:01:29. > :01:31.road race at the weekend and is currently third in the race as well.
:01:32. > :01:37.Canada knocked off the podium and it afford. Zabaleta and sky is in the
:01:38. > :01:42.gold medal position. Van der Breggen fighting back, five seconds behind
:01:43. > :01:53.here. She has it all to do. Surveillance
:01:54. > :02:00.Gaya -- Zabelinskaya drove through this race. The American was a few
:02:01. > :02:05.seconds behind at 19.7 kilometres Villumsem has been riding well in
:02:06. > :02:10.the top five, fist at the last check, it is all very close.
:02:11. > :02:15.Villumsem 24 seconds in arrears, too much ground to wake up that might
:02:16. > :02:18.make-up. She is doing some damage into the finish but pulling it back
:02:19. > :02:23.to slowly to challenge for the top spot. Can she get herself a medal?
:02:24. > :02:27.Christian Armstrong going for a hat-trick of Olympic titles in this

:02:37. > :02:40.but didn't have the speed in her legs today to get anywhere close to
:02:41. > :02:46.the medal positions. As we watch, Lisa Browner, the former world
:02:47. > :02:54.champion comes towards the line. Lisa Brennauer unable to trouble the

:03:08. > :03:13.Longo Borghini stays in the bronze medal. She has fought back well, so
:03:14. > :03:16.coming back and see riders very well on different areas of the course.
:03:17. > :03:21.Some surprises in this final section. We are about to find out
:03:22. > :03:23.what Anna van der Breggen can pull out of the bag in the final
:03:24. > :03:30.kilometre is as we watch the gold medallist from the road race at the
:03:31. > :03:34.weekend, Anna van der Breggen, gold on Sunday. Can she add another one
:03:35. > :03:40.here? Van der Breggen comes into the finishing straight, she has 100
:03:41. > :03:44.metres to go. This will be close. 44 minutes and 31 seconds is the time
:03:45. > :03:50.to beat. She hasn't quite managed it. She comes towards the line and
:03:51. > :03:59.is nearly six seconds slower. Silver medal position just now for Anna van
:04:00. > :04:02.der Breggen. That was a good ride by her, she held her own to the finish
:04:03. > :04:06.but could not make up the ground. The climbs was where she expected to
:04:07. > :04:10.do some damage, couldn't do it. Villumsem the other way around,
:04:11. > :04:13.survived the climbs and this is the territory she likes the best, she
:04:14. > :04:16.has a lot of ground to make up and it is a question of, can she get
:04:17. > :04:20.herself into a medal winning position in these closing stages.
:04:21. > :04:25.Conditions far from ideal here for the riders. Linda Williamson
:04:26. > :04:30.splashing her way back into Pontal and the beach-front. We haven't had
:04:31. > :04:33.an opportunity to see this particular part of the coastline in
:04:34. > :04:37.all its glory today by any stretch of the imagination. But we have been
:04:38. > :04:42.given a decent race by these writers and it is not quite over yet. Linda
:04:43. > :04:46.Williamson will come up short in her bid for Olympic glory. Certainly for
:04:47. > :04:51.glory, but she's in touch with getting a medal and it looks like
:04:52. > :04:55.the only one open to her is the bronze just now. That is being
:04:56. > :05:00.fought out. Armstrong is the one we are waiting for, the only one that
:05:01. > :05:04.can realistically challenge that woman for the top spot at this
:05:05. > :05:08.Olympic Games. Any moment now, she is watching for the American to come
:05:09. > :05:17.around the corner is Williamson does exactly that. Because Linda
:05:18. > :05:19.Williamson -- Villumsem and who hadn't shown much top form
:05:20. > :05:23.throughout the season but looks to have been coming good in time for
:05:24. > :05:27.the Olympic Games. She was a strong in the road race and prominent in
:05:28. > :05:33.the peloton, she rings out every second she can as she comes towards
:05:34. > :05:40.the line and Linda Villumsem crosses the line 22.74 seconds slower than
:05:41. > :05:48.Zeppelin sky and out of the medals in fifth. About ten second state for
:05:49. > :05:54.the last kilometre section of the course. -- ten kilometre. We're
:05:55. > :05:59.waiting for Armstrong, one rider left and we need to see what will
:06:00. > :06:05.happen, she thinks she has got it, we have not had that confirmed. We
:06:06. > :06:09.just saw Kristin Armstrong, the champion in 2008, the champion in
:06:10. > :06:15.2012, can she go for an unprecedented third gold in a row?
:06:16. > :06:18.The checks are showing as these are not ones we get anywhere else in the
:06:19. > :06:22.race but we are being shown Armstrong has pulled it back. This
:06:23. > :06:27.is the ratio likes the best, all the way into the finish, pushing against
:06:28. > :06:30.the headwind, she will do it. Here comes Kristin Armstrong in the final
:06:31. > :06:37.few metres of this ride, will she create cycling history? She is, and
:06:38. > :06:42.she has done it. Kristin Armstrong of the USA, 44 minutes and 26
:06:43. > :06:49.seconds, pools it out of the bag, a hat-trick of gold medals in the
:06:50. > :06:56.women's road time trial, one day before every third -- before her
:06:57. > :06:59.43rd birthday, she is still the best in the world and this particular
:07:00. > :07:03.discipline on two wheels. That is the effort it took and that is the
:07:04. > :07:08.end result, she's too tired to celebrate yet, the celebrations can
:07:09. > :07:12.wait, but it is a hat-trick of gold for the USA's Kristin Armstrong. Not
:07:13. > :07:16.many people put themselves in the resort -- in the recovery position.
:07:17. > :07:23.She has shown she has spent everything. I think she thought she
:07:24. > :07:26.had got it there, but Armstrong showed real experience throughout
:07:27. > :07:30.that race, major effort beautifully all the way to the finish, looking
:07:31. > :07:35.up at the border she crosses the line. What a ride by Kristin
:07:36. > :07:39.Armstrong, equalling the all-time record of three gold medals in
:07:40. > :07:43.women's road cycling in the Olympic Games, equalling the total number of
:07:44. > :07:47.medals won by Leontyne Van morsel, the total number of goals, Zabaleta
:07:48. > :07:51.sky is denied at the last. It would have been something of a
:07:52. > :07:56.controversial victory for her because she has not long returned
:07:57. > :08:00.from a doping ban, testing positive in March 20 14th and did not compete
:08:01. > :08:06.for 18 months, she only came in at the last moment, but there is our
:08:07. > :08:09.winner. Kristin Armstrong. What a ride it was, she certainly saved the
:08:10. > :08:16.best until last. The most mature rider in the field. Both men or
:08:17. > :08:22.women. It shows just what experience can do. Looked good in the road
:08:23. > :08:26.race, but you could see the form was pulled out before the final climb
:08:27. > :08:29.and the emotion on her face to take this title. And the realisation of
:08:30. > :08:33.what she has done is starting to hit home. This is a rider that retired
:08:34. > :08:41.in 2009 to start a family and retired again in 2012 having come
:08:42. > :08:46.back in 2011 and has returned a second time and, my goodness has it
:08:47. > :08:49.been worth it. She is now the Olympic champion once again. Kristin
:08:50. > :08:53.Armstrong has shown good form throughout the year. Second overall
:08:54. > :08:58.in the tour of California and second overall in the two of the dealer as
:08:59. > :09:02.well. We know she was doing well, and we saw it in the road race when
:09:03. > :09:06.she did some strong turns on the front of the peloton, pulling the
:09:07. > :09:10.Brazel and trying to the wake -- breakaway back on the half of her
:09:11. > :09:13.team-mates but now it was about her today and she delivered again. What
:09:14. > :09:20.a strike rate she has in the Olympic Games. Champion in Beijing, in
:09:21. > :09:26.London and in Rio as well and she has abruptly tomorrow, 43 tomorrow,
:09:27. > :09:30.the Olympic champion. Zabaleta sky are celebrated rather too soon,
:09:31. > :09:34.minute or two before the American had crossed the line. There is the
:09:35. > :09:40.three winners but the loser of the day is Ellen Van Dijk, finished in
:09:41. > :09:43.fourth position, 22 seconds in arrears having ridden of age of the
:09:44. > :09:48.road, she could have been challenging for that gold medal.
:09:49. > :09:55.That is all part of a judgment, it is not just about ability, you can
:09:56. > :10:02.see she's been consoled. Armstrong with the gold, Zabaleta sky --
:10:03. > :10:10.Zabelinskaya with the silver. Anna van der Breggen finishes with the
:10:11. > :10:14.bronze. Superman, 43 tomorrow and celebrating with the little one,
:10:15. > :10:18.wonderful scenes for Kristin Armstrong, the woman who retired
:10:19. > :10:23.after winning a second time trial gold in London and she is back, she
:10:24. > :10:27.only came back in April last year, decided to go for this and what a
:10:28. > :10:35.return Mrs for this supermum from Memphis. Strong indeed, the USA.
:10:36. > :10:38.Congratulations and we will reflect more on that victory for Kristin
:10:39. > :10:46.Armstrong as we build up-to-the-minute stand trial --
:10:47. > :10:50.build-up to the men's time trial. There have been waves and we are
:10:51. > :10:55.making waves at the rowing venue, but not the right waves. The wrong
:10:56. > :11:01.kind of waves I'm afraid goes once again we have no rolling. That has
:11:02. > :11:06.been cancelled for the day, it is all off, unfortunate because the
:11:07. > :11:12.first two of our 14 rowing finals with 4% ayes other semifinals are
:11:13. > :11:16.off, -- with four other semifinals. The weather has closed in and
:11:17. > :11:21.unfortunately conditions are not ideal. But happily there is always
:11:22. > :11:24.plenty to keep us occupied at an Olympic Games and we have plenty to
:11:25. > :11:31.show you between now and about 7pm your time.
:11:32. > :11:40.We are heading in doors to see some table tennis magic. Semifinals of
:11:41. > :11:45.the women's singles coming up. British bantamweight Qais Ashfaq
:11:46. > :11:53.makes his Olympic bow in the games in real, -- in Rio, the Yorkshireman
:11:54. > :11:56.against a tide today. It will be the turn of the men to tackle 55
:11:57. > :12:04.kilometre is the client and dissent in the men's time trial. 'S climbs
:12:05. > :12:08.and descents. They will roll on the ramp very soon. This is the plan of
:12:09. > :12:43.action over the next few hours. That is the two bladed paddle,
:12:44. > :12:49.rather than the one where you kneel in the canoe. We are now speaking
:12:50. > :12:52.about table tennis, China have enjoyed a fantastic amount of
:12:53. > :12:56.success in this event. If you go back over the last couple of
:12:57. > :13:00.Olympics in both Beijing and in London, no one else has had a look
:13:01. > :13:04.in for gold, clean sweep of the gold-medal is. But they don't just
:13:05. > :13:08.hold the balance of power in the sport, they do in their history of
:13:09. > :13:14.the sport as well. This is the sport in which ping-pong diplomacy sorted
:13:15. > :13:21.out not just podium places but global politics. Table tennis in
:13:22. > :13:31.China is more than just a sport, it is a national obsession. It is
:13:32. > :13:40.played here, including right here off Main Street in downtown Beijing.
:13:41. > :13:43.This guy's technique is incredible. Think football, cricket, Dickens and
:13:44. > :13:48.the Beatles and add them all together and you get some idea of
:13:49. > :13:56.how central table tennis is to modern Chinese consciousness. It was
:13:57. > :13:59.here in Tiananmen Square in the mid-19 50s that the little white
:14:00. > :14:05.ball first started rolling in red China. Chairman Mao decreed table
:14:06. > :14:09.tennis the sport of the masses, but this wasn't part of a public health
:14:10. > :14:14.programme but a straightforward political calculation. The reason
:14:15. > :14:17.being that if millions took on bat and ball child would conquer the
:14:18. > :14:25.world, which would bolster his leadership. -- China. He was right.
:14:26. > :14:31.In 1959 astonished the world, becoming tired's first world
:14:32. > :14:36.champion in any sport, he was succeeded by someone who won the
:14:37. > :14:42.next three world titles. Now healed as icons of revolutionary virtue,
:14:43. > :14:46.they used a distinctive grip where the bat is held between thumb and
:14:47. > :14:52.forefinger, technique used to this day by the older generation. This
:14:53. > :14:56.was table tennis with Chinese characteristics and the masses were
:14:57. > :15:05.mesmerised. In 1967, something unexpected happened when the white
:15:06. > :15:08.ball came to an abrupt halt. Here at the National training Centre, the
:15:09. > :15:11.Chinese table tennis team received a letter from the Communist leadership
:15:12. > :15:17.saying sport had become a bastion of anti-Maoism, the cultural Revolution
:15:18. > :15:21.had started and the top players were bundled off to rural provinces to
:15:22. > :15:28.begin two years of hard labour. They were the lucky ones. China's first
:15:29. > :15:31.world champion and two national team coaches were under house arrest and
:15:32. > :15:39.tortured. All three committed suicide. It wasn't until 1971 that
:15:40. > :15:43.he allowed Chinese game of tennis back onto the world's stage. Once
:15:44. > :15:51.again, the consequences would be extraordinary. In Japan at the World
:15:52. > :15:54.Championships, now called committee defended Glenn Caron, player from
:15:55. > :16:00.America. For those of their handshake were published in the
:16:01. > :16:03.press leaving them to invite the US team to China, the first Americans
:16:04. > :16:06.to officially set that in China since the Communist revolution full
:16:07. > :16:09.Richard Nixon called it the week that shook the world and ten months
:16:10. > :16:14.later he followed in their fit steps.
:16:15. > :16:23.On behalf of all the government of the People's Republic of the
:16:24. > :16:30.president will visit on an appropriate date before May, 1972.
:16:31. > :16:39.It marked china's re-engagement with the world. But in the 1980s China
:16:40. > :16:44.once again surrendered global domination, but this time not
:16:45. > :16:48.because of politics, but because of a blonde Swede. He transformed the
:16:49. > :16:54.dynamics of table tennis with his audacious bins. China, which still
:16:55. > :17:01.had the same technique, could not keep up. It took Deng Xiaoping, a
:17:02. > :17:07.visionary, deliberate Chinese table tennis. He allowed top players to
:17:08. > :17:10.keep up their prize-money, but more importantly he allowed them to ditch
:17:11. > :17:19.the old style. The results were remarkable. They revolutionised a
:17:20. > :17:23.new technique with a swivel backhand with the ball was hit with the
:17:24. > :17:33.reverse side of the bat. Perhaps the greatest irony of all, the player
:17:34. > :17:38.defeated the ageing Swede to complete one of the most hypnotic
:17:39. > :17:42.finals of the last half-century. It is this ball that will forever
:17:43. > :17:46.define this extraordinary nation. And the first of the medals will be
:17:47. > :17:52.presented today. We have the semifinals in the women's event and
:17:53. > :17:59.it features the defending champion against Ai Fukuhara of Japan. She is
:18:00. > :18:04.27 now, but she has been a child's life since she was four years of
:18:05. > :18:08.age. When she won the silver in the team event four years ago, they
:18:09. > :18:15.created a waxwork offer and put it at the airport in Tokyo in order to
:18:16. > :18:22.hasten her return home. A lot of people will be willing her on today.
:18:23. > :18:24.Let's watch this one live and Paul Hand is our commentator. It has just
:18:25. > :18:47.begun. Off we go. The gold medallist of London, 2012,
:18:48. > :18:53.Li Xiaoxia, in the red, up against Ai Fukuhara.
:18:54. > :19:04.Both of them yet to concede again, both are in fine fettle. Li Xiaoxia
:19:05. > :19:11.is the third seed, world ranked fifth. She has an immense presence
:19:12. > :19:13.at this event. Completed the grand slam after becoming the world
:19:14. > :19:31.champion in 2013. That is a thunderous backhand. She
:19:32. > :19:41.likes to take it early. She is a heavyweight player. She was called
:19:42. > :19:45.the eternal second but a long time until she broke the curse of the
:19:46. > :19:53.London Olympic Games where she beat Ding Ning 4-1 to become champion.
:19:54. > :19:57.Four years have elapsed and she has now become the hunted as opposed to
:19:58. > :20:00.the hunter. She is playing some really good table tennis. Strong
:20:01. > :20:22.stuff from the Chinese player. Took two gold medals at the London
:20:23. > :20:32.Olympics in the singles and the team event. It is the sport of the masses
:20:33. > :20:38.in China. China had a stranglehold over world table tennis which is
:20:39. > :20:50.well documented. The Japanese player is really quick. World ranked
:20:51. > :20:53.eighth. Fourth in the world. Just a year younger than Li Xiaoxia.
:20:54. > :20:58.Diminutive in stature. Only five foot one. She is very quick. But it
:20:59. > :21:05.is the weight of the short of Li Xiaoxia that is overwhelming. You
:21:06. > :21:13.can see that body blow just tangling up the Japanese number two. She has
:21:14. > :21:44.got awesome power, Li Xiaoxia. For somebody who declares during the
:21:45. > :21:48.post-match interviews that she is feeling the pressure of expectation
:21:49. > :21:50.as defending champion, she is hitting the ball pretty nicely out
:21:51. > :22:04.here. She is the team captain. This is their 11th encounter these
:22:05. > :22:13.two. The last went for Ai Fukuhara was in
:22:14. > :22:33.October 2009 in the World Cup. This lady has been on the receiving
:22:34. > :22:44.end of the last eight defeats between 2010 and 2013. Brilliant
:22:45. > :22:49.play, a terrific change in direction al attack. Could that boy her
:22:50. > :23:12.confidence? Seven-game point opportunities in
:23:13. > :23:36.this race to four games. The first of the women's semifinals today.
:23:37. > :23:45.A menacing courtside presence, the Chinese coach. Thunderous pace from
:23:46. > :23:49.Li Xiaoxia. She takes the opening game 11-4 in just five minutes. She
:23:50. > :24:12.is off to a flyer. So, women's singles table tennis
:24:13. > :24:17.will be reaching a climax this evening. It is likely to be the
:24:18. > :24:23.question of which Chinese player will take the gold medal really. The
:24:24. > :24:31.Chinese one or four Olympic table tennis titles in Beijing and did the
:24:32. > :24:40.same four years later in London. The world's number one is in the stands
:24:41. > :24:45.watching this one. Problems in selection, but most problems to have
:24:46. > :24:50.for the Chinese. There is so much depth in their game. For them not to
:24:51. > :24:55.get a gold medal would be kind of like a national disaster in this
:24:56. > :25:00.sport that they love so much. They pride themselves in the level of
:25:01. > :25:03.prowess and professionalism. They leave no stone unturned, they watch
:25:04. > :25:12.video footage of the upcoming opponents. They are so thorough in
:25:13. > :25:23.everything that they do. Game number two.
:25:24. > :25:31.Thunderous pace from Li Xiaoxia. Ding Ning is the world number two,
:25:32. > :25:49.the top seed in the draw. She is playing at 11 o'clock local
:25:50. > :26:01.time. There has been a real buzzy
:26:02. > :26:14.atmosphere here, particularly when a Brazilian player is playing. Just a
:26:15. > :26:35.wave of energy, totally refreshing. Passionate, local Brazilian support.
:26:36. > :26:43.Changing the attack lines. Loaded with topspin and security. Ai
:26:44. > :26:59.Fukuhara has a thankless task. Brilliant, quick, super and Shell.
:27:00. > :27:15.Got onto that really early. -- agile.
:27:16. > :27:23.Well, it is cool outside today. We had a bit of rain locally, but the
:27:24. > :27:28.temperatures are rising in here as this table tennis is hotting up. It
:27:29. > :27:31.is going to be a terrific day. A date when the Olympic gold medallist
:27:32. > :27:40.will stand on the podium late on tonight.
:27:41. > :28:06.Judging from what we have seen it is likely to be an old Chinese affair.
:28:07. > :28:10.She has got power, placement, disguise, variety from her forehand
:28:11. > :28:31.attack and a huge backhand as well. You can see that Ai Fukuhara is just
:28:32. > :28:36.trying to spike the backhand down the line, but Li Xiaoxia is so
:28:37. > :28:55.dialled in from the off. She has started like a steam train
:28:56. > :29:21.out here. It is an outstanding tempo that she lives at.
:29:22. > :29:32.A brilliant push from the forehand of Li Xiaoxia. It is vital for Ai
:29:33. > :29:37.Fukuhara to dig deep and get a toehold into this game. Only
:29:38. > :29:45.engineered four points in the opener. Can she take this further?
:29:46. > :29:54.It is so difficult to get a read on her.
:29:55. > :29:58.The world number one is not playing in the singles event. She will be
:29:59. > :30:10.involved in the team event. This must come as a real, not
:30:11. > :30:19.surprise, to this lady because she has been hitting the ball
:30:20. > :30:26.beautifully this week. As soon as the ball pops up remotely high it is
:30:27. > :30:29.just crushed away. Inside 11 minutes now and Li Xiaoxia has a
:30:30. > :30:37.stranglehold on this opening women's semifinal. Ai Fukuhara became
:30:38. > :30:43.professional aged ten. She began playing at the age of three. She was
:30:44. > :30:49.a real child prodigy in terms of table tennis. She qualified to
:30:50. > :30:52.compete in Athens at the age of 15, the youngest ever female table
:30:53. > :30:58.tennis player in the Olympic Games. She lost that year and was chosen as
:30:59. > :31:05.the national flag bearer for Japan in Beijing. Her youth and talent
:31:06. > :31:15.have made her a popular sports star in Japan.
:31:16. > :31:31.That is where we are in terms of momentum.
:31:32. > :31:40.Ai Fukuhara has it all to do, the world number two has her work cut
:31:41. > :31:44.out. Can she bring something fresh. It is almost as if Li Xiaoxia knows
:31:45. > :32:07.her patterns of play and knows what to expect.
:32:08. > :32:13.Ai Fukuhara began table tennis in China at a young age and speaks
:32:14. > :32:16.fluent Mandarin Chinese with a zero is that a north-east accent,
:32:17. > :32:22.therefore she has great popularity in China. More than other players
:32:23. > :32:36.from outside China. Look at that, dispatched, on top of the table so
:32:37. > :32:46.quickly. It is just a barrage incessantly from Xiaoxia Li.
:32:47. > :32:50.Brilliance from Ai Fukuhara, using the width of the table to great
:32:51. > :33:04.effect, almost acknowledged by Xiaoxia Li.
:33:05. > :33:09.Despite popping the ball high, didn't she redeem herself. Really
:33:10. > :33:34.quick to turn the point around. It is only her second Olympic games
:33:35. > :33:42.appearance, Xiaoxia Li. Desperate to defend her title. She took bronze at
:33:43. > :33:49.the World Championships in China in 2015. And one the World
:33:50. > :34:04.Championships in Paris 2013. A time-out has been called.
:34:05. > :34:13.Xiaoxia Li, the proto- winner of 16 tournament titles, Asian games when
:34:14. > :34:20.twice in 2006 and 2007 Asian Championships winner in 2007 and
:34:21. > :34:25.2009. She is highly decorated, the former world number one of November
:34:26. > :34:35.2008. This player is right up against it,. She resides in Beijing
:34:36. > :34:41.with the national table tennis programme. She is five foot nine,
:34:42. > :34:44.almost eight inches taller than Ai Fukuhara, who is quick and sprightly
:34:45. > :34:55.but unable to dent Xiaoxia Li just now. After the 62nd time-out, play
:34:56. > :35:03.will resume. Two games up and 4-1 up in points in this race to four
:35:04. > :35:18.games. The reigning Olympic champion in the driving seat.
:35:19. > :35:26.It is just so difficult to make inroads and will look at that
:35:27. > :35:32.response from Xiaoxia Li, she has barely put a foot wrong.
:35:33. > :35:40.Ai Fukuhara will have to throw caution to the window and hit with
:35:41. > :35:48.abandon. You can see she likes to say tied to the table but she
:35:49. > :35:55.doesn't seem to have the pace in comparison to Xiaoxia Li. She just
:35:56. > :35:58.has more on everything, fast, long served, spilling wide of the table,
:35:59. > :36:02.indicative of the scoreboard pressure she is now under and try to
:36:03. > :36:08.swing out and try to swing Adam Stephens. -- swing out and stay
:36:09. > :36:17.loose. It was a good, short serve from
:36:18. > :36:28.Xiaoxia Li but the forehand was too high and should have been crushed.
:36:29. > :36:35.She has surpassed any previous Olympic Games showing, Ai Fukuhara.
:36:36. > :36:40.It is just incessant. Look at that, Chinese flags abound. Good support.
:36:41. > :36:53.It has been a cracking venue. The pretenders have come and gone,
:36:54. > :37:07.and only the contenders remain. Who can deliver on the biggest of
:37:08. > :37:17.occasions? Defending Olympic champion in fine fettle. It's
:37:18. > :37:23.looking like she would be denied. Three games up in just 60 minutes
:37:24. > :37:41.played, romping through this semifinal.
:37:42. > :37:51.Social media platforms in overdrive around the table tennis. The ITF
:37:52. > :37:55.sites creaking under the strain. World table tennis brings together
:37:56. > :38:02.so many different faiths, religions, races, languages, cultures and
:38:03. > :38:09.traditions. Wonderful sport. She has such reflexive were brilliant and Mr
:38:10. > :38:20.fit game. -- you see such reflexive brilliance. -- in this to reflect --
:38:21. > :38:24.fantastic game. We are enjoying the best table tennis in the world from
:38:25. > :38:29.Rio on finals day. If you're joining us, will come -- well come full to
:38:30. > :38:37.view can catch the final deceiving at 9:30pm local time. It would be
:38:38. > :38:44.great to have your company. Ai Fukuhara beginning game format. It
:38:45. > :38:51.has been a really dominant display from Xiaoxia Li. The third seed
:38:52. > :38:56.really hitting the ball extremely well. She has been mercenary so far.
