. Ready to strike another moment and another

:04:54. > :04:58.point for Jade Jones. She goes up high. Brilliant. Talk us through

:04:59. > :05:05.that. Not much to say, really, a lovely chop kick to the head. Three

:05:06. > :05:11.points. Great speed, again. She brought it around to the right. It

:05:12. > :05:17.is a different way she is coming, Bakkal, she is vulnerable. She is

:05:18. > :05:43.really pushing now. Close to the end of the third round.

:05:44. > :05:54.The back kick coming in at speed. Able to get their head around.

:05:55. > :06:01.Commanding this fight, Jade Jones Great Britain. She is going through.

:06:02. > :06:07.Safely through. We might even see a smile in a moment. 12-4 in the end.

:06:08. > :06:12.Her opponent was beaten badly on the scoreboard but make no mistake,

:06:13. > :06:19.Naima Bakkal from Morocco did not fight that in a bad way, it was just

:06:20. > :06:25.about how good that lady was, Jade Jones of Great Britain. The quality

:06:26. > :06:31.of the kicks and speed and power and accuracy, and she cruises through

:06:32. > :06:33.this first round. We will see her later today in the quarterfinals.

:06:34. > :06:38.The headhunted takes another scalp. Let's watch her in action. The push

:06:39. > :06:46.kick. There it is. Chop kick to the head,

:06:47. > :07:01.thank you very much, three points. Just seems able to pick out the head

:07:02. > :07:17.when it matters. A word from her coach before she

:07:18. > :07:22.departs. Her confidence must be high, Jade Jones is through to the

:07:23. > :07:26.quarterfinals. STUDIO: The defence of her Olympic

:07:27. > :07:36.title off to a winning start and she will next fight the Belgian who came

:07:37. > :07:42.through in her bout. Raheleh Asemani.

:07:43. > :07:58.That fight will take place at 7:30pm your time, in about two and a half

:07:59. > :08:02.hours. But back by popular demand, the bell of great British golden

:08:03. > :08:07.moments has rung again, in the triathlon. It was looking fantastic

:08:08. > :08:12.for Alistair Brownlee and Jonny Brownlee. Alistair Brownlee has

:08:13. > :08:17.retained the Olympic title he won at London 2012 and he even had time to

:08:18. > :08:21.grab hold of a great British flag and ambled towards the finishing

:08:22. > :08:27.line. His brother Jonny Brownlee was six seconds behind him, improving

:08:28. > :08:33.the bronze medal he won in 2012. No multiple world champion in

:08:34. > :08:38.triathlon. And it looks like a cakewalk. He has had injury worries

:08:39. > :08:44.all year. Jonny Brownlee has been looking good. The two of them, I

:08:45. > :08:50.wonder what they do now. Yes, have a lie down. You deserve that. More

:08:51. > :08:54.medals won for Team GB today. I told you it was a good day. Henri

:08:55. > :09:04.Schoeman of South Africa took the bronze medal. He seems very happy

:09:05. > :09:08.about it. A South African on the mend's triathlon medal podium and

:09:09. > :09:11.fortunately, there are two Brits bonnet and afterwards they met

:09:12. > :09:21.Jonathan Edwards. Just an unbelievable performance,

:09:22. > :09:26.sum up your emotions. Every day this year has been so hard. I have woken

:09:27. > :09:34.up in pain every day. That was so hard. The swim was not quick. We

:09:35. > :09:39.knew before the race, the first two laps would be crucial. The last

:09:40. > :09:45.couple of weeks we have been training, commit on the first couple

:09:46. > :09:49.of laps. As soon as we were halfway through we had a good gap and I was

:09:50. > :09:54.like, we are going to get two medals and it was just a run for it. Did

:09:55. > :09:59.you know at that stage which muddles? I was pretty confident we

:10:00. > :10:04.would get first and second. I did not know entirely which way they

:10:05. > :10:08.would go. I had the edge on him the last couple of races, but he has

:10:09. > :10:14.killed me in training almost every day. I have been going through hell

:10:15. > :10:19.this year. He is better than view in training in terms of the 10K run? In

:10:20. > :10:25.sessions, yes. We have both been flying and wishing each other to the

:10:26. > :10:31.max. Racing around sessions, which is good, but he has had the edge. I

:10:32. > :10:37.was not quite sure. I knew I had to go through hell today and I did. I

:10:38. > :10:40.talk about the mental edge, is that what you have over your brother? I

:10:41. > :10:46.am not a massive fan of the mental thing. The only thing in my favour

:10:47. > :10:52.is I have that more than endurance -based engine. But we have both

:10:53. > :10:59.worked so hard on the bike. It might not have come across. The race was

:11:00. > :11:07.won with the first two laps with the bike and we went hard. It was not a

:11:08. > :11:13.quick run like London. One last question. Coming down the finishing

:11:14. > :11:19.line, you are walking, what is going through your mind? I was delighted.

:11:20. > :11:26.You are on that road. I had the gap after six kilometres. You are trying

:11:27. > :11:31.to focus. Keep going, think about your technique, keep on pushing. I

:11:32. > :11:38.got onto the blue carpet at the end of I thought, I have won. I was so

:11:39. > :11:43.happy. The last time in London, that gap was six, seven seconds. I was

:11:44. > :11:47.like, I have to keep going. This time I knew I had the chance to

:11:48. > :11:51.enjoy it. It will probably never happen again, so you have to enjoy

:11:52. > :12:00.it. You never know, Tokyo. Brilliant. STUDIO: Enjoy it, he did.

:12:01. > :12:03.Alistair Brownlee, once again, is the Olympic triathlon champion and

:12:04. > :12:09.in a couple of days we will find out if Great Britain's women can get on

:12:10. > :12:12.the podium. Helen Jenkins, Vicky Holland will be there for Great

:12:13. > :12:28.Britain. When your organs -- Jorgensen the woman to

:12:29. > :12:35.beat. I think that is medal number 20. We will bring you badminton now.

:12:36. > :12:39.After the efforts of Ellis and Langridge in the men's doubles, they

:12:40. > :12:45.got the bronze medal. We will show you the gold medal match in the

:12:46. > :12:51.women's doubles competition. There are no Chinese players in this one.

:12:52. > :13:00.They won 54 years ago. It is between the Japanese pair and the Danes.

:13:01. > :13:05.Denmark are the most successful European nation in badminton. It

:13:06. > :13:15.will not be a cakewalk for either of these teams. Going for goals. Live

:13:16. > :13:16.badminton action now. Peter Blackburn and Gillian Clarke will

:13:17. > :13:52.talk us through. Clever. Good, fighting spirit by the

:13:53. > :14:00.Danes. There is the half chance. Still couldn't finish it off, what a

:14:01. > :14:04.good rally. That is the work for the frontcourt player. And that is where

:14:05. > :14:11.the left and right hand combination come in. I think that was probably

:14:12. > :14:24.the best rally of the match so far. That is the subtle variation that

:14:25. > :14:51.will give them the reward. Very disappointing that the public

:14:52. > :14:52.address has to remind people about the flashlights on cameras or

:14:53. > :15:10.phones. So, it is the European champions,

:15:11. > :15:54.Christina Pedersen and Juhl you have the advantage.

:15:55. > :16:05.The focus on the first three shots of the rally. Patient, I think was

:16:06. > :16:10.the message they're in their attacking play. Patient and varied.

:16:11. > :16:34.It is good advice. Variation, serving out wide. Didn't

:16:35. > :16:50.bring any reward. But I like the idea of the variation on that serve.

:16:51. > :16:54.She is flicking a lot, isn't she? Matsutomo, throughout her Olympic

:16:55. > :16:57.campaign, seem to have lost confidence on her low serve. She

:16:58. > :17:06.hasn't lost confidence coming forward, that was brilliant. Really

:17:07. > :17:11.well read and that is what you want to look for, reading the shuttle,

:17:12. > :17:17.anticipating and moving forward and get the advantage at the frontcourt.

:17:18. > :17:23.Matsutomo is very good at Bontinck that play, moving forward, probably

:17:24. > :17:24.the stronger of the two in the pair, looking to intercept and move

:17:25. > :17:41.forward at the frontcourt. I agree. Is another flick serve, this time,

:17:42. > :17:49.it is long. Inside the tram is the double serve. It can become a real

:17:50. > :17:52.problem if you have just lost confidence in your short serve

:17:53. > :17:56.because it just builds and builds after match after match and used

:17:57. > :18:04.start to think about it rather than rushing through to the line. Getting

:18:05. > :18:08.the shuttle into court. Left-hand her has also been struggling with

:18:09. > :18:22.her low serve and that error is not helping her confidence.

:18:23. > :18:50.That is a very, very good rally. There was a moment there when the

:18:51. > :18:55.left-handed... There, how on earth did she get that back? The jihad to

:18:56. > :19:01.scamper to the other side on her forehand side. That was amazing

:19:02. > :19:05.court coverage. But that is the clear down the centre when they both

:19:06. > :19:10.hesitate. That is what I was saying about it, you would think they would

:19:11. > :19:14.get that sorted out, who is going for that centre on? That was a

:19:15. > :19:21.brilliant smash. Who should go for the centre on? Possibly the person

:19:22. > :19:27.who has got the forehand or either that or who is in a better position

:19:28. > :19:31.at the back of the court? But they have to communicate. That is the

:19:32. > :19:34.thing, communication. And you know they are good communicators, they

:19:35. > :19:38.talk a lot tactically about what they are doing on the court. But

:19:39. > :19:40.when it comes to the back of the court, that little shot, they have

:19:41. > :19:57.to be aware of it and call early. What an interception. From the

:19:58. > :20:02.left-hander. As you said, that is the beauty of having a left-hander

:20:03. > :20:06.and a right-hander on the court. That was quick. Yes. No wonder she

:20:07. > :20:16.is pleased with that. The Japanese pair definitely have

:20:17. > :20:23.problems against the other left and right-handed combination at the

:20:24. > :20:53.quarterfinal stage. The Malaysian pair.

:20:54. > :20:57.Did the strings go? No. It didn't sound right at all, maybe it was

:20:58. > :21:20.just a mis-hit. That attack down the middle, reduces

:21:21. > :22:11.the angle, brings in the net player. That was well wide. They are saying

:22:12. > :22:23.it was a double hit. The umpire... Let's have a look. Obviously, we

:22:24. > :22:32.didn't see it on the replay there. But there was some issue, if you are

:22:33. > :22:38.playing well, keep your focus. The tournament referee, deputy referee,

:22:39. > :22:45.of Belgium, he has some flashlights going on there.

:22:46. > :22:51.You are right, this is where the players need to keep their focus and

:22:52. > :22:58.take deep breaths. Focus on their game. The umpire just removing his

:22:59. > :23:01.microphones so we couldn't really hear what he was saying to one of

:23:02. > :23:12.the referees. It would be nice to know, though.

:23:13. > :23:17.Under the rules badminton, the umpire has to keep the spectators

:23:18. > :23:39.and and players informed of what is going on so if there is an issue...

:23:40. > :23:43.Here comes the deputy referee again. We are going to have a look at it

:23:44. > :23:51.now. What was the issue? I didn't see it.

