:00:50. > :00:55.Good evening and welcome to a round-up of some of what has been
:00:56. > :00:59.going on so far on the second day of the Rio Olympics. We will be heading
:01:00. > :01:02.to live action wherever we can but tonight is the big night because
:01:03. > :01:07.over there in the Aquatic Centre, Adam Peaty is going to be trying to
:01:08. > :01:13.win a gold medal in the pool, the first British man to do so since
:01:14. > :01:17.Adrian Moorhouse in 1988. He goes at 2:53am your time in the 100 metres
:01:18. > :01:25.breaststroke, stay up for it, it's going to be a magic moment. Let's
:01:26. > :01:29.tell you what is coming up tonight. Very soon, we will be rounding up
:01:30. > :01:33.what happened in the women's road race, Team GB's Lizzie Armitstead
:01:34. > :01:42.aiming to get the headlines for the right reasons in this one.
:01:43. > :01:52.We will be showing you Joshua Buatsi, the latest boxing Britain in
:01:53. > :01:56.action in the Rio ring. And we catch up with Britain's
:01:57. > :02:06.formidable tennis team, our flag bearer was in action today, and they
:02:07. > :02:09.are in search of Rio gold again. In foil fencing, we will see how
:02:10. > :02:18.Richard Kruse got on in his bid for glory.
:02:19. > :02:22.And coming into these games, there are high hopes for the British team
:02:23. > :02:29.in gymnastics. They were in qualification action today.
:02:30. > :02:35.And down in the Olympic park, I'm going to be joined by experts like
:02:36. > :02:40.Beth Tweddle and also Leon Taylor, who will be looking at the diving
:02:41. > :02:44.and I'm hoping to meet Adam Peaty's mother and his whole family and they
:02:45. > :02:48.will be talking to me before the end of the programme. Over at Copacabana
:02:49. > :02:53.beach, just relaxing with a little sand and sea behind him, that is
:02:54. > :03:00.where we find Mark Chapman. Thank you very much, Claire. Most
:03:01. > :03:02.nights, this is going to be my base, and the GB medallists that we will
:03:03. > :03:06.hopefully get over the coming days will come down here for a chat. As
:03:07. > :03:10.you can see, Chris Boardman will be one of my guests this evening, and
:03:11. > :03:14.the beauty of the beach is that whether it is 6am or 10pm, there are
:03:15. > :03:20.people doing sport on the beach, it is a sport mad beach. Just over my
:03:21. > :03:24.shoulder, the Copacabana Ford which is why Chris is here because the
:03:25. > :03:27.women's Road race finished just adjacent to the fought a little
:03:28. > :03:28.earlier and it was watched by Chris, Katherine Downes and Simon
:03:29. > :03:37.Brotherton. Lizzie Armitstead said that either
:03:38. > :03:41.way, she did when. A number of people at home and elsewhere hope
:03:42. > :03:44.she wouldn't. One of her rivals the goals before today's race even said
:03:45. > :03:50.her inclusion on the start line was shameful. It's not fair that she can
:03:51. > :03:54.race and other riders in France cannot. The rules have to be the
:03:55. > :03:57.same for everyone. There's a lot of tension in the peloton amongst the
:03:58. > :04:00.athletes about the three missed tests because these athletes have to
:04:01. > :04:04.be on top of the whereabouts and I just think they feel that Lizzie
:04:05. > :04:08.being in the position she is, at the top of the sport and a role model,
:04:09. > :04:12.that is one responsibility she should have taken. Some have given
:04:13. > :04:17.her the benefit of the doubt. Others not. But that word, doubt, runs
:04:18. > :04:21.through the whole story. Would gold for Lizzie Armitstead forever be
:04:22. > :04:24.tarnished by those three missed tests? I don't think it will be
:04:25. > :04:28.completely hollow for her because there will be a lot of pride in
:04:29. > :04:30.winning the Olympic title amongst her family and friends and herself
:04:31. > :04:36.and knowing how hard she's worked for the title. But there will be a
:04:37. > :04:42.strange feeling around a gold medal won by Lizzie today. But first, 136
:04:43. > :04:45.kilometres to cover, including a time of Vista Chinesa, the descent
:04:46. > :04:51.of which accounted for Geraint Thomas yesterday. -- a descent. It
:04:52. > :04:54.would be surprising to see Lizzie Armitstead have her best race after
:04:55. > :04:57.what she's been through in the last couple of weeks. It has taken so
:04:58. > :04:59.much mental energy and physically, that is so draining as well. You
:05:00. > :05:11.can't hide from that. COMMENTATOR: Lizzie Armitstead on
:05:12. > :05:15.the start line alongside Emma Pooley and Nikki Harris. The defending
:05:16. > :05:22.champion, Marianne Vos, on the front row of the grid as they prepared to
:05:23. > :05:25.lead. With eight, "Go, Lizzie" sign being waved in the background, Great
:05:26. > :05:31.Britain and the other 65 riders in the race leave Coaker the gap --
:05:32. > :05:35.Copacabana behind. Lizzie Armitstead stopping at the side of the road
:05:36. > :05:41.very early for what looks like a quick bite change. Emma Pooley,
:05:42. > :05:44.having a little dig. Armitstead clearly had some god of mechanical
:05:45. > :05:48.but she is making her way back now and clearly, Emma Pooley is unaware.
