:00:00. > :00:11.Tom Mitchell is the captain, Phil Burgess in the scrum cap, Daniel
:00:12. > :00:18.Bibby will lead operations from the middle of the field. Mitchell sizes
:00:19. > :00:22.up the little hole they are looking for and James Rodwell goes up for it
:00:23. > :00:26.and get it down to Dan Bailey it does not matter it does not go
:00:27. > :00:31.immediately to Mitchell -- Daniel Bibby.
:00:32. > :00:40.It matters that Tom Mitchell can't find Dan Norton. A wonderful start
:00:41. > :00:44.from Mitchell, a great kick. Rodwell wins the ball, and gives Team GB
:00:45. > :00:49.initial possession, but unfortunately it's a poor pass from
:00:50. > :00:57.Mitchell, giving Argentina the first line-out. These forwards are so
:00:58. > :01:04.impressive in Argentina. Axel Muller Aranda Wynne said. James Davis of
:01:05. > :01:18.Wales wins the first tackle. -- wins it. A slight eye of the ball.
:01:19. > :01:33.All of the noises from the Argentina end. Alex Ruiz of France is the
:01:34. > :01:44.referee. Argentina go down the line, into the 22. Argentina playing
:01:45. > :01:55.downwind. It is raining, it is windy, it is noisy.
:01:56. > :02:01.Rodwell challenges, delays possession, and Team GB have the
:02:02. > :02:10.13th. Excellent work, from Rodwell. It is a free kick, Rodwell going
:02:11. > :02:18.head to head and doing very well to secure possession. James Davis, over
:02:19. > :02:26.the ball, both quarterfinals so far have ended 12-7. This is the sort of
:02:27. > :02:34.set routine for Britain, Mitchell just looks around.
:02:35. > :02:43.Dan Bibby suddenly brings the game alive. Mitchell looks up.
:02:44. > :02:52.It's one for Dan Norton to chase... He closes in. Franco Sabato, that
:02:53. > :02:55.worked well, territory made and the first look at the raw pace of Dan
:02:56. > :03:03.Norton, tactically brilliant from Mitchell. Keeping it in a field,
:03:04. > :03:09.with the Argentinians, everybody having to turn. Team GB win the
:03:10. > :03:13.ball. Most importantly in the Argentina half, tactically got to
:03:14. > :03:24.play key conditions, that was excellent from Mitchell, excellent.
:03:25. > :03:32.Tom Mitchell with the throw. Rodwell calls it, and wins it.
:03:33. > :03:39.Back to Mitchell. Bibby. A knock-on by Mitchell. That was unfortunate.
:03:40. > :03:46.In the previous game, France tactically played the conditions
:03:47. > :03:50.properly -- did not tactically play. Team GB were tactically correct but
:03:51. > :03:56.you cannot force a pass, especially when it is wet, these are two really
:03:57. > :03:58.well matched up forwards, Burgess, Rodwell, Davis, against Luna,
:03:59. > :04:24.Alvarez and Muller. Bautista Ezcurra. This is big, Alex
:04:25. > :04:33.Neil. -- Axel Muller around. Tom Mitchell has to go fast against
:04:34. > :04:37.Muller. The referee right there. Rodwell arrives, plays the
:04:38. > :04:42.scrum-half and that is fantastic defensive work, so close to the
:04:43. > :04:50.line. Davis plays scrum-half, Burgess with a clearing kick.
:04:51. > :05:04.Support from Alvarez. It's a penalty for Argentina. Very
:05:05. > :05:07.slow getting back from that kick, excellent by Burgess, relieving the
:05:08. > :05:21.pressure. It is a different game in the wet, the winter... -- the wind.
:05:22. > :05:28.Organising his players, Bautista Ezcurra has the ball now. Challenged
:05:29. > :05:34.by Fernando Luna, one of the big forwards. Gaston Revol, and it's
:05:35. > :05:39.Alvar rose again, and it goes loose. The ball goes out of play --
:05:40. > :05:46.Alvarez. You can see the first racial and
:05:47. > :05:51.there. Mark Robertson, sorry, Mark Bennett. Just annoyed with himself
:05:52. > :05:57.-- frustration. Then it had a wonderful Olympic
:05:58. > :06:01.Games. Excellent in the Centre for Team GB. He kicks the ball to stay
:06:02. > :06:05.in play, it drifts up to give Argentina the ball again for the
:06:06. > :06:09.line-out. More possession for Argentina. Bautista Ezcurra slips,
:06:10. > :06:29.turns and goes back the other way. Read all, what speed have they got?
:06:30. > :06:36.Norton closes in again. Recycled by Argentina. -- Revol. Burgess has to
:06:37. > :06:42.win the tackle but the ball goes loose. Keeping it tight, Luna for
:06:43. > :06:45.the line, held. James Davis holding with the ball.
:06:46. > :06:52.James Davis does it again with that turnover, the penalty.
:06:53. > :06:57.WHISTLE It's a penalty to Team GB. Just four
:06:58. > :07:01.seconds they looked isolated for their, Phil Burgess puts the ball
:07:02. > :07:05.back on the ground. Everybody, take a breather. Just out
:07:06. > :07:11.of shot, James Ward well is limping off the field.
:07:12. > :07:16.-- James Rodwell. This is Argentine frustration. James Davis, take a
:07:17. > :07:20.bow, what a magnificent turnover. The ball went loose, sometimes that
:07:21. > :07:24.is dangerous but Argentina got the ball, the big forward Luna takes it
:07:25. > :07:32.forward as Rodwell comes off, Sam Cross comes on. But what a turnover
:07:33. > :07:35.for Davis, that was amazing. And absolutely try saving... Good work
:07:36. > :07:42.from the brilliant Welshman, Davies. Sam Cross, Tom Mitchell, booting the
:07:43. > :07:50.ball off the park. It is 0-0 at half-time. Great
:07:51. > :07:54.Britain have the wind behind them in the second half. It's the first time
:07:55. > :08:03.a 0-0 situation after seven minutes, it shows the conditions for two very
:08:04. > :08:06.evenly matched teams, Team GB were on their own goal-line.
:08:07. > :08:11.In the second half, we have some wind behind us, we can play a
:08:12. > :08:18.territory game. This is going to go to the wire, tactically Team GB did
:08:19. > :08:30.well, defended well. Very evenly matched. Goalless at half-time, it's
:08:31. > :08:36.a low scoring affair because of the tension, pressure, tackling and
:08:37. > :08:56.because of the rain. Mitchell has been a real star here today.
:08:57. > :09:03.In this weather, have a think about these off-loads. Goalless, that's an
:09:04. > :09:08.amazing achievement. The attack has been really clean, breakdown, feed
:09:09. > :09:23.them... The half-time talks are animated. Simon Amor mentioning the
:09:24. > :09:27.wind. Use it! Only two minutes at half-time. Here is James Rodwell.
:09:28. > :09:34.That does not look too bad, does it? It may not be the end of his Olympic
:09:35. > :09:39.tournament yet. This is pressure, Eddie, I cannot value how big a deal
:09:40. > :09:45.basis for both sides. Seven minutes away from the semifinal, and the
:09:46. > :09:49.Olympic sevens. -- a medal for the Olympic sevens. They are an evenly
:09:50. > :09:53.matched team, the team who can make the least errors in the seven
:09:54. > :09:58.minutes of rugby. Team GB have an advantage with the wind behind them.
:09:59. > :10:06.It's a very wet evening. Gaston Revol will be looking to put Muller
:10:07. > :10:15.under this cake. Or is it Alvarez? Luna... -- kick.
:10:16. > :10:22.The two Welshman working well together, Sam Cross and James Davis.
:10:23. > :10:29.Mark Bennett comes in, Burgess to Mitchell. Bibby switches. He runs
:10:30. > :10:34.hard, Burgess is back in support. Bibby has to go in and tries to dig
:10:35. > :10:42.it out. It's a penalty against Team GB, a bit slow. Hanging on,
:10:43. > :10:47.Argentina awarded the penalty. Every penalty, every contact is critical.
:10:48. > :10:51.Team GB have to be clinical, absolutely thinking about every
:10:52. > :10:57.ruck. They had to stay onside with the referee, from France, that was
:10:58. > :11:04.great from Bibby. He has had a wonderful tournament
:11:05. > :11:10.too. Yes committee has just given Burgess won, not rolling away quick
:11:11. > :11:14.enough, it is tough and there. But Argentina do the right thing, taking
:11:15. > :11:18.the territory. -- it is tough out there. Revol to throw, out goes
:11:19. > :11:29.Muller. Franco Sabato waits on the near
:11:30. > :11:36.side. Revol under pressure from Davies.
:11:37. > :11:42.James Davis looks to shadow the past. Knock-on from Argentina, a
:11:43. > :11:46.good and offensive operation. Great difference from Team GB. Argentina
:11:47. > :11:54.hit in the short side, you have to keep the ball in hand, no 50-50
:11:55. > :12:01.passes. A great hit, I think it was Davis and Burgess. I had to say, I
:12:02. > :12:08.was really impressed with the British forward, Sam Cross comes on
:12:09. > :12:11.and plays as well as Rodwell and Burgess, really handling the big
:12:12. > :12:15.three Argentina boys very well so far.
:12:16. > :12:27.Tom Mitchell finds Bibby. Pace from Mark Bennett. And a
:12:28. > :12:36.sidestep, Dan Norton comes in, it goes loose. It is a penalty to
:12:37. > :12:41.Britain. A key decision, Muller giving away a penalty. This gives
:12:42. > :12:45.the opportunity for Mitchell to hit the ball long downfield, take the
:12:46. > :12:57.line-out. Or, they may have a set play. Set play is what it's going to
:12:58. > :13:00.be. James Davis, over the ball. Watchhouse I Argentina come up, they
:13:01. > :13:11.are walking up, they won't be pulled up -- James Davies. Team GB will be
:13:12. > :13:19.waiting for Argentina. This is amazing, Tom Mitchell... To
:13:20. > :13:23.Bibby. Now there's a possibility... Burgess
:13:24. > :13:31.knows, there is Davis outside of him. James Davies cannot quite keep
:13:32. > :13:39.his balance, keeping the ball in play. Forward and Phil Burgess
:13:40. > :13:45.arrives. Went forward so close. The big man. Davies here, wonderful
:13:46. > :13:52.friend, she just thought he would make it, he loses his balance...
:13:53. > :13:56.-- he just thought. Giving the Argentinian player time to get back.
:13:57. > :14:02.Alvarez takes him down, but a wonderful run from him. A little
:14:03. > :14:09.finger to put back in place. Most importantly... Just 15 metres out
:14:10. > :14:13.from the Argentina line. They have to get the length back. Three
:14:14. > :14:22.minutes to go. Davis does so well, great camera work. The set play
:14:23. > :14:29.worked well, got in behind Argentina and most importantly... We are in
:14:30. > :14:41.their half of the field. What pressure can be exerted here? Quite
:14:42. > :14:44.a lot... Good pressure, and it goes forward.
:14:45. > :14:49.These little moments, these tiny margins, and it was all about the
:14:50. > :14:55.fundamentals. Nothing more complicated than just push
:14:56. > :15:01.everybody. These are big moments, these are huge, that was a huge
:15:02. > :15:05.turnover for the team. Tom Mitchell forces the knock-on at the end,
:15:06. > :15:12.people like Phil Burgess getting the congratulations, the donkey work.
:15:13. > :15:20.Safely in possession, Bibby on his own committee get it back. Mitchell
:15:21. > :15:25.is with him and now Matt Bennett, Dan Norton outside him, Dan Norton
:15:26. > :15:27.for the corner to cut inside one, head high tackle, can he reach? Not
:15:28. > :15:42.quite. Penalty given very early. I have to say, he stopped Norton in
:15:43. > :15:54.his tracks, that was a yellow card to me. They have been penalising
:15:55. > :15:59.those. They don't want to be so close to the line because Argentina
:16:00. > :16:06.have to be ten metres away. The penalty only five metres out. Daniel
:16:07. > :16:13.Bibby. Slow, slow, quick. It has not worked. Was there an obstruction on
:16:14. > :16:20.Bibby? They are going to have a look at it. It was a big call and that is
:16:21. > :16:32.a high tackle. They gave the penalty for that one. It was a yellow card
:16:33. > :16:40.as well. Steady, Clive. They are just checking the tap down. Downward
:16:41. > :16:44.pressure and it is a 22 drop out. If I was Argentina I would be kicking
:16:45. > :16:51.this as far as I downfield. They have to get out of their 22. Team GB
:16:52. > :16:55.have two sweepers back. They are waiting the kick. Juan Imhoff is on
:16:56. > :17:11.to the wing. It has gone long. Tom Mitchell and
:17:12. > :17:16.Mark Bennett are back. I'm surprised they didn't drop a bit further, it
:17:17. > :17:19.was obviously going to go long and they have allowed Argentina
:17:20. > :17:26.territory. Bennett has spilt it and Argentina have knocked it on. It
:17:27. > :17:35.will be scrum down Argentina. That is a penalty. And that could be
:17:36. > :17:39.yellow. Phil Burgess the victim. That is a definite yellow card.
:17:40. > :17:42.Judging by what has happened so far in this tournament. We should be
:17:43. > :18:06.able to hear this. Juan Imhoff the culprit. It is a big
:18:07. > :18:09.call in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games. It looks like a
:18:10. > :18:23.yellow. Juan Imhoff into the bin for two
:18:24. > :18:27.minutes and he will not be back and Great Britain will play against six
:18:28. > :18:32.for what is left of this game. Just 40 seconds on the clock, a long way
:18:33. > :18:39.to go, they are wind assisted but it is a long way from here down the
:18:40. > :18:50.other end. 0-0 the score, who would have thought it? Tom Mitchell. 14
:18:51. > :19:00.Dan Norton to chase, chase, long, long, long. Sam Cross in pursuit.
:19:01. > :19:02.Here comes Norton on Revol. Great tackle, cross arrives, they are
:19:03. > :19:11.trying to hold the Argentine player up. High tackle. Argentina take it
:19:12. > :19:19.quickly but they are down to six. This is their kick and chase. Mark
:19:20. > :19:24.Bennett, it's not it Tom Mitchell. He need support and he throws it
:19:25. > :19:28.back with and this is Mark Bennett. Daniel Bibby is within it has gone
:19:29. > :19:34.loose. Burgess has to get it and he does. He takes the tackle and sets
:19:35. > :19:37.up the ball. Penalty to Great Britain. Argentine discipline just
:19:38. > :19:47.slipping a little bit. We are back in the Great Britain 22
:19:48. > :19:55.and just looking at that scoreboard, 0-0. Norton. Bibby on the burst and
:19:56. > :19:59.it has gone forward will stop high tackle by James Davis, penalty. They
:20:00. > :20:10.could just kick for goal here. We are going to have another
:20:11. > :20:25.consultation. There is no doubt that if Argentina
:20:26. > :20:29.get this penalty they will kick at goal. This is a huge call. James
:20:30. > :20:49.Davis is going into the bin. And penalty awarded. Argentina are
:20:50. > :20:53.going to do what? Guest on Revol -- Gaston Revol, and they are going to
:20:54. > :20:58.kick for goal. It is to be a drop kick, no kicks off the floor in
:20:59. > :21:06.seven aside so this is it, to put his team in the semifinal.
:21:07. > :21:23.It has missed. Time is up. 0-0 and we now go into sudden death. And
:21:24. > :21:28.that means that the teams play in five-minute intervals and the first
:21:29. > :21:35.team to score goes through. It has stopped raining.
:21:36. > :21:43.Real tension here and I have to say that Team GB played at half
:21:44. > :21:48.tactically very well. The key man here has been the referee. To be
:21:49. > :21:52.fair, yet not bottled it. I think both players deserved to go in the
:21:53. > :21:58.bin and he got those decisions right. Argentina had a drop goal to
:21:59. > :22:03.put them into the semifinal. It will be six against six. Juan Imhoff will
:22:04. > :22:10.not reappear I said earlier but he might now. Five minutes each way,
:22:11. > :22:19.they could be back to seven before the game is over. And whoever kicks
:22:20. > :22:26.off, that is crucial. 0-0 in the quarterfinals of the Olympic sevens.
:22:27. > :22:31.I thought it was a well matched game, Argentina have been excellent
:22:32. > :22:36.and Team GB really excellent and it is tactically who can keep the ball
:22:37. > :22:40.and sync correctly under pressure. This is where you need real
:22:41. > :22:48.leadership and I am hoping Mitchell has got the edge in that area. The
:22:49. > :22:52.referee wants Britain to hurry up. Interesting to see what six they
:22:53. > :22:56.start with. Sam Cross was on for James Rodwell through injury. But
:22:57. > :23:11.they kept the same players on. And it looks as if those same
:23:12. > :23:18.players are going to see at least the start of the game. James Rodwell
:23:19. > :23:24.is back on the field. Sam Cross goes off. They have got their starting
:23:25. > :23:34.seven without Davis. What a restart for Mitchell, looking for Rodwell.
:23:35. > :23:38.Rodwell chases. Up goes the new player for Argentina, Juan Pablo
:23:39. > :23:46.Estelles. Argentina in possession. Yes Maroney, they kick downfield. --
:23:47. > :23:54.Matias Moroni. Tactically absolutely right, put the chase on, pin Team GB
:23:55. > :24:05.back in their own half. Mitchell to Bibby. It has gone loose again. Mark
:24:06. > :24:16.Bennett sorts out and beat one, beat two. Dan Norton. There is a chase on
:24:17. > :24:21.and it is Tom Mitchell flying back. Estelles for Argentina, Mitchell let
:24:22. > :24:28.him get up and now puts him down. What is that for? A high tackle?
:24:29. > :24:36.In what is back on the field. Great kick from Norton, tactically spot
:24:37. > :24:40.on, they have just got to think at the contact and understand what the
:24:41. > :24:48.referee is doing. That is a needless penalty. Argentina clear from their
:24:49. > :24:58.22. GB question if that was taken back in. These are big decisions
:24:59. > :25:02.from the officials. Again, Argentina taking the ball out when it should
:25:03. > :25:11.have stayed in. Marcus Watson coming on for Bennett. He can add some gas
:25:12. > :25:19.to the team. That is Alex Muller in the line-out. The referee wants
:25:20. > :25:25.Britain to hurry up. Phil Burgess and James Rodwell in the line-out.
:25:26. > :25:29.James Davis is back on the field, that is why Britain were delaying,
:25:30. > :25:36.they wanted their full quota back and it is seven against seven again.
:25:37. > :25:43.Mitchell needs to keep everybody calm. Just win the ball. What will
:25:44. > :25:54.throws in the Mitchell takes it down. Bibby. Marcus Watson. Watson
:25:55. > :25:57.presents for Bibby, penalty advantage to Bibby, Mitchell dances
:25:58. > :26:02.inside one tackle. He finds Rodwell on the outside and he heads for a
:26:03. > :26:15.little bit of security. Another penalty. Mitchell, Burgess, Watson,
:26:16. > :26:24.Norton outside him, Watson. He can get to ground. Penalty to Britain.
