:00:11. > :00:22.Welcome to viewers on BBC Two, it is three all in the match. Penalty
:00:23. > :00:34.shoot out potentially looming and all the drama and further tension
:00:35. > :00:41.that that will bring with it. In the back of the Dutch line, the last few
:00:42. > :00:57.times they have faced Leurink in a penalty shoot out, they have lost,
:00:58. > :01:04.the last in Belgium -- Maddie Hinch. Richardson-Walsh is back tidying up.
:01:05. > :01:10.She is unstoppable on the right flank. Sent across, Maddie Hinch
:01:11. > :01:16.sticks out her foot and sends a clear. Free hit this side for the
:01:17. > :01:18.ball off the stick of Susannah Townsend. Inside the final 60
:01:19. > :01:36.seconds of the game. One more chance for Great Britain to
:01:37. > :01:42.finish it in normal time. Pressing forward, cautiously, which is
:01:43. > :01:50.understandable. 30 seconds left in the gold medal game, Helen
:01:51. > :02:03.Richardson-Walsh finds Georgie Twigg. Loses possession.
:02:04. > :02:14.Last ten seconds, the gold medal game is going to a penalty shoot
:02:15. > :02:26.out. Three all at the end of normal time, penalties to follow.
:02:27. > :02:33.It is penalties now, Great Britain somehow have clawed themselves back
:02:34. > :02:40.into it. For long periods, until the end of the game, the Dutch
:02:41. > :02:44.dominated. They dominated, had so much possession, turned GB over in
:02:45. > :02:49.areas, but they have been successful, not just over this
:02:50. > :02:53.tournament but in the last couple of years. The ability of Maddie Hinch
:02:54. > :02:59.has been an real and they ride it again and again and come forward and
:03:00. > :03:07.they get a chance and they score a goal. It comes down to this, take us
:03:08. > :03:11.through the penalty shoot out format. It is an eight second timed
:03:12. > :03:16.opportunity. The attacker will start from the goal-line, the goalkeeper
:03:17. > :03:22.will advance. Eight seconds to score. Not a single opportunity, if
:03:23. > :03:28.there is a rebound, you can go again and again until the time runs out.
:03:29. > :03:38.If the goalkeeper files, it can be upgraded to a penalty stroke. An
:03:39. > :03:45.eight second one on one. Somehow Great Britain drive themselves back
:03:46. > :03:51.into it with the equaliser. It was not pretty. In the end, not in by
:03:52. > :03:58.Nichola White, but they had to keep going, they had to believe, it comes
:03:59. > :04:04.from years of training, it is ingrained, born out of the gym, on a
:04:05. > :04:10.dark wet December evening, they build that confidence. It takes you
:04:11. > :04:18.through a game when the opponent is dominant and the opponent is all
:04:19. > :04:24.over you but you hold firm. It was Nicola White who got the equaliser.
:04:25. > :04:32.Maddie Hinch has been the store. What advantage does she give us? Her
:04:33. > :04:36.preparation. She allegedly has a little black broke, there are
:04:37. > :04:41.tactics written on the back of her water bottle. She will have done a
:04:42. > :04:46.massive amount of preparation. She knows what she did in the European
:04:47. > :04:51.Cup final for England. Does it matter that the Dutch have already
:04:52. > :04:56.come through in a penalty shoot out? It makes no difference, these
:04:57. > :05:02.players train, they will have repeated the action, for me it has
:05:03. > :05:10.been decisive. They have a basic understanding. Do not get cautious.
:05:11. > :05:17.Do not change your mind, stick with what you know. It is important to
:05:18. > :05:23.keep a clear mind. Maddie Hinch looking at her book, spot on. Is
:05:24. > :05:31.there any way of telling the skills that these guys have, how much
:05:32. > :05:39.practice have they done. They have practised until it becomes
:05:40. > :05:47.instinctive. There is not time to think, you have to look but the
:05:48. > :05:52.goalkeeper is doing. Read her body position, go into a different space.
:05:53. > :05:58.Where is the ball being carried? None of that can be processed in
:05:59. > :06:04.real-time. It is all about that instinctive knowledge. This is real
:06:05. > :06:12.drama coming up, a penalty shoot out is far away. Everything crossed
:06:13. > :06:19.appear in the commentary box. Helen Richardson-Walsh is first away. She
:06:20. > :06:25.will take on the Dutch goalkeeper, Joyce Sombroek. The eight second
:06:26. > :06:31.time will appear on the giant scoreboard and then the umpire will
:06:32. > :06:43.blow the whistle for the start. First penalty of the shoot out in
:06:44. > :06:55.the gold medal game. Helen Richardson-Walsh on her way, holds
:06:56. > :06:59.it up. Saved and behind. Was not the best from Helen Richardson-Walsh,
:07:00. > :07:05.she does the right thing, turns her back and then she does not get the
:07:06. > :07:11.drive she needs to put the ball out of reach and Joyce Sombroek took the
:07:12. > :07:16.first of the shoot out four the Dutch in the semifinal and he
:07:17. > :07:29.stepped up first game today. She tends to come in and slap the ball
:07:30. > :07:37.off the top. Bos. It is behind, it is a mess. Great goalkeeping from
:07:38. > :07:41.Maddie Hinch, sprinted off her line. She is clever, she changes were she
:07:42. > :07:49.starts, her run-up each time and that time she chose the post. She
:07:50. > :07:57.kept it out and up next is Alex Danson. She will take the second
:07:58. > :08:08.penalty for Great Britain. Alex Danson, charging towards Joyce
:08:09. > :08:18.Sombroek. She is out of time. Three penalties, no luck from any player
:08:19. > :08:25.yet. One of the world's best players cannot hurt to watch. Alex Danson
:08:26. > :08:35.turning her back, Joyce Sombroek is able to do the splits. Ellen Hoog is
:08:36. > :08:41.up next for the Dutch. She scored in sudden death but Mr first one in the
:08:42. > :08:49.last penalty shoot out. Ellen Hoog against Maddie Hinch. Fourth penalty
:08:50. > :08:55.of the shoot out. Ellen Hoog, Maddie Hinch has got hold of it, it is
:08:56. > :09:06.under her body, she will kick it clear. Maddie Hinch, absolutely
:09:07. > :09:10.brilliant. Maddie Hinch on this one, deciding, she comes out slowly this
:09:11. > :09:16.time, stutters as she comes out, really of poets Ellen Hoog, tries to
:09:17. > :09:21.roll it under, it does exceptionally well not to cover the ball and give
:09:22. > :09:28.away another shoot out. Sophie Bray. Sophie Bray is next up, one of the
:09:29. > :09:36.outstanding players for Great Britain in this Olympic tournament.