:05:49. > :05:53.Not an ideal start to the race for Lizzie Armitstead. At the front, the
:05:54. > :05:57.race is well and truly on now. It is really splitting up the field,
:05:58. > :06:01.already, they are not even on the coastal road yet. Armitstead,
:06:02. > :06:08.bouncing between vehicles, getting shelter, moving her way forward.
:06:09. > :06:11.Nikki Harris, getting a ticking off from the team leader, saying, "I
:06:12. > :06:17.could have done with your help, there". We have an attack from one
:06:18. > :06:18.of the Belgian riders, Lotte Kopecky, making the first big move
:06:19. > :06:30.of the day. Why are we only seeing motorbike
:06:31. > :06:33.shots? We are being advised that due to the windy conditions, the
:06:34. > :06:42.helicopters are not flying at the moment. You can see the warning flag
:06:43. > :06:46.being waved, there. This is why. Awful lot of mechanicals on here for
:06:47. > :06:48.the men yesterday. Lotte Kopecky hits the stones and a bottle bounces
:06:49. > :07:00.off. That did not take long, did it? The front of the peloton is really
:07:01. > :07:06.starting to break up. This looks like Ellen van Dijk from the
:07:07. > :07:09.Netherlands at the front. That is a great shot, so clearly the wind has
:07:10. > :07:16.eased enough to let the helicopters get back in the air. Now the fun
:07:17. > :07:20.starts once more. Well, they very much have Lotte Kopecky in their
:07:21. > :07:23.sights now, don't they? And also the peloton, you can see them at the
:07:24. > :07:30.back of the picture, and Armitstead is the second rider with the orange
:07:31. > :07:38.helmet on. The chasing group, closing in. There we go, we now have
:07:39. > :07:42.a group of six, I'm not sure how long it is going to last, though.
:07:43. > :07:45.Lotte Kopecky suddenly looks like she's riding through concrete. The
:07:46. > :07:49.peloton is right on their heels anyway, it will be over in seconds
:07:50. > :07:58.for this group. Suddenly, we are all back together.
:07:59. > :08:12.Lizzie Armitstead, over on the far side, going across your picture.
:08:13. > :08:20.The run-in towards Rio starts here and be run-in towards the circuit of
:08:21. > :08:27.Vista Chinesa. Quite exposed down there, that road. And another attack
:08:28. > :08:33.from Germany, looks like Trixi Worrack, one of the more experienced
:08:34. > :08:36.riders in the women's peloton. And at last they start to work together
:08:37. > :08:39.and they have surprisingly been given some leeway, here. That gives
:08:40. > :08:47.you a better view of the kind of advantage they have got, here. It is
:08:48. > :08:50.pretty significant. The fundamental fact is the peloton have to be
:08:51. > :08:59.riding hard, immediately, if they want to get back into this race.
:09:00. > :09:04.This is the steepest bit of the second section and she is making
:09:05. > :09:07.every bit of it count. I think this is Van der Gugten who is making the
:09:08. > :09:12.attack at the moment. Just starting to ease of a bid for the riders. --
:09:13. > :09:15.anomie vandalism. But their concentration levels will have to
:09:16. > :09:22.stay at 100% when they go over the top of the climate Vista Chinesa. --
:09:23. > :09:26.climb at. Anomie vandalism, the leader from the Netherlands. There's
:09:27. > :09:31.enough of a gap to put a motorbike in so it must be quite significant.
:09:32. > :09:38.Oh, and Aniek Van Koot and is down! It's bad. It is a nasty, nasty crash
:09:39. > :09:40.for anomie Van der Gugten. Well, they are getting close,
:09:41. > :09:46.tantalisingly close but it is still a handful of seconds between them.
:09:47. > :09:50.Here is the leader, Abbott, I wonder what is going through her mind at
:09:51. > :09:57.the moment. It is so close but Mara Abbott I think is going to have the
:09:58. > :10:01.gold medal swiped away. Bordini leads the other -- Elisa Longo
:10:02. > :10:04.Borghini leads the other two up alongside and Emma Johansson has not
:10:05. > :10:10.got the strength at the moment to come past Anna van der Breggen, who
:10:11. > :10:15.takes the gold. Silver for Sweden and Emma Johansson. Longo Borghini
:10:16. > :10:21.take the bronze for Italy and Lizzie Armitstead fifth over the line. I
:10:22. > :10:28.knew what I was capable of and what I had the legs and did as best I
:10:29. > :10:31.could. I'm just knackered! It started after I saw Van Vleuten and
:10:32. > :10:36.I was pretty shocked because I think she crashed hard. We did not see of
:10:37. > :10:49.course. And then I realised I'm the first one in the team so I have DJs.
:10:50. > :10:53.I did it -- have two J. I did it also for her and we knew we had to
:10:54. > :10:55.do it. Mara Abbott good tight head is appointment and this place will
:10:56. > :10:59.Lizzie Armitstead means she's no longer the centre of attention. The
:11:00. > :11:05.cameras on the new Olympic champion, Anna van der Breggen although the of
:11:06. > :11:11.most people are with her team-mate, Annemiek Van Vleuten.
