:00:53. > :01:00.Welcome back to Rio, everyone, for the 2016 summer Olympic Games. We

:01:01. > :01:07.got this party started yesterday. There had been some question marks

:01:08. > :01:13.before the event as to whether the fans would turn up, but they came in

:01:14. > :01:19.their droves and they cheered. That was a fantastic way to kick things

:01:20. > :01:25.off on day one. I'm glad to say that we have got it all to do on day two,

:01:26. > :01:31.14 more gold medals to be one today. We helped Great Britain would win

:01:32. > :01:35.their first gold medal in the men's road race cycling but things did not

:01:36. > :01:39.go as planned for Chris Froome, so it was over to Lizzie Armitstead in

:01:40. > :01:44.the women's event. Preparation has not been ideal but she has been

:01:45. > :01:47.cleared to race. She is here, and she will be going alongside

:01:48. > :01:54.Copacabana hoping to pick up Britain was Mac first medal of the

:01:55. > :01:59.competition. These guys are on their way to the handball arena. We open

:02:00. > :02:08.the gates around 30 minutes ago. You can see the fans already making

:02:09. > :02:12.their way in. I can see that big yellow ball in the sky again beaming

:02:13. > :02:22.down on us. I think it is going to be another matter to day, and the

:02:23. > :02:26.programme is going to be hot as well. This is what is coming up.

:02:27. > :02:34.First in the Olympic alphabet we will be at the archery, with Korea

:02:35. > :02:38.looking to add to their enviable tally in the team event. Table

:02:39. > :02:45.tennis brought medals for the home nations at the Commonwealth Games

:02:46. > :02:51.but can the British break the Chinese stranglehold in this event?

:02:52. > :02:58.We will check into the home of volleyball, the Maracanazinho is

:02:59. > :03:01.where France take on Italy. Approaching the knockout stages of

:03:02. > :03:05.the women's rugby sevens, Great Britain had a positive first day.

:03:06. > :03:14.Can they hit their stride on day two? And the world number one,

:03:15. > :03:23.looking for a first ever Olympic gold medal, he goes in the C1 to

:03:24. > :03:31.knowing. Here is how your afternoon of day two is looking. The archery

:03:32. > :03:36.is first up. Then we will see Liam and Paul on the table tennis. We

:03:37. > :03:43.have volleyball, rugby sevens and finishing this afternoon with the

:03:44. > :03:48.canoe slalom. If you check in and see how our friends on BBC One are

:03:49. > :03:51.getting on this afternoon, they are recapping a busy evening in a

:03:52. > :03:58.swimming yesterday. We saw Hannah Miley of Britain coming so close to

:03:59. > :04:07.what would have been the first gold medal, she came fourth in the IM.

:04:08. > :04:11.And we will be going to the Lagoa Stadium to check in on the rowing.

:04:12. > :04:18.It had been delayed because of the weather. We saw Botes capsizing

:04:19. > :04:23.yesterday. Is he upside down or is that just a reflection? They are

:04:24. > :05:04.playing tricks on me. The rowing is next on BBC One.

:05:05. > :05:11.Witness the fitness of Adam Peaty. He was in perfect working order

:05:12. > :05:15.yesterday breaking another world record in the 100 m breaststroke

:05:16. > :05:19.heat. He will be going in the final tonight in the Aquatic Centre right

:05:20. > :05:24.there, may be looking to add another world record and most importantly an

:05:25. > :05:31.Olympic gold medal to his ever bulging trophy cabinet. I think we

:05:32. > :05:38.are set for a 2:50am start for that with Adam Peaty. On day two on BBC

:05:39. > :05:50.Four, we are kicking off with archery, and the team event. No

:05:51. > :05:55.British involvement in this in the team event. It is happening at the

:05:56. > :06:01.specially converted Sambodromo venue. If you take yourself back six

:06:02. > :06:07.months to the day, this venue was the site of the Rio Mardi Gras

:06:08. > :06:11.carnival. Have a look at the light and colour going on, thousands of

:06:12. > :06:16.samba dancers strutting their stuff down the Sambodromo runway with lots

:06:17. > :06:22.of flags and colourful costumes on show. It is all standard at this

:06:23. > :06:26.annual festival. It feels slightly different for the duration of the

:06:27. > :06:33.games down there. Celebrations are more controlled, back on Friday, the

:06:34. > :06:38.South Korean world champion took the first world record of the real

:06:39. > :06:44.Olympics with a perfect score of 700 in the ranking round. In archery the

:06:45. > :06:53.ranking round happens in the individual and team event and it

:06:54. > :07:00.exceeded the mark by one of 699, the set by his countrymen in London

:07:01. > :07:04.2012. Korea are hot on this sport. They could only come away with the

:07:05. > :07:08.team bronze four years ago. On the first day they worked their way into

:07:09. > :07:14.the gold medal match against USA and, in the end, it was a Korean

:07:15. > :07:18.walkover. Only three arrows missed during the whole match in the

:07:19. > :07:23.perfect score ten as they ran out winners by six sets to melt. For

:07:24. > :07:31.Team USA it was a team silver, just as it was in London but Korea left

:07:32. > :07:38.this samba drone celebrating. As you can see from that demonstration lots

:07:39. > :07:42.of control and precision. It is anything but just pointing and

:07:43. > :07:51.shooting in this sport, as Darren Campbell found out recently. As the

:07:52. > :07:54.Lord's Cricket ground posted the archery 2012, the pressure was on

:07:55. > :08:00.Rio to find a spectacular venue. Step forward the Sambodromo. During

:08:01. > :08:05.the Rio carnival 90,000 people fully stands for half a mile. Having just

:08:06. > :08:12.walked into the arena the first thing that strikes you is the heat.

:08:13. > :08:19.It is so, so hot. The target to the shooting line is 70 metres away and

:08:20. > :08:25.as you stand here, you can feel the sun on your back. In this arena, the

:08:26. > :08:29.cloud -- the crowd feel so close you feel like you can touch them and

:08:30. > :08:34.feel every single breath. You can see Christ the Redeemer over there.

:08:35. > :08:39.Is it your time? You have 20 seconds to release your bow, and failure to

:08:40. > :08:44.release the bow will result in a penalty. You can just see the

:08:45. > :08:48.Winsock, slightly picking up, you cannot wait for it to be still, a

:08:49. > :08:53.red card is what you will receive. It is not like football, you will

:08:54. > :08:59.not be sent off, but what you will lose by receiving a red card is your

:09:00. > :09:05.highest score from that set. You have to hit the target within one

:09:06. > :09:10.second at 140 mph. From the shooting line I couldn't even see the medal

:09:11. > :09:16.target, but now I am this close, it is about the size of a DVD. And the

:09:17. > :09:21.best archers will actually hit this little cross. Ridiculous. It would

:09:22. > :09:26.be wrong to come to such a fantastic venue without having a go myself. I

:09:27. > :09:33.need a little bit of coaching and help from my main man, Chris. The

:09:34. > :09:39.main guy. You were involved in London 2012 and you will be involved

:09:40. > :09:43.in Tokyo. What is this place like? It is amazing. It has never been

:09:44. > :09:49.used for sport before, this is its first timers sporting venue. There

:09:50. > :09:52.have been some challenges there. It has fantastic history. It is in the

:09:53. > :10:00.culture of Brazilians with the carnival and they are trying to

:10:01. > :10:06.bring that same carnival right here. When you draw back the bow, keeping

:10:07. > :10:11.this arm still, looking straight down, and creating no movement so

:10:12. > :10:16.you can see down the target, it is about Bordill. It is about hitting

:10:17. > :10:19.it when you can, it is not so much depending on muscles but on

:10:20. > :10:23.controlling your breathing and mental ability and to be able to hit

:10:24. > :10:27.that tend when you need to forget that gold medal. So it is about

:10:28. > :10:34.breathing and mind control. Don't fight it but use it. Straighten the

:10:35. > :10:41.arrow, point to the target, bring this to your right eye. In the

:10:42. > :10:52.middle, and relax. You have got and nine. That is not bad! Darren

:10:53. > :10:57.Campbell, good at everything, the Olympians just make you angry? Time

:10:58. > :11:01.ran out for Darren to qualify for Rio 2016, but this is how the

:11:02. > :11:07.women's team event is going right now. We are looking for four more

:11:08. > :11:16.teams from the four remaining fixtures there. The quarterfinals

:11:17. > :11:21.continue and we will see the gold medal match after nine o'clock.

:11:22. > :11:26.Let's get ourselves over to the Maracana right now, because the

:11:27. > :11:32.woman's team quarter final eliminator is underway. We will

:11:33. > :11:37.watch Mexico taking on Georgia. Mexico are in the second set a

:11:38. > :11:54.leading 1-0. And Charlie can take us through this one.

:11:55. > :12:16.That was nine. Qualified the highest of the Georgians in the ranking

:12:17. > :12:22.round, Esebua. A maximum of 720 in the ranking round. The teams are

:12:23. > :12:31.ranked by the total of the archers combined. Narimanidze open bid seven

:12:32. > :12:59.in the first set. 22 years of age, and Valencia

:13:00. > :13:07.continues on her way. She is 21. This is Bayardo. Very consistent

:13:08. > :13:23.from the Mexican team. Valencia are all tens, Bayardo all nines. What

:13:24. > :13:33.can she start with the? Nine. -- with here. We are at the midpoint of

:13:34. > :13:44.the second set. Identical arrows for Narimanidze,

:13:45. > :14:23.seven and nine. Esebua, nine. So, a total score of 52, improvement

:14:24. > :14:38.on their first set. Will it be enough? Valencia, all things so far.

:14:39. > :14:44.She continues with her form. This is excellent shooting from Valencia,

:14:45. > :14:57.the 21-year-old. She qualified eighth in the ranking round. No

:14:58. > :14:58.smiles for her. Bayardo. Ten. The Mexican team are shooting really

:14:59. > :15:26.well here. Just five required for the second

:15:27. > :15:35.set. Ten, ten, ten, full house for Mexico. They take the second set,

:15:36. > :15:40.58-52. A first ten for Roman and Mexico are in fine form. Just one

:15:41. > :15:50.arrow in 12 outside of the gold. That was from Roman. Six tens from

:15:51. > :15:54.12 arrows for Mexico. Just the one for Georgia with their 12 arrows. A

:15:55. > :16:19.long road back now. For Georgia. Super slow motion, that was the

:16:20. > :16:28.eighth. From the first set. Perfect concentration. Look at that grouping

:16:29. > :16:39.from the Mexican team. Bavaria getting a high-5 from Valencia.

:16:40. > :16:52.Fantastic view of the venue. Confirmation, Mexico 4-0 up.

:16:53. > :17:10.Third set them off this first women's team archery event. Georgia

:17:11. > :17:14.are two sets down. They need to win this set. Nothing else will do. Draw

:17:15. > :17:25.and they will be out of the competition. Lobzhenidze, starting

:17:26. > :17:42.with an eight. They stepped to the shooting line, needing golds. Nine.

:17:43. > :17:48.Better, from Esebua. The target, 122 centimetres, 70 metres away. The

:17:49. > :17:58.size of a DVD when you are standing up to it. From 70 metres, a very

:17:59. > :18:03.small target. Extend your arm, put up your phone, and that will cover

:18:04. > :18:09.the entire target. That's how far away it is, how skilful these

:18:10. > :18:18.athletes are. 26, Georgia, from the first three arrows. Valencia. She

:18:19. > :18:23.has short perfectly. And that is a ten. Just. She continues her magic

:18:24. > :18:36.form. No wonder she was smiling. Looking very relaxed up on the

:18:37. > :18:45.shooting line. Bayardo. Ten. The Mexican three will not want this to

:18:46. > :19:01.end. Forts herself a little smile. -- affords herself. Nine. Roman.