:09:37. > :09:42.Will she be the first to score? She is brought down, penalty stroke. In
:09:43. > :09:46.this situation, anyone can take the penalty stroke, it does not have to
:09:47. > :09:58.be the person involved in the shoot out which is why Sophie Bray is
:09:59. > :10:04.coming back. Joyce Sombroek has changed her stick for it the penalty
:10:05. > :10:22.stroke. Helen Richardson-Walsh is striding forward to take the penalty
:10:23. > :10:27.stroke. Can she find the target? Helen Richardson-Walsh, penalty
:10:28. > :10:33.stroke. Scores! Great Britain are off the market in the shoot out.
:10:34. > :10:38.Love that phase, the entire Dutch crowd were booing her, she will play
:10:39. > :10:42.her club hockey there next season. That is calmness under pressure,
:10:43. > :10:49.rolling the ball into the corner. Some of the girls cannot watch. Next
:10:50. > :10:56.up for the Netherlands, it is Laurien Leurink. Maddie Hinch is not
:10:57. > :11:04.imposition, no real rush to get there, it will make things more
:11:05. > :11:07.tense for Laurien Leurink. She is 19 years old, Maddie Hinch playing mind
:11:08. > :11:17.games with, she is a quality player with a lot learn. The Dutch have not
:11:18. > :11:20.scored one yet. Can Laurien Leurink get their first? She's going all the
:11:21. > :11:33.way around, Maddie Hinch pushes it away. I think that sums up probably
:11:34. > :11:37.everyone watching! It is brave for a 19-year-old to step up and take a
:11:38. > :11:41.penalty in a shoot out in the Olympic Games but Maddie Hinch
:11:42. > :11:48.showing why she is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world
:11:49. > :11:55.in this situation. Laura Unsworth. She is on her way. Joyce Sombroek
:11:56. > :12:05.size, another chance for Laura Unsworth, high, over the top.
:12:06. > :12:15.-- Joyce Sombroek saves it. Laura Unsworth choosing to emulate Bos and
:12:16. > :12:22.take a shot from the top. Takes a chance and tries to hit it over the
:12:23. > :12:35.keeper. Now we have got 68 for the Dutch team. -- Margot Van Geffen.
:12:36. > :12:41.Margot Van Geffen poised over the ball, inching forward. Maddie Hinch
:12:42. > :12:49.watching it, but she has hit the post, she has missed, Maddie Hinch
:12:50. > :12:55.will clear. Bottom line right now, is if Hollie Webb scores, if Hollie
:12:56. > :13:03.Webb scores, wheat, Great Britain win the gold medal. This is the
:13:04. > :13:18.golden opportunity for Hollie Webb of Great Britain. Joyce Sombroek
:13:19. > :13:26.stands in her way. Hollie Webb on her way to win gold for Great
:13:27. > :13:31.Britain. Hollie Webb, turns, scores! That is the golden goal! Great
:13:32. > :13:40.Britain have won the Olympic gold medal! Their history makers, the
:13:41. > :13:46.hockey history makers, they will each leave Rio with a gold medal.
:13:47. > :13:54.Great Britain are at the Olympic champions and they are on top of the
:13:55. > :13:59.world. Absolutely unbelievable. Look what it means to those players, look
:14:00. > :14:03.what it means back home, anyone who has tuned in watching that on a
:14:04. > :14:09.Friday night, that is something else. I am speechless, I will not
:14:10. > :14:14.get emotional, I cannot believe what I have just seen. It is incredible
:14:15. > :14:19.that Great Britain are walking off here with an Olympic gold medal,
:14:20. > :14:26.eight from eight in the biggest tournament in the world. Eight
:14:27. > :14:32.matches, a Twins, Danny Carey is on the pitch at last. He is down now to
:14:33. > :14:40.celebrate to celebrate with the rest of his staff, Great Britain's 24th
:14:41. > :14:46.gold medal of these games, the first time that the women's British hockey
:14:47. > :14:53.team have struck gold, Maddie Hinch in the gold for Great Britain, once
:14:54. > :14:58.again, the hero of the occasion and the Dutch who won the last two
:14:59. > :15:05.Olympic gold medals will have to settle for the silver tonight.
