:00:53. > :01:00.Dave five, what are you doing to us? I'm afraid, guys, back in the UK,
:01:01. > :01:05.Rio de Janeiro is not giving you your usual dose of escapism. It is
:01:06. > :01:10.absolutely horrible out here, I'm afraid to say. On BBC Four, we have
:01:11. > :01:15.had to move from our usual position down on the ground in the Olympic
:01:16. > :01:19.park, we have got a bill to shelter but I'm not happy to say that it's
:01:20. > :01:23.coming in sideways over here. -- a bit of shelter. You can see the fans
:01:24. > :01:28.down there, being pretty stoic about everything. Lots of umbrellas, and
:01:29. > :01:31.could ghouls aplenty. The fans are still trying to make their way into
:01:32. > :01:36.enjoy the action. We will have plenty of action to brighten up the
:01:37. > :01:39.state of play here and the state of affairs back at home. This is what
:01:40. > :01:46.is coming up this Wednesday afternoon.
:01:47. > :01:55.We are going to be after the Sambodromo very shortly to see the
:01:56. > :02:00.men's individual eliminations. BBC Four is going to be your home fall
:02:01. > :02:06.of the rugby sevens this afternoon. Great Britain with their toughest
:02:07. > :02:10.test so far, taking on New Zealand. And it will be a difficult for Great
:02:11. > :02:17.Britain's women hockey players, up against Olympic silver medallists
:02:18. > :02:22.from 2012, Argentina. This is how the afternoon of day five is looking
:02:23. > :02:26.on this drizzly Rio de Janeiro day. We are going to start with a bit of
:02:27. > :02:31.archery before we go to the water polo, Greece against the greatest
:02:32. > :02:34.men's water polo team in Olympic history, Hungary, and interesting to
:02:35. > :02:37.see how Copacabana is looking, we check in with the Beach volleyball
:02:38. > :02:43.before a bit of rugby sevens and then the women's hockey as well.
:02:44. > :02:50.On BBC One, things don't look much prettier. We have got Emma Pooley
:02:51. > :02:54.for Great Britain going in the women's Road race time trial. She
:02:55. > :03:02.was a Beijing silver medallist, high hopes for her and later, the weather
:03:03. > :03:08.will surely give a little extra bite to Joe Clarke going in the canoe
:03:09. > :03:13.slalom K-1. The breeze is picking up and somehow we are staying in
:03:14. > :03:18.position. My goodness! This is not what we're used to. If anyone was in
:03:19. > :03:22.any doubt whether it was winter in Rio, well, definitely is. We were
:03:23. > :03:27.hoping to show you a full programme of rowing this afternoon.
:03:28. > :03:33.Unfortunately, things have taken a turn for the worse down at the Lagoa
:03:34. > :03:36.Stadium as well. You can just about see Christ the Redeemer, but it has
:03:37. > :03:41.meant we will have no rowing this afternoon. Sir Steve Redgrave and
:03:42. > :03:45.John Inverdale are looking after things down there. What is the state
:03:46. > :03:48.of affairs, guys? It's pretty mournful down here, very
:03:49. > :03:56.great and the only thing that is brightening the horizon... Actually,
:03:57. > :03:59.classic timing! About 50 blokes with bright yellow could ghouls behind a
:04:00. > :04:04.30 seconds ago and they have vanished now. Maybe they have been
:04:05. > :04:08.swept away. Just a mournful sight, grey everywhere. We are not going to
:04:09. > :04:12.have any racing today. Understandably so by the way as well
:04:13. > :04:15.because they must have got a pretty austere weather forecast going
:04:16. > :04:18.forward and you can see what conditions are like at the moment.
:04:19. > :04:22.Occasionally coming you get a massive gust of wind to almost blow
:04:23. > :04:27.you off your feet. I suspect this was a no-brainer. They inspected the
:04:28. > :04:32.course at 7:30am and at 7:31am, they knew what the answer was. Not enough
:04:33. > :04:35.wind for the sailing yesterday when we had perfect conditions but the
:04:36. > :04:42.sailors will be happy today. Look at those pictures. It is pretty obvious
:04:43. > :04:46.why it has been delayed again. We are actually halfway through the
:04:47. > :04:50.rolling programme and we have been delayed twice now, four more days to
:04:51. > :04:55.go, all finals days. It will be interesting to see if we can get
:04:56. > :05:00.through the next few days. Do we assume now that we will be racing on
:05:01. > :05:04.Sunday and just knock the schedule on one day? I don't think they want
:05:05. > :05:08.to do that. We have lost two days now of the first four, but they
:05:09. > :05:14.would like to catch up and have a spare morning on Sunday just as a
:05:15. > :05:18.banker. I gather they are talking about having a double hit on Friday,
:05:19. > :05:21.literally just hearing that in the last few seconds which presumably
:05:22. > :05:25.means they will move today's programme to tomorrow and then
:05:26. > :05:29.tomorrow's programme to Friday and do both sessions. There were two
:05:30. > :05:37.finals today, men's and women's quads, and four finals each day for
:05:38. > :05:42.the last three days. They could be mixing and matching. We will have to
:05:43. > :05:45.wait and see. I've got no idea what the forecast is for the rest of the
:05:46. > :05:51.week because it seems to vacillate every few hours but the bottom line
:05:52. > :05:54.is, nothing is happening here today. The weather really playing havoc
:05:55. > :05:59.with the schedule down at the rowing. Glad to say that we have
:06:00. > :06:03.some action in the archery as well. We will show you a bit about what is
:06:04. > :06:07.going on down at the Sambodromo in a moment but before we do, Darren
:06:08. > :06:11.Campbell picked a fantastic day to get down to the Sambodromo and have
:06:12. > :06:17.a go at a bit of archery as well. It looked very different to how it
:06:18. > :06:20.looks today. After Lord's Cricket ground hosted
:06:21. > :06:27.the archery in 2012, the pressure was on Rio to find a spectacular
:06:28. > :06:30.venue. Step forward, the Sambodromo. During the Rio Carnival, 90,000
:06:31. > :06:37.people fill the stands for half a mile. Having just walked into the
:06:38. > :06:44.arena, the first thing that really strikes you is the heat. It is so,
:06:45. > :06:49.so hot. The target from the shooting line to the target is 70 metres
:06:50. > :06:53.away. As you stand here, you can feel the sun on your back. In this
:06:54. > :06:57.arena, the crowd feels so close. It feels like you can touch them and
:06:58. > :07:01.like you can hear every single breath. You can see Christ the
:07:02. > :07:08.Redeemer, just over there. Is it your time? You will have 20 seconds
:07:09. > :07:13.to release Yobo. Failure to release the bow will result in a penalty. If
:07:14. > :07:17.you just look over there, you can see it is slightly picking up, the
:07:18. > :07:21.sock, you can't wait for it to be still. A red card is what you will
:07:22. > :07:25.receive. It is not like football. You won't be sent off but what you
:07:26. > :07:32.will lose by receiving a red card is your highest score from the set. It
:07:33. > :07:38.will hit its target within one second, at 140 mph. From the
:07:39. > :07:42.shooting line, I could not even see the medal target but now I am this
:07:43. > :07:50.close, it is about the size of a DVD. The best archers will actually
:07:51. > :07:53.hit this little cross. Ridiculous. Now it would be wrong to come to
:07:54. > :07:57.such a fantastic venue without giving it a go myself but I'm going
:07:58. > :08:03.to need a bit of coaching and a bit of help from my main man, Chris.
:08:04. > :08:08.Event organiser, the main guy. You were involved in London 2012 and you
:08:09. > :08:14.are going to be involved in Tokyo. Absolutely. What is this place like?
:08:15. > :08:17.It's amazing, it's never been used for sport before so this is the
:08:18. > :08:21.first time as a sporting venue so some challenges there. It has a
:08:22. > :08:24.fantastic history. It is in the culture. It is in the fire of
:08:25. > :08:28.Brazilians, with Carnival. We are trying to bring the same Carnival
:08:29. > :08:33.ride here, and party hard for the Olympics with the archery. When you
:08:34. > :08:38.draw back the bow, keeping this high, this arm, still, looking
:08:39. > :08:43.straight down, and creating no movement so you can see down the
:08:44. > :08:47.target is hard. It's all about hitting the ten when you can. It is
:08:48. > :08:50.not so much dependent on muscles. It is all about controlling your
:08:51. > :08:54.breathing and your mental ability and being able to hit the ten when
:08:55. > :08:59.you need to for the gold medal. Breathing, forget about strength and
:09:00. > :09:02.power. Clear your mind. The bow is your friend. Don't fight it but use
:09:03. > :09:07.it. Three fingers underneath the arrow and then straighten this arm,
:09:08. > :09:11.good, point to the target, bring this to your right eye, a team in
:09:12. > :09:19.the middle and relax. You got a nine, not bad! Nine!
:09:20. > :09:22.He picked a good day to get out to the Sambodromo, Darren Campbell and
:09:23. > :09:32.it was a pretty good day yesterday for Great Britain's Naomi Folkard,
:09:33. > :09:34.who was involved in last 32 action against Kawanaka of Japan and the
:09:35. > :09:39.Beijing Olympian came through that pretty well, going through to the
:09:40. > :09:43.last visit -- la 16, taking on Santos of Brazil tomorrow at around
:09:44. > :09:46.2:15pm UK time to mark your card for that one. Today, even though the
:09:47. > :09:50.weather is horrible, it does not seem to have affected the action
:09:51. > :09:58.down at the Sambodromo in the men's elimination so let's go down to the
:09:59. > :10:02.Maracana zone and check in on our friend Finicius who seems to be
:10:03. > :10:05.enjoying things down there. We are going to enjoy men's individual
:10:06. > :10:17.action right now at the Sambodromo with our commentator, Glenn Marble.
:10:18. > :10:24.COMMENTATOR: Each archers shoot three arrows per set. It is a
:10:25. > :10:30.knockout format. -- each archer shoots. The maximum score and archer
:10:31. > :10:35.can get in any one set is dirty, if they get three arrows in the ten
:10:36. > :10:39.zone. In the ten zone at the other end of the target, which is 70
:10:40. > :10:49.metres, the other end of the range, 70 metres away, and it is the size
:10:50. > :10:54.of a CD or DVD. Not a big target. Florian Floto starts with nine. If
:10:55. > :11:01.you win a set, you get two set points. The archers can share a set
:11:02. > :11:08.if they have the same score, meaning they get one point each. The losing
:11:09. > :11:11.archer gets no set points. First to sixth set points wins the match
:11:12. > :11:14.moves through to the next round. The loser is eliminated from the
:11:15. > :11:22.competition. We could have a scenario where we have both archers
:11:23. > :11:28.finishing on five set points apiece. And if that happens, we will have a
:11:29. > :11:34.one arrow shoot off. The winner then moves through by being closest to
:11:35. > :11:36.the centre. Similarly pepo, a bit astray with his second arrow,
:11:37. > :11:49.getting a seven. Floto's advantage means that if he
:11:50. > :11:52.gets an eight or better, you will get the first two set points of the
:11:53. > :11:57.match and he's got a ten so a dream finish for Florian Floto. He has got
:11:58. > :12:14.the first two set point locked away. That is the format. Not overly
:12:15. > :12:21.complicate it to follow. It ensures high class and high drama at times.
:12:22. > :12:26.-- complicated to follow. Pressure is able to be applied on their
:12:27. > :12:36.opponent by a judge, so it can be an exciting format. -- by each archer.
:12:37. > :12:40.The archers are just waiting for the judges at the far end of the range
:12:41. > :13:05.to ratify their scores. Then we will move onto set two.
:13:06. > :13:09.So, those scores have been ratified now and Floto takes the first set
:13:10. > :13:35.29-24. -- Piipo of Finland. The archer has
:13:36. > :13:40.20 seconds to shoot each arrow. Completed at both of the European
:13:41. > :13:43.Championships earlier this year, these archers, Floto finishing just
:13:44. > :13:51.outside the top 16, so making the last 32. It is his third ten, three
:13:52. > :13:59.in a row, for him. He's in good form in match and Piipo finished one
:14:00. > :14:07.further back. Floto is the man in good form, here. He has made an
:14:08. > :14:08.excellent start. He is gunning for his fourth ten in succession in this
:14:09. > :14:47.match. Not far-away, is he? The archers are allowed to speak to
:14:48. > :14:51.their coaches. During a match. Great finish from Floto. That is pressure
:14:52. > :14:57.archery right there. Very impressive start from Florian Floto. He was in
:14:58. > :15:04.very good touch during the ranking round, and had a very high finish,
:15:05. > :15:09.11th out of 64. So far, four tens and two nines for the German. He has
:15:10. > :15:49.two sets locked away. The difference has been stark so
:15:50. > :15:54.far, two very good set of archery from Florian Floto, he is one set
:15:55. > :16:11.away and he is through to the last 32. The pressure on the Finnish arch
:16:12. > :16:16.and now. If he loses this, he is gone. He needs arose in the yellow
:16:17. > :16:28.zone desperately. If Florian Floto continues this sort of form,... A
:16:29. > :16:53.big, strong, stable base for him to launch into his archery.
:16:54. > :17:04.That has clipped the ten. If it hits the line, it defaults to the higher
:17:05. > :17:08.score. That will be scored a ten. Florian Floto continues his
:17:09. > :17:16.outstanding form. This is a big opportunity for the German team --
:17:17. > :17:26.to wrap up the match. He just needs a six or better. Another one in the
:17:27. > :17:34.nine zone, nine out of nine in the Get Low, a very good effort. That
:17:35. > :17:39.second arrow needed some ratification. It will not matter,
:17:40. > :17:45.Florian Floto has made light work of his first match, really impressive.
:17:46. > :18:00.He will move through to the round of 32.
:18:01. > :18:09.Nine arrows required to move through to the next round, that is the
:18:10. > :18:15.minimum number. Five of them finished in the ten zone, four in
:18:16. > :18:18.benign, an excellent effort. He just dropped four points in the whole
:18:19. > :18:38.match, he is comfortable you through.
:18:39. > :18:50.The men's individual archery. These two looking to get into the round of
:18:51. > :19:16.32. Andres Pila, the Colombian. 654
:19:17. > :19:25.points, just one of his personal best. 82nd in the world rankings, he
:19:26. > :19:37.has been as high as 54, in 2013. His opponent is Khairul Anuar Mohamad.