:19:02. > :19:16.Georgia, who were fifth at the last World Championships. Really

:19:17. > :19:21.struggling here. That is better. Lobzhenidze, her second ten of the

:19:22. > :19:29.match, and Georgia's second ten of the match.

:19:30. > :19:48.That is much better. Esebua, with a ten. The clock ticking down on

:19:49. > :20:00.Narimanidze. She gets it away and it is a nine. That is a much better

:20:01. > :20:05.set. It puts the target up to 55. 55 would be good enough for Mexico to

:20:06. > :20:16.progress. If Valencia continues her form... Well, she drops off. And

:20:17. > :20:19.eight, first outside the gold for Valencia. It means they can only

:20:20. > :20:32.dropped one more point with the next two arrows. Bayardo. Ten. So Roman

:20:33. > :20:38.needs to find the gold to put Mexico through. Nine will halve the set and

:20:39. > :20:56.make it 5-1. Ten will give them a 6-0 victory. Ten. Enough to give

:20:57. > :21:03.Mexico the two points and a place in the next round against Chinese

:21:04. > :21:09.Taipei. It was a comfortable victory in the end. Really based on the

:21:10. > :21:16.shooting of Valencia. Five tends from six arrows. It just relieved

:21:17. > :21:42.the pressure on her team-mates. Excellent, from Mexico. They win by

:21:43. > :21:46.six set points to nil. They will be full of confidence going into their

:21:47. > :21:51.quarterfinal in the second session. We are just waiting for the judges

:21:52. > :21:54.to confirm the scores. The line judge is waving to both teams

:21:55. > :22:07.meaning the score has been confirmed, Mexico go 36-0. -- go

:22:08. > :22:10.through 60. Congratulations to Mexico who go

:22:11. > :22:20.through with a pretty convincing win over Georgia. Before we watch Japan

:22:21. > :22:26.versus Ukraine in the next elimination for the quarterfinals,

:22:27. > :22:34.some time to show you the eventing from yesterday. Taking part for

:22:35. > :22:38.Great Britain, William Fox-Pitt, competing in his fifth Olympics, and

:22:39. > :22:42.really just happy to be here after suffering a horrendous fall in a

:22:43. > :22:48.cross country event at the end of last year. He was put into an

:22:49. > :22:53.induced coma, came back, recovered, and just months later is

:22:54. > :22:57.unbelievably competing, here at Rio. He made a very good start yesterday,

:22:58. > :23:01.let's look and see how he got on in the very first event of the three

:23:02. > :23:08.event programme. He got started in the dressage.

:23:09. > :23:23.William Fox-Pitt riding is number two with Christopher Stone's Chilly

:23:24. > :23:31.Morning. It looked like a straight entry and

:23:32. > :23:46.a nice square hole. -- halt. The judges loved eight across-the-board

:23:47. > :23:50.-- loved it. For Britain to really be in here and

:23:51. > :23:57.they need something in the 30s from William. Britain have not won an

:23:58. > :24:05.Olympic gold since 1972 in Munich. Came close with silver in London.

:24:06. > :24:09.The team manager, since 1999, it has always been history to win an

:24:10. > :24:11.Olympic gold. This will be his last chance when he steps down after this

:24:12. > :24:30.event. An extended trot. Little bit flat

:24:31. > :24:42.toward the end. Still getting sevens.

:24:43. > :24:49.Certain, William, with all his knowledge and experience, and indeed

:24:50. > :24:58.the knowledge and experience of Chilly Morning, a great combination

:24:59. > :25:05.out there. Lovely big steps in the walk.

:25:06. > :25:46.Remember the lead up, the only one in the 30s at the moment, Santano,

:25:47. > :25:54.at this stage, doing 75%. William, doing 74%. Getting very good marks

:25:55. > :26:02.for the counter. His counter is one of the best we have seen all day, I

:26:03. > :26:17.think. Still getting lots of sevens and eights. A mixed reaction to the

:26:18. > :26:20.flying change, five, six .5, seven. The points were coming back that

:26:21. > :26:27.they are very pleased with the dressage test, expected a good

:26:28. > :26:30.result and dressage, but cross-country is bigger than

:26:31. > :26:38.expected, Australia expecting a little bit of a wild card situation

:26:39. > :26:42.from Santano. He is bound to say that. He is on a young horse. It

:26:43. > :26:47.will be to fool the opposition into thinking they can overcome his lead.

:26:48. > :26:50.But I think in his hands he does not have a problem. That was a much

:26:51. > :27:09.better second change from William. Getting some eights. 8.5. It is

:27:10. > :27:19.bringing up the percentage with every movement now. Another very

:27:20. > :27:25.expressive change. Actually, the average has gone above, currently,

:27:26. > :27:31.that of Christopher Byrne. Well, this could be interesting. The last

:27:32. > :27:37.set of marks could be absolutely crucial. There is the back-up team

:27:38. > :27:41.for William, my word, they have done a great job to get the horse and

:27:42. > :27:50.rider hurt to the start line. And the final salute. Eight, eight,

:27:51. > :27:58.eight. William and Chilly Morning just could not come up with the

:27:59. > :28:04.goods. A lot of very good work from William and Chilly Morning but I

:28:05. > :28:10.just felt he picked up the standard at the end in the counter work. It

:28:11. > :28:18.got better and better. The marks show that. The last set of marks we

:28:19. > :28:21.are waiting for will be key. To whether he goes ahead of Christopher

:28:22. > :28:29.Burton, or, I suggest, just in behind. 40 is just what Britain

:28:30. > :28:36.would want at this stage of the competition. You can see the change,

:28:37. > :28:37.lovely expression, right off the ground, never altering rhythm or

:28:38. > :28:57.balance. And a relieved William. Anxious moments, William, quite

:28:58. > :29:15.unperturbed, saying good luck to the next competitor. As the big

:29:16. > :29:21.scoreboard goes quiet. 36.9. He goes into the lead, the best news yet for

:29:22. > :29:32.Britain! That really does put them in the game, with two more riders to

:29:33. > :29:35.come in the dressage phase tomorrow. What an incredible way to start your

:29:36. > :29:44.campaign, could it have gone any better? It was a great start. Chilly

:29:45. > :29:49.Morning, such a special horse, I have had him in many years, he is my

:29:50. > :29:54.mate. He really went in there and was confident and relaxed and gave

:29:55. > :29:58.that impression. We have worked so hard, Tracy Robinson, my trainer,

:29:59. > :30:01.she really helped me through my injury, to get me back on track and

:30:02. > :30:08.thinking straight, she has been brilliant. That was down to her. I

:30:09. > :30:14.have had an interesting few months. Thank you so much, UK sport and the

:30:15. > :30:17.lottery, we have had support, funding, support physically and

:30:18. > :30:21.mentally, to get me back. I'm just lucky to be here. I know that you

:30:22. > :30:31.said you'd never doubted you would be ready in time. You always wanted

:30:32. > :30:37.to be back for Rio, but did it feel special riding into the arena today?

:30:38. > :30:41.Very special. I have done five Olympics. They have all been

:30:42. > :30:48.useless, so it would be great if this went well. And he is 16, it is

:30:49. > :30:53.the end of his career, after the journey we have had, it was a big

:30:54. > :30:57.moment. But I was not thinking about that when I was in there. I was on

:30:58. > :31:02.the job. I have been so lucky to have all that support. Yes, at times

:31:03. > :31:08.you thought, it is coming around quite fast. Last November I thought,

:31:09. > :31:14.August is ages away. Then suddenly it was round the corner. So I have

:31:15. > :31:21.just got back, just sharpened up, my eyesight has come back, I feel good.

:31:22. > :31:25.You have conquered the bigger cross-country courses than the one

:31:26. > :31:29.we have got here, but this is quite tough for an Olympic course. It is,

:31:30. > :31:36.it would be the toughest Olympic course I have ever ridden. He has

:31:37. > :31:41.answered questions, we thought he would, I wanted to say that we hoped

:31:42. > :31:46.he would, but he has been amazing. We got some questions and I would

:31:47. > :31:53.say it was quite serious. I'm glad that I am on such an old expert, and

:31:54. > :31:56.I hope that I don't let him down. What an incredible demonstration

:31:57. > :32:00.from the former world number one, who is the number one after day one.

:32:01. > :32:04.There is more precise the calm before the cross-country and

:32:05. > :32:08.dressage, but William Fox-Pitt says he's to be here. No doubt, the

:32:09. > :32:13.competitor in him will be going for the top honours as the competition

:32:14. > :32:19.continues. We are going to head back to the archery. Earlier, we saw

:32:20. > :32:24.Mexico make their way to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win over

:32:25. > :32:31.Georgia. Next up, Japan against Ukraine. Ukraine with a finalist in

:32:32. > :32:36.the test event in Rio early on in the year. We will see how these two

:32:37. > :32:54.get on. The commentary from Charlie Broome.

:32:55. > :33:21.Marchenko opens with a nine. Pavlova.

:33:22. > :33:38.The score of 26 in the midpoint of this first set. Japan set for their

:33:39. > :33:57.first three arrows. Ten! Great start for Karen Acca. -- Kawanaka. Yuki

:33:58. > :34:22.Hayashi, within eight. -- with an eight. Saori Nagamine. Seven. Japan

:34:23. > :34:28.behind by one after the first three arrows of this first set. Veronika

:34:29. > :34:52.Marchenko. Ukraine beat Georgia in the European

:34:53. > :35:04.gold medal match in May. 94 Pavlova. -- nine, four Pavlova.

:35:05. > :35:15.Ten. Almost right on the spine and in the circle, ten for Lidiia

:35:16. > :35:25.Sichenikova. Kawanaka, under pressure, delivers

:35:26. > :35:46.her second ten of the match. Japan can only afford to drop one

:35:47. > :35:54.point in these last few arrows. They need two tends to win it. Point

:35:55. > :36:04.drop, so, then required for Nagamine. She got seven with her

:36:05. > :36:10.first arrow. -- ten required. You can see the clock ticking down.

:36:11. > :36:28.Nine. Not enough. And so Japan lose the opening set by a solitary point,

:36:29. > :36:44.54-53. Ukraine, not a bad start. A couple of lines. -- nines.

:36:45. > :37:01.Seven from Nagamine in her first rotation. Plenty of support for

:37:02. > :37:07.Japan. They are behind on the scoreboard. They will go first in

:37:08. > :37:50.this second set. Set two. The woman's team archery

:37:51. > :38:08.event, a matchup between Japan and Ukraine, Ukraine taking the first

:38:09. > :38:19.set, 54-53. Kawanaka with an nine. Hayashi.

:38:20. > :38:24.Now, what can Nagamine find with her first arrow? Seven and nine in the

:38:25. > :39:18.first set. Nine, 27. A little wide from Pavlova. So, a

:39:19. > :39:29.bit of pressure on Lidiia Sichenikova.

:39:30. > :39:36.Another nine, but they are down by one point. 27-26 after the first

:39:37. > :40:14.rotation. Ten. The first ten of the second

:40:15. > :40:25.set, the first ten of the match for Hayashi.