:15:06. > :15:10.Sounds good, sorry, sounds good. They are the number one team in the
:15:11. > :15:14.world for a reason, they put on a display, no doubt about that in my
:15:15. > :15:23.mind. Anyone watching, the Dutch are a credit to the sport as well.
:15:24. > :15:30.That's all I can say, honestly. It is absolutely incredible, it really
:15:31. > :15:34.is incredible. I... What about Maddie Hinch? We said before the
:15:35. > :15:38.game, it's the third time she has been the hero for England and Great
:15:39. > :15:43.Britain. She's going to love playing in Holland next year, she'll walk
:15:44. > :15:49.into that club with a gold medal around her neck. It'll be a golden
:15:50. > :15:52.goodbye to Kate Richardson-Walsh after so many years of dedicated
:15:53. > :16:00.service to her sport and to her nation. This is how Hollie Webb won
:16:01. > :16:09.the gold for Great Britain. We'll never get bored of seeing that ever.
:16:10. > :16:10.The celebrations can begin. What a night at Deodoro, Great Britain are
:16:11. > :16:26.the Olympic champions. Rishi STUDIO: What a great moment for
:16:27. > :16:31.Britain's hockey team. Simon? I genuinely struggled to put that into
:16:32. > :16:33.words, after a game of that nature where Great Britain were under the
:16:34. > :16:37.cosh for huge chunks of it, they came back in again and again, there
:16:38. > :16:41.were a number of people who felt that if they got to penalties they
:16:42. > :16:44.would win. They have history from the European cup, they have the best
:16:45. > :16:49.goalkeeper in the world, who is unreal, fair play to Maddie Hinch,
:16:50. > :16:53.saved everything put at her. Just incredible. It'll change the face of
:16:54. > :16:57.British oche come impact team sport. It's unbelievable. The Dutch team
:16:58. > :17:02.have done remarkably well, they have a lot to be proud of. Together the
:17:03. > :17:08.two teams have produced almost the dream final. It was a spectacle that
:17:09. > :17:12.I not commentated on or been involved with ever. That was the
:17:13. > :17:16.finest display, maybe not tactically, it was a little bit up
:17:17. > :17:20.and down at times, but as a game, as a spectator in the stadium, for
:17:21. > :17:24.those watching back home, it was unreal. Lovely sportsmanship between
:17:25. > :17:28.the sides as well. What does it say about the sport of hockey? What does
:17:29. > :17:32.tonight say about the sport of hockey to you? It shows anybody, if
:17:33. > :17:37.they believe enough, any team if they believe enough can get to this
:17:38. > :17:40.stage. Some of these athletes are first-time Olympians, some of them
:17:41. > :17:46.three or four time Olympians, but you just have to keep going. If you
:17:47. > :17:50.have a dream you can fulfil it. Yes, they've had hard knocks, training,
:17:51. > :17:54.physical elements, what these girls, most teams, have displayed, has been
:17:55. > :17:57.exceptional. To see the sportsmanship they are showing, they
:17:58. > :18:04.have good friends out there, they've battled till the last whistle. You
:18:05. > :18:07.can here celebrations in the Deodoro Stadium, the women dancing, the team
:18:08. > :18:12.dancing, they are having a great time because I imagine the release,
:18:13. > :18:18.after this two week intense period, where they have banned social media,
:18:19. > :18:25.taken themselves away, gone into lockdown to get ready for this
:18:26. > :18:29.moment, now they can celebrate. This involves 31 athletes and support
:18:30. > :18:32.staff, they've gone into lockdown. Mel has joined us from commentary,
:18:33. > :18:38.what a result. They've put themselves beyond doubt as the class
:18:39. > :18:42.outfit in British team sport. What an exceptional result for them. In
:18:43. > :18:46.all truth they haven't been the best side tonight, the Dutch have looked
:18:47. > :18:49.much better, but what they have done tonight and through the tournament
:18:50. > :18:54.is shown belief, belief in each other, and shown there is such a
:18:55. > :18:56.bond that they will not be broken. Absolutely, chose possession doesn't
:18:57. > :19:00.mean anything in sport, the moment it went to the penalty shoot out,
:19:01. > :19:05.it's in Dutch minds. Maddie Hinch three out of three against the Dutch
:19:06. > :19:08.is phenomenal. They talked a lot about belief after the champions
:19:09. > :19:12.Trophy, I sat there and commentated, watched it, I thought how are you
:19:13. > :19:18.going to turn it around in 60 days? They have, eight from eight,
:19:19. > :19:21.incredible. I hate to pick out individual is because every single
:19:22. > :19:25.one, not just the people here, those that missed out on final selection
:19:26. > :19:33.as well, they've all played a part, all played significant parts. Danny
:19:34. > :19:36.Carey and Kate Richardson-Walsh, sing their praises. I've been
:19:37. > :19:41.fortunate enough to have played with Kate and been coached by Danny
:19:42. > :19:45.Carey, is probably the best tactical coach I've ever worked with, he and
:19:46. > :19:49.his team go through hours and hours of footage to get the players in
:19:50. > :19:51.this position. Kate Richardson-Walsh is probably one of the most
:19:52. > :19:55.colourful hockey players you will ever come across, she has no idea
:19:56. > :19:59.the impact she's had on the sport at all. Just have a look at those
:20:00. > :20:04.scenes, you know what it's like to be part of that team. I don't know
:20:05. > :20:08.what it's like to feel like that! Honestly I don't. I have a lot of
:20:09. > :20:12.friends in there. I'm proud and privileged to say they are my
:20:13. > :20:15.friends. I've got a clubmate in there who's going to come back...