:26:25. > :26:31.What do they do? Golden point, first to score wins the tie. What do they
:26:32. > :26:41.do? I would say drop the goal. Go for it. Mitchell is a great kick of
:26:42. > :26:45.the ball. He is going for it. Argentina had their chance and this
:26:46. > :26:52.is Mitchell's. Marcus Watson has done well since coming on. To say
:26:53. > :26:56.this is a big kick is the understatement of the last couple of
:26:57. > :27:10.days. What a moment for Mitchell. 0-0. Tom Mitchell to win the game
:27:11. > :27:16.with the first points. It hits the post! It has gone forward off
:27:17. > :27:23.Argentina. Great Britain get the scrum! My goodness, what drama! What
:27:24. > :27:29.drama. You could not make this up. The good news is that Team GB get
:27:30. > :27:33.the feed and possession, only 20 yards out. He hits the post to put
:27:34. > :27:41.his team into the Olympic semifinals. I think Team GB have got
:27:42. > :27:48.their guns and seven on the field now. Come on, guys, let's put this
:27:49. > :27:55.away. Mitchell feeds, he finds Bibby with a bit of a bounce. Bibby on the
:27:56. > :28:05.outside, not outside him! And the try! That puts Great Britain into
:28:06. > :28:13.the semifinals! The referee blows for full-time and GB are into the
:28:14. > :28:23.last four. The first try, the sudden death points, the golden goal. Great
:28:24. > :28:28.Britain 5-0 Argentina. Wow, wow, wow. Look at the emotion on those
:28:29. > :28:34.faces. Bibby has been outstanding and you just felt that if he could
:28:35. > :28:40.get the outside and what a try for Team GB. Into the semifinals. You
:28:41. > :28:47.feel for Argentina, what a game, it had its mirror moments, Argentina
:28:48. > :28:52.had a drop goal, Tom Mitchell did and they both missed, just. It was
:28:53. > :29:01.settled by one try, scored by Dan Bibby. And hats off to Simon Amor,
:29:02. > :29:04.the coach. He did not panic and he kept his gun team on the field and
:29:05. > :29:11.did not make a raft of substitutions. There he is, Simon
:29:12. > :29:16.Amor. And on that feed for the scrum he had his best site on, Mitchell
:29:17. > :29:21.and Bibby, all of the stars and what a try. He takes the outside. These
:29:22. > :29:27.are great pictures and you have to feel so sorry for Argentina. Well,
:29:28. > :29:32.not that sorry! They put up a magnificent effort and what a great
:29:33. > :29:36.game of seven aside rugby. I will never forget that. You could not
:29:37. > :29:45.think that 0-0 could be that exciting in a game of rugby. It was

:34:52. > :34:56.This has a context of its own, South Africa play Australia, they've
:34:57. > :34:59.already met today, that was an upset because South Africa cruised
:35:00. > :35:05.through, they looked elegant and fast, and powerful upfront. They
:35:06. > :35:09.came up against Australia who come yesterday, had been thoroughly
:35:10. > :35:15.disjointed. Australia turned them over. So... South Africa still went
:35:16. > :35:21.through as the pool winners, and Australia went through as one of the

:35:29. > :35:37.state of everybody here, it probably will. Anyway, off we go... Australia
:35:38. > :35:44.in yellow, gold and green rather. South Africa in the white shirts.
:35:45. > :35:50.Australia come away with it. One of the strange things this morning was

:35:58. > :36:02.be pleased to see that he has very much return to the field in the
:36:03. > :36:07.starting line-up now. Australia come away, Con Foley goes with the open
:36:08. > :36:10.ball, having passed it. James Stannard got cut this morning,
:36:11. > :36:14.now he's wearing the white scrum cap.
:36:15. > :36:34.Jesse Parahi. Dylan Sage comes flying in.
:36:35. > :36:41.Kwagga Smith makes the tackle. Cusack goes to ground, South Africa
:36:42. > :36:45.has the first penalty. Spectrum and got the ball off the

:37:00. > :37:03.The referee from Great Britain. The referee explaining that the ball is
:37:04. > :37:13.quite a way way -- Roscko Speckman. Jesse Parahi and Ed Jenkins and Tom

:37:58. > :38:00.Perhaps other Africa are making amends for what happened this

:38:10. > :38:17.are just having a look at the incident, this is the inside pass.
:38:18. > :38:23.Ron Kyle Brown. -- from Kyle Brown. Let's look at what happens after he
:38:24. > :38:35.touches down here. He scores... Nothing. That is all right. Just
:38:36. > :38:43.worrying that Roscko Speckman has not got up yet. Cecil Afrika will
:38:44. > :38:47.take the conversion, 5-0. We've already had one more try in this
:38:48. > :38:51.quarterfinal than we had in the Team GB and Argentina match. That
:38:52. > :39:01.quarterfinal was a right little epic. Just a quick headcount on the
:39:02. > :39:13.South African side, Roscko Speckman is back on his feet. They
:39:14. > :39:23.are back to their full contingent. Australia planned to receive the
:39:24. > :39:30.ball, Con Foley about to lift Ed Jenkins into the air. Ed Jenkins is
:39:31. > :39:36.the captain. It's become a feature today, not for the first time, that
:39:37. > :39:43.the pursuing player is in front of the kicker. The restart is so
:39:44. > :39:48.important. The guys chasing the kick getting in front of the line. You
:39:49. > :39:53.can't do that, keep behind the line, it gives free possession, the
:39:54. > :39:59.opposition in this case, the Australians... Stannard takes it
:40:00. > :40:09.through. Picked up by Henry Hutchison. The ploy worked. South
:40:10. > :40:20.Africa get the penalty. Excellent dancing with that dummy
:40:21. > :40:32.kick from Juan de Jongh. Cecil Afrika, drawing in two men.
:40:33. > :40:40.It's not Seabelo Senatla. He is not on yet. I beg your pardon, he is on
:40:41. > :40:45.the field. This is good Australian defence. Juan de Jongh sets up the
:40:46. > :40:56.attacking position. Phillips Nyman sets it up. -- Philip Snyman. And,
:40:57. > :41:04.Seabelo Senatla scores. Two tries for South Africa. A wonderful try
:41:05. > :41:07.from South Africa, why Cecil Afrika did not start in this morning 's
:41:08. > :41:12.game is one of the mysteries of the tournament. South Africa back to
:41:13. > :41:17.their full strength side, showing why they are a second-ranked team.
:41:18. > :41:25.Cecil Afrika is the heartbeat of this team. Seabelo Senatla is the
:41:26. > :41:31.leading try scorer. South Africa looked far more confident all, they
:41:32. > :41:41.have their big three forwards, in Philip Snyman, Smith, they kept them
:41:42. > :41:47.all out of the game. They are in the quarterfinals. Cannot quite cut it
:41:48. > :41:55.round and. 10-0, two tries, just over one minute left of this first
:41:56. > :42:00.half. Conditions have slightly changed since Team GB, the wind has
:42:01. > :42:10.died down and the rain stopped. We are back to normal procedures of
:42:11. > :42:14.tries in rugby. Cecil Afrika sends it high, it is
:42:15. > :42:28.well taken by Ed Jenkins. It's a penalty. Quickly taken. File of our
:42:29. > :42:35.low, keeping it well, -- Allan Fa'alava'au. The pass is not
:42:36. > :42:48.required, from Tom Cusack of Australia. A great response from the
:42:49. > :42:56.Australians. Tom Cusack scoring, you can see here that he starts to
:42:57. > :43:08.move... Real gas from Allan Fa'alava'au. And real power. Africa
:43:09. > :43:13.will be disappointed. Cecil Afrika is not a big man, but he stopped him
:43:14. > :43:19.in his tracks. He has to make two big tackles, you are right. He is
:43:20. > :43:31.not the most robust player. On the South African side. It hits the
:43:32. > :43:41.post. It's ten points to five, Cameron Clark is unable to add two.
:43:42. > :43:44.That's the great thing about rugby sevens, you have Smith here,
:43:45. > :43:50.potentially lifting Cecil Afrika for the restart. All of the players had
:43:51. > :43:57.to play all the skills in this game. Ed Jenkins in pursuit. Cecil
:43:58. > :44:10.Afrika... One thing he can do is be lifted. As a lightweight. Half-time,
:44:11. > :44:13.South Africa 10-5 Australia. Really top-quality rugby sevens,
:44:14. > :44:17.South Africa were right to keep the ball off there, deep in their own
:44:18. > :44:20.half. In the second half they have a slight wind advantage and will try
:44:21. > :44:27.to play a far more territory game. An excellent match from both sides
:44:28. > :44:34.here. I marvel at Cecil Afrika, he is a wonderful player. When he
:44:35. > :44:35.plays, the three big South African forwards alongside him, anything is
:44:36. > :44:51.possible. Deep within the huddles, the
:44:52. > :44:54.instructions coming out. Normal business was resumed, don't forget
:44:55. > :45:01.that Australia upset South Africa this morning. South Africa with
:45:02. > :45:06.Cecil Afrika in charge and with Seabelo Senatla back on the wing,
:45:07. > :45:17.seem to be cruising. That was their second try. But Australia, they gave
:45:18. > :45:22.them a bit of the power treatment. Nobody pushes these big South
:45:23. > :45:33.African defenders around easily. But when you see tackles being missed...
:45:34. > :45:38.Neil Powell, the very experienced South African coach, keeping things
:45:39. > :45:44.very calm. They are in control of this game. It is psychology,
:45:45. > :45:48.instinct, as we said, Australia beat South Africa comfortably earlier and
:45:49. > :45:57.here we are a few hours later in the quarterfinals. South Africa with a
:45:58. > :46:00.very different starting seven. And playing pretty well, they will be
:46:01. > :46:05.disappointed to have given that try away. And we have a top seven
:46:06. > :46:10.minutes of Olympic seven aside rugby coming up.
:46:11. > :46:26.Cameron Clark prepares to kick. Philip Snyman prepares to throw Kyle
:46:27. > :46:34.Brown into the air but he is not required. Snyman goes back. He picks
:46:35. > :46:41.up in his own 22. And the winner of this game plays Team GB tomorrow in
:46:42. > :46:47.the semifinal. Let's hope it goes to about eight stages of stoppage time!
:46:48. > :46:53.Brilliant ripping from Con Foley and it comes out to Henry Hutchison. A
:46:54. > :47:03.real chance for Australia now and they have numbers if Fa'alava'au can
:47:04. > :47:13.see them. Jenkins, perhaps not the fastest. Edward Jenkins, the captain
:47:14. > :47:19.of this Australian team. Very experienced but he will be annoyed
:47:20. > :47:26.at himself. Great rip from Foley to give Australia possession. He will
:47:27. > :47:29.be disappointed with that, it was a great hit by Smith, the big South
:47:30. > :47:36.African forward. You cannot lose possession. But South Africa have a
:47:37. > :47:41.long way to go and they have some real speedsters if they decide to
:47:42. > :47:50.kick the ball long. Here comes the boot. Australia have it covered,
:47:51. > :47:55.Allan Fa'alava'au way back. Henry Hutchison racing to get back with
:47:56. > :48:03.him. Fa'alava'au looks up and sizes of the opposition and goes for the
:48:04. > :48:12.indelicate sidestep. Wacom Australia through Hutchison. Pat McCutcheon
:48:13. > :48:16.helping at the ruck situation. He had to go in again. But it is a
:48:17. > :48:22.knock-on and South Africa will have the putting so the kick eventually
:48:23. > :48:28.works, not directly but an indirect benefit. Tactically, Arika was spot
:48:29. > :48:33.on, five yards out from your own line and a massive kick and a great
:48:34. > :48:37.chase and pressure and they get the turnover at the contact area to give
:48:38. > :48:43.themselves the ball. Allan Fa'alava'au at full tilt, this was
:48:44. > :48:54.in the build-up to the try. The big moment here. Arika going to first
:48:55. > :49:03.receiver from the scrum. Arika goes to the short side. De Jongh. With a
:49:04. > :49:06.handoff and what is the decision? I am sure they will have a look at it.
:49:07. > :49:21.The referee calls time off. Check everything I think. And they
:49:22. > :49:34.are right to check, these are big moments. He is not out of play or is
:49:35. > :49:41.his toe on the touchline? Good spot, I think you're right. The touchline
:49:42. > :49:49.is out, if any part of your body touches it you are out and I
:49:50. > :49:58.think... And does he lose the ball, is it knocked out of his hands?
:49:59. > :50:10.There is no downward pressure. It was quite an easy decision. It is a
:50:11. > :50:15.simple knock-on. The petition referee, just staying calm, a lot of
:50:16. > :50:22.pressure in this, just one score in it but South Africa have Australia
:50:23. > :50:32.right where they want them. Jesse Parahi is on for Australia.
:50:33. > :50:45.Big drive from South Africa. And Tom Kingston, who is fresh on, is
:50:46. > :50:55.disgusted with that kick. Kingston wearing 13. His first game in the
:50:56. > :51:00.Olympics. Just hoof it downfield and put the chase on them just like
:51:01. > :51:06.Arika did a few minutes ago. Such an easy tactic and so obvious.
:51:07. > :51:20.Beautifully taken by Kwagga Smith. Kyle Brown judging for the line. A
:51:21. > :51:26.loud blast and try awarded! Brown, the captain of this team. And it all
:51:27. > :51:33.came from the line-out, a great take by Smith. Again, Australia,
:51:34. > :51:38.especially Tom Kingston, will be kicking himself also to give South
:51:39. > :51:45.Africa possession in that part of the field. It had to go long. It
:51:46. > :51:54.puts South Africa two scores ahead with less than three minutes to go.
:51:55. > :52:03.The kick from Cecil Afrika is good. 17-5. It looks very much as if Great
:52:04. > :52:09.Britain will be facing South Africa in tomorrow's semi-. Still three
:52:10. > :52:13.minutes to go, a lot can happen in a quick amount of time if Australia
:52:14. > :52:18.can get this restart and score quickly. They still have a chance.
:52:19. > :52:31.This is where the restart are so important. Hi it goes. Snyman goes
:52:32. > :52:43.up. He knocks on. Australia with Tom Kingston. And it goes in his favour.
:52:44. > :52:53.Parahi, Kingston outside him. Here he is. A big handoff from the number
:52:54. > :53:05.13 but he is picked up. Parahi safely to Fa'alava'au. Jenkins.
:53:06. > :53:09.Crunching tackle on Foley. 'S name in hot pursuit. Brilliant by Parahi
:53:10. > :53:22.to get back. -- 's -- Philip Snyman in hot pursuit. Was
:53:23. > :53:28.there downward pressure or is that a try? Let's have another look at
:53:29. > :53:45.this. Nothing over the line. It is going
:53:46. > :53:54.to be a try, as long as Senatla gets pressure on this now. Which he does.
:53:55. > :53:59.I think he has scored. There is no downward pressure and it is not even
:54:00. > :54:09.on the line. The sheer force of the South African defence has caused
:54:10. > :54:14.this situation. That is a try. It looks like it is going to be
:54:15. > :54:18.awarded. As long as it did not come off a South African hand and it
:54:19. > :54:25.didn't and that is a try for South Africa. South Africa are into the
:54:26. > :54:30.semifinals of the Olympic Games. They will bring on all of their
:54:31. > :54:37.substitutes now. The coach, Neil Powell, knows they can give
:54:38. > :54:41.everybody a run. A fascinating game. This morning Australia were
:54:42. > :54:47.comfortable winners against South Africa. In the big game, they
:54:48. > :54:57.started with the right team, the men on the field. Off the post and out.
:54:58. > :55:05.22-5. Just over a minute to go. I would love to ask Neil Powell why he
:55:06. > :55:08.didn't start this team this morning. Perhaps the points difference was so
:55:09. > :55:13.good in their favour that he knew they could afford a hiccup. I can
:55:14. > :55:16.only assume he knew they were going to make the quarterfinals and he
:55:17. > :55:22.wanted to keep his players fresh with no injuries and it has worked
:55:23. > :55:28.for him. Tim Agaba wrestles for possession and at least helps get
:55:29. > :55:41.the putting for South Africa. The reason South Africa are ranked
:55:42. > :55:45.number two is because when they bring on their bench, people like
:55:46. > :55:56.Tim Agaba, they are very strong still. Sage as well, the big number
:55:57. > :56:07.one. Just great players. Here is Dylan Sage. Senatla cannot control
:56:08. > :56:11.it. Mouthwatering fixture, Team GB against South Africa in the
:56:12. > :56:20.semifinal of the Olympic Games. The final whistle goes. It is the
:56:21. > :56:27.easiest of the quarterfinals. South Africa have beaten Australia by a
:56:28. > :56:33.margin, by 17 points. 22-5. Compared with what went before, it was really
:56:34. > :56:37.a romp for South Africa but they will be relieved to get past
:56:38. > :56:43.Australia having met them for the second time today. It was probably
:56:44. > :56:46.the most one-sided of the quarterfinals. Australia will be
:56:47. > :56:51.bitterly disappointed because they came here fancied their chances.
:56:52. > :56:55.They prepared very well, that young team but they have not made the
:56:56. > :56:57.semifinals. It means that Great Britain tomorrow in the semifinal
:56:58. > :57:08.will play South Africa. Thank you for your coverage of the
:57:09. > :57:12.quarterfinals, brilliant, compelling viewing, particularly that Team GB
:57:13. > :57:16.Argentina match which, if you missed it earlier, we can bring you
:57:17. > :57:21.up-to-date with the quarterfinal results and run you through what
:57:22. > :57:28.will happen tomorrow. Fiji will take on Japan. Fiji beat New Zealand
:57:29. > :57:32.12-7, Japan beat France by the same scoreline. Team GB played Argentina
:57:33. > :57:36.and it was 0-0 after normal time so it went to sudden death, they hit
:57:37. > :57:40.the post with a drop goal but eventually got the try through
:57:41. > :57:45.Daniel Bibby and they go through to the semifinal to face South Africa.
:57:46. > :57:51.Both of those matches are tomorrow. And the medal matches follow those
:57:52. > :57:55.games. We will have another evening of rugby sevens which I know will go
:57:56. > :57:58.down well with a lot of you who have been watching the coverage including
:57:59. > :58:03.Nick who says he has been trying to go to bed for hours but he cannot
:58:04. > :58:07.stop watching the rugby! And it has been years of hard work but I'm sure
:58:08. > :58:10.everybody who has made it through to those semifinals will say that all
:58:11. > :58:39.that hard stuff has been well worth it.
:58:40. > :58:44.If you have been watching BBC Four for the last few days you will know
:58:45. > :58:47.that we like to update you on the headlines and there is not much
:58:48. > :58:54.going on the beach tonight because it is wet. 19 degrees in Rio which,
:58:55. > :59:00.hold on, we have got a runner! No, she has started walking. There is
:59:01. > :59:05.not much going on because by Rio standards it is like being at about
:59:06. > :59:10.-2 at home. It is 19 here, everybody is a bit miserable apart from us.
:59:11. > :59:15.Normally the beach is packed, we normally have our circuit training
:59:16. > :59:21.going on with Anthony Wall Thomson but he is not here. Maybe everybody
:59:22. > :59:25.is inside watching the Olympics. -- Antony Worrall Thompson. The last
:59:26. > :59:29.few hours have been sensational for GB, we have waited and we have been
:59:30. > :59:33.finishing in fourth place but today on wonderful Wednesday, the medals
:59:34. > :59:36.have started pouring in. We will bring you the headlines because we
:59:37. > :59:43.have had another medal in the last 30 minutes. We will start with the
:59:44. > :59:46.gold medals, first for Joe Clarke in the men's K1 kayak, the man from
:59:47. > :59:54.Stoke in his first Olympic Games and a very happy one for him and his
:59:55. > :59:58.family. What a performance from Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, winning
:59:59. > :00:01.gold in the three metre men's synchronised springboard final, the
:00:02. > :00:08.first ever Olympic gold for Great Britain in diving. And on to the
:00:09. > :00:15.bronze medals and Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms judo. She was nice
:00:16. > :00:22.four years ago but this time she has bronze. -- ninth. The same for Steve
:00:23. > :00:26.Scott in the men's double trap, it was a tight bronze medal match
:00:27. > :00:28.against fellow Brit Tim Kneale but it was Steve Scott who came through
:00:29. > :00:51.on top. .