:40:26. > :40:39.Quick release, and a nine, 55 the target for Ukraine. The best they

:40:40. > :40:46.can get is 56. They need perfection if they want to win the set. And now

:40:47. > :41:14.they need perfection to tie the set. Just too high so Japan will level

:41:15. > :41:17.things up in this second set. Let's see what -- no matter what Lidiia

:41:18. > :41:28.Sichenikova can score here. She finds the ten. It is not enough. But

:41:29. > :41:35.the second consecutive set Ukraine score 54, but this time Japan score

:41:36. > :41:36.55 and it is two set points apiece, the Olympic bronze medallists from

:41:37. > :42:05.four years ago. The second match of the women's team

:42:06. > :42:06.archery event is evenly poised, Japan and Ukraine with two set

:42:07. > :42:33.points apiece. The scores tied, two set points

:42:34. > :42:41.each, Ukraine shoot first, this first set on target two. The

:42:42. > :42:47.countdown proper is on, there is the food. That allows Marchenko to step

:42:48. > :43:04.forward from the waiting line to the shooting line. Nine. We are going to

:43:05. > :43:15.have four sets in this match, the first of five. The set points in the

:43:16. > :43:26.two columns of numbers in the top left of the screen on the left.

:43:27. > :43:36.Eight, four Pavlova. Now, Sachin kova. -- Lidiia Sichenikova. Just

:43:37. > :43:42.outside the ten ring. She is having a look at the screen, there is a TV

:43:43. > :43:48.screen just in front of the shooting line that the athletes can look at,

:43:49. > :43:57.just seeing if that arrow had hit the ten line, but I think it

:43:58. > :44:10.outside. Penn, good start from Kawanaka. If the judges are not

:44:11. > :44:18.sure, they will score that Sichenikova arrow with a start, to

:44:19. > :44:26.see if it is touching the ten line. -- with a star. Japan, little

:44:27. > :44:27.off-colour in the first set, but they have certainly found their

:44:28. > :44:51.rhythm now. That is an eight. The pressure on Ukraine here. Nine

:44:52. > :45:26.from Marchenko. Eight again from Pavlova. This is

:45:27. > :45:36.just allowing... 22 seconds, plenty of time for Sichenikova. She finds a

:45:37. > :45:38.nine and set a target of 52. That should be well within the capability

:45:39. > :46:05.of the Japanese trio. Nine. A change of order, Hayashi

:46:06. > :46:19.shooting first. This is Nagamine, so they have just shuffled around,

:46:20. > :46:26.Japan. Nine, four Nagamine, and Kawanaka will bring up the Rio,

:46:27. > :46:35.requiring eight or more for the set. It is mine. Japan lead by 4-2 having

:46:36. > :46:48.lost the opening set. They have come back.

:46:49. > :46:57.Ukraine will shoot first once again. Marchenko, who has hit six lines

:46:58. > :47:18.from six are. -- six nines from six arrows. A seven. Not

:47:19. > :47:28.what she wanted. But the pressure on her team-mates. Nine, a whisker away

:47:29. > :47:39.from a ten. The seven could be the undoing. Sichenikova. The only

:47:40. > :47:54.Ukrainian to score a tent in the match so far. That is mine. -- nine.

:47:55. > :48:11.The change continues. So it is Hayashi to lead off. Nine, four

:48:12. > :48:23.Hayashi. A long hold from Nagamine, she finds

:48:24. > :48:50.a nine. Kawanaka. Nine. The lead is two. You feel that

:48:51. > :48:57.Ukraine need 30 to give themselves a chance of staying in the match. At

:48:58. > :49:18.least apply the pressure to your opponents. Nine.

:49:19. > :49:47.Sichenikova. Final arrow at the end. Ten. It sets a target of 53. 26 will

:49:48. > :50:26.be enough for Japan. Nagamine. Ten. That really allows

:50:27. > :50:31.Kawanaka some breathing space. Seven or more required. Seven will see

:50:32. > :50:40.them go through, 5-3. Eight or more... Nine. It sees them go

:50:41. > :50:44.through by 6-2. The bronze medallist from four years ago had a bit of a

:50:45. > :50:52.scare in the first set but once they settled into it they were

:50:53. > :50:53.unstoppable. Crane are out. Japan are into the quarterfinals. They

:50:54. > :51:11.will face Korea. Disappointment, but he will

:51:12. > :51:14.hope they will be back for the individual competition, starting on

:51:15. > :51:27.day three. Just to many loose arrows. They were playing catch up

:51:28. > :51:35.all the way. They lost the set by two. It just goes to show you, if

:51:36. > :51:42.Marchenko hit a nine, it would still not have been enough. They needed

:51:43. > :51:45.more tense, could not get it, and are out of the competition.

:51:46. > :52:04.Confirmation that Japan go through, 6-2.

:52:05. > :52:13.Japan go through to the quarterfinals. We will be back for

:52:14. > :52:37.the second session here on day two here in Rio.

:52:38. > :52:43.Japan make their way into the quarterfinals. We saw Mexico as

:52:44. > :52:48.well, regressing into the last eight. We will keep you abreast of

:52:49. > :52:54.the other quarterfinal eliminators later in the programme.

:52:55. > :53:02.The finals will be decided tonight and it is hard to see past the

:53:03. > :53:06.Korean team winning that one. They came away with both team and

:53:07. > :53:12.individual events four years ago. While we break, I wanted to show you

:53:13. > :53:16.his Olympic rings. Everybody wants to have their photograph taken with

:53:17. > :53:21.the five famous rings. Do you mind if I just pop into your shot, guys,

:53:22. > :53:27.don't worry, we are just live on television back in the UK. I think

:53:28. > :53:32.this is what you call a photo bomb. Do you mind if we just show the guys

:53:33. > :53:39.back home in the UK what has happened here? Yes. We have got a

:53:40. > :53:44.bit of a problem. It was not you guys. It definitely was not them.

:53:45. > :53:49.But whatever you do, don't tell the games organisers. There is some

:53:50. > :53:56.reconstruction to do. Did you ever play Meccano when younger? That

:53:57. > :54:02.could come in handy. Now we will focus on table tennis, and Korea are

:54:03. > :54:12.not bad here either, but really it is China have mastered the craft. 15

:54:13. > :54:16.of 16 available gold medals since Sydney in 2000. They have pretty

:54:17. > :54:18.much taken ownership of the sport. But for the novices, here's how the

:54:19. > :54:30.game plays. Table tennis made its Olympic debut

:54:31. > :54:36.in 1988. It has seen China dominate the competition. Players normally

:54:37. > :54:40.have smooth rubber on one side of the racket to provide spin, and a

:54:41. > :54:46.rougher surface on the other to provide speed. Players like spin

:54:47. > :54:52.during a short because it alters the trajectory and limits the opponent's

:54:53. > :54:56.options for a return. In singles they serve only needs to reach the

:54:57. > :54:59.other side, but in doubles it must cross from the right-hand court of

:55:00. > :55:04.the server to the right-hand court of the receiver. During a rally the

:55:05. > :55:13.ball must be allowed to bounce once before returning it, but it's a fast

:55:14. > :55:16.and furious sport, with players at the highest level having great

:55:17. > :55:21.reflexes, the ball is struck around three times per second. To win a

:55:22. > :55:28.game of singles a player must reach 11 points, but with a two point

:55:29. > :55:31.lead. If not, they continues until this is achieved. Singles and

:55:32. > :55:43.doubles matches are the best of five games. The format of both individual

:55:44. > :55:48.and team events is elimination. So if a person or a team loses a match

:55:49. > :55:53.they take no further part in that competition. So that is how you play

:55:54. > :55:57.table tennis. We will hopefully see Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall

:55:58. > :56:01.later on, show you how they get on in their second match. They are

:56:02. > :56:08.still struggling with the Olympic rings. Does anybody have any glue?

:56:09. > :56:15.Bags of it. We will need some here at the Olympic Park. A few days ago

:56:16. > :56:18.I caught up with the men's table tennis team, also including some

:56:19. > :56:25.walker as well as Paul and Liam. They were involved in an ice bath

:56:26. > :56:28.recovery, they invited me in, I politely declined. But there was

:56:29. > :56:34.plenty else to see around the Olympic village.

:56:35. > :56:39.This is the athletes village for 10,000 athletes from over 200

:56:40. > :56:42.countries. This is their first step to winning Olympic gold. Not least

:56:43. > :57:04.our friends at Team GB towers. Rugby sevens girls are in the house.

:57:05. > :57:12.They seem in good spirits. And why not? They have union jack

:57:13. > :57:18.deckchairs. Mark, I love what you have done with the place. The great

:57:19. > :57:26.thing is you pretty much get a bare space and it is your allotment to do

:57:27. > :57:33.what you like with. Who let in Mark? Give us a wave. Have you not got

:57:34. > :57:42.work to do? The spirits seem really good. Everybody is excited and

:57:43. > :57:50.really pleased to be here. Welcome, how are you finding it? We are

:57:51. > :57:59.excited and it is coming around really quick. Looking forward to it.

:58:00. > :58:07.What is great about the village is if you ever get lost, just follow

:58:08. > :58:14.the flags. Check it out. Over here we have the Scandinavian quarter.

:58:15. > :58:21.Including Denmark, Finland, Sweden, very welcoming as we walked past.

:58:22. > :58:28.Here, Portugal download, up top, Slovenia, feeling the love. That is

:58:29. > :58:45.what it is all about. Bring on the great.

:58:46. > :58:55.You will be hoping this is the sport you will see a lot of the Team GB

:58:56. > :59:02.contingent. All of the sport are encouraged to use this.

:59:03. > :59:16.Richard, had to ask about these guys, this is your team.

:59:17. > :59:18.Your Olympics 2016 team, it is a tight group that

:59:19. > :59:21.It is great, we train together and compete together.

:59:22. > :59:25.We have been doing it for years and this is our sixth trip out

:59:26. > :59:28.here now as an Olympic squad so we have bonded very well

:59:29. > :59:32.and so far we haven't had any major issues.

:59:33. > :59:42.It has just been changed today so it is nice and clean.

:59:43. > :59:48.If it is anything like London, you will see a lot of athletes

:59:49. > :59:53.Team GB will be taking their bed sheets home with them,

:59:54. > :00:09.There you have it, the village in all its glory and by the sound

:00:10. > :00:17.of it, according to the athletes, Team GB is definitely ready for Rio.

:00:18. > :00:30.They are going for 18 snap in front of the Olympic rings. I am photo

:00:31. > :00:34.bombing them. A great spot. Everybody wants their picture with

:00:35. > :00:44.the Olympic rings and there is no shortage of fans doing exactly that.

:00:45. > :00:52.And the Dennis were being that the life of Paul Drinkhall. He got his

:00:53. > :00:56.Olympic qualification campaign underway in the second round. He

:00:57. > :01:06.went up against another veteran, 13 years his senior, and even though he

:01:07. > :01:11.went down by one game early in that round, he came back to win by 4-1.

:01:12. > :01:22.So Paul Drinkhall progressing into the next round. And that next round

:01:23. > :01:26.will take place later on tonight. 5:30pm UK time. Paul Drinkhall

:01:27. > :01:31.taking to the table again, but not before we see Britain's other

:01:32. > :01:34.singles specialist Liam Pitchford. Both of them qualify for Great

:01:35. > :01:40.Britain in the men's team event last time out. Neither had qualified for

:01:41. > :01:46.singles event before Rio 2016. We can hear from Liam Right now. After

:01:47. > :01:51.London I thought I wanted to qualify down there, London was an amazing

:01:52. > :01:55.experience for me. My first Olympics. We got the host nation

:01:56. > :02:00.place but this time I like to the right to be there. I have become

:02:01. > :02:05.more mature in my game. More solid. I have had some incredible results

:02:06. > :02:10.since London. I think that has shown on the world stage as well. We won

:02:11. > :02:18.the World Championship bronze medals. Nobody even expected that,

:02:19. > :02:20.even us, so has been incredible. Individually, Commonwealth Games,

:02:21. > :02:26.picking up the medal must have been a significant step forward for you.

:02:27. > :02:31.Yes, first Commonwealth Games singles medal for an England player.