:19:38. > :19:41.He qualified in 20 Second Place. 33 -- he is 41st in the world rankings,
:19:42. > :19:55.but he has been as high as number three come back in 2013.
:19:56. > :20:00.Khairul Anuar Mohamad's world ranking in 2013 was largely on the
:20:01. > :20:11.back of making the quarterfinals in the last Olympic Games. And
:20:12. > :20:17.excellent form. He just missed out on the quarterfinals in 2013 in the
:20:18. > :20:22.World Championships. He just missed the medals in the Asian games in
:20:23. > :20:27.2014. He has been a very good archer in certain competitions over the
:20:28. > :20:34.last three or four years. Without just breaking through to get a top
:20:35. > :20:42.three placing. But he has been very competitive. He is one to watch in
:20:43. > :21:10.this Olympic Games, his second. He has also been in action already
:21:11. > :21:22.in the team competition. Malaysia missing out on the quarterfinals.
:21:23. > :21:32.284 Andres Pila. And likewise, Khairul Anuar Mohamad with nine and
:21:33. > :21:33.seven. Not far away, but he asks Andres Pila to get a ten to win the
:21:34. > :21:53.set. Andres Pila has an opportunity. Not been able to get one into the
:21:54. > :22:02.yellow zone yet. It will be a set to Khairul Anuar Mohamad, by a point.
:22:03. > :22:11.A very well-respected fierce competitor. He has been on the
:22:12. > :22:13.circuit for several years now. The first Malaysia mail to reach a World
:22:14. > :22:34.Cup final, in 2011. Andres Pila is not a bad archer. He
:22:35. > :22:36.is well respected around South America as being one of the best on
:22:37. > :23:02.the continent. His radar is not working at the
:23:03. > :23:31.moment. The wind is a lot lower than has
:23:32. > :23:54.been in previous sessions. A nice buffer. He should be wrapping
:23:55. > :23:59.up this set, courtesy of a couple of loose arrows from Andres Pila. That
:24:00. > :24:04.is his best so far, but it is unlikely to be enough. The Malaysian
:24:05. > :24:13.needing just a six or better to move into a comfortable position. He has
:24:14. > :24:20.got and eight, not his best by any stretch, but still good enough. You
:24:21. > :24:28.just have to get more points than your opponent in this format. He had
:24:29. > :24:40.wriggle room there, Khairul Anuar Mohamad, to secure another set.
:24:41. > :25:02.It is all about surviving to the next round. You don't need 30s each
:25:03. > :25:06.time, you just have to get more points than your opponent. That is
:25:07. > :25:14.what Khairul Anuar Mohamad has done so far.
:25:15. > :25:19.Khairul Anuar Mohamad needing one more set when, two more set points,
:25:20. > :25:31.to move through to the next round, the round of 32. Andres Pila needs
:25:32. > :25:33.to at least share this set. He has started brilliantly, with a ten, the
:25:34. > :25:50.first of the match so far. That could be a nine. It might have
:25:51. > :25:52.clipped the line by a smidgen. Andres Pila waits for the wind to
:25:53. > :26:00.die down. All of a sudden, the gust is coming
:26:01. > :26:17.through the range. An excellent response from Khairul
:26:18. > :26:39.Anuar Mohamad. They have 20 seconds' time-limit for
:26:40. > :26:47.each arrow. Andres Pila waiting almost the full 20 seconds. Really
:26:48. > :26:51.breezy all of a sudden, in this last minute or so, that is why Khairul
:26:52. > :27:01.Anuar Mohamad is waiting as well. He needs an eight or better to end this
:27:02. > :27:05.match. That was a clutch arrow, the wind lying below, the time ticking
:27:06. > :27:12.down, at Khairul Anuar Mohamad puts it in the ten zone. That would
:27:13. > :27:15.please him. The Asterix is the provisional arrow, but it does not
:27:16. > :27:24.matter, he has a comfortable set victory. Khairul Anuar Mohamad left
:27:25. > :27:55.his best archery to the last set. He will go through to the next round.
:27:56. > :28:03.Very good form from Khairul Anuar Mohamad. Hugely impressive, the
:28:04. > :28:09.gusty conditions coming up, seemingly from nowhere. That
:28:10. > :28:18.indicates the breeze is picking up a bit here.
:28:19. > :28:21.Khairul Anuar Mohamad has moved through to the last 32, defeating
:28:22. > :28:33.Andres Pila. We will be back with the archery in
:28:34. > :28:37.a moment. Just to bring you an update, it is still pretty awful
:28:38. > :28:43.down here. That is the state of play looking down over the coast. It does
:28:44. > :28:49.not catch much better when you change the camera angle. It is windy
:28:50. > :28:52.as well, really blustery. When we came on air, I said how the rain was
:28:53. > :28:58.coming down. We have taken shelter here, but it is cold as well.
:28:59. > :29:05.Sometimes when you go on holiday and you feel it is tropical, it is quite
:29:06. > :29:09.warm, but at the moment I feel like I need more layers, maybe even a
:29:10. > :29:17.thermal. The fans are still coming in. Next to the handball arena, that
:29:18. > :29:24.seems pretty popular, a lot of fans wearing their cagoule is and the
:29:25. > :29:30.umbrellas are definitely up. We are going to go back to the archery in a
:29:31. > :29:35.moment, but on BBC One now, they are in the women's Road race time trial.
:29:36. > :29:41.Emma Pooley, the Beijing Olympian and silver medallist, going for
:29:42. > :29:45.Great Britain, she is in the closing stages of her race. She is pushing
:29:46. > :29:51.for a medal, but with more riders still to come, we will have to see
:29:52. > :29:58.whether she can come away with a medal. But now, we will go back to
:29:59. > :30:02.the Sambodromo. The wind and weather definitely affecting some of the
:30:03. > :30:15.archers. They will join the women's individual competition.
:30:16. > :30:21.COMMENTATOR: Women's individual archery time in the round of 64 here
:30:22. > :30:25.at the Rio 2016 games and we have a match between Shih-Chia Lin of
:30:26. > :30:39.Taipei and Reem Mansour of Egypt. A very good archer from Chinese
:30:40. > :30:44.Taipei, the 23-year-old, qualified ninth with a score of 650, 21 in the
:30:45. > :30:47.ten zone, world ranking is ten at the moment and she has been at
:30:48. > :30:56.high-end -- size five in the world back in September 20 15. Here is
:30:57. > :31:03.Reem Mansour of Egypt, the 22-year-old, qualified 56th, 596
:31:04. > :31:06.points, 12 of her arrows finished in the ten zone, currently ranked 179
:31:07. > :31:19.in the world. Beaten finalist at the African
:31:20. > :31:21.Championships in 2016. Our line judge from the match -- for the
:31:22. > :31:46.matches from the US. So, women's archery and we now have
:31:47. > :31:55.Shih-Chia Lin on the shooting range and she is certainly an archer to
:31:56. > :31:57.watch in these Olympic Games, she finished second at the World
:31:58. > :32:04.Championships last year, beaten in the final. She starts with a nine.
:32:05. > :32:26.Likewise, Mansour. Keep your eyes on Lin. She is
:32:27. > :32:38.certainly going to be one to watch. Mansour with an eight. Lin can win
:32:39. > :32:42.this match is a nine -- with a nine or better which she has secured.
:32:43. > :32:47.Shih-Chia Lin off to a good start, here.
:32:48. > :32:57.And that I think has missed the target from Mansour. Unfortunately
:32:58. > :33:07.for her, she got that one terribly wrong. It thundered into the board
:33:08. > :33:11.at the back. So it is going to be 28-9, and in fact, there it is,
:33:12. > :33:28.right there. Missing the target entirely.
:33:29. > :33:39.Shih-Chia Lin, part of the Chinese Taipei team that competed well
:33:40. > :33:45.earlier on in this Olympic Games. They secured the bronze medal in the
:33:46. > :33:55.team event, beating Italy in that bronze medal match. Great effort
:33:56. > :33:59.from her and her team-mates, one of whom will also be a serious
:34:00. > :34:10.contender in the women's draw. So Shih-Chia Lin, up 28-17, 2-0 set
:34:11. > :34:14.points. If you are watching archery for the first time, just repeating
:34:15. > :34:20.and reminding you of how the format works, a best of five set encounter,
:34:21. > :34:27.each archer shoots three arrows per set, and the highest cumulative
:34:28. > :34:33.score wins two set point. As we saw Lin do in the previous match, or the
:34:34. > :34:41.previous set, the first to sixth set points wins the match. -- six set
:34:42. > :34:51.points. That won't worry Lin too much. Mansour finishing with a total
:34:52. > :35:00.of 21 which means Lin only needs four or more to win the second set.
:35:01. > :35:09.And she has got and eight. 26-21, comfortable set when for Chicchi 11
:35:10. > :35:21.as well, so she just needs six points, one more set win to move to
:35:22. > :35:25.the last 32. You can get five set points apiece and if we do reach
:35:26. > :35:30.that, we then go to a one arrow shoot off, with the archer who
:35:31. > :35:32.finishes closest to the centre winning their way through to the
:35:33. > :35:50.next round. Excellent indication, there are, on
:35:51. > :35:57.the flight of the arrow, and the wind just dying down a bit again.
:35:58. > :36:03.Not affecting the flight of the arrow to much on that one from Lin
:36:04. > :36:08.so she is up 4-0 in set points now. The wind is still gusting around a
:36:09. > :36:14.little bit. Tricky conditions for the archery, for both the team and
:36:15. > :36:20.individual competitions so far. You see Lin, there, just struggling to
:36:21. > :36:29.provide herself with a stable base, a balance, where she can draw the
:36:30. > :36:33.arrow back. Not be affected by anything else. Just below the ten
:36:34. > :37:03.zone from Lin. Well, it is a tough day at the
:37:04. > :37:08.office for Reem Mansour, just four, there. Lin just needs two, to move
:37:09. > :37:23.through to the next round. She has got a nine so a comfortable
:37:24. > :37:25.win, then, for Shih-Chia Lin. She has had absolutely no problems
:37:26. > :37:29.whatsoever, moving through to the round of 32 comfortably, taking that
:37:30. > :38:15.match against Reem Mansour of Egypt. So, no problems at all for Shih-Chia
:38:16. > :38:19.Lin. She is one of the world's elite women's archers. She's ranked inside
:38:20. > :38:22.the top ten and has had no problems moving through to the next round,
:38:23. > :38:32.comfortably beating Reem Mansour 6-0 in set point.
:38:33. > :38:38.Women's archery continues here at the 2016 Olympic Games and we have a
:38:39. > :38:43.round of 64 elimination match now, and this match has Laurence Baldauff
:38:44. > :38:52.of Austria up against Bombayla Devi Laishram of India. Bombayla Devi
:38:53. > :39:00.Laishram in her third Olympic Games let's look at Lord's love, the
:39:01. > :39:05.41-year-old, living in Luxembourg and residing in Vienna, qualifying
:39:06. > :39:15.first with 16 pence in her ranking round, current ranking in the world
:39:16. > :39:22.of 93rd. -- 16 tens. Laishram in her third Olympic Games, qualifying 24th
:39:23. > :39:27.with a score of 638, 23 arrows in the ten zone, they shoot 72 in total
:39:28. > :39:31.in the ranking round, 69 in a world at the moment, the 31-year-old but
:39:32. > :39:35.she has been a size 14, back in November 2000 eight. -- as high as
:39:36. > :39:56.14. Our judge is from Argentina. So, Laishram, here, 24th in the
:39:57. > :40:01.ranking round, as Olympic experience, her third Olympic Games,
:40:02. > :40:04.competing in the team and individual competitions at the last two games,
:40:05. > :40:10.best effort in London four years ago where she just missed out on a spot
:40:11. > :40:14.in the top 16, so that means she won her around 60 format but lost in the
:40:15. > :40:18.round of 32. If she was able to win here, she would match what she was
:40:19. > :40:20.able to achieve in London at the very least. Of course, she will be
:40:21. > :40:33.aiming to go better than that. Baldauff has competed at the World
:40:34. > :40:42.Championships last year in Denmark. She also reached the last 32, there.
:40:43. > :40:50.So Baldauff, that is her best achievement in her career to date so
:40:51. > :41:05.far. Of course, reaching the last 32 got her into the field here for Rio.
:41:06. > :41:09.Laishram's eight means there's a big opportunity for Baldauff to win the
:41:10. > :41:18.first set. She needs seven or better. And she got a nine. Good
:41:19. > :41:30.start for the Austrian. She takes the first set. A score of 27, three
:41:31. > :41:34.nines so plenty for Laishram to think about heading into the second
:41:35. > :41:40.set. Baldauff did not compete in the sport ten years, took a break
:41:41. > :41:44.between 2000-2010. But she has since got her an easier than back and six
:41:45. > :41:50.years later, here she is at the Olympics, a fine Olympics from her,
:41:51. > :41:52.despite not competing in the sport ten years. -- she has since got her
:41:53. > :42:05.enthusiasm back. So, there we are, Laurence Baldauff,
:42:06. > :42:30.the winner of the first set, 27-24. Laishram, here, a two time Olympian,
:42:31. > :42:37.two time World Championship attendee as well. She gets her first ten. Her
:42:38. > :42:44.best result was a silver medal at the World Championships in 2011 in
:42:45. > :42:50.the team event. As an individual, her best effort is arguably third
:42:51. > :43:00.place, a bronze medal at the 20 13th Asian championships in Chinese
:43:01. > :43:09.Taipei. -- 2013. Laishram has a pretty good record, too, in World
:43:10. > :43:17.Cups, with numerous appearances in that, like this archer from Austria,
:43:18. > :43:22.Laurence Baldauff. So, Baldauff courtesy of that good start to the
:43:23. > :43:29.second, might claim it with a nine or better, and she has got the nine.
:43:30. > :43:33.Excellent from her. Good comeback. 24 points scored in the first set
:43:34. > :43:46.and a significant improvement in the second from Laishram.