:38:57. > :39:03.Momentum increased and she is deemed rolling this one. The first game Ai
:39:04. > :39:07.Fukuhara gained four points, second game three, the third game only the
:39:08. > :39:17.solitary point. What will happen in Game four?
:39:18. > :39:24.Ai Fukuhara unable to get to the runs of points together, managed a
:39:25. > :39:32.run of two in the opening game, but just one solitary point in games two
:39:33. > :39:34.and three. Conversely, Xiaoxia Li, two runs of nine and a run of six
:39:35. > :39:52.consecutively. Very dictatorial. Look upwards for some -- divine
:39:53. > :40:03.inspiration for Ai Fukuhara, with it all to do. And she has been
:40:04. > :40:06.contained, stifled, smothered today by this player, who has just brought
:40:07. > :40:21.brilliance of the table. Just when you think Ai Fukuhara is
:40:22. > :40:24.on the front foot in control of the point and Xiaoxia Li just spikes the
:40:25. > :40:34.back had turned the point around. Look at that. The oft forehand
:40:35. > :40:50.winner, back behind. Five points away from a in this year's file. --
:40:51. > :40:55.final. The Chinese can absolutely delighted with Xiaoxia Li's
:40:56. > :41:05.performance. She is certainly more than warranted her place here.
:41:06. > :41:15.Defending champion in great form. A rare unforced error, listen to the
:41:16. > :41:23.crowd as the underdog snatches one solitary point in Game four. This is
:41:24. > :41:30.a battle to give your perspective of two top ten table tennis athletes in
:41:31. > :41:34.the women's game. Ai Fukuhara rated eight and currently seeded sixth,
:41:35. > :41:46.Japanese number two. Such editorial display from Xiaoxia Li. Multiple
:41:47. > :41:52.match points for Xiaoxia Li. And in no time at all she edges her name
:41:53. > :42:02.into the final berth in the women's singles event here in real central
:42:03. > :42:07.pavilion -- Rio central pavilion three. She got Ai Fukuhara headlock
:42:08. > :42:17.early and didn't relinquish. 24 minutes was all it took. 11-4, 11-3,
:42:18. > :42:22.11-1, 11-1. Quite a showing from Xiaoxia Li, sending out a message of
:42:23. > :42:28.intent to the other two semifinalists. There we are,
:42:29. > :42:33.confirmation, Xiaoxia Li safely through in the bottom half of the
:42:34. > :42:41.women's singles draw. Through that file about one 30 AM in your morning
:42:42. > :42:44.when she will play one of her fired -- Chinese colleagues or a
:42:45. > :42:48.competitor from North Korea, who is a final state under way shortly. We
:42:49. > :42:54.are reflecting on event in an intriguing women's road race time
:42:55. > :42:57.trial this morning, it has been won by 43 tomorrow Christian Armstrong
:42:58. > :43:03.from Memphis, Tennessee and this is a significant victory for her and
:43:04. > :43:07.over 40s because it is her third win in a row, Beijing and London and
:43:08. > :43:11.42-year-old, this is her last day of being 42, what a nice early birthday
:43:12. > :43:16.present this has been in front of her family. Her son Lucas is in
:43:17. > :43:22.attendance. Jill Douglas has been speaking to Christian Armstrong
:43:23. > :43:26.earlier. Many congratulations, some history today, your third Olympic
:43:27. > :43:31.title, how does that sound? It is amazing. I finished on the top step
:43:32. > :43:35.two times and I've come back and people ask me why in the world would
:43:36. > :43:40.I try and go for a third when you finished on top? It's because I can,
:43:41. > :43:45.because we can, whatever we put our minds do we can do it and that was
:43:46. > :43:49.my passage Dott message today Comey doesn't matter year age, your risk
:43:50. > :43:53.operator from, you have set a goal and go after it and I did that
:43:54. > :43:58.today. You had to fight for every inch of it. Yes, it all started at
:43:59. > :44:01.4:30am when I will had to wake up and use the rest room and I looked
:44:02. > :44:04.out the window and it was pouring rain and at that moment I had to
:44:05. > :44:07.change moment I had GTMO mentality because I could either go one way or
:44:08. > :44:13.the other. One way is I could be scared, it is scary going at those
:44:14. > :44:16.speeds on a technical course or I could take it as an opportunity and
:44:17. > :44:21.say I'm the most experienced out here, I will attack this course, so
:44:22. > :44:24.that is what I did. It paid off. You are an inspiration to so many and
:44:25. > :44:30.from the mums, to see you would look is at the end was really special, we
:44:31. > :44:33.saw him in London, the deliver but her special was at? It is really
:44:34. > :44:38.special, I'm a role model for my son, set an example and I have to
:44:39. > :44:44.teach him whether you win or lose, it is still a good result today he
:44:45. > :44:48.asked me, why are you crying? I said because I won, and he said, but why
:44:49. > :44:52.are you crying? And I said because I'm so happy. It is about taking
:44:53. > :44:56.lessons and he is here with me and I couldn't be more proud and my other
:44:57. > :45:02.families are here, my husband and best friend and family. Enjoy your
:45:03. > :45:10.birthday. Thank you. I'm sure she will, she is a role model.
:45:11. > :45:13.Interestingly, the silver medallist taking the silver after two bronze
:45:14. > :45:18.medals in London, after that she served a ban for 18 months for
:45:19. > :45:22.doping and was only allowed to race in the last few days having gone
:45:23. > :45:29.through all kinds of hoops in order to race. She takes silver and jails
:45:30. > :45:32.reaction from her. A silver medal at an Olympic Games that until recently
:45:33. > :45:36.you didn't know you would be competing in, how difficult has it
:45:37. > :45:45.been for you preparing? I was preparing from last time, for years.
:45:46. > :45:48.I didn't expect to do it is today because I did not feel very good
:45:49. > :45:52.myself but I am very happy to get the medal. Of course despondent
:45:53. > :45:56.because I only lost five seconds from the first place, but it is OK.
:45:57. > :46:00.What does this mean to the Russian team? There have been many problems,
:46:01. > :46:10.you yourself were a late addition to the Olympics. We got a lot of things
:46:11. > :46:17.about this, about the ban of all the team and everything. But I hope
:46:18. > :46:23.everything will be good and until the next Olympics, the Olympic team
:46:24. > :46:25.will be clear for everything and we proved to the world that we can
:46:26. > :46:38.compete without any doping. The men's time trial starts at
:46:39. > :46:43.3:15pm and we will be live to see the start of that one. Last night
:46:44. > :46:47.you were probably in bed, or maybe you set your alarm, but if you did
:46:48. > :46:53.not, let's reflect on a very interesting evening in the pool.
:46:54. > :46:56.Adam Peaty and Jazz Carlin were medallists. Siobhan-Marie O'connor
:46:57. > :46:59.was trying to become the third. Happily she was the fastest
:47:00. > :47:17.qualifier for last night's final. This is going to be interesting.
:47:18. > :47:26.Siobhan-Marie O'connor against Katinka Hosszu. It she can get
:47:27. > :47:33.within a tenth of a second, she can do this. The backstroke will go away
:47:34. > :47:38.a little bit. I am sure it is gold or silver, but can she be level, if
:47:39. > :47:48.not ahead, after the breaststroke. She is deeper than Katinka Hosszu.
:47:49. > :47:56.Katinka Hosszu was up first. Expect her to go away here, she won the 100
:47:57. > :48:01.backstroke. The Australian is also very good indeed. Katinka Hosszu has
:48:02. > :48:06.not got as much of a lead as we thought she would. This is very good
:48:07. > :48:16.news at the halfway stage for Siobhan-Marie O'connor of Great
:48:17. > :48:21.Britain. O'Connor is coming through on the breaststroke. She is faster
:48:22. > :48:33.than Katinka Hosszu on the breast. O'Connor is coming up.
:48:34. > :48:39.Siobhan-Marie O'connor is eating away, but I am not sure if it is
:48:40. > :48:46.enough. I think this will be tough for O'Connor. But she has broken it
:48:47. > :48:54.down. Katinka Hosszu is going for the world record and gold. This is a
:48:55. > :49:00.brilliant swim from Siobhan-Marie O'connor, the Commonwealth champion.
:49:01. > :49:05.She is not giving up a toll. Katinka Hosszu is starting to tire a little
:49:06. > :49:10.bit. Coming back is Siobhan-Marie O'connor of Great Britain. She is
:49:11. > :49:16.really trying. She is getting very close indeed. It looks like the gold
:49:17. > :49:20.will go to Katinka Hosszu, but only just. That was an amazing last 50
:49:21. > :49:28.metres freestyle for Siobhan-Marie O'connor. She gets silver. What a
:49:29. > :49:35.wonderful swim. She pushed it all the way. You cannot take the gold
:49:36. > :49:39.medal away from Katinka Hosszu, but Siobhan-Marie O'connor swam a great
:49:40. > :49:46.race. A wonderful moment for Great Britain. She took on the very best
:49:47. > :49:53.in the world, she took on the world record holder, and she nearly caught
:49:54. > :49:57.her. She wins silver in the women's 200 metres individual medley, the
:49:58. > :50:04.first Olympic medal for Great Britain in this event in history.
:50:05. > :50:13.Congratulations, that must feel pretty crazy. Yes, it feels unreal.
:50:14. > :50:17.I am trying not to cry. It is the best feeling in the world. When I
:50:18. > :50:23.looked up and ice at the time and the position I was in, it did not
:50:24. > :50:28.seem real. But walking around there and seeing my family I was getting
:50:29. > :50:42.choked up. It means everything. I have worked so hard for this. It
:50:43. > :50:45.means I am pleased. My family and everyone who is here, I am so
:50:46. > :50:51.grateful. It has been tough, but it is so worth it. When you say it has
:50:52. > :50:54.been tough, you had a medical dish and you had to overcome and you have
:50:55. > :51:01.certainly done that and you have performed on the big stage, it is
:51:02. > :51:05.incredible. I trained so hard, but sometimes you think, is it my time?
:51:06. > :51:12.I have worked really hard and I have done all I can in training, but I
:51:13. > :51:17.was so nervous in the swimming pool, but it just shows what determination
:51:18. > :51:21.and belief can do. I am over the moon, all the hard work has paid
:51:22. > :51:26.off. But I would not be able to do it without my amazing team and my
:51:27. > :51:32.amazing family. It is an individual sport, but we have the whole team
:51:33. > :51:36.behind us and it makes it so much more special. Although it is an
:51:37. > :51:43.individual sport, it is a team sport. I was so inspired watching
:51:44. > :51:47.Adam and Giles and the team have played a massive role and I am proud
:51:48. > :51:51.to be a part of it. Your family are here to support you and your dad is
:51:52. > :51:58.in the studio, do you have a message for him? I will try not to get
:51:59. > :52:04.emotional, but they support means everything. Thank you so much.
:52:05. > :52:08.Congratulations again. She is allowed a few tears, no
:52:09. > :52:15.problem at all. That is two silver medals and a gold medal in the swim
:52:16. > :52:19.meet last night. That equals the number of medals they want in their
:52:20. > :52:24.home games four years ago. Going very well at that point. We have
:52:25. > :52:30.enough filling about the exploits of Michael Phelps ever since he turned
:52:31. > :52:35.up as a 15-year-old in the Sydney games. He says these are the last
:52:36. > :52:39.games and he seems to be enjoying this and he has brought his young
:52:40. > :52:44.son with him, he is a few weeks old, and he seems like a different kind
:52:45. > :52:49.of person. Last night he was going for gold number 20 of his incredible
:52:50. > :52:55.career and doing so in an event in which he was pipped at the post the
:52:56. > :52:57.last time in London, by Chad Le Clos, you probably remember the epic
:52:58. > :53:14.contest. This was the rematch. Finally away and away clean. Chad Le
:53:15. > :53:21.Clos sits very well indeed, in the Green hat. The Black cat after that
:53:22. > :53:32.is Michael Phelps. In the centre there are the two Hungarian. Immense
:53:33. > :53:39.pressure at the start of such an important race for most of these men
:53:40. > :53:44.in here. Michael Phelps did not stay underwater that long. Laszlo Cseh is
:53:45. > :53:50.swimming his own race. Swimming strongly to 75 metres. Michael
:53:51. > :53:57.Phelps is going for it. This is very interesting. He was comfortable to
:53:58. > :54:06.50, but Michael Phelps is already starting to make his move. In London
:54:07. > :54:11.2012 he was comfortably ahead. Chad Le Clos has just had a look and has
:54:12. > :54:17.decided to go himself. Michael Phelps is leading Chad Le Clos is
:54:18. > :54:26.second and Laszlo Cseh is third. He cannot afford to leave anything
:54:27. > :54:35.until the last length. Could use, could that get him? Michael Phelps
:54:36. > :54:47.had an awesome time. Chad Le Clos is right back on. They are saying, it
:54:48. > :54:54.is all yours, go for it. This is amazing, the crowd are standing up.
:54:55. > :55:00.Chad Le Clos is fading. The Japanese is coming up quickly. Michael Phelps
:55:01. > :55:04.is going to take it. It is so close. Michael Phelps has taken it buy 41
:55:05. > :55:11.hundredths of a second. It was a shocking finish. He won it right at
:55:12. > :55:16.the end. I bet all sorts of stuff is going through his head. He has won
:55:17. > :55:27.the gold medal and he has 14 gold medals in a row, the first swimmer
:55:28. > :55:37.to do it in history. Chad Le Clos was in fourth. Laszlo Cseh was
:55:38. > :55:44.seventh. Where were the others? It was gold in Athens in 2004. It was
:55:45. > :55:50.gold in Beijing in 2008, it was silver in 2012 to Chad Le Clos, a
:55:51. > :55:54.massive shock, and he comes back four years later after taking a
:55:55. > :55:58.break and he wins a gold medal again, the first man in history to
:55:59. > :56:04.win four consecutive Olympic medals in the same event.
:56:05. > :56:10.Gold number 20, it never gets old really. There was a chance for
:56:11. > :56:17.number 21 and you start to lose count. It was the last race of the
:56:18. > :56:21.evening in the men's relay. He was a keen member of that one, but Great
:56:22. > :56:23.Britain's quartet were the fastest to qualify and the reigning world
:56:24. > :56:42.champions in this one. Steven Milne is leading off in the
:56:43. > :56:49.Olympic final. The fastest qualifiers, the British team. Thomas
:56:50. > :56:57.Fraser Holmes of Australia has gone off very quickly in lane seven for
:56:58. > :57:05.Australia. Most of the important records in this event are below
:57:06. > :57:09.seven minutes. I do not think they will get under seven minutes for
:57:10. > :57:13.this. The Americans will be pushing very hard. This is all about Stephen
:57:14. > :57:22.Milne keeping close to Conor O'Dwyer. I would like to see Fraser
:57:23. > :57:27.Holmes swim better in individual races, but he delivers in the relay.
:57:28. > :57:34.He is doing a great job here. Turning first. He has gone off very
:57:35. > :57:40.fast, as has Conor O'Dwyer of the USA. Stephen Milne is in seventh. He
:57:41. > :57:49.has to stay as close as he possibly can. The Russian swimmer is really
:57:50. > :57:58.going well. It is important to stay in contention. Conor O'Dwyer leading
:57:59. > :58:08.for the USA. Thomas Fraser Holmes of Australia is going well. 1.8 seconds
:58:09. > :58:15.down. We cannot give away this much of a lead. It will be very difficult
:58:16. > :58:26.right now. Duncan Scott will get some horrendous waves as he dives
:58:27. > :58:33.in. Not a bad start at all. Now we have Duncan Scott. He has swum 1.30
:58:34. > :58:44.five. The Americans are starting to make some waves. The Japanese put
:58:45. > :58:53.their quick guys first and second. It is USA first, Japan second, and
:58:54. > :59:02.Australia in third. This is a good start from Duncan Scott. Brilliant
:59:03. > :59:09.swimming from the Americans. We have got to get back in medal contention.
:59:10. > :59:22.The Japanese have gone with their fast first two swimmers. The Russian
:59:23. > :59:29.Federation is trying to haul him back as well. With a bit of luck we
:59:30. > :59:39.will be in fourth place. The Australians are slowing down a bit.
:59:40. > :59:43.Ryan Lochte is coming in for the United States later as well. They
:59:44. > :59:49.have got Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps as the next two swimmers.
:59:50. > :59:55.They could do it. The battle is on for silver and bronze and fourth and
:59:56. > :00:03.fifth places at the moment. Very strong from the USA. He is about to
:00:04. > :00:10.hand over to Ryan Lochte. Great Britain are for. That was good from
:00:11. > :00:14.Duncan Scott. He hands over to Dan Wallace, the Commonwealth Games
:00:15. > :00:19.champion. It is really important for Great Britain because we have got
:00:20. > :00:26.James Guy on the final leg, a world champion. He will be chasing Michael
:00:27. > :00:33.Phelps. The USA are five or six metres ahead. Australia are in third
:00:34. > :00:40.and Great Britain are fourth. Japan are second. Duncan Scott did exactly
:00:41. > :00:44.the same time as he did this morning. The Japanese team are
:00:45. > :00:48.hanging in there and the Australians also. Dan Wallace is starting to
:00:49. > :01:04.come through. There is a battle for fourth place.
:01:05. > :01:11.Wallace did accelerate off the wall, now putting in some big effort on
:01:12. > :01:15.the cake. I'm quite happy with his position, I don't think we will get
:01:16. > :01:22.near the USA but we could give James Guy a chance, this is good news. He
:01:23. > :01:28.has streaked ahead, Phelps. Japan in second, Australia third, but they
:01:29. > :01:32.did not put their best swimmer on the team at all and he should be
:01:33. > :01:38.head-to-head with James Guy, so there is a chance. He's starting to
:01:39. > :01:47.bring us in, pretty much equal third. USA, his wheels are falling
:01:48. > :01:55.off really badly. Type take from Phelps. Great Britain now in bronze
:01:56. > :02:01.medal position. We have James Guy, our world champion, in, like a shot.
:02:02. > :02:09.Maqsood of Japan in two. Can James Guy catch up for the sings -- silver
:02:10. > :02:12.medal? Russia has a very strong back in swimmer. James Guy clawing
:02:13. > :02:19.through the field, in third place. The Japanese team in his sights. The
:02:20. > :02:23.great Michael Phelps is cruising to another gold medal and the crowd are
:02:24. > :02:29.all standing, they will get 100 metres. James Guy is coming back
:02:30. > :02:35.very strongly. Looks like he has broken the Russian team, it is now
:02:36. > :02:43.GB versus Japan for the bronze and silver. 606.1 one. Tell you what,
:02:44. > :02:49.James Guy is catching him up. It is too much to do, surely, 1.4 seconds.
:02:50. > :02:55.I don't think he will catch Michael Phelps but he's certainly harrowing
:02:56. > :02:58.at the Japanese in lane two. James Guy comes back very quick in the
:02:59. > :03:02.second half, he is having a shot at Phelps, easing into that lead I
:03:03. > :03:06.would imagine Phelps has gone off relatively easy and will come back
:03:07. > :03:10.in the last 50, he has a fabulous last turn but he must be exalted.
:03:11. > :03:19.Still just in third position, third term from James Guy. Come on! It is
:03:20. > :03:21.called to the USA just now. James Guy bringing team Great Britain into
:03:22. > :03:30.the silver medal position, just about. Wonderful race with the
:03:31. > :03:34.Japanese in two. I think we might get the silver but coming back of
:03:35. > :03:37.the Japanese in the last ten metres. Can he get silver? Called the USA,
:03:38. > :03:43.silver to Great Britain and bronze for Japan. Whatever plastic team
:03:44. > :03:48.effort that was. Great Britain, well done for the fantastic. Great fun
:03:49. > :03:53.James Guy, Michael Phelps taken the gold medal. He is holding on the
:03:54. > :03:57.lame line and James Guy, took something out of him. He is
:03:58. > :04:05.exhausted. You can tell going into the last turn he had nothing left.
:04:06. > :04:10.The champion he is. What a great really and I have to say, the four
:04:11. > :04:17.British swimmers had the swims of their lives. They couldn't have
:04:18. > :04:21.asked for more than that. Stephen you let them out and came home as an
:04:22. > :04:26.Olympic medallist? I can't believe it. I don't know what to say. I'm
:04:27. > :04:30.speechless but I have to give it to these guys, they were absolutely
:04:31. > :04:37.amazing. It was an honour to swim with them and they smashed it up. We
:04:38. > :04:40.can all be proud of ourselves. 12 months we were winning junior
:04:41. > :04:44.medals, could you imagine one year when he would be on the Olympic
:04:45. > :04:47.podium? I was despite a tower slathered worlds last year, so I
:04:48. > :04:54.felt it had to step things up this year. -- slam at -- to how it swam
:04:55. > :04:59.at. To come up with Olympic medals, world champion just that last year,
:05:00. > :05:02.we felt we had one but we didn't know what colour. We fought with
:05:03. > :05:08.everything we have and are delighted with silver. Dan, the selectors took
:05:09. > :05:12.a chance on you and give you a wild card, you certainly paid them back.
:05:13. > :05:17.I was lucky to just make the team but I knew once I was on the team I
:05:18. > :05:23.had to step it up and be back to my best. I think they did that tonight
:05:24. > :05:27.and I'm proud of myself. You should be. James Guy, finished things off
:05:28. > :05:33.and finally got that medal this week. Has it been emotional for you?
:05:34. > :05:37.Hallelujah! The first few days were tough for me. I was going through a
:05:38. > :05:41.bit of an adaptation phase and we changed it and I got faster each
:05:42. > :05:46.time I've raced and finally get a medal it has been a difficult week,
:05:47. > :05:52.it's been tough but I got a medal and the team here is grateful to our
:05:53. > :05:55.youngest guys 23 and has a medal, bring on Tokyo, will be fully grown
:05:56. > :06:00.and ready for the title. Chasing down Phelps and lastly, could you
:06:01. > :06:04.getting? I don't care who I'm racing, I will fight for anyone, I
:06:05. > :06:10.will fight for my country and I could feel getting closer to him but
:06:11. > :06:13.obviously they were two seconds in front but it's difficult to start,
:06:14. > :06:18.but what an honour to race the greatest of all time I couldn't be
:06:19. > :06:22.happier. Congratulations. A great night in a pool for Great Britain,
:06:23. > :06:27.that was their second is over. There is baby boomer, Boomer Phelps a look
:06:28. > :06:33.at that. Fantastic pictures from Michael Phelps celebrating with the
:06:34. > :06:37.family, much more relaxed and he sees the Olympic experience
:06:38. > :06:41.differently this time in his fifth games, an extraordinary thing when
:06:42. > :06:47.you consider what he has achieved since he was 15 in Sydney. This is
:06:48. > :06:53.his personal medal tally. When you see it in the stark terms you really
:06:54. > :07:00.go, wow. 21 gold, two silver and two bronze. It makes him medically and I
:07:01. > :07:03.would argue in essence the greatest Olympian there has ever been,
:07:04. > :07:08.however, the greatest is very much a matter of opinion. Is he your
:07:09. > :07:17.greatest Olympian? Michael Jonzon has it's own thoughts. I want
:07:18. > :07:21.everyone on TV to know it, I am the greatest. There are those who tell
:07:22. > :07:28.you straight. You cannot argue with that. For the rest of us, well, we
:07:29. > :07:32.need to define ourselves. The games combine the Greek religious sense in
:07:33. > :07:39.physical strength and beauty. We are constantly measuring, comparing,
:07:40. > :07:43.contrasting. The champion needs great determination, and implacable
:07:44. > :07:47.will to win and a killer instinct. That is the beauty of sport. Every
:07:48. > :07:56.age produces its heroes. So who is the greatest? Usain Bolt local all
:07:57. > :08:00.the way! History is being made. Standing right on the top with the
:08:01. > :08:04.pretty gold medal. Even amongst all the great one man stands out
:08:05. > :08:10.powerful above them. The 15th Olympic Games has been those aspects
:08:11. > :08:18.games. To the record books tell the true story? A new Olympic and world
:08:19. > :08:28.record. He won the gold he slam, in all seven events he was champion.
:08:29. > :08:32.Michael Phelps's 21st Olympic gold. Here comes the greatest British
:08:33. > :08:37.Olympian. If anyone sees me anywhere near a boat you have my permission
:08:38. > :08:45.to shoot me. Get the gold medal! What a great Olympian. Or is it
:08:46. > :08:58.about what it touches? Faultless. And that is Olympic history. The
:08:59. > :09:04.motion. -- emotion. Hold for Freeman. A moment captured in time.