:02:32. > :02:36.It was an amazing feeling. I wanted that at the start, I said to myself,

:02:37. > :02:42.I want a singles medal. It was a long journey. I lost my semifinal

:02:43. > :02:47.place, but it was an amazing feeling, especially in Glasgow with

:02:48. > :02:50.the home support in. Just looking forward to getting out there and

:02:51. > :03:01.hopefully proving that I belong there. Time to see if he belongs on

:03:02. > :03:14.the Olympic stage. Into the Riocentro pavilions, in Barra. We

:03:15. > :03:18.are in Riocentro Pavilion three. So this campaign begins today. We will

:03:19. > :03:26.watch it in the company of Simon Reid and Paul hand.

:03:27. > :03:38.On table four we await Liam Pitchford of Great Britain, the

:03:39. > :03:45.number 31 seed, with his opponent from Uzbekistan, who has created a

:03:46. > :03:52.just, defeating his opponent on the Czech Republic yesterday. He was

:03:53. > :04:11.taken to the cleaners, 4-2, beaten by Konjaev. He's hoping to

:04:12. > :04:18.produce another upset against Liam Pitchford, the number 31 seed for

:04:19. > :04:21.Great Britain. Obviously, Liam Pitchford goes in as a hot

:04:22. > :04:31.favourite. The statistics in his favour. He must be wary of this man.

:04:32. > :04:37.He is a talented player, the Uzbek. Strange things happen at the

:04:38. > :04:44.Olympics. It is such a crackling atmosphere. You often see these

:04:45. > :04:53.upsets. It is an interesting one, that is for sure. Of course, this is

:04:54. > :04:57.Liam's first match here. He got up by in the opening round. He will be

:04:58. > :05:05.anxious to get cracking. There is a big height disparity between the two

:05:06. > :05:10.athletes. It is unusual to have a man of that height in the

:05:11. > :05:31.top-flight. And he is in the top flight. He is ranked 48. The British

:05:32. > :05:38.number one hoping to carry on. Drinkhall had a fine victory last

:05:39. > :06:03.night over the Serbian, Aleksandar Karakasevic. And

:06:04. > :06:08.no doubt, having a match under his belt, a successful and uplifting

:06:09. > :06:15.one, that will give him a big bonus against Pitchford. And because it is

:06:16. > :06:18.Liam's first match he will be keen to get a decent start but his

:06:19. > :06:24.opponent has been exposed to these conditions. You cannot replicate

:06:25. > :06:29.this crackling environment in practice. It will be interesting to

:06:30. > :06:35.see it Liam can get a good start against this man, 109 spots below

:06:36. > :06:44.him on the ranking list. He was born in Chesterfield. He plays Bundesliga

:06:45. > :06:53.table tennis, the most lucrative table tennis in Europe. Konjaev was

:06:54. > :07:04.third, got to the third round in the Asian championships in Bangkok last

:07:05. > :07:08.year. He has got to the second round in Busan previously. He has never

:07:09. > :07:14.played Pitchford. It will be interesting to see how they match

:07:15. > :07:17.up. You would imagine that he will be swinging with abandon, just

:07:18. > :07:22.excited to be out there. He has nothing to lose, so he will be out

:07:23. > :07:40.there to enjoy himself, you would imagine. The umpire Corinne Stoffel.

:07:41. > :07:46.Liam, of course, made history in the Commonwealth Games 2014, bronze

:07:47. > :07:53.medallist, the first English player to ever do so. He has got a gorgeous

:07:54. > :07:58.backhand, Pitchford, he keeps his elbow vertical for a range of motion

:07:59. > :08:01.and acceleration. This man will be awkward, no doubt about it, the

:08:02. > :08:17.left-hander. He is quick and sprightly. Fast feet. It is a huge,

:08:18. > :08:25.cavernous area, 10,000 seater, this Riocentro three. And of course it is

:08:26. > :08:30.a huge day table tennis, started at nine o'clock this morning and will

:08:31. > :08:34.go on until 9pm. Still, many of the seats have to be filled, but we got

:08:35. > :08:40.a terrific atmosphere last night. One of the Brazilian players had to

:08:41. > :08:43.ask the crowd to be quite. Here we go, Pitchford to begin. -- to be

:08:44. > :09:00.quiet. There is the acceleration you were

:09:01. > :09:14.alluding to. Konjaev in touch with his short game already, keeping the

:09:15. > :09:25.ball very tight to the net. CHEERING

:09:26. > :09:38.Wonderful return, and didn't he make room? Is, he has a very lithe frame,

:09:39. > :09:47.Liam. Look at the really he gets that over there, wonderfully off for

:09:48. > :09:50.an angle. There are bound to be nerves early on in the first match

:09:51. > :10:01.at the Olympics. He lost in the first round at London.

:10:02. > :10:10.The backhand flick working well. Yes, that is the thunderous pace we

:10:11. > :10:10.have become familiar with from Liam Pitchford. Great acceleration on

:10:11. > :10:46.that side. Thoroughly optimistic start from

:10:47. > :10:58.Pitchford. The noise you're hearing is from an adjoining table where one

:10:59. > :11:05.of the top Brazilian players, Calvorano, is playing. Just three

:11:06. > :11:17.minutes into that one, this is the ten o'clock scheduled matches. Andy

:11:18. > :11:22.Rose the menacing presence of Ma Long, the world number one, just

:11:23. > :11:31.above in the draw, if you will. -- and there is the menacing presence.

:11:32. > :11:51.The bat really firing for Pitchford. Very quick to get onto that serve. A

:11:52. > :12:11.good, fast, long serve there. Got the pop-up that he wanted.

:12:12. > :12:22.Fantastic defence from Pitchford and again real frustration from the

:12:23. > :12:27.Uzbek. That was superb from Pitchford, just asking that extra

:12:28. > :12:32.question. And there is the first game safely under his belt, and

:12:33. > :12:37.wasn't he impressive? Dropped the first couple of points then just one

:12:38. > :12:39.more in the game, the game lasting just four minutes, and Pitchford

:12:40. > :12:46.playing a high standard of table tennis. Konjaev unable to get a

:12:47. > :12:51.toehold into the game. Liam did very well from the off. Slight axed

:12:52. > :12:59.coming into it, because this is his first match, but that is a sparkling

:13:00. > :13:06.start for the Briton. Effective in his own serve and also with return,

:13:07. > :13:09.so that will help him settle. Konjaev winning just one point on

:13:10. > :13:15.his serve. Perfectly read via Pitchford. Pitchford, part of the

:13:16. > :13:28.team that won the bronze medal in the World Championships alongside

:13:29. > :13:30.Paul Drinkhall and Sam Walker. This is a heady time for table tennis in

:13:31. > :13:54.the UK. Beginning game number two. You would imagine this fellow has to

:13:55. > :14:06.get some momentum and get a good start to the second game.

:14:07. > :14:33.Again, the trusty backhand for Liam, coming to the fore. You get these

:14:34. > :14:40.pockets of brilliance in table tennis. But, at the moment, this man

:14:41. > :14:46.is being quite contained by Liam Pitchford. And the danger is he is

:14:47. > :14:54.just trying to push too hard and could make some mistakes.

:14:55. > :15:10.This is a game of angles, net balls and awed sort of deflections, and it

:15:11. > :15:24.can just turn in a heartbeat. -- odd deflections. We saw that in the game

:15:25. > :15:26.last night with Paul Drinkhall. The Serbian was getting just some

:15:27. > :15:32.unbelievable runs, but they did not last. I recall them being 9-2 down

:15:33. > :15:57.in the opening game and turning it around, incredibly.

:15:58. > :16:07.And Liam has so many ways to hurt his opponent, he can change the play

:16:08. > :16:38.and vary the attack lines. Does not give the rhythm to Kenjaev. This is

:16:39. > :16:51.much better from the who's -- from the Uzbek. That is two consecutive

:16:52. > :16:58.points from him. Liam, often he has big swings and that backhand and

:16:59. > :17:03.sometimes the timing goes awry. Really doing a lot better on his

:17:04. > :17:10.serve, let's see if he continues to do so, Kenjaev.

:17:11. > :17:32.The serve giving him the chance, and a 3-point lead now for Kenjaev. A

:17:33. > :17:47.fast and long serve causing havoc, and he is on a bit of a run now.

:17:48. > :17:56.There has been such a boisterous atmosphere in the arena throughout

:17:57. > :18:05.the last couple of days. It must be difficult to keep concentration. His

:18:06. > :18:06.opponent yesterday was asking the umpires to do something about it,

:18:07. > :18:20.but it is the same for everyone. That is how it can suddenly turn.

:18:21. > :18:24.Just spilling wide off the edge of the table, then suddenly it gets

:18:25. > :18:33.tighter. Pitchford, with no room for manoeuvre.

:18:34. > :18:59.Two gain points for Kenjaev -- game points.

:19:00. > :19:07.Terrific shot play from Pitchford. Unable to attack with that vicious

:19:08. > :19:30.forehand, Kenjaev. Super play from Pitchford. Two game

:19:31. > :19:35.points saved. He did well to defuse this attack from the Uzbek, who was

:19:36. > :19:49.really throwing it all at him. Tying him up brilliantly. After

:19:50. > :20:01.saving two game points he has one of his own, to take a two game lead.

:20:02. > :20:12.Top class. What a finish to the game from Pitchford. Four success of

:20:13. > :20:18.points. He now has a cushion. Delighted with this. He wriggled out

:20:19. > :20:24.of jail. Jamming up the Uzbek into his body on many occasions, he is

:20:25. > :20:31.normally quite quick, but wonderful flicks into the body, and the Uzbek

:20:32. > :20:39.not able to release the racquet had to deal with that. It has taken a

:20:40. > :20:55.bit of the air out of Kenjaev who seems to have his number -- seemed.

:20:56. > :21:05.Tying him up. The statistics... And Kenjaev having problems with the

:21:06. > :21:13.Pitchford serve. The first to reach four games. Could easily have been

:21:14. > :21:27.1-1, but not to be. Pitchford is in the lead and just two games away

:21:28. > :21:31.from a verse in the round of 16. -- berth. Just that little bit more

:21:32. > :21:37.tidy in defence at the moment Pitchford. That seems to be the

:21:38. > :21:59.standout feature of the match. Mistake on the backhand. Few and far

:22:00. > :22:07.between. He knows he does not want to back away from the table too much

:22:08. > :22:12.and give Kenjaev to play with. It is all about rushing your opponent.

:22:13. > :22:43.Wonderful forehand return. Just loaded with spin.

:22:44. > :22:54.Lofted backhand from the Uzbek. But it is Pitchford who is controlling

:22:55. > :23:02.the match at the moment, controlling the tempo.

:23:03. > :23:13.Again, that same shot we saw earlier on, making room. Gets that big frame

:23:14. > :23:21.out of the way very effectively. He is super agile. Just freed up the

:23:22. > :23:26.room to release the racquet tip. Just thinking how well the green

:23:27. > :23:29.flooring works. We are normally familiar with blue and red

:23:30. > :23:38.environments but the players seem to like this, easy to see the ball.

:23:39. > :23:43.Really good retaliation from Kenjaev, because that looked like a

:23:44. > :23:55.fine shot from Pitchford. Such a deceptive forehand return.

:23:56. > :24:07.The Uzbek is doing really well to stay with Liam, who has the cushion

:24:08. > :24:11.of the lead. Can be a little bit more expensive and imaginative in

:24:12. > :24:18.the way that he plays. Turning his head away as if refusing to be part

:24:19. > :24:21.of that shot. That will go down as an unforced error. He was

:24:22. > :24:30.disappointed after setting it up so beautifully. It is very

:24:31. > :24:34.uncharacteristic, setting up with a backhand return and not able to take

:24:35. > :24:40.advantage. It is his favoured backhand. Pitchford has just dropped

:24:41. > :24:52.off the plateau of form at the moment. He came back from a deficit

:24:53. > :25:01.in the second game, winning four success of points. Still a little

:25:02. > :25:15.bit to do in game number three. -- successive.