:43:47. > :43:58.Likely to be seven, that one, if it lands on the line. Remember, it
:43:59. > :44:04.defaults to higher number. -- the higher number. The national coach of
:44:05. > :44:09.Austria, there. Giving Baldauff some wise words. It is a six star at the
:44:10. > :44:12.moment, likely to be seven, that means the judges at the target end
:44:13. > :44:15.of the range will have a look and see whether the arrow at the top of
:44:16. > :44:26.your screen is clipped the black line. The target itself is 122
:44:27. > :44:30.centimetres in diameter. The archers shoot from 70 metres and believe me,
:44:31. > :44:36.it is a very small target when you are standing on the 70 metre line.
:44:37. > :44:41.It is a long way away, that target, when you are standing on the
:44:42. > :44:48.shooting line. Each zone, a scoring ring, as they call it, 6.1
:44:49. > :44:54.centimetres in diameter. It makes the centre of the target, the ten
:44:55. > :44:59.zone, about the size of a DVD. So that is how small the target is in
:45:00. > :45:07.the centre. Laishram has the second set, 28-24. Baldauff's arrow was
:45:08. > :45:10.upgraded to a seven but it did not change the result of the set so we
:45:11. > :45:27.are locked up after two sets. Laurence Baldauff does not have one
:45:28. > :45:32.in ten zone yet. Four nines. Bombayla Devi Laishram has one in
:45:33. > :45:39.the ten zone. That is the next nearest she has had so far.
:45:40. > :45:46.This looks comfortable for the Indian. She can wrap this up
:45:47. > :45:54.comfortably, leading to get to 25 to win the set, so seven or better for
:45:55. > :45:58.the win. Much more consistent in this match so far, just one bad
:45:59. > :46:08.arrow so far, a seven in the first set. Since then she has been very
:46:09. > :46:10.solid. Bombayla Devi Laishram's last six arrows, they have all been in
:46:11. > :46:39.the yellow zone. Bombayla Devi Laishram has been an
:46:40. > :46:46.archer for 20 years. Gold medal winner from the 2012 -- 2010
:46:47. > :46:51.Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Followed her mother into the sport,
:46:52. > :46:54.who was her inspiration. She has been competing on the international
:46:55. > :47:12.stage for nine years. She is starting to move into her
:47:13. > :47:18.form nicely, with a solid set. A good start for Laurence Baldauff.
:47:19. > :47:29.That is her best arrow so far. The first ten of the match.
:47:30. > :47:37.Whoever wins will move through to the next round. Laurence Baldauff is
:47:38. > :47:49.determined to ensure that she stays in the match. A mixed bag from those
:47:50. > :47:56.first two arrows. What happens with a six like that is that it
:47:57. > :48:01.eliminates the effectiveness of the previous arrow, which was a ten. She
:48:02. > :48:04.now has the pressure of binding one in there again. The Indian can wrap
:48:05. > :48:20.it up with a seven. She has got and eight, that will do
:48:21. > :48:21.it. Bombayla Devi Laishram of India is going to be through to the next
:48:22. > :48:42.round. Solid archery from her. She needed
:48:43. > :48:48.12 arrows in all. Nine of them were in the Gold zone. Just the 110, but
:48:49. > :48:52.she will be happy that she is into the next round. She has a chance of
:48:53. > :49:20.Rory in her third Olympic Games. The form here of Bombayla Devi
:49:21. > :49:28.Laishram much more consistent than her Austrian opponent. The Indian
:49:29. > :49:29.moves through to the round of 32. Defeating Laurence Baldauff of
:49:30. > :49:41.Austria. Progression into the next round for
:49:42. > :49:46.the Indian. We will be back with the next stage of the men's individual
:49:47. > :49:54.competition on BBC Four in a moment. Back here, as the wind comes across
:49:55. > :50:00.me in our sheltered position, we have been joined by Ollie Williams.
:50:01. > :50:04.Not for the first time this week, you are showing you are a lot
:50:05. > :50:09.stronger when it comes to the environment, and I am weak. I did
:50:10. > :50:18.not get the memo again that said we were supposed to look old, sorry! --
:50:19. > :50:23.cold! You live in the northern territories, in Canada. Away from
:50:24. > :50:27.the archery, we will talk about table tennis, it is a big day in the
:50:28. > :50:35.women's singles. China looking to add more gold to their trophy
:50:36. > :50:45.cabinet. Yes, they get under way, we have the London 2012 champion Li
:50:46. > :50:49.Xiaoxia, playing Ai Fukuhara. Li Xiaoxia has not been perfect since
:50:50. > :50:55.London, she is only third in the world. She had a bout of pneumonia
:50:56. > :51:00.before that. Ai Fukuhara is who I want to talk about, the Japanese
:51:01. > :51:08.rival, because she is a big deal in Japan, Japan makes a big deal out of
:51:09. > :51:11.their sports stars in sports that we don't focus on. She was everywhere
:51:12. > :51:18.when she was 12, she would play studio guests and cry when she lost.
:51:19. > :51:27.You might have views about that as a parent, but that is what she did.
:51:28. > :51:30.She had a video game. You could play 12-year-old Ai Fukuhara as she takes
:51:31. > :51:34.on a series of challenges involving an old salarymen who is refusing to
:51:35. > :51:41.give up the game, and a Demon player. Where do you get these
:51:42. > :51:44.nuggets from? She will have a difficult time in the first
:51:45. > :51:49.semifinal, you can see it on BBC One. They will show that this
:51:50. > :51:59.afternoon. In the second semifinal, it will feature the Olympic silver
:52:00. > :52:03.medallist from 2012. That is Ding Ning, she lost to Li Xiaoxia, and it
:52:04. > :52:09.got a bit Banksy, because Ai Fukuhara felt the Italian umpire was
:52:10. > :52:13.biased against her. She kept getting penalties against her from the
:52:14. > :52:18.umpire. One of which was for taking her towel to early. She started to
:52:19. > :52:23.think it was cutting it a bit too fine. She was unimpressed that she
:52:24. > :52:29.lost, she blamed it in part on her spat with the umpire. They could be
:52:30. > :52:33.the possibility we have an all China final. She is playing a North
:52:34. > :52:36.Korean, who is not well-known, ranked 50th in the world, but she
:52:37. > :52:42.has scrapped her way through to get here. It will be interesting to
:52:43. > :52:47.watch that. We could have a China rematch of the London 2012 final.
:52:48. > :52:53.They have dominated the table tennis, 15 of the 16 available gold
:52:54. > :53:02.medals this century. China dominating medals across the board.
:53:03. > :53:10.Great Britain lagging a bit further back. It is not just table tennis
:53:11. > :53:15.that they dominate. It is always China against the US in the medal
:53:16. > :53:19.table, they have already picked up three gold medals each in
:53:20. > :53:26.weightlifting and diving. Diving is one of the sportswear China hoped to
:53:27. > :53:32.win everything. Table tennis is one. Since 2000, China have won 75% of
:53:33. > :53:38.all gold medals on offer in diving. But they have not completed a clean
:53:39. > :53:42.sweep of the medals. That is something they will look to do here.
:53:43. > :53:47.They have three from three so far. Badminton as well. They win just
:53:48. > :53:52.about everything. Then, table tennis. 24 out of 28 Olympic table
:53:53. > :53:58.tennis titles in history have gone to China. Even some of the nations
:53:59. > :54:03.who win table tennis medals who are not China have China born athlete.
:54:04. > :54:08.The Singapore women's team from 2012 were all worn in China. They know
:54:09. > :54:14.what they are doing, they stick with the sports they are very good at.
:54:15. > :54:18.Information packs, another wonderful time chatting to you. Last night in
:54:19. > :54:24.the swimming pool you may have seen that Michael Phelps did it again.
:54:25. > :54:29.Yet another gold medal. Michael Johnson has been debating just who
:54:30. > :54:36.is the greatest Olympian of all time.
:54:37. > :54:40.I want everybody to know it, I am the greatest. There are those who
:54:41. > :54:50.tell you straight. You cannot argue with that. For the rest of us, we
:54:51. > :54:54.need to define ourselves. It combines physical strength and
:54:55. > :55:00.beauty. We are constantly measuring, comparing, contrasting. A champion
:55:01. > :55:06.needs determination, able to win, a killer instinct. That is the beauty
:55:07. > :55:14.of sport. Every age produces its heroes. Who is the greatest? Usain
:55:15. > :55:22.Bolt has blown them away. History is being made, Carl Lewis. The pretty
:55:23. > :55:29.gold medal. One man stands out. He has made the 15th Olympic Games his
:55:30. > :55:35.own. Through the record books, do they tell the true story? The
:55:36. > :55:40.champion becomes a legend. A new Olympic and world record. Mark Spitz
:55:41. > :55:50.won the gold medal every time he swam. Do the numbers add up? Michael
:55:51. > :55:54.Phelps' 21st Olympic medal. If anybody sees me go near a boat, you
:55:55. > :55:59.have my permission to shoot me. Great Britain get the gold medal.
:56:00. > :56:06.Steve Redgrave, what a great Olympian. Is it about what touches
:56:07. > :56:19.us? Faultless. That is Olympic history. The emotion? A gold medal
:56:20. > :56:27.for Freeman. A moment captured in time?
:56:28. > :56:39.The debate goes on and on and on. That is the beauty of sport. If we
:56:40. > :56:49.have all the answers, that would be no fun at all.
:56:50. > :56:52.The debate continues. You can have your own composition, who is the
:56:53. > :56:58.greatest Olympian of all time? Michael Phelps has the most gold
:56:59. > :57:06.medals. But get involved with the hashtag. No doubt this will run and
:57:07. > :57:12.run for the rest of Olympic history. We will go back to the archery, the
:57:13. > :57:23.men's individual competition continues. We will see the German
:57:24. > :57:37.against the Malaysian. The men's archery continues. A round of 32
:57:38. > :57:42.match. The winner of this will be through to the last 16.
:57:43. > :57:47.High stakes now, you can get to the last 16, you can move into the
:57:48. > :58:19.quarterfinals. All of his arrows into the yellow
:58:20. > :58:27.zone in his previous match. The 24-year-old defeated the Colombian
:58:28. > :58:31.in the first round, 6-0. He is 41st in the world, but he has been as
:58:32. > :58:45.high as number three, and he is competing in his second Olympics.
:58:46. > :58:49.The line judge is from Egypt, --. Khairul Anuar Mohamad has the
:58:50. > :58:57.experience of London 2012 under his belt. He has been a quarterfinalist
:58:58. > :59:04.at the Asian games and the Asian championships in 2015 and in the
:59:05. > :59:07.World Cup final in 2013. Plenty of experience, finishing in and around
:59:08. > :59:12.the top eight, Khairul Anuar Mohamad. Several years on the
:59:13. > :59:33.circuit. Florian Floto shop very well in the
:59:34. > :59:38.first match earlier in the session. A very good performance from him. If
:59:39. > :59:43.he can carry that on, he will be hard to beat. Khairul Anuar Mohamad
:59:44. > :59:48.has real ability. He has the ability to lift his form when required. That
:59:49. > :00:04.is what he has done here to start this match.
:00:05. > :00:21.So, this one is beautifully poised. The set is going to be decided on
:00:22. > :00:41.the last arrow. From both archers. Well, that is not what Floto wanted
:00:42. > :00:48.and it gives Mohamad a big opportunity to win this set. This
:00:49. > :00:53.arrow needs to go into the gold zone but you can see the wind and look at
:00:54. > :01:01.his bow wavering. Three seconds on the shot clock. Can he get it away
:01:02. > :01:08.in time? He just did, Mohamad's nine will get the job done.
:01:09. > :01:18.Mohamad really doing well to steady his bow right at the end, there. Did
:01:19. > :01:24.very well to bang that one into the golden zone and win the set. Tight,
:01:25. > :01:30.tight moment therefore the Malaysians. -- there are, for the
:01:31. > :01:38.Malaysian, as the wind just gusted up a bit. Terrific arrow to start
:01:39. > :01:40.and then built a solid foundation for the Malaysian to go on and win
:01:41. > :02:00.the set. By one point. 27-26 if the confirmed score in the
:02:01. > :02:37.first set with Mohamad taking it. Floto waiting for the wind to die
:02:38. > :02:40.down again. Started off OK in this session but it has picked up a
:02:41. > :02:44.little bit and now dropped off again. Floto, oh, he got that one
:02:45. > :03:03.terribly wrong, didn't he? Mohamad's bow is just... Swaying
:03:04. > :03:06.from side to side, there. Tough, challenging conditions again
:03:07. > :03:22.greeting the archers in this session. So, Floto now will be in a
:03:23. > :03:25.challenging position here is the Malaysian can put one in the yellow
:03:26. > :03:30.and he has done so with a maximum score.
:03:31. > :03:39.So, the Malaysian with a very big lead in the second set.
:03:40. > :03:49.Looking very solid to win this one too, Mohamad. He only need five or
:03:50. > :03:56.higher. -- needs. And he has done that comfortably.
:03:57. > :04:05.That is the issue, isn't it? What the best archers do, all the archers
:04:06. > :04:09.in Rio are capable of shooting tens but the key to success is following
:04:10. > :04:16.it up with another ten or another nine. It is just solid, consistent
:04:17. > :04:22.archery, ten, and then a seven or eight is just going to open the door
:04:23. > :04:24.for your opponent. Floto's six, there, basically, in the end, was
:04:25. > :04:40.going to count him out of the set. Good shot, there, of what is
:04:41. > :04:45.required to get the arrow into the ten zone is Mohamad did for the
:04:46. > :04:57.second time in a match. 27-23 this time, he now leads 4-0 in set
:04:58. > :04:58.points. So, Floto needs a score in this set, to either share or win it
:04:59. > :05:27.to prolong this match. That is a good start for the German.
:05:28. > :05:31.The round of 32 at stake in the archery and Mohamad has to reset.
:05:32. > :05:40.That will soak up the time. The shot clock is down to five already. What
:05:41. > :05:43.a recovery. The archers train for situations like that. They know
:05:44. > :05:48.exactly what they have to do when they have to reset and that was very
:05:49. > :05:54.impressive from Mohamad, despite the score clock and the time pressure
:05:55. > :05:59.that he was under. This is what we saw from Floto in his first-round
:06:00. > :06:04.match, arrow after arrow in the Gold zone.
:06:05. > :06:13.And now Mohamad is starting to heat up. He might need to, another ten,
:06:14. > :06:19.yes. Let's see what Floto can do, here.
:06:20. > :06:26.Oh, he liked it from the moment it left the boat. And Mohamad will need
:06:27. > :06:39.another ten to win the set and win the match. He has got an eight.
