:00:20. > :00:26.This is good afternoon, we have already been on BBC Two earlier
:00:27. > :00:30.today. We have hopped onto BBC One for the continuation of day three of
:00:31. > :00:36.Rio's 28 Olympic Games and we are very much back in the saddle today.
:00:37. > :00:37.One of the real highlight of any Games, the three-day event
:00:38. > :00:51.cross-country section. We have seen a brutal cycling road
:00:52. > :00:55.race and the cross-country course is just as big and meaty and
:00:56. > :01:05.challenging. We go live to that very soon. We are in the boxing as well.
:01:06. > :01:13.Delayed but not forgotten, Helen Glover and Heather Stanning go into
:01:14. > :01:16.women's pair. Unbeaten for five years. That's just mark the card
:01:17. > :01:20.about some of the key standout moments you might want to factor
:01:21. > :01:25.into your day today and there are many. We have Tom Daley, one of the
:01:26. > :01:28.stars of the British team in action with Dan Goodfellow in the
:01:29. > :01:33.qualifying for the ten metres synchronised and that is of the big
:01:34. > :01:39.platform. Some great views and we are all in all of their skills.
:01:40. > :01:45.Gymnastics, the men's team. Trying to upgrade from bronze in London.
:01:46. > :01:51.The women's final and semis in the rugby sevens. Great Britain have an
:01:52. > :01:58.important match against New Zealand. The shooting, the men's trap. And
:01:59. > :02:04.this evening, although we hours of this morning, James Guy just made it
:02:05. > :02:09.to the 200 metres freestyle final. By .01 of a second. He is the
:02:10. > :02:16.reigning world champion in that. In the women's breaststroke, the
:02:17. > :02:25.Lithuanian swimmer, it will be hard for her to hang on to the title she
:02:26. > :02:28.earned four years ago. This is William Fox-Pitt's fourth Olympic
:02:29. > :02:34.Games and he has a lot of hard work to show for his efforts, two silvers
:02:35. > :02:38.and a bronze. They have all come in the team event. He has never won an
:02:39. > :02:43.individual medal but as we go through into the second element of
:02:44. > :02:48.the three-day event, he leads the standings in the individual account.
:02:49. > :02:51.That is great news and even more remarkable when you consider only
:02:52. > :02:58.ten months ago, he had a very serious fall and was in an induced
:02:59. > :03:02.coma with a serious head injury. On his comeback trail, he was only
:03:03. > :03:11.allowed to drive a car four months ago and now he is steering his great
:03:12. > :03:18.friend, Chilli Morning in this Olympic Games.
:03:19. > :03:27.The cheers ringing around this Greenwich park. William Fox-Pitt
:03:28. > :03:32.making steady progress. In October, he was in a coma after falling at
:03:33. > :03:37.the Championships. When you had the fall, at what stage did you become
:03:38. > :03:42.aware of what had happened? I think the whole time I was in France, I
:03:43. > :03:45.was there for a couple of weeks, I have no recollection of being there.
:03:46. > :03:49.I wasn't allowed home to begin with because they wanted to check I was
:03:50. > :03:55.safe. I can remember being angry that I wasn't allowed there and I
:03:56. > :03:59.think all the tests I did, to pass, it was really important to me and
:04:00. > :04:06.when I got back home and I was with my children, that was a big deal.
:04:07. > :04:10.Has your wife be 100% behind the drive to get to Rio? She seems to
:04:11. > :04:15.have known how important it is to you. She has been very supportive of
:04:16. > :04:22.me. In the beginning, we all wondered, why carry on? I have been
:04:23. > :04:27.doing it for years and I have had fine and been lucky so what was it
:04:28. > :04:32.for? The whole Rio thing was part of my rehab and it got me back in the
:04:33. > :04:38.saddle again. It got me pushing for it. Physically, there is nothing
:04:39. > :04:43.different about you. I am skinnier! And you are tall as ever! Do you
:04:44. > :04:52.think you are there in your own head? I really do. If I look back, I
:04:53. > :05:01.thought, I have ages until the Olympics and then suddenly in July,
:05:02. > :05:06.I am thinking, my goodness, I feel great and Chilli Morning feels great
:05:07. > :05:14.and we are ready. This is Chilli Morning. A bit of a superstar. Why
:05:15. > :05:18.do you think he is almost the perfect event horse? Here's a
:05:19. > :05:24.special all-rounder. Eventing is three disciplines and he can nail
:05:25. > :05:28.all three. So often top horses have a weak discipline. He is fun to
:05:29. > :05:35.ride. This could potentially be his last ever event, he is 16 years old,
:05:36. > :05:45.he owes us nothing. Rio could be it, couldn't it? He has it all to look
:05:46. > :05:49.forward to. With his wives! That partnership with him seems to be
:05:50. > :05:55.crucial, you two know each other so well. I am so lucky. I've had him
:05:56. > :06:00.since he was 12 and he is now 16 so he has been a great part of my life.
:06:01. > :06:04.Really given me great confidence to get back and riding again because in
:06:05. > :06:09.the beginning, obviously, I didn't want to fall off. He rather took me
:06:10. > :06:15.on board as a bit of a geriatric and was very gentle with me. I think he
:06:16. > :06:19.knew I was a bit erratic and dumping him was a little bit hit and miss
:06:20. > :06:25.and he didn't care at all, he just said, come with me. He likes
:06:26. > :06:33.attention. He really likes people and he likes being petted and loved.
:06:34. > :06:37.He is not at all irritable. It would be the fairy tale ending to the
:06:38. > :06:42.Hollywood film if you come back from a serious brain injury and you win
:06:43. > :06:48.gold. Wouldn't it just? That is not even on my mind. I am running a very
:06:49. > :06:49.good horse and I know if I ride him well and don't let him down, I could
:06:50. > :07:02.be up there. Since my accident, it has hit home
:07:03. > :07:09.that every day, you are lucky and I have been. I have been so lucky.
:07:10. > :07:14.Yes, France was unlucky but coming back has been very lucky. The fact
:07:15. > :07:20.he is good, I am here, we are going to Rio in a few days. It is a real
:07:21. > :07:24.dream and we are very lucky and any medals and anything else is a bonus.
:07:25. > :07:32.It is not at all expected but we will have a good go. STUDIO: An
:07:33. > :07:36.amazing story and on the comeback trail, he came back in March in
:07:37. > :07:40.serious competition. The selectors said they'd know they would like to
:07:41. > :07:47.take Chilli Morning, he said, it was a question of whether they wanted
:07:48. > :07:52.him! Great Britain in fourth place coming into today's cross-country
:07:53. > :08:02.section. The travelling reserve, Tina Cook, says it is that toughest
:08:03. > :08:06.course she has seen so far. Ian Stark of Great Britain, four tie
:08:07. > :08:10.medallist in this eventing discipline and he knows exactly what
:08:11. > :08:11.days like this are all about. This is his story, the man who will be
:08:12. > :08:23.commentating on today's events. I started riding when I was about
:08:24. > :08:28.ten and there was a kid about the same age as me who led me on this
:08:29. > :08:33.pony up and down the drive, shouting, up, down, rising trot.
:08:34. > :08:36.They let you loose going along the border hills for an hour on the
:08:37. > :08:40.horse and it was a bit intimidating and scary but I was hooked from then
:08:41. > :08:47.on because I quite liked being scared.
:08:48. > :08:55.After that, I spent every possible minute I could at the riding school.
:08:56. > :08:59.We didn't really have the money to pay for lots and lots of lessons so
:09:00. > :09:05.what I did was, if I hang around long enough and did a lot of work at
:09:06. > :09:09.the stables, we got to ride bareback at the end of the day and put the
:09:10. > :09:14.horses out on the field, about a mile away from the stables. When the
:09:15. > :09:17.stables owner was away for a day, a group of us used to make head
:09:18. > :09:20.collars out of string and go and catch the ponies in the field and
:09:21. > :09:26.have races up the field they're back. That was my introduction to
:09:27. > :09:31.riding. It probably made me hungry, but it wasn't handed me on a plate.
:09:32. > :09:35.I had to work hard for it. I loved getting onto horses and making them
:09:36. > :09:42.go better. I seemed to have a knack for it. Fanny was one of the first
:09:43. > :09:49.person that ever sent me a horse to compete and ride and it was quite a
:09:50. > :09:53.long time ago. Over 40 years! Maybe we shouldn't talk about it! You can
:09:54. > :09:59.see it in somebody, either you have it or you don't and he had it from
:10:00. > :10:07.the word go. This balance and he was very bold, that is the other thing.
:10:08. > :10:10.It is really hard to explain. Being visited riding anyone and
:10:11. > :10:14.everybody's horses and some day, you are part of the Olympics, in the
:10:15. > :10:23.British team. Does it get any better? Beautiful stride through
:10:24. > :10:29.there, go on, in. That is a remarkably good effort from Ian
:10:30. > :10:32.Stark. That was the first one. Los Angeles. Getting myself a medal and
:10:33. > :10:38.standing on the podium was incredible. I think probably there
:10:39. > :10:44.were a few tears shed but it was one of the proudest moments of my life.
:10:45. > :10:49.This is a well-deserved medal in deed for the flying Scotsman
:10:50. > :10:57.himself, Ian Stark. My kids were there. Since the Olympic medals
:10:58. > :11:03.after 88. Amazing, I don't know where time goes. These are my
:11:04. > :11:09.grandchildren. Do you want to come and sit up here? No? I still, even
:11:10. > :11:16.now, I still have to pinch myself and think about what my life and
:11:17. > :11:22.career has been. Where I started, humble beginnings, and how
:11:23. > :11:32.incredibly lucky I have been. I could get quite emotional actually.
:11:33. > :11:40.STUDIO: If that doesn't inspire you, I don't know what will. Having to
:11:41. > :11:45.think back on his career. Ian will be commentating today. These are the
:11:46. > :11:52.standings in individual as we come into. -- in the team, I beg your
:11:53. > :11:57.pardon. Germany has Michael Jung, also the individual defending
:11:58. > :12:20.champion as well. Ingrid Klimke in there as well.
:12:21. > :12:31.Michael Jung won eventing Grand Slam last year. Let's head over to the
:12:32. > :12:36.Deodoro Equestrian Centre. This is the track, the cross-country course,
:12:37. > :12:40.a big, meaty track, a real challenge for horse and rider. They will have
:12:41. > :12:45.to ride with their heads and know all the routes. It could be quite a
:12:46. > :12:55.tactical affair. This is a proper test today. Ian Stark and Mike
:12:56. > :13:01.Tucker. Welcome to the Deodoro. The build up getting under way for the
:13:02. > :13:07.cross-country. The feature part of this multi-equestrian discipline. It
:13:08. > :13:12.is so tight and so exciting. They have been walking in from all parts
:13:13. > :13:18.of Rio to this military site where the cross-country is laid out. 5840
:13:19. > :13:32.metres. The stage set for a really
:13:33. > :13:37.fascinating test. A stiff cross-country test but time and
:13:38. > :13:41.jumping penalties will be very significant and all the scores. Very
:13:42. > :13:46.close, the Olympic champion just has a narrow lead, Ian, but very close
:13:47. > :13:51.and still in a very good position. Yes, I think Britain is in a good
:13:52. > :13:57.position. It is close. Very few penalty points between the top
:13:58. > :14:04.teams. It is under pressure. They are only 0.2 ahead of the second
:14:05. > :14:10.team out there. Frantz. They certainly have a lot to live up to,
:14:11. > :14:13.the Germans. Normally, you get to cross-country day and the Germans
:14:14. > :14:18.have a strong lead but this is not the case this time. A couple of
:14:19. > :14:27.seconds over the clock is going to change things big-time. All the 12
:14:28. > :14:30.top nations have got a very experienced lead rider and the first
:14:31. > :14:37.of them, literally being called into the start box at this very moment.
:14:38. > :14:43.It is the rider from Canada, Jessica Phoenix. She was 22nd in London, the
:14:44. > :14:44.only Canadian competitor to compete. She has been a Pan-American
:14:45. > :15:02.champion. The Canadian at the moment 12th
:15:03. > :15:08.place in the team, and Jessica is getting going. The venue is looking
:15:09. > :15:16.superb, you can see the colours as she stretches away. Uphill for the
:15:17. > :15:23.first half a mile. Years, it is a nice uphill, and then they come
:15:24. > :15:31.around the corner to this upright wall. It is this arch. Not hugely
:15:32. > :15:39.well-defined, but Jessica makes nothing of that. And then continuing
:15:40. > :15:45.up to the big picnic table. Big, wide fence. An uphill approach,
:15:46. > :15:50.which makes this easier for the horses and riders. Then they come
:15:51. > :15:56.around this 360 Degrees Circle. They are turning back to the first water
:15:57. > :16:01.complex and they have a choice of routes, and the direct route is over
:16:02. > :16:08.this table and then they drop into the water.
:16:09. > :16:18.She's changed her mind, she turned to quickly into the water so she
:16:19. > :16:22.couldn't get the angle. Did she get a penalty? Looked close to me but
:16:23. > :16:29.she is through the water anyway, the jumping was OK, and then the gallop
:16:30. > :16:40.up the hill. And then there is a triple bar. Then there is a downhill
:16:41. > :16:44.approach. I think you get from the pictures the feeling of and
:16:45. > :16:52.relations, and these undulations are pretty serious. With the
:16:53. > :16:57.undulations, this is going to be a test of energy and fitness. Jessica
:16:58. > :17:05.Phoenix has shown her intentions to get on with the job. I thought it
:17:06. > :17:12.was a big fence, she had a look at it, hesitated, and now the first
:17:13. > :17:20.serious combination on the course. It is a very tight line. But, in
:17:21. > :17:25.fact, she's going the long route, so she's got to do the brush fence,
:17:26. > :17:30.turn back to the second brush fence, back up the hill and then turn again
:17:31. > :17:36.to continue on her route, so quite a number of seconds longer. And there
:17:37. > :17:41.is a lot of those eye of the needle accuracy fences. There are lots of
:17:42. > :17:53.them where the alternatives do add time to your score. The Australian
:17:54. > :17:59.manager, very experienced, he will know the game back to front, and he
:18:00. > :18:04.will have given Jessica some instructions. Oh, she called the
:18:05. > :18:10.fence. Stood off too far, and that is just a moment where the horse
:18:11. > :18:13.will test his confidence. Yes, looked very hesitant and didn't
:18:14. > :18:21.really want to know. It isn't as big as the ditch in Birley, but it is a
:18:22. > :18:28.downhill approach. Then they come to the quarry combination. They need to
:18:29. > :18:40.be confident here. Down, then back up. Well, that skinny fence, that
:18:41. > :18:46.final element, we reckon was in three strides. And Jessica gets five
:18:47. > :18:49.strides in there, so that ditch and brush really probably cause the
:18:50. > :18:54.horse to be wary, and Jessica to be cautious. And then this beautiful
:18:55. > :19:14.bamboo tea dig-mac keyhole. The course just settling down to a
:19:15. > :19:21.rhythm. Set off at a cracking pace but now a better pace. Again, she's
:19:22. > :19:28.taking the long route of this combination. She should be for
:19:29. > :19:33.minutes at this mark. Out of the ten minute 15 of the cross country, but
:19:34. > :19:37.she's already she's taking two very long and time-consuming roots, so I
:19:38. > :19:42.should think she is way down on the clock at this stage. The first rider
:19:43. > :19:46.to go for any team, their job is to go out there, find out how the
:19:47. > :19:50.courses riding, and come back and give the riders lots of information.
:19:51. > :19:55.And then they can make the decision whether they want to go faster, if
:19:56. > :20:00.the horses are managing the distance, and take some more direct
:20:01. > :20:05.lines. It is much cooler here today, the low 20s at the moment,
:20:06. > :20:09.temperature wise. But a lot more humidity. I've been walking the
:20:10. > :20:16.course and it was quite sweaty out there. She gets three strides
:20:17. > :20:21.through these log piles. Massive widespread on these fences and quite
:20:22. > :20:28.narrow tops to jump. Then they do another circle and back to the log
:20:29. > :20:35.pile. And then approaching the second of four water complexes. The
:20:36. > :20:44.French are one of the favourites, and it is Astier Nicolas, the play
:20:45. > :20:48.seven-year-old, who won the big championships in France last year,
:20:49. > :20:55.he got France off to a great start in dressage. France at the moment
:20:56. > :21:04.are in second place in the team. So, I think this will... We have some
:21:05. > :21:10.good names in the early stages. He goes direct and jumps it
:21:11. > :21:14.beautifully. More control. I think very much Astier Nicolas is a fast
:21:15. > :21:18.riser in the cross-country and the French team are sending him out to
:21:19. > :21:23.find out about the direct routes, so I wouldn't expect to see him taking
:21:24. > :21:27.many of the alternatives but it will be interesting because these two
:21:28. > :21:33.brush corners, the line looks as though it isn't fair and the riders
:21:34. > :21:39.have to decide whether they go straight or take the slight bending
:21:40. > :21:44.line. Beautiful jump, that is a big fence. You can see what drop the
:21:45. > :21:48.landing is. Running down it is up and down, it isn't massive hills but
:21:49. > :21:53.just the constant change of terrain is going to be quite influential on
:21:54. > :22:00.the horses by the end of the course. Much more measured start by Astier
:22:01. > :22:06.Nicolas compared to Jessica Phoenix, and will he go straight? This will
:22:07. > :22:12.be interesting. This is the difficult one! He gets a bending
:22:13. > :22:16.line but it looks chancy. It was a mess, he got there in four, and the
:22:17. > :22:21.horse helped out because it could have been another strike before that
:22:22. > :22:27.second corner. You can see how twisty it was. Not an easy line. We
:22:28. > :22:35.will see many more taking Jessica's route. Back with Jessica Phoenix.
:22:36. > :22:39.Big lock to these narrow fences, two of them. Did she get it? I think she
:22:40. > :22:45.might have got inside the flag there. Very close, though, and the
:22:46. > :22:50.judges will be looking at that. They have picture replays to check. It is
:22:51. > :22:54.a difficult one to assess. She got four strides down the hill. It
:22:55. > :23:00.should have been three and three. And she got four and four. The horse
:23:01. > :23:05.did stay inside the flags. But another near miss there. How many of
:23:06. > :23:14.those can you get away with on this course? Jessica's horse, A Little
:23:15. > :23:19.Romance, a short striding horse, so adding these strides in the
:23:20. > :23:24.combinations isn't going to help the other competitors watching. You can
:23:25. > :23:29.see fence 22, she's jumping out of the 33, coming on to one of the
:23:30. > :23:35.feature fences, there is a direct route which can save a lot of time.
:23:36. > :23:39.It's caused a lot of discussion. It is jumping across the corner of the
:23:40. > :23:47.house, and then a sharp turn, jumping on an angle. She has run
:23:48. > :23:51.past. That is a penalty. She will now go around, and like so many of
:23:52. > :23:58.these fences, probably ten seconds, I would guess. And the rest, I would
:23:59. > :24:04.think. What was interesting is the corner over the cottage is pointing
:24:05. > :24:08.left, very much a run out left, and Jessica had her whip in her right
:24:09. > :24:14.hand, she didn't have the whip in the right hand, so she's had one or
:24:15. > :24:17.two near misses. Why try that very difficult line when she's gone so
:24:18. > :24:23.many longer routes and had a couple of hiccups? I find that a strange
:24:24. > :24:28.decision from the rider's part. Now for Ireland, their first rider,
:24:29. > :24:35.Padraig McCarthy, with a very well-known horse, Simon Porloe. At
:24:36. > :24:40.the moment, young Padraig McCarthy has done a tremendous job in the
:24:41. > :24:47.dressage. Ireland are right up there, lying fifth in the team, and
:24:48. > :24:51.he got 48. This is a man who has trained with some of the top names
:24:52. > :25:02.in show-jumping. He took up preventing a few years ago. --
:25:03. > :25:10.eventing. Jessica Phoenix, that is a letup thence, the bamboo log. It
:25:11. > :25:15.gives them a bit of a breather, but of a confidence boost as they come
:25:16. > :25:25.up the hill towards the fruit wagon and then this final water. The final
:25:26. > :25:31.water again, a technical line. The fruit wagon looks like it has come
:25:32. > :25:35.out of London. It does. The time is interesting because already over the
:25:36. > :25:39.time is Jessica Phoenix, not all that surprising but she's quite lot
:25:40. > :25:43.over the time. A lot of time penalties as well as jumping
:25:44. > :25:49.penalties. We look at Astier Nicolas at fence 17. A test of accuracy, and
:25:50. > :25:54.Astier Nicolas passes it with flying colours. He took the flag at, that
:25:55. > :26:01.was to be expected, he was on the right side of the flag. We have two
:26:02. > :26:06.of the most brilliant up-and-coming riders in our sport, and these two
:26:07. > :26:10.will be the ones the rest of the riders will be watching back at base
:26:11. > :26:17.camp. They want to get a feel for this course. This man has written a
:26:18. > :26:21.lovely rhythm. You might not be going as fast as Jessica was at some
:26:22. > :26:27.stage but it is very measured, and that will be good because he will be
:26:28. > :26:35.saving energy. A lovely balance. Most of the approaches, he doesn't
:26:36. > :26:41.miss too much time. Now that real test... Doesn't he jump it well?
:26:42. > :26:46.Brilliant, fantastic. He isn't going as fast as Jessica, but he has a
:26:47. > :26:52.great rhythm. Astier Nicolas in the past has been criticised in past for
:26:53. > :26:56.going fast. Jessica Phoenix has jumped the last and completed so we
:26:57. > :27:01.will get her time. She could be more than a minute over, she was more
:27:02. > :27:11.than 30 seconds some 400 metres from home at least. Dressage, 52. 55.6,
:27:12. > :27:17.our estimate, would be the time penalties added, and that is a lot.
:27:18. > :27:25.It is a huge amount. As we've said, it is a short striding horse, A
:27:26. > :27:28.Little Romance, and they took the time consuming routes, so it isn't
:27:29. > :27:37.an ideal one to get a plan from. Padraig McCarthy and Simon Porloe
:27:38. > :27:42.coming down to the keyhole. Padraig McCarthy was part of the Irish team
:27:43. > :27:46.in the Europeans last year. He had a fall at the fence in the arena which
:27:47. > :27:50.took him out of the equation for Ireland. He would have learned from
:27:51. > :27:59.that, and this is a very capable horse. His late father-in-law, and
:28:00. > :28:05.by him, and owned by the Perkins'. Lucy, his wife, road this horse in
:28:06. > :28:11.Malmo in 2013. That's a bit of a surprise. Going the direct route and
:28:12. > :28:17.that is a penalty. That was interesting because I felt that he
:28:18. > :28:25.deliberately jumped up slowly to get four strides. Not quite sure where
:28:26. > :28:35.he's going now. Going around to do the alternative. He is taking the
:28:36. > :28:41.direct fences. That will be expensive. There's that refusal for
:28:42. > :28:49.20 penalties. The clock is ticking away. I felt it was a three stride
:28:50. > :28:53.up that step to those angled brushes and one striding between them. By
:28:54. > :29:04.adding that half stride, it didn't work. Away goes Luca Roman. Two
:29:05. > :29:08.brothers in the Italian team, Pietro Roman and Luca Roman. They are both
:29:09. > :29:19.very talented. Their father wrote in Moscow. Astier Nicolas, meanwhile,
:29:20. > :29:26.now well on course. Still clear. At the last corner. This has been a
:29:27. > :29:32.quick round. Oh, this man has written a peach of a ride. He has
:29:33. > :29:40.indeed. The horses looking weary but he is still going and still jumping.
