:00:00. > :00:14.Georgina Klug sending that one over the top. Argentina just maintaining
:00:15. > :00:39.that 3-point lead. Easy pickings therefore Barbra. The
:00:40. > :00:44.Argentinians committed themselves for frontcourt and there was a
:00:45. > :00:53.gaping hole to take advantage of. A two point margin. Bestand is filling
:00:54. > :00:58.up. -- the stand is filling up on the hallowed signs of the
:00:59. > :01:04.Copacabana. Confusion thereby Argentina. Neither player really
:01:05. > :01:14.reacting to the ball. A very, very clever serve. Straight through the
:01:15. > :01:22.middle for Barbara. Georgina Klug taking responsibility. Six aces 20
:01:23. > :01:26.has been an effective part of Brazil's game. Another one, too.
:01:27. > :01:32.That is very good serving indeed, just stepping away from the turn up.
:01:33. > :01:37.9-9 in the second set. Hopefully we can get a back view of the service
:01:38. > :01:41.because there was a late dip. Remember, it is the shifting surface
:01:42. > :01:49.that the Turner house to lock themselves in. -- must lock
:01:50. > :01:53.themselves in. Plunging by Georgina Klug. An easy put away. Argentina
:01:54. > :02:01.have taken the lead in the second set. A great run of service, really
:02:02. > :02:04.impressive. That's why they are world champions. They know when they
:02:05. > :02:06.can pick up the game, get the momentum and the run. They continue
:02:07. > :02:29.on them. Another excellent serve. Just having come to grips with the
:02:30. > :02:41.left-handed serve of Barbara. I am hearing some support, I want more,
:02:42. > :02:52.she says. 11-9. Unbelievable run of servers. That was another ace for
:02:53. > :02:55.Brazil. That is a total of nine ACs. That was a crushing blow to the
:02:56. > :02:59.Argentinian pair on the second set. They started positively. They are
:03:00. > :04:09.now trailing 12-9. They have broken the run of Brazil.
:04:10. > :04:12.It was much needed by Argentina. It is now back to two points being the
:04:13. > :04:46.difference. Nice placement. Good control at the
:04:47. > :05:01.front court. Rolling the ball into the open space.
:05:02. > :05:12.Gallay hammers at home to keep Argentina in the contest.
:05:13. > :05:19.That is where if they set is perfect, whether it was, they kill
:05:20. > :05:29.becomes easier. Just in front of, perfect height. Combination of power
:05:30. > :05:33.and control. That did not match of the kill in the previous point.
:05:34. > :05:51.14-11 in the second set. She found the block. Touch of the
:05:52. > :06:28.fingers of Agatha. Disappointment for Argentina. They
:06:29. > :06:34.have battled so hard to get back of the serve. Just rolling that ball
:06:35. > :06:41.into the net. Brazil with the service now at 15-12.
:06:42. > :07:00.Good hit through the court. Klug has a strong swing. Well executed on
:07:01. > :07:04.that occasion. The athleticism to recover from the dig, to get back on
:07:05. > :07:10.her feet, get the body position right. You take it for granted but
:07:11. > :07:19.it is a really physically demanding sport.
:07:20. > :07:28.Argentina had control of the rally but it was taken back by Brazil. It
:07:29. > :07:40.is finished by Agatha -- by Klug at the front court.
:07:41. > :07:54.The legs are working so hard to get ready to the right position.
:07:55. > :08:05.Magnificent block at the front of the court by Gallay. It is now tied
:08:06. > :08:09.up at 15-15. Great work from the pier from Argentina to get back into
:08:10. > :08:21.the second set. They were down by four points. And now it is locked up
:08:22. > :08:27.at 15-15. Nice placement down the line by Barbara.
:08:28. > :08:59.That was a good guy but excellent play, well controlled that the front
:09:00. > :09:07.court by Barbara. They have reversed roles and that was wonderful to
:09:08. > :09:27.watch. Great stretch, great recovery and a great angle in the open court.
:09:28. > :09:43.The Argentinians working very hard to stay with the world champions.
:09:44. > :09:49.They have already had great success in the world tour stage, competing
:09:50. > :09:54.in Saint Petersburg and practice and also in Mexico in the last team-mac
:09:55. > :10:08.years, as well as the World Championship. They had a string of
:10:09. > :10:13.placings in the Grand Prix events. It is all about the home passion for
:10:14. > :10:30.the Brazilian fans. It is a magnificent Beach Volleyball Arena.
:10:31. > :10:36.Great attempt by Agatha to stay in that rally, full stretch, turning
:10:37. > :10:42.around on herself to try and get that ball back. Nice placement.
:10:43. > :10:50.Unable to control the ball in the end. Argentina now have an
:10:51. > :10:59.opportunity at 16-17. They will try to draw level with Brazil. It is a
:11:00. > :11:03.must win the set for Argentina. And again, Brazil with the control, the
:11:04. > :11:12.balance at the front court. Nicely played by Barbara. She used her
:11:13. > :11:36.knuckles to get that ball over. Barbra again at the front court. She
:11:37. > :11:47.is starting to take charge. She is huge weapon. That was just a hammer
:11:48. > :11:55.at the front court. Perfect dig set and then, in the corner. No coming
:11:56. > :11:57.back from that. Brazil are edging so close to victory here, just two
:11:58. > :12:19.points away from taking the match. Great defensive work but the ball
:12:20. > :12:30.just going out at the side of the court. You have to admire the effort
:12:31. > :12:32.from Brazil. How they keep the ball off the sand at times, it is amazing
:12:33. > :12:44.what to see. It has found the court, it had a
:12:45. > :12:58.spot on the line. Matchpoint for Brazil. The fans are loving it. You
:12:59. > :13:06.can not get any more accurate than that from Barbara.
:13:07. > :13:21.There it is. A very impressive performance indeed by the world
:13:22. > :13:24.champions. Barbara and Agatha. It is a near capacity crowd at the

:13:54. > :14:13.2-0 victory by the Brazilian player and a very strong in your group.
:14:14. > :14:25.Good start in the Centre from Adam Peaty. Good reaction to the gun.
:14:26. > :14:30.This is a good start from. Also from the former world-record holder from
:14:31. > :14:40.South Africa. Right now, Adam Peaty is streaking ahead. His opponent are
:14:41. > :14:46.live with them. 26.69 as the record, Adam Peaty is 0.8 ahead of it. The
:14:47. > :14:55.van Berg on his shoulder. He is speaking away. This is quite
:14:56. > :15:00.extraordinary. Absolutely phenomenal from Great Britain's Adam Peaty.
:15:01. > :15:03.There's oceans of clear blue water between Adam Peaty and the rest of
:15:04. > :15:11.the world. This is brilliant. Fantastic. Adam Peaty takes over big
:15:12. > :15:19.old for Great Britain. And the wonderful world record. 57.1 three.
:15:20. > :15:26.It gives you chills, watching that incredible moment from last night.
:15:27. > :15:31.Adam Peaty becoming Britain's first gold medallist at Rio 2016. He

:15:38. > :15:42.at the Olympic Games since this guy. Adrian Moorhouse, back in 1988 you
:15:43. > :15:49.were commentating back on that race. How did you reflect? It's a
:15:50. > :15:57.fantastic race. It closes a loophole me. I'd like to have seen somebody
:15:58. > :16:02.win a gold medal since, but to see Adam do that and to be here and be
:16:03. > :16:06.able to talk about it. I calmed my own nerves so I could make some
:16:07. > :16:10.sense on the TV. We were watching the commentary and you guys were
:16:11. > :16:14.visibly excited. As well as a commentator you are a fan and
:16:15. > :16:19.swimming yourself. You've been waiting for 28 years for that. Adam
:16:20. > :16:24.Peaty is a genuine bona fides superstar if anyone was in any
:16:25. > :16:28.doubt. For sure. What Peaty has done, the gap of gold to silver was
:16:29. > :16:32.pretty strong. What is quite impressive is the ability to manage
:16:33. > :16:35.pressure on the day it counts. If he didn't get it right yesterday, he
:16:36. > :16:40.would have another four years to wait. For any champion, that is what
:16:41. > :16:45.tests you. He knew he was good enough. He was 1.5 seconds faster
:16:46. > :16:50.coming in. He beat all the field the day before. All he had to do was
:16:51. > :16:54.deliberate, and did. He talked about it being a seven-year project.
:16:55. > :17:00.Putting so much hard work. I said he's got the best pegs in swimming.

:17:08. > :17:13.This is the best in the world. The whole field have been doing that as
:17:14. > :17:16.well. What he's done has destroyed the whole field who have been
:17:17. > :17:24.working their socks off to get to that place. World records seem to
:17:25. > :17:29.realise these days. How hard is it to cut temps, hundreds of your time?
:17:30. > :17:33.You seem to do it easily. Earlier in your career is easy because you

:17:38. > :17:41.When you hit the best in the world, you plateau to a point. You have

:18:17. > :18:20.You look quite fresh. Thank you very much, we will look forward to
:18:21. > :18:24.listening to you in the Aquatic Centre early on. Adam Peaty was a

:18:29. > :18:33.rowers Heather Stanning and Helen Glover. World champions, European
:18:34. > :18:38.champions and Olympic champions as well. On BBC One just now they are
:18:39. > :18:43.in the seats down at the Lagoa Stadium. We will see the women's
:18:44. > :18:49.pair in their first action every 2016. -- in the heat. That is taking
:18:50. > :18:54.place on BBC One as we speak. Here on BBC Four, we will head over to
:18:55. > :18:59.the Carioca Arena 2. That is the middle of the three over there. We
:19:00. > :19:02.will check in on the judo. In the last couple of days we've seen
:19:03. > :19:06.Ashley McKenzie and Colin Oates going out of the men's competition.
:19:07. > :19:10.What about the women's? If you remember back to 2012 there was an
:19:11. > :19:17.emotional silver medal for Gemma Gibbons. Unfortunately, she did not
:19:18. > :19:21.make the cut in the 78 kilograms category. That went to Natalie
:19:22. > :19:27.Powell. We won't see her until later. So right now we can
:19:28. > :19:33.concentrate on the 57 category. We have a Commonwealth champion who
:19:34. > :19:37.back in London 2012 with a volunteer at the Excel centre. But she is
:19:38. > :19:41.right here, she's in Rio. She's an Olympian and what a story it would
:19:42. > :19:47.be if she was to go on and win a medal here at the Olympic Games. She
:19:48. > :19:52.is in her first bout at the Carioca Arena too. She is taking on the
:19:53. > :19:55.Austrian. Let's check in on our commentator, our friend, Ollie
:19:56. > :20:04.Williams. COMMENTATOR:. We are ready to go, it
:20:05. > :20:19.is Austria in blue, Great Britain in white. Medals almost every grand
:20:20. > :20:24.slam. Smythe-Davis is a great talent, she really is. And getting
:20:25. > :20:38.better and better by each competition. Can she do it here
:20:39. > :20:41.against Phils knows? -- Filzmoser. She has a different frame but she
:20:42. > :20:46.can fight in the 57 kilograms division and fight very well. 2005
:20:47. > :20:53.is a long time ago. That is the first time but Filzmoser appeared
:20:54. > :20:55.and took a bronze medal in Egypt. Two bronze medals in those eight
:20:56. > :21:03.attempts at World Championship level. She is capable. She had good
:21:04. > :21:07.moves on the ground. She has a set move that she does. Smythe-Davis
:21:08. > :21:13.will have to be careful of that. She walked out of the area and got a she
:21:14. > :21:27.do. She has to be more careful on the edge as well. A big arm to do
:21:28. > :21:32.her attack. She went right the way underneath with a shoulder throw.
:21:33. > :21:40.This is where she's got to be careful. Filzmoser is now into the
:21:41. > :21:48.attack on the ground. Can she get this? This could possibly be very
:21:49. > :22:02.dangerous for her. That has been changed to a yoko. Smythe-Davis just
:22:03. > :22:06.manages to come out. What a counterattack that was. The
:22:07. > :22:15.resistance that came from Filzmoser, and Smythe-Davis able to somehow get
:22:16. > :22:19.on top. That is exactly where she has got to be very careful of this
:22:20. > :22:31.lady. This lady has a couple of set moves and does them very, very well.
:22:32. > :22:37.Ykuo ahead. Willing to be attacked on the ground, but she doesn't want
:22:38. > :22:46.to be attacked. Despite looking spectacular, why did go down to the
:22:47. > :22:55.minus score of the ykuo? -- yuko. The yuko is for any side of the body
:22:56. > :22:57.that hits the ground. The Waza Ari is for any point of the body that
:22:58. > :23:07.hits the ground. But almost gets counted again,
:23:08. > :23:14.Filzmoser. Crashing onto the mat, these two. It's a good fight and a
:23:15. > :23:19.good technical fight. Smythe-Davis just ahead with that yuko, coming up
:23:20. > :23:24.to the last minute. They are really going for it. A bronze medallist in
:23:25. > :23:28.the European Championships this year in Russia, Smythe-Davis. She knows
:23:29. > :23:33.what she's doing out there, and what is she doing right now? She's
:23:34. > :23:37.looking to waste as much time, I think, rather than getting into a
:23:38. > :23:43.hole down. It is the tactics while you're on top. Obviously, try and
:23:44. > :23:46.waste as much time as you can. If you've got a good hold or move on
:23:47. > :23:59.the ground, then you go for it specifically. Filzmoser won't give
:24:00. > :24:04.up, she will keep coming forwards. There was a virus in March it
:24:05. > :24:19.affected her training time. Freshly got enough to get through the last
:24:20. > :24:25.30 seconds? -- has she got? Two good scores, I Waza Ari and a Yuko. The
:24:26. > :24:27.Englishwoman doing all she has to do. Giving away experience and
:24:28. > :24:34.height but giving away nothing on the scoreboard. She's got plenty of
:24:35. > :24:39.spirit and gumption. She's not wanting to back away. She wants to
:24:40. > :24:49.continue to go harder. The thing is, there's only a certain position in
:24:50. > :24:52.which Yuko is strong on the ground. I think Yuko will probably retire
:24:53. > :24:57.after this Olympic Games. Smythe-Davis did a really good job
:24:58. > :25:02.here. Technically and tactically, everything was done right. She got
:25:03. > :25:06.two really good scores. She never looked in danger. I have to say,
:25:07. > :25:10.just that one time on the ground a little bit and stayed there a little
:25:11. > :25:20.bit too long. Any other time on the ground it was her initiating the
:25:21. > :25:26.technique. A great change of direction and you could see there
:25:27. > :25:30.that she rolls onto her shoulders. She gets the Waza Ari for it. A
:25:31. > :25:35.lovely change of direction. We've always said that she needs something
:25:36. > :25:48.over the other flank. An excellent bout. It's now official, Great
:25:49. > :25:55.Britain has the win. Smythe-Davis continues on to the round of 16.