:00:52. > :00:54.And in the last half an hour or so, this is monumental.
:00:55. > :01:01.Max Whitlock has taken bronze in the all-round final, the overwhelming
:01:02. > :01:08.favourite took gold, but it is the first gymnast on the podium in 108
:01:09. > :01:12.years for the men in the Olympics. So, we've had the madness of the
:01:13. > :01:16.rugby sevens, I know you've been enjoying that. We will bring you the
:01:17. > :01:20.archery in a moment, but let's get the reaction from South Africa, John
:01:21. > :01:27.Inverdale can speak to the last team he made it through to the last four
:01:28. > :01:31.in the rugby. -- who made it four. Congratulations, after before that
:01:32. > :01:37.was a straightforward quarterfinal? Not straightforward, the boys had to
:01:38. > :01:40.work hard, it's a hard-working side and never a pushover when you play
:01:41. > :01:44.against them. We knew in that quarterfinal, and this morning, that
:01:45. > :01:48.we could have lost against them but the other guys will be out the back
:01:49. > :01:52.after that loss today against them. Clive Woodward was commentating for
:01:53. > :01:56.us, he was musing your team selection this morning in the group
:01:57. > :02:00.game, was it a tactic, lining up for the match you just played? It's
:02:01. > :02:04.about giving the guys opportunities and managing gametime, it's a long
:02:05. > :02:09.tournament and a lot of minutes to be played. It felt like we have 12
:02:10. > :02:14.players in the squad, you could select any and it is still a good
:02:15. > :02:17.squad. It didn't work out for us this morning but the guys coming
:02:18. > :02:23.into the system did well to pick up the pieces. For obvious reasons,
:02:24. > :02:25.people have been talking about this tournament is a huge opportunity in
:02:26. > :02:38.the USA and -- Japan in the semifinal. How could
:02:39. > :02:42.this change things? It's very much a country where the World Cup is
:02:43. > :02:48.massive, we do not have the Olympics culture that America or Australia
:02:49. > :02:53.has. I think, if we can be successful, we can still win against
:02:54. > :03:00.South Africa. It is massive for rugby across the world, and rugby
:03:01. > :03:05.sevens is good for all nations, like Japan can be competitive, if you are
:03:06. > :03:10.on the field everybody has the chance to win a title. And it's
:03:11. > :03:14.Great Britain now? Yes, they are a quality side. They are one of the
:03:15. > :03:21.inform sides of the tournament for me. We must make sure that we
:03:22. > :03:26.perform properly. Thank you for talking to us. Thank you. Loads of
:03:27. > :03:35.people talking about how they'd been watching the rugby.
:03:36. > :03:39.Max Whitlock on BBC One, the rugby on BBC Four, it's been iPad,
:03:40. > :03:45.television, and laptop, watching two screens at once. Pulling it all at
:03:46. > :03:49.once. They queue for your suggestions... Things are blowing
:03:50. > :03:55.away here! Thank you for your suggestions for what we should call
:03:56. > :04:04.it today, we said Wonderful Wednesdays, someone else says Caven
:04:05. > :04:16.watery Wednesday, Max says he's been watching everything.
:04:17. > :04:20.Win-credible Wednesday. It should improve tomorrow, when we take on
:04:21. > :04:23.South Africa in the rugby sevens final.
:04:24. > :04:27.We can go back to the Deodoro Stadium in a moment, we can get the
:04:28. > :04:35.reaction from Sir Clive Woodward who was speaking to so John Inverdale.
:04:36. > :04:39.Simile people watching at home -- so many people watching at home, not
:04:40. > :04:44.into their rugby, for the vast majority of viewers, they are
:04:45. > :04:47.delighted that Team GB have made it through to the semifinals.
:04:48. > :04:53.The last two hours have been a staggering advert for seven aside
:04:54. > :04:58.rugby? Yes. I've had great days in rugby but the last couple of hours
:04:59. > :05:01.is up there with the best. All of the quarterfinals had something
:05:02. > :05:06.special, but the British against Argentina was amazing. I knew it
:05:07. > :05:10.would be close, Argentina are a good team but tactically, Team GB got it
:05:11. > :05:14.right. Mitchell was outstanding in leading the team. Hats off to Simon
:05:15. > :05:19.Amor, the coach kept his cool and put the right players on the field.
:05:20. > :05:24.An amazing game. A great addition to the Olympics, but it's interesting
:05:25. > :05:27.in the response that we are getting in the studio from thousands of
:05:28. > :05:32.people who are not rugby fans but have seen this, and they like it,
:05:33. > :05:36.they fancy it, they would like more. That is what rugby sevens can do for
:05:37. > :05:40.rugby as a whole. Yes, fundamentally, it is a more simple
:05:41. > :05:45.game. Seven players on the field, it's great for women's and men's
:05:46. > :05:50.games, men and women can play, it is simple, you can understand it. I've
:05:51. > :05:54.coached at a top-level, sometimes I look in and see decisions and go,
:05:55. > :05:59.what is that for? You can't understand it. It's a wonderful game
:06:00. > :06:02.and, for the Olympics, I think these athletes, men and women can walk
:06:03. > :06:09.around the village and go head to head with any of them. All of the
:06:10. > :06:15.teams, the men and women's, have added to the tournament. It is
:06:16. > :06:20.simple to watch, when you see such powerful athletes, power, speed and
:06:21. > :06:25.skill, a huge amount of skill. It almost encapsulates a view of the
:06:26. > :06:29.Olympic sports. You have speed, contact of tae kwon do players, the
:06:30. > :06:36.skills of handball, basketball, netball,
:06:37. > :06:41.all these players. These are great athletes, it's the first time I've
:06:42. > :06:46.watched every game of rugby sevens, you pick up so much. I'm pleased but
:06:47. > :06:53.people who have not watched rugby for four go that this is a fantastic
:06:54. > :06:57.game. Do you think there are lessons to be learned from this, there are
:06:58. > :07:02.millions watching, are there lessons for rugby in Britain about how the
:07:03. > :07:06.sport should be more embraced by rugby clubs and federations and
:07:07. > :07:11.unions in the UK? Fanelli, after this I think all of the unions will
:07:12. > :07:18.set down and go, what do we do about this? -- absolutely. The moment
:07:19. > :07:21.seven Scott the nods to be an Olympic sport, about seven years
:07:22. > :07:30.ago, I thought it could really take off, not only in the UK but around
:07:31. > :07:35.the world -- sevens rugby got the nod. The Chinese are taking it
:07:36. > :07:41.seriously, the Americans and the Russians. The currency of the
:07:42. > :07:46.Olympics is huge. You do 115 aside rugby in the Olympic Games can be 17
:07:47. > :07:53.aside. I used Tom Mitchell is a real role model. He is one of the best
:07:54. > :07:58.players in the whole world. He does not fit well in the 15 aside game.
:07:59. > :08:05.They are players who can operate at this level and have the
:08:06. > :08:11.target. In the World Cup, and in women's
:08:12. > :08:15.rugby, it is fantastic. I have been through most of the biographies of
:08:16. > :08:22.all of the women on the 12 teams, some come to rugby late, they come
:08:23. > :08:25.from athletics and netball. We have international netball
:08:26. > :08:29.players, who want to come and play rugby because it's in the Olympics.
:08:30. > :08:33.It is an exciting time for the sport, and I'm delighted with the
:08:34. > :08:38.response from all of the viewers, you have new people watching who can
:08:39. > :08:41.understand the rugby. Sometimes it is difficult to explain
:08:42. > :08:45.the rules to them. Thank you. Exciting times for rugby but the key
:08:46. > :08:49.thing is, when you have that opportunity, do not let the door
:08:50. > :08:53.close, seize the moment. As you say, Dan, we've had an
:08:54. > :08:55.extraordinary last couple of hours, let's hope we have more of the same
:08:56. > :09:00.tomorrow. Brilliant watch, there are so many
:09:01. > :09:03.of you enjoying what we've been seeing and many watching rugby for
:09:04. > :09:08.the first time. If you are hooked and want to know
:09:09. > :09:13.what happens, semifinals tomorrow, 6:30pm your time, that's Fiji
:09:14. > :09:20.against Japan, and Team GB against South Africa, that at seven o'clock.
:09:21. > :09:24.Tomorrow for that semifinal match. Then the bronze and gold medal
:09:25. > :09:28.matches will follow those games. We have another night of rugby sevens
:09:29. > :09:34.on the BBC for you. The good thing about BBC Four is we have time and
:09:35. > :09:38.space on occasions to read your texts and tweets. We often ask for
:09:39. > :09:43.them and read them out. Let me read these out. Mick says, do you have a
:09:44. > :09:49.shopping trolley like Clare Balding has on BBC One? No. That's the short
:09:50. > :09:53.answer because we don't have the budget BBC One but we do have this
:09:54. > :09:58.beautiful shrubbery, look how much greenery we have got around us! I'm
:09:59. > :10:02.sure Clare Balding and her pals on BBC One are jealous of the amount of
:10:03. > :10:06.shrubbery we've got. I think we had too much last night, it was blowing
:10:07. > :10:10.in the wind and causing issues, so we have removed some. I'm sure you
:10:11. > :10:15.are happy to hear that. Martin wants to know, tell me the truth, I'm
:10:16. > :10:19.looking at the beach, you are definitely not at Copacabana, you
:10:20. > :10:25.are at Whitley Bay. Martin, that is harsh! That's a dig at our
:10:26. > :10:30.incredible production values. I don't know how to prove it is
:10:31. > :10:34.Copacabana... Can we show this way? It is a dirty shot with lights and
:10:35. > :10:40.bits in... There is a buzz with Copacabana on it! We missed it. But
:10:41. > :10:48.there was a bus with Copacabana Beach on it. I will find official
:10:49. > :10:52.confirmation but we are in Brazil. Kayleigh says, no Anthony Wall
:10:53. > :10:56.Thompson? I'm. We are waiting, normally he's here. If you are
:10:57. > :11:00.watching for the first time, it's not actually him but someone who
:11:01. > :11:05.looks like him. He has been here doing circuit training the last two
:11:06. > :11:10.nights, but it's wet and horrible. We aren't giving up yet, we are here
:11:11. > :11:16.until 2am. If he turns up, we will show him to you! Guaranteed.
:11:17. > :11:21.From the madness of rugby sevens, let's bring you up-to-date with what
:11:22. > :11:25.is happening in the medal table. The good news, from the great British
:11:26. > :11:30.point of view, we are on page one! There it is, right at the bottom but
:11:31. > :11:35.we will take it. Three golds, three silvers and six bronzes.
:11:36. > :11:41.Two golds and for bronzes today. The big boys at the top, the US and
:11:42. > :11:44.China, they finished in first and second four years ago.
:11:45. > :11:52.Can you remember how many medals Team GB one in 2012? Anyone? 65!
:11:53. > :11:57.That's the correct answer. 29 of those were gold. We can see how far
:11:58. > :12:02.we can climb up the medal table over the coming days but the good news is
:12:03. > :12:05.we are on page one. It has been frantic, but we will
:12:06. > :12:10.relax after the rugby sevens. Safe to say we all need a breather, even
:12:11. > :12:12.those of you introduced to rugby for the first time.
:12:13. > :12:17.More sedate but no less important. Our tree is where we will turn our
:12:18. > :12:22.attention. Only one representative for Team GB in individual archery,
:12:23. > :12:27.his name is Patrick Huston, he is from Northern Ireland in the men's
:12:28. > :12:33.archery. And Naomi Folkard takes place in the women's side of things,
:12:34. > :12:37.but Northern Ireland shall our job Patrick Huston, we will watch him in
:12:38. > :12:43.his round of 32 match, if he wins committee gets into the last 16, he
:12:44. > :12:49.is taking on Rick Vander then, no surprises that he is from the
:12:50. > :12:53.Netherlands. Commentator is Charlie Broom. That's at the Sambodromo, ten
:12:54. > :13:02.or 11 miles that way from where we are. It was going on a few hours
:13:03. > :13:10.ago, it's not live, but this is the archery, and we are watching BBC
:13:11. > :13:15.Four. Here we go... COMMENTATOR: The higher ranked of the two archers in
:13:16. > :13:33.this round, shooting first on target number one.
:13:34. > :13:52.That is an eight. That is a great opening arrow. He enjoyed that.
:13:53. > :14:03.Nine, can Patrick Houston back up his opening ten? 20 seconds per
:14:04. > :14:10.arrow. You can see the clock is coming in bottom left of the screen,
:14:11. > :14:13.but it is a nine. Patrick Houston has the chance to win the opening
:14:14. > :14:24.set, the matter what Rick van der Ven scores with his final arrow of
:14:25. > :14:28.the first set. Nine, a total of 26. If Patrick Houston can score eight
:14:29. > :14:34.or more, he takes the opening set, a seven will tie it and it is and
:14:35. > :14:39.eight. The opening ten gives him the cushion which he required at the end
:14:40. > :14:49.of the first set. He is two set points to the good against Rick van
:14:50. > :14:53.der Ven of the Netherlands. If you are wondering how the individual
:14:54. > :14:58.competition works, it is on a set scoring system. Each set, as you've
:14:59. > :15:03.seen, is three arrows. You outscore your opponent with a total of three
:15:04. > :15:09.arrows and you get two set points. If you equalled their total, one set
:15:10. > :15:11.point. It's the first archer to six set points who goes through to the
:15:12. > :15:31.next round. The target is 70 metres away down
:15:32. > :15:43.the range. The ten zone is the size of a DVD or CD. From 70 metres away,
:15:44. > :15:50.it is a very small looking target. Van der Ven is behind on the
:15:51. > :16:01.scoreboard so he will go first. The first term of the match.
:16:02. > :16:28.Up against the clock. It doesn't faze the Dutch archer who finds at
:16:29. > :16:39.ten and Huston is now under some pressure. He is just a little
:16:40. > :16:43.wayward. Eight or better for Van der Ven just as Huston had in the first
:16:44. > :16:53.set will be enough to win the two set points. And just like Huston, he
:16:54. > :17:05.needs the full cushion of the previous two arrows. The wind pretty
:17:06. > :17:10.constant from the right. Nine, so 28-26. Rick van der Ven levelled it
:17:11. > :17:27.up in the second set. Rick van der Ven beat the number one
:17:28. > :17:39.seed in the third round in the London games, 7-1. What a big upset
:17:40. > :17:48.that was. The first Dutch archer to reach the World Championship final
:17:49. > :17:52.in Copenhagen. He has also won and individual event in the World Cup in
:17:53. > :18:02.2014 in Poland. So, Van der Ven will continue to
:18:03. > :18:29.shoot first with the scores level. Nine. If you are wondering what
:18:30. > :18:34.happened if the clock ticks down to zero, the hooter sounds and the
:18:35. > :18:36.archer loses the highest scoring arrow at the end. It costs you at
:18:37. > :19:28.the end in this level. Nine, so 27 the score for Van der
:19:29. > :19:41.Ven. Nine or ten will win the set for Huston. It is nine. Huston takes
:19:42. > :19:45.it 28-27 and he leads by four set points to two and Van der Ven is
:19:46. > :19:49.under pressure and he needs something from this fourth set or he
:19:50. > :19:56.is out. Patrick Huston just having a chat with his coach. We talked about
:19:57. > :20:04.Van der Ven's achievements, Cambuur won two gold medals at the 2030
:20:05. > :20:11.world youth Championships in China -- Huston won. He qualified for
:20:12. > :20:11.these games with his performance at the European archery Championships
:20:12. > :20:29.in Nottingham. Huston has set himself the target of
:20:30. > :20:36.winning the gold medal here in Rio. He has got a very tough first-round
:20:37. > :20:44.match up against Van der Ven. But he does have the advantage. He has put
:20:45. > :20:56.Van der Ven under pressure. We saw him respond well in the second set.
:20:57. > :21:04.Nine, the wind just increasing from the archers' right. As they look
:21:05. > :21:22.down the range. Ten. Van der Ven just getting the
:21:23. > :21:32.line and that is enough to score at ten -- a ten. Eight, just drops low.
:21:33. > :21:49.Nine or more will take the set. Eight would give Huston the chance.
:21:50. > :21:58.But he doesn't, 28, that will be four set points apiece. Houston get
:21:59. > :22:03.the tenth but it is in vain and it is for roll. This one is absolutely
:22:04. > :22:19.nip and tuck -- it is for Van Deventer is in front. Either
:22:20. > :22:22.way, this is a very close match. Between the world number seven and
:22:23. > :23:01.the world number 39. With Van der Ven to shoot first. If
:23:02. > :23:07.we have a tie after this set, we will go to a one arrow shoot off and
:23:08. > :23:11.closest to the centre wins. Let's see what happens with these six
:23:12. > :23:22.arrows. Van der Ven opens with a nine.
:23:23. > :23:48.Ten. A good reply from Van der Ven to keep the pressure on.
:23:49. > :24:08.Nine. 19 points apiece and it comes down to the last arrow of the set.
:24:09. > :24:18.Van der Ven sends down and ate and this is a real opportunity for
:24:19. > :24:26.Patrick Houston. -- eight. He has done it, Patrick Huston. And he
:24:27. > :24:31.takes the scalp of Rick van der Ven, the World Championship silver
:24:32. > :24:39.medallist who was fourth in London. Patrick Huston advances to the
:24:40. > :24:45.second round and he is all smiles on the shooting line. A fantastic
:24:46. > :24:48.performance from him. He takes the fifth set, 28-27, and the match,
:24:49. > :24:58.6-4. A brilliant performance from Patrick
:24:59. > :25:01.Huston and he goes into the last 16 to take on the world number two, Ku
:25:02. > :25:10.Bon-chan. It is often the case that the higher
:25:11. > :25:14.seeded archer decides to go first so it will be Ku who gets this
:25:15. > :25:44.second-round match underway. Houston opens with a ten. Excellent
:25:45. > :25:50.start from Huston, he started his first-round match with a ten. And
:25:51. > :25:54.the key to getting past a Korean archer is to put them under
:25:55. > :25:59.pressure. Put them under pressure and if they give you an opportunity,
:26:00. > :26:08.by that I mean scoring eight or less, then you must take it.
:26:09. > :26:24.20 seconds per arrow. Huston and Ku cannot be split after two arrows of
:26:25. > :26:30.this opening set. And that from Ku almost slap in the middle of the
:26:31. > :26:41.target, a fantastic final arrow. Can Huston reply in kind? No, he can't,
:26:42. > :26:49.it is a way, eight. And so Ku Bon-chan, the number six seed, takes
:26:50. > :26:59.the opener, 29-27, and he goes into a 2-0 lead. Fantastic second arrow
:27:00. > :27:10.from Ku Bon-chan, like in the centre of the target. -- right in the
:27:11. > :27:15.centre. Huston needs to be consistent and consistently good,
:27:16. > :27:20.like that. If he can keep that pressure on Ku, he had a chance. The
:27:21. > :27:30.number one seed went out in the second round by giving up a couple
:27:31. > :27:34.of opportunities. Will Ku be so generous? We will have to wait and
:27:35. > :27:48.see. Huston, behind on the scoreboard, will shoot first.