:25:16. > :25:30.Giving himself a bit of a talking to. And now one level pegging.

:25:31. > :25:38.Ratcheting up the power, Pitchford. He has good effect, Kenjaev, with a

:25:39. > :25:51.fast, long serve. Pitchford vigilant, ever alert.

:25:52. > :25:57.It was set up for him. Again, the mistake in the backhand. Simple

:25:58. > :26:15.return. You have to admire the way that

:26:16. > :26:18.Kenjaev is contesting this. 190 sport below Pitchford in the world

:26:19. > :26:29.rankings but he is acquitting himself very, very well out here.

:26:30. > :26:33.Just going astray now. He was in exactly this situation in the second

:26:34. > :26:48.game. Pitchford winning it. Two game points.

:26:49. > :26:57.That is very well played from Kenjaev, two Jamestown, the

:26:58. > :27:01.frustration of having a lead in the second game losing it, then he comes

:27:02. > :27:17.back effectively in game number three -- two games down. He will be

:27:18. > :27:28.delighted, as is his coach as well. Tricky, for Kenjaev, he is the first

:27:29. > :27:33.player from Uzbekistan to compete in the Olympics, he does not have much

:27:34. > :27:39.competition at home. Made his international debut aged 14 in 2006.

:27:40. > :27:43.So a tournament like this is an altogether different mindset. He has

:27:44. > :27:48.to do a lot of travelling just to get decent practice and the

:27:49. > :27:51.matchplay, you would imagine. He is doing very well here, to reduce the

:27:52. > :28:03.deficit. It is always interesting how a

:28:04. > :28:11.player can deal, the night before, with a heady win, over his opponent

:28:12. > :28:14.from the Czech Republic. But he has settled in very well here. He is

:28:15. > :28:31.really into this contest now. See how low he got to that. Strong,

:28:32. > :28:41.used his legs. He has got the bit in his teeth at the moment. This will

:28:42. > :28:43.be tricky for Pitchford to counter. Things are looking a little bit more

:28:44. > :28:56.serious. Well played. He has had good effect

:28:57. > :29:06.with the off forehand, Pitchford. Loaded with spin.

:29:07. > :29:16.Good play from Liam, using every inch of the table, spreading the

:29:17. > :29:42.play very well. What a dynamic shot. That was

:29:43. > :29:43.vicious. Snapped right into the body of Pitchford. Evasive action

:29:44. > :30:19.required. That time, super defence from

:30:20. > :30:31.Kenjaev, who is playing better and better now.

:30:32. > :30:39.He really is fully dialled in. He is so alert. Not missing any

:30:40. > :30:50.opportunities to attack. Very frugal in error. That was a terrific length

:30:51. > :30:55.return from Pitchford, loaded with spin, but it was just abused by the

:30:56. > :31:12.Uzbek. Such a whipping action. Thing is getting more and more

:31:13. > :31:15.problematic. We saw the result yesterday, it probably would have

:31:16. > :31:21.surprised him, he would have expected to play someone else.

:31:22. > :31:39.Instead of this guy from Uzbekistan, now causing him immense problems.

:31:40. > :31:49.Really clever work, taking in the wrong way a couple of times with the

:31:50. > :32:01.backhand. Starting to unload a lot of racket head speed here, Liam

:32:02. > :32:03.Pitchford. You sense that this is a critical game, a critical part of

:32:04. > :32:23.the match right here. Pitchford, damping the fire that is

:32:24. > :32:31.burning in this guide. Terrific, he is delighted with that. Three points

:32:32. > :32:45.away from what would be a very commanding position for Pitchford.

:32:46. > :33:10.Well played. Still not out of this. Three points away but it may seem a

:33:11. > :33:28.lot further at the moment. Stacking them up on that backhand

:33:29. > :33:41.side. He had acceleration and angle and a lot of racket head speed.

:33:42. > :33:47.Three points, 43-1. Yes. That was super, to control that when Kenjaev

:33:48. > :33:53.was throwing so much at them, that was a major achievement for

:33:54. > :34:00.Pitchford. He is now a game away from the third round. Having lost

:34:01. > :34:09.that third game, Liam did well to dampen the fire, and hopefully, that

:34:10. > :34:14.now will contain the Uzbek. It is a must win game for him now, if he is

:34:15. > :34:20.to keep this match afloat. Apart from the first game it has all been

:34:21. > :34:27.really tight. And you expect that Kenjaev will be as well. Liam

:34:28. > :34:31.Pitchford has done well to keep changing the attack line, showing a

:34:32. > :34:39.different picture the whole time, because when Kenjaev gets rid, he is

:34:40. > :34:44.ever dangerous. Pitchford's serve causing Kenjaev all sorts of

:34:45. > :34:48.problems in that game. They are motoring along and racing through

:34:49. > :35:00.these games quickly, averaging 5- minute games. I wonder if there will

:35:01. > :35:04.be any fatigue from yesterday's endeavours for the man in blue? Or

:35:05. > :35:23.if there is anything left in the tank?

:35:24. > :35:28.Liam got away with murder there. He popped that up a little bit too

:35:29. > :35:56.high, and Kenjaev able to play it. Very healthy start to this sixth

:35:57. > :36:02.game. 3-0. Looks like Kenjaev has called a time-out. Might have been

:36:03. > :36:06.him, might have been his coach. A good idea. All that they are trying

:36:07. > :36:11.to do is pierce the momentum bubble that Liam has built. He has

:36:12. > :36:17.emphatically. That is what this is all about. Can the Uzbek win the

:36:18. > :36:27.first point after this 60 seconds of stalling, if you will? Years up

:36:28. > :36:32.against it now, and he knows it. -- he is up against it. There was real

:36:33. > :36:40.fire burning in his eyes in that third game. He did look a little

:36:41. > :36:46.disconsolate when he had a run of points against him. Can you dig

:36:47. > :36:57.himself out of this whole? -- can he.

:36:58. > :37:03.Phenomenal acceleration of the backhand. It is a pattern of play we

:37:04. > :37:15.have become quite used to with Liam Pitchford.

:37:16. > :37:21.He is unusually tall for an elite table tennis player, Liam Pitchford.

:37:22. > :37:29.It is not unknown but it is unusual. He stays so low to the table, he

:37:30. > :37:35.keeps the angle in the Nice and is able to accelerate out of that, I'm

:37:36. > :37:36.calling the shoulders against the hips and using some ground reaction

:37:37. > :37:47.force. -- uncoiling the shoulders. It is all going away in a rush for

:37:48. > :38:16.Kenjaev. One last effort, and it is going to

:38:17. > :38:28.be an enormous ask to come back from this. Liam doing very well to keep

:38:29. > :38:42.his foot on the throttle and show his frontrunning skills.

:38:43. > :38:43.CHEERING Not taking anything for granted

:38:44. > :39:14.here. Getting a little ahead of himself.

:39:15. > :39:21.Mistakes starting to come. Still four points vacation. He has a

:39:22. > :39:28.dangerous presence in this one, as in the? He has certainly shown a lot

:39:29. > :39:33.of spirit -- four points of a cushioned.

:39:34. > :39:45.Is that going to be the one that breaks the camel's back? Supercool

:39:46. > :40:03.and rewarded with six match points. Very impressive. A dangerous

:40:04. > :40:08.opponent, Kenjaev with a win already under his belt and it looked any

:40:09. > :40:12.third game particularly that he was going to cause a real problem for

:40:13. > :40:21.Liam Pitchford, but the man from Chesterfield holding firm and

:40:22. > :40:26.winning with some comfort, 4-1. It was a calm and should match from

:40:27. > :40:29.Liam Pitchford, showing lots of character, because his opponent was

:40:30. > :40:35.throwing the kitchen sink at him and was dangerous throughout, Kenjaev,

:40:36. > :40:37.so credit to him for a good performance, but Liam Pitchford

:40:38. > :40:48.looked very sure, mixing his attacks with great effect. Confirmation of

:40:49. > :40:49.the result. He came through very emphatically against a very spirited

:40:50. > :41:04.opponent. Just 23 minutes and Pitchford

:41:05. > :41:12.through to the third round for the first time in the Olympics, and he

:41:13. > :41:19.will play the number nine seed from Korea, that is at eight o'clock

:41:20. > :41:29.local time in Korea. That is terrific for him. He's the number 31

:41:30. > :41:34.seed, the number one, and he came through against an opponent who

:41:35. > :41:39.looked a very lively customer. And because that was his first match in

:41:40. > :41:42.this arena, that was really well played from Liam Pitchford. An

:41:43. > :41:53.impressive performance throughout, really. Every facet of his game

:41:54. > :42:03.firing. The backhand, if you errors, but he will be delighted to come

:42:04. > :42:11.through that match. -- a few errors. He must have thought that he was

:42:12. > :42:17.going to play against Jancarik, and got a big surprise when Kenjaev beat

:42:18. > :42:22.him. He had never played against Kenjaev and you could see the

:42:23. > :42:26.problems he was causing for lots of this match. You have to reset your

:42:27. > :42:31.computer, when you are gearing up for one opponent and another one

:42:32. > :42:39.comes through. It is quite a shock. Next up, a tough ask against his

:42:40. > :42:52.opponent from Korea. Eight o'clock tonight that one. Plenty of time to

:42:53. > :42:58.recover. Now turning his thoughts to a guy who could be very difficult

:42:59. > :43:05.indeed, that is at eight o'clock local time.

:43:06. > :43:09.It is on the website and you can find inspirational stories

:43:10. > :43:11.from people like you, as well as hints, tips and 70

:43:12. > :43:13.practical guides to help you give something a go.

:43:14. > :43:18.There is an activity finder to help you find something to try near you.

:43:19. > :43:23.You can ask questions through the social media accounts

:43:24. > :43:33.and maybe you can inspire someone else to give something a try.

:43:34. > :43:48.Now, we are passing the baton over to you.

:43:49. > :43:56.Let's bring you up-to-date with their headlines and far this

:43:57. > :44:00.afternoon. We showed you Mexico and Japan progressing in the women's

:44:01. > :44:03.team archery earlier. Disappointment for the donation. Brazil have been

:44:04. > :44:11.knocked out and Italy go through the quarterfinals. -- disappointment for

:44:12. > :44:18.the home nation. In the last few moments, India have beaten Colombia

:44:19. > :44:25.at the Sambodromo. They go through to complete the last line up in the

:44:26. > :44:30.women's competition. Success for Great Britain in the fencing, James

:44:31. > :44:42.Andrew Davies moves forward after a win over his Tunisian opponent in

:44:43. > :44:47.the men's foil, Mohammad Fajani. And the weather is playing havoc with

:44:48. > :44:50.the rowing at the Lagoa Stadium. Action has been suspended until

:44:51. > :44:56.further notice. Yesterday we saw the Botes capsizing because the weather

:44:57. > :45:01.was so bad and for the safety of all competitors involved, action

:45:02. > :45:08.suspended until further notice. The weather has been playing havoc with

:45:09. > :45:13.us along the coast in Barra. We have seen, you can actually see a few

:45:14. > :45:21.people holding onto their hats, the flags are flying, it has been pretty

:45:22. > :45:25.windy. That weather out there has suspended the rowing at the Lagoa

:45:26. > :45:29.Stadium. We are going to show you some Beach Volleyball Arena. Or,

:45:30. > :45:35.volleyball, I should say, without the sand, but Brazil are fantastic.