:09:05. > :09:15.The 100 metres and the Olympic Games. The debate goes on and on and
:09:16. > :09:23.on. But that is the beauty of sport. And if we had all the answers, well,
:09:24. > :09:27.that would be no fun at all. And it is fun to look back at some of the
:09:28. > :09:32.world. It's men and women who have graced these Olympic Games since
:09:33. > :09:35.1896. Before that way back in the 700 BC at Olympia, we didn't have
:09:36. > :09:40.the television pictures in those days to look at the greatest,
:09:41. > :09:43.however, vowing to become the greatest female Olympian from this
:09:44. > :09:48.country ever is Charlotte Dujardin, she and Laura Trott was won two gold
:09:49. > :09:52.medals in London have the opportunity to win a third and maybe
:09:53. > :09:56.a fourth. No British woman has ever got three before. Lee McKenzie is at
:09:57. > :10:00.the equestrian centre because the dressage starts today not for
:10:01. > :10:06.Charlotte, she goes on Thursday, but the events begin and there is a huge
:10:07. > :10:11.amount of optimism in Team GB about this? There certainly is and if you
:10:12. > :10:15.needed your great hands on a couple of days ago, I hope you have your
:10:16. > :10:18.fancy pants on because dressage is a different horse game. Charlotte
:10:19. > :10:23.Dujardin is sitting in the stand just now goes the other British
:10:24. > :10:26.rider coming up but there is a positive atmosphere in the British
:10:27. > :10:30.camp. Let's not forget they've never won a medal in dressage until London
:10:31. > :10:35.2012. For Charlotte to leave with two gold was just a fantastic
:10:36. > :10:39.achievement. She is not the world number 1% to 2012 she's gone from
:10:40. > :10:43.strength to strength, she is world champion, European champion, current
:10:44. > :10:48.Olympic champion and has broken every world records there is with
:10:49. > :10:51.Valegro but she does have competition this year. It will be
:10:52. > :10:54.interesting to see how she goes, she had Carl Hester will start their
:10:55. > :10:59.particular routines and other day. Tomorrow. And I know we have two
:11:00. > :11:05.competitors and there will be new names to most people watching? For a
:11:06. > :11:08.start in 20 minutes is Ben Son Wilton and anyone in dressage Lamote
:11:09. > :11:13.Spencer but this is his first Olympics. He has supernova, horse
:11:14. > :11:20.that gets pick-ups when it's nervous. And sleeps with a mouthful
:11:21. > :11:25.of hay like a pacifier. A quirky horse but they go in 20 minutes, we
:11:26. > :11:29.could see their debut. In event we've spoken about William Fox-Pitt,
:11:30. > :11:32.understandably he has taken the headlines over the past ten but
:11:33. > :11:36.Fiona Bigwood, she has come through a really tough time. A couple of
:11:37. > :11:40.years ago she had a really bad injury and now ride with an eye
:11:41. > :11:44.patch because she still has such bad double vision. It is her first
:11:45. > :11:49.Olympics but she is another really experienced dressage rider and
:11:50. > :11:54.husband competes for Denmark today. We wish them both well. Explain the
:11:55. > :11:57.basics because this is the individual event we are starting
:11:58. > :12:01.with and it combines for the team event as well? First up what is
:12:02. > :12:09.happening over my shoulder is the Grand Prix, and from that we have
:12:10. > :12:14.the Grand Prix special, which is a more technical test, and then the
:12:15. > :12:17.top 18 riders from that go into the freestyle, the one which captured
:12:18. > :12:22.everyone's imagination, the dressage to music, the dancing horses as the
:12:23. > :12:28.tabloids call them. We have three separate tests between now and the
:12:29. > :12:32.beginning of next week and then the medals are debited from the top
:12:33. > :12:36.teams and individual writers. When it comes the dancing horses I'm sure
:12:37. > :12:40.we will hear some samba music to try and win over the crowd? We are, I've
:12:41. > :12:46.seen the test Charlotte will perform next week in the freestyle and, yes,
:12:47. > :12:52.she has gone very samba. A real Brazilian team to that. She really
:12:53. > :12:57.into her cartoons and she had had to train your dragon before, this one
:12:58. > :13:01.is much more samba -based. I will look forward to that, but not today.
:13:02. > :13:05.There's plenty going on and I'm sure you'll keep us up-to-date. Thank
:13:06. > :13:09.you. In 15 minutes we will go to the men's time trial, Chris Froome
:13:10. > :13:15.trying to do a Bradley Wiggins in effect, to win the Tour de France,
:13:16. > :13:17.which he did for the third time, and also the Olympic time trial in the
:13:18. > :13:28.same summer. One of his most beautiful wins in
:13:29. > :13:32.his career. Head over the bars, leaves for every second of
:13:33. > :13:39.advantage, Chris Froome punches the air. This Tour de France is turning
:13:40. > :13:46.into a mighty battle already. Chris Froome, leader of the Tour de
:13:47. > :13:51.France, he's off his bike. Running. This is an unprecedented situation.
:13:52. > :13:57.Here he could lose serious time. I've never seen anything like this
:13:58. > :14:02.in my life. Chris Froome attacks. Again losing time on Chris Froome.
:14:03. > :14:06.He or he has one stage win, now he has two. And Chris Froome wins the
:14:07. > :14:13.time trial. Chris Froome becomes the first Briton to retain the Tour de
:14:14. > :14:17.France title. He wins his third tour, sky at winning for a fourth
:14:18. > :14:25.time, what are Tour de France this has been for Great Britain. I do
:14:26. > :14:31.feel as if winning the tour this year was done much more in a
:14:32. > :14:34.complete way, for example, on dissent and on the crosswinds on
:14:35. > :14:39.flat stages with the likes of the sprinters and also obviously the
:14:40. > :14:44.strength of the team was really a clear sign to everyone this year
:14:45. > :14:50.that once I got into the yellow jersey it was pretty hard for the
:14:51. > :14:56.rivals to do anything to separate me from my team-mates. Quote of the
:14:57. > :15:00.Olympic Games fit into the grand scheme of things for your? How big a
:15:01. > :15:08.deal would be to wear a gold medal? It is a big deal to me. I am
:15:09. > :15:14.extremely motivated for the time trial because it is that one effort
:15:15. > :15:21.you can gauge and you have the control over. The time trial for me
:15:22. > :15:28.is the more realistic chance of being in for a shop with a medal. --
:15:29. > :15:32.shot. He is certainly one of the favourites. There is Chris getting
:15:33. > :15:37.ready. This is the man who has won three Tour de France titles, the
:15:38. > :15:39.most recently this summer. In this event you need to be an all-rounder,
:15:40. > :15:52.our climate and speedster as well. He will be taking part with Geraint
:15:53. > :16:00.Thomas who lost some skin after the crash in the road race. But he says
:16:01. > :16:04.his legs are all right. We will be looking to see both of them and we
:16:05. > :16:12.will be going to that in about 15 minutes' time. We will keep you
:16:13. > :16:20.updated on the boxing. The other day we saw a 19-year-old world champion
:16:21. > :16:24.from Cuba to beat the Britain by a single point. He has been the most
:16:25. > :16:30.stylish boxer of the games so far. They call him the small giant. He is
:16:31. > :17:02.now into the quarterfinals. The 49 kilograms and for a place on
:17:03. > :17:07.the podium. The Cuban is just 19 years of age, the reigning world
:17:08. > :17:12.champion gold medallist. The tournament number one seed. He is
:17:13. > :17:18.being put under pressure at the start of this opening round by the
:17:19. > :17:24.35-year-old from Kenya. He is number 36 in the world and he had an
:17:25. > :17:28.impressive split decision victory in eliminating the number eight seed
:17:29. > :17:37.from China after having a buy in his opening round. The tactics are plain
:17:38. > :17:41.to see from the Kenyan. You have got to close the gap down on the sky and
:17:42. > :17:48.put pressure on him. You have got to restrict the movement. That is what
:17:49. > :17:55.he does, in and out with his feet, he is extremely talented and
:17:56. > :17:59.skilful. The Kenyan has the right tactic, but he has got to get
:18:00. > :18:01.quicker with his feet and put more pressure on. He has to throw the
:18:02. > :18:16.punches. You allow Joahnys Argilagos to get
:18:17. > :18:27.into a rhythm and he is extremely difficult to beat.
:18:28. > :18:32.At this pace and distance the Cuban maestro will be in and out as he
:18:33. > :18:54.likes. Joahnys Argilagos is finding his
:18:55. > :18:59.range and his rhythm and all Warui can do is weather the storm. The
:19:00. > :19:09.first round is crucial in this tournament. The Cubans always get
:19:10. > :19:14.the first round under their belt. If you allow them to dictate the pace,
:19:15. > :19:18.they are in their comfort zone, and that is what is happening here now.
:19:19. > :19:25.Joahnys Argilagos is dictating the pace. He is moving lovely, in and
:19:26. > :19:31.out with his feet. Warui started off quite well on the front foot, but he
:19:32. > :19:35.has slowed the speed down and that is allowing Joahnys Argilagos to do
:19:36. > :19:45.what he wants to do. Look how confident he is. But that is a big
:19:46. > :19:46.right hand from Warui right on the Bell, just to let Joahnys Argilagos
:19:47. > :20:04.know he is still in the contest! A terrific opening round from the
:20:05. > :20:08.man in red. They will be more than pleased in that corner. He did some
:20:09. > :20:15.terrific work. In and out with his feet. Back to the safety distance
:20:16. > :20:21.after he lands his shot. Warui started well. The tactics were good
:20:22. > :20:27.from the Kenyan in the first few minutes, but then he slowed the
:20:28. > :20:30.speed down. All three judges favouring the work of the number one
:20:31. > :20:50.seed. Into the second round. We got a
:20:51. > :20:55.glimpse of some of Joahnys Argilagos's incredibly talented
:20:56. > :21:01.team-mates, including Ramirez, who has not opened his account yet. But
:21:02. > :21:05.his team-mate in his second appearance in Rio 2016 is producing
:21:06. > :21:13.pretty much a masterclass in this quarterfinal. Warui knows what he
:21:14. > :21:17.has to do. He is trying to close down the distance and make life
:21:18. > :21:22.uncomfortable for this talented teenager, known as the tiny giant,
:21:23. > :21:26.but that is easier said than done when you have a man who can navigate
:21:27. > :21:35.the boxing ring as effortlessly as the man in red. Warui has to work
:21:36. > :21:39.off that front foot and change angles occasionally. His feet are
:21:40. > :21:44.far too static at the moment. There is hardly any movement from the
:21:45. > :21:51.waist. He is not avoiding the shots, he is keeping his hands high, but
:21:52. > :21:54.his feet are letting him down. The pace is suiting the Cuban down to
:21:55. > :21:59.the ground and that is why his hands are low and he is on the back foot
:22:00. > :22:08.and his feet are coming square. The Kenyan is not doing what he should
:22:09. > :22:14.do. Three times quarterfinalist at the African games. Now he is trying
:22:15. > :22:19.to work away to the body of the man in red. That was better from the
:22:20. > :22:27.Kenyan. He has got to keep the attack going. Cuban boxers sometimes
:22:28. > :22:35.do this after they get that all-important first round in the
:22:36. > :22:39.bag. Ramirez does it as well. They will stand still and invite friends
:22:40. > :22:49.from their opponent. That could give them some encouragement. But the
:22:50. > :22:52.opportunity for Warui, it is the thinking game and you have to notice
:22:53. > :22:58.and react if your opponent slows it down and you have to jump on them.
:22:59. > :23:03.But now Joahnys Argilagos has gone back on that back foot. Lovely work.
:23:04. > :23:09.He took a bit of a breather standing still on the ropes and Warui did
:23:10. > :23:18.take advantage. But he is up on his toes again now. Joahnys Argilagos is
:23:19. > :23:26.really enjoying this. A good right hand to the body. Warui is reluctant
:23:27. > :23:29.to engage in exchanges, it is almost as if he is waiting for Joahnys
:23:30. > :23:35.Argilagos to stop before he let's go. He has spent a lot of time
:23:36. > :23:40.repelling attacks and his workrate is not as high as it needs to be for
:23:41. > :23:52.an educated, pressure fighter like Warui. Moments of success once again
:23:53. > :23:55.for the man in blue, but one suspects it will be another
:23:56. > :24:04.unanimous round for Joahnys Argilagos. The Kenyan has got to do
:24:05. > :24:09.better. It is easier said than done, but his feet is letting him down.
:24:10. > :24:16.This was not bad from the Kenyan and he kept it going. A lovely straight
:24:17. > :24:21.left hand from Joahnys Argilagos and then he dips out of the way and
:24:22. > :24:32.avoids the shot. Lovely boxing. Very comfortable. He is leading so
:24:33. > :24:42.comfortably. The reigning world champion in complete control and in
:24:43. > :24:49.a commanding position. Into the third and final round we go. The man
:24:50. > :24:54.wearing blue is facing an uphill task as he tries to secure himself a
:24:55. > :25:02.place on the Olympic medal podium in the light flyweight division. He has
:25:03. > :25:10.conceded the opening two rounds. The man in red just scored with a lovely
:25:11. > :25:27.right hand. Further into the competition you appreciate how
:25:28. > :25:40.well he is doing. He is a special talent. World Junior champion in
:25:41. > :25:47.2013. He put in another good right hand into the rib cage of Warui.
:25:48. > :25:51.Slowing down perhaps even more now in this third round because he has
:25:52. > :26:00.taken a fair amount of punishment. It is almost defeat by 1000
:26:01. > :26:06.pinpricks from Joahnys Argilagos. It would drain a man's elegy tank and
:26:07. > :26:12.dispirit him as well. He is trying to muster an attack, but he is
:26:13. > :26:19.having real difficulty trying to close the gap. The Kenyan is really
:26:20. > :26:24.struggling. Olympic boxing is all about speed and skill and making
:26:25. > :26:28.your opponent miss and the Cuban is demonstrating this. Lovely boxing.
:26:29. > :26:34.He can switch from orthodox to southpaw. He can box from the
:26:35. > :26:38.inside, at distance. Very clever. It will take a really good boxer to
:26:39. > :26:45.beat him. He is effective on the front foot as well. Once again all
:26:46. > :26:52.Warui can do is cover up and hope the storm subsides. Deep into the
:26:53. > :27:01.final round now. That final right hand to the body looked as though it
:27:02. > :27:06.hurt Warui. If you stand and trade with Warui, you bring him into the
:27:07. > :27:11.contest. For a moment in the second round Joahnys Argilagos did that. He
:27:12. > :27:21.is doing it now and it brings Warui in. And then he is back to safety
:27:22. > :27:27.again this Cuban. Showing Warui who is the governor inside the boxing
:27:28. > :27:35.ring. Warui is trying to muster some fans of his own in the hope of
:27:36. > :27:42.landing that final knockout blow. The final furious exchange. Right on
:27:43. > :27:49.top of the logo to conclude this quarterfinal. What a wonderful
:27:50. > :27:55.display by Joahnys Argilagos. There is Ramirez in the forefront of the
:27:56. > :28:00.shot. He is the reigning Olympic champion. He manned the title, the
:28:01. > :28:09.man in the grey sweat suit, when he was a teenager. This man could well
:28:10. > :28:16.emulate him. Play into the crowd at the end. He brought Warui into the
:28:17. > :28:21.contest. As if to say, I can box your style as well and beat you to
:28:22. > :28:26.the punches. Some great work by the Cuban in the last 40 seconds. A
:28:27. > :28:31.perfect performance for two and a half rounds. In the last round he
:28:32. > :28:36.played to the crowd and brought his opponent into it, but overall what a
:28:37. > :28:51.talent. One of the most talented boxers here at the games. A pleasure
:28:52. > :29:07.to watch. Ladies and gentlemen, by a unanimous decision, Joahnys
:29:08. > :29:11.Argilagos. So Joahnys Argilagos is through to the medal stages of the
:29:12. > :29:17.49 kilograms light flyweight division after producing a masterful
:29:18. > :29:22.performance over the Kenyan veteran Peter Mungai Warui. Sportingly
:29:23. > :29:31.holding the rope is open for his defeated opponent. We will see more
:29:32. > :29:36.of this man. It would be a very good bet if he was still here on the 14th
:29:37. > :29:47.of August for the light flyweight final.
:29:48. > :29:56.It underlines how well Galal Yafai performed against them. The men's
:29:57. > :30:01.time trial is out on the road once again. Chris Froome will be riding
:30:02. > :30:08.last, but who realistically are the main challengers for the medals
:30:09. > :30:12.alongside him today? The first wave of riders are already
:30:13. > :30:16.out on the course and then there is a small pause and they send out the
:30:17. > :30:21.last 18 and that is where the medallists will come from, all the
:30:22. > :30:27.main contenders, including Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin. Very
:30:28. > :30:31.quickly we will reflect back on the Kristin Armstrong gold medal in the
:30:32. > :30:36.women's time trial. She came through afterwards very emotional, she had
:30:37. > :30:38.just been with her young boy Lucas. Three times Olympic champion, a
:30:39. > :30:47.remarkable athlete. Yes, to bid the rest of the world is
:30:48. > :30:52.one thing, to retire and come back and do it at this level is another.
:30:53. > :30:56.It was nip and tuck all the way, she managed to get over the climbs and
:30:57. > :31:01.the obstacles but she showed the road race, the team job she did,
:31:02. > :31:05.that she has perform. She was saying with ten kilometres to go, on her
:31:06. > :31:09.radio, her coach said in her ear, now is the time to decide what
:31:10. > :31:13.colour you want this medal to be, you have to dig deep and she really
:31:14. > :31:18.responded. We will shortly see the rest of the men setting off in the
:31:19. > :31:23.second wave. What do you think they will learn from seeing Kristin
:31:24. > :31:26.Armstrong's efforts? They will all have looked at the course but it
:31:27. > :31:30.would have gone out of the window when it started to rain. Everyone
:31:31. > :31:34.has been cautious on the first technical descent of the day but
:31:35. > :31:38.what I have learned from the course, particularly from the women's event,
:31:39. > :31:43.this is a time trial course, despite the obstacles, so the likes of Tom
:31:44. > :31:48.Dumoulin will gain an edge, Chris Broome is great in a time trial even
:31:49. > :31:56.if it is black, but the podium could be tied. Rohan Bopanna is could
:31:57. > :32:02.throw in a surprise. Everyone will recognise the likes of Fabian
:32:03. > :32:07.Cancellara and other champions, but they haven't done a lot this year. I
:32:08. > :32:11.think Fabian Cancellara was disappointed with the Tour de France
:32:12. > :32:14.but when you have names like his and Martin, you never write them off and
:32:15. > :32:18.the roads between the clients here are not technical at all, they are
:32:19. > :32:22.real time trial to rain and I think they will fare well. And it depends
:32:23. > :32:26.how everybody has come out of the road race. Not all of them did
:32:27. > :32:32.finish, but certainly Geraint Thomas did. He is a late call-up because
:32:33. > :32:35.not every nation took their spots. How'd you think Grant Thomas and
:32:36. > :32:42.Kristian will pull up after a tough road race? -- Chris Froome. There
:32:43. > :32:44.are a lot of filters you have to put it through, Geraint Thomas working
:32:45. > :32:49.for Chris Froome for a couple of weeks before they got there, he was
:32:50. > :32:53.two minutes then in the time trial. Here, he can ride for himself and
:32:54. > :33:00.has a good chance of getting them out. Geraint Thomas will be coming
:33:01. > :33:03.shortly, so we will hand you to Simon Brotherton.
:33:04. > :33:06.SIMON BROTHERTON: He will be the next to leave the starters' Gate.
:33:07. > :33:12.The rest of them completing the warm up process in the start finish area.
:33:13. > :33:16.On the course, Tim Wellens from Belgium has been the fastest rider
:33:17. > :33:23.through the time checks up until now. He is on the first of the two
:33:24. > :33:31.climbs. This is the short, steep one. The fastest rider to go through
:33:32. > :33:34.at the moment is Leopold Konig, Leopold Konig has started to wind it
:33:35. > :33:46.up the longer the time trial has gone on. Seven seconds slower is
:33:47. > :33:51.Michal Kwiatkowski. I think Leopold Konig will have the fastest time
:33:52. > :33:54.from this first wave of riders. A second group is containing all of
:33:55. > :34:01.the favourites. Over the top goes Tim Wellens and as you can see, 8.85
:34:02. > :34:06.seconds down. Geraint Thomas is on the starter's ramp, ready to go,
:34:07. > :34:11.ahead of him, 54.5 kilometres in this Olympic time trial. Geraint
:34:12. > :34:17.Thomas, who was given a late entry into this event, is of an under way
:34:18. > :34:22.on the seafront. The weather, the best it has been so far today. Let's
:34:23. > :34:28.hope that the rain clouds stay away. It is still blustery, but now
:34:29. > :34:32.predominantly dry when certainly for much of the morning, conditions have
:34:33. > :34:37.been pretty awful for the riders, particularly for the women's race.
:34:38. > :34:40.So it will be very interesting to see what sort of right Geraint
:34:41. > :34:44.Thomas can pull out of the bag. He was very strong in the road race at
:34:45. > :34:48.the weekend, among the leading riders, before crashing on that
:34:49. > :34:55.final descent back in towards Copacabana. Still to come, Chris
:34:56. > :35:02.Froome, he will be heading off at 22, the last ride on the road.
:35:03. > :35:06.Excellent year, Geraint Thomas. The Paris- Nice overall win in the
:35:07. > :35:10.spring and of course, he also has two Olympic gold medals to his name
:35:11. > :35:15.from the track in the team pursuit in Beijing and in London four years
:35:16. > :35:22.ago. But for him these days, it is very much about the road. Meanwhile,
:35:23. > :35:27.a good many of these riders are well into their ride and heading into the
:35:28. > :35:31.closing stages, with only about ten kilometres to go. The next rider to
:35:32. > :35:37.head off will be Julian Alaphilippe, one of the real rising stars of the
:35:38. > :35:41.peloton. The 24-year-old came close to a stage win in the Tour de
:35:42. > :35:46.France, a very consistent performer and has been very good in the
:35:47. > :35:53.Hillier Classics races in the last couple of seasons. So Julian
:35:54. > :35:59.Alaphilippe away from the starter's Gate. The overall winner of the tour
:36:00. > :36:02.of California this year as well and fourth in the Olympic road race on
:36:03. > :36:08.Saturday. So he is in great form here.
:36:09. > :36:30.Final adjustments made for Chris Froome. It has to be right to the
:36:31. > :36:34.millimetre. Meanwhile, we are back with Tim Wellens out on the course.
:36:35. > :36:45.He was the last rider of the first wave of riders.
:36:46. > :36:50.And he has been among the fastest all the way round so far. Geraint
:36:51. > :36:55.Thomas is now a couple of minutes into his right. The first time check
:36:56. > :37:00.we will get on him will be at the ten kilometre mark. So it will be a
:37:01. > :37:09.little while yet, several minutes. It comes at the top of the first
:37:10. > :37:14.climb. Primoz Roglic, not a household name, the Slovenian, but
:37:15. > :37:17.certainly want to keep an eye on here in this time trial if you are
:37:18. > :37:22.looking for an outsider, some want to upset the apple cart a little
:37:23. > :37:32.bit. The 26-year-old won the time trial stage in Chianti this year. He
:37:33. > :37:38.was third in the individual time trial stage of the two order Poland,
:37:39. > :37:47.so is form a strong -- tour of Poland. You can just see the energy
:37:48. > :37:53.gel poking out of his shorts, it is a very easy place to get hold of.
:37:54. > :37:57.Back with Geraint Thomas. On the coast road, doing the small blip
:37:58. > :38:05.they have to do after about three kilometres, to get them around the
:38:06. > :38:08.headland. Well into the circuit now. Thomas, of course, only found out in
:38:09. > :38:14.the last day or so, only had it confirmed, that he was going to be
:38:15. > :38:21.able to take part in this race. He just likes racing bikes, though,
:38:22. > :38:24.doesn't he? The form we know is showing in that image, because you
:38:25. > :38:31.don't know how much that road is climbing and he makes it look like
:38:32. > :38:45.he is riding on the flat. The next rider to leave the starter's Gate,
:38:46. > :38:50.from Spain. He did an absolutely monumental turn on the road race the
:38:51. > :38:57.other day, Jonathan Castroviejo. It will have cost him, it is reasonable
:38:58. > :39:02.to say. That kind of team riding gives enough for the day and this
:39:03. > :39:08.event as well. Simon Geschke has been riding very well, from the
:39:09. > :39:12.first batch. Jonathan Castroviejo, by the way, a top-10 finisher in
:39:13. > :39:18.this race in London four years ago, ninth position. We ride with Leopold
:39:19. > :39:21.Konig, who spends his year racing with Team Sky, a top-10 finisher in
:39:22. > :39:28.all three of the grand tour who macro in his career so far and the
:39:29. > :39:35.time checks that all the first batch have gone through, Konig is the
:39:36. > :39:38.quickest at this point. It is all about pacing yourself in an event
:39:39. > :39:43.like this. The first checks for our interest and to see who has put
:39:44. > :39:51.themselves out of contention, but being fastest at the first two time
:39:52. > :39:56.checks know -- by no means guarantees being the fastest at the
:39:57. > :40:03.finish. Happy to ride out on his road bike today. Quickly lost time
:40:04. > :40:13.and is well aware of that. Tim Wellens has that high cadence style
:40:14. > :40:20.all the way through. From Belarus, Siutsiu. Very experienced, in his
:40:21. > :40:36.30s now. Formerly with Team Sky, a stage winner in the jee Road Italia
:40:37. > :40:41.-- in the Giro d'Italia. Four times Italian champion. They are also
:40:42. > :40:47.represented by Kiryienka, who is the world champion. One of the riders
:40:48. > :40:53.who helped Chris Froome through the month of July in the Tour de France,
:40:54. > :40:58.as did Darren Thomas, but very much trying to beat him today. They have
:40:59. > :41:02.heard of busy couple of months, haven't they? -- they have had a
:41:03. > :41:13.busy couple of months. Leopold Konig, I think, will be
:41:14. > :41:19.coming up towards the fourth time check at the 44 point for kilometre
:41:20. > :41:27.mark before too long. He will not be there for a minute or two.