:29:41. > :29:44.That was interesting, that frog. Those great big shrubs put the side
:29:45. > :29:48.which helped with horses. And that table he's jumped, and the top of
:29:49. > :29:53.the hill at the end of the course and it is a massive spread. The
:29:54. > :29:58.horse is still galloping, got his is pricked, and one to go. Look at the
:29:59. > :30:03.time! Fantastic! Is he going to make it? He's pushing, he knows it's
:30:04. > :30:10.going to be close. Can he get there? I think he will. And he's made it!
:30:11. > :30:14.Fantastic! That will bring a very happy picture to the French camp and
:30:15. > :30:17.a lot of smiles to a lot of faces on the rest of the riders because this
:30:18. > :30:28.is a tough track. Surprised you might see more
:30:29. > :30:32.problems as the day goes on. Not everyone is going to do that. You
:30:33. > :30:36.are right, but it is possible and that has put the pressure on for the
:30:37. > :30:41.rest. Because they know they have to go the direct routes to get inside
:30:42. > :30:51.the time and France already have one man. Back with Ireland's Padraig
:30:52. > :30:58.McCarthy. Oh dear, oh dear. Down they go. That under the modern
:30:59. > :31:06.rules, a horse and rider falls, it means elimination. Big
:31:07. > :31:09.disappointment for Padraig McCarthy. There were five strides in there and
:31:10. > :31:14.a little bit like the combination earlier. He got an extra stride and
:31:15. > :31:20.the halls hesitated and really didn't have the impulsion to get
:31:21. > :31:24.over that. Caught the back of the corner and sadly that is the end of
:31:25. > :31:31.the competition for Padraig McCarthy and Simon Paula. Good to see the
:31:32. > :31:37.horse and rider on their feet. They have the wonderful facilities here.
:31:38. > :31:42.All the top facilities for both medical and veterinary. Not only a
:31:43. > :31:49.wonderful set of surgeons here but also a great cooling facility as
:31:50. > :32:02.well. The facilities here are incredible and the riders have been
:32:03. > :32:08.very impressed from day one. The facilities are almost perfect and it
:32:09. > :32:19.is good to see Simon Porloe with his ears pricked walking away. Luca
:32:20. > :32:23.Roman road last year, he has had one individual gold as well as the team
:32:24. > :32:30.silver in Moscow in 1980. A very talented family. Very boldly through
:32:31. > :32:41.there. But very well. He did it easy. Their father is a very good
:32:42. > :32:46.trainer. It was interesting, he took a stride less than I expected. I was
:32:47. > :32:52.concerned that if the riders were not quite as open as that, they
:32:53. > :32:58.wouldn't get the distance. He made it look pretty straightforward, did
:32:59. > :33:06.Luca. The first away on the course for Australia. A combination known
:33:07. > :33:16.so very well at home. Sam Griffiths with Paulank Brockagh. A great start
:33:17. > :33:24.on a score of 46.3. They were in 20 Second Place themselves. Australia
:33:25. > :33:30.did well in the dressage. As you can see already, there will be a big
:33:31. > :33:35.change in the marks. 26 marks I think between the top 12. I think
:33:36. > :33:42.you will find that multiplied by quite a big number by the time we
:33:43. > :33:48.finished today. Luca Roman having a good ride, very positive throughout
:33:49. > :33:55.the course up to this point. And the horse is certainly full of running.
:33:56. > :34:01.Making nothing of these big spreads. It is quite a nice turn into those
:34:02. > :34:07.big turns, they are narrow and skinny fences and there is a nice
:34:08. > :34:14.turn in to set the horses up well. There is a bit of work for the
:34:15. > :34:18.riders. Quite a crowd building up in this ideal facility for the sport, I
:34:19. > :34:28.must say, they have done a tremendous job.
:34:29. > :34:43.I am very impressed with the rhythm of this combination. Luca looking
:34:44. > :34:47.very settled and not wasting any time setting the horse up, just
:34:48. > :34:52.keeping a good pace and rhythm. Not hustling the horse, saving the
:34:53. > :35:01.precious bits of energy for the end of the course. Certainly, a most
:35:02. > :35:06.interesting start. We can see the course can be jumped very perfectly,
:35:07. > :35:14.was beautifully done by Astier Nicolas. She also had some problems.
:35:15. > :35:20.Up at 17 now and he hits it but he sits tight. Well done. Pays the
:35:21. > :35:26.penalty, cannot get back. A decent approach. That is a 20 penalty for
:35:27. > :35:31.the refusal. There was no stride there. The first time I have seen
:35:32. > :35:35.him lose his rhythm. The horse was far too close to it and the horse
:35:36. > :35:41.caught the fence and he was probably not wise to try this. There is an
:35:42. > :35:44.alternative to the B element and he could have bypassed that corner and
:35:45. > :35:49.I think you might be kicking himself later for not doing that. It was a
:35:50. > :35:53.good save when the horse hit the fence. Lost his stirrups and
:35:54. > :36:02.balanced but carried on like an Olympian. One more straightforward
:36:03. > :36:07.fence just to get back into the rhythm again before he takes on the
:36:08. > :36:17.ski jump. The ski jump coming on at 19 and 20. This is again goes two
:36:18. > :36:32.very narrow fence systems, following the first element. Very good. He
:36:33. > :36:35.kept better rhythm again. Just for a moment, he had lost the rhythm and
:36:36. > :36:43.he was a little backwards through his fences but he was back into that
:36:44. > :36:54.forward flow. We are with Italian Luca Roman. 30 years old. Plenty of
:36:55. > :37:03.jumping penalties on his card at the moment. He was having such a good
:37:04. > :37:07.ride. Sometimes, if things are going well, you wonder why it is going so
:37:08. > :37:12.well and you can may be out yourself and I wonder if he got to those
:37:13. > :37:18.rails and decided to interfere a little bit more. For those at home,
:37:19. > :37:22.Gemma Tattersall will be the next out of the start box. Britain's
:37:23. > :37:28.first, Gemma Tattersall, next away. We are awaiting news from Sam
:37:29. > :37:38.Griffiths out on the course for Australia. Still with the Italian
:37:39. > :37:44.Luca Roman. And he is taking the long route here and we haven't seen
:37:45. > :37:49.many people try this. Four strides and turn to this very vertical gate.
:37:50. > :37:53.Quite a tough line and sensibly he took the long route. They have added
:37:54. > :38:06.some flowers in front of that gate. Gemma away. With quick look at the
:38:07. > :38:08.fifth. -- Quicklook V. She has every chance of getting on the leaderboard
:38:09. > :38:15.if she can get clear inside the time. Three scores to count and this
:38:16. > :38:22.is the first of the four to go and she is away. She was a little
:38:23. > :38:27.frustrated about her test, both very capable of getting a lot better
:38:28. > :38:32.result than that. But she is a great, tough competitor
:38:33. > :38:38.cross-country. I would expect to see Gemma going most of those direct
:38:39. > :38:42.routes. Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh, head down, he rode in
:38:43. > :38:46.London and slipped up so frustratingly. He needs to put it
:38:47. > :38:52.right this time. The Australians have come here full of confidence.
:38:53. > :38:58.That was a good shot at the first. And that is the way you should do
:38:59. > :39:11.it. He gets a good five. Paulank Brockagh has already won Babington,
:39:12. > :39:13.we know it is capable cross-country. Touchdown, one of the great
:39:14. > :39:20.show-jumping sires of recent times in Ireland. Looking determined.
:39:21. > :39:29.Another one to keep a good rhythm going. Wasted no time at that big
:39:30. > :39:32.table. It lives across the slope of the hill. Gemma Tattersall at the
:39:33. > :39:41.first water. That will be a stop. That will be 20
:39:42. > :39:57.penalties. A bit disappointing really. She was
:39:58. > :40:02.very bold on her way into the water and I thought she had a good line.
:40:03. > :40:07.She was on the left side of the log should have been able to turn but
:40:08. > :40:11.wasn't quite able to do it, landed steep into the water and suddenly it
:40:12. > :40:17.became an extra stride instead of the four, it became five. It just
:40:18. > :40:24.didn't happen. We are back with Italy's Luca Roman. He got 20
:40:25. > :40:29.penalties on his card. He is over the last and has completed Andy has
:40:30. > :40:38.some 50 time penalties, well over a minute and 15 seconds, so over the
:40:39. > :40:47.optimum time of ten minutes 15. Luca Roman, 71.6, he has got on the
:40:48. > :40:54.cross-country course as penalties. Sam Griffiths of Australia. Another
:40:55. > :40:59.one to go the long route. At this cottage and gate. I think we will
:41:00. > :41:02.see more and more riders doing that. The British team were contemplating
:41:03. > :41:06.going the longer route because they felt it would take very little time
:41:07. > :41:13.to go the long route and much, much safer. Interesting to know whether
:41:14. > :41:20.Astier Nicolas went that straight route. He is the only one so far and
:41:21. > :41:24.it is still very early days in the 64 runners. We have had one fallen
:41:25. > :41:29.overnight and the Russian competitors, only three Russians
:41:30. > :41:33.here. Sam Griffiths still clear for Australia. Did a great job at that
:41:34. > :41:37.water. It is a big drop in and then they come up at quite a scene with
:41:38. > :41:46.angle to the vertical rail at the top and Sam made it look much easier
:41:47. > :41:54.than it actually is. Waiting at the start of the first for the Dutch.
:41:55. > :42:10.This is Theo van de Vendel with Zindane.
:42:11. > :42:17.He is certainly meaning business out of the first fence. Almost going too
:42:18. > :42:24.fast, wants to make sure he has energy at the end of the track. We
:42:25. > :42:29.are back with Gemma and that is the second refusal. Things not going
:42:30. > :42:32.well for Britain's first rider Gemma Tattersall. Not looking in
:42:33. > :42:40.altogether a mood where she wants to be helpful. That is another 20
:42:41. > :42:46.penalties and actually, if she picks up another refusal on the course,
:42:47. > :42:53.she will be eliminated for a cumulative refusals. That would be
:42:54. > :42:58.very bad news for Britain. The horse both times didn't want to turn
:42:59. > :43:05.right. Sam Griffiths at the last water. I wonder what his time is.
:43:06. > :43:11.Now this frog... Gets it. There was a little bit of discussion about the
:43:12. > :43:16.actual defining of that fence. They repainted it. There was a good bit
:43:17. > :43:28.of riding thereby Sam. Actor Gemma and a quick -- and Quicklook V. --
:43:29. > :43:37.back to Gemma and Quicklook V. Beautifully jumped. Those two log
:43:38. > :43:42.piles. Best we have seen today. 11-year-old mare. Some very good
:43:43. > :43:54.performances. Sam Griffiths coming for home. One more. Be interesting
:43:55. > :43:59.to pick up the time. One inside so far. Astier Nicolas. Getting in with
:44:00. > :44:08.about three or four seconds to spare. Has Sam Griffiths done that?
:44:09. > :44:17.I would suspect not but we will see. 6.8 time penalties. I think that is
:44:18. > :44:20.perfectly feasible. Astier Nicolas really showed, he went all the
:44:21. > :44:26.direct routes and it really did hit a great rhythm. Brilliant for Sam,
:44:27. > :44:29.after the disappointment of London, he has had a great ride
:44:30. > :44:34.cross-country. Always pretty in courage and for the Australian team.
:44:35. > :44:39.Things are looking good for Australia. One good thing for
:44:40. > :44:45.Britain is that the three dressage scores that you would hope, came out
:44:46. > :44:52.very even, Britain scoring more in the 40s.
:44:53. > :45:02.It's not the end of the day yet. Gemma attack 17 and makes it look
:45:03. > :45:09.easy now. She's already got two individual refusals on course. I'm
:45:10. > :45:16.not sure whether he intended to do that but it was very quick and very
:45:17. > :45:20.clever. He jumped so much right-to-left over the first quarry,
:45:21. > :45:24.he couldn't get back to the second one. He wasted very little time,
:45:25. > :45:33.which might be a route more and more taking. So, here you see, he hasn't
:45:34. > :45:40.come straight but across to make this corner easier. It's a massive
:45:41. > :45:45.jump, but it would have to be much more to the right to get lined up
:45:46. > :45:54.for the second corner. His eyes on the second corner, and then he turns
:45:55. > :46:02.away. Again, you get the picture of this rolling terrain as we rejoin
:46:03. > :46:05.Gemma Tattersall and the ski jump. She can't have another refusal,
:46:06. > :46:11.which is a sensible decision because she'd want to get home. The clock is
:46:12. > :46:16.ticking by. She takes the alternative. And she had to be very
:46:17. > :46:25.careful there knocked her tracks. She got away with it, that is a good
:46:26. > :46:29.decision. If she had made the mistake and crossed her tracks, that
:46:30. > :46:33.would have been a technical refusal, so she would've got 20 penalties,
:46:34. > :46:39.and she can't afford that, because that would incur an elimination.
:46:40. > :46:41.She's already had two hiccups earlier on. Tim Price for New
:46:42. > :47:02.Zealand. He was a late call-up. He got a
:47:03. > :47:10.dressage of 47. New Zealand equals six. And, again, a very experienced
:47:11. > :47:17.man to get New Zealand under way. His horse was withdrawn through
:47:18. > :47:23.injury back in the spring. As Gemma now is at the fence, the cottage and
:47:24. > :47:31.gate, going the wrong way. You can see the long route. We've only seen
:47:32. > :47:36.one attempt at it so far on the screen, and they didn't manage it.
:47:37. > :47:49.So, the majority taking the longer route. Another one that Nicolas
:47:50. > :47:53.Wettstein took, because he's been the only one who's been home in
:47:54. > :48:01.time. What a great start for Britain. Gemma Tattersall now in
:48:02. > :48:07.shot, out of the third of four quarters. She has had to refusals at
:48:08. > :48:20.defence four, and then later at the ski jump. So she is settling in to
:48:21. > :48:30.get him. Pippa Funnell is out at three, Fox-Pitt at two. And then at
:48:31. > :48:33.four, it is Kitty King. She's taken one long route, and she has
:48:34. > :48:41.certainly slowed down. So there is going to be a lot of time. Bandon to
:48:42. > :48:48.the end of this. I'm afraid it will. Don't be surprised to see three
:48:49. > :49:01.figures, I suspect, for Quicklook V and Gemma. This is a big individual
:49:02. > :49:07.fence, very square, the London vegetable trolley. Yes, well, this
:49:08. > :49:15.final water combination... Well, we're not going to see it. Back to
:49:16. > :49:23.Theo van de Vendel. This is one of three fences, and hopefully nothing
:49:24. > :49:37.will go wrong. He had a great day in the dressage
:49:38. > :49:45.arena, looks more impressive out on the cross-country course, this
:49:46. > :49:51.horse. Can he get the gate? That is what I think we will see. His air
:49:52. > :49:55.jacket goes off, gives him a bit of protection. If you jump a fence like
:49:56. > :50:01.that, if you catch Shawnee, it flicks you, which is the downside of
:50:02. > :50:07.jumping this fence. For me, he was too fast. That is a tight turn. The
:50:08. > :50:12.worry was always going to be if you turn tight and quick you're going to
:50:13. > :50:17.hit the fence on the angle and it will do exactly what happened. Flip
:50:18. > :50:21.the horse sideways. That was a ride error about the speed and approach.
:50:22. > :50:25.That air Fest would have helped him as the horse rolled over him but the
:50:26. > :50:31.horse and rider are back on their feet. Gemma Tattersall on the way
:50:32. > :50:41.home, she's over one of the historic bridges here in Rio and downhill to
:50:42. > :50:47.one of the last two fences. Very disappointing start for the British
:50:48. > :50:50.team. And, indeed, for Gemma, but the good thing is she's going to
:50:51. > :50:54.come home, going to come back with vital information for the other
:50:55. > :51:01.riders, and be able to tell them about the course. And she has
:51:02. > :51:07.completed. It is 40 jumping penalties to add to the score. 89.6.
:51:08. > :51:16.The penalties to be added to her dressage score of 47.2. So, Britain
:51:17. > :51:23.now has an uphill task. But not impossible, as the world champion
:51:24. > :51:31.combination for Germany get under way. Sandra Auffarth with Opgun
:51:32. > :51:40.Louvo. They won the worlds in France, and they are away and over
:51:41. > :51:46.the first. Germany leaning after -- leading after dressage but it is
:51:47. > :51:51.close. Tim Price, coming to the second of the four waters. It is a
:51:52. > :52:03.young horse but a horse with a lot of ability. And a great pilot on
:52:04. > :52:09.top. It is a big ask for this horse. He makes that water look very
:52:10. > :52:14.simple. There is quite a long gallop now. This is a part of the course
:52:15. > :52:21.the riders can make up a bit of time. Nice, open stretches. Yes,
:52:22. > :52:28.they've got the combination of the Oxo to the corner, but the rest of
:52:29. > :52:33.the fences on this big loop are just single straightforward fences. You
:52:34. > :52:40.could almost see him up the gear there as he hit the galloping
:52:41. > :52:46.stretch. I think Sandra probably wasn't going to jump that fence. I
:52:47. > :52:53.think she will be without penalties, just loses a fraction. This is a big
:52:54. > :52:58.striding horse, Opgun Louvo. He hasn't had cross-country penalties
:52:59. > :53:08.for a long, long time, this horse. As we are back now with Ringwood Sky
:53:09. > :53:12.Boy and Tim Price. For Sandra, it is 20 penalties because it is a, B, C,
:53:13. > :53:22.D and she circles between the elements. You're right. Well done.
:53:23. > :53:36.It is a penalty for the Bob Champion -- world champion. So, not the ideal
:53:37. > :53:41.start for the Germans. Six years without jumping penalty. And now 20.
:53:42. > :53:45.Tim has to be careful but he is being clever, he hasn't crossed his
:53:46. > :53:51.tracks, he's going to turn right and get back to the final element. This
:53:52. > :54:02.is where the course walking has been so important. They've been very
:54:03. > :54:08.clever with their fence numbering. The pilot has to be very awake with
:54:09. > :54:12.their course walking. Sandra very quickly through the ski jump. And
:54:13. > :54:15.you could see the problems she had a fence four, the horse was too bold
:54:16. > :54:20.and slightly running away with her. As he was going through the quarry,
:54:21. > :54:26.he was accelerating, she sat, hanging onto him, trying to steady
:54:27. > :54:33.him. He knows his job, this horse, but if the horse gets complacent, a
:54:34. > :54:38.little bit cocky, then these technical fences are going to catch
:54:39. > :54:41.them out. Great pictures were getting of this cross-country horse,
:54:42. > :55:02.and a lovely jump through that keyhole. Oh! What bad luck. And that
:55:03. > :55:08.is, I'm afraid, elimination. Oh, that was not in any way deserved. It
:55:09. > :55:14.wasn't deserved but he did go around quite fast. You can see how quick he
:55:15. > :55:20.is going and that is a tight circle. That is such an infuriating way to
:55:21. > :55:31.go out of the Olympics. Well, these early riders, these are the first
:55:32. > :55:32.riders of each team, and we are seeing drama right from the
:55:33. > :55:36.beginning. It is a clever bit of designing. The horses are coping,
:55:37. > :55:44.the mistakes are coming from the riders. I would agree with you. The
:55:45. > :55:50.grass is short, we have had some dampness in the air this morning.
:55:51. > :55:56.But we have seen there, you can't afford to take tight turns. Two we
:55:57. > :56:03.have seen slip up. Away goes the stallion written by Linda Algotsson
:56:04. > :56:16.who had a great run in the Swedish team. Her sister, Sara, is also in
:56:17. > :56:28.the team here. This stallion is ten years old. Back with Opgun Louvo.
:56:29. > :56:36.And Sandra Auffarth has 20 points penalty. He is flying along this
:56:37. > :56:41.course. As we've seen, the speed has caused some hick ups already on this
:56:42. > :56:47.course. Yet, it is speed that has got Astier Nicolas home in optimum
:56:48. > :56:54.time. What an intriguing day we have ahead. It was speed that got him
:56:55. > :56:59.around, but, on the other hand, he wasn't hurrying. Measured speed. A
:57:00. > :57:08.young guy who's been given stick in the past for being reckless and
:57:09. > :57:14.speeding, it was made sure riding. I can concur with that. Sandra
:57:15. > :57:27.certainly has not taken her foot off the accelerator. Over the big house.
:57:28. > :57:33.Still taking quite a hold, this big chestnut. Now 14 years old, what a
:57:34. > :57:46.start he has been. Looked fantastic. All the class and
:57:47. > :57:49.ability. He makes things look easy, and she's had that mistake earlier
:57:50. > :57:54.on but she isn't going to have time for the is time. It looks like she's
:57:55. > :58:02.absolutely determined to go inside the time. She has the 20 penalties,
:58:03. > :58:08.she doesn't want any more added. All these fences downhill, when you walk
:58:09. > :58:13.them, they look way over the maximum height, but that is clever course
:58:14. > :58:21.designing. This is a very decent fence. That is Brazilian timber,
:58:22. > :58:26.very, very hard. The team building this course have really put in an
:58:27. > :58:32.enormous amount of work. Some of the fences come all the way over from
:58:33. > :58:36.England. But some are the really hard timber, and that has made their
:58:37. > :58:44.job, where they've had to use that timber, very difficult. The cottage.
:58:45. > :58:48.She going straight. Oh, it isn't pretty but she gets it. We thought
:58:49. > :58:54.it was four in there but the horse decided himself to go in three, and
:58:55. > :58:58.you can see he had pull Sandra through there. The horse knew what
:58:59. > :59:06.he was doing and her job was to go with him.
:59:07. > :59:17.That's the third of the four quarters. -- waters. Still full of
:59:18. > :59:22.running. The weather has really helped today. It is much cooler, and
:59:23. > :59:31.the horses will be the beneficiaries of that. Now coming to this fence
:59:32. > :59:38.that actually looks quite small when you walk it but it does measure up
:59:39. > :59:42.to the maximum 1.2 metres. That is the maximum height, and she whistles
:59:43. > :59:51.around, she is within half a mile of home now. It'll be interesting to
:59:52. > :59:56.see with that refusal at fence four weather shall make the time because
:59:57. > :00:00.Astier Nicolas took all the short cuts, or there were not certain. My
:00:01. > :00:05.word, she's making sure she jumps this, and I don't blame her. It is
:00:06. > :00:10.upright, square and wide. And she wants to make sure she has control
:00:11. > :00:19.for this final water combination. The first American rider sets off,
:00:20. > :00:25.Boyd Martin, with Blackfoot Mystery. The Americans already we can see,
:00:26. > :00:33.they're not going to play much part in the competitions. They are equal
:00:34. > :00:38.sixth with New Zealand. 137.5, the score, some 15 marks behind the
:00:39. > :00:43.leaders. 15 marks on a day like this will be perfect.
:00:44. > :00:53.I think you are right, it is all about completion today. Sandra or
:00:54. > :00:57.fast at this final water. Took his stride out and she is not going to
:00:58. > :01:02.make that turn. The frog is a separate number so she won't get a
:01:03. > :01:06.penalty for that. She won't present, she was just a bit out of control.
:01:07. > :01:10.It is quite something the horse is still so fresh and bold and full of
:01:11. > :01:15.running at the end of this cross-country course. We thought
:01:16. > :01:21.horses would begin to look tired. This young lady jumped onto the
:01:22. > :01:26.scene in 2011. She has been in every Championship teams since and has won
:01:27. > :01:33.a gold medal every time she has been there. Will she do it this time? Not
:01:34. > :01:40.looking so good, they are Olympic champions remember. She heads down
:01:41. > :01:47.to the last. Individual silver in the Europeans last year but of
:01:48. > :01:51.course, a golden team it was for Germany in the Europeans. She comes
:01:52. > :02:02.out, stops the clock, still pulling her arms out. 44.8, but includes 20
:02:03. > :02:08.jumping penalties. Astier Nicolas is looking better and better at the
:02:09. > :02:16.time of asking. She looked like she was flying and almost out of
:02:17. > :02:22.control. Look at these lovely misters, the horses come back, this
:02:23. > :02:26.is to cool them down. The facilities here are absolutely a one. It is
:02:27. > :02:31.good to get the cameras in and to see the careful attention to detail
:02:32. > :02:39.to horses, they are so well looked after and indeed, they should be.