:45:36. > :45:39.In the women's event, they are aiming for a third consecutive

:45:40. > :45:45.Olympic title. In the men's event, Brazil are the world number one

:45:46. > :45:49.nation. There are more players and boys to be won in this competition

:45:50. > :46:05.than in each competition, so he is a guide to volleyball.

:46:06. > :46:13.Volleyball made its debut in 1964, a sport where power and height is

:46:14. > :46:17.invaluable, the court is 18 metres by nine metres, and the object to

:46:18. > :46:25.ground the ball on your opponents side of the court. If a fifth set is

:46:26. > :46:31.required, it is the first team to reach 15. What a team must always

:46:32. > :46:37.win a set by at least two points. The team who win a point always

:46:38. > :46:41.serve. During play a team can only touch the ball three times before it

:46:42. > :46:45.must go back across the net. The high number of different shops. A

:46:46. > :46:49.pump is when the ball is above the waist and does not need a

:46:50. > :46:55.significant change in stance. Eight feet is below the waist and means a

:46:56. > :46:59.lower body position. The set is traditionally the second shot after

:47:00. > :47:04.the bump. It is hit into the air to line up the perfect shot for the

:47:05. > :47:09.third hit, the spike. There is a specialised player. This player

:47:10. > :47:11.wears a different coloured top and can be substituted into the

:47:12. > :47:18.back-court for any player in the team. They cannot serve, Spike, or

:47:19. > :47:24.rotate into the front line positions but they play a vital role in serve

:47:25. > :47:27.reception and back-court defence. There are preliminary and knockout

:47:28. > :47:34.phases with the finalists competing for the gold and silver medals.

:47:35. > :47:41.In the men's competition we have two walls of six teams, the top four

:47:42. > :47:45.going into the quarterfinals. The hosts have been kept apart from the

:47:46. > :47:49.Russian Olympic champions but was ill face competition for the top

:47:50. > :47:54.spot in the group from the likes of the USA. Italy are a really good

:47:55. > :47:59.shout for a medal. Prawns in London 2012. They face France, 11th in the

:48:00. > :48:06.world. They were crowned European champions back in 2014. We go to the

:48:07. > :48:10.home of Brazilian volleyball, and you can expect the home fans to be

:48:11. > :48:15.raising the roof when the host steak and Mexico in a couple of hours. But

:48:16. > :48:17.they seem to be enjoying themselves right now. It is Italy versus

:48:18. > :48:42.France. France in red. They will start the

:48:43. > :48:58.game. Off the block. Italy have the first

:48:59. > :49:14.point. If you win the point you either take

:49:15. > :49:49.the serve or retain the serve. Chance for the 29-year-old, is

:49:50. > :49:52.usually experience, big and strong Ruggier to come into the action. Who

:49:53. > :50:09.can build momentum and get points on the board? Italy, so far. It is

:50:10. > :50:31.going well. And it means so much. These points build up the mountain.

:50:32. > :50:48.-- momentum. The setter Giannelli. A first chance to see Zaytsev who

:50:49. > :50:59.makes his point immediately. Dispatched in style.

:51:00. > :51:11.Working really well for Italy. Dynamic movement, keeping it in

:51:12. > :51:28.play. And Italy go further ahead. 5-0. A real intensity and dynamism

:51:29. > :51:38.to the Italian play early on. The ball went off the block, and that is

:51:39. > :51:40.a point. It is the first time out called by Laurent Tillie,

:51:41. > :52:27.understandably. Italy still have the advantage,

:52:28. > :52:33.still have the serve. The block was strong. They have opened the

:52:34. > :52:57.serving, yet it is 6-0 in favour of Italy. A storming start. Frustration

:52:58. > :53:05.on the face of Kevin Le Roux. Rouzier, going for the tip. Zaytsev,

:53:06. > :53:17.and off the block. France have still to manage a point. This was not in

:53:18. > :53:30.the script. Out of the two teams, France are very much informed. But

:53:31. > :53:35.Italy have them rocking. Le Roux, he still cannot finish, off the block.

:53:36. > :53:43.Frustration now growing on the French side of the net. 8-0. The

:53:44. > :53:45.block was there, but off the top of the fingers, and it was a point to

:53:46. > :54:09.Italy. Zaytsev unleash us. And off the

:54:10. > :54:17.block. This is an extraordinary start. Even the Italians, in the

:54:18. > :54:25.wildest dreams, surely did not foresee this. France are absolutely

:54:26. > :54:31.reeling. Only one serve so far. Zaytsev, 100% Spike rate at the

:54:32. > :54:36.moment, four out of four. And at last. At last. France have their

:54:37. > :54:57.first point. Six minutes into the game. Le Roux

:54:58. > :55:02.four. That does not help his cause. You could see the frustration

:55:03. > :55:09.building up. Nothing has gone for them so far, the spikes have not

:55:10. > :55:26.worked, the blocks have not worked, and now we serve is malfunctioning.

:55:27. > :55:37.Juantorena arrives. And finished. Middle blocker, the captain,

:55:38. > :55:43.Birarelli, crosscourt. No wonder he is shaking his head. They are

:55:44. > :55:52.completely shell-shocked. He almost cannot stop smiling.

:55:53. > :56:04.Off the block. And Tillie we'll have a point. Frankly, France will take

:56:05. > :56:30.anything. Rouzier, to serve. Good loaded per.

:56:31. > :56:48.But there's no answer to that. -- good though Dipper. Laurel Tilly has

:56:49. > :56:59.plenty to do. 12-2 in arrears. They land one. And Tillie we serve.

:57:00. > :57:22.Perfectly set through the block. A crosscourt. France claimed the

:57:23. > :57:40.point. He just pushed it too hard. Cross-court and alt. That was not

:57:41. > :57:43.coming back from Lanza. 13-4. Italy are just seemingly untouchable at

:57:44. > :57:48.the moment. France will have to hang on in here. They will already be

:57:49. > :57:55.thinking about playing for the second set because Italy

:57:56. > :57:56.seemingly... And unforced error. The first of the match. But they are

:57:57. > :58:16.very much in control. The block move across. And does its

:58:17. > :58:27.job. And again they are ready. But superbly placed by the French style.

:58:28. > :59:02.Just behind the blockers. Looking for a serve. -- dip serve.

:59:03. > :59:07.And comes the award-winning Libero. Playing in a defensive role. Cannot

:59:08. > :59:12.come forward into the front court, if you are watching vulnerable for

:59:13. > :59:18.the first time. Cannot serve or Spike and was always stay in the

:59:19. > :59:28.back-court, behind the middle line. There is the Italian Libero.

:59:29. > :59:46.Zaytsev! Off the block, France take the point. Zaytsev, he thought he

:59:47. > :59:56.was through, but N'Gapeth had the block. Strong hit by Zaytsev.

:59:57. > :00:41.And it is time out called by Italy just as France started to come back.

:00:42. > :00:50.From 9-0 down to 14-9, that represents something of a recovery,

:00:51. > :00:52.a comeback. They halved Italy's advantage but there needs to be more

:00:53. > :01:13.work done. Three-man French block. That went

:01:14. > :01:22.crosscourt. The Italians are unhappy about that. The referee absolutely

:01:23. > :01:31.convinced. This looks like being one of the challenges that Italy have

:01:32. > :01:37.available. Two challenges. Two challenges per set. Each team has

:01:38. > :01:41.two challenges per set. If the challenge is upheld, you still have

:01:42. > :01:47.two challenges. If the challenges declined, then you either lose the

:01:48. > :01:51.point and you lose your challenge and you only have one left in the

:01:52. > :01:56.set. At the same time, you wonder why they went for that time out.

:01:57. > :02:00.They usually have technical time-outs after eight points and 16

:02:01. > :02:03.points but in order to speed up the game and this has been under

:02:04. > :02:12.discussion with the Volleyball Federation, the FI BB, how to make

:02:13. > :02:16.the game more user-friendly or visible and attractive to

:02:17. > :02:28.television, they decided to speed it up. So, the challenge was there a

:02:29. > :02:35.touch of the block? And did the ball land inside the lines? Hawk-Eye will

:02:36. > :02:43.give us the answer. There is the answer. France take the point. And

:02:44. > :02:56.Italy have lost their challenge. Only one more to them, France still

:02:57. > :03:03.have two. Off the block. An impressive debut so far from

:03:04. > :03:30.Juantorena. At last! It's taken them a long time

:03:31. > :03:44.to make one count but a spike is over and down. Neat combination in

:03:45. > :03:58.the middle of the net. He serves fast. Tipped over. The Italian blog

:03:59. > :04:03.is there. France think they've won it and the referee says the was a

:04:04. > :04:07.touch off the block by the Italian blockers and France take the point,

:04:08. > :04:18.and the gap is just down to three points. The European champions are

:04:19. > :04:25.coming back. After a shocking start. France have again the chance.

:04:26. > :04:31.Juantorena could have rescued it, he also had to keep an eye out for

:04:32. > :04:40.those barricades around the outside of the court. Off Lanza, there was a

:04:41. > :04:50.chance to get there, but the hoardings were in his way. Down to

:04:51. > :04:55.two. 15-13. This is more like it, with N'Gapeth serving. This has to

:04:56. > :05:11.go over. Three touches either side of the net allowed.

:05:12. > :05:20.Fantastically over the block as well. And Italy take a point, and

:05:21. > :05:46.move ahead again. . Real force. Italy take the point.

:05:47. > :05:53.The second referee detected a fault. And you heard the buzz, it is going

:05:54. > :06:03.to be a technical time-outs. And it looks to be a challenge instead. The

:06:04. > :06:13.players look up to the big screen so France have requested a challenge.

:06:14. > :06:17.Currently, the score is 17-13. If France win this challenge, they will

:06:18. > :06:29.close the gap, the points will be readjusted. So, did that come off

:06:30. > :06:35.the block? Was there a net touch? Hawk-Eye and the officials will be

:06:36. > :06:37.watching. The players, spectators, coaches, officials gathered to watch

:06:38. > :07:05.the screens over the court. France take the point, the scores

:07:06. > :07:06.will be readjusted. 16-14. They still have two challenges left,

:07:07. > :07:39.France. France can close this to one point.

:07:40. > :07:51.And do so! The middle blocker set up and finished. And that huge

:07:52. > :07:57.advantage that Italy once had, 9-0 at one stage, is just down to one

:07:58. > :08:00.point. And it is a time-out called by Italy, and you can understand

:08:01. > :08:24.why. Time to break the French rhythm.

:08:25. > :08:52.Grebennikov was signed as an attacker, and he has made his name

:08:53. > :09:00.in that white shirt that he is wearing for France.

:09:01. > :09:53.Really powerful serve from Rouzier. 18-16. Italy hold their advantage.

:09:54. > :10:02.The captain serves, and it is out. Good decision to leave. Can they

:10:03. > :10:21.draw level? They have the serve. The coach's son, Tillie. That was

:10:22. > :10:37.the block! Came good when he needed it.

:10:38. > :11:08.He's giving France a chance to strike again.

:11:09. > :11:22.Pujol is back at the Olympics. He was recalled to the team. Zaytsev

:11:23. > :11:29.schools. Five more and they will have the first set. The French block

:11:30. > :11:37.was split there. There were big holes in it and Zaytsev took

:11:38. > :11:45.advantage of it. The captain comes on...

:11:46. > :12:02.Here he is. He is an expert Seto, and Juantorena landed with the

:12:03. > :12:23.spike. First appearance for Antonov, born

:12:24. > :12:26.in Moscow, as the name suggests. Became an Italian citizen last year,

:12:27. > :12:38.ready to make his mark for his new country. Dispatched again! That

:12:39. > :12:42.little combination, Little and large, only one middle blocker, they

:12:43. > :12:59.split the Italian ranks, and they have the point.