:20:16. > :20:21.Has a lot of other clubs have... There's a lot of celebrations going
:20:22. > :20:26.on back home. Watching some of their faces, it looks like this is exactly
:20:27. > :20:30.what they expected. Well, it might be what they plan for, it might be
:20:31. > :20:35.what they expected, but they have genuinely no idea what they've done,
:20:36. > :20:41.this is the moment they will savour for absolutely ever. The emotion the
:20:42. > :20:45.Passion, is outstanding. Mel's off to grab a quick interview for us
:20:46. > :20:49.while we look at it. The crowd applauding them and applauding the
:20:50. > :20:53.Dutch team, just behind us here. I'll reiterate, they were
:20:54. > :20:58.outstanding. They have contributed their part to a fantastic match. I'm
:20:59. > :21:00.certain this will have inspired an audience and players around the
:21:01. > :21:05.world who haven't played in the past. The skills on display,
:21:06. > :21:07.offensively, from the Dutch, were magnificent. From the British
:21:08. > :21:12.perspective, it might have been a little bit last-ditch as we try to
:21:13. > :21:16.get an interview... They had to hang on at times.
:21:17. > :21:21.That's what they did, they played to strength, it's what they did against
:21:22. > :21:27.Australia, they came back, Maddie was brilliant. The chances came. It
:21:28. > :21:30.may not have been pretty but it was effective. Celebrations continuing,
:21:31. > :21:34.so difficult to grab their attention, we'd love to grab a word
:21:35. > :21:37.with Maddie if at all possible art at the moment she wants to be part
:21:38. > :21:46.of what's going on. Still wandering around here, saluting every single
:21:47. > :21:51.member of the crowd. Who is part of the Great Britain support. To let
:21:52. > :21:55.you know, we'll have more reaction from here on BBC Two. We can allow
:21:56. > :21:59.them to celebrate because they deserve it.
:22:00. > :22:09.Just tonight we came here, we expected... They lifted our
:22:10. > :22:15.expectations, Simon. It's still almost hard to believe it came off.
:22:16. > :22:20.It is hard to believe emotionally. If we take it in the cold light of
:22:21. > :22:25.day, this has been years in the making. The girls did expect it. The
:22:26. > :22:28.girls knew they could deliver this. Whether the fans knew it, whether
:22:29. > :22:32.they believed it, whether it was a bit of a pipe dream, every one of
:22:33. > :22:36.those 31 players and support staff believe this moment would come,
:22:37. > :22:42.that's why they delivered in the face of all adversity, it was
:22:43. > :22:46.exceptional. Clare, history made, lots of celebrating going on at
:22:47. > :22:51.Deodoro. STUDIO: I think it's one of the greatest result ever for a
:22:52. > :22:54.women's team sport. We'll have ceremonies and interviews on BBC
:22:55. > :22:58.Two. Hollie Webb with the winning penalty but Maddie Hinch a heroine
:22:59. > :23:03.in goal. We're leaving you shortly on BBC One, coverage already on BBC
:23:04. > :23:07.Two, and it continues. Composure, confidence, character as won a gold
:23:08. > :23:11.medal for the very first time in women's hockey, for Great Britain.
:23:12. > :23:15.We're ready here for 60 minutes of blood, sweat and ultimately tears.
:23:16. > :23:24.One way or the other. Helen Richardson-Walsh waiting in
:23:25. > :23:28.the centre of the circle. Off the legs and this time scored. Great
:23:29. > :23:31.Britain are in front, Lily Owsley strikes.
:23:32. > :23:42.The Dutch inside the circle. Maddie Hinch is out. The angle to goal.
:23:43. > :23:47.Kitty van Male! It's a goal for the Netherlands, 2-1 in front. A chance
:23:48. > :23:48.for Crista Cullen, she's scored. Kitty van Male gets the goal,
:23:49. > :24:03.second. Great Britain are level penalty shoot out. That's the golden
:24:04. > :24:09.goal. Great Britain have won the Olympic gold-medal!
:24:10. > :24:19.Welcome back to the Deodoro Stadium here... Welcome back to Deodoro,
:24:20. > :24:23.where the Great Britain women's hockey team are celebrating their
:24:24. > :24:28.first ever gold medal. Mel Clewlow and Simon Mason alongside me. They
:24:29. > :24:31.are in the huddle now, any idea what Danny Carey the coach might be
:24:32. > :24:35.saying? I can guarantee you one thing, you'll be crying, is such an
:24:36. > :24:41.emotional man, you see him with a poker face during matches, but he is
:24:42. > :24:45.an immensely proud man as well. I've watched him walk around here, I
:24:46. > :24:49.think he's in total disbelief that his team has just won the Olympic
:24:50. > :24:54.gold medal. Simon, we've spoken a few minutes ago on BBC One about the
:24:55. > :25:04.belief and expectation, how much of that has come from Danny Care all of
:25:05. > :25:08.it, he set the bar, I'm sure we'll talk to the players in a moment.
