:00:00. > :00:24.N'Gapeth to serve. On any other day, Zaytsev would not have found that

:00:25. > :00:26.funny but he has still got six points to play with, he and his

:00:27. > :01:06.team. Where is this man is loving every

:01:07. > :01:14.second. Vicious serve. And finished! Giannelli straight into play and

:01:15. > :01:18.finished it, didn't need a set. Grebennikov did it for him. And

:01:19. > :01:20.Italy are on my way. Four more points for a complete rout of the

:01:21. > :01:29.European champions. Even the spike... Well, it dropped

:01:30. > :01:49.out of court. Can France pull something miraculous

:01:50. > :01:57.out of this? Foot fault called by the second

:01:58. > :02:15.official. This game is sliding, sliding away,

:02:16. > :02:17.slipping through their grasp. France are three points away from a three

:02:18. > :02:44.set drubbing. Lanza served. How France could do with powerful

:02:45. > :02:53.serves. Beautiful finished, Piano, the beautiful blocker in Centre

:02:54. > :02:58.Court. Antonov comes on to serve. Can he do better than his two

:02:59. > :03:14.previous attempts that have gone out? Two points away from victory.

:03:15. > :03:26.Tillie blocked, and it has worked for Italy! Tillie thought he was

:03:27. > :03:28.through, that part worked but the block was perfect by the Italian

:03:29. > :03:44.captain, and it is match point. France are staring into the abyss.

:03:45. > :03:57.Italy are about to rejoice. Is it in a a ace? The French cannot believe

:03:58. > :04:05.it, they've been utterly overwhelmed. Less than a month ago,

:04:06. > :04:10.triumphant, they beat Italy 3-0, they spanked them. But here the boot

:04:11. > :04:14.has been on the other foot and Italy have been absolutely supreme from

:04:15. > :04:23.the moment they took a 9-0 lead in the first set they have not stepped

:04:24. > :04:36.off the accelerator. And France have been soundly, soundly beaten.

:04:37. > :04:44.you can see exactly what it means for them to get off to a fantastic

:04:45. > :04:49.start. The 3-0 win over France. France have work to do if they are

:04:50. > :04:54.to reach up to their standard. Italy get off with a fantastic win. Now,

:04:55. > :05:01.let's bring you up to date a little bit with the fencing because earlier

:05:02. > :05:09.we saw Great Britain's James Andrew Davies in the men's foil, and he got

:05:10. > :05:14.off to a good start, he moves on to the next part of the competition.

:05:15. > :05:21.So, fantastic start to proceedings for James Andrew Davies. And we've

:05:22. > :05:23.got more fencing for you actually. Here is what is coming up in the

:05:24. > :05:39.rest of the programme. We've got more men's foil for you.

:05:40. > :05:57.Laurence Halsted representing GB, he will be representing in the fencing.

:05:58. > :06:01.And we will see the judo. We're hoping to bring you some canoe

:06:02. > :06:05.slalom because David Florence is the men's world number one in the C1.

:06:06. > :06:13.However, because of the wind, we've talked to about the weather in Rio,

:06:14. > :06:19.things have been postponed just for a minute. And we will be going down

:06:20. > :06:24.to Diadora to see the eventing. William Fox-Pitt doing well. Pippa

:06:25. > :06:32.Funnell is in the eventing and we will see her in the dressage. Down

:06:33. > :06:39.here on the Olympic Park, I'm glad to say that the American that we

:06:40. > :06:43.showed you, Mark, he got 's off into the handball Arena! That is the

:06:44. > :06:48.power of the BBC and the power of everyone of you at home. Now we will

:06:49. > :06:57.move on to fencing. It takes place the Carioca Arena. It takes place in

:06:58. > :07:03.the Carioca Arena number three. That is where it is taking place right

:07:04. > :07:07.now. We will feature Laurence Halsted, his parents were fences as

:07:08. > :07:11.well so there was always going to be a possibility he would represent

:07:12. > :07:21.Great Britain as well. Let's head on into Carioca Arena number three and

:07:22. > :07:33.join our commentators Graham Bell. It is a false start. The referee

:07:34. > :07:45.unhappy but they are now on God. -- en garde. Yes, he's absolutely

:07:46. > :07:49.electric when he is on form. He's finishing with a closing

:07:50. > :07:54.continuation of the attack. Gets on the front foot immediately, as

:07:55. > :08:03.you've seen, likes to disrupt. Laurence Halsted is pretty good

:08:04. > :08:11.defensive as well. He didn't quite get it on, happy to use the full

:08:12. > :08:15.length of the pizza he can complement his attacking style.

:08:16. > :08:25.Expect this one to go up and down, end to end stuff, a footballing

:08:26. > :08:31.analogy. Chen takes the lead. It is the first to 15. Three minute bouts

:08:32. > :08:36.with a one-minute rest in between the periods. This one, I suspect,

:08:37. > :08:42.might not go the distance of the carry on at this pace. Yes, it is

:08:43. > :08:46.frenetic and at the moment, it is Chen who has started the better,

:08:47. > :08:55.getting a couple of close distance hits. The referee will look at the

:08:56. > :08:59.video. He has given nothing there, unable to separate. Sometimes at

:09:00. > :09:08.close quarters it is difficult to see even on the replay. Chen gets

:09:09. > :09:11.another one. If you're new to fencing, if just the one coloured

:09:12. > :09:18.light comes on, there's a good chance that is an infringement. If

:09:19. > :09:23.there are two coloured lights coming on, then both fences are hit on

:09:24. > :09:27.target. There is another single light on for Chen. If two lights

:09:28. > :09:33.come on, the referee has to decide whose turn it was to attack. Who had

:09:34. > :09:39.the right of way. If a non-coloured light comes on, and off target like,

:09:40. > :09:47.that is a hit off target, and you may just, if it is your time, it'll

:09:48. > :09:51.reset the point where they left off. But Chen is absolutely flying away

:09:52. > :09:58.with this one. Halsted, what can he do to get back? Nothing is working

:09:59. > :10:05.against the left-hander. He is able to close out the line. He will have

:10:06. > :10:15.to change the line of the riposte. It is a great start from Chen

:10:16. > :10:19.Haiwei. And Halsted goes out on the attack, and as you put it, he had

:10:20. > :10:23.the attack but gets an off target light so no-hit scored and they will

:10:24. > :10:31.reset from where they scored the off target hit.

:10:32. > :10:42.Another one for Chen. It takes him to 7-0. Going around that line on

:10:43. > :10:48.the outside, it isn't working for Halsted. And Chen has got this one

:10:49. > :10:52.sorted out at the moment. Halsted has to change lines, Chen doing a

:10:53. > :10:54.great job and a super attack from the British fencer. That'll settle

:10:55. > :11:27.his nerves. Is that hit going to be awarded? I

:11:28. > :11:33.think Halsted is changing his weapon as we see this replay. And he has

:11:34. > :11:43.indeed asked to change his weapon. He needs to surrender the other one

:11:44. > :11:48.to the referee. Chen tightening his weapon. It looks like no-hit has

:11:49. > :12:00.been given. It is possible to make up a big

:12:01. > :12:03.difference in foil if you can work out your opponent. And Halsted needs

:12:04. > :12:12.to do that and he needs to get some points on the board. He does. We see

:12:13. > :12:23.the technician coming out. The official timekeeper adding more

:12:24. > :12:31.equipment to make this wireless system work.

:12:32. > :12:40.So, a bit of magic dust sprinkled onto the equipment and everything is

:12:41. > :12:48.working again. And it is Chen who is dominating this round of 32 against

:12:49. > :12:59.Laurence Halsted of Great Britain. That will be given as off target.

:13:00. > :13:04.And, finally, the riposte works for the Brit. Halsted is five points

:13:05. > :13:10.down but if he can get into it, that could be another one... Yes, it is.

:13:11. > :13:15.He's just found the distance now. Look out for Halsted because when he

:13:16. > :13:20.gets on a roll, he can be tricky to stop. But Chen was ready for that.

:13:21. > :13:24.He opened up the distance, very clever. You have to adapt to your

:13:25. > :13:33.tactics all the time and respond to how your opponent is working you

:13:34. > :13:44.out. Another point Halsted. He has closed it to four. 15 is the target.

:13:45. > :13:53.I think this one isn't going to go the full distance. I'd wager we

:13:54. > :14:03.should get to the break but Chen is looking very strong. The referee

:14:04. > :14:11.gives it to Chen as well. Just got the measure of the Brit at the

:14:12. > :14:15.moment. Chen is so deep in that en garde position. Yes, and very

:14:16. > :14:19.effective. As the attack is parried come he's closing not only the line

:14:20. > :14:24.but his closing out the opportunity to hit by ducking his target down

:14:25. > :14:27.and keeping his point on Halsted's target, this is how he is landing a

:14:28. > :15:01.lot of those continuations. Another one for Halsted. He has his

:15:02. > :15:07.work cut out, though. Chen isn't in top gear just yet and he is winning

:15:08. > :15:18.the tactical battle. It is my way or the highway! Laurence Halsted could

:15:19. > :15:22.be turning it around. He missed out on the attack, Chen missed on the

:15:23. > :15:31.counter and it was a continuation for Halsted. He is within three.

:15:32. > :15:38.Halsted thinks it is his. And it is! Just two points in it. Halsted

:15:39. > :15:42.clawing his way back into the match. I think Chen has called for a video

:15:43. > :15:47.replay. The referee says it was a carbon copy of the last it. The

:15:48. > :15:53.attack misses from Halsted and Chen misses on the counterattack, said

:15:54. > :15:54.the referee will stick with his decision. Chen missed behind the

:15:55. > :16:15.back of Halsted. Now that things have got tighter

:16:16. > :16:18.Chen just seems to be breaking the fight up a bit. He doesn't want to

:16:19. > :16:28.get this Halstead juggernaut rolling. A nice riposte though. The

:16:29. > :16:32.referee will question whether the riposte came while Chen was on the

:16:33. > :16:42.piste, I think it did. This was a perfectly valid hit. They were so

:16:43. > :16:46.close together Chen had to lift his arm up almost behind his head in

:16:47. > :16:56.order to allow the distance of his foil to hit on target.

:16:57. > :17:09.That is so fast from chairman there. -- Chen there. Less than a minute to

:17:10. > :17:15.go until the first break and Chen has accelerated away. A mini revival

:17:16. > :17:25.there from Halstead but Chen has just stepped on the gas. The defence

:17:26. > :17:28.here from Chen is absolutely solid, his lowering Halstead into finishing

:17:29. > :17:32.an attack on picking off Walley still trying to recover from the

:17:33. > :17:38.lunch. A nice reply there from Halstead, but he cannot afford any

:17:39. > :17:44.mistakes at all. You have to say that Chen has one foot into the

:17:45. > :17:53.round of 16 here. I think he has the whole leg. We are going up to 15. 50

:17:54. > :18:04.seconds left on this first period. Chen will want to see this out.

:18:05. > :18:07.There it is. Chen Haiwei of China defeat Laurence Halsted of Great

:18:08. > :18:16.Britain. He will move through to the next round. A great performance from

:18:17. > :18:21.the Chinese Spencer. He kind of had it pretty easy, but he won the

:18:22. > :18:25.tactical battle early on and he got out to a massive lead and Halstead

:18:26. > :18:41.fought his way into the fight but it was all too little too late.

:18:42. > :18:50.Chen Haiwei actually only did three minutes of fencing work there so

:18:51. > :18:54.that will help when it comes down to progress further on in this

:18:55. > :19:03.competition because it is a long day for all of those fences out there,

:19:04. > :19:06.the ones who stay in. It is kind of like in tennis going through five

:19:07. > :19:10.set matches before you get to the final, you don't really want that.

:19:11. > :19:16.It is quite right that the fight being finished in three minutes was

:19:17. > :19:21.absolutely superb for Chen and he will go into his next fight a lot

:19:22. > :19:30.more refreshed. That was the final hit from Chen, over the shoulder of

:19:31. > :19:33.Halstead. Yes, that is actually Halstead tried reflector chest. We

:19:34. > :19:37.finally change the line of that flick, where he had been going to

:19:38. > :19:40.shoulder on the outside of the left-hand arm before and failing, he

:19:41. > :19:49.tried to flick on to the chest and just missed.

:19:50. > :19:56.There it is, confirmation of the score all done and dusted in the

:19:57. > :20:03.first period. Chen Haiwei of China defeat Laurence Halsted of Great

:20:04. > :20:07.Britain. ORE: commiserations to Laurence Halsted that there, losing

:20:08. > :20:12.out in the men's individual foil. It is actually the only event that

:20:13. > :20:16.Great Britain have representation in but we do have James Andrew Davies

:20:17. > :20:20.who did well to progress in the competition earlier this afternoon.

:20:21. > :20:24.Here on BBC Four we were planning to show you some of the canoe slalom

:20:25. > :20:30.down at the Rio radical Park but the weather seems to have intervened. We

:20:31. > :20:35.have Matthew Pinsent standing down there and we can feel the weather

:20:36. > :20:41.here, tell us how it feels down there in Deodoro. Yes, at the

:20:42. > :20:45.Deodoro slalom canoe course here we are on the hill above the Deodoro

:20:46. > :20:49.and we are getting the brunt of this breeze, wind, perhaps even Gail at

:20:50. > :20:52.times, and you can see from the camera angles around the course, the

:20:53. > :20:57.flags fluttering and it is affecting all sorts of things off the water.

:20:58. > :21:00.If I show you behind me you can see the flags on the hill there are

:21:01. > :21:02.fluttering quite strongly and the crucial thing for the competition,

:21:03. > :21:17.if you can see down lower, you are looking for Bill read on

:21:18. > :21:19.white polls and the green and white poles and they are the gate marking

:21:20. > :21:21.polls and it makes it particularly difficult with them blowing around

:21:22. > :21:24.as they are, firstly for the competitors to get through them and

:21:25. > :21:26.secondly, crucially, for the judges to tell if they have brushed the

:21:27. > :21:29.gate or not because in canoe slalom even if you touch the gate in the

:21:30. > :21:33.slightest weight two second penalty so at the moment there is a one-hour

:21:34. > :21:37.delay and we were expecting to see them at 4:30pm UK time but that has

:21:38. > :21:44.now moved to 5:30pm at the earliest before we see any canoe slalom here

:21:45. > :21:48.in Rio. By the looks of things at the moment it looks impossible to

:21:49. > :21:51.negotiate those gates right there and Great Britain have two

:21:52. > :21:57.individual canoe slalom lists going this afternoon and they were

:21:58. > :22:00.scheduled to be Joe Clarke and David Florence, both have very different

:22:01. > :22:07.parts of their Olympic career. Will they had to contend with this? Yes,

:22:08. > :22:12.the early stages of the canoe slalom you have two chances to go down the

:22:13. > :22:18.course and basically the top 15 or 16 paddlers, depending on whether

:22:19. > :22:21.you are K-1 or C one get through to the semifinals. We comfortably

:22:22. > :22:26.expect that the both Joe and David they would do that, so whilst it is

:22:27. > :22:33.a pain for everyone they have to be patient and see if they will go

:22:34. > :22:36.today. We have seen a full day delay -- a full day delay in the rowing

:22:37. > :22:41.sofa the athletes here it is a rating game -- waiting game and they

:22:42. > :22:44.have to stay patient because we expect them to do great things in

:22:45. > :22:48.this competition and we hope this will be a temporary blip in the

:22:49. > :22:53.road. Take us to your competition days, if you will. Likes of David

:22:54. > :22:57.and Joe are going to have to stand by and wait and compose themselves.