:41:28. > :41:30.Meanwhile, back to the second group of riders, Maciej Bodnar from
:41:31. > :41:40.Poland, the second of the Polish riders in this field. Bodnar when
:41:41. > :41:47.the individual time strange win in the two are Japan this year. He was
:41:48. > :41:52.a rider who got away in Montpelier in France, when Chris Froome stole
:41:53. > :41:56.away and grabbed a handful of seconds' advantage over his rival,
:41:57. > :42:04.when nobody thought he would at the end of a flat stage. That was an
:42:05. > :42:07.exciting stage. A lot of surprises in the sheer's Tour de France,
:42:08. > :42:13.particularly running up the mountain, of course, which Chris
:42:14. > :42:19.Froome did. And our first rider coming up towards the finishing
:42:20. > :42:28.line, the time set to beat, Iranagh from Iran is the rider. So our
:42:29. > :42:32.prerace guess was 1:18 to complete this course for the best riders and
:42:33. > :42:36.I think they will be quicker than that. The rain has held off a little
:42:37. > :42:40.bit in the last few minutes and that first corner is drying up and they
:42:41. > :42:51.are saving a second on one bend, I would say. Michal Kwiatkowski
:42:52. > :42:54.climbing for the last time today. Is that Caruso, the Italian, in front
:42:55. > :42:58.of him? It is not going to be Leopold Konig, he is riding very
:42:59. > :43:05.well. It can only be Darmian are Caruso. Meanwhile, we are back at
:43:06. > :43:13.the start with Jan Barta, the Czech rider. So Leopold Konig, the other
:43:14. > :43:21.Czech rider, going very well but Jan Barta, another who rode the Tour de
:43:22. > :43:27.France last month. Four times the national road time trial champion of
:43:28. > :43:31.the Czech Republic. Yes, it is Caruso. Vincenzo Nibali not here, of
:43:32. > :43:36.course, flew back to Italy for surgery after the road race on
:43:37. > :43:41.Saturday. Here comes Dan Craven from the media. He was the first rider
:43:42. > :43:44.of, not the first to reach the finishing line but that will be a
:43:45. > :43:49.welcome sight, as he comes around the corner and sees the finishing
:43:50. > :43:56.line no more than 100 metres away. One final sprint up towards the line
:43:57. > :44:03.and Dan Craven can rest up, having completed the course in one hour and
:44:04. > :44:09.27 minutes and 47 seconds. Dan Craven and his beard go into
:44:10. > :44:14.history. In Maka delayed he has been an entertaining rider -- he has been
:44:15. > :44:21.an entertaining rider in these Olympic Games. Caruso is not
:44:22. > :44:25.enjoying himself out there. He has lost three minutes to Michal
:44:26. > :44:32.Kwiatkowski. The next rider to start is Nelson Oliveira from Portugal.
:44:33. > :44:35.None of the riders are going to enjoy themselves today but some are
:44:36. > :44:40.going to do it faster than others. He came third in the first of the
:44:41. > :44:46.time trials in the Tour de France, Nelson Oliveira, the one won by Tom
:44:47. > :44:49.Dumoulin. It gives you some indication of his recent form.
:44:50. > :44:54.Meanwhile, coming into the finishing straight, another one of the early
:44:55. > :44:55.finishers here. Not a rider who will trouble the top of the leaderboard
:44:56. > :45:23.for too long. Nearly five minutes ahead of
:45:24. > :45:28.Iranagh, Christopher Jensen. He came from nowhere, he must have powered
:45:29. > :45:32.towards the end. That is extremely quick. Seventh and fifth at the two
:45:33. > :45:37.previous checks, and that is without all of the riders coming through, so
:45:38. > :45:46.a fantastic rider for -- ride from him. It wasn't Kristian Jensen I was
:45:47. > :45:50.expecting. But now Georg Preidler has gone quicker than the Dane. So
:45:51. > :45:57.the lead is changing hands very, very quickly. Soak your Frieda is
:45:58. > :46:01.the new leader -- Georg Preidler. Sepulveda over the line, second
:46:02. > :46:08.quickest but over three minutes down. Here is Roehampton is from
:46:09. > :46:12.Australia. Had the yellow jersey for a day in the Tour de France and he
:46:13. > :46:16.could go well here. I think he could, he was right up in the final
:46:17. > :46:20.time trial of the Tour de France, fifth position and having looked at
:46:21. > :46:24.the course, I don't think the climbs will cause him as much of a problem
:46:25. > :46:26.as we originally thought so he will have worked it out. Dark horse for a
:46:27. > :46:38.medal. This course is not quite as hilly as
:46:39. > :46:43.we were expecting it to be. It is severe. It is about 15 minutes of
:46:44. > :46:47.climbing out of an hour and a quarter of racing. An obstacle
:46:48. > :46:55.course for sure, but there is plenty of flat land to make up time. He
:46:56. > :46:59.looks mightily relieved to have crossed the finishing line. Now the
:47:00. > :47:19.Moroccan rider. Lahsaini is the African road time
:47:20. > :47:33.trial champion. Well down the leaderboard already. Nine minutes
:47:34. > :47:42.down. The current leader is Priedler. Jon Izaguirre from Spain.
:47:43. > :47:51.A stage winner in the Tour de France last month. A very handy rider. Not
:47:52. > :47:55.quite as big a name as some of the other Spanish riders, but certainly
:47:56. > :48:04.someone to keep an eye on. He is very capable. Absolutely so. He
:48:05. > :48:15.could do something on a course like this. The road is still very wet out
:48:16. > :48:19.there under the foliage. Changeable weather conditions. This is Geraint
:48:20. > :48:37.Thomas on the first climb, the Grumari. Let's see how he tackled
:48:38. > :48:42.this one. He has got to beat. 15.45 is the fastest so far at that point.
:48:43. > :48:50.A bit different to the Tour de France because there is nobody there
:48:51. > :48:59.on these climes. Good pictures for everybody else around the world.
:49:00. > :49:15.Twice fifth in the World Championship. 100 metres to go.
:49:16. > :49:29.Grivko's time will be the second fastest. I think it is reasonable to
:49:30. > :49:33.deduce from this that 1.15 or 1.14 will be the winning time today. So,
:49:34. > :49:43.very quick despite the conditions here. The cause is largely made up
:49:44. > :49:50.of roads like this. Geraint Thomas set the fastest time at the first
:49:51. > :49:55.time check at the moment. He was 26 seconds better than Tim Wellens. Tim
:49:56. > :50:15.Wellens will not be the ultimate marker for sure. The new leader in
:50:16. > :50:20.the clubhouse from Germany. A good ride from Geschke. It might keep him
:50:21. > :50:26.there for awhile, but he will not be among the medals in the end. This is
:50:27. > :50:30.Fabian Cancellara, one last shot at Olympic glory in his long and
:50:31. > :50:41.illustrious career. Previously the Olympic champion in 2008. His form
:50:42. > :50:45.looked very good on the road race on Saturday. Fabian Cancellara can
:50:46. > :50:50.never be discounted against the watch. Disappointing in the Tour de
:50:51. > :51:00.France, disappointing for his last one. On the decline in the road race
:51:01. > :51:06.he fared pretty well. He will enjoy every aspect of this course. He is a
:51:07. > :51:11.fantastic bike and let at his best. He will need to be today in these
:51:12. > :51:19.changeable conditions. A picture of concentration. Top four is a
:51:20. > :51:24.reasonable expectation for him. He will have to work hard to get onto
:51:25. > :51:37.the podium. But you can never write him off.
:51:38. > :51:52.He has not had a happy time out there, but certainly not through
:51:53. > :52:04.lack of effort. He gets the prize for the fastest road bike. Nearly
:52:05. > :52:09.five minutes down on Geschke. Tony Martin from Germany. Silver four
:52:10. > :52:17.years ago behind Bradley Wiggins. Three times the world time trial
:52:18. > :52:23.champion. A threat to win another medal today. You can almost take
:52:24. > :52:28.what I have said about Fabian Cancellara and apply almost the same
:52:29. > :52:33.sentence to this guy. His form is not the best we have ever seen. He
:52:34. > :52:40.was climbing really well in the road race, so he will be up for it, that
:52:41. > :52:47.is for sure. Just three riders to go after this man here, now that Tony
:52:48. > :52:50.Martin is on his way. Vasil Kiryienka, Tom Dumoulin and Chris
:52:51. > :52:55.Froome I the only riders still to get out on the road. They are in
:52:56. > :53:11.that order. The world champion will go next. Meanwhile we are riding
:53:12. > :53:15.with Bodnar of Poland. Still heading in the general direction of the
:53:16. > :53:22.first climb. If you missed our coverage earlier on, he had a
:53:23. > :53:29.terrible start, he has a whole in his suit on his shoulder and he fell
:53:30. > :53:33.under very first corner of the race. The first thing he did was get up
:53:34. > :53:42.and stick his shades on. He did not give up, he has got stuck in and his
:53:43. > :53:46.time in the end was not bad. Now the world champion, Vasil Kiryienka from
:53:47. > :53:51.Belarus. So often a usable team-mate for the likes of Chris Froome, but
:53:52. > :54:00.today very much out to topple him and claim the Olympic gold medal. He
:54:01. > :54:05.was 12th four years ago, but he won the world title in Richmond last
:54:06. > :54:09.autumn and he also finished third before in the World Championship in
:54:10. > :54:15.this event, so he is a very consistent performer against the
:54:16. > :54:18.watch. Unlike the person we are watching now. Almost impossible to
:54:19. > :54:25.tell from body language what kind of form he is in. This is Chris Froome
:54:26. > :54:28.getting ready to go. This is the hardest bit of the time trial,
:54:29. > :54:34.waiting before it is time to go to work. But he is used to the
:54:35. > :54:40.pressure. To be honest he has had a fantastic year that this would just
:54:41. > :54:44.pop it off. We spoke to him last Sunday about the Olympic Games
:54:45. > :54:50.coming up and he said he was very clearly focused on the time trial.
:54:51. > :54:56.That is when his eyes lit up. Of the two, that is the one he was
:54:57. > :55:00.concentrating on. But he is going to struggle against this guy, Tom
:55:01. > :55:05.Dumoulin, the favourite for me. He had a problem with a broken wrist, I
:55:06. > :55:11.am not sure if that is healed. The favourite for the day. He had a
:55:12. > :55:16.great Tour de France, a winner of two stages. In many people's I see
:55:17. > :55:21.is the favourite today on this course and given the year that he
:55:22. > :55:28.has had. This looks like Leopold Konig coming into the finish. He is
:55:29. > :55:34.going to set a fastest time. The rider from the Czech Republic will
:55:35. > :55:37.go to the top of the leaderboard. Almost half a minute quicker than
:55:38. > :56:06.Simon Geschke. Leopold Konig is the fastest at the
:56:07. > :56:10.moment. We wait for Chris Froome to get under way. Chris Froome can
:56:11. > :56:16.thank Bradley Wiggins for this pole position. Radley Wiggins claimed the
:56:17. > :56:25.gold medal at Hampton Court on a never to be forgotten day four years
:56:26. > :56:28.ago at London 2012. Can Chris Froome emulate Bradley Wiggins and turn
:56:29. > :56:35.bronze from four years ago into a gold medal today. The winner of the
:56:36. > :56:40.Tour de France, hoping to hold onto that form. He needs a blistering
:56:41. > :56:44.right, but this course does suit him. He has got a chance and Chris
:56:45. > :56:50.is under way in the Olympic time trial. He bursts out of the box
:56:51. > :56:58.coming he knows he can rest on the first corner, so let's get it out of
:56:59. > :57:02.the way. The way it is seeded the winning nations get the pole
:57:03. > :57:06.position of the race. He drives through the cobbles there. I think
:57:07. > :57:13.we can expect an aggressive ride from him, he desperately wants to be
:57:14. > :57:17.in the lead on the first time check. It will be an all or nothing effort
:57:18. > :57:31.from him, you could see that on that first corner. Here comes one of his
:57:32. > :57:36.team-mates, Kwiatkowski. He was the fastest in a couple of the time
:57:37. > :57:42.checks earlier on and has hung in there and is third fastest, half a
:57:43. > :57:52.minute down on the quickest time. I would not say anything about
:57:53. > :57:56.selections, it is that they use world rankings. They also look at
:57:57. > :58:01.current form and move it about so that we have the very best riders at
:58:02. > :58:12.the end. There is confirmation of the leaderboard as it stands. It
:58:13. > :58:21.will change. This is Damiano Caruso. Italy without Vincenzo Nibali in
:58:22. > :58:26.this race today. Caruso is cheered on by the crowd, increasing in size
:58:27. > :58:32.all the time. Over four minutes down on the current leading time. We have
:58:33. > :58:41.had the first few riders of that second group and Geraint Thomas is
:58:42. > :58:52.leading by 13 seconds. That bodes well for him. Geraint Thomas has
:58:53. > :58:58.already overtaken the rider from Canada. He caught the man who
:58:59. > :59:06.started a minute and a half in front of him already. It is a really good
:59:07. > :59:12.start to this time trial from Geraint Thomas. He is locked into
:59:13. > :59:15.that position now, heads down. You can see the energy gel on the
:59:16. > :59:21.right-hand side of his shorts for easy access. A lot of riders prefer
:59:22. > :59:27.just to have water in the bottle so if necessary they can squirt it on
:59:28. > :59:31.themselves to cool off. He was really stunned at the end of the
:59:32. > :59:39.road race, he was almost in the shake-up for the medals. He crashed
:59:40. > :59:44.on the descent. As I was saying earlier, that tarmac is only two
:59:45. > :59:50.metres wide, so it is difficult to negotiate some corners. Some sharp
:59:51. > :59:54.edges as well. Tim Wellens has found it tough to sustain the level of
:59:55. > :00:01.intensity he was showing earlier. He was the fastest for some time among
:00:02. > :00:06.the first wave of riders. But not so at the end, the seventh quickest
:00:07. > :00:12.from that group of riders. Leopold Konig is the fastest at the moment.
:00:13. > :00:21.He is sitting in the hot seat. Not such a hot seat on a day like this!
:00:22. > :00:29.A mildly moist and lukewarm seat! Absolutely. Geraint Thomas is the
:00:30. > :00:35.fastest rider of all those who have gone through. Rohan Dennis will be
:00:36. > :00:42.next up to that mark to see what he can do. The climbing part of the
:00:43. > :00:43.course will not be his favourite. He is one of the favourites for a
:00:44. > :00:56.medal. Maciej Bodnar again for Poland. We
:00:57. > :01:00.have also had a couple of questions about bottles, while we are waiting
:01:01. > :01:03.for the time of Dennis to come through. Why aren't they using the
:01:04. > :01:09.Olympic issue bottles, which they are obliged to pressure Mark I think
:01:10. > :01:14.the problem with a lot of bottle slipping out has meant they had been
:01:15. > :01:18.allowed to discard them. Dennis is on her time here. I think he is
:01:19. > :01:23.going to be just inside Geraint Thomas' time, but there won't be
:01:24. > :01:26.much in it, three or four seconds. Five seconds is the gap as Rohan
:01:27. > :01:36.Dennis Dennis is the new leader through the ten K mark. This road is
:01:37. > :01:40.completely dry at the top, a real disadvantage for the early starters
:01:41. > :01:48.but on another part of the course, Thomas is getting stuck in. I think
:01:49. > :01:54.the fact that Rohan Dennis's time is only marginally quicker has shown
:01:55. > :01:59.what a good ride Thomas has done so far. He doesn't do just riding
:02:00. > :02:03.around, Thomas, when he races, he goes flat out. It is the chance for
:02:04. > :02:08.an Olympic gold medal. It might not be the best chance but he will grab
:02:09. > :02:15.it with both hands and he is certainly making the best of it. He
:02:16. > :02:22.certainly is. A first look now and the start for Primoz Roglic, from
:02:23. > :02:26.Slovenia. We mention him as a rider who, you never know, might cause
:02:27. > :02:33.some problems for the others, having won that time trial stage in the
:02:34. > :02:41.Giro d'Italia. Fourth quickest, but he is nearly 20 seconds slower than
:02:42. > :02:46.Rohan Dennis. As a rule of thumb, if you are within 15-20 seconds of the
:02:47. > :02:52.first time check, you are in contention for a podium spot. Back
:02:53. > :02:59.with Cancellaro. At the foot of the first climb. Has he got one really
:03:00. > :03:03.big rider left in him? Certainly a nice cadence. So experienced in
:03:04. > :03:09.measuring his efforts. He will be able to see this course blindfolded.
:03:10. > :03:15.A first look at Tony Martin since he left the starting gate, on the
:03:16. > :03:19.cobbled section. A very wide, open, expansive road, no protection from
:03:20. > :03:26.the wind or the elements. The weather is noticeably better than it
:03:27. > :03:33.was earlier this morning. Reasonably big gear there, just staying on top
:03:34. > :03:38.of the fluid intake, despite being just 11 minutes into this race. It
:03:39. > :03:42.is the only place on the course that they are truly exposed to the wind,
:03:43. > :03:48.it is blustering about, cross wind of it, but they are not exposed here
:03:49. > :03:55.in the jungle. Cancellaro will turn right and be faced by a wall almost
:03:56. > :04:00.as he heads up. That first little hit, it doesn't show that it is 20%
:04:01. > :04:07.he has just been over. That is where van Dyck lost concentration. That is
:04:08. > :04:13.an unbelievable check if it is correct, 52 seconds ahead of Konig
:04:14. > :04:18.at this point. We will wait and see until he gets over to the top, but
:04:19. > :04:25.his form certainly looks good, looks well in control, just biding his
:04:26. > :04:30.time. He didn't start very quickly, Leopold Konig, compared to the
:04:31. > :04:37.others, on that first time check, but even so, predictably impressive
:04:38. > :04:40.from Cancellaro. We would expect him not to enjoy this particular part of
:04:41. > :04:48.the course, but he will stay in touch. It is just over four minutes
:04:49. > :04:52.of climbing in total. Cancellaro continues to tap out a nice, steady
:04:53. > :04:56.rhythm here. Again, the road will kick up once more, as he comes up in
:04:57. > :05:08.the general direction of the first time check, which is approaching in
:05:09. > :05:13.the next minute or two. Jonathan Castroviejo has gone through the
:05:14. > :05:18.first time check as well. Taylor Phinney is miles down, three
:05:19. > :05:22.quarters of a minute down at that first one. Taylor Phinney is not
:05:23. > :05:28.having the best of starts to this day. He really targeted this time
:05:29. > :05:31.trial, Taylor Phinney. This is wrong and Dennis from Australia. They were
:05:32. > :05:39.going to have two riders but Richie Porte badly damaged his shoulder in
:05:40. > :05:43.the road race -- this is Rohan Dennis. It is the opportunity for
:05:44. > :05:48.him to take some ground, Cancellaro, when he gets over the top of the
:05:49. > :05:53.climb. He will be close to Dennis. He too will enjoy the flatter land.
:05:54. > :05:58.Let's take a look at this time, Cancellaro is marginally in front of
:05:59. > :06:02.Dennis. Geraint Thomas, from a British point of view, five seconds
:06:03. > :06:07.down on the time of Cancellaro, so very much in the ballpark at this
:06:08. > :06:11.stage. Absolutely. All of the riders, from what I can glimpse of
:06:12. > :06:15.the coverage, are choosing to go with road tyres. Cancellaro using
:06:16. > :06:22.all of the road here, possibly the best descender among the time trial
:06:23. > :06:26.cloud and -- crowd and he won't lose any time on the descents at all.
:06:27. > :06:30.There is the situation at the ten kilometre mark but the top four
:06:31. > :06:35.riders, the last four riders on the road, including Chris Froome, still
:06:36. > :06:39.have to go through that time check. HAZEL IRVINE: Each rider taking one
:06:40. > :06:45.hour and 15, you will not miss too much, but we do have an important
:06:46. > :06:51.moment for 23-year-old Yorkshire man Qais Ashfaq and the bantamweight
:06:52. > :06:57.division. This is live. It is a big favour him, his Olympic debut. His
:06:58. > :07:04.opponent from Thailand, Chatchai Butdee, 30 years old -- it is a big
:07:05. > :07:09.moment for him. A big moment, Richie Woodall and Ron McIntosh, all yours.
:07:10. > :07:17.So we are under way. The 56 kilograms bantamweight division,
:07:18. > :07:23.this is action from the first preliminary round. The boxer in red
:07:24. > :07:29.with the southpaw stance is Great Britain's Qais Ashfaq, ranked Number
:07:30. > :07:31.Ten in the world. Commonwealth Games silver medallist, European
:07:32. > :07:36.Championships silver medallist and his opponent, ranked number seven in
:07:37. > :07:40.the world, in blue, operating out of the southpaw stance, Chatchai
:07:41. > :07:45.Butdee, 31 years of old and competing in his second Olympic
:07:46. > :07:50.Games, finishing in ninth place in London four years ago. Hugely
:07:51. > :07:55.experienced operator. This promises to be a contest of high skill
:07:56. > :08:04.between two very talented boxers. If you watch Chatchai Butdee, he has a
:08:05. > :08:08.very wide stance. Always this one to downstairs, a little bit too far
:08:09. > :08:15.away to go to the head, so if you throw a 1-2 with a left hand and try
:08:16. > :08:23.to head the body, that is when Ashfaq has got to avoid it, he
:08:24. > :08:28.always goes downstairs. The right hand from Butdee as the two boxers
:08:29. > :08:33.came together. It has been a long wait for them to get their Olympic
:08:34. > :08:40.campaign under way. It is the ninth session of boxing, the fifth day of
:08:41. > :08:49.action. And now, finally. What they have qualified for. To proceed to a
:08:50. > :08:52.podium place in the 56 kilograms bantamweight division. Plenty of
:08:53. > :08:57.thought in these offensive forays, each man looking for an opening.
:08:58. > :09:06.Plenty of patients being exhibited by both boxers. Ashfaq working a
:09:07. > :09:11.little more with the jab, he has got to keep his opponent off. He starts
:09:12. > :09:17.his attacks from a little further out, Butdee, so Ashfaq, maybe faint
:09:18. > :09:23.the jab and bring your opponent onto your punches. Bit of a head clash
:09:24. > :09:27.there. Ashfaq has got to be more active with the jab, in and out with
:09:28. > :09:34.the feet and bring the opponent onto the left hand. Both of these men
:09:35. > :09:46.qualified for this Olympic tournament via the continental
:09:47. > :09:54.qualification events. Butdee with the Asia and oh Xian and event,
:09:55. > :10:04.Ashfaq with a silver at the Europeans. Good enough to get him
:10:05. > :10:12.here. The ten second Clapper has sounded.
:10:13. > :10:19.Points have been a pretty precious commodity. Plenty of posturing, but
:10:20. > :10:39.which way will the judges go? It is a fairly close round, isn't it
:10:40. > :10:44.question mark no question. Butdee lands with a nice shot, finishes
:10:45. > :10:48.with the right hand, misses the target. Ashfaq had some success of
:10:49. > :10:53.his own. The last minute was a better last-minute for Qais Ashfaq,
:10:54. > :10:58.more positive with the jab, but he has this in and out style. Let's
:10:59. > :11:00.have a look at the scores. Across the board for Butdee, so Ashfaq has
:11:01. > :11:19.two up the tempo a little bit, Ron. The man standing straight in the
:11:20. > :11:28.union Jack was the super heavyweight Fraser Clark, here supporting the
:11:29. > :11:33.team. Cheering on his team-mate, real band of brothers and sisters at
:11:34. > :11:38.the sporting Institute in Sheffield, but Ashfaq has conceded the opening
:11:39. > :11:43.round, so he needs to respond here. A better start from Ashfaq on the
:11:44. > :11:48.front foot, using the jab. He is throwing it from the waist, it is
:11:49. > :11:51.hard to detect. He has to keep going, be more active, in and out
:11:52. > :11:57.with the feed, like we spoke about. It is the first with the jab, then
:11:58. > :12:09.adjust the feed, first and third boxing. -- adjust the feet.
:12:10. > :12:15.The second wave attack from Butdee with the left hand was effective, it
:12:16. > :12:21.did get through. Up on his toes and peppering him with the right jab,
:12:22. > :12:27.looking to find the range. That jab is just keeping Butdee off-balance.