:25:56. > :25:59.A great start to her Olympic campaign for Smythe-Davis. She moves
:26:00. > :26:07.on to the next bout where she will take on how the of France. That'll
:26:08. > :26:12.be shown on BBC One very shortly. She is actually a fiancee of Ashley
:26:13. > :26:16.McKenzie of Team GB. If you are watching on BBC Four earlier you
:26:17. > :26:20.would have seen as at the Deodoro and the Equestrian Centre watching
:26:21. > :26:23.William Fox-Pitt in action. Great Britain's five-time Olympian was
:26:24. > :26:27.leading in the individual eventing after the first two days of

:26:51. > :26:57.is obviously disappointing to be up there and mess it up. But I hope he
:26:58. > :27:01.is OK. Life goes on. I hope the girls do well later. So far Team GB
:27:02. > :27:07.you're not doing what we dreamt of. In terms of that particular friends,
:27:08. > :27:11.there is such a compromise in covering the ground quickly. The

:31:58. > :32:01.left uppercut to the middle in close quarters also. This is a great
:32:02. > :32:11.effort from Yafai. He needs to keep it going. He took a lot of
:32:12. > :32:18.encouragement in that first meeting in the world Series boxing.
:32:19. > :32:20.Argilagos almost perpetually on the back foot and that could count
:32:21. > :32:24.against them in the scoring of this round even though he has done some
:32:25. > :32:29.wonderful work in reverse gear. That was good refereeing. Raqqa one is
:32:30. > :32:33.being crafty, he is holding on the inside too much and the referee
:32:34. > :32:47.spotted that. Let us listen in to the blue corner.
:32:48. > :32:56.Luke McCormac is in the crowd. Galal Yafai on the front foot, coming
:32:57. > :33:00.forward all dash. Put his opponent under pressure. The crowd getting
:33:01. > :33:10.behind it. It is a close friend. Let us look. All three judges have
:33:11. > :33:17.favoured the work of the man in red. It is one rounder peas, 19 points
:33:18. > :33:19.apiece. Two point deficit faced by Galal Yafai going into the final
:33:20. > :33:36.round. Great Britain's Galal Yafai needs a
:33:37. > :33:40.big round. He is trailing by two points on the scorecards of two
:33:41. > :33:44.judges. He is aware of that fact in his own mind, if not empirically.
:33:45. > :33:49.That is why he has started aggressively in round three. Good
:33:50. > :33:53.right hand through the middle by Argilagos. It is warming attack by
:33:54. > :33:58.Galal Yafai and an effort to extend his stay in the Olympic tournament.
:33:59. > :34:02.Great effort from Galal Yafai in this round. Listening to his corner.
:34:03. > :34:10.He started quickly again and now see as back pain. He has to raise the
:34:11. > :34:14.tempo and he is doing that. He has to improve his accuracy, for the
:34:15. > :34:23.punches in bunches on the inside. That is better. Try to create space
:34:24. > :34:27.on the inside to work. Argilagos, as well as taking the world title in
:34:28. > :34:32.Joe Hart last year, to be American Continental title as well. He's a
:34:33. > :34:38.former junior champion and that granted him an audience with Fidel
:34:39. > :34:42.Castro back in 2013. He is an established star Andy boxer that the
:34:43. > :34:47.Cubans have high hopes for to continue the tradition of excellence
:34:48. > :34:50.in the boxing ring. Good right hand by Argilagos. He is now engaging
:34:51. > :34:54.with Galal Yafai in the centre of the ring. He is beginning to slow
:34:55. > :35:05.down and is cutting a restated figure, Galal Yafai. We are the
:35:06. > :35:08.halfway point in the final round. Slight change in tactics from the
:35:09. > :35:15.Cuban, he is standing and trading with Galal Yafai. It is a 50-50
:35:16. > :35:20.contest in close contest -- close quarters. Galal Yafai is having
:35:21. > :35:25.success moving off the Deeside and trying different angles. He must
:35:26. > :35:30.more on the inside. Argilagos is very clever on the inside. The
:35:31. > :35:35.referee should be stronger. He is holding a lot on the inside,
:35:36. > :35:42.Argilagos. Good right uppercut from Galal Yafai in that exchange. Galal
:35:43. > :35:46.Yafai has to take the opportunity to work away and put this man under
:35:47. > :35:50.significant and sustained pressure. The traffic exchanges in the centre
:35:51. > :36:04.of the ring. The trigger on your feet. -- the crowd are on their
:36:05. > :36:10.feet. He is tying up his man in close quarters on the blindside of
:36:11. > :36:21.the referee. It is a real art to box on the inside. You have to find room
:36:22. > :36:24.to work. He has been dragged in. Cannot find that space. Great effort
:36:25. > :36:31.from Galal Yafai against the favourite Cuban. That is the bell to
:36:32. > :36:36.conclude this second round bout in the 49th kilogram light flyweight
:36:37. > :36:40.division. Argilagos, the number one seed and the number one ranked boxer
:36:41. > :36:54.in the world, the reigning world champion. On the first two browns.
:36:55. > :36:57.It was split one round apiece. One suspects that the Olympics for Galal
:36:58. > :37:02.Yafai will come to an end. He needed a big round three to come back on
:37:03. > :37:06.terms. He probably has not done enough but it has been a great
:37:07. > :37:11.experience. This may be the hardest fight that Argilagos will have in
:37:12. > :37:15.the tournament. It is a shame it happened in the second round. That
:37:16. > :37:18.warranted a semifinal or a final, two of the best boxers in the world
:37:19. > :37:25.at this weight. We are watching them now. That is the luck of the draw in
:37:26. > :37:31.the Olympic tournament. 23 boxers contesting this light flyweight
:37:32. > :37:37.division. Boxers could box as many as five times until the 14th of
:37:38. > :37:43.August. One of the changes since London 2012, the final but taking
:37:44. > :37:48.place over the course of the final weekend. Let us get the announcement
:37:49. > :37:49.at the conclusion of this bout in the 49 kilograms light flyweight
:37:50. > :38:11.division. Argilagos, the number once, the
:38:12. > :38:14.reigning world champion goes through after a hard-fought split decision
:38:15. > :38:22.victory over Birmingham's Galal Yafai. But the result you would've
:38:23. > :38:30.wanted but happy that you did a good account of yourself? I am gutted. I
:38:31. > :38:37.know I am just as good as him. I have lost. It is no good. What do
:38:38. > :38:43.you put it down to? It was a close fight, I thought I had one. I did my
:38:44. > :38:47.best. You felt you had enough? I felt I did enough. I do not know
:38:48. > :38:52.what everyone else thinks. It is boxing. Can you take any positives
:38:53. > :38:56.from this? I know you are disappointed now, just one point in
:38:57. > :39:05.it by the looks of it? No positives for me. I lost. We do you go from
:39:06. > :39:10.here? Just have a rest and support the rest of the boys. I want to
:39:11. > :39:17.thank everyone back home for supporting us. It has been great.
:39:18. > :39:24.All the best, take care. He seems to be disappointed, Galal Yafai. The
:39:25. > :39:28.commentators were impressed with the standard of boxing but that will be
:39:29. > :39:33.no consolation to junk Galal Yafai, he has to put it down to experience.
:39:34. > :39:36.Argilagos is a superstar in Cuba and is the favourite to become the
:39:37. > :39:43.Olympic champion. We going to show you some canoe slalom. We promised
:39:44. > :39:55.you it. Great Britain have a medal hope, not least in David Florence
:39:56. > :39:59.who had a fantastic run in the C-1. He is going in the C-2 with his
:40:00. > :40:07.partner today. Over to Matthew Pinsent. Good afternoon. Welcome
:40:08. > :40:11.back to the slalom canoe course here at Deodoro. We had a great day
:40:12. > :40:18.yesterday. It was delayed by one hour because of the wind. Then it
:40:19. > :40:23.got underway we saw David Florence MPs, confident and comfortable in
:40:24. > :40:26.the men's C-1 down the scores. There are two qualifying runs a bail ball
:40:27. > :40:37.and he only needed one run to secure his slot. -- available. He will take
:40:38. > :40:43.to the water with his partner Richard Hounslow in the C-2. The
:40:44. > :40:48.British combination of the silver medallists from London 2012 and they
:40:49. > :40:56.desperately want to go one place better here in the Rio. Over to the
:40:57. > :41:05.commentators. It is the first round of qualifying in the men's C-2.
:41:06. > :41:11.COMMENTATOR: Good morning if you have just joined us here in the
:41:12. > :41:16.Deodoro. We're halfway through the start list of the first event of the
:41:17. > :41:22.day. This is the first event of the -- first heat of the C-2. We have 12
:41:23. > :41:27.vessels and 11 will be going through to the semifinals. The fastest run
:41:28. > :41:31.out of two counts. It is a different formula we are familiar with in the
:41:32. > :41:37.World Cup and World Championships. The best team will go last. We have
:41:38. > :41:41.not missed any of the action. Good news as bad as the Brazilians are
:41:42. > :41:46.concerned, they appear had a good time. The Russians are run all sorts
:41:47. > :42:27.of trouble here. They will be thinking that they know
:42:28. > :42:31.they have a second run and want to come out with a stronger
:42:32. > :42:36.performance. Poland next and then it will be the British crew of Richard
:42:37. > :42:38.Hounslow and David Florence. They have had so much success. The silver
:42:39. > :42:58.medallists from London 2012. It is Szczepanski and Pochwala for
:42:59. > :43:03.Poland. We have not seen too much of them this year. Once the team has
:43:04. > :43:07.been selected for the Olympics they disappeared into a black hole for
:43:08. > :43:11.their own training. Everything is focused towards this competition.
:43:12. > :43:15.Absolutely. When there is of course that is brand-new, they want to get
:43:16. > :43:19.to know it. There have been some training camps here. They have been
:43:20. > :43:24.out here, spending time on the water. Time to learn every note and
:43:25. > :43:33.cranny and work out where ever they gain can be made. They are going
:43:34. > :43:38.around the bottom of Gate 14, whether you take the risk to go
:43:39. > :43:42.around it or go under that. And these major championships, the date
:43:43. > :43:46.hates are very strict. Very good what to get through 15 and 16
:43:47. > :43:54.cleanly. Slow on 17 but are wary about the wall that is very close.
:43:55. > :44:00.Now the drop down to the right. Only one more upstream to both for the
:44:01. > :44:03.spear. Pochwala is the man at the back of the boat, doing the
:44:04. > :44:09.stealing, this is his fourth Olympics. He's getting into all
:44:10. > :44:19.sorts of trouble. -- doing the stealing. It'll be interesting to
:44:20. > :44:28.see whether any of them to say to go for a spin on the second run. Last
:44:29. > :44:30.of the upstreams. 104 on the clock already. The fastest time is from
:44:31. > :44:50.the Brazilians. 107.70 one. Lots of work to do for Szczepanski
:44:51. > :44:53.Pochwala. Time to go inside. The Bojangles is facing to the left of
:44:54. > :44:58.where it needs to be. It was facing towards the right way to get 21 is
:44:59. > :45:03.positioned. The moment for Great Britain after the success yesterday.
:45:04. > :45:09.David Florence, they are the heirs, his birthday today, 34 years old.
:45:10. > :45:13.Richard Hounslow is the same age. Looking to continue their run of
:45:14. > :45:20.form. The world champions back in 2013. Did not go that way in deep
:45:21. > :45:25.Creek and produced that big time in the valley but to many penalties put
:45:26. > :45:26.them out of the podium position. They have came here for one colour
:45:27. > :45:36.only. They're looking very controlled at
:45:37. > :45:43.the moment, lining up, just waiting. Richard at the back turning the boat
:45:44. > :45:51.around. They decided to not go for the spin direct line. 1.17 up on the
:45:52. > :45:55.splitter so far, very good. The back man often looks like he's not
:45:56. > :45:59.working as hard, but he is putting in so much effort in each of those
:46:00. > :46:04.turning strokes. Here is the first tricky turning sequence through 14.
:46:05. > :46:09.Watch the power required from 14 to 15. They have to make sure they get
:46:10. > :46:17.across no problem at all. Good boat work again. No problem again, six
:46:18. > :46:22.upstream dates on this course, remember. Looking extremely composed
:46:23. > :46:27.at the moment. Looking for the lines. 4.41 up, a superb run from
:46:28. > :46:31.Richard and David. They are going for the spin as predicted. This
:46:32. > :46:37.saves them any risk in getting across the top and they can drive
:46:38. > :46:41.through 21 and into 22. It'll be interesting to see how many crews
:46:42. > :46:45.have got that move. Those starting later will keep half an eye on
:46:46. > :46:50.what's going on. They'll try and learn as much as they can. One day
:46:51. > :46:54.to go for Florence and Hounslow. This is reminiscent of David
:46:55. > :46:59.Florence's first heat running yesterday in the C1, putting down a
:47:00. > :47:06.mark well inside the next best. 103.27 is the new best time and now
:47:07. > :47:09.they have the option of sitting at the second sheet. Absolutely, this
:47:10. > :47:14.is where they went for the spin move. They spent a lot of time
:47:15. > :47:18.looking at it, taking no risks. I suppose they knew they didn't need
:47:19. > :47:22.to because they executed it so well. I wonder whether the little
:47:23. > :47:29.knowledge from David on the water yesterday was passed on into the C2.