:22:58. > :23:01.When you were out there doing the rowing, how did you compose

:23:02. > :23:04.yourself? Did you take yourself away or keep yourself in the zone? How

:23:05. > :23:09.did you manage to focus and deliver the best performance? It is a very

:23:10. > :23:12.good question and it really depends how long the delay is. The real

:23:13. > :23:17.difficulty is when they say there is a one-hour delay and then they push

:23:18. > :23:20.it 30 minutes or another two hours and what you really want is

:23:21. > :23:24.something clinical to happen, as has happened at the rowing this morning

:23:25. > :23:28.when they say they will draw a line under the day and come back tomorrow

:23:29. > :23:31.but what is really difficulties if you are about to compete and they

:23:32. > :23:35.tell you to wait for 60 minutes and you have to think about mindset and

:23:36. > :23:39.also about hydration and nutrition, what have you eaten and how much

:23:40. > :23:44.will you drink and how will you stay at the peak of your powers to stay

:23:45. > :23:47.taking on your Olympic tom petition and everybody is nervous when you

:23:48. > :23:51.get to an Olympics and you are very keen to get on with it but if it is

:23:52. > :23:56.like this and windy and inconsistent it is a nightmare for the

:23:57. > :24:01.competitors. It is a level playing field, they will all have to contend

:24:02. > :24:05.with it and the medals made the -- the medals may be decided on who can

:24:06. > :24:09.deal with the competition -- complication best. We'll come back

:24:10. > :24:12.to you later on so stay good and stay dry and try not to get blown

:24:13. > :24:21.away and we will catch up with you later. In the meantime we will take

:24:22. > :24:24.you to the judo match -- judo mat and the competition taking place in

:24:25. > :24:29.Carioca number two, that is the middle one here in the Olympic Park

:24:30. > :24:35.and after the disappointment of Ashley McKenzie going out yesterday

:24:36. > :24:38.in the last 32 in the men's 60 kilo category, that was a real

:24:39. > :24:42.disappointment for him. He lost against the reigning champion and it

:24:43. > :24:45.was an emotional defeat for him. Tears were shed and he really didn't

:24:46. > :24:49.want to speak to any of the media after his defeat yesterday but he

:24:50. > :24:53.eventually composed himself and chatted to us on the BBC but after

:24:54. > :25:00.that disappointment there in the 60 kilo category, it now is the term of

:25:01. > :25:05.Colin Oates in the 66 kilograms category. He is also a Commonwealth

:25:06. > :25:12.champion and scored a career-best European silver earlier in the year

:25:13. > :25:19.so it is now time for Colin Oates to take to the match at -- mat and he

:25:20. > :25:21.is up against a Frenchman and we can join this one with our commentator

:25:22. > :25:48.Ollie Williams. Colin Oates in the blue making his

:25:49. > :25:56.first appearance here at the Olympic Games. He is up against Le Blouch

:25:57. > :26:03.for France. It took five minutes in golden score for adults to prevail

:26:04. > :26:12.the last time they met. Just like last November there is a tentative

:26:13. > :26:18.early exchange and already a penalty against Le Blouch. That will be a

:26:19. > :26:24.little early benefit for Colin Oates. When you come out here at

:26:25. > :26:31.first there is a fantastic atmosphere and he is just wrapping

:26:32. > :26:39.around. He says this is probably his last chance in the Olympics. He was

:26:40. > :26:40.in the quarterfinals in London 2012. These are relatively evenly matched

:26:41. > :26:57.opponents in this opening round. Le Blouch trying to ten Oates there.

:26:58. > :26:59.It is good to get the grip in these opening exchanges and fill each

:27:00. > :27:03.other out and try to get the grip and the momentum and the hold that

:27:04. > :27:07.will enable you to turn your opponent and get them on their back.

:27:08. > :27:21.Yet the ippon that will enter this competition. Oates trying to bring

:27:22. > :27:26.the lake in between the legs of Le Blouch. He is looking to pin him

:27:27. > :27:30.down and get him in a hold on the floor. If you can get your opponent

:27:31. > :27:35.on the back and hold them, that is what will get the win. Le Blouch are

:27:36. > :27:47.struggling a bit and Oates is trying to get the purchasing needs and get

:27:48. > :27:51.the lock. This will last five minutes and then goes to golden

:27:52. > :27:56.score if the score is level at that point but the penalty will count

:27:57. > :28:02.against Le Blouch so if the score stays as it is now Oates go through.

:28:03. > :28:09.This is technically the second round of this competition at Rio 2016.

:28:10. > :28:15.Oates didn't fight in the first round, only four fighters did.

:28:16. > :28:24.Nobody has really established to much of a sway in this competition

:28:25. > :28:27.yet. It is looking for the explosive manoeuvres which is what you need to

:28:28. > :28:30.do but he isn't getting the purchasing needs. It is exactly the

:28:31. > :28:36.same as November last year when these two last fought and Oates have

:28:37. > :28:41.the attacking advantage but couldn't convert it into the move he needed

:28:42. > :28:46.to win it. It was ten or 12 minutes in the end, it was an extremely long

:28:47. > :28:54.and drawn-out contest. We could see that again today.

:28:55. > :29:22.He dodges that. We are more than halfway through normal time.

:29:23. > :29:28.Le Blouch is just a little bit shorter than Oates which is a factor

:29:29. > :29:40.in terms of height and reach and how close you want your opponent to be.

:29:41. > :29:45.Now, a penalty there against each of our two athletes for passive itty,

:29:46. > :29:49.noncombative T. When you see that motion by the referee, it is to

:29:50. > :29:54.suggest that essentially both of them should be a little bit more

:29:55. > :29:58.aggressive, they are standing off too much. Certainly you will see Le

:29:59. > :30:03.Blouch try and pick this up now because time is going to run out for

:30:04. > :30:07.him. He is down by two penalties to one and Oates will be very happy

:30:08. > :30:09.with this. Le Blouch will increasingly, you'll see, come at

:30:10. > :30:29.Oates now. Less than a minute remaining. Oates

:30:30. > :30:34.matching Le Blouch. That was a sacrifice technique, dropping to the

:30:35. > :30:46.floor first in an attempt to get Le Blouch on the floor but he couldn't

:30:47. > :30:52.get the purchase. Trying to get over the top now. He can probably use

:30:53. > :31:02.this to his advantage. I don't know if that is going to go up. Le Blouch

:31:03. > :31:12.appealing to the referee. Riding around on the floor. The clock is

:31:13. > :31:13.ticking down. 20 seconds. Once again, going for the throw and

:31:14. > :31:30.nothing came of it. Now, that has levelled the scores.

:31:31. > :31:36.The penalty for non-combat itty against Oates, and we have eight

:31:37. > :31:42.seconds for someone to do something, otherwise we go to Golden score.

:31:43. > :31:51.Unlikely to see anything here. You can see the look and Oates's face as

:31:52. > :31:58.the gong goes. We will go to golden score, as we did the last time that

:31:59. > :32:06.these two met each other. Colin Oates hasn't lost Kilian Le Blouch

:32:07. > :32:12.in his career. But, then, they've only met each other twice in the

:32:13. > :32:20.last six or seven years. It isn't that often on the international

:32:21. > :32:26.circuit. Golden score means any penalty, any school, anything,

:32:27. > :32:50.waza-ari, ippon will win. Oates turned it into his advantage.

:32:51. > :32:56.He couldn't do anything you with it. There's no time limit with golden

:32:57. > :33:02.score so this will go until somebody registers something. Again, same

:33:03. > :33:09.manoeuvre, trying to make it work. Oates seems to be wise for it. The

:33:10. > :33:13.leg inside the thigh trying to give him purchase, the idea meaning you

:33:14. > :33:19.can bring your opponent over the top. These two are cancelling each

:33:20. > :33:26.other out almost entirely. However, the penalty has been awarded against

:33:27. > :33:32.Colin Oates who, you can see, is livid with that but there's nothing

:33:33. > :33:36.he can do. It is down to the official to award penalties. By

:33:37. > :33:40.virtue of that, Kilian Le Blouch goes through. It was the exact

:33:41. > :33:45.opposite the last time they met after an incredibly attritional

:33:46. > :33:50.fight, a Oates was given the penalty and went through. Here, by virtue of

:33:51. > :33:56.penalties with no one really registering any score, Kilian Le

:33:57. > :34:08.Blouch goes through. And Colin Oates is out of Rio 2016.

:34:09. > :34:18.disappointment. As you can see and Colin's face, especially on golden

:34:19. > :34:23.score, real disappointment for verse Scott. A few people have been making

:34:24. > :34:28.their way out of Carioca Arena two, so maybe they were there, seeing the

:34:29. > :34:33.disappointment for the Scot. Kilian Le Blouch continues to fly the flag

:34:34. > :34:37.for France so he continues in the competition. It is quite breezy down

:34:38. > :34:43.here and, as we told you here earlier, the weather has played its

:34:44. > :34:47.part at postponing events with the roaming. We saw some boats capsized

:34:48. > :34:51.in yesterday's because of the weather. So for the safety of

:34:52. > :34:56.everyone, we aren't seeing any rowing right now. It's also

:34:57. > :35:02.affecting things up at Diadora. We wanted to show you the canoe slalom,

:35:03. > :35:06.but, as Matthew Pinsent told us earlier, play isn't going to get

:35:07. > :35:11.under way for at least another hour. We will keep you posted. However, we

:35:12. > :35:19.have action going on right around the ground so let's see what they

:35:20. > :35:26.are doing on BBC One. Rugby 7's, Great Britain against Canada. They

:35:27. > :35:31.opened against Brazil, they beat them. They played Japan last night,

:35:32. > :35:35.they beat them as well. A chance to beat Canada and qualify top out of

:35:36. > :35:39.group C. After that on BBC One, we're going to see the women's road

:35:40. > :35:47.race getting under way. Lizzie Armitstead of Great Britain is in

:35:48. > :35:51.here. They are under way right now. They will join at after Rugby 7's

:35:52. > :35:54.but if you want to watch that right now, you can see it over on the BBC

:35:55. > :36:02.Red Button, uninterrupted coverage right there. For us, though, we will

:36:03. > :36:07.concentrate on the beach volleyball. Yesterday, we showed you the

:36:08. > :36:12.stunning Copacabana stadium there. A custom-built arena. We saw the

:36:13. > :36:16.Brazilian pair open their campaign with a 2-0 win. Though the world

:36:17. > :36:21.number one pet and they are doing exactly the same in the women's

:36:22. > :36:27.event. The home nation are the number one seeds. What is she doing?

:36:28. > :36:35.You were not welcome! Let's see what the Brazilian women's pair did to

:36:36. > :36:42.open up their campaign. They got through the opening match unscathed

:36:43. > :36:47.against the Russian pair. They won that 2-0, just like their male

:36:48. > :36:50.team-mates did yesterday. The Brazilian number one pet enjoying

:36:51. > :36:57.the moment, enjoying the sunshine, as you'd expect they would do. They

:36:58. > :37:01.are really enjoying that. So, Brazil move on with a convincing win. We

:37:02. > :37:14.will join them down at Copacabana right now and see the USA take on

:37:15. > :37:20.the Polish pair. Our first set is going to be taken through by Clayton

:37:21. > :37:28.Lucas, our commentator. Let's join them in the first set. It is the

:37:29. > :37:31.first 21 points and set. Doesn't matter who serves, you have to win

:37:32. > :37:59.each set by two points. It is the USA in blues serving

:38:00. > :38:06.Poland in red receiving. First set. The first point goes the way of the

:38:07. > :38:08.USA, USA getting in a right because both players ended up try to stop

:38:09. > :38:27.the ball. Nice pick-up, that is another one

:38:28. > :38:30.false kindly for Poland and they would get the point as also a very

:38:31. > :38:52.good start for them. A touch of nerves for the USA, you feel.

:38:53. > :39:39.The net touch against Poland. If you touch the net, that is a fault.

:39:40. > :39:55.The lead has been handed straight back to the USA.

:39:56. > :40:01.There's an opportunity to a dig by Sweat, shouldn't make any adjustment

:40:02. > :40:27.of the crosscourt position. The teams change ends in multiples

:40:28. > :40:31.of seven in the opening two sets. That is because we look at the

:40:32. > :40:36.weather and we see it blowing up 35 miles an hour. It is warm but the

:40:37. > :40:41.wind is a factor. That affects the way you play the ball. If it is

:40:42. > :40:48.blowing into your face, you have to set the ball to the net. So the

:40:49. > :40:54.teams will change ends. They both get to experience potentially the

:40:55. > :41:02.good end and the bad end. And when the sun is out, that also affects

:41:03. > :41:08.the way the game is played. It is a bright, sunny day, depth perception

:41:09. > :41:17.goes right into your face it can be an issue. Scramble by Sweat.

:41:18. > :41:22.Excellent! The crowd enjoying that one but that was a shame because

:41:23. > :41:31.both teams working very hard and Brzostek just fluffed her lines.

:41:32. > :41:35.She couldn't get as far out of the sand as she would have liked to go

:41:36. > :41:49.over the net. It isn't going to come back. USA

:41:50. > :42:04.lead by two. There was a net touch as well by

:42:05. > :42:29.Poland. Great joust at the net. Superbly won

:42:30. > :42:35.by Kolosinska. The only time in the game the ball can be stopped,

:42:36. > :42:45.carried, as it were, as it is jousted. It is a good test of

:42:46. > :42:52.strength. She who pushes last wins. The chase is on! Brilliantly done by

:42:53. > :43:00.Sweat and Fendrick pops it back over. Better chance for the USA now,

:43:01. > :43:06.and they have taken it! Excellent work from Sweat and Fendrick. They

:43:07. > :43:12.were under pressure off the serve, and it was a very good chase. They

:43:13. > :43:15.gave it back and said, right, let's reset our defence. They made a dig

:43:16. > :43:38.and then got the ball to the line. It doesn't quite catch the sideline.

:43:39. > :43:42.The lines official says it is out. Sweat thinks about challenging but

:43:43. > :44:17.she changes her mind. Two challenges per set.

:44:18. > :45:05.Excellent from Fendrick, making good use of her height at the net. The

:45:06. > :45:09.USA are in front at the moment. Just comes in front, then turns it back

:45:10. > :45:22.to the line. No one there to stop that one.

:45:23. > :45:28.That's not going to come back. You can see just how much the ball is

:45:29. > :45:35.moving in the wind and how much the players have to move to try and

:45:36. > :45:41.control unit. Kolosinska unable to do that. She came up, she is very

:45:42. > :45:48.narrow and unable to contain the ball, that means the USA have the

:45:49. > :45:57.point. Two aces for them now. Some serious strapping on a Lauren

:45:58. > :46:01.Fendrick's thumbs. She was unable to make the third touch. The third time

:46:02. > :46:09.of asking Poland already had the ball.