:06:40. > :06:44.Well, Floto needed almost perfection there, to survive in this match,
:06:45. > :06:52.just a smidgen away from getting 30 out of 30. How critical might that
:06:53. > :07:10.last arrow be for the German in that set, in the context of the match?
:07:11. > :07:18.Terrific archery from Florian Floto, a significant lift in that last set
:07:19. > :07:26.from his previous two, a nine and two tends. And he needed them
:07:27. > :07:31.because Mohamad got to tens with his first two arrows that was a high
:07:32. > :07:39.scoring one, 20 9-27 and Floto stays alive in the match, now trailing 4-2
:07:40. > :07:44.in set points. But Mohamad is still in control of this one. The scenario
:07:45. > :07:53.for Floto is the same as the last. He needs a point or a win in this
:07:54. > :08:01.set to keep alive his dream of moving through to the last 16. The
:08:02. > :08:05.clicker comes in and away goes the arrow and varies the result when you
:08:06. > :08:27.get it right. That is his third successive ten.
:08:28. > :08:44.Welcomer his streak is broken. -- well, his streak is broken.
:08:45. > :08:52.He did that in the last set, too, Mohamad, just leaked one to the
:08:53. > :08:58.right and it ended up costing him. So now, Floto can end the set, here.
:08:59. > :09:01.With an eight or better, and he has got a nine. We are going to a fifth
:09:02. > :09:09.set, this is impressive from the German. He has come back from 4-0
:09:10. > :09:19.down in set points and now he is locking up the match.
:09:20. > :10:02.Well, now we have a match on our hands.
:10:03. > :10:09.Some great replays from the various cameras we have around the range,
:10:10. > :10:12.really gives you an excellent indication of what the body goes
:10:13. > :10:23.through, the strain, drawing back the arrow. Most of them are in the
:10:24. > :10:31.15-20 kg target. Some of them are slightly harder. Floto now locked up
:10:32. > :10:37.at 4-4 in set points heading into the final set. This is a one set
:10:38. > :10:44.match, whoever wins it moves through to the last 16. If it is shared, we
:10:45. > :10:51.go to a one arrow shoot off and what a start from Floto, who has really
:10:52. > :11:02.found his form. In these last two sets, nothing outside the Gold zone
:11:03. > :11:04.since the second set, for this man. Another ten, his fifth in the match.
:11:05. > :11:25.Mohamad has four. Mohamad stares that one down
:11:26. > :11:40.superbly. Floto can end this match with a ten. He's got it! How is that
:11:41. > :11:43.for pressure archery? A brilliant performance from Floto and his coach
:11:44. > :11:50.is delighted and the Malaysian had this match at 4-0 in set points and
:11:51. > :11:56.has been eliminated. This does not matter. Won't have any context in a
:11:57. > :12:02.match at all even though it is a maximum. High-quality archery from
:12:03. > :12:11.both archers at the end of the match but that Floto performance was
:12:12. > :12:14.superb. Three tens from three in the last set and that is what he needed
:12:15. > :12:20.to get through to the last 16, he needed perfection and he achieved
:12:21. > :12:25.it, put a big tick next to it. Well done to Florian Floto, who has come
:12:26. > :12:28.back from a 4-0 deficit to go through and win three consecutive
:12:29. > :12:35.sets, knocking out Mohamad, you, who is by no means the worst archer in
:12:36. > :12:46.the field, far from it. The former world number three.
:12:47. > :12:57.Khairul Anuar Mohamad goes out of the tournament. And the German goes
:12:58. > :13:04.through to the last 16 with a fine performance. His best performance at
:13:05. > :13:07.major championships, Florian Floto, who is the winner of this match 6-4
:13:08. > :13:20.in set points. A spot in the last 16 awaits the
:13:21. > :13:26.winner of the next match in the women's individual round of 32 clash
:13:27. > :13:35.between Shih-Chia Lin of Chinese Taipei and Bombayla Devi Laishram of
:13:36. > :13:37.India. Lin here, the beaten finalist at the World Championships last
:13:38. > :13:44.year, made it all the way to the final, a wonderful performance from
:13:45. > :13:47.her. She had a most comfortable win in her first-round match in the
:13:48. > :13:55.individual competition, eliminating Reem Mansour of Egypt 6-0, not too
:13:56. > :13:56.troubled in that match, Shih-Chia Lin, did not need to produce her
:13:57. > :14:07.best form in that one. Bombayla Devi Laishram dropped a set
:14:08. > :14:12.against Laurence Baldauff of Austria but recovered to win and move
:14:13. > :14:13.through to this clash. She is competing in her third Olympic
:14:14. > :14:27.Games, Laishram. And here is the line judge for this
:14:28. > :14:43.match from Singapore. Now, India against Chinese Taipei
:14:44. > :14:47.for a spot in the last 16th here. These to know each other well. They
:14:48. > :14:54.have competed against each other on the circuit for a little while now,
:14:55. > :14:59.these two. Laishram is a bronze medallist at the Asian championships
:15:00. > :15:08.from 2013 but Lin, as I mentioned, is the defeated world champion --
:15:09. > :15:11.World Championship finalist from 2015 in Copenhagen, made it all the
:15:12. > :15:20.way to the final and she starts with an eight.
:15:21. > :15:24.She starts with a superb arrow. Some of her compatriots in the stands,
:15:25. > :15:32.supporting her. Bombayla Devi Laishram with a big
:15:33. > :16:06.advantage in the first set. That is her best one. But Bombayla
:16:07. > :16:11.Devi Laishram needs just a seven to win the first set. She has achieved
:16:12. > :16:46.it. With some comfort. No panic yet or cause for concern.
:16:47. > :16:51.It is all about composure and discipline. Repetition on the
:16:52. > :17:04.shooting line. Superb start from Bombayla Devi
:17:05. > :17:10.Laishram, that set the standard and put her in a solid position to close
:17:11. > :17:37.the set out. She was able to achieve it successfully.
:17:38. > :17:48.That is called and eight start. They will have to wait until after the
:17:49. > :17:52.set to ratify it. At the moment, it is and eight. It could be a nine. We
:17:53. > :18:08.will have to wait and see. Shih-Chia Lin will be concerned, and
:18:09. > :18:10.her coach. She has only been able to get one arrow so far into the gold
:18:11. > :18:22.zone. The coach of the Indian women's team
:18:23. > :18:28.there. Shih-Chia Lin battling, she might be on 25, so to make it
:18:29. > :18:34.absolutely secure, Bombayla Devi Laishram gets a nine here,... She
:18:35. > :18:40.has a ten. It does not matter, the first arrow from Shih-Chia Lin.
:18:41. > :18:42.Bombayla Devi Laishram again puts in a ten when she must, and it needed
:18:43. > :18:51.to count. And extreme pressure now, Shih-Chia
:18:52. > :19:08.Lin. She qualified in ninth place in the
:19:09. > :19:12.ranking. Unless she can get arrows into the gold zone, she will be
:19:13. > :19:22.eliminated, just one out of six so far the Shih-Chia Lin. Her opponent,
:19:23. > :19:30.Bombayla Devi Laishram, has four, including that, her second ten.
:19:31. > :19:47.Bombayla Devi Laishram one set away from moving through to the last 16.
:19:48. > :19:56.Three arrows required in the gold zone here the Shih-Chia Lin.
:19:57. > :20:12.That is her first time, that is more like it.
:20:13. > :20:20.Now the boot is on the other foot all of a sudden.
:20:21. > :20:27.Momentum is a funny thing. Adjustments are made. A chat with
:20:28. > :20:40.the coach, and all of a sudden, it can turn around quickly.
:20:41. > :20:56.That has won the set for Shih-Chia Lin. She just needed seven. We will
:20:57. > :20:57.head into a fourth set. Even though that is a ten from Bombayla Devi
:20:58. > :21:16.Laishram. A good match. Still a lot of work to do for
:21:17. > :21:20.Shih-Chia Lin. The same challenge awaits her in the fourth set as in
:21:21. > :21:29.the third set, she must win it or get a tie. That will take the match
:21:30. > :21:30.into a fifth set. If Bombayla Devi Laishram wins the set, she is into
:21:31. > :22:00.the last 16. Shih-Chia Lin taking a deep breath.
:22:01. > :22:03.The bronze medallist from the team event, silver medallist from the
:22:04. > :22:13.last World Championships in the individual. She needs at least a tie
:22:14. > :22:15.in the set to have any chance, and that is not going to help. A
:22:16. > :22:30.disappointing start. Now it is exceedingly difficult, as
:22:31. > :22:39.Bombayla Devi Laishram puts one in the ten. A comeback from Shih-Chia
:22:40. > :22:59.Lin, but she will be there battling now.
:23:00. > :23:21.She has got a nine, and the Indian goes through to the next round. The
:23:22. > :23:25.silver medallist from the last World Championships is out of this Olympic
:23:26. > :23:37.Games. Defeated by Bombayla Devi Laishram. A very fine performance
:23:38. > :23:45.from the 31-year-old. She defeats the highly rated archer from Chinese
:23:46. > :23:51.Taipei. A good match. In the end, it has been the Indian who has been the
:23:52. > :23:56.more consistent, just two outside the gold zone in the match, and
:23:57. > :24:05.paired with Shih-Chia Lin, who did not shoot well in this one. She had
:24:06. > :24:11.seven outside the gold zone, that is not good enough. She knows that is
:24:12. > :24:13.not enough to get through to the next match. The winner is Bombayla
:24:14. > :24:26.Devi Laishram. Fantastic performance there by the
:24:27. > :24:31.Indian archer. We will show more of the archery on the BBC sport
:24:32. > :24:37.website, the Red Button and the BBC Sport app. Plenty of ways you can
:24:38. > :24:48.follow the archery, if that is what you want to watch.
:24:49. > :25:00.Repetition, it is an art, day in, day out. Eat, sleep, train, repeat.
:25:01. > :25:12.Mastering skills. Building your strength. There are no short cuts.
:25:13. > :25:18.They say practice makes perfect. It is true.
:25:19. > :25:28.This is about fine tuning. Precision. Most of all, it is about
:25:29. > :25:36.passion. That is what drives you to be better. It gives you the strength
:25:37. > :25:45.to go again and again. So you keep going. Until you are ready to
:25:46. > :25:55.deliver. When it really counts. That is the art of repetition.
:25:56. > :25:59.Eat, sleep, train, repeat. That is what it takes to become an Olympian,
:26:00. > :26:04.especially in gymnastics, it is all about routine. After the Great
:26:05. > :26:09.Britain team finished fourth in the men's team final and fifth in the
:26:10. > :26:18.women's, they are still looking for a medal. It could come to light in
:26:19. > :26:26.the form of a certain Max Whitlock. Gymnastics is my life. I have done
:26:27. > :26:35.it since I was seven. It has been an amazing journey. It has made me who
:26:36. > :26:39.I am. In 2015 Max Whitlock won an historic world gold medal, a
:26:40. > :26:44.stunning feat, but before that, a mystery illness had almost ended his
:26:45. > :26:48.year before it began. It was stressful. The beginning of last
:26:49. > :26:52.year. I remember saying to my parents at the beginning of the
:26:53. > :26:58.year, I feel the fittest I have been, then two weeks down the line,
:26:59. > :27:00.the first year of the English championships, it was that area
:27:01. > :27:05.rating. Within a week I went from making routines clean to not being
:27:06. > :27:10.able to do a few skills in combination. I had glandular fever.
:27:11. > :27:17.It was a relief. It lasted three months. It motivated me even more to
:27:18. > :27:22.get back in, it helped me push so hard to produce the results I did at
:27:23. > :27:33.the end of the year. Max Whitlock is the pommel horse world champion! The
:27:34. > :27:38.first time a British men's gymnast has won the gold medal at the World
:27:39. > :27:44.Championships. How many times a day are you here? Six days a week,
:27:45. > :27:52.between five and seven hours a day. It is a great atmosphere to be in,
:27:53. > :27:56.all the guys that I train with. He has never been a superstar. I was
:27:57. > :27:58.told once he struggled to make a team, because his feet and point and
:27:59. > :28:08.stuff like that. But because his feet bend the other
:28:09. > :28:17.way, it helps him stick the dismount. It is because of his feet.
:28:18. > :28:20.It is strange, how it turns out. His forte, he can compete under
:28:21. > :28:28.pressure, late without getting affected by it. This is your
:28:29. > :28:35.specialism. You have mastered this. This is my strongest piece,
:28:36. > :28:38.definitely. A lot of my focus is honoured, I do double sessions every
:28:39. > :28:43.day, I do more than any other piece on this piece of apparatus. At what
:28:44. > :28:49.point do you get your first look at the Olympic Mulhall is and how it
:28:50. > :28:55.feels and what it looks like? The exact one, we will have one
:28:56. > :28:58.opportunity, on podium training, a few days before qualification. That
:28:59. > :29:04.is our only opportunity to see what it is like. That is a beautiful
:29:05. > :29:13.routine, Max Whitlock is challenging for a medal. That was super stuff.
:29:14. > :29:18.That was first-class! I was only 19, not expected to produce any results.
:29:19. > :29:22.I helped with the team result, that is the first time we did it in a
:29:23. > :29:28.hundred years. Nobody can ever take that away from these boys. For me to
:29:29. > :29:35.get an individual bronze was unreal. I did not feel under the radar, I
:29:36. > :29:39.was so pleased with my achievement. How does it feel to have overtaken
:29:40. > :29:46.Louis Smith a bit? You are top dog now. It is still a close
:29:47. > :29:51.competition, we both have high scores, we just need to produce
:29:52. > :29:56.clean routines, but it is pushing both of us even more, which is best
:29:57. > :30:01.for our team. What is it like, going into an Olympic Games as reigning
:30:02. > :30:04.world champion? Some people see it as more pressure, but I see it as a
:30:05. > :30:10.result in my bag, it calms me, knowing I have it. The Olympics is
:30:11. > :30:13.the pinnacle of everyone's career, it would be hard for it not to be
:30:14. > :30:19.overwhelming. I can't wait to compete.