:47:30. > :47:33.It didn't seem to help Casey Eichfeld yesterday for the USA. He
:47:34. > :47:38.has qualified for the semifinals. As we go back to the top, Slovakia.
:47:39. > :47:46.This is a nation absolutely packed with superstars when it comes to
:47:47. > :47:49.slalom canoeing. Ladislav and Peter have qualified for the Slovakian
:47:50. > :47:58.boat. They are cousins, not brothers. Another brilliant crew
:47:59. > :48:00.have not made it, they have kept them out of the limelight. Is
:48:01. > :48:10.anything but is more pressure on these two to perform. Other brothers
:48:11. > :48:14.were dominant for so many years, but they have always got such good depth
:48:15. > :48:21.and breadth behind them. Now it seems to be Skantar's time. They
:48:22. > :48:29.will be wanting to make those marks as they follow in the footsteps of
:48:30. > :48:36.previous successful Slovakian. If you look at their results, one thing
:48:37. > :48:41.that looks out is that they have had success on just about every single
:48:42. > :48:51.World Cup course. They will be under a little bit of pressure. They had
:48:52. > :48:55.to perform what is called a back off down at the 15, 16 dates due to a
:48:56. > :49:03.back line. This is looking like another qualifying run, providing
:49:04. > :49:12.they don't pick up penalties. Crashing through that second wave,
:49:13. > :49:16.taking all the hit. They drive into the last upstream, right under the
:49:17. > :49:24.polls. Lovely teamwork through the final upstream. Another 15 metres to
:49:25. > :49:30.go for the Skantars and I think it's safe to say they are going. Look at
:49:31. > :49:36.that, 2.38 inside Florence and Hounslow. The new fastest time,
:49:37. > :49:42.100.89. Just below 20, they didn't go for the spin as we saw from
:49:43. > :49:46.Florence and Hounslow. Which would you opt for? These are a back right
:49:47. > :49:50.crew which is different to Florence and Hounslow who have a back left.
:49:51. > :50:00.That enabled them to use the power of the reverse stroke from the back
:50:01. > :50:05.to use shift in the bowels round. -- shift the bows round. Certainly
:50:06. > :50:08.yesterday, commentating on the C1, the back right thing to have an
:50:09. > :50:15.advantage on the lower part of the course on day 20. And on 15 and 16
:50:16. > :50:18.as well. Now is Franz Anton and Jan Benzien, the world champions. Things
:50:19. > :50:25.didn't go quite so well at the Europeans. They always look a very
:50:26. > :50:35.dynamic crew. Generally a very quick pace. Sharp. You see them working
:50:36. > :50:39.very well together. Like the Skantars, they've been through some
:50:40. > :50:47.pretty stiff qualifying. The Germans qualifying over a nine-day period.
:50:48. > :50:52.But also including gaining points from the World Championships. 0.61
:50:53. > :51:06.inside of the first split for Anton and Benzien. They will expect that.
:51:07. > :51:12.Originally a C1 paddler, he used to be called Bendy Boy because of the
:51:13. > :51:17.way he got his neck around. That would beneficial in the C2. At 34,
:51:18. > :51:22.he's not far off losing that flexibility. We will see what his
:51:23. > :51:27.nickname is after these Olympics. Jan Benzien, his wife is a two-time
:51:28. > :51:31.Olympian and got gold medals at the World Championships that well.
:51:32. > :51:36.Another family with three kids, I'm sure we'll see one of them in this
:51:37. > :51:41.sport before too long. More difficulty between 20 and 21. Once
:51:42. > :51:45.again it is back through. It is just a bigger challenge for them on that
:51:46. > :51:52.last section, but they managed to keep it together. 100.89 is the
:51:53. > :51:56.fastest time so far. It's not really about going into first position,
:51:57. > :52:01.it's posting a time to secure full qualification. We can safely say
:52:02. > :52:14.they will be going through the semifinals. The two Cesar Keanes who
:52:15. > :52:18.won the first to go, -- Sasaki's. Author problems for the Russian crew
:52:19. > :52:30.of Mikhail Kuznetsov and Dmitry Larionov. Looking pretty happy with
:52:31. > :52:36.what they've just achieved. Three to go on the first run. The Slovenians
:52:37. > :52:43.are next. Luca but such and Saso Taljat behind. They were the 2014
:52:44. > :52:52.world champions. They won that title out in Deep Creek. They came fourth
:52:53. > :52:56.last year in Lea Valley. That cost them the silver medal, but they had
:52:57. > :53:02.a good European Championships this year. All in all, a consistent crew.
:53:03. > :53:05.They are looking amazing. They have paced themselves well, trying to
:53:06. > :53:11.feel the water rather than just drive through. Bayard roaring the
:53:12. > :53:19.bow round. -- they are drawing the bow round. 0.36 is the margin.
:53:20. > :53:33.Nothing to worry about at this stage. No crew has been under 100
:53:34. > :53:37.seconds so far. They put that backstroke in. It is a back right
:53:38. > :53:42.crew so they will get a direct line between 15 and 16 which will enable
:53:43. > :53:47.them to drive the boat on. Tight between 17 and 18, but no problems.
:53:48. > :53:51.Negotiated well and a good punch to get them back on the course. Down
:53:52. > :53:55.through the upstream date at 19. They have gone a little bit low. Is
:53:56. > :54:00.that two or three strokes at least to get them back into the flow? They
:54:01. > :54:05.will be struggling to get that topped high. They are having to get
:54:06. > :54:14.below his back upstream to get inside gate 21. 19, 20, 21 is the
:54:15. > :54:19.crux of the course. Certainly a lot of time to be lost on that part of
:54:20. > :54:23.the course. Not many are getting a nice direct line. When Florence and
:54:24. > :54:32.Hounslow decided to do the spin it really did enable them to get a
:54:33. > :54:38.direct line. They were very much in touch at the halfway point. They are
:54:39. > :54:47.in third position. They've gone down into fourth. A clean crew. The first
:54:48. > :54:51.five crews all making mistakes. Since Florence and Hounslow have
:54:52. > :54:58.been down, things have been tidied up somewhat. The front man in the
:54:59. > :55:04.boat often quite get all the hits. They make jokes about the back man
:55:05. > :55:14.not getting his hair wet! Two to go. The Czech Republic are first. It is
:55:15. > :55:18.Jonas Kaspar and Marek Sindler, two world champions from 2014. They
:55:19. > :55:22.haven't taken medals at senior level but they've been consistent and good
:55:23. > :55:27.in the World Cups. They are ranked number two in the world. Expect to
:55:28. > :55:36.see some fireworks. We will have a close look at the splits. There are
:55:37. > :55:41.holding off. This is where they need to find the swirling water. It is a
:55:42. > :55:48.real-world pull in there. One thing I've noticed with this crew, Jonas
:55:49. > :55:54.Kaspar in the front, 82 kilos. Mark Sindler behind him is just 74 kilos.
:55:55. > :56:00.Somewhat front heavy. Not completely unusual, but that is unusual. They
:56:01. > :56:05.can work with the boat design. If you are off balanced, you can move
:56:06. > :56:09.the seat position. Maybe the back man sits further back than he would
:56:10. > :56:13.normally. We have seen this before, they didn't seem to have too much of
:56:14. > :56:21.a problem. The Skantars managed to take the lead. Using the water flow
:56:22. > :56:26.to drive the boat. The point is you have your boat facing one direction.
:56:27. > :56:30.If you wanted to be facing the same direction, you sometimes use what is
:56:31. > :56:35.called the back off. It is where the first person goes for the same spin.
:56:36. > :56:43.Can they get the line across the clock? A straight drive into 21. --
:56:44. > :56:46.across the top. Safer, but not faster after what we saw from the
:56:47. > :56:50.Skantar cousins. So much depending on whether you are back right back
:56:51. > :56:57.left. I think they'll be a lot of learning done. I guess all the
:56:58. > :57:04.coaches will be having a few looks in between the heat to get them
:57:05. > :57:08.crews ready again. Cass bar and Sindler are safely down. They have
:57:09. > :57:14.gone into fit position. -- Jonas Kaspar and Marek Sindler are into
:57:15. > :57:20.fit position. They look safe but so far outside the 120 mark. What we
:57:21. > :57:24.have to remember is we are only losing one boat through the streets
:57:25. > :57:27.today. Although they want to put down their best performance, it is
:57:28. > :57:31.all about making sure you're in a safe spot. You don't want to be in
:57:32. > :57:41.the position where if somebody goes above you you are out. And the final
:57:42. > :57:48.vote for the first heat of the C2, Gauthier Klauss and Matthew Peche.
:57:49. > :57:53.Competing for Frank, they were the number one ranked team in the World
:57:54. > :58:01.Cup last year. Finished fourth in the Olympic Games in Lea Valley back
:58:02. > :58:05.in 2012. Another good run in Lea Valley for the World Championships.
:58:06. > :58:12.Took the bronze medal there. These two have been friends since they
:58:13. > :58:16.were very, very small. There just waiting. A two second penalty. Got
:58:17. > :58:20.tight and lost space. Didn't have enough room to drive forward when
:58:21. > :58:27.needed. That is where the penalty came from. Certainly a good power to
:58:28. > :58:32.weight ratio averaging at 70 kilos. Unlike the crew before, the heavy
:58:33. > :58:39.man is in the back of this boat, that is Matthieu Peche. Some kilos
:58:40. > :58:42.heavier than Klauss in the front. When you watch in paddling, you'll
:58:43. > :58:46.often see he leaves the blade in the water because when there's a blade
:58:47. > :58:55.in the water, certainly in a tricky move, as you see the back man
:58:56. > :59:01.steering. Nicely through gate 19. What are they going to do here? A
:59:02. > :59:07.back right crew. They drive straight through that hole. Well executed.
:59:08. > :59:13.Down to 22 before they line up and get to the final upstream of the
:59:14. > :59:17.course. Ten seconds to go before the fastest time recorded by the Skantar
:59:18. > :59:21.cousins will come and go. I don't think they're quite going to match
:59:22. > :59:25.that, but it's another good run from Gauthier Klauss and Matthieu Peche.
:59:26. > :59:29.They may feel they need another run just to get used to the water he
:59:30. > :59:38.read Deodoro. No real excitement, the British pairing of Florence and
:59:39. > :59:45.Hounslow, the second-fastest climb. 103.27. Then Gauthier Klauss and
:59:46. > :59:49.Matthieu Peche in third place. No big surprises from Deodoro so far. I
:59:50. > :59:58.believe that Florence and Hounslow are on hand.
:59:59. > :00:00.Absolutely, here they are. Second placed provisionally. It is
:00:01. > :00:06.fascinating watching the runners come down. There are some tricky
:00:07. > :00:10.move out there, particularly the bottom section. That's definitely
:00:11. > :00:14.one that was testing all the crews today. We took on what we thought
:00:15. > :00:19.was a safe way of going about it. The aim is to get through to the
:00:20. > :00:26.next round and that is it. Richard, is that job done for the day? I hope
:00:27. > :00:32.so. To be honest, we will wait around. We'll watch the first few
:00:33. > :00:38.boats out and see what happens. If one person doesn't go ahead of us
:00:39. > :00:42.than we totally fine. Hopefully we can rest up. David has the C1
:00:43. > :00:48.tomorrow so we want him fresh for that. We will keep going on. That is
:00:49. > :00:53.my next question. This is building up as usual for you. Is this a
:00:54. > :00:57.factor for you all this week? I don't think it is a problem, we do a
:00:58. > :01:05.lot more training than this normally. We should be all right
:01:06. > :01:08.today for only one run in the C2. We will save energy for the runs
:01:09. > :01:13.further on in the competition. I'm feeling good fresh. Richard,
:01:14. > :01:19.finally, what is it like to put on the Team GB kit for 2016? Whenever
:01:20. > :01:23.you put on the Team GB kit it's fantastic. My first games, the home
:01:24. > :01:28.games, that's special. To come out here, so far way from home, you walk
:01:29. > :01:32.around the village. The other people in the kids seem like part of your
:01:33. > :01:38.family. You say hello if you don't know them. It's special. Well done,
:01:39. > :01:48.good luck and we will be here for the remainder of the competition.
:01:49. > :01:54.Thank you very much. Their quest for the first ever Olympic gold is
:01:55. > :02:00.looking good. We will leave you -- leave the water at Deodoro and go to
:02:01. > :02:03.the table tennis. The poster boy is inaction, Paul Drinkhall, the
:02:04. > :02:08.Commonwealth champion from 2014 after winning the mixed doubles
:02:09. > :02:12.title alongside his wife, Joanna. For those two, mixed doubles is not
:02:13. > :02:16.an Olympic event and they had to leave his wife behind. He has
:02:17. > :02:21.company with Sam Walker and Liam Pitchford in the men's team. He has
:02:22. > :02:27.never qualified for the singles event in the Olympics but squeezed
:02:28. > :02:30.into the third round after defeating the player from Singapore. Let us
:02:31. > :02:38.bring you up to date -- up to date with a guide to table tennis.
:02:39. > :02:45.Table tennis made its Olympic debut in Seoul in 1988 and has seen China
:02:46. > :02:48.dominate the competition. Lawyers normally have smooth rubber on
:02:49. > :02:53.one-sided of the bat to provide a spin and a rougher suffered on the
:02:54. > :02:57.other side for speed. Players often like to spin the ball during a shot
:02:58. > :03:01.because it alters the trajectory and love its an opponent's options for
:03:02. > :03:05.either tongue. In singles, they serve only has to go from the server
:03:06. > :03:10.side of the court to the opponent. In doubles that must cross from the
:03:11. > :03:14.right-hand court to the ray camcorder the receiver. The players
:03:15. > :03:19.must allow the ball to bounce once the table before returning it. This
:03:20. > :03:23.is a fast and furious port and it requires quick reactions. At the
:03:24. > :03:27.highest level, players have lightning bee flexes. The ball being
:03:28. > :03:35.struck in three times second during a rally. A player must reach 11
:03:36. > :03:39.points to win a game. With a two point lead, if not, they will
:03:40. > :03:43.continue until one player has achieved this. Singles and doubles
:03:44. > :03:49.matches are the best of five games. There are three players in each
:03:50. > :03:54.team. Two singles matches can be played until one team has secured
:03:55. > :03:58.three wins. The format of both the individual and team events is
:03:59. > :04:11.elimination. The loser will take no further part in the competition.