:13:00. > :13:06.They can't do anything about it when it comes back. Italy move forward

:13:07. > :13:13.again. Three points away from closing at this first set.

:13:14. > :13:29.Frustration for France. Getting closer, but that isn't good

:13:30. > :13:35.enough. They went for the ace down the line. And it is a challenge

:13:36. > :13:50.called by Italy. Their second and final one. If it isn't upheld.

:13:51. > :14:03.So, instead of 22-21, this could become 23-20. Having led for so

:14:04. > :14:12.long, and so dominantly as well, 9-0 at one stage in this first set to be

:14:13. > :14:18.so close at this stage of the game would be very frustrating. Is it in

:14:19. > :14:23.or out? It is in! If any part of the ball lands on that line, that is in.

:14:24. > :14:30.Italy win the challenge, and they still have one more in this set,

:14:31. > :15:14.should they need it. Time-out called by France.

:15:15. > :15:18.Just break the Italian concentration, break their rhythm,

:15:19. > :15:25.Tillie is saying. They have the serve. Anything to negate their

:15:26. > :15:27.advantage. Three points France need. Italy two to close out this first

:15:28. > :15:47.set. A skilful tip, but read by Zaytsev.

:15:48. > :15:53.It was somehow kept in. That surely courtly and ten I, that is not

:15:54. > :16:16.allowed. That means Italy have set point. What a start this has been.

:16:17. > :16:28.Giannelli to serve. One set point saved. Or is that in? Whips out.

:16:29. > :16:34.Italy have taken that first set. An outstanding achievement by Italy. In

:16:35. > :16:40.a way they almost just had to tumble over the line, having led so

:16:41. > :16:44.dominantly, but even so, 25-20. The last time these two teams met France

:16:45. > :16:54.were in complete control but now the French have to regroup and come

:16:55. > :16:59.again. ORE: we have got a match on our

:17:00. > :17:03.hands here. A bit of confusion there but we will come back and see it in

:17:04. > :17:11.the certain set and we will see if France can be close that gap.

:17:12. > :17:15.Earlier on the programme we were in the table tennis watching Liam

:17:16. > :17:19.Pitchford in his opening encounter in the men's singles table tennis

:17:20. > :17:23.and he had never before qualified for the Olympics in the singles

:17:24. > :17:28.competition and he questioned if he was up for this stage but he

:17:29. > :17:32.definitely did against Uzbekistan and he moves into the third round

:17:33. > :17:36.and afterwards we caught up with Liam.

:17:37. > :17:40.I think it is fair to say that was pretty emphatic. You must be pretty

:17:41. > :17:44.pleased with a game like that. Yes, it has been a long time waiting to

:17:45. > :17:47.play that first game and I was nervous at the start but I enjoyed

:17:48. > :17:52.every minute and I was pleased with how I played and to get the win. We

:17:53. > :17:57.saw the crowd afterwards and you have a few new fans. Yes, I took a

:17:58. > :18:01.few selfies the crowd has been amazing and we have been making a

:18:02. > :18:05.lot of noise and I enjoyed playing in that environment. Tonight you are

:18:06. > :18:10.against the number nine seed from South Korea. How do you think it

:18:11. > :18:15.will pan out? Yes, I played him last month in the Korean open and lost

:18:16. > :18:19.4-1 but today is a new day and he is the favourite so I will go in there

:18:20. > :18:25.and play my game and hopefully make a surprise. You have ten hours until

:18:26. > :18:28.your next match, what you do between now and then? I will go back to the

:18:29. > :18:31.village and get some lunch and hopefully a bit of a nap and then

:18:32. > :18:36.start to prepare for the eight o'clock match. Thank you very much.

:18:37. > :18:41.Well done, all the best tonight. If a nap is what he is going for it

:18:42. > :18:45.is a well-deserved nap. He deserves a rest after that victory. A great

:18:46. > :18:53.effort from Liam Pitchford there. We will resume things back at the

:18:54. > :18:57.volleyball. Brazil is the home of volleyball and we are watching Italy

:18:58. > :19:02.against France in their pool A encounter and a few seconds ago

:19:03. > :19:06.Italy, bronze medallists from 2012, took the first set. Can France get

:19:07. > :19:11.back into the set? We will go back for set to.

:19:12. > :19:17.The European champions have been stunned in the first set by Italy.

:19:18. > :19:23.It could have been a lot worse because at one stage Italy were 12-3

:19:24. > :19:27.to the good. Their morale has remained high. It was in danger of

:19:28. > :19:33.being dented because France closed within a point but crucially and

:19:34. > :19:37.significantly Italy had -- held out and France and their star-studded

:19:38. > :19:47.line-up have two regroup and come again. This was not in the French

:19:48. > :19:53.script. Completely dominant in the world league. Barely a month ago in

:19:54. > :20:15.Poland, but so far Italy have turned the tables and they will serve.

:20:16. > :20:20.N'Gapeth is frustrated and you can tell that did land where they wanted

:20:21. > :20:21.and already Italy have a point of the board. France are behind in this

:20:22. > :20:38.match so far. N'Gapeth has a chance and he does at

:20:39. > :20:42.this time, off the block. Like a footballer scuffing a shot in, as

:20:43. > :20:46.long as he scores and it counts, the moment -- at the moment France need

:20:47. > :21:00.all the help they can get just to get a foothold in this game.

:21:01. > :21:07.Juantorena is so impressive in that position. Italy take the point and

:21:08. > :21:18.France complained. Their sound is the buzzer. A challenge has to be

:21:19. > :21:23.requested immediately they feel there has been an injustice, so they

:21:24. > :21:26.don't wait for the end of the rally, they do it immediately. More often

:21:27. > :21:33.than not that does occur at the end of a rally but the coach and the

:21:34. > :21:36.players can't mull over it while the play continues. Was there a touch

:21:37. > :21:51.there? Juantorena thought he had got

:21:52. > :21:54.everything right but Rouzier thought otherwise. France have used the

:21:55. > :22:02.first of their two challenges in this set. Building the drama. The

:22:03. > :22:13.smiles tell you which team has done well so far.

:22:14. > :22:32.France not liking what they see by the looks of it.

:22:33. > :22:38.And France take the point 2-2. The challenge was accepted and France

:22:39. > :23:04.still have two more in this set. The officials are getting a little

:23:05. > :23:07.bit trigger-happy there are now. It is now 1-1. Both coaches agree.

:23:08. > :23:39.Write down the line. -- right down the line. Just over

:23:40. > :23:43.the net. It has come back. That is going to ask a lot of N'Gapeth, it

:23:44. > :23:48.is too much. He hasn't really been able to get into the game at all,

:23:49. > :23:53.N'Gapeth. Our and intensity of the Italian team and the Italian attack

:23:54. > :24:03.has been such that France have been on the back foot for much of this

:24:04. > :24:13.match so far. Giannelli will continue. The set didn't quite work

:24:14. > :24:16.there for France. That was long. But it was a touch and France are up

:24:17. > :24:33.further behind. Le Roux wasn't able to reach over

:24:34. > :24:43.and it just ruffled his fingers, or maybe wrap them such was the power.

:24:44. > :24:46.Italy's lead continues to grow. France with the point. The second

:24:47. > :25:25.official intervenes. Juantorena going for the dip at the

:25:26. > :25:44.end but it dipped beyond the backline.

:25:45. > :25:52.Birarelli the middle blocker, highly potent and it worked for him there.

:25:53. > :26:16.The captain now serves. Zaytsev. But his block goes out.

:26:17. > :26:24.France have a point. Tillie is pretty much the most effective of

:26:25. > :26:29.the French attackers at the moment. N'Gapeth yet to get into the game.

:26:30. > :26:34.Periods, setting and waiting and here he will spike. That block was

:26:35. > :26:39.more than a measure and more of a match for N'Gapeth. The two star

:26:40. > :26:41.players meet on either side of the net and it is the Italian comes out

:26:42. > :26:59.on top. Nine out of 13 spikes, that tells

:27:00. > :27:10.its own story. N'Gapeth that will unload but Italy take the point.

:27:11. > :27:14.There was a touch by France and Italy 8-4. Again they move into a

:27:15. > :27:34.strong lead. France just cannot really make headway. A dipping

:27:35. > :27:37.serve, bishops. Rouzier, one of the rare moments of joy and an

:27:38. > :27:48.outpouring of adrenaline, that has been so much frustration.

:27:49. > :27:56.France can't get into this one at the moment. A neat turn there, quick

:27:57. > :28:13.tip, and the block works superbly, supremely. Work together and

:28:14. > :28:21.Giannelli's hand, his left hand just dropped the ball down and no chance

:28:22. > :28:25.for the French to recover. N'Gapeth receives and now they have blocked

:28:26. > :28:29.out. They have read it every single time, the French blockers. They go

:28:30. > :28:54.for the big hit but it is long. Delay here. It is another challenge.

:28:55. > :29:00.France have requested. Eyes to the sky, to the big screens. There are

:29:01. > :29:06.four of them are of the court. -- above the court. Was there a touch

:29:07. > :29:08.on its way out? Or are the French hoping that it was just inside or on

:29:09. > :29:37.the line? Tense moments these for the French

:29:38. > :29:42.team. They will have come into this expecting to win. They haven't lost

:29:43. > :29:47.against Italy for four years. 2012. They won the last five matches

:29:48. > :29:52.straight. If they lose this set they could be in real trouble. It will

:29:53. > :29:58.take a monumental effort to come back and win the final three sets.

:29:59. > :30:08.The challenge has been upheld. No. Well, the French thought that they

:30:09. > :30:12.had won it. They can't believe it. But the referee has spoken, the

:30:13. > :30:17.judges, the Hawk-Eye judges have made their decision and Italy take

:30:18. > :30:29.the point. And France have only got one more challenge left.

:30:30. > :30:41.The Italian blockers have been outstanding today. But Rouzier has

:30:42. > :30:55.the last laugh today. It is a point at last. Reverse set from Toniutti,

:30:56. > :31:05.and Rouzier let fly. Tier-mac they can't believe that.

:31:06. > :31:36.But France have the point. From the back! Lanza comes through. We had

:31:37. > :31:40.the dummy, the decoy... The slide, and France are struggling again.

:31:41. > :31:48.Four points in arrears. A rare moment of triumph. It was a grimace

:31:49. > :32:02.rather than a smile, there is so much work to be done for France.

:32:03. > :32:07.Just one block to beat, and he did it can N'Gapeth find his mark? From

:32:08. > :32:28.the backcourt, N'Gapeth now. France misfiring just like N'Gapeth,

:32:29. > :33:04.their star player. One of the big servers on the tour,

:33:05. > :33:10.Le Roux. One of the big hits hitters, Zaytsev, he claims they

:33:11. > :33:14.touch. And there is a challenge from Italy. Zaytsev absolutely convinced

:33:15. > :33:25.there was a touch off a French blocker. So, it could be 13-9, or

:33:26. > :33:32.stay at 12-10. Here is the incident. Surely, there was a touch of Le

:33:33. > :33:49.Goff, the left hand. No wonder Zaytsev was so convinced.

:33:50. > :34:00.The officials and the referee agreed. The school has changed, and

:34:01. > :34:11.Italy have these serve and a 4-point lead. Mighty block again! Everything

:34:12. > :34:20.is working, everything seems to be coming off. The French have been

:34:21. > :34:25.counted at every turn, every block. The now moment, as some people call

:34:26. > :34:30.it, reaching out over the net, and the ball isn't going to get through.

:34:31. > :35:07.Time-out called by France, not surprisingly.

