:00:00. > :00:14.violations. -- for Australia. Nikola Mirotic got over it.
:00:15. > :00:25.Spain wanting to fast break. Mirotic was down underneath and then Gasol
:00:26. > :00:30.joins the attack. Mirotic with the offensive rebound. Tries for Gasol,
:00:31. > :00:36.that will be a backcourt violation. The first turnover is for Spain, it
:00:37. > :00:40.will go to Australia. It's not quite the explosive start that Serbia made
:00:41. > :00:44.against Australia and ran out to a massive lead early one. But Spain
:00:45. > :00:47.are certainly stopping the Australians from playing the game
:00:48. > :00:51.that they want to play. The outside tuning is not working, they need to
:00:52. > :00:55.find solutions. Patty Mills has not got into the game. This is again the
:00:56. > :01:07.test for Australia. How do they recover? Mirotic is out. Waiting for
:01:08. > :01:18.Rudy Fernandez to take more outside shots. A brilliant move from David
:01:19. > :01:29.Anderson. He is 36 but still a sensational player. There is Rudy
:01:30. > :01:36.Fernandez with a foul on Ingles, bending over backwards trying not to
:01:37. > :01:48.fall. That was brilliant stuff to make Ingles move and get the contact
:01:49. > :02:03.of him. Rudy Fernandez goes to the line for two.
:02:04. > :02:18.Spain lead by seven with two minutes to play in the 1st quarter. Reyes
:02:19. > :02:24.gives a bump in return. Now they have the mismatch. Put it out to
:02:25. > :02:28.Ingles for two. At least that was better from Australia. They found
:02:29. > :02:33.the open shot. We shot didn't go down, but at least that was better.
:02:34. > :02:48.Spain loses the rebound. Ingles picks it up. Broekhoff goes to the
:02:49. > :03:04.hoop. Bring wanted to -- Gasol had stepped out.
:03:05. > :03:11.The foul was: Anderson for pushing Reyes from behind. Spain will come
:03:12. > :03:22.right back down to the other side and will shoot the foul. Hernangomez
:03:23. > :03:28.comes into the game. Ingles... They're trying to figure out what
:03:29. > :03:33.was given there. Australia got the basket, but the foul was called
:03:34. > :03:37.after the basket. I see now. Then the penalty fell situation, that is
:03:38. > :03:43.to macro shots on the line. It's very confusing. -- penalty foul
:03:44. > :03:54.situation. -- that is two shots on the line. Even when Australia get
:03:55. > :04:05.the basket, they get the penalty. Ingles in the corner. Fernandez has
:04:06. > :04:15.got a hand on it, and there is a foul inside. Hernangomez put his
:04:16. > :04:22.hand up, but it is an Reyes. I think Hernangomez was taking one for the
:04:23. > :04:25.team, as it were, protecting Reyes. It's encouraging that Australia are
:04:26. > :04:30.now moving Spain around offensively and finding more options in passing
:04:31. > :04:36.game. Claver has come into the game for Spain for Gasol. Gasol gets his
:04:37. > :04:40.first break with a minute and a half to go. You see this a lot with
:04:41. > :04:46.starting players, they get a break with a minute or a half less. You
:04:47. > :04:53.see Rodriguez again with that left-hander grabbing the jersey as
:04:54. > :05:06.he runs past, dribbling. Offensive foul given.
:05:07. > :05:19.He seemed to be trying to provide the screen. A relatively soft foul.
:05:20. > :05:28.Mills froze it up for Baynes. Baynes couldn't control it. The foul is on
:05:29. > :05:31.Baynes. So interesting, the difference in confidence. Australia
:05:32. > :05:36.were making those of their often in the group stage. Right now, it's
:05:37. > :05:43.just not going their way. That's just unfortunate, coming down.
:05:44. > :05:47.Again, if you fall backwards you have a better chance of drawing
:05:48. > :05:51.that. Baynes, that was his third. He comes out. Sorry, it's only his
:05:52. > :05:56.second but he comes out anyway. Brock Motum will come in for the
:05:57. > :06:08.last minute of the quarter. Felipe Reyes is an excellent foul shooter
:06:09. > :06:15.for a big man. I'm sorry I even said it! The curse is alive and well.
:06:16. > :06:20.Even vote Spain are still in the lead, Australia seem to have learned
:06:21. > :06:23.some lessons from Serbian defeat. -- even though Spain. They're starting
:06:24. > :06:29.to find the rhythm and the way to the basket. If I had a computer, I
:06:30. > :06:34.would check the last time Felipe Reyes Mr two shots in a row. Kevin
:06:35. > :06:51.Lisch is in for Australia. -- Felipe Reyes missed two shots. Lisch comes
:06:52. > :07:00.down. There is contact, but no follow. Mills with the three. If
:07:01. > :07:06.they two. 20-17. Brilliant play by Patty Mills. That gives Australia
:07:07. > :07:13.such a great advantage. They're there from the outside. Australia
:07:14. > :07:20.can work for the last shot with ten seconds on the clock. Mills splits,
:07:21. > :07:25.drives, kicks it back out to know one and the ball goes over to Spain
:07:26. > :07:29.with 4.5 on the clock. I can only been published in that position, but
:07:30. > :07:37.Lisch was moving as Mills drove through. -- I can only think of
:07:38. > :07:44.Lisch in that position. Reyes tries to tip. A kind of sloppy 1st quarter
:07:45. > :07:47.I think overall. Spain settling down and getting the outside shooting
:07:48. > :07:53.that makes all the difference here in the 1st quarter. Spain 23-17
:07:54. > :07:58.Australia. Let's take a look at the statistics on the board and the if
:07:59. > :08:01.that's true. Spain has three three pointers, Australia only one. Spain
:08:02. > :08:30.are shooting better from the floor. Spain, I'm not sure, I was looking
:08:31. > :08:39.to say that Spain had thrown away and therefore -- but Spain keep
:08:40. > :08:43.possession. Hernangomez and Navarro have the mismatch on the smaller
:08:44. > :08:54.man, he goes up over Lisch and it is captained by Reyes. Well read by
:08:55. > :08:56.Reyes. He outjumped everyone. Australia basically have their
:08:57. > :09:02.second unit in, apart from Dellavedova. He sat at a fair bit in
:09:03. > :09:08.the 1st quarter as well, Dellavedova. Keep his head down for
:09:09. > :09:16.the drive, stops for the jump and hits it. 25-19. I think you did as
:09:17. > :09:22.best as he could against Serbia, but he was a key player but didn't
:09:23. > :09:26.really fight for Australia. You saw the referee's only reaction to that
:09:27. > :09:30.was to start counting him for seconds Reyes was done on the
:09:31. > :09:36.ground. The referee was counting three seconds while he lay there in
:09:37. > :09:40.the paint. Missed by Spain. That they push for a Navarro. A very
:09:41. > :09:45.unsubtle one right in front of the umpire. Spain has their second unit
:09:46. > :09:50.out now. It is the second five playing against four of Australia's
:09:51. > :09:57.second five. I don't even understand that. It almost seemed like out of
:09:58. > :10:05.frustration. The first-team foul of the quarter. A penalty situation
:10:06. > :10:14.works quarter by quarter. Now it is Motum who is down in the paint.
:10:15. > :10:19.Anderson gets the jumper, 25-21. Such a good player. Ex-NBA. He plays
:10:20. > :10:30.in the Euroleague. He knows how to play these type of games. One of the
:10:31. > :10:39.-- he won the championship in France last season. Motum steps back for
:10:40. > :10:43.three. Hernangomez why therefore the rebound and laid it back in. This is
:10:44. > :10:51.a promising young player. To come in for Gasol. Anderson, the reason he
:10:52. > :10:57.lost double as he looked in the corner. Rodriguez misses the way up.
:10:58. > :11:03.Dellavedova comes down and Australia have numbers. Broekhoff into the
:11:04. > :11:08.corner to Lisch, but he doesn't take the shot and they will be set now.
:11:09. > :11:15.He runs into Reyes. Anderson for free. Motum with the offensive
:11:16. > :11:25.rebound. Better stuff on the board from Australia. 27-23. That was a
:11:26. > :11:33.good lead, I think Spain did well not to take the shot. Is out. Now
:11:34. > :11:39.they move in. -- Claver is out, now they move in. Rodriguez can race, he
:11:40. > :11:46.is outside. And yet it is three, it is 30-23. The big men are hitting
:11:47. > :11:52.the threes for Spain. I think both teams are getting into gear now,
:11:53. > :11:55.this is really good. A 7-point lead and a 6-point disparity in 3-point
:11:56. > :12:05.baskets. You can draw your own conclusion. Claver is now a
:12:06. > :12:15.crosscourt to Navarro for three. He climbs the back door and goes over
:12:16. > :12:20.to Australia. Merit it looks like he's coming back in. Hernangomez had
:12:21. > :12:23.a couple of very good minutes. Andrew Bogut is coming in for
:12:24. > :12:27.Australia as both teams make substitutions. The pace is really
:12:28. > :12:31.rushing in this deck and quarter. There has already been three and a
:12:32. > :12:43.half minutes played. -- in this 2nd quarter. Navarro puts Spain up by
:12:44. > :12:52.nine. Australia want a time-out. Spain 32-23 Australia. 6.24 to play
:12:53. > :12:57.in the 2nd quarter. The scoreboard updates slower than my brain does.
:12:58. > :13:03.That is pretty slow right now! Spain have stepped it up. Australia have
:13:04. > :13:07.improved early on but Spain have been consistent and their bench is
:13:08. > :13:12.really strong. Watching that replay, Broekhoff was very lucky. There was
:13:13. > :13:18.a lot of fouls earlier on and it's great that the game has the same
:13:19. > :13:32.momentum. To be honest, I would rather see fouls not given than the
:13:33. > :13:50.soft fouls given. -- van CE -- than see soft fouls given.
:13:51. > :13:59.Just as Australia narrowed the margin to three, Spain come down and
:14:00. > :14:04.raise it back up to nine. The Spanish fans have had great fun. But
:14:05. > :14:09.then group has been in the same seats for every Spanish game! --
:14:10. > :14:20.that same group. They are like the court jesters. That just like them.
:14:21. > :14:26.-- they are dressed like them. Bogut is in for Australia, as is Mills.
:14:27. > :14:32.Mills Mrs B three. Rubio is in for Spain. Mirotic is back in for Spain.
:14:33. > :14:43.Gasol is back in for Spain. Claver and Navarro remain in.
:14:44. > :14:50.Rubio lost double on his drive. Mills picked it up. Mills going to
:14:51. > :14:55.the hoop, and has a foul before he can pass it to Broekhoff who takes
:14:56. > :14:58.the shooting practice. It is so difficult with Rubio. He is such a
:14:59. > :15:03.talent. You've got to do the basics right. He tries to do the
:15:04. > :15:06.spectacular. If you're losing on a simple dribble like that and you get
:15:07. > :15:11.the ball stolen from you, it's just not going to work at the top level.
:15:12. > :15:19.It wasn't really a steal, he just lost the ball and Mills picked it
:15:20. > :15:37.up. Ingles is back in for Australia. Broekhoff hits victory. 32-26.
:15:38. > :15:59.That was a past two Patty Mills. We are at the halfway point of the
:16:00. > :16:03.second quarter. Patty Mills is getting going now. He struggled
:16:04. > :16:10.earlier and against Serbia, but he is back to his best. And Gasol hits
:16:11. > :16:21.the three. If you're going to get the big men, there are going to kill
:16:22. > :16:30.you. A ten point lead for Spain. He knows when he can he hits it into
:16:31. > :16:40.Aron Baynes. They have to stop the shooting from
:16:41. > :16:59.the outside. The story of this half is turnovers
:17:00. > :17:10.and threes. It is like a wrestling match. Gasol drops it in. Aron
:17:11. > :17:33.Baynes pulled out to cover Nikola Mirotic.
:17:34. > :17:45.Two seconds on the shot clock, with a foul. That was on Nikola Mirotic.
:17:46. > :17:52.That was great stuff, just beating Aron Baynes.
:17:53. > :18:09.Patty Mills tried to give a foul at the not get it, he wanted to slow
:18:10. > :18:23.them down. 3.5 to play. The Americans talk about how the
:18:24. > :18:26.United States NBA players are not used to playing this kind of
:18:27. > :18:31.basketball, it is a different kind, and the Australians are in the same
:18:32. > :18:34.position. They have the most NBA players outside the United States. I
:18:35. > :18:38.wonder if they are not used to playing in this type of game because
:18:39. > :18:45.the Spanish Serbians have a problem that they have not been able to
:18:46. > :18:51.solve. Nikola Mirotic picked up his fourth foul. But he stays in. It is
:18:52. > :19:07.Navarro that goes to the bench. He Nikola Mirotic picked up only his
:19:08. > :19:21.second, excuse me. But it is the 15th foul for Spain.
:19:22. > :19:27.So much hope for Australia going into this, and when they got through
:19:28. > :19:33.to the group stage there was belief that they could go through to the
:19:34. > :19:39.final, but although Australian basketball has improved
:19:40. > :19:43.dramatically, they are not maybe at that level of Spain yet, who have
:19:44. > :19:52.been the real contenders to the United States for the gold medal.
:19:53. > :19:59.Three minutes to play. Gasol was simply walking backwards, and loses
:20:00. > :20:18.it when Joe Ingles came. The rebound was cleared by Nikola
:20:19. > :20:23.Mirotic. Everything leading up to that shot was everything we have
:20:24. > :20:25.seen from Australia in these games. Joe Ingles tried to take that away,
:20:26. > :20:44.he will get the foul. Nikola Mirotic diving out, you get
:20:45. > :20:55.the attention that way. He hit him with the offhand. Not enough to
:20:56. > :21:07.cause the player to follow her. The shooting has been superb from Spain.
:21:08. > :21:19.The rebound for Felipe Reyes, for Spain. They have let some
:21:20. > :21:25.opportunities call. Victor Clark there was open, and he misses this
:21:26. > :21:27.one. I do not know what Gasol is complaining about, he was the one
:21:28. > :21:49.over Joe Ingles's back. 33-40! That is one of the stranger
:21:50. > :22:10.sequences we have seen. In the end, good assistance from Australia.
:22:11. > :22:19.Just looking down quickly, there are four Australians who have played in
:22:20. > :22:33.Spain. At various times. Including Joe Ingles, who had four years in
:22:34. > :22:38.Barcelona. Some of the players did not get the International -- NBA
:22:39. > :22:44.experience, which may be affecting them. It should not be an excuse.
:22:45. > :22:54.Australia is starting to get back into it. You would argue that there
:22:55. > :23:10.has not been any consistency in the Australian game in the first half.
:23:11. > :23:12.Gasol and marrow titch -- Nikola Mirotic with the most points between
:23:13. > :23:33.them. Girl-macro isn't that sweet! Isn't
:23:34. > :23:45.-- isn't that sweet! Everyone is enjoying themselves. Andrew Bogut
:23:46. > :23:49.has not dominated as he did in the past. I think Matthew Dellavedova is
:23:50. > :24:06.getting a bit tired. The Australians have not been as
:24:07. > :24:18.effective as they were earlier. Joe Ingles was waiting. Patty Mills will
:24:19. > :24:26.start it again for Australia. David Andersen hit three. The Australian
:24:27. > :24:32.big man gets back. It could well be David Andersen's last game at the
:24:33. > :24:42.Olympics, sold he is putting on a show. And it is a foul for the ball.
:24:43. > :24:51.-- off the ball. Bogut is always in the thick of the action. The whistle
:24:52. > :25:01.had already gone by the time he rugby tackled. The foul is on Bogut,
:25:02. > :25:16.that is his third. Felipe Reyes will move to the line.