:04:12. > :04:16.COMMENTATOR: Here he is. The only British survivor, Paul Drinkhall. Up
:04:17. > :04:54.against it today they have met four things
:04:55. > :04:59.before and Paul Drinkhall, the British player in blue, has a 3-1
:05:00. > :05:03.head-to-head stranglehold over Andrej Gacina. This bodes well going
:05:04. > :05:09.into this third-round encounter. Vying for a place in the last 16.
:05:10. > :05:23.Liam Pitchford was ousted last night. The 21-year-old taken out by
:05:24. > :05:24.the ninth seed from South Korea. The Korean number one was brilliant and
:05:25. > :05:39.Liam could not contain him. We're turning our attention to the
:05:40. > :05:51.bottom half of the draw for this one. This man is ever dangerous.
:05:52. > :05:55.Since 2007, he has won two medals in Men's Doubles team events in the
:05:56. > :06:06.European Championships. He is dangerous, fundus and strong with
:06:07. > :06:13.it. 182 centimetres tall. It is unusual for table tennis. The Brit
:06:14. > :06:30.is four inches smaller. Andrej Gacina will wassail -- want
:06:31. > :06:35.to muscle Paul Drinkhall away from the table. We can create more angle.
:06:36. > :06:40.For some and two errors. It is a three point game. It is in favour of
:06:41. > :06:55.the Croatian player at the moment. It is the third Olympic Games
:06:56. > :07:03.appearance for Andrej Gacina. Read the fourth round in London last
:07:04. > :07:08.year. For Drinkhall, it is the second showing. He lost in the third
:07:09. > :07:28.round. He took that back cancel early.
:07:29. > :07:30.Drinkhall is the five-time senior national champion. He won the
:07:31. > :07:48.championship 's back in March. Fighting tooth and nail, Paul
:07:49. > :07:55.Drinkhall. Boyd on from the cook -- support from the coach. He is trying
:07:56. > :07:57.to reduce the deficit. It is a race to 11 points, that secures the game
:07:58. > :08:14.and since the best-of-7 games. That was a tricky serve, it was
:08:15. > :08:16.loaded with them. It is all about the variety, trying to change the
:08:17. > :08:31.attack lines. Missing the forehand flick to the
:08:32. > :08:32.delight of Drinkhall. He is being cheered on by Liam Pitchford, Centre
:08:33. > :08:58.of the picture. Despite superb defence from
:08:59. > :09:00.Drinkhall, Andrej Gacina kept his foot to the floor. That was a fundus
:09:01. > :09:22.temple. -- fundus. That was a fast server into the body
:09:23. > :09:27.of the Croatian. The last time they met was four years ago. That was at
:09:28. > :09:31.the European qualification tournament in April prior to the
:09:32. > :09:41.London games. Drinkhall came through 3-0. Andrej Gacina had a victory
:09:42. > :09:46.over him in 2007 in Kuwait. He is trailing 1-3 head-to-head against
:09:47. > :09:55.Drinkhall. He is much improved of late. Drinkhall ranked 58th in the
:09:56. > :09:59.world and Andrej Gacina is 19th. Just about his career high. It has
:10:00. > :10:33.been a terrific last couple of years from the man in blue.
:10:34. > :10:41.He is in touch with the short game, Drinkhall, to no avail in the end.
:10:42. > :10:48.Andrej Gacina races away with the opening game 11-8. Drinkhall with
:10:49. > :11:03.plenty to ponder as he heads back to Alan Cooke to discuss tactics.
:11:04. > :11:10.He is a powerful character, Andrej Gacina. Once he gets on the front
:11:11. > :11:26.foot, he is tough to get away from the table.
:11:27. > :11:32.He is going to have to vary his play, Paul Drinkhall, and mix-up has
:11:33. > :11:43.surfaced. Short and long, fast and slow. With spin, reversed serves as
:11:44. > :11:46.well. Andrej Gacina was more effective bankers serve in the
:11:47. > :11:53.opening game but there's a long way to go. It is the race to four games.
:11:54. > :11:57.Drinkhall still has leeway. That was a tough one, tangling up the body of
:11:58. > :12:10.Paul Drinkhall he was exhibiting some spirited defence. Andrej Gacina
:12:11. > :12:11.gets his way with that opening game. Drinkhall to get us under way in
:12:12. > :12:26.game two. He is powerful and accurate with
:12:27. > :12:28.that return. Such a narrow gap between success and failure in this
:12:29. > :12:43.brilliant game. It has been a cauldron of an
:12:44. > :13:05.atmosphere. If you think this is noisy, there is
:13:06. > :13:08.a Brazilian player, whenever he stepped to the table, it becomes
:13:09. > :13:24.riotous with support as you can imagine. It is a party atmosphere.
:13:25. > :13:53.It is all about controlled explosiveness and great use of the
:13:54. > :14:01.table. This man is very strong, in and out of the corners.
:14:02. > :14:07.Just that little bit better at the moment with a first-rate attack, is
:14:08. > :14:10.Andrej Gacina. It has been problematic for Paul Drinkhall cop
:14:11. > :14:16.-- he chooses to use his towel. They can do so every six points. They are
:14:17. > :14:21.allowed 11 minute time-out per match. It is about choosing the
:14:22. > :14:27.right time to pierce the momentum of the other player. Alan Cooke might
:14:28. > :14:42.decide it. The coach of the player. -- 160 seconds' time out.
:14:43. > :15:04.Another forehand flick just missing. Drinkhall was delighted.
:15:05. > :15:07.Again, the backhand was affected down the line. Andrej Gacina rushed
:15:08. > :15:23.on his forehand side. A table tennis match can change in a
:15:24. > :15:24.heartbeat. It could be a lapse in concentration, a moment of divine
:15:25. > :15:39.inspiration. Look at the accuracy from Gacina,
:15:40. > :15:47.using every square inch of the table and spreading the court so well off
:15:48. > :15:52.at forehand side. Look at that! He bats it up to the space very
:15:53. > :15:56.emphatically. Drinkhall up against a man playing some very commanding
:15:57. > :15:59.ball right now. Bossing the points with effect, here's a strong unit,
:16:00. > :16:17.Gacina. So Drinkhall back on terms in this
:16:18. > :16:20.game. His body language suggests that he's struggling a little bit
:16:21. > :16:27.with the patterns of play of this man. Again, backhand very effective
:16:28. > :16:37.down the line to the short part of the court. A respectful
:16:38. > :16:56.acknowledgement there from Gacina. So for the first time in the match,
:16:57. > :17:11.drink all edges ahead. It's a two point lead. -- Drinkhall edges
:17:12. > :17:22.ahead. He won in the 2014 Spanish Open. The first Englishman in 18
:17:23. > :17:26.years to win a ITTF title. He needs to win an all of that experience him
:17:27. > :17:36.against this tough competitor who is ranked far higher these days.
:17:37. > :17:44.Gacina's coach relishing in that wonderful point from him. He's
:17:45. > :17:47.heading Drinkhall back on the side and Paul is unable to release that
:17:48. > :17:52.thunderous forehands that he likes as often as he likes. Gacina with
:17:53. > :17:54.two says of his own to come, attempting to level up in the second
:17:55. > :18:29.game. -- two serves of his own. Well, he is a blur of the ball. Once
:18:30. > :18:33.Gacina is on the front but it's tough to get away from the table.
:18:34. > :18:38.Drinkhall just rushed for the table for the time being as he draws level
:18:39. > :18:50.again. Unable to consolidate on those small, slender lead. A
:18:51. > :18:59.terrific fast, long server. Writing to the body of Gacina. -- right into
:19:00. > :19:11.the body. A taxi pocket very well, did Drinkhall there. -- attacks the
:19:12. > :19:23.pocket. He went for the same serve that time, alert to it. What a tight
:19:24. > :19:31.second game this is. Paul with his eyes shut. A pre-pointer
:19:32. > :19:35.visualisation, I would imagine. Mental imagery going on there.
:19:36. > :19:43.Running through the point in his mind about how she once it played.
:19:44. > :19:48.-- how he would like it played. It is against steeped in ritual and
:19:49. > :19:53.idiosyncrasies. Of course, very much a go to for these players under
:19:54. > :19:57.pressure. It is their crunch and relaxation, if you will. Drinkhall
:19:58. > :20:01.with a game point here. Trying to level up this match with a game a
:20:02. > :20:22.piece. Gacina looking very composed. That was a brilliant short serve. So
:20:23. > :20:34.tight as well. It's going to be a two point game. Back to deuce we go.
:20:35. > :20:49.His deep, piercing eyes, the Croat. Drinkhall again effective off the
:20:50. > :20:53.backhand. Lots of spin to ensure that it did down obediently onto the
:20:54. > :20:58.table. Left nothing to chance there. But again it's the Croat who's been
:20:59. > :20:59.so affected behind his own serve. Second game point here for
:21:00. > :21:14.Drinkhall. That's a brilliant return from
:21:15. > :21:21.Drinkhall off the forehand side and a roar of approval. He's levelled up
:21:22. > :21:27.here. We are a game a piece in this third round of men's singles
:21:28. > :21:30.encounter. Vying for an opportunity to play Ovtcharov or Tiago Apolonia
:21:31. > :21:49.of Portugal. Men that Paul Drinkhall beat in
:21:50. > :21:58.Ekaterinburg last November. There were a couple of really good scout
:21:59. > :22:02.there last year. Including the third seed, and top seed Dimitrij
:22:03. > :22:13.Ovtcharov. Ranking went ramping up to a career high of 33 in the world.
:22:14. > :22:19.Paul Drinkhall doing so well to turn that game background in his favour.
:22:20. > :22:27.He was right up against it, managed to keep that 2-point lead. Gacina
:22:28. > :22:30.will be haunted from their previous meetings. Drinkhall, as I said at
:22:31. > :22:35.the top of the programme, just leading the head to head showing
:22:36. > :22:44.3-1. That this man very much improved. He's gone screaming up
:22:45. > :22:56.through the rankings. He is seeded 15th here.
:22:57. > :23:09.Gacina to serve at the start of game three. He is a very explosive
:23:10. > :23:31.athlete. He plays for a club in Germany, as
:23:32. > :23:43.so many do. He made his international debut, did the Croat,
:23:44. > :23:54.in 2007. He is just one spot off of his career high of 18 in the world.
:23:55. > :23:58.Doesn't relinquish the pressure, does he? Just ratchet it up to a new
:23:59. > :24:24.level. A fearsome pace. Well played, Paul Drinkhall.
:24:25. > :24:47.Spreading the play nicely. Has to keep Gacina guessing.
:24:48. > :24:58.Well, he's under such time pressure throughout, Paul Drinkhall. He's got
:24:59. > :25:02.to be so focused and dialled in. You can only carry a couple of thoughts
:25:03. > :25:07.with you across this narrow thought bridge. Two excellent performances,
:25:08. > :25:18.Drinkhall will be so aware of that. A fast long serve, Mrs! -- it
:25:19. > :25:19.misses. It is deadlock on the scoreboard. Nothing between these
:25:20. > :25:51.two. Drinkhall muttering to himself. A nice change of direction from
:25:52. > :25:57.Drinkhall. A couple into the back, spiking towards the forehand side.
:25:58. > :26:16.Allowing no rhythm for Gacina. It is 2-point game.
:26:17. > :26:26.So effective behind his own serve, Andrej Gacina. Drinkhall just wants
:26:27. > :26:30.to generate some sort of lead so he can play with a little bit more
:26:31. > :26:38.freedom and imagination. But it's hard against this tenacious
:26:39. > :26:46.competitor. Who just muscled his way through another point! What a bully
:26:47. > :26:52.at the table, that is what he is. Thunderous pace, look at this. It is
:26:53. > :27:04.terrific defence by Paul Drinkhall, but unable to read the last shot.
:27:05. > :27:16.Taken so early, just off the bounce. Dispatched dismissively. Both
:27:17. > :27:21.players are struggling forerunners of points. Gacina's managed to
:27:22. > :27:29.reruns of three points. Paul Drinkhall, a run of three and a run
:27:30. > :27:38.of four indent two. But no more. Drinkhall draws level again.
:27:39. > :27:48.The daddy of one little fellow called Duddy has another on the way
:27:49. > :27:52.in September. His lovely wife, Joanne, is pregnant. Let's hope all
:27:53. > :28:06.goes well. So the chair at the resident ahead
:28:07. > :28:22.by a very slender, solitary point. -- V Surrey resident.
:28:23. > :28:28.It teetered, it bobbled on top of the net. It didn't go the way
:28:29. > :28:35.British runs would have liked. Gacina levels up in this
:28:36. > :28:36.nail-biting, nervy contest. -- British fans. Neither can create
:28:37. > :28:54.much breathing room. I'm pretty sure a time-out has been
:28:55. > :29:00.called here. Thou be a 60 Seconds delay in proceedings. A chance for
:29:01. > :29:13.players to collect their thoughts with coaches respectively. -- there
:29:14. > :29:16.will be a 62nd delay in proceedings. -- 60 second. Alan Cooke is the go
:29:17. > :29:20.to man in the corner of the British man. That is where we are in the
:29:21. > :29:44.scoreboard, just the solitary point between them.
:29:45. > :29:51.Well, it's hard in this hullabaloo of energy and enthusiasm from the
:29:52. > :29:57.crowd to pick up any that tactical advice that's being offered from the
:29:58. > :30:05.coaches. But Paul Drinkhall is only the second English player to win and
:30:06. > :30:09.ITTF title back of the Spanish Open in April. The first Brit in 18
:30:10. > :30:33.years. Liam Pitchford lost last night. Sam
:30:34. > :30:55.Walker, or we will see in the team event in the next few days.