:02:40. > :02:45.Boyd Martin, one of two Australian-born riders but now
:02:46. > :02:49.riding for Australia. -- America. They were disappointed with their
:02:50. > :02:55.dressage but they have a very experienced team here, ending with
:02:56. > :03:05.the other Australian-born, now living in the United States, Phillip
:03:06. > :03:12.Dutton,. This roller-coaster ride through Sugarloaf mountain,.
:03:13. > :03:27.He whacked a flag at wasted no time. -- but he wasted no time. Linda
:03:28. > :03:33.Algotsson for Sweden. Always be known as a pretty big rider across
:03:34. > :03:35.the country. This young stallion not looking as if it is in a great
:03:36. > :03:52.hurry. Jumping the fence as well. She rode another of her mother's
:03:53. > :03:56.homebred horses in the European Championships in Malmo. This was the
:03:57. > :04:01.last time we saw her in a Swedish team, it was 2013. She was the
:04:02. > :04:09.mother of the great Vega who they also bred. Her sister took
:04:10. > :04:19.individual bronze in the London Olympics.
:04:20. > :04:26.Steadily down into the three jumps, got three strides and very
:04:27. > :04:30.definitely did not plan to make that turn but she was rather close to the
:04:31. > :04:34.alternatives. You have to be careful that she doesn't cross her tracks. I
:04:35. > :04:42.think she probably just got away with that. But trotting on a
:04:43. > :04:49.cross-country course is not ideal. But she is clear.
:04:50. > :05:06.Now in the start box is the first for the home team, Boyd Martin.
:05:07. > :05:13.Marcio Appel help with it the Ronchi men -- Iberon Jmen.
:05:14. > :05:20.They will be looking to get three good scores across cross-country
:05:21. > :05:25.because they know they will climb. Already, a lot of the top riders
:05:26. > :05:30.having these problems. This is Boyd Martin and he is travelling. Well,
:05:31. > :05:35.it is a thoroughbred and he is making use of the fact this horse
:05:36. > :05:42.will have the stamina and the gallop. He is not hanging around.
:05:43. > :05:47.One of three racehorses that have come off the track. This horse had a
:05:48. > :05:56.very good track record. He is using his speed to very good effect. Did a
:05:57. > :06:03.very decent dressage. Nicely over 17. 47.7, he got in the dressage. In
:06:04. > :06:12.30 Fifth Place but less than ten marks behind the lead. -- 35th
:06:13. > :06:15.place. He has looked quicker so far. Let's hope this horse has the
:06:16. > :06:20.stamina to keep this incredible gallop on right to the end. Boyd
:06:21. > :06:26.Martin knows his horses well and he gets them very fit. No wasting of
:06:27. > :06:29.time in the preparation for that fence. That is one of the
:06:30. > :06:35.significant factors that could slow you down. Picking up the pace a bit
:06:36. > :06:45.more as he comes to Sugarloaf Mountain.
:06:46. > :06:52.He did a good job because he was going very fast Andy had to get
:06:53. > :07:01.reorganised, rebalanced, make sure the horse was given the time to see
:07:02. > :07:08.these fences. Linda Algotsson with the stallion, fair net. Linda
:07:09. > :07:16.Algotsson one of the team trainers for the Swedish. They have had some
:07:17. > :07:24.good performances. The best was their team bronze medal in the Malmo
:07:25. > :07:29.Europeans in recent times, in 2013. Still clear, to our knowledge, as
:07:30. > :07:38.she now heads up another little rise to the fourth and final water.
:07:39. > :07:54.So, quite a test. You can see the test beautifully. Now she is in
:07:55. > :07:58.trouble. That is very definitely 20. Actually... They are separate now
:07:59. > :08:03.but they are not the first two? The first fence is at 28 -- 28 and the
:08:04. > :08:53.brush is at 29. STUDIO: A change of events for us.
:08:54. > :08:59.You will be able to keep up with it on the app and the Red Button. We
:09:00. > :09:04.will be back to see William Fox-Pitt around 4:40pm, in his eighth games
:09:05. > :09:08.and Michael Jung of Germany, the defending individual champion. A lot
:09:09. > :09:14.going on there but we have a lot to get through. We are going boxing, as
:09:15. > :09:19.you can probably guess. Four years ago, Great Britain's boxes topped
:09:20. > :09:27.the medals, three of them gold. A lot to live up to. We have seen four
:09:28. > :09:32.British boxers in action. Galal Yafai, the very first boxer to do so
:09:33. > :09:36.in the Rio competition. As you may know, he comes from very strong
:09:37. > :09:40.boxing stock, the youngest of three boxing brothers and one of his
:09:41. > :09:46.brothers competed for Great Britain in 2008. Like our new medallist in
:09:47. > :09:50.the pool, Jazz Carlin and Adam Peaty, these are Galal Yafai's first
:09:51. > :10:12.Olympics. We are currently at the amateur
:10:13. > :10:17.boxing club in Birmingham, where I am from, but I'll is a train in
:10:18. > :10:24.Sheffield. I have five brothers and two sisters and three of us box.
:10:25. > :10:38.I am amateur but I look up to them. I live with my brother. We are both
:10:39. > :10:43.really messy. He is always rummaging, it seems a bit unfair. I
:10:44. > :10:49.started when I was 17, my first fight when I was 18. I think I won
:10:50. > :10:54.my first nine or ten fights. I was working in a factory and I was
:10:55. > :10:58.boxing. I had to do everything and it was tough. I didn't think I was
:10:59. > :11:05.better than anyone else but I thought I was good enough to do
:11:06. > :11:13.something in boxing. This was after our brothers fought in the European
:11:14. > :11:18.Championships in Russia. One won a silver and the other won bronze.
:11:19. > :11:24.This is my brother. This is another picture of myself. I think I had won
:11:25. > :11:33.the under ten national Championships. Frank is the governor
:11:34. > :11:39.here, the main man. This is when my brothers fought. It was good for the
:11:40. > :11:43.young kids to look up to. This was the British light middleweight
:11:44. > :11:47.champion. He happens to be the performance director now. It is good
:11:48. > :12:02.to keep it all in Birmingham. I cannot wait to go. I have already
:12:03. > :12:06.been to Brazil in December. I won bronze there. It was a good trip and
:12:07. > :12:10.I enjoyed it but never did I think I would go back Brazil. I think a
:12:11. > :12:15.couple of my mates will come out, it'll be good to get some support.
:12:16. > :12:22.When I found out I made the team, I was over the moon.
:12:23. > :12:32.I never say what I am aiming for but I always want to go and win. I have
:12:33. > :12:36.only had 29 fights. I don't want to say I will win a medal but I will do
:12:37. > :12:44.my best and I am good enough to win a medal. It just depends what colour
:12:45. > :12:49.it is. STUDIO: Galal Yafai won his first fight against the boxer from
:12:50. > :12:53.Cameroon and is now rewarded, fighting against a 19-year-old
:12:54. > :12:57.Cuban. Number one in this light flyweight division and has been
:12:58. > :13:05.flagged up as a pretty special talent. He is known as the small
:13:06. > :13:16.giant back home. Yafai lost on points to him in June. Where is the
:13:17. > :13:27.crowd? It tends to be a bit of a slow burner they tend to drift in as
:13:28. > :13:33.the competition progresses. But make no mistake, the fans are here in
:13:34. > :13:40.attendance. This is the fifth session of boxing. Galal Yafai, 23
:13:41. > :13:45.years of age, from Birmingham. Preparing to square off for the
:13:46. > :13:50.second time in a matter of months against the number one seed, the man
:13:51. > :13:57.known as the tiny giant. The teenage sensation, Joahnys Argilagos of
:13:58. > :14:00.Cuba. This man making his first appearance in the Olympic tournament
:14:01. > :14:06.by virtue of the number one seeding. The beneficiary of buying in of the
:14:07. > :14:14.opening round and Galal Yafai interested against the aggressive
:14:15. > :14:20.Cameroon Ian. He won that contest comfortably on points. He is making
:14:21. > :14:22.his second appearance. You could spend a lot of time thinking about
:14:23. > :14:33.the tournament. Thinking doesn't really do you that
:14:34. > :14:36.much good at all because you are waiting and waiting and there are
:14:37. > :14:42.lots of distractions. You just want to get on with it. He already has
:14:43. > :14:47.one good contest under his belt and this will be the toughest contest
:14:48. > :14:51.probably of his career to date, but he is good enough to do it. He just
:14:52. > :15:00.has to believe in his own ability. He is ready.
:15:01. > :15:05.So, Yafai introduced to the crowd ahead of his second appearance in
:15:06. > :15:27.Rio 2016. So, tardy exit from the boxing ring
:15:28. > :15:35.by the cameraman. We are under way in this second-round contest of the
:15:36. > :15:43.men's four kilograms light flight weight -- light flyweight. The
:15:44. > :15:49.22-year-old from Birmingham, Yafai, has made a rapid rise. That was a
:15:50. > :15:53.good two punch combination, the reigning world champion, that is
:15:54. > :15:55.Argilagos of Cuba, the tiny giant, the second meeting of these two
:15:56. > :16:16.boxers in a matter of months. They met before and it was Argilagos
:16:17. > :16:20.who won a unanimous decision. You can see straightaway the tactics
:16:21. > :16:24.from Yafai is to keep on the front foot and keep his opponent off
:16:25. > :16:29.balance, so it is a positive start from him. He has to beat his
:16:30. > :16:32.opponent to the punch. The chap is important and then throw the left
:16:33. > :16:37.hand but he has to compete with him in terms of the work rate. Look at
:16:38. > :16:41.Argilagos trying to get into the rhythm is so Yafai, it is a good
:16:42. > :16:46.start but he has to keep going and keep throwing the shots. That was a
:16:47. > :16:54.good shot from Yafai. One of three boxing brothers out of the Yafai
:16:55. > :16:58.brotherhood. They are now professionals, his two other
:16:59. > :17:04.brothers. He is in pursuit of his man. Argilagos, this compact
:17:05. > :17:14.flyweight doesn't stand more than five foot tall. Yafai with the
:17:15. > :17:19.advantage in height. That was a decent right champ. He is a very
:17:20. > :17:23.good move, the Cuban, using all of the space in the boxing ring. You
:17:24. > :17:31.have to disrupt the rhythm of the Cubans. If you let them disrupt
:17:32. > :17:37.their -- establish their rhythm, they go through the motions in terms
:17:38. > :17:43.of skills. They show their skills, and so Yafai has to disrupt the
:17:44. > :17:47.rhythm. He is confident on the front foot. He has to do twos and threes
:17:48. > :18:01.rather than singles. He has to double up. Targeting the body
:18:02. > :18:06.effectively, Yafai. There are shouts of Cuba reverberating around this
:18:07. > :18:14.arena. The crowd favourite is the man in red. Argilagos beginning to
:18:15. > :18:24.peck and Pope now as he skips away from him.
:18:25. > :18:29.Yafai on the front foot, aggressively in pursuit of his man
:18:30. > :18:32.throughout the three minutes but Argilagos with plenty of success on
:18:33. > :18:37.the back foot during the opening round. It hasn't been too bad for
:18:38. > :18:42.Yafai. He is on the front foot, pushing his opponent back, this guy
:18:43. > :18:48.is very skilful. As he punches, he maintains a gap because he needs the
:18:49. > :18:53.time and room to work. Yafai, when Argilagos punches and steps back,
:18:54. > :18:59.that's when he has to increase that fast tempo with the feet. That is a
:19:00. > :19:03.nice shot. Yafai waited and hesitated but that's a better
:19:04. > :19:09.response, pushing his opponent back. He's there, that's not bad. Then he
:19:10. > :19:14.walks onto the right hand. That is a lovely shot from Argilagos. And
:19:15. > :19:22.again but it is a close round. So the ten point system used. One of
:19:23. > :19:27.the judges favouring Yafai. 2-1 favouring the man in red.
:19:28. > :19:34.Competitive opening round and Yafai will take encouragement from that.
:19:35. > :19:38.Yafai won the fourth round across the board in early competition. He
:19:39. > :19:48.has started aggressively in this second-round.
:19:49. > :19:59.In the WSB final, he lost rounds one, two and five from all three
:20:00. > :20:04.judges. That was in Uzbekistan. There's the room again that
:20:05. > :20:09.Argilagos needs. He's hardly coming forward, the Cuban. He's sitting and
:20:10. > :20:15.maintaining the gap. That is lovely boxing by the Cuban. Yafai has to
:20:16. > :20:21.keep on him, send the left hand in. That's better from Yafai. That was a
:20:22. > :20:33.striking left hook from Yafai just a moment ago.
:20:34. > :20:44.Yafai clearly one of the best light flyweight boxers in the world having
:20:45. > :20:47.booked his place in Rio 2016 via the European qualification tournament.
:20:48. > :20:52.It's up to debate whether he's the best boxer in the family,
:20:53. > :20:57.considering his older siblings have had glittering ten years in the best
:20:58. > :21:08.of Great Britain. Talented family, and they? Very good boxers. Good
:21:09. > :21:14.punches, good technique, good style. Now Yafai coming forward, and this
:21:15. > :21:20.is the right tactic. On the ropes, he has to punch in terms of threes
:21:21. > :21:23.and fours. So, Argilagos invoking the referee on that occasion. But
:21:24. > :21:31.obeying the instruction to stop boxing. Landed a couple of
:21:32. > :21:35.unprotected shots on the chin of Yafai. He's targeting the body in an
:21:36. > :21:42.effort to slow down the movement of this Cuban. He has a good right hand
:21:43. > :21:47.and a good left hook on the retreat, Argilagos. He has to switch the
:21:48. > :21:56.attack now and again, Yafai, to downstairs, target the body. This is
:21:57. > :22:02.a great effort from Yafai. He has to keep it going. He's taken a lot of
:22:03. > :22:07.encouragement from that first meeting, particularly taking the
:22:08. > :22:13.fourth round across the board. But, again, Argilagos almost perpetually
:22:14. > :22:21.on the back foot. That could count against him in the scoring of the
:22:22. > :22:27.this round. Argilagos is crafty, holding on the inside too much. The
:22:28. > :22:41.referee has spotted that. Let's listen in to the blue corner.
:22:42. > :22:48.Just watching the boxing here now, Yafai on the front foot coming
:22:49. > :22:55.forward. He puts his opponent under pressure. The crowd are getting
:22:56. > :23:00.animated as well. Again, it is a close round. Let's have a look. So,
:23:01. > :23:08.this time, all three judges have favoured the work of the man in red,
:23:09. > :23:12.so it is tied up for judge C. It is a 2-point deficit faced by Yafai
:23:13. > :23:25.going into the third and final round of this second-round encounter.
:23:26. > :23:32.Great Britain's Yafai needs a big round him because he's trailing by
:23:33. > :23:36.two points on the scorecards of two judges. And perhaps aware of that
:23:37. > :23:41.fact in his own mind, if not empirically, he's come out with such
:23:42. > :23:44.an aggressive stance. Good right hand through the middle by a
:23:45. > :23:48.Argilagos but it is a swarming attack by Yafai in an effort to
:23:49. > :23:54.extend his stay in the Olympic tournament. Yes, great effort from
:23:55. > :23:58.Yafai in this round, listening to his corner, he started very quickly.
:23:59. > :24:03.He knows he's behind, he has to raise the tempo and he's doing that.
:24:04. > :24:08.He has to steady himself and tried to improve the accuracy a little bit
:24:09. > :24:13.more, throw the punches on the inside. That's better. Just to try
:24:14. > :24:20.to create a bit of space on the inside to work. Argilagos, as well
:24:21. > :24:29.as the world title in Bohol last year, he took the American
:24:30. > :24:33.Continental title as well. He's granted an audience with Fidel
:24:34. > :24:38.Castro in 2013. He is an established star. The Cubans have high hopes to
:24:39. > :24:42.continue their tradition of excellence in the boxing ring. Good
:24:43. > :24:48.right hand by Argilagos, now engaging with Yafai in the centre of
:24:49. > :25:05.the ring. Yafai's attack is slowing down, and he's frustrated.
:25:06. > :25:14.It is a 50-50 contest. Yafai is having some success. Maybe moved off
:25:15. > :25:19.to the side here and there and try different angles. But he must punch
:25:20. > :25:23.more on the inside, Yafai, he has to find the room. Argilagos is clever
:25:24. > :25:29.on the inside. The referee should be stronger because he is holding a lot
:25:30. > :25:37.on the inside. Good uppercut from Yafai in that exchange but if the
:25:38. > :25:41.referee isn't intervening, Yafai has to take the opportunity to take this
:25:42. > :25:49.man under significant pressure. Terrific exchange at centre ring and
:25:50. > :25:56.the crowd are on their feet. Again, Argilagos showing ring craft beyond
:25:57. > :26:01.his tender 19 years, tying up his man on the blindside of the referee.
:26:02. > :26:06.He has to find his space is better, young Yafai. It is an art to box on
:26:07. > :26:15.the inside, you have to find the room to work. He is being dragged
:26:16. > :26:18.in, isn't he? He can't find the space, Yafai. Still, a great effort
:26:19. > :26:27.from Yafai against the favourite Cuban. There's the bell to conclude
:26:28. > :26:31.this second-round bout in the 49 kilograms light flyweight division.
:26:32. > :26:35.Argilagos, the number one seed and number one ranked boxer in the
:26:36. > :26:41.world, the reigning world champion won the first two rounds. Judges a
:26:42. > :26:46.and B after two rounds, it was split, one round of 19 apiece. Given
:26:47. > :26:53.that status going into the third and final round, one suspects Yafai's
:26:54. > :26:57.Olympics is going to come to an end. He needed a big round and he
:26:58. > :27:02.probably hasn't done enough. It has been a great experience and given
:27:03. > :27:05.this fellow, this might be the hardest fight he will have in the
:27:06. > :27:10.tournament. It's a shame it's happened in the second round. That
:27:11. > :27:14.warranted a semifinal or final because you've got the two best
:27:15. > :27:18.boxers at this weight, we are watching them now. That is the luck
:27:19. > :27:24.of the draw in the Olympic tournament. 22 boxers contesting
:27:25. > :27:29.this light flyweight division. So, boxers will have to box as many as
:27:30. > :27:33.five times for the final on the 14th of August. One of the changes and
:27:34. > :27:37.fermented since London 2012. The final is not taking place over the
:27:38. > :27:41.course of the final week. They are sprinkled throughout. Let's get the
:27:42. > :27:43.announcement and the conclusion of this bout in the 49 kilo light
:27:44. > :28:05.flyweight. So, Argilagos, the tournament number
:28:06. > :28:12.one seed, the reigning world champion goes through after a
:28:13. > :28:18.hard-fought split decision over Yafai, whose older brother was
:28:19. > :28:21.eliminated by a Cuban in his Olympic appearance in Beijing eight years
:28:22. > :28:27.ago. A similar fate has befallen Galal Yafai as he is eliminated by
:28:28. > :28:32.the world number one. He put forth a terrific effort, denied on a split
:28:33. > :28:36.decision to the world number one. It was a tremendous display from Yafai.
:28:37. > :28:41.Taking the current world champion to a split. Very close indeed, there is
:28:42. > :28:49.only a point in it, so all credit to him, I am so proud of him, Galal
:28:50. > :28:52.Yafai. Well done, son. So, the Olympic experience of young Yafai
:28:53. > :28:58.ends in the second round. He made a bit of history, the first man since
:28:59. > :29:01.Moscow 1980 to compete without a head guard in Olympic competition
:29:02. > :29:07.when he opened the tournament with his victory over Cameroonian on the
:29:08. > :29:12.6th of August. Here in the second round over Cuba's Maestro,
:29:13. > :29:17.Argilagos, Yafai has been eliminated and the world number one goes on to
:29:18. > :29:21.the quarterfinals. Disappointing. Absolutely no
:29:22. > :29:28.disgrace at all for Galal Yafai. One heck of a fight and beautifully
:29:29. > :29:32.called. It came too early. It was worthy of seeing in a semifinal or a
:29:33. > :29:36.final but I'm afraid he's gone and when you look at the draw, it has
:29:37. > :29:42.been particularly unkind to about six I'd say of the 12 boxers in the
:29:43. > :29:46.British team, so it's going to be tough for some of these fighters in
:29:47. > :29:50.the coming days. We are going back and forward all over the place here
:29:51. > :30:00.on this third day of the real Olympics. We saw Gemma Tattersall up
:30:01. > :30:04.against in the cross-country. It is a tough course. Two-time penalties.
:30:05. > :30:07.Let's hear her thoughts on the cause. She said, you needed to wear
:30:08. > :30:22.a series of pants to compete. Did you feel anything before the
:30:23. > :30:28.fourth quarter, that she might not be onside today? I think she
:30:29. > :30:32.slightly frightened herself and then she ran a bit blind to fence four
:30:33. > :30:38.and I lost my steering and couldn't quite get to the B element or the
:30:39. > :30:41.last element. It frightened her a little bit. Then she went very
:30:42. > :30:48.careful and a bit green on me and a bit scared. Then it's sort of talk
:30:49. > :30:53.all my coaxing ability to get her around and she finished up better
:30:54. > :30:56.than she started actually. It is such a difficult course because
:30:57. > :31:01.people are trying to take the longer route but it means you will get time
:31:02. > :31:04.penalties. What is the secret to this course? What information will
:31:05. > :31:10.you be taking back to the rest of your team? Quick look five is quite
:31:11. > :31:17.a young horse and I think some of the more experienced horses will be
:31:18. > :31:28.fine around this course. I think I will just be telling them as much as
:31:29. > :31:35.I can so they have the most ability. It is never easy going out first.
:31:36. > :31:38.Definitely not. STUDIO: She will pass on that information gleaned
:31:39. > :31:44.from the course to the other riders. We will be going back in about half
:31:45. > :31:48.an hour. We are heading for the judo mat now. We have seen Ashley
:31:49. > :31:55.McKenzie and Colin Oates go out for Great Britain. We have the first of
:31:56. > :32:02.the women competitors today. If you don't know your ones are as from
:32:03. > :32:14.your Rippon, let's remind you of the finer points of judo.
:32:15. > :32:22.Judo was invented in the late 19th century in Japan. Each contest in
:32:23. > :32:28.judo has a duration of five minutes that men or four for women. The
:32:29. > :32:33.scores are level at the end of the contest, they enter golden score
:32:34. > :32:38.where there is no time limit and the first penalty awarded will decide
:32:39. > :32:55.the contest. The high-risk Delhi highest scoring technique is an
:32:56. > :33:14.Ippon. When an opponent submits or gives up... Holding down an opponent
:33:15. > :33:23.for 16 seconds or more but less than 20 seconds.