:12:28. > :12:32.It is a problem for Butdee, when the jab is going out from Ashfaq. He
:12:33. > :12:36.cannot launch his attacks. It is better boxing from Ashfaq but he has
:12:37. > :12:43.to be more accurate, especially with his left hand. But keep the jab
:12:44. > :12:50.going, keep this fellow off-balance. They have won national titles within
:12:51. > :12:53.their respective countries. Ashfaq two-time national champion, four
:12:54. > :12:59.times British champion. Butdee is a two-time national champion of
:13:00. > :13:03.Thailand, titles in 2011 and back in 2008. That was a good left from the
:13:04. > :13:10.man in blue and it causes Ashfaq to go beyond punching distance to allow
:13:11. > :13:15.his head to clear. Remember, he conceded the opening round across
:13:16. > :13:20.the board. That is a cracking shot and down goes Ashfaq. He is saying
:13:21. > :13:24.it was a slip but he walked onto a shot and dipped his knees and was
:13:25. > :13:30.forced to touch down. There was not a lot in the round but that will
:13:31. > :13:33.swing it for Butdee. Ashfaq just a lapse in concentration as his
:13:34. > :13:38.opponent came forward, over the top it went, it was a good punch. Butdee
:13:39. > :13:46.follows up with a good corkscrew right hand. In Olympic style boxing,
:13:47. > :13:49.it is no longer called amateur boxing, putting your man on the
:13:50. > :13:57.floor doesn't necessarily result in a 10-8 round, but it looks as though
:13:58. > :14:00.Ashfaq, unless it is something dramatic, will concede this second
:14:01. > :14:06.round across the board, just as he did the opening round. There is the
:14:07. > :14:10.ten second Clapper. What was previously a close round has been
:14:11. > :14:15.tilted in favour of the man in blue, courtesy of that knocked that he
:14:16. > :14:22.scored, walking Ashfaq onto that shot. It is a colourful crowd from
:14:23. > :14:27.Thailand. But you have got it, Ron, spot on. It was a close round up to
:14:28. > :14:30.that point and that may have swayed it for this man. It is a left hand
:14:31. > :14:38.over the top as Butdee comes forward. Good shot indeed. That is
:14:39. > :14:44.actually a different sequence but that is another one he scored. So
:14:45. > :14:48.Ashfaq, up to that point, to the point he went down... It is a
:14:49. > :14:53.belting short, a cracker, on the button. Down he goes, he has
:14:54. > :15:00.recovered, he is a fit kid but it has probably given the round to
:15:01. > :15:04.Butdee. 10-9 once again across the board in favour of Chatchai Butdee.
:15:05. > :15:06.So Ashfaq is facing an uphill task here in the third and final round.
:15:07. > :15:19.He needs a big one. So the third and final round and the
:15:20. > :15:22.status of the contest, the man wearing blue, the seventh ranked
:15:23. > :15:25.boxer in the world, has taken the opening two rounds unanimously
:15:26. > :15:30.across the board. The second round was close but then he walked Ashfaq
:15:31. > :15:37.onto a cracking southpaw left and forced the man in red to touch down,
:15:38. > :15:43.so Ashfaq is trailing 20-18 from all three judges. He needs a massive
:15:44. > :15:48.round to get back on terms and takers into the realm of count back,
:15:49. > :15:54.or he can end the contest by forcing a stoppage. Those are his options.
:15:55. > :15:57.It is an all or nothing situation now for Ashfaq, he has just got to
:15:58. > :16:02.go for it and take the odd risk going forward. What else can he do?
:16:03. > :16:05.He has got to back his man up and put him under pressure, go through
:16:06. > :16:10.the gears and raise the tempo, otherwise he is going home. Another
:16:11. > :16:15.good southpaw left from Butdee who then used his feet and effectively
:16:16. > :16:24.to pirouette around Ashfaq and Ashfaq boxing at this tempo and type
:16:25. > :16:27.of intensity, it is as though he is looking for a knockout shot because
:16:28. > :16:32.there is not sustained pressure that could bring about a 10-8 round. It
:16:33. > :16:35.looks as though that is where he is putting... That is the type of
:16:36. > :16:41.strategy he will adopt in this round. This type of tempo is suiting
:16:42. > :16:45.the man in blue down to the ground. He can afford to lose the round 10-9
:16:46. > :16:49.and will still go through to the second preliminary round on a
:16:50. > :16:50.unanimous points decision by virtue of having those two rounds of
:16:51. > :17:05.insurance. When Ashfaq is boxing up against
:17:06. > :17:10.unorthodox boxer he is the southpaw. But here you have two southpaws.
:17:11. > :17:15.That awkwardness has gone and it is a level playing field. He is coming
:17:16. > :17:21.off second best, especially with that over the top from Butdee.
:17:22. > :17:26.Ashfaq is dropping his right hand a bit too much and is walking onto the
:17:27. > :17:40.shots. He has got a mountain to climb now. Ashfaq is coached by
:17:41. > :17:48.Martin Bates. He will be cheering him on. He has defined the punch of
:17:49. > :17:55.a lifetime now. Given the status of the scorecard coming into this final
:17:56. > :18:02.round, Ashfaq has to find a knockout punch as the seconds continue to
:18:03. > :18:09.elapse. If he had won the second round, it would all be on the last
:18:10. > :18:14.round. But that single turned it for Butdee and gave it to him. He raised
:18:15. > :18:23.his arm immediately, Chatchai Butdee. His supporters in the stands
:18:24. > :18:26.are elated. The two times champion, Chatchai Butdee, has produced a
:18:27. > :18:33.performance that will progress him through to the second round. Here is
:18:34. > :18:38.that southpaw left. But really that knocked down in the second round was
:18:39. > :18:46.hugely significant. It was indeed, but he got caught with a couple of
:18:47. > :18:52.really good shots from Butdee again. This crowd is loving it, a good
:18:53. > :18:56.performance from the man in blue. Qais Ashfaq needed that second
:18:57. > :19:03.round, that was the round where he had to get all the judges' scores.
:19:04. > :19:10.But the knocks down turned it. Once he was behind in the second round it
:19:11. > :19:16.was a mountain to climb. Let's get the official verdict, the conclusion
:19:17. > :19:23.of the 56 kilograms bantamweight boxing contest.
:19:24. > :19:45.Ladies and gentlemen, the winner on a unanimous decision, Chatchai
:19:46. > :19:51.Butdee. So, confirmation of what was widely anticipated at the conclusion
:19:52. > :19:55.of that third and final round. He goes through to the second round of
:19:56. > :20:00.the bantamweight tournament at the expense of Great Britain's Qais
:20:01. > :20:04.Ashfaq. The reigning European Championship silver medallist and
:20:05. > :20:09.European games bronze medallist will not add Olympic hardware to his
:20:10. > :20:20.collection. He is eliminated in the first round. HAZEL: Not to be for
:20:21. > :20:25.Qais Ashfaq. Knocked down in round two. Who will be the knockout
:20:26. > :20:30.attraction in the men's road race time child? We are going back to
:20:31. > :20:36.Simon Brotherton for the finale of this event.
:20:37. > :20:41.We are watching the big prerace favourite, Tom Dumoulin from the
:20:42. > :20:46.Netherlands. All the big favourites are out on the road and well into
:20:47. > :20:50.their rights. But it is the Australian Rohan Dennis who are
:20:51. > :20:55.setting the pace so far. Geraint Thomas up to this point has ridden
:20:56. > :21:00.better than Chris Froome. In the opening stages it was Rohan Dennis
:21:01. > :21:05.and Fabian Cancellara who set the fastest times. He has lost some
:21:06. > :21:10.ground since then. Tony Martin never really got on terms. It is early
:21:11. > :21:16.days. Chris Froome went through rather disappointingly in seventh
:21:17. > :21:21.place, but he has been slowest at first time checks before in previous
:21:22. > :21:26.races, certainly in the Tour de France. He knows how to pace his
:21:27. > :21:31.right. Rohan Dennis is getting himself out in France and has got a
:21:32. > :21:35.significant buffer at the moment. We are waiting for Tom Dumoulin to come
:21:36. > :21:39.through the second check. The reason they are showing the time of Leopold
:21:40. > :21:45.Konig is because he is the fastest of those who have finished so far.
:21:46. > :21:51.The time trial set them off in two groups of riders and the first half
:21:52. > :21:55.of the field are in. Because it is seeded you have all the overall
:21:56. > :22:00.contenders, the riders who are expected to go for the medals, in
:22:01. > :22:05.the second group, which is what we are watching now. We would like to
:22:06. > :22:09.see the favourites getting measured against each other, but we are
:22:10. > :22:13.getting plenty of time checks so we can tell you exactly what is going
:22:14. > :22:21.on. We are waiting for time checks for Tom Dumoulin. Rohan Dennis is
:22:22. > :22:26.doing a storming ride. If he won here, it would be the ride of his
:22:27. > :22:31.life. This is Castro fiasco from Spain, the second fastest at the
:22:32. > :22:38.moment, having gone through the 19.7 kilometre checkpoint. He was sixth
:22:39. > :22:48.in the first check, so he has pasted well. Vasil Kiryienka is still not
:22:49. > :22:54.through that time checked and is not gaining ground. By my reckoning he
:22:55. > :23:03.is losing time. The world champion continues to lose ground. We are
:23:04. > :23:10.going to switch to images of two riders we are waiting for. Fourth
:23:11. > :23:16.and seventh. Fabian Cancellara overtakes Taylor Phinney. Taylor
:23:17. > :23:20.Phinney is not having the sort of daily was hoping for. He twice
:23:21. > :23:24.finished fourth in London four years ago in London and he was very
:23:25. > :23:31.focused on this event leading into the Olympic Games, but it is not
:23:32. > :23:37.going well for him at all. Vasil Kiryienka is well out of the
:23:38. > :23:42.standings so far. That is with only 19.7 kilometres covered. Not even
:23:43. > :23:54.half distance yet and he has lost over a minute. Tenth place for him
:23:55. > :24:02.at the second check. Rohan Dennis is our leader on the road. In gold
:24:03. > :24:06.medal position at the moment. Can Tom Dumoulin do anything to reduce
:24:07. > :24:14.that deficit. He went through the first check in fourth position. No,
:24:15. > :24:20.he is still in arrears. If anything, he has lost more time. A
:24:21. > :24:25.disappointing ride for him. We do not know whether his wrist is giving
:24:26. > :24:31.him some problems having broken that recently. He did the road race and
:24:32. > :24:35.rode off after five kilometres to save himself for this event. He
:24:36. > :24:41.looks good, but the elegy is not quite what it was in the Tour de
:24:42. > :24:47.France. 17 seconds in arrears. The second fastest time after Rohan
:24:48. > :24:58.Dennis. -- the energy. Chris Froome is the only one we are waiting for a
:24:59. > :25:01.second time checked for. Chris Froome was 19 seconds back at the
:25:02. > :25:06.first check and he needs to make some inroads into that. We are
:25:07. > :25:15.riding with the Dutch man at the moment. Will get some pictures soon
:25:16. > :25:22.enough. He was riding that corner very safely. Do you use all that
:25:23. > :25:27.space available or do you try not to cross the painted lines which can be
:25:28. > :25:31.very slippy? It happened to Chris Froome in the Tour de France. It
:25:32. > :25:38.will be interesting to see how he tackles this one. Chris Froome is 20
:25:39. > :25:44.seconds behind. Here comes Chris Froome. The last man on the road.
:25:45. > :25:51.Has he managed to gain any time on those in front of him? No, he has
:25:52. > :25:57.not, he has lost some more. He is 24 seconds down. If anything he has
:25:58. > :26:03.given the way some more time. It is quite surprising. We have seen him
:26:04. > :26:06.pace ride before where he has been careful at the first check. But I
:26:07. > :26:12.would have thought he would be trying to get some time back now.
:26:13. > :26:19.Looking good for Rohan Dennis. Tackling the Grumari climb. 90 in
:26:20. > :26:29.London four years ago, can he go better this time around? Jonathan
:26:30. > :26:39.Castro V E. Tom Dumoulin is fighting hard. Castro V E is a bit of a
:26:40. > :26:50.surprise, he is a good rider. Chris Froome is only in favour. Geraint
:26:51. > :27:03.Thomas is three or four seconds slower.
:27:04. > :27:13.Primoz Roglic is coming up to the top of the Grumari climb. Leopold
:27:14. > :27:18.Konig is the fastest finisher in the front group and he has already been
:27:19. > :27:26.beaten by Primoz Roglic. This coastal road is completely dry as he
:27:27. > :27:33.tackles it for the second time, Rohan Dennis. It is not too long,
:27:34. > :27:34.but it is certainly tough. Rohan Dennis are looking to maintain that
:27:35. > :27:53.advantage. Castroviejo is three quarters of a
:27:54. > :27:59.minute faster than Primoz Roglic. I imagine he will keep on coming down
:28:00. > :28:05.now. They can ride the top section of the descent where it is dry, but
:28:06. > :28:11.further down you have got patches of wet and the lines tend to hold the
:28:12. > :28:21.moisture. He just skipped the bike across it to get out of that. He
:28:22. > :28:25.wants to use the whole road, but he is reluctant. Nobody wants to touch
:28:26. > :28:31.the line. Everybody has been safe so far. It is well protected at the
:28:32. > :28:36.edges of the road and there are plenty of warnings from the
:28:37. > :28:40.marshals. One minute of racing will bring them back down to the flat,
:28:41. > :28:46.wide roads and seven kilometre stretch. A tight right-hander to
:28:47. > :28:51.come and everybody has stayed up right there. Then he will make a 90
:28:52. > :28:56.degrees turn and then there is a fairly long flat stretch. Seven
:28:57. > :29:03.kilometres of good time trialling to rain. The first chance we have had
:29:04. > :29:09.to ride along with Chris Froome so far. He has got a lot to do if he is
:29:10. > :29:13.to haul himself into contention. Not wishing to put a dampener on it, but
:29:14. > :29:19.in the road race he got himself into a good position. He is listening to
:29:20. > :29:23.the radio and getting time checks and he knows where he is. Radios are
:29:24. > :29:29.allowed in the time trial, but not the road race. In the road race once
:29:30. > :29:37.he got onto the final climb he was not making inroads to get in touch
:29:38. > :29:42.with the best. It is a long race and nobody paces themselves better than
:29:43. > :29:48.Chris Froome. It is not half way yet. He will not be panicking, but I
:29:49. > :29:53.would expect him to make some headway into reducing the deficit
:29:54. > :30:00.between him and Rohan Dennis. Rohan Dennis is the man to beat at the
:30:01. > :30:06.moment out on the road. Castroviejo has the fastest time at the moment
:30:07. > :30:11.at the next check, 34.6 kilometres. He has been getting better and
:30:12. > :30:16.better as this race has progressed. Tom Dumoulin got himself back into a
:30:17. > :30:22.medal position. Beautiful position on the bike. You cannot see his
:30:23. > :30:29.head. Excellent time trialling form. An excellent low gear he is pushing.
:30:30. > :30:33.He will like this area, but he is not afraid of the clowns either.
:30:34. > :30:41.Staying in contention at the front, Tom Dumoulin, very much in range.
:30:42. > :30:46.Geraint Thomas at 34.6 kilometres is just over a minute slower than
:30:47. > :30:48.Castroviejo. A strong start by Thomas, but he has been steadily
:30:49. > :31:01.losing ground since. If I think he is unlikely to be on
:31:02. > :31:04.the podium today. I work them -- a workmanlike performance from him.
:31:05. > :31:08.Very difficult to get thrown into an event like this, even though he was
:31:09. > :31:15.the reserve and had his equipment here, he never expected to get the
:31:16. > :31:19.ride. Maciej Bodnar is a better get some company, Julian Alaphilippe. We
:31:20. > :31:25.haven't seen much of the young Frenchman, have we, from the second
:31:26. > :31:31.group of riders? Julian Alaphilippe is way down the standings, nearly
:31:32. > :31:40.three and a half minutes slower than Castroviejo, even at 20 kilometres.
:31:41. > :31:44.So forth in the road race -- fourth position in the road race and this
:31:45. > :31:49.time trial will not see him in contention. Chris Froome once more.
:31:50. > :31:57.There will be no hiding at a business check, 36.4 kilometres, we
:31:58. > :32:00.will see who is heading to the podium and who is challenging. If
:32:01. > :32:04.you haven't started to make up ground by then, I would say it is
:32:05. > :32:08.highly unlikely you will do so with just 20 kilometres remaining, so
:32:09. > :32:12.this next check is absolutely critical to define who is going to
:32:13. > :32:15.be fighting for the Olympic title. Can Chris Froome find a little bit
:32:16. > :32:19.more in those long legs of his to power himself along this road and
:32:20. > :32:24.make the most of this section of the course, to try and drag himself back
:32:25. > :32:30.into contention for the medals here in the men's Olympic time trial?
:32:31. > :32:35.Favours the asymmetric chainring is that speed the rider's leg over the
:32:36. > :32:39.centre to get them back to the power stroke. Some differing opinions
:32:40. > :32:44.science wise over whether they work but it suits him. Dennis, even
:32:45. > :32:48.climbing in the tuck position, trying to seek out every possible
:32:49. > :32:53.advantage. Looks smooth still, working hard, but he is eating up
:32:54. > :32:57.the kilometres. He hits the climb for the final time now. He knows
:32:58. > :33:02.once he gets over this, most of the terrain is the type he likes. This
:33:03. > :33:06.is great stuff from Rohan Dennis so far and the next time check will
:33:07. > :33:10.confirm that he is measuring his effort well and hasn't gone out to
:33:11. > :33:15.hard too soon here on the time trial course, because it is a long time
:33:16. > :33:19.trial. It is about three and a half minutes climbing on this part of the
:33:20. > :33:24.course and he will be the next through our time check, followed by
:33:25. > :33:36.Tom Duma lan. So it is all coming thick and fast dash Tom -- Tom
:33:37. > :33:43.Dumoulin. 24% on this climb, the steepest by far. Over three minutes
:33:44. > :33:48.to climate because of the severity. You can tell the effect as it starts
:33:49. > :33:51.to kick in just by the speed he is travelling at. Not panicking,
:33:52. > :33:56.keeping the gears down, finding a good rhythm. It is like an obstacle
:33:57. > :34:00.to get over before you can get on with the race. It is about
:34:01. > :34:05.conserving, rather than trying to gain time for him on this part of
:34:06. > :34:10.the course. And it really is starting to tell now. He knows he
:34:11. > :34:15.can go into the red, there is a minute's percent to recover over the
:34:16. > :34:20.top. It is tiring just watching, isn't it? The good news for them, as
:34:21. > :34:24.Chris was saying, is it doesn't last for too long. They can soon leave it
:34:25. > :34:33.behind them and continue with the rest of the course. As he makes a
:34:34. > :34:37.left-hand turn, he has just got a little bit more to go, heading up
:34:38. > :34:44.towards the top now, as the road veers towards the right, coming up
:34:45. > :34:52.shortly. The climb almost done. Here he is, coming up towards the time
:34:53. > :35:00.check. That will leave you gasping, a climate like that. Short and
:35:01. > :35:09.sharp. And 21 points 79 seconds faster than the Spanish rider
:35:10. > :35:14.Castroviejo. -- 21. 79. So almost an identical gap between the two. Has
:35:15. > :35:19.he got enough of a buffer as he starts to fade in the latter portion
:35:20. > :35:22.of this race? I don't know. The Spanish rider seems to be getting
:35:23. > :35:31.better and better as they have ridden through here. What can he do
:35:32. > :35:35.over this closing section. Thankfully, the road is drying out a
:35:36. > :35:41.little bit but it is less than a minute of riding down here. A little
:35:42. > :35:45.bit sketchy around that corner, he doesn't have to take any chances. It
:35:46. > :35:50.isn't worth it, get himself safely down to that bottom road. One more
:35:51. > :35:56.corner to go until he is able to see it and then he can get back to time
:35:57. > :35:58.trialling on the roads he prefers. At the moment, Geraint Thomas is
:35:59. > :36:05.fourth fastest through that time check and is nearly a minute slower
:36:06. > :36:08.than Rohan Dennis. But we still have seven riders to come through it.
:36:09. > :36:13.Here is Fabian Cancellara once more, who started like a greyhound that
:36:14. > :36:19.had been let out of the traps. He is still on terms, as is Chris Froome.
:36:20. > :36:28.20 seconds in arrears at the last time check, so in touch. It depends
:36:29. > :36:33.on Dennis, will he fade towards the end? These are professional riders
:36:34. > :36:35.and know how to pace themselves over difficult terrain like this, none
:36:36. > :36:43.more so than Cancellaro and Chris Froome. Dumoulin was in the silver
:36:44. > :36:47.medal position at the 19 K check, he will be the next one to come through
:36:48. > :36:50.but I certainly still wouldn't rule out Cancellaro in fourth position
:36:51. > :36:58.and certainly not Chris Froome, who went through in fifth, just eating
:36:59. > :37:01.his way up this climb now. Nothing in it between Cancellaro and Chris
:37:02. > :37:06.Froome in fourth and fifth. Castroviejo of Spain, who looked
:37:07. > :37:14.great in the road race as well, in the work that he did at the front
:37:15. > :37:19.for Rodriguez and Val Verdy at a vital stage of the race. Powering
:37:20. > :37:24.his way up the lower slopes of the climb, it falls flat where the tents
:37:25. > :37:29.are, that was the feed station in the road race, and then it kicks up
:37:30. > :37:35.again, a minute or so's riding and that will be the last obstacle of
:37:36. > :37:40.the day for him. Here is Chris Froome, starting his second a lap of
:37:41. > :37:45.the circuit. He is out making his way around the outside of the head
:37:46. > :37:52.lamp. Can he start to make any inroads on those ahead of him --
:37:53. > :37:57.Headland? He is working hard, you can see in the body language. Unlike
:37:58. > :38:00.Dennis, who stayed as far as possible in the tuck position, even
:38:01. > :38:05.on the climbs, because there is a strong crosswind off the Atlantic,
:38:06. > :38:08.Chris Froome is out of the saddle, choosing a position that lets him
:38:09. > :38:16.get the most power out, rather than stay aerodynamic. Still a fair bit
:38:17. > :38:22.of racing ahead of him here, over half an hour on the road for him. On
:38:23. > :38:31.the climb now, Cancellaro, for the last time. Phenomenal record he has
:38:32. > :38:38.got. Three times the winner of the Tour of Flanders, three times winner
:38:39. > :38:41.of Paris-Roubaix, stage winner at the Tour de France, of 14 days in
:38:42. > :38:50.the yellow jersey and four times the world champion in this event.
:38:51. > :38:55.Geraint Thomas through the 44 check in one hour and 53 minutes, so he
:38:56. > :39:03.will be the mark to beat -- in one hour and 53. Dumoulin, Cancellaro,
:39:04. > :39:11.and if room, they are the three that we are waiting for. Here comes
:39:12. > :39:18.Fabian Cancellara and he has gone quicker than Ronan Bopanna is and it
:39:19. > :39:25.seems that Cancellaro has back loaded his efforts somewhat. What a
:39:26. > :39:30.turnaround, 24 seconds in arrears. We said, did Dennis get the lead by
:39:31. > :39:33.pushing on early? What a comeback, that his experience for you, placing
:39:34. > :39:38.your ride and knowing you lose an awful lot on the climb if you
:39:39. > :39:41.haven't got any more to give on the final lap. You can hear the cheers
:39:42. > :39:46.down the street from where we are sitting from those among the crowd
:39:47. > :39:50.supporting Fabian Cancellara. A very, very popular rider, in the
:39:51. > :39:58.autumn of his career, and is this the one last big, big win before he
:39:59. > :40:03.waves the sport goodbye? Using the dry roads to full effect. One of the
:40:04. > :40:08.best time trialling descenders on the planet, shaking his legs, the
:40:09. > :40:12.fatigue is starting to tell, but he will know the checks given to him,
:40:13. > :40:19.he is inside of another Olympic title. Wouldn't that be something?
:40:20. > :40:22.But Dumoulin is a rider who could potentially have something to say
:40:23. > :40:26.about that, one of the big favourites coming into this, an
:40:27. > :40:31.injury problem ahead of the race which may have affected his chances
:40:32. > :40:35.but he has ridden well so far. Can he keep the effort going and indeed
:40:36. > :40:39.increase the intensity of his ride the longer it goes on? He has
:40:40. > :40:46.certainly kept the deficit within range so far on those ahead of him?
:40:47. > :40:49.We watch Chris Froome on the road for the last time alongside the
:40:50. > :40:52.cobbles and you wonder, have these riders shown experience question
:40:53. > :40:57.mark they have been down at the first checks because they have been
:40:58. > :41:01.pacing their ride and we know it takes its toll later on. 24 seconds
:41:02. > :41:06.was the turnaround for Cancellaro, can Chris Froome and Dumoulin do the
:41:07. > :41:09.same? We will find out in the next three or four minutes, as Chris
:41:10. > :41:14.Froome heads towards that time check to see if he too can gain some
:41:15. > :41:18.ground. He and Cancellaro at the last time check were level pegging.