:23:52. > :24:06.I can't see it either. Hang on. This is desperately disappointing,

:24:07. > :24:47.that we can't hear it. Perhaps the umpire called a fault

:24:48. > :24:52.and then let play go on. I am really bamboozled, I'm afraid. The

:24:53. > :25:05.indication of hearing something or someone heard something? Yes.

:25:06. > :25:08.Has that disturbed the focus and concentration of the European

:25:09. > :25:57.champions? Good aggression. But she just sensed

:25:58. > :26:08.the Japanese pair are beginning to settle and perhaps a couple of

:26:09. > :26:12.Airlie Birds. -- early nerves. You can't split the Japanese and the

:26:13. > :26:15.Danes at the moment, use the Red Button and the app and the sports

:26:16. > :26:29.website for more badminton. Time never asked to go sailing.

:26:30. > :26:34.Britain already have a medal. Look at it today, the wind is blowing and

:26:35. > :26:38.Rio have saved the best for this final day. Currently racing is the

:26:39. > :26:43.women's double handed class and in that class we have Hannah Mills and

:26:44. > :26:48.Saskia Clark and they were so good in their heats. They could finish

:26:49. > :26:53.last in this race and still win. They just have to you sail a clear

:26:54. > :26:58.race. It is the battle for silver and bronze. Our commentators Niall

:26:59. > :26:59.Myant and double silver-medallist Ian Walker will lead you through the

:27:00. > :27:12.final stages. Already in the closing stages of the

:27:13. > :27:15.medal race in Rio 2016. The great British pair of Saskia Clark and

:27:16. > :27:19.Hannah Mills at the back of the field at the moment. However, all

:27:20. > :27:22.they need to do is cross that finish line and they have already done

:27:23. > :27:29.enough, amassed more points than anyone else could challenge. The

:27:30. > :27:34.gold medal will be theirs. It is the function of the fantastic work put

:27:35. > :27:38.in by Hannah and Saskia over the last five days, that they are in

:27:39. > :27:43.this incredible position. Right now, things have not on their way. They

:27:44. > :27:48.are currently lying in ninth place which would give them 18 points. New

:27:49. > :27:52.Zealand are in fifth place with ten points. They still have a healthy

:27:53. > :27:56.margin in the gold medal position but the battle is really on for

:27:57. > :28:00.silver and bronze. It is boat the boat between the New Zealanders,

:28:01. > :28:05.Americans and the French, with the Japanese just two points behind.

:28:06. > :28:12.Slovenia out in the lead at the moment. Into the final stages of

:28:13. > :28:17.this downwind leg and that is a very impressive lead. Really just opened

:28:18. > :28:23.up in the early stages of this leg. Everything has been incredibly tight

:28:24. > :28:27.on Lap 1 in Rio. Now, Slovenia finding that little bit of extra

:28:28. > :28:32.speed. We are now on board with Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark. A

:28:33. > :28:37.chance to hear just how tight the crew work is, the communications are

:28:38. > :28:41.so important. Yes, great teamwork on board and they are known for being

:28:42. > :28:48.very fast downwind and look how they sail straight past.

:28:49. > :28:56.It is difficult for the New Zealanders. The other boats can

:28:57. > :29:00.affect the wind and tactics and so there is a lot going on in the

:29:01. > :29:06.middle of the pack. The New Zealand team. Gold-medallist from London

:29:07. > :29:14.2012, up to third in this race and that could see them with the silver

:29:15. > :29:18.medal. All the points from the opening series being added together

:29:19. > :29:23.with the final positions from this race. Double points for this final

:29:24. > :29:29.race. The silver medal will be decided between New Zealand, United

:29:30. > :29:35.States, France, Japan and the Netherlands. The leaders of 100

:29:36. > :29:48.metres to go. The last turning mark for the Slovenian pair.

:29:49. > :29:56.Macarol and Mrak. They had two disqualifications in the qualifying

:29:57. > :29:59.series and without one of those, they have a string of results easily

:30:00. > :30:06.good enough to see them in silver medal position. They cannot win a

:30:07. > :30:11.medal today. But right behind the battle is on for silver and bronze.

:30:12. > :30:15.Around the bottom of the course for the last time. Slovenia in the lead

:30:16. > :30:26.in the 470 medal race. And now the field is closing down to

:30:27. > :30:35.that Reg turning mark. Netherlands leading New Zealand. New Zealand

:30:36. > :30:41.rounding the bottom of the course in third place. The points for silver

:30:42. > :30:46.are very close. Looking good for New Zealand. In the lead, Slovenia,

:30:47. > :30:54.crossing the finishing line. Second Olympics for Mrak Slovenia at the

:30:55. > :31:06.helm. First time here at the Olympics for Macarol. Winning the

:31:07. > :31:12.race in the 470 class. New Zealand coming to the line with Brazil just

:31:13. > :31:15.behind. Big work aboard the Netherlands boat as they cross the

:31:16. > :31:21.line. The New Zealand pair are happy with their performance and the Wii

:31:22. > :31:27.points will go their way. Across just ahead of Brazil. Poland finish

:31:28. > :31:36.behind them. Then France. Very tight behind. Japan cross the line. Hannah

:31:37. > :31:42.Mills and Saskia Clark, silver medal winners in London 2012 and now, as

:31:43. > :31:45.they cross the finishing line, bringing their Rio campaign to a

:31:46. > :31:52.close, it is a gold medal for Great Britain. Let me tell you that is

:31:53. > :31:57.apparently well-deserved. They have worked tirelessly since the silver

:31:58. > :32:03.medal in London 2012. They are a fantastic team and have brilliant

:32:04. > :32:11.coach, and they have eliminated their weaknesses and it has come to

:32:12. > :32:14.fruition here. The pair from the United States cross the finishing

:32:15. > :32:21.line and you can see the disappointment in their face. They

:32:22. > :32:25.were leading this race. They had the silver medal within their grasp. But

:32:26. > :32:31.slipping back to the field, that will see them slipping off the

:32:32. > :32:36.podium. It all came down to one decision at the bottom gate when

:32:37. > :32:40.they went to the left. That will not matter to Hannah and Saskia Clark.

:32:41. > :32:47.It is tears of joy on the British boat. Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark

:32:48. > :32:51.of Great Britain take the gold in the women's to Person dinghy. The

:32:52. > :32:54.New Zealand pair take the silver. And France take the bronze. -- two

:32:55. > :33:07.person dinghy. What a moment this is for the

:33:08. > :33:11.British pair. Here they are, Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark, 2016

:33:12. > :33:17.gold-medallists. They have waited a long time for this moment. Silver in

:33:18. > :33:21.London, cross with themselves for letting that gold medal slip away

:33:22. > :33:27.but four years later, no chance of that. A great gold medal, very

:33:28. > :33:34.well-deserved. Massive smiles on board. Desperately trying to get the

:33:35. > :33:36.Union Jack. They want to celebrate this moment. It has been a long time

:33:37. > :33:53.coming. They are surrounded by

:33:54. > :34:00.photographers. What a moment this is. They almost won this medal two

:34:01. > :34:04.days ago, but were reluctant to celebrate, reluctant to celebrate

:34:05. > :34:11.until, finally, nothing would stand in their way, the gold would be

:34:12. > :34:17.theirs. Saskia Clark, this is her third Olympic Games. What a moment.

:34:18. > :34:23.Such a tight power, the best of friends. They have shared every day

:34:24. > :34:27.together the last six years. To share this moment is something else.

:34:28. > :34:36.They are surrounded by cameras and photographers. There is nowhere for

:34:37. > :34:40.them to go. This is a nice moment. They are with their coach, Joe

:34:41. > :34:48.Glenfield. A double silver-medallist in his own right. What a special

:34:49. > :34:59.moment. He has shared the last six years with the gold medal pair.

:35:00. > :35:03.LAUGHTER. We will try to get in for a chat in

:35:04. > :35:14.a bit, but this moment is so welcome. Hannah Mills, from Wales,

:35:15. > :35:21.Saskia Clark from Essex. They are the perfect Gavin Stacey of the

:35:22. > :35:26.sailing world. Massive smiles. Helicopters, photographers, they are

:35:27. > :35:33.here together at this moment. I am not sure they actually know where to

:35:34. > :35:35.go and what to do. They are being chased by about 30 motorboats, all

:35:36. > :35:53.after that winning moment. We can go back for reaction.

:35:54. > :35:57.Well, a fantastic race for the women's two person dinghy and it

:35:58. > :36:01.came down to the final reach and celebrations for Hannah Mills and

:36:02. > :36:07.Saskia Clark, but also the New Zealand pair doing what needed to be

:36:08. > :36:17.done in the final moment and bronze for the French pair. One thing you

:36:18. > :36:23.see at the Olympics is the contrasting emotions between being

:36:24. > :36:30.in the top three and forth. We have to feel for the American team that

:36:31. > :36:40.slipped to fifth position. Confirmation on your screen.

:36:41. > :36:45.Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark of Great Britain, we have seen this

:36:46. > :36:52.occasionally in some of the other classes. They have sailed over the

:36:53. > :36:58.line of yellow buoys that separate the action from the beach. They are

:36:59. > :37:03.coming into the beach in front of the spectators' enclosure. They are

:37:04. > :37:08.coming right inside. Jumping off the boat. Nobody left on board. They are

:37:09. > :37:15.determined to celebrate this moment with their friends and families on

:37:16. > :37:19.the shore. Wonderful scenes and a very well-deserved indeed. I think

:37:20. > :37:26.Hannah once her mum to come on board and then they want to go for a sale!

:37:27. > :37:30.The friends and family, spectators and supporters, they are running

:37:31. > :37:34.into the waters here. Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark of Great Britain,

:37:35. > :37:36.they had their silver medal in London, now they have a gold medal

:37:37. > :37:50.in Rio, and what a special moment. The pictures are really telling the

:37:51. > :37:54.story. Behind every Olympic champion there is normally an incredible

:37:55. > :38:00.support network. When Hannah started sailing, as a young lady, coached by

:38:01. > :38:04.Alan Williams for many years, she was clearly a star in the making.

