:00:20. > :00:27.Welcome back to Rio where we are bringing you live coverage of the

:00:28. > :00:33.Olympic Games 2016 of the men's synchronised ten-metre platform. Tom

:00:34. > :00:39.Daley and Daniel Goodfellow. We are at the Maria Lenk centre, the first

:00:40. > :00:43.woman to compete in the Olympic Games in 1932. I will hand you over

:00:44. > :00:57.to our commentators. Welcome to you joining us on BBC

:00:58. > :01:11.Two. This is the start of the ten metres synchro. This is Shleikher

:01:12. > :01:15.and Minibaev. The Russians opening up this second diving competition of

:01:16. > :01:21.these Olympic Games. Inward dive in the pike position. Limited degree of

:01:22. > :01:27.difficulty, these are the easiest dives we will see performed.

:01:28. > :01:32.Execution marks for the Russians will be 8.5 and nine. The

:01:33. > :01:35.synchronisation will probably be lower. They were out of line as they

:01:36. > :01:44.entered the water. The judges marks will appear on the screen. Lines

:01:45. > :01:51.through doesn't count, and bobs rule of thumb, if it is 50, it's good.

:01:52. > :01:58.They've gone over that. We will get a few around 51 and above. This is a

:01:59. > :02:04.very stacked field. Germany, E Mexico, USA, China and Great Britain

:02:05. > :02:08.going last, which might be beneficial for Daley and Goodfellow.

:02:09. > :02:14.Six rounds of dives, five for the women, six for the men. The women's

:02:15. > :02:22.event taking place tomorrow. Here come Hausding and Klein. All 2.0.

:02:23. > :02:27.Very, very experienced pair. The synchronisation from the divers was

:02:28. > :02:32.spot on. The Russians opening up with an inward dive. Let's have a

:02:33. > :02:38.look at this. Rotational speed, it looks like there is one diver there.

:02:39. > :02:42.An absolute Mirror Image there. A little bit of splash from Hausding,

:02:43. > :02:54.right of screen now. The Germans will be over 50 points as well. This

:02:55. > :02:58.pair won in Olympic silver medal in 2008, and they've carried on.

:02:59. > :03:02.They've been very consistent right the way through. They will be there

:03:03. > :03:07.or thereabouts. 51 for the Germans. Now here come the boys who like to

:03:08. > :03:14.rocket just a bit. They've scaled back their ambitions. They will get

:03:15. > :03:24.up to 3.8 in the latter part of the competition. Lots of support for the

:03:25. > :03:30.Mexicans in here today. They will start up the anti-after this dive.

:03:31. > :03:35.Look at the strapping on his shoulders there. An awful lot of

:03:36. > :03:41.tape. Let's hope he doesn't fall apart when he takes it off. Garcia

:03:42. > :03:52.and Sanchez going for the Mexicans. Inward dive with pike. 2.0, the best

:03:53. > :03:56.was 51. Good, clean entry. The synchronisation was off. There is a

:03:57. > :04:01.gap in between them and I can see that in my line of sight. So, we're

:04:02. > :04:05.looking for hitting the water at the same time which doesn't quite

:04:06. > :04:09.happen. There is a slight gap between them so the judges will be

:04:10. > :04:12.no lies. That is an incredible camera shot which gives you the

:04:13. > :04:17.speed the drivers are hitting the water and. It looks quick even super

:04:18. > :04:23.slow motion. Let's wait for the scores. It is a much of a muchness

:04:24. > :04:31.for the first three pairs of divers. It is. It is 51.6 for the Mexicans.

:04:32. > :04:36.We have a gloomy, cloudy sky. No rain, it is quite humid, but it

:04:37. > :04:42.hasn't changed a great deal in the last hour. I don't think it'll

:04:43. > :04:49.change, either. There is a little bit of wind, which is getting up.

:04:50. > :04:55.There will be a little bit of a wind factor here. We move on to the man

:04:56. > :05:01.who got bronze four years ago, but a different part of this time round.