:25:09. > :25:11.Between them it's a collective, once that management team starts to
:25:12. > :25:14.dictate it and they buy into it wholly and totally. Here they come,
:25:15. > :25:18.slowly coming through, hopefully we'll get every single one of them.
:25:19. > :25:24.The problem is as they come through there might be a few embraces. Let
:25:25. > :25:28.them talk to us. Of course I will! There is a whole lot of love that
:25:29. > :25:31.has to be shared. Looks like they'll be coming after the medal ceremony.
:25:32. > :25:34.They were coming but they've been taken away again. They've gone back
:25:35. > :25:38.to where the majority of the British fans are, they are celebrating right
:25:39. > :25:41.in front of them at the moment. It's been the most wonderful night. To
:25:42. > :25:47.recapture the Great Britain took the lead but the Dutch engaged another
:25:48. > :25:50.gear which Great Britain haven't faced in this tournament before. In
:25:51. > :25:54.fairness, they struggled to cope. They haven't faced it as a Great
:25:55. > :25:57.Britain team but they faced it as an England team. The difference for me
:25:58. > :26:00.was the Dutch had all the possession, all the chances,
:26:01. > :26:04.couldn't score corners. Great Britain have four chances and scored
:26:05. > :26:09.three. A game plan executed to perfection almost. The one good
:26:10. > :26:12.thing Great Britain had in their corner was the best goalkeeper in
:26:13. > :26:17.the tournament, Maddie Hinch. It was one of the many good things. They
:26:18. > :26:21.were all exceptional. I believe Maddie Hinch is the best goalkeeper
:26:22. > :26:25.in the world, the best prepared, most agile, made some key says at
:26:26. > :26:32.the beginning. The strokes except them on the way. She saved a penalty
:26:33. > :26:36.from one of the best strikers in the world permits at the bar for Great
:26:37. > :26:39.Britain and took it on. You are the experts, you play at the highest
:26:40. > :26:43.level, you stumbled what it's like to play in pressure like this. When
:26:44. > :26:47.we got to the penalties, given how well Maddie had played in this
:26:48. > :26:51.tournament, how confident were you we would come out on top? Very,
:26:52. > :26:56.honestly very. The amount of homework she does is incredible. The
:26:57. > :26:59.Dutch changed two of their penalty takers from the semifinal and it
:27:00. > :27:04.didn't hinder her. She does something different every time. You
:27:05. > :27:07.never know what you are facing, she changes her position on the Star
:27:08. > :27:13.line, how quickly she comes out, how far she comes out, it's mental, it's
:27:14. > :27:17.a mind game, she thrives on it. It's a lesson for any goalkeepers
:27:18. > :27:21.watching tonight, to see the variety. Don't be predictable, the
:27:22. > :27:26.mobile, agile, do your homework and step into it with immense confidence
:27:27. > :27:32.in what you can do. The last Dutch penalty. Once again, this is where
:27:33. > :27:35.it hit the post. Maddie Hinch is the one making all the effort to push
:27:36. > :27:41.them in the wrong position. The winning penalty, the winning moment,
:27:42. > :27:47.I felt I needed to turn away. You were watching every second. I'm not
:27:48. > :27:54.sure I was at that moment. What pressure, what composure. How she
:27:55. > :27:59.played that I have no idea. To deliver that is mental strength
:28:00. > :28:03.beyond belief. That is key, isn't it, that has been the key. They've
:28:04. > :28:08.emphasise mental strength from the moment they arrived here in Rio to
:28:09. > :28:11.the end of tonight. For me the moment was Helen Richardson-Walsh
:28:12. > :28:14.stepping up to take a stroke from Sophie Bray, the entire crowd
:28:15. > :28:18.barring the Brits were booing her senseless and she put it in the
:28:19. > :28:21.bottom corner. You think, those are the moments that define medal
:28:22. > :28:27.matches. Hollie Webb had the composure and peace of mind to put
:28:28. > :28:30.the winning, but that, for me, everybody had missed until that
:28:31. > :28:35.point, she rolled it in, you could tell by her face, looking at that
:28:36. > :28:39.crowd, saying, come on then! I want to talk about the family that has
:28:40. > :28:43.been created under Danny Carey and Kate Richardson-Walsh, they are so
:28:44. > :28:47.tight knit. We talk about how significant the result is for the
:28:48. > :28:50.sport, but for women sporting Great Britain, as a team, I don't think
:28:51. > :28:55.I've seen a team as tight-knit as this. No, it's massive. They talk
:28:56. > :28:59.about the squad of 31, those players that aren't here have an immense
:29:00. > :29:04.pride in it as well because they've put this group of players to be the
:29:05. > :29:07.best they can be. It'll be tough when they go into the centralised
:29:08. > :29:11.programme, there will be players who have won Olympic gold, some won
:29:12. > :29:15.bronze, some bad girl, I want a piece of the action. All it does is
:29:16. > :29:20.raise the bar for British sport and both women's and men's hockey.