:27:49. > :28:11.From the look on Ku's face, he thought it might have been away but
:28:12. > :28:26.such are his standards, it was away from the centre slightly. Nine.
:28:27. > :28:37.Ten. This is fantastic shooting from Ku Bon-chan.
:28:38. > :28:51.That is eight, he has got to stay out of the red if he possibly can.
:28:52. > :28:59.Well, a rare miss from Ku but it doesn't matter, it is enough to go
:29:00. > :29:06.into a 4-0 lead and now Patrick Huston needs to find something from
:29:07. > :29:14.this next set. In fact, he needs to find something from the next two
:29:15. > :29:20.sets. Must win one of the next two sets if he wants to go through to
:29:21. > :29:23.the next round. He is looking down at the television screen, there is
:29:24. > :29:27.one just in front of the shooting line and that tells the arches where
:29:28. > :29:35.the arrows have landed in the target. -- archers. Great skill from
:29:36. > :29:48.Ku Bon-chan and Patrick Huston. So, Patrick Huston down by four set
:29:49. > :30:32.points. Now... Ku Bon-chan to the first set,
:30:33. > :30:34.can Patrick Huston back up the ten with another?
:30:35. > :30:39.Just missing, not far away, it goes down as a nine star on the screens
:30:40. > :30:53.here, despite the call from the announcers. That is some shooting
:30:54. > :31:04.under pressure. Huston will get something from this set if it is a
:31:05. > :31:13.ten... 28, possibly 29. Depending on that nine star. So, we have to wait
:31:14. > :31:21.and see... It is a ten, 29, 28, or possibly 29-29. We will have to wait
:31:22. > :31:25.and see the target Judge -- 29-28. I think Patrick Houston knows that the
:31:26. > :31:31.nine star is not going to be upgraded and he's gone to shake
:31:32. > :31:38.hands with Ku Bon-chan. Great Britain's only representative in the
:31:39. > :31:46.men's archery competition is out in the second round, beaten by the
:31:47. > :31:52.world number two, Ku Bon-chan. At the screen, waiting to get
:31:53. > :31:57.confirmation. It is a nine. Sir Patrick Houston is out, beaten 29-28
:31:58. > :32:06.in the third set will stop Ku Bon-chan goes through. Six
:32:07. > :32:12.setpoints- zero. Disappointment for Patrick Houston,
:32:13. > :32:14.but an amazing fight in that round of 32 against Dutchman Rick van der
:32:15. > :32:20.Ven. Thank you to the hundreds of you, it
:32:21. > :32:24.has been hundreds, contacting us on social media asking about archery.
:32:25. > :32:28.When they saw the Dutch coach behind Rick van der Ven, they thought
:32:29. > :32:31.Jurgen Klopp had a second job before the Premier League season started,
:32:32. > :32:37.what do you think? No? We aren't sure. From a distance
:32:38. > :32:42.may be, he has a touch of Jurgen Klopp, we will give you a six out of
:32:43. > :32:46.ten, halfway! Many people not believing we are at Copacabana,
:32:47. > :32:54.because it is cold and wet here. People say it is Whitley Bay, stop
:32:55. > :33:03.this, it is blithe! Do they have coconuts in by the Whitley Bay?
:33:04. > :33:09.Hopefully that is conclusive proof. We have had lied rugby sevens, live
:33:10. > :33:14.gymnastics, now it is the boxing. It hasn't been the best Olympics for
:33:15. > :33:23.Team GB, five of 12 boxers have gone home having lost, we have Joe Ward
:33:24. > :33:27.of Ireland, fighting his Ecuadorian opponent, he won silver at the World
:33:28. > :33:33.Championships last year. Gold at the Europeans. Here he is coming into
:33:34. > :33:37.the ring. Let's get the commentary, it's the men's lightweight round of
:33:38. > :33:45.32, with Richie Woodhall and Rob McIntosh. COMMENTATOR: Plenty of
:33:46. > :33:49.support for Ireland, Joe Ward is just 22 years old, the light
:33:50. > :33:55.heavyweight from West Leeds has acquired an impressive collection of
:33:56. > :33:59.medals in international competitions over the years. The reigning
:34:00. > :34:02.European Championship gold medallist is second in the continental
:34:03. > :34:55.tournament and the World Championship silver as well.
:34:56. > :35:04.BELL We are under way in the 81 kilograms
:35:05. > :35:09.light heavyweight division, this is action from the second preliminary
:35:10. > :35:13.round to determine who goes through to the final eight stage, contested
:35:14. > :35:19.between boxers from Ecuador and Ireland, the man in blue with
:35:20. > :35:23.distinctive yellow boot is Joe support, just 22 years old, ranked
:35:24. > :35:28.number three in the world. Installed as the tournament number
:35:29. > :35:30.four seed, and his opponent in red is the confident Ecuadorian
:35:31. > :35:35.character, Carlos Andres Mina, 24 years old.
:35:36. > :35:41.He is ranked number 27 in the world. You can see in the manner he
:35:42. > :35:44.approached the boxing ring and how he conducted himself in the boxing
:35:45. > :35:49.ring, that he is full of self belief. A very confident young man
:35:50. > :35:54.indeed, Carlos Andres Mina. I don't know who has the bright socks or
:35:55. > :35:59.boots in this, I think that Jo Pettitt him, the best socks in the
:36:00. > :36:08.tournament have to go to this fellow, Mina. -- I think that Joe
:36:09. > :36:14.beats him. Mina had an impressive victory... An impressive counter off
:36:15. > :36:24.the ropes from Ward, an untidy tangle to the floor as he takes him
:36:25. > :36:35.down in a headlock, in an NMA style move. He beat Serge Michel in that
:36:36. > :36:39.last round. Carlos Andres Mina is boxing in a
:36:40. > :36:40.crafty contest, just edging up, because he wants that right hand,
:36:41. > :36:55.you see. You can see if he goes to far-away committee falls short.
:36:56. > :37:00.He has his work cut out. He needs to bring it back onto his
:37:01. > :37:06.left hand, lay back from the waist. This fellow, edging forward, stops
:37:07. > :37:09.that with his right hand. Water targets the body effectively, three
:37:10. > :37:14.times in succession with a whipping left hand above the belt line.
:37:15. > :37:20.Slowing down, the fleetfooted forward movement of Carlos Andres
:37:21. > :37:25.Mina. A strange interlude as Joe Ward tenses back, not sure why.
:37:26. > :37:30.A cracking left hand. Carlos Andres Mina looks keen to hold on but now
:37:31. > :37:39.he works away. An exclusive contest, this one.
:37:40. > :37:46.Carlos Andres Mina on the front that immediately, -- City immediately.
:37:47. > :37:52.The referee allows them to work way but it is physical and rough.
:37:53. > :37:56.Getting caught up little, for as a night
:37:57. > :38:06.-- throws a nice shot down stairs. Here is the right hand, this fellow
:38:07. > :38:14.from Ecuador is dangerous. Listening to what is being said in the
:38:15. > :38:21.respective corners... I think it is a fair round, impressive on that
:38:22. > :38:25.front foot, but at the same time there is an air of caution as he
:38:26. > :38:32.moves forward, keeping Joe Ward on the back foot. He does not want to
:38:33. > :38:41.fall short with his right hand which is why he is edging in. It is split.
:38:42. > :38:47.Ward gets it, 2-1. Judges a and C favour the work of the number four
:38:48. > :39:02.seed, hats a fair reflection of a competitive opening three minutes.
:39:03. > :39:12.Through to the second round, and the atmosphere at Riocentro Pavilion six
:39:13. > :39:17.is electric. Wonderful support from the fans here, in fraud by this 81
:39:18. > :39:26.kilograms light heavyweight contest which burst into life with explosive
:39:27. > :39:28.passages between, a good hand from Carlos Andres Mina.
:39:29. > :39:34.Trying to lead his men with that hand. Carlos Andres Mina targets
:39:35. > :39:42.with a good and straight right. You can see that as he comes forward, he
:39:43. > :39:48.act aggressively, but in those final few inches he hesitates. It will
:39:49. > :39:53.come to a shot, he is just waiting to throw the right hand. He knows
:39:54. > :39:58.that is the shot that he wants to land and will do the most damage
:39:59. > :40:04.against Ward. He targets the body but fell short on that occasion. The
:40:05. > :40:09.boxers are struggling to hear the instructions of the referee, it is
:40:10. > :40:16.quite it in here, that is a point off the card of Joe Ward, excessive
:40:17. > :40:21.holding, a judgment from the referee, Mina walks in.
:40:22. > :40:29.At the conclusion of this round, regardless of how it plays out, if
:40:30. > :40:34.nobody is knocked out, a point will be removed from the school of Joe
:40:35. > :40:42.Ward. Took the opening round for judges A and C, they scored in
:40:43. > :40:47.favour of Mina. A point will be removed from Ward's score tally
:40:48. > :40:57.after being penalised for the infraction of excessive holding. He
:40:58. > :41:01.has to win this round, if he wins this round, the point is deducted
:41:02. > :41:04.and it becomes 9-9, it's imperative he wins.
:41:05. > :41:11.He may decide to go on the front that and pushes man back. Terrific
:41:12. > :41:17.shot succession for Ward, setting him up with a southpaw left.
:41:18. > :41:26.Twice in rapid succession. Good left hand to the body again.
:41:27. > :41:31.Watch, level, he continues to be physical on the inside. These two
:41:32. > :41:35.light heavyweight test the strength of one another. Mina is all brute
:41:36. > :41:39.force and strength, isn't he? With his right hand, his speed cross
:41:40. > :41:46.occasionally, square here. He would not let him off that. That is where
:41:47. > :41:53.Ward has to punch. On the inside again, they both had
:41:54. > :41:57.to do more on the inside. Ten second, the clapper is barely
:41:58. > :41:59.audible here, such as the noise being produced by the fans.
:42:00. > :42:03.BELL There is the bell, let's have a look
:42:04. > :42:07.at how the scores are played out. Let's go to the blue corner and see
:42:08. > :42:24.if we can listen to what is being said.
:42:25. > :42:29.See what's working? Go full body... Wants him to be busier on the inside
:42:30. > :42:34.more than anything, Joe Ward, not working the way he normally does.
:42:35. > :42:41.Penalised for holding, that was a bad shot there. Heads nearly clash.
:42:42. > :42:46.Both boxers missing their target. Trying to catch each other with
:42:47. > :42:53.long-range punches. Let's have a look at the scores, it could be
:42:54. > :43:01.vital... It's a 1-point deficit for judges be
:43:02. > :43:06.and C, faced by Ward. Judge A has it the other way, it looks like Ward
:43:07. > :43:11.won the round but one point taken away makes it a 9-9 round, that's
:43:12. > :43:15.why Ward comes out blazing. The contest is up for grabs as we go
:43:16. > :43:23.into the third and final round. You can see the Irish emphasising and
:43:24. > :43:29.working across his body. That is what Ward is doing. Threes and fours
:43:30. > :43:33.downstairs, not bad for Ward. Mina has to concentrate on his boxing
:43:34. > :43:37.more. He's getting tied up on the inside, work on his distance.
:43:38. > :43:43.He needs to create space, throw that right hand and finish with a left
:43:44. > :43:45.hook. But he falls in on his opponent on occasion.
:43:46. > :43:50.Again making mistakes coming forward but he gets away with it, surprising
:43:51. > :43:56.from Joe Ward. He should be scoring as Mina comes forward there. Ward
:43:57. > :44:00.pushes his man away, but Mina steps right back in, launching that right
:44:01. > :44:07.hand with bad intentions as the action resumes. Once again... Ward
:44:08. > :44:11.seems to invoke the ire of the referee. He's already got a warning
:44:12. > :44:17.in the course of the second round. A double left hand from Mina. Ward
:44:18. > :44:21.tries to time it with the southpaw left but it was partially blocked by
:44:22. > :44:26.the man in red. Looking more tired now, Ward. He's
:44:27. > :44:32.had to wait a long time to box. We spoke about this earlier. We went to
:44:33. > :44:37.the Olympic Village. This does not do you any favours,
:44:38. > :44:41.you have to get going in the tournament. In the first one, you
:44:42. > :44:47.feel the pace a bit and it is affecting Ward in this last round, I
:44:48. > :44:51.think. The referee again talking to Joe Ward, the Irishman has to watch
:44:52. > :44:56.how he conducts himself. A cracking southpaw left as he comes in.
:44:57. > :45:02.Look at how physical it is at close quarters. The referee is talking to
:45:03. > :45:10.Joe Ward again. He is operating on the edge of the rule book, Joe Ward.
:45:11. > :45:19.He is tired, Ward, the way he is holding. The rectory is going to
:45:20. > :45:26.take another point. My goodness. -- the referee. That is calamitous, a
:45:27. > :45:31.cracking right hand from Mina. He beat Joe Ward to the punch again.
:45:32. > :45:37.But for the second round in succession, a point has been removed
:45:38. > :45:42.from a total of Joe Ward for excessive holding. Once in Round 2
:45:43. > :45:47.and once in Round 3 and the man from Ireland appears to be fading badly.
:45:48. > :45:53.He is holding on again despite the repeated warnings. Tried the left to
:45:54. > :46:00.the body again. I'm convinced that the buoy has done Joe Ward no good
:46:01. > :46:16.at all and has lost him this contest -- bye. He has left everything in
:46:17. > :46:26.the ring no doubt but this man was rugged and strong and intense
:46:27. > :46:29.throughout the three rounds. Ward, serious disadvantage to overcome a
:46:30. > :46:35.having point deducted in Round 2 and Round 3. Mina was rough and tough
:46:36. > :46:40.and kept on coming. Not a bad shot from Joe Ward but I think the bye
:46:41. > :46:48.and waiting has cost him. Mina already has one contest. We can
:46:49. > :46:55.listen do has got it, don't think it is Ward.
:46:56. > :47:06.Make no mistake, this will be an upset. And
:47:07. > :47:22.ladies and gentlemen, the winner, by split decision... In the red
:47:23. > :47:27.corner... Carlos Andres Mina! The competent Ecuadorian prevails by a
:47:28. > :47:31.split decision victory over league tournament number four seed, the
:47:32. > :47:35.number three ranked boxer in the world, eliminated. And the man who
:47:36. > :47:41.has two World Championship medals under his belt from the previous two
:47:42. > :47:45.editions, Joe Ward is out on his first Olympic contest after
:47:46. > :47:49.receiving a bye in the first preliminary round. This is how, a
:47:50. > :47:55.split decision victory in favour of Carlos Andres Mina. Joe Ward will
:47:56. > :47:57.take no further part in the Olympic tournament as he is eliminated in
:47:58. > :48:08.the second preliminary round. That was from just a few moments
:48:09. > :48:13.ago. We will try to bring you some more boxing in the next few days
:48:14. > :48:16.because it is one of those sports, everyday we are here, there is live
:48:17. > :48:22.boxing taking place. It has not been a big Olympics so far for GB when it
:48:23. > :48:25.comes to the ring them that if six of the 12 boxers who are now out.
:48:26. > :48:31.Half have gone but we will continue to follow a success or failure of
:48:32. > :48:36.those remaining. One thing we have not shown you and a lot of you have
:48:37. > :48:40.requested this, is some basketball action. This is what is happening at
:48:41. > :48:46.the moment in the Carioca Arena 2 stop it is half-time at the moment
:48:47. > :48:55.between the dream team, USA, and Australia. Australia are actually
:48:56. > :49:01.beating Team USA 54-49. We are going to join this in a few moments taking
:49:02. > :49:09.you through the second half. We will be live a little later but Australia
:49:10. > :49:14.are winning at the moment. We will see if they can come back in about
:49:15. > :49:19.five or ten minutes time. It has been a great day for Team GB with
:49:20. > :49:24.two gold medals and four bronze medals and one of those came for
:49:25. > :49:26.Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms judo and this has been the story of
:49:27. > :49:35.her day. The room 70 kilo judo contest and
:49:36. > :49:41.Sally Conway making her first appearance -- the women's contest.
:49:42. > :49:53.That is it. Not hanging around at all. Awarded the ippon with less
:49:54. > :49:55.than a minute gone. Ippon for Sally Conway! What a reversal and what a
:49:56. > :50:11.move! Ippon awarded for Sally Conway! And
:50:12. > :50:19.Olympic semifinal awaits! A third ippon in a row.
:50:20. > :50:27.That is amazing stuff, it will go into golden score. Sally Conway is
:50:28. > :50:31.almost won this match three times. She has lost it! She has been taken
:50:32. > :50:46.down. Sally Conway gets the medal! A
:50:47. > :50:49.bronze medal and I have to say that she fully deserves it. Absolute
:50:50. > :50:59.brilliance. Lovely to see a smiling Sally
:51:00. > :51:03.Conway, delighted with her bronze medal and I should clear something
:51:04. > :51:10.up, Joe Ward is obviously representing Ireland. There are so
:51:11. > :51:13.many athletes the beating and hopefully you will forgive me that
:51:14. > :51:20.error! We will try to keep you up-to-date -- athletes competing.
:51:21. > :51:21.Apologies to everybody! That bring you the gold medal match from that
:51:22. > :51:40.70 kilo category. Here we go, the final, gold and
:51:41. > :51:47.silver up for grabs. Prepare to make some noise in this house because it
:51:48. > :51:57.is time for the gold medal fight. It is Japan and Columbia deciding the
:51:58. > :52:02.gold and silver here. Yuri Alvear of Colombia, 30 years of age already
:52:03. > :52:10.had a bronze medal from London. She is in her second calibre games.
:52:11. > :52:20.Haruka Tachimoto, so good on away here -- Olympic Games. She had some
:52:21. > :52:24.super quick performances earlier on. She defeated the world number one in
:52:25. > :52:31.her second outing. We thought at that stage that she was headed for a
:52:32. > :52:40.medal and this match. Alvear spent time training in Japan. She has two
:52:41. > :52:41.World Championships next to her name so the credentials of these two are
:52:42. > :52:55.outstanding. Tachimoto only fought twice in 2015,
:52:56. > :53:00.winning both grand slams and already in 2016, a grand slam in Paris. The
:53:01. > :53:04.draw did not do her any favours. She has been pushed to the limit through
:53:05. > :53:12.golden score a couple of times, Tachimoto. Alvear of Columbia might
:53:13. > :53:14.be fresher. But we know that they will fight until the absolute end.
:53:15. > :53:29.-- Columbia. This is going to be two completely
:53:30. > :53:32.different styles, the very stand-up style of Tachimoto, she will be
:53:33. > :53:40.going for the outside leg and you have to watch for the brutality of
:53:41. > :53:45.the Colombian. Straightaway, Tachimoto does not like it. Could
:53:46. > :53:50.you imagine what this would do for Colombia? A gold medal here, it
:53:51. > :53:57.would be the first ever Olympic gold medal in judo for Colombia. Super
:53:58. > :54:02.stuff. She is a great champion. I think she is 32 years of age so
:54:03. > :54:13.probably her last Olympic Games but you never know. 30 years of age,
:54:14. > :54:19.just looking, thank you. 34 probably is a bit too far in Tokyo but you
:54:20. > :54:25.never know with Alvear. We know that Tachimoto will be there in the
:54:26. > :54:29.running for Tokyo, whether she gets selected or not. The selectors do
:54:30. > :54:33.all sorts of different things, as they have done by selecting her here
:54:34. > :54:38.also and she has shown that they have made the right call. A penalty
:54:39. > :54:43.here against Tachimoto but still a long time, just inside three minutes
:54:44. > :54:52.remaining. They are trying to get two hands on around the back. Alvear
:54:53. > :54:58.sort of got ahold. The referee gets involved again and we are back into
:54:59. > :55:02.the middle. The tactic here for Alvear is to pull the head of
:55:03. > :55:08.Tachimoto in and stop her from moving. Tachimoto is best when she
:55:09. > :55:15.is moving. That left hand others will try to keep Alvear out. And
:55:16. > :55:20.there it is, she has scored so many times with that, the snaking
:55:21. > :55:30.technique, going around the outside of the leg. Two minutes 20 remaining
:55:31. > :55:36.of this four-minute contest also the referee does not like that and they
:55:37. > :55:42.moved and go up high. It looked as if Alvear had created some leverage.