:41:19. > :41:23.We hope that is still the case as they come towards the final climb of
:41:24. > :41:28.Grumari. The motorbike is helping him define the line, about 70 metres
:41:29. > :41:37.ahead of him. He will know the course well. The last time along the
:41:38. > :41:45.Atlantic coast for him before they head for the finish. What a
:41:46. > :41:52.turnaround by Cancellaro. Quite extraordinary, Cancellaro is nearly
:41:53. > :42:01.18 seconds ahead of Rohan Dennis. Castroviejo is third place at the
:42:02. > :42:04.moment, 39 points -- 39. Seven seconds behind. And a problem for
:42:05. > :42:11.Rohan Dennis and a change of bikes for the Australian. It was already
:42:12. > :42:15.looking difficult for him to retain his hopes of a gold medal and I
:42:16. > :42:20.would say that puts paid to them. Tragic for him, I am not sure what
:42:21. > :42:26.the problem was, but absolutely desperate time to have a mechanical
:42:27. > :42:31.problem. It is a great change, it has to be said, the mechanic getting
:42:32. > :42:36.the bike off the roof before the car has even stopped, but even so, 15
:42:37. > :42:43.seconds lost I would say, for Dennis. What a shame for him, one of
:42:44. > :42:49.the main contenders, an animator in the first half of this race. Less
:42:50. > :42:53.than 20 minutes of racing to go. Tony Martin, the former world
:42:54. > :42:57.champion, has just gone through and he is over two minutes down on the
:42:58. > :43:03.fastest time, so he is not in contention. No, he is out of this
:43:04. > :43:09.race this year. Castroviejo is going to be the rider to beat. Over one
:43:10. > :43:15.minute faster than Geraint Thomas, so he has said the new mark. What
:43:16. > :43:22.can Dennis do? Can he get himself a spot on the podium? He was already
:43:23. > :43:25.starting to wane by the look of it. Dumoulin has caught Kiryienka, the
:43:26. > :43:30.world champion, by the looks of things. Kiryienka has found it very
:43:31. > :43:36.hard going here in Rio, and Dumoulin continues to press on and I wonder
:43:37. > :43:41.how he has measured his effort. We will get some indication as he heads
:43:42. > :43:46.up the Grumari climb. He has a lot of fighting to do, quite a deficit,
:43:47. > :43:56.but so did Fabian Cancellara and he turned that around dramatically to
:43:57. > :44:06.put himself in pole position at 36 point -- 36. Four. He has lost time,
:44:07. > :44:12.he will be fighting for a spot on the podium. He is down on Ronan is
:44:13. > :44:15.second in the time check, and Dumoulin is losing ground. Chris
:44:16. > :44:20.Froome is the last rider to come through that time check, we hope to
:44:21. > :44:28.see him shortly, as Dumoulin makes the descent off the Grumari climb,
:44:29. > :44:32.the tight and twisty dissent. So in third position, you can see the
:44:33. > :44:40.difference between he and Cancellaro. A broken handlebar seems
:44:41. > :44:44.to be the problem... Excuse me, that was part of the bike rack. It looked
:44:45. > :44:49.like his triathlon bar was hanging down but it was the brace on the
:44:50. > :44:52.bike rack. We wait to see what problem he has but he communicated
:44:53. > :45:00.it well on the radio and it was a fast change. No, it is a broken bar.
:45:01. > :45:04.You can see if he's being held in place by himself, his left hand
:45:05. > :45:08.effectively in free air. He is stopping it because there is a cable
:45:09. > :45:14.attaching that bar to the bike so if it dropped, it could potentially go
:45:15. > :45:17.in his front wheel. It was as good a change as it could possibly have
:45:18. > :45:23.been. Chris Froome going up the climb for the last time, driving up
:45:24. > :45:32.here. Work to do. And he is losing time. It is not to be. It wasn't a
:45:33. > :45:37.pacing strategy, it was just form. The indicators we saw at the road
:45:38. > :45:41.race seemed to be accurate. It is a longer time to hold form, three
:45:42. > :45:46.weeks of a Tour de France, another three weeks before you get here, it
:45:47. > :45:48.was a lot to ask. 32 seconds in arrears. Fourth place at the moment
:45:49. > :45:59.as it stands. Yes, it will be difficult for him to
:46:00. > :46:04.get back on times. Thomas is out in front of him. Chris Froome is seven
:46:05. > :46:10.seconds off the medals at the moment. It is still possible for
:46:11. > :46:16.him. Rohan Dennis might be able to get himself back the podium. Write
:46:17. > :46:25.to the edge of the road for Chris Froome. He is taking every chance he
:46:26. > :46:30.can to reduce the deficit. A medal is a possibility here. There is a
:46:31. > :46:40.seven second gap between Dumoulin and Chris Froome. I don't know how
:46:41. > :46:46.he does it, he manages to make it look effortless as he gets back down
:46:47. > :46:53.to the flat road. Tuck in position and see what he can do. It is a case
:46:54. > :46:58.of how much he has got left back in the tank. We are back with Fabian
:46:59. > :47:04.Cancellara. What a ride this is from Cancellara. He has been masterful at
:47:05. > :47:09.this discipline for many years, perhaps not quite so much in the
:47:10. > :47:15.last two or three. He was the Olympic champion eight years ago. Is
:47:16. > :47:22.he going to do it once more? He would be a popular winner in the
:47:23. > :47:25.cycling world. He had 17 seconds over Rohan Dennis, but that was
:47:26. > :47:31.before Rohan Dennis had problems, mechanical problems. In a ten
:47:32. > :47:37.kilometres section of course he turned around 24 seconds, over half
:47:38. > :47:45.a minute difference. Unless the shot we were given of the bike change was
:47:46. > :47:50.not live. Cancellara getting into the lead, that could be the case,
:47:51. > :47:56.that could explain things. It was an incredible piece of writing by
:47:57. > :48:04.Cancellara. Here comes Castroviejo, who is closing in very quickly on
:48:05. > :48:07.Primoz Roglic, the Slovenian rider. It is a blistering ride from
:48:08. > :48:17.Castroviejo, he has done extremely well. Got himself into the current
:48:18. > :48:23.best time of 44 kilometres. Remind me of how Geraint Thomas is faring
:48:24. > :48:26.at the moment. Were they all went through he was eighth at the
:48:27. > :48:34.previous check having had all the main riders through there. He is
:48:35. > :48:40.third at the moment at the 44 kilometre check. A top ten finish
:48:41. > :48:47.would be good for Geraint Thomas today. And here we go with Geraint
:48:48. > :48:50.Thomas, the final moments of his ride as he comes back into Pontal
:48:51. > :48:56.and head into the finishing straight. Into sight and up towards
:48:57. > :49:00.the line, a last-minute addition to the start list. As gutsy as ever, we
:49:01. > :49:08.would expect nothing less from Geraint Thomas as he crosses the
:49:09. > :49:14.line. He is the new leader in the clubhouse with all the big favourite
:49:15. > :49:22.still to come. But he has given his all and has produced a very solid
:49:23. > :49:29.ride indeed. You could see it was a painful hour and a bit in the saddle
:49:30. > :49:34.for him. Hugo Hoole, the Canadian rider, who Thomas Geraint caught
:49:35. > :49:47.earlier will stop he comes up towards the lying. He looks
:49:48. > :49:50.absolutely drained as well. Geraint Thomas will be sitting in the hot
:49:51. > :49:57.seat for a little while until some others come in and that time. At the
:49:58. > :50:01.moment it does not look as if Chris Froome will be the man sitting in
:50:02. > :50:06.the seat at the end of the day unless something spectacular
:50:07. > :50:10.happens. Fabian Cancellara is the leader out on the road. I wonder if
:50:11. > :50:16.something happened with Cancellara because he was good at the first
:50:17. > :50:21.checks and maybe there was an issue on the course that we have not seen
:50:22. > :50:26.with him. A little bit of inconsistency with the images we
:50:27. > :50:34.have seen. This is the run in towards the finish, only a minute or
:50:35. > :50:38.two away. Primoz Roglic from Slovenia a stage winner in the Giro
:50:39. > :50:45.d'Italia. Fourth in the World Championship last autumn. Producing
:50:46. > :50:51.a very fine right here today. Having gone through the 44 kilometre check
:50:52. > :50:58.Rohan Dennis got himself back ahead at that point from Castroviejo by
:50:59. > :51:04.just 2.7 seconds. So back into a medal position for Rohan Dennis. Of
:51:05. > :51:11.those who have finished, Geraint Thomas is the quickest up until now.
:51:12. > :51:15.Some great catches for Castroviejo on the way in. A little bit of
:51:16. > :51:24.slipstreaming in the closing stages when they are starting to fade. Yes
:51:25. > :51:30.he managed to catch Julian Allen Phillipe out on the course. Choosing
:51:31. > :51:38.to go to the smoother centre bit of the road, staying out of the
:51:39. > :51:46.puddles. What there is of the wind is cross tail at this point.
:51:47. > :51:51.Castroviejo gritting his teeth for the final 150 metres of this time
:51:52. > :51:59.trial. Primoz Roglic is left trailing in his wake. Castroviejo on
:52:00. > :52:07.absolutely top form and a final spurt towards the line. The new
:52:08. > :52:13.fastest. Geraint Thomas is now down in the silver medal position with
:52:14. > :52:22.assorted favourites still to come. Very good by Primoz Roglic, but only
:52:23. > :52:26.good enough for third place so far. Watching the replay is we are
:52:27. > :52:33.waiting for checks for the favourites out on the course. Bodnar
:52:34. > :52:42.has gone through the 44 kilometre check in third at the moment. And
:52:43. > :52:48.can she Lara is absolutely flying. -- Cancellara. He has been
:52:49. > :52:53.absolutely flying and consistently so throughout the race. He looked
:52:54. > :52:58.strong in the road race at the start of the week. Looking good for his
:52:59. > :53:03.final Olympic tilt. This is a masterful ride so far from
:53:04. > :53:08.Cancellara, brilliant stuff. He has got everything he needs, a master
:53:09. > :53:12.descender, good on the flat roads, and as he showed in the road race he
:53:13. > :53:18.can do the short climbs with some of the best in the world. He will go
:53:19. > :53:25.down here faster than some of the best. You can see he is crossing all
:53:26. > :53:31.of the lines, but he is doing it very smoothly and not touching the
:53:32. > :53:37.breaks in the bends. He makes it look effortless. All that experience
:53:38. > :53:42.coming into play in this vital moment on the biggest stage of all
:53:43. > :53:51.is Cancellara goes for a second Olympic road time trial title. Doing
:53:52. > :53:56.70 kilometres an hour. A masterful display of descending. No one will
:53:57. > :54:01.get close to him. It sounds very reassuring the way you put it like
:54:02. > :54:07.that, Chris. We would not want to see any of the riders come down. We
:54:08. > :54:17.saw it in the men's race and the mistake in the women's. Castroviejo,
:54:18. > :54:22.55 seconds out now. We are watching a time trialling masterclass. We
:54:23. > :54:27.will find out what happened on the course in the postrace interviews.
:54:28. > :54:33.What a ride by him. Dumoulin is fighting for a medal. At the last
:54:34. > :54:38.time it looked as if Dumoulin and Chris Froome would be fighting for a
:54:39. > :54:43.bronze medal potentially, if my memory serves me right. He has got a
:54:44. > :54:49.couple of minutes to go before he gets to the 44 kilometre check.
:54:50. > :54:53.Settles nicely in position. He has been thinking about this one all
:54:54. > :55:00.year. A fantastic time trial in the Tour de France. He won that
:55:01. > :55:05.convincingly from this man, Chris Froome, who has also settles nicely
:55:06. > :55:09.in position. Not having such a good day out. But we asked an awful lot
:55:10. > :55:15.of these athletes. To win the Tour de France and three reeks of stress
:55:16. > :55:20.and riding to the limit and to come and do it again a couple of weeks
:55:21. > :55:25.later for the Olympics. There are only four men on the roll of honour
:55:26. > :55:31.who have won the race more times than Chris Froome now. That is how
:55:32. > :55:38.good he is. He is a Tour de France is great and rightly so. My third
:55:39. > :55:43.Bodnar has had a strong second-half. The second of the Polish riders in
:55:44. > :55:50.the field today and it is a very good time. That is good enough for
:55:51. > :55:55.second place at the moment and Geraint Thomas will just swap chairs
:55:56. > :56:05.in that little tent and he is slowly edging towards the door. He is in
:56:06. > :56:11.the bronze medal position. The ride of the day for sure goes to
:56:12. > :56:15.Cancellara at the moment. At the last to check Rohan Dennis was
:56:16. > :56:21.nearly three seconds adrift, so bold out of the question for him, but a
:56:22. > :56:27.medal very much on the cards. Disappointing day for Tony Martin,
:56:28. > :56:33.the former world champion. He would have liked to have performed well
:56:34. > :56:37.here. It is a pretty good chorus for him, but his form is not there. He
:56:38. > :56:42.was not in the Tour de France by his own very high standards. Finished
:56:43. > :56:47.with a silver medal four years ago behind Bradley Wiggins. He will
:56:48. > :56:56.finish well outside the medals this time around.
:56:57. > :57:08.Dumoulin. Just starting to rock and roll a bit now. He has got less than
:57:09. > :57:12.15 minutes to go. Just over ten minutes to go for him in this event
:57:13. > :57:25.and he knows he has to get it all out on this final drag. The fourth
:57:26. > :57:30.climb of this 54.5 kilometre long individual time trial. The thing
:57:31. > :57:34.about time trials is there is nowhere to hide. If your form is not
:57:35. > :57:40.quite there, you cannot hide behind the wheels for a while. If it is not
:57:41. > :57:45.going well, it can be pretty demoralising at times if you get the
:57:46. > :57:49.time check. A lot of riders prefer no information at all. There is
:57:50. > :57:56.Geraint Thomas sitting in the bronze chair at the moment. We are hearing
:57:57. > :58:04.Dumoulin is second on the road at the moment. 32 seconds in arrears.
:58:05. > :58:11.Bodnar almost taking a tumble. This is Chris Froome on the last climb,
:58:12. > :58:17.Grota Funda. Can he get himself into a medal position? It will be
:58:18. > :58:22.difficult for him. It looks like Cancellara, Dumoulin and Rohan
:58:23. > :58:29.Dennis who are heading for the podium spots. Has Chris Froome got a
:58:30. > :58:35.big finish in here? He will need one to get onto the podium. He will have
:58:36. > :58:42.to dig extremely deeply for the last ten, 11 minutes of the ride. This is
:58:43. > :58:50.the man to beat. Sorry, this is Nelson Oliveira. We have not seen
:58:51. > :59:00.him all the way around. Very respectable. A good effort from him.
:59:01. > :59:06.No surprise. Geraint Thomas has been nudged off the podium into fourth
:59:07. > :59:13.place. Jan Barta comes over the line, from the Czech Republic. Down
:59:14. > :59:21.in the standings today. The last of the favourites to go through the 44
:59:22. > :59:25.kilometre check. Third place, he is ahead of Rohan Dennis by about ten
:59:26. > :59:32.seconds. It will be interesting this final. Here comes Rohan Dennis, the
:59:33. > :59:36.Australian, who led during the early part of the race. He had that
:59:37. > :59:42.problem, the tribe are broke, the quick bike change. Did he time this
:59:43. > :59:47.to perfection or did he go out too quickly in the first part of the
:59:48. > :59:52.track? He had a problem which cost him about 15 seconds, which is why
:59:53. > :59:58.he has got the deficit to Chris Froome. Ten seconds, it will be old
:59:59. > :00:02.to play for for that bronze medal position, so it will be close for
:00:03. > :00:10.Chris Froome if he wants to get on the podium. Julian Alaphilippe
:00:11. > :00:15.coming up at a more leisurely pace than some of the other riders. He
:00:16. > :00:22.finished fourth in the road race the other day. But he has got round. It
:00:23. > :00:27.would be a fantastic race for Chris Froome if he could fight his way
:00:28. > :00:32.back onto the podium. Cancellara and Dumoulin, it will be difficult to
:00:33. > :00:56.close that gap. He is Fabian Cancellara, finishing
:00:57. > :00:59.his ride in style. Yes, with not too long to go now, just a couple of
:01:00. > :01:03.minutes in the saddle. An exposed run along the seafront. He will cut
:01:04. > :01:06.Inland slightly. Before bursting through into the finishing straight
:01:07. > :01:12.and the waiting crowds. A fantastic ride from Fabian Cancellara from
:01:13. > :01:20.start to finish. Will it take him all the way to the gold-medal? 1:13
:01:21. > :01:26..21 the time to beat. He has shown he can do that. The fast, damp
:01:27. > :01:31.descent, he would have made more than that than any other writer,
:01:32. > :01:36.gained more time on the favourite. He has an advantage of half a minute
:01:37. > :01:49.on his nearest rivals. A bit of time to play with. The other Spanish
:01:50. > :01:58.rider coming in. He was very impressive in the Tour de France,
:01:59. > :02:01.Jon Izaguirre Insausti. His time is good enough for fifth place at the
:02:02. > :02:15.moment, just ahead of Geraint Thomas. Fabian Cancellara, 32
:02:16. > :02:26.seconds ahead of Jon Izaguirre Insausti -- Tom Dumoulin. It is his
:02:27. > :02:32.to lose. He has taken a small radio. He will be getting the checks. He
:02:33. > :02:38.knows it is down to him. Here we go, Fabian Cancellara knows the finish
:02:39. > :02:41.line is almost in sight. Is he about to become the Olympic champion once
:02:42. > :02:45.again? There are others on the road behind him, that they have a lot of
:02:46. > :02:50.ground to make up. A masterclass from one of the greats of the sport,
:02:51. > :02:53.the four-time world champion has produced a ride which means he could
:02:54. > :02:58.become the Olympic champion for the second time in his career. It was a
:02:59. > :03:07.fantastic time trial masterclass from Fabian Cancellara.
:03:08. > :03:13.It catapults into the top the leaderboard. We said at the start
:03:14. > :03:17.the form was not there in the Tour de France. He showed glimmers of
:03:18. > :03:22.form in the road race as he rode with the best time trialists, but
:03:23. > :03:28.you never write somebody off with a career record like his. What a way
:03:29. > :03:34.to ride your last Olympic Games. He has the best chance of taking that
:03:35. > :03:43.title. Tom Dumoulin out on the route at the moment. Three or four minutes
:03:44. > :03:52.left in his ride. He has about four kilometres to go. 32 seconds in
:03:53. > :03:55.arrears at the previous check. One of only a couple of riders who could
:03:56. > :04:01.possibly take the title from ten macro. It is a lot for them to do,
:04:02. > :04:11.with ten kilometres remaining, well, probably four or five now. Tom
:04:12. > :04:21.Dumoulin races rapidly towards the finish line. All the major obstacles
:04:22. > :04:30.are behind him. It is a beautiful position he has got. Ideal cadence.
:04:31. > :04:33.The cadence has dropped a bit towards the end, as you would
:04:34. > :04:37.expect, and the same for Chris Froome, although both still look
:04:38. > :04:41.fluid. Chris Froome looks as good as I have seen him on a bike, what I
:04:42. > :04:53.think the edge has gone from his form. He is fighting for a spot on
:04:54. > :04:59.the podium. Can he get a medal? With a staring finale? Tom Dumoulin just
:05:00. > :05:06.ahead of him. Tony Martin is still on the road as well. And the world
:05:07. > :05:11.champion, although he is not a factor today, nor is Tony Martin.
:05:12. > :05:14.Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome in the shake-up. Fabian Cancellara in the
:05:15. > :05:29.gold-medal position. Nicolas Castroviejo in silver medal
:05:30. > :05:41.position. Chris Froome riding strongly and smoothly. No mean
:05:42. > :05:48.December. Fabian Cancellara in a class of his own. It was a stunning
:05:49. > :05:54.ride by ten macro. -- Fabian Cancellara. Tom Dumoulin heading
:05:55. > :06:02.back and the finish line is moments away. People see what colour medal
:06:03. > :06:09.he will get, if any. A lot can happen in ten kilometres. Fabian
:06:10. > :06:14.Cancellara is going to become the Olympic champion. Looking at all the
:06:15. > :06:20.others, there is no way any of them will go faster than him. A very
:06:21. > :06:24.disappointed American comes in towards the finish, he was fourth in
:06:25. > :06:26.London four years ago, he focused on this so much, but he did not have
:06:27. > :06:45.the legs. It looks almost impossible for
:06:46. > :06:49.Fabian Cancellara to be beaten now. They are riding for the medals
:06:50. > :06:54.behind. They could change order in the last economic tours. I don't
:06:55. > :06:58.think he will be shifting from that chair until he goes to the podium.
:06:59. > :07:05.He looks exhausted, and so he should. He left it all out on the
:07:06. > :07:10.road. What a way to finish your career. Absolutely, that is a last
:07:11. > :07:18.hurrah and three quarters. Tom Dumoulin still racing in towards the
:07:19. > :07:21.finish. He is hoping he can do enough to make sure that he is on
:07:22. > :07:28.the podium at the medal presentation. Look at the pain
:07:29. > :07:35.etched on the face of Tony Martin, the three-time world champion, this
:07:36. > :07:39.was not his day-to-day, though. He has given his best. On this
:07:40. > :07:47.particular occasion, it was nowhere near enough.
:07:48. > :07:55.What a great rivalry he has had against Fabian Cancellara. It is an
:07:56. > :07:59.unaccustomed finishing place for him, he is nearly fighting for the
:08:00. > :08:04.medals. Tom Dumoulin coming towards the finish, he was not far behind
:08:05. > :08:08.Tony Martin. He had high hopes of the gold-medal. They were nearly
:08:09. > :08:12.washed away when he crashed out of the Tour de France. He has made it
:08:13. > :08:19.to the finish, and into the silver medal position. Fabian Cancellara in
:08:20. > :08:25.the gold-medal position, Tom Dumoulin silver, Nicolas Castroviejo
:08:26. > :08:29.bronze. All that remains is for Chris Froome to cross the line and
:08:30. > :08:36.to see whether he can produce a ride in the final minutes that will
:08:37. > :08:44.propel him onto the podium. Chris Froome also into the finishing
:08:45. > :08:47.final. Just over a minute left. He is fighting for a spot on the
:08:48. > :08:55.podium. It looks like it will be the third place. Tom Dumoulin begins his
:08:56. > :09:01.recovery. Chris Froome begins what will feel like a sprint for the line
:09:02. > :09:08.at the end of a long time trial. Nearly 55 kilometres. At the moment,
:09:09. > :09:14.he looks as if he might be able to snatch the bronze medal from Nicolas
:09:15. > :09:22.Castroviejo. If he can stay that far ahead, he may just pipped the
:09:23. > :09:28.Spaniard. It was not the Belarussian's day, he was never in
:09:29. > :09:35.contention. We are looking back down the road for Chris Froome. He is not
:09:36. > :09:39.far behind. The camera needs to be on Chris Froome very shortly,
:09:40. > :09:45.because he is a major player at the end of this race. He will come
:09:46. > :09:49.around the corner any minute now. He should be coming into the finishing
:09:50. > :09:53.straight now. It is Chris Froome coming up towards the line. Is the
:09:54. > :09:59.effort good enough for the bronze medal? It is bronze for Chris
:10:00. > :10:04.Froome. He has managed to get a medal in the Olympic Games. It is
:10:05. > :10:08.bronze, just as it was four years ago at Hampton Court in London. He
:10:09. > :10:14.was outside the medals most of the way round. But he pulled it out at
:10:15. > :10:19.the end, he really dug deep, you can see him sprinting for the line. The
:10:20. > :10:24.winner of the Tour de France hung on to enough of his form to make sure
:10:25. > :10:28.that he could get an Olympic medal. The reality of being Olympic
:10:29. > :10:34.champion and Olympic defeat sinking in now for Fabian Cancellara and Tom
:10:35. > :10:39.Dumoulin. Fabian Cancellara has had such an illustrious and storage
:10:40. > :10:44.career, but this tops the lot. Right at the end of this career, Olympic
:10:45. > :10:48.champion again, as he was eight years ago. A shake of the head from
:10:49. > :10:59.Chris Froome, he did not have it on the day. It is hard to hang on to
:11:00. > :11:04.the blistering form he showed, and today Chris Froome was never
:11:05. > :11:11.threatening to become an input champion, despite his best effort.
:11:12. > :11:20.People a bronze medal out of the bag. We have seen a must for ride
:11:21. > :11:25.from Fabian Cancellara, many people will be pleased about that. He
:11:26. > :11:32.celebrates the moment of victory, when it was confirmed. As he
:11:33. > :11:38.celebrates, this appointment at the end, despite a good ride for the
:11:39. > :11:42.Australian, chatting with Jill Douglas.
:11:43. > :11:52.You set off like a rocket. One or two problems on the way. I pulled a
:11:53. > :12:01.bit too hard. A couple of the roads were a bit bumpy, which did not
:12:02. > :12:10.help. But it happens. I cannot get too down on it. Maybe I went out to
:12:11. > :12:14.hard, but mentally I held it together and kept going. It is a big
:12:15. > :12:20.thing for something like that to happen at the Olympics. That is the
:12:21. > :12:28.basic aspect biggest positive I can take. A word on Fabian Cancellara,
:12:29. > :12:34.what a champion. Even with the non-mechanical issue, he would have
:12:35. > :12:44.beaten me. He has won a lot of races, he is a champion. He has won
:12:45. > :12:50.many races. You cannot take it away from him, he is exceptional. As you
:12:51. > :12:55.are. A silver medal on the track for you when you were in London.
:12:56. > :13:00.Apologies if anybody was offended by his expletive, but emotions are
:13:01. > :13:08.running high. What can you do when the equipment fails? We just heard
:13:09. > :13:16.from Rohan Dennis, about what happened. We saw what happened, he
:13:17. > :13:22.lost his bar. He talked about Fabian Cancellara and what a champion he
:13:23. > :13:27.is. A remarkable individual, we talked about that performance in the
:13:28. > :13:32.time trial, a masterclass. Yes, people have seen the course, the
:13:33. > :13:37.claims and other stuff. His final Tour de France was disappointing for
:13:38. > :13:41.him, we did not see much of him, but we saw glimmers when he entered the
:13:42. > :13:46.road race. He was actually up there with the best on the claims he. That
:13:47. > :13:50.was much more than I expected from him. It shows the class. You can
:13:51. > :13:57.never write somebody off with that history. Like Kristin Armstrong, a
:13:58. > :14:00.winner eight years ago, it shows what it means to these individuals
:14:01. > :14:06.to keep coming back and trying. You want more of that if you can have
:14:07. > :14:09.it. Even the weather conditions, Fabian Cancellara is such a good
:14:10. > :14:14.handler, it was like he was riding on a different road. He gained a lot
:14:15. > :14:19.of his time on the descent. He was 24 seconds back at one stage. The
:14:20. > :14:24.rest of his ride was fantastic, so maybe he had an issue of camera. Or
:14:25. > :14:29.maybe it was a pacing strategy. He knew what he was doing. A bronze
:14:30. > :14:33.medal for Chris Froome, the same position as in London, but he has
:14:34. > :14:37.come off the back of the huge effort in the Tour de France, a big day on
:14:38. > :14:42.the road race. It is difficult to hang on to that form for this amount
:14:43. > :14:51.of time. Ask how long you can keep peak form for. A couple of fixed
:14:52. > :14:57.before he gets here, you are asking somebody to hold top form for a nub
:14:58. > :15:04.of month. He is still in great shape, but he has just lost his
:15:05. > :15:08.edge. But he can be happy with a bronze medal. Top ten for Geraint
:15:09. > :15:13.Thomas. Let's hear what he had to say.