:33:24. > :33:31.Judo is a knockout competition and all competitors are based in a
:33:32. > :33:35.drawer divided into two tables. The top eight athletes in each weight
:33:36. > :33:38.category will be seeded in line with their world rankings and the two
:33:39. > :33:49.finalists will compete for the gold and silver medals. A 57 kilo
:33:50. > :33:52.category. She is already the reigning Commonwealth Games champion
:33:53. > :33:56.and she makes her Olympic debut today. This fighter took up the
:33:57. > :34:00.sport for self defence, she said and before she was given lottery
:34:01. > :34:05.funding, she had two jobs just to keep her dream alive of coming to
:34:06. > :34:09.the Olympic Games. She fulfils that ambition today and she will have as
:34:10. > :34:25.an opponent and Australian. We are ready to go, it is Austria in
:34:26. > :34:30.blue, Great Britain in white. Fantastic story. European champion,
:34:31. > :34:31.former European champion, European medallist, medals almost at every
:34:32. > :34:45.Grand Slam. Smythe Davis is a brilliant
:34:46. > :34:52.competitor and getting better and better at every competition. She has
:34:53. > :34:59.a different build. You can see the line of frame, she has all of that
:35:00. > :35:01.height and that is why she can fight in this 57 kilograms division and
:35:02. > :35:13.fight to really well. She took home a bronze medal in
:35:14. > :35:18.Egypt, so two bronze medals for those eight attempts, if you like,
:35:19. > :35:22.at World Championship level. She is capable. She had some really good
:35:23. > :35:28.moves on the ground. She has a set move that she does so Smythe Davis
:35:29. > :35:32.will have to be careful of that. Smythe Davis just walked out of the
:35:33. > :35:40.area, so she has to be more careful on the edge as well. Big right arm,
:35:41. > :35:49.she needs in order to do her attack. Look at that. She actually went
:35:50. > :35:53.right the way underneath. With a shoulder throw. This is where she
:35:54. > :36:02.has to be careful. She gets a Waza-ari for it. Filzmoser now onto
:36:03. > :36:14.the ground. Can she get this? This could possibly be very dangerous
:36:15. > :36:26.for... The Waza-ari has been changed to a Yuko. That was absolutely
:36:27. > :36:29.brilliant. The resistance that came from Filzmoser and Smythe Davis
:36:30. > :36:36.somehow able to get on top of that. That was incredible. That is where
:36:37. > :36:47.she has to be very careful of this lady because this lady has a couple
:36:48. > :36:53.of set moves and she does very well. Yuko ahead and she is willing to
:36:54. > :37:00.attack on the ground but she doesn't want to be attacked. The difference
:37:01. > :37:04.being is that the Yuko is on the side, upper part of the body from
:37:05. > :37:10.the side so any part of the body that hits the ground, a Waza ari is
:37:11. > :37:20.given for anything that rolls onto the points of the shoulder. Not
:37:21. > :37:26.quite got the force of an Ippon. And Ippon is forced on the points of the
:37:27. > :37:34.shoulders. These two crashing onto the mat. Absolutely, it is a good
:37:35. > :37:45.technical fight. Smythe Davis just ahead with that Yuko. They are
:37:46. > :37:49.really going for it in Russia. The 23-year-old Smythe Davis knows what
:37:50. > :37:54.she is doing. She is looking to waste as much time I think, rather
:37:55. > :38:00.than trying to get her holding down. Good tactics while you are on top.
:38:01. > :38:05.Purposely tried to waste as much time as you can if you have got a
:38:06. > :38:06.good hold or a good move on the ground, then you go for it
:38:07. > :38:21.specifically. Filzmoser won't give up, she will
:38:22. > :38:25.keep coming forward. She has got plenty of strength. Has she got
:38:26. > :38:34.enough to get through the last 34 seconds? Another good score. A Waza
:38:35. > :38:44.ari this time to Smythe Davis. Two really good scores. One Waza ari,
:38:45. > :38:47.one Yuko. She is giving away experience and height but giving
:38:48. > :38:53.away nothing on the score board, Smythe Davis. She has plenty of
:38:54. > :38:58.spirit and gumption. We can see that. She's not wanting to back
:38:59. > :39:07.away, she wants to continue to go harder. Only a certain position
:39:08. > :39:12.Filzmoser can do on the ground. I think she will probably retire after
:39:13. > :39:18.this Olympic Games. Smythe Davis did a really good job. Technically and
:39:19. > :39:23.tactically, everything right. She got two really good scores. She
:39:24. > :39:27.never looked in danger. Just that one time on the ground. A little
:39:28. > :39:30.bit, stayed there a little bit too long, but any other time on the
:39:31. > :39:38.ground, it was her initiating the technique.
:39:39. > :39:47.Great change of direction and you could see that she rolls onto her
:39:48. > :39:51.shoulders and gets the Waza ari. Lovely change of direction. We have
:39:52. > :39:59.always said she needs something over the other flank. An excellent bout,
:40:00. > :40:07.that, and now official Great Britain, the victory. And Smythe
:40:08. > :40:12.Davis continues on to the round of 16.
:40:13. > :40:19.STUDIO: She does indeed and she will continue in the next hour we
:40:20. > :40:25.believe. Next up for her is team-mate Ashley McKenzie's fiance
:40:26. > :40:30.of France. She took the bronze in this category in 2012 so maybe a few
:40:31. > :40:35.split loyalties for Ashley today! In the tennis, it has been eventful so
:40:36. > :40:39.far. Venus Williams has gone out of the singles and the Williams sisters
:40:40. > :40:45.remarkably and unexpectedly go out of the doubles. We saw Novak
:40:46. > :40:51.Djokovic beaten for the second time in a row by Juan Martin Del Potro. I
:40:52. > :40:54.think he was in tears after that, was not happy about going home
:40:55. > :40:58.because he really wants to win a gold medal, one of the few things
:40:59. > :41:02.that has eluded him in his career. The Murray brothers involved in a
:41:03. > :41:09.real thriller last night, it went on really late. The Brazilians had lost
:41:10. > :41:12.the first set... The Britons had lost the first set and it was very
:41:13. > :41:20.tense and a tie-breaker in the second.
:41:21. > :42:01.Yes! The presence of mind to play that. Just not enough on it.
:42:02. > :42:36.That was a really clever shot into the space. Match point number four.
:42:37. > :43:55.Having saved four match points, it is now set point for Great Britain.
:43:56. > :44:36.Lightning reflexes. A mistake in the end from Andy Murray.
:44:37. > :44:39.cause. She said, you needed to wear a series of pants to compete.
:44:40. > :44:56.It was probably going out, the previous shot. I think the call came
:44:57. > :45:24.too late. Match point to number five.
:45:25. > :45:46.202 kilometres, out wide. Character stuff from Andy Murray.
:45:47. > :46:25.The first ace of the match saves match point. The fifth match point.
:46:26. > :46:58.Bellucci, out wide and it is set point number two.
:46:59. > :47:06.Oh, Sa again. The deaf to stuff touches in this crucial moment.
:47:07. > :47:22.Could not have placed it better. So, we've had five match points. We
:47:23. > :47:39.have had two set points for Great Britain.
:47:40. > :47:48.Bellucci just could not get hold of that. Murray firing attacked him.
:47:49. > :47:55.Set point Great Britain but on the break serve now.
:47:56. > :48:31.And it will be Jamie Murray to serve.
:48:32. > :48:44.Oh! Bellucci launching himself time after time at the ball, but, in the
:48:45. > :48:55.end, it is Sa who makes the crucial move. This is macho stuff. A third
:48:56. > :49:22.set point goes astray. It is an ace. What a time to produce
:49:23. > :49:29.it. They've produced two in the tie-break.
:49:30. > :49:59.Here is set point number four for Great Britain.
:50:00. > :50:16.No, it is just out. And it is 12-12. Once more, they will turn around.
:50:17. > :50:25.Andy hit the shot, he thought it was going to be good enough. A lot of
:50:26. > :50:27.the crowd feared it would be. He hit it almost too well. About a foot
:50:28. > :50:35.long. Just shy of two hours they've been
:50:36. > :50:51.going. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
:50:52. > :52:02.So, a six match point for Brazil. Oh! What a shot from Murray! He has
:52:03. > :52:06.got an exquisite touch. Britain never needed it more than in that
:52:07. > :52:13.point. Look at that, full stretch a couple of times. The return with a
:52:14. > :52:37.single hand, fantastic! 13 apiece. There is going to be a challenge. It
:52:38. > :52:44.looked like it might have been out, to be honest.
:52:45. > :52:53.The ball was called in, and it was in!
:52:54. > :53:17.So, again, this is set point number five.
:53:18. > :53:24.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Cool as you like, Bellucci at the
:53:25. > :53:50.net. Hammering at to the Jamie forehand.
:53:51. > :54:48.Match point number seven. Oh, what a way to win! The net makes
:54:49. > :54:55.the crucial intervention. A wonderful doubles match. And it is a
:54:56. > :55:04.shame it should end like that after an epic tie-break. The Murrays could
:55:05. > :55:10.not have done more. In the end, joy right around this Olympic Tennis
:55:11. > :55:17.Centre. Thomaz Bellucci and Andre Sara, a heroic performance.
:55:18. > :55:21.It was. It was a brilliant win for the Brazilian pair and the Murray
:55:22. > :55:25.brothers came here as a second seed, so it was a superb night for the
:55:26. > :55:31.host country. And the marches on in the singles. Great shame for Jamie
:55:32. > :55:35.but he has the consolation of a Davis cup victory last year if he's
:55:36. > :55:39.feeling down today. We're not sure if Andy will compete in the mixed
:55:40. > :55:43.doubles, it is likely he will, being a silver-medallist last time in
:55:44. > :55:47.London but that will be confirmed later in the week. So, that is the
:55:48. > :55:53.situation last night. This evening we are hoping for better things in
:55:54. > :55:56.the gymnastics because four years ago, Max Whitlock and company, they
:55:57. > :56:02.took the bronze medal. It happen to have been the first team medal in
:56:03. > :56:04.gymnastics for a full century. Now, can they swing and upgrade here in
:56:05. > :56:10.Rio? Repetition. It is an art. Day in,
:56:11. > :56:39.day out. Eat. Sleep. Train. Repeat. Mastering skills... Building your
:56:40. > :56:48.strength... There are no short cuts. They say practice makes perfect. And
:56:49. > :56:56.it's true. This is about fine tuning, precision... But, most of
:56:57. > :57:00.all, it's about passion. That's what drives you to be better, gives you
:57:01. > :57:09.the strength to go again... And again. So, you keep going. Until
:57:10. > :57:20.you're ready to deliver. When it really counts. That is the art of
:57:21. > :57:23.repetition. I am looking forward to that and I'm sure you are, too, this
:57:24. > :57:29.evening. Were looking forward to an awful lot on day three. It was
:57:30. > :57:34.supposed to be yesterday that Glover and stunning work going for gold.
:57:35. > :57:40.They should have been out on the water but it was given up because of
:57:41. > :57:45.the weather conditions. They've kept their powder dry until today. Half
:57:46. > :57:50.an hour until we see the pair in revving unbeaten in five years, 36
:57:51. > :58:05.races. They are the team to beat in Rio. Great Britain are Olympic
:58:06. > :58:10.champions! Glover, Stanning, we stand up and salute you! Good
:58:11. > :58:17.morning, thank you for letting me come along so early and disturb you.
:58:18. > :58:23.You look so bright and breezy, this is what you do every day. Yes, early
:58:24. > :58:27.mornings are normal and it is great to have you along. We will show you
:58:28. > :58:34.what is a normal day for us. This is a fantastic place. Fantastic
:58:35. > :58:41.facility. Where are we off to? Were going to go to the gym first. So,
:58:42. > :58:46.everybody is in here, they come in here, have a stretch before they go
:58:47. > :58:54.out. Is this a social stretch? Yes, a bit of a chat and social stretch.
:58:55. > :59:01.Do you ever still come in and feel stiff? Yes, quite often. If we have
:59:02. > :59:05.had a big session, the next day we will come in, legs or arms,
:59:06. > :59:08.everything will be hurting from the previous day. These machines are
:59:09. > :59:15.something you never want to be told you are on. Six days a week, this
:59:16. > :59:24.regime. Sometimes seven. Six mostly. Then on a Sunday we train as well.
:59:25. > :59:28.We get a day off every 3-6 weeks. When you talk about success at the
:59:29. > :59:31.Olympics, what is up here is the important thing. It is whether you
:59:32. > :59:35.can switch it on at the right time and get the best out of each other
:59:36. > :59:41.and perform when you have to perform. Be tougher to do in Rio
:59:42. > :59:42.2016 because they are undefeated Olympic champions, Olympic
:59:43. > :59:46.champions, world champions, European champions, they hold all the
:59:47. > :59:52.records. It would be a shock if they didn't win gold. It would be, yeah.
:59:53. > :59:56.They found a level of consistency and contentment with each other
:59:57. > :00:00.inside and outside of the boat which makes them formidable. How easy is
:00:01. > :00:05.it to make sure you stay on the same page in terms of your goals and
:00:06. > :00:09.aspirations? We find it easy because we complement each other. If we were
:00:10. > :00:14.two of the same, it would be very difficult. I think I'm probably more
:00:15. > :00:20.energetic in my delivery of things. And kind of quite focused. I drive a
:00:21. > :00:24.lot of the things we do and Heather absorbs a lot of it. From the
:00:25. > :00:28.outside, you might think you're about to become a major in the army
:00:29. > :00:35.so you might be the one who would be much more noisy and are you like
:00:36. > :00:39.that? I am not your typical army officer. I am a bit more stand back
:00:40. > :00:50.and observe. When you drive out of those gates,
:00:51. > :00:54.are you in touch with each other or are your lives separate? We are
:00:55. > :01:02.probably in touch too much! Normally I need to remind header of something
:01:03. > :01:06.and so we will text. We are friends away from this environment as well
:01:07. > :01:11.so we can leave rowing behind and go and do something as friends. It is
:01:12. > :01:17.not all about the rowing. It is ours from hard work from us but also our
:01:18. > :01:21.friends and family. Once you are an Olympian, you always are. It is who
:01:22. > :01:27.we are and what we have worked so hard for. With London, it was great
:01:28. > :01:35.and an experience we never expected to have in our lifetime. To go and
:01:36. > :01:38.win gold in our lifetime. You step onto the plane and off the plane in
:01:39. > :01:44.a different country and you represent that name on your back and
:01:45. > :01:49.that is the version you have grown up with. The opportunity to go and
:01:50. > :01:53.do that is really special. There is this version I have had since I was
:01:54. > :01:57.at school. We certainly haven't forgotten that triumph on day five
:01:58. > :02:04.in London. That started the gold rush. We have never been able to
:02:05. > :02:09.forget it, each time they put a letter in their golden postbox, they
:02:10. > :02:16.think of that pair. They are very proud of those two citizens. We will
:02:17. > :02:21.see them on the water shortly. We have seen Galal Yafai go out to a
:02:22. > :02:25.very good Cuban in the boxing. We will get his reaction to that
:02:26. > :02:31.contest. Not the results you would have wanted but are you happy you
:02:32. > :02:38.gave a good account of yourself? I am gutted. I know I am as good as
:02:39. > :02:46.him. It is no good. What did you put it down to? It was a close fight. I
:02:47. > :02:54.thought I won. I did my best. You thought you did enough? Yes. It is
:02:55. > :03:00.one of those, it is just boxing. Can you take any positives from this? I
:03:01. > :03:08.know you are disappointed now but just one point in it. No positives
:03:09. > :03:15.really, just all negative. Widdy go from here? Just have a rest and
:03:16. > :03:24.support the rest of the boys. It has been great. Take care.
:03:25. > :03:28.Understandably disappointed. But he can be proud of that performance and
:03:29. > :03:33.I am sure reflect on it in a more positive light in a few hours when
:03:34. > :03:39.he has let it sink in. This flyweight division is packed and we
:03:40. > :03:45.have Paddy Barnes of Ireland and we are about to see him live. Of all
:03:46. > :03:51.B20 Olympic medals won by Ireland, 16 of them have been in boxing and
:03:52. > :03:58.seven of them have been in the last games and several of them have been
:03:59. > :04:09.won by Paddy. He is getting a bit fed up of being called Paddy Brauns.
:04:10. > :04:17.Paddy about to come into the boxing ring.
:04:18. > :04:55.About in London, the semifinal, many people Portpatrick barns -- many
:04:56. > :05:07.people thought Patrick Bamford Mike was unlucky.
:05:08. > :05:16.He is the number four seed in the tournament. He really psyched
:05:17. > :05:21.himself up. He has got a bronze medal in his previous tournament.
:05:22. > :05:30.Paddy Barnes has already says, he doesn't want to be referred to as
:05:31. > :05:38.Paddy bronze. He wants to step up to gold. This is his moment. He is a
:05:39. > :05:51.good boxer. He always adapts really well, Paddy Barnes.
:05:52. > :06:02.The Irish boxing teams Areem 's trust as Paddy Barnes appears to
:06:03. > :06:12.make his first appearance in Rio 2016.
:06:13. > :06:22.We are underway. The man wearing red has come out very quickly indeed,
:06:23. > :06:28.driving Paddy Barnes backwards. He is Samuel Carmona Heredia, of Spain.
:06:29. > :06:33.His opponent, the vast Lee experienced, reigning two time
:06:34. > :06:39.bronze-medallist, Paddy Barnes. Just helped himself to a wonderful right
:06:40. > :06:44.hand to the body. He has that determination and ambition to
:06:45. > :06:49.improve his standing. In the Olympic boxing tournament, to improve on the
:06:50. > :06:54.two bronzes he has come away with in the last Olympic Games. Targeting
:06:55. > :06:59.that body effectively, Paddy Barnes. I think he is doing that because he
:07:00. > :07:05.knows that Samuel Carmona Heredia uses the ring space very well and
:07:06. > :07:11.moves. You have to target the body. Hit him and hurt him downstairs and
:07:12. > :07:18.that will make him do his better work when his opponent holds his
:07:19. > :07:23.feet a bit more. Paddy Barnes driving the retreating Samuel
:07:24. > :07:29.Carmona Heredia back even further. Paddy Barnes one of nine boxes to be
:07:30. > :07:33.bestowed with the privilege of being flag-bearers in the opening ceremony
:07:34. > :07:36.a few days ago. A good right-hander around the corner from Samuel
:07:37. > :07:41.Carmona Heredia. Paddy Barnes came back with the same shot. The trouble
:07:42. > :07:49.Samuel Carmona Heredia will have here against Barnes, failing to hit
:07:50. > :07:53.the target because the hands of Paddy Barnes a very high and he
:07:54. > :07:59.clever ad block blocking shots. Samuel Carmona Heredia is swinging
:08:00. > :08:07.wildly, because those hands of Paddy Barnes a very high. Barnes is so
:08:08. > :08:11.confident in all facets of the boxing game. Effective at going
:08:12. > :08:18.backwards and forwards and moving side to side, laterally. Here ears
:08:19. > :08:22.at demonstrating his power fighting off the ropes but I suspect he won't
:08:23. > :08:30.want to keep to that confinement for too long. Hands held high by Samuel
:08:31. > :08:35.Carmona Heredia. But he did manage to penetrate the guard. A left hand
:08:36. > :08:42.by Samuel Carmona Heredia. Terrific right hand to the body from Barnes.
:08:43. > :08:51.Now on top of the logo, commanding centre ring.
:08:52. > :08:57.Both boxers keeping their hands liked when in punching range but
:08:58. > :09:00.when they move away and relax a little bit, they are dropping their
:09:01. > :09:04.hands and maybe that is when both of them should think about launching an
:09:05. > :09:13.attack, when their opponents move away. They could both benefit of
:09:14. > :09:19.just jumping on their opponents. I think Paddy Barnes has taken it
:09:20. > :09:29.funny. An action packed three minutes to begin this light
:09:30. > :09:36.flyweight contest. Samuel Carmona Heredia with a lot of shops but a
:09:37. > :09:40.lot missing the target. Paddy Barnes seemed very happy at the end of the
:09:41. > :09:45.round, because he had a couple of good shots towards the end.
:09:46. > :09:51.Switching there, from body to head, just gets caught there and replies
:09:52. > :09:59.with a left hook. Have a look at these scores. There you go. Samuel
:10:00. > :10:08.Carmona Heredia has taken it for judges A and B but judge C favouring
:10:09. > :10:18.Barnes. That surprises me a little bit. To the second round. Paddy
:10:19. > :10:22.Barnes, experienced man from Ireland, has come out really with
:10:23. > :10:26.aggressive intent. A good left hook to the body and then a right hook to
:10:27. > :10:33.the head. Paddy Barnes stopped momentarily. Coming onto the front
:10:34. > :10:38.foot, Paddy Barnes, having conceded that opening round. Greater urgency
:10:39. > :10:42.from the work of the man in blue. Holding his hands a lot higher but
:10:43. > :10:49.closing the gap down, looking for threes and fours. Bent arm shots
:10:50. > :10:58.now. Probably been told he is behind. Effectively, shots to the
:10:59. > :11:03.body, sinking in those hawks, just above the belt line, Paddy Barnes.
:11:04. > :11:09.Now, Samuel Carmona Heredia being drawn into a flat-footed exchange.
:11:10. > :11:14.Terrific shots to the body once again from Paddy Barnes. I think
:11:15. > :11:16.Barnes is getting the better of the exchanges, throwing threes and
:11:17. > :11:24.fours. Better work from the Irishman. Cracking left hook around
:11:25. > :11:29.the corner. This is an absolute firefight right on top of the logo
:11:30. > :11:34.on centre ring. Barnes retreating to the ropes but still space in the
:11:35. > :11:40.ring. Both boxers trading blows, trying to type up tightly to repel
:11:41. > :11:44.the counters of their opponents. Both have a similar style but if you
:11:45. > :11:48.look at Samuel Carmona Heredia, his defence is a little more leaky than
:11:49. > :11:55.Barnes. Barnes has his elbows tucked in. He was also doing threes and
:11:56. > :12:01.fours rather than the single shots. Samuel Carmona Heredia trying to get
:12:02. > :12:05.through with the heavier punches. Samuel Carmona Heredia qualified for
:12:06. > :12:10.this, his first appearance in the Olympic Games. He finished second
:12:11. > :12:13.place in the global Olympic qualification tournament. Paddy
:12:14. > :12:18.Barnes, what seemed like an age ago, qualified, the number one boxer in
:12:19. > :12:26.the fifth season of world Series boxing.
:12:27. > :12:33.He has had his status as an Olympian secured for the third time for a
:12:34. > :12:38.very long time. He hasn't competed in global or Continental tournaments
:12:39. > :12:43.since the Commonwealth Games in 2014, where he picked up his second
:12:44. > :12:48.title. Her years in the opening bout of his Olympic 2016 campaign in a
:12:49. > :12:52.really hard-fought encounter against Samuel Carmona Heredia. Good left
:12:53. > :12:55.hook from the inside from the man in red. Bringing back some punches from
:12:56. > :12:59.Barnes but many of them were blocked. Samuel Carmona Heredia
:13:00. > :13:07.needing a bit more head movement here. He has got to move his head.
:13:08. > :13:10.He was waiting for the referee to say something then, makes a mistake
:13:11. > :13:19.and Samuel Carmona Heredia lands his shot. The opening round was split,
:13:20. > :13:22.two judges favouring the work of Samuel Carmona Heredia, judge C
:13:23. > :13:30.favouring Barnes. How will they score this second round? Sucking in
:13:31. > :13:35.the air. Paddy Barnes feeling it a little bit but he put a lot of work
:13:36. > :13:41.in here. Good right hand from Barnes, and a good jab from Samuel
:13:42. > :13:45.Carmona Heredia. Barnes gritting his teeth, digging in deep. Twos and
:13:46. > :13:54.threes and I think he has done the better work in that round. It is all
:13:55. > :14:00.square across all three cards because Judges A and B favour Barnes
:14:01. > :14:04.in this round and judge C favoured Samuel Carmona Heredia. A reverse of
:14:05. > :14:12.the first round. It is tied, one round appease. Bath apiece.