:55:43. > :55:48.The coaches with plenty to say in the break. This is where she is
:55:49. > :55:51.best, look at that change of direction and it is going to be a
:55:52. > :56:04.score the wazari. That is all over, I can tell you
:56:05. > :56:12.now. Alvear will not get back up from that. It is going to be a gold
:56:13. > :56:17.medal here. You can see the second going up and the score and it is 20
:56:18. > :56:21.seconds and she has got the ippon! That was absolutely amazing from
:56:22. > :56:27.Tachimoto and what the date she has had. The most amazing run of
:56:28. > :56:33.performances from Tachimoto, all the way through. She defeated the world
:56:34. > :56:40.number one first off and then went all the way through. She beat Laura
:56:41. > :56:42.Vargas Koch in the semifinal and straight through against Alvear and
:56:43. > :56:56.ippon. How good was that? That is the face
:56:57. > :57:00.of an Olympic champion and a very tired face as well. Some of those
:57:01. > :57:07.early round matches went deep into golden score but now she can let it
:57:08. > :57:11.out, the tears from Tachimoto, the Olympic champion. They knew what
:57:12. > :57:17.they were doing, the Japanese selectors. Japan have won almost 30%
:57:18. > :57:21.of all medals ever in Olympic competition. I think she almost
:57:22. > :57:26.thought about jumping into the stands but too much respect for the
:57:27. > :57:30.sport for that. Continuing to bow to everybody including the Japanese
:57:31. > :57:36.commentary team next to us. There are some tears as well because this
:57:37. > :57:41.means a lot. Olympic gold and the disappointment there but with it of
:57:42. > :57:46.course comes Olympic silver for Yuri Alvear. There is the champion.
:57:47. > :57:52.Quite a finish to the women's 70 kilograms judo competition which
:57:53. > :57:57.also provided bronze for Sally Conway, one of four bronze medals if
:57:58. > :58:02.you have just come back in, for bronze medals for Team GB today and
:58:03. > :58:03.two gold medals. We can bring you up-to-date because it has been a
:58:04. > :58:24.wonderful Wednesday. Gold for Joe Clarke in the men's K1,
:58:25. > :58:31.the first Olympics for the man from Stoke and he did the business. Also
:58:32. > :58:36.gold for Jack Laugher and Chris Mears in the three metre men's
:58:37. > :58:40.synchronised springboard final as they made history, best friend and
:58:41. > :58:44.housemates, Commonwealth champions, they won their first medal last in
:58:45. > :58:49.the World Championships and now they are Olympic champions. And those
:58:50. > :58:54.bronze medals, we have shown you Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms
:58:55. > :59:02.judo. She finished ninth four years ago but this time has bronze. Same
:59:03. > :59:05.colour for Steven Scott in the men's double trap, seeing off fellow
:59:06. > :59:13.Briton Tim Kneale in the bronze medal match. He loved it! Chris
:59:14. > :59:21.Froome got the first medal of the day in the time trial. Fabian
:59:22. > :59:29.Cancellara of Switzerland took gold. And the final bronze to bring you up
:59:30. > :59:34.to date, Max Whitlock, the first gymnast from Great Britain on the
:59:35. > :59:43.podium in an Olympics in 108 years for the men, incredible stuff. And a
:59:44. > :59:50.reminder, if you were watching yesterday, we spoke to Mike from the
:59:51. > :59:54.USA. The was saying there was no way that Team USA were going to struggle
:59:55. > :00:01.in a basketball and he is probably right. But at half-time in the
:00:02. > :00:05.Carioca Arena 2 they are 54-49 down against Australia. The coach does
:00:06. > :00:10.not look that happy. Maybe they know they are in a match. Those that you
:00:11. > :00:15.have been asking for basketball, we are now going to deliver the goods
:00:16. > :00:20.for you so let's go over to the Carioca Arena 2 for the superstars,
:00:21. > :00:22.the dream team of the USA taking on Australia, trailing 54-49 at
:00:23. > :00:27.half-time. Joe Ward again. He is operating on
:00:28. > :00:34.the edge of the rule book, Joe Ward. It has been a remarkable first half
:00:35. > :00:43.from Australia, they are leading the United States by five points, they
:00:44. > :00:48.have put the USA under real pressure. Can the US go on with it
:00:49. > :00:53.shall mark will individual talent shines through in the second half?
:00:54. > :00:58.They are being tested for the first time at this Olympic Games in the
:00:59. > :01:02.US, level with Venezuelan at quarter time in the 1st quarter, then they
:01:03. > :01:06.took complete control. Here they are being pushed all the way to
:01:07. > :01:14.half-time. Kevin Durant is yet to get going for the USA. At half-time,
:01:15. > :01:22.Australia have 54, the USA have 49. Men's basketball, the preliminary
:01:23. > :01:25.group A game. They have won their opening two matches, a third win in
:01:26. > :01:34.the quarterfinals is pretty much guaranteed. All set for what is
:01:35. > :01:38.going to be a thrilling 3rd quarter, Australia's defensive pressure has
:01:39. > :01:46.been exemplary. The USA need to step it up, they're shooting has been
:01:47. > :01:55.off, Australia have been fantastic. A big 3rd quarter in store for
:01:56. > :02:01.Australia and the United States. It is the 3rd quarter in the men's
:02:02. > :02:09.basketball, preliminary round between Australia and the USA.
:02:10. > :02:18.DeMarcus Cousins in there to prevent the lay-up from Patty Mills.
:02:19. > :02:24.Australia from the restart... Ron cousins misses it, and eventually
:02:25. > :02:36.gets it in. He just gave up really. Australia's lead is down to three.
:02:37. > :02:40.Dellavedova put it up for Baines, now Australia are missing
:02:41. > :02:46.opportunities. It is the USA, there is little room for error. It has
:02:47. > :02:57.been into an staff, a fast paced game at an extremely high level, --
:02:58. > :03:06.end to end stuff. Australia led by five at half-time. The US are now
:03:07. > :03:13.getting into gear, Kevin Durant 43, knocking it down effortlessly. The
:03:14. > :03:17.USA are level. Is that the moment things really start to turn?
:03:18. > :03:32.Dellavedova putting up a shot after being fouled by elo Anthony. --
:03:33. > :03:43.Carmelo Anthony. Eight points for Kevin Durant,
:03:44. > :03:55.Australia have done so well to keep the US offence quiet. Trying to dish
:03:56. > :04:01.it off for Dellavedova, but leaving it for Cousins. The USA are in
:04:02. > :04:05.front. Taking them less than two minutes of this 3rd quarter to
:04:06. > :04:15.regain the lead. Dellavedova, to Baines. Slowing things right down,
:04:16. > :04:21.Australia, their tactic in the first half. Working to great affect,
:04:22. > :04:26.particularly defensively. Missing shots, that was not happening in the
:04:27. > :04:38.first half, they have not yet scored in this 3rd quarter. The USA on a
:04:39. > :04:46.7-0 run. Irving, with brilliant skills Australia called time down by
:04:47. > :04:50.four, they need to take a breather. Chi reopening has been strong in
:04:51. > :04:57.this 3rd quarter, seven points for him now. -- Kyrie Irving. No way was
:04:58. > :05:04.Dellavedova going to prevent that one from getting in. Much better
:05:05. > :05:08.from the USA point of view, 9-0 to begin the 3rd quarter, they have
:05:09. > :05:25.retaken the lead, and are ahead by four.
:05:26. > :05:36.Keep playing aggressive on the rim. Offensively, get some emotion and
:05:37. > :05:42.move it. Wrap them up! The Australians are fully revved up for
:05:43. > :05:51.this one. They have six of their players playing in the United States
:05:52. > :05:55.for the NBA. Chi reopening is a former team-mate of Matthew
:05:56. > :06:07.Dellavedova. He moved to the Milwaukee Bucks after losing the NBA
:06:08. > :06:12.title. They will be hoping that they can take this one in the second
:06:13. > :06:19.half. A four point lead for the USA, it was a 5-point lead for Australia
:06:20. > :06:22.at half-time. Ingles runs into trouble and gets the pass out to
:06:23. > :06:28.Patty Mills who puts it in brilliantly over the arm of the
:06:29. > :06:34.markers cousins. Patty Mills has had an extremely good game, looking very
:06:35. > :06:40.fired up against the other NBA stars. Dellavedova... Driving the
:06:41. > :06:51.shot away but it was difficult under pressure. A foul called on both
:06:52. > :07:02.good, pleading his innocence, a two-point lead for the US, that was
:07:03. > :07:09.the foul from Bogart on Irving. -- Andrew Bogut. Not happy with the
:07:10. > :07:14.aggressiveness on contact from Dellavedova, the referees know about
:07:15. > :07:23.his displeasure. -- Andrew Bogut. Kevin Durant is yet to get going,
:07:24. > :07:27.they are taking time, they want to slow them down, Australia, keep them
:07:28. > :07:32.outside. Again, it is working on that occasion but the shot clock is
:07:33. > :07:35.running down on Anthony, it was pressure three. Dellavedova picks it
:07:36. > :07:45.up, Patty Mills with a quick passout. Joe Ingles almost putting
:07:46. > :07:49.Australia back in front. Australia regained their defensive pressure
:07:50. > :07:58.which served them so well in the first half, fighting for every ball.
:07:59. > :08:02.Just two points in it here. United States were well clear in their last
:08:03. > :08:09.two games, but here they are being tested. The rebound offensively has
:08:10. > :08:13.been remarkable. That shows how strong the extra alien defence has
:08:14. > :08:27.been. There have been so many shots and follow-up from the US --
:08:28. > :08:38.Australian defence. Andrew Bogut. Joe Ingles plays it
:08:39. > :08:41.off for Andrew Bogut. A patient approach from Australia. Andrew
:08:42. > :08:45.Bogut finishes a wonderful move from Australia. They talked about having
:08:46. > :08:52.movements cutting, that is what Australia did and it opened the gap
:08:53. > :08:56.for Andrew Bogut to finish it off. It is 58-58, Australia level once
:08:57. > :09:02.more. Kevin Durant restores the US lead.
:09:03. > :09:14.Australia had to play the perfect game really if they are to go on and
:09:15. > :09:19.win this. Bairstow leading edge for Ingles -- leaving it for Joe Ingles.
:09:20. > :09:25.That knocks down the long range, too heavy. Australia are keeping up with
:09:26. > :09:33.the USA, they are going toe to toe here. The question is, can they keep
:09:34. > :09:39.it up? Andrew Bogut got in ahead of Cousins, it looks like the foul goes
:09:40. > :09:46.against the USA. Andrew Bogut comes up with a steal, it is a foul on
:09:47. > :09:53.Cousins. Just dragging Andrew Bogut there, that is where contact was
:09:54. > :10:02.made. It is going to be an Australian ball for a personal foul
:10:03. > :10:10.for Cousins. Andrew Bogut to Dellavedova, who
:10:11. > :10:20.lost the ball. It is USA possession, Dellavedova thought it came off an
:10:21. > :10:26.American player last. Play Thompson -- Clay Thompson checking back in
:10:27. > :10:37.for the US, Dellavedova has had a remarkable night with nine assists.
:10:38. > :10:42.Averaging 11.5 assists per game. Just about every minute for
:10:43. > :10:46.Australia as well, he has incredible fitness levels. Thompson with the
:10:47. > :10:50.pressure, that is what he does so well, how many times has he done
:10:51. > :10:54.that for the Golden State Warriors? Taking the pass perfectly, knocking
:10:55. > :11:00.down the treble. Mills emulates Thompson, they do so. The
:11:01. > :11:08.Australians are going blow for blow. Anything you can do, I can do just
:11:09. > :11:13.as well, says Patty Mills. Both teams shooting well from the
:11:14. > :11:22.outside, Anthony runs into trouble with Bairstow. Blocked by Deirdre
:11:23. > :11:33.Jordan. No way that Bairstow was getting that one over him! --
:11:34. > :11:43.DeAndre Jordan. Timing that leap to perfection. Australia still with
:11:44. > :11:52.possession. Dellavedova, it is 63-63. Breaking off for three, that
:11:53. > :12:05.soft target. Thompson to Durand, it is contact, a foul on Andrew Bogut.
:12:06. > :12:11.A bit of toing and froing going on. Kevin Durant, last time he drove,
:12:12. > :12:18.Bairstow took his -- stood his ground but this time, Andrew Bogut
:12:19. > :12:28.moved away, working out if Kevin Durant strew the foul here... --
:12:29. > :12:35.through the foul here. It has been a really intense battle between the
:12:36. > :12:38.two sides. The USA may be slightly off with their shooting, but they
:12:39. > :12:44.have been pressured by fantastic Australian defence. Kevin Durant,
:12:45. > :12:54.hitting it from the foul line, his first attempt up to 11 points. For
:12:55. > :13:00.from 13, not numbers typically associated with Kevin Durant. 100%
:13:01. > :13:13.from the foul line. The USA are leading by two. Andrew Bogut,
:13:14. > :13:17.breaking it off to Mills. Happy to take their time, the Australians.
:13:18. > :13:26.The crew one has a shot from the edge, unsuccessful. The foul is
:13:27. > :13:42.called here -- Andrew Bogut. It is on Cyle Larin. -- it is from Kyle
:13:43. > :13:53.Lowry. Larry on Bairstow, Mills for three, but just off target. Green
:13:54. > :14:00.sees it over the line. They were down by five points at half-time,
:14:01. > :14:09.the USA, now they are trailing in the 3rd quarter. It is a USA ball. A
:14:10. > :14:23.lot of stoppages now for both teams, into that period where things get
:14:24. > :14:33.very intense. Kyle Lowry. Thompson, they shut down that attempt. Lowry,
:14:34. > :14:39.driving straight through, in off the board from Kyle Lowry, the lead is
:14:40. > :14:44.up to four for the USA. Australia have kept in touch, they led
:14:45. > :14:51.throughout a lot of the 2nd quarter, into half-time. Mills, and finishing
:14:52. > :14:52.comfortably. Great movement from the Australians in offence. They find
:14:53. > :15:03.the gap so well. The United States is so difficult to
:15:04. > :15:11.contain with the individual players but Bogut stopped Lowry. Bairstow
:15:12. > :15:16.runs away with it, Mills for three. The fast break is on for the USA,
:15:17. > :15:23.Durant, no foul called but it does not go in. Stolen by Lowry, unfairly
:15:24. > :15:30.says the referee and it is a foul on Lowry.
:15:31. > :15:39.Incredible stuff, end to end. Kevin Durant just running into Bogut,
:15:40. > :15:44.there was nothing called. Durant may have felt he got a foul and put up
:15:45. > :15:50.the shot. The follow-up was unsuccessful as well, look at the
:15:51. > :15:55.desperation from David Anderson. Two minutes 18 to play in this third
:15:56. > :16:02.quarter and the USA getting pushed hard by Australia. Two point in it,
:16:03. > :16:06.the USA have the lead. Bains back on for Australia, Ingles. -- this Aron
:16:07. > :16:30.Baynes. Offensive foul called. A reprieve for the United States.
:16:31. > :16:38.Larry Butler, we have not seen much of him so far, the Chicago Bulls
:16:39. > :16:44.player -- Lowry. Jordan, quickly to birdie at that the quickly to Green.
:16:45. > :16:52.-- quickly to Green. Draymond Green for three and it is tipped away but
:16:53. > :17:00.that is a foul against DeAndre Jordan.
:17:01. > :17:14.It is going to be intentional as well because it is two shots for
:17:15. > :17:18.Aron Baynes. Eight a plastic clap from DeAndre Jordan, that will not
:17:19. > :17:32.endear him to directory a sarcastic -- sarcastic clap. A chance for
:17:33. > :17:37.Australia to go level again. Aron Baynes knocks down the first. He
:17:38. > :17:45.plays for the Detroit Pistons in the USA. He will be very familiar with
:17:46. > :17:52.all of these American players. And not afraid to have a chat either.
:17:53. > :18:02.He is two from two and Australia are at level once more with just over 90
:18:03. > :18:04.seconds left in the third quarter. What a job Andrej Lemanis has done
:18:05. > :18:11.with this team, tactically brilliant. So well marshalled,
:18:12. > :18:17.particularly defensively and in front their movement has been
:18:18. > :18:20.fantastic. Draymond Green leaving it for Klay Thompson, long range
:18:21. > :18:29.attempt and he is normally very good from there. Somehow it is kept in,
:18:30. > :18:35.Lowry. Driving them out to Butler, he has time to set himself but it is
:18:36. > :18:43.short. Picked up by Lowry. Foul called on Baynes.
:18:44. > :18:57.Good offensive rebound for Kyle Lowry. Baynes is in foul trouble
:18:58. > :19:05.here. The fourth personal foul and the fourth team foul for Australia.
:19:06. > :19:13.Tussling with the Andre Jordan. They were talking to each other before.
:19:14. > :19:22.The shot clock was reset. Lowry 43, off target. Both teams struggling
:19:23. > :19:28.somewhat from outside right now. It looked like he was going to the
:19:29. > :19:32.shot. Anderson. Can Australia take the lead going into the third
:19:33. > :19:38.quarter? That would be remarkable. Anderson misses. Even going this
:19:39. > :19:44.blog against the USA has been a fantastic effort from Australia.
:19:45. > :19:51.Greene picks up the basket and the foul. Brilliant from Draymond Green.
:19:52. > :19:56.His future team-mate at the Warriors, Kevin Durant was up and
:19:57. > :20:01.applauding. He took the contact from Bairstow and put up the shot. He
:20:02. > :20:11.will go to the line to add the extra point.
:20:12. > :20:17.The United States leading by three now. Full-court press almost from
:20:18. > :20:28.Klay Thompson. Australia still patient. They are
:20:29. > :20:33.not in any hurry am still well in this contest which is a remarkable
:20:34. > :20:41.feat against the number one team in the world. 14 times gold medallists.
:20:42. > :20:48.Ryan Broekhoff just losing it and Lowry comes away with it. A quick
:20:49. > :20:53.pass to Anthony. He cannot get the three and that is the end of the 3rd
:20:54. > :20:56.quarter. It has been better from the USA. They have outshot Australia
:20:57. > :21:18.21-13 and they are leading, 70-67. We will be back for the 4th quarter.