:30:56. > :31:02.In the overrule context of this third-round encounter, this game is
:31:03. > :31:13.critical. For both of the players, psychologically. The Croatian has
:31:14. > :31:17.one more severe opportunity to his lead. Brilliant from Drinkhall,
:31:18. > :31:38.mixing the play well. He is drawing level. Great reaction
:31:39. > :31:44.from him as ever. So positive with his body language. Very good to see.
:31:45. > :31:57.Back on terms, here. Terrific surge. Gacina is disappointed with that
:31:58. > :32:01.return. Alan Cooke is on his feet temporarily. He is delighted and it
:32:02. > :32:12.brings up game point on the server of Drinkhall.
:32:13. > :32:23.That is a terrific reaction. Gacina is deleted, he is 2-1 to the good
:32:24. > :32:45.out here on table one. That is how he wants it to be.
:32:46. > :32:58.That is what we need to see more of. British fans will love that picture.
:32:59. > :33:02.Gacina is up against it now. He came out with a sparkling start but could
:33:03. > :33:10.not sustain it. That is credit to the British player who has managed
:33:11. > :33:21.to keep his attack relatively stifling. Drinkhall is favoured on
:33:22. > :33:25.his own serve, by only one point. It has been very tight. You get the
:33:26. > :33:33.sense that is a lot of table tennis left to be played. He is extended
:33:34. > :33:49.through his backhand beautifully. Just as Gacina Bazzoni forehand.
:33:50. > :33:56.Paul Drinkhall in blue, the British number two. To get us under way in
:33:57. > :34:08.game four. He leads to- one. On table one. Buying for a round of 16
:34:09. > :34:49.place. -- competing for. That was a fat serve but Gacina was wise to it.
:34:50. > :34:57.He has got that ability, that facility to up the ante suddenly. He
:34:58. > :35:00.is a powerful, explosive player. He gets Paul Drinkhall away from the
:35:01. > :35:06.table on the back foot where he does not want to be. Gacina is ever
:35:07. > :35:16.dangerous, from Croatia, a man of Basque experience. Good defence from
:35:17. > :35:18.Drinkhall. He teased out the error from Gacina as he panicked him. He
:35:19. > :35:46.snatched at the last forehand. Prolonged applause from the coach.
:35:47. > :35:52.Almost as if to get in the face of the opponent. That was a brilliant
:35:53. > :35:59.backhand down the line from Drinkhall. He apologised from -- for
:36:00. > :36:03.an earlier net call. It is a two point game. He is keeping the
:36:04. > :36:11.pressure on the 15th seed commendably. Tough to concentrate
:36:12. > :36:19.for the athletes. It has been well-documented very noisy. It is
:36:20. > :36:20.about finding that calm place. Both men fully dieldrin. This is a big
:36:21. > :36:40.game. -- fully concentrating. If you are just joining us,
:36:41. > :36:45.Drinkhall has the better out of the head-to-head games will stop that
:36:46. > :36:59.goes back until 2007. This man is very much improved.
:37:00. > :37:11.Powerful, dangerous athlete. It is normally Drinkhall that ends up
:37:12. > :37:18.backing away from the table. He has to keep take to it to rush his
:37:19. > :37:26.opponent. That was a short, low serve. Will he go for a fast one? He
:37:27. > :37:35.had an epic game last night, did Paul Drinkhall. He came against the
:37:36. > :37:44.26th seed Singaporean. He was a former top ten player and it was
:37:45. > :37:47.4-3, an epic. There are no signs of fatigue so he might have recovered
:37:48. > :37:57.from that. Both been exhibiting their short game. Drinkhall
:37:58. > :38:09.succumbing in the end on that one. Gacina levels up.
:38:10. > :38:18.Gacina has managed four runs of three in all of the games that had
:38:19. > :38:25.been played. Again, Drinkhall 's stop the rot, Holton in his tracks.
:38:26. > :38:27.He said, it is not going to be four. He himself has had a run of four in
:38:28. > :39:16.the scheme. -- in this game. Both players a yearning to get
:39:17. > :39:22.another victory. That will go down as an unforced error from Drinkhall.
:39:23. > :39:26.You will be frustrated with that. He still has another service point to
:39:27. > :40:03.redeem himself to try to tie up the scheme. -- tie up this game.
:40:04. > :40:09.He felt he had the point where he wanted it, Gacina, unable to build
:40:10. > :40:31.off of that spec -- splendid backhand angle.
:40:32. > :40:46.Every point gained being greeted by a guttural roar from Paul Drinkhall.
:40:47. > :40:51.Quick to pounce on that short serve. Two points away from a 3-1 lead,
:40:52. > :41:04.Paul Drinkhall now. Gacina has it all to do in this game. Produces a
:41:05. > :41:07.little bit of magic, doesn't he? Desperate to get over the table and
:41:08. > :41:22.launch that early attack on the point. He will not give any court
:41:23. > :41:29.position. Drinkhall with the last of two serves blessed here. -- left
:41:30. > :41:36.here. Can he consolidate? He has served with good effect throughout.
:41:37. > :41:41.That was brilliant, specs the backhand winner down the line.
:41:42. > :41:45.Engineers two game point opportunities for a 3-1 lead here.
:41:46. > :41:55.Terrific balance with the opposite arm. He extends through that
:41:56. > :41:59.beautifully to his delight. Terrific body language from Drinkhall who is
:42:00. > :42:06.spinning around and looking positive. Looking big and energised.
:42:07. > :42:10.He is on the cusp of 3-1. It is on the Gacina -- it is on the serve of
:42:11. > :42:32.this man. 3-1, it is. Paul Drinkhall with a
:42:33. > :42:38.decent read now. He is one game away from the round of 16. You can see
:42:39. > :42:45.what it meant to him, the reaction having won the game, jumping for
:42:46. > :42:51.joy. As was his coach. We can see it again. Immaculate defence. Asking
:42:52. > :42:56.question after question, Drinkhall. Peppering the ball back onto the
:42:57. > :43:04.table and he gets his reward. Alan Cooke is delighted. He went to the
:43:05. > :43:09.People's Republic of China aged 11 to learn how the nation's players
:43:10. > :43:15.approached the game. It was a life changing expedience for him. It
:43:16. > :43:21.really helped his game, in terms of getting quicker and better, he
:43:22. > :43:27.suggested. He had the Chinese coach for about ten years after that until
:43:28. > :43:35.he was 23 years old. The Chinese team has always had a big influence
:43:36. > :43:41.over him and has helped him develop. He had a couple more points one and
:43:42. > :43:48.his own serve. He was backing that serve up very well. Gacina with the
:43:49. > :43:58.swing and the mess on that one. -- the miss.
:43:59. > :44:05.Can this man find more divine inspiration? He started with his
:44:06. > :44:15.foot to the floor. He was unable to sustain it. This man has changed the
:44:16. > :44:22.attack lines, the lead play. He has altogether it smarted Gacina. Gacina
:44:23. > :44:29.to serve at the start of game five. He is trailing 1-3 in this race to
:44:30. > :44:35.four. Wonderful from Drinkhall. He saw in his peripheral vision Gacina
:44:36. > :45:13.shift to the left and that was all he needed.
:45:14. > :45:21.Gacina looks like he has the edge in firepower, but unable to control it
:45:22. > :45:25.at the moment. All guns blazing but just spilling too many errors.
:45:26. > :45:34.Drinkhall starting to really capitalise on what now.
:45:35. > :45:38.The man in blue has played some cool, calm, measured table tennis
:45:39. > :46:11.this afternoon. Wonderful, loaded with spin. Marked
:46:12. > :46:17.down obediently onto the table. They love it. Pitchford and company in
:46:18. > :46:32.the stands are delighted with that point.
:46:33. > :46:40.Testament to the pressure that he's been put under from Drinkhall. He
:46:41. > :46:53.concedes just a second solitary fault on his own delivery. They call
:46:54. > :47:01.a time-out between them. So a despondent look in the Croatian camp
:47:02. > :47:03.as Andrej Gacina has it all to do. Conversely, these two in the driving
:47:04. > :47:24.seat. Confirmation of the scoreline. Paul
:47:25. > :47:32.Drinkhall just seven points away from the round of 16. Seven points
:47:33. > :47:38.in table tennis is like an eternity. And this man, the man of real
:47:39. > :47:41.talent. You don't get to be 19th in the world without twisting these
:47:42. > :47:51.kind of matches your way. I'm sure we're going to see a lot of tight
:47:52. > :47:56.points. High drama here than on table one. In the Rio Central
:47:57. > :48:06.Pavilion 3. A cracking atmosphere. Drinkhall turning.
:48:07. > :48:15.He's really had to go to the trenches today, Paul Drinkhall. He's
:48:16. > :48:17.been up against this vicious head speed Croat who really can pack a
:48:18. > :48:37.punch. Drinkhall made the third round as he
:48:38. > :48:42.is today in London four years ago. Can he go one further? He lost out
:48:43. > :48:45.to Dimitrij Ovtcharov on that occasion. He may well meet him as
:48:46. > :48:49.the third seed in the round upcoming, should he get past Tiago
:48:50. > :49:25.Apolonia of Portugal, the 14th seed. Thunderous racquet head speed from
:49:26. > :49:30.the back end. The winner of this might actually plays Vladimir
:49:31. > :49:36.Samsonov, should he come through. He 3-2 up against Kristian Karlsson,
:49:37. > :49:44.the left-hander. -- the Swedish left-hander.
:49:45. > :49:52.A brilliant response from Andrej Gacina. Thought there might be a
:49:53. > :50:21.backlash. Drinkhall losing his way a little
:50:22. > :50:25.and this man raising the bar. We take a look now at Paul Drinkhall's
:50:26. > :50:31.frontrunning skills and this man's ability to wriggle out of danger.
:50:32. > :51:07.He's got a 7-point lead and two serves to come.
:51:08. > :51:16.Well, hasn't he been a menace today? When he gets on the front foot off
:51:17. > :51:21.that forehand side in particular, he's been ever dominant. Drinkhall
:51:22. > :51:22.with it all to do now. The Croat is just two points away from snatching
:51:23. > :51:43.this vital fifth game. So from no where it's been a run of
:51:44. > :51:49.five consecutive points for Gacina that he's managed to muster in this
:51:50. > :51:54.game. Five-game point opportunities for the Croat. What a sparkling
:51:55. > :51:59.finish for him. When his back was up against the wall, he came good. He's
:52:00. > :52:01.still very much a float here. Paul Drinkhall with a 3-2 lead, still a
:52:02. > :52:22.solitary game away. Gacina raising the bar. It's a
:52:23. > :52:27.high-risk ploy, but he got on the front foot first. He really took the
:52:28. > :52:39.initiative in the back end up that fifth game.
:52:40. > :52:46.These are pensive moments, trying to rehydrate, take on a little bit of
:52:47. > :52:56.sustenance. Even the coach needs a banana!
:52:57. > :53:05.Can this man, Andrej Gacina, wriggle out of the stranglehold and the
:53:06. > :53:13.headlock that Drinkhall has on him right now? It's a must win game for
:53:14. > :53:21.the man in red and blue. Drinkhall just a game away from closing the
:53:22. > :53:25.match out. He's been to change his shirt, by the looks of things. Just
:53:26. > :53:38.freshen up a little. Respectfully jogging back. Well, it's been never
:53:39. > :53:41.less than gripping, this one. To his credit, Paul Drinkhall, when the
:53:42. > :53:47.chips are down he showed aptitude and application. You imagine now
:53:48. > :53:56.he's going to have to show a lot of industry heroes now -- here as well.
:53:57. > :54:05.The early lead pivotal in this vital six-game. If you are just joining
:54:06. > :54:15.us, it's the player that wins four games that goes through to the round
:54:16. > :54:17.of 16. Drinkhall is 3-2 ahead. Now, how will both men respond to this
:54:18. > :54:51.situation? Oh, he's turned it around! How about
:54:52. > :55:00.that? Point of the match so far. Take a bow, Paul Drinkhall. Gacina
:55:01. > :55:06.has been denied so few times when he's been bullying with that
:55:07. > :55:59.forehand. He'll be disappointed with that one.
:56:00. > :56:09.Again, terrific short, low serve laden with spin from the Croat. Who
:56:10. > :56:15.will blink first in this vital six game? A fast, long service for
:56:16. > :57:22.Drinkhall, but he was denied. The ever alert Andre Gacina is up to it.
:57:23. > :57:40.One more serve for this man. Drinkhall keeping him away from the
:57:41. > :57:45.table with some powerful forehand. A frenzied racquet head speed from the
:57:46. > :57:52.man in blue, loaded with spin. Gacina unable to control the
:57:53. > :58:17.response. Deadlock in this sixth game. A run of 3.4 Paul Drinkhall.
:58:18. > :58:20.-- three points four Paul Drinkhall. Again, Gacina just buckling
:58:21. > :58:30.Drinkhall off-balance away from the table. He plays with such thunderous
:58:31. > :58:44.pace, this man. Several fireworks out here. Look at this, muscling his
:58:45. > :58:51.way through. Straining every sign new -- sinew in defence. To no
:58:52. > :59:06.avail. 5-5. Brilliant, another terrific point from both.
:59:07. > :59:14.The coach from Croatia is wincing in the background. So little between
:59:15. > :59:56.these two as there was last night. Drinkhall with a two point lead and
:59:57. > :00:15.two serves to come. Is he setting sail for the round of 16 here?
:00:16. > :01:41.Unable to contain Andrej Gacina who has been consistently bullying these
:01:42. > :01:51.points but Drinkhall, such clever match IQ, has wrestled the scoreline
:01:52. > :01:53.his way so it is still a 3-point game. Gacina has one more serve to
:01:54. > :02:14.come. Oh! Straining every sinew to get the
:02:15. > :02:19.ball back on the table, Drinkhall. You can't criticise his lack of
:02:20. > :02:27.application, look at this, throwing himself around. In the end, Gacina
:02:28. > :02:36.had the last laugh. Such a compelling watch, this one. Just
:02:37. > :02:48.wanting to clean every bead of sweat or dampness from underfoot, he
:02:49. > :03:16.doesn't want to slide of course. A chance to catch his breath as well.