:11:12. > :11:15.They are with her and the idea is to celebrate the show and the sport we
:11:16. > :11:22.have seen over the course of the day but impossible to do to because it
:11:23. > :11:24.was a horrific accident. Yes, we previewed the cause and have a look
:11:25. > :11:27.and I felt the sting the uncomfortable when we looked at the
:11:28. > :11:30.descent. I have to say, it is probably the best Olympic road
:11:31. > :11:33.course I've ever seen, a bit of everything and even the final
:11:34. > :11:37.descent was fantastic, very technical, just a few kilometres to
:11:38. > :11:41.go, it was going to play a part but when there's a gold medal at stake,
:11:42. > :11:43.riders will push to the edge of the envelope and some of them although
:11:44. > :11:51.slightly over. The consequences for doing that should not be... Without
:11:52. > :11:54.being melodramatic, potential death. But the course design, rather, the
:11:55. > :12:00.way that they have managed the route, we had some serious
:12:01. > :12:04.obstacles. It is the side of the road you have the problem with,
:12:05. > :12:09.here. The drop and then the concrete banking. Yes, there were concrete
:12:10. > :12:16.edges and frankly immovable objects, trees. They had not all been masked
:12:17. > :12:24.off. If someone did crash, it was almost certainly going to be
:12:25. > :12:27.serious. The latest we have on Annemiek Van Vleuten is that she has
:12:28. > :12:33.three small fractures in her back and is in intensive care with severe
:12:34. > :12:38.concussion. You could see it in Anna van der Breggen, how she reacted at
:12:39. > :12:42.the end. It has overshadowed her gold medal, what has happened to her
:12:43. > :12:45.compatriot. Yes, I'm sure she is breathing a sigh of relief because
:12:46. > :12:48.it looks like, although it is very serious and she is in intensive care
:12:49. > :12:54.at the moment, we believe, it is going to be OK. But it is more luck
:12:55. > :12:58.than anything else. Yesterday, in the men's race, we saw Vincenzo
:12:59. > :13:01.Nibali break two collarbones and Richie Porte broke his shoulder
:13:02. > :13:06.blade. Anyone who falls off on that descent was having a serious injury
:13:07. > :13:10.because it was the adopt the road, it had not been carefully managed.
:13:11. > :13:14.Weasel crashes with bikes and vehicles in the Tour de France as
:13:15. > :13:18.well. Is it going overboard to suggest that cycling needs to look
:13:19. > :13:22.at safety? Not at all, crashes are part of the sport. Those things are
:13:23. > :13:29.natural hazards and you have, you manage them as best you can. In the
:13:30. > :13:34.Parry rebate, they ride over cobbles and be collarbones are broken. --
:13:35. > :13:38.Paris regrets. But somebody sign of a course, looked at the edge of the
:13:39. > :13:42.road and said that's OK and Frankie, it was wrong. What would you say
:13:43. > :13:45.about Lizzie Armitstead's race? I thought she did very well,
:13:46. > :13:49.everything she could do, got into the right position, her team helped
:13:50. > :13:52.get there, she got to the bottom of the climb and it was physical and
:13:53. > :13:55.you should -- could see she was measuring her effort, thinking she
:13:56. > :13:59.was trying to stay in touch and it is incredible she got back up to
:14:00. > :14:03.fifth place, the best she could have hoped for today. Thank you very
:14:04. > :14:07.much, a sombre mood on Copacabana because of the injury to Annemiek
:14:08. > :14:10.Van Vleuten. Yes, but very good news that
:14:11. > :14:14.hopefully in time she will recover. The big news not in terms of
:14:15. > :14:19.sporting action but in terms of sports news is that the IPCC -- IBC,
:14:20. > :14:22.the International Paralympic Committee, has decided to ban Russia
:14:23. > :14:26.in its entirety from the Paralympics which start in Rio on the 7th of
:14:27. > :14:30.September. The president, Sir Philip Craven was very strong in his views
:14:31. > :14:33.and words, saying, "This is not about athletes cheating the system
:14:34. > :14:37.but the state-run system that is cheating athletes. I believe the
:14:38. > :14:41.Russian government has catastrophically failed the
:14:42. > :14:44.athletes. The medals over morals mentality disgusts me". Russia are
:14:45. > :14:46.completely out of the Paralympics in September. These are the other
:14:47. > :14:55.headlines from the Olympics. Catherine Skinner won the Olympic
:14:56. > :14:58.trap shooting title to leave Australia sitting pretty at the top
:14:59. > :15:08.of the medals table, with three gold medals and counting.
:15:09. > :15:25.wasted no time in getting on the medals table.
:15:26. > :15:39.South Korea's women win gold medals for fun in artery. In archery.
:15:40. > :15:45.Ten months after being placed into an induced coma following a fall and
:15:46. > :15:49.serious brain injury, William Fox-Pitt leads the individual
:15:50. > :15:55.eventing standings after two days of dressage, he and Chilli Morning out
:15:56. > :15:59.in front. He and Team GB are sitting fourth overall. Cross-country to
:16:00. > :16:03.come tomorrow. Great Britain have two men in the
:16:04. > :16:06.third round of the men's singles in table tennis, Liam Pitchford and
:16:07. > :16:12.Paul Drinkhall both celebrated victories today.