:05:02. > :05:10.Boudia partnered now by the 19-year-old, Johnson. I was watching

:05:11. > :05:16.the Americans in training, chatting to the national performance

:05:17. > :05:21.director, and this pair, because Boudia is individual champion, they

:05:22. > :05:27.will be a force to be reckoned with in that, for me, is the best

:05:28. > :05:33.opening-round dive. We will see closer to 55 on theirs. They will

:05:34. > :05:40.get nine is on execution. Yes, they do. That is textbook stuff from our

:05:41. > :05:45.pair from the USA. Pretty much nines across the board. 54 does count for

:05:46. > :05:53.the Americans. And they've set the marker down. Johnson has just turned

:05:54. > :05:58.20, by the way, partnering the 27-year-old Boudia. Now, the

:05:59. > :06:06.Ukraine, they will be up next. The music is reverberating around the

:06:07. > :06:11.reasons we don't know. Now ready to go. So, Dolhov and Gorshkovozov for

:06:12. > :06:19.the Ukraine. They are having a back dive. The first two rounds are worth

:06:20. > :06:25.2.0 degrees of difficulty. Very nice from the Ukrainians. There are two

:06:26. > :06:29.elements of this contest, the execution of the dive, so there are

:06:30. > :06:33.three judges on the side of the pool and three on the other, marking only

:06:34. > :06:39.the execution of the dive. What we see here from the Ukraine is very

:06:40. > :06:43.good execution, around about eight or 8.5. Then the synchronisation

:06:44. > :06:49.judges are split across the pool and they are looking at the timing. So,

:06:50. > :06:53.the crowd don't like that but I think that is fair execution and

:06:54. > :06:56.synchronisation. Maybe they are more of an expert then I am. I think they

:06:57. > :07:01.were getting their excitement in the early because it is the Brazilians

:07:02. > :07:08.up next. Now, this is the Brazilians now. What a wonderful panning shot

:07:09. > :07:15.their office Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre. There is a very nervous

:07:16. > :07:23.Brazilian pair. The Ukraine, that was the lowest score. Nobody has

:07:24. > :07:28.gone below 50. 50.4 for the Ukrainians. These boys might be up

:07:29. > :07:37.early on but they don't have the programme to keep it up later. It is

:07:38. > :07:44.a forward dive with pike. Excellent synchronisation. Execution is not

:07:45. > :07:49.quite as sharp as what we've seen from the previous pairs of divers so

:07:50. > :07:52.far in this competition. You can see in the slow motion, the intention is

:07:53. > :07:57.to be doing exactly the same thing at the same time as your partner.

:07:58. > :08:00.All the way down, just too much splash thrown up there so I don't

:08:01. > :08:04.think they are going to get more than eight on execution. And this

:08:05. > :08:13.partisan crowd, they can see the marks coming up! Here they come now.

:08:14. > :08:20.Not bad, all right. 49.8 is pretty decent. We took about 50 as the mark

:08:21. > :08:29.to aim for, so above that if you can but 49.8 is good. It is OK. These

:08:30. > :08:39.are the ones to watch, these are the ones to beat. World champions in

:08:40. > :08:46.2015. They've been pretty much unbeaten for the last 18 months. It

:08:47. > :08:48.is the Chinese, of course. It is Chen and Lin, forward dive with

:08:49. > :09:10.pike. Well, just super skilful all the way

:09:11. > :09:16.through. Execution, bang on. Might -- nine .5s all the way.

:09:17. > :09:19.Synchronisation is perfect. We will see the Chinese topping the

:09:20. > :09:24.leaderboard right from the word go. Will they stay there? Look at that,

:09:25. > :09:30.super slow motion, all the way, perfect alignment. Their bow is

:09:31. > :09:36.slightly off but that isn't judged. So, slightly off with their

:09:37. > :09:44.recognition of performance but, look at that, 57 on the nose! 57.0 zero.

:09:45. > :09:53.To be better than the Americans. Early stages, of course. We have the

:09:54. > :10:02.bigger dives to come. We have 3.8 near the end from the Mexicans.

:10:03. > :10:05.Before that, the diver from the Brits, Daley and Goodfellow opening

:10:06. > :10:10.up with an inward 1.5 somersault with pike. Everybody bar the

:10:11. > :10:18.Brazilians over 50 in their first round so a top standard already

:10:19. > :10:23.being set. Yes, solid start from our boys. What we're looking for is

:10:24. > :10:29.vertical entry with no splash. Daniel Goodfellow delivered, Tom

:10:30. > :10:32.Daley delivered. Let's get into this unaided bit more detail. Daniel

:10:33. > :10:37.Goodfellow just a little further away from the diving board meaning

:10:38. > :10:41.the judges won't give more than 8.5 on synchro. That is tough. Tough

:10:42. > :10:46.going because if they weren't perfect alignment, they would have

:10:47. > :10:54.got 9.5. Let's see if I'm right. Still good, 51 is still good. Look

:10:55. > :11:01.at those execution marks. They call him rarely wrong Taylor. Not a lot

:11:02. > :11:11.of damage, don't worry about it, early stages. 57 for China, 54 for

:11:12. > :11:20.the US, then joint third Daley and Goodfellow, and Garcia and Sanchez.