:03:17. > :03:33.Three match opportunities for Paul Drinkhall to oust the number 15
:03:34. > :03:36.seed. He took at the 26th seed last night, from Singapore, Gao Ning, and
:03:37. > :03:43.here he is on the cusp of another terrific win.
:03:44. > :03:58.Denied temporarily. As we draw breath looking on. Can this man
:03:59. > :04:25.create another two moments of brilliance to draw level?
:04:26. > :04:35.He's done it! Paul Drinkhall, beyond his London 2012 third round showing,
:04:36. > :04:40.he is into the round of 16 for the first time at the Olympics,
:04:41. > :04:45.absolutely delighted. Andrej Gacina played his part, what eight match
:04:46. > :04:51.the 15th seed contested but he was denied in the end by some sterling
:04:52. > :04:56.defensive work from Paul Drinkhall who mixed the play so well. He is
:04:57. > :05:03.delighted, as is his coach, Alan Cooke. Buried big moment in the
:05:04. > :05:09.heady days of British table tennis -- a very big moment. Paul Drinkhall
:05:10. > :05:10.is through to the round of 16 where it will probably be Vladimir
:05:11. > :05:21.Samsonov, the seventh seed. That's how you do it, Paul
:05:22. > :05:25.Drinkhall, that was intense, he was even on the floor at one stage but
:05:26. > :05:31.he came through to win the third match out of three and to progress
:05:32. > :05:40.into the last 16. That is big news for Great Britain on day three. Here
:05:41. > :05:43.are three more stories for you. There has been disappointment in the
:05:44. > :05:47.equestrian for Great Britain, William Fox-Pitt had led the
:05:48. > :05:50.individual eventing after the dressage but ran through on the
:05:51. > :05:56.cross-country course to incur a hefty penalty and drop out of medal
:05:57. > :06:04.contention. It has been a packed programme at the rowing, reigning
:06:05. > :06:07.champions Glover and Stanning were pushed all the way by Denmark but
:06:08. > :06:15.came back to win their heat and extend their unbeaten run to 37
:06:16. > :06:20.races. And 21-year-old Kyle Edmund is alt of the men's singles tennis,
:06:21. > :06:25.a medal would have been a long shot but he will have to deal with an
:06:26. > :06:32.early exit after being eaten by Taro Daniel of Japan -- beaten. The huge
:06:33. > :06:39.Diadora sports complex is going to host a lot of sports during Rio 2016
:06:40. > :06:42.and bid is for rugby sevens. It is a long time since rugby of any
:06:43. > :06:47.description has been in the Olympics so we are here to witness a bit of
:06:48. > :06:49.history. Team GB will be part of that as the women start their
:06:50. > :07:01.competition. And to score the first try of the
:07:02. > :07:05.Olympic history... The first obstacle overcome for the British
:07:06. > :07:10.team. Is is the biggest event your daughter will compete in? That's
:07:11. > :07:14.probably true, she has played in World Cup matches and other sevens
:07:15. > :07:19.event but the Olympics is a level above. It is buzzing. It is great
:07:20. > :07:24.and it has been highlighted the way it is an showcased as it is so it is
:07:25. > :07:29.a fantastic set piece for women's rugby. How nervous if it watching
:07:30. > :07:34.her as a sister? Really nerve wracking but I think my parents find
:07:35. > :07:39.it more difficult, she scored two tries and my mum was sobbing! I was
:07:40. > :07:46.holding my mum and waving the union Jack with the other hand! What is
:07:47. > :07:51.this team capable of? A gold medal, without a shadow of a doubt, we have
:07:52. > :07:55.world-class players in Emily Scarratt and Abigail Brown, Jasmine
:07:56. > :08:03.Joyce from Wales has come from nowhere, she started rugby a year
:08:04. > :08:08.ago. Just quality. This is more than just a British story. For this
:08:09. > :08:13.sport, this competition could take it to a whole new audience. It is
:08:14. > :08:17.such a good move to bring in seven aside because it is so simple to
:08:18. > :08:21.follow, instead of 15 people thumping around a bit it is seven
:08:22. > :08:26.dashing everywhere at the speed of light and the game of rugby will get
:08:27. > :08:31.a huge stage to perform and this will go right around the world. Can
:08:32. > :08:36.you see the Olympics in seven is becoming the must win title, the
:08:37. > :08:41.pre-eminent title? I think it is already there, the World Cup is not
:08:42. > :08:45.as significant in sevens at in 15 aside and it has been moved to
:08:46. > :08:49.accommodate this. I can see the game going from strength to strength on
:08:50. > :08:53.the back of being here at the Olympics. There has been a lot of
:08:54. > :08:59.talk about new sport in Rio. When Kenneth started in 1988, the best
:09:00. > :09:04.players were not there. -- tennis. Golf has not covered itself in glory
:09:05. > :09:09.recently so it is wonderful to see a sport making its debut and hit the
:09:10. > :09:14.ground running. Is it exciting for you? Is it a chance for rugby? The
:09:15. > :09:22.only thing I regret, I'm not young enough or fit enough to have played
:09:23. > :09:27.it! We have had a growing fan base of rugby pheasant -- fan base rugby
:09:28. > :09:32.sevens here and it is finally time for the medals to be decided in the
:09:33. > :09:37.women's competition. Great Britain have won some fans with four wins
:09:38. > :09:42.out of four so far put the tests do not get any tougher as they take on
:09:43. > :09:46.New Zealand, three-time World Series winners, in their semifinal. You
:09:47. > :09:52.will be able to see that and Australia against Canada possibly on
:09:53. > :09:58.BBC Two later but we will see that on the network in a few moments.
:09:59. > :10:06.Let's have a look at what they are showing right now on BBC Two.
:10:07. > :10:16.We have a bit of swimming coming up. We will beat seeing the women's 200
:10:17. > :10:21.metres individual medley with Hannah Miley and Siobhan-Marie O'Connor in
:10:22. > :10:24.action for Great Britain. And for cable and satellite viewers, you
:10:25. > :10:28.will be able to see if Britain's number one in the women's singles,
:10:29. > :10:34.Johanna Konta going on court right now, she is one set up against
:10:35. > :10:38.Caroline Garcia of France. We will check in on her later and you can
:10:39. > :10:47.keep an eye on it on the BBC sport app and website. I have taken a seat
:10:48. > :10:52.here on the Olympic Park. It is a bit high but the lengths you have to
:10:53. > :10:56.go to to get a bit of shelter around here! I am aware from all of those
:10:57. > :11:03.asking on social that I am wearing a coat in the heat in Rio but they
:11:04. > :11:08.promised us rain! But it is a good way to lose some weight! It has just
:11:09. > :11:14.gone past lunchtime so people are enjoying themselves, they are
:11:15. > :11:21.serving sandwiches and Peter and pasta -- pizza. People seem to be
:11:22. > :11:28.enjoying themselves here and we have a great view on the high chair. I
:11:29. > :11:34.cannot quite see over to Deodoro so we will go over to Matthew Pinsent.
:11:35. > :11:39.We have seen David Florence and Richard Hounslow going in the C2 and
:11:40. > :11:44.just like David Florence did yesterday, it looks like one run and
:11:45. > :11:49.done. Absolutely, it was a very good run from Hounslow and Florence this
:11:50. > :11:55.morning. They were silver medallist in London four years ago and they
:11:56. > :11:59.lived up to that billing going in. They are second provisionally after
:12:00. > :12:03.the first qualifying run. I think it is unlikely we will see them take
:12:04. > :12:09.advantage of the second run that is just about to start here. They are
:12:10. > :12:12.safely through to the semifinal and we are keeping fingers crossed for
:12:13. > :12:15.their medal chances late in the competition.
:12:16. > :12:28.We have also seen Joe Clarke going in the K1 and Fiona Pennie is going
:12:29. > :12:33.to get a run out? Absolutely, she has an amazing Olympic record, an
:12:34. > :12:39.Olympian in 2008 in Beijing when she finished 17th in the K1 and was
:12:40. > :12:47.bitterly disappointed to miss out on selection for London 2012. Always an
:12:48. > :12:50.interesting case study, such a huge sum of enjoyment and celebration for
:12:51. > :12:54.British sport but there were a handful of athletes on the side who
:12:55. > :12:59.felt bitterly disappointed about their lack of performance or
:13:00. > :13:02.selection in her case. She has absolutely used that to instil a
:13:03. > :13:09.huge amount of training and impetus to her selection effort here and she
:13:10. > :13:13.was absolutely delighted to make the British team so we can see how her
:13:14. > :13:16.run got on and I will hand you over to the commentators, the only penny
:13:17. > :13:29.-- Fiona Pennie for Great Britain. What can Fiona Pennie do here? She
:13:30. > :13:34.has a good record, silver medal in the World Championships in 2014 out
:13:35. > :13:39.in Deep Creek. It did not go her way at Lee Valley last year but she
:13:40. > :13:44.still made the final. She trained with Joe Clarke so she will have
:13:45. > :13:49.taken a lot from his performance yesterday and also works with Mark
:13:50. > :13:53.Radcliffe in a little group. She prides herself on the fact that she
:13:54. > :13:57.has been out, it has not been easy being out for that long, it has its
:13:58. > :14:01.own challenges when you have a lot of stuff at home, friends and
:14:02. > :14:08.family, but she is up on that split and looking very much in control and
:14:09. > :14:16.focused. She is famed for the size of her biceps and she is using them
:14:17. > :14:20.well so far! 44 on the clock going through 14 Ulster 15 and 16 not as
:14:21. > :14:26.problematic as yesterday, just held a bit before going through 15 but
:14:27. > :14:31.easily across and no time wasted and now 17, pretty much the perfect
:14:32. > :14:36.line. We have seen the boats punting a lot of the war and the owner
:14:37. > :14:41.chooses to do that as well. That will be a penalty, the bow was just
:14:42. > :14:47.popped up on the entrance and now it is all about the line and keeping
:14:48. > :14:54.control. She got her catch on the stopper, using the water that turns
:14:55. > :14:58.back on itself. Being patient as she gets the angle she want on this
:14:59. > :15:05.final upstream data. Now she is away. 93 on the clock, 100.59 is the
:15:06. > :15:11.fastest so far and she could go inside, just inside, seven
:15:12. > :15:13.hundredths of a second and she has had a commend is run, she will be
:15:14. > :15:27.happy enough with that. She could definitely save sometime
:15:28. > :15:31.between 20 and 21. The speech and lost up to 20 she would try to
:15:32. > :15:36.eliminate and the penalty she gained at eight and 19. It will be really
:15:37. > :15:39.fine details, possibly the exits from the upstream gates, little
:15:40. > :15:43.things like that. What is interesting as Fiona has been
:15:44. > :15:47.working very much on wanting to lose somebody wait so she could be as
:15:48. > :15:53.explosive out of the upstream Gates as possible because they identified
:15:54. > :15:59.that is very important here. She certainly looked good. We go back to
:16:00. > :16:02.the top of the course and we have Ana Satila who is from Brazil and
:16:03. > :16:13.lives in Riyadh. The Brazilians are really excited after what they saw
:16:14. > :16:19.yesterday. There was a thrilling first runner from the mail Brazilian
:16:20. > :16:24.and he was experimenting on his second run that he was also playing
:16:25. > :16:28.to the crowd. He was enjoying it, that is a really big part of the
:16:29. > :16:32.competition. If you can enjoy you are in a really fantastic place if
:16:33. > :16:38.you are not afraid of the atmosphere and you aren't nervous from it, it
:16:39. > :16:42.shows a lot of maturity in a certain aspect, and I know that Ana Satila
:16:43. > :16:46.has taken the field of women by surprise to rapper last season. She
:16:47. > :16:51.has really caught up and really come on and she is showing good skills at
:16:52. > :16:53.the moment. She was down on the spit slightly but she is certainly
:16:54. > :16:58.looking very much in control with action on the tail of a boat now.
:16:59. > :17:04.Just as I said she was in control the water took over. I am not sure
:17:05. > :17:10.that was a planned move. It certainly wasn't a planned move. We
:17:11. > :17:15.sought Fiona Pennie negotiate 17 very well and 19 gave her a problem
:17:16. > :17:18.and this is where Ana Satila is now, she drops in and keeps the bow low
:17:19. > :17:23.and it is important to avoid clipping the gate with the bow of
:17:24. > :17:26.the boat. There is a penalty on 20. I think she was inside, the whole
:17:27. > :17:33.head has to be inside but she has dropped down below 21. Two or three
:17:34. > :17:36.seconds thrown away by Ana Satila but with those seconds goes a lots
:17:37. > :17:42.of energy and now she has to race again. The longest slalom paddlers
:17:43. > :17:45.from London 2012, still only 20 years old and competing in front of
:17:46. > :17:51.a home crowd, this is where she wants the performance of her life.
:17:52. > :17:58.Today's job is to make sure she finishes in the top 15. Two
:17:59. > :18:03.penalties, 10.28 outside puts into fifth position. A far from ideal run
:18:04. > :18:07.there. She was tight on 20 and she couldn't get a reverse stroke in to
:18:08. > :18:11.turn the boat around and she slid out to the left and had too much to
:18:12. > :18:17.do to get back across. She had to turn about all the way upstream to
:18:18. > :18:22.get back 321. Far from ideal but she kept her composure and she completed
:18:23. > :18:32.the one well. -- she completed the run well. Quite a margin between the
:18:33. > :18:37.fastest and the slowest. 1.53 was the slowest time and that was with
:18:38. > :18:40.only 12 penalty seconds. Only two athletes clear so far as we watch
:18:41. > :18:48.Stefanie Horn from Italy and the Italians have a good record in K1.