:16:13. > :16:16.Now, Great Britain has an exciting gymnastics team here for the women,
:16:17. > :16:21.Claudia Fragapane, Ruby Harrold and Aimee Tinkler and Becky and Ellie
:16:22. > :16:29.Downie. They were on the mats today in terms of qualification.
:16:30. > :16:38.COMMENTATOR: Welcome to the Olympic Arena for the third subdivision of
:16:39. > :16:49.women's gymnastics. The host nation, Brazil, performing, along with Great
:16:50. > :17:04.Britain. Full twisting double back, great routine. Original work from
:17:05. > :17:11.Ruby. Started with a good bar routine, Eilidh. Really powerful
:17:12. > :17:20.gymnast. That was a very solid performance. We have seen her
:17:21. > :17:23.younger sister, Becky Downie. That will be very disappointing for
:17:24. > :17:34.Becky. We have had some good performances before. Up on floor,
:17:35. > :17:44.Ruby Harrold. One of the leaders of the GB team. Very clean into the
:17:45. > :17:51.spin. Great start for Great Britain. That's the way you do it. Lovely hat
:17:52. > :17:56.on these leaks, lovely triple twist. This is a big final tumble, come on
:17:57. > :18:04.Claudia. Double straight somersaults, she made it. What a
:18:05. > :18:08.show. Well done, Claudia Fragapane. My legs just kind of buckled and I
:18:09. > :18:14.did land on my neck and I did hear it crunch a bit. They offered me a
:18:15. > :18:19.wheelchair and I was like, no, get me back on the vault! Aimee Tinkler
:18:20. > :18:36.comes to fault. A solid vault from Tinkler. Ellie
:18:37. > :18:44.Downie is going to vault for the team. Come on, Ellie. Double twist.
:18:45. > :18:52.Might be the best we have seen so far. She is a very special vaulter.
:18:53. > :18:56.Who is to say we can't get an Olympic medal? We did get a couple
:18:57. > :19:01.of mistakes, but the team is what we came here for and hopefully we will
:19:02. > :19:04.make the team final. We will get another opportunity to compete. That
:19:05. > :19:08.is the main thing, just enjoying the Olympics.
:19:09. > :19:11.There is only one woman in the whole of Britain who knows what it is like
:19:12. > :19:15.to win an Olympic medal, that is Beth Tweddle, alongside
:19:16. > :19:22.the team qualified, but it was a dangerous looking day. Yes, it was
:19:23. > :19:26.mixed emotions for the team. Claudia Fragapane had a bit of a four on
:19:27. > :19:30.bars but then the routines went well. Unfortunately, Rebecca Downie
:19:31. > :19:35.caught her heels on the bars that has knocked out of the uneven bars
:19:36. > :19:39.final that we were hoping for. On the beam, they went solid until
:19:40. > :19:45.Fragapane had 14. Rebecca Downie also had a fall. But Ellie and Amy
:19:46. > :19:51.are still in the mix for a beam final. Floor, unfortunately, as you
:19:52. > :19:55.saw, Ellie had a nasty fall, which she had to stop her routine halfway
:19:56. > :20:00.through. But the medical team were with her straightaway. They took her
:20:01. > :20:06.out of the arena and assessed her. You can see, she landed and her legs
:20:07. > :20:09.just buckled. Luckily, she is spatially aware enough to get her
:20:10. > :20:14.head. The coach was with her straightaway, Colin, and we have our
:20:15. > :20:22.own medical team as well. Amazingly, she comes straight back out for the
:20:23. > :20:25.vault! Yes, suddenly, at the end of the warm-up, she appeared at the end
:20:26. > :20:31.of the vault run and did her vault. So the medical team had obviously
:20:32. > :20:36.cleared her to go. And she did a fantastic vault. Will she be sitting
:20:37. > :20:41.in ice bath right now? I am sure she will and the medical team will be
:20:42. > :20:45.assessing her. She has the all-round team final and she still in the mix
:20:46. > :20:51.for that beam final. So we will keep an eye on her. Overall, what would
:20:52. > :20:56.you give them as a score if you were a judge? A mixed day. We got our
:20:57. > :21:02.first chance to see Simone Biles, the star of the show for the USA.