:46:10. > :46:13.A nice touch and another decent touch. It is still Poland to have

:46:14. > :46:59.control of the ball. It is a net touch against Poland,

:47:00. > :47:00.continuing through and into the net. We have a technical time-out with

:47:01. > :48:26.the USA leading 12-9. These two teams have played each

:48:27. > :48:32.other previously on the world tour and on both occasions it is Poland

:48:33. > :48:39.who came out on top by 2-0. However the last time I played was back in

:48:40. > :48:54.2015 and it was Poland, in the grand slam. There haven't been any matches

:48:55. > :49:03.paid since then. Now it is the USA in the ascendancy.

:49:04. > :49:13.Good dig. Poland have to go again. It might be a blessing for Poland

:49:14. > :49:23.here. It might not be, and it isn't. Well watched by Brooke Sweat,

:49:24. > :49:27.playing that one over, just when Fendrick made the continuation block

:49:28. > :49:32.it was out of position and it kind of put them back into it and gave

:49:33. > :49:38.them an opportunity to have a swing but going with the pokey and they

:49:39. > :50:44.played the price for it. -- paid the price for it.

:50:45. > :50:52.Oh, she's going to get the ace as well. She took her time, da Vinci,

:50:53. > :50:58.with a pre-server team, but it paid off. Such a cruel grow -- blow when

:50:59. > :51:02.you are on the receiving side of a server like this. It could have just

:51:03. > :51:12.as easily have landed on the USA side. A big block as well to back-up

:51:13. > :51:18.the ace serve and the USA are very much in the driving seat. Poland's

:51:19. > :51:51.time-out not helping them. USA fans are delighted.

:51:52. > :52:01.The official is signalling that they touched. If it does touch the

:52:02. > :52:05.defender doesn't matter whether ball goes after that, if it doesn't come

:52:06. > :52:11.back over it is the attacking teams point. A bit too much on that one.

:52:12. > :52:16.That is the scenario you have when the wind is at your back like that,

:52:17. > :52:19.it favours the team with the wind into their faces on serve because

:52:20. > :52:24.you can go up and really had the ball hard and the wind will hold it

:52:25. > :52:28.up and move it around a bit but when the wind is at your back you have to

:52:29. > :52:58.take some heat off the ball. Otherwise it will go long.

:52:59. > :53:04.Sweat is getting onto just about everything, isn't she, at the

:53:05. > :53:12.moment. Making Poland were very hard for their point.

:53:13. > :53:45.Angle was the corn -- Orlandi outcome.

:53:46. > :53:57.The sun is beginning to make an appearance over Centre court. A bit

:53:58. > :54:01.intermittent with the clouds that are rolling around in the breeze.

:54:02. > :54:07.That is a good chase but it won't come back. Despite Poland 's best

:54:08. > :54:26.efforts at the moment it is the USA who are bossing this first set.

:54:27. > :54:32.Straight through the arms of Fendrick, must have caught as a goes

:54:33. > :54:36.through. It does against, she has to play it back over again. A net touch

:54:37. > :54:41.in the end against Fendrick and Poland to take the point. With the

:54:42. > :54:44.block accounting is a touch on the beach it does mean that the

:54:45. > :54:49.attacking side in these situations do still have the edge because as a

:54:50. > :54:53.defending team you are kind of scrambling to get the ball back into

:54:54. > :54:57.being a position to have an attack but fortunately for Fendrick she

:54:58. > :55:04.denied Poland the opportunity because she touched it.

:55:05. > :55:30.It was hit hard enough so that went in to Kolosinska's block.

:55:31. > :55:37.A good pick-up. Brilliant and hard hit as well from Fendrick and the

:55:38. > :56:48.USA take the opening set to 21-14. So, the tale of the first set. The

:56:49. > :56:55.USA had three blocks and made three more digs and three more aces to

:56:56. > :57:00.seal that one 21-14 as we get the second set underway. The USA are

:57:01. > :57:01.having to scramble. A free ball back here for Poland and the chance to

:57:02. > :57:30.get the first point on the board. Really good defence. Poland have got

:57:31. > :57:36.off to a flyer in this second set. It is a must win set for them. USA

:57:37. > :57:40.will be delighted with the way they have got this match off and running

:57:41. > :57:43.by taking that first set but now they need to consolidate that under

:57:44. > :57:55.the second. They would hate to get drawn into a third set decider. Nine

:57:56. > :57:56.over was the call and that is exactly the play that Kendrick came

:57:57. > :58:24.up with. -- line over. Kolosinska again the target for the

:58:25. > :58:28.USA and this time the joust was won by Fendrick but would you believe

:58:29. > :58:33.it, Brzostek just plays it straight back over and the USA stand and

:58:34. > :58:46.stare and let it stand. A wasted opportunity. A wasted opportunity by

:58:47. > :58:57.Fendrick and Brooke Sweat. A great super slow Mo of the joust. Good

:58:58. > :59:16.covering. Oh, clever, but it's not going to

:59:17. > :59:20.catch the baseline. Poland try to do a literary classic going over on one

:59:21. > :59:27.from the German beach volleyball player who was there at the Olympic

:59:28. > :59:34.Games but it doesn't quite pay off. It was the right idea, the USA both

:59:35. > :59:43.in at the net. It is the USA who take the point, just one behind now.

:59:44. > :59:48.Sweat is scurrying around the court superbly well. Difficult for Poland

:59:49. > :00:23.to find clean winners. Poland re-establishing their lead in

:00:24. > :00:32.the first and change. The wind is getting up.

:00:33. > :00:40.They are somewhat protected on this court. Poland to deny the USA and

:00:41. > :00:52.they are extending their lead. Fendrick was a little too close to

:00:53. > :01:10.the net and she couldn't get it. Oh, it's another one. Kolosinska

:01:11. > :01:16.again hopping up into the hitting zone to deny the USA, and the USA

:01:17. > :02:34.with no option now at 7-2 down, they call the time-out.

:02:35. > :02:43.Well, words fail me right now. Three blocks in a row for Poland. USA,

:02:44. > :02:50.having called that time-out, straight back in and denied again.

:02:51. > :03:04.This could be more trouble for the USA. She can't get it over the net!

:03:05. > :03:07.Well, where do the USA go from here? Seven points behind, they've used

:03:08. > :03:26.their time-out although there could be a technical time-out.

:03:27. > :03:40.More trouble for the USA. Four touches given against them. This is

:03:41. > :03:43.a bit of a collapse. They still need that one side out. The crosscourt

:03:44. > :04:08.angle wasn't executed properly. This is now a mental battle more

:04:09. > :04:14.than anything else for the USA. Backing themselves to get the side

:04:15. > :04:28.out. And they have. Relief for Fendrick. And for Sweat. 11-3 down.

:04:29. > :04:29.You fancy Poland to take this set. Stranger things have happened,

:04:30. > :04:52.though. Even better pick-up by Poland.

:04:53. > :05:21.Doesn't come back over. It is a point to the USA.

:05:22. > :05:34.Another chance for the States. The USA are just strangling. There are

:05:35. > :06:03.lots of opportunities for Poland to the ball down.

:06:04. > :06:11.Well, for the USA right now, 12-5 down, but with the cushion of one

:06:12. > :06:15.set in the bag, they probably know deep down this is going to go to a

:06:16. > :06:19.decider, but there is still time for them to get momentum and points on

:06:20. > :06:23.the board, to make things interesting and give Poland

:06:24. > :06:40.something to think about but they need to make those digs count.

:06:41. > :07:20.Brzostek to serve. Fendrick is the target.

:07:21. > :07:29.The scramble was unsuccessful. It is a fine line at times. You watch the

:07:30. > :07:34.players coming up with the hand open in the way they have it, a bit like

:07:35. > :07:39.a spaghetti separator. Sometimes, it just comes off the fingers, not the

:07:40. > :07:41.tops off the knuckles. If it comes off the pads, it can be called as

:07:42. > :07:53.illegal play. So, technical time-out, perhaps

:07:54. > :07:55.things not as bad as they could have been but it is Poland in the

:07:56. > :09:01.ascendancy, 14-7 up. Despite the breeze, it's very, very

:09:02. > :09:07.warm out there on the court. As you might expect in Copacabana beach.

:09:08. > :09:15.That was a magnificent shot from Kolosinska. Falling backwards and

:09:16. > :09:27.getting the ball to the opposite sideline. She's smiling.

:09:28. > :09:43.The USA kept it in play. Sweat couldn't get it back over, and

:09:44. > :09:57.Poland are getting further and further away from the USA.

:09:58. > :10:24.Almost served into the middle of court from Fendrick. You can see she

:10:25. > :10:42.hits this, there isn't any spin on it whatsoever.

:10:43. > :10:48.It must have caught Fendrick, which is why she was turning to hit the

:10:49. > :11:16.ball instead of popping it up. Good arm swing, good extension, and

:11:17. > :11:22.a decent rap on the ball, she stunned that one.

:11:23. > :11:30.Oh, top serve. That one dropped right down in front of Poland. That

:11:31. > :11:38.is in part because the wind is in the faces of the USA. They have the

:11:39. > :11:44.good end, as it were. Poland have to be lively on their feet to get the

:11:45. > :11:49.ball up off the sand. And then they've got the skills to get the

:11:50. > :11:58.side out, and now they moved to the good end. Three points required by

:11:59. > :12:28.them to get this set wrapped up and move the game to a decider.

:12:29. > :12:32.It was the right idea, breaking from the net but she couldn't find the

:12:33. > :12:55.control to get it back to Brzostek. This is exactly what the USA needed,

:12:56. > :13:00.that run-off points, that little bit of momentum they can use to try to

:13:01. > :13:06.take this forward into the deciding set, dare I say it we are going to

:13:07. > :13:09.go into the deciding set. With the way Poland have been playing, it's

:13:10. > :13:13.difficult not to see them find three points. Let's see if the USA can

:13:14. > :13:52.make it any more interesting. Everybody tries to replicate the

:13:53. > :13:58.Brazilians, in terms of breaking from the net and playing high hands

:13:59. > :14:00.defence, but only those two from Brazil are the best in the world at

:14:01. > :14:18.it. That was a belter from Kolosinska,

:14:19. > :14:19.bringing up set .4 Poland. It's a question of when they take second

:14:20. > :14:39.set. It's going to be a free ball.

:14:40. > :14:43.Kolosinska, for the set... And she has done it off the block and out of

:14:44. > :14:47.play. Poland take the second set 21-13. It is 1-1, going into a

:14:48. > :16:00.decider. So the second set statistics really

:16:01. > :16:06.tell us all we need to know in terms of that it is 1-1 and we are into a

:16:07. > :16:11.decider. Poland with the server and the USA receiving the race to 15 to

:16:12. > :16:21.see who will post an opening game win in pool A. No technical time-out

:16:22. > :16:27.in these deciding sets and the teams change ends on multiples of five

:16:28. > :16:40.points on the way to 15. It is the USA that gets the opening point.

:16:41. > :16:53.Kendrick with the serve. With the wind at her back she needs to be

:16:54. > :16:59.careful not put much on it. Sweat gets involved. Everybody is working

:17:00. > :17:04.hard and still the ball went hit the sand, but it does now, and it's the

:17:05. > :17:08.USA that take the point I would you believe it, after that second set

:17:09. > :17:14.thumping, they have, flying in the third set here, leading 2-0. A real

:17:15. > :17:26.statement of intent for them. Well read by Brooke Sweat. Well finished.

:17:27. > :17:31.Spectacular views from the top of the Beach Volleyball Arena, looking

:17:32. > :17:33.out into the Atlantic Ocean. Spectacular views here on Centre

:17:34. > :17:43.Court as we witnessed this thrilling match between the USA and Poland.

:17:44. > :17:52.Good arc, chase is on. Oh, that was so unlucky. Fendrick's legs going

:17:53. > :17:58.ten to the dozen but they couldn't seem to get close enough to the ball

:17:59. > :18:03.to get a decent contact on it. It is like a cartoon, legs going but not

:18:04. > :18:09.getting any forward omentum. Unfortunately she couldn't get it

:18:10. > :18:14.back over the net. The first point for Poland. A gift straight back for

:18:15. > :18:41.the USA. That one will land in. The first

:18:42. > :18:48.end. USA have made the running, they have the lead, and they go to the

:18:49. > :18:53.good end, so that's a pretty good series of points for them to take

:18:54. > :18:54.three from, what is perceived to be the bad end, with the wind at their

:18:55. > :19:07.backs. A good leave. That was gunning for

:19:08. > :19:09.the baseline. A split-second decision by Lauren Fendrick to let

:19:10. > :19:32.it go. Tidy side at that time by Poland. --

:19:33. > :19:53.side out. Just see how much that wind is

:19:54. > :19:59.picking up now. How much more control is required of the beach

:20:00. > :20:05.volleyball. Top blocking from Kolosinska, Poland ). -- Poland

:20:06. > :20:40.right back in it. Well picked off and well put down.

:20:41. > :20:47.Poland are back in the groove and they are back in front and the

:20:48. > :20:53.Polish fans are ecstatic. An excellent read from Brzostek and a

:20:54. > :21:09.great finish as one onto that baseline.

:21:10. > :21:13.It is getting better and better and both teams have scored more points

:21:14. > :21:25.at the bad end and they have other good time.

:21:26. > :22:56.Nicely played again. Poland are on a roll. USA are under pressure.

:22:57. > :23:07.There are shouts of USA, USA. They certainly need some points. The ball

:23:08. > :23:12.was not hit high enough to allow the high hands defence. The ball hits

:23:13. > :23:19.the sideline and Poland take another point. They are getting closer to

:23:20. > :23:26.victory. Had a look, could see the line was open, and took it.

:23:27. > :23:31.Kolosinska once again goes through to block. This is a free ball for

:23:32. > :23:53.Poland. It could be 9-4. It is 9-4. One block was called mid-rally, I'm

:23:54. > :23:56.not sure that Brooke Sweat saw it because she started to run to the

:23:57. > :24:09.line instead of holding her line crosscourt.

:24:10. > :24:17.Crosscourt was there to be hit and there to be hit hard, but for some

:24:18. > :24:22.reason Lauren Fendrick tried to roll into the line where the block was

:24:23. > :24:25.and whether defence was running too. Sometimes you just really have to

:24:26. > :24:29.back yourself and almost tell yourself to get up and hit it and

:24:30. > :24:34.get up and move and get up and do what you need to do. It is not quite

:24:35. > :24:42.happening for the USA, is a? Would you believe it? It is a cruel low

:24:43. > :24:49.for Fendrick and Sweat as Kolosinska comes up with an ace serve courtesy

:24:50. > :24:53.of the net. They are 11-4 up and they are four points away from

:24:54. > :25:04.victory in the USA looked to be all but out of it. Another look at that

:25:05. > :25:09.ace serve from Poland. It is another ace serve for Poland. That time

:25:10. > :25:22.right towards the baseline. Fendrick thought it was going out.

:25:23. > :25:28.Fendrick will be thinking, why didn't I do that three points ago?

:25:29. > :25:34.She is the tallest player on the sand and when she gets up and hits

:25:35. > :25:44.like that she has been unstoppable. It is easy to say that when you are

:25:45. > :25:53.sat watching. It will stay and play, Poland have to go again. A lovely

:25:54. > :25:55.angle. Brzostek made sure it hit the sand. Poland are two away from

:25:56. > :26:15.victory. Chance for Poland ringing out around

:26:16. > :26:25.the beach volleyball and charts for the USA have gone quiet. -- chance.