:25:17. > :25:26.And think Sergio Llull is clutching his face. There is booing from the
:25:27. > :25:39.Spanish section. That is a pretty good shot. David
:25:40. > :25:45.Andersen was a little lucky. I do not think that was unintentional at
:25:46. > :25:53.all. You can see why the Spanish crowd are booing. You're not allowed
:25:54. > :26:00.to swing your elbows at other players. You can see the frustration
:26:01. > :26:01.creeping in for David Andersen. Australia are back within four
:26:02. > :26:41.points. David Andersen misses the three. The
:26:42. > :26:47.foul was called late. I think David Andersen will go to the line. He was
:26:48. > :26:56.knocked over after the shot. He may have hurt his elbowing elbow! That
:26:57. > :27:04.was the same one he used earlier! There is body contact. You can see
:27:05. > :27:12.Gasol's reaction. There was contact, which is the point. If you contact
:27:13. > :27:19.wild they are in the air, that will be a foul most times.
:27:20. > :27:27.Spain were cruising there, but David Andersen is having a good game, 12
:27:28. > :27:34.points now for him. He could reduce this deficit to one. You should not
:27:35. > :27:40.have said that. This commentary position has a certain power over
:27:41. > :27:52.foul shooting! We get contradicted any time we dear. It is a 2-point
:27:53. > :28:01.game. Three seconds to go. Spain taking time out. What a comeback
:28:02. > :28:06.from Australia. They are shooting Spain 21-17 in this second quarter.
:28:07. > :28:11.It has not been consistently great, but they are getting into a rhythm.
:28:12. > :28:15.At the risk of doing my half-time wrap-up, I would say Spain have to
:28:16. > :28:21.be frustrated. They outplayed them, but only have a 2-point lead at the
:28:22. > :28:25.moment. Australia have to be satisfied. They did not come out
:28:26. > :28:33.playing well, but they are still in the game.
:28:34. > :28:41.Get into it, wrestle him, get under his likes, whatever!
:28:42. > :28:47.LAUGHTER There is nothing much we can add to that!
:28:48. > :28:52.They are very casual people, they do not mind speaking their mind! This
:28:53. > :29:02.could be the last Olympic Games match for Gasol as well. David
:29:03. > :29:05.Andersen with the three. He missed the second three. Look at the
:29:06. > :29:13.contact. People do not realise how much of a contact sport Basketball
:29:14. > :29:16.Arena is. Gasol has a massive scratch on his back. In the men and
:29:17. > :29:28.women it has really physical. Aggressive basketball.
:29:29. > :29:35.That is how the first half will end. I just summarised it, Australia
:29:36. > :29:40.outplayed for most of the first half, and I think they would admit
:29:41. > :29:43.it. They are only two points behind Spain, who are frustrated that they
:29:44. > :29:49.do not have a big advantage on what was for most part I did half.
:29:50. > :29:52.Australia will be pleased going into the locker room because they have
:29:53. > :29:55.come back well, kept up the fight, and they have a real shot. Let us
:29:56. > :30:05.take another look. The shooting has balanced out a
:30:06. > :30:11.little bit. Spain has a two point lead. Australia have grabbed more
:30:12. > :30:17.rebound, partly because they missed so many shots early. At the half,
:30:18. > :30:26.the Kangaroo has punched its way back into the game. It is Spain
:30:27. > :30:36.40-38 Australia. STUDIO: world and to Spain. -- well
:30:37. > :30:40.done to Spain. Australia are still in with a big shout. We are at the
:30:41. > :30:46.Olympic Park. It is positively brightening up. Just behind me is
:30:47. > :30:50.the lake. Around me people are now beginning to flood the Olympic Park.
:30:51. > :30:55.It is quite a nice scene as we build up to the last day of sporting
:30:56. > :31:01.events. Basketball made its Olympic debut back in 1904. This year, golf
:31:02. > :31:05.returned after a century's absence. And Rugby sevens made its Olympic
:31:06. > :31:10.debut. In four years' time, another sport will be appearing for the
:31:11. > :31:13.first time. It's not one of Britain is particularly associated with, but
:31:14. > :31:20.here in Brazil they love their surfing.
:31:21. > :31:26.On a weekday morning around 8am, I would usually be on a train, nose
:31:27. > :31:29.buried in a newspaper trying to avoid eye contact. But if I was
:31:30. > :31:44.Brazilian, I would be here! Do you surf every day? Every day.
:31:45. > :31:49.Surfing is my life. Every morning I take my board and come to surf. It
:31:50. > :32:00.is very good. This place is very beautiful, too.
:32:01. > :32:06.How much do cariocas love to surf? All the people love to surf. Old,
:32:07. > :32:09.young, everybody. When you're on your surfboard and
:32:10. > :32:14.you're on the wave and it's pushing you along, how do you feel? For me,
:32:15. > :32:24.it's the best sensation in the world. Because you are free, you're
:32:25. > :32:28.thinking nothing, just to have fun. Every time somebody says I would
:32:29. > :32:35.love to know how to surf I say, just go and do it because it's awesome.
:32:36. > :32:42.When you ride a good wave, man, you just put a smile on your own face.
:32:43. > :32:50.Do you think it's a sport? Yes, I've thought this for a long time.
:32:51. > :32:58.Surfing belongs in the Olympics. I think it is something awesome for
:32:59. > :33:12.the sport. We expanding. -- where expanding the border of the sport.
:33:13. > :33:20.We are not doing it in a very good way today. He thinks that surfing in
:33:21. > :33:26.the Olympics is going to catch everybody's attention. How do you
:33:27. > :33:34.think Brazil will do in the Olympics in four years' time?
:33:35. > :33:42.I think Brazil will be one of the better.
:33:43. > :33:49.I'd love to be able to serve, but unfortunately I can't. But it does
:33:50. > :33:53.look gorgeous. Here in Brazil it's not just all about sand, sea and
:33:54. > :33:55.surfing. There are rather more troubled areas. Darren Campbell has
:33:56. > :34:20.been to visit one of the favelas. Today I've come to a safe area in
:34:21. > :34:23.the favela. Welcome. This is 11 different communities. The kids that
:34:24. > :34:28.we work with are facing issues of poverty, family breakdown. They're
:34:29. > :34:32.really on job opportunities for their families. It is a very poor
:34:33. > :34:37.part of town and also one of the most dangerous parts of town. This
:34:38. > :34:39.is an area that is classified which means there are police here. They
:34:40. > :34:50.fight with the local drug traffickers. Because you are on the
:34:51. > :34:56.hill, you can hear the gunfire. There can be automatic gunfire and
:34:57. > :35:01.the kids just continue to play. We needed a place where the police and
:35:02. > :35:02.traffickers agreed not to fight, so we created a safe space for kids to
:35:03. > :35:19.come and play football. This is one of our coaches at the
:35:20. > :35:24.Safe Space programme. Have you seen a change in the people who come
:35:25. > :35:29.here? They're not on the street, fighting. The reality is that these
:35:30. > :35:32.are the brothers and sisters of the traffickers. The traffickers grow up
:35:33. > :35:36.in the community. Working with them is important so that they are not
:35:37. > :35:39.trafficking drugs or picking up a gun. Today we have a very special
:35:40. > :35:54.guest. His name is Darren Campbell. People told me that kids like me do
:35:55. > :35:58.not win Olympic gold medals. For me to win the gold medal, it just... It
:35:59. > :36:09.proved a lot of people wrong. That's why I believe in these guys.
:36:10. > :36:16.Why do you enjoy coming here, Eric? I like to come here because it's a
:36:17. > :36:20.really nice place to play. If anything happens it is near my
:36:21. > :36:31.house. I can just go home really quickly.
:36:32. > :36:35.Do you feel safe when you hear? Yes. How do these guys feel about the
:36:36. > :36:39.Olympics being just that? I don't really like the Olympics very much
:36:40. > :36:43.because in Brazil we are in the middle of a crisis. But I do like to
:36:44. > :36:47.support the athletes because it is their dream. I think the Gulf and
:36:48. > :36:51.judo with happy. Not just because she won the medal for Brazil but
:36:52. > :36:58.because she showed that someone from the favela can please Brazil. -- the
:36:59. > :37:02.girl who won the judo. We are about setting these kids on their right
:37:03. > :37:08.path. The Olympics is fantastic for that, it gives them a goal and a
:37:09. > :37:12.dream. Sport really does have the power to change lives. You can see
:37:13. > :37:16.how this safe area really does give these kids the opportunity to feel a
:37:17. > :37:20.part of something, respect something, but the values that sport
:37:21. > :37:25.gives. For me, that is what Olympic legacy should be about.
:37:26. > :37:30.Never underestimate the power of sport to insert via. Hopefully some
:37:31. > :37:34.of those young children will be inspired by what they've seen at the
:37:35. > :37:38.Rio Olympics. A reminder of what is happening on BBC One. The final
:37:39. > :37:43.discipline in the sport of cycling, the men's mountain biking is
:37:44. > :37:51.currently taking place at the moment. Rapid descent, steep climbs.
:37:52. > :37:55.An adrenaline rush to say the least. But we are heading back to the
:37:56. > :37:59.basketball for the bronze medal match. Australia and Spain are
:38:00. > :38:06.currently locked in battle at the moment. Spain, silver medallist last
:38:07. > :38:18.time in London, currently leading 40-38 as we rejoin the action in the
:38:19. > :38:24.3rd quarter. COMMENTATOR: Dellavedova is back on
:38:25. > :38:31.for the Australians. A typical starting five, the all NBA team.
:38:32. > :38:47.Mirotic has just stepped out there. The Australian coach had a problem
:38:48. > :38:51.to solve against Serbia, now he has got it a game against Spain. But
:38:52. > :38:54.they seem to be working their way out. The passing game has not been
:38:55. > :38:59.quite as effective as it was in the group stages of the early matches
:39:00. > :39:07.for the Australians. But some of the shooting from David Anderson is now
:39:08. > :39:16.starting to work. Gasol getting the first points of the 3rd quarter to
:39:17. > :39:24.extend Spain's lead. 15.4 Pau Gasol. That could be his last match in the
:39:25. > :39:33.Olympic Games. -- 15 points for Pau Gasol. Mills for three, and gets it
:39:34. > :39:34.to go down. Australia are now up by one point. Patty Mills has really
:39:35. > :39:59.stepped it up. Gasol missing. That's a turnover for
:40:00. > :40:16.Spain. That is a turnover at both ends! Ingles up top.
:40:17. > :40:24.Dellavedova with the runner. It is and Australia are in the lead,
:40:25. > :40:34.43-42. Almost two minutes gone in the 1st quarter. What a turnaround
:40:35. > :40:39.for Australia. They were behind in the first half. It is going
:40:40. > :40:46.Australia's we now. Gasol lost that one. It came to Rubio. That'll be a
:40:47. > :40:53.foul on Bogut. What a break for Spain. That is what Ricky Rubio is
:40:54. > :41:07.capable of. That was a very difficult attempts to make. As the
:41:08. > :41:11.colder on, who has been for much -- has been reduced from much of this
:41:12. > :41:17.match to the lead cheerleader on the bench. -- Calderon has been reduced.
:41:18. > :41:23.What a blow for Australia, Bogart has been fouled. Danes 's house to
:41:24. > :41:29.play more and Anderson who is better outside than inside has really got
:41:30. > :41:44.to step up the game. -- Baynes, who hast to play more.
:41:45. > :41:51.Ricky Rubio trying to get through Baynes. We saw that arms locked.
:41:52. > :42:00.They both turned around to the officials for a foul. There is a
:42:01. > :42:05.great pass. Tied at 45. Good timing for mills to avoid the outstretched
:42:06. > :42:14.Gasol. 15 points now for Patty Mills, having good game.
:42:15. > :42:28.Gasol slams it in, 47-45 for Spain. Baynes is now inside. He covers for
:42:29. > :42:33.Australia, that is what they need. James misses with the left-handed
:42:34. > :42:41.hook. Mirotic took the rebound to Rubio. Mills takes the baseline,
:42:42. > :42:47.kick it out. Anderson with the rebound. We haven't seen Rubio do
:42:48. > :42:55.enough but at the Olympic Games. That really adds something to the
:42:56. > :43:00.Spanish offence. He swung around Llull. Ingles had to put that it
:43:01. > :43:04.went desperately close angle. That is using the board. I think he
:43:05. > :43:22.touched every part of it before it went in. Anderson wants the court
:43:23. > :43:26.white. -- wiped. Watch this, Ingles got himself weigh in. He still had a
:43:27. > :43:33.left-hander outside the rim and was able to put it out off the top of
:43:34. > :43:39.the glass. He gets the dead fall. Great fingers for Ingles. Two
:43:40. > :43:45.spectacular layouts, Rubio at one end, Ingles at the other. Tied at
:43:46. > :43:53.47. 6.5 minutes to play in the 3rd quarter. Baynes lying on the ground
:43:54. > :44:00.as he went up with Gasol. Gasol just was higher. Gasol has done it all.
:44:01. > :44:05.He has won it all, but he still wants this bronze medal. Look how
:44:06. > :44:12.fired up he was. He was so excited. Look at slam dunk. Mills hits 49.
:44:13. > :44:21.You are here to win, that is why you keep score. Absolutely, Patty Mills
:44:22. > :44:33.did a great job. Ingles with the rebound. Baynes misses the lay-up.
:44:34. > :44:39.Now there will be a technical and Baynes. We saw a game when there was
:44:40. > :44:47.about five technicals for six or something. Many of them were for the
:44:48. > :44:51.referee. You know the rules, that's the way it goes. You can't let your
:44:52. > :45:01.frustration get the better of you. There is the second to Paul Gasol.
:45:02. > :45:04.Yelling as it hits in. You don't put the ball over the BAFTA,
:45:05. > :45:07.necessarily. You put it where the player can get a bit, and that's
:45:08. > :45:13.exactly what he did. -- over the basket. Those two can combine so
:45:14. > :45:19.well. Spain have had enough of that, did Billy against the United States.
:45:20. > :45:38.-- particularly against the United States.
:45:39. > :45:55.Rudy Fernandez lays it on. Joe Ingles comes up for Australia.
:45:56. > :46:03.Patty Mills gets the foul. Tied at 51. Patty Mills will go to the free
:46:04. > :46:07.throw line. He has had a pretty good Olympic Games. It was tough for him
:46:08. > :46:17.against Serbia, but he has bounced back superbly. Brilliant stuff.
:46:18. > :46:31.And before Rudy Fernandez came off the ground, he was already looking
:46:32. > :46:40.to the referee. Brock Motum is being recalled for the foul.
:46:41. > :46:50.Unsportsmanlike foul. He and Gasol had their arms wrapped up. Just a
:46:51. > :46:54.foul. No, they gave a technical foul, you are absolutely right. And
:46:55. > :47:01.Gasol Mrs. They have had two and missed them both. It is
:47:02. > :47:06.unsportsmanlike, that is why it is two shots at the line. That is a
:47:07. > :47:12.difficult one. But he made the third. Australia were in the lead
:47:13. > :47:18.less than a second. That was called as soon as they got the shot. Given
:47:19. > :47:25.how often players have interlinked arms, it is difficult to tell who is
:47:26. > :47:26.doing what. Giving an unsportsmanlike in a situation like
:47:27. > :47:43.that is a tough call. Brock Motum Mrs. A great pass by him
:47:44. > :48:03.before. Brock Motum blocked it twice. Then
:48:04. > :48:08.it was tipped in. What brilliant defence.