:38:05. > :38:10.Who would have thought it would lead to an Olympic gold medal in Rio in

:38:11. > :38:16.2016? Incredible scenes on the beach in

:38:17. > :38:22.Guanabara Bay. The great British team of Hannah Mills and Saskia

:38:23. > :38:27.Clark came into Rio 2016 ranked fourth in the world. But an

:38:28. > :38:35.incredible performance in the opening series. Three firsts on

:38:36. > :38:40.their scorecard. They had all but sealed the gold medal. The only

:38:41. > :38:45.thing required of them today was to cross the finishing line. Finally,

:38:46. > :38:50.the emotion is set free. Huge scenes of joy on the beach for Hannah Mills

:38:51. > :38:55.and Saskia Clark, celebrating with friends and family. I have a

:38:56. > :39:03.sneaking suspicion they will all end up in the sea! Hannah and Saskia

:39:04. > :39:06.Clark are dressed for it. This is not the normal protocol. You can see

:39:07. > :39:10.yellow marks in the middle of the picture, that is meant to keep the

:39:11. > :39:17.sailors and their boat away from the beach. However, Hannah Mills and

:39:18. > :39:21.Saskia Clark have sailed right over the boundary line. They have come

:39:22. > :39:28.straight onto the beach. They have just been wrapped in the arms of

:39:29. > :39:32.friends and family here. Of course, this moment should have been

:39:33. > :39:37.yesterday. We had the chance to get the racing concluded. They had to

:39:38. > :39:44.wait one more day and as they took to the water this morning, they did

:39:45. > :39:48.not look too confident, however everything going their way. They did

:39:49. > :39:52.not let their emotion get the better of them but as soon as they crossed

:39:53. > :39:57.the finishing line, suddenly it pours out. As I say, it is

:39:58. > :40:02.difficult, when you know you have won and you have the formality of

:40:03. > :40:06.the race, you do not sale in the same manner. The difference between

:40:07. > :40:11.winning and losing is tiny. I do not think we saw the best of them in

:40:12. > :40:16.that race. They will not care about that and I certainly do not care

:40:17. > :40:20.about that. A winning performance from a fantastic team and they will

:40:21. > :40:25.soon be able to celebrate on the Olympic podium. Moving on to the

:40:26. > :40:30.men's event in the 470. The two-handed stinky. This is the

:40:31. > :40:36.course as we saw in the previous race. Down to the gate at the bottom

:40:37. > :40:45.and one more lap for the reach to the finish. Amazing scenes already

:40:46. > :40:51.out on the water in Guanabara Bay. It has been an emotional journey for

:40:52. > :40:54.Great Britain. Now is the turn of either Croatia, Greece, or

:40:55. > :41:01.Australia, as we take to the waters to bring you men's double handed

:41:02. > :41:18.Dinky 470 class. The breeze is still very strong at the moment.

:41:19. > :41:24.That is quite the celebration sailing up the beach. Huge

:41:25. > :41:31.congratulations, gold-medallist is in Rio 2016 and the biggest smile.

:41:32. > :41:35.It is absolutely awesome! We had a massive lead but we still had to

:41:36. > :41:39.raise today and you are still nervous. Something could have

:41:40. > :41:46.happened random. It was not a pretty race, but we did it. Two days ago,

:41:47. > :41:49.you were nearly there but so reluctant to celebrate until this

:41:50. > :41:57.moment, to share this together after so long, what is it like? Don't go

:41:58. > :42:01.to far-away! I cannot speak. Amazing, we have had an amazing

:42:02. > :42:04.journey, six years sailing together and I have loved every second,

:42:05. > :42:10.Saskia is the best person ever, I love her. And we get the national

:42:11. > :42:16.anthem, the best thing ever! I cannot wait! I do not think there

:42:17. > :42:22.will be a dry eye, to stand with your best friend will be something

:42:23. > :42:31.else. Congratulations. 2016 Olympics champions. Amazing. Thank you!

:42:32. > :42:37.STUDIO: Incredible. A fantastic effort from Shirley to get the

:42:38. > :42:41.interview. Not easy to get two boats back to what a sterling effort from

:42:42. > :42:45.Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark winning that gold medal. Possibly

:42:46. > :42:50.the best celebratory scenes I have seen. The family getting involved.

:42:51. > :42:54.Breaking the sailing rules. They don't care, they had to wait a day

:42:55. > :43:01.to pick up the gold medal, they had to wait since 2012 when they won a

:43:02. > :43:08.silver medal. Different scenes there as it is in Weymouth, and I can say

:43:09. > :43:13.that because I am from Dorset. Another golden moment brought to you

:43:14. > :43:20.live on BBC Four. What a pleasure it was. We are going

:43:21. > :43:25.to talk cycling. After the six gold medals, five I should say, won

:43:26. > :43:28.bright Great Britain in the Velodrome, there is another chance

:43:29. > :43:34.for Great Britain's Liam Phillips. It will not be here, it is in the

:43:35. > :43:39.Deodoro. Liam Phillips is a real hope. He was at London 2012 and the

:43:40. > :43:45.result did not go the way he wanted it to go. 2013 world champion. This

:43:46. > :43:55.year has not gone his way. Missing out on the final in 2016, said now

:43:56. > :44:00.is the time for Liam to go for gold. We are here to meet Liam Phillips,

:44:01. > :44:04.one of the big hopes for medal in Rio and rather than have a straight

:44:05. > :44:05.chat, we thought we would make it a tiny bit more interesting. Let's do

:44:06. > :44:17.this. What's going on here? The big man

:44:18. > :44:27.has turned up. Would you like to see what I have got? Why not.

:44:28. > :44:35.LAUGHTER Nice to meet you. What do you think?

:44:36. > :44:41.Not bad. I'm not sure about Rio, maybe Tokyo? Surely no one is ever

:44:42. > :44:58.gone that fast with a two tone bike! You put every bit of effort in that

:44:59. > :45:07.the people like Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill put in to make sure you

:45:08. > :45:15.are ready. Beat that, Wiggins! Exactly! We go from zero to 65

:45:16. > :45:19.kilometres, over 2500 watts at over 200 rpm so the guys involved with

:45:20. > :45:22.cycling now will think I am making those numbers up because they really

:45:23. > :45:26.are right at the top end of what is achievable. I think I was hitting a

:45:27. > :45:35.few of those numbers on the home straight! LAUGHTER

:45:36. > :45:41.Close! Big pedal now. I'm very much taking this all in my stride. Most

:45:42. > :45:45.of the athletes we spoke to, major concerns are injuries. You have that

:45:46. > :45:51.the content with and also the fact your sport is a complete lottery. I

:45:52. > :45:56.know it is part and parcel of the sport. I broke my collarbone in

:45:57. > :46:01.December right here. For me, it is not the be all and end all. It was

:46:02. > :46:06.just another broken collarbone, it really is part of the sport we do.

:46:07. > :46:11.You always strike me as very laid back and take everything in your

:46:12. > :46:18.stride. How do you approach an Olympic year? I have said numerous

:46:19. > :46:24.times that for me, it is just another year but the difficulty with

:46:25. > :46:32.Olympic year, that is the last race of the season. I wanted to get to

:46:33. > :46:35.this stage and I wanted to be going to Rio in one piece and that is

:46:36. > :46:41.something I wasn't able to do in London. Jimenez as found his way

:46:42. > :46:45.back. Liam Phillips has fell! The thing that taught me a lot about the

:46:46. > :46:50.Olympics as a whole and I feel like I'm in a very different place going

:46:51. > :46:56.to Rio. I'm going to win. If I go there, I perform well and I enjoy

:46:57. > :47:03.what I'm doing. I should be successful if I do that. Dan looks

:47:04. > :47:07.good in the BMX getup! I don't know if he would have gone up again like

:47:08. > :47:14.Liam Phillips has done considering how many bones he has broken. He is

:47:15. > :47:18.ready to go in Rio. Before we get to the action in Deodoro, here is your

:47:19. > :47:32.BMX guide, Dan Walker. Keep watching. Bicycle motocross or BMX

:47:33. > :47:36.as it is commonly known is one of the newest Olympic sports, making

:47:37. > :47:42.its debut in Beijing in 2008. Competition is held on a circuit

:47:43. > :47:46.between 3005400 metres. Races lasting approximately 40 seconds.

:47:47. > :47:51.The riders start on an eight-metre high ramp and wants the race is

:47:52. > :47:56.underway, they have to jump, go around corners and other obstacles

:47:57. > :48:00.before reaching the finish line. In BMX, collisions happen regularly so

:48:01. > :48:04.it is crucial to try to avoid other riders during a race. The best way

:48:05. > :48:08.to do this is to make a quick start possible and lead going into the

:48:09. > :48:12.first turn. The leader normally controls the race but the rest of

:48:13. > :48:16.the competitors chasing a working hard to catch up. Because a BMX

:48:17. > :48:20.track features numerous bumps, there are some key skills riders need to

:48:21. > :48:25.master, including being able to manual. This is when a rider lifts

:48:26. > :48:31.the front wheel to move faster over rolling sections of the course.

:48:32. > :48:35.Pumping is when a rider creates speed through the rhythmical

:48:36. > :48:40.movement of body weight. When pumping, arms and legs are used as

:48:41. > :48:44.shock absorbers and it produces power and speed. Riders move their

:48:45. > :48:50.body weight from the front to the back of the bike without pedalling.

:48:51. > :48:56.Both men and women's finals are races so whoever finishes the finish

:48:57. > :49:00.line first is crowned champion. It is quarterfinal time for Liam

:49:01. > :49:03.Phillips. We are going to watch him in his first run of heat two and

:49:04. > :49:06.taking us through all the twists and turns, Chris Hoy and Simon

:49:07. > :49:21.Brotherton. The first race in the Olympics in

:49:22. > :49:27.Rio for Liam Phillips. And away they go. Switzerland rider with the

:49:28. > :49:31.inside line. Good start from Phillips. Over the triples they go,

:49:32. > :49:37.into turn one, Liam Phillips forced out wide by Graf. Phillips has gone

:49:38. > :49:44.down, he has crashed on his first run. Three riders taking out and now

:49:45. > :49:48.the field immediately down to five. Night hawk from Canada is racing

:49:49. > :49:52.away from this one. He's been followed all the way down the

:49:53. > :50:08.penultimate straights by the remnants of the field but it is the

:50:09. > :50:15.easiest victory night -- Nyhaug tower. A disastrous start to his

:50:16. > :50:19.Olympic campaign here. For Britain's Liam Phillips and the worry has to

:50:20. > :50:27.be whether that Olympic campaign has already come to an end. A heavy fall

:50:28. > :50:32.leads Liam Phillips of Great Britain still on the floor off the side of

:50:33. > :50:37.the track. Three big names in that track all coming down and they

:50:38. > :50:42.clearly had a big one. Graf barely able to walk onto the track and Liam

:50:43. > :50:47.is still lying on the side. This is worrying. A heavy fall onto his

:50:48. > :50:53.side. Basically came to a complete stop at about 40 miles an hour.

:50:54. > :50:59.Maris Strombergs rolls over the line, at least he is in one piece.

:51:00. > :51:04.Shaken and stirred but still on two wheels and Strombergs is over the

:51:05. > :51:09.line. He's shaking his head. But he at least will be able to continue in

:51:10. > :51:14.this competition. But Graf looked like he was quite badly hurt but he

:51:15. > :51:16.is at least up and about. Unfortunately, Liam Phillips is

:51:17. > :51:23.still on the ground and being attended to. Liam has not had a

:51:24. > :51:27.great deal of good luck this season. A list of injuries, most recently

:51:28. > :51:32.his broken collarbone. Let's hope it is not the same side. It looks at

:51:33. > :51:37.the stretchers are coming out. There is Graf who is at least able to get

:51:38. > :51:43.back on his bike. And he will complete the course. Be it a couple

:51:44. > :51:50.of minutes or so after everyone else. Here it is once again. He made

:51:51. > :51:56.a great start. They kept the line. It was the exit here. All three

:51:57. > :52:00.hitting this jump and Liam coming into contact with Graf. It has taken

:52:01. > :52:06.out Strombergs as well. A really heavy impact. I think Liam Phillips

:52:07. > :52:14.was pushed wide by Graf. There was nowhere for either of them to go.