:29:21. > :29:25.Tonight, Simon, people at home watching. They will have sampled a
:29:26. > :29:30.little bit tonight. They will have sampled the whole gamut of what this
:29:31. > :29:33.sport can offer. Yeah, and this is about the number of people who go
:29:34. > :29:36.home who haven't picked up a hockey stick before, haven't played for a
:29:37. > :29:39.long time, the social media impact the girls have seen none of, they
:29:40. > :29:43.have no idea what they are going back into. It's been amazing, we
:29:44. > :29:46.followed it, friends getting in touch because of how well the girls
:29:47. > :29:49.have done. There are people who haven't touched a stick in 20 years
:29:50. > :29:52.going back to their clubs at the beginning of this season and
:29:53. > :29:54.hundreds of players, if not thousands, who will be inspired by
:29:55. > :30:01.what the British girls have delivered.
:30:02. > :30:26.match for amazing how they have that same attitude. They embrace the
:30:27. > :30:31.youngsters coming end. Helen said she would play for Great Britain for
:30:32. > :30:39.as long as she can and that is what I like. It is not a complacency, and
:30:40. > :30:43.Lily Owsley has come here and she must think, piece of cake.
:30:44. > :30:48.Everything she has touched has turned to gold. She scored the
:30:49. > :30:52.equaliser in the European Championships for England. Hopefully
:30:53. > :30:56.people at home have been watching and they have been inspired and if
:30:57. > :31:04.you have, this is how you can via the BBC sport website. Get Inspired
:31:05. > :31:07.will help you get active. It is on the BBC Sport website and you can
:31:08. > :31:12.find inspirational stories from people just like you as well as
:31:13. > :31:17.hints and tips and over 70 practical guides to get you to give something
:31:18. > :31:21.a go. There is an activity finder to help you find something to try and
:31:22. > :31:26.you can tell us how you are getting on and on Twitter and Facebook and
:31:27. > :31:37.maybe you can inspire someone else to give something a try. Now we are
:31:38. > :31:40.passing the bat on over to you. Get up, Get Inspired and get active. We
:31:41. > :31:45.will look at how this whole match unfolded, it has been incredible. It
:31:46. > :31:52.had everything. There was so much pressure that we had to soak up. The
:31:53. > :31:57.Dutch provided a whole new test for what Great Britain had faced, but
:31:58. > :32:03.for Spain were good, but the Dutch work quick and pacey and skilful,
:32:04. > :32:07.coming into the match, you said that you thought, if we scored the first
:32:08. > :32:14.goal, then we would win the match, did you say when the match in a
:32:15. > :32:20.penalty shoot out? Initially I said if we score first, we will win and
:32:21. > :32:25.then I was asked again and I said it would go to a shoot out. Yeah, if I
:32:26. > :32:33.was betting, I would probably be quite well up now. When you see the
:32:34. > :32:38.game unfold and you see the Dutch dominating possession and territory,
:32:39. > :32:46.you try and be positive in the commentary, but you get so absorbed.
:32:47. > :32:50.This was tense for a Friday night. A little bit of an understatement.
:32:51. > :33:00.This is the first goal scored by Great Britain. Fantastic build-up
:33:01. > :33:04.play by Sophie Bray. Initial save by Joyce Sombroek and Britain were
:33:05. > :33:09.first to the rebound and it trickles over the line. One way to get into
:33:10. > :33:14.the minds of the Dutch. We were dazzled by the skills from Sophie
:33:15. > :33:20.Bray but inevitably the Dutch struck back. They turned the ball over in
:33:21. > :33:25.midfield quite a lot. When they got those counterattack chances, they
:33:26. > :33:30.took them, they looked dangerous and there was a fantastic backhand, what
:33:31. > :33:39.a finish on the run. So many have been messed on Matt backhand. Not
:33:40. > :33:46.the traditional corner from Maartje Paumen. Amazingly, almost against
:33:47. > :33:51.the run of play, we equalised. The girls kept pushing and they had two
:33:52. > :33:55.and all of a sudden, they got to the point where they knew they could
:33:56. > :34:00.achieve something. The Dutch went up 3-2 and we were wondering if we
:34:01. > :34:05.would get an equaliser and we did. I was chuffed to see them pressing
:34:06. > :34:11.forward and you could see the relief on their faces. Another tab then
:34:12. > :34:17.that by Nicola White. How would you sum up what style of play we have
:34:18. > :34:22.produced tonight? The Dutch obviously were incisive and sharp
:34:23. > :34:27.and attacking, how would you say that we played? Controlled, we had
:34:28. > :34:31.believe, we had to sit back and defend, but it was structured, we
:34:32. > :34:37.tried not to get fractured, but we stay together as the team that
:34:38. > :34:42.delivered the unity. The other thing was the conditioning, another huge
:34:43. > :34:46.part in what has happened tonight, because Simon and I were looking and
:34:47. > :34:53.we could see how hard they were having to work to match the Dutch,
:34:54. > :34:59.so many players been stretched, but they dug it out. For me, them and
:35:00. > :35:03.the USA by the teams in the best physical condition and it is credit
:35:04. > :35:07.to the strength and conditioning coaches. One of the coaches is
:35:08. > :35:12.moving on to a different sport as of Monday, what a way for him to sign
:35:13. > :35:17.of his involvement with British hockey. Players want to get
:35:18. > :35:21.involved, but coaches will want to be a part of British hockey. I hope