:15:14. > :15:25.It was a fight all day today. I did not feel great. But I gave it
:15:26. > :15:31.everything. Was not to be. It was a late call-up as well, not some think
:15:32. > :15:37.you had necessarily aimed at. I had a McDonald's on Sunday with the road
:15:38. > :15:48.race boys! But Usain Bolt does, so I thought, why not? I found out at
:15:49. > :15:54.10:30pm on Monday, so it was late. But there is not much I would have
:15:55. > :15:55.done differently. I got stuck in, gave it everything, but it was not
:15:56. > :16:05.my day. Mixed memories from the Olympics, so
:16:06. > :16:11.disappointed to crash in the road race but how has your Rio experience
:16:12. > :16:16.been overall? Yes, like you say, the disappointment of the crash sort of
:16:17. > :16:20.overwhelmed everything else. But I guess after a few days, you can
:16:21. > :16:24.reflect on it all. It is always great to come to the Olympics and
:16:25. > :16:29.represent Great Britain and be in the village and things and it's an
:16:30. > :16:33.amazing experience. It is my third Olympics and unfortunately, it did
:16:34. > :16:37.not go quite how I wanted. But yeah, I can still be proud we gave it
:16:38. > :16:41.everything and that is the way it goes sometimes. Thank you for
:16:42. > :16:45.joining us. That was Geraint Thomas, saying it
:16:46. > :16:50.was not his day today but we might see him in Tokyo. Absolutely. I
:16:51. > :16:54.think he was a last minute, thrown into this one, got some decent form
:16:55. > :16:56.and he got stuck in but it would be unfair to expect more than that,
:16:57. > :17:02.considering the other riders have been focusing on this event for one,
:17:03. > :17:05.two, three years. And Tom Dumoulin with the broken wrist, managing to
:17:06. > :17:09.ride into a silver medal position. We will see Fabian Cancellara, the
:17:10. > :17:12.Olympic champion for the second time, receive his gold medal and Tom
:17:13. > :17:17.Dumoulin and Chris Froome collect his bronze in a few moments.
:17:18. > :17:19.Thank you, and we will be back there shortly to see that medal ceremony.
:17:20. > :17:23.I remember Chris Boardman saying that Chris Froome's time would come
:17:24. > :17:27.after bronze four years ago at Hampton Court and it certainly has,
:17:28. > :17:31.a three-time winner of the Tour de France, great effort from him to get
:17:32. > :17:34.another bronze in that particular event but Fabian Cancellara, they
:17:35. > :17:48.call him Spartacus, he's the man and he is back for
:17:49. > :17:52.a second time as Olympic champion. We will quickly show you what is
:17:53. > :17:54.happening in judo because it is the fifth of seven British judoka in
:17:55. > :17:57.action today, Sally Conway, the 29-year-old Scot who is fighting in
:17:58. > :18:00.her second games, ninth in London and she said it took a year to get
:18:01. > :18:02.over the disappointment so she is going to try to vent it on a
:18:03. > :18:07.Tunisian opponent in the first round. The women's 70 kilos judo
:18:08. > :18:11.contest and Sally Conway making her first appearance at Rio 2016. When
:18:12. > :18:14.she left the UK at the end of July, she said she could not wait to
:18:15. > :18:19.fight, she was feeling good and she was ready.
:18:20. > :18:26.We are about to find out how ready, facing Houda MIled of Tunisia, one
:18:27. > :18:35.of Africa's best judoka, the African champion, and these two have only
:18:36. > :18:39.met once before. It was a victory for Miled. Conway has to watch out
:18:40. > :18:43.for penalties, they have been a real problem for the British judoka in
:18:44. > :18:47.Rio, several times, the Brits have gone out on penalties only. I wonder
:18:48. > :18:51.how Conway is going to approach this today is to
:18:52. > :19:00.when these two met last November, it was a really close contest but it
:19:01. > :19:04.was one that Miled had the better off throughout. Conway was not quite
:19:05. > :19:06.in it at any stage. She has started brightly this time around, in the
:19:07. > :19:22.white. And that is it! Sally Conway, not
:19:23. > :19:28.hanging around at all. Awarded the ippon with less than a minute gone.
:19:29. > :19:35.Sally Conway, proving that it can be done for British judo. She gave
:19:36. > :19:38.Miled, the 29-year-old from Tunisia, absolutely no chance in her opening
:19:39. > :19:41.fight and is through to the round of 16 with barely a minute gone and
:19:42. > :19:45.barely any sweat on her brow. Fantastic start for Sally Conway. In
:19:46. > :19:55.the women's 70 kilo at Rio 2016. She means business and has the
:19:56. > :20:03.chance to become the first Briton into the quarterfinal in her last 16
:20:04. > :20:06.bout against Emane France, a bronze medallist in London. Sally Conway is
:20:07. > :20:13.back and bidding for a quarterfinal. Let's go back to Lee Williams.
:20:14. > :20:18.COMMENTATOR: Born in Bristol, training in Scotland and devastating
:20:19. > :20:22.in Rio so far, Sally Conway has wasted hardly any time getting into
:20:23. > :20:25.this contest, despatching her first-round opponent so easily,
:20:26. > :20:31.within a minute but this is going to be a different prospect. Emane is
:20:32. > :20:35.the world and European champion. In their only to contest against each
:20:36. > :20:41.other so far, Emane has come out on top. -- two contests. This is an
:20:42. > :20:46.incredibly tough test for Sally Conway and Emane immediately on the
:20:47. > :20:55.attack. Conway lasted barely a minute, the first time these two
:20:56. > :21:02.met. She was dispatched by a quite impressive spinning form of uchimata
:21:03. > :21:06.from Emane, a veteran at the age of 34, with three world titles at
:21:07. > :21:08.different weights. But Sally Conway has had an impressive 2015 and
:21:09. > :21:36.looked in great form earlier. Head to head in the early stages of
:21:37. > :21:42.this contest. Conway, looking to do something with her feet, now
:21:43. > :21:57.turning. And off the mat, so we reset.
:21:58. > :22:06.Conway needs to be careful. Emane, looking with the shoulder throw that
:22:07. > :22:11.she loves to deploy. Conway managing to avoid going over the top and now
:22:12. > :22:19.Emane looking to find some kind of purchase. Two minutes 20 left, four
:22:20. > :22:23.minutes initially and we can go to golden score if needed but Conway
:22:24. > :22:29.has been penalised for passivity, not being aggressive. That puts her
:22:30. > :22:31.on the back foot now because that one penalty, the yellow card you can
:22:32. > :22:36.see in the top corner will be enough. Again, Emane syncing and
:22:37. > :22:55.trying to throw Conway over the top. Emane has been awarded a yuko for
:22:56. > :22:59.that. It is the smallest score you can have in judo. Conway still has
:23:00. > :23:03.time to come back, still plenty of opportunity to come back. But she
:23:04. > :23:05.will need to do some considerable damage to an opponent she has never
:23:06. > :23:16.beaten competitively. This is the last stage in this judo
:23:17. > :23:20.contest where Conway could be eliminated completely. You get
:23:21. > :23:31.through the -- to the quarterfinals, guaranteed at least one more fight.
:23:32. > :23:34.Free once again. -- the referee once again telling the two to break,
:23:35. > :23:39.which I don't think they initially had. Emane is living up to her world
:23:40. > :23:42.title so far. Sally Conway, who came out earlier and delivered a ippon
:23:43. > :23:49.within a minute, could really do with doing that again but so far
:23:50. > :23:54.Emane has been on top. A fantastic arm bar in her first round, which
:23:55. > :24:02.won Sally Conway the rights to face Emane. She has one minute and 28
:24:03. > :24:23.seconds to find a way into the quarterfinals of Rio 2016.
:24:24. > :24:27.Again, Emane syncing to her knees. She loves the shoulder throw. Conway
:24:28. > :24:48.needs to be careful. Trying to avoid the hold without
:24:49. > :24:53.giving anything away. Now the hold is on for Emane. You can see the
:24:54. > :24:59.clock rising, there. Conway flipping. And now the clock for
:25:00. > :25:08.Conway starts instead, Conway reversing on Emane. The longer you
:25:09. > :25:20.hold, the more you score, that is a Emane -- a yuko for Sally Conway, 15
:25:21. > :25:24.seconds is wazari and one more will win by a ippon. She has done it!
:25:25. > :25:27.What a reversal! The world champion is out and Sally Conway looked like
:25:28. > :25:33.she was down and out, she looked like she was almost dead and buried
:25:34. > :25:38.but she came back with a phenomenal move on Emane, who stares into the
:25:39. > :25:43.distance, scarcely able to believe what has just happened. Look at
:25:44. > :25:54.Sally Conway's face! That was phenomenal. And Sally Conway has
:25:55. > :26:00.turned the tables on the world and European champion and has booked her
:26:01. > :26:05.place in the quarterfinals of Rio 2016, the first member of Team GB to
:26:06. > :26:13.get this far at this Olympic Games. What a way to do it, Sally Conway.
:26:14. > :26:17.She surpasses her very best efforts from four years ago and we will be
:26:18. > :26:20.back to see Sally Conway in the quarterfinal very shortly.
:26:21. > :26:27.Meanwhile, the medals are about to be presented, there's Anna van der
:26:28. > :26:30.Breggen of the Netherlands, Olga Minsky of Russia about to receive
:26:31. > :26:34.her silver medal and let's get back to Simon to describe these are
:26:35. > :26:41.special moments. COMMENTATOR: Zabelinskaya takes silver this time,
:26:42. > :26:46.the bronze medallist four years ago in London, 36 years old now, it may
:26:47. > :26:50.have been her last chance in the Olympic Games, some controversy
:26:51. > :26:57.about her present in the games, given the recent nature of her
:26:58. > :27:03.doping ban. She thought she had won until someone told that she was
:27:04. > :27:06.going to win. -- and can someone told she was going to win but
:27:07. > :27:14.Kristin Armstrong from the US had other ideas. This was a special race
:27:15. > :27:15.and this is a special winner. Gold medallist and Olympic champion,
:27:16. > :27:22.representing the united states of America... For the third time in a
:27:23. > :27:37.row. Kristin Armstrong! It was a
:27:38. > :27:40.fantastic ride by Kristin Armstrong, an unprecedented three-time winner
:27:41. > :27:48.of this event, Beijing, London and now Rio. What a week for her. It is
:27:49. > :27:58.her birthday tomorrow as well. And Kristin Armstrong has done it again.
:27:59. > :28:03.At the age of 42. And it was a superb ride, really strong finish
:28:04. > :28:12.from her. Ladies and gentlemen, the anthem of
:28:13. > :29:35.the united states of America. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:29:36. > :29:42.No female rider has ever won more Olympic gold medals on the road than
:29:43. > :29:47.that lady there. Kristin Armstrong, equalling the record of three
:29:48. > :29:52.Olympic golds. What a ride. Kristin Armstrong finishes with the gold
:29:53. > :29:55.medal. Silva, Zabelinskaya of Russia and Anna van der Breggen from the
:29:56. > :29:59.Netherlands with the bronze. Let's go back down to the roadside and
:30:00. > :30:02.Jill Douglas. Emotional scenes and just wonderful
:30:03. > :30:06.to see the smile on Kristin Armstrong's face. She was with her
:30:07. > :30:11.little boy, Lucas, a bit earlier, beaming and smiling and he said to
:30:12. > :30:15.her at the end of the race when she dissolved into tears, "Why are you
:30:16. > :30:19.crying?" Tears of happiness, you can see what it means to her, the effort
:30:20. > :30:23.that has gone into delivering this prize. It can be quite distressing
:30:24. > :30:27.for your kids to see it when they don't know what's going on! My first
:30:28. > :30:29.world title win, I had the kids there and it is quite nice to bring
:30:30. > :30:32.the family, though because they are the ones that have to make the
:30:33. > :30:36.sacrifices for you to be yeah. I think it is nice she has retired
:30:37. > :30:40.twice, done the family thing and then come back and been able to come
:30:41. > :30:45.back to this level. It is quite remarkable, really. And a word on
:30:46. > :30:49.the Dutch team so far on the road, they have really delivered. Yes,
:30:50. > :30:53.they have, Anna van der Breggen, to get a medal in the time trial, of
:30:54. > :30:57.course, and I think van Dijk was the big loser, riding off the road and
:30:58. > :31:00.probably off the podium at some point but Tom Dumoulin, everyone was
:31:01. > :31:03.expecting something of him and it was a lot to ask after again, like
:31:04. > :31:08.Chris Froome, a long season and breaking your wrist but still got
:31:09. > :31:12.back and got on the podium. Great to see Anna van der Breggen on the
:31:13. > :31:20.podium and of course, they lost and Aniek Van Koot and in the road race.
:31:21. > :31:24.It has been an emotional week. -- van Vleuten in the road race. It is
:31:25. > :31:27.part and parcel of racing, people fall off but no one likes to see in
:31:28. > :31:32.get injured but that is part and parcel of the Libby games. I have to
:31:33. > :31:35.say I'm glad we time trial calls are not the descent that we saw in the
:31:36. > :31:38.road race because it would have been absolutely treacherous on a day like
:31:39. > :31:41.today, the heavens have really opened which is why we have the
:31:42. > :31:47.umbrella. It has got a lot worse in the last few minutes but we're
:31:48. > :31:49.waiting for the men's medal ceremony and we will see the great Fabian
:31:50. > :31:52.Cancellara receive his gold medal but of course, Chris Froome with a
:31:53. > :31:56.bronze medal for his efforts here and possibly now a bit of a well
:31:57. > :31:59.earned holiday? He certainly deserves it. We just think of the
:32:00. > :32:02.Tour de France but that is the three-week effort and all the
:32:03. > :32:05.build-up for that as well and then just a few days where he's also got
:32:06. > :32:09.lots of things to do, being pulled right, left and centre by the
:32:10. > :32:13.sponsors and other commitments after that and then coming to the Olympic
:32:14. > :32:19.Games. It is amazing he manages to get onto the podium.
:32:20. > :32:28.Bradley Wiggins won the gold medal in 2012, he came across from Paris,
:32:29. > :32:34.it was an added ask for somebody to come here after that effort. It
:32:35. > :32:40.shows what a special thing Bradley achieved, because of those things
:32:41. > :32:42.coming together. But here, just getting onto the podium after having
:32:43. > :32:48.had a summer like that is really special. We have seen some fantastic
:32:49. > :32:56.racing and spectacular crashes and finals. But it has been exciting. An
:32:57. > :33:00.emotional moment for Fabian Cancellara as he takes the step up
:33:01. > :33:05.onto the podium. He says it is his last year. He will not ride at the
:33:06. > :33:10.World Championships in Doha. This could be the last time we see him.
:33:11. > :33:15.You wonder if it will change his mind. It is a lovely idea to go out
:33:16. > :33:20.on top, but it is hard to let go when you are on the top step. Maybe
:33:21. > :33:26.he will change his mind, but I think it will be a great way to bow out.
:33:27. > :33:32.Sadly, the heavens have opened at the most inopportune moment of the
:33:33. > :33:38.whole day, the crowning moment for Fabian Cancellara. The ceremony for
:33:39. > :33:45.the men's individual time trial. Brian Cookson, the president of the
:33:46. > :33:53.UCI, will hand out the medals. What a podium we have got.
:33:54. > :34:04.Inclement weather held off just long enough to get the race finished.
:34:05. > :34:10.Before anybody was potentially disadvantage. Here we go, the Chris
:34:11. > :34:29.Froome. The bronze medallist, representing
:34:30. > :34:32.Great Britain... Chris Froome! What a year he has had. A third
:34:33. > :34:40.overall victory in the Tour de France. And now another Olympic
:34:41. > :34:48.Games medal. The same colour as four years ago. Third at Hampton Court,
:34:49. > :34:51.though today. And Chris Froome in the end of finding enough in the
:34:52. > :35:01.final stretch to overhaul the Spanish rider. He put himself on the
:35:02. > :35:03.podium. Silver medallist, representing the
:35:04. > :35:17.Netherlands... Tom Dumoulin.
:35:18. > :35:23.Tom Dumoulin, his expression tells you all you need to know, he came
:35:24. > :35:27.here for the gold. He was beaten by the better man on the day, but what
:35:28. > :35:33.a shame he had to cope with a fractured wrist in recent weeks.
:35:34. > :35:35.Winner of two stages of the Tour de France, and of the silver medal
:35:36. > :35:47.here. And now for the gold medal. Gold medallist and Olympic champion,
:35:48. > :36:10.representing Switzerland... Fabian Cancellara.
:36:11. > :36:19.A popular winner and an Olympic champion for the second time. In the
:36:20. > :36:28.late autumn of his career. A golden finish to a glittering career.
:36:29. > :36:42.It was a superb ride. He did not make the victory, he won it by a
:36:43. > :36:43.mile. Ladies and gentlemen, the anthem of
:36:44. > :37:59.Switzerland. The winning smile, Britain's first
:38:00. > :38:02.cycling medal won by Chris Froome, but this was Fabian Cancellara's
:38:03. > :38:07.day, just when everybody thought those days had gone. Not so.
:38:08. > :38:14.Emotional scenes. The Swiss celebrating the gold medal, and
:38:15. > :38:21.Britain should celebrate the first cycling medal. How do -- who knows
:38:22. > :38:26.how many more will follow. We go to the velodrome tomorrow. We were
:38:27. > :38:31.thinking, Fabian Cancellara, the greatest time trialist of all? Among
:38:32. > :38:39.them is as far as I would go. It depends what you include. He is on
:38:40. > :38:42.the podium. A complete time trialist, it is not often you see
:38:43. > :38:46.somebody who enjoys riding against a watch being that good at the
:38:47. > :38:52.descent. Such a good technical rider, and classics rider. He has a
:38:53. > :38:56.lot of strings to his bow. He paced his effort well. There was the
:38:57. > :39:01.one-time check that we were not clear of, that he went off hard and
:39:02. > :39:06.rode to his own agenda. A lot of experience. There was one check
:39:07. > :39:12.where he was 24 seconds down, I don't know if it was correct, or a
:39:13. > :39:18.problem with the timing, or if he had a small incident. It was
:39:19. > :39:23.unusual. He rode a fantastic race. To be able to use the descent as a
:39:24. > :39:28.real advantage is unusual, but a mark of him, he has always been one
:39:29. > :39:33.of the best handlers in the world, it looked like he was on a different
:39:34. > :39:37.course. I know when the British cycling team looked at the course,
:39:38. > :39:42.they thought it would be suitable for Emma Pooley and Chris Froome,
:39:43. > :39:47.Healy, but in the end it was the hard men that did well.
:39:48. > :39:52.I am surprised myself that we thought that, because when I look at
:39:53. > :39:58.because, I try not to have great hindsight, yes there were sharp
:39:59. > :40:01.climbs, but it was a small proportion of the race, and I was
:40:02. > :40:09.surprised at how nontechnical because was. Hopefully Chris Froome
:40:10. > :40:16.will come here shortly, just making his way of the podium. The Swiss and
:40:17. > :40:19.others are keen to talk to the Olympic champion. People want a word
:40:20. > :40:25.with Chris Froome and ask him how he found it today. It is difficult to
:40:26. > :40:36.hold your form, but he has done us proud. He is waiting to the banner
:40:37. > :40:42.over the. Here he comes. Bronze medallist, congratulations. It has
:40:43. > :40:47.been a momentous few weeks for you. You fought every inch of the way to
:40:48. > :40:53.get onto the podium. I did, I cannot be disappointed. I would have loved
:40:54. > :40:56.to have been in with a chance of the gold medal, but I gave it
:40:57. > :41:03.everything. I have got to be happy with that. You gave it everything,
:41:04. > :41:06.but the course suited some of the strong man, the likes of Fabian
:41:07. > :41:15.Cancellara, so strong on the descent particularly. He was the clear
:41:16. > :41:25.winner today, more than a minute ahead of me. If I had lost by five
:41:26. > :41:32.or six seconds I would have been disappointed, but he was the
:41:33. > :41:35.strongest guy today. I don't know what else to say, I gave it
:41:36. > :41:40.everything I had, and I tried to hold back a bit for the last lap,
:41:41. > :41:46.knowing how hard the course was. I did not have any more. You paste it
:41:47. > :41:50.well to get onto the podium, and if you look back at the year, your
:41:51. > :41:55.third Tour de France, a medal here, you would have settled for that! It
:41:56. > :42:02.is an amazing feeling, the year I have had. The third Tour de France
:42:03. > :42:09.victory, and to get a medal here for the second time at the Olympics is
:42:10. > :42:15.incredible. I just want to thank everybody who has been part of this.
:42:16. > :42:26.Most notably David, who has been looking after me. And Team GB. Enjoy
:42:27. > :42:31.the bronze medal. Chris Froome with his bronze medal around his neck, to
:42:32. > :42:42.add to the yellow jersey he secured in Paris just three weeks ago, if
:42:43. > :42:47.that. Let's sum up today and how we have enjoyed the time trials. The
:42:48. > :42:51.sport has been spectacular. The weather can add a lock to it, as
:42:52. > :42:56.long as nobody comes to grief, it makes it exciting. It brings out
:42:57. > :42:59.more than who has the biggest engine, it is who is the best
:43:00. > :43:05.technical rider, who can paced themselves. It was a good cause. It
:43:06. > :43:10.had a bit of everything, and we saw a worthy champion. We need to get a
:43:11. > :43:15.cup of tea, but it has been a great event. We won't, because I am
:43:16. > :43:18.delighted to say we have the Olympic champion, Fabian Cancellara.
:43:19. > :43:24.Wonderful to see you finish your career where you belong, on the top
:43:25. > :43:30.step, your second Olympic title, has special was this? Pretty special, I
:43:31. > :43:39.still don't have the words. After 2012, disappointment, and many
:43:40. > :43:43.others, ups and downs, this is my last season, my last Olympic Games,
:43:44. > :43:48.and my last chance to reach something. I knew it would be a
:43:49. > :43:54.challenging day, with Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin and all the others.
:43:55. > :44:06.It was an open course for all different characteristics. No words.
:44:07. > :44:12.Finishing after 16 years, double gold and silver, it is not bad! It
:44:13. > :44:16.is very good! You set off like a man on a mission, and you timed it
:44:17. > :44:24.beautifully, there was just one-time check where you were down. Did
:44:25. > :44:32.anything happen? Not specific. The trainer and team manager and the
:44:33. > :44:38.coach, all the people around me, we worked hard, and yesterday I had my
:44:39. > :44:43.doubts, but they were good doubts, because I saw myself, but around me
:44:44. > :44:51.they were all questions about this and that. On the end, I found a way
:44:52. > :44:57.to focus on what I had to do today, not to go too fast at the beginning,
:44:58. > :45:01.because if you do, over an hour you have to balance everything right,
:45:02. > :45:09.and I did in the first lap, and then you have to be not... You have to
:45:10. > :45:20.balance, and I did it right. I found a good key to go over this day. I am
:45:21. > :45:24.just happy. Well done. Fabian Cancellara, the Olympic champion,
:45:25. > :45:27.they gold medal around his neck, a beautifully timed performance, and
:45:28. > :45:37.what a way to end a glittering career.
:45:38. > :45:43.His timing and yours absolutely immaculate. You all deserve a cup of
:45:44. > :45:48.tea. It's raining but they don't mind the wet at the Radical park
:45:49. > :45:51.because they don't mind it in the whitewater canoeing. David Florence,
:45:52. > :45:56.the canoe single did not turn out the way he wanted it, this time it
:45:57. > :46:00.is the kayaks, slightly different wherein you are not kneeling, you
:46:01. > :46:05.are sitting on your backside with a double bladed paddle, that is the
:46:06. > :46:08.difference and it is Joe Clarke in his third Olympics who will be
:46:09. > :46:11.flying the flag for Great Britain. Sir Matthew Pinsent is there. It is
:46:12. > :46:17.a big day for this gentleman, trying to get through to his first final.