:21:03. > :21:06.What did you make of her? She is normally a league above everyone
:21:07. > :21:11.else, but today she took it a notch higher. The floor routine, she
:21:12. > :21:16.scored 15.7, five tenths higher than anyone else. Then on the vault, she
:21:17. > :21:22.scored a 16, which you just don't see in women's gymnastics. There is
:21:23. > :21:29.literally nothing to deduct from that. I had seen her beam routine
:21:30. > :21:34.before I came here, and she just didn't move. So she has had a great
:21:35. > :21:39.day at the office. Team USA are about ten marks ahead of everyone
:21:40. > :21:47.else. What about the men's? Their team final is tomorrow. Tomorrow
:21:48. > :21:51.night. I believe the boys are starting on the rings and finishing
:21:52. > :21:57.on the pommel. It will be an exciting night of gymnastics. Every
:21:58. > :22:00.routine counts. That will be at 6.30 your time, tomorrow. Thanks for
:22:01. > :22:06.joining us. We turn our attention now to the sport fencing. Do you
:22:07. > :22:10.know anything about it? We had three fences here in action. One of them,
:22:11. > :22:19.Richard Kruse, competing at his fourth Olympics, got himself into
:22:20. > :22:23.medal contention. This is his story. With 22 events on today, there was
:22:24. > :22:27.plenty of action around Rio, especially here in the Carioca Arena
:22:28. > :22:31.2. The man of the moment was the Londoner Richard Kruse, who enjoyed
:22:32. > :22:37.a fantastic afternoon. The four-time Olympian was up against Algerian
:22:38. > :22:44.Hamid Ezzine the first round, coming through with a confident when. That
:22:45. > :22:51.was all Richard Kruse needed. Couldn't do it in 2012, but here he
:22:52. > :22:54.goes through. Next, he faced the Italian. This was a much harder
:22:55. > :23:02.challenge and resulted in a very tight encounter. Kruse eventually
:23:03. > :23:09.prevailed. Richard Kruse is through to the quarterfinals and has seen
:23:10. > :23:14.off a formidable appointment. Next up, a former world number one. This
:23:15. > :23:20.was an edgy contest, but Kruse dug deep and went ahead. Richard Kruse
:23:21. > :23:23.razed to the ground, punches the air. He is an Olympic semifinalist
:23:24. > :23:29.and this could be the greatest of days for him. From a former world
:23:30. > :23:34.number one to the current incumbent. But it was an uphill battle in the
:23:35. > :23:39.semifinal, and after defeat, he went on to compete for the bronze medal.
:23:40. > :23:46.Richard Kruse will have to go through to a very nervous bronze
:23:47. > :23:52.medal match. Between Kruse on the podium, Russia's Timur Safin. Kruse
:23:53. > :23:57.occurred early on, but then came back to lose by just two points. The
:23:58. > :24:02.Russian takes the bronze medal. That was edge of the seat stuff. A
:24:03. > :24:08.fantastic effort, but Britain's wait for a fencing medal goes on.
:24:09. > :24:11.Richard Kruse was very philosophical afterwards, saying, that is my best
:24:12. > :24:15.performance ever at an Olympic Games. It is his fourth Olympics. He
:24:16. > :24:21.is a qualified engineer and also teaches bagpipes once a week to his
:24:22. > :24:26.local Scout group. White, let's head back to Chappers.
:24:27. > :24:32.I don't know how to follow that! As we were watching the fencing, Mark
:24:33. > :24:37.Konta alongside me, who won in Beijing, said, have you ever tried
:24:38. > :24:42.fencing, to which the answer is known, but you have? Yes, we have a
:24:43. > :24:47.members' club in London. There was an exhibition event. Me and Leon
:24:48. > :24:56.Taylor from the diving went head to head and he beat me. Did you connect
:24:57. > :25:00.with him? I did. He cut me as well. Savage! The reason we are talking
:25:01. > :25:04.about fencing is because when we went to the Lagoa today, nothing
:25:05. > :25:08.happened because of the weather. So we were sat in the sun for a few
:25:09. > :25:15.hours, and the wind is causing problems on the lake again. Yeah,
:25:16. > :25:18.this lake is an iconic location. You have Copacabana on one side and
:25:19. > :25:23.Ipanema on the other, and the wind was whipping through the mountains.
:25:24. > :25:29.I have never seen wind like it at a course before. As you said, we had
:25:30. > :25:39.no racing today. In the warm-up this morning, there were crews sinking.
:25:40. > :25:45.Every boat, after the training run, had to come back and empty the water
:25:46. > :25:51.out. I have never seen that before. This was yesterday, when Serbia went
:25:52. > :25:59.in. But that was more of an error as well as the conditions. That was a
:26:00. > :26:03.technical fault. One of them got his or stuck in the water and then he
:26:04. > :26:08.fell in. We have speaking to a lot of Team GB today in the rowing. It
:26:09. > :26:11.is something they deal with and conditions can be variable, so
:26:12. > :26:16.delays are more than commonplace. The problem here at the Olympics is
:26:17. > :26:19.that there is a time frame for them, and now we are in the situation
:26:20. > :26:23.where some rowers might have to go twice in a day, which will take its
:26:24. > :26:28.toll. When you start playing catch-up to get the race is done,
:26:29. > :26:32.that is when it gets worrying. Also, you could normally miss one day. But
:26:33. > :26:36.the weather weather is looking, if this becomes a regular occurrence,
:26:37. > :26:41.as you say, the races will stack up and you could have athletes racing
:26:42. > :26:47.twice a day, which is not ideal. That plays in favour of the British
:26:48. > :26:51.team, though. And there are contingency put interest to make
:26:52. > :26:54.sure we cover our bases. The disadvantage will come for some
:26:55. > :26:58.other crews were some people are doubling up. The New Zealand pair of
:26:59. > :27:02.women who will go up against Glover and stunning are also in the New
:27:03. > :27:07.Zealand eight and they have a busy day tomorrow. That is a first
:27:08. > :27:12.example of a crew doing two events. They are in the women's eight and
:27:13. > :27:16.the women's pair. If they have to keep doing that on alternate days,
:27:17. > :27:21.that will come back and bite them at a crucial point when they are racing
:27:22. > :27:26.for medals. Mark, thank you. Mark has been busy because he has also
:27:27. > :27:30.been to the beach volleyball and watched the Brazilian men earlier.