:11:21. > :11:25.So, lots of diving fans or those new to diving asking why the divers have

:11:26. > :11:32.a shower afterwards. Surely it's not time to wash their hair yet. You're

:11:33. > :11:35.right, but it is quite cold here. Diving outdoors, your divers need to

:11:36. > :11:42.keep their muscles warm. So there's a lot of downtime in between dives

:11:43. > :11:46.so you need to keep your muscles warm before you put your T-shirt and

:11:47. > :11:51.tracksuit on in between which is why the divers use the showers in

:11:52. > :11:53.between. Nothing to do with cleanliness, just comfort and

:11:54. > :12:06.keeping muscles warm so they can perform at their best. The towels

:12:07. > :12:10.just went to it. Round two, the Russians up first. Minibaev and

:12:11. > :12:16.Shleikher, forward dive from them. Mistake from the Russians. You could

:12:17. > :12:25.drive a mini car through that gap. Which means that Daley and

:12:26. > :12:30.Goodfellow made a similar error, and the Russians have made a larger

:12:31. > :12:33.error of the same, moving through the water at the same time but the

:12:34. > :12:37.different distances on the diving board means the Russians will be

:12:38. > :12:43.down. Less than 50 points is my prediction. Yes, this could be a

:12:44. > :12:48.little opening for everybody else and set the Russians back. It is

:12:49. > :12:53.only 2.0, the first two rounds, so you don't lose a lot of ground. 48.6

:12:54. > :12:59.to follow their 51, so they haven't hit three figures yet. Quite a few

:13:00. > :13:06.of the other divers will do that shortly. The ones to follow probably

:13:07. > :13:11.well. We get into the Germans who have been so consistent. We go back

:13:12. > :13:18.to the silver in Beijing, seventh in 2012. Sometimes their programme

:13:19. > :13:24.comes apart but it is early stages and they are normally very sound.

:13:25. > :13:32.Inward 1.5 somersaults for Hausding and Klein.

:13:33. > :13:40.Synchronisation is good. My co-commentator having a bit of a

:13:41. > :13:47.thought, too much splash being thrown up there so execution mark

:13:48. > :13:52.will be lower. Hausding doesn't get his grab entry. Dips his head,

:13:53. > :13:57.washes over, throws up splash and he woke to be happy with that. The

:13:58. > :14:03.marks for his dive will reflect that. So, execution, the judges went

:14:04. > :14:06.with them giving them eight but the synchronisation was affected by his

:14:07. > :14:12.over rotation. The Germans and Russians matching each other, Mark

:14:13. > :14:21.for Mark. 51 for the Germans, 51 for the Russians, and then round two, 40

:14:22. > :14:25.8.6 for the Russians and 48.6 for the Germans. The Mexicans have a

:14:26. > :14:29.great deal of support here and they are fun to watch. Sometimes they can

:14:30. > :14:34.push the envelope in the latter stages. They have rendered back a

:14:35. > :14:37.little bit, they still have the biggest dive anybody has in the

:14:38. > :14:45.programme and they will use that as their last gambit. At this stage, it

:14:46. > :14:51.is a rudimentary dive, by their standards, anyway. Garcia and

:14:52. > :14:55.Sanchez with their reverse dive. They've been working very well

:14:56. > :14:58.previously, even when they won silver in the last Olympic Games,

:14:59. > :15:03.the Mexicans have always been weak on the opening two dives. They've

:15:04. > :15:09.actually been mailing it down. And all the hard work is paying off. It

:15:10. > :15:14.looks like Garcia is being held together right across A/C joint, it

:15:15. > :15:17.is common for divers to her shoulder injuries, and he is on both

:15:18. > :15:22.shoulders, which is why they aren't doing such a complex list of dives

:15:23. > :15:26.as they often do. Credit where it's due, sticky tape knows sticky tape,

:15:27. > :15:40.they are in the mix. Garcia and Sanchez. Look at the

:15:41. > :15:48.marks coming through. Nobody has hit 50 yet in round two. Onto the

:15:49. > :15:57.Americans' second place after round one. Boudia and Steele Johnson. A

:15:58. > :16:06.fairly new combination. Starting to bed in. Things were really coming

:16:07. > :16:10.together in the World Series. For those of you wondering how

:16:11. > :16:16.synchronised divers do it, whether they are telepathic, that was

:16:17. > :16:22.confirmation as we heard one divers say, ready, one, two, three, go.