:14:13. > :14:19.Who will progress through to the final eight of the men's 49
:14:20. > :14:22.kilograms light flyweight tournament? It will all come down to
:14:23. > :14:27.this three minutes. Everything to be laid on the line by these two
:14:28. > :14:30.boxers. Paddy Barnes breezing through an open mouth but he comes
:14:31. > :14:36.on the front foot and takes it to his man. Both boxers trying to find
:14:37. > :14:43.an opening between the defence is being put up. That is goodbye
:14:44. > :14:47.Barnes. In this situation, you have to try to make you opponent missed
:14:48. > :14:54.the target. You need head movement here and there, show the judges you
:14:55. > :14:59.are prepared to use those defensive skills. That bobbing and weaving and
:15:00. > :15:03.slipping and then returning fire with two and three shots. Very
:15:04. > :15:04.important to try to make your opponent missed with some good
:15:05. > :15:22.defensive work. Cracking right hook. Good right hook
:15:23. > :15:30.in response from Carmona. All action stuff here in the space of the
:15:31. > :15:33.boxing ring. They will be aware of how close this contest is which is
:15:34. > :15:40.why they are letting it all hang out in pursuit of a place in the final
:15:41. > :15:45.eight of the men's quarterfinal. This is a contest that is going to
:15:46. > :15:50.take a lot of energy out of both of these boxes, whoever goes through.
:15:51. > :15:53.You don't want to be boxing like this every time. Very difficult at
:15:54. > :15:58.this pace and you have to be extremely fit. This is what is
:15:59. > :16:04.required because this bout is as close as could be. There is parity
:16:05. > :16:09.across the board. The judges can't separate the two, somebody needs a
:16:10. > :16:14.grandstand finish here. Is that Nick on the right eye after Barnes? Does
:16:15. > :16:19.not appear to be peaking but there is a graze of some description. Good
:16:20. > :16:24.left hook from Carmona, good left hook from Barnes in response. Barnes
:16:25. > :16:28.has to push his opponent back a little bit more. Carmona keeps
:16:29. > :16:34.coming forward. Oh, that is a good right hand from Barnes. Just
:16:35. > :16:39.momentarily, Carmona's boxing stance betrayed him but he got back into it
:16:40. > :16:46.and they are continuing to let their hands go freely. The final 30
:16:47. > :16:51.seconds of what been a pulsating 49 kilograms light flyweight encounter.
:16:52. > :16:54.Some of those judges like to see the opponent being pushed back, they
:16:55. > :16:58.like to see the box on the front foot. Carmona, he knows it as well
:16:59. > :17:09.which is why he keeps coming forward. Give and take, NIP and tax
:17:10. > :17:13.-- nip and tuck. Both of these men have given absolutely everything in
:17:14. > :17:18.pursuit of a place in the quarterfinals in the men's 49
:17:19. > :17:21.kilograms light flyweight division. What an absolutely riveting contest
:17:22. > :17:25.we have witnessed. It was all square. One round of peace, 19
:17:26. > :17:35.points apiece going into the third and final round. Carmona has the
:17:36. > :17:42.energy to celebrate, Barnes has his gloves taken. This contest could
:17:43. > :17:48.come down to the last punch. Lovely punch from Barnes, but Carmona
:17:49. > :17:52.landed some belters. Right at the end of the contest, some good
:17:53. > :17:56.punches. Barnes rattled his opponent time and again in that last round,
:17:57. > :18:07.it is very close. This could go either way. Which way will it go? A
:18:08. > :18:11.thrilling nine minutes of action we've just witnessed, nonstop
:18:12. > :18:18.punching from both of these boxers. Nervous moments now. Prior to this
:18:19. > :18:22.announcement, both of these boxers must feel as though the standing
:18:23. > :18:30.beneath an emotional guillotine. Who will have their hand raised, and
:18:31. > :18:36.will progress to the final late? -- final eight? Barnes gesticulating
:18:37. > :18:41.its close, we don't know how close it is.
:18:42. > :19:05.Carmona Heredia! It is Carmona, are courtesy of a split decision, in a
:19:06. > :19:10.terrifically, keenly contested contest. He eliminates the
:19:11. > :19:18.tournament number four seed, and Ireland's flag bearer, Paddy Barnes.
:19:19. > :19:22.His dream of an impact gold has been extinguished at his first outing in
:19:23. > :19:28.Rio 2016. Carmona goes through to the final late, Paddy Barnes
:19:29. > :19:34.eliminated in a contest that was as close as could be. 2-1 in favour of
:19:35. > :19:38.the Spaniard. Paddy Barnes eliminated in this, his third
:19:39. > :19:43.Olympic Games, at the second preliminary round stage.
:19:44. > :19:52.Ireland's Talisman has gone. That is a sore one. A real surprise for the
:19:53. > :19:56.man who carried the standard into the opening ceremony, the trickle,
:19:57. > :20:01.the other night. You could see the surprise from some of his
:20:02. > :20:06.supporters. The boy from Belfast is out. I'm sure there's been better
:20:07. > :20:13.news for Ireland at least down at the rowing. I know you're in capture
:20:14. > :20:19.mode, what is going on? About an hour or so ago, the wind has got up
:20:20. > :20:21.a bit so conditions are a little bit more testing and several British
:20:22. > :20:26.voter been on the water over the course of the last 75 minutes or so.
:20:27. > :20:29.Let's start with the men's double sculls which was disappointing a
:20:30. > :20:33.couple of days ago which forced them into a repechage about half an hour
:20:34. > :20:38.or so ago, and this is how they got on.
:20:39. > :20:47.Great Britain and Serbia starting to break away from Cuba and Bulgaria.
:20:48. > :20:55.Cuba have gone out well, they're managing to hold on. To be honest, I
:20:56. > :20:59.think a lot of it for the next two or three minutes will determine how
:21:00. > :21:03.the British guys are doing. I'd like to give them the confidence they
:21:04. > :21:08.will progress to the semifinal. And they need to start clawing back the
:21:09. > :21:12.Serbians because they wouldn't have been troubled by them earlier in the
:21:13. > :21:16.season. They might not be the best form but they can regain their form
:21:17. > :21:24.in this race. Last time Serbia and Great Britain came head-to-head was
:21:25. > :21:26.at the last World Regatta. Serbia finished six and Britain finished
:21:27. > :21:32.second. They are turning the tables here. This is in the mid-part of the
:21:33. > :21:36.competition but nonetheless it is important to qualify strongly for
:21:37. > :21:44.the best lane you can possibly get in the semifinal. The Serbians are
:21:45. > :21:49.starting to inch out, which is not an encouraging thing because this is
:21:50. > :21:55.one of the crew is challenging to get into the final. Our boys have
:21:56. > :22:03.the pedigree, as you said, in the last World Cup, to dominate these
:22:04. > :22:14.lads. So, Serbia in lane number three. We had now... They are
:22:15. > :22:18.starting to hold and head back now. So, this repechage of the men's
:22:19. > :22:23.double sculls, the British at the halfway mark, they were comfortably
:22:24. > :22:28.in second away from Cuba, it is all about getting positions for the
:22:29. > :22:34.semifinals. Three boats go through. Cuba in one, Bulgaria into, Serbia
:22:35. > :22:39.in three, Great Britain now coming up level, and we'd expect the
:22:40. > :22:46.British double sculls of John Collins and Jonathan Walton to ease
:22:47. > :22:53.through the here. On paper, they have the better pedigree. Serbia was
:22:54. > :22:55.sixth at the World Cup, and Alterman Collins was second. They finished
:22:56. > :23:06.the Olympia before they came here on the highest note they could possibly
:23:07. > :23:13.could do. They are going to get Serbia. Can Cuba hold off Bulgaria?
:23:14. > :23:18.I hope they do because they shouldn't be qualifying for the
:23:19. > :23:25.semifinal. It's going to come down to a sprint finish, and that sprint
:23:26. > :23:30.finish might catch the Serbians. Our boys are now controlling it. And
:23:31. > :23:34.they should take this confidence the semi. Bulgaria coming back card
:23:35. > :23:40.against Cuba. The British and know they have this. Here come Bulgaria,
:23:41. > :23:44.they are coming like a rocket through the field. They are now
:23:45. > :23:48.through Cuba and they are now attacking Serbia. Coming towards the
:23:49. > :23:52.last couple of strokes of this repechage comfortably done, well
:23:53. > :24:00.done Great Britain, Jonathan Walton and Collins, and it is a photo
:24:01. > :24:08.finish between Bulgarian Serbia. They are through to the semifinal.
:24:09. > :24:14.What is the overriding emotion after that much improved performance?
:24:15. > :24:17.We're just pleased we secured that place and the all-important
:24:18. > :24:21.semifinal. And it is doing what we do now tomorrow and putting in
:24:22. > :24:25.another good performance and trying to get into that final. How do you
:24:26. > :24:31.rationalise the performance of a couple of days ago? We knew we'd
:24:32. > :24:35.made a few mistakes. And the middle part of the race, where we worked
:24:36. > :24:38.very well together, we didn't really get onto anything, just lost a lot
:24:39. > :24:42.of momentum, where is out there today, even though it was still
:24:43. > :24:47.popping and a little bit of a challenge, it was a lot more relaxed
:24:48. > :24:51.and calm, and sticking to what we do well and what we have done over the
:24:52. > :24:56.last few weeks. Steve Redgrave is here as ever. How impressed were you
:24:57. > :25:00.by the way they recovered from what was a disappointing performance 48
:25:01. > :25:04.hours ago? I wasn't impressed with their first heat. The conditions
:25:05. > :25:15.they had, they had to attack the first 500, get into their rhythm.
:25:16. > :25:19.They got caught out. Juergen was disappointed, he wouldn't talk to me
:25:20. > :25:23.about it, he closed his eyes, and trotted off. That was a much better
:25:24. > :25:27.performance. Coming into the Regatta, they have the outside
:25:28. > :25:33.chance of a medal. They are moving back towards it. It is a lot of
:25:34. > :25:38.pressure because you have the heat waiting around yesterday for the
:25:39. > :25:41.non-racist, then racing again, and then a semifinal tomorrow. It is
:25:42. > :25:45.tough but they're going in the right direction. Talking about the medals,
:25:46. > :25:50.Matthew Pinsent has four. There are two of the aid that are going for
:25:51. > :25:54.three gold medals here. Pete Reed and Andrew Hodge. I spoke to them
:25:55. > :25:57.after their very impressive performance by the men's eight
:25:58. > :26:01.earlier today. They are eyeing up a gold medal, there's going to be a
:26:02. > :26:09.fantastic showdown with the Dutch and German is at the weekend. Andrew
:26:10. > :26:11.Hodge wasn't giving too much away when I asked him about how impressed
:26:12. > :26:21.he'd been by their performance earlier on. It was fine. No more
:26:22. > :26:27.than that? Net-mac, we did what we needed to do today. Could you be a
:26:28. > :26:30.little bit more upbeat than that? I felt strong, really strong. I know
:26:31. > :26:34.the crew did as well. I know there's more to come, so I think there will
:26:35. > :26:39.be people at home cheering and celebrating already. Don't celebrate
:26:40. > :26:44.already. The Germans are still the favourites and the Dutch will come
:26:45. > :26:49.back as well. We've seen from Regattas that things change during
:26:50. > :26:55.the week. I can be confident inside. But it isn't done yet. The next
:26:56. > :27:00.final will be tight, close and fears. The thing about heaps, you
:27:01. > :27:04.can put down markers. Everyone in the boat could see the Dutch in
:27:05. > :27:09.their slipstream. That is a huge point chalked up, isn't it? Yes,
:27:10. > :27:13.we've been working hard these last few months and we have a lot to turn
:27:14. > :27:17.around from where we left the World Cup series. We finished off with a
:27:18. > :27:22.good race, and we are confident we had more. We saw a glimmer of what
:27:23. > :27:26.we could have. As veterans of the Olympic movement, how is the Olympic
:27:27. > :27:32.experience for you here? You can say old! It really is amazing. There's a
:27:33. > :27:38.lot in the press back home about water quality and muggings and all
:27:39. > :27:42.sorts of horrible things in Rio but don't believe it. We are careful and
:27:43. > :27:47.sensible but we are here on business but we're having a good time. It is
:27:48. > :27:52.a wonderful city. The course, it is sometimes blowy which we saw
:27:53. > :27:56.yesterday, but it is an outdoor sport. We are fighters and it is a
:27:57. > :28:02.really good experience. And I cannot wait to race in the final and I am
:28:03. > :28:06.glad we made it without repechage. It is a great city and we are
:28:07. > :28:13.enjoying it. Dare you talk about, both of you, winning a third gold
:28:14. > :28:19.medal? Absolutely not! This is what we've done the whole time we are
:28:20. > :28:24.here. We are fighters, we're here to literally to get our oars out. It is
:28:25. > :28:27.brutal stuff out there. As soon as you start thinking about winning and
:28:28. > :28:32.celebrating, you've lost the energy to fight. You've lost the will and
:28:33. > :28:39.desire. So, no, we have a few more sessions to go and each of those is
:28:40. > :28:44.warming up for that last fight. I think we've discussed it before,
:28:45. > :28:48.this is our first Olympics, we are not veterans coming into something.
:28:49. > :28:52.We are hungry for our first Olympic title, which is a healthy position
:28:53. > :28:56.to come into. I know we have more wrinkles but we still have the
:28:57. > :29:02.desire inside burning. They are talking a good game, and they? The
:29:03. > :29:05.Germans also won their heat, looked very impressive as well as the
:29:06. > :29:08.Brits, but the Germans refuse to give any interviews at all. They
:29:09. > :29:12.said they would speak afterwards they are bringing their game face
:29:13. > :29:17.on. You did very well to get any words out of Andy. He didn't want to
:29:18. > :29:20.speak. I thought he was going to be monosyllabic but he opened up
:29:21. > :29:25.towards the end. Some people were very happy to speak. Women's after
:29:26. > :29:29.their heat today when they were hugely impressive in winning it.
:29:30. > :29:34.Three of them came up to chat to us. They were grinning like Cheshire
:29:35. > :29:38.cats. Yes, I think we're all pretty happy
:29:39. > :29:44.with the result. We went out there to win today. We had a crew chat,
:29:45. > :29:48.and that was the mission, no matter what happened, we are putting our
:29:49. > :29:52.boughs ahead of everyone else's. And, for me, it felt like we
:29:53. > :29:56.epitomise that through the course. We were not worried that we were
:29:57. > :30:00.behind off the start, we knew the other girls were going to put in a
:30:01. > :30:04.lot of work into take that much distance in such a short period of
:30:05. > :30:11.time and we held our heads. I am so proud of the way that we have kind
:30:12. > :30:12.of come out here with a bit of a bang. And we've set ourselves up for
:30:13. > :30:22.Saturday. there was no showboating at the end.
:30:23. > :30:28.We just did our thing and stayed up there. We listened to the others are
:30:29. > :30:33.weak and kept long and strong and it is all we needed to do. We don't
:30:34. > :30:37.need to show all our cards today. As the whitest towel in the middle...
:30:38. > :30:55.-- whitest owl... How does it feel? The eight
:30:56. > :31:00.girls are incredible and I know that so many girls have worked so hard to
:31:01. > :31:05.make us be able to go out there and even just win here at the Olympics,
:31:06. > :31:10.since 1997, this project has been coming and coming and it looks like
:31:11. > :31:14.it is coming to fruition now but it is the efforts of everyone, the
:31:15. > :31:18.girls at home now who have not made it through, it has been such a
:31:19. > :31:24.fight. It feel such privileged but all of us to be out here, we can do
:31:25. > :31:27.nothing but have fun and deliver our best. You mentioned the word fun,
:31:28. > :31:32.your faces were all wreathed in smiles when you came by because it
:31:33. > :31:35.was a job well done. You do seem to be having a really good time and
:31:36. > :31:42.this seems to be a really good bond between you all? Why not? It is
:31:43. > :31:45.sport and sport is supposed to be a great thing to do and it is
:31:46. > :31:51.something we are fortunate to be good at and able to do pretty much
:31:52. > :31:56.all day, every day. For me, I am into the end of it and it makes me
:31:57. > :31:59.realise, it will be so hard to retire because it is such a great
:32:00. > :32:02.thing to do and to be able to do it with amazing people, I can't help
:32:03. > :32:13.but be really happy about that. A couple of great answers there from
:32:14. > :32:16.Fran Hatton, the joy of being a sports person but also the black
:32:17. > :32:22.hole that can sometimes appear when you hang up your racquet or whatever
:32:23. > :32:27.it might be. It is very tough and everyone told me I would find it
:32:28. > :32:31.really tough after 25 years in the sport, but I stepped straight down
:32:32. > :32:38.into the Olympic bid and when to 12 so I had another so many years of
:32:39. > :32:43.that Olympic dream. But I did struggle for a few years after, it
:32:44. > :32:47.is a tough process. Let's hope Fran heads into that tunnel with a gold
:32:48. > :32:51.medal around her neck. Coming up shortly, the British pair in the
:32:52. > :32:56.men's lightweight double sculls but Hazell alluded to it earlier on,
:32:57. > :33:03.Paddy Barnes beaten in the boxing with a Titanic duel, obviously
:33:04. > :33:09.hugely disappointing. But these are the O'Donovan Brothers beating the
:33:10. > :33:14.Italians, a real dogfight to the line and that was an impressive
:33:15. > :33:18.performance. Absolutely, they have had some good results but they have
:33:19. > :33:24.been inconsistent. It is good to see them carrying them through to the
:33:25. > :33:29.semifinals. They have a chance to do something very big and special. A
:33:30. > :33:38.Northern Irish men in the British pair together with Will Fletcher and
:33:39. > :33:42.what are their prospects? Last year's will Championships was a very
:33:43. > :33:47.good results. A bit like the women's double, they haven't had a great
:33:48. > :33:52.season but a bit better than the lightweight women's. They had been
:33:53. > :33:56.just off the mark. They need to get a good start so their confidence can
:33:57. > :34:03.get there. One of the many Brazilian flags adorning the grandstand at the
:34:04. > :34:10.Lego stadium. The sun is warm and now, a glorious afternoon. Good
:34:11. > :34:16.afternoon to James Cracknell and Garry Herbert. Thank you. We have
:34:17. > :34:22.Brazil in lane number one and something for the home crowd of the
:34:23. > :34:26.men's lightweight double sculls. In amongst it all, Great Britain's Will
:34:27. > :34:37.Fletcher and Richard Chambers, a high-quality field. South African in
:34:38. > :34:43.lane number five, Thompson and Smith. Olympic champions. Four years
:34:44. > :34:45.ago, they were in the light coxless four and they are now in a new
:34:46. > :34:58.event, a new category. They are away, what can we do for
:34:59. > :35:03.the British crew of Will Fletcher and Richard Chambers? They were
:35:04. > :35:06.fifth two times out at the World Cup this year, really disappointing
:35:07. > :35:12.given they were silver-medallists. They came away with a silver medal
:35:13. > :35:18.behind France at the European Championships last year. These guys
:35:19. > :35:25.can step on, of the five, two places are available, fighting for the
:35:26. > :35:29.semifinals. You mentioned the South Africans in the coxless four, they
:35:30. > :35:33.won the will Championships and they are the world record holders, so
:35:34. > :35:38.they may not have had the best season but they have the pedigree
:35:39. > :35:45.and the speed. You would expect them to get one of the two qualifying
:35:46. > :35:50.spots. Fletcher and Chambers, ahead by one length. The British crew
:35:51. > :35:53.laying the gauntlet down early. It is really interesting to see the
:35:54. > :36:00.tactics of all of this, because you have to back yourself 100%, to go
:36:01. > :36:03.out and have a length at 250. You have to back your legs and each
:36:04. > :36:10.other and yourselves psychologically. We have talked
:36:11. > :36:13.about what they are going to do in the first 40 metres, they don't want
:36:14. > :36:18.to shut everyone else out of the race. It is not just about
:36:19. > :36:23.qualifying, if they win this heat, they will get a better semifinal
:36:24. > :36:29.draw, in an event that is so closely matched, the better you do in your
:36:30. > :36:36.race, the better semi you have and a better chance of a medal. The South
:36:37. > :36:42.Africans will know that as well. Three leading cruise, Great Britain,
:36:43. > :36:50.China and South Africa, breaking away from Brazil, Switzerland. Five
:36:51. > :36:53.boats, only two qualification spots as we go alongside. China Son and
:36:54. > :37:11.Wang. Stretching it out now and being
:37:12. > :37:14.stretched out to the right. Will Fletcher and Richard Chambers. What
:37:15. > :37:18.they have done really well is put themselves well out of the
:37:19. > :37:20.peripheral vision of the South Africans so they are not only
:37:21. > :37:24.leading but the South Africans have to turn around if they want to see
:37:25. > :37:29.where they are. They cannot glance to their right to see where the
:37:30. > :37:33.British are. The South Africans will have to make the decision to either
:37:34. > :37:38.chase them down or hold their second place and fight the battle another
:37:39. > :37:43.day. Frandsen having already shown their style comfortably winning
:37:44. > :37:52.their heats, the world champions from last year, undefeated. The
:37:53. > :37:57.South Africans have just started to inch back, definitely holding the
:37:58. > :38:02.British and starting to inch back so they may have given up hopes from
:38:03. > :38:08.qualifying first from the heat but they have another 1000 metres to do
:38:09. > :38:10.it. This is where we will see if the Britons are front row race or rowing
:38:11. > :38:23.and even spirited race. It is time to look like a matchplay
:38:24. > :38:28.race between Great Britain and South Africa. Thompson and Smith in the
:38:29. > :38:33.night double closest to us. Just inching back ominously, stroke for
:38:34. > :38:38.stroke, coming right back on the British double led by Richard
:38:39. > :38:44.Chambers and Will Fletcher. South Africa were fourth in the will
:38:45. > :38:51.Championships last year. Different story, different year. The Brits
:38:52. > :38:55.have responded. I saw Will Fletcher do a call and they responded and
:38:56. > :38:59.held the South African Porsche and they know where they want to qualify
:39:00. > :39:02.and they are prepared to put a little bit more into it than just
:39:03. > :39:06.qualifying and that makes absolute sense because we have seen in the
:39:07. > :39:14.first few days, the weather plays a massive part. You will get a better
:39:15. > :39:19.lame if you qualify better. The South Africans are coming right back
:39:20. > :39:23.in there. They have the first of three World Cup regattas earlier in
:39:24. > :39:27.the season, so plenty of speed. They are coming up level to Great Britain
:39:28. > :39:32.and now they are starting to go through. The British Fletcher and
:39:33. > :39:37.Chambers, it is about keeping length, keeping their heads up. They
:39:38. > :39:41.know they have qualified through to the semifinal but now it is about
:39:42. > :39:46.lot allowing South Africa, as we go to 1500 metres, for the South
:39:47. > :39:54.Africans to skull away from them. Absolutely right. I saw Thompson
:39:55. > :40:03.make a call because what they want to do is put a nail in the coffin.
:40:04. > :40:06.If they can crush out any ambitions and self belief the British have,
:40:07. > :40:13.they will want to do that in the heat. They have been let down and
:40:14. > :40:19.they have rode through and if I was then, I would put a length into them
:40:20. > :40:25.and make the British think. The last 500 metres or so, South Africa have
:40:26. > :40:28.taken a length, two length out of Great Britain, Fletcher and chambers
:40:29. > :40:39.now hanging on. We through the 250-metre mark. They have taken the
:40:40. > :40:42.600 metres, taken two length out. It is up to the Brits know to take
:40:43. > :40:48.confidence from the speed they showed in the first half and work it
:40:49. > :40:53.out to get that speed and efficiency so they can have a quick 500 as
:40:54. > :40:58.well. Thompson and Smith continued to slip away from Fletcher and
:40:59. > :41:03.chambers. Really impressive stuff from the South Africans. Great
:41:04. > :41:07.Britain still in qualification spot. Of the five including China, Brazil
:41:08. > :41:13.and Switzerland, it is Great Britain and South Africa that would qualify
:41:14. > :41:17.through to the semifinal. But it is the way this qualification has
:41:18. > :41:23.unfolded. South Africa have been very impressive in the second half
:41:24. > :41:28.of the race. The first half was all about Great Britain and the second
:41:29. > :41:30.half was the all about South Africa and that is the most important part
:41:31. > :41:40.of the race for obvious reasons. Would you be happy you were through,
:41:41. > :41:48.Steve or would you think they got beaten a bit too easily?