:35:22. > :35:26.they have stolen his notebooks, they do not want to lose those skills. It
:35:27. > :35:33.came to fruition tonight, all the hard work and practice. The
:35:34. > :35:39.different number of skills that they did in training, different types of
:35:40. > :35:43.nutritional conversations, all sorts of particulars that make up that
:35:44. > :35:50.final athlete. It is so complex, you cannot turn up at an event in the
:35:51. > :35:53.Olympics, you do not turn up if you have not done unbelievable work,
:35:54. > :35:58.from the first thing you do in the morning to the last thing you do
:35:59. > :36:03.when you turn the lights off. Every day, each day, it does not matter
:36:04. > :36:08.what is in front of you, it is a routine, you cannot waste a day and
:36:09. > :36:14.they will start about when they get back home. That central programme
:36:15. > :36:19.has to deliver this all over again. What about the sacrifices they have
:36:20. > :36:23.had to make, not just on the pitch, we talked about how hard they had to
:36:24. > :36:29.work, a few of them have had to make sacrifices off the pitch. That is
:36:30. > :36:33.all part of being a centralised programme and they all appreciate
:36:34. > :36:37.and understand that if they do not deliver, there is a funding
:36:38. > :36:41.implication and it proves, we have been fortunate as a sport that we
:36:42. > :36:47.have been funded over a massive number of years and it has come to
:36:48. > :36:52.fruition in 2012 and 2016. Right now they will not see the sacrifices at
:36:53. > :36:59.all. It is unbelievable. I touched on the family aspect of it, I was
:37:00. > :37:02.reading an article today saying how team sport is so important for the
:37:03. > :37:06.development of youngsters and hopefully people tonight will have
:37:07. > :37:11.been watching and realise, I would love to be part of a team like this
:37:12. > :37:16.one. I am biased, I prefer team sport and have done since I was ten
:37:17. > :37:23.years old. There is a different dynamic. For me, team sport delivers
:37:24. > :37:28.so many different elements. The friendships that you build can stand
:37:29. > :37:34.for life in terms of trying to create some ideals to set you on
:37:35. > :37:40.your pathway, but is an incredible opportunity for people to get
:37:41. > :37:46.involved. Absolutely. We are shortly going to have the medal ceremony and
:37:47. > :37:56.I would imagine there might be the odd tear or two. Mel will head up to
:37:57. > :38:05.the commentary box. Thank you. Karen Brown is delivered tonight, 16
:38:06. > :38:13.members of each of their winning squad -- 48 medals. Gold and bronze
:38:14. > :38:21.medals were both won today. Here come the medal winners. The medal
:38:22. > :38:24.ceremony will take place on the pitch, the Dutch looking
:38:25. > :38:32.unsurprisingly a little solemn, champions in 2008 and again in 2012,
:38:33. > :38:40.silver medal in 2016 and it all came down to the harsh reality of a
:38:41. > :38:44.penalty shoot out. The Germans played their bronze medal match
:38:45. > :38:52.earlier today in the heat of the midday sun, defeating New Zealand by
:38:53. > :38:56.two goals to one. They have had an afternoon to celebrate and they have
:38:57. > :39:03.been here to watch the final unfold and all the drama that came with it.
:39:04. > :39:08.What a match. The Dutch so dominant but when it mattered most, Maddie
:39:09. > :39:15.Hinch was pretty much unstoppable, it started with hurt saving the
:39:16. > :39:20.penalty stroke from Maartje Paumen in the first quarter. Goalkeeping
:39:21. > :39:29.ability shone thereafter right up to the when it mattered most in the
:39:30. > :40:34.penalty shoot out. All the teams assembled for the presentations.
:40:35. > :40:43.We have three different medal presentations for the teams, one for
:40:44. > :40:47.the bronze medal team, one for the silver medal team and one for the
:40:48. > :40:58.gold medal winning team. We all know who that is now. Now the whole thing
:40:59. > :41:08.is repeated in English, this does take a while! Helen Richardson-Walsh
:41:09. > :41:15.in conversation with Susannah Townsend. That is the German
:41:16. > :41:24.captain, there is the Dutch captain. The Germans beating New Zealand for
:41:25. > :41:38.the bronze medal earlier today. Alex Danson on the left. And lead to her
:41:39. > :41:46.left. -- looking down Susannah Townsend is already in tears.
:41:47. > :41:52.Georgie Twigg took a whack on the lip, but returned to the heat of
:41:53. > :42:01.battle, clutching an ice pack over her mouth. Crista Cullen had to get
:42:02. > :42:04.stitched up in the semifinal. Eight stitches in her forehead. Now the
:42:05. > :42:12.whole thing is done in Brazil in, we have had it in French, which is the
:42:13. > :42:20.language of the Olympic movement was founded by a Frenchman when it
:42:21. > :42:25.started. France -- French remains the language of the Olympics,
:42:26. > :42:29.despite the fact it is not widely spoken here in Brazil. Portuguese is
:42:30. > :42:34.the mother tongue. All these dignitaries are introduced in
:42:35. > :42:41.Portuguese, then in English, then finally in French. I think we are
:42:42. > :42:50.through that stage now. Germany, the bronze medallists. Beaten by the
:42:51. > :42:53.Dutch in a penalty shoot out in the semifinal, returned to the field
:42:54. > :42:58.with renewed enthusiasm today. Defeated New Zealand. That was in
:42:59. > :43:30.the bronze medal play-off, 2-1. Maddie Hinch gets a bronze medal.
:43:31. > :43:40.Maddie Hinch. Hannah MacLeod next in line.