:52:15. > :52:20.That was heavily on both riders. Right on the outside. And he got the

:52:21. > :52:25.impact as Strombergs came in there as well. That looked pretty grim.

:52:26. > :52:30.Strombergs was the rider who had nothing to -- nowhere to go. Liam

:52:31. > :52:34.Phillips is back on his feet which is good to see, gingerly walking

:52:35. > :52:39.towards the near side. That was a very nasty moment. Not that long

:52:40. > :52:42.between the first and second run of the quarterfinal so if he is to make

:52:43. > :52:58.it back on the bike... Doesn't look that great from this position. Here

:52:59. > :53:03.is that confirmation of the quarterfinal. Liam Phillips not able

:53:04. > :53:04.to complete the run. His Olympics isn't over yet. Those concerns will

:53:05. > :53:14.be over his health. It was great to see him able to get

:53:15. > :53:19.up and walk with the medical staff. The medical staff are fantastic. The

:53:20. > :53:22.British team doctors will be with him and giving him every chance to

:53:23. > :53:26.get back on the bike and take part in his second run if at all

:53:27. > :53:32.possible. Liam Phillips is rock hard. He broke his collarbone about

:53:33. > :53:35.five or six weeks ago and he came down very heavily. They are

:53:36. > :53:39.assessing him and seeing if he is able to carry on in this competition

:53:40. > :53:43.because it will be bitterly disappointing if this is the end of

:53:44. > :53:48.his Olympics. He has worked so hard to get here but that is the danger

:53:49. > :53:52.of BMX racing. You will get eight points for that run he did not

:53:53. > :53:57.complete so he is on the back foot but if we did another two excellent

:53:58. > :54:02.runs, you could make it into the semifinals.

:54:03. > :54:09.What about the other guys? We saw Maris Strombergs just running

:54:10. > :54:13.through. It is an aggregate score. Some of the big guns looking like

:54:14. > :54:18.they will have to do with the hard way, if at all. That's right, that

:54:19. > :54:22.is the nature of this race. So important to be in a good position.

:54:23. > :54:26.Liam Phillips was in one but Graf seem to ride up against him onto the

:54:27. > :54:31.side and that is where the accident happened. I think we will get the

:54:32. > :54:39.next run under way but let's see the first heat. This featuring the world

:54:40. > :54:47.champion, the French man. Sir Chris Hoy and Simon Brotherton.

:54:48. > :54:55.We're getting ready for this heat number two. We are waiting to see if

:54:56. > :55:02.Liam Phillips can take his place. The riders prepare for their second

:55:03. > :55:07.run. Very dramatic opening series with some big names hitting the

:55:08. > :55:12.debt. Very dramatic. It is the nature of the sport. This is the one

:55:13. > :55:17.they want to win, it is Olympic Games and everything is on the line.

:55:18. > :55:20.They are so close together, just a slight touch, even a self-inflicted

:55:21. > :55:24.mistake, as we saw there with the Dutch rider going off the ground at

:55:25. > :55:29.the first corner, and there was a huge crash. They put everything on

:55:30. > :55:33.the line. It is incredibly fast but let's keep our fingers crossed there

:55:34. > :55:37.are no more accidents. I wonder if the weather conditions are a factor.

:55:38. > :55:41.You have two things going on, going into the first turn, over the

:55:42. > :55:46.triples, everyone wants to be on the front so there is that desperation,

:55:47. > :55:52.but also the way the wind is blowing, slight crossed tale, it is

:55:53. > :55:55.not helping. The wind was in a completely opposite direction

:55:56. > :55:59.yesterday. The first straight, they were heading dead on into it, much

:56:00. > :56:05.easier to control. Now they are overshooting the jumps. It is

:56:06. > :56:12.clearly causing them problems. Niklas Laustsen from Denmark.

:56:13. > :56:22.Qualified 24th of the 32 riders. This is an excellent field in this

:56:23. > :56:26.particular heat. Rider number 279, Trent Jones from New Zealand,

:56:27. > :56:33.performed very well in that first run, getting third place. I think

:56:34. > :56:37.there is surprised in the first heat, the bronze-medallist at the

:56:38. > :56:42.start of the year and Mick Kinane who have a lot of work to do. It

:56:43. > :56:46.will be tight and you can see any one of those top five guys winning

:56:47. > :56:53.this heat. Treimanis crashed yesterday. Nick Kimmann, the

:56:54. > :57:01.youngster from the Netherlands who was just 19 when he lifted the world

:57:02. > :57:05.crown. Brazilian rider, Renato Rezende. 2014 South American games

:57:06. > :57:21.champion. The crowd are loving this. Getting

:57:22. > :57:27.behind their home man. There is nick long -- Nicholas Long.

:57:28. > :57:36.Bronze-medallist in the Pan-American games last year, to go without world

:57:37. > :57:41.bronze. The world champion, Joris Daudet. He looked impressive in the

:57:42. > :57:48.first run. Very classy and smooth rider. Certainly looked in control.

:57:49. > :57:58.Jelle van Gorkom, the other rider from the Netherlands in this heat.

:57:59. > :57:59.Crossed the line in first place on the first run. They are up against

:58:00. > :58:10.the gate. Find a few moments before the second

:58:11. > :58:19.run of three. Quarterfinals of the BMX.

:58:20. > :58:27.Van Gorkom on the near side. Daudet on the other side. Will they all get

:58:28. > :58:36.round safely? Daudet leading the way. Daudet has a little bit of

:58:37. > :58:43.space. Van Gorkom staying in second place. Kimmann coming on strong and

:58:44. > :58:47.moving into third. Joris Daudet, the world champion has gone down and

:58:48. > :58:51.fallen really heavily. It is Van Gorkom now followed by the rider

:58:52. > :58:59.from New Zealand Trent Jones and rider number five coming round,

:59:00. > :59:06.Treimanis of Latvia. Netherlands, New Zealand, the first two over the

:59:07. > :59:12.line. It is a bad, bad run and a bad moment for Joris Daudet of France

:59:13. > :59:15.and varies Niek Kimmann, last year's world champion, who was walking

:59:16. > :59:21.along the track with half his bike missing. Here comes the Brazilian

:59:22. > :59:31.rider as well. Unfortunately, the world champion is down. And he had a

:59:32. > :59:35.long way to fall. He just lost it before that job and he slammed

:59:36. > :59:40.straight into the second half of those huge set of doubles. That is

:59:41. > :59:46.tarmac, not do it, it will be a big impact. He is sitting across, trying

:59:47. > :59:52.to catch his breath. Here comes Kimmann with his bike snapped,

:59:53. > :59:55.showing the impact of landing on that crash. But he is crossing the

:59:56. > :00:13.line, he is going to finish. We are here in Great Britain's Liam

:00:14. > :00:17.Phillips is out of the Olympic Games.

:00:18. > :00:23.Rezende day he's got so much into this to get fit after the crash he

:00:24. > :00:32.had six weeks ago, to come all this way. There is the world champion,

:00:33. > :00:37.Daudet, upon his feet. So many of the big names having issues today,

:00:38. > :00:43.serious crashes. Seems like maybe his wrist is his biggest problem.

:00:44. > :00:49.Not looking good for him. Not looking good at all. They'll add

:00:50. > :00:53.another couple of points because he walked across the track and hasn't

:00:54. > :00:57.completed the course. His biggest concern is to... There he goes. He

:00:58. > :01:02.basically had to bail out on the first. That is a big impact right on

:01:03. > :01:09.the lip of the second backside of the doubles. Bug had lost his

:01:10. > :01:16.momentum, tries to bail out of the jump, Kimmann landing on his left

:01:17. > :01:22.shoulder. Treimanis did a great job to stay upright and avoid that.

:01:23. > :01:29.Incredible instincts. Spectacular angle. There is Daudet, there is

:01:30. > :01:34.Kimmann, two of the biggest names in the sport. Daudet and Kimmann, first

:01:35. > :01:41.and second in the World Championship this year, both falling very, very

:01:42. > :01:46.heavily in this quarterfinal. It'll be interesting to see the run-up to

:01:47. > :01:49.that jump to see why Daudet bailed out of the jump, why he didn't have

:01:50. > :01:57.speed and momentum to clear it in the first place. There's a gap where

:01:58. > :02:04.Liam Phillips should be in this quarterfinal heat. If you just

:02:05. > :02:09.joined our coverage, he fell heavily, three riders fell. Liam

:02:10. > :02:21.Phillips was one of them. Sadly not able to take any further part in

:02:22. > :02:33.these Olympic Games. There is the South African, died, the continental

:02:34. > :02:47.champion of Africa. -- the South African, Dodd. Syarifudin from

:02:48. > :02:51.Indonesia. And here, Strombergs, the two time Olympic champion, he fell

:02:52. > :03:01.in the first race, he looks OK and is at least able to start. As is

:03:02. > :03:13.David Graf from Switzerland, heavy fall, but back on his bike and

:03:14. > :03:20.raring to go. Brethauer from Germany, world bronze medallist

:03:21. > :03:24.three years ago. Jefferson Milano from Venezuela. Couldn't quite

:03:25. > :03:26.believe he finished third in a heat that contains so many big names.

:03:27. > :03:48.Incredible. Tory Nyhaug from Canada. The gap in

:03:49. > :03:49.the field is because Liam Phillips is out of the competition through

:03:50. > :04:06.injury. Here we go, race two. Nyhaug with the inside line, but

:04:07. > :04:12.it's Jefferson Milano slightly ahead of him. In... Goes over the triples

:04:13. > :04:16.in first place, everybody around in one piece. We'll take that at this

:04:17. > :04:22.stage. Brethauer is challenging Milano for second place. Still

:04:23. > :04:28.everybody up on their bikes. There is a crash and Graf has gone down,

:04:29. > :04:33.taking the South African down. The Canadian leads the way. Brethauer

:04:34. > :04:39.Germany is there. Another crash on the third straight, as three riders

:04:40. > :04:46.crossed the line. Canada, Germany and Venezuela, the latest rider to

:04:47. > :04:51.crash is Syarifudin of Indonesia, but there was a bigger crash before

:04:52. > :04:55.that and Graf of Switzerland has fallen in both races so far. He

:04:56. > :05:00.looked so good yesterday in that seeding run. Great form coming into

:05:01. > :05:07.real, but two crashes from two starts so far. That will be him out

:05:08. > :05:10.of the games even if he wins the final heat, it won't be enough for

:05:11. > :05:14.him to progress, it'll be heartbreak for him. He's counting every

:05:15. > :05:19.position just in case but it's still not going to be enough. Got taken

:05:20. > :05:23.out, it's a shame, he was holding his line. Look at the replay, might

:05:24. > :05:30.have been the German. Dodd of South Africa involved in that. There is

:05:31. > :05:33.confirmation of the result. Nyhaug of Canada first over the line. It

:05:34. > :05:38.certainly didn't know how we thought it was going to over the first two

:05:39. > :05:43.runs. Nyhaug on the inside here, the Venezuelan on his hip. Nice and

:05:44. > :05:47.smooth over the first straight, first jump, overshot a little bit.