:48:09. > :48:22.Brock Motum again. Tied again. Brock Motum is deputising brilliantly. A
:48:23. > :48:25.couple of block shots. Australia are right in this. It looked such for
:48:26. > :48:36.this early, but they are now matching Spain.
:48:37. > :48:43.This is top stuff from both teams. What basketball being played at both
:48:44. > :48:50.ends of the court. Rudy Fernandez with the triple. A foul might have
:48:51. > :48:59.been called again. It is another technical. This may be a make up.
:49:00. > :49:09.Rudy Fernandez with the shot. He is claiming he got contact. If that was
:49:10. > :49:13.the technical for complaining... They have got the same. They are
:49:14. > :49:22.applying it as they saw it. That is how it went. Part of the logic is...
:49:23. > :49:27.Look at them lining up! You can sort of complaint quickly at the referee
:49:28. > :49:33.at the time, but if you make a point of it, that is why you get the
:49:34. > :49:40.technical foul, you're calling attention to it. Patty Mills puts it
:49:41. > :49:43.in the net. We're tied again. 23 points for Patty Mills. What a game.
:49:44. > :49:59.We're not even into the fourth quarter. Nikola Mirotic for three.
:50:00. > :50:03.He is -- that is his game. Australia down by one.
:50:04. > :50:12.Watch his left arm as he moves past Kevin Lisch. He doesn't move past,
:50:13. > :50:31.so we didn't see it. Tipped away by Brock Motum. Was that
:50:32. > :50:47.a pass? It I think you lobbed it. -- he lobbed it. David Andersen missed.
:50:48. > :50:58.Sergio Llull. Spain lead by three, with two minutes 22 play.
:50:59. > :51:11.This is sensational. Great stuff. Joe Ingles misses the three. He goes
:51:12. > :51:21.down, the foul will be on David Andersen. What a contest, intense,
:51:22. > :51:27.quick, great shooting and offending, passing is fantastic. These are two
:51:28. > :51:33.really great sides. 15th foul for Australia. I think Gasol will go to
:51:34. > :51:43.the line. Once again it is the locked arms that bring the foul.
:51:44. > :51:49.Great stuff from Sergio Llull. That is the Michael Jordan pulls in the
:51:50. > :52:41.still photographs. -- pose. Brock Motum put it in. 1.5 play. He
:52:42. > :52:43.has been fantastic. He has filled the big shoes of Bogut, and has done
:52:44. > :52:53.a good job of it. Sergio Rodrigeuz holding back David
:52:54. > :53:20.Andersen. One minute to play. They are passing up threes. Sergio
:53:21. > :53:28.Rodrigeuz lost the ball, and Brock Motum got it away. Sergio Rodrigeuz
:53:29. > :53:39.missed as well. He was almost fighting with Matthew Dellavedova to
:53:40. > :53:44.get the rebound. Patty Mills was held by Navarro. A frantic
:53:45. > :53:52.third-quarter. Both teams have had the best quarters so far, scoring
:53:53. > :53:56.wise. Gasol still contributing from inside. Patty Mills is having a
:53:57. > :54:09.great game. Brock Motum has done everything they have asked.
:54:10. > :54:11.Australia are down by one. 625-64. Almost enough time for the last
:54:12. > :54:35.shot. Nikola Mirotic laid it in. Patty
:54:36. > :54:43.Mills lost the ball on the dribble. That is how the third quarter ends.
:54:44. > :54:50.Spain are ahead by three. 67-64. STUDIO:
:54:51. > :54:57.COMMENTATOR: that is how it looks. Things have even themselves out. And
:54:58. > :55:07.right now, they lead by three over Australia. Bogut has fouled out of
:55:08. > :55:14.the game for Australia which could be a factor, not least because Gasol
:55:15. > :55:16.already has 25 points and nine rebounds in this game. Gasol inside
:55:17. > :55:28.remains a great option for Spain. This is the last ten minutes of this
:55:29. > :55:29.penultimate game of the Olympic competition. The bronze medal is at
:55:30. > :55:44.stake. Australia have worked hard to get
:55:45. > :55:48.back into the contest after being down early in the first quarter.
:55:49. > :55:54.Data assists have not been as strong, about 13 the moment,
:55:55. > :55:58.compared to 19 from Spain. Their passing game is maybe not as strong,
:55:59. > :56:03.but they are still doing enough to stay in the game, the Australians.
:56:04. > :56:14.There have been some great moments, particularly from Patty Mills. Patty
:56:15. > :56:21.Mills has fouled. He could not get the follow-up shot.
:56:22. > :56:32.Victor Claver picks up his second foul. -- of the quarter, he now has
:56:33. > :56:36.to be. There were a lot of fouls early on, and we see Bogut has
:56:37. > :57:15.already got in trouble. Aron Baynes hits Nikola Mirotic. The
:57:16. > :57:23.referee will blow the whistle to check on him. They collided going
:57:24. > :57:30.for the loose ball. It may have been a clash of their knees. It was not a
:57:31. > :57:36.foul of any type. Hopefully it was a clash of knees, and not worse. Clash
:57:37. > :57:43.hurts for a bit, but a twist would be really worrying. It is a twist.
:57:44. > :57:50.Key pivoted from Aron Baynes's Westlake. The players know when
:57:51. > :57:59.they're in trouble. -- he pivoted. No, it was a clash. Usually that is
:58:00. > :58:05.just a shock, and you can slowly get back to your feet and walk it off.
:58:06. > :58:12.If it is ligament damage it is troublesome. The fact he is getting
:58:13. > :58:18.up might be a good sign for Spain. So important to their chances.
:58:19. > :58:49.At least he is walking. He will join Gasol for the upcoming NBA season.
:58:50. > :59:11.Brock Motum stuff sit through the hoop! Gasol came out for the block,
:59:12. > :59:15.and Brock Motum went past him! That was extraordinary stuff! The whole
:59:16. > :59:32.bench stood up, and then he just goes straight back into defensive.
:59:33. > :59:40.The shot clock expired before Felipe Reyes could get his shot. Two
:59:41. > :59:47.minutes have gone, and we're tied at 70. Spain have called the time-out.
:59:48. > :59:55.Look at this again. Gasol goes up, and Brock Motum goes past. If he had
:59:56. > :59:58.tried to stop to make a jumper, he would not have made it. That has
:59:59. > :00:15.fired up the Australians! Australia, the momentum might be
:00:16. > :00:24.going fairway. -- going fairway. Anderson and Motum are off the bench
:00:25. > :00:25.for Australia. Felipe Reyes -- Rudy Fernandez is the third highest
:00:26. > :00:39.scorer for Spain. Dellavedova to Motum. I think there
:00:40. > :00:44.are only wear because Bogut found out. He has provided extraordinary
:00:45. > :00:50.stuff from the bench. To be honest, there was enough contact from Pau
:00:51. > :00:54.Gasol. Brilliant stuff from Motum. I don't think anyone expected him to
:00:55. > :00:58.have the impact that she has had. Maybe people that know him well. But
:00:59. > :01:02.he has got some blocked shots. He is getting rebounds, going through,
:01:03. > :01:08.taking on Pau Gasol for the slam dunk. What a performance from Brock
:01:09. > :01:13.Motum. Another guy who played at Washington State, he's also played
:01:14. > :01:20.for Bologna, Adelaide in the Australian league. Motum tries to
:01:21. > :01:26.save it. He has played the last season in Lithuania. Top teams. He
:01:27. > :01:36.has a lot of experience at the top level. 70-70, just under eight
:01:37. > :01:44.minutes to play in this game. I block off on Claver from Spain.
:01:45. > :01:52.Dellavedova is calling for a foul. He could quite easily argue that he
:01:53. > :01:56.was pushed by the man setting the screen into the attack. Now there is
:01:57. > :02:00.an attacker as well. Either that is why he was upset. I thought for a
:02:01. > :02:05.second that it might be his fifth personal, it is his third. Navarro
:02:06. > :02:16.stands calmly. He shoots that it is one point up for Spain. What
:02:17. > :02:20.happened was he was being screened and it was Reyes, I think, who
:02:21. > :02:24.simply pushed him. Then he went into the player with the ball and I think
:02:25. > :02:31.that's why he thought it was a harsh call. But better not to say
:02:32. > :02:35.anything. Rodriguez, and it is a 3-point lead a game for Spain. As
:02:36. > :02:43.soon as they come down, they get three every time.
:02:44. > :02:57.Baynes, they leave him alone outside. Ingles wants to drive. Kick
:02:58. > :03:02.it out. Hits for three, we are tied again. 73-73 with three minutes --
:03:03. > :03:08.seven minutes to play. That is exactly the Australian way.
:03:09. > :03:15.Rodriguez drives the baseline. Mirotic is back in. He just walked
:03:16. > :03:25.off that new class. At the pass from Gasol inside. Ingles for Australia.
:03:26. > :03:36.Ingles wants to drive. Back to Baynes. Over two Patty Mills. It's
:03:37. > :03:43.taken away by Mirotic. He comes down and holds off. Rodriguez wants it on
:03:44. > :03:53.the other side. He waits for Pau Gasol to take his position. Uses the
:03:54. > :03:59.left and to hold off Motum. She V3. It misses. Mirotic chimes Broekhoff
:04:00. > :04:04.work tied up. -- shoots the three. That will be a foul on Claver and it
:04:05. > :04:08.is a similar situation. He is tied up with Baynes and as he gets away
:04:09. > :04:15.from Baynes he runs into the man with the ball. But the foul is
:04:16. > :04:24.called. Australia are really finishing strongly. Maybe physically
:04:25. > :04:28.looking stronger at the moment. They're really playing at a high
:04:29. > :04:35.pace was whether there was a mistake from Baynes, they're still good
:04:36. > :04:40.offensively. Anderson has come in. Mirotic a garden. Anderson drives
:04:41. > :04:44.the ball. Broekhoff picked off the ball and it drops through for
:04:45. > :04:51.Australia and now they have the lead! 75-73. The women's team who
:04:52. > :04:54.couldn't get past the quarterfinals are supporting the man for
:04:55. > :05:00.Australia, looking for their first-ever medal in the men's
:05:01. > :05:10.basketball. Gasol, isolated on Baynes. Tries to take the lead. A
:05:11. > :05:14.high arc three. Approaching the halfway point in this 4th quarter.
:05:15. > :05:20.Baynes again comes up to the screen for Mills. Knowles wants it from the
:05:21. > :05:32.foul line. He hits. Australia lead by one, 70 7-76 will stop --
:05:33. > :05:37.Australia lead by one. 77-76. Under five minutes to play in this game.
:05:38. > :05:57.Again Rodriguez has been fantastic. A couple of scores for him. Mills
:05:58. > :06:05.and Rodriguez commence. Rodriguez may be getting a rest now. Both
:06:06. > :06:11.teams are playing at a really high level. It's been a fantastic game of
:06:12. > :06:21.basketball. What a fantastic game Patty Mills has had. Four and a half
:06:22. > :06:26.to play. Spain leading by one. It was tipped out by Baynes, but only
:06:27. > :06:34.as far as Navarra. Rodriguez set things up for Spain now.
:06:35. > :06:44.Navarro, the captain. Mirotic stops for two. It's the rim. Dellavedova
:06:45. > :06:49.had to pry himself loose from Ricky Rubio before he could get the
:06:50. > :06:58.rebound. He hits, Australia lead by one with four minutes to play. I
:06:59. > :07:02.think that is the old Australian women's basketball team uniform in
:07:03. > :07:09.the stands. The tatties and part of the uniform. Navarro, his three goes
:07:10. > :07:13.in and out. Mirotic hit it and Mirotic is fouled by Anderson. He
:07:14. > :07:20.will go to the line. A grandstand finish here. Before you wondered
:07:21. > :07:24.whether Australia can match it after dominating so many of their games.
:07:25. > :07:27.They were really pushed hard by Serbia and were easily defeated in
:07:28. > :07:30.the end. But here they have shown they are a top-level basketball team
:07:31. > :07:35.because they are matching it with Spain. They have taken it all away
:07:36. > :07:43.and they are hunting for the bronze medal. Anderson has been fantastic.
:07:44. > :07:49.The bench contribution has been huge from Australia. Brock Motum, what a
:07:50. > :07:56.performance for him. You can't come in too deep of
:07:57. > :08:18.Fernandez. Aron, lived on that.
:08:19. > :08:28.Pretty basic stuff. No complicated plays, nothing like that. Just "Man
:08:29. > :08:34.up". Look how relaxed they are! I love to see that in coaches. Rudy
:08:35. > :08:40.Fernandez has such great form. It is a shame that Calderon hasn't got on.
:08:41. > :08:46.He has got of fallen out of the rotation and it is a shame. He's
:08:47. > :08:49.such a great player. Spain have put in a great performance but they have
:08:50. > :08:53.been matched by Australia. In this 4th quarter Spain have outshot them
:08:54. > :08:58.15-11 so far. Some fantastic basketball played. Patty Mills has
:08:59. > :09:09.been at the absolute forefront of that. Nicola Mirotic signed with Ray
:09:10. > :09:20.Madrid when he was 14 years old. -- signed with Real Madrid. He is now a
:09:21. > :09:27.Spanish citizen. He had 38 starts for the Bulls last season. Strong
:09:28. > :09:34.statistics. What isn't strong for him right now is he has missed the
:09:35. > :09:38.first. Mirotic ties the game yet again. It is 79-79 with three
:09:39. > :09:59.minutes and 42 seconds to play. Fernandez is on Mills. Mills is
:10:00. > :10:04.reaching and reaching before the foul is drawn of Fernandez. It will
:10:05. > :10:07.be two shots of the line for Patty Mills. The one player you want at
:10:08. > :10:12.the line for Australia in this situation is Patty Mills. Look at
:10:13. > :10:21.how hard he's working. Fernandez, there is the contact. Mills working
:10:22. > :10:24.and working. Anderson saying, you were pushing with the body. He could
:10:25. > :10:35.be him giving the motion that Fernandez did. -- see him. He did
:10:36. > :10:39.it. The reality of the game is that there is so much physical contact.
:10:40. > :10:45.It's a case of trying to keep it under control. Mills makes the
:10:46. > :10:47.second. Australia lead by one with three minutes to play in the game.
:10:48. > :11:07.Rubio leaves it up for Spain. Navarro tries to take Mills. Rubio
:11:08. > :11:12.is open for three. He misses. Baynes with the rebound for Australia. He
:11:13. > :11:16.just hands it to Dellavedova. Under three minutes to play now. Australia
:11:17. > :11:26.lead by one and with possession. Dominating the board. In Glasgow be
:11:27. > :11:34.for the -- Ingles will be called for the offensive foul. Spain will get
:11:35. > :11:43.the ball. He is moving, he's not even set. Before Rubio with that
:11:44. > :11:46.3-point shot, he had enough time to set himself. If he wants to be the
:11:47. > :11:50.top player that we all know he can be, he has two hippos. At this time
:11:51. > :12:01.in the game, Spain will get the ball back. That would make up call for
:12:02. > :12:11.make up call. Australia will get the penalty on the next foul. Rodriguez
:12:12. > :12:14.is back in the game. And Gasol, backing in on Baynes, backing in
:12:15. > :12:21.some more. Shoot the fadeaway and hips. Spain lead by one with two
:12:22. > :12:26.minutes to play. This is brilliant from Pau Gasol. I don't know how you
:12:27. > :12:32.can stop it. This is Pau Gasol's last game as an Olympian. It's a
:12:33. > :12:35.fantastic one. Dellavedova. Baynes with the short jumper. Australia
:12:36. > :12:45.leading by one with two minutes to play. Every basket is met by a
:12:46. > :12:50.massive cheer from both sides. It is a game is no room for error. Mirotic
:12:51. > :12:55.is outside. There is Rodriguez. Gasol finishes it off. Where did he
:12:56. > :12:58.come from? You heard the coach telling him to keep Gasol off the
:12:59. > :13:05.boards. Gasol without the 3-point line. Rodriguez started his drive.