:43:41. > :43:57.She has had a pretty good tournament. You're watching the
:43:58. > :44:04.medal ceremony to celebrate Great Britain's gold medal in their hockey
:44:05. > :44:10.tournament. It was three all at full time and we went to all the tension
:44:11. > :44:21.of the penalty shoot out and there were endless misses and goalkeeping
:44:22. > :44:34.brilliance the Dutch penalty takers were shaken even before they set off
:44:35. > :44:40.for the girl. It came down to the winning strike from Hollie Webb of
:44:41. > :44:46.Great Britain. That was to seal the gold medal. On a momentous evening
:44:47. > :44:51.for hockey for British sport. The 24th gold medal for Great Britain so
:44:52. > :44:58.far. There will be many people watching tonight at their hockey
:44:59. > :45:04.clubs, so many to name, Canterbury will be watching on the big screen.
:45:05. > :45:09.I had an e-mail from my local hockey team, they had two players in the
:45:10. > :45:15.British court and the last time Great Britain won a gold, was 1988.
:45:16. > :45:22.As you say, it's all about the entire hockey family. Clubs are one
:45:23. > :45:25.of the reasons there are 16 players out there getting gold medals. They
:45:26. > :45:30.support the players from junior age groups right the way through to
:45:31. > :45:35.senior level. They support them, some of them with funding, some with
:45:36. > :45:38.expenses. The thing for me is pretty much every single player out there,
:45:39. > :45:42.every single player out there, knows what that means to them and gives
:45:43. > :45:45.back to their club as well. I'm sure that will continue when they take
:45:46. > :45:51.those gold medals into their clubs for the first time. The clubs will
:45:52. > :45:55.get a look at an Olympic gold medal which will in turn encourage further
:45:56. > :46:03.influx of youngsters to take up the game. Widely played in schools
:46:04. > :46:08.around the country. And the clubs will benefit from Great Britain's
:46:09. > :46:13.success this evening. Funding trickles down from the lottery and
:46:14. > :46:18.the associated sponsorship that comes with it. Funding is now
:46:19. > :46:27.assured for British hockey. Through the next four year Olympic cycle,
:46:28. > :46:31.until they meet again in Tokyo 2020. Japan's women were in the Olympic
:46:32. > :46:38.hockey tournament this year, put up a good fight against Great Britain
:46:39. > :46:42.in the pool match. Great Britain beating Japan eventually buy 2-0. A
:46:43. > :46:47.lot of other teams put more goals past the Japan team. Great Britain
:46:48. > :46:53.possibly at their least convincing during that pool game against Japan.
:46:54. > :46:56.Yeah, I think they did. At that moment in time they realised they
:46:57. > :47:00.had already qualified for the quarterfinals with the win against
:47:01. > :47:04.Argentina. It was something that was probably going to happen, it's not,
:47:05. > :47:10.at times, great viewing, it chose the expectations we as commentators,
:47:11. > :47:11.and as people back home, the expectation on these players. They
:47:12. > :47:22.pushed on from that moment on. Time for the Dutch to force a smile
:47:23. > :47:24.and celebrate their silver. For many of them to add to the gold they won
:47:25. > :47:36.in London four years ago. Tonight they were the dominant team
:47:37. > :47:41.against Great Britain throughout the second and third quarters. When
:47:42. > :47:50.Great Britain had a chance to score they made it count. Great
:47:51. > :47:52.goalkeeping. Joyce Sombroek made a lot of key saves. The 25-year-old
:47:53. > :48:05.Dutch goalkeeper. It's one of these peculiar
:48:06. > :48:09.situations where the bronze medallists are happier than the
:48:10. > :48:13.silver medallist. They are at this precise moment in time because they
:48:14. > :48:16.won their last game in an Olympics but I'm sure for the Dutch team when
:48:17. > :48:21.they get back to Holland and get time to reflect on the competition,
:48:22. > :48:24.they changed their coach after their loss to England in the European cup,
:48:25. > :48:28.so Alyson Annan hasn't had this group of players long. There are a
:48:29. > :48:31.few of them who will retire from the Dutch team so there will be some
:48:32. > :48:37.fresh faces coming into this side. But they are still by world ranking
:48:38. > :48:40.state is the best team in the world. They are that for a reason. They've
:48:41. > :48:44.always set the bar for other nations. When you beat them it
:48:45. > :48:50.really does feel you've been up against it. You feel probably more
:48:51. > :48:54.delighted and excited than beating any other nation. They'll be
:48:55. > :48:56.disappointed with silver, of course they will, but it motivates them to
:48:57. > :49:08.win gold next time. Van Maasakker, one of their key
:49:09. > :49:21.players. Alongside her, the captain, the 30-year-old marcher Plowman. --
:49:22. > :49:28.Maartje Paumen. She messed a penalty stroke in the first quarter. Saved
:49:29. > :49:34.by Maddie Hinch. Naomi van As is retiring after tonight. She had a
:49:35. > :49:40.really brilliant game. She was absolutely everywhere, every minute
:49:41. > :49:45.of the 60. She certainly saved her best till last. Cause Great Britain
:49:46. > :49:49.a number of problems. It'll be a shame to see her go, she's been a
:49:50. > :49:52.fantastic advert for the sport over the years, world Player of the Year
:49:53. > :50:00.the number of times. I've no doubt there is a bright future for her