:21:19. > :21:23.Team USA leading by three points. We are down on Copacabana beach and
:21:24. > :21:28.normally at this time of night there is stuff going on. We have one chap,
:21:29. > :21:35.he has an Australian hat. Are you Australian? I will take that as a
:21:36. > :21:41.no! There are not many people around tonight. Normally we have been
:21:42. > :21:50.having people fishing, people on the beach playing something called
:21:51. > :21:56.fresco ball. I want to bring you that live at some stage but it is
:21:57. > :21:59.not happening tonight. And we don't have Antony Worrall Thompson which
:22:00. > :22:06.is a huge disappointment to so many of you. We always have some circuit
:22:07. > :22:09.training going on but it is obviously weather dependent and
:22:10. > :22:14.tonight it is not happening and even our man with his Australian hat is
:22:15. > :22:17.leaving us. Not much is going on but thankfully there has been loads
:22:18. > :22:24.going on and it has been a great day for Team GB. We have had two gold
:22:25. > :22:29.medals and four bronze medals. They have been a few days when we have
:22:30. > :22:33.thought where they were coming from. Until today, we were leading in the
:22:34. > :22:38.countries that finished in fourth place and missed out on medals. We
:22:39. > :22:45.will have a little headline update if you have just come in. Here are
:22:46. > :22:51.the headlines to tell you where Team GB are today.
:22:52. > :23:03.Gold for Joe Clarke in the men's K1. Gold for Jack Laugher and Chris
:23:04. > :23:10.Mears in the three metres men's synchronised springboard final. A
:23:11. > :23:19.bronze in the judo for Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms. Also bronze for
:23:20. > :23:23.Steven Scott in the men's double trap, beating fellow Brit Tim Kneale
:23:24. > :23:29.in the bronze medal match. The first medal of the day came for Chris
:23:30. > :23:37.Froome, bronze in the time trial this morning. And medal number six,
:23:38. > :23:40.Max Whitlock, the first gymnast in the all-around final on the podium
:23:41. > :23:53.in 108 years. Let's go back to the basketball, we
:23:54. > :24:02.are into the 4th quarter. We can see if Australia, who have just made it
:24:03. > :24:05.level, can they do not quote the unthinkable but many people thought
:24:06. > :24:10.this American side would come nowhere near defeat at this Olympics
:24:11. > :24:17.but we are in the 4th quarter and Australia have just taken the lead.
:24:18. > :24:30.They are leading by two with less than nine minutes to play. Anthony
:24:31. > :24:35.gets the basket. It does count for the US. He picked up a foul from
:24:36. > :24:42.Anderson and Anthony will go to the line to try to put the US back in
:24:43. > :24:46.front. That was the move finished off by Ingles, some great passing
:24:47. > :24:54.from Australia. Ingles is another one of the players based in the US
:24:55. > :25:03.with the Utah Jazz. They have had so much to applaud in this game.
:25:04. > :25:09.And the attempt is missed by Anthony. 72-72. Dellavedova for
:25:10. > :25:23.Ingles. Bairstow. Anderson, thought about the shot.
:25:24. > :25:29.The clock is running down, down to five, Dellavedova goes for it and
:25:30. > :25:34.well short. Good defending from the USA, they forced the error and
:25:35. > :25:38.Australia had nowhere to go. Andrej Lemanis talks about movement but it
:25:39. > :25:44.was a bit lacking then. Just over eight minutes to play. Few would
:25:45. > :25:49.have thought Australia would be in this position, level with the USA
:25:50. > :25:57.and that has gone out and it will be an Australian ball. Durant with the
:25:58. > :26:04.error. Turnover from the US. It was a difficult pass, it must be said,
:26:05. > :26:15.from Irving. Dellavedova. Anderson. He picks up the foul. Kyrie Irving
:26:16. > :26:17.not having the best night of his career with the USA. A third
:26:18. > :26:34.personal foul for him. Ingles. Anderson. Having a remarkable game.
:26:35. > :26:39.The shot clock is down again. Dellavedova as to get this out and
:26:40. > :26:47.it is well short. It does not hit the rim and considered not a shot
:26:48. > :26:54.made so eight shot clock violation. Less than eight minutes to play. The
:26:55. > :26:59.US defence has been pretty good, it must be said. They have forced a
:27:00. > :27:06.couple of errors now. A couple of shot clock violations from
:27:07. > :27:12.Australia. Can the Boomers go on with it? Anthony with the three! He
:27:13. > :27:16.waited and thought about it and said yes, I will take this. Dellavedova
:27:17. > :27:24.for Bairstow and they are back within one.
:27:25. > :27:36.The Australian women's team also in attendance. Anthony. And it is
:27:37. > :27:41.back-to-back triples from Carmelo Anthony and that might be what takes
:27:42. > :27:44.the United States through here, the remarkable shooting from outside and
:27:45. > :27:55.they are leading by four and time-out is called. It is 74-78.
:27:56. > :28:07.Carmelo Anthony, so difficult to stop from outside, he has hit a game
:28:08. > :28:17.high 25 points. That is including seven three pointers.
:28:18. > :28:24.Australia have had little answer to Anthony's shooting from outside.
:28:25. > :28:28.They have done well to stop Durant for most of the game, there has been
:28:29. > :28:33.a running battle between him and Andrew Bogut. A real physical,
:28:34. > :28:39.inquisitive encounter, great intensity from both teams here.
:28:40. > :28:43.Australia have gone toe to toe with the United States fought so long now
:28:44. > :28:46.but could this just be the moment where the US start to pull away? --
:28:47. > :29:05.for so long. The United States will be looking to
:29:06. > :29:11.finish strongly but Australia have kept up with them the whole way up
:29:12. > :29:15.until this point. Dellavedova has been providing the assists, 11 for
:29:16. > :29:21.him now which is about what he has averaged in the first two games.
:29:22. > :29:26.Another strong performance, five rebounds and five points, he is a
:29:27. > :29:34.tireless worker. I don't think he has had a break yet, he has played
:29:35. > :29:38.every single minute. Australia get things restarted in this final
:29:39. > :29:46.quarter, seven minutes to play and they are down by four. They lead by
:29:47. > :29:51.five at half-time. Ingles insightful Mills, almost loses it and puts up
:29:52. > :29:54.the shot and it is well off the mark -- inside for Mills. Irving to
:29:55. > :30:08.Thompson. They have defended extremely well,
:30:09. > :30:12.Australia, and kept the USA at bay, particularly from inside but when
:30:13. > :30:17.you have shooters like Durant, who has not been at his best but Anthony
:30:18. > :30:21.and Thompson, it is a difficult task to keep them completely quiet.
:30:22. > :30:30.Durant for three points. He has been off tonight, Kevin Durant.
:30:31. > :30:46.Thompson just holding onto the ball. Happy slowing down the pace, the US.
:30:47. > :30:53.Irving, getting the screen from Jordan, and knocked down by Currie
:30:54. > :31:04.Irving, the lead is down to six now. Dellavedova, from the foul line,
:31:05. > :31:09.that was brilliant -- Kyrie Irving. Amongst Australia's best, as he has
:31:10. > :31:13.been in the opening games. Thompson in for the rebound, he files his
:31:14. > :31:23.opponent and it will be an Australia ball. He's been in the thick of it,
:31:24. > :31:28.Klay Thompson, scratches on his arm. Given by the Australians, that's how
:31:29. > :31:31.they usually play, a fantastic defensive tactical now is added to
:31:32. > :31:36.their game. The offensive movement is impressive. The way they
:31:37. > :31:42.performed in their opening two games, you would have to say that
:31:43. > :31:53.Australia is within medal contention. Patty Mills, for free...
:31:54. > :32:05.-- three. Has not been off target too many times, Mills in this one.
:32:06. > :32:11.He goes for free here... The United States lead is out to seven. They
:32:12. > :32:20.went down by five at half-time, but they are taking control in the final
:32:21. > :32:31.turn for the US. Dellavedova... Andrew Bogut decides not to take the
:32:32. > :32:36.shot. Aron Baynes cannot make the easy attempt, they are starting to
:32:37. > :32:45.come away from them... And neither is it off to Thompson for the corner
:32:46. > :32:48.three, he off target. Klay Thompson, missing an open three from the
:32:49. > :32:57.corner. -- he is off target. Getting the
:32:58. > :33:03.screen and the ball back, that is brilliant from Andrew Bogut and
:33:04. > :33:08.Mills. They combine so well, the
:33:09. > :33:13.Australians. Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Dellavedova as well, it is
:33:14. > :33:17.great stuff to watch at times. Five points is the difference. Kyrie
:33:18. > :33:22.Irving gets it in off the glass, a tight angle as well.
:33:23. > :33:27.Four minutes to play, a 7-point lead for the USA.
:33:28. > :33:33.Australia need a strong finish. Patty Mills... Dropping through off
:33:34. > :33:38.the board. Great run, a time out call.
:33:39. > :33:49.Australia 80-85 USA. Patty Mills is having a fantastic
:33:50. > :33:56.night for the Australians, 26 points for Patty Mills. A team high school,
:33:57. > :34:02.only Anthony has scored more than him with 28 in the game. A brilliant
:34:03. > :34:13.movement between Mills and Andrew Bogut. Look at him go. Aron Baynes
:34:14. > :34:18.provides assistance in the middle, the Australians have so much to be
:34:19. > :34:24.happy about. Few, if any, would have expected them to push the USA this
:34:25. > :34:32.far. Few would have considered Australia medal contenders, but here
:34:33. > :34:46.they are. Throw it, curl it, then to the quarterback. The USA, looking to
:34:47. > :34:50.finished wrongly. Make it three wins out of three -- looking to finish
:34:51. > :34:54.strongly. It is not over yet for Australia,
:34:55. > :34:58.still it would be their first loss. If it does not come about, they
:34:59. > :35:06.would be very proud, their performance has been remarkable.
:35:07. > :35:12.It's the brilliance of Carmelo Anthony that pushed the USA ahead.
:35:13. > :35:22.18 three pointers, eight, rather, not 18.
:35:23. > :35:31.Anthony again, that is nine. The lead out for the USA.
:35:32. > :35:45.Just keeping Australia at arms distance. Dellavedova, gets the
:35:46. > :35:51.foul, it is on Kyrie Irving. Three from Anthony. He has the
:35:52. > :36:00.hothead for the United States. 31 points four, low Anthony. Nine of
:36:01. > :36:06.those triples. -- that one points for Anthony.
:36:07. > :36:16.He has struggled in this final turn, Patty Mills, still be top scorer for
:36:17. > :36:20.Australia. 26 points for him. Kyrie Irving, driving but no way through
:36:21. > :36:28.in the middle, the pass goes astray but a foul is called on Dellavedova.
:36:29. > :36:40.Trying to stop Jordan from getting to the ball. Fouled in doing so.
:36:41. > :36:45.Australia doing so well to stop those shots from being made inside.
:36:46. > :36:50.It is a tactic they brought into the game, and executed it well.
:36:51. > :36:54.Individual abilities of the USA, especially from their three points
:36:55. > :37:02.from Anthony, might take them through. Thompson with the jump
:37:03. > :37:07.shot, and again this is the best game for Klay Thompson by any
:37:08. > :37:18.stretch. Shooting at 39% from the field, as Australia get the deficit
:37:19. > :37:25.back with Dellavedova. Kevin Durant to Kyrie Irving. Only six points in
:37:26. > :37:32.it, there is still hope for the boomers. Two minutes 30 seconds left
:37:33. > :37:39.to play, the USA using up the clock. It's an 8-point game now. They have
:37:40. > :37:44.wrestled control back, the USA. Down by five at half-time. Down in the
:37:45. > :37:58.third and fourth quarters. Patty Mills... Picking up the foul. Klay
:37:59. > :38:08.Thompson... They need a big finish here. This team will still have
:38:09. > :38:17.belief, but it is a tough task. The 15th foul from the USA. Two minutes
:38:18. > :38:30.11 seconds left to play. Jordan takes a breather. Patty Mills goes
:38:31. > :38:41.to the foul line, with two shots. Brian broke off checks in for
:38:42. > :38:46.Australia. -- Ryan Broekhoff. Because these teams are in the same
:38:47. > :38:49.group, if they both qualify for the quarterfinals, and are in first and
:38:50. > :38:54.second place, they would meet until the final. You might even consider
:38:55. > :38:59.this could be a gold medal match. Still a long way to go. Still have
:39:00. > :39:06.to finish this one! Australia are six points behind with two minutes
:39:07. > :39:11.11 seconds left in this game. It is a position they probably would not
:39:12. > :39:16.have taken before it started, Kyrie Irving puts it up but was
:39:17. > :39:20.unsuccessful. Patty Mills reduces the deficit to four. Less than two
:39:21. > :39:31.minutes to play. The leaf on the Australian bench. -- belief. George,
:39:32. > :39:38.not taking the shot. The US, winding down the clock. It is a slender
:39:39. > :39:46.lead, particularly by their standards. Irving breaks three, that
:39:47. > :39:52.is what they call in America clutch. Under pressure, the shot clock
:39:53. > :39:56.winding down, and he knocks down three with ease. Dellavedova to
:39:57. > :40:01.Patty Mills. Dellavedova is there. It turned out to be an assist for
:40:02. > :40:08.Dellavedova. Five points in it. 20 to play. The USA will soak up every
:40:09. > :40:15.second. They have been in contest here. Thompson keeps it in... Kevin
:40:16. > :40:25.Durant with a quick pass out, Patty Mills has the steal. Mills can't
:40:26. > :40:29.believe it, it was so close. Dellavedova comes in at the
:40:30. > :40:40.opportunity then. Just putting it back in. Five points in it now. One
:40:41. > :40:46.minute seven seconds left to play. It's a story from the ages for
:40:47. > :40:51.Australia, whatever happens here. Anthony does not go for the three,
:40:52. > :40:55.pressured by Andrew Bogut. Too much to go around, but he tries. The shot
:40:56. > :41:01.clock winding down, no choice but what a rebound from the USA, that
:41:02. > :41:06.could be so important with the clock ticking down. They pick up the foul,
:41:07. > :41:13.that's on Ingles. 21 offensive rebounds from the US. They might say
:41:14. > :41:21.it could be the area we lost it... If they do, it's not over yet. Five
:41:22. > :41:30.points in it. 51 seconds left to play. The USA looking at the clock,
:41:31. > :41:37.they've not done that in the final turn at any game at the Olympics
:41:38. > :41:41.yet. Unbeaten for so long, never lost to Australia in the major
:41:42. > :41:46.competition. The clock is running down on them. I'm sure they know it,
:41:47. > :41:51.it will be a shot clock violation on the USA. Its Australian possession,
:41:52. > :42:01.it could still be done with 36 seconds left. Five points in it.
:42:02. > :42:07.What a grandstand finish we could have here, Australia has pushed USA
:42:08. > :42:15.all the way. It might have been an intentional foul from, low
:42:16. > :42:21.Anthony... -- from Carmelo Anthony. If so, that would be massive, two
:42:22. > :42:34.shots for Australia and the ball back. The referee was pointing at a
:42:35. > :42:40.shot clock violation. What a tough encounter this has been for the USA.
:42:41. > :42:44.The coach was expecting it. With the quality of this Australian team, it
:42:45. > :42:58.will be Australian possession. 36 seconds left to go. It is a 5-point
:42:59. > :43:07.game. Wins by 57 and 44 points, it's an arrow margin here for the United
:43:08. > :43:12.States. -- a narrow margin. Pressure from Thompson, and Ingles. Doesn't
:43:13. > :43:20.drop for him, rebounding from the USA. They get the foul from Kevin
:43:21. > :43:28.Durant. Patty Mills, rather, the contact was on Kevin Durant. 27.8
:43:29. > :43:32.seconds, even those tenths of seconds could be important at the
:43:33. > :43:50.end of this game. Jordan takes a breather. Australia need the ball,
:43:51. > :44:00.five points behind. Pressure from Dellavedova. Just trying to stop the
:44:01. > :44:03.clock now. It's getting to the stage where the alleyway Australia can win
:44:04. > :44:10.is to foul their opponents, hope they missed the free throws, stop
:44:11. > :44:13.the clock if you seconds, then go the other end and make sure that
:44:14. > :44:15.they score. There is still the chance, but it gets a bit harder at
:44:16. > :44:36.this stage. Kyrie Irving, the player they wanted to
:44:37. > :44:46.foul. Jordan is off the court. Kyrie Irving misses. Well, some hope for
:44:47. > :44:50.Australia still. A 6-point gap. Certainly capable of pulling that
:44:51. > :44:59.back, Australia. Seven would be more than two baskets. Gets down on the
:45:00. > :45:00.second attempt. We have a 6-point game, time-out with 27 seconds left
:45:01. > :45:05.to play. The final instructions for now from
:45:06. > :45:47.Mike Krzyzewski and Andrej Lemanis. STUDIO: We're going to state with
:45:48. > :45:51.this until the end of this match but we have Tim Vickery with us so if
:45:52. > :45:54.you have any questions you would like to send through to ask you
:45:55. > :46:00.about Brazil or the Olympics and how they have gone down here, the
:46:01. > :46:05.legacy, how much has been spent, how the locals feel, send them through
:46:06. > :46:16.on twitter or use the hashtag ABC Rio 2016 and we will put some of
:46:17. > :46:22.those two team -- EPC. -- BBC. And maybe get some reflections on
:46:23. > :46:30.Raffaella Silber winning the gold medal -- Rafaela Silva. And we will
:46:31. > :46:32.have some beach volleyball in about 15 minutes time but back to the
:46:33. > :46:45.basketball first. COMMENTATOR: Australia restart.
:46:46. > :46:49.Mills might be for three points, a difficult effort under pressure and
:46:50. > :46:58.look at the commitment from the players. No side ready to give any
:46:59. > :47:10.inch at all. It is going down to the wire here. Dellavedova is not one to
:47:11. > :47:14.stop. George was driven into the photographers. The United States
:47:15. > :47:16.leading by six. They are looking a bit more relaxed, a few less
:47:17. > :47:44.frustrated faces. Six points in it, 20 seconds left,
:47:45. > :47:50.it is still doable for Australia. Pushing the United States all the
:47:51. > :47:55.way to the last few seconds. There has been some expert shooting from
:47:56. > :48:01.Irving and Anthony which has pushed the United States into the lead.
:48:02. > :48:11.Carmelo Anthony with a game-high 31 points. Including an impressive nine
:48:12. > :48:16.three pointers. They have managed to keep the United States quiet,
:48:17. > :48:21.particularly on the inside, in the paint. The Australians have
:48:22. > :48:25.dominated defensively and put great pressure on the US offence but even
:48:26. > :48:34.still, the United States are ahead here. Not the best game for Klay
:48:35. > :48:43.Thompson. Mike Krzyzewski hoping his side can now see it out. 22nd left
:48:44. > :48:50.the United States ball, Australia looking to foul. Dellavedova felt he
:48:51. > :48:57.almost got the ball. 17 seconds left. Kyrie Irving will go to the
:48:58. > :49:09.line to try to extend the lead and maybe even put it beyond the reach
:49:10. > :49:16.of Australia. The player born in Melbourne. Had history been
:49:17. > :49:27.different, you might have even played for Australia. His dad played
:49:28. > :49:30.for the Bendigo Spirit. Now he is looking to lead the United States to
:49:31. > :49:38.victory over Australia and eight points is the difference now. Ryan
:49:39. > :49:43.Broekhoff for three points but not successful and that might be it.
:49:44. > :49:49.They have done remarkably well to push the USA this far. They led by
:49:50. > :49:55.five points at half-time. They even lead in the final term but the
:49:56. > :50:02.quality of the American offence has shone through in this second half.