:05:48. > :05:53.The tailwind causing all sorts of problems. But here we go, after this

:05:54. > :06:00.jump, going into this corner. Watch Graf. It was Graf's fault he made

:06:01. > :06:07.the move on the inside, hit the German, German held his line. Yeah,

:06:08. > :06:11.caught his arm, turned the bar, lifted off the ground and he was

:06:12. > :06:16.down. Heavy blow to the head as he fell. There is no give in that

:06:17. > :06:20.service. It's almost like tarmac with a really grippy nonslip

:06:21. > :06:29.surface, if you fall there you're going to notice it. They're rather

:06:30. > :06:33.standings after the first two runs. The Canadians are going to be happy

:06:34. > :06:36.with that. Staying out of trouble, getting to the front, avoiding the

:06:37. > :06:51.carnage behind. That's what you have to do here. Strombergs fifth, the

:06:52. > :06:55.defending champion. Still all to play for. He'll have to be first or

:06:56. > :07:02.second to guarantee a place in the semifinal. You can't look beyond the

:07:03. > :07:08.Canadian in that heat, he seems pretty smooth and confident at this

:07:09. > :07:15.stage. We go straight again to heat four, heat three next. It's gone

:07:16. > :07:20.slightly out of order. There is Turner from Australia, the

:07:21. > :07:27.21-year-old. Two Australians in this one. The 6th of April riders over

:07:28. > :07:37.the line. Kyle Evans from Great Britain, 22-year-old from Wigan.

:07:38. > :07:46.Fifth going into race two. Corben Sharrah from the United States.

:07:47. > :07:59.Anthony Dean, second at the moment. Seventh actually. In May. At the

:08:00. > :08:10.last big meeting before this. Molina from Argentina. Who scored well in

:08:11. > :08:17.the first right. Fields from Las Vegas, who has to be in contention

:08:18. > :08:20.for gold. Fields and business macro looking the smoothest and most

:08:21. > :08:22.confident, it's the commentators curse, we'll see if it has an effect

:08:23. > :08:38.on this. Away they go. Connor Fields nearest

:08:39. > :08:41.the camera but towards the back of the field. A good start by one of

:08:42. > :08:46.the Australian riders. Molina going well for Argentina on the inside.

:08:47. > :08:52.Everybody through turn one in good shape. Australia, Argentina, and

:08:53. > :08:59.Corben Sharrah is bird at the moment. Navrestad from Norway in

:09:00. > :09:03.fourth place. Connor Fields has a lot to do but she is gaining ground.

:09:04. > :09:09.Into the final turn, as they come towards the finish, Anthony Dean

:09:10. > :09:13.riding really well for Australia. Dean, Molina, the first over the

:09:14. > :09:20.line, then Corben Sharrah, then Connor Fields. Fields had a terrible

:09:21. > :09:23.start, not the result he would want, but fourth place is still

:09:24. > :09:27.consistent, he's in contention to get through in the final wife. Cadel

:09:28. > :09:33.Evans back in seventh won't be happy with that. It was tough, but Anthony

:09:34. > :09:36.Dean upfront controlled the race. Who would have thought it, we've

:09:37. > :09:42.just seen a race where everybody finished. Yeah, we can breathe a

:09:43. > :09:48.sigh of relief. Kyle Evans towards the middle of your picture. He had a

:09:49. > :09:55.good start, he was in the mix, got a little bit pushed out of it.

:09:56. > :10:04.Unspectacular angles. A visually stunning event. Spectacular. If a

:10:05. > :10:08.bruising one. It's a fantastic sport, requires extreme athletic

:10:09. > :10:14.ability, nerve, skill, so much respect for these athletes. Dean's

:10:15. > :10:19.going very well, the Australian rider. Fourth in the World

:10:20. > :10:24.Championship four years ago. Has written extremely well in both of

:10:25. > :10:48.those first two runs. -- he has ridden.

:10:49. > :11:02.We go back to heat three. This is the final run. Of the quarterfinals,

:11:03. > :11:10.the final heat, I should say. Race number two. Twan van Gendt from the

:11:11. > :11:25.Netherlands. Six in Argentina earlier in the year. The Russian

:11:26. > :11:30.rider, Evgeny Komarov. Jeremy missed out on a medal in the World

:11:31. > :11:37.Championship in Colombia. Two Colombian riders. Oquendo. And

:11:38. > :11:51.Ramirez. Sam Willoughby from Australia, world

:11:52. > :12:08.champion in 2012 and 2014. Not sure what the problem is here.

:12:09. > :12:13.Twan van Gendt from the Netherlands has a bit of an issue. Whether he

:12:14. > :12:20.has the time to sort it out I'm not too sure, the officials looking at

:12:21. > :12:29.the watch. Some problem with his bike, is it? Is asking to go back

:12:30. > :12:38.down. He's having to disappear very quickly, I'm not sure they will wait

:12:39. > :12:43.for him very long. A bit of drama before the race has even started.

:12:44. > :12:50.Must be something to do with his shoe. The issues are attached to the

:12:51. > :12:58.pedals, it helps temple upon the pedals. This looks like his has

:12:59. > :13:03.slipped or hasn't tightened up. Not the ideal start. Not the best

:13:04. > :13:06.preparation. Shouldn't be having to deal with that at this point. It'll

:13:07. > :13:12.get the adrenaline pumping, that's for sure. It affects the other guys

:13:13. > :13:21.at the start gate, they have to sit there are a bit longer. Not ideal

:13:22. > :13:29.for anyone. He's OK now. Twan van Gendt from the Netherlands OK and

:13:30. > :13:34.raring to go. Plenty of Colombians in the crowd, plenty of fans to

:13:35. > :13:48.cheer on these two riders here. Eight metres up in the air.

:13:49. > :13:54.Sam Willoughby on the inside for Australia has made an excellent

:13:55. > :13:59.start, Twan van Gendt has made an excellent start as well, followed by

:14:00. > :14:09.the Colombian riders. Rencurel forced wide. Willoughby first place,

:14:10. > :14:14.Twan van Gendt in second. Willoughby through the rhythm section, chased

:14:15. > :14:20.all the way by Twan van Gendt from the Netherlands. Rencurel hasn't

:14:21. > :14:28.made any inroads into finishing in third, in the end that third-place

:14:29. > :14:33.is taken by Carlos Oquendo from Colombia. But Sam Willoughby got out

:14:34. > :14:37.of the gate very well and never looked back. Flawless performance

:14:38. > :14:43.from Willoughby, nicely controlled, nice and smooth. 35.1. So far he's

:14:44. > :14:48.been the most consistent performer. That's what it's about, just getting

:14:49. > :14:54.through without any trouble, no drama, dealing with nerves at the

:14:55. > :14:58.start. Getting a snap in lane one, so important to get a clean start,

:14:59. > :15:07.you saw the Colombian with a slight hesitation. Manoeuvring the bike to

:15:08. > :15:13.try and get it smooth as possible on landing to maintain that momentum.

:15:14. > :15:18.Little bit of a shoulder in their from the Colombian. Thankfully

:15:19. > :15:22.everybody stayed upright. At this point in the second straight,

:15:23. > :15:26.getting the win from their left-hand side, across into their face. It's

:15:27. > :15:30.very difficult for those big jumps, to control the bikes, when the wind

:15:31. > :15:35.is this strong. You may be able to hear the wind rattling around the

:15:36. > :15:37.commentary position here. Be quite a major issue, an additional factor

:15:38. > :15:43.for the riders to have to think about here. Sam will be looking good

:15:44. > :15:47.for Australia so far in these quarterfinals. -- Sam Willoughby.

:15:48. > :15:52.We've had the second run, just the third and final one to come. You can

:15:53. > :15:53.see how stiff breeze is from the flags beyond the back row of the

:15:54. > :16:11.crowd. Sam Willoughby is true. 12 point is

:16:12. > :16:19.a magic number to get through. That would guarantee you qualification.

:16:20. > :16:22.The crowd are loving this as well. Very impressive. Lots of South

:16:23. > :16:34.American support, as you would expect. Certainly on the female side

:16:35. > :16:36.of the sport, Mariana Pajon is a superstar and Colombia, and there

:16:37. > :16:41.will be lots of Colombian DMX fancier tomorrow cheering her on.

:16:42. > :16:48.The woman semifinals and finals tomorrow, the men's semifinals and

:16:49. > :16:54.finals as well. There are plenty of riders who have been patched up and

:16:55. > :17:03.are tending to their wounds, including the world champion, Joris

:17:04. > :17:07.Daudet. You don't want to see competitors ending their Olympic

:17:08. > :17:10.campaign in the back of an ambulance, getting the thumbs down

:17:11. > :17:17.from the medics, exercise way to see it go, so it is great to see a real

:17:18. > :17:22.champion like Daudet fighting to the end. We will have the third and

:17:23. > :17:53.final run-in the heats for the men's quarterfinals here at the BMX.

:17:54. > :18:01.Some of the highlights from the quarterfinals and some of the low

:18:02. > :18:14.lights. Nike Kim man forced to walk across at the end with a broken

:18:15. > :18:21.bike. He is back in action -- Niek Kimman. DMX, never anything less

:18:22. > :18:26.than spectacular. Fantastic sport from grassroots up to elite level,

:18:27. > :18:30.great way to get into cycling and you have ambitions to take it

:18:31. > :18:37.further you can aim for the Olympics. It teaches you so much

:18:38. > :18:40.about winning and losing. No matter how much how good you are, there's

:18:41. > :18:47.always a bit of bad luck involved, so you have to relearn how to lose

:18:48. > :18:52.as well as how to win. Your heart goes out to him. It is an awful way

:18:53. > :18:56.to end your Olympic campaign. He has put so much into this and all of the

:18:57. > :19:01.people back at British Cycling and Manchester helping him to get here,

:19:02. > :19:06.he's had some huge wins, some great success, some highs and lows, but

:19:07. > :19:11.this will be a championship he will be happy to forget in the future.

:19:12. > :19:15.There was drama in the run-up to London when he smashed himself up in

:19:16. > :19:21.the World Championships about ten weeks out. It is part of this sport.

:19:22. > :19:24.It is a high-risk sport. Although the competitors are dealing with

:19:25. > :19:27.injuries. There's nothing worse than your preparation being handed by

:19:28. > :19:33.something serious like that. It is great that he made it here, but it

:19:34. > :19:36.isn't not a great way to bow out. Would this be quicker than normal

:19:37. > :19:45.here? You have effectively three races for everyone inside roughly

:19:46. > :19:48.one hour. They are spreading the programme out but these

:19:49. > :19:52.quarterfinals are ramped together with a short time to recover, a 35

:19:53. > :19:57.seconds print and they will be desperately trying to recover,

:19:58. > :20:01.trying to replace fluids, getting a massage, just to trying to flush out

:20:02. > :20:06.all the lactic acid, then they have got to get straight back up those

:20:07. > :20:12.stairs onto the start gate. It is a difficult climb up to the start

:20:13. > :20:19.gate. It is easy metres high. -- eight metres high. Will they have an

:20:20. > :20:26.issue with the green painted course? The US director of BMX is a world

:20:27. > :20:30.champion himself, he has been telling us that there is a major

:20:31. > :20:34.issues with the flatness of this green paint. It is so consistent,

:20:35. > :20:43.the athletes find it difficult to perceive depth and perhaps that is

:20:44. > :20:49.causing some problems. Getting ready, then, for the final run. In

:20:50. > :20:53.the meantime, if you have seen the BMX and you like what you have seen

:20:54. > :20:58.and you are inspired to take it up, take a look at this.