:27:31. > :27:35.We will show you the Brazilian women later. But now it is time for the
:27:36. > :27:40.boxing. We had three Team GB boxes in action yesterday. They all won,
:27:41. > :27:45.so would Joshua Buatsi follow in their footsteps today? He was taking
:27:46. > :27:52.on Uganda's Kennedy Katende in the light heavyweight round of 32 bouts.
:27:53. > :27:53.We watch it from the second round of the fight with Richie Woodhall and
:27:54. > :28:03.Ronald McIntosh. COMMENTATOR: So to the second round
:28:04. > :28:09.we go. Joshua Buatsi took the opening round across the board. Look
:28:10. > :28:18.at the response that elicits from Kennedy Katende. He will be aware of
:28:19. > :28:23.the fact that he has conceded the opening round. That is a cracking
:28:24. > :28:27.shot! But it has been ruled a slip by the referee. He may have lost his
:28:28. > :28:39.footing, but surely a shot from Buatsi helped him to that prone
:28:40. > :28:46.position on the canvas. Just got to keep that guard nice and high,
:28:47. > :28:49.Buatsi. He also have to keep working with the jab, keep breaking the
:28:50. > :28:56.opponent down and setting up the backhand. You do that with a good,
:28:57. > :29:03.educated jab into the face of your opponent. By working with the jab,
:29:04. > :29:07.you are not getting too close to your opponent, because this fella is
:29:08. > :29:12.dangerous. So work with the jab, stay at a distance and then bring
:29:13. > :29:17.the right hand through. Just as the boxers broke away from the clinch,
:29:18. > :29:21.there was a cracking right hand on a downward trajectory from Buatsi.
:29:22. > :29:25.Good right hand to the body once again. Look at the manner in which
:29:26. > :29:45.Katende wilted into the ropes as he absorbed the shot.
:29:46. > :29:50.Buatsi has already experienced standing on top of a medal podium.
:29:51. > :29:56.There is a flashing right uppercut which caused Katende to lose his
:29:57. > :29:59.balance. But Buatsi has already stood on top of medal podium in Rio
:30:00. > :30:05.when he won the Olympic test event at the back end of last year here in
:30:06. > :30:16.Rio de Janeiro, with victory over his familiar rival, Peter Mullan
:30:17. > :30:21.Burke. -- he prevailed over Mullenberg at the gold medal bout in
:30:22. > :30:27.Turkey to secure his Olympic berth here.
:30:28. > :30:33.When Buatsi hits the body shot, he does not want to hold it too long
:30:34. > :30:36.because Katende soaked it up and is looking for the one shot over the
:30:37. > :30:40.top and if you've landed a body shot and you hold of it, there's a chance
:30:41. > :30:45.Katende could land a shot. He's got to keep the gap between himself and
:30:46. > :30:53.Katende, looking at his corner now. Some running repairs to the right
:30:54. > :30:57.bootlaces. I suspect Katende will welcome the respite. Look how he is
:30:58. > :31:02.holding his arms over the ropes because he has taken some fearful
:31:03. > :31:07.shots to the body from Buatsi. Buatsi operating behind a low guard,
:31:08. > :31:11.he has the edge in reach so when he is beyond punching range, that is
:31:12. > :31:15.perhaps a safe tactic but it is a fast left hand that Katende
:31:16. > :31:19.possesses. Lovely shot, nice, and again, so he has worked downstairs,
:31:20. > :31:26.switches the attack and creates a bit of space for himself because the
:31:27. > :31:32.opponent comes back. That was such a dominant round, it might be 10-8 and
:31:33. > :31:38.indeed it is, two judges giving it 10-8 in favour of Joshua Buatsi, who
:31:39. > :31:42.is in a commanding position, leading by three points on the scorecards of
:31:43. > :31:46.the first two judges after two completed rounds of boxing and that
:31:47. > :31:51.is another one of the vagaries of amateur Olympic boxing, unlike in
:31:52. > :31:54.the professional code, to get a 10-8 round, you have to Bertram Allen the
:31:55. > :31:59.floor but in the Olympic boxing, a dominant round like Buatsi enjoyed
:32:00. > :32:06.in Round 2 is enough to score it 10-8 in his favour. Rather tardy
:32:07. > :32:12.corner work prior to this third and final round. Carried out by the
:32:13. > :32:16.Ugandan corner. But the man wearing blue, Joshua Buatsi, has one foot in
:32:17. > :32:25.the second round now because barring a calamitous third and final stanza,
:32:26. > :32:29.a 3-point margin that he enjoys with the first two judges should be
:32:30. > :32:33.enough, even if he concedes the final round, to see him progress
:32:34. > :32:38.through to Round 2 of the living tournament. Again, he continues to
:32:39. > :32:47.tattooed the rib cage of Kennedy Katende. Competing in his second
:32:48. > :32:49.Olympics. This has been a rather painful reintroduction to Olympic
:32:50. > :32:53.competition because Buatsi is hitting him with full leveraged on
:32:54. > :32:58.both sides of the torso. With both the left and the right hand. He is
:32:59. > :33:03.really struggling now, Katende, he's been hurt time and again downstairs
:33:04. > :33:06.and Joshua Buatsi does not want to get complacent, keep working away,
:33:07. > :33:12.sensible boxing behind the jab, see it out, see the contest through. I'm
:33:13. > :33:15.sure that is what Paul Walmsley will have said in his corner. He would
:33:16. > :33:20.have been happy but at the same time, don't get complacent, get the
:33:21. > :33:24.job done. He is working well, just boxing sensibly in the last round.