:13:06. > :13:09.Spain lead by one. Dellavedova dishes to Mills. Mills puts it
:13:10. > :13:18.through. Shot right over the big man. 84-83, Australia lead by one.
:13:19. > :13:22.This is so tight. Incredible stuff from both teams. They're going blow
:13:23. > :13:26.for blow. But what mistake might take the advantage or give the
:13:27. > :13:34.advantage to the other team. Rodriguez pulled up for the floater.
:13:35. > :13:38.He hips. Spain win by one. 1.28 on the clock. Dellavedova brings it up
:13:39. > :13:45.for Australia. Slapped away by Rudy Fernandez. I cannot believe he's
:13:46. > :13:52.having to ask who it hit. Rudy Fernandez, of course, starts
:13:53. > :13:59.lobbying. I thought Dellavedova was saying he might have been hit. He
:14:00. > :14:02.won the foul as well. One person you didn't expect to make a mistake was
:14:03. > :14:07.going to be Dellavedova. They're going to look for it. If there's any
:14:08. > :14:15.doubt, you have to know for sure. This is such a crucial now. He stops
:14:16. > :14:24.to tell. You can see, if you look to the left of the screen you can see
:14:25. > :14:30.what they see. He's going to check it once again to make sure. It does
:14:31. > :14:39.look like it is Fernandez's like. That's pretty clear. -- Fernandez's
:14:40. > :14:43.leg. Do you think he will lecture Fernandez on giving an impassioned
:14:44. > :14:52.plea for the ball when the ball rent office leg? Watch, "Didn't hit me!"
:14:53. > :14:57.He put his hand on his face straightaway. I don't know why he
:14:58. > :15:01.thought it was going to go his way. Did you ever see Tom Stoppard play
:15:02. > :15:05.professional ball? There was a whole philosophical discussion on how a
:15:06. > :15:12.player who knows the ball will Ofcom... Mills can't get the ball.
:15:13. > :15:14.Baynes couldn't get the rebound. This is a huge defensive moment for
:15:15. > :15:21.Australia. Spain put it into Gasol's hands.
:15:22. > :15:45.Four on the clock. What a defensive display from
:15:46. > :15:50.Australia, when they needed it most. The pile of bodies that went for the
:15:51. > :15:53.rebound, four players going for it. They knew that they had to get
:15:54. > :16:03.possession or they were up against it. Patty Mills to make an error,
:16:04. > :16:10.after the game he has had. It was not an error, it was a tough shot.
:16:11. > :16:16.That is what it comes down to, if the shot is too difficult, he still
:16:17. > :16:21.has to make it. 41 seconds left, so no matter what Australia do, if they
:16:22. > :16:26.make a basket, Spain will get the ball back with a chance to win.
:16:27. > :16:45.Unless there is a foul. A technical foul would be different.
:16:46. > :16:55.Gasol has 29 points, 11 rebound is, in this game. If this is his last
:16:56. > :17:11.game for Spain, he has put the team on his shoulders. The San Antonio
:17:12. > :17:16.sports coach is delighted with them. He knows how to give him just enough
:17:17. > :17:26.minutes to get the best out of him. He is a perfect fit.
:17:27. > :17:35.Silver medallists wise in a row, to the United States, but will they get
:17:36. > :17:51.a bronze medal? Australia have never had a medal in basketball.
:17:52. > :18:00.David Andersen with the rebound, and he is fouled by Nikola Mirotic.
:18:01. > :18:03.Patty Mills needs to put that away. But luckily, David Andersen got to
:18:04. > :18:14.the offensive rebound and collected the foul. 16th file for Spain. To be
:18:15. > :18:22.honest the foul should be on Gasol. There was contact with Nikola
:18:23. > :18:31.Mirotic. But Gasol thought he was being called for the fable, and
:18:32. > :18:41.didn't like it. -- for the foul. David Andersen at the line.
:18:42. > :18:56.Excruciating for the Australians, it took and eternity.
:18:57. > :19:06.Australia ahead by one. 35 seconds remaining. Another time-out taken.
:19:07. > :19:13.Spain might want to take it quickly so they get another chance. It is a
:19:14. > :19:20.tough one. If they are going to take it quickly, it needs to be a good
:19:21. > :19:28.shot. Exactly. You have the outside shooters to take advantage of that.
:19:29. > :19:36.The thing you prefer is getting the lead. You can only deal with what
:19:37. > :19:43.you get. You cannot try to be too clever.
:19:44. > :19:52.You would rather be in the lead and have them have to make a shot to tie
:19:53. > :19:56.or a win, than not. If you need to get the ball back you are in
:19:57. > :20:01.trouble. Sergio Rodrigeuz is the master of pulling the shirt. He has
:20:02. > :20:07.not been called for it in this game. Patty Mills makes the shot. It has
:20:08. > :20:11.been a spectacular play for him. He has been marvellous for the
:20:12. > :20:19.Australians. Gasol has had a fantastic game for the Spanish. It
:20:20. > :20:25.is going to go down to the wire. Both teams deserved a medal. Like
:20:26. > :20:28.boxing. And this has been a boxing match for sure. If you think
:20:29. > :20:32.basketball is a game played only by Giants, Patty Mills is the shortest
:20:33. > :20:57.man, just under six feet. Sergio Llull is back in the game, at
:20:58. > :21:12.the top. That is a foul on Aron Baynes. Australia had won to give.
:21:13. > :21:17.That was the fifth for the team. It flip-flops the dynamic we spoke
:21:18. > :21:26.about on the last foul shot. With 28, Australia could work for almost
:21:27. > :21:31.the last shot. UC David Andersen's I has been patched up. -- you can see
:21:32. > :21:49.that he has been patched up above his eye.
:21:50. > :21:58.Gasol switches on both. Spain lead by one. Bidders for second
:21:59. > :22:11.difference between the game clock and the shot clock.
:22:12. > :22:20.Aron Baynes gets the role. Nine seconds left. Australia one ahead.
:22:21. > :22:23.The bench cannot contain themselves. They are ten seconds away from their
:22:24. > :22:27.first-ever medal of the men's basketball. But Spain will be coming
:22:28. > :22:33.at them. Aron Baynes, the pressure is enormous. It is his basket. Joe
:22:34. > :22:48.Ingles was there. Watch Victor Claver's hand as he
:22:49. > :23:03.pulls it trying to help the ball. It is like pinball, and moving the
:23:04. > :23:11.table. Spain have ten seconds, again inbound half-court. Australia have a
:23:12. > :23:16.time-out. They may have a second or two, depending on what Spain do.
:23:17. > :23:26.This is where you have got to not give the fable. That is the hard
:23:27. > :23:32.thing. -- the foul. You want to front Gasol, but you want to stop
:23:33. > :23:42.the past to him. You do not want to give the foul. That is very tough in
:23:43. > :23:46.these situations. I think the ball will go to Gasol. If it goes to him,
:23:47. > :23:50.he will kick it out, that is my guess.
:23:51. > :24:07.Patty Mills is called for it after the basket does not go through. It
:24:08. > :24:11.was a late blow of the whistle, for sure. David Andersen looked at the
:24:12. > :24:21.ball and then blew the whistle. Watch again. It is hard. Patty Mills
:24:22. > :24:25.is moving so perhaps they felt he did not set himself. Australia
:24:26. > :24:29.cannot believe it. This is so hard. It is tough on them. It is down to
:24:30. > :24:38.the free throws no. Sergio Rodrigeuz will put Spain up
:24:39. > :24:55.by one if he makes the shot. Australia take their time-out with
:24:56. > :25:03.5.5 seconds left in the game. 89-88 to Spain. I don't have statistics on
:25:04. > :25:10.how many changes there have been, but it has been nip and tuck the
:25:11. > :25:14.hallway. If you get into this situation and want a medal, it is
:25:15. > :25:21.time to step up. Patty Mills will be a candidate to step up here.
:25:22. > :25:25.Port-of-Spain foul, Australia have the chance to take the lead. -- but
:25:26. > :26:02.if Spain foul. He steps backwards. Yes, I think
:26:03. > :26:06.that is what the referee saw. Sergio Rodrigeuz was heading to the ground
:26:07. > :26:09.after he releases -- as he releases the shot. That was very lucky for
:26:10. > :26:30.Spain to get that. That did not miss by much, but Spain
:26:31. > :26:39.have won the Olympic bronze medal by one point. 89-88, and it was won by
:26:40. > :26:46.Sergio Rodrigeuz at the foul line, but the game was kept alive by Pau
:26:47. > :26:50.Gasol. STUDIO: congratulations to Spain,
:26:51. > :26:54.they have won the bronze medal. Heartbreak for Australia, searching
:26:55. > :26:58.for their first Olympic medal in basketball. They have been denied by
:26:59. > :27:02.one point. The look on their faces paints a picture and a thousand
:27:03. > :27:06.words. Unlucky for them but Spain follow-up the two silver medals with
:27:07. > :28:01.a June Joyce takes on Franz's Yoka. It
:28:02. > :28:08.could be a good contest. We look forward to that. Now, time for the
:28:09. > :28:12.final discipline in cycling, the cross-country in the men's mountain
:28:13. > :28:15.bike, and as we join it there at about the halfway stage. Grant
:28:16. > :28:24.Ferguson is the only British man competing, but the thought the
:28:25. > :28:29.French rider would be one to watch. The Olympic champion and Londoners
:28:30. > :28:33.ahead, with the five-time world champion from Switzerland. They seem
:28:34. > :29:15.to be dominating from each. We will join the commentators.
:29:16. > :29:22.Different lines here. A very steep section. This does not do it
:29:23. > :29:27.justice. You have to bend your neck really high to see to the top of it.
:29:28. > :29:34.This is an intense climb, and it will set the energy
:29:35. > :29:45.Coloma looks quite good. You went through a rough section where he
:29:46. > :29:50.lost contact with the two leaders. He looks like he is into a rhythm
:29:51. > :29:53.now. These two have a higher speed through all of these sections. Just
:29:54. > :30:03.extending their lead slowly but surely. A really steep drop off
:30:04. > :30:09.there. Again, for these Riders that is something they will do day in,
:30:10. > :30:18.day out. But at the sixth or seventh lap of an Olympic race it can be a
:30:19. > :30:32.downfall. Beautiful and smooth through this rocky, slippery
:30:33. > :30:48.section. The big shake-up of the day is Marotte not being here. Absalon
:30:49. > :30:54.just losing. Not a good day for Peter Sagan have to be puncture. I'm
:30:55. > :30:58.not sure if it was this or another puncture for Peter Sagan. A
:30:59. > :31:05.desperate day for the Slovakian who decided to take on this course. Once
:31:06. > :31:08.he came up in Rio to ride the road race course in January and realise
:31:09. > :31:11.that it would be for him in terms of his ambitions to win a gold medal
:31:12. > :31:16.here. He said to his federation, what are the options of getting a
:31:17. > :31:20.mountain bike slot? You raced a couple of races in April. He crashed
:31:21. > :31:26.in one and finished in fourth place in the Czech Republic. He went on to
:31:27. > :31:32.perform brilliantly, as ever, in the Tour de France. He went to the
:31:33. > :31:35.states to prepare there. Unfortunately, his race has come
:31:36. > :31:43.apart because of that puncture. Here are your two leaders. From the Czech
:31:44. > :31:52.Republic we have the reigning 2012 London Olympic gold medallist, and
:31:53. > :31:56.behind him Schurter from Switzerland who is the World Championship. First
:31:57. > :32:01.and second in London, but an second at the 2016 World Championships,
:32:02. > :32:08.these two. Just behind them we are seeing the French man, Schurter, he
:32:09. > :32:16.has had a fantastic ride. Now they are racing in bronze medal
:32:17. > :32:20.contention, these two. Schurter was left out of medal contention in
:32:21. > :32:26.London. He is back four years later and now in bronze medal contention.
:32:27. > :32:29.He will be hoping for a good second half of the race here. That will be
:32:30. > :32:34.brilliant for the French. As we said, they have and have the best
:32:35. > :32:40.Olympic Games on two wheels in the cycling discipline. This is their
:32:41. > :32:46.big chance. Absolutely. And really desperate for Julian Sagan as well
:32:47. > :32:52.as he tries to put himself back into the picture here. It is not looking
:32:53. > :33:02.any better, that picture, for Julian Absalon. Kulhavy and Schurter are
:33:03. > :33:06.the two men he would least want to be on the front. If they can keep
:33:07. > :33:18.this race going the way they are then they are unlikely to see
:33:19. > :33:22.Absalon. Colombian Botero is currently in sixth place. This is
:33:23. > :33:28.the lead. Kulhavy breathing deeply. We just saw Kulhavy put his hand on
:33:29. > :33:36.his stomach and pull a face. Does that mean he is having stomach
:33:37. > :33:47.problems? Absalon is at the bottom of the climb to like mountain. He
:33:48. > :33:57.will fight for all his work here, Schurter one. There is no -- he will
:33:58. > :34:03.fight for his work, Absalon. There is no doubt about that. He will not
:34:04. > :34:10.retire after the games. As we said, he was losing time at each time
:34:11. > :34:14.check. He will hold nothing back, there is no question. Where does
:34:15. > :34:27.this leave us? We just come back through the time we met. Kulhavy and
:34:28. > :34:31.Schurter looking more and more likely that they will fight it out
:34:32. > :34:39.for the gold medal. Chasing them is the Frenchman and the Spaniard.
:34:40. > :34:46.Schurter has had this final big gold. He is still leading the World
:34:47. > :34:50.Cup standings at the moment. Only just ahead of Schurter. They have
:34:51. > :34:59.been involved in a tussle all year long at every round of the World Cup
:35:00. > :35:05.so far. When they go to Andorra for the final, in fact, in two weeks'
:35:06. > :35:15.time, it will be the final showdown between those two. This is the
:35:16. > :35:27.showdown for gold medal. We just saw a showdown for the bronze medal at
:35:28. > :35:38.the moment. The Spaniard Coloma is looking good. We saw some
:35:39. > :35:47.expressions on the face that Marotte is having trouble staying with the
:35:48. > :35:50.Spaniard. Sad news, James Reid of South Africa, the South African
:35:51. > :35:55.champion, desperate times for young James Reid. He is carrying the scars
:35:56. > :36:00.of perhaps they fall. The 24-year-old will be absolutely
:36:01. > :36:04.devastated. He was focused so intently on getting to Rio. Very
:36:05. > :36:10.sad, indeed. South Africa have another young rider in this field,
:36:11. > :36:16.but James Reid is out of the field sadly. Meanwhile, it is Kulhavy and
:36:17. > :36:20.Schurter. We talk about when will Schurter go? Maybe it is Kulhavy who
:36:21. > :36:26.says he will start dictating terms in this case and see how he deals
:36:27. > :36:33.with it. There is nothing to choose between the two. We haven't seen any
:36:34. > :36:40.weakness in showing by either one of these. Both have been very composed.
:36:41. > :36:43.Both have been placed -- neither has been placed under extreme pressure
:36:44. > :37:02.by one or the other, they are looking very relaxed. Kulhavy and --
:37:03. > :37:06.Coloma and Morotte. We are about 35 seconds back on this group, the lead
:37:07. > :37:10.group of two riders, Kulhavy and Schurter. They have done pretty much
:37:11. > :37:15.everything there is to win in the sport between them. There is gold,
:37:16. > :37:21.silver and bronze. The significance is that the man on the front,
:37:22. > :37:25.Kulhavy, one that gold medal at London. Schurter wants to complete
:37:26. > :37:30.the set. He has got a bronze and a silver. He looks over his shoulder.