:35:08. > :35:17.This brulee is one of the toughest. We have Brazil, USA, Italy, France,

:35:18. > :35:21.and Mexico are probably going to be the whipping boys but only four of

:35:22. > :35:25.the six go through to the quarterfinals, and if France were to

:35:26. > :35:28.do is this, they'd be up against it against USA, Brazil, Canada. They

:35:29. > :35:35.would have to win those remaining games. This is absolutely vital for

:35:36. > :35:43.France to come back. They have designs on some Olympic glory, the

:35:44. > :35:52.first medal if they were to do that. They need to strike now. Can they

:35:53. > :35:55.make the build-up play pay? Rouzier crosscourt, but it is out. And the

:35:56. > :36:17.gap only grows bigger. Juantorena, playing the game of his

:36:18. > :36:28.life at the moment. Wonderful disguise to serve there.

:36:29. > :36:44.Lanza, down the line! Well might Tillie scratch his head. Rouzier

:36:45. > :36:49.can't believe what he's seeing. I don't think the Italian coach can as

:36:50. > :36:54.well. Everything is going to plan. Rouzier, off the block. It is a rare

:36:55. > :37:04.point. Tillie deciding he's going to change

:37:05. > :37:28.it around. Pujol coming on. Pujol, Buckfastleigh experienced,

:37:29. > :37:34.and he will serve. -- vastly experienced. Lanza goes down the

:37:35. > :37:40.line, was it a touch? Italy claim, France dispute. And there is a

:37:41. > :38:01.challenge, there is the tell-tale buzzer.

:38:02. > :38:20.Was there a touch of the right-hand or did it go straight past? If it

:38:21. > :38:31.was out, then France will take the point, and the school will be 16-11.

:38:32. > :38:33.-- the score will be 16-11. France have to believe, they have to find

:38:34. > :38:50.something somewhere. It doesn't look good for France. And

:38:51. > :39:02.now it does. The body language seemed to suggest it wasn't good but

:39:03. > :39:11.it is 16-11. Oh! Left-handed! That would have caught the Italian

:39:12. > :39:19.defence out, it adds a new dimensional, opens out a new angle.

:39:20. > :40:01.And Italy call a time-out. France mixing it up in terms of

:40:02. > :40:07.throwing on different players. Italy, business as usual. Their

:40:08. > :40:21.starting players have done the job beautifully. Zaytsev, so strong.

:40:22. > :40:33.Beautifully finished by Birarrelli. France grateful to get the ball bank

:40:34. > :40:34.and in play and get another chance, but Birarrelli finished it

:40:35. > :40:50.mercilessly, and he will serve. Their luck isn't changing. Italy and

:40:51. > :41:08.Zaytsev are marching confidently towards a second set.

:41:09. > :41:19.Instructions being passed. Lovely touch but it was a net shortly. And

:41:20. > :41:30.Italy have the point. 19-12. Any French supporters just tuning in and

:41:31. > :41:33.watching would be utterly amazed to watch this. And they see the first

:41:34. > :41:47.set. Extraordinary turnaround. The coach's son, Tillie, to serve.

:41:48. > :42:22.Piano! It just gets better. Zaytsev, 20-13 ahead. That was a

:42:23. > :42:26.rare error. But whereas in the past often the French would have come

:42:27. > :42:28.back with half a chance, the Italian morale is so strong, they believe,

:42:29. > :42:49.and they are leading. That was off the block from Zaytsev.

:42:50. > :42:55.His introduction has worked for France, wonderful rescue, for a tall

:42:56. > :43:01.man tumbling down, able to keep the ball off the floor and then

:43:02. > :43:14.finishing, that was Rossaro. From the backcourt, Juantorena.

:43:15. > :43:30.Four points away from taking a 2-0 sets lead.

:43:31. > :43:48.Zaytsev, backcourt! What a spike! Ditty land awkwardly? One of the

:43:49. > :43:56.perils of being a volleyball player. The force when they land can cause

:43:57. > :44:01.problems for the ankle. And their knees. Plenty of them have had

:44:02. > :44:04.surgery and back problems, too. Time-out called by Italy, not

:44:05. > :44:48.surprisingly. Just playing for time. He did land awkwardly, Zaytsev, on

:44:49. > :44:52.his left ankle. You suspect he'd have to be dragged off the court

:44:53. > :45:02.because this is a momentous match for Italy. Just practising, and

:45:03. > :45:07.getting back into the rhythm. 11 out of 19 spikes. His ankle has

:45:08. > :45:09.restored. It will take him through. Three more points to close out this

:45:10. > :45:44.second set. Rouzier on for Bujold. France at the

:45:45. > :45:55.net. That is a frustrating for Sturrock. Italy are just two points

:45:56. > :46:08.away from two sets to love lead. The captain comes on. What magic can he

:46:09. > :46:22.create? And it needs to be. Antonov rejoins. That is out. That is

:46:23. > :46:27.exactly what happened on his serve when it came on before so his two

:46:28. > :46:34.introductions have not paid off. But still, six points Italy have over

:46:35. > :46:46.France, just needing two more to win this set. Here comes Juantorena

:46:47. > :46:51.again. That is good enough. Off the block and Italy against all the odds

:46:52. > :47:04.have set point, and what a margin they have as well. 24-17.

:47:05. > :47:20.Giannelli. Tillie unleashes, but is he only delaying the inevitable.

:47:21. > :47:40.He's still have another six points to make up. Liu Rui. That is off the

:47:41. > :47:49.block. That is wide. The Juantorena. They had the chance. Looking to

:47:50. > :47:58.maximise the court, just use the full width, find a corner. Le Roux

:47:59. > :48:07.again, leading all of his skill to keep France in this set. Zaytsev

:48:08. > :48:28.goes long. Another set point goes begging. France creep closer.

:48:29. > :48:57.Italy call a time-out to stem the tide.

:48:58. > :49:04.This next serve has to be good, and if they win the point, the next

:49:05. > :49:07.serve after that and the one after that and the one after that they

:49:08. > :49:16.have to be absolutely perfect to keep France in this set and not fall

:49:17. > :49:25.two sets down. Le Roux once more. Zaytsev goes for the tip. That is

:49:26. > :49:42.the second set. France are stunned. Italy are flying. 25-20, 25-20. ORE:

:49:43. > :49:46.well, the match could not be going any better for Italy right now. They

:49:47. > :49:52.lead by two sets to nail and both have been won by 25-20 and France

:49:53. > :49:57.have it all to do if they are to stay in this match. We will return

:49:58. > :50:01.to that stadium shortly but first we will check in on how they are

:50:02. > :50:05.getting on on BBC One at the moment. Right now they are featuring the

:50:06. > :50:08.women's rugby sevens. New Zealand other favourites for many and it is

:50:09. > :50:15.definitely between them and Australia in that competition they

:50:16. > :50:19.are taking on France to make it three out of three in group B and

:50:20. > :50:21.next on BBC One we will see the women's road race with Lizzie

:50:22. > :50:25.Armitstead going for Great Britain. Can she possibly earn Great

:50:26. > :50:33.Britain's first medal of the Olympics Rio 2016? On BBC Four we

:50:34. > :50:38.have some serious business to deal with because we have got... Mark, it

:50:39. > :50:46.is your moment, what are they doing? I'm sorry. Tell everyone exactly

:50:47. > :50:50.what you are doing here and why. This is my eighth Olympic Games I

:50:51. > :50:54.have been for and I have no ticket Monaghan border my friend in Germany

:50:55. > :51:04.is waiting for me. Since I have been here I have had no tickets so I am

:51:05. > :51:11.looking for tickets. I can't do anything but if you want to get a

:51:12. > :51:15.call-out to the UK. I need a ticket really badly but you made a much

:51:16. > :51:20.better Olympics than they do over here but if you can wire me one that

:51:21. > :51:25.would be good iPhone is right here and you can worry ticket to me. It

:51:26. > :51:29.is ten minutes into the game and we will do fine. You are saying all the

:51:30. > :51:33.right things. We will do anything we can to get marked into the handball

:51:34. > :51:39.arena. Give us your flag a minute while I link you into the stadium.

:51:40. > :51:43.He is a proud America and has come all the way from California. The

:51:44. > :51:48.weather is not too bad. Not too bad for the winter! While Mark tries to

:51:49. > :51:57.get a ticket for the handball we will go back to the volleyball with

:51:58. > :52:10.Italy leading 2-0 against France. Italy are leading 9-7. Take us

:52:11. > :52:13.through set three. He's gone! N'Gapeth takes the point for France.

:52:14. > :52:34.They are staying in touch, and they need to.

:52:35. > :52:42.A great recovery completed by telly. Finished. France are happy to get

:52:43. > :53:05.the ball over the net and that has set up the kill for Italy. 10-8.

:53:06. > :53:24.France will take that. Of the block from Kevin Tillie. Set by N'Gapeth

:53:25. > :53:34.and off the left hand of Giannelli. Beautifully worked. Receive, set,

:53:35. > :53:42.Spike. Perfect lead to his path and almost swatted away by Giannelli,

:53:43. > :54:00.block or no block. Giannelli now serves.

:54:01. > :54:15.Rossard can't benefit. Italy once again open up an advantage. 12-9.

:54:16. > :54:24.Giannelli continues, good spell of play, putting the points together.

:54:25. > :54:28.N'Gapeth opposite. You don't need to look at the scoreboard, just look at

:54:29. > :54:51.his reaction. It's another point gone begging.

:54:52. > :55:03.The French have blocked out N'Gapeth every time. Lanza takes the point.

:55:04. > :55:07.There is a time-out called by France. They need a breather. They

:55:08. > :55:41.were leading and now they are trailing again.

:55:42. > :55:52.The team can't quite believe what is happening around them.

:55:53. > :55:59.It is as if Christmas has arrived on Midsummer 's day, this was not meant

:56:00. > :56:04.to happen, this was nowhere near in the script. Italy might take a set,

:56:05. > :56:29.but not two, and not be leading in the third set by 14-9.

:56:30. > :56:31.Zaytsev! Involved, but that was Juantorena who finally finished it

:56:32. > :56:45.off. 15-10. The team at -- the team captains are

:56:46. > :57:06.being spoken to by the referee. Juantorena, the full force of the

:57:07. > :57:09.serve. N'Gapeth, but again blocked. The three Italian walkers are just

:57:10. > :57:23.like a wall there, they have read him all the time. -- the three

:57:24. > :57:30.Italian blockers. Barely 25% strike rate for N'Gapeth in this set and in

:57:31. > :57:39.this match overall. 16-11. France are going down to an astonishing

:57:40. > :57:49.defeat. Italy have been unstoppable right from the first serve. They won

:57:50. > :57:55.that and they never looked back. Off the block, or is that too far?

:57:56. > :57:56.Rossard. It is not off the block, it has gone too far beyond the

:57:57. > :58:20.baseline. France are sinking. Float from Birarelli. On any other

:58:21. > :58:24.day he would surely have landed that and France would have a score but

:58:25. > :58:29.today there is a blue wall that is absolutely impenetrable, even just

:58:30. > :58:55.one man and the Piano left hand has just held firm.

:58:56. > :59:03.The tension, the frustration, the anger growing. Two time-outs in

:59:04. > :59:07.very, very quick succession. That is unusual, but it also is a measure of

:59:08. > :59:10.the discomfort and distress that France are feeling. They cannot

:59:11. > :59:15.believe this. Italy are maximising it. There is the look of a

:59:16. > :59:39.bewildered man, lost. Zaytsev! It's another unstoppable

:59:40. > :59:41.Spike. Crosscourt, away from the block, N'Gapeth away from his feet,

:59:42. > :59:59.no chance. Rossard takes, and France will claim

:00:00. > :00:22.N'Gapeth to serve. On any other day, Zaytsev would not have found that

:00:23. > :00:23.funny