:33:25. > :33:29.26 boxes contesting the light heavyweight tournament, as Katende
:33:30. > :33:34.touches down on the canvas for the second time and the man from
:33:35. > :33:37.Uganda's body language is not good. Oh, clubbing right hand and the man
:33:38. > :33:40.is in trouble and a follow-up right hand came over and his stance
:33:41. > :33:46.completely betrayed him, the towel has come in and Joshua Buatsi scores
:33:47. > :33:48.the first stoppage victory of the Olympic boxing tournament at Rio
:33:49. > :34:03.2016. Joshua Buatsi! What an Olympic debut
:34:04. > :34:06.from Great Britain's Joshua Buatsi. He progresses to the second round of
:34:07. > :34:11.the light heavyweight tournament courtesy of a piquillo -- TKO
:34:12. > :34:17.victory in Round 3 in the second round on the 11th of August in the
:34:18. > :34:23.morning session, the tournament's number three seed, the Uzbek,
:34:24. > :34:27.awaits. Talk me through that, that was really impressive. Thank you
:34:28. > :34:31.very much firstly, I want to thank God for the win. I'm really grateful
:34:32. > :34:35.for the win and most importantly, I'm glad my opponent is OK. He's a
:34:36. > :34:38.tough guy but we went in there, and like I said, the aim is to get
:34:39. > :34:42.anyone that is out in front of me, to eliminate them, whether it is by
:34:43. > :34:46.knocking them out, beating them on points, whatever way, the aim is to
:34:47. > :34:54.get the win and that is what we got so I'm grateful for that. Really
:34:55. > :34:57.impressive from Joshua Buatsi, and Steven Donnelly and David joys of
:34:58. > :35:00.Ireland have both progressed to the next round as well. If you look over
:35:01. > :35:05.there in the distance, you might be able to see some glowing lights, one
:35:06. > :35:07.of the hottest tickets in town, the Copacabana Stadium and that is where
:35:08. > :35:12.the beach volleyball is taking place, a real coliseum feel to it
:35:13. > :35:16.and yet one end, that looks out onto the ocean comic open, so it got a
:35:17. > :35:18.great view for the spectators as well and the Brazilian men action
:35:19. > :35:23.this evening and we are going to show you the Brazilian women, they
:35:24. > :35:27.have high hopes for gold in this tournament, this is one of their
:35:28. > :35:30.favourite strokes, this is Larissa Franca Maestrini and Talita Rocha
:35:31. > :36:08.and they took centre stage over there.
:36:09. > :37:05.They're genuinely is no better place will be followed Bill to be staged
:37:06. > :37:08.by Kurbatov on a beach. You can't beat it. Leon Taylor has joined me
:37:09. > :37:12.to talk about diving because today we have the three metres
:37:13. > :37:15.synchronised diving and we had British representation with Rebecca
:37:16. > :37:20.Gallantree and Alicia Blagg. How did they get on? And agonising six,
:37:21. > :37:24.tough to qualify for the synchronised in the Olympic Games,
:37:25. > :37:26.top eight only, Brazil got a place because they were the hosts 07
:37:27. > :37:29.really competitive teams and they were not good enough today. They
:37:30. > :37:33.will be disappointed because they would have been in the running for
:37:34. > :37:36.an outside medal chance but they were a bit outclassed. Looking at
:37:37. > :37:42.one of their diets, was the timing out? You get marks for execution and
:37:43. > :37:47.synchronisation and it was just a bit off. That particular dive,
:37:48. > :37:50.Alicia had a bit of a knee buckled, as we call it which meant she did
:37:51. > :37:54.not get enough height. Rebecca on the left is finishing the dive much
:37:55. > :37:58.higher, and the judges will be no lies heavily forfeiting the water at
:37:59. > :38:08.different times. -- will penalise heavily. Intent of the winners, no
:38:09. > :38:12.surprise, was it? Width record-breaking stuff, Minxia Wu
:38:13. > :38:15.winning her eighth gold medal, eight World Championship golds and at the
:38:16. > :38:17.grand old age of 30, she is getting towards the end of her career but
:38:18. > :38:25.they were formidable and incredible to watch. What makes Chinese divers
:38:26. > :38:27.so good? The history, the Heritage, the training programme and the
:38:28. > :38:32.conveyor belts just keep coming. They have a system in place that
:38:33. > :38:35.really works. They looked absolutely fabulous, almost flawless and I know
:38:36. > :38:41.you were completely blown away by them. How perfect is it? It's in
:38:42. > :38:46.outboard -- outdoor conditions, windy today, all sorts of things but
:38:47. > :38:48.I must admit, from a performance perspective, the scores were