:37:31. > :37:36.Still looking to see what the gap is behind him. As we said, they have no
:37:37. > :37:40.radio communication. They need to pick those points on the course. The
:37:41. > :37:45.course designer does have to take that into consideration when he
:37:46. > :37:47.builds the course. He has got a whole set of regulations. One thing
:37:48. > :37:52.that is great about mountain biking is they do have a regulation that
:37:53. > :37:56.the course has to be spectator and television friendly. It also has
:37:57. > :37:59.have points where you can see competitors from a distance behind.
:38:00. > :38:04.The athletes will know where the best places to have a look to see if
:38:05. > :38:08.they can see anyone behind. They couldn't see this pair because they
:38:09. > :38:17.are a fair distance behind. Their gap is opening all the time, around
:38:18. > :38:27.35 seconds. Kulhavy and Schurter are now on lap five of seven.
:38:28. > :38:39.The Colombian moves to the front. This is positions five and six. The
:38:40. > :38:42.man behind them should be Julien Absalon making a concerted effort to
:38:43. > :38:50.get himself within range, perhaps of the medals. It will be a phenomenal
:38:51. > :38:55.achievement and great viewing if he does. Very consistent laps by these
:38:56. > :39:00.two. A little bit faster on lap five than they were previously on lap
:39:01. > :39:04.two. They went out hard, now they have settled in and are applying the
:39:05. > :39:07.pressure. We might see a faster lap on this one. It looks like the gold
:39:08. > :39:18.medal will be contested between these two. An exciting race on for
:39:19. > :39:24.the bronze medal between Marotte and Coloma. Schurter has been very
:39:25. > :39:28.successful in marathon riding. -- Marotte has been very successful in
:39:29. > :39:32.marathon riding. When you get out there there is a mental game to stay
:39:33. > :39:35.composed and look more comfortable than the person that you're
:39:36. > :39:46.competing against. This is interesting because the Italian was
:39:47. > :39:51.ahead -- Absalon was ahead of the Italian. Now the gap has opened up.
:39:52. > :39:56.Is Absalon reaching the end of his efforts here? The Frenchman rolls
:39:57. > :40:03.over the line. He is well over two minutes down on the race for the
:40:04. > :40:12.gold medal. That will really hurt. Has at someone -- has Schurter given
:40:13. > :40:16.it up? Not the best day for Schurter. It was such a talked about
:40:17. > :40:20.event him in Rio that we would see the final showdown. Have the two-man
:40:21. > :40:30.race, but it hasn't panned out like that. Schurter is not having the
:40:31. > :40:44.best race. The Belgian champion goes through.
:40:45. > :40:56.The brilliant former 2010 World Champion, one of the great
:40:57. > :41:03.characters of the sport, one who without his fifth Olympic Games.
:41:04. > :41:08.Check out this fight in this section. We've seen that Schurter
:41:09. > :41:12.likes to take the lead through here. They attack that little bit of
:41:13. > :41:23.section. Into downtown, the Rock garden. Schurter likes to lead in
:41:24. > :41:27.this section. Absolutely masterful. Most of the technical sections, we
:41:28. > :41:33.have seen Schurter accelerate to the front. He is able to take the lead
:41:34. > :41:40.when he wants to. This is getting a little bit more fatigued and less
:41:41. > :41:44.composed in the technical sections. Schurter just flying up these step
:41:45. > :41:53.ups. Two distinct lines, one either side of the rocks. Well practised,
:41:54. > :41:58.keeping it together. This is the deep end of the race. Lap five of
:41:59. > :42:07.seven. Fatigued and aspirations start combining to create all sorts
:42:08. > :42:11.of difficulties for the riders. Coloma in fourth place will be
:42:12. > :42:19.thinking, "There goes my bronze medal!" He has to do something as
:42:20. > :42:26.Kulhavy and Schurter climb up that right. Begin with my athletes who
:42:27. > :42:29.competed in Rio, the different things that go into their mind.
:42:30. > :42:33.Being at the Olympic Games are significantly so much different and
:42:34. > :42:37.higher pressure, simply because it comes around every four years and
:42:38. > :42:42.you need to get that preparation smack bang for the day. In a World
:42:43. > :42:46.Cup, there is another one next week. It is not as higher pressure. You
:42:47. > :42:49.don't spend their four years with it in the back of your mind. Every
:42:50. > :42:55.single day these Olympic athletes about the Olympic Games. That is the
:42:56. > :42:58.reason why things get out there -- why things happen when they get out
:42:59. > :43:05.there. They just don't have everything in control because it is
:43:06. > :43:11.such high pressure. One off, the other half two. They run here. Once
:43:12. > :43:18.you get traction and come off, it is very difficult to get on. Marotte
:43:19. > :43:22.has been -- Coloma has been very tactical, trying not to put too much
:43:23. > :43:26.pressure on himself. It is just amazing how much the media can have
:43:27. > :43:30.an influence on so many different things. If Schurter explains to the
:43:31. > :43:34.media, this is my type of course, I love it, that message gets out there
:43:35. > :43:41.and plays the mind of the competition. Look at the gap. Oh,
:43:42. > :43:48.Schurter nearly loses it at the bottom. Keeping it together. On the
:43:49. > :43:57.other side, Kulhavy is off the back. Did he have a problem? Schurter just
:43:58. > :44:03.accelerated it. That was so scary for the Swiss leader as we look back
:44:04. > :44:06.at Marotte and Coloma. These are the men racing in bronze medal
:44:07. > :44:11.contention right now. Marotte just stepped off the map as does Coloma.
:44:12. > :44:14.Whilst this is going on up front for the gold medal fight, we see
:44:15. > :44:21.Schurter just applying pressure through the technical section. Just
:44:22. > :44:28.there, as he applies the pressure, nearly came unstuck. I don't think
:44:29. > :44:34.Kulhavy saw that. He really is putting a search here. Schurter is
:44:35. > :44:40.on fire. -- a surge. He has decided he will win this race from the front
:44:41. > :44:46.and leave nothing to chance. Kulhavy is a good 8-10 seconds off the
:44:47. > :44:52.leader now. This is what we expected. This man, Schurter, he has
:44:53. > :44:56.looked powerful. He has had good acceleration when he wants to move
:44:57. > :45:02.to the front. He really wants to finish with Kulhavy who -- he really
:45:03. > :45:07.doesn't want to lose to Kulhavy who outsprinted him in the final stages
:45:08. > :45:11.of the race in London 2012. He wants to play it a little bit more safe,
:45:12. > :45:13.put the effort in. He won't be easing off the pedals until he
:45:14. > :45:28.crosses the line. Ferreira is a significant moment as
:45:29. > :45:34.Nino Schurter applies the pressure. -- this is a significant moment.
:45:35. > :45:38.Halfway through the sixth lap of seven. It was unusual to see
:45:39. > :45:42.Schurter come unstuck as he was applying the pressure, but the
:45:43. > :45:48.mental energy that goes into this. Seda focused faces of them in front.
:45:49. > :46:07.Not a moment to relax. Schurter had a little bit on this lap. Get the
:46:08. > :46:14.feeling he is suffering. They look over their shoulders to see who is
:46:15. > :46:25.behind. The gap is growing all the time. Nearly one minute to Maxime
:46:26. > :46:30.Marotte. Schurter has looked impeccable throughout. He came into
:46:31. > :46:38.the competition as favourite, he has won four out of the last five World
:46:39. > :46:42.Championships. He is looking great. This is Kulhavy now. He is relaxed,
:46:43. > :46:48.he knows he has been beaten. He is not digging deep and panicking that
:46:49. > :46:54.Schurter has a bit of a gap on him. He is the Olympic gold medallist
:46:55. > :46:59.from London. The gap has opened up quickly. Schurter is on fire. All he
:47:00. > :47:03.has to hope for is that it stays together for him mechanically and
:47:04. > :47:08.physically. You feel he has the condition. So much attention to
:47:09. > :47:14.detail preparing for the Olympic Games with his equipment. He has
:47:15. > :47:21.been raiding this bike with great success, he has won World Cups with
:47:22. > :47:29.that. But having this course,... Let us take a look at them coming down.
:47:30. > :47:38.And Asti crash. And another. Such a hard crash on those rocks. He has
:47:39. > :47:41.taken a lot of impact on his chest. Cracked ribs so often happen as you
:47:42. > :47:49.get more fatigued on these technical sections. But look at Schurter, look
:47:50. > :48:00.at the gap he has put on Kulhavy. He will get some confidence an
:48:01. > :48:05.incredible ride by Schurter. He will get some confidence with that. The
:48:06. > :48:12.man in Gold medal position is really applying the pressure. He has been
:48:13. > :48:21.so consistent over the years. He likes to ride really will. He has
:48:22. > :48:29.27.5 inch bay, which suited him perfectly, but the 29 did not. --
:48:30. > :48:40.bicycle. He sits really low down over the front end of it. And it is
:48:41. > :48:54.all paying for Nino Schurter. No locks Raphael Gagne, the Canadian.
:48:55. > :49:00.National luck -- no luck. And he'd is that all Portuguese rider, a
:49:01. > :49:03.marathon champion this year as well. But Schurter, the cross-country
:49:04. > :49:10.World Champion, is leaving nothing to chance as he chases down an
:49:11. > :49:14.Olympic gold medal. He's not interested in taking on anything at
:49:15. > :49:19.the moment, he is just on a mission, riding to the Olympic Games that
:49:20. > :49:24.such a consistent manner over the years. He came to the competition
:49:25. > :49:34.very ambitious, he really wants the gold medal, and he is well on his
:49:35. > :49:38.way. Kulhavy comes to the tech zone. She shakes his head that he shakes
:49:39. > :49:43.his head. That one will do. Often the first man has something in it,
:49:44. > :49:48.so they will have a choice whether they want plain water or what they
:49:49. > :49:52.want in it. That is why he will have shaken his head to the first one.
:49:53. > :49:59.Depending on what he wanted to consume coming up to the last lap.
:50:00. > :50:04.He is on a mission, he's in rhythm. Kulhavy looks a little less
:50:05. > :50:12.aggressive. There is no shortage from aggression here for Nino
:50:13. > :50:18.Schurter. The World Champion, silver and bronze medallist twice in the
:50:19. > :50:28.Olympic Games in London and Beijing. He wants a gold medal and he has one
:50:29. > :50:31.lap to complete. He took on the race break from the start, going out hard
:50:32. > :50:34.and getting in the first few possessions, riding at the front
:50:35. > :50:40.from the start, which has paid dividends. He has also appeared to
:50:41. > :50:45.be the strongest man in the race. Kulhavy is looking at his tyres. Has
:50:46. > :50:49.he got a mechanical? His pace has dropped dramatically, but his body
:50:50. > :50:55.language and expressions, there was nearly a look of this man being too
:50:56. > :51:01.good for him. It has been a great read from Kulhavy defending his gold
:51:02. > :51:04.medal. A battle with Schurter, but that six lap when Schurter decided
:51:05. > :51:10.to put it all to bed with an incredible attack, that has left
:51:11. > :51:14.Kulhavy over half a minute back as he heads into the final lap.
:51:15. > :51:18.Schurter will not want to hold anything back. He will be mindful of
:51:19. > :51:24.the pitfalls that can happen on the last lap. We saw Schurter going
:51:25. > :51:31.through the startling, with his fastest lap. He has the endurance
:51:32. > :51:40.and power, and he is now putting it down. What about this battle for
:51:41. > :51:45.bronze? These two have been at it almost the length of the race. For a
:51:46. > :51:58.while it looked as if the Spaniard was off the back, but he has
:51:59. > :52:05.rejoined. Here's a real character. They have been fighting it out the
:52:06. > :52:19.whole time. Maxime Marotte looks so good, then the Spaniard fights back.
:52:20. > :52:23.Looking at Kulhavy going up, he was almost taking off, such as his
:52:24. > :52:28.effort. We know that he has immense power. If he harnesses it on the
:52:29. > :52:35.final lap, he might give Nino Schurter afraid. But half a minute
:52:36. > :52:51.is a lot to make up on this 4.5 kilometre circuit.
:52:52. > :52:57.Look at them hammering it. They are going to go at each other. Who is
:52:58. > :53:03.going to win this battle for the bronze medal? It is not a little
:53:04. > :53:12.battle, it is a big battle, with so much at stake. Some mental games
:53:13. > :53:18.going between them. Fighting and attacking, really exciting race for
:53:19. > :53:24.the bronze medal. This is the gold medal man at the moment, Nino
:53:25. > :53:29.Schurter. He is in a class of his own. He had one little mishap on the
:53:30. > :53:33.previous lap, where that could have come unstuck, but he controlled it
:53:34. > :53:41.so well with so much experience. He will play it safe on these technical
:53:42. > :53:45.sessions. This is a beautiful section of the course. Schurter
:53:46. > :53:52.attacks it. He's getting tired legs on the final lap, but he still looks
:53:53. > :54:02.strong. An incredible effort. As he opens the gap on Kulhavy. Kulhavy
:54:03. > :54:07.has given his best here in defence of the gold-medal. -- his gold
:54:08. > :54:18.medal. But it is slipping away from him. Looks like this will be the
:54:19. > :54:21.transition that we had been expecting to happen and mountain
:54:22. > :54:30.biking for a while. Julien Absalon has been the king for so long. Last
:54:31. > :54:34.two years Schurter has been the World Champion, chipping away at the
:54:35. > :54:40.Crown that Julien Absalon has. Surely this will be the new
:54:41. > :54:46.champion. The new king of cross-country mountain biking.
:54:47. > :54:53.Julien Absalon is in ninth place. About 3.5 minutes down. With Julien
:54:54. > :54:56.Absalon retiring after this Olympic Games, it looks like it is all
:54:57. > :55:01.Schurter because he has been consistent. Kulhavy, he is second in
:55:02. > :55:07.the World Championships, the reigning champion from London 2012.
:55:08. > :55:14.But it is now all about this man. He loves that section, he has done very
:55:15. > :55:18.well through the in every lap. That is not much that Schurter cannot do.
:55:19. > :55:27.A lot of discussion about this course being well suited to his
:55:28. > :55:30.strengths. This is an exciting race, all the way through between those
:55:31. > :55:36.riders for the bronze medal. But Kulhavy is between Schurter and the
:55:37. > :55:40.two chasers fighting for the bronze medal. He will not be able to relax
:55:41. > :55:45.too much. It looks like he has accepted, this is Kulhavy, that
:55:46. > :55:50.Schurter is too strong today. Just trying to get to the finish. He will
:55:51. > :55:54.be pleased with a silver medal. He wanted a gold medal but he is
:55:55. > :56:01.fighting to keep the distance between the two fighting it out for
:56:02. > :56:06.the bronze medal. Schurter is so smooth. He is very low over the
:56:07. > :56:17.front of the bike. Kulhavy is a bigger man, but Schurter is so
:56:18. > :56:22.smooth as he rolls down into the rock garden. This is where he had a
:56:23. > :56:27.scary moment on the last lap. Taking it a bit easier after the mishap he
:56:28. > :56:35.had. He wants to get through there safely. You see them struggling at
:56:36. > :56:39.different times. Yes, just when you think one of them is done, he is
:56:40. > :56:40.back, then the other slips away. It is a brilliant battle for the bronze
:56:41. > :56:55.medal. Schurter is getting closer and
:56:56. > :57:12.closer to the gold-medal. Kulhavy, on the well worn track. The
:57:13. > :57:23.pathway has been carved through the rock garden. He knows exactly what
:57:24. > :57:27.can happen in a mountain bike race. He won't have given up hope just
:57:28. > :57:32.yet. You never know what might happen to the man in the lead. He
:57:33. > :57:40.would not be wishing it on him, but he has to keep himself ahead of
:57:41. > :57:44.these two, the battle for bronze. At the moment it is Coloma and bronze
:57:45. > :57:52.medal position. Maxime Marotte is the man chasing him.