:26:26. > :26:35.They might start to be heard again as that one goes down for Fendrick.

:26:36. > :26:42.That was a really good pick-up, wasn't it? It had to come back. Only

:26:43. > :26:52.one place a good comeback, angle and Sweat was waiting for it. Fendrick

:26:53. > :27:01.made sure it went down. A real test of character now fully USA. It is

:27:02. > :27:04.Kolosinska who puts the ball on the sand and it is now match point for

:27:05. > :27:16.Poland. They have a hat full of them.

:27:17. > :27:24.Kolosinska with the serve. Fendrick again the target. Fendrick to keep

:27:25. > :27:31.the USA in it, she has done that. Now it really is backs to the wall

:27:32. > :27:44.time for the USA. They cannot allow Poland to slide out. -- side out.

:27:45. > :27:49.Kolosinska for the match. She is going to get another chance. Does

:27:50. > :27:55.she know? Brzostek puts it over, well picked up by Sweat. Would you

:27:56. > :28:00.believe it? It wouldn't go over. All of the hard work is to no avail and

:28:01. > :28:09.it is Poland who take the cert 15-7, and the match by 2-1.

:28:10. > :28:15.ORE: so, Poland do it, winning the beach volleyball against USA in pool

:28:16. > :28:19.a buy two sets to one. They need the decider but the Polish pair came out

:28:20. > :28:27.champions and took a well-deserved round of applause down there on

:28:28. > :28:32.Copacabana. The sunshine seems to have left us at the Olympic Park. It

:28:33. > :28:35.looks great down there on Copacabana right now so we will bring you

:28:36. > :28:41.up-to-date with some of the action we have seen at the park so we will

:28:42. > :28:45.go to the fencing. We will bring you and these guys, these wonderful

:28:46. > :28:50.volunteers, let's bring you up-to-date with the headlines, shall

:28:51. > :28:59.we? Richard Kruse one against the

:29:00. > :29:05.Algerian and he goes in the last 16 now against Andrea Cassara of Italy.

:29:06. > :29:09.Richard Kruse is the last British hope in the men's foil because we

:29:10. > :29:14.saw James Andrew Davies moved into the last 16 but he was 8-2 up

:29:15. > :29:22.against Tim assassin from Russia but he lost in that match. Laurence

:29:23. > :29:28.Halsted is also out. -- Timor satin. The reigning Olympic women's tennis

:29:29. > :29:33.champion, Serena Williams, is out on Centre Park here at the Olympic Park

:29:34. > :29:41.and she has 22 grand slams to her name and she is playing Daria

:29:42. > :30:01.Gavrilova over who was standing in a way of her immediate title defence.

:30:02. > :30:22.He's been waiting some time, Adam Peaty to take to the Olympic Games

:30:23. > :30:25.and he goes in the 100 metre breaststroke final after setting a

:30:26. > :30:33.world record in the heats last night. If you want to watch that,

:30:34. > :30:38.2:50am your time. He's ready, and you can watch it live on the BBC.

:30:39. > :30:42.It'll be on the Red Button on the BBC sport website, on the apt and

:30:43. > :30:46.most likely you'll be able to see it on BBC One as well. It could be

:30:47. > :30:52.Great Britain's first gold medal of the games. He is in fantastic form.

:30:53. > :30:57.If it doesn't come of their, it could happen in the road race. So

:30:58. > :31:01.much expected in Lizzie Armitstead. She is the current reigning world

:31:02. > :31:05.champion and she is in contention right now along the road race

:31:06. > :31:11.course. Watch it right now on BBC One. There will be uninterrupted

:31:12. > :31:16.coverage of it on the Red Button. Next up on BBC One, another world

:31:17. > :31:20.champion, James Guy, in the 200-metre freestyle heats. He had a

:31:21. > :31:27.go in the 400-metre freestyle final last night and he couldn't hold out

:31:28. > :31:32.although he led for much of the race. James Guy coming up next on

:31:33. > :31:42.BBC One. We're going to continue with the watery theme. Canoe slalom

:31:43. > :31:47.is finally ready to go. Matthew Pinsent is standing by for us.

:31:48. > :31:53.Finally all those fans waiting to watch the action can enjoy the canoe

:31:54. > :31:58.slalom. Absolutely. One hour ago, the wind was gusting around here,

:31:59. > :32:04.that has died away, and we have still got the sunshine but most

:32:05. > :32:08.importantly the wind has died down sufficiently for the competition to

:32:09. > :32:12.start. David Florence will go in the C1 and everyone is relieved the

:32:13. > :32:19.canoe slalom can get under way from here in Rio. Just tell us how the

:32:20. > :32:24.competition is going to go because we see a couple of runs for the

:32:25. > :32:30.individuals, don't we? That's right. All the individual paddlers have a

:32:31. > :32:34.preliminary heat. They get two chances to make it through to the

:32:35. > :32:39.semifinal. So, for David Florence, he's got to post a time in the top

:32:40. > :32:43.16, so I think the tactic will be he tries to get down the course, use

:32:44. > :32:48.the opportunity to go as quick as he can, then there will be a period of

:32:49. > :32:56.20 minutes after his run whether he assesses if he can improve, he will

:32:57. > :33:01.have a look, have a discussion with his coach, see where he is placed,

:33:02. > :33:05.and then he could say I've done enough, I'm safely through to the

:33:06. > :33:12.semifinal and leave it at that. The same for Joe Clarke in the K-1 who

:33:13. > :33:18.goes soon after. It is a calming moment for their nerves. Get the

:33:19. > :33:22.first run under the belt. Matthew Pinsent, thank you for keeping us

:33:23. > :33:26.up-to-date. We will be back with Matthew later on in the programme

:33:27. > :33:28.but, as he mentioned, the canoe slalom is one for the adrenaline

:33:29. > :33:40.junkies. If you don't know your sport, here

:33:41. > :33:45.is the guide. The Olympic sport of canoe slalom consists of a course of

:33:46. > :33:48.up to 300 metres of whitewater rapids with elite athletes able to

:33:49. > :33:52.complete the course under two minutes. There are four events,

:33:53. > :33:56.prefer men and one for women, and they all take place on the same

:33:57. > :33:59.stretch of water. The differences between kayaking and canoeing are

:34:00. > :34:03.the sitting positions of the athletes and the number of blades on

:34:04. > :34:12.the paddle. In kayak, a paddler is seated with their legs in front

:34:13. > :34:15.using a double bladed paddle. Canoeists kneel in the boat and have

:34:16. > :34:17.a single bladed paddle. In the competition, athletes race course

:34:18. > :34:24.which is a series of gates, either red or green, and must be negotiated

:34:25. > :34:29.in number order. The polls determine the direction the paddlers must pass

:34:30. > :34:33.through the gates. The head of the competitor must cross the line of

:34:34. > :34:38.the polls in the correct direction otherwise they will be depenalised.

:34:39. > :34:44.Touching the poll receives a penalty. Missing a gate altogether,

:34:45. > :34:51.pushing the gate or going through it in the wrong direction in care is a

:34:52. > :34:55.52nd penalty. In heats, the athletes from the course twice, the better

:34:56. > :34:59.rough the runs is counted and determines who qualifies for the

:35:00. > :35:04.semifinals. In the semifinals and finals, competitors only have one

:35:05. > :35:10.athlete. The quickest time wins after any penalties have been added.

:35:11. > :35:14.The canoe slalom has been a happy hunting ground of late. Tim Baillie

:35:15. > :35:19.and Etienne Stott came away with Great Britain's first ever gold

:35:20. > :35:24.medal in the event. It was part of a British 1-2 because they came ahead

:35:25. > :35:28.of David Florence and Richard Hounslow, who took the silver. That

:35:29. > :35:33.unfortunately won't be able to happen again because in a change to

:35:34. > :35:39.the format the organisers have only allowed one nation in one event. So,

:35:40. > :35:44.we won't see that action or that same level of success but that

:35:45. > :35:49.silver medal for David Florence was his second silver in as many games.

:35:50. > :35:54.He arrived here with his father, flying the plane for the whole canoe

:35:55. > :35:58.slalom team, and he arrived here safe and well and ready to make sure

:35:59. > :36:05.he leaves Rio with a medal of a different colour this time.

:36:06. > :36:15.They've got the silver medal! David Florence is out of this Olympic

:36:16. > :36:21.competition. This is Lea Valley, a place that has bittersweet feelings

:36:22. > :36:25.for you. You won the silver in London 2012, but then it didn't go

:36:26. > :36:31.quite as you'd like it too. I don't associated with that. This is where

:36:32. > :36:36.I put in all the hard work and this is where I've had all my great

:36:37. > :36:40.performances. I won the World Cup, the world Championships here. David

:36:41. > :36:46.Florence, the world champion from 2013, is the world champion again in

:36:47. > :36:50.2015. But, you know, I look back at the Olympics in London and I think,

:36:51. > :36:57.there was some disappointment in the C1. It seems a long time ago and

:36:58. > :37:04.almost forgotten now, strangely. You are quite philosophical about it and

:37:05. > :37:10.I suppose you have to be. It is a real advantage to be able to accept

:37:11. > :37:14.things that are out of your control. If you can accept that, you can work

:37:15. > :37:18.on the things that are under your control which is far more motivating

:37:19. > :37:22.and far more likely to give you the best chance possible of helping you

:37:23. > :37:27.achieve what you want, which is gold medals in Rio. I motivated and

:37:28. > :37:31.driven, and I've trained to the best of my ability for this Olympic cycle

:37:32. > :37:35.and if I get everything right, I give myself a good chance. You're a

:37:36. > :37:41.father since London and you're going to be a father again, you're

:37:42. > :37:45.married, and a in your life. Has it done anything for you? It's one of

:37:46. > :37:50.these things, it is the most ordinary thing to do in the world,

:37:51. > :37:54.to have children, but when it is you, it seems exciting and it is a

:37:55. > :37:58.lot of fun. And I love having a family to go back to, but it hasn't

:37:59. > :38:03.changed the way I go about completing my sport or what I'm

:38:04. > :38:08.trying to do in Rio. How would you compare yourself for years and?

:38:09. > :38:14.Older and wiser? I've had a very good Olympic cycle, the best yet.

:38:15. > :38:17.I'd never won the world championships prior to the Olympic

:38:18. > :38:22.Games, and I've won three world championship titles. I'm enjoying my

:38:23. > :38:26.career as ever, and I've had a lot of good runs in the last few years.

:38:27. > :38:31.It's going to come down to making the most of every training session

:38:32. > :38:35.and every opportunity to learn. And being as ready as I possibly can.

:38:36. > :38:39.What would it mean to you to get a gold medal? It would be an

:38:40. > :38:43.incredible achievement, something that I don't take lightly as to how

:38:44. > :38:48.difficult it is to achieving, even if you are the best in the world.

:38:49. > :38:52.There are so many guys in our sport to have been standout athletes. It

:38:53. > :39:01.would be a phenomenal achievement. And something I'd be very proud of.

:39:02. > :39:05.Well, he's had a four year wait to try and win Olympic gold again, and

:39:06. > :39:09.he's had an even more delayed weight this afternoon just because of the

:39:10. > :39:14.weather but David Florence will take to the canoe slalom course in the

:39:15. > :39:24.C1. We can join our commentators down there in Diadora, Helen Reeves

:39:25. > :39:32.and Patrick Atherton. Welcome to the canoe slalom. The

:39:33. > :39:38.heats have just got under way. No one has negotiated the course well.

:39:39. > :39:43.We will see some better runs as they go through the startled. 19 in the

:39:44. > :39:48.C1 event, and the best in terms of world ranking going last. This is

:39:49. > :40:03.Rossi of Argentina who has struggled on the course so far. The best time

:40:04. > :40:15.has come from Rossi of China -- Jianming Shu of China. Burrows of

:40:16. > :40:20.Australia, and he will attack the initial part of this course. Just a

:40:21. > :40:26.reminder, the first difficult section coming at Gates seven,

:40:27. > :40:31.eight, nine, ten, then 14, 15 and 16 proving problematic. Everything

:40:32. > :40:34.after gate 19th requires a lot of strength and fitness, and finesse as

:40:35. > :40:41.well. And no one has put it all together. He's getting off to a nice

:40:42. > :40:47.start, he's managing to get the power of the boat dry which means he

:40:48. > :40:56.will be fast. This is what we would expect to see. He's really driving

:40:57. > :41:01.the blade into the water, we want to see the vertical drop of the paddle

:41:02. > :41:07.in the water. Burrows, his father comes from the UK, coached by Mike

:41:08. > :41:12.Druce, and throughout 2013-14, he was a regular semifinalist and here

:41:13. > :41:20.he is in the Olympic Games, looking for a place in the semifinals in two

:41:21. > :41:24.days' time. Just has to beat five competitors to achieve that, and if

:41:25. > :41:31.he goes into top spot here, which is looking possible for Burrows, he is

:41:32. > :41:40.assured of a place. It is the best time from the two keeps that counts

:41:41. > :41:44.but without too much time from the heats, you're at your freshest. He's

:41:45. > :41:48.looking very controlled. Equally, there is nothing like having time on

:41:49. > :41:54.the water and learning about what is happening. Well, no penalties and

:41:55. > :41:59.Borrows celebrates. He is going to be good enough. 11 seconds inside

:42:00. > :42:02.the previous best, that is a fantastic run from Borrows. The

:42:03. > :42:07.Australian may decide that is enough. He may decide that is good

:42:08. > :42:11.enough to get him through. Tactics will play a part in this

:42:12. > :42:18.qualification process. Smedley now for Canada. Dropping through gate to

:42:19. > :42:25.and into that first upstream gate. Gate three, nice and quick. Paddling

:42:26. > :42:31.on the left-hand side, so in the C1, the canoe category, we have people

:42:32. > :42:35.who will paddle either on the left or right. This does determine how

:42:36. > :42:41.they may approach some of the gate sequences. Have you seen any

:42:42. > :42:46.advantages to being left or right? It is a fairly straight course.

:42:47. > :42:51.Maybe on some of the staggers but nothing will be affecting the higher

:42:52. > :42:55.ranked athletes. It is an interesting course they've developed

:42:56. > :42:59.in Diadora from gate one to 20, it is a dead straight line.

:43:00. > :43:04.Significance of that, they don't need as much water or as much height

:43:05. > :43:07.of water to generate the power because you don't lose so much power

:43:08. > :43:12.with the water driving into the side of the course, and then a little

:43:13. > :43:19.time in 20 as they go over bottom drop, as it is called, and we see

:43:20. > :43:24.Smedley do that, through that upstream gate at 19. This is where

:43:25. > :43:31.he needs to be clean and strong. He was being kicked by the way. He's

:43:32. > :43:36.struggling. His wasting precious energy which you don't have. His

:43:37. > :43:41.arms are fatigued and he's working hard to drive into the upstream

:43:42. > :43:50.gate. Three strokes to get back up to the final upstream. He is surely

:43:51. > :43:56.going to be inside second place. He goes into second, four seconds of

:43:57. > :44:00.penalties added to Smedley's time. He will be relatively happy with

:44:01. > :44:06.that but he will know there's plenty of room for improvement and I'm sure

:44:07. > :44:16.his family watching. His mum is a physio, his sister is his manager.