:18:49. > :18:58.They had the Olympic champion in 2012. Their man was looking fabulous
:18:59. > :19:02.yesterday. He certainly was. He was smiling and he said he felt the
:19:03. > :19:07.pressure from home and it had worked from home but he was trying to enjoy
:19:08. > :19:10.it and he was in great form. There has been little shock so far but
:19:11. > :19:15.people are looking like they are here ready to race and this course
:19:16. > :19:19.design is good with nice water, manageable, unlike what we saw in
:19:20. > :19:27.Beijing where it was just a bit oversized, very challenging for the
:19:28. > :19:34.athletes. A two second penalty on the entrance there where she didn't
:19:35. > :19:42.get her entry right. She was right on the edge of the gate. Nice and
:19:43. > :19:47.high on 19 but takes her time getting back into the flow of water.
:19:48. > :19:58.Often you can be very close but lose the boat speed as well. Good
:19:59. > :20:03.execution through 20 and 21. She drives through the upstream gate.
:20:04. > :20:14.That Eddie is wide that you want to be round the outside poll as quickly
:20:15. > :20:19.as possible. Stefanie Horn is out side with four penalties in all and
:20:20. > :20:23.she goes up into fourth position. There is a chance that when it comes
:20:24. > :20:27.to the second heat she will already know that she has qualified before
:20:28. > :20:43.she takes her run, and that is exactly the position she wants to be
:20:44. > :20:46.in. There are nine still to go. Sending her love to her fiance
:20:47. > :20:59.there. She looks pretty happy with what she did. The peace and quiet of
:21:00. > :21:03.the starting Paul but you can hear the noise of the Roaring water and
:21:04. > :21:07.it is only a few minutes before you drop in. This is Marta Kharitonova
:21:08. > :21:15.from Russia, she comes from St Petersburg. An experienced paddler,
:21:16. > :21:22.21 years old and she has not broken into the top 20 so far so she has
:21:23. > :21:27.missed out on semifinals. A heavy hit there. It really kicked her wide
:21:28. > :21:33.into the upstream gate eight. She is using the up -- back stream of the
:21:34. > :21:36.Eddie to get back up again. She needs to keep her composure. When it
:21:37. > :21:39.happens at the start of the course you must put it to the back of your
:21:40. > :21:43.mind concentrate on what you have to do. She is already outside the time
:21:44. > :21:51.of Fiona Pennie, who is leading the way. A little bit shaky. She needs
:21:52. > :21:58.the bow is very safely below, it doesn't look very sharp at the
:21:59. > :22:03.moment, a little bit cautious. She only made the semifinals in
:22:04. > :22:06.2012, she finished in ninth, she was just one place down from qualifying
:22:07. > :22:17.for the final, only eight in the final whereas we have ten here. She
:22:18. > :22:21.has a two second penalty there from gate 19. We have seen that quite a
:22:22. > :22:26.bit through this. But I mean, that will be up to the judges but I have
:22:27. > :22:39.a feeling that a 50 could be coming her way. A difficult video angle for
:22:40. > :22:43.us but I wouldn't be surprised. Smirnova from Kazakhstan is in a
:22:44. > :22:47.dangerous position, she may find she stays ahead of Marta Kharitonova. I
:22:48. > :22:54.expect the authorities are having a look at that gate. The course is
:22:55. > :23:04.completed and she is 10.49 outside, into the top seven for now, but the
:23:05. > :23:10.best are still to come. Eight to go. I would be interested to know your
:23:11. > :23:18.thoughts on the French selection. This is gate 20. Half head? It is
:23:19. > :23:22.difficult from this angle. They have been very good at the judging so far
:23:23. > :23:32.so I imagine they have had a look at it already. Was that the gate that
:23:33. > :23:41.was missed yesterday and he said he couldn't believe it? I think it is.
:23:42. > :23:47.Due to controversy, a little bit of extra pressure on her, with the
:23:48. > :23:52.Olympic champion having to sit at home which must be tougher for her.
:23:53. > :23:54.Absolutely, but they all know the selection criteria and they know
:23:55. > :23:59.exactly what they are doing before the season starts and Emily
:24:00. > :24:04.obviously didn't get it right this year. This is not a great start so
:24:05. > :24:10.far. It is a bit out of touch of the first upstream gate with a penalty
:24:11. > :24:16.and she needs to get her rhythm and get comfortable on the water. I had
:24:17. > :24:19.a chat with the French closures and they recognise the talent of
:24:20. > :24:22.Marie-Zelia Lafont but they know she is all on nothing. It puts them all
:24:23. > :24:26.on edge when she is racing because they never know when it will go
:24:27. > :24:29.wrong. It all went right in Poland this year and she took the World Cup
:24:30. > :24:33.win there and it will have given her a massive amount of confidence. Too
:24:34. > :24:42.many penalties already, with another two coming our way. She is 8.1
:24:43. > :24:45.outside Fiona Pennie 's time at the split. Another two pushes her
:24:46. > :24:51.outside the top eight and she might be reliant on the second run. This
:24:52. > :24:54.is far from the opening she would be wanted from this Olympic
:24:55. > :24:59.qualification. Very wide there against the Barnard 's. She looks a
:25:00. > :25:02.bit tired. I'm not sure if that is just that she is trying to conserve
:25:03. > :25:07.a bit of energy now because she can't do too much more or whether
:25:08. > :25:14.actually they hit some being slightly off line has really taken
:25:15. > :25:21.it out of her arms. This is not the sort of run the French were hoping
:25:22. > :25:24.for. She will get a second chance, and although she is inside
:25:25. > :25:30.qualifying at the moment, she has gone into sixth position. There is a
:25:31. > :25:39.chance she could be close to the bottom of the qualifiers come the
:25:40. > :25:43.end of this first heat. Seven to go. The silver medallist from the World
:25:44. > :25:53.Championships in Lee Valley is up next, Melanie Pfeifer from Germany.
:25:54. > :25:59.She lives in one of the -- near one of the World Cup courses. She is
:26:00. > :26:01.very experienced and she has a good record at World Championships with
:26:02. > :26:07.two bronze medals, one at deep Creek and one that Lee Valley. Yes, the
:26:08. > :26:11.Germans are traditionally very strong. They have a very good group
:26:12. > :26:16.and she is a technical paddler and looks very nice on the water. She
:26:17. > :26:20.executed gate three very nicely. Our boat -- her boat is just bouncing
:26:21. > :26:23.around on the top of the water and she is keeping the nose dry.
:26:24. > :26:31.Controlled into gate eight, using the back of the water, she pulls it
:26:32. > :26:35.back into the stopper. A sharp transfer from one side to the other
:26:36. > :26:40.and you want to see that with a driving /2 keep the boat speed high
:26:41. > :26:46.and use the momentum that you have from the Eddie into the flow. This
:26:47. > :26:53.is looking silky smooth compared to Marie-Zelia Lafont, the last
:26:54. > :27:00.competitor down. A bit low on 14 and 15. Having to hold slightly. This is
:27:01. > :27:06.a very narrow Eddie. The European champion making the course look
:27:07. > :27:14.relatively simple at this stage. Now it starts to increase in difficulty.
:27:15. > :27:19.She is through 19. 21 and 22 require good position and timing but that
:27:20. > :27:23.could be a 50 four Melanie Pfeifer, certainly a two coming her way and
:27:24. > :27:28.that has come up already. Now she has dropped back below. There may be
:27:29. > :27:32.no comeback for her here. She serves across to River right and now she
:27:33. > :27:38.can drop down through 21. The crowd appreciate the effort to get back
:27:39. > :27:43.but Melanie Pfeifer, having looked so good, so calm, so controlled,
:27:44. > :27:49.suddenly finds herself in trouble and will have to rethink the game
:27:50. > :27:53.plan. It is most definitely going to be a real make or break that bottom
:27:54. > :27:57.section of the course, I think you can move into the semifinals. 15
:27:58. > :28:04.outside and going down into tenth position. There is a distinct chance
:28:05. > :28:10.that Melanie Pfeifer might not be in the top 15 come the end of the first
:28:11. > :28:14.heat. In some ways she was lucky not to get a 50, that must have been
:28:15. > :28:18.close. It flashed up as a two and then they took it away and they
:28:19. > :28:29.must've had a conversation about and then they stuck with the two. From
:28:30. > :28:37.Melanie Pfeifer to Ursa Kragelj from Slovenia. A bit of pushback, not
:28:38. > :28:39.quite the line she must have chosen. That was careless, a two second
:28:40. > :28:44.penalty, she wasn't looking where she was, her awareness on the gate
:28:45. > :28:47.line wasn't good. What you do mentally when you have clattered one
:28:48. > :28:53.of the early gates with a careless mistake like that? You need to scrap
:28:54. > :28:57.it very quickly. It can quite easily get you in a bit of a flap about and
:28:58. > :29:02.you start trying to push harder. Ultimately these top girls should be
:29:03. > :29:05.fast enough to get into that top 15 qualifying through to the semifinals
:29:06. > :29:10.so they just have to keep it under control and limit any further
:29:11. > :29:15.mistakes. She has only done one World Cup this year but it is pretty
:29:16. > :29:18.much the case with all of those who have qualified for the Olympic
:29:19. > :29:26.Games. We can't read too much into their World Cup compositions --
:29:27. > :29:30.positions. She had a good season in 2014 and a regular in the finals,
:29:31. > :29:39.three out of five she made the final. A huge six points down on the
:29:40. > :29:43.split of a Fiona Pennie. That wasn't a good line into 19 either but can
:29:44. > :29:48.she get this across? Nicely done. Grab on the top of the pile there
:29:49. > :29:52.between 20 and 21 but it kicked her about a bit. It wasn't quick. She
:29:53. > :29:57.has to by running again as she goes down the side line. If she can stay
:29:58. > :30:02.within ten seconds of the Fiona Pennie time she will go into the top
:30:03. > :30:13.six. If she can cut the margin to 6.5 she will go into the top four.
:30:14. > :30:22.6.34 outside and just scrapes into fourth place, ahead of Stefanie
:30:23. > :30:25.Horn, how vital with those seconds become the end of the day? We will
:30:26. > :30:30.find out. They have a few minutes between the end of the first heat in
:30:31. > :30:37.the start of the second. Of course we have got the men's C2 second heat
:30:38. > :30:46.still to come. We still have five to go.
:30:47. > :31:00.We still have five more to go. The best five in the world who have
:31:01. > :31:11.qualified for the Olympics. Katerina Kudejova, she comes from Prague. Off
:31:12. > :31:16.to a steady start, tight around three, this is where we want to see
:31:17. > :31:22.them opening up, the smooth section before they hit the stopper just
:31:23. > :31:39.above gate seven. You can see the water driving back up the eddy. Nice
:31:40. > :31:46.and smooth so far, she is known for her strength, both physical and
:31:47. > :31:53.mental Ulster nice tight line on 14, perhaps not the exit. That is a good
:31:54. > :32:01.approach to 15th. Very quick through 15 and 16 but her tail got caught at
:32:02. > :32:06.the wall. And the back of the buoyancy aid might have clipped the
:32:07. > :32:12.gate, she has one penalty so far but still very close to Fiona Pennie's
:32:13. > :32:18.time. Anything in the top three will be comfortable. She was a little
:32:19. > :32:27.safer than the last couple through 20. Very much caught up between 20
:32:28. > :32:39.and 31, losing fractions of time. The last of the upstream gates. --
:32:40. > :32:43.and 21. And the 2015 world champion should be safely through to the
:32:44. > :32:46.semifinals but she had another run to come and she will keep an eye on
:32:47. > :32:53.the others but that should be good enough to be in the top 15 and she
:32:54. > :32:59.looks very relaxed indeed. She has taken under 23 world titles and
:33:00. > :33:04.obviously the world title at Lee Valley last year. Always tends to be
:33:05. > :33:10.tight on the upstreams and we saw that again. You want to be tight, in
:33:11. > :33:15.and out of the gates as quick as possible but there is always a risk
:33:16. > :33:17.and sometimes it cannot work in your favour. You are looking for momentum
:33:18. > :33:34.out. This is Jana Dukatova from Slovakia, the world
:33:35. > :33:42.champion from 2006, one of the most experienced competitors. And she was
:33:43. > :33:46.world champion in 2010, all round paddler and she regularly makes all
:33:47. > :33:54.of the finals in a season as she did in 2014. Number 14 -- number two in
:33:55. > :34:00.the world in 2014 and 2015 and she has turned up to all of the World
:34:01. > :34:04.Cup this year and done well. She is interesting, quite tall compared to
:34:05. > :34:10.a lot of the others, very long arms and she often looks like she is not
:34:11. > :34:14.trying but she gets great catch and with those long levers, she does not
:34:15. > :34:19.have the high stroke rate that some do. She is well-known for being able
:34:20. > :34:28.to drive the paddle deep and that skill could come in handy, 20 into
:34:29. > :34:34.21. And through 15 and 16 as well, she clipped the inside poll with the
:34:35. > :34:41.top of the blade so that is a penalty. She is pretty much on the
:34:42. > :34:50.same timings as Fiona Pennie. Another tight turn through 19. Very
:34:51. > :34:57.nicely done, just held that reverse stroke.
:34:58. > :35:05.She was two seconds outside Fiona Pennie at 820 and I think she was
:35:06. > :35:13.quicker than the British competitor through that particular section so
:35:14. > :35:19.this could tight -- at gate 20. That will do nicely for Jana Dukatova and
:35:20. > :35:27.she moves into fourth position for now will stop it is very tight. Jana
:35:28. > :35:33.Luuka Jones is perhaps the outstanding performance. Very good
:35:34. > :35:45.indeed, you can see how tightly they get. Luuka Jones looked very
:35:46. > :35:54.controlled and smooth. Back at the top, with just three to go it is the
:35:55. > :35:59.world number one from the 2014 and 2015 World Cup series, Corinna
:36:00. > :36:05.Kuhnle. She had a disaster at the World Championships last year, 29th
:36:06. > :36:10.position and just made it into the final at Lee Valley for the 2012
:36:11. > :36:17.Olympics but suddenly, every competitor here will know she is a
:36:18. > :36:20.threat. And in contrast to the previous paddler, much shorter
:36:21. > :36:26.strokes and dynamic and she is a very powerful paddler. Her and the
:36:27. > :36:32.owner did a lot of training together, both very powerful -- her
:36:33. > :36:39.and Fiona. And she is up on the split. She has not spent a lot of
:36:40. > :36:43.time here compared to Fiona because their selection camp was in the last
:36:44. > :36:50.World Cup race of the season so she has only had one training camp here.