:50:03. > :50:11.They have outshot Australia 26-21. Joe Ingles has fouled out. Seven
:50:12. > :50:15.points for him come three rebound and an assist. He has worked
:50:16. > :50:23.extremely hard, particularly defensively. Six and a half seconds
:50:24. > :50:37.to play as Goulding checks back in. Kevin Durant is at the line. Durant
:50:38. > :50:43.successful with the first from the line and the USA are going to secure
:50:44. > :50:49.victory with a third straight win but by far their most hard-fought.
:50:50. > :50:53.Two from two from the line and the clock will play down, Dellavedova
:50:54. > :50:57.might go for another effort before the buzzer. That is the final buzzer
:50:58. > :51:02.and what a performance from Australia. They worked so hard and
:51:03. > :51:06.pushed the United States but in the end the USA have come through.
:51:07. > :51:16.88-98. The least surprising thing you will
:51:17. > :51:20.here all night is that Team USA are still unbeaten in this Olympic
:51:21. > :51:24.competition and somebody has sent me through a stat which I have not
:51:25. > :51:28.checked but it sounds plausible so I will tell you anyway. A journalist
:51:29. > :51:36.has tweeted that the Americans record in Olympic basketball over
:51:37. > :51:41.the years now is played 138, won 133, which is probably why they are
:51:42. > :51:47.favourites again even though they are without some of their big stars.
:51:48. > :51:50.Although quite a few NBA stars in that Australian team and they look
:51:51. > :51:54.certain to get through to the knockout stages of the basketball.
:51:55. > :52:03.As the commonest, delighted to say that Tim Vickery has joined us here.
:52:04. > :52:07.What a studio! I can confirm this is not Whitley Bay! It is Rio de
:52:08. > :52:11.Janeiro. I know it does not feel like the tropics but this is
:52:12. > :52:18.Copacabana. We have been needing that all night, even when I got the
:52:19. > :52:23.coconut out people were doubting it. Loads of questions coming in. First
:52:24. > :52:27.your assessment, you live here and you have been here for a long time
:52:28. > :52:33.and you understand the Brazilian psyche. I'm trying, even after 22
:52:34. > :52:39.years! It is hard for us to turn up and explain to people at home what
:52:40. > :52:45.it's like but how have the Olympus gone down so far for the people in
:52:46. > :52:48.Rio and also Brazil? To take you back for years, I came over to
:52:49. > :52:53.London but I made sure I was back here in Rio for the end, the closing
:52:54. > :52:57.ceremony when Rio becomes the next Olympic city. And in the closing
:52:58. > :53:01.ceremony, Rio at a few minutes to present itself to the world and I
:53:02. > :53:04.thought I would go down to street level and wander around my block to
:53:05. > :53:11.see what the reaction is from the local people, about my city being
:53:12. > :53:15.the Olympic city. I live in a nice neighbourhood, 25 bars, not one was
:53:16. > :53:23.showing the rear part of the closing ceremony. Why? Because two Rio teams
:53:24. > :53:27.were playing football in the Brazilian First Division. That
:53:28. > :53:32.really shows you firstly the challenge of this Olympics, there is
:53:33. > :53:36.so little Olympic tradition in this part of the world. This is the first
:53:37. > :53:42.time we have at the Olympics in South America. The king of the
:53:43. > :53:46.Olympics is track and field. That is the prestige event. Who is the
:53:47. > :53:51.fastest man in the world? The fastest woman? Who can jump highest
:53:52. > :53:54.and furthest? I did a TV programme last week with a man who will be
:53:55. > :53:59.commentating on that for Brazilian TV and we agreed that you could stop
:54:00. > :54:03.100 people on the street here and ask them for a name of a track and
:54:04. > :54:08.field athlete and the vast majority would not get beyond Usain Bolt.
:54:09. > :54:12.That is the challenge the Olympics has had here. And it helps to
:54:13. > :54:16.explain why there is so much emphasis on the football tournament
:54:17. > :54:23.and why Ozil's disappointing displays are important. -- Brazil's
:54:24. > :54:29.disappointing displays. We have not shown that much football yet. Brazil
:54:30. > :54:33.drew with Iraqi. The only thing that I have seen taking football off the
:54:34. > :54:38.front pages was Rafaela Silva winning in the judo. Because
:54:39. > :54:43.football is so dominant. It is and every TV executive tells me the same
:54:44. > :54:48.thing I heard this last week from a TV senior. Deep down, Brazilians are
:54:49. > :54:53.not that much into sport. They are into winning. That is why Neymar at
:54:54. > :55:00.the moment is getting such stick because Brazil are not winning.
:55:01. > :55:05.Especially when they have less gold in the tournament so far than Fiji.
:55:06. > :55:11.It also helps to explain that phrase that Brazilians are more interested
:55:12. > :55:17.in winning than sport, it explains why Rafaela Silva is so important.
:55:18. > :55:24.It is the Christine Ohuruogu of Rio 2016, the local girl made good. It
:55:25. > :55:31.gets on the front page. And there is a little English angle to this
:55:32. > :55:35.story. She comes from the City Of God which is a poor neighbourhood
:55:36. > :55:41.and not far from the Olympic Park. She got into judo as a kid because
:55:42. > :55:49.there is a social project they're called Reaction which was started by
:55:50. > :55:55.a former Judeo -- judo athlete who was born in Oxford. His father was
:55:56. > :56:00.doing a doctorate at Oxford University at the time when he was
:56:01. > :56:04.born. He is 100% Brazilian but born in England and whenever I meet him
:56:05. > :56:10.we greet as compatriots. You can trace the line from Oxford to the
:56:11. > :56:16.City Of God to the gold medal podium. It is an amazing story. The
:56:17. > :56:22.guy in my hotel, that is the only time he has not talked about
:56:23. > :56:26.football, when she won. Quite a few questions about tickets, what is the
:56:27. > :56:33.situation like with the locals? Why so many empty seats? Even the
:56:34. > :56:38.Olympic Park at times. Does it go back to the athletics again? There
:56:39. > :56:42.is very little tradition in a lot of these sports. They will turn out if
:56:43. > :56:46.there is a Brazilian with a chance of a medal. But for a lot of these
:56:47. > :56:51.sport there is little tradition and also you have to remember that this
:56:52. > :56:56.country, when it was awarded the Olympics, the idea was to showcase
:56:57. > :57:01.an economy on the rise but boom has turned to depression which is part
:57:02. > :57:04.of the controversial backdrop to the Games, people questioning if Brazil
:57:05. > :57:09.should be doing this. And transport as well, it is a big city, a
:57:10. > :57:14.sprawling Olympics, it is not easy to get to some of these venues. I
:57:15. > :57:18.heard some horror stories from the night before last with people who
:57:19. > :57:24.had stayed until the end of the swimming. In order to get the
:57:25. > :57:28.underground back, first you have got to get a bus so it is a long
:57:29. > :57:33.journey, a bus ride to the underground station. People got the
:57:34. > :57:37.bus and the station was closed. Stranded in the middle of nowhere
:57:38. > :57:43.will stop there is the difficulties of transport and getting around the
:57:44. > :57:47.city. Brazil is a society where they like to do things at the last
:57:48. > :57:52.minute, even buying tickets. There was a splurge in sales after the
:57:53. > :57:55.opening ceremony. I think the organisers are quite happy with how
:57:56. > :58:00.things have gone because they have hit their targets. To compare it
:58:01. > :58:04.with London, with all of that culture that the British public have
:58:05. > :58:08.being great spectators, I think it was always a bit unfair. And the
:58:09. > :58:12.cost is an issue as well, some locals saying they might be able to
:58:13. > :58:16.buy one ticket but if they are going to one event, they will go to
:58:17. > :58:22.something later in the games. Yes and remember there is a depression
:58:23. > :58:25.on so cost it an issue. Now that the Brazilian women in the couple have
:58:26. > :58:29.started so well, suddenly people are trying to buy tickets for the final
:58:30. > :58:39.but that is how it works around here. And one of the other thing
:58:40. > :58:43.that somebody who lives here said to me, the concern they had was that
:58:44. > :58:47.there has been a new Metro line open up but only journalists and
:58:48. > :58:50.accredited media can use it. If it is available for local if you have a
:58:51. > :58:55.ticket but not the normal population. The big logistical
:58:56. > :58:58.nightmare of these games is transport, it is the thing that has
:58:59. > :59:04.been most worrying the organising committee. Can they get the athlete
:59:05. > :59:08.and fans around? The schools are on holiday, a lot of the government
:59:09. > :59:12.buildings, nobody is there. They are trying to cut down transport as much
:59:13. > :59:18.as possible in order to facilitate the smooth running. And a lot of
:59:19. > :59:23.people asking about legacy. When we look back at London now, we think it
:59:24. > :59:26.was a huge success not just from a medal 's perspective but the way it
:59:27. > :59:32.was run and how other countries looked back on it. In four years, is
:59:33. > :59:36.we are in Tokyo having this conversation, and I'm asking about
:59:37. > :59:37.the success of these games, how do you think they will be looked back
:59:38. > :59:45.on? I think the city has more from the
:59:46. > :59:50.Olympics than it got from the World Cup. There have been improvements in
:59:51. > :59:54.public transport. Remember the wave of protests in 2013? That started
:59:55. > :59:58.about the issue of public transport. The World Cup had promised so much
:59:59. > :00:02.on that issue and not delivered anything. In terms of the Olympics,
:00:03. > :00:06.you had to improve transport just in order to have the games. You had to
:00:07. > :00:16.extend the subway system and have improvements on for sport. There has
:00:17. > :00:19.been some legacy. It could have been much better but there has been some
:00:20. > :00:21.legacy. In terms of the sporting culture of Brazil, I do think there
:00:22. > :00:24.will be an inspirational effect. Brazil should be much, much better
:00:25. > :00:28.in athletics than it is. The mere fact of having the best athletes in
:00:29. > :00:32.the world, I think it will have an inspirational effect. The problem
:00:33. > :00:37.is, will there be the facilities around to catch those people who
:00:38. > :00:41.have been inspired to take up sport? And that, unfortunately, I very much
:00:42. > :00:45.doubt. One other one, which I wanted us to add other people might be
:00:46. > :00:50.interested, the weather. Stop laughing! I know we are in Brazil,
:00:51. > :00:54.but have I come thoroughly unprepared? Somebody said to me,
:00:55. > :00:58.this is the only time that courts have been worn on Copacabana Beach!
:00:59. > :01:02.The World Cup got lucky two years ago because it was hot. The year
:01:03. > :01:06.before there was the visit of the Pope and the meeting of the Catholic
:01:07. > :01:10.youth, they were very, very unlucky because it tipped it down. Rio in
:01:11. > :01:16.the rain does not have a great deal to recommend it. The forecast looks
:01:17. > :01:19.as if we are going to be lucky. Next week at the moment the forecast has
:01:20. > :01:22.got the temperatures in the mid-teens and son. In my shallow and
:01:23. > :01:26.superficial mind I have always believed that the success of this
:01:27. > :01:31.event, the weather is crucial. Those TV images that are broadcasting
:01:32. > :01:35.back, they look so good, Rio is so beautiful in the sunshine but not
:01:36. > :01:41.quite so beautiful today. It is always a pleasure to talk to you,
:01:42. > :01:45.thanks to your time. You can tell it is not Rio weather, because even the
:01:46. > :01:48.beach volleyball stars are, not entirely covered up, but wearing
:01:49. > :01:54.more than you would normally expect them to. Live on BBC Four, this is
:01:55. > :01:57.team USA taking on the Smith. Kerri Walsh Jennings a bit of a legend in
:01:58. > :02:02.beach volleyball, everybody knows her, she's a three-time Olympic gold
:02:03. > :02:04.medallist, going for another one, taking on Switzerland. Commentary
:02:05. > :02:28.from the arena just down the other end of Copacabana comes from Brit.
:02:29. > :02:33.April transitions, puts it away, quick Time out by the Swiss. The USA
:02:34. > :03:31.leads 3-0 in the first set. The Swiss trying to gain their
:03:32. > :03:36.composure. Against a very tough and very daunting Walsh Jennings and
:03:37. > :04:01.Ross of America. Just long. It's a good decision by
:04:02. > :04:06.Isabelle Forrer, just missed. But of all beach volleyball venue here in
:04:07. > :04:13.Rio de Janeiro, seats 12,000 on the western edge of Copacabana. April
:04:14. > :04:21.Ross just missing along. The US leads 4-1 here in certain number
:04:22. > :04:26.one. April has been voted the best server three times -- set number
:04:27. > :04:32.one. She has a wicked jump topspin but has currently been using her
:04:33. > :04:42.jump flow. More often. Little cobra poke. Using just her fingertips to
:04:43. > :04:54.get it out of reach. Out of reach of Forrer.
:04:55. > :05:37.Misses just long, Verge-Depre. Side switch, 6-1 the USA leads.
:05:38. > :05:53.Walsh Jennings... April Ross. This team defence is in absolute sink.
:05:54. > :06:04.There is not a lot of space for teams to score against them.
:06:05. > :06:15.LAUGHTER Their play is in total sink, their
:06:16. > :06:20.high-fives on the other hand could use some work, I'm sure that the
:06:21. > :06:26.least of their concerns! 8-1 B USA leads. -- the USA.
:06:27. > :06:42.Depre scores. Walsh Jennings made the right move on this. Just glanced
:06:43. > :06:46.off the hand. Kind of got to a depth where it is a hard decision whether
:06:47. > :06:54.to dig a ball underhand or over hand when it is right at your chest.
:06:55. > :06:59.Squirrelly paths. But Kerri puts it away.
:07:00. > :07:19.Forrer was there. Down in the upper arm.
:07:20. > :07:52.Walsh Jennings goes off Depre. Depre only 24 years old, Isabelle Forrer
:07:53. > :08:10.is 34. Got it down the line! Switch sides.
:08:11. > :08:14.10-4. The US leads. Switch sides on multiples of seven full of us to
:08:15. > :08:21.Macs that is, if it goes to a third and deciding set, that is only
:08:22. > :08:22.played to 15. The teams switch on multiples of five. -- the first two
:08:23. > :08:34.sets. Aggressive set by April Ross pays
:08:35. > :08:40.off. Since Kerri Walsh Jennings is six foot three. They call her six
:08:41. > :08:54.feet of sunshine. Even when the sun is not out here on
:08:55. > :09:02.Copacabana Beach. April Ross misses Short.
:09:03. > :09:11.Quite the temperature drop. Today, as opposed to previous days here at
:09:12. > :09:20.the Olympics. Kerri Walsh Jennings scores quickly down the line.
:09:21. > :09:40.She had to go fast. The Swiss were in an angled the fence. She does it.
:09:41. > :09:45.-- were in an angled defence. Depre misses wide. Sometimes when you hear
:09:46. > :09:55.the nobody call and you know that the blocker is pulling, it causes a
:09:56. > :09:58.bit of frantic play. That's exactly what team USA caused there. Unforced
:09:59. > :10:05.error, and then they keep it simple on their side of the net.
:10:06. > :10:09.April Ross, good vision, Kerri Walsh Jennings giving her the nobody call.
:10:10. > :10:20.Great placement, good hand. That set tailed off the net just a
:10:21. > :10:37.bit at the end. Great feet, great footwork. By April Ross.
:10:38. > :10:46.Anouk Verge-Depre blasting a ball. Cool aerial shot of the beach
:10:47. > :10:55.volleyball venue here on the western edge of Copacabana. Knock all pokey
:10:56. > :11:01.deep corner, Kerri Walsh Jennings scores. -- knock or pokey. That is
:11:02. > :11:39.our first technical time-out, 15-6 the USA leads.
:11:40. > :11:53.The Americans have been incredibly efficient here in certain number
:11:54. > :12:03.one. -- set number one. The rain has stopped.
:12:04. > :12:29.The Americans looking to bring the heat.
:12:30. > :12:36.Verge-Depre with a swift block, it cuts. It cuts the American lead by
:12:37. > :12:49.one. Fighting off a tough stuff, is Kerri
:12:50. > :12:58.Walsh Jennings, high in line. -- toughs serve. It's good.
:12:59. > :13:23.Verge-Depre gets her second block of the match. One against April Ross.
:13:24. > :13:35.And one against Kerri Walsh Jennings.
:13:36. > :13:41.Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross play at such a high level, it's
:13:42. > :13:46.difficult to play against and stay disciplined.
:13:47. > :14:00.Sometimes you feel like you have to do more, more than you can do at the
:14:01. > :14:01.moment. Verge-Depre staying really disciplined in that block, low and
:14:02. > :14:20.over. Isabelle Forrer, gaining some
:14:21. > :14:24.confidence for the Swiss. They have strong a couple of points together,
:14:25. > :14:27.sliding into Kerri Walsh Jennings's rests away on that all add putting
:14:28. > :15:00.it away down the line herself. What a rally! Fighting off an
:15:01. > :15:07.extremely tough serve, Ross and Walsh Jennings pulling up an
:15:08. > :15:21.incredible set from her knees. Staying in the play, and here's an
:15:22. > :15:24.unforced error. It is an aggressive set, but to aggressive against a
:15:25. > :15:36.blocker like Kerri Walsh Jennings. Great dig and put away by April
:15:37. > :16:08.Ross. Isabelle Forrer, sweet it'll cut
:16:09. > :16:13.shot just out of the reach of April Ross. We switch sides, USA lead to
:16:14. > :16:27.17-11 here in set number one. Depre misses long, good leave by the
:16:28. > :16:57.Americans. US goes after Isabelle Forrer that
:16:58. > :17:06.time. And that is what forehead is known for. Her line shot is clean.
:17:07. > :17:18.Over the top of both defenders goes Kerri Walsh Jennings.
:17:19. > :17:36.Off the hands of Anouk Verge-Depre. Walsh Jennings down the line, a slow
:17:37. > :17:41.death there for the Swiss. USA have their first set 20-12. They go after
:17:42. > :17:45.Isabelle Forrer again, off the hands of Kerri Walsh Jennings. Points West
:17:46. > :18:06.is -- Swiss. What they set out of the net by
:18:07. > :18:16.April Ross. That patience and that skill. It is quite impressive. The
:18:17. > :18:22.Americans have a lot of support here tonight in pool C action of women's
:18:23. > :18:29.beach volleyball. USA take the first set 21-13.
:18:30. > :18:36.And we will be back for the second set in a moment. Over on BBC One,
:18:37. > :18:39.big match, crucial one, actually, in the men's hockey, Team GB take on
:18:40. > :18:43.Australia. I thought we were going to get a goal there while we were
:18:44. > :18:47.showing you! It is goalless into the third quarter of that match.
:18:48. > :18:52.Australia have lost both their games so far, so this is an important one,
:18:53. > :19:00.and it will be crucial, quite important to see the second-half
:19:01. > :19:05.here, that is on BBC One at the moment. On the website, you can
:19:06. > :19:08.watch a spot of table tennis. This is the bronze medal match for the
:19:09. > :19:12.women, we will be there a little later. You can book yourselves in if
:19:13. > :19:22.you fancy a ding-dong in the ping-pong. The gold medal matches
:19:23. > :19:31.coming up at 1.30 your time, so you will see that, we will leave the
:19:32. > :19:36.beach volleyball to watch that. Team USA doing what we thought they would
:19:37. > :19:40.do. Doing well against the Swiss. If they win this one, that is another
:19:41. > :20:00.victory in the bag. Backhand flip on that, takes it with
:20:01. > :20:02.the right hand, going to the left. Isabelle Forrer trying to do the
:20:03. > :20:17.same. Kerri Walsh Jennings. I believe that is her third block of
:20:18. > :20:29.the match. The Americans have gone back after
:20:30. > :21:04.Anouk Verge-Depre. Just long. Hammering is April Ross. Ross hits
:21:05. > :21:12.such a heavy ball, and she was incomplete rhythm on that pass by
:21:13. > :21:17.Kerri Walsh Jennings. -- she was in complete with. Kerri Walsh Jennings
:21:18. > :21:21.suffered a shoulder injury during the beginning part of this
:21:22. > :21:29.qualification period which required Ross to hit an two quite often, and
:21:30. > :21:34.Kerri are bit of the physical load in that regard. And all that has
:21:35. > :21:43.done is that has turned into yet another weapon for the Americans.