:20:59. > :21:01.Get Inspired is BBC Sport's campaign to help you get active.

:22:02. > :22:05.and games consoles. The best of these will be available on the Red

:22:06. > :22:10.Button through satellite, cable or Freeview, depending on your set-top

:22:11. > :22:14.box or TV receiver. If that is not enough you can download the BBC

:22:15. > :22:17.sport app and set up news and medal alerts and live event reminders so

:22:18. > :22:24.that you can follow all your favourite sports. Welcome back to

:22:25. > :22:32.the Deodoro for the BMX. It's the men's quarterfinal today,

:22:33. > :22:36.three runs in each heat, we found the first two, and pretty dramatic

:22:37. > :22:40.they have been as well, with some heavy falls, none more so than for

:22:41. > :22:44.Liam Phillips, from Great Britain, the former world champion, the

:22:45. > :22:50.winner of this seasonal World Cup competition in the last two years,

:22:51. > :22:54.crashing out in his very first run. Terrible bad luck for Liam Phillips.

:22:55. > :22:58.He was in a good position as well. But it has all gone horribly wrong

:22:59. > :23:11.and it is an early flight home for him. Niek Kimman and Joris Daudet

:23:12. > :23:15.both hitting the deck here. Fantastic facility. You have to do

:23:16. > :23:20.hope that the track will be kept in place. The stand is temporary, and

:23:21. > :23:24.will go, but you hope that they will be able to look after this facility

:23:25. > :23:27.and the next few years, we should see more riders from Brazil coming

:23:28. > :23:33.through and challenging as a result of having this facility. There is a

:23:34. > :23:38.great history of BMX success in South America, the Colombians are

:23:39. > :23:41.leading that with Mariana Pajon. But it is a fantastic facility and a

:23:42. > :23:48.great chance for kids to get into this sport in this area. The

:23:49. > :23:53.Colombian fans, very enthusiastic, as ever. And the Brazilians make

:23:54. > :24:06.such a racket when their riders are on the starting gate. A really nasty

:24:07. > :24:09.fall for Joris Daudet. As you can see the riders are getting ready and

:24:10. > :24:14.it will not be too long before we have this third run. There is no

:24:15. > :24:21.delay as far as we are aware. To be honest, they have done well to get

:24:22. > :24:27.three races in, inside one hour. Although some of them have fallen

:24:28. > :24:38.onto the deck. Kyle Evans from Great Britain finding it difficult in his

:24:39. > :24:42.heat. He was in heat four. And at the moment he has finished fifth and

:24:43. > :24:49.seventh with eight riders in each one. If we just have a little look

:24:50. > :24:56.at the race that Liam Phillips was involved in here, it didn't last

:24:57. > :25:01.very long. He had barely got out of turn one before he was in big, big

:25:02. > :25:05.trouble. It was a great start from Liam, but it went wrong on the exit

:25:06. > :25:10.to turn one, clipping the handlebars and going down really heavily,

:25:11. > :25:19.running out of space, big impact when he hit the deck. A sad way for

:25:20. > :25:24.him to end his Olympic campaign. There is. As you can see, there is

:25:25. > :25:31.along way for him to fall, even when he hits the deck, because falls off

:25:32. > :25:35.the off the side of the track and it is some considerable distance before

:25:36. > :25:38.you come to rest. You can see the riders desperate to get back on the

:25:39. > :25:46.track and finish better than last time, because it is an aggregate

:25:47. > :25:49.score. He would throw his bike onto the track and scramble on his hands

:25:50. > :25:58.and knees just to get up to finish the race. You need nerves, speed,

:25:59. > :26:01.athleticism, a great bit of skill, so many split-second decisions that

:26:02. > :26:08.you have do make. Every metre of this course. But at times it does

:26:09. > :26:13.resemble wacky races. It is important to remember that these are

:26:14. > :26:16.sprint athletes. They are producing over 2000 watts, similar to the

:26:17. > :26:24.track sprint athletes at the velodrome. There is a big crossover,

:26:25. > :26:32.with Therese Reid making the transition from BMX to the track.

:26:33. > :26:36.Jamie staff making the summer transition, similar physical

:26:37. > :26:42.attributes but the skill is very different. And didn't Liam Phillips,

:26:43. > :26:49.overdid to the track? He came over to the track to see if it could

:26:50. > :26:56.boost his power, his strength and his record. When he went back to BMX

:26:57. > :27:05.he was almost rejuvenated from it and he went on to become world

:27:06. > :27:19.champion. Nick Long, the world champion from the United States.

:27:20. > :27:28.Edzus Treimanis, from Latvia. Jelly van Gorkom from the Netherlands.

:27:29. > :27:33.Leading after the two runs. But this is a star-studded heat. Just

:27:34. > :27:34.relieved to see dollar debt, the world champion, on the start line

:27:35. > :27:54.after that heavy crash in heat two. Away they go. Kimman making good

:27:55. > :27:57.start, and adore debt, the world champion is out, he's on his bike

:27:58. > :28:02.but he knows he has nothing left, he's out of the running. Nick Long

:28:03. > :28:06.is being followed by Jones of New Zealand. A good series of races for

:28:07. > :28:13.him so far. The Dutch men trying to get in the mix as well. But still on

:28:14. > :28:17.the front is the United States of America, and it is really close

:28:18. > :28:22.behind, the Brazilian rider goes down, just as he was making a big

:28:23. > :28:27.challenge. Nick Long over the lying in first place, Jones second, and

:28:28. > :28:32.Kimman takes third place on the line. And the Brazilian rider was

:28:33. > :28:36.straining every sinew to get in the mix, on that final turn, and he

:28:37. > :28:42.couldn't quite make it and he ended up on the deck. But the good news is

:28:43. > :28:47.he has picked himself up, Albion rather slowly, and he has headed

:28:48. > :28:52.towards the line. And sorry sight, which we will not see, because we

:28:53. > :28:56.are concentrating on the Brazilian cover of the world champion, Joris

:28:57. > :29:03.Daudet, who we were looking forward to seeing in races so much, he

:29:04. > :29:07.started brilliantly yesterday, he looked in absolutely peak form, and

:29:08. > :29:13.we are going to be denied the chance to see him at his absolute best here

:29:14. > :29:18.in Rio. Because he was unable to race competitively there. And his

:29:19. > :29:22.Olympics are over. He lined up not knowing whether he would be able to

:29:23. > :29:25.deal with the snap out of escape and applying force through his body and

:29:26. > :29:31.he quickly realised he would not be able to do it, and what a sad way to

:29:32. > :29:35.end the campaign. Both the Dutch players now qualifying. Nick Long,

:29:36. > :29:39.the bronze medallist in the World Championships, he's gone through on

:29:40. > :29:43.aggregate, and Trent Jones, we didn't expect the Kiwi to make it

:29:44. > :29:47.out of that heat, you would not have been choosing him at the start of

:29:48. > :29:47.the day, but in a strong second position overall.

:29:48. > :29:55.Long has better and better as you can see from those results. In each

:29:56. > :30:01.of the rides. Fair play to Trent Jones, quite right, third, second

:30:02. > :30:05.and second, real consistency at the front-end of the race. Still limping

:30:06. > :30:11.from those injuries sustained early on when his front forks snapped.

:30:12. > :30:15.Kimmann still in the running, getting third on the final race.

:30:16. > :30:21.Here are some of the highlights. It just shows, for Nick and to qualify

:30:22. > :30:25.with fourth, fifth and sixth, it normally wouldn't be enough to get

:30:26. > :30:28.you through. With so many accidents and strange results, he's just

:30:29. > :30:38.scraped through and will be relieved at that. The Brazilian just losing

:30:39. > :30:42.it on the last corner. Renato Rezende it didn't end the way he

:30:43. > :30:50.would have liked. On a grand total of 19 points. The day in 19 as well.

:30:51. > :30:55.Long is going to be a contender, he was medallist in the world champs

:30:56. > :31:01.this year. Beautiful looking course. It's taking a bite out of the riders

:31:02. > :31:08.so far. There is confirmation of the result from heat one. Jelle van

:31:09. > :31:16.Gorkom decisively finishing in first place. Heat two coming up, this heat

:31:17. > :31:24.included Liam Phillips. No longer. With two riders down. Looking to see

:31:25. > :31:34.who else is not in the field, we'll find out soon enough. Kyle Dodd is

:31:35. > :31:37.still there from South Africa. There is David Graf from Switzerland,

:31:38. > :31:42.we'll see if it's third time lucky for him, he's hit the deck in both

:31:43. > :31:48.races so far. They have these neck protectors. Still smiling, good to

:31:49. > :31:52.see. Olympic champion Maris Strombergs. They are made of tough

:31:53. > :31:58.stuff, these BMX racers. Certainly are, more metal bands man. So many

:31:59. > :32:04.plates put in for collarbones that have broken over the years.

:32:05. > :32:05.Jefferson Milano of Van Aswegen. We'll be enjoying it so far, going

:32:06. > :32:24.very well. -- Milano of Venezuela. And there, from Canada, Tory Nyhaug.

:32:25. > :32:29.With only six riders there might be more space and we won't see any of

:32:30. > :32:31.the clinicians we've been seeing in the other heats. We've lost the

:32:32. > :32:36.rider from Indonesia, and Liam Phillips as well. Six instead of

:32:37. > :32:48.eight, and there should be more room on the track. Let's hope so.

:32:49. > :32:55.Nyhaug from Canada leading the way so far. Nearest camera. Graf made a

:32:56. > :33:02.good start for Switzerland, in second place, around turn one.

:33:03. > :33:08.Everybody stayed upright. Being chased by Graf, Nyhaug. Milano. Just

:33:09. > :33:15.about have the momentum to keep going there, around turn two. Graf

:33:16. > :33:20.in front, Nyhaug in second place. They need to keep things steady,

:33:21. > :33:28.don't do anything daft, get round in one piece. Everybody on two wheels.

:33:29. > :33:34.Graf safely over the line. Nyhaug second. The Olympic champion

:33:35. > :33:41.Stromberg is for. It doesn't bode well for Stromberg 's, looks like he

:33:42. > :33:48.will be out. -- for Strombergs. It looks like Strombergs could be out.