:30:20. > :30:24.Katherine Downes doing the report frost and talk all things men's
:30:25. > :30:30.all-round individual final tonight, Craig Heap, the former Great Britain
:30:31. > :30:34.gymnast has joined us. I think it is drizzling indoors now! I think it is
:30:35. > :30:40.actually. We brought the weather from Manchester to Brazil. Feels
:30:41. > :30:44.like home! Warm and lovely! Max Whitlock is a superstar, a real one,
:30:45. > :30:50.and we have not had many of those in gymnastics over the years. It brings
:30:51. > :30:55.pressure doesn't it? He is the flag bearer. As we saw in qualification,
:30:56. > :31:00.things can go wrong for him. He seems to be one of those gymnasts
:31:01. > :31:03.that has a shaky start and grows into the competition. You probably
:31:04. > :31:09.think is the rounds go on people get more tired but he seems to get
:31:10. > :31:12.better and better. Last year in the World Championships, the same kind
:31:13. > :31:19.of qualification, a bit poor, went to the all-around final, Bell on the
:31:20. > :31:22.high bar and ended up fifth. In 2014, Paul qualification, ended up
:31:23. > :31:27.with an all-round silver medal, matching that of Daniel Keatings. We
:31:28. > :31:31.know he has got the capability to get onto the podium. He's definitely
:31:32. > :31:37.got it in him but in qualification this time around it did not go all
:31:38. > :31:41.of his way. Let's look at how Max managed to get into the top eight in
:31:42. > :31:45.the finals but it was not his day in particular and he had trouble with
:31:46. > :31:49.the volt. It's a really difficult one, the triple twist, and he has
:31:50. > :31:54.worked on his start value so he needs the difficulty. That is
:31:55. > :31:59.wonderful Mark gone. We know he can add a full mark on to that which
:32:00. > :32:04.will push into the 89s. I think honestly to get the podium, you need
:32:05. > :32:11.90 plus. You can see, he blocks off the volt, wrapping three twists, not
:32:12. > :32:16.many bigger vaults, not all the way around, hips slightly back and he
:32:17. > :32:18.falls over. One mark lost. You would like to think he will take that
:32:19. > :32:23.experience and know what can go wrong and put it right in the final.
:32:24. > :32:26.Again, he lost a mark in the high bar as well which is a bit of a
:32:27. > :32:33.lottery sometimes when you are putting in so much difficulty. You
:32:34. > :32:36.can see, does something called a Markolov over the bar and catches in
:32:37. > :32:39.a mixed grip and when your hands are so close together, it is so
:32:40. > :32:43.difficult to crush your hands and get the right hand on top of the
:32:44. > :32:47.bar. That was the real problem with that. But he went in the team
:32:48. > :32:50.competition and did that a lot better and performed his fault a lot
:32:51. > :32:57.better which will give him the confidence to be right up for this
:32:58. > :33:02.all-round fight. -- is vault. It's going to be at it and fight because
:33:03. > :33:06.he's not the only one going in the all-around final, Nile Wilson has
:33:07. > :33:10.risen to the stage. I was with him in the village a couple of days ago
:33:11. > :33:17.and he is so excited to be here. He is just free and flying. He
:33:18. > :33:22.absolutely has the performance aspect of gymnastics. You can see
:33:23. > :33:26.him land and he's like, "Come on!" It's a bit like a scene from
:33:27. > :33:31.Braveheart. But that is what sport is all about. You have to be able to
:33:32. > :33:35.perform. He reminds me a bit of Max, four years ago before London. Nobody
:33:36. > :33:39.had heard of Max Whitlock and suddenly, he's on the podium picking
:33:40. > :33:43.up a bronze medal behind Louis Smith. The last four years, it has
:33:44. > :33:48.all been about Max Whitlock is going to do this and can he perform under
:33:49. > :33:51.pressure? Actually, Nile Wilson is going to go into this, he qualified
:33:52. > :33:56.in fifth place and he's got the capability of hitting the 90s so if
:33:57. > :34:02.you are a betting man, I'd put a few quid on him. And his dad is here as
:34:03. > :34:06.well. How do you put this? He has propositioned exactly what he might
:34:07. > :34:11.do with Nile Wilson gets on the podium. He has indeed, a few years
:34:12. > :34:15.ago when we saw Nile win his first-ever medal, he had his shirt
:34:16. > :34:20.off and I saw him, I was running back into the gymnastics and ran
:34:21. > :34:23.into his dad, union Jack shirt, his mum with a union Jack dress, his
:34:24. > :34:29.sister with Team GB everything. And I asked if the shirt was coming. He
:34:30. > :34:34.said he has not been to the gym that nothing that you have nothing. If
:34:35. > :34:39.Nile Wilson does well, keep your eyes peeled on the audience because
:34:40. > :34:43.we will have a seminaked Mr Wilson. Mr Wilson is going to get naked
:34:44. > :34:47.tonight, it kicks off at 8pm UK time. The competition will be tough,
:34:48. > :34:52.Oleg Verniaiev, the Ukrainian, was the top qualifier in the all-around
:34:53. > :34:56.and just behind him, the six time world champion, who tomorrow, the
:34:57. > :35:01.one to beat. He certainly years and that what the real shock of
:35:02. > :35:06.qualification, he made mistakes. Actually, everyone has talked about
:35:07. > :35:10.could anyone beat him for the last couple of years and looks like he
:35:11. > :35:17.could be beta now. Alex Wyatt, probably the best in Europe with
:35:18. > :35:21.Max. He posted a massive 91.8 something. The first time anyone has
:35:22. > :35:26.gone in front of the Japanese in the last 12 months. In the team
:35:27. > :35:31.competition, Ukraine were very smart. They realised they had no
:35:32. > :35:36.chance of winning the team medal. They rested him. Everyone was
:35:37. > :35:39.wondering what elegant and I have was but smart, he did two pieces of
:35:40. > :35:45.apparatus so in the competition, he's only done eight routines. Max
:35:46. > :35:50.has done 12. But for Max, actually, it works better for him. It's not
:35:51. > :35:55.going to be an easy ride for anyone to get onto the podium tonight.
:35:56. > :36:02.China, very strong. Deng qualified up there as well and you will have
:36:03. > :36:06.the American and the Russia, excelled in taking the team silver
:36:07. > :36:13.medal, led by David Belyavskiy. Also, let's think about Manrique
:36:14. > :36:18.Larduet from Cuba. No one had heard of him going into last year's World
:36:19. > :36:22.Championships and he qualified in about 15th place, but took the
:36:23. > :36:26.all-around silver medal. It is going to be probably one of the most
:36:27. > :36:31.exciting competitions of the whole gymnastics tournament. All right,
:36:32. > :36:33.keep an eye out for him and also the Team GB voice. Let's look at how
:36:34. > :36:40.they will match up tonight because you will be in the arena this
:36:41. > :36:43.evening. Max qualified in 12th, as Craig was alluding to. Nile Wilson
:36:44. > :36:50.finished fifth in qualification so they will kick off with these. Good
:36:51. > :36:54.for Max to get on his pommel horse bust up? Absolutely, that is best
:36:55. > :36:59.piece of apparatus by Miles and he can post 16. We have not seen many
:37:00. > :37:02.of those in the competition. I think if he starts off on pommel horse and
:37:03. > :37:08.goes into the lead, it will do his confidence knowing that good. But
:37:09. > :37:12.likewise, Nile will start strongly in full. The top gymnast from
:37:13. > :37:16.qualification start on floor and do the Olympic order and then the next
:37:17. > :37:20.batch go down. I think it is good for Max not to be in the leading
:37:21. > :37:26.group with all the spotlight on them. But likewise, Nile is going to
:37:27. > :37:32.take the fight to the big guns. He will love that environment! Against
:37:33. > :37:37.the best in the world. I think it is a good draw for both of them. Max
:37:38. > :37:43.will finish on the floor. This is something that he has qualified for
:37:44. > :37:47.the floor final. He posted 15.5 in qualification and did a bit better,
:37:48. > :37:50.his routine, I think, did not score as well in the team event but he is
:37:51. > :37:54.going to score well on the last piece of apparatus. It is going to
:37:55. > :37:59.go down to the wire. Six rotations. That means they have got to hit six
:38:00. > :38:03.out of six routines if they want to get on the rostrum. No time for the
:38:04. > :38:09.box, put your money where your mouth is, who's going to come out on top,
:38:10. > :38:13.Wilson all with clock? My mind is thinking, the experience of
:38:14. > :38:18.Whitlock, but who would I like to see? In sport, I always like to see
:38:19. > :38:23.an underdog doing well, so if Nile Wilson can get up there, I would be
:38:24. > :38:27.so pleased for the young man. And the prospect of his father getting
:38:28. > :38:34.his chest out Dier dragger maybe not! Can I change my mind? It is all
:38:35. > :38:38.set up, 8pm this evening, the chance to see the GB men doing battle in
:38:39. > :38:43.the all-around individual final this evening. Craig Heap, we will see you
:38:44. > :38:48.then. Thank you for joining us. We are going to move on from gymnastics
:38:49. > :38:51.now and talk about water polo. We will feature the nine time Olympic
:38:52. > :38:55.champions Hungary in the men's competition, the greatest water polo
:38:56. > :39:03.nation of all time. Before we get to the action. Here is a guide.
:39:04. > :39:12.Water polo has been an Olympic sport since 1900 in Paris. There are seven
:39:13. > :39:15.players in a team, six so-called outfield players and a goalkeeper.
:39:16. > :39:19.But they are allowed six reserves and unlimited substitutions.
:39:20. > :39:23.Substitutes are crucial because of the gruelling nature of the sport
:39:24. > :39:27.with players not allowed to touch the bottom of the pool at any point
:39:28. > :39:30.during a match. The best way to stay upright and ready is to keep the
:39:31. > :39:35.legs moving alternately backwards and forwards in what is known as the
:39:36. > :39:40.eggbeater motion. There are two important lines in water polo, the
:39:41. > :39:43.two metre line and a five metre line. The two metre line is two
:39:44. > :39:46.metres from the goal and the attacking team are not allowed to
:39:47. > :39:50.pass this line unless they have possession of the ball or it is
:39:51. > :39:53.already in that area. If an attacking player is fouled within
:39:54. > :39:57.five metres of the goal, the referee can award a penalty shot from the
:39:58. > :40:00.five metre line. If a foul is committed further out than five
:40:01. > :40:05.metres, a free throw is awarded. Goalkeepers are allowed to use two
:40:06. > :40:09.hands during playback outfield players can only use one hand at the
:40:10. > :40:13.time. The game is split into four quarters of eight minutes but
:40:14. > :40:17.although the total playing time is only 32 minutes, the game usually
:40:18. > :40:20.lasts for over an hour because it is stopped and started regularly. Each
:40:21. > :40:24.quarter begins with the two teams lined up on their goal lines and
:40:25. > :40:28.when the referee blows the whistle, the team's sprint towards the ball
:40:29. > :40:32.in the centre of the pool. A shot clock controls the time for shooting
:40:33. > :40:38.in water polo because when in possession, teams only have 30
:40:39. > :40:42.seconds to shoot at goal. We have been enjoying the water polo
:40:43. > :40:45.on BBC Four and we have another matchup for you that will tickle the
:40:46. > :40:51.taste buds. We are going to watch Greece against Hungary. Joining them
:40:52. > :40:56.in the second quarter. In the first quarter, we saw the Greeks take the
:40:57. > :41:02.early lead, the bronze medallists from 2012, going ahead after a
:41:03. > :41:05.couple of minutes down there in the Aquatics Centre but you cannot hold
:41:06. > :41:10.the Hungarian is down and they were quick to equalise after that. They
:41:11. > :41:18.scored two late goals at the end of the first quarter. So they go into
:41:19. > :41:21.the second quarter leading 2-1. Greece won their first game Andrew
:41:22. > :41:27.against Serbia in the second. Hungary have had two draws out of
:41:28. > :41:32.two so far. So both teams really need to win to boost their chances
:41:33. > :41:40.of qualifying in a good position for the knockout stages. Hungary, as I
:41:41. > :41:43.said, taking the lead at the end of the first quarter. We are going to
:41:44. > :41:47.join the Common Terry down there at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in
:41:48. > :41:51.the second quarter, Brent Pope talking us through a rather green
:41:52. > :41:59.looking pool in the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre. Brent, over to you.
:42:00. > :42:09.COMMENTATOR: Still overcast in Rio's Olympic park. This is the Maria Lenk
:42:10. > :42:20.Aquatics Centre, named after the famous Brazilian swimmer. Renovated,
:42:21. > :42:27.this centre, for these Olympics. And what a powerful scene, there is, as
:42:28. > :42:31.we just see how desperate they are to open with possession but it will
:42:32. > :42:37.be Hungary. They have a size and power advantage and some of that
:42:38. > :42:40.tells in the opening sprint off, for sure. In a straight line, without
:42:41. > :42:48.having to deal with another player on new. And equally, the wrestle to
:42:49. > :42:57.get the ball in control when you finally get there. Hungary in the
:42:58. > :43:01.loop cap, trying to get to a team-mate. Gabor Kis, who is
:43:02. > :43:07.dangerous from there. He does not get it the first time, from the
:43:08. > :43:12.outside, a bit of a hitch, trying to pull him one way or the other, he is
:43:13. > :43:17.patient and waiting. The shot maybe from Varga, he elects to off-load.
:43:18. > :43:19.From this distance, a Greek arm gets up and a good defensive stance from
:43:20. > :43:39.the Greeks. All of the medals at Olympic level
:43:40. > :43:43.in the pool at the moment belong to the Hungarian programme. They have
:43:44. > :43:49.not won one in the men's water polo, Greece. But they are giving
:43:50. > :43:54.themselves as good a chance to qualify for this quarterfinal round
:43:55. > :44:00.and a goal right here will continue to stand them in good stead. Hungary
:44:01. > :44:05.have not been able to convert as yet. One from one with the player
:44:06. > :44:10.advantages for Greece, they will need a second, here. They would love
:44:11. > :44:13.to keep this at a 100% record. Thought he would shoot, the wide
:44:14. > :44:19.side is available and there it is, right in the back, in the heart of
:44:20. > :44:30.the goal! What a shot from the Greek, and it was a punishing
:44:31. > :44:35.delivery, probably with the right, and the shot comes in and it has got
:44:36. > :44:43.punch on it from Alexander's Gooners. -- Alexandra 's Gooners. A
:44:44. > :44:49.ripping to the right side of goal. He will take it. That looked to be a
:44:50. > :45:04.much more surgical approach. His first Olympic Games, -- Gounas and
:45:05. > :45:08.that is his first Olympic gold. -- goal. A battle going on and it leads
:45:09. > :45:11.to an exclusion for the Greek player will stop a shot there, quickly
:45:12. > :45:20.coming back, no time wasted, very definite approach are there, from
:45:21. > :45:23.Balazs Erdelyi. You can see him appealing and looking to the sky.