:44:17. > :44:23.Nice way to have it. Now the Portuguese Carvalho. Heavy start,

:44:24. > :44:27.then nicely into gate three. This is where he wants composure. This first

:44:28. > :44:31.part of the course needs to be setting yourself up, getting the

:44:32. > :44:37.drive, getting the rhythm, getting confident before you get to the

:44:38. > :44:42.tricky sections. Using the back of the water in gate eight, that

:44:43. > :44:59.swirly, upstream gate. Nine, that is looking nice. 1.29 inside, Carvalho,

:45:00. > :45:04.and the lead at the moment, Rossi overtaken by Borrows. The Australian

:45:05. > :45:10.leads. That is an impressive time. Now no option but to go back for

:45:11. > :45:14.that gate. 16 was predicted to be a problematic one. We were looking at

:45:15. > :45:17.it and there is a way that is sometimes there and sometimes not,

:45:18. > :45:23.and you can see Carvalho was waiting for the wave but it wasn't there so

:45:24. > :45:28.he shot past the gate, causing all sorts of problems and a real-time

:45:29. > :45:33.deficit now. Over bottom drop and safety up through 19 but having had

:45:34. > :45:38.a lead of over a second and a half, that would have been thrown away by

:45:39. > :45:45.the mistake at 17. And now just a question of seeing if he can squeeze

:45:46. > :45:51.into the top three. As the eighth man down. Third would be good

:45:52. > :45:56.enough. Just a reminder, two heats, and it's the fastest time from those

:45:57. > :46:03.two runs that counts. The course won't change.

:46:04. > :46:09.Very frustrated with that mistake. He will go away and I am sure he

:46:10. > :46:20.will not be making the same mistake the second run. We go on to Grzegorz

:46:21. > :46:23.Hedwig from Poland. 12th in the World Championships last year,

:46:24. > :46:30.seventh in the European Championships this year. He finished

:46:31. > :46:34.in the top ten in the pre-Olympic final, but I have a feeling they

:46:35. > :46:38.only qualified eight into the last run, quite a small attendance, so

:46:39. > :46:42.they can't read too much into that but all the teams have been out here

:46:43. > :46:48.and, in fact, the British have been out here more than anyone else. Yes,

:46:49. > :46:52.I saw the Brits on Facebook saying it was the 12th week out here and

:46:53. > :46:55.they have utilised every single bit of water time they possibly could

:46:56. > :46:58.which is why they did early selection last October so they could

:46:59. > :47:02.utilise the trading slots because the international committee set out

:47:03. > :47:06.official training slots where people could come in and other teams were

:47:07. > :47:11.taking nine weeks here so it has been a lot of training and that is

:47:12. > :47:14.the key in slalom, it is all about knowing the water, every single inch

:47:15. > :47:25.of it and whether it changes or whether it doesn't. He didn't have

:47:26. > :47:29.the problem that we saw from Jose Carvalho of Portugal at 16 and this

:47:30. > :47:34.is looking like a nice run from Grzegorz Hedwig. He is really

:47:35. > :47:39.managing to keep the boat speed on. He is lining himself up for the last

:47:40. > :47:45.upstream gaped. It is all about being tied in with one stroke Young

:47:46. > :47:49.1/ driving out. The last gate now for Grzegorz Hedwig. The drive for

:47:50. > :47:55.the line under fractions of a section -- second could be

:47:56. > :48:08.important. Jose Carvalho three goes ahead of Ian Borrows. The top four

:48:09. > :48:17.positions are Grzegorz Hedwig and Ian Borrows and then the Brazilian.

:48:18. > :48:21.Aleksandr Lipatov now for Russia. He is 25 years old and a tidy unsafe

:48:22. > :48:24.paddler. He has a long reach which makes him look as though he is going

:48:25. > :48:30.slower than everyone else, it is the size of his reach that is deceptive.

:48:31. > :48:34.He trained at one of the regular used World Cup courses a lot of the

:48:35. > :48:42.time. It is very different to this one. It certainly is. He is using

:48:43. > :48:46.steering strokes and being very patient between Gates seven and

:48:47. > :48:49.eight where it is quite changeable. He was just waiting to see what

:48:50. > :48:53.would happen and then putting a stroke in. It is all about reading,

:48:54. > :48:56.and the experience sometimes helps in these circumstances where you

:48:57. > :49:00.can't go all guns blazing, you need to wait and see what is happening

:49:01. > :49:06.with the water and be very reactive. The wave is not quite very had to

:49:07. > :49:08.work hardly just ducked inside 16, the athletes have three very careful

:49:09. > :49:14.when they are leaning back because it is up to the judges because they

:49:15. > :49:18.will look very closely to CF they had some of their head and some of

:49:19. > :49:22.their body in and if they don't they will be awarded a penalty. 2.08

:49:23. > :49:29.outside the best time now at the moment. A 52nd penalty will

:49:30. > :49:33.obviously ruin this run, if he's got it, caught in the hydraulic fair and

:49:34. > :49:38.just churned around. He may possibly decide that this is not going to be

:49:39. > :49:41.the run accounts but surely he wants to post something respectable just

:49:42. > :49:49.to take the pressure off his second round. They will go in the same

:49:50. > :49:52.order so at halfway down the field Aleksandr Lipatov won't have the

:49:53. > :49:57.luxury of sitting out the second run after this performance. He is five

:49:58. > :50:02.-- here's five seconds outside the best time set by Grzegorz Hedwig of

:50:03. > :50:05.Poland and work to do for Aleksandr Lipatov. He got to the semifinal in

:50:06. > :50:17.Lee Valley last year and he wants to go one better. Now, back to the top

:50:18. > :50:25.Vitezslav Gebas of the Czech Republic has made many of the finals

:50:26. > :50:28.in the last few years which is a sign of consistency. Consistency is

:50:29. > :50:33.a real key, when you're coming to major competitions you know you

:50:34. > :50:36.should be at the final and Olympic Games competitions are not as deep

:50:37. > :50:39.as in a World Cup or World Championship and get into the final

:50:40. > :50:43.is all about getting that. First of all you have to get to the Olympic

:50:44. > :50:46.Games in an incredibly difficult selection process but once you are

:50:47. > :50:51.there you must have consistency and this is all really just a process to

:50:52. > :50:56.get them into that final in a couple of days. As you explained earlier

:50:57. > :51:00.the format for this race is so different from World Cups and World

:51:01. > :51:04.Championships. If we take Lee Valley, the World Championships last

:51:05. > :51:08.year, for example, in the men's K1 for example there were 102 entrance

:51:09. > :51:15.and there are only 21 here so you see different psychologies. It is

:51:16. > :51:21.that gate 16 that is causing problems again. It is the surge in

:51:22. > :51:24.the course and when the wave is that it's not too bad but when it is

:51:25. > :51:27.there to give you the assistance to get across to the right-hand side

:51:28. > :51:30.the danger is that you slip by and in the qualification process you

:51:31. > :51:35.have no option but to make your way back up and it clatters the next of

:51:36. > :51:40.the upstream gaped at 19. The tale got dipped down there again at gate

:51:41. > :51:46.20 an hour surfing across into 21, this is eating away into the time

:51:47. > :51:51.deficit that he already occurred at going back to 16. Is it wise to sit

:51:52. > :51:56.and watch this, there have been plenty of mistakes, will people be

:51:57. > :52:02.unnerved by that all learn from it? They will learn from it. The course

:52:03. > :52:05.is relatively straightforward. It is a technical course anyway and

:52:06. > :52:08.they've all spent many hours training and watching it so they

:52:09. > :52:13.won't be unnerved but they will certainly take some of the tips that

:52:14. > :52:20.they have seen and put that into their own processes and their own

:52:21. > :52:25.plans. So, from Vitezslav Gebas to the Czech Republic -- of the Czech

:52:26. > :52:33.Republic to the USA and we have Casey Eichfeld who is racing in the

:52:34. > :52:40.C1 embassy two. Casey Eichfeld has a busy programme. He paddles for wild

:52:41. > :52:47.water Canoe club and he is the sort of man who has plenty of raw speed

:52:48. > :52:51.so if he has a clear run he will be quick. You can see that from the

:52:52. > :52:59.clock already. He is inside the fastest time from Grzegorz Hedwig.

:53:00. > :53:02.Oh, my goodness, that is not what he wanted to do. I was about to say he

:53:03. > :53:07.was really using the power but then he just got the tale of the boat

:53:08. > :53:16.caught and he spun himself around far too quickly and he wasn't

:53:17. > :53:19.expecting that. It makes Gates 15 and 16 relatively easy and he is no

:53:20. > :53:25.doubt well aware of the problems it has been causing other athletes.

:53:26. > :53:32.Casey Eichfeld I think in his second run, provided this one is good, will

:53:33. > :53:35.take more risks here. A great line between 20 and 21, he got the nose

:53:36. > :53:41.of the boat round, pointing river right so he could drive across. .

:53:42. > :53:48.The last upstream gate is a heavy cross, you can see him really

:53:49. > :53:53.digging deep on his crossbar. This is respectable, it will not take the

:53:54. > :53:58.teat -- lead away from Grzegorz Hedwig but it should be good enough.

:53:59. > :54:10.Remember from 19 paddlers, we will be whittling it down to 14 for the

:54:11. > :54:14.semifinal in two days' time. Number seven Ander Elosegi of Spain. Bronze

:54:15. > :54:17.at the European Championships recently and picked up four

:54:18. > :54:22.penalties in that race and he knows he would have been in the medals if

:54:23. > :54:34.he had gone clean. Two Spanish boats in these Olympics, both with good

:54:35. > :54:38.chances. Nice and tight there under eight, he used the wave really well

:54:39. > :54:43.between seven and eight and a nice turn around nine and ten and he is

:54:44. > :54:47.up on the split. Half a second up. He just needs to keep the nose

:54:48. > :54:51.tracking nicely downstream, keep the paddle strokes nice indeed. You have

:54:52. > :54:55.to remember this is the first time they are down the scores in this

:54:56. > :54:59.Olympic Games. Oh, he touched the outside poll. We will be discussing

:55:00. > :55:03.with the coaches yesterday about the poll heights and they are very

:55:04. > :55:06.regulated and they have to be extremely precise and every gate has

:55:07. > :55:10.to be the same but with changeable water has to be quite tricky and the

:55:11. > :55:13.athletes have two decide whether they will take the risk of taking

:55:14. > :55:18.the bow under the polls which is where you want to be because it is

:55:19. > :55:23.the fastest line but do you seek around outside which could take a

:55:24. > :55:27.fraction of time. He may have saved half a second but he threw away two

:55:28. > :55:34.by touching the gate. Remember this man has a pretty good Olympic

:55:35. > :55:38.record. Fourth in 2008 and fourth in 2012. Can he turn those two results

:55:39. > :55:45.into a medal this time around? It will be a really tough task with

:55:46. > :55:49.some really big paddlers here, and across the line for Ander Elosegi in

:55:50. > :55:56.another solid time, just outside Grzegorz Hedwig and he goes into

:55:57. > :56:00.second place. The Brazilian is still around the bottom of the field and

:56:01. > :56:05.without doubt he will have two improving the second run if he wants

:56:06. > :56:08.a chance of going through. We have six paddlers still to go and the

:56:09. > :56:18.first of those is Sideris Tasiadis from Germany. He is really driving

:56:19. > :56:22.across the start with a very quick paddle rate. They all have different

:56:23. > :56:27.styles. He has a very quick paddle right. Tight around three. As I

:56:28. > :56:30.mentioned earlier, they are really looking at the lines ahead of what

:56:31. > :56:33.they are coming into so in a stagger sequence they know where they need

:56:34. > :56:37.to be at the end and they will try to get the lines as precise as

:56:38. > :56:42.possible. It quickly uses the backflow of the Eddie upstream there

:56:43. > :56:45.and a quick turn at nine. He has his nose bouncing on the top of the

:56:46. > :56:48.water and it is all about keeping the bow of the boat as dry as

:56:49. > :56:52.possible because every time water goes on the front of the boat it

:56:53. > :56:55.kills the boat speed and you have to re-accelerate again, using energy

:56:56. > :57:00.that you don't want to. Nicely in the upstream. Across the back of 15

:57:01. > :57:07.and certainly there will be no problems coming across to 16. He

:57:08. > :57:12.took the silver medal in 2012. Is he in the sort of form to do it again?

:57:13. > :57:20.The man who denied him last time is no longer in the paddling scene so

:57:21. > :57:24.maybe he feels that his opportunity. He is a bit low at 19 but again he

:57:25. > :57:30.is getting into a tricky bit and getting caught by the way. I am

:57:31. > :57:33.noticing that the righty paddlers, the paddlers that dominate

:57:34. > :57:37.predominately on the right-hand side are finding this easier here because

:57:38. > :57:41.they need to turn the bow around when they hit the stopper

:57:42. > :57:44.afterwards. The lefties are finding it more difficult because they don't

:57:45. > :57:47.have the same strength. It will be interesting to see whether they

:57:48. > :57:56.change anything between the two heats. 3.8 outside after that

:57:57. > :58:04.mistake at 16. 96.6 seven. He is showing us that he has got class but

:58:05. > :58:07.he needs to iron out those mistakes. Sideris Tasiadis will not win this

:58:08. > :58:13.Olympics with a performance like that. Onto Japan now and unexciting

:58:14. > :58:17.paddler, Takuya Haneda. He actually lives in practice love and he is a

:58:18. > :58:22.silky smooth paddler. Have a look at his top arm. Always as straight as

:58:23. > :58:27.you like, which is slightly unusual, but very very effective. Seventh in

:58:28. > :58:38.the last Olympics and he has two good World Cups, he was fourth and

:58:39. > :58:42.then later he finished third. He was beaten both times by a man who is

:58:43. > :58:46.not here. So many big names absence to the Olympics due to the

:58:47. > :58:50.qualifying process and many say it is harder to get to the Olympics and

:58:51. > :58:56.is to win it. It certainly has been said and is because there is only

:58:57. > :58:59.one place by nation and a lot of Nations could easily have three on a

:59:00. > :59:03.podium if you happen to be their day because they have such strength and

:59:04. > :59:07.depth so it is a very difficult process to get the Olympic Games and

:59:08. > :59:10.it does mean that normally in the Olympic year these guys are on

:59:11. > :59:16.absolute fire because they have had to push so hard to get here. So many

:59:17. > :59:20.different nations. Take the top ten nations, they have all got a

:59:21. > :59:23.different qualifying process. The Brits actually qualified very early,

:59:24. > :59:27.just so they knew the team and they could bring them out to Brazil and

:59:28. > :59:32.train them on the course. Other nations, like Germany, made their

:59:33. > :59:35.decisions quite late. Absolutely. Each nation do what they think is

:59:36. > :59:40.best and certainly the Brits, this time round, it is the first time

:59:41. > :59:44.they've done it, qualified team the year before the Olympic Games. Oh,

:59:45. > :59:51.being caught thereby that stopper, you have to keep your focus right to

:59:52. > :59:56.the end! That could have cost him the top spot but I think it will be

:59:57. > :00:04.good enough to put him through. Grzegorz Hedwig on 96.67 and Takuya

:00:05. > :00:12.Haneda has two penalties and he is on 98.6 nine. He is into fourth

:00:13. > :00:15.position as we watch Britain's number one, David Florence, what a

:00:16. > :00:19.record this man having major championships. Of course he took the

:00:20. > :00:24.silver medal in the C2 in London 2012 but he is the current world

:00:25. > :00:29.champion, having taken the title on home water in Lee Valley last year

:00:30. > :00:34.and that dynamic start from David Florence. Watch the clock and the

:00:35. > :00:41.splits, he is not hanging about. I suspect he wants to do one run and

:00:42. > :00:45.one run only. I imagine that is his game plan. That will spin there was

:00:46. > :00:48.part of the plan. It depends what side you paddler, as I mentioned

:00:49. > :00:52.earlier it depends what needs you decide to do and that was the first

:00:53. > :00:55.I seen anyone do a deliberate spin. David Florence full set me beyond

:00:56. > :01:00.this course to lay down his mark as early as the Canada looks like he's

:01:01. > :01:03.on to a good run at the moment, looking strong. 14, 15 and 16,

:01:04. > :01:20.remember have provided problems. He is a how we can thought his way

:01:21. > :01:23.across the water. A great example of how the right has an example at gay

:01:24. > :01:26.16. Did he get a touch? 61 on the clock at the moment and he is almost

:01:27. > :01:28.half a second inside Grzegorz Hedwig. Going into the top two

:01:29. > :01:31.should be good enough. He just ducks his head into 21 and he almost looks

:01:32. > :01:37.as though there is no stopper there and he is in great form. That is a

:01:38. > :01:41.nice move as well across into the final upstream at 23 back into the

:01:42. > :01:45.flour 24 and down through the last stop and now it is all about driving

:01:46. > :01:51.for the line. David Florence looking for the fastest time at he is going

:01:52. > :01:56.to be inside. Those bottom six gates sensational. He can pack his bags

:01:57. > :02:00.and head home to rest for 48 hours. Be interesting to see if he comes

:02:01. > :02:04.out just familiarise himself but it just looked to me as he wanted a

:02:05. > :02:08.brilliant time. That makes a statement to the rest of the field.