:57:53. > :57:59.What a special moment it would be for Schurter, he already has a
:58:00. > :58:05.bronze medal from Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012, the Swiss man.
:58:06. > :58:14.Will he make it here? He will take confidence from the gap. Nino
:58:15. > :58:16.Schurter has not put a foot wrong. We have seen many other contenders
:58:17. > :58:34.suffered mechanical problems. A few people have suffered puncture
:58:35. > :58:40.is. So we have seen others crashing, but it has been smooth riding for
:58:41. > :58:44.Schurter and Kulhavy. We must not forget what Kulhavy dead at the 2012
:58:45. > :58:48.London Olympics when he sprinted home to take the gold medal from
:58:49. > :58:51.Schurter in the last couple of hundred metres. He is also looking
:58:52. > :58:56.behind them, maybe thinking that the gold medal is out of reach. Schurter
:58:57. > :59:01.will not take the pressure off the pedals until he crosses the line.
:59:02. > :59:06.Third time lucky, we hope, for him because he has displayed so much
:59:07. > :59:12.strength and pure class out there today.
:59:13. > :59:21.He makes this course looks so easy. The gap is 44 seconds. This is half
:59:22. > :59:27.way through the last lap, the bronze medal battled. Coloma and Maxime
:59:28. > :59:39.Marotte. They have been locked in battle for the last 4.5 laps.
:59:40. > :59:43.Perhaps one of them will walk away without an Olympic medal. One of the
:59:44. > :59:48.worst places to finish in an Olympic Games. Coming into the Olympic
:59:49. > :59:52.Games, you would have put Maxime Marotte as a medal chance, but
:59:53. > :59:56.Coloma has done really well, probably not one of them that we
:59:57. > :00:02.would have listed as a medal chance. He has been fighting in this
:00:03. > :00:09.position for the entire race. Maxime Marotte is comfortable on the feel.
:00:10. > :00:15.Coloma has applied pressure. Interesting to see the Frenchman, to
:00:16. > :00:25.see if he has anything in the legs. It has been a fantastic battle.
:00:26. > :00:32.He made his way to the front, starting from the back line and it
:00:33. > :00:38.all fell apart so early in the race. Did not get his chance to see what
:00:39. > :00:46.he was capable of. It would have been a wonderful battle, a little
:00:47. > :00:51.side story I would think, more than a side story, here's the champion.
:00:52. > :00:56.Whether he finished in the medals or not, just how he went here. He is
:00:57. > :01:03.the 2008 junior champion and last road in a World Cup in 2009, he does
:01:04. > :01:09.not have the race craft experience of these riders. There are few
:01:10. > :01:19.better than this man, 46 Micro, he looks down as he comes down and
:01:20. > :01:25.heads towards the back -- Nino Schurter. He is not putting pressure
:01:26. > :01:27.on the pedals, there must be something seriously wrong, this is
:01:28. > :01:44.not what we have seen from 13 macro. -- Jaroslav Kulhavy. This is
:01:45. > :01:50.devastating for him, maybe that is why he has dropped off. Two riders
:01:51. > :01:58.battling it out for the bronze medal behind him. It does not look as
:01:59. > :02:08.though he has a flat. It is possible that he is really trying to play it
:02:09. > :02:14.safe. So 13 macro, he will be feeling the heat. -- Jaroslav
:02:15. > :02:18.Kulhavy. This will be impressive if he has. He has been so calm and
:02:19. > :02:26.cool, he has been choosing his moment. Jaroslav Kulhavy here.
:02:27. > :02:32.Interestingly, he has just dropped the pace, he lost time to Nino
:02:33. > :02:36.Schurter. He would like to have caught sight of Jaroslav Kulhavy and
:02:37. > :02:43.fancy a shot at the Silver medal. He is going over the rocks now. Super
:02:44. > :02:48.impressive ride from the Spaniard and we see the Frenchman in the
:02:49. > :02:52.background. He has broken away. This is the man in the lead, Nino
:02:53. > :02:57.Schurter. He needs to play it safe to take the gold medal. What an
:02:58. > :03:04.impressive ride, a man who would have felt the pressure coming into
:03:05. > :03:11.Rio. Bronze medallist in Beijing and a medallist in London. He wants this
:03:12. > :03:16.medal. Fantastic race by Nino Schurter. -- a gold medallist. Nino
:03:17. > :03:20.Schurter has done everything perfectly. He is going to put the
:03:21. > :03:28.finishing touches to a remarkable ride. He has stayed at the front of
:03:29. > :03:32.the race from early on. Timed his attack perfectly on the penultimate
:03:33. > :03:39.lap to get away from Jaroslav Kulhavy. He will punch the air, Nino
:03:40. > :03:44.Schurter is the Olympic champion in 2016. He has got the full set, gold,
:03:45. > :03:50.silver and bronze and this will taste very sweet for the world
:03:51. > :03:55.champion. Very deserving champion, from start to finish, what a
:03:56. > :04:01.fabulous race. That is the class of a man who is at the top of mountain
:04:02. > :04:04.biking. Here comes the silver medallist, Jaroslav Kulhavy. A
:04:05. > :04:10.fantastic effort by Jaroslav Kulhavy to go in defence of the gold medal
:04:11. > :04:16.he won in London. He fought a hard battle with Nino Schurter but could

:04:28. > :04:32.Republic, to go with his gold medal from London four years ago. He will
:04:33. > :04:37.be delighted. He had stomach problems. He got through for the
:04:38. > :04:43.silver medal, for a true champion, it is great to see his delight. What
:04:44. > :04:51.a ride from this man, he had a fabulous ride, but he comes off
:04:52. > :05:06.better here. The bronze medal for Spain. 11 mackerel. An amazing ride.
:05:07. > :05:10.He is loving it -- 11 mackerel. -- Carlos Coloma Nicolas. It is so
:05:11. > :05:23.beautiful to see how excited they are. Delighted. He is ecstatic with
:05:24. > :05:33.his results. More disappointment for the Frenchman who lost out in the
:05:34. > :05:46.end. That is the top three, and what a ride by 32-macro.
:05:47. > :05:54.-- Jhonnatan Botero Villegas?. He started way back on the fourth row
:05:55. > :06:04.of the grid and the 24-year-old from Columbia comes over in fifth place.
:06:05. > :06:17.The gold medallist is Nino Schurter. His Swiss countrymen, Matthias
:06:18. > :06:27.Fluckiger comes in in fifth place. 34 will want to have a in that in

:06:38. > :06:43.in seventh place. He gave everything, as every one of these
:06:44. > :06:47.riders has done here. This man put his attack down in lap six where he
:06:48. > :06:57.had his fastest lap. A fabulous ride. Rolling across the line is
:06:58. > :07:03.Julien Absalon, two time Olympic medallist, it was not to be this

:07:28. > :07:32.today, an average speed of 22.1 kilometres per hour for the race
:07:33. > :07:35.from Nino Schurter, so tougher conditions than expected. That is
:07:36. > :07:42.the man who can respond to all conditions, Nino Schurter. This is
:07:43. > :07:46.Victor Koretzky, the young French rider, we will see more from him I
:07:47. > :07:57.am sure to come. Top ten finish at the Olympic Games. There is the
:07:58. > :08:09.German, 39-macro. He wanted at least a top ten position. -- Manuel Fumic.
:08:10. > :08:12.A world-class display from Nino Schurter. This is Jose Antonio
:08:13. > :08:33.Hermida. Fifth Olympic Games for Jose Antonio
:08:34. > :08:39.Hermida and a very respectable 15th place for the former world champion.
:08:40. > :08:44.Great to see team-mates they are congratulating each other. Nino
:08:45. > :08:54.Schurter, 30 years of age, many more bike races for that man to. Here is
:08:55. > :09:11.21-macro. The Australian who has put in a brave and solid right -- Daniel
:09:12. > :09:19.McConnell. Excellent ride by Grant Ferguson from Great Britain. This is
:09:20. > :09:28.a young man with great talent. The British champion crosses the line in
:09:29. > :09:31.17th place. Great to see Grant Ferguson coming back in 17th, but
:09:32. > :09:37.what a commanding performance from Nino Schurter, he has five world
:09:38. > :09:45.titles to his name, a silver medal from Beijing, a bronze medal from
:09:46. > :09:50.London. Well, welcome to BBC Four and thank you for your company, it
:09:51. > :09:55.is starting to rain again, let us look because we can see for the last
:09:56. > :10:01.day of the Olympics, a busy Olympic Park, trees six era where fans and
:10:02. > :10:04.at the start of today, 12 gold medals on offer and there are still
:10:05. > :10:14.plenty of gold medals to come. Lots of action here, starting with
:10:15. > :10:19.handballs. Denmark take on France who are aiming to be the first side
:10:20. > :10:26.to win three Olympic handball medals coming up next. We have the
:10:27. > :10:31.basketball final where Serbia hoped to steal the headlines, the
:10:32. > :10:39.Americans have not been beaten as a national side since 2006, though.
:10:40. > :10:44.And there are gold medals up for grabs in boxing here on BBC Four and
:10:45. > :10:54.we have the women's middleweight final. So, what do you know about
:10:55. > :10:59.handball? It might not be one of our national sports but it is hugely
:11:00. > :11:12.popular around the world. It is fast and furious, let us find out more.
:11:13. > :11:16.Olympic handball is a fast blowing, high-scoring, body contact game that
:11:17. > :11:21.is played over two halves of 30 minutes. It is played by two teams
:11:22. > :11:25.of seven players, six outfield players at a goalkeeper. Each goal
:11:26. > :11:29.is surrounded by a semi-circular area indicated by a line six metres
:11:30. > :11:34.from the goal and only the defending goalkeeper is allowed in this area.
:11:35. > :11:37.Players can move with this ball by dribbling and passing in the same
:11:38. > :11:40.way that basketball player would. They can block the ball with their
:11:41. > :11:58.head, chest, five knees but players cannot
:11:59. > :12:01.stand still with the ball for more than three seconds at a time. If a
:12:02. > :12:04.player commits a foul, the referee can award a free throw or a shot
:12:05. > :12:07.which is taken from the seven metre line and is given when the referee
:12:08. > :12:09.rules that there is a goal-scoring opportunity. A free throw is like a
:12:10. > :12:12.free kick in football and is generally taken from the spot with a
:12:13. > :12:15.foul occurred and it is taken from the free throw line if that happens
:12:16. > :12:17.in this area. Overtime is only played during the knockout phase it
:12:18. > :12:20.scores are tied at the end of regulation time. When this happens,
:12:21. > :12:23.teams play five minutes extra and only play another five minutes of
:12:24. > :12:29.the score is still tied. If the teams are still tied at the end of
:12:30. > :12:35.this period, the result is decided by a shoot out. The French have won
:12:36. > :12:38.back-to-back gold medals at the current world champions. They are
:12:39. > :12:43.taking on Denmark and aiming to be the first side to win three Olympic
:12:44. > :12:51.handball medals. Let us join our commentators.
:12:52. > :13:06.Make that four! Who are penalty shot. -- bad penalty shot. Expecting
:13:07. > :13:12.him to bring both arms down and he only brought one down, clever play
:13:13. > :13:17.by the goalkeeper. They go to crowd the attack. 12 minutes played, a
:13:18. > :13:27.penalty for each side, Dan -- Denmark scored there is an France
:13:28. > :13:30.missed theirs. It is six all. Their best finish previously was losing
:13:31. > :13:38.out in the bronze medal match in Los Angeles in 1984. Out on the
:13:39. > :13:45.weighing. Mortensen finds the back of the net. Denmark move into the
:13:46. > :13:51.lead. I think that is the first time in the match that they have been in
:13:52. > :14:01.front. It is 7-6 to Denmark. Mortensen with the gold. The World
:14:02. > :14:05.Championships went to extra time. A European Championship at home, a
:14:06. > :14:09.final they would rather forget when France destroyed them in front of
:14:10. > :14:14.the home crowd. Will it be third time lucky for Denmark against
:14:15. > :14:22.France here today? He manages to release the ball. Huge angle. Makes
:14:23. > :14:36.up for the penalty miss. A second goal for Guigou. Good play from the
:14:37. > :14:50.French, really quick and low. 60 six was left completely stranded. It was
:14:51. > :14:54.an open door -- Svan Hansen?. Right on the goal-line. They have managed
:14:55. > :14:59.to overlap on the wing quite few times. It is all going sideways at
:15:00. > :15:07.the moment. They desperately try and open up the wing. That is what he is
:15:08. > :15:12.good at, Olsen, he is not the tallest of players but he is so
:15:13. > :15:17.fast. Nothing given. He has to race back, he thought he was fouled.
:15:18. > :15:27.Morten Olsen is making his Olympic debut in his first senior
:15:28. > :15:30.tournament. Hansen with the goal! Denmark now have an advantage of
:15:31. > :15:36.two, and for one of the best goalkeepers in the business... Oh!
:15:37. > :15:47.It got a deflection. Just as he released the shop, it took it
:15:48. > :15:51.through Omeyer's legs. Number 19 comes in, a hugely entertaining
:15:52. > :15:58.player if he can get himself going, another one of the PSG contingent.
:15:59. > :16:04.Hansen sporting a nice bandage over his left eye. He sustained the cut
:16:05. > :16:14.against France earlier. Narcisse keeps the line. He's got a huge
:16:15. > :16:18.shot! Daniel Narcisse, third goal. Back to within one as we go midway
:16:19. > :16:23.through the first half in the Olympic final. What a good quality
:16:24. > :16:28.final this has been. This is exactly what we hoped it would be from the
:16:29. > :16:31.start. Just got to sustain it. They've played a lot of handball,
:16:32. > :16:36.these two teams, over the past couple of weeks. No doubt that
:16:37. > :16:46.fatigue will become a factor towards the end of the match, as Noddesbo
:16:47. > :16:51.comes on, towards the line. Straightaway he is in the frame and
:16:52. > :17:04.again a save off the right foot of the Maher -- of Omeyer. He plays for
:17:05. > :17:11.Barcelona... His club team-mate has not come on, also player at
:17:12. > :17:17.Barcelona. Karabatic seems to have caught Olsen's foot. He apologises,
:17:18. > :17:26.as Olsen walks around rather gingerly. Another fantastic save!
:17:27. > :17:33.And there is the quick break goal! Denmark 9-9 France. Once again, as
:17:34. > :17:39.it has been since 1999, Thierry Omeyer making the stop for France.
:17:40. > :17:43.Unbelievable! You think that long-range shot is easy, it's an
:17:44. > :17:47.open goal, trust me, when you're standing on the court it looks like
:17:48. > :17:52.a postage stamp at the other end. You got to get a straight line onto
:17:53. > :17:59.it and that was nicely done. The UQ making a good start here. The last
:18:00. > :18:02.ten minutes of the semifinal against Germany, they lost their way but
:18:03. > :18:08.somehow they just pulled it back in the last second. He's been loitering
:18:09. > :18:16.upfront and he doesn't have to go to far! A third goal into an empty goal
:18:17. > :18:26.for France and suddenly the tactic is beginning to backfire on Denmark.