:46:18. > :46:21.What chance do we give him? I think a good chance but we have to stay
:46:22. > :46:26.realistic. He is ranked in the top ten in the world but he's not in the
:46:27. > :46:29.top three in the world. This semifinal, 15 paddlers that we are
:46:30. > :46:34.about to see down the cause, and the top ten get to the final and then
:46:35. > :46:38.they go again later this afternoon, later this evening back in the UK. I
:46:39. > :46:42.think we should certainly expect him to get through to the final and as
:46:43. > :46:47.we saw yesterday, once you are in the final in canoe slalom, pretty
:46:48. > :46:50.much anything can happen. Absolutely and David Florence, a quick word
:46:51. > :46:53.about what happened yesterday, I know he was disappointed but he has
:46:54. > :46:59.another chance in the double, the event when he won the silver last
:47:00. > :47:02.time around. Yes, I think he will be very disappointed and I have been
:47:03. > :47:07.trying to talk to the team today and what everyone always says from Team
:47:08. > :47:11.GB canoeing, they shrug their shoulders, philosophically, and say,
:47:12. > :47:14."That is canoe slalom, you have to take the hit and those moments
:47:15. > :47:18.because it can turn in an instant and if you make a mistake, it is
:47:19. > :47:22.very unforgiving and your medal chances, your chances of finishing
:47:23. > :47:27.in the top three, five, he finished tenth in the end yesterday, it will
:47:28. > :47:30.go in a fraction of a second." In technical terms, the difference
:47:31. > :47:40.between the canoe and the kayak, which is considered the more tricky
:47:41. > :47:44.event to master? Now you are asking! Definitely the K1 kayak is a deeper
:47:45. > :47:49.field so I will jump back across and then say that I think to master the
:47:50. > :47:52.event, the canoe is harder, you only have a single bladed paddle, you are
:47:53. > :47:57.kneeling and you have to swap backwards and forwards. The really
:47:58. > :48:01.technical skill is in the canoe, but we are seeing the kayaks today.
:48:02. > :48:05.Thank you for joining us. The competition is just about to get
:48:06. > :48:09.underway. In fact, I believe the first paddlers are out on the water,
:48:10. > :48:13.only the top ten will make the final and they only get one run, like they
:48:14. > :48:17.did yesterday, to make their mark to get into the final which will be
:48:18. > :48:21.contested later in the evening. Patrick Winterton and Helen Reeve
:48:22. > :48:25.once again on stand-by as the raging waters tumbledown discourse. --
:48:26. > :48:34.tumble down this course. 15 left in the competition after the
:48:35. > :48:38.heat and we are looking to break it down to the best ten, Mario Leitner
:48:39. > :48:43.already down the cause, posting a time of exactly 100.2 five. That is
:48:44. > :48:48.surely going to be bettered as we go through the list. Britain's Joe
:48:49. > :48:52.Clarke is 1415, having put in a fantastic second run in the heats.
:48:53. > :48:59.We are looking for more of the same from him. -- 14 out of 15. He has
:49:00. > :49:03.medal potential, no doubt. This is an interesting competitor, Kazuki
:49:04. > :49:07.Yazawa from Japan, and excellent paddler and also a monk and he
:49:08. > :49:11.combines the two. If he wins, that will surely be a first, he is from
:49:12. > :49:16.nagging, where the 1998 Winter Olympics were held -- Nagamoto. He
:49:17. > :49:22.was inspired by the Japanese ski jumpers there and wanted some of the
:49:23. > :49:27.success, the gold-medal winner for Japan taking it in front of his home
:49:28. > :49:33.crowd and this man wants to win gold in 2020. A bit shaky coming out of
:49:34. > :49:36.gate three, finding his rhythm now, certainly quite inconsistent way.
:49:37. > :49:39.You want to see the athletes keeping the nose of the boat directly
:49:40. > :49:45.downstream through this section, up on the split, it is looking good.
:49:46. > :49:53.This section is not particularly difficult but as we saw yesterday in
:49:54. > :49:58.the C1, there's a lot of time to win and lose and it is about looking for
:49:59. > :50:02.the fastest flowing water. Through gate 16. In that section, uses the
:50:03. > :50:07.water to his advantage and this is where he needs to come out and start
:50:08. > :50:11.lining himself up the at 19. Looking good so far, wanting a tight spin,
:50:12. > :50:15.staying on the inside gate and now power, drive across, use the water,
:50:16. > :50:20.getting a little bit, two, three strokes below the gate, not ideal.
:50:21. > :50:24.The boat was a bit to broadside coming across the river. Look at the
:50:25. > :50:30.split, now getting caught in the hydraulic blow, the bottom full as
:50:31. > :50:35.it is known, where the water is most powerful. Through 22 in 83.5
:50:36. > :50:42.seconds. We will get a split off that as the race goes on. Kazuki
:50:43. > :50:44.Yazawa, looking for a place in the semifinals, 125, the fastest time
:50:45. > :50:51.and he will be inside that, going top for now, and the margin, 3.06,
:50:52. > :50:55.it may be good enough but he's got a long wait. Only five men being taken
:50:56. > :51:00.out of the competition in the semifinals. He has beaten one and he
:51:01. > :51:04.has got to beat four more. Took a few big hits down the bottom of the
:51:05. > :51:08.course, did not quite have the same with that I have seen from him, gate
:51:09. > :51:12.seven, very quick turn, want to see the athletes in and out of the
:51:13. > :51:17.upstream gate as quickly as possible, little time in the slack
:51:18. > :51:20.water of the Eddie is ideal. We mention the Olympics in Nagamoto
:51:21. > :51:25.expiring him but not as much of yesterday's performance by his
:51:26. > :51:29.fellow Japanese who was the first Asian to win a bronze medal in canoe
:51:30. > :51:33.slalom, fabulous effort from him and he has been in three Olympics and
:51:34. > :51:38.each time, he has got a bit better. If he comes in 2020, he may well be
:51:39. > :51:43.looking for gold and silver. The ideal stepping stones for that. The
:51:44. > :51:48.third competitor, Isak Ohrstrom, making a bit of history as well, no
:51:49. > :51:51.Swede has ever represented in the canoe slalom disciplines. This man
:51:52. > :51:57.has and he has made it through to the semifinals. We were chatting
:51:58. > :52:03.yesterday about paddling in the winter. And the lack of the joy of
:52:04. > :52:08.it! This man has made a beautiful video that he calls Cold, paddling
:52:09. > :52:12.at -15 and the first thing he has to do is go down the course and knock
:52:13. > :52:20.the ice of the polls so they can swing freely. -- of the poles. That
:52:21. > :52:23.is hard enough but when he has had three weeks training in Italy and
:52:24. > :52:29.then goes home, you have to admire his dedication. We wish him well.
:52:30. > :52:34.Looking for a time of around 21 at gate seven, there or thereabouts.
:52:35. > :52:38.He's upside down, very quick roll between seven and eight and he
:52:39. > :52:42.missed eight, going round the back of it, taking a two second penalty
:52:43. > :52:46.so he needs to negotiate it and get back on track. Not only is that
:52:47. > :52:52.disorientating, it is also very slowly so he needs to... Look, down,
:52:53. > :52:57.9.53, what a disappointment, and extremely quick roll, got his edging
:52:58. > :53:00.wrong, perhaps, lent upstream and maybe he learned that quick roll
:53:01. > :53:04.because in the winter in Sweden, you don't want to go underwater for very
:53:05. > :53:09.long. That is certainly the case, that little stop after seven, in
:53:10. > :53:12.fact, there are two successive stoppers and they look innocuous
:53:13. > :53:16.enough but they do surge, and now going down through 18, how does he
:53:17. > :53:19.cope with the spin at 19. He knows his chances of getting through to
:53:20. > :53:27.the final now are slimmer than slim as he looks for the right place on
:53:28. > :53:30.the wave to get across to 20. Very high on the stopper but it puts him
:53:31. > :53:35.in a decent position for number 20. Nine seconds plus, too much to make
:53:36. > :53:39.up at this stage. Ducking inside the pole at gate 21 and a 22, he wants
:53:40. > :53:44.to spin around the inside pole like that, quick, in and out, one turning
:53:45. > :53:48.stroke and power away, the last bit with a couple of waves, to knock the
:53:49. > :53:53.paddlers off-line when their arms burning and he has been given a 15
:53:54. > :53:58.second penalty on gate 24, cannot have got his whole thread through.
:53:59. > :54:01.We said two days ago that getting through to the semifinal was an
:54:02. > :54:06.achievement. He wanted more, of course he did but it went wrong so
:54:07. > :54:09.early on. That is the role, getting the wrong angle on the boat. It did
:54:10. > :54:12.not look as though he had too much water on the top deck, normally you
:54:13. > :54:17.present the bottom of the boat to the wave. Unusual. I think he had
:54:18. > :54:22.too much weight on the upstream blade as he came out of it, a quick
:54:23. > :54:26.flip. You could see by the momentum, how quickly he went under and came
:54:27. > :54:34.back up, before he even hit the wave at gate eight. Sweden with no chance
:54:35. > :54:37.of a medal. They have a gold medal from the pool, Sarah Sjostrom taking
:54:38. > :54:43.the gold in the 100 metres butterfly. Isak Ohrstrom will not be
:54:44. > :54:50.joining the tally. That is very disappointing for him but I'm sure
:54:51. > :54:54.his fans will be disappointed but glad he made it through to the
:54:55. > :54:57.semifinals. Now, Peter Kauzer, perhaps the first man who has a real
:54:58. > :55:03.chance of taking the title. The best in the World Cup series in 2015, 32,
:55:04. > :55:08.from Slovenia, a country that take this sport very seriously. Started
:55:09. > :55:12.his canoeing career at the age of six and if you work that out, he
:55:13. > :55:19.only needs to have done one hour a day to have got up to the magic
:55:20. > :55:23.figure of 10,000 hours. Very smooth paddler, long strokes, always trying
:55:24. > :55:26.to spot the line, renowned for looking like he's not going that
:55:27. > :55:30.fast but really using the speed, tight come in and out of gate seven,
:55:31. > :55:34.across the wave, not getting any water on his deck, but holding
:55:35. > :55:40.between eight and nine, not ideal but a direct line through to ten.
:55:41. > :55:45.The time is good, inside for the Bullet, as he's known. He won the
:55:46. > :55:50.semifinals in London 2012 but finished sixth in the end, some 7.5
:55:51. > :55:54.seconds of the best time from the winner, who is not here to defend
:55:55. > :56:00.his title, having been pushed out of the Italian selection. Lovely run
:56:01. > :56:06.through 15 and 16, nice drive into 17 but slow on the exit, he needs to
:56:07. > :56:10.keep driving, he has lost his advantage, .73 down, expecting to
:56:11. > :56:14.see him drive across the wave, using the back of it to push up, nice and
:56:15. > :56:18.tight around the inside pole and then he needs to kick out over the
:56:19. > :56:24.wave and turn the bow downstream to start driving into the last upstream
:56:25. > :56:29.gate. Look at his time through 22, 80 3.5, the best so far, well inside
:56:30. > :56:38.that, good-looking one from Peter Kauzer, who won the world title in
:56:39. > :56:43.2011, exactly the same winner is the see one gold winner. That is a big
:56:44. > :56:49.margin, safe qualifying run from Peter Kauzer of Slovenia. Relief. He
:56:50. > :56:52.looked happy enough with that, you could see his reaction when he
:56:53. > :56:57.crossed the line, not delighted but a good job, was a bit sticky around
:56:58. > :57:01.the top, a bit off with some of the upstream is. Goes for the pump and
:57:02. > :57:05.does not quite get the projection that you would expect from that
:57:06. > :57:10.loading paddle. You can see how close these paddlers have to get to
:57:11. > :57:14.the gate in this K1 men's semifinal and final, they will really cut the
:57:15. > :57:20.line is they have to drive directly from one gate to another. -- as they
:57:21. > :57:24.have. Well executed spin, really looking for the gate line and then a
:57:25. > :57:28.very direct cross, straight across, what we want to see as they use one
:57:29. > :57:34.stroke to pull from the spin straight onto the wave and drive
:57:35. > :57:37.across. The job is half done. It does not really matter where you
:57:38. > :57:41.finish in the semifinals, you just have to make sure you are in the
:57:42. > :57:45.final ten. Peter Kauzer, without a doubt, will be there after that
:57:46. > :57:51.performance as we watch Jure Meglic, who is racing for Azerbaijan. Went
:57:52. > :57:56.from Slovenia in terms of nationality in 2014, but still lives
:57:57. > :58:00.in narrow bore. That is where he does is training. 31 now. Made the
:58:01. > :58:04.semifinals of the European Championships. Perhaps we would have
:58:05. > :58:08.expected more. He was knocked out in the semifinals of the World
:58:09. > :58:20.Championships last year at leave Ali. Let's see how he gets on. --
:58:21. > :58:24.leave -- Lea Valley. Quite a contrast to Peter Kauzer, really
:58:25. > :58:28.tacking away. Quite close together, looking over here at the moment.
:58:29. > :58:34.Wanting to see a tight line into seven. This is the section that
:58:35. > :58:37.caught out Isak Ohrstrom. No problem with the stopper this time, getting
:58:38. > :58:42.his line, right through eight but then struggles with nine and has
:58:43. > :58:46.been given a penalty. He finds himself half a second down on the
:58:47. > :58:51.pace of Peter Kauzer but because of that penalty, in fact it has turned
:58:52. > :58:56.into a 50, and that could be Jure Meglic out of the competition. How
:58:57. > :58:59.disappointing for him. Got given a 50 at gate ten when he dipped his
:59:00. > :59:03.head inside the gate and I thought it was risky. They have to be sure
:59:04. > :59:07.of their lines because the judges are very hot on it, have to get the
:59:08. > :59:11.whole head and part of the body and part of the boat inside the lines of
:59:12. > :59:15.the gate. We will wait to see his reaction when he sees the 50 on the
:59:16. > :59:20.board. It might suggest that he thinks it is unfair. If that is the
:59:21. > :59:25.case, there may well be a protest but it does not look good for him at
:59:26. > :59:32.the moment. Slovenia's former paddler, now racing for Azerbaijan.
:59:33. > :59:36.Through 22. Because of that, 52 seconds added, he's a long way off
:59:37. > :59:41.the pace and Peter Kauzer will remain number one with a time of
:59:42. > :59:51.91.01, that is the time Joe Clarke will be after, 53.99. A shake of the
:59:52. > :59:54.head. Do you think he knew? It was certainly a risk. You can see him
:59:55. > :00:00.ducking under it but this is what happens in finals, semifinals and
:00:01. > :00:05.finals, there you go, literally having to duck his head right under
:00:06. > :00:10.the pole. It reminds me of Joe Clarke at league Valley last year
:00:11. > :00:13.where he picked up of 50, got his head safely inside the gate but no
:00:14. > :00:25.part of the boat which is something they need to watch out for. America
:00:26. > :00:30.next and Michal Smolen from the USA. Went from crag of to the USA at the
:00:31. > :00:33.age of nine. There's been a few transfers in this game! And of
:00:34. > :00:38.course, Olympic selection plays a part in that. Absolutely, they all
:00:39. > :00:42.want to take a run at the Olympic Games because it is the peak of any
:00:43. > :00:45.sportsperson's career, certainly in canoe slalom. On this lad's head is
:00:46. > :00:48.a lot of pressure from the Americans. They are expecting big
:00:49. > :00:52.things. They were disappointed with the result yesterday and they don't
:00:53. > :00:56.get funding like a lot of European countries. I was talking to one of
:00:57. > :00:59.the supporters earlier and they said they really need some good results
:01:00. > :01:04.and then they hope their sport will be better funded in the USA. Smoking
:01:05. > :01:09.Michal Smolen, as they call him, might be the man to do that, has
:01:10. > :01:13.been a US citizen since 2013, very good performances in the under 23
:01:14. > :01:17.World Championships in Penrith a couple of years ago. We are waiting
:01:18. > :01:21.to see how he performs under the greatest of pressure. This, without
:01:22. > :01:28.a doubt, the biggest competition of his life.
:01:29. > :01:39.He sits back a bit. He already has a penalty. A bit sticky on the stopper
:01:40. > :01:45.after seven. The line forces him into the wrong angle on the next
:01:46. > :01:50.one. Valuable seconds going missing. It is still good enough for second
:01:51. > :01:56.place, so if he can tidy it up from here, just get into the flow, find
:01:57. > :02:04.the right line, he may well still go through to the finals. Looking good
:02:05. > :02:12.through 15 and 16, a bit slow at 17, two extra strokes. They want to see
:02:13. > :02:21.him do a nice spin. One spin and drive up onto the wave. Not quite as
:02:22. > :02:25.quick as Peter Kauzer. They were hoping there would be an option for
:02:26. > :02:31.saving time and taking the line straight. Even with the spin, some
:02:32. > :02:40.of them are struggling. It is too much of an ask. Is it quicker? To go
:02:41. > :02:50.all the way across and turn back will be quite slow. Michal Smolen
:02:51. > :02:57.into second... No, just outside, he is in third, a fraction behind
:02:58. > :03:03.Kazuki Yazawa. Great news for the Japanese. We cannot be certain yet,
:03:04. > :03:10.but it looks as though Kazuki Yazawa may be going through to the finals.
:03:11. > :03:17.We still have a lot of talent still to come. Nine athletes remaining at
:03:18. > :03:27.the top of the course. The next will be from France. Sebastien Combot,
:03:28. > :03:33.who will have had a chat to the person who took the gold medal
:03:34. > :03:37.yesterday. France is always a team that are well supported, as they
:03:38. > :03:41.feel, but they seem to raise their game once they have had the first
:03:42. > :03:49.bit of success. I have seen it in so many sports. They had disappointment
:03:50. > :03:57.with the K-1 lady, but then yesterday, amazing performance, and
:03:58. > :04:02.today, that see what can happen, but they have so much strength in depth
:04:03. > :04:11.amongst all of their teams, they challenge so hard. I way he goes.
:04:12. > :04:16.The world champion from 2007. That event taking place in Brazil, so
:04:17. > :04:20.maybe it is Brazil but does it for this man. His wife is an
:04:21. > :04:32.international paddler, it is in the family. Smooth at the moment, not an
:04:33. > :04:39.awful lot to give away. The inconsistent wave, the direct line.
:04:40. > :04:43.Not giving away anything. This is a very dynamic run so far. He is a
:04:44. > :04:50.light built, fabulous power to weight ratio. He pumps off the wall.
:04:51. > :04:56.He needs to get back in the flow. He looks a little slow, but he gets the
:04:57. > :05:04.boat moving again. Patiently waited, then he drove with the blade. Nice
:05:05. > :05:08.and tight at 17. You say tight, 17 is tight, little room between the
:05:09. > :05:14.gates and the wall. It is confusing them on the angle to approach. They
:05:15. > :05:22.are not massive mistakes, but they have cost him time, having been up
:05:23. > :05:27.on the first split. Looking for a time as 78 at gate 22. If he is
:05:28. > :05:37.inside that, he will challenge Peter Kauzer. He is down, but he needs to
:05:38. > :05:47.stay with it. Within six seconds of Peter Kauzer, he will go ahead of
:05:48. > :05:54.Kazuki Yazawa in second. Into second place, Kazuki Yazawa pushed down to
:05:55. > :06:00.three. With only five men going out, Kazuki Yazawa still is not safe in
:06:01. > :06:09.third place. Did not quite get some of the lines you might expect.
:06:10. > :06:18.Not quite finding the rhythm and lines as fast as Peter Kauzer did.
:06:19. > :06:23.Yesterday was a cause for those who could catch the water, use it, too
:06:24. > :06:26.little strokes and keep the nose facing downstream. He played safe in
:06:27. > :06:34.the semifinals in Lea Valley last year. Did you get the impression he
:06:35. > :06:42.was a bit Conservative? The opening section was fantastic. Maybe he
:06:43. > :06:47.eased off towards the bottom. Around the 19, 20 section did not seem to
:06:48. > :06:48.explode as you might expect. Really accelerate off the wave. It will be
:06:49. > :07:01.interesting to see. Now, can Michael Dawson prove it is
:07:02. > :07:09.not unlikely, number 13, from New Zealand? He lives in a tourist spot.
:07:10. > :07:17.It smells a bit! 15th in London last year. He was brilliant in the heat.
:07:18. > :07:22.He produced the fastest time, but had a dreadful semifinal, he did not
:07:23. > :07:29.make it through to the last ten. He has not been in a final since June
:07:30. > :07:37.20 15. He is looking good so far. He has picked it up. Good power of the
:07:38. > :07:47.upstream blade between eight, nine and ten. The split is really good.
:07:48. > :07:51.Peter Kauzer still be race leader. Sebastien Combot was also inside
:07:52. > :07:56.that time, but Peter Kauzer is the split we have got, as he is the
:07:57. > :08:02.fastest on at the moment. In London 2012, we saw Dawson... His mother
:08:03. > :08:08.gave him a penalty, his father protested against it, his mother is
:08:09. > :08:12.still an official, but not working here, so they won't have a repeat of
:08:13. > :08:16.that situation. It caused a few giggles around the dinner table for
:08:17. > :08:25.many months after that. Going for a top ten position. A heavy hit their
:08:26. > :08:31.on 21. Want to see a nice quick spin on the spot. Campbell Walsh working
:08:32. > :08:43.with him to get tied to the gate. He is right up there. He might survive,
:08:44. > :08:49.Peter Kauzer, in the lead. He is safely through to the Olympic final.
:08:50. > :08:54.Something that he has not achieved since June 2015 in any competition,
:08:55. > :08:59.so well done to him, that is a massive boost for him. And the
:09:00. > :09:03.British connection, Campbell Walsh, who took a silver medal in Athens.
:09:04. > :09:08.Campbell has worked really hard with him around being sharp and tight on
:09:09. > :09:14.the gate, not something Mike was comfortable with before, but we saw
:09:15. > :09:17.how the work has paid off, very tight, sharp, snappy, some of the
:09:18. > :09:26.upstream gates early on, he dug deep. It was an excellent display of
:09:27. > :09:31.technical paddling. I enjoyed you talking to Campbell, he said, he is
:09:32. > :09:38.paddling like you, and he said, that is what I've been working on! Time
:09:39. > :09:46.to refocus. 3:15pm local time the start of the final. He knows he is
:09:47. > :09:52.in the final. Kazuki Yazawa is still on the bubble, hoping that his time
:09:53. > :09:56.of 97.19 will beat one of the remaining paddlers. If not, he is
:09:57. > :10:03.going home at the semifinal stage. Surely this man will get inside the
:10:04. > :10:11.qualifying time, 94.50 nine. In fact, 97.19. He would rather beat
:10:12. > :10:18.94.59, which would give him a bit of breathing space. Jiri Prskavec, from
:10:19. > :10:25.Prague 23, the world champion. He took the silver at the World
:10:26. > :10:31.Championships in 2013. Not the most powerful padlock on the circuit, but
:10:32. > :10:39.he is a real technician. Using the water, keeping the nose, it was
:10:40. > :10:44.good, sharp off the polls. Almost eliminating the stagger as he comes
:10:45. > :10:54.in, very tight around 13. "To Re-examine rate. Looking dynamic, as
:10:55. > :10:57.always. It looks as though he is working hard. Yesterday it was those
:10:58. > :11:02.who looks as though they were flowing who produced the quickest
:11:03. > :11:11.times. Very good on 17, a nice move. He has lots of time to play with. A
:11:12. > :11:13.well-placed spin. Not the quickest, that he will still have the green
:11:14. > :11:26.light. Comfortably inside. He still has a
:11:27. > :11:32.one second advantage over Peter Kauzer. His time will surely be
:11:33. > :11:38.beaten now. You think you have done the job, but the route for the last
:11:39. > :11:46.three gates is quite tricky. He has just got the green. He is through to
:11:47. > :11:51.the final. He started life as an Alpine skier. In his own words, he
:11:52. > :11:57.said he was rubbish, so he switched to the water, stuck with the slalom.
:11:58. > :12:02.He is world class. That was a really good display. He ironed out the
:12:03. > :12:08.stackers, made them look straight. One of the best upstream is. A
:12:09. > :12:10.tricky gate, boiling water underneath the polls, it is
:12:11. > :12:17.difficult to get the grip. He took the lines on, quite aggressive in
:12:18. > :12:21.his attack on the gate. He is a delicate paddler, a technician, not
:12:22. > :12:28.the biggest amount of power. Not as quick on the exit. But then he rode
:12:29. > :12:38.the wave superbly. Just nailed upstream gate 20. The Czech Republic
:12:39. > :12:55.safely through. Let's update you on who has made it through.
:12:56. > :13:02.We must leave it there, because we have to come off here on BBC One to
:13:03. > :13:08.make way for the six PMQs, but we were all -- we will return shortly
:13:09. > :13:12.on BBC Two for the conclusion of that semifinal. Joe Clarke will go
:13:13. > :13:14.in the penultimate run on a hoping to get into the top ten. Before we
:13:15. > :13:28.go, headlines, from a busy day. Veteran American Kristin Armstrong
:13:29. > :13:31.rolling back the years to win her third successive Olympic time trial,
:13:32. > :13:39.as Emma Pooley fails to trouble the podium today. But Chris Froome took
:13:40. > :13:44.bronze again, just as he did in London, in the main's, won by the
:13:45. > :13:55.incredible Swiss, the Beijing winner. Great Britain's men held on
:13:56. > :13:58.by the skin of their teeth to be New Zealand, 21-19, to reach the
:13:59. > :14:02.quarterfinals of the rugby sevens. The all Blacks have scraped through.
:14:03. > :14:06.Britain will face Argentina in the quarterfinal. Tim Kneale and Stephen
:14:07. > :14:13.Scott have made it through to the final after night's, sorry,
:14:14. > :14:18.semifinal of the double trap, you can see that at 7pm your time. A wet
:14:19. > :14:24.and windy day by the beach, but it does not matter in Canoe slalom,
:14:25. > :14:28.where it is always wet and wild. You can be join us for much more on BBC
:14:29. > :14:34.Two in a couple of seconds. In the meantime, goodbye.