:45:24. > :45:28.That is the kind of confidence from the Hungarian is, the strike, you
:45:29. > :45:37.can see it, there is the leaving Greek defender. -- Hungarians. When
:45:38. > :45:40.you try to make sense that kind of mayhem, that is tough and that is
:45:41. > :45:43.just under the right arm and a little bit of daylight is struck at
:45:44. > :45:57.right time. A shot from the Hungarian.
:45:58. > :46:11.Three goals so far in their tournament, his first of the day.
:46:12. > :46:15.Match in the three for both teams, this is day five of the men's water
:46:16. > :46:30.polo competition. Greece again searching for the
:46:31. > :46:36.levelling marker. It goes off the outside of the goal frame. It looks
:46:37. > :46:44.to be a confident sense from that position. Finally, it is released,
:46:45. > :46:48.but it is too tight to goal. Georgios Dervisis has a couple of
:46:49. > :46:52.major filed against him, he is one away from being suspended. Just for
:46:53. > :47:04.this match. That is what three major fouls and
:47:05. > :47:11.man two. It is a save from Konstantinos Flegkas. Looking a bit
:47:12. > :47:25.more anxious in his eyes that he has done. The Hungarians are
:47:26. > :47:31.unrelenting. Five blocked shots. That is maybe entirely wide there
:47:32. > :47:37.has been a hazard and Greek approach. A stronger, more
:47:38. > :47:43.considered defensive structure in this match, Hungary. That is helping
:47:44. > :48:01.their goalkeeper no end. That was wasteful. It seemed to be a
:48:02. > :48:04.halfway house between taking a shot and trying to drop it to the centre
:48:05. > :48:11.forward position, and it was neither.
:48:12. > :48:23.You see the cap coming off of the Hungary and player. He gets back
:48:24. > :48:33.into a good position. That is of the frame. It was a long way from goal.
:48:34. > :48:41.It was almost fruitful again. Look at that shot. It had enough to beat
:48:42. > :48:46.Viktor Nagy, but it was not quite accurate enough from Ioannis
:48:47. > :48:51.Fountoulis. He is one they can count on. Just could not quite make it
:48:52. > :49:04.count on that shot. Hungary would like a bit of
:49:05. > :49:10.daylight. It is a strange ploy to go back and. It might be an injury to
:49:11. > :49:15.the Greece player. We see him breathing heavy. He got that right
:49:16. > :49:23.in the face. That was startled you as much as anything. I have not seen
:49:24. > :49:25.that from that distance. You wonder if it is an intimidating shop to buy
:49:26. > :49:37.some space. It will lead to an exclusion. A
:49:38. > :49:45.couple of incidents where Hungary are progressing this Greek team.
:49:46. > :49:55.Using their physical strength to play an aggressive brand of water
:49:56. > :50:05.polo. Rising up, right there, inside -- on the side of the head. I have
:50:06. > :50:10.not seen that approach. It was Norbert Hosnyanszky, the veteran, in
:50:11. > :50:14.his third Olympic Games. The spinning round has shot, the full
:50:15. > :50:22.force taken by the Greek defender, right in the head. That is hard
:50:23. > :50:26.work. It is not entirely how you want to play defence. It is more by
:50:27. > :50:41.circumstance than by design. A couple of major fouls from
:50:42. > :50:47.Kyriakos Pontikeas. Greece are feeling the weight of the Hungary in
:50:48. > :50:52.attack. They do well there to get away without conceding. They will
:50:53. > :51:04.take it. They are keeping themselves in touch. The tight games. Every
:51:05. > :51:13.little possession, trying to tie at the defence, is a part of gaining
:51:14. > :51:19.advantage for later in the match. So much harder to play defence than
:51:20. > :51:25.fence. That is a great save from Viktor Nagy. It seems to be a
:51:26. > :51:34.preferred position, the right driving area on that side. Those are
:51:35. > :51:44.save that are impacting on the final scoreline. It could have jumped over
:51:45. > :51:49.Viktor Nagy, he was anticipating it. It could have been a hitch and a
:51:50. > :52:01.lofted shot up and over. But here they will come.
:52:02. > :52:09.Hungary have been weighing heavily on Greece in their defensive half.
:52:10. > :52:12.They will have to give it up. The work begins to get back into
:52:13. > :52:29.defensive formation. Greece may be need to employ a
:52:30. > :52:38.different approach. They will have to be efficient with their shots.
:52:39. > :52:44.You have to execute. Viktor Nagy is enjoying himself, as good a spell as
:52:45. > :52:56.he has had. A couple of point-blank saves being made. He needs that, to
:52:57. > :53:00.Will his team on. They are trying to increase their lead and take it to a
:53:01. > :53:05.2-goal margin. It is deflected up and over. One more time Greece
:53:06. > :53:08.holding them at bay, they have a chance to level this match in the
:53:09. > :53:22.closing stages of the first half. A time-out from Theodoros Vlachos.
:53:23. > :53:38.Let's settle things down one more time.
:53:39. > :53:49.The Greece fans up and at them in support of their team. How will this
:53:50. > :53:58.one go? They have had a strong tournament so far. Six teams in each
:53:59. > :54:02.group. Only the top four go through. A strong save percentage so far from
:54:03. > :54:20.Konstantinos Flegkas, doing his part. Over 60%. It is those margins,
:54:21. > :54:29.between 60 and 70, that make the difference between the scoreline at
:54:30. > :54:30.this level. Viktor Nagy is at 60%. Anything in that region and better
:54:31. > :54:52.is good going. The referee not quite happy yet. It
:54:53. > :55:00.is blocked out. They is the expiration of the shot clock.
:55:01. > :55:13.The time-out called by the Hungarians. It is half-time. They
:55:14. > :55:21.allowed the clock to continue. They will take the credit at half-time.
:55:22. > :55:23.It is all business in the men's water polo.
:55:24. > :55:32.We will be back to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre shortly. We will
:55:33. > :55:38.leave it there, with Hungary leading 3-2. We are back in a minute, but
:55:39. > :55:44.let's bring you up to date with the weather. To do my best Michael Fish
:55:45. > :55:49.impression, we are dry, but the weather is doing whatever it wants.
:55:50. > :55:57.We have had wet, wind, it has tried now, but it is still pretty murky
:55:58. > :56:01.and horrible. As we were telling you, the weather has put paid to the
:56:02. > :56:07.roving schedule until further notice. We will not have any rowing
:56:08. > :56:13.today. This is the state of affairs. You can see how choppy it is. The
:56:14. > :56:22.weather has postponed the tennis schedule. Unfortunately, no roof
:56:23. > :56:28.here. This is Centre Court. People looking up at the sky, wondering if
:56:29. > :56:31.we will see any tennis today. Andy Murray and Johanna Konta scheduled
:56:32. > :56:38.to be in action, but for now, you have to sit and wait. Hopefully we
:56:39. > :56:43.will have some tennis on the fifth day of the Olympics. Thankfully the
:56:44. > :56:52.weather has not stopped the road race, the time trial is taking place
:56:53. > :56:57.today. Kristin Armstrong of the USA has made it three consecutive
:56:58. > :57:02.Olympic medals, the 42-year-old, who retired after 2012, came back out of
:57:03. > :57:11.retirement, and what a great decision. How happy she is. She beat
:57:12. > :57:16.the Russian and the Dutch woman, who won the road race earlier on in the
:57:17. > :57:25.competition. She goes away with two medals, a gold and a bronze. Let's
:57:26. > :57:30.check in on what is going on with the men's Road race. The time trial
:57:31. > :57:35.is under way. You can see this on the Red Button. Chris Froome will be
:57:36. > :57:41.taking to the road later. Slippery conditions. I don't know if we will
:57:42. > :57:47.see any record times, but Chris Froome will be riding on the men's
:57:48. > :57:52.time trial, hoping to add to the bronze medal he won in 2012. That is
:57:53. > :57:59.on the Red Button. Next on BBC One, it is boxing, and Great Britain's
:58:00. > :58:06.bantamweight Qais Ashfaq will take to the ring in 45 minutes for his
:58:07. > :58:10.first encounter. Here on BBC Four, let's get back to water polo, it is
:58:11. > :58:12.Greece against Hungary at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, Hungary
:58:13. > :58:20.leading going into the second half. Making sure he is happy, and the
:58:21. > :58:35.whistle is blown. Hungary have been stronger. Not so
:58:36. > :58:44.fast now. Greece will take control, in the whitecaps, from left to right
:58:45. > :58:51.in the second half. Back to a full complement of players. The first
:58:52. > :58:58.shot from Greece, that was as good a look as they have had, and the blogs
:58:59. > :59:02.continue to mount up for Hungary. A big part of it for the goalkeeping
:59:03. > :59:09.percentage is changing the goal-scoring opportunities. Another
:59:10. > :59:16.save from Konstantinos Flegkas. He gets his hand on it. Both teams as
:59:17. > :59:20.willing to shoot early... That was going in, without a doubt. The
:59:21. > :59:26.right-hand doing enough to ricochet the ball into a free throw, and play
:59:27. > :59:35.will continue for Hungary in the offensive portion of the poor.
:59:36. > :59:39.The whistle comes, it leads to an exclusion. The extra player, the
:59:40. > :59:52.advantage for Hungary. It is building, the calm before the
:59:53. > :59:57.flurry. It does not need to be a long one, it could be a quick
:59:58. > :00:06.strike. There it is, right on the button. The defence do enough to
:00:07. > :00:12.keep that approach at bay. All the way forward. The quick transition
:00:13. > :00:21.from Greece, they can take a chance to level. It is 3-3.
:00:22. > :00:32.He took off as if he was in his own pool, all the way forward. They will
:00:33. > :00:36.not be able to defend that one. We have seen those opportunities not
:00:37. > :00:41.converted. That was a little bit of a kitchen movement right over the
:00:42. > :00:44.head. Probably the best place for it. The arms more difficult to get
:00:45. > :00:53.right above the head of a keeper than they are to get left and right.
:00:54. > :00:55.That is a critical, transitional counterattack from Greece. They have
:00:56. > :01:16.levelled it. The struggle. For a closer
:01:17. > :01:22.proximity. A better angle and equally, enough fitness involved to
:01:23. > :01:28.keep them honest, with a little bit of a lofted toss over it but it is
:01:29. > :01:33.well beyond the crossbar. For the first time, in a considerable chunk
:01:34. > :01:52.of this match, Greece have a chance to go and take the lead.
:01:53. > :02:00.They have got it again and just like that, they turn this thing around.
:02:01. > :02:11.The second half is very kind indeed to the Greeks. He has to wonder if
:02:12. > :02:30.this will be a moment that the Hungarians really rue that shot.
:02:31. > :02:39.That meant everything for the Greeks and they will catch -- catch that in
:02:40. > :02:49.and Genidounias with his second Olympic gold. His first Olympic
:02:50. > :02:54.Games. My goodness. We have really seen two different complexions to
:02:55. > :03:01.this match so far. The Hungarians ball Don King at times, they have
:03:02. > :03:14.really been a physical force, showing some real range and skill in
:03:15. > :03:15.their shooting. Here come the Greeks again. They have someone to keep
:03:16. > :03:26.coming. He might have made better work of
:03:27. > :03:31.that attempt. You always feel when you shoot it softly, and it is not
:03:32. > :03:33.successful, that you really could have given it a better crack than
:03:34. > :03:48.that. The idea to counterattack by the
:03:49. > :03:54.Hungarians is quickly thwarted and that was a hostile delivery. You
:03:55. > :04:02.think there may be would have got better but that was a fair, honest
:04:03. > :04:09.crack at it. This approach could lead them to control in this match.
:04:10. > :04:14.A promising strike, it ricochets over and they get the benefit of
:04:15. > :04:25.another 30 seconds and that is a favourable ricochet. We cannot
:04:26. > :04:26.legislate further. As to where the ball will end up. It could go any
:04:27. > :04:42.direction. Steady and constructive build-up
:04:43. > :04:49.from the Greeks. Is this a violation from behind the Greek player? You
:04:50. > :05:02.see the resignation of the Hungarian defender, that is Adam Dekker, the
:05:03. > :05:05.centre back. They will get the opportunity you muck straight up on
:05:06. > :05:20.a penalty shot. The Greeks with a glorious chance.
:05:21. > :05:31.They will score and look at that moment. Delighted as Gounas pumps
:05:32. > :05:38.his right fist. This was the battle that in stewed, that led to the call
:05:39. > :05:44.and that moment for Greece could in fact be decisive when it comes time
:05:45. > :05:56.to determining the quarterfinal participants. Gounas, what a goal
:05:57. > :06:04.and what a moment for the Greeks. His second goal of these games. His
:06:05. > :06:14.first games. Both of them, he has got in this particular matchup. The
:06:15. > :06:19.whistle coming in one more time. Hungary really need to express their
:06:20. > :06:25.intention. They cannot spot for much longer. They had the lead at
:06:26. > :06:30.half-time. They have let three goals in already and nothing for
:06:31. > :06:37.themselves. There is a feed, pretty strong defence. A look to the
:06:38. > :06:46.central position. That is a torpedo of right arm and it comes in
:06:47. > :06:55.harrowing, and the veteran finds the mark, showing leadership when they
:06:56. > :07:00.need it. Hosnyanszky brings the thunder, it is a sledgehammer.
:07:01. > :07:11.Hosnyanszky delighted, as is the coach.
:07:12. > :07:16.Not so fast for the Greeks trying to increase their lead. This will be
:07:17. > :07:38.jostled back and forth now. Different angles being presented to
:07:39. > :07:43.the Greeks but there are again ways back. They can score from there.