:33:49. > :33:52.The Olympic champion is out of the competition at the quarterfinal

:33:53. > :33:56.stage. He has won both times it has been held before in the Olympic

:33:57. > :34:03.Games, in Beijing and in London. As Chris has said, he has been edged

:34:04. > :34:07.out here. By David Graf of Switzerland. After two tough opening

:34:08. > :34:15.races really got his act together in that third one. Interesting to see

:34:16. > :34:20.the whole field having to manually through the big set of doubles, in

:34:21. > :34:24.the wind, it's so strong, unless you get the momentum right, they didn't

:34:25. > :34:28.have enough speed to take the jump. They all rode through the massive

:34:29. > :34:32.set of doubles. Overshooting on the first straight with the huge

:34:33. > :34:39.tailwind. Now turning to the headwind. Didn't quite have the

:34:40. > :34:43.momentum. Coming into this jump. Look, they all rode this jump,

:34:44. > :34:46.haven't seen that before, the full field having to go right the way

:34:47. > :34:51.through. Purely the wind, the headwind. You can see the flags

:34:52. > :34:57.directly in their faces, unless you get the lead-in to that jump 100%,

:34:58. > :35:03.they weren't have the speed for it. -- they won't have the speed.

:35:04. > :35:11.There we are, confirmation Marys Stromberg has missed out by the

:35:12. > :35:17.smallest of margins. As has Kyle Dodd from South Africa, the African

:35:18. > :35:24.continental champion. All tied on 14 points. Dramatic quarterfinal day at

:35:25. > :35:29.this BMX. Kyle Evans from Great Britain in this heat, how was it

:35:30. > :35:32.looking so far? Not great, he's got 12 points, even if he wins it

:35:33. > :35:41.unlikely he is going to go through. Stranger things have happened.

:35:42. > :35:47.There is Kyle Evans, Britain's sole representative left in BMX so far,

:35:48. > :36:01.with Liam Phillips crashed out of the competition. Neither

:36:02. > :36:12.Navrestad of Norway was sixth in Manchester in April. In sixth place

:36:13. > :36:17.at the moment. Connor Fields from the United States has looked good so

:36:18. > :36:22.far. He has to be one of the favourites, of the favourites left.

:36:23. > :36:28.His compatriot, Corben Sharrah, he was fifth in the seeding run. Won

:36:29. > :36:32.one of the Supercross races this season, the first of the season, in

:36:33. > :36:40.Argentina. Melina, his home race to kick the season. Finished 12th back

:36:41. > :36:50.in the spring. And for Australia Anthony Dean. Turner is on the far

:36:51. > :36:57.side, Anthony Dean on the near side, two Aussies in the field. Anthony

:36:58. > :37:08.Dean's second run was the quickest time we've seen from any of the

:37:09. > :37:12.heats, today. Really building up speed quickly in the first two or

:37:13. > :37:17.three seconds of this race. Pressure being put on by Corben Sharrah.

:37:18. > :37:23.Dean. Anthony Dean leaves them around turn one. Going wide on the

:37:24. > :37:29.outside, chased by Corben Sharrah and Connor Fields almost drawing

:37:30. > :37:32.level. Turner coming into the action in fourth place Australia. Down they

:37:33. > :37:39.go through the rhythm section, Dean leading the way, chased by Corben

:37:40. > :37:43.Sharrah and by Connor Fields. They can see the finishing line in front

:37:44. > :37:48.of them, an excellent series for Anthony Dean, the Australian rider,

:37:49. > :37:52.crossing in first place. Corben Sharrah in second. Connor Fields

:37:53. > :38:00.third and Turner from Australia in fourth. Three Americans through

:38:01. > :38:05.already now to the semifinals. Dean looking so impressive there. Yeah,

:38:06. > :38:10.Dean has looked very impressive, second, third and first in those

:38:11. > :38:18.runs. Connor Fields finishing with eight points. Second, Corben

:38:19. > :38:25.Sharrah. And Melina for Argentina getting through. Performed well last

:38:26. > :38:29.race. Unable to squeeze through despite fourth because he finished

:38:30. > :38:33.sixth and eighth in the first two. Kyle Evans in seventh place, as he

:38:34. > :38:47.was in the second race, fifth in the first one. Here it is again. Anthony

:38:48. > :38:53.Dean taking control of the race right from the. You saw the benefit

:38:54. > :38:57.of being on the lane for Dean. Neck and neck with Connor feels, having

:38:58. > :39:03.the inside line. Taking the lead for the first corner. Then the other

:39:04. > :39:12.heats they had so many issues with those doubles. Just very assured

:39:13. > :39:15.performance from Dean. Kyle Evans on the back of your picture, coming

:39:16. > :39:21.over the line. A good series for Melina. He's safely through. The

:39:22. > :39:27.wind is getting stronger and stronger here. Let's just pop down

:39:28. > :39:31.to Jill Douglas by the finishing line, who is with Kyle Evans.

:39:32. > :39:39.It's incredibly windy, how hard is it out there? Hard to explain, the

:39:40. > :39:42.track is so fast, the jumps are quite small and technical, with the

:39:43. > :39:48.big tailwind in the first straight, only so much you can charge, you

:39:49. > :39:53.know? The first race I hit the gate, my own mistake, I got fifth, then

:39:54. > :39:59.came back strong from that. Had two great starts but from the outside.

:40:00. > :40:04.With that kind of wind, and that first it's almost too much. Today I

:40:05. > :40:09.think we've seen. You can be one of the fastest on the circuit, but if

:40:10. > :40:15.you don't have that inside lane choice with that kind of first-term,

:40:16. > :40:20.you've got no hope really. Can't ask too much more of myself. I'm pleased

:40:21. > :40:24.I managed to stay on my bike and I've enjoyed myself. We'll be back

:40:25. > :40:29.for the next one. Thanks very much, Kyle.

:40:30. > :40:34.Disappointment he couldn't squeeze through into the semifinals. He will

:40:35. > :40:38.have gained a lot of experience from these games and I'm sure he'll come

:40:39. > :40:46.back in four years with the benefit of having been here. You'll be back

:40:47. > :40:51.bigger, stronger, faster. Rencurel of France, and Willoughby, two time

:40:52. > :40:57.world champion, in this race. Here he is nearest the camera.

:40:58. > :41:03.Third and final run in the last of the quarterfinal heats. Sam

:41:04. > :41:07.Willoughby and Twan van Gendt are the leading riders. The Russian

:41:08. > :41:13.rider has a problem. Round turn one and they go. Willoughby has time to

:41:14. > :41:16.pick his line committees got daylight, the Dutchman trying to

:41:17. > :41:20.breathe down his neck, the Colombians coming on strong.

:41:21. > :41:27.Rencurel in fourth place and unable to really challenge here. It's

:41:28. > :41:31.Australia and the Netherlands and Carlos Oquendo in third place, it

:41:32. > :41:36.will be a scrap between the Colombians for first. Photo finish

:41:37. > :41:42.between Twan van Gendt and Willoughby and Oquendo just in front

:41:43. > :41:45.of Ramirez. Willoughby gets it on the line from Twan van Gendt. Two

:41:46. > :41:51.Colombians to the next round, along with the Aussie and the Dutch rider.

:41:52. > :42:00.Quite a few South Americans mated to the the Venezuelan, Argentinian,

:42:01. > :42:06.great for the home support. -- quite a few South Americans made it to the

:42:07. > :42:12.semifinals. Part of the track is blowing around, which is causing a

:42:13. > :42:20.few problems. Confirmation that Willoughby, Oquendo, Ramirez are

:42:21. > :42:25.through, as is Twan van Gendt. Twan van Gendt the third qualifier, there

:42:26. > :42:28.he is, confirmation of it. And the Frenchman Jeremy Rencurel crosses

:42:29. > :42:34.the line now, I wondered what had happened to him, he obviously fell

:42:35. > :42:37.and is now crossing the line, a very disappointed figure indeed. He

:42:38. > :42:42.finishes in fifth place. Fourth in the World Championship but out at

:42:43. > :42:46.the quarterfinal stage of the Olympic Games. It's fair to say

:42:47. > :42:52.we've seen a very dramatic and eventful men's BMX quarterfinal

:42:53. > :42:57.series of races here. There was no doubt who was the best rider in heat

:42:58. > :43:04.three. This one. It's Sam Willoughby from Australia. There is Rencurel's

:43:05. > :43:06.crash which took him out of proceedings and put him out of

:43:07. > :43:13.contention, out of these Olympic Games. Disappearing off the side of

:43:14. > :43:18.the track but thankfully not seriously injured. On that final

:43:19. > :43:24.term as they came up towards the line. Disappointing news from the

:43:25. > :43:33.British point of view today from the BMX is that Liam Phillips crashed

:43:34. > :43:38.out in his very first race. What an exciting day of BMX action, joyful

:43:39. > :43:42.so have many going through to the semifinals tomorrow but a bitterly

:43:43. > :43:44.disappointing day for Liam Phillips out of the Olympics after that

:43:45. > :43:51.horrible crashing his first run. Chris Hoy, you'll be devastated.

:43:52. > :43:55.Thinking about the hard work that has gone into getting in here, the

:43:56. > :44:00.injuries, setbacks he has had to deal with, and the great form, great

:44:01. > :44:06.results, World Cup wins, we had big hopes for Liam and it's so sad to

:44:07. > :44:09.see him happen. -- it happen. He was top two. It shows how tight it is.

:44:10. > :44:13.The speed they are carrying, they are getting pushed wide, caught the

:44:14. > :44:18.bar as he went down, he went down really heavily. As we heard from

:44:19. > :44:22.Kyle Evans, he said because of the wind they have to change the way

:44:23. > :44:25.they tackle this course. They can overshoot the jumps on the first

:44:26. > :44:30.straight, on the second with the cross headwind, the big set of

:44:31. > :44:33.doubles, the third heat in the final round of quarterfinals, all eight

:44:34. > :44:37.riders had to ride through the job because the wind was that strong.

:44:38. > :44:41.It's not even as if it's consistently in one direction with

:44:42. > :44:46.one speed, there are busts, changes, they have to adapt. It's part of the

:44:47. > :44:50.sport, making conditions difficult. Given the last couple of days we

:44:51. > :44:57.seen the wind change. At the weekend with a big storm, winds of 90 mph.

:44:58. > :45:00.We're quite exposed. We are, not the kind of sport you can deal with

:45:01. > :45:05.these things happening. A slight gust of wind, you move across midair

:45:06. > :45:08.a few inches, catch the riding next to you, before you know it you have

:45:09. > :45:12.a season-ending injury. It's tough to see because you know how much

:45:13. > :45:16.work these athletes put in their training, to explain to people who

:45:17. > :45:19.haven't seen BMX before, these are like the velodrome track sprint

:45:20. > :45:25.athletes, they produce 2000 plus watts peak power, very disciplined,

:45:26. > :45:29.work so hard, all these skills that go into this, the mental toughness

:45:30. > :45:34.to deal with the pressure. To see it end through an accident is really

:45:35. > :45:37.tough for them. The world champion bug will not go through to the

:45:38. > :45:41.semifinals nor will the defending Olympic champion, -- the world

:45:42. > :45:50.champion Daudet. We the day, but in a strong second

:45:51. > :46:02.position overall. Sir Chris Hoy knows exactly how you

:46:03. > :46:06.will be feeling right now but he will get back up and he will go

:46:07. > :46:11.again. We are hoping that Liam Phillips will come back and be

:46:12. > :46:14.successful for Great Britain, but a sad and disappointing end for both

:46:15. > :46:22.British riders with Kyle Evans going out at the semifinal stage. --

:46:23. > :46:29.quarterfinal stage. Earlier on, we won -- we saw a wonderful gold run

:46:30. > :46:33.by Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark in the sailing. I'm sure that Shirley

:46:34. > :46:39.Robertson would love to get her hands on some more successful great

:46:40. > :46:49.British sailors, and the British crew were fourth in the 49er class.