:02:09. > :02:12.The rest of the paddlers will be concerned about that. Great news to

:02:13. > :02:22.David Florence. He is the fastest time so far.

:02:23. > :02:36.Those three the highest ranking in the world at the moment. This is

:02:37. > :02:45.Benjamin Savsek from Slovenia, he lives in Micron. 0.71 up on the

:02:46. > :02:50.split. He does it like he's flooding and driving, almost dancing on top

:02:51. > :02:55.of the water. He just needs to keep it in control. Nicely round Gate 14.

:02:56. > :03:03.Gets the nose turned round, very nicely done, 16 happen to be there

:03:04. > :03:07.for him that time. Finished second behind Florence in the World

:03:08. > :03:11.Championships last year. Finished eighth in the Olympics, Florence on

:03:12. > :03:16.that occasion was down in tenth, but don't forget that the last four

:03:17. > :03:20.gates David Florence was electric and he did not make a mistake like

:03:21. > :03:25.that, I think that is Savsek's chance of going into the lead gone.

:03:26. > :03:29.When he looks at the replay and realise he was leading at 19, 20,

:03:30. > :03:37.that give the boost he wants for the big in two days' time. You have to

:03:38. > :03:40.keep that down the whole length of the course. You have got to keep

:03:41. > :03:47.your faith and keep enough energy so that you have got the power in your

:03:48. > :03:55.arms. 5.58, that is how quick it can turn around. He was 1.71 up with

:03:56. > :03:58.just five gates to go. Ends up over five seconds behind. Focus and

:03:59. > :04:08.concentration needed from Benjamin Savsek. If he is to end up this

:04:09. > :04:16.campaign as Olympic champion. Two very exciting paddlers coming up.

:04:17. > :04:20.The world champion in 2011, Denis Gargaud Chanut. He uses the water

:04:21. > :04:25.brilliantly well. He reads it perfectly. You may need to do that.

:04:26. > :04:35.He will challenge the time of David Florence today. Keep an eye on the

:04:36. > :04:43.clock. Driving across, using the offside with the cross-bow Strait.

:04:44. > :04:51.These canoes are kneeling up, they are sitting on their knees. Smooth

:04:52. > :04:57.at the moment or stop a fraction up on the first split that we saw.

:04:58. > :05:01.Looks so good when he goes over the drops, keeps the front of the boat

:05:02. > :05:06.nice and dry, keeps a speed through 15, shouldn't have a problem through

:05:07. > :05:10.16, he doesn't, that is as good as we have seen all day from the

:05:11. > :05:17.Frenchman. He looks to be on fire. Back into the flow quickly. No

:05:18. > :05:22.problems through 18. 1.5 nine. In a similar position to the one we saw

:05:23. > :05:28.from Benjamin Savsek. Savsek making mistakes at 19 and 20. Getting held

:05:29. > :05:32.on 20, that is two seconds gone and again the hydraulic getting the

:05:33. > :05:38.better of the Frenchman. It really is proving to be much more tricky

:05:39. > :05:43.for the left-handed competitors. That is why he decided to go for the

:05:44. > :05:47.spin move, that did not seem to go particularly well. He will be

:05:48. > :05:58.looking at that to come out for the second run and doing much better.

:05:59. > :06:03.Very frustrating. 7.92 outside. That cross stroke coming through 15, 16

:06:04. > :06:09.and really struggling on that bottom section. Could be that they are put

:06:10. > :06:12.out all of their energy in the first 20 gates and they have nothing left

:06:13. > :06:21.to give but they will learn something today, save something for

:06:22. > :06:25.the bottom five gates. He is a huge man, Benus, with a massive reach and

:06:26. > :06:31.will be taking advantage of that today. Four consecutive World

:06:32. > :06:40.Championship finals. You expect him to make at least the semifinal, if

:06:41. > :06:44.not to win it he seems to be taking his time and placing his paddles

:06:45. > :06:51.well. He seems as if he is a little bit on age. Needs to pick up the

:06:52. > :06:59.pace. Looks a little bit edgy. Needs to open up and be confident in the

:07:00. > :07:10.line that he's chosen. Surfing back and really pulling the nose around,

:07:11. > :07:18.catching that halfway, into 16. Needs to be gone at 17, very quick

:07:19. > :07:23.in and out at the upstream gates. Matej Benus making it look slow and

:07:24. > :07:33.safe but he is still only 0.8 outside. He is not wasted NEG so

:07:34. > :07:38.far. Matej Benus is safely through. One more upstream to go. He pulls

:07:39. > :07:43.his way across. He drops a little low, two extra strokes needed,

:07:44. > :07:53.drives the line, should not have any problems through 24. Just look for

:07:54. > :07:57.the fast water, and he finds it. 95.05, the time, which leaves world

:07:58. > :08:04.champion David Florence on top of the leaderboard after the first

:08:05. > :08:14.heat. And the top time, 94.1 one. Sensational stuff from David

:08:15. > :08:21.Florence. -- 94.11. Both Florence and Matej Benus are right-handers

:08:22. > :08:25.and seem to do that last section through 19-23 easier than the

:08:26. > :08:29.left-handed paddlers. It will be interesting to see how they come out

:08:30. > :08:40.in the second run, whether they decide to go for the spin at Gate

:08:41. > :08:45.20. David Florence doubling up in C-2. The core things are different.

:08:46. > :09:09.Top of the leaderboard, 94.11. Remember, 14 going through, only

:09:10. > :09:15.five athletes go out, the men on the bottom of the chart. At this slalom

:09:16. > :09:22.venue. They haven't got long to prepare themselves. Such a short

:09:23. > :09:26.interval between that. So often, they find that the fatty is still

:09:27. > :09:31.there. It will be interesting to see what they do. They will plan, they

:09:32. > :09:36.will make sure that they rehydrate and that they come out fighting.

:09:37. > :09:40.They will look at the video review, have a quick change, and they will

:09:41. > :09:51.be ready. It is a very tight turnaround. What an exemplary run

:09:52. > :10:00.from the world number one, David Florence. We have Matthew Pinsent

:10:01. > :10:04.joining us now. Matthew, job done. Feeling very happy about that

:10:05. > :10:09.performance. From David's point of view you'd want at the minimum to

:10:10. > :10:13.have a solid run but to come off the water and be the quickest of all

:10:14. > :10:17.over the course, as you say, absolutely job done. The world

:10:18. > :10:23.champion cementing his form from last year into the Rio competition.

:10:24. > :10:29.He seemed to get off to an absolute blinder shaving tenths of a second

:10:30. > :10:34.off that. They are familiar with this course because they have been

:10:35. > :10:38.here for a week, ten days, training on the course over the last six

:10:39. > :10:43.months. The way that it has worked, ever since this course has been

:10:44. > :10:47.built, the governing body has divided up the time and allowed

:10:48. > :10:51.certain teams onto the course to experience it, and Team GB have

:10:52. > :10:55.taken every possible chance to be here. The running total for the

:10:56. > :10:58.British paddlers is something like 12 weeks they have been out here in

:10:59. > :11:05.total. Seizing any moment to experience this water, learning is

:11:06. > :11:13.various idiosyncrasies. They will not see exactly how the gates are

:11:14. > :11:16.laid out until today. Absolutely, chapeau, hats off to David Florence,

:11:17. > :11:24.seizing that moment in the first run. Nicely done from David. We will

:11:25. > :11:29.be back with Matthew later on and we'll see Joe Clarke are taking to

:11:30. > :11:35.the water in the excitement there, we have been enjoying things down at

:11:36. > :11:39.the Olympics Tennis Centre. That is Centre court right now. It has been

:11:40. > :11:47.featuring arguably the greatest female tennis player in the modern

:11:48. > :11:52.era. Let's bring you up to date. Serena Williams is through to the

:11:53. > :12:07.last 32 of the Women's Singles. The reigning Olympic champion breezing

:12:08. > :12:13.past Gavilova, winning 6-4, 6-2. Not too bad at all for Great Britain's

:12:14. > :12:20.women in rugby, three wins of three in group C, and they made light work

:12:21. > :12:26.of Canada, winning 22-0. Emily Scarratt with a couple of tries. We

:12:27. > :12:33.have had no action so far today in the rowing. The weather putting paid

:12:34. > :12:38.to that. We have seen boats overturning and so that the safety

:12:39. > :12:46.of all the athletes, we are seeing no rowing until further notice at

:12:47. > :12:51.the Lagoa Stadium. Who's that? Don't take her away. Do you want to come

:12:52. > :12:59.and say hello to the BBC Four audience? Can you say hello in

:13:00. > :13:10.English? Hello! How about that? What is your main? It is Naomi. High

:13:11. > :13:17.five. Naomi, you are start back at home in the UK. Naomi is our new

:13:18. > :13:25.number one fan. I will let you get back to your dad. Look at this. It

:13:26. > :13:30.is a family affair. Naomi and family, thank you very much indeed.

:13:31. > :13:39.The atmosphere is buzzing at the Olympic Park. It has taken some

:13:40. > :13:44.time, and although we have lost the sunshine, we're going to top boxing

:13:45. > :13:49.now. Great hopes for Britain in the boxing after three gold medals in

:13:50. > :13:56.London 2012, they have sent the biggest team in the last 32 years,

:13:57. > :14:01.including 12 fighters from the 13 available, including Joshua Buatsi

:14:02. > :14:05.in the light heavyweight category. He is studying a sports science and

:14:06. > :14:09.management course and has put that on hold to try to be successful at

:14:10. > :14:15.the Olympics here in Rio. Just imagine what it would be like if he

:14:16. > :14:20.went back to Queen Mary University in September for the new semester

:14:21. > :14:26.with her Olympic medal. It would be an incredible story. Let's head over

:14:27. > :14:27.to Riocentro six, where the boxing is taking place. We will join it in

:14:28. > :14:40.the second round of three. Taking us through this is Richie

:14:41. > :14:49.Woodall and Ronald McIntosh. To the second round we go. Joshua Buatsi

:14:50. > :14:59.took the opening round and looked at the response that has elicited from

:15:00. > :15:04.Katande. He will be aware that he has conceded the opening round. That

:15:05. > :15:09.is a cracking shot. It has been ruled as a slip by the referee.

:15:10. > :15:20.Surely that helped him to that prone position on the canvas.

:15:21. > :15:29.Has got to keep that guard. Nice switch of attack. He has got to keep

:15:30. > :15:39.working with the jab, keep breaking the opponent down with the jab and

:15:40. > :15:43.setting up the right uppercut. By working with the jab, you are not

:15:44. > :15:51.getting too close to your opponent because this man is dangerous. Work

:15:52. > :15:58.with the jab, stay at distance and then bring the right hand through.

:15:59. > :16:08.As they broke away, there was a cracking shot on a downward

:16:09. > :16:15.trajectory from Buatsi. Katende felt the pain of the forceful punch to

:16:16. > :16:29.the body. Right hand to the head this time. He is picking that shot

:16:30. > :16:38.very effectively to Katende. Buatsi has already experienced standing on

:16:39. > :16:44.top of a medal podium. When he won the Olympic test event at the back

:16:45. > :16:49.end of last year here in Rio. Victory in the final over his

:16:50. > :16:59.familiar rival, Peter Mullan burg. It was the Dutch soldier who Buatsi

:17:00. > :17:07.prevailed over at the gold medal bout in Turkey to secure his Olympic

:17:08. > :17:13.place here. What is important for Buatsi, when he lands the body shop,

:17:14. > :17:17.don't hold the feet too long. He's soaking it all up, he's looking for

:17:18. > :17:23.the one shot over the top. If you have landed a body shot and you hold

:17:24. > :17:30.your feet, there is a chance Katende could land that shot. Looking at his

:17:31. > :17:39.corner. Running repairs to the right boot laces. I suspect Katende will

:17:40. > :17:42.welcome this respite. Look at the manner in which he is holding his

:17:43. > :17:51.arms over the ropes because he has taken some fearful shots to the body

:17:52. > :17:58.from Buatsi. Buatsi, has the reach. It is a fast left-hand bat Katende

:17:59. > :18:02.possesses. Lovely shot. Has worked well downstairs. Switches the attack

:18:03. > :18:11.and then creates a bit of himself because his opponent comes back.

:18:12. > :18:20.That was such a dominant round, it might be that -- eight. It is.

:18:21. > :18:31.Joshua Buatsi is in a commanding position. That, another one of the

:18:32. > :18:35.vagaries of Olympic boxing. You generally have to put your man on

:18:36. > :18:41.the floor in Olympic boxing. Dominant round such as Buatsi

:18:42. > :18:54.enjoyed during the cause of round number two, enough to score it 10-8

:18:55. > :19:01.in his favour. The man wearing blue, Joshua Buatsi has one foot into the

:19:02. > :19:07.second round now because barring a calamitous third and final round,

:19:08. > :19:11.the 3-point margin that he enjoys from the judges, it should be

:19:12. > :19:17.enough, even if he concedes this final round, to see him progress to

:19:18. > :19:25.round number two of the Olympic tournament. Again, he continues to

:19:26. > :19:31.hit the rib cage of Kennedy Katende. Competing in his second Olympic

:19:32. > :19:33.Games and this has been a painful reintroduction to Olympic

:19:34. > :19:39.competition because Buatsi is hitting him with four Loveridge on

:19:40. > :19:44.his torso with both the left and the right-hand. Katende has been hurt,

:19:45. > :19:50.time and again downstairs. Buatsi, doesn't want to get complacent.