:07:44. > :07:56.There is another strike and another return and look at that. Mourikis
:07:57. > :08:01.with the approving head nod and rightly so, he was under all sorts
:08:02. > :08:10.of a fronting from the Hungarian defender. Double fist points. He
:08:11. > :08:14.just overcooked it a little bit and the referee is saying, you really
:08:15. > :08:24.need to keep that in check because that is on the edge of being
:08:25. > :08:31.unsportsmanlike. Interesting moment but it doesn't prove costly. This is
:08:32. > :08:39.his second Olympics. 175 international matches. That will be
:08:40. > :08:44.his fifth Olympic gold. Wow. That was a strike that shows you the
:08:45. > :08:49.Hungarians have now locked it down and they are just going to take
:08:50. > :08:54.their chances when they come. The feed right into the heart of the
:08:55. > :09:04.defence. Strong, append a ball flight. There he is, the
:09:05. > :09:10.29-year-old. He just takes his second goal of the match. From the
:09:11. > :09:21.opportunities he has had. Just nine minutes he has played in this one.
:09:22. > :09:29.But they have been affected. Dekker right on the cusp with the two major
:09:30. > :09:36.fouls. The order of the Decker brothers on this Hungarian seed
:09:37. > :09:47.inside two minutes now. Inside five seconds on the shot clock.
:09:48. > :09:51.In the end, his team-mate had it from him and this is the
:09:52. > :09:57.communication going on, that the pass from the defender, to the
:09:58. > :10:03.goalkeeper is a grey area in water polo and that is why they were
:10:04. > :10:07.appealing so heavily. They come right back and level it but it goes
:10:08. > :10:14.off the frame and now you are sensing the tension rising. That is
:10:15. > :10:21.the double coconut of the right post and then off the goalkeeper's head.
:10:22. > :10:27.Pinball action inside the Greek goal. But they will take that if it
:10:28. > :10:31.means it stays out. The referee just wanting to bring a little bit of
:10:32. > :10:35.calm to proceedings but it is a time out that has been called by the
:10:36. > :10:39.Greeks. They need to take this possession and go forward and try to
:10:40. > :10:50.reassert themselves and re-establish that two goal lead. Vlachos got a
:10:51. > :10:57.yellow card, he will need to keep calm. That was for appealing they
:10:58. > :11:03.should be something in it. Szivos also an two major fouls. Everyone is
:11:04. > :11:09.getting a clear warning out to say, let's keep a bit of calm to
:11:10. > :11:17.proceedings here. Before somebody is going to have to leave the party.
:11:18. > :11:28.Back to action and it will be Greece in the whitecaps to take control.
:11:29. > :11:32.They would love to try to manage the remaining minutes of this and also
:11:33. > :11:37.get a return for their efforts to increase their scoreline. And
:11:38. > :11:41.increased the advantage. A little bit of savvy there. They are
:11:42. > :11:46.suggesting they are being restrained. The way you see the head
:11:47. > :11:53.coming back. It is a little bit about managing what the referees do
:11:54. > :11:57.see as well. It is often impossible, I suspect, to see everything,
:11:58. > :11:59.especially with the splashing water and what is going on underneath the
:12:00. > :12:10.surface. Now, they are inside of 30 seconds
:12:11. > :12:14.remaining in this period. They have now ten seconds there and they have
:12:15. > :12:21.given it up. The referee is not happy. Hungry good level again. They
:12:22. > :12:29.have the same struggle but they carry on. Decker suggesting he got a
:12:30. > :12:35.knuckle sandwich in the right cheekbone. I suspect that isn't the
:12:36. > :12:52.first time that has happened. Time out from the Hungarians. This
:12:53. > :12:55.is a chance for them to level the match. They know they have to take
:12:56. > :13:28.it. Hungry with control at 24 seconds in
:13:29. > :13:35.this third period. And the hands grapple again. The proverbial ear
:13:36. > :13:41.twist. It is tough to get it. They have turned it over. The Greek
:13:42. > :13:45.player had an anchor on him. Pretty considerable anger. ?220 of
:13:46. > :13:53.Hungarian player. They will shoot from a distance.
:13:54. > :14:00.Greece probably quite content in fairness. Considering where they
:14:01. > :14:07.were at the end of half-time. After three periods of play, instead of
:14:08. > :14:36.being behind by one, they are up by one.
:14:37. > :14:58.Under way, the opening sprint. Well taken by Greece. They won that one
:14:59. > :15:07.by at least a stroke. In the whitecaps. Hungary really pushing to
:15:08. > :15:10.address their defence as far away from their own goal as they have
:15:11. > :15:17.done. It creates more space when that pass does release. It really is
:15:18. > :15:29.shades of grey. . The long-range shot goes to the
:15:30. > :15:52.right of goal. Now a sense of calm settles over the
:15:53. > :16:03.pool area. The crowd are tensely anticipating. There could be drama
:16:04. > :16:11.for both sides. Hungary are now having to work against that shot
:16:12. > :16:17.clock. They strike with lethal force! What a moment to grab. That
:16:18. > :16:26.is Daniel Varga who takes his moment. And he takes it with a
:16:27. > :16:42.world-class delivery to the bottom left side of goal. It says it all.
:16:43. > :16:45.Benedek, willing his team to take these chances. Varga gets a
:16:46. > :17:35.tremendous return for that approach. Greece are now going to have to
:17:36. > :17:43.retreat. They were behind, but they quickly struck to take the lead. Now
:17:44. > :18:01.it's level again. One more time. It's a quick striking opportunity.
:18:02. > :18:09.This looks like a rejuvenated offensive machine, the Hungarians.
:18:10. > :18:14.They are going to take their chances from wide and from distance. Up goes
:18:15. > :18:37.the Greece player. It is a hesitant approach from the
:18:38. > :18:42.Hungarians. The whistle had blown before. I don't think they will
:18:43. > :18:54.allow that. What is happening? Punching is being claimed. Fleck as
:18:55. > :18:58.-- Konstantinos Flegkas says that is just not water polo. It was getting
:18:59. > :19:32.beyond the bounds of what should be allowed, was his suggestion.
:19:33. > :19:56.The shot has to be taken by somebody, and it is accusing
:19:57. > :20:05.approach from the inside. That is potentially a strike to glory. The
:20:06. > :20:08.seventh goal for Hungary. And all of that posturing and all of what was
:20:09. > :20:19.going on physically between him and the Greek defenders ultimately leads
:20:20. > :20:30.to that. He has seized his moment, Balazs Harai.
:20:31. > :20:53.A trio of goals, his hat-trick for the day. Good work from the man with
:20:54. > :21:06.over 200 caps. But where does that goal sit in the final tally of this
:21:07. > :21:17.match? Five minutes to be played. Greece need to rejuvenate
:21:18. > :21:23.themselves. It will have to be eight piece of skill. Hungary are going to
:21:24. > :21:40.lose a man. That will encourage Greece. The shot goes off the gold
:21:41. > :21:42.frame. It stays in the playing area. That shot had all sorts of tempo on
:21:43. > :22:05.it. A clean approach here from Greece.
:22:06. > :22:24.They get the Brek Shea of Nagy -- the ricochet. A stroke of genius.
:22:25. > :22:25.Use everything to your advantage. He could not have anticipated that. And
:22:26. > :22:47.nor did Nagy in time. A couple of goals today for his
:22:48. > :23:15.work, none bigger than that one, but both just as important.
:23:16. > :23:24.That is a battle that has been won mostly by the Hungarians. But not
:23:25. > :23:30.this time, and they give it up. Any time you feel that you want to try
:23:31. > :23:38.and anticipate who will take the points in this one, you realise how
:23:39. > :23:55.silly that is, because this could go all ways from Sunday. What a steal
:23:56. > :23:57.by the Hungarians. Hungary, swimming into a promising possibility of
:23:58. > :24:12.another shot on goal. Flegkas, trying to increase his size
:24:13. > :24:16.through the ankle. Greece will lose a player. The extra man advantage
:24:17. > :24:47.for Hungary. Oh, they squeeze it in! Ramos gets
:24:48. > :24:51.an element of luck on that shot. Flegkas is there in time. He has
:24:52. > :24:58.both hands to it, but his proximity to the post creates a bitter
:24:59. > :25:07.ricocheting return, and he can't keep it in front of the goal line.
:25:08. > :25:17.The Hungarians returned the favour within interest.
:25:18. > :25:47.The pressure is now on Greece to come up with something impressive to
:25:48. > :25:48.beat this Hungarian team. There is a tussle going on in that centre area
:25:49. > :26:14.again in front of the goal. Time is precious. That goes off the
:26:15. > :26:20.crossbar. They had the extra player. But it did not have the accuracy
:26:21. > :26:25.required. Delakas receives his third major file. He will watch the rest
:26:26. > :26:34.from the sidelines. -- he receives his third foul. This is a telling
:26:35. > :26:43.moment for Hungary. Greece are against the ropes. But they are
:26:44. > :26:54.still in the ring, and they are swinging. Now a bit of calm as the
:26:55. > :27:13.Hungarians shout orders to each other.
:27:14. > :27:25.The Hungarians are trying to see if they can get another infringement
:27:26. > :27:32.against the Greeks. There is going to be a time-out called. They need
:27:33. > :27:35.to discuss this. With 37 seconds remaining, a chance for Greece to
:27:36. > :27:42.get something from this match. They will take a draw at this stage, you
:27:43. > :27:48.would suspect. With a draw, at least there is a point from it. They have
:27:49. > :28:00.worked hard against the Hungarians. They have been in that position a
:28:01. > :28:04.couple of times. They do have a point ahead of the Hungarians, but
:28:05. > :28:16.if Hungary are able to win here, they go a point ahead of Greece. We
:28:17. > :28:18.will see how this table shakes out. This is a moment for Greece in this
:28:19. > :28:40.tournament. The clock is counting. Greece are
:28:41. > :28:47.trying to get closer than they are being allowed by the Hungarians.
:28:48. > :28:52.They can't lose possession. They need to get at least a chance to
:28:53. > :29:01.level it. It will be difficult now for Hungary to counter respond. The
:29:02. > :29:10.build continues from Greece. They still have possession. A shot! Is it
:29:11. > :29:14.going to be allowed? The question still remains in the hands of the
:29:15. > :29:22.officials. They do credit it. The eighth goal is going to go to
:29:23. > :29:32.Greece, and the shot was outstanding delivery. Hungary have five seconds
:29:33. > :29:41.now. You can hardly believe it. Nagy thought he had it, but the angle of
:29:42. > :29:47.his hand just tipped back slightly. It is not going to be Genidounias.
:29:48. > :29:57.It will be a strike from the heart of their number 12. It is
:29:58. > :30:13.Vlachopoulos who gets credit for this goal. You see how quick he was.
:30:14. > :30:15.He proves himself the talisman, as he has been so far in this
:30:16. > :30:25.tournament for Greece. What can be of the remaining
:30:26. > :30:32.seconds? Wait for the clock to start. Underway. It will be taken by
:30:33. > :30:39.Flegkas and they will finish as a draw. Inside the Maria Lenk aquatics
:30:40. > :30:45.centre in this preliminary match and how about that. Greece will take
:30:46. > :30:49.that very nicely indeed. They thought they would be giving up all
:30:50. > :30:58.the points, they end up splitting them. They need to be careful here.
:30:59. > :31:04.Emotions are high. That is the way it will finish at half-time. Greece
:31:05. > :31:07.and Hungary with eight apiece and it still isn't quite done as both of
:31:08. > :31:14.these teams are still in the water and a very close to each other. They
:31:15. > :31:17.will now shake hands and let's cool -- let cooler heads prevail. An
:31:18. > :31:23.emotional finish in this matchup. You have to feel Hungary will be
:31:24. > :31:31.frustrated, that they didn't get the return they said desperately wanted.
:31:32. > :31:36.STUDIO: Pleasantries being exchanged with a bit of tension at the Maria
:31:37. > :31:41.Lenk aquatics centre. We have seen some great water polo matches on BBC
:31:42. > :31:48.Four. I don't think we have yet brought you a victory for any team.
:31:49. > :31:57.The greatest water polo nation of all time, in the Olympics, Hungary.
:31:58. > :32:03.8-8 in the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.
:32:04. > :32:09.Weather update, it is that fine rain, the one that soaps you
:32:10. > :32:13.through. Quite a lot of people heading out of the arena where the
:32:14. > :32:17.handball happens and they are making their way up the Olympic way and as
:32:18. > :32:22.you continue down the Olympic way, you curve around, is quickly road,
:32:23. > :32:30.and you find a way to the carry car arenas and we will head into carry
:32:31. > :32:34.ocarina number two. Some judo. Some interest in the British women's
:32:35. > :32:47.category. We are joining the sun at the start
:32:48. > :33:03.of the bell. Ollie Williams is our commentator.
:33:04. > :33:09.The women's 70 kilo judo contest and Sally Conway making her first
:33:10. > :33:13.appearance at Rio 2016. When she left the UK at the end of July, she
:33:14. > :33:22.said she couldn't wait to fight, she felt good and she was ready. We are
:33:23. > :33:35.about to find out how ready. She is facing Houda Miled, one of judo's
:33:36. > :33:43.best. Conway has to watch out for penalties. They have been a real
:33:44. > :33:47.problem so far in Rio. Several times, the Brits have gone out on
:33:48. > :33:57.penalties only. I wonder how Conway will approach this today. Wendy's
:33:58. > :34:06.two did meet last time, it was a very close contest but one that
:34:07. > :34:15.Houda Miled had the better off throughout. She started better,
:34:16. > :34:22.Conway. That is it. Sally Conway not hanging around at all. Awarded the
:34:23. > :34:31.Ippon was less than a minute gone. Sally Conway proving it can be done
:34:32. > :34:36.for British judo. She gave Houda Miled, the 29-year-old from Tunisia,
:34:37. > :34:40.absolutely no chance in her opening fight and she is through to the
:34:41. > :34:43.round of 16 with barely a minute gone and barely any sweat on her
:34:44. > :34:56.brow. Fantastic start for Sally Conway.

:35:45. > :35:48.happening. I told you at the start of the programme, we would do a lot
:35:49. > :35:54.of Rugby Sevens because Great Britain's men are in action. Coming
:35:55. > :35:58.to the end of their pool stages. First, let's talk about group B
:35:59. > :36:04.because a really interesting competition unveiling in this one.