:16:23. > :16:26.Steele just out jumping the Olympic champion is likely there. They

:16:27. > :16:32.seemed to hit the water at the same time. I'm not sure what they manage

:16:33. > :16:38.to do there. He maybe was able to accelerate, a bit like Ironman.

:16:39. > :16:45.Steve Johnson -- Steele Johnson and David Boudia are in the lead. 53.404

:16:46. > :16:55.Boudia and Johnson. As the World Series went on, their

:16:56. > :17:14.preparations made good for this. Let's move on to the Ukraine. Is

:17:15. > :17:16.two, when they get it going well, let's see if they can carry on that

:17:17. > :17:31.trend with a reverse dive. Gorshkovozov and old golf. That was

:17:32. > :17:35.slightly better than the Americans. The reverse dive. Standing forward

:17:36. > :17:40.but doing exactly the same movement. They seem to get their movement...

:17:41. > :17:44.We can see whether they are touching their toes at the same time,

:17:45. > :17:50.extending at the same time, looking back and moving their arms at the

:17:51. > :17:57.same time in alignment. They do, synchronisation was good. Execution

:17:58. > :18:02.was a little bit off. Almost going inside banana that as I was drifting

:18:03. > :18:09.and watching that. There they are in the showers, warming up. That is a

:18:10. > :18:10.new dive altogether. Side banana. Would you need custard with that?

:18:11. > :18:31.Maybe! Russia finding themselves equally

:18:32. > :18:39.forth. He has just celebrated his birthday. 32 last weekend. He goes

:18:40. > :18:47.with his partner, Jackson Rondinelli, for Brazil. Reverse

:18:48. > :18:51.dive. That was good. It is good. I was watching them in training and

:18:52. > :18:58.they had a few mishaps, maybe we still have those to come. But so

:18:59. > :19:04.far, so good, that is two out of two for the host nation. They are the

:19:05. > :19:10.host nation either received an invite and quite rightly, too. This

:19:11. > :19:16.is exactly what happens. Sorry to keep laughing but you can hear the

:19:17. > :19:20.crowd as the marks are ratified. They are pretty good. I don't know

:19:21. > :19:26.what they are booing for. They wanted ten is because they are the

:19:27. > :19:33.host nation. I doubt the Chinese will...

:19:34. > :19:37.They are more likely to done the Brazilians. As we move on to the

:19:38. > :19:49.world champions from last year. It will all change and open up as

:19:50. > :19:55.after we have seen this and the Brits. These are our current

:19:56. > :20:02.leaders. Precision. Crushing the beetle as they go in. Even their

:20:03. > :20:08.Chinese coaching staff almost on their feet. Keeping calm, centred

:20:09. > :20:18.and focused. This is not the mirror image we saw in the first round. Yue

:20:19. > :20:22.Lin not quite as deep as Aisen Chen but other than that, it is pretty

:20:23. > :20:28.much perfect. The Chinese will be just a touch ahead of the American

:20:29. > :20:42.pair. If they get 57, which it looks like they have... 114 is a big

:20:43. > :20:50.mark-up. 9.5 and less counts. A nice symmetry to their score. Tom Daley

:20:51. > :20:55.and Dan Goodfellow. There is a lot involved in this but it is still the

:20:56. > :20:58.same degree of difficulty. We think they are doing a straightforward

:20:59. > :21:04.dive but this has a bit more complexity to it for Daley and

:21:05. > :21:10.Goodfellow. There is a little bit more that can go wrong. They will

:21:11. > :21:16.catch the eyes of the judges if they do it well.