:41:49. > :41:51.They will be a bit disappointed. The South Africans were just moving
:41:52. > :41:56.their boat better, at a lower rate of striking.
:41:57. > :42:04.They will not be happy with that but they go through to the next stage.
:42:05. > :42:07.In the William's lightweight double sculls, cat Copeland, gold-medallist
:42:08. > :42:10.four years ago, partners with Charlotte tailor, this was not how
:42:11. > :42:22.they anticipated things turning out. It is China, Denmark, United States,
:42:23. > :42:40.Great Britain and Italy. Disappointing season continuing. The
:42:41. > :42:44.overlap into the heats for the women's double sculls lightweight
:42:45. > :42:49.for Great Britain and Katherine Copeland and Charlotte Taylor,
:42:50. > :42:54.silver-medallists at the World Championships. They need to find
:42:55. > :43:03.something to get the speed going. At the moment, China looking very
:43:04. > :43:11.strong. Thomas and Russ Musson, try as they do, not quite coming up
:43:12. > :43:15.level. 250 ad, 25 strokes. One last opportunity to have a go and
:43:16. > :43:20.remember, it is all about the Olympic Games, all about
:43:21. > :43:28.qualification. Then you have to try to qualify as high as you can, so
:43:29. > :43:42.that is why they will keep on it. Every position you have,...
:43:43. > :43:52.Inside the last 100 metres, China continued to hold off Thomas and
:43:53. > :43:56.Rasmussen from Denmark. Those two double sculls opened up a
:43:57. > :44:06.significant gap over the United States. Britons in the back of the
:44:07. > :44:11.field in a fight with the Italians. United States getting third and
:44:12. > :44:15.Italy getting fourth and Great Britain get disappointment. A
:44:16. > :44:16.disappointing season through 2016 and a disappointing opener at the
:44:17. > :44:23.2016 Olympic Games. They are two of the most a bully and
:44:24. > :44:45.people you will ever meet. Now, Glover and Stanning, the
:44:46. > :44:51.Olympic champions from 2012. Let's go back to Gary.
:44:52. > :44:56.If 2012 was all about Katherine Grainger and 2016 is all about
:44:57. > :45:01.Heather and Helen. Here they are, they are in lane number five, they
:45:02. > :45:05.open their 2016 Olympic account here in the first heat of the women's
:45:06. > :45:12.coxless pair. Denmark and one, Germany and two, Netherlands in
:45:13. > :45:17.four, Great Britain in lane number five. Undefeated in this Olympiad,
:45:18. > :45:22.the British crew, so all of these crews over the last four years and
:45:23. > :45:27.before that, they've come up against them, they've been beaten
:45:28. > :45:30.convincingly. So, for Glover and Stanning, this is a psychological
:45:31. > :45:39.game and they are motivated like I've never seen them before. They
:45:40. > :45:50.sat there and were itching to get out there. Now their dominance, this
:45:51. > :45:54.is where they want to be. They can go straight from the heat to the
:45:55. > :45:59.semifinal, and crush some of the dreams of the other people. The
:46:00. > :46:03.challengers could be Denmark. They have raced over the year to know
:46:04. > :46:09.they would have to have a really bad race for that to be a challenge. Let
:46:10. > :46:17.alone a defeat. Into the closing stages of the first 500 metres, some
:46:18. > :46:22.pressure from Denmark. But isn't like they won't take that on board.
:46:23. > :46:26.They are so supremely confident, and they've never been challenged,
:46:27. > :46:32.they've always raced hard from the front. This is a crew that will have
:46:33. > :46:36.a perfect race plan. First 500 that is what they're doing right now,
:46:37. > :46:43.getting into the race. They are being led by Denmark, and expect the
:46:44. > :46:49.pair of Glover and Stanning to get into their rhythm. The Danish must
:46:50. > :46:54.be thinking, hello, this is all right, this is going quickly but it
:46:55. > :47:00.is about sustaining that. Watch the British closest to us. And Germany
:47:01. > :47:05.in lane number two they will want to have something to say about this but
:47:06. > :47:17.they've already been dropped. Nobody has come back length on the British
:47:18. > :47:20.pair over the of this combination. What the key thing is, Heather and
:47:21. > :47:23.Helen are building themselves up because they know their quality over
:47:24. > :47:25.the last four years of being unbeaten, they are thinking about
:47:26. > :47:29.the final, where is especially Germany and Denmark are thinking,
:47:30. > :47:35.avoid the repechage. They are doing a different race. The British are
:47:36. > :47:41.doing an aide to be steady. Denmark are clearing out, trying to make the
:47:42. > :47:45.Netherlands and Canada in relevant. They need to make sure they do that
:47:46. > :47:50.early on. I don't think they will be racing the British, they are just
:47:51. > :47:54.making sure they qualify nice and easy for the semis. For the British,
:47:55. > :47:59.they are setting themselves up for a good run. So, Denmark go through the
:48:00. > :48:07.halfway mark. They are leading the British, the first time the British
:48:08. > :48:12.have been led since London 2012. So dominant have they been in the
:48:13. > :48:19.second 500, finding their speed. So the Danish up in lane number one,
:48:20. > :48:23.fourth in the world championships last year, the event in which
:48:24. > :48:26.Britain were first, they lead by half a length. This is a sensational
:48:27. > :48:29.first 100 metres in the opening heat of the women's pairs. Glover and
:48:30. > :48:34.Stanning are being led by half a length. Here is a mark of a true
:48:35. > :48:38.champions. They are the defending Olympic champions, undefeated
:48:39. > :48:43.through this part Olympiad. Will they let that creep in or will they
:48:44. > :48:48.think, stick to our race plan? They will stick to their race plan and
:48:49. > :48:53.they've raced these days enough to know that they will have to have put
:48:54. > :48:58.in a huge amount in the first half so they won't change their race
:48:59. > :49:03.plan. The one thing that concerns me is their racing three beats higher
:49:04. > :49:08.than the Danish, taking three strokes more minute, so effectively
:49:09. > :49:12.they're going the same speed, so they're not growing as efficiently
:49:13. > :49:17.as the Danish but we don't know how much power the Danish are putting
:49:18. > :49:21.in. They are doing almost 1500 metre race to make sure they clear out but
:49:22. > :49:28.I'd be surprised... I thought it would be the other way round. In the
:49:29. > :49:32.midst of this third 500 metres, Glover and Stanning are in uncharted
:49:33. > :49:39.tyre trade. They've never been led in the middle of the third 500 in
:49:40. > :49:47.recent years. This is a spectacular performance so far for Denmark.
:49:48. > :49:50.Remember, we have Germany, Canada, Netherlands. It has become a two
:49:51. > :49:59.boat race right now as we go right board with Glover to the right,
:50:00. > :50:04.Heather Stanning not looking as dynamic around the front end here.
:50:05. > :50:10.What I was going to say is that if the Brits win from this position, it
:50:11. > :50:15.would be their reputation that will have beaten the Danish, rather than
:50:16. > :50:19.them being faster than the Danish. The Danish are underrated, they are
:50:20. > :50:24.ahead in the race. If they lose from this position, it is what the damage
:50:25. > :50:31.the Brits have done over the last few years. They are going by their
:50:32. > :50:36.reputation as much as the people. So, the Danish are still holding. If
:50:37. > :50:42.I was in the bow seat of this power, I would be saying now, 35 strokes.
:50:43. > :50:47.Its 350 metres out and we will beat the defending and reigning Olympic
:50:48. > :50:51.champions, only 35 strokes, and that will be a massive scalp. Don't
:50:52. > :50:57.discount Glover and Stanning in lane five because now they are starting
:50:58. > :51:01.to lengthen out, the power is coming on. A little look right from Heather
:51:02. > :51:06.Stanning, marking territory, but the boughs of the British crew, they are
:51:07. > :51:11.starting to move. Surely, they can have an impact here? The pedigree of
:51:12. > :51:15.this crew as such they should overhaul the crew from Denmark in
:51:16. > :51:19.lane number one. And they are going quicker. At the moment, they are
:51:20. > :51:23.racing five pips higher and not having the impact they should do.
:51:24. > :51:27.They will come through and win it, but this would have been the perfect
:51:28. > :51:34.wake-up call for them. They will win it, they've been woken up. They had
:51:35. > :51:37.the blue lines, they've come through, but they've been made to
:51:38. > :51:42.fight for this victory. This is the first biggest test in the last
:51:43. > :51:48.Olympiad that Glover and Stanning have had and it is on the opening
:51:49. > :51:54.day of their heaps of this 2016 Olympic regatta, and it has taken
:51:55. > :51:59.Denmark, who push hard again. They are coming back! Denmark are not
:52:00. > :52:05.rolling over. And by one foot on the line, Glover and Stanning, just 100
:52:06. > :52:10.out, when we thought Britain had it, Denmark found another turn of speed,
:52:11. > :52:16.up it came again but they ran out of water. Glover and Stanning, well, my
:52:17. > :52:24.gosh, right on the edge. It was. We watched them yesterday and their
:52:25. > :52:30.rhythm was spot-on. It showed about the strokes they've taken. They
:52:31. > :52:34.won't give away any emotions on that, but it'll be interesting to be
:52:35. > :52:40.in the debrief of the British pair of Glover and Stanning.
:52:41. > :52:46.We weren't expecting that! What a race and contest, what drama! Your
:52:47. > :52:50.thoughts? It was a shock, that'll send shock waves through the whole
:52:51. > :52:54.team. I'd have put them in ranking order of the men's four is the best
:52:55. > :52:57.chance of our gold and women's pair is the second but not very much
:52:58. > :53:03.between them. They haven't been beaten to five years. They came very
:53:04. > :53:10.close to getting beaten. They did race at Lucerne, and they didn't
:53:11. > :53:14.come out for one race because of illness. I hope there was no
:53:15. > :53:19.illness. They didn't look right. The rhythm, the rate of striking, they
:53:20. > :53:22.were higher than the Danes. The Danes weren't really a medal
:53:23. > :53:26.contender, so that is a bit of a shock. That is the joy of sport,
:53:27. > :53:30.there's no such thing as a certainty, and we thought Glover and
:53:31. > :53:35.Stanning were a certainty for a gold medal but plenty of food for thought
:53:36. > :53:39.as we move through this regatta. We alluded to the men's four, that's
:53:40. > :53:43.coming up in 20 minutes. One final thing, actually. If I could ask
:53:44. > :53:47.Steve to move that way because we've been saying all along what a
:53:48. > :53:51.fantastic venue hisses. This is the most brilliant setting for a James
:53:52. > :53:58.Bond movie. You can imagine things coming out of the water and that. We
:53:59. > :54:02.reckon the best cameraman in Brazil, Ian, reckons that if we go in on
:54:03. > :54:09.that house over there, isn't that where the fill-in is going to live?
:54:10. > :54:15.And he says, Mr Bond, come to my house.
:54:16. > :54:20.Absolutely, I can see him. Sir Steve Redgrave to take over from Daniel
:54:21. > :54:25.Craig? It's going to happen! Anyway, Helen and Heather, never in doubt,
:54:26. > :54:30.was it? What an almighty jolt to the system that was but they've done it.
:54:31. > :54:34.They still keep their unbeaten record to 37 races, but that was
:54:35. > :54:44.very, very close. About a mile away from the rowing event, is the
:54:45. > :54:51.sailing event. You remember Weymouth and Portland in London's games.
:54:52. > :54:56.Great Britain's sailors for this second medal table to the
:54:57. > :55:00.Australians. Big Ben Ainslie no longer in the team. The man
:55:01. > :55:06.determined to step out from his rather large shadow is Giles Scott.
:55:07. > :55:10.And he is very much the man to beat. He's a four-time world champion. He
:55:11. > :55:17.is one of the most dominant sportsmen in the right now.
:55:18. > :55:31.Giles Scott in a sentence. Easy-going, I'd like to think. Even
:55:32. > :55:32.though I am a sportsmen. I'd think you'd think anything much of me,
:55:33. > :55:44.really. For me, it began at the sailing club
:55:45. > :55:49.when I was probably about five or six. My parents took me and my
:55:50. > :55:52.brothers to graph for beginners course to keep us out of trouble.
:55:53. > :55:56.All I wanted to do was get in a boat to try to make it go fast one way
:55:57. > :56:00.and then fast the other way. These used way to describe it is that it
:56:01. > :56:07.is the men's heavyweight class and to say that you need to be 90-105
:56:08. > :56:13.kilos, it is incredibly technically demanding. It is a fiddly boat, it
:56:14. > :56:19.is twofold, really. It is a physical battle at a technical battle as
:56:20. > :56:26.well. When you compete on your own, there is no one to hide behind.
:56:27. > :56:31.There is a little bit more pressure that comes along with it. The crowds
:56:32. > :56:34.are about to cheer now because Ben Ainslie wins his fourth Olympic
:56:35. > :56:39.gold! He is the greatest sailing Olympian in the history of the
:56:40. > :56:43.games. The media will, of course, pick up on the fact that you're
:56:44. > :56:48.sailing in the same class as Ben Ainslie. Do you feel like you're
:56:49. > :56:52.ploughing your own furrow or following in his footsteps? There's
:56:53. > :56:56.been a huge change in the garden I'd like to think I'm following my own
:56:57. > :57:01.pathway, it just happens that the man that has come before me was
:57:02. > :57:04.then. Not qualifying for London, sitting and watching the racing
:57:05. > :57:07.going on, that wasn't the easiest thing for me to do but I am glad I
:57:08. > :57:16.stuck around and put myself through it. Highlights have been winning
:57:17. > :57:21.major championships, winning Olympic test events, winning world
:57:22. > :57:29.Championships, European Championships, beating people like
:57:30. > :57:32.Ben Ainslie. I think if he asks anyone of my competitors, they'd be
:57:33. > :57:37.happy enough to say they want to go into the Olympics with a string of
:57:38. > :57:44.results that I've had. I know what I want from it, and that is gold. One
:57:45. > :57:47.thing I've wanted to achieve for a very long time and I've worked very
:57:48. > :57:53.hard to try to do that. I'm confident in where I'm at. It's not
:57:54. > :57:58.going to be easy. A lot of people have said that it is a sure thing,
:57:59. > :58:02.which it certainly isn't. It is an Olympic Games. It is arguably one of
:58:03. > :58:10.the hardest regatta as you can go and do nothing is given. I certainly
:58:11. > :58:18.think I am more than capable of doing it, but it isn't a given.
:58:19. > :58:22.Giles Scott starts his campaign in the finn class tomorrow. We have
:58:23. > :58:27.four classes out today and we save hallow for the first time in this
:58:28. > :58:31.regatta to two-time gold-medallist Shirley Robertson. There she is, a
:58:32. > :58:36.hallway! Have you got your sea legs in Brazilian waters? I know John was
:58:37. > :58:42.going about his view of the rowing, but look at mine. I have trumped him
:58:43. > :58:47.today. There's a little bit of a breeze, the rowers were concerned
:58:48. > :58:50.about having too much wind, but it can be pretty fickle, the conditions
:58:51. > :58:55.at the British team have spent a lot of time out here in the last few
:58:56. > :58:58.years, haven't they? Even the Brazilians don't even know what's
:58:59. > :59:05.going on here. It's very complicated. You can see, we are on
:59:06. > :59:09.the medal race course now and there is very windy. There is a lot of
:59:10. > :59:14.tired and currents, and every day seems different. I would say, having
:59:15. > :59:19.spent a bit of time in the park, the British are more comfortable here
:59:20. > :59:24.than most. They've invested a lot of energy and resources in analysing
:59:25. > :59:28.the babe. They don't feel too fazed by it. I'm sure they don't. I've got
:59:29. > :59:33.to address this. Putting it delicately, you don't want to be
:59:34. > :59:41.capsizing in Connemara Bay. The super bacteria and that super. Has
:59:42. > :59:45.it been over raked? I won't be stripping off and going for a dip in
:59:46. > :59:49.between races. Today, that won't be on their minds. In terms of water
:59:50. > :59:54.quality today, the tide is coming in, so we are getting fresh water
:59:55. > :59:58.from the Atlantic Ocean. Today, it isn't an issue. If it does rain, if
:59:59. > :00:04.the tide is low and it's coming from the bay, it is a massive Bay, 241
:00:05. > :00:14.square kilometres, and if it starts to rain, and we have seen it rained
:00:15. > :00:17.hard here, it brings a lot of debris out of the bay. Today, all good. All
:00:18. > :00:20.good indeed. I was talking about the medal count four years ago. I just
:00:21. > :00:26.wonder what you feel about the medal chances here? We come into this with
:00:27. > :00:31.three world champions. Two of them in action today.
:00:32. > :00:38.Two years ago when I looked at the squad, I felt desperate about it,
:00:39. > :00:41.but now, that is not the case. They have all raised their game and the
:00:42. > :00:47.team manager said, we have real medal chances in every single class,
:00:48. > :00:54.in all ten events. Today, four of those real chances are starting. The
:00:55. > :00:58.laser class, the man, Nick Thompson, he is a double world champion, the
:00:59. > :01:02.girl, Alison Young, has won the worlds this year. She is on form.
:01:03. > :01:10.Just behind me, you see the windsurfers. Brian it was a bronze
:01:11. > :01:17.medallist in China, she was sick in London. She well be on form. A
:01:18. > :01:21.silver medallist in London, five Olympic Games, bronze in Athens. He
:01:22. > :01:24.has found his form this year. Last year, he was properly struggling but
:01:25. > :01:31.he is one of the favourites this year. As a double Olympic medallist
:01:32. > :01:34.out there, Gold medallist, you look perfectly at ease, but I am feeling
:01:35. > :01:39.queasy watching you Bob up and down on the water. We will catch up with
:01:40. > :01:46.you later. It is champion to see you. Thank you. We are going to get
:01:47. > :01:49.onto dry land now, but we still have a watery theme because there is
:01:50. > :01:56.Adrian Moorhouse. 28 years waiting for someone to join you as a
:01:57. > :02:02.breaststroke champion. It was Adam Peaty last night. Let's reflect on
:02:03. > :02:10.this, Adrian. Have you had a chance to speak to Adam after all of last
:02:11. > :02:13.night's events? No, I think he is having a well earned rest and I am
:02:14. > :02:18.doing the rounds of the media outlets. It has been great to chat
:02:19. > :02:23.all morning about it. Adam has the relay towards the end of the week,
:02:24. > :02:29.so he is still in athlete mode. I'm on the BBC site. He totally smashed
:02:30. > :02:34.his own world record twice in three races. When USS everything that has
:02:35. > :02:38.gone on in the games so far, for you, this has got to be one of the
:02:39. > :02:44.standout performances in any sport so far. -- when you assess. Is it
:02:45. > :02:50.really that good? The interesting thing is we saw three last night.
:02:51. > :02:55.The American in the 400 free, and in the fly and Adam Peaty come here is
:02:56. > :02:58.ours. There were three world number ones, three odds on certain
:02:59. > :03:06.favourites. All destroyed their field. He was one of three last
:03:07. > :03:13.night. In our terms, I only one mind by 100, he won by 1.5 seconds. It
:03:14. > :03:18.was hugely impressive. He has left ahead of the rest of the field and
:03:19. > :03:23.he is that good, it is his first Olympic Games, much more to come.
:03:24. > :03:26.What seemed to impress a lot of people, including me, is even when
:03:27. > :03:31.he came up for his first race, he had that adrenaline flush to his
:03:32. > :03:35.cheeks. He didn't seem to have any nerves at all, there was no fear.
:03:36. > :03:40.What impressed you about his attitude and the way he grasped this
:03:41. > :03:44.opportunity? It is the mark of a true champion. Someone who is at the
:03:45. > :03:52.top of their game physically at the peak of any fitness level. They do
:03:53. > :03:56.it on the day. Mentally, they are able to cope with what is there.
:03:57. > :04:00.Effectively, he took control of what he could control. It was all around
:04:01. > :04:07.him, his bubble. Everything else was just dripping off him. It didn't
:04:08. > :04:15.bother him. He walked out to do a two breaststroke length. He held the
:04:16. > :04:18.world record and all he has to do was deliver. It was more of a
:04:19. > :04:23.technical performance once you get all the noise out of the way, which
:04:24. > :04:26.I think he is brilliant at. He has the medley relay to come later in
:04:27. > :04:33.the week. I'm sure you will get the chance to say hello and welcome to
:04:34. > :04:38.the club. When I saw David Wilkie after I want my medal, he was
:04:39. > :04:42.commentating and said exactly those words, which was nice and pleasant
:04:43. > :04:47.to hear. It is good to have another men's breaststroke swimmer carry on
:04:48. > :04:51.the tradition. It seems to be the stroke of choice in terms of
:04:52. > :04:58.Britain's male champions, in terms of you and Duncan and David Wilkie.
:04:59. > :05:01.This stroke, why is it such a forte with male swimmers? Interesting
:05:02. > :05:06.question. We have asked at a number times. There has to be something
:05:07. > :05:10.about role modelling, something about those guys are out there, Adam
:05:11. > :05:15.Peaty will now be inspiring a lot of people, they will see his race a
:05:16. > :05:19.lot. You might want to emulate him, do breaststroke. Breaststroke chose
:05:20. > :05:26.me, I didn't choose it because it was the only thing I was good at. I
:05:27. > :05:36.was rubbish at backstroke. I ended up being a breaststroke. He happened
:05:37. > :05:40.to do the stroke I was good at. A good man to follow. Then the
:05:41. > :05:46.coaching staff start to understand what world-class breaststroke is,
:05:47. > :05:50.because you see it every day in county championships, all with other
:05:51. > :05:57.British athletes. It is something about technically understanding what
:05:58. > :06:02.it takes to be a good breaststroke swimmer. We have phases of other
:06:03. > :06:11.strokes. Jazz Carlin winning the 400 free silver last night was inspired
:06:12. > :06:17.by Becky. Begu did a similar thing. In Tokyo, it is interesting, I think
:06:18. > :06:23.we get a few more distance freestyle women. I am sure you will certainly
:06:24. > :06:27.enjoy chatting to him. He has another programme to the end of the
:06:28. > :06:32.week and you have a full programme in the afternoon heats and the
:06:33. > :06:40.finals. I was absolutely ecstatic to see it all going on. Right, it has
:06:41. > :06:44.been a busy day and we are going to hop back now to the Deodoro
:06:45. > :06:49.Equestrian Centre because we saw Gemma Tattersall going for Great
:06:50. > :06:58.Britain earlier in the three day event. The Team GB riders came into
:06:59. > :07:02.the next phase. William Fox-Pitt led the individual events. We are about
:07:03. > :07:04.to see William and the rest of the British riders along with the other
:07:05. > :07:11.star names in this second part of the cross-country. Enjoy.
:07:12. > :07:18.France have really set the pace. Their first ride is the only one who
:07:19. > :07:25.run inside the time, and stays on his overnight score of 42
:07:26. > :07:33.individually. Now the very talented rider, part of the bronze medal
:07:34. > :07:41.team. 16th individually, but he had a super dressage test of 83.4.
:07:42. > :07:43.Nicely completed for France. They look to have a very good plan, the
:07:44. > :08:12.French. He was not the first to do that. He
:08:13. > :08:21.was a long way off the step and only just caught the lip. It just didn't
:08:22. > :08:27.happen for him. Now he is going to waste time to get through that
:08:28. > :08:38.combination. He has to settle down and get on with it. Is he in
:08:39. > :08:42.trouble? You could see him thinking, where I going? You pulled right and
:08:43. > :08:57.left and didn't cross his tracks. He is OK. Got with that one. Still with
:08:58. > :08:59.that 20 penalty. He will be looking to get home without any more if you
:09:00. > :09:14.can. He was one who scored well for
:09:15. > :09:19.France in the Europeans last year. 16th individually and helped France
:09:20. > :09:35.to qualify here. He's not jumping easily. Oh, my
:09:36. > :09:51.word. Hail a cab, go for it, anything. The French having a bit of
:09:52. > :09:57.a wobble. Nicolas got them off to a flying start, the only one within
:09:58. > :10:05.the time so far. This is well over a minute of the ultimate time. 20
:10:06. > :10:27.jumping penalties, including in that 50.4. 93.8. A man that many feel is
:10:28. > :10:32.a medallist in the making. This lovely nine-year-old horse.