:36:51. > :36:53.She has already been to one Olympics and nine were Championships so she
:36:54. > :37:05.has got the experience and she will know how to deal with situations
:37:06. > :37:12.like this. Not as neat as we saw from Dukatova. She is down on the
:37:13. > :37:16.split at the moment, not a lot of time to give away in the bottom
:37:17. > :37:23.section so she has to absolutely nailed it. She is very wide and has
:37:24. > :37:28.to go behind gate 21 and has that hard paddle to go back up but it is
:37:29. > :37:32.a risk that you cannot afford to go without it, you have to get up time
:37:33. > :37:39.on the board, not be in a risky position. What a shame. If she can
:37:40. > :37:46.just scraped into the top seven or eight, she might be all right. Fiona
:37:47. > :37:51.Pennie still has the best time here. And she picked up two penalty
:37:52. > :37:57.seconds as well so that shows you that her boat speed was tremendous.
:37:58. > :38:01.Corinna Kuhnle goes into eighth position which might still be good
:38:02. > :38:04.enough to qualify but she will not be relaxing before the start of the
:38:05. > :38:09.second heat and she will know she could be in a position where she has
:38:10. > :38:13.to race for a place in the semifinals. And something you don't
:38:14. > :38:16.want to come out of the heats with is a feeling you have not
:38:17. > :38:21.accomplished the moves. She will look at how she will do that move
:38:22. > :38:26.and find out the best ones, the coach will pick out the best runs
:38:27. > :38:34.and you can look at them alongside each other so you can seemed -- so
:38:35. > :38:42.you can see them frame by frame. This is our penultimate paddler,
:38:43. > :38:49.Maialen Chourraut, and then the superstar from Australia, Jess Foxx
:38:50. > :39:02.will be next. I know some made mistakes lower down
:39:03. > :39:08.but this looks frantic. She is renowned for her quick stroke rate.
:39:09. > :39:12.She can weave in and out of the polls and stays close to them that
:39:13. > :39:16.she is light and technical and get her boat dancing on the water and
:39:17. > :39:22.she seems to be more into her rhythm now and has settled down. Quite
:39:23. > :39:28.dynamic, getting the power in the turn, a little bit of slippage so
:39:29. > :39:33.she is very horizontal across the river which means losing time. She
:39:34. > :39:41.has had shoulder problems over the last two seasons. In fact, some time
:39:42. > :39:48.ago. Is that a factor? Can you get back to 100% after operations?
:39:49. > :39:52.Absolutely, surgery is so good. My goodness, that was very close, not
:39:53. > :39:57.sure what the judges will do, that is a penalty. She looked like she
:39:58. > :40:04.had to lean back to get her head inside the gate. Maialen Chourraut
:40:05. > :40:10.was expected to cruise through to the semifinals but she will be in a
:40:11. > :40:16.similar position to the one Joe Clarke found himself in yesterday,
:40:17. > :40:25.picking up a 50 in the first run. 54.91 outside. That pushes her down
:40:26. > :40:30.to... I'm trying to get the petitions, she is in 20th position
:40:31. > :40:36.and she will have no option to run the second heat -- get the
:40:37. > :40:42.positions. That was clear, no argument. She bounced straight
:40:43. > :40:46.through that first stopper which pushes her back to the river on the
:40:47. > :40:57.opposite side and she did not get inside it. A lot of big names
:40:58. > :41:02.struggling here at Diadora. Can Jess Fox of Australia show the rest how
:41:03. > :41:08.it's done? A lot of the others will want to see how she tackled it, the
:41:09. > :41:17.lines and moves that she makes. Nice and controlled. Just taking her
:41:18. > :41:22.time. She can open up through this downstream section before taking the
:41:23. > :41:28.wave across from seven into eight. But a two second penalty, and early
:41:29. > :41:34.penalty but she certainly has the speed to be able to fight. And we
:41:35. > :41:41.know that Fiona also had a penalty but she is down at the moment. Good
:41:42. > :41:46.boat speed through that particular section as she moves towards 14. You
:41:47. > :41:52.get the feeling that every stroke is well thought out and is effective.
:41:53. > :41:58.Absolutely. A little bit caught through 15, you want to see the line
:41:59. > :42:03.as straight as possible with the nose pointing downstream. Nicely
:42:04. > :42:11.done, taking the speed she had back into the flow. This is the drop down
:42:12. > :42:16.to 19, safely under the gate, no problems. This is where you need the
:42:17. > :42:21.strength and if anybody has the power and strength it is Jess Fox
:42:22. > :42:26.but she has dropped below 21 which has caught out a few but she has the
:42:27. > :42:30.strength to come back up on the left which nobody else has done so far
:42:31. > :42:38.but valuable seconds thrown away and that might mean that Fiona Pennie's
:42:39. > :42:43.time will stand. It will be good enough to qualify for Jess Fox but
:42:44. > :42:55.that mistake at 21 will have the Australian coaching team thinking.
:42:56. > :43:00.And with Lucy and Dell thought -- Lucien Delfort going out yesterday,
:43:01. > :43:06.they will be thinking. That should be good enough for Jess Fox.
:43:07. > :43:10.Compared to Fiona Pennie? She did not have the same speed and rhythm,
:43:11. > :43:16.not quite as quick away from the upstream dates. She just got kicked
:43:17. > :43:22.by the water. She took a few heavy hits and did not have quite the same
:43:23. > :43:29.exit speed. We know that Fiona has been working on that and it has
:43:30. > :43:36.obviously paid off. That is all 21 paddlers down in the first heat of
:43:37. > :43:41.the women's K1, their only discipline in these Olympic Games
:43:42. > :43:46.and the only chance of the medal so they have to get it right on the
:43:47. > :43:59.day. Fiona Pennie has done very well, Jess Fox was outstanding.
:44:00. > :44:13.What a fantastic run from Fiona Pennie. As the commentators were
:44:14. > :44:20.saying, quite a few of the big names not doing as well as they might have
:44:21. > :44:24.liked but Fiona Pennie sort of the course and straight afterwards she
:44:25. > :44:28.spoke to Matthew Pinsent. I think we can tell by the fact you have
:44:29. > :44:33.changed out of your race kit that your day is done. Yes, I talked to
:44:34. > :44:38.my coach and we decided to leave it for the second run, the pressure
:44:39. > :44:43.would not be the same and if I didn't do as good a run, it wouldn't
:44:44. > :44:49.be nice so I can relax until Thursday. How good was the taste of
:44:50. > :44:53.the course? Very relaxed, I had been looking forward to today, I took it
:44:54. > :44:57.in my stride and got down as I needed to and got a good run in and
:44:58. > :45:02.it was pretty solid, just one touch and a couple of small mistakes. But
:45:03. > :45:08.there were some more mistakes going on so it was enough to come away
:45:09. > :45:12.with a win after the first runs. How difficult is it to take all of the
:45:13. > :45:16.training and preparation and thought processes into 100 seconds of
:45:17. > :45:20.action? We have been added training here a lot, 75 days and training
:45:21. > :45:28.until we came here for the last few weeks. And to put it all into one
:45:29. > :45:33.run today, all of the pieces of video that we have done, all of the
:45:34. > :45:38.moves, to put it onto the plan, it was hard at easy enough in the end.
:45:39. > :45:42.Have you learned anything about your opposition or is it a bit of a
:45:43. > :45:47.phoney war at the moment? It is hard to say at this stage, their Arter
:45:48. > :45:54.runs so those girls will be going again and trying to do better. --
:45:55. > :46:02.there are two runs. It is a new race on Thursday.
:46:03. > :46:09.I caught up with the great Britain canoe slalom team a few days ago and
:46:10. > :46:13.Fiona Pennie was so keen to get back into Olympic racing because she was
:46:14. > :46:17.a Beijing Olympian and she missed out on London 2012 but finally she
:46:18. > :46:21.is out there and doing well. The Olympic Park is busy for the action
:46:22. > :46:27.this evening and the aquatic centre will be full of great British
:46:28. > :46:32.swimmers but next we are going to go into the tennis centre because
:46:33. > :46:37.Heather Watson is in action in her second round match. She breezed
:46:38. > :46:56.through in the first round but she is now taking on the Ukrainian arena
:46:57. > :46:57.set Alina. Heather Watson is up against Elina Svitolina in the
:46:58. > :47:09.company of Simon Reed. Heather Watson came back in storming
:47:10. > :47:16.fashion in the second hat. Elina Svitolina won the first set 6-3 but
:47:17. > :47:20.her form took a nosedive in the second state and Heather Watson has
:47:21. > :47:29.just finished the set. -- second set. Watson is looking in aggressive
:47:30. > :47:34.form and really keen to get on the front foot against Svitolina and it
:47:35. > :47:41.was really playing off. -- paying off. They have previous. What
:47:42. > :47:46.someone in their match at Eastbourne last year, it was one of the winds
:47:47. > :47:55.of her career, coming back from one set down to win 3-6 7-5 6-4. She has
:47:56. > :48:10.levelled up in impressive fashion with that. She had a tough one a
:48:11. > :48:21.couple of days ago, Watson, against Peng Shuai. Svitolina would have
:48:22. > :48:28.been the favourite this year. She has had a good year, she beat
:48:29. > :48:35.Bouchard in the final in Kuala Lumpur. Heather Watson has really
:48:36. > :48:41.put her in the shade in the second set. It was a bit of a meltdown from
:48:42. > :48:56.Svitolina. She was making mistake after mistake. Heather lost in the
:48:57. > :49:10.second round in London in the Olympics.
:49:11. > :49:19.She had a tough time in the grand slams, has Heather this year. In the
:49:20. > :49:23.Australian open she lost in the first round and the second round in
:49:24. > :49:32.Roland Garros. At Wimbledon she had a titanic match and lost 12-10 in
:49:33. > :49:37.the third in the first round. She was given a huge fine. A lot of
:49:38. > :49:46.people thought it was excessive, ?9,000 fine, but after losing three
:49:47. > :49:53.match points there were mitigating circumstances. Svitolina is back
:49:54. > :50:01.with us, but in what frame of mind? She looked very dispirited at the
:50:02. > :50:04.end of the second set. I would suggest she needs an encouraging
:50:05. > :50:36.start to set number three. She lost that point but there is a
:50:37. > :50:37.measure of the aggression that Heather Watson has been producing,
:50:38. > :51:07.setting the pace. The third ace of the match. From the
:51:08. > :51:33.woman from Ukraine. Perfectly balanced.
:51:34. > :51:41.Yes, top hitting from Heather Watson. She has set her stall out
:51:42. > :51:57.here. That's what Svitolina was doing in
:51:58. > :52:04.the opening set. A first strike is vital in this match. Heather is
:52:05. > :52:16.adamant in the second set that it is going to be her. Svitolina,
:52:17. > :52:25.her biggest claim to fame is getting to the quarterfinal in Roland Garros
:52:26. > :52:51.last year. There does seem to be a bit of a niggle there with Heather.
:52:52. > :53:17.She has been giving her a lot of three points.
:53:18. > :53:21.Her serve was winning her very few points early on but it is doing the
:53:22. > :53:53.job now. Oh, so good. Just dropped the wrists
:53:54. > :53:58.on it. A delightful touch. And also reaping the reward of pinning her
:53:59. > :54:10.back so that there was plenty of space to hit into it. Yes, got the
:54:11. > :54:23.line. A stunning game from Heather Watson. So it is one set all and a
:54:24. > :54:30.game all. She is the regular starter at the moment. -- she is the one
:54:31. > :54:52.making most of the moves at the moment.
:54:53. > :55:03.A clever little slice. At the moment she has got the winning of this
:55:04. > :55:28.match. Just a little too strong. She is not
:55:29. > :56:09.going to back off whatever happens. That was the kind of form that she
:56:10. > :56:19.was exhibiting in the first set. Power play, and using angle after
:56:20. > :56:27.angle. Just using sheer power against a player like Watson who is
:56:28. > :56:28.such a good move, on this slow service is just not going to reap
:56:29. > :57:35.rewards. -- slow surface. And again there, Svitolina going
:57:36. > :57:39.from power, but Watson was easily soaking it up, and she's got break
:57:40. > :58:07.point, to go ahead in the match. It's a mystery what she's looking
:58:08. > :58:15.for, but she seems to have found it. Break point it is. It is difficult
:58:16. > :58:43.for Svitolina to be held up at a point like that.
:58:44. > :58:50.OK, we will leave the tennis therefore the moment. A big thank
:58:51. > :58:53.you to Ore for taking us through BBC poll this morning. Welcome to
:58:54. > :58:58.Copacabana Beach. You can continue to watch Heather Watson on the BBC
:58:59. > :59:04.website. Welcome back to Copacabana Beach, it is 3pm here and 7pm at
:59:05. > :59:08.home, thank you for your company, we will be on BBC for all the way
:59:09. > :59:14.through until 2am. We would love you to get involved. We have a hash tag
:59:15. > :59:18.and a feast of sport for you over the next few hours. The reason we
:59:19. > :59:24.have left Heather Watson there is because Ed Ling, the world champion
:59:25. > :59:29.from two years ago in the men's trap has a chance of making it through to
:59:30. > :59:35.the gold-medal match in the National shooting Centre. He is in the
:59:36. > :59:37.semifinal and we are going to go over there now to see if Ed Ling can
:59:38. > :59:52.add to the medals from yesterday. 15 machines each athletes get from
:59:53. > :59:58.each station, one left and one right and one straightaway in front of
:59:59. > :00:01.them. The targets are travelling at anything up to 50 miles an hour.