:21:44. > :21:49.They saw it as a bonus to learn how to win within the limitations, and
:21:50. > :21:53.now that everybody is healthy and back 100%, they now have more tools
:21:54. > :22:31.in that tool box, and they are pulling them all out here in Rio.
:22:32. > :22:38.Verge-Depre trying to come up with a quick answer before time runs out on
:22:39. > :22:41.this thing. Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross lead 4-1 here in the
:22:42. > :22:48.second set, the Swiss took an early time-out in set number one as well.
:22:49. > :22:54.They don't quite have an answer yet. Pretty high line shot by Anouk
:22:55. > :22:59.Verge-Depre. The Swiss looking to get something
:23:00. > :23:26.going here in set number two. April Ross Yeses wide. -- misses
:23:27. > :23:43.wide. We switch sides at 4-3, team United States is up.
:23:44. > :23:54.Forrer ripping an two. It is an awkward move, especially coming from
:23:55. > :23:55.the right side of the court for a right-hander, but she does it very
:23:56. > :24:30.well. They call a double on April Ross,
:24:31. > :24:36.saying that the dog, Anouk Depre did not touch that. We have a video
:24:37. > :24:42.challenge. The challenge system is quite new to beach volleyball. I
:24:43. > :24:49.appreciate it. It ensures they get the call right. However, in these
:24:50. > :25:01.Olympic Games already, we have seen some arguable results because of it.
:25:02. > :25:18.In what a player can actually challenge.
:25:19. > :25:36.There was a touch, I think we could all see that at home. The athletes
:25:37. > :25:43.no longer can rely or fake out the referees with their acting skills.
:25:44. > :25:45.Good luck, bad luck, who knows. Some of them have got very, very good at
:25:46. > :26:15.that. April Ross orator little bit right
:26:16. > :26:22.there. Verge-Depre, great position and great timing. April Ross hits
:26:23. > :26:33.such a heavy ball that it's got to come back even faster.
:26:34. > :26:41.April Ross responding, catching the line on that one. We are all tied
:26:42. > :26:57.up, 5-5 here in set number two. Kerri Walsh Jennings says I got your
:26:58. > :27:42.back, April. The Swiss playing much more
:27:43. > :28:13.aggressive after their time-out early here in set number two.
:28:14. > :28:31.What they get! Isabelle Forrer was an April's cut shot, and then places
:28:32. > :28:58.it almost perfectly. And just like that, the Swiss gain
:28:59. > :29:08.control. After being down 4-1 out of the gates of set number two here,
:29:09. > :29:13.USA won set number 120-13. -- set number one, 20-13. April Ross keeps
:29:14. > :29:18.it simple, goes across court. Set number one, the Swiss were going
:29:19. > :29:20.after Kerri Walsh Jennings, they have switched their game and started
:29:21. > :29:31.going after April Ross. Verge-Depre has got her share of
:29:32. > :29:45.blocks in this sector. Great rally, great net play by both
:29:46. > :30:24.sides. April Ross just pounding that
:30:25. > :30:56.sideline. She is so strong. Kerri Walsh Jennings... What's
:30:57. > :31:01.impressive about that plague is how she was recovering from her shoulder
:31:02. > :31:06.injury, she had to play with her and non-dominant hand, her left hand --
:31:07. > :31:13.that play. Her and April are still incredibly successful.
:31:14. > :31:18.STUDIO: Don't get angry, but we're going to leave the beach volleyball,
:31:19. > :31:30.but with good reason. You can continue to watch that via the Red
:31:31. > :31:34.Button. We are going because, as promised, we have a gold medal match
:31:35. > :31:42.which promises to be a real beauty. We're going to go to Riocentro
:31:43. > :31:46.Pavilion End three, the women's singles gold medals match. It sees
:31:47. > :31:50.Ning Ding taking gone Xiaoxia Li, they are both from China, Xiaoxia Li
:31:51. > :31:56.is the defending champion. Prepare yourself for magic on the table. Old
:31:57. > :32:01.and silver medal up for grabs. The commentators are Simon Reeve and
:32:02. > :32:05.Paul hand. -- gold and silver. COMMENTATOR: This should be a
:32:06. > :32:09.cracker. All Chinese, but plenty of passion here. This is a repeat of
:32:10. > :32:20.the Olympic gold medal match in London. And there is no love lost
:32:21. > :32:23.between these two. Xiaoxia Li, the current Olympic champion, Ning Ding,
:32:24. > :32:32.her opponent, the number two in the world, the current world champion.
:32:33. > :32:36.So, will events turn around four years later? We shall see. Xiaoxia
:32:37. > :32:47.Li to begin. She hasn't dropped a game all the
:32:48. > :33:09.way through. Xiaoxia Li has been playing some
:33:10. > :33:16.really good table tennis, as you say. Including that win in the
:33:17. > :33:27.semifinal earlier this morning, 10am. Fukuhara failed to win the
:33:28. > :33:29.bronze medal, that when the king sunny, who did well in the semifinal
:33:30. > :33:46.against Ding Ning. -- Kim Song EE. The runner-up in the Olympics, the
:33:47. > :33:57.reigning world champion, twice a world champion, Ning Ding.
:33:58. > :34:07.It is the one thing she hasn't got in her locker, the Olympic gold
:34:08. > :34:11.medal. As you've imagined, they've played a lot over the years, these
:34:12. > :34:15.two, they are very, very familiar. They play on the same Chinese team,
:34:16. > :34:21.the team event that starts on Friday. They have met 22 times. Ding
:34:22. > :34:34.has won 12 of those meetings. Incidentally, the world number one
:34:35. > :34:40.didn't compete in the singles, she wasn't chosen by the Chinese to be
:34:41. > :34:43.the world number one since December. She will play on the team
:34:44. > :34:47.competition which starts on Friday, but the Chinese decided that these
:34:48. > :34:52.two were the best bets for the singles title. You have to guess
:34:53. > :35:10.that they were right. This is a devastating start for Ning Ding.
:35:11. > :35:17.One of the features when you watch the lady in pink, Ning Ding, she has
:35:18. > :35:21.got the coolest hand style in table tennis, no doubt about that, it
:35:22. > :35:25.barely moves, but she is a terrific athlete Angie plays the majority of
:35:26. > :35:30.the ball on her forehand, so adept at running around the backhand, so
:35:31. > :35:40.adept at doing so, her nephew style is quite quirky. -- her nephew --
:35:41. > :35:44.her nifty style. Xiaoxia Li is incredibly powerful, loves to get on
:35:45. > :35:45.the front foot, she can rip through opponents like a chainsaw because
:35:46. > :36:01.she is so bristling with power. It must be an unnerving start,
:36:02. > :36:05.though. Sporadic success. She to a world champion, won the worlds in
:36:06. > :36:07.Paris in 2013. Bronze medallist in last year's World Championship in
:36:08. > :36:22.China. I think it always takes a little
:36:23. > :36:26.while to get used to a lefty, because they play so few lefties,
:36:27. > :36:32.that is probably worth a couple of points a game in favour of Ning Ding
:36:33. > :36:33.herself, you can see how adept she is, she has versatility, very
:36:34. > :36:42.explosive. Lee can't really get it going, no
:36:43. > :37:18.rhythm at all. -- Xiaoxia Li. This is more like it, but it's
:37:19. > :37:23.probably going to be too late to save this opening game. The
:37:24. > :37:32.best-of-7, the first of four games. The first 11 points. -- the first to
:37:33. > :37:36.11 points. Xiaoxia Li is two years senior, in black, she is the team
:37:37. > :37:40.captain of the team event, she is the elder statesman. You wouldn't
:37:41. > :37:45.think so at the moment though, it is that with the ascendancy. She is
:37:46. > :37:47.nibbling away at that commanding lead -- it is Ding Ning at the
:37:48. > :38:05.ascendancy. Wow. What a scorching return.
:38:06. > :38:09.Dismissive, taken so early and thunderously hit. She hinged well
:38:10. > :38:13.with the ankle and wrist. Look at that, so quick to get onto it. These
:38:14. > :38:18.two know each other patterns of play like no other, that is what is going
:38:19. > :38:22.to make this such an exciting encounter. They have met so many
:38:23. > :38:25.times, practised so many times together over the years, really good
:38:26. > :38:33.buddies, but that is all to one side. That is a terrific end. Enter
:38:34. > :38:39.this opening game, five successive points for Li. -- end to this
:38:40. > :39:04.opening game. She is really making that power tell.
:39:05. > :39:15.Unbelievable! Ding Ning getting lucky, the net cord proved decisive,
:39:16. > :39:18.ferocious attack nullified by a bit of luck, but also by Ding Ning. Two
:39:19. > :39:44.game points. Oh, what a waste. Yeah, just
:39:45. > :39:48.overcooking the length on that one. Both players have had runs of five
:39:49. > :39:53.points in this game, it's been terrific.
:39:54. > :39:57.Game point gain on her serve, it will need to be a better served than
:39:58. > :40:18.the last one -- again. She nails it! The earlier advantage
:40:19. > :40:24.had proved decisive. Li coming back and showing that she is going to be
:40:25. > :40:33.a huge contender in this gold medal match. So the first game to Ding
:40:34. > :40:36.Ning, eight minutes, in 11.2 nine. There was enough in the latter
:40:37. > :40:42.stages of this game to make it really up in the balance -- 11-9.
:40:43. > :40:47.Particularly when you consider that Ding Ning was 6-1 up with a
:40:48. > :40:53.sparkling start, but Xiaoxia Li nibbling back at her. It was a very
:40:54. > :40:56.competitive, sharp end to the opening game. If that is what we
:40:57. > :41:05.have got to look forward to in the games ahead, it is just so exciting.
:41:06. > :41:08.Interestingly, Ding Ning drops to her haunches and flings it from
:41:09. > :41:15.reverse sides of the bat on her serve. But Xiaoxia Li just dismisses
:41:16. > :41:25.it. Officials of the IOC watching gone. -- watching on.
:41:26. > :41:39.The winner of the opening game starts the second.
:41:40. > :41:47.Xiaoxia Li is normally so adept at getting on to the attack, the
:41:48. > :41:51.Frankfurt very quickly. But against Ding Ning denied because the quality
:41:52. > :42:01.is so good -- getting on the front foot. What a turnaround that. --
:42:02. > :42:04.there. Such ferocity from Li. Yes, she didn't have a lot of backswing
:42:05. > :42:06.on the backhand but it came through with real force and set up a point
:42:07. > :42:21.for the forehand attack. Dean likes to play with a lot more
:42:22. > :42:27.loop off both sides, it mulls in the air and deviate as it hits the table
:42:28. > :42:28.-- Ding Ning. Whereas Li is much flatter and firmer in her concise
:42:29. > :42:36.attacks. It is a thick edge finish just off
:42:37. > :43:09.the side of the paint. Oh, mesmerising play! Thunderous,
:43:10. > :43:15.really quite something to be part of. It real privilege. I love those
:43:16. > :43:42.rallies, high octane tempo. So watchful, just in case it flicked
:43:43. > :43:47.out onto the table. Undaunted by dropping the first game, Li, right
:43:48. > :44:07.onto the attacks, the start of game number two.
:44:08. > :44:29.Just got a hand under the end of the table, nowhere for to go.
:44:30. > :44:34.Well, in contrast to Game one, it is a much stronger start from Xiaoxia
:44:35. > :44:58.Li in this game. Just not able to deal with this
:44:59. > :45:01.ferocious attack at the moment. Getting in really quickly there of
:45:02. > :45:23.that backhand return. There is just no hiding place.
:45:24. > :45:30.Anything that pops up even mildly is being buried. It was a thunderous
:45:31. > :45:37.attack, just crunched into the left pocket of Ding Ning who could barely
:45:38. > :45:43.get out of the way. She has got attitude, Li.
:45:44. > :45:54.She is all over Ding Ning at the moment. She is like Serena Williams
:45:55. > :45:56.in the tennis equivalent, the energy she brings, and she magnetise is you
:45:57. > :46:24.to her. She is very powerful. Well, she seems unstoppable at the
:46:25. > :46:29.moment. She is taking it particularly early at the moment,
:46:30. > :46:38.very early and very strong, using the table. Ding struggling to get it
:46:39. > :47:02.out of Li Xiaoxia's shot. Great ability to change the point of
:47:03. > :47:06.attack when she can get off. But the occasions have been very few in this
:47:07. > :47:12.second game. She plays with a lot more margin, Ding Ning, whereas Li
:47:13. > :47:19.Xiaoxia, hard and early, minimal backswing.
:47:20. > :47:32.Really good, spinning serve. Again, nothing that Ding could do about
:47:33. > :47:38.that. Five-game points to level up at a game apiece.
:47:39. > :47:48.Well, devastating at the start of that second game, from the get go.
:47:49. > :47:56.She is firmly in control at the moment. She has got the long levers,
:47:57. > :48:02.Li Xiaoxia, remarkably compact shots taken early. This was always build
:48:03. > :48:08.to be a Crackerjack match, and it is developing into that already, it is
:48:09. > :48:13.so watchable, so intriguing. Will Ding Ning avenge the loss four years
:48:14. > :48:20.ago, or will Li Xiaoxia retain the title?
:48:21. > :48:31.Table tennis in the fold in the Olympics from Seoul in 1988. China,
:48:32. > :48:37.not surprisingly, have won all seven women's singles titles, and five of
:48:38. > :48:42.the seven silver medals as well. And you can see, the level here is
:48:43. > :48:52.simply astonishing. It has been well documented, the Imperial city of the
:48:53. > :48:55.Chinese, they are just so strong. -- the imperiousness of the Chinese, so
:48:56. > :49:17.strong in this game. Game three. What can Ding do to try to stem the
:49:18. > :49:29.tide which is building so solidly against her?
:49:30. > :49:38.Ding generally of late has been losing the battle, she has been
:49:39. > :49:43.playing centrally on the table, if she could try to get Li Xiaoxia off
:49:44. > :49:45.to an angle, get on the stretch. When it is in her slot, Li Xiaoxia
:49:46. > :50:28.is very powerful and dangerous. When these two met in the Olympic
:50:29. > :50:34.final in London in 2012, there was quite a bit of an altercation
:50:35. > :50:40.between Ding here and the Italian umpire, who Dr three penalty points,
:50:41. > :50:44.one for an illegal serve, one for wasting time, and one for taking the
:50:45. > :50:47.towel too early, and she never recovered from that.
:50:48. > :51:03.Psychologically, that was crushing. Not the same successfully at the
:51:04. > :51:04.start of game number three, but I don't imagine she is going into her
:51:05. > :51:23.shell. Just breathtaking stuff. She loved
:51:24. > :51:26.that play, that is one of those long rallies you don't want to be coming
:51:27. > :51:46.out on the losing side of, psychologically.
:51:47. > :51:54.The shots that were homing in so consistently in game number two just
:51:55. > :52:00.aren't now. She has lost, the radar has switched off temporarily. They
:52:01. > :52:04.are living at such an outstanding rally tempo. You have to be fully
:52:05. > :52:15.focused. Isn't it amazing how it can turn
:52:16. > :52:20.around? It is, I think it is very subtle, and to the untrained eye, it
:52:21. > :52:23.is hard to see, but Ding just putting on a little more pressure, a
:52:24. > :52:32.little more spin, changing the speed and spins.
:52:33. > :52:37.And you can sense the reticence of both to back away from the table,
:52:38. > :52:42.they don't want to give the other that increment of time. Five
:52:43. > :52:58.successive points she had won before that.
:52:59. > :53:09.Great defence from Ding Ning! The number one seed now. She is really
:53:10. > :53:13.strutting her stuff. She did really well to get round this backhand and
:53:14. > :53:14.just unleash the forehand for this rally, terrific stuff from Ding
:53:15. > :54:04.Ning. Suddenly she is eating into that
:54:05. > :54:10.lead of Ding 's. We know when she gets her mojo going high devastating
:54:11. > :54:14.she can be. When she gets onto the front of the table with that early
:54:15. > :54:18.backhand, it is so concise and telling, and even if it comes back,
:54:19. > :54:27.there is a forehand to follow up with crushing power.
:54:28. > :54:36.So good, because she changed the point of attack, Li, and I thought
:54:37. > :54:43.she had won the point, but Ding had read it. Yes, the trouble is when
:54:44. > :55:00.you change things, the opponent can bite you back, and she read it.
:55:01. > :55:09.Still work to do. She hasn't got rid of her in this third game.
:55:10. > :55:31.Well, that is the price you pay. If she is going to hit the forehand
:55:32. > :55:39.from that far wide. You surrender a lot of court when you were on around
:55:40. > :55:43.-- runaround at any stage. Look at that reflection from Li Xiaoxia, so
:55:44. > :55:53.focused. What a crucial serve this is now from Ding.
:55:54. > :56:07.Again, it seemed a great return, but Ding was onto it, and she is now two
:56:08. > :56:14.points away from regaining the lead. The first example of the Tomahawk
:56:15. > :56:22.serve from Ding, she normally uses it a lot, but Li Xiaoxia is up to
:56:23. > :56:52.it. Li with two serves of her own to reduce the deficit. Not that time.
:56:53. > :57:03.Just a little bit of height on that second shot, and Li was in. She has
:57:04. > :57:07.done really well to draw level here, Li Xiaoxia, showing a lot of
:57:08. > :57:31.character. Desperate defence from Ding Ning.
:57:32. > :57:38.Again, forcing her wide to play that forehand from the backhand side, and
:57:39. > :58:09.she has got game point now, has Li Xiaoxia.
:58:10. > :58:18.Well, but Tomahawk serve did the job, ten point each, first to two
:58:19. > :58:25.ahead now, and the serve changes hands on every point. Scoreboard
:58:26. > :58:26.parity, as anticipated, a really tight affair for this gold-medal
:58:27. > :58:44.match. Whatever the score, whatever the
:58:45. > :58:49.situation of the match, if she sees half an opportunity, bingo. Such a
:58:50. > :58:51.serve, loaded with spin, and the return got what it deserved. Credit
:58:52. > :59:16.to the server, Li there, very brave. CHEERING
:59:17. > :59:20.She was taking it to the brink there, allowing Li on that forehand,
:59:21. > :59:28.but it worked. Yes, just when you sure that Li had
:59:29. > :59:33.the upper hand, Ding biting back with that sting. A steely look she
:59:34. > :59:46.gave her. They both have attitude here, bundles of it.
:59:47. > :00:17.Again, quick on the attack, Li, and a third game point.
:00:18. > :00:33.Yes, the surface did the job. She knows exactly what served she wants
:00:34. > :00:49.to put in -- the survey did the job. Going with game plan A, indeed they
:00:50. > :00:49.both are, right now. It is about pitting their strengths against
:00:50. > :01:13.there opponent's weakness. Great forehand flick return,
:01:14. > :01:18.disguised and deceptive, could not get a read on that. A fourth game
:01:19. > :01:21.point, this time, importantly, it is dealing with the serve.