:21:17. > :21:23.The reason they are doing this dive, it is a dive they need to cover, the

:21:24. > :21:26.twist group. They have been working really hard on this and that wasn't

:21:27. > :21:35.as good as I have seen it in training. Tom Daley closer, but is

:21:36. > :21:40.certainly a large motorbikes sized gap so probably 8.5 if they are

:21:41. > :21:45.lucky on the synchro. It means our boys will be ten points behind the

:21:46. > :21:50.Chinese. Maybe just a little bit more. They are still in it. No one

:21:51. > :22:00.has really dropped at this stage and the Brits are there or thereabouts.

:22:01. > :22:02.China moving clear. It is a group of four countries separated by seven.

:22:03. > :22:17.Confirmation here. Germany not getting three marks to

:22:18. > :22:25.make it to 100 and Russia join an 99.6. A long way to go still, it

:22:26. > :22:33.hasn't started yet. Four more rounds to come. You have seen 2.0 so far

:22:34. > :22:39.and we will now move into the realms of four example, Russia will do a

:22:40. > :22:43.3.4 and Germany will go to 3.2 and Mexico, 3.6, etc and all the way

:22:44. > :22:48.through. We won't see anything below 3.0 from now on. The Chinese have a

:22:49. > :22:54.bit of a lead at the moment but that can all change. We may even see

:22:55. > :22:58.close to 100 points. We will let you know when that might be happening

:22:59. > :23:03.and if it does and then a diver or a pair of divers can make a mistake

:23:04. > :23:08.and score as little as 55, 60 and you can see how changeable the

:23:09. > :23:14.leaderboard can be. Our boys are in bronze. All to play for. Give you an

:23:15. > :23:20.idea, we are into the much bigger dives territory now. 3-6, this is

:23:21. > :23:34.where things really take shape. Minibaev and Shleikher find

:23:35. > :23:42.themselves here and this is where they could make up some ground. It

:23:43. > :23:50.is impressive. The crowd an booing all the way through. I am not so

:23:51. > :23:53.impressed. That is a mediocre effort from the Russians, a much cleaner

:23:54. > :24:00.effort in training. Execution from both divers is a little off so they

:24:01. > :24:06.will only get 7.5 and eight. I have seen them score way over 90 points

:24:07. > :24:11.on this. They will be lucky if they could get mid-70s. Great facial

:24:12. > :24:18.expressions on the divers' faces as they went through in super slow

:24:19. > :24:28.motion. Here other marks. The G-force that goes on that board,

:24:29. > :24:30.slow motion really showing you. This competition right across the

:24:31. > :24:40.board... We are diving outdoors and it is the

:24:41. > :24:48.Olympic final so the Russians have set the tone. Remember, we haven't

:24:49. > :24:55.had an outdoor Olympic event since the 90s. Sydney, Athens.

:24:56. > :25:08.The Germans back, two and a half somersault with one and a half

:25:09. > :25:14.twists. Unfortunate for the Germans, synchronisation all the way. They

:25:15. > :25:22.were both short to vertical which is passable but from an execution point

:25:23. > :25:31.of view, they will only get sevens, maybe eight. Both divers short,

:25:32. > :25:37.throwing up a load of splash towards the diving board. Not what we expect

:25:38. > :25:44.from the Germans. Look at the expression on Klein's face. The

:25:45. > :25:46.girls were a little here and there yesterday. Low scoring and it is

:25:47. > :25:54.looking that way for the boys as well. Germany go into second place.

:25:55. > :26:05.Three more rounds after this. Including the silver-medallists from

:26:06. > :26:09.four years ago who really have some big dives and this is the first of

:26:10. > :26:16.them. Not as big as the one at the end but this is 3.6 degrees

:26:17. > :26:18.difficulty. Ivan Garcia and German Sanchez. When they are on it, they

:26:19. > :26:38.are on it. That is your indication, they were

:26:39. > :26:43.holding hands at the start and they moved through that very complex

:26:44. > :26:50.dive. Two and a half twists and somersaults. They were a little bit

:26:51. > :26:55.off centre but the judges do not get to see that overhead shot. You can

:26:56. > :26:59.see there, almost spinning and twisting, will the execution marks

:27:00. > :27:03.penalised them for that. Let's have a look at the schools might. Not so

:27:04. > :27:08.good. A high degree of difficulty put than just shy of 18. Put them in

:28:39. > :28:46.The Chinese have not gone yet. As indeed have not the Ukraine, they

:28:47. > :28:54.are up next. Gorshkovozov and Dolgov. Some extraneous noise from