:46:50. > :46:55.What is a state of affairs now? The men's 49er class, it is the skiff

:46:56. > :47:03.for men. Great Britain with a great chance of either silver or bronze.

:47:04. > :47:10.The gold has already gone to the TV favourites. Let's join our

:47:11. > :47:22.commentary team and find out how the British duo are getting on. In the

:47:23. > :47:29.two person men's 49er class we are just about to see the conclusion of

:47:30. > :47:35.lap two, Emily, it is the four time world champion is from New Zealand.

:47:36. > :47:38.The great British pair have sailed well to close backing on the

:47:39. > :47:43.leaders. It has been a good performance from the British team in

:47:44. > :47:46.the latter half of this race. They had a disastrous first half when

:47:47. > :47:49.they were penalised by the umpires and were in last place but they have

:47:50. > :47:54.fought their way back and they are in the top five. It is not just a

:47:55. > :47:58.case of beating the Australians and Germans, they need to beat four bows

:47:59. > :48:07.in between. It is still all to play for. A change of course signalled at

:48:08. > :48:11.the bottom for the final lap with Denmark coming round the gate in

:48:12. > :48:15.third place. Now an important moment for Great Britain, Spain, Poland,

:48:16. > :48:19.Great Britain and Australia all coming into this lead at the same

:48:20. > :48:23.time, Spain crossing the bowels of Great Britain, Poland on the

:48:24. > :48:27.right-hand side, Great Britain just holding them up now, Spain and

:48:28. > :48:34.Australia going round the top marker at the same time. At the bottom of

:48:35. > :48:39.your screen, the great British pair on the inside of Poland. That was a

:48:40. > :48:45.crucial moment. And Great Britain capsizing at the bottom of the

:48:46. > :48:49.course, disaster for Great Britain. They won the inside of the turn

:48:50. > :48:53.against the Polish, they were looking strong in this race and a

:48:54. > :48:58.slight slip in the balance, and now they are capsized, and the rest of

:48:59. > :49:04.the field sales passed. Disaster for the British team. They have done the

:49:05. > :49:10.hard work, but they had to get right of way, they talked about how these

:49:11. > :49:16.bows don't like to go slowly, they don't balance well, and they will be

:49:17. > :49:20.furious. They hit the mark. Fighting for the inside of the mark. The

:49:21. > :49:29.action taking place on the bottom right-hand side of your team, there,

:49:30. > :49:33.the British team drop their position. Just getting caught out of

:49:34. > :49:38.position. They could not get the mainsail across, and it got the

:49:39. > :49:44.better of them. You can just see them getting caught up with the

:49:45. > :49:48.boom. They did everything they could to try and hold off that capsize,

:49:49. > :49:57.but they go into this final lap, firmly behind. The boom did not come

:49:58. > :50:02.across, the body are already gone and they were not able to turn the

:50:03. > :50:07.boat because of the position of the mark. As we have seen with these

:50:08. > :50:12.bows, they capsize very easily. That is one of the reasons why they are

:50:13. > :50:21.so dramatic. Now there is a novel lot of work to do. Peter Burling and

:50:22. > :50:25.Blair Tuke from New Zealand have the gold medal in their grasp. The

:50:26. > :50:30.silver Medal is between Germany, Australia, and Great Britain. The

:50:31. > :50:39.British hopes for the silver medal in the 49er event seemed to have

:50:40. > :50:42.evaporated. Capsizing at the bottom of the course before the final lap

:50:43. > :50:48.and they are now well and truly on the back foot. Out in the lead,

:50:49. > :50:54.Peter Burling and Blair Tuke from New Zealand making it look

:50:55. > :50:59.incredibly easy. I love the way that they sail, they look relaxed and

:51:00. > :51:04.calm, they are able to look around for patches of wind and dust, they

:51:05. > :51:11.communicate well, they are in control of this race. They are

:51:12. > :51:16.shepherding the bows out to the ley line, the Orange line on the screen

:51:17. > :51:22.where you can make one more attack in. They are between the next mark

:51:23. > :51:26.and their opponents. Looking very, very relaxed and enjoying their gold

:51:27. > :51:33.medal winning performance here in Rio. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke

:51:34. > :51:39.from New Zealand, getting close to the top of the course for the final

:51:40. > :51:45.time. They have had the gold medal waiting for them for the last few

:51:46. > :51:48.days. And now, all they need to do is get round this mark you can see

:51:49. > :51:58.on the right hand side of your screen and crossed the finish line.

:51:59. > :52:02.And the gold medal will be theirs. Fletcher and Simon from Great

:52:03. > :52:09.Britain, trying to close down the estuary and is, however, they need

:52:10. > :52:16.to sailed past bows and finish well into that front field and gain some

:52:17. > :52:24.points advantage, and frankly, it is not looking possible. You can see

:52:25. > :52:29.how confident the Kiwis are. They have seen more wind out on the

:52:30. > :52:33.left-hand side of your screen, happy to do that, they can then come back

:52:34. > :52:40.with a tack advantage and they look an awful long way ahead. The British

:52:41. > :52:45.team, to recover from a capsize and a penalty, that be asking too much.

:52:46. > :52:50.It was looking like a sensational recovery right up until that point.

:52:51. > :52:53.Don't rule out the British hopes just yet, because as we have seen,

:52:54. > :52:57.the breeze can get the better of these sailors, even though they are

:52:58. > :53:04.the best in the world, and capsizing is not unheard of. Denmark round the

:53:05. > :53:08.windward mark in third place, just behind the French. Now it is the

:53:09. > :53:12.turn of the Polish team. Depressing to see Poland going round the top of

:53:13. > :53:20.the course in fourth when that could so easily have been a British pair.

:53:21. > :53:25.And crucially for them, Germany towards the back and this race. So

:53:26. > :53:32.it is looking good for an Australian silver medal in Rio. The brothers

:53:33. > :53:43.from Argentina going round the bowel of Ireland. There, we can see the

:53:44. > :53:47.German team throwing the boat into a gybe right after they rounded so

:53:48. > :53:52.still looking for opportunities in this final leg. Germany with some

:53:53. > :53:59.work to do. Great Britain coming into view, still to round that final

:54:00. > :54:03.mark. Out in the league, it is the four time world champions, Peter

:54:04. > :54:07.Burling and Blair Tuke, on their way to the finish line. A quick check

:54:08. > :54:11.behind confirms what they already know. They are certainly head and

:54:12. > :54:19.shoulders above the rest of the field here in Rio. There is the

:54:20. > :54:25.finish line ahead of the bows. Very tidy gybe for the New Zealand pair.

:54:26. > :54:30.The crew, back out on the wire, plenty of breeze for this medal

:54:31. > :54:36.race, the 49ers certainly enjoying this medal race. It is worth

:54:37. > :54:42.pointing out that the trillions had a good beat, and the British team

:54:43. > :54:45.not only had to beat the Australians but four boats in between, so they

:54:46. > :54:50.were throwing everything at it. They were taking a risk, that they would

:54:51. > :54:56.not otherwise do, because there was not an Olympic medal on the line.

:54:57. > :54:59.With the Israelis in fifth place it would have been impossible for

:55:00. > :55:04.Fletcher and signed to win that medal. Good on them for having a go.

:55:05. > :55:11.This series is all about these men here. The world number one pair from

:55:12. > :55:15.New Zealand, the four time world champions, and now Olympic gold

:55:16. > :55:21.medallists in Rio. APPLAUSE

:55:22. > :55:25.We knew that this moment was going to happen. We knew what was going to

:55:26. > :55:31.be the conclusion of the Olympic racing in Rio. Peter Burling and

:55:32. > :55:35.Blair Tuke cartwheel their 49er into the water, once they have crossed

:55:36. > :55:43.the finish line. The gold medal is theirs. France come through the

:55:44. > :55:47.line, coming with a Denmark after them, and Australia coming through

:55:48. > :55:53.having held Germany at bay. Australia crossed the finish line.

:55:54. > :56:07.Gold medal in London 2012 and now in Rio 2016, Silver Medal for Jenson

:56:08. > :56:12.and Outteridge. We thought it was going to be a tight race, but in

:56:13. > :56:17.fact that never materialise. The Australians sailed well and

:56:18. > :56:22.recovered. It is another Silver Medal on the water out here for

:56:23. > :56:32.Australia today. Spain coming through the line now. And then

:56:33. > :56:40.Argentina, just getting ahead of Germany and disappointment for the

:56:41. > :56:45.German pair, unable to get back into the hunt for the Silver Medal. The

:56:46. > :56:57.German team will leave Rio with a bronze. And unfortunately for Great

:56:58. > :57:01.Britain, Fletcher and Sign had their moments but they slipped out of the

:57:02. > :57:08.medals. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, Silver Medal in London 2012,

:57:09. > :57:11.but now they have beaten their great rivals in Rio, pushing the

:57:12. > :57:24.Australians into second place. And way to finish the racing. It has

:57:25. > :57:29.been a long time coming. This is the crew that have dominated this

:57:30. > :57:36.Olympiad. Four World Championship titles, second in the world in 2012,

:57:37. > :57:45.and in 2011. And the gold medal, richly deserve. We talked about the

:57:46. > :57:50.vagaries of the day and the shifting winds would make it difficult for

:57:51. > :57:58.the favourites, but the real talent has prevailed in Rio. We saw the

:57:59. > :58:05.Giles Scott in the Finn class, and we have seen it again with Peter

:58:06. > :58:08.Burling and Blair Tuke in the 49er class. If you're good enough you can

:58:09. > :58:13.sail anywhere in the world and you will beat the opposition. Richly

:58:14. > :58:21.deserved. The gold medal goes to Peter Burling and Blair Tuke from

:58:22. > :58:43.New Zealand, and the bronze medal goes to Germany. Happy faces for

:58:44. > :58:47.two. They got the better of Burling and Tuke in London but in this

:58:48. > :58:52.Olympics, the New Zealand pair were just dominant. They got control in

:58:53. > :58:56.the early stages of that raise and unfortunately slipped down. They

:58:57. > :59:00.knew that they would have a medal coming out of this Olympic Games,

:59:01. > :59:04.they just didn't know what colour it would be. A good performance for

:59:05. > :59:25.them. They hold onto that bronze spot.

:59:26. > :59:37.Scenes of celebration for the fans of Burling and Tuke, from New

:59:38. > :59:41.Zealand. Asked for the Australian pair of Outerridge and Jensen, and

:59:42. > :59:41.out there on the water is Shirley Robertson with the final moments

:59:42. > :59:49.from it was fast and furious, but what a

:59:50. > :59:52.lesson from the Kiwi team. Just to watch them was an absolute joy,

:59:53. > :00:00.these boats are no victorious leader forgot to handle and they make it

:00:01. > :00:01.look so easy. My heart goes out to the British duo of