:10:33. > :10:39.Dressage, 37.6 in second, just 0.6 of a mark behind first place.
:10:40. > :10:51.Australia at the moment, their first rider, Sam Griffiths, and Australia
:10:52. > :10:56.won three gold medals on the trot in 1992, 1996 and in Sydney in 2000.
:10:57. > :11:00.William Fox-Pitt is next out, but it will be a little while because we
:11:01. > :11:07.have one horse that has withdrawn in the running order, the Russian. It
:11:08. > :11:11.will just be a few more moments before William gets underway. The
:11:12. > :11:22.man who is 0.6 of a mark behind him in second place is out on course.
:11:23. > :11:27.What a beautiful shape the horse makes over that fence. His back legs
:11:28. > :11:34.never touched the brush. Didn't even breathe on it.
:11:35. > :11:43.Quite a few people were looking at coming the opposite direction and
:11:44. > :11:53.doing a left bend in between the two fences there. It really was far too
:11:54. > :11:59.risky. It would take a lot of extra energy out of the horse. He would
:12:00. > :12:13.seem to be going at a very decent pace to me. This man is in real
:12:14. > :12:15.earnest here. Great to watch the balance and a little bit of
:12:16. > :12:25.reorganising before this combination. Wastes next to no time.
:12:26. > :12:33.Holds his line. One of the few that didn't actually touch that flag on
:12:34. > :12:38.the left on that corner. Christopher Burton bustles on. How close is he
:12:39. > :12:43.to the time? The horse looks full of running. Here is 47-year-old William
:12:44. > :12:47.Fox-Pitt. He has been the world's number one on many occasions. He has
:12:48. > :13:02.won Olympic medals, major championships. Babington, Burley he
:13:03. > :13:07.has won five times, six times. He sets off on Chilli Morning. This is
:13:08. > :13:12.the second of three disciplines. Dressage burst, then cross-country.
:13:13. > :13:16.Here is his nearest competitor. William led after dressage, this man
:13:17. > :13:20.was second. Christopher Burton of Australia. He has flown round. He
:13:21. > :13:31.could be close to the time that would incur no time penalties. That
:13:32. > :13:38.is 10.15. William Fox-Pitt on this stallion, Chilli Morning. William
:13:39. > :13:43.had a horrible accident, horrible fall in France, he has made an
:13:44. > :13:48.amazing recovery to take up this Olympic challenge. Those first three
:13:49. > :13:50.fences all uphill for William and now the first major combination, his
:13:51. > :14:03.first water fence. There have been quite a few problems
:14:04. > :14:10.there with horses running past that log. It is great for William to get
:14:11. > :14:16.that out of the way. This is the man looking to get under 10.15 and go
:14:17. > :14:22.into the lead. One left. This is a young horse he has always thought so
:14:23. > :14:27.much of will stop you must be very close. He must be on the time, he
:14:28. > :14:32.doesn't want to get it wrong. He is looking but he is not over riding to
:14:33. > :14:38.that finish. He thinks he is inside the time and what a brilliant
:14:39. > :14:43.effort! He is! PS. William want to know this, but if William wants
:14:44. > :14:47.display in the lead, he has to do exactly the same. 21 competitors
:14:48. > :14:57.gone and only two inside the time so far. These tricky corners at friends
:14:58. > :15:01.six. Hardly anyone has got a direct line over these corners. It is
:15:02. > :15:11.impossible to get a straight route. You have to do a bit of bending.
:15:12. > :15:18.A great shot of the horse and rider. He has his eye on the second
:15:19. > :15:23.element. He lets the horse get on with his job and make the second
:15:24. > :15:27.one, no problem. It is less than the eye of a needle.
:15:28. > :15:36.A lovely piece of riding. A very measured approach to get himself
:15:37. > :15:42.fit. His last important competition he looked as good as he has done in
:15:43. > :15:46.the preparation. He knows he has to be on song if he wants to win a gold
:15:47. > :15:57.medal, something he has never done. So nearly in Athens. His horse went
:15:58. > :16:04.saw overnight. But he would love to do it on this lovely stallion. He is
:16:05. > :16:08.giving us a thrilling bit of spectator time here. He is making it
:16:09. > :16:20.look convincing. You can hear the horse brushing
:16:21. > :16:30.through that. There is a camera attached to the fence.
:16:31. > :16:44.Well written. Excellent. He got a punchy, positive, good stride up and
:16:45. > :16:54.kept accelerating. That is an enormous log. Chilli Morning looks
:16:55. > :17:02.like he is in fighting form. They won Badminton in 2015.
:17:03. > :17:08.This has been one of the reasons why William has worked so hard over
:17:09. > :17:16.recent months, with a great team around him. Chilli Morning galloping
:17:17. > :17:21.relentlessly. Looking effortless, covering the ground brilliantly. He
:17:22. > :17:25.has not brushed himself, he has given the horse time. Chilli Morning
:17:26. > :17:30.has not done a lot of competing in the last 18 months, but he is one of
:17:31. > :17:41.the best horses in the world at the moment. He won individual bronze in
:17:42. > :17:48.the World Championships in 2014. Britain took silver, behind the
:17:49. > :17:57.Germans. William would love to put that right. That was the world
:17:58. > :18:08.title. That was Sandra Auffarth, she has been round, with one refusal.
:18:09. > :18:43.Some of these fences are very well numbered and lettered, because there
:18:44. > :18:48.are places where you can take a turn, other places where you can't.
:18:49. > :19:22.It is not easy. The third of the four waters. He is
:19:23. > :19:30.through that. This lovely stallion, Chilli Morning, with some lovely
:19:31. > :19:42.young horses. A very exciting stallion, but he is still capable.
:19:43. > :19:47.As Mark Todd gets under way. For New Zealand, the number two rider. In
:19:48. > :19:58.17th place after dressage, with a score of 44.
:19:59. > :20:08.William Fox-Pitt is not alone. He comes to the final water. It has
:20:09. > :20:13.caused various problems. A lot of changes of plans. You have to have
:20:14. > :20:20.several plans in your head and be ready to change at any point. This
:20:21. > :20:27.is where the course designer has done a fantastic job. He gets there
:20:28. > :20:36.in three and two, a turn in three, brilliant. Only three fences to go.
:20:37. > :20:42.They still have to climb up to the top of the hill. It is a massive
:20:43. > :20:54.spread, wide fence. Chilli Morning steps over it. The front bar was put
:20:55. > :21:03.there by a crane, it is so heavy. He is over the time. Not hugely.
:21:04. > :21:16.Comment down to the last. You can see the second ticking away.
:21:17. > :21:26.That penalty includes the 20. Disappointment for written. But
:21:27. > :21:35.William around with the best of the British scores so far. Now, Mark
:21:36. > :21:42.Todd. What a man, two Olympic Games. A brilliant piece of direction by
:21:43. > :21:49.the 60-year-old. The horse had a look. He never moved, he kept the
:21:50. > :21:54.horse the right side of the flag. He was so brilliant here at
:21:55. > :22:00.reorganising, keeping the balance, to jump the second element. In the
:22:01. > :22:10.start box, a very important round, Michael Jung, the European, world
:22:11. > :22:14.and Olympic medallist. The winner of Badminton and Burley. What can he do
:22:15. > :22:25.for the German team? Very interesting situation. One the Grand
:22:26. > :22:30.Slam on this horse. This is a combination that really has done
:22:31. > :22:37.everything. He won his first Olympic gold in London. That was on his 30th
:22:38. > :22:51.birthday. He had his 34th birthday a week ago. The great Mark Todd. Not
:22:52. > :22:55.only riding at his seventh Olympics, but managing the Brazilian team.
:22:56. > :23:01.That has never been done before. That would not be an easy
:23:02. > :23:05.combination. He has a big stride. It is a committed three down the hill,
:23:06. > :23:13.then you have to turn in the air and get a short three. It was well
:23:14. > :23:21.planned and organised. There is no man better at doing that. That was
:23:22. > :23:24.not the most attractive line I have ever seen through fence six! Michael
:23:25. > :23:39.Jung manoeuvres this horse brilliantly. And Sam spending like a
:23:40. > :23:46.pony club games pony. 14 years old. It is a very good overhead shot.
:23:47. > :23:54.That is a great line. This man is as good as ever.
:23:55. > :24:01.He asks for it and gets a response. This is a man who retired after the
:24:02. > :24:15.Sydney Olympics. He will be close to the time. The time faults are
:24:16. > :24:28.clocking up. That will be added onto his dress roles score of 44. He goes
:24:29. > :24:39.into third place. The further this combination go, the more they look
:24:40. > :24:44.their best. He seemed to set off under pressure. But now they are
:24:45. > :24:48.looking like the partnership that has won Olympic gold. They lost
:24:49. > :24:56.their world title to Sandra Urbach in France. But then they won the
:24:57. > :25:01.European title. On an eight-year-old that he was going to write here, but
:25:02. > :25:06.he had a problem, so it was the beloved id Sam that won him his
:25:07. > :25:11.Rolex Grand Slam, three back-to-back competitions, Burley, Kentucky and
:25:12. > :25:16.Badminton. This is an important round full Germany to get them back
:25:17. > :25:25.in the team pecking order. Still clear at the moment. The first horse
:25:26. > :25:37.that has not touched that bamboo fence. He has got his ears pricked,
:25:38. > :25:41.still galloping freely and well. A good line again from the Olympic
:25:42. > :25:48.champion. He is defending his title on the horse he won on in London. In
:25:49. > :25:53.London he was 11th overnight after cross-country and client with a
:25:54. > :25:59.brilliant clear round to win it. One has to remember this is a three
:26:00. > :26:07.phase sport. It is an all-round test of horse and rider, it is what it is
:26:08. > :26:15.all about. This horse is going to cruise home. No problem, he is
:26:16. > :26:23.flying. He is still charging on, and Michael is saying, hang on. Over 14
:26:24. > :26:26.seconds inside the time, incredible. He looked a bit patchy and rough and
:26:27. > :26:32.sketchy at the beginning, but Michael Jung, in spite of all he has
:26:33. > :26:37.one, felt under a huge amount of pressure. Sandra Auffarth had 20
:26:38. > :26:41.penalties, said he was under pressure to come up with the goods.
:26:42. > :26:51.You are probably frustrated? Yes, disappointing to be up there and
:26:52. > :26:57.mess it up. But I hope he is OK, life goes on. So far, Team GB are
:26:58. > :27:03.not doing what we dreamt of. In terms of that fence and on the
:27:04. > :27:06.Holocaust, it is such a compromise between covering the ground quickly,
:27:07. > :27:13.but the lines are so tight -- on the whole course. I did not think it was
:27:14. > :27:20.tight for him, it was my fault. I let him come to freely. He is such a
:27:21. > :27:23.genuine horse. In terms of the team, what information can you give to
:27:24. > :27:29.Pepper, who is a seasoned professional, and Kitty? They are
:27:30. > :27:38.both true professionals, they know what is going on. I will tell them
:27:39. > :27:40.if they ask, but it is between me and Yogi, he will relay what he
:27:41. > :27:45.wants to. Disappointment is etched on his
:27:46. > :27:51.face, it has hindered his individual chances, because the run out at the
:27:52. > :27:56.ski jump section means he dropped from first to 11th overall, with
:27:57. > :28:00.half the field still to go. As he alluded to, it is the top three
:28:01. > :28:05.scores in the eventing that count, so there is no pressure on the
:28:06. > :28:11.decaying and Pippa Funnell, who will go shortly. We will keep you up to
:28:12. > :28:18.date. I bring you better news from the men's shooting. It is in the
:28:19. > :28:22.trap, it is claimed, with a shotgun, the single trap. Four years ago it
:28:23. > :28:27.was Peter Wilson who won in the double trap, shooting at who
:28:28. > :28:31.different ways, this is just the single, and it is Ed Ling, from
:28:32. > :28:36.Taunton, who has made it through in second place to this evening's
:28:37. > :28:42.semifinal, his third Olympics, he has come 25th and 21st, so this is a
:28:43. > :28:48.significant improvement. Real chances for him. He is thrilled with
:28:49. > :28:53.his progress today. 7pm your time, he will go in the semifinal. We are
:28:54. > :28:57.taking due to the Aquatic Centre, some of the biggest names in the
:28:58. > :29:05.sport are in the pool, Michael Phelps, Chad Le Clos, Federica
:29:06. > :29:10.Pellegrini, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor. Plenty for Helen and her guests to
:29:11. > :29:14.get their teeth into. Good afternoon. Plenty to get
:29:15. > :29:18.excited about at the last night, two medals for Team GB. Today we see
:29:19. > :29:24.some bright stars, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, but before we get to that,
:29:25. > :29:32.the women's 200 meter freestyle, it is stacked. This is going to be one
:29:33. > :29:36.of the toughest events, Federica Pellegrini, Missy Franklin, Katie
:29:37. > :29:41.Ledecky, Sarah back in the pool. It is all about making the semifinals
:29:42. > :29:46.tonight. Two of those ladies got world records last night. They
:29:47. > :29:51.smashed them. The interesting thing will be if you look back at Katie
:29:52. > :29:54.Ledecky's form, she has not lost in three years at a major
:29:55. > :30:02.championships, and she is smashing world records. You have Sarah
:30:03. > :30:05.Sjostrom going from the butterfly. We have not seen the best of Missy
:30:06. > :30:11.Franklin for a few years. It will be interesting.
:30:12. > :30:19.Lets see how she gets on in the heats. Andy, Adrian, over to you.
:30:20. > :30:30.COMMENTATOR: Women's freestyle and the big swimmers starting to come
:30:31. > :30:36.through. The world record holder, Federica Pellegrini. Missy Franklin,
:30:37. > :30:48.too. She didn't have the best trials. The 14-year-old leading the
:30:49. > :30:55.lane. The beautiful stroke, nearest your camera. A catch up stroke. It
:30:56. > :31:01.is a bit of a drill that you do. Very effective. Left arm stays there
:31:02. > :31:08.while the right arm gets to it. Quite strong.
:31:09. > :31:23.At the halfway mark, China way out in the lead.
:31:24. > :31:43.Stopover on the far side. Look at those legs. It is like a motor. 0.25
:31:44. > :31:50.seconds now, Pellegrini well known for a strong finish. 35 metres to
:31:51. > :32:00.go, 25 by the next red marker. Pellegrini is eating back the lead.
:32:01. > :32:07.Struggling in the centre of the four. It looks like it may be
:32:08. > :32:25.perfect timing for Pellegrini. She wins the first of the seeded heats.
:32:26. > :32:29.China, 1:56.7. It is a bit dangerous. The won you don't want to
:32:30. > :32:35.be fourth when there are two more heats to go. Sorry, one more heat to
:32:36. > :32:40.go. In the previous heats, there was a swimmer that went faster. 16 more
:32:41. > :32:47.swimmers and she is in fifth place, I think she will struggle.
:32:48. > :32:56.Pellegrini, very strong. She should make the semi, I think. I think
:32:57. > :33:08.there are four in each heats, 12 or 13. Pellegrini sticking her tongue
:33:09. > :33:15.out at somebody. Not us, I hope. There is the world record holder.
:33:16. > :33:18.That is the shape of the fastest woman in history in the 200 metres
:33:19. > :33:32.freestyle. Fantastic. Fourth is a dangerous place to
:33:33. > :33:41.finish. Should be OK for the semifinals. Some quick semis to
:33:42. > :33:45.come, and this next one will be fascinating. This is the race where
:33:46. > :33:52.the sprinters go up and the distance comes down and they meet in the
:33:53. > :34:04.middle. The great Katie Ledecky taking the gold in the 400 metres
:34:05. > :34:09.freestyle last night. Ledecky has been working hard on the sprint. She
:34:10. > :34:13.has the white cap on, the dark blue tracksuit and the dark goggles.
:34:14. > :34:27.Still focused. She has a gold and silver medal already. She is walking
:34:28. > :34:33.quite slowly and carefully. Great experience for Eleanor Faulkner in
:34:34. > :34:44.lane eight. Max Litchfield, we saw get fourth place on day one will
:34:45. > :34:52.stop brilliant swim. Katie Ledecky there. Three gold medals, maybe
:34:53. > :34:59.four. She has a chance to defend an Olympic title before she is 20. She
:35:00. > :35:09.is still in high school, just graduated from high school. Amazing.
:35:10. > :35:16.Katie Ledecky in four. Eleanor Faulkner in eight.
:35:17. > :35:23.Heat five of six of the women's 200 meter freestyle. Eleanor Faulkner
:35:24. > :35:38.closest to us. The great Katie Ledecky in four for the US. Four and
:35:39. > :35:42.five, you already have gold medals at these Olympic Games. Of day
:35:43. > :35:53.three. You mentioned the distance guys
:35:54. > :36:04.coming down, so we talk about Katie Ledecky having more sprint in her. .
:36:05. > :36:08.We have just seen Pellegrini and the others are coming down to meet her
:36:09. > :36:20.in the middle. Pellegrini set that world record.
:36:21. > :36:28.She is working quite hard down this third 50 metres. She pushed pretty
:36:29. > :36:30.hard, that first 100. I thought she would have gone relatively
:36:31. > :36:35.comfortable and then picked it up. Clearly wants to get rid of the swim
:36:36. > :36:39.last night to make sure she is right on form and going well. Doesn't she
:36:40. > :36:43.look good? Just to stick with the group in the first 50 and then
:36:44. > :36:48.extend it. She was very focused when she came in. What these great
:36:49. > :36:53.multiple swimmers do, they are able to reset themselves each swim and
:36:54. > :36:57.treat each one as it comes and don't look beyond that. The same routine,
:36:58. > :37:03.the same pattern happens for each of those swimmers. It is the perfect
:37:04. > :37:07.spearhead, just about, extending the lead a tiny bit but that is a
:37:08. > :37:10.wonderful lead swim. If you weren't sure whether she could come back
:37:11. > :37:14.after winning the 400 metres freestyle and her world record last
:37:15. > :37:19.night, she has absolutely blown the field away with a 1:55.0. It was
:37:20. > :37:28.frightening, it looked special. She worked hard, but I'm sure that will
:37:29. > :37:33.be a 1.54 or 1.53 in the final. Breathing hard, as expected. It is
:37:34. > :37:40.right on the cost of two short for her. They wouldn't have had her on
:37:41. > :37:48.the four times 100 free unless she was in great spread form.
:37:49. > :37:53.Streamlined as they entered the water, every single technical small
:37:54. > :37:59.part of the race is taken care of with swimmers at this level. We know
:38:00. > :38:03.a lot of age groups watched this and I hopefully inspired. Don't just be
:38:04. > :38:09.inspired to swim up and down training lengths. The start, the
:38:10. > :38:13.streamlining, everything your coach tells you that you don't want to
:38:14. > :38:17.listen to, you should listen. I was blown away in the States with the
:38:18. > :38:21.amount of technical stuff they do, the stroke technique they do in the
:38:22. > :38:30.training sessions. It is not just all about the length and distance.
:38:31. > :38:47.So which technical focus. The second to last heat, Katie Ledecky wins it.
:38:48. > :38:54.He's doing that dance that you did last night. He's got the same hat. I
:38:55. > :39:05.was more energetic than that when Adam Peaty one. It was a dad dance,
:39:06. > :39:14.mate. It was, and I am proud of it. Don't tell me you have better shapes
:39:15. > :39:19.than that. I will show you. Actually... We should take you up on
:39:20. > :39:23.that. Let's get the commentator camera on and sees both shapes
:39:24. > :39:34.thrown by Mr Moorhouse. Final heat...
:39:35. > :39:44.You talked about the sprinters coming up to the 200s and here we
:39:45. > :39:48.have Sarah Sjostrom with the fastest time in the world. But she didn't
:39:49. > :39:55.submit to the European Championships. She hasn't submitted
:39:56. > :40:02.to the last two major meet. She busted the fastest time in the world
:40:03. > :40:06.and in is in the fastest heat. It didn't feature in the Championships,
:40:07. > :40:12.which is why she didn't submit. There are two Brazilians in this in
:40:13. > :40:15.lane seven and eight. Don't think they will contend for the semis, but
:40:16. > :40:21.it is always possible with the crowd like this. I think at the worlds it
:40:22. > :40:25.didn't fit into her programme and it wasn't her favoured event so she
:40:26. > :40:29.decided not to. The Europeans, she might have swung the heats and then
:40:30. > :40:39.decided to go home to her Olympic training camp. She is fastest in the
:40:40. > :40:44.world. Having got the 100 fly out of the way last night, she can relax.
:40:45. > :40:51.Gold medal, world record in her favourite event. World-record,
:40:52. > :40:57.stunning. 1:52.9. She got the world record last night. I was going to
:40:58. > :41:04.say, 1.52, maybe. She needs to go 1.4 second lifetime best. It is
:41:05. > :41:09.possible. Heat number six, the final heat of the women's 200 meter
:41:10. > :41:13.freestyle. Sarah Sjostrom in the centre probably had the worst start.
:41:14. > :41:17.She looked like she was using a flight swim at start. She went deep
:41:18. > :41:30.and lower. Not sure that was advisable. Still, she is leading the
:41:31. > :41:34.group out with lane three, Shen. She made the final last year. She goes
:41:35. > :41:51.out quickly on the world record sprint. Pellegrini went incredibly
:41:52. > :41:56.fast. Sjostrom I'm sure has released so many demons by winning the gold
:41:57. > :41:59.medal last night. She was fourth at the Olympics four years ago, fourth
:42:00. > :42:05.in the relay on the first night here. She finally has an Olympic
:42:06. > :42:12.gold medal. She turns first, 56.2. Pity much what Katie Ledecky turned
:42:13. > :42:20.in. The Brazilian closest to us going very well indeed, Lyrio. This
:42:21. > :42:29.is a surprise, she could make the semis. She needs to keep it going
:42:30. > :42:37.for the last length. Bonnet is going well, as well. Lyrio has left her
:42:38. > :42:44.team-mate behind. The crowd are urging her on. They need a top three
:42:45. > :42:48.finish to have a time where they are getting into the final. Sjostrom
:42:49. > :42:55.looking really strong after the exertions of last night. Looking
:42:56. > :43:10.really good indeed. Coming back in lane three is Shen of China. We will
:43:11. > :43:15.have to wait to see whether she has done it. Sjostrom was looking so
:43:16. > :43:19.tense and nervous before this started. I'm sure the weight of
:43:20. > :43:26.expectation from Sweden on her shoulders, would she probably win a
:43:27. > :43:31.gold? One that we probably gave to her. She is probably a lot more
:43:32. > :43:36.relaxed and you can see it in the way she holds herself as she walks
:43:37. > :43:45.out for the race. It is going to be a fascinating final, it really is.
:43:46. > :43:53.Sjostrom meets Katie Ledecky, meets Pellegrini, the world record-holder,
:43:54. > :43:56.and I wonder what will happen. The final is tomorrow. Not this evening.
:43:57. > :44:06.The Brazilians really get into this, in the crowd. The right-hand side of
:44:07. > :44:17.their... I don't know if you had the massive cheer, but that is because a
:44:18. > :44:25.Brazilian has made the semifinal. Lyrio, well done. Top 16, one .5
:44:26. > :44:44.7.4. Only one swimmer under 1.58 didn't make it.