:18:27. > :18:37.Another goal for Mikel do you view -- Michael do you -- Guigou. Denmark
:18:38. > :18:42.nine - ten France. Part of the problem is no turnovers for France
:18:43. > :18:46.in the opening ten minutes. Three goals in quick succession to
:18:47. > :18:51.overturn what was in danger of becoming dominance by the Danes.
:18:52. > :18:58.Brilliant shot! Hansen, you just can't give him an inch. Allowed to
:18:59. > :19:06.come back inside Olsson, took out Dipanda. Nikola Karabatic coming out
:19:07. > :19:12.a bit late but he was still deep, nine metres is. Ten goals all the
:19:13. > :19:19.twin Denmark and France, very high-scoring match. Mortensen, out
:19:20. > :19:25.on the wing. Little by me back inside and now Denmark will slow it
:19:26. > :19:28.down again. -- a little dummy. France very quick to cover what was
:19:29. > :19:34.going to be a fast break goal otherwise, because both teams like
:19:35. > :19:37.to play quick handball. As the substitution is make a Fabregas
:19:38. > :19:41.hangs in the middle, hoping that Hansen might not be looking when he
:19:42. > :19:49.tries to make a pass to the oncoming to players. So far there is nothing
:19:50. > :19:53.in it between these two teams. 10-10, 18 and a half minutes played.
:19:54. > :20:00.Denmark leaving the goalkeeper in for the first time, ten minutes
:20:01. > :20:05.played. The shock came in from quite long-range, probably saw it from
:20:06. > :20:10.quite a long way. Incomes Narcisse. The whistle had already gone, he was
:20:11. > :20:19.fouled as he tried to break through the defence. The French fans
:20:20. > :20:27.chancing on the back of that save for the Thierry Omeyer, using his
:20:28. > :20:32.nickname. It's beginning to resemble a bit of a 3- to- one. Narcisse
:20:33. > :20:41.nearly left the door open, as Karabatic goes through. He's got a
:20:42. > :20:46.huge jump on him. They waited patiently and surely and Panda
:20:47. > :20:54.finishes off the job with his second goal. Nicely played. Here goes
:20:55. > :20:59.Hansen, goes for it, saved by Omeyer! Another stop by the French
:21:00. > :21:08.goalkeeper. Omeyer still having to make the stop. Listen to that, the
:21:09. > :21:15.chance is coming from the French fans for him. We've got just ten
:21:16. > :21:22.minutes left now in this first half. Denmark 10-11 France. Denmark
:21:23. > :21:28.thought they had the ball, but Dipanda was sent flying. It may have
:21:29. > :21:34.been for the foul on the two players trying to put the block on. It was a
:21:35. > :21:42.shot on the back of Karabatic and that was a handoff as a result. It
:21:43. > :21:50.goes in on the line. Karabatic, swings! Oh! He wants to be changed,
:21:51. > :22:00.has he taken a knock, I wonder, Nikola Karabatic? He turns and fires
:22:01. > :22:04.past the goalkeeper. Larsson gets a bit of a talking to from
:22:05. > :22:09.Gudmundsson. Now it is France who have the 2-goal margin. Look how
:22:10. > :22:23.quickly, who was bad, Fabregas, came out to try and cover Olsen.
:22:24. > :22:34.The younger Karabatic brother has moved to the central position. Oh!
:22:35. > :22:41.That is so cheeky, his second goal, Toft. The goalkeeper comes out he
:22:42. > :22:46.runs it off his fingertips and over the keeper. Denmark back to within a
:22:47. > :22:57.goal. Eight and a half minutes left in the first half. Dipanda, back
:22:58. > :23:01.inside. N'Guessan has come back into that position, N'Guessan shoots and
:23:02. > :23:07.it's blocked by Toft and will be a corner throw to France. He has come
:23:08. > :23:18.on for the charismatic Nikola Karabatic. Plays for is a French
:23:19. > :23:27.team but he has been signed up by Barcelona for next season. He goes
:23:28. > :23:32.out to the far side, the carpeted area, picks up all kinds of debris
:23:33. > :23:38.and fluff and changes over. Two relative newcomers to the French
:23:39. > :23:43.team. Dipanda on the right side and N'Guessan on the left. What a moment
:23:44. > :23:47.for him to come in. He played in the World Championships in 2013 but that
:23:48. > :23:50.is his only appearance for France in a media event. Dipanda has never
:23:51. > :24:02.played in a major competition for France, making his debut here. Good
:24:03. > :24:12.save, although the shot fairly central for Landin, couldn't quite
:24:13. > :24:18.get it in the corner. It went straight into Landin.
:24:19. > :24:30.Denmark 11-12 France. Seven and a half minutes left. There is
:24:31. > :24:40.Narcisse, sat down. Luka Karabatic on in the centre, and Fabregas.
:24:41. > :24:43.Denmark now try and come forward. Three of the four defenders for
:24:44. > :24:47.France are relative newcomers. I'm not sure we've seen this too often
:24:48. > :24:52.in the Olympics, as the more experienced players look for a bit
:24:53. > :24:56.of a break. Can they hold their own and stem the tide while the experts
:24:57. > :25:07.are resting? Team time-out called by Denmark. Quick instructions needed
:25:08. > :25:58.from Gudmundsson. A lot of the talking done by the
:25:59. > :26:01.assistant coach, Diider Dinard. Some of the experienced players pitching
:26:02. > :26:03.in, but also Dipanda, he has his words to say. A very democratic
:26:04. > :26:26.approach here, they really entertaining first
:26:27. > :26:32.half so far. Denmark now having to work really hard, intercepted, away
:26:33. > :26:38.goes Guigou and he scores! Nothing that Landin could do about that one.
:26:39. > :26:42.13-11. Even if you got a goalkeeper income if you give the ball away in
:26:43. > :26:49.positions like this, you're going to get punished. Well, the odds are
:26:50. > :27:00.against you. Easy goal for him. 2-goal lead restored for France.
:27:01. > :27:09.Mortensen has gone in. Nice follow-up, Mortensen following up.
:27:10. > :27:14.Attacking foul, that's exactly what Hansen was looking for. It looked
:27:15. > :27:18.like a harsh call, I thought he had managed to roll off him. Still
:27:19. > :27:26.complaints from Dipanda to the referee. He says forget it, you're
:27:27. > :27:32.not allowed to charge into the defenders as you try and get past
:27:33. > :27:36.them. The defenders stood still. Then the foul will go against you.
:27:37. > :27:46.Denmark with four turnovers, France have had a couple recently. Hansen,
:27:47. > :27:53.lays it off to Olsen. Tries to get it to Toft, and they do! What is a
:27:54. > :28:01.reaction that is from Henrik Toft. Very impressive. That certainly was
:28:02. > :28:10.a cracking goal. They can out of nowhere. As long as the ball leaves
:28:11. > :28:15.your hand in the area, you're allowed. He started on the wing but
:28:16. > :28:21.has now been moved to the right back position. He has already won a
:28:22. > :28:25.European and world title with France, but still one of the
:28:26. > :28:35.relatively new players in the team. Tries to get away from Hansen.
:28:36. > :28:39.Nothing given, as Landin saves. Still on court 21 for the Danes, he
:28:40. > :28:51.will go off in a second, the defence specialist. And now a chance to make
:28:52. > :28:58.the substitutions, Hansen goes off. We have less than five-minute 's
:28:59. > :29:02.remaining in the first half. France looking to maintain a winning run
:29:03. > :29:06.against Denmark in major competitions, but this match evenly
:29:07. > :29:16.poised, as we knew it would be. That came off the head of Fabregas, but
:29:17. > :29:19.he was holding him in place. The World Championships, European
:29:20. > :29:26.Championships, they are being played in January. This is at the end of
:29:27. > :29:34.the season. Six passes for the Danes. That is two, three... A free
:29:35. > :29:40.throw, and the count is still going. They try to put a ball up for a
:29:41. > :29:47.shot... Oh! Classic! Hansen, they teed him up and he delivered. First
:29:48. > :29:51.goal for him. Denmark bought it back level, 13 goals all. They knew what
:29:52. > :29:56.was coming. It definitely did go over the line, as it bounced down.
:29:57. > :30:06.So good from nine metres, Mikkel Hansen. He wrong-footed, yeah -- he
:30:07. > :30:19.wrong-footed by Maher Omeyer. France with the chance to come
:30:20. > :30:24.forward and take the initiative again, and how they would clearly
:30:25. > :30:25.love to be in front at half-time. Nikola Karabatic coming back on
:30:26. > :30:45.court. In goal for France, Thierry Omeyer
:30:46. > :30:49.still doing well with his 38. I saw the goalkeeper at the side of the
:30:50. > :30:54.court, they have not gone for all seven players up. There is a yellow
:30:55. > :31:05.card for that challenge from Fabregas.
:31:06. > :31:16.Hansen. You just cannot stop those, into the top right and Denmark now
:31:17. > :31:21.are ahead again, 14-13, two minutes on the clock in the first half. No
:31:22. > :31:26.problem for him either. Fires it in with his left hand and the
:31:27. > :31:32.25-year-old from mursigh draws that level again for France. He looks
:31:33. > :31:53.very relaxed. 90 seconds left of the first half.
:31:54. > :32:00.All square here. The Danes, I gain, Hansen, unstoppable, having a
:32:01. > :32:10.brilliant spell here. They are in front. Six goals from nine metres
:32:11. > :32:14.now for Mikkel Hansen. What can they do to stop it? There is less
:32:15. > :32:26.mobility in the defence, they cannot afford to individually mark him.
:32:27. > :32:32.Olsen is a big threat. He shoots wide, does Porte. Denmark with one
:32:33. > :32:38.last chance in the half and they would love to go in with a two goal
:32:39. > :32:44.advantage over at the champions. It will just take their time, not too
:32:45. > :32:49.much or the referee will call for passive play and then they will have
:32:50. > :32:53.six passes to get the shot away. They are going to take as long as
:32:54. > :33:00.they possibly can to give France as little time to come back. 20 seconds
:33:01. > :33:07.on the clock. Hansen, out to Sondergaard. Denmark are two goal is
:33:08. > :33:19.clear and ten seconds less daft -- left. Time-out is called. There was
:33:20. > :33:57.a sprint Didier Dinart to stop the clock. We will listen in.
:33:58. > :34:09.The chest pump between two old team-mates in the French side. Worst
:34:10. > :34:15.case scenario, Denmark for Denmark as they go when leading by one goal.
:34:16. > :34:20.They have eight seconds left, one chance for France. 5- to attack from
:34:21. > :34:27.France for the first time in the game. Turnover. Didn't he do well?
:34:28. > :34:37.The ball carried away as he tried to throw it down the court. The French
:34:38. > :34:41.are asking, what did we do? There was the sound from the bench, throw
:34:42. > :34:46.the ball down the court, still trying to work out what the foul
:34:47. > :34:54.was. He moved like a devil down the court. Fantastic save for him. The
:34:55. > :34:59.end result is at half-time in the men's handball, France's desire for
:35:00. > :35:03.three gold medals in a row will be tested in the second half. At the
:35:04. > :35:11.end of 30 minutes, it is 16-14 to Denmark. France really have
:35:12. > :35:15.dominated the men's handball game, but Denmark have never won an
:35:16. > :35:19.Olympic medal in this sport and they are running the favourites close. We
:35:20. > :35:23.will be back for the second half later on, but there have been a lot
:35:24. > :35:32.of other headlines today and let us bring you up to date. The Kenyan has
:35:33. > :35:37.won the last two London marathons and today got an Olympic gold in the
:35:38. > :35:45.final athletic events of these games. Hawkins finished a very
:35:46. > :35:48.credible ninth. In mountain biking, Nino shirt made it a full set of
:35:49. > :35:56.Olympic medals in the mountain biking. He gets gold here in Rio.
:35:57. > :36:02.Grant Ferguson came home in 17th place for Team GB. And in
:36:03. > :36:07.volleyball, men's volleyball, it was a thrilling bronze medal match
:36:08. > :36:12.earlier and it was won by the USA in a dramatic fifth set decider against
:36:13. > :36:19.Russia. We will bring you the best action from Brazil against Italy in
:36:20. > :36:23.the gold medal match later. But first let us turn our attention to
:36:24. > :36:26.the real central because boxing reaches its crescendo today and we
:36:27. > :36:37.have got the women's middleweight final for you, the USA contender,
:36:38. > :36:49.Claressa Maria Shields is the favourite. Let us catch up with our
:36:50. > :36:58.commentators. The first offer scheduled four two rounds in this
:36:59. > :37:11.final. This contest between boxers who know each other very well, the
:37:12. > :37:17.taller boxer wearing blue is Nouchka Fontijn. The Boxer in red is the
:37:18. > :37:22.ranked boxer in the world and that is Claressa Maria Shields from the
:37:23. > :37:27.USA. Crucial for Nouchka Fontijn to box at range, she knows that. She
:37:28. > :37:31.knows her opponent, they have boxed before. Nouchka Fontijn is boxing
:37:32. > :37:40.the right tactics, she is boxing Midgley -- main -- mainly mid to
:37:41. > :37:44.long range. She will go back to the thinking distance. Remember,
:37:45. > :37:49.Claressa Maria Shields has the speed, she has quality on the inside
:37:50. > :37:51.and if Nouchka Fontijn holds her feet too long, Claressa Maria
:37:52. > :37:56.Shields will come back with defensive shots on the inside. She
:37:57. > :38:01.is one of the fastest middleweight women that I have seen, probably the
:38:02. > :38:09.fastest. Very impressive up until now. Very fast with her hands and
:38:10. > :38:14.feet. Nouchka Fontijn gets through with another good right hand but
:38:15. > :38:18.uses her feet to close the distance. Nouchka Fontijn doing a good job of
:38:19. > :38:26.maintaining the distance but took a big overhand right there from
:38:27. > :38:28.Claressa Maria Shields. Nouchka Fontijn, the reigning European
:38:29. > :38:34.Championship gold medallist adding to the silver medal that she won
:38:35. > :38:47.back in 2011, also the rear -- reigning European games champion.
:38:48. > :38:58.Very good opening round. Nouchka Fontijn opening well, boxing well at
:38:59. > :39:07.range, but as it went on, Claressa Maria Shields getting better with
:39:08. > :39:18.some accurate shot picking. You have to start working, all right? Jab,
:39:19. > :39:25.Java, Java, keep jabbing. Billy Walsh asking her to keep jabbing.
:39:26. > :39:29.Nouchka Fontijn had a good round, particularly in the first half, she
:39:30. > :39:32.was in control, slight change in tactics from Claressa Maria Shields
:39:33. > :39:37.towards the end, she started to get in the -- on the front foot. We
:39:38. > :39:40.might see a change from Claressa Maria Shields, but the judges have
:39:41. > :39:49.gone for a Claressa Maria Shields. Nouchka Fontijn was unlucky there
:39:50. > :39:54.are not to get at least one score. Into the second round we go,
:39:55. > :39:59.Claressa Maria Shields looking to become the first American boxer to
:40:00. > :40:05.win back-to-back Olympic gold medals and when you think about that story,
:40:06. > :40:09.as Claressa Maria Shields starts the round, carrying out Billy Walsh's
:40:10. > :40:13.instructions and targeting the body, but when you think about the calibre
:40:14. > :40:18.of boxer that represented the Star Spangled Banner, none of them have
:40:19. > :40:21.stuck around to defend their Olympic titles. Claressa Maria Shields
:40:22. > :40:27.aiming to become the first American boxer to do so. Slight change, for
:40:28. > :40:31.most of this tournament, Claressa Maria Shields has sat back and
:40:32. > :40:36.waited for the counterpunches. She has got fast reactions and fast
:40:37. > :40:39.hands. If she gets caught with a couple more long-range shots, she
:40:40. > :40:45.will start going on the third, taking the contest to her opponent.