:38:49. > :38:54.slightly lower than we would expect but look at that, poetry in motion,
:38:55. > :38:56.diving in unison, ripping the entry into the water so the execution
:38:57. > :39:00.marks are through the roof and the synchronisation is near-perfect. It
:39:01. > :39:05.is very difficult for them to compete, the rest of the goal --
:39:06. > :39:08.girls. How will the venue work for Tom Daley and the ten metres
:39:09. > :39:14.synchronised tomorrow with Daniel Goodfellow, 8pm in the UK. Will it
:39:15. > :39:17.suits them? What I will say is that I've been watching Tom and Dan
:39:18. > :39:20.training and they are in fantastic form. They have not been together
:39:21. > :39:24.that long and all that but they have been putting the hard yards in,
:39:25. > :39:28.putting the work in and if they dive anything like they have in training,
:39:29. > :39:34.they will be difficult to beat. Difficult to beat? For the medals. I
:39:35. > :39:37.thought you were predicting a gold medal! No, you have the Chinese
:39:38. > :39:42.pair, they are not bullet-proof but they are the ones who are the
:39:43. > :39:45.reigning champions from all the World Series. Then the Olympic
:39:46. > :39:50.champion in there as well, in a partnership and then the Russians
:39:51. > :39:52.and it's going to be tough. But fingers crossed for a medal, 8pm
:39:53. > :40:01.tomorrow, Tom Daley. Mark? Leon was talking about the diving
:40:02. > :40:04.being affected by the wind and we spoke about the rowing being
:40:05. > :40:08.affected and the tennis, some of the play on the outside court suspended
:40:09. > :40:12.as well because of wind. In the main arena, the court is shielded by the
:40:13. > :40:16.stands, 17,000 arena so it is very well protected. When all the big
:40:17. > :41:15.stars eventually got on court, this is who progressed.
:41:16. > :41:20.A good day for Johanna Konta and Andy Murray and so far in the first
:41:21. > :41:23.couple of days, the women's rugby sevens squad have been one of the
:41:24. > :41:26.stars of the tournament as far as we're concerned. They top their
:41:27. > :41:29.group and they were unbeaten and it got them a quarterfinal against Fiji
:41:30. > :41:36.that was watched by Eddie Butler and Sir Clive Woodward.
:41:37. > :41:44.COMMENTATOR: Thank you, Clare Connor Emily Scarratt chases Katy McLean's
:41:45. > :41:45.kick and it is a monster, amazing start for Great Britain, Abbie Brown
:41:46. > :42:01.goes over. Katy McLean, the change of tactics.
:42:02. > :42:06.And Joanne Whatmore with great pace, getting the pick-up, gets the
:42:07. > :42:13.support. Brilliant bend by Alice Richardson. Having been set back on
:42:14. > :42:19.their heels by the Fijian try, Great Britain strike back.
:42:20. > :42:28.It has gone very scrappy. A chance for Great Britain to end the first
:42:29. > :42:34.half with a third school. It could be for Watmore and it is indeed. --
:42:35. > :42:38.a third score. A real bonus at the end of the first half and it is
:42:39. > :42:44.looking very good for Great Britain, a third try, 19-7 with the
:42:45. > :42:51.conversion to come. Katy McLean, brilliant positioning
:42:52. > :42:59.by Abbie Brown and that could be the try that sense Great Britain into
:43:00. > :43:02.the semifinals, into the last four. Very, very good so far. These are
:43:03. > :43:06.the quarterfinal results with wins for Australia and Canada and New
:43:07. > :43:11.Zealand, along with Great Britain and that means the semifinal line-up
:43:12. > :43:17.is as follows, Australia, the top seed, taking on Canada at 6:30pm,
:43:18. > :43:23.and then Great Britain taking on New Zealand in the other semifinal.
:43:24. > :43:31.Now as far as Britain is concerned, it's all about Adam Peaty in the 100
:43:32. > :43:35.metres breast red. 2:53am, UK time, he goes and I know of at least one
:43:36. > :43:39.woman in the Olympic park who is very excited.
:43:40. > :43:43.Just before we go, let's look at the medals table as it stands, halfway
:43:44. > :43:46.through the second day with lots of swimming action to come tonight and
:43:47. > :43:50.medals on offer but Australia, who did so badly in London, that they
:43:51. > :43:54.had a big enquiry into what was happening with their Olympic sports,
:43:55. > :43:58.are at the top of the table ahead of Italy and China. Great Britain yet
:43:59. > :44:02.to get on it but you suspect, tonight will be the night. It is
:44:03. > :44:04.well worth staying up because we have swimming finals still to come,
:44:05. > :44:09.featuring this man.