:44:45. > :44:53.The qualifiers into the semifinal... Katie Ledecky looked comfortable.
:44:54. > :44:59.Sjostrom comfortable. Pellegrini is in there. The big four, the big
:45:00. > :45:03.five, will be in the centre lanes. Missy Franklin down in 12th,
:45:04. > :45:07.goodness me, did not look good at all. That is the end of the 200
:45:08. > :45:11.meter freestyle. Looking forward to the next stuff.
:45:12. > :45:18.Georgia Coates and Ellie Faulkner failing to make it through. The
:45:19. > :45:24.swimming heat continue on the Red Button.
:45:25. > :45:28.We are back to you for the 200 butterfly in the men's shortly, but
:45:29. > :45:37.let's get you up to date with what is going on in the rowing. We are
:45:38. > :45:43.catching up. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning squeaked over the
:45:44. > :45:47.line, but let's look at the men's four. There has been a dynasty
:45:48. > :45:53.established, Great Britain going for a fiscal medal in a row, since Steve
:45:54. > :45:55.Redgrave won his fifth. We'll be dynasty continue? This is their
:45:56. > :46:05.first outing, in the third heat. This could be the best British four
:46:06. > :46:10.ever, and that is saying something, given the pedigree of what has gone
:46:11. > :46:17.before. Great Britain in lane number four, this is the final hate in the
:46:18. > :46:22.men's heavyweight coxless four. They know what has gone before, they know
:46:23. > :46:24.the expectation on them, but they dismissed it, because they know the
:46:25. > :46:32.ability within this crew is something special. Greece in lane
:46:33. > :46:41.one, France in two, South Africa in three, Great Britain closest to us
:46:42. > :46:45.in four. The winners in this event at's and Lucerne, this is the engine
:46:46. > :46:52.room that came out of the eight last year. So strong and sharp and big.
:46:53. > :46:58.They will have known the competition, that they will have the
:46:59. > :47:02.better of them over 2000 metres. What do they tell the crew in the
:47:03. > :47:07.opening heat? Don't make the race faster than it needs today. South
:47:08. > :47:13.Africa have gone out harder, they will pay for that later. The British
:47:14. > :47:19.just need to do whatever they will do for the first 500 metres, don't
:47:20. > :47:26.change their plan. The fundamental thing he will nail into them, don't
:47:27. > :47:31.let your speed drop too much. If they can match and get close to
:47:32. > :47:38.their speed in the first and second, they will destroy the opposition. If
:47:39. > :47:42.you can have a high boat speed through the middle as a metres, that
:47:43. > :47:47.is when you will destroy the Italians and Australians. They will
:47:48. > :48:03.take the lead now, then you have no chance. A nice shot of Constantine
:48:04. > :48:10.Louloudis, and George Nash is a long, flowing, relaxed character,
:48:11. > :48:13.and as the rhythm to develop. Behind him, Mohamed Sbihi, one of the best
:48:14. > :48:18.athletes out there. He is the strongest athlete Britain has ever
:48:19. > :48:30.produced. George Nash is stronger than Ted Foster. Technically and
:48:31. > :48:34.physically, they are far better. They did not make the race faster
:48:35. > :48:38.than it needed to be in the opening 500 metres, and now they are taking
:48:39. > :48:45.it on. They will not want to leave any doubt, they will not want to do
:48:46. > :48:49.anything in the last 500 metres. From now until 1500 metres they will
:48:50. > :48:56.open the gates of hell. 1000 coming up already. That is a sensational
:48:57. > :49:03.second 500 metres. The British crew are clear. They will move out
:49:04. > :49:08.without any extra work. It is all in the third 500 about being efficient
:49:09. > :49:13.but fruitless. You will not meet four more ruthless people. Alex
:49:14. > :49:20.Gregory is ruthless when he is backing up his guys. Making the
:49:21. > :49:25.calls from the bow seat. Mohamed Sbihi the monster. Long and loose.
:49:26. > :49:33.George Nash at three. Constantine Louloudis driving them on. South
:49:34. > :49:39.Africa in three, France in two, Greece in one. This is the race for
:49:40. > :49:47.second place. South Africa, France and Greece. They will have to pan
:49:48. > :49:51.back to get the British. The British from 500 metres until 1500 metres,
:49:52. > :49:57.this is where they open a world of pain on the opposition. If you look
:49:58. > :50:02.at the relaxation of the rhythm, it is different from the Australians,
:50:03. > :50:09.it is more powerful. As far as the Italians go, it is more powerful.
:50:10. > :50:15.They are in a different race now. It has been worth the wait.
:50:16. > :50:20.Sensational. Coming up towards 1500 metres. They will not let up. They
:50:21. > :50:27.will hold where they are now and look to get the distance increased.
:50:28. > :50:32.The coach of the Great Britain top boat in the men's four, his boys
:50:33. > :50:39.living up to the expectation. Pushing them on hard. 500 to go,
:50:40. > :50:47.they are moving on, without having to be challenged. Great Britain
:50:48. > :50:52.inlay and four. Everybody else racing for the other two
:50:53. > :50:59.qualification spots. Greece in lane one, France in two, South Africa in
:51:00. > :51:03.three. They are taking four strokes a minute less than the opposition.
:51:04. > :51:08.They will maintain the speed they did in the first 1500 metres, no
:51:09. > :51:14.need for them to sprint to the line, the others will sprint, but it will
:51:15. > :51:20.not make them as fast as Britain. It is a scary and impressive display.
:51:21. > :51:28.37 strokes per minute, Constantine Louloudis has the British four
:51:29. > :51:32.coming in. The water will not disturb the British crew, it is a
:51:33. > :51:36.job well done. They were asked to lay down a marker, a benchmark for
:51:37. > :51:44.the rest of the world, they have done that and more, without having
:51:45. > :51:48.to raise it. 75 out from the line. They are starting to ease a bit. A
:51:49. > :51:55.look over the shoulder from Mohamed Sbihi. The British crowd are
:51:56. > :52:00.appreciating this. This is only the heat. Safely through to the
:52:01. > :52:06.semifinal. They have made a big opening statement. The statement is,
:52:07. > :52:07.Great Britain are back, they are here to look to defend their 2012
:52:08. > :52:16.Olympic title. Pretty emphatic, very impressive,
:52:17. > :52:20.Steve Redgrave has fond memories of this event, this is the one in which
:52:21. > :52:25.you claim your fifth gold medal. When you look at the succession
:52:26. > :52:30.planning, Great Britain going for a fiscal medal in a row, how much of a
:52:31. > :52:34.success is due to the fact that there has been a progression who
:52:35. > :52:39.have carried on? I would like to say my memory is as good as that, but I
:52:40. > :52:47.can't remember 16 years ago! Success breeds success. With the same
:52:48. > :52:50.support team in hand, they have a formula of how to produce great
:52:51. > :52:54.athletes coming through. That is what they have done each year.
:52:55. > :52:59.Whichever boat the top guys are put in, the eight win the World
:53:00. > :53:07.Championships, the four should win this year. The Australians looked
:53:08. > :53:10.very impressive in their heat, the Italians won theirs. The Italians
:53:11. > :53:16.were working harder, but all three boats were around the same time, so
:53:17. > :53:21.there is hard work to do. But they have set the scene. They were the
:53:22. > :53:26.most impressive out of the three. The psychology is fascinating, such
:53:27. > :53:30.an emphatic margin, contrasted with Helen and Heather in the women's
:53:31. > :53:36.pair, does that give you a few causes for concern, the manner of
:53:37. > :53:39.the victory today? Very much so, they have not come down yet, they
:53:40. > :53:44.will come in shortly for me to interview them. We will get their
:53:45. > :53:49.spin on it, but that. What we were expecting, we were expecting the
:53:50. > :53:54.medals to be between America, New Zealand and rate Britain, and Great
:53:55. > :54:01.Britain have not been beaten before, we expected them to dominate the
:54:02. > :54:08.heat, not scrape through. There is a concern. I want to find out what
:54:09. > :54:11.their story is. Your day is done. Our James Bond wannabe, you can
:54:12. > :54:19.enjoy something shaken and not stirred. It was nice to be in the
:54:20. > :54:25.same line, but I am not taking over from Daniel Craig. I am taking over
:54:26. > :54:29.from John Inverdale! White and saying nothing, otherwise I will get
:54:30. > :54:36.into big trouble! Straight back to the Aquatic Centre. We will feature
:54:37. > :54:41.one of the key races of the swimming meet, the men's 200 metres
:54:42. > :54:45.butterfly, the one that gave us a fantastic race in London, Chad Le
:54:46. > :54:50.Clos against Michael Phelps. Chad Le Clos is in the first heat we will
:54:51. > :54:56.see, let's see how he fares, it has been a turbulent build-up, out of
:54:57. > :54:57.his parents not well, including his effervescent father, but they are
:54:58. > :55:09.here to watch him. Chad Le Clos, the defending
:55:10. > :55:13.champion, in lane four, the second heat of the men's 200 metres
:55:14. > :55:21.butterfly. There are some quick men around him, Masato Sakai. I think
:55:22. > :55:30.Tom Shields will try to do a job on him. Chad Le Clos has an interesting
:55:31. > :55:36.situation. He is try to qualify for the semifinal, this event is his
:55:37. > :55:43.best chance. How much effort you put in, because he is in the 200
:55:44. > :55:48.freestyle final later. I like to see him looking around every now and
:55:49. > :55:52.again as he gets closer to the end of the race, to see where he is
:55:53. > :55:58.placed. Checking where the rest of the field are. Just exert enough
:55:59. > :56:10.effort. We think it causes him more effort, but he likes to see where he
:56:11. > :56:15.is. He has not turned first. Daniil Pakhomov was the first to turn. It
:56:16. > :56:18.is difficult to swim medium pace or slower, because it changes the
:56:19. > :56:23.timing of your stroke. It changes the body position. Your feet sink a
:56:24. > :56:30.bit. When you go fast, your body is flat. When you go slower, you can
:56:31. > :56:38.have your hips and feet sink, and it is harder to sing. -- to swim. It
:56:39. > :56:45.comes naturally to have a quick left and right. He is leading the race.
:56:46. > :56:51.He is the master of this. A quick look to the right. He is leading
:56:52. > :57:00.this one. He is still looking around. Another look. He will just
:57:01. > :57:06.about when. My goodness. It would be great to look around like that and
:57:07. > :57:18.have a couple of sandwiches and go 1:50 5.50 seven.
:57:19. > :57:28.Michael Phelps in lane four. This is the heard -- the third heat of four.
:57:29. > :57:36.He has got a white hat, in the centre. Daiya Seto has the blackout,
:57:37. > :57:43.he has the audacity to be taking him out! It is helpful that Michael has
:57:44. > :57:49.put a white cap on. But Daiya Seto taking out Michael Phelps. We saw
:57:50. > :57:55.this in the 400 medley. Staying a lot longer underwater than Michael.
:57:56. > :57:59.Very interesting. He is out kicking him on the turn. He had a very
:58:00. > :58:06.strong butterfly leg in the 400 medley. Two lengths after the turn.
:58:07. > :58:15.Michael Phelps doing enough on his shoulder. Grand opening of Australia
:58:16. > :58:20.going in first. It is very pedestrian from Michael Phelps, very
:58:21. > :58:24.comfortable in deed. 55.3, but it looks like he could have stopped and
:58:25. > :58:29.had a cup of tea and a chat and turned around. He looks really
:58:30. > :58:35.comfortable. He is starting to wind it up now. He does not do average or
:58:36. > :58:39.slow very well. His technique is a bit different when he is going
:58:40. > :58:53.slower, but now he is starting to move. The race is at the top. From
:58:54. > :59:01.two to six, sorry, two to five. Grant Irvine keeping the lead, but
:59:02. > :59:10.three and four coming through. Beautiful. He is swimming away. He
:59:11. > :59:16.has an awkward looking stroke. His timing is slightly off, but his last
:59:17. > :59:26.50 was very good. I am sure that Michael Phelps knew what he was
:59:27. > :59:32.doing. He did not react to Tamas Kenderesi?. I think it is brilliant.
:59:33. > :59:38.Tamas Kenderesi? making a good transition from 2014, the junior
:59:39. > :59:49.championships. He won the -- he has taken down Michael Phelps.
:59:50. > :59:58.This was the very first length, I believe. Just coming towards the
:59:59. > :00:02.end, Kenderesi extending the lead in the last five metres. Just to the
:00:03. > :00:12.right of Michael Phelps in the centre. Nice stretch, nice finish
:00:13. > :00:17.will stop Michael Phelps, not bad, either. Not easy to swim average
:00:18. > :00:22.pace. He didn't swim that well at the American trials on the 200 fly,
:00:23. > :00:26.Michael Phelps, his 200 was a bit ropey. He wasn't particularly happy
:00:27. > :00:29.with it. He needs to swim faster if he is to win tomorrow night.
:00:30. > :00:42.Kenderesi wins it. Seto will certainly be true to the
:00:43. > :00:49.semifinals tonight. Comfortable from Michael Phelps. Comfortable, but he
:00:50. > :00:52.will have some work to do. I cannot wait to see how Laszlo Cseh is
:00:53. > :01:00.swimming. He is my favourite for this one. That final tomorrow night
:01:01. > :01:13.will be an absolute corker. Those three men, and there you are
:01:14. > :01:17.looking at Laszlo Cseh, the only three men to have gone under 1.5
:01:18. > :01:26.forces the London Olympic Games. Both capable. -- 1.54 since the
:01:27. > :01:46.London games. If he goes 1:52.9, he could well win
:01:47. > :01:58.it. The Olympic Games was only when in 1:52.6. 1:52.9... I think Laszlo
:01:59. > :02:08.Cseh could be faster. B is my favourite, he is my man. The
:02:09. > :02:15.Hungarian from Hungary. Last heat of the men's 200 fly. Laszlo Cseh, the
:02:16. > :02:25.30-year-old in lane four. The bald head of Hungary. We've seen 1.54 and
:02:26. > :02:28.1.55 so far. The big guys in the centre should be comfortable. Very
:02:29. > :02:34.good start from David Morgan of Australia up in lane two. Laszlo
:02:35. > :02:41.Cseh with the ball head in the centre. David Morgan is the nephew
:02:42. > :02:50.of Rob Morgan, a British diver. Welsh. I found that out from Leon
:02:51. > :02:54.Taylor at breakfast this morning. Himself an Olympic silver medallist.
:02:55. > :03:04.It is amazing what nuggets you pick up after cornflakes. The Brazilian
:03:05. > :03:13.in sixth going very well, Leonardo de Deus. He is pleasing the crowd.
:03:14. > :03:21.Laszlo Cseh looking comfortable in the centre. Brazil first. Look at
:03:22. > :03:26.this. Columbia second, Poland third. What a great first 100 metres. The
:03:27. > :03:36.crowd is mooring their approval about the opening 100 metres. --
:03:37. > :03:43.you expect lane three and four to come back, but I would love to see
:03:44. > :03:52.this guy hold onto this lead. 50 metres to go at that turn and
:03:53. > :03:56.Leonardo de Deus is first. The rest of the field is starting to reel him
:03:57. > :04:05.in. Still going well with the yellow head. The world champion, Laszlo
:04:06. > :04:10.Cseh, in fourth. Let's hope he can hold on. This is a brave 200 fly.
:04:11. > :04:15.Swimming like this really hurts. Laszlo Cseh will win the final heat.
:04:16. > :04:21.It looked comfortable, 1:55.1, around with the or that big guys.
:04:22. > :04:25.They will all be safely through to the semifinal. The two Brazilians
:04:26. > :04:31.might make it through. It is very good indeed for them. He is sucking
:04:32. > :04:34.in the air. Laszlo Cseh has worked hard on that one, having to bring
:04:35. > :04:41.back the second hundred metres will stop can he dropped two seconds? Is
:04:42. > :04:46.he looking worried? I'm not sure. You analyse your race immediately,
:04:47. > :04:52.ESP link it, he has seen the time. He knows exactly how... He knows the
:04:53. > :04:55.time, how it felt, and you analyse those two things together and you
:04:56. > :05:06.get out of the water. There is a bit of concern there. The timing of his
:05:07. > :05:09.stroke I'm worried about. Look at the distance between his chin and
:05:10. > :05:14.the water, much too much. He can go flatter. Too much energy to go high
:05:15. > :05:19.and he can use a lot more of that is to take him forward, propel him
:05:20. > :05:22.forward. His energy systems are going slightly in the wrong
:05:23. > :05:31.direction at the moment. Having said that, 1.55 is not bad at all.
:05:32. > :05:39.Interesting. Lot more slight than some other swimmers in physique.
:05:40. > :05:46.The world, European champion Tom Laszlo Cseh wins it. The two
:05:47. > :05:54.Brazilians, I think may well make it. Let's see who is through to the
:05:55. > :06:06.semifinals. They will be split in the first and
:06:07. > :06:11.second semifinal. Michael Phelps, pretty standard. It is going to be a
:06:12. > :06:13.great semifinal. That final tomorrow night! Very good indeed. Two
:06:14. > :06:29.Brazilians in there, as well. Ding, ding, ding. Round one of the
:06:30. > :06:39.Michael Phelps contest is over. It's not just about those two. Laszlo
:06:40. > :06:43.Cseh, Michael Phelps, Chad. What do you make of it? They'll swim in
:06:44. > :06:47.different ways. Michael Phelps looked sharp. In his favourite
:06:48. > :06:53.events, the 200 fly, he looked heavy. He could see the contrast in
:06:54. > :06:58.strokes there. Chad has the final tonight and always plays in the
:06:59. > :07:05.heats. Michael, 200 fly is never easy anyway, it is hard to read too
:07:06. > :07:08.much into it. I think Stefani looks the best. We saw him at the European
:07:09. > :07:16.Championships earlier in the year, buzz today the nominal time. -- I
:07:17. > :07:20.think Laszlo Cseh looks best. He must be the only person in the world
:07:21. > :07:28.he was disappointed that Michael Phelps has come out of retirement.
:07:29. > :07:38.Anyone in this event, when he makes a comeback would be a bit like, oh,
:07:39. > :07:42.really? Laszlo has come fourth or fifth on several occasions. If Jock
:07:43. > :07:48.of it hadn't been around, Andy Murray would have won lots more
:07:49. > :07:57.things. -- if Novak Djokovic hadn't been around. Let's look ahead. On
:07:58. > :08:05.BBC Two later on, we have Hannah Miley, the birthday girl. Happy
:08:06. > :08:13.birthday, Hannah. And also Schiavone. What are their chances
:08:14. > :08:16.much my Bell this is Siobhan's best event. Hannah said herself after the
:08:17. > :08:25.400, this is a fun event for hair and a bit of a bonus. Her best event
:08:26. > :08:30.is 400. Siobhan is the British girl to watch. She was in the London
:08:31. > :08:34.Olympics, as well. She has been swooning fantastically, Siobhan. Her
:08:35. > :08:38.skills, you have to credit them. There are some of the best in the
:08:39. > :08:42.world. Her start, head turns, she executes everything perfectly.
:08:43. > :08:50.Hannah was so agonisingly close to the middle the other night. Is there
:08:51. > :08:55.any chance she could be fired up, potential final Olympics, she's
:08:56. > :09:06.going to chase it? No, the 200 metres is too short for her. The 200
:09:07. > :09:10.IBM on BBC Two in a bit. -- 200 IM. Hannah Miley's besties today, and
:09:11. > :09:15.also David Florence in the canoe slalom. 34 today. He has been around
:09:16. > :09:20.a bit. He has qualified very easily for the canoe slalom single and that
:09:21. > :09:27.is for the final. Today, he is in action with his partner Richard
:09:28. > :09:32.Hounslow, with him he took silver in London. What a day that was on the
:09:33. > :09:38.Thursday. The Nasa is giddy with a Great Britain one and two back then.
:09:39. > :09:42.He has never won an Olympic gold, David Florence, and he is back to
:09:43. > :09:45.try to do so here. It is the first of two qualification runs and the
:09:46. > :09:51.fastest 11 boats that go through to the final.
:09:52. > :09:57.Big moment for Great Britain after the success yesterday. David
:09:58. > :10:03.Florence, their peers. His birthday today. 34 years. Richard Hounslow is
:10:04. > :10:08.the same age. Looking to continue their run of form. The world
:10:09. > :10:12.champions back in 2013. Didn't go their way in deep Creek, but they
:10:13. > :10:18.produced a blisteringly fast time in Lea Valley, but too many penalties
:10:19. > :10:24.putting them off the podium. Certainly medal potential, but they
:10:25. > :10:29.have come here for one colour only. They certainly have. Looking very
:10:30. > :10:34.controlled at the moment. Richard in the back turning the boat round.
:10:35. > :10:42.This is where we see a few tricky bits. 1.17 up on the split so far.
:10:43. > :10:47.You see Richard putting the steering straight. The back man often looks
:10:48. > :10:52.like he is not working as hard, but he puts in so much effort in each of
:10:53. > :10:57.those turning strokes. The first tricky sequence through 14. Watch
:10:58. > :11:01.the power required from 14 to 15. Have to make sure they get across.
:11:02. > :11:06.No problem at all. Good boat work again. Down towards 17. The gate on
:11:07. > :11:16.the left. Six upstream gates on this course of 24. Looking extremely
:11:17. > :11:19.composed. Looking for the lines. A superb run from Richard and David.
:11:20. > :11:28.Now they have to get this bit right and they are going for the spin, as
:11:29. > :11:31.predicted. They can drive through 21 and injured 22. It will be
:11:32. > :11:35.interesting to see how many crews adopt that move. Those starting
:11:36. > :11:40.later will keep half an eye on what is going on, try to learn as much as
:11:41. > :11:44.they can. One gate to go for Florence and Hounslow. This is
:11:45. > :11:56.reminiscent of David Florence's first he'd run yesterday in the C1.
:11:57. > :12:01.1:07.70 one. Now they have the option of sitting out the second
:12:02. > :12:05.heat. Absolutely. This is where they went for the spin. You spend a lot
:12:06. > :12:08.of time looking at it, taking no risks at all. They knew they didn't
:12:09. > :12:15.need to take any because they executed it so well. First clean run
:12:16. > :12:18.of the day. We are yet to find out whether they will go in the second
:12:19. > :12:22.run. David Florence opted not to go in the second run of the singles, so
:12:23. > :12:25.it could be they are through to the semifinals in style. It looks like
:12:26. > :12:29.that performers will certainly be good enough to qualify. We are just
:12:30. > :12:32.about to hop over onto BBC Two, but before we go, a reminder of the
:12:33. > :12:41.headlines so far on day three in Rio. Britain's all conquering
:12:42. > :12:48.women's pair, Helen Glover antenna starling want made to scrap in their
:12:49. > :12:53.heat but scraped the win. Britain's overnight leader William Fox-Pitt in
:12:54. > :12:57.the eventing saw his hopes of an individual medal fade after a
:12:58. > :13:04.disappointing cross-country display. He slipped down the standings. A
:13:05. > :13:11.very brave fight between the first British boxer to exit the
:13:12. > :13:14.competition here. He was joined by Ireland's Paddy Barnes after the
:13:15. > :13:19.two-time Olympic bronze medallist suffered a shock defeat in his
:13:20. > :13:22.opening out. That really was a is a price. A bit of a turn-up the books
:13:23. > :13:27.for Paddy Barnes and Ireland. That is how it stands at the midway
:13:28. > :13:31.point. It is two o'clock in our afternoon, and 6pm where you are.
:13:32. > :13:37.There is so much more to come, including the men's team gymnastics
:13:38. > :13:43.later in your evening. We will be back with Hannah Miley on BBC Two.
:13:44. > :13:44.Will she be smiley Meili in the 200 metres individual medley? We will
:13:45. > :13:47.see very shortly?