:19:51. > :19:54.Sensible boxing behind his jab. See out the contest. I'm sure that is

:19:55. > :20:00.what the coach will have said in the corner. He would have been happy

:20:01. > :20:04.with him, but at the same time, don't get complacent. Get the job

:20:05. > :20:17.done. Box sensibly now in this round. 26 boxes contesting the

:20:18. > :20:22.heavyweight contest. His body language isn't good. Follow-up

:20:23. > :20:27.right-hand came over and his boxing stance betrayed him and the towel

:20:28. > :20:43.has come in. Buatsi has scored the third stoppage in the boxing

:20:44. > :20:51.tournament at Rio 2016. What an Olympic debut from Great Britain's

:20:52. > :20:58.Joshua Buatsi. He progresses through to the second round. That will be

:20:59. > :21:05.the 11th of August in the morning session.

:21:06. > :21:20.Very impressive. Thank you very much. I am grateful for the win. I

:21:21. > :21:27.am glad he is OK. He is tough, but the aim is to eliminate anyone in

:21:28. > :21:29.front of me. The aim is to get the win, that is what we got, so I am

:21:30. > :21:49.grateful for that. Joshua Buatsi getting off to an

:21:50. > :21:55.absolute flyer. Hold everything because TeamGB's flag bearer has

:21:56. > :21:59.taken to the field. Andy Murray is out on Centre Court straight after

:22:00. > :22:07.the Serena Williams victory in the singles. He is here to retain the

:22:08. > :22:10.title he won in 2012. The two time Wimbledon champion, he said holding

:22:11. > :22:15.that flag in the opening ceremony was the proudest moment in his

:22:16. > :22:21.career. Adding another Olympic gold wouldn't be a bad way to follow it

:22:22. > :22:27.up. We'll keep you across everything centre court here on BBC Four. He is

:22:28. > :22:32.facing Viktor Troicki ski, and he has played beaten before. But Andy

:22:33. > :22:38.Murray opening his Olympic account on centre court. We expect the

:22:39. > :22:42.British contingent in that arena to make some noise. Earlier, you would

:22:43. > :22:53.have seen David Florence, the world number

:22:54. > :23:02.one in the C1. He spoke afterwards to David Pinson. How was your

:23:03. > :23:07.experience on the cause? Really good. Definitely had a few troubles

:23:08. > :23:15.on the way down, as is so often on a Palu slalom run. -- canoe. It looks

:23:16. > :23:19.like it will be enough, obviously there is the second run to come, but

:23:20. > :23:27.I am pleased with the good start. What did your coach say to you from

:23:28. > :23:32.the concrete? He said, spot on. Not a bit tied up around gate number

:23:33. > :23:38.three, but he said it was a good refocus and solid paddling. I did

:23:39. > :23:47.the safe option in the middle where I did a spin manoeuvre. You have got

:23:48. > :23:51.lots of racing this week, how do you make the decision, is it a balancing

:23:52. > :23:58.act whether you do a second run in an early round like this? By me, if

:23:59. > :24:01.I am certain I have done enough to get through, but generally speaking

:24:02. > :24:06.if you do enough to get through, it doesn't matter if you are first

:24:07. > :24:14.14th, the crucial thing is not to be 15th or below. If the first run is

:24:15. > :24:19.good enough, we will save our energy for the next one. How does it feel

:24:20. > :24:24.to be back in Team GB kit? It is very nice. It is a massive honour,

:24:25. > :24:28.particularly in this sport when there is only one athlete

:24:29. > :24:32.representing each nation. It is a brutal getting that spot. The guy

:24:33. > :24:37.from Great Britain who is not here was third at the World Championships

:24:38. > :24:45.last year. For me to be in Rio is incredible and I am happy to be

:24:46. > :24:49.here. Good luck. He barely seems out of breath. Let's talk to Matt Pinson

:24:50. > :24:59.'s. Map you a fantastic way to to set things up to the K1, because we

:25:00. > :25:05.have Joe Clark? Yes, he is at a different stage of his career. He is

:25:06. > :25:10.the veteran of the Team GB paddlers. Joe is upcoming and a medal is an

:25:11. > :25:14.outside possibility the him and with these early rounds, it is a matter

:25:15. > :25:18.of getting down the cause, getting a solid run I'm getting through to the

:25:19. > :25:24.semis and building for the remaining days of the competition. When you

:25:25. > :25:30.are competing, you have a guy who was the more experienced guy in

:25:31. > :25:37.David Lawrence. Have been talking to Joe, making sure he's feeling

:25:38. > :25:41.comfortable. You have spent a lot of your time in Olympic competition

:25:42. > :25:48.alongside Sir Steve Redgrave, how can David galvanise Joe Tomane sure

:25:49. > :25:52.he goes away from Rio having had the best competition possible? They are

:25:53. > :25:58.a very tight group and if you look at some of their social media, they

:25:59. > :26:03.are staying in the same flat in the Olympic Village. Fiona Pennie will

:26:04. > :26:10.be the additional person from the single paddlers. David Hounslow as

:26:11. > :26:18.well who is in the C2 with David Florence. Sorry, Richard Hounslow.

:26:19. > :26:21.They are a very tight group and it is important they interact and they

:26:22. > :26:26.are feeding off one another and energising the group. We are about

:26:27. > :26:44.to see the K1. This is the first heat for the K1.

:26:45. > :26:51.Great news for Britain with David Florence going so well. We have

:26:52. > :26:56.another British representative in this event. Joe Clark is number 15

:26:57. > :27:03.to go. He has another ten minutes or so before he will get to feel the

:27:04. > :27:10.water. Michael Tayler is next the Canada. Pedro da Silva for Brazil

:27:11. > :27:21.and then Mario Leitner. 21 involved in the K1. Two runs, 15 go through.

:27:22. > :27:29.Only six men will be eliminated from these Olympics at the end of today.

:27:30. > :27:36.Taylor trying to make a mark of the start. Digging those blades in.

:27:37. > :27:44.Taken a few hits are ready from the stop us from that tough section

:27:45. > :27:50.which will eat away at your time. Wants to be improving on his 20th

:27:51. > :28:00.position in London 2012. Comes from Calgary. Another host city from the

:28:01. > :28:03.Olympics. People who say the Olympics don't inspire those cities

:28:04. > :28:13.that host them, are very much mistaken. Is that the wind picking

:28:14. > :28:22.up again? Another gate, gate 18, is looking quite hard work for Michael

:28:23. > :28:30.Tayler. Not getting the moment you would want to see. That was nicely

:28:31. > :28:37.done under 20. Three gates to go for Michael Tayler. 24-year-old. If he

:28:38. > :28:43.can go through to the semifinals, but will be an improvement on his

:28:44. > :28:55.performances from boy years ago. The time was set by Kazuki Yazawa. He

:28:56. > :29:01.will have to wait and see how good that is. That puts him down into

:29:02. > :29:07.fifth or fourth place. Fourth place for Michael Tayler at the moment

:29:08. > :29:16.with a Pedro da Silva of Brazil waiting to go at the top. Psyching

:29:17. > :29:20.himself up. He told me it was a four and a half hour drive getting from

:29:21. > :29:26.Sao Paulo to hear. We have come from the centre of Rio and it has taken

:29:27. > :29:36.us two hours every time, so I find it hard to believe. Shaky start. Two

:29:37. > :29:41.second penalty. It must be such a big experience, the crowd was really

:29:42. > :29:47.roaring when he set off from the start line. Really getting into his

:29:48. > :29:52.stride, opening up the blades. We see him steering as he gets the line

:29:53. > :29:59.into this upstream gate. This is the tricky bit where we don't see the

:30:00. > :30:04.stop. Not such a big problem for the kayak paddles because they have a

:30:05. > :30:14.blade on both sides of the boat. 14, he dropped below to feed about under

:30:15. > :30:18.the gate. Drops down into 19, two penalties added for Pedro da Silva.

:30:19. > :30:33.It could be damaging. But the crowd is behind him. They didn't do well

:30:34. > :30:37.in the C1. Round the last upstream, through the final gate for Pedro da

:30:38. > :30:43.Silva of Brazil. Will this be good enough to put him through. It is

:30:44. > :30:48.encouraging, to say the least. We don't know if it will be good enough

:30:49. > :31:00.but it is a massive performance. You can see what it means to him?

:31:01. > :31:08.He went with the flow and picked up the rhythm and let it drive down the

:31:09. > :31:20.course. Look at that excitement. The proud American champion from 2014

:31:21. > :31:24.really enjoying his outing. Next, we have Mario Leitner of Austria. The

:31:25. > :31:30.Austrians have so many good paddlers. Really tough selection. No

:31:31. > :31:37.strings in the semifinal in the World Championships last year in

:31:38. > :31:46.this category. -- no Austrians. He's looking extremely strong. You can

:31:47. > :31:50.see him really picking his straight, looking where he's going, but that

:31:51. > :32:03.was a careless touch, driving straight into the poll. Clipping his

:32:04. > :32:08.bow onto the poll. He escaped through 16 very rapidly indeed. He

:32:09. > :32:16.knows he's got to make up for that two second penalty. 15.48 the split.

:32:17. > :32:25.He is 2.4 outside the Brazilian's time at the moment. The back of the

:32:26. > :32:30.wave, the 21, he is digging deep, this long straight, trying to extend

:32:31. > :32:37.it. He's looking for some solid water a little bit lower down. Just

:32:38. > :32:46.brushed top. It is so area did, you get no pool at all on the blade. He

:32:47. > :32:50.cannot match the Brazilian, 4.8 one. Take away those two penalties and

:32:51. > :32:57.he'd be in second place, but as it is he goes third, for now. Seventh

:32:58. > :33:08.of 21 entries into the men's K-1 category with some big names coming

:33:09. > :33:20.at the back end of the start sheet. Peter Kauzer of Slovenia among those

:33:21. > :33:22.waiting. Now we watch Ohrstrom of Sweden, the first canoeist to

:33:23. > :33:28.represent Sweden at another big games. Always good to get any

:33:29. > :33:34.country on the scene at the Olympic Games. Quite a good responsibility.

:33:35. > :33:39.Nicely upstream towards Gate eight. Looking smooth at the moment. Just

:33:40. > :33:45.over two seconds up on that first split. Can he keep it in control?

:33:46. > :33:49.Got to make sure that there is enough energy in that bottom

:33:50. > :33:54.section. You see people coming in and the power is just gone. You have

:33:55. > :34:00.to utilise every bit of water so that you have the energy that you so

:34:01. > :34:07.badly need after Gate 20. It has been a busy schedule for him. Two

:34:08. > :34:16.penalties for Ohrstrom, but still inside, 0.17. The Norwegians have

:34:17. > :34:20.some of the best rivers in the world, although I know that they are

:34:21. > :34:24.frozen for half the year and they are cold until the end of August,

:34:25. > :34:29.but still, they do have the facilities. It is nice to see

:34:30. > :34:41.Ohrstrom here, he comes from the home of cross-country skiing in

:34:42. > :34:44.Sweden. Very well controlled run, and taking away those two penalties,

:34:45. > :34:51.that would be very impressive indeed. Will it be good enough? I

:34:52. > :34:55.think we will see Ohrstrom out on the water again to try and secure

:34:56. > :35:00.that position. He had the right sort of approach. It was not reckless,

:35:01. > :35:08.but he certainly did not hold back. Mike Dawson is next for New Zealand.

:35:09. > :35:12.He finished 15th in the 2012 games. He works with Campbell Walsh, the

:35:13. > :35:19.British silver medallist from Athens. Campbell has done a good job

:35:20. > :35:29.of looking after the two New Zealand paddlers. He has enjoyed himself,

:35:30. > :35:33.and yes, Campbell is an extremely technical paddler, a very like

:35:34. > :35:40.paddler, so you passed on all his years of experience. Dawson, using

:35:41. > :35:47.his body weight well, the boat speed looks good and the clock shows it,

:35:48. > :35:50.0.51 inside. He had the fastest qualifying time at the World

:35:51. > :35:56.Championships in qualifying last year, and got knocked out in the

:35:57. > :36:06.semifinals with too many penalties. 14, 15, 16, going upstream and

:36:07. > :36:14.looking strong, you conceded blades are driving in and about keeping

:36:15. > :36:19.moving. 0.82 is margin inside, a little bit down on 19 but he gets

:36:20. > :36:24.through 20 without any problem. Again, this is looking very good

:36:25. > :36:30.full stop Michael Dawson of New Zealand, and that fastest time of

:36:31. > :36:33.88.48 is under threat now, on the last upstream, driving back out into

:36:34. > :36:38.the centre of the flow, looking for the fast water down to the finish

:36:39. > :36:42.line, and Michael Dawson, no penalties, but just outside the

:36:43. > :36:49.leading time. That is tremendous performance. The Brazilians are

:36:50. > :36:53.cheering, the New Zealanders are cheering, and Brazil happy that

:36:54. > :36:58.their man stays on top. That is going to be good enough to see him

:36:59. > :37:03.through to the semifinals in three days' time. He will have so much

:37:04. > :37:06.rest. They will have to think what they are going to do with

:37:07. > :37:11.themselves. They are not used to that. Dawson has been doing lots of

:37:12. > :37:19.work with the families in the local favelas here, having seen the level

:37:20. > :37:24.of poverty, and trying to raise money with a cookbook and he has

:37:25. > :37:32.been punting some of that money onto them, which is a nice touch. Now,

:37:33. > :37:41.Meglic from Azerbaijan. He lives in Marie Baugh. Good control at the

:37:42. > :37:46.moment, ducking his head around Gate nine. The agility of these athletes

:37:47. > :37:50.is incredible. They have to be extremely flexible and have an

:37:51. > :37:55.extremely strong core to be able to throw their bodies around at the

:37:56. > :38:00.same time. Lots of these athletes live, breathe and sleep canoeing.

:38:01. > :38:09.This man is a great cost country fan and also he is a keen surfer and the

:38:10. > :38:13.surf down Abriel is sensational. He can't wait for the games to be over

:38:14. > :38:25.so that he can get down and have a go at the beach -- the surf down at

:38:26. > :38:30.Rio. Through gate 20, this is where Michael Dawson looked so good. No

:38:31. > :38:38.real problems for Meglic through that stage. The last of the

:38:39. > :38:50.upstreams 85 seconds, leaves him a long way down on that time from that

:38:51. > :39:04.silver. -- from Da Silva. Da Silva went through that in around 77.

:39:05. > :39:08.The stadium here is sandwiched between the mountain bike course and

:39:09. > :39:14.a DMX course, and five minutes down the road, the hockey and the rugby

:39:15. > :39:24.sevens both taking place at the moment. -- and the BMX course.