:36:05. > :36:05.France topping the group as it stands right now after their first
:36:06. > :36:18.few games. We will see the Commonwealth
:36:19. > :36:22.champion South Africa taking on Australia now. This one is really
:36:23. > :36:29.tight, they are looking for a third best place, Australia. Let's head
:36:30. > :36:33.over to the Deodoro Stadium right now and see South Africa take on
:36:34. > :36:44.Australia. COMMENTATOR: Absolute must win game
:36:45. > :36:50.for Australia. South Africa not in spring Brock green but in white
:36:51. > :36:57.shirts. Australia in gold and green. -- Springbok green. An error against
:36:58. > :37:04.South Africa, haven't seen too many of those. Looking forward to this
:37:05. > :37:08.one. Cecil Afrika is normally the restart came for the South African
:37:09. > :37:11.team, he is on the bench to start with and a big mistake to give
:37:12. > :37:38.Australia a free play. A game full of errors to begin with.
:37:39. > :37:42.South Africa not quite top seeds, that is Fiji, but they are in top
:37:43. > :37:47.form. Australia in anything but top form yesterday. The defence referee
:37:48. > :38:10.did not agree with that decision. South Africa with big Dylan Sage on
:38:11. > :38:15.the wing. It is coming his way and here he goes. Not one of his
:38:16. > :38:23.characteristic charges. Agaba brought into the forward, cannot
:38:24. > :38:28.quite take that. Gabba will be very disappointed with that. They wanted
:38:29. > :38:29.to release this man out wide and a very nervous start from both sides.
:38:30. > :38:44.Which is surprising. South Africa want to try to keep the
:38:45. > :38:53.momentum going into the quarterfinals. Con Foley gets
:38:54. > :38:59.underway. Here goes Henry Hutchinson. South African tackle is
:39:00. > :39:06.as ferocious as anything in this competition. Australia in possession
:39:07. > :39:17.though. We cycled quickly. Stannard. Cameron Clark. It is high tackled by
:39:18. > :39:26.Dylan Sage. Advantage being played. Jason Parahi feels the South African
:39:27. > :39:30.tackling. Good chase. Sage gets back. It is therefore Clark, he
:39:31. > :39:41.tries the hand off, penalty to Australia. Good hand off. Jason
:39:42. > :39:48.Parahi scores. This is more like it, the Australia we thought we would
:39:49. > :39:52.see. A wonderful try. The speed of the ball from the contact area.
:39:53. > :39:58.Australia have been technically sound. The first time the referee
:39:59. > :40:06.let the ball play on. Wonderful step and wonderful footwork by Jesse
:40:07. > :40:15.Parahi. Australia is, surprise loss yesterday to France. South Africa
:40:16. > :40:21.have to get their a game going. They took a risk. They parked their stars
:40:22. > :40:28.on the bench to begin with. Cecil Afrika who really is the heartbeat
:40:29. > :40:33.of the team, not on the field yet. Kyle Brown, the captain, so good
:40:34. > :40:40.yesterday. They started with a strong bench. Never assume anything
:40:41. > :40:44.of this seven aside game, especially against Australia, who really have
:40:45. > :40:47.to win this game. That was a wonderful try, all based on the
:40:48. > :40:55.speed of the ball in the contact area. James Stannard gets play
:40:56. > :41:00.underway. Straight in action again. That time, couldn't quite get the
:41:01. > :41:07.pass away, otherwise, South Africa were looking in trouble. The ball is
:41:08. > :41:17.out of play. Justin Geduld takes his time. You feel the South African is
:41:18. > :41:21.not quite right, not quite into the game at the moment. Maybe it is
:41:22. > :41:28.because they made the changes, I don't know. If South Africa had a
:41:29. > :41:36.weak spot yesterday, it was here at the line-out. The throw to Tim Agaba
:41:37. > :41:42.again not straight. One of the great things about Rugby Sevens, players
:41:43. > :41:47.have all the skills, you have backs, the scrum, forwards playing at the
:41:48. > :41:52.back and that is the great thing about it. A strong victory there and
:41:53. > :41:57.that was a Cardinal error to give the ball away so easily. In your
:41:58. > :42:06.line-out, possession is everything in this Sevens rugby game.
:42:07. > :42:16.Jesse Parahi, he is off the field. This is Henry Hutchinson. Hutchison
:42:17. > :42:24.takes it to them. The speed of the ball is brilliant. Long passes. This
:42:25. > :42:31.is Tom Cusack in action. Stannard sending them this way through. Con
:42:32. > :42:43.Foley. Coming the way Stannard, though. Here is Stannard. Long.
:42:44. > :42:48.Hutchison. Foot in touch? No, play on. One quick pass and Australia are
:42:49. > :42:58.over for their second try. Tom Cusack, the scorer. Great tried by
:42:59. > :43:03.Australia. Tom Cusack, number 12. Look at the speed again. Young Henry
:43:04. > :43:08.Hutchison, just 19 years old. Look how quickly the ball comes back.
:43:09. > :43:15.That is where you win games in Sevens. The speed of the ball in the
:43:16. > :43:20.contact area. Daniel power, the coach, will be looking at that bench
:43:21. > :43:33.very quickly. De Jonge is now coming on. James Stannard's version misses.
:43:34. > :43:37.Australia 12 points to the good against mighty South Africa. Dylan
:43:38. > :43:50.Sage has gone off with a blood injury. Just a Nick to his head.
:43:51. > :43:56.South Africa have been blown away by Australia in the first few minutes.
:43:57. > :44:06.This is more like it, they have sent for the big four, Kwagga Smith.
:44:07. > :44:10.Philip Snyman stop Tim Agaba as the half-time hooter goes. Can South
:44:11. > :44:16.Africa strike back? Here is De Jonge.
:44:17. > :44:39.Play on until hands in the ruck by Con Foley. De Jonge coming over. One
:44:40. > :44:46.of the team leaders left on the bench to begin with. Sent on to
:44:47. > :44:59.restore some order. Australia are 12 points ahead. Speckman. Tim Agaba, a
:45:00. > :45:12.chance now, although he has gone hard in the midfield.
:45:13. > :45:24.The half-time whistle goes. And it is an upset on the cards. The game
:45:25. > :45:38.is not over, but Australia lead South Africa 12-0. The game before
:45:39. > :45:41.had the heartbeat of the French team. And I think Cecil Afrika is
:45:42. > :45:51.the heartbeat of the South African team. I thought it was amazing to
:45:52. > :45:57.start with him on the bench, but Daniel Powell clearly knows what he
:45:58. > :46:07.is doing. This throws things wide open now. Well, it does and doesn't.
:46:08. > :46:11.Australia and South Africa should qualify, it's just the pecking order
:46:12. > :46:24.of who you are playing next. That was what I meant. Look how quick the
:46:25. > :46:31.ball comes back. Australia have hardly been penalised for the whole
:46:32. > :46:34.game. That is why they lead South Africa. Technically, they have been
:46:35. > :46:39.better than the Southern Africans. This is the coach. I would love to
:46:40. > :46:49.hear what they are saying in these huddles. You might have to speak
:46:50. > :47:02.Afrikaans. He looks calm and collected. The runners-up in this
:47:03. > :47:08.pool will play the runners-up in Great Britain's pool. So imagine
:47:09. > :47:13.Great Britain, having lost to New Zealand, should that ever happen, as
:47:14. > :47:20.if! They might have to play South Africa. If Britain beat New Zealand,
:47:21. > :47:29.that is to come, 12:30pm local time, 4:30pm back home. Stannard has had a
:47:30. > :47:31.much better game. His kick-offs have been spot-on so far. James Stannard
:47:32. > :47:54.starts for Australia. Another mistake. You can see as soon
:47:55. > :47:58.as Justin Geduld makes the mistake, all of Australia are high-fiving
:47:59. > :48:06.each other. They know that is a big moment. It is those little errors
:48:07. > :48:08.that we didn't see yesterday from the South African team. They have
:48:09. > :48:23.given a lot of possession to Australia. That is why Australia
:48:24. > :48:40.lead. Penalty. At the scrummage. That is an unusual one.
:48:41. > :49:21.The referee thought about the penalty and decided instead to give
:49:22. > :49:30.Australia the scrummage. They will be perfectly happy with that.
:49:31. > :49:42.Wonderful tackle by De Jong -- de Jongh. He is one of the stars of the
:49:43. > :49:46.15 aside South African team. But Australia have brought their A going
:49:47. > :49:50.to this match. Certainly, the physicality and the speed of the
:49:51. > :49:56.ball is blowing South Africa away. South Africa are now making the
:49:57. > :50:10.changes. But Cecil Afrika is still on the bench.
:50:11. > :50:17.Fa'alava'au is on Fraustro earlier. Australia are very busy, very
:50:18. > :50:23.vigorous and almost unrecognisable from yesterday. Relief for South
:50:24. > :50:51.Africa. The penalty goes their way. A stern word from the referee. A few
:50:52. > :50:59.drops of rain falling on their Deodoro Stadium. We didn't come to
:51:00. > :51:04.Rio for rain, Clive! Stannard is just introducing himself to Kyle
:51:05. > :51:16.Brown, the captain. It is a tough game, this. There have been no major
:51:17. > :51:40.incidents so far. On comes Werner Kok. Roscko Speckman to throw.
:51:41. > :52:20.And final pass, Roscko is over. It is Seabelo Senatla on the end of the
:52:21. > :52:24.movement. Good hand by South Africa. I am just looking at the clock now.
:52:25. > :52:40.Three minutes, that is a long time in rugby sevens.
:52:41. > :52:53.Senatla is a leading try scorer in South Africa. It has missed. So
:52:54. > :52:57.South Africa have to score a converted try to draw level with
:52:58. > :53:03.Australia. It is to advantage Australia, but there are a couple of
:53:04. > :53:06.minutes left for South Africa to restore their credentials as the
:53:07. > :53:38.number two seeds here. Fa'alava'au is away. South Africa
:53:39. > :53:57.out of sorts in defence as well as out of rhythm in attack.
:53:58. > :54:05.We will now see how good this Australian defence is. The referee
:54:06. > :54:30.helped them then because they had three Australians on the floor.
:54:31. > :55:00.Time off. On comes the young number 11, who was one of the star players
:55:01. > :55:05.yesterday. Stannard, so strong, fighting with the big South African
:55:06. > :55:08.forward. It looks like he has a cut on the head. They will be looking at
:55:09. > :55:18.the clock now. They will have practised this. Stannard comes off a
:55:19. > :55:23.few stitches required. Dylan Sage, who went off during the first half
:55:24. > :55:28.with an injury, is back on. But Stannard, to loud applause, goes
:55:29. > :55:35.off. The team will have practised this. How can we run down 35
:55:36. > :55:45.seconds? With a big kick to touch to begin with. Quite simply, a big
:55:46. > :55:46.zero. If Australia can win their own ball and just throw now, it should
:55:47. > :56:12.be their game. Big moment, this. Pinched by South Africa, stolen back
:56:13. > :56:20.by Australia. Well, this has thrown it all open again, Clive. It is
:56:21. > :56:24.totally open. The South Africans will have one play now. The hooter
:56:25. > :56:37.has just gone, so they will have one free play now for the scrum.
:56:38. > :56:42.Australia have got to defend. An accidental poke in the eye for
:56:43. > :56:52.Roscko Speckman. That will be watering. And it was a nasty cut for
:56:53. > :57:03.Stannard. He is sitting in the tunnel. They haven't started
:57:04. > :57:13.stitching him up yet. South Africa have to score and convert to bring
:57:14. > :57:18.the scores level. It's all over. You can see what that means to the
:57:19. > :57:25.Australians. Cheslin Kolbe E has given away the penalty. Australia
:57:26. > :57:36.can kick the ball. It shouldn't be a surprise. Big moment in the
:57:37. > :57:44.tournament and has thrown the group wide open. It has indeed. South
:57:45. > :57:49.Africa's advantage lies in their points difference, but they have
:57:50. > :57:57.lost to Australia. So in this group, we have three teams on two victories
:57:58. > :58:01.each. Congratulations. A lot of people
:58:02. > :58:05.here didn't expect that result. How confident were you beforehand? We
:58:06. > :58:09.made a few mistakes yesterday. The good thing about sevens is that you
:58:10. > :58:12.get another chance the next day. We built on the last performance of the
:58:13. > :58:17.day yesterday and went in confident this morning. Barring ridiculous
:58:18. > :58:24.mathematical results, you're going through to the quarterfinals, where
:58:25. > :58:28.you will probably play Fiji. How do you view that? Fiji go in as the top
:58:29. > :58:33.dogs. They won the World Series this year. We know what they do and how
:58:34. > :58:37.to stop them, and we will give it a good crack. Give us an Aussie
:58:38. > :58:41.assessment of what the competition has been like? It has been bloody
:58:42. > :58:46.great, mate. There have been a lot of upsets. Japan beat New Zealand
:58:47. > :58:51.yesterday. That stuff happens in sevens. It has been an awesome
:58:52. > :58:53.spectacle. Good luck in the quarters.
:58:54. > :58:58.John Inverdale, asking the questions after a good match between Australia
:58:59. > :59:01.and South Africa. And as you can see, he has changed location from
:59:02. > :59:07.the Lagoa Stadium down at Copacabana and the rowing to the Deodoro
:59:08. > :59:10.Stadium. John, it is a good swap that you have made because after the
:59:11. > :59:14.last couple of days, we have seen the men's tournament that is
:59:15. > :59:19.showcasing competitive rugby sevens at its best. Absolutely, and it is
:59:20. > :59:24.rugby weather because it is grey overhead and a bit damp underfoot
:59:25. > :59:28.because of the rain we have had. I had to walk about two miles to get
:59:29. > :59:32.here to the stadium, because that was where I got dropped off by the
:59:33. > :59:36.taxi, and there are thousands of people queueing to get into the
:59:37. > :59:41.Deodoro Stadium and other venues. That problem has still not been
:59:42. > :59:44.confronted. As a consequence of the game you have just seen, South
:59:45. > :59:50.Africa top that group. France were second and Australia third. The
:59:51. > :59:57.likelihood is that they will play Fiji in the last eight later today.
:59:58. > :59:59.Behind me now, the teams are on the field, Kenya against Japan. The
:00:00. > :00:03.result of this match will have a bearing on who Great Britain might
:00:04. > :00:07.be playing in the quarterfinals later as well. There is a
:00:08. > :00:11.possibility of three teams ending up with two wins each in this group.
:00:12. > :00:18.Let's go to Clive Woodward and Eddie Butler.