:40:46. > :40:50.It is important that Nouchka Fontijn headset long range. She cannot
:40:51. > :40:56.afford to hold her feet, she needs to maintain that gap. Right-hand
:40:57. > :40:58.success during the course of that exchange for Nouchka Fontijn.
:40:59. > :41:08.Time-out for just beyond the midpoint. She needs her boot lace
:41:09. > :41:16.adjusted, Claressa Maria Shields. Long looping right to the body from
:41:17. > :41:20.Claressa Maria Shields. Nouchka Fontijn working within range, just
:41:21. > :41:25.missing the target, she has to get closer. She gets caught with a
:41:26. > :41:29.faster shot. Claressa Maria Shields across her body with those hoax,
:41:30. > :41:35.very dangerous, very powerful, that is where her strength is, at mid
:41:36. > :41:39.range. Great salvo to body and head from Claressa Maria Shields who has
:41:40. > :41:43.electing to drop her hands and get on her back foot to try and entice
:41:44. > :41:48.Nouchka Fontijn to lead. A quick counter with the right hand. Great
:41:49. > :41:52.work by Claressa Maria Shields again. It is all part of the trap,
:41:53. > :41:57.lowering her hands, she wants her opponent to lead of back row. A
:41:58. > :42:04.little slip with the head and she comes back with fast counters.
:42:05. > :42:07.Skipping back to her corner is Claressa Maria Shields, very good
:42:08. > :42:11.second round of boxing. She swept the opener across the board, Nouchka
:42:12. > :42:22.Fontijn has a difficult puzzle to solve here.
:42:23. > :42:31.Just struggling with the fast counters. Her chin is in the air on
:42:32. > :42:36.the inside, a bad place to be when you are facing a powerful puncher
:42:37. > :42:42.like Claressa Maria Shields. Bent arm work, looks sloppy inside the
:42:43. > :42:47.gloves, but delivering at speed and sometimes for the judges, it is hard
:42:48. > :42:52.for them to see the punches. That one certainly was at the end and
:42:53. > :43:02.Claressa Maria Shields again across the board, Nouchka Fontijn needs a
:43:03. > :43:09.stoppage or a knockout here. Two rounds completed and two rounds to
:43:10. > :43:14.go. Nouchka Fontijn has conceded the opening two rounds unanimously.
:43:15. > :43:19.Claressa Maria Shields made a strong conclusion to the first round after
:43:20. > :43:22.Nouchka Fontijn started very well. And now Nouchka Fontijn trailing by
:43:23. > :43:27.two points from all three judges needs to get yourself back into this
:43:28. > :43:30.contest, what can she do differently to try and become the second boxer
:43:31. > :43:35.to defeat Claressa Maria Shields and the only boxer to do so up to this
:43:36. > :43:41.point in her career was Savannah Marshall en route to her World
:43:42. > :43:45.Championship win in 2012. She has gone about it on the right way on
:43:46. > :43:50.the outside, trying to draw the counters now from Claressa Maria
:43:51. > :43:53.Shields. She has to be quicker with her feet here, Nouchka Fontijn, in
:43:54. > :43:57.and out and she may have to throw caution to the wind, she knows she
:43:58. > :44:01.is behind and she needs to find that more powerful shot. She has to bring
:44:02. > :44:09.her opponent on to the punch to double up power. Not too bad from
:44:10. > :44:12.Nouchka Fontijn with that right uppercut, Claressa Maria Shields,
:44:13. > :44:18.again, the speed element, that is her strength. Very quick indeed, a
:44:19. > :44:22.much improved boxer from 2012, she won the gold in London, remember.
:44:23. > :44:27.Great combination from Claressa Maria Shields, winning that gold
:44:28. > :44:35.medal in London at just 17 years of age, she has improved in the last
:44:36. > :44:39.four years, taking more titles. That is a cracking right hand from
:44:40. > :44:42.Claressa Maria Shields, what a shot. The referee keeping a close eye on
:44:43. > :44:49.Nouchka Fontijn, if she takes to many more of those, standing out
:44:50. > :44:55.count could be issued. She is staying out of punching range,
:44:56. > :45:04.drifting in and out, very fast punches from the girl in red.
:45:05. > :45:09.Excellent stuff. Credit to Nouchka Fontijn, because she took some big
:45:10. > :45:13.shots, she is demonstrating stout punching distance and she was still
:45:14. > :45:18.there, able to exchange as the bell sounded. She is looking to become
:45:19. > :45:26.the Netherlands first boxing medallist since 1992. She is looking
:45:27. > :45:30.to emulate the boxer who took gold in 1928 in the featherweight
:45:31. > :45:36.division but she is facing a tall order now. Going forward, getting
:45:37. > :45:41.caught with shots like that, her chin is a little high. Look at these
:45:42. > :45:44.scores, Nouchka Fontijn trying everything, she has tried
:45:45. > :45:47.long-range, tried on the inside, coming out second best to a very
:45:48. > :46:08.skilful American boxer indeed. So, going into the fourth and final
:46:09. > :46:12.round, the boxer wearing blue, Nouchka Fontijn, representing the
:46:13. > :46:15.Netherlands, needs the punch of a lifetime here because she is
:46:16. > :46:19.trailing by three points on all three cards after three completed
:46:20. > :46:23.rounds of boxing. By perhaps changing strategy and throwing
:46:24. > :46:27.caution to the wind, she could be running onto the powerful, precise
:46:28. > :46:32.punches that Claressa Maria Shields possesses. It will be desperate
:46:33. > :46:35.stuff for Fontijn, but I thought she needed a really good third round,
:46:36. > :46:44.she had to get back into the contest. She took a view risks and
:46:45. > :46:47.she got caught out. The only gold-medallist for the boxing
:46:48. > :46:54.programme as she is demonstrating her defensive prowess now. In the
:46:55. > :47:00.four-year is that followed commercially has emerged as the team
:47:01. > :47:03.leader. Willie Walsh says that whatever Claressa Maria Shields says
:47:04. > :47:06.goes as far as the rest of the team is concerned. She's a wonderful role
:47:07. > :47:11.model for the rest of her compatriots. Again, making Fontijn
:47:12. > :47:17.miss, bamboozling her with that head movement. She's enjoying her work,
:47:18. > :47:23.Shields. Occasionally dips below the waist line, though the referee is
:47:24. > :47:28.indicating just keep your head up, slightly. Still very good skills,
:47:29. > :47:35.very elusive. Lohan is to draw the lead of Fontijn. Not bad but not
:47:36. > :47:43.enough, is it? Claressa Maria Shields lands a cracking right hand.
:47:44. > :47:49.She's landing more hurtful combinations to both body and head.
:47:50. > :47:56.Her father was a fighter. They used to watch videos together. Now she is
:47:57. > :48:02.imploring Fontijn... Fontijn trying to box her own contest at range. The
:48:03. > :48:07.little girl who pestered her father to let her in your late the boxers
:48:08. > :48:12.they used to watch on VHS video together has just made a little bit
:48:13. > :48:16.of history here because she has become the first American boxer to
:48:17. > :48:20.win back-to-back Olympic titles. The improbable journey that began at the
:48:21. > :48:26.age of ten when her father finally relented to her persistent pestering
:48:27. > :48:31.and took her down to the basement gym at the Fieldhouse, has arrived
:48:32. > :48:34.at a thrilling climax here with a second successive gold medal,
:48:35. > :48:37.characterised by someone the full defensive work in the fourth round
:48:38. > :48:42.and some forceful hitting to both the left and the right flanks. She
:48:43. > :48:46.was enjoying herself in that fourth round. Big left hook coming up, that
:48:47. > :48:52.was a cracking punch from Shields. She's the star of the show in the
:48:53. > :48:58.American team, no question. Much improved, speed, power. Yes, she is
:48:59. > :49:10.quality. Ladies and gentlemen, the winner by unanimous decision, and
:49:11. > :49:21.Olympic champion... In the red corner... Clarissa Maria Shields!
:49:22. > :49:26.Clarissa Shields giving thanks after letting out a roar of triumph. She's
:49:27. > :49:30.just been crowned the Olympic champion for the second successive
:49:31. > :49:33.time in the 75 kilograms middleweight division. A series of
:49:34. > :49:38.dominant displays throughout the course of the tournament will see
:49:39. > :49:41.her stand at the Olympic medal podium yet again. She becomes the
:49:42. > :49:46.first American boxer in history to claim back-to-back Olympic titles
:49:47. > :49:50.and at just 21 years of age, as she goes on a lap of honour full speed
:49:51. > :49:56.around the boxing ring, there could be many more to come, so much more
:49:57. > :50:01.to give. She's continuing to improve. One wonders how many more
:50:02. > :50:05.times we're going to see Clarissa Shields trade herself in that Star
:50:06. > :50:10.Spangled Banner on the Olympic stage. At that inclusion of four
:50:11. > :50:15.rounds, Clarissa Shields a dominant victor did take her second
:50:16. > :50:18.successive Olympic title. So, Clarissa Shields retains her gold
:50:19. > :50:24.and we have another gold medal out later on on BBC Four. Joe Joyce
:50:25. > :50:28.looks to emulate his friend and sparring partner Anthony Joshua in
:50:29. > :50:32.winning the superheavyweight gold. But we're going to head back to
:50:33. > :50:37.handball, where we could have an upset on the cards. France aiming to
:50:38. > :50:40.become the first side to win three Olympic handball medals, while
:50:41. > :50:43.Denmark look for their first men's handball medal of any colour. Here
:50:44. > :51:09.is the second half. They have very much got themselves
:51:10. > :51:15.saddled... Lovely play! The defender hesitates, Karabatic is straight
:51:16. > :51:21.through. The pass was on, look at that committee dummies to the right
:51:22. > :51:27.and buries it. Nikola Karabatic scores for France. They trail
:51:28. > :51:37.Denmark by two goals in the Olympic final. 38 minutes to go in this 38
:51:38. > :51:42.-- 28 minutes to go in this 30 minute second-half. Mortensen goes
:51:43. > :51:54.to attack the line and Karabatic goes to attack
:51:55. > :52:06.Larsen. ' guy she got across to it but so much strength on it, fired
:52:07. > :52:17.into the goal of Olsson. Here come France, three goals down again.
:52:18. > :52:32.Karabatic, back again to Narcisse. Narcisse, substituting with Nikola
:52:33. > :52:40.Karabatic on the line now. Space now to go to the wing. Oh! He hangs in
:52:41. > :52:45.the air force along you've got to think he's got wings! He finds the
:52:46. > :52:51.back of the net. Three minutes of the second half. Look how long he
:52:52. > :53:00.holds up there and just fires it off before he lands. Only just before he
:53:01. > :53:03.lands! Very close call. He's been commissioned to design a bracelet by
:53:04. > :53:13.the French Olympic Committee to promote Paris's 2024 Olympic bid.
:53:14. > :53:17.Nice cold, if there is an artist in the team. Artistry on the handball
:53:18. > :53:25.court and now artistry with jewellery. That man is unstoppable!
:53:26. > :53:29.A goal for Hanson. They are just giving him too much room and have
:53:30. > :53:35.been doing for the last ten minutes of the first half. That is a
:53:36. > :53:40.suspension, grabbed around the neck, caught out by his pace. It is brief
:53:41. > :53:49.but it is long enough, and holding from behind anyway. Just going to be
:53:50. > :53:56.a free throw. The French have a penalty. They will get possession,
:53:57. > :54:04.and down to six players for the next two minutes. They just about keep
:54:05. > :54:11.hold of it. He was just about Baha'i and Porte. Porte into Karabatic, who
:54:12. > :54:17.turns and shoots and scores! Denmark 19-17 France. Another goal for
:54:18. > :54:26.Karabatic, who tries to get his Team GB up for this one. He must be glad
:54:27. > :54:30.he's got no sanctions against him. Karabatic, who before the game asked
:54:31. > :54:34.about this third consecutive gold medal and said we haven't really
:54:35. > :54:37.been talking about it in the team at all, we're focusing on this
:54:38. > :54:40.competition. We have a lot of new young players in the team and we
:54:41. > :54:43.don't want to overburden them with history that isn't necessarily
:54:44. > :54:48.theirs. It is about this moment. Sensible speaking from the veteran
:54:49. > :54:51.French back player. Players say that, but I can never actually
:54:52. > :54:57.imagine that is how they think. There is the shot, saved. Especially
:54:58. > :54:59.the five players in question who are going for their own personal gold
:55:00. > :55:06.medal, but maybe it is something they are keeping to themselves!
:55:07. > :55:14.Quietly saying it would be nice, but don't tell the others! There is the
:55:15. > :55:21.shot, deflected wide, I think. Olsen thinks he was pushed in there.
:55:22. > :55:29.Henrik Toft got free, couldn't quite handle it. Karabatic looked to pass
:55:30. > :55:33.to the line, it comes back again! Top corner. As soon as he has come
:55:34. > :55:43.back on again, Nikola Karabatic is having a huge influence on the game
:55:44. > :55:50.and slowly but surely he is turning around. The 20-year-old, whose first
:55:51. > :55:55.major tournament was the European Championships this year... Now the
:55:56. > :56:02.French fans are getting into it, they are the ones you can hear.
:56:03. > :56:21.Denmark now are leading by just one goal. Olsen feeds across to Christie
:56:22. > :56:24.Anson -- to Christiansen. Hanson takes the shot and he was under
:56:25. > :56:29.pressure because the arm was aloft for about 40 passes on the passing
:56:30. > :56:35.chord. Nikola Karabatic shadowing him all the way and then his brother
:56:36. > :56:44.jumping in front. A bit of shirt and a bit of hair, I think. Can't be
:56:45. > :56:52.more than a couple of passes and that may well be it. Fabregas maybe
:56:53. > :57:03.belying his young age and lack of experience. He goes in clumsily when
:57:04. > :57:10.Abalo was already in front. Such a big player, giving them all kinds of
:57:11. > :57:19.grief. Fabregas annoyed with himself, he knows it. So,
:57:20. > :57:25.Christiansen here. Hanson to write back he has been starting there
:57:26. > :57:31.but... There is the chance and there is the goal! The first of the match
:57:32. > :57:41.for Mads Christiansen and it makes the Danish fans happy. On this
:57:42. > :57:49.occasion beaten. Karabatic has got two to mark. Short-handed, taking
:57:50. > :58:03.out their goalkeeper. Narcisse... Closely marked by Toft,
:58:04. > :58:16.defending so well. Took it at the second attempt. First goal of the
:58:17. > :58:19.game. Crossed back in, and Karabatic, if he's not scoring he's
:58:20. > :58:25.providing. He is on the wrong side of Toft. The right side, from his
:58:26. > :58:34.point of view. Found the back of the net. France down to six players. I
:58:35. > :58:39.think Christiansen wanted to shoot but the pass was just above him. Be
:58:40. > :58:47.shot straight into the face of the keeper. Phase two, Nikola
:58:48. > :58:52.Karabatic... He just got in his way answered and waited for the impact.
:58:53. > :58:58.Quick turnover. Karabatic remonstrating. Well, he cut back in,
:58:59. > :59:14.and actually he had stopped moving. Oh! Just wide from Lasse Svan
:59:15. > :59:22.Hansen, and Gudmundsson crouches to his knees and says, how did he miss
:59:23. > :59:25.that one? Lasse Svan Hansen was nearly 80% scoring at one point, the
:59:26. > :59:30.last couple of matches have brought him down, but he is around 70%
:59:31. > :59:34.accuracy, success rate on his shooting. Nikola Karabatic says he's