:39:25. > :39:32.Perhaps the biggest name in Polish K-1 not making it through. This man

:39:33. > :39:37.finished tenth anyone Championships last year. He did himself no chance

:39:38. > :39:46.-- no harm at all in terms of qualifying. He is an attacking

:39:47. > :39:52.paddler. Very aggressive style, real powerhouse. He is picking his lines

:39:53. > :39:55.very well at the moment. Got a little bit stuck there, maybe I

:39:56. > :40:08.spoke too soon, but he really took control of it. Got to keep that dry

:40:09. > :40:14.line through 15, 16. Very tight turn, eight to second penalty added

:40:15. > :40:20.to his time. Gate 17, I think it might have been. We will try and

:40:21. > :40:28.find out as we move across from 19 through to 20. Not as hard as the

:40:29. > :40:39.transition from 14 through to 15, many of them getting caught there.

:40:40. > :40:44.He is four seconds up and he ducks under the final Gate but picks up

:40:45. > :40:50.more penalties, six and all. It would have been respectable if he

:40:51. > :41:00.had stayed clean, but 18.25 seconds outside. Work to do now, for the

:41:01. > :41:04.Pole. Picked up those last penalties in 23 and 24. Very frustrating if

:41:05. > :41:10.that happens to you as a paddler. That focus has got to stay with you

:41:11. > :41:18.right until the finish line. Still a little bit of movement and that

:41:19. > :41:23.makes it a little bit more difficult to judge your line. You have to

:41:24. > :41:30.judge it more conservatively. Eigel through the first of the upstreams.

:41:31. > :41:34.He messed the World Championship final by one second. He does not

:41:35. > :41:42.want that to happen again. -- he missed. To the upstream Gate,

:41:43. > :41:48.looking very controlled. Doesn't look that fast at the moment, but he

:41:49. > :42:00.has got a good pace. Slightly down on the split, 0.80 one. You see his

:42:01. > :42:09.elbows staying low all the time. Again, just drifting and dragging

:42:10. > :42:17.upstream, strong enough to pull them down to 15, 16, 17, no problem at

:42:18. > :42:29.all, just dropping the stern between 17 and 18, that poor sap those arms.

:42:30. > :42:33.Good turn. Putting in the power there, not what you need at the

:42:34. > :42:37.bottom of the course and taking away precious time that he didn't have.

:42:38. > :42:44.He was already down two seconds prior to that. Within seven, eight

:42:45. > :42:48.seconds, he will have done well on those couple of mistakes at the

:42:49. > :42:54.bottom end of the course and he should save his energy for the

:42:55. > :42:58.second one, because he is 8.24 outside and that is without any

:42:59. > :43:07.penalties. The Russian has two tidy it up if he wants a place in the

:43:08. > :43:16.last 15. It is so competitive. Out by the stopper just above Gate 20,

:43:17. > :43:20.before 21. Now, Michal Smolen, a medallist in the World Championships

:43:21. > :43:25.Abily Valley last year. He moved from Poland to the USA at the age of

:43:26. > :43:30.nine. It was his father, actually, you moved, he went with him and has

:43:31. > :43:34.since picked up US citizenship and he has been amongst the best

:43:35. > :43:39.Americans from the age of 17. Exciting paddler. Needs the control

:43:40. > :43:49.and self and not get too excited by the occasion. -- needs to control

:43:50. > :43:54.himself. When you're on that podium and you know what it feels like, it

:43:55. > :43:58.is of what benefit to you. You know that you want to be there again, and

:43:59. > :44:04.you know that you have got the capability to do it. Swinging out

:44:05. > :44:09.wide between 15 and 16, Nice to put in a couple of extra strokes. Very

:44:10. > :44:16.tight going out of Gate 17. The split from Da Silva coming up, that

:44:17. > :44:23.is very respectable. If he stays clean, he might have a chance, but

:44:24. > :44:28.he was slower or 19 than we saw from the Bill zillion, Da Silva. He gets

:44:29. > :44:34.caught in the big part of the hydraulic down towards 21, 20 two.

:44:35. > :44:40.You can see all of the speed being taken away as he hit the stopper is

:44:41. > :44:45.between 20, 20 one. He will have to work very hard for the last couple

:44:46. > :44:51.of gates. Michal Smolen from the US, what is his performance like? 4.48

:44:52. > :45:07.outside. And that keeps him out of the top three. Using to fifth

:45:08. > :45:11.position for now. -- he is in to fifth position. All 21 Botes gets

:45:12. > :45:19.two runs. And we watch Hannes Aigner, he comes from Augsburg, one

:45:20. > :45:22.of the major venues for Championships and World Cups. He is

:45:23. > :45:26.the bronze medallists from London 2012. He's the only medallist in the

:45:27. > :45:45.K-1 who is here. Finding himself to tight at gate

:45:46. > :45:50.eight. He is attacking this cause, being very aggressive. Not

:45:51. > :45:57.necessarily the smoothest looking of paddlers. He is a question of how

:45:58. > :46:02.much he is using the water rather than just driving straight through

:46:03. > :46:07.it. Didn't have a good experience of the pre-Olympics, finishing last.

:46:08. > :46:11.But got it together at the European Championships, got third position.

:46:12. > :46:20.Took the bronze medal as we watch his time. .69 outside on two second

:46:21. > :46:27.is already added. So the speed is there the Aigner. Challenge to a

:46:28. > :46:41.rolling competition by a ten-year-old. The ten-year-old did

:46:42. > :46:47.25. Aigner managed 26, to save face. 88.40 eight. That keeps the

:46:48. > :46:52.Brazilians happy. That is a good, solid run from Aigner. He may come

:46:53. > :46:56.out again for the second run I get another feel for the water. He needs

:46:57. > :47:01.to eliminate those mistakes in the semifinals if he wants a place in

:47:02. > :47:13.the last ten. Semifinals will go from 15, down to ten. Now, Great

:47:14. > :47:17.Britain's hope, Joseph Clarke. Started his career with Stafford and

:47:18. > :47:24.stone. Comes from Stoke-on-Trent and then moved to Waltham to be closer

:47:25. > :47:29.to the Lee Valley course. What are his prospects, Helen? He has

:47:30. > :47:33.everything to go for. He is an exciting, dynamic paddler, one of

:47:34. > :47:39.the fastest on the circuit. He can do it, it is about keeping control.

:47:40. > :47:43.This K1 man's discipline is tight and they have to push the lines and

:47:44. > :47:50.drive through every single aspect and potentially take risks. So far

:47:51. > :47:55.he is on a great run. Was a second up on the first split. That is

:47:56. > :48:01.something he has to be careful about, did he get his whole head

:48:02. > :48:11.around the pole? I hope so. It is not disastrous, but it is not a good

:48:12. > :48:18.move from Joe Clarke. Looks like he's doing the same as David

:48:19. > :48:21.Florence, go for the timer so you don't have to come out for the

:48:22. > :48:26.second run. But the whole head wasn't under the gate. You have to

:48:27. > :48:30.have the whole head. These days we have video judges and as we speak,

:48:31. > :48:35.in a building at the back of the course, they will be looking at

:48:36. > :48:39.that. They know the British team will also be thinking about

:48:40. > :48:44.protesting and they will be looking at it and identify what happened. He

:48:45. > :48:50.doesn't think it was 50. You cannot allow, here we go... Did he get his

:48:51. > :48:56.whole head? Very tight. As he is moving up as well as turning out.

:48:57. > :49:01.Did he get the whole head under the gate? He feels he did. The judges

:49:02. > :49:07.will have it from every angle and they will have a few good looks

:49:08. > :49:22.that. It is look good Clarke, he needs to come out again. Speed but

:49:23. > :49:29.clean. Jakub Grigar now from Slovakia. He paddles whether high/

:49:30. > :49:36.great. Very slight paddler, he drives, dynamic. Here he goes, in

:49:37. > :49:42.and out of gate eight. Hot on the tail, and then lining it up so he

:49:43. > :49:46.can drive between nine and ten. He is looking good at the moment. When

:49:47. > :49:51.you CV 's guys, on a good run, it looks like there is no white water

:49:52. > :49:57.between the gates, they just dance between the poles, lifting the bout.

:49:58. > :50:08.It is all down to timing when we talk about lifting the canoe. Going

:50:09. > :50:14.into 15. Of the side, perfectly permissible. Still, the Brazilian

:50:15. > :50:18.leading. How exciting is that to see their man leading? I guess he knows

:50:19. > :50:25.the cause is better than anyone else but doesn't have the name of anyone

:50:26. > :50:31.else here. Looking fresh in this part of the course, only one more

:50:32. > :50:41.upstream gate to go. It is all about this power to the finish line. It is

:50:42. > :50:50.going to be close. Just outside. Again, the Brazilian crowd enjoying

:50:51. > :50:56.the fact that Pedro da Silva is still the number one. When they come

:50:57. > :51:02.down in order of the world ranking, Pedro De Silva went sixth. And

:51:03. > :51:07.Grigar went 16. Pedro da Silva is still the number one. But it was a

:51:08. > :51:13.tremendous run. He showed his familiarity with the course, but he

:51:14. > :51:19.still took those risks. He did, he looked silky smooth and glided down

:51:20. > :51:27.the course. He took the excitement from the crowd and put it into his

:51:28. > :51:37.paddle strokes. De Gennaro of Italy, who has replaced the world champion.

:51:38. > :51:39.Congratulations to de Gennaro for being the number one in the

:51:40. > :51:52.qualifying process for the Italian team. Also, and very strong paddler.

:51:53. > :51:59.He very tall, has a long reach. You could see the strain in his face as

:52:00. > :52:03.he wanted to get that power back out of the gate. Drives away, all about

:52:04. > :52:09.the timing. He is one of those men who performs better when it comes to

:52:10. > :52:18.the big occasions. It doesn't come any bigger than this. Down the

:52:19. > :52:24.bottom fall, as it is known. Just slides the boat under the gate. Very

:52:25. > :52:32.precise, de Gennaro, giving himself every chance of being able to relax

:52:33. > :52:40.this afternoon. 88.40 eight. He is going to beat it. He is inside. And

:52:41. > :52:46.we have a new leader. It has taken 11 men to be Pedro De Silva, but at

:52:47. > :52:51.last, de Gennaro has done it and Italy lead ahead of Brazil with New

:52:52. > :52:57.Zealand's Mike Dawson. He will be excited and that is a boost for the

:52:58. > :53:04.British team because Campbell Walsh is involved in his coaching. Superb

:53:05. > :53:10.display of canoe slalom paddling by de Gennaro. For more to go. The

:53:11. > :53:29.favourite for many is on the water now. Jiri Prskavec qualified by

:53:30. > :53:33.100th of a second. And of course he is the world champion, so it would

:53:34. > :53:39.have been a shame for him not to be here. They all seem to have sussed

:53:40. > :53:45.the fast line. Don't cut it too tight, use the flow of water. Then

:53:46. > :53:49.you get the speed in, and then you get the speed out, which takes them

:53:50. > :53:57.into the next move, which is so important. It is important to save

:53:58. > :54:05.on any energy you can for the bottom half of the course. Very tight

:54:06. > :54:10.around 17, did he touch the pole? Two second penalty. Looks like he

:54:11. > :54:19.brushed it with his tin. Better than Joe Clark, who picked up a 50 by not

:54:20. > :54:24.putting his whole head through. Joe Clark has picked up the 50 on his

:54:25. > :54:26.first run in the heat. He will have another chance in just about an

:54:27. > :54:49.hour's time. Jiri Prskavec, take away the two

:54:50. > :54:54.seconds Andy would have just been inside the Italian. I don't think

:54:55. > :54:59.there is any danger he is going out. Three more, Sebastien Combot, Peter

:55:00. > :55:19.Kauzer and Lucien Delfour. The men's K1 first run is coming to

:55:20. > :55:23.an end. Joe Clarke made an impressive debut, we will have to

:55:24. > :55:34.see if it is good enough to qualify for the semifinals, but David

:55:35. > :55:37.Florence is all but through to the semifinals in the C1. We showed you

:55:38. > :55:43.Andy Murray has gone onto Centre Court. I am very disappointed,

:55:44. > :55:48.because we taught him up when you have a whole evening over there, you

:55:49. > :55:51.have the sand, the seat and you have Andy Murray, but do you have an

:55:52. > :55:59.inflatable hands? I don't think you do. I love the way

:56:00. > :56:03.you are hiding your hand. Mine isn't quite the same size. We have a

:56:04. > :56:08.really busy afternoon and evening coming up in Rio. The local time is

:56:09. > :56:14.three p.m.. The locals are out enjoying a Sunday stroll by the sea.

:56:15. > :56:25.But from our control her Paea, we are ready to go through the next

:56:26. > :56:29.seven hours here on BBC Four. Andy Murray likes the Olympics, he won

:56:30. > :56:35.gold in London 2012 and carried the flag at the opening ceremony on

:56:36. > :56:40.Friday night. He made sure to carry the flag in his left hand to keep

:56:41. > :56:47.his right-hand fresh. We will bring you date on Great Britain's progress

:56:48. > :56:57.in the eventing. They took bronze medal in the team event in 2012. In

:56:58. > :57:04.table tennis, the men's singles. We will show you that later. Can Great

:57:05. > :57:08.Britain's men bounce back from yesterday's disappointing loss to

:57:09. > :57:13.the Belgians? We will be live from the Hockey Centre as they take on

:57:14. > :57:17.New Zealand. Later, we will be just down the beach at the volleyball

:57:18. > :57:28.where it is fair to say things will be rocking. Here is a lot at how you

:57:29. > :57:32.can plan your evening with our timetable. Tennis is next to the

:57:33. > :57:36.Andy Murray in action as he begins the defence of his Olympic title

:57:37. > :57:43.against Viktor Troicki ski. We have the eventing to bring you up today

:57:44. > :58:08.on Great Britain's progress in the dressage.

:58:09. > :58:16.Richard Kruse in the fencing is a bit earlier than that. Then you'll

:58:17. > :58:24.have to dig deep before three a.m., Adam Peaty goes for gold in the 100

:58:25. > :58:27.metre breaststroke. Let's show you what is happening around the Olympic

:58:28. > :58:34.venues at the moment. On the Red Button you can follow the women's

:58:35. > :58:37.Road race. We are into the final stages, as things stand. On the

:58:38. > :58:47.website you can follow the action at the dressage at the equestrian

:58:48. > :58:52.centre. And we will bring new action from the artistic gymnastics as

:58:53. > :58:57.well. You can follow those on the website and the women's Road race

:58:58. > :59:07.cycling on the Red Button. You can add 24 hours live stream on the BBC

:59:08. > :59:14.sport website. There is a full event schedule, to see what is on. It is

:59:15. > :59:19.time to head the Olympic Tennis Centre, which is about 30 miles west

:59:20. > :59:22.of where we are to find out what is happening in the tennis. Andy Murray

:59:23. > :59:33.of course back in action to defend the Olympic crown.

:59:34. > :59:45.These are the Brits playing today. Andy Murray has a busy day because

:59:46. > :59:57.he will partner with his brother Jamie later on. They will take on

:59:58. > :00:00.the Brazilians. Troicky, will be a name you remember from Wimbledon

:00:01. > :00:06.because he rivalled John McEnroe with his actions over a decision

:00:07. > :00:08.from the
